Recently, Angelina Jolie took a moment out of her busy 2025 movie schedule to share a profoundly emotional moment while discussing her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand. In a video posted to X by critic Brandon Lewis, Angelina Jolie, along with her fellow castmates, can be seen participating in a Q&A following the premiere of her latest project, Couture. During the Q&A, an audience member, who had recently lost a friend to cancer, asked the actor & director what message of "hope" she would offer to those still struggling.

After sharing her condolences with the audience member for their loss, with tears in her eyes, the Maleficent lead shared her heartfelt response, which you can watch for yourself below.

Jolie’s co-star Anyier Anei and the film’s writer-director Alice Winocour can be seen in the video providing support by placing their hands on the upset star’s back. After composing herself, the A-lister shared:

This response, which you can see for yourself in the video above, resonated with me deeply. I lost my father to esophageal cancer in 2016, and one thing I remember vividly is how all-consuming the experience can feel. The person with cancer can often be reduced to just that diagnosis in the eyes of those around them, usually out of well-meaning intentions. Jolie continued:

If I could go back and change one thing about the time I had with my father, it would be to treat each day as a bit more normal and not make his diagnosis the center of every conversation. I wish I had had the Girl, Interrupted alum’s advice while I was losing my father to cancer.

Marcheline Bertrand learned she had ovarian cancer in 1999. A breast cancer diagnosis followed, and she passed away in January 2007, which prompted Angelina Jolie to get a "W" tattoo in honor of her mother.

That family history shaped the performer-turned-producer’s own choices regarding her health. In 2013, genetic screening showed a BRCA1 mutation—a “faulty gene”—that put her breast cancer risk around 87% and ovarian cancer risk near 50%. The By the Sea filmmaker opted for a preventive double mastectomy.

In her New York Times op-ed, “My Medical Choice,” she explained that the surgery dropped her breast cancer risk to under 5%.

Angelina Jolie delivered the emotional message while discussing her latest film, Couture, during its premiere. In the flick—her first since portraying opera diva Maria Callas in last year’s Maria, which is available for streaming with a Netflix subscription—the Changeling actress, 50, stars as Maxine, an American film director hired to create a video for a Paris fashion event while dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis and navigating a divorce.

This theme resonates with the ’90s icon, who has experienced a lengthy divorce from her ex-husband, Brad Pitt. While Pitt has been open about their split, Jolie has remained more private regarding her feelings in recent years.

Reeves isn't just an action star, but with the lead in two now-iconic franchises, The Matrix and John Wick, he definitely belongs near the top of any list like this.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie's career started early. She was just 6 years old when she appeared in her first movie in 1982 alongside her dad, Jon Voight. By the late '90s, she was on her way to becoming one of the biggest stars in the world. She got into action movies with films like Gone In 60 Seconds and her biggest franchise, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and while she has always kept one foot in more indie-type movies (including as a director), she's been a steady action star for decades.

Nicolas Cage

It's hard to come up with a Hollywood star with a more diverse acting career than Nicolas Cage. His rage is actually pretty amazing, and that certainly includes starring in some great action movies, like the iconic Con Air and the National Treasure movies.

Scarlett Johansson

Like a lot of actors on this list, Scarlett Johansson can't be pigeon-holed as simply an action star. She is, however, one of the major players in the MCU as Black Widow, and has starred in other action flicks like Jurassic World Rebirth and Lucy.

Wesley Snipes

Most of the biggest box office successes of Wesley Snipes' early career were comedies like Major League, Wildcats, and White Men Can't Jump. In the early '90s he transistioned into action movies with leading roles in the likes of New Jack City, Passenger 57, and Rising Son. He also starred in Demolition Man with Sylvester Stallone, and, of course, as Blade in three movies.

Halle Berry

You might not think of Halle Berry as an action star... until you remember how many superhero movies she's starred in. Not only was she an important part of the X-Men franchise, but she was also Batwoman in 2004 and has also starred in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and others.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

This one is a little tricky. Technically, action movie legend Arnold Schwarzenegger had his first role way back in 1970 with Hercules in New York, but that was really a one-off B-movie that was soon forgotten. After he spent the 1970s winning every bodybuilding trophy on Earth, he entered Hollywood properly in 1982 when he starred in Conan the Barbarian. Everything since is action history.

Robert Downey, Jr.

Robert Downey, Jr. doesn't jump off the page as an action star. The Oscar winner has proven he can star in any genre, but as the anchor of the MCU movies for more than a decade, he definitely belongs on this list.

Tom Cruise

There's nothing to be said about Tom Cruise that hasn't already been written, right? One of the biggest stars in Hollywood history, Cruise has starred in action movies like Top Gun and its sequel, a couple of Jack Reacher movies, the Mission: Impossible franchise, and great one-offs like Edge of Tomorrow, War of the Worlds, and Minority Report, to name just a few. Plus, he famously does a ton of his own stunts, which shows just how much he belongs on any list of big action stars.

Milla Jovovich

Milla Jovovich started as a model, but transitioned to movies with films like Return to the Blue Lagoon and Dazed and Confused. Soo,n though, she started popping up in legendary action movies like The Fifth Element and, most notably, as Alice in six Resident Evil movies.

Jean-Claude Van Damme

In the '80s, a whole slew of action-first stars emerged, and one of the most popular was Jean-Claude Van Damme. Van Damme first gained fame in No Retreat, No Surrender, and followed that with hits like Bloodsport and Cyborg.

Linda Hamilton

Director James Cameron can be divisive, but you can't argue that he knows how to create female action star leads with great parts and great casting. Linda Hamilton is a legend from her appearances in the Terminator movies over the years.

Kurt Russell

Okay, we have to acknowledge that Kurt Russell's career started when he was a child star with Disney way back in the 1960s. In the '80s, he fully dove into action flicks in a big way with movies like Escape from New York, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China, all directed by one of the decade's best directors, John Carpenter. He's since been in a slew of action movies.

Mel Gibson

With the Mad Max franchise and the Lethal Weapon movies, Mel Gibson would be on this list even if those were his only movies. Of course, he has so much more, like Braveheart, Ransom, and many of the other best action movies of the '90s.

Thandiwe Newton

Thandiwe Newton debuted in 1991's comedy Flirting, and in the '90s and beyond, she's starred in action movies like Mission: Impossible 2, The Chronicles of Riddick, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and 2012. She's also starred in TV shows like Westworld that fit in this genre, too.

Dolph Lundgren

One of the pillars of cheesy (and awesome) '80s action is the great Dolph Lundgren. From fantasy heroes like He-Man in 1987's Masters of the Universe to communist boxers like Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, he's been a staple for decades in lots of action movies, including part of the O.G. cast in The Expendables franchise.

Lucy Liu

Lucy Liu kicked off her career in the early '90s, and before too long, she started doing some awesome action movies. Probably the most notable are the Charlie's Angels movies and the Kill Bill movies, but she's also got some less-well-known ones like The Man with the Iron Fists, directed by RZA, and even superhero movies, like Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Jason Statham

Like other actors on this list, Jason Statham didn't start in true action flicks. His first roles were in the Guy Ritchie films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, but within a couple of years, he became a full-blown action hero in The Transporter and The Italian Job. Now it seems like he's in all the biggest action franchises, like The Expendables and the Fast & Furious movies.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron is one of the most versatile actresses in Hollywood. She won an Oscar for her portrayal of serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the terrifying true story Monster. She's also been in acclaimed dramas like The Road, Cider House Rules, and Bombshell. Of course, she's starred in a whole slew of great action movies like Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, Æon Flux, and a few of the Fast & Furious movies.

Jet Li

Jet Li started out in movies in Hong Kong in the early 1980s, where he quickly established himself as one of the great martial arts stars in Chinese-language films. After a decade and a half in Hong Kong, he moved to Hollywood in the late '90s, starring first as the villain in Lethal Weapon 4 in 1998. He became such a big action star that he was included in the first three Expendables movies.

Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner might not seem like the typical action star, but he definitely is. Movies like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Postman, and the incredibly underrated Waterworld prove that when he wants to be, he can be a great action hero.

Michelle Yeoh

Like some other actors on this list, Michelle Yeoh starred in martial arts movies in Hong Kong in the '90s. Her breakout film in the West was as Wai Lin in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies, where she showed the whole world her stage fighting and stunt skills. Since then, she's been in hits like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and, of course, Everything Everywhere All at Once, for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress.

Bruce Willis

There's no way this list would be complete without the great Bruce Willis! Die Hard will always be one of the best action movies of all time and in many ways helps define what a action movie in the 1980s looked and felt like. Only Willis could have pulled off the the wit and charm of John McClane. He's been in a ton of action movies since, of course. He is now retired, due to his health, but he worked right up until he no longer could.

Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz took a long hiatus from acting, finally returning in the 2025 Netflix release, appropriately called Back in Action. While she may be best known for her roles in romcoms like There's Something About Mary and The Mask and dramas like Gangs of New York and Vanilla Sky, she's had her fair share of action hits too, like Charlie's Angels and Knight and Day.

Steven Seagal

It's easy to forget just how huge an action star Steven Seagal was in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He actually sort of dominated the box office with movies like Hard To Kill, Above The Law, Mark For Death, and Out For Justice. He reached the artistic pinnacle of his career with 1992's Under Siege. It's not just a great movie for teenage boys like his first four movies; it's legitimately a great movie, with great performances from Seagal, Tommy Lee Jones, and Gary Busey. Sure, he's not making movies on that level anymore, but he's still been churning out straight-to-video-type releases for decades.

Peter Weller

Peter Weller's breakout came in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension in 1984, but he really hit the big time with 1987's classic RoboCop. Sure, it was insanely violent, but RoboCop had a unique political message, too. Weller's been going strong ever since.

Robert Patrick

The iconic T-1000 in Terminator 2 became one of the great action villains of the 1990s. Robert Patrick played the role of the callous, cold robot killer perfectly. It established him as a legit action star, and he's been busy ever since.

Mickey Rourke

Mickey Rourke isn't only an action star. In fact, most of his roles have been in serious dramas, starting with movies like The Pope of Greenwich Village and 9½ Weeks in the 1980s, but he's definitely proven his action bona fides with roles in Iron Man 2, Sin City, and The Expendables.

Matt Damon

Anyone who has starred as Jason Bourne in four films deserves to be on this list. Sure, Matt Damon might not be the first actor you think of as an action hero, but come on! You can't deny that he belongs on this list for those films alone. Throw in movies like The Martian and Elysium, and he definitely should be here.

Dwayne Johnson

We're making a slight exception here. Technically, Dwayne Johnson's first movie credit came in 2001 in The Mummy Returns, but he had been quite famous for years for his work in the WWE throughout the 1990s. So while he didn't get his start in movies until later, he was a well-established star years before that. Of course, in the two and a half decades since his first movie role, he's become one of the biggest action heroes of all time.

Zoe Bell

This is another interesting case. Zoe Bell's first acting role in a movie was in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof in 2007. However, she had already built a legendary career as a stunt woman going back to the 1990s. With the Academy Awards (finally) adding a trophy for best stunts, we're going to include Bell here, because she's been performing in movies for decades.

Will Smith

He started as a rapper, then got into acting with comedy, and in the '90s, Will Smith became a big action star with movies like Independence Day, Bad Boys, and Men in Black. He's proven to be a very versatile actor over the years, starring in every genre of film you can think of.

It never ceases to amaze me when an actor is the spitting image of the real person they are selected to play. I do not think a historical portrayal necessarily lives or dies by the performer’s resemblance to the subject, but I think it is something to appreciate, especially when you consider the amount of biopics starring actors who bear absolutely no resemblance to their role. Here are a few notable examples of actors who were clearly hired for their talents above anything else.

Michael Shannon As Elvis Presley (Elvis & Nixon)

The most requested photo in the National Archives depicts Elvis Presley shaking hands with Richard Nixon in the Oval Office, and the events surrounding this historic meeting at the White House are dramatized in 2016's Elvis & Nixon. Kevin Spacey makes for a visually believable depiction of the 37th United States President, but the otherwise wonderfully talented Michael Shannon simply does not cut it as the one many call the King of Rock 'n Roll, even with a decent jumpsuit and wig.

John Wayne As Genghis Khan (The Conqueror)

Oh, boy, where do we begin with this one? The only visual evidence we have of what Genghis Khan looked like is artist renderings, but it does not take an expert to notice that John Wayne was not Asian. Still, the legendary Western movie star was cast as the Mongol chief in 1956's The Conqueror, which has since been regarded as one of the worst films ever made.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson As John Lennon (Nowhere Boy)

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson's 2009 music biopic Nowhere Boy focuses on the pre-Beatles life of John Lennon, as portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. If you ask me, the Golden Globe-winning actor might have been a better fit to play, perhaps, Paul McCartney or, better yet, George Harrison.

Tom Cruise As Barry Seal (American Made)

If more people knew about Barry Seal and what he looked like, I believe Tom Cruise's portrayal in 2017's American Made would have been criticized as one of the most egregious miscastings in Hollywood history. The otherwise talented movie star did absolutely nothing to alter his appearance and pass for the ill-fated, heavy-set CIA smuggler, save what I regard as an embarrassing Southern accent.

Julia Roberts As Erin Brockovich (Erin Brockovich)

Julia Roberts gives, arguably, the finest performance of her career as a single mother and paralegal who uncovers a small town pollution scandal in Steven Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich from 2000. However, if a resemblance to the person an actor is portraying were part of the Academy's voting criteria, she might not have won the Oscar.

Denzel Washington As Frank Lucas (American Gangster)

Ridley Scott's 2007 biopic American Gangster dramatizes the career of mobster Frank Lucas, played by Denzel Washington, and also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Lucas' brother, Huey. Curiously, Ejiofor actually looks a whole lot more like the real Frank than the two-time Oscar winner. However, Washington was a good friend and frequent collaborator of the director's brother, Tony Scott, so he probably had the role in the bag for that, among other reasons.

Johnny Depp As J.M. Barrie (Finding Neverland)

Oddly enough, J.M. Barrie boasted a striking resemblance to another influential author, Edgar Allan Poe, with his tall forehead and small moustache. However, Johnny Depp, who played the Peter Pan author in 2004's Finding Neverland, does not boast a resemblance to either of them, if you ask me.

Hugh Jackman As P.T. Barnum (The Greatest Showman)

Let's not even bother talking about the many historical inaccuracies from The Greatest Showman, 2017's musical retelling of the origins of the circus, and even ignore the fact that P.T. Barnum was not the kindhearted man Hugh Jackman portrayed him as. All that matters to this list is whether or not the Wolverine star looked the part, and the famously attractive Australian actor most definitely was not a match for Barnum in that regard.

Michael Fassbender As Steve Jobs (Steve Jobs)

Michael Fassbender's Oscar-nominated performance in director Danny Boyle and writer Aaron Sorkin's Steve Jobs from 2015 is widely regarded as superior to Ashton Kutcher's portrayal in Jobs from two years earlier. However, at least the former That '70s Show cast member can say he resembled the tech pioneer more closely.

Jesse Eisenberg As Mark Zuckerberg (The Social Network)

Mark Zuckerberg once made a surprise SNL cameo, during which he stood right next to host Jesse Eisenberg on the Studio 8H stage, proving that they are certainly not a visual match. The actor does not even bother to imitate the Facebook founder's distinctly low voice when portraying him in 2010's The Social Network, but his Oscar nomination proves that that is not what really matters in the end.

Tom Hanks As Fred Rogers (A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood)

Casting a universally beloved actor such as Tom Hanks to play a universally beloved children's television personality like Fred Rogers, of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood fame, is brilliant in theory. However, even giving the Oscar winner the icon's signature haircut and sweaters is not quite enough to distract from the fact that you are still unmistakably watching Hanks on screen.

Leonardo DiCaprio As Howard Hughes (The Aviator)

A major inspiration for Marvel's Tony "Iron Man" Stark was Howard Hughes, whose resemblance is actually a striking match for both Robert Downey Jr. and Dominic Cooper, who plays Howard Stark in his early years in the MCU. In fact, I think either one of them would have been a better visual fit for the eccentric millionaire in The Aviator than Leonardo DiCaprio, even if his performance in the 2005 biopic makes it one of his best collaborations with the director, Martin Scorsese.

Warren Beatty And Faye Dunaway As Clyde Barrow And Bonnie Parker (Bonnie And Clyde)

From a performance standpoint, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway make a great onscreen duo portraying the titular notorious bank robbers in 1967's Bonnie and Clyde. However, the screen legends' casting does not earn the film any points for historical accuracy, considering Beatty does not have Clyde Barrow's jug ears, nor does Dunaway boast Bonnie Parker's sharp, thin face.

Taraji P. Henson As Katherine G. Johnson (Hidden Figures)

Taraji P. Henson gives an undeniably commanding performance in 2016's Hidden Figures as Katherine G. Johnson, a mathematician who was pivotal in helping NASA figure out space travel. Yet, when comparing the Empire star to photos of the real Johnson, it is clear the actor does not resemble her much at all.

Anthony Hopkins As Richard Nixon (Nixon)

Reportedly, Anthony Hopkins had some hesitation about taking on the lead role of Oliver Stone's 1995 biopic about Richard M. Nixon. Ultimately, I would say the Academy Award winner went on to give a great performance in Nixon, but I find myself distracted by his struggle to hide his accent and his obvious fake teeth and hairpiece that really do not help make him look any closer in resemblance to the disgraced U.S. president.

Margot Robbie As Queen Elizabeth I (Mary Queen Of Scots)

Cate Blanchett previously gave an Academy Award-nominated performance as the lead of 1998's Elizabeth, and even bore a strong resemblance to the royal based on artist renderings. I cannot say the same about Margot Robbie, even if the Australian actor's portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots was still worthy of praise.

Benedict Cumberbatch As Alan Turing (The Imitation Game)

Benedict Cumberbatch has such a distinct appearance, making it difficult for him to resemble anyone else without heavy alterations. However, nothing was done to make him look any closer to World War II-era computer scientist Alan Turing in The Imitation Game.

Javier Bardem As Desi Arnaz (Being The Ricardos)

Oscar winner Nicole Kidman went above and beyond to physically become Lucille Ball for writer and director Aaron Sorkin's dramatization of what went on behind the scenes of the beloved TV sitcom, I Love Lucy. However, playing her onscreen husband is Oscar winner Javier Bardem, who does not pass for Desi Arnaz in the slightest.

Ray Liotta As Shoeless Joe Jackson (Field Of Dreams)

Technically, Ray Liotta plays the ghost of Shoeless Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams, but even a person's spectral remnant should look something like them. The infamous MLB player had a much narrower face and wider ears, not to mention that he pitched left-handed, while the actor did the opposite in the beloved sports movie.

Beyoncé As Etta James (Cadillac Records)

No one could possibly deny that Beyoncé has the pipes to match Etta James, which had to have been the reason why she was cast in 2008's Cadillac Records. However, the "At Last" singer was short and round-faced, and the former Destiny's Child member is neither.

Dominic West As Prince Charles III (The Crown)

I mean no disrespect to Prince Charles III, but is it just me, or was The Wire star Dominic West just a little too handsome to play the Royal Family member on The Crown? Then again, any one cast member's portrayal on the historical Netflix series might pale in comparison to Elizabeth Debicki's striking resemblance to Princess Diana.

Kane Hodder As Ed Gein (Ed Gein: The Butcher Of Plainfield)

The most famous actor to wear Jason Voorhees' hockey mask in the Friday the 13th films must have seemed like an inspired choice to play one of the most notorious serial killers in history in 2007's Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield. However, the 6'2", broadly built Kane Hodder does not boast Gein's narrower face and small stature.

Clive Owen As Bill Clinton (Impeachment: American Crime Story)

In most cases, prosthetics can be very helpful in making an actor look more similar to the person they are portraying, such as when Charlize Theron became Megyn Kelly for Bombshell. Clive Owen adopted this method to play Bill Clinton on Impeachment: American Crime Story, but the makeup only caused the English actor to resemble the 1990s-era President even less.

Angelina Jolie As Christine Collins (Changeling)

Christine Collins is the subject of Clint Eastwood's 2008 period film, Changeling, which is based on the true story of when her missing son was replaced by an impostor. Had she been an even better-known historical figure, there might have been more criticism over casting Angelina Jolie, an actor known for her voluptuous lips, as the thin-lipped 1920s woman.

Fred Armisen As Barack Obama (Saturday Night Live)

Considering the fact that the otherwise extremely talented SNL star Fred Armisen is a white man with a subpar impersonation of the 44th. U.S. President, I'll just say that I am glad Jay Pharoah eventually took over as Barack Obama.

Tom Hulce As Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Amadeus)

Just based on artist renderings of the seminal composer, Tom Hulce was nowhere near a match to play the title role of director Milos Forman's Best Picture Oscar winner, Amadeus, from 1984. However, the actor is widely admired for his performance as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which earned him a well-deserved Academy Award nomination.

Robert Redford As Harry Longabaugh (Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid)

I wonder how many others like me had no idea that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was based on a true story, which might be how the film was able to get away with casting actors who look nothing like the Western outlaws they play. For instance, Robert Redford's mustache works just fine for the role, but Harry Longabaugh, a.k.a. "The Sundance Kid," did not have long blonde locks.

Diana Ross As Billie Holiday (Lady Sings The Blues)

Most would agree that 1972's Lady Sings the Blues is the superior biopic about the trailblazing "Strange Fruit" singer over The United States vs. Billie Holiday from 2021. However, those same people might also agree that Andra Day was a better fit to play Holiday, physically speaking, than the otherwise wonderfully talented Diana Ross in the earlier film.

Robin Williams As Patch Adams (Patch Adams)

The real Patch Adams hates Tom Shadyac's biopic based on his life, which has nothing to do with the fact that Robin Williams looks nothing like the influential doctor. However, it's still impossible to ignore, especially with how they do not even bother to give the Oscar winner Adams' signature mustache.

Mel Gibson As William Wallace (Braveheart)

In the most well-known illustrations of William Wallace, the Scottish warrior is depicted as having short hair and a beard. Why director Mel Gibson opted against this look when he portrayed Wallace in Braveheart is beyond me.

Serena Scott Thomas As Princess Diana (Diana: Her True Story)

Many actors have portrayed Princess Diana to varying degrees of success, but most consider Serena Scott Thomas from the 1993 two-part miniseries, Diana: Her True Story, to be one of the weakest matches, purely in terms of her physical resemblance.

Zoe Saldaña As Nina Simone (Nina)

The 2016 biopic, Nina, sparked controversy when Zoe Saldaña donned skin-darkening makeup and a prosthetic nose to better resemble singer Nina Simone, which the actor would later admit she regretted.

While a great deal of the focus of Netflix and all the other streaming services is on producing new original content, my favorite thing about them has always been that they act as libraries for older movies, allowing me to watch my favorite movies for the 100th time, or allowing me to easily catch movies i missed for the first time.

This week, I noticed that Wanted, a 2008 action movie starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie, was now available with my Netflix subscription. I remember wanting to see the movie when it originally came out, but for whatever reason, that never happened. I never got around to actually watching, hell, I only watched Jaws for the first time recently, so I took the opportunity to do so, and discovered that it’s a pretty fun action flick, with a remarkably stacked cast. Although part of the reason I loved it may have been all the ways it reminded me of my favorite modern action franchise.

Wanted Gave Me Serious John Wick Vibes

One of my concerns sitting down to watch Wanted was that, in the more than a decade since it was released, the action, as cutting edge as it may have been at the time, may have become dated. These days, I compare basically any movie action sequence to the best of the John Wick franchise, and even today, most movies come up short by that metric.

Wanted’s action isn’t as good as the best of John Wick. It’s not even on par with middle-of-the-road John Wick. However, what surprised me was how much Wanted felt like almost a prototype John Wick, as many of the details of the older film would find their way into my favorite franchise. These connections are almost certainly unintentional. Neither Chad Stahelski nor David Leitch worked on Wanted as stunt performers, but that makes the connections all the more intriguing.

It Has A Secret Society Of Assassins

The most obvious connection between the two is that both Wanted and John Wick have stories built around secret societies of professional assassins. Wanted has The Fraternity, while John Wick’s organization is called the High Table. The Fraternity is specifically referenced as being 1,000 years old. The exact age of the High Table is unclear, but it’s been indicated to be even older.

The High Table is actually one of my favorite parts of the entire John Wick franchise. I love the way the movies have built it up over time, the way it has its own currency and even its own hotels. The world-building of Wanted isn’t nearly on that level. This is likely due to the fact that the original comic book source material sees the group as actual supervillains, so the assassin element is grafted on. Perhaps if Wanted had ever received the attempted sequels, things could have been expanded upon in a way to make The Fraternity as intriguing as the High Table.

Wanted Has Its Version Of The Bowery King

John Wick has some pretty eccentric characters throughout the franchise, but none are quite as much fun as The Bowery King. Lawrence Fishburne’s character is the leader of a group under the High Table who often play the parts of the area’s homeless population, leading to them looking less clean-cut than John Wick and others. The Bowery King uses pigeons as a way to gather and send information to his people.

If the Bowery King’s pigeons are “rats with wings," then he’s not that different from The Exterminator, a member of the Fraternity who has an affinity for actual rats. It’s not hard to imagine that in the John Wick universe, The Exterminator would be one of the Bowery King’s soldiers. Although I’m not sure the Bowery King would have sacrificed his pigeons in the way that Wanted kills a lot of rats.

It’s Even Got Common

One of the best things Wanted has going for it is its incredible cast. It’s got James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie, and Morgan Freeman in major roles. Terrance Stamp is there in a solid supporting role, and a very young Chris Pratt is there in a pre-Parks & Recreation appearance. There’s even an actor who would go on to be a big part of John Wick: Chapter 2.

Years before Common would appear in the first John Wick sequel as Cassian, he appeared in Wanted as a member of The Fraternity, simply called The Gunsmith. His role in Wanted is much smaller, but it’s not exactly hard to see that Cassian and The Gunsmith have a lot in… well, common.

The Final Action Sequence Is Very John Wick

At the end of the day, both John Wick and Wanted are movies focused on building great action sequences. That said, they come at them very differently. John Wick is all about practical stunt choreography, and while Wanted certainly has plenty of that, it’s equally concerned with its cool CGI bullet firing sequences, which are, without question, still pretty cool.

There isn’t necessarily an action sequence in Wanted I would compare favorably to anything in John Wick, although the big finale sequence, which sees James McAvoy’s character jump through a window and start mowing down everybody he sees, comes close. The sequence isn’t filmed in the same way a John Wick fight scene would be, but the concept, seeing the hero mowing down countless bad guys, picking up fresh guns along the way, and firing through the dead skull of a previous victim, is absolutely something we could see in the next John Wick movie, whenever it happens.

In all honesty, I wish I had seen Wanted back in 2008, as I probably would have enjoyed it more. In the years since, action cinema has been raised to a level that makes the movie feel like a product of its time. Still, Wanted was a step on the path that brought us to a world where the John Wick franchise exists, and did its part to inspire, however unintentionally, the best action movie franchise ever.

As recently as 2020, Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov expressed interest in still making the sequel. Perhaps if it ever happens, it can take some inspiration from John Wick.

Throughout this divorce, it’s been claimed that their kids are much closer to Jolie, and at the start of 2025, one insider told People that they allegedly wanted their mom to “speak up for herself” and “defend herself.” Along with that, a few of their kids have dropped Pitt as their last name, including Shiloh and Vivienne.

According to this latest report, the former couple's kids are “very important to his life,” and even though he’s at odds with his ex-wife in court, he apparently “will always want to be an anchor in” their lives.

Throughout the years of this legal battle, two of the biggest topics of conversation have been in regards to their kids and the winery Château Miraval. So, within the same week of these reports about his relationship with his kids, it was reported that Pitt made a big move in regard to the winery.

According to People, Pitt has asked for Jolie’s private communications, as he filed a court document that showed that he was trying to depose Stoli Group’s Alexey Oliynik. The actor is claiming that this person is in the know about Jolie’s 2021 sale of the winery to the wine division of the Stoli Group called Tenute del Mondo. Oliynik will not turn over the documents or appear for a deposition. He claims he doesn’t have to because he’s a resident of Switzerland.

This is relevant because Pitt’s 2022 lawsuit alleges that his ex-wife made this sale without his approval. Meanwhile, Jolie is countersuing him.

Like millions of people around the world, I spent five hours watching Marvel slowly roll out all those Avengers: Doomsday names in March 2025, and like a lot of people, I was bummed a few of the biggest MCU stars, including Ryan Reynolds, didn’t have a chair. While it may be true that we will see more additions as we work toward the release of the upcoming Marvel movie, I was shocked by some of the names left out of the excruciatingly long cast announcement.

That said, here’s a list of some of those beloved MCU actors I really hope we see when the Russo Brothers’ Avengers: Doomsday opens on the big screen in May 2026. It’s a long list (no, not as long as that video), so let’s get started…

Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds, who has played Deadpool since the Fox days, has made a habit of teasing his return to the MCU ever since the release of Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024. I totally thought we’d see his name on one of those chairs in that seemingly endless lineup, which is why I’m so bummed the wise-cracking, R-rated, and lethal hero wasn’t included.

In an ideal world, Reynolds’ return would also include the likes of Dafne Keen, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Garner, and Leslie Uggams (you can’t have Deadpool without Blind Al).

Tom Holland

With the Spider-Man 4 release date so close to the Avengers: Doomsday rollout, it would be shocking if Tom Holland doesn’t show up in the massive crossover film a few months before his new Web-Slinger adventure. The highly in-demand actor seemed like a shoo-in to be included in the gargantuan list filled with all his MCU buddies. There are rumors that Holland won’t be in the next Avengers film, but I’m not totally convinced at this point.

Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson has been a part of the MCU since he showed up in Tony Stark’s house and revealed himself as Nick Fury way back in Iron Man. Since then, he’s popped up in all of the Avengers movies, so I was a little saddened and surprised by his omission from the absurdly long cast list for Doomsday. I mean, Fury is still alive on the Marvel Cinematic timeline after the events of The Marvels.

Chris Evans

Even though his version of Captain America retired during the Avengers: Endgame ending, Chris Evans has reappeared in the MCU (Johnny Flame in Deadpool & Wolverine), so I wouldn’t be shocked if some character played by the franchise mainstay shows up by the time it’s all said and done. Evans has been cagey about a possible return in the past, but not seeing his name on the back of a chair is a little disheartening, if I’m being honest.

Mark Ruffalo

Mark Ruffalo has been one of my favorite MCU actors ever since he took on the role of Bruce Banner/The Hulk in 2012’s The Avengers. He’s been there for all the major moments in the franchise since then, but now I’m starting to think his iconic character won’t be saving the planet, galaxy, universe, or multiverse with his old buddies next summer. This can’t happen. I mean, who’s going to give Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man an extra taco?

Benedict Cumberbatch

Is Benedict Cumberbatch bringing back Doctor Strange (third eye and all) for Avengers: Doomsday? I don’t know because the longtime Marvel staple wasn’t included in the longest line of chairs I’ve ever seen. The actor’s comments about his return to the MCU have been all over the place, with his most recent comments to Business Insider in January 2025 making it sound like he could possibly return.

Don Cheadle

Though the Armor Wars project seems to be up in the air, I thought Don Cheadle would for sure be a part of the upcoming Avengers movie. James Rhodes has been a part of the franchise since the very beginning, and Cheadle’s version of the character has had a part in three of the four crossover films to date.

Brie Larson

Another big name missing from the “Infinity Scroll of Chairs” was Brie Larson, whose Captain Marvel has long been one of the strongest heroes in the entire MCU. We last saw her in The Marvels back in 2023, so she’s due for a return at this point. The same can be said about co-stars Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, who play Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, respectively. I’d be shocked if they didn’t appear.

Jeremy Renner

Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye has had one of the craziest journeys in the MCU over the years. The underrated Avenger has been through it all, and I’ll be bummed if he’s not part of Doomsday next year. He famously wasn’t part of the Avengers: Infinity War cast, so maybe, just maybe, we’ll see him in Avengers: Secret Wars in a few years.

Charlie Cox

With Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdoch very much a part of the MCU again with the recent arrival of Daredevil: Born Again, I will be shocked if the actor doesn’t appear in Avengers: Doomsday. His name is on the rise (both the actor and character), so his absence could be felt a great deal.

Also, I would love to see Cox’s Defenders co-stars like Mike Colter, Finn Jones, and Krysten Ritter have some kind of role in what appears to be the biggest Marvel movie in years.

Halle Berry

Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and several other major players from the original X-Men movies were all announced for Avengers: Doomsday, but there was one actress whose absence really bummed me out: Halle Berry. Whenever the music would change and the camera would pan to the right, I kept hoping to see the Storm actress listed on a chair, but it never came.

The same can be said about Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin, and Hugh Jackman, three other major names from the franchise who are oddly missing from the cast list.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy

Though Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff seem to be finished with the MCU after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the rest of the actors should still be in play moving forward. With Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Vin Diesel being major parts of the last two Avengers movies, it will be odd not to see them in the upcoming Doomsday. I really hope that changes, as I’d love to see that ragtag group of space scoundrels save the day again.

The Eternals

After Captain America: Brave New World referenced Eternals earlier in the year, it felt like maybe this oft-forgotten MCU movie would be getting some attention again. However, none of the actors from the 2021 epic were included in the Avengers: Doomsday rollout. I guess we’ll have to wait longer to figure out what’s going on with the group played by Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, and Barry Keoghan.

Other Marvel Stars I Want To See In Avengers: Doomsday

On top of all these names and various groups, I would love to see even more actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe show up in Avengers: Doomsday. From longtime staples like Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Hayley Atwell, and Scarlett Johansson (nobody stays dead forever, right?) to other fan favorites played by the likes of Benedict Wong, Dafne Keen, Lupita Nyong’o, Awkwafina, and Danai Guirara to actors introduced in post-credit scenes like Brett Goldstein and Charlize Theron, there are just so many familiar faces that could show up.

Will any or all of these actors show up in Avengers: Doomsday or its sequel? I really hope so.

While the bifurcated divorce went through a while ago, Pitt and Jolie are now officially divorced, and that means both of them can move on with their personal lives, officially, too. While Pitt and Jolie’s divorce was only finalized recently, they had been legally separated for years. Pitt was spotted dating over the years, but back in 2022, he started dating Ines de Ramon. Now, a source has spoken to People, claiming both are very happy, but that things are very relaxed right now.

By all accounts, the relationship between de Ramon and Pitt has been quite serious for some time. It’s even been suggested that it was at de Ramon’s urging that Pitt’s divorce finally settled. Some sources have indicated that a marriage between the two might not be too far off, but if this source is to be believed, it seems that neither party is necessarily in a hurry and things are remaining calm for now.

Even if another marriage for Brad Pitt is in the cards eventually, it’s certainly understandable why he may not be looking to rush into it. Technically, while his divorce from Angelina Jolie may finally be done, the legal battle between the two is not over yet. Brad Pitt certainly has other things to focus on in the short term. His new film F1, helmed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, is set to open in theaters in June. To that pint, F1 is the actor's biggest theatrical role since 2022’s Babylon. It's also a big visual spectacle film with a lot of money behind it, focusing on the Formula 1 racing world. It's from the director of the Top Gun sequel, and it has the potential to be a monster hit, so I would expect the press run for this movie to be substantial, as well.

Whatever the next step in the relationship between Brad Pitt and Ines de Ramon happens to be, it certainly appears that the couple is happy with things as they are, at least for the moment. That's never a bad place to be.

Pitt and de Ramon, who have reportedly been together since 2022, started living together almost a year ago now in Pitt’s home in Carmel, California. As an insider told Radar Online this week, Brad Pitt’s partner has helped influence a new lifestyle. In their words:

In a famed incident that allegedly occurred on a plane in 2016, Jolie has suggested that Pitt had an altercation with his wife and children while he was drinking. The couple are apparently planning a future life together, which might even involve kids, and she made it known that life “would be much more enjoyable” if his divorce settlement was over.

He’s asked back to mentor a rookie that places him back into the world of F1. The movie hits theaters on June 27.

2025 is a new year in so many ways, but it is the first year since 2016 that the divorce of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt is not an ongoing concern, and that should count for something. After eight years Jolie and Pitt finally signed their divorce papers just before New Year’s and it’s being suggested that the credit should go to Brad Pitt’s girlfriend.

While Pitt and Jolie had not been officially divorced, they have been legally separated since 2019, allowing them to potentially remarry. Rumors have indicated that Pitt may be headed down that road with current flame Innes de Ramon. Page Six quotes an unnamed “insider” that it was de Ramon who had been urging her beau to just put the whole issue behind them, saying…

While we have to take an unnamed source with a grain of salt, it’s certainly possible that de Ramon was a significant influence on this decision. While the couple has been together since 2022, and it took this long for a settlement to happen, all rumors have indicated things are only getting more serious between them. It could be that both de Ramon and Pitt wanted to make a clean break from the former relationship before taking the new one to new places.

The divorce agreement is sealed, so we don’t know exactly what the terms of the settlement are, or how they might have changed from what either side had been fighting for previously. If the claim that Pitt was the one who moved to end the battle is true, he may have given up on things he had been fighting for. But we'll likely never know the truth of what went down.

We know that child custody was a major sticking point, with Jolie fighting to limit Pitt’s visitation. At this point, that may have simply not been a significant issue. Of Pitt and Joie’s six children, only the youngest, 16-year-old twins, are still minors. The rest are adults who are free to see their parents as they choose.

While the divorce proceedings are behind Pitt and Joie, their time in court on opposite sides is not. Brad Pitt is still suing his ex-wife over the sale of her share of the Château Miraval the pair owned. Pitt claims the two had an agreement that one would not sell without the permission of the other. Jolie's motion to dismiss the suit recently failed, meaning the case is a little closer to trial now.

Both actresses took part in The Hollywood Reporter’s annual roundtable discussion where some of the performers from the best films of 2024 discussed their acting process and what they’ve learned from Hollywood. Swinton was included for her work in Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, as well as her musical film The End. Jolie was also invited for her critically acclaimed performance in Maria. Swinton recalled a time where she initially bonded with Almodóvar because they both felt like outsiders at a big celebrity event. Swinton said:

Swinton has likely been invited to dozens of fancy star-studded events, so it’s surprising to hear she was so enamoured by the whole thing. She was too nervous to talk to anyone else and ended up standing in the corner for most of the night. Jolie then said that she wishes Swinton had come over and talked to her, as she often feels lonely at events like this. The Girl, Interrupted star, who is frequently candid about her Hollywood experience, explained:

Swinton clearly felt a kinship with the fellow actress in the moment, because it turns out they were both nervous and intimidated to talk to each other, so they refrained from talking at all. Swinton pointed out how human such a moment was, as people in general can be shy, no matter how famous or glamorous. She said:

I guess even famous people get overwhelmed by other famous people, showing how these events can still be awkward even when filled with the most charismatic and talented people in the world. Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt on Sept. 19, 2016, but between figuring out custody regarding their six children, their shared winery property, and abuse allegations, the couple have had a long winding road to cutting ties since their split. As someone who used to be an 18-year-old teen girl like Anne Hathaway was, I can recall looking to celebrities and their fashion sense to inform my own, and making a purchase like this would have been a huge deal to me, too.

It’s especially fun to hear about Anne Hathaway’s early days as a star now that she announced The Princess Diaries 3 is happening. Hathaway shared the good news a couple of months ago with word that Joy Ride director Adele Lim is set to helm the feature. We don’t know The Princess Diaries 3 release date right now, or if Julie Andrews, Chris Pine and such will be joining, but we certainly hope they will accompany Hathaway.

Additionally, Angelina Jolie has been out and about with her first role in three years with Maria, which has earned rave reviews and is now streaming on Netflix. Perhaps if she hasn't already, one day Hathaway will get to tell Jolie about her funny first purchase!

Plus, the two are the proud owners of Oscar statuettes that represent the remarkable work they’ve put into their roles.

The two Hollywood starlets are about to have an upcoming movie in common as well. Pitt has been legally single since 2019, so he’s free to remarry at any time, despite the fact that his divorce from Angelina Jolie has never been finalized.

Pitt and Jolie battled over child custody for a long time. That issue is almost entirely resolved by the simple passage of time. Four of the six children that Pitt and Jolie share are now legally adults. Daughter Shiloh recently turned 18, while twins Knox and Vivianne are currently 16.

The other major issue at hand has been ownership of a winery in France that the couple purchased together before they were married. Angelina Jolie sold her share, but Brad Pitt sued to invalidate the sale. Jolie countersued, Pitt, but she recently dropped that lawsuit. On-lookers wondered if dropping the suit was an indication that Pitt and Jolie may be close to settling. However, Pitt's original suit is heading to trial. While the result of the trial may finally allow the divorce to become finalized, it will still be some time before we get there.

If Brad Pitt is planning to propose, then the question arises when that might happen. It’s certainly possible he’s waiting for all outstanding issues with his ex-wife to be resolved, closing one chapter of his life before starting a new one. Jolie's best movies such as Girl, Interrupted, Gia, and Changeling drew the eyes of critics and audiences, receiving multiple nominations and accolades. With a compliment like that, I’m even more pumped to add the upcoming biopic to my watchlist.

There’s just something about watching a Netflix biopic that’s so epic. Whether it’s the catchy musical biopic Tick, Tick…Boom! or the Barack and Michelle Obama-produced film Rustin, the streaming service honors these real-life individuals by showcasing the extraordinary lives they lived. Angelina Jolie’s Maria doesn’t seem too far off from Netflix’s excellent biopic streak portraying the final years of opera singer Maria Callas’ life.

At a post-screen AFI Fest conversation moderated by Barry Jenkins (via IndieWire), the American filmmaker told Jolie he loved her movie so much that he compared it to a Denzel Washington classic. Now, that makes me want to see the upcoming music biopic even more:

Barry Jenkins makes an excellent point in that you know someone is talented when they lose themselves in their roles. You no longer see the actor but the real-life person they’re portraying.

That’s how it felt when I first saw the amazing must-watch biopic Malcolm X where I felt like I was seeing the human rights activist right before me. I saw Denzel Washington put strength, charisma, and emotional range that made Malcolm X relatable for audiences. It felt the same for me seeing David Oyelowo playing Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma where it was like the American minister came back to life on the big screen. If Angelina Jolie did the same thing for Maria Callas and told her story with justice, this makes me all the more excited to learn about the final years of the famed opera singer.

For the past several years, Angelina Jolie has been engaged in a number of legal issues involving her ex-husband, Brad Pitt. With that, she’s now allegedly looking to turn over a “new leaf,” and that could include adding some more romance to her life.

Back in 2022, the Tomb Raider veteran sued Brad Pitt, accusing him of domestic violence. The crux of the lawsuit was an alleged 2016 incident, in which Brad Pitt was said to have physically and verbally abused the actress and their kids while they were on a plane. News of the Wanted star’s decision to drop the suit against Pitt, who denied the allegations, surfaced in early October. At that time, an insider for OK Magazine alleged that the actress was upbeat after making that decision. In the unnamed individual’s words:

The source’s comments suggest that 49-year-old Angelina Jolie is ready to turn the page and start a new chapter. Another person, who spoke with OK, took it a step further by talking about how her supposed new mindset could impact her love life. Jolie has more recently been wrapped up in romance rumors involving British rapper Akala. This insider couldn’t confirm any kind of relationship between the two, though they did claim that Jolie knows how she wants to approach the dating pool:

When it comes to what the A-lister has “been through” over the last several years, she’s been engaged in a lengthy divorce, which she formally filed for in 2014. And it was in 2022, that now-60-year-old Brad Pitt sued his former wife, as he claimed that she sold her share of their Chateau Miraval without consulting him. It would seem that, as of this writing, that particular lawsuit is ongoing.

If Angelina Jolie does end up pursuing love in her life, that could coincide with another major change. At the beginning of the year, it was reported that the actress could become one of the latest celebrities to leave Hollywood for a less-buzzy locale. Jolie later confirmed her plans to leave Los Angeles when all of her kids are at least 18. As for what she plans to do after that, the Changeling star wants to spend time in Cambodia and visit her family and friends across the world. One would think that she might also continue to star in, produce or direct films and TV productions as well. What exactly lies ahead for the star remains to be seen, but one would hope that she’ll be able to proceed with her life in a way that suits her.

While walking the red carpet for the LA premiere of Maria at AFI Film Fest, the actress and mother of six caught up with E! News, which shared a portion of the interview to Instagram. Given the chance to speak with Angelina Jolie, the entertainment company asked her if she’d ever consider starring in a romantic comedy. After carefully considering the question, the star explained how she believes Maleficent has already granted her that opportunity in some respects:

Sorry, Ms. Jolie, but you’re definitely on your own with that opinion — at least, as far as I’m concerned. Maleficent may be one of Disney’s best live-action adaptations to date, but there is no way it would be considered a rom-com. Not only is it eerily dark for Disney standards, but it’s also extremely grim for a rom-com, which usually airs on the side of bright and cheery — hence the “comedy” aspect of the genre.

And, of course, there’s the obvious fact that Maleficent contains hardly any romantic relationships aside from the opening scenes that show the titular character falling in love with Stefan, only for him to betray her. Sure, she might grow close to Diaval later on, but their relationship appears to be more platonic, despite what the lead actress might think.

The funny thing is that Angelina Jolie has appeared in a handful of films that could be considered rom-coms. A fact fans were eager to point out in the comment section of the Instagram video mentioning 2005’s Mr. And Mrs. Smith and 2002’s Life or Something Like It. While not true rom-coms, they make a better argument than Maleficent does — though one can’t blame Jolie for not wanting to mention the 2005 action/comedy film considering its connection to her ex-husband, Brad Pitt.

Still, it’s mind-blowing that someone with the Eternals star's talent and decades in the industry has never appeared in a straight-up rom-com. Now, that the genre is on the rise — thanks to box office hit Anyone But You and other flicks — perhaps the Tony-winning producer will reconsider and stretch her acting chops in a fun and swoon-worthy movie for once. After all, if anyone can make the list of best romantic comedies of all time, it's Angelina Jolie!

During the course of her THR interview, Jolie declined to comment on some rather personal subjects that have been in the news as of late. Framing her decision with a totally valid concern, the former Tomb Raider star shared this main difference that separates the modern Tinseltown from its past eras:

And considering pop superstar Chappell Roan’s recent VMA apperance showed us another talent who’s been pushing for enforceable boundaries with the media, this sort of mindfulness isn’t just Jolie reflecting wistfully on the Hollywood of the past. If anything, it could be the wave of the future.

Those California roots aren’t what’s keeping her in the major city, though. She’s the mother to six children of varying ages, but all of them are indeed growing up. Also, as she alluded to, she’s also still contending with her years-long divorce from Brad Pitt. Previous reports indicated that Angelina Jolie was planning to leave Hollywood and move to New York. However, based on what she told THR, it doesn’t sound like her next chapter will involve more than just the Big Apple:

Considering the Oscar winner’s extensive travels as a humanitarian, it makes sense that she’d want to visit different parts of the world after leaving LA. She later mentioned to the trade that she still has aspirations as a director, and one would think that she’ll likely continue to act as well. All in all, I’d say that the idea of her working when she wants and traveling the rest of the time sounds good.

It’s been interesting to hear stars give their reasons for shipping out of Hollywood. Alexa and Carlos PenaVega moved to Hawai’i several years ago, citing the pressures of the industry and their desire to raise their kids outside of LA. Meanwhile, the reason Mark Wahlberg moved his family to Las Vegas in 2022 was to give his loved ones “a fresh start” and allow his kids the opportunity to pursue their dreams. Though the Wahlbergs did recently return to Hollywood for the premiere of Mark’s latest movie, The Union.

Personally, I can understand the personal reasons behind Angelina Jolie and her peers wanting to leave Hollywood behind. The city is exciting and, in some ways, addictive, but a person ultimately needs to do what’s right for the well-being of themselves and their loved ones. Here’s hoping that when all of her kids are finally of age, Jolie is able to move forward with her plans as she desires.

In the meantime, though, Angelina Jolie is promoting her upcoming opera biopic, Maria. The film will eventually be streamable with a Netflix subscription and may be released amid the 2024 movie schedule.

The upcoming music biopic is already getting Oscar buzz, and Angelina Jolie earned an 8-minute standing ovation at the premiere of Maria in Venice on August 29. But allow me to back up to a couple of hours prior to that, as the actress — who’s now one award away from EGOT status — was the epitome of Hollywood glam in her gold custom Tamara Ralph gown:

Off of her shoulders, the Maleficent star added a faux fur stole that only enhanced the gown, and I’m simply obsessed with the dark red lip that adds the perfect pop of color to the gorgeously monochromatic look. Lucky for her, the stellar outfit was accompanied by a stellar reaction, with Maria earning praise following its screening.

Critics Call Angelina Jolie’s Performance In Maria ‘Career-Defining’

To prepare for Maria, Angelina Jolie reportedly took seven months of opera singing lessons. She is, after all, portraying the Greek opera singer Maria Callas over the final week of her life in 1970s Paris. Owen Gleiberman of Variety calls Jolie’s performance “commanding,” while the movie overall may have been overly fatalistic. He writes:

Stephanie Bunbury of Deadline similarly praises the actress, noting that her training in opera singing pays off as we see the physical effects of Marie Callas’ craft in the performance. Bunbury continues:

Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent gives it 4 out of 5 stars, calling it a career-defining performance for Angelina Jolie. The critic compares Jolie’s embodiment of the singer to the stars of Pablo Lorrain’s past biographical dramas Jackie, starring Natalie Portman, and Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart. Loughrey writes:

With such good reviews, it will be exciting to see if Maria earns Angelina Jolie another trip to the Academy Awards. I sure hope so, and only in part because I live for her red carpet moments.

Being a celebrity is a tricky thing. Because while it offers exciting opportunties and money, it makes one's personal life into a public matter. Just look at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, or the ongoing legal battle between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie for the last seven years. Their daughter Shiloh Jolie-Pitt has also gotten involved, and is trying to drop Brad's last name. And here's why her trial to make that happen recently got postponed.

Shiloh made her intentions to drop Pitt from her name clear in a newspaper, and is seemingly ready to bring the matter to trial. But there was a recent speed bump in that process. People reports that the upcoming court case was postponed because a background check wasn't completed in time. Jolie-Pitt's lawyer Peter Levine made a statement to the outlet, which reads:

There you have it. This doesn't appear to be specific to Jolie-Pitt's case, but is something that's standard for all name-change requests. So Brad and Angelina's daughter is going to have to wait a bit longer before finally going to trial in an attempt to have her father's last name removed.

Shiloh filed this request back in May, and made headlines in the midst of Jolie and Pitt's long divorce proceedings. Their separation began back in 2016, but they've been fighting in the courts, including a dispute about a winery they share. Add in their daughter's request for a name change and there's a lot of legal stuff over the family.

Back when Shiloh Jolie-Pitt first issued the name change, an anonymous source told People how the Fight Club icon was responding, offering:

It's understandable that he might feel this way, and the fact that the entire public nd his generations of fans know about this family turmoil shows the way fame is truly. double-edged sword. We'll just have to see how this legal situation with Shiloh shakes out, as well as if/when the divorce proceedings between Jolie and Pitt finally reach a conclusion.

Their 18-year-old daughter, Shiloh Nouvel, is dropping her father’s surname and has taken the necessary steps to do so. Another development on this front just cropped up in the past week, as public notice of the change was listed in a newspaper. Some may be confused as to why that happened, but a legal expert has since weighed in. And in doing that, they’ve shed some light on just why the teen took that course of action. 

Why Did Shiloh Jolie-Pitt’s Name Change Get Published In A Newspaper?

The name change was specifically mentioned in an edition of The Los Angeles Times this past week. After it was printed, David Glass – an attorney that deals in family law – spoke to People about the public notice. Glass explained to the news outlet that the blurb in the paper is part of the name-change process. In other words, said confirmation must be made in that way in order for a person to move forward with their plans. Glass also went on to say the following: 

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt formally filed the paperwork to drop the latter portion of her surname this past May 27, which also marked her 18th birthday. As of this writing, Angelina Jolie has not spoken about her daughter’s decision, given that Shiloh went through the legal process herself, even hiring her own lawyer. As for Brad Pitt, he’s reportedly “upset” over Shiloh’s course of action. This legal development also came to light only a month after it was reported that Shiloh might move in with Brad after staying with mother Angelina. As for whether the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood could intervene in in Shiloh’s case, Dave Glass provided a theory: 

An exact reason for the name change has not been confirmed by Shiloh Jolie-Pitt or any family representative as of this writing. However, some insiders believe that this all speaks to the state of Brad’s relationship with Shiloh and by extension, his other kids.

Where Does Brad Pitt Reportedly Stand With His Children?

According to insiders, Brad Pitt is mostly estranged from his older kids but has had some contact with his younger children within the last several years. Shiloh aside, Brad and Angelina Jolie share Maddox Chivan (22), Pax Thien (20), Zahara Marley (19) and twins Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline (16). There’s been no indication that any of the other siblings have sought to drop their dad’s surname. However, in late 2023, fans “peeped” that Zahara dropped “Pitt” amid her sorority induction ceremony. 

The kids are also linked to one of the legal battles that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been engaged in. In 2021, Jolie accused Pitt of domestic violence, alleging that he physically and verbally abused her and the children while they were on an airplane in 2016. Sometime later, Pitt countersued the Maleficent star over the Château Miraval winery they used to own together. As part of his suit, Pitt claimed that Jolie sold her share without consulting him first, per a prior agreement that had been reached. That case remains in contention. 

As for Shiloh Jolie-Pitt’s name change, the newspaper announcement seems to mark a big step in her achieving her ultimate goal. Those following this story will just have to wait for further updates on the matter, which could possibly arise over the next several months.

David Duchovny says that’s what he saw back when he “discovered” her for the film Playing God back in the late 1990s.

Unless you’re a serious fan of either Angelina Jolie or David Duchovny’s early attempts to break into film after making a name for himself on the X-Files, there’s a decent chance you’ve never seen 1997’s Playing God, which stars Duchovny as a doctor turned underworld surgeon. For some reason, it's one of those movies that's just been forgotten by time. Appearing on Radio Andy the actor says that when Angelina Jolie came into audition for the role of the female lead he insisted on casting her as he felt she was a star in the making. He explained…

Exactly when a new star is “discovered” is rarely perfectly clear, as Duchovny himself admits by saying that both he did and did not discover Jolie. He didn’t really discover Angelina Jolie, and yet, he feels like he did. The actress had some significant roles prior to Playing God, including most notably the early internet drama Hackers, but it seems Duchovny didn’t know who she was, so he felt like he was seeing something nobody else had seen before.

And maybe he’s right. If Jolie hadn’t gotten the role in Playing God perhaps it wouldn’t have given her the credibility or notoriety that helped her get other roles. It’s hard to imagine that Angelina Jolie wouldn’t have become a star eventually, as Duchovny said, he knew she was a movie star, but perhaps things wouldn’t have happened for her quite as fast as they did if he hadn’t “discovered” her.

At this point, Angelina Jolie may be better known to a generation of movie fans as the ex-wife of Brad Pitt. She’s certainly spent more of her time dealing with the legal ramifications of divorce, mostly ownership of a French winery, instead of being on the big screen. Still, when she does appear in a movie again she will automatically draw attention because she certainly is a movie star.

Jolie recently won a Tony Award, as one of the producers of the Broadway version of The Outsiders, with her previous Academy Award, she’s now halfway to an EGOT. Perhaps Jolie has even more worlds of entertainment left to conquer.

Her 2024 is off to another great start. The Euphoria star hosted SNL this past season, and now she is leading the spooky horror flick Immaculate. She is a major star, and attended this year'scoveted Vanity Fair Oscars Party in style, as she rocked a gorgeous Marilyn Monroe tribute gown that was once worn by Angelina Jolie.

What to know? The archival dress in question was designed by Marc Bouwer, who originally designed the dress for Angelina Jolie. The Mr. And Mrs. Smith wore the cream colored dress in 2004, with Sweeney rocking it at the 2024 Oscars. This fashion choice tying her to Angelina Jolie feels like Sweeney is owning her own narrative, and comparisons the media has made to other actresses who had similar attention.

The Marilyn Monroe tribute was another layer to this whole thing. The dress resembles the white dress worn by Monroe in the 1955 Billy Wilder film, The Seven Year Itch. It has become an iconic image of this time in American cinema, and Marilyn Monroe as the sex symbol of her time. There is so much being reflected in this dress, and Sweeney feels like the perfect actress to dawn such a gown. Her blonde hair completed the look, showcasing her to the world as our modern day Monroe, with the edge of a 2000s era Jolie.

After Vivienne Jolie-Pitt was sold, she had to tell her mother that she needed to check it out. Then, while Voight was on the set of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megapolis, the Wanted actress called her father to tell him she’ll be producing the musical. How ironic that The Champ actor is working with Coppola on Megapolis when one of Coppola's best movies was the 1983 book adaptation of The Outsiders.

Another interesting point that Jon Voight pointed out about his granddaughter was that she collaborated greatly with Angelina Jolie, remarking that the apple sure doesn’t fall far from the tree:

The Los Angeles native has made her mark behind the scenes as a director for movies like A Place in Time, Unbroken, By the Sea and more. We already saw Vivienne Jolie-Pitt work with her celebrity mother when she was a little girl in Maleficent, but it looks like she’s following her mother’s footsteps on Broadway more in a behind-the-scenes role. During their time working on The Outsiders, Jolie-Pitt worked alongside her mother as her volunteer assistant. Angelina Jolie remarked that Vivienne reminds her of her own mother in taking theater seriously and her role of how to contribute to the Broadway production.

Jon Voight seems so proud of his daughter, Angelina Jolie, for winning her first Tony, as well as his granddaughter for motivating her mother to be involved in The Outsiders in the first place. It looks like the Jolie-Pitts are a talented family, and I can’t wait to see where Vivienne’s direction in entertainment goes from here.

While her famous father has yet to formally comment on the matter, an insider has now dropped claims regarding how he feels about the teenager’s decision. And, if per those comments, the actor isn’t happy with this turn of events. 

How Does The Oscar Winner Supposedly Feel About His Child’s Decision

Shiloh Jolie-Pitt went through with the filing on May 27, which also marked her 18th birthday. As stipulated in the legal documents, her plan is to simply go by the name Shiloh Jolie. One week after that filing, a source for People shared purported details on how her father is handling the situation. The insider went as far as to say that the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood star is “upset” over the decision. Said person also spoke to what the current state of his relationship with his six kids looks like right now: 

In addition to Shiloh, Brad Pitt also shares 22-year-old Maddox, 19-year-old Zahara, 20-year-old Pax and 15-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. The last few years have seen a number of rumors surface in regard to how close Brad is with his kids. Reports of Shiloh’s legal plan come months after it was reported that she wanted to move in with Brad in order to “shake things up.” At present, the actor has reportedly found happiness in his relationship with Ines de Ramon, but his separation from his kids allegedly “pains him.” Another insider also added: 

Angelina Jolie has yet to speak on Shiloh’s decision to change her name, because she was not involved in the process. The young lady reportedly hired her own lawyer and paid for everything herself. 

What’s Been Said About Brad Pitt And His Relationships With His Kids?

Past reports have included claims about just how involved the Ocean’s Eleven star is in his kids' lives. Some have since dropped their own speculative comments on the matter across the Internet. On that note, in late 2023 some social media users noticed that one of the couple’s other daughters, Zahara, dropped Brad’s last name amid her sorority induction ceremony. At this time, it’s unclear as to whether that was the result of a legal change or simply personal preference. While insiders have claimed that the A-lister is estranged from his older children, his relationship with his younger twins has reportedly held up amid his legal battles with his former wife.

One of the biggest points of contention in that matter arose in 2021, when Angelina Jolie accused Brad Pitt of domestic violence. She, more specifically, claimed that he physically and verbally abused her and the kids while they were on an airplane in 2016. Pitt has since denied the accusations, and he eventually sued Jolie in 2022 over allegedly selling her share of their Chateau Miraval without clearing it with him. Per a recent update on that winery suit, Jolie and her team must submit “all non-privileged documents in her possession, custody, or control" from the past eight years among other materials. 

As for Shiloh Jolie-Pitt’s campaign to have her name legally changed, it remains to be seen how that will all pan out. As for Brad Pitt, he’s continuing to take on jobs, with his latest movie, Wolfs opening in theaters on September 20 as part of the 2024 movie schedule.

Ever since the point when they first split up in 2016, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s relationship has seemingly been anything but cordial and agreeable, save for brief moments of respite between revealing interviews and/or legal filings about their controversial 2016 flight. Their strife has obviously had an impact on the six children they share together, and potentially inspired several of the offspring to alter their surnames in a way that drops the “Pitt” entirely. Shiloh Jolie-Pitt is the latest to go that route, and the way she went about it is why her Maleficent-starring mom hasn’t addressed the issue.

Weeks after rumors spread suggesting that Shiloh Jolie-Pitt aimed to move in with Brad Pitt in the midst of the celebs’ legal battle over the Chateau Miraval winery, the teen reportedly filed paperwork on Monday, May 27, with the goal of legally changing her last name from Jolie-Pitt to just Jolie. According to Entertainment Tonight, that move was made totally independently, which is partially why fans haven’t heard Angelina Jolie’s thoughts on the change yet. According to the outlet’s source:

Notably, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt is said to be the first amongst her siblings to make the name change officially recognized by the law, as opposed to going by a truncated version solely for professional or personal reasons. Making things appear all the more urgent for her is the fact that May 27 was also her 18th birthday (as well as Memorial Day), so it’s clear that losing “Pitt” was extremely important to her.

It’s unclear whether or not Angelina Jolie actually was aware of her daughter’s plans before the filing was submitted, but it doesn’t appear she tried to change anything if so. Given the legal system’s not-exactly-speedy way of handling things, it’s unclear when the switch to “Shiloh Jolie” will be finalized. But perhaps that’s when the former Lara Croft portrayer will share a statement about it.

Brad Pitt previously spoke about Shiloh’s awesome dance moves in a video that went viral back in 2022, and around the time when she was reportedly planning to move in with him, it was stated that she adores her daddio, and that he was happy to have her, as she’s a total daddy’s girl. If that’s the case, perhaps the name change isn’t reflective of any family turmoil, but just a way to have a shorter surname.

It’s certainly possible that Shiloh Jolie-Pitt’s motivation to legally change her name came from seeing several of her siblings drop the “Pitt” out of their names in the last year or so amidst the winery lawsuit (which took a turn recently when the judge handling the case requested Jolie turn in the lion’s share of paperwork regarding Chateau Miraval.) For instance, the oldest sibling Maddox, who was adopted when Jolie was still married to Billy Bob Thornton, is said to not use Pitt publicly anymore, per TMZ.

The first of the six kids to go that route, however, was Zahara Jolie-Pitt. The 18-year-old Spelman University student was seen on video in November 2023 pledging for Alpha Kappa Alpha, where she noticeably did not use her full last name, and instead went by Zahara Marley Jolie.

More recently, the former couple’s 15-year-old daughter was specifically noted with the name “Vivienne Jolie” within the Playbill for the Broadway production of The Outsiders that she helped to co-produce alongside Angelina Jolie. It’s still unclear if Vivienne, Zahara, or anyone beyond Shiloh is planning to get legally permanent with their own surname tweaks, so it’ll be interesting to see how things shake out in the coming months.

Greta Gerwig is quickly becoming a voice of a generation. Her direction and writing of Barbie has been praised far and wide for its snappy dialog and heartfelt message. George Clooney

Not only is George Clooney one of the most bankable movie stars ever, he's also a fantastic director. His acting career is legendary and his directing career, while not quite at the level of his acting, is still fantastic. He's directed TV (Catch-22) and movies (The Boys In The Boat, The Midnight Sky, Good Night, and Good Luck, among others) and you can be sure there will be more from him.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie's directing career hasn't always gotten the best reviews, but I'd say her movies are very underrated. The talented actress has an eye for behind the camera as well, and movies like Unbroken and First They Killed My Father are powerful movies.

Billy Bob Thornton

Billy Bob Thornton's acting career came on as a slow burn to fame, but his directing career started with a band. His first film was a masterpiece called Sling Blade. he followed that up with the underrated All The Pretty Horse and a few others, though his pace has slowed over the last couple of decades. Let's hope he finds that directing bug again. 

Ben Stiller

There was a time in the '90s and '00s when it seemed like Ben Stiller was in every movie released. Not only was he working hard in front of the camera, he was killing it behind the camera as well. Starting really with Reality Bites, and moving on to great movies like the controversial but hilarious Tropic Thunder, and the Zoolander movies. 

Jodie Foster

The great Jodie Foster has been an acclaimed actor and star since her teenage years and of course, that talent has translated to directing. Though lately she's done mostly TV work like directing episodes of Black Mirror and Orange is the New Black, she's done a few movies too, like Little Man Tate and Money Monster.

Kevin Costner

In addition to being one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, Kevin Costner has never shied away from making epic films. Though he's only directed four movies in his career, they have all been big films. Starting with Dances With Wolves in 1990, he's since directed The Postman, Open Range, and 2024's Horizon: An American Saga.

Tim Robbins

The directing bug caught Tim Robbins in the early '90s and he directed a couple of great movies with Bob Roberts and Dead Man Walking. He's directed a smattering of movies and TV shows more recently, but he's mostly stuck to acting over the last few years. 

Sean Penn

Since the early 1980s, Sean Penn has been wowing moviegoers with his impressive acting chops and diversity. In the '90s he dipped his toe into directing with his first film, The Indian Runner and has directed a good handful of movies since, with his best being Into The Wild in 2007.

Acting-wise Zach Braff's big break came as a regular cast member of the hit sitcom Scrubs. As a directed, he burst onto the scene with his very first movie, Garden State in 2004. He's continued directing here and there over the last 20 years, including the great movie about getting older, Going In Style, and a few others, in addition to some TV work. 

Warren Beatty

In the 1970s, there was no bigger movie star than Warren Beatty. By the end of the decade, he had moved into directing as well, starting with 1978's Heaven Can Wait and continuing the '80s and '90s with acclaimed movies like Red and maybe his most remembered, Dick Tracy in 1990.

Diane Keaton

Diane Keaton is a force of nature. For decades she's been one of the best and most popular actresses in Hollywood, and though she's only dipped her toes into directing, mostly in TV, she's on this list for one important reason. Keaton directed the music video for "Heaven Is A Place On Earth" by Belinda Carlisle and that is a stone-cold Gen X classic. 

Kenneth Branagh

Kenneth Branagh might be as well known for his directing as he is for his acting, and that's really saying something. Not only has he directed some of the best Shakespeare adaptions for the silver screen, but more recently he's been killing it with his Agatha Christie adaptations. 

Leonard Nimoy

Appropriately, Leonard Nimoy's first foray into feature film direction came in the Star Trek franchise when he directed both Star Trek III: The Search For Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. Outside of the iconic franchise he helped make famous he also directed the beloved Three Men and a Baby. 

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone has always been a self-starter. His work to get the original Rocky made is legendary and after it made him a huge star, he wasted no time getting into directing, starting with Rocky II and adding Rocky III, Rocky IV, and 2006's Rocky Balboa as well. Of course, he's also directed in two other franchises he was at the center of with 2008's Rambo and the first Expendable movie. 

Helen Hunt

This one might surprise you, but Helen Hunt has had an impressive career as a director. Most of her work has been on television on shows varying from her own Mad About You and This Is Us. She also has two feature films under her belt with 2007's Then She Found Me and 2014's Ride. 

Joel Edgerton

Joel Edgerton is seemingly everywhere these days, popping up in all kinds of movies and TV shows from Star Wars stuff to Dark Matter. He's also started directing, but his output is limited, with 2015's underrated The Gift and 2018 Boy Erased. Let's hope he finds more time to direct in his busy schedule. 

Accents are incredibly difficult and to be clear, this isn't knocking any of the people on this list's acting talents. Some of the best actors in the world often struggle with accents. In fact, everyone on this list should be praised for taking the risk and even attempting one. That said, this is still a list of actors with bad accents in a role. 

Dick Van Dyke – Mary Poppins

Quite possibly the most notorious of an actor messing up an accent is Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. The Midwest native's take on a London Cockney accent is... rough. The rest of his performance is legendary, of course, but boy, it's rough to hear him talk sometimes. 

Keanu Reeves – Bram Stoker's Dracula

Keanu Reeves is an icon, but let's be real, some of his acting performances in the past haven't been the best. The most glaring example is his performance in Bram Stoker's Dracula. It's a stilled example of an English accent that comes across as really unconfident. He's much better in the John Wick movies, to say the least. 

Don Cheadle – Ocean's Eleven

Don Cheadle is one of the best actors in Hollywood and is proof that even the best get it wrong sometimes. His cockney accent in Ocean's Eleven is brutal. In a way, it can be excused, as everyone in the movie is just chewing the scenery the whole time, but still, you expect more. Especially because we've all seen him do amazing accents like in Hotel Rwanda, a movie so good you never want to see it again. 

Daniel Craig - Knives Out

This one might get some pushback from fans – and I am a huge fan of Daniel Craig and Knives Out – but the accent is distracting. Cajun accents are tough, so for even attempting it, Craig gets credit, but he's been much better at other accents, like his straight southern accent in Lucky Logan. 

Kevin Costner – Thirteen Days

Thirteen Days is one of the best movies about the Cold War we've ever seen, but Kevin Costner's Boston accent isn't what makes it great. Costner's performance outshines the accent, but it's still pretty distracting, as it's way off. Boston accents are hard to do, so we'll forgive him. 

Tom Cruise – Far And Away

Another one of the most notorious accents in Hollywood history is Tom Cruise's attempt at an Irish accent in Far And Away. The movie itself is a lot better than its reputation would have you believe, but Cruise, one of the biggest movie stars of the last few decades, has a rough go of it. He's not alone in that, either. 

John Malkovich – Rounders

John Malkovich's career is filled with amazing, and often over-the-top performances. Maybe his most over-the-top is that of the Russian "KGB" in Rounders. His accent is presumably supposed to be Russian, but wow, who knows what it really is? It's wild, that's for sure. He even joked to co-star Matt Damon that he is a "terrible actor," which, of course, is false, even here. 

Brad Pitt – Meet Joe Black

This one is on the list because it's a popular choice as one of the worst ever, but I'm here to defend it...sort of. His Cajun patois is not great, that's true, but, for one, that's a really hard accent to nail, and some have defended it. It also could be argued that it fits his character to not quite understand how to speak normally, as he talks about in other parts of the film. Pitt gets a pass here. 

Mickey Rooney – Breakfast At Tiffany's

In one of the most indefensible roles in the history of Hollywood, Mickey Rooney's bad accent is actually the least offensive part. You can argue about 1961 being a different time, but it wasn't that different, and having Rooney play an offensive caricature of a Japanese man was called out even at the time for how offensive it was. 

Julia Roberts – Michael Collins

The beloved Julia Roberts has been in some of the best movies of the last 30 years. Michael Collins isn't a bad movie, but it's also not among Roberts' best films. While she can usually be counted on for great performances, her Irish accent here misses the mark. 

Anne Hathaway – One Day

Anne Hathaway is an Oscar winner for good reason. She's consistently great in her movies, and in roles that range from rom-coms to comic supervillains. In One Day, she adopts a British accent...sort of. It's not bad when she nails it, but it's wildly inconsistent. 

Brad Pitt - Seven Years in Tibet

Seven Years In Tibet is an underrated movie in my opinion. In all honesty, I don't know if Brad Pitt's accent is truly bad, or if it's just really annoying. I tend to think it's a combo of both. Her performance otherwise is great, and the movie's visuals are stunning, making it well worth suffering through the iffy accent. 

Jack Nicholson – The Departed

This is one that might get some pushback, but I think Jack Nicholson's Boston accent in The Departed is terrible. Given all the great accents in the movie, some by Boston natives, some not, this one really sticks out as not being all that great. Nicholson is awesome as the menacing Frank Costello, but he should have just played it straight. 

Angelina Jolie – Alexander

Okay, what in the ancient world is going on here? Angelina Jolie's accent in Alexander is just wild. It's sort of Greek, sure, but we're not even sure what the ancient Greeks sounded like, so why even go here with this acting choice? Jolie is a wonderful actor and director, but this is not her finest moment. 

Emma Watson – The Bling Ring

Emma Watson's biggest accent sin in The Bling Ring is how inconsistent it is. Maybe the hardest part for an actor is staying consistent, but this one still needs to be highlighted here. A Valley Girl, Watson is not. 

Ewan McGregor – Black Hawk Down

Black Hawk Down has an amazing cast, many of whom are not American, all playing American servicemen. To be honest, all the accents in the movie, from Orlando Bloom, Tom Hardy, and others are a little dicey. It probably isn't fair to only call out Ewan McGregor, but it's not his finest work, either. 

Kevin Costner – Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

What can be said here? It's the bad accent that beats them all. Kevin Costner's accent (or sometimes lack of) in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves has been knocked ad nauseam over the years and there isn't much more to say about it. It's not just poor, it's not even there sometimes. 

Cameron Diaz – Gangs Of New York

Let's be clear, Cameron Diaz is not alone with her poor accent in Gangs of New York. Leonardo DiCaprio isn't at his best, either. It's maybe a little more striking in Diaz's case though. It's hard though, when you are going up with Daniel Day-Lewis, who probably spent months and months perfecting his American accent for the role.  

Blake Lively – The Town

If you're not from Boston, it had be a deceptively difficult accent to master. It's not as simple as dropping the Rs, though that is hard to do consistently also. It's also the long vowels and other more nuanced parts of the accent that make it very tricky. Blake Lively is great in The Town, but her accent leaves a lot to be desired. 

Vanessa Hudgens – The Princess Switch

In one of the weirder choices on this list, Vanessa Hudgens decided to go with what is ostensively a British accent in The Princess Switch when she easily could have just gone with her regular accent. Sure, she needed to differentiate herself from...herself as she was also playing the other role in the movie in this Parent Trap-like movie, but still, she was a princess of a fictional country, the accent could have been anything 

Scarlett Johansson – Don Jon

Scarlett Johansson is from New York, and is an excellent actor. That's why it's such a surprise that she missed with a New Jersey accent in Don Jon. Once again, it's an example of a great performance losing a point or two because of the dodgy accent.

Jared Leto – House Of Gucci

Most of the actors in House Of Gucci struggle a little with the Italian accents. Jared Leto, however, sounds like a cartoon character. It's more like Mario than Paolo Gucci. I give him props for trying, heck I give them all props for trying, but it just doesn't work. 

Mel Gibson – Braveheart

I have a lot of problems with Braveheart. The history is notoriously poor, and the acting by Mel Gibson is so over the top, that it's comical, hence all the memes, right? Often lost in that is how sketchy Gibson's Scottish accent is in the movie. 

Quentin Tarantino – Django Unchained

Quentin Tarantino is arguably the best director of the last 30 years with nine (or ten, depending on how you count Kill Bill) great movies out of nine directed. Django Unchained is no exception, but you can't excuse the Australian accent Tarantino tries to pull off in his acting role in the movie. It's not good - and it's not like he's a bad actor, either. 

Harrison Ford - K-19: The Widowmaker

With all due respect to the Gods of the 1970s and '80s, I don't want to besmirch the great Harrison Ford. Sadly, I have to for his messy attempt at a Russian accent in K-19: The Widowmaker. We all love Ford's gruff voice, but it's better when he sticks with his natural accent. 

Nicole Kidman – Far And Away

Tom Cruise gets a lot of gruff for his Irish accent in Far and Away, but that shouldn't distract from Nicole Kidman's sketchy work. The Aussie struggles as much as the American in the film. 

Alan Rickman - The Butler

Alan Rickman, who is one of my favorite actors ever and responsible for some amazing performances, has one of his most uneven in The Butler as President Ronald Reagan. It's not just the accent, though that is part of it. He speaks weirdly softly and it feels like a shallow performance, which was unlike Rickman, most of the time.  

Michael Caine - On Deadly Ground

The great Michael Caine has but one accent – the Michael Caine Accent. It's so iconic, that it's as imitated as Christopher Walken's. When he gets away from it, it gets a little bizarre, as it does in On Deadly Ground. Now, the semi-retired Caine is co-starring in a Steven Seagal movie, so you can't blame him for really going over the top, even if he misses. 

Brad Pitt – The Devil's Own

In The Devil's Own, Brad Pitt makes a go at an Irish accent. I'll always applaud Pitt for going for tougher roles, but he really does struggle with accents, and here is no exception. It is distracting, but I appreciate that he goes for it. 

Jennifer Lawrence – Red Sparrow

As the winner of one Oscar and owner of three more nominations, Jennifer Lawrence is clearly one of the best actresses so far in the 21st Century. Red Sparrow is not her best work though. The movie is surprisingly boring, and her Russian accent, while far from the worst here, is in and out throughout the whole film. 

Ana De Armas – Blonde

Make no mistake, Ana De Armas made a bold decision to play not only an American actress but one whose voice is very familiar to movie fans everywhere, Marilyn Monroe. Blonde was a challenging choice for the Cuban actress and for that she should be celebrated, but when the brass tacks were down, her accent was not the best part of her performance. 

Charlie Hunnam – Green Street Hooligans

If you want to understand how hard accents can be, look no further than Englishman Charlie Hunnam's attempt at a cockney accent in Green Street Hooligans. While Hunnam is English, he's from Newcastle, not East London, and boy does it show. Hunnam was decent doing an American accent in Sons of Anarchy, but he doesn't kill the cockney accent here, in fact, he's so inconsistent it's distracting in an otherwise super fun cult classic. 

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have now been in court over their separation for longer than they were ever actually married. While some signs point to the Pitt-Jolie divorce coming to an end soon, it’s not looking like the pair will be out of courtrooms, as the lawsuit that Pitt filed over Jolie’s decision to sell her share of the winery is now going to include a lot more paperwork.

Back in 2022, Brad Pitt sued Angelina Jolie over the actress’ decision to sell her share of the Chateau Mirabel winery to the Stoli Group. Pitt claims the pair had an agreement that both parties had to agree on any sale, and Pitt never gave his consent. Now a judge is asking Jolie to turn over nearly a decade of documentation surrounding the winery, including a pile of non-disclosure agreements.

According to E!, Jolie’s legal team is expected to turn over eight years worth of “all non-privileged documents in her possession, custody, or control" in addition to a "privilege log including sufficient factual information regarding any and all responsive documents that Jolie asserts are privileged to allow Plaintiffs to evaluate the merits of Jolie's assertions of privilege.” Essentially, Jolie must turn over anything that isn’t legally privileged or under any sort of NDA, as well as, for any documents that are privileged, she must turn over the paperwork that proves that’s the case. 

Needless to say, that’s a lot of paper that’s going to need to be produced. And while it would seem to be a blow against Jolie, her side is spinning it as a win, as an NDA that Brad Pitt wanted Jolie to agree to is at issue in the case. Apparently Jolie had been willing to sell her share of the winery to him, but she claims the NDA he wanted was more significant than standard NDAs. Jolie refused to agree, and then ultimately sold to the third party.

This is the latest move in what has been a long-running battle over control of the winery. Pitt technically has control of Chateau Mirabel right now. 10% of the stake held by Stoli Group is currently in escrow after the judge placed it there. Pitt had “sold” that amount to Jolie as a wedding present, for a single Euro, making them equal shareholders. Pitt now claims the price was never paid, and thus that percentage should revert to him.

Jolie’s legal team was given 60 days to produce all the documentation Then they will all need to be gone through. We can expect this case will continue to drag on.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been engaged in legal battles over their divorce for years. Issues of child custody have been going on for so long that a number of the children that the pair have together have become legal adults in the period between when this all got started and now. But with some indications that the Pitt-Jolie divorce may be in its endgame, the word is the actress may take the opportunity to do what many celebrities have done in recent years, and leave Hollywood.

It’s become something of a trend as several of Hollywood’s big names have decided to move out of the city. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively went to New York when they were not in Wales. Mark Wahlberg has moved to Las Vegas. Now Radar Online is now reporting that Angelina Jolie may also be headed to the Big Apple, once custody and visitation issues have been finalized with her ex Brad Pitt. 

Pitt And Jolie Have Been Battling Over Custody For Years 

Pitt and Jolie have battled over the custody of their six children. Jolie wanted to retain full custody and severely limit Pitt’s visitation, but a judge ruled in Pitt’s favor back in 2021. Jolie had been unhappy with the ruling, and it seems that while most of the headlines generated by Pitt and Jolie right now surround their fight over a winery they owned together, the custody issues are still ongoing.

At this point, the custody and visitation deal, when it’s finally agreed on, will only impact Knox and Vivianne, the 15-year-old twins and the youngest of Pitt and Jolie’s children. The next oldest, Shiloh, is on the verge of turning 18, and reports are that when she does, she reportedly plans to move in with her father. That change would have potentially been a minor one, as Pitt and Jolie currently live only blocks away from each other, but if the Maleficent star does move to New York, that will change things somewhat. 

Even Once The Divorce Is Done Pitt And Jolie Aren’t Done In Court 

Even if the divorce is finalized in the coming weeks or months, it won’t end the courtroom battles between the two stars. Pitt is suing Jolie, and being countersued by her company, over Jolie’s sale of her share of a winery the two owned when they were married. Jolie sold her share to a third party, which Pitt is now suing over, claiming the two had an agreement that neither could sell without the approval of the other. 

Even if that lawsuit drags on, it can likely still be handled with Jolie in New York so if the actress is looking to move, it could happen sooner than later.
