Friends had a lot of guest stars throughout its 10-season run, with some being very memorable and others not so much. Even in the final season, there were quite a few great performers, including Anna Faris. The Scary Movie star in four episodes, including the two-part series finale, but she still managed to make a mark in that short amount of time. At the same time though, Faris apparently felt weird about joining the series during its big farewell.

In Season 10, Faris recurred as Erica, a pregnant woman who ultimately chose Monica and Chandler to be her babies' adoptive parents. The fan-favorite actress recalled that experience during a segment for Variety, in which she tried to recall some lines she’s had over the course of her career. Faris' role on Friends was brought up, prompting memories of how emotional the set was amid production of those final installments. In the midst of the emotions, though, Faris found it awkward to engage in group hugs:

It’s understandable why Faris would feel that way. Joining an already-established show is one thing, but being involved during the final episodes of its 10-year run is something else. Obviously, in terms of Friends, the cast had a shared history and, naturally, they were emotional. Faris wasn't the only one who felt that way either. Paul Rudd, who recurred in the final two seasons as Phoebe’s boyfriend and eventual husband, Mike Hannigan, wondered why he was included in the series finale.

Despite the awkwardness about being included in sentimental moments with the cast, the former Mom actress has nothing but fond memories of filming Friends. She even reminisced about filming in front of a live studio audience, who were witnessing the end of a very special era:

I can only imagine what it was like to be in the audience for the final episodes, and I love that Faris got to be a part of it. On top of that, her character played such an important part in Monica and Chandler’s final arc, and it was quite sweet to see Erica welcome the twins that the parents would raise. Faris also previously talked about getting to work with the late Matthew Perry and, even then, she felt weird speaking about it due to not spending too much time with him.

All in all, though, I'd say the icing on the cake of Anna Faris' entire experience was the fact that she was still embraced by the cast. Honestly, I'd expect nothing less from the cast of Friends. On that note, I'm feeling the need to rewatch Faris' episodes, and fans can check them out now using an HBO Max subscription.

Even five years after the end of its eight-season run, CBS’ Mom remains a favorite among fans and remains accessible via streaming. Anna Faris and Allison Janney led the Napa, California-set sitcom, and the pair had excellent chemistry. Faris, however, ultimately left at the end of Season 7, and nearly quit acting after stepping away from her role as single mother Christy Plunkett. I’ve always wondered why she left the series, and someone finally asked her.

Apparently, after she initially left Mom, Faris released a statement with which she praised her collaborators and alluded to the prospect of new acting opportunities. However, she didn't dig into her exact reason for stepping away. While appearing on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Faris looked back at her time on the show and, while she appreciated the experience, she admitted that her schedule was taking up a lot of time. She also said:

I can understand how doing the same job for seven years straight can definitely be hard, especially if a person isn't used to it. Up to that point, Faris had mostly starred in movies throughout her entire career, with some small TV roles here and there. And, while the long-running sitcom provided her with job security, it's worth mentioning that making a multi-camera sitcom can be tedious. Even though Faris has no ill will towards that time of her life, it sounds like she has mixed feelings about it:

Faris’ stint on Mom marked her first, and so far only, lead role on a TV series. The show -- co-created by sitcom czar Chuck Lorre -- was an instant hit, and it follows the dysfunctional lives of mother/daughter duo Bonnie (Janney) and Christy. Speaking for myself, it was a surprise when it was announced that Faris would depart the show after Season 7, which (allegedly) sent the cast and crew into a frenzy before the show ultimately ended with Season 8.

For viewers, it can be strange to see an established show go on without one of its leads. After Faris departed, Janney spoke out how it felt to film without her, revealing how missed Faris and Christy were. Still, Janney -- who won two consecutive Emmys for her portrayal of Bonnie -- was also just happy that Faris was doing what she wanted to do, which is really all that matters.

As a fan, I'm curious as to whether Anna Faris will dig deeper into her rationale for leaving the series. That's a podcast conversation I'd certainly love to listen to. For now, though, I simply respect Faris for choosing to make such a big decision for her life and career. Here's hoping she balances life and work as she continues to navigate the industry. At the same time, fans can watch Mom with a Netflix subscription.

Anna Faris has been a celebrity for some time now and, as such, she’s seemingly experienced both the highs and lows of stardom. Right now, the fan-favorite actress is experiencing the box office success of the latest Scary Movie installment. Ahead of this moment, though, she’s also dealt with career droughts as well as a highly publicized divorce from Chris Pratt. Faris recently opened up about what it was like going through such a public split, and she didn’t hold back her thoughts about experiencing “scrutiny” and more.

Back in September 2017, Faris and Pratt formally announced their separation and, by December of that year, they formally filed for divorce. Up through the time in which the divorce was finalized in 2018, the two stars received a considerable amount of attention from the media. Faris recently reflected on that period in her life while speaking with Variety, noting how it impacted her emotionally. The House Bunny star also got real about trying to protect her peace while navigating the ins and outs of Tinseltown:

Faris and Pratt met for the first time in 2007, at which point the two were taking part in a table read for the dramedy film Take Me Home Tonight. Ultimately, the two actors became engaged in 2008 and eventually tied the knot in 2009 and welcomed a son, Jack, in 2012. During the relationship, Faris worked consistently, though Pratt notably emerged as a true movie star via his roles in films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. To that point, Faris previously talked about feeling “competitiveness” in the relationship as she also did in her first marriage to Ben Indra.

Although her divorce from Chris Pratt was apparently challenging for her, Faris also had some brighter elements in her life to lean on at that time. One particular career venture proved to be just the outlet she needed:

Of course, today Faris continues to connect with people through her work, and she’s doing that in a big way right now. She reprises her role as Cindy Campbell in Scary Movie, and the 2026 movie schedule entry made a big splash when it hit theaters early this month. So far, the film has already grossed over $100 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $30 million. Faris also has three other films – I, Object, Spa Weekend and Primetime – that are set to be released this year.

As far as her personal life goes, Anna Faris has also maintained a solid relationship with Chris Pratt, who’s since married Katherine Schwarzenegger. Faris previously discussed her hopes of creating a blended family dynamic with them, and the Mom star even congratulated Pratt and Schwarzenegger after their first child – daughter Lyla – was born in 2020. So, overall, while the divorce may not have been the easiest situation for Faris to navigate, it seems like she (and her ex) have found the light at the end of the tunnel.

The Wayans Brothers are officially back in Scary Movie business after being “stripped” of their franchise following the 2001 sequel. Scary Movie 6 hit the 2026 movie schedule last weekend, bringing back not just Marlon and Shawn Wayans, but Regina Hall and Anna Faris as well. It was well-received, too, taking the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office. This success came despite negative reviews, and Rotten Tomatoes shows just how much audiences disagreed with the critics.

The disparity between critics and moviegoers is apparent when you look at the Rotten Tomatoes scores — 24% on the Tomatometer vs. 68% on the Popcornmeter. The reviews pointed to outdated humor, tired weed references and the lampooning of several movies with “okay-ish” jokes and gags that fell “flat.” RT’s audience comments, however, show that the humor was a hit with much of the ticket-buying crowd, as they said:

• This is by far the hardest that I’ve laughed at a movie in a very long time. – Berto

That last comment is a big one, because you can tell from Scary Movie’s trailer that you shouldn’t go into this movie expecting to not feel personally attacked by one thing or another. Honestly, anyone familiar with the Wayans Brothers’ comedy should know that anyway.

In fact, being able to laugh at ourselves in the politically charged climate that we live in is exactly what some audience members liked most about Scary Movie. More reactions included:

The critics may have the platform to give their opinions, but moviegoers speak with their money, and they spoke loud and clear this weekend, giving Scary Movie the best three-day opening of any film in the franchise with $55 million.

This continued a trend of success for the horror movie genre after the low-budget YouTuber-helmed hits Backrooms and Obsession stole headlines from big studio releases like Star Wars’ The Mandalorian and Grogu and Masters of the Universe.

Will Scary Movie be able to maintain its audience in coming weeks? Will the positive word-of-mouth advertising attract new and repeat viewers? We won’t have to wait long to find out.

There’s been a bit of a resurgence in the spoof genre in recent years, with films like The Naked Gun and Fackham Hall, and with 13 years having passed since the last offering in the Scary Movie franchise, it seems like an appropriate time to bring the horror parody series back. Reviews are in for the Wayans Brothers’ Scary Movie 6, as it hits the 2026 movie schedule on June 5, and I'm shocked that critics' reaction to the new movie is that most of the jokes aren't funny.

The sixth installment of the Scary Movie series drops the number from its official title, much in the same way that Scream 5 was just called Scream. The movie brings back much of its cast from the first two movies, including Anna Faris as Cindy Campbell. Regina Hall returns as well, along with Marlon and Shawn Wayans and many others. Kim Newman of Empire rates the movie 2 out of 4 stars, writing in his review:

David Rooney of THR says the movies that Scary Movie is spoofing may be different, but the jokes are all the same — and many more of them fall flat than inspire laughs from the audience, according to Rooney. The critic concludes:

Witney Seibold of SlashFilm rates it 2.5 out of 10, admitting that there are some genuinely funny moments in Scary Movie 6, but the legacy sequel is otherwise a “puerile trash fire.” The movie aims to be offensive, Seibold writes, complaining about issues like gender identity rather than making any sort of statement about the subjects they’re lampooning. The critic says:

Eric Goldman of IGN acknowledges in his review of Scary Movie 6 that while the jokes miss more than they land, it’s nice to see the Wayans family back in the franchise — especially with OG stars like Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Goldman gives the movie a “Mediocre” 5 out of 10, writing:

For Alison Foreman of IndieWire, seeing the Wayans reclaim their franchise is reason enough to make it out for the upcoming horror movie, but the movie in some ways reads less like a parody of movie culture and more like a representation of what Hollywood executives think modern horror is. Foreman continues:

There are so many movies from the past 13 years that the Wayans Brothers could choose from to spoof, and along with a Weapons gag, Scary Movie parodies everything from The Substance to Get Out to Sinners and even KPop Demon Hunters. If you liked the early offerings in this franchise, don’t let any negative reviews stop you from seeing this one.

However, with a critics score of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, don’t go in expecting anything high-brow either. Scary Movie hits theaters Friday, June 5.

The last few years have been pretty wonderful for horror fans. We’ve seen a great deal of very successful “elevated” horror from the likes of Jordan Peele, Robert Eggers and more. The most recent example has been Zach Cregger’s Weapons, which has continued to win at the box office. It’s going to provide plenty of material when the next Scary Movie arrives next year.

Yes, if you weren’t aware, Scary Movie 6 has a greenlight and is set to release next year. What’s more, it was recently confirmed that franchise mainstay Anna Ferris is set to return in the new film. Putting the news and the recent horror success together, a fan on X has already gone viral for suggesting a scene for the film, and I am absolutely here for it. They said…

It’s a scene so incredibly obvious that now that it’s been said, it seems like it has to happen. Whether it’s Anna Faris or another character, somebody needs to do a “Weapons run” at some point in the film and then run into a pole, tree or even just a wall.

It’s exactly the sort of joke that we’d expect from Scary Movie. Over the course of five films that started in 2000 and ran until 2013, the franchise seemingly spoofed every horror movie ever made. Of course, when you do that, you eventually run out of material to spoof, and spoofs as a genre haven’t exactly been lucrative lately.

This made it something of a surprise when it was announced that Scary Movie 6 was happening and that the Wayans Brothers were back to write the film. Of course, in the years since the last entry in the series, we’ve seen a lot of great horror movies that will certainly be prime fodder for the film.

It can be assumed we’ll see elements from movies like Get Out, Hereditary and Nosferatu all get transformed into something a lot less scary and a lot more silly. We’ve also seen films like Scream get the legacy sequel treatment, and it’s hard not to believe that’s exactly why Scary Movie is coming back. One imagines that whatever semblance of a plot the film has, it will be of the “legacy sequel” variety.

We’ve also seen the beginning of what is hopefully something of a resurgence of the spoof genre. The recent Naked Gun movie was a breath of fresh air and will ideally be the first of many movies like it.

Get Out has a famous “running” scene of its own that may get the Scary Movie treatment. Although now I’m imagining the Get Out run and the Weapons run in some sort of race sequence. Seriously, this movie writes itself.

Even though it’s been 20 years since Friends ended, the series remains a major favorite among fans today and is considered one of the best sitcoms. With it also being one of the best series on Max, fans are discovering and rediscovering the NBC sitcom, especially following the sudden death of Matthew Perry last year. Throughout the 10-season run, there were a lot of guest appearances on Friends, including Anna Faris, who recurred in the final season. Now, she's looking back at her time on the series and working with Perry.

Faris joined Friends in Season 10 as Erica, a young pregnant woman in Ohio who picks Monica and Chandler to adopt her baby, even after some miscommunication. While she only appeared in four episodes, she made a big impact on the series since Monica and Chandler had struggled with fertility issues and were finally going to start a family. Along with Courteney Cox, most of Faris’ scenes were with Perry, and she recalled working with the late actor while speaking with People and how much of an honor it was:

It’s definitely a shame that she didn’t appear in more episodes, especially since Erica is one of the Friends side characters fans still love today. Faris is part of a long list of famous guest stars on the sitcom, and the role came to her after her breakout movies Scary Movie and The Hot Chick, so it gave fans an additional reason to watch and love her character.

Not only did she get to work with mostly Perry and Cox, but she also shared that the Chandler actor was the one who suggested her for the role of Erica, making it all the more special. So regardless of how long she was on Friends, it’s clear she was just as honored and grateful as ever to work on the series:

During her brief time on Friends, it’s clear Matthew Perry made an impact on Anna Faris just as her character did on the series.

She is not the only Friends guest star to share a lovely story about him following his passing either. Marlo Thomas, who played Rachel’s mom, recalled a sweet memory about Perry when he looked at her in a “generous way” and how appreciative he was of other actors. Tom Selleck, meanwhile, shared how the Chandler actor had to repeat a line for him to get it right while portraying Richard Burke.

Thanks to streaming, Max subscribers can always take a look back at their favorite Chandler Bing moments and Friends’ many guest stars, including Anna Faris. It’s nice that people will always have their own stories about Perry, proving time and time again that he was as special as they come.

Janice Litman-Goralnik

Oh. My. God! Chandler's on-off girlfriend Janice Litman-Goralnik (Maggie Wheeler) was nothing short of iconic, and despite all the cute moments Chandler and Monica blessed us with in Friends' later seasons, there is still a contingency of the fandom that thinks he and Janice should have been endgame. 

Carol Willick

Things weren't always easy for Ross (David Schwimmer) and his ex-wife Carol Willick (Jane Sibbett), as the series opened with them navigating not just their divorce, but their unexpected pregnancy and her new relationship. However, they continued to be there for each other when needed — Ross walking Carol down the aisle at her wedding, for instance — and we couldn't help but love her too.

Julie

The six Friends had a lot of girlfriends come and go over the years, but poor Julie (Lauren Tom) was simply a victim of bad timing. She came back into Ross' life just as Rachel was finally reciprocating his years-long crush on her. Julie was never anything but sweet and kind, but nobody could have stood in the way of Ross and Rachel finally getting together.

Richard Burke

Tom Selleck was one of Friends' best guest stars, playing Richard Burke, Monica's fan-favorite Season 2 boyfriend. Forget the fact that he was 21 years older and her dad's best friend. He still fit in just fine with Monica's close-knit friend group, even if Joey and Chandler did see him more as a father figure. Their breakup because Richard didn't want to have more children was truly heartbreaking.

Gunther

No one will ever forget Gunther, the Central Perk barista with hair brighter than the sun. James Michael Tyler stood mostly quietly behind the counter for an impressive 162 episodes, secretly pining for Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) the entire time.

Frank Jr.

Phoebe's half-brother Frank Jr. (Giovanni Ribisi) really seemed to prove which side of the family her wacky personality came from. Frank Jr. was hard to rein in, but he had so much love for his sister, and you can't help but smile at how enthusiastic he was to be having triplets with his wife Alice. Because he never had a dad around, and "now I always will, 'cause, you know, it'll be me!"  

Marcel The Monkey

It was certainly a unique choice of Friends to bring in a pet monkey for Ross. Marcel, who was actually a capuchin named Katie, was a hilarious companion to the newly divorced character in the first season. To this day can Friends fans even hear "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" without thinking of Marcel?

Ugly Naked Guy

It may be strange to love a character whose face we never saw, but Ugly Naked Guy provided quite a few comedic moments for the gang watching him from Monica's apartment.

Rhonda

Sherri Shepherd has said she loved guest starring on Friends as Rhonda, a museum employee who helped Matt LeBlanc's Joey (a new tour guide) navigate the lunchtime situation. Just as Joey was hurt that Ross chose to sit with the other scientists rather than him, we can all understand why Rhonda called out Peter, a fellow employee she'd known since grade school, for the same thing. After all, she shared her pudding with him. She gave him her Snack Pack!

Sandra Green

Marlo Thomas made a few appearances over the years as Rachel's mother Sandra Green, and she was at her best when she was marveling at the life her daughter had created. Sandra had never had to take care of herself, and she admired Rachel for being brave enough to not go through with a wedding to a man she didn't love.

Jack Gellar

Who was more lovable than Ross and Monica's dad Jack? The character, played by Elliott Gould, may have still shown a little favoritism toward Ross, but Jack clearly had a soft spot for his little Harmonica. Fans continue to love him for his musings on being buried at sea, selling ice on the Internet and the sun-dried tomato business. Don't tell me your heart didn't melt when he went to check on Monica (Courteney Cox) after her breakup with Richard.

Estelle Leonard

Estelle Leonard, played by a heavily made-up June Gable, was not the most talented of talent agents, as Joey struggled as an actor possibly more than necessary over the years. However, her exaggerated New York accent and chain-smoking proclivities made for consistent laughs in an unforgettable role.

David

It's hard to believe Hank Azaria appeared in only three episodes as David, the scientist who was forced to move to Minsk (which is not in Russia) so soon after he and Phoebe fell in love. I wouldn't have been upset if she'd ended up with him.

Mike Hannigan

It's hard to argue against Mike Hannigan though. Paul Rudd played a pretty significant role in Seasons 9 and 10, as his character eventually married Phoebe. Mike didn't always understand Phoebe's unconventional ways, but he always allowed her to be herself, even if that meant changing his name to Crap Bag to prove a point to Princess Consuela Banana-Hammock.

Mr. Heckles

Anybody who's ever had a noisy upstairs neighbor can likely relate to Mr. Heckles. Larry Hankin's character was a bizarre one, indeed, as he spent his sporadic appearances either telling Monica and co. to keep it down or insisting that he could have a cat/play the oboe/have birds, etc. According to "The One With the Flashback," we also have Mr. Heckles to thank for Joey and Chandler becoming roommates!

Susan Bunch

Susan Bunch gets a bad rap on Friends, and I honestly don't get it. We all know that Ross was kind of the worst, and nobody got the brunt of his pettiness more than the woman Carol left him for. While their interactions were often strained, Susan was as understanding as possible of Ross' perspective, but she never allowed herself to be pushed aside, especially when it came to Carol or their son Ben, and I love that. 

Eddie

Man alive! Who didn't love this dehydrating maniac? Adam Goldberg played Eddie, Chandler's roommate when Joey temporarily moved into his own place. Eddie didn't always have a strong grasp on reality, and there was really nothing creepier than finding out he liked to sneak into Chandler's room to watch him sleep, but Eddie sure was an amazing character who fans continue to love to this day.

Ursula Buffay

The character of Ursula Buffay originated on Mad About You, with Friends creating Phoebe as her identical twin to justify Lisa Kudrow's appearance on both NBC series. Ursula was the "evil twin" of sorts, just as flighty as Phoebe but with none of the warmth. She was still a heck of a lot of fun to watch.

Leonard Green

It was interesting to get to meet Rachel's dad Leonard Green (Ron Leibman), the man who spoiled his three daughters so shamelessly, but the best part about this character was how ruthless he could be, particularly toward Ross. "Nice hair. What'd you do, swim here?" Classic.

Nora Bing

Like many of the Friends characters, Chandler had a loving but complicated relationship with his mom Nora Bing (Morgan Fairchild), particularly because of her line of work writing erotic novels. But how fun was it for his friends to be able to meet the woman who wrote page 79 of Mistress B... well, never mind.

Jill Green

If there's one thing we learned about Rachel's sisters on Friends, it's that they're used to getting what they want. Reese Witherspoon was a joy to watch as Jill Green, who easily manipulated everyone around her, even dating Ross for no other reason than to prove to Rachel that she could. After all, the only thing she can't have is dairy!

Erica The Birth Mother

Erica (played by Anna Faris) wasn't the brightest crayon in the box, but she made the process of Monica and Chandler adopting her twins extremely easy for them, despite the fact that they lied to her about their identities during their first meeting.

Erika The Obsessed Fan

Brooke Shields went way over the top to play Erika, Joey's stalker who somehow didn't understand that his soap opera character Drake Ramoray didn't exist in the real world. Her hand-licking scene lives in infamy, and who didn't love watching her throw water in Joey's face after she saw him kissing another character on Days of Our Lives? 

Paul Stevens

Things could have gotten all kinds of weird when Rachel started dating Paul Stevens (Bruce Willis), the father of Ross' girlfriend Elizabeth. Oh, and they definitely did get weird, but one can't blame Paul for giving himself that mirror pep talk before he continued his romantic weekend with Rachel. Everybody needs a little reminder that they're a neat guy (and a love machine).

Parker

Alec Baldwin guest-starred as Phoebe's date Parker in Season 8, and how could you not love how excited he got about every little thing? The brake lights were "aglow with the light of a thousand fairies!" The Long Island Expressway was "a concrete miracle!" Parker, I just want to take a mental picture of you ... click!

Pete Becker

Who hasn't dreamed of being pursued by a multi-millionaire? Jon Favreau guest-starred in six episodes as Pete Becker, and I can't even be mad that he tried to woo Monica by leaving $20,000 tips and whisking her away to Rome for pizza on their first date. Too bad their relationship couldn't withstand Pete's dream of becoming the Ultimate Fighting Champion.

Amy Green

While Rachel's sister Jill was defined by her manipulative personality, Amy Green was the very definition of self-centered. Christina Applegate's character couldn't be bothered to learn anyone's name (even Rachel's daughter Emma), constantly mistook Ross for a guy who worked at the falafel stand and somehow still thought she would get custody of Emma if something happened to Ross and Rachel. Talk about a character you loved to hate!

Judy Gellar

Christina Pickles appeared 19 times in Friends' 10 seasons as Monica and Ross' mom Judy, and while the micro-aggressions she hurled at Monica were pretty brutal, it was downright hilarious to see what aspect of her daughter's life she would nit-pick next: The un-fluffed pillow? The "easy" lasagna she made for dinner? Still not having a boyfriend? It was a lot, but it was relatable to a lot of Friends viewers.

Mr. Treeger

Sure, Mr. Treeger made Rachel cry that one time, but he wasn't exactly wrong in calling her out for being spoiled. As far as building superintendents go Michael G. Hagerty's character was a pretty nice one, not evicting Monica from the apartment she was apparently living in illegally. He also had a great storyline where he learned to dance so he could impress a woman he liked at the Super Ball.

Alice Knight

If you can get past the age difference between Frank Jr. and his wife Alice Knight (Debra Jo Rupp), and the fact that he was her student (her BEST student, obviously), the love between them was so undeniable. In pretty much all of their appearances together, they couldn't keep their hands off of each other, and that's one of the things that made Alice such a great side character.

Charlie Wheeler

Ross and Joey each had a lot of girlfriends over the series' 10 seasons, and they both dated Aisha Tyler's Charlie Wheeler. One can certainly see how they'd both be attracted to her, as she was brilliant, beautiful and pretty funny too. Frankly it was also nice to see a Black character with a major storyline.

Kathy

It's a little surprising that Kathy is so beloved by Friends fans, given the fact that she ultimately cheated on both Joey and Chandler. But the Joey situation was just unfortunate, because he was dating other people too, and Paget Brewster's on-screen chemistry with Matthew Perry was simply electric. I join many other Friends fans in wishing she and Chandler had lasted longer ... and ended differently.

Friends may have aired its final episode decades ago, but you know what they say: I'll be there for you, and that includes all of the beloved side characters that we met along the way. Here’s some simple TV math: the longer a series airs, the less likely its original cast will remain intact, regardless of how beloved the show or actor is. The majority of popular series over the years have gone through at least one major exit, and it’s bad enough when changes are revealed early, and characters’ last episodes are planned out and logical. It's far worse, however, when actors suddenly exit projects without any on-screen closure.

Surprise departures can curb audiences' enjoyment of a show, whether from disrupted cast dynamics or shoddy storytelling. And depending on how controversial the exits are, a key departure can completely derail a show's success. So let’s take a look back at some of the most memorable instances when stars parted ways with projects without closing their characters' stories.

Anna Faris (Mom)

During Mom's hiatus following Season 7, co-star Anna Faris suddenly revealed she was leaving the show, which reportedly shocked the creative team as much as fans. Allison Janney & Co. went forward with the eighth season, occasionally referencing Faris’ character Christy, but it was canceled without any kind of conclusion for the character, though the creators made it clear they didn’t want to kill her off.

Chevy Chase (Community)

Community already suffered the exodus of creator Dan Harmon and more creatives in Season 4, and then Chevy Chase allegedly used a racial slur on the set, leading him to drop out of the NBC comedy through mutual agreement with network execs. His character Pierce appeared multiple times after his official exit, due to episodes airing out of order, as well as that hologram cameo in the Season 5 premiere, but the SNL vet never returned as a regular, and was unceremoniously killed off via dialogue two episodes after the cameo.

Danny Masterson (The Ranch)

That ‘70s Show vet Danny Masterson reteamed with Ashton Kutcher on Netflix’s sitcom The Ranch, but was fired in December 2017 after multiple assault allegations against him were publicized. Masterson later faced trial, was convicted and sentenced to prison in September 2023, and did not return as Rooster Bennett, who was written as missing and presumed dead via motorcycle accident.

Suzanne Somers (Three's Company)

Three’s Company's early seasons were bolstered by the popularity of Suzanne Somers’ Chrissy Snow, but network execs reportedly refused the actress’ salary increase requests, leading to a unique stalemate agreement. Somers made only contractually obligated appearances in Season 4 episodes' closing tag scenes, which she filmed separately from her co-stars. Somers was fired by the season’s end, with Chrissy said to be caring for her sick mom in Fresno.

Corey Hawkins (The Walking Dead)

Corey Hawkins joined The Walking Dead Season 6 as comic book fan-favorite Heath, but Straight Outta Compton's release that same year shot him to Hollywood’s stratosphere. In one of TWD’s most baffling moments, Heath disappeared in Season 7, and was never seen from again. Reportedly, Heath would have returned for the movies, but those plans have been shut down.

Emmy Rossum (Shameless)

The final two years of Shameless' 11-season run were without Emmy Rossum’s Fiona Gallagher. The actress announced her shocking exit in 2018, and Fiona’s final appearance came in the emotional Season 9 finale. Despite fans’ hopes, Rossum opted not to return for cameos in the remaining seasons, and the series finale wrapped without any major Fiona updates.

Mandy Patinkin (Criminal Minds)

Criminal Minds began its lengthy run with Mandy Patinkin’s Jason Gideon running the BAU, but that changed ahead of the third season when Patinkin left the show entirely over his disgust with the violent storylines. (He called joining the crime drama his “biggest public mistake” in 2012.) Gideon was replaced and killed off-screen seven seasons later, with Ben Savage guest-starring as young Gideon in flashbacks.

Columbus Short (Scandal)

Ahead of Scandal's Season 3 finale, co-star Columbus Short was arrested over a physical altercation at an L.A. restaurant, and eventually confessed he’d developed drinking and drug habits while dealing with a divorce and custody disputes. Short was fired from Scandal in April 2014, and his character Harrison Wright was revealed in Season 4 to have been killed off.

Gina Carano (The Mandalorian)

Former MMA badass Gina Carano landed the role of Star Wars merc Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, but lost the gig in February 2021. Following a series of controversial social media moves, Lucasfilm announced she would no longer be involved in the show. Cara Dune was not recast, and has not returned to the franchise since the Season 2 finale.

Valerie Harper (Valerie)

The Hogan Family began its existence as Valerie, starring the Emmy-winning Valerie Harper as its lead matriarch for two seasons. She was later fired after salary disputes and sued NBC and production company Lorimar. While her initial claims were dismissed, a judge ruled Harper was indeed wrongfully terminated, netting her a financial win. Her character suffered an offscreen death, leading to the series' name changes.

Robert Downey Jr. (Ally McBeal)

Following a string of 1990s scandals, Robert Downey Jr. landed the role of love interest Larry Paul in Season 4 of Fox’s hit dramedy Ally McBeal, which earned him a Golden Globe. But additional arrests in late 2000 and 2001 led creator David E. Kelley to cut ties with RDJ completely. The fifth season, which would have chronicled Ally and Larry’s post-wedding bliss, had to be completely rewritten.

Shannen Doherty (Charmed)

Though Charmed’s eldest sister Prue Halliwell was the trio's most powerful, the third season finale left Shannen Doherty’s character facing possible death. Though presumptions held that she’d return for Season 4, tensions and more issues surrounding Doherty and Alyssa Milano led to Doherty’s firing via phone call. As such, Prue’s wounds turned out to be fatal, but Doherty did not return for the funeral episode.

Clayne Crawford (Lethal Weapon)

Fox’s iteration of Lethal Weapon paired Rectify vet Clayne Crawford with Damon Wayans. But instead of buddy cop love, reports indicated strife and hostility building between the co-stars, along with complaints about Crawford's directorial work. His exit was reported on the day of the Season 2 finale, which ended on a cliffhanger for his character Riggs, who was unsurprisingly revealed to have succumbed to his wounds. Seann William Scott joined Season 3 as a replacement.

Grace Park (Hawaii Five-0)

After seven seasons portraying Kono Kalakaua for CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 reboot, Grace Park opted to vacate her role alongside Daniel Dae Kim after their attempts to secure pay equality with co-stars Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan were turned down by CBS Television Studios. Kono was revealed to have relocated to Carson City, Nevada, as part of a trafficking task force, with Danny sharing their break-up update in Season 9.

Thomas Gibson (Criminal Minds)

Various Criminal Minds stars exited the drama for different reasons, but Thomas Gibson’s case. stands out. Despite the show still being early into filming Season 12, ABC Studios and CBS Studios revealed the actor’s termination via a joint statement in August 2016, less than a week after Gibson was suspended over an on-set altercation with a writer-producer. A later episode revealed his character Aaron “Hotch” Hotchner entered Witness Protection after discovering serial killer Peter Lewis stalking his son Jack.

Roseanne Barr (Roseanne)

One of the '90s' biggest sitcoms returned to ABC in 2018, with Roseanne bringing comedian Roseanne Barr back as its matriarch. But that return only lasted for a single season, as Barr tweeted a message about former White House Advisor Valerie Jarrett that was considered racist, and two months after its Season 11 renewal, Roseanne was effectively canceled. The network relaunched without Barr as The Conners, which kicked off its run by killing off Roseanne Conner via drug overdose.

Charlie Sheen (Two And A Half Men)

Two and a Half Men thrived on the chemistry between Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer, but the show went into hiatus in 2011 due to Sheen’s then-latest rehab stint, at which point the actor began slamming CBS and Chuck Lorre in a variety of high-profile interviews. Season 8 was then shut down mid-production, with Sheen’s firing later capping things off. His public meltdowns continued capturing headlines as Ashton Kutcher helped fill the Charlie void, and unfortunately didn't make good on rumors of his series finale return.

Lisa Edelstein (House)

Across her years as Dr. Lisa Cuddy, House star Lisa Edelstein went from playing contentious boss to adoring lover. Upon Season 7’s end, she and two co-stars were asked to take salary cuts during contract negotiations, with Edelstein being the lone holdout. She announced her exit ahead of Season 8, and Cuddy was later revealed to have quit as Dean of Medicine, with Omar Epps’ Eric Foreman taking on the duties for the final season.

James Garner (Maverick)

For three seasons, James Garner portrayed Maverick's title character Bret Maverick, but the 1960 writers' strike helped bring that run to a sudden close. When Warner Bros. attempted to lay Garner off due to a lack of scripts, he fought back and successfully sued the studio for breach of contract. According to the actor, he personally turned down an offer to return with a raise, saying, “I want out,” and though Bret appeared in an airing-delayed Season 4 ep which was filmed far earlier, Garner did not return, with fill-in stars Roger Moore and Robert Colbert added later.

Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy)

Katherine Heigl took a temporary leave from Grey’s Anatomy in Season 6 to shoot a movie and spend time with her adopted daughter, which sparked her to request to be released from her contract 18 months early. Disputes have raged on over how her sudden exit was handled, considering Izzy never experienced an official “farewell” scene. Alex Karev’s final ep specifically noted that he and Izzy were back together and raising twins in Kansas. While Heigl notably reunited with former co-stars at the Emmys, giving fans hope that Izzy could return, she has yet to justify those hopes.

Jeff Garlin (The Goldbergs)

Nine months after The Goldbergs co-star George Segal died at 87, lead actor Jeff Garlin vacated the show following multiple HR investigations into allegations of misconduct. The departure was said to be a mutual agreement between the actor and the producers and network, and because it happened in the middle of filming Season 9, the producers used CGI, physical stand-ins, and archival audio to make it appear as if Murray was still around. The writers ditched that idea going into Season 10, though, and revealed Murray's off-camera death.

Freema Agyeman (New Amsterdam)

Freema Agyeman portrayed New Amsterdam's oncology chief Dr. Helen Sharpe for four seasons, and while many expected her back for the fifth and final season, the actress shockingly announced her exit amid the summer hiatus, cheekily pleading for fans to continue Sharpe’s story via fan-fiction. She went on to co-star in the series Dreamland, cementing Sharpe and Dr. Goodwin’s break-up, and though the character did appear on TV in a later Season 5 episode, it was without any overarching updates.

Hartley Sawyer (The Flash)

In 2017, actor Hartley Sawyer landed his stretchiest role yet as The Flash’s Ralph Dibny, a.k.a. Elongated Man. Three years later, in response to his comments about Black Lives Matter, social media users pulled up multiple derogatory and offensive tweets the actor posted between the years of 2009-2014. He publicly apologized for the posts, but a week after waves were made, Warner Bros. TV and The CW fired Sawyer from The Flash, which used an uncredited body double for Season 7’s “Mother” to write Ralph out alongside Sue Dearbon.

Jill Marie Jones (Girlfriends)

Jill Marie Jones crushed it as Girlfriends’ ego-driven Toni Childs for six seasons but was the only main cast holdout who exited the dramedy ahead of Season 7 over her contract expiring. Jones' exit was explained through Toni moving to New York City at the end of Season 6, but Jones spoke openly in 2007 about feeling that Toni’s story wasn’t over and that she'd be willing to return if the writers put something together. Alas, the show was canceled in 2008 before that could happen.

Lori Loughlin (Fuller House)

Lori Loughlin returned to her Full House role of Rebecca for the Netflix continuation series Fuller House, but her appearances ceased in Season 4 after she was fired by Netflix over her and her husband Mossimo Giannulli’s actions regarding the 2019 college admissions bribery scandal. Though the actress was later able to reprise her When Calls the Heart character, Aunt Becky didn't return at all for Season 5.

Kevin Spacey (House Of Cards)

Alongside Robin Wright, Kevin Spacey made streaming TV normal with Netflix’s House of Cards. In the weeks ahead of Season 6's production, Spacey faced widely publicized accusations from actor Anthony Rapp, was subsequently fired by Netflix and was removed from executive producer duties. His character Frank Underwood was revealed to have been poisoned and died ahead of the Season 6 premiere.

Leanna Creel (Saved By The Bell)

Leanna Creel’s Tori Scott remains one of pop culture's biggest curiosities, having slid into NBC’s Saved by the Bell for its final season during a run of episodes lacking Tiffani Thiessen’s Kelly and Elizabeth Berkley’s Jessie. The leather-clad character shook things up for Zack & Co. for just ten episodes, and was never heard from again.

Wayne Rogers (MASH)

Three years after joining CBS' MASH, actor Wayne Rogers grew discouraged by his character Trapper John not reaching his expectations, and unexpectedly opted to quit the hit series ahead of its fourth season. But while fellow exiting co-star McLean Stevenson was able to be written out of the Season 3 finale, Trapper John's absence had to be explained away in the Season 4 premiere without Rogers around.

Ruby Rose (Batwoman)

Batwoman’s first foray into live-action saw Ruby Rose wearing Kate Kane's cape and cowl, but she left the Arrowverse series shortly after the first season ended. Reports noted she was fired over on-set behavior, with Rose claiming the show’s taxing nature led her to suffer back surgery following an alleged on-set accident. Replaced as a lead by Javicia Leslie's Ryan Wilder, Kate later returned in a different physical form without Rose’s involvement.

Kate Jackson (Charlie's Angels)

O.G. Charlie’s Angels star Kate Jackson won viewers’ hearts for three years as Sabrina Duncan, which is when she followed former co-star Farrah Fawcett out the door. Jackson spoke warily of the writers’ scripts, and after being denied the opportunity to join Kramer vs. Kramer due to scheduling, she intentionally caused an on-set mess that led to her dismissal ahead of Season 4. Replaced by Shelley Hack’s Tiffany Wells, Sabrina was revealed to have left the agency to become a mother.

Jon Seda (Chicago P.D.)

Jon Seda’s Antonio Dawson jumped from Chicago Fire to P.D. to Justice and back again for seven years. Surprisingly, NBC and Wolf Entertainment chose not to renew Seda’s contract ahead of Chicago P.D.'s seventh season, and he was let go. Later episodes revealed the character fell back into pill addiction following the prior finale's cliffhanger, and he was checked into rehab, eventually moving to Puerto Rico after resigning from the force.

Selma Blair (Anger Management)

Charlie Sheen followed Two and a Half Men with the comedy Anger Management, co-starring Selma Blair for part of its run as his colleague and fling interest Dr. Kate Wales. Conflict between Blair and Sheen bled into the tabloids, and a reported ultimatum from Sheen led producers to fire Blair, with her character suddenly being explained away as having moved to India.

Moms always deserve more credit than they get, and that goes for the wonderful matriarchs who have graced our television screens over the years. Characters like Carol Brady and Clair Huxtable are names that easily come to mind when thinking about the best TV moms, but there are so many more that deserve to be mentioned.

Sometimes mothers make mistakes despite trying their best. Others show their love in more unconventional ways, and some just seem to always get outshined by other members of their family. For one reason or another, below are some fantastic TV moms who never got enough credit.

Ruth Fisher (Six Feet Under)

Ruth Fisher’s whole life changed when her husband was killed in a car accident in the Six Feet Under series premiere. Not only was she tasked with continuing to run her family’s funeral home business, and come to terms with her own guilt, loneliness and identity, she had to help guide her grown children through their own grief. Ruth (Frances Conroy) wasn’t perfect — no issue on the HBO drama was black-and-white — but there was no question that she had put her children’s needs first for her whole life. 

Beth Pearson (This Is Us) 

When your mother-in-law is the indomitable Rebecca Pearson, it’s pretty easy to get overshadowed as a mom, and that’s precisely why Beth Pearson (Susan Kelechi Watson) on This Is Us never got enough credit. Her husband Randall was definitely a good partner, but Beth was the real MVP of the parenting dynamic duo, often able to anticipate her family’s emotions and sniff out any scheming going on with their three daughters. She even became a mother figure to many more by opening her own dance studio. 

Sarah Braverman (Parenthood) 

Parenthood gave viewers plenty of different family dynamics to dissect, and Kristina Braverman was tough to beat as a mother, going so far as to open up a charter school for children with special needs. So it's no wonder that her sister-in-law, former wild child Sarah Braverman (Lauren Graham), was never given much credit. Sarah struggled to raise Amber and Drew as a single mother, and boy did they not make it easy on her. She may not have always had all the answers, but she loved her kids first, and in the end they figured it out together. 

Rainbow Johnson (black-ish) 

Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Johnson) on black-ish deserves all the flowers, serving as the model of a successful working mom. Rainbow juggled being a doctor and raising five children, whom she respected as individuals. She put their problems ahead of her own to make sure they had a better life than she did as a kid. 

Lorelai Gilmore (Gilmore Girls) 

Lorelai Gilmore’s daughter Rory could always count on her mom for a snappy joke or pop culture reference, but Lorelai (Lauren Graham) certainly didn’t have it easy. Her relationship with her own parents was strained after getting pregnant at just 16 years old, making it all the more impressive when she made a life for her and Rory in Stars Hollow. She struggled at times to be patient with her own daughter’s mistakes, but she wasn’t too proud to accept her parents’ help when it benefited Rory. 

Marge Simpson (The Simpsons) 

Would the Simpson family even survive without Marge? Easily the most underappreciated of the family of five, Marge never got any help from Homer over the decades, as she raised three extremely different and never-aging children. In fact, Homer was more of a fourth child in that equation, and still Marge loved her husband and her kids. I don’t think there’s a person in the world who could blame her for the occasional frustrated grunt. 

Michonne (The Walking Dead) 

Despite her own trauma of losing a child in the walker outbreak, The Walking Dead’s Michonne (Danai Gurira) adopted Carl and Judith as her own (before going on have her own child with Rick Grimes), and she never hesitated to put her own life at risk to save them. 

Penelope Alvarez (One Day at a Time) 

Despite being a war veteran struggling with her own PTSD and depression, Penelope Alvarez (Justina Machado) was always able to give her children the attention they needed on One Day at a Time. She made the time, even while working as a nurse and living with her traditional Cuban mother. 

Morticia Addams (The Addams Family) 

Morticia Addams (portrayed in the 1964 sitcom The Addams Family by Carolyn Jones) was the epitome of unconventional, but was there ever a TV mom who encouraged her children to be themselves more than her? Never bending to the expectations and societal norms of those around her, Morticia was always loyal to and protective of her family, if not a bit macabre. 

Jane Villanueva (Jane the Virgin) 

Talk about life taking you in unexpected directions! Gina Rodriguez’s Jane Villanueva on Jane the Virgin had her own matriarchs to thank for being able to figure things out when she got pregnant by accidental artificial insemination. Such grace in the most unique of situations. 

Claire Dunphy (Modern Family) 

Nobody said you had to have everything together in order to be a good mom. Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) of Modern Family often struggled with how to approach the myriad hurdles of her blended and extended family, but fans found her relatable, and she deserved a lot more credit than she got. 

Gemma Teller Morrow (Sons of Anarchy) 

The characters in the world of Sons of Anarchy all knew one thing: Don’t mess with Gemma Teller Morrow (Katey Sagal) or her family, including any of the members of SAMCRO. Gemma was willing to kill or die for her son Jax, and boy did she prove it.  

Laurel Park (The Summer I Turned Pretty) 

Often the less-fun mom in comparison to her BFF Susannah, Laurel Park (Jackie Chung) was undoubtedly more responsible of the two in the book-to-screen adaptation of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Even when grief drove her and Susannah’s kids to make some pretty bad decisions, she handled the teens with understanding and grace. 

Skyler White (Breaking Bad) 

Boy did people give Skyler White (Anna Gunn) grief during Breaking Bad’s run on AMC. Sure, she was complicit in some of Walter White’s money laundering, but it’s not like she was left with much of a choice. Always doing what she thought was best for her family, she was fiercely protective of her kids — even when that meant standing up to her husband when he was at his most dangerous. 

Peggy Bundy (Married… With Children) 

Peggy Bundy (Katey Sagal) had a lot of qualities you might not look for in a good TV mom on Married… with Children. She was lazy, obsessed with the television and didn’t exactly set the best example for the kids. She still deserves more credit than she gets, though, because she was unapologetically herself and nurturing in her own way. 

Roseanne Conner (Roseanne) 

Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr) wasn’t perfect on her self-titled sitcom, but what family is? Her and Dan’s struggles to make ends meet while still wanting more for their kids was what made her relatable to so many. Her blunt and brutal honesty was what made her so funny.  

Chilli Heeler (Bluey) 

Chilli, better known as “Mum” to the Bluey viewing audience, definitely doesn’t get as much credit in the fun department as Bluey and Bingo’s dad Bandit, but somebody’s got to remember to pack the goggles, towels and sunscreen for a day at the pool, right? Chilli takes care of a lot of the “boring” stuff, which apparently is not just a thing for human moms. 

Harriette Winslow (Family Matters)  

Harriette Winslow (played by Jo Marie Payton until the middle of the final season) may not get brought up in the “Best TV Moms” conversation all that often, but she definitely should. If for no other reason, she kept her patience with Family Matters fan favorite Steve Urkel a lot longer than many would have. 

Linda Belcher (Bob’s Burgers) 

Sometimes when it comes to moms and their eccentric families, it’s hard to understand how they fit in. That’s not the case with Linda Belcher on Bob’s Burgers, who may be the matriarch, but she’s as big a mess as any of them, and I mean that in the best way. Linda is wild and funny while still being incredibly loving and supportive. 

Jean Weir (Freaks and Geeks) 

Helping your children navigate their formative years is not an easy task, and Jean Weir (Becky Ann Baker) on Freaks and Geeks definitely had her work cut out for her with her polar-opposite kiddos Lindsay and Sam. While her efforts were hit-and-miss, she wanted to connect with them so badly, and you just had to appreciate her goofy, sometimes-overbearing personality. 

Rebecca Donaldson Katsopolis (Full House) 

Of course Rebecca Donaldson (aka “Aunt Becky”) would go on to have twins with “Uncle Jesse” Katsopolis, but Lori Loughlin’s character on Full House was earning mom points years before that, as she gave motherly advice to Michelle, Stephanie and especially DJ after their own mom’s passing. The importance of her role to them can’t be overstated. 

Jessica Huang (Fresh Off The Boat) 

Jessica Huang (Constance Wu) may be the queen to her kids’ pawns in the chess game of life, but the high expectations the Fresh Off the Boat matriarch set for her children just showed how much she believed in them. She was firm but devoted, and sometimes we forget those tough moms have just as much love to give. 

Carol Foster-Lambert (Step By Step) 

Anybody who successfully blends families the way the Fosters and Lamberts did on Step by Step deserves some major mom snaps, especially given the spectrum of personalities Carol Foster-Lambert’s children and stepchildren exhibited. There were growing pains, of course, but it couldn’t have worked without the endless love and support of Suzanne Somers’ character. 

Jane Chapman (Big Little Lies) 

Given the trauma that Jane Chapman endured on Big Little Lies, there’s no wondering why she’s slow to trust people, or why she’s so protective of her son Ziggy. Never as perky or interesting or seemingly perfect as the other moms around her, her strength to survive and provide for Ziggy shouldn’t go unheralded. 

Kitty Forman (That ‘70s Show) 

We all know that one mom who unofficially adopts all of her kids’ friends as her own, and on That ‘70s Show, it was Eric and Laurie’s mother Kitty Forman (Debra Jo Rupp). It speaks volumes that everybody always felt at home there, despite her husband Red’s eternally grouchy disposition. She may not get enough credit as a great TV mom, but she’s unrivaled in infectious laughter. 

Carmela Soprano (The Sopranos) 

All moms have a lot on their plates, and let's face it: Parenting is just plain hard. So Edie Falco's Carmela Soprano on The Sopranos probably deserves some extra credit for also being married to a mob boss. Even if she didn't deserve it, I'd give it to her anyway.

Annie Marks (Good Girls) 

Good Girls shows just how far moms will go when they’re desperate to provide for their children. Mae Whitman played young single mother Annie Marks, but despite Annie's dangerous lifestyle, she prioritized her child and was a beacon of support during an emotional coming out story. 

Christy Jolene Plunkett (Mom) 

A special shoutout to the moms who are figuring it out after not having a particularly good role model themselves. This was the case for Christy (Anna Faris) on Mom, who always did her best as she faced her own struggles with sobriety and the complex relationship with her mom Bonnie. 

Amy Sosa (Superstore) 

Amy Sosa’s kids may not have been the central focus of Superstore, but America Ferrera’s character gave a voice to many mothers out there through her storyline about having to return to work after 48 hours because the store didn’t offer maternity leave. 

Cindy Walsh (Beverly Hills, 90210) 

Good role models seemed to be severely lacking on Beverly Hills 90210, so that should have made Cindy Walsh (Carol Potter) stand out more as one of TV’s greatest moms. She kept Brandon and Brenda grounded, while providing support as needed to their friends. Cindy put her own pain aside, only rarely showing that she, too, had struggled with the move from Minnesota to the sunny West Coast. 

Samantha Stephens (Bewitched) 

It can’t be easy being a witch living in a non-magical world, but that’s the reality Elizabeth Montgomery’s Samantha Stephens was faced with on Bewitched. Both of her and Darrin’s children also had the nose-twitching powers, and while it’s debatable whether those abilities were best kept under wraps or not, it’s obvious that Samantha just wanted to keep her husband happy and do what was best for the kids. 

Sam Fox (Better Things) 

Loosely based on Pamela Adlon’s own life as a single mom of three daughters, Better Things’ Sam Fox was the perfect combination of protective but not overbearing. She was willing to lay down the law, but the lines of communication were always open for honest conversations about real — and sometimes tough — issues. 

Nora Walker (Brothers & Sisters) 

Nora Walker (Sally Field) isn't often mentioned in the same sentence as TV mom icons like June Cleaver or Clair Huxtable, but she should be. In the wake of her cheating husband's death, Nora didn't have just her own problems to deal with, but she took on those of her grown children as well. In addition to being graceful, honest and loving through all the ups and downs, Nora knew how to keep the wine flowing too.

This is really just a handful of TV moms who don't get enough credit, because if we're being honest, can we ever really show too much appreciation for the women who doled out life lessons from the television screen? I didn't think so. 

An actress who has kept TV and film audiences laughing since her breakout role in the Scary Movie franchise, Anna Faris is set to deliver what is potentially her sexiest role yet: the Garden of Eden resident Eve. The Mom vet took on the part for a high-profile Super Bowl ad sponsored by Avocados from Mexico, and as one might expect, it required her to be next to nude for filming purposes. Despite any prior apprehensions about disrobing for the top-dollar ad, Faris gained a newfound comfort in going all natural during the filming process. 

For the ad, which will air at a currently unknown point during Super Bowl LVII, Anna Faris is living it up in the Biblical garden in her birthday suit, with some carefully placed hair, leaves, and more keeping things as safe-for-work as can be. Speaking with People, the Chipmunks franchise vet talked about coming to terms with such a limited wardrobe for the avocado commercial, saying: 

By all means, that probably would have been a truly miserable experience for Anna Faris if donning a jelly-esque bra and mini-thong has been a true thorn in her paw and affected her acting skills. (Also, someone missed the mark by not finding a way to fill the bra with mashed avocado. Or wait, maybe I'm the one...) Thankfully, though, she was not only able to find peace with her state of in-the-buff-ness, but also found a certain form of comfort in it. Albeit in part due to the fake hair she had on. 

To that end, Faris joked that if she had access to the faux follicles on a regular basis, she might be more interested in disrobing on a regular basis. In her words:

It definitely helped Faris' comfort level to be around others on the set who were on the same fashion page as her, in that they were also "minimally dressed," as the actress put it. Plus, she was pumped to be crafting an ad for a product that she fully endorses and enjoys.

Not that getting mostly naked for TV was the only bit of naughtiness involved. Anna Faris also shared that she had to lie to her parents about what she was doing in order to maintain full secrecy ahead of filming. So in order to get them to babysit her kiddo with Chris Pratt, Faris led them to believe she was scripting a horror movie, and was handling a location shoot in Mexico City. For what it's worth, the avocado ad will likely be seen by way more people than most horror movies released in any given year.

I'm pretty sure Mom's Christy would approve, considering the character's past involving showing off her body. Pretty sure Christy would also be all about getting a Super Bowl commercial paycheck, too. And probably some free avocados.

Anna Faris’ departure from Mom shocked many fans as there was no forewarning. She eased the sting by explaining she was leaving for better opportunities. Despite there being no bad blood, losing the series lead was reportedly a nightmare for her former cast and crew. Her early exit was more painful because the CBS sitcom was canceled before she could return. Since leaving the show, Faris hasn’t spoken much about her exit. However, there might’ve been more to her quitting Mom as the Scary Movie alum opened up about nearly leaving her acting career after the show, and what brought her back to work.

The comedic actress kept her promise to do more projects as she currently stars in the comedy The Estate, which is playing in theaters. But starring in her first leading film role in four years almost didn’t happen. After being in Hollywood for two decades, Faris was ready to walk away from the fame and success following her seven-season tenure on the CBS sitcom Mom. The weekly sitcom grind had worn away the TV and film actress’ love for the craft. Upon quitting the hit series, she opened up to People about taking stock of her Hollywood success.  

It’s hard to imagine that Faris contemplated retiring from Hollywood at such a young age. Of course, she wouldn’t be the first to leave behind the film and TV sets for a quieter existence (i.e., fellow actress Cameron Diaz before unretiring for a new movie). I'd assume working and auditioning constantly and living on sets for several months would make anyone reassess their decades-long career. At least, she reviewed her finances before making such a life-changing decision.

The Mom star was tired of "feeling competitive, feeling comparative" following her breakthrough role as Cindy Campbell in Scary Movie. The problem even filtered over to her romantic relationships, including her ex-husband Chris Pratt. So, leaving the show without another job lined up was different for the 45-year-old actress after hopping from project to project for two decades straight. In her words:

So, Faris needed the break from the Hollywood grind. It seemed like she was more preoccupied with the next thing than taking in the fruits of her labor, especially since she starred in over 30 film and TV projects, I'd think it left her burnt out. The actress enjoyed her time off, and it was well deserved. She was relieved from the Hollywood pressure for the first time in her career. Thankfully, the Overboard star didn’t retire but decided to reassess her acting career after receiving The Estate script.

Maybe this means viewers will get more movies and TV series from the comedic actress. The break appeared to work for her life as she spoke kindly about her relationship with Pratt and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger. While Anna Faris isn’t tied to any new TV series, there are upcoming TV premieres to check out for the remainder of 2022.

Anna Faris and Chris Pratt were married from 2009-2017 and share a son, Jack. After their marriage ended, Pratt married Katherine Schwarzenegger, and the two share two children together. While the end of a marriage can be difficult for all parties, Faris and Pratt have stated they stay committed to raising their child together as a united front. Recently Faris expressed that her relationship with both Pratt and Schwarzenegger has grown stronger over the years, and hopes for a blended family. 

The Overboard actress recently spoke to People Magazine, and revealed she has a great rapport with her ex-husband and his wife. Time clearly has helped the family grow closer, and seem to look out for each other. She said:

I’m glad these two exes remain on good terms and care for each other. As for spending holidays together, Faris revealed she is very interested in spending that kind of family time with Pratt, even if it wasn’t possible this year. The Mom alum went on to say:

Time heals all wounds, and it seems to be bringing this family closer together. Faris has also found love herself, in cinematographer Michael Barrett, who she married in 2021. She frequently chats about her life on her advice podcast, Unqualified, and reveals all sorts of lessons she’s learned from love and loss. Having a support system is a positive for everyone, and I’m glad she was able to develop one in Pratt and Schwarzenegger.

Pratt and Faris both have continued to have incredibly successful acting careers after they split. Pratt has starred in a number of action films and led the Jurassic World franchise from 2015-2022. He will be reprising his role as Starlord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is set for release in 2023. He is also expected to return for future MCU projects. In addition to her podcast, Faris ended her successful run on the CBS sitcom, Mom, in 2020. She now stars in a new comedy film, The Estate, alongside celebrated actress Toni Collette.

Over the past few years, there’s been a ton of conversation about how people are treated within the entertainment industry. This discourse came as a result of the #MeToo movement, and the various allegations made against powerful men in the film world like Harvey Weinstein. Comedian/actress Anna Faris unfortunately has her own story, recalling when late filmmaker Ivan Retiman screamed at her on set, while also claiming that he slapped her butt.

Ivan Reitman was an acclaimed filmmaker known for working on beloved comedies like Ghostbusters, Animal House, and Kindergarten Cop. Actress and podcaster Anna Faris collaborated with him on My Super Ex-Girlfriend, and recently shared on her podcast Unqualified that she had a hard time working with him. While in conversation with her guest Lena Dunham, Faris revealed that she got screamed at by Reitman on the first day of her movie, specifically in a fight sequence opposite Kill Bill icon Uma Thurman. As she put it,

According to Anna Faris, he received the ire of Ivan Reitman that day because she arrived 20 minutes late to set. But that wasn’t because she was being a diva or running late, a bottle of wig glue was spilled on her and her costume in the trailer. And as such, she had to get cleaned up before showing up to film her first My Super Ex-Girlfriend scene.

Anna Faris’ comments come from her recent episode of Unqualified, where she’d heard debating whether or not she should even share her Ivan Reitman story and speak ill of the dead. In the end she decides to share her truth, while also confirming that he was the director who once slapped her butt on set in front of the cast and crew. She kept it brief, saying:

Some of the hardcore fans of Anna Faris might remember that the Scary Movie actress previously described being groped on a movie set back in 2017. This was as the #MeToo movement was truly changing conversations, and encouraging various professionals to share their own experience. Without naming Ivan Reitman at the time, she shared her experience from the movie’s set, saying:

While this incident occurred around 15 years ago, clearly it’s a memory that Anna Faris still carries. One can only imagine how complicated her feelings about it became after Ivan Reitman passed away back in February of this year. Meanwhile, the filmmaker’s legacy has continued on with the release of Ghostsbusters: Afterlife and its planned sequel.

Chris Pratt has been unabashed in his affection for his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger. Over the past few months, he’s penned posts about their work with the upcoming Olympics, his love for his wife (even with her annoying habits), and a lovely birthday tribute. However, one post went viral and led to backlash after he commented about his daughter with Katherine and people online took it as a shot at his kid, Jack, with Anna Faris. His mother-in-law reached out after the backlash to share her own thoughts. 

To get into why Maria Shriver might have felt the need to support Chris Pratt, you need to know a few things. First, Pratt’s been taking flack for being the “worst Chris” among the handsome Hollywood Chrises during the pandemic. The Internet has also roasted the actor for landing a bunch of voice roles, including one that turned out to be a hoax. In addition, Chris Pratt shared this post featuring himself and his wife, to whom he has been married since 2019. 

A lot of fans, in the comments of the Instagram post and elsewhere, were not particularly kind about Pratt mentioning how Katherine Schwarzenegger had birthed their “gorgeous healthy daughter.” Many of those individuals mentioned how the actor’s son with Anna Faris dealt with some health challenges as a young tyke and spent time in the NICU. Faris had also previously mentioned several surgeries the former couple’s son has had during his childhood. The former couple's divorce was finalized in 2018.

But Maria Shriver asked Chris Pratt not to take it to heart, telling the actor in the comments to “rise above the noise. “  

Maria Shriver isn’t the only member of the Schwarzenegger clan to reach out to Chris Pratt during this extended period. In fact, Patrick Schwarzenegger also called the backlash “crazy,” noting he feels like Twitter is a “junkyard” with people having a “let’s get mad” mentality. Another portion of what Patrick’s mother had to say to her son-in-law can also be seen, below (edited for punctuation). 

It’s not just family members who have commented on this topic, as the likes of Mark Ruffalo and James Gunn have spoken out in his defense as well.  Chris Pratt has come close to addressing this controversy when he was a part of the AGBO fantasy football league with a bunch of other MCU stars and just so happened to win the whole shebang. In that case he had bragging rights and talked a little trash about who the “best Chris” was. Some have also speculated an Instagram Stories post about “feeling crappy” and going into the woods to work it out was related to the online blowback. 

Despite the occasional Internet drama, Pratt’s career is flourishing. Along with all the aforementioned voice work in the coming year, he has Jurassic World: Dominion and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming up. Oh yeah, and some work in a little movie called Thor: Love and Thunder. 

In addition, Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger are expected to add another little one into the fold in 2022. 

In an acting career that spans more than two decades, Anna Faris has perfected the art of slapstick, wide-eyed, and dark humor. Her various characters – from Scary Movie to The House Bunny to her more recent turn on the CBS sitcom Mom – all share a knack for saying the worst things at the worst times. It appears that life is imitating art, too, because the actress just blurted out a confirmation of those secret wedding rumors in the best way possible.

Anna Faris had been dating cinematographer Michael Barrett (who has worked on everything from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang to Zookeeper to Night Hunter) since 2019. In February of 2020, she confirmed that they were engaged. But over a year and a half later, with no further details, rumors were churning that they must have gotten married in secret. Now, thanks in large part to Faris herself realizing mid-sentence on her Unqualified podcast that the cat wasn't quite out of the bag yet – well, it's out now. She confirmed to Top Chef judge Gail Simmons that Barrett is indeed her husband, saying:

Her secret marriage to Michael Barrett marks the second big change in recent times for Anna Faris. In 2020, she shockingly announced that she was leaving her Emmy-winning sitcom Mom after seven seasons in one of the lead roles. The decision was thought to be a disaster for her co-workers on the show, as the premise was based around Faris and her fictional mom’s up and down relationship. They made do in final season by explaining the absence of Faris’s character Christy was due to the fact that she was away at law school.

The announcement of Anna Faris’ recent elopement also brings to mind her history with ex-husband Chris Pratt, who she had also eloped with back in 2009. They would later divorce in 2018, but the actress still has a penchant to be just as blunt and honest about their relationship. A few months ago, she even shared that her previous marriages to actors (Ben Indra and then Pratt) led to a level of “competitiveness” in their similar work. She has also stated that she and Pratt wanted to protect the “imagery” of themselves in the aftermath of their divorce.

After their divorce, Chris Pratt got married again only a year later to Katherine Schwarzenegger. The new couple just recently had their first baby girl late last year. But Pratt and Faris still share 8-year-old son Jack together, who apparently was busy helping Pratt fight aliens on the set of The Tomorrow War.

As can be seen, there are a lot of moving parts and people when it comes to notorious Hollywood couples. But nothing beats revealing an A-list celebrity secret quite like Anna Faris does.

Mom has come to an end after eight seasons on CBS, and the final episode was an emotional endeavor that included an emotional speech from Allison Janney's Bonnie that surely tugged at the heartstrings of many fans. What the finale didn't include that certainly would have brought some emotional outpouring was the return of Christy, but Anna Faris remained absent. The finale didn't even deliver an update on Christy at Georgetown, but fortunately, showrunner Gemma Baker has opened up about what's happening with Christy beyond the series finale that didn't feature her.

Anna Faris' surprise departure from Mom between Season 7 and Season 8 was explained away by saying that Christy went to Georgetown for law school, off-screen and on a full scholarship. Christy had gotten a few mentions here and there since, but any hopes for a surprise appearance in the finale were dashed. The good news? According to showrunner Gemma Baker speaking to Deadline, Christy is doing fine in her own way:

No fan is probably surprised that Georgetown would present some struggles for Christy, as both the workload and the new surroundings had to be tough on her after spending so much time with the same group and her mom. Still, a happy and healthy relationship isn't something that Mom always had for her, and moving to Georgetown didn't mean cutting all ties with the people she left behind. Fans just didn't get to see her.

And according to Gemma Baker, fans were never likely to see Anna Faris back as Christy for the series finale. The showrunner shared if there were discussions about a return from Christy and weighed in on any loose ends that weren't quite tied off by the final episode:

So, it wasn't a matter of a plan to bring Christy back that fell through, but the Mom team sticking with the surprise decision that Anna Faris made ahead of Season 8. Of course, she wasn't the only absence from the finale, with characters including Roscoe and Violet nowhere to be seen. Still, in an era of off-screen pandemic production challenges where some shows weren't even able to come back at all, Mom delivering the emotional and impactful finale that it did is impressive.

Now that Mom has come to an end, fans can only look ahead to the future, and the good news is that the summer TV lineup is packed with some solid options. Then again, if you're in the mood for a Mom blast from the past when Christy was still in the mix, you can find the first seven seasons streaming on Hulu now.

Chris Pratt and Anna Faris used to be one of the most beloved celebrity couples in Hollywood. The pair met on 2007’s Take Me Home Tonight and seemed a match in comedy star heaven as they continued to work together in projects like Movie 43 and What’s Your Number?, before welcoming their son Jack Pratt. It came to a shock to fans when the couple announced their split in 2017, and apparently was a surprise to even their closest friends and family.

Faris recently spoke on the difficulties of divorce as a Hollywood couple, sharing how the end of the relationship felt more sudden then it actually was at first:

The 44-year-old actress also spoke to not having a tight-knit group of women friends to bounce off what she was going through during the marriage, perhaps leading to her own ignorance of the problems the relationship faced.

The conversation occurred on her popular podcast Anna Faris Is Unqualified while speaking to The OC and Hart of Dixie actress Rachel Bilson about heartbreak. Faris and Bilson are longtime friends who share a similar experience, in that they both had relationships and kids with their famous co-stars whom they are no longer with today.

Rachel Bilson dated Star Wars’ Anakin Skywalker, Hayden Christensen, for ten years as well (albeit it was more on and off), and had their daughter Briar Rose in 2014 before they split up in 2017. While discussing their experiences with breakups, the actresses spoke about the importance of support systems whether you’re in or outside a relationship, along with how “tunnel vision” one can be when there are problems you cannot see. Faris said this:

Prior to marrying and divorcing Chris Pratt, Anna Faris was married to actor Ben Indra at a time when she was finding her early fame with Scary Movie and Just Friends. While she felt more transparent in that situation, it sounds like there was more pressure surrounding keeping it together with Chris Pratt with their Hollywood fame and child. Ultimately, they are now happier apart, each finding new romances and co-parenting Jack together.

Chris Pratt has since married Arnold Schwarzenegger’s daughter Katherine and recently had a daughter with her, Lyla. Anna Faris is engaged to cinematographer Michael Barrett and reportedly lives very close by Pratt based on their divorce agreement to maintain balance for their son. It’s great to hear the actress open up about her relationship with the Jurassic World star as the exes find new happiness with different partners.

Though Anna Faris may have exited Mom in an untimely manner ahead of Season 8, but the CBS sitcom's creative team have still found offbeat ways to [work her character Christy into storylines]((Which easily inspires questions about why nobody ever noticed that billboad before, but ), even if it's just through one-and-done references. In the most recent episode, "Tiny Dancer and an Impromptu Picnic," Allison Janney's Bonnie stumbled across the less-mentioned stripper chapter from Christy's past, which allowed for a fun and silly appearance from Better Call Saul and Nobody star Bob Odenkirk.

William Fichtner's Adam made a huge sacrifice in the early part of the episode, choosing to opt out of Bonnie's very tempting sexy picnic for the express purposes of ruining her day. Though not out of pure malice, at least. Rather, he wanted to give her a heads up that a massive image of Christy's not-exactly-covered-up body was being used on a promotional billboard for the strip club Mr. Naughties. To be expected, Bonnie wanted nothing more than to get that giant ad taken down, despite the fact that it had already drawing in horny customers for 20+ years. Or perhaps because of that.

After having some trouble getting in touch with any management figures at Mr. Naughties, Bonnie made a personal trip down there, which is where she met Bob Odenkirk's Hank, the current building manager who shared that he used to be a DJ at the club back when Christy was working there. It was quite the unexpected cameo from Odenkirk, whose vengeance-fueled action flick Nobody has been a box office winner, although he was playing the kind of sleazebag that he's often portrayed in his career. Hank is like what Jimmy McGill might have become if Rhea Seehorn's Kim wasn't there as a saving grace.

For the all too brief scene, Mom's set decorators and prop-masters did a splendid job short-handing the kind of person that Bob Odenkirk's Hank was. He was smoking while eating what looked like an egg dinner at his desk – mmm, strip club eggs – and had a bottle of Pepto Bismol directly in front of him on the trash-filled desk. Not to mention a chrome skull at arm's length. Plus, he's clearly a smart dude, based on his suggestion to use an Elton John classic as Christy's song on stage.

Turns out Hank is also smart/shrewd enough to recognize when something is working, and he knows that Christy's NSFW billboard – which is never actually shown to viewers in its full glory – has been drawing in customers for a long time. And you can tell how easily Hank is able to compartmentalize "business" issues from "personal" issues by the way he kept the billboard up all this time despite being keenly aware that Christy was not cut out for the strip club life. In his words:

Hell, Hank instinctively thought it likely that Christy might have been dead, which is another sign of just how highly he values Mr. Naughties' employees at any point during his career there. Thankfully, Anna Faris' character is on a much more promising trajectory than Bob Odenkirk's Hank, and Bonnie & the Ladies took it upon themselves to make sure that the Mr. Naughties billboard didn't any a negative impact on Christy's Georgetown education. Namely, they all climbed up and painted over it, though audiences sadly didn't get to see Hank's fury over that legitimately criminal development.

In the end, one has to wonder how in the hell that billboard was up for more than two decades without Bonnie or anyone else in her inner circle having seen it. It seems like even Christy herself would have been aware of it, if not from seeing it in person, then from friends and/or strangers bringing it up. Though I suppose someone very well could have mentioned it to her during her drinking days and she might not have remembered. Now we can all sit back an wallow in paranoia that our half-naked bodies are on billboards somewhere out there in the world.

Fans shouldn't expect Bob Odenkirk's Hank to get a spinoff like Breaking Bad's Saul Goodman did, but everyone should expect for Mom to deliver its final six episodes on Thursday nights on CBS at 9:00 p.m. ET.

Celebrity couples have enthralled the general public for as long as people have been famous. And while being a public figure comes with plenty of advantages, it can be a double-edged sword when you're in a romantic relationship with another celeb. Both actresses have made headlines due to their respective relationships, so there was definitely an understanding that came during their conversation. This is especially true when Faris broached the subject of her previous marriages.

While the Mom actress didn't go into detail about how competitiveness affected her marriages to Chris Pratt and Ben Indra, but they do seem like very different dynamics. For instance, Chris Pratt went from a TV start to one of Hollywood's top leading men thanks to his roles in Jurassic World, The Lego Movie, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Unfortunately, that run will be ending, as CBS has announced the show has been cancelled and will conclude with its current season. With this, Janney has shared her reaction to the cancellation via social media.

Allison Janney has been on a roll for the past few years, and much of that success has been due to her role as Bonnie Plunkett on Mom. Before Season 8 premiered, fans of the series learned that series co-lead Anna Faris wouldn’t be returning. The news was not only a shock for fans but for the cast and crew who reportedly didn’t know of Faris’ plans beforehand.

In light of her sudden departure, the producers decided to send Faris’ character, Christy, off to law school rather than kill her character off. Janney expressed her feelings on Faris’s shocking exit and what she misses about working with her former co-star. She even opened up about doing the show without her television daughter. Janney and Faris’ palpable mother-daughter dynamic and on-screen chemistry was a key reason for the show’s success. Needless to say, Faris’ departure left a void in the show.

Despite Anna Faris’ exit, Allison Janney and the others were able to move on. The series had evolved from focusing on just Bonnie and Christy’s relationship to becoming an ensemble comedy with actors such as Jamie Pressley and Kristen Johnson joining in. It’s been 15 years since Just Friends. Time has been kind to the comedy, as it has since become a holiday classic and an endearingly remembered as an early hit for Hollywood’s most treasured comedy stars, Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris. Upon rewatch, one of the most viscerally memorable parts of the film is Faris’ Samantha James, a quite irritating, yet lovable, doe-eyed pop star who sings all about how “forgiveness is more than saying sorry.”

In celebration of the film’s milestone, CinemaBlend had the chance to speak with Just Friends’ writer Adam 'Tex' Davis and director Roger Kumble (Cruel Intentions) all about it. One major subject of conversation we delved into is Anna Faris’ Samantha James, who became such a popular character that there was once talk to continue her story after Just Friends. As Davis put it:

To this day, Samantha James is one of Anna Faris’ most iconic and hilarious characters, and according to Just Friends’ screenwriter he was ready to get the ball rolling on a movie of her very own. That is before he tuned into Sasha Baron Cohen’s 2009 movie Brüno. Cohen’s wild follow-up to the original Borat (before Borat Subsequent Moviefilm made waves this year) was about a blacklisted celebrity who goes to the United States to launch a celebrity interview show. It’s not hard to imagine Davis dreaming up a similar scenario for Samantha James after some kind of public media snafu, since she’s obviously chaotic. But, when the writer saw Brüno he decided to scrap his own ideas.

The ironic part of the whole thing is in Brüno, Sasha Baron Cohen gets to sing a song with Bono called “Dove of Peace,” and in Just Friends, Samantha James discloses to Ryan Reynolds’ Chris Brander while they are on a plane in the beginning that she wanted to stop in Ireland to find out where U2 lives. She suggests that Bono sing backup on “Forgiveness.” None of this happens, because of course the plane has to make an emergency landing in New Jersey, where Reynolds’ character grew up. They have to then spend the week with his family, where he bumps into Amy Smart’s Jamie Palamino, Chris’ childhood friend and crush.

While Reynolds and Smart as the leads were no brainers, director Roger Kumble talked about the process of finding their Samantha James:

Just Friends was a moderate hit when it hit theaters on Thanksgiving weekend in 2005, competing against giants like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Walk the Line. When the movie was released, there wasn’t a sense of what it would become later as the years passed by. In Kumble’s words:

Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Season 8 premiere of Mom.

During Mom's extended hiatus ahead of Season 8, star Anna Faris revealed her decision to exit the show. The announcement was pretty unexpected and surprising, considering Faris’ long history playing Christy Plunkett. During the Season 8 premiere, Christy’s absence was quickly explained in a pretty safe way, and Mom showrunner Gemma Baker explained that the option to kill the character off the character was never “an option” for the writers.

Anna Faris confirmed her departure from the CBS sitcom in September, revealing that she wanted to pursue other opportunities outside of Mom. Losing one of the show’s two co-leads obviously put the series in a bit of a rough spot as the writers brainstormed how Christy would be written off the show? The answer, according to the Season 8 premiere, was to have Christy receive a scholarship to attend Georgetown Law School in Washington, D.C. Whew! That could’ve been handled a lot differently, considering how other TV shows tend to handle absent characters. Here’s what Gemma Baker told EW about the decision to avoid giving Christy a more depressing send-off:

I’m on board with how the writers handled Christy’s storyline. Death would have been far too convenient a way to sweep things under the rug, and I’m sure viewers wouldn’t have enjoyed for Christy to have died offscreen anyway. Christy earning her way into law school makes a lot more sense after seven years of build-up and recovery, and now that hard work is finally getting some payoff.

Plus, a full scholarship to law school just goes to show that Mom was thoughtful when it came to Christy’s fate, and avoided something more generic or a fate the character wouldn't agree with . Bonnie already cried her eyes out after dropping Christy off at the airport in the Season 8 premiere, but at least they were (in some part) tears of joy and not sadness.

While Anna Faris’ exit was sad, Gemma Baker says that Mom has become more of an ensemble show over the course of its seven seasons and that is why she and the writers never really panicked after learning that Faris was leaving. As such,, viewers should probably expect Adam, Tammy, Jill and the rest of the characters to take center stage now that Christy is no longer around. While everyone's mileage may vary, that doesn’t sound like a bad way to go in Season 8, all things considered.

Now that most TV shows have resumed filming with restrictions and safety measures in place, viewers can expect several series — Grey’s Anatomy, This is Us, The Good Doctor, and more — to tackle storylines revolving around the ongoing pandemic. However, the CBS sitcom Mom won’t be following the same path, as series co-creator Gemma Baker confirmed the Allison Janney-starring series won’t be incorporating a COVID arc in Season 8.

While in the midst of extra-long production hiatuses, multiple showrunners came to the conclusion that ignoring the ongoing pandemic would be irresponsible and somewhat unrealistic. This is especially true in the case of medical dramas, which often include storylines that are reflective of real life. On the other hand, Gemma Baker decided that it was in Mom’s best interests to leave any and all COVID storylines out altogether. Why? Here’s what she told Give Me My Remote:

I think it will probably end up being the right decision as well, since it wouldn’t make sense for every show to tackle a COVID-19 storyline. Can you imagine what sci-fi and fantasy shows would look like if they made the attempt? Or animated shows? In the case of Mom, Gemma Baker’s reasoning is based on both the escapism factor and the fact that Mom's narratives have existed independently from real-world events. Now, viewers will be able to watch at least one show where the pandemic isn’t on everyone’s minds in the way it might be in real life.

Television and movie productions have been erratic for months now due to COVID-19, which has changed the way casts and crews are able to go about filming and structuring scenes. Safety measures, restrictions, and consistent testing for COVID have also been implemented on just about every set. One might think that the behind-the-scenes changes would have altered the way Mom is handling its Season 8 storylines, but Gemma Baker says otherwise. In her words:

That’s a relief! For anyone worried that the actors’ onscreen interactions would be wildly different due to COVID restrictions, take comfort. Considering all of the precautions being taken, Gemma Baker’s words are probably pretty soothing for Mom fans everywhere.

That said, there is one major onscreen change that the CBS sitcom will be dealing with in Season 8, and that’s Christy’s unexpected absence. Over the extended hiatus, Anna Faris made the decision to exit Mom after seven seasons, which was rather shocking and sent the series into uncharted territory for Season 8. However, while Faris will be missed, the show had to go on despite her abrupt departure, and will see Allison Janney's Bonnie growing closer with husband Adam, among other things.

For the first time since Mom started up as a Chuck Lorre co-creation back in 2013, filming for Season 8 went into full swing without Anna Faris co-starring opposite Allison Janney. Faris made the shocking announcement in September that she was vacating the show as a way to take her career in a new direction with different projects. Fans will no doubt miss the actress and her character Christy when Season 8 kicks off this month, and they certainly won't be the only ones.

In the wake of Anna Faris' announcement, which frustrated crew members, Allison Janney mostly kept mom...er...mum about everything, sharing only a few words about starting Season 8's production for a behind-the-scenes video that was released as filming began. Now, though, the Emmy-winning actress opened up a bit and revealed what she'll miss the most about Faris being around, telling Entertainment Tonight:

For Allison Janney, it sounds like one of the key losses tied to Anna Faris leaving is Bonnie and Christy's in-person relationship, and that's totally understandable both from an actor perspective and a fan perspective. Despite being showcased on a half-hour CBS sitcom, the mother-daughter pairing has never been played just for laughs, and it's one of the most unique and inspirational familial relationships on TV. As Janney says, their characters will still continue to grow and evolve, only with Christy's evolution being told to audiences, as opposed to being shown.

After co-starring with someone for 20+ episodes a year for seven seasons, one person's absence is almost definitely going to take a toll on the other one in the immediate wake. But even though Allison Janney will be missing Bonnie's up-and-down relationship with Christy, she can take comfort knowing that the writers are finding ways to keep her busy. For one, she and William Fichtner's Adam will grow closer, and get inspired by their own lovey-dovey-ness to offer romantic advice to others in their friend circle. I can only imagine how well that will go over.

Everyone would probably agree that the summer and fall TV seasons have been anything but stable and predictable in 2020, given just about every high-profile series faced a variety of setbacks, delays and production changes. Beyond all that, arguably the most shocking news to hit primetime was Anna Faris' quick and seemingly sudden AF decision to bow out of renewing her contract for more Mom, which happened a month or so before Season 8 was set to start filming. With that season premiere coming in November, fans now have a better idea of what to expect from Christy's absence.

Without any signs of Christy returning in the near or far future, it sounds like Bonnie will specifically be dealing with the absence of her daughter when Season 8 kicks off. (I mean, it would be weird for the premiere to be a standard installment, only to go heavy on addressing Christy being gone in the third episode.) Here's how co-creator Gemma Baker explained it to TVLine:

It sounds like Allison Janney's Bonnie will have Christy on her mind a lot as the season goes on, which obviously makes sense for any mother in that kind of situation. But it could be particularly hard for Bonnie, considering the entire series has largely focused on her and Christy building the kind of strong relationship that wasn't capable of happening earlier in their lives. Thankfully, though, it doesn't sound like the showrunners are interested in taking Bonnie to dark emotional places that could potentially spark a relapse.

Instead, Bonnie seems to be aligning herself with all things happy and romantic. Her marriage with William Fichtner's Adam seems to be going smoothly, to the point where they're attempting to play couples counseling with others, which I cannot imagine will go all that smoothly. Gemma Baker did reveal that Jaime Pressly's Jill and Will Sasso's Andy are experiencing relationship problems in the early days of Season 8, with Jill wanting to move things forward, while Andy might not be so open to the concept. However, it wasn't made clear whether or not they will be the couple that Bonnie aims to help out.

With all of that said, viewers should not need to prepare themselves for anything too dark when it comes to Christy not being around anymore. Gemma Baker spoke quite optimistically about what's happening with Anna Faris' character off-screen.

By and large, Mom sounds as if it will keep doing what it does well without going overboard with making changes simply because a major cast member won't be around anymore. Will that be enough to keep fans around without Anna Faris? We'll have to wait and see.

There are still a number of renewed shows that do not appear on this list, however, as they have yet to receive premiere dates. Blue Bloods, Bull, The Equalizer, Evil, FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, Magnum P.I., SEAL Team, MacGyver and The Unicorn all fall into this category.

All of the shows on this roster experienced some form of delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Mom is still the top story that everyone’s been buzzing about. Anna Faris explained that she wanted to leave the show in order to pursue new opportunities, wishing the cast and crew well as she departed.

However, this move reportedly caught the crew by surprise. One insider even went as far as to refer to the news as “a nightmare” for the crew:

CBS was actually the first network to start filming again, with soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful leading the way. Now, with CBS’ Mom starting back up, Allison Janney has provided us with a look at the set, and it appears the show will be entering a “whole new territory.”

In a recent Twitter post, the 7-time Primetime Emmy winner shared a video from the set of Mom on her first day back. Janney and the crew all seemed excited to begin work on the show’s eighth season, and the actress declared that the COVID-19 protocols had created new territory for them. It goes without saying that the global health crisis has had a massive impact on TV productions, as plenty of measures are now being put in place to keep cast and crew members safe. Some have had to resort to “unconventional” methods to keep people safe. CBS’ The Bold and the Beautiful is even using latex mannequins for actors to perform kissing scenes.

Still, it looks like Allison Janney and the crew at Mom are taking things in stride. Regardless of the situation, they all just seem to be happy to be reunited and working together again. And based on the video, it definitely looks like CBS has taken some solid steps in instituting safety conditions.

Of course, not everyone will be returning for Mom’s new season. Ahead of Season 8, Anna Faris, who served as the co-lead alongside Janney, announced that she would not be returning to the hit comedy. Faris cited a desire to “pursue new opportunities” as her reason for exiting the show, though she said she will be “watching” and “rooting for” her TV family.

Although Anna Faris seemed to have left the show on relatively good terms, her exit reportedly sent shockwaves that are currently being felt by the cast and crew. A source close to the show described Faris’ decision as “sudden and unwelcome” and said that it “left the entire network scrambling.” While it has been reported that Faris’ character, Christy, will not be recast, it is still unclear as to how the producers plan to handle her character’s absence in Season 8.

With COVID-19 protocols and a sudden cast departure, it can certainly be said that Mom is entering uncharted territory. It’ll be interesting to see how production progresses and to find out what’s in store for Christy Plunkett. But above all, let’s just hope that the cast and crew remain safe as they attempt to give us more comedic antics from the Plunkett family.

Celebrity couples have enthralled the public for as long as there have been stars. Fans love to see talented and notable figures together, especially when a family is formed. The flip side of this is that splits and divorces also become public. Actors Chris Pratt and Anna Faris have continued to co-parent as the Guardians of the Galaxy star remarried and had a baby. But it turns out that they actually still owned property together until very recently.

Chris Pratt and Anna Faris announced their split back in 2017, with the divorce being finalized in October of 2018. This news come to us from TMZ, and might be surprising considering how much time has passed since Anna Faris and Chris Pratt's marriage came to a close. While the divorce was finalized nearly two years ago, the family home unfortunately remained on the market. And while the former couple was reportedly hoping to make $5 million, they did end up making a profit.

Chris Pratt and Anna Faris reportedly bought the gorgeous Hollywood Hills home for $3.3 million in 2014. So while the house might have sat on the market for longer than they'd intended, the pair of actors are no doubt thrilled that the transaction is over. And as such, they should presumably have one less fiscal thread connecting them in the future.

In the years since their split, both Chris Pratt and Anna Faris have both moved forward with new acting projects and romantic connections. The Guardians fo the Galaxy actor recently welcomed a baby girl with wife Katherine Schwarzenegger. Meanwhile, Faris is engaged to cinematographer Michael Barrett. And as expected, both actors have continued to work steadily over the years.

It was recently revealed that Anna Faris is departing her role in the CBS sitcom Mom and would not be returning for Season 8. As for Chris Pratt, he's currently across the pond filming Jurassic World: Dominion, which resumed filming after being shut down for months. He's also expected to reprise his MCU role as Star-Lord in both Guardians 3 and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Everyone at Mom is still dealing with the shockwaves over one half of its starring duo departing the popular Chuck Lorre sitcom. Allison Janney and Anna Faris have starred as Mom’s mother and daughter duo Bonnie and Christy, respectively, since the beginning. But that's not happening for much longer, and a source told People that no one at Mom is “happy” about it, adding:

Mom will undoubtedly need to make some unexpected adjustments due to Anna Faris’ exit. That said, the show will go on, as opposed to how The Big Bang Theory team responded to star Jim Parsons' decision to leave the high-rated sitcom, which opted to conclude everything.

Mom does not sound ready to make that big a leap despite Anna Faris’ prominent role in the show. The “nightmare” described by the source behind-the-scenes is tied to Faris allegedly not sharing her future plans with anyone involved with the creative team. In a statement, Faris said that her departure would allow her to “pursue new opportunities.”

For his part, Mom’s co-creator Chuck Lorre is familiar with losing a popular co-lead for one of his sitcoms, which could potentially help resolve the “nightmare” at hand. While The Big Bang Theory opted to stop after Jim Parsons chose to leave, Lorre’s Two and a Half Men kept going after Charlie Sheen’s highly publicized exit from the show. That exit was under completely different circumstances, of course.

Two and a Half Men moved forward by introducing Ashton Kutcher’s new character, Walden to take the place of Charlie Sheen, and the CBS sitcom lasted for three more seasons after the change-up. Could Mom go the same way? Stay tuned and take heart, since it is also not the first time that there has been drama behind-the-scenes at Mom.

Ahead of Season 7, there were fears that Mom may not continue as contract negotiations between Anna Faris and Allison Janney grew protracted. Before their re-negotiations, Faris and Janney were reportedly pulling in $200,000 per episode. Fast forward to now, as Season 8 is gearing up to start production, and Faris has bid it all farewell.

Based on what Anna Faris has said regarding her departure from Mom, it was apparently not specifically about money. Instead, she indicated her desire to pursue her creative freedom and explore new projects. A year after The Big Bang Theory has ended, Jim Parsons has shed further light on why he decided to leave it, so Faris may eventually do the same.

The long-running Chuck Lorre CBS sitcom has been anchored by Anna Faris and Allison Janney since its premiere in 2013 and through the more than 150 episodes that have aired so far, but Faris is officially leaving. She has explained her reasons why.

Anna Faris explained why she is leaving Mom (via THR), saying:

Anna Faris apparently isn't leaving because of any bad blood, but to pursue new opportunities. She didn't detail what kind of new opportunities that she intends to pursue, although she has been hosting the Unqualified podcast since 2015. The loss of Faris as Christy on Mom will fundamentally change the show, especially since the show reportedly won't recast the character, and her absence will be addressed when Mom returns. Allison Janney is presumably still on board as Christy's mom.

According to Anna Faris, she intends to keep on watching Mom even if she's not starring on it. Hopefully fond memories of her time on set will result in the occasional guest appearance for however much longer Mom runs without her, assuming Mom doesn't address Christy's absence by killing her off in another Mom tragedy. Christy was still pursuing law school at the end of Season 7; perhaps her career or education could simply explain why Bonnie is suddenly without Christy.

Interestingly, Anna Faris' departure comes in the middle of Mom's two-season renewal following Season 6, which was an order usually reserved for mega CBS sitcom hits like The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon. Season 6 could have been the end, as Faris' and Allison Janney's contracts expired ahead of Season 7. Negotiations seemingly worked out, and both actresses reportedly signed on for both Season 7 and Season 8 with a pay increase.

When Anna Faris informed CBS and the Mom team of her decision to depart isn't clear at the moment, but the show is still on summer hiatus and no premiere date has been set, which could mean that there will be plenty of time to plan how to do justice to Christy's absence, even if Faris isn't around. Production on Season 8 reportedly begins on September 14. The latest any season of Mom has premiered over the first seven years is November; CBS is already hoping to bring NCIS and other major shows back by November. Could Mom be one of them?

Anna Faris leaves behind a strong ensemble surrounding Allison Janney, so it should be interesting to see how the show works without Christy and whether it will last into a Season 9. Warner Bros. TV, which produces Mom, released a statement revealing that Faris was "the first and only choice" to play Christy and they are "so proud of the stories" they were able to tell during her time on the show, wishing her the best and thanking her.

The Jurassic World actor officially announced the birth of his newborn daughter Lyla Maria Schwarzenegger Pratt on Monday after he and his family were spotted at a Santa Monica hospital over the weekend. Lyla’s birth is exciting news for the Pratts and Schwarzeneggers just over a year after the A-list leading man tied the knot with Katherine Schwarzenegger last summer. And yes, Pratt's ex-wife, Anna Faris, is reportedly pretty excited too.

The Scary Movie comedy actress split up with Chris Pratt three years ago, but the pair are still parents to their 7-year-old son Jack and remain on good terms. In light of Chris Pratt welcoming his first baby girl, Anna Faris reportedly “congratulated him and sent a gift,” per E! Online. The source detailed that Faris is happy for her son to be a big brother and remains supportive of her ex-husband’s life. How sweet!

Most people who decide to go into creative fields have a tough time making a living at it, especially when they first start out. The same tends to be true for those who want to take a shot at making acting their career of choice, seeing as how, even now, opportunities for that business aren't evenly dispersed across the country and can have a pretty daunting entry process even if you do happen to live in someplace where the jobs are plentiful. Everyone has to get their start somehow, and Anna Faris recently recalled how broke she was right before landing her starring role in Scary Movie.

While Anna Faris has now long been a respected comedy actress, with several films under her belt and a long-running stint on the hit sitcom Mom on her resume, she struggled before nabbing her part as Cindy in 2000s megahit comedy / horror spoof, Scary Movie. This is the twentieth anniversary of the movie, and Faris recently recounted how she got her first movie role to Variety. As you might expect, it wasn't easy:

Man, the price of getting into the business, right? It's a very good thing that Anna Faris at least had enough friends in the area so that she had a place to stay and people to get rides from for her various auditions, otherwise it sounds like her pre-Scary Movie vetting may have ended in so much stress that she couldn't have delivered the kind of performances that ended up getting her the gig.

Obviously, her effort and time spent living off of the kindness of friends was well worth it. Scary Movie went on to make $278 million worldwide, on a budget of only about $19 million. Along with leading to four sequels (with the most recent being released in 2013), the film also got Anna Faris and her career off to a major start.

The Edmonds, Washington native went from having a few small roles in short films, TV movies or movies which history has forgotten, to roles in films like The Hot Chick, Lost in Translation, Brokeback Mountain, Waiting...,The House Bunny, Observe and Report, What's Your Number, Keanu, and Overboard, along with reprising her Scary Movie role in three of the sequels. And, along with seven seasons (and counting) on Mom, Faris has also spent time on Entourage, Friends and King of The Hill.

While it was a bit of a tough start for Anna Faris, it's clear that Scary Movie came around at the right time for her, and helped her get established, which is a good thing for all of us.

While Anna Faris didn't make an official comment about the engagement news, she was found commenting on Chris Pratt's Instagram post. As it was reported by the Instagram account Comments By Celebs, fittingly enough, she extended her congratulations to the newly engaged couple by saying:

CBS is currently home to the most-watched comedies on TV, but will be saying goodbye to the top-rated The Big Bang Theory when Season 12 is complete. Unfortunately, it looks like a similar scenario may be playing out with fellow hit Mom, which is currently embroiled in contract negotiations for stars Anna Faris and the Emmy queen Allison Janney.

Mom is currently on winter hiatus for its sixth season, and as it goes with many broadcast TV shows, both Anna Faris and Allison Janney had originally signed deals for six years. Now that those contracts' expirations are impending, the race is on to get the details squared away, with CBS execs reportedly wanting at least one more season of the issues-hinged sitcom. Alas, the network will likely have to pay a pretty penny or two in order to make that happen.

CBS is said to have reached out to Anna Faris and Allison Janney in the past month or so, in an attempt to suss out the contract situation ahead of time. The discussions have reportedly gone back and forth over price points, but according to Deadline, no end to the talks is in sight. It appears Faris and Janney are seeking more significant salary increases than the offers that CBS is making. No one involved with the situation is publicly commenting on the discussions.

It's reported that both Anna Faris and Allison Janney are making less than $200,000 an episode. While that's a fine payday overall, the two women's salaries are far smaller than those of CBS' premiere sitcom, The Big Bang Theory. That show had its own set of potentially show-ending contract disputes as well, first when getting the core cast members bigger paydays, and then again when later additions Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch sought pay parity ahead of Season 11.

Mom may only be in its sixth season, as compared to its more popular network brethren, but the show has proven itself consistent both in quality and in audience viewership. Also created by Chuck Lorre, Mom is currently the #3 TV comedy out there, both in terms of its average viewership and its average 18-49 demo ratings. It finished last year in the same spot, as well, just behind Big Bang and its spinoff Young Sheldon.

Since The Big Bang Theory is ending this year, Mom is primed to take over the second-place spot among all TV comedies. Losing that gigantic lead-in may take a toll, of course, but it's likely that Anna Faris and Allison Janney would rise above whatever tentative dips may happen. Such is the power of Mom's narrative and characters that the two women seem as if they can conquer anything.

Though it's easy to visualize Mom's contract negotiations working out perfectly to allow Season 7 an unencumbered development process, things could very well fall flat. The sitcom is already beyond 100 episodes, so there's less of a need to reach that syndication hallmark. Plus, CBS has been plagued by controversies of late, with Les Moonves' ousting and severance stipulations making the biggest headlines. His situation was far from the only one, though.

The network has also dealt with misconduct issues for multiple shows. From firing 60 Minutes producer Jeff Fager to firing NCIS: New Orleans showrunner Brad Kern to secretly paying out Eliza Dushku over alleged Bull issues, CBS is a network partially in flux behind the scenes. So perhaps once things get a little calmer in the near future, the Mom conversations can get figured out in a way that keeps Christy and Bonnie in primetime for years to come.

Ever since they announced their divorce plans a little over a year ago, Anna Faris and Chris Pratt have tried to keep their private lives away from the public eye as much as they can. Of course, due to their fame and celebrity, that is a difficult task. The topic has come up numerous times in multiple different settings, but they have respectfully kept the discussion between the parties involved. While admitting that it is a hard subject, they seem to respect one another, and raising their child, Jack Pratt (6) together. But now that the divorce is finalized, they have come to a few agreements.

According to TMZ, Anna Faris and Chris Pratt are officially separated, but they won't be far from one another. After meeting with a private judge on Wednesday, the former celebrity couple decided to live no further than five miles apart from each other -- at least, for the next five years. This court agreement is in the best interest of their son, Jack Pratt. Faris and Pratt want to live near Jack until he is at least finished with sixth grade. They are hoping to have a close relationship with their son by the time he's 12. While Pratt is super busy as a film star, he seemingly wants to be a good parent.

Furthermore, should Anna Faris or Chris Pratt want to relocate or move beyond the agreed five-mile distance, they need to have the written consent of the other parent no later than three months in advance of the move. And if they plan to be out of the country with Jack Pratt, Chris Pratt and Anna Faris need to let the other parent know at least 30 days in advance. When it comes to taking Jack Pratt out of the state, each parent expects to have a fairly "reasonable" advance notice, therein by letting the other parent know about the travel plans of their son -- even if they're no longer a romantic couple.

As far as legalities go, these requests are fairly mundane. But they suggest that Anna Faris and Chris Pratt want to remain firmly committed parents, despite the swift change in their lives. They're hoping to raise their child as best they can -- despite the divorce settlements coming into play right now. It's never easy to raise a child, especially when divorce is involved. And most especially when the divorcing parents are extremely famous film/TV stars. But they are trying to be responsible and level-headed about the whole matter, and it's understandable that they want their child to be the main focus.

And that tradition was found last week on Halloween, as Chris Pratt and Anna Faris were reportedly seen together with their child doing some trick-or-treating rounds. So, we are glad to know things are going well for the A-list one-time couple -- even as the divorce plans have been officially firmed up.

When the actress posted a pantless picture of herself, the Instagram photo became the source of speculation from nosy social media users, who criticized the comedic actress of being "too thin." In response to their negative comments, Faris deleted the picture altogether, and it's clear that she doesn't want to deal with anyone made inappropriate comments about her physical appearance. The Instagram picture was sent on Tuesday, as it was reported by E! News. It was a "pre-show" photo, according to the caption since deleted. It's believed to be back stage for The Talk, which she recently appeared in. The scrutinized online photo was taken by Michael Sherman, the podcast assistant for Unqualified, Anna Faris's popular advice podcast. It found the actress in a nervous state, hunched over a trash can with no pants on. As she admits, she did eventually put some pants on once the photo was sent online, but it didn't stay up on Instagram for long. This is the caption that Anna Faris wrote to accompany the photo, trying to explain what is happening in the frantic photo before the photo was taken down.

The comical photo was reportedly only online for 15 minutes before the actress took it down after comments were directed her way claiming that she looked "so unhealthy" and that she needed to "eat." Whatever reason inspired these Instagram users to write these criticisms on the photo, its only made the situation more viral. Many take umbrage with the hurtful comments, and the negativity directed towards Anna Faris before she was set to appear on the daytime talk show. Suffice to say, it wasn't long before Faris took the photo down, knowing that these rude retorts would only get worse before they would get any better. She hasn't posted again on the social media website, though it's unclear if that's because of this photo controversy or not.

Hopefully, if Anna Faris decides to post on Instagram again anytime soon, her experience on the site is a lot better than it was when she posted this particular photo. Such comments are hard to deal with, and it's clear that Anna Faris didn't want to deal with them any longer. As for what inspired these commenters to butt in and offer their own two cents about Faris' figure is a mystery that's left unclear. But this is the Internet, after all. A lot of people don't need a reason to do anything. Meanwhile, as an actress, Anna Faris can currently be seen on the newest season of Mom, airing on CBS.

While Anna Faris has been active in both comedy and drama projects for decades, there are a few roles that stand out as truly iconic. Chief among them is air headed protagonist Shelley in the 2008 comedy The House Bunny. In the movie, Farris played a playboy bunny who was kicked out of The Mansion, and forced to make her way out in the real world. It's a project that is constantly quoted and has played non-stop on syndication, and yesterday The House Bunny turned a decade old. Time sure does fly. As a tribute, Farris posted on social media about her time as Shelley, saying:

10 years later, and it looks like Anna Faris is still not over the costuming, hair, and locations used in The House Bunny. The movie was filmed at the height of the popular reality TV show The Girls Next Door, which followed late Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and his three girlfriends. So The House Bunny naturally had to use the real location, and even included Hugh and the trio of reality personalities for brief roles. The Playboy Mansion has seen plenty of scantily clad ladies over the decades, so Faris thought it was ridiculous that was attempting to compete alongside Playmates. Although she did look delightfully ridiculous playing the title character in The House Bunny.

The House Bunny is definitely one of Anna Faris' most iconic movie roles, and no doubt helped her get various projects in the decade since, including CBS' acclaimed sitcom Mom. The actress had to get in super shape for the role, as Shelley was almost never seen covering her midriff or cleavage throughout the movie's 97 minute runtime.

Anna Faris wasn't the only House Bunny cast member to post about the movie's anniversary. Two Broke Girls actress Kat Dennings also posted, including an alternate title and poster for the film.

While the cast looks great, I'm not sure that audience would have responded quite as well to a movie called I Know What Boys Like. While a great song lyric, it sounds similar to What Women Want, a movie which is getting a gender swapped version this year. This title could have been a backup plan, in case they couldn't get the rights to the Playboy Bunny name. Although Hugh Hefner's involvement in the film likely nipped that in the bud.

In addition to Kat Dennings, Scorpion actress Katherine McPhee also posted about the House Bunny's anniversary. Who could have known so many of the film's cast would land CBS shows?

While not a still or poster from The House Bunny, the above image shows some of the cast attending the MTV movie awards. Although noticeably lacking some of the stars, it's clear that Katherine McPhee, Anna Faris, and the rest of the Zetas look back on the comedy fondly.

With The House Bunny turning ten years old, there will no doubt be endless questions about a possible sequel or reboot. Considering nostalgia is ruling he world of TV and film, no property is off limits to return. And since so many of The House Bunny's supporting cast have become bigger stars in the decade since its released, they might be abel to draw an audience.

Despite what the reputation may suggest, "remakes" are not the worst thing in the world. Sure, there is something to the argument about intellectual bankruptcy -- rehashing old ideas instead of gambling on new ones, but generalizations are foolish. Cinema history is filled with remakes that are better than the original, and with each new one that's made, there's no reason to not expect that any new one might be able to accomplish the same feat. The key is raison d'etre: establishing a legitimate reason for the film to exist.

To its credit, this is something that director Rob Greenberg's Overboard possesses. Rather than being a carbon copy, it borrows the conceit from Garry Marshall's original, and gender-swaps the two lead roles, having Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez play the Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn parts respectively. It's an interesting approach, and much like the 1987 film, it gets good mileage from the likability of its stars -- but it also can't get past some of the inherent issues that come part and parcel with the concept. Not only is the alternate title Gaslighting: The Movie still very much applicable, but the new Overboard also just feels dated and fails to possess any kind of freshness 31 years later.

Co-scripted by Rob Greenberg and Bob Fisher, Overboard centers on Anna Faris as Kate Sullivan, a single mother of three daughters (Alyvia Alyn Lind, Hannah Nordberg, Payton Lepinski) who works cleaning carpets and delivering pizzas all while studying to become a nurse. She is struggling just to keep her head above water, and it's at this particularly terrible time that she meets Leonardo Montenegro (Eugenio Derbez), a rich, egotistical prick living off the money from his father's business. Kate is hired to clean the carpets of his yacht, but it's an experience that goes horribly. Not only does he act endlessly sleazy, but he fires her and dumps her equipment in the ocean when she refuses to act like one of his servants. As bad as things are for Kate, Leonardo has made them even worse.

This is when karma kicks in. A storm causes Leonardo to fall off his boat at night, and when he washes up on the shore he has no idea who he is. Because his sister (Cecilia Suárez) is attempting a corporate takeover while their father is dying, Leonardo is left with nobody to identify him, so Kate activates her revenge mission. With a series of hoop-jumping lies, she successfully convinces him that he is her husband, and sets it up so that he can go out and work to provide for the family while she stays at home and studies for her upcoming exam.

The movie does have the occasional clever/funny line (including a fun little shout-out to the original), but what really keeps Overboard going is just the charm of Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez. To her credit, Faris seems to be having a lot of fun in the performance, and it is successfully magnetic. Likewise, Derbez not only does a great job playing an obnoxious asshole, but he does a nice job leaning into the character's arc as he's forced to gain some humility. To that end, it's also worth noting that the two have solid chemistry together, and they play off each other well both before and after his accident.

The big problem is that the film fails to address what is classically the biggest problem with Overboard as a story. As obnoxious as Leonardo may be, and as mature as he may become, the whole premise of the ruse is morally grotesque, and it's not only in the back of the mind of every viewer, but it winds up having serious implications on how you ultimately view the progression of the story, the characters, and their choices. It's getting too far into spoilers to be fully discussed, but it's hard to feel good about any kind of happy ending when the extent of the psychological con isn't fully addressed. And no, the gender swap aspect doesn't do anything to soften this issue that plagued the original comedy.

Strangely, though, it also very much contributes to how dated the whole affair feels. Overboard isn't in the category of Porky's or Revenge of the Nerds when it comes to 1980s comedies that are cringe-worthy by today's moral standards, but it is borderline, and it lends the remake a strange regressive quality (if you were to edit out all of the technology, it would probably be indistinguishable from a feature of the era). One could make the argument that it adds a certain throwback charm, and to its credit the film surprisingly leans into Hispanic cultural influence, but it's still hard to recommend.

I'll throw Overboard a bone with some credit for at least trying to put a twist on the original... but you wish that it perhaps twisted a little bit more. The film definitely isn't the disaster that it could have been, however, it's also entirely forgettable.
