Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast member Anthony Head sadly died this past week at the age of 72 due to pneumonia, and many are feeling the loss. Various fans of the supernatural drama series have taken to social media to extend their condolences and pay tribute to head. At the same time, Sarah Michelle Gellar has paid tribute alongside others like David Boreanaz and Charisma Carpenter. Now, James Marsters and Alyson Hannigan, known for playing Spike and Willow, respectively, have spoken out and shared some touching sentiments.

Even today, James Marsters is well known for his performance as brooding vampire Spike, who initially started as one of Buffy’s best villains before becoming an ally. Considering Marsters’ own continued affection for the show and his co-stars, I’m not surprised by him honoring Anthony Head with a sweet Instagram post. Marsters shared a humorous photo of himself and Head along with a caption that began with the admission that there’s now a “hole in the world” due to his former co-star’s passing:

Head played the role of the cerebral Watcher, Rupert Giles, throughout the entirety of Buffy’s seven seasons, specifically serving as a regular throughout the first five and a recurring star throughout the final two. Giles regularly dishes out wisdom to the young members of the “Scooby Gang” and forms a surrogate father relationship with Buffy. Given all of that, it warms my heart to see Marsters talk about learning from Head and refer to him as a “steady presence.” I would’ve expected nothing less from the late British performer.

Alyson Hannigan also had the privilege of working with Head on the show and becoming acquainted with him in real life. Following the confirmation of Head’s death, Hannigan took to Instagram to share a photo of herself and Head, and she dropped a truly heartbreaking caption:

Head’s passing also hits hard considering the other losses the Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast and fandom have experienced in just the last year or so. This past March, Nicholas Brendon – who played Xander Harris – died due to natural causes at the age of 54 and, in the aftermath, various Buffy alums paid tribute. And, in 2025, Dawn Summers actress Michelle Michelle Trachtenberg passed away due to diabetes complications brought on by a liver transplant. With that, Trachtenberg was posthumously honored as well.

It’s hard to argue with Marsters’ assertion that Anthony Head leaves a “hole” in the world, and I can imagine he’ll surely be missed for years to come. Still, based on the sentiments that have been shared about him, Head’s legacy of kindness, laughter and support will remain well remembered for years to come.

Giles is arguably one of the supernatural horror show’s most lovable characters, and he dishes out invaluable wisdom to the characters throughout the course of Buffy’s seven seasons. While the writers deserve plenty of credit, Head’s warm performance really makes the character work, and he also seemed to endear himself to his co-stars while making the series. Emma Caufield, who played Anya Jenkins on the show, also shared some warm words about Head on Instagram:

As a member of the Ted Lasso cast, Head played the despicable Rupert Mannion (to perfection). Now, several members of the cast have since spoken out in the aftermath of Head’s passing, including Roy Kent actor Brett Goldstein. In a post shared to his Instagram story, Goldstein paid loving tribute to Head:

The loss of Anthony Head still feels somewhat surreal at this point, though fans should know that it’s perfectly fine not to be OK like Sarah Michelle Gellar. If anything, though, the outpouring of love for Head is beautiful to see, and I feel confident in saying that his body of work – which includes other TV shows like Merlin and Little Britain – won’t be forgotten.

That beloved cult series, as well as other projects like Ted Lasso, have resulted in tons of fans. But a report by BBC revealed he died at 72 years-old, along with a statement from his daughters Emily and Daisy. Their official comments read:

Anthony Head's daughters also said that they know "how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues and fans of the show he was in," emphasizing just how many fans the TV star had thanks to his work... particularly Buffy and Ted Lasso. The latter is considered one of Apple TV's best shows, and is set to return for more episodes. We'll just have to wait and see if he posthumously appears in the upcoming fourth season when it arrives for those with an Apple TV+ subscription.

The first footage of Ted Lasso Season 4 didn't include the late actor, so only time will tell if Anthony Head's character Rupert Mannion ends up appearing. While not a series regular, the late actor appeared in 18 episodes throughout its original run. Funny enough, Rupert is also the first name of his Buffy character, although he's primarily referred to as Giles.

From the family's comments, it's clear that the late actor's daughters understood just how much Anthony Head's work means to his fans. Particularly Buffy, since the show is a cult classic that's still regularly re-watched by fans (especially those with a Hulu subscription). Unfortunately, the Buffy community has lost a number of the leading actors recently. Because after Michelle Trachtenberg passed away in February of 2025, Xander actor Nicholas Brendan also died this past March. Head's death comes shortly after Hulu scrapped the Buffy revival, which fans were hoping to see Giles appear in.

Our thoughts are with Anthony Head's family during his impossible time. Fans can re-watch his roles in Buffy and Ted Lasso by streaming them, as well as the late actor's other roles in projects like Sweeney Todd, Little Britain, and Merlin. We'll have to which of his co-stars pen tributes to him after his passing.

It hasn’t been two years since SEAL Team ended, but David Boreanaz is already plotting his TV comeback. The actor is officially returning to network television with his new NBC series, a reboot of The Rockford Files. While the show won’t be premiering on the 2026 TV schedule, it will be coming in 2027. So, of course, plenty of people are happy about Boreanaz’s new show, and I am so here for him getting support from a Buffy co-star.

Boreanaz has had a pretty consistent career in the last three decades, starring in multiple successful television shows, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff, Angel. He has stayed close to much of the cast over the years, including Charisma Carpenter. Proving that point, she showed him some love earlier this week when The Rockford Files became official, commenting on NBC’s Instagram post about the new reboot:

Seeing Cordelia hyping up Angel just makes me so happy, and I just think it’s so sweet. Carpenter starred alongside Boreanaz on Angel for the first four seasons, reprising her Buffy role as Cordelia Chase until she was killed off. Angel ended 22 years ago, so the fact that they are still close after all these years is nice. Maybe Carpenter could even guest star on The Rockford Files?

This interaction may make me happy, but it also makes me sad knowing that the Buffy sequel series didn’t work out. While Carpenter wasn’t involved with the show, and Boreanaz would have probably been too busy to make an appearance, this just adds to the “What could have been?” list in terms of bringing back Cordelia and Angel and seeing them interacting with everyone else. If anything, their relationship seems pretty solid, so the interactions will certainly continue, whether on social media or maybe on a different show.

As for The Rockford Files, it was announced in February that Boreanaz would be taking on the role of private detective Jim Rockford, originally played by late actor James Garner in the ‘70s. NBC has confirmed that the new show will be hitting screens in January, so fans won’t have to wait too much longer to have Boreanaz back on their screens. He’s gone from Buffy to Angel to Bones to SEAL Team all one right after the other, so it was only a matter of time before he locked down something new. And reboots are definitely in right now.

I can only imagine the kind of support that Carpenter will give her former co-star when The Rockford Files premieres next year, and I’m already looking forward to it. The only thing that would make it better is if Carpenter joined Boreanaz on the show...

Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a cult classic, and arguably one of the best supernatural teen dramas in history. The beloved show (which is streaming with a Hulu subscription) has been making headlines thanks to its scrapped reboot New Sunnydale, and there are also plenty of folks watching the original for the first time. And Kristine Sutherland, who played Buffy's mom Joyce Summers, recently spoke about the "hardest thing" about bringing that beloved character to life.

While she was never a series regular, Joyce was an important part of Buffy's overall story, especially in the first five seasons. Kristine Sutherland brought a ton of warmth to the show, and ended up being the mother figure for the entire Scooby Gang. She recently did an interview on the YouTube of Cordelia actress Charisma Carpenter, where she revealed some of the difficulties she had playing her signature role. In her words:

Sutherland revealed that her mother wasn't particularly kind, and she wanted to be that for both her real-life son, as well as Joyce on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So when plot lines came up where she failed her onscreen daughter, she would have a hard time pulling the scenes off. Above she referenced the Season 2 episodes "Ted", where Joyce gets a boyfriend (played by John Ritter), and starts taking his side over Buffy's. Fans of the show will recall that the episode later reveals he was actually a homicidal robot. Buffy is my favorite show of all time, so I get the actress' comments. Anytime Joyce and her daughter were at odds it felt wrong.

Buffy and Joyce had their biggest blow out fight in the Season 2 finale episode "Becoming, Part Two", where Sarah Michelle Gellar's title character finally comes out as a Slayer to her mother... and gets kicked out of the house in the process. Sutherland spoke about bringing those difficult moments to life, offering:

While the scene might have been hard to film, it's a memorable one for folks who watched the beloved series... myself included. Particularly LGBTQ+ Buffy fans, who saw themselves in the Slayer's coming out process. Of course, the show would be even more important for queer representation when Willow came out as a lesbian in college.

Fans will remember that Joyce shockingly died in Season 5's "The Body", which Joss Whedon claims is the best thing he's ever done. But she continued to pop up in cameos throughout the show's final two seasons. And the actress is adored by Buffy fans to this day, even if she (understandably) struggled to shoot certain sequences.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is streaming in its entirety on Hulu. Unfortunately, the reboot New Sunnydale seemingly isn't happening on the streamer. We'll just have to wait and see if it gets new life somewhere else.

Unfortunately Hulu decided to scrap the revival New Sunnydale, after previously announcing a full season order. And it sounds like not even rewrites could have helped bring it to life.

Folks were hyped when Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed she was finally returning as Buffy Summers in a reboot pilot for New Sunnydale. Things got even more real when a full season was ordered, with fans eager to see how the narrative would continue after the Buffy series finale. But it's all been dropped and, per a report by THR, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman rewrote the pilot in order to solve some of its issues. But it just wasn't enough.

According to the outlet, the rewritten first episode was a big improvement from the pilot that was shot, but it was too little too late. Ultimately the studio thought that the new Buffy series "wasn't working" and decided against filming a full season, despite it previously being ordered and announced for the general public.

After New Sunnydale was dropped, Sarah Michelle Gellar said one exec in particular didn't understand Buffy, or how popular it continues to be over two decades after its series finale. This seems to go along with the above report, as the revival show was never given the chance to find it's footing before getting the axe from the studio. Still, there are fans hoping to see it get new life at another streamer. Fingers crossed that happens one day.

Overall, this report is a serious bummer, because Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunndydale wasn't given the chance to find its footing. There are plenty of shows that have needed a full season, let alone just a pilot, before properly establishing itself. Just look at The Office, which struggled in Season 1 before becoming one of the best sitcoms of all time.

There are plenty of pilots that never see the light of day; that's been part of the TV industry for decades. But the fact that Hulu announced New Sunnydale was getting a full season order before dropping the project is a big reason why folks are so upset. One can only imagine how it feels like SMG and company.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is streaming in its entirety over on Hulu. Unfortunately New Sunnydale isn't on the 2026 TV schedule, and might never actually be released. Let's just hope that changes one day in the future.

We’ve gotten to the point where '90s nostalgia has cycled into public interest, but what’s up with all these revivals getting the boot? We’re still treating our wounds after the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show was canceled at Hulu, and now we’ve received word that another series based on one of the best '90s movies is no longer happening either.

Did you know there was a Clueless TV show in development? A year ago, it was announced that Alicia Silverstone would be reprising her role as Cher Horowitz in a Peacock series following the character’s life years after the events of the iconic movie. But now, Variety has found out that the show is no longer “moving forward” at the streaming service.

While this is definitely bad news, the report also indicates that the producers behind this Clueless show over at CBS Studios and Paramount are still excited about the specific project and continuing the Clueless IP. So it’s possible that another streamer/network could still pick up the idea or another Clueless spinoff could happen down the line.

The series had Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage attached to write, and they were a good fit considering the duo famously created The O.C. and Gossip Girl – which certainly lend themselves to the tone of Clueless. Additionally, Jordan Weiss, who recently wrote the Freaky Friday sequel, Freakier Friday, was going to collaborate with them as well. The writer/director of Clueless, Amy Heckerling, was also an executive producer on it.

We didn’t know much about the plot for this Clueless series, but it was interesting to imagine what Cher might be doing these days in her late 40s. Perhaps she would have a high schooler of her own!

Back in 2020, there were plans to make a Clueless series about Cher’s best friend Dionne, which also didn’t get past the development process and over the finish line. I have to wonder if the struggle to bring Clueless back has to do with following in the iconic 1995 movie's footsteps and living in the shadow of the original. Given what’s been said about Paramount’s enthusiasm for the property, we have to imagine a spinoff will materialize one way or another, but just not on the immediate TV schedule.

It’s a bummer that this happened not that long after Buffy The Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale was canceled – but that was a more heartbreaking situation because a pilot was filmed and everything, and now it’ll probably sit on a password-protected hard drive in a dark room for a long time instead.

Thankfully, Clueless hasn't been fully turned down yet, plus we can still count on another '90s TV show happening: Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot, which is coming to Hulu (hopefully).

Marsters had ideas about bringing back Spike shortly after New Sunnydale was announced, to the joy of fans. Unfortunately that Hulu revival isn't happening, and it turns out that the PS I Love You actor was actually preparing to appear as the Buffy antagonist turned ally. While speaking on Streamily (via Instagram) Marsters admitted that he was getting back into shape to play Spike again, saying:

While time has passed for everyone in the cast, there was one thing that James Marsters could to prepare to play his signature role: working out. Spike was a gay awakening for many LGBTQ+ folks in the '90s, largely thanks to his washboard abs that were on display various times throughout his tenure on Buffy. As such, the 63 year-old actor was doing a ton of sit ups... before New Sunnydale ended up being dropped by the streamer.

When the Buffy revival was announced by Sarah Michell Gellar, the internet exploded. After the pilot presentation, a full season was announced... but eventually Hulu did an aboutface and changed its mind. Later in the same clip, Marsters spoke about the idea of Buffy still coming back eventually, offering:

Fingers crossed. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a cult classic, and it's remained a vital part of pop culture in the decades since leaving the air. So if Sarah Michelle Gellar wants to try for another reboot, hopefully there's hope that we'll get more episodes eventually. As James Marsters went on:

And after seeing her performance as Ursula Danforth, I'm especially bummed about Hulu dropping the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival.

My favorite TV show of all time is Buffy (which is streaming with a Hulu subscription), and I couldn't help but feel like Gellar channeled her a few times in the horror sequel. And it's just a taste of what she could have brought if New Sunnydale hadn't been dropped.

SMG Channeled Buffy in Ready Or Not 2, And Now My FOMO Is Through The Roof

When Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed that she was returning to the role of Buffy Summers, the generations of fans freaked out. Anticipation got even higher when Hulu announced it had ordered a full season of New Sunnydale. Unfortunately, the streaming service changed its mind, and we're not going to be treated to that revival series after all.

Throughout Ready or Not 2, there were a number of moments where the Cruel Intentions actress felt like she was channeling her signature character via Ursula. To start, SMG's character basically stakes Samara Weaving's Grace. Seeing her take up a pointy weapon and drive into her enemy definitely had me thinking about the countless times Buffy dusted a vamp throughout her seven seasons on the air.

Then there are the various sassy one-liners that Ursula said throughout Ready or Not 2's runtime. Buffy is known for her banter and the quips she'd say to enemies while fighting the forces of evil in Sunnydale. While watching the Radio Silence sequel, I could see how easily Sarah Michelle Gellar would have been able to step back into character as The Chosen One. And now I'm even more mad about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival being dropped.

While Gellar was glad she wasn't in Ready Or Not's final scene, I personally could have used more of Ursula... especially since we're not getting more Buffy. I wish that the execs at Hulu saw just how well he was able to get into the action and quips of the horror sequel; maybe it could have convinced them to give New Sunnydale another chance. But for now, I guess, I'm just going to stay bitter.

Ready or Not 2 is in theaters now as part of the 2026 movie release list. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer can re-watch its seven seasons on Hulu, but we shouldn't expect to get any more episodes.

SMG broke the news about Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale being scrapped by Hulu, despite the pilot being filmed and a full season being ordered. She claimed a Hulu exec wasn't a fan of Buffy, and didn't understand the relevance of the series. While these types of disappointments happen in Hollywood, as a hardcore fan I'm miffed about how things were handled with the cancelled revival series.

Why Would They Announce A Full Season Of New Sunnydale If It Wasn't Ready?

Since Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favorite show of all time, I'd do anything to see the New Sunnydale pilot. News of the pilot presentation was thrilling enough, but when Hulu announced that a full season was greenlit, I felt like I had the power of The Chosen One myself. But after a year of waiting for news and Chloé Zhao's exciting updates, Hulu ended up officially scrapping the new Buffy series this week.

Since then fans have been making their voices known, especially after Zhao was nominated for Oscars for Hamnet and the new Slayer shared what she would have looked like if the show moved forward. And I truly don't understand why Hulu had to make the announcement of a full series if there were issues happening behind the scenes.

The majority of TV pilots end up going nowhere, even if there are major IPs involved. Sarah Michelle Gellar knows this all too well; she returned to her Cruel Intentions role as Kathryn in a pilot that ended up being dropped. The difference here is that Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale was announced to get a full season before the streaming service ended up changing its mind.

I wouldn't have been as mad if Hulu simply bailed on the new Buffy following a less than stellar pilot presentation. But the fact that the streamer got generations of fans (myself included) excited about seeing Duchess of Buffonia back on the screen for new episodes hurts. The show has a cult following, so fans are dedicated to the series even nearly two decades later. And I'm sure I'm not the only one suffering from emotional whiplash.

Brendon famously played the role of fan-favorite character Xander Harris throughout all seven seasons of the supernatural series. Since the news was announced, fans have been sharing tributes to Brendon and, now, many of his former Buffy castmates are doing the same. That includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz and others.

Gellar – who played the eponymous Buffy Summers – shared a tribute to her friend and co-star by way of an Instagram post. As part of that, the actress shared a sweet throwback photo of her and Brendon. Additionally, Gellar shared a sweet message within her caption:

Nicholas Brendon’s family formally announced his passing on Friday, explaining that he died in his sleep from natural causes. Per the statement, Brendon “found his passion in painting and art” in recent years and “loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans.” Brendon’s loved ones also remembered him as a person who was “passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create.” Also, on Friday, Alyson Hannigan – who played Willow Rosenberg on all seven seasons of Buffy – wrote this on Instagram:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which is streamable in its entirety with a Hulu subscription) remains a much loved piece of pop culture, and Brendon’s performance as Xander is a standout part of it. Within a show filled with drama, high stakes and otherworldly entanglements, Brendon helped ground the show through his humorous and relatable portrayal of Harris. All in all, Brendon – along with the writers – made Xander an amiable and invaluable ally for Buffy.

Nicholas Brendon’s passing hits hard, especially considering it’s only been a little over a year since the death of Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers on Buffy. As the original TV show’s loyal fanbase have been mourning all week, the actress/producer shared her own reasons why she hopes the reboot doesn’t stay dead.

Gellar sat down with Andy Cohen’s radio show following Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale’s cancellation. When the host asked if she thinks there are “any other conversations going on” now that the reaction has been “so intense”, here’s how she responded:

It must be heartbreaking to Sarah Michelle Gellar to see fans get so sad about the new Buffy series being cancelled after she spent so much time working on it as a producer and actor. The pilot for New Sunnydale was filmed back in August, but executives allegedly weren't impressed enough once they watched the first episode, calling the show too “small."

Could Hulu retrace their steps after all the outcry from enraged fans? Gellar isn’t sure, but as she brought up, it’s pretty impossible not to notice how many people were looking forward to the new Buffy series. One would hope that somebody would see the huge reaction to the cancellation and reconsider, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Since the cancellation, Gellar said that there was an executive on the Buffy reboot who was “not a fan” of the original and “was proud” to constantly remind others involved that he’d “never seen the entirety of the series”. The actress never named who this executive was, but Deadline claims she was likely referring to Craig Erwich, who is the President of Disney Television Group, and directly oversees all Hulu Originals.

Since the cancellation news broke, new Buffy star Ryan Kiera Armstrong revealed what her character would have looked like, and was overwhelmed with comments from fans saying things like “@hulu count your days” and begging other streaming platforms to pick up the show. Another conversation that’s been happening lately concerns that fans want to see the pilot. But to that, Gellar said that she hopes it doesn’t get leaked because “it wasn’t done.”

The cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer remain TV icons from their time in Sunnydale in the '90s, but now one of those cast members has passed away. Nicholas Brendon, known for playing Xander Harris across all seven seasons of Sarah Michelle Gellar's series, has died at the age of just 54.

The sad news of his death on Friday, March 20 was confirmed on Instagram, with members of Nicholas Brendon's family posting the message (and a request) to fans on the Buffy and Criminal Minds vet's own account. They wrote:

The family's comments didn't go into detail about the cause of death beyond "natural causes." THR reports that Nicholas Brendon suffered a heart attack back in 2023 and was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. He also underwent several spinal surgeries due to cauda equina syndrome. The statement went on:

Hopefully well-wishers can honor the family's request for privacy, and celebrate his life in their own ways, whether than means revisiting Buffy the Vampire Slayer streaming with a Hulu subscription, Criminal Minds with a Paramount+ subscription, or any of his other projects.

Nicholas Brendon hadn't been announced as part of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot that was in the works at Hulu until decided not to move forward with it, so there was no expectation that Sarah Michelle Gellar's return as Buffy meant Brendon returning as Xander. Still, fans of the character had reason to hope.

Of course, Brendon does have a long list of credits on projects that didn't involve the slaying of any vampires on The WB and/or UPN. Buffy was certainly his big break, with the actor portraying Xander across 144 episodes over the course of seven seasons from 1997-2003.

He would later land recurring roles on projects including Kitchen Confidential, Private Practice, and Criminal Minds, the last of which may be his best-known TV project after Buffy. He recurred as computer expert Kevin Lynch, a love interest to Kirsten Vangsness' fan favorite Penelope Garcia.

He additionally landed some movie projects over the years in films like Psycho Beach Party in 2000, Demon Island in 2002, Blood on the Highway in 2008, Big Gay Love in 2013, and Coherence in 2013 as well, to name just a handful.

Nicholas Brendon found himself in trouble with the law over the years after Buffy ended in 2003, with an arrest in 2015 for alleged criminal mischief and damage to property, then another in 2017 for alleged assault. He was arrested again in 2021 for charges regarding prescription drugs.

Points were made. Reading a potential script very different than actually seeing what director Chloé Zhao would have actually brought to the table as a filmmaker. And in the end the pilot would have been just step one in a longer narrative for Buffy the Vampier Slayer: New Sunnydale. Alas, it looks like we'll likely never see that revival actually happen.

Buffy's seven-season run is streaming now on Hulu. New information about the scrapped pilot will likely keep trickling out, which shows how much fan investment there still is. Still, it seems unlikely that Hulu will change its mind.

The news that the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot isn't moving forward at Hulu hit fans like a ton of bricks. The only thing more frustrating than Buffy's reboot not moving forward is the list of absolutely insane details that have come out over the last couple of days explaining why the series isn’t moving forward. That includes the fact that the exec who made the decision was apparently a proud anti-fan of the original series.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Calls Out Hulu Exec For Killing The Buffy Reboot

The first piece of perplexing news came yesterday in an interview that Sarah Michelle Gellar gave to People in which she revealed that an executive, whom she did not name, that was involved in the series, apparently wasn’t a fan of the original series. That would be fine on its own, but Gellar indicated the exec seemed to have no love for the reboot from the beginning. Gellar said:

While Sarah Michelle Gellar didn’t name the executive, Deadline believes it was Craig Erwich, the President of Disney Television Group, who directly oversees all Hulu Originals. Erwich was also the person who informed all parties involved that the show was not moving forward with a phone call at 6 p.m. on a Friday evening, just as Sarah Michelle Gellar was appearing at SXSW for the premiere of her new movie Ready or Not 2. Zhao, meanwhile, was involved in Oscar weekend activities promoting her movie Hamnet, which had received multiple nominations including a Best Director nomination for Zhao.

Deadline indicates there was no reason that the decision had to be relayed on a Friday night. This certainly feels like a “We can talk about on Monday,” sort of thing. What’s perhaps more interesting, and more frustrating, however, are the alleged reasons that Hulu passed on the pilot in the first place.

What Was (Reportedly) Wrong With The Buffy Reboot Pilot

While the show being axed was a shock to fans, it seems that it was just as much a shock to many of the executives who were involved, as they believed any issues with the show had been dealt with. According to Deadline, the main note coming out of Hulu after the pilot was completed was that it was too small and appeared to be geared too young.

Ryan Kiera Armstrong, the show’s lead, was 15 at the time the pilot filmed, slightly younger than Gellar had been when Buffy first launched, she was 18, but obviously she had been cast for a reason. As far as the show seeming “small,” it seems the direction the creative team had been given was to keep it on par with the original WB/UPN series, which wasn’t exactly a massive show.

The notes were still taken in, and show writers Nora and Lilla Zuckerman engaged in a significant rewrite that increased the size of Gellar’s part, skewed more adult, and was 90 minutes long. The rewrite was well-received, to the point that the series being picked up became much more likely.

It’s still unclear exactly why the new pilot script wasn’t deemed good enough. Some sources tell Deadline the show just wasn’t as good as the original series. It’s also suggested the new pilot may have been too expensive, though if the original pilot was seen as "too small," that’s reason doesn't sound as believable.

Whatever the reasons, barring an 11th-hour stay of execution, it appears that the Buffy reboot is dead. It’s unfortunate fans never even got a chance to judge the show. Maybe somebody can pull a Deadpool and get the pilot online so that the people who are fans of the show can judge its quality.

It may be hard to believe, but February 26 marked a year since Michelle Trachtenberg died. She is one of many Hollywood actors who tragically died before turning 40, as she was only 39. Her death sent shockwaves across the world, with celebrities and fans alike paying tribute to her. On the first anniversary, her on-screen Buffy the Vampire Slayer sister, Sarah Michelle Gellar, shared a heart-wrenching post about trying to understand how quickly time had passed.

Many Buffy stars paid tribute to Trachtenberg when she passed, including Gellar. She’s kept her on-screen little sis’ memory alive over the last year, and even wished her a happy birthday in October on what would have been her 40^th. So it’s no surprise that Gellar would share a heartbreaking Instagram post on the first anniversary of her co-star's death. Reflecting on the over 30 years of memories they have together, and how Trachtenberg would even show up to her kids’ birthday parties, the actress posted:

While they won’t ever be enough, the I Know What You Did Last Summer star seems to be as grateful as ever regardless.

Trachtenberg joined Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Buffy’s little sister Dawn in the fifth season, starring in the series through the rest of its run. Over time, she ended up becoming a useful member of the Scooby Gang. Her addition may have come as a surprise, but it’s hard to imagine the show without her. She definitely made a big impact not only on the characters but also on the fans and the cast, as evidenced by Gellar’s post.

By the time Buffy came along for Trachtenberg, it was only one of the many roles that she had landed. The former child star was known for The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Harriet the Spy, All My Children, Inspector Gadget, and many more. She also appeared on the Nickelodeon game show Figure It Out on numerous occasions. Not to mention the many projects she did afterwards, notably Ice Princess and Gossip Girl, that are still fan-favorites.

I would assume that as time goes on, Sarah Michelle Gellar will definitely be keeping Michelle Trachtenberg’s memory alive, whether privately or publicly, and it just shows how close they grew over the decades they knew each other. There is only one Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s my favorite show and influenced my love of television from a young age. I know it’s a show that means so much to many people, therefore, it's unsurprising that many shows take influence from the '90s classic. Some make direct references to it, and some just have a feel of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

School Spirits is its own show, and I really adore it. Lately, it’s been giving me the same feel as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in the best way.

School Spirits Season 3's Villain Is Starting To Remind Me Of The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Big Bads

Buffy the Vampire Slayer has some iconic villains. These bad guys would usually have a reign of terror all season. They were the Big Bads. It isn’t and wasn’t unique to Buffy for a season-long arc with a main villain. However, it’s the show that had the most impact on me with season-long villains. I used to look forward every year to seeing who or what would try to destroy the world and open the Sunnydale hellmouth. It was part of the Buffy experience.

Many great superhero shows also follow this pattern of a major villain each season. I watch a lot of streaming shows, so often there isn’t a main villain of the season but a major bad guy throughout the series. Therefore, I hadn’t noticed that School Spirits started to take the superhero and Buffy the Vampire Slayer route of a major villain each year. Season 1 focuses on Maddie (Peyton List) trying to find out what happened to her.

She wanted to know who killed her or how she died. The villain of that season was going to be whoever killed Maddie. Things turned out more complicated. This led to Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman) and Janet (Jess Gabor) being the villains of Season 2. Season 3 redeems both of them, but you worry about what Janet and Mr. Martin are capable of for a while.

The School Spirits Season 3 villain actually has some terror to him. Van Heidt (Michael Adamthwaite) is scary in a way that feels reminiscent of characters such as The Mayor (Harry Groener) and the Master (Mark Metcalf) on Buffy. With only a few episodes before the School Spirits Season 3 finale, I am curious where the story takes Van Heidt and the darkness lurking within him.

I hope School Spirits now makes it a tradition to have main villains each season. It adds more gravity to the season.

The School Spirits Groups Have A Very Scooby Gang Feel

School Spirits now has a large group of characters. It has the core humans and the main ghosts, plus a few additions, such as Quinn (Cihang Ma). The humans feel like an unbreakable unit, and the ghosts as well. The first season of School Spirits brings Nicole (Kiara Pichardo), Claire (Rainbow Wedell), Xavier (Spencer MacPherson), and Simon (Kristian Ventura) together to help find out what happened to Maddie. Season 2, their bond grows as they try to save her.

The ghost gang was already a group before Maddie arrives but they added Quinn and Yuri (Miles Elliot) to their group in Season 2. These two separate large groups feel like a cohesive unit, all orbiting around Maddie.

It feels very much like how the Scooby Gang orbited around Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) throughout most of the series. Maddie is the center of their group, but each person adds something to it. They function and exist as a collective because that’s what works best. The humans and ghosts all love Maddie, so doing what it takes to help her is often their top priority.

I Used To Love The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Twists Because They Were Actually Shocking. The School Spirits Twists Give Me The Same Excitement

I trust School Spirits to deliver a surprising twist. It has done some really shocking moments over the last three seasons. Everything from Maddie not actually being dead to White Eyes not being the villain. The show knows how to surprise and delight. Now, it has not reached Buffy the Vampire Slayer levels of shocking moments, but the writers have done some twists really well. I haven’t seen some of them coming.

Maybe because I hadn’t had nearly three decades of TV watching history to learn when to spot a twist, but the Buffy twists always shocked me. Some of the best Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes usually had some sort of twist. These game changing events still stick in my mind because they were so surprising at the time.

I hope that School Spirits eventually reaches Buffy's level of ability to pull off a moment so shocking and compelling that I still think about it decades later.

Wally And Maddie Remind Me Of Buffy And Angel

I am personally team Spike (James Marsters). Yes, Spike has a lot of issues and is toxic, but the TV shipper in me loved Buffy and Spike’s chemistry. I also liked Angel (David Boreanaz) and Buffy. I just didn’t love them together as much as Spike and Buffy. Until the big twist of Season 2 (one of the show’s best seasons), Angel and Buffy had a sweet first love innocence. Wally (Milo Manheim) and Maddie also have a similar quality.

Angel guided and looked out for Buffy as the stress of being the slayer often got to her. Wally has been earning Boyfriend Of The Year awards in School Spirits Season 3. He’s been understanding and there for her whenever she needs him.

I have been loving the evolution of Wally this year, including his new friendships, following his heart, and making unexpected decisions. He’s been just as kind and patient as Angel was in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 1. Wally and Maddie’s relationship has also gotten more complicated, including having a similar problem to Angel and Buffy’s after Season 2.

Wally and Maddie cannot be together physically because they live in different worlds. This isn’t a problem for either, but a small barrier that strengthens their bond. No sex means they have to grow deeper emotional connections. Angel and Buffy became such a strong relationship because the emotional passion stood above their sexual desires.

I Love That Maddie And Buffy Are The Leaders And Heroes Of Their Group, But Very Human and Layered

Maddie has a duty to her friends and family. They saved her, so now she feels the burden to save Simon. She also must now save all the ghosts from being pushed to an even worse version of the afterlife. She has the weight of her friends on her shoulders.

Buffy always had to save the world and her friends. It caused her a lot of anxiety and stress. It became too much that she regretted being brought back from the dead. She enjoyed finally being at peace in death. One of the best storylines of School Spirits Season 3 has been Maddie’s anxiety. Anyone who underwent the same ordeal wouldn’t be emotionally stable.

Therefore, I love that the School Spirits writers are approaching Maddie’s trauma over all this realistically. It’s the same type of storytelling that I would expect on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was always a superhero show about the humanity of heroes.

It’s pretty impressive that people are talking about the TV show over 20 years after the finale came out, but it goes to show the fandom is still big, and very much awaiting that upcoming reboot with every one of her social media posts.

What’s Going On With The Buffy Reboot, Anyways?

Last year, it was officially announced that Hulu was moving forward with a new Buffy series with Hamnet and Eternals filmmaker Chloé Zhao behind it. Zhao was apparently the one who convinced Sarah Michelle Gellar to reprise her famous role, thanks to her wishes to “revisit the world, not reinvent” it.

Since, a number of actors have joined the cast, with Ryan Kiera Armstrong expected to be a lead. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has said some other OG characters will return to the show as well, but that remains a secret for now. The pilot for the Buffy series was filmed over the summer, and last we heard, the series should be coming to those with a Hulu subscription sometime this year.

While we wait for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale to (hopefully) find a place on the 2026 TV schedule, you can see Gellar in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come in theaters this March 20.

After he mused about whether or not he could psychologically play Spike again, Cordelia actress Charisma Carpenter pushed him and asked if he was subtly confirming his return for the new Buffy series. He quickly backpedaled, saying:

While he was careful not to say too much, it sounds like there has been interest in having Marsters back as Spike. Whether he's referencing fan discourse or actual talks with Hulu is unclear, but these comments are sure to turn the heads of superfans out there like me. Could the beloved vampire actually reunite with Sarah Michelle Gellar's title character? It's unclear, but I would definitely like to see it.

Of course, there are some concerns about the idea of James Marsters playing Spike in New Sunnydale. Perhaps the biggest is that the character supposed to be immortal, and the actor has understandably aged since Buffy's series finale aired in 2003. This could also prevent David Boreanaz from returning to the role of Angel.

While the new Buffy show will feature Sarah Michelle Gellar's title character training a new Slayer, it seems inevitable that more OGs would join the fun... even in a guest capacity. Perhaps the most obvious choices would be Alyson Hannigan's Willow and Anthony Head's Giles, who as known for dishing out advice throughout the original series. Fans are also hoping that Dawn gets appropriately honored in the new series following actress Michelle Trachtenberg's death.

Aside from Spike's frequent shirtless scenes, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is largely popular among queer fans thanks to its groundbreaking portrayal of a same-sex romance. Alyson Hannigan's Willow came out as a lesbian in Season 4, and her relationship with Amber Benson's Tara was shown long before queer representation became commonplace.

LGBTQ+ fans also sometime find a kinship with Sarah Michelle Gellar's title character. Particularly the Season 2 scene where she comes out as a Slayer to her mother, and the argument that follows. That's a back and forth that many queer folks can unfortunately relate to, when not being accepted by their family members.

As you may know, Sarah Michelle Gellar is working on a Buffy revival series, titled New Sunnydale and expected to arrive on Hulu. Fans are curious to see which other OG members of the cast might appear, including James Marsters. Of course, having Spike or Angel reappear might offer some logistical challenges, as they're both vampires who are supposed to be ageless. If they're going to appear in the new Buffy episodes, we might need something like digital de-aging technology to make it make sense narratively.

News broke back in early 2025 that Buffy The Vampire Slayer would be coming back thanks to Sarah Michelle Gellar and Hulu. The streaming service greenlit a pilot order for a continuation to the beloved fantasy series with Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao also behind the project. Almost a year later, Gellar has just shared more details about why she’s making the series.

In a new interview with Evan Ross Katz, Sarah Michelle Gellar spoke in depth about her thoughts on the new series set to be called Buffy The Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale. In her words:

Hey, no one can blame Sarah Michelle Gellar for wanting to put the nail in the coffin on Buffy after its successful seven-season run, but she changed her mind about revisiting the series for a very specific reason. As she shared:

From May to August of 2025, a bunch of cast members were added to the New Sunnydale cast, including a round of young stars led by The Skeleton Crew’s Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel Di Tomasso, and Jack Cutmore-Scott. Chase Sui Wonders was added after she and Gellar were both in the latest I Know What You Did Last Summer. Zhao has also teased more OG characters joining the cast.

Prior to these comments, Gellar has also called Zhao a “true fan that is desperate to revisit the world, not reinvent it” and has said it would be accessible to new and old fans of Buffy. It’s apparently been a “nerve-wracking” process for Gellar to give fans something that they’ll love, but she seems committed. She continued:

Per these comments, it sounds like Gellar and Zhao are still working out the details of the story of the new Buffy before filming it, but it’s coming along. Gellar also clarified if it’s a reboot by saying this:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer ran on The WB from the summer of 1997 to 2001 before switching to UPN for its final two seasons. The finale aired on September 24, 2002, making the last appearance of Buffy Summers being nearly 25 years old. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more about New Sunnydale, but for now we can look forward to Gellar returning to the horror space with Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, coming to theaters on March 27, 2026.

For somebody with as long and varied a career as Sarah Michelle Gellar, the actress has worked surprisingly little with Disney over the years. It’s certainly not because she isn’t a fan, as the actress and her family recently made a stop at the Happiest Place on Earth for a “much needed’ break in the middle of Gellar’s recent run of horror projects, from Dexter to Buffy to big-screen sequels.

It’s difficult to think of a better time to hit Disneyland than right now. It’s the Christmas season, and it’s also Disneyland's 70th anniversary celebration. Those two things combine to make for a pretty amazing trip, and based on the photos posted to Instagram, Sarah Michelle Gellar, husband Freddie Prinze Jr., and their family certainly had a festive experience.

Gellar is absolutely rocking a pair of holiday Minnie Mouse ears and making it look far better than anybody has a right to. Also, as somebody who is obsessed with Disneyland food and drink, I have to give her bonus points for going with the Cold Brew Black Caf at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. It’s absolutely one of the best things to drink at Disneyland, and the proper start to any great Disneyland day.

Considering that Freddie Prinze Jr. was the voice of Kanan Jarrus in Star Wars: Rebels, one imagines he particularly enjoyed the visit to the galaxy far, far away.

Gellar also includes a couple of images from Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and she also took rides on Toy Story Midway Mania and checked out Haunted Mansion Holiday. An evening picture in front of It’s a Small World, all done up in Christmas lights, is also a must-do. She really hit some of the best rides at Disneyland and the top rides at Disney California Adventure.

A trip to Disneyland is probably something of a culture shock, considering that most of the actress’ recent and current work is a bit disconnected from traditional Disney fare. She most recently appeared in the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel, and her upcoming projects include Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, where she plays one of the monsters, and the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, where she will, one assumes, kill the monsters.

Although, since the upcoming reboot of Buffy is a Hulu project, that does technically make it part of the Disney family. Disney Parks got in on the fun with a comment on Gellar’s Instagram post, saying…

I am a little jealous of Gellar and family, as my own visit to Disneyland during the holiday season got rained out, though even in less than great whether it’s hard to have a bad day at Disneyland. Whatever else may be going wrong, at least you’re at Disneyland.

There you have it. While Dushku is an executive producer on the new documentary In Waves and War, she seemingly isn't hoping to get back in front of the camera anytime soon. This is sure to be a bummer for Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans who were hoping to catch up with Faith when the forthcoming Hulu series is released. But maybe we can get an update about her whereabouts without the former actress having to come out of retirement.

Of course, the fact that Gellar is involved and once gain playing Buffy Summers is definitely a boon for the series. We're not getting a reboot, but a continuation of the story fans know and love. Zhao spoke to Vanity Fair about the actress' return to her signature role, saying:

Points were made. Gellar was at the top of the call sheet for a whopping seven seasons on air, and playing Buffy required tons of night shoots, action sequences, and long hours. She understands this show intimately, and will no doubt be a resource when crafting the new series.

As fans look forward to the new Scrubs revival on the 2026 TV schedule, they will also be able to get excited about another revival of a beloved show from that era of TV. Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be getting the reboot/revival as well, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning to welcome a new generation. Now, the show’s director, Chloé Zhao, is hyping up her return as well as some other OG characters.

Buffy is one of the best vampire shows of all time, so it was no surprise when it was announced in February that a new series was officially moving forward at Hulu. Gellar will return as the titular Slayer in a recurring capacity, with Ryan Kiera Armstrong taking up the mantle as a new Slayer. It’s unknown who else will return, but Zhao told Variety that fans should remember that this is not a reboot, but instead a continuation of sorts, and there are certainly plans to bring on other fan-favorites:

A few Buffy stars have expressed interest in returning, and while other original cast members have not been announced, Zhao is making sure to hype up the possibility. It’s only a matter of time before more OGs are announced, but at the very least, Buffy will not be the only one returning to Sunnydale.

Among those who want to return is Charisma Carpenter, who starred in the first three seasons as Cordelia Chase before moving on to the spinoff Angel. Although Cordelia ultimately dies, characters on Buffy have been known to come back from the dead, including Buffy Summers herself. Carpenter explained earlier this year that she hopes to be involved in some fashion, and although fans are still sharing their unpopular Cordy takes, I know I'd love to see her return.

That being said, just because Gellar and other OGs are returning, fans don’t necessarily have to watch the original series in order to watch the new one. Gellar previously shared that the new show will “cater to the people,” but there will also be Easter eggs as the revival ushers in a whole new generation.

Revivals and reboots can either be hits or misses, so it’s hard to tell at this point how the Buffy series will go. It does sound like they’re taking great care in making sure that it caters to a new audience while also keeping original fans interested. As a fan of the original show, I’m intrigued to see what will happen next, and I’m keeping an open mind about it.

All this talk about it is making me want to rewatch the original one, though, which is streaming in full with a Hulu subscription, along with the 1992 film and Angel. More details should be released soon about the new series, but the wait will definitely be worth it.

I regret not getting to see The Naked Gun when the comedy hit theaters earlier this year, but I did finally watch it streaming with my Paramount+ subscription, and while there were some great laughs throughout the movie, there was one specific joke that had me laughing out loud, mostly because it seemed to come out of nowhere. I'm talking about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer/TiVo scene. And that's as vague as I'll be before putting a mild spoiler warning here.

If you haven't seen the movie, I suggest doing that before reading further, as the joke is undoubtedly going to be funnier if you watch it than my description of it will be.

The scene features Liam Neeson's Frank Drebin Jr. discovering that his love interest, Beth Davenport (Pamela Anderson), failed to honor his request not to hook his TiVo DVR up to the internet. Why? Because he had a collection of Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes saved on there that were set to expire if the device was put online. If you weren't around or using a DVR back in the aughts, this was a thing TiVo did to save space (unless you adjusted the settings to save the recording).

Frank loaned Beth the DVR so that she could watch the show and finally start to get his references. Since Beth plugged the TiVo into the internet, the episodes are all gone. As Frank laments just before confirming it:

And make no mistake, Liam Neeson doesn't phone his character's devastation in (which is a good thing, as I'd fear for the wellbeing of that phone). Just consider some of Liam Neeson's best movies for a second (Taken, Batman Begins, Schindler's List). You don't cast an Oscar-nominated actor in a major role if you don't want top-level intensity when a scene calls for it, which is exactly what Neeson delivers here. Also, major points to Pamela Anderson for how well she plays off Neeson in this scene, looking legitimately contrite, if occasionally perplexed the whole time.

My inner 2000s-self appreciates the fact that this movie not only showed Buffy some love, including references to two of the best episodes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but also love for the TiVo era of watching TV, complete with visuals and sound effects as Frank navigated the menu in search of his episodes. Apparently, Frank either isn't aware that all of those Buffy episodes can easily be watched on repeat with a DVD box set or a Hulu subscription, or he just likes Buffy on DVR the same way I can only assume he prefers listening to the Black-Eyed Peas on an iPod, rather than Spotify.

The Director Stands By This Joke Even Though It's Polarizing

As it turns out, director Akiva Shaffer pushed to keep the joke in the movie. When speaking with Slashfilm, he praises Neeson's performance in the scene, but also notes that at one point Neeson was skeptical about the joke, saying:

Shaffer went on to talk about how, after having spent so much time going through every second of the movie, this is the one joke that still makes him laugh, though he knows it's polarizing:

Granted, I'm on the get-the-joke side of things this time, but I've been on the other side of the audience plenty of times with other movies, so I can understand what he's saying. Regardless, I'm glad it stayed in the movie, because it really came out of nowhere, and I love that the scene goes on for much longer than it probably needs to. This couple only just recently came through a dramatic romantic sequence involving a threesome with a jealous, murderous snowman, so it's even funnier to me that a dispute as mundane as expired episodes on a TiVo could cause a rift in their love story.

Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my absolute favorite, and one of the best supernatural treen dramas ever. The cult classic ran for seven seasons, and continues to get new audiences for those with a Hulu subscription. That streamer will also be the home of the possible reboot, if/when a full season is ordered after Chloé Zhao's pilot. And Sarah Michelle Gellar recently gave her take on whether or not you need to have watched its original run to enjoy the new Buffy.

Honestly, I'm with her. But for those folks out there who were too young to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer or who think that seven long seasons is too much to catch up on, it looks like the new series will be written so that the story is still able to be enjoyed. That being said, it sounds like the pilot had oodles of Easter Eggs and references to the OG. And I'm dying to see what they are.

At the time of writing this story, a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer show hasn't been given a season order by Hulu. Just a pilot was shot, albeit one with an Oscar-winning director behind the camera. But Sarah Michelle Gellar's BTS photo dump and comments about the possible reboot has helped to buoy fan excitement about what's to come. Hopefully the streamer makes an announcement one way or another soon. The suspense is truly killing me.

Buffy's original run was on network TV most season had a whopping 22 episodes, with the exception being Season 1. So there's a ton of lore and history that audiences saw the Scooby Gang get into during their years in Sunnydale. I'm someone who regularly re-watched my favorite episodes, so I assumeI I'd be able to catch the references that were snuck into the reboot pilot. But I'll never get my chance if the show isn't actually given the full season order at Hulu.

Buffy Shared Her Power In "Chosen"

Buffy the Vampire Slayer has the honor of being a TV show that actually ended well. Throughout Season 7 our hero and her friends are fighting The First Evil, who is attempting to end the Slayer line. After the good guys assemble an army of young women, Willow uses ancient magic to activate every Potential. Just like that, Buffy and Faith weren't the only "hot chicks with superpowers" in the group.

What followed in "Chosen" was an absolutely epic final battle, where countless Slayers battled The First's army of Ubervamps from within the Hell Mouth. It's awesome seeing the Potentials finally have some power, although we lost a few, like Amanda, as well as saw the death of Emma Caulfied's Anya. Buffy had spent much of the season training the girls, and it sounds like she'll be back in that mentorship role in the reboot pilot... if we ever actually see it.

Nova might be the new Slayer, but the fact that the potential Buffy reboot is keeping the same story and bringing back Sarah Michelle Gellar makes me think that the OG is still going to have a major part to play. It would be fascinating to see how she assembles and trains various Slayers from around the world.

While Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended after seven seasons, Joss Whedon ended up continuing the story through years of comic books. It's unclear if these will still be considered canon in the possible reboot, since they went on some truly wild adventures. Right now, the primary question is whether or not Hulu will actually green light a full season. Either way, we've seen how dynamic Buffy is when training fellow Slayers.

Gellar's photo dump has helped to buoy fan excitement, which I have to assume will help the odds of the pilot becoming a full-fledged series. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, especially if a new season will bring back more legacy characters alongside Little Miss Likes to Fight.

Some people might question why she’s returning to an old character and risking being pigeonholed, but Gellar is setting the record straight on that

While working on the original Buffy series, Gellar also starred in hits such as Cruel Intentions, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2, solidifying herself as one of the ‘90s cult classic queens. She’s continued to reliably work in the supernatural and slasher genres, appearing in Dexter: Original Sin and Wolf Pack. Still with a brief cameo in the 2025 sequel I Know What You Did Last Summer and a return to Buffy, USA Today asked Gellar whether or not she feels pigeonholed in her career, and she gave an answer I love:

The Do Revenge actress is right. You can try and reject it, but the reboot renaissance didn’t just happen out of nowhere. It’s driven by nostalgia and projects that remain timeless, resonating with new generations as well as original audiences. Often reboots are announced after years of loyal fanbases calling for them.

For those fans, Gellar is finally ready to return to Buffy, saying she doesn’t feel the character is forced upon her, but rather it’s a choice to return to her roots. She explained:

I love a grateful celebrity, and I personally agree with Geller that she’s not pigeonholed but rather just well loved for her iconic characters. In her own words, there’s nothing wrong with reviving a beloved project, as long as the reboot has a fresh take, while still "capturing the DNA of the original.”

A perfect example would be the 2025 summer blockbuster I Know What You Did Last Summer, in which ‘90s stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Gellar’s husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., also returned to their OG roles. While the Buffy actress’ top secret cameo was only two minutes long, she certainly didn’t waste her screentime.

Brought back to life in a dream sequence, Helen Shivers (Gellar) confronts her reboot counterpart Madeline Cline, dressed in her croker queen dress and crown while wielding the OG murder hook. She also flawlessly doesn't look a day over 30). It’s a scene that the movie certainly didn’t need, but one I would have been sorry to miss out on, given that Gellar slays it, as per usual.

I can only Gellar she brings the same energy to the Buffy reboot, but there is no doubt she will. While behind-the-scenes photos seem to confirm our OG vampire-killing queen will wield the stake once again, she won’t be alone. In this reboot, it seems Gellar will take on more of a mentor role, as a new Chosen One will take the spotlight. However, that doesn’t mean the ‘90s Buffy cast will be totally forgotten, as the Cruel Intentions actress says she wants to find a balance between bringing back old characters and introducing new ones.

While I’m sad that some beloved characters like Anya and Cordelia probably won’t be in the reboot due to their deaths in the original series, I can still hold out hope for more dream sequences! What I'm thankful for, though, is that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in the mix, and she's incredibly grateful to be playing the character that made her a cultural icon. Despite how long its been on the air, I maintain that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is still one of the best supernatural teen dramas ever. New audiences have been introduced to the Scooby Gang by streaming the show with a Hulu subscription, while OG fans like me were thrilled to learn that Sarah Michelle Gellar was filming a reboot pilot for the streamer, directed by the great Chloé Zhao. The filmmaker recently shared just how excited she was to join the property, which has me even more hyped for what's (possibly) to come.

Anticipation for the possible Buffy reboot has been definitely hitting a peak, even though there's been no indication that Hulu has ordered a full season. Still, Sarah Michelle Gellar posted a photo dump from the set, with fans already trying to decode what might come. Hopefully we actually get to see Zhao's pilot, otherwise we might never know if those theories are correct.

The first photo is arguably the most exciting, but it's fun to get a peek behind the curtain on what it's been like filming the Buffy reboot pilot. To this day I still think Buffy's series finale is one of the best in TV history.

Fans are trying to dissect every frame from this post, in hopes of discerning the story of the pilot. The sixth slide shows what looks like a beach or dessert location, with one fan theorizing:

Honestly, this might be legit. While I'm not saying I recognize the desert, it would make sense if Buffy brought her new protégée to communicate with the First Slayer in the reboot. She did this journey herself back in Season 5, as did the Potentials in Season 7. Hardcore stand will recall the First Slayer first debuted via dreams in the Season 4 finale "Restless".

Of course, this is just one fan theory. But the fact that folks are already trying to figure out what's happening via these cryptic photos shows that there's interest in the pilot presentation. Let's just hope that a season is ordered and we actually get to see what Gellar and Zhao worked on.

After that Carpenter pivoted over to the spinoff Angel, where she was a series regular for the first four seasons. What's more, Cordelia recently returned to the franchise in Audible's Slayers: A Buffyverse Story, specifically one that's come from an alternate universe and is The Slayer.

Later in her same TikTok, Carpenter shared more information about where she stands with the Buffy reboot pilot that's being filmed. In her words:

Well, that was pretty cut and dry. So far SMG is the only Buffy legacy character confirmed for the reboot pilot, which may or may not end up resulting in a series order. Giles was always dispensing knowledge in the beloved series, so that's another OG that I'm desperately hoping gets to join the fun sometime in the future.

Indeed, there are a ton of Buffy legacy characters that fans are hoping to catch up with if a new series is ordered by Hulu. In addition to Giles and Cordelia, Alyson Hannigan's Willow seems like an obvious to return at some point. Unfortunately Michelle Trachtenberg's death has put the kibosh on seeing Dawn again.

Sarah Michelle Gellar has been a star of TV and film for decades now, and is best known for starring as the title character of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which is streaming with a Hulu subscription). That's my favorite show of all time, and I've loved seeing SMG have a renaissance lately with a variety of exciting projects like Dexter: Original Sin and the Buffy reboot pilot. She also surprised people with her cameo in the new I Know What You Did Last Summer, but there's another legacy character I need to see her reprise ASAP: Cici Cooper from Scream 2.

Between returning as Helen Shivers in IKWYDLS (despite her death) and filming new scenes as Buffy Summers, Sarah Michelle Gellar is making a habit out of reprising her most famous horror roles. And since Scream 7 began filming in January, it seems like the perfect time for her to pop back in as Cici.

Scream 7 Is Already Bringing A Ton Of Legacy Characters Back.

Since SMG died in Scream 2 (which is streaming with a Max subscription), one would assume that would be the end of her time as Cici Cooper. But recent installments in the horror franchise have changed the rules, with Skeet Ulrich returning as a ghost version of Billy Loomis. This opened the door for more of these returns, which is exactly what is happening for the upcoming horror movie Scream 7.

What we know about Scream 7 is limited, but director Kevin Williamson is bringing back a ton of legacy characters... somehow. The following have already been confirmed online, to the confusion and delight of fans like myself: Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, who were Ghostfaces Stu Macher and Roman Bridger. Additionally, David Arquette is set to return, despite Dewey's death in 2022's Scream. The latter is especially thrilling, since Scream VI was the only installment without his character physically present.

With so many dead characters set to appear in the next slasher, it seems logical that Cici could also show up. Unfortunately, Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed she didn't get the call, despite being interested in joining the fun. Although, since we just got through months of her lying about returning in I Know What You Did Last Summer, maybe we should take the 48-year-old icon's comments with a grain of salt.

Sarah Michelle Gellar's chase scene as Cici is arguably one of the best scenes in Scream 2, despite her not being a leading role in the highly anticipated sequel. The same can also be said for Helen's death in I Know What You Did Last Summer, which is why SMG is one of the all-time scream queens ever. As such, bringing her back along with other legacy characters in Scream 7 just feels right. So I'm going to keep crossing my fingers that this actually happens.

Scream 7 is currently expected to arrive in theaters on February 27th as part of the 2026 movie release list. Fans will have to wait and see if more surprise cameos are included, as well as if Hulu orders the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot to series.

I am both fascinated and horrified by the idea of being transformed into an animal. This is likely because I have seen numerous films and TV shows, such as the following, that depict human characters undergoing this process, either by choice or against their will.

Quick disclaimer: I wanted to keep this list exclusive to characters who, in most cases, fully metamorphosed into an Earthly non-human being, so there will be no half-human, half-creature hybrids like in The Fly or other body horror flicks of that nature, or mentions of werewolf movies, for instance. Without further ado, let’s get wild!

Wilby Daniels (The Shaggy Dog)

Some of the best movies about talking dogs involve a canine who started off as human, such as The Shaggy Dog. Disney's live-action fantasy from 1959, which later spawned a sequel called The Shaggy D.A. and a remake with Tim Allen, stars Tommy Kirk as Wilby Daniels, a teenager who is cursed with an affliction that periodically transforms him into a sheepdog.

Harry Limpet (The Incredible Mr. Limpet)

In 1964's The Incredible Mr. Limpet, Don Knotts plays the title character, who longs to live amongst the creatures of the sea. He receives his wish when he is magically transformed into an animated fish, which ends up giving him a better opportunity to assist the Navy during World War II than he had as a human.

Tiana And Naveen (The Princess And The Frog)

In the classic fairy tale that the 2009 Disney animated film The Princess and the Frog is based on, the prince returns to human form after receiving a kiss from the princess. However, in this reimaging, when New Orleans restaurant server Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) kisses Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos), she becomes a ribbiting amphibian as well.

The Kids From Animorphs (Animorphs)

From 1998 to 2000, Nickelodeon aired a TV show based on the Animorphs book series by Katherine Applegate and her husband, Michael Grant (writing together as K. A. Applegate). It follows a group of teens who are given the power to turn into any animal they touch by a group of aliens, in order to help them fight a war against a parasitic extraterrestrial race planning to infiltrate the human race.

Professor Minerva McGonagall (Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone)

Maggie Smith's character from the Harry Potter movies, Professor Minerva McGonagall, frequently uses a spell that transforms her into a cat. She demonstrates this in 2000's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, when the title hero (played by Daniel Radcliffe) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) assume they have made it to the Hogwarts instructor's class before she arrives, only to discover she was the feline sitting atop her desk.

Beast Boy (Teen Titans)

To save his life from an illness that West African green monkeys are immune to, young Garfield Logan's father temporarily transformed him into the animal with an untested experiment that ended up giving him the ability to shapeshift into any creature he chooses. The DC Comics superhero, better known as Beast Boy, would become a fan favorite on the beloved animated series, Teen Titans, as voiced by Greg Cipes.

Kenai (Brother Bear)

In 2003's Oscar-nominated animated film Brother Bear, Joaquin Phoenix voices a post-ice age Alaskan hunter named Kenai, who is magically turned into his worst enemy, a brown bear, but learns to embrace his fate after befriending a cub named Koda (Jeremy Suarez).

Jayna (Super Friends)

Popular DC Comics heroes The Wonder Twins were created specifically for the animated precursor to Justice League, Super Friends. While the male sibling, Zan, can only turn into water (including in liquid, solid, or gaseous form), his sister, Jayna, can transform into any animal existing on any planet, even including mythological creatures.

Emperor Kuzco (The Emperor's New Groove)

In the funny cult favorite Disney animated film, The Emperor's New Groove, David Spade voices a selfish royal named Kuzco, who receives a much-needed crash course in humility in a most bizarre fashion. When he is mistakenly transformed into a llama by his vengeful former advisor, Yzma (Eartha Kitt), who really intended to poison him, he is forced to enlist the help of a peasant named Pacha (John Goodman) to return to normal.

Dr. Jonathan Chase (Manimal)

In the short-lived science-fiction TV show from the 1980s, Manimal, Simon MacCorkindale stars as Dr. Jonathan Chase, who possesses the ability to shapeshift into any animal of his choosing. He uses this power to help the police solve crimes.

Lampwick (Pinocchio)

In one of the most terrifying scenes from Disney's animated 1940 adaptation of Pinocchio, the sentient marionette befriends a troublemaker named Lampwick, who suffers the same fate as all boys who are sent to Pleasure Island and transforms into a donkey. One wild movie fan theory suggests that this is what happened to Eddie Murphy's character from Shrek.

Sabrina Spellman (Sabrina The Teenage Witch)

Melissa Joan Hart's young, eponymous spellcaster from Sabrina the Teenage Witch turned into an animal various times during the ABC fantasy sitcom's run. Her transformations would either be by her own doing or through a strange situation that she would need to figure out how to reverse.

Thomas P. Johnson (Fluke)

Fluke is an interesting movie about reincarnation, considering the main character is not resurrected into a new human body, but that of a dog. The 1995 film stars Matthew Modine as a selfish, workaholic family man who, after his untimely death, wakes up as Fluke, a dog named after his own breed, and struggles to reconnect with his family.

Wonder Woman (Justice League Unlimited)

In one of the weirder episodes of Justice League Unlimited, called "This Little Piggy," Wonder Woman (Susan Eisenberg) is turned into a swine by Circe (Rachel York). In order to turn her back, Batman (legendary Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy) must show an act of love toward her, and does so by serenading her at a club.

Meilin "Mei" Lee (Turning Red)

Roaslie Chiang voices the Chinese-Canadian teen Mei in the 2022 Pixar film, Turning Red, which is noted for its clever allusions to the struggles of female adolescence. The title refers to the unusual effects of a family curse that causes Mei to transform into a large Red Panda when she becomes flustered with strong emotions.

Thackery Binks (Hocus Pocus)

I don't think there is a single character from 1993's Hocus Pocus who has it worse than Thackery Binks (played in human form by Sean Murray and later voiced by Jason Marsden). Right after they drain the youth and life from his sister, Emily (Amanda Shepherd), the Sanderson Sisters (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy) curse the 17th-century boy with both the form of a black cat and eternal life.

Wallace Bryton (Tusk)

In writer and director Kevin Smith's absurdly quirky, but deeply unsettling 2014 A24 horror movie, Tusk, Justin Long plays an arrogant podcast host who is transformed into a walrus. Instead of by some strange witchcraft, the metamorphosis is achieved through a surgical procedure and psychological conditioning orchestrated against his will by a crazed former sailor played by Michael Parks.

Akio And Yūko (Spirited Away)

One of the most acclaimed Studio Ghibli films is Hayao Miyazaki's 2001 fantasy adventure, Spirited Away, in which young Chihiro finds herself trapped in a mystical realm where her parents are turned into pigs after greedily eating a feast not meant for them.

Queen Elinor (Brave)

In Pixar's Oscar-winning animated fantasy epic, Brave, Princess Merida (Kelly Macdonald) must rely on her boldness and her impeccable archery skills to find a cure for a curse that has turned her mother, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), into a bear.

Bob (The Lobster)

Yorgos Lanthimos' 2016 satirical fantasy The Lobster takes place in a dystopian society in which romantic partnerships are mandatory, and anyone still single by a certain time is required to be surgically transformed into the animal of their choosing. The recently divorced David (Colin Farrell) attends a retreat intended to help him find a mate, where he is accompanied by a dog, who is actually his brother, Bob, who "did not make it" through the same program.

Irena Gallier (Cat People)

Based on a 1942 horror movie classic of the same name, director Paul Schrader's 1982 thriller Cat People stars Nastassja Kinski and Malcolm McDowell as descendants of a people who turn into panthers after engaging in steamy encounters. The only way to revert back to their human form, however, is to commit murder.

Buffy Summers (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

In a Season 2 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the teen paranormal activity hunter (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) is accidentally transformed into a rat after her friend, Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon), botches a spell.

Debbie Stevens (A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master)

Technically, teen athlete Debbie Stevens (Brooke Theiss) experiences a transformation into a cockroach before she is caught and crushed by Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) in a dream sequence from the fourth A Nightmare on Elm Street movie. Then again, however, the burned boogeyman kills a victim from within their subconscious becomes how they die in reality, so I'll count it.

Benjamin Browning (Oh! Heavenly Dog)

In 1980's Oh! Heavenly Dog, Chevy Chase plays a recently deceased private investigator named Ben Browning who is given the chance to be sent back to Earth to solve his own murder case. However, he is reincarnated not in human form but in the body of a dog played by Benjean, who is the daughter of the original canine actor who played Benji, Higgins.

Peter Pettigrew (The Harry Potter Movies)

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Ron Weasley discovers that his pet rat, Scabbers, has been a disguised servant of Voldemort named Peter Pettigrew, played by Timothy Spall, the entire time.

Wart (The Sword In The Stone)

In Disney's 1963 animated fantasy film, The Sword in the Stone, Wart (voiced by Rickie Sorensen), the boy who would be King Arthur, is mentored by the powerful wizard, Merlin (Karl Swenson), through a series of lessons that involve being transformed into various animals, including fish and squirrels.

Edmond (Rock-A-Doodle)

In Don Bluth's 1991 animated musical fantasy, Rock-a-Doodle, an 8-year-old farm boy named Edmond (Toby Scott Ganger) is magically transformed into a cat by the Grand Duke of Owls (Christopher Plummer), leading him to seek the help of an anthropomorphic, singing rooster named Chanticleer (Glenn Campbell).

Luke Eveshim (The Witches)

In the 1990 not-so-scary witch movie based on Roald Dahl's novel, The Witches (which is still pretty traumatizing for younger audiences), young Luke Eveshim (Jasen Fisher) is caught spying on a group of malevolent spellcasters who punish him by turning him into a mouse.

Sheena (Sheena)

Tanya Roberts stars in the 1984 film, Sheena, which later spawned a series adaptation in the early 2000s, as an orphaned woman raised in the jungle since she was a child by a mystical woman who taught her the skill of shape-shifting into various wild beasts.

The Kids From DinoSquad (DinoSquad)

One might say that the unofficial animated companion to Animorphs is a short-lived series called DinoSquad, which brings back animals from a bit further back in Earth's history. Airing from 2007 to 2008, the show followed a group of teens who fight crime with their ability to transform into prehistoric creatures.

Tom Brand (Nine Lives)

Nine Lives is one of those movies in which a selfish workaholic who never has enough time for his family is transformed into an animal so he can learn how to be a better version of his human self. The 2016 comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld stars Kevin Spacey as the animalistic metamorphosis victim in question, who is turned into a cat by an eccentric pet shop owner played by Christopher Walken.

Eddie McDowd (100 Deeds For Eddie McDowd)

The underrated Nickelodeon TV show 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd is about a young troublemaker (voiced by Seth Green), who is transformed into a dog by a mystical drifter (played by Richard Moll). Before he can return to his human form, Eddie must complete 100 redemptive tasks, with help from the last kid he bullied (played by Brandon Gilberstadt), who is also the only one he can speak to, which is why he ends up adopting him into his family.

Some moviegoers are absolutely against, or simply exhausted by, the idea of remaking a classic film or rebooting a hit TV show, and I absolutely sympathize with that, given how many lackluster remakes Hollywood has delivered. However, I am open to the idea of reimagining a beloved title, as long as the new version offers some reason to justify its existence by not simply hitting "copy, paste" and calling it a day. See what I mean by taking a look at some of these cinematic remakes and TV reboots that either surprised audiences with something or at least managed to stand on their own.

Ocean's Eleven (2001)

The Rat Pack-led original Ocean's 11 from 1960, which sees a group of World War II veterans reuniting to rob five Las Vegas casinos in one night, just for fun. Steven Soderbergh's remake reimagines the heist (involving only three casinos in one vault) as Danny Ocean's (George Clooney) act of revenge against casino magnate Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), who is dating his ex-wife, Tess (Julia Roberts).

Teen Wolf (2011-2017)

Instead of following a high school student who inherits a family curse that makes him half-man, half-animal like the 1985 comedy, Teen Wolf, MTV's more earnest series adaptation starred Tyler Posey as a wolf bite victim who ends up using his lycanthropic abilities to protect his community from supernatural forces with the help of his friends, Buffy style

The Invisible Man (2020)

Considered one of the best horror movie remakes ever made is writer and director Leigh Whannell's reinterpretation of the classic Universal Monster Movie, The Invisible Man. The acclaimed Blumhouse thriller introduces a more plausible explanation for the eponymous villain's transparency and tells the story from the perspective of the victim, his tormented wife (played by Elisabeth Moss), resulting in a powerful and frightening commentary on gaslit abuse victims.

Westworld (2016-2022)

Michael Crichton's 1973 film Westworld was almost a precursor to Jurassic Park, taking place at a high-tech tourist attraction with an Old West aesthetic and highly realistic androids that go haywire. Decades later, an acclaimed HBO drama of the same name would expand on the concept in much darker, timely, and thought-provoking ways.

Scarface (1983)

Howard Hawks' 1932 gangster drama Scarface follows an Italian immigrant (played by Paul Muni) who rises to power in Chicago's criminal underworld. Director Brian DePalma's 1983 classic, which many may not realize is a remake, follows a Cuban immigrant (played by Al Pacino) and his rise to power in Miami's criminal underworld.

War Of The Worlds (2005)

There has never been a truly faithful adaptation of H.G. Wells' seminal novel, but the two best-known alien invasion movies it inspired could not be more different from one another. The 1953 version follows various residents of a California town and shows things from a governmental perspective, while Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds is told entirely from the point of view of a divorced father (played by Tom Cruise) and his two children as they travel the country searching for sanctuary. The remake even subverts expectations by having the evil extraterrestrials rise from the ground as opposed to coming down from the sky.

The Mummy (1999)

Universal's 1932 monster movie, The Mummy, starring Boris Karloff, is an undisputed classic of the studio's seminal creature feature era. When the story was updated in the late '90s, it took a more action-adventure approach, with Brendan Fraser leading the cast as a stand-in for Indiana Jones.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997-2003)

Joss Whedon took the basic premise of his screenplay for the 1992 Kristy Swanson-led horror-comedy movie, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and revamped it (no pun intended) as a more earnest monster-of-the-week thriller, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as the teen monster hunter, that became a cultural phenomenon.

A Star Is Born (1976)

Bradley Cooper's Oscar-winning 2018 directorial debut, A Star is Born, is a wonderful achievement in spite of its many similarities to the late '70s hit of the same name starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. However, that film is a wholly original take on two other synonymous dramas that came before it in 1937 and 1954, both of which revolve around the movie business instead of the music industry.

Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)

The main differentiator between Glen A. Larson's classic '70s sci-fi series, Battlestar Galactica, and Ronald D. Moore's SyFy original reimagining is how it drops the campy tone. However, the contrast is unquestionably dramatic, resulting in one of the most celebrated cosmic TV shows of its time, or any time, and a benchmark for reboots done right.

The Thing (1982)

It is almost cheating to refer to John Carpenter's classic horror movie, The Thing, about an Arctic research crew that can't tell who among them is a shapeshifting alien, as a remake. It could more accurately be described as a far more faithful adaptation of its source material, a novella called "Who Goes There?" than producer Howard Hawks' 1951 thriller, The Thing from Another World, which is a relatively by-the-numbers creature feature.

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina (2018-2020)

Archie Comics character Sabrina Spellman became a household name when Melissa Joan Hart portrayed her on the very lighthearted ABC sitcom, Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Years later, Netflix released Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, in which star Kiernan Shipka's iteration faces mystical situations of a far graver matter.

The Nutty Professor (1996)

In the original The Nutty Professor from 1963, Jerry Lewis plays the clumsy, unsophisticated, but brilliant Julius Kelp, who develops a serum that alters his personality, creating a more suave and well-kept alter ego he calls Buddy Love. In director Tom Shadyac's remake, Eddie Murphy plays the perfectly sophisticated, but vastly overweight Sherman Klump, whose revolutionary serum initially serves as a temporary, instant weight loss solution, and his thinner self, also named Buddy Love, eventually begins to take on his own persona over time.

The Magnificent Seven (1960)

Many of the best Western movies are reimaginings of classic Japanese action films. One of the best-known examples of this is The Magnificent Seven, which is merely an Americanized update of Seven Samurai, which trades swordfights for gunfights.

Pete’s Dragon (2015)

Co-writer and director David Lowery did not bother rewatching 1977's Pete's Dragon, which follows the friendship between an orphaned boy and a mystical creature that can turn itself invisible. He updated the Disney film into something that is not a musical nor a broad comedy, and goes for a more dramatic, atmospheric fantasy adventure for all ages, with great results.

Bel-Air (2022)

The classic NBC comedy The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air stars Will Smith as a young man taken out of his Philadelphia neighborhood to live with his wealthy California relatives after a violent encounter. This premise worked well as the set-up for a sitcom, but is also well-suited for a drama, as demonstrated in Morgan Cooper's 2019 short film that became the basis for Peacock's darker reimagining, Bel-Air, from producer Smith and starring Jabari Banks.

The Fly (1986)

The original 1958 adaptation of George Langelaan's short story, The Fly, involves an instantaneous transportation experiment gone wrong when an insect gets in the machine, causing a scientist (played by David Hedison) to come out the other end with a fly's head and arm. David Cronenberg's reimagining takes that same transportation device setup, but Jeff Goldblum's Seth Brundle comes out the other end seemingly fine, before his body slowly begins to deteriorate as a result of his DNA being fused with the fly.

Beetlejuice (1989-1991)

The animated series adaptation of 1988's beloved Tim Burton movie, Beetlejuice, is still a story told from a ghost's perspective and retains the same one-of-a-kind, maniacally macabre aesthetic. However, it reimagines the title character as a lovably goofy ghoul who, instead of manipulating Lydia Deetz into marriage, makes friends with her and takes her on various wondrous adventures in the afterlife.

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers (1978)

Jack Finney's classic alien invasion story has been adapted into multiple Invasion of the Body Snatchers movies, all of which are really no different in concept, but differ from each other in various stylistic and thematic ways. For instance, the original 1956 film is a commentary on fears of McCarthyism, while director Philip Kaufman's adaptation instead comments on blind consumerism and boasts not just a bleaker ending, but one of the most devastating endings in horror history.

A Fistful Of Dollars (1964)

At the time A Fistful of Dollars was released, few people realized the first installment of director Sergio Leone and star Clint Eastwood's "Man with No Name Trilogy" was a remake. That is because, while the film is a Western-style, beat-for-beat reimagining of the 1961 samurai classic Yojimbo, which is also about a drifter who protects a village by playing two oppressive gangs against each other, Akira Kurosawa never received any credit for inspiring the story, leading production company Toho to file a lawsuit.

RoboCop (2014)

While some might say that José Padilha's RoboCop is a remake that should have never been made, it at least tried to be different in some respects. In particular, Peter Weller's Alex Murphy from the original has almost no memory of his life before becoming a hybrid of man and machine, but the version played by Joel Kinnaman is fully aware of the person he was before and forced to undergo his unusual procedure against his will, which is quite a bit darker.

Dragnet (1987)

One of the first films to honor the bewildering tradition of adapting earnest TV crime dramas into feature-length comedies was director Tom Mankiewicz's Dragnet. This slapstick parody of detective stories is set in the world of Jack Webb's seminal police procedural, featuring Dan Aykroyd as the nephew of Sgt. Joe Friday (who is also named Joe Friday) and Tom Hanks as his partner, Det. Pep Streebek.

Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans (2009)

Director Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, starring Nicolas Cage, boasts an entirely different story from Abel Ferrara's 1992 crime drama, Bad Lieutenant, starring Harvey Keitel, despite also focusing on the exploits of a corrupt cop.

Disturbia (2007)

Director D.J. Caruso's Disturbia is recognized as an unofficial reimagining of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. It stars Shia LaBeouf as a teenage boy who suspects his neighbor is a murderer while confined to his home under house arrest, as opposed to a grown man (played by Jimmy Stewart) recovering from an injury.

Suspiria (2018)

Luca Guadagnino's reimagining of Dario Argento's 1977 Giallo-style supernatural thriller, Suspiria, has the same setting (a German ballet studio run by witches), but has none of the same eye-popping production design, incorporates a tangentially connected detective story B plot, and boasts a bleak twist ending.

Dawn Of The Dead (2004)

While also set in a mall this time, writer James Gunn and director Zack Snyder's take on the second installment of George Romero's revolutionary zombie movie franchise from 1978, Dawn of the Dead, makes the cast bigger, the zombies faster, the comedy more overt, and the subtle satirical nuances non-existent.

Death Race (2008)

Producer Roger Corman's 1975 B-movie Death Race 2000 takes place in a futuristic, totalitarian United States that holds an annual cross-country racing competition in which the object is to run over as many random pedestrians as possible. Paul W.S. Anderson's reimagining softens the dystopian angle, makes the race exclusive to incarcerated convicts on a single island, and challenges the racers to only kill each other, crowning the last person standing.

Velma (2023-2024)

In the HBO Max original animated prequel series, Velma, starring Mindy Kaling in the title role, the meddling kids from Mystery Inc. are nothing like who they used to be. There is also no Scooby-Doo, which was probably the last straw for all the haters.

When A Stranger Calls (2006)

The Camilla Belle-led update of When a Stranger Calls takes the first 20 minutes of the original 1979 suspense thriller, in which a babysitter discovers her unsettling phone calls are coming from inside the house, and extends that to its own 90-minute feature.

Beauty And The Beast (2012-2016)

From 1987 to 1990, CBS aired a modernized, crime drama-style take on the classic fairytale, Beauty and the Beast, depicting a romance between a lion-man living underneath New York City (played by Ron Perlman) and a beautiful ADA (played by Linda Hamilton). When The CW developed its own version, the series dropped the mystical half-man, half-animal creature aspect in favor of making the Beast a normal man who goes feral when angered after being subjected to a government experiment.

Paws Of Fury: The Legend Of Hank (2022)

The original title of the animated comedy Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, about a dog who becomes an unlikely hero to a village of cats, was Blazing Samurai, to reflect how Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles served as its structural inspiration.

Mockingbird Lane (2012)

Mockingbird Lane, which aired on NBC as a Halloween special, was developer Bryan Fuller's failed attempt at reimagining the spooky, silly sitcom The Munsters into a modern supernatural dramedy.

Despite running for an incredible 15 seasons, Supernatural was still wildly popular, and almost certainly could have kept going for at least another couple of seasons if the stars had the will to continue. Whatever they end up doing in their careers, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki will all but certainly be known for this show above all others.

And considering how frequently popular TV shows from years gone by get remade, rebooted, or straight up revived, one has to wonder if such a thing will be possible here. Andrew Dabb, the showrunner for the final three seasons of the show, tells TV Insider that in his mind, it’s not even a question of if, simply when. Debb said…

The man has a point. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is getting a reboot. That's a show that, while still incredibly popular, seemed incredibly unlikely to return, especially with Sarah Michelle Gellar involved. And yet, it's happening. If Buffy can come back, it can happen to anybody.

While the Supernatural finale left things in a good, though divisive, place, as Andrew Dabb says, there’s nothing in that ending that prevents a new adventure from popping up for Sam and Dean. Besides, when God is a potential character, nothing is off the table. There are still plenty of supernatural monsters, angels, and demons who could be at the center of a new story. Dabb even comes up with an opening scene, seemingly from the top of his head. Dabb suggested…

While there may be better or worse ideas for an opening, a setup like that would certainly be intriguing. The real question of whether or not a revival would work would likely be answered in the scenes that followed, explaining just what was going on.

Dabb is almost certainly correct in his basic assessment, that at some point, in some form, Supernatural will return. Whether the two main stars are part of it or not, and whether bringing it back is even a good idea, will only be determined once somebody decides that it’s time to bring it back. Although, since it’s only been five years since the show wrapped up its run, that day is probably still at least a little ways off.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the best teen dramas ever IMO, and had a full-blown cinematic universe when it was airing alongside the spinoff Angel. The latter series (which is streaming with a Hulu subscription) started with a small regular cast, including Charisma Carpenter as scene-stealer Cordelia Chase. Ahead of the upcoming Buffy reboot, the actress reflected on her character's "unjust" death, and the idea of returning to that role.

Fans were thrilled when it as confirmed that a pilot for a Buffy reboot starring Sarah Michelle Gellar was in the works. Fans are wondering what other Buffy actors might pop up, especially after SMG expressed interest in bringing back dead characters. When speaking with IGN, Carpenter addressed this possibility, offering:

As a superfan I can say she wasn't wrong. Cordelia was possessed throughout much of Season 4, which is the final entry where Carpenter was a series regular. She eventually returned for one episode in the fifth and final season, where it was revealed that she'd finally died after being in a coma. While audiences were excited to get one more episode with the beloved character, it was a rather unceremonious way for her to go.

Fans have hypothesized that Cordelia's ending might have been due to interpersonal issues. Carpenter came out against creator/showrunner Joss Whedon, accusing him of abusing his power and verbally harassing her. So the idea of getting more of the beloved Sunnydale High alum is definitely an exciting one.

Later in that same interview, Charisma Carpenter spoke more about the idea of coming back for the possible Buffy reboot, her character's death on the spinoff. In her words:

Let's keep our fingers crossed, fans! If we're bringing back beloved Buffy legacy figures, you know that Cordelia would give us all the sass that we need. And dead characters have come back various times throughout both the flagship series and Angel.

While not in live-action, Charisma Carpenter recently got to play Cordelia Chase thanks to the Audible series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. This story used the concept of the multiverse to bring back dead characters, including a variant of Cordelia that became the Slayer instead of Buffy.

Of course, Hulu is going to have to actually green lit a full Buffy reboot if we're ever expected to see what happened in the pilot and beyond. Only time will tell if this happens, but there's certainly fan interest thanks to the return of Sarah Michelle Gellar as the title role.

Both Angel and Buffy are streaming in their entirety on Hulu. While the reboot isn't expected as part of the 2025 TV schedule, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic that we'll get a new season of episodes.

Some might argue that a scene from a film or TV series that turns out to have existed all in a character’s head is a cop out. Maybe that’s true in some respects, but when done right and without misleading intentions, dream sequences can be used as a great opportunity to let artists run wild with their imaginations, resulting in some of a title’s most memorable moments. Here are some of the most wonderfully surreal scenes from the big and small screen that may have had you questioning if you had entered dreamland.

Dawn Haunts Renton (Trainspotting)

Director Danny Boyle's 1996 adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel Trainspotting follows a group of Scottish addicts trying to get clean, none of whom has a harder time with it than Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor). One signature scene sees him locked in his childhood bedroom by his parents and forced to wean off his habit cold turkey, during which he suffers an intense fever dream featuring hallucinations of his parents on a game show, his various friends, and the spirit of a deceased infant he once knew climbing on his ceiling.

Bruce Wayne's Alternate Life (Batman: The Animated Series)

One of the best episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, let alone one of the strangest, is "Perchance to Dream." As part of a scheme by Mad Hatter, Bruce Wayne finds himself living in a fantasy in which his parents were never murdered, he is engaged to Selina Kyle, and someone other than him is protecting the streets of Gotham as Batman.

Sarah's Apocalyptic Nightmare (Terminator 2: Judgment Day)

One thing that makes the classic sci-fi movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day one of the all-time greatest sequels is the way it depicts Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and her growth as a character following the traumatic events of the first film, especially through one wild fantasy sequence. In the dream, she witnesses her happier past self and other bystanders at a park where they suffer a nuclear blast that ends up burning off her skin, leaving her remaining skeleton clinging to a chain-link fence.

All Of Season 9 (Dallas)

Dallas delivered one of the craziest retcons in TV history when it was revealed that the death of Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) and the entire ninth season of the hit primetime soap opera all happened in the head of his wife, Pamela (Victoria Principal). The retcon was prompted after Duffy, who had previously left the show, agreed to return for Season 10, which opens with Pamela waking up to find Bobby in the shower.

Happy's Happy Place (Happy Gilmore)

The classic golf movie, 1996's Happy Gilmore, stars Adam Sandler in the title role of a guy with a talent for tee time, but the rage of a hockey player, which his trainer, Chubbs (Carl Weathers), tries to help him control by envisioning his own "happy place." He imagines his girlfriend, Virginia (Julie Bowen), carrying drink pitchers, his grandmother (Frances Bay) finding the money she needs from a slot machine, and a little cowboy riding an old-fashioned bicycle, for some reason. However, a later attempt to escape into this fantasy world is interrupted by the invasion of his nemesis, Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald).

The Solomons Suffer From Bizarre Dreams (3rd Rock From The Sun)

The two-part Season 2 finale of 3rd Rock from the Sun tried something unique by airing in 3D, but saving that format for some incredibly insane sequences. The surreal, avant garde scenes are dreams that Dick (John Lithgow) and the rest of his extra-terrestrial comrades are experiencing, but for the first time since taking human form, which leads them to assume they are ill.

Old Blue Saves The Day (A Christmas Story)

The classic holiday movie, 1983's A Christmas Story, follows young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) and his devotion to making sure he finds an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle under the tree. He seems to believe that it will make his life better, based on a daydream in which he, dressed as a hero named Old Blue, uses the BB shooter to rescue his family from criminals.

The Opening Scene (8 1/2)

Federico Fellini's signature 1963 film opens with a bizarre dream in which the main character gets trapped in his smoke-filled car in full-stop, literal bumper-to-bumper traffic. After he finally escapes, it cuts to him flying through the clouds until he is pulled down by his ankle by a person on a beach, and descends into the water just as he awakens.

Gutterballs (The Big Lebowski)

There are two great dream sequences from Joel and Ethan Coen's hilarious, classic '90s movie, 1998's The Big Lebowski, the first of which sees The Dude (Jeff Bridges) flying over L.A. trying to reach his stolen rug after receiving a crack on the jaw. However, the more memorable scene sees him, after being sedated by Jackie Treehorn, imagining he is the star of a Busby Berkeley-inspired adult film about bowling.

The Entire Series (Newhart)

One of the most iconic, oft-parodied, and simply best TV series finales is that of Newhart, in which the actor and comedian wakes up in bed as Bob Hartley, his role from his first hit sitcom, The Bob Newhart Show. His co-star from said 1970s hit, Suzanne Pleshette, wakes up next to him as Hartley's wife, Emily, and he explains to her that his entire life as Vermont innkeeper Dick Loudon was a dream.

Rosemary Drifts On A Mattress (Rosemary's Baby)

Some of the best horror movies include a dream sequence that sneaks up on you with its more nightmarish qualities, such as in 1968's Rosemary's Baby. The first half of Rosemary's (Mia Farrow) dream is somewhat peaceful, showing her lying on a mattress floating on a bed of water, but in the second half of the dream, she is attacked by a demon. To make matters worse, that occurrence might not be part of the dream at all.

Buffy's Slaying Is A Delusion? (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

Sarah Michelle Gellar's title hero from Buffy the Vampire Slayer has likely wished that her life could be free of encounters with bloodsuckers, demons, and all kinds of things that go bump in the night, but she probably never wanted to experience it the way she does in Season 6's "Normal Again." Buffy becomes exposed to a demonic, hallucinogenic venom that causes her to become trapped in a fantasy in which she is a mental patient, and her life of fighting paranormal activity has been all in her head.

Nazi Werewolves (An American Werewolf In London)

Writer and director John Landis' An American Werewolf in London boasts one of the most incredible moments of body horror in cinematic history, but one could argue a crazier moment in the classic werewolf movie happens earlier. While recovering from his animal attack, David (David Naughton) dreams he is back in the States with his family when a group of gun-toting, lycanthropic SS soldiers invade.

Tony Becomes A Salesman (The Sopranos)

Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) experienced multiple, eye-opening dream sequences throughout HBO's run of The Sopranos, including one that took place during most of an entire episode. In Season 6's "Join the Club," a comatose Tony dreams of an alternate life away from the DiMeo Family in which he is an ordinary salesman named Kevin Finnerty.

The Clown Hospital (Pee-wee's Big Adventure)

A movie scene that scared many '80s kids occurs in Pee-wee's Big Adventure when the titular man-child (played by Paul Reubens) has a nightmare about his missing bike. The prized, two-wheel vehicle is picked up in scraps by a group of horrifying harlequins who use unconventional and concerning methods to put it back together again.

Adam's Repeated Death Row Sentence (The Twilight Zone)

All of the best episodes of The Twilight Zone feel like a dream (or a nightmare), but Season 2's "Shadow Play" actually takes place entirely in one. Dennis Weaver stars as a convicted criminal trying to convince the other characters that his condemnation is merely part of a recurring nightmare.

Sue Visits Carrie's Grave (Carrie)

Director Brian de Palma's 1976 adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie ends with one of the most iconic and influential jump scares, which actually inspired the ending of 1980's Friday the 13th. A grieving Sue Snell (Amy Irving) dreams that she is visiting the resting place of her titular telekinetic classmate (Sissy Spacek) where her bloodied arm emerges from the ground and grasps onto her. Sue does not wake up from the nightmare, but is unable to stop screaming in her sleep.

Cooper's First Visit To The Red Room (Twin Peaks)

Most of David Lynch's movies and TV projects feel like long dream sequences, but when depicting Special Agent Dale Cooper's (Kyle MacLachlan) nightmare about the Red Room in an early episode of Twin Peaks, the master of surrealism really goes for it, resulting in a dream sequence more authentic than most. The inexplicably aged-up Coop meets a dancing little person who tells him, in backwards speak, "That gum you like is going to come back in style." He then meets a blonde woman resembling Laura Palmer (played by Sheryl Lee) and asks if she is the murdered teen, to which she responds, also in backwards speak, "I feel like I know her, but sometimes my arms bend back."

Lloyd And Mary's Romance (Dumb And Dumber)

In the 1994 Jim Carrey movie favorite, Dumb and Dumber, while traveling to Aspen, Lloyd Christmas (Carrey) fantasizes that his crush, Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly), will fall for him immediately after he returns her missing briefcase. The daydream continues to show highlights of their imaginary relationship, from a party where Lloyd entertains guests with uproarious tricks (like lighting his flatus on fire), to a romantic dinner where he engages in a cinematic-style kung fu fight.

Elliott '90s Sitcom Fantasy (Mr. Robot)

A top-rated Season 2 of Mr. Robot called "eps2.4_m4ster-s1ave.aes" is depicted predominantly in the style of '90s sitcom and even features a cameo by ALF. However, it is later revealed that this laugh-track-filled fantasy is Elliott's (Rami Malek) dream, and that he has been asleep in a hospital after being violently beaten by Ray Heyworth's (Craig Robinson) goons.

Beauty School Dropout (Grease)

In the 1978 movie musical Grease, Frenchie (Didi Conn) is encouraged to put her cosmetology career on hold and go back to high school by an unexpected person, Frankie Avalon, with a dreamy number called "Beauty School Dropout.'

Kevin Becomes An Assassin (The Leftovers)

In Season 2 of The Leftovers, Kevin (Justin Theroux) is told by Virgil (Steven Williams) that the only way to cure his persistent visions of cult leader Patti Levin (Ann Dowd) is to take his own life. This sends him into a bewildering reality in which he is a contract killer assigned to kill Patti, who is a presidential candidate.

Ronnie Births A Maggot (The Fly)

At one point in the tragic romantic thriller that is David Cronenberg's 1986 remake of The Fly, Ronnie (Geena Davis) discovers she is pregnant with the child of Dr. Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum), who has been transforming into a half-man, half-insect at this time. Her fear of what could be growing inside of her is personified in a nightmare in which, instead of a human baby, she gives birth to a giant larva.

Jeff Lives A G.I. Joe Fantasy (Community)

The best episodes of Community experiment with different genres, such as the time the series put the cast in the world of the '80s-era beloved animated series, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. The action-packed, cartoon setting of "G.I. Jeff" is revealed to be a fantasy Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) has created to cope with turning 40.

Henry Loses His Head (Eraserhead)

In Eraserhead, Henry (Jack Nantz) has a nightmare in which his head falls off his neck, where a new head resembling his mutant child pops out to replace it. Of course, this dream sequence is no more bizarre than anything else that happens in David Lynch's perplexing 1977 debut feature.

Rob Suspects There Is An Alien Invasion (The Dick Van Dyke Show)

In a classic episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show called “It May Look Like a Walnut,” Rob Petrie (Van Dyke) watches an alien invasion movie involving extraterrestrial walnuts and otherworldly visitors without thumbs. The next day, his life begins to resemble the film's plot, until he wakes up that night to discover it was all a dream.

Wayne Meets Jim Morrison (Wayne's World 2)

The plot of the hit 1993 SNL movie Wayne's World 2, in which Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) put on their own concert, is set in motion when Wayne dreams he is in a desert where he meets the spirit of The Doors frontman, Jim Morrison (Michael Nickles).

Frasier Is Visited By Sigmund Freud (Frasier)

In the Season 4 Frasier episode "The Impossible Dream," the eponymous therapist and radio host (played by Kelsey Grammer) has a suggestive dream about his effeminate colleague, Gil Chesterson (Edward Hibbert). He eventually determines the dream is no more than a task his subconscious gave himself to satisfy his currently unchallenging career, but the episode ends with an even more confusing nighttime encounter with his idol, Sigmund Freud, who joins him in his bed and implies a request for intimacy.

In 1989's The 'Burbs, family man Ray (Tom Hanks) initially refuses to believe that his neighbors could actually be the murderous cult that other locals suspect they are. Arnold Schwarzenegger playing a man who becomes pregnant is a pretty intriguing concept on its own. However, things get especially bizarre in 1994's Junior when the actor's character dreams that he has given birth to the spitting image of himself.

D.J.'s SAT Disaster (Full House)

In a Season 6 episode of Full House, D.J. Tanner's (Candace Cameron Bure) stress over the upcoming SATs culminates in a nightmare in which Wheel of Fortune's Vanna White appears to inform her that she has failed the test and will go to Clown University.

A return to Sunnydale is imminent thanks to the much-anticipated Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. After the February confirmation that a new Buffy series with Sarah Michelle Gellar is moving forward, the excitement and amount of speculation have only grown. After Gellar herself revealed the new Slayer to be Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she’s revealing one dream she has for the reboot, and I have mixed feelings about it.

There still isn’t too much known about the new Buffy reboot, but there have been a lot of theories and lists of dos and don’ts, including some aspects from the OG that need to be included. However, Gellar did talk at the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival (via Vanity Fair) about how the reboot will be different from the original series, and honestly, I both love and hate the idea she's really hoping to see.As she put it:

Due to its supernatural nature, Buffy the Vampire Slayer could get pretty dark and deadly with its storyline, making it currently one of the best horror shows streaming on Hulu. It certainly kept viewers on the edge of their seats, wondering who was living, dying and returning. Since Gellar is hoping the creative team can find ways to bring back characters who died, fans can likely look forward to seeing at least SOME favorites when the story kicks off anew.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a pretty big deal when it aired in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, and society was a whole lot different then. Gellar is hoping the reboot will bring the Scooby Gang into the modern era, and adapts its story to be as contemporary to today's viewers as the original was to O.G. audiences. Although the way she words it could mean anything:

Regardless of whether other original stars are possibly joining Gellar in the new show, it can be expected that there will be some differences between the original and the reboot, along with some similarities. The pilot will be directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao and written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, so if anyone sees them suddenly following former Buffy stars on social media, break out the theory hats!

More information about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot should be coming out over the next several months, but fans should expect some major differences when Ryan Kiera Armstrong makes her debut as the newest slayer. In the meantime, all seven seasons of Buffy are streaming with a Hulu subscription.

I think I speak for many when I say audiences love it when characters from two (or more) different movies or TV series come together in one special event, such as the epic monster movies featuring both Godzilla and King Kong, or when Scooby-Doo and Mystery Inc. appeared on Supernatural. Of course, for all of the mind-blowing crossovers we have been blessed with, there is still much to be desired in the realm of bringing two big-screen or small-screen franchises together.

In that respect, let’s let our imaginations run wild and dream up the movie or TV crossovers that would be incredible to see. Now, I cannot promise that many (or all) of these ideas are legally or even humanly possible, but why should we let that get in the way of the fun?

Toy Story And Small Soldiers

The first, and still one of the best, Pixar movies, Toy Story, showed us the world from the point of view of sentient toys in 1995. Three years later, Small Soldiers offered the same perspective, but with more of an edge and a more realistic approach. Seeing Woody (Tom Hanks) and other innocent children's playthings crossing paths with Major Chip Hazard (Tommy Lee Jones) and his AI-powered, militaristic action figures sounds like one wonderfully warped animated flick, if you ask me.

The Office And Parks And Recreation

As recalled by MovieWeb, co-creators Michael Schur and Greg Daniels initially conceived Parks and Recreation as a spin-off of The Office before it turned into its own separate and equally beloved TV sitcom. Still, there is no reason why Michael Scott (Steve Carell) and his former Dunder-Mifflin co-workers could not somehow cross paths with Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and other Pawnee residents in a mockumentary-style special.

Drive And Fast And Furious

A famous example of misleading movie marketing is 2011's slow-burn, Neo-noir thriller Drive, which one woman assumed would be more of a high-octane action thriller like the Fast and Furious movies, inspiring her to file a lawsuit, according to The Guardian. Honestly, I see this as a reason to give the people what they want and release a movie that sees Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew facing off against Ryan Gosling's Driver.

Succession And Yellowstone

Having both premiered in 2018, Jesse Armstrong's Succession and Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone would become subjects of comparison, with some even calling the Paramount Network hit "Succession with cowboy hats." I think seeing the wealthy and vindictive Roys indulging in a rivalry with the also wealthy and vindictive Duttons would make for one epic feature-length special or miniseries.

21 Jump Street And Men In Black

Among the hypothetical crossovers presented here, not all are too much of a stretch from the realm of possibility. In fact, there were actual plans for a film called MIB23, which would have brought Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) from the 21 Jump Street movie into the world of the Men in Black franchise. Unfortunately, plans were scrapped in 2019, but I still have hope this insane sci-fi/comedy mash-up could work.

Poker Face And The Thing

Imagine if human lie detector Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) from the Peacock original TV show Poker Face was trapped in one place with a group of people who may or may not be shapeshifting extraterrestrial organisms in disguise, like the 1982 horror movie classic, The Thing. She would be the only one who could suss out the imitators, but the rest of the group might be too paranoid to confidently trust her judgment. I think Rian Johnson should give John Carpenter a call.

Star Wars And Marvel Cinematic Universe

As a fan of both the Star Wars movies and of Guardians of the Galaxy, I love the idea of seeing the cosmic warriors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe visit George Lucas' galaxy far, far away. Considering both Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm are owned by Disney, this intergalactic epic is entirely possible, as long as the timeline is respected, of course.

RoboCop And Terminator

Omni Consumer Products' half-man, half-machine crime-fighting tool has crossed paths with Skynet's mechanical killer before, but only on the pages of a Dark Horse comic book series from Frank Miller. Why Hollywood has not yet tried its hand at a movie that pits the hero from RoboCop against any of the antagonistic cyborgs from the Terminator franchise is beyond me.

James Bond And Jason Bourne

The Matt Damon-led Jason Bourne movies are often cited as the inspiration for the James Bond franchise's grittier tone, especially after Daniel Craig took over as 007. If there could be a way to get the American amnesiac assassin and the suave MI6 agent together in a room (which would likely be destroyed by the end), that could make for one of the best spy movies ever.

Sherlock And Doctor Who

Two of the BBC's most popular series, Sherlock and Doctor Who, both involve a highly intelligent, fashionable, and sometimes arrogant protagonist who is accompanied by a reliable companion. For that and many other reasons, I think it would be amazing to see them come together in a special or miniseries in which Holmes, hitting a wall with a case that defies logic, finds unexpected help from The Doctor.

DC Universe And Marvel Cinematic Universe

The two biggest comic book publishing companies in the world have not always been rivals and have indulged in creating stories that see DC heroes and Marvel heroes fighting side by side. Considering his strong ties to the MCU, it can't be out of the question for DC Studios head James Gunn to at least call a meeting with Kevin Feige to discuss bringing this kind of crossover to the big screen, which might end up being the greatest superhero movie ever made.

John Wick And Kill Bill

While largely differing in tone, the John Wick movies and Quentin Tarantino's two-part Kill Bill saga are pretty similar in concept, following two retired, legendary assassins waging a vengeful war on those who wronged them. Who is to say that Keanu Reeves' gun-fu master and Uma Thurman's The Bride never crossed paths in their deadly heyday?

The Evil Dead And The Exorcist

Two of the most popular franchises of demonic possession movies, The Exorcist and The Evil Dead, could not be more different from one another, which is exactly why I want to see them converge. In my pitch, grown-up Regan MacNeill's (Linda Blair) expertise in devilish activity is enlisted to help with a new case, but when it spirals out of control, the only one who can help is chainsaw-headed Deadite hunter, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell).

Inception And A Nightmare On Elm Street

When you think about it, Leonardo DiCaprio's Dom Cobb from Christopher Nolan's Inception essentially has the same job as Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare on Elm Street. Just imagine how much more challenging his team's adventures through the subconscious would be with Robert Englund's sadistic, badly burned boogeyman invading the same dream.

Alien, Predator, And Jurassic Park

You know what I think the Alien vs. Predator movies were missing? Dinosaurs. Putting these two fearsome extraterrestrials in yet another battle, but while trapped on one of the prehistoric animal-infested islands from the Jurassic Park films, could result in one of the most exciting entries from any of these franchises. You would not even need human characters to make it work because seeing both the Predator and the Xenomorph knocked down a peg by the T-Rex as a common enemy would be more than enough.

Ghostbusters And Casper

We already know that Casper and the Ghostbusters exist in the same universe, thanks to Dan Aykroyd's cameo as Ray Stantz in the Friendly Ghost's 1995 live-action feature adaptation of the animated series. I am sure Casper would happily help the paranormal exterminators take on a few evil spirits, even after an awkward misunderstanding were to happen when they first meet.

Mad Max And Dredd

The great thing about post-apocalyptic movies is that each has a different, intriguing interpretation of what a dystopian society would look like. However, what if the Wasteland from George Miller's Mad Max movies existed just across the (dried up) pond from Mega City One in Dredd? The gritty, visually stunning possibilities are endless.

Blade And Twilight

Allow me to make one thing clear: I am not suggesting that Marvel Comics' vampire hunter, originally played on the big screen by Wesley Snipes, should show up in the Twilight movies just to see Robert Pattinson's Edward, Kristen Stewart's Bella, and other bloodsuckers get slaughtered. I actually think Blade's presence could give the persistent haters of the films based on Stephanie Meyer's YA novel series a reason to treat the franchise with a little more respect.

Indiana Jones And Marvel Cinematic Universe

Since Disney owns both Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, I wonder if anyone there has ever tinkered with the idea of putting a character like Indiana Jones in the MCU. I mean, he and Steve "Captain America" Rogers would have been alive around the same time and, as staunch anti-fascists, probably would have gotten along great. I doubt Harrison Ford's casting as Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America: Brave New World would cause much confusion, either.

Monk And Psych

The USA Network used to run promos bringing characters from their respective series together, including one in which Tony Shalhoub's eponymous detective from Monk suspects that Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) is not a real psychic. It makes me wish that we could have seen an official crossover episode that would have seen plenty of funny bickering between the carefree Shawn and someone as neurotic as Adrian Monk, who at least might have gotten along with Gus (Dulé Hill).

Power Rangers And Godzilla

By combining their respective, animal-shaped vehicles into one large Megazord, the Power Rangers have managed to face off against bizarre creatures of all sizes, which means they could realistically take on Godzilla. However, if I were to pitch this crossover, the rangers would eventually have to join forces with the King of the Monsters after an even larger creature emerges to wreak havoc on Angel Grove.

Bill & Ted And Wayne's World

Perhaps we never saw Bill S. Preston Esq. (Alex Winter) and Ted "Theodore" Logan (Keanu Reeves) take Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) on a trip through time because we are not worthy of such an excellent idea. Then again, if Myers and Carvey can still get together for Wayne's World reunions on SNL and Reeves and Winter could come back for 2020's Bill & Ted Face the Music, who says it doesn't have potential?

Dirty Harry And Death Wish

I think the greatest Dirty Harry movie we never saw would have put Clint Eastwood's Lt. Callahan on the case of a murderer targeting the most vicious gangs in San Francisco, which would turn out to be Charles Bronson's Paul Kersey from Death Wish. Inevitably, I think Harry would be lured into an alliance with the vengeful vigilante, coming to believe that his more permanent methods of justice align with his own.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer And Sabrina The Teenage Witch

It's a shame that there was never any attempt to make an official crossover between Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Sarah Michelle Gellar and the Melissa Joan Hart-led Sabrina the Teenage Witch while they were still on the air. The coming-of-age supernatural series may have differed dramatically in tone, but that is just what would have made the collaboration such a blast.

Harry Potter And The Dresden Files

If fans of the Harry Potter movies have ever been interested in trying out something a bit darker and grittier, there is another literary modern-day wizard with the same first name: Harry Dresden, played by Paul Blackthorne on the SyFy series, The Dresden Files. I think it would be fun to see J.K. Rowling's The Boy Who Lived helping author Jim Butcher's Chicago-based P.I. solve a grisly mystery in which magic is involved.

The Munsters And The Addams Family

They may have been on different networks and produced by opposing studios, but how in the world has there never been an attempt to introduce the Munsters to the Addams Family? I would even be open to getting the actors from Rob Zombie's reboot movie to star alongside the cast of Netflix's Wednesday if it meant getting just a glimpse at these creepy, kooky families finally coming together.

It And Terrifier

There are no two villains in the subgenre of creepy clown movies more iconic than Pennywise from It and Art the Clown from Terrifier. I can't imagine a horror fan being against the idea of bringing Bill Skarsgård's shapeshifting fear demon from Andy Muschietti's blockbuster adaptation of Stephen King's novel and David Howard Thornton from Damien Leone's shocking indie slashers together for one brutal showdown that would have blood and white face paint smeared across the screen.

Hocus Pocus And Trick 'R Treat

In Disney's cult favorite, family-friendly witch movie, 1993's Hocus Pocus, our young protagonists go through a lot of trouble to defeat the Sanderson Sisters (played by Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker). I cannot help but wonder how easily those sinister spellcasters could have been taken care of by the mischievous Sam from the 2007 anthology horror movie favorite, Trick 'r Treat.

Hoarders And Storage Wars

You know those people on the show Hoarders who compulsively keep hold of any item they possess, no matter how unnecessary or even unhealthy it may be? I have a potential idea to help them: put them on another A&E reality show called Storage Wars and tell them that they must outbid other experienced collectors if they want to maintain ownership of their junk.

Johnny English And The Pink Panther

While it barely held a candle to Peter Sellers, I cannot deny that I enjoyed Steve Martin's portrayal of Inspector Jacques Clouseau in his Pink Panther reboot. I even more enjoyed Rowan Atkinson as a bumbling Bond-wannabe in the Johnny English movies. I imagine that having the clueless French detective and accident-prone British spy cross paths on a case would result in some real comedic dynamite (especially if real dynamite is involved).

Sister Act And The Nun

After watching Whoopi Goldberg's Academy Award-winning performance in Ghost, I am convinced that a sequel to Sister Act in which Deloris Wilson-Van Cartier must contend with the habit-wearing demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons) from the Conjuring movies would be a riot.

Big Brother And Survivor

Big Brother and Survivor are both competitive reality shows that make social interaction a key element to winning, with the biggest difference being the setting. If I ran CBS, I would send the most famous all-stars from Big Brother to a remote island, bring Survivor champs to the Big Brother house, and see what happens.

You know when some good relationships on television make you want to squeal the moment you see them? Yeah, these are the relationships down below. Sure, we can spend some time watching the best rom-com movies, but what about several seasons of build-up to a relationship that makes it all worthwhile? Here are some couples that define “goals.”

Chandler And Monica (Friends)

Chandler and Monica are the couple from the Friends cast, and I will not be asking any other questions about it at this time. Ross and Rachel were what people talked about, but these two? I love them. They are defined as “goals” based on how much they love each other, even if they didn’t have the typical start. Friends-to-lovers is one of the best.

Ian And Mickey (Shameless)

There was a time when Ian and Mickey were literally all I saw on my Tumblr feed back in the early 2010s. The Shameless cast featured plenty of great relationships, some healthy and others…not so healthy, but Ian and Mickey were a relationship that made it until the end. There’s nothing quite like them.

Rebecca And Jack (This Is Us)

The This Is Us cast defined my time in college when the show was airing, and Jack and Rebecca were the blueprint for how I wanted my future marriage to go. I have never seen two people just so in love with each other on TV, but also portray such a realistic marriage.

Corey And Topanga (Boy Meets World)

I think Corey and Topanga were the couple for the '90s kids. I didn’t grow up watching Boy Meets World, but I know from many that watching these two grow into teenagers and then young adults was one of the best aspects of this series. And honestly, I love that for you.

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Sure, there were moments between Jim and Pam in later seasons that felt a little out of character, but these two were the defining relationship from The Office cast. We were all on the edge of our seats at the beginning of the series when these two were just friends, and we wanted them all to get together.

Leslie And Ben (Parks And Recreation)

Leslie and Ben from the Parks and Recreation cast are the perfect example of a relationship that took its time but blossomed beautifully. Ben was the type of person who always let Leslie shine and never tried to dim her light, which is something that I love about them. They always supported each other no matter what.

Marshall And Lily (How I Met Your Mother)

There have been so many relationships that have come and gone in How I Met Your Mother, but you want to know what one of the best was? Obviously, Marshall and Lily. I don’t think I’ve ever felt as many warm fuzzies as I did watching these two.

Team Stefan and Team Damon? Nah, Elena was always going to pick Damon and me, but Stefan and Caroline? Perfect, excellent. There are absolutely no notes on that couple because, honestly, they were better suited for each other. Sorry.

David And Patrick (Schitt’s Creek)

I’m pretty sure watching David and Patrick in Schitt’s Creek altered my brain chemistry because I don’t think another TV couple has stood out the same as them. The Schitt’s Creek cast is filled with memorable characters, but watching the progression of their relationship throughout its five seasons was something that I will always adore. These two loved each other so much.

Luke And Lorelai (Gilmore Girls)

Look, I know that we’re all here for Team Jess or Team Dean or whoever we’re rooting for with Rory, but to me, as an adult woman now, I like Luke and Lorelai’s relationship a heck of a lot more. It feels more mature, more natural, and less dramatic. Please, give me this rather than the craziness of teenage romance.

Nathan And Haley (One Tree Hill)

The definition of high school sweethearts that somehow worked out. They definitely had their moments of doubt throughout the nine seasons of the show, but these two loved each other so much and ended with a happily married life with two children, which is all you can really ask for in most teen drama romances out there.

Phil And Vivian (The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air)

I’m sure you weren’t expecting to see Phil and Vivian on this list because The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air isn’t really known for its romances. But honestly, Phil and Vivian are the perfect couple. They complement each other perfectly, know when to be each other’s rock or to stop the other from making a poor decision, and took care of Will as well as their biological family in the perfect way. I have no complaints.

Santana And Brittany (Glee)

The Glee cast is filled to the brim with couples, so much so that it’s hard to keep up with them. But my personal favorite was always Santana and Brittany. Not only was their relationship a great stepping stone for many lesbian/bisexual relationships on TV back in 2010, but it’s really one of the few that made it to the very end of the series. “Perfectly imperfect” is a phrase that I still use to this day, ever since Randall uttered it to Beth in This Is Us. These two exemplify what it means to not only marry your best friend, but also marry a partner. They will stand by each other, support each other, and when someone is messing up, they will make them own up to it. There’s no sliding, and that’s what a genuine relationship should be like.

Jess And Nick (New Girl)

New Girl is one of those shows where relationships come and go, but there are always a few that stick the landing for the long haul. Jess and Nick were one of those, and we rooted for them, watching them fall in love, fall apart, and then fall back in love all over again.

Uncle Jesse And Aunt Becky (Full House)

I mean, of course, I have to put Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky. I feel like Full House literally never would have been the same without them. Their relationship started very early on, and it’s always fun to rewatch episodes of the show and watch them fall in love with each other time and time again.

While I do love the specialness of Penelope and Colin and the steaminess of Daphne and Simon, there’s just something about Anthony and Kate that gets me going every time. These two, a classic enemies-to-lovers romance, clearly love each other so much by the time the season ends and Season 3 rolls around.

Claire And Jamie (Outlander)

Outlander, in general, is one of the best Starz shows, but a big reason is Claire and Jamie. Their love has transcended literal timelines. I don’t know how you can get more perfect than that.

Mitch And Cam (Modern Family)

I think when it comes to couples in Modern Family, Mitch and Cam are the perfect example of how two people work so well together, and to the outside, people wonder how the heck they function with how crazy they are. But throughout the several seasons of the show, there’s no denying that these two love each other dearly.

Lucy And Ricky (I Love Lucy)

I can’t have a relationships list without putting the OG’s here. Lucy and Ricky are the definition of “goals.” They were the first people on television to show you how in love with each other they are, no matter the amount of shenanigans that they may put the other through. You can’t get better than these two.

Phil And Claire (Modern Family)

I always see Phil and Claire as the much calmer couple of Modern Family, which is saying something because they still have their fair share of hilarious moments in their household of three kids. But what I love about Phil and Claire is that there is evident respect there, and Phil will support Claire no matter what and stand up for her, while Claire will do the same, regardless of what others think. They’re a team, through and through.

Killian And Emma (Once Upon A Time)

God, there are so many couples in Once Upon a Time, but I think the one we always return to is Killian and Emma. Whether it’s their steamy chemistry or their genuinely emotional story, they are an amazing romance with plenty of fantasy aspects that I just love.

Willow And Tara (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

As someone who loves looking back on legendary relationships that paved the way for others, I know there’s no one better to bring up than Willow and Tara. The couple was a significant landmark for LGBTQ+ representation in television and showed two people who clearly loved each other.

Kev And Veronica (Shameless)

These two were freaky, don’t get me wrong – but they were also freakishly in love with each other. Kev and Veronica stood by each other, and when someone dared to threaten the other, it was on sight. They would fight anyone to protect their love and their relationship, and no matter what, always strived to make time for the other.

Fran And Mr. Sheffield (The Nanny)

I’m pretty sure that if you’ve ever read any rom-com novel, then these two are who you picture when you think of the nanny and the billionaire falling in love. But what I love about Fran and Mr. Sheffield is that it’s not an instant lust between them. It’s more of a relationship built on respect and friendship before love was even considered.

Jake And Amy (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast features some hilarious characters, but personally, I always came back for Jake and Amy. I always saw them as rivals-to-lovers, but it feels so real watching them turn from competing with each other to becoming friends to going on dates and so much more.

Jane And Rafael (Jane The Virgin)

These two are in a strange situation, considering they didn’t even know each other when Jane fell pregnant accidentally. But watching their relationship grow organically throughout the show’s seasons is always something that I love to view.

Rick And Michonne (The Walking Dead)

When you think of couples who would literally kill for each other, I can think of no better than Rick and Michonne. Not only are they one of the best Walking Dead relationships, but there was a whole spinoff series dedicated to them finding their way back to each other after years apart. Now that is true love right there.

Poussey And Soso (Orange Is the New Black)

It hurts to even write about Poussey and Soso because it feels like they weren’t given enough time together in Orange is the New Black, but from what we were able to see, they really did work well together. Poussey was the kind of friend that Soso needed, and that blossomed into something brighter between the two of them before it was snuffed out. I needed so much more.

Morticia And Gomez (The Addams Family)

I mean, talk about a man who is obsessed with his woman. In any iteration of The Addams Family, Gomez always loves Morticia, but of course, we have to put the OG here from the 1960s TV series because these two were so in love that they ruined our expectations for all real-life romances.

Glenn And Maggie (The Walking Dead)

Yeah, I’m sad even writing about these two because the way it ends is something I don’t like to think about. But for the five seasons that we got with these two together, they were a light in the darkness that was the world of The Walking Dead. They loved each other, protected each other, and stood by the other until the very end.

Hopper And Joyce (Stranger Things)

God, I visibly remember screaming when these two finally got together in Stranger Things because it was just so apparent that they were into each other. Hopper literally risked his life for Joyce, and she risked hers to save him, and I love them together.

This just makes me want to revisit all of these television shows and watch these couples all over again. I’m in need of some cute TV romances. It's time for a binge-watch.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a cult classic TV show, and (by my estimation) one of the best teen dramas ever. The series (which is streaming with a Hulu subscription) is a truly iconic part of '90s culture, and remains to be actress Sarah Michelle Gellar's most ionic role. And the Cruel Intentions star recently explained the moment she realized Buffy was a hit.

Gellar led the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a whopping seven seasons on the air, balancing the show's heart and action to perfection. SMG is working on a Buffy reboot for Hulu, and spoke to People about the show's early days. She revealed how the show's notoriety was a slow burn at first, sharing:

Funny enough, that slasher flick is also getting new life. The trailer for I Know What You Did Last Summer featured a reference to Sarah Michelle Gellar's Helen who is still very much dead in the franchise. And while filming one of the best horror movies of the '90s, she had yet to see the staying power of her work on Buffy.

So what changed? Funny enough, she saw how the public embraced Buffy the Vampire Slayer while filming another beloved horror movie. Namely Wes Craven's Scream 2, which she signed onto without even seeing a script. In the same interview, SMG went on to share:

Little did she know that she's be recognized for playing Buffy Summers for the rest of her career. The series was a bit of a dark horse, thanks to its ambitious story, emphasis on action and visual effects, and placement in a still-unknown network. But in the end it would have a long run on TV, and Sarah Michelle Gellar earned a Golden Globe nomination for her work on the heartbreaking Season 5 episode "The Body."

Of course, all Buffy fans like myself are really thinking is about what's going on with the developing reboot pilot, and whether or not Hulu will actually give it a full season order. News about that project is slowly trickling out, and SMG recently told the pilot's new Slayer that she got the job. We've seen her mentor other Slayers in Season 7, so I'm eager to see this relationship play out on the screen.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is streaming in its entirety over on Hulu. While the reboot isn't part of the 2025 TV premiere list, hopefully it continues moving forward and a full season is orders. Fingers (and stakes) crossed.

The 1990s gave us all-time great sitcoms like Home Improvement and Friends, iconic crime dramas like Law & Order and Oz, and so many other legendary shows considered “must-see TV” by millions of people week in and week out. The generations of fans were thrilled when it was reveled that Sarah Michelle Gellar was returning for a reboot pilot, but they're also curious about what newcomers will be joining her. And SMG just posted a sweet video telling the new Slayer that she's The Chosen One.

There were reports about the new Buffy characters coming to the pilot, including a teenage Slayer who will seemingly get tutelage from The Duchess Buffonia herself. Sarah Michelle Gellar posted on Instagram, revealing the moment she told actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong she got the gig, chock full of easter eggs and references to the original series. How sweet is that? While the Buffy reboot has some work ahead of it before getting a full series order, even getting the chance to work with Gellar in the pilot must be exciting for Armstrong. And you can see how excited the pair of actors are to collaborate with each other.

While not necessarily a household name just yet, Ryan Kiera Armstrong may be a familiar face to a number of high profile gigs. She was in the starring cast of Star Wars: The Skelton Crew and was the title character of the Firestarter reboot. She was also the victim of Pennywise's most gruesome kill in It: Chapter Two.

It should be interesting to see what story is being cooked up for the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But with Sarah Michelle Gellar so passionate about it and Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao t the helm, there's a ton of building excitement about the pilot. Hopefully it's successful enough to convince Hulu to go ahead and order a full season of episodes.

Narratively, fans are eager to see how the pilot picks up after Buffy's series finale. That finale episode saw Willow tapping into ancient power and activating every single Potential Slayer in the world. No longer were Buffy and Faith the only ones with power, resulting in an epic final battle against The First Evil. That episode aired back in 2003, so longtime fans of the series are eager to see how the world changed now that there are so many Slayers running around.

The story continued with Joss Whedon's Buffy comics, but it seems unlikely that the Hulu reboot pilot would consider those canon. Things got pretty narratively wild, including strange romantic pairings and there briefly being no more Slayers or magic.

While we wait for more news about the pilot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer's original seven season are streaming on Hulu. The cast is clearly coming together, and fans are curious about what legacy characters will be included.

Ever since it was announced that a Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot is happening, we’ve been excited about seeing the iconic series return, especially because Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to be involved. But after hearing what Disney TV executive Eric Schrier had to say about bringing it together, I have to say, I’m more interested in it coming together.

Eric Schrier, who is the president of Disney Television Studios and Global Original Television Strategy, recently gave a sprawling interview with Deadline about the future of the studio’s television content. And, let’s be honest, there are a lot of reboots in the works, including new shows based on Prison Break, Holes, the Malcolm in the Middle revival with Frankie Muniz and Bryan Cranston, a Scrubs reboot with Zach Braff and Donald Faison, and a Desperate Housewives reimagining. Here’s what he had to say about Buffy:

When I watch reboots based on projects that I already love, the last thing I want is to feel like a studio is making something simply because they thought it would be popular. It suddenly gets me really stressed out about the new version doing justice to what I loved, or simply exploiting it.

However, Schrier said that all the reboots at Disney are more “coincidential” than anything, and the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer show came out of a real passion from a group of key creators. As he continued:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer was of course created by Joss Whedon, but he’s been under fire for numerous abuse and misconduct allegations in the last few years that even date back to his days on Buffy. However, it’s great to hear some true fans have been hard at work on how to bring the series back to life, and it all came together when they were connected with Oscar winner Chloé Zhao and Sarah Michelle Gellar. The exec also said this:

Well, that’s good to hear. Of course, I won’t be entirely convinced this is all real until I learn it’s fully in production, but we have heard a few details about the show already. For example, there will be a new teen vampire slayer named Nova, who will also come from a single parent home.

She will have a group of friends that seem to somewhat mirror the Scooby Gang from the original series. Of course, we also are hoping the new series will bring the same signature dialogue and include more original Buffy actors. I love this update, and I can’t wait to hear more.

We know them, we love them, and most of the time, we love to hate them. Regardless of how any of us feel about the iconic, troublesome teens that round out the fabric of Hollywood’s youth-centric media, they’ve left their signature messy marks. Marissa Cooper - The O.C.

You could probably make a case for most of The O.C. kids, but Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton) undoubtedly tops them all. Coop’s undoing was a monolith and started on the wings of her parents' divorce. It led to underage drinking, tumultuous relationships, petty theft, and eventually to her passing away after a car crash at the end of Season 3.

Danny Zuko - Grease

Like many other ensembles, you could make a pick mostly anyone from the Grease cast, but Danny Zuko's (John Travolta) issues bled into everyone else’s. Not to mention, he strung Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) along until the very end of the movie.

Serena van der Woodsen - Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl is another show where you could argue a good case for any of the characters being the biggest saboteur. But like Marissa Cooper, Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) just can’t shake off trouble in most things she does. The thought of old her and Georgina Sparks together really sounds like they’d top the list together.

Veronica Sawyer - Heathers

Heathers and Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) were ahead of the curve. When awkward loner Veronica gets invited to join the school’s most popular group, she quickly realizes it’s not the place for her. After befriending new kid Jason Dean (Christian Slater), they accidentally kill one of the Heathers. This sets off an entire killing spree that wreaks havoc on Westerburg High School.

Dawson Leery - Dawson’s Creek

Even though he may have been seen more as a golden boy during his reign, Dawson (James Van Der Beek) caused some major damage in his day. Cady Heron - Mean Girls

Tina Fey’s wildly quotable Mean Girls needs no introduction or explanation. With Cady (Lindsay Lohan) coming to terms with attending a public high school in the US after growing up in Africa, she is a poster child for this list. As she explores her new reality, she gets lost for a moment amid girl world drama, which leads to multiple friend, family, and relationship troubles.

Rue Bennet - Euphoria

The Max ‘teen’ jewel-encrusted drama juggernaut holds another ensemble of lost and morose students. However, Rue Bennet (Zendaya) and her substance abuse issues are the focal point. It's upended friendships, caused familial stresses, multiple times over, causing Rue to lie, steal and hurt everyone in the East Highlanders.

Chris Hargensen - Carrie

Stephen King’s Carrie is another classic high school staple that helped push the envelope on what fictional teen worlds could hold. Popular girl and bully, Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen) makes Carrie’s (Sissy Spacek) life a living nightmare. Hargensen continues down a downward spiral that leads to the bone-chilling but iconic prank that happens at the dance (which has some truly grim consequences).

Tim Riggins - Friday Night Lights

If you know anything about this NBC network TV classic, you either love or hate Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch). While he was a regular womanizer, heavy partier, not to mention that he sabotaged himself and the team with some regularity, he straightened up.

Dallas ‘Dally’ Winston - The Outsiders

Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of The Outsiders is a quintessential coming-of-age story. Even though the whole gang is rough and tumble, along with any of the ‘Socs,’ Dally (Matt Dillon) is the most troubled. With an already tumultuous background, Johnny’s death sends him on to make poor decisions for himself and his friends.

Cory Matthews - Boy Meets World

Surprising, I know. The more classic choice from Boy Meets World may be Shawn Hunter, but Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) sparked plenty of trouble in his time (like fellow do-gooder, Dawson Leery). Throughout the 7 seasons, he caused more rifts between his family, friends and Topanga than anyone else.

Billy Loomis & Stu Macher - Scream

Naturally, any teen in any scary movie generally has some baggage that leads to strife in one way or another. Youths like Billy (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu (Matthew Lillard) are different, though, they are intentionally motivated to terrify and harm their fellow classmates and the people of Woodsboro. Unfortunately for them, their plans backfire on them gravely.

Lucas Scott - One Tree Hill

Like the aforementioned teen network drama shows of the mid and late ‘00s, any character is up for debate. Lucas Scott (Chad Michael Murray), the main protagonist, puts on a good show of commotion for everyone in his life. Being a serial heartbreaker while being unloyal and manipulative to others lands him this particular title.

Jennifer Check - Jennifer’s Body

Jennifer’s Body, again, isn’t filled with average adolescents, and especially not Jennifer (Megan Fox). While she and longtime friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried) head out for a semi-average night of Jennifer-approved fun, all goes awry. We find out that Jennifer has turned into a demon feasting on the male teens of Devil’s Kettle, WY. After the friends face off, Needy gets pinned for the murders and gets taken to an insane asylum.

Rachel Berry - Glee

The destined-for-greatness Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) typically stopped at nothing to get what she wanted, regardless of the consequences. While the fictional NYADA darling had moments of hope and promise, her ego and ambition always seemed to cause more harm than good. (Any Ryan Murphy-created teen could do, though.)

Seth - Superbad

The 2007 classic was the first Seth Rogen-Evan Goldberg project, and it immediately put them on the map. The semi-biographical Superbad revolves around characters with the same names and pretty typical senior tropes. Of the fictional duo Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera), and their pal, Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), the first of the trio creates the most trouble for their celebratory evening. While the trio make up, along with the girls (Emma Stone, Martha MacIsaac), before graduation.

Rory Gilmore - Gilmore Girls

“Why did you drop out of Yale?” Even though Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) is one of the more unusual fictional high schoolers on the list, her dropping out was monumental for the world of Gilmore Girls. Even Lauren Graham didn’t like the storyline because of the turmoil it created between Lorelai and Rory. Not to mention, her sleeping with Dean, missing Lorelai's graduation and later on, being more lost than ever in her 30s.

Donnie - Donnie Darko

Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) isn’t your typical troublesome, drama-filled teen, even though his choices in one reality lead to serious consequences. His present ED signifiers (Emotional Disturbance) present Donnie as something else, but we eventually come to realize he's an anti-hero of sorts. As he comes to realize that there are multiple timelines at play, he chooses to fix it to save Gretchen Ross' (Jena Malone) life. And with his developed powers, he returns to the day when it all went awry, which leads to his destiny--death.

Archie Andrews - Riverdale

Archie of The CW’s Riverdale was one of the many, much darker TV reboots out there. And though all the drama has always hinged on the red-headed football hero regardless of genre, the TV show really packs Archie with a punch. To be fair, he also found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time quite frequently–it’s how he reacted to them that gives him the top spot for the searching students of Riverdale High.

Kathryn Merteuil & Sebastian Valmont - Cruel Intentions

Another young and terrifying twosome is Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Philippe). The oddball step-siblings wager a bet that involves innocent and new Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon). Through the scheme, the group of students is faced with continuing drama until a very sad end.

Valerie Malone - Beverly Hills, 90210

Though there was plenty of actual drama on the set of Beverly Hills, 90210, Valerie Malone (Tiffani Thiessen) wasted no time sowing seeds of chaos. Arriving in Season 5 with a lot of baggage in the form of family trauma, Malone was immediately set up to be in trouble. She dated many of the guys and regularly feuded with the girls.

Max Fischer - Rushmore

As one of the many stylized Wes Anderson films, Rushmore was one of his earliest. Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) is a love-drunk student determined to date his teacher and will stop at nothing to achieve it. After an array of mishaps and his fellow acquaintance, Blume (Bill Murray), hitting it off with her, Max loses it. He leaked the affair publicly and temporarily burned bridges with both of them.

Willow Rosenberg - Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Willow’s (Alyson Hannigan) rise to raising hell for Buffy and co. may be a slow burn, but once she hits it, things get wild. While her use of telepathy, manipulation and struggling to keep her magic in check kick off the season, Tara’s death sets Willow into overdrive in trying to destroy the world.

PJ & Josie - Bottoms

Gen Z coming-of-age comedies come in all shapes and sizes, including Emma Seligman’s Bottoms. The satirical take on the high school experience is wild, especially with PJ (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri). The BFF’s hatch a fight club for girls so they can talk to cheerleaders they have crushes on. Needless to say, a lot of drama goes down, including a car blowing up.

Mona Vanderwaal - Pretty Little Liars

Honestly, most characters from the 2010 series have a fair shot here. But Mona (Janel Parrish) is the reason for all of the mystery and torment. She is who sparks the series because of her grudge against the main friend group. Eventually, she becomes one of them, and even more trouble ensues.

Laura Palmer - Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me

In my opinion, there’s no list about misguided high schoolers complete without Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). The character was cemented into pop culture in David Lynch’s cult show, Twin Peaks, but the less popular prequel movie shows her tragic undoing. Her last days are filled with traumas relating to her drug addiction, web of lies and darker spirits. Warning, this movie isn't for the faint of heart.

DeGrassi: The Next Generation

DeGrassi: The Next Generation is maybe the only title on the list in which each character is as chaotic and troubled as the last. The iconic Canadian teen soap has multiple iterations, but the 2002-2015 series takes the cake. Between the students, they have every classic dramatic HS storyline in the book, and alumni Drake’s “I’m Upset” reunion-filled music video summarizes some key points.

Nancy Downs - The Craft

The quartet of girls in The Craft start as lost as the next, but Nancy’s (Fairuza Balk) power-hungry ways destroy what they have together. After quiet Sarah Bailey (Robin Tunney) moves to town and gets wronged, Downs and her pals take her in. All four hatch a scheme to cast a spell on the wrongdoer, and when it succeeds, that’s when Nancy starts sabotaging everything.

John B - Outer Banks

Netflix’s Outer Banks is one wild ride with wayward John B (Chase Stokes) at the helm. Sure, other characters may be outwardly more troubled (JJ, Sarah or Rafe), but everyone’s lives intensified because of John B’s initial treasure hunt.

Christine ‘Lady Bird’ McPherson - Lady Bird

As one of the more subtle teenage pot stirrers, Ladybird (Saoirse Ronan) still makes her presence and opinions unmistakably clear. Her main sources of conflict reside within her relationship with her hardworking mom (Laurie Metcalf) and nerdy best friend (Beanie Feldstein). While Lady Bird temporarily burns bridges with both in pursuit of greater life expectations and new friends, she mends things with both.

Effy Stonem - Skins UK

A cult classic that ran from 2007-2013 and largely featured the rebellious but lost Effy Stonem (Kaya Scodelario). From the jump, we see 14-year-old her sneaking home in the early morning after being out all night at a rave. Needless to say, Effy’s journey was a bumpy one filled with substance abuse, mental health crises, and a web of lies.
