If you haven't, before the chaos begins (spoiler alert: the ship sinks), there is a wonderful love story and, yeah, some steamy moments between the two stars.

If You Were the Last (2023)

What It’s About: The last two surviving astronauts on a years-long mission in space fall in love in a "last person on Earth" kind of scenario in this Peacock original.

What To Expect: It's not exactly a rom-com, but it definitely has some funny moments, including a hot scene in weightlessness.

The Love Witch (2016)

What It’s About: A not-very-talented witch uses spells to have men fall in love with her, to predictably disastrous results.

What To Expect: Part horror movie, part comedy, part tribute to '60s B-movies, The Love Witch is a surprisingly artsy jaunt into a very bizarre world. It's not the best movie on this list, but it's a fun romp with some sexy moments, for sure.

Hall Pass (2011)

What It’s About: Two couples find themselves in a rut in their relationships, and an unorthodox plan is hatched to rekindle their love.

What To Expect: A sex-comedy in the classic sense of the word, if there ever was one. It's raunchy, dirty, funny, and reminds me of those great comedies from the '80s in this style.

The Love Witch (2016)

The Cast: Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Katherine Hahn

What It’s About: The name pretty much says it all. When a mom (Kunis) finds out her husband is cheating on her, she decides to throw caution to the wind and live it up in every way.

What To Expect: A raunchy comedy with a ton of sex jokes and some very spicy moments, though things aren't too revealing.

Peacock’s collection of sexually explicit movies is changing all the time (more than other streamers, even), so make sure to check back in August for even more naughty films.

The 2010s were a transformative decade for movies as directors like Damien Chazelle, Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele hit the mainstream, and many actors exploded into stardom or gave career-defining performances in movies like theirs. Now, it’s time to celebrate some of the best films of this decade and the performers who starred in them. 

Emma Stone – La La Land 

This ode to Old Hollywood and modern romance from Damien Chazelle is widely beloved in part because of Emma Stone's performance. If you go back to reviews for La La Land, you’ll see Stone and Ryan Gosling praised for their work as they played Mia and Sebastian, two aspiring artists who fall in love with each other. Notably, Emma Stone won her first Oscar for the film because of the wonderful performance she gave as the up-and-coming actress. 

Kristen Wiig – Bridesmaids

When it comes to Bridesmaids and all its hilarious lines and gags, we all need to say a collective thank you to Kristen Wiig. Not only did the Saturday Night Live alum lead the stellar ensemble cast of this 2011 flick, but she also wrote the movie with Annie Mumolo, and they got an Oscar nomination for it. 

Mahershala Ali – Moonlight

Moonlight, which famously won Best Picture in 2017, is a coming-of-age film that follows Chiron through three stages of his life, focusing on him exploring his sexuality and identity. In it, Mahershala Ali plays Juan, a man who has a pivotal role in Chiron’s early life. Famously, Ali won his first Oscar for his moving performance in this film. 

Daniel Kaluuya – Get Out

Get Out is considered one of the greatest horror movies of all time, and it marked the directorial debut of Jordan Peele. While this film about the deeply dark turn a trip takes after a white woman brings her Black boyfriend home to meet her family is career-defining for its director – as he’s gone on to become quite the name in the genre – it also marked a major breakout for Daniel Kaluuya who played the film’s lead, Chris. 

Amy Adams – Arrival 

Arrival is unquestionably one of Amy Adams’ best movies, and to this day, folks are still livid that she wasn’t nominated for an Oscar for it. She plays Louise, a linguist assigned to decipher and translate an alien language. However, as Arrival’s ending makes abundantly clear, there’s way more to it than that, and one of the major reasons this movie works is because of Adams’ masterful, emotional and nuanced performance. 

J.K. Simmons – Whiplash

In Whiplash, one of J.K. Simmons’ best films, he plays a brilliant and brutal jazz conductor and instructor named Terence Fletcher. During the film, Miles Teller plays a young drummer named Andrew who is determined to become great, and his intense relationship with Terence and the notion of being the best is what makes Damien Chazelle’s film magnificent. On top of its overall acclaim, Simmons also won an Oscar for his performance.

Hugh Jackman – Logan 

Logan was Hugh Jackman’s last ride as the Wolverine, and it was basically perfect. While he’s returned to the role since in Deadpool and Wolverine, Logan still serves as a wonderful conclusion to the iconic X-Man’s story. It was also a game-changing Marvel film, as it brought a level of grit and intrigue that we hadn’t really seen in a movie from this universe before. 

Ben Affleck – Argo 

Much like Good Will Hunting, Argo marked a major milestone in Ben Affleck’s career. It was one of the films that solidified him as a top-tier director, and on top of that, he also starred in the film about a CIA agent disguised as a producer who goes into Tehran on a mission to save a group of Americans. Oh, also, the film went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars too. 

Jesse Eisenberg — The Social Network

The Social Network cast is stacked, however, it wouldn’t be what it is without Jesse Eisenberg’s performance as Mark Zuckerberg at its center. His nuanced performance which is somehow both collected and chaotic compliments Aaron Sorkin’s fast-talking script perfectly, and he expertly helped build up tension in the film that director David Fincher is known for. All around, that made for a perfect, heart-pounding drama about the rise of Facebook.

Leonardo DiCaprio – The Wolf Of Wall Street  

While Leonardo DiCaprio has a long list of career-defining performances, and he and Martin Scorsese have made many great movies together, you can’t deny that his portrayal of Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street tops that list. 

Brie Larson – Room

The film Room, which is about a mother and her son escaping captivity, is masterfully led by Brie Larson, who plays Ma. Both she and Jacob Tremblay, who played her son Jack, were praised for their performances, and in 2016, the actress won an Oscar for her work. 

Daniel Craig – Knives Out

Now, I know that Daniel Craig’s tenure as James Bond was still happening in the 2010s. However, an equally important and brilliant role he took on was as detective Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s first whodunnit Knives Out. Now, after leading the cast of Knives Out, Craig has gone on to reprise his role as the Southern detective on multiple occasions, because he loves it and so do we. 

Ryan Gosling – Drive

If you look over Ryan Gosling’s best movies, on one side you’ll find his brilliant comedic films – like Barbie and The Nice Guys – and on the other side, you’ll find his stoic and dramatic performance, like the one he gives in Drive. Put simply, Drive wouldn’t work without the actor’s lead performance, because the entire film hinges on him and his abilities. 

Ryan Reynolds – Deadpool

After years of working to get it made and some well-timed leaked footage, finally, in 2016, Deadpool came out and we got to see Ryan Reynolds in his element as the Merc with a Mouth. 

Casey Affleck – Manchester By The Sea 

In a film about a man returning home to reckon with his past and grief after losing his brother, Casey Affleck gives an emotional and commanding performance. Not only did he win an Oscar for his work in this drama, but it’s also one of the big defining roles of his career. 

Chris Evans – Captain America: The Winter Soldier 

Chris Evans began and ended his tenure as Steve Rogers in the 2010s. While all his outings as the star-spangled man with a plan were excellent, nothing tops his performance as Cap in the political thriller that is the Russo brothers’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is easily one of the best Marvel movies ever made. 

Ralph Fiennes – The Grand Budapest Hotel 

Under Wes Anderson’s precise direction, Ralph Fiennes occupied the pastel world of the Grand Budapest Hotel with grace and style. His fast-talking M. Gustave went on quite the adventure in this film, and he won over the hearts of audiences with his quick wit, smooth charm and impeccable work ethic. 

Natalie Portman – Black Swan 

Throwing it back to the beginning of the decade, Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 psychological thriller Black Swan showed us Natalie Portman’s talents in a new light. While she had been on the scene and in big movies for years, this film marked a major milestone in her career as her performance as a tortured ballerina got her an Academy Award. 

Matthew McConaughey – Dallas Buys Club

Obviously, for a couple of decades before this, Matthew McConaughey was known and beloved for fun movies like Dazed and Confused and How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days. However, in 2013, Dallas Buyers Club marked a notable shift in his career. Not only did he win an Oscar for this dramatic turn as a man who finds out he has AIDS, but he also went on to star in acclaimed projects like Interstellar and True Detective one year later, cementing himself as a magnificent dramatic actor with serious range. 

Jennifer Lawrence – Silver Linings Playbook

Yes, Jennifer Lawrence leading The Hunger Games cast is one of the biggest triumphs of her career. However, amid all of that, she starred in the beloved dramedy Silver Linings Playbook with Bradley Cooper, and that’s the film for which she won her Oscar. This magnificent film about two people learning to live and thrive through grief and mental illness, is a thoughtful and funny film that Lawrence steals with her amazing performance. 

Brad Pitt – Moneyball 

Moneyball is the story about the general manager of the Oakland A’s using his business savvy and what little money his team had to assemble a rag-tag team of MLB players. Brad Pitt plays said manager, Billy Beane, and I mean it when I say the movie really wouldn’t work without him. He’s at the center of it, and he carries it to victory just like his character did with the A’s.  

Chadwick Boseman – Black Panther 

We sadly lost Chadwick Boseman way too early, however, his legacy will live on forever. This is in part because of his performance as the King of Wakanda, T’Challa. Black Panther was a historic moment in modern movie history, and his incredible take on the titular hero is a big reason why. 

Margot Robbie – I, Tonya 

Before I, Tonya, Margot Robbie was beloved for her supporting and ensemble roles in films like The Wolf of Wall Street and Suicide Squad. However, one of the movies that helped solidify her as both a leading lady and super producer was I, Tonya. She played Tonya Harding and produced the film under the banner of her company LuckyChap – which went on to make films like Barbie and Promising Young Woman. 

Florence Pugh – Midsommar

Florence Pugh exploded onto the scene with the haunting Ari Aster film Midsommar. The movie is now considered one of the best horror movies of all time, and a big reason why is Pugh’s performance. 

Saoirse Ronan – Lady Bird

Talk about a dynamic duo. Greta Gerwig and Saoirse Ronan are a match made in heaven, and that was solidified into fact when the actress played the titular Lady Bird in the director’s breakout film. Not only did fans fall in love with Ronan’s performance as the defiant teenage gal, but she also received wide acclaim and an Oscar nomination for it. Plus, it was the beginning of a glorious partnership between her and Greta Gerwig as they then went on to make Little Women together. 

Timothée Chalamet – Call Me By Your Name

These days, when people think of Timothée Chalamet, they likely think of him as Paul Atreides, the leader of the Dune cast. However, before that (and in a different decade) the film that sprung him into the mainstream was Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name. The deeply romantic and tender coming-of-age drama was led beautifully by Chalamet, and since then he’s taken on more roles that have helped cement him as one of the top-leading men of his generation. 

Anna Kendrick – Pitch Perfect

If you were a kid in 2012 (like I was), odds are you learned the “Cups” song. The movie about college acapella was a phenomenon in the early 2010s, and it served as a big breakout leading role for Anna Kendrick. Not only was she funny as Becca, but everyone also became aware that she had the singing voice of an angel.  

Lupita Nyong’o – 12 Years A Slave

Lupita Nyong’o’s first feature film was 12 Years A Slave. Her performance in the movie by Steve McQueen won her an Oscar in 2012 and solidified her as a top-tier dramatic performer. Since then, she’s gone on to star in massive blockbusters like Black Panther and A Quiet Place: Day One. 

Joaquin Phoenix – Joker

There have been many amazing takes on the Joker, and Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck was a totally new one. In Joker, we see the villain’s origin story, and it’s a film that’s unlike any other DC project. The haunting performance ultimately won the actor an Oscar, and he reprised the part again in Joker: Folie à Deux.

Charlize Theron – Mad Max: Fury Road

The movie is named after Mad Max, and he’s great, don’t get me wrong, but Furiosa steals the show. Charlize Theron’s performance as the driver in Mad Max: Fury Road is fierce and jaw-dropping, and she’s one of many reasons why George Miller’s movie is considered one of the best action films. 

Michael Cera – Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

You can’t have Scott Pilgrim vs. The World without a perfect Scott Pilgrim and that’s who Michael Cera is. He perfectly played the awkward yet heroic protagonist in Edgar Wright’s beloved film, and to this day, it's considered some of his best work.

Matt Damon – The Martian

This Ridley Scott movie is literally about one man who is stuck on Mars. Yes, there are other people in the film trying to save him. However, overall, The Martian is Matt Damon’s movie. He plays the stranded astronaut and scientist, and the heart, charisma, intelligence and even humor he brings to the space drama is unforgettable. 

All around, the 2010s were full of films that are on their way to becoming all-time classics, and it’s in part thanks to the brilliant actors who starred in them.

Plenty of sci-fi classics, adventure epics, soaring musicals and heartrending dramas have introduced movie lovers to twosomes worth rooting for. Joel and Clementine (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind)

Not even a Lacuna memory erasure procedure could make Joel Barish (Jim Carrey, in one of his best performances) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) forget each other in the 2004 Michael Gondry-directed classic Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Though both characters initially wanted to dissolve their relationship, getting to relive all of their moments together — both good and bad — made them, and us, want to see their romance rekindled. 

Jackson and Ally (A Star Is Born)

The love story between an established Hollywood star and a plucky aspiring singer has been told across several film versions of A Star Is Born — though the duo is known as Norman and Esther in previous iterations — but Bradley Cooper's Jackson and Lady Gaga's Ally reinvigorated the cinematic romance in the 2018 romantic musical, thanks to their electrifying chemistry and incredible duets. That devastating ending wouldn't hit nearly the same way without them.

Rose and Jack (Titanic)

James Cameron's Titanic does so much as a movie: one part historical drama, one part disaster epic, and one part onscreen romance for the ages. And guiding moviegoers through all of it is the instantly iconic pairing of scrappy third-class artist Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and sheltered high-class debutante Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet). 

Chiron and Kevin (Moonlight)

In the 2016 Oscar winner for Best Picture, we get to see Chiron and Kevin together through three periods of their lives in Miami, from their childhoods to teendom to adulthood. Their sweet connection turns sultry when the pair (now played by Trevante Rhodes and André Holland, respectively) reunites as grown men at a Florida diner, with Barbara Lewis' "Hello Stranger" crooning over the jukebox. 

Rick and Ilsa (Casablanca)

It's ironic that arguably the greatest cinematic romance of all time is actually between exes. Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman) may not be together anymore in the 1942 masterpiece Casablanca, as she has since moved on and married Czechoslovak Resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). But they'll wistfully "always have Paris," and we'll always have them. 

Marianne and Héloïse (Portrait Of A Lady On Fire)

This subtle yet stirring 2019 drama from Céline Sciamma tells the story of a slow-burn romance between two young women in late 18th-century France: a young aristocrat named Héloïse (Adèle Haenel) and the painter commissioned to paint her portrait, Marianne (Noémie Merlant). Together, the LGBTQ+ movie couple crafts a connection as singular and stunning as anything found on a canvas. 

Tish and Fonny (If Beale Street Could Talk)

Director Barry Jenkins composes a stunning cast for this film adaptation of James Baldwin's 1974 novel, including Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bryan Tyree Henry and Regina King. But the heart of the story beats with its core couple Tish and Fonny, portrayed by KiKi Layne and Stephan James. The film is told in a non-linear fashion, jumping from highs (the birth of a child) to lows (wrongful incarceration), but the heart-wrenching love between Tish and Fonny threads it all. 

Ennis and Jack (Brokeback Mountain)

One of the best LGBTQ movies of all time, Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain broke hearts the world over with its beautifully rendered romance between Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), two Wyoming cowboys whose intense but repressed passion stretches across decades. The realities of early-'60s America meant that the men couldn't be publicly open with their relationship, which made their time together both savored and tragic. 

Elizabeth and Will (Pirates Of The Caribbean)

Although Keira Knightley's Elizabeth Swann has several love interests throughout the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, including Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and James Norrington (Jack Davenport), even casual fans know that her one true love is none other than blacksmith-turned-pirate Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). Neo and Trinity (The Matrix)

Reynolds and Alma (Phantom Thread)

Not every movie romance is a happily-ever-after breeze. For controlling couture designer Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and clumsy but calculating country waitress Alma Elson (Vicky Krieps), things aren't entirely smooth sailing after they meet-cute at the restaurant she works at and marry shortly thereafter, especially because the bride has taken to micro-poisoning her husband to render him sweet and submissive. Her actions are twisted, no doubt, but Reynolds ends up finding it all weirdly endearing, and so do we. 

Rhett And Scarlett (Gone With The Wind) 

One of the most iconic pairings ever on the big screen, Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) and Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh) weather a lot throughout this four-hour 1939 Oscar winner, from civil war to typhoid fever to the loss of a child. Ironically, it's their very own natures that they can't outrun, from Rhett's ruthlessness to Scarlett's stubbornness. When the Southern belle finally realizes that she's really loved Rhett all along, it's too late, as he harshly leaves her with one of the movie's best parting lines: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

Clarence and Alabama (True Romance)

In sickness and in health, until arrest do us part — those could basically be the vows of Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) and Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette), a pair of newlyweds on the run from the Mafia after stealing a shipment of drugs. Things get unsurprisingly dark for our brazen bride and groom, but the sheer devotion that the two have for each other is a welcome bright spot. 

Gomez and Morticia (The Addams Family)

Who would have thought that one of pop culture's healthiest onscreen couples would be the exceedingly odd, decidedly macabre Morticia and Gomez Addams? Though incarnated by numerous performers on screens big and small, the portrayals by Anjelica Huston as Morticia and Raul Julia as Gomez in 1991's The Addams Family deliciously embody the characters' endless enthusiasm for each other. Madly in love, indeed!

Jesse and Céline (The 'Before' Trilogy)

It's incredibly rare to follow a beloved movie couple for years — in Richard Linklater's Before Trilogy, you movingly get to follow Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) across decades, from the star-crossed travelers who meet on a Eurail train and later fall for each other while playing tourist in Vienna in 1995's Before Sunrise, to the long-together older versions we find summering in Greece with their children in 2013's Before Midnight. 

Albert and Armand (The Birdcage)

Sure, stereotypes abound in Mike Nichols' 1996 comedy The Birdcage, especially surrounding Armand (Robin Williams, in a classic performance) and Albert Goldman (Nathan Lane), a gay couple whose son (Dan Futterman) is set to marry the daughter (Calista Flockhart) of a very conservative senator (Gene Hackman) and his wife (Dianne Wiest). But in the middle of all of the flamboyant hijinks, Armand and Albert prove to have the film's most stable relationship, one marked by compassion, communication and acceptance. 

Peter and Mary Jane (The 'Spider-Man' Trilogy)

Along with giving moviegoers a rain-soaked, upside-down lip lock we won't soon forget, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst's take on Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson imbued some palpable real-life chemistry into the beloved comic-book couple. In keeping with Spider-Man tradition, the actors briefly dated offscreen as well, though Dunst joked that filming that epic smooch was far less pleasurable than it looked.

Noah and Allie (The Notebook)

Let's be real, it would take a very special gentleman to have us rooting for anyone other than James Marsden to get the girl. It's good, then, that director Nick Cassavetes cast Ryan Gosling at his dreamiest opposite Rachel McAdams in this 2004 melodrama, widely considered one of the best romantic movies of all time. The actors' off-set connection (they dated IRL from 2005 to 2007) is passionately felt in the characters' constant bickering and bantering, not to mention those intense rainstorm smooches. 

Edward and Bella (Twilight)

Neither age (she's 17-year-old and he's a cool 104) nor species (she's a human and he's a blood-drinking, sparkly-skinned vampire) could keep them apart. No, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) remained astonishingly loyal to and protective of each other throughout the entire Twilight Saga film franchise, despite jealous werewolves, vampire armies and creepy half-vamp babies trying to get in their way (though Stewart hilariously does not agree with her character's infatuation). 

Katniss and Peeta (The Hunger Games)

Surviving tough times is a given in any relationship but few movie couples have been tested by as much hardship as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). The characters first bond as "tributes" in the government's annual Hunger Games — which require them to fight to the death until only one person is left alive — and despite the odds, they're able to parlay that trust and partnership into the franchise's best romance. (Sorry, Gale.) 

Emma and Adèle (Blue Is The Warmest Colour)

Much has been made about the physical intimacy between Léa Seydoux's Emma and Adèle Exarchopoulos's Adèle in the 2013 French drama Blue is the Warmest Color, but their connection goes far deeper than the film's explicit sex scenes. The feelings between the two young women are so raw and fierce that when they meet again at a restaurant after years of separation, we absolutely believe Emma when she says she will always feel "infinite tenderness" for what they had. 

Ron and Hermione (Harry Potter)

Some of the best romances come out of friendships, and the coupling between Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) is no exception. For years, Harry Potter fans watched as the young wizard and witch danced around their feelings for each other — granted, they were busy fighting the Wizarding World's darkest forces at the time — so when the longtime pals finally locked lips in Deathly Hallows — Part 2, the big moment felt completely earned. 

Jamal and Latika (Slumdog Millionaire)

It's the intense love and loyalty that Jamal (Dev Patel) has for Latika (Freida Pinto), who he first met as a kid in the slums of Mumbai, that fuels his every move in this Danny Boyle-directed musical drama. Whether he's stealing shoes at the Taj Mahal, taking a job as a chaiwala at a call center or winning India's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, Jamal is doing it all to get back to Latika. And when he does, it's only fitting that his whole world breaks out in song and dance. 

Romeo and Juliet (Romeo + Juliet)

They are the O.G. star-crossed lovers and in Baz Luhrmann's 1996 retelling of the Shakespearean classic, Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes beautifully lead the Romeo + Juliet cast as our eponymous pair and capture all of the intensity of first love. Yes, with family feuds, fatal duels and friar mix-ups aplenty, this relationship was doomed to fail, but at least it pulsed with youthful verve and captivating chemistry while it lasted. 

Oliver and Elio (Call Me By Your Name)

Some relationships may be short in span but sweeping in their impact. In Luca Guadagnino's 2017 masterpiece Call Me by Your Name, the romance between 17-year-old Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet) and graduate student Oliver (Armie Hammer) — who is assisting Elio's father (Michael Stuhlbarg) for the summer — only lasts a few short, sun-soaked weeks. But the after-effects of their coupling ripple through both young men long after the cold settles in. 

Rick and Evelyn (The Mummy)

One of the best things about the romance between adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and librarian Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) is that it subverts that tired beauty-and-brawn stereotype. Evelyn is obviously lovely but she's no distressed damsel — she's as capable of deciphering hieroglyphics as she is sword-fighting the undead. And Rick is fittingly valiant but needs to be rescued himself every now and then. Together, they make the perfect mummy-fighting pair. 

Tony And Maria (West Side Story) 

Taking inspiration from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, there was always an undercurrent of tragedy between Tony (Richard Beymer) and Maria (Natalie Wood), two Upper West Side teens tied to rival NYC street gangs. The relationship between the young lovers remains pure and passionate — iconically portrayed in that famous "Tonight" balcony scene — even as they get caught up in prejudice, violence and societal divides.

Mia And Sebastian (La La Land)

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone have teamed up several times onscreen, including 2011's Crazy, Stupid, Love and 2013's Gangster Squad, but it was 2016's La La Land that best used their fizzy, years-honed friendship and produced their most iconic pairing as struggling jazz pianist Sebastian Wilder and aspiring actress Mia Dolan, who meet and fall in love while pursuing their dreams in Los Angeles. 

Bonnie and Clyde (Bonnie And Clyde)

Just because a couple is doing bad deeds doesn't mean we can't root for them, right? Yes, Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) and Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) were up to all sorts of criminal mischief in the 1967 neo-noir Bonnie and Clyde, from bank robberies to gang kidnappings, but their actions were powered by a passion so intense, it was deadly. 

Rocky and Adrian (Rocky)

Yo, Adrian! The relationship between Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and Adrian Pennino (Talia Shire) — who first meet over turtle food at a Philadelphia pet store — is one of the connecting threads of the Rocky film franchise. Despite her misgivings about Rocky's dangerous career, Adrian is a supportive, steadfast presence for Rocky both inside the ring and out, so much so that even when he loses, he still feels like a winner. 

Maria and the Captain (The Sound Of Music)

How do you solve a problem like Maria? You fall in love with her, of course! And who could blame Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) for catching feelings for the effervescent governess to his seven children, especially when she's played by the incomparable Julie Andrews? Watching his gruff, widowed military officer soften under Maria's care is, simply, one of our favorite things. 

Sausage Party: Foodtopia is now on Amazon Prime, and the new sequel series has doubled-down on one unexpected element of the 2016 movie: film references. Everything from Apocalypse Now to Seth Rogen’s own Superbad is spoofed in some way, but one of the longest and most blatant reference was definitely the Episode 4 end credits sequence, which featured Sufjan Stevens’ song "Visions Of Gideon" as heard in the iconic final minutes of Call Me By Your Name. It turns out that this was also one of the most difficult moments to clear legally, and Seth Rogen recently opened up to CinemaBlend about asking permission from director Luca Guadagnino and Stevens himself.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Seth Rogen -- the writer, producer and star of Sausage Party: Foodtopia -- alongside Kristen Wiig and Sam Richardson amid the show's recent press day. When it came to that aforementioned gag involving the acclaimed Italian filmmaker's 2017 romance film, Rogen said this:

It makes sense that these particular rights would be a harder obtain, as the scene in question features over one a minute of "Visions Of Gideon." Will Forte’s character, Jack, in the midst of starvation, eats his friend's foot by the light of a fire while the credits roll. Call Me By Your Name has a very different kind of artistic merit than Sausage Party, so the fact that Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevenes were down to play is very charming. Maybe it was the cannibalistic element of the scene that won the Bones And All director over.

Or maybe we’re just underestimating those who practice art cinema in general, as Seth Rogen -- a pretty good authority on what’s funny -- said this:

Call Me By Your Name earned Luca Guadagnino and Sufjan Stevens their first Oscar nominations, and no amount of jokes can take that away. It was also a career-making turn for Timothée Chalamet well before he was a pop culture icon who is dating a Jenner and regularly turning heads on the red carpet. Guadagnino's acclaimed flick has its place in film history, and even those who created it think it’s fair game for parody.

Seth Rogen, on the other hand, takes a different kind of approach to his work. He’s always high when filming, and Sausage Party: Foodtopia features an intense orgy amongst animated food products. The point is, a collaboration between him and the likes of Sufjan Stevens is just one of those beautiful and bizarre Hollywood occurrences.

Here lies the hopes and dreams of “happily ever after.” While we often go to the movies to see couples ride off into the sunset, it doesn’t always shake out that way. Across Hollywood history, there’s been tons of matches made in heaven, but right now we’re going to focus on those memorable break-ups we’re still not over, and may never get over. But hey, sometimes a truly great break-up in a film can be relatable, cathartic and as we'll see, really big break-ups can lead to even better results later on. Or, the break-up in and of itself is the happy ending. Either way, breakups are part of life, so let the tears pour for these ill-fated couples.

Mia & Sebastian, La La Land 

One of the best finales to a movie is arguably Damien Chazelle’s La La Land ending. After Emma Stone’s Mia and Ryan Gosling’s Sebastian fell in love in the musical comedy, their relationship ultimately falls apart after Mia is cast as the lead in a movie being shot in Paris. After Mia nails her audition, we catch the couple five years later, where both of them have found success in their fields, but are no longer together. In an emotional scene, Mia comes across Sebastian’s booming jazz club and he plays their song as the movie imagines what could have been if they stayed together. 

Joel & Clementine, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is not only one of the greatest breakup films out there, but the best movies of the 2000s, too. As we learn during the film, Kate Winslet’s Clementine decides to go through a trial procedure to forget her ex Joel after their breakup, which involves an argument that goes wrong regarding their thoughts about children. Within the movie’s apt meditation on breakups, the Eternal Sunshine ending has Joel and Clementine deciding to give each other another shot, knowing full well the outcome could play out the same between them this time. 

Joe & Summer, (500) Days Of Summer 

When (500) Days Of Summer opens, it warns its audience that they are not about to see a love story, but even so, it’s easy to still get swept up in the couple’s romance. While the 2009 movie is told through the eyes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Joe, where he paints Zooey Deschanel’s Summer as the villain, the pairing operates as an interesting commentary on how people can idolize the other and ignore the signals that point to the other not being the right person for them. The breakup in this movie is sad, until Joe gets a poetic second chance with a woman aptly named Autumn. 

Daniel & Miranda, Mrs. Doubtfire 

Mrs. Doubtfire is one of the best Robin Williams movies, especially because of how it handles the realities of divorce. Throughout, the movie follows Williams’ Daniel as he disguises himself as a character named Mrs. Doubtfire in order to spend more time with his three children amidst his separation from Sally Field’s Miranda. Sadly, by the finale, the parents do not get back together. However, the breakup makes way for a sweet message for those who can relate.  

 Annette & Sebastian, Cruel Intentions 

In 1999’s Cruel Intentions, Ryan Phillippe’s Sebastian breaks things off with Reese Witherspoon’s Annette in an especially emotional scene that leaves Annette by herself in absolute tears over him. The whole thing is the result of a bet Sebastian makes with Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Kathryn, where his winnings would be getting her in bed. But, once Sebastian goes to Kathryn to cash in, he learns she had been two steps ahead of him the whole time. This movie definitely lives up to its name! 

Ted & Joanna, Kramer vs. Kramer 

One classic breakup movie we’re not getting over anytime soon is Kramer Vs. Kramer, which centers on a couple’s divorce proceedings and how it affects their young son. Starring Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman as the couple, the drama brings a grounded perspective about how marriages can fall apart and how figuring out custody between parents can be a harrowing process. 

Gale & Dewey, The Scream Movies

In between the scares of the Scream movies, a sweet romance blossomed between Courteney Cox’s journalist character Gale Weathers and David Arquette’s Deputy Dewey Riley. However, in 2022’s Scream, we learn that the couple split up due to Gale’s aspirations to live in New York City and Dewey’s substance abuse issues. What makes this breakup a real stab in the chest is when Dewey is killed off later in the movie. 

Theodore & Samantha, Her

Can you fall in love with someone’s voice? That’s certainly true for Her’s Theodore (played by Joaquin Phoenix) once Samantha (Scarlett Johansson) comes into his life. He and the artificially intelligent virtual assistant hit it off during Spike Jonze’s critically acclaimed sci-fi film, but it’s not to be forever. In the end, Samantha chooses to join other AIs once her operating system seeks more knowledge outside of him. 

Ennis & Jack, Brokeback Mountain 

Ang Lee’s 2005 film Brokeback Mountain sees Jake Gyllenhaal’s rodeo cowboy Jack and Heath Ledger’s ranch hand Ennis falling in love in secret before leaving their relationship to live typical heterosexual lives with wives and kids. While they reconnect years after their first encounter, they never have a chance to really live happily with one another, and they have an especially tragic ending to their story by the time the movie concludes. 

Han Solo & Leia Organa, The Star Wars Movies 

One of the most iconic couples in movie history is Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and Carrie Fisher’s Leia Organa, who famously said the lines “I love you,” with “I know.” Unfortunately, when the Star Wars movies continued in 2015 with The Force Awakens, we learned that the couple had parted ways after having issues with losing their son Ben Solo to the Dark Side. Sadly, Han Solo also dies at the hands of Ben as well. 

Dani & Christian, Midsommar

We’re not over this breakup in particular because of how traumatizing it is to experience! Ari Aster’s Midsommar tells the story of a couple, who are strained as is but their vacation to a Swedish midsummer festival really becomes the cherry on top of its demise. The festival is a front for a pagan cult recruiting and the couple cement their breakup when Christian is stuffed inside a bear and burned alive whilst Dani watches in horror and becomes the newest crowned member. 

Rick & Ilsa, Casablanca

An especially classic breakup in cinema is the one between Humphrey Bogart’s Rick and Ingrid Bergman’s Ilsa at the end of 1942’s Casablanca. It’s about former lovers who reunite years after an affair. While one might expect their reunion to lead to the pair rekindling their love, Rick surprises Ilsa at the end of the movie by deserting her as she boards a plane because he feels she would be better off with her current fiancé. 

Peter Quill & Gamora - Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3

One of the sweetest couplings in the MCU once belonged to Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill and Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, who met during the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Sadly for the pair, Thanos’ plot to destroy half the universe caused a major rift between them (quite literally) when Thanos sacrificed Gamora to get the Soul Stone. There seemed to be a silver lining for the couple in Vol. 3 when Gamora returned, but during the final Guardians of the Galaxy movie’s ending, the pair went down separate paths. 

Celeste & Jesse, Celeste and Jesse Forever 

2012’s Celeste and Jesse Forever is a rather ironic title considering Rashida Jones’ Celeste and Andy Samberg’s Jesse don’t get a happily ever after. The movie is about high school sweethearts who marry young and decide to separate years later. Despite their separation, the former couple insist on remaining best friends, making for some funny and rather awkward situations between them. Ultimately, the couple need to let go and move on from each other. 

Gary & Brooke, The Break-Up

After Jennifer Aniston had starred in numerous romantic comedies over the years, the Friends actress changed things up with 2006’s The Break-Up alongside Vince Vaughn. The comedy follows a longtime couple that decides it's not working between them but refuses to move out of their condo. A lot of funny things go down when they become roommates following the breakup. While it could have been a setup for a sweet rekindling, they ultimately stay broken up. 

Oliver & Elio, Call Me By Your Name 

Call Me By Your Name is about 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet) who meets a handsome doctoral student Oliver (Armie Hammer) while spending the summer in Italy in 1983. The pair strike up a passionate love affair over the course of the sunny months, but sadly for Elio, it was only a fling. At the end of the film, Elio sits tearfully by the fireplace in winter as he learns Oliver has since become engaged. 

Nora & Hae Song, Past Lives 

Past Lives, which was such a powerful 2023 movie that it became one of the 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Picture, is about two childhood friends who cross paths on multiple fronts throughout their lives. Greta Lee plays Nora, a Korean woman who has to say goodbye to her best friend Hae Song (Teo Yoo) as a kid when her family immigrated to New York. As adults, Hae Song visits Nora in the Big Apple, after she’s already been married. There’s a sense that the couple missed out on something special, but as the ending illustrates, they’ll have to perhaps wait for their next life to see their lives align. 

Rhett & Scarlett, Gone With The Wind

One of the most tragic love stories in cinema is certainly 1939’s Gone With The Wind between Clark Gable’s Rhett Butler and Vivien Leigh’s Scarlett O’Hara. With the backdrop of the Civil War behind it, the sprawling epic brings together Rhett and Scarlett during the war’s dire circumstances, leading to their marriage and the birth of their daughter Bonnie Blue. However, when Scarlett’s initial crush Ashley comes between them, Rhett leaves her under the morning fog glow and she is heartbroken. 

Noah & Allie, The Notebook

A particularly sad breakup in the movies comes via 2004’s The Notebook. When the movie begins, two teens, Allie and Noah (Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling) from the opposite side of the tracks fall in love. However, Allie’s parents put a rift between them and they don’t see each other for years. Little does Allie know that after their breakup, Noah wrote to her every day for an entire year and her mother kept them from her. Lucky for this romance, it ends in a happy (yet very bittersweet way) down the road. 

Jerry & Dorothy, Jerry Maguire

In 1996’s Jerry Maguire, which is one of Tom Cruise’s best performances ever, the actor’s character of Jerry and Renée Zellweger’s Dorothy have an incredibly grounded and quite sad breakup scene when they realize they don’t want the same things anymore. The sequence really tugs at the heartstrings because Jerry had started to bond with Dorothy’s young son Ray since their marriage. 

Alice & Dan, Closer

In 2004’s Closer, Jude Law’s Dan leaves Natalie Portman’s Alice heartbroken when he confesses he’s been cheating on her. As she protests the breakup, he admits he’s “selfish” as she cries in his arms. She asks him to make tea, but while he’s preparing it she jets out the door and he never sees her again. 

Nicole & Charlie, Marriage Story

Breakups are always more difficult when children are involved. In 2019’s Marriage Story, audiences get a chance to see the pitfalls that come with divorce as a successful theater director Charlie (Adam Driver), and his wife and actress Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) go through the motions of ending their marriage. 

Bernadine & John, Waiting To Exhale 

In 1995’s Waiting To Exhale, Angela Bassett’s Bernadine, who is the mother of two kids, has spent much of her adult life shelving her career aspirations to raise her children. So we really feel the sting when she finds out that her husband of eleven years has been cheating on her with his bookkeeper and plans to divorce her. Of course, Bernadine gets her revenge by sending her ex’s car up in flames. 

Peter & Sarah, Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Sometimes the worst breakups are about the timing of it all, and we’re definitely not over this super awkward one in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. In the 2008 comedy, Kristen Bell’s Sarah dumps her longtime boyfriend Peter (Jason Segel) while he’s butt naked in their apartment. Then, they both run into each other in Oahu where Peter runs into Sarah and her new man, Aldous (Russell Brand). It’s funny as a movie, but gosh this is a nightmarish scenario! 

Danny & Debbie, About Last Night

In the 2014 movie, Michael Ealy and Paula Patton’s Danny and Debbie relationship blossoms and then falls apart during the movie’s runtime. It all comes to a head during a New Year’s Eve party that leads Debbie to move out. Thankfully, in the case of this movie, the pair do makeup by the end of the film! 

Katie & Hubbell, The Way We Were

1973’s romantic drama The Way We Were, had Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford playing lovers amidst their experiences with the House Un-American Activities Committee. Despite their differing opinions, they fall for each other, get married, and have kids. Their different beliefs ultimately drive them apart, but at least they get an epic kiss goodbye at the end.  

Dean & Cindy, Blue Valentine

Marriage is hard work. In 2010’s Blue Valentine, Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling depicted a rather grounded couple’s story in a narrative that impressively plays with timelines. The working-class romance is a tragic one that puts the spotlight on how ego can be the pitfall of a once passionate love.  

Emma & Adele, Blue Is The Warmest Color

French award darling Blue Is The Warmest Color had us messed up following watching Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos’ Emma and Adèle fall in love only to fall apart. The 2013 movie follows the two women across many years as they become closer, only for some major blemishes in their relationship to lead to an emotional breakup that changes them forever. 

Julianne & Michael, My Best Friend’s Wedding

There’s something romantic about marrying your best friend, as Julia Roberts’ Julianne hopes to do during My Best Friend’s Wedding, but her motivations are so crossed. Throughout the movie, she tries to break up Dermot Mulroney’s Michael with Cameron Diaz’s Kim, but ultimately she realizes Michael is not the one for her. It’s still a sweet wedding as another one of her BFF’s surprises her at his wedding and they dance the night away. 

Su & Chow, In The Mood For Love

There’s nothing quite like the romantic tension that Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung created in 2000’s In The Mood For Love. The movie is about two Shanghainese expatriates Su and Chow, who are already married, but fall into an emotional affair with one another as they learn of each being cheated on by their spouses. However, the tension never explodes into the affair we want it to as the movie ends with Chow confessing his love in a hole in a temple wall rather than to Su. 

Ben & Janine - He’s Just Not That Into You

He’s Just Not That Into You is one of those romantic comedies that follows a series of intertwined couples played by A-list actors. The most cutting arc in the movie is perhaps as Jennifer Connelly’s Janine realizes her husband Ben (Bradley Cooper) has been cheating on her with his yoga instructor Anna (Scarlett Johansson) amidst her slaving over house renovations for their place. After a particularly awkward moment between Ben, Janine, and Anna, Janine figures it all out and sends Ben packing. 

Evan & Kayleigh - The Butterfly Effect 

In 2004’s science fiction thriller, The Butterfly Effect, Ashton Kutcher plays Evan, a man who learns he can travel back in time and alter the past, present, and future. Sadly for Evan, as he discovers this power, he is met with the reality that his love Kayleigh (Amy Smart) often has traumatic fates if he is with her. By the end of the movie, he has to use his powers to make sure they are not together and she never even knew him. What could be worse than a breakup that the other person doesn’t even know about or experienced?

Before the end of the year, Timothée Chalamet will take us to a world of pure imagination when he takes on the role of the world-famous chocolatier and candy maker, Willy Wonka, in Paul King’s upcoming movie, Wonka. A perfect choice for the part played by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp in previous adaptations of Roald Dahl’s beloved and quirky character, Chalamet has more than a few performances under his belt that showcase all the ways in which he is perfect to take on such a well-known figure like Willy Wonka...

The French Dispatch (2021)

Wes Anderson’s 2021 anthology comedy, The French Dispatch, features tremendous performances from the likes of Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Jeffrey Wright, and other stars, including Timothée Chalamet, who appears in the delightful chapter titled, “Revisions to a Manifesto.” 

This hilarious and impactful episode follows journalist Lucinda Krementz (Frances McDormand) as she is sent to cover the “Chessboard Revolution,” a student revolt led in part by Zeffirelli (Chalamet), a romantic and existential youth who has one problem: he’s having trouble writing the group’s manifesto. With wild hair, a rather thin mustache, and a love of life, liberty, and rebellion, it’s hard to not get swept away by his presence. Though in over his head, Zeffirelli is a lightning rod, quite literally, and it’s a demonstration of Chalamet’s ability to find the balance between quirkiness and earnestness with a character.

Little Women (2019)

In Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, Timothée Chalamet took on the role of Theodore “Laurie” Laurence, who’s a close friend of (and later proposes to marry) Jo March (Saoirse Ronan). Though the character had been played by the likes of Douglass Montgomery and Christian Bale in the 1933 and 1994 film versions respectively, Chalamet best captured the youthfulness, likeability, and joyful nature of the beloved Laurie.

There’s a scene very early on in the movie where Jo and Laurie have a splendid time at a party. While the rest of the guests dance and laugh about in a luxurious ballroom, the two free spirits have fun of their own while outside. Acting prim and proper when in front of windows looking into the party, the two frolic and trash about when hidden from view in one of the most cheerful and intoxicating scenes in the entire movie. If Chalamet can channel even an ounce of the charisma he had in Little Women, we’re in for a real treat with Wonka.

Call Me By Your Name (2017)

Though far more dramatic than his performances in The French Dispatch and Little Women, Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Elio Perlman in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name is a performance that has us excited for Wonka. This swirling and beautifully shot movie about forbidden love between a 17-year-old and a graduate student (played by Armie Hammer) shows a side of Chalamet that is both endearing and enchanting.

There are no song-and-dance numbers (though Sufjan Stevens’ “Mystery of Love” is a delight) and Chalamet plays a hopeless romantic dealing with his first love, but there’s something so pure, innocent, and exposed about his portrayal that is nothing short of magical. Like Willy Wonka, Elio is open to life and new experiences, no matter the cost.

A Rainy Day In New York (2019)

Numerous actors have played the “Woody Allen” character in the filmmaker’s various movies over the years, including Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris), John Cusack (Bullets Over Broadway), and Jesse Eisenberg (Cafe Society), in that they portray slightly humorous and exhaustingly neurotic protagonists. Another name on that list is Timothée Chalamet, who plays Gatsby Welles, a brainy, eccentric, and charming college student in A Rainy Day in New York.

Throughout the movie, Gatsby gets separated from his girlfriend (played by Elle Fanning) after she goes off to interview a famous director for the school paper and then stumbles into an actress (played by Selena Gomez), with whom he falls madly in love. Chalamet is captivating in his portrayal of a young hopeless romantic trying to find himself and true love in the Big Apple and has this tremendous sense of youth and electricity that carries much of the movie. Despite his flaws, of which there are many, it’s hard not to be enamored of his very person.

Lady Bird (2017)

Two years before appearing in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women adaptation, Timothée Chalamet had a supporting role in the filmmaker’s solo writing/directorial debut, Lady Bird. In the movie, which centers around Saoirse Ronan’s titular character, Chalamet takes on the role of her teenage crush, Kyle Scheible, a confident and somewhat mysterious popular kid at her Sacramento high school. 

Yeah, he’s kind of a teenage dirtbag and isn’t as pure and innocent as initially appears, but Chalamet’s character is just so cool and mysterious it’s almost impossible to hate him. This isn’t to say Willy Wonka will be anything like that, but the chocolatier, like Kyle, has always had this element of mystery that adds so much depth to the various adaptations.

Beautiful Boy (2018)

Felix van Groeningen’s 2018 biographical drama, Beautiful Boy, centers on the tumultuous father-son relationship shared by David Sheff (Steve Carell) and Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet) and tells a heartbreaking yet uplifting story about addiction, redemption, and unconditional love between a parent and child. Based on the memoirs written by both the father and son, this endearing drama is full of highs and lows, and everywhere in between, all of which work to make this an unforgettable film.

This isn’t the happy-go-lucky Chalamet character like we’ve seen in the trailers and promotional material for Wonka, but it is still a role that has us excited to see what the actor does when playing one of Roald Dahl’s most famous characters. The dynamic range of the young actor and the way he handles himself in incredibly difficult situations is something to behold, to say the least.

Timothée Chalamet has proven time and time again that he is one of the most talented and versatile actors on the planet, and hopefully, this small sample of his work stands as a testament to that. Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest filmmakers alive today, and Timothée Chalamet is one of our most promising young actors. Which is why when the two decided to team up for a Bleu de Chanel campaign, it caused quite a stir online. Photos of the two shooting the commercial in New York went viral, with many fans excited about the superstar collaboration. While the desire to work with Scorsese was an expressed desire by Chalamet, it was the actor’s performances in Call Me By Your Name and Dune that made the Goodfellas director want to work with him as well. 

In a recent video from GQ, Chalamet had the opportunity to sit down with Scorsese to ask him questions about filmmaking, and chat about their experience working together on the Chanel ad campaign. Scorsese talked about being approached by the designer brand to do the commercial, and what about Chalamet’s past performances drew him to the Lady Bird actor. The filmmaker said:

Being praised for a performance by Martin Scorsese is a high accomplishment for an actor, and it is definitely deserved. Call Me By Your Name and Dune are two of Chalamet's best films, and the 27-year-old is incredible in both. It was clearly this ability to adapt to wildly differing material that drew the director to the actor. Scorsese has a knack for identifying young stars and pulling showstopping performances out of them, which he did with frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, and even a young Jodie Foster back in the day. With Chalamet’s knack for choosing interesting, director-driven projects, it’s no surprise Scorsese was drawn to him as well. 

The Bleu de Chanel campaign has yet to be released, but based on behind-the-scenes footage, it is a romantic short film that captures a rainy day in New York City. The setting is perfect for the collaborators, as both Scorsese and Chalamet famously both helm from the big apple. Chalamet was already an ambassador for the brand, participating in a number of fragrance campaigns, and Scorsese directed a commercial for the fragrance back in 2010 with French actor Gaspard Ulliel. He has done a number of ads for other brands as well, like Dolce & Gabbana and Emporio Armani.

Maybe this small scale collaboration will evolve into something bigger for the duo, As they seem to have enjoyed working together. Scorsese has already decided upon his next project, The Wager which will once again star DiCaprio in the leading role. Maybe there’s room for Chalamet in the cast as well. DiCaprio and Chalamet have also worked together before on 2021’s Don’t Look Up, and the Oscar winner has even acted as a mentor to the Dune: Part Two star on the film. We will have to wait and see as more information about The Wager is released, but in the meantime fans can be excited about this Chanel campaign from two incredible creatives.

To put it bluntly, Call Me By Your Name has one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful endings I’ve ever seen. After showing this gorgeous whirlwind of a summer fling, Luca Gadagnino uses his directorial mastery to rip the rug out from under us, and Timothée Chalamet gives an absolutely devastating performance as Eilo, culminating in the moving, sad and somewhat hopeful ending of Call Me By Your Name. 

Since this movie's release, its star Timothée Chalamet has made amazing projects, including another film with Luca Guadagnino, and being the lead of the Dune: Part 2 cast. However, I think Call Me By Your Name will always remain some of his best work. A big reason for this is the wonderfully emotional performance he gives as Elio, especially at the end. It's his performance, mixed with a thought-provoking monologue from Michael Stuhlbarg, that really helps wrap up this perfectly packaged coming-of-age story.

What Happens At The End? 

The final act of the film begins with Elio and Oliver (Armie Hammer) going on a little trip together. It’s a romantic getaway, however, they’re both keenly aware that this could be the end of their relationship. Elio is a changed person at the end of this whirlwind romance, and because of how life-changing this season was for him, he’s clearly devastated about Oliver leaving him. 

The film comes to a close months after their separation and Elio's conversation with his dad about the relationship. When winter arrives, Elio receives a surprise call from Oliver. In the final moments, we see them "call me by your name" one last time, and it ends with our protagonist crying. All these moments truly culminate into a gorgeous ending, that will leave you heartbroken. I think Manohla Dargis’ NYT review encapsulates the overall feeling of the ending perfectly:

“He loves, and in loving, he becomes.” What a perfect way to encapsulate what happens at the end of Guadagnino’s film. However, there are three major moments that get us to this point, so let’s break them down. 

What Is The Greater Meaning Of Elio's Dad's Monologue?  

Arguably, one of the best scenes in this whole film is the conversation between Elio and his father, Mr. Perlman. While never obvious, this speech clearly shows how much empathy Stuhlbarg’s character has for his son.

He mentions envying Elio’s relationship, but also notes how much he loves that his son found love in the carefully worded monologue. Overall, this moment between father and son is hopeful, while he’s not outwardly acknowledging what happened, he’s noting that Elio should not be ashamed or bury his feelings, he should feel them. The final lines of Elio’s dad’s monologue are:

I’ve teetered back and forth with the meaning of this monologue. Is Elio’s father a closeted gay man who wanted to have what Elio and Oliver had? Is he simply acknowledging that he knew what was going on with Elio? It’s unclear, but one thing is for sure, Chalamet’s character is fully supported by his father. 

This revelation shows Elio, and the audience, that he’s not alone in this sad moment. It also means this speech and advice is coming from a man who knows exactly what he’s going through, and it’s reaffirming to know that things will get better, so long as you find joy in everything. In my interpretation of the film, I see this moment as the reason Elio feels allowed to feel his feelings in the final moments of the film after the phone call he receives from Oliver.

Why Was That Phone Call So Devastating? 

Following the monologue from Mr. Perlman, the film flashes forward from the end of summer to sometime in the winter. We see Eilo walk into his house, seemingly happy and listening to music. The phone rings, and he picks it up. It’s Oliver. Of course, it’s Oliver. 

You can feel the simultaneous excitement and dread in Chalamet’s performance as he speaks to his first love. They talk for a bit, before Elio’s parents hop on the line to excitedly say hello. We find out Oliver is engaged, to a woman, and in response Elio calls Oliver by his name, evoking the title of the movie, and sending both of them back to their first romantic moments together. 

Oliver then ends the call by saying “I remember everything.” Showing that this summer didn’t mean nothing to him, making this moment all the more heartbreaking. Following the phone call, Elio walks into the living room, and cries. 

Why Elio Crying Through The Credits Is So Impactful

To make the ending of this film even more raw, the final minutes of Call Me By Your Name are simply Elio crying. After he hangs up the phone, he walks over to the fireplace, curls up, and starts crying. It’s a culmination of these final two moments: the monologue and the phone call. Chalamet’s character is letting himself feel all these feelings, and bask in the joy and the sadness that was this life-changing summer. 

On top of the moments that culminated in this one, the performance Chalamet gives at the end is also stunning. It proves why he got an Oscar nomination for this performance, and why he hasn’t stopped working since – I mean in 2023 alone he has two major movies coming out with the Wonka origin story and Dune: Part 2. He doesn’t say anything, he just cries, but you can see the range of emotions he’s feeling so clearly, and it’s beautiful. When it came to filming the scene the actor explained how they went about creating this profoundly moving moment, explaining in the DVD commentary, via Out: 

As he noted, this is not a bunch of cuts stitched together, it’s one take. You see him feel his emotions, process his life, and bask in this love in the final minutes of the film. Creating a perfect, and heartbreaking ending. 

There are many reasons why Call Me By Your name received great reviews when it came out, and why it’s so beloved all these years later. However, the way it ends is why it sticks with you, or at least why it stuck with me, and it gives this story about summer love a breathtaking, tragic and beautiful ending.

Back in 2017, filmmaker Luca Guadagnino released his LGBTQ+ love story Call Me By Your Name. Guadagnino has long expressed interest in producing some sequels, and he still wants to. But will he bring back Hammer as Oliver? Here’s his thoughts.

Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer’s performance in Call Me By Your Name were both praised upon its release, but the latter actor has since fallen into some hard times. Hammer has been accused of abuse by multiple women, and for having cannibalistic fantasies. He’s been out of the public eye as a result, leading moviegoers to wonder about the possible future of the franchise. Luca Guadagnino was recently asked by Variety if he’s still interested in doing a Call Me By Your Name sequel and he responded with:

Could this be the start of a Call Me By Your Name cinematic universe? One sequel seemed like a clear idea for the future of the story, but it sounds like Luca Guadagnino would like to go even further. Namely because he wants to work with the ensemble of actors that brought his original 2017 movie together. But does that include Armie Hammer?

Luca Guadagnino’s comments to Variety come as he’s promoting his upcoming cannibal thriller Bones & All, which also stars Timothée Chalamet. Eventually the conversation turned to the possibility of more Call Me movies, as he had previously expressed interest in a sequel set 15 years later in the 1990’s. Since Guadagnino is so interested, Variety asked if he’d include Armie Hammer's character Oliver in these potential projects. He responded by saying:

Well, there you have it. While Armie Hammer has been “cancelled” and has been seemingly trying to stay away from the public eye, it seems like Luca Guadagnino would be down with working with him again on another Call Me By Your Name. Given the serious nature of the allegations made against Hammer, this comment is sure to quickly circulate online. Of course, there’s no guarantee that these movies will ever actually come together.

Following the allegations made against Armie Hammer, he dropped out of a variety of projects including Jennifer Lopez’s Shotgun Wedding. He was promptly dropped by his representation, and a documentary about his family and the allegations was produced titled House of Hammer. It’s unclear how the legal situation surrounding these accusers might ultimately play out.

The allegations surrounding Armie Hammer indicate that he had fantasies about cannibalism that he reportedly shared with his romantic partners. This ongoing controversy (and allegations of sexual assault) resulted in him losing jobs like his role in Jennifer Lopez’s Shotgun Wedding. Given his Call Me By Your Name connection with both Chalamet and Guadagnino, many moviegoers have found it odd that their next movie will be about a cannibalistic couple (watch the trailer here). The acclaimed filmmaker was recently asked by Deadline about this discourse, saying: 

Well, there you have it. While the allegations made against Armie Hammer date back to January of 2021, it appears that Luca Guadagnino didn’t see the connection while working on his new movie Bones & All with Timothée Chalamet. But that hasn’t stopped plenty of folks online from making the connection, especially as the documentary surrounding Hammer is going to be released so soon, and he continues to make headlines.

Luca Guadagnino’s comments to Deadline might surprise some fans, given how much chatter has occurred surrounding Bones & All and its possible connection to allegations made against Armie Hammer in real-life. But part of being a great filmmaker is focusing on the material, rather than allowing outside voices to influence the work. Later in the same interview, Guadagnino further explained his feeling son the matter, saying:

And just like that, Luca Guadagnino has set the record straight on Bones & All, and how little Armie Hammer’s legal situation ultimately factored into its production. As he pointed out, the project was in the works long before these allegations came to life. What's more, Guadagnino wants his upcoming movie to stand on its own without the chatter about his Call Me By Your Name actor’s personal life.

Timothée Chalamet has been putting in some serious work as of late, as the 26-year-old star is coming off a massive year, during which he appeared in three high-profile films. As you’d imagine, Chalamet has other upcoming movies on the docket, one of which will reunite him with a former collaborator. The Oscar-nominated star is set to reteam with Luca Guadagnino, who directed him and Armie Hammer in the critically acclaimed Call Me by Your Name. The two joined forces on a cannibal movie, which has officially dropped a first-look image. 

The upcoming movie, titled Bones and All, recently landed at MGM, which scored the worldwide distribution rights, per THR. The coming-of-age, romance horror flick kicked off production in May 2021 before wrapping in July 2021. Admirers of Timothée Chalamet and Luca Guadagnino have surely been chomping at the bit to see what they’ve been working on. While they’ll have to wait a bit longer for actual footage, the first image (shared via Discussing Film’s Twitter) provides a beautiful look at what’s sure to be a gruesome film. Take a look:

2017’s Call Me by Your Name (which is streamable with a Hulu subscription) was praised for its striking scenic shots and, though it’s early, it would appear we’ll be able to say the same about this new film. The image above appears to show the Dune star alongside co-lead Taylor Russell. While it only amounts to a small tease in the grand scheme of things, the still may be enough to get movie lovers chatting about the upcoming feature. Plus, this actually makes for an appropriate warm-up, as some of the subsequent images for the cannibal movie may be a bit more… “striking,” let’s say.

As Timothée Chalamet and Luca Guadagnino look forward to the release of their new movie, it’s honestly hard not to think about what’s transpired with their former collaborator, Armie Hammer. The actor became the center of controversy in January 2021 after getting embroiled in a sex scandal, which involved a viral DM that described cannibalistic acts among other things. After dropping out of several projects, Hammer reportedly entered a treatment program and, by December, the Man from U.N.C.L.E. star had left rehab.

Ahead of the controversy, the Call Me by Your Name director had voiced his intention to produce a sequel, though those plans seem to have stalled. He and Timothée Chalamet seem to have wasted no time shifting gears, however. Bones and All, which is an adaptation of Camille DeAngelis’ novel of the same name, centers on a young woman who embarks on a cross-country roadtrip to locate the father she never knew. In the process, she hopes to learn why she has the vicious tendency to kill and devour those she cares for the most. Chalamet and Taylor Russell star alongside André Holland, Michael Stuhlbarg, David Gordon-Green, Francesca Scorsese, Chloë Sevigny and Mark Rylance.

An intriguing premise, a stacked cast and a skilled director? I’d say this has the potential to be another instant classic from Luca Guadagnino. Hopefully, he can balance the heart and gore and deliver a grotesquely sweet movie.

There have been a great number of music biopics over the years, and it’s safe to say that James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown is deserving of a spot on that list. Released in late 2024, this long-awaited drama follows a young Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) as he rises through the ranks of the American folk movement and pop culture of the early 1960s. Exploring the man, his songs, and the legend that has followed him over the years, the movie paints a brilliant portrait of one of music’s most brilliant minds.

Chalamet is utterly perfect in his portrayal of the legendary folk singer, and his performance is made even better by his commitment to learning and playing the songs instead of taking the easy road. And you know, it wouldn’t be surprising if he played spoiler at the Academy Awards.

Dune (2021)

Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 sci-fi epic, Dune, which adapted the first half of Frank Hubert’s landmark novel of the same name, follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he travels to the desert planet of Arrakis as his father is put in control the formidable location. But the young and gifted future heir finds himself in a perilous situation after his family is betrayed by powerful forces, sending him into exile.

Chalamet, already an established star by the time he was cast in the lead role in Dune, became an even bigger name after his commanding performance in this sci-fi thriller. Though you could credit co-stars Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Oscar Isaac for helping the young actor in this regard, there’s no denying his on-screen presence.

Dune: Part Two (2024)

Denis Villeneuve continued his epic sci-fi adventure in March 2024 with the release of Dune: Part Two, which essentially covered the second half of Frank Hubert’s beloved novel of the same name. Set not long after the first film, this massively successful and Oscar-nominated sequel followed Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) in his quest to unite the Fremean to take on House Harkonnen and get revenge for everything they did.

However, the Atreides Chalamet plays in Dune: Part Two is far from the young and inexperienced man he was in the first film. Blinded by ambition, revenge, and his cult of personality, the Muad'Dib becomes something between the hero he was and the villain he tries not to become.

Wonka (2023)

In December 2023, after what seemed like years of anticipation, Paul King released his Wonka musical starring Timothée Chalamet as the iconic chocolatier. Set years before the events of the previous adaptations of Roald Dahl’s classic novel, this charming and fantastical cinematic experience followed the whimsical, optimistic, and imaginative candy maker as he attempted to make a name for himself despite the best efforts of the bitterly jealous “Chocolate Cartel.”

If you’re looking for a vibrant and enchanting performance from Chalamet, then look no further, for this surprisingly successful box office hit has it and then some more. His version of Willy Wonka, with his dreams of opening his own chocolate and changing the world, is nothing short of magical.

The French Dispatch (2021)

IMDb Rating: 7.1/10

One of the best Wes Anderson movies, 2021’s The French Dispatch essentially plays like a magazine come to life. Centering on the final issue of a fictional publication after its founder and editor (played by Bill Murray) passes away, the movie is split into three short films about art, life, and culture, with small interstitials peppered in between.

Timothée Chalamet pops up in the second short film, “Revisions to a Manifesto,” a black-and-white exploration of a student protest, its de facto leader Zeffirelli (Chalamet), and a journalist named Lucinda Krementz (Frances McDormand) sent in to cover the whole ordeal. Though we’re still trying to make sense of The French Dispatch ending and how this short plays into its overall message, this movie is full of incredible performances like the one given by Chalamet.

Bones And All (2022)

Five years after working with Luca Guadagnino on Call Me By Your Name, Timothée Chalamet teamed up with the Italian filmmaker once more for the 2022 romantic horror film, Bones and All. The movie follows Maren Yearly (Taylor Russell) and Lee (Chalamet), two young lovers and cannibals who go on a cross-country trip to find their roots. Being pursued by the eccentric and terrifying Sully (Mark Rylance), the couple learn a great deal about their respective pasts and each other.

A movie that will leave you with a lot of feelings, Bones and All is another example of Chalamet’s incredible composure and chemistry with his co-stars on screen. This may be too much for the squeamish to handle, but this is worth a watch.

Don’t Look Up (2021)

Adam McKay’s 2021 Netflix original film, Don’t Look Up is as funny as it is maddening and beautiful as it is terrifying with its story about two scientists (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) as they try to warn the world that an asteroid will soon collide with Earth and wipe out all of humanity. What should be a simple task turns into anything but thanks to an uninterested media, megalomaniacal billionaires, and an incapable government.

Though he’s not at the forefront of the movie, and is only introduced partway through its runtime, this satirical comedy still features one of Timothée Chalamet’s best performances with his portrayal of a young shoplifter named Yule. Without giving too much away, the character has a big moment in the final minutes of the Don’t Look Up ending.

Call Me By Your Name (2017)

Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 adaptation of André Aciman’s acclaimed coming-of-age drama, Call Me By Your Name, spends a summer following a love affair shared by 17-year-old Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet), and Oliver (Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old graduate assistant working with Elio’s father. What starts off as a friendship quickly unfolds into something more, something that challenges convention and opens Elio’s young eyes to the world and his own heart.

Timothée Chalamet received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his commanding performance of the young and naive Elio, a portrayal that immediately made him one of the most promising actors in Hollywood and took his career to the next level. He hasn’t looked back since.

Lady Bird (2018)

Greta Gerwig’s 2017 drama Lady Bird centers on Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) as she dreams of escaping her childhood home in Sacramento, California, to move far away to a “city with culture” and attend some prestigious college. This puts her at odds with her loving yet overbearing mother, Marion McPherson (Laurie Metcalf), who means well but doesn’t want to see her daughter leave.

Although he’s not the main focus of Lady Bird (that honor rightfully goes to Saoirse Ronan and her lights-out performance here), Chalamet makes it seem as if the Kyle Scheible character was not just written for him, but based on him. He’s so cool and confident, you can’t help but watch, even if he’s a massive jerk in this game-changing female-directed film.

Little Women (2019)

Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet starred in another Greta Gerwig movie, this time the 2019 adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. Told over the course of many years, the film explores Josephine March’s (Ronan) tight bond with her sisters and childhood best friend, Theodore “Laurie” Laurence (Chalamet), though she claims she needs no man to find happiness and fulfillment in life.

Some of the best scenes in Little Women are those shared by Jo and Laurie, especially the beautifully shot scene when Laurie proposes to his lifelong friend only for her to turn him down. As the scene concludes, Laurie says Jo will find someone to marry and be happy and all he’ll be able to do is watch.

Interstellar (2014)

One of Christopher Nolan’s best movies, Interstellar follows former NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) as he's sent to the far reaches of space to explore what could give the citizens of a dying Earth a second shot at survival. When he embarks upon this decades-long journey into the unknown, Cooper leaves behind two young children — Murphy (Mackenzie Foy/Jessica Chastain) and Tom (Timothée Chalamet/Casey Affleck) — not knowing if he’ll see them ever again.

Timothée Chalamet, who appears in only his second film role, doesn’t get all that much screen time in Interstellar since the main focus is on Joseph and Murphy Cooper’s father-daughter relationship, but he makes the most of what little time he gets.

Beautiful Boy (2018)

Felix van Groeningen’s 2018 drama, Beautiful Boy, tells the story of a tumultuous father-son relationship shared by New York Times writer David Sheff (Steve Carell) and his son, Nicholas (Timothée Chalamet), as the former attempts to help the latter battle drug addiction. Based on two separate memoirs written by the pair, this heart-wrenching story of the dangers of addiction and the undying love a father has for his son will break your heart while also giving you hope.

Carell and Chalamet are both outstanding in Beautiful Boy and make the movie something that you will find yourself thinking about long after the credits roll. At times, it seems like these aren’t two actors on a film set but a father and son making sense of life in one of the best movies on Amazon.

The King (2019)

David Michôd’s 2019 war epic, The King, which is based on William Shakespeare’s Henriad tells the story of King Henry V of England (Timothée Chalamet) as he goes from an emotionally distant and uninterested heir to the throne, to a king who's left to make sense of the world following the death of his brother and father.

Although there isn’t as much action as some would have preferred, The King remains a strikingly beautiful drama held together by brilliant acting and strong writing. In addition to the outstanding performance by Chalamet, The King also boasts some great turns by Joel Edgerton, Robert Pattinson, Lily-Rose Depp, Ben Mendelsohn, and Dean-Charles Chapman.

A Rainy Day In New York (2019)

The 2019 Woody Allen romantic comedy A Rainy Day in New York follows Gatsby Welles (Timothée Chalamet) and Ashleigh Enright (Elle Fanning) as they travel to the Big Apple so that Ashleigh can interview a famous movie director for their college newspaper. What starts as a romantic weekend getaway for the wide-eyed couple quickly turns into one big misadventure with each getting caught up in their own struggles apart from one another.

Both leads are phenomenal in A Rainy Day in New York, but Timothée Chalamet’s Gatsby Wells really steals the show with his ambition, boyish charm, and understanding of the ins, outs, and chaos of New York City. The supporting cast, which includes Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Diego Luna, and Liev Schreiber ties both storylines together.

It is no surprise that whenever one of us starts any given Pixar movie we immediately hold it to a higher standard simply because of the studio’s proven track record of producing hit after hit for more than a quarter-century. That can be said for Luca, the studio’s latest animated adventure about a sea monster obsessed with humans who becomes the thing he admires and his parents fear. This transfixing and ambitious coming-of-age story made for one of the most enjoyable summer 2021 movies and allowed us to escape the hustle and bustle of our lives and go off to director Enrico Casarosa’s version of the Italian Riviera.

After watching the beautifully written and expertly executed story, you may be looking for other movies like Luca. Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)

Upon turning 13 years old, a young witch by the name of Kiki moves to a seaside town along with her talking cat, Jiji, to spend a year alone training, as per tradition. To hone her skills, make a little money, and make friends in her new home, Kiki begins a special delivery service, making the most out of her flying broom. The journey, however, isn’t all fun and games, especially when self-doubt sets in, potentially ruining everything.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Luca**:** The presence of the 1989 Studio Ghibli classic Kiki’s Delivery Service can be felt throughout Luca and is a perfect companion piece. Sure, there are the seaside town comparisons and main characters setting off on life-changing adventures, but there is also something more here. Both of these movies do a brilliant job of touching on the fear, isolation, and struggles of following your dreams as well as the triumph of victory.

Up (2009)

When his wife falls ill and dies just before they are to set off on a journey they had been planning since childhood, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen (Edward Asner) equips his house with hundreds of balloons and sets off for Paradise Falls where a life-changing adventure awaits.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Luca**:** The 2009 Pixar instant-classic Up (which has one of the most heartbreaking openings in the studio’s history) does a great job of showing that it’s never too late to wreck the status quo and break out on your own on a meaningful adventure. Like Luca, this adventure film shows what great things can come when you leave your comfort zone and open up to the world around you.

Ponyo (2008)

When off on a journey to the world beyond the ocean, Ponyo, a goldfish princess, meets and strikes up an immediate friendship with a human boy named Sosuke. But as Ponyo begins to spend more time above the surface of the water, the more human-like she becomes, which troubles her stern and protective father. Upon escaping her father’s kingdom, the real fun and danger begin for Ponyo and everyone in the nearby village.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Luca**:** Like with Kiki’s Delivery Service, it’s easy to see the ways in which Luca’s director, Enrico Casarosa, drew from Studio Ghibli and Ponyo in terms of storytelling, themes, and animation. With shapeshifting sea creatures, characters wanting to find their place in the world, and parents trying their hardest to protect their young from the dangers of the world, the comparisons are endless.

Pinocchio (1940)

When a lonely woodworker named Geppetto (Christian Rub) wishes that a recently finished puppet was a real boy, a fairy makes his dreams come true, resulting in the creation of Pinocchio. Although conscious, the wooden boy is naive and prone to the trickery of the cruel world beyond his creator’s wood shop, creating quite a dilemma.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Luca**:** Although it is never said outright in the movie where the events of Pinocchio take place, the 1883 fairytale on which it is based is set in a small seaside Italian village. Much like Luca, the 1940 Disney classic touches on how young and innocent characters deal with the unforgiving nature of the modern world and its most unsavory of characters. On top of that, both films do a great job of showing the lengths a parent will go to protect their children.

Coco (2017)

Paying both tribute and respect to Mexican culture much like Luca did with the Italian Riviera, this beautifully animated journey brings with it wonderful messages about following your dreams, being true to yourself, and what it means to be family.

Castle In The Sky (1986)

When a young orphan by the name of Sheeta escapes the government agent taking her to a military prison and a group of pirates attempting to steal a mysterious crystal around her neck, the princess sets off on a magical journey with a young orphan during which they discover a mythical floating city with an abundance of treasure.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Luca**:** The 1986 Studio Ghibli film Castle in the Sky doesn’t seem like it has a lot in common with Luca on the surface, but both films feature main characters who form an unbreakable bond with newfound friends from a different way of life and evade persecution and exploitation by society.

The Fox And The Hound (1981)

Call Me By Your Name (2017)

Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 romantic drama Call Me By Your Name tells the story 17-year-old Elio Perlman (Timothée Chalamet) who spends a summer falling in love with a small Italian village and Oliver (Armie Hammer), a doctoral student living with Elio’s family during break.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Luca**:** Even though Call Me By Your Name focuses on romance and Luca focuses solely on the friendship of Luca (Jacob Tremblay) and Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer) according to director Enrico Casarosa, there are still a great deal of similarities. First, both films share a similar aesthetic quality with their depiction of northern Italian seaside towns. On top of that, both deal with characters who find themselves on the fringes of society. It should be noted that Call Me By Your Name is rated R, just in case any parents were wondering.

Since the first trailer for Luca dropped, film fans were instantly reminded by Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 Oscar-winning movie, Call Me By Your Name. Both movies take place off the coast of Northern Italy and center on two male characters as they spend the summer together. Between the films’ comparable visual aesthetics and growing urges for Disney to make an LGBTQ+ positive movie, some fans would like to see the movie as summer love. And Jack Dylan Grazer, one of the movie’s famous voice actors, has some thoughts

Jack Dylan Grazer recently worked with Call Me By Your Name’s Luca Guadagnino for the HBO series We Are Who We Are. So we were curious about how the actor felt about Luca comparisons to the gay romance. In his words:

That's a fair response considering the characters at the center of Luca are young kids and the film is about their friendship as the sea monsters leave the ocean and explore the fictional Italian town of Portorosso. Even so, the 17-year-old already had a feeling that erotica about the characters was likely being written as we spoke.

Luca’s director Enrico Casarosa has also been asked about these comparisons as well, sharing in response that he was most interested in exploring “their friendship in that kind of pre-puberty world” without romance having a place in the story. That being said, many who have since seen the movie are latching onto some queer subtext in terms of its story as well. As one Twitter user shared:

Luca revolves around two sea monsters who try and fit in the town of Portorosso while they participate in a triathlon (who fear sea monsters) without villagers finding out about their true identity. At the end of the film, Luca decides to stop hiding who he is and finish the race as a sea monster and he is surprised to be met with acceptance. The movie ends with Luca going off to school with the risk involved of being bullied or hurt for his identity. As another fan said:

When speaking to Jack Dylan Grazer about the ending and if he’d like to see the characters return if there was a sequel, the actor liked the idea and said he thinks it would “be cool if we got back together and fell in love,” before adding a cheeky peach reference from Call Me By Your Name in reference to our earlier conversation. When speaking about the visual similarities to Luca and Guadagnino’s award winner, he said this:

Something directors often don’t want is people comparing their film to another movie already out, especially when the film in question hasn't even been released yet. Well, that’s exactly what is happening to Enricho Casarosa, the director of Pixar’s Luca. Would-be fans are saying that Luca is an adorably animated, kid version of Call Me By Your Name, a LGBTQ positive film also about two boys exploring the Italian countryside. Casarosa has spoken out to set the record straight concerning the comparisons that are being made between the two films.

During a press conference that CinemaBlend’s own Sarah El-Mahmoud attended, Enricho Casarosa said that he had no intention to make a romantic movie, and that he wanted to focus on a specific kind of friendship. This friendship will be the kind that comes before the complications of romantic interests. Here's what Casarosa specifically said:

This is a major difference between the two films, as Call Me By Your Name has a romantic tone and Luca is apparently more a story of childhood friendship - not summer love. In the same press conference, Enricho Casarosa went on further to specify that the main characters of Luca are a lot younger than those of Call Me By Your Name, and wouldn’t even be concerned with matters of love. When you think about it like that, the comparisons are really just based on some visual parallels. The Italian countryside has a distinct look to it that both films have captured, and the two lead males in both films look kind of similar. Another odd, albeit farfetched connection the two films have is that the director of Call Me By Your Name’s first name is Luca. Is that weird? A little, but definitely nothing to build a case on.

It's also worth noting is that both pairs of boys/men meet each other in the beginning of the films and build a relationship throughout the movies. However, we now know that those relationships are very different from one another.

Luca, although originally set to have a theatrical run, will exclusively be available on Disney+ this summer starting on June 18. If you were originally thinking that Luca was just another rendition of Call Me By Your Name, rest assured that it is its own unique film, so check it out when the time comes!

Timothee Chalamet and director Luca Guadagnino proved to make an excellent pair when they first had the opportunity to collaborate, with critics and audiences hailing Call Me by Your Name as one of the best films of 2017, and while we occasionally hear news about a possible sequel to that movie, now we have the news that they are set to reunite on a different project. And, weirdly enough, cannibalism is a part of the subject matter.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Luca Guadagnino has settled on Bones & All as his follow up to his stellar 2018 remake of the Italian horror classic Suspiria, and Timothee Chalamet has come aboard in a supporting role.

Based on the novel of the same name by author Camille DeAngelis, the movie will star Taylor Russell (Waves) as Maren Yearly, a young woman with a terrifying problem. From a very early age she has suffered from a compulsion to eat the people she loves, and as a result her childhood was spent with her mother regularly moving around so that nobody would discover Maren's terrible secret. When the protagonist is abandoned on her sixteenth birthday, she makes the decision to try and find her father, a man she doesn't know, and gain an understanding for why she does what she does.

The trade report doesn't mention what role that Timothee Chalamet will play, but it does call it a "starring" role. It should make for an interesting follow-up to everything that the young actor has going on in 2021. Because of the pandemic, none of his 2020 movies ended up being released, but that just means that we're getting Denis Villeneuve's Dune and Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch this year instead (though the latter hasn't secured a release date just yet). He is also part of the all-star cast featured in Adam McKay's new Netflix comedy Don't Look Up, which is expected to land on the streaming service before the end of December.

In addition to the developing Bones & All, Timothee Chalamet is also attached to play Bob Dylan in the upcoming James Mangold-directed biopic Going Electric. The actor landed that role all the way back in January of last year, but it appears that the Luca Guadagnino film may leapfrog it on Chalamet's schedule, as the cannibal coming-of-age movie is looking to start production in the spring (either in April or May).

That's not a lot of developing projects for a performer whose star is rising as fast as Timothee Chalamet's but perhaps he's trying to keep his schedule clear so that if Dune winds up being a massive hit he can be immediately ready to jump back into Paul Atreides' stillsuit.

Bones & All doesn't currently have a distributor attached, and therefore no set release date, but hopefully we'll learn more interesting news about it soon enough.

It’s been a long few days for Armie Hammer after reports broke indicating he may have sent some (unconfirmed) texts while still married about sexual cannibalism and other taboo topics. Hammer and his wife have since split. She took their kids to the Cayman Islands for quarantine while he did construction, and now the Call Me By Your Name actor is in some hot water with the Cayman Islands Miss Universe Committee after a new social media post came to light.

Apparently, Armie Hammer is one of those not-so-rare celebrities to have a private social media account. Unfortunately for the actor, he let someone in who then took screenshots of the account and got them to The Daily Mail. In one of the posts, Armie Hammer had made a not-so-choice comment about his wife and Miss Cayman Islands, one he then apologized to Miss Cayman Islands for.

In the image and post published over the weekend, Armie Hammer had made a comment about his ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers refusing to bring their children back to the States. In the post, he shared an image of a woman sprawled out on a bed in sexy lingerie. Her face is not visible, but it was accompanied with the comment:

Once the post broke wide, the Miss Cayman Islands Universe Committee was none too happy about what transpired and wrote to the Cayman Compass, noting:

The woman pictured in the post in question was not the current Miss Cayman Islands Mariah Tibbetts, whose platform through her tenure has been to raise awareness about cancer and work with the Cayman Islands Cancer Society. Her public posts on Instagram often reference God and a feeling of optimism, with a recent post about 2021 noting:

Armie Hammer Seemingly Confirms He Created The Miss Cayman Post In Public Apology

Unlike the previous posts that have been tied to Armie Hammer running around, Hammer has not called the post about Miss Cayman “bullshit.” Instead, he actually sent the Cayman Compass an audio segment that apologized for his role in the post of sexual nature rolling around. He called what happened a “foolish attempt” at comedy on social media, stating:

This is not the first time Armie Hammer has apologized for a comment that didn't go over as well as expected; he'd also previously apologized after making a critical comment about Stan Lee following his death. In this case, the Miss Cayman Islands Universe Committee had also requested that Armie Hammer remove the offending post and any posts of similar nature from his personal social media. It’s unclear if he complied with the request, but we do know the matter was handed over to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service to investigate.

I’d guess that potentially dealing with the Royal Cayman Islands Police on top of the cheating allegations and more were not how the actor anticipated spending the next few weeks.

It’s been a tumultuous few years for Woody Allen, yet he’s back on the scene now with a tell-all book describing his version of events as he says they’ve played out over the years. The new book, called Apropos of Nothing, includes a chapter in which Allen discusses Timothee Chalamet cutting ties with him after they filmed Rainy Day together. According to Allen, it was all a ploy for an Oscar bid.

The year old accusations against Woody Allen in regards to his daughter Dylan Farrow resurfaced was the same year that Timothee Chalamet starred in Call Me By My Name opposite Armie Hammer. It’s also the year Chalamet promised his salary from his work with Woody Allen on A Rainy Day In New York would go to Times Up and other organizations. Per Allen, this was just a Hollywood power play. He wrote:

The quote, which comes from an Apropos of Nothing excerpt (via EW) also mentions Woody Allen saying he “didn’t regret working with” Chalamet. The actor has not commented on Allen's take.

A Rainy Day in New York also starred Rebecca Hall, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Diego Luna, Elle Fanning and Liev Schreiber. The movie was supposed to be released on Amazon in 2019, but the company ultimately opted to shelve the movie and not give it a release. It marked the first time in decades a Woody Allen film did not get released in a given year. It did release elsewhere in the world, including in Europe and South America.

Meanwhile, Timothee Chalamet was not the only one to give away his earnings from his movie. Rebecca Hall also donated hers to Times Up. Selena Gomez in addition has given money to Times Up’s Legal Defense Fund. For his own part, Woody Allen has aggressively declared his innocence regarding allegations made by his ex-wife, daughter and other family members numerous times.

Timothee Chalamet did earn an Oscar nod in 2018, but the nomination came after he made the announcement about his working relationship with Woody Allen. He did not win the Oscar for Best Actor, losing to Gary Oldman (and his epic embodiment of Winston Churchill) in Darkest Hour.

Additionally, Timothee Chalamet is currently signed on to appear in Going Electric, which is a biopic centered around the younger years of Bob Dylan as he became a folk icon. Filmmakers can be very protective of their movies. If you spend two, three, four or more years working on a project, meticulously analyzing and re-analyzing every single facet of the project, you want it to be seen in its complete form. Compromises will be made, certainly, but there are a lot of auteurs who have fought hard to keep the movie they want to make intact. Therefore, when it comes to China's film board and their often-strict regulations for what can be permitted in their theaters, there are some filmmakers (or, rather, film studios) who'll willfully make changes if possible, but there are other moviemakers, like Quentin Tarantino, who will refuse to make concessions. Such was the case with 2019's Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood.

China only allows a limited number of United States movies into their theaters, and their strict rules and regulations have prevented many movies from being screened. Naturally, there are other examples of filmmakers who opted not to edit their films to seek approval from China's rigorous film board. In addition to Quentin Tarantino, there have been other cases where filmmakers wouldn't or simply couldn't update a movie to meet China's standards.

Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood)

The ninth film from writer/director Quentin Tarantino (or the tenth, depending on whether you consider Kill Bill one or two movies), Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood is centered around two deflated Hollywood performers: the washed-up, former big-shot '50s Western superstar Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is struggling to establish himself in a changing cinematic climate, and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), an experienced stunt double with a troubled past. Together, these two figures from Hollywood of yore weather through a town set to be shake from the looming presence of Charles Manson. While it serves as another chapter in Quentin Tarantino's revisionist history, it features a more lethargic feel, especially compared to the controversial director's past films, that plays to its benefit, allowing Tarantino to provide an ultimately more casual, reflective cinematic experience.

But Quentin Tarantino cannot escape controversy. Towards the middle of Tarantino's latest film, there is an extended scene where Cliff Booth has a tussle with Bruce Lee. The late martial arts movie star wasn't necessarily seen in a flattering light, to say the least, and Shannon Lee, the daughter of the late movie star, was openly critical of the director's depiction of her father. Since the movie's release, she has openly expressed her ill-feelings towards Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood. Also, Lee reportedly spoke with China's National Film Administration, which likely resulted in the movie's ban. Rather than cut the sequence out entirely, however, Tarantino opted to keep Once Upon A Time the way it is — even if resulted in the film not playing in Chinese theaters. While Tarantino cut scenes from Django Unchained out to let his seventh film play in China, he refused to cut it this time.

Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight)

Serving as the second chapter in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, 2008's The Dark Knight became one of the most acclaimed movies of the '00s and left an indelible mark for comic book adaptations, allowing the blockbuster genre to be open to more critical and commercial reception. The superhero story is widely celebrated for its masterful supporting performance from the late Heath Ledger, as well as its gloomy, moody aesthetic, in the vein of Michael Mann, which allowed for more gritty, intensive superhero movies to fall in its shadow. Few movies have reach its heights, however.

While The Dark Knight went on to become a worldwide phenomenon, it did not get a wide reception from China. That's because Christopher Nolan's acclaimed blockbuster ultimately did not screen for Chinese audiences, as the director and Warner Bros. decided it wasn't in their interests to edit the movie down to play in Chinese theaters. In fact, it appears that Nolan and WB didn't even go through the process of trying to get the movie past their censors, as they knew it would be a timely and difficult process that would ultimately take a lot of money and resources and likely prove unsuccessful. Rather than go through the intensive process of trying to edit The Dark Knight down to fit into their regulations, they decided not to release it in China.

Martin Scorsese (The Departed)

After decades of making great movies, Martin Scorsese finally won an Oscar for Best Director for his Best Picture-winning film, The Departed. The 2006 crime drama, which reserves as an American remake of 2002's Internal Affairs, features an all-star cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, and Jack Nicholson, and it has gone on to become one of the electrifying additions to the crime drama genre in the early 21st century. Nevertheless, audiences in China were unable to see the movie in theaters, as Scorsese wasn't willing to edit the film down.

While the mob movie features no shortage of graphic scenes, as well as a litter of four-letter words thrown around in constant fashion, the Chinese film board didn't take issue with the brutal violence in The Departed as much as they found issue with what appears to be a seemingly insignificant concern: the movie's reference to Chinese authorities that secretly purchase military hardware. While that seems like a pretty easy fix, Scorsese was not interested in making any significant cuts to his hit movie. Therefore, the Oscar-winning mob drama wasn't presented in front of Chinese theaters.

Guillermo Del Toro (Crimson Peak)

Guillermo Del Toro's lurid Crimson Peak is another eerie, chilling accomplishment from the Oscar-winning horror director. Once again, the filmmaker's gothic influences are presented in telling a Victorian England fable about an author who travels to a Gothic mansion located in a remote English area with her new family, only to be haunted by ghostly visions and general creepiness. The 2015 movie is surreal and often fantastical, like many movies from Guillermo Del Toro, and there are quite a few supernatural elements found in the spooky film — particularly with a character plagued by ghosts.

Movies featuring ghosts have traditionally been banned in China; we'll discuss in more detail with another entry in this feature. But while that might have been a major factor in its ban, there's also a good chance that Crimson Peak wasn't permitted in theaters because it featured (potential spoiler alert) a relationship between siblings. That didn't fly with the film administration, and it's hard to imagine these factors being taken out of the story and having a film that makes any sense at all. Therefore, Guillermo del Toro opted not to get any edit the film, resulting in the movie never being screened.

Paul Feig (Ghostbusters)

Though it was certainly the source of controversy among select protective fans of the series, Ghostbusters (2016) was well-received by critics and it earned a following amidst all the outrage from select corners of the fanbase. A reboot of Ivan Reitman's 1984 classic horror-comedy, Paul Feig's big-budget blockbuster centered around four women who band together to create a ghost-catching business in the heart of New York City. Nevertheless, while the movie received a generally mixed-to-positive response (with some very negative voices) in the United States, the movie wasn't even shown in China. As we mentioned earlier, China's film board is very strict about films featuring supernatural elements. And Ghostbusters certainly fit that bill.

While Sony attempted to market the movie for Chinese audiences by renaming the movie Super Power Dare Die Team, that was not exactly enough to make it fly. Traditionally, China's film board doesn't allow movies with ghosts or references to the supernatural unless the movie features characters who concede that these spirits and demons are just figments of their imagination. Alas, that was not exactly what went down with this film. It was gonna be tough for Ghostbusters (2016) to fit into China's strict taboo regulations for ghosts and references to ghosts. Unless they included a twist at the end revealing that the ghosts were all inside the women's heads, it was unlikely that Ghostbusters could possibly be retooled for Chinese viewers.

George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road)

Not only is 2015's incredible Mad Max: Fury Road considered the best addition to the series, upsetting Mad Max: The Road Warrior of its prized title, but George Miller's masterful action movie spectacle was considered a revolutionary addition to modern blockbuster cinema, earning no shortage of praise and receiving 10 Oscar nominations and winning six gold statues, including Best Production Design and Best Editing. Starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, Mad Max: Fury Road is an extraordinary accomplishment, one that demands the biggest screen possible to absorb all its splendor. But Chinese audiences were unfortunately unable to experience Fury Road the way it was meant to be seen. The film didn't receive a Chinese rollout.

The reasons for why Mad Max: Fury Road was not accepted into Chinese theaters is ultimately left a bit vague, though it appears that the film's heavy dystopian setting and themes prevented it from being accepted by the film board. Alas, that's not something you can take out overnight. This is a film series that has always been set in the apocalyptic future, and to remove that entirely would basically amount in a two-minute movie (if that...). Alas, it made no rational sense to retool the movie in any way. It seemed unlikely to ever get accept by Chinese film board, and Miller and Warner Bros. likely didn't even give it a second thought. While there's lots to admire in this beautiful, haunting cinematic experience, Fury Road did not make it to China. Nevertheless, in a weird turn of events, there is apparently an odd remake/rip-off of Mad Max: Fury Road that was made for Chinese movie theaters.

Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name)

An engaging, gentle, and quietly moving adaptation of Andre Aciman's 2007 novel of the same name, Call Me By Your Name is a sensual, moving film bolstered by the warm chemistry found between Oscar nominees Timothee Chalmet and Armie Hammer. An awards-friendly drama and a hit for director Luca Guadagnino, this erotic European love story is an engrossing tale of lust and loss, wistful nostalgia and burning passion. It also features several explicit and erotic scenes of homosexual sexuality and love-making, which prevented Call Me By Your Name from being screened in China.

Over the years, China's film board has been strict about movies that feature "homosexual content." Thus, that made the possibility of Call Me By Your Name being released in China unlikely. While there have been exceptions, including an edited version of Bohemian Rhapsody, generally speaking, movies that feature extended depictions or eroticism and sexuality between the same sex don't make it past the film board. Call Me By Your Name is no exception. While there are viewers around the world who were taken by this tender romantic drama, China prevented the movie from being shown.

Robert Zemeckis (Back To The Future)

For some folks, Back to the Future is the perfect movie. While there are many different timelines where this time-travel film turned into a humongous disaster, we're blessed to live in a time where director Robert Zemeckis' movie is hailed as an all-time classic. Alas, that's a reception that might not be shared in China due to the movie's inability to be released. As it turns out, in this timeline, the Chinese film board doesn't care for time-travel films.

Moreover, the Chinese film board wasn't a fan of how the movie provided a "disrespectful portrayal of history," in reference to the cheeky, lighthearted ways in which our main characters tinker with little details of history. While Robert Zemeckis could've tried to rework his movie in order for it to play in Chinese theaters, the movie hinges on time travel and playing with history. There's really no way to work around that, and it's another example where the movie's central concept can't be reworked under these specific circumstances. Alas, in 2011, the China censorship board decided to ban any and all entertainment that features time travel. Thus, this famous franchise (or any time travel movie) won't be playing in China anytime in the near future.

Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips)

Paul Greengrass' harrowing 2013 drama, Captain Phillips, is an exceptional thrilling, powerfully acted accomplishment, telling the true story of a 2009 hijacking of a U.S. container ship by Somali pirates. It is intimate, intense, and often relentless, featuring suspenseful realistic depictions of recent true story with unflinching nerve and powerful resolve. Unfortunately, audiences in China were unable to see the well-made dramatic film as it was banned.

While the reason for why China refused Captain Phillips was initially left unclear, the Sony email leaking provided some answers. Reportedly, Captain Phillips was not shown in Chinese theaters because it depicted the U.S. military making a valiant effort to save a single person, which the Chinese film board suggested would not happen under Chinese military, if a similar situation were to happen. Direct politics, which includes foreign policy, in films is something that the Chinese film board apparently tries to prevent in the films shown under their approval. While it's not impossible, a political film is expected to have a harder time gaining access to Chinese theaters. Ultimately, it seems that Sony opted not to retool Captain Phillips to gain access.

Call Me By Your Name was the sort of movie that had a profound impact on a lot of people as it focused on a love story that isn't often told in Hollywood films. However, it's causing people to make odd requests of Armie Hammer. The actor recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote his debut appearance on Broadway, but Hammer says that many of the fans waiting for him after the show are clearly fans of the film, as they hand him a particular piece of fruit. According to the actor...

It would be one thing if the Armie Hammer fans wanted to simply give him a peach as a knowing reference, but it seems that what they actually want is an autograph on the peach. Of course, Hammer points out to Stephen Colbert that while having his autograph on a peach might seem cool for a couple days, but if the peach just sits on a shelf, it's going to eventually begin to rot, which will make the autograph much less appealing.

For anybody that isn't up to speed, a peach plays a role in a particularly memorable scene in Call Me By Your Name, where Armie Hammer's co-star Timothée Chalamet uses the fruit as a masturbation aid. Thus the fruit has become an iconic symbol of the movie. Also, Armie Hammer personally verified that the scene is valid because using a peach in the fashion apparently totally works. Now you know.

As memorable as the scene was, that came from how intimate and personal the moment was for Timothée Chalamet's character in the film. It seems odd that people would want Armie Hammer's autograph on an item like that. Maybe the fact that the peach will be dead in a few days is part of why people are doing this, it will be gone soon and so it's no big deal. Anybody who tries to preserve the autograph is just going to think of a guy masturbating every time they look at it. Is that really what people want?

It does show, however, that there are a lot of people who certainly think very highly of Call Me By Your Name. The film was nominated for four Acadamy Awards earlier this year and it won one of them, Best Adapted Screenplay for James Ivory's script. No word if Timothée Chalamet receives similar items from fans.

One of the most buzzed-about movies heading into this year's Academy Awards was Call Me By Your Name. Luca Guadagnino's film netted four nominations, with one win for James Ivory's script. After a long career as a filmmaker, Ivory won his first Academy Award for the film for Best Adapted Screenplay. With the win he also became the oldest Oscar winner ever at 89. So you would think that Ivory couldn't be happier with how Call Me By Your Name turned out and all its success, but that is not so. He does have one problem with the film: there's no full-frontal male nudity in it. Ivory spoke candidly about his thoughts on the lack of nudity, saying:

James Ivory must be quite unhappy about this point if he is willing to call out the man who directed his Oscar-winning script in such a way. Beyond just the fact that Call Me By Your Name did not include the nudity, Ivory seems to believe that Luca Guadagnino's explanation for why the film didn't include it is unsatisfactory. The way Ivory frames it in speaking with The Guardian, he also makes it seem as though the nudity was something that the writer and director agreed to include in the film in advance, so Ivory may see the lack of it as something of a betrayal.

You can see where James Ivory is coming from because this is his story and he wanted it told in a certain way. He is a gay man and he wrote a gay love story, so it makes sense that he would want that to be fully realized on screen. However the nature of filmmaking is compromise, and unless you are directing your own script with complete creative control, there are certain things that may be lost in translation. Ivory also spoke about how he finds sex scenes where there is no nudity and the lovers have sheets strategically placed to cover them up to be disingenuous and unnatural.

Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet have clauses in their contracts that ruled out the possibility of nudity despite James Ivory specifying in the screenplay that the characters appear naked. Director Luca Guadagnino is also gay and he chose not to include explicit sex scenes and nudity in the film, instead opting to make the film as accessible and resistant to discrimination as possible. That actually raises an interesting point about what the result would have been if this film had included the nudity.

An actor of Armie Hammer's fame probably wouldn't have been involved if nudity was a requirement, and it is entirely likely that the film would not have enjoyed the success it did. Full-frontal male nudity or more explicit sex scenes may have impacted the rating of the film and could have also made some Academy members less likely to see it or vote for it. It's impossible to say, but nudity may have been the difference between James Ivory and Call Me By Your Name's Oscar win and relative obscurity. Whether that was worth it to him, only he can say.

The year 2017 was an amazing one for the film industry, and the Academy Awards celebration absolutely reflected that. While Guillermo del Toro's The Shape Of Water walked away the big winner - taking home prizes for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Score, and Best Production Design - there was a whole lot of love spread around. Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri was huge in the acting categories, with both Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell taking home trophies, and both Darkest Hour and I, Tonya received recognition thanks to the prizes given to Gary Oldman and Allison Janney. On opposite sides of the spectrum, Jordan Peele won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his directorial debut, Get Out, while Roger Deakins broke a 13-nomination-long losing streak with a Blade Runner 2049 win in the Best Cinematography category. It was a fantastic night, and we have a lot to say about it.

The 2018 Academy Awards are coming up this weekend and everybody is wondering who will win Best Picture. However, no rundown of the nominees will be funnier than this one. The team at Honest Trailers goes through all the nominees and breaks them down for you as only they can. If the Oscars were actually this funny, they'd get much better ratings. Check it out.

After briefly reminiscing about the epic insanity that was the end of last year's Oscar ceremony, the Honest Trailer jumps into the nominees with Darkest Hour. That movie, like a couple of the others, isn't really about the movie as it is about a single performance, the one by Gary Oldman as Winston Churchhill. It points out that the film actually covers a lot of the same time period as another Oscar nominee Dunkirk, but that this movie had a lot less action and a lot more of people chatting at each other.

From there we move to The Fish Banging Movie, or, as it is sometimes referred, The Shape of Water. The Honest Trailer does point out that there are a pair of films which could be viewed as more than a little creepy out of context. Both The Shape of Water and Call Me by Your Name center on relationships which, might not seem quite as romantic if they weren't in movies. In the case of Shape, the fantasy element helps diffuse any unwanted tension. In the case of Call, the trailer avoids getting too serious by making a joke about Armie Hammer's balls. It turns out even serious Oscar dramas need quality digital effects these days.

I wasn't as big a fan of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri as a lot of people were, but I can absolutely get behind the idea that Sam Rockwell needs to be a bigger name. He's a fantastic actor and if this movie does result in him no longer being "that guy" then I suppose it will be worth it.

Phantom Thread seems to get the briefest treatment over the course of the trailer, but the joke comparing Daniel Day-Lewis' character in the movie to the actor himself is a layup that needs to be made. So they did, and then they moved on.

On a personal level, the highlight of the video is the Lady Bird section, because, as somebody who lived outside Sacramento in the late 90s, the movie's incessant use of "Crash Into Me" by the Dave Matthews Band is actually incredibly true to life. It didn't matter how much you wanted to escape that song, it could not be done.

Dunkirk gets a little beat up for being the most Christopher Nolan movie ever. The Post takes its, well deserved, shots for feeling like the most calculated Oscar movie that it's going to be shocking when the movie probably doesn't win very much. Get Out, takes the final slot, and while the video heaps a lot of praise on the film, it also points out that the remarkable story of the horror movie, which is largely the reason it was nominated, is also the reason it probably won't win.

We'll find out which movie will actually be Best Picture during the, almost certainly less funny, Oscar telecast this Sunday.

With this week's nominations for the 90th Academy Awards locked and loaded, it's time for the Academy's voters to review the nine films they've deemed the best pictures of 2017. But this is also the time when the movie-going public tries to catch up with the nominees they're particularly interested in, or in some cases the whole entire smash.

Since the line-up is so diverse, with release dates ranging from the beginning of last year to just recently, you're going to want to know what your options are to be in the know before the big show, which is where this guide really comes in handy. So break out your calendars, send this article to your movie friends text chain, and let's look at how you can see the best and brightest of 2017 today.

Theatrical Marathon Events

For a little over a decade, there has been a slowly building trend of theatrical chains bringing back the best picture nominees in time for Oscar season, and one of the oldest and best established is the AMC Best Picture Showcase. Shown over the two Saturdays before the Oscars, the line-up will set you back $30 for 2/24's session, and $40 for 3/3. Though if you're daring enough to try, some locations will be doing a 24 hour marathon on 3/3 for $65. If you're an AMC Stubs member, you'll receive a $5 credit on your account for each day of the showcase, so that's an additional $10 value added to your ticket. Though if you're looking to only pick up some individual screenings of certain best picture nominees, AMC will be showing all nine Best Picture nominees at select locations, starting January 29th. Be sure to check AMC's official listings for further details, as well as more accurate pricing.

Also returning to the table is Regal's Best Picture Film Festival, which is more affordable, albeit with an interesting scheduling method of its own. This marathon clocks in at $35, but is only available through the Regal Theaters app. Unlike AMC's Best Picture Showcase, Regal's program gives you access to all BP noms between 2/23 & 3/4, with a tiered scheduling system that spreads out the line-up across that span of time. All films are shown at various times each day, so you'll need to check Regal's schedule, found here, for specifics.

New to the race is Cinemark's Oscar Week, which will also set you back $35, and gives you access to not only all of the best picture nominees, but also all of this year's Oscar Nominated Best Short Films. It's programmed similar to Regal's offering, with certain films at certain times each day. That schedule, as well as further details on Oscar Week, can be found here. But say you're not really looking to head out to a theater, or just want to watch one or two of these movies in the comfort of your own home? Well, if that's the case, let's see what each film's home video options entail at this moment.

The Shape of Water

Synopsis: Eliza (Sally Hawkins) is a mute cleaning lady for a government facility, with a pretty average day to day life. All of that changes once she falls for a specimen brought to her lab (Doug Jones). With the help of her friends (Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer), she'll try to grant this creature his freedom. Although it seems that there are forces with unknown (Michael Stuhlbarg) or opposing agendas (Michael Shannon) in mind.

Is It Still In Theaters: Yes. The Shape of Water's wide release started at the end of December, so there should be a good amount of theaters still running the film.

Darkest Hour

Synopsis: After his sudden, unexpected rise to the position of Prime Minister, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) finds himself inheriting the post at one of the bleakest periods in British history. With the Nazi war machine gaining steam, and the evacuation of Dunkirk staring him in the face, Churchill will have to prove to his detractors that he can do the job, while finding a way to provide the morale boost that the nation could use.

Phantom Thread

Synopsis: Thanks to a chance encounter, designer Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day Lewis) has found a new muse / lover in a young waitress (Vicky Krieps). Through the course of Phantom Thread, we see the push and pull of their relationship, and all of the darkly comic side effects that happen at each turn.

Is It Still In Theaters: Yes. Phantom Thread's wide release started on 1/19, so it should be pretty easy to seek this one out. Though if you're looking for the 70mm option, you're going to run into a much more limited range of options.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Synopsis: After the investigation into the rape and murder of her daughter has yielded no tangible results, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) decides to call out the local police chief (Woody Harrelson) through a series of three incendiary billboards. Through a series of escalating events, Mildred will find herself clashing with strangers, the chief himself, and even his loyal deputy (Sam Rockwell).

Is It Still In Theaters: Yes, but Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri may be harder to find as it's been running since November.

Get Out

Synopsis: On a weekend getaway to meet his girlfriend's family, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) begins to suspect something is amiss. With an atmosphere of creeping dread, and racial tension, Get Out puts its protagonist through the ringer, with each step he takes towards the horrifying truth.

The Post

Synopsis: In the midst of the controversial Vietnam War, a study is leaked to the press that provides a damning account of how the conflict was managed throughout its inception. With the New York Times gaining the first scoop, but being barred from printing any further items, it's up to Kathryn Graham (Meryl Streep) and Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) to fight the battle to publish at the Washington Post. The only things standing in their way are nervous board members, the possible jeopardy of a recent acquisition, and President Nixon himself.

Through the tumultuous days of her senior year in a Sacramento Catholic school, she'll contemplate college, hang out with her best friend (Beanie Feldstein) and try to survive living with her mother (Laurie Metcalf) in those final days before she goes off to the school of her choosing. Or rather, the schools that dare to choose her.

AwardsBlend co-hosts Sean O'Connell, Kevin McCarthy and Jake Hamilton hop behind their microphones this week to talk about the various Oscar nominations, where Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi creature romance The Shape of Water led all contenders with 13 noms, but Jordan Peele's Get Out followed right behind. Peele and his colleague, Greta Gerwig, also made headway as first-time filmmakers who broke into the coveted Best Director race. And we made connections to the Screen Actors Guild Awards winners, who all got Oscar nominations -- so we wonder if that makes them frontrunners in their respective categories.

But things really heat up when the guys get into a discussion about beloved cinematographer Roger Deakins, who is nominated for his work on Blade Runner 2049. But he shot it digitally, and the AwardsBlend hosts wonder if the decision to not shoot on film will hurt him in his bid to FINALLY win an Oscar after 13 previous nominations and not one win.

The Academy Awards announced their complete list of nominees or the 90th Oscars ceremony, which will be held on Sunday, March 4. In doing so, the Academy singled out nine films that will compete for Best Picture, ranging from Christopher Nolan's World War II epic Dunkirk to the harrowing social commentary of Jordan Peel's Get Out.

You wonderful people have been nice enough to follow CinemaBlend's coverage of all things film through the years, and 2017 was no different. We dove deep into all nine movie that proudly call themselves Best Picture nominees, hoping on board the Get Out train early and riding the wave of Phantom Thread right as 2017 drew to a close. Call Me By Your Name

Our review: Call Me By Your Name is the type of film you want to climb into, set up camp, and live inside for an extended period of time. By this rationale, it'd be the opposite of Jordan Peele's Get Out, a movie whose landscape you'd choose to avoid at all costs. Quite the contrary for director Luca Guadagnino's leisurely, lush and heartachingly romantic excursion, which beckons you into its frames with every visual cue, then lulls you into wanting to linger by weaving an embracing message of inclusion, of first-love experimentation, and of finding a way to be comfortable in our own skin, no matter how challenging that journey may seem.

Darkest Hour

Our review: Unlike Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, which showcased a very different side of the same time period and events earlier this year, Darkest Hour isn't a war film built on explosions and spectacle, but it is stunningly gorgeous all the same. With due credit going to both the cinematography and production design, there is no shortage of elegance and magnificence in Winston Churchill's aristocratic home or King George VI's palace -- but the movie also offers up some perfect contrast with the stark, dark, greyness of the war rooms where the gravest and most important decisions are made about the future of the country. The persistent beautiful image of curling cigar smoke caught in sunbeams is the perfectly lit cherry on top.

Dunkirk

Our review: While no surprise given his track record, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk is impressively ambitious. It is not only an extraordinary spectacle thanks to the extensive use of IMAX cameras (seriously demanding that it be seen on the largest screen possible), but it navigates a smart-yet-challenging non-linear path that plays out in three different threads -- all individually taking place over a different amount of time (specifically a week, a day, and an hour). Clocking in at only 107 minutes long, it's tightly paced, and end-to-end it is furnished with stunning sequences that leave you holding your breath.

Get Out

Our review: The great genre filmmakers recognize that horror's just a device for commentary, and while Get Out may look like everything is just painted on the surface, it's an impressively rich and powerful execution of a smart, scare-packed premise. It certainly takes cues from cinematic history, and could be elevator pitched as "The Stepford Wives meets Guess Who's Coming To Dinner," but with a playful sense of tone, amazing performances, and a sharp bite, it resonates with you long after you've left the theater.

Lady Bird

Our review: Ever since her debut in Atonement, Saoirse Ronan has been on a role when it comes to the leads she's scored in films like Lady Bird. In fact, all throughout writer/director Greta Gerwig's film, I was reminded that Ronan is an ace when it comes to portraying this particularly sensitive time in a young woman's life. She continues to captivate the screen with her acting skills, making both "Lady Bird's" sympathetic and more childish moments come to life without turning them into caricatures. While we can take issue with some of her actions and statements to those she knows and loves, we can never write off her character as a typical screen brat. It's a delicate line to walk with such a story, and Saoirse Ronan makes it look damned easy.

Phantom Thread

Our review: While Paul Thomas Anderson has presented an eclectic mix of tones and stories during his endlessly impressive career, Phantom Thread presents a stunning contrast of elegance and darkness, leading the filmmaker to aesthetically build something unlike anything we've ever seen from him. And the results are expectedly incredible. He keeps the argument of film over digital very much alive, and acting as his own cinematographer for the first time delivers scene after scene of visual splendor -- bathing the detailed work of uniformed seamstresses in angelic, soft white light and offering sinister, fire lit visions of the future through its non-linear narrative. You expect beauty in a film about fashion, and Anderson practically overwhelms you with it.

The Post

Our review: The Post, Steven Spielberg's exceptional new film about the vitality of journalism, might be his first movie to weave both genres together, pouring a valuable history lesson into a briskly paced race-the-clock political thriller that pushes all the right buttons we need in a crowd-pleaser. Shot and edited in a seven-month span, The Post boasts a stunning ensemble of extraordinary character actors sinking their teeth into a riveting screenplay, all choreographed by a genius filmmaker who is firing on all possible cylinders. The Post is the best movie I saw this year, and likely the most important movie you'll see in several years.

The Shape of Water

Our review: If you really wanted to, you could tuck yourself in for The Shape of Water and let the film tell you one of the best adult bedtime stories you've ever heard. With a poetry and rhythm that flows as strong as the currents of the world, Guillermo del Toro and co-writer Vanessa Taylor has brought us another film that pays homage to classic Hollywood, while existing firmly in a modern frame of mind. It's a story of romance crossing boundaries, of the outsiders teaming up to defeat the status quo, and of the true beauty of life available to all, so long as they choose to see it. This is the most beautiful film of the year, both in body and spirit, and it is not to be missed.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Our review: As much as folks are going to be talking about Frances McDormand come Oscar season, they'll more than likely speaking towards Sam Rockwell's portrayal of Officer Dixon. As his battle of wits with Mildred Hayes escalates to further levels of anger and one-upmanship, the events only serve to show just how alike both participants are when pursuing what they believe to be justice. In a lesser movie, we'd totally be on Mildred's side, but in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, we're forced to consider both sides of the matter, as the film shows us both sides in humane detail.

Set in 1983, Call Me By Your Name transports us to the bewitching country climes of Northern Italy, where graduate student Oliver (Armie Hammer) has come to study archaeology with his professor, Mr. Perlman (Michael Stuhlbarg). The pace of life at the Perlman abode is languid -- borderline slothful -- leaving Oliver plenty of time to soak up the Italian climate, the culture, the atmosphere... and the attention of Perlman's teenage son, Elio (Timothee Chalamet).

The relationship stages captured on screen between Elio and Oliver in Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name are timeless, universal, and yet largely unexplored in mainstream cinema because they happen to occur between two men. Elio's stuck in an instantly recognizable limbo. He's very much a boy, yet he's panged by the awarenesses of a man, and this movie conveys that longing in ways we rarely see. This is a very sensual story about how love and erotic passion can consume a person, particularly a budding teenager whose hormones encourage him (or her) to basically lust after anything in sight. Even a peach. Especially a peach.

It helps that Guadagnino gets to point his camera at objects that stimulate salivatory motions in a captive audience, from Italy's quaint and gorgeous landscapes to the statuesque presence of a ridiculously attractive Armie Hammer. My running joke on Call Me is that working title might as well be Everyone Wants To Fuck Armie Hammer, because he's the quintessential object of desire at the heart of this film, and it works to the story's advantage. Both leads are spectacular, playing off of each other and wrapping the sensual glow of the landscape around them. But Hammer, in particular, plays Oliver with a cavalier sense of awareness about his attractiveness, and the power it has over anyone in his stratosphere. Watch him throw back his head and dance to "Love My Way" by the Psychedelic Furs. He knows it's a moment that will transcend the movie and live on as a symbol of sexual freedom, of carefree wont. And he's right. It does.

It'd be understandable if Call Me By Your Name threw it into neutral gear and coasted to easy conclusions about first loves or unhealthy obsessions. But the drama establishes itself as a humane conversation starter with a firm grip on its characters for the chances it takes in its final act with two devastating emotional beats saved fir the closing moments of this beautiful story. I won't tell you what they are, but I'll tell you that they involve Michael Stuhlbarg and his words of wisdom, and Timothee Chalamet and his haunting stare.

With these moments lending Call Me By Your Name a powerful net in which to land, you will see why Luca Guadagnino's tender romance is being embraced by an inclusive audience for the raw emotions it commits to the screen, and the unflinching way it celebrates homosexual passion between two handsome ships that crossed paths in the night.

The Golden Globes may have kicked off award season in 2018, but now it's time to move up to the major leagues. We are just a few weeks away from this year's Academy Awards ceremony, and there remains no major front-runner in the race. We fully expect that to continue for the foreseeable future, but at the very least we now know which movies are in contention.

Music has been an integral part of the film medium from the very beginning, with scores accompanying silent features long before the introduction of "talkies" -- and it's been realized time and time again that bonding the perfect song to the right moment can create an incredible magic. Every year we see great examples of this in the greatest movies of the year, and as you might have guessed, 2017 is no exception.

With the year winding down we are looking back on the best that the world of cinema had to offer in the last 12 months, and today we're specifically looking at the realm of movie music moments. There were many remarkable marriages of the mediums featured in 2017, and below and across the next few pages we've highlighted our 10 favorites:

"Bellbottoms" in Baby Driver

Since I started writing this list back in 2009, I've maintained a rule that a film can only have one entry in each annual feature. This has been hard to maintain over the years due to certain music-centric titles, but none have challenged me quite like Edgar Wright's Baby Driver. The whole edit is genius within the way it's synchronized to the soundtrack, and it essentially leaves the feature as one endless movie music moment. Needing to pick a single song, however, I went with the stunning opening provided by the beat of The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's "Bellbottoms." The audience is completely fresh into the story when Ansel Elgort's Baby hits play on his iPod, unleashing this intense jam, and before it's over you know exactly what this brilliant piece of cinema is all about.

"Remember Me" in Coco

Pixar has a long, long legacy of successfully pulling (if not straight up yanking) emotional heartstrings, and it's a tradition maintained by Lee Unkrich's Coco. What makes the new film particularly special within that, however, is the utilization of music. At the end of the movie Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) is desperate to save the soul of Héctor (Gael Garcia Bernal), and the only way to do that is by reminding his great-great-grandmother, Coco, of the song that her father used to sing to her as a child: "Remember Me" (based on music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez). It's beyond touching and uplifting in the Pixar spirit, and the studio's best use of emotion and music since the use of Michael Giacchino's score in the opening of Pete Docter's Up.

"You'll Never Know, Just How Much, I Love You" in The Shape Of Water

The classical sensibilities of Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water are a big part of what make it such a remarkable cinematic experience -- and in few places does that shine greater than the stunning underwater dance set to Alice Faye's "You'll Never Know, Just How Much, I Love You." It's a moment of fantasy within a fantasy story, as we watch the full flood of emotions that Elisa (Sally Hawkins) feels for the Amphibian Man (Doug Jones) erupt, not only in the form of the water filling the small peaceful apartment, but also the beautiful voice that she can't actually produce. It also happens to be a wonderful expression of del Toro's appreciation for golden age cinema, the song originating from 1944's big screen musical Four Jills in a Jeep.

"Father and Son" in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

There are few modern blockbusters where the soundtrack was as hotly anticipated as the film itself, but James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is certainly a perfect example. The writer/director collected a fantastic collection of songs to fuel the action of his first Marvel Studios entry back in 2014, and he didn't disappoint with what he put together for Awesome Mix Vol. 2. And while there are multiple film moments that could have made their way on to this list if featured in a different feature, the true highlight is the use of Cat Steven's "Father and Son." There are few comic book movie moments as genuinely emotional as the Ravager funeral for Michael Rooker's Yondu Udonta, and the somber sounds of Stevens' acoustic guitar is more than enough to make you erupt in tears.

"Redbone" in Get Out

A huge part of what makes Jordan Peele's Get Out so phenomenal as a directorial debut is Peele's adept attention to detail in every single moment of the film. It not only adds to every experience watching it, as you pick up on certain elements that you didn't catch the first time, but more importantly demonstrates the writer/director's skills as a storyteller. Music-wise he has the fantastic work of first-time movie composer Michael Abels regularly heightening tension and drama with his score, but with the introduction of Daniel Kaluuya's Chris is smartly played with Childish Gambino's "Redbone" -- what Peele describes as a "chill groove" on the director's commentary. The first lyrics played, "Stay woke," is an immediate signal to the audience that the protagonist is coming into the story with his eyes open... albeit not fully prepared for what's ahead of him.

"Crash Into Me" in Lady Bird

Dave Matthews Band's "Crash Into Me" is one of those quintessential 1990s song that has aged oddly -- now a track that inspires snorts of contempt whenever it comes on the radio. Its lyrics are seriously mixed up, struggling with a strange balance between romantic and terrifyingly creepy, but still the crooning voice and acoustic riffs have a hypnotizing quality. It certainly adds a nostalgia bent to Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird, featured multiple times as a song unapologetically enjoyed by Saoirse Ronan's titular character, but is equally thematically relevant. The coming of age story has Lady Bird just as twisted up as the message of the music, and it's used perfectly in moments of peer defiance and great sadness for the protagonist.

"Love My Way" in Call Me By Your Name

Like Lady Bird, Luca Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name is a beautiful coming of age story, crafting a story of young love and heartbreak through the eyes of young Elio (Timothee Chalamet). During a summer of 1983 in Italy, the teenager becomes infatuated with the free-spirited, handsome Oliver (Armie Hammer), who is staying with his family to assist in his father's work. After some brief clashing at the start, the Elio and Oliver start to become close, and it's while watching the latter dance to classic, ultra-'80s new wave ballad "Love My Way" by The Psychedelic Furs in a nightclub that we start to see the former's feelings start to blossom beyond friendship.

"Who's The (Bat)Man" in The LEGO Batman Movie

Batman has been one of the most significant pop culture characters on the big screen in the modern era, but that's a big part of what makes Chris McKay's The LEGO Batman Movie so much fun. It celebrates the incredible legacy of the superhero, even successfully making in-jokes at his expense that the majority of audiences understand. All of this is true about the entire film, but that amazing energy is awesomely distilled in the opening sequence featuring Patrick Stump's "Who's The (Bat)Man." It's not quite the earworm that "Everything Is Awesome" was from the first LEGO Movie, but it perfectly fits a fantastic blast of action featuring basically every villain that the Caped Crusader as battled over the last 78 years.

"Hangin' Tough" in IT

Music can be a powerful cinematic tool when put in skilled hands. With only a couple notes or lyrics, a filmmaker can tell an entire story within a moment. Now, admittedly the presence of New Kids On The Block makes for a running joke in Andres Muschietti's IT, but I want to specifically celebrate the brief clip of "Hangin' Tough." All of two seconds of the song is played when Beverly Marsh (Sophia Lillis) discovers the NKOTB poster hanging in the bedroom of "New Kid" Ben (Jeremy Ray Taylor), but it perfectly cements a perfect moment between the two characters destined for love. Thanks to the success of IT, their relationship will probably be forever associated with the band, but that just leaves us excited for more boy band moments in the upcoming IT: Chapter 2.

"Take Me Home, Country Roads" in Logan Lucky

No less than six major releases in 2017 utilized the music of John Denver, and while it turns out that is no mere coincidence, one example stands above the rest. It's been 11 years since Little Miss Sunshine used child pageantry to craft a fantastic movie music moment out of Rick James' "Super Freak," and now Steven Soderbergh has used a similar setting to make heartfelt use of John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" in Logan Lucky. The fact that the generally unreliable, unlucky Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) makes it to his daughter's performance at the pageant is a key moment for the character in the film, and the tune is sung with love from the stage by young Farrah Mackenzie. You also have to just give it bonus points for using the song and actually being a film set in "almost heaven, West Virginia."

The Golden Globes are unique among awards ceremonies in that they offer categories for both TV programs and stuff that made it all the way to the big screen. Honestly, what is striking about a lot of these nods is that many people watching at home haven't had a chance to see them yet. As 2017 continues to march towards its conclusion, more awards boards, film institutions and media outlets will be providing their take on just what their solid top 10 rankings of the year's films are. Everyone does it, and it's a celebrated tradition that falls right in with egg nog, writing your resolutions and trying to see Star Wars with as many friends as possible. Well, the American Film Institute has ranked in with their top 10 for the year that was, and you can see that list below:

Now one big thing to keep in mind is that the AFI doesn't rank their favorites of the year. Rather, they list them in alphabetical order, in lieu of trying to rank their favorites in a preferential order. With that in mind, this list is a welcome mix of the usual end of the year fare that sticks out in the minds of the film criticism community, as well as some standouts that made a name for themselves earlier in the year.

In the corner of the predictable, films like Steven Spielberg's The Post, Martin McDonaugh's Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri, and Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water were all mentioned as honored films. Not to mention, festival favorites like Call Me By Your Name and The Florida Project, as well as early fall delights like Lady Bird, all made their way to safety on the list. But perhaps the biggest surprises came from the films that built a cloud of steam earlier in the year, despite the possibility of later year prestige players pushing them out of the game.

The biggest example of such a contender is Jordan Peele's Get Out, a film that cleaned up with critics and audience members in February of this year, shortly before Logan was starting to win folks over into thinking it would last as one of the year's top films. While some are still talking about the latter film, the former has proved to have strong legs throughout 2017, and seems poised to be one of the possible outside candidates for top honors this year. Three other early risers, The Big Sick, Wonder Woman and Dunkirk bring up the metaphorical rear, rounding out a field of 10 films worthy of distinction.

Just how much the list of the AFI's Top 10 of 2017, as reported by THR, will manage to shape the 2018 Oscar race is yet to be seen. But what can already be observed is the fact that the compliment of films we've run through are a healthy mix of both your usual trophy chasers and mass appeal hits that pushed the public to the theater at various points of the year. These crowned cinematic children will be honored at the AFI's annual luncheon, scheduled to be held on January 5, 2018. After a few years of trying out bigger budget movies, Armie Hammer is back as the star of an indie flick that has been receiving quite a bit of notice over the past few months. Call Me By Your Name has mostly attracted attention because of its buzzy love story, its beautiful setting and its early critical response. However, now Call Me By Your Name is attracting notice thanks to an admission from Armie Hammer himself. Apparently the costume designer put him into such tight, short clothing that the director ultimately had to edit his balls from the movie. Here's what the actor had to say:

If you've checked out the Call Me By Your Name trailer or even seen the movie in limited release, you may have caught a look at Armie Hammer wearing short shorts. Several of the vacation-type shorts are incredibly short in the movie, so short that Hammer told Andy Cohen in a Sirius XM interview that director Luca Guadagnino had to take great pains to make sure his balls didn't show up in the final product. In fact, Guadagnino also joked in the same interview that it was a two-fold problem. Not only were they "short shorts," Armie Hammer also filled them with his reportedly "big balls." So there you have it, perhaps the digital edits would not have had to be made if the actor didn't fill his shorts so, erm, well.

I don't know how we are still talking about Armie Hammer excising himself from Twitter this week, when there are stories out there like this to digest. Who wouldn't rather be thinking about Armie Hammer's balls, or at least be thinking about jokes that could be made about Armie Hammer's balls? Really, there are minutes of entertainment to be had here.

This story is made even funnier by the fact that Call Me By Your Name is, by all accounts, a poignant and beautiful movie. It's about a teenaged boy who lives in the Italian countryside while his professor father works over the summer. It is there that he meets a grad student working for dear dad and they form a bond that eventually turns into a summer romance. By all accounts, it's not the type of story that would linger on a humorous ball-oriented note.

Apparently, though, that's exactly what happened during filming, although Armie Hammer and Luca Guadagnino promise that the final cut does not reveal the actor's private parts popping out of his shorts. The movie is rated R for sexual content, nudity and some language, though, so don't expect it too be too tame. (In fact, there's a masturbation scene with a peach.) The nominees for the 2018 Independent Spirit Awards have been announced and Call Me by Your Name leads the pack with six nominations. The 2018 ceremony will mark the 33rd year of the awards, put forth by Film Independent, which honor the best in independent filmmaking. Call Me by Your Name scored nominations in most of the major categories with nominations for Best Feature, Best Editing and Best Cinematography. Director Luca Guadagnino was nominated for best director and stars Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer received nominations for best male lead and best supporting male, respectively. Call Me by Your Name tells the story of 17-year-old Elio, who, in 1983, begins a relationship with his father's research assistant, Oliver. The two bond over the Italian countryside, their shared heritage and Elio's emerging sexuality. The film is based on a novel by author André Aciman.

The Hollywood Reporter also reports that Call Me by Your Name was followed by Good Time and the wildly successful Get Out with five nominations each. This is just another notch in the belt of Jordan Peele's directorial debut as it racks up nominations in advance of next year's Academy Awards. Greta Gerwig's directorial debut, Lady Bird, which is currently enjoying major success at the box office and universal critical acclaim, received a healthy four nominations including best feature. The 2018 Spirit Awards air live on IFC on March 3, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. PT. The awards will be hosted again this year by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney. Audiences who want a break from all the blockbuster fare can skip the post turkey shopping and catch Call Me by Your Name in limited release starting this Black Friday, November 24. Apparently, we've moved from the big screen era of lots of boob flashes to watching weird masturbation sequences. Earlier this year, Robert Pattinson's movie Good Time reportedly shot a scene featuring his character masturbating a dog, which was faked. But if you are into all types of sex scenes, you'll get a doozy in Armie Hammer's new movie. One character in the film is going to jerk himself off to a peach. Yes, that plump, fleshy fruit.

The new movie Call Me by Your Name is based on the 2007 novel of the same name, a book that is full of intense sexual encounters, nudity, and yes a scene where a boy takes a peach and finds that he can, in fact, use it as a sexual tool. It's a concept that works in fiction, but when Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino was trying to figure out how the onscreen version would look, he struggled with the idea of the famous peach scene, noting,

What is perhaps funniest about this story is the fact that not only did Luca Guadagnino try his hand to test whether the peach theory would work, but the actor he hired to take on the role also gave masturbating with a peach a shot. So, if you were reading this article and wondering whether the scene in question even makes sense, you don't have to go so far as to grab a peach and try it yourself to see if it works. Although I guess if your thing is masturbating with weird fruit, that's no stranger than wanting to get it on with supernatural entity Pennywise the Clown.

Luca Gudagnino also told OUT that it was a real struggle to figure out if the iconic scene should even make the move. He said:

Exist it will. Call Me By Your Name is the story of Elio, a young man who spends his summers abroad in an academic house, where his parents take in a guest who helps with his father's work. In the particular summer the movie focuses on Elio meets Oliver, and they have a pretty steamy and explicit relationship. In the film, Oliver will be played by Armie Hammer and Elio will be played by Timothée Chalamet.

We've barely had time to close the books on the 89th Annual Academy Awards, and congratulate La La Land on its well-deserved Best Picture... what's that, Warren Beatty? It's Moonlight? Ah, yes. Well, congrats to Moonlight for taking home Best Picture! Anyway, what better time to look ahead and see which movie might be confused by an aging Hollywood icon NEXT year at the prestigious Oscar ceremony. Because it's never too soon to start campaigning. Last year when we tried this, we failed miserably, nailing only one of nine Best Picture guesses. We can't do worse, right? Right?!

Best Picture

Is this the year that a superhero movie cracks through the glass ceiling at the Oscars? Logan has a very good shot, with spectacular reviews so far and a leading man (Hugh Jackman) with Academy cred. Jackman might also power The Greatest Showman into the race, as the P.T. Barnum biopic also boasts music by the La La Land songwriters, Pasek and Paul. We'll know soon enough if Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast can match the Best Picture nomination earned by its animated counterpart in 1992. And the rest of my bizarrely early guesses are attached to directing talent like Kathryn Bigelow, Alexander Payne, Darren Aronofsky and Paul Thomas Anderson.

Best Director

These are all being selected -- like so many choices in this feature -- based on the previous accomplishments of the various men and women. Because they have been selected as Best Directors in the past, there's reason to believe we cold see them again. That being said, we're keeping our minds wide open for the next Damien Chazelle (La La Land) or Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), relative newcomers who succeed in impressing the Academy with films we never really saw coming.

Best Actor

Any time DDL does a movie, he belongs in the conversation. Out of this pack, Armie Hammer's movie Call Me By Your Name already has screened, and Sony Pictures Classics has an awards contender on its hands (by all accounts), so long as it handles its campaign properly. My longshot is Logan. Can the Academy actually honor an esteemed actor in a superhero role? Probably not, but for now, I can hope.

Five women from four movies we haven't seen yet. The real wild card here is Darren Aronofsky's first film in years, Mother! It has a brilliant cast, and the Black Swan director pushed Natalie Portman to her first Oscar win. What will he get out of Academy darlings Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Pfeiffer? We can't wait to find out in November.

Every year, Hollywood eases into its post-holiday, pre-Oscars session with a pit stop to Park City, Utah for the annual Sundance Film Festival. It's here where we begin to acquire tat valuable "buzz" on arthouse, indie and possible awards-worthy features that will be making their way down the mountain over the course of the year, and into our local movie theaters. The thing about Sundance, however, is that you never really know how strong a beloved film's legs are going to be. The altitude often plays with expectations, and movies like last year's The Birth of a Nation or the previous year's Me, Earl and the Dying Girl don't always connect with mainstream crowds once they finally are screened for the non-Sundance throngs.

This year's Sundance Film Festival kicked off on Thursday, January 19, meaning we have had nearly a week to process the hype on several of the films that have screened since opening night. Here, then, are the five movies we think you need to seek out when they finally play in a theater near you.

The Big Sick

To best understand The Big Sick, you need only know that it is directed by Michael Showalter (The State, Wet Hot American Summer) and produced by Judd Apatow, so it will blend humor and heart in a package that probably lasts too long and will need a decent trim before reaching mainstream theaters. Still, reviews for the personal comedy have been overwhelmingly positive, as screenwriter and star Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley, The X-Files) recounts a brush with a mysterious illness his wife, Emily V. Gordon (Zoe Kazan) faced during their courtship.

From SlashFilm's Review: "A sincere romantic comedy that will give you hearty laughs over and over again and then squeezes tears from your eyes moments later. ... I don't remember the last time a movie was able to have this much hilarity one moment and pure emotion from me, back and forth throughout the entire film."

Wind River

You might not know Taylor Sheridan's name just yet, but there's a very good chance you watched and enjoyed one of his film. The multi-nominated screenwriter has turned heads recently with scripts for Sicario and Hell or High Water. Wind River is his directorial debut, and from what we are hearing, it's very much in line with those two tense, rewarding films. Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen take a break from the MCU to play investigators teamed up on a difficult murder case that plunges them into the snowy elements on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming.

From Fandango's Review: "Wind River is a tense, captivating thriller that proves Taylor Sheridan is one of the most exciting emerging storytellers in years."

A Ghost Story

Color me "shocked" that Sundance critics are falling for a quiet, subdued Rooney Mara / Casey Affleck romance directed by David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints, Pete's Dragon), but the reviews are SO over the top positive, this one belongs on your list. The premise sounds twee, as Affleck's character dies in the opening scenes, then his ghost follows his widow (Mara) home so he can watch her grieve. There's even a 5-minute, uninterrupted scene of Mara eating pie as she cries. But again, critical response has been ridiculously positive, so take note.

From The Film Stage's Review: "A Ghost Story is one of the most poignant films to ever grapple with this existential question. It's a singular feat of enthralling storytelling that I would say is going to leave a lasting impression centuries after everyone involved has passed away."

Mudbound

Dee Rees turned heads with the devastating Pariah, and is back with an adaptation of Hillary Jordan's prize-winning book, which is being described as Faulknerian in its scope and character depth. It might have a whiff of Birth of a Nation, as it explores the simmering racial tensions of America during the Jim Cow years. But it has a stellar cast, ranging from Carey Mulligan to Mary J. Blige and Jason Clarke. This one covers a lot of ground, but it sounds like it gives audiences a full meal on which to chew.

From The Hollywood Reporter's Review: "Mudbound requires a taste for leisurely storytelling generally more focused on building careful nuances and layered characters than on big dramatic cymbal clashes. But patient investment pays off in an epic that creeps up on you, its stealth approach laced with intelligence, elegance and an affecting balance of humanity and moral indignation."

Call Me By Your Name

Continuing to hold open the door that was opened by Moonlight, Luca Guadagino's Italian drama is being heralded as a strong representation of gay cinema, with Armie Hammer and Timothee Chalamet playing two men who engage in a passionate relationship while staying in a picturesque villa. If the story sounds basic, the execution reportedly trumps the simplicity, with the entire cast earning raves. If you happened to catch Guadagino's A Bigger Splash, this should come as no surprise.
