Spoiler alert! Major spoilers ahead for the Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 finale, which aired May 7. The episode is available to stream with a Hulu subscription.

Grey’s Anatomy is known for leaving fans with some pretty brutal cliffhangers, especially on season finales. Think back to last year’s explosion, which led us to believe Link was dead, along with who knows how many others. Combine that with Camilla Luddington’s tease of “so many cliffhangers,” and I was ready for the Season 22 finale to be a bloodbath. I was wrong, and showrunner Meg Marinis had a good explanation for why she “needed” that ending.

So, despite the penultimate episode making us think Kevin McKidd’s Grey’s Anatomy exit might come by killing off Owen Hunt, nobody died in “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (not on-screen at least; the bridge collapse did result in several casualties, we were told). Owen saved himself and a family of four, while Nick Marsh pulled through a tough surgery and ended up ENGAGED to Meredith Grey! That’s a lot of joy for a Grey’s Anatomy finale, and apparently that was exactly the point, as Meg Marinis told THR:

She pointed out that we saw quite a bit of tragedy in Season 22 — Monica Beltran’s death, Lucas Adams losing Katie (still a big mistake in my book), Richard Webber’s cancer, Jo and Link both nearly dying, etc. So rather than teasing us with more death, Meg Marinis decided to cliffhang us on relationships and career decisions. She said:

We’ve known for a while that Meredith and Nick are endgame, so I wasn’t expecting to have such an emotional reaction to their decision to make it official.

We also got Owen making the right relationship decision (for once) by deciding to move to Paris with Teddy (Kim Raver) and the kids so she could accept the great job offer. Elsewhere in the hospital, however, the showrunner pointed out:

This was definitely not the finale I expected — I’m still waiting for Owen’s unchecked head laceration to come back to bite him — but I’m pleased that it proves cliffhangers don’t have to mean putting our heroes’ lives at risk to keep interest alive in the upcoming stories.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 23 promises a lot of relationship drama and possibly new beginnings and career changes for several of the surgeons. Until then, you can relive all 22 seasons on Hulu or revisit your favorite Grey’s Anatomy era from the first 21 seasons with a Netflix subscription.

Prime Video's Tomb Raider show was put on pause recently after its star, Sophie Turner, was injured. Thankfully, Turner is reportedly doing fine, but that situation does illustrate that filming this action series, and playing Lara Croft in general, is not for the faint of heart. Few know that better than actress Camilla Luddington, who portrayed Croft and had some advice for the Game of Thrones actress on how to recover after hard days on set.

Luddington voiced and did motion capture for Lara Croft throughout three Tomb Raider Survivor games, and she told People she had some recovery tips for her colleague, Sophie Turner. It seems like heat is the key for those achy muscles, given what Luddington said when she ran through her post-stunt performance cooldown:

Being an action star isn't easy. Daniel Craig suffered a number of injuries on the sets of James Bond films, and who can forget Tom Cruise breaking his ankle while performing a wild Mission: Impossible stunt? It goes without saying that Turner needs to take care of her body while filming the Tomb Raider series, and I'd say that Luddington has some truly sage advice.

Given that Sophie Turner's injury was reported to be minor, filming resumed shortly after the situation occurred. Turner trained a lot for the role and seemed pretty confident in her strength, even telling Jimmy Fallon she could beat him up. With all signs pointing to Turner truly committing to the role of Lara, I'm excited to eventually watch her in action with a Prime Video subscription.

Tomb Raider has the potential to be another smash hit for Prime, which struck gold with its live-action adaptation of the video game Fallout. Provided the series can thrive in the same areas that the aforementioned sci-fi show has, mainly in being faithful in how it adapts the games, I think there's no reason to believe it could be just as big a hit, if not bigger.

For those who never played the games, the original Tomb Raider games center around Lara Croft, a cool archaeologist traveling the world in search of ancient artifacts. The series essentially has the same vibe as Indiana Jones, with the obvious difference being that the focus is on a younger female character. I'm crossing my fingers that this upcoming video game adaptation gives the same vibes as the games -- and that Sophie Turner remains safe and well rested as she continues to film it.

A release date has yet to be announced for the Tomb Raider series yet, but those with Prime Video will be able to check it out when it releases. In the meantime, there are plenty of video game adaptations to watch on both the big and small screens, and fans should seek them out.

Grey’s Anatomy is coming up on the end of Season 22, and in true Grey’s fashion, I do not know what to expect. There are two episodes left on the 2026 TV schedule, but most details surrounding the finale, airing on May 7, have not been revealed (aside from a concerning promo for the penultimate episode). That isn’t stopping Camilla Luddington from spilling the beans on the upcoming cliffhangers, though, and it makes me so happy Season 23 is happening.

If there is one show that knows how to do season finales, it’s Grey’s Anatomy. Every year it’s unpredictable. There could be a happy ending, a sad ending or a cliffhanger ending, and that ending is more than likely something that will keep fans on the edge of their seats and waiting very impatiently for next season. It seems that's exactly what's going to happen this season, too, as Luddington, who plays Dr. Jo Wilson, told Us Weekly that fans may want to brace themselves:

Cliffhangers are unfortunately normal on Grey’s Anatomy, and a lot of times the resolution doesn’t have a happy ending. So the fact that there is more than one cliffhanger in the season finale makes me really worried about what this could mean for some characters. Most notably, I'm concerned about Owen and Teddy, since both Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are leaving at the end of the season.

At the very least, there is going to be a lot to look forward to in the finale, which is pretty big, according to Luddington:

As a Station 19 fan, I am very excited about the fact that Danielle Savre will finally be returning as Maya Bishop, marking the first time a Station 19 star has appeared on Grey’s since the show ended in 2024, excluding Jason George, of course. However, from the looks of the promo, it’s not going to be under happy circumstances, and that scares me. So while we’re getting Maya back, what will the cost be? Owen and Scott Speedman’s Nick also seem to be in trouble, and there’s no telling what will happen. So, all around, I'm concerned about these cliffhangers.

Whatever happens in the season finale, fans will see a resolution, likely later this year. The hospital-set TV show was recently renewed for Season 23, and while there weren’t any concerns about its future, it is nice getting that confirmation, especially knowing how Season 22 will end.

The Season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy airs on Thursday, May 7, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC, streaming the next day with a Hulu subscription, so fans still have about a month to wait before we find out how things will come to an end. It’s likely Season 23 will premiere this fall, but more information on that should be announced soon. Grey’s returns for the rest of Season 22 on April 30.

When Grey’s Anatomy said goodbye to Levi Schmitt over a year ago, fans hoped that wouldn’t be the last time we saw Jake Borelli. While the actor did return for Levi to attend his BFF Jo Wilson’s wedding, he may have flown under the radar with his latest appearance. Borelli made his directorial debut in the April 2 episode that aired on the 2026 TV schedule, and he opened up about the scene that was “shocking” to him and left him in tears.

Jake Borelli joins a handful of Grey’s Anatomy actors to take their talents behind the camera, including Chandra Wilson, Jesse Williams, Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, and he opened up about how different it was to direct Camilla Luddington as opposed to being there as Jo’s best friend. Borelli told TV Insider:

The scene was a heartbreaker, as Jo uses a close call with a current patient to ultimately admit to Link that she’s suffering from postpartum depression and feels guilty about associating their twins’ birth with her own near-death experience.

As close as Levi was to Jo, even he wouldn’t have been privy to this vulnerable conversation between Jo and her husband, and Jake Borelli said it was tough to get through. He continued:

Honestly, the scene brought me to tears as well, because Link had such a sweet, supportive response, and it reminded me of why I really love Jo and Link’s relationship.

For Jake Borelli, though, it was more than just the emotion of Jo being able to admit something so hard. Watching the character go through that triggered the Levi in him, as he said:

Jo and Levi’s friendship always felt so authentic, and to know that Jake Borelli feels that connection even when Levi’s not actually around just validates why fans have always loved them so much.

Grey’s Anatomy is on hiatus for a couple of weeks, but be sure to tune in for the final two episodes of Season 22, starting at 10 p.m. ET Thursday, April 30, on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu.

Over the past two decades, we’ve seen some pretty shocking deaths on Grey’s Anatomy, from McDreamy to the “horrifying” Lexie situation to the most recent loss on Season 22. In fact, the current season has put several of the Seattle surgeons knocking at death’s door, but how close were Meg Marinis and her writers to actually letting that door open? I’m aghast over the showrunner’s admission that there was even “a conversation” about killing off Richard Webber.

James Pickens Jr. is one of just two series regulars to be on all 22 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy so far (along with Chandra Wilson), so when his character Richard was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I have to admit I wasn’t too worried about his chances of survival. Meg Marinis laughed at the audacity it would take to kill off an OG, telling THR:

OK, despite the fact that the writers did apparently bring up the possibility of having Richard die, it doesn’t sound like Meg Marinis wants that to be part of her writers room’s legacy.

The episode in question — which introduced Richard’s late father in a dream sequence — was emotional enough without having to worry about the doc’s survival, and it sounds like that’s exactly what the showrunner was going for. It was the same thing, she said, with Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and her twins, whose fates were cliffhanged in the fall finale. Meg Marinis said:

Grey’s Anatomy has gone dark, for sure, but it felt a little too extreme to think that the show would either kill off Jo and leave Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack) a single father of four, or that they’d take one of Jo and Link’s twins from them. I’m eternally grateful neither scenario came to fruition.

Speaking of Link, his near-death experience came only weeks before his wife’s, as he was critically injured in the hospital explosion that ended Season 21. However, while Chris Carmack teased fans over that cliffhanger, his character's injuries turned out to be a ruse to throw us off the scent of Monica Beltran’s impending doom, which set up Amelia Shepherd’s need for a sabbatical.

It’s obvious that Meg Marinis values her characters’ lives — and the emotional state of the fans — and even if the writers do have to at least have a conversation about killing people off, I'm relieved to hear they're in no hurry to get rid of Richard Webber. I assume the same is true of Chandra Wilson’s Miranda Bailey.

We’ve got a bit of a wait before Grey’s Anatomy continues, so go ahead and start a rewatch of your favorite era and then tune in for its return at 10 p.m. ET Thursday, February 26, on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 has officially resumed on the 2026 TV schedule, picking up right where it left off in November, with Jo Wilson flatlining during an emergency C-section. Just like Camilla Luddington warned us, “Skyfall” was more brutal than the fall finale — particularly for Link, who was in agony running back and forth between his unconscious wife and the babies in the NICU. Amidst the stress, though, Chris Carmack recalled a funny story about why he had to redo one of his more emotional moments.

By the end of “Skyfall,” it seemed like Jo and both babies had all turned a corner and would be OK, but for the majority of the Grey’s Anatomy episode, there was very little encouraging news for Link to hold onto. That changed when Baby B — who was having heart problems — urinated, signaling that their methods were working. Chris Carmack opened up about what his character was experiencing in that moment, telling The Wrap:

Chris Carmack gave a great performance, with Link being exhausted from not sleeping and overwhelmed that not only did he have Jo and the twins to worry about, but their other children, Luna and Scout. (Also, his anxious realization that he’d forgotten to call in to work was so real and absolutely broke my heart.)

That’s why when Baby B finally showed signs of improvement, Link had such a strong reaction. The actor said:

I love that Chris Carmack’s instinct was to celebrate in a way that must have been deemed too rowdy for the other babies and parents in the NICU, but the shot they landed on — however dialed-down it was from that original take — ended up being my favorite part of the whole episode (especially when he high-fived that nurse). You've never seen a prouder pop, and it was palpable in that moment how desperate Link was for a win.

Fingers crossed, but the preview for next week’s episode “Heavy on Me” appears to show Jo getting to meet her little ones:

With Jo seemingly out of the woods, hopefully she and Link will give Baby A and Baby B some actual names sooner than later. Any guesses as to what those will be? I’m officially putting money on “Winnie,” for one of them, in honor of Winston for saving their lives. Grey’s Anatomy likes to do that kind of thing.

This episode was a big ball of nerves, and I’m ready to see what’s coming next, especially with Kim Raver teasing “messy” things to come and Kate Walsh making her return in a couple of weeks. Catch new episodes at 10 p.m. ET Thursdays on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu.

The wait is over! Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 is set to resume on the 2026 TV schedule on January 8, and I have to admit the weeks since that fall finale cliffhanger haven’t been too rough — probably because we got the good news of Kate Walsh’s impending return to hold us over. As for what to expect from the rest of the season, Kim Raver says things are going to get “messy,” and I’ve got some guesses about what she means.

Kim Raver Teases ‘Shock’ And ‘Surprise’ To Come On Grey’s Anatomy Season 22

We last left our beloved Seattle medical professionals in quite a dire state — at least for some. Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) was experiencing heart failure as Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) prepared to deliver her twins via emergency C-section. We also learned that Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. There was plenty of relationship drama as well, of course, and Kim Raver revealed her reaction to getting the new scripts, telling US Weekly:

Kim Raver’s character Teddy Altman might very well be a part of that messy situation, as she continues to navigate her separation from husband Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). Whatever it is, though, she sounds excited — and it sounds pretty major, as she continued:

So what could these shocking twists be?

Here Are My Theories On What Could Get 'Messy'

Of course, the January 8 episode “Skyfall” will reveal Jo’s fate and the fate of her and Atticus Lincoln’s (Chris Carmack) babies. Camilla Luddington has warned that the midseason premiere is even worse than the fall finale for Jo, but if anything happens to her or either one of the twins, that would be enough to make me rage-quit this series.

That said, I predict that at least some of the mess to come involves the doctors’ love lives. The fall finale saw Nora (Floriana Lima) call things off with Owen, and there is always so much potential for messiness when it comes to Owen and Teddy. I just hope they don’t get back together.

All apologies to Niko Terho’s Lucas Adams — forget Skywalker, I’m calling him McBroody — because I’m kind of on board with whatever Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd) has going on with Wes Bryant (Trevor Jackson).

Kim Raver also mentioned that she’s set to direct an episode centering around Meredith Grey and Nick Marsh (Ellen Pompeo and Scott Speedman), and while they have become one of Grey’s Anatomy’s most solid couples, I’m wondering if they might be responsible for one of Season 22’s bigger surprises.

As far as someone I don’t think is in danger, I predict that Richard Webber will be OK. The character’s cancer diagnosis comes alongside James Pickens Jr.’s revelation that he is now cancer-free after his own prostate cancer was caught early. He has been an advocate for early and regular screenings, particularly for Black men, and I think this storyline is going to be used to further the important message that early detection saves lives.

All in all, I’m just glad Grey’s Anatomy has returned, and I can’t wait for whatever twists the medical drama has in store. Catch new episodes at 10 p.m. ET Thursdays on ABC and streaming the next day with a Hulu subscription.

It turns out I was right to be concerned about at least one Grey’s Anatomy character ahead of the Season 22 fall finale, “When I Crash.” Camilla Luddington delivered on her promise of Jo’s story being one that will “shock” fans, as Jo and her twins were both in danger at the end of the episode that aired November 13 on the 2025 TV schedule. As tough as that cliffhanger was, it doesn’t sound like things are going to be any better when Season 22 resumes.

Camilla Luddington Says The Next Episode Of Grey’s Anatomy Is ‘Worse,’ And ‘Survival Is Not Guaranteed’

Remember back at the end of Season 21, when we were simply able to enjoy Jo and Link being in love and getting married? I know, that feels like seven years ago given what they’ve gone through in the first six episodes of Season 22. Grey’s fans spent the summer wondering if Chris Carmack’s Atticus Lincoln would die in the operating room explosion, leaving Jo a widow with four children and, now, the shoe’s on the other foot.

Link is now dealing with the possibility of losing his wife and/or two daughters, and as Camilla Luddington broke it all down for The Wrap, she certainly didn’t sound optimistic, saying that “survival is not guaranteed.” She talked about getting the scripts for “When I Crash” and the episode to follow, saying:

Grey’s Anatomy hasn’t been afraid to tackle heartbreaking stories involving babies in the past, but I feel no need to go down that road emotionally until it’s necessary. That day might come, though, as the actress warned:

Drink a lot of wine. Check. And yes, she did say it’s not happening until January, because…

Grey’s Anatomy Is On Hiatus Until 2026

While it sounds like the cast is aware of what’s to come, we’ve got to carry this cliffhanger through the holidays, because Grey’s Anatomy will return as part of the 2026 TV schedule, with the spring premiere set for Thursday, January 8. We can’t tell too much from the preview, except that we should probably bring tissues to this watch party:

I’m going to take the sounds of a baby crying as a good thing but, honestly, I won’t be OK until we have two babies. I also think the shot of Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) crying might be a response to Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) having cancer, which we learned in the finale.

Camilla Luddington’s Comments About Her Future On Grey’s Sound Ominous

Camilla Luddington joined Grey’s Anatomy in Season 9 way back in 2012, and with around 250 episodes under her belt, she said she’s just happy to have gotten this far, saying:

Does that sound a little bit like a goodbye to anybody else? The Wrap also asked her about an idea she said she had about bringing Katherine Heigl back as Izzie Stevens, but she said she never pitched it to the writers. Furthermore:

Um, yikes.

For months, during Grey’s Anatomy’s summer hiatus, fans debated if Atticus Lincoln would end up dead following the Season 21 finale explosion, making a widow out of Jo Wilson. Now, as the Season 22 midseason finale approaches on the 2025 TV schedule, the shoe is on the other foot, as it looks like Jo’s life could be in danger. Would Grey’s really kill off another main character so soon? Something Camilla Luddington said early in the season has me worried.

The Preview For ‘When I Crash’ Teases Emergencies For Jo And Teddy

It’s not just Jo who appears to get caught in a life-or-death situation in the trailer for the November 13 fall finale, but Teddy Altman as well. The episode, “When I Crash,” comes just weeks after Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales) died in the Season 22 premiere from injuries sustained in the blast and, now, we’re right back to worrying about these surgeons’ fates. Check out the preview:

It looks like Jo (Camilla Luddington) is going to experience some complications while delivering her twins, which is kind of expected, because when has Grey’s Anatomy ever given us a baby with no drama? It’s still shocking, though, to hear Jo say she can’t breathe and hear Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) tell Link (Chris Carmack) that “her heart is failing.”

Does he mean Jo? One of the babies?

Then there’s Teddy (Kim Raver), who slides underneath an unsecured bus — she really should know better — to try to help an injured person and appears to get trapped. Given her separation from Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), killing off Teddy might be an interesting direction to go, but I want to see more of her reignited fling with Sophia Bush’s Cass Beckman. (Not to mention, killing Teddy would only add to Grey’s Anatomy’s unfortunate “bury your gays” trope.)

What Camilla Luddington Teased About Jo’s Story This Season

The switch from being worried about Link to wondering what is going to happen to Jo reminded me of something Camilla Luddington said on her Call It What It Is podcast after the Season 22 premiere. She revealed:

The response elicited a gasp from co-host and former Grey’s regular Jessica Capshaw, who said she didn’t expect Jo’s story to be the most surprising. She also noted that with the podcast recently adding video, we were all now able to see the pained look on Camilla Luddington’s face when she made the above comment, which looked like this:

She looks like she's almost in tears!

Jessica Capshaw started to ask if the twins were going to be OK, but she decided to not inquire about anything else, in case Camilla Luddington’s face would end up spoiling a storyline. The Jo actress agreed, saying:

Well I guess now we can assume that Jo’s shocking storyline does have to do with the birth of her and Link’s twins. The big question is whether or not Grey’s Anatomy will kill off another character so quickly. Before Monica’s death, the last surgeon to die was Andrew DeLuca in Season 17.

Grey’s Anatomy, however, is fighting budget cuts by cutting the actors’ episode counts, with the show already writing in a hiatus for Caterina Scorsone’s Amelia Shepherd and sending Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey back to Boston.

The medical drama has been known to downsize when the cast gets too large, which is something Jessica Capshaw knows all too well. Her own character, Arizona Robbins, was written off ahead of Season 15, along with Sarah Drew’s April Kepner, allegedly for that reason.

Will Jo or Teddy be the next to go? Will Link be left to raise four children by himself? Will the twins survive (do NOT hurt those babies!)? Thankfully, the answers to these questions are likely just days away, with Grey’s Anatomy’s Season 22 fall finale airing at 10 p.m. ET Thursday, November 13, on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu.

Grey’s Anatomy fans met Camilla Luddington’s Jo Wilson way back in Season 9, and I think it’s fair to say her love life has been pretty traumatic — from her abusive ex-husband Paul Stadler to Alex Karev informing her via letter that he had reunited with Izzie Stevens. These days, however, she’s settled down with her longtime best friend Atticus Lincoln, and it’s lovely to see her in a safe, reliable marriage (assuming Link didn’t die in that finale explosion). I have to admit, though, I wasn’t always rooting for JoLink.

As we approach the Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 premiere — which hits the 2025 TV schedule on October 9 — I’m ready to admit I was wrong about wanting Jo and Link (Chris Carmack) to remain platonic friends. Let’s take a look back at their friends-to-lovers arc, why I fought their romance so hard and what ultimately changed my mind.

Jo And Link Were Established As Platonic Friends In Season 15

Atticus Lincoln joined the Grey-Sloan team at the beginning of the ABC medical drama’s 15th season, but it wasn’t until Episode 4, “Momma Knows Best,” (available to stream with a Hulu subscription or Netflix subscription) that he crossed paths with Jo at the hospital. Fresh off their honeymoon, Alex (Justin Chambers) and Jo were waiting for an elevator when she heard her old buddy’s voice and jumped, screaming, into his arms.

They were quick to establish each other as being like brother and sister after meeting as undergrads and waiting tables together at Jimmy’s Crab Shack. Jo and Link continued to be there for each other over the seasons.

When Jo learned she was a product of rape and refused to get out of bed for days, Link showed up with chicken soup, helped with her laundry and sat with her. He was also there for her when Alex left, offering to sit with her when she read the letter and then asking if she wanted space or to go day-drinking afterward.

Jo supported him through multiple breakups, too, including giving him a place to stay after Caterina Scorsone’s Amelia rejected his proposal. And in exactly zero of these situations was it suggested that there were any romantic feelings — just friends being concerned for one another.

It Was Unnecessary For Grey’s Anatomy To Retcon Link’s Crush On Jo

The friendship between Jo and Link was so beautiful, why would Grey’s Anatomy want to mess with it? Because Grey’s Anatomy hates platonic love.

In Season 18’s “Today Was a Fairytale,” everything changed between Link and Jo when he told her he’d had a huge crush on her back when they worked at Jimmy’s Crab Shack. At first she seemed weirded out by his casual admission, but then it was clear that she was looking at him through a new lens. (Too bad Link was still in love with Amelia.)

It would be one thing if Link started to see Jo differently over time, but retconning their friendship to suggest Link had always had feelings for her doesn’t make any sense, because nothing in Chris Carmack’s performance or Link’s actions toward Jo suggested that to be the case.

Link’s Confession Kicked Off A Season And A Half Of Bad Communication

Of course at that point, it was a foregone conclusion that Jo and Link would end up taking their friendship to the next level. They slept together in Season 18’s “No Time to Die” (a rebound for Link, who was still crying over Amelia), and that nearly broke them when they both wrongly assumed what the hookup meant for the other.

Seasons 18 and 19 robbed us of so much of what we love about JoLink. They were no longer honest with each other. There was jealousy, miscommunication, awkwardness, and nobody to help them with their laundry!

Rather than admit her feelings for Link, Jo kicked him out, and when he finally confronted her about using him for sex (?), she admitted she fell in love with him and wanted to protect their friendship since he didn’t feel the same way. Of course, while he was stammering to find words — presumably that he did, in fact, feel the same way — she stormed off, and it took 23 more episodes (yes, I counted) for him to finally say it.

I wasn’t a huge fan of how this played out, since it felt like one conversation would have saved, like, a year of frustration, but by this point, I had actually given up my fight against JoLink as a couple. Here’s what happened.

A Season 19 Story Involving Jo’s Daughter Got Me On Board With JoLink

In Season 19, Jo realized that Luna may have trouble hearing and took her to get some tests. She started to spiral when she got to the clinic, overwhelmed and worried about her daughter, when Link showed up! She was surprised to see him, which means she didn’t ask him to be there with her, but he did his best to keep her calm as her mind listed off the worst-case scenarios. This is the JoLink of old I’d been missing!

After it was confirmed that Luna was losing her hearing, Link tried to keep things on a positive note, but Jo asked for some time to process the news while they waited to see if there was a more serious underlying issue.

OK, so Link did not give her that space, but it was his next move that made me realize they were endgame: Link started teaching his son Scout sign language!

This didn’t go over well with Jo, but I don’t think there’s any bigger gesture that proves that Jo and Link are a family, regardless of what they label themselves. He was already planning for their future together, accepting her and Luna, ready to face whatever hurdles came along.

Jo did come around anyway, once it was established that they weren't dealing with cancer or encephalitis, etc., and the way she ran through the hospital to share the good news with Link immediately was more romantic than any rom-com ending, in my book.

Now That I’m On Board, I Really Don’t Want Link To Die

The relationship between these two characters hasn’t been as easy-peasy lemon squeezy as it was before romance entered the equation, but they’ve got a good thing going. They got married in Season 21 and found out they were expecting twin girls. But there is the issue of the hospital explosion — and the fact that we were led to believe Link was in the room where it happened.

Camilla Luddington has teased “hard moments” ahead, while Chris Carmack is having a little too much fun with the speculation. So before we find out if newlywed Jo lost her best friend and husband and has to raise 3-4 kids alone (assuming Amelia would take Scout most of the time), I would like the record to show that I am admitting I was wrong about JoLink. The friendship that I was so protective of is exactly why they make such a good couple.

Ever since Grey’s Anatomy’s 21st season ended in explosive fashion three months ago, fans have been biding their time until its return to the 2025 TV calendar, when we find out who — if anyone — was killed and how Grey Sloan Memorial will recover from its latest disaster. I knew the finale was going to frustrate me and the wait for October would be long, but after reading Camilla Luddington’s comments about the Season 22 premiere, I simply cannot hold on any longer.

“How Do I Live,” the final episode of Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, ended on a cliffhanger, when a gas canister exploded, taking out what appeared to be one of the operating rooms. Viewers saw the explosion from the parking lot below, as Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey made her way to her car, and it sounds like Season 22 opens in the chaotic aftermath, with Camilla Luddington telling E! News:

I actually love the idea of three movie-length episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, especially if there’s as much action as Camilla Luddington describes. The “hard moments” she’s talking about could very well involve her character, Jo Wilson, too.

The episode seemed to suggest that Atticus Lincoln (aka Chris Carmack’s Link) was in the OR that blew up — which Carmack had some fun with by recreating a classic Friends scene — and while even the Grey’s Anatomy cast didn’t know who died, the potential loss of Jo's husband has weighed heavily on Camilla Luddington during their time off. She said:

The actress said she had to “take a deep breath” before returning to work because “it’s been a lot.” These comments don’t seem to bode well for the ortho god, though Chris Carmack gave us hope for Link’s survival when he spoke with CinemaBlend in the weeks following the finale.

Of course, Camilla Luddington could be equally upset about losing any of her other castmates as well. Fans are assuming Jo is safe, since she had told Link earlier in the episode that she was headed home. As for who else definitely survived the explosion, there’s just Meredith (with Ellen Pompeo already confirmed for Season 22) and Ben Warren (Jason George), who was seen running from the parking lot back into the building in the seconds following the blast.

Regardless of which Grey Sloan doctor (or doctors) has gone to meet their maker, the Jo Wilson portrayer is promising big things when Grey’s Anatomy returns:

It is unfathomable to me that we still have over a month before getting any closure on the Season 21 cliffhanger. I was already excited for what’s to come, but Camilla Luddington has made the wait unbearable with promises of action and heartbreak.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 is set to premiere at 10 p.m. ET Thursday, October 9 on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu.

Not even the stars of Grey’s Anatomy know who died in the Season 21 finale explosion (if anybody!), but that’s about to change. Camilla Luddington revealed that the cast is about to start production on the 22nd season (premiering on the 2025 TV schedule October 16). And, while she promises “craziness” to come, it was a different detail from a recent social media post that had fans calling the actress out.

Camilla Luddington plays Jo Wilson on Grey’s Anatomy, and she — like everyone else — is really invested in whether or not her on-screen husband, Link, was killed off in the finale cliffhanger. Referencing uncertainty about what’s to come, she posted some pics from a recent girls trip to Instagram with the caption:

She then included an asterisk to clarify that the “friend” she was referring to was Jo, her character who — in context of the show — is pregnant with Link’s twin daughters.

But did anyone catch Camilla Luddington’s slip-up there? She referred to the Grey’s Anatomy hospital as “Seattle Grace,” rather than “Grey Sloan Memorial,” which became its name in Season 9, Episode 17 “Transplant Wasteland” way back in 2013. Fans definitely didn’t miss it and fully called her out in the comments, writing:

I’m not sure if people thought that Camilla Luddington using a defunct name for the hospital was a clue as to what happened to Link, or why such a mistake would make anyone nervous. However, as it so happens, there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for the slip-up. The actress herself jumped in the comments to say:

On Call It What It Is, Camilla Luddington and Jessica Capshaw recently relived the Season 8 plane crash finale, including a hilariously terrible fan run-in Capshaw had while filming as Arizona Robbins. Back then, the hospital was still called Seattle Grace.

Strangely enough, it was the events of that very episode that inspired the name change, with Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan ultimately succumbing to their injuries. Jackson Avery later proposed the hospital rebrand itself as Grey Sloan Memorial, and that’s what it has been ever since.

Now that that’s cleared up, I’m excited to hear that the Grey’s Anatomy cast and crew are gearing up again, and I can’t wait to see what transpires in the Season 22 premiere at 10 p.m. ET, Thursday, October 16, on ABC. Episodes will be available to stream the next day with a Hulu subscription, while the first 21 seasons are also available to watch with a Netflix subscription or Disney+ subscription.

With months still to go until Grey’s Anatomy returns to the 2025 TV schedule, fans have a lot of time to consider who they think died in the explosive Season 21 finale. But they’re not the only ones. The stars of the longtime ABC medical drama are in the dark as well and, after Camilla Luddington and Harry Shum Jr. gave their opinions, I just can’t get behind what Shum had to say.

Not to brag, but I pretty much called it that Piper Perabo’s character would go full Yellowstone when she joined Grey’s Anatomy. While she didn’t have to fight Beth Dutton or anything, her character, Jenna, did fashion a bomb and hold multiple surgeons hostage until they performed brain surgery on her 9-year-old daughter. Everyone had seemingly made it out safely, but in the final seconds of Season 21, the explosion occurred. Harry Shum Jr., aka Blue Kwan, gave US Weekly his way-too-optimistic wish for the upcoming Season 22 reveal, saying:

I think even Harry Shum Jr. knows how unlikely it is that the explosion happened in someone’s mind. Granted, Grey’s Anatomy hasn’t killed off a series regular since Andrew DeLuca in Season 17 — despite losing several cast members in other ways — but I think they’d be more likely to say the O.R. in question was empty than to say there was no explosion at all.

However, I do believe someone died; I just don’t know who. We were led to believe that Chris Carmack’s Link was the one to lose his life, alongside Nurse Linda — a theory that Carmack himself perpetuated by recreating a famous Friends scene. I bought that at first, especially given the idyllic life Link was leading up to that final moment.

Link and Jo Wilson got married in the penultimate episode, then celebrated a “hospital honeymoon” before Jo revealed to her husband that they were having twin girls. That kind of bliss is only ever rewarded with death, right? After some thought, though, I'm wondering if Link was a red herring. I'm so confused! I knew this finale would frustrate me!

If it is Link, though Camilla Luddington hasn’t been informed, but she admitted that it’s been on her mind. She said:

Link’s death — or even serious injury — would be devastating for Jo as she gets closer to birthing their twins. I’m sure Camilla Luddington doesn’t want Jo to become a widowed mother of four. She continued:

As of now, the only people who we know are safe are Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Ben Warren (Jason George), who were both in the parking lot when the explosion happened. Pompeo’s return for Season 22 has already been confirmed.

I may not agree with Harry Shum Jr.’s hopes of a hallucinated explosion, but stranger things have been hallucinated on this show before, so who knows? Grey’s Anatomy is currently one of the best shows to binge on Netflix now, and all 21 seasons are also available to stream with a Hulu subscription or Disney+ subscription.

No premiere date has been announced for Grey’s Anatomy Season 22, but with the official cancellation of Doctor Odyssey, it’s possible we might see it shift back to its earlier Thursday timeslot this fall. Stay tuned for more details.

Thursdays are typically the days that many TV lovers have designated as “the day we watch Grey’s Anatomy." Last week, though, many of us were likely too distracted by Thanksgiving feasts, a rainy Macy’s parade and Tom Brady pretending to eat turducken while working the holiday football games to miss our favorite Seattle surgeons too much. Unfortunately now that Thanksgiving has passed, we can’t just return to our regular-scheduled programming, as Grey’s Anatomy is on hiatus until the 2025 TV schedule. So when exactly will Season 21 resume, and why are fans saying the cliffhanger has already been spoiled?

Grey’s Anatomy will not return to the 2024 TV schedule, so you can imagine the writers left us with some juicy plot to ponder on its midseason finale. “Drop It Like It’s Hot” found Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) and a pregnant Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) involved in a hostage situation while trying to get ice from a convenience store. At the end of the episode, Lucas and the robber struggle over the gun and (of course) it discharges. We have to wait until March 6, 2025, to find out who, if anyone, caught that bullet, but fans think the promo already spoiled one character’s fate.

We see Jo being wheeled in on a gurney, but it’s unknown if she was shot or if this is related to the bleeding she started to encounter shortly before the struggle over the gun. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) also appears to tell Jo’s partner Link (Chris Carmack), “Pull yourself together so she can fall apart.”

Grey’s Anatomy is definitely leading us to believe something has happened with the JoLink babies, but either way, it appears that Lucas will not suffer the same fate as his grandfather — Amelia and Derek Shepherd’s father — who died in an armed robbery. An eagle-eyed fan on Reddit noted a certain someone’s appearance in the top right corner of the frame:

Not that I’d consider myself the leading expert on Niko Terho’s mouth, but that does look to me like Lucas’ face. Also, since he seems to be running with the stretcher, the blood on his scrubs is likely either Jo’s or the robber’s. We also see Teddy with an unknown patient later in the preview, but that can’t be Lucas, since Simone and Jules are in the operating room with her. The interns wouldn’t be allowed in their friend's surgery, especially Simone since she’s dating Lucas.

Earlier in Season 21 Lucas was involved in a scary helicopter situation with Levi Schmitt, when a storm hit and they had to make an emergency landing. I said then that there was no way Grey’s Anatomy would kill off McDreamy’s nephew — especially at a time when it’s losing several other cast members — and this preview is all the proof I need that Lucas is OK.

We have a few months to wait, though, before we find out what’s going on with Jo, and what drama awaits Teddy and Owen, with more Sophia Bush-related issues introduced in the midseason finale. (Did anybody else’s eyes roll out of their head at Owen’s reaction to Cass touching Teddy’s shoulder?)

While we wait painstakingly for March 6, 2025, you can rewatch the first eight episodes of Season 21 with a Hulu subscription, with the first 20 Grey’s Anatomy seasons available to stream on Hulu as well as with a Netflix subscription.

With Grey’s Anatomy in its 21st season — set to resume on the 2025 TV schedule — we’ve seen characters leave the show in all kinds of ways. Cristina Yang got her dream job in Switzerland; Lexie Grey died in a plane crash; George O’Malley jumped in front of a bus to save a stranger. It was Alex Karev, though, who boasts possibly the most controversial exit, leaving his wife Jo with nothing more than a goodbye letter. Fans were incensed over the betrayal, but surprisingly, Camilla Luddington wasn’t. The actress explained why she actually liked the storyline, and I honestly had never thought of it from that perspective.

After 15 years of playing Alex Karev on Grey’s Anatomy, Justin Chambers decided in 2020 he was ready to pursue other roles. Rather than some of the long, drawn-out goodbyes that we’ve seen, however, midway through Season 16, Alex just disappeared. In notes to Jo Wilson, Meredith Grey and Miranda Bailey, he explained that he’d reconnected with Izzie Stevens and was staying with her to raise the children he hadn’t known about. There was instant backlash from the Grey’s fandom on Jo’s behalf, but Camilla Luddington had a much more thoughtful take, telling Variety:

Personally, I felt like the abrupt exit was disrespectful to the fans who had followed Alex Karev’s journey for so long as well as to one of the Grey’s Anatomy’s OG actors. I also wanted that closure for Jo, because how dare Alex try to say he was doing the honorable thing if that meant just leaving his wife in a letter?

However, I hadn’t thought about it from the perspective of that being a lot of people’s actual experience. Maybe not “breakup by letter” specifically, but it’s true that so many people don’t get that closure and have to find that healing inside themselves. Camilla Luddington said she heard from so many people with those stories:

Knowing that Alex Karev’s infuriating non-goodbye was something that made so many people feel seen and maybe even helped them process their own experiences definitely takes away some of the bitterness I have over that storyline.

Grey’s Anatomy star Camilla Luddington unwittingly found herself in the headlines a couple of years ago when one of the medical drama’s writers was exposed for having lied about her cancer and other traumas that inspired major storylines. The Elisabeth Finch scandal was explored in depth in a recent docuseries to hit the 2024 TV schedule, Anatomy of Lies, and after being name-dropped several times in the three-parter, Luddington shared her candid thoughts about the situation.

Anatomy of Lies, which can be streamed with a Peacock subscription, dives into how Elisabeth Finch lied her way to the head of the Grey’s Anatomy writers room to become a co-executive producer. She apparently worked closely with many of the actors, including Camilla Luddington, who declined to be part of the docuseries. However, the Jo Wilson portrayer did address the scandal on her and Jessica Capshaw’s podcast Call It What It Is, saying:

Elisabeth Finch is the inspiration behind Debbie Allen’s Catherine Fox living with cancer, and Finch also wrote one of Grey’s Anatomy’s best episodes, Season 15’s “Silent All These Years,” in which Jo learns she was conceived in rape. According to former writer Kiley Donovan on Anatomy of Lies, it was Donovan who had the traumatic past, which she had allegedly shared with Finch in confidence, not expecting it to show up in one of Finch's scripts. Finch, meanwhile, has said the rape story was Camilla Luddington’s idea.

The actress did not provide any clarity on the story’s origins, saying she didn’t feel comfortable talking about her on-set interactions with Elisabeth Finch (whose name she even refused to say). Luddington chose instead to speak to how the entire situation affected her mental health. She continued:

Camilla Luddington went on to say that learning of all the lies has affected her ability to trust others, and co-host Jessica Capshaw — aka Grey’s Anatomy’s Arizona Robbins — added that she also had believed everything Elisabeth Finch said and never had a moment of suspicion.

While Jessica Capshaw said she is generally an optimistic person, when it comes to this situation and people who “show themselves to be liars,” she’s less willing to give grace:

Anatomy of Lies tells a story that’s truly stranger than fiction, because the lengths Elisabeth Finch went to in order to perpetuate her lies are really unbelievable. While Jessica Capshaw reassured Camillia Luddington that the writer was the only person who had done anything wrong, Luddington clearly didn’t like being so closely associated with the story, saying:

Elisabeth Finch is no longer part of the Grey’s Anatomy team, but the stories she gave to the characters still exist, with Catherine’s cancer playing a pretty big part in Season 21 so far. When Grey’s Anatomy returned to the 2024 TV schedule, we knew that Jason George would be returning as Ben Warren, after Station 19 became one of this year’s TV cancellations. However, given the fact that showrunner Meg Marinis has continued to play it coy regarding Stefania Spampinato and her character’s future, it’s not all that surprising that Carina DeLuca hasn’t been seen. That’s probably why it was such a thrill that the fan-favorite OB/GYN got mentioned — twice! — in “I Can See Clearly Now.” I’m not sure what to make of the name-drops, and fans seem equally conflicted, as they reacted with both anger and hope.

In the opening minutes of the October 10 episode, we saw Jo (Camilla Luddington) informing Link (Chris Carmack) that she was going to see a doctor outside of Grey Sloan for her pregnancy in order to maintain some privacy. Link didn't fully understand her reasoning, dropping this gem:

The mention of Carina’s name — and the inevitable mental imagery that accompany Link’s thoughts — threw the fandom into a frenzy, and I fully understand why anger was the first emotion to kick in. One fan posted on X (Twitter):

Ben Warren’s return to Grey’s Anatomy was practically written into Station 19’s series finale, but there’s been nary a word regarding Carina, except for Meg Marinis saying she “exists in this world,” which we obviously know, seeing as Stefania Spampinato started on Grey’s and has continued to appear in every season despite being a series regular on Station 19.

Hearing her mentioned on the episode only reminded fans of her absence. Other reactions included:

Over the course of the episode, however, Jo had a change of heart, and at the end, she reveals to Link that she’s decided that sacrificing a little privacy was worth their baby getting the best care. She’s talking about Carina, right? RIGHT?!

One post went viral over the exciting news that Carina (who was mentioned for a second time by Link) will apparently be caring for Jo, reigniting hope that we’ll actually get to see her again:

If Stefania Spampinato isn’t making an appearance this season, they easily could have just had Jo maintain her decision to seek care elsewhere. Since she didn’t, many fans are now more optimistic than ever that Carina will be back, posting:

I’m still conflicted about what (if anything) the Carina name-drops mean, and I’m still not convinced they’re bringing her back. As promising as the mentions were, if Meg Marinis planned to have Carina on this season, why keep it such a secret when they were so open about Ben Warren’s return?

The show has also set a precedent for keeping characters alive in name only. Back in Season 17 I was convinced that Sandra Oh was coming back as Cristina Yang after five name-drops, a text exchange between Cristina and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and several other former cast members returning as Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) fought COVID. However, Oh has made it clear she has no intention of reprising the role. Fool me once, Grey’s Anatomy …

Of course, only time will tell whether or not Stefania Spampinato will return home to Grey’s Anatomy, so stay tuned, as new episodes (possibly with some steamier stories in its later timeslot) airing at 10 p.m. ET Thursdays on ABC.

The O.R. is open, as Grey’s Anatomy has returned to the 2024 TV schedule, but as we got a peek into the love lives of Grey Sloan’s interns in the Season 21 premiere, fans may have realized there were some familiar faces missing from the halls of the hospital. Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman, for instance, were amongst the main characters who weren’t featured in the September 26 episode, and that’s because series regulars across the board are seeing reduced episode counts this season due to cuts in the Grey’s Anatomy budget. Camilla Luddington addressed how the cast is feeling amidst the changes.

Camilla Luddington has played Jo Wilson on Grey’s Anatomy since 2012, and her character had a pretty big role in the Season 21 premiere, when she told her partner Link (Chris Carmack) that she’s pregnant. This ensures some wild times to come for the longtime BFFs, but Luddington confirmed there will be some weeks when the parents-to-be won’t be featured, telling Variety:

I guess we can call that quality over quantity, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing. There are so. many. characters. that it does seem hard to give everyone their fair shake. If we can really focus on a smaller number per episode, it seems like that better serves the storytelling.

The rest of the cast seemed to be on board as well, Camilla Luddington said, as she continued:

It’s very promising to hear that every character should be getting a satisfying story this season, because it’s not just the budget cuts that could possibly be working against Grey’s Anatomy. The show was also shifted to a later timeslot to make room for a second Thursday night medical drama, Doctor Odyssey, and is losing series regulars Jake Borelli and Midori Francis.

Some fans are frustrated by the cast members’ exits, even as the show continues to add to its cast by welcoming back Ellen Pompeo, Scott Speedman, Kali Rocha (who was last seen in Season 4), Jason George after Station 19’s cancellation and Season 20 newcomer Natalie Morales. Jesse Williams also appeared in the season premiere as Jackson Avery, and there’s a new chaplain in town, with Michael Thomas Grant set to make his debut.

It’s easy to see how the Grey’s Anatomy crew has their hands full. If cutting back the actors’ episode counts benefits the story and the budget, that sounds good to me, and it sounds like the cast as a whole is also excited for what's to come.

It was a major bummer for fans of So Help Me Todd when it was announced the show was joining the list of 2024 TV cancellations. After wrapping the CBS dramedy’s second and final season, star Skylar Astin took a look back, not at Todd the private investigator, but rather another character of the same name whose run also came to an end too soon — Todd Eames on Grey’s Anatomy. Likely best remembered for the “sex bear” incident, Todd was briefly involved with Jo Wilson, and he recently dived deep into those cringey memories to explain how that storyline came about.

Skylar Astin recently reunited with Grey’s Anatomy’s Camilla Luddington, who plays Jo on the ABC medical drama, on her and Jessica Capshaw’s Call It What It Is podcast. Sparks flew immediately between Jo and Todd upon Astin’s Grey’s Anatomy debut on Season 18, but the romance was short-lived when the actor got the call to do So Help Me Todd. The Grey's team was tasked with writing him off after just four appearances. The actor said:

Giving Jo the ick is certainly one way to get rid of a love interest in quick fashion. Camilla Luddington agreed that they’d both been playing the long game, and she had been asking for a fun relationship for Jo after her abusive ex-husband Paul and then Alex Karev’s unexpectedly sudden exit.

For those who didn’t know or remember why Jo’s feelings for Todd changed so abruptly, Skylar Astin explained the sex bear of it all, saying:

As cringe as that fact may be, I still think it’s a pretty fitting character detail for the Pitch Perfect actor, and it’s a real crime that they never shot that scene. They did, however, film what happened next. The actor continued:

What a way to go out! It’s interesting that Skylar Astin added that the door might be left open for his return someday — should things not work out between Jo and Chris Carmack’s Link. As for how they could get around his unceremonious demise, Astin joked that the writers could always reverse it by saying he had meant “bare” as in naked. Camilla Luddington suggested they reveal that Link had sabotaged Todd’s relationship by telling him to buy the sex bear. One thing’s for sure — if they ever do reunite Jo and Todd, I’m going to need to hear that post-orgasm opera performance.

Grey’s Anatomy wrapped up its 20th season on Thursday with an emotional finale that included a natural disaster, some huge revelations about some of our favorite Seattle surgeons and one grand gesture involving Miranda Bailey and the interns to keep us in suspense until fall. Before all that, though, the cast showed off some major Kenergy, as the guys of Grey Sloan Memorial re-created Ryan Gosling’s viral “I’m Just Ken” performance from the Academy Awards, going viral themselves for their impassioned take on the Barbie musical number.

Chris Carmack, who plays Atticus Lincoln on Grey’s Anatomy, led the way, looking very much the part of Barbie’s companion. This is one TikTok video you just have to see for yourself: 

Just like Ryan Gosling started his Oscars number sitting behind Margot Robbie, Chris Carmack — wearing a fuzzy white jacket over his pink scrubs and a rainbow-colored cowboy hat — was seated behind Camilla Luddington, who plays Link’s on-screen love interest Jo Wilson. Luddington and Natalie Morales (who joined Season 20 as Monica Beltran) gave the same classic reactions as Robbie and Billie Eilish, as Carmack stood up and continued the number with the hospital’s other Kens. 

Kevin McKidd and Anthony Hill (aka Drs. Owen Hunt and Winston Ndugu) were chief amongst them, with Jake Borelli — who will end his time as Levi Schmitt in Season 21 — strumming his guitar. Niko Terho (McDreamy’s nephew, Lucas Adams) gave his signature smolder, Harry Shum Jr. (Blue Kwan) made a brief appearance, and even Richard Webber portrayer James Pickens Jr. got in on the fun.

Fans seemed to love the Barbie-inspired number, with comments including:

The boys were no doubt inspired by their co-stars, as Camilla Luddington and the Grey’s Anatomy women went full Barbie earlier this year in celebration of Jessica Capshaw’s return as Arizona Robbins.

It’s wonderful to see the cast having so much fun and making viral videos — especially ones that don’t involve them scrubbing in on real surgeries — but things may not be as “beachy” as they appear. Grey’s Anatomy will be in a new timeslot when Season 21 hits the 2024 TV schedule, and budget cuts could mean less screen time for cast members across the board. The longtime medical drama keeps losing cast members, too, with news of Midori Francis’ exit coming just days after Jake Borelli’s. 

The head honchos at ABC don’t seem too concerned, however, and the Grey’s Anatomy loyal will likely be more than willing to shift their Thursday viewing parties in order to keep watching all of the delicious Seattle drama. While we wait, all 20 seasons of the series are available to stream with a Hulu subscription, should you want to rewatch Grey’s Anatomy from the starting point of your favorite era. 

It’s long been known that Grey’s Anatomy puts a lot of effort into making its medical cases as accurate as possible — which can lead to some incredibly long days for the big surgery scenes — but a new revelation has fans shocked at just how far the actors have had to go. An interview with members of the cast is going viral on TikTok after Camilla Luddington and others opened up about scrubbing in for real-life surgeries, and the comments from baffled viewers are hilarious. 

Grey’s Anatomy Actors Describe Actually Scrubbing Into Surgeries 

Camilla Luddington, Caterina Scorsone and Kim Raver dropped by The Jennifer Hudson Show recently and talked about one experience that creator Shonda Rhimes required of them before they joined Grey’s Anatomy. Check out the viral clip below: 

Jennifer Hudson was aghast that the Grey’s cast had to go to such lengths, especially when Camilla Luddington (aka Jo Wilson) explained that the procedures they witnessed were actually pretty significant. She said: 

Kim Raver, who plays Teddy Altman on the show, said she also scrubbed into a heart surgery. She said she was excited about the experience at first, but then started to get a little woozy — as did I when she described that smell — and ended up having to stand against the wall to keep from passing out. 

Fans Are Shocked At The Grey’s Anatomy Actors’ Admissions 

Jennifer Hudson was not the only one taken aback by the actors’ stories. We're assuming the hospital would have had to get clearance from their patients before allowing the actors to be present for the surgeries, and TikTok user Tashaluv tried to imagine how those conversations might have gone, commenting on the viral clip: 

I actually cannot imagine being stressed out about a major surgery and then being asked if some A-list actor could be there to see the inside of my body for research for a role. How incredibly bizarre. Several other commenters were just as befuddled by this, saying:

Those patients certainly would have a story to tell afterward! Hopefully none of the Grey’s Anatomy cast members witnessed any complications during their surgeries, because it seems like that would be a pretty traumatic experience. Although, I guess they could then use that to make their performances even more realistic? 

Shonda Rhimes is considered a TV genius for a reason, and with the medical drama in its 20th season, it’s obvious that she’s done something right. Maybe getting her actors in that surgical mindset from the beginning has contributed to its record-setting run.

Jessica Capshaw’s Return Will Make Fans ‘Really Happy’ 

Jessica Capshaw hasn’t appeared on Grey’s Anatomy since 2017, when Arizona was written off after the 14th season. Longtime fans have been waiting to see the bubbly surgeon rollerskate her way back on the show for weeks now, and their patience will pay off in “Baby Can I Hold You.” Ahead of the episode, Meg Marinis spoke to EW about what we can expect, saying: 

That sure sounds like a lot to pack into one episode, but it’s good to know they’re making the most of Jessica Capshaw’s comeback. Apparently the call was made when they found the perfect plotline for her character. Marinis continued: 

Grey’s Anatomy certainly does like to call on former cast members for cameos, but one face we won’t be seeing this time around is Arizona’s one-time wife Callie Torres. The showrunner previously addressed the lack of a “Calzona” reunion, saying it can be hard to time things with people’s schedules, and that this story is more related to Arizona’s specialty. 

Jessica Capshaw And Camilla Luddington To Start A Podcast 

Jessica Capshaw may not be sticking around Season 20 for long, but it appears her dive back into the Grey’s Anatomy universe may not be over. On a preview for her April 4 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, it was announced that she’s starting a podcast with fellow Grey’s star Camilla Luddington. Capshaw explained, per People: 

There weren’t many other details of the upcoming podcast available, including the name of it or if it will be a rewatch podcast or feature other actors from the show, but Jessica Capshaw did say it’s coming soon, set to premiere in early summer.

This good news follows the announcement that Grey’s Anatomy has been renewed for Season 21 this fall — one of several TV series to be renewed recently. It’s a great time to be a Grey’s fan, and if you’re looking forward to seeing Jessica Capshaw, tune into ABC at 9 p.m. ET Thursday, April 4, with the episode available to stream the next day with a Hulu subscription. 

On Thursdays, we watch Grey’s Anatomy. That’s just how it’s been every fall since 2005 — until 2023, that is. ABC’s hit medical drama was delayed due to the writer’s and actor’s strikes, leaving us without our weekly doses of life-saving surgeries and heart-pounding hookups between the Seattle doctors. But now Grey’s Anatomy’s long-awaited Season 20 premiere is finally upon us, and while we may only have 10 episodes to look forward to, my expectations are sky-high for this milestone season. Join me for a quick look back at where we left things, and then there are a few things I hope are in store.

It’s been nearly 10 months since Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 ended with a two-hour finale that saw Meredith Grey’s return, Simone Griffith’s runaway bride moment and Teddy Altman’s possibly deadly toothache. That’s not to mention several developments in the relationship department. Let’s start with a quick recap of what went down last May. 

What Happened On The Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 Finale 

The finale’s first hour, “Wedding Bell Blues,” saw Simone (Alexis Floyd) admit that she didn’t want to marry Trey (William Martinez); however, the joy of seeing her and Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) finally get together was short-lived when Trey ended up a patient at the hospital. Jump all the way to the end of Grey’s Anatomy’s second hour, “Happily Ever After?” and we saw Teddy (Kim Raver) collapse in the OR after complaining of a toothache.

In the middle of those two events, there was a lot going on in the relationship department. Mika Yasuda and Taryn Helm (Midori Francis and Jaicy Elliot, respectively) had a perfect first date; Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane) expressed both love and fury for Blue Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) after a medical emergency involving her roommate; and Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack) finally came clean about their true feelings for each other.

Meanwhile in Boston, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) might have lost all of her Alzheimer’s funding (that remains to be seen), but at least she worked things out with Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) and Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) put their divorce on hold, deciding that being at different places in their careers didn’t necessarily have to mean the end of their marriage. And after nearly drinking his wife’s martini when he thought he was going to die in a plane crash, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) was last seen staring down a vodka soda.

That preview doesn't give us too detailed an idea of what to expect, but here are a few things I hope we'll see in the next 10 episodes:

Helm And Masuda Should Become Our New Power Couple 

I am really loving the potential of Masuda and Helm as Grey’s Anatomy’s new power couple. Their personalities seem to complement each other, with Helm maybe providing a little stability for an often-frazzled Yasuda. The show is in need of a solid LGBTQ+ couple, and even with Alex Landi coming back as Niko Kim this season, I don’t see him and Levi Schmitt being quite as fun, if they even get back together. A long-term Helm/Yasuda romance would also bring back that resident/intern power dynamic that’s worked for the show since Meredith and McDreamy. 

With Station 19 Ending, Will Ben Warren Come Back To Grey Sloan?

Grey’s Anatomy’s second spinoff was born when Ben Warren (Jason George) was inspired to leave his job in the medical field and join the Seattle Fire Department. With Station 19 being canceled after its upcoming seventh season, what will happen to him then? Ben can’t just disappear like some of the other firefighters inevitably will, because he’s married to Chandra Wilson’s Miranda Bailey. It seems to make the most sense for him to move back to Grey Sloan Memorial, and his Station 19 storyline actually supports that move.

After Dean Miller died on Station 19, Ben and Miranda became the legal guardians of his daughter Pru — on the condition from Dean’s parents that Ben stop risking his life as a firefighter. Season 6 saw Ben having to take a step back anyway after he was injured during a rescue, and a move back to the hospital would solve this issue once and for all — and possibly mean some more cameos from that cute, cute, cute Pru Miller. 

Season 20 Might Tell Us Who Lucas’ Mother Is 

When a new class of interns was introduced on Grey’s Anatomy Season 19, we were shocked to learn that Lucas was actually the nephew of Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd. So while we know that Lucas has familial ties to Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), we don't know which one is Lucas’ mom of her and Derek's three other sisters. I think we might find out sooner than later.

Lucas learned last season that he’d been living with undiagnosed ADHD, and as he presumably goes through the process to find medication to manage his neurodiversity, it would make sense for his mother to be involved. All of the Shepherds have or had a background in medicine, so Lucas is probably interested to know why his mother either didn’t recognize the signs of his ADHD or take steps to get him diagnosed earlier. 

Will We See More Familiar Faces On Grey’s Anatomy Season 20? 

Grey’s Anatomy often treats its fans to blasts from the past with cameos or recurring spots for our favorite doctors from previous seasons. Season 20 will be no different, as Jessica Capshaw is returning as Arizona Robbins (in addition to the previously mentioned Alex Landi). However, with this being a milestone season, I’m hoping there are some surprises planned. 

If Teddy turns out to have a serious heart condition, might they call on the expertise of cardio goddess Cristina Yang? (I will never stop hoping for a Sandra Oh comeback.) Could Katherine Heigl return as Izzie Stevens following the Grey’s Anatomy reunion at the Emmy Awards? I know both of those scenarios are long shots, but what’s a more appropriate time to pull out the big guns than for a series’ 20th season?

Whatever happens, I’m just thrilled that Grey’s Anatomy is finally back. Season 20 premieres at 9 p.m. ET Thursday, March 14, on ABC and will be available to stream the next day on Hulu. 

After enduring a hard, cold fall with no new Grey’s Anatomy — or much scripted television at all, for that matter — the wait for the medical drama’s milestone 20th season is almost over. This season does appear to be shaping up to be a good one (even at a shortened 10-episode order), with Jessica Capshaw reprising her role as the fan-favorite Arizona Robbins. As happy as the Grey’s loyal were to hear the news, Capshaw’s co-star Camilla Luddington was especially thrilled, and the actresses celebrated by going full Barbie in an amazing video on social media.

Jessica Capshaw joined Grey’s Anatomy as the bubbly, roller-skating pediatric and fetal surgeon Arizona in Season 5, where she was part of some huge storylines before being written off after Season 14. She’s back now, baby, roller skates and all, as she and Camilla Luddington — who plays Jo Wilson — lip synced to Lizzo’s “Pink” from the Barbie movie: 

As a longtime Grey’s Anatomy fan, I can’t tell you how excited I am to see Jessica Capshaw back on that set, with other cast members including Caterina Scorsone, Alexis Floyd and Midori Francis making appearances in the viral Instagram post. The choice to highlight the color pink also appears to be a reference to the pink scrubs donned by Grey Sloan Memorial’s OB/GYN staffers. Could that be a hint about why Arizona is returning to Seattle?

Camilla Luddington’s “Galentine’s Day” post boasted about her “best friend” being back on set, and several of the Grey’s Anatomy past and present cast members were impressed by ladies’ social media prowess, as they commented:

In addition to Jessica Capshaw, Alex Landi will also return as Nico Kim, the on-off boyfriend of Jake Borelli’s Levi Schmitt. It was also announced that Natalie Morales will join the Grey’s Anatomy universe as a guest star portraying pediatric surgeon Monica Beltran. Freddy Miyares, meanwhile, will have a recurring role in Season 20 as Dorian, a likable patient who is involved in a serious accident.

Ellen Pompeo will also be back when Season 20 kicks off, despite stepping away as a series regular last season. Debbie Allen, who executive produces Grey’s Anatomy with Pompeo, confirmed that not only will Meredith Grey be back in Seattle in the season premiere, but she will appear in four of the 10 episodes. 

I can’t wait to see what awaits Arizona back in Seattle when Grey’s Anatomy resumes, and if she does it sporting full-on Barbiecore, that’s all the better. The ABC medical drama will maintain its Thursday night time slot, premiering at 9 p.m. ET March 14, and with 9-1-1 taking over the 8 p.m. ET block, Station 19 has been moved to 10 p.m. ET Thursdays for its seventh and final season. It’s been a pretty quiet fall in the TV landscape, with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes delaying the majority of the productions we’re accustomed to seeing this time of year. But now that the historic labor battle has ended, productions are getting back to work, including ABC’s longtime medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. Several of the actors portraying the Grey Sloan Memorial surgeons posted photos that proved they were back on set — with scripts and everything! — and I’ve never been more excited about a table read.

Grey’s Anatomy left a lot up in the air when Season 19 concluded back in February, including Teddy Altman’s fate (although pesky contract negotiations may have spoiled that cliffhanger) and numerous relationship statuses, but the resolutions to those stories may now exist in script form. The cast gathered for their first Season 20 table read, with Midori Francis posting a group shot to her Instagram Stories:  

Midori Francis, who plays Mika Yasuda, was one of five new main cast members brought in for Season 19’s quasi-reboot, which saw a new class of first-year interns join the show as Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey became the final member of the OG rookie class to leave the hospital. 

We don’t know yet if or how much Meredith will return for Season 20 — especially given that the show is reportedly aiming for a shortened season of 10 episodes for a possible return in early 2024 — but the first-year residents will all be back. Adelaide Kane also posted an image from the table read to Instagram: 

James Pickens Jr. and Camilla Luddington posted similar images showing what the cast was up to, and the Jo Wilson actress said the rain that was pouring down in Los Angeles was giving good Seattle vibes to the reunited staff. 

Camilla Luddington also appeared to tease her character’s upcoming storyline, posting a photo with Chris Carmack. After so much “will-they-won’t-they” between Jo and Link, a romance finally seemed to be happening, as they professed their love for each other in the Season 19 finale. 

Work on the Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 scripts began at the beginning of October, following the end of the WGA writer’s strike, and one of the stories I’m so excited to see in the upcoming episodes is Levi Schmitt experiencing more of the queer community. Actor Jake Borelli said it’s a storyline he’d been pitching for a while, and I can’t wait. Borelli seemed to be ready to go, too, as he posted to Instagram: 

Anthony Hill should also have some interesting plotlines coming, as his character Winston Ndugu and Maggie Pierce decided in the season finale not to get divorced — despite Kelly McCreary exiting Grey’s Anatomy — and try to make their marriage work long-distance. Hill shared his own photo on social media: 

We don’t have a date for Grey’s Anatomy’s Season 20 premiere yet, but series typically need 3 to 6 weeks for pre-production and prep before filming can start. With the holidays coming up, the shows that were delayed in the fall aren’t expected to resume before mid-February or early March, with comedies expected to be back quicker than dramas like Law & Order and Grey’s. 

We’ll be keeping an eye on all of the upcoming premiere dates, so go ahead and bookmark the 2024 TV schedule, which will be updated as that news gets announced. We’re here to help by giving you the best starting points from all of the best eras of the Shonda Rhimes drama.

Now, if those early days of Meredith and McDreamy, 007, and Cristina’s bad-assery are what you’re craving, by all means, hit play on Season 1’s “A Hard Day’s Night” and ride that wave through nearly two decades of episodes. However, if you’re more interested in a specific period of time — or a specific character — allow me to suggest these other episodes as good places to jump in. (I tried to keep the SPOILERS to a minimum, but reader beware if you’re new to the series.) 

The Denny Duquette Era (Season 2, Episode 13)  

We’re 19 seasons into this medical drama, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s appearance in Season 2 quite possibly still stands as the best guest-starring role the show has ever seen. Morgan played Denny Duquette, a heart patient with charisma to spare, who had an immediate and undeniable mutual attraction with Katherine Heigl’s Izzie Stevens. If you want to relive the rollercoaster of their complicated relationship, start with “Begin the Begin” in the second season. 

Meredith And Derek Get Together For Good (Season 5, Episode 19)  

Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey and Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd kicked off the series with a bang — literally — engaging in a one-night stand just hours before he was revealed to be an attending surgeon at her new job. However, it was quite a while before this on-off couple was finally fully "on." The way Derek treated Meredith in some of those earlier episodes was far from McDreamy, so if you want to skip the "Oh yeah, I'm still married," of it all and get straight to prime MerDer territory, fire the series up at Season 5’s “Elevator Love Letter.” 

The Mercy West Era (Season 6, Episode 5) 

The first time Grey’s Anatomy added a new batch of doctors came in Season 6, when Seattle Grace merged with Mercy West Medical Center amid a tough economic climate. Season 6’s “Invasion” introduced fans to Jackson Avery, April Kepner, Reed Adamson, Charles Percy, and while I won’t spoil the fates of Nora Zehetner and Robert Baker’s characters (IYKYK), fans of a certain would-be couple undoubtedly would want to start watching here, or skip a couple of seasons forward to … 

Japril: The Beginning (Season 8, Episode 21)  

When they were introduced in Season 6, nobody knew that Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) would go on to become one of the most adored couples in Grey’s Anatomy history. Season 9 saw the hospital’s veterans still reeling from the fallout of the plane crash, but amidst the chaos, the premiere introduced new doctors Jo Wilson, Stephanie Edwards, Shane Ross, Leah Murphy and Heather Brooks. Maggie And Amelia Replace Cristina (And Lexie) As Meredith’s Twisted Sisters (Season 10, Episode 23) 

Meredith finding support in her sisters — biological or otherwise — was huge for the character, so I don’t think it was any coincidence that Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) made her entrance as the love child of Meredith’s mother and Richard Webber, just one episode before Sandra Oh’s final appearance as Meredith’s “person,” Cristina Yang. Meredith also lost her sister, Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh), in Season 8, but with Caterina Scorsone becoming a series regular as Amelia Shepherd in Season 11, Meredith was back to having two sisters. Jump in at Season 10’s “Everything I Try to Do, Nothing Seems to Turn Out Right” to watch the new twisted sisters’ relationship start to grow. 

The B-Team Era: Meet Levi ‘Glasses’ Schmitt And Friends (Season 14, Episode 4)  

Another group of interns was introduced in Season 14, including Jake Borelli’s Levi Schmitt (known back then as “Glasses”) and Jaicy Elliot’s Taryn Helm. The six new characters also starred in a six-episode web spinoff called Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team, which featured cameos from the drama’s main cast. Relive this era starting with Season 14’s “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head.” 

If you’re a big Jake Borelli fan, though, go ahead and start watching at the Season 14 premiere. “Glasses” was initially supposed to be a small guest role, but they chose to keep him around as part of the incoming class. Good decision, since he remains a fan favorite today! 

The Crossover Era: Station 19 Premieres (Season 14, Episode 13)  

Later in Season 14, the Seattle universe expanded when Ben Warren (Jason George) changed careers, thus introducing fans to the firefighters of Station 19. Season 14’s “You Really Got a Hold on Me” served as a backdoor pilot for the spinoff, introducing Jaina Lee Ortiz as Andy Herrera. To this day, the cast members often show up on each other’s shows, particularly when there’s romance (or tragedy, of course) involved.  

The Reboot Era: Meredith Prepares To Leave As We Meet McDreamy’s Nephew (Season 19, Episode 1) 

As we’ve seen, it’s not uncommon for Grey’s to drop a handful of interns into the hospital every so often, but Season 19 was the first time since the MAGIC days that five new characters became the focus. Ellen Pompeo’s impending exit as a series regular necessitated a reboot of sorts, and we quickly found ourselves getting swept up in the will they/won’t they of McDreamy’s nephew, Lucas Adams (Niko Terho), and Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd), as well as the stories of Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis), Benson “Blue” Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) and Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane).

Nobody knows how many more eras Grey’s Anatomy will have before it closes the book, but the show has definitely proven capable of adapting its stories and characters to keep fans invested. Spoiler alert! This story discusses the Season 19 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, which aired May 18.

Grey’s Anatomy jam-packed a lot of drama into its two-hour Season 19 finale, including a big decision for Meredith (yes, Ellen Pompeo was back!) and several changes on the relationship front. However, the second episode ended on a huge cliffhanger, with Teddy Altman collapsing on the floor of the operating room, unresponsive as her husband Owen Hunt desperately tried to revive her. As the longtime series wrapped for a longer-than-usual hiatus, fans were left not knowing if Teddy would live or die — unless they happened to read the news regarding contract negotiations, that is.

Just hours before Ellen Pompeo made her return to Grey’s Anatomy and Kim Raver’s character received several shocks with a defibrillator, Deadline confirmed that a handful of series veterans had finalized new contracts for the ABC drama’s 20th season — including Raver. This was basically a huge spoiler, since we can pretty easily assume that with the actress signing on for the upcoming season, Teddy does not, in fact, die on the OR floor. 

Is it possible that Teddy does die and appears in Season 20 as a ghost? Sure, Grey’s Anatomy has brought plenty of characters back for posthumous cameos, but never in a main role, and I don’t see them starting that trend with Kim Raver’s character. However, we don’t know what her condition will be when she wakes up from the seemingly near-fatal toothache, so that does remain a mystery.

In addition to the Dr. Altman portrayer, it was confirmed that OG stars James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson will also be back for their 20th season on the show as Richard Webber and Miranda Bailey, respectively. Kevin McKidd will also return as Owen Hunt, Camilla Luddington will get to continue her brand new romance with Chris Carmack’s Link, and Caterina Scorsone will continue to carry on the Shepherd legacy as Amelia. The door has reportedly also been left open for Ellen Pompeo to make more guest appearances, but nothing has been confirmed.

The five new cast members introduced in Season 19’s quasi-reboot — Alexis Floyd, Niko Terho, Midori Francis, Harry Shum Jr. and Adelaide Kane — have not had their options picked up yet, but are reportedly all expected to return. This follows the exit of three big players on Grey’s Anatomy this season, as Ellen Pompeo stepped back as a series regular and Kelly McCreary left after nine seasons of playing Maggie Pierce. Thursday’s finale also served as Krista Vernoff’s final episodes as showrunner, leaving Meg Marinis in charge going forward.

While the contract negotiations seemed to confirm Teddy Altman’s fate, Kim Raver was one of the series vets who had addressed their future on the show ahead of the Season 19 finale, saying she was “trying to stay very in the moment.” Raver made her Grey’s Anatomy directorial debut this season on the episode “Training Day,” so we’ll have to see if her continued relationship with the show results in more turns behind the camera.

Knowing that Teddy will be back at Grey Sloan next season kind of takes the wind out of the sails of the season finale cliffhanger, but at least we aren’t being kept in suspense over the long summer months. The future of Grey’s Anatomy seems to be safe for now, as the medical drama has already been renewed for a 20th season, following the addition of five new interns in Season 19 to re-engage the longtime fans. However, which of our beloved Seattle surgeons will make it to next season feels increasingly up in the air, as Ellen Pompeo stepping down as a series regular was followed by showrunner Krista Vernoff announcing her own exit and Kelly McCreary’s goodbye episode(s) coming April 13. 

Several of Grey’s Anatomy’s veteran cast members — including Chandra Wilson, Kevin McKidd, and Kim Raver — have spoken candidly on this very issue, so let’s take a look at where they stand. 

Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey)  

Chandra Wilson is one of the two main actors remaining who have been there from the very beginning. Although her character Miranda has been doing important work this season, there have been threats to her safety. If Wilson has anything to say about it, however, her character isn’t going anywhere. The actress told People in early April: 

Being with the show for the length of its run has apparently always been the goal — even if nobody could have expected it to be going strong 20 seasons in.  

James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber)

The show’s first chief of surgery, Richard Webber has also been there from the jump. As the man portraying the doctor, James Pickens Jr. maintains that he’ll be around “as long as they want me.” In fact, he told ET at this year’s PaleyFest: 

It’s hard to imagine losing any of the characters who have been around for a while, so it’s especially comforting to hear that both of the remaining OGs seem to be happy right where they are. 

Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt)

Kevin McKidd may not have quite as many years under his belt as the previous two stars, but Owen Hunt joined the hospital staff way back in Season 5. In addition to playing the U.S. Army veteran, McKidd has directed a whopping 38 episodes, and he told The Wrap in March that he has no intentions of leaving: 

Owen’s situation seemed dicey for a while, almost dying when his vehicle went off a cliff and then being forced to run from the law, but the second half of Season 19 has seen him back where he belongs — Grey Sloan's chief of trauma. 

Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson) 

Camilla Luddington joined Grey’s Anatomy in Season 9, so she’s aware just how quickly things could change in regards to her role as Jo Wilson. Earlier in Season 19, however, she let everyone know that she’s all-in with the direction the show has taken this season, telling ET:  

Jo has had a fun will-they-won’t-they situation going on with her bestie Link (Chris Carmack, more on him later), so it’s not surprising that Camilla Luddington is excited to stick around and see what’s next for her character. 

Kim Raver (Teddy Altman) 

This season Kim Raver has expanded her role on Grey’s Anatomy, not just with her character being promoted to chief of surgery, but also joining Kevin McKidd and Chandra Wilson as actors who also direct. The opportunity to grow as an artist is keeping her inspired, as she told TV Insider: 

Kim Raver has been a part of the series since Season 6, but did not appear in Seasons 9-13. Adding new skills to her repertoire seems like a good way to keep things fresh, so hopefully we'll see her step behind the camera again. 

Chris Carmack (Atticus Lincoln) 

Chris Carmack has been playing “Ortho God” Link since Season 15, and as previously noted, fans have become invested in the potential romance between his character and Jo. When asked in April if he was with Grey’s Anatomy for the long haul, he told ET: 

Yes, an astute observation from Chris Carmack. The hospital will, indeed, always need an orthopedic surgeon. However, his response falls a little short of a solid confirmation regarding his future years in that position. Please, Grey’s writers, just promise me one thing: if Link isn’t meant to stick around forever, don’t let him leave Jo in the same cruel way Alex Karev did!

It’s good to hear how many of the longtime cast members remain committed to Grey’s Anatomy, but there are also plenty of actors who have remained mum on the subject. Anthony Hill’s fate as Winston Ndugu is still unknown, and that will likely be addressed in next week’s two-hour event. Debbie Allen, like Ellen Pompeo, is an executive producer on the series, but her character Catherine Fox received some worrisome news earlier this season regarding her cancer, so we also don’t know how much longer she’ll be around.

In the meantime, we’ll continue to enjoy our favorite Seattle medical care professionals for as long as we have them. Grey’s Anatomy airs at 9 p.m. ET on Thursdays on ABC. The moment we’ve all been waiting for (but also dreading) is upon us. When Grey’s Anatomy returns from its Season 19 winter hiatus, we will be saying goodbye to Meredith Grey (at least for now). Ellen Pompeo is stepping away as a series regular, with her character taking her three McKiddos and relocating to Boston. It feels like fans have been so focused on Meredith’s impending exit that we’ve barely had time to consider what happens next for the show, and now that the time has come to move forward, I have quite a few questions.

One thing’s for sure — there’s plenty to be excited about, even without Ellen Pompeo leading the way. The five cast additions have breathed fresh life into the 19-year-old series as the new class of first-year residents, invigorating longtime fans. Plus, there’s plenty still brewing with the other surgeons who remain at Grey Sloan. Let’s take a look at seven questions I hope Grey’s Anatomy answers when Season 19 resumes on February 23: 

Will Nick Follow Meredith To Boston? 

I can’t imagine this issue not getting addressed in the midseason premiere, but things were left up in the air in regards to whether or not Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) would move again to stay with Meredith. The two have been hot and cold since their apparent breakup in the Season 18 finale, and Nick was (in my opinion) justifiably annoyed that she 1) didn’t at least speak to him about Boston before deciding to move, and 2) neglected to tell him that her late husband’s nephew was a new hospital employee.

One thing we do know is that Scott Speedman’s role in Season 19 was reduced to recurring, so my money is on love persevering in Beantown.

How Will Catherine’s Cancer Be Handled? 

Speaking of Boston, we learned an interesting tidbit about Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) during Meredith's visit, as Greg Germann made a guest appearance as Tom Koracick to inform his friend and colleague that her cancer was growing. This will certainly have to come into play back in Seattle from the perspective of her husband Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), but I feel like it would hit harder as a plotline to kick off that Boston spinoff centered around Jackson Avery and April Kepner that fans have been begging for. I’m intrigued to see how it plays out. 

Who Is Luke Adams’ Mother? 

The Grey’s writers got us good in the Season 19 premiere with the reveal that one of the new interns was McDreamy’s favorite nephew. But after we got over the initial shock, we realized that while we knew Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) was Lucas Adams’ aunt (NOT his lover, as he strangely allowed his colleagues to believe), we were never told which of Amelia and Derek’s three sisters is Luke’s mom. 

Will Nancy, Liz or Kathleen make an appearance in the back half of Season 19? What will that look like if or when the mystery Shepherd sister comes face to face with "black sheep" Amelia — or Derek’s ex-wife Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh), who cheated on him, for that matter? Dammit, that could make for some great TV.

What’s In Store For Mika Yasuda, Jules Millin And Benson Kwan? 

It’s no surprise that a lot of the current season has focused on Luke (Niko Terho), with his Shepherd connections and all, and Simone Griffith (Alexis Floyd) has been heavily featured as well, as she has secrets of her own that have forged a bond between her and Luke. Will the second half of Season 19 feature more major stories for Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis), Benson "Blue" Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) and Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane)? 

We’ve been getting small peeks into their back stories and personalities, and while I don’t see how Grey’s Anatomy is going to find time for all of its characters — old and new — I am hoping we get to bond with these doctors more. 

Will Jo And Link Finally Get Together? 

As much as I want to continue to get to know the new characters, I also don’t feel like I’m willing to give up time with some old favorites. Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and Link (Chris Carmack) thankfully had gotten past the awkwardness of last season and seemed ready to finally admit that they were head-over-heels in love with each other. Enter Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), with an inspired speech about how falling in love with your best friend is the quickest way to ruin both of your lives. Why would anybody take relationship advice from Teddy anyway? Come on, JoLink, are we doing this or not? 

Will We See More Familiar Faces Return To Seattle? 

A number of Grey’s Anatomy legends have made returns to the show following their official exits. Meredith’s COVID hallucinations even gave us beyond-the-grave comebacks from Patrick Dempsey, T.R. Knight, Chyler Leigh and Eric Dane, so it seems nothing is off the table. This season we’ve already seen our previously mentioned Boston friends, as well as Kate Walsh returning in a recurring role. Will there be more? 

Justin Chambers went viral with a cryptic coffee post that had many thinking that Alex Karev may make an appearance, and wouldn’t that be an interesting showdown, after he ended his marriage to Jo via letter? Showrunner Krista Vernoff has promised some “delightful surprises” to come, so I’m trying hard not to get my hopes too high!  

Who Will Narrate The Remaining Season 19 Episodes? 

Despite Ellen Pompeo’s impending exit, the actress has said she’ll continue to do her trademark narration that opens and concludes each episode. Will Meredith’s voice remain for the entire second half of Season 19, or will we start to hear a different character transitioning into the role? Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) seems like an obvious choice to take over narration duties, but it seems like the job could just as easily fall to Simone Griffith or another of the interns. 

Meredith Grey may be Boston-bound, but there is still so much to look forward to with Season 19 set to resume. I’m pretty excited to start finding out the answers to these questions and to see what other surprises Krista Vernoff has for us in her final season as showrunner. Grey’s Anatomy celebrated Halloween in its latest episode, “Haunted,” and what was scarier than the interns doing their trauma training on real dead bodies? The fact that Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt were running around dishing relationship advice out to other doctors. Despite the fact that they seem to have rekindled their physical relationship, Teddy and Owen are in a bad place, and she may have inadvertently killed a couple that many fans have been wanting to see together, when she threw proverbial cold water on Link when he opened up about being “crazy about Jo.”

After lots of awkwardness and sitcom-esque misunderstandings between Jo and Link in Season 18, the first handful of episodes this season have seen the BFFs thriving as they live and co-parent together. The spark definitely seems to still be there between them, and it looked like Link (Chris Carmack) was ready to try to advance things again, before Teddy got to him with a whole speech about ruining each other's lives. Upon Link’s admission that he was afraid he’d blown his chances with Jo (Camilla Luddington), Teddy told him:

Wow, isn't love beautiful? While it’s true that Owen (Kevin McKidd) has often been one of Grey’s Anatomy’s worst love interests, Teddy (Kim Raver) is not allowing for the possibility that Link would not make the same mistakes that Owen did — which included breaking the law, forcing his family to go on the lam and then spending all their money on a lawyer to keep him out of jail. This speech somehow negated (in Link’s eyes, at least) all of the sweet moments he’d shared with Jo recently.

With Halloween being Link’s cancer-versary, he asked Jo to celebrate with him with dinner and a foot rub, but she couldn’t because of work. As always seems to happen, Link ended up working as well, when he was standing by Jo when a teenager jumped off of an ambulance, thinking he could fly. Link was super concerned about Jo’s injured wrist, and she thanked him for worrying about her. She then gave him a bag of “the good” Halloween candy, remarking that she’d already thrown out all of the stuff with raisins. I mean, if that’s not love …

However, due to Teddy’s big speech, Link let a perfectly good moment pass, and they agreed to meet back at home. I’m not giving up on JoLink, but it looks like Grey’s Anatomy is going to toy with us a bit longer before giving this couple an honest chance. I guess we’ll see if and how their relationship continues to unfold, when Grey’s Anatomy returns at 9 p.m. ET next Thursday, November 3, on ABC. Skylar Astin was a fun addition to Grey’s Anatomy’s cast in Season 18, but since things didn’t exactly end up working out for his character Todd and Camilla Luddington’s Jo, Astin’s days in Grey Sloan Memorial are likely over. As the medical drama continues to add to its cast ahead of Season 19, the Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist actor had some kind words for his on-screen love interest, as he shared one of his favorite things about his time on Grey’s Anatomy. 

Skylar Astin Gushes Over Working With Camilla Luddington

Grey's Anatomy is down a bunch of characters after the Season 18 finale, as the surgical residents were orphaned after the program was shut down. Add to that Webber going on sabbatical, Bailey quitting on the spot, and Teddy and Owen going on the lam, and Grey Sloan is looking at a serious staffing problem. Not all of the Season 18 departures had to do with the hospital, however. Skylar Astin’s Todd suffered a pretty cringeworthy breakup, and after having said goodbye (or see you later?) to the character, he gushed on Instagram Live about co-star Camilla Luddington being one of his favorite things about his experience. Here's how he lovingly put it:

It's a shame things didn't work out for those two characters, because the actors really did have great on-screen chemistry. When we left things, the situation between Jo and Link (Chris Carmack) seemed to be getting back to normal, so I'm sure Season 19 is going to toy with fans over whether that means they'll return to being BFFs, or if there's something more than friendly still lurking. 

Niko Terho Joins Grey's Anatomy As New Surgical Resident

The long-running ABC series has already started filling some seemingly vacated positions ahead of its 19th season. The latest addition is Niko Terho, who has been tapped as Grey’s Anatomy’s newest series regular in the role of first-year surgical resident Lucas Adams, Deadline reports. He previously starred in the Freeform movie The Thing About Harry opposite Jake Borelli, who plays Levi Schmitt on Grey’s. 

Niko Terho’s character is described as the charming black sheep of his family. Likable to a fault, he has a great mind, but doesn’t have the grades to match. He’s determined to prove himself as a surgeon, just like many in his family that have come before him, but he will have to stop relying on his people skills and put in the work.

This latest casting news follows the hiring of Alexis Floyd, who portrayed Anna Delvey’s best friend Neff Davis on Shonda Rhimes’ Inventing Anna on Netflix. On Grey’s Anatomy, she’ll play Simone Griffin, a surgical resident who has a painful and personal history with the hospital. 

I look forward to seeing what other new faces will be walking the hospital’s halls, as well as any information regarding the actors whose characters walked out of Grey Sloan at the end of last season. While Kevin McKidd was tapped as a lead for the ITV drama Six Four, and Jaicy Elliot is starring in a Hallmark movie, those roles are in addition to Grey’s, and not replacements.

When a series has been on the air for a long time, it can become a concern that the writers will run out of new things to do with the characters and start to recycle storylines. That’s apparently a huge reason Ellen Pompeo has voiced her support to end Grey’s Anatomy. But as the hit ABC medical drama wrapped its 18th season, showrunner Krista Vernoff has opened up about that exact issue, comparing the stories of Cristina Yang and Jo Wilson as an example to illustrate why that’s not an problem for their show going into Season 19.

Nobody’s certain of Grey’s Anatomy’s fate past Season 19. While Ellen Pompeo appears more than ready to leave (her character’s story about not being allowed to leave Seattle has seemed pretty meta), ABC is in no rush to lose its ratings winner. The actress has expressed concern that being on the show too long will result in them using old plotlines, but Krista Vernoff apparently doesn’t see that as a problem, and she explained to Variety how they’re able to keep things fresh:

It makes a lot of sense when you think about it like that. Grey’s Anatomy fans don’t say, “Jo and Todd are breaking up? They already did this story when Cristina and Owen split.” Hell, Jo’s breakup from Todd was even different from her breakup with Alex (and yes, we are still mad about that). Derek Shepherd getting hit by a semi was completely different from George O’Malley getting hit by a bus. Meredith and Derek had a beach wedding in the same season that Maggie and Winston got married on the beach, and there were definitely not any accusations that those were the same.

The makeups and breakups on Grey’s Anatomy are just as important as the medicine, and that’s something else Krista Vernoff cited as endless fodder for stories on the show:

It seems like Krista Vernoff has a lot left in the tank, as well as Chandra Wilson — one of three Grey’s Anatomy OGs, playing Miranda Bailey for all 18 seasons so far — who pushed back during a recent TV appearance when confronted with rumors that Season 19 would be their last. If they really can continue to bring in fresh ideas nearly two decades later, is it possible Grey's Anatomy will continue without Ellen Pompeo? Apparently it’s an idea making its way into conversations.

Let’s unpack the makeups, breakups and why the hospital lost so many doctors in the season finale.

Owen And Teddy Forced To Flee After ‘Death With Dignity’ Scandal Exposed

Owen and Teddy had their worst fears realized in the Grey’s Anatomy season finale, when the husband of a veteran showed up asking for Owen to help his wife die with dignity. Teddy put her foot down and said they weren’t breaking any more laws, prompting the husband to inform Bailey that Owen had stolen drugs from the hospital to help other terminally ill veterans end their lives.

Bailey was understandably livid, and while Owen stood by his decision, the chief told him she had to report them to the police — it was a legal issue, not a moral one. However, she accepted their resignations and said she’d give them a few hours before she contacted the authorities. The couple collected their kids from a very worried Amelia and boarded a plane to an unknown destination. 

Is that the last we’ll see of Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver? It’s unlikely, as ahead of Season 17, the actors (along with Camilla Luddington) reportedly signed three-year contracts that should keep them on the show through Season 19, but we’ll just have to wait and see. 

Catherine’s Cancer Treatment Was Successful, So She And Richard Went On Sabbatical

Catherine Fox had reason to celebrate, and it wasn’t just the fact that she got to see her granddaughter Harriet. Amelia delivered the good news that the treatment was working, and she was again merely living with cancer, not dying from it. She and Richard decided to celebrate the news by taking a sabbatical to see the Great Pyramids — interesting timing, as the hospital faced its biggest challenge yet with the shutdown of its residency program.

Bailey Quit With No Notice After The Residency Program Was Shut Down

Jamarah Blake told Bailey the working relationship between her, Richard and Meredith had become dysfunctional, after Meredith went against Richard’s orders to not perform a risky operation and Richard, in turn, refused to respect Bailey’s authority as chief. Blake tasked the chief with starting from scratch to rebuild the residency program, revoking the hospital's accreditation in the meantime. Yes, that means Levi Schmitt, Taryn Helm, Mabel Tsang, Zander Perez and the rest of the residents no longer work at Grey Sloan.

Bailey — who nearly suffered another heart attack from the events of this season and whose priorities shifted with her and Ben’s adoption of Pru Miller (RIP Dean) — said enough is enough and decided to put her own well-being first. She quit the hospital with no notice, handing Meredith the keys to her office on the way out and telling her, “You broke it, you bought it.” But wait, wasn’t Meredith moving to Minnesota?

Meredith Ascends To Chief Of Surgery: Her Birthright, Or Is She Stuck In Seattle?

With Richard and Bailey gone — and pressure from Jackson not to go to Minnesota — Meredith was left as Chief of Surgery. It practically seems like her birthright, with her family’s history there, but she really wanted to leave. Her visions of her mother’s abusive words and trying to save Derek the day he got shot indicated that her trauma will always keep her bound to Grey Sloan Memorial. 

As she sat in Bailey’s office — correction, her office — telling Nick to leave because his life was in Minnesota and her life was in Seattle, Meredith seemed to give in to the futility of it all. But in the final moments of the episode, she might have changed her mind, trying to yell for Nick to come back. Did the risk of losing him force her to push past her demons?

Relationship Roundup: Finale Makeups And Breakups

• Meredith and Nick’s status is unclear, after she tried to send him back to Minnesota following a fight over her rogue surgery. Nick suggested she may have made the wrong decisions based on her complicated feelings about leaving Seattle, and Meredith did not take kindly to that. 
• Things were looking so good for Jo and Todd, but everything changed after they slept together and he told her he loved her. Apparently she found it hard to overlook his singing after sex (it’s Skylar Astin, what do you expect?), which can’t be worse than him bringing a giant teddy bear (“It’s a sex bear.”) to her at the hospital the next day. So that’s over, but at least things are getting back to normal with Link. Will they go back to BFFs, or is there something more there?
• Amelia was reeling the whole episode over her breakup with Kai, and it turns out Kai was reeling as well. They showed up at the hospital, telling Amelia they couldn’t sleep, and the two shared a kiss. I’m interested to see where Season 19 takes this couple, because they are my favorite, but I don’t want Kai to sacrifice the life they’ve chosen.
• Last but not least, Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew did return for the Season 18 finale, and fans had to wait until the very end to see Jackson and April walk away hand-in-hand, kissing once they got in the elevator. Breathe easy, Japril fans, they are back on in Boston!

That was a whole lot of change to absorb. In the span of two hours, Grey Sloan went from being understaffed to straight-up hemorrhaging doctors, losing Owen, Teddy, Richard and Bailey, as well as all the residents. Will Meredith be forced to stay, sacrificing love? Could she even bring herself to leave if that were an option? 

We don’t know how many more seasons of Grey’s Anatomy we’ll get — or if the show will eventually continue without Meredith — but we do know that the drama will continue this fall for Season 19 on ABC! Check out our 2022 TV Schedule to see what premieres are coming up in the meantime.

Jo Wilson has not always been lucky in love on Grey’s Anatomy, particularly when it comes to how Alex Karev so callously up and left her — with nothing but a note. The surgeon have remained joyful in her career and with her daughter Luna despite it all, but things in the romance department might actually be looking up for Camilla Luddington’s character. Skylar Astin joined the Grey’s Anatomy universe as Todd Eames, who waltzed through the doors of Grey Sloan and formed an instant connection with the resident on his sister’s medical team. And fans shouldn't expect to see Jo pining for any former loves in the near future. 

There were a lot of opinions about the way Justin Chambers abruptly left the show after 15 years. Alex left to take care of his mom in Iowa, and he just never came back, with Grey’s Anatomy giving his character closure by explaining via letters left to Jo and Meredith that he'd reunited with Izzie and their children, whom he didn’t know existed. Fans were absolutely livid at the time, and now two seasons later, Camilla Luddington told People she’s ready for Jo to move forward when asked about a potential rekindling with Alex.

Grey’s Anatomy viewers are ready to witness that journey as well. After Alex left, Jo entered into a casual situation with Jackson Avery before his Season 17 exit from the show. (Hopefully nothing awkward goes down between the two of them when Jackson and April return for the Season 18 finale!) Then, in a strange Friends-like twist, Jo realized she had more-than-friendly feelings for her BFF Link. However, after they slept together, she realized how strong her feelings were for him, while he seemed to be fine with keeping things as they were, so she broke it off.

Things aren’t totally back to normal with Link yet — understandable, since she kicked him out of her apartment, and he continues to come to terms with Amelia finding a hot new romance — but Jo seems to definitely be on the mend since she’s started seeing Todd. Camilla Luddington said she likes the direction her character’s story is going, too:

In the latest episode, “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” Todd helped Jo figure out how to handle a work problem, as Bailey asked Jo to leave her new specialty to help out in general surgery again (his solution: do both). Link wasn’t thrilled to see Jo starting a new relationship, but he did seem satisfied that Todd appeared to have her best interests in mind, so we’ll have to see if there’s a third side left to this love triangle.

Is the “JoLink” experiment over already? Grey’s Anatomy had BFFs Jo and Link hooking up for literally like a second, only to rip them apart again. While the two go back and forth figuring out how they feel about each other like some kind of Friends episode, it seems like Jo may have found something else to keep her focus, and that something else is Skylar Astin. The Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist alum joined the cast of Grey’s in the most recent episode, “Put the Squeeze on Me,” and there are already sparks flying between his character Todd Eames and Jo.

Todd came into Grey-Sloan with his sister Laurie, who was pregnant and had a weak heart valve. While Laurie was keen to play matchmaker between her brother and the OB resident, Todd was doing a pretty good job winning Jo over all on his own. 

Jo and Todd bonded over a favorite TV show, their love for salt and vinegar chips, and it didn’t hurt that Jo literally saved his sister’s life after a complication during her surgery. It also didn’t hurt that Todd was very sensitive to his sister being a single mother, saying he just wanted to make things easier for her — a topic that hits pretty close to home for Jo as well, especially since Link moved out.

Camilla Luddington and Skylar Astin had great on-screen chemistry, and their characters had some pretty funny awkward banter. Todd somehow mentioned that he had a PhD in both of his short conversations with Jo, but was self-aware enough to realize what he’d done. Jo, meanwhile, asked Todd out for a drink at Joe’s, and then rambled on about how the bar, “Joe’s with an E,” was different from her name, “Jo without an E.” Smooth, guys, real smooth.

Of course when they were leaving the hospital together, Link showed up, really wanting to spend time with Jo, before he realized she had a date. Hopefully this awkward phase between them lasts as long as their romance did, and they can get back to being besties soon. 

Because of the complication during Laurie’s surgery, her procedure got pushed to another day, which means Todd will definitely be hanging out at the hospital for a little longer. Skylar Astin signed on for a recurring role in Season 18 of Grey’s Anatomy, so we already knew he’d be around, but by “around,” could that possibly mean “Jo’s apartment”? 

Skylar Astin is the second Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist actor to join the Grey’s Anatomy cast this season. Peter Gallagher has also been featured as David Hamilton, the benefactor and patient behind the Parkinson’s research that Meredith and Amelia have been doing in Minnesota. He threw his own curveball into the lives of the Seattle hospital by offering Meredith a full-time position at the Grey Center in Minnesota. Now I’m just waiting for someone to burst into song. (No, on second thought, Grey’s already did that episode, and it wasn’t great.)

It’s no secret that I was not cheering for Jo and Link to work out romantically, so I’m more than happy to see where things go with her and Todd. The wait is almost over. Just one more week until Grey’s Anatomy returns for its Season 18 spring premiere — a crossover with Station 19 where we’ll finally learn the fates of Owen Hunt and the other characters left hanging in the winter finale. While we have some ideas about what we want to see when our favorite Seattle surgeons resurface for the rest of Season 18, showrunner Krista Vernoff has uncharacteristically provided a full-on confirmation of what we can expect — or rather what we shouldn’t expect.

The winter finale left viewers with a lot of questions surrounding the love triangle Amelia Shepherd has found herself in. Amelia and Link broke up after she turned down his proposal and said she’d never want to get married, seemingly a deal-breaker for Link. Just as he changed his mind about marriage, however, Amelia was in the midst of striking up a romance with Kai Bartley, the hot new neuroscientist from Minnesota. Krista Vernoff, of course, didn’t exactly go into detail about what’s in store for this trio, but she did tell TVLine there’s one thing curious fans have asked about that no one should expect to see when Season 18 picks back up.  

I guess the "no throuple" promise goes for Jo Wilson, too, as Grey’s Anatomy keeps teasing there might be more romantic chemistry between her and longtime BFF Link than either of them ever realized. In the episode “Today Was a Fairy Tale,” Jo was caught off-guard when Link admitted he had a crush on her back when they first met, which seemed to awaken more-than-friendly feelings for Link, just as he became more convinced he wanted to reunite with Amelia.

Krista Vernoff rarely drops promises such as that one, so it must be for a good reason. While the showrunner admits it’s going to get “pretty complicated” for all of the characters involved — which should be expected for all Grey’s Anatomy love interests — viewers can expect Amelia and Link to go in one direction or the other, rather than embracing a more populated relationship, at least for now. 

Grey’s Anatomy fans won’t have to wait to see how Link reacts to seeing Amelia kissing Kai, but the longtime ABC medical drama has plenty of other business to handle when it returns for the crossover with Station 19. Owen Hunt’s life was left hanging in the balance after the vehicle he was in slid down a cliff. Teddy, meanwhile, was trying to make it back to the hospital with the donor heart to save Megan’s son Farouk’s life. And Meredith was performing surgery to save David Hamilton after he got sick right before their groundbreaking Parkinson’s surgery. All those problems make the idea of throuple-dom sound downright simple.

The crossover event begins with Station 19 at 8 p.m. ET Thursday, February 24, followed by Grey’s Anatomy at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. Be sure to check out our 2022 TV Schedule to see what other shows are premiering soon.

Spoiler alert! This story contains spoilers for the Season 18 episode of Grey’s Anatomy called “Today Was a Fairy Tale.” 

Navigating parenthood hasn’t been an easy journey for Jo Wilson, whose adoption of daughter Luna has been a story in Grey’s Anatomy’s 18th season. But having babies never is easy, which is something that Jo’s longtime BFF Link is also in the process of learning, as he now shares son Scout with for-now-ex-girlfriend Amelia. In “Today Was a Fairy Tale,” Jo and Link enjoyed a rare day off (well, it started out as a day off anyway), where they took a walk down memory lane and ended up in … 1995? 

Not really, but Link and Jo’s relationship did take a turn that felt very “Ross and Rachel” from Friends. After reminiscing about their days waiting tables at Jimmy’s Crab Shack, Link revealed that he’d had a huge crush on Jo back then, which clearly left her shook. The Friends-like twist came when Link’s admission seemed to awaken those feelings in Jo — just as Link realized how much in love he still was with Amelia. Isn’t that just kick-you-in-the-crotch-spit-on-your-neck fantastic?

The whole scene felt a lot like Friends Season 2, when Rachel realized she had feelings for Ross after Chandler accidentally revealed that Ross had been carrying a torch for her for years. When Rachel was ready to tell Ross she felt the same way, it was revealed that he had begun dating Julie on a business trip in China. And it turns out I’m not the only one who connected those dots. Camilla Luddington, who plays Jo, tweeted a reference to “The One Where Rachel Finds Out”:

Now I’ve never been super into the idea of Jo and Link as more than friends, because strong, platonic friendships between men and women are rare gems on television. But really, as long as showrunner Krista Vernoff isn’t going to drag the “will they/won’t they” along for the next nine seasons, I’ll be okay with whatever they choose.

We’ll have to wait to see how Jo’s feelings continue to develop, and if any of Link’s old feelings still remain. I don’t think that’s a situation that’s going to resolve itself before the winter finale. Next week’s episode description for “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” hints at Link fighting to get Amelia back:

The preview for the episode, however, is focused more around Owen Hunt, who appears to get into an awful car accident while en route to pick up a donor heart (seriously, organ procurement always equals disaster on this show). Take a look and see if you can pick up any clues:

“It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” doesn’t look like it will be lacking in drama, but will there even be time for relationship antics? Of course there will be, this is Grey’s Anatomy! Just when we thought Amelia and Link were dead in the water (relationship-wise), Grey’s Anatomy went and delivered a holiday episode, “Every Day Is a Holiday (With You),” where the former couple tried to salvage Thanksgiving for the kids and ended up sleeping together. But don’t get too excited, Amelink shippers. A new preview for the next episode, “Today Was a Fairy Tale,” hints that Link’s love life may be headed in a different direction.

Link came to the rescue in “Every Day Is a Holiday (With You)” when Meredith got stuck in Minnesota, leaving Amelia all alone to make Thanksgiving dinner for the Shepherd children as well as her own. (Between last season’s COVID and this season’s Minnesota, seriously, I think even Addison has spent more time with Meredith's kids than Meredith.) The turkey didn’t get cooked, but the spirits were high, and Amelia watched lovingly as Link and the kids danced it out following their macaroni and Bagel Bites feast. 

After the children were asleep, the former couple started kissing and, even when Amelia clarified to Link that she wasn't going to change her mind about marriage, they still hooked up. It seemed like a promising sign, especially since Link wasn't deterred by Amelia not having a change of heart. But the preview for the next episode makes it look like Link may not be too hung up on Amelia after all, as he gives longtime BFF Jo a smoldering look and admits to having had feelings for her at some point. Check out the preview below to judge for yourself. 

Link and Jo have always been close but in the most platonic ways. When Link was introduced to Grey Sloan Memorial in Season 15, it was established that he and Jo knew each other in college and waited tables together. They supported each other through so many life struggles, including when relationships went south, with neither ever hinting at wanting to be more than friends.

But in the past couple of seasons, their life circumstances have brought them even closer together — specifically becoming parents. Link moved in with Jo after Amelia turned down his proposal, not to mention the fact that Link fostered Jo’s daughter Luna until she could get custody. In the previous episode, which saw the death of a Station 19 firefighter, Link assured a frantic Jo that if anything ever happened to her, he’d take care of Luna. Might their friendship be taking a turn?

A little flirting between single friends never hurt anybody, sure, but to me the preview intentionally made it look like Jo was either appalled or exposed by Link’s admission that he’d had a huge crush on her — and did you see the playful smolder he gave her? Sorry, Amelia, but that’s not really the kind of thing you say to someone if you’re trying to patch up another relationship. Something tells me Amelia's going to be just fine, though. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait a long three weeks before we find out. 

Grey’s Anatomy returns to ABC on December 9, when viewers will meet the newest character on the Minnesota side of things — seriously, are they setting up a spinoff with all of these non-Seattle characters? Grey’s Anatomy is putting its characters through a lot of changes in its 18th season. Meredith and Amelia are involved in Parkinson’s research, Webber is fast-tracking his residents into solo surgeries, former regulars like Addison are back, and new characters are still being introduced. And in the midst of all the change is Jo, who is arguably going through the biggest personal transition of all, as she balances a new career path with being the single mom of 1-year-old Luna. It turns out there’s a little bit of art imitating life going on there.

Camilla Luddington gave birth to her second child last August, a son named Lucas, and she and husband Matthew Alan also share a 4-year-old daughter. So Luddington is very aware of the struggles her character is going through in Season 18 by way of being a working new mom. Such as when Jo started falling asleep on a bench outside the hospital because she was too tired to walk to her car. Luddington joked to EW that the makeup artists don’t have to try too hard to give her that “tired mom” look.

Even the babies’ names — Lucas and Luna — are similar. Man, I wonder how often Camilla Luddington says the wrong name on set or at home! 

Somehow the new job track and new baby aren’t the only changes Jo is experiencing on Grey’s Anatomy. Jo has moved into a new place — taking Jackson’s old apartment when he left Seattle for Boston — and is rocking a shorter, blonder hairstyle. Whatever it takes to keep Jo on a path moving forward from ex-husband Alex, who savagely left her to reunite with his first bride, Izzie Stevens. 

It remains to be seen, though, if Jo will get to learn the ropes of her new specialty under the queen that is Addison Forbes Montgomery (who coincidentally carved the path for Alex in the field years ago). Camilla Luddington spoke ahead of Season 18 about Jo being desperate to get on Addison’s uterine transplant case, but for now, Jo is “stuck” learning from the equally stellar Carina DeLuca-Bishop. 

Grey’s Anatomy is on a short hiatus and will return November 11 with an explosive crossover event with Station 19. The promo for the upcoming episode “Bottle Up and Explode!” shows chaos across both of the Seattle dramas as our heroes are somehow involved in multiple explosions. Not only do we have to wait a couple of weeks to find out what happens, but the show’s promo has revealed that “Not everyone will survive.” 

The crossover begins at 8 p.m. ET November 11 on ABC, with Grey’s Anatomy following at 9 p.m. ET. In the meantime, check out our 2021 Fall TV Schedule to see which shows are premiering soon!

Jo Wilson has gone through quite the transformation on Grey’s Anatomy. After Alex left her to reunite with Izzie Stevens, Jo struggled to find her place — romantically, medically and otherwise — but the end of Season 17 gave her direction in a pretty significant way. She “chose joy,” adopting a baby girl and changing her specialty to obstetrics and gynecology. So when Kate Walsh announced that she was returning to Grey-Sloan Memorial as Addison Montgomery, it was the hope among fans that Jo might end up as a protégé of the neonatal goddess. And Camilla Luddington herself makes it sounds possible that fans could get their wish.

In a recent interview with ET, Camilla Luddington talked about what it was like having Kate Walsh back on set, saying “everyone geeked out” when they saw her at the table read. It sounds like both the actress and her character are still bringing the boss energy, and Jo will be trying to soak in as much as possible from Addison. In her words:

Drama? On Grey’s Anatomy? I’d certainly hope so! Let’s not forget that way back in Season 3, Addison slept with Jo’s now-ex-husband Alex Karev. I know in a show like this, it seems like everybody sleeps with everybody at some point, but it still might be interesting if that part of their shared past comes to light, considering he's no longer around. Addison and Alex were never serious romantically, and he really learned a lot from her in a professional capacity, as it was her guidance that led him to change his specialty from plastic surgery to pediatrics. Perhaps Jo following a similar path will be meaningfully symbolic, or maybe it'll lead to something more problematic.

Jo will be going through Addison's return as a new mother — and a single mother — which certainly could prove to have its overwhelming moments. Camilla Luddington said Jo will be depending on her BFF Link as she basically starts her career from scratch.

Beloved medical drama Grey’s Anatomy has officially ended its 17th season, with plans to return next fall. But it was a tricky year, as Grey’s adopted strict health protocols and addressed COVID-19 in-universe. I recently had the privilege of speaking with Jo Wilson actress Camilla Luddington about her time at Grey Sloan Memorial, where she explained how changes to filming positively affected the cast.

Camilla Luddington is one of the longest running characters on Grey’s Anatomy’s current cast, dating back to Season 9. She was able to return to work as the show addressed the pandemic, with the cast wearing appropriate masks/face shields both on and off camera. I asked Luddington if there were was any silver lining to these new working conditions, and she responded with:

That’s certainly one way to bond with your co-workers. One of the ways that Season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy was able to resume filming was by keeping its cast in separate pods, helping to reduce exposure for actors as they returned to work. While this no doubt created challenges, it seems that it might have also helped members of the ensemble to bond.

Camilla Luddington’s words from our conversation offered glimpse behind what it was really like to bring Grey’s Anatomy to life for Season 17. It seems like a giant puzzle for the producers and writers, one that miraculously got pulled off. And in the process, Luddington was able to bond with Levi Schmidtt aka Glasses actor Jake Borelli. After all, he did move in with Jo.

When Grey’s Anatomy finally returned to our TV screens, we watched as various characters were paired off. Amelia and Link were at home with all the kids, Meredith took visits in her beach dream, and Maggie spent time with Winston. As for Camilla Luddington’s Jo, she spent much of her scenes with either Jackson or Levi.

Despite those pods, Camilla Luddington also shared with me how the Grey’s Anatomy cast leaned on each other throughout Season 17. While the characters faced unprecedented times, we were doing the same in the real world. Luddington shared what this supportive environment felt like, saying:

Another solid point. Many of us spent a great deal of time over the last year isolated in our homes. And so when Camilla Luddington and the cast of Grey’s Anatomy finally returned to set for Season 17, they were seemingly thrilled to have the connection with friendly faces. Even if that meant speaking from each other across the room or acting with face shields.

With Season 17 in the rear view and Grey’s Anatomy renewed for another, it should be interesting to see how many of these health protocols will still be kept in place. The world is opening up again with vaccinations rolling out, which might allow for group scenes and more character pairings. Regardless, fans are going to tune in to check in on the surgeons, including Camilla Luddington’s Jo Wilson.

There are long-running TV shows, and then there’s Grey’s Anatomy. The medical drama is gearing up to wrap the whopping 17th season on ABC, and it’s already been renewed for another. Actress Camilla Luddington has played Jo Wilson since back in Season 9, and her character has changed drastically between her break-up with Alex Karev and her recent change in speciality. Ahead of the season finale, Luddington told me why she loves Jo’s pivot from general surgery to OBGYN.

Grey’s Anatomy fans have followed Camilla Luddington’s character Jo from her time as an intern, watching as she became a capable general surgeon and protégée of Meredith Grey herself. But after fighting to keep people alive during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jo decided to switch to a speciality that brought her joy: OBGYN. I had the privilege of speaking to Luddington about her character’s professional twists, and she responded opened up, saying:

Well, that worked out. Camilla Luddington was a new mother when filming Season 17, which is a difficult task in itself. Luckily for the long-running Grey’s Anatomy actress, she was able to tap into her true emotions when bringing Jo’s “aha moment” to life. And now Luddington gets to work with adorable babies while working those notoriously long hours on set.

Camilla Luddington’s comments show the strange ways that life and art sometimes meet. Considering how long she’s been on Grey’s Anatomy, it might have been overdue that her interests so closely meet Jo’s. Grey Sloane Memorial Hospital is undergoing a ton of staff changes, but hopefully OBGYN should open new surgical doors for Wilson.

Later in our same conversation, Camilla Luddington went on to explain how organic her performance was in the scene where Jo unexpectedly delivered a baby. What’s more, she shared her hopes for the surgeon’s professional career, inspired by a few Grey’s Anatomy alums. As she put it,

Well, color me intrigued. While Jo’s change in speciality was a shocker for the audience and Dr. Bailey alike, it seems that Camilla Luddington was pretty thrilled. What’s more, she’s hoping her signature character follows in the footsteps of badass OBGYN/fetal surgeons like Addison and Arizona.

Grey’s Anatomy is gearing up for its Season 17 finale, so it should be interesting to see what happens next for Jo. Her story this year pivoted away from romance, despite some casual sex with Jackson Avery. Instead Jo has looked inward, and discovered what type of job is truly going to bring fulfillment.

Grey's Anatomy recently bumped two characters up to series regular status (while losing one to Station 19), but the futures of no fewer than three were still in question, as actors' contracts expired with the premature end of Season 16. Well, Season 17 may not hit the airwaves any time too soon, but three stars will officially be back when the show does return, and they won't go anywhere for quite a while. Kim Raver, Kevin McKidd, and Camilla Luddington will all return.

Kim Raver, Kevin McKidd, and Camilla Luddington play Dr. Teddy Altman, Dr. Owen Hunt, and Dr. Jo Wilson, respectively, so Meredith Grey won't be losing several of her fellow surgeons when the action picks up at Grey Sloan in Season 17. Deadline reports that the new contracts are for another three years, with considerable salary bumps for the actors.

Although Grey's Anatomy is currently halfway through its two-season renewal from back in May 2019, new three-year contracts for three of the most prominent stars indicate that ABC is planning on Grey's lasting far beyond Season 17. Considering what these characters went through in Season 16, the likelihood of all three of them not leaving the show anytime soon is somewhat surprising.

Kim Raver's Teddy ended Season 16 on a controversial note, as she slept with Tom just hours before she was supposed to marry Owen. While she did tell Tom that they couldn't be together because of Owen, she still had sex with another man on what was supposed to be her wedding day, and the hookup was recorded onto Owen's phone via voicemail.

Frankly, Grey's Anatomy went so far in tearing down Teddy's character in what turned out to be the final episode of Season 16 that I wouldn't have been shocked if she departed within the span of a few episodes. Now, Teddy apparently has the span of a few seasons to show what happens next!

As for Kevin McKidd's Owen, he called off the wedding in the Season 16 finale, although he technically only delayed it due to a surgery. He did it via his mother rather than calling Teddy directly, and he was clearly devastated by what she'd done. I can't imagine it helped that she fully intended on marrying him just hours after hooking up with Tom in the hospital where they all worked. However the situation is resolved, it apparently won't involve Owen leaving Grey's Anatomy.

As for Camilla Luddington's Jo, fans had big reasons to worry about her future on the show over the midseason hiatus after news broke that Justin Chambers had already filmed his final episode as Alex Karev.

Since Alex and Jo had been on very solid ground in their relationship before Alex headed off to Iowa to care for his mom (or so fans thought at the time), it seemed like Grey's Anatomy either had to send Jo off-screen to be with Alex, kill off Alex, or invent some far-fetched reason why Alex would leave Jo. (Grey's went for the far-fetched option that may have destroyed Alex's character.)

Fortunately, Grey's Anatomy didn't have to lose Camilla Luddington or Jo just because Justin Chambers decided to leave, and she was already moving forward by the end of Season 16. Her reaction may have seemed a bit strange, but showrunner Krista Vernoff explained why she was handling the situation the way she did.

So, even if there are still no details about when Grey's Anatomy will be able to start production on Season 17, fans can count on seeing these three again. Interestingly, ABC did give Grey's Anatomy (along with Station 19) a slot in the fall TV schedule, so the plan is presumably to get Season 17 ready to begin broadcast before the end of the year.

As we all know by now, Alex Karev did poor Jo sooooo wrong on Grey's Anatomy. And, as much as we all also know that the writers had a limited amount of time with which to decide how to write off Justin Chambers once he decided to leave in the middle of Season 16, it's clear that Alex leaving Jo so abruptly will put all kinds of strain on her. Now, actress Camilla Luddingon is saying that we need not worry that this will lead to a story lull for Jo, as what's to come for her looks to be worth some strong emotions.

Camilla Luddington posted a lovely shot of herself on Instagram sitting by the pool reading an upcoming script for Grey's Anatomy recently, and while she looked very relaxed and casually sophisticated in the shot, a comment by one of her followers led her to talk a bit about what's coming up for Jo. When one follower noted that she loves that Jo is still around and she "can't wait to see what's next for her," Luddington replied with some emojis that should get fans excited. Take a look:

Oooooh. I mean, if you're a fan of Jo (and hate what Alex did to her) you can't go wrong with two "Oh my!" emoji faces, right? Camilla Luddington also told the fan to "JUST. WAIT," and I'm gonna say that an all caps situation, combined with those emojis means that we're really in for some kind of treat. The big question now, of course, is what exactly Grey's Anatomy could have in store for Jo.

Jo and Alex had been through many ups and downs over the years, but finally managed to get married just a couple of years ago. Jo had stuck with Alex through thick and thin, even as she was struggling with many of her own issues from being put up for adoption as a baby, carted around to foster homes and eventually living in her car as a teen. Now, obviously, she's going to have to deal with the added slight of having her new-ish husband leave her for his family with Izzie, someone he hasn't been with in a decade.

I have to imagine that Jo's abandonment issues will have to have at least some small part in how things play out for her as the season goes on, but she's already dealt with so much strife in her life that it would be nice to see her be able to come out of being suddenly divorced by Alex stronger before too long. She's already had to get past dealing with her abusive first husband, so there are probably no Jo fans who really want to watch her wallow about Alex, who clearly wasn't actually worth her precious time.

I tend to not advocate for people to jump back into a relationship while trying to deal with a heartbreak, but wouldn't it be nice if, in a few weeks, Jo could drown her sorrows and / or get out some aggression in the bed of someone who's maybe not Mr. Right, but just Mr. Right Now? Maybe Link takes Jo on a road trip one weekend to help her clear her head, and she finds someone to dally with when they stop at a little dive bar. I mean, come on Grey's Anatomy writers, this basically scripts itself!

What the heck just happened? Grey's Anatomy fans were already worried for another star of the show after his posts about a career loss. But never mind that now, because that was quickly followed by the shocking announcement from original Grey's actor Justin Chambers that he would be leaving the show as Dr. Alex Karev. Except ... it sounds like he already left and ABC already aired his final episode. It's bizarre and fans are handling it about as well as you might expect.

Sure, Grey Sloan already replaced Alex Karev's job with a new doctor, but Alex was still part of the cast and working (temporarily, I thought) at PacNorth. Plus, he and Jo Wilson just got married and have talked about starting a family. Plus, he's Meredith Grey's only OG friend left from Season 1. He's her new person now that Cristina Yang is off in Europe.

So how is Grey's Anatomy going to write out Alex Karev? Is he going to get the Cristina treatment and be mentioned off screen? Will he continue at PacNorth and we just hear about him through Jo? Is he ... going to get the Derek treatment and be killed off?

It's hard to imagine they'd kill him off, especially when -- another shocker -- Justin Chambers reportedly already filmed and aired his final episode:

What?! True, Alex was missing from Grey's Anatomy Season 16's winter finale, which aired November 21. That's leading into the big Station 19 crossover that premieres January 23. But Alex was always expected back.

I seriously thought Alex and Jo were going to be the ultimate endgame couple to turn off the lights whenever Grey's Anatomy eventually ended. They are arguably the most popular couple on the show right now, unless maybe Amelia and Link have that spot. Things keep changing, it's hard to gauge.

So what happens to Jo? She can certainly exist as a character without Alex, she's strong on her own and she's had quite an arc. But they really boxed her into a corner by just starting her married life with Alex. She's recovering from her own personal tragedy, explored when meeting her birth mother last season. She and Alex were going to have kids. That's something fans had wanted for so long for Alex. Will that still happen? Will we just never see Alex as part of his kids' lives? Who would even want that?

ABC has already renewed Grey's Anatomy through Season 17 and we thought, until today, that Justin Chambers would be part of that cast. This feels abrupt, to say the least, and fans don't know what is going to happen next:

Yeah, that did not feel like a goodbye. That was not closure. That was not enough for fans who have loved Alex Karev for 16 seasons. And what about Camilla Luddington's Jo? Will they write her out without Alex? I would hate that for her, so I certainly hope not. But so much of Jo Wilson Karev's story was tied to him and their future, so it's going to be strange, however they move forward.

I do remember Ellen Pompeo being frustrated after Patrick Dempsey left and so many fans wanted Grey's Anatomy to end. She wanted to show how Meredith could go on without Derek and be single for a while. I would hope Justin Chambers and Ellen Pompeo, as a producer, both fought for the character of Jo to go on without Alex, however they explain it. Maybe she just takes care of that fire station baby and ... Alex is just understood to be helping her off-screen? Eh.

Yeah, at the moment there's just a lot of shock and a ton of questions. Justin Chambers dropped the bomb on fans on a Friday afternoon, two weeks before Grey's Anatomy returns from winter hiatus. Why now? I'm curious about that. It really does seem abrupt.

At least when Grey's Anatomy revealed April and Arizona would be written off the show, there were several episodes for fans to prepare, and they both got to say goodbye in their own ways -- leaving the door open for potential appearances down the road. Their stories were given endings, as opposed to how things were left with Alex Karev in that Season 16, Episode 8 hour on November 14. It was the big 350th milestone episode but if ABC knew that was his final episode at the time, why not say it?

Welp, this changes things for Grey's Anatomy Season 16, but the show will still continue for this season and into Season 17 and maybe beyond. Yay? The winter 2020 premiere airs Thursday, January 23 at 9 p.m. -- new time, after Station 19 -- on ABC.

Grey's Anatomy Season 16 has a Halloween episode ahead, and apparently it will be "hysterical" but also a bloody mess for Jo Wilson Karev's wedding dress. That's what ABC's first photos from the episode seem to show. Since October 31 is on a Thursday in 2019, Grey's Anatomy is celebrating with Episode 6, ""Whistlin' Past the Graveyard." Jo actress Camilla Luddington posted a preview of her makeup for the episode, along with a tease of how much fun it should be to watch:

ABC shared photos from the episode showing Jo in costume, and it really looks like she's wearing her wedding dress from the Grey's Anatomy Season 14 finale. A photo from the Season 14 Jolex wedding is shown at the top of this post. Here's one of ABC's new photos of Jo's Halloween costume:

Jo, what did you do?! She actually looks worse than Alex Karev did at the start of the season, and he looked like hell. Then again, as much as she's called Dr. Karev, Jo did tell Alex they weren't technically married. As she noted in Season 15, when she found their marriage license, it's not official unless you mail it in. Apparently that was Alex's job and he botched it. (Good thing he's not doing something important now like running an entire hospital.) Jo mentioned it again in the Season 16 premiere, saying they're not legally married so Alex has an "out" if he doesn't want to wait through her therapy.

So if that really is her wedding dress all covered in (presumably) fake blood, with Jo as a dead or vampire bride, maybe it's because she knows the wedding wasn't official so the dress doesn't have the same meaning? Guessing on that.

ABC's synopsis for the Halloween episode says Alex is hoping to impress investors at Pac-Gen North, but when he hears disturbing news about skeletons on the construction site grounds, he enlists Richard to help with distraction tactics. Also, Teddy feels the pressure to be super-mom after tasking herself with creating original Halloween costumes for Allison and Leo, while Meredith fears she won’t make it home in time for trick-or-treating with her kids. Elsewhere, Jackson -- who has a new Station 19 crossover romance I'm not too sure about -- tends to a pediatric patient who is upset she is spending her Halloween in a hospital.

The entire episode seems to be embracing the Halloween theme. Here's another costume-related photo, this time from a patient:

Oh boy. How much of that is costume, and how much might be costume-gone-wrong? I can't see Bailey having a sense of humor about any of it, considering how short her patience has been for everyone and everything. Who will she end up firing next?!

Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) has had a lot of nicknames on Grey's Anatomy -- from Dr. Evil Spawn to Dr. Doucheface -- but despite his angry frat boy reputation, we know Alex has a big heart.

Alex's childhood included a mix of aggressive behavior in foster homes and the tender caring for his mother Helen Karev (Lindsay Wagner), who has schizophrenia. He had to admit his mother into psychiatric care at one point, and that pattern later continued with Rebecca Pope/Ava (Elizabeth Reaser) in Season 4, and with his wife Jo Wilson Karev (Camilla Luddington), who voluntarily entered the psychiatric ward for treatment in the Season 15 finale.

Grey's Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff gave hope to Jo and Alex fans for the 2019-2020 Season 16. In addition to Jo getting the help she needs, Vernoff told TVLine this may be the year Alex gets to heal his own wound of having to watch the women he cares about battle mental illness:

Alex does seem to have a history of being drawn to women he can try to save, with many of those women suffering from psychological trauma. However, there are major differences in the stories of his mother Helen Karev, his wife Jo Karev, and exes like Rebecca Pope.

Alex's mom Helen Karev made a return in Grey's Anatomy Season 15, and seemed to show positive progress. She also kinda nudged Jo in the direction of having kids, which led to Jo finding her birth mother and that whole intense episode revealing Jo as the product of rape. Jo really took that personally and internalized it, but with Meredith Grey's help, Jo was ready to take the next step.

It's frustrating that Jo and Alex were sidelined so much right after their wedding in Season 14, but considering Jo's own incredibly tragic life, psychiatric treatment does make logical sense. Hopefully, as Krista Vernoff said, therapy brings Jo back to herself and Alex. Alex wants to help, but he can't just "fix" people, not like this. I wouldn't be shocked to see Jo emerge stronger from treatment, and ready for a Jolex baby -- or at least a pregnancy -- by the end of the season.

Krista Vernoff is now in charge of Grey's Anatomy storylines, but she did emphasize that the writers room for Season 16 hadn't even gathered to break the new season yet. That's why she previously wasn't sure what would happen with Jackson Avery's storyline after his disappearance in the Season 15 finale. There are plenty of places the stories can go in Season 16, but the writers are only just now getting ready to gather their thoughts to figure out what will happen across the year.

Grey's Anatomy was already renewed for at least two more seasons, including three newly promoted series regulars. Season 16 will premiere in September 2019 on ABC.

Jo was dealt a devastating blow upon learning the story behind her origins. At the end of the emotional episode, Jo did not want to open up to Alex that she is the product of sexual assault. That is a hint that the couple will find themselves in distress as Grey’s Anatomy moves forward.

The couple is not heading into the next Grey’s Anatomy episode in the best shape. Jo’s portrayer, Camilla Luddington, was asked if what happened will change things between her and Alex. Responding, Luddington told Cosmopolitan:

Will Jo and Alex be able to withstand the shaking? They have five hours left to let Jo’s discovery rock them in Season 15, as Grey’s Anatomy has only five episodes remaining in its 25-episode season. If “Jolex” are going to find peace, they don't have much time to do it.

From what Camilla Luddington is saying it is tough to surmise if Alex and Jo will have dealt with things entirely this season. Or if what Jo learned will ripple throughout the next season.

A lot of that may depend on if and when Jo shoulders her pain with her husband. At the end of the episode, Alex was unaware of everything that Jo had learned. Will she tell Alex about it? Camilla Luddington had this to say:

In the Grey’s Anatomy episode, Jo found and talked to her biological mother. Jo wanted to know why her mother had abandoned her as an infant at the fire station. Jo's mother revealed that she had been raped and that Jo’s biological father was the rapist. At first, her mother kept Jo before being overwhelmed by the circumstances and left her at the fire station.

Grey’s Anatomy left Jo still reeling from the news as the episode ended, and she sought to be alone rather than discuss or share the revelation with Alex. By the time the credits rolled, Alex and Jo had a tumultuous conversation that started out okay.

Alex asked if she wanted to go out to celebrate his last day as interim chief. Jo opted not to, citing her rough day. Alex then suggested they just talk to which Jo responded that she just wanted to go to bed. When Alex said that he would be cool with that, she said that she was tired and asked him if he could go out and celebrate with Meredith instead.

Alex was concerned and told her that she could talk to him, saying he was not going to judge her. He just wanted her to discuss what happened with him. Jo responded that she did not want to talk about it. She just wanted to go home by herself and sleep before walking away.

Alex looked bewildered. He obviously wants to be there for his wife. However, Jo wants to process things on her own. Jo and Alex have been one of Grey’s Anatomy’s most robust couplings. The pair got married in last season’s finale. Will their marriage survive Season 15’s?

Jo Wilson Karev was missing from most of Grey's Anatomy Season 15's March 21 episode. But she takes center stage next week in Episode 19, "Silent All These Years," when she finally meets her birth mother. To preview the episode, ABC shared an intense promo -- plugging it it as "one hour of astounding television" -- ending with Jo (Camilla Luddington) in tears and this on-screen warning:

In the March 28 episode, Michelle Forbes (Chicago Fire, True Blood) plays the woman Jo tracked down as her birth mother. As the promo shows, Jo goes to her door and tells the woman she thinks she might be Jo's mother. The woman is clearly shocked and says Jo can't be there. So Jo asks her to meet at a nearby diner to talk. In the promo, we see Jo ask about her birth father. That's when things get emotional, leading fans to think the sensitive subject matter surrounds how Jo was conceived.

It definitely looks like an intense, emotional episode. The promo and its "sensitive subject matter" warning got fans wondering if Jo was the product of rape, and/or incest.

It's possible the rest of the episode also plays into the sensitive subject matter, since a patient seems to spark Jo's look into her past:

Maybe all of that plays into the storyline, if it does address rape/consent. We'll see.

As Grey's Anatomy fans know, Jo -- formerly Brooke Stadler -- has had an extremely tough life. She revealed that she was abandoned by her mother at a fire station when she was two weeks old. She said she bounced around foster homes until she was 16, then she started living out of a car. And then she married the abusive Paul Stadler.

Jo is now happily newly married to Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and they've discussed having kids. She just checked her DNA to see if she'd be passing anything major down to her children. That led to the discovery of her birth mother, and the visit we'll see on Thursday, March 28. It doesn't sound like it's going to be the happiest story, but considering she was abandoned at a fire station as a baby, it would be surprising if the story wasn't tragic.

Grey's Anatomy Season 15 will have 25 episodes, continuing through midseason 2019. Episode 19, directed by Debbie Allen (Catherine Avery), airs Thursday, March 28 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Season 14 of Grey's Anatomy has been an interesting one. Showrunner Krista Vernoff returned to the series after a long hiatus, and seems to be bringing things back to basics on the long running medical drama. This has been done by finally addressing long awaited plot lines, like Owen Hunt's missing sister and Jo's abusive husband. The latter showed up at the hospital in the final moments of the midseason finale, utterly horrifying his ex in the process. But Paul (Matthew Morrison) ended up causing his own death in the most recent episode, leaving Jo finally free of his influence. So what's next for the young surgeon? Actress Camilla Luddington recently teased what's next for her character, saying:

It looks like Meredith may be getting a new "person" very soon, and will be mentoring and working alongside Jo on future episodes. So while the character was shaken by her ex's presence and eventual death, she'll be able to truly focus on medicine now that he's gone forever. Considering how her marriage to Paul held her back in the past, this is exactly what Jo needs.

Jo worked with Meredith on the project that ultimately won the title character the coveted Harper Avery. But when Meredith was publishing her findings, Jo asked not to be included. At the time, she feared publishing her name would get Paul's attention, and that he'd be able to find her. So Jo passed on the opportunity to have published work, and the project itself would have given her a serious resume boost.

In addition to her working relationship with Meredith, It should be interesting to see how Jo and Mer's personal relationship continues to develop. While Meredith originally couldn't stand the new intern, she's ultimately grown to respect her. And when Paul showed up at the hospital, Meredith advocated to Jo's safety, and made sure to keep Alex far away from the tumultuous situation.
