Be aware that this story contains spoilers for the Beef Season 2 finale, “It Will Stay This Way and You Will Obey,” so you’ve been warned.

The second season of Beef has finally arrived amid the 2026 TV schedule and, with it, comes yet another diabolical tale about messy people engaged in visceral squabbles. At the center of this season’s story are couples Josh (Oscar Isaac) and Lindsay (Carey Mulligan) & Ashley (Cailee Spaeney) and Austin (Charles Melton). This tale has a lot of twists and turns and, in the finale, there’s even a wild fight scene. CinemaBlend recently spoke to the show’s director – who also helmed Marvel’s Thunderbolts* – and he broke it down for us.

During Season 2’s final installment, Lindsay, Ashley and Austin arrive in Korea. It’s there that the powerful Chairwoman Park (Youn Yuh-jung) ultimately wants to prevent them from divulging that she’s laundering money through the Monte Vista Point Country Club, where the trio works. The three find themselves at the Trochos cosmetic clinic, where Park’s husband works, and aim to find a way out. After a chat with Park’s hubby, Dr. Kim – who wants to help turn her in – she discovers the group herself and Lindsay punches her.

This leads to a chaotic chase/fight sequence within the clinic that plays out as Austin, Lindsay and Ashley attempt to escape Park’s security. All three try to defend themselves, and the madness also culminates in Kim being killed (and the group being captured). It’s a wild scene, and I honestly wasn’t expecting Beef to deliver something like it. When I spoke with Jake Schreier – who also directed on Season 1 – about the sequence, he first shared a cool inspiration that series creator/writer Lee Sung Jin had for this part of the finale:

Action junkies can probably understand why Jin would want a fight scene reminiscent of the ones in Park Chan-wook’s acclaimed Oldboy, but making that is easier said than done. As Schreier mentioned in the video above, he enlisted the services of stunt coordinator Chris O’Hara, who worked with the main cast and with the Korean actors. O’Hara even set up a warehouse for the stars to “work through” the scene. One key principle Schreier held onto while making his Marvel movie also helped inform his approach to this fight:

Ideally, action should be driven by story, and that rings true in the much-praised Thunderbolts* and Beef, with the latter being appropriately “sloppy” due to none of the main characters being skilled fighters. They do find ways to defend themselves that don’t feel unfounded, and Schreier even highlighted the fact that Lindsay’s tendency to vomit of gross moments saved her from a knife swipe. Overall, this is a well-done sequence and, despite his experience with films, Scheier wasn’t aiming for something blockbuster-esque:

Jake Schreier is a very shrewd director, and that’s a major reason why he produces such excellent work. (It’s also one of the reasons I’m excited for the X-Men reboot he’s working on.) Of course, the fight scene is just one of the many reasons Beef Season 2 is worth watching. It’s also chock full of great performances, dark comedy and social commentary. Still, I would indeed call that fight in the clinic a major highlight.

Beef is a dramedy anthology series, and each season centers on a different group of characters who somehow come into conflict with each other. The second season specifically focuses on two couples who have a spat while working at a country club.

• Vibe: This is a dark comedy, and it’ll make viewers laugh and cringe. While it’s funny and emotional in spots, there are also depictions of physical pain.
• Required: An appreciation for dark humor and messy characters, a high tolerance for adult language (TV-MA), a Netflix subscription and time to watch all 8 episodes (each between 42-54 minutes).

The details above sum up the second season of the Emmy-winning Beef quite well, yet there may still be some who aren’t totally convinced that they should tune in for a myriad of reasons. Well, don’t fret, because I can provide some thoughts on this new title from the 2026 TV schedule. (And don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything.)

Don’t Fret If You Haven’t Season The First Season

Anthology series can definitely vary in regard to the amount of interconnectivity there is between seasons. However, those who watch Beef don’t have to worry about being confused if they choose to jump into the second season without having checked out the first. So Danny Cho and Amy Lau’s road rage incident and their subsequent feud don’t factor into this latest story. In fact, while both seasons are set in California, even series director Jake Schreier won’t confirm with certainty if the seasons are set in the same universe.

Four Feuders Equals Stickier Dynamics

Season 2 focuses on struggling country club employees Ashley Miller (Cailee Spaeny) and Austin Davis (Charles Melton) and their bosses, well-to-do but financially unstable couple Josh (Oscar Isaac) and Lindsay Martin (Carey Mulligan). The main events of the season are set in motion when Austin and Ashley witness – and record – the Martins having a volatile fight at their home and decide to use it as leverage for professional gain. What transpires is a dangerous game that even tops the drama of Amy and Danny’s dispute in some ways.

Other Members Of The Cast Shine As Do Some Famous Guest Stars

Also part of the cast is Oscar-winning Youn Yuh-jung, who plays the enigmatic Chairwoman Park, the new owner of the aforementioned country club. There’s also married couple, Troy (William Fitchner) and Ava (Mikaela Hoover), who are friends of Josh and Lindsay and have their own quirks. Seoyeon Jang and BM also play the roles of Eunice and Woosh, respectively, who are subordinates of Park. And, given the country club setting, some real-life celebrities appear throughout the season, so keep your eyes peeled for them.

This Is A Story Of The Haves And The Have Nots

While the thought-provoking first season of Beef touches on a bit of social commentary involving economics, creator Lee Sung Jin and co. present a case study that showcases the differences between social classes. Something that’s particularly interesting is the way Jin shows the nuances and social conventions that come with being part of the upper crust. No matter what kind of background viewers have, there’s a fair chance they’ll relate to at least one aspect of what any of the characters are going through.

Bottom Line

Lee Sung Jin hoped a second season of Beef would be made, though I initially had mixed feelings given the strength of the original 10 episodes. Now, after having seen these latest installments, I can honestly say I’m glad this saga of bitter arguments is still going. The writing is still solid, and the cast is impeccable while playing out the series of petty shenanigans that ensue. In short, this season is definitely worth checking out, but just make sure you’re in a calm headspace when you finally sit down to watch it.

Balls Up - April 15 (Prime Video)

Mark Wahlberg has made some insane comedies in his career, but Balls Up certainly has the most insane premise of them all. Wahlberg and Paul Walter Hauser star as marketing executives who find themselves at the World Cup as part of a condom sponsorship deal. However, the two get a bit more involved in the game than planned, leading to a country full of irate soccer fans out for blood.

Margo’s Got Money Troubles - April 15 (Apple TV)

Without question, the most star-studded addition to the streaming calendar this week is the new series Margo’s Got Money Troubles, available with an Apple TV subscription. The movie stars Elle Fanning as the daughter of a Hooters waitress (Michelle Pfeiffer) and a professional wrestler (Nick Offerman) who finds herself a single mother trying to make ends meet. It looks to be a movie that is both heartwarming and hilarious. Nicole Kidman also appears and is producing the new series from David E. Kelley.

Beef, Season 2 - April 16 (Netflix)

The first season of Beef was a runaway hit on Netflix. Now the second season has the unenviable task of matching that success. The show will tell an entirely new story with an entirely new cast of characters. Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan lead the new story as a couple who get into a massive public fight, leading to a chain reaction of wild events.

Roommates - April 17 (Netflix)

Adam Sandler has had incredible success on Netflix, and now your Netflix subscription gives you access to even more members of the Sandler family. Roommates stars Sadie Sandler, daughter of the Happy Gilmore actor, has a woman who goes away to college to find that she might have the roommate from hell... or she may have just made a new best friend.

Dust Bunny - April 17 (HBO Max)

There’s a decent chance that you missed Dust Bunny when it was in theaters, but this fantastical film reunites writer/director Bryan Fuller with his Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen as a hitman hired to kill the monster under a girl’s bed, who she believes ate her family. It’s Fuller's feature film debut in a movie full of his trademark twisted whimsy. It’s the best reason this week to have an HBO Max subscription.

American Gladiators - April 17 (Prime Video)

A staple of syndicated TV in the early 1990s, American Gladiators combined the style and flash of professional wrestling with real athletic competition and a bit of reality TV. The show was already rebooted once with Hulk Hogan as the host, and now the show launches again with a Prime Video subscription, with another WWE star, Mike “The Miz” Mizanin, hosting the show.

WrestleMania 42 - April 18 & 19 (ESPN App)

WWE programming has gone through a lot of changes over the last couple of years, so if you want to watch WrestleMania 42, you’ll need either the ESPN app or a Disney+ subscription with ESPN access.

April has been a great month for streaming content, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon, so after you’ve watched all this, come back next Monday for a new list of what’s not to miss.

Somehow it’s been nearly three years since Ali Wong and Steven Yeun teamed up for Netflix’s dark comedy, Beef. While it was a limited series from A24 when it became one of the best shows to binge on Netflix in 2023, its popularity and shower of award-season wins led creator Lee Sung Jin to make the show an anthology, and we finally know more about what to expect.

Along with Beef Season 2 just finding its way on the 2026 Netflix release calendar for this spring, Lee Sung Jin has shared his inspirations for the story. If you’ve been following what we know about Beef Season 2 closely, you may have already been clued in on the plotline. The story will follow three sets of couples, each from different generations who all have ties to an exclusive Southern California country club. Here’s what Lee told Tudum:

There will be a Gen Z couple played by Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny, who both work at the country club in lower level roles. When they overhear their boss Josh (played by Oscar Isaac) and his wife Lindsay (Carey Mulligan) getting into a heated argument, they decide to record it, and use it against them to get ahead at work. Josh and Lindsay make up the Millennial couple of Beef Season 2. Lee said this about his decision to center the show on couples of multiple generations to Vanity Fair:

When Beef Season 2 was initially casting its leads, reportedly Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway were looked at for the roles. Interestingly enough, both pairs of actors have something in common. Gyllenhaal and Hathaway were both in Brokeback Mountain and Love, and Other Drugs together. When it comes to Isaac and Mulligan, the actors also worked together a couple times before in both Inside Llewyn Davis and Drive.

The creator said he felt their “inherent backstory” makes you “believe them a little bit more.” Josh and Lindsay will play a longtime couple who are dealing with aging and their lives going differently than they expected.

The final couple to know ahead of Beef Season 2 is a wealthy Korean couple, who are taking up ownership of the country club. It’s not clear right now which actors make up the couple specifically, but we know that there’s four Korean actors in Season 2: Minari’s Youn Yuh-jung plays Chairwoman Park, Parasite’s Song Kang-ho plays Dr. Kim, Butterfly actress Seoyeon Jang has the role of Eunice, and the musician BM will play a character named Woosh.

The Korean couple is inspired by Lee’s own experience with being invited into the upper echelon of Korean society following Beef’s success. Between the show being about a younger couple blackmailing their boss to it diving into passive aggression and love, it sounds like we’re getting another great season of Beef to watch and talk about.

Some of the biggest and best actors have never won competitive acting Oscars. Some of those names might completely shock you as they have certainly put in the performances that make them worthy of winning the awards. There are a few on this list who have won honorary Oscars or won in other categories, like directing or acting, but none of these stars have been bestowed with the one they probably want the most. So here is our list of actors and actresses who have shockingly never won an Oscar for acting.

Glenn Close

At the top of the list of actors who have shockingly never won an Oscar has to be the great Glenn Close. For decades Close has been putting amazing performances on film, and yet that golden statue has eluded her. She has won multiple Tonys, Emmys, and Golden Globe awards, yet, despite an amazing eight nominations for either Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress, she's yet to win one.

Tom Cruise

There is no bigger "movie star" on the planet than Tom Cruise. While no one would realistically expect Cruise to be nominated for his action roles like in the Mission: Impossible movies (though, his stunt work in those movies should really be acknowledged), the Top Gun star has put in the work with Oscar-worthy performances in films like Rain Man, Jerry Maguire, Born on the Fourth of July, and Magnolia. He has been nominated four times, but he's yet to take home the prize.

Angela Bassett

In 1994 Angela Bassett lost out on the Best Actress Oscar for her incredible, transformative performance as Tina Turner in What's Love Got to Do with It. Not to take anything away from the winner, Holly Hunter for The Piano, but it's frankly astonishing Bassett didn't win. Sadly, though she was honored in 2024 by the Academy, she still has yet to win a competitive Oscar.

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp has gotten a lot of bad press in recent years and that may hurt his future chances to win an Academy Award, but frankly, it's amazing he hasn't already won multiple Oscars, and yet he's never won even one. Despite three nominations and many other amazing performances, the Pirates Of The Caribbean star is still Oscar-less.

Sigourney Weaver

It's hard to believe that Sigourney Weaver hasn't even been nominated for an Oscar since the 1980s, when she was nominated thrice. In spite of wonderful performances in huge hits like Avatar and Aliens, she's still searching for that golden statue.

Bradley Cooper

Honestly, you can almost smell the desperation on Bradley Cooper to win an Oscar and that's completely understandable. Cooper is one of the best actors of his generation and has been nominated five times in an acting category (and another seven times in other categories), but hasn't won...yet. He'll surely get one.

Annette Bening

Five nominations and no wins. That's Annette Bening's resume at the Oscars and that is shocking. For decades she's been crushing it on screen and despite those nominations, most recently in 2023 for her incredible performance in Nyad, a win has eluded her.

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey may have burst on the scene in wild comedies like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask - and we can argue that amazing comedic performances don't get nearly enough love from the Academy - but his more serious roles, like in Man on the Moon and even The Truman Show are certainly worthy of Oscars. Despite multiple Golden Globe nominations and wins, the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind actor has never even been nominated for an Oscar.

Amy Adams

When Amy Adams was first nominated for an Academy Award in 2005 for her breakthrough performance in Junebug, a betting person would have bet everything that she would win an Oscar in her career. Yet here we are more than 20 years later and despite five more nominations, Adams is still Oscar-less.

Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson has played every kind of character and starred in every kind of movie. From mega-franchises like Star Wars and the MCU, to more indie films like Pulp Fiction and Do The Right Thing, Jackson has done it all in Hollywood, except win a competitive Oscar and he's shockingly only been nominated once. He was honored by the Academy in 2021 for his body of work.

Scarlett Johansson

In 2020 Scarlett Johansson was nominated in both the Bet Actress category for Marriage Story and Best Supporting Actress for Jojo Rabbit. She lost out in both that year and despite an incredible career, they remain her only nominations.

Laurence Fishburne

Literally, since his breakout movie role when he was only 16 in Apocalypse Now, Laurence Fishburne has been putting in award-worthy performances. One of the most astonishing facts on this list, Fishbourne has only been nominated once, for What's Love Got to Do with It in 1994. Despite roles like Furious Styles in Boyz n The Hood, Professor Phipps in Higher Learning, and countless others, he still hasn't won.

Hugh Jackman

While he's best known for his work as Wolverine these days, the multi-talented Hugh Jackman has a ton of performances that have deserved more attention from the Academy. He's won every other award on the planet, including three of the "EGOT" awards, but he's still missing the "O."

Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams has been nominated for an Academy Award five times, starting with her breakout role in 2005's Brokeback Mountain. She has yet to break through with a win though. Certainly, she will at some point, right?

Saoirse Ronan

Saoirse Ronan was just 13 years old when she landed her first Oscar nomination for her performance in Atonement. The Lady Bird star has been nominated three subsequent times but hasn't been able to nail down an award yet. A win for Ronan at some point seems inevitable, given how she crushes every role she's in.

Matt Damon

Another one of the biggest movie stars in the world who has yet to win an acting Oscar is Matt Damon. His most recent of three acting nominations was for 2015's The Martian, and while he has won an Oscar for Best Screenplay for Good Will Hunting, an acting award has eluded him.

Salma Hayek

Despite her transcending performance in Frida, the great Salma Hayek wasn't able to win an Oscar in a stacked category in 2003 (Nicole Kidman won for The Hours). Despite numerous great performances, that remains Hayak's only nomination. For shame.

Willem Dafoe

Despite being one of the most reliable actors in Hollywood for more than four decades, somehow Willem Dafoe has yet to win an Oscar. It seems like every single role he takes on is award-worthy, and yet, despite four nominations, starting with Platoon, he still has yet to take home an Academy Award.

Carey Mulligan

2009's An Education garnered Carey Mulligan her first Oscar nom, and she's since nominated another couple of times, for Promising Young Woman in 2021 and Maestro in 2024. She's run into some stiff competition, but surely at least one of those performances was Oscar-worthy.

Mark Ruffalo

Mark Ruffalo has been acting his butt off for decades. For that hard work, he's received four Best Supporting Actor nominations, and shockingly, not for his work in Dark Waters, which might be his best performance of all. It's confounding.

Michelle Pfeiffer

The great Michelle Pfeiffer landed her first Oscar nomination in 1988 for Dangerous Liaisons and picked up two more for The Fabulous Baker Boys in 1989 and Love Field in 1992. Since then? Nothing. Zip. She has not even received a nomination as one of the best actresses of her generation. That has to be remedied, as it makes no sense.

Ralph Fiennes

Between 1996 when he was nominated for The English Patient and 2025 when he was nominated for Conclave, the great Ralph Fiennes wasn't even nominated for an Oscar despite countless award-worthy performances.

Naomi Watts

With two nominations and zero wins, Naomi Watts finds herself on this list. She was first nominated in 2004 for 21 Grams and again in 2013 for The Impossible, but she hasn't lucked out with a win yet. Surely one is in her future though, she's too much of a force not to win one.

Ryan Gosling

Year after year Ryan Gosling has put up fantastic performances, so his inclusion on this list is among the most surprising. He seems like a shoo-in to have won at least one Oscar, right? In not for Barbie or Half Nelson, both of which he was nominated for, then certainly for La La Land. Alas, he's yet to take home a trophy.

Alfre Woodard

When Alfre Woodard was nominated for her first (and to-date only) Oscar nomination way back in 1983 for Cross Creek, you'd be crazy to predict she would not get another one for what is now more than 40 years. Despite amazing performances in films like 12 Years A Slave and many others, she has been shut out.

Warren Beatty

There was no bigger movie star than Warren Beatty in the late '70s and '80s and despite a slew of hits, Beatty has never won an Oscar. Beatty has been nominated four times for Best Actor, yet his only Academy Award win came for Best Director for Reds in 1982. He didn't even win for Dick Tracy! He wasn't actually nominated for that iconic role though, which is understandable.

Laura Linney

Over her long, impressive career, Laura Linney has been nominated for many awards. She's won multiple Emmys and multiple Golden Globes, but she's never taken home a golden statue from the Academy. Linney has been nominated three times, for 2000's You Can Count on Me, 2004's Kinsey, and 2007's The Savages, but lost out each time. Linney has never been in a movie that has won Best Picture, either.

Ed Harris

Ed Harris is one of the best character actors of the last 50 years and yet he's never won an Oscar. He's been nominated three times for Best Supporting Actor, for Apollo 13, The Truman Show, and The Hours, plus picking a nomination for Best Actor for Pollock, but alas, he's never won. Weirdly, he's also 0-3 on Emmy nominations too. He has picked up two Golden Globes though.

Joan Allen

Joan Allen is an actress flies a little under the radar despite putting in amazing performances in everything she is in. It might because she's been incredibly unlucky at winning awards, despite multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG nominations. That luck includes her Oscar nominations, of which she has three, for Nixon, The Crucible, and The Contender, but sadly no wins.

Richard Gere

Despite being box office gold since the early 1980s, Richard Gere has shockingly never been even nominated for an Oscar. He's been in beloved movies that have stood the test of time like Pretty Woman, An Officer And A Gentleman, Primal Fear, Runaway Bride and so many more, but no nominations. Crazy.

Isabelle Huppert

It might not be a huge surprise that a French actress like Isabelle Huppert hasn't won an Oscar, as obviously the winners are almost always from English-language films. Still, Huppert is one of the most decorated actresses of all time in her native France, having been nominated 16 times (and winning twice) for the César Award (France's version of the Academy Awards). She was nominated for an Oscar in 2016 for Elle but lost to Emma Stone (for La La Land).

Paul Dano

It almost seems pre-ordained that at some point Paul Dano will win an Oscar. In performance after performance, he just crushes it. From There Will Be Blood to Love & Mercy, the list of his amazing performances just keeps growing. Like others on this list, the fact that he hasn't even been nominated for an Oscar is mindboggling.

Most actors don't just come out of the woodwork and immediately get awards attention, box office success and global stardom. Many start out taking bit parts in big movies or supporting character gigs opposite more successful performers. From Academy Award winners like Charlize Theron and Viola Davis to superhero stars like Tom Holland and Ben Affleck, here are 32 now-famous faces you might not remember popped up in famous movies before they were big. 

Matt Damon

In his movie debut, a very young Matt Damon can briefly be seen in 1988's Mystic Pizza as Steamer Windsor, the younger brother of Adam Storke's Charles, the clean-cut, country-club love interest of fun-loving pizzeria waitress Daisy (Julia Roberts). Steamer is present at an awkward dinner where Charles brings Daisy home to meet the family. 

Viola Davis

In the 1998 crime comedy Out of Sight, which is undoubtedly one of Steven Soderbergh's best movies, Viola Davis has a small role playing Moselle Miller, the wife of boxer Maurice "Snoopy" Miller (Don Cheadle). She would later go on to act alongside her Out of Sight co-star Jennifer Lopez in another crime flick, 2015's Lila & Eve.

Philip Seymour Hoffman

The 1992 Martin Brest melodrama Scent of a Woman memorably stars Al Pacino as a blind retired colonel and Chris O'Donnell as the prep-school student hired to watch over him, but it also features Philip Seymour Hoffman in one of his earliest performances as a fellow student named George Willis, Jr.

Carey Mulligan

The Bennet household is a bustling one in Joe Wright's 2005 adaptation of the Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice, so much so that you might have overlooked that — along with the likes of Keira Knightley, Rosamund Pike and Jena Malone — a teenaged Carey Mulligan is one of the Bennet sisters. (It's just one of many movies that prove Mulligan should be a much bigger star.) 

Elijah Wood

Long before he embarked on a quest to destroy the One Ring as Frodo in The Lord of the Rings, Elijah Wood was a successful child actor in films like The Adventures of Huck Finn, The Good Son, North and Flipper. However, before those starring roles, the pint-sized performer showed up as "Video Game Boy #2" in Back to the Future Part II.

Octavia Spencer

The 1999 Drew Barrymore comedy Never Been Kissed is jam-packed with unexpected actor appearances, from Jessica Alba to James Franco — together they play a dopey but popular high school couple — to Octavia Spencer. The latter plays a coworker of the main character Josie Geller (Barrymore) at the Chicago Sun-Times. 

Timothée Chalamet

With everything that goes on in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar — you know, that whole part about the astronauts who have to travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for humankind — viewers may have forgotten that a fresh-faced Timothée Chalamet as Tim, the teen son of Matthew McConaughey's Cooper. 

Brie Larson

Well before she received an Oscar or donned a superhero cape, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson was a tween actress who had a main role in the short-lived WB sitcom Raising Dad. One of her first big-screen gigs, however, was as a popular Six Chick in the 2004 Jennifer Garner favorite 13 Going on 30. (Don't feel too bad, Mark Ruffalo didn't remember her either.) 

Charlize Theron

If you're a fan of The Wonders, you no doubt remember band members Guy (Tom Everett Scott), Lenny (Steve Zahn), Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) and the bass player (Ethan Embry). However, you may not so readily remember that Charlize Theron is also in That Thing You Do!, as Guy's ex-girlfriend Tina, who leaves him for her dentist. 

Joe Manganiello 

Before making the ladies sweat in the Magic Mike franchise, Joe Manganiello was making Peter Parker sweat for an entirely different reason in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film series, playing the high-school bully Flash Thompson. His character dated Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane before she ended up with Spidey himself (Tobey Maguire). 

Seth Rogen

The titular teen protagonist of Donnie Darko (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) doesn't just have to deal with those disturbing visions of a rabbit-costumed man named Frank. He also has to deal with a pair of high school bullies, one of whom is played by Seth Rogen in his first ever movie appearance. 

Amy Adams

The Steven Spielberg-directed crime comedy Catch Me If You Can featured several now-well-known actresses before they were household names, including Ellen Pompeo, Elizabeth Banks and Amy Adams. The latter acted opposite Leonardo DiCaprio (played teenage con artist Frank Abagnale Jr.) as Brenda Strong, a young hospital worker who falls for Frank and his fraud. 

Keira Knightley

Given her uncanny resemblance to Natalie Portman, it's only fitting that a teenage Keira Knightley appeared as Sabé, a handmaiden and royal decoy for Portman's Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Even Knightley herself could use a reminder about who she played in the space trilogy!

Michael Fassbender

Years before memorable film roles in Inglourious Basterds, Jane Eyre, the X-Men movies and his Oscar-nominated turn in Shame, Michael Fassbender made his film debut in the 2006 action epic 300. He played the character of Stelios, a young, spirited and highly skilled Spartan soldier fighting under Gerard Butler's King Leonidas.

Sandra Oh

"Gupta? Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. The queen is coming!" It's one of the most memorable lines uttered in The Princess Diaries and it's said by none other than a pre-Grey's Anatomy Sandra Oh. Joining Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews in the beloved cast, Oh plays the humorous vice principal at Mia Thermopolis's school. 

Margot Robbie

Before her big breakout in The Wolf of Wall Street — and even longer before she painted the world pink with the phenomenon that is Barbie — rom-com fans got their first introduction to Margot in the 2013 romantic dramedy About Time. Robbie plays Charlotte, a woman that the main character Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) is crushing on before he meets his true love, Mary (played by Rachel McAdams).

Joaquin Phoenix

The 1989 Ron Howard-directed comedy Parenthood already has a stacked cast — Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Keanu Reeves, Mary Steenburgen and Dianne Wiest, to name a few — before you even remember that one of the youngins in the movie is played by a teenage Joaquin Phoenix, then going by his birth name Leaf.

Samuel L. Jackson

It's hard to remember a time when Samuel L. Jackson wasn't a major movie star, but in the 1970s and '80s, the iconic actor was racking up bit parts in big titles, including Eddie Murphy's Coming to America. In the 1988 rom-com, Jackson plays a character known as "Hold-Up Man," an armed robber who has held up the local fast-food restaurant called McDowell's five times. 

Kristen Stewart

Though she has been acting professionally since grade school, Kristen Stewart didn't become a global star until she played moody teen Bella Swan in 2008's vampire romance Twilight. But years before that, she played a memorable part in the 2002 David Fincher thriller Panic Room, appearing opposite Jodie Foster as her character's daughter. 

Dakota Johnson

\Dakota Johnson had her big Hollywood breakthrough leading a beloved book-to-film adaptation, as Anastasia Steele in the erotic Fifty Shades film series. But she actually showed up in another huge movie five years earlier: 2010's The Social Network, as a college coed who spends the night with Sean Parker, played by Justin Timberlake. 

Gabrielle Union

Before she led the Clovers to cheer competition victory in 2000's Bring It On, Gabrielle Union was given supporting roles in '90s teen favorites like 10 Things I Hate About You and She's All That. The latter was actually her film debut, in which she appeared as popular girl Katie, a member of Zack Siler's (Freddie Prinze Jr.) friend group. 

Nicolas Cage

Technically, Nicolas Cage wasn't in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But Nicolas Coppola was — when he made his feature film acting debut in the 1982 coming-of-age comedy, the actor was still going by his birth name. However, the Oscar-winning star would later change his name professionally to avoid nepotism allegations. (He is, of course, the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola and actress Talia Shire, and a cousin of director Sofia Coppola and actor Jason Schwartzman.)

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp memorably made his big-screen debut in the 1984 horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street, but movie fans might not remember that a short while later, he also appeared in Oliver Stone's war film Platoon as a young soldier fighting in the Vietnam War alongside the likes of Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, Forest Whitaker and Kevin Dillon. 

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has had a prolific acting career ever since she was a tween, starting from when she starred as the young protégée of a hitman in the 1994 action film Léon: The Professional at only twelve years old. Though that was an instantly memorable introduction to the performer, you might have forgotten that only a year later, she worked alongside screen greats like Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in the Michael Mann-directed classic, Heat. 

Tom Holland

He's most famous for spinning webs as Spider-Man but long before that, Tom Holland was making his film debut (and making audiences weep) in the 2012 disaster drama The Impossible, as a young boy desperately trying to reunite with his family following a horrific tsunami. 

Vince Vaughn

The heartwarming 1993 sports drama Rudy — about a young man (Sean Astin) who dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame — features an ironic pair of film-acting debuts. It was the first movie roles of both Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, playing teaching assistant D-Bob and tailback Jamie O'Hara, respectively. That duo would famously go on to star in the 1996 buddy comedy Swingers. 

Ryan Gosling

Another early football role for a Hollywood heavyweight, a young Ryan Gosling already had some big TV gigs under his belt (The Mickey Mouse Club, Young Hercules) before he appeared as Alan Bosley, the wiry cornerback of T. C. Williams High School's football team in Remember the Titans. And if you remember that locker-room singalong, you know the little Goose had charisma even then!

Mila Kunis

Yes, that is a mini Mila Kunis in Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves — she played a friend of Wayne Szalinski's (Rick Moranis) niece, who throws a house party once it seems like all of the grown-ups have left for the evening. (Instead, the adults have been accidentally zapped to microscopic proportions, naturally.) 

Daniel Craig

Before he was Bond, James Bond, Daniel Craig was Ballard, John Ballard, in the 1998 historical drama Elizabeth. The British actor portrayed a priest-slash-assassin who conspired with the Duke of Norfolk (Christopher Eccleston) to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I (played by Cate Blanchett) from the throne. Of course, Bond would never treat the Queen of England that way!

Jake Gyllenhaal

Given that filmmaking is a family business for Jake Gyllenhaal — he is the son of film director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner, and the younger bro of the great actress Maggie Gyllenhaal — it's not a shock that the actor started young. He made his film debut at age ten in 1991's City Slickers, playing the son of Billy Crystal's character Mitch Robbins. 

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington is best known for playing crisis management expert Olivia Pope in the ABC drama series Scandal, but more than a decade earlier, she showed off her fix-it skills as Chenille Reynolds in Save the Last Dance, helping Julia Stiles's character Sara better integrate into their South Side high school and hip-hop culture at large. 

Ben Affleck

Like his famous best friend Matt Damon, Ben Affleck also began his acting career as a child and while eagle-eyed moviegoers no doubt remember spotting him in early-'90s films like School Ties and Dazed and Confused, they may have forgotten his uncredited early cameos, such as "Basketball Player 10" in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. 

Adam Sandler has branched into some new areas in this stage of his career — his acceptance speech for the People’s Icon Award was a work of art all in itself — with Netflix being the benefactor of projects like Hustle, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and the unexpectedly brilliant Leo. The Sandman’s next offering will turn him into the Spaceman, as he portrays an astronaut who was sent to the edge of the solar system as his earthly life was falling apart. So what are critics saying about the upcoming Sandler flick?

Spaceman, which will hit theaters February 23 for a limited run before it’s available to stream with a Netflix subscription on March 1, sees Adam Sandler trying to maintain his sanity after months of isolation, befriending a giant space spider (voiced by Paul Dano) in the process. Leila Latif of GamesRadar rates the movie 4 stars out of 5, saying the comedian excels as the loneliest man in the universe. Latif writes: 

Amon Warmann of Empire also gives it 4 stars out of 5, saying come for the alien spider wisdom, stay for a restrained and heartfelt performance from Adam Sandler, who hands over the comedic reins to his presumably eight-legged friend. Warmann writes: 

Robert Daniels of RogerEbert.com rates Spaceman 3 stars out of 4, though the critic acknowledges plenty of faults. Still, Daniels loves to see Adam Sandler in this kind of dramatic role, also noting that the spider helps the movie to maintain a silly tone in an otherwise dour project. From the review: 

The strange twist on the sci-fi drama doesn’t work for everyone though. Ryan Lattanzio of IndieWire grades the movie a C, saying Adam Sandler has never been more dour than in Spaceman, and with the lack of production design, Jakub may as well have just been sitting at home feeling sorry for himself, rather than isolated in space. Lattanzio continues: 

Siddhant Adlakha of IGN similarly rates it a “Mediocre” 5 out of 10, writing that even a committed performance from the Sandman can’t save the dull space drama from devolving into a parody of itself. The critic concludes: 

Spaceman seems to have impressed some of the critics more than others, but if you’re a fan of Adam Sandler — and especially his more dramatic turns — this might be one you want to check out regardless. If you can’t catch it during its theatrical release that kicks off February 23, you’ll be able to stream it on Netflix starting March 1. Doctor Who is a British institution, and while it’s made household names of the actors who take on the mantle of The Doctor, it’s also cast many stars in guest roles. So, with that in mind, we took a journey through the iconic modern era run of the beloved BBC show, and found 32 famous actors who played a minor role in this time lord’s journey. 

Jonathan Bailey

While we know and love Jonathan Bailey as Anthony Bridgerton on one of Netflix’s best series, Bridgerton, and as Fiyero in the Wicked cast, you might not be aware that he was in Season 8 of Doctor Who in the episode “Time Heist.” He starred alongside Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor, playing the hacker Psi. 

Brett Goldstein

Brett Goldstein appeared in the Season 11 episode “The Tsuranga Conundrum '' alongside Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor. During the episode that saw The Doctor and co. stuck on a spaceship while an enemy tries to destroy it, and the Emmy-winning actor played the head nurse Astos. Then, two years later, Goldstein became a household name when he joined the Ted Lasso cast as the beloved grouchy player-turned-coach Roy Kent. 

Carey Mulligan

Before Carey Mulligan starred in movies like Drive, Promising Young Woman and Maestro, she played the young Sally Sparrow in the Season 3 episode “Blink.” Not only is this episode one with some of Doctor Who’s best quotes, but it’s also one of the most iconic stories in the show’s history as David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor took on the Weeping Angels. 

Olivia Colman 

In one of Doctor Who’s best episodes, and Matt Smith’s first as the Eleventh iteration of the time lord, Olivia Colman played “Mother,” a woman who is taken over by Patient Zero in “The Eleventh Hour.” After that, the actress, of course, went on to win an Oscar for The Favourite, and she starred in various other successful projects including the film The Lost Daughter, and the series Broadchurch and The Crown. 

James Corden

Long before James Corden was hosting The Late Late Show, he guest starred in two of Matt Smith’s episodes as his pal and flatmate Craig, most notably in the Season 5 episode “The Lodger.” 

Andrew Garfield

He may be best known as The Amazing Spider-Man and for films like The Social Network and Tick, Tick…Boom! but before all that, Andrew Garfield starred alongside David Tennant in two Doctor Who episodes, “Daleks in Manhattan” and “Evolution of the Daleks.” He played Frank, a boy who gets the Doctor to help get rid of the Daleks. 

Bill Nighy 

In one of the most moving episodes of Doctor Who, “Vincent and The Doctor,” Bill Nighy plays Dr. Black, who works at the museum where Vincent Van Gogh’s self-portrait is held. Before starring in the emotional Matt Smith-led episode all about the aforementioned painter, Nighy was best known for movies like Love, Actually and Pirates of the Caribbean. Since then, he’s been in films including About Time, Emma. and Living, which he got an Oscar nomination for. 

Daniel Kaluuya

You know Daniel Kaluuya? That’s right, the star of Jordan Peele’s movies Get Out and Nope and the man who won an Oscar for Judas and The Black Messiah. Well, before all of that, he played Barclay in Season 4 of Doctor Who in the episode “Planet of the Dead,” where he helped the Tenth Doctor fix an engine after a double-decker bus they were on got stuck in a very sandy place.  

Felicity Jones

Before she entered a galaxy far, far away in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story or received her Oscar nomination for The Theory of Everything, Felicity Jones guest starred on Doctor Who. In 2008, she played Robina Redmond opposite the Tenth Doctor in the episode “The Unicorn and the Wasp,” which was a fun take on Agatha Christie and her mysteries. 

Ian McKellen

While you don’t see Sir Ian McKellen in Doctor Who, his voice is undeniable, as he was the man behind The Great Intelligence in Matt Smith’s 2012 Christmas special  “The Snowmen.” This special appearance was just another feather in this iconic British actor’s cap in the world of genre as he’s best known for playing Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings films as well as Magneto in the X-Men movies. 

Maisie Williams

Obviously, we know Maisie Williams as Arya Stark, an integral character in the Game of Thrones cast. However, she also starred in another series that’s considered a British institution when she appeared in four of Peter Capaldi’s Season 9 Doctor Who episodes – “The Girl Who Died,” “The Woman Who Lived,” “Face the Raven'' and “Hell Bent” – as Ashildr (AKA Me) the immortal Viking. 

Michael Gambon 

In Doctor Who’s 2010 Christmas special, “A Christmas Carol,” the Eleventh Doctor finds himself with a very Scrooge-like character named Kazran Sardick, played by the late Michael Gambon. The actor also played the antagonist’s father Elliot Sardick. Of course, before this, he also starred in another tentpole fantasy franchise by playing Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter movies. 

John Hurt 

In the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, John Hurt joined Matt Smith and David Tennant as a regeneration of the time lord named the War Doctor, who lived between the eighth and ninth versions of The Doctor. He was, of course, played by the late great John Hurt, who was known for iconic films like Alien and The Elephant Man. He was a legendary British actor, and he played a pivotal role in the long-running BBC series.

Gemma Chan

From the beloved and star-studded rom-com Crazy Rich Asians to Marvel’s The Eternals, Gemma Chan’s star has grown immensely over the last few years. However, before that, she played geologist Mia Bennett in the 2009 episode “The Waters of Mars” alongside David Tennant’s Doctor. 

Michael Sheen

David Tennant plays the demon to Michael Sheen’s angel in Good Omens, but before they shared the screen together, the Aziraphale actor voiced a House on the show that made his co-star a household name. During Matt Smith’s run as The Doctor during the episode “The Doctor’s Wife,” the actor known for Frost/Nixon and Masters of Sex voiced the evil entity that lived just outside the universe. 

Richard E. Grant

With over 140 credits to his name, including Gosford Park and Hudson Hawk, Richard E. Grant is a legendary British actor. In Doctor Who he played an equally iconic role as the antagonist Dr. Simeon in the Eleventh Doctor-led Christmas special “The Snowmen.” After that, the actor who played a variant of Loki in Marvel’s most timey-wimey show, returned to Dr. Simeon for the Season 7 episode “The Name of the Doctor.” 

Jonathan Groff

As one of the first big actors to guest star in Ncuti Gatwa’s run as the Fifteenth Doctor, Jonathan Groff joined the cast for a Regency-era episode. Before making a brief appearance on Doctor Who, Groff made a name for himself on Broadway in shows including Merrily We Roll Along and Hamilton. He also voiced Kristoff in both Frozen films, and starred in David Fincher’s series Mindhunter. Talk about range. 

Stephen Fry

During the Thirteenth Doctor’s run, Stephen Fry played a role in the Season 12 episode “Spyfall" as C, the head of MI6. An iconic character actor, Fry has over 190 credits to his name, and he is best known for films like Wilde and V for Vendetta. 

Simon Pegg

Long before he was choosing to accept missions with Tom Cruise in the Mission: Impossible movies and leading Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy – which is Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End – Simon Pegg guest starred on Doctor Who. He played The Editor in Season 1 of the modern era, and went up against Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth generation of the time lord. 

Kylie Minogue

Yes, you read that right, Australian pop icon Kylie Minogue, singer of “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” and “Chiggy Wiggy,” did star in a 2007 episode of Doctor Who titled “Voyage of the Damned.” During Season 4, she was featured alongside Tennant’s Doctor as Astrid, an alien waitress. 

Helen McCrory

Helen McCrory played Rosanna in the 2010 Doctor Who episode “The Vampires of Venice.” The Peaky Blinders star joined Matt Smith’s Doctor as the leader of the Saturnyns. Along with the two iconic BBC shows, the actress also played Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies and starred in The Count of Monte Cristo. 

Toby Jones

In the episode “Amy’s Choice,” Toby Jones played the Dream Lord. This spooky villain that comes from the darker side of The Eleventh Doctor is another fun character in Jones’ cap, as he also voiced Dobby in the Harry Potter films and played Dr. Zola in the Captain America movies as well as Claudius Templesmith in The Hunger Games. 

Neil Patrick Harris

Joining the episode of the three-part 60th Anniversary special, Neil Patrick Harris played the Toymaker and witnessed the historic bi-generation. The How I Met Your Mother alum faced off against David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor as well as Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. 

Timothy Dalton

Yep, you read that right, James Bond was in Doctor Who too. Timothy Dalton – who played 007 in License to Kill and The Living Daylights – guest starred in the Tenth Doctor’s 2009 episodes “End of Time” parts one and two where he played The Narrator and Lord President Rassilon, the founder and first leader of The Doctor’s home planet, Gallifrey. 

Brian Cox

In “End of Time,” Brian Cox wasn’t seen on screen with David Tennant, however, you can hear him, because he voiced Elder Ood, who is of an alien race the Doctor works to protect. While you don’t see Cox physically in the episode, you can see him as the patriarch of the Succession cast, Logan Roy, and you can check out movies of his, including Troy and Manhunter. 

Letitia Wright

Letitia Wright’s future is as the Black Panther, but prior to playing Shuri in the MCU and starring in other fun projects, she appeared in the Season 9 episode “Face the Raven” with Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. In Doctor Who, she played Anahson, an orphan looking for her mother. 

Gugu Mbatha-Raw

While Gugu Mbatha-Raw is best known for travelling through time and space as Ravonna Renslayer in Loki, she also played Tish Jones in four episodes of Doctor Who’s fourth season alongside David Tennant. The actress who played Martha’s sister in these episodes then went on to star in many films, including Belle, and series like The Morning Show. 

Thomas Brodie-Sangster

You likely know Thomas Brodie-Sangster as the kid from Love, Actually or from his work in The Maze Runner movies and The Queen’s Gambit. However, he also starred in a pair of Doctor Who episodes in Season 3 alongside David Tennant as Tim Latimer, a schoolboy from 1913.  

Alan Cumming

The host of The Traitors and star of The Good Wife, Alan Cumming starred as King James I in the Season 11 episode “The Witchfinders.” In the episode featuring the Thirteenth Doctor, this star of stage and screen played the king of a nation that was in the midst of a witch trial when the time lord showed up. 

Iain Glen

Iain Glen played Octavian in the 2010 Doctor Who episodes titled “The Time of Angels” and “Flesh and Stone.” While the actor made a name for himself on Game of Thrones as Jorah, Daenerys’ protector, he was trying to protect his team and The Doctor from the Weeping Angels in this set of Matt Smith-led episodes. 

Anthony Head

Anthony Head played Rupert Giles in 123 episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Uther Pendragon in 43 episodes of Merlin. He also portrayed the evil headmaster Lassar in one episode of Doctor Who – “School Reunion” – back in its second season alongside David Tennant. 

Jacob Anderson 

You likely remember Jacob Anderson as Grey Worm from Game of Thrones or Louis de Pointe du Lac in the series Interview with a Vampire. In the midst of all that, he joined Season 13 of Doctor Who for a recurring role as Vinder, a pilot and guardian who watches from Observation Outpost Rose and worked with the Thirteenth Doctor across seven episodes. 

As you can see, the list of actors who have made minor appearances on Doctor Who is long and wickedly impressive. From legendary actors like Ian McKellen and Olivia Colman and modern TV staples like Jonathan Bailey and Brett Goldstein, it’s hard to believe that all these folks aided (or tried to stop) The Doctor on their wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey journey through time and space, but they all did!

If you’re remotely familiar with Doctor Who, then chances are you’re aware of what the TARDIS is, right? Well, evidently Bradley Cooper is one of the few exceptions to this rule. The actor, director and co-writer behind Maestro, one of the newest releases on the Netflix movie schedule, was unfamiliar with the machine disguised as a blue police box from early 1960s London that The Doctor uses to travel through time and space. Fortunately, he was educated on this cornerstone of British pop culture by co-star Carey Mulligan, and the video of this happening is fantastic.

For those wondering why Doctor Who was brought up during the promotion of Maestro, which can now be streamed with a Netflix subscription, that’s because Mulligan once guest-starred on the former show, playing Sally Sparrow in the episode “Blink.” When the actress mentioned in she’d been on Doctor Who “many moons ago” in an interview with Capital Official and noted she had to throw herself around the TARDIS, Cooper quickly asked what a TARDIS was, which led to the hilarious moment below:

That one question was enough to leave Mulligan, the interviewer and “everyone in the room” stunned, and it got even worse when Cooper inquired about if it’s a “monster.” He evidently was familiar with Doctor Who growing up, but he obviously he wasn’t paying enough attention since he didn’t know that the TARDIS is The Doctor’s preferred mode of transportation. Cooper initially started to look up what the TARDIS was, but Mulligan eventually came in with the save, mentioning its distinctive exterior, how it’s bigger on the inside and that it spins around while flying.

Granted, Doctor Who isn’t a property nearly on the same level as something like Star Wars or Marvel, although now that the show can be streamed with a Disney+ subscription outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland, that will hopefully help with boosting its profile. Nevertheless, I’m astounded that Bradley Cooper knew about Doctor Who and couldn’t immediately picture the TARDIS. It’s been an integral part of the show since the very beginning, and frankly, it’s probably safe to say that exterior is more associated these days for its importance to Doctor Who rather than when police boxes used to be commonplace.

But hey, better he learns late rather than never! Also, I realize Bradley Cooper is a busy man and probably doesn’t have a lot of time to stream new TV shows between his hefty work schedule and family life, but now would be a great time for him to jump onto Doctor Who if he’s interested. Following the 60th anniversary specials that delivered that big twist with David Tennant and Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctors, the Fifteenth Doctor is taking center stage, starting with the Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road,” which will see Gatwa’s incarnation of the Time Lord meeting his new companion, Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday.

While new episodes of Doctor Who are streaming on Disney+ from this point forward, if you’d like to view the first 13 seasons of the show’s modern era, those can be accessed with a Max subscription. Following “The Church on Ruby Road” arriving Christmas Day, Season 14 will on a yet-to-be-revealed date on the 2024 TV schedule.

Bradley Cooper is no stranger to prestige films, and his latest has been giving many the sense that he’ll once again be involved in some conversations come awards season. This year, he stars in and directs Maestro, which centers on the life of acclaimed composer Leonard Bernstein. The biopic, which is set to be released on Netflix later this year, has earned a considerable amount of buzz and, based on the trailer, Cooper is coming for all the Oscars. Of course, no one had actually laid eyes on the full movie at that point. Now, however, critics have screened the A-lister’s latest endeavor, and they have some passionate thoughts about it. 

When it comes to this particular production, there’s certainly a level of pressure for the lead. Not only does he have to embody the spirit of one of the music world’s most renowned artists, but this film also marks his first directorial effort since the Oscar-winning A Star is Born. It would seem, however, that the actor-director has more than risen to the challenge, as pundits who saw Maestro at the Venice Film Festival this weekend were enthralled by it. The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney commended the film for telling a more nuanced account of the musician’s life than one might expect: 

While aspects of Leonard Bernstein’s career are covered in the movie, the crux of it is his complex relationship with his wife of 27 years, Felicia Montealegre. Playing that role is the Academy Award nominated Carey Mulligan, and she apparently does so to great effect. Many would probably say that on the surface, this is a vehicle for Bradley Cooper. However, if you ask Ryan Lattanzino of IndieWire, he’d likely tell you that this movie – which he mostly enjoyed – belongs to Mulligan: 

The director’s work in front of and behind is being lauded as well. When it comes to the former, much has been said about his decision to wear a prosthetic nose while playing Leonard Bernstein. Some accused him of participating in “Jew Face,” though Jewish organizations and Bernstein’s own kids have defended him. Stephanie Zacharek provided a layered take on the backlash in her own glowing review for Time: 

While many have seemingly been taken with Maestro, not everyone is totally impressed with it. Vanity Fair’s Richard Lawson praised the performances of the two lead actors and made note of the film’s commitment to directly tackling Leonard Bernstein’s queerness. Nevertheless, Lawson, believes the film becomes uneven as it attempts to balance various facets of Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre’s lives:

Of course, this is also a movie about music, and it sounds like it certainly succeeds in delivering on that front. Deadline journalist Peter Hammond, who praised the film as a whole, had nothing but kind words for the way in which the decorated composer’s work is utilized: 

So it would seem that Bradley Cooper has another cinematic hit on his hands, based on these reviews. If this is all any indication, then it’s very possible he and Carey Mulligan will be competing for some major awards over the next several months. Regardless of what happens there though, it would simply appear that Cooper’s filmmaking abilities are growing, and that’s an exciting prospect for anyone who’s enjoyed his work or simply loves movies.

Maestro will have a limited theatrical release on November 22 as part of the schedule of 2023 new movie releases and will be streamable with a Netflix subscription starting on December 20.

Awards shows are always events worthy of note, but sometimes they make the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The 2017 Oscars was notable for the now infamous moment where La La Land was announced as Best Picture by mistake, and last night at the BAFTAs there was similar confusion over the Brest Supporting Actress award when Carey Mulligan was announced as the winner despite Kerry Condon winning the award.

According to EW, the issue here was not an envelope mix-up, as had been the case at the Oscars. Instead, it was essentially a translation error. Troy Kotsur, who won the Best Supporting Actor award at the BAFTAs last year, announced Kerry Condon as the winner. However, the sign language interpreter who was doing the vocal announcing gave Carey Mulligan’s name by mistake. 

The error was realized and corrected instantly, so Mulligan apparently never got out of her seat, and the flub was even corrected during the tape-delayed broadcast of the show, so many had no idea that the mistake had even been made. One assumes the fact that two of the nominees have different spellings of the same first name is what led to the confusion. 

One has to assume there’s a bit of extra disappointment that comes with not winning the award when there was a second there that you thought you had won. At the same time, Mulligan already has a BAFTA from her performance in 2010's An Education, so at least she has that going for her. 

Things were much more chaotic back in 2017 when Warren Beaty famously announced La La Land as the Best Picture winner. He’d apparently been handed the wrong envelope, a duplicate copy of the Best Actress award, and on the spot, he read the movie associated with Emma Stone’s award. It wasn’t until all the “winners” were up on the stage that the situation had been figured out, and the award was properly presented to the producers of Moonlight.

This error was a simple case of misspeaking, which can happen to anybody. It’s not the sort of thing that can really be avoided through any new show procedure, but considering how many decades these awards shows have been going and how complex it can be to keep the winners secure until the moment they are announced to the audience, it’s honestly a testament to these shows that we don’t see more errors like this. 

This accident will likely not live in infamy in quite the same way that the Best Picture announcement at the Oscars still does. There’s a decent chance there will be at least one reference to it at the awards show this year.  In both that case and this one, however, the correct winner was ultimately recognized, and that’s what matters. 

By now we’ve all heard of the #MeToo movement and former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein’s long history of sexual abuse. What you may not know, however, is exactly how Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey of the New York Times worked with dozens of Weinstein’s victims to help them break the story and change the landscape for women in the film industry. She Said is that story, starring Carey Mulligan as Twohey and Zoe Kazan as Kantor. The reviews are in to help you decide if you think this is a movie you should see in theaters.

She Said is a biographical drama, based on the book She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite A Movement. With Maria Schrader as its director, the movie is already garnering 2023 Oscar buzz. Let’s see what the critics are saying, starting with CinemaBlend’s review of She Said. Our own Sarah El-Mahmoud rates the movie 3.5 stars out of 5, saying the movie not only humanizes a historical moment, but delicately enlightens the public about what it took for the journalists to expose the truth. In her words:  

Valerie Complex of Deadline praises the leading actors, calling Carey Mulligan strong and confident in the role — not surprising, given her history of defending women in the media — and Zoe Kazan is the heart of the movie with an emotionally-charged performance. Complex says: 

Brittany Witherspoon of ScreenRant rates it a “Very Good” 3.5 out of 5 stars, noting that the movie is an adequate retelling of an important news event, but it runs too long and sometimes feels like Hollywood is patting itself on the back, despite the knowledge that some abusers still exist in the industry unscathed. The critic writes: 

Zoë Rose Bryant of We Live Entertainment gives She Said a user rating of 9, calling it a tribute to the women who took down Harvey Weinstein. The critic shoots down the idea that it’s too soon to have a full picture of the effect of the investigation and the notion that we’ve already dissected this story from every angle. She says: 

Steph Green of We Love Cinema rates it 4 stars out of 5. The critic is impressed at this story of journalistic integrity and female solidarity, and while there’s inarguably still work to be done, this story of triumph is one to be celebrated: 

Many critics took note not just of the importance of the work that Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey did in their dogged pursuit of the story, but how She Said also shows the journalists as working mothers, wives and women who sacrificed a lot to patiently work through tons of red tape in order to effect change. Among many of the 21st century's Hollywood scandals, it’s hard to top the shockwaves sent following the revelation that big-time producer Harvey Weinstein inflicted sexual abuse and violence toward numerous women, according to investigative reporting by The New York Times in late 2017. The world has followed the story as more than 80 women eventually came forward with claims leading the co-founder of Miramax to be fired from his company, found guilty of his crimes and sentenced to 23 years of imprisonment. The breaking of that story led to a global trend of more and more people coming forward to talk about sexual misconduct in the workplace, and by powerful men, giving viral momentum to the #MeToo movement. But, what happened in the moments before The New York Times story was published? 

Maria Schrader’s She Said takes audiences in between the bylines of The New York Times’ Harvey Weinstein reporting to showcase exactly how the newspaper uncovered his behavior. Based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, the movie follows their experiences in exposing Weinstein’s history of abuse and sexual misconduct against women. She Said not only humanizes a historical moment, but delicately enlightens the public about what it takes for for the journalists behind it to unveil an important truth. 

She Said is focused on the NYT journalists who broke the Harvey Weinstein scandal, and it works. 

Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan respectively star as Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, and they provide especially excellent performances of real women who persevered as they got past a wall of silent survivors. The actresses elevate a careful script, which gives both Twohey and Kantor’s stories a place to breath outside their professions. It really embrace them as the actual people that they are: working mothers, wives and investigative journalists who sacrificed a lot of their time and patience to break a story that was not easy to crack. Mulligan brings a concise and composed air to Twohey, whereas Kazan’s Kantor is bellowing with a warmth of emotion as she somewhat nervously takes on the towering figure of Weinstein’s reputation. With them as leads, there’s no malice about the telling of this story. 

She Said is thorough about taking audiences into the process of all the steps these journalists needed to take in order to prove in writing of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and get the various survivors on record with the thousands of rows of red tape between them to stop the story from seeing the light of day. Through the lens of these investigative journalists, a solemn topic is made into an engaging thriller and inspiring biopic that certainly makes it worthy to revisit this recent event in history. Now, much of She Said is a series of back and forth calls and messages, lunch and dinner meetings. Considering the minutiae of telling this story, its filmmakers do a rather good job of adapting it to screen, but it can certainly quite lean heavily into the procedural side of it all.

She Said is respectful in its approach to discussing its story about sexual misconduct. 

The heart of She Said is a lot of pent-up trauma from women who experienced something horrible at the hands of Harvey Weinstein. This movie does a terrific job of not having its audience gruel over too much of the content in the underbelly. It has a good balance of exposing the right details of Harvey Weinstein’s scandal without getting too intimate with the wrong, and potentially triggering, ones. Again, because the story does focus so much on the perspective of its journalists, it successfully maintains an approach just outside the center of the deep wounds, while another film on this topic may have poked too far into the agony of it all. 

Throughout the film, as Twohey and Kantor find more people to talk to inside of the skeletons in Weinstein’s closet, there are a series of short sequences that do give point of view to survivors in an empathetic way. By carefully weaving in many of their stories along the way, She Said really gives a voice to why it was difficult for many women to go on the record and brings context to why this story was so groundbreaking to finally crack after so many years without consequence. 

Maria Schrader’s drama is informative above all else. 

Just as the New York Times article served as a public service of Harvey Weinstein’s crimes, She Said works in tandem with it to tell the story behind the story. This is a movie that seeks to give the public more information about the scandal that is much more riveting than reading article after article about it. For generations to come, audiences can return to this film to understand how this moment in the #MeToo movement happened. It reminds one a lot of 2016 Best Picture winner Spotlight in its tone and storytelling. 

She Said is a respectful and tender approach to the Harvey Weinstein story. Its achievement is a direct one, as you’ll come away with more context and a greater understanding of the viral dawn of #MeToo.

As far as ratings go, at least those handed out by the Motion Picture Association, there is nothing more extreme these days than NC-17. That means no one under the age of 18 can be admitted to a movie with this rating for a multitude of reasons.

Some directors, producers, and studios will re-cut their films to get an R-rating, but there are plenty of NC-17 movies that have been left unedited and sent out into the wild as is, which has resulted in limited releases of some of the most notorious movies of all time. Henry & June (1990) - Fred Ward, Uma Thurman

What better way to start than with the very first movie to earn the NC-17 rating – according to SlashFilm – Henry & June. Director Philip Kaufman’s adaptation of Anaïs Nin’s memoir focuses on a love triangle between novelist Henry Miller (Fred Ward), his wife, June (Uma Thurman), and the French-American author (portrayed by Thurman’s future fellow Pulp Fiction cast member, Maria de Medeiros) in 1930s Paris. Despite its controversially explicit sexual content, the drama was a mild critical and commercial success and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.

Killer Joe (2012) - Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple

Directed by the late William Friedkin and written by 2019’s Little Women cast member Tracy Letts (also based on his stage play), Killer Joe stars Emile Hirsch as an indebted young man who hatches a plan to have his mother (played by Gina Gershon) killed to collect insurance money. Matthew McConaughey gives one of his most underrated performances as the titular hitman he hires, whose fee is so high that he agrees to let his teenage sister (Juno Temple) be treated as collateral.

According to Deadline, the shamelessly twisted crime thriller was released with an NC-17 rating after Friedkin and distributor LD Entertainment opted not to change its ending. While an R-rated version of the film was later made available for home viewing, those interested in seeing it in its original form could also seek out the unrated director’s cut of Killer Joe instead.

Mysterious Skin (2004) - Joseph Gordon-Levitt

One of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s best movies from earlier in his career is Mysterious Skin, in which he plays a gay teen making a living as a sex worker who recalls a disturbing encounter from his childhood through narration. Meanwhile, another teen, played by Brady Corbet, struggles to figure out the truth behind a blackout he suffered when he was younger, leading the two men to cross paths unexpectedly.

Writer and director Gregg Araki is notorious for including pervasive sexual content in his films, but the NC-17 rating for Mysterious Skin – also starring Elisabeth Shue and Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast member Michelle Trachtenberg – was largely determined by its graphic depiction of pedophilia. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the challenging subject matter sparked controversy when the Australian Family Association feared child predators could use the film as a grooming tool or for their own gratification.

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1989) - Antonio Banderas

In one of his many racy collaborations with writer and director Pedro Almodóvar, Antonio Banderas stars in Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! as Ricky, who is released from a mental hospital with the intent of finding love. So, he tracks down a former adult film star, played by Victoria Abril, whom he once shared an intimate encounter with and takes her prisoner in hopes he can convince her to be his wife.

According to Gwyne Edwards’ 2001 book Almodóvar: Labyrinths of Passion, the controversial subject matter of Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! was instrumental in the creation of the NC-17 rating itself. Thus, the MPA branded it as such in 1990 for a “scene of strong adult sensuality with nudity,” according to FilmRatings.com.

Blonde (2022) - Ana de Armas

Based on the book by Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde is director Andrew Dominik’s in-depth and fictionalized look at the tragically short life of Norma Jeane Baker, better known as Marilyn Monroe. Ana de Armas disappears into the role of one of Hollywood’s most iconic figures, portraying a side of the actress and model that was long kept hidden from the public.

Dominik once said that he anticipated his nearly three-hour biopic would be rated NC-17 before the MPA made it official in June 2022, citing “some sexual content” as the reasoning. The film’s more hardcore scenes would inspire some strong reactions from both critics and audiences since it was made available to stream in 2022.

Crash (1996) - James Spader, Holly Hunter

Not to be confused with director Paul Haggis’ Best Picture Oscar winner from 2005, Crash is one of the more bizarre and inventive movies directed by David Cronenberg (which is really saying something). Based on the novel by J.G. Ballard, it stars James Spader as a TV producer who becomes seduced into an unusual and dangerous obsession with car wrecks and the intense, sexually stimulating effect they seem to have on him and others, including his mistress (played by Holly Hunter).

Just from learning the plot, it seems pretty clear why a movie like Crash would have been given the NC-17 rating and why it inspired controversy so pervasive that it was chronicled in a 2001 book called The Crash Controversy: Censorship Campaigns and Film Reception. Nonetheless, it was still relatively well-received by critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes, and earned Cronenberg a Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, despite vehement opposition from the jury’s then-president, Francis Ford Coppola.

Descent (2007) - Rosario Dawson

Not to be confused with the Scottish 2005 horror movie THE Descent, this film sees Rosario Dawson giving her most provocative and extreme performance since she broke out in another controversial classic, Kids. This time, she plays a woman who undergoes a dramatic and violent change of character after she is assaulted by a man she meets at a fraternity party.

This brutal and upsetting revenge drama was actually released with two alternative cuts: one rated NC-17 and an R-rated edit that omits seven minutes of footage. Still, both versions contain brutal rape, language, some sexual content and drug use.

Showgirls (1995) - Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle MacLachlan

Perhaps the most infamous movie on this list, Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 erotic cult classic, Showgirls, stars a post-Save by the Bell Elizabeth Berkley as a young drifter named Nomi Malone. As she hitchhikes to Las Vegas with dreams of becoming a famous dancer on the Strip, she has some ups and downs on her journey, but finally makes her dreams come true, at a price…

According to the MPA, Showgirls was given its NC-17 rating due to the amount of nudity and erotic sexuality throughout the movie, as well as graphic language and sexual violence. If you’ve seen the movie (and not the VH1 version with digitized bras), you’re well aware of the film’s graphic nature.

Shame (2011) - Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan

Released in 2011, Steve McQueen’s psychological drama, Shame, stars Michael Fassbender as Brandon Sullivan – a successful and dashing executive who is secretly a traumatized sex addict who will do anything and everything to get his kicks in New York City. Just when he thinks life can’t get any worse, his equally damaged sister (Carey Mulligan) storms into his life, causing more complications.

Upon release, Shame was given an NC-17 rating by the MPA for explicit sexual content as well as some truly troubling scenes. I’ve walked out of several movies before, but this was the first I exited simply because what was happening on the screen was way too real and unnerving to finish.

Blue Is The Warmest Color (2013) - Léa Seydoux 

Abdellatif Kechiche’s 2013 French drama, Blue is the Warmest Color, stars Adèle Exarchopoulos as a high school student who experiences a sexual awakening after meeting an art school student and aspiring painter named Emma, played by James Bond movies actor, Léa Seydoux. Over the years, the two form a contentious and highly-emotional relationship that opens their eyes to a whole new world around them.

Though tamer than some of the other titles on this list, Blue is the Warmest Color was given an NC-17 rating because of the explicit sexual content the MPA felt was unsuitable for younger audiences. However, at least one theater allowed teens to watch the movie upon release.

Bad Lieutenant (1992) - Harvey Keitel

Abel Ferrara’s 1992 crime thriller Bad Lieutenant follows Harvey Keitel as a broken NYPD detective whose stress over his job, life, and gambling habits get the best of him. From one interaction to the next, the unnamed lieutenant falls deeper down the rabbit hole of depravity, committing some irredeemable crimes of his own along the way.

If there has ever been a movie deserving of an NC-17 rating it would have to be Bad Lieutenant. With an abundance of sexual violence, intense sexual situations, endless drug use, and extreme language throughout, it’s no wonder the MPA came down hard on the movie, which later inspired a sequel only in name, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Werner Herzog.

Orgazmo (1997) - Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Co-writer and director Trey Parker plays a normal Mormon missionary trying to find enough money to support and marry his longtime girlfriend. But when he stumbles upon a porn set, the once strait-laced and deeply devoted young man becomes the biggest thing going in the adult entertainment industry in Orgazmo.

It should come as no surprise that a movie written by the creators of South Park, and one centered on the porn industry, would receive an NC-17 rating from the MPA in 1998. It should come as even less of a surprise that the rating was handed down due to the sexual content and dialogue featured throughout.

Bent (1997) - Clive Owen, Ian McKellen

After being discovered and arrested by the Gestapo in Nazi Germany, Max – a proud gay man played by Clive Owen – is sent on a perilous journey to the Dachau concentration camp where he is subjected to indescribable horrors while still being able to find love.

Possibly one of the most harrowing movies about the Holocaust, Sean Mathias’ 1997 drama Bent is absolutely heartbreaking and disturbing with its graphic displays of violence. Upon its release, the movie received an NC-17 rating from the MPA due to its graphic sexual nature.

Matador (1986) - Antonio Banderas

In one of his most disturbing roles, Antonio Banderas plays Angel, a young student who confesses to an attempted rape and a series of murders he may or may not have committed, in Pedro Almodóvar’s 1986 dark comedy, Matador.

Just like some of the other movies featuring the director and actor, Matador pushed the limits with its dark, twisted, and oddly humorous story. Still, the MPA would later give the film an NC-17 rating in 2005 (nearly 20 years after initial release) due to “aberrant sexuality” and violence.

The Dreamers (2003) - Eva Green, Michael Pitt

In the midst of the 1968 Student Riots in Paris, an American student named Matthew (played by Michael Pitt) finds himself getting caught up in the lives of formerly conjoined twins – Louis Garrel as Théo and Eva Green as Isabelle – whose relationship is far from normal. When asked to spend a month with the siblings, Matthew falls deeper into their wild and free-flowing lifestyle.

Bernardo Bertolucci’s 2003 erotic drama, The Dreamers, pushes several boundaries and deviates from societal norms to tell a story about young love in the midst of a chaotic time. With the extreme sexual content and nudity, it’s no surprise the MPA gave the movie an NC-17 rating upon release.

A Dirty Shame (2004) - Selma Blair, Johnny Knoxville

A John Waters movie receiving an NC-17 rating? You don’t say! The filthy filmmaker’s 2004 comedy, A Dirty Shame, follows Tracey Ullman as Sylvia Stickles– a puritanical resident of the Hatford Road area of Baltimore who experiences a sexual awakening after being hit by a car. 

Selma Blair, Johnny Knoxville, and Chris Isaak also star in A Dirty Shame, which (no shocker here) was given the NC-17 rating by the MPA due to its pervasive sexual content. And if you’ve seen the movie, you are all too aware of just how pervasive and graphic it is.

Pink Flamingos (1972) - Divine

When Connie (Mink Stole) and Raymond Marble (David Lochary) attempt to steal Babs Johnson’s (Divine) title of “the filthiest person alive,” the down and dirty criminal and her family make it their mission in life to prevent the newcomers from accomplishing their mission by any means necessary.

With scenes featuring incest, people eating dog poop, flashers, and an infamously notorious scene involving a chicken, it shouldn’t shock anyone that John Waters’ classic exploitation comedy film, Pink Flamingos, was given an NC-17 rating by the MPA upon re-release in 1997, 25 years after it first shocked audiences around the world. Maybe that’s why Roger Ebert hated the movie.

The Evil Dead (1981) - Bruce Campbell

Bruce Campbell stars in the film that kickstarted the Evil Dead franchise as Ash Williams who – along with his girlfriend and a small group of friends – set off for a night away in an isolated cabin. However, the night quickly takes a turn for the worst after they discover the Necronomicon – a powerful book that awakens possessive, malevolent spirits.

Sam Raimi’s classic horror film, The Evil Dead, was initially released with an X rating back in 1981 on account of its substantial graphic violence and gore. It was later given an NC-17 by the MPA when the movie was re-released back in 1994.

BONUS: Elles (2011) - Juliette Binoche

The title of Elles refers to the French magazine, Elle, for which Juliette Binoche’s character is researching an article about an underground sex worker ring orchestrated by female college students in Paris. However, the closer she gets to the facts behind the story, the more she begins to question her own personal interests. Graphic sexual content that goes as far as urinary fetishes initially earned this drama from Polish filmmaker Malgoska Szumowska an NC-17 rating.

BONUS: Happiness (1998) - Philip Seymour Hoffman 

The late Philip Seymour Hoffman plays one of several interconnected people all searching desperately for the most coveted emotion there is: happiness. Of course, their chosen ways of acquiring it are exactly the kind of reasons this Golden Globe nominee was initially given an NC-17 rating.

It has been 10 years since Nicolas Winding Refn’s atmospheric thriller Drive came onto the scene and inspired countless men to buy satin jackets with a scorpion on the back, wear driving gloves, and listen to moody synth-pop while cruising the streets at night. The movie, which felt like both a love letter to the work of directors like Michael Mann and a sign of what was to come, had a lot going for it: a gripping story about a Hollywood stuntman who spends his nights as a getaway driver, an undeniable vibe, and one remarkable cast that included Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, and Bryan Cranston, to name only a few.

Ryan Gosling (The Driver)

Carey Mulligan (Irene Gabriel)

Already a rising star in young Hollywood by the time she joined the Drive cast, Carey Mulligan’s portrayal of Irene Gabriel helped take the actress to new heights in late 2011. Immediately following her moving performance alongside Ryan Gosling, Mulligan appeared in Steve McQueen’s psychological thriller Shame, in which she played Sissy Sullivan, the tormented and suicidal sister of Michael Fassbender’s Brandon Sullivan. 

The next few years saw Carey Mulligan bounce between big-budget cinematic spectacles like The Great Gatsby and character-driven dramas like Inside Llewyn Davis (which also featured her on-screen husband from Drive, Oscar Isaac). Mulligan’s career reached new heights with her portrayal of the vengeful Cassandra “Cassie Thomas in the Academy Award-winning dark comedy Promising Young Woman. She will soon appear in Maria Schrader’s upcoming adaptation of She Said, which centers on the New York Times journalists who first broke the Harvey Weinstein story.

Bryan Cranston (Shannon)

Bryan Cranston was in the middle of his brilliant turn as Walter White on Breaking Bad when he joined the Drive cast as Shannon, The Driver’s handler and closest thing to a friend. You would think that after the AMC drama series came to an end in 2013 (after the show’s star took home multiple Primetime Emmy Awards and Golden Globes), Cranston would take some well-deserved time off, but that has been far from the case. 

In the past decade, Bryan Cranston has appeared in countless movies ranging from Contagion to Trumbo, shows like Sneaky Pete and Your Honor, and even several stage productions like All The Way, which saw him portray former U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson and Network.

Albert Brooks (Bernie Rose)

Albert Brooks’ portrayal of crime boss Bernie Rose is honestly one of the most terrifying aspects of Drive and is one of his best performances of the 21st Century ,if not his entire career. In the years following the release of the 2011 crime thriller, Brooks, who is perhaps best known either for playing Aaron Altman in Broadcast News (which earned him an Academy Award nomination) or Marlin in Pixar’s Finding Nemo, has shown up a handful of times in movies like This Is 40, A Most Violent Year, and Concussion.

This is on top of all the voice-acting roles Albert Brooks has taken on in the past decade, which includes a reprisal of his Finding Nemo character in 2016’s Finding Dory, The Secret Life of Pets, and The Little Prince.

Oscar Isaac (Standard Gabriel)

Oscar Isaac was already a relatively well-known name by the time he signed on to play Standard Gabriel in Drive, but his portrayal of the recently-released convict in serious money trouble helped usher in a new era for the talented actor. A couple of years after the release of the 2011 drama, Isaac shared the screen with Carey Mulligan once again the Coen Brothers’ musical dark comedy Inside Llewyn Davis, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination and a handful of other awards. After that it was one hit after another until he landed the role of Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which only took his career to new heights.

In 2022, Oscar Isaac will join the list of actors who have appeared in both Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe when he takes on the role of Marc Spector in the upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight.

Christina Hendricks (Blanche)

When Christina Hendricks joined the Drive cast in 2011, she was in the middle of her run as Joan Holloway on Mad Men, a role that earned her five consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations from 2010 to 2015. In the years following her portrayal of Chris Cook’s (James Biberi) ill-fated accomplice, Blanche, in Drive’s pawn store robbery gone wrong, Hendricks has shown up in movies like Bad Santa 2, The Neon Demon, American Woman, and Toy Story 4 (she was the voice of Gabby Gabby).

Over on the television side of things, Christina Hendricks has taken on major roles on shows like Hap and Leonard, Tin Star, and Good Girls. She currently voices the character Cherie on the adult animation comedy series Solar Opposites.

Ron Perlman (Nino 'Izzy' Paolozzi)

Ron Perlman, who portrayed Nino “Izzy” Paolozzi in Drive, has appeared in countless movies and TV shows since his character learned the hard way that trying to pull a fast one on The Driver wasn’t the best of ideas. In the past decade, Perlman has wrapped up his portrayal of Clay Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, starred on shows like Hand of God, StartUp, and The Capture, as well as smaller roles on The Blacklist, Maron, and the 2020 Reno 911! revival. And, that doesn’t even touch his voice-over work that includes American Dad, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tangled: The Series, and Transformers: Power of the Primes.

The film work completed by Ron Perlman since Drive is just as impressive. In the past decade, Perlman has appeared in several dozens of movies like Pacific Rim, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Stonewall, and Monster Hunter. Perlman is set to voice Mangiafuoco in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming adaptation of Pinocchio.

Kaden Leos (Benicio Gabriel)

Kaden Leos played Standard and Irene Gabriel’s young son, Benicio, in Drive. It appears that playing the young boy who forms a unique bond with The Driver in Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 crime thriller was Leos’ first and only time in front of a camera.

James Biberi (Chris Cook)

James Biberi’s character, Chris Cook, doesn’t get the best way to go out in Drive, but it’s hard to feel bad for the guy after everything he did in the moments leading up to his demise. In the years since being on the receiving end of a fork to the eye, Biberi has appeared in movies like Dead Man Down, The Girl on the Train, and Ocean’s 8.

The veteran actor, who happens to have completed the “Dick Wolf Hat Trick” with appearances on Law and Order, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (he’s appeared on all three shows multiple times), has shown up on The Blacklist and Daredevil in the years following the release of Drive.

Jeff Wolfe (Assassin In Elevator)

Jeff Wolfe only appears in one scene in Drive, but short amount of time on screen as the would-be assassin who gets his head kicked in by The Driver in the elevator is just too good to not include here. Over the years, the stuntman/actor has appeared in everything from The Avengers to Bosch, and Mayans M.C. to Gangster Squad, and several movie and TV projects. Wolfe has also served as a stunt coordinator on shows like MacGyver, Rush Hour, and Stalker, with additional work on Furious 7, Game Night, and Scandal.

Russ Tamblyn (Doc)

And then there is Russ Tamblyn, whose appearance in Drive is so short, you’ll miss if you’re not careful. In the years since playing Doc (he’s the doctor who stitches up The Driver near the end of the movie), Russ Tamblyn, who received an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Riff in West Side Story, has shown up in movies like Django Unchained and Hits. Tamblyn’s television work includes appearances on The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, The Haunting of Hill House, and the 2017 revival of Twin Peaks, which saw the veteran actor reprise the role of Dr. Lawrence Jacoby from the original 1990 series.

For those of us who grew up in the early 2000’s, Bo Burnham could be considered something of a cultural icon. Since debuting his first YouTube videos back in 2006, he’s created a successful career featuring comedy specials, movie appearances and even hopping into the directors chair. Fresh off his performance in the Oscar-nominated Promising Young Woman, he’s just announced his newest Netflix project.

In a Tweet posted earlier today the Eighth Grade director dropped an announcement for the upcoming Netflix special titled Inside. Check it out:

According to Burnham, he created the entire project by himself. That means no crew or audience to speak of. While the teaser wasn’t actual footage from the new special in question, he did say that the upcoming project is close to being finished.

Honestly, I’ll take all the Bo Burnham I can get at this point. The YouTube star turned director has been part of a number of impressive projects over the last couple of years. Outside of three successful comedy specials he also earned love from critics for his directorial debut Eighth Grade.

Burnham followed up the breakout A24 hit by co-starring alongside Carey Mulligan in Best Picture nominee Promising Young Woman. The debut film from Emerald Fennell was an awards season favorite, nominated in five categories, ultimately winning Best Original Screenplay. While most of the attention was on the film's subject matter and Mulligan's performance, Burnham earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 2020 Hollywood Critics Association.

More recently, it was announced that Burnham will be playing NBA legend Larry Bird in Adam McKay’s upcoming HBO series. The show will reportedly cover the showtime era Lakers and has already brought together a pretty impressive cast.

Honestly, I think this is just the beginning for Bo Burnham. Between his musical talent, impressive writing and comedic chops, the guy is poised for a successful career. I mean come on, he wrote, edited and shot an entire Netflix special over the last year, in a pandemic!

Although it’s impressive, it may not be that surprising, considering how his career kicked off. He’s elevated himself from the “i’m bo yo” guy to a bonafide comedian, on top of venturing in acting and directing. Burnham has some serious talent and I’m glad he’s had such a good run over the last few years. I’m sure that Inside will be another impressive feather in his cap.

Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman has been snatching up headlines, and awards, left and right since first releasing in theaters last December. However, a review that was published long before the theatrical release has kicked up quite a stir. After Carey Mulligan, who plays the titular Cassie Thomas, said that the review in question suggested she wasn’t ‘hot’ enough for the role, there has been a fair bit of back and forth between Mulligan, the reviewer and the National Society of Film Critics. Alison Brie, who co-stars alongside Mulligan in Promising Young Woman, recently came out to defend the actress in regards to the whole situation.

In the interview Alison Brie said that she admired Carey Mulligan for calling out the review and supported the Oscar-nominated actress's stance. In her own words:

Brie shared her thoughts on the controversy in an interview with Insider. Her comments come after a back and forth that all started when Carey Mulligan took issue with a review posted shortly after Promising Young Woman premiered at Sundance in January of 2020. Here’s how it all went down: In an interview with The New York Times, she called out the review in question:

Mulligan’s response was in regard to a section of the review that suggested one could see Margot Robbie, who was a producer on Promising Young Woman, in the role of Cassie Thomas instead. Variety, who published the piece, then decided to pin an apology atop the review after Mulligan’s statement:

However, Dennis Harvey, who penned the review, issued a statement of his own through The Guardian. In the critic’s response, he noted that Mulligan had misinterpreted what he wrote:

Not long after, the National Society of Film Critics, who Harvey is a member of, issued a statement of its own on Twitter, condemning the publisher for taking a stance and not supporting the critic:

By now, you can probably gather that the whole situation has spiraled into a full-blown drama. So, it’s not surprising to see Alison Brie sharing her thoughts on the dispute. It looks like the film has become controversial both on screen and off by taking on such difficult subject matter in addition to the review controversy.

Alison Brie’s comments come after an impressive awards season for Promising Young Woman. The debut film from Emerald Fennell has earned a number of nominations, including four at this year’s Academy Awards. Carey Mulligan even earned a coveted Best Actress nomination for her performance.

While we won’t know if Mulligan’s performance will earn her an Oscar, I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw more comments on this situation as we get closer to this year’s ceremony, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled. This past weekend, Carey Mulligan shined with her hosting debut on Saturday Night Live. Following her journey down sketch comedy, the Promising Young Woman actress will be working with all-time SNL favorite, Adam Sandler in a new Netflix movie. The Oscar-nominated actress has just been cast in a key role in the science-fiction film, Spaceman. It’s a pairing that feels perfectly aligned to be among the stars.

Adam Sandler has been attached to the leading role of Spaceman since October, but now he’ll have company in the talented British actress who is high on award-season predictions for her performance in Emerald Fennell’s dark comedy, Promising Young Woman. Per the Deadline report, Mulligan will be playing the wife of Sandler’s astronaut character in Spaceman.

Spaceman continues Adam Sandler’s partnership with Netflix, where he has previously found success with his films like Hubie Halloween and Murder Mystery. Though this project seems to drift a bit away from the ensemble slapstick comedies Sandler is well-known for delivering on the streaming platform. Spaceman will be an adaptation of Czech author Jaroslav Kalfar’s 2017 novel, Spaceman of Bohemia.

The book follows a Czech astronaut named Jakub Procházka who is sent to a location near to the planet Venus to retrieve samples of mysterious intergalactic dust. The mission is deemed too dangerous by other space programs, but Jakub and the Czech Republic are determined to complete the mission, so off he goes. Things go off the deep end for the astronaut when he learns his wife is leaving him while in space and he begins to hear a mysterious creature on his ship.

Spaceman of Bohemia is classified as absurdist fiction along with being a sci-fi novel, so there’s definitely room here for Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan to use their comedic chops in between telling the unique space story for Netflix. The movie will be directed by Chernobyl filmmaker Johan Renck from a script by newcomer Colby Day. No other talent has yet to be cast, but Sandler and Mulligan is enough to get me super pumped. In fact, the odd pairing is kind of a dream and I'm interested to see how the movie plays out.

Carey Mulligan’s career thus far has certainly been marked by her dramatic work, but between her stunning role in Promising Young Woman and funny bits on last weekend’s SNL episode, a door is swinging open for the British actress to get acquainted with more comedic pursuits and now she’ll join the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore as leading ladies opposite the Happy Gilmore star.

As far as Adam Sandler, the actor has dabbled in drama over the years, most recently with 2019’s Uncut Gems. After high acclaim for his role in the Safdie Brothers’ movie, the actor is also set to star in sports drama Hustle, where he’ll play a washed-up basketball scout who discovers a player in China. No word on the release dates for these upcoming Adam Sandler projects, but they do seem to mark a renewed interest in outside-the-box content. However, the recent drama surrounding the film has little to do with the plot, and is instead shifting to a growing dispute between star Carey Mulligan and a critic who she says didn’t think she was ‘hot’ enough for the role. Recently, the National Society of Film Critics issued a statement defending Dennis Harvey, who penned the controversial review that is the subject of Carey Mulligan’s ire.

In the organization’s statement, the group addresses the editor’s note apology issued by Variety and suggests that there was ample opportunity to work with the critic if the publisher deemed the review insensitive:

While the ongoing dispute only seems to be adding fuel to the awards fire for Promising Young Woman, it looks like neither side plans on backing down any time soon. Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman isn’t afraid to make viewers squirm. Despite the initial acclaim, one review in particular has drawn the ire of the actress, insinuating that she wasn’t “hot'' enough for the role. In her interview with the New York Times, Carey Mulligan suggested that the reviewer didn’t deem her “hot enough” to pull off the dark schemes in Promising Young Woman. Since that interview, Variety has issued an apology in the form of an editor's note at the top of the review:

After the apology, Carey Mulligan readdressed the review and apology in an interview with Zendaya via the outlet's Actors on Actors series. In her response, she notes that constructive criticism is perfectly acceptable, but she feels taking aim directly at the appearance of an actor may have been taking things too far, especially in light of Promising Young Woman’s subject matter.

The publisher agrees with the actress, even after being called out. It looks like Promising Young Woman has caused a stir both on-screen and off, which makes sense considering the scathing subject matter the film tackles.

Promising Young Woman may be a watershed moment for Carey Mulligan’s career, as she’s generating buzz with awards nominations for her performance. The film could potentially make its way to the Oscars. Perhaps her performance in Promising Young Woman will add another Academy Award nomination in an already impressive career. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise considering the widespread praise the film is receiving, as well as its memorable and wild ending.

Clancy Brown (Stanley Thomas)

In the role of Stanley Thomas, Cassie's father, Clancy Brown is prominently seen throughout Promising Young Woman. Most notably, Brown is known for The Shawshank Redemption, Highlander, Starship Troopers, and HBO's Carnivale. Additionally, he plays Mr. Krabs in SpongeBob SquarePants. In the role of Gail, Cassie's boss at Make Me Coffee, Laverne Cox plays another notable supporting character in Promising Young Woman. Carey Mulligan is drawing rave reviews for her performance in Promising Young Woman, which after a 17-day exclusive showing in theaters is coming to premium video-on-demand, thanks to Universal’s exclusive deals with movie theaters. If you’re a Mulligan fan, you’re likely eager to pony up the $20 to see her latest, but there are a lot of Carey Mulligan movies readily available on streaming to enjoy as well.

Let’s take a look at which films from the Oscar-nominated actress are available to watch on streaming and where you can find them.

An Education - IMDb TV

Fittingly enough, the film that represents Carey Mulligan’s lone Oscar nomination to date (something Promising Young Woman may change) is available to enjoy, as 2009’s An Education can be watched for free (with ads) on IMDb TV.

Directed by Lone Scherfig, An Education sees Mulligan star as Jenny Mellor, a teenage girl who becomes involved with an older man (Peter Sarsgaard), who reveals different aspects of life in 1960s suburban London to her. Alfred Molina, Olivia Williams, Dominic Cooper and Rosamund Pike co-star.

An Education received three Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay (Nick Hornby), but Mulligan was the attraction for many. In the review by Roger Ebert, he compared the then 24-year-old to Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn. “She makes the role luminous when it could have been sad or awkward. She has such lightness and grace, you’re pretty sure this is the birth of a star,” Ebert wrote.

Mulligan had a few credits for TV and film at the time of An Education, but Ebert was correct, this was the beginning of her stardom.

Wildlife - Netflix

Carey Mulligan’s most recent big-screen performance was in the 2018 indie Wildlife, which was the feature directorial debut of actor Paul Dano. This time she was the mother to a young man (newcomer Ed Oxenbould) whose worldview is coming into form.

Despite being headlined by Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal as the young man’s quarrelling and dysfunctional parents, and strong critical response - it is a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and scored an 80 on Metacritic - the film came and went pretty quietly after a Cannes Film Festival premiere.

It’s certainly a quieter film, but the trio of Mulligan, Oxenbould and Gyllenhaal are strong. Even though some of the gorgeous vistas of Montana probably beg for a big screen, the film will play well on your TV if you decide to catch up with it on Netflix.

Inside Llewyn Davis - Amazon Prime Video

It’s probably not a stretch to imagine that the Coen Brothers are on many actors’ bucket list of directors to work with in their career. If they were on Carey Mulligan’s, she got to add a check mark to their name in 2013 with Inside Llewyn Davis.

Mulligan plays Jean, a folk singer who, despite being engaged to Jim (Justin Timberlake), sleeps with Oscar Isaac’s titular weary musician and fears that she is now pregnant.

Inside Llewyn Davis was Isaac’s big break, but some Mulligan highlights from the film include her getting to sing folk songs with Timberlake and delivering some all-time great put downs toward Isaac, including “Everything you touch turns to shit, you’re like King Midas’s idiot brother.”

Shame - HBO Max

We also got to hear Carey Mulligan sing solo in Steve McQueen’s Shame. In the film, Michael Fassbender plays a sex addict whose carefully crafted private life becomes disrupted when his sister, played by Mulligan, arrives.

Despite calling out her singing performances in both Shame and Inside Llewyn Davis, no one would confuse Mulligan with a recording artist - that distinction goes to her husband, Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford - but her whispery rendition of “New York, New York” in the film is beautiful and haunting.

Pride & Prejudice - Peacock

We’ve talked about her star-making role, but Carey Mulligan’s career officially got underway four years prior to An Education, when she served as one of the Bennet sisters in Joe Wright’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, her first IMDb credited role.

The Bennet sisters were filled with young, promising English actresses. Headlined by Keira Knightley’s Oscar-nominated performance as Elizabeth, Mulligan played her sister Kitty, with Rosamund Pike, Jena Malone and Talulah Riley rounding out the group.

Her time on screen was brief, but it's a pretty great film to get to call your first.

And When Did You Last See Your Father? - YouTube

If you’re missing any titles from completing the Carey Mulligan filmography, there’s a decent chance one of them is And When Did You Last See Your Father? from 2007. Based on English poet Blake Morrison’s relationship with his father, and starring Colin Firth and Jim Broadbent, Mulligan gives a supporting performance.

Mudbound - Netflix

Netflix’s pursuit for a Best Picture Oscar began in earnest in 2018, when Roma was widely considered the favorite before the Academy, ultimately, went with Green Book. However, Netflix experienced its first Best Picture snub in 2017, when Mudbound, directed by Dee Rees and starring Mary J. Blige, Jason Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund, and Carey Mulligan, was left out of the top prizes’ nominees. Netflix did win its first Oscar trophy in 2017 though.

Mitchell and Hedlund star as two World War II veterans who return home to Mississippi. These two brothers-in-arms find solace in each other, but are threatened by the racism that still engulfs society.

Mary J. Blige was rightly nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance, but Mulligan once again proves how consistently reliable she is with a solid turn as Hedlund’s sister-in-law, who has her own struggles with her husband.

Drive - IMDb TV

If An Education wasn’t your cup of tea, many likely discovered Carey Mulligan in Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, the uber-cool Ryan Gosling-led crime-drama.

Mulligan plays the neighbor that Gosling’s quiet getaway driver befriends and who, along with her son, convinces him to help her ex-con husband (Oscar Isaac) get out of some trouble. While the actual dialogue between the two characters is sparse, the chemistry between Gosling and Mulligan is great.

BAFTA would end up nominating Mulligan for Best Supporting Actress for Drive, which is her only other individual nomination among the major awards groups that she has outside of An Education, oddly enough. Maybe she'd have better luck with the awards bodies if, as Mulligan suggested, they had to prove they watched contending movies.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps - Amazon Prime Video

Carey Mulligan’s biggest successes thus far in her career have come from indie or smaller studio films. Her two biggest films to date are probably 2013’s The Great Gatsby and Oliver Stone’s 24-year-later sequel to Wall Street, Wall Street Money: Never Sleeps.

Mulligan was coming right off An Education to star as the daughter of Michael Douglas’ Gordon Gekko and the love interest to Shia LaBeouf, who serves in what had been the Charlie Sheen role as Gekko’s protege.

Despite the late 2000s financial crisis serving as a backdrop, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps wasn’t a success. Thankfully, neither Mulligan nor any one else on the cast saw a dip in their Hollywood stocks.

Public Enemies - Starz

Coming out in 2009, Carey Mulligan had pretty much a blink-and-you’ll-miss-her role in the Michael Mann directed, Johnny Depp-led film Public Enemies.

Telling the tale of John Dillinger and the FBI’s pursuit after dubbing him Public Enemy No. 1, one of the few places Dillinger has for safety is in a brothel run by a friend. Mulligan plays one of the girls working at the brothel whom Dillinger knows.

Though one of Mulligan’s shortest performances on this list, it's still an underrated movie in my opinion.

Brothers - Amazon Prime Video

Carey Mulligan was all over the place in 2009 if you knew where to look. In this instance you could find her as a supporting player in the family/war drama Brothers, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire.

The film follows the titular brothers, Gyllenhaal and Maguire. Maguire is a soldier believed to have died in Afghanistan, though he, along with another soldier, was actually captured. Gyllenhaal connects with his sister-in-law (Portman) and nieces when Maguire’s character is believed to be dead. Mulligan comes into picture as the widow of one of Maguire’s fellow soldiers.

Suffragette - Netflix

Just ahead of the 200 year anniversary of women securing the right to vote in England, Suffragette was released in 2015, led by Carey Mulligan as a young working mother who gets swept up in the movement and joins a radical political activism group.

Fighting alongside Mulligan’s character are Helena Bonham Carter, Anne-Marie Duff, and Meryl Streep as one of the movement’s key leaders, Emmeline Pankhurst. Brendan Gleeson and Ben Whishaw also star.

Even with a great cast, the film had a quiet reception upon its initial release, though one might have imagined what the response may have been just a year or two later when international protests like the Women’s March made headlines and were very much in the spirit of the characters Mulligan and cast brought to the screen.

The Greatest - Amazon Prime Video

The Greatest rounds out what was Carey Mulligan's breakout year in 2009 (the film played the festival circuit before officially being released in the U.S. in 2010). Mulligan stars with a cast that includes Pierce Brosnan, Susan Sarandon, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, in a film that focuses on a family that attempts to get over the loss of their son.

Promising Young Woman has been in theaters for a couple of weeks now. But with the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on movie theaters many folks are choosing to watch films from the comfort (and safety) of their own homes. Fortunately, Emerald Fennell’s directorial debut was made available for PVOD today. The film follows Cassie, played by Carey Mulligan, as she takes vengeance on predatory men and those that have wronged her in the past.

If you are here, I sincerely hope you’ve already watched Promising Young Woman. If you haven't, make sure you are a-okay with Promising Young Woman Spoilers, because this article is full of them. Seriously, this movie is a vicious, wild ride and is best experienced with fresh, unspoiled eyes. Now that we’ve taken care of that, we can jump into the Promising Young Woman ending, how Carey Mulligan’s Cassie pulled it off, and what the ending means for Bo Burnham’s Ryan.

What Happened And How Promising Young Woman Ended

Promising Young Woman follows Cassie, played by Carey Mulligan, as she baits predatory men into taking advantage of her in a seemingly intoxicated condition at local bars and nightclubs. Cassie then turns the tables at the last minute and confronts those men about their actions, before they attempt to sleep with her. Each confrontation marks a name and a tally for her notebook, which contains what appears to be hundreds of entries.

Later, viewers find out Cassie’s best friend Nina, was raped and presumably committed suicide. Nina’s trauma and death are the motivation behind Cassie's weekend activities. When she finds out that Nina’s rapist, Al Monroe (Chris Lowell), is back in town to get married, she orchestrates a plan to get back at Al and those involved with Nina’s rape.

In her final act of vengeance, Cassie poses as a stripper for the bachelor party, lures Al to a bedroom and handcuffs him to the bed. Cassie then reveals herself to the unwitting Al and attempts to carve Nina’s name into his skin. Al breaks free and proceeds to suffocate Cassie to death.

The next morning Al and his best man Joe burn her body. Cassie's parents file a missing persons report to no avail, and Ryan lies to the police about her whereabouts. Ryan then attends Al’s wedding where he receives a text from none other than Cassie. As the texts roll in Ryan hears the incoming sound of sirens. The cops arrest Al for Cassie’s murder, Joe runs and Ryan is warned that it’s not over yet. Cut to lawyer Jordan Green, who opens a parcel of mail containing a note from Cassie and the phone with the video of Nina’s rape. Cassie’s remains are then discovered by the police, with little more than her pendant bearing Nina’s name remaining.

How Cassie (Carey Mulligan) Pulled Off The Twist

Despite dying at the hands of Al Monroe, Cassie left certain clues in place to ensure that those involved in Nina’s rape and eventual death would get what was coming to them. Those final scenes are important for piecing together exactly how she did it. Her main piece of evidence was acquired from Madison, who gave her an old phone containing a video of the event. The video also revealed that her boyfriend, Ryan was there.

Using the video as leverage she was able to learn about the location of the bachelor party from Ryan. Cassie then mailed the exact location of her whereabouts (Al’s bachelor party), along with the phone from Madison to the repentant lawyer, Jordan Green. The package also contained a message to inform the police if he didn’t hear back from her. As for the text messages, viewers may have noticed that the texts to Ryan at the wedding had ‘scheduled’ written under them, insinuating that Cassie orchestrated the entire plan before going to the bachelor party.

Because of her past experience with Nina, Cassie didn’t trust anyone. But after being moved by Jordan Green’s realization and apology, she chose to trust him with the only thing that could prove Nina’s rape, the video on the old cell phone from Madison. In the end Green fulfilled Cassie's last wish and forwarded her final correspondence to the police, as they arrive shortly after the wedding vows to arrest Al for murder.

What The Ending Means For Ryan, Cassie and Nina

After her death and Al’s arrest (for Cassies murder, which the police explicitly state) it’s presumed Jordan Green informed the police of her last whereabouts. Because of this, it's safe to assume that the police have the phone and video implicating Al, Joe, Ryan and others. The lawyer may have forwarded the entire package to the police and they are simply waiting to analyze the video and bring up further charges. It’s all but guaranteed that Nina will come up in future trials, so the prosecution may be holding onto it to secure a conviction.

In her final act Cassie was able to finally avenge Nina, as she got back at almost everyone involved. Al is headed to jail for murder, and Joe will presumably be punshined for his involvment. She taught lessons to both Madison and Dean Walker, two individuals who failed to act or believe Nina when the accusations first came out. But when the credits roll there’s still one loose end: Cassie’s ex-boyfriend Ryan.

Ryan knowingly lied to the police about Cassie’s last known whereabouts, no doubt to save his own skin, but they may not know that, unless Cassie mentioned it in her final message. Did Cassie specifically ask Jordan Green to mention him to the police, or did she let him off the hook? I have my doubts that she would let him off so easily. It's not clear if Ryan appears in the incriminating video, but his voice is definitely heard. Even if Ryan wasn't arrested at the wedding, that's some pretty damning evidence in the hands of the police. Instead, I believe Cassie is forcing Ryan to live in a constant state of paranoia. He will never feel safe, or comfortable again. He will have to live with knowing that his entire world could come crumbling down at any moment.

Over the course of the past decade, Carey Mulligan has demonstrated her exceptional acting talents in a variety of distinctive and distinguished roles. Promising Young Woman (2020)

As an intentionally thorny, unwavering, and brazenly confrontational takedown of toxic masculinity and "boys will be boys" culture, Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell's ferocious first film, is a strong early showcase for this exciting early filmmaker, but it also gives us another excellent lead performance from Carey Mulligan. In the role of Cassandra Thomas, a 30-year-old medical school dropout out for revenge against predatory men after a traumatizing incident from college, Mulligan brings a great deal of depth and dynamism to her vigilante protagonist, providing a wickedly dark sense of humor that ultimately masks her own emotional devastation.

While the marketing materials make Promising Young Woman look more lighthearted than it is, the movie itself is intentionally quite bitterly sad, even when it adopts a colorful presentation to intentionally counterbalance the character's tumultuous inner life. As always, Mulligan displays courage and captivation in this complex lead role, presenting a fierceness and fearlessness that's stunning to watch. As one of her most prominent leading roles yet, Mulligan continues to demonstrate the wealth of her vast and versatile talents.

An Education (2009)

In what remains her only Oscar-nominated performance to date, Carey Mulligan provided a spellbinding lead performance in An Education, the period drama which served as Mulligan's Hollywood calling card. As a smart, self-dependent 16-year-old girl who finds herself caught in an affair with an older man (Peter Sarsgaard), this intricate, introspective character piece provided our talented lead actress with an opportunity to showcase a fragile, developing young woman trying to discover her womanhood while caught in a fraught relationship.

In her first leading role, Mulligan gracefully captures the insecurities and evolving depths of this young and learning character, who's based on journalist Lynn Barber from her memoir of the same name. Her performance is, at once, charming and heartbreaking, filled with susceptibility and maturity that show the dynamic layers that she'd continue to demonstrate in her future performances. It's stunningly dense, delicate work, one that plays very well in Mulligan's favor.

Having proven her talents in a number of other supporting turns, An Education was Carey Mulligan's chance to showcase her outstanding star power. Thankfully, she aced it.

Shame (2011)

Director Steve McQueen's sophomore feature, Shame, is a reflective and pensive drama following a bachelor (Michael Fassbender) who has a sex addiction that prevents him from having a functioning lifestyle. His life is made more complicated when his sister (Carey Mulligan) re-enters his life. While this character study primarily follows the perspective of our addiction-addled main character, a man who cannot help others as he's unable to help himself, Mulligan's extroverted lounge character similarly carries an unknown burden of trauma that haunts her throughout the course of this film.

As these two suffering characters find themselves caught in their own individualistic cycles of trauma, Mulligan is given an excellent chance to play against the typically refrained, modest characters that she was associated with after An Education's success. She embodies a suffering-but-present person who uses her art and openness to mask her own feelings of vulnerabilities and difficulties, particularly as she isn't fully able to connect to the one other person who understands the pain she carries on a day-to-day basis. This extraordinary performance is among Mulligan's most devastatingly haunting.

Never Let Me Go (2010)

Based on Kazuo Ishiguro's 2005 novel of the same name, Mark Romanek's Never Let Me Go is a poignant, puncturing blend of character-driven period drama and high-minded dystopia that follows a group of boarding school friends who reconnect later in life. But it's later revealed that these characters aren't merely themselves but clones, scientifically made for the sole purpose of harvesting organs in case their real-life counterparts should need them.

The result is a somberly fascinating blend of sci-fi inventiveness and understated humanity that provides our three young leads, Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, and Andrew Garfield, with a chance to demonstrate their exquisite talents. And it's Mulligan, in particular, who really flourishes, particularly as she was coming off the critical, audience, and award season success of An Education only the year prior.

As Kathy, a young woman who fancies a crush on Tommy (Garfield), this doomed romantic relationship is filled with existential melancholy and keenly-observed social and personality-based reflection, which paints a lovely-but-devastating portrait of characters who are, at once, intrinsically humane and detected from reality entirely.

Wildlife (2018)

By both critics and audiences alike, Paul Dano's directorial debut, Wildlife, was sorely overlooked, which is certainly a shame because it features a trio of excellent lead performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Ed Oxenbould, and Carey Mulligan. But it's Mulligan, in particular, who really stands out in this period drama. She portrays Jeanette Brinson, a domesticated housewife who finds herself emotionally liberated and psychologically unraveling when her husband leaves the picture, with tinges of disquiet and disillusionment at her suburban lifestyle and society's overloaded expectations. Once a character filled with optimistic encouragement, Jeanette falls into a spiral of bitter resentment and rage that's fueled by a turning point in her marriage.

We watch as Jeanette becomes a rapturous personality, but barely identifiable to the woman we briefly knew before. It's an excellent showcase for Mulligan's capability to build and furnish the inner lives of her character to marvelous results, particularly when they chameleon into someone else. In a career full of triumphs, Wildlife showcases some of Carey Mulligan's most spirited acting to date in the film's most impressive performance.

Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

In Joel and Ethan Coen's wistful, beautifully melancholy Inside Llewyn Davis, we primarily follow the life of our sadsack title character, an immensely talented but arrogant and misfortune person who has all the talent in the world to be a successful folk singer but little of the fortune to pave the way for fame. Amid the early '60s changing era, Davis is a rolling tumbleweed, never able to find his way home — or able to make a proper home for himself. He constantly needs to prove himself, even if that costs him any sense of contentment.

But while Davis is our focal point, the colorful characters he interacts with throughout his hard-fought days are what keep this film from wallowing in remorse for its lonesome protagonist. Among the most notable supporting characters is Carey Mulligan's Jean Berkley, Davis's friend whom he may have impregnated.

In addition to showcasing her strong singing talents, Mulligan brings a jagged edge to her character, which presents her as prickly but also pregnable, as she shares her own insecurities about the world.

Suffragette (2015)

While it's definitely not without its flaws, Suffragette tells a timely story of the growing suffragette movement of early 20th century Britain, primarily from the perspective of Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan), a hard-working wife and mother who finds her life forever changed by this period of revolution. Although its pacing can leave something to be desired, Mulligan's expectedly excellent lead performance gives the movie its sense of conviction and courage handily, showcasing the persistent change of this everyday woman who put everything on the line to stand against the oppression she and many other women regularly faced. Her performance is stirring and sentimental, filled with conviction and nuance that brings this historical personality to the present in a vivid and personable fashion.

Mulligan is always great at finding the complexity of her characters. While she's playing a character who fits into the conventions of a period-based biopic, she continues to find the heartfelt earnestness and forthright spirit of her characters. This is certainly no exception, proving to be another great demonstration of her outstanding acting skills.

One of scripted television's longest-running institutions, Saturday Night Live, is headed back into production and returning to the studio after its unexpected time airing with pre-taped skits from cast members' homes at the end of last season. While fans certainly admired the desire of the cast and crew to keep the good ship SNL afloat as much as possible under some trying circumstances, you can bet that viewers will be looking to see the legendary skitcom return to something much more like normal in Season 46. With new announcements on who will be hosting and performing as musical guests, it looks like all of our dreams will be coming true.

Every year brings an assorted number of wonders for those who love SNL. We tune in each week for the promise of laughs, fun surprises, wild satire, the occasional shocking (or shockingly funny) screw up and to see what kind of silliness the guest hosts (and possibly musical guests) will be roped into while trying to deliver the funniest possible show. This season will see Kenan Thompson head into his eighteenth season on the live show, further cementing his place as the longest-running cast member for SNL ever, but this promises to be a banner year for the series in other ways, as well.

This is, after all, an election year, and those behind Saturday Night Live are nothing if not truly gifted when it comes to both lampooning politicians and also casting said political figures for the show. We already know that (after sounding like he was totally done with putting in the effort) Alec Baldwin will return yet again to step into the presidential shoes of Donald Trump, a role that won him an Emmy in 2017, with former cast member Maya Rudolph reprising her Emmy-winning part as Kamala Harris.

Word also came down recently that they'll be joined by Jim Carrey, who will take over the part of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden from another former cast member, Jason Sudeikis. Who knows, with the way these special guest appearances are going, we might be treated to Brad Pitt's Dr. Anthony Fauci again. By the way, Pitt's performance also got an Emmy nod this year, so if we see a lot more special guests coming in to play real life people, I wouldn't be surprised.

Meanwhile, we do have our first announcement of who will host and act as musical guest on the Season 46 premiere of SNL, and you really can't be mad at who was chosen. Hot! Hot! Hot! Chris Rock, of course, is another former cast member, having hit the SNL stage weekly from 1990 to 1993. The actor / comedian / talk show host has been back to lead the festivities at his old stomping grounds twice before, and is funny to his bones, so you know he'll bring his best on opening night. Rapper Megan Thee Stallion is coming off of several hits, including this summer's naughty scorcher "WAP," with Cardi B, and this will be her first time on SNL.

October 10 - Bill Burr With Musical Guest Jack White

Comedian and actor Bill Burr will make his SNL debut on October 10. The Monday Morning Podcast host was most recently seen in The King of Staten Island with Pete Davidson, and The Mandalorian, and his animated family sitcom, F is for Family, will be back for a fifth and final season on Netflix. After a bit of a shakeup, Jack White will step in to act as musical guest on the episode, marking his fourth time rocking the halls of 30 Rock.

October 17 - Issa Rae With Musical Guest Justin Bieber

The star, executive producer, and creator of the HBO hit comedy Insecure, Issa Rae, will mark her SNL hosting debut on October 17. Joining Rae on the show will be Justin Bieber, who will appear as musical guest for the fourth time.

October 24 - Adele With Musical Guest H.E.R.

Music superstar Adele makes her hosting debut on Saturday Night Live with the October 24, episode, after previously acting as musical guest way back in October 2008, and again in November 2015. Ten-time Grammy Award nominee H.E.R. (who won two of the awards in 2019) will make her debut as musical guest on the same night.

October 31 - John Mulaney With Musical Guest The Strokes

Comedian and former SNL writer John Mulaney will hit the stage to host for the fourth time on October 31. Rockers The Strokes will also perform for the fourth time.

November 7 - Dave Chappelle With Musical Guest Foo Fighters

Dave Chappelle returns for his second hosting gig, having previously hit the stage right after the 2016 presidential election. The Foo Fighters will perform as musical guests, for what will be the band's eighth time appearing.

November 14 through 28 - No New SNL Episodes

December 5 - Jason Bateman With Musical Guest Morgan Wallen

Ozark and The Outsider star Jason Bateman will return to host when the show comes back from a three-week break on December 5. This will be Bateman's second time in the job; he last hosted in February 2005. Country music star Morgan Wallen is scheduled as musical guest, after being booted off of the second episode this season when producers found out he hadn't been following their new production guidelines.

December 12 - Timothée Chalamet With Musical Guest Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band

Dune's Timothée Chalamet is coming to host SNL for his first time on December 12, while Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be along for their third performance.

Former cast member Kristen Wiig returns for her fourth hosting gig on December 19, with her starring role as Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984 heading to HBO Max (and theaters) on Christmas Day. Meanwhile, pop superstar Dua Lipa will hit SNL for the second time.

January 30 - John Krasinski With Musical Guest Machine Gun Kelly

Everyone's favorite prankster from The Office (and star of Jack Ryan and A Quiet Place), John Krasinski, will host when the series returns for the first episode of the new year. Singer/rapper/actor Machine Gun Kelly will appear as musical guest for the first time.

February 6 - Dan Levy With Musical Guest Phoebe Bridgers

Schitt's Creek co-creator/actor Dan Levy will host SNL for the first time on February 6. Rock/indie folk singer Phoebe Bridgers appears as musical guest.

February 13 - Regina King With Musical Guest Nathaniel Rateliff

Oscar, Golden Globe, and four-time Emmy Award winner Regina King will step on the 30 Rock stage for the first time on February 13. Folk and R&B artist Nathaniel Rateliff will perform.

For nearly 60 years, Doctor Who has remained a staple of British television. The series, centered around an extraterrestrial Time Lord known as The Doctor who flies around in his time-traveling police box, the TARDIS, with several different human companions and in several different incarnations, is beloved by many and a series with the convenience of being rebooted constantly for new generations and times. Therefore, over the course of its very extensive run, several famous actors (and soon-to-be famous actors) have worked on the sci-fi show. With a cast that included hundreds of actors over the course of several decades, it's understandable if you forgot that these familiar faces once appeared on the program. Therefore, let's get in our own mini TARDISes (or however you pluralize the word TARDIS) and go back through the show's long history and recall who once appeared on Doctor Who.

Andrew Garfield

Before he played Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network, Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge, or Peter Parker/Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man movies, Andrew Garfield was a rising British talent who branched out in a big way when he appeared in two Season 3 episodes of Doctor Who. In the popular sci-fi series, Garfield played the part of Frank, an intelligent-but-poor young man living in New York City in 1930, during the Great Depression, who helped the Doctor fight against the dreaded Daleks in their attempt to destroy the world in "Daleks in Manhattan" and "Evolution Of the Daleks."

Felicity Jones

Before she became an Oscar nominee through her performance in 2014's The Theory of Everything, and before she was seen in a galaxy far, far away in 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Felicity Jones could be seen in Doctor Who's Season 4, Episode 7, "The Unicorn and the Wasp." In this installment, Jones played Robina Redmond, a.k.a. Ada Mullins, a.k.a. "The Unicorn," a cockney master jewelry thief who is later questioned by the Doctor and Agatha Christie. This 2008 episode of the series might've served as some viewers' introduction to the actress before she became a big star.

Simon Pegg

An actor/screenwriter best known for his work in the Cornetto trilogy — Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End — as well as his roles in the Star Trek and Mission: Impossible cinematic franchises, Simon Pegg is an exceptional talent who has established himself in a number of nerd-friendly properties. Suffice to say, it shouldn't be a shock to know that in 2005, just a year after Shaun of the Dead became a cult favorite around the world, he made an appearance in Doctor Who. 

Specifically, he was seen in Episode 7 of Season 1 as the sinister The Editor in "The Long Game," a role that was notably different than what audiences saw from the Shaun of the Dead and Spaced actor prior. Hell, it's more cold-blooded than the characters we are used to seeing from the affable actor today. It was another showcase of Pegg's undervalued versatility, proving once more how vast his talents are.

Olivia Colman

Before she became an Oscar-winning actress through her fantastic performance in The Favourite, and well before she took over the leading role on Netflix's The Crown, Olivia Colman was a hard-working character actress who certainly accredited a number of movies and television shows to her name throughout the years. One such show was Doctor Who, where Colman played a mother and a form of Patient Zero in the first episode of Season 5, "The Eleventh Hour." 

It'd certainly be understandable if you forget that Colman was in the show, though. She played such a small part, her character didn't even have a name. Furthermore, Olivia Colman's name was even misspelled in the credits, calling her "Olivia Coleman." Admittedly, showrunner Steven Moffat claims they "wasted" the award-winning actress by giving her such a small role through this guest star appearance. It's safe to say that things worked out for the actress, though. In addition to this minor part in the proceedings, Colman read the audiobook version of The Forgotten Army.

James Corden

Nowadays, James Corden has made a splash stateside through The Late Late Show with James Corden and Carpool Karaoke, but the actor/television personality first grew prominence in the U.K., and it shouldn't be a shock to know that he starred in an episode of Doctor Who. Specifically, Corden can be seen in Episodes 11, "The Lodger," and 12, "Closing Time," of Season 6, where he played the role of Craig Owens, a man who rented a room to the Doctor and later helped him defeat the Cybermen. In return, the Doctor helped Craig confess his feelings to his friend, Sophie. 

During his time on the show, Craig and Doctor Who shared a close and personal friendship. While not quite as known in the U.S. back in 2010, James Corden was quite a big name in Britain on both the telly and on the stage when these episodes aired. So, in that sense, Corden was considered a big guest star for the series.

Carey Mulligan

Before she became an Oscar-nominated actress for An Education, and appeared in movies like Never Let Me Go, Shame, The Great Gatsby, and Inside Llewyn Davis, Carey Mulligan could be seen in the 2007 Doctor Who episode, "Blink." In the Season 3, Episode 10 installment of the popular science-fiction series, Mulligan played Sally Sparrow, a photographer in London who encountered the Weeping Angels and indirectly helped Doctor Who in a mission. It came a curious time in Mulligan's career. It was shortly after she grew prominence for 2005's Pride and Prejudice but a couple years before the actress would become a household name through her Oscar-nominated lead performance in the aforementioned Best Picture-nominated 2009 drama, An Education.

Daniel Kaluuya

Before he became an Oscar-nominated actor made famous for his leading role in Jordan Peele's excellent Get Out, as well as stellar performances in Widows, Black Panther, and, most recently, Queen & Slim, Daniel Kaluuya had a prominent role in the Doctor Who episode, "Fifteen Million Merits," as Bingham "Bing" Madsen. In the Season 1, Episode 2 installment, Kaluuya served as the protagonist of the episode, which means that for many Doctor Who fans, this installment likely served as their introduction to the rising talent — a nice glimpse at his great acting talents years before he made it big.

Kylie Minogue

The Australian actress/musician known for constantly reinventing herself, Kylie Minogue fans have seen the artist take her career in a number of places. One such destination was the set of Doctor Who, where Minogue played Astrid Peth in the Season 4 premiere, "Voyage of the Damned." In her time in the show, Minogue played a native of the planet Sto who worked as a waitress for the ill-fated Titanic. She was nearly a companion for the Doctor. The actress/musician keeps busy with a variety of different projects, music-related and otherwise. This Doctor Who role only became a limited engagement.

Tom Ellis

Before he played the devil incarnate in Lucifer, Tom Ellis appeared in Doctor Who as Thomas Milligan, a doctor who worked for the NHS in 2008, i.e. the Year That Never Was, in "Last of the Time Lords," the 13th episode of Season 3. While he was referenced or alluded to again in a few other later episodes, this episode was his one and only role in Doctor Who (for now, at least). 

He played this part before he became a household name through his leading role in Lucifer, and there have been some fans eager to see Ellis play the part of Doctor Who in a future incarnation. Both Joe Henderson, the co-showrunner of Lucifer, and Ellis himself have responded to this request.

Nick Frost

Like his Cornetto trilogy co-star and frequent collaborator Simon Pegg, Nick Frost also made an appearance in Doctor Who. Specifically, Frost played Santa Claus in the 12th Season 8 episode, "Death in Heaven," and in the 2014 Christmas special, "Last Christmas." The former was used as a lead-in to the latter, as the 10th annual holiday episode saw Kris Kringle and Doctor Who (Peter Capaldi) teaming up to save the North Pole from dream crabs.

Every year, the Oscar nominations are met with celebration and frustration as brilliant work is recognized and snubbed in equal measure. This year, one of the perceived snubs that received the most backlash was the lack of any female nominees in the Best Director category. It made some question whether the Oscar voters had even watched the movies, including 2010 Best Actress nominee Carey Mulligan.

So should Oscar voters have to prove they’ve watched the movies? Carey Mulligan certainly thinks so. Addressing the possible female director nominees who didn’t make it in this year, Carey Mulligan said:

Carey Mulligan seems to have some doubts about the way the system is currently set up given the caliber of the films that go unrecognized. The members of the Academy are sent screeners and it’s on them to watch them. Then they vote based on what they think of the movies. But that process may not necessarily be the best if deserving movies are not nominated.

The actress doesn’t understand how Academy members can watch certain movies and not think they deserve recognition. Carey Mulligan was specifically perplexed by how Hustlers, Little Women and The Farewell, all films directed by women, were not nominated in the Best Director category, and seems to believe that if voters actually watched them, they would have been nominated.

So in her conversation with Variety, Carey Mulligan mused on a possible way to remedy the situation, and that would be to not allow Academy members to vote unless they’ve seen all the movies in question.

The obvious response to that would be, ‘Well, how do you prove it?’ Carey Mulligan suggested that there be a test that Oscar voters would have to take in order to prove they’ve seen all the movies and are taking their experience with each one into account when casting their votes. I assume that such a test would ask questions about the films that only someone who has seen them could answer.

That way, the nominees and eventual Oscar winners are not the product of low information Academy voters who have only seen a few of the films and/or are just voting for people they like or based on some criteria not related to the film itself.

I don’t think you’ll find too many movie fans that would take umbrage with Carey Mulligan’s opinion here. It seems obvious that if you’re voting on something, you should be fully informed about each of your choices. When it comes to Oscar voting, that means seeing all of the movies.

It’s tough though, because busy industry professionals don’t necessarily have time to see every movie that's in contention. But perhaps there is a way to do what Carey Mulligan suggested by having voters prove what they’ve seen and only allow them to vote in the categories where they’ve seen every film, while abstaining from the rest.

It’s not perfect, but it might be an improvement. But even under that system, there would still be snubs. Because while you can say X film or Y person got snubbed, these categories have a limited number of nominees. If you sub someone in, that means you’re inevitably snubbing someone else by taking them out. Art is subjective and the films left out may be brilliant, but so are the ones that made it in, so there are no easy answers that will please everyone.

Carey Mulligan's filmography offers a number of acclaimed performances that truly run the gamut, from her Academy Award-nominated turn in Lone Scherfig's 2010 An Education to her 2007 role in a fan favorite episode of Doctor Who. Still, the actress is now facing one particularly harsh critic: herself. Mulligan has some issues with her own performance in Baz Luhrmann's 2013 take on F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, suggesting that the size and scope of the production prevented her from connecting with the character of Daisy Buchanan as much as she would have liked. She explains:

In The Great Gatbsy, Carey Mulligan's Daisy Buchanan is the complicated love interest of Leonardo DiCaprio's Jay Gatsby. The notion of working with one Academy Award winner certainly goes some way to explaining Mulligan's "overawe" comment, and that's only one of the other members of the film's ensemble. The Great Gatsby also features sizable roles for Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Jason Clarke. That's in addition to having an Oscar nominated director in Baz Luhrmann, and a $190 million budget aimed at playing up the period spectacle for the film's 3D release.

In addition, Mulligan's comments to Variety suggest that, when it comes to her performance in The Great Gatsby, the production was simply too big for its own good. She explains:

The Daisy Buchanan role is one that has challenged actors for nearly a century. Lois Wilson was the first to play the part in a now-lost silent film version released in 1926, just one year after F. Scott Fitzgerald's original novel was published. In subsequent decades, Betty Field, Mia Farrow and Mira Sorvino would all headline various big screen adaptations over the subsequent decades. While Carey Mulligan may herself feel that her take needs improvement, she's also being a bit hard on herself. Her take holds its own against the other Daisy Buchanans the silver screen has known.

In a perfect world, production would just resume and Carey Mulligan could try again until she gets a performance she's truly proud of. After all, Jay Gatsby is precisely not the type of person to agree when you tell him you can't repeat the past. Surely he'd champion Carey's mulligan.

In the early 20th century, women didn’t have the ability to vote for elected officials in England, and after repeatedly being denied their rights, many decided that they needed to take drastic action. Led by the call of activist Emmeline Pankhurst, women began to commit acts of public disruption – doing everything from throwing stones through windows to setting fires in empty buildings.

Director Sarah Gavron’s Suffragette brings the story of these freedom fighters to the big screen, but the movie also presents an interesting question: were these women actually terrorists? I recently had the opportunity to ask star Carey Mulligan that very question, and while she doesn’t necessarily believe the modern context of the word fits those in the movement, she also recognizes that they put lives in danger as a result of their political actions.

The wonderful actress and star of movies such as Drive and Inside Llewyn Davis was in Los Angeles this past week, and it was during a press day for Suffragette that I was given the opportunity to sit down one-on-one with her on camera. I opened the conversation asking about the way she processed the movie’s approach to the question of whether or not the ends justify the means, and followed up by asking if she thinks it’s going too far to call her character, Maud Watts, a terrorist. She explained,

Carey Mulligan’s Maud is the fictional central character of Suffragette, portrayed as a young woman who has grown up working in a laundromat and whose one light in life is her young son, George (Adam Michael Dodd). Though she is initially pulled into the women’s right to vote campaign by accident, she eventually finds it become one of the most important things in her life. Unfortunately, it also becomes a serious disruption, as she sees her job and family threatened by her political actions, and a special investigator put on her tail, ready and willing to take her down at any moment.

The actions taken by Emmeline Pankhurst and her followers during the suffragette movement in England are certainly controversial, but to Sarah Gavron and screenwriter Abi Morgan’s credit, it does take into account multiple perspectives. There is no denying the importance of women’s suffrage, and there’s also no questioning that the actions of Pankhurst’s group had a key impact on the issue, but the film also doesn’t shy away from the consequences and criticism of their actions. It’s definitely a well-made movie about a particularly interesting part of history, and an above-average period piece – even for the fall.

Suffragette is in theaters today, October 23rd.

On April 20th, the citizens of the United Kingdom will have reached the deadline for registering to exercise their right to vote. It's almost hard to believe that it's nearly been a century since that right was extended to women, after a long fought campaign by the Suffragettes to secure such a basic human right. That story will make its way to the big screen in Sarah Gavron's Suffragette, which we got a sneak peek at thanks to the video shown below.

The Independent revealed the UK trailer yesterday, which showcases an all star cast that boasts Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, and Brendan Gleeson, as well as Academy Awards darling Streep herself. While it's previously been reported that Streep's role is a supporting capacity at best, that's not stopped the studios from touting it in this very short ad. While she delivers the real narrative punch to Suffragette's first promotional glimpse, the atmosphere of the film is really what stars in the extremely short clip – as well as Mulligan, a fellow Academy Award nominee.

If anything, this first push for Suffragette's PR campaign can be summed up in one, extremely fitting, word: votes. While the film is being released in October in the US and UK, some might say that the promotional wheels started long before they should have. Only in this case, they'd be wrong, as the UK General Election will be taking place on May 7th and the deadline for registering to vote is, as previously mentioned, in four days. This is one of those instances where not only has history influenced a film, but the film in question is trying to influence history itself, thanks to the newly promoted hashtag #VotingMatters.

Though the Prime Minister isn't the only vote this film will obviously try to sway, as any historical biopic, or Meryl Streep flick, would by default court the golden guy that Hollywood looks up to. Considering the last time screenwriter Abi Morgan and star Meryl Streep worked together was 2011's Academy Award winning biopic The Iron Lady, who could blame the studio for embarking on an awards campaign and delaying the film's original January release date for something a little more noticeable come awards season. Those of you looking to get a leg up in your Oscar pools for 2016 may want to pencil in Meryl Streep for Best Supporting Actress, at least for the time being.

Suffragette is a biopic about history, that's trying to teach from history, while at the same time making its own little bit of movie history as it's the first film to shoot inside of the houses of Parliament. Up until now, the only way you'd really get to see the real Parliament is to either watch C-Span or to see it for yourself, without the possibility of taking photos from the inside. Clearly, the message of Suffragette is one that transcends typical regulations, so before you start plotting your next film to include a shootout in the actual House Of Lords, you might want to temper those expectations.

Forget love triangles. That's so totally 2014. How about a love quadrangle? In Thomas Hardy’s classic 1874 novel Far From The Madding Crowd, Bathsheba Everdene has her pick of three very different suitors. There's the kind-hearted sheep farmer Gabrielle Oak, the dashing and passionate Sergeant Frank Troy, and the wealthy but stern William Boldwood. Each offers love. Which one--and which life--will she choose?

In Far From The Madding Crowd's first trailer, Fox Searchlight builds this premise out with loads of mood and an eerie and enchanting song. The colors are glorious, and naturally Carey Mulligan looks lovely as Bathsheba. But let's take a closer look at her co-stars/the heroine's romantic options.

First up, that simple shepherd Gabrielle Oaks, played here by Matthias Schoenaerts, the Belgian actor who recently stared opposite Marion Cotillard in the critically acclaimed drama Rust and Bone.

Next up, On The Road's Tom Sturridge fills out the enticing uniform of Sergeant Frank Troy.

And lastly, Masters of Sex co-star Michael Sheen as older man/gentleman William Boldwood. At 45, the Welsh performer is sixteen years older than the lovely Carey Mulligan.

English ingénue Carey Mulligan broke onto the international stage in 2009 with her Academy Award-nominated turn in An Education. Since then, she's shown a passion for tackling daring dramas, from the sci-fi-infused love triangle tale Never Let Me Go to Steve McQueen's nymphomaniac character study Shame, and Nicolas Winding Refn's ultra-violent romance Drive. Now she's giving voice to the early feminist movement with her upcoming drama Suffragette.

Collider shares the first still from Suffragette, which shows Carey Mulligan in turn-of-the-century attire, raring for a fight at a "Votes for Women" rally. At her side appears to be Romola Garai, and tucked under that dreadful big hat hides Helena Bonham Carter.

Screenwriter Abi Morgan, who has previously adapted history into female-fronted dramas with The Iron Lady and The Invisible Woman, found her inspiration for Suffragette, not in the genteel upper class ladies most often associated with the movement, but with the working class women who believe peaceful protests would get them nowhere. Suffragette centers on the blue-collared women of Britain who fought ferociously to win their right to vote as the 19th century turned over to the 20th.

Carey Mulligan fronts Suffragette as Maud, a foot soldier in this battle for the right to vote. She is one of many women who will risk it all--their home, their families, their job, their safety--to confront a corrupt political system that rejects their input and as well as their demand for representation. These radical revolutionaries will turn to violence as needed.

We first reported on Suffragette earlier this year, when the history-inspired drama landed some serious star power in the form of 18-time Academy Award nominee (and three-time Academy Award-winner) Meryl Streep. Joining a cast that also boasted Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham-Carter, Romola Garai, Anne-Marie Duff, Geoff Bell, Natalie Press, Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson, Streep signed on to play Emmeline Pankhurst, who is regarded as the leader of the British suffragette movement and has come to be seen as one of the most influential people of the 20th century. With accomplishments like that, who could possibly play her but Streep?

Suffragette earned more headlines in March when it became the first film ever allowed to shoot with the hallowed walls of London's Houses of Parliament. This was a big moment, not just for the film, but also for its director Sarah Gavron, a British filmmaker acclaimed for the drama Brick Lane, and now forever a part of the U.K.'s film history.

Production has since wrapped on Suffragette, and the film slated to open in the United Kingdom on January 16th, 2015. But it's suspected that this star-studded drama that could easily speak to today's political climate could make its world premiere at one of the illustrious film festivals coming up this fall. Perhaps the Toronto International Film Festival or the New York Film Festival? We'll keep you posted.

Today Fox Searchlight Pictures begins production on their ambitious adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic 1874 novel Far From the Madding Crowd. The English author’s tale centers on a headstrong and beautiful young woman named Bathsheba Everdene, who realizes her life’s happiness depends very much on who she chooses to marry. Her suitors each come from different backgrounds. Gabrielle Oak is a sweet-hearted sheep farmer who is drawn in by her independent spirit. Frank Troy is a sexy, dashing and impulsive Sergeant, who promises passion. Lastly, William Boldwood is a wealthy, but older gentleman, who could offer her luxury at least.

Carey Mulligan, who was first considered for the role last fall, will play the feisty and fickle heroine Bathsheba. Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts, who recently co-starred with Marion Cotillard in the acclaimed romantic drama Rust and Bone, will play her shepherd Oak. English newcomer Tom Sturridge (On the Road) will be her Sergeant Troy, having won the role over Stoker star Matthew Goode. Welsh star Michael Sheen, who is best known for biopics like Frost/Nixon and vampire tales like Underworld and the Twilight series, will portray the December to her May as Boldwood. Also among the cast is rising starlet Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises) in an undisclosed role.

As Bathsheba flirts with the idea of a life with each of these suitors, the story explores the nature of passion and love, while revealing mankind’s ability to overcome hardship through resilience and perseverance. To adapt this romance-fueled drama, Fox Searchlight in conjunction with BBC Films and DNA Films hired screenwriter David Nicholls, who wrote the romance novel One Day then translated it into a script for the 2011 Lone Sherfig adaptation of the same name. Andrew Macdonald, who produced the 2010 Mulligan-fronted drama Never Let Me Go, proclaims in the press release, “David Nicholls’ script beautifully captures the heart of Hardy's original.”

Helming this promising adaptation is Dogme 95 co-founder Thomas Vinterberg. The Danish filmmaker best known for the groundbreaking drama The Celebration is an intriguing choice for this complex tale of human emotion. While his works have never become mainstream Stateside, his reputation for encouraging naturalistic performances that are deeply engaging make him an excellent choice for this endeavor. BBC producer Christine Langan adds, “David Nicholls’ smart and compelling reworking of Hardy’s classic has found its ideal counterpart in the hugely talented Thomas Vinterberg. The incomparable Carey Mulligan - the perfect Bathsheba - sits at the heart of a mouth-watering cast who will do justice to this rich and irresistible tale.”

Far From the Madding Crowd is now in production, and will shoot on location in Dorset, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London. It’s expected the drama will open in 2014. It looks like Carey Mulligan won't have to prime up her American accent again after all. Last week we heard reports that said that the Oscar-nominated ingenue was the frontrunner for the title role in the upcoming Hillary Clinton biopic Rodham, but apparently things have fallen apart in the time since.

Despite the fact that the initial report said that both Mulligan and the production were eager to make a deal work out, The Hollywood Reporter has learned from a source that Mulligan has decided to pass on the film. Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be any strict reasoning behind why she wouldn't take the part. The trade says that the actress was officially offered the lead part after a meeting with director James Ponsoldt last week, but turned it down because she is "not prepared to commit to the role at this time." Is that a scheduling conflict? Does she have a problem with the script? It's hard to say.

Set long before her time as the nation's First Lady, a New York Senator or the Secretary of State, the film is set back during the 1970s and the infamous Watergate scandal. At the time Hillary Rodham was a lawyer who was serving on the House Judiciary Committee that made the decision whether or not to impeach President Richard Nixon.

Prior to Mulligan's name coming out,Reese Witherspoon, Amanda Seyfried, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Chastain were also rumored for the film, though Chastain was quoted after that story broke saying that she wouldn't be involved with the movie.

While Mulligan won't be starring in Rodham, she does have a solid upcoming slate. This December she will be seen playing the female lead in the Coen brothers' hotly-anticipated Inside Llewyn Davis. She is also attached to star in the James Marsh-directed thriller Hold On To Me with Robert Pattinson; and Far From The Madding Crowd, the new drama from director Thomas Vinterberg.

Few filmmakers have captured America, for better or worse, in comedy or drama, as lusciously and captivatingly as The Coen Bros. Joel and Ethan Cohen have explored the American experience with fables (A Serious Man), with whimsy (O Brother, Where Art Thou?), with sadness (No Country For Old Men), with frank admiration (True Grit), and with stoner humor (The Big Lebowski). And for their next act they'll be delving into the game-changing folk music scene of the 1960s with a star-studded drama called Inside Llewyn Davis.

Set in New York City, the film centers on the titular folk singer/songwriter played by Oscar Isaac, who not long ago nabbed memorable roles in two polarizing features, Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive and Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch. Beyond scoring the lead in this Coen Bros drama, Isaac had here the opportunity to work with admired performers like Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, John Goodman, Adam Driver, F. Murray Abraham, as well as Garret Hedlund. Yet little has been leaked about this venture shot on location in New York in the tail end of 2012's winter season.

The trailer above gives us some insight into Inside Llewyn Davis, and some justification for our intense anticipation. Along with a bittersweet tone of a musician struggling to make sense of himself, his work, and life in general, we get a peak of Isaac, Mulligan, Timberlake and Goodman in action. And that cut to the title has us all the more eager to see (and hear) what Inside Llewyn Davis has in store.

Inside Llewyn Davis makes its world premiere on May 16th at the Cannes Film Festival. It will open theatrically in the US in the thick of awards season on December 6th.

For the story of one woman torn between her affection for three different suitors, The Daily Mail reports director Thomas Vinterberg is searching for three male leads that each represent three different takes on masculinity. The Danish director who recently helmed the BAFTA-nominated drama The Hunt is said to be eying Matthew Goode (Stoker) for the role of Frank Troy, a swashbuckling soldier with plenty of swagger. Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts, who recently co-starred with Marion Cotillard on the acclaimed French romance Rust and Bone, has been offered the role of Gabriel Oak, a red-blooded but kind shepherd. There's no word yet on who might play the final love interest, rich farmer William Boldwood.

Hardy's novel has been adapted several times before, perhaps most memorably starring Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, Alan Bates and Peter Finch. However, Vinterberg promises his adaptation—penned by One Day author/adapter David Nicholls—will be unlike anything audiences have seen before, promising something "raw and revolutionary" and not your typical English period piece with "lovely clothes and nice fireplaces."

Leonardo DiCaprio is currently riding yet another wave of critical acclaim, as awards nominations pile up for his performance in Django Unchained and rumors of another Oscar nomination- -and maybe even a win this time-- start getting louder and louder. But once upon a time DiCaprio would have been competing against himself for all that attention, with Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby scheduled to open opposite Django on Christmas Day. Earlier this year Warner Bros. wisely shifted Gatsby's release date to next summer, and today we're getting a new look at the film, featuring DiCaprio gazing fondly into the eyes of Carey Mulligan. After seeing his unhinged, expectations-shattering performance in Django Unchained, in which he taps into his natural boyishness to create a terrifying kind of tyrant, it's a little odd to see DiCaprio here back in leading man mod. And not just any leading man, but Gatsby, the 20th century equivalent of an American tall tale, the character who stands in for everything every American has ever hoped for and lost and never quite been able to reach. it's a huge role, and one that I have no doubt DiCaprio could nail. But it is an odd transition while we're still processing Django-- maybe it will seem more natural come next summer?

The Great Gatsby is set for release May 10 next year, and DiCaprio is joined by a stellar supporting cast, including Tobey Maguire as the narrator Nick Carraway, Isla Fisher as the philandering Myrtle Wilson, and Zero Dark Thirty co-stars Joel Edgerton and Jason Clarke as Tom Buchanan and George Wilson, respectively.

Offering poignant performances in such tender adaptations as An Education, Never Let Me Go and the upcoming Great Gatsby, English ingénue Carey Mulligan has become a hotly sought actress, particularly for period piece dramas. So, it's hardly surprising that her name is the first to emerge for consideration of a new movie version of Thomas Hardy's popular 1874 novel Far from the Madding Crowd. By all accounts, the project, which will be a co-production between Fox Searchlight and BBC Films, seems to be in the early stages of development, and yet the producers are already said to be eyeing Mulligan for the female lead Bathsheba Everdene.

The Wrap reports Dogme 95 co-founder Thomas Vinterberg, who helmed the groundbreaking Danish drama The Celebration, has entered into negotiations to direct an English-language adaptation of Hardy's romantic saga. One Day author and screenwriter David Nicholls is reportedly drafting the screenplay which—like the novel—will center on a headstrong farmer's daughter Bathsheba, who must choose between three very different suitors: a shepherd, a soldier, and a farm owner.

While it's too soon to predict how the casting will shake out, the combination of Mulligan and Vinterberg is a promising possibility. His most recent offering, The Hunt, drew honors at Cannes, including winning its leading man, Mads Mikkelsen, a Best Actor award. The influential auteur has got a gift for crafting understated yet impactful drama, and to that end Mulligan, who has managed to deliver subtle yet haunting performances even when surrounded by audacious sexual content (Shame) or intense graphic violence (Drive), seems an excellent fit. Hopefully the producers will pull whatever strings necessary to cement this compelling potential collaboration.

Everyone loves a great femme fatale, from Barbara Stanwyck's Phyllis Dietrichson in Double Idemnity to Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and now Carey Mulligan is getting the chance to join those esteemed ranks. The actress is now in talks to star in Nancy and Danny, a new dark comedy from director James Marsh.

THR, which reported the casting, says that Mulligan will star as a woman hungry for fame and fortune who failed in her big city dreams. Stuck living in a small town and desperate to get out, she devises a plan to get with her high school crush involving using a hapless man as a pawn and get-rich-quick scheme. But as is always the case with films like these, things don't exactly go as planned. Brad Inglesby, who scripted for the upcoming Scott Cooper film Out of the Furnace, wrote the screenplay.

Mulligan had an absolutely fantastic 2011, starring in two of the year's best of movies in Shame and Drive (and putting on two of the best performances of the year as well). Sadly, though, her 2012 calendar has been wiped completely clean. While she was scheduled to appear at Christmas in Baz Luhrman's The Great Gatsby - playing Daisy Buchanan - but earlier this week the movie was pushed back to fall 2013. No reason was given for the switch. With the move, however, it means that the next time we see her it will be in her first collaboration with the brilliant Coen brothers in Inside Llewyn Davis. That film will be in theaters on February 8, 2013.

If there's one thing Baz Luhrmann is known for its glamor. The romantic director behind such dazzling romances as William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Australia set the internet aflame with the sparkly and style-stuffed trailer for his next grandiose tale of love The Great Gatsby. In that marketing maneuver, it was only the poster—which alludes to wealth and the darkness beyond its glittery surface—that was subtle.

With its anachronistic soundtrack, abundance of slo-mo and in-your-face emoting, I personally found the movie's first trailer too much all around. However these new images from WWD are pulling me back into the sway of Gatsby's enchanting world of glitz and deceit.

The first image shows Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, an aspiring writer with a twisted interest in the affluent community of West Egg, Long Island, sitting happily alongside Leonardo DiCaprio's eponymous tragic figure, Jay Gatsby, a man as captivating as he is mysterious. Together at a hot spot called The Angry Diamond they appear to be taking in the entertainment, which with Luhrmann's touch is sure to be spectacular (spectacular).

Next another shot of Maguire, this time standing beside Elizabeth Debicki, who plays the sleekly elegant pro golfer Jordan Baker. This is likely a shot from one of Gatsby's party scenes, but what could they be gazing at?

Perhaps this problematic pairing? Here's DiCaprio once more, clutching to Carey Mulligan, playing the only thing the titular man of means really desires, the enigmatic and enchanting Daisy Buchanan. It'd be a lovely picture of old flames reunited…if it weren't for Daisy's furious husband, a role filled by the fire-eyed Joel Edgerton.

I’m not certain if Carey Mulligan’s young-looking face or her whirlwind of a recent romance makes her marriage more surprising. It’s true we’ve all known Mulligan has been engaged to professional crooner and head of the popular band Mumford and Sons since August, but something about the couple’s hasty five months together made me wonder if the whole wedding thing might be put off at some point.

As it turns out, I should have a little more faith in young love. Mulligan and Marcus Mumford were married this weekend in Somerset, England. With such a picturesque farm setting and a fairly small and personal ceremony, Mulligan, 26, and Mumford, 25, were wed in relative peace and avoidance of popular hullabaloo. US Weekly broke the news and also learned Colin Firth, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Sienna Miller were in attendance to watch the actor and musician exchange their vows.

The couple began spending time together initially at an intimate music gig with mutual friends in 2011. They have been inseparable since, with Mulligan moving all the way to London to live with her beau early in their relationship. With such a private courtship and such a secluded wedding, it’s doubtful Mulligan and Mumford will be popping up all over the tabloids in the coming years. As such, Pop Blend would like to wish the couple our best now, and during their romance in the future.

Looking in earnest for the perfect Nora Charles, the lauded Chicago director will begin meeting next week with a long list of leading ladies, including: Eva Green, Amy Adams, Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, Kristen Wiig, Emily Blunt and Isla Fisher. Weisz is still in the mix, but now she's got some serious competition.

While each of the women above is beautiful and talented, the range in age and type here is slightly bewildering. In the original Thin Man film series, it was the elegant yet cute and warmly funny Myrna Loy who played Nora, the loving wife and willing partner-in-crime of William Powells' Nick Charles, a private investigator turned man of leisure who returns to his sleuthing roots when a curious mystery falls before him. It was a spirited premise that spun into five sequels, each throwing the banter-loving married couple into a new, comedy-laced adventure. And with a hero who is equal parts eccentricity and savvy, it's no surprise Depp has been pushing hard for The Thin Man's resurrection.

Now, let's parse through these casting possibilities. While Stone (Easy A) and Mulligan (Drive) are wonderfully charismatic and deservedly popular ingénues, at 23 and a baby-faced 26 respectively, they look too young to play the wife of 48-year-old Depp without things getting creepy. Of course Hollywood typically loves pairing older men with much younger women, but this is still an uncomfortable stretch. Even Powell was only 13 years Loy's senior. However, as I'd love to see either actress make her way into this comedy, let's hope Marshall is also looking to cast a younger woman for a yet-to-be revealed role.

As the for the rest, Green and Fisher seem to have a slight advantage as each has played a Depp love interest before, the former in the upcoming Dark Shadows and the latter in Gore Verbinski's animated adventure Rango. Yet Adams has never faltered as a winsome comedic performer and possesses an impressive resume filled with rollicking romances like Enchanted. Still, her Muppets co-star Blunt is better regarded for portrayals of sharp and sassy heroines, and so seems a wonderful fit for Nora. Of course, Wiig has shown a wacky appreciation for classic female character types on a variety of Saturday Night Live sketches and it would be intriguing to see her paired with Depp. Still, it's hard to shake the idea of the ever-graceful Weisz, who was silly while charming in The Brothers Bloom, as the enviably glamorous yet game Mrs. Charles.

Basically, it's difficult to predict who will walk away with the coveted role of Nora Charles. But lucky for us, Marshall has an embarrassment of riches to choose from, and none of the above would be a bad choice for to play Depp's marvelous better half.

Michael Fassbender earned rave reviews playing a struggling sex addict in Steve McQueen's (not that one) provocative film Shame. Unfortunately, if you don't live in a major city and don't frequent film festivals, there's a very good chance that you never had the chance to see it. The film pulls no punches when it comes to its subject matter, and was slapped with an NC-17 rating. While the filmmakers largely embraced the rating, it still means there are many theaters that wouldn't show it. If you missed Shame and have been curious about what all the hubbub is about, it's hitting shelves as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on April 17th.

Wow, I was expecting some sort of bonus feature where Fassbender walks around fully clothed. You know, just for the novelty of it.

Shame stars Michael Fassbender as Brandon, a New Yorker whose entire life revolves around his addiction to sex. His life is thrown for a loop when his younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves in with him, forcing them both to confront painful memories of their past. The film was critically praised, with Fassbender receiving a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

Today Nicolas Winding Refn's controversial crime-drama Drive makes its debut on Blu-ray and DVD. To celebrate Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has unleashed the film's first seven minutes, available below courtesy of Coming Soon:

Drive stars tumblr-loved leading man Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver. This premise--along with a deceptive marketing campaign--led many moviegoers last fall to expect Drive to be an action-packed flick in the vein of the high-octane Fast and the Furious franchise. However, rather than a full-throttle car-chase extravaganza, Drive is a meditative and moody exploration of a star-crossed romance between Gosling's driver and a young mother played by rising starlet Carey Mulligan, a love story that is occasionally punctuated with grisly violence. While this misconception helped boost Drive's opening weekend numbers, it also spurred some furious patrons to pursue a class-action lawsuit against the feature's distributor, FilmDistrict, claiming they had been purposely misled to buy their tickets.

Perhaps Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is looking to set the record straight by releasing the film's opening to the web. In this clip we're introduced to Gosling's enigmatic stuntman, his rules for getaway driving, his car-savvy cohort played by Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston, and the beginnings of the chase featured in the film's trailer. Notably, here the heist isn't pumped up with a slick and chilly soundtrack. Instead, Gosling's silent driver is the picture of calm as the sharp ticking of the clock pronounces the soon-to-close window for his work. Cleverly, the clip cuts off just as the getaway literally kicks into high gear, teasing viewers with just a taste of what Drive has in store.

Both the Drive Blu-ray and DVD include four behind-the-scenes featurettes, as well as an interview with the film's director, Nicolas Winding Refn. The Blu-ray also offers an UltraViolet Digital Copy. Available now.

After numerous glimpses at the set of The Great Gatsby, we’re finally getting a small peek at the finished product. This comes in the form of two promotional photos released by Warner Bros, which show us a few of the main characters from Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel.

Last month we posted photos, which showed Tobey Maguire, Leonardio DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan in costume on the set of the film. They’re looking even better in the new photos that were released for the movie.

Sassisamblog.com posted the photos below, which feature Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, and Joel Edgerton as Tom Buchanan.

Mulligan and DiCaprio are looking gloomy but cozy together in the first photo, and it’s hard to tell, but it seems like Gatsby has his eyes on the well accessorized Daisy in the second one, while everyone else is watching something else. It's worth noting that, with the exception of what barely qualifies as a smile from Maguire, no one's looking very happy in these photos, regardless of what appears to be a party setting in the second one. That's fitting though, given the story and all of the drama that awaits.

Carey Mulligan’s riding one of the hottest streaks we’ve seen in some time. She regularly works with challenging directors, from Oliver Stone (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps) to Mark Romanek (Never Let Me Go). This year, she’s co-starring in two instant classics in Drive and Shame. And she’s currently hard at work on Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby opposite Leonard DiCaprio.

Wow.

But don’t think Mulligan’s content to rest on her laurels. Variety reports that the actress has secured two high-profile gigs that would make any talent salivate. The fact that she's in both almost isn’t fair. According to the trade, Mulligan will be the female lead in Joel and Ethan Coen’s folk-music drama Inside Llewyn Davis. Following that, she’ll appear in an as-yet-untitled feature to be directed by Spike Jonze.

Both projects sound great. The Coens already have cast Oscar Isaac as a musician breaking into New York’s scene in the 1960s. As the trade notes, if Mulligan needs to sing, Shame proves the actress has the pipes. As for Jonze’s feature, it reportedly reunites him with screenwriter Charlie Kaufmann (Adaptation) for a film about global leaders having to meet to discuss what Variety calls “cataclysmic events.” Joaquin Phoenix has already been cast in the picture, which would begin shooting next spring.

About the only other actress touching Mulligan’s streak right now is Anne Hathaway, who also continues to add one major project after the next. Actors rarely go wrong collaborating with storytellers like the Coens and Jonze, and we’re happy that a legitimate talent like Mulligan is getting these outstanding chances to flex her muscle and make what we hope are great films.

After some false alarms and what seemed like an endless processing of casting and rehearsals, Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby is finally going to start shooting, and sooner than I expected. According to The New Zealand Herald, filming will start in March in Sydney, Australia, going for 17 weeks and lasting for an incredible 30 weeks of post-production, all taking place in Australia. Yes, a small-scale drama set on New York's Long Island has now become a massive effort shooting in Australia and employing 150 people to work on post-production and visual effects alone. An it's being made by the man whose last film, Australia, cost a fortune and made virtually no money. Baz Luhrmann, bless him, is a man for whom the word "small" has no meaning.

The film will also be shot in 3D, marking the first time stars Leonardo DiCaprio (as Gatsby), Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway) and Carey Mulligan (Daisy) have ever worked in the format. It is, in other words, absolutely not going to be the Gatsby you read in high school, though what it will be seems totally unclear. At this point, with Luhrmann clearly running off on his own tangent about what he wants the movie to be, I'm kind of excited to see how wild his vision will be. F. Scott Fitzgerald's book, beloved and studied by generations of English students, is what it is, and Luhrmann's film is clearly going to be something newer, wilder, and different. Sure, it may be a disaster, but it'll be original-- or as original as an adaptation can be, I guess.

The My Fair Lady movie musical that's been rumored for years now is back in the news again, with Carey Mulligan once again up for the Eliza Doolittle role, but a new, seriously exciting name attached to Henry Higgins. According to The Daily Mail's Baz Bamigboye-- someone with much more reliable information than you usually see from UK tabloid rumors, it's worth noting-- Colin Firth is back in the running to play the Professor in the project in the works at Sony. Firth had been a favorite of producers Duncan Kenworthy and Cameron Mackintosh years ago, but the studio reportedly wanted someone more famous along the lines of Hugh Grant. Now, of course, Firth is a guaranteed Best Actor winner and star of the hugely successful The King's Speech, and fickle Sony wants him back.

The main problem at the moment has nothing to do with the actors-- Mulligan is still on board as well, and apparently has time in her schedule-- but with mountains of legal paperwork. CBS Films has the rights, but some of them are about to turn back to the heirs of the musical's writers; also involved are the estates of George Bernard Shaw and Gabriel Pascal, who wrote the play Pygmalion that the musical was based on. Emma Thompson, who wrote the new screenplay, reportedly drew from Shaw's work, which makes the thicket of legal issues all the more complicated.

Regardless, Sony clearly sees this as a potential moneymaker, and will likely marshall their considerable resources toward getting all these issues cleared up. Firth is up for pretty much any role he wants these days, and will spend the spring starring opposite Cameron Diaz in the caper comedy Gambit, but come on, we all know he's perfect for Henry Higgins and he probably does too. The man deserves a better role in a musical than the completely loony one he played in Mamma Mia!, and with Mulligan as his co-star, it's hard to imagine an opportunity much better than this one.

If the word that Carey Mulligan was Baz Luhrmann's top choice to play Daisy in his adaptation of The Great Gatsby sounded just about perfect, there's good reason: Luhrmann has confirmed to Deadline that Mulligan has indeed snagged the part, having broken the news to her earlier tonight.

Luhrmann also provided a photo of Mulligan in full Daisy makeup (seen at right), snapped during the screen tests that were shown to the presidents of Sony earlier today. Still, despite the fact that Mulligan is now set to star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby and Tobey Maguire (probably) as Nick Carraway, Luhrmann says he's not 100% sure that Gatsby will be next for him, despite how much fun he had meeting with a long list of actresses to find Daisy:

The best part of all of this may be that Luhrmann called Mulligan on her phone while she was walking the red carpet at the Fashion Council Awards, causing her to burst into tears in front of the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Anna Wintour. Given how many photographers typically flank these carpets, isn't it only a matter of time before we see shots of Mulligan sobbing into her cell phone? I think that would actually be pretty endearing, if not a little overly private.

As much as I'm convinced that there really can't be a good adaptation of The Great Gatsby for the screen-- it's a perfect novel much more for its writing style than the plot itself-- it's good to see Luhrmann at least assembling a fantastic cast. I can't wait to see the self-possessed and whip-smart Mulligan inhabit the likes of the flighty, shallow Daisy, and especially to see DiCaprio's Gatsby moon over her from the distance across the sound. OK, I'll admit-- I might be excited for this movie despite all the reasons I know to be skeptical. Good casting has that effect on me, I guess.
