While I was born more than a decade after The Sound of Music hit theaters in 1965, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer was one of my favorites as a child. Rather, I should say the first half was. The political plotline involving the Third Reich’s annexation of Austria flew right over my young head like the absurd little bird the von Trapp children sing about. So I decided to rewatch the classic as an adult to enjoy both the sweet singing family and the more serious subject matter. Here are 32 thoughts I had while doing so. 

Maria's Entrance Is Nothing Short Of Epic 

That gorgeous helicopter footage of the Alps never fails to impress during The Sound of Music’s opening credits. Maria is merely an ant against the vast backdrop as she appears on the hill, with the camera zooming all the way in before she sings the titular song. Iconic! Apparently that scene was super hard to film, but totally worth it, in my opinion. 

How Far Was The Abbey From Maria’s Mountain? 

I didn’t see any abbeys in those aerial views of Maria’s mountain, so when the bells started ringing, just how far did Maria have to run to get back? I hope Julie Andrews didn’t have to do too many takes. 

Some Of The Nuns’ Complaints Seem Awfully Petty 

I’m not arguing that there were some legitimate concerns regarding Maria becoming a nun, but some of those sisters were unnecessarily harsh. “She climbs a tree and scrapes her knee.” Really, that makes her an actual demon?  

Is The Sound Of Music The Best Sing-Along Movie Ever? 

From beginning to end, I joined in on all of the tunes, which were all gorgeously performed by the cast. If there’s a better sing-along movie, I certainly can’t think of it after that experience. 

Maria Pretending She’s At A Ball Is So Relatable 

Maria’s used to a life of minimalism, so of course the first thing she does after being shown to the ballroom of Georg von Trapp’s large estate is pretend she’s at a lavish affair, bowing fancily to other imaginary partygoers.  

Julie Andrews And Christopher Plummer’s Chemistry Is Electric In Their First Exchange 

Georg is steely but clever. Maria is sassy but well-meaning. I’m obsessed with every bit of this first meeting, from her dead-panning that “the poor didn’t want this one” when asked about her dress to blowing her whistle at him to say she didn’t know his signal. 

Did Captain Von Trapp Really Have A Whistle Call For Each Of His Children? 

Maria was right when she said the captain using a whistle to call her and the children was “humiliating.” This movie is, of course, based on a real-life family, so was the whistle a fictionalized detail or did Georg really do this? I think I need to read Maria von Trapp’s memoir. 

Rolfe Is So Much Trouble 

I may be biased against Rolfe since I know how the movie ends, but only a 17-year-old boy could think he’s so much wiser about the ways of the world than 16-year-old Liesl, or anyone else for that matter.  

Liesl And Rolfe’s Gazebo Dance Is No Joke 

I never fully appreciated the choreography of Liesl and Rolfe’s dance in the gazebo during the rainstorm, twirling together and stepping up and down on the benches. Even the hopping from bench to bench as they ran around the circle looked so graceful. 

The Curtain Clothes Are Still Adorable 

I was always strangely jealous of the green, patterned play clothes Maria made for the von Trapp children from the old curtains in her bedroom. No two outfits were the same, either. This nun-turned-governess really has so many skills. (Those outfits ended up being worth a small fortune, and I can’t say I’m surprised.) 

The Do-Re-Mi Song Really Oversimplifies Learning To Sing 

I can sing all of those words in that order, but no pneumonic device in this world is good enough to make the right note come out of my mouth. 

Standing Ovation For The Do-Re-Mi Choreography 

When you think of The Sound of Music, you think of “Do-Re-Mi.” It’s iconic, and the choreography should be part of the reason why. Just look at what these eight actors are being asked to do. They are doing choreography while riding bikes, pedaling faster or slower to change formation (I’m not surprised the young Gretl actress rode on the back of Julie Andrews’ bike). Then, at the end, the staircase portion includes the kids jumping backward to the steps below on cue without looking, before running up and down and ultimately lining up at the top of the stairs. 

Georg Von Trapp And The Baroness Are Kind Of Cute Together

After seeing how strict the captain was with Maria and the children, I love how much he loosened up around his pal Max and especially the Baroness Elsa von Schraeder. They are actually kind of cute together, Georg looking all smitten. I love that dichotomy from Christopher Plummer.

What’s Up With Max And The Baroness? 

I never picked up on it before, but Max and Elsa seemed to be thick as thieves when Georg wasn’t around, scheming to get Georg and Elsa engaged and joking about her fortune. I love the fun and flirty repartee, but am I missing something more? 

When Von Trapp Calls Maria ‘Captain’ 

Captain von Trapp got so flustered during his heated argument with Maria that when she said, “I am not finished yet, Captain,” he replied, “Oh yes you are, Captain … fraulein.” The looks they exchanged afterward were priceless, as she looked shocked and he was so embarrassed.

Von Trapp’s Face When He Hears His Children Singing Is Sob-Worthy 

All the fury from Capt. Von Trapp's argument with Maria was instantly dissolved when he heard his children’s angelic voices singing to Max and the Baroness. I swear in that moment his grief for his wife was palpable, as was the regret of how he he'd treated his kids. That moment instantly changed him forever.  

I’m Convinced Maria Is A Robot 

There is nothing this woman can’t do. She instantly won over children who had run off a billion nannies before her, made all of their clothes from scratch, taught them to sing and then turned them into a whole musical act, and then got their father to completely change his parenting style. I’m supposed to buy all that, AND believe she put together that marionette show? She’s definitely not a human woman. 

The Baroness Is So Deliciously Evil 

I love how you can see the Baroness watching all of Georg and Maria’s interactions with such a knowing eye. The differences between her and Maria are never more obvious than at the party, when she follows Maria into her bedroom. The baroness is in her expensive gown and Maria in just her undergarments as Elsa casually mentions that she can tell Maria and von Trapp love each other, knowing that will drive the governess away. So cruel yet so brilliant. 

‘Only Grown-Up Men Are Scared Of Women’ 

Wise words from Kurt when Louisa said he only thought the women at the party looked ugly because he was scared of them. 

Intermission, AKA, When Younger Me Used To Turn The Movie Off 

Maria’s gone, the Nazis are coming and the best songs have been sung. But let’s be honest, what really kept me from watching the second half of The Sound of Music more often than not was having to get up to change the VHS to the second cassette. I know, I’m dating myself and making myself look lazy, but facts are facts. 

Ouch, Not The Reaction You Want When You Tell The Kids They’re Getting A New Mother 

I’ve never seen seven sadder cheek kisses than the ones the von Trapp children give the Baroness when her engagement to their father is announced. And they didn’t even hear her say she was shipping them off to boarding school! 

The Plot Moves So Fast In This Movie 

For a three-hour movie, the plot really rolls along at a lightning quick pace. No time is wasted convincing the children to love Maria at the beginning; they just do. The captain is instantly on board with raising the kids musically, and sure, Maria went back to the abbey, but the Reverend Mother didn’t exactly have to twist her arm to get her to return to von Trapp. 

‘It’s No Use, You And I’ 

As soon as Maria comes back, it’s all over for Georg. He can’t even hide his love anymore, and I loved this breakup scene between him and Elsa, with him telling her, “It’s no use, you and I.” Her acknowledgement of his love for Maria was also amazing and elicited the best reaction from Georg after she said, “And somewhere out there is a young lady who I think will never be a nun.” 

They Got Engaged On The Same Night?! 

I know I said things happened quickly in this movie, but this is wild. Georg had been single for all of 20 minutes before he not only professed his love for Maria but asked her to marry him! He broke off an engagement, then got re-engaged in the same night! 

Are The Nuns Really Singing ‘How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?’ At Her Wedding? 

Maria is shown walking down the aisle in one of the most gorgeous movie weddings of all time, to the tune of an entire choir singing, “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?” Show me a bride who wants to be called a "problem" on their wedding day! If you can’t sing something nice, just go with “Here Comes the Bride.” These are truly some salty sisters. 

It Feels Like The Movie Should End Here 

Maria found her home with the von Trapps, the Baroness is no longer in the picture, the seven children have a loving mother and father again. And they all lived happily ever after. Right? Nope, bring on the Nazis. 

Georg And Maria Honeymooned For A Month? 

Not only did Georg and Maria leave the seven children for a whole month to celebrate their newlyweddedness, but they left Max in charge? What are his child-rearing qualifications? Did Georg really think if he were left to his own devices for that long that Max WASN’T going to enter the children into the music festival? 

What A Terrible Welcome Home Gift 

I guess it’s a good thing they honeymooned for a month, because Georg and Maria returned to news that he was being made to join the navy of the Third Reich the next day. He instead made the choice to pack up the whole family and make a run for it. What a test for their young marriage. 

Exactly How Big Is Max’s Music Festival? 

Max talked a fair amount about his music festival and finding the best acts for it, but I never realized what a huge deal it was until he announced the winner as “the highest honor in all of Austria.” That seems hyperbolic. 

How Did We Get Here? 

Remember when we were skipping across the fields in the Alps, wearing our curtain outfits, pretending to drink tea? It was a simpler time. It’s hard to believe that was the same movie as where we are now — in a dark cemetery with 17-year-old Rolfe pointing a gun at Captain von Trapp. 

The Nuns Sabotaged The Nazis’ Cars! 

We always knew these nuns were feisty. I guess they decided there are worse things than girls who are always late for everything (except for every meal). 

I Can’t Believe The Von Trapp Family Is Actually Hoofing It Over The Mountain To Get To Freedom 

With the borders closed, the von Trapp party of nine escaped Austria on foot, actually climbing through the Alps to reach Switzerland. That’s pretty extreme, and I love how the movie ends how it began, with Maria on the mountain. But she's no longer alone.

It’s easy to see why The Sound of Music won five Academy Awards and why it remains a favorite so many decades later. It’s certainly one of Julie Andrews’ best movies, even if Christopher Plummer admitted to hating the film for being “so awful and sentimental and gooey.” Forgive me, Captain, but I’d have to disagree. 

As much as we like to see Hollywood as a dream factory, some projects can be total nightmares. Maybe people realize that fact during production, or maybe it’s a big case of hindsight providing 20/20 vision; but eventually there comes a time when an entertainer decides that their own movie is the enemy. For one reason or another, the list we’re about to share with you is a bunch of cases where that sort of takedown was warranted by the talent that had to endure making them in the first place. 

Jamie Lee Curtis - Virus

No matter how many times the 1999 sci-fi horror movie Virus comes up, it seems that Jamie Lee Curtis has a colorful variety of responses that detail just how flat-out horrible the finished product was. And depending on which interview you read, the language can get just as cheeky, so reader discretion is definitely advised.

Despite his misgivings, the Rodgers and Hammerstein adaptation remains one of Christopher Plummer’s best roles. 

Sally Field - The Amazing Spider-Man

Viola Davis - The Help

Despite the contemporary hoopla that saw The Help become an Academy Awards darling at 2012’s Oscars, Viola Davis’ opinion on the movie is far from golden. Indeed, the project has become more and more scrutinized as time goes on, and Davis’ upset with the movie has only developed more nuance over time. 

Ryan Reynolds - Green Lantern

Even if you knew nothing about Ryan Reynolds starring in the much-maligned Green Lantern adaptation, his dislike for the picture is legendary. Especially when part of Deadpool 2’s wild time travel-correcting ending saw the Marvel anti-hero icing his reality-bound actor before even getting to make the film. 

Halle Berry - Catwoman

The downside to Halle Berry being in Catwoman is that she, unfortunately, had to actually make the movie. However, the upside to this painful experience is that Berry’s quips and jabs at her unfortunate DC Comics entry continue to show her impeccable sense of humor. 

Oscar Isaac - X-Men: Apocalypse

While Oscar Isaac doesn’t outright disown his X-Men movie, he does express serious regret for taking on the titular role in X-Men: Apocalypse. Though if you were cast to act up against James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, only to have your abilities hampered by an abundance of prosthetics, you’d probably be pretty steamed too. 

Dame Judi Dench - Cats

Not many actors would consider a Razzie nomination entertaining, or even valid. But then again, Cats' Dame Judi Dench isn't "most actors." Proud to have not seen the film, or read its reviews, the famed performer laughed off her own nomination, and even compared her character's final look to a bunch of foxes engaged in some not-so-family-friendly activity. 

Matt Damon - The Bourne Ultimatum

For as much cultural cache as the Jason Bourne movies still have in the world, it’s kind of astounding that the subpar reaction to some of the sequels doesn’t seem to have dampened that pedigree. That’s an especially good question after Matt Damon’s trashing of The Bourne Ultimatum script somehow didn’t prevent the worst sin that franchise has committed, 2016’s Jason Bourne. 

Megan Fox - Transformers

Megan Fox’s relationship with the Transformers franchise saw her putting the Hasbro toy franchise on blast after the release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. More specifically, her comments comparing Michael Bay to Hitler allegedly helped distance her even further from the series that she apparently has no particular love for. 

Matthew Goode - Leap Year

In remarks to The Telegraph about his role in the rom-com Leap Year, Matthew Goode fully admitted that the Amy Adams starring vehicle wasn’t exactly ideal for his tastes. Taking a page out of Michael Caine’s proverbial book on silver linings, Goode did admit that one of the reasons he did enjoy being part of the project was the fact that he could go home easily on the weekends. 

Kate Winslet - Titanic

While the world fell in love with Kate Winslet after her role in Titanic, the actor herself didn’t exactly love watching herself put in, what she feels, was a performance full of errors. Even in a legacy interview with CNN, Winslet criticized everything, even her American accent.  

Mark Wahlberg - Boogie Nights

Boogie Nights was a star making performance for Mark Wahlberg, and to this day it’s a role that’s aged well on his resume. And yet, Wahlberg has asked God to forgive him for making the Paul Thomas Anderson masterpiece, regarding it the biggest mistake of his career. 

Michelle Pfeiffer - Grease 2

Allegedly, Michelle Pfeiffer was cited to have chalked up her experience with Grease 2 as a case of being young and not knowing how to pick a good script. While those stories persist, Pfieffer has apparently started to set the record straight, attributing her supposed Grease sequel bashing to misreported remarks that grew a life of their own.

Sir Alec Guinness - Star Wars

While Sir Alec Guinness’ reaction to watching Star Wars was one of being refreshed, his outlook on taking the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn’t as rosy. Actually making George Lucas’ sci-fi opus was a different story, with Guinness’ on-set feelings seeing the legendary actor less than pleased in the middle of production.

Miriam Margolyes - The Harry Potter Series

Harry Potter fans have been a frequent source of discussion for actor Miriam Margolyes. The performer who brought Madame Sprout to live in the film adaptation of the series not only has no personal connection with the franchise but she’s also shared some thoughts on adult Potter fans that have kicked up more dirt than one of her Herbology classes.

Sylvester Stallone - Stop, Or My Mom Will Shoot!

The widely reported story of how Sylvester Stallone became the action lead in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot! is thanks to his feud with action star Arnold Schwarzenegger. Apparently, Arnie tricked him into thinking he wanted the movie, which led Stallone to lobby for the part, and win it. His enduring torment can still be heard to this day, and Sly has even suggested the film as a form of interrogation enhancement. Yikes.

Dakota Johnson - Madame Web

Madame Web seems to be an experience that barely anyone enjoyed, even the actors who starred in the movie. Dakota Johnson’s skewering of the finished product, while extremely erudite and empathetic towards herself and the rest of the cast, cuts to the core problems that some feel superhero movies have possessed since day one. 

Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Out of all the Harry Potter movies Daniel Radcliffe has fronted, the one that comes in as his least favorite is the sixth entry, The Half Blood Prince. Radcliffe called his own performance “one-note,” especially when compared to his own personal favorite: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Jennifer Aniston - Leprechaun

Jennifer Aniston’s performance in Leprechaun makes her cringe to this day. So much so that in a 2019 interview on The Howard Stern Show, she mentioned that she tried and failed to stop her then-boyfriend Justin Theroux from watching the film; much to her dismay. 

Brad Pitt - The Devil’s Own

“20 pages of dog…” You can fill that phrase in for yourself, but Brad Pitt’s Newsweek interview about 1997’s The Devil’s Own said all that needed to be said about the actor’s feelings for the Harrison Ford co-starring drama. 

Sandra Bullock - Speed 2: Cruise Control

Some experience will stick with you, no matter how hard you try. Sandra Bullock’s no-sequel rule was an echo of such a trauma, thanks to her displeasure with Speed 2: Cruise Control. Admittedly, her concerns about a large cruise ship not being as perceptively speedy as a city bus were part of the equation as well, and can you blame her? 

Robert Pattinson - Twilight

Robert Pattinson’s hate affair with the Twilight Saga is as well-documented as the memes that have committed the franchise’s dialogue to memory. Thankfully, the man didn’t develop an aversion to bats, otherwise The Batman wouldn’t have happened; which is probably one of the best things that actually came out of Twilight when you think about it.

We hope that you’ve enjoyed this trip in the trenches with stars who had to tell it like it is. Judging by some of the movies mentioned here, it might be safe to say that for the most part, these reactions were spot on. In fact, several eclipsed the century mark before crossing over into the great unknown. These titans of the movie industry, actors and directors behind Best Picture winners, and staples of the small screen all have one thing in common, besides being beloved by millions, their longevity.

Here are 32 Hollywood stars that lived to be more than 90. 

Sean Connery

Sean Connery, the iconic actor best known for playing James Bond in several of the best 007 movies, lived to the age of 90 years, two months, and six days before passing away on Halloween in 2020. Upon his death, the BBC said he left behind a tremendous body of work and a vacancy for the title of “Greatest Living Scot.”

Betty White 

Trailblazing comedian and cherished American treasure Betty White passed away on December 31, 2021, just a few weeks before the Golden Girls star and recurring guest on The Carol Burnett Show would have turned 100, per CNN. In her 99 years on the Earth, White lived life to the fullest to say the very least.

Carl Reiner

Carl Reiner, one of the most well-known and successful names in all of show business, lived to the age of 98 before dying in June 2020, leaving behind a massive body of work stretching decades, according to the New York Times. From creating shows like The Dick Van Dyke Show to a long-lasting partnership with Mel Brooks to stealing scenes in the Ocean’s movies, he had quite a legacy.

Cicely Tyson 

Cicely Tyson, the dynamic actress that won a Tony, multiple Emmys, an honorary Oscar, and dozens of other accolades, was 96 years old when she died in January 2021, according to the New York Times. Over the course of a seven-decade career, Tyson gave commanding performances in film, television, and on Broadway.

Tony Bennett

Though known mostly for his decades-long music career that saw him earn countless awards, honors, and other accolades, Tony Benett made several film and TV appearances throughout his life. Sadly, the legendary crooner passed away at the age of 98 in July 2023, per the New York Times.

Kirk Douglas

Kirk Douglas, the star of classics like Paths of Glory, The Bad and the Beautiful, and most famously, Spartacus, passed away in February 2020, per the New York Times. The Hollywood star lived to the age of 103. 

Mickey Rooney

One of the brilliant Hollywood stars lost in 2014, Mickey Rooney was 93 years old at the time of his death, which marked the end to one of the most prolific and tumultuous careers in all of show business, according to the New York Times. Throughout his 88-year career, Rooney appeared in more than 300 movies and reinvented himself time and time again.

Katharine Hepburn

Katharine Hepburn, who won a record four Academy Awards throughout her career, and was 96 years old at the time of her death in June 2003. At that time, the Washington Post described her as an actress of breathtaking talent and unsurpassed durability. 

Sidney Poitier 

Trailblazing actor Sidney Poitier, who became the first Black performer to win an Oscar for Best Actor, lived to the age of 94 years old before passing away in June 2022, per the New York Times. Throughout his career, Poitier appeared in films like Lillies of the Field, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and In the Heat of the Night to name only a few. Several of Poitier’s best movies could also be considered touchstones of American cinema.

Bob Hope

After spending decades entertaining millions upon millions with his various Broadway, radio, television, and movies, not to mention his tireless efforts bringing laughter to troops stationed around the world, Bob Hope passed away in July 2003. According to the Los Angeles Times, the later entertainer was 100 years old at the time of his passing.

Gloria Stuart

Gloria Stuart, the older Rose from James Cameron’s 1997 romantic epic, Titanic, passed away in July 2010. According to the Los Angeles Times, the veteran actress died just two days after her 100th birthday.

Zsa Zsa Gabor 

Hollywood legend Zsa Zsa Gabor, known for her work in For the First Time, Moulin Rouge, Lovely to Look At, We’re Not Married, and dozens upon dozens of other projects, passed away in December 2016. According to Variety, the actress, who dazzled on the silver screen for 60 years, was 99 years old at the time of her death.

Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury, best known for starring roles in Beauty and the Beast and Murder, She Wrote among others, was 96 years old at the time of her death in October 2022, according to the Guardian. In his obituary published by the New York Times, Burns was described as a cigar-smoking comedian considered to be the best “straight man” in the world of comedy. Over the course of his decades-spanning career, Burns performed on TV, in sold out clubs and theaters, and pretty much anywhere else where audiences would watch his trademark routines.

Bob Barker 

Bob Barker, the longtime host of The Price is Right, Happy Gilmore star, and advocate for spaying and neutering your pets, lived to be 99 years old before he passed away in August 2023, per TMZ. The TV and Hollywood icon was just four months shy of his 100th birthday at the time of his death, a passing that was met with an emotional response from his fans. Dozens of celebrities took to social media in the wake of his passing to share stories about working with the iconic figure, including Adam Sandler with whom he had a funny ongoing feud.

Ed Asner 

Ed Asner, who starred on shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Roots, as well as movies like Up and Elf, was 91 at the time of his passing in August 2021, per The Hollywood Reporter. The late actor left behind a massive body of work and lasting legacy we’ll feel for years, if not decades, to come.

Doris Day

American actress and singer Doris Day passed away in May 2019 just weeks after her 97th birthday, per the New York Times. The star of Alfred Hitchcock thrillers (The Man Who Knew Too Much), all-time great romantic comedies (Pillow Talk), and her own sitcom (The Doris Day Show), Day was one of the most talented and prolific Hollywood stars of her time.

Billy Wilder

Billy Wilder, one of the most iconic and impactful directors in the history of Hollywood, lived to the age of 95 before passing away in March 2002, according to CNN. Known for movies like Some Like It Hot, Double Indemnity, Sabrina, and most famously, Sunset Boulevard, the late filmmaker gave moviegoers some of the most unforgettable moments throughout his career.

Harry Dean Stanton

Harry Dean Stanton, one of the greatest character actors of all time, passed away in September 2017, according to the New York Times. He was 91 years old at the time of his passing. Stanton, whose work ranged from Alien to Paris, Texas, and dozens upon dozens of other great films, was one of a kind.

Ennio Morricone

After spending decades crafting some of the most well-known film scores in the history of Hollywood, composer Ennio Morricone passed away at the age of 91 in July 2020, per the New York Times. Throughout his unparalleled career, Morricone created unforgettable moments in everything from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and so much in between.

Joan Fontaine

Joan Fontaine, who appeared in classics like Rebecca and Suspicion and so much more, passed away in December 2013. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she was 96 at the time of her death.

Harry Morgan

Best known for his portrayal of Col. Sherman T. Potter on the long-running sitcom M*A*S*H, Emmy Award-winning actor Harry Morgan lived to be 96 years of age before he passed away in December 2011, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Christopher Plummer

Following a decades-spanning career that saw him take major roles in The Sound of Music, Beginners, and Knives Out, passed away in February 2021. According to Variety, the multi-talented actor and Oscar winner was 91 years old at the time of his death.

Jerry Lewis

A comedian that was great in dramatic roles, Jerry Lewis lived to be 91 years old before his death in August 2021, according to Variety. Throughout his career, Lewis appeared in everything from The Nutty Professor to The King of Comedy, and so much more.

Phyllis Diller

After spending most of her life serving as one of the funniest, sassiest, and most prolific comedians in show business, Phyllis Diller passed away in August 2012. In her obituary published by the New York Times, Phyllis was credited with inspiring two generations of female comedians by breaking through doors, ceilings, and just about everything else to make her voice heard. She was 95 years old at the time of her passing.

Hal Holbrook

Hal Holbrook, who spent decades perfecting his craft in film, television, and his long-running one-man stage show about Mark Twain, lived to the age of 95, before passing away in February 2021, according to the New York Times. Throughout his career, he appeared in movies like All the President’s Men, Into the Wild, and Lincoln, to name just a few.

Ernest Borgnine

Ernest Borgnine lived to be 95 years of age, until his death in July 2012, per The Hollywood Reporter. The legendary actor appeared in countless film and television projects throughout his career and even won an Oscar for his performance in Delbert Mann’s 1955 romantic drama, Marty.

Maureen O'Hara

After spending a career dazzling audiences in movies like Miracle on 34th Street, How Green Was My Valley, and The Foxes of Harrow, Maureen O’Hara passed away in October 2014 when she was 95, according to USA Today.

Jerry Stiller

Jerry Stiller passed away in May 2020 -- the beloved comedian, Seinfeld star, and father of actor Ben Stiller was 92. Over the course of his legendary career in show business, Stiller found success with his wife, Anne Meara, appeared in movies like Hairspray and The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three, and did so much more, as covered in his New York Times obituary.

Stan Lee

Stan Lee, the man behind some of the most recognized and influential Marvel Comics characters, as well as a great cameo actor in several of the best Marvel movies, lived to be 95 years old before passing away in November 2018. Described by the New York Times as a man who revolutionized the comic book world, Lee’s impact continues to be felt today.

Joss Ackland 

Joss Ackland, who appeared in more than 100 movies and TV shows ranging from Lethal Weapon 2 to White Mischief, passed away in November 2023. According to the BBC, the legendary and prolific actor was 95 years old at the time of his death.

Hugh Hefner

Though he wasn’t an actor or director, Hugh Hefner was just as much a part of the Hollywood scene as anyone else throughout the second half of the 20th century and beyond, thanks to his groundbreaking Playboy publication. The party came to an end for the media trailblazer in September 2019 when he passed away at the age of 91. According to the New York Times, Hefner died at his longtime home, the Playboy Mansion.

While we are sad that some of these beloved Hollywood stars have passed away, we can take solace in knowing they all lived long and fulfilling lives, each having an incredible impact on the entertainment industry and culture as a whole. Five, ten, and even fifty years from now, it's hard to imagine a Hollywood, or world, where these icons aren't just as impactful as they are today.

Some of these actors had success their entire careers and then just kept having success as they got older. Some of these actors didn’t find a ton of success until much later than life. All reached the mountaintop of acting past the point when many others stop working because they kept pushing and doing groundbreaking work. Here's a look at great actors who had Oscar success later in life...

Anthony Hopkins

Anthony Hopkins didn’t get his first Oscar nomination until his mid-50s, but once he got his first recognition, the praise did not stop. His work was consistently recognized well into his eighties when he was nominated in consecutive years for The Two Popes and The Father in which he gave very different performances. 

Bill Nighy

Nighy mostly acted in theater productions for the early portion of his career, but he turned to films later in life and found incredible success with Love Actually. That led to key roles in a variety of huge franchises like Pirates Of The Caribbean and Harry Potter, and eventually in his mid-70s, it led to Living, which netted the popular actor his first Oscar nomination. 

Bruce Dern

Bruce Dern worked from the sixties forward on a wide variety of interesting projects in many different genres. He picked up his first Oscar nomination back in ‘79 for his work in Coming Home and got another surprise nomination at 77 more than three decades later for his work in Nebraska, a fantastic Alexander Payne road trip movie shot in black and white.

Charlotte Rampling

Charlotte Rampling made a fantastic career for herself as a model and actress drawn to unusual and daring projects, but it was her work much later in life that attracted huge recognition. Her performance in Swimming Pool was particularly popular with critics and awards voters, but it was 2015’s 45 Years that finally broke through at the Oscars and gave her a well deserved first nomination at age 69.

Clint Eastwood

There aren’t many total people who have had more Oscar success than Clint Eastwood. Over the course of his life, he picked up more than ten nominations, but only two of those were in the acting categories. He got one in ‘93 for Unforgiven and another in ‘05 for Million Dollar Baby. In both, he was also the director and clearly knew how to get the best out of himself as an actor. 

Henry Fonda

A movie based on a play about a couple in their mid-70s doesn’t sound like a likely box office winner, but On Golden Pond won seven weekends in a row at the box office in 1981. It also netted its leads late in life Oscar nominations including one for Henry Fonda at 76. It marked his second acting nomination, more than four decades after the first one for The Grapes Of Wrath in 1940.

Jessica Tandy

Jessica Tandy experienced a ton of success throughout her career in a variety of mediums, but it was her work on the stage that drew the most acclaim. At least that was the case until her 80s when she picked up two Oscar nominations for Driving Miss Daisy and Fried Green Tomatoes. She won for the former and the latter capped a fantastic six year run that also saw her earn raves for her work in Cocoon.

Jonathan Pryce

Jonathan Pryce was ten years younger than Anthony Hopkins when the two picked up acting nominations for their work in The Two Popes. It was his first recognition from The Academy, but it was far from his first recognition overall, as he netted both Emmy and Tony nominations earlier in his career. 

Judi Dench

Judi Dench didn’t pick up her first Oscar nomination until her 60s, but that’s mostly because she was too busy crushing the British theater scene. She somehow netted an astonishing eight nominations after her 62nd birthday, including one at age 78 for Philomena and age 87 for her performance in the touching Belfast. In between all that, she also found time to appear in eight James Bond movies, which introduced her to a new generation of fans.

Katharine Hepburn

Between 1934 and 1969, Katharine Hepburn was nominated for an astonishing eleven Best Actress Oscars. It’s arguably the greatest run in movie history, and yet, she wasn’t finished. At the age of 74, thirteen years after what everyone assumed was going to be her last nomination, she walked the red carpet one more time as a Best Actress nominee for On Golden Pond in 1982. The win made it that much sweeter. 

Laurence Olivier

There aren’t many people on this list that had more success throughout their careers than Laurence Olivier. The beloved thespian won Emmys, Oscars and now is the namesake for London’s version of the Tony’s. At 71, he picked up his last Oscar nomination for The Boys From Brazil but continued to act for another full decade.

Peter O'Toole

Peter O’Toole was nominated for acting Oscars in the '60s, '70s, '80s and '00s. The last of those recognitions came when he was 74, and while he famously lost all eight of his Best Actor nominations, he was given an honorary Oscar by The Academy, who recognized him for his entire body of work, including the fantastic performances he gave late in life.

Morgan Freeman

Many of the nominations on this list came as a bit of a surprise. Not Morgan Freeman’s for Invictus. Playing Nelson Mandela sounded like the sort of thing that could pick him up an Oscar nomination for Invictus, and that’s exactly what happened when the movie came out and at 72, he was quickly given a nomination. It was his fifth overall.

Christopher Plummer

Christopher Plummer’s entire career was accompanied by praise from critics and numerous nominations, including three at the Oscars, all past the age of 75. None were a bigger surprise than the one he got at age 88 for All The Money In The World. The role was originally shot with Kevin Spacey, but after allegations of misconduct surfaced, producers reshot everything with Plummer in just 8 days.

Judd Hirsch

From Taxi to Dear John to The Goldbergs, Judd Hirsch was a part of numerous popular television shows and worked constantly from the mid-70s forward. Along the way, he was in a ton of good movies, but it was his work first in Ordinary People in 1980 and then in The Fabelmans in 2022 that were singled out by Oscar voters. 

Robert Duvall

Robert Duvall was nominated for seven Oscars, but six of those came between 1973 and 1999. His last one was, by far, the biggest surprise, as it came for The Judge when he was 84. It was proof that the popular actor was still capable of greatness, and it was also a sign of how much fans and critics connected with his work at various stages of his life. 

Max Von Sydow

During his incredible career that spanned seven decades, Max Von Sydow played everyone from Jesus Christ to the Three-Eyed Raven on Game Of Thrones. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1987 for his work in Pelle The Conqueror, but he wound up getting recognized one more time at the age of 82 for his incredible work in Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close.

George Burns

George Burns had a fantastic run as a radio star and then an early huge name in television, but he started losing momentum as an actor and shifted to producing until he signed on for The Sunshine Boys in 1975. It was his first movie in 36 years and won him an Oscar at 80, as well as paved the way for the fantastic final act of his career.

Jack Palance

After a successful stage career, Jack Palance became a huge movie star in the early 1950s, picking up tons of fans and multiple Academy Award nominations. He later went to Europe and made a series of popular movies, but his career was starting to fizzle out by the 1980s. Then he was hired to host a revival of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, and the popularity of that show, netted him a bunch of parts including in City Slickers, which proved so popular it won him an Oscar at 73.

Alan Arkin

Alan Arkin worked constantly for sixty years because what director wouldn’t want to hire him? He was seemingly always in very highly seen projects, often in key supporting roles. Little Miss Sunshine and Argo are, of course, the two most notable examples, as both netted him Oscar nominations in his seventies and the former landed him his only win. 

Ethel Barrymore

There aren't many, if any, bigger families in the history of Hollywood than The Barrymores. They were firmly established when Pinky came out in 1949 and netted Ethel Barrymore another Oscar nomination. For much of her career she focused on the stage, but she later shifted to mostly Hollywood and picked up four nods in her 60s and 70s. What a run.

Ruth Gordon

Ruth Gordon had a lot of success earlier in her career as a screenwriter. She picked up three nominations for her writing between 1947 and 1952. Later in her career, she found new life as an actress, picking up multiple Oscar nominations, the last at 72 for Rosemary's Baby, and starring in cult classics like Harold And Maude.

Youn Yuh-jung

With fantastic reviews and strong word of mouth, Minari made a lot of noise throughout award season. It eventually picked up six Oscar nominations, but it was the one for Youn Yuh-jung that fans were most delighted with. The 73-year-old wound up winning in the most feel good moment of the entire ceremony, becoming the first Korean actress to pick up a trophy at The Oscars. 

Helen Hayes

You won’t find many people on this entire list with more success than Helen Hayes. She’s an EGOT winner with at least one additional nomination from all four of those award shows. She picked up her last Oscar at age 70 for her work in Airport, where she stood out next to a ton of other acting legends including Dean Martin, Burt Lancaster, Jean Seberg, Jacqueline Bisset and more. 

June Squibb

Mostly a theater actress, she didn’t appear in her first movie until she was in her sixties. In her mid-80s, she found the perfect role opposite Bruce Dern in Nebraska. Audiences fell in love with her performance, and she picked up a surprise feelgood nomination. That opened the door for a ton of fun parts in everything from Pixar movies to Shameless. 

Gloria Stuart

I’m not sure there’s a single quote from Titanic referenced more often than Gloria Stuart’s “It’s been 84 years.” For her, it took 87 years to find a performance that resonated with that many people, but it was so good and connected with so many people that she picked up an Oscar nomination. Well deserved too. One of the most famous movies ever just wouldn’t have the same emotional punch without her. 

Peggy Ashcroft

Peggy Ashcroft made less than twenty film appearances during a career that was mostly dedicated to the stage, but despite that limited output, she was nominated for four BAFTAs and won an Oscar at 77 for her supporting work in A Passage To India. She then turned her focus toward television, where she was picking up Emmy nominations into her 80s. 

Hal Holbrook

Holbrook had plenty of success in his career with wins at the Tonys and Emmys, but it wasn’t until later in life when he was finally singled out by The Oscars for his work in Into The Wild. With more than 130 acting credits, his nomination at 82 was a good reminder that sometimes the best way to get acclaim isn’t by shopping for possible Oscar roles, it’s by consistently doing good, creative work and waiting for the right project to resonate. 

Don Ameche

Cocoon features a ton of fantastic performances from older actors, but it was veteran funnyman Don Ameche’s supporting role that voters most gravitated toward. He picked up a surprise win at 77 for his work as the revitalized Arthur Selwyn. It was a fantastic outcome, especially after the studio fired an early-in-his-career Robert Zemeckis from the director’s chair during pre-production.

Melvyn Douglas

If you want to have prolonged success in Hollywood, you need to find a way to reinvent yourself and start playing different kinds of roles. Melvyn Douglas had a great run early as a leading man, who acted opposite some of the industry’s top leading ladies, but it was later in his career, when he started playing more mature characters that he found Oscar success with three separate nominations, including one for Being There when he was 79.

John Houseman

Probably best known for his work alongside Orson Welles, John Houseman worked regularly as a director and especially producer, but he also found time to be an actor. Late in his career, he picked up an Oscar at 71 for The Paper Chase in a role fans loved so much he later played it on TV too.

Edmund Gwenn

You never know what your defining role as an actor is going to be until it happens. Edmund Gwenn carved out a really nice career for himself on the stage and screen, but his biggest success came when he was seventy. His role as Santa Claus in Miracle On 34th Street is still being watched decades later, and it also opened up the door for some great late career work, including another Oscar nomination in Mister 880.

Typically, actors will work their hardest to promote a film to the best of their ability... at first, that is. Sometimes, years (or months) after said movie releases, the stars will not hold back on their true feelings. See for yourself by taking a look at some of the, so-called, worst movies starring famous actors who would admit that even they agree with the most brutal critiques.

Ben Affleck (Daredevil)

Most would agree that he is one of the best live-action Batman actors, but Ben Affleck’s first stab at playing a superhero in 2003 was not very well received. The actor himself wasn't pleased either, as he told EW (via E!) that he agrees Daredevil “didn’t work, at all.” However, he later explained that what he appreciates about DD is that his commitment to accurately portraying Matt Murdock’s blindness paid off, at least.

Christian Bale (Newsies)

Newsies — a musical retelling of the 1899 New York newsboy strike — was a flop for Disney in 1992 but gained a cult following that star Christian Bale is not a part of. He told EW that the “wounds” he feels he suffered from starring in it healed over time. We suppose leading some great live-action Batman movies and winning an Oscar for The Fighter helped him as well. 

Halle Berry (Catwoman) 

When Halle Berry accepted her Razzie for Worst Actress of 2004 for Catwoman in person, she was one of the few actors to do so and thanked Warner Bros. for putting her in such a “god-awful movie.” At least the actor — who also has an Oscar for Monster’s Ball and a few well-received comic book movies under her belt (the X-Men movies) — has a sense of humor about starring in a DC movie that even John Rogers, one of its writers, thinks is bad.

Josh Brolin (Jonah Hex)

Future MCU and Deadpool 2 star Josh Brolin made his comic book movie debut in 2010 as the titular character in the DC Comics-inspired Western, Jonah Hex. The actor (and star of one of the best Neo-Westerns and, simply, best movies of the 2000s, No Country for Old Men) later told CBR (via CinemaBlend) that he would remake it if he had the chance, as he was not happy with how it turned out.

Sandra Bullock (Speed 2: Cruise Control)

Speed is considered one of the best action movies of all time, but Speed 2: Cruise Control is not remembered so fondly by most, including star Sandra Bullock. The Oscar winner brought up the 1997 sequel — which is set on a cruise ship — when asked by TooFab about movies she was initially embarrassed by before coming around later. However she never actually changed her tune on this one.

George Clooney (Batman & Robin)

While there are some people who actually do enjoy Batman & Robin, George Clooney — who played Bruce Wayne in the 1997 flop — is not one of them. On The Graham Norton Show, the Oscar winner talked about his propensity to constantly apologize for, as he believed at the time, ruining the Dark Knight’s big screen legacy forever, before Christopher Nolan saved it.

Sean Connery (The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen)

It's a shame to learn that an actor is not proud of their final live-action acting credit and such is the case with the late Sean Connery and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The former James Bond actor recalled in a 2007 interview unearthed by Heat Vision (via THR) how he tried to salvage the 2003 Alan Moore adaptation in the editing room and described director Stephen Norrington as insane.

David Cross (Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked)

According to The Washington Post, David Cross once felt the need to defend his participation in 2007’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, but he wasn't so kind about its 2011 threequel. During an appearance on Conan, the comedian recalled his “miserable” experience making Chipwrecked and recommended that the audience that was present not see the family film.

Viola Davis (The Help)

Even though her performance as 1960s Mississippi maid Abilene expanded her notoriety and earned her an Oscar nomination, Viola Davis regrets starring in 2011’s The Help. As she told Vanity Fair, “there’s a part of me that feels like I betrayed myself, and my people, because I was in a movie that wasn’t ready to [tell the whole truth]” and was “created in the filter and the cesspool of systemic racism.” 

Colin Farrell (Miami Vice)

When Michael Mann brought Miami Vice to the big screen in 2006, the action flick did not get the best reviews, based on its Rotten Tomatoes score of 47%. Lead actor Colin Farrell wasn’t too hot on it either, revealing to Total Film (via Far Out) that he “didn’t like it so much,” adding he felt it was “style over substance." Additionally, he even accepts some of the responsibility for that.

Crispin Glover (Back To The Future)

How could anyone dislike one of the best time travel movies ever made, 1985's Back to the Future? Well, George McFly actor Crispin Glover told AV Club that he felt the ending — which saw Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly return to an alternate present in which his family is rich — sent a misguided message, which is why he opted not to appear in the sequels.

Alec Guinness (Star Wars)

The Force was not strong with the Star Wars movies’ original Obi-Wan Kenobi actor, Alec Guinness, apparently. In 1975, the Oscar winner wrote a letter to his friend, Anne Kaufman — which was quoted in his biography and republished by Business Insider in 2013 — describing George Lucas’ script as “fairy-tale rubbish.”

Katherine Heigl (Knocked Up)

In 2008, Knocked Up cast member Katherine Heigl told Vanity Fair that it was “hard for [her] to love the movie,” as she believed it portrayed women in an unfavorable light. While the 2007 comedy is still remembered as one of the best Judd Apatow movies, the former Grey’s Anatomy cast member’s honest comments about sexism would have a negative impact on her career, unfortunately.

Bob Hoskins (Super Mario Bros.)

In 2011, the late Bob Hoskins was asked by The Guardian about his worst job, biggest disappointment, and element he would edit out from his past? His answer to each question was the infamous video game movie adaptation, Super Mario Bros., from 1993.

Jennifer Lawrence (Passengers)

Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence revealed to The New York Times that Adele actually recommended she should say “no” to 2016’s Passengers — in which she and Chris Pratt's characters wake up from a commercial interplanetary journey way too early. Lawrence then said she wished she hadn't ignored the advice from the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter.

Lindsay Lohan (I Know Who Killed Me)

According to a 2013 report by The Daily Mail, Lindsay Lohan was once tweeted at by a fan who told her she had watched I Know Who Killed Me twice the night before. The Parent Trap star replied by saying this fan had watched the 2007 psychological thriller “two times too many.”

Bill Murray (Garfield)

When Bill Murray said he regretted making Garfield during his iconic Zombieland cameo, that was not just a joke. In fact, it was during an interview with GQ that Murray said the only reason he agreed to voice the 2004 live-action movie’s titular cat was because he thought one of the Coen Brothers was writing it, only to learn too late that the scribe was Joel Cohen.

Paul Newman (The Silver Chalice)

According to the Irish Film Institute, Paul Newman’s choice for the “worst motion picture produced during the 1950s” was his screen acting debut: The Silver Chalice. Despite his feelings about it, the late, legendary actor actually received a “Most Promising Newcomer” Golden Globe nomination for playing the Holy Grail’s sculptor in the 1954 drama.

Robert Pattinson (Twilight)

There's no denying that playing Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies made Robert Pattinson the star he is now, but that doesn't change the fact that he's not big on the films. His 2011 interview with Vanity Fair, in which he says “representing something you don’t particularly like” is “weird” in reference to the teen vampire romance stories, is just one of many times the Batman actor has admitted to this.

Christopher Plummer (The Sound Of Music)

When asked about his most challenging role during a roundtable interview with THR, Christopher Plummer’s answer was Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music. His reasoning was nothing akin to Julie Andrews’ rough time shooting the iconic hill sequence, but was that he found the beloved 1965 musical itself to be “so awful and sentimental and gooey.”

Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern)

Has an actor ever been more shamelessly and frequently vocal about their disdain for their own work than Ryan Reynolds with Green Lantern? Most recently, Reynolds shared his horrified reaction to the 2009 DC flick at London’s Just for Laughs festival in 2023 (according to The Independent). But his most public and unapologetic expression of disappointment can be seen in both Deadpool movies.

Arnold Schwarzenegger (Red Sonja)

While recognized as a cult favorite today, Red Sonja — which is being rebooted — is certainly not a film Arnold Schwarzenegger would call one of his best movies. In fact, the former California governor is quoted in Far Out as saying that he used to punish his children by forcing them to watch the 1985 comic book adaptation, which stars Brigette Nielsen as the titular warrior.

Sylvester Stallone (Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot) 

Apparently, Sylvester Stallone has Arnold Schwarzenegger to blame for his decision to star in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, which the Rocky star later told Ain’t It Cool News was “one of the worst movies in the entire solar system.” According to SlashFilm, the Terminator star revealed he tricked his then-rival, Stallone, into signing on for the panned 1992 comedy by feigning interest in the script.

Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra)

Radio host Howard Stern once named G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra as guest Channing Tatum’s star-making moment. In turn, Tatum bluntly admitted he hates the 2009 cinematic adaptation of the action figure line, claiming he was “pushed into” making it by Paramount. That explains why he requested to be killed off in the 2013 sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

Charlize Theron (Reindeer Games)

Academy Award winner Charlize Theron did not hold back when telling Esquire that she believes 2000’s Reindeer Games is a “bad, bad, bad movie.” However, she does not regret starring in the Ben Affleck-led Christmas action flick, as it a gave her the chance to work with director John Frankenheimer.

Mark Wahlberg (The Happening)

On a ranked list of M. Night Shyamalan movies, most people might put The Happening at a pretty low spot, including one of its stars. During a press conference for The Fighter, Mark Wahlberg admitted that he does not like The Happening either in an expletive-filled tirade. This came after he revealed that Amy Adams was up for Zooey Deschanel’s part in the unintentionally hilarious 2009 disaster thriller.

Sam Worthington (Clash Of The Titans)

Despite the fact that 2010's Clash of the Titans remake is one of his bigger hits outside of the Avatar movies, Sam Worthington is not a fan. He revealed to IndieWire that he put the blame on his “bland performance” as Perseus and promised to make up for it with the 2012 sequel, Wrath of the Titans.

Gwyneth Paltrow (Shallow Hal)

When Gwyneth Paltrow tested her friend and assistant Kevin Keating’s knowledge of her for a video on Netflix’s X account, he (almost) correctly names her least favorite performance of hers as Rosemary in Shallow Hal. The Academy Award winner and MCU star then describes the Farrelly Brothers’ 2001 fantasy rom-com, which also stars Jack Black, as a “disaster.”

Nicole Kidman (Australia)

Nicole Kidman revealed in an interview with a Sydney radio station (via Daily Mail) that she rarely watches her own movies but did attend the premiere of Australia, which reunited her with Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann. However, she found herself squirming in her seat over her performance in the 2009 romantic period drama, which paired her with Hugh Jackman.

Alec Baldwin (Rock Of Ages)

His fondness for director Adam Shankman and admiration for the all-star cast, including Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta-Jones, convinced Alec Baldwin to star in Rock of Ages. However, as he revealed in a 2013 interview with American Magazine Media Conference in New York (via The Wrap), the 2012 movie based on a Broadway hit featuring ’80s rock tunes was a “complete disaster” in his eyes.

Over the years, over 350 actors have portrayed Arthur Conan Doyle's titular detective character, Sherlock Holmes. From the early days of silent films to today's streaming giants, the world cannot seem to get enough of the deductive hero and his inquisitive sidekick, Dr. Watson. The character has been reimagined several times over the years, and has been modernized to fit the sensibilities of an ever changing audience.

With iterations spanning almost 100 years, here are some notable Sherlock Holmes movies and TV shows, and how you can watch them now. 

Sherlock Holmes Film Series (1939-1946)

In the early days of film, one of the first notable portrayals of Sherlock Holmes came from British actor Basil Rathbone. The actor, along with Nigel Bruce, who played his sidekick Dr. John Watson, made fourteen films based off the work of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. The first two films were produced by 20th Century Fox and took place during the Victorian era. Universal Pictures produced the latter twelve films and updated them to fit the 20th century and contained elements relating to WWII. The first three films in the series were directed by Sidney Lanfield, Alfred L. Werker, and John Rawlins, with the remainder helmed by Roy William Neill.

The Hound Of The Baskervilles (1959)

In 1959, directer Terence Fisher directed another adaptation of the Doyle novel The Hound of the Baskervilles. The film starred Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes and André Morrell as Dr. Watson. The film also featured Dracula's Christopher Lee as Henry Baskerville. The movie follows Holmes and Watson as they investigate a mysterious "hound" curse that has been prevalent in the Baskerville family following a centuries old murder.

Murder By Decree (1979)

Murder by Decree is another adaptation of a Doyle novel, called Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution. The Sound of Music's Christopher Plummer portrays Sherlock Holmes in this iteration, and performs alongside the legendary James Mason as Dr. John Watson. The film is directed by Bob Clark and was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures. 

The story follows Holmes, who investigates the serial killer Jack the Ripper as a private detective. The police try to deter Holmes by refusing his help in the investigation, but he prevails by gaining assistance from Robert Lees, played by Donald Sutherland.

The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes TV Series (1984-1994)

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was a British tv series for ITV Granada. It ran for 10 years, and featured adaptations from Doyle's novels, as well as brand new original detective stories featuring the character. British actor Jeremy Bratt became best known for portraying the titular character on English television, and was accompanied by David Burke, and later Edward Hardwicke, as John H. Watson. 

The series spanned nine seasons and was created by Michael Cox. The stories involved Holmes consulting the police in a variety of cases, as well as taking on his own cases as a private detective alongside military veteran John Watson, who lives with him at 221B Baker Street.

Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)

Young Sherlock Holmes was a reimagining of Sherlock Holmes helmed by Rain Man director Barry Levinson, which was written by Home Alone director Christopher Columbus. The film shows Holmes as a precocious teen in boarding school, who meets his bemused best friend and sidekick, John Watson. The two try to solve a series of suspicious deaths that occur on the school's campus. The titular character is played by Nicholas Rowe and John Watson is played by Alan Cox.

Without A Clue (1988)

Without a Clue is a comedy adaptation of the famous characters. This film also reimagines them, flipping the characterizations of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. This Thom Eberhardt helmed filmed sees Dr. Watson as the brilliant detective, with "Sherlock Holmes" being an actor pretending to be a detective so Watson can maintain his reputation in the medical world. Without a Clue stars veteran actor Michael Caine as Sherlock Holmes, and Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley as John Watson.

Sherlock Holmes Film Series (2009-present)

The 2000s saw more stylistic iterations of the Sherlock Holmes stories on screen. In 2009, director Guy Richie helmed two films about the Arthur Conan Doyle character for Warner Bros. Pictures. The films are titled Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, and star Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. The original film is about the eccentric detective's journey into investigating a mysticist's plan to control England by mysterious and magical means. The subsequent film follows Holmes and Watson as they travel throughout Europe, trying to foil Professor Moriarty's plan to instigate a global conflict. 

A third film in the series has been announced and is set to be directed by Rocketman helmer, Dexter Fletcher. Downey Jr. and Law are said to be planning to reprise their roles.

Sherlock TV Series (2010-2017)

One of the most popular Sherlock Holmes imaginings comes from the BBC, when the television series, Sherlock, became internationally beloved. Dr. Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch's breakthrough performance as Sherlock on the series helped make him the household name he is today. He starred alongside The Hobbit actor Martin Freeman, who portrayed John Watson on the series. 

The show is set during a contemporary period with an eccentric, awkward Holmes at the center. He moves in with Watson, who acts as his right hand man as they investigate a series of crimes that Holmes' nemesis, Professor Moriarty (played by Fleabag's Andrew Scott), may or may not be behind. The series ran for four seasons, and contained 13 episodes, including a Victorian-set holiday special.

Elementary TV Series (2012-2019)

Sherlock Holmes also got a 21st century American update on CBS. The long-running network television series, Elementary, portrayed Holmes as a disgraced former detective who left London for New York City after a stint in rehab. He is given a sober companion in the States, Dr. Joan Watson, who lost her medical license and now helps former addicts maintain sobriety. To ward off his addiction, Holmes becomes a consultant for the NYPD. Sherlock was portrayed Jonny Lee Miller on the series, with a female reimagining of Watson played by Kill Bill's Lucy Liu. The show ran for seven seasons and was created by Robert Doherty.

Mr. Holmes (2015)

In 2015, Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon directed Mr. Holmes. The film was adapted from A Slight Trick of Mind, written by Mitch Cullen, and was inspired by Doyle's characters. Mr. Holmes gives audiences an older Sherlock Holmes, played by Sir Ian McKellen. The title detective is 93, retired, and living in Sussex. He struggles to remember details from his last unsolved case, as his mind is starting to slip. The film also co-stars Ozark's Laura Linney as Mrs. Munro, and is as heartwarming as the trailer suggests.

Enola Holmes Film Series (2020, 2022)

Enola Holmes is a film series that reimagines the Sherlock Holmes story by giving him a young sister, Enola Holmes. The films are adapted from The Enola Holmes Mysteries book series by Nancy Springer, and are helmed by Fleabag director Harry Bradbeer.

The critically acclaimed first film follows Enola (played by Millie Bobby Brown) who is the spunky sibling to the celebrated detective (portrayed here by Henry Cavill). While tracking down her missing mother, she embarks on an adventure to save the entire country during the Victorian era. The sequel, Enola Holmes 2, features another puzzling mystery and follows the titular heroine who tries to make a name for herself as a professional detective while living in her brother's shadow. Both films feature an all-star cast, and a version of the iconic John Watson character, as played by Himesh Patel.

Sherlock Holmes always seems like an inspiration for filmmakers and writers to draw upon, so there will likely be even more films to note in the future. On February 5, 2021, the world lost one of its greatest actors with the death of legend of the screen and stage Christopher Plummer. The 91-year-old actor, who appeared in 119 movies, 71 television series, and 17 theatre productions throughout his decades-long career, bringing some of the most unforgettable characters to life in a way few, if any, could pull off with as much grace, style, and confidence. From career-defining roles in classics like The Sound of Music to modern classics like Beginners and Knives Out, there are dozens of Christopher Plummer movies that have withstood the test of time.

With performances going all the way back to the early 1950s to ones that have yet to reach audiences in 2021, Christopher Plummer’s legacy is one that should be remembered fondly for he gave us his all until his final breath. And while I would love to break down each of Plummer’s roles, small and large, for the sake of brevity, I’ve put together this list of his ten best performances, ranked from great to greatest.

10. Inside Man (Arthur Case)

Christopher Plummer is often remembered for his more friendly characters like Captain Georg von Trapp in the 1965 musical The Sound of Music and his Oscar-winning performance in 2010’s Beginners, but the decorated actor could pull off an evil villain with something to hide better than most. Such is the case for the 2006 Spike Lee joint Inside Man in which Plummer portrays Arthur Case, the chairman of the board of directors of the bank at the center of a major heist and hostage situation.

Throughout much of the movie, the audience doesn’t fully understand just why Arthur Case is attempting to prevent certain items of his from being found, but it’s easy to tell by his fidgety demeanor and persistence in taking care of the matter in the quietest of manners. Once the truth comes out and we learn that Case has a past full of war crimes and crimes against humanity, we become fully aware as to why the bank chairman did all he could to prevent his dark past from resurfacing.

9. All The Money In The World (J. Paul Getty)

Ridley Scott’s 2017 crime thriller All the Money in the World may not be anyone’s favorite movie from the acclaimed director or anyone in the cast, but the fact that Christopher Plummer was hired to replace Kevin Spacey just two months before the film’s release earns it a spot on this list. Shortly after sexual abuse allegations against Spacey surfaced in October 2017, Plummer was brought in to portray J. Paul Getty, the multi-billionaire oil tycoon who refused to give in to kidnappers’ demands when his grandson was held hostage in 1973.

The fact Christopher Plummer was able to come in at short notice, learn all his lines, become the commanding figure, and complete a series of reshoots in a little over a week is something that will be talked about for years to come. And everyone else seems to think so as well considering Plummer received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations following its December 2017 release.

8. The Thorn Birds (Archbishop Vittorio di Contini-Verchese)

In addition to appearing in scores of movies throughout his career, Christopher Plummer also had a successful television career, and one the titles that comes up the most is the 1983 miniseries The Thorn Birds. While Plummer doesn’t play the main character in this four-part, ten-hour sprawling epic about a priest having a forbidden love affair that can’t carry on, the late actor’s portrayal of Archbishop Vittorio di Contini-Verchese remains one of the bright spots of the ABC production.

Christopher Plummer’s ability to portray the good nature of Catholic dignitary while also showing off his chops when his character begins planning things of his own is something to behold. And while The Thorn Birds typically doesn’t come up in the discussion of Plummer’s best roles, it’s one that shouldn’t be forgotten.

7. A Beautiful Mind (Dr. Rosen)

Ron Howard’s 2001 Academy Award-winning biographical drama A Beautiful Mind is mostly remembered for the phenomenal portrayal of John Nash by Russell Crowe, but the supporting cast, which includes Christopher Plummer as psychiatrist Dr. Rosen, is nothing to overlook. Throughout the movie, we watch as Dr. Rosen attempts to treat Nash’s deteriorating mental state due to his schizophrenia, even if the brilliant mathematician sees Plummer’s character as his own personal villain.

The way in which Plummer navigates the role and the events of the movie adds a level of authority to A Beautiful Mind that takes it from a great movie to one of the best of the 21st Century. Also, the way in which Plummer’s character provides much-needed exposition without coming off as much is further proof of his brilliant acting.

6. The Man Who Would Be King (Rudyard Kipling)

John Huston’s 1975 epic The Man Who Would Be King mostly follows the exploits of two British soldiers-turned-adventurers played by Sean Connery and Michael Caine, but Christopher Plummer’s Richard Kipling (the name given to the narrator of the real Kipling’s 1888 novella of the same name) does a remarkable job of serving as an almost tour guide for the audience watching the story unfold. Not as over-the-top or charismatic as the film’s two leads, Plummer’s Kipling remains the voice of reason at times and has a cool-headedness about him that is truly something to behold.

5. Up (Charles F. Muntz)

By the time Christopher Plummer voiced the famed explorer-turned-villain Charles F. Muntz in Pixar’s Up, he was already well-established in the voice acting field, having earned a Primetime Emmy for his work on the animated series Madeline, as well as other critically acclaimed projects like An American Tail. Still, though, Plummer’s voice work in 2009 emotionally-charged adventure story remains at the top of the list of his animated works, and entire filmography for that matter.

Convincing in his performance, first as the eager explorer oozing charm, and then as the dastardly and mentally unstable elderly man who’ll stop at nothing to get home, Christopher Plummer helps make Up a movie that is remembered for more than just its heartbreaking opening chapter.

4. Knives Out (Harlan Thrombey)

With a cast that includes Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, and countless others, you would think that it would be hard to stand out in the crowd in Rian Johnson’s 2019 whodunit comedy, but not for Christopher Plummer. The late actor’s performance as Harlan Thrombey, the mystery novelist whose suicide kickstarts the film’s plot is beyond amazing and remains one of the best in the whole production, which is saying something.

The way Christopher Plummer is able to play off his costars (especially in a certain scene with Ana de Armas’ character Marta) is brilliant and should be studied by aspiring thespians around the world. And despite the brief time on screen, Plummer makes the most of it and gets more out of a few minutes than most could get out an entire movie. Time to watch it again.

3. The Insider (Mike Wallace)

The Insider, Michael Mann’s 1999 drama centering on a fictionalized account of a true story of a tobacco industry whistleblower on the CBS program 60 Minutes is one of those movies that’s so good and features a cast that’s so strong, it’s hard to believe it’s not a bigger deal. With everyone from Al Pacino to Russell Crowe to Philip Baker Hall firing at all cylinders, this movie is an intense and oftentimes frustrating account into the evildoings of large corporations.

And in the middle of it all is Christopher Plummer in his portrayal of the late journalist Mike Wallace as he covers the 60 Minutes story. And while not always viewed as the hero, or willing to stand for what is right in some cases, Plummer’s version of the famous reporter is a well-rounded character that comes off as living, breathing human isn’t afraid to admit they are wrong.

2. Beginners (Hal Fields)

After watching Christopher Plummer’s portrayal of Hal Fields in Mike Mills’ 2011 romantic dramedy Beginners, it should come as no surprise as to why the late actor received his first and only Oscar for his heartbreaking yet inspiring performance of a man coming to terms with both his identity and mortality in the final years of his life. Coming out of the closet following the death of his wife, the widower finds new meaning in life and finally accepts who is as a person and explains as much to his son Oliver played by Ewan McGregor.

There is a certain charm to Beginners that prevent me from growing tired of this lovingly poignant story despite watching it dozens of times since its release. The chemistry between the cast, the pacing of the story that allows things to play out, and tone of the film make it all that much better.

1. The Sound Of Music (Captain Georg von Trapp)

This should come as no surprise, but Christopher Plummer’s performance as Captain Georg von Trapp in the 1965 musical sensation The Sound of Music is hands down the actor’s best role, even if he wasn’t too fond of the movie following its release. The way in which Plummer’s von Trapp transforms from a strict military officer and patriarch of a family consisting of musically talented yet disobedient children into a loving, caring man upon meeting and falling for Julie Andrew’s Maria is so brilliant it makes you forget the movie ends with the family on the run from Nazis.

There are plenty of reasons The Sound of Music remains as popular today as it was upon its release some 55 years ago, and Christopher Plummer’s iconic performance is near the top of that list.

These are the ten best Christopher Plummer roles but this doesn’t mean these are the only good roles from his miraculous career. Over the years, Plummer killed it in movies like David Fincher’s 2011 remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, 12 Monkeys, and even The Return of the Pink Panther. With stage productions at multiple legendary theatres on Broadway and countless television appearances, it’s safe to say Plummer’s career was one for the ages.

We just lost a legend in Christopher Plummer. He was Sound of Music’s Captain Von Trapp, Up’s villainous explorer and Best Supporting Actor winner for Beginners, along with being a husband, father, friend and collaborator to those who knew him. Following news breaking of his passing on Friday, an outpouring of tributes were penned in memory of the late actor, including from his Maria, i.e. Julie Andrews, and recent co-star Knives Out’s Chris Evans.

His most famous co-star is undoubtedly the 85-year-old Julie Andrews, who shared the screen with Christopher Plummer for the timeless Sound of Music film back in 1965. The actors remained friends for the past 65 years, and following his death, Andrews released this statement via ABC News:

When the pair were interviewed back in 2015 by Vanity Fair, their dynamic was described as something of a “well-worn patter of an old married couple” as Julie Andrews also referred to the actor as “honeybun” and they looked back on 50 years of friendship. Born in Ontario, in 1929, Christopher Plummer started out on the stage and small screen of his native Canada throughout the 1950s. Director Sidney Lumet would give him his first film role in the picture Stage Struck, but 1965 would land him one of his career’s first landmark projects: the film adaptation of Rogers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. From that point on, Plummer’s career would go to exciting and challenging places, with characters both kind hearted and gruff at his disposal.

Only a Grammy short of the coveted EGOT, Plummer was a Tony and Oscar nominated juggernaut. And when it came to the golden honors at the Oscars, he became not just another winner of the award for Best Supporting Actor, but also the oldest person to win the award, at 82, for his work in 2010’s Beginners. He would add another Oscar record to his belt six years later, when All The Money In The World made him the oldest nominee to date.

Daniel Craig played lead detective Benoit Blanc in Knives Out. He was the one leading the charge to solve the case of who killed author Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). Craig will conclude his run as James Bond when No Time To Die hits theaters in April 2021.

Craig will reprise his role as detective Blanc in the upcoming Knives Out sequel. Not much is known about the sequel, but it will likely involve a new set of suspects and a new murder mystery.

Ana de Armas (Marta Cabrera)

Ana de Armas plays Harlan’s beloved nurse Marta. Originally, she believes herself responsible for Harlan’s death, but then gets involved in trying to uncover the truth behind it. Ana de Armas has been one of the busiest since Knives Out. She appeared in the British crime thriller The Informer. She then appeared in the Netflix original movie Wasp Network with Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez, and Gael Garcia Bernal.

De Armas also appeared in another Netflix original movie: The Night Clerk. This one stars de Armas, John Leguizamo, Helen Hunt, and Tye Sheridan. It involves a hotel night clerk being the center of a murder investigation. She also appeared in Netflix's bio-pic Sergio about UN diplomat Sergio Vieira de Mello.

Ana de Armas will appear alongside Craig again in No Time to Die. The Cuban actress will make history when she plays Marilyn Monroe in the upcoming movie Blonde. She’ll also star alongside Ben Affleck in Deep Water.

Chris Evans (Hugh Ransom Drysdale)

Chris Evans' character Ransom is the eldest grandson of Harlan. They have a disagreement and they fight before Harlan’s death. Ransom also is the family member most helpful with the case to find his grandfather’s murder, and he enjoys a knitted sweater.

Without having another Marvel movie to film, Evans was able to join the world of TV with Defending Jacob. In the Apple TV series, Evans plays an assistant district attorney whose life gets turned upside down when his 14-year-old son is accused of being involved in a murder. Jaeden Martell who also played a Jacob in Knives Out co-stars in Defending Jacob with Evans and Michelle Dockery. The series streamed on AppleTV from April to May 2020. Netflix has commissioned a project called The Gray Man that stars Evans and Ryan Gosling. The Russo brothers will direct it.

Evans is also rumored to be playing Orin Scrivello in the Little Shop of Horrors remake. Orin is the psycho dentist and abusive ex-boyfriend of Audrey. Steve Martin played this character in the 1986 version.

Jamie Lee Curtis (Linda Drysdale)

In Knives Out, Jamie Lee Curtis plays Linda Drysdale, Harlan’s daughter and a suspect in his murder. Curtis voiced the character of Agent Bruchstein for the FX animated series Archer. The Halloween actress is set to reprise her role as Laurie Strode for two additional Halloween movies: Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.

Curtis will also appear in the A24 sci-fi film Everything Everywhere All At Once. The film stars Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, James Hong, and Jonathan Ke Quan.

Michael Shannon (Walt Thrombey)

Walt is Harlan’s son and the one who works in his publishing company. He’s fired by Harlan right before his death, making him a prime suspect in the case. Michael Shannon appeared in the Broadhurst Theatre production of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. He played Johnny from May 4th to July 28, 2019.

Shannon will join an ensemble cast in the adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s book Nine Perfect Strangers. David E. Kelley will act as executive producer for this upcoming Hulu series. In 2020, he appeared in the films The Quarry and Echo Boomers. Shannon also has a few upcoming projects: Bullet Train, Swing, and Shriver. Shriver reunites him with his Knives Out co-star Don Johnson.

Don Johnson (Richard Drysdale)

Richard Drysdale is Linda’s husband and Harlan finds out about his affair. Johnson appeared with Knives Out co-star Michael Shannon in Shriver. In 2019, the same year as Knives Out’s release, Johnson was appearing in Watchmen as Chief Judd Crawford.

Don Johnson teams up with John Boyega in Rebel Ridge. Rebel Ridge is a thriller about an ex-marine who takes on dirty cops. Johnson will also reprise his role as Nash Bridges in the upcoming revival of Nash Bridges.

Toni Collette (Joni Thrombey)

Joni is a Thrombey by marriage. She was married to Harlan’s now-deceased son Neil. She embezzles from Harlan by dipping into her daughter’s college fund to keep up her lifestyle. In 2020, Toni Collette appeared in Dream Horse alongside Damian Lewis. It’s a sports movie based on the true story of a racehorse. Collette had a role in the Netflix and Charlie Kaufman original film I’m Thinking of Ending Things.

In 2019, she also appeared in the critically acclaimed Netflix miniseries Unbelievable, which earned her an Emmy nomination. In 2021, Toni Collette will take on the leading role in the adaptation of Karin Slaughter’s novel Pieces of Her. She also has a few projects in development: a sci-fi thriller with Anna Kendrick called Stowaway and a Guillermo del Toro thriller called Nightmare Alley.

Lakeith Stanfield (Detective Lieutenant Elliott)

Lakeith Stanfield played a detective assigned to Harlan’s case. He doesn’t seem too thrilled with Blanc taking over the investigation but slowly gets on board with his method of crime-solving. Stanfield co-starred with Issa Rae in the romantic drama The Photograph.

Stanfield lent his voice to the final season of BoJack Horseman. He played Guy. In 2021, Stanfield will voice the first African samurai in Yasuke. Stanfield appears in the Black Panther Party drama Judas and the Black Messiah. He’ll play activist William O’Neal alongside Daniel Kaluuya and Jesse Plemons.

Katherine Langford (Meg Thrombey)

Katherine Langford plays Meg Thrombey, Harlan’s granddaughter and she’s Joni’s daughter. She seems nice and kind, unlike the rest of her family, but when her tuition is threatened, her true colors show. Langford had the lead role in the Netflix original series Cursed. She played Nimue, a young woman with magical powers on a quest during medieval times. It’s a retelling of the legend of King Arthur.

In 2020, Langford co-starred with Charlie Plummer and Hayley Law in the teen drama-comedy Spontaneous. She played a girl who finds love after people in her high school start to randomly explode.

Jaeden Martell (Jacob Thrombey)

Jaeden Martell played Jacob Thrombey, the youngest of the Thrombey dynasty. He’s the son of Walt and Donna (Riki Lindhome). He doesn’t do much in the film but stays on his phone, but you just know he’s up to no good. Martell appeared in many movies in 2019, including the horror film The Lodge and the coming-of-age story The True Adventures of Wolfboy.

He reprised his role as teen Bill in IT Chapter Two. Jaeden Martell joined his Knives Out co-star in Defending Jacob. In the Apple TV series he played Chris Evans and Michelle Dockery’s characters’ son Jacob. He’s suspected of being involved in the murder of another teen. Martell will star opposite Susan Sarandon in the upcoming drama Tunnels. The film is about the unlikely friendship between the grandmother who raised a school shooter and the brother of one of her grandson’s victims.

Christopher Plummer (Harlan Thrombey)

Harlan Thrombey was the patriarch of the Thrombey family who is killed by a member of his family. Knives Out then follows Harlan through flashbacks and shows various reasons why he might have been killed. Plummer appeared alongside Sebastian Stan, Ed Harris, Samuel L. Jackson, Peter Fonda, and William Hurt in The Last Full Measure.

Plummer played Howard in the suspense drama series Departure. It’s a show about the mystery of Flight 716, a plane that vanishes. Departure was renewed and Plummer will make an appearance in it. In 2021, Plummer will voice a character in the animated feature Heroes of the Golden Masks.

Noah Segan (Trooper Wagner)

Noah Segan plays Trooper Wagner in Knives Out. Wagner is one of the men called to investigate Harlan’s death. Unlike Detective Elliot, Wagner is immediately impressed and in awe of Blanc. Segan appeared in the anthology horror film Scare Package. Segan appears in the segment called “M.I.S.T.E.R.” The film is currently available on Shudder.

Noah Segan also appeared in the horror western The Pale Door.

Knives Out had a very robust run in movie theaters at the tail end of last year, but it has only been since the movie has headed onto Blu-ray, DVD and Digital that more fun details related to the movie have come out. This includes a very clever Harlan Thrombey Easter egg that was added to Rian Johnson’s film and the director has confirmed the addition.

If you’ve watched Knives Out, you may have already noticed the portrait of Harlan Thrombey, patriarch of the Thrombey clan, which pops up throughout the film. One Eagle-eyed social media user caught that the portrait changes as the mystery surrounding the movie’s murder plotline is ultimately solved. Take a look at the update to the portrait below.

You have to think this was intentional and, in fact, on the Blu-ray disc Rian Johnson does talk about why the creative team made the change to the portrait in the movie. According to the DVD extras, Rian Johnson confirmed the change was made both as a nod for the fans and because it plays into the narrative with Ana de Armas’ character, Marta. He said:

Rian Johnson has gone on (and on and on) about not setting up his thriller as a typical whodunnit. In fact, we learn “whodunnit” very early on and the journey to Knives Out’s ultimately satisfying conclusion is one of surprising twists and turns that few probably saw coming.

However, like some other whodunnits, Knives Out is filled with Eater eggs. Rian Johnson has been talking about his movie a lot – which makes sense as Benoit Blanc is soon going to be a franchise character – and has previously confirmed some of the other Easter eggs in the movie. Some of these Easter eggs have been pretty detailed and would pretty much only be for the most astute of viewers, but the one with the portrait may have popped out to some.

While we wait to see more from Daniel Craig in the Benoit Blanc role, there are plenty of other fun nods that can be found within Knives Out, including nods to Breaking Bad and more. You can see for yourself if you purchase the full set, available now.

Christopher Plummer has been a longtime staple in Hollywood, but becoming a 2018 internet meme has to be a new experience for the veteran actor. When news broke that Roseanne was cancelled in the aftermath of Roseanne Barr's controversial Twitter remarks, a few plucky fans on the internet jokingly suggested that Plummer step in to play Roseanne Conner in Season 2, in reference to him rapidly replacing the fired Kevin Spacey in Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World. Plummer is aware of the Roseanne jokes and others, and he responded to fans in a recent interview.

After the controversy-lalden Kevin Spacey was dropped from the film All The Money In The World, _Christopher Plummer joined the film for reshoots just a month before its premiere, and he ended up getting Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for his performance. The actor seemed to thrive in a seemingly impossible situation, which makes the joke all the more humorous that he could do the same on _Roseanne on ABC. After all, we know he can learn the lines without a problem, and he's capable of emotionally weighty performances.

Of course, the people sharing Christopher Plummer's Roseanne memes are only joking (probably), although who wouldn't want to see Plummer sitting at the table with the Conner family and letting loose a hearty laugh just before each episode starts? Who wouldn't want to see a marriage argument turn into make-up snuggles between Plummer and John Goodman's Dan? And it's a no-brainer to want Laurie Metcalf and Plummer bouncing lines off of each other.

Even Christopher Plummer is baffled by how his performance of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty was received by critics. Plummer indicated he truly wondered if his performance in All The Money In The World was really worthy of such acclaim, or if Hollywood was more or less recognizing how impressive it was that he could successfully spin the role with the extreme time crunch of the film's reshoots. Here's what he told The Guardian about it.

Unfortunately, ABC doesn't appear to be pursuing Christopher Plummer to play the Conner family matriarch in Roseanne Season 2, but is instead attempting to remove the character from the franchise completely with a new spinoff potentially centered on Sara Gilbert's Darlene. Barr is reportedly willing to remove herself from the franchise entirely, which is said to be the only way ABC would agree to the deal. For what it's worth, the network can at least take solace in knowing Plummer didn't explicitly say no when speaking about playing Roseanne. Just in case anyone out there wants to try to make that happen.

When it comes to bringing a real person to life on the big screen, J. Paul Getty is not an easy person to adapt. After all, we're talking about a billionaire oil tycoon who refused to pay the ransom for his kidnapped grandson. As such, it must have been nerve-wracking for Ridley Scott to show All The Money In The World to Gail Harris -- the woman Michelle Williams plays in the film -- but he recently told me that she approved of the work that he had done with the story. Said Scott,

Sitting down with Ridley Scott and Christopher Plummer last month during the Los Angeles press day for All The Money In The World, I asked the two men about the importance of fidelity to the true story, and it was in his response that the director told me about Gail Harris' experience watching the film. Apparently she was not only on board with the script when it was first presented to her at the start of production, but also gave it the thumbs up following a screening.

Interestingly, though, it should be pointed out that the version that Gail Harris saw is not the film that audiences can now see in theaters nationwide. Instead, she actually saw it a few months back when the movie still featured Kevin Spacey as J. Paul Getty. Because of the last-minute recasting, Harris hasn't seen the Christopher Plummer version of All The Money In The World Yet, but according to Ridley Scott the situation should weirdly fix the only issue that Harris did take with the film. The director explained,

Funny enough, Ridley Scott isn't the only person who thinks that Christopher Plummer brought a much softer side to J. Paul Getty than Kevin Spacey. During my interviews with both Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams, both of them told me that they had wound up changing their own performances working with Plummer because he had such a different energy.

In the weeks leading up to the release of Ridley Scott's All The Money In The World, the film went through some unprecedented changes. Not wishing to be marred by the scandal surrounding Kevin Spacey, it was decided that his role would be recast and that last minute reshoots would be performed. Naturally, replacement Christopher Plummer put on a very different turn than what Spacey had done with the part of J. Paul Getty, but I recently learned from his co-stars that their approaches changed as well. Mark Wahlberg told me,

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with the stars of All The Money In The World during the Los Angeles press junket for the film, and it was while interviewing Mark Wahlberg that I asked about his personal change in performance. The actor confirmed that he did indeed find that his approach as Fletcher Chase was different when acting opposite Christopher Plummer, largely because of his natural sweetness and kind energy.

Michelle Williams' character in All The Money In The World has a very different relationship with J. Paul Getty than the one Fletcher Chase has, but one thing that she shared in common with Mark Wahlberg is that both saw an impact from playing off of Christopher Plummer. In Williams' opinion, however, this was a great thing because she felt that it presented an exciting opportunity:

When I followed up asking Michelle Williams what it was about her performance that changed working with the new J. Paul Getty, she actually echoed similar sentiments as her co-star, noting that Christopher Plummer's kindness had a particular effect on the way Gail Harris acts around him. She told me,

Christopher Plummer was recently part of one of the wildest decisions in film history when he was brought in at the last minute to replace a single actor in a finished film. Now, the actor speaks about how he accomplished so much in so little time. Plummer replaced Kevin Spacey in the role of J. Paul Getty for the new movie All the Money in the World and filmed all of his scenes in just nine days. Plummer says he had to rely on his director Ridley Scott for suggestions regarding how to play the character, since he had no time to research the part, and he left the rest up to the wardrobe department and his own imagination. According to Plummer...

Following a series of allegations against actor Kevin Spacey that has seen him removed from the upcoming season of House of Cards as well, director Ridley Scott made the unprecedented decision to take his completed movie starring the actor, All the Money in the World, and re-film every scene in which Spacey appeared. Since the movie was otherwise done and it had a release date to meet, there wasn't the usual amount of time before shooting where an actor can research a role, get to know the character, or otherwise make decisions about how to play the part.

As Christopher Plummer tells The Hollywood Reporter, he basically had to go with his gut and leave the rest up to the crew. Plummer credits the makeup and wardrobe people for helping make him look more like J. Paul Getty, which certainly helps an actor feel like they are more in the role. From there, he basically just had to go with a performance that felt right.

Whatever the cast and crew of All the Money in the World did, it seems to have worked. Christopher Plummer was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance, as was co-star Michelle Williams and director Ridley Scott. Whether this is an indication of bigger accolades to come is too difficult to tell at this point. All the Money in the World opens in theaters today.

Director Ridley Scott has multiple classics on his filmography, but reflecting on his resume reveals what is really an unfortunately modest hit-to-miss ratio. Looking at his record post-2000, he's made some great movies, like the quick con drama Matchstick Men and the smart, thrilling The Martian, but his record is also tarnished with whiffs like Alien: Covenant, Robin Hood, and Prometheus. It's made it so that walking into any of his films is basically a coin flip when it comes to expectations. This is part of the baggage that comes with his latest, All The Money In The World... but even that plays second fiddle to the major behind-the-scenes shake-ups that this film forever will be associated with.

Following recent horrific allegations against actor Kevin Spacey, Ridley Scott made the decision to alter All The Money In The World significantly. With only weeks leading up to release, Scott recast Spacey in the role of legendary oil tycoon John Paul Getty, replacing him with the great Christopher Plummer through extensive last-minute reshoots. Because of this, many movie-goers will be studying the movie for seams, looking for those specific edits. The impressive thing is that you won't find many, as the filmmakers did a tremendous job in that department. The less positive side of the whole matter, however, is that despite some standout performances, the film is ultimately mostly mediocre.

Primarily set in the early 1970s, the film centers on one of the richest families in American history, and the scandal surrounding them that shocked the world. At a time when J. Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer) was seen as the wealthiest man in the world, his favorite grandson, John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer, no relation) was kidnapped by criminals while living in Rome. With his prime captor, Cinquanta (Romain Duris), asking for a large $17 million payoff, the teen's mother, Gail Harris (Michelle Williams) -- who had divorced from the Getty family years earlier -- turned to the family's patriarch for help. When the oil magnate refuses to pay on the grounds that it could potentially inspire kidnappings of his other grandchildren, Gail works side by side with Getty's security man, Fletcher Chase (Mark Wahlberg), to find her abducted son and bring him home before it's too late.

Clearly All The Money In The World has an amazing story to tell based on true events, though it's in the bones of the script where the film finds its deepest issues. With a movie like this, steeped in a certain amount of history and requiring the audience to have a degree of background about the subject matter, you hope that it finds a creative way to help it handle the expositional load. Unfortunately, the whole thing winds up stalling upfront as that job is bungled. It always feels lazy when a feature leans on either voice-over narration or flashbacks to spew information unavailable in the straight narrative, and David Scarpa's script actually uses both liberally in the opening of the story without actually committing to either one as legitimate storytelling devices. The result has the film scrambling to find its feet as the second act begins, and while it eventually does, it also never entirely recovers from the rocky start.

Ridley Scott eventually does make All The Money In The World work as a captivating thriller, complete with high stakes and beautiful high-contrast photography from regular collaborator Dariusz Wolski -- but it also clearly helps that he's working with some of the greatest performers in the game. Hearing about the aforementioned behind-the-scenes changes, you might expect that J. Paul Getty has a small role to play within the movie and little impact on the larger story; but you'd be completely wrong, and it's honestly stunning to see what the production was able to accomplish in a limited amount of time with Christopher Plummer. It's a massively complex portrayal, with the character balancing on a razor-thin line between "frugal billionaire" and "capitalism-born monster," but Plummer delivers a stunning turn impressively reminiscent of Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.

On the flip side of this you have Michelle Williams' Gail Harris, who is made powerless by the situation she's facing, but battles through it with fortitude and grit -- provided to her with fantastic intensity by the performer. It's a transformative turn in its own right, with the actress putting on an interesting and very specific accent in the character, but it succeeds in rendering her invisible, the audience only seeing a grieving mother doing everything she can to try and get her child back. It's one of Williams' best pieces of work, which is actually saying a lot given her impressive resume.

All The Money In The World has fostered a great amount of attention and conversation thanks to its last minute casting alterations, and will probably always be remembered for exactly that. Of course, that's a double-edged sword. It's stunning to see what Ridley Scott was able to do with the inclusion of Christopher Plummer, but at the same time you are left wishing that there was more to the film to which the performance was added.

This morning, the nominations for the 75th annual Golden Globes were announced, and there were some surprises as well as some confirmed hits among the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But mixed into the field was a film that's yet to screen on a wide scale, yet has been talked about for quite some time now. With three nominations in an already crowded field, we really have to ask, is All The Money In The World an Oscar contender for frontrunners to fear?

First off, let's take a look at the nominations it picked up. All The Money In The World currently sits as nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role -- Drama (Christopher Plummer), Best Actress in a Leading Role -- Drama (Michelle Williams), and Best Director -- Drama (Ridley Scott). One key nomination that seems to be missing is the big ticket nomination for the film itself in the Best Picture -- Drama field, which one would assume would kind of be needed in order to convince the Academy that this is a film to be paid attention to. But with these three nominations, we can begin to make a case for either side.

In one sense, All The Money In The World can be seen as an Oscar threat, simply because of the fact that a film that came together in such a short time managed to be awards worthy after all. With Ridley Scott working at breakneck pace, and Michelle Williams along for the ride, the two collaborators have done a good enough job with the final product turned in that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (who nominates for the Golden Globes) believes their work merits rewarding. And if that wasn't enough, Christopher Plummer's nomination might have you believe that his short turn around as a replacement for Kevin Spacey's J. Paul Getty might have saved and/or improved the film.

However, the fact that All The Money In The World didn't manage to secure a Best Picture -- Drama does manage to stick out a little bit. While the nominations at hand do seem to indicate that Ridley Scott's film may pick up some fringe votes, it's not a good sign of whether the film will find itself in the Best Picture field of the Academy Awards. While there's a slate of up to 10 possible films that the Oscars can nominate, the films in both the Musical or Comedy and Drama fields for Best Picture at the Golden Globes are a strong slate. And since the Oscars aren't limited by genre, the competition is going to be fiercer than ever, as everything from comedies like The Disaster Artist and I,Tonya to dramas like The Post and The Shape of Water are going to be battling it out for those slots. It's not an impossible feat, but it's rather improbable if you look at it from a certain point of view.

With just three nominations for individual contributions, but no nod for the overall party, it looks like All The Money In The World could be a fringe film that the Golden Globes tends to honor with some consideration, only for the Academy Awards to go in a different direction. Anything can change between now and when All The Money In The World hits theaters. Not to mention, Oscar voting closes on January 13, 2018; which gives the film some time to pick up critical steam between now and the deadline. But with all of the other contenders already at somewhat of a head start, it definitely looks like Ridley Scott's latest is going to have more of an uphill battle to fight if it's going to get anywhere near its contemporaries. This year has already been a year of some pretty insane creative overhauls on movies -- from the expensive reshoots on Justice League to Solo: A Star Wars Story replacing Phil Lord and Chris Miller with Ron Howard behind the camera. That said, one of the most bizarre stories of the bunch has been the decision to recast Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer as J. Paul Getty in All the Money in the World after a series of sexual misconduct allegations came to light about the actor. Now Ridley Scott has finally opened up about the specific process of replacing Spacey, and how he went about doing it. Scott explained:

Ridley Scott made a point to acknowledge that was happy with Kevin Spacey's performance before the reveal of the allegations against the actor. However, he also noted that he couldn't be seen as tolerating that alleged behavior by keeping the performance in the movie. From there, Scott told EW he got to work quietly recasting Spacey with Christopher Plummer (reportedly his first choice anyway) and made the necessary calls to keep the project moving forward.

That ability to work quickly and discreetly seems to have paid off for Ridley Scott in the long run, as Christopher Plummer has already been able to step in and replace Kevin Spacey in the marketing material for All the Money in the World. In fact, a new trailer has already dropped featuring Plummer as the new J. Paul Getty, and it looks like everyone involved is working tooth and nail to put the Spacey allegations behind the movie.

All the Money in the World isn't the only high-profile project to take steps toward replacing Kevin Spacey after the sexual misconduct allegations that recently grabbed headlines. Netflix's House of Cards has similarly parted ways with the actor, and the show is reportedly exploring options to continue its sixth and final season without Frank Underwood. However, All the Money in the World feels unique because of how close it was to premiering when everything became public; it's arguably unprecedented for something like this to happen in Hollywood.

It's been about three weeks since Ridley Scott made the decision to remove Kevin Spacey from his upcoming movie All The Money In The World, to add Christopher Plummer, and to make the changes in time to hit the film's December 22 release date. It's hard to believe the movie managed such a quick turnaround, but here we are, just a few short weeks later with the full and brand new All The Money In The World trailer already out. While the first All the Money in the World trailer used The Zombies "Time of the Season" and young lead Charlie Plummer to introduce us to the world of the Gettys in the 1960s. This time around, there's no pomp or circumstance around the kidnapping. Instead, the new look at the movie starts by focusing on J. Paul Getty, whom the trailer pronounces as "the richest man in the world," nay not just the world, "the history of the world." We get a look at him relaxing on a shooting range and being the type of hardass who doesn't want to pay a cent to anyone who kidnapped one of his relatives. It's a quick glance, but it does show us how quickly the movie turned around once it decided to go in a new direction after the allegations came in.

Honestly, this whole thing is kind of interesting in terms of an audience perspective. Although many of us who aren't privy to the festival circuit haven't gotten to see All The Money in the World, yet, it's rare that we get to see what two completely different actors would bring to the same role. (At least on the big screen; this is less of a thing in the theater when casts change.) We've heard stories before about different actors or actresses competing for the same role and there's always an interesting facet to that, like, I wonder how Jennifer Lawrence would have been in Easy A instead of Emma Stone. Or I wonder how Pierce Brosnan would have been as Batman in a Tim Burton flick, right? In this case, we've seen Kevin Spacey in the trailer and we've seen Christopher Plummer, and it's a really unique experience to see how the trailer has changed, even if the circumstances for why the changes were made are not something we would hope for.

The movie world has been through the ringer over the past couple of months, as allegations about misbehavior among some of Hollywood's elite have started coming to light. Prominent among these were a set of allegations against Kevin Spacey, who has been alleged to have cornered several young men during the course of his work over the years. Spacey came out as gay after the first allegations, and as more stories have come to light, he has lost prominent jobs, including on Netflix's House of Cards and in All The Money in the World.

Last week, Sony Pictures announced that it was removing Kevin Spacey from its upcoming release All the Money in the World. Due to the sexual harassment allegations that have been directed towards the actor, director Ridley Scott has hired Christopher Plummer to play J. Paul Getty in Spacey's place. Less than a week after this re-casting was made public, Plummer has spoken about coming aboard to All the Money in the World, saying that while the situation involving Spacey is "very sad," he's also looking forward to working with Scott, especially since he was originally being eyed to play Getty in the feature. Plummer said:

Because Sony is determined to have All the Money in the World hit its original December release date, Plummer will begin his reshoots on November 20, which will include him filming with Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams. The process has been moving incredibly quickly, as Plummer told Vanity Fair that Ridley Scott called him early last week to offer him the J. Paul Getty role. Plummer is currently promoting his new movie The Man Who Invented Christmas, but clearly the prospect of working with Scott on a movie that he'd been interested in years back was enough for him to clear some space on his schedule at the last minute. Sony isn't sparing any expense on these reshoots either, as the studio is reportedly spending over $10 million on this endeavor, which includes Plummer potentially fetching between $250,000 and $400,000 for his involvement.

In recent years, reshoots have become a common practice in Hollywood. Whether it's because of story alterations after principal photography concluded or unexpected circumstances requiring new footage being shot, sometimes it's necessary to get the cameras rolling again months later. All the Money in the World's upcoming reshoots, however, are entirely out of the norm. The upcoming Sony movie is a little over a month away from release, and it was reported tonight that Christopher Plummer has been brought in to replace Kevin Spacey as industrialist J. Paul Getty.

In the wake of the sexual assault allegations that have been directed towards Kevin Spacey, Deadline dropped the news that director Ridley Scott, along with Imperative Entertainment's Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas, have decided to remove Kevin Spacey from All the Money in the World. Christopher Plummer will portray J. Paul Getty instead, and with the reshoots beginning "immediately," the movie is still expected to keep its December release date. Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg will also return for the reshoots. In its own write-up of the news, THR mentioned that Plummer was actually the original choice to play Getty in All the Money in the World, but the Sony executives wanted a bigger name for the role, hence why Spacey was hired.

All the Money in the World's recasting is the latest hit against Kevin Spacey following the numerous allegations made against him, which kicked off late last month when Star Trek Discovery actor Anthony Rapp said that Spacey sexually assaulted him back in 1986, when Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 26. Days later, Netflix cut ties with the actor, which included him being fired from House of Cards and his Gore Vidal biopic being scrapped. The NBC series This is Us also removed a reference to Spacey hours before the episode aired. Going back to All the Money in the World, while Spacey was advertised as one of the movie's leads, he only worked for eight to 10 days on it. Had his involvement been longer, you can bet it would have extremely difficult for Sony to reshoot all of his scenes with Christopher Plummer and still make the original release date. But evidently Ridley Scott and the creative minds involved believed they can still meet that deadline.

As iconic as Christopher Plummer's career has been, there are some roles that an actor just can't bring themselves to accept. In the case of Plummer's career, he found himself turning down a role that even Sean Connery himself would pass, eventually allowing the part to go to Sir Ian McKellen. That role is none other than Gandalf The Grey in Peter Jackson's Lord Of The Rings series.

While visiting Conan this week, it was mentioned that Plummer was actually on the list of actors offered the role of J.R.R. Tolkien's powerful wizard character. Yet despite being a fan of the franchise he grew up with and the extended stay in the beautiful New Zealand countryside, the famed actor felt that the commitment just wasn't for him. Or to put it more bluntly, his exact remark was, "I thought there are other countries I'd like to visit before I croak."

Now that's not to say that Christopher Plummer wouldn't have enjoyed a role in the Lord Of The Rings franchise. In fact, if you watch the interview a little further, there is most definitely a tinge of regret that fills the actor's voice, albeit in a comedic manner. However, thinking about the prospect in front of him, and how much of a fan he was, a remake of the Lord Of The Rings movies with a then unknown director must have sounded like something that three or four years in New Zealand might not have been worth. Actors of advancing age are clearly going to pick and choose their roles more carefully, and passing over the Tolkien trilogy was a calculated risk for Christopher Plummer's career. While it certainly didn't sink his career, one could only imagine what might have been, should he have accepted the position. At least his excuse for passing on Lord Of The Rings was better than Sean Connery's methodology; which saw him rejecting the film in favor for The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Still, it's good to know that Christopher Plummer saw himself on the path to winning an eventual Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, even if he passed up what could have been the role of a lifetime. Call it luck, or call it a very selective filmography, but Plummer's rejection of The Lord Of the Rings gave us an Ian McKellen performance that even he recognized as a warm and more suited for the role. Still, that didn't leave Plummer without a humorous exclamation of jealousy, as the eventual success of The Lord Of The Rings is probably the reason that Christopher Plummer claims that he, "hates that son of a bitch," Ian McKellen.

The stories about Terrence Malick are pervasive and almost mythical. A notorious recluse, it's extremely rare (in fact, nearly impossible) to catch him at an industry event or even the premiere of his films. He's obviously a master of his craft but since he makes films at a Kubrickian pace, he often drifts comfortably out of the public eye only to show up once a decade or so with a stunning piece of cinema. However, that doesn't stop the philosophical filmmaker from occasionally sharing his eccentricities with the world at large, like writing a letter to ensure the proper projection settings for all screenings of his gorgeously enigmatic Tree of Life.

Malick's idiosyncrasies know no bounds, a myth built upon stories of the man spending countless hours rewriting, shooting and especially editing his work in order to get the film exactly right. However, this very improvisational and extended mode of filmmaking doesn't sit well with everyone and at a recent round-table for The Daily Beast, Christopher Plummer, Academy Award favorite for Best Supporting Actor in Beginners, let it be known that one film with Malick, The New World, was more than enough for him. In fact, Plummer went so far as to write the director a note, "I gave him shit. I'll never work with him again... I told him, you're so boring you get in these ruts, you've got to get yourself a writer. My career with Mr. Malick is over."

It's rare for someone in the industry to be so honest but Plummer is 82 years old and still doing fantastic, award worthy work so I don't think his career will suffer from these comments. In fact, it's not that he's overly negative about the filmmaker (he actually praises a lot of the finished products) but instead the process in which Malick works. Take a look.

The interview is fascinating, especially since the stories seem to shock the other award caliber actors sitting in and listening - all except George Clooney who has had the (mis)fortune of working with Malick on The Thin Red Line. And for all Plummer's anecdotes, all his quibbles that forced him to write a not-so-nice letter to the director informing him of his need for a writer, the most egregious example of the filmmaker being oblivious to the needs of his actors is the recollection shared by Clooney regarding Adrien Brody's role in The Thin Red Line. It can't be easy to think you're the lead in a film, only to find out at a junket that you have zero lines. Ouch.

Plummer (and Clooney) still praise the undoubtedly talented Malick but not without serious reservations, with Plummer definitely saying that he would never work for the director again. I don't think it's a coincidence that there are very few, if any, actors who return to work with the director but perhaps now that he's a little more prolific, maybe he won't be able to deviate from the scripts as much and ensure that if you were cast as the film's lead, you'll still be the film's lead when you watch it in theaters how ever many months later. Poor Adrien Brody.

Most of us know Mélanie Laurent as one of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, but Laurent had a lengthy resume even before then. But being that they were all foreign films, very few in the US experienced her work. With her new international star status that’s all changing and now we’ve got the chance to see her latest release, the French film The Concert.

“I knew the movie of the director, there was a movie made before, and I was really honored to work with such an amazing director,” Laurent explained. But Radu Mihaileanu wasn’t the only thing that drew Laurent to The Concert. “The script was really amazing because it’s popular and emotional and a challenge with the violin, so I was really excited to be involved in that project.”

The story is about a former conductor, Andrei Filipov (Aleksei Guskov). In his heyday he directed the famous Bolshoi orchestra, but when he was publically criticized for including Jewish performers in his group, his renowned career came to an end. Now he’s merely a janitor where the Bolshoi perform. However, one day, that works to his advantage. He intercepts a fax inviting the Bolshoi to play at the Châtelet Theater in Paris and opts to seize the opportunity for himself, reassemble his old musicians and head to Paris pretending to be the Bolshoi.

That’s where Laurent comes in as the famous violinist, Anne-Marie Jacquet. One of Filipov’s group’s many demands is that Anne-Marie accompany them. We’re well aware of the fact that Laurent can handle a gun, but what about a violin? She admitted, “I used to play piano when I was five then I stopped, but the challenge of the violin was really really great for me because it was hard but I had a lot of fun doing this and the training was really interesting.”

What’s even more interesting is what that training entailed. It can take a musician a lifetime to be able to play with an esteemed orchestra. Laurent said, “You can’t learn violin in two months, so I just learned how to pretend I’m a violinist.” But she wasn’t totally faking it. Laurent actually had to learn how to play, but only with her left hand. “The training was about being on the good chords at the right moment and to play violin like a violinist, to move like a violinist.” So where does the right hand come from? “They took another musician with small arms and small hands [laughs], and it’s a special effect.”

On the other hand, the emotion Laurent had to portray is as raw as can be. The Concert is a comedy, but nearly every funny moment is reserved for the fake Bolshoi members. The power of Laurent’s role comes from her reaction to their hysteria. She puts on a fine performance from the moment she steps on screen, but the film’s grand finale is an absolutely profound display of passion, so much so that I couldn’t even imagine how Laurent could find that scene anything but taxing. However, the experience was the exact opposite for her. “I didn’t work on the emotion, it just happened,” she explained. “I just loved being on stage and pretending I’m a violinist. It was an amazing moment. I remember we worked on that scene for almost two weeks and I didn’t want to leave. [Laughs] I could stay forever on stage.”

Lucky for Laurent, she’s got some serious musical talent even when her right hand isn’t being digitally rendered. She’s actually busy working on an album with Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice. “I have a studio in my house and I’m singing everyday.” She added, “I hope I’m going to be on tour in the US with that record.” The distribution plan has yet to be finalized, so that tour likely won’t be happening anytime in the near future, but when it does, I’m sure Laurent’s Inglorious Basterds fans will come out in full force.

In the meantime not only is Inglorious Basterds good for multiple viewings and The Concert in theaters now, but Laurent also has a few more film projects on the way. “I did an independent movie called Beginners with Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer,” said Laurent. On top of that she also revealed, “I have a lot of French projects. I’m going to direct my own movie in November and I’m shooting right now a movie in France.” That movie is a comedy called Et soudain, tout le monde me manqué, which according to an online translator means And Suddenly, Everybody Misses Me. It’s “with an actor called Michel Blanc, which is funny because I worked with him as a director nine years ago.” He’s playing her father in the film.

So Laurent’s work is clearly overseas-centric, but she’s eager to return to Hollywood should the opportunity arise. Referring to Inglorious Basterds, she explained, “That experience was just a dream, so yeah, if I could live another dream, I’m ready for that.” She’s certainly more than welcome here and I’ve got a feeling I’m just one of many who hopes she returns to the states whether it’s for another big budget production or maybe even for her music tour very soon.
