As demonstrated through five years of making The Crown – a series featuring the likes of Claire Foy, Matt Smith, Vanessa Kirby, Oliva Colman, Helena Bonham Carter, Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce and many more – Peter Morgan knows how to put a stellar ensemble cast together, and it appears that he is once again utilizing that skill for his next project. The veteran writer will soon be starting production on a new adaptation of author Ira Levin's 1976 novel The Boys From Brazil, and he has brought together some phenomenal talent to tell the dramatic story on screen.

According to Variety, Netflix is officially moving forward with Morgan's limited series, which will have a five-episode run, and the cast that has been brought together includes Jeremy Strong, Gillian Anderson, Shira Haas, Daniel Brühl, August Diehl, and Lizzy Caplan. Anderson's inclusion is notable, as she previously worked with the showrunner playing Margaret Thatcher in Seasons 3 and 4 of The Crown, but it's also noteworthy that this will be the third time that Brühl and Diehl have worked together (the other two titles being Inglourious Basterds and The King's Man).

Jeremy Strong – who has recently been working on The Social Reckoning with writer/director Aaron Sorkin – will be playing Yakov Liebermann, a Holocaust survivor who makes it his life mission to search the globe for Nazi fugitives and bring them to justice (the character inspired by the legendary work of Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal). In the decades-spanning story, a plot is uncovered that sees a scientist named Dr. Johann-Friedrich Meinhardt (August Diehl) is living in South America and working on an experiment to create biological clones of Adolf Hitler.

This marks the second time that The Boys From Brazil has been adapted, as directed Franklin J. Schaffner previously helmed a 1978 feature memorably starring Gregory Peck, James Mason, and Laurence Olivier. The series is Peter Morgan's first project since The Crown concluded in 2023 – his filmography also including standout titles such as Frost/Nixon (based on his play of the same name), The Last King Of Scotland, The Queen, and Rush.

Filming of the new limited series will be an international affair, as production is set to begin next month and will take place in the UK, Germany, Bulgaria and Spain. Unfortunately, one bit of information we don't presently have is a targeted release date (the earliest it could arrive for Netflix subscribers is probably late 2026).

Given all of the talent involved, one expects that this will be a very high-profile project on Netflix's upcoming slate, so stay tuned for more updates about the project as it moves further through development and we get more news about what's in store.

The Ron Howard-directed Rush came out in 2013, which was right around the time I became a fan of Formula 1. That was the last time I saw the movie, which was based on a true story, starring Chris Hemsworth (just as he was about to become a franchise movie superstar) as James Hunt and Daniel Brühl as Niki Lauda. I had been seriously following the sport for about a year, and when the movie was released, I went on opening weekend. I was so excited. I loved it.

Formula 1 has found a new level of popularity in the United States in recent years. Netflix’s Drive To Survive is wildly popular, and Brad Pitt has a movie about F1 (called, simply, F1) coming out next month. The biggest race of the F1 calendar will be happening in the South of France on May 25. The Monaco Grand Prix, a legendary race known all over the world, is set to kick off on Sunday, and you can watch it with a Disney Plus/Hulu/ESPN Plus Bundle subscription.

In preparation for the Monaco GP, I sat down to watch Rush again, and while I still think the movie has some amazing moments and some fantastic performances, I was frustrated at the end. Today, I know a whole lot more about F1, both the history of the motor sport and how races are won and lost. Rush has some great racing sequences, but it gets much of the history wrong, and even some aspects of the races are wildly inaccurate. Let’s get into it.

The Rivalry Between Hunt And Lauda Was Intense, But Not Nearly So Tense

James Hunt and Niki Lauda were two of the top racers on the circuit in the mid-’70s. For three years, between the 1975 and 1977 seasons, they built an intense rivalry. Lauda won the championship in ‘75 and ‘77, and Hunt won in 1976. The movie is mostly about Hunt's winning year, in part because Lauda suffered a horrific crash at the Nürburgring towards the end of the season.

I won’t recap the story of the ‘76 championship, as the movie does a decent job of explaining the nuts and bolts of it. What I did get annoyed with was how Hunt and Lauda’s rivalry and relationship were pretty distorted throughout the movie. It’s true that they had a rivalry with each other, but it was much friendlier than the movie portrays. Hunt’s son even remembers the two being roommates early in their careers.

In the film, the two characters have a serious disdain for each other, something that just wasn’t true in real life, by any account. Sure, they might have talked a lot of trash to each other, and the two of them definitely fought hard on the track to beat one another, but they respected each other and their driving skills. That is something completely lost in the movie. They just hate each other for most of it, but seemingly begrudgingly accept each other’s place in F1.

That Wasn’t The Only History That Was Stretched, Either

It's not unique for movies to be historically inaccurate, but Rush is especially frustrating. In the movie, after Lauda holds his first press conference post-accident, a reporter asks him how he expects his marriage to survive after his disfigurement. Hunt takes exception to the question (understandably) and beats up the reporter after the presser. There is no evidence that this ever happened. It’s a fabricated story, likely included to show that despite their disdain, Hunt respected Lauda. There would be no need for such a scene had the truth about their friendship been present in the movie.

This goes for the final scene in the movie, too, when Lauda and Hunt meet at an airport and talk through their apparent differences, finally shaking hands in a sort of peace between the two. Again, there would be no need for this kind of silliness if their relationship had been portrayed accurately. Sure, it makes for a great resolution to the movie, but it was a meeting that never occurred and wouldn’t have gone down that way if it had.

The Racing Scenes Were Off, Too

Before I get too into this, I will say that many of the racing scenes are fantastic. The sequences are what make this a good movie. However, some of the ways the racing is depicted just aren’t all that reflective of what real F1 looks like. Unlike NASCAR, where “rubbin’ is racin’,” in F1, the drivers do everything they can to avoid contact with anything, especially their fellow drivers.

There are a few scenes that appear to show Hunt and Lauda bumping tires with each other, and while I suppose it could have happened, there’s no way it happened as often or as hard as it did. F1 cars are powerful but delicate machines. They aren’t stock cars like in NASCAR, that can handle some abuse; tiny bits of damage to any part of the car can greatly affect their performance. Not to mention that the cars are light, and even a slight bump can send them flying out of control. To avoid all of this, drivers are careful not to hit each other, lest both be in danger of crashing.

I Still Like The Movie, Just A Little Less

I think, in the end, if this had been a fictional story, instead of being “based on a true story,” I would have enjoyed Rush much more. It’s a great movie, with a lot of fantastic moments, both on and off the track. The acting, especially from Hemsworth and Brühl, is fantastic. The action scenes are exciting and leave you on the edge of your seat. It’s a great looking movie. It’s slick, fast-paced, and full of glamor, which are all reflective of F1.

It isn’t a true story, though, not in the strictest sense, and now that I’ve been a fan of the racing league for a long time, and I know much more about its history, the movie leaves me frustrated for not being a better-told story. James Hunt and Niki Lauda are legends in F1, and their real-life friendship was inspiring, so why mess around with that? At least I have F1 to look forward to on the 2025 movie schedule, and that is a fictional story.

From all accounts, many of the various stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have become good friends in real life. A great deal of that may have taken place during the production of Captain America: Civil War as Robert Downey Jr apparently invited much of the cast to lunch, though Sebastian Stan didn’t get an early invite for… reasons.

A clip from the press conference back when Captain America: Civil War was released has recently gone viral on Instagram, which includes members of the cast discussing that Robert Downey Jr. would occasionally invite other members of the cast to lunch. Downey apparently had a very nice trailer set up, which Anthony Mackie says made the invite very coveted, and he was jealous when Daniel Brühl got the call. Mackie said…

Exactly what the other actors had to do to get invited isn’t clear, though it sounds like everybody got invited at least once. Daniel Bruhl says when he first met Robert Downey Jr. the Iron Man actor asked him what allergies he had, making the new member of the MCU very confused.

Sebastian Stan it seems did get invited to RDJ’s table at some point, but it took longer than it might have. Downey says Stan sent him a video of the Team Cap member working out that scared Downey a bit. He explained…

Maybe this is why everybody inside the MCU is so excited that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to play Doctor Doom. Since he’ll be back in Avengers: Doomsday, maybe that means the return of the RDJ Lunch Hour. It sounds like the actor ate quite well and was more than happy to share that with the rest of the cast.

There simply hasn't been a star on his level since he left the MCU. Perhaps that's part of the reason that the recent movies have been seen as struggles. Fans may not be as excited without that star power. Though I'm sure Brie Larson would be happy to buy everybody lunch, too.

Of course, we’re expecting the cast of Avengers: Doomsday to be quite large. Hopefully there will be enough shooting days with Downey on set that everybody will get at least one good lunch.

Daniel Brühl is a talented actor who brought one of Marvel's best villains, Helmut Zemo, and a key reason to revisit before watching The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you’ve seen the Marvel movies in order, you know the actor had an impactful role in Captain America: Civil War, where he effectively dismantled the Avengers. Daniel’s Zemo has since become a fan favorite. His dynamic with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes as part of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier cast showcased a new, more complex side of the character, solidifying his place in the hearts of MCU fans. In a recent interview, Daniel addresses his possible MCU return.

Speaking to ScreenRant about his new series Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, the Inglourious Basterds actor discussed the likelihood of reprising his Marvel role. Reflecting on his character’s survival in the MCU, he expressed optimism about a future return. While the villain is not confirmed for any upcoming Marvel projects, Brühl's confidence suggests it's just a matter of time before he reappears. He told the outlet:

Despite the Rush actor’s absence from the 2025 movie lineup, which notably includes Thunderbolts, his return feels inevitable given Zemo’s significant role in the comics as the leader of the Thunderbolts team. The decision to include lesser-known characters like Ghost and Taskmaster over the Baron has puzzled fans, but it leaves room for a potential surprise appearance. Zemo’s storyline in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier saw him working alongside Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, creating a frenemy dynamic that could seamlessly transition into future MCU narratives.

Similarly, the forthcoming Captain America: Brave New World presents another plausible opportunity for the Baron’s return. Given his previous interactions with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, it wouldn’t be far-fetched for the purple-masked baddie to make a cameo, perhaps aiding in a specific situation that calls for his unique expertise. This would mark a fitting return to the Captain America storyline after his debut in Civil War.

The last time we saw Zemo, he was imprisoned in the Raft by the Dora Milaje. It's possible that an escape from this high-security prison could be connected to the events of a potential third Black Panther movie. In this scenario, the criminal genius could be pursued by Shuri, the new protector of Wakanda, seeking justice for the murder of King T'Chaka.

With Brühl's confidence and his character’s popularity, the character undoubtedly has more stories to tell within the MCU. Whether it's in the intriguing Thunderbolts, the anticipated Captain America: Brave New World, or even a future Black Panther installment, Zemo's return would add depth and intrigue to the ever-expanding Marvel universe. The Alienist star’s enthusiasm and Marvel's knack for reviving beloved characters suggest that Helmut’s journey is far from over, leaving Marvel fans intrigued about his potential roles in these future projects.

Captain America (whether he’s being played by Anthony Mackie or Chris Evans) and The Winter Soldier are one of the best duos in the MCU. When The Falcon and The Winter Soldier premiered we got to see that point proven as Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s chemistry shined as they played reluctant-turned-good friends. The two undeniably are a great pair, so it’s a bummer that we won’t see them together as the Disney+ series isn’t getting a second season, and, as far as we know, they won’t be in the same upcoming Marvel movies. It turns out the Sam Wilson actor is also bummed about this too, and I can totally understand why.   

It’s a well-known fact that Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are great friends and quite the dynamic hilarious duo both on and off-screen. Whether they’re bickering as Sam and Bucky on screen, or poking fun at each other and Tom Holland in real life, they’re a blast to watch, and they’ve made it clear that they have a blast working together too. So, while speaking with Radio Times, Mackie explained that he’s bummed The Falcon and The Winter Soldier didn’t get a Season 2, because it means he won’t get to work with his co-star:

Along with Stan, Mackie also brought up Daniel Brühl, who reprised his role as Helmut Zemo in the Disney+ series. All-in-all they were quite the chaotic trio, and they were hilarious together. That chemistry on-screen came from the fact that they love being together off-screen, and as the Captain America actor said, working with them is “the perfect storm of happiness.” 

Considering all this, I totally get why he’s bummed that his show didn’t get a Season 2, even though both he and Stan are set to lead upcoming MCU projects. Being able to collaborate with friends is always the best, and making anything is always way more fun when you’re doing it with people you love. 

Based on what we’ve learned about Captain America: Brave New World and what we know about Thunderbolts, Mackie and Stan likely won’t appear on screen together. The Sam Wilson actor has been busy working on the fourth Cap film, and the Bucky Barnes actor is set to join the Thunderbolts ensemble as filming really gets going.

Of course, both projects are exciting. I can’t wait to see Mackie with the rest of the Captain America: Brave New World cast together as it has many new exciting additions, like Harrison Ford. And when it comes to Thunderbolts, the cast of anti-heroes they’ve assembled – including Florence Pugh’s Yelena, David Harbour’s Red Guardian and Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent – is quite literally epic. Plus, both movies will feature multiple folks from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier cast, as Russell and Stan will star in Thunderbolts while Mackie reunites with Danny Ramirez and Carl Lumbly in Cap’s movie.

However, the dynamic duo that makes up the title won’t be together, sadly. 

Hopefully, someday we’ll get to see Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan back together as Captain America and The Winter Soldier. In the meantime, we should get excited about these upcoming movies that are both slated to come out in 2025 by using a Disney+ subscription to rewatch The Flacon and The Winter Soldier along with all the Marvel movies in order to see how this hilarious friendship flourished in the MCU. 

World War I movies are a rarity when compared to other military conflicts like World War II and the Vietnam War, but that has been changing in recent years with titles like Sam Mendes’ Academy Award-winning drama, 1917, and Peter Jackson’s documentary, They Shall Not Grow Old. However, there have been some greats over the years like Paths of Glory, Johnny Got His Gun, and All Quiet on the Western Front, which has now been remade into a stunning new Netflix movie showcasing the horror, pain, and suffering of “the war to end all wars.”

One of the many book-to-film adaptations on the 2022 movie schedule, this epic anti-war film told from the perspective of German soldiers and military officials (the book on which it was based was written by Erich Maria Remarque, a German WWI veteran) features an incredible group of actors who may or may not be familiar to English-speaking audiences. Felix Kammerer (Paul Bäumer)

Front and center in the All Quiet on the Western Front cast is Felix Kammerer, who portrays the film’s central protagonist Paul Bäumer, a young German soldier who experiences hell on the battlefield in the final year of the war.

Despite being one of the main characters in the Netflix epic anti-war film, this is only the young actor’s second professional gig, and first as an adult, as his first movie — 1998’s David im Wunderland — saw him gave a performance as a young child.

Daniel Brühl (Matthias Erzberger)

Daniel Brühl, one of the most well-known members of the All Quiet on the Western Front cast, appears in the movie as German writer and politician Matthias Erzberger, a real-life figure who became one of the biggest opponents of World War I despite initially supporting it early on.

Brühl, who also serves as one of the executive producers, has long been a prolific actor on a global scale, with movies like Good Bye, Lenin!, The Bourne Ultimatum, Inglourious Basterds, and The King’s Man. However, he is probably best known for his portrayal of the all-time great villain, Helmut Zemo, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; first in Captain America: Civil War, a.k.a. one of the best Marvel movies, and then later in the Disney+ streaming series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Over the years, Brühl has also appeared on shows like The Alienist, The Trip, Tartor, and Verbotene Liebe.

Albrecht Schuch (Stanislaus ‘Kat’ Katczinsky)

Taking on the role of Stanislaus “Kat” Katczinsky is Albrecht Schuch, who portrays the older, more experienced, and positive leader of a group of soldiers that includes Paul Bäumer and multiple other young men.

Throughout his career, which goes back to a 2009 role in the German TV movie, Bei uns und um die Ecke, Schuch has bounced between the silver screen and small screen with appearances in movies like Fabian — Going to the Dogs, Berlin Alexanderplatz, Atlas, Measuring the Wind, and Westwind, as well as shows like Bad Banks, NSU German History X, and NeoParadise, to name only a few.

Aaron Hilmer (Albert Kropp)

Aaron Hilmer shows up in All Quiet on the Western Front as Albert Kropp, one of Paul Bäumer’s comrades and friends from school when the two, like so many other young Germans, are sent off to war.

Although he is not all that well known in the United States, Hilmer has had an extensive career in film and TV since making his professional acting debut in the 2012 short, Cowboy und Indianer. Since then, he has landed prominent roles on shows like The Last Word, The Island, and Preis der Freiheit. He has also appeared in movies like The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, Schrotten!, and Sex, Pity and Loneliness during that same stretch of time.

Moritz Klaus (Franz Müller)

Moritz Klaus appears in the cast as Franz Müller, another one of Paul Bäumer’s school friends and later a fellow soldier after volunteering to help out with the war effort.

Throughout his career, which dates back to the early 2000s, Klaus has appeared on a number of German TV series like Post Mortem, The Red Band Society, Nortuf Hafenkante, and Phoenixsee, as well as a number of made-for-TV movies like The Lost Brother, Relations, and The Hidden World.

Edin Hasanovic (Tjaden Stackfleet)

Taking on the role of Tjaden Stackfleet in All Quiet on the Western Front is Edin Hasanovic, who plays one of Paul’s young friends from before the war.

No stranger when it comes to Netflix, Hasanovic previously appeared on the 2019 sci-fi series, Skylines, which was a spinoff of the disaster movie Skyline. The German actor also shared the screen with Army of the Dead breakout Matthias Schweighöfer on the Amazon original series You Are Wanted. His other credits include movies like Only God Can Judge Me, Hey Bunny, and A Heavy Heart, as well as shows like Shades of Guilt, Familie Braun, and Queens of Comedy.

Adrian Grünewald (Ludwig Behm)

Adrian Grünewald appears in the All Quiet on the Western Front cast as Ludwig Behm, another young soldier who experiences the brutal reality of war in the trenches.

Prior to landing a role in the highly-anticipated military drama, Grünewald made a name for himself with roles on shows like The Island, Labyrinth of Peace, and Eden, all of which were released within the past three years.

Thibault De Montalembert (General Ferdinand Foch)

Appearing as French General Ferdinand Foch is Thibault de Montalembert.

Throughout his career, de Montalembert has been a fixture of French film, TV, and theatre, appearing in dozens upon dozens of productions dating back to the late 1980s. This includes shows like The Tunnel and Call My Agent!, movies like Lovers, The Sentinel, and The Little Apocalypse, and more. He’s also a major force in the world of dubbing, as he has been the French voice of actors like Hugh Grant (Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Love Actually), Antonio Banderas (Spy Kids, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over), and countless French-dubbed movies over the years.

Devid Striesow (General Friedrich)

And, taking on the role of Germany’s General Friedrich is Devid Striesow.

Over the years, Striesow has appeared in Academy Award-winning foreign films like The Counterfeiters, dramas like This Is Love, and comedies like I’m Off Then. He has also landed roles on shows like The Old Fox, Dignity, and several others dating back to the late 20th Century.

All Quiet on the Western Front is currently streaming for anyone with a Netflix subscription. In 2015, a year dominated by spy movies, the one that stood out for its sheer originality and bold zaniness was Kingsman: The Secret Service - based on Mark Millar’s popular Icon Comics series - which spawned an even more bizarre sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, two years later. Co-writer and director Matthew Vaughn has returned for a third installment called The King’s Man, which will focus on the origins of the titular intelligence agency during the early 20th Century.

Of course, as is the case for most prequels, The King’s Man cast employs a whole new (and very exciting) ensemble, including two-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes. We shall start with him as we explore who is playing who (a phrase that may actually have more than one meaning in this case) in one of the most anticipated 2021 movies. 

Ralph Fiennes (Orlando, Duke Of Oxford)

Leading The King’s Man cast as Orlando, a Kingsman member (and the Duke of Oxford), is Ralph Fiennes, who has previous experience in comic book movies (Alfred in The LEGO Batman Movie) and spy movies (James Bond’s “M” since Skyfall). Of course, his most famous franchise is the Harry Potter movies, in which he played the ruthless Voldemort. 

The Shakespearean-trained performer is one of cinema’s most respected British actors today with two Oscar nominations (Schindler’s List in 1993 and 1997’s The English Patient) to prove it. His resume is full of plenty more Oscar-nominated films such as The Constant Gardener from 2005, Martin McDonough’s dark comedy In Bruges in 2008, Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, and the animated Kubo and the Two Strings, just to name a few.

Harris Dickinson (Conrad Oxford)

As Ralph Fiennes’ onscreen son, Conrad, in The King’s Man, we have Harris Dickinson, who made his critically acclaimed feature-length film debut in the coming-of-age, LGBTQ+ drama Beach Rats in 2017. The British actor was cast as real-life kidnapping victim J. Paul Getty III in the FX miniseries Trust the following year. 

Also in 2018, he played a telekinetic teen in The Darkest Minds, but had an even bigger year in 2019 when he joined Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance cast as Gurjin and appeared in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil as Prince Phillip. In 2022, Dickinson will appear in another sequel (The Souvenir Part II) and the star-studded mystery drama Where the Crawdads Sing.

Gemma Arterton (Polly Wilkins)

Previously working with Ralph Fiennes in Clash of the Titans before appearing on The King’s Man cast as the trigger-happy Polly Wilkins is Gemma Arterton. The fellow Brit already knows a thing or two about kicking some ass onscreen. 

Gemma Arterton previously appeared in Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla in 2008, the video game movie Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in 2010, and 2013’s action-packed reinterpretation of a Grimm Brothers’ classic, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, as Gretel. Outside of action movies, Arterton has also appeared in comedies like Netflix’s Murdery Mystery and led the cast of the FX/BBC produced, miniseries period drama Black Narcissus in 2020.

Rhys Ifans (Grigori Rasputin)

Playing an exaggerated version of Grigori Rasputin in The King’s Man is an almost completely unrecognizable Rhys Ifans. Like Ralph Fiennes, Ifans is also a veteran of comic book movies (Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012 and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home), the Harry Potter movies (Xenophilius Lovegood), spy movies (Oliver Stone’s Snowden, if that counts), and playing Oxford-based royalty (Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous in 2011). 

Ifans is also well known for playing Hugh Grant’s roommate in 1999’s Notting Hill and starring in period pieces like Elizabeth: The Golden Age. The fantasy genre has also been a recurrence in Ifans’ career and which will continue with HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, House of Dragons.

Matthew Goode (Morton)

Our next (and certainly not last) comic book veteran on The King’s Man cast is Matthew Goode. The British actor started getting noticed as Mandy Moore’s love interest in Chasing Liberty and Scarlett Johansson’s cuckolded love interest in Match Point before playing Ozymandias in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen in 2009. 

Goode has also done various period pieces both on the big screen (such as 2008’s Brideshead Revisited and The Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch in 2014) and the small screen (he landed recurring roles on both the Downton Abbey cast and on Netflix’s The Crown). In 2022, the Silent Night star will reprise his role as the vampiric Matthew Clairmont on the romantic supernatural drama A Discovery of Witches for its third season.

Tom Hollander (King George/Kaiser Wilhelm/Tsar Nicholas)

Juggling three roles in The King’s Man (namely King George, Kaiser Wilhelm, and Tsar Nicholas) is Tom Hollander. This actor began to gain notoriety as part of the ensemble cast of Robert Altman’s 2001 murder mystery Gosford Park and 2005’s Pride & Prejudice adaptation before playing an antagonist of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies called Lord Cutler Beckett. 

In fact, Tom Hollander has played a number of antagonistic characters, such as Lance Corkoran on the acclaimed AMC miniseries The Night Manager and the unhinged Gary in Netflix’s Bird Box in 2018. Among his better known roles as of late, Hollander played long-time Queen manager Jim Beach in Bohemian Rhapsody and made his comic book adaptation debut on HBO Max’s animated Harley Quinn series as the voice of Alfred Pennyworth in 2020.

Daniel Brühl (Erik Jan Hanussen)

Yet another The King’s Man cast member with previous comic book adaptation experience is the Spanish-born, German-raised Daniel Brühl, who plays real-life Austrian-Jewish charlatan Erik Jan Hanussen in the film. American audiences began to take interest in Daniel Brühl after he played Nazi soldier turned autobiographical movie star Fredrick Zoller on Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds cast. 

However, he is even better known internationally by now as Zemo in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and on Disney+’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier cast in 2021. He also has two Golden Globes for 2013’s competitor driver biopic Rush and TNT’s suspenseful period drama The Alienist and made his directorial debut in 2021 with the Berlin-set social commentary Next Door, which he also stars in.

Djimon Hounsou (Shola)

As Kingsman agent Shola, we have Djimon Honsou, who has starred in Marvel movies (and lent his voice to Disney+’s What If…? cast) as the Kree warrior Korath. However, he has also appeared in DC movies Constantine, Aquaman, Shazam!. 

Djimon Hounsou also has two Oscar nominations for Steven Spielberg’s Amistad and the International crime thriller Blood Diamond and also starred in the Best Picture-winner Gladiator between them. The King’s Man is only the latest franchise endeavor that Hounsou has participated in after starring in How To Train Your Dragon 2, Furious 7, and A Quiet Place Part II most recently.

Charles Dance (Herbert Kitchener)

As real-life, World War I-era British Army officer Herbert Kitchener, we have Charles Dance, whose long and esteemed career is filled with connections to most of his fellow The King’s Man cast members. He played a Bond villain in 1981’s For Your Eyes Only, starred in Gosford Park and Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, and  was Tywin Lannister on the Game of Thrones cast. 

Charles Dance also had a recurring role on Netflix's The Crown and will soon star on the streaming platform's series adaptation of the DC comic The Sandman. Dance has also worked with director David Fincher on Alien 3 and the 2020 Netflix original Mank, was part of the Underworld movies cast, and played the main human villain of Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019.

Saving the world has not looked so old school since… well, the first Kingsman movie, probably. For that, you need an ensemble who know what they are doing and that describes The King’s Man cast to a T.

I remember when Brad Pitt was easily the biggest name in the Inglourious Basterds cast (despite not actually being the main character) when it first came out in 2009. Arguably, he still is, but after Christoph Waltz earned his first Oscar, Diane Kruger became a household name, and Michael Fassbender and others started doing superhero movies, Quentin Tarantino’s World War II epic (very, very loosely inspired by the 1978 B-grade period piece The Inglorious Bastards) soon became a star-studded modern classic. Those stars have had a lot of notable movies, TV shows, and more on their plates since changing history with a loud bang, so, let’s see what they are up to these days, starting with our American hero.

Brad Pitt (Lt. Aldo “The Apache” Raine)

Technically, this superstar first collaborated with his Inglourious Basterds director for 1992’s Quentin Tarantino-penned, Tony Scott-directed True Romance before playing Lt. Aldo Raine (one of Brad Pitt’s most badass characters), and his Oscar-winning Once Upon a Time in Hollywood role as Cliff Booth.

He later starred in more grounded World War II-era dramas (2014’s Fury and Allied in 2016), sort of followed X-Men movies star Michael Fassbender’s footsteps by making one of the funniest superhero movie cameos as Vanisher, and even became The Jim Jefferies Show’s Weatherman on Comedy Central. Pitt is reuniting with Deadpool 2 director David Leitch for 2022’s Bullet Train (also starring his Lost City of D co-star Sandra Bullock), is teaming up with Damien Chazelle for the first time with Babylon, and has many upcoming producer credits, such as an adaptation of the horror graphic novel, Black Hole.

Mélanie Laurent (Shosanna Dreyfus)

I believe Inglourious Basterds’ true hero is Shosanna, played by Mélanie Laurent - who was previously known best for having Pierre Laurent, voice actor for the French-language version of The Simpsons, as a father. Playing the resilient Jewish refugee led to roles in more American films, such as the Academy Award-winning Beginners in 2010, the 2013 magic show/heist thriller combo Now You See Me, Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy the same year, a true Nazi-hunting story called Operation Finale, and two Netflix movies - including 6 Underground with Ryan Reynolds and Oxygen in 2021.

Laurent still stars in and even helms French-language films to this day, including The Mad Women’s Ball (premiering exclusively on Amazon Prime September 17, 2021), but also a new English-language directorial feature in the works, called The Nightingale, starring sisters Elle Fanning and Dakota Fanning.

Christoph Waltz (Col. Hans “The Jew Hunter” Landa)

Other than Hitler, of course, the biggest thorn in Aldo and Shosanna’s sides is Col. Hans Landa - played to Academy Award-winning perfection by Austrian-born Christoph Waltz, who also worked almost exclusively in Europe before Inglourious Basterds. Quentin Tarantino directed him in a second (and more heroic) Oscar-winning performance from 2012’s Django Unchained, before Waltz revisited his villainous talent in comedies like Horrible Bosses 2 or even series like Quibi’s Most Dangerous Game, to name a few, in addition to another kindly mentor role in Alita: Battle Angel from 2019.

Next, Waltz is starring in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, reprising his Bond villain role in No Time to Die, playing Mikhail Gorbachev opposite Michael Douglas’ Ronald Regan in a miniseries about their 1986 meeting, and is voicing a fox for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, most notably.

Diane Kruger (Bridget Von Hammersmark)

Secretly working against Landa and the Third Reich is German actress Bridget von Hammersmark - played by German actress Diane Kruger, who actually broke into American cinema pretty early before landing starring roles in films like Troy (opposite Inglourious Basterds' Brad Pitt) and the National Treasure movies with Nicolas Cage. She would then go back and forth between playing more heroes (such as a Texas detective on FX’s The Bridge), more antagonists (like in the 2013 Stephenie Meyer movie The Host), and another World War II-inspired femme fatale in Robert Zemeckis’ Welcome to Marwen from 2018.

Netflix’s The 355 was originally set to be next of Kruger’s 2021 movies before it was postponed to the 2022 movies schedule and, unless Quibi’s serialized Swimming with Sharks remake does not find a new home soon, you will likely see her next in the romantic drama, First Love.

Eli Roth (Sgt. Donny “The Bear Jew” Donowitz)

While better known for directing and cameoing in horror movies, Eli Roth was appointed by friend and collaborator Quentin Tarantino (who helped produced the Hostel movies) to star in Inglourious Basterds as Sgt. Donny Donowitz and direct Nation’s Pride - the film-within-a-film where its premiere is the setting of the explosive third act. The director has since branched out slightly beyond his typical gore fests to dabble in the action genre (his 2018 Death Wish remake with Bruce Willis), and even family films (The House with a Clock in its Walls) and documentaries (Fin - his upcoming investigation of shark deaths). Speaking of, his AMC docuseries History of Horror has been renewed for a third season you can expect in 2021, and his adaptation of the popular video game Borderlands is expected to hit theaters the following year.

Michael Fassbender (Lt. Archie Hicox)

Appearing as British Army officer and Basterds ally Lt. Archie Hicox for less than 20 minutes in Inglourious Basterds was enough to pave the way for Michael Fassbender to become one of the most acclaimed and busiest actors of his time. Soon after, he would be cast in the Marvel movies (not the MCU, however) as Magneto, earn two Oscar nominations (for the Brad Pitt-produced 12 Years a Slave, and the Aaron Sorkin-penned Steve Jobs), tried his hand at video game movies with Assassin’s Creed, and joined the Alien movies franchise as two different android characters.

Fassbender will next star in Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins, appear in a feature-length sequel to the hit Kung Fury short, work with director David Fincher on The Killer, and rumors suggest Mel Gibson’s The Wild Bunch remake may be his latest western.

Daniel Brühl (Fredrick Zoller)

Playing Nazi turned film star Fredrick Zoller in Inglourious Basterds also proved to be a star-making turn for Daniel Brühl, whose biggest role in the American mainstream had been a small part in The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007. His next antagonistic role in a period piece was Formula One racer Niki Lauda (opposite Chris Hemsworth) in Rush before later playing a respectable 19th-Century psychiatrist on the TNT series The Alienist, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination.

Brühl recently played Baron Zemo a second time in Disney+’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier cast, will star in a different sort of comic book flick with Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service prequel The King’s Man, and is re-enlisting into the German Army for the First World War with a new adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque.

Til Schweiger (Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz)

While a fair share of American audiences might not have known Til Schweiger before Inglourious Basterds burned the name Hugo Stiglitz into their brains, he has been acting in English-language releases since the late 1990s, including 2003’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life opposite Angelina Jolie, and the raunchy Rob Schneider comedy Deuce Bigalow: European Gigalo in 2005.

Despite his subsequent fame from films like 2011’s The Three Musketeers or Muppets Most Wanted in 2014 (both also starring Christoph Waltz), the German actor and filmmaker’s most recent American film appearance was in Atomic Blonde from 2018. However, he is still working steadily in front of and behind the camera and will soon appear alongside the likes of Ben Foster and Michael Caine in Medieval - a retelling of Jan Ziska’s defeat of the Teutonic Order and the Holy Roman Empire in the 14th Century.

B.J. Novak (Smithson "The Little Man" Utivich)

Also known for his work in front of and behind the camera is B.J. Novak, who was best known as a writer, director, and star of The Office cast before playing the unfortunately nicknamed Smithson Utivich in Inglourious Basterds. He would later follow-up his tenure as Ryan Howard by trying his hand at comic book movies (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), biopics directed by John Lee Hancock (Disney’s Saving Mister Banks in 2013 and 2016’s The Founder), and other TV shows like HBO’s The Newsroom or The Mindy Project, which his friend Mindy Kaling created and starred on.

Novak created an anthology series called The Premise (formerly known as Platform) that is premiering to FX in September 2021 and is working on his feature-length debut as a writer and director with the horror film Vengeance, which is currently set for a 2021 release as well.

Mike Myers (Gen. Ed Fenech)

Another Inglourious Basterds star who broke out on a popular comedy series is Saturday Night Live cast veteran Mike Myers, who became one of the most famous comedians in the world thanks to characters like Wayne from Wayne’s World as well as lending his voice to the Shrek movies as the titular Ogre. Thus, it was quite surprising for the almost completely unrecognizable Canadian to make a cameo in a Quentin Tarantino movie until going undercover become more of his thing, such when he hosted the Gong Show reboot as Tommy Maitland or appeared in Bohemian Rhapsody as a fictional record producer. Myers is currently working on Oscar-nominated Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell’s next film and developing a Netflix original comedy series reportedly called The Pentaverate, but whether or not we should expect Austin Powers 4 remains to be determined.

Few filmmakers know how to put a movie cast together as well as Quentin Tarantino. In terms of using each actor appropriately and to the best of their talents, and propelling a few members into extremely successful careers, the Inglourious Basterds cast just may be his masterpiece.

General spoilers below for the first four episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, so be warned!

As a TV show so expensive that even Marvel capped its run at only six episodes, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was expected to bring all of that moolah to the screen through big stunts, big effects and big MCU star power. And the Disney+ series absolutely delivers for the most part, though some viewers' mileage may vary for how well the show balances its eye-candy sequences with everything else. Still, the high-flying action and crunchy brawls aren't even where the MCU drama shines the most in my eyes.

For my money, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's most perfect aspect is the idea that was already built into the concept from the start: the standalone series is a showcase for intriguing and under-utilized MCU characters to further develop their personalities and quirks in ways that theatrical runtimes can't allow for. That goes just as much for Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson and Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes as all of the non-titular characters so let's start off with those gents.

Sam And Bucky Get To Work Out Real Feelings

I'm not going to sit here and argue that Sam's Falcon and Bucky's Winter Soldier haven't been major characters in the MCU thus far, especially considering Sebastian Stan's war veteran was previously name-checked in Captain America's first sequel title. But I'll definitely argue that both Sam and Bucky have more than enough comic history to serve as basis for several seasons of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier outside of Cap's looming shadow (on top of any original stories yet to be crafted). Not to mention both Stan and Anthony Mackie have absolutely earned the chance to bring more Falcon and Winter Soldier tales to audiences, both respectively and as a duo.

It's probably safe to say that both characters already deserved more of the spotlight prior to the events of Avengers: Endgame, but Phase 4 is the ideal time for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to exist so that it can pack the biggest emotional and psychological punch for both Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. Both heroes are finding ways to live in and cope with a world without Steve Rogers and constant Avengers-level missions, much like the show's creative team had to find ways to make those very things happen while writing. And all while dealing with new and unfamiliar threats. Fortunately, 270+ minutes of TV airtime allows for more nuance, depth and levity than even a trio of Marvel movies can usually deliver for supporting characters.

Rather than falling into one extreme (keeping Sam and Bucky apart for most of the season) or the other (inexplicably making them BFFs immediately), The Falcon and the Winter Soldier took a necessary two steps back to address both characters' personal issues without just sweeping them away to embrace the camaraderie. Not only the two men's machismo-infused personal issues with each other, which admittedly make for some of the show's more humorous moments, but also their shared dislike for John Walker's now-spoiled Captain America as the status quo, as well as mutually exclusive problems. From Sam's bank problems regarding his sister to Bucky traversing PTSD amidst a somewhat calmer life, both characters' lives are ripe for exploring in areas that have nothing to do with super-heroics.

Daniel Brühl's Zemo And Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter Have Invested Arcs

My only real complaint about previous appearances from Daniel Brühl's Zemo and Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter is that they were too fleeting, challenging the actors to bring memorable performances to such heavily plot-centric roles. Both actors succeeded, obviously, but The Falcon and the Winter Soldier feels like more of a true payoff for their work in the Captain America sequels, even as Sharon's presence is still being cloaked in mystery. Still, that mystery is an integral part of the development process.

Not that watching Sharon's scenes through the first four episodes haven't already been worthy. By the end of her first minute back in front of audiences, Emily VanCamp's former government agent proved she was not the same person (metaphorically speaking) that we saw in Captain America: Civil War. As an enemy of the state, Sharon has clearly done well for herself in the underbelly of Madripoor's crime scene, and theories abound concerning her connection to Power Broker and other antagonistic characters. So even though the character's arc is still embedded in mystery, she has already proven to be a more established character now, and I for one enjoy Sharon's morally dubious and completely understandable turn away from the Steve Rogers road to patriotism.

Which brings us to Daniel Brühl, who may have already stolen this entire show for me, based almost entirely on his work during the episode "Power Broker," though the fun definitely didn't die down in "The Whole World Is Watching." Brühl had already turned Zemo into a top-tier MCU villain during Captain America: Civil War, but I think few would argue that he had enough time in the spotlight. That was thankfully remedied in full during The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where Zemo has already gifted the world with a variety of GIF-worthy moments, while also reaffirming himself as a charming, hilarious and brilliant villain, even when he's working with (or for) the good guys. Zemo dance party time!

Karli's Flag Smasher And John Walker's Captain America Maintain A Heroic And Villainous Balance

Considering The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's two main characters are a well-respected Avenger and a hero-turned-villain-turned-hero, it makes a measurable amount of sense that the two characters' biggest obstacles are a sympathetic anarchist in Erin Kellyman's Karli Morgenthau and a loathsome "hero" in Wyatt Russell's John Walker. Those dichotomous ideas sound well enough on paper, but I'm consistently impressed by how well showrunner Malcolm Spellman & Co. embraced the duality imbued in both of those characters.

As the namesake leader of the Flag Smashers, Karli knows suffering like the back of her mask, and she has presented a variety of arguably justifiable reasons for not being the most patriotic American these days. Granted, her actions themselves, especially the more destructive and deadly ones, are definitely not as easy to side with. But it's also made obvious that Karli feels some regrets and remorse for her actions, even though she wouldn't reverse them, such is her dedication to the anti-Global Repatriation Council cause. The point is, the Flag Smasher is every bit as much as a human being as she is a villain, which is certainly not always the case with MCU big bads.

Then there's John Walker, a military hero whose ascent to the Captain America mantle is rather hard to grasp in full, considering he is the polar opposite of Chris Evans' Steve Rogers in almost every way. (Which is possibly the point, from the perspective of those who sponsored said ascent.) Therein lies the character's narrative strength, with Walker's Cap standing far apart from the MCU's marquee heroes, and the presence of super-soldier serum in his system has already brought the government-backed hero to a bloody point of no return. Regardless of how much one may not enjoy watching John Walker's narcissism in action, it shouldn't dull any appreciation for Kevin Feige actually allowing Captain America to go down such dark paths in live-action. And on Disney+, no less!

Beyond all the enjoyable and celebratory elements that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has given TV viewers to this point in its first (and possibly only) season, I hope everyone reading this can agree that its deep exploration of the Captain America film franchise's supporting characters is where the show shines the brightest. And those moments, more than the stunts and the fight scenes, are why I continue tuning in early AF every Friday morning on Disney+ when new episodes debut.

Marvel villain Helmut Zemo is back after appearing on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier recently. I don’t know about you, but upon his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I want to revisit (and also discover for the first time) some of the best Daniel Bruhl movies available to stream right now. I actually managed to find quite a plentiful assortment of films (and one TV show) starring the 43-year-old German actor, starting with what must have been how many younger comic fans became acquainted with him.

Captain America: Civil War (Disney+)

An accident during a routine mission puts the Avengers under heavy scrutiny and at odds with one another, which only worsens after Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) goes rogue to prove Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is wrongfully accused of murder.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Daniel Bruhl: Orchestrating (some of) the events leading to the titular conflict in Captain America: Civil War is Daniel Bruhl's vengeful Sokovian, Helmut Zemo - one of Marvel's best villains and a key reason why this movie is a must to revisit before watching The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, if you have not already.

The Cloverfield Paradox (Netflix)

While testing a device intended to solve a global energy crisis, a space station crew of international scientists accidentally create a rift in the space time continuum, which splices their reality and another with grave circumstances.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Daniel Bruhl: In one of their weirder original movies on Netflix that also attempts explain the events of the found footage classic Cloverfield, Daniel Bruhl does not really play a villain, but his trustworthiness is put into questions in The Cloverfield Paradox, the third in producer J.J. Abrams' Cloverfield franchise, which attempts explain the secrets behind the original found footage classic.

7 Days In Entebbe (Tubi)

In July 1976, Wilfried Böse (Daniel Bruhl) and Brigitte Kuhlmann (Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike) hijack a French plane and force it to land in Uganda, where they hold the Jewish passengers with demands to release terrorists being held in Israeli prisons.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Daniel Bruhl: You will have no trouble deciphering whether or not Daniel Bruhl's character from 2018's 7 Days in Entebbe is worth trusting in RoboCop remake director José Padilha's gripping retelling of the historical hostage situation.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Daniel Bruhl: In a more lighthearted travel movie by comparison, Daniel Bruhl plays a stranger who helps Adam Goldberg's Jack understand his overreaction to discovering the romantic history of Marion (Julie Delpy) in 2 Days in Paris, a clever romantic comedy which Delpy also wrote and directed in 2007.

2 Days In New York (Hoopla)

The Alienist (HBO Max)

In the late 1800s, a German psychologist (Daniel Bruhl), his American newspaper illustrator friend (Luke Evans), and the first woman employed by the New York City police department (Dakota Fanning) attempt to use new, experimental tactics that begin to spark controversy among their peers and from the public as they attempt to catch a killer with some shocking methods of his own.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Daniel Bruhl: From playing a man of faith to a man of science, but forced to be very protective of his methods either way, Daniel Bruhl earned a Golden Globe nomination in 2019 for his strong lead performance in the title role of The Alienist - an engrossing period drama which later inspired an 8-episode follow-up on TNT in 2020.

Hoping to clean-up his act after succumbing to his selfish behavior and destructive addictions, American celebrity chef Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper) becomes the head of a low-rated London restaurant and tries to help boost its public appeal.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Daniel Bruhl: As the manager of Adam Jones' London restaurant in Burnt - a 2015 drama that makes the art of preparing high class food look like trench warfare - this marks one of the earlier times Daniel Bruhl shared the screen with a fellow actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before he joined the franchise himself.

Woman In Gold (Tubi, Pluto TV, IMDb TV)

A Jewish woman (Oscar winner Helen Mirren) who successfully escaped persecution during World War II enlists the help of a young American attorney (Ryan Reynolds) to help reclaim a stolen family heirloom from the Nazis: a priceless portrait of her aunt painted in gold.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Daniel Bruhl: In another early instance of him sharing the screen with a fellow Marvel movie actor (before Ryan Reynolds portrayal of Deadpool would become part of the MCU, of course), in the 2015 biopic Woman in Gold, Daniel Bruhl plays an ally against the Nazis, unlike the role which brought him closer than ever before to mainstream movie star status in the United States.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Daniel Bruhl: You know, I guess if we really want to get technical here, the first movie in which Daniel Bruhl co-starred with an MCU actor, and a Thor movie actor more specifically, is The Bourne Ultimatum - the third, and arguably best, installment of Matt Damon's Jason Bourne movie franchise from 2007.

Daniel Bruhl is steadily approaching the role of the ultimate wild card in any game of Six Degrees of Separation with the entire MCU cast at this point. I mean, he already starred alongside most of them in Captain America: Civil War anyway. Now, with his return in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, who knows where he will take Zemo to next?

Spoilers below for the latest episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, so be warned!

With its third episode, fittingly titled "Power Broker," The Falcon and the Winter Soldier brought back not only the already anticipated Emily Vancamp as Sharon Carter and Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo, but the MCU drama also dropped a doozy of a surprise by bringing Florence Kasumba back as Wakandan guard Ayo. However, the coolest reference had little to do with Marvel itself, and everything to do with the Prince of Motown himself, Marvin Gaye, and that callback namedrop was all the more special in that it occurred on the soul icon's birthday.

Marvin Gaye fans everywhere are celebrating his April 2 birthday by posting many of his classic tracks on social media, and many are still unable to fully come to grips with the senselessly violent circumstances surrounding his murder. But it was only good vibes on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier – well, mostly good vibes, anyway. Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson was indeed downright disturbed by the lack of adoration wafting off of Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes whenever he referenced the Captain America: The Winter Soldier moment when he first recommended Marvin Gaye's 1972 album Trouble Man.

In the first half of the episode, a reluctant Sam and Bucky are traveling with Daniel Brühl's dead villain Zemo on the latter's private plane. And while Zemo is mostly fitting into a protagonist mold, he falls back on devious patterns by swiping Bucky's little notebook with his list of names. And while the latter nearly went into Winter Soldier mode all over Zemo's face, Sam brought levity back into the plane by pointing out the notebook used to belong to Chris Evans' Steve Rogers – who may or may not be on the moon – and recalled when Steve jotted down the note to listen to Marvin Gaye's largely instrumental Trouble Man soundtrack.

Sam then made the mistake of asking Bucky what he thought about Trouble Man, and the latter hilariously responded by reminding everyone his fandom lies with music from the 1940s. To be fair, Bucky tried to say that he did like Marvin Gaye's Trouble Man, but he was about as convincing as a window saying it can block the sun. At which point even Zemo spoke up and called the album a complete and comprehensive masterpiece. Much as Sam wanted to tell Zemo to stay out of it, he acknowledged the villain's praise as legit.

After Bucky failed once more to convince anyone that he is a Marvin Gaye fan, Sam brought it back to the O.G. Captain America clearly having better musical taste.

Even though Marvin Gaye isn't around to appreciate it (assuming he would in the first place), I imagine it's a pretty sweet birthday gift to have one of the biggest TV shows on streaming to formally declare Captain America being a huge fan. Even if Bucky is more on the meh side of things, as Bucky tends to be.

All things told, it was kind of an awkward moment for that topic to come up, seeing as how Sebastian Stan's character was already stressed out and just had his notebook stolen, so he probably wasn't in the precise mood to talk about his fandoms. (I mean, unless someone wanted to talk big band era tunes.) But I bet if Sam mentioned that the new Captain America John Walker was a Marvin Gaye fan, Bucky would have punched a hole through the plane wall. Everybody just loves that John Walker, amirite?

We'll continue to take all our MCU music advice from Sam Wilson, and ma-a-aybe Zemo. Oh, and James Gunn. But that's it! Now let's all take a minute to reflect on the excellence of Marvin Gaye and send the late legend some good thoughts.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier airs Fridays on Disney+, but there are only three episodes left to go, so here's hoping Anthony Mackie's Falcon will be "Flyin' High (In the Friendly Sky)" by the time all is said and done.

Marvel has been upping their game lately with some of these shows that have been coming out on Disney+. They started out 2021 freaking strong with WandaVision, becoming one of, if not the most popular show on the platform at the time. Now, however, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has smashed the records on Disney+, becoming one of the most viewed premiers so far.

It’s clear that the fans are here for this awesome continuation of these great characters, but because of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, there are several other characters to explore – which means there are plenty of other actors that have been around in Hollywood for some time now. While Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie have made appearances in some of our favorites movies and TV shows, other costars like Emily VanCamp, Don Cheadle, and many others have popped up here and there just as much. This is where you’ve most likely seen The Falcon and the Winter Soldier actors.

Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson)

Anthony Mackie has been around in the business for a while. Fun fact: he even attended the legendary art school, Juilliard, in New York City prior to becoming a famous actor, so he’s not short of awesome talent. His first ever film that he appeared in was the Eminem classic, 8 Mile, playing Papa Doc, followed by some other big hits.

Mackie also had a supporting role in the Oscar-winning film The Hurt Locker, and starred opposite fellow Marvel actor Frank Grillo in the 2019 Netflix thriller Point Blank. Anthony Mackie has always stepped into television a bit recently. He had a starring role in the HBO film, All the Way, talking about the years of Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency. Mackie has also had guest roles on a Black Mirror episode, “Striking Vipers” (yes, that episode), and a starring role in the second season of Altered Carbon on Netflix. It’s refreshing to see him get another lead role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and I can’t wait to see how much more we learn about Sam Wilson.

Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes)

Bucky Barnes has been around since the first Captain America movie, so it was about time he was actually given some real lines and a nice storyline to go along with it in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Sebastian Stan, who has portrayed Bucky since the beginning, has been in plenty of other films and TV that you most likely saw. For example, he portrayed the Mad Hatter for some time on the hit TV show, Once Upon a Time, and had a supporting role in Gossip Girl.

In terms of film, Stan has had several appearances. He’s played main roles in plenty of movies as of recently, such as the Oscar-nominated film, I, Tonya, where he starred alongside Margot Robbie, The Martian – another Oscar-nominated movie – and Black Swan, yet another Oscar-nominated movie. Seems like Sebastian Stan really knows how to pick ‘em.

Other than that, he’s appeared in other films like the supernatural thriller The Covenant, the comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, and several others. It seems like no matter what, you’ll be seeing Stan showing off his acting chops in all kinds of genres.

Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter)

Okay, let’s not talk about the strange romance that she had with Captain America in Captain America: Civil War. Other than that, Sharon Carter is a badass agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and deserves all the praise in the world. Emily VanCamp, the actress behind Sharon Carter, is considered a queen of TV to me.

Why do I say that? Because she has been in so many television shows that are absolute hits. Currently, Emily VanCamp has the main role in the thriller, The Resident, a medical drama that follows the story of a doctor that is secretly a psychopath. Emily VanCamp has also had main roles in Everwood, another medical drama, Revenge, a classic and pure vengeance tale, and Brothers & Sisters, a drama that focuses on the problems a family faces when their patriarch passes away. Truly, she has been around for some time and deserves so much more praise. Hopefully, with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, she can bring a little bit more personality to the otherwise unexplored Sharon Carter.

Don Cheadle (James "Rhodey" Rhodes)

While his role is smaller in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Don Cheadle still shines as James "Rhodey" Rhodes, the former best friend of Iron Man himself, Tony Stark. Don Cheadle, like Anthony Mackie, has been in the business for some time, with one of his first famous films being the hit heist movie, Ocean’s Eleven.

This would be a role he would go on to reprise in both sequels, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen. Cheadle also had a main role in the Oscar-winning movie, Crash, where he played a detective who was investigating recent murders that were based on racial tensions. In terms of TV, Don Cheadle also had a main role in House of Lies, a comedy series that follows the story of management consultants who will stop at nothing to somehow get business deals done.

Wyatt Russell (John Walker)

Yeah, I don’t want to talk about that new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier either, but we gotta because Wyatt Russell is the man behind that reveal. His character, John Walker, is a high-ranking member of the military and has been chosen to become the new Captain America – but Steve in my heart will always hold that place, sorry not sorry.

Besides that, the actor behind him, Wyatt Russell, has appeared in a couple of projects you might recognize. One main hit was the sci-fi action movie, Cowboys & Aliens, about what you would probably expect it to be – cowboys vs a group of aliens. Russell also had a role in 22 Jump Street, the sequel to 21 Jump Street. He played Zook, the friend and later roommate of Channing Tatum’s character, Jenko. And you may also know him from 2018's Overlord.

On the small screen, you may have seen Wyatt Russell before is in the Black Mirror episode, “Playtest,” where his character experiences the advancements (and dangers) of reality technology. Don’t know how well he’ll be as the New Captain America but we can only wait and see.

Erin Kellyman (Karli Morgenthau)

While her character has been flying a little bit under the radar, Erin Kellyman’s version of Karli Morgenthau, the leader of the anti-patriotism group the “Flag-Smashers” is already proving to be a big threat, considering the group, in Episode 1, is causing some hysteria nice and quickly.

The actress herself hasn’t been in many things that have gone mainstream, but among her growing list of credits, there have been some great roles. She recently played Eponine on a British TV miniseries version of the classic story, Les Miserables. Erin Kellyman also had a part in the British drama, Raised by Wolves, and had a minor role in one of the more recent Star Wars spinoffs, Solo: A Star Wars Story as Enfys Nest, the leader of the group of pirates called the “Cloud Riders.” Hopefully stepping into The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will get this young actress some better footing in mainstream TV and movies.

Danny Ramirez (Joaquin Torres)

I know it’s only been a couple of episodes, but I love Joaquin Torres so much. He seems like he’s the type of guy who has that golden-retriever energy and just wants to help out as much as he can despite not technically being a superhero. I can’t wait to see where his character goes as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier progresses.

However, the actor behind this new character is none other than Danny Ramirez, a relative newcomer to Hollywood. While he hasn’t had any super big roles, Ramirez has appeared in multiple shows as guest spots and supporting characters. He’s been on the Netflix dramedy, Orange is the New Black, as well as had a recurring role on The Gifted, which is actually a superhero show. Danny Ramirez also had a small part in another Netflix show, On My Block, a coming-of-age story about four friends navigating the gritty streets of the inner city of South Central Los Angeles. However this is his first main role, so I’m excited to see where he goes.

Georges St-Pierre (Georges Batroc)

Georges St-Pierre is likely better known for his work as a mixed martial artist than for his acting to date – though he does have some credits to his name, including his portrayal of George Batroc, a mercenary and leader of a criminal group under the name of LAF. While Georges St-Pierre may not have much on the acting side just yet, you may have seen him fight once or twice – maybe several in the UFC.

St-Pierre was a two-division champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and has won titles in both the welterweight and the middleweight divisions, so there’s no holding back this awesome mixed martial artist. It was only a matter of time before he had decided to come over to Marvel to show off his amazing talent. However, you might have seen this character, Georges Batroc, before in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as he is reprising the role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. You’ll most certainly see this man kicking butt.

Adepero Oduye (Sarah Wilson)

One of the things I’m really enjoying about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the inclusion of Sam’s family, and that includes Sarah Wilson, Sam’s sister. I always wondered what it was like to have a superhero as a sibling and if it really affected people’s lives. It’s refreshing to see a different take in a series that’s otherwise going to be about two superheroes, you know?

Adepero Oduye is portraying Sarah Wilson, and so far, she’s done a great job of showing just how much stress has been put onto her family since the blip and everything else. Oduye has made plenty of appearances in movies that you most likely have seen before, but here are just a few for example – she portrayed Eliza in the Best Picture-winning 12 Years A Slave back in 2013, had a role in the Oscar-nominated The Big Short, played a part in the action film Geostorm, and even stepped into the world of heist films by portraying Breechelle in Widows.

She’s surely going to rock it as a Wilson with that list of different genres. I’m super pumped.

Daniel Bruhl (Helmut Zemo)

You might recognize this name from Captain America: Civil War, and that’s because you are right – that is the same Zemo from the third Captain America movie that is making a return in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Not much is known about his role in the upcoming episodes, but if it’s as dangerous as his role in Captain America: Civil War, you’ll find yourself worried about the friendships between supers. This man is an expert at tearing the Avengers apart.

Daniel Bruhl, the actor behind Helmut Zemo, has had a couple of memorable roles that you might have seen him in. He portrayed Fredrick Zoller in the Quentin Tarantino film, Inglourious Basterds, and Niki Lauda in the film, Rush. Some of his more recent roles have been playing Lutz Heck in The Zookeepers Wife and Ernst Schmidt in The Cloverfield Paradox, the third film in the Cloverfield franchise.

I’m sort of lowkey terrified that Zemo will find a way to somehow split up Bucky and Sam after Captain America: Civil War, so I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for him to show up.

With all these actors, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is looking to be an utter showcase of some of the best in Hollywood. I can’t wait to see what their characters do – and the brilliance behind each actor who plays them. It gets me even more excited for the upcoming Marvel movies and upcoming Marvel TV shows. I can feel the nerd-ness overtaking me.

Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is set to bring a number of fresh elements to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it continues the journeys of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. The Disney+ series will see the two embark on a global adventure and face dangers that will test their skills (and patience with one another). We don’t know too many specific plot details, but a recent set photo may hint at a major twist that involves an established MCU character.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is currently shooting in Prague, which is where the show was in production when things were shut down earlier this year. Someone just happened to snap a picture (via Twitter) from the set and, interestingly, it shows Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes and Daniel Brühl’s Helmut Zemo together. With Zemo hanging around the two heroes, it’s leading people to assume that Sam and Bucky are going to team up with Zemo at some point.

This may sound like a wild theory to some, but it could make sense – and hint to major ramifications for the MCU. Set photos have already revealed the presence of another villain in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Georges Batroc, who first appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. So there’s always the possibility that Zemo is helping them to take down the mercenary.

When we last saw Zemo in Captain America: Civil War, he was in federal custody, with his incarceration being overseen by Everett Ross. Fans have long speculated that Marvel Studios has plans for the Thunderbolts, a superhero team that was founded by Zemo in the comics. If Zemo is teaming up with Wilson and Barnes, this could be a way of planting seeds for a more “heroic” Zemo.

It was surprising to hear that Daniel Brühl would be reprising his villainous role for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Though fans more than welcomed it, especially when it was revealed that he would don his famous purple mask. Brühl himself previously spoke about how exciting it was to be able to return to a role and mentioned that he was very happy to find out he’d be wearing the mask.

Zemo didn’t play the typical mustache-twirling villain in Civil War but, in actuality, he ended up being a more sympathetic figure. Given his development so far, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if Zemo doesn’t turn out to be the true antagonist of this series. I mean there is that faux Captain America, John Walker/U.S. Agent, after all.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier should be a nice adventure that allows fans to revisit with these characters, and it’s sure to have plenty of twists and turns. This new photo stirs up a number of questions, though, and it’s only going to make the wait that much harder.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will arrive on Disney+ sometime in 2021.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be the first Marvel series to debut on Disney+, and it’s bringing back Daniel Brühl’s Baron Zemo, the villain who was first introduced in Captain America: Civil War. Details about the six-episode series are still scarce, but Brühl recently revealed how he found out he’d be returning to the MCU as Zemo in the upcoming Disney+ show.

Baron Zemo was a villain who wanted nothing more than revenge against the Avengers for inadvertently killing his family during the Battle of Sokovia in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Zemo then orchestrated an entire plan that included framing the Winter Soldier, a.k.a. Bucky Barnes, for the murder of King T’Chaka, Black Panther’s father, in an attack during Captain America: Civil War.

Zemo was eventually captured, but the damage was done. Now, the antagonist will be back, presumably to wreak even more havoc in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Speaking with Collider, Daniel Brühl, who will next be seen in Season 2 of TNT’s The Alienist: Angel of Darkness, recalled the moment he got word that he’d be back to play Baron Zemo. Here’s what he said:

It’s rather exciting to have the actor back as Baron Zemo. I don’t think he got enough screen time in Captain America: Civil War. That’s understandable though, considering how much the film had going on already, but The Falcon and the Winter Soldier can hopefully expand on his backstory and relationships with both Sebastian Stan’s Bucky and Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

As it turns out, what Daniel Brühl wound up “recording” was the first look teaser announcement for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that debuted at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Seeing Zemo’s iconic purple mask was one of the best parts, and I’m glad the actor was “enthusiastic” about seeing the mask as well.

Finding out what Baron Zemo has been up to in the years since Captain America: Civil War will be interesting, and I’m mostly looking forward to how his interactions with Sam and Bucky play out. Unfortunately, the Disney+ series had to shut down its production in March before it was able to wrap filming. The good news is that the cast and crew are getting ready to resume production in Czech Republic. That likely means the show will get back to filming sooner rather than later.

Just because Avengers: Endgame isn't done raking money in at the box office doesn't mean we can't start obsessing heavily over the MCU's future on the small screen, particularly where news about Disney+'s upcoming Falcon & Winter Soldier miniseries is concerned. Fans will be interested to hear that the action-tinged drama will likely welcome back two characters that haven't been seen since Captain America: Civil War: Daniel Brühl's Zemo and Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter. Let's discuss.

At this point, nothing appears to be locked down just yet, with Daniel Brühl and Emily VanCamp currently in talks to sign on for Disney+'s new project that'll focus on Anthony Mackie's Sam "Falcon" Wilson and Sebastian Stan's Bucky "Winter Soldier" Barnes. It's confirmed that the in-negotiations actors would be reprising their former roles, though, and considering things got this far in the process already, it's likely they'll be involved with the final Falcon & Winter Soldier project.

Daniel Brühl's Zemo

As fans will remember, Daniel Brühl took on the role of the comic book villain Helmut Zemo for Captain America: Civil War, though the familiar moniker was toyed with throughout the film. Wisely, the Marvel sequel chose not to kill Zemo off after his malicious machinations set up Civil War's superhero showdown, and it was stated around that time that the villain was possibly being set up for larger stories down the road.

With Avengers: Endgame putting a pin in certain sectors of the MCU's first three phases, it's obviously a good time to bring fan-favorite characters back from previous projects. Daniel Brühl's Zemo could be just the villain that Falcon & Winter Soldier needs to kick things off on the right foot, depending on where this storyline is heading.

Because – surprise, surprise! – knowing that Zemo and Sharon Carter are probably going to return for Falcon & Winter Soldier does not offer fans any notions about how they would be used in the show. The plot, and anything more than the most basic logline, is being held back from the public until closer to release. That made some sense with Avengers: Endgame just hit theaters last month, limiting what could be revealed before that. But now that just about everyone and their grandmother's neighbor has already watched the movie, can we get some more details?

It's known that there were some original plans to have Zemo and Bucky's connection be a major thread for Captain America: Civil War, rather than just serve as the B story. Perhaps there are some elements from that version of the outline that will survive on in Falcon & Winter Soldier, or perhaps learning about Sam Wilson's Endgame promotion will be enough to inspire a second villainous run for TV. (Not that anything has been confirmed about how that gamechanging twist will be handled for the Disney+ series.)

Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter

Emily VanCamp's potential return for Falcon & Winter Soldier is the far more curious news here, all things considered. While Daniel Brühl was lauded for his work as Zemo, Marvel fans were less kind about Sharon Carter's time within the MCU, though it's never necessarily been a knock on VanCamp herself.

Not only is/was Sharon Carter an information-tracking member of the CIA, but she's also a great-niece of Peggy Carter, which is a connection that will no doubt get explored more in Falcon & Winter Soldier if her character gets used. The reason why audiences were largely dismissive of Sharon is because the film seemingly set her up as a love interest for Steve Rogers, viewed as a bad call, and then took her out of the story altogether. She was reportedly meant to return in Avengers: Infinity War, but that didn't happen.

Disney+: Everything We Know About The New Streaming Service

No danger of seeing Sharon and Steve getting hot and heavy in Falcon & Winter Soldier, but the events of Avengers: Endgame do invite some unique questions about how Emily VanCamp's character will get developed. SPOILER WARNING for anyone who hasn't yet watched Avengers: Endgame**.**

Through the time-travel shenanigans that Steve Rogers goes through in order to fix all the Stone-related issues, it became more apparent that Captain America is actually the father of Peggy Carter's children, whose existences was introduced in Captain America: Winter Soldier. That parenthood notion was more or less confirmed by the Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, so how will that familial connection get used in Falcon & Winter Soldier?

That's assuming it will get brought up again, of course. It's entirely possible that it could all get waved away with a hand, with Sharon Carter entering the story solely for governmental agency purposes. But it's not the likeliest technique to go with.

Just to put it out there, Sebastian Stan recently brought up the idea that Bucky Barnes could go on a date during the course of Falcon & Winter Soldier. He was seemingly speaking in general terms about how the TV show could let Bucky enjoy more traditional elements of everyday life. However, is it possible that Sharon will come back as Bucky's love interest? That certainly wouldn't rile up anyone in the fanbase.

Currently in the midst of filming Kingsman: The Great Game, Daniel Brühl hasn't taken on any other comic book roles since Captain America: Civil War, though he's been in flicks suck as The Cloverfield Paradox and 7 Days in Entebbe. On the TV side of things, he'd recently starred in TNT's crime mystery The Alienist.

With 2016's Boundaries as the only post-Civil War film for Emily VanCamp, the actress has kept busy on the small screen, where she first made a name for herself on the dramas Brothers & Sisters and Revenge. Most recently, of course, she's been starred in Fox's medical drama The Resident.

Will there be strife between Steve Rogers' best friends whenever Falcon & Winter Soldier starts up on Disney+? We currently have only the slightest inkling of what'll happen, but rest assured that we'll be digging hard into trailers and images for the new show when they become available.

Disney+ is set to go live for streaming customers on Tuesday, November 12, though the company hasn't yet confirmed the entirety of movies and TV shows that will be available at launch. As well, Falcon & Winter Soldier and the other upcoming live-action Marvel shows – such as WandaVision and Tom Hiddleston's standalone Loki series – have yet to get any locked-down release dates. So stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more news as it becomes available to us.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe frequently kills off its villains once they've served their purpose a movie, but every so often one makes it out alive to either fight or another day or be imprisoned for their crimes. Daniel Brühl's Helmut Zemo falls into the latter category, as he was captured by Black Panther and subsequently imprisoned by Everett Ross. Zero is now locked in a containment cell and presumably serving a life sentence or two for his actions during Captain America: Civil War, but Brühl is hopeful that one day, Zemo will escape custody and return to antagonize the MCU again. When asked if he might return for a future Marvel movie, Brühl responded:

Helmut Zemo may not have special powers, use advanced technology or command an army, but he did accomplish what no other villain in the MCU has: fracturing the Avengers. Seeking revenge against the Avengers for the death of his family, who died when Earth's Mightiest Heroes were battling Ultron and his drones in Sokovia during Avengers: Age of Ultron, Zemo bombed the signing of the Sokovia Accords in Vienna and framed Bucky Barnes for the attack, which led to an already-bigger wedge being driven between Captain America: Civil War's main protagonists when Steve Rogers tried to protect Bucky. But that was just one step of Zemo's plan, and in the end, he was successful in seeing the Avengers team collapse, though Black Panther prevented him from committing suicide afterwards. Now Zemo is languishing in prison, but like Daniel Brühl noted, the man is smart enough that one of these days, he might just escape.

Of course, just because Daniel Brühl expressed interest to Screen Rant in reprising Helmut Zemo doesn't guarantee that will happen. There are other MCU baddies still breathing who haven't made a grand return yet. For example, Emil Blonsky, a.k.a. Abomination, was taken into custody by the U.S. military at the end of The Incredible Hulk, and we haven't heard a peep from him since then. With the Captain America film series seemingly over and Phase 4 marking a new beginning for this franchise, there's a distinct chance that Zemo actually will remain incarcerated for the rest of his life. But if the MCU ever needs an everyman, diabolical genius to cause trouble for one or more of its heroes, just remember that there's one ready to be broken out of prison whenever is convenient.

We're coming up on an interesting time at the box office. While Black Panther has dominated for close to a month, there is a slew of interesting new projects coming out in theaters. While Tomb Raider will no doubt provide some fun action to moviegoers, 7 Days in Entebbe is a decidedly more serious drama. The new film, directed by José Padilha, tells the story of infamous 1976 hijacking of Air France Flight 139, and the week long standoff that followed. The film also makes a bold choice by having a choreographed dance sequence framing the narrative. I recently spoke with actor Daniel Bruhl (Captain America: Civil War, Inglorious Basterds) who stars as terrorist Wilfried Böse. When asked about the dance, Bruhl spoke to what it represented in the film.

It looks like Daniel Bruhl is particularly fond of the dance sequence in 7 Days in Entebbe, as it allows the film to bring something new to the tale of the infamous real-life hijacking.

Indeed, there have already been three film adaptations about the event, and the week hostages spent in Entebbe, Uganda. The first two were American TV movies, titled Victory in Entebbe and Raid on Entebbe respectively. Additionally, an Israeli film titled Operation Thunderbolt also told the story, although it has since faded from the pop culture lexicon. The use of a dance piece is just one way that 7 Days in Entebbe attempt to set itself apart from the past adaptations, in addition to the way it focused on the large cast of characters.

7 Days In Entebbe doesn't simply follow the events around the hijacking and taking of hostages back in 1976. Rather than only focusing on the likes of Daniel Bruhl's Wilfred Bose and Rosamund Pike's Brigitte Kuhlmann, the new movie includes a wide variety of real life figures who factors into the events. This includes Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and his cabinet, soldiers involved in the raid, the passengers, and those simply watching the events on the news.

Through the entirety of 7 Days in Entebbe, there is a dance piece being shown to the audience. The wild dancing helps to highlight the terrifying nature of the situation, as well as the overall political ramifications of the hijacking. It bookends the piece, and allows for some of the more alarmingly powerful moments of the film.

When Daniel Bruhl's Helmut Zemo is introduced in Captain America: Civil War, he doesn't exactly come across as a nice guy. After all, he breaks into an old man's house and then tortures him while trying to extract information. As dark as this is, however, the movie nearly had a much deadlier first scene for the character, involving him killing a whole room full of people.

This interesting bit of "What Could Have Been" is revealed on the new audio commentary attached to the digital release of Captain America: Civil War, featuring directors Joe and Anthony Russo and writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus. When Zemo arrives on screen in the movie, Joe Russo discusses that they initially filmed a completely different introduction, but that it was ultimately replaced because it didn't move the story forward as well as it should. Said the co-director:

Anthony Russo followed up by pointing out that it didn't provide enough specificity in regards to who Zemo is as a villain in Captain America: Civil War, and then Stephen McFeely explained why the scene that is featured in the movie is so much better than what they originally planned. A big part of this is the fact that the sequence directly ties directly back to the film's opening with the inclusion of a specific character. Said McFeely,

In addition to the arguments made by the Captain America: Civil War directors and writers, it's also worth noting that gassing an entire room of people would have seriously changed the way the audience looked at Helmut Zemo as well. By the end of the movie you are actually supposed to somewhat sympathize with the antagonist -- being a very real victim of the Avengers' collateral damage -- but that's a pretty hard thing to do if the character's first scene has him indiscriminately killing a room full of people. That's a pretty big step up from killing the Marvel Cinematic Universe equivalent of a Nazi.

Thanks to her time in the Harry Potter franchise, Emma Watson is a bona fide movie star. However, that apparently doesn't mean that people will go rushing off to the theater to see just any movie that she's in, even in her home country. The actress's newest film, Colonia, recently opened in the UK, and it only took in the equivalent of about $60 at the box office.

Colonia, called The Colony overseas, is a story about a woman, Emma Watson's character, who infiltrates a cult in Chile during the regime of Augusto Pinochet, in an attempt to get her husband out. There are a couple of reasons for the film's lackluster success at the box office. The first is very simple, it was never really meant to be successful at the box office. Colonia received a day-and-date theater release on the same day it went to video-on-demand. The VOD release was really what the film was designed for, and as such, it was only released in a few theaters. The Guardian says the movie got a "token" release in three theaters. That per-screen average is sad.

The other reason that Colonia didn't get people out of their homes is because it apparently isn't very good. It currently sits at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, and we were one of those places that gave it a lackluster review. While Emma Watson and Daniel Bruhl do well with what they're given in the film, they simply aren't given much. It's likely that the filmmakers knew where the movie was going, and that probably had a part in the decision to send it to video-on-demand.

This is the second film in as many months with high profile actors to see an extremely limited theatrical release in the UK. A few weeks back, Misconduct, which starred Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino, also saw a tiny theatrical release, that nobody bothered to attend. Misconduct at least made slightly more money in its opening weekend, a whopping $141. Although, on the negative side, it reviewed even worse than Colonia.

Colonia was released in April here in the U.S., where it only grossed $15,000 in 27 theaters. Hopefully, the video-on-demand numbers have been stronger. Have you seen Colonia? What did you think?

It's hard to make a movie that can examine the great injustices of the world, while remaining entertaining at the same time. Serious matters don't always lend themselves to one particular genre, and it can be difficult to make a fictional narrative that not only makes sense from a story-driven standpoint, but also doesn't mess with the facts too greatly. That being said, it can be done, and we've seen it done numerous times in the past. Unfortunately, after watching Colonia, I can't say that I've seen it happen any time recently.

After her boyfriend, Dan (Daniel Bruhl), is abducted and imprisoned at a Chilean "colony for dignity," Lena (Emma Watson) infiltrates said camp to locate and extract her lover. What she finds within the walls of the "Colonia Dignidad" is a society built on order and fear, lead by a cult leader (Michael Nyqvist) who can be both charismatic and brutal. With time running out, and every move watched oh so carefully, Lena will have to act fast and find a means of escape, despite not knowing who she can trust.

Colonia wants you to be shocked by what it's showing you, and it does so by presenting the heinous actions of leader Paul Schafer and his minions in a clinical fashion. It's this relatively bloodless and toothless nature that causes the film overall to suffer the most, as this brutal regime is presented in such a way that our leads don't have to get too beaten, bloodied, or dirtied. We see whippings, electroshock therapy, and plain old public shame beating, but none of it really connects.

Part of the reason Colonia doesn't connect is the fact that the film presents us Lena and Dan in a threadbare fashion, with the bare minimum of background into their relationship, as well as Dan's fight for a fair Chilean government. In fact, it's only about 15 minutes of quickly paced backstory that propels us into the coup and disorder of Pinochet's Chile, which could work if those 15 minutes had enough material to make us believe in the characters. The film's failure to do so takes away from the greatest asset it can call its own: its stellar cast.

Daniel Bruhl and Emma Watson are fantastic, despite the limited material they're given to work with. Their acting abilities, as well as innate charisma, shine through the moments where Colonia lets them. If there's any justice in Hollywood, these two will be given another, more prestigious film to work with, as they're so great together. But again, with a film that runs just under two hours, we're not given much time to think or worry about them, so their performances end up lost in the shuffle for most of the film's events.

Capping off the comedy of errors that is known as Colonia's story structure, the pre-requisite title cards at the end of the film give us both background information that would have been more useful in the beginning of the film, as well as the "where are they now?" information that we usually require at the end of a film "inspired by true events." For a film that's listed in the genres of "drama, history, and romance" on IMDB, Colonia shows very little of all three fronts. Yes, it's hard to make a historical film that's entertaining without stretching the truth to an uncertain degree.

But that's not what I'm asking Colonia to do. I'm asking it to just give me a little more of its time, so it can slow itself down and tell a story that could have been a pot boiler, but instead turned into a half baked melodrama. With bookends that are more interesting than the meat of the piece, it's recommended that you watch the first and last half hour of Colonia, and then read up about the actual Colonia Dignidad in-between.

The following contains some spoilers for Captain America: Civil War.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe takes many of its cues from the comics on which it is based, it’s also not afraid to change things up when necessary. Such was the case when Zemo, the newest villain in the MCU, appeared during Captain America: Civil War. While he has the name of one of Captain America’s most popular villains, the man that we see in Civil War is very different from his comic book counterpart. According to the writers of the film, it was necessary, as the motivations of the original Baron Zemo simply would not have worked.

One of the key elements of Captain America’s history is that he’s a soldier who ends up frozen during World War II. This has never changed. However, what it does mean to the character is that, the more time that passes since the war, the longer Captain America ends up frozen. This longer separation from World War II means that it’s difficult to justify any villain who would be motivated by it, as Stephen McFeely tells Yahoo.

Rather than have him motivated by something that Captain America did to his family 70 years ago, this Helmut Zemo, played by Daniel Bruhl, is motivated by a much more personal connection to the Avengers. He was a Sokovian soldier who lost his family during the closing events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Apparently the writers did consider giving the character an entirely separate name, since he really wasn’t the traditional Zemo, but ultimately decided the character was better using the name.

In the end, this was almost certainly the right move. While Zemo could have done all the same things because he hated Captain America for what Cap had done to his family decades ago, it would have been much harder to justify that grudge. Even if they’d tried, that would have been additional screen time taken up by Zemo, when the true focus of Captain America: Civil War was designed to be the heroes. While Zemo’s contribution to the plot is important, it’s never the focus of the film.

Understandably, the majority of Captain America: Civil War’s promotion over the last six months or so has been dedicated towards highlighting the actual superhero conflict. However, those who’ve been following news regarding the movie knew that it had a true antagonist: Helmut Zemo, played by Daniel Brühl. Despite his casting being known for over a year, Marvel kept his exact involvement in the movie a secret, and it was only last month that the studio finally released an image of Brühl’s Zemo. Fortunately, this lack of publicity wasn’t indicative of his importance, as he not only proved a worthy behind-the-scenes threat in Captain America: Civil War, but also cemented himself as one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best villains.

One of the primary criticisms of the MCU’s villains is that they aren’t given enough depth, They’re just running through the usual villain cliches, which isn’t always bad, provided that they also don't comes across as one-dimensional. That wasn’t the case with Zemo. After his family died when Ultron attacked Sokovia, Zemo blamed the Avengers for their deaths. Using the skills he learned as a Sokovian intelligence officer, he set out to manipulate the Avengers into fighting one another, since using brute force wasn’t going to get the job done. Fortunately for him, both the Sokovia Accords and Bucky Barnes’ assassin past proved to be just the things his plan needed. Zemo wasn’t portrayed as a dark version of one of these heroes or just wanting to seize power for the hell of it. His motivations came from anger, and while this is a base emotion, it made him feel more relatable, human and best of all, multi-layered. That’s how many of the best villains are represented.

Admittedly, it was hard to figure out at first what Zemo’s plan was in Captain America: Civil War, but once we arrived at the old HYDRA Siberia outpost and that footage of Winter Soldier killing Howard and Maria Stark was shown, it all clicked into place. His endgame wasn’t to kill Captain America, Iron Man and the rest with those enhanced Winter Soldiers, as many of us assumed. He simply played Earth’s Mightiest Heroes like chess pieces, intent on having them destroy each other. In a world filled with aliens, androids, super soldiers and other kinds of enhanced beings, the Avengers were undone by a regular man with one goal: to seek revenge for his family. He didn’t have super powers, wield unusual technology or come from another planet, but he was still able to cause a significant amount of destruction and emotional trauma for just being a normal guy dead set on vengeance. It was simple, yet extremely effective.

Marvel also avoided the same pitfall they’ve fallen into with most of their major villains: killing them off at the end. Rather than let him succeed in shooting himself, Black Panther intercepted the bullet with his vibranium-woven glove so that Zemo could face justice for his crimes. He’s now incarcerated in Berlin, but that doesn’t bother him, as his interaction with Everett Ross made it clear that he believes he succeeded. In a way, he did. Captain America and Iron Man’s relationship has been fractured (though not beyond repair), and now the members of Team Captain America have to operate in secret to keep protecting their world. Phase Three just started, and thanks to Zemo, it’s off to a rough start. Remember how Spider-Man referenced The Empire Strikes Back while taking down Giant-Man? Well, Captain America: Civil War could be considered the Empire Strikes Back of the MCU.

Deep-cut comic book fans know that Captain America: Civil War’s Zemo wasn’t that similar to his comic book counterpart. This wasn’t a secret by any means, as this version had been called a "loose interpretation" several times, and the Russo brother said that they altered him to service the story in a "fresh and exciting" way. While this may not be pleasing to those who want as faithful an adaptation as possible, the fact is that the Zemo we got on the big screen fit the story excellently. This movie had so much conflict and grandiose moments between the heroes that we didn’t need the scheming Zemo from the comics to swoop in and plot the usual kind of sinister schemes. Daniel Brühl’s Zemo benefitted from being a normal human rather than looking weird or having some kind of gimmick, and made his accomplishments even more impressive. All this being said, here’s the other important thing to remember: this may not be the last we’ve see of Zemo in the MCU, which means we could see him evolve into something closer to the source material.

Villains can certainly be made interesting for just one movie, but as we’ve seen with Loki across the Thor movies and The Avengers, if they get the chances to develop over many stories, they become even more compelling. That can happen with Helmut Zemo if Marvel decides to use him again, and they would be wise to. Zemo has already accomplished his main goal, but that doesn’t he can’t continue his life of villainy. If he’s brought back in another movie, whether in Phase Three or Four, then we can see him become into the criminal operative he is in the comics. If they really want to go the distance, give him a version of the purple mask, though we don’t necessarily need the entire purple get-up or Adhesive X to scar his face. One thing: if Zemo does return, don’t kill him off at the beginning of the next movie, like what was done with Crossbones in Captain America: Civil War. Let him get most, if not an entire movie, to grow further.

Emma Watson’s quest to prove to people that she’s more than just Hermione Granger continues with Colonia, which premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival. Based on real, and rather horrific events, Watson has teamed up with some almighty cinematic talent for Colonia, and the first trailer suggests that it will go a long way to putting the world of Hogwarts and wizardry behind her. 

Based on the real Colonia Dignidad, which was a cult in the South of Chile that was led by the German preacher Paul Schafer, Colonia’s trailer, from Yahoo, makes it clear that it will be a dark and brooding thriller, one which sees Emma Watson’s charcter put through quite an ordeal. 

Colonia is set in 1973, and has at its heart Emma Watson’s Lena and Daniel Bruhl’s Daniel, a newly married couple who find themselves embroiled in a Chilean military coup during a period of mass protest against the regime of General Augusto Pinochet. 

The politically active couple are torn apart after Daniel is kidnapped by DINA, Pinochet's secret police. Lena immediately vows to track down and save her husband, which leads her to Colonia Dignidad. Presented as a charity, it is actually a cult, and is completely cut off from the rest of the world. Despite knowing the gravity of the situation, Emma Watson’s Lena decides to infiltrate the cult in order to try and rescue her husband. 

Colonia’s trailer does a fine job of setting up and teasing just how intense the thriller will be. There’s a haunting, creepy beauty about Florian Gallenberger’s direction too, which is almost surreal but still incredibly daunting and peculiar. From the look of things, Lena and Daniel’s pursuit to escape Colonia is only going to lead the pair into a murky and disturbing world of dangerous experiments and secret tunnels that the cult has running.

The actor who really steals this new trailer, however, is Michael Nyqvist - whose prowess as a villain has seen him cast as such in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and John Wick. Nyqvist looks to be in fine fettle in Colonia, especially since his character's appearance pays more than a little resemblance to Ghostbusters 2’s Vigo the Carphatian. 

The response to Colonia at Toronto Film Festival was only mixed, but you’ll be able to judge for yourself when it gets a limited release and drops on video on demand on April 15. 

For some reason, Marvel proper hasn’t really acknowledged the inclusion of Baron Zemo in Captain America: Civil War. Thankfully, the actor playing him is all too happy to discuss the comic book villain. Oscar nominee Daniel Bruhl (Rush) spoke up again in a recent interview and revealed an interesting but sort of expected change coming to the character.

In the comics, Zemo is known for wearing a purple cloak around his face and body to hide the scars he received when a vat of his own creation, called Adhesive X, spilled on him. According to Bruhl, the version of Zemo that will appear in Civil War is a looser adaptation and will not have his signature mask. He told Business Insider,

Why this shouldn’t be too surprising is Marvel’s history of loosely adapting characters for the screen. Baron von Strucker, for one, doesn’t have the bionic arm he’s often depicted with in the comics, and Scarlet Witch was channeling witchy goth realness in Age of Ultron.

Zemo is said to be a major villain to come out of the events of Civil War. The film focuses on the aftermath of Avengers: Age of Ultron, in which Captain America is leading his new team of Avengers on missions around the world. When another international incident involving Earth’s mightiest heroes occurs, the governments of the world unite to pass harsher restrictions on superhuman activity. This action forces a split between the Avengers, with some siding with Iron Man in favor of the initiative and others forming around Cap to go against it.

It’s still unclear how Baron Zemo factors into all of this, though Elizabeth Olsen, who returns as "the wild card" Scarlet Witch, referred to him as "the main villain." Perhaps he’s the one who pulled the scarred body of Frank Grillo’s Brock Rumlow out of the rubble, and perhaps it’s him who’ll transform him into Crossbones. Bruhl is also signed on for multiple films and rumored to appear in Doctor Strange with Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Tilda Swinton, and Rachel McAdams. That already pegs him as an important character.

Civil War features a massive cast of characters that includes Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, Don Cheadle’s War Machine, Paul Bettany’s Vision, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Emily VanCamp’s Agent 13, and Martin Freeman in a still mysterious role. The film will open in theaters on May 6, 2016.

After taking on Red Skull, Arnim Zola, and Baron Strucker, Baron Helmut Zemo will be the next adversary Captain America battles on the big screen. Zemo, played by Daniel Brühl, will be one of several antagonists appearing next year in Captain America: Civil War, but Marvel hasn’t divulged his exact role in the film. Given his status in the comics, many assumed he would be the main villain, but that hasn’t been made clear until now. Despite reports last year that Crossbones would be Captain America: Civil War’s primary antagonist, it now appears that particular honor belongs to Zemo.

Elizabeth Olsen, now well known to audiences as Scarlet Witch, confirmed this with French outlet Premiere, and she also explained why Baron Zemo is a more unique villain compared to Avengers: Age of Ultron’s eponymous antagonist. Olsen said:

It was reported last month that the conflict between the superheroes in Captain America: Civil War will spark following an incident involving Crossbones. It was originally reported that the villain's explosive vest going off would result in civilian casualties, although with last month's D23 footage shwoing him alive following a fight with Cap, it remains to be seen what the incting incident actually will be. Regardles, eventually new legislation will be drafted to police the world’s superhumans. No doubt Zemo will step in to take advantage of this new status quo and enact his evil plan while everyone’s attention is diverted. It also wouldn’t be surprising if Zemo either was in cahoots with Crossbones to make all this happen, or is working with politicians behind the scenes to make sure the Avengers and other superhero teams are under their thumb.

Following in his father Heinrich’s footsteps, Helmut Zemo has been a recurring adversary for Captain America and his allies since the 1970s. One of his more recent accomplishments was revealing Bucky Barnes’ dark past as the Winter Soldier to the public. It’s possible Brühl’s Zemo will have something similar planned for Steve Rogers. While the Star Spangled Avenger is having a disagreement with Tony Stark, Zemo may try to tarnish Steve’s reputation, or drive a wedge between the people he is close with. On the other hand, maybe Zemo’s after something more traditional, like world conquest or becoming exorbitantly wealthy, and this Civil War will help him accomplish those goals.

With all the recent news about which superheroes will battle each other next year in Captain America: Civil War, no one would blame you for forgetting that the film actually has a legitimate primary antagonist: Baron Helmut Zemo, who will be played by Daniel Brühl. Although he is one of Captain America’s greatest enemies in the comics, there is next to no information on how he’s being used in the film other than he will be doing his damnedest to destroy the Star Spangled Avenger. Now that Captain America: Civil War has wrapped principal photography, Marvel will hopefully start peeling back the layers of the character via announcements, stills and a trailer, but in the meantime, we want to take our own crack at how Zemo might be handled in the Captain America threequel.

In order to deduce what this version of Zemo will be up to in Captain America: Civil War, we need to go over the comic book history of not just Helmut, but his father Heinrich as well. Heinrich was one of the more dangerous Nazi bad guys that Steve Rogers went up against during World War II. During one of their battles, Cap’s shield struck a vat of the experimental substance Adhesive X, which landed on Heinrich’s face and bonded the mask he was wearing permanently to his face. Swearing revenge on Cap, Heinrich orchestrated the event that led to Cap being frozen and Bucky’s presumed death. When Captain America woke up in the present day (which at that time was the 1960s), Heinrich was determined to kill his old foe and organized the Masters of Evil to help him, but after several battles with Cap and the Avengers, he was killed by an avalanche. Presumably if Heinrich is seen/mentioned in the movie, he will be changed to Helmut’s grandfather given how much time has passed since World War II.

After his father’s death, Helmut inherited the evil Zemo legacy. Like Heinrich, his face was also covered with Adhesive X, although he fortunately was not wearing his own mask during the accident. Although his early appearances painted him as a clear villain, it was while he led various iterations of the Thunderbolts that he tried to help the world as he saw fit, though eventually he regressed to his devious ways. One of his more recent endeavors was revealing to the public Bucky’s actions as the Winter Solider, which is a plot that could easily be adapted for Captain America: Civil War. After all, only a select few know Bucky is still alive in the MCU, and if his brainwashed actions are leaked, then it would taint Cap’s reputation and lead to an outcry over what Bucky had done. I imagine Tony Stark wouldn’t take it well learning that his former teammate’s best friend was the one that killed his parents, for example.

This brings us to the version of Zemo we’ll see on the big screen next year, who is almost certainly the "new enemy" alluded to in the film’s synopsis. So far all of Captain America’s enemies in his solo movies (and the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron) have been affiliated with HYDRA, but it remains to be seen whether that will be the case with Zemo. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume he has a connection to HYDRA, especially if Heinrich worked with the Red Skull. However, while Ant-Man and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have shown the terrorist organization to still be active, they don’t hold the same power they once did following their exposure in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the deaths of leaders like Alexander Pierce and Baron Strucker. Zemo likely has his own vast resources at his disposal, so while his family have may connections to the Nazis and/or HYDRA in this universe, he should be able to accomplish his goals without their help.

One thing that is likely is that Zemo will have some hand in the forced registration of superhumans. It’s rumored that Crossbones will be the one that ignites the incident that leads the world’s governments to take action against the Avengers, but who’s to say he was working alone? Perhaps Zemo and Crossbones were in cahoots, and this explosive incident was the first step towards Zemo’s master plan. Why would he do all this? While it would be nice to believe that he’s trying to make the world a better place, his true reasons are probably more malevolent. My guess is with the Avengers being monitored, these restrictions will make it easier for him to accomplish his secret goals (namely seizing power), and with their conflict amongst each other over the registration, they won’t realize what’s he’s really up to… except for Cap, of course. Regardless, don’t be surprised if we see Zemo working with various world leaders and politicians (including possibly Martin Freeman’s still-unidentified character) behind the scenes to ensure everything happens according to plan.

There are endless rumors and rumblings surrounding every big comic book movie, and Marvel’s upcoming Captain America: Civil War is no exception. As the actors prepare for production to begin (Chris Evans publicly lamented shaving off his winter beard to get ready to reprise his role as Cap), we now have confirmation about one of the villains.

We knew that Daniel Bruhl has been cast, and we’ve even heard that he’ll play the villainous Baron Zemo. While this has been widely accepted as truth, Bruhl himself recently confirmed these reports, months after being cast. Talking to The Independent, the 36-year-old Spanish-German actor admitted that will play Zemo, adding:

The purple-masked Baron Zemo is one of Captain America’s most prominent enemies, and over the years there have actually be two incarnations to contend with. The first Baron was Heinrich Zemo, a Nazi scientist Cap fights during World War 2, and who ultimately perishes in combat. In Civil War, Bruhl will play the second version of the antagonist, Helmut Zemo, who is the son of the original, and who follows in his father’s footsteps looking for a spot of revenge.

Helmut Zemo is an interesting case because he’s an ambiguous villain, one who can pass as a good guy when he needs to wants to, or at least when it suits him. It’s looking more and more likely that he’ll embrace some of this uncertainty in Civil War. In the arc in the comics, he essentially plays both sides, recruiting villains for the pro-registration side of the superhero conflict, at the request of Tony Stark and Iron Man, while he also helps Cap escape from custody. It remains to see how the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes use of Baron Zemo—they’ve never been opposed to tweaking stories to fit their needs—but given his role in the source material, he is certainly going to be an interesting character to keep an eye on.

As we get closer and closer to the start of production on Captain America: Civil War, what we know is coming into increasing focus. We now know that Frank Grillo’s Crossbones character is responsible for the inciting event that leads to the government enacting the Superhero Registration Act, which requires superheroes to reveal their secret identities and register with the authorities. This causes a great divide amongst the powered people, and Captain America finds himself as the leader of the side that opposes this legislation, while Iron Man heads up the pro-registration faction.

Whatever his precise role in this drama, Baron Zemo looks to have an important part to play, and we can’t wait to watch it all go down on screen. Captain America: Civil War hits theaters on May 6, 2016.

Earlier today, it was reported that Daniel Bruhl’s mysterious villain role in Captain America: Civil War has been identified as Baron Zemo. The purple-masked evildoer ranks as one of Captain America’s most notable antagonists, and will follow in the footsteps of Red Skull, Arnim Zola, Winter Soldier and Batroc the Leaper as members of Cap’s cinematic rogues gallery.

But while Baron Zemo is a prime choice to antagonize the titular hero in Captain America: Civil War, there are many Marvel Cinematic Universe fans out there unfamiliar with the character’s history in the comics. To get you prepped on what to expect from him in 2016, here are the five important facts you need to know:

5. Baron Zemo Is A Legacy Title

It’s important to note that in Marvel comics, there are two main Baron Zemos: Heinrich, who fought Captain America during World War II, and Helmut, who took up a life of supervillainy after his father’s death. We don’t know exactly which one Daniel Bruhl will be playing, but it’s worth noting that they are only the latest in a long line of Baron Zemos stretching back centuries. In fact, during the miniseries "Thunderbolts Presents: Zemo - Born Better," Helmut met many of his ancestors when he was thrown back in time by Songbird. Starting in the early 1500s, with each time jump forward, he met another Baron Zemo and almost always got into a confrontation with them. Although these time travel shenanigans will certainly not be included in Captain America: Civil War, hopefully the movie will address the lineage of Zemos that preceded him, showing that his hunger for power is genetic.

4. Baron Zemo Doesn’t Have Any Choice Wearing The Mask

The strange purple mask Baron Zemo is always shown wearing isn’t just used to intimidate enemies. In fact, both Heinrich and Helmut were forced to wear them due to horrible injuries. Heinrich was wearing the mask when Captain America attacked his base during World War II. During the fight, the patriotic hero threw his shield and struck a vat of Adhesive X, a super adhesive Zemo created for the Nazis that could not be dissolved under any circumstances. The chemical fell on Zemo’s face and permanently attached the mask to his face. In Helmut’s case, he fell into a vat of Adhesive X, but simply wears the purple head covering to hide his horrible disfigurement. Superhero films have a habit of not keeping characters wearing face covering masks for too long, so if something happens to Zemo’s face in the film, it will either be towards the end or the scaring won’t be as bad as it is in the comics.

3. Heinrich Was Originally Responsible For Captain America’s Disappearance During World War II

During the last months of World War II in Marvel Comics, Captain America and Bucky attacked Baron Zemo’s stronghold to prevent him from launching an experimental aircraft, but they were taken prisoner and tied to the plane, which was set to explode. The duo managed to free themselves, but they didn’t make it off the plane unscathed. Captain America fell into the icy waters below and was frozen for many decades, while Bucky lost his arm and was presumed dead until the present day (where, like in the movies, he would emerge as The Winter Soldier). In the MCU, Steve Rogers was frozen after crashing Red Skull’s aircraft into the Arctic in Captain America: The First Avenger, but if they still wanted to connect Zemo to this, they could mention that the elder Zemo was involved with the Red Skull’s experiments with the Tesseract.

2. Baron Zemo Was The Leader Of The Thunderbolts

One of the most notable arcs of the last 20 years in Marvel Comics found the villain group known as the Masters of Evil disguise themselves a hero team called The Thunderbolts – and this was all organized under the leadership of Baron Zem. Taking different identities, the supervillains attempted to gain the world’s trust as new superheroes so they could conquer it. Eventually Zemo began to believe his own lie, thinking that the only way he could legitimately save the world was by taking it over. He started to recruit more villains to his cause, and similarly to DC’s Suicide Squad, the Thunderbolts started working for the U.S. government in the aftermath of Civil War (on the request of Tony Stark). Given his status as a primary villain in Captain America: Civil War , however, don’t expect the big screen version of Zemo to immediately appear altruistic - although it would be an interesting twist if he puts together of a team of villains that Tony recruits for his own purposes by the end of the film.

1. Baron Zemo Outed Bucky As The Winter Soldier To The Public

As Marvel fans know, it was Bucky Barnes a.k.a. The Winter Soldier who took up the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers was "killed" after Civil War. It was at this time that the Helmut version of Baron Zemo discovered that his father’s assassination attempt had failed during World War II, and learned about Bucky’s time as the Soviet Unions’ brainwashed assassin. Angered that the new Captain America had earned forgiveness for his crimes so quickly while Zemo was still being scorned despite his good actions in recent years, Zemo leaked evidence of Bucky’s former identity to the media, effectively ruining his reputation. With Winter Soldier set to return for Captain America: Civil War, this version of Zemo may pull the same stunt and attempt to stick it to Captain America by targeting his best friend. If Bucky’s crimes are exposed to the public, this could also be one of the catalysts for the divided between Tony and Steve, as it was shown in Captain America: The Winter Soldier that Bucky killed Stark’s parents.

It appears that when the third solo film for Marvel’s juiced, justice-seeking, integrity-oozing Avenger, Captain America: Civil War hits next year, our hero can cross another one of his signature comic book nemeses off the list. With the addition of actor Daniel Bruhl to the cast, speculation began running rampant as to the identity of his character. Well, if there’s any truth to the latest report, then it looks like Bruhl will be donning the purple mantle of none other than Baron Zemo!

According to a recent Walt Disney/Marvel Studio casting report, it looks like Daniel Bruhl has been listed as being "cast as Baron Zemo." The move certainly would not come from out of left field, as fans have been eagerly anticipating the big screen debut of Zemo since the Captain America film series began. In terms of A-list villains in the Cap comic book title, Baron Zemo most definitely ranks among the top. However, when it comes to the annals of comic book history, there have been two Baron Zemos. Which one will we get from Bruhl, the actor who starred in Inglourious Basterds and has already shared the screen with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in Rush? Well, perhaps that can be safely speculated by the context of the film.

The title of Baron Zemo is more of a legacy than anything, representing a long and storied history of virulent villainy that stretches back to several generations. Heinrich Zemo was introduced early in Cap’s Silver Age revival by way of retcon as a mad scientist villain who tangled often with Cap during the World War II era (while sporting what almost appears to be a Crown Royal bag over his head) and was even responsible for the "death" of Bucky, before getting himself killed battling Cap. The current Zemo, introduced later in the Silver Age era of the Captain America comics, is Helmut Zemo, his son. Like his father, Helmut, the 13th Baron Zemo, is a scientific genius, though his path has been far longer and vastly more nuanced over the years.

Helmut, whose face was horribly scarred in battle (another legacy shared with his dad), has tangled with Cap and his friends in various revenge plots over the legacy of his family. However, it has been his more recent exploits in the last few decades that have defined the more significant and nuanced aspects of his character. Besides countless evil plots over the years, Zemo led the villainous Masters of Evil. However, he was also responsible for founding the original lineup of Thunderbolts, a team of supervillains that attempted to sell themselves to the public as heroes. The pathological megalomaniacal proclivities of Zemo even led to himself believing his own bogus beneficence, leading to a stint as a quasi-hero. This plays perfectly into an aspect of the Civil War storyline that the film adapts, in which Tony Stark, a proponent of the Superhero Registration Act, begins, problematically, to recruit villains he believes to be reformed to his cause of transparency and official codification to the profession of superherodom. However, look for Bruhl's Baron Zemo to be motivated by a secret agenda of revenge.

Captain America: Civil War blurs the lines way better than Robin Thicke ever will when it hits theaters on May 6, 2016.

Marvel recently announced that Rush actor Daniel Bruhl has been cast in Captain America: Civil War. While the original press release didn’t indicate what his role is, several outlets are reporting that he will be playing a villain, with one rumor stating that he could show up in Doctor Strange as the main antagonist. Whatever this mysterious role is, it’s clear this isn’t anything minor. Bruhl will be a major player in the MCU in 2016!

Since the original Civil War storyline focused on the conflict between the pro-registration and anti-registration forces, it’s unclear which villain Bruhl could play. One would think that Tony Stark would fill that role considering how he and Steve Rogers were at odds with each other in the comics. However, there are several villains that could be worked into the narrative, many from Cap’s rogues gallery and one from the Sorcerer Supreme’s. When the Civil War erupts, Steve Rogers may find himself facing one of these dangerous foes.

Baron Mordo

Having this villain go from a political thriller to a movie revolving around magic is an unusual choice. However, given that Doctor Strange is being released six months after Captain America: Civil War, it’s possible Marvel is using Cap’s third installment to set up the Sorcerer Supreme’s first outing. Out of Strange’s rogues gallery, Baron Mordo makes the most sense. Since this is adapting Civil War, there will likely be superpowered elements to the story, and Mordo can serve as our first glimpse at magic in the MCU. Even if he hasn’t learned sorcery yet, he could still be a powerful individual attempting to twist the Superhuman Registration towards his own goals, perhaps in an alliance with the main villain.

Nuke

The Russos have already said that William Burnside, the insane 1950s Captain America, won’t be in the film, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t see another crazed, patriotic soldier. In the comics, Nuke served in the Vietnam War and was put through experiments to turn him into a super-soldier like Captain America. While they were successful, he was also driven insane to the point that he believed he was still fighting in the war. Although Crossbones is being set up to return, Civil War may include Nuke as another mercenary/goon who is sent by the main villain to kill Captain America. Since he has the same enhanced physical abilities as Steve Rogers, he’ll prove to be a difficult challenge. Not only that, but with the America flag tattooed on his face, he’ll serve well as a twisted reflection of the Star-spangled Avenger.

Doctor Faustus

Faustus labels himself as the "Master of men’s minds," and considering his expertise in hypnotism and psychiatry, it’s an apt description. He worked with the Red Skull following the events of Civil War, and it was revealed that he was the one that brainwashed Sharon Carter into killing Steve Rogers. Although this movie is primarily focused on the Superhuman Registration Act, the story may also include elements from Captain America’s storyline following his death. Faustus may be working behind-the-scenes with a mysterious partner to defeat the hero, and since we saw Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it’s possible he’ll brainwash her into attacking Steve Rogers. Bruhl is younger than Faustus is typically portrayed, but he could pull off sinister psychologist.

A Revived Red Skull

The Red Skull may have disintegrated when he touched the Tesseract at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, but that doesn’t mean he died. After all, this is a comic book-inspired universe, and death isn’t always permanent. The Skull may have somehow returned to Earth in a new body, and now he’s seeking revenge against Captain America. Tony Stark may have ideological disagreements with Cap, but the Skull is willing to do whatever it takes to kill the patriotic hero. In this case, that means working behind the scenes and twisting the consequences of the Superhuman Registration Act to his own advantage. If this is the last solo Captain America we’ll be getting, this is a prime opportunity to bring back his greatest nemesis.

Baron Zemo

There are two Baron Zemos in the comics, both of whom are easily identifiable by their distinctive masks. The first was Heinrich Zemo, who fought Captain America in World War II and was responsible for the death of Bucky Barnes. The second is his son Helmut Zemo, who took up his father’s mantle and has clashed with Cap and other Marvel heroes over the years. Zemo is one of the few major villains from Cap’s rogues gallery that hasn’t been introduced in the MCU, so the third installment would be an excellent time to throw him into the fray.

Considering that we have Baron von Strucker and Daniel Whitehall as two Hydra villains who haven’t aged for decades, it’s best if they don’t go the same route with Heinrich. It would be much better to establish a legacy villain with Helmut, someone who has grew up hating Captain America from the stories he heard, and is now taking action against his family’s enemy. Not only is he a calculating genius, but he’ll also be a physical threat to Cap as well. On top of the Superhuman Registration Act nonsense, Cap will have to deal with Zemo’s vendetta. Man, these villains have horrible timing.

We just now learned that Daniel Bruhl is going to be part of the growing ensemble of Anthony and Joe Russo’s Captain America: Civil War, and already, there’s an interesting wrinkle that might suggest the actor is in for a longer haul that expected.

Buried at the bottom of its piece on Daniel Bruhl’s casting, Variety notes that the unidentified villain Bruhl "is not the main villain in Captain America: Civil War but could potentially be the top menace in Marvel’s Doctor Strange." Hold on, what? We don’t even have a Sorcerer Supreme in place yet. You are trying to tell me that Marvel locked up the main villain in Doctor Strange before a Stephen Vincent Strange has been hired? That’s like discovering the chicken long before you’ve even hatched the egg.

This wouldn’t be the first time that a component of the Doctor Strange universe was introduced in a Captain America movie. It was during a pivotal scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier that HYDRA agent Jasper Sitwell confessed that the Sorcerer was on a HYDRA watch list. "Bruce Banner, Stephen Strange… anyone who is a threat to HYDRA!" Listen to it here:

That was the first confession that Marvel President Kevin Feige had plans for a Doctor Strange movie. Those plans were confirmed, of course, during Marvel’s massive Phase Three announcement, giving Doctor Strange a juicy November 4, 2016 release date:

That puts it right after Captain America: Civil War, making it the second Marvel movie of 2016. So yes, in hindsight, it would make a lot of sense for Daniel Bruhl to be introduced as a villainous figure in Civil War, then have him bridge the gap to the Doctor Strange movie. Marvel’s excellent about laying foundations in their films, teasing out the next project. Having a gateway from Civil War to Doctor Strange feels right, on paper. Now’s a good time to mention that Bruhl worked with Benedict Cumberbatch on Disney’s The Fifth Estate. So can we just come out and confirm him as the Sorcerer Supreme, already? It would make life so much easier.

When it was revealed that Anthony and Joe Russo’s Captain America sequel would be subtitled Civil War, many assumed that Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark would be the natural villain – as Iron Man and Cap are on opposite sides of the battle in the Civil War storyline. But now we’re learning that there will be an actual villain… and we know who will play him.

Marvel breaks the news that Rush star Daniel Bruhl is set to join Captain America: Civil War, which will be in theaters on May 6, 2016. Deadline actually says that Bruhl will "play the villain role," but doesn’t reveal the name of the character Bruhl will play in the sequel. Commenters speculate that be might be playing Baron Zemo, a villain who has been part of Cap’s legacy. Then again, he could end up playing a tertiary character like Batroc the Leaper – who had only one scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Back to Daniel Bruhl's casting, you may recognize the actor from his role as Fredrick Zoller in Inglourious Basterds...

And he has some Kevin-Bacon-esque degrees of separation from a few major players in the MCU. Last year, he terrorized Chris Hemsworth in Ron Howard’s racing epic, Rush:

And he also shared the screen alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the little-seen The Fifth Estate.

Here’s where things get really interesting. Cumberbatch, of course, has been the leading candidate to play Doctor Strange in a Marvel movie. And in their story on Daniel Bruhl’s casting, Variety says that Bruhl’s character "is not the main villain in Captain America: Civil War but could potentially be the top menace in Marvel’s Dr. Strange."

Marvel reunions left and right, and a ton of mystery surrounding this hire. What are your thoughts?

Let's all take a moment to thank Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds and the sensational foreign actors he's managed to bring into Hollywood's spotlight through it, like Michael Fassbender, Christoph Waltz, Diane Kruger, Melanie Laurent, and Daniel Brühl. Since Inglourious Basterds debuted, the Barcelona born Brühl has been popping up in a slew of American movies from the horror-thriller Intruders, to the cheeky indie sequel 2 Days In New York, and to a double dose of docudramas with Rush and The Fifth Estate. Fitting then that he's now in talks for Woman in Gold, another drama that has found its inspiration in real life.

Deadline reports Brühl has entered into negotiations to co-star in The Weinstein Company's Woman In Gold, which will be directed by My Week With Marilyn helmer Simon Curtis. Should he sign on, Brühl would join a cast that includes Ryan Reynolds and Helen Mirren.

The script by actress-turned-screenwriter Alexi Kaye Campbell was inspired by the life of Maria Altmann, a Jewish refugee from Nazi-occupied Austria. While her escape from the clutches of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich may make for a suspenseful movie on its own, this holocaust survivor's true claim to fame is how she reclaimed her family's collection of Gustav Klimt paintings, which had been stolen by the Nazis during World War II. Her legal battle to regain these works will be the focus of Woman In Gold. The title itself likely refers to Klimt's 1907 painting Adele Bloch-Bauer I, a family portrait of sorts. Bloch-Bauer was Altmann's aunt.

Mirren will front the film as Altmann. Reynolds will play her lawyer, who took on her case despite having little to no background in art. For his part, Brühl will bring his mesmerizing sense of menace to the role of their adversary, a lawyer defending the Austrian government's claim to the paintings.

This is an intriguing production. Mirren is always a captivating leading lady. Reynolds seems to work best as a supporting star (The Proposal, Safe House), instead of a leading man (Green Lantern, R.I.P.D.). And we can anticipate Brühl will bring heat to the role of their legal rival. The behind the screen players here are more the film's wild cards. Campbell hasn't yet had a screenplay produced. And though My Week With Marilyn received critical praise, it was a feature that traded heavily in nostalgia. This method is less likely to work with the paintings of Klimt, which are beautiful, but don't hold the pop culture cachet of all things Monroe. So Curtis has a challenge ahead of him.

Woman In Gold is expected to roll into production this May. We expect to hear more casting announcements from TWC very soon.

“I now much better understand that,” a gentleman exclaimed as we exited the Elgin Theatre following a premiere screening of Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate. Despite his poor grammatical choices, this Toronto International Film Festival patron was proud to announce that he had a firm handle on the multi-faceted WikiLeaks scandal, and the role Web site founder Julian Assange played in what is described as the largest confidential information leak in world history.

That makes one of us.

Condon, himself, leaks hefty amounts of information on his audience as he tries to create All the Presidents Men for the Wikipedia generation. He recreates the early days of WikiLeaks, when Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and like-minded prop hacker Daniel Berg (Daniel Bruhl) created a cyber safe haven for corporate and political whistleblowers. The movie builds to the moral conflicts waged over the release of “the war documents” – thousands of classified papers co-published by The Guardian, The New York Times and Der Spiegel that gave crucial insight into U.S. military actions in the Middle East. It’s a compelling narrative, and in the final 30 minutes of his ripped-from-the-headlines exercise, the urgency of tech-driven Web journalism and the weight of its potential global impact finally work hand in hand to help the director generate palpable tension.

But The Fifth Estate encounters a few obstacles on the way to its riveting conclusion, most generated by Josh Singer’s melodramatic screenplay. Assange is a mystery, a techno-savior who spouts hollow platitudes about changing the world through transparency. Viewed through Berg’s eyes, we’re never sure we can fully trust Assange, which frees Cumberbatch up to play him several different ways. As much as I admire Cumberbatch as a performer, I found him miscast as Assange. The polished actor doesn't embody the anarchistic cyber-punk spirit that Assange is supposed to represent. In fact, Condon often tries to spice up Estate with distracting visual tricks meant to simulate the rock-and-roll anti-establishment war cry of the WikiLeaks rebels. But pretending to be rebellious so that your mission looks dangerous is a deadly line to walk, particularly when you misfire.

Convoluted and a bit too slick for its subject matter, The Fifth Estate raises too many interesting questions about online journalism and the accomplishments of Assange to fully dismiss it. The collaboration of Old Media outlets on WikiLeaks’ largest story truly was unprecedented, and while attempts at discrediting Assange have stumbled, his influence on the field of modern journalism can not be overlooked. Someday, WikiLeaks will get its own equivalent of The Social Network only with so much information to disseminate, I suspect it’s going to have to come in documentary form-- and with Alex Gibney's We Steal Secrets already out there, it may already have.

"The closer you are to death, the more alive you feel."

That's the kind of quote you'd expect to hear from a guy who lives by putting his life on the line, and that's the kicker moment of this new trailer (via MSN UK) for Rush, the drama from Ron Howard and his Frost/Nixon screenwriter Peter Morgan. Chris Hemsworth tries a British accent on for size in a non-Thor role as James Hunt, the Formula One racing driver whose rivalry with Austrian Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) makes up the core of the film. The injury you see midway through the trailer was a real accident at the 1976 German Grand Prix, which left Lauda with extensive facial scarring and took away much of his right ear.

Howard has said the film will be as much about the rivalry as the thrill of the race, and Hemsworth and Bruhl look like apt rivals here, each of them insanely talented and charismatic actors bringing a lot of intensity to their roles. Howard is clearly a fan of the work Hemsworth is doing, with plans to reunite with him in the whaling drama In The Heart of the Sea, and Bruhl has already moved on to a huge role opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in The Fifth Estate (you can get a look at the two of them in costume here).

Rush is coming to British theaters on September 13, and a week later in the United States, on September 20.

Not surprisingly, Paz Vega has signed on to play the leading role in Castro’s Daughter, telling the story of Alina Fernandez, illegitimate daughter of Fidel Castro who escaped to Spain in 1993 and became one of his harshest critics and a political activist. This shouldn’t come as a huge shock gvein that the two obvious choices for the role were Vega and Penelope Cruz, who are essentially the same person.

Also hopping on board this political biopic is Daniel Bruhl whose name you may not yet recognize, but is unforgettable as the Nazi movie star Fredrick Zoller in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. Rounding out the cast is the lovely Mia Maestro, but both of their roles have yet to be announced.

According to Variety, the film was co-written by Nilo Cruz and Award winning co-writer of Crash Bobby Moresco, based off Alina Fernandez’ book of the same name published in 1998.
