NBC wrapped one of its medical dramas back in early 2023 with the series finale of New Amsterdam, starring Ryan Eggold as Dr. Max Goodwin. The show ended with a two-hour finale event after five seasons, but two hours weren't enough to answer every single question about the characters and their futures. Now, a sequel series is in the works, and the premise leaves me wondering if New Amsterdam fans could get to see the footage that didn't make it into the finale in 2023.

New Amsterdam's Potential Sequel Series

The potential sequel in the works at NBC is tentatively titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow and would center on Luna Goodwin, according to Deadline, set three decades after the main events of the original series. The premise makes sense with how the original show ended, as the final scene was actually a flash-forward with Luna as a doctor who fully embraces her dad's "How can I help?" approach to medicine and role as New Amsterdam medical director.

If ordered to series, the project would reportedly explore the impact of artificial intelligence on the medical industry. New Amsterdam creator, executive producer, and showrunner David Schulner is developing the project for NBC, with fellow New Amsterdam alum Peter Horton on board as director and executive producer. Molly Griggs of Dr. Death and Prodigal Son played adult Luna in the original show; it's not clear if she'd reprise the role for the sequel.

It remains to be seen if New Amsterdam: Tomorrow will get a series order and a slot later in the 2024 TV schedule, but this is encouraging news for fans of the original who weren't quite ready to say a permanent goodbye to that world. It was clear pretty quickly after the show ended that there was still interest, as the medical drama was quickly trending on Netflix.

The Scene Cut From The Series Finale

I spoke with New Amsterdam executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton for the finale back in 2023, including how Max ultimately chose to prioritize Luna over a relationship with Wilder or any lingering feelings about Helen. The episode left the door open about whether he and Wilder reunited at some point between his departure for a new job in Geneva and the time jump ahead to adult Luna, and Schulner revealed that the footage answering that question had been shot. He shared:

At the time, David Schulner had no regrets about not filling in that blank canonically and leaving it for fans to decide what they think happened. While a series set 30 years after the original show wouldn't necessarily have an organic way to incorporate old footage – particularly since Ryan Eggold is reportedly not attached to the sequel – it seems fairly likely that the project would at least have to answer the question about what Max decided.

For his part, Peter Horton shared another reason why the open ending was a good fit for the New Amsterdam series finale:

I don't want to say that Peter Horton manifested NBC wanting to bring the world of New Amsterdam back, but a potential sequel going into development more than a year after the original show's finale definitely seems like the stars aligning!

In all seriousness, the wait is on for word on whether NBC moves forward with New Amsterdam: Tomorrow. For now, you can always find New Amsterdam streaming both via Netflix subscription and Peacock Premium subscription.

Medical drama New Amsterdam has come to an end on NBC after five seasons, with an emotional final run of episodes that concluded in a way that even the most diehard of fans may not have seen coming. Despite the show wrapping its run on network television, it has already found viewers via streaming. In fact, more than a week after the finale aired as a two-part event on January 17, New Amsterdam is trending in Netflix’s Top 10 TV shows. 

Like Manifest before it, New Amsterdam’s cancellation hasn’t meant that people won't check out the episodes. So, read on for how the show is still reaching an audience and what executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton had to say about bringing back one notable star for the finale and why the ending for Helen Sharpe “wasn’t on purpose.”

New Amsterdam Is Trending

At the time of writing, New Amsterdam is trending in the #3 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 TV shows, and it has had a spot in the Top 10 for several days. This is particularly notable due to Netflix subscribers only having access to two of the five seasons that aired on NBC. Viewers will have to head over to Peacock for a subscription to find all five seasons streaming. 

New Amsterdam is also currently listed among the trending series on Peacock, although without a ranking like what Netflix provides. All things considered, the medical drama is doing exceptionally well on streaming for a show that recently aired its series finale! 

In the wake of that finale, let’s dig into what the executive producers had to say about the return of Daniel Dae Kim as Dr. Cassian Shin, who they couldn’t get back before the end, and why Helen’s story concluded the way that it did.

How New Amsterdam Got Daniel Dae Kim Back (And Not Freema Agyeman)

News that Daniel Dae Kim would join the cast of New Amsterdam broke in early 2020, not too long before production shutdowns began happening across the country due to the spread of the COVID pandemic. Kim’s debut episode was pulled due to sensitive subject matter in light of the pandemic, and his entrance was different from the original plan. 

In a fun surprise for fans, trauma surgeon Dr. Cassian Shin made one last appearance in the series finale as one of the very many doctors who contributed to the surgery that would save a single mom’s life. Executive producer David Schulner explained how the unexpected cameo happened, saying:

The climactic surgery of New Amsterdam’s very last episode required all surgical hands on deck, which brought back Cassian as a trauma surgeon and Agnes as a top neurologist to join forces with Reynolds and Wilder. Daniel Dae Kim didn’t get a lot of screen time, but the actor was evidently willing to accommodate the show for however he was needed. Given that his character didn’t get a particularly big farewell, one last check-in was nice before the final credits rolled. 

That said, there is one particularly notable character who didn’t get their one last check-in. According to the executive producers, it wasn't for lack of trying. When asked if there were any cameos they were hoping for but ultimately didn’t work out, EP Peter Horton immediately said “Freema,” and David Schulner elaborated:

Freema Agyeman’s final appearance in New Amsterdam proved to be Episode 11 (directed by Peter Horton), when she returned to New York briefly and wanted to spend some time with Max. The show had to recycle footage from past seasons, however, and the last scenes that she filmed were for Season 4. She did lend her voice to the Season 5 premiere, though! So, what did the EPs have to say about how her story ended?

Why Helen's Ending 'Wasn't On Purpose'

With Freema Agyeman not making an appearance in the finale, the last that fans heard about Helen was that she skewed a cancer drug trial to focus on predominately white participants, with the assumed goal that she did it to get Max the drugs he needed to save his life because she loved him. Helen wasn’t able to give her side of the story, but Max and Wilder deemed it unethical and established that they wouldn’t have done the same thing. 

It was a surprising twist that fans couldn’t have seen coming ahead of Episode 12, which was the first of two episodes that aired on finale night. The executive producers opened up about how they came up with that ending for Helen’s character, with David Schulner saying:

The bosses had previously teased that “closure is never closure” after Max decided not to see Helen again and instead pursue a future with Wilder. According to Schulner, the drug trial story came before the decision to incorporate Helen into it rather than planning this storyline for Helen and then brainstorming the drug trial. It painted her character in a different light than when fans last saw her in the Season 4 finale, and Peter Horton explained his perspective on it:

The love story of Sharpwin ultimately didn’t prove to be endgame for New Amsterdam, but the show also didn’t end with Max settling down in any romantic relationship. In fact, there was originally a clue about his choice that was ultimately cut from the finale, with the message clear that he was prioritizing Luna over anybody and anything else.

Spoilers ahead for the last two episodes of New Amsterdam on NBC, called “Right Place” and “How Can I Help?”

New Amsterdam has officially come to an end, fittingly with an episode titled “How Can I Help?” and featuring the doctors coming together and pulling out all the stops to save a mother's life. They pulled the nearly impossible surgery off, at the cost of Max not being able to take Luna to the mermaid parade before they moved to Geneva for him to take a job with the World Health Organization. The series didn’t end with Max asking a whole new crowd how he can help, but there was a Goodwin making a speech: a surprise flash-forward revealed adult Luna as the new medical director at New Amsterdam! 

Executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton spoke with CinemaBlend about the surprise ending, and a Max moment that didn’t make the cut for the finale. Young Luna spent most of the episode upset with her dad for not taking her to the mermaid parade, until he finally explained that everybody had to come together to save somebody’s mom. He promised that she’d never remember this day anyway, but that wasn’t the case after all. It would be the day that she realized she wanted to be a doctor, leading to a final scene of a grown up Luna taking her father’s former place as medical director. 

David Schulner – who also co-wrote the series finale – opened up about how the show landed on the adult Luna reveal as the end, saying: 

New Amsterdam was officially cancelled back in March 2022, while Season 4 was still airing. The silver lining was that there was still one full (albeit shorter than usual) season left, with thirteen episodes to build up to the end. Apparently, the first person to throw their support behind the adult Luna twist was none other than David Schulner’s daughter! As she wasn’t exactly a staff writer at the age of 11, Schulner wasn’t immediately on board, but she wasn’t the only one pitching this final scene. The EP continued:

If three people independently came up with the same ending, how could the executive producers go with anything else? It’s no wonder that actor Jocko Sims described the series’ conclusion as “a wonderful ending that puts a nice, beautiful bow on this wonderful journey we’ve had.” Schulner went on: 

It was inevitable that New Amsterdam would need a new medical director after the reveal that Max was relocating to Geneva. Not many fans likely predicted that Max’s final scene would actually just be a quiet moment with his daughter, and she would ultimately get the last scene of the show. According to executive producer Peter Horton, Max’s final moment had to be about making a choice: 

While Max’s relationship with Wilder had been going well and he even got some degree of closure about his former romance with Helen, there was only one person who he could prioritize over everybody else: his daughter. The finale ended before revealing what their life is like after they leave New York, but I like to imagine that it has included at least one mermaid parade. 

Of course, Max’s final scene with Wilder left the door open for him to potentially return someday, and there were no hard feelings that he was leaving. Whether he actually ever did is a blank that New Amsterdam just didn’t fill in. When I asked the executive producers if there was an answer as to whether or not he came back, David Schulner said:

There was an ending that would have shed some more light on Max’s future beyond his departure from New Amsterdam as medical director, but was ultimately cut. According to Schulner, letting viewers imagine their own scenario works better than giving a hard answer one way or the other. Peter Horton shared another perk of not definitively answering every single question:

New Amsterdam had happy endings to go around with the series finale. Gabrielle decided to stay in New York with Reynolds, and fans got to see a glimpse of the whole family gathered together, looking much happier than in the earlier flashback. Iggy and Martin remarried each other, fulfilling Tyler Labine’s high hopes for their relationship. Bloom reunited with her sister at an NA meeting after getting a clearer picture of the new life (and new apartment) that she wants to build for herself. Even Daniel Dae Kim turned up one last time as Dr. Cassian Shin! 

Wilder’s future was a little less clear, but she seemed more or less at peace with Max’s decision. Plus, even though there wasn’t enough time for the show to reveal much about adult Luna, I think it’s safe to say that she’s not going to be a medical director like Veronica Fuentes in Season 4. 

As for whether New Amsterdam will ever return to NBC… well, fans can always hope. Ryan Eggold has already landed a new TV show, so he won’t be absent from the small screen for too long. The end is already nigh for New Amsterdam, as the show returned in 2023 with just three episodes left, and two airing on the same night. The fifth and final season will conclude with two episodes on January 17, which means NBC devoting nearly a full night of primetime to fans getting to say goodbye to Max and Co. With the hours counting down until the beginning of the end, executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton spoke about the last two episodes.

The end has been hyped as a two-hour finale event in promos on NBC, and fans have known for months that New Amsterdam would get a bigger farewell than just the usual one episode per Tuesday night. When I spoke with the executive producers ahead of the finale and asked if it was always the plan for a two-parter at the very end, David Schulner responded: 

While the finale is able to be promoted as a two-hour event, that wasn’t the original plan and fans evidently shouldn’t go into Tuesday night expecting Episode 12 and Episode 13 to feel like two halves of a whole, with one flowing right into the next. Peter Horton elaborated on the situation:

New Amsterdam didn’t air last week due to the Golden Globes taking over NBC to reveal the winners with Jerrod Carmichael as host after the awards were not broadcast on television in 2022. The Golden Globes took up all three hours of primetime, which meant that the medical drama had to take the week off. 

The final two airing back-to-back means that the one that aired back on January 3 (directed by Peter Horton) was more or less the penultimate episode, and a whole lot happened in the span of the hour. On top of an outdoors adventure going horribly wrong for the doctors (complete with a guide who lost her leg and a head wound for Iggy), Max had to face the test of whether or not he would see Helen again. 

Max ultimately decided not to see his former fiancée, and instead went to Wilder to confirm to her that he wants a future with her rather than dwelling on the past with Helen. The New Amsterdam bosses have weighed in on whether that was enough for Max to get closure. David Schulner shared his thoughts on how well Episode 11 works as the penultimate episode, saying:

New Amsterdam and Game of Thrones may not exactly exist in the same genre of television, but David Schulner is optimistic about Episode 11 working perfectly as a setup for the finale, even though that wasn’t the original plan. The executive producers also aren’t the only ones from the show who have been hyping what to look forward to in how the medical drama wraps. Jocko Sims, who plays Reynolds, shared that he was excited for fans to learn more about the doctors and their pasts, while Tyler Labine – a.k.a. Iggy – explained what he hopes makes fans happy with the ending.

Helen returning and reaching out stressed Max out enough that he was ready to leave the hospital for an ill-fated day in the wilderness, but ultimately gave him the clarity to realize that he wanted to pursue a future with Wilder rather than revisit the relationship that ended in heartbreak. When the executive producers spoke with CinemaBlend about the final episodes of the series, I asked if Episode 11 gave Max closure or if there’s still time in the two-part finale event for some curveballs about Helen, and Peter Horton said: 

Helen’s return to New York didn’t mean a new heartfelt Sharpwin scene to give Max some more answers than he got from the letter that involved actress Freema Agyeman participating in the Season 5 premiere. That wasn’t altogether surprising after the reveal that New Amsterdam wanted to bring Helen back more to test Max’s resolve than restart their relationship. Time was running out in the serise! After ten episodes of trying to move forward, he finally achieved it in Episode 11, with two more left to go. According to David Schulner, Max will never just forget her: 

Max actually went through the heartache of losing a woman he deeply loved early in the series, when wife Georgia died in a horrific accident. It took some time for him to be able to move forward without any feelings of guilt; would he have taken more time with Wilder if time wasn’t running out with the series finale approaching quickly? Whatever happens in those last two episodes, the executive producer established that the women he has loved stay with him.

The fall finale of New Amsterdam was an emotional one, to say the least, as Lauren dealt with her sister overdosing, and Elizabeth Wilder tried to figure out if she should accept a new job offer that would have her leave the hospital, to name just two of the twists. Perhaps the biggest emotional shocker of the episode was the fact that when Max and Elizabeth finally found their groove together, Helen appeared on a late-night talk show, and it was revealed she’s in the city.

Fans will remember that when Max and Helen were getting ready to wed in the Season 4 finale, Helen heartbreakingly called Max from London, indicating she couldn’t go through with it. Freema Agyeman announced her departure and it was unclear if she would return before the medical drama ended. The episode shook things up for New Amsterdam, and Max was on his way to healing. With her shocking return, showrunner David Schulner tells TVLine why they decided to bring Helen back for the fall finale:

Although I do wish it could have happened at any other time, it does make sense to bring Helen back at a time when Max has started to move on. It was clear by his expression when he saw Helen on TV and heard she was back in New York that some feelings are still there, but how that will impact his relationship with Elizabeth should be interesting as the series winds down.

As for whether or not Helen’s return will make Max realize he still does want her (or does not) has yet to be seen, but David Schulner explains that his heart will be tested:

Max was heartbroken after losing Helen, and his daughter Luna was also taking it quite hard as she had warmed up to having a mum. Seeing how the show pays off on this twist is particularly interesting with the show ending soon and Wilder not taking the job away from the hospital. Whoever Max chooses will presumably be his endgame. It’s unknown how much the former couple have talked, if at all, since they parted ways, but when the show comes back in the new year, true feelings will be revealed. 

Meanwhile, New Amsterdam is getting a big farewell in 2023, but it will, unfortunately, be sooner than fans might hope. There are only three episodes left, with a two-hour series finale on January 17. While it is part of the 2023 TV schedule, fans will have to say goodbye to their favorite characters before the first month of the year comes to an end. How it ends, though, is still up in the air.

New Amsterdam returned to NBC for its fifth and final season that had to begin by addressing the end of Season 4. Sharpwin fans were dealt a serious blow when Helen called off their wedding from across the pond, and actress Freema Agyeman’s announcement over the summer meant that there wasn’t going to be a happy resolution in the fall. Now, star Ryan Eggold and executive producer David Schulner opened up about the Bollywood final scene of “TBD” and the “catharsis” that came with it.

The Season 5 premiere had some serious highs and lows, with the lows largely centering on Max’s efforts to move on from losing Helen… and Luna wondering where her “mum” is didn’t help. Freema Agyeman made a voice cameo in a letter that attempted to give Max some closure (and the bosses shared that they dropped clues in Season 4 to foreshadow the heartbreaking twist), and he was able to channel his energy into helping a young boy achieve his dying wish of visiting a Bollywood movie set. 

Unfortunately, all the combined energy in the world (with Max, Wilder, Reynolds, and even Brantley joining in) couldn’t make the boy well enough to travel to India, so they decided to throw him a Bollywood sequence of his own right there in the hospital. Not only did it give the boy something to celebrate, but the doctors jumped in to participate and join in the fun as well. 

Max had a lingering look at Dr. Wilder in the final moments after she tried to get him to dance, which suggests that maybe she could help him with what Ryan Eggold described as Max’s “healing.” The Bollywood number was a cathartic way to end the premiere and set up that the final season won’t be thirteen episodes of mourning the Sharpwin relationship. David Schulner shared that this particular storyline was originally planned for years ago, saying:

Apparently, the beginning of the fifth and final season was finally when the time was right for New Amsterdam to go full Bollywood! Even though finding joy was more of a theme for the fourth season, the dance number was intended to be a sign that celebration and fun can still happen despite the huge shakeup. Ryan Eggold, who directed “TBD” as well as starred, shared his own perspective on the ending:

Eggold made sure to credit the choreographer who brought that “life” to the Season 5 premiere, when Max seemed like he needed a jolt of happiness to his system. Although he didn’t join in the dancing himself, it was clear that seeing all the joy was doing him a lot of good after how all of his friends were there for him in the beginning of the episode. The actor/director elaborated on what made this a “touching” story, saying:

“Catharsis” was actually the perfect word for how New Amsterdam wrapped its first episode of Season 5, as it followed Max’s realization that he made a mistake in trying to fix everything for Helen. When I asked if learning not to try to fix things for everybody else is a lesson that Max “How Can I Help?" Goodwin can learn, Eggold responded:

The only bad news is that Max only has twelve episodes left to learn whatever lessons are necessary, as Season 5 only received an order for 13 episodes. Still, the Season 5 premiere set up what could be a joyous and celebratory season, which bodes well for finishing the stories of these characters.

New Amsterdam will soon return to NBC for its fifth and final season, but the lineup is going to look very different due to the absence of Helen Sharpe. Actress Freema Agyeman has left the series following the heartbreaking end of Season 4, which presumably means the end of Max and Helen’s relationship. Executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton spoke with CinemaBlend about clues that fans may have missed about Helen’s decision, as well as the heartache on the way when it comes to Sharpwin. 

Freema Agyeman has been a key part of New Amsterdam (and Max’s life) going back to the beginning of the series, and the Season 4 finale that featured Helen breaking off their wedding didn’t actually establish that she wouldn’t be coming back at all. (You can revisit the finale streaming with a Peacock subscription.) When I spoke with the executive producers ahead of the Season 5 premiere, they addressed how early they found out that Agyeman wouldn’t be back so that they could plan ahead for Season 5. David Schulner said:

Fans actually lucked out in Freema Agyeman staying on for Season 4, which provided a season of showing Max and Helen finally in a relationship together after years of will they/won’t they tension and a big kiss in the Season 3 finale. Plus, the New Amsterdam team dropped some clues into Season 4 to guarantee that Helen’s absence in Season 5 could make sense. 

Considering that there were obvious clues along the way that Helen wasn’t as caught up in the idea of getting married ASAP as Max was, it makes sense that there were hints that fans might have missed that Helen wouldn’t return to New Amsterdam. She had some struggles with her mother and her life back in London, and it’s probably safe to say that their separation after Max returned to New York didn’t help matters, although only time (and the upcoming Season 5 finale) will tell for sure. 

While there were hints along the way, however, there was the hope that Freema Agyeman would return for Season 5, as EP Peter Horton said:

Of course, the news that Season 5 would be the last came back in March, which was several months after the fourth season premiered. They didn’t know early on that the series finale was on the way in the next TV season, so it should be interesting to see how New Amsterdam moves Max forward with only 13 episodes left. The good news is that most of the cast will be back! 

So, was there a goal of bringing Sharpwin together as a reward for fans who had been rooting for them for so long, before having to say goodbye to Helen? David Schulner shared:

It wouldn’t be a TV show if everything went perfectly for a whole season! When I noted that it was going well enough for a while there before the cracks started to show and Helen made that fateful phone call to Max in the finale, Schulner responded: 

It’s not clear just yet if fans should give up hope of ever seeing or hearing from Helen again before the end of the fifth and final season, but the upcoming Season 5 premiere should yield some answers. Tune in to NBC for the return of New Amsterdam on Tuesday, September 20 at 10 p.m. ET.

New Amsterdam returned from its spring break with a pair of episodes that not only ended on huge cliffhangers, but also delivered massive twists for the core characters to deal with as Season 4 continues. For Helen, that means recovery from her stroke, so soon after Max proposed. Iggy’s marriage is on the rocks as a consequence of his too-close-for-comfort relationship with Trevor, and Dr. Castries nearly froze. As for Reynolds and Bloom… well, based on what executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton had to say, their lives aren’t exactly about to get easier. Let’s start with Reynolds!

After spending most of the season (which you can revisit with a Peacock subscription) struggling with Dr. Malvo’s pregnancy, Reynolds got the news that he is indeed the biological father of her child. His joy was short-lived, as he then got the news that Malvo and her husband were planning to move away from New York. Reynolds ultimately decided that even though he was determined not to abandon his child the same way that his own father abandoned him, having Malvo and Baptiste as parents wouldn’t be abandoning. He’ll be in the child’s life when the time is right, but that time is not now. 

When the executive producers spoke with CinemaBlend about New Amsterdam’s return from its break, they shared why the show led Reynolds to make that monumental decision when he was looking forward to becoming a father. David Schulner explained:

New Amsterdam still has Season 4 to finish, not to mention a full Season 5 before the series finale! No character can get everything that they want at this point (if ever), so for Reynolds this means facing his own father issues after deciding to give up a relationship with his own biological child for the foreseeable future. 

It clearly wasn’t a decision that the character was happy about, but he did it with the best of intentions, and it may be the best call possible out of a bad situation. Peter Horton weighed in on how this storyline can give Reynolds some insight into his own father, saying: 

Even though this wasn’t the most cheerful of twists for Reynolds (who actor Jocko Sims has said would “be a great father”), it does help open the door for some more insight into the character and why he is the way that he is. Up to this point, New Amsterdam has focused more on his relationship with his mother; now, viewers know more about his dad.

Reynolds definitely isn’t the only character whose future could be pretty complicated after the events of the last couple of episodes. Bloom desperately wanted a second chance with Leyla, but got the awful news that her ex-girlfriend is facing deportation back to Pakistan unless a lawyer is able to find a way out. The problem was that the lawyer required a $10,000 retainer and $10,000 per month afterwards, and Leyla had to go to Bloom to ask for the money.

Initially, Bloom had her reservations, because their relationship would be transactional if she gives Leyla the money, which was part of the problem that led to their breakup in the first place. The former ED doctor decided to give her the money anyway, which bodes well for Leyla hopefully getting to stay at the hospital, but not particularly well for any kind of normal relationship between them. Executive producer David Schulner previewed what the future looks like for them:

Find out what happens next on New Amsterdam with new episodes on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. On top of all the new issues that the characters will have to deal with after the doomed karaoke night, they’re still facing the problem of Veronica Fuentes running the hospital. Max has a plan to oust her, but he’s undoubtedly going to be concerned about helping Helen as well, and some of the others might have more than getting rid of her on their minds as well. Iggy certainly has some amends to try and make in his marriage, for one!

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD for Episode 17 of New Amsterdam Season 4, called “Unfinished Business.”

For any fans who thought that New Amsterdam would tie off all the cliffhanger stories from the spring premiere in the span of one episode, “Unfinished Business” proved that there are definitely lasting consequences to the karaoke night out. Although there were multiple near-death experiences, Helen had the worst reaction to the drugs. She recovered long enough for Max to propose, but was experiencing another health crisis at the very end of the episode. Executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton confirmed what exactly happened to her, what it means for her moving forward, and previewed how worried fans should be. 

Helen’s reaction to the drugs involved complication after complication, and surgery after surgery, with possible stroke if she didn’t agree to a hysterectomy among other procedures. She refused to have the hysterectomy because she imagined a future with Max involving siblings for Luna, and all seemed well with Max rushing off to get the ring and make their engagement official before it all fell apart. Speaking with CinemaBlend about “Unfinished Business,” David Schulner confirmed that Helen “has suffered a massive stroke” right after things were going so well, and it’s not something that she can just bounce back from. Peter Horton elaborated:

For this brilliant doctor who has saved lives over and over and over again during the course of her career, the loss of her ability to speak and form words sounds like a nightmare, not to mention coming so shortly after getting engaged and talking about expanding her family with Max. He looked like he was being traumatized all over again at the end of “Unfinished Business,” so there’s also the question of how he’ll be able to handle Helen's new status quo in what remains of the 2021-2022 TV season. Is love truly going to be enough for them to go back to what they were? 

Well, fans will just have to wait, hope, and see on that front, but it seems clear that this isn’t a storyline that will be wrapped up in the immediate future. When I asked the executive producers how worried viewers should be about Helen after her stroke at the end of “Unfinished Business,” Peter Horton shared: 

The good news is at least that Helen has survived the drugs and her reaction while they were still in her system, and it’s safe to say that Max isn’t going to abandon her in her time of need. Plus, David Schulner and Peter Horton confirmed that the other four people who were drugged – Dr. Castries (despite her cold cliffhanger), Dr. Wilder, Trevor, and Casey (who was finally discovered by Bloom and Leyla after their important conversation) – are out of the woods as of the end of “Unfinished Business.” That’s not to say that there won’t be consequences, as Martin is finally aware of Iggy and Trevor’s situation.

Tune in to NBC on Tuesday, May 3 for the next new episode of New Amsterdam to reveal the aftermath of Helen’s stroke in Season 4. Not too many weeks are left before the fourth season finale in May, so be sure not to miss an episode!

New Amsterdam fans had to wait almost two months between new episodes in Season 4, but the show didn’t hold back in delivering some jaw-dropping twists in the spring premiere. The episode ended on cliffhangers for no fewer than five characters, and was the first half of a two-parter. The medical drama isn’t known for two-parters, and executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton opened up to CinemaBlend about why they were able to go bigger than ever with the story in Season 4. 

The first half of the two-parter (available streaming on Peacock) turned a night of drunken karaoke into a crisis that has left at least one character collapsed on the floor, and the other four with their fates unknown. The EPs already explained the trauma that Max is in for with Helen’s state, and the “insane” process behind Dr. Castries’ cold cliffhanger indicates that she’s not doing so well either. Things also weren’t looking great for Casey, Dr. Wilder, and Trevor. 

When I spoke with the producers about the goals and challenges of the two-parter, David Schulner explained why they can figuratively “blow things up” in ways that they couldn’t before: 

New Amsterdam may not be too likely to actually blow things up – although who knows after how the show ended its spring premiere? The episode certainly blew up what seemed like a fun night out and potentially the status quo at the hospital for the foreseeable future, depending on whether all five victims recover from what happened to them after karaoke. Even after Season 3 covered how the hospital handled the worst of the COVID pandemic, it wasn’t until Season 4 that fans really got to see the show embrace some “jazz” and this kind of two-parter. 

The original plan for the spring premiere had to change, so this two-parter was intended to air very differently on NBC. Instead of being split by the break, both halves ultimately followed Renée Zellweger’s The Thing About Pam limited series. Peter Horton explained how airing the two-parter without a break of weeks between episodes turned out to be “a lot of fun,” saying:

The two-parter may be fun for viewers to watch from home, but certainly hasn’t been much fun for the characters following the karaoke night! Unless, of course, Bloom wearing the taco hat for most of a work day counts for her coworkers, and that was a nice light plot point in an episode featuring some pretty foreboding developments. Even aside from whatever happened to those five characters, Iggy seemed on the verge of making a very bad decision when it comes to Trevor. At least Max had his proposal to look forward to! Hopefully he’ll still be able to pop the question to Helen. 

Find out with the next new episode of New Amsterdam on Tuesday, April 26 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC as the second half of the two-part event. The characters may be less likely to let loose again moving forward after the karaoke night backfired, and fans can only imagine at this point what Veronica will make of the situation when she returns to New York. Luckily, there are still several weeks of new episodes before the Season 4 finale in May!

New Amsterdam is officially back after nearly two months off the air, and “All Night Long” delivered the kinds of twists that might keep fans up all night long as well. A night of fun, karaoke, and revelry took some very dark turns for several of the characters, and the episode ended on a cliffhanger with the lives of no fewer than five in the balance. For Max, this means facing the prospect of a medical crisis for another woman he deeply loves, after the death of his wife in early Season 2. Executive producers Peter Horton and David Schulner broke down what happened and what’s ahead for the medical drama.

The structure of “All Night Long” meant the same night playing out from different characters’ perspectives over and over again, and some had a better night than others. The morning after was pretty bad for everybody, ranging from hangovers to Bloom wearing a taco hat to a handful who were missing and not answering their calls.

The episode ended with the reveal of Helen passed out on the floor of the apartment, and big questions about what’s ahead for her and the others still unaccounted for. When the executive producers spoke with CinemaBlend about “All Night Long,” Peter Horton shared how Max will handle Helen’s health crisis after losing Georgia not that long ago: 

Poor Max is facing the possibility of losing Helen just after he was finally preparing to propose to her, which honestly seems like it would be enough for PTSD even if he hadn’t already gone through his heartbreak with Georgia’s death. And Helen's isn’t the only life in the balance, as Casey, Trevor, Dr. Castries, and Dr. Wilder are all presumably in the same situation. 

Considering that “All Night Long” was originally intended to air back in February, maybe fans should be glad for the delay that means just a week of waiting for what happens next instead of two months. Dr. Reynolds made the point that they were all in the same bar the night before, so something must have happened that just those five were missing. 

Since all the characters were in the same place but not necessarily all drinking the same drinks – Iggy certainly seemed to be sticking to bad champagne and potentially worse decisions – it seems like they could have either been drugged or drank something that had gone bad. 

This episode did feature the debut of Adam Rose as a surly bartender. Executive producer David Schulner didn’t spoil the resolution to the mystery of what happened to the five characters, but did promise that the reveal will come soon:

Well, that doesn’t sound good for Helen and the others, but if anybody can solve the mystery of what’s wrong with them and save their lives, it would surely be the doctors at New Amsterdam. Then again, they’re under an unusual amount of stress with people close to them in danger, and according to the EPs, those people won’t all be suffering in exactly the same way. 

When I asked if there was any one of the five who fans should be particularly worried about or is worse off than the others, Peter Horton shared that “they’re all pretty bad,” and David Schulner elaborated: 

Even though things are looking pretty dark for the characters of New Amsterdam, fans at least have the good news that the show isn’t heading into another break, and the finale in the 2022 TV schedule doesn’t air until May 24. The next new episode that will reveal some answers about who targeted the characters debuts on Tuesday, April 26 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. 

At this point, the threat of Veronica Fuentes seems very distant, and all seems to be forgiven with Reynolds betraying the others after his big gesture to make amends, but there is still plenty to wonder about over the next week. 

Nearly two months have passed since New Amsterdam aired its last new episode, with Renée Zellweger’s The Thing About Pam taking over the time slot starting in March. The medical drama is finally returning with an episode that will involve karaoke, drinking, and consequences along with the medical cases of the week, but the executive producers have shared with CinemaBlend that the plan for the spring premiere had to change. Plus, there are some exciting reveals along the way, including which members of the cast can sing! 

The most recent episode of New Amsterdam ahead of “All Night Long” on April 19 aired all the way back in February, and it ended on a fairly hopeful note with Max figuring out a plan to take down Veronica Fuentes with some unexpected help from Reynolds, and it even delivered some backstory on Veronica to explain why she is the way that she is. It didn’t close on a cliffhanger, however, and executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton explained how the story was supposed to be different. 

When I asked the New Amsterdam executive producers about whether or not the show has a time jump to correspond to the nearly two months of a break, David Schulner shared that there’s “not really” one for the spring premiere, and Peter Horton elaborated:

The original plan for the spring premiere wasn’t for “All Night Long” as Episode 16 on April 19, but rather for Episode 17 to air. If the schedule had gone according to plan, then fans would have seen New Amsterdam’s karaoke night (which director Nestor Carbonell promised will show characters “letting loose” with different sides) weeks ago, before The Thing About Pam premiered. 

Fortunately, fans will finally get to watch the episode that was planned to air before the weeks of break, and all signs point toward a story that will deliver interesting developments for most of the major characters. Whether or not that’s a good thing for an episode that will force these characters to deal with the consequences of their actions remains to be seen, but there is at least one thing that is pretty much guaranteed to be 100% fun, as EP Peter Horton previewed:

The cast of New Amsterdam is comprised of talented actors, but does that mean they’re all talented singers? Apparently not, but that’s realistic. After all, the point of karaoke is to have fun rather than belt Grammy-worthy performances, and it sounds like the characters will be having some fun during the night out. David Schulner elaborated on what the karaoke night will bring in “All Night Long”: 

The karaoke night will include the newer characters as well as the longtime major characters, which may not be good for Iggy and Martin’s marriage, if Trevor is feeling flirty! Dr. Castries seemed to gain some respect from the other doctors after she didn’t betray them to Fuentes (with Reynolds as the guilty party), and Dr. Wilder’s role as the new Max in his absence meant that she fit right in. But how will they blend in with drinking and revelry at karaoke night? 

And will Casey and Bloom “figure their shit out,” as David Schulner suggested? His firing wasn’t her fault, but their friendship fractured over Bloom’s decisions regarding Leyla. It may take more than a duet for Bloom to mend that fence, but who knows? Anything can happen at karaoke night, as Peter Horton noted:

The doctors of New Amsterdam have earned a night to let their hair down after trying to still do their jobs to the best of their abilities despite Dr. Fuentes’ interference, and I think it’s probably safe to say that Fuentes was not invited out for some karaoke. Fans can finally find out – and see the episode that was not originally intended to be the spring premiere – with “All Night Long” on Tuesday, April 19 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC in the 2022 TV schedule.

There aren’t too many episodes left of New Amsterdam Season 4, as the finale airs on May 24, so be sure to tune in. The medical drama has already been renewed for Season 5, although the fifth season will also be the last for Max and Co, so the stakes are high as Season 4 winds down. 

New Amsterdam pulled out all the stops to wrap the first half of Season 4 by delivering not just one cliffhanger, but multiple for several different characters! The biggest twist is undoubtedly Max deciding to leave for London and leaving the hospital in the hands of Dr. Fuentes after her takeover. It was a happy ending to 2021 for Max and Helen, but not so happy for everybody they left behind. Fortunately, showrunner David Schulner and star Jocko Sims spoke with CinemaBlend to preview what’s in store with Season 4 in 2022. 

The show will return on January 4 with an episode called “Talkin’ Bout a Revolution,” and will see Helen and Max settling into life in London much more happily than the doctors trying to settle into the new status quo under Dr. Fuentes. Her takeover will have some disastrous results, while Iggy works on finding employment for his psych patients, Bloom helps out a patient who believes he’s dealing with a curse, and almost certainly some fresh drama with Reynolds/Malvo/Baptiste triangle after the midseason finale baby bombshell.

Dr. Fuentes Has No Rival After Taking Over

Dr. Fuentes managed to clear a path to take power at New Amsterdam by making promises and winning votes from the board, and Max’s absence means that she’s unopposed in a way that she wasn’t before. Speaking with CinemaBlend, showrunner David Schulner revealed that for the second half of Season 4, she “has remade the whole hospital in her image. And our characters are suffering the worst of it, no doubt.” Unsurprisingly, she will use her position at the top of the power structure to run the hospital about as differently from Max “How Can I Help?” Goodwin. Schulner shed more light, saying: 

Fuentes began her process of running New Amsterdam like a corporation early in Season 4… as much as she could while Max was still around, at least, and he could only go so far in stopping her. Her arrival already resulted in the firings of Casey, Gladys, Agnes, and Baptiste, and it’s clear that her reign of terror has only just began. Jocko Sims weighed in on what the hospital looks like after she is able to run the hospital without opposition like Max or even Brantley: 

Of course, none of this is to say that the hospital and characters will be unrecognizable when Season 4 picks back up. In fact, Jocko Sims previewed that it’ll be back to “business as usual,” but that doesn’t mean they’ll be happy to have Fuentes filling Max’s old role. The actor said: 

Successful or not, the doctors who Max left behind at least considering an idea for a coup is a sign that they’re not beaten just yet. And in fact, the showrunner has revealed that there is a “spark of resistance” with the arrival of Dr. Wilder, played by Sandra Mae Frank and on board at New Amsterdam to fill Helen’s former spot as head of oncology. According to David Schulner, Wilder will “carry on Max's tradition as best she can.” Since she already made a good impression on the other doctors when she went the extra mile to save Guillaume, fans can probably look forward to what she brings in 2022!

Max And Helen Are Building A New Life Together

While the doctors back in New York may be suffering and struggling under Dr. Fuentes, Max and Helen are starting their new life together in London. They made the big move not too long after officially starting their relationship, and there were doubts up until the very last moments of the midseason finale as to whether or not he would actually go. Max passed what David Schulner described as the “final test” of leaving New York out of his love for her, but they’re not free of challenges just yet. The showrunner said: 

The promo for the midseason premiere indicates that they’re enjoying quite the honeymoon period in London; with challenges on the way, will that last? The show clearly isn’t going to send Max back to New York by the end of the first episode of 2022, with this plan to juxtapose London with New Amsterdam. Whatever happens, hopefully Max and Helen just aren’t as miserable as seems likely for the friends they left behind!

Dr. Malvo Is Pregnant, But Who Is The Father?

Reynolds had his mind blown in the midseason when he learned just how much he’d volunteered for when he said he was up for “complicated.” Malvo is pregnant, which presents a whole slew of complications considering the polyamorous relationship. Either Reynolds or Baptiste is the father, but who? According to Jocko Sims, that question will be weighing heavily on both of their minds, and that may not be the best case scenario for Malvo. He said: 

Sims also shared that he thinks Reynolds would be a great father and has “always wanted Reynolds to have kids,” but only time will tell if this is how it happens. Even if Baptiste is the father, Reynolds does truly love Malvo. Based on some comments from David Schulner, the course of love probably isn’t going to start running smoothly for Reynolds, whether or not he’s the father. He shared: 

Well, Reynolds is going to open his mind even more in the second half of Season 4, depending on what Malvo wants for her pregnancy! His life is clearly going to be complicated on the personal and professional fronts, and he’s not the only one. 

Bloom Misses Leyla, But What About Leyla?

Bloom crossed a line when it came to her relationship with Leyla back at the end of Season 3 when she more or less bribed the hospital to open up a fifth residency slot for her girlfriend in the ED, and it was only a matter of time before Leyla found out. She learned the truth when Reynolds accidentally tipped her off, and broke things off with Bloom in the midseason finale. The showrunner shared that he and the writers “hope” that their relationship can come back from this very low point, but there are some hurdles in the way. David Schulner broke it down:

Fans shouldn’t count on this story getting resolution right at the beginning of 2022, either. According to the showrunner, Leyla isn’t sticking around in the aftermath of what she views as Bloom’s big betrayal:

So, no surgical residency with Leyla and Reynolds, despite Reynolds extending the invitation in the same conversation in which he accidentally tipped Leyla off! Jocko Sims is of the opinion that Reynolds isn’t to blame for Leyla finding out – after all, Reynolds himself doesn’t know – and he’ll end up as part of the storyline. The actor previewed:

Leyla might be going MIA on Bloom, but evidently hasn’t entirely cut off contact with the doctors of New Amsterdam! A big question now is how much actress Shiva Kalaiselvan will appear in the rest of Season 4. 

Iggy May Have Made A Mistake

Iggy has struggled to get by without Gladys on hand as his head nurse, and his choice of who to hire to replace her may turn out to be a big mistake. The new hire actually made a pass at Iggy during the interview, and Iggy was very flattered. By the end of the midseason finale, Iggy made the decision to hire him, which might not turn out to be the best idea. David Schulner teased:

Relationships rarely go too smoothly for too long on New Amsterdam, so maybe Iggy and Martin will be the next couple to hit some bumps in the road! Fortunately, the wait to find out what happens next for him and all the others is nearly over. New Amsterdam returns for the second half of Season 4 on Tuesday, January 4 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, following the highly-anticipated return of This Is Us for its sixth and final season. NBC medical drama New Amsterdam is almost back after its winter hiatus, and there will be a lot to unpack when the show returns following the midseason finale. The series’ final episode of 2021 saw Max and Sharpe finally leaving New York to start their new lives in London, but it won’t be without some challenges, as showrunner David Schulner recently previewed a different side of Max.

Max and Sharpe’s London adventure will be a very new chapter of his life for Max when it comes to figuring out how to keep doing what he does best in London. While Helen knows exactly what she’s doing, Max is the complete opposite. David Schulner told TVLine how the former hospital director will be coping with his new role:

Max trying to find his footing in Season 4 could be similar to Max in Season 1 all over again, as he navigated becoming the medical director at New Amsterdam. I don’t expect Max to take very long to find his footing, considering he is a natural when it comes to helping people, and he'll presumably have the support of Sharpe in their new life together. 

The couple did move awfully fast in their relationship, since most people don’t choose to move across the world not long after finally getting together. Seeing how Max, Sharpe, and Luna deal with new challenges will also be another storyline to look out for when New Amsterdam returns, David Schulner previewed:

While fans had basically been waiting for Sharpwin to get together since the start of the series, their sudden move to London was a bit of a shock. The first half of Season 4 saw the two of them prepare their goodbyes and get ready to move, while the second half will start by putting focus on this new life they have together. Seeing this new side to both of them as characters and in their relationship should be a contrast to what's happening back in New York, with the friends they left behind struggling under the leadership of Dr. Fuentes. 

When New Amsterdam returns in the new year, there will be a lot of challenges to overcome, not just in London but back at the hospital as well. Fans will be in for a ride and I cannot wait to see what happens and how the show will showcase these seemingly separate storylines in London and back at New Amsterdam!

The first half of New Amsterdam's fourth season ended in 2021 with an episode that shook up just about every character in some way or other, and some of them won’t even be around in New York to witness the fallout. With Max and Helen off to start a new life together in London, Leyla confronted Bloom about the bribe, Malvo dropped the baby bombshell on Reynolds, and Iggy made what may turn out to be a very ill-advised decision about his new head nurse. Luckily, showrunner David Schulner spoke with CinemaBlend about what happens next for the relationships after the fall finale. 

Fans are in for a bit of a wait until the winter premiere in 2022, so read on to get a taste of what’s next for characters and their relationships! 

Are Bloom And Leyla Done For Good?

Bloom planted the seeds of her own heartbreak back in the Season 3 finale when she paid a big bribe – or, as she puts it, made a “donation” – to the hospital to get her girlfriend a fifth slot as an ED resident, and the latest episode finally revealed the sum as $90,000. Leyla was horrified at what Bloom had done and kept from her, and their emotional confrontation seemed like it had to be the end of their relationship. But is there any coming back from it for them? David Schulner weighed in:

So, fans of the Bloom/Leyla relationship shouldn’t give up all hope about the relationship, but it sounds like the fallout is going to have to be ugly if they have a chance together. Bloom not only crossed a line, but proceeded to lie about it for months until Leyla accidentally found out from Reynolds, who unknowingly tipped her off when trying to compliment her and recruit her to surgery. 

There’s hope for Bloom and Leyla, but probably not for any forward progress in the early episodes back in 2022. When I asked if Leyla pursuing a future in surgery with Reynolds (and away from Bloom’s ED) was a possibility, the showrunner shared:

Just when things seemed to be going so well for Leyla, she now wants to leave the hospital simply because she’s so hurt by what Bloom did. That’s not to say that she’ll be completely gone, though. When I spoke to actor Jocko Sims, he previewed that Leyla is going to reach out to Reynolds “for some reason” and he'll “get kind of caught in the middle” in future episodes of Season 4. And there’s going to be a “great Reynolds/Bloom moment” because of it. As if Reynolds isn’t going to have enough on his plate with Malvo’s situation! 

Iggy Made A Questionable Decision

Iggy may be facing some relationship complications of his own, although the potential problems that he could run into and/or cause with Martin aren’t guaranteed just yet. But he made what may turn out to be a pretty bad call in the fall finale when it comes to who he hired as his new head nurse: Trevor, who is definitely not Gladys 2.0. Trevor flirted pretty openly with Iggy while interviewing for the position, which was quite the bold move on his part and flattered Iggy enough that he was repeating the compliment to anybody who would listen. And Trevor ultimately got the job.

That’s not to say that Iggy hired Trevor because he wanted to have Trevor around at work all the time when Martin wasn’t present, and he clearly only has eyes for Martin… but that doesn’t mean this isn’t going to backfire on him. When I asked David Schulner about what’s next for Iggy after getting a punch in the face in the fall finale, he previewed:

He started seeing patients again only to get hit in the face, then hired the best candidate he could despite that candidate making a pretty unprofessional pass at him. Veronica’s budget cuts are technically the root of the problem, so who knows? Maybe the end game will be Gladys returning and the psych department going back to business as usual by the Season 4 finale. 

Reynolds And Malvo's Relationship Got Even More Complicated

Reynolds may have really tempted fate in the fall finale when he told Malvo that he’s “up for complicated,” because he clearly was not considering the possibility of her revealing that she’s pregnant. New Amsterdam found a way to make its most complicated relationship even more complicated, as the polyamorous trio now has a pregnancy to deal with. Jocko Sims already confirmed that Reynolds and Baptiste are going to be “very interested to know who the father is,” and some repercussions are on the way.

As for how long the pregnancy twist has been in the works, David Schulner broke down the Reynolds/Malvo journey from her debut in Season 3 through to her pregnancy in Season 4: 

Season 3 may just be too early in a hit TV show’s run for any couple to have a happily-ever-after, so now Reynolds is one part of a polyamorous relationship involving his former boss and his colleague who may or may not be pregnant with his child! Interestingly, the timing of the storyline matched up with some of the marriage reveals from and about Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. 

The New Amsterdam situation is about as different as can be when it comes to the circumstances, and this story may not be easy for Reynolds in the rest of Season 4. When I asked how the pregnancy reveal will shake things up for the characters, David Schulner said: 

Well, depending on the paternity of Malvo’s pregnancy and how she wants to proceed, Reynolds may need to have more of an open mind than ever before! Falling in love with her definitely resulted in him bending his own rules, but this is something very new, and the aftermath should be intriguing to witness. 

The only bad news is that the fallout of all of these relationship game-changers won’t happen any time too soon. New Amsterdam has entered into its winter hiatus, and won’t be back to kick off the second half of Season 4 until Tuesday, January 4 in its normal time slot at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. For now, though, you can always revisit New Amsterdam days gone by with the full series so far streaming on Peacock.

The fourth season of New Amsterdam hit its midpoint with a superbug ravaging the hospital, and Max and Helen put their travel plans on hold to pitch in to trace the source and find a cure. Max was clearly having some trouble saying goodbye, especially in light of managing the crisis while Veronica Fuentes wasn’t even in New York. He ultimately ran out of time and had to decide: would he stay at New Amsterdam or go build a new life in London with Helen? And what of Fuentes after her move against Max? Well, he made his call, and showrunner David Schulner spoke with CinemaBlend about what happened with Sharpwin and more in the midseason finale, plus what happens next. 

Even though it’s probably safe to say that the New Amsterdam team wouldn’t have found the way to defeat the superbug in time to save Walsh and others if Max wasn’t around, and even though Reynolds spelled it out for Max that everybody wanted him to stay, he chose love over obligation and is heading to London to start fresh with Helen. When I spoke with showrunner David Schulner about the midseason finale and what’s on the way in the new year, I noted that a lot of fans never really expected Max to go, and he responded:

New Amsterdam threw just about every hurdle in the way of Max and Helen happily heading off to London together, but he got in the cab with Helen rather than staying behind. It did seem like he was fighting a losing battle against Fuentes, and his feelings for Helen were so strong as soon as they made the jump to romance that he barely even hesitated in wanting to go to London with her. The show had to build their relationship strongly enough in the first half of the season for it to make sense that Max of all people would walk away from the hospital, and David Schulner explained the approach:

As sad Sharpwin leaving may be for the characters who were left behind at New Amsterdam with the prospect of Fuentes continuing to make changes, good for Max and Helen for choosing love and joy! They deserve it after what they went through in Season 3, and romance was really just an evolution in their dynamic. They didn’t have to get to know each other, so they aced every test and cleared every hurdle. Considering what may have been a Bloom/Leyla breakup and the pregnancy bombshell in the Reynolds/Malvo/Baptiste relationship, it’s good that at least one romance is on solid ground!

But while they were able to manage every obstacle together while in New York, how will they fare in London? David Schulner previewed the challenges that are on the way for both Max and Helen, as well as how those challenges will compare to what’s happening back at New Amsterdam:

A “joyous” experience is certainly good news for Sharpwin, even though it sounds like there’s no shortage of complications in store for them. Helen’s relationship with her mom was challenging even before she moved back across the Atlantic, complete with a man and his young daughter in tow, so it’s not hard to imagine that she’ll have a lot to deal with on that front. 

As for Max, he’ll be in an entirely new place with his daughter who might have her own adjustments to make. At least it sounds better than what Reynolds, Bloom, and Iggy are facing with Fuentes remaking New Amsterdam in her own image! When I mentioned to David Schulner that actress Michelle Forbes has been so good at being bad, he responded:

Members of the cast, crew, and now showrunner have had nothing but good things to say about Michelle Forbes, so she really is nailing her performance as a character who is so widely disliked. At the same time, Fuentes actually has had good points about changing some of Max’s policies from a financial perspective, to the point that the board voted to keep her in charge despite some controversial decisions. David Schulner shared how Fuentes will be running the hospital once she no longer has Max getting in her way: 

Fuentes’ methods of running the hospital sound just about as different from how Max “How Can I Help?” Goodwin approached things as possible. The relocation from New York to London will serve a larger purpose for the story, even beyond advancing the Sharpwin relationship and leaving New Amsterdam in Fuentes’ hands. With two key characters in the United Kingdom, the series can show off the differences between healthcare systems. And it certainly sounds like the American healthcare system isn’t going to look great in the comparison! As for how the characters who remained at New Amsterdam will deal with this new era under Veronica Fuentes, the showrunner explained:

Max is gone, but his legacy will live on in the form of Dr. Wilder, played by Sandra Mae Frank and brought on board to replace Helen as the head of oncology. She was a hit with the other doctors when she came on board to pull off a miracle surgery, and clearly wasn’t Veronica Fuentes 2.0, so it should be fun to see the “spark” that she brings to the hospital during what sounds like a very dark time. 

Unfortunately, fans have to wait a bit to see for themselves what happens next after the midseason finale. New Amsterdam is heading into winter hiatus until 2022, and won’t return to NBC for the midseason premiere until Tuesday, January 4 back in its 10 p.m. ET time slot. New Amsterdam is one of several NBC series not returning this fall in light of the coronavirus pandemic. The medical drama was one of many impacted when an industry-wide shutdown hit earlier this year. It ended up signing off early, leaving a gaping hole in the hearts of many viewers. The good news? When New Amsterdam returns for Season 3, it will come bearing surprising revelations for fan-favorite Helen Sharpe.

When New Amsterdam left off, Dr. Helen Sharpe had embarked on a relationship with series newcomer, Dr. Cassian Shin (played by Daniel Dae Kim). Professionally and personally speaking, Helen’s life seemed to be on an upswing of gigantic proportions. So, what are the surprising revelations that Season 3 has in store for her? New Amsterdam’s executive producer, David Schulner, told TVLine:

Now, this is an explosive tease, and it sounds as though fans have a lot to anticipate when Season 3 premieres. New Amsterdam will be venturing home with Helen Sharpe and unleashing a “family bombshell.” The only thing that viewers have already seen quasi-hinted at, heading into Season 3, from this multi-faceted tease is the “someone” sharing Helen’s bed. Dr. Cassian Shin seemed to have that lofty spot as of the finale.

Of course, things could shift on that front, following Dr. Max Goodwin’s breakup with his girlfriend. Could any New Amsterdam fan possibly forget the intense near-kiss that Helen and Max shared last season? Exactly. That is not to say that Cassian Shin will not be a huge presence for Helen in Season 3. Executive producer David Schulner had previously teased Helen’s romance with the invigorating doctor.

Daniel Dae Kim’s introductory episode ended up getting rolled into last season’s finale, and he made a strong impression. As for Helen, she will have to navigate Cassian’s tense relationship with Max as they work side by side in New Amsterdam’s titular hospital. A “loaded” dynamic between the potential romantic rivals for Helen’s heart has already been teased, so stay tuned. Romance aside, that familial revelation also sounds quite intriguing.

New Amsterdam has teased shocking reveals for Helen in the past, but this one seems to be regarding Helen’s current family rather than her desire to start her own, as Helen’s eagerness to be a mother is something the show has dealt with in the past. It sounds like there will be further drilling into Helen’s family life, and I am here for it in spades. I cannot wait! Let more fascinating Helen storylines continue.

Fans curious to learn more about Helen’s home, family, and romantic life are getting their wishes answered. Following the previous season’s finale, is the love triangle this fan clamored for happening, too? This latest tease does not seem to preclude the possibility, so that is positive. Time will tell if the same person sharing Helen’s bed at the start of the season will be the same one sharing it at the end.

New Amsterdam came to an end earlier than expected or planned last season, but not before setting up a love triangle for Season 3. Or at least, a dynamic some fans undoubtedly hope will turn into one. Now, New Amsterdam’s boss promises a “loaded” relationship when the medical drama returns.

New Amsterdam closed out its last season with Dr. Helen Sharpe entering into a relationship with Daniel Dae Kim’s new character, Dr. Cassian Shin. His approach readily clashed with Helen’s. To his massive credit, Cassian sprang into action, creating astonishing results. However, his “self-care” approach to getting there made waves between him and Helen. Suffice it say that Dr. Max Goodwin’s methods are incredibly different from Cassian’s.

Hence, that “loaded” dynamic. Yes, there will be more to the tension between Max and Cassian than the latter dating Helen. That not entirely surprising considering how drastically different their approaches are. New Amsterdam’s showrunner, David Schulner, teased that the men’s varying approaches to their jobs could lead to tension, telling TVLine:

This is interesting to hear from David Schulner for multiple reasons. That said, I do expect Max and Cassian to work things out fairly quickly. For one, as New Amsterdam’s showrunner points out, Max cannot argue with Cassian’s results. Secondly, Helen also clashed with Cassian’s technique at first, before finding her opinion soften.

Helen and Cassian met during the retooled version of the finale, which saw Cassian introduced during the opening minutes of New Amsterdam’s sendoff. The dueling doctors quickly hit turbulence. As I'd hoped, those sparks of heated conversation ignited into a romantic passion.

Thus, opening the door to Helen being the center of a love triangle between Cassian and Max. She and Max have shared an incredible amount of chemistry since New Amsterdam began. David Schulner did acknowledge that having Helen at the heart of the men’s dynamic would drive some portion of the wedge between them.

Let the love triangle and workplace conflict begin! Okay, in all seriousness, I hope that the tension between Max and Cassian does not last too long. At his core, Max has always wanted unity and peace between the doctors. So, I would hope he and Cassian find a way to work together.

Plus, let’s face it. If Max and Cassian become friends (which I hope they do), it would only add more drama to the love triangle. New Amsterdam knows what it is doing. As his debut episode showed, Cassian is an incredibly skilled doctor who thinks outside of the box. That attribute is one that Max should respect and admire.

Time will tell if New Amsterdam can arrive as one of this fall’s premieres. When it returns, new episodes of the medical drama will air Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.

New Amsterdam was one of the many shows forced to craft an unexpectedly early exit amid the coronavirus pandemic. Despite the medical drama’s sophomore season not ending with its initially planned finale, it still managed to end on a note reminiscent of one, as Dr. Helen Sharpe embarked on a new romance. Now, New Amsterdam’s creator is confirming that more romance is in store for Helen in Season 3.

When the NBC drama left off, Helen had begun to date Daniel Dae Kim’s new character, Dr. Cassian Shin, setting up the potential for Helen to be in the center of a love triangle in Season 3. Or at least, I hope so. New Amsterdam’s creator, David Schulner, teased Helen’s romance with Cassian, telling TV Guide:

As someone who was blown away by the chemistry between Cassian and Helen, I am excited to hear this from New Amsterdam’s creator. The show evidently knows that it has a marvelous coupling on its hands, and I look forward to seeing their relationship unfold in Season 3.

Upon initially meeting on New Amsterdam, Cassian and Helen clashed at first, before she grew to appreciate his approach. I'm honestly sucker for couples (with spectacular chemistry) who get together after not originally liking each other, and Helen and Cassian have it all going for them!

Is David Schulner’s mention of Max’s “way” a reference to Helen seeing him as a romantic direction? I'm not entirely clear, though what is evident is that New Amsterdam is not letting the pairing between Helen and Cassian slip through its fingers.

After having to pull the epidemic episode that New Amsterdam had planned, Daniel Dae Kim made his debut in last season’s finale. Kim’s retooled entrance gave fans a telling glimpse of the incredible chemistry between Kim’s Cassian and Freema Agyeman’s Helen. This development now puts a pairing between Max and Helen further out of reach for now.

While the noteworthy (and heart-soaring) chemistry between Max and Helen has been a talking point since New Amsterdam began, fans are still waiting for a romance to blossom. That is not to say that last season did not take a massive step towards acknowledging the romantic chemistry between the incredibly great friends. Max and Helen even almost kissed, despite his relationship with Alice.

Fast forward, and Max has broken up with Alice, but Helen has moved on with Cassian, indicating the potential beginnings of a beautiful love triangle between Cassian, Helen, and Max. Okay, so I am hoping for one – big time. While New Amsterdam’s creator is promising that fans will see Helen and Cassian becoming an item, the show could also acknowledge Max’s feelings about it in Season 3.

At least, I would imagine New Amsterdam would do that. It will have a lot going on when it returns. Helen’s romance with Cassian is compelling, so I will be in no hurry to see them break up. Of course, that's not to say I'm not torn over her and Max being endgame.

I'm just curious how long Daniel Dae Kim is going to stay on for Season 3, as he joined New Amsterdam in a recurring capacity. If he is going to romance Helen long-term, one will hope that status changes to that of a series regular.

I honestly ship Helen with both Cassian and Max at this point. Season 3 could have one of those genuine love triangles that makes the audience gets pulled in as many directions as its centerpiece (Helen) does. Thankfully, NBC’s mega-renewal (Season 3 – 5) guarantees there will be time to find out which direction Helen’s heart takes her.

New Amsterdam will return with romantic drama packed in for good measure when Season 3 premieres on NBC. A premiere date is still pending. While you wait for the medical show to return, you can indulge in this summer’s schedule.

Spoilers for the March 17 episode of New Amsterdam entitled “Liftoff” are discussed below.

Ever since Dr. Floyd Reynolds agreed to move with his fiancé Evie, fans have been left to wonder if he will actually do it. Reynolds told Max that he is departing his job at the hospital, and New Amsterdam seemed to ready his exit. In the March 17 episode, Reynolds appeared to work his last day.

It was an eventful one, too, which involved a boy’s selfie challenge going horribly awry. Thank goodness for Reynolds! By the episode’s end, Reynolds had performed what seemed to be his final surgery at the hospital, and afterward, everyone came to bid him a fond farewell. As you can tell, New Amsterdam is doing a persuasive job of making viewers think that “Liftoff” is Reynolds’ last episode, but is it?

New Amsterdam’s showrunner, David Schulner, answered that question, and his answer was a surprising one. It is also destined to spark a lot of speculation, so feel free to read it as many times as you need to. Asked if Reynolds is really leaving the show, Schulner told CinemaBlend:

Wait, what? Reynolds is leaving the hospital, but he is not leaving the show? Well, this is not the strangest plot twist. The question is what this mysterious response means for the character’s future. The show is called New Amsterdam because of its titular hospital and central setting. How will Reynolds stay on New Amsterdam if he is out of the hospital?

It is possible that the bold NBC drama could follow Reynolds’ story as he works at another hospital, which makes me wonder. This is just personal speculation, but could this also be the beginnings of a New Amsterdam spinoff starring Jocko Sims’ Reynolds? It would not be surprising. Reynolds could unquestionably anchor his own show. Following New Amsterdam’s mega three-season renewal, the subject was broached with NBC brass.

Back in January, Deadline reported that while there was a lot of openness to the potential of a New Amsterdam spinoff, no conversations were happening. Could that have changed now that we are in March? May is not too far away, and that time is typically used to determine the fate of series at varying stages of devlopment. Could a Reynolds-led spinoff get the go-ahead?

It would be interesting if Reynolds were leaving New Amsterdam to set up his own show. Or, he could just be there for a while and come back. It is tough to imagine things not working out between Reynolds and Evie. They are in love, and Reynolds is clearly devoted to her. Maybe something brings them back for good?

He is making the sacrifice of giving up his job for her. Much like Severide leaving his post on Chicago Fire, I expect Reynolds to eventually return to the hospital that gives the show its name. Not having Reynolds as part of the main story that drives New Amsterdam’s hospital is tough to imagine.

New Amsterdam has undoubtedly opened the door to something definitely worth speculating about, as Season 2 continues. While Reynolds will be away from the hospital, there will be a new doctor coming on board in a different capacity. Hawaii Five-0’s Daniel Dae Kim will arrive as Dr. Cassian Shin – the new head trauma surgeon.

While Max is currently dating Alice, a fellow single parent (who, like Max, is raising her daughter alone since her spouse’s death), fans have been wanting to know where his relationship really stands with Dr. Helen Sharpe. As of the March 10 episode of New Amsterdam, though, we got a tease of a significant Max and Helen moment that still just did not quite happen...Because the good friends were on the verge of kissing! Now, we have a better understanding of why they didn't go all the way there.

Max’s wife and his daughter’s mother, Georgia, died in the Season 2 premiere, with the crash that eventually killed her occurring in the previous season’s finale and left viewers in suspense as to its deadly outcome. Georgia’s death and a three-month time-jump were revealed in the premiere, and Max has struggled mightily with his grief. Then, he met Alice and sparks sort of flew, meaning that Max is embarking on his first post-Georgia relationship on New Amsterdam.

But, Max and Helen’s intense chemistry almost culminated in a kiss during a conversation they shared in “Perspectives.” At first, the almost-kiss seemed like it could be my wishful imagination. Was it? New Amsterdam’s showrunner, David Schulner, told me:

After the Season 2 premiere, New Amsterdam’s showrunner warned that the drama would be exploring Max and Helen’s friendship. Max and Helen almost kissing certainly puts their relationship in a place where it could potentially reach beyond the platonic. However, Max is still processing his grief while balancing a budding relationship with Alice, and his very apparent feelings for Helen.

New Amsterdam’s showrunner confirming that the kiss did almost happen is pretty huge. The thing, though, is that Alice is also very likable, leading to a very messy triangle. Or, should I say, quadrangle, since Georgia is understandably still a massive part of Max’s personal equation? What kept Max from getting entirely swept up into the moment with Helen? David Schulner answered, saying:

I have to give major credit (as always) to New Amsterdam because the show has created a likable character in Alice. It makes sense that Max would find her appealing, especially since they share something so personal and tragic in common. When it came to what held Max back from kissing Helen, it sounds like it was a combination of Max’s new feelings for Alice and his continued love of Georgia.

Is there another reason that Max is gravitating towards this relationship with Alice in the first place? I asked New Amsterdam’s showrunner if there is any part of Max that is jumping into this relationship with Alice as a way to put a barrier between him and Helen, because he knows he relies on their friendship so much already? David Schulner responded, saying:

Time will tell if Max and Helen eventually find a way to be together, as the question of where the simmering chemistry between Helen and Max will ultimately lead is a substantial one. New Amsterdam has set up quite the will-they or won’t-they dynamic!

On that note, a new doctor is set to join New Amsterdam this season. Hawaii Five-0 vet Daniel Dae Kim will play the new head trauma surgeon, Dr. Cassian Shin. Cassian is set to interact quite a bit with Dr. Helen Sharpe, and I am curious to see if there are going to be any sparks!

Max and Helen have been through a lot during New Amsterdam's second season. It all started with the fallout from that shocking Season 1 finale cliffhanger, which resulted in the death of Max’s wife, and Helen getting injured. Fast forward to the midseason finale, and Helen had her titles at the hospital taken away. In some positive news, Max learned his cancer had gone into remission.

Helen will have to deal with deciding whether to stay on at the hospital when New Amsterdam returns. I hope and think she will choose to stick around! As for her good friend Max, he finally started making headway in his grief over his wife’s death, which he had struggled to come to terms with throughout the early part of Season 2.

What is going to happen between Max and Helen when the drama resumes? It sounds like there's a lot for fans of the characters and their connection to look forward to! Teasing what is coming up between Max and Helen, New Amsterdam showrunner David Schulner told TVLine:

Well, this is a slightly more hopeful update for fans of a Helen/Max pairing than they got when this season kicked off! After New Amsterdam’s Season 2 premiere, David Schulner had far less assuring news to share. At the time, Schulner emphasized the fantastic friendship that the characters share and indicated that bond would be the focus of their dynamic moving forward. Thus, friend-zoning the duo.

What a difference (roughly) half a season makes. A great friendship tends to be the cornerstone of a correspondingly strong romance, in my opinion. Max clearly needs Helen, and they make an incredible team. The question is: should they risk the friendship for something more?

If the friendship is so strong that they want to take that next step, then I think it should survive romance. Escaping the friend zone can be a risky move. However, something tells me that New Amsterdam will eventually take the leap and have Max and Helen explore their relationship further.

As for Max and Helen’s friendship, New Amsterdam’s showrunner hinted that they will be fully reconnecting soon with Max opening up to Helen again. On how the two will be moving forward, David Schulner told TVLine:

That sounds positive! While fans wait to see if something more comes from Helen and Max’s relationship, they can always enjoy their friendship. That bond will continue to develop when New Amsterdam returns. Of course, fans will continue wondering if something beyond platonic awaits.

Ever since New Amsterdam began, the incredible chemistry that exists between Ryan Eggold (Max Goodwin) and Freema Agyeman (Helen Sharpe) has been unmistakable. For the show not to explore Max and Helen on a romantic level in the future would, in my opinion, be bizarre at this point. It is a slow burn that should eventually sizzle!

New Amsterdam has big plans for Dr. Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) in Season 2. Viewers have seen a lot of Iggy in his professional life. They are about to get a better glimpse of his personal one. Iggy wears many hats in life and he is a compassionate doctor, a loving husband, and an active father.

A lot was going on in the Season 2 premiere, including the aftermath of last season’s ambulance crash. As a result of revealing who died, New Amsterdam also gave viewers an update on its doctors’ personal lives. When the second season started, Iggy was struggling to get home to his husband, Martin, and their kids at a good time.

Before the Season 2 premiere ended, Iggy told Martin that he wanted to adopt another child. Iggy’s desire to add to their family will be a vital part of his story as the medical drama moves forward. Teasing Iggy’s upcoming storyline, New Amsterdam showrunner, David Schulner, told TVLine:

It sounds like New Amsterdam is going to be taking as deep of a dive into Iggy’s issues as he does with his patients. The psychiatrist has been shown taking a very active role in treating those who come into the hospital. His level of empathy has allowed him to help them reach previously unattainable breakthroughs.

What will New Amsterdam’s probing into Iggy’s issues reveal? How will it resolve itself with respect to Iggy’s desire to expand his and his husband’s family? Will they end up adopting another child, after all is said and done? Based on what the series’ showrunner is saying, something is driving Iggy’s heart when it comes to adopting again.

It also sounds as though New Amsterdam will continue exploring Iggy’s treatment method. Fans will recall that, last season, Iggy was on the receiving end of a review regarding his course of treatment. In last season’s finale, Dr. Vijay Kapoor (Anupam Kher) proved vital in helping Iggy as they treated a man suffering from severe PTSD. Hopefully, they can keep teaming up!

Iggy has a huge heart and a lot of empathy for people, which makes him so good at what he does. Will he have to work on tempering that to some extent? What impact will all of this have on Iggy’s marriage? Martin is a great dad and husband, but he was pretty overwhelmed as Season 2 started.

I believe they can make it through whatever comes. Iggy is such a wonderful character, so I am excited that his personal life is getting a closer look. New Amsterdam has shown time and again how a doctors’ life away from their lab coat impacts their professional duties. So, it will be interesting to learn how Iggy’s story progresses.

New Amsterdam has given fans a lot to consider as Max’s worrisome grief process got a spotlight not too long ago. Between the deep dive into Iggy’s psyche and the "shocking reveal" for Helen, the NBC drama has a lot going on.

New episodes of New Amsterdam air Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. Season 2 of the medical drama is one of this year’s many fall premieres.

New Amsterdam has a new romance in store for one of its doctors who was involved in the life-and-death storyline that ended last season. The resolution came in the tragic Season 2 premiere that revealed who died following last season’s cliffhanger ending.

Dr. Helen Sharpe, Dr. Lauren Bloom, and Max’s wife, Georgia, were all potential victims in the aftermath of last season’s ambulance crash. In the Season 2 premiere, New Amsterdam revealed that it was Max’s wife, Georgia, who had succumbed to her injuries. Helen and Lauren both survived. In the wake of the accident, both will be doing their best to move forward.

It will be Lauren who embarks on a new romance. Fans will recall that when New Amsterdam began, Lauren had been in a relationship with Dr. Floyd Reynolds. He ended things in the series premiere and has since moved on, becoming engaged to his fiancée, Evie.

Lauren’s upcoming romance will come via a newly introduced doctor set to arrive on New Amsterdam, per TVLine. JJ Feild will play Dr. Zach Ligon on the medical drama. For some background, Feild starred as David in the Idris Elba-led Netflix series, Turn Up Charlie. There is more info!

Based on promotional pictures from the upcoming New Amsterdam episode, I can surmise that JJ Field’s Zach may be treating or overseeing Lauren’s physical therapy. Will that be how they meet and begin a romance? Stay tuned. As seen in the Season 2 premiere, Lauren is still dealing with a lot of pain from the accident.

Last season, she had a rough go of it after becoming addicted to Adderall. In Season 2, Lauren is trying to manage her way through her pain “cold turkey,” according to what New Amsterdam’s showrunner, David Schulner, said to TVLine. As for Lauren’s new romance, Schulner said:

It sounds like Lauren may be a bit resistant to this new romance. Will it last? Fans will have to wait and see. She will undoubtedly have a lot of stories to share with him. She performed an emergency c-section on Max’s wife in their bedroom during last season’s finale. Then, she survived an ambulance crash.

New Amsterdam started off Season 2 with Lauren back at work as the head of the Emergency Department. She is going to be busy as this relationship gets underway. Along with Lauren’s romance, fans have Max and Helen’s relationship to continue to enjoy. For now, New Amsterdam’s showrunner has confirmed their bond will remain platonic.

As for Helen, a “shocking reveal” is in store for the fan-favorite. There will also be an update on her romance with future Flash star, Sendhil Ramamurthy’s Dr. Akash Panthaki. Are they still dating? Will Lauren’s new relationship go the distance? Tune in to New Amsterdam and find out.

The Season 2 premiere of New Amsterdam was largely occupied with resolving the big Season 1 cliffhanger that left the lives of the three biggest women in Max's life in danger, although the episode took its time with the ultimate reveal that it was Georgia who perished after the ambulance crash. The reveal that Dr. Helen Sharpe had survived came relatively early in the episode, despite a brief misdirect at one point that had another doctor occupying Helen's office.

While fans undoubtedly would have been shocked if Helen was the one to die, there is apparently a genuine shock coming in the not-too-distant future for Helen, and it will have to do with her desire to have a child. Addressing the questions of where she is about wanting to be a mom in Season 2 and if she's still dating Dr. Panthaki, New Amsterdam showrunner David Schulner said this:

The second episode of Season 2 will reveal where Helen is regarding having a child and the romance with Dr. Panthaki, but David Schulner's comments to TVLine reveal that the big shock isn't coming until later in the season. Now, given that this is a TV show, it's only natural to assume that a "shocking reveal" that comes "on the child front" means an unplanned pregnancy for Helen.

That said, would David Schulner and Co. go with something so predictable as an unplanned pregnancy, especially this early in the run of the series? And even if that was the plan, would Schulner had given away the game when only one episode of Season 2 has aired so far? At this point, I'm more inclined to suspect that the shock doesn't have to do with Helen winding up pregnant, although I don't really have any practical alternative.

How New Amsterdam Decided Who To Kill Off In Season 2 Premiere

I doubt she'll be moving in with Max to act as stepmom to baby Luna so soon after Georgia died, and Max seems to be doing more or less okay as a single dad. Is he dealing with Georgia's death by imagining that she's still alive? Yes. Is he still functional as both a doctor and a person? Also yes. David Schulner did reveal some bad news for New Amsterdam fans who want Max and Helen to begin a romantic relationship.

It makes sense that Helen would be able to move on from the crash sooner than the others who were involved. Max obviously lost his wife and the mother of his infant daughter, and Lauren is still dealing with the injuries she sustained in the crash. Helen was injured as well, but she recovered. It's a good sign that she's looking toward her future!

New Amsterdam opened Season 2 with the reveal of who died following that ambulance crash in last season’s finale, but not before making fans wait quite a while to learn who didn't make it. The medical drama spent most of its premiere as if Max’s wife, Georgia, Dr. Helen Sharpe, and Dr. Lauren Bloom had survived the accident.

Despite the tease, it was known that someone was not going to survive the premiere, and someone did not. In the end, New Amsterdam revealed that it was Max’s wife, Georgia, who succumbed and passed away, meaning that Helen and Lauren both survived. Was the tragic twist designed to pave the way for Helen and Max to get together?

New Amsterdam’s showrunner, David Schulner, was asked if Helen and Max’s relationship swayed the decision about who to kill off. Schulner confirmed that having Georgia die was planned from Day One with clues put in the pilot. However, he almost went back on that decision before getting some gentle support from executive producer Peter Horton, who advised him to follow through on the twist.

So what, if any, impact did Max and Helen’s burgeoning bond have in New Amsterdam’s decision to kill off Max’s wife? Schulner told TVLine:

It does not sound like New Amsterdam killed off Max’s wife to clear the narrative way for a Helen and Max pairing. At least, not at the moment. The medical drama’s showrunner reveals that the plan is to continue playing Max and Helen as best friends.

David Schulner did acknowledge the concern that having Georgia die made it “too easy” for fans hoping for a Max / Helen coupling to get what they wanted. If that does eventually happen, it sounds like New Amsterdam fans are in for a wait.

As for where Max and Helen’s relationship currently stands, for David Schulner that is a good question. Schulner was asked about the dynamic between Max and Helen in the Season 2 premiere, to which he responded, saying:

From what David Schulner is saying, the status of Helen and Max's relationship in the Season 2 premiere was only due to Max’s grief, and him not wanting to discuss his loss. Helen, being the magnificent friend that she is, did not let that dissuade her from offering her support, though. As New Amsterdam’s showrunner explained, she let Max know that she was there for him and would be, whenever he's ready to talk.

Where does this leave fans who hope that Max and Helen’s connection will be romantically realized? Well, it does not sound like it will never happen. Even though, the "we don't want them to be together" part is problematic.

If Helen and Max do get together, it sounds like fans are in for a considerable wait. It seems highly possible that New Amsterdam is laying the groundwork for an eventual coupling, especially when you look at last season's arc.

The medical drama hinted at Georgia’s fate with the blizzard episode and what the psychic predicted while being treated by Max and Helen. It is not as if New Amsterdam has not acknowledged that Helen and Max’s relationship may extend past platonic feelings.

As for Season 2, New Amsterdam will not be without Max and Helen’s connection, which will continue to be a focus for the drama. His new doctor offered good tidings regarding his health. As viewers will recall, his cancer diagnosis opened the series and Helen will undoubtedly continue to be involved in that story too.

Just when everything seemed to finally be resolved, New Amsterdam hit its characters with a devastating blow. The freshman NBC series concluded its Season 1 finale with the crash of two ambulances. One of which was carrying Max, his newborn baby Luna, Max’s wife Georgia, Dr. Helen Sharpe, and Dr. Lauren Bloom.

Only Max and baby Luna appeared to be unscathed (for the most part). Georgia, fresh from a dramatic and almost life-ending at-home birth, was whisked away on a gurney. Unfortunately, Helen was not shown, leaving her status entirely unclear. However, an unconscious Bloom could also be seen getting medical attention.

The cast has no idea who has gotten killed off the show. To be clear, a series regular character will die as the result of the cliffhanger in the Season 1 finale. How is Max going to handle the aftermath of these three important women in his life being in this accident? Ryan Eggold replied by telling TVLine:

As it stands, Bloom, Helen, and Max’s wife are in jeopardy. None of the actresses know which of them will not be returning alive for Season 2. If you have your theory as to who will pass away, allow yourself a few more possible clues.

New Amsterdam executive producers, David Schulner and Peter Horton, weighed in on the dramatic Season 1 finale. When asked about who was under the sheet and why viewers are not shown Helen, Horton told TVLine he wanted fans to ask those questions during the break.

He also divulged that the reveal will occur during the Season 2 premiere. David Schulner added the cast does not know who will die before saying:

Whoever it is, it is going to be sad. So, while fans are undoubtedly curious to find out who is gone, it is going to be a downer either way.

Make no mistake: the reveal of who is getting killed off New Amsterdam is being kept top secret. When asked if the decision regarding who is dead has already gotten made, David Schulner said:

It is really tough to figure out which way New Amsterdam is going to go with this cliffhanger. Helen is the female lead of the show, so it stands to reason that she will survive. Plus, she has so much story left to tell.

Georgia surviving the crash right after she barely survived giving birth seems like too many near-death experiences for her to escape. She was already in bad shape. Then again, the new mother dying right after she survived seems too cruel of a twist.

Bloom has been in and out this season. In the Season 1 finale, she saved Georgia and baby Luna. She also seems to have a lot of storylines left to tell. This is a cliffhanger that is really between Georgia and Bloom, in my opinion. It is all so sad. New Amsterdam has set up a tragedy either way.
