Keke Palmer is one of the funniest and hardest-working actresses out there right now, delivering great titles over the past couple of years including Nope, One of Them Days and a reimagining of The ‘Burbs, to name just a few. She’s keeping her foot on the gas for the 2026 movie calendar, too, teaming up with Boots Riley for I Love Boosters. Reviews are in as the film hits theaters May 22, and I’m intrigued by critics’ reactions to the “deranged” crime comedy.

In I Love Boosters, Keke Palmer’s Corvette leads a group of shoplifters — aka “boosters” — against fashion maven Christie Smith (Demi Moore) after she steals their designs. The ensemble cast boasts too many big names to list, and in his review of I Love Boosters, Joseph Tomastik of Loud and Clear says Riley brings the same chaos and big twists to this as he did to Sorry to Bother You. The critic gives it a perfect 4 out of 4 stars, writing:

Bill Bria of SlashFilm rates it 8 out of 10 and says I Love Boosters is one of the most visually innovative comedies in some time. It draws colorful inspiration from ‘90s cult movies, music videos, fashion and street culture to drive home its message, even incorporating stop-motion animation and a monstrous creature. Bria continues:

Alyssa Mora of IGN also rates it a “Great” 8 out of 10, calling it a “cheeky takedown of capitalism served up in signature Boots Riley bizarre fashion.” I Love Boosters is equal parts romp and political statement, the critic says in her review:

Ryan Lattanzio of IndieWire gives it a B, writing that even as I Love Boosters “spins wildly out of control,” Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie and Taylour Paige are able to ground the “dizzying, entertaining acid trip.” That’s especially true of Palmer, as Lattanzio says:

Jacob Oller of AV Club also gives I Love Boosters a B in his review for how Boots Riley paints an amusement park ride in the bright colors of his politics. The style is like a “Marxist Pee-wee Herman run wild,” Oller says, that “weaponizes silliness of all flavors.” Some choices are more overbearing than exhilarating, but the critic loves how Riley uses classic animation to inform his vision, writing:

Boots Riley clearly has some things he wants to say, and these reviews suggest he’s using all forms of humor, animation, colorful sets and some highly comedic actors to get those messages across. Critics have rated it 92% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, so if this movie sounds at all interesting or intriguing to you, take Riley’s suggestion and see it opening weekend.

I Love Boosters hits theaters on Friday, May 22.

I don’t think the sheer trend will ever go out of style, especially since celebs are constantly upping their game and rocking new and innovative outfits that are see-through. Case in point, Demi Moore just rocked a lovely lavender gown that I’m utterly obsessed with, and we need to talk about it.

Demi Moore wore the look you’re about to see to the La Vie D'Une Femme screening at the Cannes Film Festival. She’s currently serving on this year’s competition jury for the festival, which means she’s attending lots of screenings and premieres in glamorous gowns. Her most recent outfit was this lovely lavender look:

Now, this outfit is custom Gucci, according to Moore’s stylist, Brad Goreski. Over on Instagram, he shared that information along with a stunning image of the gown on a hanger. Take a look at this remarkable sheer number in the lovely light:

I’m seriously obsessed with this look. It’s also styled to perfection. Along with the off-the-shoulder gown, the Ghost star rocked pretty dangly diamond earrings and a matching ring. She also had on matching purple pumps. For the makeup, they kept it fairly neutral, which let the purple really shine, and she wore her hair in a semi-wet look that complemented the sheer dress perfectly.

Overall, this look fits right in with Moore’s unique style. From the feather dress she wore to the 2026 Oscars to this purple number, she’s never afraid to make a bold statement with her red carpet ensembles. And I love it.

I’m also so here for how this gown plays into the sheer trend. We’ve seen Rachel Zegler rock a flowy lavender sheer look that included lingerie. Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman had a purple sheer dress in a magazine spread that was form-fitting and to die for. Then, Moore’s dress almost looks like water cascading down her body, and I love the mix of that texture with the bright lavender color.

Truly, from gothic see-through looks to vibrant ones like this, the sheer trend knows no bounds, and the Landman actress has fully proven that again.

This likely won’t be the last stunning outfit we see from Moore, either. The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 12 to 23, and the actress has already had more than one jaw-dropping fashion moment. That’s right, this purple number was the follow-up to the sequined JACQUEMUS gown Moore wore to the festival’s opening ceremony. So, as the event goes on, I expect to see her slaying the red carpet in more lovely looks.

Now, while we wait for those, this vibrant dress also reminded me that Demi Moore is starring in Boots Riley and Keke Palmer's literally colorful project on the 2026 movie schedule, I Love Boosters. That film hits theaters on May 22, so this purple number was the perfect reminder to get excited for it.

So, with all that said, let’s all take a moment to appreciate this sheer lavender gown from Demi Moore. She once again has proven her status as a fashion icon, and she’s shown us yet another way to slay the sheer trend.

In the 1980s, the Brat Pack was churning out hit after hit. One of the biggest was St. Elmo’s Fire, which in many ways is quintessential Brat Pack, with a bunch of members of that crew starring, like Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, and Andrew McCarthy. I haven’t actually sat down and watched the movie in decades, and when I did recently, I cringed through the whole slog. I mean, the whole thing.

It’s Hard To Pick The Cringiest Thing, But Emilio Estevez’s Plot Is Close

There is a lot to bristle at throughout the movie. The jokes are incredibly corny, and everything in the script is just so…basic. Deciding which is the most awkward subplot is tough, but the story involving Kirby (Estevez) stalking a woman he had a crush on, Dale Bieberman (Andie McDowell), is definitely in the running. It starts innocently enough, with the two running into each other for the first time in years at a hospital where Dale is a doctor. It goes off the rails completely from there.

First, Dale and Kirby go on an awkward first date that ends quickly when Dale has to run back to work. That’s after Kirby arrived at the restaurant hours before the date. It’s weird, but ok, I can buy it. Then it gets really uncomfortable when Kirby literally starts stalking her, following her to a party in the pouring rain. Still, for some reason, she decides she needs to take him back to her place to explain why a relationship wouldn’t work.

Kirby isn’t one to take no for an answer, and decides it’s all about money, and he takes a job with an entrepreneur to make some, seemingly ditching his dreams of becoming a lawyer. He throws a party at his boss's house. She doesn’t show, and Kirby tracks her own at a ski resort, presumably many hours away. It’s honestly disturbing behavior, and it’s not just because the ‘80s were a “different time." Why Dale didn’t call the cops like half a dozen times doesn’t make sense. Instead, she and Kirby kiss at the lodge and leave on good terms. Kirby should have been in jail. But, at least they don’t end up together.

The Plot Between Demi Moore And Rob Lowe

What is more in keeping with the 1980s is the scene between Rob Lowe’s character, Billy, and Demi Moore’s, Jules. After Kirby’s party, the two drunkenly make out in a car, and Billy comes very close to a straight-up sexual assault. I get that Billy is the “screw up” of the group and that drugs and booze have messed him up, but in a real-world situation, I don’t quite understand how Jules would ever speak to Billy again after the encounter. She might have even filed charges.

Yet… they stay friends. I don’t know if it’s simply unrealistic or disturbing. Or both. ‘80s movies are notorious for scenes like this that didn't end with realistic consequences (yes, people understood sexual assault in the ‘80s). The worst part is that once Jules’ life falls apart at the end, it’s Billy who saves her, and the only one she’ll listen to after she attempts the most bizarre suicide ever by freezing to death. What’s worse is that after all that, Billy ends up basically begging Wendy (Mare Winningham) for what can only be described as pity sex, and it works. It’s all pretty gross.

Even The Realistic Stuff Is Cringy

One subplot involved Billy’s relationship with Wendy. Wendy is the naive one in the clique, and she is struggling with finding her way in the world. Her old-fashioned father treats her like young women were often treated by the older generation, even in the ‘80s. He wants her to quit her job, get married, and start having kids. That is actually pretty realistic, and yeah, by modern standards, it’s super cringe, as the kids would say.

The most realistic subplot in the movie involves the love triangle between Alec (Judd Nelson), Leslie (Ally Sheedy), and Kevin (Andrew McCarthy). Even that ends in a pretty uncomfortable way when Leslie breaks up with Alec amid his numerous infidelities and hooks up with Kevin. The sex scene is pure cringe. Even that whole thing ends weirdly with Alec and Kevin accepting that Leslie loves both of them, but can’t be with either.

Oh! And that’s not even mentioning the cringy subplot that involves Jules thinking Kevin is gay and trying to set him up with her interior designer, Ron. Now that is the kind of ‘80s subplot that the world has moved on from. Oof.

It Still Ends On A High Note

The kicker is, at the end, they decide that they all still love each other. After all they have been through, the debauchery, the betrayals, and the borderline sexual assaults, they somehow stay best friends. I like happy endings, but this one is just too saccharine even for me.

The only thing that seems to have changed is that instead of hanging out at St. Elmo’s (the bar where they were regulars), they start hanging out at Houlihan’s. I honestly don’t know if it’s supposed to be a joke. Remember, Houlihan’s was kinda hip among the yuppies in the ‘80s.

The other thing that I think made this movie a hit both then and with people who still love it today is the soundtrack. It’s a banger, filled with some great ‘80s tunes, many of which have stood the test of time. It’s the soundtrack of my early life, and I have nostalgia for it, so I’ll always love it. Yet again, though, there is even a cringe factor to the music, toying with emotions the way it does.

There are plenty of Brat Pack movies from the ‘80s that get talked about both for their good and bad points, movies like Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink, but fewer people seem to talk about St. Elmo’s Fire, which is the most dated of them all.

There’s no doubting how famous Rumer Willis’ parents are, with Bruce Willis amongst the greatest action stars of all time before he was forced to retire from acting and her mom Demi Moore set to appear in the 2026 movie release I Love Boosters. However, Rumer is setting the record straight about how she supports herself and her daughter, after fans apparently assumed she was living off of her parents’ income.

Rumer Willis has one daughter, Louetta Isley Thomas Willis, who made Bruce Willis a grandpa when she was born in 2023. The 37-year-old has been open about her parenting journey, including what it’s like to be a single mom since her 2024 breakup with musician Derek Richard Thomas, and she posted a photo on Instagram listing some of the multiple tasks she juggles on a daily basis:

Many fans in the comments appreciated the post, saying they felt seen and identified with the multiple hats that single parents wear. Others, however, apparently took issue with Rumer Willis’ post because of her parents’ fame.

Bruce and Demi’s daughter didn’t take the criticism lying down, either, as she posted a new Story to set the record straight, writing:

Rumer Willis strongly rebuffed the notion that she skims off of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s fortune to benefit her own life by pointing out that she has four different jobs. For one thing, she has followed mom and dad’s footsteps into acting, even appearing in several movies with her parents.

Most recently she appeared in an episode of Ryan Murphy’s Doctor Odyssey, though strangely it wasn’t in the “Spring Break” episode that featured other so-called “nepo-babies” Ava Phillippe, Paris Jackson and Charlotte Lawrence.

However, even after Rumer Willis clarified that she makes her own money, people still continued to call out her privilege, saying that having Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s money as a backup meant that she never had to worry about losing her home or not being able to pay her bills. Rumer responded to that as well in another Story, where she acknowledged her privilege but denied thinking of her parents as a safety net:

She said she has experienced the financial stress that comes with inconsistent work, and she pointed out that someone with stability in one area like finances or housing might experience hardships in other parts of their lives. Rumer doesn’t mention her dad in these posts, but she’s opened up plenty about how hard Bruce Willis’ health issues are for their family.

Just because her life is different from others’ doesn’t mean she doesn’t have things in common with them, she said, continuing:

Clearly there are strong opinions on both sides here, but regardless of if or how much Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s financial situation has benefited their children, I love that Rumer set the record straight on how hard she works for her daughter, while still calling for us all to have grace for one another.

We’ve continued to get updates from Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Heming, over the years regarding the ‘80s and ‘90s action star’s condition since frontotemporal dementia forced him to retire from acting. Willis’ ex-wife, Demi Moore, has had nothing but praise for what Heming’s done for her ex as well as other caretakers, but things got a little more personal during a recent Q&A. Moore opened up to Kate Hudson about a sweet memory from her and Willis’ marriage that resurfaced when she watched Song Sung Blue.

Kate Hudson has received a lot of praise for her performance as Claire Sardina in Song Sung Blue, a musical biopic about the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder, even getting nominated for a Golden Globe. Demi Moore did a Q&A with the actress at a screening last week, where the Substance star told Hudson how the movie had sparked a meaningful memory. She recalled (via US Weekly):

Demi Moore said Bruce Willis would play the artist’s songs throughout the day, noting that he was “a huge Neil fan,” and she was, too.

Music is so powerful in the way it can evoke such strong memories and feelings. With Neil Diamond being such an important musician to Bruce Willis, I can only imagine what an emotional experience it must have been for Demi Moore to see Song Sung Blue and hear those tunes.

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore were married from 1987 to 2000 and share three daughters — Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31. Even after their divorce, as he married Emma Heming in 2009 and had two more daughters — Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11 — they remained close, even famously quarantining together during the pandemic.

This latest chapter in Bruce Willis’ story has undoubtedly been hard on all involved, and his daughters have spoken candidly about the hard parts and what they’re grateful for. Emma Heming has described the FTD as both a blessing and a curse, as he is sheltered from the awareness of his disease.

Last year, as Willis' ability to communicate became a bigger issue, the decision was made to move him to a separate house where he could better receive the care he needed. Meanwhile, his younger daughters remained with their mother in the home better suited to their needs.

When times get tough for Bruce Willis’ family, it’s nice that they have such great memories to hold onto, and I love that Demi Moore shared how Song Sung Blue transported her back to her Neil Diamond Days with him.

The list of famous actors Taylor Sheridan has hired for his shows is long and illustrious, and it includes Demi Moore. However, in Season 1 of Landman, her character, Cami, was barely seen. That’s all about to change, though, because as Season 2 of the oil drama hits the 2025 TV schedule, The Substance star spoke to me about how her character won’t be a “Where’s Wlado” in the upcoming episodes.

After Cami was underused in Landman’s first season, fans made it clear that they wanted more of Demi Moore in this Billy Bob Thornton-led drama. Well, it turns out that was always part of the plan. During an interview for CinemaBlend, I asked the actress what she was told about her character’s arc during her first meeting with Taylor Sheridan. In response, she explained that she knew Cami wouldn’t be in much of Season 1 but would make a splash in Season 2. She told me:

I figured this would be the case. I had assumed they wouldn’t have hired Demi Moore to play Cami if there wasn’t a bigger story planned for her. However, seeing very little of her in Season 1 as she was earning a lot of praise for her Oscar-nominated role in The Substance emphasized the question about why Cami wasn’t a bigger player in Landman, considering the stature of the actress playing her.

It sounds like the plan for her character will really kick into high gear, though, during Season 2. Following the death of Jon Hamm’s character, Monty, Cami is set to play a bigger role in M*Tex, and I’m excited to see her interact more with Tommy Norris, Billy Bob Thornton’s character. Moore told me that her character will be doing that too, as she continued to recall that first conversation she had with Landman’s co-creator:

In Season 2, we’ll get to see Tommy and Cami pick up the pieces that were left after Monty’s death. As the trailers show us, the fallout will be rough as they fight for the “success” Moore’s character is after. It also feels like there’s trouble brewing between Cami and Tommy, as they are clearly working to figure out who has the most power in this situation.

So, yeah, I’d say Demi Moore has a much larger role to play in Season 2 of Landman, and I’m very excited that she won’t be like a “Where’s Waldo” this season. Based on these comments and what we’ve seen so far, it seems like she’ll be front and center, which I’m sure will make fans happy.

In the 1980s, Dan Aykroyd played a big part in some of the best movies of the decade, but there is one movie that isn’t just unfunny, it’s not a dark comedy, either; it’s just downright scary: 1991’s Nothing But Trouble. If you’ve never seen it or even heard of it, I wouldn’t be surprised. It was on cable a lot back then, and given that it has an all-star cast that also included Chevy Chase, Demi Moore, and John Candy, I will reluctantly admit I’ve watched it more times than it deserves. Now, when I think back, I don’t think of the laughs; I think of the horrors of the movie, and it’s not just the crummy writing.

An All-Star Cast At The Height Of Their Careers

The movie, which is also written and directed by Dan Aykroyd, features four of the biggest stars of the era. Chevy Chase was coming off National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, unquestionably one of the best Christmas movies of all time. John Candy had just starred in Home Alone. Demi Moore’s film directly before this one was a little movie called Ghost. Aykroyd starred in My Girl earlier that same year.

It’s hard to imagine a more successful group of movies where the stars then returned for a movie as… disappointing as Nothing But Trouble. The premise of the film is simple enough: Chase and Moore’s characters are on a road trip and find themselves in a backwater town called Valkenvania. They are pulled over after running a stop sign by the town’s police chief, played by Candy, and end up in front of a judge, played by Aykroyd. Everyone in the town is related and all named Valkenheiser, hence the name of the town.

It all goes off the rails after that.

The Movie Is Just Gross

In the movie, all of the Valkenheisers, mostly played by Aykroyd and Candy, who both assume multiple roles, are really, really weird-looking. It’s hard to describe just how unsettling all of the characters look. There is one scene in particular, where Chase and Moore end up at dinner with the senior member of the family, the 106-year-old Alvin "J.P" Valkenheiser, played by Aykroyd, wearing some of the most upsetting makeup I’ve ever seen in a movie. As he shovels hot dogs down his gullet, Chase and Moore try to escape, but are captured by Alvin’s inbred granddaughter (played by Candy).

The makeup alone is enough to make you sleep with the lights on. Add in the bizarre plotlines of incest, underground coal fires, and feasts of the nastiest-looking hot dogs ever, and you have the makings of a legendary horror movie. But this is a comedy. It’s hard to even laugh at how completely bizarre the whole thing is, because it’s so upsetting to watch Aykroyd and Candy in their makeup.

Oh, and did I mention that there is a random appearance by G-Shock and the rest of the legendary ‘90s rap group Digital Underground? Because, yeah, that’s in there too. Frankly, there is nothing on the 2025 movie schedule, which is full of horror movies that I love, that is nearly as nightmare-inducing as this supposed comedy. Watch at your own risk.

It was a sad day when it was announced that filmmaker/actor Robert Redford passed away in his sleep at the age of 89. He started acting in the 60s, and spent his career starring in movies like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All The President's Men and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (to name a few), directing films like Ordinary People and Quiz Show, among others, and founding and working on the Sundance Film Festival. He truly left behind a legacy that will be remembered forever, and now, A-list stars like Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and more have taken the time to pay tribute to the late actor and the effect he had on them.

You can thank Robert Redford for Scarlett Johansson’s acting debut. As a child star, she starred in one of the best horse movies, The Horse Whisperer, in which Redford directed and starred alongside her. The former MCU star made a heartwarming statement to EW, honoring the late actor/director and noting the impact he had on her:

Scarlett Johansson credited Redford in her tribute for first teaching her about acting and walking her "through all of the beats" of her Horse Whisperer character. As the JoJo Rabbit star walks in the shoes of a director with Eleanor the Great, Johansson made sure to credit the Santa Monica native for founding Sundance as a space for filmmakers to learn from each other.

Another Marvel alum, Samuel L. Jackson, also had the pleasure of working with the one-time Oscar winner. Robert Redford made his way into the MCU as S.H.I.E.L.D. head Alexander Pierce, sharing screentime with Nick Fury in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The Pulp Fiction actor took to Instagram to share kind words about meeting one of his “heroes” on the MCU set, writing:

Such kind words to send the five-time Golden Globe winner’s way. As heartbreaking as his death is, it appears Jackson looks back on feeling lucky he had the chance to work with a skilled actor he admired. As one of the Snakes on a Plane actor’s 2025 movie releases had him starring in the Western The Unholy Trinity, it feels fitting that one of his latest roles connects back to Redford’s beginning within that same genre.

Among the long list of talented stars who worked with the award-winning star/filmmaker was Jennifer Lopez. She took to her Instagram stories to write about the effect Redford had on her as they worked together in An Unfinished Life:

Jennifer Lopez’s tribute really highlights what a loving impact Robert Redford had on his co-stars. It’s clear that even though An Unfinished Life wasn’t directed by him, he admirably still took the time to bring his “wisdom” to the Hustlers actress to ensure they made a great project together.

Last but not least, Demi Moore took to her Instagram to throw back to Indecent Proposal, the ‘90s box office hit she and Robert Redford starred in. Her moving caption to the All is Lost actor is sure to leave you in tears:

It’s easy to want to go back to the last moment you shared with a beloved figure and repeat it all over again. But, even as the world mourns for Redford, those who knew him can celebrate the many ways he touched their hearts and the endearing memories he left behind.

Based on the many tributes that talented stars left for Robert Redford, it's clear the BAFTA winner left a huge mark on many who were lucky to know him as well as those who admired his work. Through his countless works of film and the knowledge he brought to his co-stars, I know Redford will forever be remembered.

Landman Season 2 is well on its way to its premiere on the 2025 TV schedule, and we officially know we’ll be getting way more of Demi Moore (thank goodness). However, her character Cami and Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy won’t be the only pairings we can look forward to. Oh, no, the cast confirmed a few other duos coming in the new episodes that I’m even more excited about.

It’s been confirmed that following the death of Jon Hamm’s Monty, his wife, Cami, will have to work with Tommy to run M*Tex. That means, we’ll get to see Moore and Thornton work together and probably verbally spar on screen after fans spent all of Season 1 wondering why the Oscar nominee was barely used. However, that won’t be the only exciting pairing for Moore this season.

While chatting about the “interesting” dynamic between these two polar opposites, Moore and Thornton also opened up about other characters they’ll interact with. I was specifically intrigued by The Substance star’s comments about what’s coming between her and Ali Larter’s characters, as she told EW:

The Cami actress explained that, along with learning the ropes of the oil business, she will also be grieving the death of her husband. That’s where Ali Larter’s Angela comes in. EW reported that Tommy’s wife will help Moore’s character through her grief, and considering she’s one of the lighter characters on the show, I imagine her scenes with the Ghost actress will provide some much-needed levity for Cami.

Meanwhile, Larter will get to dip her toe into the more serious and potentially violent side of Landman. This story confirmed that she will be interacting with more than the Norris family this year and getting in on the action, a bit.

We now know she’ll share scenes with Andy Garcia’s cartel leader, who was introduced in Landman’s Season 1 finale, and it sounds like it’ll be a wild intersection of life and work, as the Final Destination actress explained:

I cannot wait for all these pairings this season, and after seeing the trailer for Season 2, I’m even more excited. It gave us our first look at Sam Elliott’s Landman character, highlighted just how much Moore will be featured this season, and provided insight into the primary conflicts. Take a look:

Talor Sheridan’s A-list casts are all impressive, but Landman’s hits different, and I cannot wait to see them all interact this season!

The fashion world has lost an icon, as designer Giorgio Armani passed away September 4 “peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones." He was 91. Many celebrities and other notable figures in the fashion industry were quick to pay tribute to Armani, including his fellow Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace, actress Julia Roberts, Victoria Beckham and many more.

Giorgio Armani celebrated 50 years in the fashion industry last year before falling ill, which caused him to miss his first Armani catwalk event ever this June at Milan Men’s Fashion Week, per USA TODAY. It’s obvious how much of an impact he had on so many, as Julia Roberts shared a photo of herself with Armani on the red carpet to Instagram with the caption:

Donatella Versace also took to social media to say that Giorgio Armani’s contribution to the world of fashion and the world in general will never be forgotten. She wrote:

For the past few years, any mention of the all-star actor Bruce Willis has been accompanied by an update on the celebrity’s health. Die Hard star Willis announced his retirement from acting back in 2022 due to a diagnosis of aphasia, which has graduated to FTD, a form of dementia. And while we continue to keep Willis in our thoughts, I like to think of him in terms of his illustrious career, which had decades worth of highs – as well as an even number of lows. I spent years writing a book that analyzed Bruce Willis’ complete film career, and a lot of my research revolved around his flirtation with the Ocean’s franchise, something ex-wife Demi Moore used to poke fun of him during a celebrity roast.

Demi Moore is currently making the rounds on behalf of her Oscar-nominated performance in The Substance. But a while back, she appeared as a celebrity guest for a roast of Bruce Willis. And during that “attack,” she ripped Willis for passing up the Danny Ocean role in Ocean’s 11. That got a huge laugh out of Willis. But several watching this clip might not have even known that was a thing. Here’s Demi Moore at the Bruce Willis Roast:

Let’s talk about what we know regarding Willis’s possible involvement in the Ocean’s series, and how Clooney made good on it for Willis in the long run.

Bruce Willis would have played Danny Ocean

So, as legend has it, Bruce Willis turned down the role of Danny Ocean, a part that eventually went to George Clooney. After seeing the way that Clooney occupies the role through three movies, I can’t imagine anyone else in the part. He’s the perfect blend of cool sophistication, but dirty casino sleaze. He’s ideal as Danny.

That’s not to say Bruce Willis couldn’t play the role. It just would have been different. He still could have been the calm, cool, collected leader of a team of thieves that included Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Julia Roberts, and more. Only, he turned the part down, as was explained by Clooney in a 2007 interview with Time. Said the Solaris star:

We’ll get to Ocean’s 12 in a second. Why did Willis turn down the part of Dany Ocean? We don’t know for sure, but I can tell you that he was plenty busy in 1999 and 2000, when this movie would have been going through negotiations and pre-production. The actor had just broken the bank by portraying a child psychiatrist opposite Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense. He was riding high on the success of Armageddon (1998) and the Matthew Perry comedy The Whole Nine Yards (2000). He didn’t need Steven Soderbergh’s casino romp.

Eventually, though, Willis got the chance to play in that particular sandbox, and to me, that’s a career highlight.

Bruce Willis stole the show in Ocean’s 12

Because Bruce Willis achieved global superstardom in the Die Hard franchise, he’s always been known as an action star. But Willis started in comedy, both on the TV show Moonlighting and in the film Blind Date. And his sharp sense of comedic timing was on display when he joined Soderbergh, Clooney and the cast for the European jaunt, Ocean’s 12.

In the scene, which I find quite brilliant, Matt Damon’s Linus is convincing Julia Roberts’ Tess to go along with a scheme that will have her pretending to be…. Well, pretending to be Julia Roberts. This will allow the crew the chance to infiltrate a museum and get close enough to a valuable treasure to steal it.

Only, as Tess is “pretending” to be Julia Roberts, she’s spotted by Bruce Willis playing the real Bruce Willis. And it leads to this high-wire comedy of errors that shows the best of everyone involved. Press play on this, and enjoy.

As George Clooney notes, it’s possible Willis just regretted not being in Ocean’s 11, and wanted a piece of the fun. But also, on the audio commentary track for Ocean’s 12, Soderbergh explained that he tasked Julia Roberts with choosing a scene partner she already was familiar with, and she and Willis go way back in their personal lives. Hence all the jokes about Tallulah’s Spongebob blanket being left in Taos, New Mexico… where Roberts once lived (and still owns a ranch).

And that’s the story behind Bruce Willis turning down Ocean’s 11, but still getting into the series for a brilliant cameo. It’s possible we might get another Ocean’s movie, as there have been rumblings of a script, but no official announcements from anyone involved. The Bruce Willis-Demi Moore blended family has remained tight-knit long past the A-lister’s divorce. And while the Die Hard actor’s 2022 diagnosis helped bond the relationships even more, it seems that this fam has always been there for one another. The ex-couples eldest daughter Rumer Willis opened up about what she’s most thankful to have learned from watching her parents' relationship over the years, and specifically, how well they co-parent.

The House Bunny actress was a guest on the British talk show Loose Women (via Us Magazine), where she talked about her personal life, including being a co-parent herself (Rumer gave birth in 2023), with ex Derek Richard Thomas. It seems that the Willis-Moore clan are as close as ever, which says a lot about both the Ghost star and the Pulp Fiction actor. Between how the famous fam had a hopeful Christmas together praying for their patriarch's health issues to subside and Tallulah Willis' sweet wedding wish, you can see just how much of the duo’s lessons have permeated. For the Sorority Row actress to reveal how special and valuable her parents' dedication to family life has been incredibly wholesome and generous to fans like me.

And, if that isn’t enough, Bruce Willis showing up to thank Californian first responders amid the wildfires puts it all over the top. With parental role models like Demi Moore and her ex-husband, it’s no wonder their girls are still right by their sides through thick and thin. But, let’s not forget Willis’ current wife, Emma Heming Willis. She and her kids with the Hollywood vet have been just as easily folded into the mix, and with her sharing her sentimental anniversary letter, all seem deeply entrenched in the precious loving tenants of the tight-knit contingency.

Hopefully, for Rumer Willis, and all who have been positively affected by Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s co-parenting, they have plenty more lessons to glean from the two.

In the best horror movies and psychological thrillers, every creature design tells a story, and Coralie Fargeat’s Oscar-nominated The Substance is no exception. The film’s makeup lead recently opened up about the intricate process behind designing Monstro Elisasue, the haunting yet deeply symbolic figure at the heart of the film. According to prosthetics boss Pierre Olivier Persin, Fargeat had two words she kept repeating throughout the design process for this creature, and I understand why.

Persin, the lead makeup artist on the flick, revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the Revenge helmer was adamant about a specific vision, emphasizing the character’s tragic nature over pure horror. The artist shared:

The team did an excellent job. The sad creature mashup of the two women clearly looks like a blender mix-up and evokes Elephant Man vibes. The sense of sadness, along with a feeling of euphoria during the film's final moments, is effectively conveyed through the incredible prosthetic work.

This meticulous approach extended beyond just the body. The design of Monstro’s head proved to be one of the biggest challenges, with the team struggling to find the perfect balance between horror and tragedy. Persin continued:

The France-born movie maker’s patience and attention to detail ensured that Monstro Elisasue was not just another horror villain but a fully realized character with depth and emotional weight. The final design strikes an unsettling balance, presenting a figure that is both terrifying and profoundly sorrowful. It serves as a visual representation of the film's themes of identity, transformation, and acceptance.

This effort has seemingly paid off, as The Substance made history alongside Nosferatu with the 2025 Academy Award nominations, breaking a long-standing tradition of the horror genre being overlooked during upcoming award shows season.

This isn’t the first time we’ve been given a behind-the-scenes glimpse into this modern horror masterpiece. The Substance's BTS featurette peeled back the curtain on just how much vision and effort Coralie Fargeat poured into the film, highlighting her immersive, hands-on approach to filmmaking. That’s precisely why I think the flick deserves all the attention it's getting.

Part of the annual Oscar race comes down to talent. You have to make a great movie, give a spectacular performance, or operate near the top of your craft to earn an Academy Award nomination. Another part of the process, though, is your “story,” and that can evolve as an awards campaign rolls along. Sometimes, the story works against you, which is something that Emilia Perez actress Karla Sofia Gascon is finding out. Most times, an uplifting narrative forms, and carries someone to the podium on Oscars night. That seems to be what’s going on with Demi Moore, whose unforgettable performance in The Substance earned the actress her first Oscar nomination, and wiped away some of the doubts she had about her own career.

Let’s look over what Demi Moore has said about her career since earning awards recognition for The Substance.

It’s easy to overlook the fact that, for decades, Demi Moore was one of the most powerful, and bankable, actors in Hollywood. She was a member of the infamous Brat Pack in the 1980s. She married Bruce Willis, forming one of the film industry’s most influential power couples. And in her prime, she carried movies like Striptease, Ghost, G.I. Jane, A Few Good Men and more to box office supremacy.

But while speaking to EW about the recognition she’s now receiving thanks to her role in The Substance, Moore makes it clear that criticisms of her and her abilities made her think that her career was over. Specifically, Moore opened up during her Golden Globes acceptance speech about a producer who’d dismissed her as a “popcorn” actress… whatever that means. Asked by EW if she has heard from that producer, Moore told the magazine:

Words have the ability to cut through any defense, and Demi Moore admits that she gave that producer’s comments too much power. She admits that she believed that while she could find work – playing the villain in a Charlie’s Angels movie, as an example – she wouldn’t be allowed by the industry to participate in the prestige projects.

The Substance proved that person wrong. But also, proved them a little bit right.

Demi Moore and The Substance are not your usual Oscar bait.

Let’s talk, again, about the stories that form around Oscar campaigns. Even though the film was nominated for five Oscars including Picture, Director and Actress, the narrative forming around The Substance is that it’s an unconventional “win” for horror to be recognized in the top categories by the Academy. It’s rare that a genre film performs this well at the Oscars.

Demi Moore proved that producer wrong. She made it into a prestige picture that earned Oscar nominations. But she actually proved them correct, as well, because she did it by carrying a genre flick that happened to make worthy commentary on the lack of options for a fading star.

It’s really quite brilliant.

One of the defining points of The Substance is that many in the entertainment industry – in the cult of celebrity – strive to maintain their relevance by doing whatever it takes to appear younger. Director Coralie Fargeat takes that point to hilarious extremes, but that doesn’t detract from the lesson people should take away from it. And casting Moore in the role of Elisabeth helps make her point. The industry looks at actors and actresses differently after a certain age. But this movie reminds them, vividly, that overlooking talent is a mistake.

As Demi Moore explained to EW in the same feature:

It will be very interesting to see where Demi Moore goes following this Oscar nomination and possible win. At the moment, we know that she’s part of the ensemble of the Landman series, but it’s a small role, which fans want producers to expand. Just recently, Cameron Diaz was asked about reviving Charlie’s Angels, following her return to acting for Netflix's Back In Action. It's unclear if that'll happen, but I'll certainly take Lucy Liu, Barrymore and Diaz appearing on Zoom together to celebrate Demi Moore’s The Substance performance for Vanity Fair. During their conversation, Lucy Liu said this of Moore’s Oscar-nominated work:

Imagine having all the Charlie’s Angels in your corner? Cameron Diaz was also very affected by Moore’s work in The Substance as well, saying this:

In The Substance, Moore plays a fictional Hollywood star named Elisabeth Sparkle who is fired from her aerobics TV show on her 50th birthday. While wrestling with no longer being valued in her industry, she decides to take a black market drug that allows her to create and be a "younger, more beautiful, more perfect" version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley) every two weeks. However, the drug leads to some complications in her life… to say the least.

With all of that in mind, the Mask star also applauded the way Coralie Fargeat's movie for how it “shredded” what a motion picture about the film industry could be and did it in the most “audacious, violent, crazy way that you could possibly do it.” The conversation on the Academy Awards contender was stimulating as was the recollection of the bikini scene from Full Throttle.

How Demi Moore Reflected On The Charlie’s Angels Bikini Scene With Her Co-Stars

Along with Demi Moore getting some major props from her former co-stars for The Substance, Drew Barrymore also lauded the Brat Pack member for joining Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle years ago. That casting came right after the actress had walked away from acting for a time. By that time, Moore had a ton of big movies under her belt. Barrymore talked about how Moore was a “badass” for walking away “at the height of success and taken time for herself” to raise her kids before returning to the business. Moore then said this:

Amid her promotion of The Substance, Demi Moore’s bikini scene from the action comedy has come up a few times. The Oscar nominee recalled chatter around her being in a bikini for the 2003 movie felt very “heightened” due to all the talk about how she looked. In regard to the scene, Moore has also admitted that she had no idea it would spark “such a big conversation,” but felt like it was just because she was 40.

Lately, though, ahead of The Kardashians Season 6 hitting the 2025 TV schedule, she’s been in “supportive girlfriend” mode, accompanying Timothée Chalamet to movie premieres and awards shows. How does the makeup mogul really feel about being her boyfriend’s plus-one — especially after seemingly getting snubbed by Demi Moore at the Golden Globes? An insider weighed in.

According to a source for People, Kylie Jenner has no issues whatsoever stepping out of the spotlight to allow her boyfriend’s cinematic achievements to be celebrated. She’s apparently “having fun” as she supports Timothée Chalamet at the Golden Globes and other events and is “really making an effort” to be by his side. The insider said:

There’s been plenty of speculation about how the momager feels about her youngest daughter’s romance, including Kylie’s decision to not talk about personal things in the media.

Some reports allege that Kris Jenner has a way of “hovering” over the lovebirds at a recent afterparty for A Complete Unknown, listening in on their conversations and offering unsolicited advice. Others say the matriarch is upset that Timothée Chalamet doesn’t flaunt her daughter more.

Kendall and Kylie Jenner — the latter of whom shares two children with ex-boyfriend Travis Scott — have famously kept their love lives off of The Kardashians (which can be streamed with a Hulu subscription), but this level of privacy from Kylie is rare, especially considering how many of the Kardashian sisters’ relationships have played out on our screens over the years.

It looks like there’s quite a bit of fun to be had on the upcoming season of The Kardashians, and while we shouldn’t expect an appearance from Timothée Chalamet — or for Kylie Jenner to even mention him — it’s good to hear from sources how much she’s embracing her supporting role in his life.

When I learned about Landman, I was blown away by the cast, with Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm and Demi Moore standing out as the big names I couldn’t wait to see on screen. So, you can imagine my disappointment when the actress on that list was barely used. I wasn’t the only one feeling this way either, many were shocked by Moore’s lack of screentime. However, now, the co-creator of this Texas-set show has opened up about her role and the fans' response to her character Cami in Season 1.

As Landman ran through the end of 2024 and into the 2025 TV schedule, I kept wondering week after week if Moore’s character would finally get a big breakout moment. Then, when she landed on the 2025 Golden Globe winner’s list for her role in The Substance, it put an exclamation point on this concern, because this actress is having a moment and it’s baffling that she didn’t play a bigger role in this show.

Thankfully, the show’s co-creator and executive producer, Christian Wallace, addressed this and Cami’s future during an interview with TV Line, saying:

For basically all of Season 1, Moore was simply playing Monty’s wife. We saw her at a track meet in the pool and eventually mourning her husband. However, at no point, did she ever really get her own storyline. That’s wild, especially because DEMI MOORE is playing the part.

However, it feels like they have something cooking for her. If Landman gets a second season, it seems like that’s when the Ghost actress could really shine. With Jon Hamm's Monty dead, there’s a lot of shifting going on within MTex’s hierarchy, and I feel like Cami will play a part in that, as Wallace alluded. Basically, I want to see her making a big play for power or taking control of the company and delivering monologues that make me love her like I love Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy.

Wallace spoke to that idea as well, saying:

Notably, Landman's reviews pointed out its representation of women as an issue, and I agree. In the case of Cami, she was deeply underutilized and there wasn’t much dimension to her character. I really only know that she’s Monty’s wife and has a past with Tommy. However, if Wallace’s point comes to fruition in Season 2, that could change.

I want to see Moore being a power player on this show, and it seems like they might be setting her up to be. So, here’s hoping that if we get more Landman it also means we get more Cami.

However, for the time being, you can go back and watch Landman with a Paramount+ subscription and start theorizing about how they could update Demi Moore’s part to make her a major character in this epic drama.

Major spoilers below for the Season 1 finale of Taylor Sheridan’s Landman, so tread carefully if you haven’t yet streamed the ep with a Paramount+ subscription.

With its first two episodes, Landman set up Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris as a lead character who won some fans over more than Yellowstone’s John Dutton had, and the streaming drama’s first season ended with the oil-focused patriarch suffering more than a few wounds at the hands (and hammered nails) of the Mexican cartel. All while Ali Larter’s Angela and Michelle Randolph’s Ainsley provided good vibes a-plenty while exploiting Mitchell Slaggert’s Ryder for his stripping skills.

Arguably most exciting was the arrival of a character whose introduction was set up by a long-ago casting report, but I’m not altogether sold on how successful the ep was on the whole, considering the Season 1 conclusion committed the same sin as the rest of the season by under-utilizing co-star Demi Moore. But we’ll get into that a bit lower down.

Andy Garcia's Galino Finally Arrived In A More Peaceful Way Than Expected

As one of the first major TV finales of the 2025 TV schedule, Landman delivered all kinds of titillation, from fiery explosions to close-up violence to strip-club shenanigans. Those first two tied back Episode 8’s National Guard airstrike test that accidentally took out a cartel vehicle and its inhabitants. Tommy’s dwindling relationship with the criminal organization might have fizzled out completely if Alex Meraz’s Jiminez had been able to continue torturing Tommy to death to send a message.

Fortunately for Billy Bob Thornton’s lead, Jiminez’s efforts were limited to several punches to the face, a hammer thwack to the hand, a nail driven into his thigh, and a can of gasoline being poured over his hooded head. Before the cartel enforcer could issue further damage, a slew of gunshots rang out in the gentleman’s club located above their heads, and Jiminez was shot to death by his own organization.

Which is when we joined Tommy in finally some face-time with Andy Garcia’s cartel kingpin Galino, whose personality and motivations are largely still a mystery to audiences, since he was only on screen for around seven minutes. I can’t be sure, but it seems like Jerry Jones’ cameo in the penultimate episode had more speaking time, but maybe it’s just because he told a long anecdote.

Considering the majority of the first season played out without his on-screen involvement, I’m hoping Galino and Tommy have to work closely together in the future to maintain peace without the need for more bodies to drop. Because if Galino didn’t hesitate to take out seemingly Jimenez's entire team, I imagine his more chaotic impulses will be very fun to watch Tommy tiptoe around as he tries to manipulate the gang boss.

Demi Moore's Cami Remained Criminally Underused, Which Needs To Be Fixed For Season 2

I realize that Taylor Sheridan likely had no inkling in mind that Demi Moore would win her first major acting award as Landman was in the midst of its first season. (She took home the 2025 Golden Globe for her stellar performance in Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance.) And so he didn’t have it in mind that he could easily capitalize on such success with her character Cami, who was easily the most underused in Season 1’s fully loaded ensemble.

As the doting wife of Jon Hamm’s oil-tethered bazillionaire Monty Miller, Cami appeared in more than half of Landman’s episodes, but without heading up her own storyline, and the finale didn’t exactly change the game in that respect. Because even though the preceding episode ended in a way that made it appear as if Monty had died, which could have led to Moore’s Cami nailing a marquee emotional sequence in the concluding ep, things didn’t play out so fatally.

Though her screentime was definitely upped in the extended-length episode, Moore’s character was mostly limited to looking sad during conversations about handling Monty’s will and assets in ways that are most likely to leave everyone millionaires. Later, we finally do get a moment with Cami sobbing against Monty’s chest as their daughters weep nearby, and the flat lines on the monitor make it seem clear that he did indeed pass on.

I’ll allow that Sheridan might not have even had much in mind for Camy’s story beyond her being a dutiful wife and friend to Tommy, and that Moore may not have been primed to take on anything wildly dramatic. But now that we’re at a point where she’s as hot an acting commodity as ever, I can only hope that Cami’s role in Season 2 is as beefy as Texas’ heaviest cattle, even if it means the creator has to make a few changes to his scripts before production begins anew.

All in all, the finale did a solid enough job of setting up this world’s near future, even if Paramount+ execs haven’t officially put the order in yet. Despite our hopes to see Jacob Lofland’s Cooper in the field more, it appears he’s taking a more physically manageable route as a deal broker for Tim DeZarn’s Perry Hardin and his neighbors, and his relationship with Paulina Chavez’s Ariana Medina is still heading in positive directions, albeit understandably slowly as she continues to mourn.

But before we can see how any of the above story points play out in the future, Season 2 has to actually exist. So just in case the studio bosses still need convincing, be sure to tell everyone you know to stream episodes of Landman on Paramount+.

There have been tangible reasons for the family to celebrate, and another one is on the horizon as Bruce and Demi’s daughter, Tallulah Willis, plans a wedding with musician Justin Acee.

There is no date set for the couple’s nuptials, though a source told Life and Style Magazine that Tallulah Willis plans to ramp up the schedule on the ceremony, for one specific reason tied to her father. As the source explains:

In addition to being a blockbuster film star, a celebrity, a musician, and an entrepreneur, Bruce Willis is a father. He has three daughters with Demi Moore, of which Tallulah is one, and two daughters with his current wife, Emma Heming Willis. And I’d imagine it is the dream of any father of daughters to be there on the day that they walk down the aisle. Patients diagnosed with FTD can last quite a long time, especially if they receive the level of care that Willis seems to be getting from his loved ones. So I think the chances are good that he will be able to walk Tallulah Willis down the aisle, and be a part of her special celebration.

Which is wonderful, emotionally, for the actor we have seen gradually disappear from the public eye. The Willis daughters have done their part to keep the actor’s fans up to date on his condition, while also respecting the man’s right to privacy. If they had an award for the best Awards Speech – well, it would be self-indulgent. But still, I’d hand it to Demi Moore for the speech she gave following her victory at the 2025 Golden Globes for her spectacular and fearless performance in The Substance. Moore used her time at the podium to apply some of the film’s lessons regarding aging in the film industry to the idea of receiving an award, and got emotional as she spoke about a producer who once told her she’d merely be remembered as a “popcorn” actress, and not one worthy of acting an statue. As emotional as that was, I find that I’m overwhelmed now by the love and support Moore is receiving from her family, specifically the daughters she shares with the Hollywood legend, Bruce Willis.

Demi Moore has been incredibly vocal about how close she and her family members have become in the wake of Bruce Willis’s aphasia and FTD diagnosis, coming together during the holidays to lean on one another during difficult times. Sunday night, however, was focused on Moore, who played an aging actress tempted into trying a “get young quick” drug, then paying the price for her sins. Moore triumphed at the Golden Globes, and in an incredibly sweet Instagram reel, Scout Willis captured the moment her mother’s name was announced:

As with most awards pundits paying attention to the Golden Globes – for reasons not associated with the fashion, or the friendships – Scout’s sister Rumer posted her own IG story where she screamed her mom’s name out a bunch of times, and then shared the sentiment we all were thinking as she claimed this was the first step toward an eventual Oscar nomination for Demi Moore and The Substance.

It damn well better be. The strange thing about a movie like Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance is that it’s not typical Oscar bait. It’s hard-R genre filmmaking, with an unapologetically gross third act that’s necessary to convey the ultimate themes of the movie, but can make the film a tough recommendation for casual moviegoers. But it’s absolutely a ride that’s worth taking, particularly if you have a strong stomach, and an unusual sense of humor.

Statistically speaking, the Golden Globes aren't a great precursor to developments at the Academy Awards. The two voting bodies exist without overlap, and they frequently award different titles and individuals in the major categories. That being said, I find myself tonight keeping fingers crossed that there is correlation this year in the Best Actress field, as I very much want to see Demi Moore take home Hollywood's highest honor for her work in writer/director Coralie Fargeat's The Substance.

One of the best moments of the Golden Globes ceremony this evening saw Demi Moore called to the stage to receive significant recognition for her work in what the CinemaBlend staff voted to be the best film of 2024. Her turn is remarkable, and she explained in her acceptance speech that reading the script convinced her not to retire as an actor. Said Moore,

Demi Moore has been a star and a big name for decades, but she has never played a role quite like The Substance's Elizabeth Sparkle, and her performance is magnificent. Fired from her TV hosting job on her fiftieth birthday, the character can be described as a manifestation of all the self-loathing that society infects women with via ridiculous image standards, and the performance is filled with a perfect balance of rage and sadness.

The sequence when Elizabeth Sparkle can't get herself out of her apartment due to her paralyzing self-esteem issues alone earns her the trophy that she won tonight, and hopefully it will be joined on her proverbial mantle in a few months by an Oscar. (This year's show is scheduled for March 2.)

And not to be ignored or forgotten here is the burden of the special effects in her turn. The Substance is one of the boldest, most dazzling body horror films in recent memory, and whether she is birthing her younger, more "perfect" self out of her spine or suffering the effects of her counterpart abusing the titular program, Demi Moore's performance is extremely advanced and utterly brilliant.

If you didn't make the genius-level choice to watch/rewatch The Substance on New Year's Eve, it's most certainly not too late to watch what I personally found to be the best film of the 140 new releases I screened in 2024. As we enter a new year of upcoming horror movies, it’s going to be real hard for other releases to measure up to the violent images we’re still replaying in our heads from The Substance. The final scene of The Substance, that is still giving me legit nightmares, has the main character Elisabeth Sparkle hosting her own New Year’s Eve broadcast at the same time as she’s having a horrific reaction to a drug she’s been taking. The Substance follows Demi Moore as a famous actress who is kicked off her long-running aerobics TV show on the day of her 50th birthday. After getting into an accident, she is referred to an off-market drug called The Substance that will allow her to live life as her younger self every two weeks. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a bloody, queasy good time that also has so much to say about how detrimental the lack of self love can be on someone, especially when they let all the unrealistic societal expectations of beauty take over.

Considering most of us usually start the new year having “lose weight”, “eat healthier” or “exercise more” on our resolutions (seriously, Statista found 51 percent of U.S. adults penciled one of those in), The Substance is actually a genius movie to ring in the new year. Literally, if you're not careful. Plus, it starts the year with a unique bang…

With 2025 almost here, there’s a ton of upcoming horror movies we’re excited for, but it’s really going to be tough to top what’s going on with The Substance. Given these social media responses, it sounds like the movie starring Demi Moore could go down in history as a twisted New Year’s Eve tradition for some.

If you write about movies, you are going to be asked – often – what your favorite movie is. Or, people will ask you what the best movie you’ve seen is. Neither of these questions can be easy to answer, as people who worship film will tell you that they have far too many beloved movies to narrow it down to, and our opinions can shift depending on which way the wind blows. Which is why the annual creation of a Year End Top 10 list is a futile exercise. I might build one – as I did as part of CinemaBlend’s official ReelBlend podcast. But it’s a snapshot of a very specific time. That’s the list I made up on that day. I’m already annoyed, after publishing my list, that certain movies didn’t make the cut. I’m sure if I look at this list a year from now, I’ll disagree with the inclusion of three or four titles.

My number 1 movie of 2024 was never going to change, though. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it… and then stressed over who I actually could recommend it to. You see, Coralie Fargeat’s brilliant, cynical The Substance isn’t Mufasa, or Moana 2, or one of the safer movies that people want to hear more about when they are thinking about what to take the family to over the weekend. It’s a challenging, twisted, nauseating but hilarious film that’s tough to recommend, unless you have a specific sense of humor. It’s certainly not for everyone. But it definitely was for me.

The Substance is the smartest film I saw in 2024.

Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance is a contemporary parable that slices to the dark heart of the Hollywood hype machine, as well as the magnetic draw of the seven deadly sins. It boasts a simple premise, especially by science-fiction standards. Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) used to be adored and respected in the entertainment industry. Then, she committed the Cardinal Sin of growing “old.” When she’s offered a quick, but controversial, solution that allows her to live alternating weeks in the body of a younger specimen named Sue (Margaret Qualley), Elisabeth accepts… but lives to regret it.

As you have been hearing ever since The Substance made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, this film eviscerates the superficial entertainment industry, and holds up a mirror to the grotesque desires of Hollywood’s vapid denizens. Tick off the top Deadly Sins – Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Wrath – and you will witness them on display in both Elisabeth and Sue as they fight to maintain their hold on youth. You won’t believe the depths of depravity these characters are willing to plunge if it means a few more minutes of adoration from the empty vessels that are the audience. And every time they dug deeper into their “hole,” the more delicious I found their punishments.

And yet, there are genuine moments of heartbreak in The Substance, specifically for the emotionally damaged Elisabeth, that are conveyed through the Oscar worthy performance of Demi Moore. The more that she doubts herself – as when she caused herself to miss out on a dinner date with a kind gentleman – you realize that this is a broken individual, and no amount of “substance” is going to fulfill her desires. Qualley’s Sue is less humane. She beautifully embodies the arrogance of overconfidence. The actress is spot on as the unblemished side of this scarred coin.

The Substance is one of the most surprising movies of the year.

Even if you think you know where The Substance is heading, you won’t be able to predict the insane third act Coralie Fargeat has cooked up for Elisabeth and/or Sue. It’s a worthy, and biting, commentary on the shallowness of the traditional Hollywood starlet. And the further this movie flew off the rails, the harder I laughed at the intelligent, wicked, and wild lengths that Moore, Qualley and their director were willing to go to hammer home their point about the vicious cost of our vices

The precision of the sardonic comedy sliced so deep into my own dark heart, I genuinely had no idea where The Substance was going to decide how to end its story. And yet, Fargeat had the perfect ending image cooked up. And it had been teased from the opening moments. I should have seen it coming, and didn’t. So many movies follow a loose narrative formula, making modern films painfully predictable. The fact that The Substance kept me guessing right up until the final credits only makes me appreciate it all the more.

But I know not everyone wants to see a movie like The Substance. For one thing, it’s grotesque. Both in manner (Sue and Elisabeth do some truly wretched things), but also in appearance. Fargeat masters the art of body horror, drawing apt comparisons to David Cronenberg’s The Fly for the ways it commits to pushing the envelope. If you are squeamish, The Substance will turn you off. If you can make it through, its rewards and endless.

In years past, when building my Top 10 list, I went with safer picks for the top slot. One of the Spider-Verse movies usually grabbed the crown. Top Gun: Maverick landed their one year, or Steven Spielberg’s underappreciated The Post. Movies that you basically could recommend to anyone. This year, it felt wonderful – almost freeing – to select a movie like The Substance, which I knew wouldn’t appeal to everyone.

But if it’s your cup of tea, you won’t find anything more delicious in 2024.

The holidays are a special time, where we all try and shut out the day to day grind and make as much personal time as possible for family and friends. There are parties, and dinners, and social gatherings where we debate whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie. (For the record, it is, and anyone who thinks differently is silly.) Staying in the Die Hard realm, a lot of us are thinking about the cinematic icon Bruce Willis this holiday season, knowing the struggles that he and his very close family are facing due to his frontotemporal dementia diagnosis. But a source close to the family paints a rosy picture of their familial bond, and mentions how important the actor’s fans are to them in this difficult season.

Bruce Willis famously retired from acting back in 2022 due to him suffering from aphasia, a condition that affects a person’s ability to process words, their speech, and their ability to communicate. Once the actor called it quits on Hollywood, I wrote a book celebrating Willis’ illustrious film career, because I didn’t think that he got enough credit for his versatility, his comedic chops, and his dramatic heft in pictures such as Pulp Fiction or The Sixth Sense. As the aphasia diagnosis evolved into FTD, fans received a steady stream of updates on Willis’ condition thanks to his wife Emma Heming, his daughters, and his celebrity ex Demi Moore posting frequent notes to social media.

This Christmas, however, a source close to the family has revealed to InTouch Weekly that the extended Willis family is doing everything that they can to help the actor find joy in the season. The source says:

That should serve as a necessary reminder about what’s important during the holidays. Spending as much time as possible with loved ones, no matter their health status, is so important. This has been a difficult year for Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, and their extended families. And while he still looks fit for 69, it’s evident that the legendary performer is deteriorating, an unavoidable side effect of his dementia diagnosis. Many of us thrive on these updates, as we want to see Willis and his family healthy and happy. And this recent post on Thanksgiving from Willis and Moore’s daughter, Tallulah Willis, hit me directly in the heart thanks to a sign/placard the girls had their father hold.

“Best Dad Ever.” That’s the message on the sign that Bruce Willis is holding in this beautiful photo shared to Tallulah Willis’ Instagram. She accompanies the post with the simple message to readers: “Grateful.” And let me tell you: As someone who spent a magnificent and relaxing day on Thanksgiving this year with my college-age son who came home for the holiday, and my teenage son who’s on the college search, the emotion of that three-word sign has hit me a lot harder than I anticipated.

Bruce Willis is an icon. That hardly needs to be said. Fans can spend infinite amounts of time arguing over Bruce Willis’ best movies, and we love hearing stories from his famous directors about experiences they had on set for the filming of The Sixth Sense, Pulp Fiction, Armageddon, 12 Monkeys and, of course, Die Hard. Heck, it’s almost Christmas time, when you know some Willis fan is going to spark the ongoing debate over Die Hard’s status as a Christmas movie. But the current conversation on Willis has involved his health. In March 2022, Demi Moore announced on her own social media channels that Willis would be retiring from acting, thanks to a diagnosis of aphasia. This has led to Willis suffering from frontal temporal dementia, and has limited the actor’s life from that point forward. His family has kept his worldwide fans in the loop on his condition. But it’s the Thanksgiving message that has so many of them responding with heartfelt tears and appreciation.

Yes, Willis is an actor, and a massive Hollywood star. But what this photo reminds me is that he’s also – and more importantly, always – a father. And a husband. He is loved by his daughters, and cared for by his current wife, Emma Heming. The photos that they choose to share show the daily activity of a beloved family man, and we all can relate to that. It brings me real tears to see an icon of my childhood, and an actor I wrote a book about, fading from the spotlight. But when I see this gentle reminder that his family adores him, and considers him to be one of the greatest fathers on the planet, it inspires me to try harder, to keep fighting, and to live every single day to the fullest.

Critics raved about The Substance this fall when it hit the 2024 movie calendar, praising how Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley delivered its satirical message on aging, beauty and how women are generally viewed (as well as how they view themselves). The film even earned a perfect 5-star review from our own Eric Eisenberg. Our critic finds himself in the company of Kim Kardashian, who shared her takeaway from the film this weekend, but many are roasting the billionaire fashion and skin care entrepreneur for missing the point.

It seems Kim Kardashian got around to watching the body horror that will likely go down as one of the best of the year. She reportedly posted her opinion on Instagram Stories, which the movie’s X (Twitter) account shared, assuring fans via its caption that this was no joke:

You can’t make this stuff up, and people were quick to point out that not only has Kim Kardashian made a career out of promoting conventional beauty standards through her shapewear line SKIMS (a $4 billion business) and skin care products, but by commenting on Demi Moore’s appearance, she missed the entire point of the movie. Fans also thought it was funny that Kim Kardashian chose to share an image of Demi Moore from the beginning of the movie and wondered if she’d made it through to the nightmare fuel of an ending. And while, sure, she’s probably just trying to pay a compliment to one of her friends, the comment does kind of undermine the whole premise of the female-led horror movie. More reactions included:

I’m not the biggest fan of body horror films, but when I kept hearing that The Substance was one of the best and most unforgettable releases on the 2024 movie schedule, I said “What the Hell” and gave it a watch. And let me tell ya, I LOVED Coralie Fargeat’s satirical horror film and everything about Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley’s outstanding, Oscar-worthy performances. I won't be surprised if this makes it on our Best Horror Movies ranking in time.

The body horror was amazing in all the best ways, the satirical tone of the film was biting, to say the least, and the story about a woman going to great lengths to prevent her fading star from going out entirely all resonated with me. And while there are some truly grotesque and stomach-churning moments throughout one of the best horror movies in a long time, there’s one scene that disgusted me the most.

The Substance's Body Horror Had Me Sqirming In My Seat With My Hands Covering My Eyes

I should have taken the advice of one of my colleagues when they said we were not prepared for The Substance shortly before its release, because they were right and I was not ready for what was about to go down. And as others on the site have pointed out since then, some scenes will give you legit nightmares if they don’t make you lose your lunch first.

Multiple scenes involving both Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) and her younger double Sue (Margaret Qualley) had me squirming in my seat with hands covering my eyes like I was a three-year-old watching the It miniseries for the first time. All those visuals of infected wounds, the buckets of bloody messes of flesh and gore, and that bonkers final act had me both queasy and glad to be watching this before dinner, and not after..

But The Scene Where Harvey Is Devouring Shrimp Made Me Want To Barf

However, no scene in The Substance made me feel as gross or upset as the lunch sequence early on where Dennis Quaid’s Harvey, an absolute scene-stealer in all the best and worst ways, nonchalantly informs Elisabeth that she’s no longer needed after turning 50 years old.

The way Quaid’s hyperactive, sleazy, and hideous antagonistic TV executive rips, tears, chews, and slurps his way through a plate of shrimp (why so much butter?) while talking about audiences loving seeing someone fart on screen before beating around the bush is disgusting on so many levels. And then he just leaves Elisabeth with this mess when he abruptly jumps from the table after fumbling over his words. Yet the shrimp remains...remain.

I honestly love shrimp more than just about anything edible, and I have a habit of eating so much of those little crustaceans to the point of making myself sick. But that's the good kind of sick, and I may have to lay off the little suckers after watching this sequence of terrible events play out.

In Addition To Being Truly Disgusting, The Sloppy Lunch Scene Is One Of The Most Important Scenes

After watching The Substance, I stumbled upon a clip from the Toronto International Film Festival premiere where Demi Moore called the shrimp scene “the most violent of the movie,” and you know, I have to agree with her. Sure, we don’t see bodies coming out of other bodies, or buckets of blood, or anyone getting hurt (at least not physically), but because of what it represents.

The shrimp scene pretty much lets you know how the rest of the movie is going to go: the male-dominated entertainment industry takes its stars, chews them up, spits them out, and then moves on without a proper explanation or goodbye or anything. Instead, those on the receiving end are left with a big, greasy, disgusting mess (and most likely the bill). If not for this terrible lunch meeting, I don’t know how the rest of the movie would have played out.

Now that I’ve finally digested the shrimp scene and the rest of The Substance, I think I can finally move on from Coralie Fargeat’s rare body horror experience. But with more than a few promising upcoming horror movies, I think the next stomach-churning experience is right around the corner.

As someone whose horror fandom has been solidified for more than three decades — a horrific thought in and of itself — I’m not often thrown for a loop when watching anything genre-forward for the first time. And though I’ll maintain that mindset going into screenings of all the upcoming horror movies on the way, I’m happy to say writer-director Coralie Fargeat, along with stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, knocked me clean off my axis with The Substance (read our review).

Perhaps it should go without saying that SPOILERS ARE COMING, but just in case…

First, The Substance Is Just A Flat-Out Amazing Movie

Right away, I want to make it clear that I’m not implying The Substance is worthy of my attention and appreciation for only one or two personal reasons. That couldn’t be further from the truth, which is “this movie fucking rules.” Fargeat crafted a smart story about Hollywood’s age-related issues and phobias, directed it as if it was Requiem for a Dream on amphetamines instead of heroin, and showcased practical body horror effects that rival The Thing’s still-impressive titular monster.

I don’t even mean for those complimentary comparisons to seem belittling in any way. The Substance is absolutely its own beast; a cautionary tale slathered in satire that’s barely a degree or two beyond reality.

Demi Moore went outside her comfort zone to deliver a stunning and brazen performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a fitness celeb deemed to be past her prime, and whose desire to remain relevant in any way sends her down the dark road to black-market self-cloning. On the opposite end of the ageist spectrum, Margaret Qualley is also aces as “Sue,” who quickly usurps Elisabeth’s TV timeslot with her own highly sexualized approach to exercise, if only for a week at a time.

Even as the cinematography and editing remains colorful and poppy, The Substance drives home the dread as Elisabath and Sue — You Are One — lose sight of any shared goals. And all the gloriously gross physical horror that played out earlier in the film is taken to logical extremes by the end, leading to one of cinema’s most nightmarish creatures: Elisasue. I couldn’t have predicted how bonkers this movie gets, and am all the more pleased for it.

The Unique Experience I Had Watching The Substance

As it no doubt goes with many (or even most) horror movie fanatics, I often put myself in main characters' shoes and headspaces, wondering how I would react and behave during such high-stress and potentially fatal situations. Even if I don't mean to or consciously want to vicariously live as a victim or final girl until the credits role, it still happens every single time.

Would I also attempt to just avoid sleep entirely on Elm Street? Could I convincingly make other townspeople believe my claims about local legends? Would I fuck around and find out with a LeMarchand's box?

I was admittedly already buying into the idea of sympathizing with Elisabeth's headspace before the movie even started, simply from the standpoint as someone who fully grasps the woes of aging and the desire to reclaim some of that verve. I don't need to be a gorgeous celebrity to feel that. And for a short stretch of The Substance's runtime, I was aligned with her all the way.

Then the actual Substance itself was introduced, in all of its mysterious science-defying glory. And then it became abundantly clear what Elisabeth would have to do in order to maintain the abstract duality of sharing an existence with her younger form, and the "What Would I Do?" part of my brain just completely shut off. If anything, it was perhaps replaced by the sporadic notion of "I would never..." Which I suppose stems from the realization that I'm too lazy to achieve this kind of perfection.

First, Elisabeth has to pick her packages up on a regular basis from a highly questionable location with a metal door that doesn't even open all the way. Sure, it's compatible with other minor inconveniences, but having to get all the refills every couple of weeks would be a grind, especially if I'm having to worry about half of my current body turning to shit because my younger version is yoinking all my spinal fluids.

Second, I'd be nowhere near as instantly skillful with needles and IVs like Elisabeth was as soon as she opened her first package. It'd take me a bit to get the process down fully, and by that point, I'd likely be working with multiple concussions suffered from hitting my head on the floor, toilet, etc. each time the switch happened.

Even if I was good at that part of it immediately, I still already know how quickly I'd lose track of proper scheduling patterns. Because there would be an inherent dread involved with all the injections and seeing the other me on the ground, so I could fully understand why Elisabeth just started sitting in her living room and watching TV a lot more during her weeks.

Third, no part of me would willfully do anything that would put me back under the professional wrangling of Dennis Quaid's sweatstain of a human, Harvey. I still don't quite understand why Elisabeth and/or Sue kept working with Harvey instead of finding a new outlet, but I guess it's easier to stick with what you know when you're inside a completely different body.

And then fourth, I'm really not into the idea of giving birth from my spinal column, which isn't exactly what happens in The Substance, but it's close enough to make me squirm where I currently sit. I already have enough back problems as it is, I don't need another version of myself making things worse.

So even beyond all my initial reasons for thinking The Substance is awesome, I also have to give Coralie Fargeat all the credit in the world for silencing a part of my brain that so often speaks loudest when I'm in horror movie mode, regardless of the film's quality.

Now if The Substance was delivered to my house and came in pill form? That's a different story altogether.

Demi Moore has been the center of attention lately for being in one of the buzziest 2024 movies, The Substance. Considering the acclaimed horror movie has Moore playing an aging Hollywood actress dealing with the pitfalls of beauty standards, she's been talking about her own experiences over the years. One moment from her career that she’s been reflecting about is the bikini scene in 2003’s Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, which she filmed at 40. Her latest comments on the role dive deeper into how the public often perceives women after their 20s and 30s.

When Demi Moore starred alongside Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore in the Charlie’s Angels sequel, she had the chance to play one of the best female villains in film history, Madison Lee. As Moore recalled in an interview with Elle, she wasn’t expecting it to cause so much chatter. In her words:

The Ghost star looked absolutely stunning and completely toned when she appeared in a bikini for a Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle sequence on a beach. As the actress spoke to, at the time baring skin as she turned 40 led to a lot of conversation about that scene in particular and it led her to question her place in Hollywood. Not too long ago, the star shared additional thoughts on the hoopla surrounding her Full Throttle scene and how it had her feeling like she “didn’t belong” at the time.

Along with opening up about her experience working on the film, Demi Moore spoke on how she thinks women are perceived nowadays. As she continued:

Moore was absolutely pushed out of her comfort zone for The Substance, as the role required her to take part in nude sequences alongside Margaret Qualley to tell the movie’s intense message about the pitfalls of society’s harsh body standards on women. The actress plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a former movie star, who gets kicked off her aerobics TV show on her 50th birthday. When she learns about a new black market drug called “The Substance,” which will allow her to be young again every other week, she only slips further into her own self loathing over her aging.

Directed by Coralie Fargeat, the creepy flick is absolutely one of the best horror movies to come out of recent years, based on what critics are saying about Moore's film as well as the audience reactions. Considering the Scarlet Letter actress' own experiences with Hollywood and talk about her body as she ages, undoubtedly the movie spoke to her in deep ways.

But, all of that aside, good on Demi Moore for being real about the buzz that surrounded her Charlie's Angels scene, which is just downright stunning. You can rent or buy the film on Amazon, while The Substance can be streamed on Mubi now.

After Janelle Monáe decided to dress up as E.T. and Halle Bailey paid tribute to Halle Berry’s Bond Girl bikini look, Kylie Jenner looked to Demi Moore’s 1996 Striptease as a chance to wear her birthday suit for the holiday.

Why dress up when you can dress way down? Kylie Jenner recreated the iconic Striptease poster, and Demi Moore took notice on Instagram. Check it out:

On Halloween afternoon, Kylie Jenner took to her Instagram to share her costume and it’s an awesome tribute. The above image resulted in Moore sharing the photo and commenting “love this!!” to show support for the reality star's Halloween choice.

Moore then reshared the original poster as Jenner had with the words “nailed it.”

The '90s movie follows a former FBI secretary who starts working as a stripper after she loses custody of her 7-year-old daughter. At the time, Demi Moore made history by earning $12.5 million to star in Striptease, which made her the highest-paid film actress at the time. However, it was panned by critics and wasn’t particularly a box office hit.

While it may be underrated, it’s certainly iconic. And Jenner reiterated that as she also recreated one scene from the movie with the following photo of herself in a gold bikini:

Her Striptease tribute is the second Halloween costume of her's this year. A day ago, Jenner also shared photos of herself as Barbarella, which is set to be remade with Sydney Sweeney. So, this year, Kylie Jenner was definitely ready to channel sex symbols in movie history, and she did so with some stunning photos.

It’s a particularly great time to pay tribute to Demi Moore, given she made one of the best horror movies of the year, The Substance. The film, which follows Moore as an aging actress, had critics raving, including through our own The Substance review, which gave it a perfect five stars. We’ve also been talking about the visceral self-love message the new Demi Moore movie has, so why not take a moment to pay homage to one of her other big roles from nearly 30 years ago?

Some SPOILERS are ahead for The Substance.

I’m perfectly happy walking out of a movie theater with a smug smile on my face after enjoying a fun little escape out of the corners of my reality to a dark room with a group of strangers. But, every once in a while, a film like The Substance comes along (one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in a while) and I leave a movie theater feeling like the projected images I spent time with left my skin violently sunburnt, and I walk to my car in quiet contemplation of what I just witnessed. I don’t want every trip to the movies to feel like this, but when it happens, I sure remember and treasure the power of movies more.

The body horror movie was given a perfect five-star score in CinemaBlend’s The Substance review, and has been praised by tons of critics, but, it is a lot to stomach. It’s not one I’d readily recommend given its intense nature. Heck, I even thought about walking out at a couple of points, and definitely covered my face in fear. I can only compare my experience of watching The Substance to other intensity found in the insane twist ending in Midsommar or the many feelings I had about Bones And All. But, at the same time, it’s a lot more than blood and guts, or the nudity it has gone viral for. It has a really powerful message to tell about self love that I truly am going to take with me for a long time. I still get chills when I think about it, and now that I’m no longer in the movie’s vicious embrace, I can say I’m happy I went to see it for what I took away about self love.

The Substance Tackles Fear Of Aging With A Powerful Concept

The Substance caught my attention immediately as it follows Demi Moore’s Elisabeth Sparkle, a celebrated Hollywood star and lead of a long-running aerobics show. In a very literal move by the film, Moore gets dismissed from her job on her 50th birthday and learns that she will be replaced with a younger talent. But, then she learns about a black market drug called “The Substance” that will allow her to be young every other week. She orders the mysterious drug, and transforms to Margaret Qualley’s Sue every other week, swapping being conscious in her own body and giving it up for Sue's perfect young body. Sue gets the job to replace Elisabeth as the newly-retired star becomes a secondary character in her own life, spending her week in her body droning in front of the TV and eating a ridiculous amount of food. It only gets worse from there.

I found this setup to be very powerful in and of itself because it illustrates through its concept how easy it can be for someone like Moore’s Elisabeth can place their energy on what they were in their younger years rather than living in the present. We place so much emphasis and value on young women and their bodies, and I’ve seen firsthand women in the age bracket of Elisabeth subtly demean their present selves and glorify the days when they were 20-somethings. It almost feels like human nature that we will mourn what’s thought of as the most beautiful version of ourselves we can be. But wow, did watching The Substance make me acutely aware of how that mindset comes at the expense of betraying ourselves, especially through its visual concept.

But, At No Point In The Substance Did I Prefer Sue

As writer/director Coralie Fargeat powerfully achieved with The Substance, at no point in the movie did I want Elisabeth Sparkle to be Sue instead of herself. While I could understand that Elisabeth was not comfortable with her body and felt like a cast aside figure of Hollywood yesteryear, I wanted to watch her move forward with her next chapter in her original body way more -- see her go on the date she gets invited to early in the film and see her embrace the beauty I saw in her.

Of course, as horror movies go, Elisabeth Sparkle doesn’t get the happy-go-lucky middle aged coming-of-age arc I wanted to see. I instead watched her give up her time and her body for a younger version of herself. I kept saying to myself… Why does she want to live those early years again? Why does she care so much about being perfect, when she is already magnificently beautiful, now? This is a really intense way to treat yourself. Sure, being younger meant less worry lines, but earning those is such a privilege.

It’s Demi Moore… she’s gorgeous and iconic, obviously. Why doesn't she see that? This element of the movie made me look further into my own inner monologue and how I can have empathy and appreciation for others' beauty, and can find myself being more critical of my own. It’s easy when we look in the mirror at ourselves everyday, but goodness me, did The Substance communicate the violence of not treating one’s self image with care with a sharp syringe full of green goo as it moves into its body in the horrific second half.

The Substance Reminded Me About How Vital Self Love Is

I also got intrigued by my reaction to The Substance because I am in my twenties right now, and I could relate to Demi Moore’s character a lot more than I expected too. It made me step back and realize that honestly, I think I would have related to her earlier in my twenties and as a teen, too. All women will probably relate to Elisabeth Sparkle, because no matter one’s age or beauty, we’re constantly fed that we’ll never be enough. Margaret Qualley’s Sue is the ideal – she is not real or sustainable. She’s a picture perfect social media, photoshopped magazine concept that is summoned through Elisabeth hating herself as she is. And, that was heartbreaking to me, because it’s so easy for women to look through one’s own beauty and aspire to this broken ideal. Pretty early in the film, I wanted to hug my beautiful body and take back any mean words that’d ever floated in my head about it, because the ideal is not as pretty as what’s real and true.

As The Substance so beautifully and viscerally showcases, the ideal that is Sue is also created and sustained at the expense of Elisabeth’s own self love. As the movie intensely and literally shows its concept as the plot moves forward into its body horror insanity, Sue starts taking away from the beauty of Elisabeth in order to exist and survive, and I was shuddering at the results. (This is when the movie really goes there!) I won’t get into specifics of the final act, but I was intrigued that by the end of The Substance Elisabeth does come to want to have her own face, but in the most depressing and nightmarish way possible.

Oddly enough, I’m going to look in the mirror with more kindness after The Substance, and it’s rare for a movie that’s also so campy, gory and ridiculous to inspire that. I’m not sure how any upcoming horror movies are going to top this one for these reasons.

Just when you thought the last time you’d ever see The Brat Pack again was in the 1990 rom-com Betsy’s Wedding, many former teen actors that made up ‘80s yuppie culture reunited in Andrew McCarthy’s Brats documentary. The 2024 movie release did a great job showing how being part of the coolest group of the ‘80s impacted their careers and their lives. After the success that Brats had, Rob Lowe and Demi Moore are actively trying to get another Brat Pack reunion underfoot and I want this to happen so much!

St. Elmo’s Fire gave audiences a different type of coming-of-age story. Instead of seeing a typical teen ‘80s film about high school life, we’re introduced to a group of recent college grads adjusting to post-university life. It’s been almost 40 years since the coming-of-age movie, and yet the Hulu documentary Brats reminded us how much we want The Brat Pack together again.

Well, Deadline gave us some good news that two Brat Pack members, Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, are actively trying to make this happen with a possible St. Elmo’s Fire sequel. The Parks and Recreation actor spoke on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast about recent updates of the upcoming movie and I’m so psyched for it:

That’s really exciting to know that everyone is on board for the new movie. It wouldn’t be a faithful sequel without all of the amazingly talented cast like Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Andrew McCarthy, Mare Winningham, and more. Now that St. Elmo’s Fire showed us what the group of friends have been up to since graduating college, it would be great to see how they all adjusted to careers, marriage, parenthood, and the like while in their ‘60s. Hopefully this time around, Demi Moore doesn’t have to go through scenes like the St. Elmo’s Fire cringeworthy moment when her character, Jules, tries to freeze herself in an empty apartment. The second time around, I’d like to believe she’d like the windows closed, please.

Children of the ‘80s are sure to get together to see a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel so they can relive the glory days of seeing The Brat Pack on the big screen again. Rob Lowe spoke about what we could look forward to seeing in the potential sequel:

It looks like a possible St. Elmo’s Fire sequel seeks to explore the realistic life experiences that can happen when you reach your ‘60s. Audiences that grew up during the ‘80s will resonate with those powerful themes and younger generations today can know what to expect when reaching the golden years.

I’d like to believe that it was through the success of Brats that a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel is being talked about right now. It holds a critics’ score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and 60% from audiences which means it was loved by critics those with a Hulu subscription. The documentary can easily open viewers’ eyes to things they didn’t know about The Brat Pack like how some actors weren’t fond of the coined term and didn’t keep in touch with each other much after filming their movies. But with Brats being appreciated for its dose of nostalgia and its cultural impact, seeing everyone reunite again would show audiences The Brat Pack doesn’t die.

Even though a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel is still in the talking stages thanks in part to Rob Lowe and Demi Moore, it still makes me very excited about the idea of seeing actors who dominated ‘80s movies come together again. As Lowe mentioned Brats “only added to the excitement around” St. Elmo’s Fire and its sequel, it proves the streaming documentary was a nostalgic reminder to celebrate cherished movies no matter how long ago they came out and that it’s never too late to reunite for one last movie. Writer/director Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance is a relatively simple movie in some respects, with its high concept plot and limited number of settings, but in addition to being rich with metaphor, it’s a film that demanded a great deal from stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. On top of the emotional extremes experienced by the characters, there are also physical extremes, with both actors doing nude scenes and working with complicated body horror prosthetics.

Given these complicated aspects in bringing protagonists Elisabeth Sparkle and Sue to life, Coralie Fargeat maintained very open communication with the stars – and she spoke about that relationship when I interviewed her virtually earlier this month prior to the arrival of The Substance in theaters.

Coralie Fargeat Was Quick To Illustrate Her Vision For The Substance

One of my early questions was about the discussions she had with Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley after they respectively had the chance to read the script, and she first noted her emphasis on her aesthetic vision and heavy use of symbolism. Said the French filmmaker,

In The Substance, Demi Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle – a Hollywood star who is unceremoniously fired from her job hosting an aerobics program on her 50th birthday. Her emotional distress leads to a car accident, but her visit to the doctor leads her to learn about the titular procedure: a medical invention that allows her to “birth” a younger, better version of herself. Sue (Margaret Qualley) emerges from Elisabeth’s spine after she takes the special Activator substance, but a failure for the two women to recognize that they are one and respect the balance leads to extreme consequences.

With Coralie Fargeat’s style, there’s only so much that Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley could understand about The Substance by just reading the script, and the writer/director was prepared to illustrate for them what was in her mind:

I followed up by asking about the physical requirements of bringing Elizabeth and Sue to life, and Coralie Fargeat stressed the magnitude of open discussions with her actors to discuss the most extreme aspects of The Substance. Both roles see Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley performing sans clothing, and in addition to being up front about how the scenes in question would be shot, she also explained their significance in the work’s visual language:

Continuing, Fargeat explained said that there were similar discussions about the film’s prosthetics. Without getting into spoilers, both Elizabeth and Sue go through some terrifying metamorphoses in The Substance, and that required the actors to spend a great deal of time in the makeup chair and mentally process the stories of their characters out of sequence:

Both Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley were ultimately very giving as they embraced the glamour and horror of their parts in the context of The Substance’s commentary about age and beauty standards for modern women.

When it comes to upcoming horror movies, one of this year’s best may be hitting theaters this weekend, with Demi Moore’s body horror flick The Substance causing quite a stir amongst critics since its premiere at Cannes. The actress bares it all in the movie, but Moore says it’s not about the nudity. In fact, The Substance’s trailer seems to show that we’re in for a sexy and disturbing masterpiece of sorts. But what are the critics saying? The experts are weighing in ahead of the film’s September 20 release on the 2024 movie calendar, so let’s allow them to tell us what we’re in for.

Starring alongside Demi Moore is Margaret Qualley, as the women play two sides of the same aerobics instructor. Moore is a recently fired 50-year-old named Elisabeth Sparkle, who begins injecting herself with a serum to create a younger, more perfect version of herself called Sue (Qualley). Obviously things won’t go as expected, but no need to spoil any plot here. Let’s get to the critics, with our own Eric Eisenberg saying in the CinemaBlend review of The Substance that this “engrossing, horrifying, hilarious and wild” experience is a must-see for anyone who can stomach it. He gives it a perfect 5 out of 5 stars and writes:

James Mottram of GamesRadar gives the film 4 out of 5 stars, saying that Demi Moore, specifically, shines in what is possibly a career-best performance with plenty to say and “fountains” of blood. In Mottram’s words:

David Ehrlich of IndieWire has all the adjectives when describing this “go-until-you-gag epic,” saying that anyone with the stomach to sit through this “audacious, insanely gross” movie will enjoy one the most sickly entertaining theatrical experiences of the year. The critic gives it an A-, and continues:

Bill Goodykoontz of the Arizona Republic also calls it one of the best movies of the year, as he lauds Demi Moore’s fearless performance and writer/director Coralie Fargeat's accomplishment in making something that’s “hard to watch, impossible to turn away from.” The critic rates it 4.5 out of 5 stars, writing:

Meanwhile, Slate’s Dana Stevens went into The Substance game for the feminist horror and commentary on aging and beauty. However, after the 140-minute runtime, Stevens seemingly felt beaten over the head with the same message over and over in increasingly raunchy fashion. In the critic’s words:

The majority of the feedback has been positive, as The Substance is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a current 89% from nearly 150 critics’ opinions. The core themes of writer/director Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance are not complex or hard to decipher. There is a cruelty in the world’s beauty standards for women, with multiple industries profiting off of that cruelty, and the film is an extreme satire exploring that reality. That straightforwardness also extends into in the minimalist scope and aesthetic, as there are really only three principal scene locations, and there is a heavy lean into symbolism leaving the broader details of the world vague.

There is an on-paper simplicity to the movie – but that’s not a proper reflection of what is one of the most audacious, engrossing, horrifying, hilarious and wild cinematic experiences of the year.

It’s difficult to sum up The Substance because it is so deeply satisfying. Its feminist rage is rich and palpable, the story putting a body horror, female-centric spin on The Portrait Of Dorian Gray. But it’s also an exceptional execution of craft – a reference to both the phenomenal performances by stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, as well as the stunning and disgusting special effects work. It’s intoxicating, riotous and, to date, the best film of 2024.

Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle – an Oscar-winning actress and TV personality who is instantly deemed over-the-hill on her 50th birthday and fired as the host of her daytime aerobics program. Her distraught state in the aftermath leads to a car accident, and when she goes to the doctor, a nurse (Robin Greer) checks her out and slips her information about a special procedure called The Substance.

Following the injection of a neon green activation serum, the users literally experience the emergence of a younger, perfect version of themselves. This new version identifies herself as Sue (Margaret Qualley), but there’s an important trade-off: Elisabeth and Sue must live in balance, with one awake and conscious for seven days while the other is comatose and taking food intravenously.

The problem, of course, is that there isn’t an equal balance. While Sue is hired as Elisabeth’s replacement by Harvey (Dennis Quaid), the revolting misogynist who fired her progenitor, and lives the glamorous life afforded to her by her youth and beauty, Elisabeth spends her waking days isolated from the world in her spacious apartment growing evermore resentful. Feeling entitled, Sue starts stealing extra time from her other half, and it winds up having grotesque consequences.

The Substance overflows with brilliant, disgusting, and hilarious body horror.

The Substance is an awesome accomplishment of design, from the clinical-yet-do-it-yourself instructions of the titular procedure, to all of its aspects of artful escalation. The latter is an essential quality in body horror, as the ugly and terrible always has to get worse and worse, and Coralie Fargeat’s understanding of this yields genius results. The filmmaker prepares your palette early with repulsive close-ups of Harvey’s mouth as he sucks down cream sauce-slathered shrimp while firing Elisabeth, and your stomach will get turning as the protagonist writhes naked on her titled bathroom floor, her back violently splitting open to allow Sue’s “birth.” But that’s merely the opening salvo of the insanity.

Sue’s body requires daily injections of a spinal fluid from Elisabeth in order to stabilize (movie-goers with needle-based fears be warned now), and as extracting extra doses for additional time takes a terrible toll on the fluid’s source, The Substance gets more and more horrifically hypnotizing. Elisabeth is driven to seclusion early on in the story as a result of society crushing every atom of her self-esteem, but that’s further compounded by her monstrous transformation (and it’s psychologically fascinating to witness her inability to terminate the program). You will discover new physical limits for your mandible as you witness the deterioration of her body, starting with her hand, but constantly getting more terrible.

In perfect contrast to the ugly, rotting life of Elisabeth is the dazzling existence of Sue – full of the brightest of bright lights, the tightest of tight dresses and aerobic costumes, and the constant attention of the camera lens. It’s so gratuitously sexy that it becomes hilarious, and threading that particular needle simultaneously with the over-the-top body horror is the core of what makes the film so special. It compels you to sweat, vomit and laugh, which is a magical tonal achievement.

The Substance is all about showing instead of telling, and while that ultimately proves to be exceptionally demanding for the film’s stars, both Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are magnificent. Beyond the intense physicality for both actors – including bold nudity and metamorphosis – they are what set the stakes and attitude.

In Moore’s case, what’s most impressive is her emotional range. You can practically see the tar of anger boiling inside her as she stares out her apartment’s floor-to-ceiling windows at a giant billboard for Sue’s show and watches her younger, perfect self giggle while being interviewed on a talk show – but that fury is counterbalanced by a staggering fragility. The world has stolen all of her confidence, and you empathize with her deeply as she does battle with herself trying to get ready after she summons up the courage to go on a date.

Qualley’s assignment has a wholly different energy, but it’s no less outstanding. While Elisabeth is deficient in self-confidence, Sue is the embodiment of it, and the young actress exudes infinite charisma and sex appeal just batting her eyelashes. Her dynamism – enhanced by her shimmering world – has impactful side-effects, however, as her perfection emotionally evolves into entitlement, putting her at war with her other half. Where that eventually goes… takes us too far into spoiler territory in this venue.

I don’t have a set list of positive qualities I look for when seeing any new movie, but I will always appreciation the combination of smart, funny, and fucked up, and that’s what The Substance delivers in its 140 minute runtime. In an era that is seeing growing broad appreciation for great original horror, Coralie Fargeat’s second feature film is a standout success and a must-see for anyone who can stomach it.

What do Demi Moore and Halle Berry have in common? They are two incredible leading ladies who are starring in upcoming horror movies this September and got shiny for their glitzy movie premieres. After seeing them show up in gorgeous metallic gowns for their big moments on the same evening, I’m starting to think it should become the next big red carpet trend.

Let’s start with Demi Moore’s ruby red dress. Since the actress stars in a bloody thriller that is all about shattering beauty standards and actually got Cannes longest standing ovation of 2024, the gown fit right on theme. Check it out:

The metallic red shapes have silver studs all over them and a black border that really makes this a bold and beautiful look. The shapes on the 2025 Oscar de la Renta dress resemble the petals of red roses as well. Moore seriously rocked this metallic look with her long black hair that complemented the dress’s color palette. On the same evening in New York City, Halle Berry celebrated the premiere of her new movie Never Let Go in a golden crystal mesh gown featuring metallics as well. The design from Tamara Ralph has a halter top that resembles a chain and really brought a top of sparkle to the carpet. Take a look:

Berry’s movie has received varying thoughts from critics ahead of it hitting theaters on the same day as The Substance. CinemaBlend’s own Never Let Go review gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars, with Eric Eisenberg saying that Berry’s “dedicated performance” helps provide one of the “substantial sources of scary” in the horror flick. Isn’t it interesting that both actresses would opt for something metallic for their horror movie premieres?

The coincidence might not matter as much if they didn’t both absolutely crush their looks, but they absolutely did, and it has me hoping this isn’t the last time metallic takes over a viral red carpet look. While metallic isn’t as everywhere like the sheer dress trend or how big method dressing is right now, it has been seen a few times in the past year.

Remember when Zendaya looked like C-3PO while on the Dune 2 press tour? That was a bold and flashy, yet memorable red carpet look earlier in the year. During this year’s Grammys, both Megan Fox and Miley Cyrus also rocked metal dresses. While metal is certainly not the easiest trend to nail (or probably wear), it makes these famous women look absolutely regal, and I hope to see it more this fall.
