Chicago Fire has already gone through many changes in Season 14, and there's still nearly half of the season left to go in the 2026 TV schedule. After Firehouse 51 lost both Carver and Ritter from the ranks of first responders, Mouch was then cut from the crew and transferred to another house. Stella's break was fortunately short, but Dermot Mulroney is on his way out as Chief Pascal. I wasn't too surprised by the news in light of recent developments for Severide, but One Chicago is adding a new character played by somebody Stranger Things fans will recognize.

Pascal's last episode for the foreseeable future will be Episode 14, according to Deadline, which at least indicates that he'll be in the mix for the crossover event involving a passenger jet in early March. Due to NBC's upcoming One Chicago break while the 2026 Winter Olympics take over much of primetime in February, that means Pascal will make it into March, but his future any further down the line is uncertain. The break will reportedly last until the end of Season 14, with the possibility of him returning before the final credits roll on the season.

While Chicago Fire cast members have skipped episodes here and there in recent seasons, this seems to be a much more substantial separation for Dermot Mulroney as Chief Pascal. The hiatus is said to be part of the character's story, so fans likely don't have to worry that Pascal will abruptly be gone with no explanation starting in Episode 15. (His replacement will arrive in the sixteenth episode.)

I wasn't shocked when I first saw the news of Mulroney being written out of Fire for at least a little bit, since it seemed like a development in service of Severide taking more of an administrative leadership role, which could have been good for him in light of the emotional breakthrough with Stella. As it turns out, however, Pascal isn't going to be MIA so that Severide can step up in his absence, because Chicago Fire cast a Stranger Things star to fill that hole at 51 rather than going a more expected route with the Squad lieutenant.

Rob Morgan has accumulated so many credits over the years of his career that you'd likely recognize his face as Battalion Chief Hopkins in Chicago Fire even if you didn't know his name. My personal favorite one of his roles in recent years was as Officer-turned-Chief Powell on Stranger Things. His character's fate on the Netflix juggernaut was unknown as of the end of Season 5, with somebody else taking on the job of Police Chief in Hawkins, but fans will soon get to see the actor play another kind of first responder.

Per the outlet, Morgan will recur as Battalion Chief Hopkins, who comes to 51 with a haunted past from overseeing a number of other firehouses in the Windy City. He's not one to waste time in asserting his authority, which may not make him the most welcome addition to the firehouse family.

I'd love if this is used as an excuse to bring Boden back briefly to shed some light on Hopkins, or maybe for Mouch to turn up with any details about Hopkins that he learned through the grapevine at his new house. That said, Rob Morgan's arrival in Episode 16 comes with only five episodes left in the season, so he won't have much time at 51. He'll appear in four, including the Season 14 finale.

Fans have plenty of time to theorize, with Episode 16 presumably not airing until mid-to-late March. In the meantime, you can always revisit some of Chief Pascal's highlights opposite Severide with earlier episodes of Chicago Fire available streaming with a Peacock subscription. There are also still a couple of weeks left before the Olympics, so keep tuning in to NBC on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET for the latest from Firehouse 51, between Chicago Med at 8 p.m. ET and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET.

Spoiler alert! This story will reveal spoilers about the 2005 movie The Family Stone, which is available to stream with a Prime Video subscription or Hulu subscription.

Families coming together for the holidays make for such a good starting off point for so many stories — including several on the 2025 Christmas movie schedule — especially if there’s a twist involved, like introducing your partner to your family. The 2005 flick The Family Stone offered a brilliantly heightened look into such a situation, and I was so excited to find out a sequel is in the works. To that end, there is one thing I’d love from The Family Stone 2, but also, I have a big concern.

The Family Stone featured an ensemble cast of impressive names like Sarah Jessica Parker, Craig T. Nelson, Claire Danes and, of course, Diane Keaton. Still, this one doesn’t find its way onto everybody’s list of favorite Christmas films. The titular Stones are an admittedly flawed bunch, and on top of having characters who are hard to like, this one is practically guaranteed to make you cry.

I get it, I understand every argument against it, and you’ll just never make me hate it. Before I get into my hopes and fears, though, let’s look at what we know about the upcoming sequel.

The Family Stone 2 Is In The Works Following Diane Keaton’s Death

We’re going to get into spoiler territory here, so turn back now if you aren’t aware of how the 2005 Christmas movie plays out. The Family Stone is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and following Diane Keaton’s death in October at age 79, writer-director Thomas Bezucha revealed to CNN that he’d already been thinking of catching up with the Stones.

While The Family Stone centers around Everett (Dermot Mulroney) introducing his uptight girlfriend Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) to his judgmental family, the story takes a twist when the Stone children catch onto the fact that their mother Sybil has been diagnosed with a terminal illness (the implication is a recurrence of breast cancer).

Diane Keaton’s death made Thomas Bezucha want to “honor her even more,” with a sequel, despite the fact that it plagued him. He said:

The Family Stone 2 has not officially been green-lit, and none of the ensemble cast has officially signed on, but Thomas Bezucha said he has spoken to everyone and received unanimously positive responses. (Craig T. Nelson and Dermot Mulroney have both acknowledged the project.) The director also said he was only interested in doing the sequel if he could get the original cast back, so we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes on this one.

I’d Love For The Sequel To Feature Another Introduction To The Stone Family

When Everett brought Meredith home to meet the family two decades ago, the next generation of Stones had already begun to form. Susannah (Elizabeth Reaser) was pregnant with her second child, and by the end of the movie, Thad and Patrick (Tyrone Giordano and Brian J. White, respectively) had adopted a son. I think it would be fun to see one of the Stone’s next generation — who would now theoretically be in their 20s — bring home a partner to meet the family.

In addition to the above couples, The Family Stone also saw Everett winding up with Meredith’s sister Julie (Claire Danes), Meredith getting together with Everett’s brother Ben (Luke Wilson), and Amy (in one of Rachel McAdams’ best roles) reconnecting with Brad (Paul Schneider). Any one of these couples could have borne children who could carry out the nod to the plot of the original film.

But here’s the twist: Maybe this time the family members aren’t quite such assholes? Perhaps Sybil’s death has softened them, or Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) has won them over with his “generosity of spirit” mantra that exactly zero of them abided by back in 2005. Here’s my big issue with that idea, though.

I’m Worried Making The Stones Likeable Would Reflect Badly On Diane Keaton’s Character

There’s no doubt in my mind that should The Family Stone 2 actually come to fruition, it will and should be a tribute to Diane Keaton. However, what happens when the Stone family members realize that Sybil was the problem all along? The ending of the first movie even takes a step in that direction, showing a much softer side to all of the family members as they gather for their first holiday without the matriarch.

If we’re being honest, I do believe Sybil Stone was the instigator, and it was an absolute treat to watch Diane Keaton portray this deliciously petty, overbearing, passive-aggressive mother. She mocked Meredith to her face for trying to be polite, she talked openly about Amy’s sex life despite her daughter’s protests and she facilitated pretty much all of the toxic behavior happening at the Stone family Christmas.

(However, I will never fault her for defending Thad and Patrick during one of the most awkward family dinners ever on screen, even if there was probably a better way to handle it. Protect these men at all costs.)

So regardless of whether or not a new person is being introduced to the Stone family in the sequel, I don’t know how you solve this conundrum: Either the family is still illogically mean and unlikeable, or they’ve turned into pleasant people now that Sybil has passed on and is no longer around to encourage the bad behavior. And what kind of tribute to Diane Keaton would that be?

Either way, it’s going to be admittedly difficult to see the Stones reunite without Sybil — the final scene of The Family Stone was already difficult — and I imagine Diane Keaton’s presence will be missed in every scene. Still, even knowing this, and with the concern I talked out above, I’m really hoping The Family Stone 2 comes together.

The 2005 film is available to stream on Prime Video and Hulu, if you’d like to relive the Stone holiday drama. It really can put your own family get-togethers into perspective, and some people say it’s better the second time around anyway!

Dermot Mulroney has enjoyed an impressive career, both in movies (from ‘90s kids classics like Angels in the Outfield to more modern rom-coms like Anyone but You) and on TV (where he’s looking good in that chief’s uniform as Chicago Fire airs on the 2025 TV schedule). But, when it comes to the roles he’s most recognized for, Mulroney mentioned his guest role on Friends, which is funny considering two of his biggest movies involved Friends actors.

Dermot Mulroney Gets Recognized As Gavin From Friends

Friends boasted some A+ guest stars during its 10-year run, with Dermot Mulroney getting a three-episode arc in Season 9 as Gavin Mitchell. Gavin stepped in for Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) while she was on maternity leave, and in fighting to get her job back, Rachel ends up developing feelings for him. (Wow, that plot's not problematic at all.) Mulroney visited The Jennifer Hudson Show, where he talked about appearing on one of the best sitcoms of all time, saying:

Dermot Mulroney is definitely speaking my language with those Friends rewatches (all 10 seasons can be streamed with a Max subscription), and he joked that the three best episodes were the ones he was in, naturally.

The role was certainly a fun one, with Gavin being such an antagonist for Rachel (and then Ross, when he saw them kissing on the balcony), and it’s kind of funny that so many people held onto that role. The actor continued:

I honestly can’t imagine what it would feel like to have a stranger randomly yell at me (even in a positive way) for something I did at work 20 years ago. How surreal.

His Friends role isn’t the only one he gets recognized for, of course, but a couple of his biggest movies can still be connected back to the sitcom.

Two Of Dermot Mulroney’s Best Films Star Friends Actors

There’s simply no question that my favorite Dermot Mulroney movie is My Best Friend’s Wedding. Julia Roberts (in one of her best rom-coms) fights to keep her best friend Michael (Mulroney) from marrying Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). But this 1997 work of art isn’t the only credit Mulroney and Roberts share. That’s right, they were both also on Friends.

Julia Roberts’ role, however, came in Season 2 in “The One After the Super Bowl,” so their paths didn’t cross on that set. Roberts played Susie (aka “Susie Underpants”) who exacted revenge on Matthew Perry’s Chandler for a prank he’d pulled on her when they were kids (hence the nickname).

Other fans recognize Dermot Mulroney from the more recent Scream VI, and while I won’t spoil anything about the latest offering in one of the best horror franchises of all time, I will point out the obvious — that Friends star Courteney Cox also has starred as Gale Weathers in all of the Scream movies.

Dermot Mulroney may have only appeared in three Friends episodes, but he certainly left his mark on fans. It’s also fun that his career has taken him to other projects that feature actors from the show.

Chicago Fire entered a new era in fall of the 2024 TV schedule with Season 13 as the drama's first without Eamonn Walker on board as Chief Boden. Instead, Firehouse 51 is operating under Chief Dom Pascal, played by One Chicago new arrival Dermot Mulroney. Some friction was to be expected when the firefighters and paramedics faced a new chief for the very first time, but some comments from Mulroney shed what I see as some new light on the status quo at 51 as the season continues.

To be honest – when the news first broke that Fire had cast Dermot Mulroney as the new chief rather than honoring Boden's wish for Herrmann to be his successor, part of me assumed that Mulroney's time would be limited to however long it would take for Herrmann to be promoted in Season 13. Much like there was little doubt that Brett Dalton's Lt. Pelham was temporarily filling the spot on Truck until Stella Kidd was ready to step up as lieutenant in Season 10, Pascal seemed like he might not be intended to stick around. (You can revisit the Pelham/Kidd arc streaming with a Peacock subscription.)

I'm reconsidering in light of what Mulroney told TV Insider when asked if Pascal would step aside for Herrmann if the latter passed the necessary tests. He said:

Well, if Herrmann is going to get the top spot at Firehouse 51, something may need to go sideways for Pascal, since it certainly sounds like the new chief definitely doesn't see his place as temporary! Showrunner Andrea Newman described Pascal's arrival as causing an "earthquake" at 51 when she explained why Dermot Mulroney was the right fit to play the character, and he was shaking up the firehouse pretty quickly.

Giving Stella a hard time about the Truck turnover and pointing out that the Truck and Squad lieutenants being married isn't exactly protocol didn't endear him to 51 (or Fire fans) en masse, not least because Stellaride already have a complicated journey without Pascal as an extra variable. After I was on board with the idea of "fresh blood" coming to Chicago Fire last season, maybe it's time that I start thinking of Pascal as a permanent fixture in the firehouse rather than Herrmann's placeholder!

At this point, I'm really wondering if/when/how Chicago Fire plans to bring back Boden in Season 13. When Eamonn Walker's departure was announced ahead of the Season 12 finale in the spring, the door was open for him to still recur as his longtime character without signing back on as a series regular. Boden is still part of the CFD; could he make an appearance and add an extra wrinkle or two to the situation with Pascal at 51?

Only time will tell at this point, but at least Chicago Fire didn't write out Walker by sending Boden far from the Windy City like with Dawson's exit in Season 7 and then Casey's in Season 10. New episodes of Chicago Fire with Dermot Mulroney's Dom Pascal as 51's chief will continue airing on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, between Chicago Med at 8 p.m. ET and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET. The idea of having roommates has never been more fun thanks to FOX’s comedy series, New Girl. Even though it’s been over and done with for years, it remains one of the most rewatchable TV shows ever. Aside from hitting play on the hilarious sitcom for all the great bits in the loft, it’s also a blast for all the major actors who guest-starred over the years. While there are way too many for this list to hold, we’ve compiled some of the biggest names that appeared on the show.

Jamie Lee Curtis

Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis guest starred as the mother of Zooey Deschanel’s Jess Day in the Season 2 episode, “Parents.” Curtis was a great pick to match the quirky spirit of the sitcom’s leading character, and she returned to the series five more times after her initial debut on the series in Season 2.

Taylor Swift

When one thinks of Taylor Swift, sure, “actor” isn’t the first title that comes to mind, but over the years the phenomenon of a singer/songwriter has racked up numerous acting credits in projects like The Lorax, Cats and Amsterdam along. Oh, and what about all those epic Taylor Swift music videos? Anyways, Swift made an appearance in the Season 2 finale of New Girl when Cece is getting married to Shivrang. At the altar, the groom calls off the wedding to say that he wants to marry Swift’s character of Elaine instead.

Prince

One of the most memorable moments in New Girl has to be when the cast is invited to go to a party at Prince’s house… and they actually meet Prince. The Season 3 episode came about thanks to the iconic artist expressing interest in appearing in the show as a fan of the comedy. There’s nothing like that scene when Nick and Jess have a freakout when he appears.

Tiffany Haddish

Girls Trip actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish had a small role in the Season 3 episode “Exes” as a date of Damen Wayans Jr’s Coach. She is part of the plotline of Schmidt deciding to get his own apartment and encouraging Winston and Coach to use the place whenever they like for their hookups. In the scene, all three of them have used it at once and it freaks out Haddish’s character of Leslie.

Rob Reiner

All In The Family’s Rob Reiner returned to the sitcom fold as Jess Day’s dad, Bob, in multiple episodes of New Girl. The beloved actor (and director of classics like The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, This Is Spinal Tap and Stand By Me) was in eleven total episodes of the series, appearing in almost every season of the show.

Lisa Bonet

The Cosby Show’s Lisa Bonet guest starred in the Season 4 episode “Teachers” as an education guru named Brenda Brown. Jess and Coach meet the character while attending together. She calls Coach out for his attitude during the presentation that causes him to stop being Jess’s “buffer” while she tries to ignore her feelings for a British teacher she’s crushing on at her school.

Kaitlin Olson

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Kaitlin Olson (who is back for Season 17 of the comedy) guest starred in New Girl for two episodes in Season 4. She plays Bob Day’s much younger fiancée, who happened to be the high school rival of Jess and Cece back in the day.

Josh Gad

The Book of Mormon and Frozen’s beloved snowman voice actor Josh Gad guest starred in three separate episodes of New Girl (in Season 2, 3 and 4) as a delivery man named Bearclaw who falls head over heels with Jess. He first appears in the episode “Katie” as a blind date gone wrong before also being in “Birthday” and “Walk of Shame.”

Dermot Mulroney

My Best Friend’s Wedding actor Dermot Mulroney is “Fancyman” in New Girl. The actor appeared as a guest star in eight episodes of the show throughout its run after becoming a favorite in Season 1. In the two part episode “Fancyman,” he is introduced as the wealthy father of one of Jess’s students who she strikes up a romance with.

Olivia Rodrigo

Yes, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series actress turned massive pop star Olivia Rodrigo was on New Girl, but it was before reaching mega-stardom. In the Season 6 episode “Young Adult,” Rodrigo plays one of the students in Jess’s school who becomes a huge fan of Nick Miller’s novel The Pepperwood Chronicles. In an effort for her students (including Rodrigo’s character of Terrinea) to like her better, Jess sets up a meeting between a few of the students and Nick.

Megan Fox

In Season 5 of New Girl, Zooey Deschanel was pregnant in real life and since that was not in the cards yet for Jess Day, the decision was made to have her character leave for a while on Jury Duty while Deschanel went on maternity leave. The creators decided to bring in Megan Fox’s Reagan to take Jess’s place and she ended up being part of 15 episodes of the series. Fox is of course also known for being in the Transformers movies, Jennifer’s Body and the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

Alan Ritchson

Before Alan Ritchson starred in one of the best Amazon Prime shows, Reacher, the actor had a memorable guest spot on New Girl in the episode “Micro”. In the Season 4 episode, Ritchson used his comedic chops as a guy Jess is seeing who she struggles with getting past the fact that Ritchson’s Matt has a micro penis.

Henry Winkler

Happy Days and Barry actor Henry Winkler appeared in New Girl (alongside the incredible Julie Hagerty and Taran Killam) in the Season 5 episode “What About Fred.” In the episode, Jess is dating a guy named Fred (Killam), who she finds very boring, but falls for spending time with his charismatic parents Winkler and Hagerty’s Flip and Nancy.

Parker Posey

Parker Posey, aka the “Queen of the Indies,” especially during the best movies of the 1990s, had a great guest appearance in New Girl during the Season 2 episode “Re-Launch.” Schmidt is having a re-branding party for himself and Posey plays a dishevelled shot girl who was not as advertised.

John Cho

Star Trek’s John Cho appeared on New Girl for the Season 5 episode “Jury Duty.” Jess tries to get out of getting on a case for a chance to be acting principal. She asks her friends to help, but fails miserably in front of Cho’s character, who ends up being the man questioning her for the case after they initially have a flirty meet-cute.

Adam Brody

The OC and Nobody Wants This’s Adam Brody was one of Jess’s ex-boyfriend’s, Berkley, in the Season 3 episode, “Exes.” In the episode, Jess tries to prove to Nick that exes can still be friends by introducing him to Berkley, but she’s proved wrong when she finds out his true intentions.

Quinta Brunson

Before Quinta Brunson was the Emmy-winning creator and star of the hit ABC comedy, Abbott Elementary, she had a brief role in New Girl, in the Season 7 episode “Mario.” When Nick is trying to propose to Jess, she unexpectedly adopts a dog, throwing off his plans. Brunson plays a restaurant host that Nick speaks to on the phone as the plans shift.

Stephen Amell

Arrow star Stephen Amell, who played the Green Arrow for eight seasons on The CW, was on New Girl for a couple of episodes in Season 1. He played Cece’s jerk boyfriend Kyle in “The 23rd” and “Valentine’s Day.” Cece ends things with Kyle in the latter episode after realizing she has feelings for Schmidt.

Jessica Biel

7th Heaven and The Sinner actress Jessica Biel stopped by New Girl for the Season 4 premiere “The Last Wedding.” When the gang goes to yet another wedding, Biel plays a single woman who ends up competing with Jess to earn the affection of its best man (played by Reid Scott).

Justin Long

Justin Long had a memorable guest star arc on the first season of New Girl. He plays Paul Genzlinger, a music teacher co-worker of Jess’s whom she starts dating in time for the show’s first Thanksgiving episode. Paul is often thought of as a male version of Jess. After the couple date for about a month and breakup, Long made a re-appearance in Season 4’s “Walk Of Shame.”

Linda Cardellini

New Girl fans got to meet Jess’s sister, Abby Day, in Season 3 through Linda Cardellini’s three-episode arc. The Dead To Me actress plays Jess’s troublemaker older sibling, who is just about completely opposite to the sitcom’s leading actress. Jess is constantly embarrassed by Abby’s behavior when she comes to stay in the loft after Jess saves her from prison.

Alexandra Daddario

Baywatch and The White Lotus’ Alexandra Daddario played one of the neighbors to the New Girl gang in two episodes of the series. Daddario’s Michelle is deemed as one of the “hot” new neighbors that Schmidt, Winston, Coach scramble to impress after their first meeting left something to be desired. Daddario appears in Season 3’s “Mars Landing” and Season 4’s “Goldmine.”

Andy Samberg

For quite a few years, New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were both big comedies airing on FOX at the same time. So in Season 6, the networks decided to crossover the comedies with a special New York episode for New Girl. While the friends are in the Big Apple, Jess gets some help from Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta and the other cast. (The cast of New Girl was also on an episode of B99 called “The Night Shift” that aired the same week in 2016).

Peter Gallagher

The OC’s Peter Gallagher was in multiple episodes of New Girl as Schmidt’s father, Gavin. The vineyard owner first appears in the Season 5 episode “D-Day” when Jess is assisting Schmidt with wedding preparations. Gallagher, who has also been in famous movies like American Beauty and While You Were Sleeping, was a great fit to play Schmidt’s absentee dad.

Randall Park

Before Randall Park became the star of Fresh Off The Boat, Always Be My Maybe and WandaVision, he was briefly in a Season 1 episode of New Girl as an employee at a phone company (with frosted tips), who makes fun of Nick for his crazy low credit score.

Natasha Lyonne

Natasha Lyonne is a famous TV actress for her roles in Orange is the New Black, Russian Doll and Poker Face. Prior to those roles, she had a small role in New Girl’s third episode ever, “Wedding.” She played Gretchen Nelson, an acquaintance of Schmidt, who he ends up sleeping with at every wedding they both attend even though he claims he cannot stand her.

Dylan O'Brien

Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien plays the guy Jess Day lost her virginity to on the night of her prom back when she was in high school. In the episode “Virgins” from Season 2, Jess runs into him many years after their first meeting, but what could have been a sexual fantasy turns into an embarrassing moment for the two of them.

Brenda Song

The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody actress Brenda Song was in a few episodes in Season 2 (and one in Season 3) as Daisy, a love interest for Winston. It’s a short-lived romance for Winston, but Song is a guest star in what we consider to be No. 1 of the best New Girl episodes, “Cooler.”

Joey King

Before Joey King was the star of Netflix’s The Kissing Booth movies or the numerous 2024 movies she’s been in like A Family Affair, Uglies and Despicable Me 4, she was a popular child actor who was in Ramona & Beezus with Selena Gomez or the Taylor Swift music video “Mean.” She was also in a Season 1 episode of New Girl called “Bully” as one of Jess’s students.

Carla Gugino

Carla Gugino, known for the Spy Kids movies and being in multiple Mike Flanagan horror projects was in three 2012 episodes of New Girl as Schmidt’s new boss, Emma. In the first episode Gugino stars in “Menzies,” Schmidt gets into a sexual contract with her that doesn’t go as planned.

Nick Kroll

The very funny Nick Kroll is known for starring in The League, along with creating the Kroll Show and Netflix’s Big Mouth. In Season 2’s “Chicago,” where the gang goes to Nick’s hometown for his father’s funeral, Kroll plays one of Nick Miller’s brothers, alongside Bill Burr! You can tell Kroll and Burr had tons of fun with the Chicago accent bringing some levity to a rather emotional New Girl episode.

Fred Armisen

Saturday Night Live favorite (who was behind some of SNL's funniest recurring characters) and Portlandia lead Fred Armisen had a brief role in New Girl for the season five episode “No Girl.” While Jess is at jury duty, the gang rent out her room to random people, and Armisen plays a guy named Brandon. His short time there made a huge impression because of how funny he is with the guys. Remember when he read Schmidt his romance writing or dressed up like Jess at one point?

Chicago Fire is officially back in the 2024 TV schedule, but the Season 13 premiere wasn't just back to business as usual for the firefighters and paramedics of Firehouse 51. On top of last season's finale bombshell reveal that Damon is Severide's half brother and Kidd dealing with Severide's suggestion that they start a family, Dermot Mulroney debuted as new Firehouse 51 Chief Dom Pascal, recently returned from Miami to start running 51 differently. Following the finale, showrunner Andrea Newman's comments about reactions to Pascal hit a little harder.

When I spoke with Andrea Newman ahead of Season 13, Dermot Mulroney's casting had been announced but there was still no saying how the firefighters who had worked with Boden for so long would react to him. When asked who at 51 would be most affected by Boden's absence in the new season, the showrunner previewed:

At the time of the interview, I assumed that we could count on at least Herrmann's reaction to Dom Pascal. After all, Boden specifically told Herrmann that he wanted him to take over as chief of 51, and the Engine lieutenant seemed more than willing to put in the work at the time. Surely he would be the one who would chafe the most at somebody else sitting in the chief's chair, right?

As it turns out, no! Herrmann warmed up to Pascal sooner than anybody else at 51. Kidd had the most trouble opening up to the idea of Pascal as Boden's replacement, which does make a lot of sense in hindsight. As she noted in "A Monster in the Field," Boden hadn't just encouraged her on her path as a firefighter; he walked her down the aisle. But the biggest surprise reaction for me was actually Mouch, who didn't really appear to have a genuine issue with Pascal until he saw Herrmann's reaction. Herrmann seemed impressed enough by the new chief to willingly stay as Engine lieutenant and not reach for the role that Boden had wanted for him. This poses a problem for Mouch and his goal of becoming a lieutenant and taking Herrmann's slot so he wouldn't have to leave 51. While I didn't see it coming at all from Mouch, it made sense.

Andrea Newman went on to share what exactly the Chicago Fire team was looking for in an actor to play Dom Pascal, saying:

The Season 13 premiere did drop some details about the new chief, ranging from how he was a firefighter in the CFD before working in Miami to his very strained relationship with his wife. There are still more questions than answers, though, particularly after the visit he received from an old coworker from his first stint in Chicago's Fire Department. Still, we can say with confidence that Dom Pascal is no Wallace Boden, for better or worse. When I noted to the showrunner that a chief not fitting in is very different from a floater not fitting in, Newman responded:

Well, Chicago Fire did tease a need for fresh blood back in Season 12! I'm looking forward to seeing more of what Dermot Mulroney's character brings to the firehouse after getting some surprises out of the reactions in the Season 13 premiere, although it would be nice to get at least a cameo from Eamonn Walker as Boden sometime. For now, keep tuning in to Chicago Fire on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET, between Chicago Med at 8 p.m. ET and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET, all on NBC.

Chicago Fire will soon be returning amid the 2024 TV schedule, and Firehouse 51 will be looking a tad different. After it was announced that Eamonn Walker would be stepping away from the NBC drama after starring as Chief Wallace Boden since the beginning of the series, it was a question of who would be replacing him. It was Boden's wish for David Eigenberg’s Christopher Hermann to follow in his footsteps, but Dermot Mulroney is set to arrive as Chief Dom Pascal in Season 13. While Mulroney looks good in the uniform, I can’t help but miss Boden already.

The One Chicago franchise has been adding new stars left and right, which isn’t so surprising, considering how long the shows have been on the air. More specifically, Chicago Fire has seen a "revolving door" of cast members over the last few seasons. Despite that, it doesn’t get any easier saying goodbye to fan-favorite characters and welcoming new faces. I am still excited to see Dermot Mulroney joining the fray, however, and new stills released by NBC show Chief Pascal in charge:

I have to say, Mulroney can certainly work a chief’s uniform, no doubt about it. And it will be entertaining to see how he meshes with the rest of 51 who are probably missing Boden. And they're not the only ones missing him. The new season hasn’t even premiered yet and, already, I’m hoping that the character will drop in soon. What I'll miss most about Boden is his paternal presence, which shines through when he defends those who work under him. All in all, he was a grounding presence on the show.

While Eamonn Walker will not be returning as a series regular for Season 13, there's still a possibility that he could drop in, especially since Boden will still be working in Chicago. I'd honestly be surprised if Eamonn Walker never returned to the show and, if he doesn't, I'd honestly be very disappointed.

The British actor is the latest star to depart Chicago Fire, and he was the third one to exit in Season 12 alone, following Alberto Rosende and Kara Killmer. Given all of the other character changes, Boden's departure feels especially crushing. Eamonn Walker was a larger-than-life series regular, and the show won't be the same without him. At the very least, though, one gets the feeling that the squad will be in good hands with Pascal:

Since Boden is in a position to return to Fire, I wonder what kind of conversations have been had amongst the producers about utilizing him moving forward. It'd be great if he became a frequent guest star. But, of course, there still needs to be room for Dermot Mulroney's Chief Pascal to shine. Let's hope the show gives fans a healthy dose of Pascal while also featuring Boden sometime in the future.

The 2024 TV schedule is slowly but surely getting closer to premiere season for the major broadcast networks, which means that the three shows of NBC’s One Chicago will return next month. Between what happened in the finales and what has been announced over hiatus, it’s been safe to say that changes are in store in the fall, but only Chicago P.D. had announced a new cast member over the past week… until now, anyway! Chicago Med and Chicago Fire have added new stars, and I’m so ready to (hopefully) get some crossover action back.

The first new casting over the past week was also the most obvious, since Tracy Spiridakos’ departure from P.D. was announced before the last season even started, so the question of who would replace Upton in Season 12 was being asked long before the answer was announced with a One Chicago alum coming on board the cop drama. Read on for what Med and Fire have in store!

Chicago Fire Adds Two New Stars And Promotes Another

Station 19 vet Dermot Mulroney was the first new addition to Chicago Fire for Season 13 that was announced over the summer, and he’ll play new Battalion Chief Dom Pascal as a series regular to replace Eamonn Walker’s Boden at Firehouse 51. It remains to be seen if he’ll be a series regular for the long term, since Boden wanted Herrmann as his successor and the former 51 Chief is still with the CFD; for now, fans can count on seeing some fresh blood in the firehouse.

KaDee Strickland, who also comes from the TV universe of Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 as an alum of Private Practice, is on board. TVLine reports that she’ll be playing the estranged wife of Mulroney’s new character, by the name of Monica Pascal.

Finally, TVLine further reports on the Fire front that Jake Lockett has been promoted to series regular status for the upcoming Season 13. If you’re anything like me, the only surprise here is that he hadn’t already been a series regular in Season 12 after Carver got some meaty storylines and the growing relationship with Violet. Jocelyn Hudson had already been confirmed as a regular as paramedic Lyla Novak, so Fire seems to be fleshing out Violet’s relationships in Season 13.

Chicago Med Casts Multiple New Characters As One Regular Leaves

News broke over the summer that Dominic Rains was leaving Med ahead of the tenth season, which effectively resolved Crockett Marcell’s cliffhanger from the Season 9 finale. It seemed likely that Med would add another doctor to the ED and/or surgery to fill in his vacancy, but the medical drama has actually added two new characters as well as confirmed three returning stars

Parenthood’s Sarah Ramos and Never Have I Ever’s Darren Barnet have been cast for Season 10 to play Dr. Caitlin Lenox and Dr. John Frost, respectively, according to Deadline. Lenox will contribute as a new attending in the ED, while Dr. Frost is a pediatric resident with a secret to hide. Chicago Med is fresh off of a story of an ED doctor hiding a secret with Luke Mitchell – who was promoted to series regular for Season 10 – as Dr. Mitch Ripley, but I’m glad to have a pediatric doctor back in the mix after Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard) abruptly left the hospital in early Season 8.

Throw in Chicago P.D. casting One Chicago and New Amsterdam alum Toya Turner for Season 12, and there will be plenty of fresh faces across all three shows starting this fall. I’m not going to get my hopes up for another three-part crossover event like what was possible prior to the new production protocols courtesy of COVID-19, but I’d love to see characters popping up on the other shows more often, even if just for a cameo.

That trend did increase a bit in what actually aired of the 2023-2024 TV season, but that season was also abbreviated after the WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike. While it remains to be seen if One Chicago will be more cohesive across all three shows starting next month, at least the wait is almost over! One Chicago returns to NBC this fall on Wednesday, September 25 with Med at 8 p.m. ET, Fire at 9 p.m. ET, and P.D. at 10 p.m. ET, as usual. All three shows are also available streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription.

Chicago Fire ended Season 12 back in the spring with a big question: who will replace Wallace Boden as Chief of Firehouse 51 following his promotion? At the time, the leader seemed to be setting Herrmann up to step into his shoes, but then news broke that One Chicago was looking to cast somebody new. Now, a Station 19 alum has been cast, so he comes to Chicago Fire with experience on ABC's firefighting show. Fans, prepare to welcome Dermot Mulroney to Season 13 in the 2024 TV schedule, with the news making me happier than ever that Boden isn't gone for good.

Dermot Mulroney joins Chicago Fire as a new series regular in Season 13 to play Chief Dom Pascal in 51, according to TVLine. This isn't an internal promotion in the CFD, as Pascal has been a Fire Chief in Miami in recent years despite getting his start in the Windy City. His style of leadership is said to be different from how Boden ran his longtime firehouse; whether or not that's a bad thing after the tease of adding "fresh blood" last season remains to be seen.

While Mulroney's character is billed as a series regular, it's possible that he won't be around 51 long term, since Herrmann could still get that promotion if he's promoted to captain status and passes the test to become a Battalion chief. That would be interesting for a few reasons, not the least of which is that Chief Herrmann would presumably open up the slot for a new officer on Engine, but I may be getting ahead of myself.

My knee-jerk reaction to Mulroney's casting – other than getting "Say A Little Prayer For You" stuck in my head from his My Best Friend's Wedding days – was that I'm so glad Eamonn Walker is still expected to appear in Chicago Fire Season 13 as a guest star, because I would love to see how the previous Chief of 51 interacts with the new Chief in light of their different styles of leadership. Mulroney and Walker could be formidable scene partners – or opponents, depending on what Dom Pascal is like – and the transition from Boden to Pascal might be easier if fans see Boden still around. All in all, I'm optimistic about Mulroney.

It remains to be seen what other cast changes may be in store in Season 13. Fire didn't waste much time in finding a new paramedic partner for Violet after Brett's departure, and I'm hoping that the teases of Kylie joining Truck 81 pay off. There's also the quest of Damon's future at 51 after the Season 12 finale cliffhanger reveal that he's Severide's half-brother, a.k.a. the secret son of Benny Severide. Damon has been a solid part of 81, but Severide's previous surprise half sibling didn't stick around for the long run.

Fortunately, the wait to see Dermot Mulroney in action at Firehouse 51 has an end in sight: Wednesday, September 25 at 9 p.m. for Chicago Fire, as always between Chicago Med at 8 p.m. ET and Chicago P.D. at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. The late September premiere dates make the three One Chicago series the first of the nine-show Dick Wolf TV universe to return in the fall.

Carrie Preston has been entertaining fans on what critics are calling her “delightful” The Good Wife spinoff Elsbeth on CBS, but more than a quarter-century ago, the actress was just getting her start in acting on the beloved 1997 film My Best Friend’s Wedding. Preston played one of Kimberly’s cousins, and that means she got to take part in one of the most iconic awkward dinner scenes in movie history — the “I Say a Little Prayer” sing-along. Turns out shooting that scene might not have been as fun as it looked, as the actress explained why things were pretty gross by the second day of filming.

Alongside Rachel Griffiths, Carrie Preson played one of the self-proclaimed “vengeful sluts,” cousins to Cameron Diaz’s character. During the scene in question, the entire wedding party is at brunch while George (Rupert Everett) regales them with a made-up story of how he met Julianne (Julie Roberts). After building to a dramatic climax, George breaks into song, ultimately leading the entire restaurant in a spirited sing-along of Dionne Warwick’s “I Say a Little Prayer.” Preston opened up about that scene and shared the most unappetizing detail during a segment of The Jess Cagle Show. She recalled: 

As many times as I’ve re-watched My Best Friend’s Wedding, I’ve never for a second considered that they spent that much time on set with real shellfish. Honestly, to spend over 24 hours on that song sounds like a pretty big ask to begin with, but I’d also have to hope that any crab or lobster that wasn’t being actually eaten by the Wallace family was not real. Maybe the smell helped Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney keep such disgusted expressions on their faces the whole time.

Despite that part of the experience, it didn’t sound like Carrie Preston had one ounce of regret about getting such a fun part in one of the best rom-coms of all time. She even spilled a little tea about the scene in question, saying: 

P.J. Hogan must have known he had gold on his hands if he added that scene to the movie himself and then took two days to shoot it — lobsters and all. I’m glad he did, since it has become such a well-known scene, and my sympathies go out to all involved for their sacrifice. How long do you think it was before any of them ate shellfish again?

It’s been over 25 years since My Best Friend’s Wedding first came to theaters starring Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney. Roberts played Mulroney’s lifelong friend who tries to sabotage his wedding due to her jealousy towards the bride. As the ‘90s rom-com queen expressed her wish to be in a sequel to one of the best rom-coms of all time, her male lead in the 1997 film reveals whether or not he wants to join in on the fun too.

As ‘90s rom-com stars like George Clooney and Julia Roberts returned to the genre in Tickets to Paradise and even Meg Ryan came back to heartwarming romances with What Happens Later, it looks like feel-good romances are making a comeback with the OGs that helped popularize them. When speaking to ET during the premiere of his new rom-com Anyone But You, Mulroney was asked if he’d be interested in being in a My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel. This was what he had to say:

There was a time when Julia Roberts said she probably wouldn’t star in romantic comedies anymore because she didn’t think she’d be able to play a lead in the genre as effectively anymore. As the Homecoming actress has slayed in her best rom-com films back in the ‘90s, it’s understandable why she thought her time as a lead in the endearing genre wouldn’t work for today’s audiences. But when it came to deciding to film Tickets to Paradise with George Clooney, she jumped at the chance to do it if it meant being snarky to the ER vet! Clearly, audiences rushed into theaters to see the duo together for that comedy-romance film as it hit a major box office milestone of $60.6 million, a personal best for the two stars’ careers. So, it looks like she’s still got it.

Now that Julia Roberts is back playing characters wrapped up in comedy antics that end in a sweet kiss, you may be wondering if she has any interest in a My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel. While speaking last Monday with Gayle King on CBS Morning, the Pretty Woman star gave her answer on what she could picture a sequel would be like. First off, Mulroney’s character, Michael, would still be with Cameron Diaz’s Kimmy. She also said her character Julianne and best friend George would “start a do-it-yourself show on HGTV and become wildly famous." 

Since the character of George is one of the best supporting characters you'd find in classic ‘90s films, I would love to see a friendship film of him and Julianne. But if nothing happens between Michael and Julianne, what would a good sequel story be? Maybe Julianne moves on with a different guy and George’s jealousy gets the best of him for fear of losing his best friend. Or maybe George gets a new love interest and Julianne is back with her sabotaging habits. Whatever it is, audiences will flock to theaters to see it knowing the OG’s of the unexpected ‘90s box office hit would return. 

With Julia Roberts being able to picture My Best Friend’s Wedding having a sequel, it’s a relief to know Dermot Dulroney feels the same way. ‘90s stars have been pouring into rom-coms as of late, so maybe we’ll get the fan-awaited sequel we’ve been anticipating. Secret Invasion just wrapped up its run on Disney+, finishing out a tale that saw Nick Fury attempt to stop a Skrull invasion. One of the new characters introduced in the limited series was U.S. President Ritson, who was played by Dermot Mulroney. The actor is in an interesting position, as it's already been confirmed that Harrison Ford is playing President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross in at least one of the upcoming Marvel movies. One might think that Mulroney is bummed about his character being succeeded. However, the actor behind the current MCU President is looking on the bright side of the situation, even cracking jokes about losing the job. 

Dermot Mulroney spoke to Comicbook.com about his role in Secret Invasion and had a hilarious response when asked about the news that Harrison Ford will be the cinematic universe's new Commander in Chief. It appears the MCU actor is fine with how things are meant to play out, based on how he humorously weighed in on how Ritson might be able to stick around:

Dylan Mulroney is absolutely right, and it would be funny to see one of those things happen so that he sticks with the MCU for a little while longer. After all, considering his character was attacked by Skrulls and nearly killed, the fictional politician may be safer if he gets a demotion.

President Ritson narrowly escaped an unfortunate fate, after he was nearly assassinated by Gravik and his Skrull forces. By the end of the series, the head of state issued a bill declaring off-world species as hostile and threatened to include Skrulls among that group. And that's just one of the notable developments to make note of from the finale. Nick Fury returned to S.A.B.E.R. with Varra, and the two are going to attempt to negotiate peace with the Kree. Col. James Rhodes -- who was captured and impersonated by a Skrull -- was rescued. Although, some fans' concerns for Rhodey have been realized, as it's been confirmed that he was imprisoned for some time.

As for why Ritson won't be in charge for long, it's possible that his actions could make him an unpopular president.  The bill he established could negatively impact a majority of benign cosmic beings, most specifically the Guardians of the Galaxy. There's also the fact that his rage-fueled words also inspire vigilantes that are killing innocent people. While the consequences of Secret Invasion don't seem as far-reaching as those of the comic series of the same name, it's fair to assume that some ripples will be felt throughout the cinematic universe.

If this is the end of the road for Dermot Mulroney in the MCU, it's great that he seems to be at peace with it. After all, at this point, only he and William Sadler (who played Warren Ellis in Iron Man 3) can say they've portrayed the chief of state in released Marvel Studios productions. And then of course, we have to talk about the new guy.

Studio head Kevin Feige revealed back in February that in addition to taking over as General Thaddeus Ross, Harrison Ford's iteration would also be the MCU's President of the United States. Fans will see Ford in the role when they watch Captain America: Brave New World, which is currently slated for release in July 2024. It's unclear whether Dermot Mulroney will appear, but there's always the possibility that we'll learn of Ritson's fate.

Dermot Mulroney has had a long career across the large and small screens over the decades, and most recently made his debut in the 2023 TV schedule as President Ritson in Marvel's Secret Invasion for Disney+ subscribers. He's had to promote the project without knowing all the details, as has been a Marvel practice for years, and his recent interview on The View may generate more buzz for the actor walking off than hyping Secret Invasion.

Although he came to The View as a member of the Secret Invasion cast with an exciting new project to promote, he was happy to speak about his rom-com past, and the interview seemingly went according to the talk show's plan for the most part. It wasn't until several minutes in that he decided that he would walk off to show his support for the writers in the ongoing WGA writers strike. Mulroney wasn't unpleasant in the slightest during the interview, and kindly to the hosts of The View saved his walk-off until the very end and made it clear that he was doing it symbolically rather than taking a shot at the talk show. He just made sure to show off his solidarity with the writers while live on The View and share that he'd be on the picket lines in July. After making his symbolic gesture, the My Best Friend's Wedding alum explained his reasoning in a statement to Variety: 

All in all, it's clear that Dermot Mulroney had no ill will toward The View or the co-hosts, but seized his opportunity to speak up for the WGA writers on strike after giving the meat of his interview. It looked like his conversation with the hosts on camera was ending anyway, so he did his job to promote Secret Invasion while still making sure that his statement made it into the live broadcast. 

He also seems enthusiastic about the new Disney+ show, even though he only received the script pages that concern his character. Working with Samuel L. Jackson – who recently told a story about a stolen copy of the Avengers' script – seems to have been a highlight, along with reuniting with Don Cheadle. In fact, he doesn't even know the full story of Secret Invasion, so perhaps he'll be watching the new releases on Disney+ (and/or the Marvel movies in order to pass the time between episodes) along with the rest of the MCU fandom!

The horror genre continues to experience a thrilling renaissance, to the joy of moviegoers out there. 2023 started off strong with M3GAN, but one of the most hotly anticipated upcoming horror movies has definitely been Scream VI. Luckily that slasher is nearly here, with fans hoping to avoid potential spoilers online. And while the sixth Scream won’t have David Arquette’s Dewey, it looks like he’ll be honored in the new slasher.

Scream VI is seemingly making a number of bold narrative swings, moving the action from Woodsboro to New York City. The movie also won’t feature Neve Campbell or David Arquette, with the latter actor killed off in the last sequel. One of the newcomers joining the franchise is actor Dermot Mulroney, who is playing Detective Bailey. He recently spoke to Parade about his mysterious role in Scream VI, and name dropped Arquette specifically. As he shared,

How sweet is that? It looks like Dermot Mulroney felt the legacy of the Scream franchise when stepping into the mysterious sixth movie. And playing a police officer definitely had him thinking about David Arquette’s five-film tenure as Dewey Riley. Although he technically was no longer a cop in the last movie. 

Dermot Mulroney’s comments might help Scream fans who are still adjusting to the idea of seeing the sixth movie without the inclusion of Neve Campbell and David Arquette. It sounds like Mulroney felt the responsibility of taking on the mantle of the franchise’s next police officer. And it’ll be fascinating to see the ways that Dewey is referenced throughout Scream VI. Considering the new Ghostface killer(s) has a shrine to the previous murders, smart money says there will be plenty. 

Later in that same interview, Dermot Mulroney explained why he was so eager to join the beloved franchise for Scream VI. And it seems like the contents of 2022’s Scream helped to inspire him, specifically the new cast of actors. As he put it,

There you have it. It looks like Dermot Mulroney was all too happy to join Scream VI, especially given the chance to work with the new leading actors. Indeed, the upcoming slasher is expected to focus on the two surviving sets of siblings from the fifth movie. Namely Sam and Tara Carpenter (Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega) and Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding). It sounds like that quartet really managed to impress Mulroney during their time on set.

These comments by Dermot Mulroney may help to quell the fears of longtime fans who might be nervous about the sixth movie missing out on 2 of the 3 OG franchise heroes. While Dewey was killed off, franchise star Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute. It’s hard to imagine a Scream movie without Sidney Prescott, but Mulroney seems to be a big fan of the four actors who are getting their sophomore appearance in the sixth film.

Of course, there is another legacy character that fans are excited to return in Scream VI. Namely Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed, who is back for the first time since the events of Wes Craven’s Scream 4. Her long-theorized survival was confirmed in an easter egg in the last movie, and it’ll be thrilling to see the fan-favorite character back… even if there are some memes going around online about her wig.

I don’t think it’s a hot take to say that Julia Roberts is one of the best romantic comedy actresses to ever do it. From 1990’s Pretty Woman to this year’s (mostly) delightful Ticket to Paradise, Roberts has allowed us to suspend all real-world expectations through classics like Notting Hill and Runaway Bride. For me, though, it was My Best Friend’s Wedding. The 1997 tale of one woman willing to destroy everything in her path in the name of staking a claim on her true love hit me right in my angsty 15-year-old heart, and it’s safe to say I got my money’s worth from that VHS tape. 

But life happens — as does newer technology — and somewhere along the line, the rewatches of Julianne (Julia Roberts) desperately trying to break up her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) and his fiancée Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) ceased to be. I recently decided to revisit the old favorite as it marks its 25th anniversary, and a few things struck me about My Best Friend’s Wedding. Please accompany me on this journey: 

Who Makes A Backup Plan To Get Married At 28? 

When I was 15, did I really believe 28 was spinster age? On my rewatch, I was expecting Julianne to say she and Michael made their blood pact (!) to be each other’s backup when they were at least 30, if not older. When Jules oh-so-dramatically recalled Michael’s words — “Swear, when we’re 28 if we’ve never married, we marry each other” — an unexpected “Ha!” escaped my mouth. Come to think of it, though, I got married a week before my 28th birthday, so there’s a chance this was etched somewhere deep in my psyche. 

Rupert Everett Stole This Movie As George 

All the best romantic comedies have a best friend character, but it’s not often that person steals the whole damn show. George (Rupert Everett) was the winner for me, playing the roles of Jules’ editor, best friend, moral compass, fake fiancé and hero at the very end. During the famous lunch scene, the way he can’t stop himself from joining in with the “vengeful sluts” (Rachel Griffiths and Carrie Preston) singing “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” is pure brilliance. George was granted, in my opinion, the best lines of the whole movie, including: 

• “I can see why.” (After Jules screams that Michael loved “me for nine goddamn years! Me!”) 
• “Death by minibar, how glamorous.” 
• “Love to. Love the bag, love the shoes, love everything, love to.” 
• “Maybe there won’t be marriage. Maybe there won’t be sex. But by God, there’ll be dancing.”

Two All-Time Classic Musical Scenes Still Hold Up 

Speaking of the lunch scene, that is just one of two all-time classic musical moments that My Best Friend’s Wedding delivers. Do people actually exist who DON’T think of this ‘90s box office hit anytime they hear “I Say a Little Prayer for You”? This whole-restaurant sing-along is made all the better by how miserable Jules and Michael look while everybody else goes off. 

The karaoke scene, as well, where Kimmy slaughters “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself,” stands up 25 years later, as Cameron Diaz's character had everybody in her corner by the end of that song — even Julianne. 

Wait, Did This Movie Inspire Two Of Grey’s Anatomy’s Most Iconic Speeches? 

Two times during my viewing of this ‘90s classic, my Grey’s Anatomy radar went off. Is it possible that the infamous words from this rom-com live in the subconsciouses of those writing for the ABC medical drama? Hear me out. Michael talking to Jules about love as they boat down the Chicago River sounds a lot like Mark Sloan’s iconic advice to Jackson Avery:

• MICHAEL: Kimmy says if you love someone, you say it. You say it, right then, out loud. Otherwise, the moment just passes you by.
• SLOAN: If you love someone, you tell them. Even if you're scared that it's not the right thing. Even if you're scared that it'll cause problems. Even if you're scared that it will burn your life to the ground, you say it, and you say it loud and then you go from there.

And, you can’t tell me Meredith Grey wasn’t channeling a little Julianne when these lines were uttered: 

• JULIANNE: Choose me. Marry me. Let me make you happy.
• MEREDITH: Pick me. Choose me. Love me.

Neither one of those situations turned out the way our heroines wanted them to, so what should that teach us about begging for love? 

Paul Giamatti Came Into Our Lives Like An Advice-Wielding, Cigarette-Smoking Angel 

Remember the days of smoking indoors? What a time. This scene with Paul Giamatti as the bellman always seemed so intimate to me, the way he and Julianne share a cigarette during her moment of crisis. He imparts some wisdom before journeying off, surely to save some other weary soul.

Paul Giamatti wasn’t the only now-big name to pop up in small roles throughout this movie. I loved seeing Rose Abdoo as the seamstress, Harry Shearer as the author at George’s book reading, and Paul Adelstein as a groomsman.

God Bless This Time Capsule Of Email In 1997 

As Julianne committed this heinous cyber crime to get her BFF fired from his job so he’ll dump his fiancée on their wedding day, it was hilarious to see this wildly outdated email interface, where she doesn’t even type in an email address, just Michael’s boss’ name, title, and “Sport Magazine.” 

Kimmy Is Too Good For Michael; He And Julianne Deserve Each Other 

Throughout my rewatch, I couldn’t fight one thought that kept creeping into my head — Julianne is such a terrible person! She was so patronizing to Kimmy, who went out of her way to make sure Julianne was able to spend every available moment with Michael. And the schemes to try to stop the wedding were plain evil. Michael was hardly better, openly flirting with Julianne constantly. 

Kimmy, meanwhile, was more emotionally mature than a lot of 20-year-olds, fully accepting and trusting Jules, despite her past with Michael. Kimmy also gave him her full support with his career, despite her own feelings, because she knew it was important to him. I daresay Kimmy might have been better off just letting Michael and Julianne have each other.

Additional Thoughts

Here are some other quick thoughts I had about My Best Friend’s Wedding: 

• Shoutout to whoever had to inflate all of the balloons pictured above.
• That is not how restaurant reviews work. “Inventive and confident”?
• Julia Roberts is an absolute master at physical comedy. I’d forgotten how many times she gets knocked off her feet.
• Kimmy’s license plate reads “HPY 20.” I’d never noticed that on my old VHS.
• Jules saying being a sportswriter isn’t a grown-up job, to me, was the most offensive thing she did in this movie. 
• Has there ever been a more graphic insult than Michael calling Jules “the pus that infects the mucus that cruds up the fungus that feeds on the pond scum”? Poetry.

Not all movies stand the test of time, but watching My Best Friend’s Wedding 25 years later was such a treat. Although I viewed it through a slightly different lens than as the teenager I once was, I remain unbothered by the more ridiculous aspects of the plot and was pleasantly surprised by some of the subtler humor in the script. I don’t know about you, but I grew up on Julia Roberts rom-coms. She was one of the actresses who was at the front of the genre throughout the 1990s, and this month she will make her return to the genre on the 2022 movies schedule with George Clooney in Ticket to Paradise. While Roberts and Clooney played wife and husband in Ocean’s Eleven and Twelve, this will be their first foray into the rom-com genre together. With the movie coming out soon, I thought it’d be a good idea to rank six of Roberts' rom-coms. So here we go:  

6. Runaway Bride 

Who is Julia? Maggie Carpenter, runaway bride x3 who runs a hardware store.

Who is her love interest? Dating columnist Ike Graham, played by Richard Gere.

Year of Release: 1999

I’ll start with what I liked about this movie: I loved that the cat was named Italics. I appreciated that Roberts’ character was independent and worked an unconventional job for a woman. Finally, Gere and Roberts are phenomenal together. However, lightning did not strike twice with this one. While you’ll see Pretty Woman later on this list – which stars both Roberts and Gere and was also directed by Garry Marshall – Runaway Bride does not even get close to the quality of its predecessor. 

The movie follows Ike (Gere) as he travels to a small town to report on a bride who has run away from her wedding three times. Somehow all her ex-fiancés aren’t that mad at her, except the one that tipped Ike off, and overall the town is unbothered by Maggie’s inability to go through with a wedding. Talk about a financial and logistical nightmare; it was distracting me from the plot!

5. My Best Friend’s Wedding

Who is Julia? Julianne Potter. In the movie, all that’s relevant is she’s best friends with Michael O’Neal.

Who is her love interest? Michael O’Neal, played by Dermot Mulroney, is engaged to a woman who is not Julia Roberts.

Year of Release: 1997

I know that people really love this movie, but there is something about ruining weddings that rubs me the wrong way. This one is slightly better than Runaway Bride, but still, the wedding wrecking is a trope I’m not a fan of. Anyways, I digress.

The film follows Julianne (Roberts) after she finds out her longtime best friend Michael (Mulroney) is getting married. Michael’s fiancée Kimberley (Cameron Diaz) decides to make Julianne her maid of honor and chaos ensues. My Best Friend’s Wedding is interesting in the fact that it does not have a conventional ending, which I really appreciated, especially given how much I disliked Roberts’ character for the majority of the movie. Overall, it’s a swell time. Roberts and Mulroney have excellent chemistry, and Diaz is super funny.

4. Eat Pray Love  

Who is Julia? Liz Gilbert, a writer-turned-world traveler on a journey of self-discovery.

Who is her love interest? Felipe, played by Javier Bardem, a Brazilian businessman she meets in Bali.

Year of Release: 2010

Based on the memoir of the same name, Eat Pray Love follows Elizabeth Gilbert on an around-the-world journey to find herself after a rough divorce from her longtime husband Stephen (Billy Crudup). The movie is split into thirds, just like the title, and we don’t get the rom-com section until the third act. She eats, she meditates and then she goes to Bali and meets Felipe, a sweet Brazilian who is also on his own journey of self-acceptance. 

Overall the movie is very thoughtful and gorgeous. I think Liz is someone everyone can relate to, and Roberts does a good job of portraying both the good and the bad parts of our protagonist. My only complaint is I wish we would have gotten to the 'love' part faster because Roberts’ scenes with Bardem are heartfelt and warm. This movie is a great time, and while not as rom-com-y as others, it has its moments, and will make your heart happy.

3. Mystic Pizza - HBO Max 

Who is Julia? Daisy, a rebellious young woman who works in a pizza joint with her gal pals.

Who is her love interest? Charlie, played by Adam Storke, a rich kid who got kicked out of law school (think Logan from Gilmore Girls; this boy has the same energy).

Year of Release: 1988

This is a lovely movie about three girls who all work at the same pizza place (hence the name of the movie), each with their own romantic story arcs. Released in 1988, this was one of Roberts’ breakout performances. Unlike a lot of her other movies, her character is a bit more rebellious and fiery, very much a stick-it-to-the-man kind of girly, and it's super refreshing.

I think Mystic Pizza is a stellar way to kick off a career, and it's somehow simultaneously a time capsule of the ‘80s and timeless. Roberts is also surrounded by a fantastic ensemble cast that includes a young Vincent D’Onofrio, as well as Annabeth Gish, Lili Taylor, Adam Storke and William R. Moses. Also, if you look closely, you can catch a baby-faced Matt Damon.

2. Notting Hill - Peacock 

Who is Julia? Anna Scott, a super famous actress.

Who is her love interest? William Thacker, played by Hugh Grant, owner of a travel bookshop in Notting Hill.

Year of Release: 1999

When it came to rom-coms in the 1990s, Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant were the cream of the crop. So, pairing them together feels like something that was bound to happen. The story follows William (Grant) after he meets Anna (Roberts), and while the two fall in love with each other, the challenges of fame get in their way. 

I think what makes this movie great is it takes the character types Roberts and Grant portray best and plays to their strengths to create a unique romantic comedy. Roberts plays the independent woman, as she has in almost all her other movies, she tells it like it is, and she is able to be both hilarious and extremely dramatic with the flip of a switch. Meanwhile, Grant brings his awkward, introverted and clumsy persona from movies like Four Weddings and a Funeral to Notting Hill. It’s a match made in rom-com heaven and a very good time.

1. Pretty Woman 

Who is Julia? Vivian Ward, a prostitute. 

Who is her love interest? Edward Lewis, played by Richard Gere, a rich businessman

Year of Release: 1990

I feel like this one is obvious. Pretty Woman was game-changing. It showed Roberts in the role of Vivian, a prostitute who falls in love with the rich Edward, played by Richard Gere. The movie does not look down on Roberts or chastise her for being a prostitute. Instead, it depicts an independent woman trying to make money who happens to fall in love. Overall, it is a movie that was ahead of its time in 1990. 

Pretty Woman is so funny, yet heartfelt, and it is all grounded in Roberts’ nuanced performance. Her infectious laugh can be felt throughout the movie, and when she’s down on her luck, we are right there sympathizing with her. Along with her performance, Gere is also fantastic, and the duo's chemistry is off the charts. There’s a reason this movie is a classic, and it’s because of Julia Roberts. 

Pretty Woman is not currently streaming, but it can be rented. 

There you have it, that's Julia Roberts’ rom-coms ranked. Personally, I really look up to the actress and admire the characters she has taken on. Much like how she broke the glass ceiling with Erin Brokovich in terms of salaries and defended '90s rom-coms, I think she helped represent strong and independent women in film in a way that really hadn’t been seen until the 1990s. 

Now we get to see her back in this fun genre, with her snarky scene partner George Clooney (she even said a reason she did the movie was to be snarky with Clooney), and I couldn’t be more excited. You can watch Ticket to Paradise on October 21, and you can stream all of Roberts’ other rom-coms across various streaming platforms. 

Following the success of 2022's legacyquel, the Scream franchise is moving full steam ahead into the future, and the next installment is set to arrive only a little over a year after its predecessor. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are back as directors for Scream 6, and though we don't know anything about the plot beyond the fact that it will be set in New York, the movie has quickly put together a stellar ensemble.

The cast of Scream 6 includes a mix of franchise veterans and newbies, and we've put together this feature to both identify all of the actors and collect the information that is available about their characters. As more names are announced we will continue to update this feature, but below you'll learn about all of the names we know so far.

Courteney Cox

With David Arquette’s Dewey Riley having been killed and Neve Campbell not returning to the Scream franchise due to a pay dispute, Courteney Cox is set up as the principal legacy star in Scream 6. She confirmed her part in the upcoming sequel in an interview with Variety in June 2022, and she will be back in action as intrepid reporter Gale Weathers. We don’t know if the new Ghostface will be coming to her this time around, or if she will be drawn to the crime spree as in previous cases.

Melissa Barrera

Playing Sam Carpenter, Melissa Barrera was introduced as the protagonist of the new era of the Scream franchise in the 2022 legacyquel, and the young actor will continue to bear that torch in the next movie. As was revealed in Scream, Sam is the illegitimate daughter of OG Ghostface Billy Loomis, and she has been known to have his voice in her head from time to time. When audiences catch up with her in the new movie, she will be living in New York, but she won’t be alone…

Jenna Ortega

Jenna Ortega will be back as “elevated” horror fan Tara Carpenter in Scream 6, as was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter when the movie’s cast was first announced. Tara will be with her sister Sam in New York when the events of the story start to play out and a new Ghostface begins to start killing people. The sibling relationship experience a lot of turmoil in 2022’s Scream, but the end of the film suggests that the trauma will bring them closer together. In addition to Scream, Ortega has featured in other genre efforts including X, Studio 666, and the upcoming Wednesday series for Netflix.

Jasmin Savoy Brown

Jasmin Savoy Brown started 2022 on the right foot thanks to the January theatrical release of Scream and the finale of Yellowjackets Season 1, and her great year continued with the announcement of Scream 6’s cast in May 2022. The actor is set to reprise her role as Mindy Meeks-Martin, the niece of beloved franchise hero Randy Meeks, as while she was cut up pretty bad in the fourth Scream sequel, she successfully survived the carnage.

Mason Gooding

Chad Meeks-Martin’s injuries suffered at the hands of Ghostface in 2022’s Scream were arguably even worse than those incurred by his twin sister, but the end of the movie confirms his survival when he delivers a thumbs up to his sibling while being treated by paramedics in an ambulance. Again, it was clearly a setup to bring the character back in a sequel, and Mason Gooding was among the stars confirmed for Scream 6 when the project’s gears started turning in spring 2022.

Hayden Panettiere

Surprise! You may have thought that Kirby Reed was killed during the Ghostface murders of 2011, but it turns out that she survived her night of terror. Her continued existence on the mortal plane was teased via Easter egg in 2022’s Scream, but it was confirmed in May 2022 that Hayden Panettiere will be in Scream 6.

Dermot Mulroney

Police officers and detectives don’t have a terrific survival rate in the Scream movies. That being on the table, we’ll be optimistic and say that Dermot Mulroney is now set up to buck the odds by playing a cop in Scream 6. The My Best Friend’s Wedding star’s previous genre credits include Stoker and Insidious Chapter 3, and his involvement in Scream 6 was announced in June 2022.

Henry Czerny

As far as franchise movies are concerned, Henry Czerny is best known for his association with Tom Cruise’s high-flying antics in the Mission: Impossible series, but he’ll be joining the Scream family soon with a part in the upcoming Scream 6. The projects marks a reunion between Czerny and directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett as the actor previously had a key supporting role in the 2019 hit Ready Or Not. And speaking of performers from that beloved bit of horror…

Samara Weaving

Samara Weaving was the lead in the aforementioned Ready Or Not, and while scheduling conflicts ended up keeping her out of 2022’s Scream, no such thing will get in the way for Scream 6. The Australian star’s role in the upcoming horror movie was reported in July 2022, though how she will fit into the plot of the film is unknown at this time.

Tony Revolori

When Bloody Disgusting reported that Samara Weaving was in Scream 6, the news came with the bonus info that the production had also added a Spider-Man star. Tony Revolori, who plays comedic antagonist Flash Thompson in the MCU web-slinger films, is reportedly part of the ensemble in the new horror sequel – though there is no word available on his role and/or how he’s linked to the established characters in the franchise.

Jack Champion

Between Avengers: Endgame and Avatar: The Way Of Water, Jack Champion is a young actor who already has a great number of high-profile titles on his resume, and Scream 6 will soon be added to the list. Champion was one of four actors who joined the supporting cast of the new horror movie in June 2022, though we haven’t learned any details about his character in the film.

Devyn Nekoda

Devyn Nekoda has spent most of her career on the small screen with roles on shows including Degrassi: The Next Generation, Backstage, Utopia Falls, and Ginny & Georgia, but soon she will be making her big screen debut. Her only other feature credit to date is the Disney+ original Sneakerella, which dropped on the screening service about a month before her role in Scream 6 was announced.

Liana Liberato

To date, Liana Liberato is probably best known for her role on the Hulu original series Light As A Feather, but perhaps her role in Scream 6 will change her profile. It’s hard to say right now given that we don’t know what he part will be in the expansive ensemble.

Josh Segarra

Joining Tony Revolori and Jack Champion as MCU actors in the Scream 6 cast is Josh Segarra. The actor has extensive small screen experience – his filmography including Orange Is The New Black, Arrow, FBI, and The Other Two – but most recently he has earned acclaim for his turn as Augustus 'Pug' Pugliese in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law.

The horror genre has been on fire for the last decade, to the joy of moviegoing audiences. And as a result, some of the best horror movies have returned to theaters via legacy-quels. 2022’s Scream was in that category, and another sequel was quickly green lit as a result of its box office and critical success. And now Scream 6’s Dermot Mulroney has revealed details about his new character, and his connection to Ghostface.

Production on Scream 6 is currently underway, and we’ve been treated to a number of casting announcements. While Neve Campbell won’t be returning as Sidney Prescott, a number of newcomers are joining the slasher property including the great Dermot Mulroney. He was recently interviewed by ScreenRant, and let out some details about his character in the upcoming slasher. As he revealed,

Well, I’m definitely intrigued. While Scream 6 will be missing some of the beloved OG characters from Wes Craven’s franchise, it’s exciting to hear what the newcomers will be up to when gracing the big screen next spring. We’ll just have to see if Dermot Mulroney’s character joins the long line of police officers who have been killed by Ghostface in the beloved series.

Dermot Mulroney’s comments about Scream 6 come as he was promoting his new movie Gone in the Night. Eventually the conversation turned to his upcoming entrance into the Scream series especially since there’s been so much chatter about the movie’s cast-- specifically related to Neve Campbell’s absence. While the franchise is known for its tight security, Mulroney was surprisingly loose-lipped about his role. But perhaps that’ll change moving forward.

Public information about the contents of Scream 6 is super limited, which is standard for the slasher property. The official synopsis revealed that the movie will largely focus on the two sets of siblings who survived the last movie: Sam and Tara Carpenter (Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega) and Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding). We’ll follow as they leave Woodsboro for New York City, but smart money says Ghostface is going to follow them.

As previously mentioned, Scream 6 will mark the first chapter in the movie franchise without Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott. And since David Arquette’s Dewey was killed off in the last movie, it looks like Courteney Cox will be the only member of the original trio who will be present. But fans will be treated to the return of another fan favorite character: Scream 4’s Hayden Panettiere is appearing as Kirby Reed.

2022 kicked off with a nostalgic (yet fresh) bloodbath in the form of a new Scream film. Following its commercial success, its creatives are already prepping Scream 6, by lining up the cast, and the movie has found its first new cast member. 

Dermot Mulroney, who most memorably played leading man opposite Julia Roberts in 1997’s My Best Friend’s Wedding, has closed a deal to star in Scream 6, per The Hollywood Reporter. The actor is said to be joining as a cop, which, as fans know, famously has not gone well for survival purposes. 

The 58-year-old actor will join other confirmed cast members Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding and Jenna Ortega, and we’re awaiting news about whether any of the OG cast will come back for another round. Franchise fan-favorite Hayden Panettiere is officially returning as well after previously playing Kirby Reed in 2011's fourth Scream film. Courteney Cox previously shared that she received a script for Scream 6, but we’re not 100% sure if she has signed on to be among the cast yet alongside, hopefully, Neve Campbell. 

Scream 6 re-teams the same creatives behind the recent fifth film, with James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick behind the script, and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directing. The production is expected to begin this summer ahead of a release date already set for spring 2023. The upcoming horror movie will reportedly take the Carpenter sisters away from Woodsboro after the most recent Ghostface killings. But where to? We don’t know quite yet. 

Along with Mulroney having a classic rom-com on his resume, he has over a hundred acting credits. More recently the actor was in Amazon Prime series Hanna, the cancelled The Purge series and the Sandra Oh horror film Umma. New Girl fans will also remember the actor as one of Jess’ boyfriends, Russell, who had numerous guest spots on the series. Mulroney is also expected to be among the Secret Invasion cast.

Considering the usual plotline of Scream revolves around the mystery of how Ghostface is, we, of course, have to mark down Dermot Mulroney’s upcoming Scream character as a suspect. Last time around, Scream 5 certainly played around with our expectations with new killers behind the mask by the end of the film, and sadly one of the original (and most beloved) cast members under their knife. 

The most recent Scream film hit theaters in January 2022 to $140 million worldwide against a reported $24 million budget. The movie remains on the top 15 highest grossing movies of the year as we reach 2022’s halfway mark. Prior to these recent Scream films, it took a little over a decade for Ghostface to appear again. It’s great to see the franchise revitalized, and we’re intrigued at how Dermot Mulroney might fit in. 

In October, after a four-year absence, Eric Andre finally debuted the fifth (maybe final?) season of his notoriously prank-heavy late-night talk show spoof, The Eric Andre Show. And unsurprisingly (and thankfully), the Adult Swim favorite was a much-needed burst of ludicrous nonsense to combat an already insane and intensely nightmarish year.

Continuing to heighten the show's commitment to insanity by featuring an all-new set, an all-new band, a steady stream of high-profile guests, and a rotating round-up of co-hosts, including LaKeith Stanfield, along with a completely hairless, well-tanned host, the intensely loud, aggressively abrasive comedian produced another absurd season of ultra-wacky midnight cable television, complete with even more wild-and-out celebrity "interviews," an abundance on person-on-the-street antics, and an onslaught of nutso and gross-out (and hilarious) moments. Certainly, Andre made up for lost time, producing 10 entertaining new episodes filled with even more utter ridiculousness.

Adam Rippon (Episode 1)

Following Judy Greer's squeamish introductory interview, Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon kicked Season 5 off nicely with his rambunctious back-and-forth with The Eric Andre Show's havoc-loving host.

Featuring some knocking on the shortness of the guest's 2019 memoir, carpet bits raining from the ceiling, a pair of mischievous hands constantly grabbing the guest, and, of course, some tubular bells, this opening interview was a great way to get back in the swing of things for this long-delayed fifth season. It also featured some of Hannibal Buress's best bits this year, particularly as he'd walk away in the next episode, aptly titled "Hannibal Quits."

While it's disappointing that Buress opted to leave, the dry-witted sidekick comedian still gave Season 5 one of its funniest quotes with "You're wearing spiked boots. You're supposed to be fearless!"

Shanola Hampton (Episode 2)

In the parodic talk show's first completely Hannibal-less interview, The Eric Andre Show was in the midst of figuring out its uncertain new direction, particularly after the introduction of Blannibal, Hannibal's menacing, outsized clone. While Shameless' Shanola Hampton's interview isn't one for the ages, it demonstrates the host's unwavering ability to keep his unstable program moving, despite this setback, while also producing more fun, increasingly bewildering antics for his unsuspecting guests.

Filled with constant, increasingly wacky interruptions, notably from PAs and returning sidekick Felipe Esparza, as well as an impromptu mini bat mitzvah before its high-flying finale, this interview was a comforting reassurance that Andre and his assorted crew would continue keeping things light, fast, and funny — even with Hannibal sadly no longer around.

Dermot Mulroney (Episode 4)

Everyone handles The Eric Andre Show differently. Some guests watch it with some odd mixture of enticement and bewilderment, trying to make heads or tails of this whole puzzling spectacle. Some celebrities are visibly annoyed/outright upset by Andre's clownery, with a couple walking out in disgust. And some do their best to play along and have fun, though they find their guard taken down by the sheer onslaught of insane hijinks that ensue over the course of their conversation. For Dermot Mulroney, he tries playing it cool. But it's quickly apparent that he's out of his element, and he's unable to act naturally in this uncomfortable interview.

Ultimately, the vibe is different here since Mulroney's casual awkwardness gets the better of him more so than Andre's general silliness. His verbal discomfort takes the focus, though the main highlight is Lizzo's female reboot of Bird Up — one of Season 5's most outstanding moments. Then, of course, it's time to scream.

Brenda Song (Episode 5)

For my money, Brenda Song's Episode 5 interview might be Season 5's peak. Over the course of two minutes, the former Disney Channel star goes from playful to terrified as our demented host starts marketing H2O2 ("the sequel to water"), goes on a shooting spree against Mountain Deux, challenges the power of God, and eventually threatens to kill a live fish in front of her. And that's before a fast-flying frisbee appears. This interview features some of the show's most absurd, outlandish moments, complete with a seemingly unsuspecting guest who can't contain her fearful uncomfortableness with this perplexing barrage of unrelenting craziness.

Considering that Macaulay Culkin, Song's partner, made a cameo earlier this season, you'd think that Song had some idea what to expect from Andre's gleeful brand of nihilistic debauchery. But if she did, it didn't register on-screen, resulting in some of Season 5's most rollicking and unhinged moments.

Tiffany “New York” Pollard (Episode 6)

With Flavor Flav's Season 4 interview being one of Eric Andre Show's high points, the debauched mock talk show needed to up the ante when Tiffany "New York" Pollard, a Flavor of Love contestant and I Love New York host, stopped by. While they don't do anything as extreme as kicking Flav's face, Andre brings all kinds of hell on New York in this off-the-wall conversation.

Accompanied by co-host Lakeith Stanfield, this free-wielding interview features everything from ping pong balls haphazardly flying across the room to a surprise appearance from celebrity chef Roy Choi to popping balloons in coffee mugs to wild pelicans roaming the studio willy-nilly. And that's without mentioning the dead birds falling from the ceiling. Andre really puts poor Pollard through the wringer, and the reality TV personality's animated expressions and continued reluctance to engage with his misbehavior resulted in one of the season's funniest, most spontaneous interviews.

Tia Carrere (Episode 7)

Wayne's World's Tia Carrere never got as famous as she should've. Thankfully, The Eric Andre Show gave her more time in the spotlight (as well as the hot seat) as she's put through a number of absurd, bombastic occurrences, including airline turbulence with air masks that smell like farts, telepathic explosions, thermometer slurps, and an angry confrontation between Andre and his crew, with the titular host insisting that he didn't give permission to be filmed. Sure enough, bullets flies, cameras smash, bottles break, and fistfights ensue. All the while, Carrere remains confused and disturbed.

While it follows the typical format of an increasingly ridiculous Eric Andre interview, Carrere plays it up beautifully, questioning everything but never backing away from the idiocy of it all. It results in one of Season 5's most delightfully goofy interviews.

Cleopatra Coleman (Episode 8)

Admittedly, Cleopatra Coleman's interview may be more of a personal favorite than one of the season's absolute best, but I'm a sucker for Eric Andre Show interviews that don't actually find time for the guest to speak. Indeed, this is a classic example of an Eric Andre segment that's so caught up in its own absurd tangents that it doesn't leave any room for the guest to get more than a couple of words in before it's over.

Between Felipe Esparza's big personality taking over the room, the introduction of his short person sidekick, Belipe Esparza, scooter hijinks, and Andre's fashion runway walk, which predictably finds him once again in the nude, Coleman can barely get a word in edgewise, and this short-but-hysterical segment is a perfect miniature display of The Eric Andre Show at its most outlandishly berserk and completely nonsensical.

Stormy Daniels (Episode 10)

To wrap up the season (and potentially the series?), Stormy Daniels was the final guest of Eric Andre Show Season 5. But it wasn't long before the controversial adult film star's presence is overshadowed by the show's habit of devolving into silliness, particularly with an elaborate "rest of the interview" celebration paving the way for the return of several season/series favorites, including Hannibal's Brother, Kraft Punk, "Russell Brand," "George Clooney," "Reese Witherspoon," Blannibal, and even Hannibal Buress, who reveals in a shocking twist that he was actually a mirage.

With Daniels now completely ignored, all the present/returning cast members engage in a climactic, celebratory, and, eventually, explosive end-of-the-season musical number, one that suggests that the show might be done. If it's truly over, it had a hell of a run.

Honorable Mentions

Unfortunately, The Eric Andre Show Season 5 had the sad distinction of hosting Naya Rivera's final interview, as the Glee actress tragically passed away this summer. While the mock talk show is known for its mean-spirited irreverence, this posthumous Episode 6 interview was presented in a surprisingly considerate, tasteful fashion, complete with a somber end credits memorial. With that said, the segment stayed true to the parody show's rambunctious spirit, finding the right balance between keeping Andre's zaniness while not being disrespectful or in poor taste.

While it won't be remembered as the funniest Eric Andre Show clip, Rivera's interview became a mindful and respectful tribute, which isn't something you'd expect from Adult Swim's otherwise gleefully obnoxious late-night program.

The world knows actor Dermot Mulroney from a variety of impressive performances he’s given over his diverse resume of films. Films like My Best Friend’s Wedding to About Schmidt, and most recently Amazon’s TV adaptations of the hit podcast Homecoming and the Joe Wright film Hanna, all boast Mulroney in their casts, and the man’s made an amazing career out of such an eclectic collection of roles. But there’s another part he’s played that audiences have definitely experienced, whether they knew it or not, as not only is Mulroney an accomplished cello player, he’s also a frequent collaborator with prolific film composer Michael Giacchino.

As he’s released his sci-fi concept album Travelogue Vol. 1 onto the world, I was able to speak with Mr. Giacchino on behalf of CinemaBlend to discuss that album, as well as his career at large. Being a fan of his work since the early days of the Medal of Honor franchise, as well as the hit J.J. Abrams TV show Alias, there were a bunch of things I wanted to ask the man himself about when landing the opportunity to talk. One such subject was the fact that, quite frequently, Dermot Mulroney will actually play cello for Michael Giacchino's scores, with credits for films like Mission: Impossible III, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and even both Dawn and War For The Planet of the Apes all peppering his musical repertoire. He not only confirmed that relationship with Mulroney, but he also explained how this partnership came to be:

After digging even further into the Dermot Mulroney/Michael Giacchino connection, the results I found were quite staggering. The man has actually played on scores for John Carter, Inside Out, Jurassic World, Tomorrowland, and even Incredibles 2! And before you even ask, yes, Mulroney’s cello can be heard through the scores for both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. So if you’ve ever hoped Dermot Mulroney would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he technically already has; and should Michael Giacchino return for the scoring duties on Spider-Man 3, he probably will again.

Mulroney has been playing the cello since the age of 7, and there’s even been an occasion where his talents in acting and music crossed over to great effect. Thanks to a handful of episodes that Dermot Mulroney starred in for Prime Video’s defunct series Mozart in the Jungle, the character of Andrew Walsh gave the actor a chance to show off those musical chops, while also indulging in his usual levels of charm and style. You can see how Dermot Mulroney has kept himself in the professional company of Michael Giacchino, with cello skills like that making him a valuable collaborator on the various film’s they’ve worked on together. Though, as the composer of other scores like Incredibles II and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol would soon point out, the musical side of Mulroney’s self could be the one that he finds his heart siding with the most. Giacchino explained why he feels that statement is the truth, in the following remarks:

Much as Michael Giacchino frequently pairs up with the same trusted roster of directors, his musical collaborators come from the same sort of magic that sees folks coming together to create new art on a regular basis. if you’re an avid collector of score albums from Hollywood films, and if you’ve got some Giacchino greats on hand in said collection, you might want to read the liner notes a little more carefully. You never know when you’ll next find Dermot Mulroney’s name among the musicians that brought that music to living, vibrant life.

Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney have teamed up, yet again, for a new political and psychological thriller on Amazon Prime, Homecoming. While many will likely remember their work in the runaway hit romantic comedy, My Best Friend's Wedding, which was the first time they worked together, it turns out that Homecoming is a very different animal.

CinemaBlend's Jeff McCobb had the opportunity to speak with Mulroney at the press day for the show, and, according to the actor, this drama marks a real, well, homecoming for them.

What a nice sentiment from Dermot Mulroney, right? Even though tons of people remember that they starred in My Best Friend's Wedding together, they also both appeared in the 2013 drama August: Osage County. However, Mulroney makes note of the fact that there was a large ensemble in play in that film, and he and Julia Roberts never spent any time on that movie in scenes where it was just their two characters. So, while they both technically appeared in that movie (for which Roberts got a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination), they didn't really get to share any kind of on-screen dynamic that would take views back to the first time they paired up.

August: Osage County, which was based on the play of the same name by Tracy Letts, focused on the strong-willed women of the Weston family, who are forced to reunite at the Oklahoma home where they grew up when a family tragedy strikes, leading to them having to deal with the dysfunctional woman who raised them. Along with Roberts and Mulroney, the cast included Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper, Ewan McGregor, Margo Martindale, Juliette Lewis, Abigail Breslin, Sam Shepard and Benedict Cumberbatch. So, after looking at that stacked cast, it's pretty easy to imagine that not everyone involved got to spend quality time on screen together.

As Dermot Mulroney pointed out when he sat down with us, Homecoming gave him a chance to really work with Julia Roberts again. In the series, Mulroney's Anthony is the boyfriend to Heidi, Roberts' character, who is a caseworker at a shadowy government facility which promises to help soldiers return to civilian life. While Anthony is eager to make Heidi happy in their relationship, he's also quite needy and becomes increasingly frustrated with her lack of attention to their relationship, especially where he and his feeling are concerned.

The story takes a real turn for Heidi years after she has quit the facility and is living with her mother while working as a small town waitress. An auditor from the DOD has questions for her about why she left, and Heidi is then forced to confront some troubling truths about her former job. Homecoming also stars Stephan James, Shea Whigham, Sissy Spacek, Bobby Cannavale and Alex Karpovsky, and was directed by Mr. Robot's Sam Esmail.

While Homecoming certainly sounds like a straight-on drama, both stars were surprised by how the heavy, twisty plot often led to funny, quirky moments that kept you fully invested in the action. Julia Roberts also spoke to us about the show, and had this to say:

Mulroney, for his part, said that as he watched the finished product he found himself more taken in by what was going on than he can usually find himself, even when watching a show or movie that he enjoys.

I can't help but wonder if some of this "Oh, cool!" feeling came to Dermot Mulroney courtesy of the increased screen time for he and Julia Roberts. The first time the duo paired up, their on-screen chemistry helped make My Best Friend's Wedding one of the top 10 films of 1997. The romantic comedy featured Roberts' character, Julianne, realizing that she's in love withe her best friend Michael (Mulroney, of course), but only after he's asked someone else to marry him and then invited Julianne to the big, happy, multi-day event. She heads to the festivities, but only has selfish thoughts of stopping the wedding and trying to nab Michael for herself. The movie made almost $300 million worldwide, so no one should doubt the impact that Mulroney and Roberts can have when they work on the right project together.

So, which character is it and how long will he be sticking around? Here is what you need to know.

Dermot Mulroney has signed on to star as the dad of Alberto Frezza's Ryan Tanner. And there are a few details about Ryan's pop that have already been shared that put a little context to the father and son's dynamic. While his son is a police officer, Mr. Tanner has not always been on the right side of the law Ryan has sworn to enforce, per TVLine. So, that sounds like the foundation for some potential conflict.

And sure enough, the description mentions that his father's relationship with the law has impacted his standing with Ryan. As for his personality, Mr. Tanner is described as being "sharp-witted, perceptive, and wickedly smart," all of which should come in pretty handy in life. Well, that and his charm, which is said to be capable of getting him out of almost any situation he finds himself in hot water over. Another crucial attribute for getting through life!

Speaking of life, Dermot Mulroney's Station 19 character will be returning following a considerable absence. To build on that, his return to town will take everyone who knows him by surprise. What exactly has brought him back after all this time away is not exactly clear. Maybe he just wants to check in with his son and see how he is doing for himself. Or it could be that combined with a more secret motive.

Either way, Station 19 fans are destined to learn more when he makes his debut on the series. The good news for fans of the show and Dermot Mulroney is that he will be sticking around for a while, as his arc on the drama is said to span multiple episodes. Given Ryan's role on the show, one could imagine Mulroney making more appearances in the future. Presuming, of course, that Mulroney's character survives the arc he already has in the works. We found out last year that movie star Julia Roberts would be heading to Amazon for the TV series Homecoming, and now we know that the show will actually reunite her with one of her costars from the 1997 hit comedy My Best Friend's Wedding. Actor Dermot Mulroney has also signed on for a role in the new drama.

In Homecoming, which is a political and psychological thriller based on Gimlet Media's fictional podcast of the same name that began in November 2016, Julia Roberts will play Heidi, a caseworker at a secret government facility, while Dermot Mulroney will take on the part of her boyfriend Anthony. According to Entertainment Weekly, his character is described as being eager to please in their relationship but also somewhat needy, and Anthony will eventually become more and more frustrated with Heidi's lack of attention in regards to both him and the relationship. The show will follow Heidi, her supervisor and a soldier eagerly looking to get back to civilian life.

Dermot Mulroney has been a staple in movies and on television for over 30 years. The actor is probably most recognizable from his recent appearances in shows like New Girl, Shameless, LA to Vegas and Mozart in the Jungle, but his career has also included work in Dirty Grandpa, Insidious: Chapter 3, J. Edgar, Burn After Reading, Friends and Angels in the Outfield. Along with costarring with Julia Roberts in My Best Friend's Wedding, he also reunited with her on the big screen in August: Osage County in 2013. In addition to homecoming, Mulroney has four projects set to debut in the near future.

Well, it sounds like Homecoming will see Julia Roberts' and Dermot Mulroney's characters have a very different dynamic from the one they shared in My Best Friend's Wedding. In that film, Roberts' character, Julianne, realized she was in love with Mulroney's Michael just after he announced his plan to marry someone else and invited her to the wedding. Julianne heads to the festivities, but since this is a romantic comedy, she only goes with the intent of sabotaging the ceremony. The film was a huge hit, and went on to become one of the 10 top films of 1997, with a worldwide gross of almost $300 million.

Homecoming got a 10 episode order and scored a two-season, straight-to-series pickup from Amazon. Dermot Mulroney is also joining the previously cast Stephen James, Alex Karpovsky and Bobby Cannavale in the drama, which is executive produced by Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot), Julia Roberts and podcast creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, who also wrote the series. The show is set to hit Amazon sometime this year.

All things must come to an end, including popular TV shows. Because unless you're Grey's Anatomy or Doctor Who, long running shows have to conclude eventually. This year will bring the end of Fox's hit comedy New Girl, bringing Zooey Deschanel's star vehicle to a conclusion after seven seasons on the network. While Season 7 doesn't currently have a premiere date, details are slowly being released for the final installment in New Girls' story. One guest actor is making a return to the series for the first time since back in Season 2: Dermot Mulroney will reprise his role as Russell "Fancyman" Shiller in the final season of New Girl.

This news comes to us from TV Line, which reports Russell's long awaited return to the series. Dermot Mulroney seemed to really fit in during his 5-episode arc in Season 2, so fans will no doubt be thrilled to see Fancyman return to The Loft after all these years. But how exactly will Russell factor into the show's narrative?

Back in New Girl Season 2, Russell was one of the many partners who held Nick and Jess back from being a full blown couple. He was essentially Emily from Friends, except way more likable. In fact, Russell even got to play a ridiculous game of "True American" with the roommates, which is an honor few guest actors have had on the series. Russell's exit made way for the two protagonists to finally become a couple, although their random breakup was inevitable.

Since Jess and Nick broke up, fans have been forced to watch their drawn out unrequited love story. And with Dermot Mulroney's Russell returning next season, perhaps he'll mirror his role back in Season 2. Jess was getting up the courage to tell Nick about her feelings for him in the Season 6 finale, with his feelings for Megan Fox's Reagan preventing her from making a move. If Nick and Jess are still doing their will they/won't they nonsense after Season 7's time jump, maybe her ex-boyfriend can tell them to cut the crap and end up together. It would definitely be a moment fans would love.

New Girl had an interesting go last season. After having a delayed premiere, Season 6 saw Jess exit the show for a handful of episodes after being called for jury duty. The show was predictably awkward without Zooey Deschanel, who was on maternity leave in reality. And while Megan Fox joined the show to mix things up, there was a lull in viewership without the titular New Girl on the show. It was unclear if the show would be renewed for Season 7, but luckily the show will have a proper conclusion this coming year.

The Star Wars franchise has never shied away from including a ton of awesome cameos in its films. From George Lucas and his son appearing in the prequel trilogy, to hidden gems like Simon Pegg and Daniel Craig in The Force Awakens, Star Wars has simply become a cultural institution that attracts familiar faces. Now it seems that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is no different. We've just learned that Dermot Mulroney had a secret hand in the film's production by contributing to its score.

A report from The Los Angeles Times confirms that Dermot Mulroney contributed to the musical score for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Although he's best known for his acting work in motion pictures such as My Best Friend's Wedding, The Wedding Date, and Insidious: Chapter 3, Mulroney has actually been a musician longer than an actor, and he has been a frequent collaborator with Rogue One composer Michael Giacchino for years. He has been featured on a number of Giacchino's movie scores over the years -- such as Mission: Impossible and Star Trek -- so the new Star Wars composer brought the actor in to provide his cello chops for the Rogue One soundtrack.

Aside from Dermot Mulroney's involvement in Rogue One's production, the film's musical score has seen a number of fascinating and tumultuous developments over the course of its existence. When it was revealed that John Williams would not return to score the first standalone Star Wars movie, the film initially brought Alexandre Desplat (the composer responsible for the music heard in movies like Argo, as well as Grand Budapest Hotel) on-board to score the eighth Star Wars film. However, Desplat eventually departed the project after a series of scheduling conflicts brought on by Rogue One's extensive reshoots, resulting in Michael Giacchino's last minute hire. Although he had very little time to finalize his work on Rogue One's score, we have to say that Giacchino definitely pulled it off with Mulroney's help -- not to mention the countless other musicians who contributed to the orchestral musical accompaniment,

A few years back, the 2011 French action thriller, Sleepless Night made waves across the pond and everywhere else, thanks to its stripped-down, gritty intensity that seemed to hearken back to a pre-CGI era of film, while adding elements of modernity. Thus, Hollywood swooping in with a remake was inevitable.

However, the cast to this Americanized actioner starring Jamie Foxx is actually coming along impressively. With a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter announcing even more additions, let's take a look at the growing lineup.

Jamie Foxx as "Vincent Downs"

Jamie Foxx stars in writer/director, Frederic Jardin’s intrigue-instilled thriller about a police detective who decides to give into "victimless crime" temptations and steel a big bag of cocaine from some couriers. However, unbeknownst to him, the bag belongs to a powerful drug lord who, in turn, kidnaps the wayward Las Vegas copper’s son, threatening execution should his property not be returned.

However, if this film is anything like the original, the simple act of getting the drugs back will entail destructive encounters with other parties who each have their own agendas for impeding Vincent's errand, as he fights his way across unorthodox locales like a crowded, noisy nightclub and a kitchen.

Michelle Monaghan as "Unnamed Internal Affairs Agent"

Vincent certainly acts like a crooked cop, though his motivations might be touched with a bit of beneficence. It will be the job of Monaghan’s Internal Affairs investigator to determine where he stands.

Having graced a number of big-budget films in the past, like Mission: Impossible III and Eagle Eye, the actress has taken a lower key turn as of late, though she had a notable run last year on HBO’s True Detective. That, however, will change with her role in this summer’s Pixels, which she will follow up with this role in Sleepless Night.

T.I. as "Vincent’s Partner"

The entertainment M.O. "rapper turned actor" is hardly a unique one, however, T.I. seems to be taking a slow-but-steady path in the actor direction. With recurring television roles on Boss and House of Lies, he’ll complement an appearance in the upcoming Marvel property, Ant-Man, with this role in Sleepless Night as the police partner of Jamie Foxx’s embattled protagonist.

A venerable mainstay in television and films such as My Best Friend’s Wedding, Zodiac, and About Schmidt, Mulroney makes a magnificent addition to the cast. He will play the iniquitous aforementioned drug dealer who nabs Vincent’s son for his plot-critical ransoming.

Scoot McNairy as "Unnamed Gangster/Kidnapper"

Mulroney’s partner in literal crime will be played by McNairy. While showcasing a long resume, the Texas-born actor only just recently found himself breaking into notable projects such as 12 Years a Slave, Argo, and is a primary cast member on the television series Halt and Catch Fire. He’s also set for an appearance in next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before taking this villainous role in Sleepless Night.

David Harbour as "Unknown"

Sporting one of those faces that most people will know, very few casual moviegoers will likely be able to name Harbour. However, he has, indeed, spent several years being "that guy" in television shows and notable films such as 2014’s The Equalizer, Quantum of Solace, and Brokeback Mountain. Perhaps there is something more memorably identifiable in store for Harbour here than his repertory "that guy" role.

Gabrielle Union as "Unnamed Suporting Role"

The perennial, seemingly un-aging love interest in many a movie going back well into the 1990’s, Union will step into this film for an unspecified supporting role. Remembered for roles in Bad Boys II, Bring It On, and starring in the current BET television series Being Mary Jane, it might be a safe assumption that the vivacious vixen is playing the wife or love interest of Foxx’s Vincent.

That’s the rundown of the cast, thus far. It certainly will be interesting to see how it develops and possibly diverges from the original film, at least in terms of its signature stylistics, minimalism, and its ambitious across-one-day timeframe. The movie will be helmed by a Swedish director by the name of Baran bo Odar, working off a script by Straight Outta Compton and World Trade Center writer Andrea Beloff. While there’s no timeframe regarding a release date, Sleepless Night will reportedly begin shooting on June 15 in Atlanta and Las Vegas. Consequently, 2016 seems a safe bet.

Dermot Mulroney has signed on for a recurring role in Shameless's fifth season, which is expected to air in 2015. From the character description it sounds like he'll play a potential -- ok, most likely eventual -- love interest to Fiona. Spoiler alert if you're not caught up on Shameless through Season 4!

With the character's potential to be Fiona's love interest, it should come as no surprise that the role Mulroney has been tapped to play has some bad-boy tendencies. From what Showtime has revealed about "Sean Pierce," he's trying to stay on the straight and narrow path. Sean is the new manager at Patsy's Pies and he's described as an "ex-bad boy and recovering addict." Anyone who knows Emmy Rossum's character well enough is likely to guess that she'll be drawn to Sean if she picks up even the slightest whiff of a dark side. It sounds like Fiona and Sean's relationship gets flirty and tension eventually starts to grow.

This could be a recipe for pie with a side of disaster. Or it could be a brilliant match-up. Fiona is constantly battling her impulsive nature and inner demons, and she's made more than a few bad judgment calls in the past. In Season 4, one of those calls was getting involved with the bad-boy brother of her boyfriend Mike (Jake McDorman). Robbie was trouble with a capital T, and one more mistake in a series of bad choices for Fiona, especially when the cocaine-present he gave her landed Liam in the hospital. And of course, the tryst caused Fiona and Mike's relationship to implode. Mike was a good guy. That was never going to last. And the affair with Robbie was doomed as well. So, how will Fiona do with a man who has bad-boy tendencies but is trying to fight them? They could be a perfect match, or the exact wrong thing for one another. We'll find out.

While Dermot Mulroney got his start in feature films, with credits that include Bad Girls, My Best Friends Wedding and About Schmidt, he's shifted over to television in recent years, with recurring roles in Enlightened and New Girl, and a starring role in NBC's Crisis. On the feature side, he's currently filming Insidious 3: Into the Further. Apparently, production on the horror film won't conflict with his Shameless schedule. The Showtime drama is currently in production for Season 5 now.

Dermot Mulroney was also the subject of a relatively recent Saturday Night Live sketch that involved a game show where contestants were tasked with determining which celebrity was Dylan McDermott and which was Dermot Mulroney. Watch that after the jump...

While everybody and their mother remembers Dermot Mulroney from his role as the best friend in My Best Friend's Wedding, the actor has actually has quite a diverse career on his resume. Most recently, he could be seen in the family dramedy August: Osage County, a film about a family ready to tear itself apart during a time of crisis. It looks like that gig was merely a warm up for his latest role, as he's just been announced as one of the stars of Leigh Whannell's directoral debut, Insidious: Chapter 3.

The announcement was made through an official press release from Focus Features, as well as an announcement from Whannell's Twitter feed. As you can see by the text below, the first time director is extremely amped to have Mulroey on-board.

The continuation of the strong performing/low budget horror franchise will show the exploits of a new family, more than likely meaning that Dermot Mulroney will be filling the paternal shoes of Patrick Wilson, who has a new horror franchise brewing with The Conjuring 2 (which is being directed by former Insidious helmer James Wan). Insidious 3 will, however, mark the return of the paranormal team of Specs, Tucker, and Elise, who despite her death in the first film, is still a vital part of the team. After all, this is a ghost hunting franchise, and that's the perfect venue for the old "previous installment's character comes back as a ghost" trick. Not to mention it's kind of cool to have a ghost on your ghost hunting team... just ask Michael J. Fox!

While I'm not a fan of the Insidious franchise, I do know that Insidious: Chapter 3 is a dead certain moneymaker for the series' new home at Focus Features. Both previous installments were released independently under the FilmDistrict banner, with Sony Pictures handling the home video releases. This installment has the potential to be the series' highest grossing entry, with the $100 million mark not far off domestically if the film can only slightly improve on the last film's $83.5 million domestic take.

Which leads to why casting Dermot Mulroney is such a brilliant move for Insidious: Chapter 3. While this is the furthest thing from stunt casting, having Mulroney in the film has a sort of novelty factor to it - especially considering that the closest he's come to starring in a horror picture was his small role in the Chan Wook Park's family-centric thriller Stoker. Come to think of it, a lot of his biggest roles have been in films dealing with families, The Family Stone and About Schmidt included. So what better way to boost the presence of your family-centric horror franchise than to cast one of the top actors in the family-centric film business? If this works, does this mean we might not be far off from seeing Jodie Foster in Insidious: Chapter 4?

We get our fair share of dysfunctional families on the big screen, but very few to the extent of the Burnetts in The Family Tree. Dermot Mulroney stars as the papa bear, Jack. When his wife, Bunnie (Hope Davis), gets knocked out during some naughty and unfaithful role-playing, Jack finds her at the hospital unable to remember anything that happened after they were married. While trying to bring Bunnie up-to-date, Jack also must keep an eye on his gun-loving and borderline religious fanatic of a son, Eric (Max Thieriot), and his daughter, Kelly (Britt Robertson), who’s enjoying exploring her romantic options.

In honor of The Family Tree’s August 26th release in New York and Los Angeles, Mulroney took the time to talk a bit about making the film. With dozens of titles to his name, Mulroney’s experience working on set has undoubtedly changed over the years. Sure, some things are tougher as there tend to be fewer resources to go around, but the additional pressure also keeps the cast and crew on their toes, propelling their effort to bring the audience the best possible final product.

Check out what Mulroney had to say about re-teaming with his good friend Hope Davis, overcoming his past troubles learning the lines, what he’s working on next and much more in the interview below.

What was it that drew you in for this one? Is there anything specific about Jack you connected to?

Dermot Mulroney: Well, I like old Jack. He has his tiny little world and he thinks everything’s working out okay and then obviously he realizes, ultimately, you have to make a little more effort in your life. I can relate to that. I liked the movie as a whole and really responded to the director when I met her. You know what I like about The Family Tree is it’s a kitchen sink movie; you can’t think of anything that it doesn’t either throw into the story for conflict or poke fun at or attack even, so I like it. It’s like an aggressive comedy [laughs], aggressively attacking these issues of race and crime and Christianity and guns, the list goes on and on.

In most of the movies I know you from, you play the straight man even if the film involves some absurd situations. That’s somewhat the case here, but you definitely get to show off a sillier side; was that appealing?

It was and that was something that [director] Vivi [Friedman] really wanted in the role. What’s interesting about Jack were the things that he didn’t do or the things that he wasn’t good at like being a father to his kids. Sometimes those zeros are hard to portray. If you’re a criminal and you have to climb a fence and dig a tunnel and rob a bank, that’s not a zero, that’s a positive. But to be playing a guy who doesn’t do anything, it can be a trap, it can be a real challenge for an actor, so she and I both recognized that and wanted to make him as actively passive as possible. Maybe that’s even over thinking it, but to address your question, yes, we deliberately brought in as much of the fool in that character as possible, otherwise I feel that he may have just laid there in the film a little bit.

This is that kind of movie where all these crazy things are happening, but everyone’s playing their characters so straight and that’s what makes it funny.

That’s what we were shooting for, for sure. Another side effect of that is it can be somehow more impacting to an audience, if you recognize that the characters in the movie are missing the thing so then you, the audience, are the ones reacting to it for the first time rather than passively witnessing somebody else’s reaction to it, another character’s reaction to it.

How about those other characters? When you were considering joining the cast, had anyone else signed on?

Hope Davis and I are friends because we worked together on About Schmidt, so we were in touch when I knew that they were pursuing her for the role. We talked and, you know, I guess that has us playing husband and wife twice now and I don’t think we really act like that in real life because we’re just genuine friends, but we checked with each other [laughs], and made a decision together. Maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but once I knew Hope was doing it, I was determined to take the job.

How is that for you having a relationship with her outside of work and then having to alter it to fit the material?

It’s actually a real blast, especially in the case of Hope, because she’s obviously one of our great actresses, but also a great friend and sweet and smart and hilarious, all that you’d expect that she is. To go into a project knowing the person already and then slipping into the characters that we’re assigned that time is really fun, especially in light of the characters that we played in About Schmidt, which were significantly of a different ilk.

How about your kids in the film? Did you get to spend any time with them beforehand to build that relationship?

[Laughs] That was not the case at all. It was kind of like where you pull up in your car to the set for the first time and then you shake the hand of the kid that’s playing your son and then they roll camera. So, very little prep time; I don’t remember precisely why, where I was that I couldn’t do rehearsal, but that’s more often the case than not. That’s how it’s done these days. You just have to be prepared and know what you want and be quick and intuitive to see what the other actor’s doing, so hopefully those two things go together.

Considering you didn’t get much rehearsal time, is it safe to assume that it’s the same case for shooting time?

Oh, of course. Everybody is now, even the big movies. The days where you luxuriously had 20 takes because you felt like you wanted a couple more to make sure, I haven’t worked that way in years. Even the bigger budgeted movies, the actual camera time that the camera is running is pretty short these days.

Would you say this changed your preparation process or how you approach your work while on set?

Yeah, it has actually. There’s a lot less time to get things wrong, so you have to be that much more prepared whether it’s learning your lines, which I’ve had trouble with a couple of times over the years, but now I wouldn’t dream of going on a set where you think you can just sort of remember them or you can brush up in the makeup trailer and shoot it. No way, because, those few times that I have blown a scene for not remembering lines, it’s so avoidable.

Did you find any scene particularly difficult to shoot?

The home invasion scene was really fun and if we had any trouble it’s because we all kept laughing. That’s all I can think of.

Do you prefer the scenes that are more choreographed like that?

Yeah, definitely. Something like that, you need to have it pretty well choreographed because there’s six, eight, I don’t know, ten people in that scene with a lot of movement. Those are fun and it’s fun to see how a director’s gonna approach them. So I do prefer that than standing on a street talking or sitting at the dining room table.

Do you like to be aware of technical elements, like where the camera is?

Yeah, I’m always aware of how it’s being shot, how the filmmakers are going about it, yeah. It’s just a part of the job for me. It’s not something I can avoid noticing.

Considering that, how was it shooting that Ferris wheel scene? Are you really on a Ferris wheel?

Yeah, they actually mounted a camera onto a cheap little Ferris wheel, one of those county fair or church carnival type of Ferris wheels. The Ferris wheel you see in the movie is us on there. The camera’s being operated remotely; there’s not a cameraman looking through the lens. There’s a number of shots in that sequence, but the one that’s closest on us is just a lock off camera on the actual Ferris wheel car that we’re in … And, frankly, that’s probably the only way they could afford it.

Did you notice any other corners that had to be cut because of the tight budget?

Well, you probably noticed there weren’t 300 extras at that carnival. We all knew we had to try to make it look as lightly crowded as possible. But things like that, you either have the money for $100 a piece per person plus food; it’s a lot of money if you want that to look like a really crowded fair. In fact, I remember producers and the director, not arguing, but trying to figure out how best to solve that. So there’s some things like that in this movie, where it’s not as much. There’s some coverage missing just because of time. You can see a couple of scenes where you’re wondering why you’re not seeing somebody in close-up when you’re seeing the other person and usually that’s not because the editor didn’t think it was a good cut, it’s because the footage doesn’t exist. A lot of movies, you know, just fall short of time and money.

As for your upcoming projects, when I scheduled this interview, I believe they said you were about to shoot something. Is that Struck by Lightning?

No, Struck by Lightning I finished and that’s a supporting role playing Chris Colfer’s father in a really good script that he wrote, so that was a really interesting job and then next week I travel to Nashville to do, again, a small supporting part, but in a really cool movie called Stoker that has Matthew Goode, Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman in the lead parts and I play a small part of – ah, I can’t even tell you; it’d give the whole thing away. Suffice to say, it’s a high-tension horror thriller type of movie.

When you consider how the film careers of most pop stars pan out, one has to admit that Mandy Moore has done quite well for herself. While she's never put on what people would consider an Oscar worthy performance and has done quite a few bad films, she does consistently get work and starred in one of my favorite movies from last year, Tangled. You get the sense that she could be doing a lot more with her career, but unfortunately she keeps making movies like Love Wedding Marriage.

Yahoo! has premiered the first trailer for the upcoming romantic comedy, which sees Moore star alongside Kellan Lutz, James Brolin, Jane Seymour and Jessica Szohr. In the film, Moore plays a relationship counselor who his suddenly hit with two pieces of life changing news: her parents are getting divorced and her boyfriend has proposed. Finding herself invested in trying to get her parents back together before their anniversary party, she finds herself and her fiancee growing apart.

I think it would be hyperbole to say that this movie looks bad, but it does look exceedingly mediocre. We've seen the situations before and even the jokes are repetitive. Dermot Mulroney, who directed the film, also seems to really like close-ups, as you can practically count the pores on all of the actors' faces. It's entirely possible that Love Wedding Marriage could be a surprise, but if that's the case, this trailer isn't selling it well.

Apparently Joe Carnahan and Liam Neeson really liked working together on this past summer's The A-Team because the pair is set to reunite for Carnahan's next film. Titled The Grey, the director has just gotten a greenlight on the project that will feature a group of rough oil-workers who are stranded in the Alaskan tundra and forced to face down a pack of hungry wolves after a plane crashes. According to Deadline, joining Neeson in the cast are Dallas Roberts, James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, Nonso Anozie, and Joe Anderson. The film is being described as a "down and dirty indie" with Carnahan referencing Deliverance and Touching The Void when talking about the project.

It's kind of weird to watch how Neeson's career has evolved in recent years. The man was the star of Schindler's List, but now seems much happier taking action roles in movies like Taken, Unknown, Battleship and the aforementioned A-Team. Considering the guy is 58 years old and a total badass, I say more power to him.

Back when Meet The Parents first came out, I had high aspirations for Teri Polo. Surrounded by stars like Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner and Owen Wilson, she truly managed to hold her own, both in comedic and dramatic moments. Fast forward to 10 years later and with the second sequel to come out, the biggest movie that she's done since 2000 was Meet The Fockers. With Little Fockers (hopefully) the last in the trilogy, Polo should probably start booking some gigs, and apparently it starts with this one.

THR reports that Polo and Dermot Mulroney have on to a thriller titled Beyond. The film co-stars Jon Voight and Julian Morris and is being directed by Joseph Rusnak. In the film, a veteran detective and television psychic work together to try and find a lost child. Polo plays Voight's daughter and mother of the missing child and Mulroney's role is unknown. The film has already begun production in Alaska.

So it's not exactly a blockbuster that's going to rake in hundreds of millions, but it could be good with the proper script. There are worse roles to play than being Jon Voight's daughter - after all, that's how Angelina Jolie got her start.

Dermot Mulroney been in enough family/romantic comedies (My Best Friend’s Wedding, Family Stone, Georgia Rule) that it was only a matter of time before he took a stab at directing one of his own. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s just finished tweaking his cast for Love, Wedding, Marriage, a romantic dramedy set to start filming on April 19th. Mulroney has cast Mandy Moore (License to Wed) in the lead as a newlywed marriage counselor looking to save her own parents from an impending divorce. Along with Moore, Kellan Lutz (of Twilight-series hunkdom) will play her husband, while James Brolin and Jane Seymour will play the splitting parents.

The cast and financing have been in a constant state of flux since the movie’s inception, and while the former is still getting ironed out, the latter is set to go. Mulroney has a plethora of acting credits, but has never stepped behind the camera before. At least he picked a cast that’ll be easy on the eyes.

When casting agents are looking for a young female lead, presumably they have dozens upon dozens of relatively famous young actresses who can star in a movie. So why do they all keep settling on Jessica Alba? According to Production Weekly's Twitter, Alba is in talks to star in First Wedding, Then Marriage, a comedy that will serve as actor Dermot Mulroney's directorial debut.

You may remember our report from last May, which announced that Christopher Walken and Blythe Danner had signed on to play the parents of a marriage counselor whose worldview is rocked when they decide to get divorced. Now, Jessica Alba has played some roles that stretch credulity-- a professional violinist in The Eye, for example-- but for some reason marriage counselor seems like the craziest of all. Not to mention the notion of Alba, the child of Mexican and French-Danish parents, playing the kid of WASP poster girl Danner and Walken. But hey, maybe this is that Hollywood magic everyone's always talking about.

Dermot Mulroney-- you remember that guy, right? Y'know, he was the date in The Wedding Date, the brother who wasn't Luke Wilson or the gay deaf one in The Family Stone, and some guy named Gavin on Friends. OK, so maybe you saw none of these movies, and never knew this guy existed. Mulroney has a plan for that! Namely, he's going to become a director, meaning that he can either set himself free from the middling movies he's starred in, or make one of his own.

He'll step behind the director's chair for Keep It Together, a comedy-drama about a young marriage counselor who based everything she knew on her parents' happy marriage, until she discovers that Mom (Blythe Danner) and Dad (Christopher Walken) are getting a divorce. THR writes that producers are still casting the young female lead, who could conceivably be as old as Danner's real-life daughter Gwyneth Paltrow, or as young as, like, Ellen Page.

I like the idea of Danner and Walken as a married couple, mostly because Walken doing much of anything sounds appealing. As for the concept of the movie? Eh. All involved could probably do better. But maybe these are just the conditions for them to surprise us.
