Olivia Wilde has a hit on the 2026 movie schedule, with critics raving about the latest Seth Rogen movie, The Invite. It's a big win for Wilde, who talked about how the movie came about in part because she followed up one of her greatest movies with the somewhat infamous Don't Worry Darling.

Readers may remember Wilde's directorial debut with Booksmart, and how many praised it as the equivalent of Superbad for young women. The actress and director told Variety about how the success is welcome and a "blessing", but it can also come with some downsides as well:

It seemed things would only go up from there, but then came Don't Worry Darling, in which her behind-the-scenes marriage drama and on-set tensions piled onto a movie that critics largely panned. While the film received some praise for its performances, the overall story for it was deemed lacking and unworthy of the hype it generated.

Now removed from all the drama of that project, Olivia Wilde talked about how going from Booksmart to Don't Worry Darling helped pave the way for The Invite. It may sound odd to say, but she explained, when talking about the bad reviews the film received for various reasons:

That liberation led to The Invite, in which Olivia Wilde directs and stars alongside Seth Rogen in an A24 comedy with a a stressful trailer. The whole thing goes off the rails when their neighbors, played by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, propose they all engage in an extramarital affair. If that sounds familiar, the movie is a remake of the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs. A fun concept, but probably not one to invite any neighbors over to watch, unless you're into that sort of thing.

It's a great lesson for budding directors in Hollywood that success isn't always assured and can be difficult to sustain. I'm sure that Olivia Wilde would've loved to have Don't Worry Darling get as much love as Booksmart and The Invite, but I think the main takeaway was that having the follow-up fumble at the box office wasn't the death knell of Wilde's directing career. She's back on top again with another hit, and while she may make another flop in the future, it looks like she has the right mindset now, knowing that it ultimately means nothing as to what comes next.

It’s been more than a half decade since Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis ended their relationship, and for better or for worse, the general public’s collective fascination has never gone away. The interest has, of course, ebbed and flowed a bit, but it’s never gone fully dormant, as we’re seeing right now following an interview, a burst of media attention and anonymous source quotes making the rounds.

This recent chatter started with a podcast appearance from Wilde. She’s promoting her new film, The Invite, and during a conversation on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she talked about when she knew the relationship was over. More specifically, she said Sudeikis didn’t get her a birthday gift because they didn’t even know each other anymore.

Her actual quote is a little more complicated (and we discuss it in depth here). I suspect the goal of her story was to talk about reaching the point in a relationship where you’re disconnected, but a lot of fans focused more on the Sudeikis not buying her a gift part and/ or inferred it was a sign he had checked out of their marriage.

Wilde’s quotes were almost immediately everywhere, as were thousands upon thousands of hot takes. Not surprisingly, fans have wanted to hear Sudeikis’ side, but he hasn’t spoken on the record since the interview. Popular ex-publicist turned gossip columnist Rob Shuter from the Naughty But Nice podcast, however, says he’s spoken to sources connected to Sudeikis. They’re allegedly claiming he’s not happy and doesn’t get how any conversation about how their relationship ended doesn’t involve Harry Styles.

That quote and a few others about how Sudeikis allegedly doesn’t want to keep having this conversation in public for the sake of their kids have been picked up by Yahoo, InTouch and more. Since Sudeikis hasn’t gone on the record, we can’t be sure how he really feels, but clearly, a lot of fans are giving some weight to these anonymous quotes.

Regardless, I’m not sure we’ll ever know Styles and Wilde’s true, unfiltered opinions on their relationship or the actualities of what happened. Their relationship ended in 2020. She's always been clear that things ended with Sudeikis before they started with Styles, but that hasn't stopped people from speculating about the timeline and a whole host of other things.

All that chatter became arguably the most discussed story in the entertainment world in 2022 during the Don’t Worry Darling press tour. In the lead-up to the movie, you couldn’t get on the internet without seeing a dozen stories about their personal lives.

From Wilde’s romance with the aforementioned Harry Styles, who also starred in the movie, to alleged drama between Wilde and actress Florence Pugh to the “spitgate” scandal between Styles and Chris Pine, the stories became increasingly more outrageous. Even the couple’s nanny was interviewed.

Since the Booksmart director and the One Direction alum broke up in 2022, Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis have allegedly been able to repair their relationship enough for cordial co-parenting — they were even seen hugging it out in 2023 — so hopefully this latest resurfacing of their past drama doesn’t cause too much of a backslide.

It sounds like her work on The Invite, which she directed and stars in, allowed her to explore some aspects of her relationship with Sudeikis. As she also shared:

After country music star Ella Langley’s music video “Choosin’ Texas” went viral last week for its lovelorned tale starring Luke Grimes and Ava Phillipe, it seems like this is a recent trend rather than a coincidence.

Now Laufey has entered the chat, and while the celebrity cameos are A+, I can’t get over how similar the music video is to a certain Florence Pugh movie.

Laufey Assembled An All-Star Cast Full Of Asian-American Representation

After teasing her upcoming project all week, Laufey released the music video for her song “Madwoman” on April 13, and she recruited some of the biggest Asian-North American celebrities to round out her cast.

The Asian-Icelandic song writer recruited The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Lola Tung, Megan Skiendal from Katseye, and USA gold medalist Alysa Liu, the latter of whom famously used Laufey’s song “Promise” in her figure skating short program at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

However, fans freaked out when the “Lover Girl” singer announced Heated Rivalry’s Hudson Williams would be playing her “madman.” The Canadian actor is one of the buzziest names in Hollywood right now thanks to his breakout performance in the popular gay hockey show, making him the perfect leading man.

Also included in the narrative were Bottoms actress Havana Rose Liu and I Know What You Did Last Summer’s Chase Sui Wonders, who appeared on fake tabloid covers, making for fun easter eggs.

Holy crossover, what I would have given to be in the room where it happened! These aren’t just big stars, they’re the next generation of Asian representation in Hollywood. They’re also all at the top of their respective industries right now.

Not to mention, this is an extremely attractive cast, and don’t even get me started on the slow motion shot of Williams lifting his shirtless self out of the pool. They all look so good in their ‘50s outfits, the colorful dresses, headbands and go-go boots, which brings me to my next point: we need to talk about the themes and storytelling in this video.

I Couldn’t Get Over The Don’t Worry Darling Vibes

Laufey’s “Madwoman” is eerily similar to the 2022 psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling, starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. From the mid-century modern outfits and decor, the video theme is clearly in line with ‘50s So-Cal suburbia, which matches that of Don’t Worry Darling’s simulation town of Victory. That alone is not enough to connect the two pieces of media though, and I was really struck by the plot parallels about halfway through the music video.

For context, Laufey’s lyrics in “Madwoman” talk about how she knows it’s a bad idea to re-involve herself with such a deceptive lover, yet he always convinces her to stay. She describes herself as being “vexed” and “hypnotized” by him, very similar themes found in Olivia Wilde’s film.

The video reflects these lyrics, showing the charming Williams exhibit certain red flags, but still causing everyone to swoon around him. Check it out:

Everything seems so perfect, including the moment the Heated Rivalry star gets down on one knee, up until Laufey backs up into a ceramic bust, which falls and shatters on the pool deck. At that moment, everyone in this idyllic scene freezes but Laufey, who has been brought back to reality by the crash.

It immediately reminded me of the moment Alice breaks an egg in her hand in Don’t Worry Darling, realizing it’s just a hollow shell. It’s one of many cracks in the simulated utopia that start to pull her out of her daze, warning signs that her husband Jack is not what he pretends to be.

However, the final scene of Laufey’s video solidifies for me the Don’t Worry Darling influence. After realizing it’s all a ruse, Laufey drives off in a vintage car, until suddenly the road ends, and she stops short in front of an endless black pit. There are limits to the world she’s in... where have I seen this before?

Oh that’s right! Florence Pugh drives off in a vintage car until she reaches the edge of Victory, where there is a portal to the outside world. The similarities are quite uncanny in my opinion, but that’s where they end. Olivia Wilde’s film ends with Alice seemingly escaping the false utopia prison, although viewers were left with many questions. Laufey, on the other hand, returns to her mid-century modern house and to her narcissistic partner, accepting that she cannot help but give in to the chaotic relationship.

Overall, I thought the video and narrative were so well done, and I thoroughly enjoyed the cameos. I sure hope more artists take a page out of Laufey’s book!

Audiences have been patiently waiting for Olivia Wilde’s next directing project, following the release of her 2022 film Don’t Worry Darling and the BTS drama that ensued. Now, that wait is getting closer to being over as Wilde just celebrated after wrapping her third directorial credit, The Invite, meaning I'm starting to hope that the film winds up on the 2025 movie schedule or the 2026 lineup.

Similar to Don’t Worry Darling, Wilde acts in and directs The Invite, starring alongside an A-List cast that includes Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton. Like her directorial debut Booksmart, this Don’t Worry Darling follow-up is a comedy, following two neighboring couples on a double date who unearth “repressed emotions and unexplored sexuality,” according to the synopsis.

With a black and white film photo of the director reviewing footage on set, posted to Wilde’s Instagram, the House actress announced they had wrapped production with the following caption:

I’m sure there will be more information about the experience released in the near future, as well as a trailer. It's also impressive that they shot the film in 23 days, on film and in chronological order!

It sounds like filming went a lot smoother on this project than her sophomore directorial debut, starring Harry Styles and Florence Pugh. Rumors about an on-set romance between the British singer and Wilde had attached themselves to the production and ended up being true.

Also, the Thunderbolts* actress was reportedly not happy with Wilde’s lack of presence on set, leading to an alleged feud between the two actresses. Styles and the Tron: Legacy actress dated for nearly two years following the production, before a tough breakup in 2022. However, the “As It Was” artist only sang praises about his ex-girlfriend’s directing talent.

Even with all the drama, Don’t Worry Darling had a successful theatrical release.

The Invite was seemingly filmed quickly without any major problematic cast relationships, if Wilde’s caption is any indication. This doesn’t really come as a shock, considering Seth Rogen and Wilde have a close professional relationship.

The Drinking Buddies actress recently appeared in an episode of Rogen’s wildly popular new comedy The Studio, which is available to stream with an Apple TV+ subscription. Wilde was one of a number of real-life directors Rogen recruited to play themselves in this hilarious “self-loathing love letter” to Hollywood.

The two co-stars were recently spotted on San Francisco public transportation during rush hour, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, filming final scenes of the upcoming comedy. I personally love it when productions use real environments instead of a studio lot, and I look forward to seeing the final result.

According to Variety, The Invite is supported by FilmNation, the production company also attached to 2025 Best Picture Oscar Winner Anora, and Best Picture nominee Conclave. Needless to say, this already has some solid standing between the cast and crew behind the project.

As someone who enjoyed both Booksmart and Don’t Worry Darling, I have high expectations for Wilde’s third directorial pursuit, and I can't wait to see it.

It'll be her first big film project since all that Don't Worry Darling drama dominated headlines last year, but hopefully, Olivia Wilde's next directorial gig will feature far less drama. The actress-director was last seen onscreen as Ina Conrad in the 2022 period drama Babylon and her next project will reportedly reunite her with that film's leading lady, Margot Robbie, as they begin work on a Christmas comedy.

However, if you're looking forward to seeing the Barbie star—who recently opened up about the challenges of playing the fashion doll—onscreen in an Olivia Wilde-directed movie, we're sorry to disappoint. Robbie's participation in the Christmas comedy, which Deadline reports will be titled Naughty, will be of the producer sort, with the holiday flick backed by the actor's production company, LuckyChap Entertainment.

According to the outlet, Naughty will have a "Bridesmaids in the North Pole" vibe with a screenplay penned by Cocaine Bear's screenwriter Jimmy Warden. The funny-sounding film will allegedly follow a single mom, Mallory, who must track down Santa Claus himself to testify in her divorce hearing in order to gain custody of her son from her ex. 

LuckyChap has had quite the year: the production company, which Robbie founded in 2014 alongside her husband Tom Ackerley as well as Josey McNamara and Sophia Kerr, is behind this year's billion-dollar blockbuster Barbie. The star producer shrewdly traded her upfront salary for a chance at a bigger piece of the box-office gross, reportedly earning up to $50 million for the Mattel-themed movie. 

The company has also produced films including I, Tonya, Birds of Prey, Promising Young Woman and, most recently, Emerald Fennell’s scandalous drama Saltburn, as well as television series, like Hulu's Dollface. 

As for Wilde, Naughty will be the filmmaker's third feature film, after 2022's Don't Worry Darling and the 2019 high-school comedy, Booksmart. 

Despite middling critical reviews for DWD and all of that supposed beef between the Don't Worry Darling cast — Wilde famously dated that film's lead actor Harry Styles, and she was involved in a rumored feud with Styles' co-star Florence Pugh — the aforementioned period drama was a commercial success for the director, bringing in $87 million on a budget of $35 million. 

Booksmart was also well-received, earning $25 million against a $6 million budget and nabbing star Beanie Feldstein a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. 

While being honored as one of Elle‘s Women in Hollywood at the magazine's 2022 ceremony, Olivia commented on the backlash she experienced while directing Don't Worry Darling and proclaimed that, despite it all, directing was "undeniably the greatest job on the planet." Per The Hollywood Reporter, she said:

A couple of years ago, one of the biggest stories in Hollywood surrounded the production of the movie Don’t Worry Darling. Reports indicated that while director Oliva Wilde and star Harry Styles found love on the set, for others, including co-star Florence Pugh, things were far less rosy. Pugh and Wilde reportedly did not get along on set, but while it appeared that all that was behind everybody involved, now the movie is back in the news.

One of the rumors that had been floating around during the movie’s apparently troubled production was that the newly together Oliva Wilde and Harry Styles would disappear from the set from time to time. It was said that during some of these periods, Florence Pugh herself actually directed scenes in the movie. Now an unnamed producer is claiming to World of Reel that Pugh didn’t really direct parts of the film. However, he is saying instead that it was the film’s Director of Photography, Matthew Libatique that took over. The source claimed…

It was in early 2021 that rumors started to fly that, while on the set of the movie that she was directing and he was appearing in, Olivia Wilde had started a relationship with Harry Styles. Even if we take this rumor as truth, it’s unclear just how often this happened. The source does say it was multiple days, but it’s hard to tell if we’re talking about a couple of days or if this was a regular occurrence throughout the entire production. 

One wonders if this most recent claim will set off a new set of rumors surrounding the film. Perhaps, with Don't Worry Darling significantly in the rearview mirror, people will be more willing to talk and we'll get a clear picture of just what in the world was going on. 

Harry Styles got his start with an awkward X Factor audition, but it helped skyrocket him into superstardom with One Direction and, later, a solo career. While the singer is one of the biggest acts in the world, he is still like any other person. His mother proved this notion as she opened up about what her son is really like, and it’s pretty relatable. 

In an interview with Daily Mail, Anne Twist, Styles' mom who is affectionately known as “Mama Twist,” got candid about her son and the person he’s become while in the limelight. She noted that even though he’s a big singer and actor now, not much has changed. In fact, Harry Styles is still one to raid to the fridge when he comes home, whit his mom saying he will "open the fridge" immediately when he gets home out of habit. While Styles is still the same boy to his mom, over the last year he has really risen to a new level of fame. Not only did he release his album Harry's House, he also starred in Olivia Wilde's movie Don't Worry Darling as well as Amazon Prime's My Policeman, which are available with and HBO Max subscription and Amazon Prime subscription, respectively. Even though the success is nice, the singer has also gotten stuck in some drama because of it. 

He was talked about a lot over the last few months because of the alleged drama surrounding Don't Worry Darling, his breakup with Olivia Wilde and there was quite a bit of debate surrounding him winning Album of the Year at the Grammys over Beyoncé. However, his album continues to be a great success, and his fans absolutely adore him and jamming out with him during Love on Tour.

Harry Styles has been through quite a lot in the last several years, and it’s nice to know that he is still a pretty down to Earth kid with a good head on his shoulders. The "As It Was" singer seems to be fun, loving, and respectful, and he's become a beloved pop star and actor. It would be surprising if he ever changed, but I can’t see that ever happening, especially given how humble he truly is. Plus, if he’s still immediately opening a fridge when he gets home, I think he’ll do just fine, especially with a mom like Anne Twist.

D&D fans may be rushing to the theaters to see the new movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, but there is also likely a large group of people flocking to the medieval heist movie simply to admire the internet's boyfriends Chris Pine and Regé-Jean Page as well. The internet just can’t get enough of them, and it turns out, these two co-stars know it, and love it. So as fans go to admire the two beautiful men in the action-packed movie, Pine and Page are relishing the fact that they've been declared the “internet’s boyfriend,” and even troll each other over it.

Audiences are bound to go gaga over Chris Pine and Regé-Jean Page in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves as they give smoldering looks to the camera and face off against humongous monsters. So, while promoting the movie, The Princess Diaries 2 star jokingly told People that he and his Dungeons & Dragons co-star are very much aware of their role as the “internet’s boyfriend.”

I can only imagine Chris Pine and Regé-Jean Page laughing their heads off at all the creative ways the internet has expressed their undying love for them. Ever since Pine’s film debut in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, he’s had plenty of fans posting about his handsome looks and even tweeting about his penis after going “full Monty” in Outlaw King. Shameless these fans are, aren’t they? 

Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page is also not one to be oblivious to the internet fawning over him. He shared with People that the internet is “well-wooed.”

I’m sure the internet is appreciative of these hypothetical flowers as they continue to have hearts in their eyes and dazed smiles on their faces. 

Regé-Jean Page became Bridgerton’s breakout star when the regency-era Netflix series debuted. Unfortunately, this actor and his exceedingly good looks would not appear on the show again as it was revealed he would not be returning as Simon Basset and stuck to his guns on his decision to leave the series knowing his character’s arc was only meant to last a season. On the other hand, the odds of the 34-year-old actor becoming the next James Bond have become very high due to him being such a fan favorite in the Shonda Rhimes series. But, with this English actor’s film career taking off, he’s said being the next 007 is the farthest thing from his mind right now.

Along with audiences starring at the two actors with heart eyes, Pine and Page also have massive respect for each other. They complimented each other's work ethic, and good looks. However, they also had to do a bit of trolling at the same time, with Pine telling his co-star that "what is infuriating is he's also very funny." So, while the love and appreciation is real, it's always fun when a healthy dose of good-natured shade is thrown into the mix.

Being the “internet’s boyfriend” is a role that Dungeons and Dragon’s Chris Pine and Regé-Jean Page don’t plan on turning down anytime soon, and they seem to have a blast soaking up all the online love. Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis’ high profile split has made headlines in recent months as the couple has worked on custody arrangements – and in one notable moment the Don’t Worry Darling director was served onstage at CinemaCon. The two have been in court in recent weeks, and as part of a declaration filed in Los Angeles, Wilde shared her own net worth. 

The actress and director was sharing the state of her finances as part of a larger argument over money and why her ex is purportedly pushing her into debt. According to the paperwork, the actress makes a whopping $71K a month, but she is allegedly spending closer to $107k each month. This includes a slew of items not limited to: 

• $58,000 a month for her mortgage
• $4,000 a month for laundry and cleaning services
• $6,500 for basic utilities

The expenses were obtained by the Daily Mail and also include a declaration of the actress’ total assets. She revealed in her filing that she does have a slew invested in the stock market, with $3,902,689 in assets in that market. She also noted she has $6,021,860 invested in the real estate market. She keeps an additional $645,187 in bank accounts, according to the paperwork. That's more than $10 million.

Celebrity net worth articles are rampant on the internet, and some of these are far more accurate than others. In the case of Wilde’s finances, the information, which was filed last Thursday, seems accurate, though it was allegedly not supposed to be revealed. Her rep slammed the release of the paperwork in a statement (via E!).

The move is part of a larger back and forth the former couple have been having in the court system as they debate custody over their two children, Otis and Daisy. The two had been ensconced in a battle over where they should talk out the custody issue, with Wilde preferring LA and Sudeikis preferring New York, with Wilde landing a victory in the custody battle earlier this month. 

The Tron star has said the kids are already living in California and shouldn’t be asked to move to the East Coast. Olivia Wilde has additionally claimed Jason Sudeikis is acting in “bad faith.” While he can afford to keep these legal proceedings going in perpetuity, her financial declaration was written to indicate she cannot. Her legal team also noted:

One could argue that Don’t Worry Darling's alleged on-set feuds received more attention than Olivia Wilde's tepidly-reviewed movie itself. There were plenty of rumors surrounding the production, some of which involved Wilde's relationship with co-star Harry Styles. However, a lot of emphasis was put on the supposed bad blood between the director and her leading lady, Florence Pugh. Months after the drama, both Pugh and Wilde just happened to be at the same party, but did they actually interact?

Did Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh Interact at the Pre-Oscars Party?

Few things are more awkward than attending a party, where someone you apparently have a "complex" relationship with is also present. According to Page Six, Don’t Worry Darling alums Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh made appearances at the Creative Artists Agency’s star-studded pre-Oscars party at the Sunset Tower Hotel in Los Angeles on Friday. However, according to a source, the former co-stars were not featured in any photos together and weren't spotted schmoozing or having fun in the same orbit. The insiders specifically said that they "definitely did not see them interact."

Rumors of a possible feud between the two started after Olivia Wilde claimed that she fired former leading man, Shia LaBeouf, who later denied her statements. Leaked video of Wilde later showed her trying to ask Labeouf back and mentioning that it would be a "wake-up call for Miss Flo." (Florence Pugh and LaBeouf allegedly didn't get along while prepping for the flick.)

Feud assumptions only heated up after it was alleged that the Midsommar actress was displeased with her director's romance with Harry Styles, which was purportedly affecting production. The internet continued to speculate when the two collaborators released conflicting comments over Don’t Worry Darling’s sex scenes. The Booksmart director wanted audiences to be fixated on the “female hunger” during the intimacy scenes, while the Black Widow actress responded to people’s obsessions over those sequences, saying that the film is “bigger and better than that.” 

Pugh also participated in limited press for Don’t Worry Darling and, at the time, it was said that this was due to her production schedule for Dune 2. But the Oscar-nominated actress still showed up at the Venice Film Festival premiere. Around that time, it was also alleged that the two got into a “screaming match” during filming after the Little Women star grew frustrated over Wilde and Styles' purported on-set disappearances. When Wilde broke her silence on any feud rumors, she said she had “nothing but respect” for the British star. Despite that though, it sounds like she still wasn't keen to chat with her at the recent party.

Olivia Wilde Did Rub Shoulders With A Few Other Stars That Night

So there may not have been any apparent interaction between the Don’t Worry Darling co-workers, but Olivia Wilde did have some friendly interactions with other stars at this shindig. On her Instagram, she posted a photo of herself with The Last of Us’ Pedro Pascal. In her caption, the actress also hilariously explained that her unusually tall stature is due to her wearing massive heels:

Styles snapped it, and posted it to his Instagram stories, however, I think it was intended for his close friends' story, not his public one. Fans of the musician quickly screenshotted the moment, even though it was only up for seconds, and it flew around the internet at a rapid pace. Considering the singer has a carefully curated Instagram account that’s mostly just concert photos, seeing this selfie was a shock to the system. Not only was it not on-brand for the singer, but fans are also dying for a One Direction reunion, and seeing Styles rock a T-shirt from the good ol’ days will no doubt spark even stronger rumors that they could get back together. 

With Harry Styles on a world tour, and his old bandmate Niall Horan not only getting ready to release new music but showing up on the 2023 TV schedule as one of the new coaches on The Voice, there has been a lot of opportunity to ask the boys about the future of One Direction. However, while the crew always speak highly of each other when asked, they are very tight-lipped when it comes to a reunion. This decision to not talk about the future of 1D is likely a major reason Styles decided to delete the photo so quickly as well.

The Venice Film Festival felt like the epic climax in the story that was the Don’t Worry Darling press tour. From Florence Pugh not attending to the press conference, to the constant rumors surrounding Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles’ relationship, to spitgate, there was no shortage of things to worry about. I'd assume that the cast of Don’t Worry Darling was not into all the buzz about the alleged drama, however, the internet was, especially when it came to spitgate. 

While it’s been confirmed that Harry Styles did not spit on Chris Pine, the Dungeons and Dragons star did explain why the internet thought the popstar spat on him to Esquire: 

This joke that Pine is referring to goes back to the aforementioned press conference that Florence Pugh skipped. While there was no drama at that event, there were a fair number of memes to emerge from it, like Pine zoning out and starring off into nothingness, and Harry Styles saying (via Newsweek):

Now, we’re months removed from all this Don’t Worry Darling drama, and Pine’s responses have shown that he hasn’t taken it all too seriously, and has not seemed to worry about it much, darling.

In Pine’s case, the silly memes and rumors have seemed to follow him as he promotes his movie on the 2023 movie schedule Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which hits theaters on March 31. While the insider didn’t speak much about how the “As It Was” singer was doing, Styles was spotted with his old flame, Ellis Calcutt, two months after his split with the Booksmart director. The sighting of the musician with his former partner seemingly creates a bit of a pattern of behavior because the pair reportedly dated shortly after his breakup with Taylor Swift back in 2013.

Wilde sounds like she is focused on and committed to her children and career, and things are all good post-breakup. This can be seen by the two projects the director has in development: a biopic of Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug starring Thomasin McKenzie titled Perfect, and very secretive upcoming superhero movies with both Marvel and Sony. 

Florence Pugh has proven to be one of the queens of fashion, in my opinion, and last year she made fluorescent pink her color, and a full-fledged moment, along with some other notable fashionistas. Now, the actress seems to be substituting the pink for red this year, as she’s rocked multiple bold red hot looks on red carpets this awards season. 

For the last two major film award shows in London, Pugh has shown up in style, and in some unique and bold outfits. While the Don’t Worry Darling star went viral for her braless bright pink sheer Valentino gown, and then stunned again in another fabulous florescent pink dress, the repeated color this year is red, so let’s break her red hot looks down. 

The Academy Award-nominated actress rocked a vibrant red-orange gown to the EE British Academy Film Awards, and it featured magnificent ruffles all around her. This gown harkens back to Pugh’s love for sheer looks, as the bodice is semi-sheer, while both the top and the bottom of the gown feature big oversized ruffles. According to Harpers Bazaar, the gown is by Nina Ricci, and the actress complimented her look with Tiffany & Co. jewelry as well as a hair-do that matched the ruffles of her dress. 

While the simple jewelry goes perfectly with the dress, I think the actress’s hairstyle is what truly brings the whole look together. The ruffled bun, along with the baby bang is such a unique look, and it goes so well with her unconventional and gorgeous dress. 

The bold fashion moves don’t stop there though, because a few weeks ago, the actress attended another high-profile event in another bright red, bold, and ultra-unique gown. 

What a look right? I’m loving Pugh’s affinity for unexpected headwear and hairdos – she can really pull off anything from cowgirl hats to fuzzy bucket hats. I hope it continues into the awards season. Along with this bright red, veiled cowgirl hat, the actress donned a bright red Robert Wun gown to the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards, according to E! News, and it was jaw-dropping. 

Looking closer at the look, the dress features a corset bodice and a pleated peplum. Complimenting the fire engine red dress and hat, Pugh went with gold jewelry, natural glam and, obviously, red nails.

Considering Pugh ended 2022 in a gorgeous crimson gown, and has rocked the red numerous times this season, I'm guessing we’re bound to see her in this color more and more as the year goes on. 

Hopefully, we’ll get to see her on another red carpet soon, considering one of her movies is among the 2023 Oscar nominees, as she voiced a character in the Best Animated Feature nominee Puss and Boots: The Last Wish. Also, with all her upcoming projects on the 2023 movie schedule, it seems highly likely she’ll show up on multiple red carpets throughout the year. And I have no doubt her gowns will be gorgeous, and probably red. 

Many fans were sad to hear Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles broke up after two years together. But Wilde didn’t wallow in her sadness for long as she’s been living the single life since the split was announced late last year. She even made post-break-up headlines with a possible see-through revenge dress. However, while things appear to be going well, Wilde left fans wondering about her post-breakup life as she posted a cryptic Instagram Story referencing it.

Wilde appeared to be having a moment as she posted an image from the 2004 romantic drama Tropical Malady. If her post is anything to go by, the Booksmart director claimed she’s never truly been in love before. This could put her past relationships in a distinct perspective, especially given the reported issues with Sudeikis pre-dating her relationship with Styles.

Things appeared to be looking up for Wilde as she spent the holiday surrounded by family and friends while taking in the sights at Disneyland. The actress-director was reportedly focusing on her kids following her split from Styles. However, she appeared to go through a down moment like anyone else going through a breakup. A source claimed the break-up occurred because of the former couple living on different continents with Wilde co-parenting in the U.S. and Styles calling the U.K. home.

Outside of her children, Wilde has kept busy with her career following the drama surrounding Don’t Worry Darling. The psychological thriller (Wilde’s second time behind the lens) was marred in controversy and alleged feuds while receiving tepid reviews from critics. She appeared to bounce back with the Hollywood period drama Babylon alongside Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. The film directed by Damien Chazelle divided critics who praised the cast while pointing out issues with its script. We’re breaking down 12 iconic moments from the past year that we won’t be forgetting any time soon. 

The Oscars Slap

Starting us off was the slap heard ‘round the world—a.k.a. The Oscars Slap. 

Following a joke from host Chris Rock that poked fun at Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia, her husband (and the evening’s winner for Best Actor in a Leading Role), Will Smith, marched on stage and slapped Rock across the face.

Collectively, I don’t know if the world has ever been more unified in a moment of “is this a bit or not?” immediately followed by, “Oh shit, it’s not.”

Much of the resulting exchange between Rock and Smith was censored out of live broadcasts, but the unedited footage had already been immortalized online. This story captured the real news cycle for days, but it also gave birth to some of the best memes from 2022.

The Don’t Worry Darling Drama

The drama behind the scenes of Don't Worry Darling was a huge point of celebrity gossip in 2022, thanks to director Olivia Wilde’s romance with leading man, Harry Styles. Their relationship was always the subject of scrutiny, since public favor tended to side with Wilde’s ex, Jason Sudeikis.

The drama took a hard left turn when Wilde shared that she felt forced to fire Shia LaBeouf, who had been the original star of her film. LaBeouf came back with receipts: a video from Wilde to himself, practically begging him to continue filming and speaking kind of unfavorably about costar Florence Pugh. A newly-single Kim Kardashian first met Pete Davidson while hosting an October 2021 episode of Saturday Night Live. The two shared their first kiss during a sketch as Jasmine and Aladdin—and much to everyone’s surprise, were photographed spending time together off set soon after.

Kardashian and Davidson attended the Met Gala Together, and he was even featured on episodes of The Kardashians on Hulu. They’ve since broken up, but their relationship was iconic mostly because everyone loved seeing the SKIMS founder smiling and having fun during a messy divorce.

Eras Tour Broke Ticketmaster

The Eras tour fiasco wasn’t the first time Ms. Taylor Alison Swift came under fire this year—this past summer, we learned that her private-jet use essentially makes her an eco-terrorist. But, more drama found the singer/songwriter after the release of her most recent studio album, Midnights.

The album was a hit with fans, who hadn’t been able to see Swift live in concert since her Reputation tour in 2018—that’s four new albums and two re-records ago. So when Swift announced Eras, a tour that would serve as a celebration of her entire discography, it’s safe to say public interest was high.

Swifties flocked to Ticketmaster to claim presale tickets—but the site was forced to announce later in the day that traffic to the site had essentially “broken” their Verified Fan system and there were no tickets left for the general public sale (other than the ones resellers are currently asking thousands and thousands of dollars for).

The event literally caused Congress to launch an antitrust investigation on Ticketmaster’s parent company, Live Nation, making the Eras tour presale a tragic but iconic 2022 moment.

Amber Heard & Johnny Depp’s Lawsuit

A courtroom in Virginia became the focal point of the entire country during the lawsuit and countersuit between Johnny Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard.

So many juicy details came out of this trial, but the real spectacle was some of the unusual lines of questioning used by Heard’s lawyers during the trial (the Amicream line of questioning was wild).

Everyone and their mom became a legal expert during this trial, but it was another weirdly unifying moment of “schadenfreude” that brought us all together.

Rihanna’s Baby Bump

I think the world collectively held our breath when Rihanna announced her pregnancy with A$AP Rocky—if anyone is going to absolutely rock maternity, it’s Rhi. 

As expected, Rihanna showed off her baby bump proudly in 2022 until her son was born in June. Rather than disguise her tummy, the singer and beauty mogul basically treated her bump as the world’s best accessory.

Rihanna’s pregnant energy completely matched a quote from Alexa Demie’s character in Euphoria: “I wouldn't wear any of those nasty maternity clothes. I would just be me, plus pregnant.”

J-Lo And Ben Affleck Got Married

Capping off a decades-long saga with a happy ending, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck rekindled their relationship and tied the knot in 2022.

This A-list marriage is a perfect dose of nostalgia for people who were fans of the couple when they first dated in 2003—plus I think everyone just likes to see two people finding their way back together.

Kim Wore Marilyn Monroe’s Dress To The Met Gala

Come on, of course Kimmy was responsible for two of the most iconic moments of 2022!

The Kardashians star made her aforementioned appearance with Pete Davidson at the 2022 Met Gala wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress—not a copy of her dress, but the actual piece Monroe herself wore to JFK’s birthday party in 1962.

The look sparked controversy, with some saying the dress is a piece of history that should be preserved and others still calling out the crash diet she had to go through to fit into the garment. 

Love the idea or hate it, you have to admit: We’re still talking about it. And isn’t that the whole point anyway?

Lea Michele’s Return To Broadway

If you weren’t online for the Funny Girl drama, strap in. Beanie Feldstein was cast as Fanny Brice in 2021 for the revival of the Broadway show—but after the production was snubbed at the Tony Awards, Feldstein announced in June that her final show would be on September 25.

However, Feldstein later took to Instagram to share that she wouldn’t actually be staying until September: she was leaving the show earlier than expected, and her last show would be at the end of July. Almost immediately following her announcement, the production came forward to announce that Lea Michele would be taking over the role of Fanny Brice.

Michele came under fire a little bit when people started to suggest she had “Rachel Berry-ed” her way into the part—after all, she previously worked with Funny Girl’s director on Spring Awakening, and shared in an interview that she and the director had discussed Feldstein’s role in the show over drinks. We obviously don’t know what was said behind the scenes, but the whole thing felt like an IRL replay of Michele’s Broadway-hungry character on Glee.

Completely dominating everyone’s FYP this December was Jenna Ortega’s dance routine in Tim Burton’s Wednesday. The show has been a huge hit (especially with YA viewers), and it’s clear that Ortega’s charming-but-creepy portrayal of Wednesday Addams is the secret to Wednesday’s popularity.

Elon Musk Bought Twitter

In one of the more cringe-worthy moments of 2022, billionaire Elon Musk made the decision to buy Twitter. Then unmade the decision. Then made it again. Seriously, I got whiplash from all the back and forth.

Ultimately Musk did go through with buying Twitter and immediately went to work making “improvements” to the site. For example, there was a period of several lawless days where any Twitter user could pay to be verified, leading to a frenzy of users impersonating celebrities, corporations, and Musk himself.

All in all, Musk’s net worth fell by $9 billion—yes, that’s BILLION—as a result of his quest to “make Twitter funny again.” And honestly? That is pretty funny to me.

The dress was a look Pugh had worn earlier this month for the 2022 Fashion Awards. The gown is Valentino and her jewelry is from Tiffany & Co. But the red carpet images taken from the London-set event don’t really do justice to the look in the same way these photographs do. 

Of course, the post has already sparked a slew of responses from other celebs – even some in the fashion world. Designer Harris Reed said Pugh is an “absolute goddess.” Singer-Songwriter Cary Brothers called it an “insane shot.” WWE star Zelina Vega was closest to my own reaction, writing, “Wow, just wow.”  Italian fashion designer Pier Paolo Piccioli, the creative director of Valentino (the brand which is also responsible for the aforementioned sheer dress), also reached out to the actress on the post, sweetly wishing her a “Merry Christmas.”

Meanwhile, after debuting a new ‘do and also rocking some big fashion looks this year, Zendaya was recently declared to be having the biggest fashion moment in 2022 (among other names like Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande). I have no idea why Florence Pugh did not even make the Top 20 here. She had the viral fashion moment in Rome, she’s rocked Barbicore to an excellent degree (and was ahead of the curve compared to many celebrities with it) and her Don’t Worry Darling fashion looks from press days were total wins. Pugh even got away with wearing a cape at one point! Lots of people try capes. Few do it successfully.

Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian made the best-dressed list after only recently getting roasted for an outfit she wore to a holiday party. Not knocking on Kim, I’m just saying our girl Florence got robbed. At least with her latest look, she’s going out with a bang as we head into 2023. 

When Don’t Worry Darling premiered at the Venice Film Festival all the attention was on the cast and the highly publicized alleged feud between Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh. Lots happened, or allegedly happened, like spit-gate (which Chis Pine denied, and Harry Styles addressed at a concert), and Florence Pugh missing the press conference, among other things. One wholesomely hilarious thing that really did happen was Harry Styles kissing Nick Kroll after the screening, and now Kroll is opening up about that experience, and how he’d like this story to replace one iconic fairytale. 

In an article for EW paying tribute to Harry Styles, who has had a massive year, Kroll wrote about the singer-actor and his successes. The Big Mouth co-creator praised his Don’t Worry Darling co-star’s ability to handle all the attention he gets with “class and grace,” and his knack for performing. He also cheekily talked bout a kiss the two shared at the Venice Film Festival, writing: 

Admittedly it would be quite hilarious if Kroll could somehow change the Princess and the Frog story to be about him and Harry Styles at the Venice Film Festival. I could totally see it! Styles as the princess, Kroll as the frog, who will turn into a beautiful prince, it would be amazing. Based on the kiss at the festival, clearly, the two have the chemistry to pull this off, as you can see for yourself here: 

The comedian also noted that because of this kiss, he’s become “much cooler” with his nieces and nephews. Along with becoming cooler among younger folk, I also don’t think it’s a stretch to say Kroll got to live out the dreams of many as he made out with one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. 

Kroll also gushed over how Styles “doesn't take himself, or any of it too seriously,” and it was a pleasure working with him.

As for the overall attention surrounding the film, the Human Resources co-creator explained that he first became aware of the Don’t Worry Darling drama in Venice, and he has had a good sense of humor about the drama since, cracking jokes about spit-gate among other points of drama. 

So, while there is lots of talk about Harry Styles' love life, between him and Oliva Wilde calling it off and the rumors he’s hanging out with Kendall Jenner. One thing we know for sure is he shared quite the kiss with Nick Kroll at the Venice Film Festival, and both he and the public loved it.

After almost two years together, it appears that Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde have decided to call it quits for the time being, and take a break from their relationship. The duo who met on the set of Don’t Worry Darling, and were subjects of the highly publicized alleged drama surrounding the film, have apparently decided to go their separate ways. 

In regard to the break-up, a source told People:

This news comes right as Styles is ending his residency in Los Angeles as part of his world tour for his album Harry's House. He is also about to begin the next leg of his tour in Mexico, and then Australia. Meaning he will not be in one consistent place for the foreseeable future. 

Following the turbulent lead-up to the release of Don’t Worry Darling, which Wilde directed and Styles starred in, there were questions about how the two were holding up. Though they quickly put the kibosh on those rumors, and piled on the PDA in NYC not too long ago. Since the film's release, Wilde has also been seen a few times at Styles' concerts. However, it seems like things might be over for real this time.

Following the alleged break-up, the source also said the two are still “very close friends,” and another friend of the couple added: 

This does seem like an extremely logical reason to take a break, or even break it off. Styles is currently touring the globe with his insanely popular album, and he has had two movies on the 2022 film schedule, Don’t Worry Darling and My Policeman. In short, he's a busy, busy guy. Meanwhile, Wilde has two young kids, 6-year-old Daisy, and 8-year-old Otis, who she co-parents with her ex Jason Sudeikis. The two seem to be in two different places in life with differing priorities, and maintaining a long-distance relationship would be incredibly difficult, especially given how busy both of them are. 

This news comes on the heels of not only the intense attention on the Don’t Worry Darling drama, but also after a lot of attention was drawn to the relationship between Wilde and Sudeikis. While the two’s issues reportedly predated Styles, the Booksmart director and Ted Lasso star’s nanny has come out saying there was allegedly overlap between Wilde being with Sudeikis and Styles. 

The nanny also claimed that Sudeikis went through Wilde’s phone and found out she had kissed Styles while the two were together. However, the actress has said the rumors about her leaving the SNL alum for her Don’t Worry Darling co-star are “complete horseshit.” 

The sources in the story from People claiming Styles and Wilde are now on a break said the intense attention surrounding them has been difficult. They also said the relationship has gone through many “ups and downs.” 

If this is indeed the end of Wilde and Styles, I hope the reports are true that it was an amicable breakup, and that the two are still on good terms. The last thing either the of them (and the public, honestly) need is another thing to worry about, darling. 

Sometimes after watching a movie, I will go to Rotten Tomatoes and check to see if the film is certified fresh or rotten in the eyes of critics. Though my own opinions mostly line up with those of the reviewers the website views as experts, there are times where they couldn’t be more opposite. This happened with the Summer 2022 release of The Gray Man, a movie I actually liked, but critics, for the most part, did not. I wasn’t alone in this, as there was nearly a 50-point difference in the critical and audience scores.

This has also been the case for a large number of 2022 movies released so far, including Black Adam, which had a 51-point gap between critics and audiences. But Dwayne Johnson’s massive superhero movie isn’t alone in this regard, as some other big releases feel like critics and audiences were watching two entirely different movies.Let’s get into these differences now…

Black Adam - 39% Critic Score; 90% Audience Score

The long-awaited Black Adam was released in October 2022, and became an immediate hit with audiences despite receiving mixed to negative reviews from critics. Regardless of the poor critical response, Dwayne Johnson’s first superhero movie soared to number one at the box office the weekend of its release, with a weekend domestic gross of $67 million. 

Over on the Black Adam Rotten Tomatoes page, the movie, which saw the spectacular return of one of DC’s biggest heroes in the end-credits sequence, currently has a 39% critic score with an audience score of 90%. The site’s critical consensus essentially states that Black Adam points the way to “an exciting future for DC films” but is also “a wildly uneven letdown.”

Don’t Worry Darling - 38% Critic Score; 74% Audience Score

After what seems like years of behind-the-scenes rumors and all sorts of drama leading up to its release, Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling opened in September 2022, and gave audiences a thrilling yet muddled psychological thriller. Upon release, the film received tepid reviews, though Florence Pugh’s lead performance did receive a great deal of praise.

The movie’s Rotten Tomatoes page currently lists the critic score as 38% while the audience score is 74%. The general consensus from the audience is that the cast more than makes up for the Don’t Worry Darling ending, which isn’t for everyone.

Amsterdam - 33% Critic Score; 62% Audience Score

David O. Russell’s star-studded mystery-comedy about three friends navigating post-WWI Europe was another film that didn’t do too hot with critics or at the box office, despite featuring performances by the likes of Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington.

As it stands on Rotten Tomatoes, Amsterdam has a critic score of 33% and an audience score of 62%, but there is some commonality in each group’s response to the movie. The general critics consensus is that the movie is busy, both in terms of the number of A-listers in the cast and the plot. Even the audiences agreed with critics when it came to the movie’s hard-to-follow story that requires a lot from the viewer.

The School For Good And Evil - 36% Critic Score; 68% Audience Score

The 2022 Netflix movie, The School for Good and Evil received largely negative reviews when it was released in October, with some critics calling it an “aggressively convoluted YA movie” with others saying that it was funny in parts despite being neither clever nor original.

The School for Good and Evil, which features a remarkable cast, currently has a decent size gulf between the critic and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie has a 36% critical response with an audience score of 68%, which isn’t the best or worst but still flunks in terms of storytelling, according to the critical consensus.

Ticket To Paradise - 56% Critic Score; 88% Audience Score

In October 2022, Julia Roberts and George Clooney got back together once again for the romantic comedy, Ticket to Paradise. Upon its release, the film received mixed to good reviews, with critics pointing out the performances by the two leads and the happy nature of its story. 

Ticket to Paradise is only a few percentage points shy of reaching the “Fresh” ranking on Rotten Tomatoes with its critics score of 56%, but moviegoers are almost in full support of the movie, and its audience score sits at 88%. Critics and audiences alike pointed out the pairing of Roberts and Clooney as a positive for the movie.

Where The Crawdads Sing - 33% Critic Score; 96% Audience Score

The 2022 movie with the biggest difference in critic and audiences scores on Rotten Tomatoes (so far) is Where the Crawdads Sing. Although audiences couldn’t get enough of the 2022 book-to-movie adaptation (96% of moviegoers enjoyed it), the same can’t be said for critics, who largely panned the coming-of-age drama.

According to the Where the Crawdads Sing Rotten Tomatoes page, critics felt the movie failed to properly adapt the 2018 best-selling novel of the same name “into a tonally coherent drama,” though professional reviewers did enjoy Daisy Edgar-Jones' portrayal of Kya Clark. 

Jurassic World Dominion - 30% Critic Score; 77% Audience Score

Although it’s true none of the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World movies have been able to reach the heights of Steven Spielberg’s 1993 summer blockbuster in terms of cultural relevancy and critical consensus, the series reached new lows in the eyes of reviewers with Jurassic World Dominion in June 2022. On the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes page, it is stated that the “franchise has lumbered a long way down” since starting nearly 30 years ago.

Even moviegoers were lukewarm on Jurassic World Dominion, which has an audience score of 77%. However, this is still an improvement over Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which had an audience score of 48% upon release in 2018.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 - 69% Critic Score; 96% Audience Score

In April 2022, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and its lovable titular character voiced by Ben Schwartz, warmed the hearts of audiences of all ages with its humor, action, and surprising amount of emotion. According to its Rotten Tomatoes page, 96% of audiences liked Sonic 2, which is a great deal higher than the critical reaction.

It should be pointed out that the 69% critic score for the second confrontation between Sonic and Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik isn’t the lowest of the year, but there’s still nearly a 30-point difference between general moviegoers and reviewers who called it a “generally acceptable sequel.”

The Gray Man - 46% Critic Score; 91% Audience Score

Joe and Anthony Russo directed some of the best Marvel movies that were equally loved by critics and audiences, but the same can’t be said about their 2022 Netflix movie The Gray Man, which has a gap between the two categories that is about as big as the spy thriller’s massive budget.

According to The Gray Man's Rotten Tomatoes page, only 46% of critics liked the movie while 91% of audiences enjoyed watching Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and the rest of The Gray Man cast. The only movie directed by the Russos to have a higher audience score is Captain America: The Winter Soldier at 92%.

Purple Hearts - 40% Critic Score; 67% Audience Score

The romantic drama, Purple Hearts, has been a hit with audiences ever since taking up residence on the Netflix Top 10 list in August 2022, and it still has a 67% approval rating with fans on Rotten Tomatoes. The same, however, can’t be said about the critical response to the emotionally-wrecking affair.

According to the Purple Hearts Rotten Tomatoes page, the movie has a 38% approval rating with critics in the weeks following its release.

Uncharted - 40% Critic Score; 90% Audience Score

The Tom Holland-led Uncharted seemed like it was never actually going to be released, but it became an instant hit with audiences when it finally did enter theaters in February 2022. Currently, it has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 90%, which is Holland’s third highest non-Marvel movie (Onward and Spies in Disguise barely beat it). 

The critical response is a different story though, and the critic score sits at 41% with the official consensus being that it’s a “disappointing echo of superior adventure films.”

Persuasion - 32% Critic Score; 67% Audience Score

Despite being on the receiving end of backlash over its dialogue, the 2022 adaptation of Persuasion has been a hit with Netflix subscribers since it arrived on the scene. And, that popularity has translated to a 67% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The critical response hasn’t been nearly as favorable, and according to the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes page, only 32% of critics liked the movie, with the consensus being that Persuasion “fails to convince as a worthwhile [Jane] Austen adaptation.”

Death On The Nile - 62% Critic Score; 82% Audience Score

Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile, in which he also appears as legendary detective Hercule Poirot, is another 2022 movie that wasn’t necessarily hated by critics but still one that has a gulf between the critical and audience responses.

According to the movie’s Rotten Tomatoes page, the star-studded murder mystery has a 62% critic score and an 82% audience score, with the latter group declaring it an “all-star mystery” with “plenty of entertaining twists.”

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore - 46% Critic Score; 83% Audience Score

Though an improvement from its predecessor, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore doesn’t come close to some of the better Harry Potter movies, at least in the eyes of critics. Following its release, the Rotten Tomatoes critic score for the third movie in the Wizarding World prequel series had a 46% approval rating.

Audiences were actually quite fond of the third Fantastic Beasts movie, specifically pointing out the special effects that were on full display throughout.

Moonfall - 36% Critic Score; 70% Audience Score

Roland Emmerich’s disaster sci-fi adventure, Moonfall, failed to find a big audience when it was released in February 2022, but the people who did end up seeing it on the big screen liked what they saw from the large ensemble cast. 

The movie currently has a 70% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is nearly double that of critics (36% score). And, despite the poor marks, the critical consensus was it was an “Emmerich disaster thriller through and through.”

With so many movies still slated to come out before 2022 draws to an end, expect to see more titles added to this list in the months to come. And then we’ll have to start paying attention to all those 2023 new releases.

It seems like it was just yesterday we were reading countless behind-the-scenes reports about the making of Don’t Worry Darling, which was followed by round after round of drama from the rollout of the one of the biggest fall 2022 movies. I think it’s safe to say that the Don’t Worry Darling press tour, specifically at the Venice Film Festival, was one of the more talked about situations this fall. As all of this went down, the internet was buzzing, because it added an intense amount of fuel to the fire of rumored drama about Pugh and Olivia Wilde. 

Along with Pugh’s friend, many others dressed up as various people involved with the Venice Film Festival premiere of this movie. For example, were inspired by Chris Pine's blank stares at the press conference, a moment that turned into a viral meme.

The 26-year-old actress has so much on her plate going forward. The Black Widow star was added to the cast of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and plays a key role in Dune: Part Two - two of the most anticipated new movies of 2023. While Alexander Skarsgård has tried his hand at directing for the Swedish-Finnish short film To Kill a Child, The Pack would be Skarsgård’s directorial feature film debut. But you’ll have plenty of opportunities to see The Northman actor in front of the camera, like in the upcoming horror film Infinity Pool with Pearl’s Mia Goth, as well as in the forthcoming biopic Lee with Kate Winslet about World War II photographer Lee Miller. The Pack will begin shooting in March with no release date announced as of yet. The plot of The Pack almost reminds me of Showtime’s Yellowjackets, which follows a group of girls who survived a plane crash, only to be stuck in the wilderness taking on cannibalistic rituals to survive. With wolves being the central theme of this psychological thriller, I can only imagine this film follows a grisly tone with stellar performances.

Despite the fact that we are right in the heart of spooky season, David Gordon Green's Halloween Ends in its second week never stood a chance against Jaume Collet-Serra's Black Adam, and that's exactly what we saw play out over the last three days. The new DC superhero comic book blockbuster starring Dwayne Johnson had one of the biggest debuts of 2022 thus far, and the final battle between Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode and Michael Myers utterly crated – which is surely a result of the film's hybrid release strategy.

Black Adam Is The New #1 Movie... But It Didn't Quite Put Up Marvel-esque Numbers

Like any major studio tentpole, Black Adam is a movie that cost a lot of money to make. Not even counting the project's decade-plus in development, publicity, or marketing, the film had a production budget of $195 million (per Variety) to ensure that the scale of the action made it fit right into the modern field of superhero blockbusters. That, obviously, has a major impact on the way that we view the box office results from the film's first Friday-to-Sunday in theaters.

When viewed in the vacuum of "movies released in 2022," Black Adam's performance this weekend looks good. Early estimates from The Numbers say that the DC Comics adaptation brought in about $67 million from ticket sales in the United States and Canada, and that's enough money to firmly place it in the Top 10 of domestic debuts since January – sandwiched between Jeff Fowler's Sonic The Hedgehog 2 ($72.1 million) and Angus MacLane's Lightyear ($50.6 million). 

As of right now, it seems primed to be called one of the years biggest releases of the year .. but the aforementioned budget for the film adds a layer of context that makes one question how we will look back on the project's theatrical run once we get to the end of the year.

One big positive that Black Adam has working for it is the foreign release of the film. With some exceptions, Dwayne Johnson movies have long had a tendency to perform better overseas than in the United States and Canada, and it presently appears as though the star's latest project will continue that trend. In addition to the aforementioned $67 million made domestically, the film has also brought in an estimated $73 million from abroad, bringing its present global total to $140 million.

But are the box office earnings substantial and potentially stable enough to allow the blockbuster to have long legs that put Black Adam in the same league as the global totals for Taika Waititi's Thor: Love And Thunder ($745.2 million), Matt Reeves' The Batman ($767.6 million), or Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness ($952.2 million)? There's good reason to think that it won't. 

For starters, significant as the star power of Dwayne Johnson may be, Black Adam doesn't have the same established brand cachet, and in addition to getting off to a slower start at the box office, the hype isn't as significant. Critics haven't been particularly kind to the movie – which is presently holding a 40 percent on Rotten Tomatoes – and the CinemaScore "B+" grade doesn't suggest any kind of populist edge over the previous 2022 superhero blockbusters (it matches the two Marvel movies, and The Batman got an "A-").

As far as competition is concerned, Black Adam does have some runway, as there aren't any other major blockbusters set to come out in the next couple weeks... but mid-November is when Ryan Coogler's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to be unleashed to the world . The Hollywood Reporter says that the new Marvel Studios film could make as much as $175 million in its opening weekend, and that kind of launch would quickly move Dwayne Johnson's movie to long-term memory in audience's minds.

Black Adam is basically in a position where it needs to make as much money as possible before November 11, and tracking it across the next couple of weeks will be interesting.

Like Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends Suffers A Massive Second Week Plummet Of About 80 Percent

Even more predictable than what happened with Black Adam this weekend is the end result for Halloween Ends... which I'll describe with the words I used when I foresaw this happening in last weekend's box office column:  it's a nightmare. Thanks to the choice by Universal Pictures to release the trilogy capper in theaters and on Peacock simultaneously, the horror movie's box office numbers have proven to be extremely front-loaded, and the film tanked in its second weekend.

The reason this was so easy to see coming is because almost the exact same thing happened with David Gordon Green's Halloween Kills in October 2021. That movie had a solid start at the box office, making $49.4 million in its first three days, but one week later it was proven that pretty much everyone who wanted to see the film on the big screen saw it within 72 hours. It collapsed in its second weekend, resulting in a shocking 71 percent weekend-to-weekend drop.

Bad as that was, the results for Halloween Ends are far, far worse. Not only did the 2022 release make less than its predecessor when it debuted (earning only about $40 million), but it has suffered an even worse weekend-to-weekend drop of about 80 percent, and it only managed a seven figure total. Because Universal doesn't officially release numbers about Peacock subscriber engagement and traffic, we have no idea how many people watched the slasher sequel online since this past Friday, but we do no that relatively few movie-goers left their house to watch it at their local cineplex.

The silver lining for Halloween Ends is that, unlike Black Adam, it didn't cost a crazy amount of money to produce. USA Today says the reported budget is between $20-30 million, and it has made $82 million globally to date. That being said, it's sad that the film didn't get the opportunity to reach its full box office potential as we get closer and closer to the holiday that it's named after.

Ticket To Paradise Has A Middling Opening As Counter Programming To Blockbusters And Horror

Unlike Black Adam and Halloween Ends, one big release this weekend that didn't come loaded up with expectations was Ol Parker's Ticket To Paradise, and it did... ok. The romantic comedy starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts is late getting a domestic release, as it hit theaters in other markets last month, but that just means that the money it makes in the United States and Canada is icing on the cake. The movie was surprisingly expensive to make – Variety pins the production budget at $60 million – and to date it has made $98.7 million globally.

The conversation surrounding Don't Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde's second directorial outing, has been less focused on the film and more on the rumored drama behind the scenes. The creator of the hilariously weird animated teen comedy Big Mouth, Nick Kroll -- who also starred in Wilde's film -- has spoke out about his "first exposure" to the alleged drama and all the attention around it.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the League actor touched on everything from working with Mel Brooks to his return to stand-up. Yet, the conversation inevitably turned to all the negative buzz surrounding Don't Worry Darling, mainly how the actor was oblivious to it until his time on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival. The actor said a famously contentious reception to the Geico commercial-based sitcom Cavemen (which Kroll starred in) at the Television Critics Association panel helped prepare him for the extreme attention surrounding the alleged Don't Worry Darling drama. He said: 

The actor stressed that much of the controversy surrounding the film had no basis in reality. Kroll said he had a good time with his fellow actors on set, despite making the movie at the height of the COVID pandemic. The actor continued:  

This wouldn't be the first time members of the cast had to refute the rumored drama. Representatives for Chris Pine had to publicly address and dismiss a video taken at the movie's premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Fans thought the clip captured Pine being spit on by his co-star, Harry Styles. The singer, meanwhile, chose to address the video in a more lighthearted way. 

Though some of the cast have laughed off the rumors, others have not. Someone close to the production claimed things got so heated that, at one point, lead actress Florence Pugh and Wilde got into a screaming match on set. However, crew members released a statement after this denying the screaming rumor. After Don't Worry Darling was met with tepid or negative reviews from audiences and critics upon opening, the reports regarding potential feuds only seemed to persist.

Despite all the alleged drama between Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh, Wilde remains proud of the work she and her crew did on the movie. One can only wonder if, in time, the conversation can turn back to the film's merits and the thriller will find its audience.

Don't Worry Darling, one of the biggest titles on the schedule of upcoming movies, can be seen in theaters now, and you can listen to Nick Kroll's return to Big Mouth in the show's sixth season on Oct. 28,  which available to anyone with a Netflix subscription. 

Olivia Wilde has had a long and successful career as an actress, recently establishing herself as a filmmaker over the last few years. Following the success of Booksmart, she got behind the camera for the thriller Don’t Worry Darling, which was a project surrounded by rumors of feuds between herself and actors like Florence Pugh. Wilde recently called directing “the greatest job on the planet” but talks working in the “Hellfire of Misogyny” that is Hollywood.

Prior to its release, the press surrounding Don’t Worry Darling had almost nothing to do with the contents of the movie. Instead they were about Olivia Wilde’s relationship with Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, as well as her ex Jason Sudeikis. The chatter was so much that crew members issued a joint statement in support of her. Wilde recently appeared at Elle's Women in Hollywood event (via THR), where she spoke about becoming a multihyphenate in the industry. As she put it,

Well, there you have it. Social media can be a toxic place, and it seems like she saw the ugly side of outlets like Twitter while working on Booksmart and Don’t Worry Darling. But despite the reality of what it’s like to be a filmmaker in the current age, Olivia Wilde also admits it’s the best job ever. And for that reason, she’s the right person to be behind the camera.

Olivia Wilde’s comments about social media puts the spotlight on a unique challenge to filmmaking that’s only popped up in the last few years. Namely the way that online chatter can affect the promoting and box office performance of projects. Although for Don’t Worry Darling, all the rumors of drama might have helped it get to #1 at the box office upon its release. Later in her appearance, Wilde used more colorful language to describe what it’s like as a female filmmaker in Hollywood, saying:

Given just how much drama surrounded Don’t Worry Darling, one might be able to understand this sentiment. Almost every day brought some new headline leading up to the movie’s release, from stories about Shia LaBeouf’s departure, to Olivia Widle’s rumored feud with Florence Pugh, to Harry Styles and Chris Pine’s #SpitGate. Wilde was even served custody papers by Jason Sudeikis while presenting her new thriller at CinemaCon.

But while being open about the struggles of being a female filmmaker, Olivia Wilde also once again highlighted how lucky she was to have her job. After all, she’s been able to create two wholly original movies, and things are still just beginning. As she put it,

It’s no doubt for this reason that all the misogyny and online backlash doesn’t actually stop Olivia Wilde from being a working actress and director. Ultimately she’s able to create art, and is becoming a powerful force in the entertainment industry as a whole. Although she does have to deal with chatter about her personal life, including her relationship with Harry Styles.

Don’t Worry Darling is still in some theaters, but folks are wondering when it might arrive on streaming, possibly on HBO Max. In the meantime, check out the 2022 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience. 

Olivia Wilde has been an ardent supporter of the “free the nipple” movement on magazine covers and in interviews. However, she really put her money where her mouth is at the 2nd Annual Academy Museum Gala over the weekend in which she wowed in a sheer silver number. The heavily photographed moment came just a few weeks after her Don’t Worry Darling co-star Florence Pugh infamously clapped back at trolls for wearing a similarly sheer Valentino look. 

Arriving at the Gala at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on October 15, Olivia Wilde rocked a sparkly, sheer silver dress that caught the light. The bottom of the dress was lined with a pink feather trim. It was designed by Alexandre Vauthier, who supported the look with a slew of heart emojis on Instagram. The carpet moment came just shortly after Elle dropped a cover of Wilde looking glamorous and seemingly supporting the movement on the cover. Back in 2021, Wilde had also spoken about #freethenipple, noting at the time that she feels part of the issue is the culture that we live in. She said as part of a longer interview with Vogue: 

Meanwhile, she followed in footsteps made by her Don't Worry Darling co-star Florence Pugh (yes, she of the alleged feud). Pugh was previously even more open about her feelings regarding nipples and being able to be comfortable whenever and however she wants, noting after the Valentino show that kicked off more awareness: 

Florence Pugh later shared how "alarming" it was that so many people had hate-filled thoughts about her Valentino outfit. 

It hasn't stopped her though. Ms. Pugh has continued to #freethenipple in more clothing, including a second Valentino number at Paris Fashion Week. Other celebrities have rocked the naked dress and other similarly sheer looks, or have shown off see-through numbers with undergarments, a la Megan Fox at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards. It looks to be one red carpet trend that may have some staying power.

Florence Pugh may be the star and gives a commanding performance to show for it, but the Don’t Worry Darling cast member who stole the show for me was Kate Berlant. As pregnant housewife, Peg, she exudes an incredible charm that serves as the most potent source of levity amid the unnerving thrills and effectively distracts you from all the Don’t Worry Darling drama that has surrounded the film.

The psychological thriller also marks one of the first times the comedian has really been given a chance to shine on the big screen in a role that is more than a quick cameo. However, we felt even those were worth including as we shine the spotlight on Kate Berlant’s wonderful filmography so far and where these movies and TV shows are now available to stream, digitally rent, or purchase. 

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2019)

With only his longtime friend and stunt double (Brad Pitt, in the badass role that won him his first acting Oscar) at his side, the former star of a hit Western TV show (Leonardo DiCaprio) contemplates his uncertain future as a film actor in late 1960s Los Angeles.

After Class (2019)

After unwittingly making a career-threatening mistake, a college writing professor from New York (Justin Long) is given some time off, during which he visits his family as they prepare to say their final goodbyes to his ailing grandmother (Lynn Cohen).

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Kate Berlant: Also in 2019, the actor landed a much larger starring role as Jackie Cohn, the sister of Long’s character, in writer and director Daniel Schechter’s After Class — a film that can both make you laugh and move you to tears.

Sorry To Bother You (2018)

A financially strapped, young, Black man (Academy Award nominee Lakeith Stanfield) gets a job as a telemarketer, where he discovers that the key to working his way up the corporate ladder is by disguising his voice to sound like that of a stereotypical white person (provided by David Cross).

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Kate Berlant: A year before appearing in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and After Class, Kate Berlant starred in another somewhat brief, but absolutely memorable, role as telemarketer Diana DeBauchery (which, she assures, is not pronounced like it is spelled) in Sorry to Bother You — the visually stunning, conceptually unique and topical feature-length debut of writer and director Boots Riley.

I Love You Both (2016)

The Characters (2016)

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Kate Berlant: Years before headlining their own sketch comedy special, Kate Berlant and John Early were both featured cast members on The Characters — a unabashedly absurd Netflix original comedy series that also starred Tim Robinson of SNL and I Think You Should Leave fame.

As she is already struggling with enough of the common pressures of adolescence, a teenage girl (former Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast member Michelle Trachtenberg) begins to suffer even stranger circumstances after her mom suddenly reveals the shocking news that her estranged father was an extra-terrestrial.

Why it’s worth checking out if you like Kate Berlant: In 2018, the frequent voice actor landed a role as a series regular on an animated comedy series in the form of Cory, the best friend to the central character of the Facebook Watch original, Human Kind Of — a clever, sci-fi twist on the modern coming-of-age story from creator Diana McCorry.

For those who caught Kate Berlant in Don’t Worry Darling and loved her performance enough to binge through all of the titles above already, keep an eye out for her next project. The comedian is starring in an upcoming comedy called First Time Female Director, which is actually the directorial debut of fellow comic and former Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast member, Chelsea Peretti. Movie-going has certainly changed since the start of the pandemic, but one big screen maxim is most definitely holding true: if it's October, people want to watch horror films. This fact has significantly boosted the box office in the last few weeks, with Parker Finn's Smile performing incredibly well – and it's why we are not surprised in the least to see that the number one movie domestically this past weekend was David Gordon Green's Halloween Ends. That being said, there are good reasons to be concerned about what will happen in the weeks ahead.

Halloween Ends Dominates, But Has The Weakest Opening Of The Movies In The New Trilogy

Taken purely at face value, Halloween Ends did well during its opening weekend at the box office. Being a Blumhouse production, it's a film that didn't cost a lot to make (USA Today pins the budget between $20-30 million), and a $43.1 million haul in its first three days (via The Numbers) means that the movie is on its way to making a profit. Additionally, its currently marked as being the twelfth biggest debut of 2022 thus far, sandwiched between two titles that definitely cost a lot more to make: David Yates' Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore ($42.2 million) and Daniel Espinosa's Morbius ($39 million).

Unfortunately, the shine comes off the numbers rather fast as soon as you start doing a bit of analysis. 

For starters, one can't help but notice that Halloween Ends' opening weekend performance is worse than those put up by David Gordon Green's two previous franchise installments, 2018's Halloween ($76.2 million) and 2021's Halloween Kills ($49.4 million). It's not totally fair to compare the new movie to the former, as that film didn't come out during the pandemic, was bolstered by waves of critical hype, and resurrected the franchise... but the latter comparison is more valid and is troubling.

It's often the case that trilogy finales get a box office bump because even the casual fans want to see how everything is brought to a conclusion, but we're not seeing that here, and one has to wonder if the reason is because of the fact that Universal Pictures decided to simultaneously release Halloween Ends in theaters and on streaming. It's wholly believable that the aforementioned casual fans still watched the movie, but their interest level only took them as far as creating a Peacock subscription instead of going to their local theater. Needless to say, that's a bad thing for the big screen experience.

It may additionally be the case  that this is only the start of Halloween Ends' Peacock-related woes on the big screen. Like its sequel, Halloween Kills was also given a hybrid  release when it came out last October, and it ended up spelling disaster for the movie in its second Friday-to-Sunday. After making nearly $50 million in its debut, it sunk a staggering 71 percent from weekend-to-weekend. 

Some of the blame was put on the exciting release of Denis Villeneuve's blockbuster adaptation of Dune, but analysists also pointed the finger at Halloween Kills being available to stream. The people most passionate about seeing the movie on the big screen went to see it opening weekend, and everyone else settled for Peacock.

It's hard not to see the exact same scenario playing out this year with Halloween Ends. In addition to streaming stealing its audience, next week will also see the release of Jaume Collet-Serra's Black Adam. I fear the new horror movie only making seven figures in its sophomore weekend, which would be a nightmare scenario. 

I didn't understand the logic when Universal announced the hybrid strategy for Halloween Ends in August, and I don't understand it now that the first wave of the movie's box office results are in.

Smile Continues To Inspired Wide, Box Office-Related Grins

While the hybrid release model has left Halloween Ends in a precarious position, Smile is continuing to prove the incredible value of a theatrical exclusive release. Based on what is featured in the chart above, it may not appear as though Parker Finn's new horror movie put up much of a fight against the major franchise release (it's never a great look when the #1 movie makes more than three times that of #2), but that's deceptive. What Smile has done is rather incredible.

A three day total of $12.4 million may not seem that impressive, but perspective shifts when you remember that the film made $18.5 last weekend. That's a 33 percent weekend-to-weekend drop coming off an insane 18 percent weekend-to-weekend drop... and that's not even the most amazing part. You'd think Halloween Ends would steal a large percentage of Smile's audience – what with them both being R-rated horror movies – but that didn't really happen. Instead, the original feature is continuing to prove itself as one of the greatest box office stories of 2022.

To date, Smile has made $71.2 million at home and $137.6 million globally. By this time next week it's possible that its ticket sales in the United States and Canada will surpass the numbers put up by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's Scream in the early months of the year, which is pretty staggering. Its in the process of solidifying its place in the domestic Top 20 of 2022, and there are still two full weekends ahead in October before we get to the scary main event that is Halloween at the end of the month.

Looking ahead to next week, not only will movie-goers get to see the long-awaited release of Black Adam starring Dwayne Johnson, but Hollywood is also tossing out some counterprogramming in the form of Ol Parker's Ticket To Paradise – a new romantic comedy reuniting George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Don’t Worry Darling finally opened in theaters last month, though some are still talking about the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding the production. The topic that’s really been making headlines is the alleged feud between director Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh, the movie’s lead actor. Wilde has mostly tried to distance herself – and her movie – from the rumors, though she’s also spoken out and denied rumors of friction between her and her leading lady. Now, in the aftermath of the movie’s release, the director has given credit to Pugh for making “a really wise comment” in regard to the purported feud drama.

Olivia Wilde addressed the Florence Pugh rumors a few weeks ago – along with the reports that Harry Styles spit on co-star Chris Pine during the movie’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Those are only a few pieces of purported drama that’s been linked to Don’t Worry Darling. Wilde spoke more about the various controversies during an interview and, amid the chat, she evoked Florence Pugh. As the director explained, she felt that Pugh made an astute assertion regarding how the personal lives of those involved in the movie have been affected by the flurry of reports:

What she’s essentially saying to Elle is that when one is a reality TV star, they’re aware that their personal life will be on display for the world to see. But the Don’t Worry Darling cast, as she suggests, aren’t in such a position, since they’re simply looking to promote a feature film with fictional content. Many people are sure to have their opinions on the director’s sentiments, but few would argue that the stars’ private matters have been at the forefront of this ongoing drama. 

Much has especially been said about the relationship between Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles, who reportedly met and eventually paired off while making the movie. Some people have even gone as far as to question whether Wilde left ex-beau Jason Sudeikis for Styles. The Booksmart director has since shot down those assumptions, saying that her and Sudeikis’ “relationship was over long before I met Harry.”

But as previously mentioned, there’ve been a lot of eyes on Olivia Wilde’s status with Florence Pugh. This speculation began in earnest after a leaked video showed Wilde asking Shia LaBeouf (who she claimed she’d fired) to come back to the project. In the clip, the filmmaker also said that his return would be “a bit of a wake-up call for Miss Flo.” Pugh has remained mum as to whether she’s on speaking terms with Wilde though, like the director, she is proud of Don’t Worry Darling. That notion is based on a heartfelt message Pugh penned around the time the film hit theaters.

There’s not telling what’s what when it comes to the relationship between the two former collaborators. But at the very least, it seems they both believe that their personal lives should not be topics of conversation amid the release of their movie.

One of the hottest concert tickets you can score this year is to Harry Styles’ Love On Tour arena shows, which are currently taking place in North America until mid-November. The star of Olivia Wilde’s thriller Don’t Worry Darling is known to put on an eventful show full of dancing, boas, proposals and sometimes dialing a crowd member’s ex. But, there are some occupational hazards, as one video hilariously illustrated. 

Harry Styles got a bottle thrown at his groin during his Friday show in Chicago, Illinois and yes, an audience member caught the moment on their phone as it went down. Check out the video of the “As It Was” singer, per a fan on Twitter: 

The singer and actor was in between songs and talking with the crowd when a bottle flung right toward his “sweet spot,” leading him to take a moment to pause. Harry Styles reacted by saying “that’s unfortunate” as he surely felt a bit of pain from the jab before saying he was going to “shake it off” and proceeding with the show by asking the crowd who among them hailed from Chicago. 

A lot of random things have flown Harry Styles way mid-concert during his shows. In another viral moment, he asked the crowd “Who threw the chicken nugget?" at a show during his 15-night residency at Madison Square Garden over the summer. Other items that fans have snuck into shower Styles with hats, tiaras, boas and signs with all sorts of things on them. His fans just really want to connect and have his attention, and in this case, it went a bit far, as the bottle hit him right in his crotch. But come on, let's not throw everything at the guy, he's trying to put on a show for ya. 

Harry Styles's third studio album, Harry’s House, was released back in May and has remained a top streaming and best-selling album throughout the year. Aside from being one of the biggest musicians touring right now, recently Styles has entered the world of Hollywood. Styles was introduced as Marvel character Eros at the end of 2021’s Eternals and he was one of the stars of Olivia Wilde’s movie, Don’t Worry Darling, alongside Florence Pugh, Chris Pine and Gemma Chan. 

Styles began dating his now-girlfriend Olivia Wilde while working on Don’t Worry Darling and they are still going strong after premiering the movie and a host of controversies and drama around its release. Wilde has been seen jamming at Harry Styles Love On Tour shows before like the supportive partner she is. 

Following Don’t Worry Darling, Harry Styles is also starring in Amazon Prime’s My Policeman. The drama based on a book is about a secret gay romance that swelters in 1950s England at a time when two men going public with their affections was especially looked down upon. You can check out the early reactions for My Policeman ahead of the movie hitting Prime Video on November 4. 

You can also check out Styles on tour, albeit the tickets are hard to come by, in Chicago and Los Angeles this fall.  

A few months ago, Florence Pugh rocked a bright pink sheer Valentino dress in an act to free the nipple. The look went viral and the conversation around the free nipple movement came back into the zeitgeist. Now, Olivia Wilde is also speaking up in support of the movement, after she appeared on the cover of Elle wearing a top that covers half her chest. 

This all comes after the drama surrounding Don’t Worry Darling, which was a film that stars Florence Pugh that Oliva Wilde directed. Even though the stories of alleged issues behind-the-scenes took over the internet (none of it has been confirmed), they are both clearly in support of women wearing whatever they want. As you can see from Wilde’s post, she is all for freeing the nipple:

Wilde has been an advocate for women’s rights and expression for a long time. Back in 2021, she spoke to Vogue about this exact topic. The journalist brought up a viral breastfeeding photo that the actor/filmmaker had posted and asked if Wilde supported the #FreetheNipple movement. The actress responded saying,

Wilde is a mother of two and has posted about breastfeeding. As she said, she is trying to break the stigma around freeing the nipple. As mentioned, she posted a photo on her Instagram back in 2016 of her breastfeeding her child and added the caption #neverunderestimatethepowerofawoman. 

Both actresses have been loud and proud about their support of women’s rights, especially when it comes to what they are allowed to wear. However, there are also lots of critics who have spoken out against these fashion statements. Florence Pugh has said that there are people who were “aggravated” by her fashion choices. The Little Women actress also said it was “alarming” how mad people got over her outfit. 

Since then, Jessica Chastain defended Pugh’s dress, and lots of other celebrities have spoken out in support and rocked the sheer look. The Midsommar actress has since worn another sheer pink look, and she wore a nude see-through dress at Paris Fashion Week. 

Florence Pugh and Olivia Wilde's movie Don’t Worry Darling is one of the most-talked about films on the 2022 movie schedule, and Pugh has another movie coming out later this year. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more amazing fashion statements from both women in the near future. 

Typically, the summer blockbuster season is where we see the biggest movies of the year, both in terms of scope and box office returns. But, the fun at your local movie house doesn’t have to come to an end at the conclusion of Labor Day weekend. In fact, some of the biggest 2022 movie releases happen to be scheduled to premiere throughout the fall. 

If you are the type that likes to plan out your theater trips months in advance (or simply want to know what you can expect to see on the silver screen as the temps start dropping), you’ve come to the right place, because we are about to break down a couple dozen of the biggest fall 2022 movies that are coming to a movie house near you (as well as various streaming services) as well as those that have already been released. Pinocchio (September 8, 2022)

One of two movies based on the classic fairy tale scheduled for release in 2022, Robert Zemeckis’ long in the works Pinocchio follows the lonely toymaker Geppetto (Tom Hanks) as he builds and raises the wooden figure (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) like a real boy. The live-action/animation hybrid landed September 8 on Disney+. Cynthia Erivo, Luke Evans, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt also appear on the Pinocchio cast

The Woman King (September 16, 2022)

Gina Prince-Bythewood’s upcoming historical epic, The Woman King, centers on Nanisca (Viola Davis), a Dahomey Amazon general as she and a new recruit named Nawi (Thuso Mbedu) set out to defend their kingdom’s honor and get revenge on those who brought pain, suffering, and loss to their kind. The movie made its theatrical debut on September 16.

Don’t Worry Darling (September 23, 2022)

Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller, Don’t Worry Darling, centers on young married couple Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack Chambers (Harry Styles), as they move to a seemingly idyllic company town in the 1950s. As the inquisitive Alice begins to find out, however, looks can be deceiving. The controversial movie landed in theaters on September 23.

Blonde (September 28, 2022)

The long-awaited Marilyn Monroe biographical drama Blonde premiered September 28 on Netflix  and welcomed audiences into the Hollywood icon’s short and tortured life. Ana de Armas led the star-studded Blonde cast which also featured Bobby Cannavale, Adrien Brody, and others playing fictionalized versions of those closest to her.

Bros (September 30, 2022)

On September 30, the Billy Eichner-led romantic comedy Bros opened in theaters. Despite not bringing in a ton of cash at the box office, the movie was nearly universally loved by critics and audiences alike with respective Rotten Tomatoes scores of 89% and 91% upon release.

Hocus Pocus 2 (September 30, 2022)

Nearly 30 years after they were defeated and locked away once again, the Sanderson Sisters (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy) are out on the loose again in Hocus Pocus 2. The sequel, which also features Doug Jones, Tony Hale, Sam Richardson, and Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham, debuted September 30 on Disney+. Talk about a way to kick off the Halloween season.

Amsterdam (October 7, 2022)

David O. Russell’s Amsterdam was at one point one of the biggest mystery projects in Hollywood, with the only revealed details being about its incredibly stacked cast, which includes Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, John David Washington, Robert De Niro, Taylor Swift, and more than a dozen others. The period drama following three friends as they are accused of committing a murder in 1930s Europe opened theatrically on October 7.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (October 7, 2022)

The classic children’s book, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, got the big screen treatment when Will Speck and Josh Gordon’s live-action/animated comedy opened October 7. The movie, which features Shawn Mendes in the titular role, follows the fun-loving reptile as he attempts to get residents in his New York City neighborhood to see him as more than a singing croc with a mouth full of sharp teeth. Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy, and Stranger Things star Brett Gelman round out the cast of what looks to be an incredibly fun and wholesome time.

Hellraiser (October 7, 2022)

Clive Barker’s Hellraiser films will forever go down as some of the best horror movies of all time, and so it should come as no surprise that they are being remade. On October 7, the new Hellraiser debuted on Hulu and immediately became a hit with critics like CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg, who gave the movie 4 out of 5 stars in his review of David Bruckner’s supernatural horror flick. 

Tár (October 7, 2022)

On October 7, Todd Field’s drama film Tár opened in theaters and told the story of orchestra conductor Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett), as she becomes the first female chief conductor of a major orchestra in Germany, per Deadline. This intriguing film also stars Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Sophie Kauer, and Mark Strong.

All Quiet On The Western Front (October 14, 2022)

On October 14, audiences in select theaters across the country will be able to witness the brutality of Edward Berger’s adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, a harrowing military drama set in the height of the “War to End All Wars.” The WWI movie will find its streaming home later in the month when it premieres October 28 on Netflix.

Halloween Ends (October 14, 2022)

On October 14, Blumhouse released Halloween Ends, the third and final chapter of the production company’s saga set in the iconic horror franchise. Although the future of the franchise is a little unclear right now, Halloween Ends will surely give longtime fans of the property something to look forward to this Halloween season.

Till (October 14, 2022)

The story of the Emmett Till is one of the most tragic in the American Civil Rights Movement, and it came to the big screen with Chinonye Chukwu’s biographical drama Till. Focusing both on the Chicago teenager who was brutally murdered in Mississippi in 1955 and his grieving mother, Mamie Till Mobley, who held an open-casket funeral so the world could see what was done to her son, the movie opened in theaters October 14.

The Banshees Of Inisherin (October 21, 2022)

Martin McDonagh released his upcoming drama film, The Banshees of Inisherin, in theaters on October 21. The movie, which has a cast featuring Brendan Gleeson, Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon, will tell the story of two longtime buddies whose friendship begins to break apart, causing a whole bevy of issues for themselves and others on their remote Irish island. 

Black Adam (October 21, 2022)

On October 21, the world finally got to see Dwayne Johnson go from successful wrestler-turned-actor to a comic book hero when Black Adam opens in theaters. The highly-anticipated movie about one of the comic world’s toughest anti-heroes has been hyped up by longtime fans, Warner Bros., and even The Rock himself, who just couldn’t help himself in the lead-up to the debut of the film’s first trailer.

My Policeman (October 21, 2022)

On October 21, My Policeman saw Harry Styles play Tom Burgess, a Brighton police officer in the 1950s with a secret that could ruin his marriage, career, and standing in the community. The movie, which also stars The Crown Season 4 star Emma Corrin and David Dawson will make its streaming debut just weeks later on November 4 on Prime Video.

Ticket To Paradise (October 21, 2022)

George Clooney and Julia Roberts teamed up for the sixth time in Ol Parker’s upcoming romantic comedy, Ticket to Paradise, which will see the Ocean’s Eleven cast members play a divorced couple who attempt to stop their daughter from making the same mistake they made all those years ago. The dynamic duo got back together on the big screen (and maybe in the story) on October 21.

Armageddon Time (October 28, 2022)

James Gray’s period drama Armageddon Time will follow a young boy named Paul Graff (Michael Banks Repeta) as he is forced to face identity, race, and coming of age after being sent to a prestigious preparatory academy. The movie, which also features Anne Hathaway, Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Chastain, and Jeremy Strong, saw a limited release on October 28 before going nationwide on November 4.

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (November 4, 2022)

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival in September, where it became an “instant midnight classic” according to CinemaBlend’s Mike Reyes. On November 4, the movie about the iconic polka-turned-parody master landed on the Roku streaming channel with Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe portraying Weird Al.

Bardo, False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths (November 4, 2022)

Alejandro González Iñárritu won back-to-back Academy Awards for his decorated movies Birdman and The Revenant, and after a seven-year break, the Mexican filmmaker will soon try for his third Best Director Oscar with Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths. The movie, which follows a journalist and filmmaker embarks on an existential journey, opened for a limited theatrical release on November 4 before landing on Netflix on December 16.

Enola Holmes 2 (November 4, 2022)

Those who have been waiting anxiously for the next chapter in Enola Holmes’ journey will wait no more when Enola Holmes 2 premiered on November 4. The 2022 Netflix movie saw the return of Millie Bobby Brown’s titular heroine and Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes, as well as several new characters.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (November 11, 2022)

Although there has yet to be a trailer, pictures, or release of plot details about one of the most anticipated upcoming Marvel movies, comic book film fans around the world are beyond excited for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. With so many questions surrounding the movie, like who will take on the Black Panther moniker following the death of Chadwick Boseman, it is easy to see why so many couldn't wait for the film’s November 11 release.

Spirited (November 11, 2022) 

There have been countless remakes and reimaginings of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, but having another adaptation won’t hurt anyone. On November 11, Spirited, a modern musical version of the holiday classic starring Ryan Reynolds, Will Ferrell, and others will land in theaters. The movie will became available for anyone with an Apple TV+ subscription starting November 18.

Disenchanted (November 18, 2022)

In November 2007, moviegoers fell in love with Giselle (Amy Adams), Robert Philip (Patrick Dempsey), and the rest of the Enchanted cast with its hilarious and heartfelt take on the fairy tale genre. The long-awaited sequel, Disenchanted premiered November 18 on Disney+, and took audiences back to the magical land of Andalasia once again.

The Menu (November 18, 2022)

Ralph Fiennes has largely shied away from playing creepy characters since he last portrayed Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter finale, but that will change with Mark Mylod’s upcoming dark comedy horror movie, The Menu. In the movie, Fiennes takes on the role of Chef Slowik, who specializes in a rather unique culinary experience that pushes boundaries for his wealthy guests. The unnerving movie, which also stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, was first served up November 18.

She Said (November 18, 2022)

The Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse case was one of the biggest moments in the Me Too movement in 2017, and now the story of how the allegations surfaced and took down one of the biggest players in Hollywood is coming to the big screen. Directed by Mari Schrader, She Said will center on Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan) and Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan) and how the New York Times reporters turned a story no one wanted to talk about into a story no one could not talk about. The film debuted November 18th.

Devotion (November 23, 2022)

J.D. Dillard’s action drama, Devotion, opened November 23, and tell the true story of American fighter pilots Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors) and Tom Hudner (Glen Powell) whose actions during the Korean War helped turn them into two of the most highly decorated wingmen in U.S. military history.

The Fabelmans (November 23, 2022)

Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama, The Fabelmans, debuted November 23 following a limited rollout in New York City and Los Angeles on November 11. The film will follow Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle and Mateo Zoryna Francis-Deford), a young boy based on Spielberg, as he grows up in post World War II Arizona and dreams of becoming a filmmaker. 

Strange World (November 23, 2022)

On November 23, Walt Disney Animation Studios released Strange World, a science-fiction action spectacle starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, an explorer who travels with his family to the far reaches of the galaxy where they uncover all sorts of fantastical and dangerous creatures and terrain. Trippy visuals, Jake Gyllenhaal, and a new Disney dog? What’s not to love?

Well, this should be more than enough to get you started on your fall moviegoing experience. Now all there is left to do is book a babysitter, buy your tickets, and take off to the world of cinema.

There are a lot of genres that are struggling at the box office in 2022, but horror most definitely isn't one of them. Between Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's Scream, Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone, and Jordan Peele's Nope, scary movies have been some of the year's biggest surprises, and that trend is continuing with Parker Finn's Smile. The film dominated its competition last weekend, and the numbers its done since this past Friday are even more impressive while going up against a pair of new releases in David O. Russell's Amsterdam and Will Speck and Josh Gordon's Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.

Smile Drops Only 22 Percent Weekend-To-Weekend To Claim Its Second Box Office Victory 

It's typical for a new release to see its box office revenue dip between 40 and 60 percent in its second weekend compared to its first three days in theaters, but Smile can now be designated as a statistical outlier. The film was deemed a winner last  Sunday when it made $22.6 million in its debut, but now it is a certified hit. The estimated $17.6 million the original horror feature has brought in registers as just a 22 percent drop weekend-to-weekend, which is, needless to say, awesome. 

Awesome as the results are, one could also call them predictable. That original $22.6 million made by Smile indicates a whole lot of buzz, and that buzz is backed by a solid 78 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Throw in the fact that we are now in the heart of spooky season, and you have a formula for a big second weekend score. The positive performance by Zach Cregger's Barbarian last month (not to mention its continued earnings in October) gave us a preview of movie-goers' hunger for good, original horror in the run-up to Halloween, and Parker Finn's movie has fully capitalized.

On top of the money that Smile has made domestically, The Numbers says that it has also already made $40 million abroad. That brings its worldwide total to $89.9 million and guarantees that it will be considered one of the year's greatest box office stories by the time that 2022 comes to a close. This is a movie that, per Variety, only cost $17 million to make, and its already quintupled that number. Even when you subtract marketing and publicity costs, this is a huge win.

Clearly Smile is playing with a hot hand, but what will be fascinating to observe is its performance in its third weekend. Clearly Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile and Amsterdam didn't steal away its core demographics (more on those two films in a minute), but there is a big movie coming up this Friday that absolutely will: David Gordon Green's Halloween Ends. The hyped conclusion to the modern Halloween trilogy is looking to capture the attention of the exact same audience as Smile, and that may result in a big fall in the numbers released next Sunday.

Halloween Ends is going to be dealing with a box office handicap, as it was announced this past summer that the film is going to be a hybrid release that goes to theaters and Peacock simultaneously. Will that have any kind of impact on audiences who would potentially buy tickets for a big screen double feature with Michael Myers and Smile? We'll find out in a few days.

Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile Puts Up Rather Mediocre Numbers In Its Opening Weekend

Unfortunately, another pattern that has continued at the 2022 box office this weekend is seeing one particular movie dominate while everything else does modest business or worse. In the case of Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, one could argue for it being more on the "modest" side of the scale, but that's partially influenced by the fact that it at least managed to make eight figures in its opening weekend.

The $11.5 million it made is good enough to rank Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile as the thirty-third biggest opening weekend of the year – sandwiched between Baltasar Kormákur's Beast and Barbarian – and while that doesn't look great, the bigger issue is the fact that the movie cost more than both of those films' budgets combined. According to the New York Times, the family movie based on the book of the same name had a budget in the neighborhood of $50 million, which means it still has quite a while to go before it will be deemed profitable. 

Despite Its Star-Studded Cast, Amsterdam Does Little At The Box Office And Settles For Third Place

The filmmakers behind Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile are probably disappointed by the box office results, but one thing that the film can hang its hat on is the fact that it didn't do nearly as badly as Amsterdam, the only other new wide release that came out this weekend. The mystery-driven feature sports an ensemble cast that is full of popular names – including Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Anya Taylor Joy, and more – but it failed to wow critics and now it's apparently failing to wow audiences.

The bad kicker here is how much it cost 20th Century Studios to make Amsterdam. Bringing so many talented stars together isn't inexpensive, and Deadline says that David O. Russell was given $80 million to work with. When a film manages to only make about eight percent of its budget back in its opening weekend, it seems pretty fair to apply the word "flop."

Hopefully next weekend's box office numbers are a bit rosier as a result of the final battle between Jamie Lee Curtis' Laurie Strode and the boogeyman Michael Myers. Halloween Ends arrives in theaters on Friday, and we'll have the news on its box office performance here on CinemaBlend Sunday morning.

After everyone has learned the extensive timeline of Don’t Worry Darling drama, and everything else that has come with it, the psychological thriller has finally come to screens and it’s, uh…average? Bad? It’s hard to explain.

Despite Florence Pugh and the film receiving a several-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, Don’t Worry Darling was arguably one of the flops of the year, featuring pretty lukewarm reviews for a film that was so anticipated. But, as someone who has seen the film, I’m going to say that it wasn’t all bad. 

There are several things in Don’t Worry Darling that worked, and several other things that fell flat, but instead of getting into every little critique I have of the film, we’re going to talk about three things that I felt worked for the film, and three that didn’t. Let’s get started. 

Worked: The Acting Performances Of Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, And KiKi Layne

The entire Don’t Worry Darling cast is filled to the brim with so much talent. But three of the cast members really stood out to me with their acting performances. 

Of course, I have to mention my girl, Florence Pugh. The actress has already proven herself to be capable in several other roles, whether that be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Yelena Belova (a character she’s going to be reprising in the upcoming Thunderbolts movie), or in the fantastic A24 horror movie, Midsommar. But no matter what, she gives it 100% and this movie is no different. She was outstanding in every way and shined. 

Another person I want to highlight is KiKi Layne – so much so that I am peeved she was cut from most of the movie, because for the time she was in the film, her scenes were powerful. I wish that more of her story had been left in, because she was a real scene-stealer. 

The last person who really took my breath away was Chris Pine. I’ve always loved his work and knew he was a good actor, but I think his portrayal of Frank was one of his standout performances, and it’s a shame that it’s under such a ‘meh’ script. But, we’ll get into that in a bit. 

Fell Flat: Harry Styles’ Performance

Look, I love Harry Styles. I was a One Direction girl. I listen to his music nonstop now. He has a great voice and a great stage presence. 

But, for the love of God, someone get him a better acting coach, please.

On a good note, I do think that there is potential for Styles’ to be a good actor, but I feel like he hasn’t been given good direction in terms of how to properly show emotion in his voice. I know he could possibly do it if he’s given the proper help, but for now, I really think he should be kept out of spotlight roles until he gets a handle on how to really act. 

Which makes me nervous, considering he was just in a Marvel post-credits scene for Eternals. Let’s hope My Policeman is a better performance from him. 

Worked: The Cinematography And Sets

This movie, visually, was outstanding. Seriously. 

In the year 2022, we have seen some crazy set design and cinematography. We had Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Top Gun: Maverick, and what will likely be a VFX masterpiece, the upcoming Avatar: The Way of Water, is yet to come. 

There’s something I really do love about Don’t Worry Darling and the way it was shot. The sets that were designed for The Victory Project were truly outstanding, and how it was shot is something that I will probably always love to talk about. The way Pugh’s face is framed when she begins to spiral is so magnificently done it makes me wonder why we aren’t talking more about this film visually. 

Fell Flat: The Climax

I am very adamant about the fact that your film could be shot on a literal iPhone, or even a Nokia, but as long as it has a good story, you’re golden. Some of my favorite films of all time have been independent movies that no one has ever heard of, but it’s because they have great stories. 

Don’t Worry Darling wasn’t that. 

Without getting into specifics just in case there are people who haven’t seen the film here, the way in which we reach the climax doesn’t feel earned. As an audience member, we are given specific clues at the beginning of the film about where we think this all might be heading, but in reality, a lot of it feels thrown away in terms of where the climax is taken. 

The only good thing about the climax of this film is, again, Pugh’s performance was spot on and made me want to keep watching her. But, there’s just something about the way the story was told that made me feel led on, and that the story being told was completely abandoned. 

Here’s the best way I can describe it – Don’t Worry Darling’s script feels like the first draft of a film that could have been great. But they stopped at the first draft stage. 

Worked: The Costume Design

The costumes in this film, ugh, I love them. 

Granted, this could just be how I feel when it comes to period clothing, but they knocked it out of the park with the costume design in this film. While the clothes and hairstyles were basically taken from 1950s/early '60s, it was almost a good combination of older styles with a more modern take, and I loved it. 

The vibrancy of the colors were done so well, too. For a film that really relies on the scary factor and unknown feelings that Pugh is going through, thinking that she is slowly losing her mind throughout the film, I love that they decided to go with a color scheme that was vibrant and colorful. 

It really shows the disconnect that Pugh’s character has between the world she is physically living in and the mental state she is experiencing. Despite the fact that everything around her is colorful, her mind is colorless and worrisome.

I mean, if I could dress like Florence Pugh or Harry Styles, I would do so in a heartbeat. I need to get those outfits, stat. 

Fell Flat: The Ending 

God, a part of me doesn’t want to talk about the ending here. I’m not going to get into details about the Don’t Worry Darling ending, because if for some reason you haven’t seen it, I don’t want to ruin the twist that it does have – regardless of how I feel about said twist. 

Without spoilers, I can openly say here that it’s just...not good, and leaves you with more questions than answers.

I said it in my second ‘fell flat’ point, and I’ll say it again – this script feels like the first draft of what could have been an exceptional film, but the way it ends feels unearned and rushed, and I despise it. Apparently, there was another draft with another ending that is so much better, and if you’ve seen the film, be sure to check out the alternate ending, because my God, it would have made eons more sense. 

I’m going to be honest and say a big reason I ended up seeing this film was because of the drama that was surrounding it, but at the end of the day, it felt like an average film that could have been so much better. Here’s hoping that Pugh’s next big film, Dune 2, will be a better fit for her.  

It’s been a few months since Florence Pugh broke the Internet with a sheer dress at a Rome fashion show. At the time, she was supporting Valentino when she wore the now-infamous pink number, and the look later blew up after trolls started commenting about being able to see her nipples. Well, Paris Fashion Week just happened, and Pugh was back at it, supporting the fashion house first with a fun cape and then with another see-through dinner outfit. 

Heading to the Valentino Womenswear Spring/Summer 2023 show over the weekend, the star stepped out in pink and white. The former in particular seems to really be her color, as Pugh's rocked pink numerous times for events during the Barbiecore era, including the previously mentioned Valentino show. In Paris, her short dress and pretty cape were accompanied by chunky, close-toed shoes. 

The star was also caught during Day 7 of Paris Fashion Week in a separate Valentino number which she wore to a dinner for the fashion house. She shared the look to her own Instagram, captioning the post “Trust the button" and using the Valentino hashtag. That look provided a nice parallel to the “free the fucking nipple” dress she wore only a few months ago.

As Fashion Week concluded, Pugh also called the weekend “special” and wrote to Maison Valentino ‘it’s always a pleasure.”  She also shared a separate video to her Instagram Stories showing her walking in the look. 

While the dresses she wore for Fashion Week was similarly sheer,  this two-piece look came and went with a little less backlash. In fact, the  previous dress went viral after Pugh made a “technically they’re covered” joke on her own social media, which may have been what  led to some people voicing their thoughts more loudly.  Pugh later addressed how the negativity impacted her. The good news? A lot of people were sympathetic and other big names like Jessica Chastain spoke out in support of the actress. 

Meanwhile, it’s interesting the actress had the time for Fashion Week. She’s reportedly been so busy with Dune 2, she missed out on press days for Don’t Worry Darling. Though that may have more to do with the alleged Don’t Worry Darling drama than an overbooked schedule. 

The naked dress seems as if it’s having some staying power. Nicole Kidman has rocked the naked dress. Similarly, Megan Fox wore a see-through number to the VMAs. Even at Paris Fashion Week, Bella Hadid walked the catwalk in a  sheer number and garnered attention for a separate spray-on dress. But Florence Pugh still has the corner on that market, thanks to her high-end collaborations. 

Halloween is now less than a month away, and it's pretty damn clear that movie-goers are excited. In the past few weeks, films of the creepy and scary variety have been topping the box office, including Olivia Wilde's Don't Worry Darling and Zach Cregger's Barbarian, and it feels like at least some of that is an extension of "'tis the season." Naturally, the reason I bring this up is because this weekend saw yet another horror title dominate on the big screen, as Parker Finn's Smile has become an instant hit. 

Unfortunately, what's good news for Smile is bad news for Nicholas Stoller's Bros... but I'll get into that after you scope out the full Top 10 below:

2022 Has Another Win For Original Horror Movies With Smile

Between the aforementioned Don't Worry Darling, Jordan Peele's Nope, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's Scream, and Scott Derrickson's The Black Phone, there are a lot of horror titles ranked in the Top 25 domestic opening weekends in 2022, and Smile is the latest to join the club. The film got buzz jump started with its premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas a couple week before its release, and it sports a solid 75 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. The positive word of mouth has resulted in the movie earning $22 million in its first three days in theaters, per The Numbers.

It's hard to look at it as anything but a big genre win. While the feature does have some recognizable names in its cast– including Jessie T. Usher, Kal Penn, Kyle Gallner Judy Reyes and Rob Morgan – it doesn't have a big anchoring it, and it isn't based on any recognizable IP (it's technically an adaptation of Parker Finn's short film Laura Hasn't Slept). This movie's success is arguably the result of positive word of mouth, smart marketing, and a perfect release date, which makes it an anomaly in the modern entertainment industry – and an exciting one.

Like with most horror movies these days, Smile business at the box office is very much boosted by the fact that it was not a film that was expensive to make. Variety reports that the budget was only $17 million. There are still publicity and marketing expenses that need to be accounted for, but obviously the release is well on its way to being considered a huge success.

Smile is additionally in a position to demonstrate some legs. There is definitely some significant competition on the big screen coming in the next few weeks, including David Gordon Green's Halloween Ends and Jaume Collet-Serra's Black Adam, but spooky season is going to be keeping interest up for good horror movies, and Parker Finn's film is going to be around to feed the appetite.

Barbarian is a good model to at which to look. The film was released almost a month ago, and while its opening weekend saw it do less than half the business that Smile did in its first three days, it has stuck around in the Top 10 and continued to make money. It was only made with a reported $4 million budget (per Variety), and to date it has made $34.8 in its theatrical run (which includes the $1.7 million it has made from outside the United States and Canada).

While Smile doesn't match Barbarian when it comes to critical response (the latter movie sports a 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), it has received a better grade from CinemaScore ("B-" vs, "C+"), it has been released closer to Halloween, and it is off to a faster start in ticket sales. It could very likely end up being called one of the biggest success stories of the season.

Bros Continues A Sad Trend For Big Screen, R-Rated Comedies

There's a lot to be happy about when it comes to the success of Smile, but Bros is a very different sadly. It's another title that has earned tremendously positive word of mouth following a festival premiere in September, but the end results are very different. The LGBTQ+ comedy had to settle for fourth place in its opening weekend, making only $4.8 million and ranking behind both Don't Worry Darling (in its second weekend) and Gina Prince-Bythewood's The Woman King (in its third weekend).

It's a bummer to see a great movie fail, and this very much is that, but it's also hard not to see this as troubling extension of a larger trend concerning theatrically-released R-rated comedies: they seem to be going extinct. Since the start of the pandemic, we've seen the release of a few titles in that specific category – including Jason Woliner's Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Max Barbakow's Palm Springs, Michael Showalter's The Lovebirds, and Judd Apatow's The King Of Staten Island... but all of those films were given streaming or digital releases. 

Excluding the more action-centric features – including David Leitch's Bullet Train, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah's Bad Boys For Life, Patrick Hughes' The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard – there are only two R-rated comedies listed among the Top 100 domestic releases since the start of 2020, and they are Jeff Tremaine's Jackass Forever and Miguel Arteta's Like A Boss. Following the disheartening release of Bros, it's hard not to feel like being in a crowded movie theater with hundreds of people in simultaneous uproarious laughter at a bawdy romance or adventure is becoming a thing of the past, and that thought is horrible depressing.

Bullet Train Finally Crosses $100 Million At The Domestic Box Office

To end this week's box office report on a more positive note, one of the late summer's biggest fits finally hit a major milestone, as Bullet Train (released in early August) has finally crossed $100 million at the box office. I first started teasing this development back in early September when the film made it to $92.5 million, but it has only finally hit nine figures now that it has slipped to eighth place in the weekend Top 10 and is playing in fewer than 2,000 locations.

Bullet Train is one of only 13 movies to hit $100 million in 2022, and combined with what it has made abroad the film has earned $236.1 million to date. That makes it the twelfth highest grossing film of the year, ahead of Angus MacLane's Lightyear ($218.9 million).

Coming up this weekend, there are three new releases set to potentially shake up the Top 10, including David O. Russell's star-studded period thriller Amsterdam, Josh Gordon and Will Speck's family-centric Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, and Todd Field's Cate Blanchett-led composer drama Tár. Olivia Wilde's spirited second movie Don't Worry Darling has been heavily covered in recent weeks, though much of that has been over alleged drama between herself and Florence Pugh. Regardless, the movie itself has earned notice for its desert landscapes and pretty, bold costume choices and whether you'd like to look like Wilde, Pugh, or even Harry Styles, we've found all kinds of ways to take inspiration from the new movie.

How To Dress Like Florence Pugh's Alice Chambers

When I first think about Alice in Don't Worry Darling my mind goes to the actress wearing what looks to be her husband Jack's shirt as she waves him off to work each morning. Luckily, shirt dresses are in vogue in real life, and my favorite can be found over at ASOS.

Even better, ASOS offers a curvy version from another brand too! Love how diverse the boyfriend shirt look is and how anyone can rock it. 

In fact, though, Alice Chambers is a big fan of white throughout the movie. The movie's costume designer Arianne Phillips, told Nylon that in any sort of movie with tense moments, white always makes her think of blood, noting, "Every time I see a movie and I see white, I often think there’s going to be blood." Alice wears white a lot in stark contrast to the colors many of her female friends are wearing. The most famous of these dresses comes near the end of the movie and features a sweetheart neckline and a lovely length, like this Revolve dress (though it's more of a maxi if you're short like me). 

If that look is a little pricy, the good news is that white dresses in that length are fairly in right now. So you can dress like Florence Pugh at any price point.

Another notable Alice look is the colorful floral apron she wears while doing housework and preparing meals from her Victory home. The apron was apparently one of the hardest things to get right, as Phillips also told Variety:  

The good news? Anthropologie is usually here for the floral apron, and they have some delightful options right now, including a yellow-ish one like Pugh rocks while keeping house and home in order in the "Utopian" community. 

If yellow isn't your color, have no fear, you can go floral in other color palates, too. Try this Natalie Lete apron or one with birds and butterflies.

Finally, one big way Don't Worry Darling helps Alice's look to stand out is through accessories. Vintage earrings pepper the scenes, but while those are more difficult to find, Alice's hair accessories, from cool headbands to subtle bows, are in demand these days.

How To Dress Like Olivia Wilde's Bunny

Olivia Wilde's character goes for a whole different color palate than Florence Pugh's. She favors a lot of darker shades and bolder prints in black and leopard; she also wears red lipstick more often.  Makeup department head Heba Thorisdottir said this was by design, noting that Alice often favors pink tones to contrast "with the others' red lips." So how best to dress as Bunny? Try a scalloped trim dress. 

If you want to go full glam, in another scene at a party Olivia Wilde rocks a strapless, chartreuse dress with black bow trim. You can get really swanky with this $648 Amur dress at Neiman Marcus,  or you can still rock the bandeau top strapless look the actress wears with this retro (cheaper) dress. 

Another notable look Bunny rocks is a leopard swimsuit. The best part of that look is leopard print never goes out of style and Nordstrom has a period-adjacent and particularly adorable look right now, including the top (below) and these bottoms.

Just don't forget the red lipstick! I've always been fondest of MAC's matte line, and the brand's Russian Red is a solid pick for most skin tones, but there truly are tons of creamy looks and satin styles that would work perfectly with the aesthetic the flick is going for.

How To Dress Like Harry Styles' Jack Chambers

Styles has been known for his bold fashion choices on magazine covers and on stage. As Jack Chambers, he's a whole lot more subdued -- think lots of suits -- but his style is still effortlessly cool. There's more to it than that, but I'm not here to spoil Don't Worry Darling's ending; rather to just highlight it's showy looks. 

While ties complete these looks a majority of times, I do like when Styles rocks the collarless dress shirt and grey suit. (His mother seemingly approves of his looks in the movie too, as she's already shared her thoughts on Olivia Wilde's second movie.)

While any slim fit suit would probably do the trick, I really like the bright blue look the actor rocks that pops up early on in the film when he's readying for work. 

Honestly, the retro short-sleeved shirts worn by Chris Pine, Styles and others in the movie are among my favorite fashion moments. They seem to have already been making a splash even before the movie made a good amount of moolah at the box office, and you can nab a retro look at ASOS.

Months before Don’t Worry Darling came out, all of the drama surrounding the movie led to some major press rumors and allegations. This wasn't just because of the long-rumored feud between Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh, but also because the rumors that occurred during the movie’s Venice premiere involving Harry Styles and Chris Pine. Luckily, one of the stars of the movie, Nick Kroll, has set us straight in joking response to the feud rumors and drama of Don’t Worry Darling. 

Don’t Worry Darling had a wild premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, and among the  notable moments was Harry Styles allegedly spitting on Chris Pine. While talking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Nick Kroll jokingly addressed the gossip of any rumored spitting and that he was the “puppeteer” of how that rumor came about.

While the sarcasm is clear to see in the Sausage Party star, it’s true that behind-the-scenes drama of Don’t Worry Darling is received a lot of attention, and it doesn’t seem to stop. At least the reputedly spitting story was said to be just a fabrication, according to Chris Pine’s representative. Even Harry Styles found humor in the spitting rumors, as if he had nothing better to do in Venice than to spit on his co-star. With all joking aside, Nick Kroll does have a point about the scandalous drama that went on during production. Many members of the general public may not have any idea what this movie is even about since the drama appears to completely take over it all. 

So let the record state that everyone kept their saliva in their own mouths (well, except for Kroll and Styles, who shared a steamy kiss after their movie got a standing ovation). Kroll humorously explained to Jimmy Fallon how he decided to spice up the drama even further.

Based on the reviews that came out ever since Don’t Worry Darling’s theatrical release last Friday, the reactions have been pretty tepid, with Florence Pugh shining throughout. But the psychological thriller did win the number one weekend box office spot at $19.2 million. Whether this box office number came in spite of or because of the growing drama of the cast, who’s to say? However, you cannot deny that all of the attention that the cast has been getting has helped garner a lot of attention for Don't Worry Darling. I wouldn’t be surprised if a movie about the Don’t Worry Darling drama would ever come into play. Maybe it's an intriguing concept for Lifetime or an FX series?

It would be a funny concept if Nick Kroll was the mastermind behind the Venice Film Festival drama. For the most part, it looks to me like all of the feud rumors surrounding the cast of Olivia Wilde’s sophomore movie are the internet looking for drama where it’s unnecessary. It is no surprise that the psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling has already become one of the biggest hits of the fall season. It was already one of the most talked about movies of 2022 before its late September release -- both for the unnerving tension and visually serene, 1950s-era nostalgia onscreen and the Don't Worry Darling drama offscreen, as well. 

However, what truly makes director Olivia Wilde's sophomore directorial hit such a must-see event in Hollywood is the star-studded Don't Worry Darling cast -- led by the always engrossing Florence Pugh and also featuring pop star Harry Styles, franchise royalty Chris Pine, MCU star Gemma Chan, and Wilde herself, too. Those A-listers, along with fellow co-stars Nick Kroll and Sydney Chandler, got together for the film's red carpet premiere at the Venice Film Festival and some of their most photogenic moments at the event were collected for the slideshow below.

SPOILERS are ahead for Don’t Worry Darling. Check out Olivia Wilde's thriller, now playing in theaters, before reading on. 

I don’t know about you, but I left the theater still quite worried about Florence Pugh’s Alice. After two hours of teases and hints at her actual fate in the peculiar 1950s town of Victory, not enough was answered. Sometimes a cliffhanger ending like Don’t Worry Darling is the right call, but I had so many questions and gripes with how the concept was handled that I was left feeling the movie’s mystery was more empty than satisfying. But when I read the original ending to Olivia Wilde’s alleged drama-filled movie, I became more disappointed. Via the initial script, Don't Worry Darling could have fixed a few of the problems I had with the movie’s fade to black. Let’s talk about it. 

Don’t Worry Darling was originally written by brothers Carey and Shane Van Dyke before it was placed on the 2019 Black List, which is an annual survey of the “most-liked” screenplays that were not picked up by producers and studios to become movies. Olivia Wilde reportedly came across the script through the Black List and decided it would be her next film. Wilde’s Booksmart writer Katie Silberman then did a rewrite on the script, and among the changes were some big adjustments to the finale. 

What Was The Original Don’t Worry Darling Ending? 

In the original third act of Don’t Worry Darling, Alice, who is named Evelyn in the script, follows her husband Jack, played by Harry Styles, who's called Clifford in the script. As her suspicions grow about Victory, she watches him go into a house with a "For Sale" sign in front of it, and when she goes in and finds another sign called “Alt-Life Reality.” While she’s not able to get inside the house further, she goes into her husband’s car and finds his briefcase containing ads for the simulation she is in that reads “Successful marriages start in the kitchen!” alongside other sexist slogans and images, including lewd sexual drawings drawn by her husband. She then goes back to that "For Sale" house through a window where she finds herself in 2050, outside of the simulation. 

It’s then Alice/Evelyn learns her husband is a Fry’s Electronics "Employee of the Month" and sees divorce papers addressed to their names. She goes on his computer in real life and learns that the Alt-Life Reality program is a “society of men, by men, and for men,” and watches a disturbing intro video where Chris Pine’s character further explains the twist of the movie. Apparently her husband had to fake her death in order to get her in the simulation. She then finds articles of her going missing, a police search for her and her loved ones mourning her once she is never found, all the while thinking she's a '50s housewife in her ex-husband's fantasy. 

Alice/Evelyn then goes back into the simulation where she has a confrontation with Jack/Clifford before he realizes she’s escaped. She goes back to business as usual before making him an elaborate dinner and hitting him with a shovel and tying him to a bed. When he wakes, it’s then that we learn his intentions: “I wanted us to be happy again” after their failed marriage. The pair go into all their dirty laundry over the years. Alice/Evelyn goes back to 2050, but Jack/Clifford cuts himself free and follows her through the portal. 

In 2050, the pair engage in a physical fight before she stabs him in the ribs with a kitchen knife. Then somehow Alice/Evelyn is back in the 1950s, snatched up by the Alt-Reality team, where Chris Pine’s character tries to convince her that it is reality and she’s gone insane. In the final scene, Alice/Evelyn is at a psychiatric ward when Olivia Wilde’s character Bunny (Betsy in the script) brings her flowers and whispers to her of a nearby portal, and they walk out together, finally free of Victory (hopefully). 

How It Compares To Olivia Wilde’s Movie

Here’s why I like the original ending better. For one, Alice finds her own way out of the simulation rather than being caught by her husband and taken away. It’s more of an active ending for our protagonist rather than her being thrust into learning of her fate. We also get to know more about the kind of man her husband is rather than what happened in the movie, which seems to somewhat underplay his decision to take her away from her normal life by only revealing it at the end and barely developing Jack’s character, along with many others. This includes Kiki Layne’s, who even shared she had “cut” scenes. I like the more gruesome details of him faking her death and Alice getting to see the exact images that inspired him to go into the simulation, including an introductory video for his Alt-Life Reality, which Chris Pine would have absolutely crushed. All this hits home the message of the film a lot better. 

Additionally, I really like the idea of Olivia Wilde’s Bunny being the one who ultimately saves Alice after she is thrust back into the simulation. The original ending is a good one-two-three punch of a finale: one being learning about the simulation, two being placed back in the simulation under the guise she really was crazy, and three being one of the other women in the simulation listening to her cries for help earlier in the film and acting on them. It’s night and day compared to us basically learning the twist, then sitting with it and having a ton of questions in the fallout of the finale, all on top of whether there really were big tensions on the Don't Worry Darling set. 

While some of the same beats are hit in the Don’t Worry Darling, the original script involved more attention to the twist after most of the movie had alluded to one without much focus placed on making it a satisfying ending. As CinemaBlend’s own review of Don’t Worry Darling suggested, it “drags far more than any thriller should,” which then makes the ending suffer when it doesn’t do enough to quench the thirst of solving the mystery we sat with for way too long. 

In the original finale, it’s more fleshed out and there’s a lot more story on the other side of learning Victory is part of a simulation. Most importantly, Florence Pugh’s character and many others have more things to do and have more depth to them than 1950s dress-up. 

This weekend was a big one for moviegoers, as it welcomed a new release that the public has been chattering about for weeks: Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling. And Don’t Worry Darling drama rumors swirled that Harry Styles and Wilde had split after Don’t Worry Darling’s premiere, they started packing on the PDA.

Now they’ve been photographed smooching in NYC, so it looks like the celebrity couple is still going strong.

It looks like the rumors about Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde splitting were without merit. This isn’t the first time that the One Direction alum has been the subject of chatter related to Don’t Worry Darling. At the Venice premiere, the internet was set ablaze with rumors that Styles spit in the lap of Chris Pine. The talks were so deafening that both actors actually addressed the situation. Wilde even denied that spitgate ever happened while promoting the movie on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

This is just the latest example of a Don’t Worry Darling rumor being squashed. After rumors about Olivia Wilde having screaming matches with Florence Pugh on set circulated, dozens of crew members from the thriller signed a statement refuting these reports. While that puts the kibosh on the screaming match chatter, it just shows how many stories are currently circulating around the project. Although that might have helped Olivia Wilde’s sophomore directorial effort win more money at the box office last weekend.

Perhaps the most popular Don’t Worry Darling rumor is about Florence Pugh and Olivia Wilde’s reported feud. The Black Widow star was noticeably absent from press for the movie, as she’s filming the Dune sequel. Wilde’s personal life has also been on display, especially after her ex Jason Sudeikis served her with custody papers while she was presenting the movie at this year’s CinemaCon.

At this point, much has been said about Don’t Worry Darling, the new psychological thriller from actor/director Olivia Wilde. The film’s promotion and recent release have arguably been overshadowed by reports of an alleged feud between Wilde and lead star Florence Pugh and drama on the set. (And let’s not even get into the saga that was Harry Styles and Chris Pine’s “spitgate.”) Amid all of this though, actress KiKi Layne has stepped forward and opened up about most of her scenes being “cut” from the movie. However, the star still says that she won in one specific area. 

In the movie, KiKi Layne plays the role of Margaret, a friend of Florence Pugh’s Alice. Layne’s character is established as a bit of an outcast amongst the other housewives in the neighborhood, which sets her on an interesting path. Based on Layne’s recent Instagram post, there was more to her story, yet that wasn’t present in the finished film. Despite that, the upcoming-and-coming actress chalks up Don’t Worry Darling as a W, because she’s found love. Check it out: 

It would seem that the Old Guard star has started a relationship with Ari'el Stachel, who played her character’s husband, Ted, in the movie. The photos of the two are definitely sweet, but I think most people may really get a kick out of the hashtags included in the post. Based on #GotMyCheck and #GotMyMan, the 30-year-old actress isn’t dwelling on what could’ve been, and that’s perfectly encapsulated in her third hashtag – #EverythingHappensforaReason. Stachel also commented on the post, adding some lovely sentiments for his lady:

The pair’s co-star, Gemma Chan, also reacted to the post by dropping in a single heart emoji. It’s honestly great to see that something so sweet came out of the film’s production. I think it’s fair to say that this is one of the more feel-good stories that’s been connected to filming. 

Over the past month, there’s been speculation regarding whether Shia LaBeouf was actually fired from the movie, as he and Olivia Wilde have shared different stories. A subsequently leaked video, in which Wilde referred to Florence Pugh as “Miss Flo,” made headlines as well. Sometime later, Pugh limited her press availability while promoting the movie. It was also recently reported that the two got into a “screaming match” on set, though dozens of crew members shot down that claim. While Wilde has denied the feud rumors, Pugh has not spoken on the matter, though she did share a heartfelt message upon the movie’s release. 

It looks like KiKi Layne and Ari'el Stachel are staying far away from any kind of Don't Worry Darling drama, though. At present, they simply seem to be enjoying each other’s company – and the money they received for making the movie.

They say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, and Olivia Wilde’s sophomore effort -- Don’t Worry Darling -- might be proof of that. As behind-the-scenes drama and rumors of feuds overshadowed the movie itself, the psychological thriller still handily won the weekend domestic box office, pulling in $19.2 million. About 40 members of the Don’t Worry Darling crew released a statement to dispute Florence Pugh and Wilde’s rumored “screaming match,” and there was also that whole “Did Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine?” situation. But whether it was the drama on screen or off screen that piqued moviegoers’ attention, there were butts in the seats this weekend.

Audiences also saw Avatar return to theaters, and some second- and third-week films were hanging in there. So take a look at the full Top 10 chart, and then we’ll break it all down. 

While director and star Olivia Wilde didn’t seem pleased that feud rumors were dominating her movie's headlines when she broke her silence on the spitting incident, it could be argued that they actually helped the movie overcome critics’ tepid reactions. CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg called Don’t Worry Darling “a mystery missing momentum,” and the movie maintains a less-than-ideal B- on CinemaScore. Critics rated it at just 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the overall audience score was much more forgiving, with more than 500 reviews averaging for a score of 80% fresh. 

Also of note are the movie’s international numbers, as it earned another $10.8 million for a global total of $30 million in its debut, per The Numbers. Considering the film’s reported $35 million budget, that certainly goes in the “win” column. Now, we’ll have to see if it’s got legs in the theaters.  

Avatar Makes A Big Return To The Big Screen

Ahead of the long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water, which is set for a December 16 release marked with high box office expectations for the Disney movie, the mega company has removed the 2009 original from its streaming service. Viewers will instead have to visit the theater if they want a refresher on the events of the first movie, as Avatar was re-released this weekend. Apparently, a good number of people were game, with the movie pulling in $10 million over the Friday-through-Sunday period to bring its overall domestic earnings to $770.5 million. 

Domestically, Avatar is the fourth-highest grossing movie of all time (behind Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Endgame and Star Wars: The Force Awakens). It also firmly stands atop the worldwide box office winners, now with $2.86 billion. 

The Woman King Drops Just 42% In Second Week 

Falling from its No. 1 spot this week — but still beating out the returning Avatar — is The Woman King starring Viola Davis. The historical epic rode its Toronto International Film Festival buzz to an opening weekend win at the box office and claimed silver in its second week with an additional $11.1 million. That’s just a 42% drop, as it now holds a domestic gross of $36.3 million.

In its third week, the horror movie Barbarian dug its nails in for another $4.8 million, as second-week films Pearl and See How They Run each added just under $2 million. Their earnings fell just 39% and 37%, respectively, but each movie was shown in more theaters than during their premiere weeks. With the former's budget of just $1 million, this is still a win for A24. 

Nearing the end of their runs in the Top 10 might be Top Gun: Maverick and Minions: The Rise of Gru, with the sequels claiming the bottom two spots this week after impressive 18- and 13-week runs, respectively. But, as my daughter pointed out, Minions don't die, and I wouldn't bet against Tom Cruise either. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Bullet Train Nears Big Domestic Milestone 

After its eighth weekend in theaters, the Brad Pitt ensemble Bullet Train remains securely in the middle of the top 10, and it’s possibly just a week away from crossing the $100 million mark in domestic gross. With $99.3 million total, including the $1.8 million it picked up this weekend, the action-comedy better work fast, as it continues to be shown in fewer theaters around the country. This week it played on nearly 700 fewer screens than the week before. 

We've definitely got some things to keep an eye on in ticket sales over the next week. Will Don't Worry Darling lose the momentum it gained from pre-release press, or will word-of-mouth advertising push more people to witness the cast's chemistry for themselves? The highly anticipated and heavily promoted Bros is set to hit theaters on September 30 (and early reactions are seeing critics praising the queer rom-com), alongside the ridiculously creepy-looking Smile. With such low numbers in the Top 10, I'd definitely expect those to disrupt some of these rankings.

Olivia Wilde’s latest cinematic venture, Don’t Worry Darling, has finally been released after much anticipation. But as the psychological thriller hits theaters, a plethora of rumors and controversies continue to swirl around it. The past few weeks have been filled with reports of a supposed cast firing and alleged disagreements on set. To the latter point, an anonymous source recently claimed that Wilde got into a “shouting match” with her lead actress, Florence Pugh. With this, dozens of crew members have shared a statement that addresses the supposed confrontation. 

The reported screaming match (the latest development development in the Don't Worry Darling drama) was the culmination of Florence Pugh’s apparent frustration with Olivia Wilde’s conduct on set. The unnamed person alleged that Pugh took issue with Wilde frequently disappearing from set with boyfriend Harry Styles, who co-leads the film. It was also said that Pugh was reportedly not pleased when Wilde and Styles attended a wedding, after the former had apparently spoken about the importance of following COVID protocols sometime earlier. 

All of this, however, was disputed by forty crew members via a statement sent to ET (via People). While the message was signed off by so many, it was producer Miri Yoon who actually penned the address. Yoon vehemently shot down the “absurd gossip” that’s been floating around while also sharing positive thoughts on how the director ran the set:

This wouldn’t be the first time that a Don’t Worry Darling crew member has responded to rumors. Cinematographer Matthew Libatique addressed the claims of drama, saying that the set was the most “harmonious” that he’s ever worked on. Libatique says he was “never witness to anything” and “didn’t feel anything” and that if something did happen,” it happened way after [he] left and started doing something else.” He expressed pride in the film as did Miri Yoon and the crew members did later in their own statement:

The drama surrounding the film started in earnest last month when Shia LaBeouf, who was originally set to play Harry Styles’ role, refuted Olivia Wilde’s claim that he was fired from the production. (He also provided text messages and emails to back up his claim.) Around that time, a video went live which showed Wilde trying to convince LaBeouf to rejoin the film and saying that it would be a “wake-up call” for “Miss Flo,” who allegedly had problems with LaBeouf. From there, rumors spread that Wilde and Florence Pugh were feuding and that only intensified when the actress limited her press availability. 

Olivia Wilde has since denied that she and Florence Pugh hold any kind of animosity towards each other. Pugh hasn’t addressed the situation directly, though she did share a heartfelt message and behind-the-scenes photos to celebrate the movie’s release this weekend. 

We’ll likely never know exactly what went down on the set, truth be told. But one thing we’ll eventually find out is whether this drama has a negative impact on the movie’s success. Regardless of how it performs though, it’s clear that the Don’t Worry Darling team is going to stand firmly by their film.

Why face the alleged music when you can dance to “Music For a Sushi Restaurant” instead? As Harry Styles finished out his 15-night residency at Madison Square Garden, his Don’t Worry Darling director and reported girlfriend, Olivia Wilde, was dancing in the crowd. And let me tell you, it looked like she was having the time of her life. 

To put it lightly, the cast and creatives behind the movie have had a lot to worry about. There has been lots and a lot of Don't Worry Darling drama swirling around Olivia Wilde, and the film's stars Florence Pugh and Harry Styles in the months leading up to the film’s release. Now that the movie is out and press tours are coming to a close, it seems like the drama is slowing down a bit. Whether the rumors are true or not, it seems like Wilde got to celebrate her sophomore film and dance it out to “Music For a Sushi Restaurant,” the first track from Styles’ sophomore album, Harry’s House. This dance break comes a few days after the director appeared on Stephen Colbert’s talk show. While chatting with Colbert she denied the rumored feud between her and Florence Pugh, and she spoke about the alleged spit-gate from the Venice Film Festival (which Wilde, Chris Pine and Harry Styles have all said did not happen.) Colbert’s show films in New York City, not far from Madison Square Garden, so it makes sense that the Booksmart director would take a break from work to go see her apparent boyfriend, and one of the biggest pop stars in the world, perform while they're in the same city. 

The stories and rumors flying around the Internet provide lots of different narratives as to what working on the set of Don’t Worry Darling was like. Yesterday, after Olivia Wilde denied any and all drama, a newly surfaced rumor alleged that Florence Pugh and Wilde got into a screaming match. This allegation came from an anonymous person who claims to have seen it happen. They also said the drama went all the way up to executives at Warner Bros. However, on the flip side, the film’s cinematographer addressed the rumored drama, saying Wilde’s set was one of the most “harmonious” productions he’d worked on. 

The film has been one of the most talked about 2022 movie releases, especially considering the amount of alleged drama that has cropped up over the last few months. However, in the last week, both the director and Florence Pugh have both talked about the movie in a positive light -- the former on late-night talk shows and the latter through a heartfelt post on Instagram. 

Whatever the drama might be, the movie is in the hands of the viewers now. With reviews for Don't Worry Darling praising Pugh’s performance but bringing in fairly tepid reactions, it will be interesting to see how general audiences react. If you liked these photos, good news, because Pugh ended her post saying that there’s “more to come!” More importantly though, she also made sure to shout out the many people who joined forces to make Don’t Worry Darling a reality.

Florence Pugh’s social media post followed just a few hours after it was reported that her and Olivia Wilde’s long-rumored feud began in January 2021, roughly three-fourths into Don’t Worry Darling’s principal photography, when she became frustrated that Wilde and co-star Harry Styles kept disappearing from set. The actor and director had started getting romantically involved, as Wilde’s relationship with Jason Sudeikis ended in November 2020. Then things reportedly escalated when Pugh and Wilde got into a “screaming match,” and from there, Warner Bros. chairman Toby Emmerich intervened to mediate a “long negotiation process” to ensure that Pugh would stay involved with Don’t Worry Darling and not do anything to harm its box office chances. Earlier this week, Wilde denied that she and Pugh are feuding.

Other drama surrounding Don’t Worry Darling includes Florence Pugh reportedly being paid much less than Harry Styles despite their shared co-lead statuses, the circumstances surrounding Shia LaBeouf’s exit from the role Styles took over, and Styles appearing to have spit on Chris Pine during the TIFF screening, which Wilde also debunked. As far as the movie itself goes, Don’t Worry Darling has earned mixed critical reception, with CinemaBlend’s own Eric Eisenberg rating it just 2 out of 5 stars in his review.

Following what seems like years of delays brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and a whirlwind of coverage surrounding the reported Don't Worry Darling drama, Olivia Wilde’s new thriller is finally out in theaters, giving audiences an opportunity to tune out the noise and see what the movie is all about for themselves. In her sophomore directorial effort — she made her debut with 2019’s Booksmart — the actress-turned-director explores a mysterious utopian community in the middle of the desert through the eyes of Florence Pugh’s ‘50s housewife Alice Chambers.

The movie, which features a shocking twist ending, offers some explanation for what happens in the first two-thirds of the story, but also leaves you asking even more questions the more you think about it. So, what happens during the Don’t Worry Darling ending? Let’s break that down now before diving into some of those burning questions...

What Happens At The End Of Don’t Worry Darling

Throughout much of Don’t Worry Darling’s runtime, it’s clear that something is going on in Victory, California that is being withheld from Alice Chambers (Florence Pugh) and her friends Bunny (Olivia Wilde), Peg (Kate Berlant), and Violet (Sydney Chandler), but the truth isn’t fully divulged until the final act. After experiencing a mental breakdown after a series of strange events — spotting a plane crash but finding no wreckage, stumbling across a mysterious structure in the desert, the suicide of her former best friend Margaret (KiKi Layne) — Alice is forced to undergo shock therapy. 

This procedure is intended to reset her memories, but it has the opposite effect in that it helps Alice come to the realization the Victory Project isn’t a secretive energy project dealing with “progressive materials” but instead a computer simulation where men can essentially trap their wives in a virtual recreation of 1950s America.

Upon returning to her husband Jack (Harry Styles), Alice attempts to escape the captivity and return to the mysterious structure shown in the movie's various trailers on YouTube. But this isn’t before Jack tries to subdue her, which results in Alice smashing him over the head with a whiskey glass, killing him. With sirens blaring in the background and a small army of Victory Project guards in red jumpsuits descending upon her, Alice flees and escapes the simulation. The film ends with Alice’s memories from the simulation being wiped away while a scene of her dancing in the real (modern) world plays out before the credits roll.

The Victory Project Was Just A Simulation

There were a lot of reasons to be excited about Don’t Worry Darling ahead of the film’s release, and one those was the mystery surrounding the story and the possibility of some kind of twist ending. And Olivia Wilde doesn’t disappoint with her reveal that the Victory Project is a virtual prison where men are in charge and women fall into the roles of ‘50s housewives. 

And it’s not like the Don’t Worry Darling ending comes out of left field, as Wilde and screenwriter Katie Silberman leave little hints and breadcrumbs to the big reveal along the way. First, there is the scene where Alice cracks open a carton of eggs for breakfast only for the shells to be empty (a glitch in the system). Then, there is the explosive dinner scene where Alice points out to her friends that they all were from Chicago, Baltimore, or Philadelphia, and all met their husbands a similar way (on a train).

A scene near the end confirms all of this when the audience witnesses a flashback to Alice and Jack in the real world, one where Alice is a dedicated surgeon and Jack is an out-of-work loner who finds a way to spend more time with his spouse. But there are still a lot of questions the movie doesn't answer...

What Was Frank’s Rationale Behind The Victory Project? 

One of the most menacing figures on the Don’t Worry Darling cast is Chris Pine’s Frank, the elusive founder of the Victory Project. And while his character often teases the purpose behind the project (both in and out of the simulation), he never fully offers an explanation for his rationale behind the happenings.

We’re led to believe Frank’s goal is to create a world in which men are in control of essentially every aspect of life and have subservient women back home who have dinner, drinks, and passionate sex waiting for them at home. It’s alluded to in the podcast that the real-world Jack listens to in the flashback and slightly addressed in the ring ceremony scene at the big party, but Frank is killed by his wife Shelley (Gemma Chan) before it’s explicitly revealed.

How Long Has The Victory Project Simulation Been Going On?

Another question not answered by the end of Don’t Worry Darling relates to the simulation itself, specifically regarding its duration. How long has Frank kept the Victory Project up and running and how long have some of its inhabitants been there? Months, years, decades? It’s never explicitly revealed.

Obviously, some time has passed since Alice, Bunny, and the other wives first entered the simulation, considering the story of Margaret having a slow downward spiral preceding the mysterious disappearance of her son. And Bunny seems to imply she’s also been there there for quite a while when she reveals to Alice that she knows it’s a simulation, but one where her children are still alive.

What Happens Next For Alice And Shelley

In the final minutes of Don’t Worry Darling Alice and Shelley both kill their husbands in rather brutal ways — Alice slamming the glass over Jack’s head, Shelley stabbing Frank in the chest and twisting the knife — which leads to another question: what happens to them next? 

Alice presumably wakes next to her husband’s corpse after escaping the simulation (if you die in the Victory Project you die in real life), which will undoubtedly cause some complications as she readjusts to the real world. And taking away the whole “dead man in my bed” situation, what kind of state will Alice be in mentally and emotionally following such intense trauma?

And the same goes for Shelley. Will she put an end to the Victory Project simulation now that Frank is no longer there to run things, or will she pick up where he left off and keep the simulation going? All of these questions are open to interpretation. 

What Was The Deal With The Airplane Crash?

One mystery that will surely boggle the minds of those coming out of Don’t Worry Darling is the plane crash that Alice witnesses while on the Victory shuttle partway through the movie. This ultimately leads to her finding the mysterious structure on top of a mountain in the desert surrounding the town, but the plane, its wreckage, and meaning are never brought up again.

Was this another glitch in the system, some part of Alice’s real world breaking into the simulation, or just a red herring thrown in to distract the audience (like those daily explosions) for a moment? 

Overall, Olivia Wilde does a great job of tying the bow on part of the story during the Don't Worry Darling ending, but while also leaving some big unanswered questions. However, if that's what it takes to keep audiences talking about one of the most anticipated fall movies, then so be it. Don’t Worry Darling is currently playing in theaters nationwide along with some other promising 2022 movies.
