The fifth season of The Resident has been packed with change from beginning to nearly the very end so far, and the upcoming finale will deliver something that fans have been waiting a long time for: the return of Emily VanCamp as Nic. VanCamp’s departure was announced over the summer before Season 5, and the show found some powerful ways to handle the goodbye to Nic while she was off-screen, but her return for flashbacks can serve an important purpose for Conrad. Co-showrunner Andrew Chapman previewed what’s on the way, and the chemistry between VanCamp and Matt Czuchry that's still "electric."

Conrad has been moving forward as much as possible following the time jump after his wife’s death, but he openly admitted to Billie that “it always comes back to Nic” when he tries to move on, and the walls go up. Their conversation set up Emily VanCamp’s finale return, which will involve a flashback to a night for Conrad and Nic after Gigi was born. Fans will have to wait until the episode on May 17 to see exactly how that goes down, but co-showrunner Andrew Chapman shared with CinemaBlend why he thinks fans will love what happens: 

The Resident managed to incorporate Nic in many ways during the fifth season, ranging from Emily VanCamp’s voice cameo early on to Matt Czuchry’s performance over Nic’s hospital bed to Conrad and Gigi meeting the woman who received Nic’s heart, but the actress returning for some flashbacks could deliver the closure that some fans may have been missing. The time jump did part of the job on closing the door on the grief; the flashbacks could do the rest. Andrew Chapman continued:

Considering that Emily VanCamp’s last on-screen appearance as Nic was the Season 4 finale after she and Conrad returned home with baby Gigi, it’s only fitting that she gets her flashback farewell in the Season 5 finale. The timing was fortunate that VanCamp was able to make it work, and based on what Andrew Chapman had to say about her return, the chemistry between her and Matt Czuchry was as strong as ever in her guest star return. When I asked what it was like to see the two longtime co-stars back together again, he shared:

Nic and Conrad aren’t going to be together forever after Emily VanCamp returns in the Season 5 finale, but fans don’t have to worry that the spark that made the relationship so unforgettable will be gone. The “electric” and “weird” chemistry that worked so well for VanCamp and Matt Czurchry didn’t fade away just because they spent a season apart. 

And Nic’s return for some flashbacks with Conrad isn’t the only exciting thing coming in the Season 5 finale, called “Neon Moon.” While Conrad considers his future – which potentially includes either newcomer Cade or friend Billie – Devon will receive an amazing career opportunity. Ian has to face a diagnosis for what went wrong, and Kit and Bell give them all something to celebrate.

The network hasn’t renewed the medical drama for Season 6 just yet, but the odds are that Conrad and Co. will be back at Chastain in the fall. The Resident started Season 5 off on a tragic note thanks to the death of Nic, but fans at least had a good idea that it was probably coming due to the already-announced departure of actress Emily VanCamp. The show very definitively killed her off, so it seemed like that was the end of the actress on the show, but now she’s returning for the Season 5 finale, and how it’s happening should get fans excited. 

Emily VanCamp will return for the Season 5 finale that airs on May 17, with co-showrunner Peter Elkoff telling TVLine that the actress will appear in “four, maybe five” flashbacks. It was pretty safe to say that The Resident wasn’t going to resurrect Nic back to the land of the living, but hallucinations or dreams were a possibility. The flashbacks will be used to help Conrad move on from his wife and look ahead to a new romance in his future. 

Conrad has dipped his toe back into the dating pool already, but not for anything serious, and the most important relationship in his life is obviously with his daughter. That likely won’t change, but opening up to a new romance could be a very good thing for a leading man whose original love interest isn’t coming back to life. Elkoff elaborated, saying:

The Season 5 finale still may be a month off, but it already sounds like a highly emotional hour of television! The co-showrunner went on to say that Emily VanCamp was “really up for the idea of coming back” and so they “built her story” around the idea of finding a way to free Conrad from his attachment to her and start a new chapter in his life. 

And reportedly, The Resident already has some candidates in mind for his next potential love interest: Billie, played by Jessica Lucas (who has had a lot to do this season), or Season 5 newcomer Cade, played by Kaley Ronayne. Conrad hasn’t seemed to seriously consider either woman as a potential romantic partner, but letting go of Nic by thinking back to the night of Gigi’s birth could change that. So which one? 

Well, with Billie, he has somebody who Gigi already loves and provides a tie back to her mom, and his relationship with Billie has only gotten stronger since Nic’s death. With Cade, he has somebody without the emotional baggage of Nic, but still with a whole lot of complications. 

Personally, I’m rooting for Billie, because he seems as good for her as she seems good for him and Gigi, and Jessica Lucas has a nice chemistry with Matt Czuchry as Conrad. Fox medical drama The Resident went all Halloween for Episode 5. Chastain was filled with costume-clad patients and even some claiming to be witches, while Bell unknowingly picked up a hitchhiker that turned out to be a serial killer on the loose. Matt Czuchry’s Conrad returned to work for the first time following Nic’s death, all while trying to make baby GiGi’s first Halloween a memorable one. What really gave the episode a jolt, however, was the surprise time jump in the final seconds, moving the story further along as a way to handle Conrad’s grief moving forward. 

At the end of the episode, fans were no doubt expecting to see GiGi either sleeping or waiting for Conrad in her crib, but were instead greeted with a now-toddler GiGi in an astronaut costume. Some, like myself, thought it was a merely flash-forward and thought we’d be back in the "present" by the next episode, but that is not the case. The Resident has indeed permanently jumped a few years into the future. It’s only been a couple of episodes since Nic’s death, but it looks like the series is pushing through the grieving and mourning process with this jump ahead. Co-showrunner Peter Elkoff explained to TVLine that it was time to move on:

Nic's death greatly impacted not only Conrad, but also Billie, Devon and everyone else at Chastain who loved the nurse practitioner. It can be assumed that all these characters' sorrow will be lessened in future episodes, but it will be interesting to see  exactly how things have changed during the time jump, and how Nic will still be included within the narrative. It’s likely we’ll be seeing a lot more of toddler GiGi and how she’s been dealing with everything, as well as how Conrad has moved on, if he has. 

Nic was his one true love and it’s hard to let that go. But this is also a primetime broadcast network drama, where romantic storylines are always a hot commodity. So don't be too shocked if someone new catches Conrad's eye before this season is finished.

New episodes of The Resident air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox! The series is off for a week for the World Series, but will be back on November 2.

Spoilers ahead for Season 5, Episode 3 of The Resident, “The Long and Winding Road.”

Fox medical drama The Resident said goodbye to one of its own in the most recent episode. In August, it was announced that series star Emily VanCamp had exited the series ahead of Season 5, with only a hint of how her character, nurse practitioner Nic Nevin, would be departing. That storyline was the main focus of the October 5 episode, however, coinciding with VanCamp breaking her silence about the decision to leave The Resident after four seasons.

The third episode of The Resident’s fifth season was emotional and heartbreaking from start to finish, as it immediately followed up on last week’s cliffhanger when cops showed up at Conrad’s door to give him the news about his wife being in a car accident. Although the doctors at Chastain did everything in their power to save their friend and colleague, it was revealed that due to the impact of the crash, Nic was left brain dead. Emily VanCamp spoke to Deadline about her exit and her time on the medical series:

News of her exit from The Resident broke just days after Emily VanCamp announced on Instagram that she had given birth to her daughter with hubby Josh Bowman, which was itself a surprise to many fans, as the actress kept her pregnancy a secret. After hearing that, it wasn’t too hard to piece together why VanCamp decided to leave, and now she’s confirming that she just wants to be with family. In her words:

Emily VanCamp’s exit on The Resident was cathartic, if sudden, and reflected the idea of close families for not only the actress, but for Nic as well. The nurse practitioner was surrounded by her friends, colleagues, husband, father and her daughter, and as she was wheeled down to surgery for organ donation, the hall was filled with Chastain staff as they remembered her. It was a beautiful and heartbreaking tribute to a wonderful character, and it shows that VanCamp and Nic, will always be part of The Resident. Hopefully she can return in flashbacks (if not a nightmarish Halloween episode) so we can still see her!

News broke nearly a full month before the fifth season premiere of The Resident that leading lady Emily VanCamp wouldn't be returning, which came as a shocker considering Season 4 ended with Nic and Matt Czuchry's Conrad married and happily settling into life with their newborn daughter. So the question heading into the premiere was: how will The Resident handle the sudden absence of Nic? And, depending on how nervous you were about her, how tragic will her departure be? "Da Da" delivered some surprising answers and clues about what comes next.

The Season 5 premiere actually opened on another domestic scene of Conrad trying to get GiGi ready to go to the hospital daycare with Nic nowhere to be seen, only for her to call and Emily VanCamp to make a surprise voice cameo. Nic was in the car on the way to a "spa retreat," according to Conrad, but already missing GiGi and ready to turn back. Conrad told her not to, that he has everything handled, and to enjoy her retreat. Honestly, if not for the news of VanCamp's departure, I wouldn't have thought anything was weird about it, but Conrad's mention of not letting Nic talk to GiGi because she was driving immediately left me concerned that a car crash was imminent.

But nope! Conrad didn't have to listen to his wife get into a deadly car crash and left the house to go to work, where he would have to deal with a ransomware attack (similar to what 9-1-1 delivered on Fox just the night before) crippling every system in the hospital. By the time he finally returned home with GG, he discovered two missed calls from Nic, followed by a text reading:

Conrad missed that text by only ten minutes, so assuming that The Resident isn't going to open Episode 2 with the reveal that Nic died in her sleep, it seems that whatever happens that Emily VanCamp will no longer be around simply hasn't happened yet. For fans who were dreading something heartbreaking happening for Nic and Conrad in the premiere, the episode ending with a sweet exchange of texts must have been a relief... but that means something sad almost certainly still has to happen, and probably soon.

Considering the episode ended with Devon collapsing due to some kind of venting chemical when he went down to a lower level to check on a patient who hadn't been discharged despite simply needing a cast, all signs point toward Episode 2 picking up where Episode 1 left off, which is confirmed by the promo for next week. And that means Nic won't have been expected to be back from her retreat yet. A preview for Season 5 indicated that Conrad is going to get some bad news, which I'm guessing comes at the end of the second episode.

The episode description doesn't actually mention Conrad or Nic at all, which may be a sign that their story is too big to be included because of spoilers. Given the situation with Emily VanCamp, that seems likely. Interestingly, VanCamp did still appear in the opening credits, and her voice cameo early on meant that she did contribute to at least one episode of Season 5. Will she get more in the season? And has The Resident come up with a reason for Nic's departure that doesn't have to be tragic?

Find out with new episodes of The Resident on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox, with a new villain on the way as well as whatever happens to Nic. The show has seemingly lost Morris Chestnut as Cain as well, since Chestnut landed a leading role in Fox's Our Kind of People and the Season 5 premiere confirmed that Cain took the job at Hopkins that was mentioned in the Season 4 finale. Still, only time will tell if he's able to recur, or just as out as Emily VanCamp.

Last month it was announced that The Resident would be losing yet another Chastain Park Memorial member, as Emily VanCamp, known as Nurse Practitioner Nic Nevin, has exited the Fox medical drama ahead of its fifth season. Not much is known about how the series will write off Nic, but Fox’s entertainment president Michael Thorn previews what the audience will have to prepare for.

Currently there is no telling just what will take VanCamp’s Nicolette Nevin away from Chastain, but fans already have their theories. Shortly before her exit was announced, Fox released a teaser for the upcoming season, which ended with VanCamp’s on-screen hubby, Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry), holding their newborn daughter, GiGi, and answering the door to police officers. An accident would be a grim way to go, especially just after giving birth, but Michael Thorn tells Deadline that the departure will be an emotional one and he reveals just how they’ll fill that void:

The news of Emily VanCamp’s exit definitely shocked fans, especially after her character gave birth last season. And, her exit isn’t the only recent one, as Morris Chestnut, who plays surgeon Barrett Cain, will be seen a lot less in Season 5 due to his upcoming role on the new Fox series, Our Kind of People. This is just after Shaunette Renée Wilson (who played Mina Okafor) departed the medical series during Season 4. However, it looks like Chastain will be getting some new doctors and / or nurses to fill the void that will definitely be felt.

It’s unknown just why VanCamp decided to exit the series, but it could be due to the fact that she, herself, just had a baby. Or could it be that she’s going to soon have a bigger part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Sharon Carter / Powerbroker, so she’s freeing herself up? Whatever the case, The Resident will not be the same without Nic Nevin, and however they close out her story will be an emotional journey, regardless. Hopefully, it’s one where the doors can be left open for her to return, because I can’t imagine how Conrad will be if anything bad happens to the love of his life. Being a single dad is likely something that never crossed his mind.

After the fourth season of The Resident ended on a finale that was surprisingly short on tragedies and cliffhangers considering its status as a medical drama, the show is losing a major star in what could be a very tragic way for her character. Emily VanCamp, who has played Nic Nevin on The Resident from the very first episode, has exited the show before the fifth season.

Emily VanCamp's departure comes ahead of Season 5, according to TVLine, which means that Season 5 will somehow have to start without Nic barring a surprise appearance to tie off loose ends, and fans will know well that the Season 4 finale definitely didn't set up VanCamp leaving. News of her exit comes as a particularly big surprise considering the events of Season 4 leading up the finale, which gave no indication that Conrad and Nic were in for anything other than a future raising their daughter together.

It was particularly uplifting after their wedding came on the heels of the pandemic ending (in the universe of The Resident), and nice to have a season end on a note that wasn't especially stressful. Heck, the biggest cliffhanger was pretty much the question of how much Morris Chestnut would be able to appear in Season 5, considering his new commitment to another Fox show. So, how will The Resident write out Emily VanCamp's Nic, and what does it mean for Conrad?

Probably nothing good! Based on a new promo for the upcoming fifth season, it's not looking like The Resident is going to say goodbye to Nic by Conrad explaining that she's on a sabbatical or took a trip to another hospital or quit the hospital and is conveniently off screen whenever anybody drops by to visit. Take a look:

Even without the news of Emily VanCamp's departure, the absence of any clearly new footage of Nic might have been enough to get fans asking questions. Then there's the shot of just Conrad standing over their daughter's crib, with the baby already standing. Then, most foreboding of all, the final shot shows a pair of somber-looking police officers knocking on the door, where a very serious-looking Conrad opens the door with his daughter in his arms.

It certainly appears that Conrad is in for a tragedy, and he might want to call up Max over on New Amsterdam for some advice about working at a busy hospital after losing a spouse, if the worst show happen to Nic! ! At the time of writing, Emily VanCamp hasn't announced her reason for departing the series, but her big return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was very open-ended, and it's not hard to imagine the MCU taking her out of the Fox series. Plus, VanVamp recently gave birth to a daughter in real life.

Find out how The Resident says goodbye to Nic with the Season 5 premiere on Tuesday, September 21 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox, followed by Morris Chestnut's new show. A big new villain is on the way to Season 5, but the description doesn't indicate that the new baddie is the kind who would have anything to do with something happening to Nick.

Sharon Carter and Steve Roger’s kiss in Captain America: Civil War still has some Marvel fans riled up and, since coming back to the MCU, Emily VanCamp has constantly been asked about the topic. With this, she's now giving us more of an idea about her thoughts on the kiss and, in a more recent interview, the actress revealed her complicated feelings about the divisive Civil War moment.

No matter how many years removed she is from it, Emily VanCamp must still deal with the effects of that kiss. It's a polarizing moment, to the say the least, but VanCamp has managed to navigate the noise with class and understanding. When talking about the controversial kiss, the MCU star had this to say about her feelings in the moment:

It was understandable for the MCU star to have some trepidation over a potential Captain America-Sharon Carter romance. Given how Marvel fans' response to the tender moment, Emily VanCamp’s intuition was correct. Nevertheless, you have to appreciate that VanCamp is gracious, whenever she's asked about the scene.

During her recent Collider interview, Emily VanCamp addressed Sharon Carter and Steve Rogers’s possible romance fizzling out before it started. This came as a surprise, as the Civil War moment led many to believe more would happen between the two. VanCamp said to the site:

As the actress stated, the kiss turned out to be a sweet moment, and Emily VanCamp doesn't blame anyone for the scene panning out the way many assumed it would. Ultimately, for the MCU fandom, Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter were always meant to be together, so many were mostly were mostly pleased when the two finally ended up together in the closing moments of 2019's Avengers: Endgame.

Overall, it would seem that Emily VanCamp is fine with how things have panned out for Sharon Carter. As the actress pointed out, that moment did help lead to the character's altered characterization in Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. That show gave fans a very different version of the character and, by the finale, Carter solidified herself as a frenemy (foe?) within the MCU.

Right now, it’s up in the air regarding the direction Sharon Carter is headed. But based on how Marvel Studios has surprised fans before, I’m sure it has big plans for Emily VanCamp and Sharon Carter moving forward. Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has been a relatively straightforward story and hasn’t spurred quite as many fan theories as its predecessor, WandaVision. However, there are a couple of plot threads that are still keeping fans wondering. The biggest arguably revolves around the identity of the mysterious Power Broker. Many have been theorizing that Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter is actually the frequently-mentioned figure. Ahead of the finale, this indeed seems to be the case, and a new theory has actually captured the attention of fans and Kevin Smith.

The most recent episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier saw Sharon Carter make a call to mercenary Georges Batroc and offer him a new job. While it’s a pretty standard scene on the surface, some fans believe that Carter’s phone may indeed reveal that she’s the Power Broker.

Fans noticed that Sharon Carter is not seen using an iPhone, which is a pretty common device for film and TV characters. Now, while this may not seem like a big deal to some, this is significant due to the reported rule Apple has in regard to the cellular device. Knives Out director Rian Johnson revealed that Apple prohibits villains from using their phones on camera. With this, many now believe that Carter’s non-use of an iPhone confirms she’s the Power Broker. The theory has been picking up momentum, with Kevin Smith even making note of it while talking with Marc Bernardin on their Batman Beyond podcast:

The theory may sound a bit weird, but it’s definitely not that far-fetched when you consider how often iPhones are used on TV and film. Kevin Smith’s bought into theories before, some wilder than others, but some of them have held some merit.

Phone theory aside, it seems all too likely that Sharon Carter will be revealed as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Power Broker during the finale. Not only has Sharon become a lot shadier during her time on Madripoor, but she’s also become well-connected. The fact that she has the pull to recruit someone like Batroc shows that she has the influence that’s expected from someone like the Power Broker. If all goes as expected, Sharon Carter will officially gain the title of Power Broker, though that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s aiming to harm Sam Wilson or Bucky Barnes. There’s no telling how things might play out, but it’s certainly clear that viewers, including Kevin Smith, are in for an explosive ending.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is full of super-powered beings that have saved the day on multiple occasions, but the expansive franchise also includes plenty of non-powered heroes who’ve done their fair share of avenging as well. Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter is one such individual, having come through in the clutch several times. But despite the fact that Carter is formidable, you have to wonder how VanCamp feels about her lack of powers. Well, the actress has now provided some thoughts on the matter.

Having played the role of Sharon Carter (formerly Agent 13) for over seven years now, Emily VanCamp is pretty well in tune with her character’s strengths and weaknesses. Just recently, she opened up about playing a powerless character in a world full of imposing superheroes:

So all in all, Emily VanCamp seems to be fine with the fact that Sharon Carter doesn’t have superhuman abilities of her own. There are, however, still some drawbacks to this, specifically the fight sequences VanCamp mentioned. During her recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she further explained the physical challenges of playing her grounded character:

Anyone who’s seen Disney+'s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier knows Emily VanCamp had to put in work when it came to hand-to-hand combat. The fight sequences may look great on screen, but it takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears to pull them off. Still, it’s nice to hear the actress mostly enjoys the experience.

Sharon Carter has had an intriguing arc in the MCU in the years since her debut in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The great-niece of Peggy Carter, Sharon was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent tasked with watching Steve Rogers. After the fall of the spy organization, she joined the CIA but would lose her position after aiding Steve Rogers’ faction of Avengers during the superhero civil war.

After having spent years on the run, we’ve now learned through The Falcon and the Winter Soldier that Sharon is living in the criminal sanctuary of Madripoor and dealing in illegal art trading. This Sharon is definitely shadier, and all signs point to her being the mysterious Power Broker.

For someone with no actual superpowers, Sharon Carter has certainly carved out a unique place for herself within the MCU. There’s no telling what the future holds for her but, if she survives, you can bet she’ll continue to call shots and get her knuckles bloodied when needed.

Fair enough. Sharon Carter is simply trying to survive in the criminal world of Madripoor. She's managed to make her life in the lawless setting, and has definitely changed as a person. And for that reason it seems that Emily VanCamp and her character aren't really looking back toward Avengers: Endgame.

Emily VanCamp's comments to EW show what it's really like working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the rabid fandom has endless questions about the behemoth property, not even the cast has all the answers. This seemingly true regarding Sharon's reaction to Captain America's happy ending, at least for now.

While it doesn't look like Emily VanCamp has an official verdict on Sharon's feelings about Steve Rogers, the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame continue to play a major role in the projects that have followed. The snap, blip and five-year time jump has sent shock waves through the universe, and Sharon Carter is one of the many characters trying to live in the chaos.

It should be interesting to see what comes next for Sharon Carter, and if she ends up returning to the silver screen in Phase Four or Five. Putting the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent back in the action would perhaps allow for her to finally address that kiss with Captain America, and how she might feel about him disappearing and leaving her a fugitive. Only time will tell.

General spoilers below for the first four episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, so be warned!

As a TV show so expensive that even Marvel capped its run at only six episodes, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was expected to bring all of that moolah to the screen through big stunts, big effects and big MCU star power. And the Disney+ series absolutely delivers for the most part, though some viewers' mileage may vary for how well the show balances its eye-candy sequences with everything else. Still, the high-flying action and crunchy brawls aren't even where the MCU drama shines the most in my eyes.

For my money, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's most perfect aspect is the idea that was already built into the concept from the start: the standalone series is a showcase for intriguing and under-utilized MCU characters to further develop their personalities and quirks in ways that theatrical runtimes can't allow for. That goes just as much for Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson and Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes as all of the non-titular characters so let's start off with those gents.

Sam And Bucky Get To Work Out Real Feelings

I'm not going to sit here and argue that Sam's Falcon and Bucky's Winter Soldier haven't been major characters in the MCU thus far, especially considering Sebastian Stan's war veteran was previously name-checked in Captain America's first sequel title. But I'll definitely argue that both Sam and Bucky have more than enough comic history to serve as basis for several seasons of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier outside of Cap's looming shadow (on top of any original stories yet to be crafted). Not to mention both Stan and Anthony Mackie have absolutely earned the chance to bring more Falcon and Winter Soldier tales to audiences, both respectively and as a duo.

It's probably safe to say that both characters already deserved more of the spotlight prior to the events of Avengers: Endgame, but Phase 4 is the ideal time for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to exist so that it can pack the biggest emotional and psychological punch for both Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes. Both heroes are finding ways to live in and cope with a world without Steve Rogers and constant Avengers-level missions, much like the show's creative team had to find ways to make those very things happen while writing. And all while dealing with new and unfamiliar threats. Fortunately, 270+ minutes of TV airtime allows for more nuance, depth and levity than even a trio of Marvel movies can usually deliver for supporting characters.

Rather than falling into one extreme (keeping Sam and Bucky apart for most of the season) or the other (inexplicably making them BFFs immediately), The Falcon and the Winter Soldier took a necessary two steps back to address both characters' personal issues without just sweeping them away to embrace the camaraderie. Not only the two men's machismo-infused personal issues with each other, which admittedly make for some of the show's more humorous moments, but also their shared dislike for John Walker's now-spoiled Captain America as the status quo, as well as mutually exclusive problems. From Sam's bank problems regarding his sister to Bucky traversing PTSD amidst a somewhat calmer life, both characters' lives are ripe for exploring in areas that have nothing to do with super-heroics.

Daniel Brühl's Zemo And Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter Have Invested Arcs

My only real complaint about previous appearances from Daniel Brühl's Zemo and Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter is that they were too fleeting, challenging the actors to bring memorable performances to such heavily plot-centric roles. Both actors succeeded, obviously, but The Falcon and the Winter Soldier feels like more of a true payoff for their work in the Captain America sequels, even as Sharon's presence is still being cloaked in mystery. Still, that mystery is an integral part of the development process.

Not that watching Sharon's scenes through the first four episodes haven't already been worthy. By the end of her first minute back in front of audiences, Emily VanCamp's former government agent proved she was not the same person (metaphorically speaking) that we saw in Captain America: Civil War. As an enemy of the state, Sharon has clearly done well for herself in the underbelly of Madripoor's crime scene, and theories abound concerning her connection to Power Broker and other antagonistic characters. So even though the character's arc is still embedded in mystery, she has already proven to be a more established character now, and I for one enjoy Sharon's morally dubious and completely understandable turn away from the Steve Rogers road to patriotism.

Which brings us to Daniel Brühl, who may have already stolen this entire show for me, based almost entirely on his work during the episode "Power Broker," though the fun definitely didn't die down in "The Whole World Is Watching." Brühl had already turned Zemo into a top-tier MCU villain during Captain America: Civil War, but I think few would argue that he had enough time in the spotlight. That was thankfully remedied in full during The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where Zemo has already gifted the world with a variety of GIF-worthy moments, while also reaffirming himself as a charming, hilarious and brilliant villain, even when he's working with (or for) the good guys. Zemo dance party time!

Karli's Flag Smasher And John Walker's Captain America Maintain A Heroic And Villainous Balance

Considering The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's two main characters are a well-respected Avenger and a hero-turned-villain-turned-hero, it makes a measurable amount of sense that the two characters' biggest obstacles are a sympathetic anarchist in Erin Kellyman's Karli Morgenthau and a loathsome "hero" in Wyatt Russell's John Walker. Those dichotomous ideas sound well enough on paper, but I'm consistently impressed by how well showrunner Malcolm Spellman & Co. embraced the duality imbued in both of those characters.

As the namesake leader of the Flag Smashers, Karli knows suffering like the back of her mask, and she has presented a variety of arguably justifiable reasons for not being the most patriotic American these days. Granted, her actions themselves, especially the more destructive and deadly ones, are definitely not as easy to side with. But it's also made obvious that Karli feels some regrets and remorse for her actions, even though she wouldn't reverse them, such is her dedication to the anti-Global Repatriation Council cause. The point is, the Flag Smasher is every bit as much as a human being as she is a villain, which is certainly not always the case with MCU big bads.

Then there's John Walker, a military hero whose ascent to the Captain America mantle is rather hard to grasp in full, considering he is the polar opposite of Chris Evans' Steve Rogers in almost every way. (Which is possibly the point, from the perspective of those who sponsored said ascent.) Therein lies the character's narrative strength, with Walker's Cap standing far apart from the MCU's marquee heroes, and the presence of super-soldier serum in his system has already brought the government-backed hero to a bloody point of no return. Regardless of how much one may not enjoy watching John Walker's narcissism in action, it shouldn't dull any appreciation for Kevin Feige actually allowing Captain America to go down such dark paths in live-action. And on Disney+, no less!

Beyond all the enjoyable and celebratory elements that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has given TV viewers to this point in its first (and possibly only) season, I hope everyone reading this can agree that its deep exploration of the Captain America film franchise's supporting characters is where the show shines the brightest. And those moments, more than the stunts and the fight scenes, are why I continue tuning in early AF every Friday morning on Disney+ when new episodes debut.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is three episodes into its tale of a gang of super soldiers who are trying to take the world back to when the blip was in full effect, and the action-packed show has already given fans some cool surprises. While we knew Sharon Carter would be along for the ride to help out Sam and Bucky, one of those surprises has been her less than positive attitude when she finally showed up in the most recent episode. Sharon was so different from her usual self, that many fans have begun to theorize that she might actually be mysterious Power Broker who's causing all this trouble. Now, star Emily VanCamp has responded to those Sharon Carter / Power Broker theories.

Emily VanCamp hasn't had much time to shine on screen as former S.H.I.E.L.D. and CIA agent Sharon Carter, but MCU-loving audiences still knew the character as a forthright, very hopeful and always well-meaning woman who followed her heart in trying to do the right thing. The Sharon who has shown up on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, however, seems a lot more likely to shoot first and ask questions later, which is only one of the reasons why fans think she's the villainous Power Broker. When asked by Variety what she'd tell people who believe they saw signs pointing toward Sharon as the Big Bad, VanCamp said:

Alright, Emily VanCamp, we see what's going on here. For every one Marvel star who's capable of slipping up and spilling the beans when a direct, spoilery question is asked, there are roughly 30 more who know exactly how to keep their lips sealed, and, clearly, VanCamp is one of those. And, she's right, the Power Broker could be anyone at this point. But, I have to admit, the idea that Sharon is behind the super soldiers and a lot of other misdeeds was the first thing that came to my mind as Episode 3 ended.

I mean, this would make for a compelling villain origin story, right? It's already obvious that Sharon is no longer the idealist we once saw, as she had to go on the run after helping Cap out in Civil War. My big question would be how and when she managed to establish herself in Madripoor as a wealthy and connected dealer in stolen art, which is how Sam and Bucky (and Zemo) find her when they meet up with Sharon again.

Sharon was said to have been snapped away like billions of other souls, which would mean that she's only just recently returned. But, from her set up in Madripoor, it looks like she's been large and in charge for quite some time. What if going on the run really ruined her, and she faked her blipping, so that she could begin her criminal enterprises and then set herself up on the nearly lawless island once everyone returned?

For someone like Sharon to go from being very good and holding on to doing what's right even if it causes her trouble, to being a woman who doesn't believe in heroes and maybe wants the freedom / chaos of the blip times back would make for an awesome villain arc, no?

But, as Emily VanCamp said, there are several unknowns yet with The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and just the fact that Sharon is now rich and rather happy making a living doing something unseemly doesn't automatically mean that she's the Power Broker. So, we'll just have to wait and see how this story unfolds.

This past week brought a character back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we hadn't seen in several years. Emily VanCamp returned as Sharon Carter in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, and quite a bit has happened to her since she graced the big screen. Of course, we last saw her kissing Captain America in Civil War. That moment didn't come without some controversy at the time, but VanCamp takes it all in stride. It was just a moment that wasn't meant to be.

When we first meet the character of Sharon Carter, as the undercover agent living as Steve Rogers' neighbor in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, there is clearly a spark between them. And that spark culminates in the kiss the two share just before Cap goes on the run when she delivers the shield and Falcon's wings to them.

The moment is maybe a little weird because Sharon is the niece of Peggy Carter, who was supposed to be Steve's true love. This is why some fans didn't love the scene. In the end, it was much ado about nothing, as the scene didn't really lead to anything. VanCamp tells Variety that she's overall very proud of the film, even if there are people that didn't love that moment. The actress explains,

It's certainly true that not every decision made by the filmmakers is going to be loved by the fandom. Especially in something as massive and far reaching as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We've seen popular characters killed off and plot twists that have really upset some fans; you certainly can't please everyone.

For any that had a real problem with that kiss, and everything that it might have entailed, there ended up being nothing to worry about. Whether because of or in spite of the response, the relationship between Cap and Sharon Carter ended up not going anywhere beyond that kiss. While there were apparently early thoughts about bringing Sharon back for in Avengers: Infinity War, that ended up not happening.

Instead we didn't see her again until The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where we learn she has become an enemy of the state and can't return to the U.S. for fear of being arrested following her actions in Captain America: Civil War. It's interesting to contemplate how the story could have gone differently if this particular storyline had played differently and more had been done with it previously. Instead, we see a much tougher Sharon Carter, who we almost certainly have not seen the last of, either on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier or in the MCU.

Marvel has been upping their game lately with some of these shows that have been coming out on Disney+. They started out 2021 freaking strong with WandaVision, becoming one of, if not the most popular show on the platform at the time. Now, however, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has smashed the records on Disney+, becoming one of the most viewed premiers so far.

It’s clear that the fans are here for this awesome continuation of these great characters, but because of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, there are several other characters to explore – which means there are plenty of other actors that have been around in Hollywood for some time now. While Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie have made appearances in some of our favorites movies and TV shows, other costars like Emily VanCamp, Don Cheadle, and many others have popped up here and there just as much. This is where you’ve most likely seen The Falcon and the Winter Soldier actors.

Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson)

Anthony Mackie has been around in the business for a while. Fun fact: he even attended the legendary art school, Juilliard, in New York City prior to becoming a famous actor, so he’s not short of awesome talent. His first ever film that he appeared in was the Eminem classic, 8 Mile, playing Papa Doc, followed by some other big hits.

Mackie also had a supporting role in the Oscar-winning film The Hurt Locker, and starred opposite fellow Marvel actor Frank Grillo in the 2019 Netflix thriller Point Blank. Anthony Mackie has always stepped into television a bit recently. He had a starring role in the HBO film, All the Way, talking about the years of Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency. Mackie has also had guest roles on a Black Mirror episode, “Striking Vipers” (yes, that episode), and a starring role in the second season of Altered Carbon on Netflix. It’s refreshing to see him get another lead role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and I can’t wait to see how much more we learn about Sam Wilson.

Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes)

Bucky Barnes has been around since the first Captain America movie, so it was about time he was actually given some real lines and a nice storyline to go along with it in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Sebastian Stan, who has portrayed Bucky since the beginning, has been in plenty of other films and TV that you most likely saw. For example, he portrayed the Mad Hatter for some time on the hit TV show, Once Upon a Time, and had a supporting role in Gossip Girl.

In terms of film, Stan has had several appearances. He’s played main roles in plenty of movies as of recently, such as the Oscar-nominated film, I, Tonya, where he starred alongside Margot Robbie, The Martian – another Oscar-nominated movie – and Black Swan, yet another Oscar-nominated movie. Seems like Sebastian Stan really knows how to pick ‘em.

Other than that, he’s appeared in other films like the supernatural thriller The Covenant, the comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, and several others. It seems like no matter what, you’ll be seeing Stan showing off his acting chops in all kinds of genres.

Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter)

Okay, let’s not talk about the strange romance that she had with Captain America in Captain America: Civil War. Other than that, Sharon Carter is a badass agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and deserves all the praise in the world. Emily VanCamp, the actress behind Sharon Carter, is considered a queen of TV to me.

Why do I say that? Because she has been in so many television shows that are absolute hits. Currently, Emily VanCamp has the main role in the thriller, The Resident, a medical drama that follows the story of a doctor that is secretly a psychopath. Emily VanCamp has also had main roles in Everwood, another medical drama, Revenge, a classic and pure vengeance tale, and Brothers & Sisters, a drama that focuses on the problems a family faces when their patriarch passes away. Truly, she has been around for some time and deserves so much more praise. Hopefully, with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, she can bring a little bit more personality to the otherwise unexplored Sharon Carter.

Don Cheadle (James "Rhodey" Rhodes)

While his role is smaller in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Don Cheadle still shines as James "Rhodey" Rhodes, the former best friend of Iron Man himself, Tony Stark. Don Cheadle, like Anthony Mackie, has been in the business for some time, with one of his first famous films being the hit heist movie, Ocean’s Eleven.

This would be a role he would go on to reprise in both sequels, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen. Cheadle also had a main role in the Oscar-winning movie, Crash, where he played a detective who was investigating recent murders that were based on racial tensions. In terms of TV, Don Cheadle also had a main role in House of Lies, a comedy series that follows the story of management consultants who will stop at nothing to somehow get business deals done.

Wyatt Russell (John Walker)

Yeah, I don’t want to talk about that new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier either, but we gotta because Wyatt Russell is the man behind that reveal. His character, John Walker, is a high-ranking member of the military and has been chosen to become the new Captain America – but Steve in my heart will always hold that place, sorry not sorry.

Besides that, the actor behind him, Wyatt Russell, has appeared in a couple of projects you might recognize. One main hit was the sci-fi action movie, Cowboys & Aliens, about what you would probably expect it to be – cowboys vs a group of aliens. Russell also had a role in 22 Jump Street, the sequel to 21 Jump Street. He played Zook, the friend and later roommate of Channing Tatum’s character, Jenko. And you may also know him from 2018's Overlord.

On the small screen, you may have seen Wyatt Russell before is in the Black Mirror episode, “Playtest,” where his character experiences the advancements (and dangers) of reality technology. Don’t know how well he’ll be as the New Captain America but we can only wait and see.

Erin Kellyman (Karli Morgenthau)

While her character has been flying a little bit under the radar, Erin Kellyman’s version of Karli Morgenthau, the leader of the anti-patriotism group the “Flag-Smashers” is already proving to be a big threat, considering the group, in Episode 1, is causing some hysteria nice and quickly.

The actress herself hasn’t been in many things that have gone mainstream, but among her growing list of credits, there have been some great roles. She recently played Eponine on a British TV miniseries version of the classic story, Les Miserables. Erin Kellyman also had a part in the British drama, Raised by Wolves, and had a minor role in one of the more recent Star Wars spinoffs, Solo: A Star Wars Story as Enfys Nest, the leader of the group of pirates called the “Cloud Riders.” Hopefully stepping into The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will get this young actress some better footing in mainstream TV and movies.

Danny Ramirez (Joaquin Torres)

I know it’s only been a couple of episodes, but I love Joaquin Torres so much. He seems like he’s the type of guy who has that golden-retriever energy and just wants to help out as much as he can despite not technically being a superhero. I can’t wait to see where his character goes as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier progresses.

However, the actor behind this new character is none other than Danny Ramirez, a relative newcomer to Hollywood. While he hasn’t had any super big roles, Ramirez has appeared in multiple shows as guest spots and supporting characters. He’s been on the Netflix dramedy, Orange is the New Black, as well as had a recurring role on The Gifted, which is actually a superhero show. Danny Ramirez also had a small part in another Netflix show, On My Block, a coming-of-age story about four friends navigating the gritty streets of the inner city of South Central Los Angeles. However this is his first main role, so I’m excited to see where he goes.

Georges St-Pierre (Georges Batroc)

Georges St-Pierre is likely better known for his work as a mixed martial artist than for his acting to date – though he does have some credits to his name, including his portrayal of George Batroc, a mercenary and leader of a criminal group under the name of LAF. While Georges St-Pierre may not have much on the acting side just yet, you may have seen him fight once or twice – maybe several in the UFC.

St-Pierre was a two-division champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and has won titles in both the welterweight and the middleweight divisions, so there’s no holding back this awesome mixed martial artist. It was only a matter of time before he had decided to come over to Marvel to show off his amazing talent. However, you might have seen this character, Georges Batroc, before in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as he is reprising the role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. You’ll most certainly see this man kicking butt.

Adepero Oduye (Sarah Wilson)

One of the things I’m really enjoying about The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the inclusion of Sam’s family, and that includes Sarah Wilson, Sam’s sister. I always wondered what it was like to have a superhero as a sibling and if it really affected people’s lives. It’s refreshing to see a different take in a series that’s otherwise going to be about two superheroes, you know?

Adepero Oduye is portraying Sarah Wilson, and so far, she’s done a great job of showing just how much stress has been put onto her family since the blip and everything else. Oduye has made plenty of appearances in movies that you most likely have seen before, but here are just a few for example – she portrayed Eliza in the Best Picture-winning 12 Years A Slave back in 2013, had a role in the Oscar-nominated The Big Short, played a part in the action film Geostorm, and even stepped into the world of heist films by portraying Breechelle in Widows.

She’s surely going to rock it as a Wilson with that list of different genres. I’m super pumped.

Daniel Bruhl (Helmut Zemo)

You might recognize this name from Captain America: Civil War, and that’s because you are right – that is the same Zemo from the third Captain America movie that is making a return in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Not much is known about his role in the upcoming episodes, but if it’s as dangerous as his role in Captain America: Civil War, you’ll find yourself worried about the friendships between supers. This man is an expert at tearing the Avengers apart.

Daniel Bruhl, the actor behind Helmut Zemo, has had a couple of memorable roles that you might have seen him in. He portrayed Fredrick Zoller in the Quentin Tarantino film, Inglourious Basterds, and Niki Lauda in the film, Rush. Some of his more recent roles have been playing Lutz Heck in The Zookeepers Wife and Ernst Schmidt in The Cloverfield Paradox, the third film in the Cloverfield franchise.

I’m sort of lowkey terrified that Zemo will find a way to somehow split up Bucky and Sam after Captain America: Civil War, so I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for him to show up.

With all these actors, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is looking to be an utter showcase of some of the best in Hollywood. I can’t wait to see what their characters do – and the brilliance behind each actor who plays them. It gets me even more excited for the upcoming Marvel movies and upcoming Marvel TV shows. I can feel the nerd-ness overtaking me.

As I was still anticipating the debut of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, one of the biggest questions I had about the Marvel TV show was what Sharon Carter had been up to since we last saw her. During that time, I was also genuinely at a loss for where the actress who plays the former S.H.I.E.L.D. operative, also known as Agent 13, was outside of the MCU. That being said, I soon saw I had plenty of Emily VanCamp movies and TV shows to check out.

Some may have recognized the 34-year-old Canadian actress when she first appeared in the Marvel movies from her lead role on the hit ABC drama Revenge, or even from her brief appearance at the beginning of the horror sequel The Ring Two in 2005. Well, one of those titles is currently available to stream, as well as many others that helped propel Emily VanCamp to where she is today. Maybe when you are not watching The Falcon and the Winter Soldier or waiting for the next upcoming Marvel TV show to premiere, you can catch up on some of her career highlights, starting with her first starring role on a hit series.

Everwood (HBO Max)

After the death of his wife, successful brain surgeon Dr. Andrew "Andy" Brown (Treat Williams) attempts to start things over with his angsty teenage son, Ephram (Gregory Smith), and younger daughter, Delia (Vivien Cardone), by moving from Manhattan to a small, idyllic mountain town in Colorado.

Why It’s Worth Checking Out If You Like Emily VanCamp: Created by future Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti, Everwood is a richly investing family drama which ran for four seasons on The CW, when it was still called The WB, from 2002 to 2006, and proved to be a real breakout hit for Emily VanCamp as Ephram's friend turned potential love interest, Amy Abbott, as well as fellow MCU hero Chris Pratt as her older brother, Bright.

Lost And Delirious (HBO Max)

Meek adolescent student Mary (Mischa Barton from the The O.C. cast) has a revealing first year experience at a high class, all-girls boarding school after discovering that her roommates Paulie (Looper and Covert Affairs actress Piper Perabo) and Tori (former SEAL Team series regular Jessica Paré) are sharing a secret romance that eventually falls prey to the pressures of disapproving friends and family.

Why It’s Worth Checking Out If You Like Emily VanCamp: Emily VanCamp made her acting debut in this theatrically released feature film as Tori's sister, Allison Moller, whom Tori struggles to convince that she is not a lesbian after being caught in the act with Paulie. Lost and Delirious is an adaptation of Susan Swan's acclaimed 2001 coming-of-age novel directed by Swiss filmmaker Léa Pool.

Redeemer (Amazon Prime, Tubi)

Inspired by the story of a former member of the Black Panther Party (Obba Babatundé) who was given a life sentence 20 years earlier for a crime he seems to have not committed, a writer (Stranger Things' Dr. Brenner actor Matthew Modine) assigned to teach inmates his craft attempts to help the man achieve his freedom, but must lead the convict's sister down her own path toward redemption first.

Why It’s Worth Checking Out If You Like Emily VanCamp: Right before Everwood boosted her public persona in 2002, earlier that year Emily VanCamp appeared as Matthew Modine's distressed daughter in Redeemer, a winning TV movie about standing up for justice.

Revenge (Hulu, IMDb TV)

A woman (Emily VanCamp) is strongly driven to infiltrate the high-class society of New York's Hamptons community in order to find and punish those responsible for a destructive act committed against her family years earlier.

Why It’s Worth Checking Out If You Like Emily VanCamp: We swiftly transition from Redeemer to Revenge - the deliciously scandalous, Golden Globe-nominated primetime soap opera that propelled Emily VanCamp to female lead status in 2011 in the role of one rightfully angry and uncompromisingly ruthless socialite for four seasons on ABC. On the set of the series is where she also met co-star Josh Bowman, who would later become her real-life husband.

After a much longer wait than was originally planned, Marvel fans are now just a little over a month away from the debut of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. While we know the basics of what will be in store for us in March when we can finally set our eyes upon the second MCU series on Disney+, there's still plenty we don't fully understand about what, exactly, will go down. But, Emily VanCamp, who will reprise her role as Peggy Carter's niece, former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Sharon, can at least confirm that fans will be treated to some "good old-fashioned action" in the new show.

Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter made her debut in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and returned to help out Team Cap in Civil War, but went unseen in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, with the exception of her picture being shown briefly during that latter film to confirm that she was one of the billions of souls snapped away by Thanos. Sharon was brought back, like everyone else, and will hook up with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes for at least part of their adventures in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. 

When asked by E! if the series will have any trippy, WandaVision-esq surprises in store for fans, VanCamp answered:

You know what? When it comes to superhero shenanigans you just can't go wrong with "good old-fashioned action." While viewers had gotten a couple of teases previously for what TFATWS would have in store for us, the first official full trailer broke a big viewing record after debuting during Sunday's Super Bowl. And, it does look like the show will be filled with the type of action and intrigue we saw in films like The Winter Soldier and Civil War, which hopefully means that the series will keep us just as enthralled as those movies.

So far, we do know that Sam and Bucky will be tasked with stopping some (probably) fiendish plot by Baron Zemo, who seems to be working on a way to stop all superheroes from existing. Along the way, the bickering duo will go on an international adventure, running into War Machine, the newly introduced (and possibly antagonistic) John F. Walker, and Sharon Carter along the way. And, if you missed VanCamp's brief turn as Carter in TFATWS trailer, it's for good reason, as it looks like a lot of her screen time will be filled with the previously on the run former agent kicking a lot of villain ass.

Emily VanCamp also noted that there will be "multiple levels" to TFATWS, which sounds great when taken at face value. But, she also confirmed that we'll likely see "elements" of the wackiness from WandaVision. I don't know about you, but I think this might mean that Phase 4 of the MCU, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier included, is about to be threaded through with a fair bit of multiverse madness.

Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was one of the many TV shows that was forced to stop production earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, production on the show has restarted and appears to be making progress. While a number of the actors still have their share of work to do on the Disney+ series, it appears that Emily VanCamp has actually wrapped filming on her scenes. And the actress marked the occasion with a sweet message.

Upon finishing her work on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp posted a photo of her chair from the set to Instagram. And in the accompanying caption, she confirmed that she’s wrapped on the show and expressed her love for her character, Sharon Carter. You can check out the post down below:

Like many of her fellow actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Emily VanCamp has a lot of affection for her role, which is understandable when you’ve played a character several times. The post is definitely a nice tidbit that will get fans excited, but it also seems VanCamp was able to complete her work safely with the new guidelines in place, which is, of course, the most important thing.

VanCamp’s Sharon Carter, or “Agent 13,” was originally introduced in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent assigned to protect Steve Rogers. She does this by going undercover as a nurse who lives next door to him. Carter returns in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, which sees her working with the C.I.A. following the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. And although she doesn’t physically appear in Avengers: Endgame, a photo reveals that she was one of the casualties of The Snap, meaning she was resurrected off screen by Bruce Banner.

Carter’s inclusion in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier came as a bit of a surprise but one that was welcomed by fans who want to see the character fleshed out a bit more. Her exact role is currently unclear, yet Emily VanCamp has confirmed that we’ll find out what she’s been up to since we last saw her – aside from the five years that she was dead, of course.

My personal guess is that Sharon will be working with Sam Wilson/The Falcon and Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier to track down Helmut Zemo. Though if Marvel Studios has taught us anything, it’s to expect the unexpected when it comes to some of these characters.

Since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be a six-episode series, there’s a chance to really develop Sharon Carter as a character. It’s been a while since we’ve seen her, and it’s reasonable to assume that after everything that’s happened, she’s changed in some ways. Hopefully, this means Emily VanCamp got to tap into some different sides of her this time around.

We’ll see how things play out for Sharon Carter when The Falcon and the Winter Soldier arrives on Disney+ in 2021.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a fascinating place right now, as we're in the interim months between Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Phase Four's start with Black Widow. Plenty of exciting projects have been announced by the studio, including both movies and small screen adventures which will arrive on Disney+. One of these upcoming projects is The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which will bring back Captain America characters Zemo and Sharon Carter. The latter is played by Emily VanCamp, who recently revealed her character's whereabouts during the last two Avengers movies.

Sharon Carter/Agent 13 premiered in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and reprised her role in Phase Three's opener Civil War. She was an ally and potential love interest for Steve Rogers, and was last scene sharing a kiss with the Avenger and giving #TeamCap their equipment ahead of the big tarmac battle. And now Emily VanCamp has explained where her character has been since, saying:

Well, there you go. Agent 13 might have been one of the characters whose whereabout were unknown during Infinity War and Endgame, but the answers are coming. Because it turns out she's been on the run for years.

Emily VanCamp's comments to EW actually make a great deal of sense, given Sharon Carter's plot line in Captain America: Civil War. Despite her tenure at S.H.I.E.L.D., it became clear that Sharon's allegiance was with Captain America, rather than the HYDRA-infused agency she'd been employed by. She provided valuable intel to Steve Rogers throughout Civil War, all ending with returning weapons to Cap, Falcon, and Bucky.

The last we saw Agent 13, she and Steve had their long-awaited kiss (despite her being Peggy's niece). After giving Cap and his friends the equipment they needed for the upcoming airport battle, she reveals she'll have to go away fro a while, as S.H.I.E.L.D. will be after her. And just like that, we haven't seen or heard from her again.

But that'll change with The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, as Sharon Carter will finally pop back up in the MCU to continue her arc. She did indeed go on the run, and likely had some exciting adventures along the way. We'll see how her time away has changed the otherwise hopeful character.

Regardless of where she physically was, Sharon was one of the many characters to fade to dust when Thanos snapped his finger in Avengers: Infinity War. While she didn't have a role in the movie, her face was shown in Avengers: Endgame's opening sequence, which showed all the countless characters who perished during The Decimation. Hulk eventually brought her back, but The Blip has been shown to change characters.

Just because Avengers: Endgame isn't done raking money in at the box office doesn't mean we can't start obsessing heavily over the MCU's future on the small screen, particularly where news about Disney+'s upcoming Falcon & Winter Soldier miniseries is concerned. Fans will be interested to hear that the action-tinged drama will likely welcome back two characters that haven't been seen since Captain America: Civil War: Daniel Brühl's Zemo and Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter. Let's discuss.

At this point, nothing appears to be locked down just yet, with Daniel Brühl and Emily VanCamp currently in talks to sign on for Disney+'s new project that'll focus on Anthony Mackie's Sam "Falcon" Wilson and Sebastian Stan's Bucky "Winter Soldier" Barnes. It's confirmed that the in-negotiations actors would be reprising their former roles, though, and considering things got this far in the process already, it's likely they'll be involved with the final Falcon & Winter Soldier project.

Daniel Brühl's Zemo

As fans will remember, Daniel Brühl took on the role of the comic book villain Helmut Zemo for Captain America: Civil War, though the familiar moniker was toyed with throughout the film. Wisely, the Marvel sequel chose not to kill Zemo off after his malicious machinations set up Civil War's superhero showdown, and it was stated around that time that the villain was possibly being set up for larger stories down the road.

With Avengers: Endgame putting a pin in certain sectors of the MCU's first three phases, it's obviously a good time to bring fan-favorite characters back from previous projects. Daniel Brühl's Zemo could be just the villain that Falcon & Winter Soldier needs to kick things off on the right foot, depending on where this storyline is heading.

Because – surprise, surprise! – knowing that Zemo and Sharon Carter are probably going to return for Falcon & Winter Soldier does not offer fans any notions about how they would be used in the show. The plot, and anything more than the most basic logline, is being held back from the public until closer to release. That made some sense with Avengers: Endgame just hit theaters last month, limiting what could be revealed before that. But now that just about everyone and their grandmother's neighbor has already watched the movie, can we get some more details?

It's known that there were some original plans to have Zemo and Bucky's connection be a major thread for Captain America: Civil War, rather than just serve as the B story. Perhaps there are some elements from that version of the outline that will survive on in Falcon & Winter Soldier, or perhaps learning about Sam Wilson's Endgame promotion will be enough to inspire a second villainous run for TV. (Not that anything has been confirmed about how that gamechanging twist will be handled for the Disney+ series.)

Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter

Emily VanCamp's potential return for Falcon & Winter Soldier is the far more curious news here, all things considered. While Daniel Brühl was lauded for his work as Zemo, Marvel fans were less kind about Sharon Carter's time within the MCU, though it's never necessarily been a knock on VanCamp herself.

Not only is/was Sharon Carter an information-tracking member of the CIA, but she's also a great-niece of Peggy Carter, which is a connection that will no doubt get explored more in Falcon & Winter Soldier if her character gets used. The reason why audiences were largely dismissive of Sharon is because the film seemingly set her up as a love interest for Steve Rogers, viewed as a bad call, and then took her out of the story altogether. She was reportedly meant to return in Avengers: Infinity War, but that didn't happen.

Disney+: Everything We Know About The New Streaming Service

No danger of seeing Sharon and Steve getting hot and heavy in Falcon & Winter Soldier, but the events of Avengers: Endgame do invite some unique questions about how Emily VanCamp's character will get developed. SPOILER WARNING for anyone who hasn't yet watched Avengers: Endgame**.**

Through the time-travel shenanigans that Steve Rogers goes through in order to fix all the Stone-related issues, it became more apparent that Captain America is actually the father of Peggy Carter's children, whose existences was introduced in Captain America: Winter Soldier. That parenthood notion was more or less confirmed by the Avengers: Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, so how will that familial connection get used in Falcon & Winter Soldier?

That's assuming it will get brought up again, of course. It's entirely possible that it could all get waved away with a hand, with Sharon Carter entering the story solely for governmental agency purposes. But it's not the likeliest technique to go with.

Just to put it out there, Sebastian Stan recently brought up the idea that Bucky Barnes could go on a date during the course of Falcon & Winter Soldier. He was seemingly speaking in general terms about how the TV show could let Bucky enjoy more traditional elements of everyday life. However, is it possible that Sharon will come back as Bucky's love interest? That certainly wouldn't rile up anyone in the fanbase.

Currently in the midst of filming Kingsman: The Great Game, Daniel Brühl hasn't taken on any other comic book roles since Captain America: Civil War, though he's been in flicks suck as The Cloverfield Paradox and 7 Days in Entebbe. On the TV side of things, he'd recently starred in TNT's crime mystery The Alienist.

With 2016's Boundaries as the only post-Civil War film for Emily VanCamp, the actress has kept busy on the small screen, where she first made a name for herself on the dramas Brothers & Sisters and Revenge. Most recently, of course, she's been starred in Fox's medical drama The Resident.

Will there be strife between Steve Rogers' best friends whenever Falcon & Winter Soldier starts up on Disney+? We currently have only the slightest inkling of what'll happen, but rest assured that we'll be digging hard into trailers and images for the new show when they become available.

Disney+ is set to go live for streaming customers on Tuesday, November 12, though the company hasn't yet confirmed the entirety of movies and TV shows that will be available at launch. As well, Falcon & Winter Soldier and the other upcoming live-action Marvel shows – such as WandaVision and Tom Hiddleston's standalone Loki series – have yet to get any locked-down release dates. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is 10 years old and a ton of actors have appeared in the ever-growing library of films during that time. This was never more apparent than when the vast majority of this talent both in front of and behind the camera assembled for a class photo. Emily VanCamp, who plays Sharon Carter, received the call to appear for the picture, and while she greatly enjoyed her time in the movies, it felt super weird to be included with all those famous people.

Emily VanCamp appears in the MCU as Sharon Carter, the niece of Peggy Carter. VanCamp has played the character in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War and, although she hasn't appeared as much as other characters, VanCamp has loved the experience of being in these films.

During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, VanCamp talked for a bit about her experience in the MCU and how much she has enjoyed being a part of these movies. Marvel changed the landscape of modern blockbuster filmmaking, and the studio has employed dozens of actors, many of whom have gone on to become superstars. When assembled in one room with all of those people, weird was the primary emotion for VanCamp. The actress took part in Marvel's class photo celebrating a decade of hit movies, and VanCamp felt a reasonable amount of oddness being associated with big name actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Jeff Goldblum, and Scarlett Johansson.

I'd be pretty flabbergasted too if I were suddenly rubbing elbows with Michael Douglas, but VanCamp shouldn't sell herself short. She's been in only two Marvel movies, but both of them are really good. Sharon Carter is a reliable supporting character in both aforementioned films, especially in Civil War where she helps Captain America get out of some jams by providing support from inside the government.

It's no secret that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a pretty giant place. With almost a decade full of films in its impressive history, there are a vast pool of characters to play with. The Russo Brothers will be doing just that with Infinity War and Avengers 4, as they unite the majority of the shared universe's biggest characters in an epic battle against Thanos and his forces. But not every MCU figure made it into the film, and it's increasingly looking like Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter won't be popping up in the rest of Phase Three. She recently explained the reasoning behind this, saying:

It looks like Emily VanCamp seems to understand that Agent 13 is firmly rooted in the Captain America franchise. While Steve Rogers is sure to be one of the leading characters in the next two ensemble movies, working in his love interest into the narrative wasn't necessarily a priority.

Emily VanCamp's comments to Build is sure to be a bit disappointing to Marvel fans. Sharon Carter has been a fairly significant character in both Winter Soldier and Civil War, making her seem like a fine candidate to show up in the upcoming battle against Thanos. But then again, the Russo Brothers have always kept Sharon separate from the rest of the heroes. While she got to have a role in Civil War, she didn't get to participate in the epic airport battle scene in the film's third act.

Then again, Civil War in particular seemed to set up Sharon Carter as a more significant character in the epic shared universe. Her growing attraction toward Steve Rogers reached a boiling point, and she ultimately decided to go behind the government's back to help out Team Cap. The two also shared a brief kiss, presumably setting up a more concrete love story between Cap and Peggy Carter's niece. While the plo tline was kind of incest-y it seems odd that The Russos would spend two movies setting her up, and then drop the character during the universe's big finale.

Of course, it's completely possible that Emily VanCamp is seemingly fibbing, in order to let Sharon Carter's inclusion in Infinity War or Avengers 4 be a surprise. Marvel actors are kept to strict contracts regarding what they can and can't divulge, so Sharon might end up showing up in the end. Presumably all it would take was a day of shooting to have the character react to the apocalyptic events happening.

Captain America hasn't had much luck with romance since he awakened in the present day, whether it's because he's been busy with Avengers or S.H.I.E.L.D. missions, is still catching up on how things have changed since the 1940s or he just hasn't found anyone who's caught his fancy. However, one woman Steve Rogers has had a few sparks with in the modern era is former S.H.I.E.L.D. operative-turned-CIA agent Sharon Carter. Introduced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Sharon helped Steve again during Captain America: Civil War, but there's been no word on if/when Sharon will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When asked about her future with the franchise, Emily VanCamp said that's still to be determined, adding:

While plugging her upcoming TV series The Resident at the Television Critics Association press tour (via Deadline), Emily VanCamp was questioned about what the future holds in store for her version of Sharon Carter, and as of right now, it's up in the air. Given that Steve and Sharon finally seemed to hit it off romantically during Captain America: Civil War, as evidenced by them kissing shortly before the movie's airport battle, one would think that we might revisit the two of them together at some point. However, Avengers: Infinity War wrapped up its production last summer, and Avengers 4 is almost finished rolling cameras, with several of the movie's main actors having already departed. So unless VanCamp is intentionally keeping some kind of cameo to herself or Marvel calls her at the last minute, it doesn't sound like we'll see Sharon again before Phase Three concludes.

Although Peggy Carter has arguably become Captain America's most well-known love interest, in the comics, Sharon and Steve have been more closely intertwined. Sharon was initially introduced as Peggy's younger sister, but as the years passed, she was retconned to being Peggy's great niece, as is the case in the MCU. While the comics Sharon and Steve have gone on numerous adventures together over the course of their on-and-off romance, their film counterparts haven't spent too much time together, although they're interested in one another romantically. While it's certainly possible that Emily VanCamp could be called back for an appearance in Phase Four, given that Chris Evans' future with the MCU post-Avengers 4 is shrouded in mystery, it's hard to say if we'll ever see the two of them together again on the silver screen.

Now, a Captain America actress has revealed that she could have been included in earlier seasons of S.H.I.E.L.D. Emily VanCamp, who plays Sharon Carter, had this to say about appearing on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.:

Emily VanCamp first appeared in the MCU as Agent Sharon Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Sharon survived the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. and went on to join the C.I.A., and it was in her capacity as a C.I.A. operative that she was able to help Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War. As a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent (and the great-niece of Peggy Carter herself), Sharon could have fit right in on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. If we could have Nick Fury and Phil Coulson and Maria Hill, why not Sharon Carter?

Well, it seems that Emily VanCamp's commitments to ABC's Revenge kept her occupied during the period of time when Sharon Carter could have been incorporated into the show. Revenge came to an end on ABC back in 2015, but she has been plenty busy with other projects in the years since. It seems that Sharon Carter on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. simply wasn't meant to be.

Of course, given Emily VanCamp's comments to Deadline about Marvel's levels of secrecy, she could very well reprise the role of Sharon Carter in a future Marvel project, even if she doesn't know it yet herself. The upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movie sounds like it's already packed with just about as many characters as it could possibly take, but the MCU isn't going anywhere, and Sharon Carter didn't die in Captain America: Civil War. She could always come back, whether in a movie or a TV show.

That said, Emily VanCamp could be busy with a non-Marvel project for the foreseeable future. She won a major role on Antoine Fuqua's upcoming medical drama on Fox, called The Resident. If all goes well with the new show, she might not have time for much else, especially if Marvel would need her to drop everything to film immediately. We can only wait and see.

Emily VanCamp made an impression on audiences everywhere thanks to her role on ABC's Revenge, which came to an end after four seasons back in 2015. Now, the actress is headed back to TV for her first regular role since the conclusion of Revenge. VanCamp is moving to Fox to play the female lead in a new drama pilot from Antoine Fuqua, called The Resident.

The Resident will center on a young doctor whose ideals put him in a unique place in the hospital system. He kicks off his career under the sharp eye of a senior resident who uses his experience to reveal the very best and very worst of the medical field nowadays. THR reports that Emily VanCamp will play a nurse named Nicolette.

The cast is rounded out by Manish Dayal, Matt Czuchry, Shaunette Renee Wilson, and Bruce Greenwood in addition to Emily VanCamp. Antoine Fuqua is attached as an executive producer on the pilot, which has been written by Amy Holden Jones of Black Box, and Hayley Schore and Roshan Seth of Code Black. Phillip Noyce - who helmed two episodes of Revenge back in Season 1 - is signed on to direct.

Emily VanCamp is best known on the TV circuit nowadays for her work on Revenge, but she made her big break as a leading lady in an ongoing series on the small screen in the WB series Everwood from 2002-2006. She also had a key role on Brothers & Sisters for the first four seasons, and she still appeared as a guest star in the fifth and final season. She's a veteran of small screen drama, and we can bet that she can tackle whatever The Resident throws her way.

Of course, blockbuster movie fans might recognize Emily VanCamp from somewhere other than Revenge, Brothers & Sisters, or Everwood. VanCamp memorably appeared as Sharon Carter in both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Sharon is still very much alive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; if The Resident is ordered to series, we may see her back on the big screen as well as on the small screen.

Fox has not yet announced when The Resident will go into production. We'll have to wait and see. For Captain America: Civil War, directors Joe and Anthony Russo are bringing back multiple players from their time on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This list already includes the likes of Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, and Anthony Mackie, but now it's been confirmed that yet another star will be returning to the line-up: Emily VanCamp.

Deadline has gotten word from their sources that the actress will be back to play Sharon Carter a.k.a. Agent 13 in Captain America: Civil War. At this time, it's unclear exactly how Carter will mix into the film's plot, or how large her role will be, but it is good news for the actress - especially because it was just revealed last week that her ABC series Revenge has been cancelled.

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we were introduced to Sharon Carter while she is living next door to the titular patriotic hero. While she claims to be a nurse, she is actually an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who has been assigned the task of watching over the super soldier. By the end of the film, it's hinted that Cap might just call her for a date (at the request of Black Widow), and it's shown that after the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. she joins the CIA.

There is actually plenty to potentially explore with the character of Sharon Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - specifically the special origin of her last name. In the comics, Sharon is the niece of Peggy Carter - also known as Captain America's lost love - but in Captain America: The Winter Soldier she is only referred to as "Kate" (her undercover name), and "Sharon." If he hasn't already figured it out in the time between Winter Soldier and Civil War, it should definitely be an interesting moment when Steve Rogers finds out who she is related to, and perhaps even more interesting to see how it winds up affecting the relationship from that point forward.

Great as it will be to see the stars of Winter Soldier again, however, Captain America: Civil War is also enlisting a number of new faces to the Captain America arm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thus far, that list includes Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Daniel Bruhl, Martin Freeman, and Chadwick Boseman. That won't be the end of the new additions, however, as the film is still looking for the actor who will wind up playing the MCU's version of Spider-Man.

Production on Captain America: Civil War is actually already underway down in Atlanta, Georgia, and the massive film is expected to be filming for the next few months. As you might expect, we're already counting down the days until we can see the movie when it hits theaters on May 6, 2016.

Marvel Entertainment has a really big birthday coming up. The prolific company is turning 75 this year, and to celebrate the milestone anniversary, Marvel has partnered with ABC for a primetime TV special. The special will roll with the title Marvel 75 Years: From Pulp to Pop! and will be hosted by none other than Emily VanCamp.

VanCamp’s not as big as many of the names involved with Marvel, either cinematically or otherwise, but she’s actually a great fit to host Marvel 75 Years: From Pulp to Pop!. Marvel fans will know her from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where she played Kate/ Agent 13/ Sharon Carter. In the flick, she plays a key role, starting when Nick Fury hires her to keep an eye on Steve Rogers. She’s also important to ABC, where she stars in the soapy drama, Revenge. With ties to both ABC and Marvel, she’s a nice choice for the gig. Beyond the casting news, a poster was also released related to the big event.

The documentary will run for an hour, and will look back at Marvel’s last 75 years, beginning in 1939. Marvel is also promising “exclusive interviews” although no names are listed, as well as “an extraordinary peek into Marvel's future.” Again, the company is staying mum about what that could mean. Obviously, there are a few different directions this could go in.

This could be a movie announcement, a casting announcement, or even a segment looking at projects the company has already announced. We know Marvel has been considering a Black Panther movie, but that hasn’t been officially announced. Then, the company has projects like Deadpool that have been announced, but haven’t signed on a lead, yet. Finally, Guardians of The Galaxy 2, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Captain America 3 and Avengers 2: Age of Ultron are all in various stages of development, and the peek at Marvel’s future could literally involve any of those projects, as well. A little bit of each of those things would be the best-case scenario, obviously, but we’ll have to wait and see how the special pans out.

The special will air on Tuesday, November 4 at 9 p.m. ET. This means it will be taking over the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. timeslot, which means S.H.I.E.L.D. is likely off of the schedule that night, unless ABC cuts its comedy hour or Forever and shifts S.H.I.E.L.D. into a different timeslot. It’s not unusual for shows to take a week or two off in November, and we’ll let you know how ABC finagles its schedule to give Marvel 75 Years: From Pulp to Pop! a cushy premiere. In any event, Marvel is promising more information over the next several weeks, so we’ll keep you posted.
