Here’s some simple TV math: the longer a series airs, the less likely its original cast will remain intact, regardless of how beloved the show or actor is. The majority of popular series over the years have gone through at least one major exit, and it’s bad enough when changes are revealed early, and characters’ last episodes are planned out and logical. It's far worse, however, when actors suddenly exit projects without any on-screen closure.

Surprise departures can curb audiences' enjoyment of a show, whether from disrupted cast dynamics or shoddy storytelling. And depending on how controversial the exits are, a key departure can completely derail a show's success. So let’s take a look back at some of the most memorable instances when stars parted ways with projects without closing their characters' stories.

Anna Faris (Mom)

During Mom's hiatus following Season 7, co-star Anna Faris suddenly revealed she was leaving the show, which reportedly shocked the creative team as much as fans. Allison Janney & Co. went forward with the eighth season, occasionally referencing Faris’ character Christy, but it was canceled without any kind of conclusion for the character, though the creators made it clear they didn’t want to kill her off.

Chevy Chase (Community)

Community already suffered the exodus of creator Dan Harmon and more creatives in Season 4, and then Chevy Chase allegedly used a racial slur on the set, leading him to drop out of the NBC comedy through mutual agreement with network execs. His character Pierce appeared multiple times after his official exit, due to episodes airing out of order, as well as that hologram cameo in the Season 5 premiere, but the SNL vet never returned as a regular, and was unceremoniously killed off via dialogue two episodes after the cameo.

Danny Masterson (The Ranch)

That ‘70s Show vet Danny Masterson reteamed with Ashton Kutcher on Netflix’s sitcom The Ranch, but was fired in December 2017 after multiple assault allegations against him were publicized. Masterson later faced trial, was convicted and sentenced to prison in September 2023, and did not return as Rooster Bennett, who was written as missing and presumed dead via motorcycle accident.

Suzanne Somers (Three's Company)

Three’s Company's early seasons were bolstered by the popularity of Suzanne Somers’ Chrissy Snow, but network execs reportedly refused the actress’ salary increase requests, leading to a unique stalemate agreement. Somers made only contractually obligated appearances in Season 4 episodes' closing tag scenes, which she filmed separately from her co-stars. Somers was fired by the season’s end, with Chrissy said to be caring for her sick mom in Fresno.

Corey Hawkins (The Walking Dead)

Corey Hawkins joined The Walking Dead Season 6 as comic book fan-favorite Heath, but Straight Outta Compton's release that same year shot him to Hollywood’s stratosphere. In one of TWD’s most baffling moments, Heath disappeared in Season 7, and was never seen from again. Reportedly, Heath would have returned for the movies, but those plans have been shut down.

Emmy Rossum (Shameless)

The final two years of Shameless' 11-season run were without Emmy Rossum’s Fiona Gallagher. The actress announced her shocking exit in 2018, and Fiona’s final appearance came in the emotional Season 9 finale. Despite fans’ hopes, Rossum opted not to return for cameos in the remaining seasons, and the series finale wrapped without any major Fiona updates.

Mandy Patinkin (Criminal Minds)

Criminal Minds began its lengthy run with Mandy Patinkin’s Jason Gideon running the BAU, but that changed ahead of the third season when Patinkin left the show entirely over his disgust with the violent storylines. (He called joining the crime drama his “biggest public mistake” in 2012.) Gideon was replaced and killed off-screen seven seasons later, with Ben Savage guest-starring as young Gideon in flashbacks.

Columbus Short (Scandal)

Ahead of Scandal's Season 3 finale, co-star Columbus Short was arrested over a physical altercation at an L.A. restaurant, and eventually confessed he’d developed drinking and drug habits while dealing with a divorce and custody disputes. Short was fired from Scandal in April 2014, and his character Harrison Wright was revealed in Season 4 to have been killed off.

Gina Carano (The Mandalorian)

Former MMA badass Gina Carano landed the role of Star Wars merc Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, but lost the gig in February 2021. Following a series of controversial social media moves, Lucasfilm announced she would no longer be involved in the show. Cara Dune was not recast, and has not returned to the franchise since the Season 2 finale.

Valerie Harper (Valerie)

The Hogan Family began its existence as Valerie, starring the Emmy-winning Valerie Harper as its lead matriarch for two seasons. She was later fired after salary disputes and sued NBC and production company Lorimar. While her initial claims were dismissed, a judge ruled Harper was indeed wrongfully terminated, netting her a financial win. Her character suffered an offscreen death, leading to the series' name changes.

Robert Downey Jr. (Ally McBeal)

Following a string of 1990s scandals, Robert Downey Jr. landed the role of love interest Larry Paul in Season 4 of Fox’s hit dramedy Ally McBeal, which earned him a Golden Globe. But additional arrests in late 2000 and 2001 led creator David E. Kelley to cut ties with RDJ completely. The fifth season, which would have chronicled Ally and Larry’s post-wedding bliss, had to be completely rewritten.

Shannen Doherty (Charmed)

Though Charmed’s eldest sister Prue Halliwell was the trio's most powerful, the third season finale left Shannen Doherty’s character facing possible death. Though presumptions held that she’d return for Season 4, tensions and more issues surrounding Doherty and Alyssa Milano led to Doherty’s firing via phone call. As such, Prue’s wounds turned out to be fatal, but Doherty did not return for the funeral episode.

Clayne Crawford (Lethal Weapon)

Fox’s iteration of Lethal Weapon paired Rectify vet Clayne Crawford with Damon Wayans. But instead of buddy cop love, reports indicated strife and hostility building between the co-stars, along with complaints about Crawford's directorial work. His exit was reported on the day of the Season 2 finale, which ended on a cliffhanger for his character Riggs, who was unsurprisingly revealed to have succumbed to his wounds. Seann William Scott joined Season 3 as a replacement.

Grace Park (Hawaii Five-0)

After seven seasons portraying Kono Kalakaua for CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 reboot, Grace Park opted to vacate her role alongside Daniel Dae Kim after their attempts to secure pay equality with co-stars Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan were turned down by CBS Television Studios. Kono was revealed to have relocated to Carson City, Nevada, as part of a trafficking task force, with Danny sharing their break-up update in Season 9.

Thomas Gibson (Criminal Minds)

Various Criminal Minds stars exited the drama for different reasons, but Thomas Gibson’s case. stands out. Despite the show still being early into filming Season 12, ABC Studios and CBS Studios revealed the actor’s termination via a joint statement in August 2016, less than a week after Gibson was suspended over an on-set altercation with a writer-producer. A later episode revealed his character Aaron “Hotch” Hotchner entered Witness Protection after discovering serial killer Peter Lewis stalking his son Jack.

Roseanne Barr (Roseanne)

One of the '90s' biggest sitcoms returned to ABC in 2018, with Roseanne bringing comedian Roseanne Barr back as its matriarch. But that return only lasted for a single season, as Barr tweeted a message about former White House Advisor Valerie Jarrett that was considered racist, and two months after its Season 11 renewal, Roseanne was effectively canceled. The network relaunched without Barr as The Conners, which kicked off its run by killing off Roseanne Conner via drug overdose.

Charlie Sheen (Two And A Half Men)

Two and a Half Men thrived on the chemistry between Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer, but the show went into hiatus in 2011 due to Sheen’s then-latest rehab stint, at which point the actor began slamming CBS and Chuck Lorre in a variety of high-profile interviews. Season 8 was then shut down mid-production, with Sheen’s firing later capping things off. His public meltdowns continued capturing headlines as Ashton Kutcher helped fill the Charlie void, and unfortunately didn't make good on rumors of his series finale return.

Lisa Edelstein (House)

Across her years as Dr. Lisa Cuddy, House star Lisa Edelstein went from playing contentious boss to adoring lover. Upon Season 7’s end, she and two co-stars were asked to take salary cuts during contract negotiations, with Edelstein being the lone holdout. She announced her exit ahead of Season 8, and Cuddy was later revealed to have quit as Dean of Medicine, with Omar Epps’ Eric Foreman taking on the duties for the final season.

James Garner (Maverick)

For three seasons, James Garner portrayed Maverick's title character Bret Maverick, but the 1960 writers' strike helped bring that run to a sudden close. When Warner Bros. attempted to lay Garner off due to a lack of scripts, he fought back and successfully sued the studio for breach of contract. According to the actor, he personally turned down an offer to return with a raise, saying, “I want out,” and though Bret appeared in an airing-delayed Season 4 ep which was filmed far earlier, Garner did not return, with fill-in stars Roger Moore and Robert Colbert added later.

Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy)

Katherine Heigl took a temporary leave from Grey’s Anatomy in Season 6 to shoot a movie and spend time with her adopted daughter, which sparked her to request to be released from her contract 18 months early. Disputes have raged on over how her sudden exit was handled, considering Izzy never experienced an official “farewell” scene. Alex Karev’s final ep specifically noted that he and Izzy were back together and raising twins in Kansas. While Heigl notably reunited with former co-stars at the Emmys, giving fans hope that Izzy could return, she has yet to justify those hopes.

Jeff Garlin (The Goldbergs)

Nine months after The Goldbergs co-star George Segal died at 87, lead actor Jeff Garlin vacated the show following multiple HR investigations into allegations of misconduct. The departure was said to be a mutual agreement between the actor and the producers and network, and because it happened in the middle of filming Season 9, the producers used CGI, physical stand-ins, and archival audio to make it appear as if Murray was still around. The writers ditched that idea going into Season 10, though, and revealed Murray's off-camera death.

Freema Agyeman (New Amsterdam)

Freema Agyeman portrayed New Amsterdam's oncology chief Dr. Helen Sharpe for four seasons, and while many expected her back for the fifth and final season, the actress shockingly announced her exit amid the summer hiatus, cheekily pleading for fans to continue Sharpe’s story via fan-fiction. She went on to co-star in the series Dreamland, cementing Sharpe and Dr. Goodwin’s break-up, and though the character did appear on TV in a later Season 5 episode, it was without any overarching updates.

Hartley Sawyer (The Flash)

In 2017, actor Hartley Sawyer landed his stretchiest role yet as The Flash’s Ralph Dibny, a.k.a. Elongated Man. Three years later, in response to his comments about Black Lives Matter, social media users pulled up multiple derogatory and offensive tweets the actor posted between the years of 2009-2014. He publicly apologized for the posts, but a week after waves were made, Warner Bros. TV and The CW fired Sawyer from The Flash, which used an uncredited body double for Season 7’s “Mother” to write Ralph out alongside Sue Dearbon.

Jill Marie Jones (Girlfriends)

Jill Marie Jones crushed it as Girlfriends’ ego-driven Toni Childs for six seasons but was the only main cast holdout who exited the dramedy ahead of Season 7 over her contract expiring. Jones' exit was explained through Toni moving to New York City at the end of Season 6, but Jones spoke openly in 2007 about feeling that Toni’s story wasn’t over and that she'd be willing to return if the writers put something together. Alas, the show was canceled in 2008 before that could happen.

Lori Loughlin (Fuller House)

Lori Loughlin returned to her Full House role of Rebecca for the Netflix continuation series Fuller House, but her appearances ceased in Season 4 after she was fired by Netflix over her and her husband Mossimo Giannulli’s actions regarding the 2019 college admissions bribery scandal. Though the actress was later able to reprise her When Calls the Heart character, Aunt Becky didn't return at all for Season 5.

Kevin Spacey (House Of Cards)

Alongside Robin Wright, Kevin Spacey made streaming TV normal with Netflix’s House of Cards. In the weeks ahead of Season 6's production, Spacey faced widely publicized accusations from actor Anthony Rapp, was subsequently fired by Netflix and was removed from executive producer duties. His character Frank Underwood was revealed to have been poisoned and died ahead of the Season 6 premiere.

Leanna Creel (Saved By The Bell)

Leanna Creel’s Tori Scott remains one of pop culture's biggest curiosities, having slid into NBC’s Saved by the Bell for its final season during a run of episodes lacking Tiffani Thiessen’s Kelly and Elizabeth Berkley’s Jessie. The leather-clad character shook things up for Zack & Co. for just ten episodes, and was never heard from again.

Wayne Rogers (MASH)

Three years after joining CBS' MASH, actor Wayne Rogers grew discouraged by his character Trapper John not reaching his expectations, and unexpectedly opted to quit the hit series ahead of its fourth season. But while fellow exiting co-star McLean Stevenson was able to be written out of the Season 3 finale, Trapper John's absence had to be explained away in the Season 4 premiere without Rogers around.

Ruby Rose (Batwoman)

Batwoman’s first foray into live-action saw Ruby Rose wearing Kate Kane's cape and cowl, but she left the Arrowverse series shortly after the first season ended. Reports noted she was fired over on-set behavior, with Rose claiming the show’s taxing nature led her to suffer back surgery following an alleged on-set accident. Replaced as a lead by Javicia Leslie's Ryan Wilder, Kate later returned in a different physical form without Rose’s involvement.

Kate Jackson (Charlie's Angels)

O.G. Charlie’s Angels star Kate Jackson won viewers’ hearts for three years as Sabrina Duncan, which is when she followed former co-star Farrah Fawcett out the door. Jackson spoke warily of the writers’ scripts, and after being denied the opportunity to join Kramer vs. Kramer due to scheduling, she intentionally caused an on-set mess that led to her dismissal ahead of Season 4. Replaced by Shelley Hack’s Tiffany Wells, Sabrina was revealed to have left the agency to become a mother.

Jon Seda (Chicago P.D.)

Jon Seda’s Antonio Dawson jumped from Chicago Fire to P.D. to Justice and back again for seven years. Surprisingly, NBC and Wolf Entertainment chose not to renew Seda’s contract ahead of Chicago P.D.'s seventh season, and he was let go. Later episodes revealed the character fell back into pill addiction following the prior finale's cliffhanger, and he was checked into rehab, eventually moving to Puerto Rico after resigning from the force.

Selma Blair (Anger Management)

Charlie Sheen followed Two and a Half Men with the comedy Anger Management, co-starring Selma Blair for part of its run as his colleague and fling interest Dr. Kate Wales. Conflict between Blair and Sheen bled into the tabloids, and a reported ultimatum from Sheen led producers to fire Blair, with her character suddenly being explained away as having moved to India.

When it comes to Apple TV+, the platform is known to have plenty of awesome TV shows and miniseries that have become huge hits. We could talk about the major success of Ted Lasso, or maybe other shows such as Five Days at Memorial, but today, we’re going to talk about its latest addition, The Crowded Room. 

The miniseries is a psychological thriller that takes place in New York City. Featuring stars such as Tom Holland, Amanda Seyfried and more, The Crowded Room cast is filled to the brim with actors that you’ve surely seen before. Here is why you're likely to recognize them

Tom Holland (Danny Sullivan)

Starting this list off strong is Tom Holland, who is the male lead for The Crowded Room, playing Danny Sullivan. Holland has been in the industry for years, but most recently he’s gained fame for his role as Peter Parker, otherwise known as Spider-Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he has starred in three films and appeared in a few others. 

Besides that, Holland has also appeared in a variety of movies, including the video game movie adaptation, Uncharted, Cherry, The Devil All The Time, The Impossible, How I Live Now, In The Heart of the Sea and more. He also had a leading voice role in the Pixar film, Onward, back in 2020. 

He's also had some time in television, including guest roles on TV shows, but he also had a role on Wolf Hall back in 2015, so it’s great to see him back on television. 

Amanda Seyfried (Rya Goodwin)

Next up is Amanda Seyfried, who plays the female lead, Rya Goodwin. Seyfriend has been in movies for years. She had her big-screen debut with the comedy classic, Mean Girls, and continued to appear in many others, such as Mamma Mia! and its sequel, Les Miserables, The Last Word, Ted 2, The Big Wedding, The Art of Racing in the Rain, Things Heard and Seen, Dear John, Gone, Mank and many more. 

Seyfried has also had plenty of experience in television. She had a major recurring role on the popular teen drama, Veronica Mars, as well as a main role on Big Love. In 2022, she had the leading role on The Dropout, which garnered her a Primetime Emmy nomination. 

Emmy Rossum (Candy Sullivan)

Moving on, we take a look at Emmy Rossum, who plays Candy Sullivan. Rossum is sort of television royalty in my eyes, because she portrayed Fiona Gallagher on the popular Showtime series, Shameless, for nine seasons. 

Other than that, she was also the main star of Angelyne on Peacock and guest appeared on many other shows. Rossum has also had a pretty big film career, appearing in movies such as Mystic River, The Day After Tomorrow, Comet, The Phantom of the Opera, Beautiful Creatures, A Futile And Stupid Gesture and more. 

With her appearance in The Crowded Room, she only continues to build an impressive resume showing off just how truly talented she is, and I can’t wait to see what she does next. 

Sasha Lane (Ariana)

Sasha Lane portrays Ariana, and the young actress has been on a roll with her films lately. Some of her biggest roles have been in Hearts Beat Loud, After Everything, the 2019 adaptation of Hellboy, How to Blow Up a Pipeline and Daniel Isn’t Real.

Lane also had a pretty prominent role in Loki (which is getting a second season soon) as Hunter C-20. She was also in the show, Amazing Stories, as well as Conversations with Friends and Utopia.  

Will Chase (Martin)

Next up is Will Chase, who plays Martin. Some of the movies that you might have seen him in before include Shaft, Everyday People, A Warrior’s Tale, and After the Wedding, but television is where Chase really shines. 

He had a main role on Nashville, as well as in Dopesick, and recurring roles on Smash and Impulse, among many other guest appearances on shows such as Blue Bloods, Pan Am, and more. 

Lior Raz (Yitzhak)

The next cast member we’re tackling is Lior Raz, who plays Yitzhak in The Crowded Room. The actor has appeared in a variety of movies and television shows. Some of his most known roles are in films like Mabul, Policeman, Mary Magdalene, Operation Finale, and 6 Underground. 

In terms of television, Raz has appeared in main roles in Faude, Hit & Run, and Prime Minister’s Children. 

Jason Isaacs (Jack Lamb)

Jason Issacs plays Jack Lamb in The Crowded Room, and this is an actor who has been in the business for some time. Many know him the most from the Harry Potter franchise, where he played Lucius Malfoy, but Issacs has been in many other movies. Some of his best roles are in films like The Patriot, Peter Pan, Abduction, Green Zone, The Death of Stalin, Fury, Nine Lives, Green Zone, Black Hawk Down, Look Away, and 2022’s Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. 

Issacs has also had some time in television as well, with a main role in Capital City, as well as on Brotherhood, Star Trek: Discovery, and Good Sam. He also had voice roles in the popular animated cartoon, Avatar: The Last Airbender as General Zhao, and in Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which was sadly cancelled after one season.  

Christopher Abbott (Stan)

Moving on, we take a look at Christopher Abbott, who plays Stan. In terms of movies, he’s appeared in films such as Art Machine, James White, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, The Sleepwalker, It Comes At Night, The World to Come, The Forgiven, First Man, Sanctuary and more, and he is also going to be in the upcoming Kraven the Hunter movie. 

Abbott has also appeared in a few television shows. These include a main role in The Sinner, a recurring role on Girls, and a guest role on the popular Hulu show, Ramy.  

Thomas Sadoski (Matty Dunne)

Last but not least, we focused on Thomas Sadoski, who plays Matty Dunne. Sadoski did a lot of work in theatre prior to his career in movies and television, but he has appeared in films such as 20 Beats, Company K, The Mimic, Happy Hour, Winter Solstice, Devotion and more. He also appeared in the first two John Wick movies. 

Sadoski also had a recurring role on As The World Turns, and main roles on Life in Pieces, Tommy, and The Slap. 

With such a great cast, it’s not surprising that they’ve done so much in the world of movies and television. And now you just might have found a new favorite show or film to watch – after binging The Crowded Room, of course. 

Shameless star Emmy Rossum’s latest project is AppleTV+'s The Crowded Room, a thrilling miniseries that has her playing the mother of Tom Holland’s chilling character. Though her casting may look peculiar on the surface, due to the actress only being a decade older than Holland, the actress recently spoke fondly about her experience working on this character, and why it actually makes sense. 

The 36-year-old is the mother to a 2-year-old daughter and a son who is just eight weeks old. That’s far removed from her The Crowded Room character being the mother of Holland’s Danny Sullivan, a young man who gets arrested for his involvement in a New York City shooting and becomes the subject of an investigation by Amanda Seyfried’s Rya Goodwin. Rossum spoke to the role and what attracted her to it with Entertainment Tonight saying: 

Considering her character, Candy Sullivan, having her son when she is 16 and Holland perhaps playing a character younger than his 27-year-old self (he celebrated his birthday with a fun helmet pic of all things just last week) Rossum’s choice in the role actually makes a lot more sense. Not to mention the series tracks some of Danny Sullivan’s childhood, with Zachary Golinger playing the younger version of Tom Holland’s character. Rossum continued to speak about the role, and her relationship with Golinger, saying: 

While it would be pretty much impossible for Rossum to have a 27-year-old son in real life, seeing as she's 36, the circumstances of the series make it more palpable as to why the Shameless alum plays his parent in The Crowded Room. Plus, she was really taken with the role, especially when it comes to building the relationship between Candy and Danny. Along with falling in love with playing the part, Rossum also shared that playing Candy “brings up a lot” of feelings for her as well.

Emmy Rossum revealed that she actually found out she was pregnant with her two-month-old son while she was shooting the last couple of episodes of The Crowded Room. Playing the mother to a son before she had experienced that herself was special to her along with finding the series’ themes about “love and empathy and understanding” really powerful. The actress shared that she feels the AppleTV+ series has a lot to say about how we are all “really just a product of our own upbringings” along with having “imperfections” and “unrealistic expectations” about ourselves and one another. Audiences can look forward to that and "lots of twists and turns" in the new series.

There’s no question that for many of us who watched Shameless Emmy Rossum will always be synonymous with Fiona Gallagher, the eldest sister of the dysfunctional Chicago-based family. So, now that the actress is out and about promoting her new Apple TV+ series The Crowded Room, with some gorgeous curls I might add, the fans of the hit Showtime show are flooding the comments showing their love for her. 

Emmy Rossum took to Instagram to show off her press day fits and hairdo for The Crowded Room, which comes out on the 2023 TV schedule on June 9. While the actress’ voluminous curls were the star of the show, she was also rocking a gorgeous bright red midi-skirt with a white high-neck T-shirt, white heels and a cream purse. Along with the comments about the eldest Gallagher, there were also many GIFs of Rossum as her iconic Shameless character. Many of them featured her flipping her hair or the wind hitting it just right, showing off those iconic curls. 

While Emmy Rossum has many amazing movies and TV shows, like Phantom of the Opera and Mystic River, her run on Shameless is still one of her most iconic roles. While Shameless moved forward without Rossum for Season 10, and Fiona didn’t come back for the series finale either, she’s still loved dearly for that role, and it will likely stick with her for the rest of her career. She was caring and scathing and an overall complex character, and the actress played her perfectly. So, it makes sense that so many fans made callbacks to her time on the Showtime series when they saw this post.

There are plenty of TV actors and actresses who I have come to love and adore in some of my favorite shows, and one of those just happens to be Emmy Rossum. While she has been in plenty of movies to show off her talent, many people probably know her as I do - as Fiona Gallagher, from Shameless. 

However, Emmy Rossum has done plenty of things in both movies and TV, showing off her wide variety of talents, and further proving just how skilled she is, whether it be acting or singing or anything else. If you’re a fan of the actress, here is where you can watch the best Emmy Rossum movies and TV shows, and where they are streaming. 

Shameless (2011-2019)

First up on the list is probably what many people know Emmy Rossum from. Shameless, one of the most popular shows on Showtime, follows the Gallaghers on the South Side of Chicago, as they try to live their everyday lives and somehow grow up better than their miserable alcoholic father, Frank. Fiona has to look after everyone, and make sure everything is in tip top shape. 

As mentioned in the introduction, Emmy Rossum played Fiona Gallagher as part of the Shameless cast until she left at the end of Season 9. While I do love every person in the Shameless cast, from Jeremy Allen White as Lip to William H. Macy as Frank, there is just something about Rossum as Fiona that does it for me. She really was the heart of the show from the very beginning, and all you wanted to do was root for her. 

Personally, I think she should have come back for the end of the series, as Fiona’s character was truly one of my favorites growing up. However, I understand that Rossum had plenty of other things going on in her busy life, so I won’t get too upset.

The Phantom Of The Opera (2004)

Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, The Phantom of the Opera follows the story of a young soprano who works at an opera house, but her talent ends up becoming the fascination of a strange figure who lives under the theater. 

If you want to talk about a classic musical, you can’t get more classical than Phantom of the Opera, and Emmy Rossum as the lead singer, Christine Daaé, is some of the best casting you will ever see in a movie like this. As someone who's seen the musical on stage, I’ll be honest and say that this film adaptation could have been better, but nothing beats Rossum’s performance. Oh, and she sings everything. Everything. She was a trained singer before she ended up in this role, and holy crap she could have been on Broadway instead of in movies and TV.

Comet (2014)

If you’re looking for an interesting romantic dramedy, check out Comet. This film, starring Emmy Rossum and Justin Long, sort of has a sci-fi twist, where we bounce back and forth during the timeline of a six-year relationship with its ups and downs, taking place in a different universe. 

It’s certainly an interesting film from the moment you begin watching it, but what really makes Comet stand out amongst Emmy Rossum’s other performances is her chemistry with co-star Justin Long, as their relationship is believable and a rollercoaster from start to finish, creating a great dramedy that will truly knock your socks off.

Mystic River (2003)

In this Clint Eastwood-directed film, Mystic River documents the story of three men who were once close childhood friends, but when a tragedy ends up hitting one of the families, they all must come together again to figure out what was the exact cause of this tragedy. 

Mystic River was a critically praised film and was nominated for several awards at the Academy Awards, even winning two for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, but did you know that this was one of Emmy Rossum’s breakout roles? She played Katie Markham, who is pretty much the focus of the whole movie, and she truly shined at such a young age. This drama is hard-hitting and is a must-watch for sure, even if her role might have been one you could have forgotten about.

Cold Pursuit (2019)

Starring Liam Neeson, Cold Pursuit is an action/thriller that asks the question “how far are you willing to go for vengeance?” That’s what Neeson’s character decides, as he begins to take out members of a drug cartel one by one after they kill his son. 

You know it’s going to be a good Liam Neeson movie when he’s getting revenge on people for hurting his family - which seems to be his go-to, with films like Taken being some of his biggest box-office draws - but the cast of Cold Pursuit is great as well, with Emmy Rossum playing Kim, a police officer who is working as this string of murders starts to come in. It’s a change from her normal roles but a welcome one, all the same.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

If you’re looking for a great science-fiction disaster movie, you need to watch The Day After Tomorrow. This film shows what might happen if the North Atlantic Ocean circulation was disrupted, and the horrifying extreme weather conditions that would follow and start a brand new ice age. 

Besides Shameless, this was one of the first projects I ever saw Emmy Rossum in, and I loved her in it from the very beginning. There’s just something about The Day After Tomorrow that is so terrifying, but what really makes this movie great is the cast. Emmy Rossum stands out as Laura Chapman, and she and Jake Gyllenhaal had some intense chemistry. While I wouldn’t take anything this film depicts as accurate, there’s no denying it isn’t terrifying to think about what could happen, and we probably wouldn’t handle the crisis very well.

Dare (2009)

Next up, we have Dare, a romantic drama that has been described as a cross between Pretty in Pink and Cruel Intentions. This movie depicts what happens when three high-school friends, who are all going in different directions in life, end up giving into desire and become a part of an intimate three-way which turns their lives upside down. 

As someone who likes a good drama, Dare is certainly up there on my list of guilty pleasures. It doesn’t do anything that really stands out amongst other crazy high school dramas, but what really does it for me, and what drives the film overall, is the casting Emmy Rossum, Zach Gilford, and Ashley Springer. Their story is so complex and interesting that it’s hard to look away until the film ends, and I mean that in a good way.

A Futile And Stupid Gesture (2018)

You knew there’d be at least one Netflix original on here, and that is A Futile and Stupid Gestures. This film, starring Will Forte, is a biographical comedy-drama that tells the story of Douglas Kenney, a troubled comic who truly changed the face of comedic publications with the invention of National Lampoon. 

This film is so stacked with stars - like truly stacked - that you’d think certain performances wouldn’t stand out, but Emmy Rossum as actress Kathryn Walker does, and I truly enjoyed watching her performance amongst all of the other craziness of this film. This movie genuinely tells a great story that will have you invested straight from the beginning, with great performances to boot.

Before I Disappear (2014)

In this drama, Before I Disappear tells the story of Richie, a young man who is upset with how his life has gone, but on the night where he plans to end it all, he gets a call from his estranged sister, and this ends up changing his life forever, showing just how much a single person can affect your life. 

Emmy Rossum is powerful as Maggie in this movie. Truly, I think it’s one of her best film performances yet and it astounds me that it was never really talked about. She nails every line, emotion, and detail that you would expect and steals every scene she is in. Before I Disappear will have you sobbing by the end of it - or, at the very least, wanting to give your own family a call to check up on them.

Angelyne (2022)

Last but not least, we have Angelyne, Emmy Rossum’s latest adventure into television. In this Peacock original miniseries, Rossum stars in the titular, real-life role, a blond bombshell who ended up rising to fame in the '80s, thanks to advertisements, despite her secretive lifestyle. 

If you thought that Emmy Rossum as Fiona was good, you’re going to love her in Angelyne. To be honest, you barely even recognize her, and that’s not just because the wardrobe and makeup is amazingly well-done, but Rossum acts her butt off and truly shows just how much she can step into a character, especially one as eccentric as Angelyne. She transforms for this role.

With all these great options, I’m sure you’ll find something including Emmy Rossum that will capture your attention - and maybe, she’ll even appear in the 2022 movie schedule, giving us more fun things to watch. Only time will tell - but no matter what you pick, it’ll be a fun time.  

Every Hollywood actor has those roles that they got passed over for, and Shameless alum Emmy Rossum is no exception. Having worked in Hollywood for two decades, the actress has brought many film and television characters to life with acclaim and nominations galore. However, there’s one role that left her devastated after learning she lost out to another actress. Rossum revealed she auditioned for a major Marvel role that she didn’t get it.

The actress-singer opened up about losing out on the coveted role while being interviewed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (as shared on Twitter). Emmy Rossum was asked if an internet rumor was true about being in the running for Sue Storm, a.k.a. The Invisible Woman, in the ill-fated Fantastic Four reboot. She revealed this did indeed happen, and then explained what led to her not playing the superheroine:

Of course, Kate Mara ended up becoming the Invisible Woman in the critically panned 2015 superhero film. Well, at least, Emmy Rossum was aware her audition for the producers and studio executives didn’t go well, so she wasn’t that invested in securing the role... or so you’d think. The multihyphenate spilled on being invested in the potential despite not connecting with the character:

It seemed like a bittersweet moment for the Mystic River actress. She was already thinking about all the comic cons, sequels and other advantages of being a Marvel superhero. Given how the film’s poor reception and behind-the-scenes stories, Emmy Rossum might’ve been better off not taking on the role.

But now Marvel’s First Family is joining the MCU, so Rossum might have another chance at the role. Of course, she might have some stiff competition from Mara, Bryce Dallas Howard and Emily Blunt, i.e. other actresses who've been suggested for the Invisible Woman role. While The Martian actress is open to reprising the character, Blunt would be game to play the Marvel superhero if the story was good, while Howard has completely denied rumor about her starring and directing the MCU reboot.

Beloved Showtime dramedy Shameless came to an end earlier this year, and fans are still trying to figure out life without the series in their lives anymore. With Christmas right around the corner, some of the mega-ensemble's cast members have given fans a present in the form of a holiday reunion, which I guess wasn't only about making viewers happy. That said, while lots of familiar faces were on hand, there were a few notable absences.

Noel Fisher, who played the loveable fuck-up Mickey Milkovich throughout the show’s 11-season run, posted some cute photos on his social media pages of him hanging out with his Shameless family. The holiday reunion included Fisher's co-stars Emma Kenney, Shanola Hampton, Kate Miner, Cameron Monaghan, Steve Howey, and Ethan Cutkosky. Check out the fan-pleasing gathering below!

Even though it is a delight seeing the Shameless cast again, not everyone was able to show up to the reunion. Fans couldn’t help but notice that former stars William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum and Jeremy Allen White, in particular, were absent from the many pictures that were posted of the get-together. It’s unclear why they weren’t there, but hopefully they were just busy with other prior commitments, with Rossum seemingly having been working on the upcoming Peacock drama Angelyne ever since she left her role as Fiona Gallagher.

Meanwhile, Noel Fisher wasn’t the only one to happily share reunion pictures. Shanola Hampton, known as “V” on Shameless, shared additional photos to her Instagram that includes a selfie of her and her former castmates:

Appearing on Shameless since Season 9 as Tami Tamietti, Kate Miner also took to Instagram to revel in the happy reunion, and fans couldn’t get enough in the comments:

Emma Kenney, who grew up with the show while portraying Debs, also made sure to share pictures on her Instagram. It wasn’t so much of the reunion as a whole, but rather of the outfit she was wearing. And who can blame her when she pulls the look off in such a way:

It may not be so surprising to see that not everyone on cast showed up to the reunion. Emmy Rossum somewhat suddenly departed from Shameless after Season 9, and while it was definitely heartbreaking for viewers, Emma Kenney revealed in October of this year that Rossum's exit might have been a good thing, for one reason or another. It’s hard to tell what Rossum’s relationship has been like with Kenney and the rest of the cast over the last few years, but hopefully there are no hard feelings.

Fingers crossed that there is another Shameless reunion in the future, and perhaps even one for TV. Even though it hasn’t been that long since the series came to an end, fans were more than ecstatic to see their favorites together once again. Hopefully this isn’t the last time they’re together, but if all we get in the future is a franchise of buddy comedies co-starring Cameron Monaghan and Noel Fisher, so be it.

Christmas came early this year in the form of a Shameless reunion, and I could not be more grateful. Okay, I would have been more grateful if there was lots of videos. Still, it’s always nice seeing casts of shows that are no longer around getting back together, because it just shows that the chemistry on screen is just as real as it is in real life.

Late August of 2018 marked a sad time for fans of Showtime’s long-running hit, Shameless, as star Emmy Rossum announced that Season 9 would be her last. While there was some doubt at first about whether or not the series would go on without the actress who played the character that many considered the (sometimes broken) heart of the show, the family dramedy did, in fact, run through Season 11, and wrapped earlier this year. Now that the series is over, Rossum’s co-star, Emma Kenney, has revealed why her exit was probably a good thing.

Emma Kenney and Emmy Rossum worked together for quite a long time, and through Kenney’s formative years, seeing as how she started the show when she was just a little girl. While Rossum’s Fiona frequently tried really hard to lead Kenney’s Debbie along a straight and narrow path, it sounds like the same wasn’t always true in real life for the young actresses who played siblings on Shameless. Kenney was interviewed on the Call Her Daddy podcast recently, and when asked if their relationship ever felt sisterly off camera, she said “one hundred percent, in good and bad ways,” and added:

The Shameless cast has always appeared to be a very close one behind the scenes, and even though Emma Kenney’s words about Emmy Rossum make it sound as though that’s not true, she does seem to still be able to offer a lot of grace to the show’s former lead. One can only guess at what the “not the best advice” was that the younger star received from her on-screen big sister, but it sounds like Kenney believes that there may have been things Rossum was dealing with that impacted how she interacted with her much younger co-star.

Overall, it does sound like Kenney has been able to reflect on what went on with Rossum, and others, on the Shameless set, and take away some good lessons on how to handle things in her own life, whether professionally or personally. Kenney also noted that, for the most part, the cast felt and still feels “like a family,” and said that co-star Shanola Hampton, who played Fiona’s best bud Veronica, was always there with solid advice.

As you can see, Kenney kept her comments about Rossum pretty respectful, but didn’t hold back when it came to telling the truth. When reflecting on what things were like once Rossum left Shameless behind, Kenney said:

Emma Kenney added that while she and Emmy Rossum haven’t kept in touch, she has “a lot of love for her,” so it’s good that she’s been able to put her Shameless experience into perspective and see it as a largely positive experience.

Major spoilers below for anyone who didn't watch Shameless' series finale on Showtime, so be warned!

After eleven seasons of boozed-up, dysfunctional mayhem from the entirety of the Gallagher family, Showtime's longest-running drama Shameless came to its bittersweet and darkly comedic conclusion with its series finale titled "Father Frank, Full of Grace." Fans had tons of expectations going into that finale, with the largest one hinging on Emmy Rossum returning as estranged daughter/sibling Fiona. That didn't happen, sadly, and the finale also surprisingly left things pretty open-ended for a variety of main characters. Well, except for William H. Macy's Frank, of course.

The Gallagher family patriarch and anti-role model Frank met his maker in a predictably strange and subdued fashion, which was capped off in one of the greatest mid-credits scenes in all of television. But before we get to that, let's talk about the glaring absence of one Emmy Rossum.

Why Emmy Rossum Didn't Return For Shameless' Finale

As Shameless fans are well aware, Emmy Rossum took absence from the Showtime drama back in March 2019 for the Season 9 finale, with Fiona rounding up some money and taking a plane ride the hell away from the rest of the Gallagher clan, never to return again. (At least during the show moments that viewers were privy to.) Though fans were strongly hoping for producers to find a way to bring Rossum back into the fold, it sadly did not happen. However, executive producer John Wells says that there definitely was a concerted effort to showcase Rossum's Fiona one final time, even though it didn't work out. Here's what he told TVLine:

As John Wells implied, the COVID pandemic has obviously taken serious tolls on untold numbers of people around the world, so a TV finale isn't the biggest victim here. But still, removed from that grander context, it was hugely disappointing to go through the entire finale without seeing Fiona pop up at some point. Even if it would have just been a Zoom call with Emma Kenney's Debbie or something. Sigh.

How Shameless Ended For Frank And Others

William H. Macy's Frank definitely had the most eventful finale, at least in terms of experiencing permanent character changes. The episode started off following up on his couch-set overdose from the previous episode, and in true Gallagher form, none of the family members did much to check on Frank's vitals or his general well-being. They just left him to his devices, and only Christian Isaiah's noticed whenever Frank got up and shambled out into the world.

Frank's issues were likely a mix of drugs in his system, his dementia, and his somewhat surprising COVID-19 diagnosis, and he looked like death warmed over, fittingly enough. After taking an ambulance ride from a church to a hospital, Frank found solace in a flashback-filled trip down memory lane, though none of his children found solace in the note he left before shooting up that last time, considering they didn't find the note at all before the credits rolled.

After Frank passed, his ghostly form floated above the heads of his family and friends inside The Alibi, watching over everyone until he made his grand exit by floating up into the ethers. It was an oddly supernatural moment for Shameless, but just in case that was too sweet of an ending for Frank, the episode's mid-credit moment added some hilarious punctuation to his death. As Frank's body was being processed inside a crematorium, it was so full of alcohol that it exploded the whole building.

Other characters' stories featured far less closure. Cameron Monaghan's Ian and Noel Fisher's Mickey, who'd recently moved into their own digs, discussed the notion of having children at some point. Mickey was haunted by the notion that he might fail as a dad, while Ian was more optimistic about the concept, even tossing the idea out there that they could potentially adopt someone less fortunate within the Noel's fam. Meanwhile, Debbie got horny for Shakira Barrera's criminalistic Heidi, but viewers never got to see if Debbie accepted Heidi's offer to leave Chicago on an expansive road trip.

Speaking of moments that weren't confirmed or otherwise, viewers were left in the dark about whether Jeremy Allen White's thirst-trapping Lip and Kate Miner's Tami will be having a child together, as it wasn't revealed in full whether Tami was pregnant. Lip was also having issues trying to sell the house, and likely wasn't going to make a proper amount of money off of it, so that's another blow against him. It also looked like The Alibi might get sold off, too, with Steve Howey's Kevin and Shanola Hampton's Veronica looking into their options. So it was somewhat surprising when Ethan Cutkosky's Carl and his fellow cop buddy (played by Joshua Malina) talked to Kevin about buying it and turning it into a cop-friendly bar. Of course, that was another plot strand that was left open-ended.

Given how many characters' stories didn't have proper conclusions, fans might have suspected that the creative team was setting up one or more spinoffs to hit Showtime at a later date. However, John Wells doesn't make it seem like that's the case at all. In his words:

For John Wells, it's more interesting to leave a story off when the action is still taking place, as opposed to letting things drift off after all the explanations have been laid out. It certainly gave viewers more to discuss by way of what they think will happen next for the characters, but it also likely made viewers pretty aggravated that so many story strands were left hanging.

Perhaps Shameless will one day live on in some other form, but for now, the Showtime drama has officially capped off its eleven-season run. While waiting to see everything that the cast is doing next, R.I.P. Frank, and we'll hopefully see you soon, Fiona!

Ten years after its series premiere, Shameless is coming to an end with its eleventh season. A rambunctious, irreverent American adaptation of the notorious British series, Shameless became a popular favorite for Showtime, propelling Emmy Rossum's career, providing a nice, steady gig for character actor William H. Macy, and launching and/or elevating the careers of Justin Chatwin, Cameron Monaghan, Jeremy Allen White, Emma Kenney, Shanola Hampton, and Steve Howey. Now that the series finale is set to air this Sunday, April 11th, what is the Shameless cast working on now? Let's find out!

William H. Macy (Frank Gallagher)

Playing the part of Frank Gallagher, the family's dysfunctional, alcoholic single father, William H. Macy gives an Emmy-nominated performance in Shameless. He also wrote and directed a few episodes. Most notably, Macy is Oscar-nominated for his supporting turn as Jerry Lundegaard in Fargo. He also won two Emmys — both as an actor and screenwriter — for 2003's Door to Door. Macy's other film credits include Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Room, Jurassic Park III, The Cooler, Searching for Bobby Fischer, Mystery Men, Seabiscuit, Mr. Holland's Opus, The Sessions, Pleasantville, Psycho (1998), Air Force One, Ghosts of Mississippi, Spartan, The Lincoln Lawyer, and Happy, Texas.

Additionally, on television, William H. Macy's other notable credits include ER, Sports Night, Frasier, and Law & Order. Also, Macy wrote, directed, produced, and acted in 2014's Rudderless. He also helmed 2017's The Layover and Krystal. Furthermore, Macy narrated PBS's Curious George. At the moment, the actor's next project is unknown.

Emmy Rossum (Fiona Gallagher)

In the role of Fiona Gallagher, the eldest Gallagher child who often needed to take care of her rambunctious siblings (and her undependable father), Emmy Rossum played a main character in the first nine seasons of Showtime's Shameless. In addition to starring in this show, the actress directed a couple of episodes. Outside of Shameless, Rossum is known for her lead role in 2004's The Phantom of the Opera, for which she was Golden Globe-nominated. Her other film credits include Mystic River, The Day After Tomorrow, Poseidon, Dragonball Evolution, Beautiful Creatures, Comet (which she also produced), A Futile and Stupid Gesture, Songcatcher, and Cold Pursuit. Additionally, Rossum made guest appearances in As the World Turns, The Practice, and Mr. Robot.

Outside of acting, Emmy Rossum also directed episodes of TNT's Animal Kingdom and Amazon Prime's Modern Love. Additionally, she released two albums, 2007's Inside Out and 2013's Sentimental Journey, as well as 2007's EP, Carol of the Bells. Next, Rossum plays the lead role in Peacock's new limited series, Angelyne, which she'll also produce.

Justin Chatwin (Steve Wilton/Jimmy Lishman)

As Steve Wilton, i.e. Jimmy Lishman, i.e. "Jack," Justin Chatwin played a mysterious love interest for Fiona Gallagher in Shameless. Away from this series, Chatwin is known for playing Goku in Dragonball Evolution and Nick Powell in The Invisible. His other notable film credits include War of the Worlds, The Chumscrubber, Taking Lives, Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2, Josie and the Pussycats, Bang Bang Baby, Urge, CHIPS, No Stranger Than Love, One Night, The Scent of Rain and Lightning, and The Assassin's Code. Also, on TV, Chatwin appears in Weeds, Traffic, Orphan Black, American Gothic, Doctor Who, Smallville, and Lost. Currently, the actor stars in Netflix's Another Life.

Next, Justin Chatwin will be seen in Die in a Gunfight and Boneyard Canteen. He'll also reprise his role as Erik Wallace in the second season of Another Life.

Cameron Monaghan (Ian Gallagher)

Playing the part of Ian Gallagher, the resilient but unstable third oldest Gallagher child, Cameron Monaghan plays a troubled personality in Showtime's Shameless. Outside of this series, Monaghan is known for his recurring roles as Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska, i.e. the twins who forge Joker's origins, in Fox's Gotham. Additionally, Monaghan played Tom Fairfax in PBS's short-lived series, Mercy Street. The actor's other television credits include Malcolm in the Middle, Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, Criminal Minds, NCIS, The Mentalist, Monk, and Numb3rs.

Additionally, on the big screen, Cameron Monaghan can be seen in Click, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, Safe Harbor, Vampire Academy, Amityville: The Awakening, The Giver, Prom, and The Year of Spectacular Men. Furthermore, the actor played Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. As a voice actor, meanwhile, Monaghan is heard in Avatar: The Last Airbender and Reign of the Superman. Currently, Monaghan is lending his voice to My Love Affair with Marriage. Next, Monaghan is attached to the upcoming thriller, The White Devil.

Ethan Cutkosky (Carl Gallagher)

In the role of Carl Gallagher, the second youngest Gallagher child, Ethan Cutkosky was a main character throughout all eleven seasons of Shameless. Outside of this series, Cutkosky is known for playing a prominent part in The Unborn. His other film credits include Conviction and Fred Claus. Additionally, the actor can be seen in Vic Mensa Feat. Pusha T's "OMG" music video. This year, Cutkosky reprised his role as Henry Mesner — a character he first played in a 2013 guest spot — on Law & Order: SVU. Also, the actor guest-starred in Starz's Power. Next, Cutkosky appears in Alex/October.

Shanola Hampton (Veronica “V” Fisher)

As Veronica "V" Fisher, Fiona's best pal and the Gallaghers' friendly neighbor, Shanola Hampton plays a reliable supporting character in Shameless. She also directed an episode in the show's final season. Her other TV credits include Related, Miami Medical, Stalker, Reba, Popular, Criminal Minds, and Scrubs. Additionally, Hampton can be seen in films like You Again, Suburban Gothic, Forever, and Things Never Said.

Most recently, Shanola Hampton starred in Netflix's Deadly Illusions, which she also produced. Also, this past fall, the actress made a notable guest appearance in The Eric Andre Show's most recent season. She was cast in the lead role of NBC's Night School, but the pilot wasn't picked up. Hampton's next project hasn't been announced yet.

Steve Howey (Kevin “Kev” Ball)

Playing the part of Kevin Ball, i.e. "Kev," the Gallaghers' neighbor and the bartender at Frank's favorite pub, Steve Howey is a main cast member in Shameless. Most notably, the actor is known for playing Van Montgomery on Reba. His other TV credits include Ctrl, Sons of Anarchy, ER, The Drew Carey Show, Psych, New Girl, Sons of Anarchy, Workaholics, Law & Order: SVU, and Dead to Me.

Additionally, on the big screen, Steve Howey appears in movies like Something Borrowed, DOA: Dead or Alive, Still Waiting ..., Stan Helsing, Wrong Cops, Game Over Man!, See You in Valhalla, Bride Wars, Unleashed, Making Babies, Supercross, Love on the Run, and Stuber. Next, the actor will be seen in Netflix's vampire comedy, Day Shift.

Emma Kenney (Debbie Gallagher)

In the role of Debbie Gallagher, the third youngest Gallagher child, Emma Kenney was a mature character who became impulsive and self-centered as the series continued. Away from this series, Kenney was a main character on ABC's Roseanne as Harris Conner-Healy. Now, the actress plays the part in the spin-off series, The Conners. Kenney can also be seen in HBO's Boardwalk Empire. Additionally, her film credits include Robert the Bruce, Bittersweet, Day Camp, and Back to Lyla. Furthermore, the former child actress can be heard in Blue Sky Studios' Epic.

Next, Emma Kenney will appear in Growing Up Gorman. She'll also lend her voice to My Love Affair with Marriage.

Jeremy Allen White (Philip “Lip” Gallagher)

As Philip "Lip" Gallagher, the second-eldest Gallagher child, Jeremy Allen White plays a smart (if not always considerate) character in Shameless. Away from this series, White appeared in Homecoming, Law & Order, Conviction, and Law & Order: SVU. In film, meanwhile, White can be seen in Twelve, Rob the Mob, Movie 43, Bad Turn Worse, Beautiful Ohio, The Speed of Life, Afterschool, After Everything, and The Time Being. Additionally, White starred in, wrote, and produced 2008's short film, The Fourth.

Most recently, Jeremy Allen White appeared in The Rental and Vienna and the Fantomes. Next, the actor will be seen in The Birthday Cake and You Can't Win.

Noel Fisher (Mickey Milkovich)

Playing the part of Mickey Milkovich, the intense (and often violent) older brother of Mandy Milkovich, Noel Fisher is a recurring presence in Shameless. He was one of the main characters in Seasons 3 through 5, as well as 10 through 11, while also being a familiar face throughout the other seasons. Outside of this series, Fisher's notable film and TV credits include playing Cael Malloy in FX's The Riches, Ellison "Cotton Top" Mounts in The History Channel's Hatfields & McCoys, Vladimir in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2, and Michaelangelo in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) and its sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

Additionally, Noel Fisher can be seen in shows like Castle Rock, Fear the Walking Dead, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, The Pacific, Law & Order: SVU, and Bones. Also, the actor's other film credits include Final Destination 2, Freddy Got Fingered, Max Keeble's Big Move, and Battle Los Angeles. Most recently, Fisher appeared in Capone and ABC's The Conners. Christian Isaiah (Liam Gallagher)

In the role of Liam Gallagher, the youngest Gallagher child, Christian Isaiah became a main character on Shameless during its extended run. Away from this series, Isaiah plays Young Phil Saunders in Borrasca. His other TV credits include Married, Reel Kids, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Teachers, Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G., and Action Nat and the Cat. In film, additionally, Isaiah appears in 21 Bridges, Induced Effect, and Dead Women Walking. His next project hasn't been announced.

Kate Miner (Tami Tamietti)

As Tami Tamietti, Lip's romantic partner and the mother of his child, Kate Miner became a main character in Shameless starting in Season 9. Outside of this series, Miner played lead roles in NBC's Persons Unknown and USA Network's Necessary Roughness, respectively. Her other TV credits include Two and a Half Men, Scandal, Hellcats, CSI: Miami, Ugly Betty, Drake & Josh, Malcolm in the Middle, Boston Public, ER, Hart of Dixie, Life in Pieces, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and Grey's Anatomy. Joan Cusack (Sheila Jackson)

In the role of Sheila Jackson, Frank's former love interest, Joan Cusack won an Emmy for her work in Showtime's Shameless. While her performance is one of the show's most acclaimed, she exited the series after Season 5. An Oscar-nominated actress for her supporting turns as Cyn in Working Girl, and Emily Montgomery in In & Out, Cusack is also well-known for her voice work as Jessie in Toy Story 2, 3, and 4. Additionally, her other film roles include School of Rock, Addams Family Values, Nine Months, Grosse Point Blank, Runaway Bride, High Fidelity, Friends with Money, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The End of the Tour, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, and Let It Snow.

Additionally, on television, Joan Cusack appeared in Saturday Night Live, What About Joan?, and A Series of Unfortunate Events. The actress was also the narrator of Peep and the Big Wide World, for which she was Emmy-nominated. Most recently, Cusack was seen in Amazon Prime's Homecoming. Shameless is airing its final season on Showtime.

It is a bittersweet time to be fan of Shameless, Showtime’s American update of the hit British family dramedy, which is ending this year after 11 seasons. On the other hand, for many devotees to the Gallagher clan, the real bittersweet moment was when Emmy Rossum left the show in 2019. Other than praying for Fiona Gallagher to make an appearance before the series finale of Shameless or waiting for the premiere of her upcoming miniseries Angelyne, I imagine some of her loyal followers have managed to find some ways to cope since Emmy Rossum’s Season 9 exit.

They may have tried binging her best moments on the Emmy-winning series, checking out some of the music they previously did not know she released as singer-songwriter, and discovering some of her efforts behind-the camera (such as directing an episode of Amazon’s romantic anthology series Modern Love). Or, they revisited some of her other best known acting credits. Who could forget her Golden Globe-nominated role as the object of Gerard Butler’s affection in Joel Schumacher’s The Phantom of the Opera, or more recent films like the National Lampoon creator biopic, A Futile and Stupid Gesture, and the 2019 action film Cold Pursuit, with Liam Neeson?

It is perfectly fine if these are her only roles, outside of Shameless, which you actually do remember. In fact, lucky for you, we have made it a specialty of ours lately to help remind fans of performances by their favorite stars that may have slipped their minds over the years. I came up with 10 for Emmy Rossum, starting with her very first gig.

Law & Order (Alison Martin)

Emmy Rossum was 11 when this 1997 Law & Order episode aired, in which she plays Alison Martin, whose father is suspected of killing his wife’s uncle. As it turns out, he is guilty of the murder, because the Egyptian uncle had hired an Egyptian doctor to perform a female circumcision on young Alison - which her mother made no attempts to prevent. Coming onto the scene immediately with a role that dark gives a performer the strength to take on anything.

Mystic River (Katie Markum)

Six years later, Emmy Rossum channeled that strength to play teenage Katie Markham, whose murder is the central focus of Clint Eastwood’s brutal drama Mystic River, as based on Dennis Lehane’s novel. Sean Penn won his first Oscar playing Katie’s distraught, ex-con father; Kevin Bacon his old friend, now a detective working the case; and Tim Robbins also gives an Oscar-winning performance as their other friend who has long struggled with his own traumatic childhood experience. Painful secrets from their past and lies from the present come to the surfaces as the investigation of Katie’s death evolves, and the movie is a must watch.

Genius (Claire Addison)

Secrets and lies are the foundation of Claire Addison’s (a delightfully charismatic teenage Emmy Rossum) relationship with trouble-making junior high student Chaz Anthony, or so she thinks. Chaz is actually Charlie Boyle (Jurassic Park III’s Trevor Morgan), a socially inexperienced 14-year-old science prodigy tasked with assisting a crackpot professor who wants to defy gravity at the university where Claire’s dad coaches hockey. Charlie creates the “Chaz” persona to impress Claire after immediately falling for her, only leading to more problems, in Genius - a 1999 Disney Channel original movie that still holds up well.

The Day After Tomorrow (Laura Chapman)

Whether or not schlockmeister Roland Emmerich’s 2004 B-movie parading as a cautionary climate change tale holds up today depends on your ability to suspend disbelief or your appreciation for cheesy disaster flicks. Emmy Rossum actually gets to play a science whiz herself as Laura Chapman in The Day After Tomorrow, as well as the love interest of 24-year-old Jake Gyllenhaal as Sam Hall - both of whom are trapped in New York while Hall’s paleoclimatologist father Jack (Dennis Quaid) races to rescue them in the midst of a new Ice Age.

Poseidon (Jennifer Ramsey)

Speaking of cheesy disaster flicks, Emmy Rossum seemed to be on a role with the genre by 2006, when she starred in Wolfgang Petersen’s single-word remake of 1972’s The Poseidon Adventure. She plays Jennifer (daughter of Kurt Russell as a former New York mayor), who is one of several survivors desperately searching for a safe exit after a tidal wave causes the titular cruise ship to capsize on one fateful New Year’s Eve.

Before I Disappear (Maggie)

The fate of writer and director Shawn Christensen’s suicidal character, Richie, is postponed when his estranged sister Maggie (Emmy Rossum) urgently asks him to look after her precocious, 11-year-old daughter Sophia (Fatima Ptacek, the voice of Dora the Explorer) in Before I Disappear. Other than Rossum’s powerful supporting role, this 2014 feature-length update of Christensen’s own 19-minute drama Curfew (which earned him the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short film in 2013) has a relatable darkness and even a grim sense of humor that may, strongly, appeal to Shameless fans.

The Audrey Hepburn Story (Young Audrey Hepburn)

Fans of Shameless may also be curious to see how Emmy Rossum pulls off portraying an Academy Award-winning screen legend in her teenage years in The Audrey Hepburn Story. The 2000 made-for-TV biopic chronicles the life of the Dutch Breakfast at Tiffany’s star from her struggles with her parents’ divorce and living under Nazi-rule during War World II to her career as one of Hollywood’s most beloved actresses, at which point she is played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, who also serves as co-executive producer.

Comet (Kimberly)

Speaking of love, the relationship between the pessimistic Dell (Justin Long) and the witty Kimberly (Emmy Rossum) is a complicated and strange trip told over the course of six years in Comet. The romantic dramedy with a unique sci-fi edge turned out to be the catalyst of a real-life love story between Rossum and writer and director Sam Esmail, who made his feature-length debut with the 2014 film before becoming the prolific mastermind of such series as Homecoming, an upcoming revival of Battlestar Galactica, and Mr. Robot.

Mr. Robot (Caroler #1)

Speaking of that highly acclaimed, Emmy-winning USA original series, creator Sam Esmail would later cast his wife in the fourth and final season premiere of Mr. Robot, starring Oscar-winner Rami Malek as a mentally disturbed cyber-security engineer who moonlights as a vigilante hacker. Emmy Rossum makes an uncredited, blink-and-you-miss-it appearance as part of a group of Christmas carol singers whom Malek’s Elliot Alderson and Christian Slater’s title character walk past in New York City.

Dragonball Evolution (Bulma)

One would imagine that Emmy Rossum looks back on her involvement with this 2009 adaptation of the popular anime wishing you could miss her with just a blink. Instead, she is a major presence in Dragonball Evolution as scientist Bulma - one of the many characters from Akira Toriyama’s original Japanese manga subjected to shameless white-washing in this attempt at a new live-action franchise. The movie now lives in infamy as a critical and commercial failure at levels of “over 9000!”

Shameless fans, I can’t believe the moment is finally here. After months of the Showtime series’ final season being a giant question mark on the schedule due to Covid-19 delays and more, Shameless is finally airing its 11th and final season this month. Now, showrunner John Wells has spoken out about how Emmy Rossum’s Fiona character could still come back in Season 11 and what that would look like, should the scheduling work out.

Right now, either John Wells is awesome about keeping spoilers to himself or he still hasn’t quite worked out a come back on the show for Emmy Rossum, who currently is on a break from the Angelyne production that was halted due to the pandemic. If she were to join Shameless, it definitely wouldn’t be for a major multi-episode arc, but John Wells says he is trying really hard to find a way to work the character in on a smaller scale.

Like a lot of productions right now, the scheduling for Shameless (and for Emmy Rossum's other big project right now Angelyne) has been tricky and filled with pitfalls. We in fact, didn’t even know the show had gone back into production until other series lead Emma Kenney (Debbie) posted about it on her social media back in September. Due to circumstances this year, the 2020 premiere date has also been a surprise. As John Wells intimated to THR, we shouldn’t get our hopes up about Rossum in Shameless’ finale, but if you can’t help yourself the Showtime series is still trying its hardest to make it work, despite the “logistical” nightmare.

The showrunner does want to make it abundantly clear that whatever happens is not totally on Emmy Rossum, either. This year has been unprecedented and has changed a lot about how TV productions work. John Wells also elaborated further on why these types of minor cameos are less easy to work out than they used to be.

So, if Emmy Rossum doesn’t show up, don’t blame her too much. Meanwhile, the Internet has been totally obsessed with Ian and Mickey today, so a Fiona-less finale would still presumably have a lot to offer for fans. Still, I’m waiting and hoping that the original cast gets its moment in Season 11. Yet 2020 has made abundantly clear, however, we can’t always get what we want.

Already a superhero of sorts in her own right is Emmy Rossum, having played a woman of great resilience on Showtime’s American remake of hit UK family dramedy Shameless until her Season 9 exit. However, the Golden Globe-nominated actress has never gone the route of celebrities who go on to play actual costumed vigilantes in Marvel movies and DC movies.

Yet, the New York native has been the subject of fancasting, with comic book readers believing her to be a perfect choice for certain heroes who have yet to be given the cinematic treatment. This is despite the fact that she did appear in the 2009 film Dodgeball Evolution, the live action adaptation of the popular anime that is infamous for ignoring every essential detail of its subject material. Fortunately, most people have forgotten about this debacle already and are ready to see Emmy Rossum try her hand at a comic book role.

Given that neither of the big two comic book movie universes have a role for Emmy Rossum at the moment, the possibilities are endless. To remain concise, however, the following are just seven characters from within the pages of Marvel and DC that I had in mind.

Rogue

For many fans of the X-Men movie franchise, Anna Paquin will always be Rogue, but, if you are like me, it is a thrill to learn how the MCU will redefine a character for a new era and a new audience. As usual, the key to a successful recasting is the getting the best actor and Emmy Rossum, best known for playing the feisty de facto leader of a family who turn everything they touch into tragedy, would be a fantastic candidate to play the mutant who falls under the same description. Not to mention, Rossum's versatile acting range would come in handy for scenes in which Rogue uses her abilities of power absorption to assume the personality of whoever she touches.

Black Orchid

A lesser-known character who would be an intriguing addition to the DCEU is Black Orchid, a woman who possesses many of the more common superhero abilities of flight, invulnerability, and super strength, but her most important, and unique, talent is disguise. The Black Orchid is an alias that has been passed down from person to person for decades, and more recently reinvented as a member of Justice League Dark, which would make J.J. Abrams' upcoming HBO Max series the perfect opportunity for an introduction. However, based on a 2009 interview with MTV, Emmy Rossum would most likely be interested in adapting Neil Gaiman's much darker interpretation that reimagines the character as plant/human hybrid with powers of seduction, almost like if Poison Ivy switched sides.

She-Hulk

Amid the announcement of a live action Disney+ exclusive series putting the spotlight on Jennifer Walters, better known as She-Hulk, fans were quick to provide their own suggestions of who should play Bruce Banner's more even-tempered cousin. Among those names was none other than Emmy Rossum, who has also exhibited the same kind of spunk and confidence that it would take to pull off the Marvel heroine throughout much of her career. She even bears an appearance that could match the character perfectly, of course, with the help of a full-body makeup procedure and, perhaps, hitting the gym a little harder than usual.

Talia Al Ghul

On the other hand, there is sure to be somebody who would love to see Emmy Rossum take on a the role of a more grounded and insidious character of comic book lore. Furthermore, there must be a great deal of Batman fans who are curious to see if and how Talia Al Ghul (the daughter of Bruce Wayne's trainer turned enemy Ra's Al Ghul and the mother of his son, Damian) could fit into Matt Reeves' upcoming reboot if it successfully kickstarts a new franchise. Well, if we are to expect the unmerciful assassin in Robert Pattinson's future as the Dark Knight, what better chance to see Emmy Rossum play a villain is there?

Lady Deadpool

Speaking of characters with awkward romantic ties to other comic book heroes, in an alternate reality within the Marvel Multiverse known as Earth-3010, there exists a woman named Wanda Wilson, a Canadian mercenary who became the subject of a experiment that dramatically changed her appearance and her biological makeup to become indestructible anti-hero with a twisted sense of humor. In other words, yes, she is literally the female version of Deadpool, right down to adopting the alias "Lady Deadpool," but there is still more to her than a ponytail protruding from her mask to help her standout. In fact, with Emmy Rossum in the role, giving her the chance to show off the furthest extent of her comedic talent, watching her play off Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth in a future film would be an absolute joy.

Oracle

Not everybody in the Batfamily wears a costume, such as one of the Dark Knight's most important allies, Oracle: the alias Barbara Gordon assumes after the Joker's bullet paralyzes her, leaving her to help protect Gotham City with a computer. While this character, who was given the live action treatment once before on the WB series Birds of Prey (not to be confused with the Harley Quinn-led 2020 movie), would not give Emmy Rossum the opportunity to be part of the action of a DC film, casting her would help ensure that this iteration of Barbara is depicted with the right kind of emotional depth. That being said, one might wonder why I do not just suggest Rossum to play Batgirl, Barbara's original alter ego, and the main reason is that I have another, and arguably better, idea for the actress.

Batwoman

Many were shocked by the news that Ruby Rose stepped down from the title role of Arrowverse spin-off Batwoman after just one season playing the Gotham City hero and LGBTQ+ comic book icon. Now that The CW intends to replace the Australian model and actress with a whole new character to assume the Batwoman alias, Emmy Rossum might have room to be a series regular again. Better yet, and probably more likely, she could reinvent the character of Kate Kane for the big screen to finally bring her irresistible personality to a role that literally kicks butt.

Emmy Rossum did not just star on Shameless; she also directed two episodes of the series before deciding to exit the dramedy in 2018. There are many fond memories that Rossum took with her, and among them was a trick she used to direct. Rossum has revealed how she used LEGO to figure out how to direct certain scenes of Shameless.

Yes, LEGO. When you think about it, it makes a ton of sense to utilize the helpful toy. Using them clearly worked out for Emmy Rossum. She has gone onto direct an episode of Amazon’s anthology Modern Love, so directing is clearly something that she remains interested in career-wise. On prepping to direct Shameless, Rossum told The Off Camera Show:

It sounds complicated but it evidently helped Emmy Rossum in preparing to direct. I have to think that if Rossum watched The Lego Movie franchise, she did so with a whole different perspective than some of us. Rossum explained some of the ins-and-outs of filming those intricate scenes that populate Shameless. The truth is, there is a lot that goes into making them flow flawlessly.

In case you were wondering, the first Shameless episode that Emmy Rossum brought her directing magic to was Season 7, Episode 4 entitled “I Am A Storm.” In the interview, Rossum pointed out the necessity of blocking the shots with LEGO beforehand because she was in the scene. Ah, the days before Rossum’s Fiona left.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Shameless would be ending after only one season without Emmy Rossum under its belt. The goal is to bring the show to a high-flying conclusion after its considerable run, which will come to an end with Season 11. In a silver lining, it can conclude knowing that Rossum directed two episodes and used the creative trick of LEGO to do so.

Fans are waiting and hoping for Emmy Rossum to make some sort of comeback before Shameless comes to an end. For the on-screen portion, Shameless’ showrunner has sounded uncertain of whether Rossum’s busy schedule would allow for a Fiona redux. She has not been standing around tinkering with LEGO since leaving the Showtime series.

For now, fans have her performance and those two Shameless episodes she directed. Emmy Rossum also directed the Season 8 episode “Frank’s Northern Shuttle Express.” It is worth noting that Rossum also stepped behind the camera (possibly with LEGO) for TNT’s Animal Kingdom back in Season 2. It sounds like directing is something she is pretty enthusiastic about.

For all the Shameless fans who watched the entirety of Season 10 (which concluded in January) without being able to avoid thinking about Emmy Rossum's absence, there's finally something to celebrate. NBCUniversal's upcoming streaming service Peacock released the first trailer for Rossum's first big Shameless follow-up, which is a dramatized look at the life of famed L.A. socialite and entertainer Angelyne. What isn't so dramatized, however, are Rossum's persuasive skills while rocking Angelyne's signature deep cleavage and pink outfits.

Co-starring Breeders and Black Panther vet Martin Freeman and Rocketman's Charlie Rowe, among others, Angelyne is a miniseries that looks like it'll lean lovingly hard into the real-life escapades of the endlessly confident billboard icon. Check out the trailer below!

Where to start, where to start? Well, for those who are unaware of what any of this is even about, Angelyne originally went by the name Ronia Tamar Goldberg, but after arriving in Los Angeles in her early 30s, she became known to millions just by her single pseudonym. As depicted in the trailer by Emmy Rossum's aw-shucks suggestion, Angelyne's rise to fame happened via billboards that were posted around L.A. basically just showing off Angelyne's figure. That's really all it takes sometimes...or all the time.

One can easily imagine how many people at the time were quite shocked to see such a curvy display so high up and available for everyone's peepers. Lots of people making this move, no doubt, only with far less cool sunglasses.

With those big lovely eyes leading the way, Emmy Rossum is presumably going to cover many of the highlight moments during Angelyne's time in the limelight. Her entertainment career technically started in the late 1970s with her burgeoning music career that was heavily promoted by posters and flyers, which preceded her shift to billboards. The first one went up in February 1984, and before long, both her music and acting career had seen a boost that kept chugging along for years.

The trailer doesn't show a whole lot of what viewers can expect to see from Emmy Rossum, at least beyond heavy makeup and other pink things. Even in that short amount of time, though, Rossum does a great job of displaying why Angelyne was worth the attention. I definitely hope Angelyne delivers some stellar music sequences that ooze uncynical '80s magic.

For anyone who thinks that there isn't something to get excited about with Emmy Rossum's Angelyne, you can high-kick those opinions to the curb.

Created by former Six Feet Under and True Blood writer/Producer Nancy Oliver, Angelyne will make its debut on Peacock at a currently undisclosed date. Peacock is still set to make its long-awaited debut in May, where customers will be able to stream former NBC hits such as Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock. However, the service may end up debuting its original shows such as the Saved by the Bell revival later than originally intended. Based on the British series of the same name, which notably ran for a much briefer amount of time, the William H. Macy-led series has been a staple of the cable channel's programming. But with over a decade of episodes behind it, Shameless' solid run is coming to a close. And over the course of 120+ episodes, the hit show has seen several major cast members come and go, with Emmy Rossum as the standout.

Here are the reasons why different actors left Shameless during its run, from Karen actress Laura Slade Wiggins to Fiona actress Emmy Rossum.

Emmy Rossum (Fiona Gallagher)

As Fiona Gallagher, the oldest sibling who took on most of the responsibilities in the multi-child house, Emmy Rossum played her most well-known role to date in Shameless, and it was certainly the one she played the longest too. In August 2018, however, Rossum revealed in an emotional Facebook post that she was making her exit from Shameless following its ninth season. The character of Fiona was taken off the series when she received a large sum of money and realized the Gallagher family grew up. Fiona wrote the family a $50,000 check and flew out of Chicago.

Having been a core cast member for Shameless' nearly decade-long run, the actress noted that she felt immensely grateful for this opportunity, and that she "never realized how much" she "craved the kind of continuity" that she was given by Shameless' cast and crew throughout the program's extensive storyline, but she felt it was time to say goodbye. While Emmy Rossum didn't specify a concrete reason why she wanted to bow out when she did, that decision did follow a contract dispute in late 2016 regarding how her pay related to co-star William H. Macy, who earned more than she did in previous years. Nevertheless, that issue was resolved shortly thereafter and didn't seem to have been directly involved with her decision. According to the show's producers, Rossum left to pursue the next chapter of her career. Speaking of, she is currently filming a role in the upcoming Peacock drama series, Angelyne, which comes from show creator Sam Esmail, Rossum's Emmy-winning husband.

Joan Cusack (Sheila Jackson)

In her Emmy-winning role as Sheila Jackson, Joan Cusack played a memorable part in Shameless as the kind and caring (if somewhat absent-minded) mother of Karen. Cusack took on the role after future Oscar-winner Allison Janney, who played the role in the first edit of the pilot before leaving the series due to commitments elsewhere. Certainly, it worked out, as Cusack received a wealth of acclaim for her excellent (as per usual) performance in Shameless, garnering five consecutive Emmy nominations before finally winning in 2015. But in Season 5, Sheila Jackson was written off of Shameless, with Sheila leaving Chicago and exploring the countryside in an RV after Frank accidentally blew up her house.

Beyond it possibly being a natural time to wrap up Sheila's story and return the focus on the Gallaghers, there isn't a reported reason for why Joan Cusack was taken off Shameless. There were grain-of-salt rumors that the actress initially joined the series because she knew it'd only be a limited commitment, and that she started to back away when her character was given more to do. Since her tenure on Shameless, the always-great Joan Cusack has been seen (and heard) in several different movies and TV shows, including Instant Family, Toy Story 4, Let It Snow, The Stinky & Dan Show, Klaus, and Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events. It should also be noted that in the recent past, Cusack has hinted at a possible Shameless return, though that reprisal has not materialized just yet.

Justin Chatwin (Steve Wilton/Jimmy Lishman/Jack)

Playing Jimmy Lishman, who also went by the names Steve Wilton and "Jack," Justin Chatwin played a prominent part in Shameless Seasons 1-3. As the love interest of Fiona Gallagher, and one who went to great lengths to woo her, he played a tumultuous role with his various misdeeds, deceptions, and his presumed death in Season 3. Jimmy did briefly return in Season 5 before Fiona finally decided to end things for good.

Given the turbulent nature of their relationship the writers behind Shameless decided to end the character's story after this brief appearance in Season 5. In an interview with THR, Justin Chatwin admitted that he wasn't expecting to return to the series after his character's presumed death at the end of Season 3, but Emmy Rossum and fans reportedly wanted to bring the character back for more emotional closure. It appears that Chatwin's time on the series has ultimately drawn to a close, with that Season 5 return serving more as a chance for Fiona to show her growth and progression as a character. Plus, with Emmy Rossum no longer on Shameless, it'd make little sense to bring Jimmy back now. Since his time on Shameless, Chatwin has starred in a number of films and TV shows, and was most recently seen in Netflix's Another Life.

Laura Slade Wiggins (Karen Jackson)

Throughout the first two seasons of Shameless, Laura Slade Wiggins played the recurring role of Karen Jackson, Lip's friend-with-benefits who found herself suffering frontal-lobe brain damage during the end of her time on the show. When we last saw her, Karen was taken to Arizona to be tended to by faith healers. There is a moment in Season 5 where the character is referenced by Sheila, but that's the last we see or hear of Karen Jackson in Shameless.

Given the severity of her character's condition, it seems unlikely that Karen Jackson will return to Shameless in its final season. When it comes to her departure from the series, Laura Slade Wiggins speculated in an interview with Talk Nerdy With Us that the writers wanted to return the focus back on the Gallagher family, which might explain why her character was taken off the show altogether. Since her time on Shameless, Laura Slade Wiggins has appeared in a few high-profile movies, including Rings and 20th Century Women, as well as some popular television shows, such as Chicago P.D., CSI, and Law & Order: SVU.

Zach McGowan (Jody Silverman)

As Karen Jackson's husband Jody Silverman, Zach McGowan first appeared in Shameless' second season before he became a main character in Season 3. But his appearances on the Showtime series came to a close when Karen left for Arizona. Given the decision to take Karen off the show, it made sense that Jody Silverman would also leave with his wife in her time of need, thus keeping Zach McGowan off the show.

Following his time appearing on Shameless, McGowan has had several big roles, including Dracula Untold, The 100, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Walking Dead, and L.A. Finest. More likely than not, however, television viewers know him best as Charles Vane on Black Sails, which is often considered his most famous role — outside of Shameless, of course.

Emily Bergl (Sammi Slott)

Introduced as the eldest daughter of Frank Gallagher, Emily Bergl's Sammi Slott played a key role in the fourth and notably fifth seasons of Shameless, as part of the storyline surrounding Frank needing a liver transplant. Alas, her tenure on Shameless didn't extend past this. At the end of Season 4, Sammi Slott is incarcerated after she tries to shoot Mickey. The last time audiences saw the character, Sammi was spending hard time in the slammer, and we haven't heard too much from her since then.

It's no secret that the character wasn't especially well-liked, with even the Gallaghers themselves turning on Sammi before she got locked up. There was never an official reason given for why Sammi (and Emily Bergl )were taken off Shameless, though the actress didn't have trouble finding work afterward. Since starring on Shameless, Bergl has been keeping busy in a number of popular and acclaimed television and streaming shows, including (but not limited to) Law & Order: SVU, Scandal, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, You, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Mindhunter, How to Get Away with Murder, American Crime and more.

Emma Greenwell (Mandy Milkovich)

In joining Shameless as Mandy Milkovich, actress Emma Greenwell took over for Jane Levy, who played the part in Season 1. Mandy is, of course, Mickey's sister who eventually forms a friendship with Ian from Seasons 2 through 6. It was in the sixth season of Shameless, though, that Greenwell served merely as a guest star, where it was revealed that Mandy had become an escort after leaving for Indiana. After one of her clients died, Mandy fled once again, this time to an unknown destination.

Though the writers surprised viewers by bringing Mandy back for that brief appearance in Season 6, the character hasn't been seen on Shameless since, and it looks unlikely that she'll return. Similar to Jimmy's brief "hello and goodbye" from Shameless, it seems that Mandy's brief Season 6 interlude was mostly used as a chance to bring official closure to this long-time character — even though Mandy's last exit from Shameless was notably more depressing and arguably unsatisfying. In an interview with Cosmopolitan following Mandy's surprise return, Emma Greenwell admitted she isn't sure if her character will return to Shameless again, though her lack of appearances since suggests the writers have wrapped with Mandy. After leaving, Greenwell joined the acclaimed Hulu drama The Path and was last seen on TV in Starz's The Rook.

Isidora Goreshter (Svetlana Fisher)

A Russian prostitute who had a complicated history with the main characters, Svetlana Fisher was initially a guest star role for Isidora Goreshter when she first appeared in Season 3. The role grew into a recurring role from Seasons 4-6, and Goreshter became a series regular for 7 and 8. Alas, Isidora was written out of the series after the eighth season. When we last saw Svetlana, she'd married a senile old man and finally moved out of Kev and Veronica's house.

It would appear that Goreshter's exit is a classic example of the show writers not knowing what else to do with Svetlana and deciding to let her go for good. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Goreshter surprisingly admitted that she wanted her character to suffer a dramatic death, but the writers didn't want that to happen in order to leave the door open in case they decided to bring Svetlana back again. She hasn't been on Shameless since, however, but Goreshter has appeared in other popular dramas such as Grey's Anatomy and Condor.

To be sure, these fine actors don't account for every single character who ever came and went on Shameless, but they're among the cream of the crop. It's never fun to see some of your favorite characters leave, though it seems like most of the show's exits were due to storyline ebbs and flows, as opposed to there being lots of drama behind the scenes. With 20 seasons, Law and Order is one of the longest running dramas of all-time. It spun several spin-offs, including--the still going strong--Law and Order: SVU. Law and Order helped make procedural dramas more popular and it made the cast very recognizable. It even launched the career of some very famous Hollywood names.

Claire Danes

In 1992, two years before My So Called Life would air, Claire Danes landed her first major acting gig: an episode of Law and Order. Claire Danes’ Law and Order episode was the Season 3 premiere. She was barely a teen on her Law and Order episode where she played a 15-year-old tied into a secret prostitution ring. Her displaying so much talent at such a young age likely helped Claire Danes’ accelerate her acting career.

The short-lived My So Called Life gave Claire Danes’ career a major boost. She then went on to star in many motion pictures, including Romeo + Juliet, The Hours, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and Stardust. Danes gained even more recognition and praise in 2011 when she landed the lead role of Carrie Mathison in Homeland. But before all of that, she was on Law & Order.

Adam Driver

Adam Driver appeared in Law and Order in 2010, during Law and Order’s final season (Season 20, Episode 15) “Brilliant Disguise.” This Law and Order role came two years prior to him landing his breakout Girls role. Law and Order was one of Adam Driver’s first screen roles. In his episode he played a lab technician accused of murdering a secret escort. He had theater roles before Law and Order, but he had only appeared on one TV show and a short film before the police drama. Appearing on such a massively popular show might have help give him the confidence to audition for even bigger roles.

Since 2009, Adam Driver has taken on a variety of stage and screen roles. He has blended big blockbuster performances, like his role as Kylo Ren in the new Star Wars trilogy, with an array of arthouse film projects like Frances Ha, BlacKkKlansman, and The Report. Adam Driver had a very successful 2019, appearing in the critically acclaimed Marriage Story, and receiving his first Best Lead Actor Academy Award nomination for the same film.

Sam Rockwell

Sam Rockwell played two different characters in multiple episodes of Law and Order. His first episode was Season 2's “Intolerance,” and his second episode was Season 3" 21st episode, “Manhood.” in "Manhood," Rockwell plays an officer who doesn't show up when a fellow officer needs him. This leads to that officer's death and accusations of homophobia on their police force. In "Intolerance," he plays a member of a family accused of murdering a Chinese-American student to help one of the boys win a science award. Sam Rockwell had at least a dozen screen roles before appearing in Law and Order. However, it was still quite early in his career. Rockwell had only been consistently booking gigs for four years when he had his Law and Order premiere.

Since the early '90s, Sam Rockwell has forged a very diverse acting career--appearing in major motion pictures like The Green Mile, Charlie’s Angels, Iron Man 2, and Seven Psychopaths. In 2018, Sam Rockwell won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. He has also appeared in three recent Academy Award nominated movies, Vice, Richard Jewell, and Jojo Rabbit. In 2019, Sam Rockwell also appeared in the limited series Fosse/Verdon.

Sebastian Stan

Sebastian Stan had only appeared in one thing prior to his Law and Order debut in 2003. He appeared in Season 13's “Sheltered.” In the episode, Stan played a boy abducted and raised by his abuser. Modern Family’s Ty Burrell played his abuser. This role led to a steady stream of small roles until he landed his 2007 Gossip Girl role.

Sebastian Stan appeared in the hit TV series Gossip Girl and Once Upon a Time. However, most people know him for his roles in the Marvel movie franchise. Sebastian Stan plays Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier. He’s been playing Bucky Barnes in the Marvel franchise since 2011, and later this year he’ll have his own Disney+ and Marvel series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson appeared on Law and Order Season 1, Episode 14, “The Violence of Summer" as Defense Attorney Louis Taggert. He had only made limited television appearances before his Law and Order episode. However, he had already been appearing in films for nearly 20 years before the show. Samuel L Jackson at least appeared in over fifteen films from 1972 to 1992, including films like Do The Right Thing, Coming to America, and Jungle Fever. It was definitely not a career-making role, but it was before Samuel L. Jackson became one of the most recognized names in cinema.

Samuel L. Jackson has appeared in nearly 200 films and television shows. His most famous work includes the Marvel movies, The Incredibles, the Star Wars prequels, Kill Bill II, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Pulp Fiction, and School Daze.

Sarah Paulson

In 1994, Law and Order was Sarah Paulson’s first screen acting gig. She appeared in Season 5, Episode 4, “Family Values.” Sarah Paulson played a teen who claimed that she was having an affair with her murdered mother’s new husband. A year later, she landed a series regular role on American Gothic.

Sarah Paulson appeared in Bird Box, Ocean’s Eight, The Goldfinch, and Glass, but most people know her from her work with Ryan Murphy. Sarah Paulson has appeared in most seasons of American Horror Story and a few seasons of American Crime Story. Ryan Murphy and Paulson also will team up once again for a Netflix series about the infamous One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest character Nurse Ratched.

Ellen Pompeo

Law and Order was Ellen Pompeo’s first TV gig. She appeared in Season 6, Episode 16, “Savior” and Season 10's “Fools for Love.” The first episode involved a case about a man being accused of murdering his wife and son. The Season 10 episode involved a man accused of killing and raping his girlfriend’s sister and another victim. Prior to her first Law and Order episode, Ellen Pompeo had only appeared in one short film. She had a few movies and TV roles before her 2000 return to Law and Order.

Grey’s Anatomy fans best know Ellen Pompeo for her lead role as Dr. Meredith Grey. She has also appeared in Life of the Party, Friends, and Catch Me If You Can.

Allison Janney

Allison Janney had appeared on As the World Turns and Morton & Hayes along with a few movies before making her Law and Order appearances. She appeared in 1992 and 1994. The first episode Season 2, Episode 12, “Star Struck,” and the second episode was Season 4's “Old Friends.” In "Old Friends," Allison Janney plays a character scared to testify about a murder because it could lead to dangerous consequences for her. In "Star Struck," she plays someone interviewed about a murdered soap opera actress.

Allison Janney is an Academy Award and Emmy winning actress. She has appeared on hit series and critically acclaimed movies; her list of work includes 10 Things I Hate About You, The Hours, Finding Nemo, The West Wing, Masters of Sex, I, Tonya, and Mom.

Emmy Rossum

Emmy Rossum appeared on Law and Order when she was only a preteen. She played a young girl who became the target of a female circumcision. This Law and Order episode, "Ritual," aired during Season 8. This was Emmy Rossum’s first TV acting gig, but the following year she would appear in several screen projects.

Emmy Rossum is best known for her role as Fiona Gallagher in Shameless. She has also appeared in the films Mystic River, The Day After Tomorrow, and The Phantom of the Opera.

Vera Farmiga

Vera Farmiga appeared in Law and Order Season 8, Episode 12, “Expert.” She plays a character accused of trying to murder an expert witness in her father’s case. Prior to Law and Order, Farmiga had only appeared in two other on-screen things. One was a short lived TV show starring Heath Ledger called Roar and the other a TV movie called Rose Hill.

Vera Farmiga is an Academy Award nominated actress, best known for her role as Nora Bates in Bates Motel. Vera Farmiga has also appeared in Up in the Air, The Conjuring series, When They See Us, and The Departed.

Philip Seymour Hoffman

Philip Seymour Hoffman made his screen debut with Law and Order. He appeared in Season 1, Episode 14, “The Violence of Summer.” He plays one of the men involved in a rape case. Samuel L. Jackson also appeared in this episode.

Philip Seymour Hoffman was an Academy Award winning actor who appeared in The Hunger Games movies, The Master, Almost Famous, Doubt, and Capote. He won his Best Lead Actor Academy Award for his role in Capote, and he received three Best Supporting Actor nominations for The Master, Doubt, and Charlie Wilson’s War.

Fans were stunned when Shameless star Emmy Rossum decided to take her leave of the long-running series after Season 9. They were obviously worried that with the heart of the Gallagher clan gone that the show wouldn't be brought back, but a Season 10 renewal was granted. Now, though, we know that Shameless will, indeed, end with the Season 11 finale, which will land on Showtime at some point later this year. So, audiences want to know: will Rossum be back at all for the final season? Unfortunately, the answer isn't as cut and dry as anyone would like.

Shameless aired its Season 10 finale last night, and while a lot of things came to a nice sort-of end, there are plenty of places that showrunner John Wells and his team of writers can take the Gallaghers (and their friends) in the last season. But, the biggest question on everyone's minds will probably be whether or not anything will lead to a return from former star Emmy Rossum during Season 11. Here's what Wells had to say when asked if getting Rossum back before the end is a priority:

Well, this answer from John Wells, who spoke with TVLine, is certainly not of the more-Emmy-Rossum-on-Shameless dream crushing variety, but I think we can all see why I mentioned above that it wouldn't be a simple one, either. It's pretty clear that, even though Rossum and the show seem to have parted on very good terms, getting her back on Shameless, even for just a teeny surprise guest spot, will be a wait-and-see situation for the show, as much as it is for fans.

John Wells admitted that, had he his druthers, he never would have had to figure out a way to write out Emmy Rossum's Fiona in the first place, and that rings true considering how she left the show. Instead of having Fiona burn alive in a fire, overdose on drugs, get caught in some very illegal gun play or succumb to her injuries after a drunk driving incident, the long-suffering (sometimes through her own fault) Gallagher care-taker got a windfall and decided to use the cash to take off and leave Chicago's South Side (and her nutty family) behind.

With the notable and quite obvious exception of her dad, Frank, Fiona was thanked by the many family members she sacrificed for throughout her young life in order to try giving everyone a more stable childhood and actual promising future. Basically, Fiona was fed up and needed a break, and we know that she's been in contact with some of her folks since leaving, so, technically, she could pop back up in Chicago at any time.

As John Wells noted, Emmy Rossum is working on other things for the foreseeable future. Currently, Rossum is starring in the steamy story of Los Angeles' famous billboard queen in the eponymous Angelyne, so her schedule is likely pretty tight right now. With Shameless wrapping up this year, it'll probably be a bit of a struggle to get her on set before all is said and done, but it's not really impossible.

If you're worried, though, about Shameless ending without more Fiona sightings and think it would negatively impact the show, John Wells can at least put you at ease on that front. Here's what he had to say about whether or not he thinks the Gallaghers need her for their ending to have some real closure::

That's a very zen response, isn't it? Fans might be desperate for Emmy Rossum to bring Fiona back before the finale rolls credits for the last time, but it's good to know that John Wells feels it isn't an absolute necessity in order for Shameless to get the send off it deserves after eleven seasons.

Fans of Showtime's debauched family dramedy Shameless, were quite shocked a couple of years ago when original cast member and star Emmy Rossum announced she would be leaving her role as default family leader Fiona Gallagher behind. Her time on the show ended with Season 9, and the series was renewed for Season 10, even though fans would be Fiona-less for the duration. Well, it was just announced that Shameless has been cancelled after the currently-airing season, but there is still some good news to be had for those who love watching the Gallagher clan try (and usually fail) to fix their lives.

Fortunately, while Shameless is, indeed, ending, the series finale won't come in a few weeks when Season 10 is over, as the show has been renewed for an 11th and final season. Even better, fans won't have to wait a whole year for the Gallagher's last run of shenanigans to commence; Season 11 will begin airing this summer. The big announcement was made recently at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.

I'm sure all the Shameless fans out there will undoubtedly be sore over the loss of one of their favorite shows, but they can at least take heart in the fact that things won't end abruptly with Season 10, which will air its finale on January 26. With the series debuting its finale season so soon after the current season is done airing, those behind Shameless are probably already working on just how to wrap up the arcs of more than a dozen nutty and damaged, but still sorta lovable, characters.

The most recent episode saw several Gallagher family members and friends considering some major questions that will impact their futures in some intriguing ways. Ways which could easily help bring somewhat tidy conclusions to the stories we've been watching develop since 2011. Of course, I say "somewhat tidy," because nothing is ever simple with this crazy clan, as evidenced by...well, pretty much anything any of them have ever done. And, this includes Emmy Rossum's Season 9 exit as Fiona.

While nothing so dramatic as a Fiona dying happened, the default matriarch did get a pretty happy ending, being suddenly flush with enough cash to leave her dysfunctional family behind, and take a trip to parts unknown to clear hear head after decades of drama and finally commit to figuring out her own life. We don't know yet if Fiona will make an appearance during the final season of Shameless, but most of her family was appreciative of all the sacrifices she made for them and glad to see her take time for herself, meaning that they'll be welcoming should she return.

And, sure, I say that knowing that being welcomed by the Gallaghers isn't necessarily all one might think it's cracked up to be. But, such is the life of a Chicago South Sider, I suppose. You take what you can get when you can get it.

Emmy Rossum's final run as Fiona did, obviously, leave room for her to come back, and those behind the show are certainly up for writing Fiona back into the show, should Rossum be on board, to help conclude any Gallagher storylines. So, we'll just have to wait and see if Fiona will come back from her sojourn refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to tackle family issues again, at least for a little bit.

Emmy Rossum was a staple of premium cable for the better part of a decade thanks to her role as Fiona on Showtime's Shameless, but a steamy new image of Rossum for her new streaming series proves she's boldly left her old stomping grounds behind. Rossum will star in the original series Angelyne for NBC's upcoming streaming service, fittingly titled Peacock, and she shared a photo of her new look:

Hello, Emmy Rossum! Let it not be said that Rossum (who shared the image via Twitter) will be typecast in showbiz just because she spent so many years in one role on Shameless. Based on this first photo alone, Angelyne of Angelyne will be a pretty far cry from Fiona of Shameless. Interestingly, Rossum has actually been attached to this project since way back in 2017.

At the time, not a whole lot was known about the project, and Universal Cable Productions didn't even announce a network. Now that NBC has a streaming service on the way, Angelyne won't need a network at all! Considering some of the potential subject matter, Angelyne may be best-suited to a platform without the restrictions that come from airing on traditional TV networks.

So, what will Angelyne be about? Executive produced by Emmy Rossum, husband and Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, and Chad Hamilton, THR reports Angelyne will be a limited series telling the story of the infamous blonde bombshell billboard diva of Los Angeles, known as Angelyne.

After a Hollywood Reporter exposé, Angelyne was identified as Renee Goldberg, born in Poland in 1950 as the daughter of Holocaust survivors. She and her parents moved to Los Angeles, where she would attend high school. Her "paper trail" ends with her time in high school, but she became famous for appearing on L.A. billboards and driving a pink Corvette.

The billboards weren't advertising anything, but simply showed Angelyne posing suggestively with her name in large letters. Angelyne's story is finally being brought to television after being shopped to cable and streaming outlets before landing at Peacock.

The new streamer hasn't announced a premiere date for the series just yet, but a Twitter response to Emmy Rossum's post sheds some light, saying this:

Well, that may not be a precise date, but at least it's proof that Peacock plans to launch Angelyne in 2020! The streaming service itself is slated to launch in April 2020 as one of the many new streaming services that will rival the previous big three of Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. Peacock is costing Netflix some of its popular content, including Friends and The Office. When it comes to originals like Angelyne, Peacock will also host a Battlestar Galactica reboot, a Saved By the Bell revival with a partially new cast, and more.

Emmy Rossum’s Fiona Gallagher may not be appearing in Season 10 of Shameless, but that doesn’t mean that the largely dependable sister has been forgotten. However, since Season 10 is the first time the Gallaghers will be facing new hardships without her, executive producer John Wells has come out to explain how Shameless is handling the family’s drama in Fiona’s absence.

In the Shameless Season 10 premiere, Fiona’s sister, Debbie (Emma Kenney) has taken over responsibility for the Gallagher family finances, while Lip (Jeremy Allen White) and girlfriend Tami (Kate Miner) welcomed a newborn son after a complicated birth. While Fiona had always been there for her siblings in their time of need, John Wells wanted to make clear that Fiona didn’t abandon her family and that’s why her presence was so embedded into the premiere. (A good thing, since Miner has been promoted to series regular, meaning Tami and Lips' fun is just beginning in full.)

The way the writers handled everything in the Season 10 premiere was very true to reality. After all, family members don’t have to be extremely nearby to "be there for you" in the bad times. In fact, the core thrust of Season 10 is seeing how the Gallagher family will move on without Fiona, as well as what that means for all of them is at the core of the show this season, John Wells told TV Guide.

Last year, Emmy Rossum announced her departure from the long-running Showtime series, sending fans into a frenzy. After hitting several speed bumps throughout the season, Fiona decided in the Season 9 finale, Fiona, decided that she wouldn’t be able to change if she stayed in the same place. So, she told her family about her decision to leave, booked a one-way flight, and left without attending her goodbye party. Her farewell was a tearjerker, though, that’s for sure.

Saying goodbye sucks, and there were likely very few Shameless fans who went into the Season 9 finale pumped that Emmy Rossum's Fiona Gallagher was making a permanent exit. Thankfully, executive producer John Wells (who also wrote and directed "Found") had a mostly happy ending in mind for the flush-with-funds Fiona, who said some important goodbyes before hopping on a plane headed to some still-unknown destination.

Here, John Welles explains why Shameless took this route with closing out Fiona's story for Emmy Rossum's swan song.

The biggest element to pull out of that is, obviously, that John Welles and others on Shameless' creative team are more than willing to welcome Emmy Rossum back in the future, should the actress choose to return. Killing off Fiona, or putting her in some irreversibly terrible situation, would have made it a lot harder to welcome her back in the future, assuming Showtime keeps Shameless going for several more years.

Even beyond any potential future returns, though, the goal was also to give Fiona some justice for all of the hard work and dedication she put into her job as the sometimes reluctant matriarch of this dysfunctional AF family. Many of her formative years were spent making sure everyone else's formative years weren't disastrous, so if anyone deserves the chance to take a long vacation and go hard on retail therapy, it's Fiona.

Wonderfully for Debbie, Fiona gifted her sister half of the $100,000, which will likely lead to some tricky situations in the future. But then there was Frank...

While her goodbye with Lip was one in which viewers could read how appreciative he was for everything that Fiona had done for him over the years, Frank and Fiona's final moments together were far more strained. John Welles talked with TVLine about why Frank couldn't bring himself to offer up a mature and fatherly goodbye.

Truth be told, anyone who expected emotional fireworks from William H. Macy's Frank was clearly just fooling themselves. The man is not always so eloquent when it comes to verbal cues.

Elsewhere in the finale, Fiona also shares a particularly powerful goodbye with the jailed Ian, who tells Fiona to go as far away from that place as possible, and that he'd always be there for her. That scene had an interesting slice of real-world importance, with actor Cameron Monaghan having made his own exit from Shameless in 2018, though he'll be returning in Season 10.

And now for that all-important question that most viewers were left with when the credits rolled: where in the world is Fiona going? She told Ian it might be somewhere a bit nearer the equator than their Chicago digs, but nothing got confirmed during the episode, and so viewers were left with a cliffhanger-lite mystery about the next steps in Fiona's journey.

As it happens, her destination wasn't meant to be an unknown detail at all. Fans were actually supposed to discover where she was going during a conversation that got cut from the episode. Thankfully, though, we'll all be finding out next season. In Welles' words:

In some ways, it's good to learn that her destination isn't some huge narrative hook that would keep viewers worried about Fiona's fate and safety in the years when Emma Rossum is not around the show. On the other hand, it'd be nice to have already learned that she's moving to a place where her biggest worry will be how intense her afternoon full-body massages are. She deserves a break.

Shameless fans are getting a big break between episodes, with Season 9 now said and done, and Season 10 not set to debut until later in 2019. In the meantime, there are lots of other shows on the midseason TV schedule to keep viewers busy.

How they manage without her and to what extent fans will be willing to embrace a Fiona-less Shameless, will take time to find out. Romance is coming! Amazon's upcoming anthology series, Modern Love, is going to be a love affair that features some very high-profile stars. Among them are Tina Fey, Ocean 8' and A Star is Born enthusiast, Anne Hathaway, as well as Shameless' Emmy Rossum.

The list of those signing on includes a stunning assortment of movie and television regulars. Those mentioned are just a few of the ones who have signed on for Amazon's upcoming series. Emmy Rossum will not be seen in front of the camera though.

The departing Shameless star will be taking part in Modern Love behind-the-scenes. The actress has signed on to direct an episode of the series. It will not be her first time calling the shots. Rossum has directed episodes of Shameless as well as an installment of TNT's Animal Kingdom.

Also taking on directing duties is Catastrophe's Sharon Horgan. As for Tina Fey, she will be ready for her close-up.

Tina Fey has signed on to star in an installment of the anthology. Nothing was shared about her character or storyline. We do know who she will be sharing the screen with, though. That would be John Slattery, which sounds interesting. Slattery's participation keeps him active on Amazon. He can already be seen in the streamer's anthology, The Romanoffs.

Ozark's Julie Garner, who can currently be seen in Bravo's Dirty John, has also joined the cast of Modern Love. Romance is something that has not been part of Ruth's life for two seasons on Ozark, but, maybe, Season 3 can change that. Julie Garner's fellow Netflix alum, Cristin Milioti will also be looking for Modern Love. The Black Mirror breakout will also star in the series.

Also signing on for the anthology series is Oscar-nominee Dev Patel, who starred on the HBO series The Newsroom from 2012-2014. Joining Modern Love will mark his latest television credit. Much like installments for the other actors listed here, Amazon did not reveal anything regarding the storyline of Patel's episode, but Dev Patel has proven throughout his career what a strong romantic lead he is. So, this is a hugely exciting accomplishment for the Amazon series.

Another exciting get for Modern Love is Kidding's Catherine Keener, who has also joined the cast in an unspecified role. The two-time Oscar nominee, who's also known for her work in Get Out, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Being John Malkovich and Forever, has over 80 credits across film and TV, so we have no doubt she'll bring a lot to the series.

Power's Brandon Victor Dixon and Bates Motel's Olivia Cooke have boarded the anthology series. Dixon plays Terry Silver on the Starz drama, while Cooke starred as Emma on the Psycho prequel series.

Andrew Scott, familiar to Sherlock fans for his portrayal of Sherlock's nemesis, Professor Moriarty, has boarded the TV show. Shea Whigham will also star in Modern Love, and he can currently be seen on Amazon's new series, Homecoming.

The Deuce's Gary Carr and Andy Garcia have also joined Modern Love. Carr stars as C.C. on the HBO porn drama, and has also been on Downton Abbey and Death in Paradise. Garcia, who's been working steadily in film and television since 1978, also has a history with HBO. He guest starred on the Dwayne Johnson-led series, Ballers, in 2016.

Kingsman: The Secret Service's Sofia Boutella and The Newsroom's John Gallagher, Jr. round out the cast. This, of course, means that two of the stars who have joined Modern Love also starred on The Newsroom -- Dev Patel and John Gallagher Jr.

So, what is this series that is drawing all of these stars? Modern Love is based on the New York Times column and weekly podcast of the same name, that tells "true stories of love, loss and redemption," which are often read by today's biggest stars. The first season will be comprised of eight, half-hour episodes, so, do not expect any feature-length installments like what you'd see on John Slattery's new show. Production on Modern Love is currently underway in New York.

A premiere date for Modern Love has not been set yet, so stay tuned. When it premieres, it will do so on Amazon Prime. While you wait to be swept off your feet by Modern Love, a lot of new content is arriving this fall and in the midseason.

Ahead of the launch of Shameless' ninth season, Emmy Rossum announced her impending exit from the dramedy. With the first half of Season 9 complete, it makes sense to wonder what is next for Rossum. He executive produces and directs the series, which Amazon green-lit for two seasons. The podcast the series is based on has also had two seasons to date. Who Emmy Rossum would potentially play in Homecoming Season 2 is also open to speculation. If she does end up starring on the series, it may be a while before fans see her take center stage. The first season of the psychological thriller has not even premiered yet.

As for collaborating, that is certainly not an issue for the couple. Sam Esmail directed his future wife in the 2014 film, Comet, opposite Justin Long. He and Rossum got married in 2017. So, things apparently went well. Plus, in his quote, Sam Esmail sounds more than excited about the idea of her being involved.

Time will tell if the actress ends up showing up on the series. In the meantime, the final half of her Shameless run has yet to air. The midseason paved the way for Fiona's final episodes.

It should be the beginning of an intriguing journey for Fiona. As of the midseason finale, her life is in shambles. Whether she can put herself on a path to happiness in seven episodes will be interesting to learn.

She also shared her appreciation for the stability being on the show for the past eight years has provided her. The actress also praised the writing of her "layered and dynamic" character. Rossum did not disclose an exact reason for her exit.

While fans savor their last season with Emmy Rossum and Fiona, the toughest season is arguably still on the horizon: the first one without her in it. They still have time before it comes to that. The first half of Season 9 will air this year, while the second half will premiere in 2019. As a result, fans will not know how Fiona exits Shameless until next year. Rossum will portray one of L.A.'s most mysterious figures, the billboard model Angelyne, in what sounds like a truly crazy show. As it should be, since there's little about the real-life story to be told in Angelyne that sounds normal.

Emmy Rossum is not only starring in Angelyne, but she's also executive producing this small screen look at the real life pop culture icon, who for 30 years was a mysterious model whose image appeared on billboards around L.A. The series is being developed and produced by Rossum's husband and Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, as well as The Hollywood Reporter itself, which is taking a self-reported "new push" into television with Angelyne. THR's interest in the project stems from an expose on Angelyne that was published earlier this year by senior writer Gary Baum. In the piece, Baum finally revealed the true identity of the L.A.'s longtime local celebrity, Renee Goldberg, and spent months diving into her past and her fame. Baum will serve as a consultant for the in-development drama.

Angelyne sounds as though it will be a fascinating series for Emmy Rossum, who will take on the persona of a Polish immigrant whose parents were Holocaust survivors. Somewhere down the road, Renee Goldberg transformed into the blonde model known as Angelyne, and became famous just for being famous, long before the days of reality television and Kardashian obsessions. Angelyne is also known for her pink Cadillac, which she has been known to drive around Hollywood. Rossum, who says she has been fascinated with Angelyne since her younger years, shared her passion for the project in a statement:

Carrie Coon (The Leftovers)

This spring brought the return of HBO's dark drama The Leftovers, for its third and final season. Season 3 brought a variety of changes for the characters, but the biggest revelation was Carrie Coon's Nora. The series finale was a beautiful and complex story revolving around Nora, and Coon gave an outstanding performance that many thought would land her an Emmy nomination today. But she was snubbed, as was the series as a whole. But it's not all bad; Carrie Coon landed a nomination for her work on Fargo.

Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black)

While the newest season of Orange is the New Black was a high stakes drama set during a prison riot, the Emmy nominations were actually based on Season 4. The series was passed for most major categories, with only Laverne Cox and Uzo Aduba receiving nominations. And while this is a snub for the full cast, it's especially frustrating for fans of Danielle Brooks' Taystee. Her performance, particularly during Poussey's death, was raw and heartbreaking, and I'm majorly shocked she wasn't recognized.

Michael McKean (Better Call Saul)

Both Better Call Saul and its predecessor Breaking Bad usually have pretty good luck with Emmy nominations. Breaking Bad cleaned up with the awards in its final few seasons, but Better Call Saul has already gotten its first major snub. Michael McKean was not nominated for his role as Chuck this year, which is a major upset. His performance has been universally applauded, as he plays both slight insanity and provides support for Jimmy. And considering the fate of his character in Season 3's finale, he may not have another chance at a nomination.

Mandy Moore (This is Us)

One of the newcommers that cleaned up with 2017 Emmy nominations is NBC's critically acclaimed family drama This is Us. The show and most of the starring cast got noms, further cementing that the Pearsons are here to stay. But one cast member got snubbed: singer turned actress Mandy Moore. While she's been booking TV and movie roles for years, This is Us is a revelation for Moore's acting chops. But she got snubbed, and is one of the only actors who has to go back to work for Season 2 without at least a nomination.

The Main Cast Of Girls (Girls)

Another acclaimed HBO show that came to an end this year was Lena Dunham's opus Girls. The series saw the various characters becoming full fledged adults, which resulted in some of them saying goodbye forever. And while the show's various guest stars got nominations, Girls was passed up for the biggest categories. This includes the starring cast of Girls, including Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, and Adam Driver. What a bummer way to go out.

The Supporting Cast of Atlanta (Atlanta)

Another new show that managed to scoop up a gaggle of Emmy nominations is Donald Glover's Atlanta. The FX dramedy was instantly critically acclaimed, and the Television Academy certainly seems to recognize its significance. But that doesn't mean that Atlanta was safe from snubs, as the supporting cast didn't get any noms. Indeed, only Glover was nominated for his performance, leaving the likes of Zazie Beetz, Keith Stanfield, and Brian Tyree Henry out in the cold.

The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon

One of the aspects of TV accolades that is constantly changing is the battle for late night supremacy. And this year, it looks like Jimmy Fallon and company came just short of enough critical acclaim to earn them an Emmy nomination for Best Variety Talk Series. Instead, they were edged out by the competition like Stephen Colbert, James Corden, and Jimmy Kimmel. Full Frontal With Samantha Bee even managed to scoop up a nom, although that series probably needs it far more than Fallon and company.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

One show that probably needs the Emmy nominations more than most is The CW's quirky musical comedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. The series nabbed a bunch of noms last year, while star Rachel Bloom also won a Golden Globe for her performance. These accolades helped the show get renewed for a second season, despite poor viewership. But the series only got one nomination for the song "We Tapped That Ass", even being snubbed for its fantastic opening theme song. Let's hope this doesn't result in the network cancelling the show after Season 3.

Oprah Winfrey (The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks)

Oprah Winfrey has been getting involved in a fair amount of film and TV projects as of late, once again flexing her acting muscles. The latest was HBO's TV film The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, which Winfrey produced and starred in. Many believed Oprah to be a shoe in for a possible nomination, but her competition in the limited series/TV movie competition was extremely stiff. Ultimately Big Little Lies and FX's Feud nabbed two leading actress nominations each, making it nearly impossible for someone like Oprah to get into the fray.

Emmy Rossum (Shameless)

Emmy Rossum has made quite the name for herself for portraying Fiona on Showtime's Shameless. Perhaps the least selfish character out of the cast of awful people, Fiona is a fan favorite. And despite Rossum's successful negotiations for a higher pay, she is consistently snubbed by the Television Academy. Meanwhile, her co-star William H. Macy has managed to grab a nomination for the past three years, and 2017 will be his fourth. Hopefully Rossum will be able to finally get the recognition she deserves before the show ends for good.

Sometimes actors are asked to do uncomfortable things for auditions, as evidenced the other day by Alison Brie's reveal that she'd been asked to wear a bikini to an Entourage audition. But apparently it's not uncommon for actresses in Hollywood to be asked to put on bikinis, as Emmy Rossum recently said that she got asked to do a movie in the past year, but it came with a caveat. She didn't even need to audition for the role, but the director wanted to see her in a bikini first. The Shameless actress said:

Rossum's pretty frank with her comments as part of a round table interview over at THR, but what's so striking about this whole thing is that the director even told her agent he'd seen her work. He clearly thought she was the right fit for the part, and even after telling her agent that, he decided he still wanted to make sure her body would look exceptional on camera. Maybe you are wondering if the role in the movie was for something like Baywatch, where beach scenes and being fit were actually a key part of the gig. But Rossum explained about that, too, noting it wasn't for that sort of reason, at all.

Emmy Rossum even clarified that she is nude sometimes on Shameless, so if the director really needed to know what she looked like, he'd have a pretty good idea. However, the real goal of the bikini was to see whether or not she had gotten "fat."

While Emmy Rossum doesn't expressly tell us which movie and which director wanted to make sure she hadn't put on too much weight, from the sounds of things, she seemingly opted just to pass on the role, also noting that the director knowing how "tight [her] ass is" really had nothing to do with the gig. It's common for actors to have to do weird things as part of movie auditions. Kelly Rohrbach even went out of the way to wear a bikini for her Baywatch audition, but in that case, that was her choice. Asking someone to disrobe so they can make sure they haven't gotten too fat is a whole 'nother level of insulting. Let's hope Rossum, or anyone really, doesn't have to deal with that sort of thing with directors in the future.

There has been a terrifying string of high-stakes robberies in Hollywood in recent times, and now the criminals have gone shameless, so to speak. Sometime between Wednesday and Friday of last week, while Shameless star Emmy Rossum was in New York City, thieves targeted her Los Angeles home and made off with a hefty amount of valuable belongings. Details surrounding the story continue to trickle in, but here is what we know right now.

Law enforcement sources close to the case told TMZ that Emmy Rossum's housekeeper left the home in a safe condition on Wednesday of last week. However, the housekeeper returned to a frightening scene on Friday. The power to the house had been shut off. Glass from a glass pane at the back of the house was shattered across the ground, which indicated a forced entry. Inside the house, the housekeeper discovered Rossum's two safes had been left wide open and emptied of the expensive antique jewelry they contained. The celebrity news website added that Rossum may have left herself somewhat vulnerable because she kept the combinations somewhere near the safes.

After the incident, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that thieves swiped $150,000 of possessions from a house in the Los Angeles district of Beverly Park during the timeframe we mentioned earlier, but the LAPD did not at the time name Emmy Rossum as the victim. However, Rossum herself acknowledged the incident on Twitter by sharing a message of gratitude for the officials who assisted her during the aftermath of the robbery. Here is what she had to say:

As we mentioned, Emmy Rossum is the latest celebrity to become the target of a recent string of robberies. Earlier this month, someone stole thousands of dollars in jewelry from a safe at the home of Kendall Jenner. Last month, Nicki Minaj found herself in a similar situation when burglars broke into her home and vandalized it before stealing $200,000 of jewelry. Days before that incident, Alanis Morissette was the target of a burglary that resulted in the loss of $2 million in jewelry, news that arrived on the heels of Morissette's former business manager admitting in court that he had stolen almost $5 million from her. And who could forget the well-documented robbery at gunpoint that Kim Kardashian endured last October during Paris Fashion Week?

Of course, we hope Emmy Rossum can retrieve the stolen valuables. Moreover, we hope she and everyone in Hollywood can take stock of their security. It is disappointing to hear that the Rossum incident might have been preventable if the safes, not to mention the combinations, had been tucked away in a better spot. That piece of information in no way means it is Rossum's fault, but it could be a helpful reminder for everyone to take extra precaution. Hopefully the authorities will bring the thieves to justice.

Shameless is currently airing its seventh season on Showtime, but it looks as if the subscription cable network wants to bring the show back for an eighth season. However, there may be an impediment to the renewal: series lead Emmy Rossum, who has become more of a know name during her time on the long-running series. For years now, Rossum has made less on Shameless than her co-star William H. Macy. Now she reportedly wants equal pay or better to continue on the dramedy.

For the last several days various outlets have been reporting that Rossum has been looking into gaining the same pay as William H. Macy on the series. However, a new report over at Variety states that Showtime has already offered Emmy Rossum the same salary as William H. Macy, who plays alcoholic patriarch Frank Gallagher, is getting. The real problem holding up negotiations, according to said report, is that Emmy Rossum is now looking for more pay than her co-star, and it is holding up negotiations.

Salary negotiations can be a big deal when shows are in later seasons at channels. The stars have more clout than they do earlier on because it's generally in everyone's best interests to keep the gravy train rolling. That's how The Big Bang Theory cast ended up making so much money per episode the last time they negotiated. This concept occasionally backfires, however, as we say last season when Castle tried to fire cast members and keep budget negotiations going for others. In that situation, the series simply ended up being cancelled by ABC.

Earlier reports noted that William H. Macy has scored a hefty pay raise for a potential Season 8, so presumably Emmy Rossum would be making top dollar for her appearance if a deal is worked out. So far, Showtime is still looking to negotiate with the actress and there is no plan in place if she were to decide to quit. However, the show can't move forward without a deal or a decision being made. It's entirely possible that Showtime could be forced into a position to make a tough decision about Rossum or about the series if the negotiations don't work out.

What is allegedly happening is that Rossum wants to be paid more now to make up for all of the seasons when she was paid less than William H. Macy. I'm all for female leads making the same amount as their male co-stars, but to be frank, in general there are often pay differences between cast members early on in shows---and not necessarily due to gender. William H. Macy had been a well-known and well-liked actor for years before signing on with Shameless. At the time Emmy Rossum was signed on, she was just The Phantom of the Opera girl. Sure, she'd been in a few bigger movies, but she was never the #1 name in those movies, and she hardly had the negotiation clout that William H. Macy had going in.

Perhaps now Emmy Rossum can argue she's the heart of the show. Both actors have appeared in the same number of episodes, but Rossum's Fiona is the one keeping things together and an argument can be made that she is a vital component to the series. Maybe it's about time she needs to make more money, but the question is whether or not she's a more valuable player than William H. Macy. We'll find out in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we'll let you know whether negotiations stall or whether Shameless Season 8 finally moves forward.

The world of mythology and the supernatural is an endless one. Ever since we learned how to communicate with one another humans have told stories about beings and universes beyond what we know. Every civilization has their own form of it, becoming representational of various beliefs, ideals and fears. But in preparing for her role as a witch, known as a caster in the world of Beautiful Creatures, Enmy Rossum actually went beyond what we classically know about dark magicians and instead found something special in Norse mythology.

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down one-on-one with the young star to not only talk about researching her role in the new young adult adaptation, but also her motivations for going after the project, and her view on her character’s true nature.

Is it at all strange to go from a television show like Shameless where you’re dealing with some very adult material to more youth-targeted material like Beautiful Creatures?

I wasn’t thinking of it that way, I guess it kind of happened that way. But I hear at least for the demographic of our network, more young people watch our show than other shows on Showtime, so…but I think more males watch Shameless and this is more female driven.

How did you first become with the film? Was it something you went after?

This is something that I went after, that I targeted, because I was a big fan of Richard [LaGravenese] and his writing and I really wanted to play this character when I read the script, and then I read the first book and had the opportunity to audition, because it’s such a different brand of villain. First off, I’ve never done anything like that, and this is such a campy, self-indulgent fun character that I embraced the chance to not play within the world of dark poverty and reality that we play on our show.

What was it about the character that made you need the role?

Well, I guess in the film with the addition of the flashback that isn’t present in the book, it kind of explains more about her transformation from young to embracing her dark side. And I read the book and I liked all of the backstory that I found in there, and then aside from reading all of the books and initially dabbling in some research about wicca and spellcasting – which I thought might inspire me somehow – I started stumbling upon powerful goddesses and the one that I hooked into was Freyja, a Norse goddess who is beautiful and very sensual and definitely seen as a dark power because of how she encourages people to do bad things. And also because in some of the stories she’s shown as the person who leads people into the underworld when they’re dead. So for me, that kind of combination of darkness with allure was something that I wanted to bring to Ridley.

You mentioned that you read the first book, but did you read the other books as well, or did you not want the future of the character to influence your performance?

I tried not to because I didn’t know if we would have that opportunity, because I didn’t know if it would go in the same direction. In future books you find out more about her past as well, so I kind of used it for that.

I actually didn’t know that the origin story wasn’t in the books. Were you able to contribute your own ideas in the development of that scene?

My only contribution to that is kind of imagining the physicality of what a claiming would look like, because that’s not something that’s described in any way as a kind of seizure – but that was kind of my approach to it.

It’s an interesting part of the mythology in this movie that casters come of age and either side with the light or the dark. But because of events in the Duchannes family history it seems as though there was never really a chance that Ridley would go with the light side. And this is kind of touched on in the movie, but do you think that Ridley would have necessarily turned evil if not for the curse?

I think Ridley’s just bad. She’s a bad girl. She maybe isn’t all bad, but I think that the grey area is more black than white.

Given your commitment to Shameless, and a TV show is a pretty big commitment in Hollywood, was there ever any hesitation on your part in terms of taking on a potential franchise – again, another commitment?

Yeah, if this works then these two things take over my life. But that’s a high class problem to have.

If you wind up procrastinating this holiday season and need a late Christmas gift for a TV lover in your family, Showtime's Shameless will be there for you in your time of need. Warner Home Video has announced that the show's first season will be arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on December 27th. You might think it would make more sense to put it out before Christmas, but that's just typical of the Gallaghers.

If you never caught Shameless during its run earlier this year, you may still have heard it referenced online as "that show where Emmy Rossum gets really, really naked on a regular basis." Fortunately, if Emmy Rossum's unmentionables aren't enough to lure you in, the show also happens to be pretty damn funny. Based on a British show of the same name, Shameless tells the story of the dysfunctional Gallagher clan, a dead-broke Chicago family who struggles to make ends meet, even as their patriarch, the alcoholic Frank (William H. Macy), struggles to stay drunk at all times. Emmy Rossum plays Fiona, the eldest Gallagher child, and the one saddled with keeping the family running while Frank stumbles about in a booze-soaked haze. The show is exec produced by TV veteran John Wells (ER, The West Wing).

The show deftly balances dark humor and more dramatic moments, and never attempts to blunt the harshness of the Gallaghers' poverty-stricken existence or Frank's horrible parenting. Rossum is stellar is a young woman who's had to grow up too fast thanks to ineffectual or absent parents, and is now simply trying to carve out something for herself in the world. If you missed it during its run, I can't recommend the DVD release highly enough. Well, that's not quite true. So far the listings for set don't mention any bonus features at all, so fingers crossed that it's simply an oversight. At any rate, the show will be well worth your $49.99 on Blu-ray or $39.98 on DVD.

Shameless will return to Showtime for a second season on Sunday, January 8th, 2012.
