Following Wednesday’s second season run on the 2025 TV schedule, we’ve gotten some very exciting news about the Addams Family spinoff’s third installment. After a season full of mystery and intrigue surrounding Ophelia Frump, Morticia’s sister has officially been cast. She’s being played by a Tim Burton regular, too, which is very exciting and debunks a theory I had about Wednesday’s aunt.

Eva Green Has Been Cast As Aunt Ophelia

It was revealed by Netflix that Aunt Ophelia will be played by Eva Green following Wednesday’s Season 2 cliffhanger ending, which revealed that Ophelia was alive and being kept in Grandmama’s basement. The actress has collaborated with Tim Burton on many occasions as she has had roles in movies like Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, Dumbo and Dark Shadows. So, she’s a perfect fit for Wednesday’s “mysterious and spooky” ensemble.

So, it would seem that we’ll get to see Green with a platinum blonde look and in Grandmama’s basement when Wednesday returns to Netflix’s streaming schedule. Remember, the season ended with her whereabouts being revealed as she wrote “Wednesday must die” in red on her cell’s wall.

Personally, I can’t wait to see the Casino Royale star back in Tim Burton’s world and in costume as this long-talked-about Wednesday character. However, I can’t help but think about how it debunked my main theory about Ophelia, too.

This Confirmation Debunks A Theory I Had About Who Would Play Aunt Ophelia

Now, while this casting is thrilling, it also debunks a theory that I was hoping to be right about. As Season 2 came out last year, we theorized a few times that Lady Gaga could play Aunt Ophelia. While she appeared in the show as Rosaline Rotwood, it seemed possible that her character’s true identity could be the long-lost aunt of Wednesday Addams.

I mean, Rotwood was introduced to Wednesday by way of Grandmama, and considering the grandmother is also holding Ophelia, this seemed possible. Plus, the singer has the look to pull off the aunt, and considering her tiny role in Season 2, it seemed like something bigger could be set up.

It’s also worth noting that in the 1960s series, The Addams Family, Carolyn Jones played both Morticia and Ophelia. So, it also could have been fun (and within reason) to see Catherine Zeta-Jones trade her long black hair for a platinum blonde wig to play both Frump sisters in Season 3 of Wednesday. Clearly, that little theory has also been debunked.

However, those theories have officially been put to rest, because now we know that Eva Green will play Ophelia Frump when Wednesday returns for its third season.

So, get excited about her return to Tim Burton’s universe, and stream the first two seasons of Wednesday with a Netflix subscription. Meanwhile, we’ll keep you posted as we learn more about this highly anticipated return to the Addams Family “creepy” and “kooky” world.

Just like crazy gadgets and classic villains are important to James Bond movies, so-called "Bond girls" have been crucial to the franchise's success. Obviously society has changed quite a bit since Dr. No was released in 1962, and so have the roles these women have played in the adventures. They aren't just a love interest to Bond anymore, though some are, of course, nor do all of them have ridiculous names though some definitely do. Really, it's just all the women who have played important roles,  throughout the years, like the 32 on this list. 

Ursula Andress (Honey Ryder)

The O.G. Bond girl is Honey Ryder, played by Ursula Andress. Bond (Sean Connery) famously meets her as she strolls out of the ocean in a bikini on a small island owned by the titular Dr. No. It's not only one of the most iconic moments of the Bond series, it's one of the most famous in Hollywood history. 

Michelle Yeoh (Wai Lin)

Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh first came to Western cinema acclaim as a Bond girl. After years of success in Hong Kong, Yeoh's Hollywood breakthrough came as Wai Lin in Tomorrow Never Dies, starring Pierce Brosnan as Bond. 

Barbara Bach (Anya Amasova)

Actor Barbara Bach is famous for playing a Bond girl in one of the best Roger Moore movies. Bach, who is the wife of Ringo Starr, played a Russian spy named Anya Amasova in The Spy Who Loved Me. Bach was, in fact, the spy who loved Bond. Or Bond was the spy who loved her. Both ways work. The same movie also features one of the best henchmen in Bond history, Jaws. 

Shirley Eaton (Jill Masterson)

The third movie of the Bond franchise, Goldfinger, is pretty almost universally praised as the best of the series. It's certainly the best of the Connery era, despite what some critics claim. Shirley Eaton plays Jill Masterson who meets her demise in one of the most famous scenes in the series when Bond finds her covered in gold paint after her death. 

Tanya Roberts (Stacey Sutton)

Roger Moore's final appearance as James Bond came in 1985's A View To A Kill opposite Tanya Roberts who starred as Stacey Sutton. The late Roberts had a fairly short-lived career in the mid-80s before reviving it as a regular on That '70s Show in the late 1990s and early 2000s. She'll be forever remembered for her moments as a Bond girl. 

Carey Lowell (Pam Bouvier)

Carey Lowell is best known for her two-season run as ADA Jamie Ross on Law & Order in the '90s, but years before that, she was a Bond girl. Lowell played Pam Bouvier, a capable ex-army officer-turned-informant on the cartels Bond is chasing in the Timothy Dalton-as-Bond flick Licence To Kill. 

Teri Hatcher (Paris Carver)

In 1997 Teri Hatcher was coming off an incredibly successful run as Lois Lane in the TV show Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. She parlayed that in a role as James Bond's love interest in Tomorrow Never Dies, named Paris Carver. 

Jane Seymour (Solitaire)

In the United States, Jane Seymour is probably best known as Dr. Michaela Quinn in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. About 20 years early, she starred as one of the best Bond girls ever, Solitaire, in the first Roger Moore-era Bond movie, Live and Let Die. 

Léa Seydoux (Madeleine Swann)

Léa Seydoux actually starred in two James Bond movies, both featuring Daniel Craig as 007. In both Spectre and No Time To Die, she played Madeleine Swann. She also holds the distinction of being the only actress to play the mother of a James Bond child, which is revealed in the final movie of the Craig era, No Time To Die. 

Halle Berry (Giacinta "Jinx" Johnson)

Before the 21st Century, the producers of the Bond series rarely picked huge stars as Bond girls. That wasn't the case in 2002 when Halle Berry starred as Jinx Johnson in Die Another Day. Berry had just won an Academy Award and was one of the biggest stars in Hollywood when she played Jinx, who was every bit Bond's equal in all ways. 

Maud Adams (Andrea Anders And Octopussy)

Maud Adams is one of two women who have starred in two James Bond movies as Bond girls. Her first, Andrea Anders came in 1974's The Man with the Golden Gun. Her second, and larger role, came as the titular Octopussy in the movie of the same name. Adams also holds the distinction of being the only one to have the same name as the movie. Pretty cool. 

Famke Janssen (Xenia Onatopp)

While she's best known these days for playing Jean Grey/Phoenix in the X-Men movies, Famke Janssen also starred in one Bond movie, GoldenEye, as the ridiculously named assassin Xenia Onatopp. It's one of the sillier names, but the character is all business. 

Diana Rigg (Teresa di Vicenzo/Tracy Bond)

For many Brits, Diana Rigg is known for playing Emma Peel in the '60s spy show The Avengers (no relation to the MCU). For many Americans, she's best known as Olenna Tyrell on Game of Thrones. For Bond fans, she'll always be Tracy Bond, James' first wife, who he married in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, the lone film starring George Lazenby as 007. 

Gemma Arterton (Strawberry Fields)

While Quantum of Solace usually ranks pretty low overall among Bond aficionados, Gemma Arterton deserves a lot of praise for his work as Strawberry Fields. While Strawberry Fields is one of the silliest names in the canon, at least it's not an innuendo. 

Daniela Bianchi (Tatiana Romanova)

Daniela Bianchi is an Italian actress who brilliantly played a Soviet spy in From Russia With Love. Tatiana Romanova, the character Bianchi, set the standard for the capable foil to Bond, rather than a damsel in distress as Honey Ryder was in Dr. No.

Maryam D'Abo (Kara Milovy)

Timothy Dalton only got to play Bond in two films, but in one of him, he got to star opposite Maryam D'Abo, who played the classical musician Kara Milovy. The Living Daylights is, like the other Dalton movie, Licence To Kill is underrated, and along with that, D'Abo's excellent performance. 

Kim Basinger (Domino Petachi)

Okay, okay, so Never Say Never Again isn't an official James Bond movie, but it does feature one of the biggest stars to ever play a Bond girl. Kim Basinger was already a big deal when she signed on to join Sean Connery in his return as 007 in the remake of Thunderball. 

Denise Richards (Christmas Jones)

The producers of The World Is Not Enough took a lot of grief for casting Denise Richards as Dr. Christmas Jones. Critics complained that she couldn't be taken seriously as a doctor, or something. It was pure sexism because Richards was fine in the role and fit the mold of a Bond girl perfectly. Her stupid character name wasn't her fault, either. 

Eva Green (Vesper Lynd)

Vesper Lynd is one of two Bond girls who actually married the super spy. Eva Green plays Lynd in Casino Royale and like the other woman who married Bond, Tracy, in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Lynd doesn't make it to the end of the movie. She is killed in front of Bond in Venice in one of the most tragic endings to any Bond movie. 

Grace Jones (May Day)

Without question, May Day, played by Grace Jones, in A View To A Kill is one of the most intimidating Bond girls. She's bold and built like a truck. She's a woman of few words, but she can intimidate with nothing more than a look. Grace Jones wasn't in a ton of movies over her unique career, but maybe she should have been more based on this. 

Jill St. John (Tiffany Case)

Jill St. John, who plays Tiffany Case in Diamonds Are Forever has had a long career, going back to the 1950s. In 1971, she starred alongside Sean Connery in his return to the role of 007 and she holds the distinction of being the first American Bond girl. 

Sophie Marceau (Elektra King)

Elektra King, played by Sophie Marceau, is a quintessential Bond girl. She's both Bond's lover and his enemy in The World Is Not Enough. As such, Marceau plays both vulnerable and vicious and the French actress nails both. 

Bérénice Marlohe (Sévérine)

Skyfall is consistently ranked as one of the fans' favorites and that's in no small part to Bérénice Marlohe, who plays Sévérine. Marlohe hasn't starred in many English-language films, in fact, Skyfall was her first, but you'd never know if from the French actor's performance in the Bond universe. 

Mie Hamna (Kissy Suzuki)

Let's be honest, Kissy Suzuki has to be the silliest name ever. It's just ridiculous. That doesn't mean that actress Mie Hamna's performance as the Japanese ninja/spy in You Only Live Twice was silly. The Japanese actress didn't speak much English, but she left an impression on moviegoers, despite her lines being overdubbed. 

Izabella Scorupco (Natalya Simonova)

Natalya Simonova, played by Polish actress Izabella Scorupco, is a stereotypical Bond girl who is a bit of a damsel in distress but turns out to be very capable when teamed with Bond. Scorupco. The multi-talent Scorupco is also a singer and even hosted one season of Sweden's version of Top Model. 

Ana De Armas (Palona)

We couldn't have this list without Ana de Armas, but she doesn't play a typical Bond girl. The character, Palona, is not Bond's lover, nor is she his enemy. She's his equal in many ways, as a green CIA agent sent to help Bond. De Armas is pretty darn awesome in the role, fighting side-by-side with 007. Of course, even before starring here, she was already a pretty big star. 

Carole Bouquet (Melina Havelock)

At the end of The Spy Who Loved Me, the words "James Bond Will Return in For Your Eyes Only, but after the success of Star Wars, the producers of the franchise pivoted and made Moonraker instead to add some sci-fi to the series. Actress Carole Bouquet auditioned to be the Bond girl in that movie but lost out on the part. Luckily, she landed the role of Bond's ally, Melina Havelock, in For Your Eyes Only when it was finally made. 

Lois Chiles (Holly Goodhead)

Moonraker is... not James Bonds' finest hour, but it's not that bad either. One thing that no one can argue, Dr. Holly Goodhead is the dumbest name in the history of the franchise. Sure, there's always been some sophomoric humor to Bond girl names, but actor Lois Chiles has the unfortunate luck of starring as the character with this over-the-top name. 

Claudine Auger (Domino Derval)

French actress and model Claudine Auger played one of the most famous Bond girls in Thunderball. Her sultry performance set a new standard for the archetype. Auger, who played Domino in the movie, wasn't in a lot of movies American audiences would recognize, but she did represent her native France in the Miss World pageant in the 1950s. 

Lana Wood (Plenty O'Toole)

While she's in the running for the silliest name, Plenty O'Toole doesn't have plenty of screen time, lasting only a few minutes before being thrown out of a window of Bond's hotel room in Diamonds Are Forever. She's played by Lana Wood, sister of the late Natalie Wood. 

Britt Ekland (Mary Goodnight)

Britt Ekland, who was once married to Peter Sellers, stars as Mary Goodnight in The Man With The Golden Gun. Let's be honest here, the writers of the movie were not kind to the character as the British agent isn't a very smart or capable spy. That's on the writers, not Ekland. 

Cassandra Harris (Countess Lisl von Schlaf)

Australian actress Cassandra Harris had an interesting and tragic life. When she starred as Lisl von Schlaf in For Your Eyes Only, he husband in real life was none other than Pierce Brosnan. How's that for meta? Sadly, Harris died of ovarian cancer at just age 43 in 1991. Her mother AND her daughter both died of the same disease in their 40s as well. 

We know that sometimes the production of a movie can be a difficult and stressful place, but it seems that sometimes that’s the case even for movies that never get made. Eva Green is currently suing the production company behind A Patriot, a sci-fi film she was set to appear in. The film collapsed during pre-production, but Green claims she’s still owed money under her contract. Now the producer who Green had previously stated was “pure vomit” has told his side of the story.

Texts written by Eva Green were read into the court record to make it clear she didn’t have a very high opinion of producer Jake Seal, who she apparently called a “moron” and “the Devil.” However, Variety reports that while on the stand, Seal placed much of the film’s failure not on Green, at least not directly, but on the writer/director of A Patriot, Dan Pringle, and Pringle’s producing partner Adam Merrifield. 

Seal says he believes that Pringle and Merrifield were inexperienced, with Pringle having only directed one feature before A Patriot. That film had been significantly different than this one, as it was filmed on location rather than on a soundstage and did not require the significant construction of sets that this would have needed. He also claimed that the two were “starstruck” by former Bond girl Eva Green, and as a result, they were unable to properly manage the actress.

Despite the heated texts from Green with seemingly strong feelings regarding Seal, the producer claims he only had direct contact with the actress once during pre-production. The rest of their interactions were done via email, but he stated that he found Green “unpredictable” and that she made demands regarding what production staff she wanted to work with.

On the opposite side, Green’s attorneys argued that the movie’s failure was at the feet of Jake Seal, who failed to make proper preparations for the film, including building sets at Black Hanger Studios, the production facility which he owns and was set to be used to film A Patriot. There were also reported issues with casting. Charles Dance had originally been cast in a role in A Patriot but had reportedly left the project. There were discussions with Bill Nighy to possibly replace Dance, but there was no contract in place 20 days before filming was set to begin. There were also apparently some questions regarding Dance's status as it was possible he might make the movie after all.

Eva Green is suing White Lantern, the production company behind A Patriot, claiming that she is owed $1 million under the terms of a “pay or play” contract which guaranteed her the money whether or not the movie was actually made. The studio and its parent company claim that Green walked away from the project on her own, and thus has no right to the money. 

Back in 2020, Casino Royale’s Eva Green sued White Lantern Films and SMC Speciality for refusing to pay her a $1 million fee after her sci-fi thriller, A Patriot, was dropped. She was reportedly set to star in and executive produce the production. With the case still ongoing, Green’s second day at the high court this week involved the examination of her private WhatsApp messages. While under oath, the British actress responded to the messages that apparently reveal her calling crew members “peasants” and an investor “a fucking nightmare.”

Shortly after the Penny Dreadful actress opted to take the companies to court, her lawsuit took another turn. She faced a counterclaim from White Lantern Films and SMC Speciality finance, who claimed that she pulled out of the sci-fi thriller and breached her contract. During her recent court appearance, she was asked at length about the messages she sent amid production on A Patriot, during which she allegedly said she felt “obliged to take [the producer’s] shitty peasant crew members from Hampshire” after the filming location was switched from Ireland. She reportedly said she had to “get out” and called her investor “a fucking nightmare.” As reported by The Guardian, Eva Green provided a reason for the blunt, purported statements:

In her response, she referenced the time that Daniel Craig said he’d rather “slash his wrists” than play 007 again after completing his fourth James Bond movie, Spectre. He previously explained that he made those “stupid” comments when he was interviewed two days after the movie finished production. Craig now regrets those controversial comments and has explained that he meant them jokingly. (And of course, Craig did return for his fifth and Bond film, No Time to Die). Whether that situation matches up with this one is up to interpretation, but the 42-year-old actress seems to be using it as the crux of her argument in this court case.

There was another big moment in this week's proceedings, as Max Mallin KC, a barrister for the production company, accused Eva Green of asking her driver, John Ward, to lie for her in regard to the messages she sent him. Those DMs allegedly said she believed A Patriot would probably be “suspended or canceled." She's specifically accused of having told Ward not to reply to “total arseholes” on the production team, out of fear of being sued, and had a desire to move production. Mallin suggested that Green never intended to do the thriller and attempted to dampen SMC’s position so she and others could acquire the film rights and change the shooting location. 

The Golden Compass actress shot down the notion that she didn’t feel like she was in safe hands with A Patriot’s lead producers and believe that the movie was going to be produced in a cheap manner. She also rejected the idea that she had no intention to finish the film. When asked if she understood what would be spent on the film, the Kingdom of Heaven actress asserted that the movie originally had a budget of eight or nine million before it was cut in half. Despite that, she claims that, at the time, she still had faith that the movie could still be a success despite the budget cut.

At this point, it's hard to say how Eva Green's case will be resolved and just how these unearthed messages will figure into a verdict. All the while, Green is reteaming with her Casino Royale director, Martin Campbell, on Dirty Angels, which is about a group of female soldiers disguising themselves as medics to save teenagers caught between ISIS and forces of the Taliban. Reintroducing the world of James Bond movies isn’t the easiest job in the world, despite the fact that director Martin Campbell has done it twice and made it look so damned good. Through his efforts in the making of Casino Royale, Campbell helped reinvent 007 with Daniel Craig’s blunt instrument restarting the entire continuity. 

Eva Green’s performance as Bond woman Vesper Lynd was just as essential, as the women that would be paired up with Commander Bond after her departure would also change. 16 years later, the pair are about to team up once more, and Green has one particular reason that she’s scared to tackle her next film Dirty Angels alongside Martin Campbell.

When I spoke with Green for her upcoming horror film Nocebo, she clued me into the project’s existence, as well as her excitement to be working with Campbell yet again. The reason that she’s scared to dive into Dirty Angels is nothing sinister, but something that many an actor has had to face at one point or another. Here’s what Eva Green told CinemaBlend when it became to why this next film is such a fearsome prospect: 

Considering all of the challenges that an actor could be afraid of, nailing an American accent is both not that horrific and obvious fodder for anxiety. However, when talking about reuniting with Martin Campbell for the first time since the film that kicked off Daniel Craig’s 007 era, Eva Green couldn’t be happier. Adding a musical flourish when mentioning how they were about to be “rrre-u-nited,” her excitement was voiced clearly and infectiously.

Turning back to those accent concerns though, it’s an interesting fear to hear from Eva Green. Looking at her experiences with Casino Royale and even Nocebo pushing those respective performances into some harrowing moments, it could be seen as a relatively small concern. Then again, Dirty Angels sounds like it’s going to be an adventure to make, outside of Green’s accented anxiety. 

A project that’s been emerging into the public eye over the past couple of months, the picture just recently landed former Batwoman actor Ruby Rose in its ensemble cast. Per details that came from THR, the movie’s overall story is described as follows:

Dirty Angels isn’t supposed to start production until next month, so there’s plenty of time for Eva Green to nail her American accent. In addition, of course, to whatever other thrills and spills are required in this action extravaganza. Though it might be a good idea for Green to consult with her new co-star, as Ruby Rose has had quite a bit of experience turning her Australian accent into something sounding stateside.

Eva Green fans are in luck, as Nocebo opens in theaters this weekend, which will be followed by its digital and VOD release on November 22nd. After that, the film will head to its streaming home of Shudder at an undetermined point in 2023. Though if you’re primed to revisit Green’s portrayal of Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, that title is streaming for those with a Netflix subscription, at the time of this publication. 

As far as ratings go, at least those handed out by the Motion Picture Association, there is nothing more extreme these days than NC-17. That means no one under the age of 18 can be admitted to a movie with this rating for a multitude of reasons.

Some directors, producers, and studios will re-cut their films to get an R-rating, but there are plenty of NC-17 movies that have been left unedited and sent out into the wild as is, which has resulted in limited releases of some of the most notorious movies of all time. Henry & June (1990) - Fred Ward, Uma Thurman

What better way to start than with the very first movie to earn the NC-17 rating – according to SlashFilm – Henry & June. Director Philip Kaufman’s adaptation of Anaïs Nin’s memoir focuses on a love triangle between novelist Henry Miller (Fred Ward), his wife, June (Uma Thurman), and the French-American author (portrayed by Thurman’s future fellow Pulp Fiction cast member, Maria de Medeiros) in 1930s Paris. Despite its controversially explicit sexual content, the drama was a mild critical and commercial success and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography.

Killer Joe (2012) - Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple

Directed by the late William Friedkin and written by 2019’s Little Women cast member Tracy Letts (also based on his stage play), Killer Joe stars Emile Hirsch as an indebted young man who hatches a plan to have his mother (played by Gina Gershon) killed to collect insurance money. Matthew McConaughey gives one of his most underrated performances as the titular hitman he hires, whose fee is so high that he agrees to let his teenage sister (Juno Temple) be treated as collateral.

According to Deadline, the shamelessly twisted crime thriller was released with an NC-17 rating after Friedkin and distributor LD Entertainment opted not to change its ending. While an R-rated version of the film was later made available for home viewing, those interested in seeing it in its original form could also seek out the unrated director’s cut of Killer Joe instead.

Mysterious Skin (2004) - Joseph Gordon-Levitt

One of Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s best movies from earlier in his career is Mysterious Skin, in which he plays a gay teen making a living as a sex worker who recalls a disturbing encounter from his childhood through narration. Meanwhile, another teen, played by Brady Corbet, struggles to figure out the truth behind a blackout he suffered when he was younger, leading the two men to cross paths unexpectedly.

Writer and director Gregg Araki is notorious for including pervasive sexual content in his films, but the NC-17 rating for Mysterious Skin – also starring Elisabeth Shue and Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast member Michelle Trachtenberg – was largely determined by its graphic depiction of pedophilia. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the challenging subject matter sparked controversy when the Australian Family Association feared child predators could use the film as a grooming tool or for their own gratification.

Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1989) - Antonio Banderas

In one of his many racy collaborations with writer and director Pedro Almodóvar, Antonio Banderas stars in Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! as Ricky, who is released from a mental hospital with the intent of finding love. So, he tracks down a former adult film star, played by Victoria Abril, whom he once shared an intimate encounter with and takes her prisoner in hopes he can convince her to be his wife.

According to Gwyne Edwards’ 2001 book Almodóvar: Labyrinths of Passion, the controversial subject matter of Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! was instrumental in the creation of the NC-17 rating itself. Thus, the MPA branded it as such in 1990 for a “scene of strong adult sensuality with nudity,” according to FilmRatings.com.

Blonde (2022) - Ana de Armas

Based on the book by Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde is director Andrew Dominik’s in-depth and fictionalized look at the tragically short life of Norma Jeane Baker, better known as Marilyn Monroe. Ana de Armas disappears into the role of one of Hollywood’s most iconic figures, portraying a side of the actress and model that was long kept hidden from the public.

Dominik once said that he anticipated his nearly three-hour biopic would be rated NC-17 before the MPA made it official in June 2022, citing “some sexual content” as the reasoning. The film’s more hardcore scenes would inspire some strong reactions from both critics and audiences since it was made available to stream in 2022.

Crash (1996) - James Spader, Holly Hunter

Not to be confused with director Paul Haggis’ Best Picture Oscar winner from 2005, Crash is one of the more bizarre and inventive movies directed by David Cronenberg (which is really saying something). Based on the novel by J.G. Ballard, it stars James Spader as a TV producer who becomes seduced into an unusual and dangerous obsession with car wrecks and the intense, sexually stimulating effect they seem to have on him and others, including his mistress (played by Holly Hunter).

Just from learning the plot, it seems pretty clear why a movie like Crash would have been given the NC-17 rating and why it inspired controversy so pervasive that it was chronicled in a 2001 book called The Crash Controversy: Censorship Campaigns and Film Reception. Nonetheless, it was still relatively well-received by critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes, and earned Cronenberg a Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, despite vehement opposition from the jury’s then-president, Francis Ford Coppola.

Descent (2007) - Rosario Dawson

Not to be confused with the Scottish 2005 horror movie THE Descent, this film sees Rosario Dawson giving her most provocative and extreme performance since she broke out in another controversial classic, Kids. This time, she plays a woman who undergoes a dramatic and violent change of character after she is assaulted by a man she meets at a fraternity party.

This brutal and upsetting revenge drama was actually released with two alternative cuts: one rated NC-17 and an R-rated edit that omits seven minutes of footage. Still, both versions contain brutal rape, language, some sexual content and drug use.

Showgirls (1995) - Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle MacLachlan

Perhaps the most infamous movie on this list, Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 erotic cult classic, Showgirls, stars a post-Save by the Bell Elizabeth Berkley as a young drifter named Nomi Malone. As she hitchhikes to Las Vegas with dreams of becoming a famous dancer on the Strip, she has some ups and downs on her journey, but finally makes her dreams come true, at a price…

According to the MPA, Showgirls was given its NC-17 rating due to the amount of nudity and erotic sexuality throughout the movie, as well as graphic language and sexual violence. If you’ve seen the movie (and not the VH1 version with digitized bras), you’re well aware of the film’s graphic nature.

Shame (2011) - Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan

Released in 2011, Steve McQueen’s psychological drama, Shame, stars Michael Fassbender as Brandon Sullivan – a successful and dashing executive who is secretly a traumatized sex addict who will do anything and everything to get his kicks in New York City. Just when he thinks life can’t get any worse, his equally damaged sister (Carey Mulligan) storms into his life, causing more complications.

Upon release, Shame was given an NC-17 rating by the MPA for explicit sexual content as well as some truly troubling scenes. I’ve walked out of several movies before, but this was the first I exited simply because what was happening on the screen was way too real and unnerving to finish.

Blue Is The Warmest Color (2013) - Léa Seydoux 

Abdellatif Kechiche’s 2013 French drama, Blue is the Warmest Color, stars Adèle Exarchopoulos as a high school student who experiences a sexual awakening after meeting an art school student and aspiring painter named Emma, played by James Bond movies actor, Léa Seydoux. Over the years, the two form a contentious and highly-emotional relationship that opens their eyes to a whole new world around them.

Though tamer than some of the other titles on this list, Blue is the Warmest Color was given an NC-17 rating because of the explicit sexual content the MPA felt was unsuitable for younger audiences. However, at least one theater allowed teens to watch the movie upon release.

Bad Lieutenant (1992) - Harvey Keitel

Abel Ferrara’s 1992 crime thriller Bad Lieutenant follows Harvey Keitel as a broken NYPD detective whose stress over his job, life, and gambling habits get the best of him. From one interaction to the next, the unnamed lieutenant falls deeper down the rabbit hole of depravity, committing some irredeemable crimes of his own along the way.

If there has ever been a movie deserving of an NC-17 rating it would have to be Bad Lieutenant. With an abundance of sexual violence, intense sexual situations, endless drug use, and extreme language throughout, it’s no wonder the MPA came down hard on the movie, which later inspired a sequel only in name, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Werner Herzog.

Orgazmo (1997) - Trey Parker, Matt Stone

Co-writer and director Trey Parker plays a normal Mormon missionary trying to find enough money to support and marry his longtime girlfriend. But when he stumbles upon a porn set, the once strait-laced and deeply devoted young man becomes the biggest thing going in the adult entertainment industry in Orgazmo.

It should come as no surprise that a movie written by the creators of South Park, and one centered on the porn industry, would receive an NC-17 rating from the MPA in 1998. It should come as even less of a surprise that the rating was handed down due to the sexual content and dialogue featured throughout.

Bent (1997) - Clive Owen, Ian McKellen

After being discovered and arrested by the Gestapo in Nazi Germany, Max – a proud gay man played by Clive Owen – is sent on a perilous journey to the Dachau concentration camp where he is subjected to indescribable horrors while still being able to find love.

Possibly one of the most harrowing movies about the Holocaust, Sean Mathias’ 1997 drama Bent is absolutely heartbreaking and disturbing with its graphic displays of violence. Upon its release, the movie received an NC-17 rating from the MPA due to its graphic sexual nature.

Matador (1986) - Antonio Banderas

In one of his most disturbing roles, Antonio Banderas plays Angel, a young student who confesses to an attempted rape and a series of murders he may or may not have committed, in Pedro Almodóvar’s 1986 dark comedy, Matador.

Just like some of the other movies featuring the director and actor, Matador pushed the limits with its dark, twisted, and oddly humorous story. Still, the MPA would later give the film an NC-17 rating in 2005 (nearly 20 years after initial release) due to “aberrant sexuality” and violence.

The Dreamers (2003) - Eva Green, Michael Pitt

In the midst of the 1968 Student Riots in Paris, an American student named Matthew (played by Michael Pitt) finds himself getting caught up in the lives of formerly conjoined twins – Louis Garrel as Théo and Eva Green as Isabelle – whose relationship is far from normal. When asked to spend a month with the siblings, Matthew falls deeper into their wild and free-flowing lifestyle.

Bernardo Bertolucci’s 2003 erotic drama, The Dreamers, pushes several boundaries and deviates from societal norms to tell a story about young love in the midst of a chaotic time. With the extreme sexual content and nudity, it’s no surprise the MPA gave the movie an NC-17 rating upon release.

A Dirty Shame (2004) - Selma Blair, Johnny Knoxville

A John Waters movie receiving an NC-17 rating? You don’t say! The filthy filmmaker’s 2004 comedy, A Dirty Shame, follows Tracey Ullman as Sylvia Stickles– a puritanical resident of the Hatford Road area of Baltimore who experiences a sexual awakening after being hit by a car. 

Selma Blair, Johnny Knoxville, and Chris Isaak also star in A Dirty Shame, which (no shocker here) was given the NC-17 rating by the MPA due to its pervasive sexual content. And if you’ve seen the movie, you are all too aware of just how pervasive and graphic it is.

Pink Flamingos (1972) - Divine

When Connie (Mink Stole) and Raymond Marble (David Lochary) attempt to steal Babs Johnson’s (Divine) title of “the filthiest person alive,” the down and dirty criminal and her family make it their mission in life to prevent the newcomers from accomplishing their mission by any means necessary.

With scenes featuring incest, people eating dog poop, flashers, and an infamously notorious scene involving a chicken, it shouldn’t shock anyone that John Waters’ classic exploitation comedy film, Pink Flamingos, was given an NC-17 rating by the MPA upon re-release in 1997, 25 years after it first shocked audiences around the world. Maybe that’s why Roger Ebert hated the movie.

The Evil Dead (1981) - Bruce Campbell

Bruce Campbell stars in the film that kickstarted the Evil Dead franchise as Ash Williams who – along with his girlfriend and a small group of friends – set off for a night away in an isolated cabin. However, the night quickly takes a turn for the worst after they discover the Necronomicon – a powerful book that awakens possessive, malevolent spirits.

Sam Raimi’s classic horror film, The Evil Dead, was initially released with an X rating back in 1981 on account of its substantial graphic violence and gore. It was later given an NC-17 by the MPA when the movie was re-released back in 1994.

BONUS: Elles (2011) - Juliette Binoche

The title of Elles refers to the French magazine, Elle, for which Juliette Binoche’s character is researching an article about an underground sex worker ring orchestrated by female college students in Paris. However, the closer she gets to the facts behind the story, the more she begins to question her own personal interests. Graphic sexual content that goes as far as urinary fetishes initially earned this drama from Polish filmmaker Malgoska Szumowska an NC-17 rating.

BONUS: Happiness (1998) - Philip Seymour Hoffman 

The late Philip Seymour Hoffman plays one of several interconnected people all searching desperately for the most coveted emotion there is: happiness. Of course, their chosen ways of acquiring it are exactly the kind of reasons this Golden Globe nominee was initially given an NC-17 rating. 

Also starring the likes of Trick ‘r Treat’s Dylan Baker, Twin Peaks cast member Lara Flynn Boyle, and SNL’s Jon Lovitz, Happiness is one of the darkest comedies of its time. However, that does not mean so much when you learn it comes from writer and director Todd Solondz.

Elles and Happiness are some of a few notable examples of films that surrendered their NC-17 ratings upon release and are now deemed “unrated,” such as the aforementioned Kids. However, they are just as challenging and provocative as any of the films listed above, which is why we’ll still count them as NC-17 in our book.

Eva Green, known for playing Bond girl Vesper Lynd opposite Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with the producers of a project titled A Patriot, a movie she was set to star in with Helen Hunt and Charles Dance. As reported back in June, Green sued the producers for roughly $1 million plus legal fees because the project canceled. Now it looks like the lawsuit has taken another turn.

According to Variety, Eva Green has reportedly been accused by the production company White Lantern of walking away from the $5 million science-fiction movie A Patriot. It claims this was the reason for production to inevitably shut down, and that this makes Green ineligible for the fee that she claims she’s owed. In addition, White Lantern believes Eva Green owes it roughly $1.3 million, and that it should also be compensated for lost profits.

In response, Eva Green released a statement denying the allegations, calling them erroneous and saying that she was ready and able to perform her contract. Her lawyers are planning to respond to White Lantern’s allegations in the court papers at London’s High Court.

Sherborne Media Finance took over White Lantern back in February and allegedly gave notice of termination of the artist agreement, saying Eva Green breached the agreement. The actress reportedly says the company never gave her information about the breach.

A Patriot was written by Dan Pringle, and he would have also taken on directorial duties if the project had continued. The movie was about Eva Green’s character, Kate Jones, being a Captain in the Border Corps of a futuristic authoritarian state. Eventually, she starts to question her allegiance to the state. Originally, Tim Robbins and Kathy Bates were set to start in the movie before dropping out for unknown reasons.

Initially, the science fiction thriller was set to start shooting in August 2019 for a seven-week stretch in Dublin, Ireland. However, production was delayed twice and then moved to Black Hangar Studios in England before the project was cancelled altogether.

It’s unknown if A Patriot will restart production during or after this lawsuit. Clearly, because of current events, trying to get any movie production back into gear would be difficult. While this project could find new life in the future, it’s hard to say if that’s likely or not.

Eva Green, of course, has had a long career in Hollywood. While she’s known for playing Bond girl Vesper Lynd, she’s more recently been in the TV show Penny Dreadful and the live-action Disney remake of Dumbo. It’s unclear if Eva Green has anything lined up for her next project, but hopefully she’ll find something once this legal drama is said and done.

We haven't seen Eva Green on the big screen in over a year, and based on the box office, it doesn't appear all that many people actually saw her in the Dumbo remake. We also haven't heard much about what she's been up to as far as future film projects. It seems that at least part of the reason for that is that the actress was set to star in an upcoming science fiction movie called A Patriot, which was supposed to film last year. However, production was postponed a couple of times before being cancelled altogether, and now Green is suing the producers to the tune of $1 million that she claims she's owed.

Eva Green has filed a suit with the U.K/s High Court arguing that she had a "pay or play" agreement with production company White Lantern Film (Britannica) Ltd. which entitled her to the million dollars, which is apparently currently sitting in an escrow account, whether or not the movie was actually made. White Lantern allegedly claimed that last October Eva Green breached the agreement, and thus is not entitled to the money. The Daily Mail, which reported on the suit, was unable to ascertain how Green allegedly breached the agreement.

In addition to the $1 million, Eva Green is asking that her legal fees be covered.

A Patriot was written by, and set to be directed by Dan Pringle, and focused on Eva Green's character, a border guard in a futuristic authoritarian state who begins to question her own allegiance to the regime. Tim Robbins and Kathy Bates were originally set to star. Eva Green was set to appear alongside Game of Thrones' Charles Dance and Helen Hunt before the production was shutdown.

Sherborne Media Capital, which took over White Lantern, will not comment on the case as it is an ongoing legal matter. Eva Green was notified of the takeover in February and was apparently given notice of the termination of her artist agreement at that time, but Green's suit argues that was too late.

It's unclear if A Patriot is essentially a dead project that will never see the light of day, or if it's just shutdown for the moment, resulting in Eva Green and others leaving the project as Tim Robbins and Kathy Bates apparently did before. The reason for the two previous production delays are not explained. Certainly, right now, getting a new project off the ground is essentially impossible. As with any delayed project, it could certainly find new life eventually, though it's certainly possible that the outcome of this lawsuit could determine how much money there is to make the movie happen.

Hopefully, once filming of movies does get back up and running Eva Green will find a new project to get involved with.

At this point, it seems like everyone is a little bit baffled about what’s going on with Doctor Strange 2. Apparently, that even includes people who are rumored to be cast in it, like Eva Green. Though the actress admits she’s not sure where that rumor started, she’s also made it clear she’s not totally opposed to the idea of entering the MCU.

Last year, some websites began to whisper that Eva Green was linked to the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. She was reportedly being tapped to play Nightmare, the ruler of the Dream Dimension who can cause all manner of havoc by penetrating the subconscious when someone is sleeping. And let’s be real -- based on the gravitas she’s showcased in everything from Casino Royale to Penny Dreadful, Eva Green could be an inspired choice to bring that villain to life.

There’s just one problem. According to Eva Green, the rumor seemingly has no basis whatsoever. When Total Film asked if there was anything behind the speculation about her involvement in Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, she balked:

So, there’s that. If Eva Green were to show up in the Doctor Strange franchise, you’d think she’d probably be somewhat aware that it was going to happen. But even though it looks like she’s not going to be playing Nightmare after all, she was quick to make it clear that she’s an MCU fan:

In other words -- though it sounds like we won’t get a chance to see Eva Green in Doctor Strange 2, there isn’t necessarily anything stopping her from showing up in a future MCU film. And though the apparent confirmation of her non-participation in the Doctor Strange sequel does clear one potential rumor up, there are still plenty of unknowns where the film is concerned.

Since Scott Derrickson stepped away from directing Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness, the film’s overall creative direction seems to be a bit in flux. There are rumors that Sam Raimi will step in to fill Scott Derrickson’s shoes. There are more rumors that the film will have a new script. And according to Kevin Feige, we can expect to see some new Marvel Comics characters joining the MCU fray -- but we seriously have no idea who they might be.

Here’s what we do know about Doctor Strange 2: it’s currently scheduled to be released on May 7, 2021. It will apparently tie in to Disney+’s MCU series WandaVision and Loki. Um. Benedict Cumberbatch will be in it, definitely. That much we’re sure of. At least for now.

For over 50 years, the Bond franchise has provided audiences worldwide with a steady assortment of super-gadgets, electrifying action sequences, and daring missions across many gorgeous locales. In addition to all these incredible spectacles, there have also been a wide array of stunning Bond-adjacent women that join 007 on his worldwide adventures. Often enough, Oftentimes, the films' most memorable aspects are the various "Bond girls" that share the bill with their leading man but generally provide all-too-brief appearances in the series.

While not every Bond actress has been given their proper due on the big screen – and there's a fair share of inherent sexism that the franchise is only now starting to reckon with – there are a wide array of lovely and talented women who shined in their respective roles and became fan favorites with their charm, wit and sex appeal. Without any further ado, let's take a look at the best Bond girls in the series.

Andrea Anders (The Man With The Golden Gun)

Throughout the extensive history of the ongoing Bond cinematic franchise, there is only one actress who has played two different women in the series: Maud Adams. The Swedish actress worked with Roger Moore twice in the extensive series, and they first shared the screen together in Moore's introduction to the franchise, The Man With the Golden Gun, where she played Andrea Anders. Capturing the mystique, radiance and charm that are often instrumental to any great Bond girl's success, Adams got it perfectly.

Octopussy (Octopussy)

Maud Adams returned to the franchise for perhaps the most ridiculed name in Bond history (baring one other prominent example), Octopussy, in the 1983 movie of the same name; it's the titular role! This may not be the most respected or adored Bond girl in cinematic history, but Adams once again played the role splendidly. Not too many actresses could sell a role with a name like Octopussy, but it's a great credit to Adams that she actually brings a whole new edge and personality to her second Bond girl role.

Tracy Bond (On Her Majesty's Secret Service)

The quality of On Her Majesty's Secret Service is often contested when it comes to its legacy, as it's considered either one of the finest or weakest installments the franchise; I'm closer to the latter, personally. Still, there's no denying the fine screen presence of Dianna Rigg's Tracy Bond, the on-screen love interest for the one-and-done portrayer George Lazenby, and one could argue that Rigg outpaced her male co-star. She brought the right spunk to stand out as one of the great Bond girls to date, and it makes sense that Tracy was the only Bond girl that 007 decided settled down with and marry —if sadly only for a few short hours.

Honey Ryder (Dr. No)

To celebrate where it all began, the Bond franchise first started with Dr. No back in 1963, with Ursula Andress starring as the very first Bond girl, Honey Ryder. It makes sense that she started the tradition of great actress taking these key roles, since she has possibly the most well-known entrance in Bond history. Walking out from the water as if she were a sea goddess, Ursula is pure radiance, and it's no wonder why this Bond girl role is so sensational. It's a shame that her character is practically one-note in terms of being a damsel-in-distress, but the Swiss actress still makes it shine, and it's clear that many of the following Bond girls would hope to follow in her lead.

Tatiana Romanova (From Russia With Love)

It's hard to serve as both a proper match and adversary to 007 himself, but Russian Soviet officer Tatiana Romanova is here for it. Played by Italian actress (and former Miss Universe contestant) Daniela Bianchi, Tatiana often stands toe-to-toe with Bond, both playing to his strengths and adhering to his weaknesses. It's a fantastic performance; it's made all-the-better when she holds her own against the villainous Rosa Klebb, helping to give the Bond girls some much-needed agency.

Pussy Galore (Goldfinger)

With what might possibly be the most (in)famous name in James Bond movie history, English actress Honor Blackman took on the role of Goldfinger's Pussy Galore and became one of the most distinctive and ultimately celebrated Bond girls in the franchise. (Possibly an uphill battle with a name like Pussy Galore.) The character is cool, calm and collected, carrying an edge and charm that is always captivating. Even the suave secret agent is beside himself after meeting the lovely woman. Pussy Galore might not have the best name for a Bond girl, but it's certainly among the most memorable. And thankfully, Blackman's performance in Goldfinger matches it.

Anya Amasova (The Spy Who Loved Me)

Once again, James Bond meets his match with Anya Amasova, the Bond girl who features prominently in the movie The Spy Who Loved Me. Played by American actress Barbara Bach, Amasova is KGB agent, so she can certainly handle herself, and she isn't afraid to go to bat against Jaws. That's how you know she's a keeper. Amasova was wonderful as Barbara, and it was nice to see another Bond girl who could match 007's sharp skills.

May Day (A View To A Kill)

While A View to a Kill isn't everyone's favorite Bond movie (even though I still hold a dear place for it), it does feature the deeply charismatic Grace Jones is the role of May Day. The musician/actress is oozing with cool radiance, and that was no exception when it came to her appearance in this particular Bond film. For instance, she jumps off the Eiffel Tower after climbing it, and that's not the only badass thing she does in this movie. When it comes to captivating ladies who prove to be major butt kickers in the process, Grace Jones is certainly one of the finest examples from this hit series.

Xenia Onatopp (GoldenEye)

There's no denying that Xenia Onatopp is one of the toughest Bond girls out there. The action-friendly character was played by Dutch actress Famke Janssen (best known for playing Jean Grey in the original X-Men trilogy) in GoldenEye, one of 007's many returns to form throughout the years. Xenia is a woman who can crush a man by squeezing them with her thighs. She's the real deal, and she's no doubt one of the best Bond girls to date, and could probably beat you at GoldenEye multiplayer on N64.

Vesper Lynd (Casino Royale)

Similarly, during another one of Bond's many returns to form, Vesper Lynd proved herself to be one of the more dynamic and complex Bond girls, and was a more well-rounded character than we're used to seeing from some of the more simplistic entries (especially in the late '90s and early 2000s). Played by the always great Eva Green, Vesper Lynd is sensational, and she's quite easily among the most tragic characters in the Bond series, too. The life of a super spy is never as easy as it looks, and it's often said that the ones who get closest to Bond often have to risk everything. Good thing Vesper's reputation can't be lost.

Moneypenny (Skyfall)

There are only a few Bond girls played by future Oscar winners, and Naomie Harris is proudly among them. The future Moonlight actress starred in Skyfall, which some fans consider one of Bond's finest hours. While Moneypenny isn't a Bond girl in the traditional sense, she certainly makes a great impression during her time in Sam Mendes' film. As she shoots at the hero and provides several other memorable moments throughout the action-packed James Bond movie, it's clear that Naomie Harris was a star on the rise, and it was only a matter of time before she would find herself in a role that would cement her fame.

Jill Masterson (Goldfinger)

While Jill Masterson, played by Shirley Eaton, ultimately isn't one of the greatest characters in the Bond series, she does have one of the most memorable sequences of all. Specifically, in Goldfinger, she is the woman who is turned gold while lying in bed and waiting for her lover 007 to return. So while we can all agree that looks aren't everything, Jill provided a striking image that has become one of the more iconic in cinematic history, so we would be remiss if we didn't include her in this list.

These are only a mere few of the great Bond girls seen throughout cinematic history, and as the franchise continues, there will likely be more to in the future, including one or two in the next film, No Time to Die. Or maybe this is set to be end of the Bond girl era, as Bond is potentially set to become a woman herself in the future. Time will tell what the future holds for the franchise. Looking back on the original Dumbo, it’s not exactly a film with a big message. After all, it only clocks in at a little over an hour long, and basically just about the misadventures of a baby elephant with big ears and his mouse friend. The same cannot be said about Tim Burton’s new live-action adaptation, however, and I recently had the chance to ask the film’s cast about one of the blockbuster’s key themes: the treatment of animals in entertainment.

Earlier this month I participated in the domestic press day for Dumbo in Los Angeles, and having the opportunity to sit down with Colin Farrell, Eva Green, and Danny DeVito, one subject that I brought up in every interview was one of the movie’s key messages. Each of them had a different perspective on the question, but also expressed a certain pride in how it comes across in Dumbo.

If the opportunities aren’t obvious, you might just not be familiar with the plot of the new film. Set in the wake of World War I, and primarily following a low-rent circus, Dumbo not only features all of the trauma of watching the titular elephant get forcibly separated from his mother, but also has a frank discussion about the exploitation of animals in entertainment. And not only is this something important to the plot of the film, but it’s also worth noting that the production itself made significant use of CGI animals instead of real ones (including for the creation of its eponymous character).

Not every animal in Dumbo is digitally added, as Colin Farrell’s character rides some very real horses in the movie. Interestingly, though, this led to some further consideration of their use in the movie by the actor, who definitely took the message of the movie to heart:

Playing aerialist Colette Marchant in the movie, who winds up performing an act with Dumbo, Eva Green had a lot of opportunity to do some non-animal acting in the film, and it seems that it wasn’t something that made the experience any more of a challenge. Even though working with a big green stuffed animal instead of a real creature meant using her imagination a bit more during production, being a part of a story like Dumbo and getting across its messaging was a point of pride for the actress. Green said,

2019 is going to be a big year for Disney's live-action remakes of their famous animated films. There will be no fewer than three of them coming this year, including Aladdin and The Lion King both coming as big summer releases. The first entry of the year, however, will be the reinvention of Disney's flying elephant, Dumbo. It feels like something of an unusual choice for a remake, but based on the cast and the crew that is making the new Dumbo a reality, it does seem that the right people are involved to make this one something special.

While many of Disney's remakes have been fairly true retellings of the original story, Dumbo is different in that it will be creating a lot of brand new material to complete the tale of the misfit elephant. The basic premise is all still there, but there's a lot more involved. Here's everything we know about Disney's upcoming live-action remake of Dumbo.

What Have We Seen From Dumbo?

Luckily, we no longer have to wonder what the eponymous elephant will look like in this re-imagining of the classic Disney tale. A teaser trailer for Dumbo dropped in mid-June 2018, followed by a full trailer in November giving us some good looks at the cute little guy, along with many of his human co-stars. And, from what we've seen it certainly looks like it could stack up to be a wonderfully magical story.

What Is Dumbo Rated?

Dumbo has been rated PG by the MPAA. This puts the film on par with all four of Disney's most recent, live-action remakes, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast have ended up with PG ratings. While the original Dumbo was a G-rated affair, it seems quite difficult to secure that rating these days. Although, the live-action 101 Dalmatians remake from 1996 did manage it. It's hard to imagine what could be added to Dumbo that might make it unsuitable for young kids, though the original movie did include an elephant getting drunk, which probably gets you at least a PG-rating today.

What Is Dumbo's Release Date?

Dumbo will be Disney's second major release for 2019. On March 8 Marvel will open things with Captain Marvel and Dumbo will follow close behind on March 29, 2019. It releases the week after Godzilla sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the week before DC comics movie Shazam. There are also a number of potential competitors for the family movie dollar being released around the same time, with the long-awaited How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World opening in February. While Dumbo is opening outside of the "summer movie season" it's opening in the same window that the Beauty and the Beast remake did, so major box office success is certainly possible.

What Is Dumbo About?

The original Dumbo was Disney's fourth animated feature, and its story is fairly simple, as shown by the film's 64-minute runtime. Dumbo is born, is mistreated by the other animals due to his abnormally large ears, and is befriended by a mouse who then helps him discover his talent for flight which the ears provide. This makes Dumbo a circus star. There isn't a lot more there, which explains why the new film will be adding a lot to the story, primarily through new human characters.

This version of Dumbo will primarily focus on a character named Holt Ferrier, a former circus star who is now a different man having returned from war. He is hired by circus owner Max Medici to take care of Dumbo, a newborn elephant who is a circus laughing stock largely due to his oversized ears. However, after Holt's children discover that Dumbo can fly, entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere and aerialist Colette Marchant insert themselves as they see star potential, and money, in Dumbo.

The Director

Dumbo promises to be a unique film and Disney has certainly succeeded in getting a unique director to bring it to life. Tim Burton is behind the camera on the new remake which promises to make Dumbo a little weird in a very special way. Burton is no stranger to working with Disney. He got his start in film working with Disney animation on films like The Fox and the Hound and The Black Cauldron. He then returned to the House of Mouse to make movies such as his feature-length Frankenweenie and one of Disney's most successful live-action remakes, Alice in Wonderland. While Burton isn't necessarily known for it, films like Big Fish show that he is perfectly capable of the sort of movie that warms your heart, which we can expect Dumbo will ultimately be.

The Writer

The screenplay for this new version of Dumbo comes from Ehren Kruger. Kruger may not be a household name but he's responsible for some of the biggest movies ever made. He wrote or co-wrote three of the Transformers sequels but may be better known to horror movie fans as the writer of Scream 3 and the first two of The Ring movies among others. He's also written fan favorites like The Brothers Grimm, Reindeer Games and Arlington Road and movies that weren't necessarily favorites, like the recent Ghost in the Shell remake with Scarlett Johansson. There really isn't anything on his resume that looks anything like what we expect Dumbo to be, which could indicate a very different sort of movie or it could indicate Kruger is taking his first shot at something very different for him.

Will There Be Music In Dumbo?

Following the smash hit that was the Beauty and the Beast remake, one always has to wonder how Disney's classic music might be handled by the remake. The original Dumbo isn't a musical in the traditional sense, as most of the music isn't actually sung by the characters. Still, there are a few well-known songs from Dumbo including "Baby Mine," "When I See an Elephant Fly" and "Casey Jr." That last song is especially noteworthy as a promotional picture of director Tim Burton (see above) shows him on board the film's circus train which is very clearly labeled as being Casey Jr.

However, Dumbo won't be a musical. Like Cinderella and Maleficent, we'd expect to hear modern covers of the film's most famous songs, likely included over the end credits rather than part of the story proper. The film's trailer does include a version of "Baby Mine," the movie's tear-jearker, which could very likely be played at the same point in the new film.

Dumbo

Of all the characters in the new Dumbo, the one we seem to know the least about is the title character. In the original Dumbo, the elephant is completely mute, and that appears to be the case here as well. Dumbo is being brought to life via the same computer animation that made the animals of The Jungle Book look real. It seems like Dumbo may end up being more of a secondary character in his own story, with the focus being on the humans that surround him and how they treat him.

Holt Farrier

The part of Holt Farrier, the war vet who becomes Dumbo's caretaker will be played by Colin Farrell. Farrell most recently worked with Disney on Saving Mr. Banks, the story of the making of Mary Poppins, where he played the father of P.L. Travers in the flashback sequences. From everything that we know about the plot, it sounds like, if Dumbo isn't really our main character, Farrier is. He'll likely be the one fighting to keep Dumbo safe while others attempt to take advantage of him once it is discovered what he can do. At one point it was rumored that Will Smith was attached to Dumbo, and it's likely this is the role Smith would have played. Instead, Will Smith will appear in another Disney remake a couple months after Dumbo comes out, as the Genie in Aladdin.

Max Medici

The role of circus owner Max Medici will be played by Danny DeVito. DeVito previously voiced the trainer of heroes Philoctetes (aka Phil) in Disney's animated Hercules. He also previously worked with director Tim Burton in Batman Returns as the Penguin. There is a Ringmaster character in the original animated Dumbo who is likely the basis for this character, but he doesn't have much impact on the story. Whether he is a benevolent circus owner who loves his animals, or a cruel one who mistreats them, is not clear. DeVito is certainly capable of taking the character in either direction. Though he probably isn't the main villain of the movie, as that role appears to be played by somebody else.

V.A. Vandevere

Michael Keaton will play the role of entrepreneur V. A. Vandevere. Keaton hasn't done a major production for Walt Disney Pictures before, though he has provided voices for Pixar in both the Toy Story and Cars franchise in years past. Like Danny DeVito, he worked with Tim Burton on the Batman movies, in the title role back in the late '80s and early '90s. We know from the official plot synopsis that Vandevere will see the potential for money in Dumbo's ability to fly and look to cash in on this. The trailer makes it pretty clear that this is our villain of the piece. Dumbo will be exploited by the unscrupulous businessman, while those that helped raise the little elephant will try to protect him.

Tom Hanks was originally rumored to be in the running to play the villain of Dumbo and while that didn't pan out, Michael Keaton brings a lot of the same stature to the role. Although, seeing Tom Hanks play a bad guy would have been a shocking thing. Michael Keaton in the same role is a lot easier to buy.

Colette Marchant

Eva Green will play what appears to be the major female role in Dumbo as an aerialist named Colette Marchant. She's an associate of V.A. Vandevere and it sounds like the two may be business partners in addition to Marchant being a circus performer herself. This likely means that Green will be a villain as well, assuming that she knows everything that her colleague is up to. This will be Eva Green's third production with Tim Burton following the recent Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and 2012's Dark Shadows.

J. Griffin Remington

The last character of note is named J. Griffen Remington and will be played by Oscar winner Alan Arkin. We know very little about the character beyond the fact that he's a "Wall Street tycoon." If I were to guess, he's probably a potential money source for Michael Keaton's character, who will need money in order to make Dumbo the massive attraction he envisions. That's all speculation, however. The character has only been seen briefly, in a short sneak peek video that was released in February, and it's not revealed how the character will fit into the plot. With Arkin in the role we can be fairly confident the part is important, but since the character doesn't get a mention in the official plot synopsis, it's hard to guess how he'll fit into the story.

Other Dumbo Characters And References

The most conspicuous absences here are all the characters that we actually remember from the animated version of Dumbo. Timothy Q. Mouse, an actual mouse who befriends Dumbo, was the major speaking role in the animated movie. We briefly see a mouse in ringmaster garb in the trailer, implying that we'll get a few references to the animated movie in places where the story has changed.

We also see a black feather that Dumbo plays with in the trailer. This is a clear reference to the "magic feather" that Dumbo receives, which he believes is the thing that allows him to fly. This likely means he won't be receiving it from a flock of crows, which, if you remember the original animated film, is a good thing.

Disney's live-action remakes have been largely successful with audiences in recent years. However, the additions to Dumbo will make this the first movie since Maleficent to tell a significantly different story than the animated movie that inspired it. The question is, just how open is the audience to seeing a very different story of Dumbo? We don't have much longer to wait until we find out.

Over the decades that the James Bond franchise has continued there were always certain elements that you could be sure would be included. Among them was the famous "Bond Girl." While the exact definition of what constituted the Bond Girl was somewhat fluid, you could always be sure the role would be played by a beautiful woman who would catch the eye of James Bond.

When the James Bond franchise got something of a reboot, Eva Green was offered the female lead of Casino Royale, but the actress actually turned down an audition initially. It seems she didn't have the highest opinion of the Bond Girl, and wasn't really interested in becoming one. According to Green...

To be fair, it seems Eva Green had no idea what she was actually saying no to when she was asked to consider the role. She saw the role as being something "prissy" that she had no desire to play. Once she had more of an idea of what the role actually was, she tells THR she became much more interested in it.

In the early James Bond movies most of the female roles were little more than sex objects that James would would either sleep with and/or rescue from the villain. There were always some exceptions to that rule, in some of the later films we saw actresses like Michelle Yeoh and Halle Berry take on roles of characters who were perfectly capable of fighting alongside James Bond, though the fact that they could do this might actually disqualify them from being "Bond Girls" depending on exactly how you define the term.

However, with Casino Royale the entire franchise saw a reboot. With that came a very different Bond in Daniel Craig and a very different sort of female lead. Eva Green's Vesper Lynd isn't another secret agent, but neither is she simply eye candy. She was one of the more complicated, and therefore more interesting, female lead's in the history of the franchise. She was so much more interesting that it's quite unfortunate that we lost her at the end of the film. Though the character's death went on to influence the rest of the Craig Bond films.

I for one am certainly glad that Eva Green joined Casino Royale as it's one of my favorite Bond films of all time and she's no small part of that. The next James Bond movie is finally moving toward production. Eva Green will be seen next in the new live action Dumbo.

With Daniel Craig’s tenure as James Bond soon coming to an end with the 2020 release of Bond 25, Hollywood has been having an ongoing conversation about who should replace the actor as the next 007. As movies are seeing success enlisting female heroines for popular franchises, some have even challenged that the character should be taken on by a woman next. Don’t count former Bond Girl Eva Green in on this idea. Here’s what she said:

Eva Green’s recent comments to Vanity Fair aren’t in bias to her husband's famous role; she has a powerful point here. James Bond is inherently a male character with a long history as such. To gender-swap the character isn’t necessarily a great move for inclusivity or female empowerment, because it ignores much of the roots of Ian Fleming’s literary character and has women potentially playing second fiddle to Bond’s legacy-- instead of finding their own place in the action genre.

Eva Green isn’t the first to challenge the idea of “Jane Bond”. Longtime James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli recently echoed the actress’ statement with the words “We don't have to turn male characters into women. Let's just create more female characters”, along with Rachel Weisz who questioned “Why not create your own story rather than jumping onto the shoulders and being compared to all those other male predecessors?”

Just as women may certainly be enraged to learn Wonder Woman, who is a character deeply rooted in the feminine was going to be played by a man next, people may look similarly on characters such as James Bond. Though I’d argue this certainly doesn’t apply to all gender-swap situations. The Ocean’s franchise isn’t particularly rooted in having to be “male”, so changing it up with a female-led team Ocean’s Eight was a fun way for the series to continue.

Eva Green moved on to discuss the iconic “Bond Girl”, a character that the actress is proud to be a part of evolving with her portrayal of Vesper in 2006’s Casino Royale. She is passionate about the females depicted alongside James Bond to continue developing away from the “bimbos” of the past and becoming “intelligent and sassy and fascinating” onscreen characters.

While Green will not star in Bond 25, the filmmakers are reportedly eyeing Lupita Nyong’o to be the next Bond Girl in the upcoming film helmed by Cary Fukunaga. Daniel Craig’s James Bond will return to theaters on April 8, 2020.

Of all the live action remakes of classic Disney animated movies on the way, Dumbo is one of the weirder ones. Directed by Tim Burton, this new take on the flying elephant with a heart of gold has been trying to put its cast together for a couple months, but haven't had much luck. Will Smith was approached to play the lead role, but talks broke off reportedly over salary and scheduling concerns. Not to be deterred, Disney is moving forward and looking for new talent, and one of the actors they're eyeing for a lead role is Casino Royale's Eva Green.

Deadline dropped the news today that Eva Green is in talks to play the new Dumbo movie's female lead. Subsequent reports differ on whether there will be three primary human characters or four co-starring alongside the digitally-created eponymous elephant, but in THR's write-up, it's mentioned that Green would play a trapeze artist who works for the head of the circus, a.k.a. Dumbo's main antagonist. If a deal is reached, this will be Green's third time working with Tim Burton, who previously directed her in Dark Shadows and Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children.

Eva Green is no stranger to the world of blockbusters. Along with the two Tim Burton features mention in the last paragraph, where she appeared as Angelique Bouchard and Miss Peregrine, respectively, the actress' notable credits include playing Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale, Serafina Pekkala in The Golden Compass, Artemisia in 300: Rise of an Empire and Ava Lord in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Dumbo would allow her to work more family-fare into her resume, though I can't help but wonder if this trapeze artist character would be another villain or befriend Dumbo despite the objections of her boss.

As for Dumbo's other characters, we have the previously-mentioned villain and the father of some small children who befriend the elephant. Will Smith was being eyed to play the father, but that didn't work out. Then according to THR, Disney was hoping Chris Pine would be game for the role, but those talks ended, too. As for the villain, Tom Hanks was reportedly being considered, but there's no official word on whether he took the job or not. Since the original Dumbo is one of Disney's shortest animated movies, this remake will have a lot of room to expand and deepen the story of the flying elephant who's made fun of for his big ears. There's still no word on whether there will be any wise-cracking mice or crows in this new version.

The cast of characters featured in Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children is expansive, and it lends to the film's entertainment value in a big way -- the ensemble showcasing a whole bunch of fantastic special abilities. Some are a bit less desirable, like having a monster mouth on the back of your head -- but other amazing gifts include controlling dead things, premonition dreams, and rapidly growing plants. Because of the wealth of options, choosing which amazing power you would want for yourself is an interesting challenge -- but that's why I put the question to the stars of the movie during a recent string of interviews.

I recently had the chance to sit down with the stars of Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children during the film's press day, and at the end of each interview I asked the stars which peculiarity they would want for themselves. Making the whole bit more fun, they all chose different abilities -- and you can find their answers below and on the next couple of pages...

Ella Purnell and Asa Butterfield

First up we have Ella Purnell and Asa Butterfield, who play Emma and Jake, respectively, in Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children. In the movie, their characters can control air and see invisible monsters, but they would individually choose very different abilities. Butterfield apparently would take no issue with having a hive of bees living inside him, feeling that it would appropriately intimidate anyone who comes at him wrong; while Purnell wishes she could have the abilities of the film's shapeshifting villain (a gift, I point out, would be very helpful in her professional acting career).

Eva Green

Unlike her Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children co-stars, Eva Green actually did choose an ability from her own character's power-set... though she only chose part of it. In her response to the question, the actress remarks that she would love the ability to fly, referencing Miss Peregrine's ability to turn into a Peregrine falcon in Tim Burton's movie. What she's leaving on the table, however, is her amazing power to create time loops -- which is what keeps the children in her school all-but-permanently trapped in the year 1943. Did Green choose the right half of her character's skills? I'll leave that for you to discuss in the comments.

Samuel L. Jackson

Finally we have Samuel L. Jackson, who plays the big, bad, eyeball-eating villain in Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children. As mentioned earlier, his character has the peculiar ability to shapeshift, which winds up being pretty damn scary in the movie. Unlike Ella Purnell, however, Jackson decided to go with the power possessed by the student Milton in the movie: invisibility. While you might think that's strange (like I did), as he professionally puts himself in front of a camera, it seems that the Oscar nominated actor just has certain moments in his life when he wishes that he could just disappear.

There are few directors who can mix endearing and weird quite as well as Tim Burton. Now, the man behind Big Fish and Edward Scissorhands is back with another story that looks to be equal parts sweet and scary. Check out the trailer for Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

The film stars a perfectly cast Eva Green as the titular Miss Peregrine. Green is able to play strong and sweet in equal measure and this role looks to be tailor-made for her. She runs a home which feels like the cultured English version of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. The description is even more fitting considering the screenplay was written by Jane Goldman, the screenwriter of X-Men: First Class.

Based on the series of books by Ransom Riggs, Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game) plays Jake, a boy who befriends the children at the house, but is apparently normal. Except he isn’t, of course. Some of the children have very X-Men like abilities like invisibility or being able to fly. Others, on the other hand, are just incredibly strange. Like this sweet little moppet with a second mouth on the back of her head.

There’s much more going on, however, as the children are being threatened and it’s Jake’s job to act as their protector. It’s unclear exactly what they want, but it appears that the forces of evil are being led by Samuel L. Jackson. He looks fairly peculiar himself, though we’re certainly being led to believe he’s not on our side. How can he be, with those eyes?

In addition to Eva Green and Samuel L. Jackson, the film also boasts a cast that includes Judi Dench, Rupert Everett, and Allison Janney. If you’re a fan of the visually spectacular style that Tim Burton is known for, then Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children looks to be right up that alley. The movie will certainly have its darkness but it also is full of bright and beautiful images.

With a release date of September 30, this could be exactly the movie we need to get us out of our post-summer blockbuster funk.

While we’re still waiting for Princess Diana to make her DC film debut in next summer’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Brothers is still moving full speed ahead on the Wonder Woman movie. With production planning to begin in November, it’s time to get to casting the rest of the players and word is they already have their eye on two great actors to play two great villains. Eva Green as Circe, the Sorceress and Sean Bean as Ares, the God of War.

Heroic Hollywood has broken the rumor and apparently some parts of it are more reliable than others. While the studio is interested in Bean and Green, they have not signed on and it's unclear if there have actually been talks with either. However, it does look like these are the villains that we'll see in the movie.

Eva Green has been putting together a pretty solid resume on TV and in the movies of late. Her role in 300:Rise of an Empire by itself looks like a resume to play a Wonder Woman villain. Circe is a sorceress who is capable of doing pretty much anything with magic. She can transform men into animals or transform herself into somebody strong enough to go up against Wonder Woman. She also has siren like abilities as she can magically attract and seduce men. We're pretty sure Green can pull that off. Our only fear would be that since we haven’t actually seen Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman yet, we’re afraid the hero might not be able to hold her own against Green on screen. If Wonder Woman ends up being as awesome as we want her to be then these two going head to head could be phenomenal.

Sean Bean as Ares, the God of War is another strong choice, even if it does predict Ares death at the end of the film. The man who was Ned Stark and Boromir should be able be a great God of War. Although, it is a bit of a demotion, as he played Zeus previously in the first Percy Jackson movie. DC's version of Ares is a god interested in plunging the world into eternal war. It's to combat this that Aphrodite creates the Amazon race, essentially making Ares the archenemy of Wonder Woman.

The two characters make sense as Wonder Woman’s first enemies since both are based on Greek mythological characters, and Wonder Woman herself draws much of her own history, as an Amazon, from the same place, so it would make sense to make her first antagonists come from that world. While we don’t know much about the script, what we have heard implies that the film will be some sort of origin story, so the enemies fit.

We’ll keep our eyes on this rumor to see if anything comes of it. If true it makes us even more excited for the Wonder Woman film. How about you?

From the haunted Vanessa Ives of Penny Dreadful to the fearless warrior Artemisia of 300: Rise of an Empire and the psychotic sexpot Angelique Bouchard of Dark Shadows, Eva Green is an actress who revels in the dark dance of macabre characters. So it should come as little surprise that she's said to be circling the title role in Tim Burton's in-development adventure Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Variety reports that Eva Green has entered into talks to headline Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, which Chernin Entertainment is producing. Adapted from the novel by Ransom Riggs, this movie is eying a production start date of February 2015. So Burton and his producers are likely eager to start locking down talent.

Should she sign on, Green would be reteaming with Burton for the first time since Dark Shadows. While critics appreciated her willfully campy portrayal in that big screen adaptation of the beloved television series, the film itself was reviled. Our own Eric Eisenberg said of it, "The movie is completely tone deaf – unsure if it’s a horror movie, a comedy or a drama – and never finds anything interesting in the characters for the audience to latch on to." Audiences seemed to concur. They largely shunned the Johnny Depp-fronted feature, so that the $150 mil production pulled in just $79 million domestic. And after an expansive ad campaign, the additional $165 mil it made overseas still marked Dark Shadows as a dud.

So, that leaves us wondering if Eva Green would want to reteam with Tim Burton. It might well depend on how meaty the role of Miss Peregrine is in the movie; in the book her role is at best a supporting part.

The novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children centers on 16-year-old Jacob Portman, who has long been enchanted by his grandfather's stories of the titular orphanage for unusual youngsters. After his grandfather is bizarrely murdered, Jacob treks to Wales to track down this Home for Peculiar Children. There he meets a batch of kids with incredible powers. But there's more to the world than these wondrous children, there's a dangerous band of monsters whom desperately wish to find these peculiarities. Jacob, entangled in their dilemma, may well be their only hope.

I've read Ransom Riggs' book, and honestly it reads like a book being written solely to sell the movie rights. The prose is underwhelming. The story is sloppy. And the book even includes "photos" of the children, as a sort of proof of concept. So when it was first reported Tim Burton had bought the rights, I was less than thrilled. Burton's not exactly the groundbreaking storyteller he once was, and by my count Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children needs some serious revisions to make it a compelling screenplay.

In early 2012, Jane Goldman (The Woman In Black) was hired to pen the script, which was a hopeful sign as she's also helped adapt engaging adventures like Stardust, Kick-Ass and X-Men: Days of Future Past. But no mention is made of her in the Variety article, so it's unknown if her script is still on the table. And with Burton directing, it's hard for me to be enthusiastic. So as an admirer of Eva Green, I'm hoping she steers clear.

A week ago the good folks at The Weinstein Company were told that their new poster for the upcoming film Sin City: A Dame To Kill For was a little too risque for public consumption. The one sheet, featuring Eva Green with nothing on but a sheer robe, a smile, and a revolver, managed to strike a nerve with the ever watchful Motion Picture Association of America, the non-elected body of governance and approval that rates films based on their content. Well some time has passed, and in a recent interview, Ms. Green has made some classy remarks on the whole situation.

In her interview with Vanity Fair, Eva Green politely addressed the controversy surrounding the poster bearing her barely clothed image. While she was polite, she point out the hypocrisy at play by stating:

The MPAA's crackdown on sexuality and profanity, but slightly blinder eye towards violence, has always been a subject that generates eyerolls, and the case of Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is no exception. In addition to rating the content of the movies themselves, the MPAA evaluates a film's promotional campaign, assigning an either red, yellow, or green band to a film's promotional materials. The poster, containing a less detailed but more revealing look at Eva Green's assets, was given a green band for general audience display. Meanwhile, the offending poster, which obscures detail and scale to a certain degree, has been given a formal reprimand.

So after all of the fuss and strife, what's The Weinstein Company to do with their film only a couple of months away from release, and their marketing campaign already in full swing? Well, obviously, a change will have to come, and it has in the form of a new version of the very poster that jostled some feelings on the MPAA's board. Thanks to the NY Post's Page Six, we have a look at the newly revised poster for Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, presented side by side with the original version. See if you can spot the difference.

The correct answer is, the opacity of her blouse has been increased, so as to hide the small hint of impropriety the MPAA has saved us from. It makes a huge difference, doesn't it? Without those watch dogs at the MPAA, we might have posters like this one for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo approved for official usage.

Wait a moment, that poster was approved for public usage, but Sin City: A Dame To Kill For needs to tone it down? Apparently, the version on display above is an example of "toning it down." The original poster for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo contained a smaller version of the release date, located around Rooney Mara's naval area and leaving her nude form unobstructed. When the controversy hit the fan, the only change that was made was making the release date bigger, and mostly obstructing the nudity on display. Again, big differences here.

Eva Green's body isn't a mystery to the movie going public, especially those who partook in this year's epic power fantasy 300: Rise Of An Empire. The original version of the poster, at least in my opinion, was just fine. It wasn't really showing anything off, and it was dark enough to be obscure. All the MPAA has done, as Ms. Green highlighted in her remarks, is give good publicity to a long standing foe of theirs. That "inappropriate" poster is probably adorning countless desktops, circulating though countless emails and message boards, and will probably pop up on eBay as an unofficial replica. So yeah, good show MPAA. You really taught them a lesson, didn't you?

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For will be released into theaters on August 22nd, 2014. It's rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sequences of strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and language throughout, and for some violence."

How can a poster for a movie called Sin City offer up a poster that’s too risqué? The word "Sin" is in the title! You better bring some edgy material, or fans won’t care. And yet, the MPAA rejected the above one-sheet showing Eva Green and her chest "for nudity." Imagine that.

The NY Post picked up on the story, reporting that the "curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown" was more than enough to ensure that this Sin City: A Dame to Kill For poster doesn’t make it to your local multiplex. Not that the poster is any less suggestive than past Sin City one-sheets featuring the likes of Jessica Alba or Rosario Dawson. Sex has always been used to sell Robert Rodriguez’s guns-and-babes franchise.

And it’s worth pointing out that the fact that Eva Green is holding a gun had no bearing on the MPAA's decision to label the Sin City: A Dame to Kill For poster inappropriate or possibly offensive to sensitive viewers. We can’t show kids or impressionable people the female body. But weapons, blood, or severed body parts are totally fine. Right, Saw 2?

The irony of the MPAA banning Eva Green’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For poster is that they are giving the movie – and the image – far more publicity than if they had just let it slide. I can almost guarantee that very few movie sites and news outlets would pick up on this relatively blasé one-sheet if not for the built-in MPAA controversy. Instead? It’s on the home page of almost every entertainment site you surf today. Robert Rodriguez really needs to send the MPAA a fruit basket.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is eyeballing an August 22 release date.

Penny Dreadful is slowly turning itself into one of our most anticipated new series to uncover. The latest, fullest (finally!) trailer for the Showtime series gives us a bit more than the creeps — and, at long last, actually gives us a look at the full cast (Look! There’s Reeve Carney! I spy a Billie Piper!) and horrifically unsettling storyline we're about to encounter. Things are about to go bump in the night.

“Do you believe there is a demi-monde? A half world between what we know and what we fear? A place in the shadows, rarely seen but deeply felt,” the now-familiar voiceover begins. But this time, things are different. “Where some unfortunate souls are cursed to live always.”

Twisted, contorted bodies, secret passageways, and devilish red eyes — all of it points to a “yes” to the question posed earlier. At least in the world of Penny Dreadful — and what a hyper-visual world it turns out to be.

Bugs, threesomes, portraiture (hey, we are dealing with Dorian Gray — Carney — after all), priests, creepy children, contortionism, spiders, possession, crawling adults, mystical-looking symbols, old-timey cameras, biting, sex, blood (so much blood), screaming, wolves, rain, high-pitched ringing, pale people, and vampire teeth (OK, maybe that last one’s a bit less scary at this point): also known as everything unsettling to ever happen in creepy storytelling, maybe ever. This series is kitchen-sinking it on the scary front — and, hopefully, with all that stuff a crafty and creepy story will arise.

Slated for a May 11, 2014 release, Penny Dreadful, is a horrific, dramatic look at some of literature’s most famous and terrifying characters — including Dr. Frankenstein and his little friend, Dorian Gray and his creepy portrait, and even some of Dracula’s buddies — as they become involved in some decidedly unsettling Victorian London doings. It stars a veritable smorgasbord of impressive actors, including Rory Kinnear, Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Billie Piper, and more. It was created, written and executive produced by John Logan and executive produced alongside Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris, with direction from J.A. Bayona (The Impossible) for the first two episodes.

English actor Jack O' Connell may be best known for playing party animal James Crook on the British teen drama series Skins. But underage drinking and neglectful parents aren't the concerns of his latest character. In 300: Rise of an Empire, O'Connell plays Calisto, a sixteen-year-old that early reports told us dreams of following in the footsteps of his father, a legendary warrior. In this sequel to the ultra-violent actioner 300, Calisto will lead a small army against the marred but still mighty forces of the vile Xerxes.

Legendary's twitter account has shared the above character poster as well as one of Eva Green's Artemisia. Each poster shows their hero smoldering yet ready for battle -- brandishing weapons and war cries, much like the Queen Gorgo poster unveiled earlier this week.

Though a new character to the world of this franchise, Artemisia seems poised to be a major one. For one thing, this 300 sequel was once retitled 300: Battle of Artemisia. Green was signed to the film shortly thereafter, but at the time the film's producers were playing coy about the name of her character, shielding us from her true importance. By 2012, the title had changed to 300: Rise of an Empire, but it was revealed the key battle would be that of Artemisium. This is a historic battle that actually occurred simultaneously along with Battle of Thermopylae, the battle shown in the first 300 film. We're talking late summer of 480 BC. Of course, we expect the real history of this story is based on will serve as a rough guideline for this sequel, but the actual battle was epic in its own right.

In it, an alliance of Greek city-states united against Xerxes and his Persian forces. An Athenian general named Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton in the movie) proposed a two-point plan to block Xerxes troops - one was the location for the first film, the other is the cape that will see battle in this sequel. In a massive naval assault that boasted more than 1000 ships, 300 ships are estimated to have been sunk or shipwrecked. Artemisia, pictured above, was one of the key figures in this catastrophic battle.

Known as Artemisia I of Caria, she was a queen who united with Xerxes on his conquest. She was also a commander of the Persian navy and a storied warrior in her own right, being the only female commander on record as well as one praised for her decisiveness, intelligence, and skill at steering her ally Xerxes. With qualifications like these, it's pretty easy to see how this historical figure demanded a role in this war-fueled 300 sequel.

300: Rise of an Empire will hit theaters on March 7th, 2014.

Showtime’s upcoming psychosexual literary horror mash-up Penny Dreadful is one of the more promising projects currently in preproduction stages, given the brains behind it are Academy Award-nominee John Logan and Academy Award-winner Sam Mendes. The network announced at the Television Critics Association’s Summer 2013 Press Tour that two of the series’ leads have been cast, and while you probably never could have predicted it, Eva Green and Josh Hartnett have signed on. Catching one actress in the uphill swing of her career and one actor whose commercial appeal has waned. If only we’d all have caught the wacky ass Bunraku in theaters!

According to ComingSoon, Green will star as Vanessa Ives, a Victorian London seductress whose beauty is only matched by her secret knowledge, and Hartnett will be playing a charming American, Ethan Chandler, for whom London becomes a waking nightmare. You see, this is a reimagining of the city as if the characters from horror novels were an actual part of the history, and the show’s more normal character have to deal with all the monstrous beings. We’ll get Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray, Mary Shelley’s Victor Frankenstein and his creature, as well as characters from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Had this horror mishmash been a theatrical release that Hartnett and Green joined, I don’t think I’d be quite as intrigued, but Showtime has a way of taking things to the extreme that I like.

It was announced last month that the first two episodes of this eight-episode series will be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, the Spanish director whose talent for awe-inspiring visuals was apparent in both of his features, 2007’s densely atmospheric horror The Orphanage and 2012’s harrowing tsunami flick The Impossible. To have a director like that working with Logan, who wrote and created the show (while Mendes is executive producing). Logan and Mendes worked together on Skyfall and will be doing so again for the next Bond film. That said, it doesn’t seem to be the kind of project that will gather an awards collection. But hey, look at what American Horror Story has been doing. Maybe Hartnett can find his inner Jessica Lange for this.

Hartnett has taken it slow since 2007’s 30 Days of Night, appearing in films like Girl Walks Into a Bar. He’ll next star in Roland Joffé’s time-and-continent-crossing romantic adventure Singularity and in Brian Horiuchi’s troubled couples drama Parts Per Billion.

Green, no stranger to James Bond herself, was in last year’s disappointing Dark Shadows and is making herself very familiar with CGI filmmaking with upcoming roles in Noam Murro’s 300: Rise of an Empire and the Robert Rodriguez/Frank Miller sequel Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For.

Looking to fill the horror void that Dexter will leave once this season is over, Showtime will begin production on Penny Dreadful this fall, with plans to air the show some time in 2014.

When we published the first official stills from 300: Rise of An Empire earlier this week, we learned a lot about the character being played by Eva Green - Artemesia, the commander of the Persian navy. We discovered that she has a personal vendetta against the Greeks, who killed her family when she was a child, and that she carries out most of Xerxes' dirty work while seeking revenge. What we didn't have, however, was an official image of her in costume. That changed today, thanks to the new issue of Entertainment Weekly (via Popculturology).

Green's presence in the film is interesting, largely because Zack Snyder's film didn't really feature any women in battle. Sure, Lena Headey's Queen Gorgo did play a significant part in the plot, however, she was all the way back in Sparta while King Leonidas and his army were fighting off the invading Persian forces. In the sequel it appears that Artemesia will be right at the center of all the action, and that's prominently displayed in this new image.

Directed by Noam Murro, who made his feature directorial debut in 2008 with the Dennis Quaid/Ellen Page dramedy Smart People, 300: Rise of an Empire a story parallel to the Battle of Thermopylae, when the Greeks fought off the Persians in the sea during the Battle of Artemisium. In addition to Green, the film also sees the return of Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes and also stars Sullivan Stapleton, Hans Matheson, David Wenham, Igal Naor, Callan Mulvey, Jack O'Connell, and Andrew Tiernan. Look for it in theaters on August 2nd.

Despite early reports that producers were eyeing Rachel Weisz to star opposite Johnny Depp in Rob Marshall's remake of the classic detective comedy The Thin Man, Deadline reveals the race for the film's female lead is wide open. Looking in earnest for the perfect Nora Charles, the lauded Chicago director will begin meeting next week with a long list of leading ladies, including: Eva Green, Amy Adams, Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, Kristen Wiig, Emily Blunt and Isla Fisher. Weisz is still in the mix, but now she's got some serious competition.

While each of the women above is beautiful and talented, the range in age and type here is slightly bewildering. In the original Thin Man film series, it was the elegant yet cute and warmly funny Myrna Loy who played Nora, the loving wife and willing partner-in-crime of William Powells' Nick Charles, a private investigator turned man of leisure who returns to his sleuthing roots when a curious mystery falls before him. It was a spirited premise that spun into five sequels, each throwing the banter-loving married couple into a new, comedy-laced adventure. And with a hero who is equal parts eccentricity and savvy, it's no surprise Depp has been pushing hard for The Thin Man's resurrection.

Now, let's parse through these casting possibilities. While Stone (Easy A) and Mulligan (Drive) are wonderfully charismatic and deservedly popular ingénues, at 23 and a baby-faced 26 respectively, they look too young to play the wife of 48-year-old Depp without things getting creepy. Of course Hollywood typically loves pairing older men with much younger women, but this is still an uncomfortable stretch. Even Powell was only 13 years Loy's senior. However, as I'd love to see either actress make her way into this comedy, let's hope Marshall is also looking to cast a younger woman for a yet-to-be revealed role.

As the for the rest, Green and Fisher seem to have a slight advantage as each has played a Depp love interest before, the former in the upcoming Dark Shadows and the latter in Gore Verbinski's animated adventure Rango. Yet Adams has never faltered as a winsome comedic performer and possesses an impressive resume filled with rollicking romances like Enchanted. Still, her Muppets co-star Blunt is better regarded for portrayals of sharp and sassy heroines, and so seems a wonderful fit for Nora. Of course, Wiig has shown a wacky appreciation for classic female character types on a variety of Saturday Night Live sketches and it would be intriguing to see her paired with Depp. Still, it's hard to shake the idea of the ever-graceful Weisz, who was silly while charming in The Brothers Bloom, as the enviably glamorous yet game Mrs. Charles.

Basically, it's difficult to predict who will walk away with the coveted role of Nora Charles. But lucky for us, Marshall has an embarrassment of riches to choose from, and none of the above would be a bad choice for to play Depp's marvelous better half.

You may recall that women didn't play a particularly large role in Zack Snyder's 300. Sure, Lena Headey had that sex scene with Gerard Butler in the first act, but 99% of that movie was scantily-clad men doing battle with other scantily-clad men. Hence why it's a bit of a surprise that one of the first casting announcements for the movie's follow-up, 300: The Battle of Artemisia, is for the lead actress.

THR has learned that Eva Green is now in talks to star in the 300 prequel. Noam Murro (Smart People) is attached to direct the project, which has yet to find its male lead. The movie will feature Xerxes and the Persians going up against yet another understaffed Greek army, only instead of King Leonidas leading the charge it will be a general named Themistokles. The trade also says that the battle in the prequel will be occurring at the same time as the major battle in the first film (I'm not really sure how that will work). Green's character is described as " a ruthless, gold-covered goddess who persuades Xerxes to amass his army and helps lead them into battle."

So will she basically have the same appearance as Angelina Jolie's character in Robert Zemeckis' Beowulf? If that 's the case, I am totally on board. Perverted jokes aside, Green is an immensely talented actress and while I find it hard to have too much hope for the prequel, getting her on board would definitely be a major plus.

Amid all the usual expected indies about fractured families and personal journeys undertaken by 20-something people at this year's Sundance Film Festival, there was Perfect Sense, a thriller starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green that seemed a lot more, well, fun than the other stuff. Nearly a year after that festival Perfect Sense is finally getting ready to come to theaters, and the film's first trailer has gone online at Yahoo!. You can watch it there or embedded below.

When you watch the trailer you get a better sense of how this works as a Sundance-y type drama-- though it's set in a world in which people are losing their senses one by one, it seems to be more of a romance between McGregor, whose character is the one literally losing his senses, and Green, who loves him anyway-- though apparently she eventually starts losing her own senses as well. The film has already been released in the UK, where it met at least one unpleasant review that called it "uncompromisingly daft," though another called it "astutely pitched" and "playful, yet also a serious and powerful musing on what makes us human." Either way you'll get to find out for yourself-- Perfect Sense come to theaters courtesy of IFC Films on February 3 next year. It might not be quite the critical success of Ewan McGregor's last film, Beginners, but it might be fun and romantic enough for those dark February months.

If there’s one thing a Tim Burton film always has, besides inexplicable eccentricities, it’s a powerful cast. His big break came when he directed Paul Reubens in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, based on one of the most popular kids shows at the time, and he’s been working with huge names like Johnny Depp, Michael Keaton, Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin ever since.

He’s continuing that trend in a major way with his next feature film Dark Shadows, an adaptation of the 1960s supernatural soap opera. Aside from Depp, Eva Green, Michelle Pfeiffer, chameleon Michael Sheen, and Jackie Earle Haley who have already signed on to the film, this week Burton added probably the biggest under-16 star, Chloe Grace Moretz, to the impressive cast that just keeps growing and growing.

Moretz just wrapped up Hugo Cabret with legend Martin Scorsese and is in production on Hick with Alec Baldwin and Blake Lively. Not that we haven’t already been seeing a lot of Moretz, she even appeared on NBC’s 30 Rock a few weeks ago, but it’s safe to say she won’t be going anywhere for a while and that’s alright with me.

Dark Shadows goes into production later this month (moved from its original January start date) and without a doubt is a perfect fit for Burton and Johnny Depp, who has been trying to usher this project to the big screen for quite some time. Described as being “vividly melodramatic”, Shadows should be a perfect fit for the cast as well as Burton whose films always have an over-the-top flare to them. Even the original score has been called “overly adventurous” which plays perfectly into the style of Danny Elfman who will undoubtedly score Burton’s film once again. Expect big, big fun from Dark Shadows upon its release next year.

Considering that Len Wiseman's Total Recall is set to start filming in May, the good folks behind the project may want to do something about casting. Guaranteed to be a high profile project - and one with a lot of components - Colin Farrell is the only name currently attached. Though we know that the story will be changed a bit from the 1990 Paul Verhoven version, going by the first film they still need to find actors to play the villainous Cohaagen and Richter, Benny, and George/Kuato, but it looks like they are starting with the women.

Deadline has received a list of actresses vying for the two lead female roles in the film. First there is Lori, played by Sharon Stone in the Verhoven flick, who is Quaid's wife who actually ends up trying to kill him. According to the site, both Kate Bosworth and Diane Kruger are being brought in to test for the role this week. As for the Melina, Quaid's ally and former lover who helps him free the people of Mars, Eva Mendes and Paula Patton are both reading for the part, though Jessica Biel and Eva Green are also possible options (Mendes is being considered for the part of Lori as well).

Not a bad list of actresses if you ask me (though I will admit some options are better than others). I've mentioned before that I am at least slightly curious how they will approach the story, and it appears that they are going at it with the best cast they can get. We'll be sure to report as we get more information.

Think you know Eva Green from The Golden Compass or maybe Casino Royale? Think again. Actually, if you’re a fan of the show Camelot, you might already have a sense of what Green is capable of. As she put it herself in an interview with Collider, her character isn’t evil, “I see her more as damaged,” and that idea of misinterpreted malevolence is certainly present in Green’s latest film, Cracks.

Green plays Miss G, a teacher and diving coach at an all-girls boarding school. She is so close to the girls on her team, she practically becomes like a mother to them – or maybe a sister – or perhaps a friend. That’s exactly Miss G’s problem; she has a hard time figuring out how close is too close, and when she’s pushing the limits when it comes imparting her own philosophies on the girls. When she gets a new recruit, a young Spanish girl named Fiamma (Maria Valverde), Miss G’s boundaries crumble entirely and the results are devastating.

This role would certainly be a challenge for any actress, but director Jordan Scott was confident enough in her abilities to forgo the audition process and go straight for Green. Still, being able to bring Miss G to life was going to take a lot of time and energy from every front – rehearsals, hair and makeup, wardrobe and more. In honor of the film’s March 18th release, Green sat down to tell us all about inhabiting Miss G’s twisted mind. Check it all out in the video interview below.

After years of waiting, yesterday marked the day that Johnny Depp finally got some co-workers for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows when it was announced that Jackie Earle Haley and Bella Heathcote had entered negotiations to play in the film. The rule of threes, however, demands that there be one more name involved and ta-da! Today the third puzzle piece falls into place.

Deadline is reporting that Eva Green, who hasn't done a studio film since the amazing James Bond reboot Casino Royale, is now in talks for the female lead in Dark Shadows. Based on the 1960s horror series about the Collins family and their estate, Green is in line to play Angelique, a powerful witch that has a love-hate relationship with the vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Depp. The production is currently scheduled to begin filming this April.

It was just a little more than a month ago that I was lamenting the recent lack of Eva Green in movies, but this is a perfect project for her to get back in the game with. The actress' style is perfect for a gothic period piece, so much so that I'm wondering why Tim Burton hasn't tried to work with her before. Dark Shadows is already shaping up quite nicely and it would be great if those years of hard work pay off.

Here’s a quick rundown of everything we know about The Dark Knight Rises: all the principals, from Christian Bale to Gary Oldman will be returning; Christopher Nolan is the director; the script was written by Jonathan Nolan; Tom Hardy has been added to the cast; neither The Riddler nor The Joker will be in the film; there are two female leads, one a villain, the other a romantic interest; and the title is The Dark Knight Rises. Absolutely everything else, however, is completely up in the air. The script is undoubtedly under security that rivals Fort Knox, the Nolan’s continue to be the most secretive dudes in the industry and nobody official is giving away any details. Until we do start getting official announcements, however, we’re simply going to have to make do with rumors and speculation, and we have three new ones for you today.

Collider has been in contact with some unnamed sources who have clued them into some details about the production, from the casting of the female roles to what we may see on the Batcave/Batmobile front in the last film of the trilogy.

Kicking things off, one of the sources says that former Bond girl Eva Green and Naomi Watts have officially signed on to the film, and while the source isn’t certain, it is believed that they will be playing the roles of Vicky Vale (fans may recognize her as the character played by Kim Basinger in Tim Burton’s Batman) and Talia al Ghul (daughter of Ra’s al Ghul, played by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins). It is expected that Vale will be the love interest while al Ghul is the villain, but the story doesn’t specify which actress will play which role.

The next rumor in the set of three is that production will run from May 6 to November 28. This rumor is easily the most believable, as Michael Caine suggested those exact dates back in November when he said that he would be receiving the script in January.

Lastly comes the matter of the new the Batcave and Batmobile (a.k.a. The Tumbler). Fans know that Bruce and Alfred have been hard at work on the new secret lair since the end of Batman Begins when it’s suggested that they improve the foundations in the south-east corner of Wayne Mansion. As for the Caped Crusader’s car, it was blown up while blocking a rocket launcher in The Dark Knight. So what’s going to happen in The Dark Knight Rises?
