<dc:description> <p><strong>The Background</strong>: Nick Venable is an Assistant Managing Editor, and the TV Editor. His humble origin story with CinemaBlend began all the way back in the pre-streaming era, circa 2009, as a freelancing DVD reviewer and TV recapper. After rising up through the ranks covering Movies, Nick leapfrogged over to the small screen to cover more and more television news and interviews, eventually taking over the section for the current era. Born in Louisiana and currently living in Texas — Who Dat Nation over America’s Team all day, all night — Nick spent several years in the hospitality industry, and also worked as a 911 operator. And if you ever happened to hear his music or read his comics/short stories, you have his sympathy.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p><strong>What He's Into</strong>: Nick is one of those people who won’t necessarily insert a Monty Python reference into every conversation, but is still mentally equipped to do so. Beyond such appreciation for surreal UK comedy, Nick also indulges in as much horror splendor as possible, from Stephen King novels to James Tynion IV comics to Freddy Krueger one-liners to all things Mike Flanagan. Throw in a dash of NFL, some 311 and Weird Al, fried crawfish poboys, bourbon, ‘90s-era pro wrestling, crossword puzzles and mystery-driven video games, and baby, you got a stew going. (Nick will insert an Arrested Development reference into every conversation, if possible.)</p>
<p><br></p>
<p><strong>What He's Excited About</strong>: Anything Jeff Lemire, Tom King and W. Maxwell Prince think of, ever. More of Kelly Reilly’s deliriously fierce performances on Yellowstone. HBO’s The Last of Us. Clone High’s return. Colin Farrell’s Penguin being in every movie/TV show/breakfast cereal.</p> </dc:description>

<dc:description> <p><strong>The Background</strong>: Mike Reyes is the Senior Movie Contributor at CinemaBlend, though that title’s more of a guideline really. Passionate about entertainment since grade school, the movies have always held a special place in his life, which explains his current occupation. Writing in some way, shape, or form since fifth grade, Mike’s time at CinemaBlend started in 2014, when he was hired as a freelance writer. In 2019, Mr. Reyes became a full time fixture of the CB staff, a decision that the management still hotly debates to this very day, questioning whether it was “a good idea, or the best idea?” Mike graduated from Drew University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, but swore off of running for public office a long time ago. You can hear him on various podcasts, you just need to know where to look.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p><strong>What He's Into</strong>: This is a tough question to answer, as Mike’s kind of into a lot of things. Most prominently, he is CinemaBlend’s James Bond expert, thanks to being raised with a healthy appreciation for the storied spy series and anything espionage related. Mike has several other specialized fields that he’s been passionate about since his early years. Among those interests are breaking down the ins and outs of time travel, studying and admiring Large Scale Aggressors, Titans, Kaiju, and dinosaurs; as well as detective work. Adjacent to his entertainment interests, Mr. Reyes enjoys the worlds of high end mens fashion (eyewear included), fine alcohol and cocktails, and the comforts of a good book or video game. If you ask nicely, he might even dip back into his experience as a singer, just for fun.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p><strong>What He's Excited About Right Now</strong>: The continuing hunt for the new James Bond, any and all updates about how Adam Wingard and Dan Stevens are turning Godzilla vs. Kong 2 into a stealth sequel to The Guest, and the potential for Tron: Ares to somehow be the sequel Tron: Ascension was promised to be. Also, a good excuse to be sent on another theme park assignment, and anything Guillermo del Toro has cooking,</p> </dc:description>

This year could go on the record as the most ambitious year for Netflix Originals, as the streaming provider is looking to add 80 original films to its stable throughout 2018. Now that'll obviously be a mixture of originals produced exclusively for the kingdom of the red envelope, as well as acquisitions that the subscription streaming service will sign deals for with studios like Paramount, etc. But between both of those options, it's set to be a banner year for Netflix.

With that in mind, we'd like to offer this handy guide to keep track of what's come before, and what's headed our way down the road. After all, 80 movies is a lot to keep track of, and with Netflix being a sort of high volume / low advertising budget sort of operation, you might not know some of these movies are coming until they wind up in your queue. So take a look at the rundown below, just to make sure that one special movie you've been looking forward to hasn't passed you by.

January 2018 Releases

Before I Wake -
It has been one year since Workaholics went off the air at Comedy Central, and a large segment of its audience has felt the absence of Blake, Anders, and Adam. That said, the creative trio clearly still wants to keep working together, albeit in the feature film realm. To accomplish that end, they have once again teamed up with Workaholics director and frequent co-star Kyle Newacheck for their first movie together: Netflix's Game Over, Man! Sadly, the film ultimately squanders a promising premise with gross-out humor, painfully unfunny set pieces, and an army of unlikable characters.

At its core, Game Over, Man! is a sendup of Die Hard, and it proudly wears that label on its sleeve. The film focuses on Alexxx (Adam Devine), Joel a.k.a "Baby Dunk" (Blake Anderson), and Darren (Anders Holm), three losers wasting their lives away as maids in a swanky Los Angeles hotel. They don't have much going for themselves in life, and they know it. Much of their day-to-day life is spent dreaming of fame and fortune while numbing themselves to the reality of their own existences -- mainly Darren, who has an affinity for tripping on salvia during work hours. However, when an insanely wealthy social media star named Bey Awadi (Utkarsh Ambudkar) throws a party at the hotel, the crew sees an opportunity to break free from their impoverished lives by pitching him a high-tech video game that they've been working on in secret. From there, things take a violent turn when terrorists led by Conrad Drothers (Neal McDonough) burst in and hold the party ransom -- leading to a game of cat and mouse in which our heroes must embrace their inner John McClane and save the hostages.

It's an easy-to-understand premise, but the "Die Hard in a hotel" framework falls apart because of how much Game Over, Man! feels obligated to highlight its action genre inspirations. Not only does this movie pay clear homage to John McTiernan's 1988 classic, but it also takes multiple opportunities to explicitly call out the fact that something happening on the screen is just like Die Hard. The result is a poor man's imitation of a classic, albeit with way more dick jokes thrown into the mix.

One thing that fans of this creative ensemble will likely note is the fact that Game Over, Man! bears a striking resemblance to the classic "Office Campout" episode of Workaholics in terms of its premise and its tone, and that's very much by design. However, it is also missing one core element that made the Workaholics version of this narrative resonate with fans: a sense of likability. Game Over, Man! is a mean-spirited movie that only seems interested in shocking the audience with its crass vulgarity, but it seems utterly disinterested in giving us any real reason to care about the main three heroes or see them succeed.

The main character problem that plagues Game Over, Man! also stands out as an issue that affected the later seasons of Workaholics. The film wants these characters to feel like everyman heroes, but it does not attempt to humanize them or make them believable. Holm, Anderson, and Devine (especially Devine, in fact) play their characters incredibly broad to the point that they're more grating than loveable.

In fact, they all boil down to simple, one-sentence explanations. Joel is secretly gay (that's his entire arc), Darren is smart but wholly incapable of doing anything without drugs, and Alexxx is a buffoon with no self-awareness. That's pretty much it as far as dimensions go for each of them, and there's nothing tangible to connect to that makes them feel like real people. It's not that we want to see them die, but whether or not they win feels moot by the time the movie ends.

Sadly, we can also say the same for the supporting cast, which includes Home Alone's Daniel Stern as an insufferably perverted hotel manager, and Shooter's Rhona Mitra, who plays a psychotic henchwoman with a penchant for dismembering men.

The only two characters in the film with a shred of entertainment value or Neil McDonough's Conrad (the Arrow-verse star is clearly having a blast channeling his inner Hans Gruber) and Aya Cash's Cassie -- a by-the-book hotel employee with a hidden dark side. They show promise as comedic personalities, but they're sorely underused by a film that seems intent on taking the low road at every possible opportunity.

Does this mean that you will never laugh once if you watch Game Over, Man!? Not necessarily. There are a few solid jokes to be had throughout the run of the film, most of which come from the vast array of celebrity cameos that we see at the party -- Fred Armisen, Jillian Bell, and Shaggy all come to mind. Additionally, there are some slapstick gags (specifically, the first real fight in the film) that do deliver the shock value that the film is aiming for in most of these moments. That said, the ratio of what Game Over, Man! throws at the wall vs. what actually works on a purely comedic level is way off, and there's a painful no man's land to cross if you want to get from one good laugh to the next.

Though it's great to see the Workaholics guys back together again after the conclusion of their Comedy Central series, we just wish they had a better movie to spark their reunion. Game Over, Man! is dull, plodding, not particularly funny, and it squanders an abundance of proven comedic talent by leaning into crass bits that don't generate nearly enough laughs.

The Workaholics guys have officially jumped into the movie business with Netflix's Game Over, Man! That said, it looks like the upcoming send-up of Die Hard has some notable roots in their TV years. Specifically, CinemaBlend recently sat down with Blake Anderson to talk about the inspiration for the film, and he explained that its seeds were first planted when they shot the classic "Office Campout" episode of their beloved Comedy Central workplace sitcom. Anderson explained:

I think that was like when the seed of the whole idea of maybe making a movie that was set in an action world, I think that's where it happened. I think there was such a positive response to that episode, and even while we were filming it, it was like 'Wow this is kind of cool to have those stakes, like we are in real trouble.' It's really fun to have that kind of energy and nerves and excitement and being able to bounce comedy off of those feelings. Being able to fall back on that real emotion. It feels like a prime spot for a movie. I would say that is it right there. That's the seed and here's the flower.

There are some clear similarities between "Office Campout" and Game Over, Man! Both take place over the course of a single evening, and both follow the three main heroes as they attempt to survive and fight back in the face of a group of bad guys who invade their place of business. The similarities are not lost on the Workaholics crew, and as Blake Anderson explained to CinemaBlend, the work done on Game Over, Man! was very much inspired by the experience of working on that classic episode.

The "Office Campout" episode of Workaholics is also famous for offering up one of the best jokes in the entire series. Specifically, it's the episode that sparked the famous "Catherine Zeta-Jones, she dips beneath the lasers" Entrapment spoof song that became a fan-favorite moment from Season 1. Check it out, below.

Having said that, there are some differences between Game Over, Man! and "Office Campout" that help create a distinction between the two stories. Most notably, the Netflix film has real stakes, and the threat to the three heroes is very real. By contrast, the "Office Campout" episode was a more offbeat story in which the threat was only in their heads, induced by ingesting too many mushrooms. Moreover, given the fact that Game Over, Man! is a Netflix property, they're allowed to get away with far more risqué and outlandish premises, such as Adam Devine going fully nude. Now, with the release of Kyle Newacheck's Game Over, Man! later this week, it seems that the streaming platform's next original film has once again embraced that idea. In fact, in one sequence in the movie, star Adam Devine does full frontal nudity, and while the prospect of such a scene might intimidate some actors, Devine recently sat down with CinemaBlend and explained that he had six whole years to get ready for the nudity because it was always the plan for him to go through with it. The Pitch Perfect star told us:

We wrote this movie for the first time like six years ago. So it's been going through different incarnations since then. There's only two scenes that made it through absolutely every draft. It was the Shaggy scene and my dick hanging out scene. So I had years to get used to the idea. So by the time I did it, it wasn't even a thing. I was so fine with it.

For Adam Devine, it sounds like the fact that he was going to show full frontal nudity in Game Over, Man! was made easier because the movie went through six years of development before he had to go through with it finally. Male nudity is a somewhat rare sight in mainstream films (at least relative to female nudity), so the fact that Devine decided to commit to the gag is fairly noteworthy.

There was also never a question of whether or not it would be Adam Devine to pull off the scene in question. Elsewhere in our conversation with the Workaholics alumni about the decision to do the scene, Devine explained that his character in Game Over, Man! was written in such an insane way that made him the natural choice to do it. Devine continued:

My character in the film is the most insane. He's the craziest one. And also I probably am the only one of the three of us that would do it. So it worked.

Aside from the full frontal nudity, Adam Devine also noted that there was one other scene in the film that made it through every incarnation of the script. The film features a wide array of celebrity cameos ranging from Portlandia's Fred Armisen to Scrubs' Donald Faison and Workaholics alumni/22 Jump Street star Jillian Bell, and musician Shaggy is one of the many celebrities to show up at the party. He is one of the hostages seen multiple times throughout the movie, and the creative team always knew that they wanted to include him in a sequence.

Game Over, Man! stars Adam Devine, Blake Anderson, and Anders Holm as a trio of maids stuck in a Die Hard-esque scenario when a group of terrorists takes over their hotel in Lost Angeles. In addition to bringing all three of the main Workaholics actors back together for their first feature, the movie is also the directorial debut of Workaholics writer/director Kyle Newacheck.

Game Over, Man! will drop on Netflix later this week on March 23.

It's a passion that the content chief, Ted Sarandos, has made incredibly clear in recent remarks that stated at least 80 new films will be heading to Netflix's streaming library as exclusive originals. That's a hell of an order, but with some of the titles that are already slated for 2018 and beyond, it's not an impossible dream.

In fact, with the following 18 titles in mind, you're going to want to keep an eye out for what's on the horizon, especially since you'll be able to see some of these titles within the coming weeks. So open your calendar and prepare to mark down the following films for your entertainment pleasure.

Before I Wake

Mike Flanagan's Before I Wake is a perfect example of a movie that had an unusually hard time finding a platform for release. With its previous studio home delaying and eventually cancelling its release during its bankruptcy woes, the Kate Bosworth/Thomas Jane-starring film has been released pretty much everywhere except for in the U.S. But presumably around the time Flanagan made his deal to direct the Netflix adaptation of Gerald's Game, the streaming giant must have known they were the right home for this almost missing Mike Flanagan movie. So naturally, if there's a new Flanagan horror flick around the corner, we're going to want to see it.

Release Date: January 5th, 2018

The Polka King

When you put Jack Black in the sweet spot between comedy and tragedy, the man is a genius. He'd proven it previously in Richard Linklater's Bernie, and he looks like he's about to do it again with the Netflix Original The Polka King. Based on the true story of Jan Lewan, the polka king-turned-investment defrauder, the film looks like a dark comedy that borders on a sobering drama, as we see the deception progress from fruitful criminality to crippling failure before our eyes. Of course, we're also excited to see Black playing in the same sandbox as Jenny Slate, Jason Schwartzman and JB Smoove, too, so that's an added bonus to an already intriguing real life crime story.

Release Date: January 12th, 2018

Step Sisters

Much like Before I Wake before it, Step Sisters was supposed to make a big theatrical debut, only to find itself without a home once its distributor started to close up shop. If you took the competitive nature of Bring It On, but crossed it with a film like Step Up or Stomp The Yard, you'd get what Step Sisters is looking to do to the landscape of Netflix originals. Starring Dylan Minnette from Don't Breathe, the film focuses on a small, isolated town where the titular house resides and is currently for sale. But all it took was one open house to let in a dangerous presence that will terrorize Minnette's protagonist and his mother. This movie looks to be a slow burn thriller that leads to a rather intense finish, with an apparent conspiracy of some sorts taking place among some of the townspeople through the middle. A common problem with said Oscar category is that the picks are not usually given a lot of screening time with awards judges, meaning there's usually an early frontrunner when even one of them starts to make a noise. Freeman plays a single father who has to save his baby during the zombie apocalypse, but there's a catch: he's infected and slowly turning into one of the undead himself. Not only does this sound thrilling, but if it's anything like the source material, we're going to need some tissues on hand for the finale.

Release Date: TBD 2018

Come Sunday

Religion is always a hot button issue, no matter how you slice it. The film has wrapped production, and is just waiting for a primed release date to tell the world its epic and bloody story.

Release Date: TBD

The action-comedy genre has produced some true classics, but it's still very hard to do well and often results in mediocre movies. Likewise, it's even harder for spoof films to impress audiences. So it is with great enthusiasm I watch the trailer for Netflix's upcoming original film, Game Over, Man! This movie comes from and stars the guys behind Workaholics, and it looks to be a hilarious action-comedy that tells its own story while simultaneously referencing and making fun of the classics of the genre. To say anymore would spoil it, so go ahead and watch the trailer below.

The way this thing starts is amazing. Like all great spoofs, this trailer begins on a serious note with a hostage situation at a Los Angeles hotel. But as soon as we see Shaggy is one of the hostages, the hilarity begins as the three leads begin to sing his seminal song, "It Wasn't Me." Using the song as the soundtrack of the trailer is amazing and works surprisingly well for the action that follows. The pop culture and action movie references throughout are great and provide some of the trailer's laugh-out-loud moments. The hilarious dynamic among Adam Devine, Black Anderson and Anders Holm is just what you would expect from the trio, and is just as goofy and brotherly as it was in Workaholics.

Adam Devine has described Game Over, Man! as Die Hard, but with three idiot John McClanes, and that is definitely what we see here. This movie looks like it will tackle all of those action movie tropes in a hilarious fashion as the heroes fail upwards in their attempts to thwart the villains. The three leads even wind up in the classic John McClane uniform of a filthy, bloodstained undershirt. I wouldn't be surprised if they lose their shoes, too. The bad guys all in black suits, the badass female villain, it's all there. Even the title of the film is a reference to Bill Paxton's iconic and meme-able line from Aliens. It's fun to see this action-comedy going meta and referencing other iconic action films as the heroes in their ineptitude attempt to match what they saw in the movies.

One element of the film that is not in the trailer is that, according to the plot synopsis, the three maids/housekeepers are developing their own video game on the side, and the man financing it is one of the hostages. Perhaps this video game element will explain their confidence in this situation and should lead to some hilarious moments as they find out the difference between a first-person shooter and actually being shot at.

Fans of Comedy Central's Workaholics will have every reason to be confident in this film. In addition to Adam Devine and Blake Anderson, Anders Holm both stars in and is the screenwriter on Game Over, Man! Another Workaholics alum, Kyle Newacheck, is the director on the film. Game Over, Man! arrives on Netflix on March 23. But what about Die Hard with Stoned Idiots? I think that's how we can describe Game Over, Man!, a Netflix comedy that just dropped its first bit of footage.

Fans of the deceased Comedy Central show Workaholics will recognize the three dudes at the center of Game Over, Man! And just typing that makes me sad, because that phrase belongs to the beloved Bill Paxton, who left us too soon. But just by using that phrase as its title makes me think that Game Over, Man! will lampoon several different types of action classics, even though Adam Devine once described it as "Die Hard, but with three idiot John McClanes."

The official plot synopsis goes something like this. Characters played by Adam Devine, Anders Holm and Blake Anderson are low-level maids at a downtown L.A. hotel who have created their own video game on the side, and are about to get it fully financed. Unfortunately, trouble sparks when the man who's bankrolling their endeavor gets kidnapped by terrorists during a hostile takeover. Now it's up to these buffoons to stop the terrorists and rescue the hard-partying billionaire so he can continue to fund their dream of creating an original video game. High stakes!

One reason why we're excited about the Netflix original production of Game Over, Man! is that it's being produced by Scott Rudin, as well as Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Could this be the next equivalent of Pineapple Express, as well as Die Hard? That Seth Rogen movie expertly blended the Lethal Weapon tropes into a weed comedy, and it sounds like Game Over, Man! is trying to do the same with the Die Hard formula.

The problem is, we have to wait almost a full year to see how Game Over, Man! turned out. Netflix plans to release it on April 20, 2018 (get it? 4/20?!) While we thought we'd seen every possible permutation, this one is new. Adam Devine describes his new film, with his Workaholics co-stars, as Die Hard with complete morons. It's certainly a twist we certainly haven't seen before.

While Adam Devine will next be seen in the comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, which opens in theaters today, he's also the co-star of Comedy Central's Workaholics. While fans of the series may be heartbroken to know that the next season of that series is likely to be its last, there is a silver lining. Adam Devine tells Entertainment Weekly that he, along with co-stars Blake Anderson and Anders Holm, are working on a feature film, titled Game Over, Man, which is planning to go into production early next year. Based on Devine's synopsis of the plot, we're certainly curious.

It's very much an action comedy. We're three maids that work in a hotel and it gets taken over by terrorists. It's sort of Die Hard, but with three idiot John McClanes.

First off, the fact that Adam Devine describes their characters as "maids" rather than "housekeepers" or something more general already has us wondering what this setup is going to be. What hotel still refers to their cleaning staff as maids? We have to assume that this is a place where male cleaners is not the norm, making the hotel itself a curious place to set a movie. Of course, the unorthodox nature of the hotel may be why it is targeted by terrorists.

In the original Die Hard, Bruce Willis' John McClane has a chance to fight the bad guys simply because he gets overlooked and the robbers don't know that he's there. It would make sense this could happen to a couple of "maids" in a large hotel. But if you don't actually have the skill to do anything to fight terrorists, what happens then?

While the setup is very different from Workaholics, we have to assume that the comedy will be similar, as it comes from the same minds. Are these the people you want trying to save you from terrorists?

Game Over, Man certainly sounds like an interesting concept. We'll have to wait and see how it turns out. Do you think a feature film from the brains behind Workaholics is the movie you've been waiting for?
