In case you thought the finale of The X-Files' second revival season was the end of the road for the world of monsters, aliens, and conspiracies, Ryan Coogler has a treat in store for you. The Academy Award-winner's reboot of the classic Fox series has officially cast a Black Mirror alum for its second lead, and comments from original leading lady Gillian Anderson have me even more optimistic about the project and its early pilot order from Hulu.

The Cast Of Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files

News broke back in February that The Bear’s Danielle Deadwyler had been cast as one of two very different but highly decorated FBI agents who are assigned to a long-shuttered division involving unexplained phenomena, a.k.a. the X-Files that stymied David Duchovny’s Mulder and Gillian Anderson’s Scully for a quarter century. The question then was of who would be Deadwyler’s co-lead, as many fans of the original show would likely argue that it was the legendary chemistry between Duchovny and Anderson that kept it going through eleven seasons and two movies rather than the increasingly convoluted conspiracies.

Now, we have our answer: Deadline reports that Himesh Patel has signed on for the reboot, with Ryan Coogler still on board to write and direct the pilot. At the time of writing, it’s not clear whether the new show will follow the model of the original series with a skeptical female agent partnering with a believer male agent, but Patel’s work in projects like Black Mirror, Tenet, and even The Franchise (seen below) have me hoping that he’ll be the believer a la Mulder… although perhaps without as much sister-related trauma.

The British Indian actor comes to the new take on The X-Files with more TV experience than most thanks to ten seasons of EastEnders on the U.K. side of the pond, amounting to nearly 600 episodes of the iconic soap opera. He contributed to another classic British franchise with some voice roles in Doctor Who, and he landed a role in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. On the streaming side, he will return to the Enola Holmes world as Dr. Watson opposite Millie Bobby Brown when the third movie releases on Netflix later this year.

Why Gillian Anderson Has Me More Optimistic Than Ever

I’ve been on board with Ryan Coogler’s reboot from the beginning, not least because having the Sinners filmmaker at the helm rather than original series creator Chris Carter could only be good for refreshing the world of Mulder and Scully, whether or not those two ever appear in the show. (No, I’m still not over that seriously WTF finale from back in 2018, written and directed by Carter. It did not make my list of the best X-Files episodes.) Having Coogler at the helm, with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as stars, sounded all well and good in a vague, general sense.

But getting some details about the project from Gillian Anderson really ramped up my excitement. Speaking at Awesome Con, she doubled down on her previous comments about Coogler being the “perfect person” for a reboot, describing him as “such a cool guy and so talented” and sharing that she’s had “a few conversations” with him. She went on:

For me, this is a whole lot more meaningful than comments from Chris Carter or David Duchovny would be, because Gillian Anderson was the first to indicate that she was going to be done with The X-Files after Season 11. Plus, given that she played a character who famously did not have an open mind to a lot of Mulder's wildest theories, I get a kick out of the actress conveying that message for Ryan Coogler's project.

Why Gillian Anderson Seemed So Done With The OG X-Files

Back in 2017, Gillian Anderson's comments about moving on from Scully and The X-Files were discouraging for fans who were still looking ahead to Season 11 in 2018. That changed for me once the season did hit the airwaves, however, when the premiere penned by Chris Carter delivered a devastating twist about something that had been done to Scully, followed by the Season 11 finale ending with Scully pregnant again after going through more mysterious health crises.

The character deserved a break, and if the series had to literally go off the air for it to happen... well, it was an understandable choice for the actress who played Scully through so much pain and suffering. Then, in late 2025, she got even more candid about leaving the show while chatting with Duchovny on his Fail Better podcast:

Would it have been nice if The X-Files ended with confirmation that Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) had survived his finale ordeal, and perhaps given an update on John Doggett, a.k.a. Robert Patrick's favorite role of his career? Sure. But all in all, it's easy to understand why Gillian Anderson didn't want to continue that trajectory on the show.

All of which is to say that if she's this complimentary of Ryan Coogler's take on The X-Files, to the point of having multiple conversations with him, reading the pilot, and not ruling out the possibility of reprising her role as Scully, then I can have faith in what he plans to do with it. At the time of writing, David Duchovny hasn't commented on the castings or the pilot, while Chris Carter is on board as an executive producer.

Of course, there might be reasons for existing fans of The X-Files to start getting nervous about the project coming to Hulu. The planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer seemed to have everything going for it, including Oscar winner Chloé Zhao at the helm and original series star Sarah Michelle Gellar on board. It came as a shocker when news broke that Hulu wasn't moving forward on more Buffy. If that could happen with Buffy and Chloé Zhao, what about The X-Files and Ryan Coogler?

Only time will tell, at this point! As the wait continues for more news on the pilot, you can always revisit the original run of The X-Files streaming with a Hulu subscription and/or via a dedicated Pluto channel.

As demonstrated through five years of making The Crown – a series featuring the likes of Claire Foy, Matt Smith, Vanessa Kirby, Oliva Colman, Helena Bonham Carter, Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce and many more – Peter Morgan knows how to put a stellar ensemble cast together, and it appears that he is once again utilizing that skill for his next project. The veteran writer will soon be starting production on a new adaptation of author Ira Levin's 1976 novel The Boys From Brazil, and he has brought together some phenomenal talent to tell the dramatic story on screen.

According to Variety, Netflix is officially moving forward with Morgan's limited series, which will have a five-episode run, and the cast that has been brought together includes Jeremy Strong, Gillian Anderson, Shira Haas, Daniel Brühl, August Diehl, and Lizzy Caplan. Anderson's inclusion is notable, as she previously worked with the showrunner playing Margaret Thatcher in Seasons 3 and 4 of The Crown, but it's also noteworthy that this will be the third time that Brühl and Diehl have worked together (the other two titles being Inglourious Basterds and The King's Man).

Jeremy Strong – who has recently been working on The Social Reckoning with writer/director Aaron Sorkin – will be playing Yakov Liebermann, a Holocaust survivor who makes it his life mission to search the globe for Nazi fugitives and bring them to justice (the character inspired by the legendary work of Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal). In the decades-spanning story, a plot is uncovered that sees a scientist named Dr. Johann-Friedrich Meinhardt (August Diehl) is living in South America and working on an experiment to create biological clones of Adolf Hitler.

This marks the second time that The Boys From Brazil has been adapted, as directed Franklin J. Schaffner previously helmed a 1978 feature memorably starring Gregory Peck, James Mason, and Laurence Olivier. The series is Peter Morgan's first project since The Crown concluded in 2023 – his filmography also including standout titles such as Frost/Nixon (based on his play of the same name), The Last King Of Scotland, The Queen, and Rush.

Filming of the new limited series will be an international affair, as production is set to begin next month and will take place in the UK, Germany, Bulgaria and Spain. Unfortunately, one bit of information we don't presently have is a targeted release date (the earliest it could arrive for Netflix subscribers is probably late 2026).

Given all of the talent involved, one expects that this will be a very high-profile project on Netflix's upcoming slate, so stay tuned for more updates about the project as it moves further through development and we get more news about what's in store.

The X-Files was a pop culture juggernaut back in the heyday of the ‘90s, but ended with more of a whimper than a bang with Season 11 under creator Chris Carter back in 2018. It seems unlikely at this point that the series will get another revival with original stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, but longtime fans are getting a treat from none other than LEGO. Thanks to the voters for a nostalgia contest, The X-Files is getting a pretty epic build, and Anderson not only celebrated the news, but actually called it almost exactly a decade ago from this point in the 2025 TV schedule.

LEGO fan designer WetWired created the set that evidently will be known as The X-Files: The Truth Is Out There, which went on to win the grand prize in LEGO’s “Build Your Nostalgia – 90s Throwback!” competition. The build for the iconic sci-fi series was up against designs for Jumanji (came in second), Buffy the Vampire Slayer Library (third), Edward Scissorhands (fourth), and The Fifth Element Book Nook and Playset (fifth).

The winning design is on two levels: a bottom level recreation of the iconic X-Files office and a top layer complete with a UFO and grey alien. Figures include Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Assistant Director Walter Skinner, Jersey Devil, Eugene Tooms, and Syndicate Leader. The Syndicate Leader seems to be the Cigarette-Smoking Man by a different name and missing his Morley, but if an explosion that exposed his skull wasn’t enough to get rid of CSM, going by a different name in a LEGO set can’t stop him!

In all seriousness, the Easter eggs are pretty delightful. Eugene Tooms – a.k.a. the liver-eating contortionist murderer who debuted in a standout Season 1 episode – is lurking behind a hole in the wall. There’s a copy of The Lone Gunman newspaper, Mulder’s unforgettable “I Want To Believe” poster, and the dynamic duo’s flashlights. The Skinner figurine even looks grouchy, which is a good nod to whenever he had reason to visit Mulder’s office.

Coming in at more than 2000 pieces and honoring a show that dominated in the ‘90s, I would definitely say this is a set for adults. In fact, millennials across the country might have started saving up for the set as soon as it was announced. While Gillian Anderson has generally been noncommittal at best about ever reprising her role as Scully after how Season 11 ended, she celebrated the winning LEGO set on X (formerly known as Twitter). Complete with a UFO emoji, she wrote:

Spooky, right? On the whole, I get a kick out of the X-Files set winning the grand prize, and I desperately want to know the average age of voters. The set is cool enough that I can imagine people who aren’t experts in the ‘90s to vote for it, but I suspect that there were a fair number of folks in their 30s and 40s who cast their votes. Grand Prize Winner WetWired will see their build turned into a LEGO set and receive 1% of the total net sales, ten complimentary copies of their set, and credit and bio as the LEGO Fan Designer in the set materials, per the challenge info.

The X-Files was a pop culture behemoth throughout the '90s and into the early '00s, to the point that leads David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprised their iconic roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully not only for another feature film in 2008, but two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018. A reboot has been in the works for some time with Sinners' Ryan Coogler at the helm, and while it's not likely to be ready in the 2025 TV schedule, the world of Mulder and Scully may return to TV. Whether that also means Mulder and Scully themselves is harder to say, but Gillian Anderson has weighed in.

As a fan of The X-Files going back to when I was almost certainly too young to have been watching The X-Files, Dana Scully will always hold a special place in my heart. Perhaps that's why my feelings are so mixed after learning about her latest comments on the Ryan Coogler reboot. Appearing on This Morning to promote The Salt Path, Anderson responded to the reports that she'd spoken to Coogler about the project. She said:

Gillian Anderson was polite but firmly noncommittal in her response to The X-Files question, although she did compliment Coogler. On the whole, her comments hit a lot differently than when Chris Carter weighed in with his own two cents. The original creator said that he was "looking forward to seeing what somebody else does with it," which I was fully on board with after how Season 11 ended, especially for Scully.

And that Season 11 ending for Scully is what makes me reluctant to want to see Gillian Anderson reprising the role as long as those final revival plot twists remain canon. (Suffice it to say that none of my picks for the Top 20 episodes of The X-Files came from Season 1 1.) I couldn't be upset when Anderson didn't want to come back for Season 12, and I'm totally fine with a Ryan Coogler reboot that features new characters rather than retreads Mulder and Scully ground. (Doggett is fair game, though, with Robert Patrick's enthusiasm!)

Does that mean I'd dramatically boycott if Gillian Anderson ever did reprise her role as Scully, especially if opposite David Duchovny as Mulder? Of course not, but I'd also be just fine ignoring how Season 11 handled her character, and her career is flourishing in other directions.

Star Trek has been around for decades, and it takes a lot of people to fill a ship. As such, there's no shortage of actors who have joined its ranks over the years, but even in 2025, there are still some who haven't. With upcoming Trek shows on the horizon, I had to highlight some of the prominent names in sci-fi who I would love to see join Starfleet or some other role in this galaxy.

Whether it's joining a full-length series or just popping around for a one-off movie, these actors would be perfect for Star Trek. Frankly, some of them have done so much sci-fi in their careers that I'm shocked it hasn't happened already. All that being said, let's jump on my picks and go over where I'd best see them fitting into the franchise when it comes to roles.

Gillian Anderson

Had Bryan Fuller remained the showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery, this could've happened already. The creative revealed on the D-Con Chamber that Gillian Anderson was planned to play a Starfleet Captain, though her exact role in the series was not defined. It is ironic that the person paired with David Duchovny to play the paranormal skeptic in The X-Files could've been someone who regularly interacted with aliens in Star Trek.

I don't think there's any denying Anderson would be the perfect fit for a Starfleet Captain or some other high-ranking official in the organization. I would say she has "Janeway energy," so it's easier to see her in that captain role because someone has previously paved the way with a character I could've easily seen her playing as well. Will it ever happen? I want to believe.

Rosario Dawson

After playing Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars and nurse Claire Temple in Netflix's Marvel shows, it only seems fitting that Rosario Dawson jumps to Star Trek next. In fact, the actress said years ago she's a fan and would love to be a part of the franchise, initially proposing that she play a background character just to be included in the fun and complete a lifelong dream. Of course, she's a big deal in Hollywood, and I doubt the franchise would toss her in rather than offer her an actual role.

Dawson's father suggested she play a Q, and I'm 100% on board with that idea. I think linking her to Starfleet is just too obvious of an option, and we could use more Q characters in the franchise to inject additional chaos into the shows every so often.

Alan Tudyk

Alan Tudyk isn't just a sci-fi actor; I would say a vast majority of the work in his career has come from the genre. He was burned on the set of Rogue One and was on the cast of Firefly, one of the most iconic canceled sci- fi shows. Frankly, I'm shocked he's never done anything with Star Trek, and I think it's high time that change.

The best thing about Tudyk is that he's just as iconic as a voice actor as he is in live-action. That makes him a perfect fit for any species of the week that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds could use, corporeal or otherwise. For some reason, I see him playing a Medusan, but I can't explain why that sounds so perfect.

Elliot Page

Elliot Page hasn't been as active in Hollywood as in years past, but maybe it's because the right role hasn't come along. There's ample opportunity for the actor to make a comeback in the Star Trek franchise and an audience pre-dispositioned and ready to embrace the latest chapter in his life.

I also feel like Page just naturally has the look of someone suited to be a Vulcan or Romulan. Much like James Frain was the perfect fit for Sarek, I see Page taking on the role of a Vulcan leader or maybe a tough Romulan ready to take down the Federation with some brilliant scheme. In truth, I just want to see Page doing big things in Hollywood again, and I could think of no better fandom to welcome him into than the Star Trek universe.

John Boyega

There's a part of me that thinks John Boyega referring to his time in Star Wars as "franchise jail" means he won't readily do another sci-fi franchise again. Still, if there was a shortlist of actors in Hollywood, I would say are the best fit to bring back Star Trek movies, he'd be the star I'd want to prop up the franchise with.

As a franchise lead, he'd almost certainly have to be a Starfleet Captain. Sure, I'm all for the idea that anyone can be the lead of a Star Trek adventure, but he spent his time in Star Wars largely playing second banana to a larger story. It's high time we make John Boyega a leading man in sci-fi, and Trek would welcome him with open arms if he's willing to give it another try.

Domhnall Gleeson

I know I used the picture of him as Hux, but truthfully, I'd want more of the Domhnall Gleeson who appeared in Ex Machina for a Star Trek movie. Let's be honest, there's no shortage of Gleeson performances in movies that showcase his strengths as an actor, and they all make for a candidate that Starfleet would want among its highest ranks.

The problem is that Domhnall Gleeson is just so damn captivating as a villain. It would be a shame to have him in Star Trek and not play one of the most dastardly antagonists any of the quadrants have ever seen. I'm talking about something way worse than any of the most dangerous villains of The Next Generation, maybe even worse than Deep Space Nine's Dukat. He's capable of it, we just need someone over at Paramount to give him a shot and let him cook.

Katee Sackhoff

Katee Sackhoff has been a big name in the science fiction world for a while, really exploding onto the scene in Battlestar Galactica. Decades later, she's played Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian and talked about shifting over to Star Trek. Jonathan Frakes suggested she join Starfleet Academy, and I 100% sign off on that idea.

It may not be the best time to bring up Section 31 after critics were unkind in their reviews of the recent movie, but is there any person more suited for the morally gray faction? I could see Sackhoff steering the fandom back to being on board with Section 31, and if she can be paired up with Michelle Yeoh for a potential sequel to the movie, that's even better.

These are just a few names that I'd be thrilled to see involved with Star Trek as the franchise presses onward into the future. Those looking to keep tabs on everything on the way should pick up Paramount+ and catch up on some of the fantastic shows from the past few years.

The X-Files was a cultural juggernaut out of the '90s, to the point that many guests went on to become TV stars in their own right and fans celebrated the 30th anniversary of the series just one year ago. The David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson version of the show expanded into two feature films (one of which reached its 25th anniversary in 2023) and two revival seasons from 2016 - 2018 to follow the original nine. The next version of the franchise not only isn't set to include the original stars, but also leaves out original creator Chris Carter. According to Carter, though, it's a good thing.

News broke back in 2023 that Black Panther writer/director Ryan Coogler was attached to a developing The X-Files reboot, which Variety reported was planned to include a diverse cast. At the time, the project was in very early stages of development, and there haven't been many updates since until Chris Carter opened up back in April. The original creator/showrunner spoke with Inverse about his career and shared his thoughts on Coogler's version proceeding without his involvement:

Carter's comments about seeing somebody else helm The X-Files' next voyage seem pretty healthy, if you ask me. The show covered a lot with some increasingly convoluted mythology over eleven seasons (currently available streaming via Hulu subscription) and two movies under Carter; Ryan Coogler has more of a blank slate to start telling these stories.

Plus, as somebody who likes to pretend that Season 11 didn't end the way that it did for Mulder and Scully in what I then dubbed "The Most WTF Finale Ever," I think some fresh blood in the hands of somebody other than Chris Carter could be pretty interesting. I love the show enough that I hard a hard time narrowing down my picks for the 25 best episodes, but I don't need another season like the eleventh.

Carter does have some idea of what Ryan Coogler has in mind, as he went on to tell Inverse:

The initial news of Ryan Coogler helming a fresh take on the franchise with a new cast seemed like it meant the era of Mulder and Scully was over. In fact, Gillian Anderson had already floated the idea that Season 11 would be her last before the first episode of it even aired, and had the perfect response when called out about Season 12 not happening.

Considering the wringer that Scully went through in what was evidently the last of Chris Carter's seasons, I honestly can't blame Gillian Anderson for not wanting to return. Just days after Carter dropped his comments about supporting Ryan Coogler's reboot without being involved in it, Gillian Anderson said this on TODAY about playing Scully again:

Do I 100% support a new take on the franchise with Ryan Coogler rather than Chris Carter? Sure. Do I also think somebody needs to call David Duchovny ASAP if the reboot gets a series order and Gillian Anderson signs on to make an appearance? Absolutely! A new era doesn't mean some familiar faces can't reprise their iconic roles briefly.

As for the idea that there's no X-Files without Mulder and Scully, I thought the original series actually did a pretty solid job of setting Agents Doggett (Robert Patrick) and Reyes (Annabeth Gish) up as the next two stars after Anderson and Duchovny both left, although the show was cancelled instead of continuing without them in 2002.

Plus, it is a stretch to have Mulder and Scully both actively investigating the paranormal in the FBI after more than thirty years, so I'm fine with the torch being passed. For now, though, it's a waiting game to see what – if anything – is announced within the foreseeable future about whether Ryan Coogler is indeed moving forward on the next take on The X-Files.

For now, you can always revisit the original run of the series – with or without the disappointing eleventh season – streaming with Hulu or find some upcoming new viewing options on our 2024 TV schedule.

What's On Netflix This Week

Netflix is still the home for movies, as it has been since back in its DVD days. April 1 will bring lots of films to Netflix subscribers, including the original Matrix trilogy, M. Night Shyamalan’s Split and its sequel Glass, and more. But two Netflix original projects are worth noting this week.

Ripley - April 4

Patricia Highsmith’s Thomas Ripley has been adapted into TV and film before, but the new Netflix Original series Ripley, a series nearly a decade in the making, promises to be something unique. Andrew Scott takes on the role of the sociopathic conman in a black-and-white production that also co-stars Dakota Fanning.

Scoop - April 5

Britain’s Royal Family is an incredibly popular topic on both sides of the Atlantic. The story of Prince Andrew and his alleged relationship with Jeffrey Epstein is one that caused a massive scandal. Scoop is the story of how the BBC scored a major interview with the Prince that would become infamous in its own right. Gillian Anderson, Keeley Hawes and Billie Piper star as women who made it happen.

What's On Disney+ This Week

Disney+ subscribers looking forward to new episodes of Star Wars: The Bad Batch and X-Men ‘97 certainly won’t be disappointed, but this week, it’s another piece of Disney animation that may steal the show.

Wish - April 3

Wish was Disney Animation’s 62nd feature film in 100 years. The newest film was a celebration of all things Disney, but it struggled at the box office. It will be interesting to see if, like Encanto before, Wish finds a second life on Disney+ once more people get a chance to see it.

Bluey, "Ghostbasket" - April 7

Australia’s Bluey has been one of the most popular shows not just on Disney+ but in all of streaming, ever since it debuted. This week, Disney+ embraces that popularity by making sure viewers don’t need to wait to see the newest episode. “Ghostbasket” will arrive on DIsney+ at the same time it premieres elsewhere in the world.

What's On Paramount+ This Week

If you’re a Star Trek fan, then it’s a pretty safe bet that you’re also a Paramount+ subscriber. The sci-fi franchise is a huge part of the service’s original content offerings, which makes this week a big deal.

Star Trek: Discovery (The Final Season) - April 4

Star Trek: Discovery was the first original Star Trek series to premiere on Paramount+ (then called CBS All Access), and now, with the debut of its fifth season, the show will come to an end. Discovery started life as a prequel to The Original Series, but quite a lot has happened since then. Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnam has finally become the Captain of the U.S.S. Discovery, and we can be sure she will be tested in her new role immediately.

What's On Peacock This Week

Peacock is the domestic home for all things WWE. The service will see a documentary on the life of the late Windham Rotunda, known to WWE fans as Bray Wyatt, on April 1, but the following weekend will come the biggest event of the WWE, and likely one of its biggest events ever.

Wrestlemania 40 - April 6 & 7

40 years after Madison Square Garden hosted the first event, Wrestlemania 40 comes to Philadelphia, PA. As has been the case the last few years, the event will cover two nights and promises to pack them both full of action. We know we’ll see the return of The Rock on night one, while night two will see the long-awaited rematch between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes for the WWE Universal Title.

What's On Prime Video This Week

March saw Prime Video subscribers get a major movie release with the Road House remake. Anybody who isn’t into movies where bones are broken might be happier this month, as two new original films debut that are quite different.

Musica - April 4

Musica isn’t a musical, but the new movie by writer, director and star Rudy Mancuso looks to be just as creative as one. Mancuso stars as a man suffering from synesthesia, i.e. hears the rhythm of the world around him, as he struggles with his own life, trying to find direction and love.

How to Date Billy Walsh - April 5

Last month saw the release of the romantic drama The Idea of You with Anne Hathaway, which has seen surprisingly strong critical reviews. Now the platform goes full rom-com with How to Date Billy Walsh. The story follows teen Archie who has never told childhood friend Amelia how he feels about her. As a result, he's now found himself attempting to aid her in her chase of school heartthrob Billy.

What's On Apple TV+ This Week

April is a strong month for content on Apple TV+. This week will see the debut of a second season of Mya Rudolf’s comedy series Loot, but it’s another, much darker, show that has us curious.

While many are anxiously awaiting Colin Farrell’s return as Penguin on Max later this year, it won’t be his first major streaming series of 2024. In Sugar, Farrell plays a private detective who specializes in finding missing people. The limited series looks to be something of a modern noir detective story, and Ferrell looks perfect for just that sort of role.

While these are some of the highlights of this week’s streaming platforms, it’s only a fraction of what’s now available to watch Be sure to check out everything new on Netflix for a complete list of what’s now streaming there. As a huge fan of Disney’s Tron movies, I’m pretty excited by the fact that the long-awaited three-quel to one of the best sci-fi movies has finally started filming. More commonly called by its unconfirmed title, Tron: Ares’ cast has been adding exciting players over the last year, with Evan Peters and Jared Leto among them. However, my excitement has just taken a huge leap forward, as X-Files vet Gillian Anderson has now been announced as officially on The Grid. 

Deadline recently broke the news that Anderson will be starring in director Joachim Rønning’s sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy, but as you’d expect, no further details on the Sex Education star’s character have been given. So speculation is obviously going to run rampant as to which side of the digital divide Gillian will be occupying, and just whose side she's on. 

That last part is really important, as Tron 3's story supposedly centers around Jared Leto’s program, Ares, crossing over from the digital world into our flesh and blood reality. Apparently, the human race is not ready for this, and it could lead to a conflict that's long been brewing on the Tron timeline.

It’s an assumption that further draws into question the potential for Tron: Ares to be a true follow-up to director Joseph Kosinski’s predecessor. Initially it looked like reports had this movie pegged as a “Jared Leto Tron reboot,” but further reports have thrown some doubt on that. Neither case is confirmed, much like the potential storyline. 

So who could Gillian Anderson possibly be playing in Tron: Ares? Well, this is without any firm basis in fact, but I’d like to think that she’s been cast as a Program from the world of The Grid. I’m not saying that we couldn’t see Ms. Anderson popping up as another member of the Dillinger family in the human world, a prospect that’s equally exciting.

At the same time, I’d like to think that the woman who’s acted through many close encounters of weirdness in sci-fi TV wouldn’t just sign on for any part in a major Disney movie. Especially one as sci-fi heavy as the Tron franchise. Though there is a possibility that after starring in the bonkers X-Files story “First Person Shooter,” Gillian Anderson may indeed have wanted to sit out the prospective digital ware ahead. 

And before you ask, “was that the video game episode?”, yes, it totally was. To refresh your memory, as well as introduce those who may not know about this moment in cyber history, take a look at this episode promo from way back when:

The ‘90s truly were a wild time, and while that story may not have made our rundown of the best X-Files episodes, moments like this make it worth referencing from time to time. Though admittedly, a lot has changed since Gillian Anderson had to go into a video game to save co-star David Duchovny; so who really knows? 

As we patiently observe the production of Tron: Ares, Tron 3, or whatever we’re supposed to call this movie, it’s a time of celebration. The movie that we kept hoping for may finally be on its way, depending on how you feel about the ditching of Tron: Ascension’s reported plot.

No matter which side you land on though, having an acting powerhouse like Gillian Anderson involved is, without question, a plus. And it’s one I’ll happily carry with me as I wait for the next updates for this ever secretive world. Especially when the thought had occurred to me that if Disney really wanted to get creative, Anderson could be a new big bad similar to David Warner's Ed Dillinger, who gets to work both sides of the fence in the potential future of Tron's legacy.

While Tron: Ares’ story, and Gillian Anderson’s role within that structure are still top secret, there’s still a lot of history fans can brush up on. The entire Tron story so far can be experienced through various tie-in comics and games, as well as both films and the TV series Tron: Uprising. Those last couple options are easily accessible, as all you need is a Disney+ subscription to enter The Grid that Flynn built.

The X-Files started small on Fox in 1993 before ultimately running for nine seasons, two feature films, and another two revival seasons years later. While it seems likely that the journey of Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) is over as of spring 2018's WTF finale, there are 218 episodes going back more than thirty years about everything from monsters to serial killers to aliens.

After looking at which ones have stood the test of time, which were important to the overall story, and which are infinitely rewatchable, let's dive into the 20 best episodes (all available streaming via Hulu subscription)!

20. Squeeze: Season 1, Episode 3

"Squeeze" delivered a memorable villain with Eugene Victor Tooms, a contortionist serial killer with the mutation requiring him to eat human livers before hibernating every three decades. This was the very first Monster of the Week episode, after the pilot kicked off the series and the second episode started the serialized mytharc. It was also the first (of many) with somebody breaking into Scully's apartment. Fun fact: if Mulder and Scully hadn't stopped his liver-eating cycle, Tooms would have been killing again in 2023. 

19. Wetwired: Season 3, Episode 23

"Wetwired" combined a standalone case with the larger mytharc, with Scully succumbing to paranoid psychosis after binge-watching VHS tapes with a hidden signal. Although it's very '90s, it showed off what both agents brought to the X-files despite different approaches. Plus, this is one of many episodes with Mulder and/or Scully pulling a gun on the other, and a nice showcase of Mulder going all-out to save her. Throw in the Lone Gunmen, and what's not to love? 

18. Je Souhaite: Season 7, Episode 21

While "Squeeze" was the first standalone episode, "Je Souhaite" was the last standalone of the original Mulder/Scully era. The agents found a genie who granted Mulder three wishes. He of course believed right away, and Scully got to have fun examining the body of an invisible man. Sure, Mulder made a predictable choice with his third wish, but it was a fun final standalone entry in the classic era. 

17. Requiem: Season 7, Episode 22

The final mytharc episode of the original Mulder/Scully era, "Requiem" revisited the location and characters from the pilot in the hunt for a UFO. By the end, Mulder was abducted by aliens, Skinner was a believer, Scully was pregnant, and Krycek pushed the Cigarette-Smoking Man down a flight of stairs to kill him. (Spoiler alert: CSM was not dead.) While it was a pivotal episode, it's hard not to judge "Requiem" without considering how Season 8 and beyond continued the story.

16. How The Ghosts Stole Christmas: Season 6, Episode 6

If you want to see Mulder and Scully psychoanalyzed by spirits, then How the Ghosts Stole Christmas is for you. Ed Asner and Lily Tomlin guest-starred as ghosts trying to lure the agents into a murder/suicide lovers pact while trapped in a spooky mansion. Another episode with Mulder and Scully pointing their guns at each other, this takes a very X-Files look at their relationship. Is it an episode that changes the course of the mytharc or puts a monster behind bars? No, but it's a fun one.

15. Leonard Betts: Season 4, Episode 12

"Leonard Betts" was a turning point in the series. Airing after Super Bowl XXXI in 1997, Mulder and Scully investigated the case of a mutated killer (played by ER's Paul McCrane) who subsisted on cancerous tumors and could regenerate body parts, including his head. The kicker came during a showdown between Betts and Scully when he dropped this iconic line: "I'm sorry, but you've got something I need." Yes, Scully had cancer, and the course of Season 4 immediately changed. 

14. Jose Chung's From Outer Space: Season 3, Episode 20

Penned by fan-favorite writer Darin Morgan, "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" told story of a supposed alien abduction through the POVs of multiple characters to author Jose Chung, played by Charles Nelson Reilly. Mulder was described in one POV as a "mandroid" and Scully as "disguised as a woman" but "not pulling it off." Throw in Scully replacing a character's F-bombs with "bleep" when she told her version, and Men in Black being played by Alec Trebek and Jesse Ventura, and this is a classic.

13. Small Potatoes: Season 4, Episode 20

Speaking of Darin Morgan, the writer guest-starred in "Small Potatoes" as self-described "loser" Eddie Van Blundht – the "h" is silent – with the ability to change his appearance. He used this ability to trick women into sleeping with him, believing he was their husband, resulting in babies born with the characteristic tails of the Van Blundht family. While David Duchovny playing Eddie impersonating Mulder was definitely funny, the episode glossed over the sexual assault of Eddie's crimes a bit too much; otherwise, it would rank higher.

12. Paper Hearts: Season 4, Episode 10

"Paper Hearts" features a truly evil villain who also happened to be entirely human, and the only supernatural element was the strange dream connection between serial killer John Lee Roche and Mulder. The episode forced Mulder to consider that his sister's abduction may have had nothing to do with aliens, and – as usual when Samantha was involved – he got way too invested, allowing Roche to escape and nearly kill again. While the episode doesn't entirely age well, it's a great showcase for David Duchovny.

11. The Post-Modern Prometheus: Season 5, Episode 5

The X-Files went black and white for "The Post-Modern Prometheus," a.k.a. the show's twisted take on Frankenstein involving mysterious pregnancies, a literal mob of townspeople, a monster who wasn't so monstrous, and Cher. The story glossed over sexual assaults, but the comic book format blurs the lines of what actually happened in the case. It's a visually beautiful episode that earned seven Emmy nominations, winning one. Plus, the man underneath the Great Mutato makeup was Chris Owens, who also played the young Cigarette-Smoking Man and Jeffrey Spender.

10. Duane Barry/Ascension: Season 2, Episodes 5/6

It's hard to consider "Duane Barry" and "Ascension" separately, and not because of the red Speedo. Mulder's hostage situation with purported abductee Duane Barry turned into Barry breaking into Scully's apartment and kidnapping her. Despite Mulder's desperate attempt to save her – including some aerial lift stunts performed by David Duchovny – she was abducted in Barry's place on a mountaintop. This two-parter was also the end of Krycek's time with the FBI. While the story was due to Gillian Anderson's real-life pregnancy, few TXF twists have as long-lasting effects as Scully's abduction. 

9. Home: Season 4, Episode 2

"Home" made history as the first network TV episode to receive a TV-MA rating, and Fox never aired a rerun after the initial broadcast in 1996. The Monsters of the Week were the severely inbred Peacock family, and Mulder and Scully were brought in after a baby – born of multi-generation incest – was buried alive. The episode played a cover of the Johnny Mathis song "Wonderful! Wonderful!" over a kindly sheriff and his wife being murdered. Most of the good guys died and two Peacocks escaped, making it a very dark but unforgettable hour of television.

8. Triangle: Season 6, Episode 3

"Triangle" changed the TXF format with long one-take shots cut between two main stories. First, Scully and the Lone Gunmen searched for Mulder on a ghost ship in 1998. Then, Mulder was with a snazzy-looking Scully on a time-warped version of the ship as they evaded a Nazi version of the Cigarette-Smoking Man in 1939... or, more likely, Mulder was just concussed and/or drugged in 1998. The Wizard of Oz-esque episode is visually stunning, super fun, and doesn't really need to make sense. Plus, it even (sort of) delivered the first Mulder/Scully kiss.

7. Memento Mori: Season 4, Episode 14

Scully's cancer arc truly began in "Memento Mori" when she broke the news to Mulder and they began an investigation. The partners had parallel stories, with Scully pursuing answers within herself, while unbeknownst to her, Mulder was going all-out to try and save her, including asking Skinner to set up a meeting with CSM. Skinner refused, but then made a deal with the devil himself. It's technically a mytharc episode, but more of a showcase for Scully that won Gillian Anderson a well-deserved Emmy. 

6. Ice: Season 1, Episode 8

"Ice" was set almost entirely in an isolated outpost in Alaska only reachable by helicopter, and didn't need elaborate effects for a truly scary Monster of the Week. The plot was reminiscent of The Thing as Mulder, Scully, and a small team were exposed to a deadly parasite. When bodies started dropping due to murder, everybody was a suspect. Not only did Xander Berkeley, Felicity Huffman, and Jeff Kober guest star, but "Ice" was the first (and certainly not last) episode with Mulder and Scully pointing guns at each other.

5. Redux II: Season 5, Episode 2

The X-Files had a big landing to stick with the final episode of a tangled three-parter, as Scully was dying, Mulder was facing murder charges, and the Cigarette-Smoking Man was active in the shadows. Somehow, "Redux II" pulled it off. Mulder saved himself by exposing an FBI mole. Scully's cancer went into remission. Samantha appeared (sort of). Skinner proved his loyalty (again). CSM was shot, and lost so much blood that he was surely dead. (Spoiler alert: he wasn't dead.) Where "Redux" fell short, "Redux II" succeeded.

4. The Blessing Way/Paper Clip: Season 3, Episodes 1/2

"The Blessing Way" and "Paper Clip" paid off on the previous season's cliffhangers and went even further. Scully learned she had an implant in her neck and made the fateful decision to remove it. Her sister Melissa was mistakenly murdered by Krycek and an assassin, and Krycek was cut loose by the Cigarette-Smoking Man. The plot thickened for Mulder with the Syndicate, his mom, and Samantha. Instead of pointing their guns at each other, Mulder and Scully both drew on Skinner. This two-parter permanently shifted the course of the mytharc.

3. Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose: Season 3, Episode 4

"Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" is a classic comedic episode of The X-Files, complete with Peter Boyle in an Emmy-winning turn as the titular Clyde Bruckman. The unfortunate Bruckman could predict how people could die, which put him on the radar of a killer. Although the hour ended with Bruckman's demise, highlights of his time with Mulder and Scully included implying Mulder would die due to autoerotic asphyxiation and telling Scully that she wouldn't die at all. 

2. Pusher: Season 3, Episode 17

Any list of top X-Files episodes would be incomplete without "Pusher" and Robert Patrick Modell as the villain who could impose his will on others with just his voice. He forced a man to set himself on fire, an agent to have a heart attack, and – in Mulder's case – play Russian roulette with Scully. A strong episode for both leads, "Pusher" is a rare entry to get a sequel years later, and the Russian roulette sequence is one of the most iconic scenes of TXF.

1. Bad Blood: Season 5, Episode 12

Is it blasphemous to rank a comedic episode at #1 for a show that specialized in sci-fi, supernatural, and horror? Perhaps, but "Bad Blood" is a fan favorite for a reason. Guest starring Luke Wilson and The Sandlot vet and TikTok star Patrick Renna, "Bad Blood" involved Scully and Mulder telling their versions of the same story, showing their very different perspectives on investigations... and each other. Did Scully really rant about cream cheese? Did Mulder really sing the "Shaft" theme song? We may never know, but David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson delivered major laughs with "Bad Blood."

Now, this ranking isn't to say that there were no excellent episodes from Seasons 8-11, but the classics (as well as the Fight the Future feature film) are from the original Mulder/Scully era, and always worth a rewatch. 

The streaming wars are currently in full effect, and there are a number of different services to choose from. Each has some big TV shows, and those with a Netflix subscription were recently treated to Season 4 of Sex Education. I’m happy the coming of age comedy is back, but it feels like Season 4 kind of missed the plot. Here’s what I mean.

Sex Education’s title offers what the original premise of the show was. Various teenagers struggle with their bodies and sexuality, with all sorts of hilariously uncomfortable events occurring. Protagonists Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve (Emma Mackey) eventually start dolling out sex and relationship advice to their peers, forming a personal connection in the process. But everything got turned on its head for the show’s fourth season on Netflix.

The new episodes of Sex Education are no longer set at Moordale Secondary School following the events of Season 3’s finale. A number of characters were written out entirely, while the largest ones were split up; most went to the new term at Cavendish Sixth Form College, Maeve traveled to America for Wallace University, and Adam (Connor Swindells) forgoes school and finds an apprenticeship. 

While it’s understandable that Sex Education eventually switched things up, it feels like the titular act itself has become less important. Otis is fighting to start his own clinic at Cavendish because there’s already a popular one by a student named O. Even Gillian Anderson’s Jean Millburn is initially not dispensing advice thanks to the stressors and exhaustion of being a single parent to her newborn Joy. Where are all the sexual hi-jinx?

Then there’s the way that Maeve and Adam’s stories were handled. Because neither of them are enrolled at Cavendish, they are kept apart from the main cast for a number of episodes. This means that we have to not-so-patiently wait for them to interact with regular scene partners like Ncuti Gatwa’s Eric and Aimee Lou Wood’s Aimee. And that’s yet another reason why Season 4 of Sex Education simply feels like it’s missing some of the magic. At least, in my opinion.

Plenty of shows ebb and flow, making bold choices that don’t always pay off for the fans. Unfortunately for anyone dissatisfied with the new batch of episodes, there’s not going to be any comeback. Namely because Sex Education officially ended with Season 4. Although fans were pleased when Maeve and Jean finally got to meet for the first time.

It’s time to say goodbye to Moordale, Otis’ sex therapy sessions and the entertaining ensemble of the Netflix dramedy Sex Education. While it’s a bummer that Season 4 of Sex Education will be its last, there’s no question that the memorable stories and valuable lessons about life, love and sex will live on. So, before Asa Butterfield's Otis gives his final session, let’s go over everything you need to remember about this fantastic series before its fourth and final season debuts on September 21. 

 Maeve And Otis Kissed 

After seasons and seasons of keeping fans waiting, Maeve (Emma Mackey) and Otis finally kissed and admitted their feelings for each other mid-way through the third installment. The last part of Season 3 focused on the two trying to figure out how to move forward, and how their relationship would impact both Maeve's love interest Issac and Otis’ girlfriend through part of Season 3, Ruby.

Arguably, this was one of the most anticipated moments in Sex Education, and with Maeve going to America, I’m curious to see if their relationship can last long-distance, or if these two are modern-day star-crossed lovers.  

Maeve Left Moordale To Go To School In America 

Even though Maeve was close to staying in Mooredale, given how good things were between her and Otis, Amiee gave her a stern talking-to and said she must go. 

When she went to tell Otis her decision, he asked about their future together, and she simply told him that they’ll see where they’re at whenever she returns. So, nothing is set in stone when it comes to their relationship, but they did leave things on fairly good terms. As Maeve said, it wasn't a goodbye, but a “see you soon.”

Now, she’s off to America, where she’ll meet new people and new professors, with Schitt's Creek vet Dan Levy starring as one of them. She'll also be working really hard to become a writer.  

Jean Went Into Labor Very Early, And She’s Planning To Raise Her Child With Jakob 

Joy, the little baby who was born at the end of the season, came into a world full of drama, especially when it comes to the mystery of who her father is. Jean (Gillian Anderson) was pregnant with her the whole season, and she told Ola’s dad Jakob (Mikael Persbrandt) that the baby was his. He was a bit skeptical about that, because the two were on again off again, and he asked for a paternity test. 

Then, Jean went into labor way too early, which gave her a serious health scare. After she had the baby, and was in recovery mode, Jakob showed his support, and it seems like they’ll move on happily together. However, toward the end of the finale, Anderson’s character opened an envelope and had a less-than-ideal reaction, implying that Joy’s biological father might not be Ola’s dad, leaving the door wide open for even more drama come Season 4. 

Jackson And Cal Broke Up 

Even though Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling) and Cal (Dua Saleh) truly care about each other, they ended up calling things off. After flirting all season, and trying to be together, Jackson struggled with his identity, and the non-binary Cal worried about him not seeing them as such. Both characters are on major journeys of self-discovery; however, to really figure themselves out, they decided it would be best not to be together. 

Adam And Eric Broke Up 

Sadly one of our favorite YA LGBTQ+ couples broke up in Season 3. However, it was arguably for the best. After Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) took his life-changing trip to Lagos, and kissed another boy, he confessed that moment to Adam (Connor Swindells). While he felt bad for hurting his partner, he also realized it was a sign that the two of them aren’t so compatible, and were at very different stages of their lives. This led to Gatwa’s character saying:

Adam then asked if a break-up was necessary, and sadly Eric’s answer was yes. While it was a tragic moment, both boys could go on to have happy endings by the end of the episode, showing that they’re both headed in positive directions, different as those directions may be.

Moordale Academy Closed 

After a season-long battle between headmaster Hope (Jemima Kirke) and the students, the kids sabotaged her open day by showing an explicit film where many of them dressed as genitals and sang the NSFW classic “Fuck the Pain Away.” This came after the headmaster tried to enforce gender norms and made Adam and Lily where shame signs. Even though that went well, and Hope’s mean and un-inclusive plans were put to a stop, the school lost its funding. So, going into Season 4, the kids will be forced to find new schools or paths.   

Isaac Told Maeve He Needs Time Before They Can Be Friends 

Maeve was sending Isaac (George Robinson) mixed signals, especially after she kissed Otis in Season 3, and so he understandably “takes [his] heart off the table,” and he decided to move on. In the finale, she approached Isaac and apologizeds to him, which he accepted, but while also noting that it will take him a while to truly accept it. Overall, things aren’t terrible between the two, but they’re for sure awkward going into the new episodes.

Mr. Groff Is On A Journey Of Self Improvement  

After losing his job as headmaster, Adam’s dad Michael Groff (Alistair Petrie) went on a journey of self-betterment. Having criticized and rudely accosted his son for years, he decided to look inward and really try to figure out how to be a better dad, and a better man in general. That started with him taking up cooking as a hobby, while also trying to to mend his relationships with his son and ex-wife in the meantime.

A Few More Quick Things To Remember

• Otis and Ruby dated for a short period of time but broke up.
• Aimee is in the process of healing after being sexually assaulted two seasons ago. 
• Aimee and Steve broke up, and left things on good terms.
• Viv started seeing a boy. 
• Maeve spends quite a bit of time with her mom and half sister Elsie in Season 3.

Network TV was the place to be on the small screen back in the mid-to-late ‘90s, before streaming services started churning out series en masse. This was the era of The X-Files in its prime, with David Duchovny’s Agent Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson’s Agent Dana Scully as pop culture icons. They came to the big screen in the summer of 1998 with The X-Files: Fight the Future, which combined the best parts of the show’s mythology for longtime fans with blockbuster scale for newcomers. I rewatched it for the 25th anniversary, and realized some things that didn’t quite hit home in 1998. 

Now, I’m not going to claim that June 2023 was the first time that I rewatched Fight the Future since seeing it in the theater as a preteen, and there’s a well-worn VHS copy of the movie somewhere to prove it. A lot has happened since the theatrical premiere on June 19, 1998 – including a second movie and a semi-successful Fox revival – but there’s still a lot to enjoy from this film. 

1. The Movie Is One-Of-A-Kind

While theatrical films based on TV shows were released before Fight the Future and have been released since, the first X-Files movie was part of an ongoing network TV show rather than a sequel to a series that had already ended, a la the Star Trek, Downton Abbey, and Veronica Mars franchises. In fact, fans will remember that the film picked up where Season 5 left off in May of ‘98 and set up the premiere of Season 6 in November of ‘98. I didn’t fully appreciate that network TV achievement as a kid, but I’m certainly impressed now. 

2. The Theme Song Hits Different In A Movie

Any fan of The X-Files going back to the ‘90s or who binge-watched via streaming more recently could probably whistle the theme tune from memory, and I maintain that the song from Mark Snow makes the TV show’s opening credits positively iconic. Fight the Future has a slightly elevated version of the song, and there’s something about hearing it (and the reprise in the soundtrack) on the scale of a film that just hits differently, even though I was just watching on my TV screen in 2023 as opposed to during a theatrical experience a la 1998. 

3. I Still Hate That Damn Bee, 25 Years Later

Bees are a big deal in Fight the Future, to say the least. Duchovny and Anderson filmed with what she described to EW back in '98 as "buckets of bees" for the scene of Mulder and Scully being swarmed on top of the mysterious facility, but… well, any diehard fan of The X-Files undoubtedly knows the exact insect that I’m talking about when I say “That Damn Bee.” 

Let me set the scene: Scully has decided to quit the FBI, Mulder is dropping heartfelt confessions that he’d probably never make if not on the verge of losing her, and an emotional hug is literal millimeters from turning into a kiss… until That Damn Bee stings her, she has a reaction to the alien virus it transmitted to her, and the plot takes off again. 

As an adult, I understand why they couldn’t kiss in the movie, and even the preteen version of me probably shouldn’t have fallen for the fake out, but That Damn Bee is still the real villain of The X-Files: Fight the Future, if you ask me. The Cigarette-Smoking Man isn’t half as good at ruining Mulder/Scully moments, and I guess there are some grudges that take more than 25 years to get over! 

4. I Can Pretty Much Quote The Whole Movie

I have no idea how many times I’ve actually seen this movie or how much of this was just a result of imprinting on the movie at a young age, but I discovered in my latest rewatch that I could pretty much speak all the lines along with the characters, ranging from Dana “THERE’S NO TIME!” Scully to Fox “I can say ‘shit’ now that I’m not on network TV!” Mulder to the Cigarette-Smoking Man and his very genre un-savvy “He’ll never make it!” about Mulder. 

Now, if you want to tell yourself that I can’t quote the entire hallway scene before That Damn Bee from memory with a clear conscience, you can, but you’re wrong. What can I say? Maybe The X-Files: Fight the Future is simply that with which I can’t live without… and if you read the bizarre second half of that sentence in Armin Mueller-Stahl’s accent as Strughold, then you too may have seen this movie too many times! 

5. I Don’t Really Care About The Plot Holes

Was this the greatest film in the history of film? Of course not, although I’d certainly rank it above 2008's The X-Files: I Want to Believe, the second film in the franchise. Still, as I rewatched the movie for the 25th anniversary to write this, I took note of some plot holes that I’ve been able to overlook before. I also realized that I don’t really care about them and can still love the movie. 

Who called in the bomb threat to Dallas, and why was there no subtler way to dispose of the infected corpses? No idea. Was Scully somehow the only person who was stung by one of the carrier bees? That seems unlikely, but okay! How did Mulder and Scully get back from Antarctica? Even the show goes on to make fun of that question! Did Byers wear a magical stretching suit that Mulder was somehow able to fit into his clothes without splitting every seam? Apparently!

And, I’m fine with it, even 25 years later. If I could suspend the hell out of my disbelief for the two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018 while also telling myself that the brutal reveal about what the Cigarette-Smoking Man did to Scully isn't canon, then nothing can ruin my enjoyment of Fight the Future. 

6. The Show Is Worth A Rewatch

For reasons ranging from seeing Mulder and Scully together in action again to hearing that movie version of the theme song, the final credits rolled on my rewatch with my realization that the whole show, rather than just a particular episode here and there, is really worth a rewatch as well, especially in its glory days. Does that mean that I’d want to revisit every episode, and that every mid-'90s episode has aged well? Definitely not, and I’m probably not the only fan who would much rather rewatch one of the vampire episodes than any other. 

But, The X-Files was a great show that I believe holds up for the most part… and luckily, all eleven seasons are available streaming with a Hulu subscription, with the show earning a spot on our list of best horror TV series to watch on Hulu. 

Since making his debut with 2009’s Crazy Horse, which earned Jeff Bridges a Best Actor Oscar, Scott Cooper has managed to put together some of the best casts for his various directorial efforts like Out of the Furnace, Black Mass, Hostiles, and Antlers. Well, with the debut of the 2023 Netflix release of The Pale Blue Eye, that tradition looks to continue a little while longer.

The new mystery thriller, which centers on Christian Bale’s detective, August Landor, as he attempts to solve a murder at 1830s West Point, features multiple mainstays of the Harry Potter movies, superb character actors, and the star of one of the biggest TV shows of the 1990s. Here is where you’ve seen The Pale Blue Eye cast before.

Christian Bale (Augustus Landor)

Leading off the cast of The Pale Blue Eye is Christian Bale, who takes on the role of the film’s protagonist, Augustus Landor, a detective tasked with solving the murder of a West Point cadet, per Netflix's Tudum website.

This is Bale’s third movie directed by Scott Cooper, as the actor-director duo previously paired up for Out of the Furnace and Hostiles. Bale was most recently seen in Thor: Love and Thunder, in which he portrayed central antagonist, Gorr the God Butcher. However, Bale is best known for a different comic character thanks to his portrayal of Bruce Wayne and Batman in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, another director whom he has worked with a considerable amount throughout his career.

Harry Melling (Edgar Allan Poe)

Harry Melling shows up in The Pale Blue Eye as a young Edgar Allan Poe, who helps Augustus Landor in his investigation after the renowned detective is summoned to the military academy.

Melling, who first came to fame with his portrayal of Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (he would go on to appear in four more Wizarding World movies), has become something of a hot commodity the past few years with a series of memorable film and TV appearances. This includes shows like The Queen’s Gambit and His Dark Materials, as well as a string of movies that includes The Old Guard, The Devil All the Time, and The Tragedy of Macbeth. 

Toby Jones (Dr. Daniel Marquis) 

Stepping in as West Point doctor Daniel Marquis in The Pale Blue Eye is veteran actor Toby Jones, who brings the mysterious figure to life.

Over the course of his career, Jones has appeared in multiple billion-dollar franchises including the Marvel Cinematic Universe (he played Arnim Zola in the first two Captain America movies), the Hunger Games movies, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and various Harry Potter titles, in which he voiced Dobby the house elf. But he’s also appeared in multiple decorated dramas like the Truman Capote movie Infamous, Frost/Nixon, My Week with Marilyn, and much more. He’s next set to appear in the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. 

Gillian Anderson (Mrs. Marquis) 

Taking on the role of Julia Marquis, the matriarch of the Marquis family and wife of Daniel, is Gillian Anderson.

Prior to joining the Pale Blue Eye cast, Anderson earned a Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy (her second of each) for her depiction of former United Kingdom Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on The Crown Season 4. Best known for her portrayal of Dana Scully on The X-Files throughout the ‘90s, Anderson has gone on to appear on shows like The Fall, Hannibal, and Sex Education. 

Lucy Boynton (Lea Marquis) 

Lucy Boynton appears in The Pale Blue Eye as Lea Marquis, the daughter of Daniel and Julia who always seems to catch the eye of Cadet Poe.

Ever since making her feature film debut as a young Beatrix Potter in Miss Potter, Boynton has gone on to appear in movies like Sing Street, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Murder on the Orient Express, and Bohemian Rhapsody. During that same stretch of time, Boynton has popped up on TV shows like The Politician, Modern Love, and multiple others. 

Harry Lawtey (Artemus Marquis)

Next up is Harry Lawtey, who shows up in The Pale Blue Eye as Artemus Marquis, a cadet at West Point.

Over the course of the past decade, Lawtey has mostly found work on the small screen, with major roles on shows like Industry, The Letter for the King, and Marcella, though he has appeared in two movies: City of Tiny Lights and Benediction. Lawtey will likely become a bigger player in the coming years thanks to his casting in Joker: Folie à Deux alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. 

Timothy Spall (Colonel Thayer)

Taking on the role of West Point authority figure Colonel Thayer in The Pale Blue Eye is Timothy Spall, yet another Harry Potter alum to appear in the new Netflix movie.

Outside of playing the villainous Peter Pettigrew in all but the first two Harry Potter movies, Spall is probably best known for his six collaborations with director Mike Leigh, with the most recent being 2014’s Mr. Turner. Spall has also earned praise for roles in movies such as The King’s Speech, The Damned United, Enchanted, The Last Samurai, and dozens upon dozens of other productions.

Robert Duvall (Pepe)

Taking on the role of occult expert Pepe in The Pale Blue Eye is Academy Award-winning actor and Hollywood legend Robert Duvall.

If you pull up a list of the best movies of all time, you’ll also find memorable performances by Duvall, including titles like The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Network, and To Kill a Mockingbird. But that is just a fraction of a fraction of Duvall’s work from throughout his career, as he has also given commanding performances on TV events like Lonesome Dove, The Man Who Captured Eichmann, and Broken Trail, to name just a few. Duvall previously worked with director Scott Cooper on Crazy Horse. 

Simon McBurney (Captain Hitchcock) 

Simon McBurney shows up in The Pale Blue Eye as Captain Hitchcock, an official at West Point.

Yet another member of the Pale Blue Eye cast to have also appeared in a Harry Potter movie (he voiced Kreacher the house elf in the penultimate chapter), McBurney has also appeared in movies like Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, The Manchurian Candidate, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and The Theory of Everything. His more recent TV credits include The Casual Vacancy, Carnival Row, and The Loudest Voice. 

Charlotte Gainsbourg (Patsy) 

And then there is Charlotte Gainsbourg, who appears in The Pale Blue Eye as Patsy, a local barmaid in the nearby village.

Over the course of her career, the actress and singer has appeared in movies like I’m Not There, The Science of Sleep, Happily Ever After, and a handful of films directed by Lars von Trier, including Antichrist, Melancholia, and Nymphomaniac, to name only a few. 

The Pale Blue Eye is currently available to stream for anyone with a Netflix subscription. If you want even more to watch after completing Scott Cooper’s new thriller, there are plenty of great movies on Netflix worth checking out.

Why We’re Excited: Lil Rel Howery is rarely involved with anything that isn’t fun and silly in the best ways, and we’re hoping his long-delayed directorial debut isn’t an exception. Plus, anytime a horror movie can boast a majority-Black cast, it’s a celebration.

Why We’re Excited: The simplistic logline of “M3GAN, but sexy?” is probably enough. The fact that Universal bypassed theaters to bring this thriller straight to streaming could be seen as worrisome, but I’d rather watch this at home anyway.

The Last House - August 7, 2026

Why We’re Excited: It sounds like a solid twist on outdoorsy survival stories, where the comforts of one’s own home can become a nightmare. Plus, put Greta Lee and Wagner Moura leading any project, and it’s gonna be a banger.

Why We’re Excited: I Saw The TV Glow proved Jane Schoenbrun is one of the most original and inventive horror filmmakers working right now, so of course we’re interested in their latest.

Insidious: Out Of The Further - August 21, 2026

Why We’re Excited: Following 2018’s lackluster sequel subtitled The Last Key, franchise star Patrick Wilson got behind the camera for 2023’s somewhat better The Red Door. Despite the franchise’s dwindling creative results, Insidious taking a new direction here could be interesting.

The Whisper Man - August 28, 2026

Why We’re Excited: The stacked cast would be enough regardless of who was behind the camera, but director James Ashcroft is as much a draw as anyone, as he helmed a pair of excellent and unnerving films with 2021’s Coming Home in the Dark and 2024’s The Rule of Jenny Pen.

Resident Evil - September 18, 2026

What’s Untitled Resident Evil Movie About? The video game adaptation has a medical courier named Bryan (Abrams) finding himself in a survival situation when a zombie outbreak occurs around him. Per the writer/director (via Deadline), it will be “unlike any of the previous films” and a “wild ride.” He’s a big fan of the video games, but at his CinemaCon presentation, Cregger said he’s “not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games,” per Bloody Disgusting.

Why We’re Excited: Zach Cregger earned the respect of horror fans with Barbarian, and blew it out of the water with the Oscar-winning horror film of last year, Weapons. Seems like as good of a time as any for him to take on a franchise, and Resident Evil could use a good movie about it.

Victorian Psycho - September 25, 2026

What’s Victorian Psycho About? Based on the novel of the same name by Virginia Feito, this one’s about a governess named Winifred Notty hired to live with the Pounds family. Since this is in a horror movie list, you can probably guess that it’s no Mary Poppins story.

Why We’re Excited: Maika Monroe has become a mainstay in the horror genre, and her opposite Jason Isaacs is going to be a creepy good time.

Other Mommy - October 9, 2026

What’s Other Mommy About? Based on the novel by Bird Box author Josh Malerman, this upcoming horror flick, which was previously titled Incidents Around The House, is about an eight-year-old girl named Bela who becomes haunted by an entity she calls “Other Mommy.”

Why We’re Excited: Other Mommy is produced by the horror geniuses of our time, James Wan and Jason Blum, and the plotline sounds particularly terrifying.

Clayface - October 23, 2026

What’s Clayface About? James Gunn’s DC universe recently had a very successful start with Superman, and in 2026 the upcoming Clayface movie hopes to continue the streak with a tale Gunn has described as a “pure fucking horror” film, and just in time for Halloween! Between that and the movie’s script being written by Mike Flanagan, who is very famous in the horror space, it’s going to be a lot of horror fans' most anticipated comic book movie. You can check out the first, very haunting footage.

Why We’re Excited: The pages of DC Comics have had some great storylines that can lend themselves to great horror movies, but we just haven’t seen DC or Marvel fully commit to it yet. That’s what makes Clayface most exciting!

Godzilla Minus Zero - November 6, 2026

Why We’re Excited: The first film took home the Oscar for its visual effects, and that’s a huge part of why this sequel has been so eagerly anticipated. Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla is truly the king of the monsters.

Return Of The Living Dead - November 13, 2026

Why We’re Excited: This is the first time we’ll see a movie from this franchise in twenty years. After the long break, we’re so interested in what the iconic horror franchise will be like in 2026.

Werwulf - December 25, 2026

What’s Werwulf About? After tackling vampires for Nosferatu, Robert Eggers is taking on werewolves next with a movie called Werwulf, which he co-wrote with his The Northman collaborator Sjón. It’s set in 13th-century England and is about a mysterious creature that starts to lurk in its countryside, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Why We’re Excited: We loved Nosferatu, and just about everything Robert Eggers has done so far, so who’s to say his streak of creepy good movies won’t continue here?

We don’t have details about his version, but the original novel is about the demonic possession of a 12-year-old girl and the two priests who try to exorcise it out of her.

Why We’re Excited: This cast is actually insane, and Mike Flanagan has a great track record of adapting horror titles in pretty incredible ways.

When one of the rules is broken, Gizmo starts multiplying into destructive little guys, and Billy must try to stop them from destroying his town.

Why We’re Excited: Another Gremlins movie has long been talked about, and we can’t wait to see it finally come to pass. Plus, Steven Spielberg as a producer is always a good sign.

What’s Gladys About? When Zach Cregger was initially making Weapons, he had a chapter for Gladys that he cut. Since the movie became a big hit, Cregger decided he’ll explore her character through her own spinoff movie. Warner Bros recently nailed down the release date for 2028, per Variety.

Why We’re Excited: Weapons was one of the best horror movies we’ve seen recently, and even led Amy Madigan to win an Oscar for the role. Since there wasn’t much about Glady’s origin story, and who she is, we’re so interested in what we’ll learn about her.

There are only a handful of stories about what goes on in the White House and in the country from the point of view of the U.S. President’s spouse. The premiere season of creator Aaron Cooley’s new series offers three that are ripped straight from the history books and performed by some of the most renowned actresses of their generation. Take a look at who is playing whom in Showtime’s The First Lady cast, starting with one of the most powerful and beloved women in Hollywood as one of the most powerful and beloved women in the world.

Viola Davis (Michelle Obama)

The 44th First Lady, Michelle Obama, is the most recent real-life person Viola Davis has portrayed after playing James Brown’s mother, Susie, in Get On Up and the title role of Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom - both music biopics also starring late Marvel star Chadwick Boseman. Speaking of superhero movies, the actress has also appeared in three DCEU installments so far (both Suicide Squad movies and Peacemaker) as Amanda Waller - a character who bears a few similarities to Annalise Keating, her Emmy-winning role from How to Get Away with Murder. Davis also has an Oscar for giving, arguably, her all-time best performance in 2016’s Fences after previously being nominated for Doubt in 2009, The Help in 2012, and later receiving a nod for the aforementioned Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Michelle Pfeiffer (Betty Ford)

Before playing Betty Ford, who served as First Lady from 1974 to 1977, the last real person Michelle Pfieffer played was Bernie Madoff’s wife, Ruth, in the HBO movie, The Wizard of Lies - which earned her her sole Emmy nomination. The actress (also known for the 1999 thriller What Lies Beneath, the 1996 rom-com One Fine Day, 2007’s Hairspray, and more) also starred in 1993's politically inspired drama, Love Field, which earned her her third Oscar nomination after 1989’s Dangerous Liaisons and The Fabulous Baker Boys from 1990. Like Viola Davis, Pfeiffer is a DC movies veteran, haven given one of the greatest Catwoman portrayals ever in 1992’s Batman Returns, and would also join the MCU as Janet Van Dyne in Ant-Man and the Wasp in 2018.

Gillian Anderson (Eleanor Roosevelt)

Before playing Eleanor Roosevelt - the United States’ longest serving First Lady (1933-1945) - Gillian Anderson played royalty (Catherine the Great’s mother, Joanna, with Hulu’s The Great cast for Season 2) and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on Season 4 of Netflix’s The Crown - for which she received her second Emmy. The Chicago native won her first Emmy for her most iconic role, FBI agent Dana Scully, on one of greatest sci-fi shows ever, The X-Files. Anderson has also starred on NBC’s Hannibal as the title character’s psychiatrist, the personification of all media on Starz’s American Gods, and a sex therapist and mother in the Sex Education cast for Netflix.

O-T Fagbenle (Barack Obama)

As Michelle Obama’s husband and the 44th U.S. President, Barack Obama, we have O-T Fagbenle, who - like his on-screen wife on The First Lady - is also known for superhero movies, having appeared in the Black Widow cast in 2021. The British-born actor of Nigerian descent is even better known as Luke Bankole from Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale cast, for his recurring role on HBO’s short-lived queer dramedy, Looking, and appearing alongside the WeCrashed cast for Apple TV+ more recently. Fagbenle also works behind the scenes, most notably on his satirical comedy series Maxxx, which he created, produces, composes, occasionally directs, and stars on in the title role.

Aaron Eckhart (Gerald Ford)

As Betty Ford’s husband and the 38th U.S. President, Gerald Ford, we have Aaron Eckhart, who last played a (fictional) U.S. president in Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen (but not the third installment, Angel Has Fallen). The Thank You For Smoking star - like his on-screen wife on The First Lady - also has a history of comic book movies, having played Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight and a modern interpretation of Mary Shelley’s “The Creature” in I, Frankenstein. More of Eckhart’s more notable credits include 1999’s Oscar-winning Erin Brockovich, the 2003 sci-fi adventure The Core, the dreary family drama Rabbit Hole from 2010, and the 2016 biopic, Sully, opposite Tom Hanks.

Kiefer Sutherland (Franklin D. Roosevelt)

As Eleanor Roosevelt’s husband and the 32nd (and longest-sitting) U.S. President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, we have Kiefer Sutherland, who last played a (fictional) U.S. president on Designated Survivor after years of defending the country by more aggressive means as Jack Bauer on 24. After debuting alongside his father, Donald Sutherland, in 1983’s Max Dugan Returns, he went on to become one of the biggest stars of the decade (and the next) with roles in Stand By Me, the star-studded Western Young Guns and its sequel, and his multiple collaborations with Joel Schumacher (such as The Lost Boys, Flatliners, and A Time to Kill). His additional, notable 21st Century credits include Alexandre Aja’s Mirrors, Lars von Trier’s Melancholia, and a few video game series - namely Call of Duty and Metal Gear Solid.

Jayme Lawson (Young Michelle Obama)

Playing Michelle Obama’s younger self (when her last name was Robinson) is Jayme Lawson, who was last seen holding a political position in The Batman cast as Gotham City mayoral candidate Bella Reál in 2022. She made her feature film debut two years earlier in Farewell Amor and will next share the screen with her The First Lady co-star, Viola Davis, in the historical epic, The Woman King, in 2022. Also, later this year, she will play another historical figure - civil rights activist Myrlie Evers, widow of Medgar Evers - in an upcoming biopic about Emmett Till.

Regina Taylor (Marian Shields Robinson)

Playing Michelle Obama’s mother, Marian Shields Robinson, is Regina Taylor, who made her feature film debut opposite Morgan Freeman in 1989’s Lean on Me and went on to be cast on the Emmy-winning series I’ll Fly Away from 1991 to 1993. This led to a career in more classic films - such as director Spike Lee’s Clockers from 1995, 1996’s Courage Under Fire (opposite Denzel Washington), and 1998’s The Negotiator (opposite Samuel L. Jackson). These days, Taylor is best known for making notable guest appearances on TV shows like NBC’s The Blacklist, The Good Fight on Paramount+, and two episodes of Lovecraft Country on HBO.

Dakota Fanning (Susan Elizabeth Ford)

Playing Gerald and Betty Ford’s daughter, Susan, is Dakota Fanning, who debuted in an ER episode before becoming one of her generation’s most renowned child stars with movies like 2004’s Man on Fire, War of the Worlds the following year, or Coraline as the title role. Playing Cherie Curie in The Runaways (opposite fellow Twilight movies cast member Kristen Stewart) led to more adult roles like Squeaky Fromme in the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood cast or Sara Howard on TNT’s period crime drama, The Alienist. Fanning’s upcoming film, The Nightingale, will be her third collaboration with her sister, Elle, after I Am Sam and the Syfy miniseries, Taken, and their first time not playing the same character at different ages.

Judy Greer (Nancy Howe)

Playing Betty Ford’s friend and secretary Nancy Howe is Judy Greer, who recently portrayed a highly exaggerated version of the very first First Lady, Martha Washington, in Netflix’s America: The Motion Picture voice cast and actually has another fact-based political drama in the works called The White House Plumbers. The actress has well over 100 other acting credits, but is best known as Cheryl Tunt in the Archer cast and for multiple blockbuster franchises - namely the MCU as Ant-Man’s ex-wife, Jurassic World as Bryce Dallas Howard’s sister, or the new Halloween movies as Laurie Strode’s daughter. You may likely recognize her from countless other films, like 13 Going on 30, and TV shows, like Arrested Development, just to name a few.

Ellen Burstyn (Sara Delano Roosevelt)

Playing Eleanor Roosevelt’s mother-in-law, Sara Delano Roosevelt, is Ellen Burstyn, who previously played a U.S. president’s mother twice (Barbara Bush in W. and Elizabeth Hale in Netflix’s House of Cards cast), as well as mother of a former First Lady on USA’s 2012 miniseries, Political Animals, for which she won her second Emmy. The screen legend is even better known for her Oscar-nominated roles in movies like The Last Picture Show, The Exorcist (one of the best horror movies), and Requiem for a Dream, and her Oscar-winning performance as the title character of Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Burstyn also played an older Jessica Chastain in Interstellar, Blake Lively’s daughter in The Age of Adaline, and recently reprised her Emmy-winning role as Bernadette Stabler on Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Lily Rabe (Lorena “Hick” Hickok)

Playing Lorena Hicock - a journalist and close friend (or, allegedly, more than a friend) of Eleanor Roosevelt is Lily Rabe, whose last major role in a fact-based political drama was Liz Cheney in Vice from 2018. Ten years after making her screen debut in the 2001 rom-com, Never Again, opposite her mother, Jill Clayburgh, the actress made her first appearance on the show she is best known for: American Horror Story. Some of Rabe’s other notable acting credits include HBO’s six-part drama The Undoing, a couple of episodes of The Underground Railroad on Amazon Prime, and the streaming platform’s acclaimed period drama, The Tender Bar, from director George Clooney.

Jackie Earle Haley (Louis McHenry Howe)

Playing Franklin D. Roosevelt’s advisor Louis McHenry Howe (with no relation to Nancy Howe) is Jackie Earle Haley, who last played a real-life political official (Confederacy VP Alexander Stephens) in 2012’s Lincoln. Like some other The First Lady cast members, he was once a popular child star (best known for the classic sports movie The Bad News Bears), has an Oscar nomination (for 2006’s Little Children), and has starred in a number of comic book adaptations (2009’s Watchmen, the short-lived Human Target series, AMC’s Preacher, Amazon Prime’s The Tick, and Alita: Battle Angel). 

Kate Mulgrew (Susan Sher)

Playing Michelle Obama’s Chief of Staff, Susan Sher, is Kate Mulgrew, who is a bit of a legend on the small screen. She is best known as the first woman to play a Star Trek captain (Kathryn Janeway, whom she debuted as on Star Trek: Voyager and most recently reprised on Star Trek: Prodigy) and for her Emmy nominated role in the Orange is the New Black cast as iron-mitted prison cook Galina “Red” Reznikov. She is also no stranger to comic book adaptations (she voiced Red Claw on Batman: The Animated Series) and still dabbles in sci-fi, such as Showtime’s upcoming series remake of The Man Who Fell to Earth.

In the never-ending slew of 2021 Netflix TV shows that are coming out, several are returning with new seasons, such as The Witcher Season 2 or You Season 3. However, a show with plenty of great ensemble characters, heartwarming stories and hilarious moments is coming back, as well, as part of the 2021 fall TV schedule, and that is Sex Education Season 3.

But, people who are fans of the show might wondering why some of these actors may look so familiar, such as Asa Butterfield or Gillian Anderson. Look no further, because here, we’ll be talking about where you might have seen the Sex Education cast before.

Asa Butterfield (Otis Milburn)

As one of the main stars of Sex Education, Otis Milburn is an adorkable teen who struggles with his mother’s occupation as a sex therapist, but learns to accept it over time. Asa Butterfield portrays Otis Milburn, and has had roles in several films.

Some of his big hits have been the drama, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, the fantasy film Hugo, Ender’s Game, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, X+Y, The Space Between Us, and many others. Butterfield also had a recurring guest role on the fantasy show Merlin before his big role in Sex Education, and, hopefully, now we might get to see him more on the silver screen.

Gillian Anderson (Jean Milburn)

I think we’ve all fallen in love with Jean Milburn as the cool mom who offers great advice when it comes to love and sex, and no one could bring that charisma quite like Gillian Anderson. Anderson has been around in the business for a long time, but one of her biggest roles is portraying FBI Special Agent Dana Sully in the TV series The X-Files, a role she would reprise in two films based on the series.

Anderson has had plenty of other starring roles too. In terms of TV, she had a main role in the crime drama The Fall, played Margaret Thatcher in The Crown, and had recurring and guest roles in several other shows, including Hannibal, American Gods, The Great, and others.

She’s also had success in film too, including bigger roles in titles such as Shadow Dancer, Viceroy’s House, the Studio Ghibli film From Up On Poppy Hill, The Spy Who Dumped Me, and more.

Ncuti Gatwa (Eric Effiong)

Eric is definitely one of my favorite characters in Sex Education, because I think we could all use a friend like him in our lives and how he constantly looks out for Otis.

Ncuti Gatwa portrays Eric Effiong in the show, and Sex Education has been his biggest role thus far. Prior to this part, he had a couple of roles in TV miniseries, like Bob Servant and Stonemouth, both of which had minor roles for him. However, with how popular Eric is on this show, I’m sure it won’t be long until this talented actor starts to pop up in several more films and TV series soon.

Emma Mackey (Maeve Wiley)

In every high school show, there’s always that one girl who’s a bit of a social outcast, and that was Maeve in Sex Education. However, she ends up becoming a good friend to Otis, and runs a sex therapy clinic beside him.

Emma Mackey had her breakout role playing Maeve in the show. Prior to this, she had a couple of parts in a few film shorts, and later on would have roles in the films The Winter Lake and Eiffel. However, coming up she will be in both Death on the Nile, and star as Emily Bronte in the film, Emily, so keep an eye out for this one to pop up on movie screens soon.

Connor Swindells (Adam Groff)

To be honest, Adam Groff sort of reminds me of Sex Education’s version of Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender- always being compared to his sister, and has a tense relationship with the school’s headmaster, who is also his father. But, even he is trying to work on himself now.

Connor Swindells plays Adam, and has had some success prior to his role in Sex Education. He had a part in the thriller The Vanishing, and played a role in the period romance, Emma. He has also guest-starred on several TV shows, such as the Hulu original series Harlots, Jamestown, and as of 2021, had a role in the miniseries Vigil. Soon, I’m sure he’ll be popping up in far more projects.

Kedar Williams-Stirling (Jackson Marchetti)

There always needs to be that standout student in every school, and Jackson Marchetti is most certainly that, acting as head boy of his school and a swimming champion in Sex Education.

Kedar Williams-Stirling plays the young man in the Netflix series, and has been in a few roles prior to his part in Sex Education. He was in action film Shank, Montana, and the comedy Changeland. In terms of TV, he had a main role in the fantasy series Wolfblood, and a recurring part on the drama, Will. He’s also guest starred in several shows, such as Doctors, Roots, Death in Paradise, and more.

Alistair Petrie (Michael Groff)

We already talked about Adam in Sex Education - but now we have to take a look at his strict father, Michael Groff, played by the talented Alistair Petrie. Petrie has been in several films prior to his role in Sex Education, as well as TV shows.

In terms of movies, Petrie has appeared in films like The Bank Job, Cloud Atlas, Rush, the Star Wars film, Rogue One, and several others. He also has had success in TV, appearing in the dystopian series, Utopia, the BBC television series, The Night Manager, had a guest role in the British drama Sherlock, and several others. He also currently has a main role the British espionage series, Deep State, so if you’re looking for some spy fun, be sure to check him out in that.

Mimi Keene (Ruby Matthews)

You know them, you love them - it’s the leaders of the Untouchables in Sex Education, Ruby Matthews - a girl you just want to hate at first, but she starts to grow on you over time. Mimi Keene plays Ruby in the show, and Sex Education is one of her first big roles

However, Keene has had success prior to her work in the Netflix original. She had a voice role in the Castlevania video game series, and was a series regular on the British soap opera, EastEnders, for 122 episodes. Recently, she played a minor role in the biographical film, Tolkien, based on the life of famous author J.R.R. Tolkien.

Aimee Lou Wood (Aimee Gibbs)

There are just so many popular girls in Sex Education that at this point I’m beginning to lose track, but Aimee is definitely one of my favorites due to her cute friendship that she has with Maeve. Aimee Lou Wood portrays the teenager, and, believe it or not, this is her first role in both film and TV.

Prior to her role in Sex Education, Aimee Lou Wood had been very active in theater, including roles in Mary Stuart, People, Places and Things, Downstate, and Uncle Vanya. Hopefully with this big role on Netflix, we’ll get to see a lot more of her in on screen soon.

Chaneil Kular (Anwar)

Another member of the Untouchables, Anwar seems like a rude person and sort of mean until you really get to know him, and see he has a hard time opening up to new people. Chaneil Kular portrays the gay teen on Sex Education, and has mainly kept his career focused in television.

Kular had a big role in the TV series, Doctors, in 2019, a guest role on Informer, and had a recurring role on the TV miniseries, Black Narcissus.

Simone Ashley (Olivia Hanan)

Olivia Hanan is another member of the Untouchables, and probably has one of the strangest stories out of all of them, in my opinion (Season 2 was a trip for Olivia with that orgasm storyline). Regardless, Simone Ashley plays the teen, and has been in a couple of bigger projects prior to her role in Sex Education.

She had a role in Kill Ben Lyk and a minor role in the video game film, Detective Pikachu. She also has had several guest roles in TV shows like Wolfblood, Broadchurch, Doctors, and a couple of others, as well. Coming up, she is actually going to have a main role in a hugely popular Netflix series, Bridgerton Season 2, so keep an eye out for her.

James Purefoy (Remi Milburn)

Remi in Sex Education is a therapist with a bit of a sex addiction, but sometimes, it’s always enjoyable to see him come around and spark up drama in the lives of our favorite characters. Remi Milburn is played by James Purefoy, who has been plenty active on camera.

In terms of film, he’s appeared in several bigger roles in A Knight’s Tale, Vanity Fair, John Carter, Churchill, Interlude in Prague and several others. With television, James Purefoy become widely known for his role as Mark Antony in the historical drama, Rome. After that, he would have major roles in crime thriller The Following, the drama Hap and Leonard, and as Laurens Bancroft in the Netflix series Altered Carbon. Recently, he had a main role as Wayne Addison in El Candidato.

Tanya Reynolds (Lily Iglehart)

Look, I could do a whole article on Lily Igleheart in Sex Education. But, I don’t need to get into that alien erotica stuff, so let’s just move on to Tanya Reynolds, the talented actress behind her.

Reynolds has had a couple of bigger roles prior to her part in the Netflix series. She played Mrs. Augusta Elton in the drama Emma, and was part of the main cast of British drama, Delicious. She’s also had several guest appearances on TV shows like Outlander, The Bisexual, Death in Paradise, and more.

Patricia Allison (Ola Nyman)

I feel like the daughter of a love interest on a show is always one of the sweetest characters, and that’s who Ola Nyman is in Sex Education.

Patricia Allison plays the girl on the series, and has mainly stuck to TV in her career. Prior to her role on Sex Education, she appeared in a string of guest appearances on many TV shows, like Moving On, Unprecedented, and the 2019 TV adaptation of Les Misérables. Sex Education is her first big role, and I'd love to see more of her very soon.

Mikael Persbrandt (Jakob Nyman)

Playing Jakob Nyman, handyman/Ola's dad/Jean's boyfriend on Sex Education, is Mikael Persbrandt. Persbrandt has appeared in several Swedish movies, but one of his biggest roles was playing Gunvald Larsson in the Beck movie series.

He’s also widely known for his starring role in the Academy-Award nominated film, In A Better World. Persbrandt also had a role as Beorn in The Hobbit franchise, and played a part in the British historical fiction series, The Last Kingdom.

Anne-Marie Duff (Erin Wiley)

Erin Wiley is a bit of a wildcard in Sex Education, but I do hope that the mother of Maeve and Sean will be able to make amends for how long she’s been absent in their lives.

Anne-Marie Duff plays Erin on the show, and some of her biggest roles have been playing Fiona Gallagher on the British version of Shameless, a role in the His Dark Materials cast, The Virgin Queen, Before I Go To Sleep, and several others.

With such a large ensemble cast, it feels great to have them all back together for Sex Education Season 3.

Gillian Anderson became an icon on the small screen thanks to her work opposite David Duchovny on The X-Files, and now the actress has shared a look at her recent reunion with her longtime co-star. Considering that the two have reunited to reprise their roles as Agents Scully and Mulder a number of times since the original run of the Fox series came to an end, even with no sign of another revival season it's hard not to wonder what brought them back together.

Judging by the company that Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are keeping in the photos that Anderson shared of their reunion, they may well have gotten together for reasons that have nothing to do with investigations into the paranormal and a will they/won't they TV dynamic that hooked and frustrated viewers for decades. Take a look:

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny weren't just hanging out with each other during their recent reunion, but also with Anderson's adorable dog Stella! The photos don't show a whole lot of Stella, but congratulations to her (and Duchovny) for making a new friend. The real X-File here might be why it took so long for fans to get to see this cute trio together. And since it didn't happen on their iconic show, there will probably be no aliens, government conspiracies, and/or cigarette-smoking men to cause any trouble!

Stella has turned up several times on Gillian Anderson's Instagram account since making her furry debut back in December 2020, but this is the first one that might get The X-Files fans thinking about a Mulder and Scully reunion. The duo returning to the roles that made them famous (although both have gone on to star in hit series since) wouldn't be unprecedented, as they came back together for The X-Files: I Want to Believe in 2008 and two seasons of an X-Files revival on Fox, with Season 10 in 2016 and Season 11 in 2018.

The Season 11 finale ended with plenty of unanswered questions, especially compared to the original series finale with Season 9 in 2002, but I'm guessing that I'm not the only longtime X-Files fan who would be fine with the show ending there. Season 11 delivered what I felt at the time was "the most WTF finale ever," and I'm perfectly happy to remember The X-Files heyday rather than getting more new episodes.

I'm guessing that it's far more likely that Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny reunited socially, although it's fun to imagine that this was Duchovny recruiting Anderson to appear in his upcoming TV show. Even that doesn't seem all that probable, with Gillian Anderson keeping plenty busy with her own projects, and recently winning a Golden Globe for her performance as Margaret Thatcher on The Crown.

For now, fans can catch Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny again with the eleven seasons of The X-Files (although Duchovny was absent for most of Seasons 8 and 9), all of which are streaming on Hulu now, among a number of great horror TV shows.

David Duchovny made a name for himself on television thanks to his long-running role on The X-Files as Fox Mulder, although he went on to star in Showtime's Californication in a role that was definitely different from Mulder. Now, Duchovny is slated to return to Showtime for a new project, and it is high time that somebody get Duchovny's X-Files screen partner Gillian Anderson to appear in a project with him again after the X-Files revival ended on Fox in 2018.

The project bringing David Duchovny back to Showtime is potential series adaptation of the novel Truly Like Lightning, which Duchovny wrote and was published back in February 2021. Deadline reports that the potential Truly Like Lightning show has already received a script order in the development process, with Duchovny attached to play the leading man, write the adaptation, and executive produce if the script order results in a series order. Also on board are Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, who wrote and directed The Peanut Butter Falcon. They would direct and executive produce the series.

So, what does that have to do with Gillian Anderson? Well, the plot of Truly Like Lightning could provide some potential characters for Anderson, and her roles ranging from The X-Files to Sex Education to play a sex therapist to The Crown prove that she has the range to do more than just play the skeptic to David Duchovny's believer during their time on the Fox series. The plot centers on Bronson Powers, to be played by Duchovny, who is a former Hollywood stuntman with three wives and ten children who has embraced a life off the grid and unplugged in the desert of Joshua Tree.

Bronson's life is turned upside down when a real estate developer attempts to ruthlessly force him off his desert land, which could result in his family being exposed to the temptations of modern 21st century America, which Bronson had tried to leave behind. The book is described as "a heartbreaking meditation on family, religion, sex, greed, human nature, and the vanishing environment of an ancient desert," and the real estate developer in the novel is a female character.

Between the three wives and the real estate developer, there are four characters right there that Gillian Anderson could play for an adaptation! With David Duchovny so heavily involved with the potential project plus preexisting ties with Showtime, it's not unimaginable that he could bring Anderson in if she was so inclined and had the time.

Admittedly, there is the point that at least some viewers might focus more on the X-Files reunion than anything happening in the new show, but Duchovny and Anderson are skilled enough actors that working opposite each other on such a different project could totally work, right? As a veteran X-Files fan, I have to say that I'd rather see Anderson as a separate and more distinct character than one of three wives. Although it would be fun to actually get to see them play love interests on screen for once after the Mulder/Scully situation!

For his part, David Duchovny has said that he's "so excited to be heading back home to Showtime" and that he "can't wait to begin" the new collaboration for Truly Like Lightning. There is no guarantee at this point that Truly Like Lightning will get a series order, but with the writer of the book so heavily involved and formerly starring and executive producing a hit for the network, I can definitely see David Duchovny getting his project off the ground and adapted into a TV show, with or without Gillian Anderson for another X-Files reunion.

The Hilaria Baldwin heritage scandal continues. Only this time, it is at the behest of her husband Alec Baldwin. The Saturday Night Live star deleted his Twitter account again on Thursday following backlash from his tweet that reignited the debate about cultural accents. Consequently, he also dragged The Crown actress Gillian Anderson into it.

On Instagram, Alec Baldwin posted an almost 10-minute-long video explaining the lead up to his decision to quit Twitter for good. Apparently, Baldwin shared a link on Twitter about how Gillian Anderson frequently switches between an American and British accent, captioning it as, “Switching accents? That sounds…fascinating.” It was a nod to the situation surrounding his wife, who is accused of faking a Spanish accent, and the Twitterverse was not having it. Baldwin had this to say on the matter:

The reaction online to Alec Baldwin's seeming dig at Gillian Anderson, who played Margaret Thatcher on The Crown, was huge to say the least. Many are of the opinion that Anderson’s fanbase single-handedly ran Baldwin off the site. Anderson herself hasn't responded to the scandal on social media.

Alec Baldwin wanted to make clear in his Instagram video, however, that the tweet was not intended as a dig at Gillian Anderson, but more so an attempt at irony, saying,

In other words, Alec Baldwin thought it was hypocritical how others may get a cultural pass versus how his wife Hilaria was dragged through the coals. She was accused online of cultural appropriation. She admitted at the time that she was born in Boston but grew up bilingual and raises their six children the same way.

Regardless, Alec Baldwin should know that the Internet comes for everyone. Especially if you're going to bring up Golden Globe-winner/lord and savior Gillian Anderson, if you ask me.

The Crown is coming back, and fans can expect to see some new faces in the new season. While Queen Elizabeth II will remain the same from last season, Gillian Anderson will be playing Margaret Thatcher in Season 4. That said, the X-Files and Sex Education actress thinks it would be “fascinating” to play the Queen.

Yes, the Queen, previously played by Claire Foy and currently played by Olivia Colman. Meanwhile, Season 4 will be the tale of two Margarets as Gillian Anderson makes her debut as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Well ahead of the upcoming season, Olivia Colman raved over Anderson’s performance as Thatcher. If Anderson got the chance to play someone else, it would be between Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret.

The Crown has already recast Princess Margaret for the third and final time with Oscar nominee Lesley Manville of The Phantom Thread. Gillian Anderson is readying for the world to take in her performance as Margaret Thatcher. So, why would Anderson have been fascinated to take on the role of the Queen? Anderson told Variety:

Gillian Anderson considered Princess Margaret as someone she would be interested in playing as well as Queen Elizabeth II herself. I can honestly see Anderson playing both real-life roles with aplomb. Anderson acknowledges that playing the Queen would be a bit more of a change from her usual roles where her characters openly speak their mind. The Queen, by virtue of her position, has to temper that more.

As for Gillian Anderson’s fellow newcomer to The Crown, Emma Corrin has a similar answer to the other character she would like to play. Corrin will be taking on Princess Diana, who makes her debut on the super-expensive series in Season 4. It will be Corrin’s first and only season playing the part. Elizabeth Debicki will play Diana in the fifth and sixth seasons of the series. On playing another role, Corrin picked:

Princess Margaret is a two-for-two with the Crown newcomers. In an interesting Princess Margaret related tidbit, Helena Bonham Carter revealed that she sought out Margaret’s spirit for her permission to play her. Gillian Anderson may have gone through a different process in preparing to play It the late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Whatever the case, Anderson is playing Thatcher in Season 4.

It will be a more than a minute before fans of the royal drama get to see Season 5 of The Crown, so savor the excitement of the upcoming season. Production on Season 5 is not slated to begin until June of next year (2021). The Crown’s fourth season will premiere on Sunday, November 15, on Netflix as one of this fall’s premieres. Season 4 is one of the many new TV shows arriving on the streaming giant this year.

There has never been, nor will there ever be a show like Hannibal. A total of 39 episodes aired between April 2013 and August 2015, and each one is both elegantly beautifully and also nightmarishly horrific – to the point where you unanswerably question how any of it managed to find its way on to network television. It’s a remarkable work of art that ended far too soon on NBC, but thankfully it is now finding a whole new audience thanks to the fact that it is streaming on Netflix.

Much of Hannibal’s greatness derived from the special vision of showrunner Bryan Fuller, his awesome team of writers, and the excellent directors employed, but it also has a stellar cast that has continued to do amazing work in the years since the show ended. So what exactly are they up to? We’ve put together this feature to dig into that very question, and we’ll begin with the series’ titular monster:

Mads Mikkelsen (Dr. Hannibal Lecter)

Anthony Hopkins starred in a trilogy of films as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, his performance in the first one earning him an Academy Award, and many believed that he perfectly defined the role and that nobody could ever put on a comparable iconic turn. Then Mads Mikkelsen came along and totally redefined the sociopathic, cannibalistic serial killer for a new generation. Since then, his excellent work has continued in a high profile way, playing characters in the 2016 blockbusters Doctor Strange and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Switching things up in terms of medium, he plays a key role in the 2019 video game Death Stranding, and while also making films in his native Denmark, he has a supporting role in the upcoming Chaos Walking starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley.

Hugh Dancy (Will Graham)

In a television age full of investigator characters who have the ability to solve cases in non-traditional ways, Hugh Dancy’s Will Graham still managed to stand out as a remarkable character in Hannibal – both when operating as his serial killer friend’s puppet, and as his hunter. In the years since the show ended Dancy has done some feature work, namely starring opposite Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson in 2019’s Late Night, but he has primarily stuck to the small screen. His time playing John Zabel on the Showtime thriller Homeland came to an end in April, but he now has a recurring role on CBS All Access’ The Good Fight.

Laurence Fishburne (Jack Crawford)

At the start of Hannibal, Laurence Fishburne was definitely the biggest name in the cast, having played roles in film and television going back to the late 1970s, and his career has in no way slowed since the end of the NBC drama series.

In addition to being one of the few major actors to have a role in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe (as Dr. Bill Foster and Perry White, respectively), he is also part of the John Wick franchise (expected to return in the developing John Wick: Chapter 4), and still has his recurring role on ABC’s Black-ish. Quibi subscribers can see some of his most recent work on the series #Freerayshawn, and he has a number of features in the works – including The Ice Road with Liam Neeson, The Blacksmith with Nick Jonas, and Crimson Blues with Tom Jane.

Caroline Dhavernas (Dr. Alana Bloom)

Caroline Dhavernas went into Hannibal as a Bryan Fuller veteran, having played the lead role in Fuller’s Niagara Falls-set comedy Wonderfalls from 2004, and as Dr. Alana Bloom she plays one of the most complex and vital roles in the show – really becoming a totally different person from who we meet in the pilot to who she is at the end of Season 3. Since 2015 most of her work has been in the Great White North (where she comes from), including multiple Canadian shows such as Les Beaux Malaises, Blue Moon, and Mary Kills People (which Hannibal fans should note appropriately features Dhavernas as the titular Mary – though the series isn’t really what you think).

Scott Thompson (Jimmy Price)

The Kids In The Hall fans were extremely well-aware of Scott Thompson long before his time playing crime scene investigator Jimmy Price, and by extension he provided a bit of comfort with his affable spirit in Hannibal, as his light energy helped balance the true nightmares of the show. Since the end of the crime serial drama he has had a few recurring roles on series like What Would Sal Do? and The Simpsons, but most of his work has been doing single episode spots on a variety of shows. His most exciting upcoming project is a revitalization of The Kids In The Hall, which will reunite him with old cohorts Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, and Mark McKinney.

Aaron Abrams (Brian Zeller)

Looking at Aaron Abrams’ filmography, he’s very clearly a “no gaps in the resume” kind of guy. Hannibal fans will best remember him as Brian Zeller, the fellow crime scene investigator who provided plenty of excellent banter with Jimmy, but he has had plenty of roles in the last few years including on TV shows like Masters of Sex and Grey’s Anatomy, and in movies like The Open House starring Dylan Minnette and The Lovebirds with Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae. He can presently be seen playing Congressman Matthew Weitz on ABC’s Blindspot, which is a role he has been playing on and off since Season 1 of the show in 2016.

Gillian Anderson (Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier)

Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier was a particular standout on Hannibal because she was one of the few original characters created for the show – and Gillian Anderson played the part to perfection, particularly her drive to survive under horrifying circumstances, and the duplicitousness that emerges as a result. Having already been a genre legend prior to the NBC horror series, Anderson’s career didn’t really take much of a hit with the cancellation, as she has kept very busy – her work including a return to the role of Dana Scully for two new seasons of The X-Files.

More recently she has become a big presence on Netflix, as she not only has a major part on the comedy series Sex Education, but will also be playing Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the upcoming season of The Crown.

Hettienne Park (Beverly Katz)

Few major Hannibal characters faced a grisly end quite like that experienced by Beverly Katz, who was cut into slices by the titular killer and displayed on a series of glass slides. It was both gruesome and sad to see, given that Hettienne Park was a wonderful presence on the show, and she has continued to get steady small screen work since. Like Aaron Abrams, Park also plays a recurring role on Blindspot, and also has episodes of The Blacklist and Prodigal Son on her resume. In 2020 she played the role of Tamika Collins on the HBO Stephen King adaptation series The Outsider (it remains unclear if it will be getting a Season 2, or will simply exist as a miniseries).

Kacey Rohl (Abigail Hobbs)

The life of Abigail Hobbs in Hannibal is an exclusively tragic one, as she went from being forced to help her father murder young women so that he wouldn’t murder her, to helping Hannibal Lecter cover up his crimes after presenting himself as an ally. Kacey Rohl does excellent work in the role, and has picked up a number of significant parts in notable projects in recent years. She’s played recurring characters on shows including Wayward Pines, Arrow, and Fortunate Son, and can now be seen playing Marina Andrieski on SyFy’s The Magicians.

Lara Jean Chorostecki (Freddie Lounds)

The Freddie Lounds depicted in Hannibal by Lara Jean Chorostecki is quite different than the one in the book and previous adaptations, starting with the fact that she is written as a woman instead of a man, but what remains consistent is that the actress, like Stephen Lang in Manhunter and Philip Seymour Hoffman in Red Dragon before her, put on a memorable turn as the journalist. Between 2015 and 2017 Chorostecki starred in two television shows, ABC’s Designated Survivor and CBC’s X Company, and most recently she has appeared on two episodes of Condor on the Audience Network.

Raul Esparza (Dr. Frederick Chilton)

It seems fitting to follow Freddie Lounds with Dr. Frederick Chilton, as the moral-less psychiatrist notably winds up facing the fate in Hannibal that Lounds experiences in Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon novel (which is to say disfigured by Francis Dolarhyde and set on fire).

As Chilton, Raul Esparza makes you grind your teeth, but that’s just proof that he does his job perfectly. The actor, who was also a Bryan Fuller veteran prior to the NBC show thanks to a pair of Pushing Daisies episodes, has mostly kept to the small screen in the last few years, with recurring roles on Hulu’s The Path and Netflix’s Bojack Horseman. He’s also continued to play Rafael Barba on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (a character he has been playing since 2012), and he recently did an episode of The Good Fight (reuniting him with Hugh Dancy).

Netflix found a winner in Sex Education. The British comedy / drama about teens (and, sometimes, the adults who are trying to teach them) who are attempting to figure out sex, romance, relationships and how those things fit into their lives quickly captivated audiences when Season 1 debuted a year ago, becoming one of the streamer's most watched shows in 2019. But, it turns out that Gillian Anderson, one of Sex Education's stars, wasn't so keen on the show when she first read the script. In fact, she threw it in the trash. Oh, well!

So, seeing as how pretty much everyone who watched Sex Education loved it immediately, what was so wrong with the script for the pilot that Gillian Anderson felt the need to see those pages returned to the Earth so speedily? Here's what she had to say about her initial reaction:

I suppose it's not too hard to see where Gillian Anderson was coming from when she read that first bit of the Sex Education script. The series focuses on Otis (Asa Butterfield), a teenager who's having trouble masturbating and, well, mastering relationships with anyone other than his best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), whose mom, Jean (Anderson), just happens to be a very open and sex positive sex and relationship therapist.

Even though Otis clearly has his own issues, it turns out that he's absorbed some of his mom's facility for doling out advice, and at the urging of Eric and bad girl Maeve (Emma Mackey) he begins to help fellow students with their sex and romance problems...for a fee.

It mostly sounds like Gillian Anderson thought that the set up for Sex Education was just too obvious for it to be worth her time. And, it probably didn't help that the first few minutes of the first episode involve two teenagers having sex while one of their parents are at home (and the guy trying, unsuccessfully, to fake an orgasm), Otis awkwardly meeting Jean's latest sexual conquest the morning after and Eric chiding Otis over not having had sex during summer break when everyone else (seemingly) has.

I mean, I loved the first episode of the show and remember well how it led to me binging the first season in a couple of days. But, after laying it all out and thinking about those first few minutes from Gillian Anderson's perspective, even I can admit that it seems like maybe not the best way to get the Sex Education ball rolling. But, it does all come together as a surprisingly sweet and funny (but still kinda naughty) whole that will leave folks looking back on that time in their lives with fondness.

Gillian Anderson’s performance is already getting massive accolades from her Oscar-winning co-star, Olivia Colman. Colman is wearing the tiara as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown’s latest season. Claire Foy previously portrayed the monarch during the series' first two seasons.

Season 3 awaits! However, the early tease of an excellent performance is always welcome. In the light of The Crown’s new season, Olivia Colman is already building buzz around Gillian Anderson’s portrayal of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Speaking about Anderson’s performance, Colman offered high praise, telling EW:

How nice is that? Gillian Anderson will originate The Crown’s take on Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. In Season 4, the new line-up of actors playing the central roles will have one season under their crown. That’s right, when fans tune in to Season 3 of the expensive costume drama, they will see a lot of new faces.

Along with Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, there will be a new Prince Phillip. Outlander’s Tobias Menzies is replacing Doctor Who’s Matt Smith. The Queen’s sister Princess Margaret will also be played by a different actress. Helena Bonham Carter is taking over from Vanessa Kirby. Last year, The Crown also found its Princess Anne.

Season 4 of The Crown will cover even more history with the royal family. For reference, Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister in 1979. The evolving timeline provided a different experience for Olivia Colman. Reflecting on the difference between Season 3 and Season 4, Colman said:

It will be a while before The Crown’s viewers get a chance to join, Olivia Colman and company, for the fun of Season 4. It has been a long road to Season 3. Following its premiere, the wait for Season 4 begins. Fans are no strangers to having to wait for the show’s royal family to return. Season 2 premiered in 2017.

All the way back in 2018, fans got their first look at Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown’s third season. Just remember that after you finish binging the latest season, you should be an impressive performance from Gillian Anderson to anticipate. I think Anderson is a fantastic actress, so expectations are understandably high for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher.

Prepare for the regal performances that will comprise Season 3! The third season of The Crown bows on November 17 on Netflix, among other premieres. The third season marks one of this fall’s premieres.

For its upcoming original series Sex Education, Netflix released a first trailer that does not shy away from its central subject matter. Many viewers likely won't shy away from the prospect of X-Files fave Gillian Anderson as a provocative sex therapist with a unique approach to parenting. Check out the first full trailer below, which centers on Asa Butterfield's teenager Otis unwittingly becoming his school's go-to source for all things down and dirty.

Even though the trailer kicks off with Gillian Anderson's Jean Milburn asking her son about his recent habits where he pretends to masturbate -- the therapist mostly takes a backseat to all the younger characters on display. Normally, I'd complain more about the actress' sidelining, but Sex Education does look like a pretty solid and fun show with some offbeat charms, so I'm game to try and enjoy it all.

In laying out its narrative thrust -- pun intended -- Sex Education's trailer showcases the gamut of emotions that will be on display. As someone whose home life is revealed to be filled with sexually charged conversations, sex manuals, sex videos and more, Otis becomes his high school's go-to source for information and advice about hooking up. Of course, textbook knowledge doesn't always match up with experienced know-how, so I expect Otis will do some advanced learning of his own as the season progresses.

In a turn of events that feels partially cribbed from a Saved by the Bell writers room, Otis joins his best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and the brilliant "bad girl" Maeve (Emma Mackey) to start up an unofficial sex therapy clinic for other students. We get to hear some of the problems suffered by the other teens, too, such as one girl whose "pubes are out of control," and one dude who wishes he had a "normal dick." Rawr?

Don't expect for Sex Education to be solely full of puerile gags and awkward moments for the sake of being awkward. Creator Laurie Nunn seems to be shooting for a more genuine slice-of-life approach to the humor here, as opposed to an American Pie-esque array of shock humor. The new series isn't wholly fixated on jokes and silly situations, either, and it looks like Sex Education will explore the very real issues and curiosities that many teenagers develop upon reaching a sexual awakening.

For instance, the trailer shows us Eric fully made up and decked out in women's clothing, and also teases that his relationship with his father may stand in the way of his genuine desires. And assuming Eric is the person seen punching that other student in the hallway, one could assume that dust-up was also related to Eric's non-curricular interests.

As well, viewers see Maeve dealing with some kind of a medical situation while in the hospital, which could be tied to a slew of different scenarios. Perhaps she's having an abortion following one regrettable night, or maybe she's going through the preliminary stages of getting some kind of sexual reassignment surgery. Or, if I may go out on a limb here, she might just have a really bad case of the flu.

I'll admit that most of my excitement for Sex Education was initially tied to Gillian Anderson's casting, since she tends to pick outstanding TV projects,such as The Fall and Hannibal, among many others. However, the full trailer has convinced me there will be much more to enjoy about the new Netflix series than just the actress' titillating dialogue.

Though she'll always be remembered first as The X-Files' brilliant and pragmatic Dana Scully, actress Gillian Anderson has shown off her numerous talents on plenty of other small screen projects, from The Fall to Hannibal to Bleak House. Her next role will be as a sex therapist on Netflix for the newly announced dramedy series Sex Education, which is also set to star Ender's Game lead Asa Butterfield. And no, this somehow isn't a spinoff of Naomi Watts' short-lived sexy therapist thriller Gypsy.

According to Netflix's announcement, Gillian Anderson will be playing a sex therapist who is uninhibited, which can be kind of a hand-in-hand description. But it won't just be her patients that she's helping, as her influence apparently trickles down to her socially awkward virgin son Otis Thompson, played by Asa Butterfield. With the help of a smart and morally flippant female classmate, he takes it upon himself to set up a sex clinic at his high school, which has to happen on the down-low, of course, since students can't get credits for independently (and non-professionally) operated sex clinics.There, a world of weird and wild problems and issues will be addressed and cringed at.

This will be the first big TV project for Gillian Anderson following the end of The X-Files Season 11, and it was already very clear that she wouldn't be returning for Season 12 of the fan-favorite sci-fi drama. (She had an excellent response to the claims that her lack of involvement is why Fox hasn't made any moves to order a new season.) She'd also made headlines by announcing she wouldn't be returning to Starz's American Gods following the exit of former showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green.

Considering how many British miniseries and films she's done over the years, TV fans should be pumped that Gillian Anderson is taking on a project with such a global viewership. And that the show will hopefully play to the actress' comedic strengths, as well as her dramatic ones.

Created by up and coming writer Laurie Nunn, Sex Education will be the first big TV role for Asa Butterfield, who is also known for recent films such as The Space Between Us and The House of Tomorrow. The show is being produced in the U.K. by Eleven Film, and will also star Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells and Kedar Williams-Stirling.

The X-Files was one of the first shows in the recent wave of revivals and reboots when it returned to Fox back in 2016 for Season 10, and Season 11 aired early this year. While Season 11 didn't end on a cliffhanger quite like Season 10, fans have naturally been wondering if the show will return, especially after leading lady Gillian Anderson revealed that she's not looking to come back as Scully. Fox CEO Gary Newman has revealed that there are no plans for another season of The X-Files at this point, and some folks online have called Anderson out as the cause for the show ending. Well, Anderson had a response, and it was pretty hilarious. Check it out!

Gillian Anderson added a pretty hilarious comment after she retweeted an article that connected the lack of an order for Season 12 to her decision to exit the series. According to Anderson, the drop in viewership for The X-Files in Season 11 was the real reason that the show won't be back for another round, at least any time soon. Sure, longtime fans might have a hard time imagining a Season 12 without Anderson as Scully, but would Fox really hold back from more if the ratings and viewership were killing the competition?

Besides, The X-Files creator Chris Carter revealed back in February that he could see the show continuing with or without Gillian Anderson, despite earlier comments to the contrary. Carter believed that there are more stories to tell in The X-Files universe; he might have been on board for a Season 12 even if Gillian Anderson remained firm in her determination not to reprise the role of Scully beyond the Season 11 finale.

Unfortunately for any viewers who would have been interested in a Scully-less Season 12, the ratings and viewership simply weren't there to justify another season. The X-Files revival was a smash hit when it first hit the airwaves in 2016, but it just wasn't as successful when it returned in 2018. The absence of a killer cliffhanger in the finale may mean that it's better for The X-Files to end now rather than continue to stretch the search for the truth even further. After all, the finale ended with a whole bunch of WTF twists, not the least of which was that Scully -- who is not supposed to have any ova left in her body -- is pregnant.

Quite aside from the fact that The X-Files would have to try and find a way to explain Scully's pregnancy since there's no way the Cigarette-Smoking Man could have creepily impregnated her against her will this time around, a Season 12 would have had to deal with impending parenthood for the dynamic duo. Even if Season 12 was just Mulder soldiering along while a pregnant Scully was in hiding in a reverse of Season 9, the baby bombshell from the finale might have overshadowed everything. Yes, at this point, it may be best to remember The X-Files as it was rather than try to find ways to bring it back yet again.

The X-Files made a triumphant return to the small screen in early 2016 with a Season 10 revival. Original series leads Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny reprised their iconic roles as Agents Scully and Mulder for Season 10, and both signed on for the Season 11 that is slated to premiere in the 2017-2018 TV season. While we have yet to see even a single episode of Season 11, some are already wondering if Gillian Anderson would be game for more after the next batch. We don't have a definitive answer at this point, but she made some comments at the recent New York Comic Con that could point toward her leaving the red hair and badge behind in the not-too-distant future.

When asked if she was open to continuing as Dana Scully after Season 11, Gillian Anderson had this to say:

Gillian Anderson's comments at New York Comic Con indicate that she doesn't see much of a future for herself as Scully, but fans don't need to start panicking just yet. Screenrant reports that Fox has already stated that Anderson "has not commented on returning" because it is "premature in that she is currently filming the new event series." We shouldn't take what Anderson had to say at NYCC as a definitive statement about whether or not she would reprise her role as Scully beyond Season 11. Anything can happen, as it seemed doubtful for a while that she would sign on for Season 11 at all. She could well return after Season 11.

From what we know so far, Season 11 will be a rough ride for Scully (and Mulder). The X-Files creator Chris Carter recently revealed that their child William will play a huge part in the next batch of episodes, which means that the show will almost certainly deliver on the William tease of the Season 10 finale. Of course, based on everything that happened to poor William basically beginning with Scully's discovery of her pregnancy, we can bet that trouble is on the way. Apparently being sent away from his trouble-attracting parents wasn't enough to spare him from everything.

A new photo was recently released that revealed Scully is going to be back in the hospital yet again, and the way it was staged seemed like a troubling callback to when Scully was hospitalized after her abduction way back in Season 2. The abduction was arguably the event in Scully's life that really gave her a deeply personal investment in the investigations into the government conspiracies, and an awful lot of bad things have happened to her in the years since. If the staging of the photo is a deliberate callback, we can bet that Scully is in for some serious trouble in Season 11.

Fox has not yet announced an official premiere date for the new season of The X-Files, although we do know that it will be at some point in early 2018. The X-Files was one of the biggest shows of the 1990s, and Agents Mulder and Scully became pop culture icons. They made their way back into the limelight in early 2016 with a Fox revival series that served as Season 10, and even more X-Files is still to come. September 10 marked the 24th anniversary of the series' premiere way back in 1993, when Mulder and Scully were still perky young agents who hadn't been abducted and/or harvested just yet. Gillian Anderson kicked off the social media celebrations with a Twitter post featuring Mulder and Scully in their very first case as partners, back when Scully was meant to debunk Spooky Mulder's investigations into the paranormal. David Duchovny responded to Anderson's tweet with a cute comment of his own, along with an alien emoji. The exchange just makes me want to start whistling the theme song and planning to rewatch some classic X-Files episodes.

Luckily, Fox has made it a lot easier for fans to rewatch the pilot of The X-Files. The network is celebrating the show's 24th anniversary (and all the success it has brought Fox over the years) by making the pilot available streaming on Fox.com and the Fox Now app. If it's been a while since you've seen the episode or just want to give the pilot a try, it'll be streaming for two weeks with all the dated 90s fashion and technology we could possibly want.

We won't have to wait too much longer for more some new episodes courtesy of Fox. The X-Files is returning for another batch of revival episodes at some point in 2018, and the actors are currently filming. While Season 11 won't debut with many other returning shows in the fall, we can probably expect it around midseason 2018, which is when we got Season 10 back in 2016.

Not too many plot details have yet been released about what's to come in Season 11, although we can only hope that the payoff of that infuriating cliffhanger will answer some of the huge questions we still have about the series. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will be back for the season, along with Mitch Pileggi as the long-suffering Walter Skinner, Annabeth Gish as the enigmatic Monica Reyes, and Robbie Amell and Lauren Ambrose as Agents Miller and Einstein. It hasn't been confirmed if William B. Davis will be back as the Cigarette-Smoking Man, but the events of the cliffhanger indicate that he'll probably at least show up in the Season 11 premiere.

The X-Files is coming back to the small screen for another round of revival action. Fans have been waiting ever since February 2016 for more Mulder and Scully, but it was a while before we even knew for sure that the show would be back for another season at all. Given the killer cliffhanger from the Season 10 finale, it definitely came as good news when we learned that Fox had ordered a new batch of episodes. Production on Season 11 kicked off this summer, and leading lady Gillian Anderson has shared a behind-the-scenes look:

Well, it seems that Mulder is going to make a full recovery from what ailed him at the end of Season 10, if David Duchovny's dapper look is anything to go by. Mulder was circling the drain last time we saw him, and Scully believed that his only chance at survival was an infusion of their son's stem cells. Whether the dynamic duo really does reunite with their long-lost son is still up in the air; Mulder's survival isn't. He'll be back, undoubtedly pitching his bizarre theories yet again.

Of course, there wasn't exactly much doubt that Mulder was going to recover. Seasons 8 and 9 really proved that The X-Files was the partnership of Mulder and Scully as much as it was about aliens and monsters and conspiracies. There was no way the show was going to kill off Mulder. Still, it's nice to see David Duchovny suited up in his special agent ensemble. He really wasn't looking too great the last time we saw him as Mulder.

Gillian Anderson's Twitter pic is a fun look at what's to come in Season 11, although it leaves some returning characters out. We know that Mitch Pileggi will be back as the long-suffering Skinner, and Annabeth Gish will reprise her role as Monica Reyes. Robbie Amell and Lauren Ambrose will be back as well, although we don't know how much of them well see as the FBI's other believer/redheaded skeptic duo.

Season 11 will run for ten full episodes, which is four more than the six we got in Season 10. No premiere date has yet been set, but the goal is for the show to air in 2018. Hopefully the new batch of episodes will come earlier rather than later in the new year. We'll have to wait and see.

The X-Files was a revolutionary television show when it debuted in the 1990s as it brought aliens and monsters and government conspiracies to the small screen on a weekly basis. The series ended its original run in 2002, but Fox revived it for a tenth season in 2016. A Season 11 is in the works, and stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are both slated to reprise their roles. As it happens, however, Anderson isn't entirely pleased with one aspect of production:

The news broke earlier this week that the writing staff for The X-Files Season 11 was going to be comprised of seven men and no women. It was a fact that didn't set well with many fans, and Gillian Anderson's tweet proves that she wasn't happy about it either. Her statistic about the number of episodes directed by women in the history of The X-Files is positively staggering, especially considering that Anderson herself was one of the two directors. After directing one episode -- that she actually wrote -- Gillian Anderson makes up 50% of the women who directed episodes of The X-Files.

Even as a longtime fan of The X-Files, I was shocked to discover how few women had directed episodes, although it does make a certain degree of sense in hindsight. Maybe if there had been more women in positions of power behind the scenes, somebody on set would have realized that Scully was pregnant for about 13 months between the end of Season 7 and the end of Season 8. No wonder something was up with William -- he was in the womb for more than a year!

In all seriousness, this wasn't the first time that Gillian Anderson has spoken out about the treatment of women in showbiz, and it's hard to blame her. During the original run of The X-Files, she had to fight to be paid the same as David Duchovny, despite the fact that they pretty equally shared the workload for the first seven seasons. Then, almost unbelievably, she was only offered half of what Duchovny was offered to return for the 2016 revival. Given that Anderson was the only one of the two to remain on the show as a regular for the first nine seasons, it's absurd to think that she wasn't given at least the same amount as Duchovny from the outset.

Hopefully Gillian Anderson's efforts to spread awareness about how few women get to write and direct on big shows will help but an end to the imbalance. Patty Jenkins' success as director of Wonder Woman -- which is poised to become the most successful DCEU movie to date -- may help on the big screen; the small screen may still need some work.

Is The X-Files Renewed?

For quite a while after Season 10 came to an end, it felt like The X-Files was done for good. Sure, Fox and David Duchovny were openly eager to return for more, but Gillian Anderson had her reservations about how much time she would have to spend away from her family to reprise the role of Scully once more, and there's no classic X-Files without both Mulder and Scully in the middle of the action, as Season 9 proved way back in 2001. The longer it took for news to break, the less likely a Season 11 seemed. Then came the announcement that Duchovny and Anderson would be voicing their characters in an audio book. With no accompanying announcement of a TV reunion, that could have been it.

Luckily, it didn't take too much longer for Fox to break the news that The X-Files has officially been renewed for Season 11. The infuriating cliffhanger will be resolved, and we'll get to watch even more monsters, conspiracies, and probably aliens when we get the next batch of episodes.

How Many Episodes Will Be In The X-Files Season 11?

Fox has officially ordered 10 episodes of Season 11 of The X-Files, which is an increase of four from the six-episode Season 10. The ten-episode order falls in line with David Duchovny's previous statements that six episodes was too short for a season but he and Gillian Anderson could definitely not come back for another full 22-episode season. Ten episodes should allow the X-Files team to answer some of the lingering questions from Season 10, delve into new chapters of the mythology with enough detail to make sense, and introduce some entertaining new monsters and mysteries. We'll have to wait and see how many episodes will be Monster of the Week and how many will be devoted to the mythology.

When Will The X-Files Season 11 Premiere?

No official premiere date has yet been set for Season 11, although Fox has announced that it will air at some point in the 2017-2018 TV season. Production is slated to begin this summer. Season 10 aired as a midseason event series, beginning in January and ending in February. Given the huge ratings success The X-Files brought to Fox in early 2016, the odds are pretty good that the network will air Season 11 around the same time. It will obviously run for longer with a ten-episode order, but there's plenty of time in early midseason. We can only speculate at this point, but midseason 2018 is a pretty solid guess.

Who Will Be Back?

At this point, the only big names definitively attached to Season 11 are David Duchovny as Fox Mulder, Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully, and series creator Chris Carter as executive producer. The chances are good that William B. Davis will be back as the Cigarette-Smoking Man, and I know I'd be heartbroken if Mitch Pileggi didn't return yet again as the long-suffering Walter Skinner. Agents Miller and Einstein were still in the mix in the Season 10 finale, so they would make for logical additions to at least the Season 11 premiere. We've probably seen the last of the Lone Gunmen, and both John Doggett and Kersh are probably off the table, but we can likely count on plenty of familiar faces.

Where Did We Leave Off?

The Season 10 finale ended with the fate of the human race in jeopardy thanks to the Spartan virus. Scully came up with a cure, but the crisis was still on a global scale, and she was slightly distracted by the fact that Mulder was circling the drain. Then, what looked an awful lot like an alien spaceship arrived overhead after she mentioned needing to track down her long lost son William. We'll need to see the cliffhanger resolved and some expansion on the William story before we can get back into the Monster of the Week cases at the FBI, so my guess is that Season 11 will get off to a pretty exciting start.

What Questions Still Need To Be Answered?

Any longtime fan of The X-Files knows that there are already about ten years and two movies' worth of questions that are still unanswered, but some are more pressing than others. We've already come up with four huge questions that we absolutely need answered (and you can check out our picks here), but there are plenty left. Who is helping the Cigarette-Smoking Man? Is Scully really immortal? How is Mulder better at hand-to-hand fighting now than when he was a spry 30-something agent? What happened to Doggett? How was William conceived naturally if Scully literally had no ova left?

Obviously, some questions are more likely than others to actually be answered. I've pretty much given up on the answer to the William question, unless somebody cranks up the Moby and convinces Chris Carter to write out a flow chart. Still, there are some that Season 11 almost certainly will address.

Could A Spinoff Happen?

There was all kinds of spinoff chatter when Robbie Amell and Lauren Ambrose were cast as Agents Miller and Einstein, and then even more chatter once their characters debuted as Mulder and Scully 2.0, but nothing ever came of it. The return of Original Recipe Mulder and Scully for Season 11 naturally gets the priority over The X-Files 2.0, but there's still the chance of a spinoff. If one of the episodes of Season 11 is a backdoor pilot, I'd say that it's possible Fox is at least considering Miller and Einstein as stars of a spinoff. We'll have to wait and see.

Her role in Ghostbusters may be as groundbreaking for young women today as Anderson's was on The X-Files in the '90s.

It's fun to see that Kate McKinnon was on-point with the details of her Scully look. Episodes of The X-Files really are pretty easy to place based on the wardrobes and hairstyles of Scully through the years, and it's not too difficult to place which era of Scully is on display in McKinnon's outfit. The short hair indicates that Scully was out of her early '90s 'do of the first couple of seasons, but the bulky trench coat and what looks like a pantsuit top are reminiscent of a Scully before her glam makeover for the last few seasons. Way to go, young Kate McKinnon. Way to go.

I was a huge - and admittedly far too young - fan of The X-Files in my day, so I can totally relate to Kate McKinnon's choice to dress up as Dana Scully. I went through a phase in which I was dying to become a forensic pathologist, and I'm pretty sure I freaked out some of my friends by talking about autopsies. Scully inspired girls, and it's a nice twist that Gillian Anderson made her comeback as Scully in the same year that Kate McKinnon made her grand Ghostbusters debut.

Of course, Ghostbusters didn't have nearly as much overwhelmingly positive buzz leading up to its big premiere as the X-Files revival did. The movie was already being dismissed by certain factions of movie-goers on the basis that it was not going to be the same as the all-male ensemble of the original Ghostbusters movie. A vocal subset of original Ghostbusters fans just didn't want to see Ghostbusters as a movie that would inspire a #thefutureisfemale trend on social media with all four lead characters played by actresses. Only time will tell how much of an effect the new Ghostbusters may or may not have on the future of showbiz for actresses like Gillian Anderson and Kate McKinnon.

While recent years have brought Gillian Anderson acclaim for the thrillers Hannibal and The Fall, 2016 ushered the illustrious Dana Scully back into our primetime lives, and while The X-Files return may not have lived up to our every expectation storywise, Anderson and David Duchovny were as enjoyable as ever. Just not, I guess, the Emmy-worthy kind of enjoyable, as evidenced by the sci-fi revival's glaring absence in today's Emmy nomination announcement. Luckily, Anderson isn't as serious as Scully, and had a bit of fun with the snub on social media.

The year was 1995. Die Hard with a Vengeance would end up the most successful film around the world. The WB, WCW Monday Nitro, Mad TV were all new things on TV, while The Jon Stewart Show and Batman: The Animated Series were ending. Kendall Jenner was born, while Eva Gabor died. And on September 10, several different people thought that the clothes David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson were wearing could and should be seen by both in-house and TV audiences. Thank goodness the actress used Twitter to bring it back to the forefront of everyone's minds, if largely to deflect the disappointment over X-Files getting the snub.

On a particular kind of sliding scale, that image is just about as frightening as anything The X-Files ever laid out on viewers' imaginations, as if those outfits came directly from the back of Flukeman's closet, with the stuff that even he won't put over his gross body. But really, who among us can say that we haven't at some point in our past done something that would haunt us later in life? Even if we all didn't wear a dress with a collar big enough to picnic on, or a jacket that looks like it was created for Las Vegas' Cirque de Funeral Director.

This post brings up not just how much clothing has changed over the years, but also how much TV itself has changed. Anderson was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama from 1996-1999, and though she never won, it stood to reason that she might find a place when the show returned. But there is just entirely too much top-quality TV out there right now, especially when you throw streaming services into it. The six actresses nominated this year are Claire Danes, Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson, Tatiana Maslany, Keri Russell and Robin Wright, and it's impossible to make a clear choice as to who would need to leave in order to put Anderson in the mix. Cookie Lyon would not let that shit slide.

Perhaps aliens will come down and show us that they have their own version of the Emmys, in which Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny and The X-Files are nominated for all the awards. Tune in to see that (not) happen on Sunday, September 18, on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.

The X-Files was a show that changed what could be done with sci fi on the small screen on a major network, and series ranging from Fringe to Supernatural to Bones have drawn inspiration from what worked on The X-Files. As much as the plots of The X-Files were about monsters and aliens and conspiracies, however, the show itself was really about Mulder and Scully. Without David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson clicking onscreen as the lead agents, The X-Files almost certainly wouldn't have lasted for nine seasons, two movies, and one revival. According to Gillian Anderson, clicking with David Duchovny is what actually won her the role of Scully.

In a chat with Deadline, Gillian Anderson had this to say about being cast on The X-Files:

Mulder and Scully became legendary for their chemistry, to the point that fans today still bond over fury at the bee that interrupted hallway time in the first feature film. The fact that their chemistry dates all the way back to the casting process goes a long way to explain how the show survived some of the uneven first season. The mythology may not have made sense and the monsters may have been a bit silly, but those agents sure did know how to gaze.

It's no real surprise that David Duchovny was cast before Gillian Anderson. Although Anderson was the one of the two to win an Emmy for her performance on the show, she was only 24 years of age when she auditioned for The X-Files. She had minimal work experience in showbiz, whereas Duchovny already had a decent resume. It's a lucky thing that Anderson and Duchovny clicked enough to win her the part. The dynamic between Mulder and Scully is what made the show, but Anderson is responsible for turning Scully into a female character that hadn't really been seen on television before.

Fans were also lucky to see Gillian Anderson reprise the role of Scully in a 2016 TV revival. The Season 10 miniseries was such a ratings success that Fox is up for more, and David Duchovny has revealed that he's all in to come back for a potential Season 11. Anderson has expressed reluctance about jumping back into the role of Scully in an ongoing capacity, but she also hasn't said no. Hopefully, the schedules and inclinations of everybody involved will match up enough to bring the series back at least to resolve that painfully frustrating cliffhanger. Maybe Fox should offer Anderson equal pay right off the bat this time.

When it comes to this year's long-awaited return of The X-Files, the only real truth out there is that it was far too short and far too jumbled, though the majority of fans still found much to get giddy about. The sci-fi hit has no plan in place to return for more episodes, and the way Gillian Anderson is talking, Fox had better start making some big decisions quick, otherwise she's making no Scully-proof guarantees. Here's what the actress said about a potential eleventh season.

Is it just me, or does it not sound like Gillian Anderson spoke those words while jabbing a pushpin into a doll's eye? Probably not the case, but that's about as forcefully as you can declare something without sarcasm or snark watering it down. Anderson is laying it out there that she will not simply put the rest of her life on hold just for The X-Files, since she has plenty of other projects to keep her busy these days, including The Fall and American Gods.

If you listen to Fox, though, network exec Dana Walden said that conversations were had with both stars, along with creator Chris Carter, and that she thought everyone was down with another round. But Gillian Anderson's comments to Deadline present a very different picture, and co-star David Duchovny didn't speak up to say that he'd talked to anyone either.

This isn't the first time Anderson is making veiled ultimatums to Fox about another X-Files season, as she'd previously made it very clear that she would not displace herself from her London home for an extended production schedule in New York or Vancouver. The bottom line of that meant that she would make the voyage if the episode order and the amount of money offered both pleased her. (Duchovny is down for a change in episode count, too.) The initial deal Fox offered her for this return did not win her over in the least, so everyone at the network had better think carefully about how they'd like to proceed as far as locking Anderson down.

Considering The X-Files was the most-watched new show of the year so far - and yes, I think anything returning to the air after over a decade counts as "new" - Fox should be throwing money and attention at everyone involved with the sci-fi hit. And time is of the essence.

Everything about the upcoming small screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods is reason for excitement and anticipation, and the latest bit of casting is yet another giant highlight of the pre-production phase. Gillian Anderson will continue to broaden the genre side of her fantastic career, as she has signed on to the fantasy thriller for an important role.

When she arrives in the war-torn world of American Gods, Gillian Anderson will be playing the role of Media, the New Goddess of Television. That’s extremely fitting, considering the actress is most known for her episodic work, especially in recent years. The New Gods in the show represent modern conveniences and technologies, and Media’s abilities allow her to transform into any character that appears on TV, which could make for some amazing sequences in live-action. In the book, she most notably appears early on as I Love Lucy’s Lucy Ricardo, and we’re hoping that Starz’s licensing deals allow for Anderson to show up as other TV icons throughout Season 1 and possibly beyond.

Media is also the spokesperson for the New Gods, and she’ll be their public face and representative, using celebrity likenesses to keep garnering attention. She is powered by people’s obsession with watching things on TVs, computers and mobile devices, so you can imagine stopping her might require Netflix shutting down, and NOT ON MY WATCH.

Ahem. Anderson’s addition to American Gods has her reteaming with showrunner Bryan Fuller, whom she worked with on Hannibal for its latter two seasons. And hopefully they’ll work together on that again one day. But this definitely works for now.

American Gods centers on the recently released prisoner Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle), who takes a job as a bodyguard and companion to the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, who will be played by Ian McShane. As they travel across the country, they discover that a war is brewing between the Old Gods, of which Mr. Wednesday is a card-carrying member, and the New Gods to take over people’s interests. Author Neil Gaiman will be around as a writer on the show and obviously as the best muse imaginable.

We couldn’t be happier to see Gillian Anderson joining what will hopefully be one of TV’s next great series. Losing her in Hannibal was hard, although that was helped along by her stellar performances in the dark and brooding stalker drama The Fall (which will be back for Season 3 later this year) and her return to the iconic role of Dana Scully for the X-Files revival. Not to mention her role in the miniseries epic War & Peace.

American Gods will debut the first of hopefully many seasons on Starz in early 2017.

It’s more than likely that we’ll be getting a new James Bond in the near future. Daniel Craig said he’d rather slit his wrists than make another one, and has apparently refused the offer to return, which begs the question - who will be the next James Bond? Fan favorite names like Tom Hiddleston and Idris Elba have been thrown around, but as of now the future of Bond is a little unclear. Some actors are taking the time to launch their own campaign to play 007 and you’d be surprised at who’s throwing their hat into the ring.

That's right, Gillian Anderson is putting her name out there. You most likely know Anderson best from her role as Agent Dana Scully from the hit TV series X-Files. Scully was an FBI Agent and doctor who, alongside her partner Fox Mulder (David Duchovny), solved supernatural cases that usually involved all manner of creatures like aliens, swamp men, inbred cannibals, and werewolves. I think Scully would rather relax at home with a good book than drink a martini, but she does have the Bond skills to pay the Bond bills.

It looks like this is more of a fan campaign than anything, and Gillian Anderson is just supporting her fans for suggesting her. That doesn’t make it any less cool, though. She’s hardly the first actor to campaign for a role through social media. Tyrese Gibson has been doing a social media campaign to play Green Lantern John Stewart in the DC Extended Universe for a quite a while now. So, while I wouldn’t put her chances as very high to be the next Bond, it’s interesting that she’s even in the conversation. 

So the search for a new Bond continues. There have been no official announcements for a new Bond film yet, but it’s a foregone conclusion that another will happen sometime down the road. The Daniel Craig Bond is founded in more gritty realism than his former counterparts, though you can argue that the last few films have tried to incorporate more gadgets and typical Bond high jinks. Perhaps the next slate of 007 films will return the series to its roots and be a little bit sillier? If we can accept a character as inherently silly as Thor, then anything is possible.

Out of all of the remakes and revivals currently in development and airing, only a few feel like their existence is legitimately outside the realm of “cash grab.” The X-Files’ limited run is definitely one of those exceptions, as it’s a franchise without a definitive ending, and its return is one that longtime fans have been clamoring for pretty much since it left Fox in the first place. And while there’s a sizeable chance that we’ll get to see more from Mulder and Scully after these eps are through, it looks like the biggest obstacle at this point is star Gillian Anderson, who doesn’t exactly sound enthused when asked about the possibility of more X-Files.

Compare that answer to the kinds of things that David Duchovny has been saying, and it seems like Gillian Anderson just isn’t as excited as everyone else is. I mean, she certainly sounds that way when she’s specifically asked about reprising the role that made her a household name, but that jubilance gives way to fitful bursts of reality when she considers becoming Dana Scully again in the future. Considering she brought up “what they’re offering,” maybe she’s still pissed about initially being offered far less than what she’s worth.

Not that she can be blamed for her hesitance. Anderson’s family is obviously going to come first when compared to any TV role, even one as central to her career as this. And the fact that she lives in London, which she tells Zap2It is her favorite city, doesn’t make for easy commutes to and from the set. So if Fox is looking to tap creator Chris Carter for more episodes, the network would be wise to consider keeping things as limited as they are now, for Anderson probably won’t be interested in returning for even a 13-episode season.

And let’s be real here. Fox almost definitely wants to keep this franchise alive. The reviews for “Season 10” have been largely positive, and the ratings prove that lots of people want to keep Mulder and Scully in their lives.

Thankfully, we still have another four episodes of The X-Files left to dig into – or three if you’ve already watched tonight’s episode. And fans of Gillian Anderson are no doubt waiting with baited breath for the third and final season of the intense psychological thriller The Fall, which will hit British TV and U.S. Netflix later this year. Parting is such sweet sorrow, whether it’s a loved one, a TV show, or an appendage. While Hannibal fans may never again get to see new episodes of the outrageously high-quality horror drama, the universe has thankfully provided us one more peek into that world through an unsettling PETA commercial starring Gillian Anderson. We all know that anything with Gillian Anderson in it demands viewing, and this ad is particularly poignant, particularly if you’re into the message it’s delivering. Anderson – or is it Bedelia? – is sitting at Hannibal Lecter’s dinner table, seemingly getting ready to tackle a huge meal all by herself. And then by the end of it, the saying “you are what you eat” becomes ridiculously timely, as it’s revealed she’s about to eat her own leg! Soylent Green is people! That meal is out on a limb! Leggo my leg, yo! I’m done now.

Appropriately, this spot was directed by Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, who not only has ties to the show itself, but also firmly believes in what PETA stands for. Fuller has been a vegetarian for years, and has said publically that his work on Hannibal has made him even more sensitive to animals being used as food. Here’s what he had to say about it.

Thankfully, meat consumption has nothing to do with artistic vision, and Fuller brought his A-game to the ad. It’s truly one of the more gorgeous commercials out there, regardless of how disturbing it is.

Fans are still keeping hope alive that Hannibal will be allowed to continue beyond Season 3, which concluded earlier this year. There’s a chance that it could live on in movie form, though it’s unlikely that a future on TV is in the cards, given Fuller’s preference that the creation process be an organic and timely one, rather than sped up just to hit a specific schedule window.

Fuller’s followers – Fullerwers? – can look forward to seeing his work on screen again when Starz debuts the Neil Gaiman adaptation American Gods next year. And Anderson adorers are well aware that she’ll be reprising her role as Dana Scully in Fox’s upcoming X-Files revival kicking off in January.

Let’s get real here. It seemed pretty impossible to get us more excited about the upcoming X-Files revival than we already were, as seeing the further adventures of Mulder and Scully are as commonly sought out as food and water. But now that production for the series has begun, stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, along with creator Chris Carter, have us positively rabid for its return, thanks a heavy social media presence. Can an alien get rabid? Maybe we’ll find out.

You know you’ve made it to cult status when your chair says your character name instead of your real name. I’m already waiting for these to be auctioned off after this new limited series is finished filming.

Not that Duchovny could be beat on that front, as he tweeted a shot of his chair with one of the episode scripts on it. It’s taking everything I have not to try and reach into the screen and try to pull it out. Not that it would work, but weirder things have happened in the X-Files universe.

While there haven’t been any official images or sneak peeks at the show yet, as it just got underway, Duchovny gave the world a look at the Welcome Binder for the stars and possibly the crew. And it should make sci-fi fans pretty happy to see a UFO in the air on there. Not that there was any doubt, but still.

And speaking of UFOs, because why wouldn’t we be speaking of those, creator Chris Carter recently shared an Instagram photo that has us pretty damned excited about the possibility of seeing some spacecraft in the series.

And even though there are a couple of other exchanges between the stars that got us pumped, we’re ending with a pic shared by Anderson, revealing her hair is back to that signature Scully red. My heart may or may not have melted when I saw this. Not that her as a blonde in The Fall and Hannibal was a bummer or anything, but come on!

Having seen all that, we’re STILL not quite sure where this new look at The X-Files is going in its six-episode run, although there might be a follow-up to one of the show’s most revered episodes, “Home.” We’re also looking forward to seeing more characters in action, like Assistant Director Skinner and The Smoking Man and many more. All we have to do is wait another half-year to see our favorite FBI agents in action, as The X-Files is set to premiere on Sunday, January 24, 2016, with a move to Monday nights in the following weeks. Fingers crossed we get even more X-Files after that.

It’s almost official. After speculation, and teasing from Mulder and Scully themselves, Fox has finally announced that they are in talks with series creator Chris Carter to revive the supernatural, super-successful cult-classic, The X-Files. [insert fan-girl squeal here]

Apparently, after the success of the 24 limited series, Fox decided it would probably be a good idea to bring back another iconic classic. Really though? They needed that as an excuse. We’re sure the recent renewal of a certain other 90s cult drama played a role in the sudden spark. Regardless of motive, this couldn’t be more exciting news. Today, Fox TV Group Chairmen and CEOs Gary Newman and Dana Walden confirmed the chatter between the network and Chris Carter, saying they were hopeful about the outcome. And along with the revival, Fox also revealed that they hoped to have David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their beloved roles of Mulder and Scully. Newman told Entertainment Weekly:

Both Walden and Newman ran 20th Century Fox Television prior to adding Fox broadcast last year, so they were there through the entire run of The X-Files. Walden continued:

But, Carter may not have as much on his plate right now since Amazon just a couple weeks ago canceled his show, The After. It is still unclear why Amazon abruptly decided not to move forward with the series with only a pilot produced, but Carter may be at a pivotal moment where he will highly consider revisiting his older masterpiece.

We already know that the stars of the show are ready and waiting for that call to come back to their iconic characters. Last summer, David Duchovny touched upon the show and his consistent friendship with Chris Carter and Gillian Anderson. When asked if Duchovny wanted to make a sequel to the 2008 X-Files movie, he answered, “I would always want to do it.”

Gillian Anderson’s desire to bring her scientific sceptic back to the screen is no different. And Anderson may have helped in lighting a fire under the Fox executives. The other day the actress was on The Nerdist podcast saying she would be “f***ing overjoyed” to reprise her role. So much so that she basically started a campaign to get a reboot going, telling fans to voice their support by tweeting #X-Files2015 and targeting Fox's Twitter @FoxTV.

A series like The X-Files never truly dies out, even when the show ends. But as we saw it spawn a movie franchise and endless fan campaigns begging for its return, Fox will undoubtedly be trying extra hard to get something this big into production. It will really all come down to the scheduling of the successful actors, because there is no show without Mulder and Scully.

After a terrific first season and (what felt like) a terribly long wait, Hannibal returns to NBC tonight with a highly anticipated second helping. Fans of Bryan Fuller’s take on Thomas Harris’ iconic characters have been starving for more ever since the first taste of his inspired adaptation left their mouths. And two episodes into Season 2, Hannibal is just as delicious as ever. Maybe more.

As I said in the primer for the premiere, it's hard not to use puns when writing about the decadent series, but I'm going to do my best to to pass on the opportunities because Hannibal is no joke. It's still the best drama on network television. Of course, that's not to suggest the show's without levity; Fuller infuses the horror with a sense of fun. I mean, he gives his episodes food related titles. Last season it was all French cuisine. This year, Japanese.

Anyone familiar the source material — be it Harris' "Red Dragon" (and subsequent novels) or the feature films — are likely to get an extra kick out of Fuller's winking nods and reversals. At the same time, everyone will appreciate a version so unique and compelling. The small screen adaptation always feels playful and it shines through in otherwise nightmarish scenarios. That's largely what the series is about: showing the audience what a nightmare it is to be Will Graham.

But as dark as his dreams become they are still beautifully photographed and full of rich characters constantly sparring with witty dialogue. The returning cast continues to shine in their respective roles with Mads Mikkelsen deserving special mention for continuing to make a role performed by four other actors feel so fresh — especially considering Anthony Hopkins won an Oscar for his portrayal. Having said that, Mikkelsen's Lecter is the best take on the cannibal yet, able to bring everything that his predecessors had as well as an imposing physical presence.

I don't want to diminish the wonderful work Hugh Dancy is doing as Graham, but he doesn't face as big of a challenge as Mikkelsen in making the tortured character his own. As a pair they are fantastic. The other members of the ensemble are also great in their roles, especially Laurence Fishburne as Jack Crawford and Gillian Anderson as Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier. However, since Hannibal is really about the relationship between the two leading men they deserve most of the praise.

And Bryan Fuller, of course. Everything ultimately boils down to his brilliant vision filled with luscious production design and beautifully macabre dreamscapes. The way the characters are drawn and how every case not only adds a horrific tale to tell each week (and boy, is the first one horrific) but deepens the relationship between Hannibal and Will, is impressive. They are so alike and yet so different. Each brilliant but both with their weaknesses. It's a thrilling dynamic and this is only the beginning of their chess match.

It's scary to think how close we potentially came to not having a second season of Hannibal. NBC could have easily not renewed the under-watched series, yet the show made it by on critical acclaim. It's a rare feat and something that shouldn't be taken for granted. I don't want this series to be another great that needs a 'save the show' campaign. Savour this show while it's on the air. And look, it's dinner time. Oh, right. The puns.

British television is making it across the pond in far more apparent ways than it used to. On Friday, The BBC announced it was picking up The Fall, a brand new crime series set in Northern Ireland, which follows a police officer investigating a string of murders. This is good news for anyone with Netflix, as well. Following The BBC’s release of the series in the UK on May 13, all five episodes of The Fall will be available on the streaming service beginning on May 28.

It’s awesome that the series inked out a Netflix deal. Murder mysteries translate well on both sides of the pond, and there should be enough familiar faces in The Fall to intrigue fans. The X-Files’ Gillian Anderson is signed on to star in the pilot, and according to Deadline, several other famous faces are also in the series, including Jamie Dornan, who played Sheriff Graham in Once Upon a Time, and Archie Panjabi, who plays Kalinda on CBS’ The Good Wife.

As evidenced by our “Ten 90s TV Stars We Want To See Back In A Starring Role On Television” column, Gillian Anderson still has a slew of fans stemming from her X-Files years. A lot of us would love to see her back in a leading role on TV, and she’ll get a shot with The Fall. Back in the States, Anderson is currently set for a recurring role on Hannibal and she’s signed on for a Rand Ravich pilot over at NBC, should it go to series. Unlike the Ravich pilot, the good news is, at least we know for sure that The Fall will air.

NBC’s untitled Rand Ravich pilot about a Secret Service agent who must deal with the kidnapping of the President’s son and several of his classmates, has signed on two pretty big cast members. The first is Rachael Taylor, who recently starred in ABC’s short-lived drama 666 Park Avenue. The second is nineties star and X-Files favorite, Gillian Anderson.

Cleary Taylor was going to land a pilot at some point, so let’s talk about Anderson’s casting, first. In NBC’s pilot Anderson is set to play Meg, a makeshift mother and a sister. Her sister’s busy life as a Secret Service agent has put Meg into the position to raise her sister’s daughter, Amber, a girl who later becomes a kidnapping victim. If the pilot moves to series, this could be a big role for Anderson, who has popped up in several TV series or miniseries’ in the past decade, but who hasn’t landed an iconic role since The X-Files, although she is set to recur on the upcoming Hannibal drama. Recently, TV Blend even voted her onto our list of biggest stars we want to see in a starring role on television. Apparently, we’re not alone.

Taylor has joined the series as Susie Dunn, Meg’s sister and Amber’s biological mother. According to Deadline, after the kidnapping Susie will be responsible for interviewing the friends and family members of the kidnapped children in the hopes that some details will pop.

The untitled pilot will actually follow a male lead who is new to the job, which means that casting is underway, but there are still slots to fill. We’ll let you know when the pilot finds its male lead, as well as a title.

With the premiere of Zero Hour airing on ABC tonight, ER star Anthony Edwards returns to a drama series in a starring role. It's the actor's first big TV role since ER, which prompted a bit of 90s nostalgia among some of us at TV Blend, after which, we had no trouble coming up with a list of beloved 90s TV stars that we'd love to see back on TV in a starring role.

We narrowed down our list with some basic criteria. Our ten picks are all actors who had a series regular role in a popular and successful 90s scripted TV show, and have not starred in a successful (more than one season) scripted, live-action TV show in the last ten years. So, while you may have seen (or heard) some of our picks on television in recent years, we're hoping to see them back as series regulars, either in a comedy or drama on television. We also tried to leave out actors that are on the rise in feature projects, like Michelle Williams or Joseph Gordon-Levitt, since the likelihood that they'll return to a starring role in television anytime soon probably isn't especially high, no matter how awesome it would be.

With the above in mind, here are ten 90s TV stars we'd love to see back on television in a starring role.

Jason Alexander

Even though, or perhaps because, they starred in one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, it has taken a lot of time for any of the Seinfeld cast to find purchase in their post show about nothing pursuits. Not for lack of trying. And Curb Your Enthusiasm doesn't count, no matter how funny they are were in various appearances. Michael Richards hit, uh, a more than a few bumps in the road as did Jason Alexander (very different bumps) and it took a few tries for Julia-Louis Dreyfus to findVeep, a truly great HBO comedy that allowed her to finally shake Elaine Benes.

Now, there probably is no return in sight for Richards but it's past time the former George Costanza found a series to showcase his comedic or dramatic skills. Since he's had such trouble getting a new sitcom off the ground in the years since Seinfeld, perhaps Alexander should choose a project that requires him to draw on his serious side, something like Kelsey Grammer's Boss. There must be a new cable show coming that could use a zombie survivor? Or a tough-talking cop or criminal in a period piece? Of course, It would be absolutely hilarious if he turned up as the as yet unseen president in Veep but looking for a true fresh start is probably the only way to go.

Neve Campbell

Neve Campbell was one of the best-known faces of the 90s, and she made a major entrance into our lives with her role on Party of Five. While some of of her castmates have continued on to successful starring roles on TV (notably Jennifer Love Hewitt and Matthew Fox), Neve Campbell fell off of the television map, and we want her back.

Campbell’s realistic portrayal of a teenage girl facing all the difficulties of being young while dealing with the death of her parents and the needs of her younger siblings won us over. She then threw off some of that good-girl image and made us see her differently in movies like Wild Things and The Craft. Since then she’s done a wide variety of film and guest roles including the recent mini-series Titanic: Blood and Steel, proving her acting ability and making us certain there’s a great adult role for her on TV today.

As an actress who made her biggest television impression as a teenager, Neve Campbell would be the perfect choice to take on a lead role as a mother in a drama now that she’s older. It would be almost the ideal full-circle television comeback – from the teenage orphan to a maternal role. She’d also do well in a thriller, perhaps something along the lines of American Horror Story, what with her horror flick background in the Scream films. Whatever she chooses, the time seems right for a Neve Campbell comeback on TV, and we are ready.

Chuck Norris

Chuck Norris has been the star of jokes and memes for the last decade, but he hasn’t been anywhere near the small screen. Which is a shame, because Chuck Norris wouldn’t be such a high profile name in pop culture without the small screen to back him and show the world his ability to kick-ass. The man may be 72 now, but let’s face it, he doesn’t look a day over 60, and he could definitely still headline a major television series, as long as it involved deadpanning one-liners and showing off unneeded martial arts moves.

Norris was the star of the beloved nineties series, Walker, Texas Ranger, which aired for eight seasons on CBS, ending its infamous run just a year after the turn of the century, in 2001. In the years since, the man has popped up in small roles in the movie realm, including an appearance in last year’s The Expendables. However, if he really wants to break back into the world of acting and do what he does best, we're sure a TV drama with an action bent would take him, but as we all know, Chuck doesn’t stumble into opportunities, he roundhouse kicks them into existence.

Gillian Anderson

The X-Files was one of the defining shows of the 90s, and its two stars are ingrained in the American consciousness as Mulder and Scully. But while David Duchovny has gone on to further television success with Californication, we’ve yet to see Gillian Anderson make a television comeback.

Gillian Anderson was masterful as the quietly brilliant, skeptical and yet ready to believe FBI agent who let Mulder be the off-the-wall, brave and yet vulnerable person he needed to be. Although Gillian has continued a steady albeit quiet career, she’s yet to take on another major American television role. Last year she starred in the BBC crime drama series The Fall, which had a five-episode straight to series order, but so far there’s been no second season announced and the series hasn’t made it to American audiences.

We would love to see Gillian return in a regular role on television, perhaps doing something that takes her outside of her well-known FBI agent character. Drama is easily her strong suit, and Dana Scully was both an FBI agent and a medical doctor, which makes her an obvious choice for either a procedural or a medical drama. But Gillian Anderson has done some great work in other areas as well, including the BBC’s Great Expectations mini-series - so a role in one of the period dramas that are growing in popularity would be one we’d love to see her take on. Either way, we would be happy to welcome Gillian Anderson back into our living rooms.

Seth Green

Seth Green played the role of the wolfish Oz for 40 episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the 90s, after which he went on to develop his career as a a voice actor, screenwriter and TV producer, with Adult Swim's Robot Chicken among his more notable and beloved creations. Amidst all that, he's done some acting, with a role in The Italian Job and voice-work in Family Guy among his credits. We even saw him reunite with Alyson Hannigan for a guest spot in How I Met Your Mother. Perhaps it was that recent appearance that had us craving more face-time for Green on television.

If not by taking a series regular role in a current show as he did when he joined Buffy, we'd love to see him starring in his own series. His sense of humor has been demonstrated time and again in film and television over the years, but we also know he knows how to handle drama. In fact, given the choice, we might prefer to see the Oz-like mildly funny side mixed with a more dramatic role for Green in a future series. But we'll take whatever we can get. And in the meantime, we have his voice and his humor to appreciate with Family Guy, Robot Chicken and his other projects.

Lacey Chabert

Like Seth Green, Lacey Chabert is another 90s star who does a lot of unseen but heard work in television, with voice-roles in Young Justice, Generator Rex and some early episodes of Family Guy (original Meg!). Unfortunately, we see less of the star on screen as we'd like. Her breakout role was that of Claudia Salinger on Party of Five. And she went on to show us her funny side in Not Another Teen Movie and steal scenes as Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls. With her distinctly sweet and girlish voice, it's no surprise that she would get plenty of voice work, but why haven't we seen her starring in her own TV series?

Chabert is beautiful and funny, which should make her a prime candidate to star in her own sitcom. Perhaps something in the tone of New Girl, except instead of quirky and doe-eyed, Chabert's "Jess" would have a mean-girl streak in her with big hair full of secrets and a toaster-strudel-inventing father. Ok, we're essentially suggesting a Gretchen Wieners sitcom here - complete with Tina Fey behind the production and other smart writers who know how to write a great female character - but even if it's not directly tied to Chabert's Mean Girls' character, a show about a funny woman with an edge and an attitude would suit Chabert nicely.

Jerry Seinfeld

It’s been almost fifteen years since Seinfeld went off the air, and during that stretch, a whole lot has changed about the sitcom business. Laugh tracks and live studio audiences are now frowned upon by comedy purists and thanks to cable, our collective idea of what’s edgy has moved quite a bit. Given all that, it might sound like it would be difficult for Jerry Seinfeld to update his shtick for modern viewers, but the truth of the matter is he would be just as appealing as ever. In a way, that’s always been the comedian’s greatest strength. Like Bill Cosby, Seinfeld was and is one of the few funny-men just as accepted by comedy elitists as by the general public.

His take on the minutia of life is inventive and original, yet easygoing and familiar. The phrase “all-appealing” is normally used to slander shows that are generic enough to be blandly acceptable, but in the case of a handful of programs over the past few decades, the term meant exactly what it seemed to promise. A very high percentage of people thought Seinfeld was funny, whether they were seventeen-year-old soccer players or seventy-year-old Jewish grandmothers.

Thanks to successful stand-up tours and crazy syndication paychecks, Seinfeld doesn’t need to work, but for the sake of comedy and NBC’s Thursday night schedule, we hope he does anyway.

John Goodman

Not that he's having any trouble finding feature film work or the occasional recurring character on television, but it would be great to see John Goodman return to the small screen for a permanent position. The former father from Roseanne, the 90s sitcom where he was stuck, uh, paired with Roseanne Barr for nine seasons, has been busy starring in critically acclaimed work since the blue collar comedy ended its long run at ABC a decade and a half ago, including stand-out turns in cult favorite Community and Ben Affleck's (Best Picture hopeful) Argo.

And while it would be a shame to stop seeing him pop up in so many great supporting performances, totally worth it to have Goodman star in the right small screen project. Although he has shown himself more than capable in any and all genres with his many diverse roles since Dan Conner, the actor is at his very best delivering quick witted and quirky dialogue of the Coen Brothers, making something like the upcoming FX adaptation of Fargo obviously perfect for his potential return. The dark but humorous world where people speak funny and do despicable things is a great setting for Goodman to showcase all his talent. If not there, the next Harmon series (or Aaron Sorkin) will do fine.

Jonathan Taylor Thomas

Unlike plenty of childhood stars who were able to reinvent themselves just around the time of adulthood, Jonathan Taylor Thomas never made the big transition from childhood actor to adult heartthrob. The big downfall occurred when young JTT quit his big series, Home Improvement to focus on schoolwork. By chance or design, Thomas has never had another big television role.

Though the 31-year-old did act after Home Improvement, he hasn’t popped up in eight years or so. When you did see him on the small screen it was probably in that one episode of Smallville where he simultaneously dated the show’s two leading ladies, or an early episode of Veronica Mars, where he played an undercover law enforcer. Despite falling off the acting ledge, with the right project, he could be on top of the TV game, once more. All he would need is a witty writer willing to harken back to the nineties and bring up points of nostalgia along with a little snark. That may seem pretty specific, but, hey, we all know it’s working for Tim Allen in Last Man Standing. Seriously, Kevin Abbott, are you thinking about casting a new lead? One who has charm, a nice smile, and plenty of experience practicing little lion growls? We know just the man...

Will Smith

Of course, Will Smith is still active in the film industry, as well as in his kids' budding careers, but is a stretch to hope that the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star might make a TV comeback at some point in the near future? In addition to his rapping career, Smith's early claim to fame was playing the easy going and perpetually cool character Will, who moves from West Philadelphia (born and raised!) to live with his rich relatives in California. He's since gone on to be an action star, dabbling a bit in drama. Coming soon, we'll see him and his son Jaden starring side-by-side in the M. Knight Shyamalan-directed sci-fii thriller After Earth.

Smith also has a bunch of sequels rumored to be in the works, so his availability for a TV commitment might not be a realistic option in the near future, but the timing does feel right for the star's return to the small screen. The obvious suggestion might be a Fresh Prince sequel, similar to what's happening with Boy Meets World, with Will playing the Dad (maybe a move back to Philadelphia with his Bel-Air raised kids?). But we could also see him starring in a Revolution-style adventure-drama or something with a bigger story, fitting to Smith's bigger name and the films we've seen him do in recent years. Either way, a return to the small screen to follow up Smith's successful movie career over the last two decades or so would be very exciting.

The X-Files aired for almost a decade, which isn't common for drama series these days. If NBC's Hannibal has similar longevity, perhaps it'll have Gillian Anderson to thank for it, at least a little bit, anyway. The former X-Files star is set for a multi-episode arc in Bryan Fuller's drama series.

In the works at NBC is Hannibal, a series developed by Fuller based on Thomas Harris' series of novels, focusing on Dr. Hannibal Lecter's relationship with FBI criminal profiler Will Graham in their earlier years, when Lecter was working as a forensic psychiatrist. Mads Mikkelsen plays Lecter, while Hugh Dancy plays Graham. Also among the cast are Laurence Fishburne, Gina Torres, Scott Thompson and Raul Esparza

Knowing what we do about Lecter's cannibalistic tastes, it's fair to say that when he gets inside somebody's head, it could very well be in the literal sense. The same probably wouldn't be said for the role Gillian Anderson is set up to play. EW reports that Anderson will appear in multiple episodes of Hannibal, playing Dr. Lecter's therapist.

They certainly went with a beautiful choice to play the role, and one that'll likely appeal to the many X-Files fans out there who loved her when she played the role of Scully in the Fox series. The X-Files wrapped up in 2002, and as Fuller mentions, this will be Gillian's return to network television after ten years. Anderson's appearance on the show is one more reason to look forward to it.

Sometimes there are celebrity rumors that seem so good they might just have to be fan fiction, and then sometimes there's a celebrity rumor that really has been fan fiction, and for decades. So we're not even sure how to process the rumor going around that Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny-- a.k.a. Scully and Mulder from the 90s sci-fi series The X-Files-- have started quietly living together, and "have been in a serious relationship for some time now." Yes, Mulder and Scully finally got together, and in real life. You may hold for applause.

The news surfaced at the relatively anonymous site Celebrity Dirty Laundry, so it's hard to know how much truth there is behind it-- it seems entirely possible the source is a major X-Files fan who wanted to see their dream come true. But Anderson and her boyfriend of six years, Mark Griffiths, recently announced they had split, and Duchovny and his wife Tea Leoni separated yet again last year, several years after they split when Duchovny went to rehab for sex addiction. So if Anderson and Duchovny ever are going to get together in real life, the timing is surely right.

Even if you never watched The X-Files back in the day, it was impossible to escape all the speculation about whether Mulder and Scully would ever get together, along with the hopes that Anderson and Duchovny would make it happen in real life. If you need a refresher on the fervent X-Files fan fiction that put the two of them together, here's a decent place to start. And again, none of this is official right now, and its entirely possible neither of them will ever confirm anything. But if Mulder and Scully are photographed out on the town together sometime soon, we will have reason to believe fan fiction has finally come true.
