In the last couple of decades, AMC has produced some of the best shows that have gone on to garner huge audiences, plenty of awards, and blasted careers off to new heights. From legendary hits like Breaking Bad or Mad Men, to shows that have become endured even longer, such as The Walking Dead.

Breaking Bad (2008-2013)

In Breaking Bad, Walter White is a normal man, teaching chemistry at his local high school, when he finds out that he’s been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Trying to find a way to somehow provide for his family before his time is up, Walter White teams up with an old student of his to do what he does best - use his chemistry skills - and creates crystal meth to make some cash.

There’s a reason why Breaking Bad has become probably one of the most known TV shows of this time so far. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul have amazing chemistry, along with the whole Breaking Bad cast. The story is one of the few on TV that really has no plot holes and you can follow perfectly, but still find something new on each re-watch of the show. The villains are fantastic - so much so that you might even find yourself rooting for them near the end.

Truly, it’s one of the best series out there - and if you haven’t found the time to watch yet, do it now. It didn’t get a spinoff show and a movie for nothing.

Better Call Saul (2015 - Present)

As the spinoff of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul tells the origin story of one of Breaking Bad’s most notable characters, Saul Goodman, and how he began his life as Jimmy McGill, a man who was trying to make it as a lawyer, and had to step down a dangerous path in order to be successful.

Without giving anything away for either show, the spinoff is actually quite good. A lot of the times when series have spinoffs, I feel like they never quite hit the mark like the original series they are based on. But, Better Call Saul does that and so much more. Not only does it add amazing storylines to already well-known characters like Saul and Mike, we get to see Saul’s interactions with different people, and how they affected him, like Kim Wexler or his brother, Chuck.

With Better Call Saul Season 6 coming out in 2022, now is the perfect time to binge.

Into The Badlands (2015-2019)

In Into the Badlands, viewers follow a warrior and a young boy, who are facing a dangerous journey across a feudal land, as they try to seek enlightenment while threats are thrown at them on a daily basis.

I always felt that Into the Badlands should have received more attention than it got. The sci-fi elements that they somehow infused into this high-energy martial arts series were always intriguing, and the plot was exciting and full of twists and turns that no one would expect. It seems like the perfect show for action / martial arts fans. If you haven’t given it a shot yet, there’s only three seasons, so maybe check it out next time you’re craving some martial arts action.

The Killing (2011 - 2014)

In this crime drama set in Seattle, The Killing follows a variety of murder investigations by homicide detectives Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder, exposing the secrets and conspiracies of different families.

If mystery shows are your thing, then this is definitely a great option for you. When I was binging The Killing, I felt like I was a detective, trying to figure out who was where, what happened when, and everything else, so I could solve the case alongside the two main characters. What makes it better is that these cases really aren’t just one-and-done's. They last several episodes, and go in depth with what happened, making sure that you aren’t left out of anything as secrets, conspiracies, and plenty of other surprises are revealed.

Mad Men (2007 - 2015)

In New York City, circa 1960, Don Draper is an executive at the fictional Sterling Cooper advertising agency. Mad Men is all about the craziness and drama that happens in the high-stakes advertising industry on Madison Avenue, hence the title as a play on the "mad" ad men of the time,

I know that the premise at first doesn’t sound like something that would be super interesting, but trust me when I say that Mad Men is another one of AMC’s best series that you should watch. Not only is it a great period drama, with set and costume design that is to die for, the Mad Men cast is full of talent. Jon Hamm as Don Draper is fantastic, Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson rocks her role, and everyone else is just as wonderful.

Hell On Wheels (2011 - 2016)

Hell on Wheels follows Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier who is traveling to Nebraska in the 1860s to seek vengeance for the death of his wife and son, caused by Union soldiers.

I mean, who doesn’t love a good revenge story? Not only is the tale of Cullen captivating, the rest of Hell on Wheels is actually really interesting, because it tells the story of the people who lived, worked and died on the Union Pacific Railroad, where the term, “Hell on wheels” comes from. While it’s still a fictional story, it’s an intriguing one with plenty of facts about the history of America, and will be great for anyone who loves period pieces, but lots of action as well.

Preacher (2016 - 2019)

In Preacher, we follow the story of Jesse Custer, a preacher who is a bit down on his luck, drinks hard, and chain-smokes. When he endures an issue with his own faith, he receives an extraordinary power, and goes on a guest to understand his new gift and literally find God - alongside an ex-girlfriend and a vampire, of course.

Preacher is so many things in one, I feel like literally anyone could find something to love about this show. If you like fantasy shows, Preacher has you covered. Supernatural more your thing? Preacher is that and so much more. Or, maybe you’re looking for a little bit of comedy - Preacher has that up the wazoo. Dominic Cooper is wonderful as Jesse, and the rest of the cast rule as well. I mean, Seth Rogen was an executive producer on this - you know it’s going to be funny but have its moments of craziness, too.

TURN: Washington’s Spies (2014 - 2017)

If you wanted another period piece but with some awesome spy action, look no further than TURN: Washington’s Spies. In this drama, taking place from 1776 to 1781, we follow a farmer from Setauket and his childhood friends, who end up forming a group of spies called “The Culper Ring.” This group of spies end up being the tide that turns the American Revolutionary War.

Believe it or not, this series is actually based on the real story of spies who aided America in becoming independent. If history if something that you crave, this show has so much of it that you’ll be shocked to learn some of America’s past. Keep in mind that this is still a TV show, so creative liberties were taken, but just the very idea that this is based on a real story will have you interested and wanting more. It’s so good.

Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021 - Present)

Kevin Can F**k Himself introduces viewers to Allison McRoberts, a young women who is struggling with her life amid an unhappy marriage to her husband, Kevin, who is an insensitive, unambitious man-child.

There are so many things about this series that I love. First, Annie Murphy is amazing. If you thought she was awesome while in the Schitt’s Creek cast, wait until you see her star in this. Secondly, the comedy in Kevin Can F**k Himself is top tier, but what makes this show so special is the different kind of camerawork it does. When Allison is with her husband, it’s the typical happy-go-lucky sitcom you would expect, with canned laughter and a multiple camera set-up. But, when she’s not around him, it’s like you’re watching a drama, focusing in on her life with a single camera and no laughter - just realness.

It really goes to show how much someone can fake for appearances, and how much they might be struggling on the inside. Seriously, there’s only one season so far, so now is the perfect time to watch.

The Walking Dead (2010 - Present)

As the last on this list, I can’t not mention The Walking Dead. In a world that has been overtaken by zombies, known as “walkers” in this universe, we follow a group of survivors from Atlanta (and, later, various other places) as they try to adapt and just survive somehow in a world that has gone to hell.

The Walking Dead has been on for ten seasons and is just now entering Season 11, its final one, with so many characters who have come and gone. I’ve stayed up with this show since the very beginning, but if you haven’t, I can’t tell you enough to watch it. The characters are intriguing, with so much personality, and the show has one of the best villains right now on television. The action is intense, the loving relationships realistic, the deaths heartbreaking, and so much more. For a zombie drama, The Walking Dead pulls no punches.

I can hardly believe there are so many options, but with this much good TV, you can’t help but binge it all, especially since a couple of these will be popping up on the 2021 fall TV schedule. Now, if you don’t mind me, I’m going to binge-watch Breaking Bad again for the millionth time.

Earlier this week, HBO premiered Season 3 of their expensive, much-discussed science-fiction/western series, Westworld. Created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, based on the 1973 movie of the same name directed by the late novelist Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park), the sci-fi/western series is often celebrated for its strong visuals and intriguing story turns, among other aspects. While not everyone was on-board with Season 2, the start of the third season suggests that the mature series is going to take some interesting new turns in the new episodes ahead. Whether or not that's the case, there are certainly a lot of TV viewers out there who love Westworld. And they're likely looking for another show like it. Don't worry, we can help. While the first season wasn't quite as well-regarded, many viewers were quick to praise Seasons 2 and 3 as extraordinary TV. If you enjoy Westworld for its thoughtful atmosphere, heady commentary, and resonate thematics, then you will definitely want to dig into The Leftovers.

Acclaimed for being a smart, thrilling, and imaginative program with gorgeous production values, compelling character arcs, and politically intriguing narratives, The Expanse should suitably satisfy anyone who finds themselves engrossed in the big ideas at the center of HBO's Westworld. Why Fans Of Westworld Would Like It: Ever since Game of Thrones became a massive worldwide success, HBO has strived to push for more mature genre shows, particularly those that lean into both fantasy and sci-fi. Indeed, viewers saw that with Westworld. They also saw it with Watchmen too. As soon as it premiered on the paid cable station, it was considered one of the best shows on television, as well as one of the best superheroes stories in an era that seems to be defined by them. Both audiences and critics alike celebrated Watchmen for its sharp writing, strong direction, and its masterful performances from its top-tier cast. Why Fans Of Westworld Would Like It: If you're a big fan of the western aspects of Westworld, notably in the first season, and you love how the HBO show explores gender politics, particularly in typically male-driven genres, then you'll find a lot to enjoy in this acclaimed Netflix seven-part mini-series.

The Son (Hulu)

Why Fans Of Westworld Would Like It: If you love Westworld's beautiful Western elements and find yourself itching for more shows that cater to that itch, you might want to check out The Son. While not exactly as critically acclaimed nor as well-viewed as some other shows found throughout this list, the Pierce Brosnan-led series is a quick and easy watch, particularly with only 20 episodes in total, and it should hopefully satisfy the desire you'll have.

Rick & Morty (Hulu)

What The Show Is About: Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon (Community), Rick & Morty is an animated sci-fi/dark comedy centered around an alcoholic, cynical mad scientist named Rick and his fretful, good-natured grandson, Morty, as they travel through several strange inter-dimensional adventures throughout the recesses of space, time, and alternate universes, while also spending time together in their domestic life. Basically, imagine if Back to the Future was cruder, louder, more rambunctious, and prone to random antics involving one's fleetingly thin threshold on control and sanity.

Why Fans Of Westworld Would Like It: If you like all the strange futuristic technology, mechanical wizardry, and other sci-fi elements found inside Westworld but you want a show that, well, has a better sense of humor about itself, then you'll probably enjoy yourself immensely with Rick & Morty.

Dollhouse (Hulu)

What The Show Is About: From creator Joss Whedon, Dollhouse revolves around a corporation running numerous underground establishments around the world known as Dollhouses wherein individuals known as Actives (i.e. Dolls) are given temporary personalities, identities and skill sets. It primarily centers around the character of Echo (Eliza Dushku), who is an active trying to forge a path towards self-awareness, away from her creators.

Why Fans Of Westworld Would Like It: Certainly, if you are compelled with the role of artificial intelligence inside Westworld and you are particularly enamored by the show's desire to show the uprising and self-actualization of its robotic characters, you'll find a lot to like in the short-lived Dollhouse.

The explosion of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is one of history's most infamous catastrophes, having been the focus of several realistic dramas, and even a highly fictionalized horror flick. Yet, no depiction of the tragedy has been as realistic or horrific as the 2019 HBO miniseries, Chernobyl.

Creator Craig Mazin’s Golden Globe-winning, five-episode event was watched by millions of viewers brave enough to witness the unsettling terror that brave Ukrainians had to endure in 1986 to safely evacuate Chernobyl following the explosion. The HBO series’ sharp writing and brutal authenticity was enough to get people interested in history again, something we do not give television enough credit for these days.

Band Of Brothers (Amazon Prime, HBO NOW)

Another one of the most acclaimed historical miniseries to air on HBO is this World War II era drama from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who had collaborated on the similarly harrowing war epic Saving Private Ryan. What separates Band of Brothers from that Oscar-winning drama is the inclusion of recorded interviews with the actual veterans who inspired the series.

Band of Brothers retells the experiences of Easy Company, the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, from basic training, to D-Day, and all the way to the end of the second World War. Starring recognizable faces like Donnie Wahlberg, Damian Lewis, and Michael Fassbender, this Golden Globe-winner for Best Miniseries in 2002 is a fascinating and often heartbreaking 10-episode story of extraordinary tasks that ordinary men were forced to do. Vikings (Hulu)

For years, The History Channel has been the premiere place on TV to watch nothing else but smart people recounting commenting on everything in history from the Renaissance to evidence that aliens built the pyramids. That was until the network introduced its first scripted series, Vikings, starring Warcraft actor Travis Fimmel as Ragnar Lothbok, a figure of Norse legend said to be one of the fiercest warriors of the 13th Century who seeks to explore, and conquer, distant places along with his Viking brethren.

From the creator of Showtime’s King Henry VIII-focused drama The Tudors, the Emmy-nominated Vikings is an action-packed period drama, currently in its sixth and final season, that creatively imagines the time when taking control over land was as simple as taking candy from a baby… whilst equipped with swords and shields. Hell On Wheels (Netflix)

In 2007, AMC really hit the ground running with their first original scripted series, Mad Men, which dramatizes the world of advertising in 1960s New York. For their next attempt at a period drama, they decided to go even further into the past, with a show focusing on the early years following the Civil War through the eyes of one angry former Confederate soldier.

Anson Mount (perhaps the most perfect name an actor cast in a western series could ever have) plays Cullen Bohannon, who, in order to find and punish the Union soldiers who murdered his wife, joins the development of the Transcontinental Railroad, hence Hell on Wheels. Musician/actor Common also stars as a freed slave working security on the railroad for four of this drama’s five seasons that may be fictional, but paint an accurate portrait of America’s uncivilized path to civilization. Narcos (Netflix)

Netflix sure does love its true crime, as another series on this list will provide further evidence to. In addition to countless documentaries about the most notorious criminals in history, the streaming service also brought Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar to Emmy-nominated glory with its original drama Narcos.

The three seasons of Narcos and its spin-off Narcos: Mexico, the second season of which drops February 13, follows real-life lawmen, such as DEA agent Javier Pena (The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal), and the drug kingpins they trailed throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s. It is a complex and thrilling account of why America’s war on drugs is such a fitting title. Stream it on Netflix here.

Deadwood (Amazon Prime, HBO NOW)

As Chernobyl, Band of Brothers, and a couple soon-to-be-mentioned series may prove, HBO has often gotten lucky with its historical accounts. One of its most acclaimed, and accurate, examples is this short-lived, Emmy-winning western Deadwood.

Set in the 1870s in the titular South Dakota town where crime and corruption run deep, the series dramatizes the clashing lives of actual people who lived in Deadwood, such as lawman Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) and saloon owner Al Swearengen (Ian McShane, who won a Golden Globe in 2005 for his devilish role). Deadwood’s three seasons and 2019 feature-length sequel are a grim reminder that the Old West was certainly no picnic. Stream it on Amazon Prime here or on HBO NOW here.

Mindhunter (Netflix)

At this point, Netflix is practically the ultimate hub to satisfy your true crime needs, from both an original scripted film and four-part documentary on Ted Bundy to the story of the infamously honest Henry Lee Lucas in The Confession Killer. Of course, you have to wonder if those investigative series would have existed if not for the game-changing FBI agents who inspired the acclaimed crime drama Mindhunter.

David Fincher serves as executive producer, and has directed several episodes, of this Emmy-nominated series that depicts the controversial development of criminal profiling in the 1970s by two pioneer FBI agents played by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany. After only two seasons, Mindhunter has been put on indefinite hold, but hopefully comes back soon as fans are dying to see what other historical psychopaths will join the likes of Charles Manson and Son of Sam as the show’s next interview subjects. TURN: Washington’s Spies (Netflix)

After the success of Mad Men and Hell on Wheels, AMC figured there was nowhere to go but even further backwards. This time, they optioned for a series centered on an especially pressing time in the history of the United States with an intriguing espionage twist.

British actor Jamie Bell leads the series as real-life American farmer Abraham Woodhull, who is recruited into Culper Ring, an organization under George Washington’s order tasked with spying on the British Army at the height of the Revolutionary War. Over the course of four seasons, TURN: Washington’s Spies reveals the untold story of how America’s first secret agents became instrumental to officializing the country’s independence. John Adams (Amazon Prime, HBO NOW)

Of course, we cannot forget the debt of gratitude that America owes to John Adams, a prominent historical figure devoted to truth and honesty, even if that meant defending British Troops in the Boston Massacre trial during a time of great conflict within the Colonies. HBO’s acclaimed miniseries chronicles the Founding Father’s career as an attorney, diplomat, and the country’s second president.

Emmys, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild awards were given to Paul Giamatti for his performance in the title role and Laura Linney as his wife, Abigail, in John Adams, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography by David McCullough. The seven-part 2008 television event is a beautifully acted and wonderfully told depiction of how John Adams had one of the most important roles in the history of the United States. The Crown (Netflix)

As for powerful dramas focusing on prominent historical figures in the United Kingdom, this Netflix original is one of its few docu-dramas that centers on a much less grim topic. The Crown chronicles the earlier days of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, during which the British Empire faces much political strife.

Both actresses to portray Elizabeth at different times in her life (Claire Foy for the first two seasons and Olivia Colman for the most recent third) have received Golden Globes for their performances, not to mention John Lithgow’s Emmy win for playing former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The Crown is an expertly researched and impeccably acted retelling of Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace’s histories behind closed doors. Stream it on Netflix here.

Boardwalk Empire (Amazon Prime, HBO NOW)

Creator Terence Winter took a few creative liberties with this series that depicts bootlegging operations in Atlantic City during the Prohibition Era. However, don’t worry. One of the biggest inaccuracies is some very loosely changed names.

Steve Buscemi gives a Golden Globe-winning performance as corrupt Atlantic City Politician Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, a fictionalized counterpart to Atlantic City politician Enoch “Nucky” Johnson who is known for conspiring with the likes of Al Capone and other mobsters to smuggle alcohol throughout its unlawful period. Martin Scorsese directed the pilot, as well as served as executive producer for all five seasons of Boardwalk Empire, a series that exposes how far people would go for a drink in the 1920s. Ripper Street (Netflix)

Film and TV audiences have a deep fascination with unsolved crimes, the fact that Jack the Ripper has been the subject of countless works of fiction being one prime example. However, what sets Victorian crime procedural Ripper Street apart from other TV series inspired by London’s most notorious murderer is that it takes place years after his reign had ended, but his ominous presence in the streets of London remained.

Ripper Street, which lasted five seasons on BBC from 2012-2016, follows the police district of Whitechapel as they struggle to maintain order in late 19th Century London in the aftermath of Jack the Ripper’s elusive killing spree. The series is a fascinating depiction of how the criminal justice system operated in the past, as well as an intriguing commentary on the distressing ripple effect of violence. Hell on Wheels was the place to be on the small screen for Western action for five seasons from 2011-2016, and many viewers were drawn into the twists and turns of railroad construction in the 19th century. Creators Tony and Joe Gayton proved that they have what it takes to craft engaging television with Hell on Wheels, and they're now working to bring a brand new project to the small screen, although it definitely won't be set in the Old West. The Gayton brothers are developing a prospective TV show based on The Dime.

The Dime is a book written by author Kathleen Kent that was published earlier this year, and a pair of TV veterans haven't wasted time in scooping the novel up for a TV adaptation. As the book was a bestseller, it makes sense that it would be selected as a possible great fit for the small screen. Adaptations of popular stories have done well lately, and the Gayton brothers could definitely have what it takes to create a hit out of Kathleen Kent's book.

The show would follow a Brooklyn cop by the name of Betty Rhyzyck, who is tough and capable and more than holds her own as a crime-fighter. She's also a lesbian, and she makes the decision to move from Brooklyn to Dallas with her girlfriend in order to take charge of a group of detectives. The cops in Dallas tend to veer toward traditional and conservative attitudes, and they're not especially welcoming to the lesbian detective from New York City. As law enforcement is a job that requires trust between co-workers, Betty and the cops on her team will have to find a way to work together despite their differences. They may discover that they have more similarities than they believed upon first meeting. Deadline reports that the project is in development for Fox.

Fox has given a script commitment plus penalty to The Dime, which means that Tony and Joe Gayton have decent odds of seeing this project making it to the small screen. The Hell on Wheels creators are on board as writers and executive producers. Director Matt Reeves of War for the Planet of the Apes will work as an executive producer as well. The Dime marks Reeves' second developing project at Fox, as he is also executive producing the vampire show featuring Mark-Paul Gosselaar.

The Dime sounds like a new take on the traditional crime drama, and it should be interesting to see who the Gayton brothers cast to play Betty Rhyzyck and the rest of the ensemble if the project lands a pilot and/or series order. There's no saying at this point when that might be, so take a gander at our fall TV guide and our Netflix premiere schedule for your current viewing options. As fall is approaching, we've started preparing to set our DVRs and cement our TV-watching schedules. However, while there are a slew of new and returning programs headed to TV this fall, we did have to say goodbye to a lot of lovely shows last season. From cable shows to network TV, there were a lot of shows with avid fanbases that still got the axe or---best case scenario---ended a lengthy run. If you are wondering whether or not your favorite show will return this fall, this is the list for you.

Castle

After eight seasons, Castle was getting a little long in the tooth. Still, for a while it seemed as if we would be getting Season 9 this fall, just minus a few of the key players that have been a part of the series over the years. Without Stana Katic, the show would have been pretty weird for fans, and apparently that coupled with continually lowering ratings convinced ABC to give the drama the boot. Luckily, Nathan Fillion has already landed his next TV gig and is heading to Modern Family this fall.

What We'll Miss Most: Castle's ability to get us to invest in Caskett, even when the drama was over-the-top.

Hell On Wheels

AMC's drama about the rise of the railroad in the United States had a pretty nice run on the cable network. While it was never a big ratings-bringer, fans really like the historical drama, which prominently featured some of the personalities on the Union Pacific Railroad and later, the Central Pacific Railroad. The series ended on a more optimistic note than normal this past July, but AMC had split the fifth and final season of Hell on Wheels, and the end unfortunately came with little fanfare.

What We'll Miss Most: Cullen Bohannon taking no shit.

Person Of Interest

Person of Interest was extremely innovative when it was released, mixing a crime thriller with technological components and including some incredible-looking special effects. Unfortunately, as the show continued its run, its audience dwindled somewhat. CBS gave it a half season order during last TV season, but then the show was kept off both of the fall and midseason schedules, forcing POI to air during the summer months. It's hard to gain traction during the summer, and it wasn't a huge shock when the network promptly cancelled the Bad Robot drama. Still, it will be missed by its avid fanbase.

What We'll Miss Most: The show's great cliffhangers. Seriously, even during that finale the door was left open for a spinoff.

Mike & Molly

Mike & Molly had major scheduling issues on CBS for more than one season. For a TV series starring a major a-lister, the show was shuffled around far more than expected and was used to fill space when CBS inevitably cancelled programming. This went on for a few seasons before the network ultimately opted to pull the plug on the comedy. Despite the ridiculous treatment Mike & Molly received, avid fans really stuck with the series and were devastated when the cancellation occurred. If you were hoping it was off of the premiere schedule because CBS had shuffled it again, we're sorry to inform you that it won't be back.

What We'll Miss Most: Having the pleasure of seeing Melissa McCarthy on TV---TV---every week! (Good thing she's appearing in the Gilmore Girls revival.)

Agent Carter

Marvel has had a pretty great track record with its TV programs. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is heading into Season 4, and Netflix has so many seasons of Marvel shows in development it's hard to keep track of all of them. However, one Marvel drama didn't fare so well on TV. Marvel's Agent Carter earned pretty good acclaim and decent ratings during its first season, but during Season 2, fans didn't really bite quite so hard. Unfortunately, ABC ultimately decided to pass on another season of the drama, despite plenty of fan petitions hoping for otherwise. Hopefully, Peggy Carter will still find a way to be around in some form.

What We'll Miss Most: Peggy Carter's one-liners.

Mythbusters

While Discovery has been a TV channel for a long time, it was really programs such as Deadliest Catch and Mythbusters that made Discovery more of a memorable content creator. Over a whopping 15 seasons, Mythbusters became an institution on the network, and a lot of people tuned in to watch Mythbusters' last hurrah. While the long-running series has now ended, there is good news. Old episodes of Mythbusters will still air on Science, and Science Channel is also looking to revive the format of the series with some new hosts. It won't be the same without Adam Savage or Jamie Hyneman, however.

What We'll Miss Most: The creative duo blowing things up, of course.

The Good Wife

CBS' critically acclaimed law-oriented drama was rumored to be ending before the network made the announcement, but the channel still did it in style. We found out The Good Wife was ending during a Super Bowl commercial, and the show wrapped up in May. If you missed it, the finale was certainly polarizing for fans, but it also capably wrapped up the series. Have no fear, however, a Good Wife spinoff is heading to CBS All Access, otherwise known as the network's streaming site.

What We'll Miss Most: Elsbeth, and if not Elsbeth, then Alicia always pounding back a glass of wine at the end of a long day.

Galavant

ABC's musical comedy Galavant was rather short-lived compared to some of the titles on this list. However, what the series lacked in longevity, it certainly made up for in uniqueness. The musical series was medieval but with a modern flare. Plus it sported lyrics written by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. Despite being quite popular on streaming services like Hulu, no more new episodes will be produced.

What We'll Miss Most: All the fun and sometimes kooky guest stars. (Remember Weird Al?)

The Soup

After 22 seasons on the air, E! finally said goodbye to The Soup, it's long running topical program featuring plenty of jokes. I don't know if The Soup ever really had the sort of die hard fans that tuned in every single night the show was on the air---maybe it did---but I do know that The Soup was a leftover from a different generation of television, and as such, its impact can still be felt on other networks and cable stations. We said goodbye to the series back in December, but it doesn't feel like it has been that long since the show graced our TV sets.

What We'll Miss Most: Joel McHale's snarky personality.

American Idol

The 2015-2016 TV season was really a year that said goodbye to a lot of long-running programs. Unfortunately, American Idol went out with more of a whimper than a bang, as its final season didn't show an increase in ratings, despite all of the hype Fox tried to put on the final set of episodes. Still, at one time American Idol was the most popular show on television, and it changed the way the entire country thought about reality TV. For that, it's greatness cannot be understated.

What We'll Miss Most: The show's heyday when Simon Cowell loved to tease Paula Abdul.

Gravity Falls

While Gravity Falls was never intended to be a long-running show, after two seasons the animated series had developed a big fanbase. Because of this, the cancellation of the series came as a bit of a shocker for those who followed the series. If you were expecting new episodes of the show to continue airing, here's what the creator has to say about ending the show.

What We'll Miss Most: The epic voice cast.

The League

The League was never one of the most popular series on cable, but what it lacked in popularity, it made up for in refreshing comedy. And what a great comedy it was. Featuring a slew of hilarious but completely selfish protagonists, The League was a great comedy pairing with It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and while it didn't outlive FX/FXX's flagship comedy, it will still be fondly remembered, even if that Stephen Rannazzisi drama mars the memory of the show a little bit.

What We'll Miss Most: Rafi, obviously.

10. Gracepoint

Fox’s limited series is based on Broadchurch, a British series that would no doubt have made this list if it had also appeared in 2014. As it stands, Gracepoint started with a similar tone and vision, but has capably expanded into its own brand of awesomeness, entrenching viewers into a small town community following the death of a young boy. The writing is good, but the show hinges on capable performances by actors including Michael Pena, who crushes it as lead Mark Solano, Nick Nolte, Jacki Weaver and more. Crime dramas don’t often leave lasting impressions, but Gracepoint has the goods.

9. Hell On Wheels

Railroad life intermixes with wild west antics in Hell On Wheels, a drama that follows life, law-keeping and one man’s restless wandering. In 2014, Hell on Wheels is well beyond the plotline following Cullen Bohannon avenging the deaths of his wife and child. Instead, Season 4 brought us stories related to outlaws and murder, religion and fortitude, and how chance and circumstance plays a huge part in shaping an individual’s future. It was a tough year for the cast of Hell on Wheels that ended on more than one somber note, and fleshed out the storytelling even further away from Bohannon’s hard-headed viewpoint. Hell on Wheels is one of the most interesting shows on television, even when it’s also among the loneliest to watch.

8. Outlander

TV doesn’t have enough epic romances, but Starz’s Outlander has provided plenty of people with an outlet to escape the often procedural-oriented TV landscape and delve into a story that mixes time travel with period dramas, and romance with violence and brutal antics. Outlander has only aired eight episodes thus far, but has made an impact on the pay cable landscape, thanks to Sam Heughan’s hunky Jamie Fraser and the pragmatic but open-minded Claire Randall, played by Caitriona Balfe. Sorry Tobias Menzies, but I’m rooting for the Scottish romance to pan out. Luckily, more episodes will be hitting homes in 2015.

7. The Americans

The Americans is one of cable’s quieter shows in terms of buzz, but what FX’s series lacks in viral awareness it makes up for in compelling TV. The spy drama, which follows a Russian couple assimilating into American culture to accomplish missions for the KGB, crushed its second season during 2014, introducing us to plotlines involving a secret computer program called Echo and following Elizabeth and Phillip as they investigated the deaths of another KGB secret agent couple. There are so many small details and quick-thinking spy moments in the series, but it’s the relationship at the center of The Americans that leaves us lingering on the series. It’s an intellectual drama, but an entertaining one, too.

6. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Now in Season 2, Brooklyn Nine-Nine isn’t exactly reinventing the comedy wheel. However, it goes boldly where a lot of comedies never bother to go: the cast is female-heavy and multi-racial, both concepts that help the humor to broaden beyond dick jokes (although obviously we are fans of dick jokes). It helps that Fox nailed the casting with this one, signing on the hilarious Chelsea Peretti alongside Stephanie Beatriz, Terry Crews, Joe Lo Truglio, Andre Braugher, Melissa Fumero and the loveably incompetent Andy Samberg. The workplace comedy does everything The Office did well and does some things even better.

5. Jane The Virgin

The CW’s newest drama is a telenovela. Its style and formatting gears it to a pretty specific audience, but despite being pigeonholed as a certain type of program, Jane The Virgin is anything but just an average telenovela. Gina Rodriguez is a strong, modern and independent woman living in present-day Miami who is accidentally artificially inseminated in Episode 1. Screwball basic plotline aside, Virgin’s strengths lie in its ability to mix poignant moments with wildly clever antics—a feat that hasn’t really been accomplished since Suburgatory went off the air last spring. It isn’t a comedy-drama that could possibly ever be in everyone’s wheelhouse, but Jane The Virgin is unlike anything else television has to offer.

4. Game Of Thrones

Season 4 of Game of Thrones offered some great shock value and even more exploration of the history of the realm. Mostly following the events in the latter half of the third book written by George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones was neither short on gruesome deaths nor court intrigue during 2014. What makes the HBO drama stand out from the pack is not just its careful writing and directing, which hops perspectives and chooses to focus on specific moments on one giant kingdom’s history. Instead, it's the fact that it is able to take a vast fantasy and compact it into 10 episodes that are riveting. This sort of violent and morally egregious fantasy may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it would be hard to argue that Game of Thrones doesn’t offer compelling, quality storytelling—with dragons, to boot.

3. Silicon Valley

Dick jokes and tech jokes aren’t up everyone’s alley, but thanks to the careful caress of Mike Judge, HBO’s Silicon Valley manages to be both crass and extraordinarily heady—often in the same moments. The comedy series follows a group of young men trying to get a start-up off the ground, facing numerous farcical difficulties along the way. And while it’s a little too light on the ladies, it still manages to keep its male and female audiences in stitches each week. I’d rather be in stitches than trapped on an automated island due to GPS problems with an automated car.

2. Justified

In theory, Justified should be a procedural, a set of one-off episodes in which a bad guy is taken down by a rogue cowboy law officer each and every week. While the bad guys get down and lead Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) often gets in a fitting quip during the process, FX’s Justified has evolved from a basic procedural into a show that immerses itself in Kentucky’s folklore. In doing so, it has created one of the great TV rivalries of my lifetime. It will be a sad day, indeed when Boyd and Raylan will no longer verbally spar on TV.

1. The Good Wife

It’s hard to see how any show on television is even competing with The Good Wife right now. This year was a landmark one for the CBS series, filled with elections, start-up firms, infidelity, cranky judges and one horrifying courtroom shooting. It was the latter that really kicked The Good Wife into gear in the first part of 2014, but the show really hasn’t shown signs of stopping after losing lead Josh Charles. Alicia is, in fact, running for State’s Attorney, adding plenty of new cogs to the lawyer drama. With standout performances from Matt Czuchry and Archie Panjabi, not to mention recurring stars Mike Colter and David Hyde Pierce, The Good Wife continues to avoid any missteps, even when it tries stories that are a little bit wacky. Who can’t love a show that gives us an entire episode based on the perspective of Elsbeth Tascioni?

Honorable Mentions: Fargo, Boardwalk Empire, Gotham, Over The Garden Wall.

Hell on Wheels has often been a thoughtful show, but one week into Season 4, its undertones are a little more family-oriented. We’ve seen what lead Cullen Bohannon has been willing to do to avenge the violence enacted against his own clan, but we haven’t really seen him take on the role of father, advisor and protector before. In this exclusive clip from tomorrow’s episode, courtesy of AMC, we see a more tender side to the railroad leader.

In the clip, Cullen is planning his escape from the Morman compound that has housed himself, his new wife and his even newer baby. The three of them seem to be safe within the high walls of the establishment, but if you’ve been keeping tabs on the Hell on Wheels cast, you may already know that Cullen’s nemesis the Swede has created an elaborate ruse to run the compound. Due to his power, the commune has held Cullen captive while he fulfills his debts. Yet, he’s still itching to get back to the railroad, where he has power and a much more exciting life.

What’s been most surprising about Cullen’s transition into compound life is his willingness to put two people he barely knows ahead of his own needs and wants. He willingly married Naomi to save her from shame and ruin, and because it was the best play he could possibly make given the circumstances. He’s done his best not to rock the boat with anyone in the community, excepting the Swede. He likely could have escaped from the commune during the long months he spent there, but in the clip he seems hellbent on bringing Naomi and the baby with him, even holding his baby more tenderly than I would have thought possible as he explains his plan. She, on the other hand, isn’t quite as certain, questioning whether or not they ought to go, but willing to trust whatever decision her husband decides to make. Cullen’s not a particular feeling individual, but he is a duty bound one, and he and Naomi’s symbiotic relationship works, even though he’d likely prefer a more fiery lady and she’d rather like a more religious one.

Hell on Wheels is often about gun-toting violence, peppered with range wars and railroad building. However, Season 4’s Morman commune plotline has allowed us to take a step back and look at yet another aspect of life in the early West. While the Swede’s antics have begun to try my patience, it’s still striking that Hell on Wheels manages to be so richly layered. If you’re not already watching, Season 4 only recently started, and now is as good a time as any to start tuning in.

AMC’s Hell on Wheels has developed enough of a fanbase that it nabbed a Season 4 renewal, and if you haven’t been keeping up with the network’s historical drama, the latest installment is actually hitting the schedule tomorrow night. The railroad-based series was renewed last November, and this time around, the network is giving the series an increased episode order of 13 full episodes, guaranteeing the writers, producers and actors more freedom to play, work and survive in one of the toughest places on Earth. With Season 3 ending on several abrupt cliffhangers, there are a ton of plotlines to resolve in the very immediate future.

AMC’s historical drama Hell on Wheels began as a character-driven period piece following Cullen Bohanan’s move out west as part of a railroad crew with the intention of finding and eliminating the Union soldiers responsible for murdering his family. Joe and Tony Gayton’s series quickly became as much about the trials and tribulations of building a railroad as it became about a personal vendetta. Season 3 offered a look at many of the hazards and troubling aspects of life in the wild, ending with one possibly dead lead and another stuck in a creepy Mormon commune. With a cholera outbreak also taking precedence during the latter half of the season, the real question leading into Season 4 is when Hell on Wheels plans to actually get back to the rails.

It doesn’t look like it will happen immediately. While the building of the railroad has gotten back on track, a new video from AMC shows the makeshift tent town will settle down at Cheyenne and will develop a few more feelings of permanence during the new season. Take a look behind the scenes and learn a little about the future below...

It seems as if the city of Cheyenne will become almost a character this season. In addition to the hotel we saw last year, the bustling metropolis will now boast a casino, a bar, a railroad office, a bank, a freight depot, a train station and more. That will definitely change the pacing of the show and probably even the overall feel, but going into Season 4, that’s probably a good idea. Hell On Wheels is a great show, but watching people built a railroad is only so interesting. It’s time for change. It looks like we’re going to get it.

In a somewhat surprising move, AMC has renewed Turn this week. The Revolutionary War drama has a killer premise and an excellent cast, but it failed to gain a ton of traction during its first season at the cable network. Still, it looks like AMC saw enough promise in Turn to sign on for a second season of the drama, which stars Jamie Bell, Heather Lind and Kevin McNally.

The news broke on Twitter, although AMC later released some details about the show’s upcoming season. According to the cable network, Turn will return for Season 2 in 2015. AMC is currently eyeing a spring premiere date, and, similar to Season 1, 10 episodes of the hit series will be produced. But first, here’s the tweet heard around the world.

Earlier we noted that Turn’s renewal is somewhat surprising. The show’s premiere only garnered 2 million totally viewers, and later in the season, some episodes barely nabbed over a million total viewers during first run. Regardless, it’s not as if AMC is being completely foolish by renewing Turn. The show managed a steady audience during its Season 1 run, and by the time the finale premiered, the show was steadily increasing in the ratings, with the initial airing of the finale bringing in 1.6 million total viewers. As AMC is noting, when counting live+3 ratings, the show was averaging 2 million total viewers. While at first the numbers look a little more akin to something like Low Winter Sun than The Walking Dead, it actually seems as if Turn has built itself a nice little niche fanbase—numbers which seem to be growing rather than falling.

To support the Season 2 renewal, AMC is also marketing Turn through the summer. New episodes of Hell on Wheels begin airing on August 2 at 9 p.m. ET and AMC will air encore performances of each of the Turn episodes after Hell on Wheels on Saturday nights. It could prove to be a pretty marketable strategy. Hell on Wheels is also a period drama, and the August-based schedule could draw in viewers who didn’t have time to catch a new series in the spring.

It will likely be a few months before we hear any new news related to Turn, but we will let you know as soon as AMC cements a few more details.

Jamie Bell and Seth Tumrich are looking ready for a revolution in the above promotional photo for AMC’s promising looking upcoming spy thriller Turn. And that’s just one of numerous tidbits the cable channel shared in anticipation of their 2014 programming slate. AMC also announced a number of release dates — or release timeframes — for their new and returning shows, including the return of Mad Men, and the premiere of their Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul.

Let’s go back to Turn for a second. In addition to releasing the above photo, AMC also shared a new trailer and it may be the most exciting one yet:

Moving back up the schedule, we have the return of The Walking Dead and the post-ep talk show Talking Dead lined up for early next month. Later in February, there’s the unscripted series Game of Arms, the reality series about arm wrestling you’ve been waiting for… probably since Sylvester Stallone went Over the Top.

In April, we have Turn to look forward to. Hopefully that’ll prove to be as great as it looks. Later that month, Mad Men will return with the first half of its seventh and final season will air. We’ll get seven episodes on 2014 and then — just as Breaking Bad was cut in half for its last season — the remaining seven episodes will air in 2015.

Speaking of Breaking Bad being split in half, Variety reports that the final eight episodes of Breaking Bad will become available on Netflix on February 24. As for Better Call Saul, AMC’s set the series’ arrival for November.

Also set for an unspecified date is Halt and Catch Fire, which AMC plans to get on the air in June. The series is said to capture “the rise of the PC era in the early 1980s, during which an unlikely trio – a visionary, an engineer and a prodigy – take staggering personal and professional risks in the race to build a computer that will change the world.” AMC will announce the official premiere date for that one and the return date for Hell on Wheels at a later time.

The summer TV season has begun, as most of the Midseason series have wrapped up and we're starting to see the networks roll out their summer offerings. Once upon a time, summer was the down season for TV, but in this day and age, cable and network television offer a nice variety of scripted and unscripted programming to fill the gap between spring and fall. This year, that includes the return of Falling Skies, Burn Notice and Drop Dead Diva, as well as the premieres of new series like Under the Dome, Devious Maids and The Hero.

AMC’s western Hell on Wheels had a little trouble getting back on its feet after losing its co-creators and showrunner John Shiban at the end of Season 2. The network still liked the program enough to find people to fill the gaps and bring the series back for Season 3, however. The series is set to return this summer, and it will do so on Saturdays beginning on August 3.

While a Saturday timeslot may be a death sentence for a program on network television, that tenet doesn’t necessarily hold true for cable. BBC American has found quite the successful niche with its Supernatural Saturday programming and, at AMC, moving Hell on Wheels to Saturdays will actually open up a third night of programming for the network. According to THR, AMC will also continue to run classic westerns on Saturdays in order to lead-in to its original program. In fact, AMC President Charlie Collier calls the show’s move a “dream.”

Season 2 of Hell on Wheels did fairly well on the network, averaging over 2 million viewers an episode during its second season run on Sunday nights. Granted, a move to Saturdays may mean losing a little bit of that audience, but if Hell on Wheels can still do decently in a Saturday night slot during the summer, it will be a feat for the program and a big boon for a cable station that will be offering plenty of TV fodder this summer, including Low Winter Sun, The Killing, and the final episodes of Breaking Bad.

Season 3 of Hell on Wheels will premiere Saturday, August 3 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.

Some big changes need to go down on the set of AMC’s Hell on Wheels before fans will see new episodes of Season 3 on the network. Showrunner John Shiban has resigned from his position on the western drama with the railroad bent. The news comes only a short time after co-creators Joe and Tony Gayton have dropped to a consulting role in the series. Due to Shiban’s decision, AMC has opted to put Hell on Wheels on hold until further notice.

Shiban announced he has stepped down from the program, and later issued a statement concerning his decision. EW reported the statement, which notes Shiban’s official departure, but also mentions the man’s willingness to help with the transition to a new showrunner.

Unfortunately, the show doesn’t have a back-up showrunner just hanging around, and will be forced to spend some time searching for one before it can get back on track. The good news is that AMC seems confident the production companies, Endemol and Entertainment One, will be able to find a new showrunner. Which means Season 3 should still be happening at some point—it should only be a matter of “when.”

The whole thing is a little bit of a surprise, considering Hell on Wheels was only renewed on Monday, but I’m sure Shiban has his reasons for leaving so soon after the show has earned a 10-episode third season. TV Blend will keep you posted when a new showrunner is found.

Netflix Pick: Hell on Wheels: Season 1

AMC has had no shortage of notoriety over the past few years. The breakout popularity of shows such as Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead have made AMC an unquestionable source of must-see TV. Sure, there have been missteps (*coughcoughTheKillingcough*), but the quality of the shows that work more than makes up for it. One show that's flown a bit below the radar is Hell on Wheels, AMC's take on the Western drama. Now the entire first season is available on Netflix Instant Watch, and it's definitely worth sampling if you like the genre.

At the core of Hell on Wheels is former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), a man on a mission to find the killers of his wife. His path leads him to the traveling encampment that follows the construction of the first transcontinental railroad. Bohannon takes a job as a railroad foreman, working for Thomas Durant, a less than scrupulous investor in the railroad. Bohannon continues searching for clues about his wife's killers, but also finds himself growing more embroiled in the daily life of the workers, prostitutes, and drifters who make up the camp. With the first season comprising a mere 10 episodes, you've got plenty of time to zip through it before the season two premieres on August 12th.

Amazon Prime Pick: Fringe

Fringe has become one of the most pleasant surprises of the last five years or so of television. When I watched the pilot back in 2008, I wasn't impressed. I liked the trippy fringe-science setup, but Anna Torv didn't seem like she had the chops to support a show. And what the hell was the guy from Dawson's Creek doing? Were we supposed to take him seriously? Screw you, dude, I sat through The Skulls! But then a funny thing happened. I kept coming back. I probably just assumed it would be another one-season casualty of Fox's ever-sweeping Scythe of Cancelation. But little by little, I watched the show find its footing. I watched it improve on every front. And hey, Pacey actually wasn't a bad actor!

If you're a science fiction junkie and have never given the show a chance, check it out via Amazon. The mad science concepts are alternately mind-boggling and stomach-churning, but what really anchors this show is the three-way relationship between Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv, who eventually settled into the role nicely), Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson), and Peter's brilliant but troubled father, Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble). The relationship between Peter and Walter will absolutely break your heart sometimes, and Noble should by all rights have a shelf full of Emmys from the role. Fringe also eventually begins unveiling a complex, and completely gripping, larger mythology, one which will come to a head in the show's final season, set to premiere September 28th on Fox.

Hulu Plus Pick: A Day in the Life

Netflix has been getting all the headlines when it comes to greenlighting original content, with shows in the works from big names such as David Fincher/Kevin Spacey, Weeds creator Jenji Kohan, and horror director Eli Roth. But while they haven't made as big a splash as Netflix has, Hulu has also been dipping a toe into the world of original content, including this rather cool documentary series from Morgan "Super Size Me" Spurlock. With two seasons currently available, A Day in the Life explores the lives of "today's leading figures -- celebrities, musicians, comedians, dancers, entrepreneurs."

As you'd expect from the title, each episode focuses on one day in the lives of people such as billionaire Richard Branson, musician will.i.am, and even Community/Talk Soup's Joel McHale. Anyone familiar with Spurlock's previous work will find a somewhat different template here. The filmmaker is involved in front of the camera as well as behind it, whether subjecting himself to bizarre experiments or simply serving as a narrator or host. In A Day in the Life, however, his on-camera involvement is much more limited, and the focus is much more on the famous personalities being profiled. I like that Spurlock has cast his net wide in choosing subjects. Most of these people are not necessarily the first names to spring to mind for a series like this…and that's a good thing.

In less than a week, AMC will premiere their new series Hell on Wheels. We have a clip from the premiere episode, which does a nice job of illustrating the times the characters were living in.

Hell on Wheels is a drama/western that takes place just after the Civil War in America. The series focuses on Anson Mount’s character, a former confederate soldier, who’s on a mission for revenge against the Union soldier who killed his wife. He ends up heading west and getting involved with the people working on construction of the first transcontinental railroad.

The above clip shows off one of the things I’m most interested to see in this series. In terms of the setting for the show, the Civil war is over and Emancipation Proclamation is in effect, allowing many slaves to leave their owners and pursue their own futures as free men and women. That’s obviously a lot easier said than done, however, and it should be interesting to see how the African American characters in this series are portrayed and how their own attempts to find work and a life for themselves fits in to the over-all story.

Hell on Wheels premieres on Sunday, November 6th at 10/9c on AMC.
