As a ‘90s kid who lives and breathed Disney Channel Original Movies (aka DCOMs), something really ignited in me when Disney+ decided to launch its streaming service in 2019 with the premiere of a series inspired by High School Musical. Despite its awkward title, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, the show was a really fun and nostalgic ride to go on across these last four years. It helped give rise to one of the biggest new pop stars, Olivia Rodrigo, and a ton of other talented folks I expect to see continue rising in popularity. Now that HSMTMTS has concluded with its fourth and final season, it got me looking at a library of beloved DCOMs Disney+ should reboot next. 

From the ‘80s to today, there've been over 100 Disney Channel Original movies, but the ‘90s and ‘00s were a really key time for me and so many kids in my generation. I think so many of these movies are just waiting to be rebooted for those with a Disney+ subscription, and honestly, I’m surprised the streaming service has yet to look to them for their original content. 

Smart House

Ok, so 1999’s Smart House was ahead of its time. It finds a fun and family friendly way to explore the story of a fully-automated dream house that gets out of control. It’s basically a lost Black Mirror episode for the kiddies. Katey Sagal was incredible as Pat, the Stepford Wife-type piece of technology that inserts herself to become the family’s mother. I think it would be so interesting if a Smart House sequel were to be produced, perhaps with one of the kids rebooting Pat as an adult by accident. I’d love to see how Pat interacts with the plethora of tech we have now. 

Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century 

Two words: Zetus Lapetus! Another 1999 DCOM that I had on repeat as a kid was Zenon Girl of the 21st Century. It was a cute family adventure about a girl who lives on a space station in the future that gave off some major Y2K vibes! For this property, Disney+ should reboot Zenon into a kids series that takes place on the space station and features some of the movie's cool gadgets in an updated way. I could see it becoming somewhat of a Star Trek-inspired series for the young ones on Disney+, with some of their parents able to connect with the nostalgia of the Zenon-verse.  

Halloweentown 

Haven’t you heard, Halloween is cool! Over the years, the Halloweentown movies have become a tradition in numerous households during the spooky season. With it being nearly 20 years since the last Halloweentown movie was made, I pitch Disney+ makes a series about the ongoing events of the town that always premieres in October. It would also be fab if Debbie Reynolds’ granddaughter, Billie Lourd, stars after Reynolds memorably starred as Splendora Agatha “Aggie” Cromwell in all four movies. It could even be a prequel about Aggie’s upbringing as a witch. 

Brink! 

1998’s Brink! Inspired a generation of kids to get into rollerblading, so wouldn’t it be fun for that to return? Rollerblading is already reportedly having a comeback, per The New York Times, making it a good time for the property to be rebooted with a new generation of soul skaters. For real though, I rewatched this DCOM within the past year and really found it to be endearing and fun. Imagine if Disney+ did a casting call for really talented skaters too and audiences could see their sick moves alongside another plotline about the commercial skating world.

Get A Clue

Another fun, but perhaps underrated DCOM favorite is 2002’s Get A Clue. The movie featured four high schoolers who investigate their missing teacher with style. It starred Lindsay Lohan and Brenda Song as besties and is memorable for all its cutting-edge fashion moments alongside a fun mystery. Of course I’d love to see Lohan’s movie comeback continue with a Disney+ sequel for Get A Clue, but if not, I think I’d be a fun title to reboot as a mystery series starring four new high schoolers. 

Cadet Kelly 

While Hilary Duff was Lizzie McGuire on Disney Channel, she also starred in the 2002 movie Cadet Kelly, about a fashionable teen who is forced to move to military school. It was a fun and heartwarming comedy co-starring Kim Possible and Even Stevens actress Christy Carlson Romano. Over the years, its queer subtext between the relationship between Kelly and Captain Jennifer Stone has been more widely discussed, even among Duff and Romano. Either way, it was a fun premise to set a family movie in a military school, and this flick also seems like a movie that could be rebooted for Disney+ as a coming-of-age series. 

Camp Rock

Come on, Disney+, Camp Rock is literally right there and it’s not getting a reboot yet? The 2008 movie, of course, was a huge platform for the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato, and it would be a blast if Disney found a new way to explore the franchise. I don’t imagine the JoBros or Lovato are eager to get back on the Disney Channel train after making their own (and very successful names) in the music industry and beyond, but isn’t it about time a new generation revitalized the name Camp Rock? It could be a great opportunity for burgeoning rock bands of today to be highlighted too.  

The Cheetah Girls

Lastly, there’s The Cheetah Girls! The 2003 movie was such a fun early ‘00s romp that really took young girls like me by storm. It felt like we were always referencing the Disney Channel movie and deciding which of the girl group we were. 20 years later, I feel it would be a huge Disney+ event if the original cast came together for a reunion movie. 

HSMTMTS may be over, and without a big reunion for its original cast. Still, as a ‘90s kid, I still had a fun time with the nostalgia trip of a series overall (I especially liked Ashlyn and Maddox’s sweet romance in Season 4) and am all in on Disney+ taking advantage of bringing back more of these DCOMs in new ways. There are tons of possibilities for the platform to keep rebooting DCOMs and I hope they do while incorporating some clever new ideas. 

Feeling a wave of emotions, I find myself reminiscing about the days of watching the High School Musical movies during my upbringing. The memories of being in a theater watching tons of screaming fans whenever Zac Efron would step on the screen are stuck in my mind. It’s a sweet memory from my childhood. 

When Disney+ announced the development of a spinoff series named High School Musical: The Musical: The Series starring Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett and more, my skepticism towards spinoffs led me to believe it might not be the best decision ever. However, curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to give it a chance. To my surprise, I was thoroughly entertained and, unironically, deeply moved by the stories of the teenagers attending the school where the original movies were shot.

Now, the series has come to an end after its fourth season. In this time, the show has produced numerous covers, not only from the High School Musical series, but also from other Disney franchises and pop stars. Today, I embark on the task of ranking the most exceptional High School Musical: The Musical: The Series song covers from its four seasons, and the special holiday episode.

10. "A Night To Remember" (Cast, Season 4)

This rendition of "A Night to Remember" takes the last spot purely due to the multitude of songs on this list. However, the Season 4, Episode 7 performance stuck with me. 

Drawing parallels to a similar scene in High School Musical: Senior Year, the collaborative performance is full of fun and makes you want to dance. What sets it apart is the authentic portrayal of high schoolers and their pre-prom jitters; arguably in a more relatable way than the original High School Musical cast, who never really felt like teenagers. 

9. "The Climb" (Seb, Season 2)

Seb's rendition of 'The Climb' in Season 2, Episode 5 was a commendable feat. Originally sung by Miley Cyrus for Hannah Montana: The Movie, the emotional perspective Seb injects into the song resonated with me. Beyond Joe Serafini's impressive vocals, the portrayal of friendship and love made this stand out. You can clearly see just how much Carlos is loved while this song is performed. 

8. "Belle" (Cast, Season 2)

Audition scenes always offer a showcase of vocal prowess, and "Belle" is no exception. Episode 2 of Season 2 sees the cast auditioning for Beauty and the Beast, a choice that highlights the actors' unique voices. 

Notably, this performance marked the moment I realized Ashlyn's vocal prowess, which made her the absolute best pick for the main role as Belle. I ended up loving her even more as the series went on – especially her romance with Maddox. 

7. "Love Is An Open Door" (E.J. And Gina, Season 3)

"Love Is An Open Door," a gem from Frozen's soundtrack, gains a fresh rendition by E.J. and Gina in Season 4, Episode 4. The song is already a great Disney villain song from the movie (sung by Kristen Bell and Santino Fontana), but I loved this rendition almost more. 

Despite the short-lived nature of Gina and E.J.’s relationship due to evolving emotions, their performance embodies genuine joy. The portrayal feels more about mutual happiness rather than ulterior motives like the original, with Gina's voice being an absolute highlight. 

6. "River" (Nini, Holiday Special)

The holiday special is home to Olivia Rodrigo's stellar performance of "River,” featuring her singing on the series before she became the huge star that she is now. 

While originally sung by Joni Mitchell, Rodrigo's unique interpretation showcased her remarkable talents. Her departure in Season 3 was regrettable, but her legacy lives on through her emotional performances and the new songs she’s releasing now.  

5. "We're All In This Together" (Cast, Season 1)

The original "We're All In This Together" from the first High School Musical movie remains iconic. While I've memorized the cast's final scene, the Season 1 finale pays homage to the classic with excellent teenage spirit. 

The energetic performance and outfits capture the essence of the original while adding a touch of contemporary flair, and, of course, there’s nothing quite like seeing a bunch of friends get down to this Disney classic. 

4. "I Want It All" (Courtney, Carlos, Dani, Season 4)

"I Want It All" embodies the spirit of Sharpay and Ryan, two of the series' standout characters. Heck, Sharpay, in my mind, is the heroine of the story. 

The Season 4, Episode 7 rendition by Carlos, Courtney, and Dani captures their sassiness and flair. Their performance remains one of the series' best, effectively conveying the essence of the original while infusing their unique personalities. It’s a shame that I had to wait four whole seasons to see it. 

3. "Breaking Free" (Nini And Ricky, Season 1)

Claiming the third spot is the soaring rendition of "Breaking Free" by Nini and Ricky in the Season 1 finale. 

Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron's original version carries a weighty drama, but the series' cover emphasizes the fun and carefree spirit of a school musical. It reflects the joy of performing with loved ones and just having fun performing on the stage. 

2. "Fabulous" (Carlos, Cast, Season 3)

"Fabulous" is a declaration of self-assuredness, and Carlos takes the stage to deliver this sentiment in Season 3, Episode 4. The character's embodiment of the original by Sharpay, combined with the cast's energetic performance, showcases Carlos's vibrant attitude. 

The cover pays tribute to the original, with every bit of pink that you could imagine, while also adding in that signature flair the show has been offering this whole time. And, to be honest, I would watch Carlos perform this a ton, just like I would watch Ashley Tisdale perform it again. 

1. "Right Here, Right Now" (Ricky And Gina, Season 4)

Number one on this list has to be "Right Here, Right Now" in Season 4 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, as part of the finale. There's not another cover on this list that could top that in my mind. 

Are there other scenes that are flashier? Yes, completely. But, I love Sofia Wylie and Joshua Basset's performances in this scene. It's way too short for my liking. I always loved the original song, sung by Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron in Senior Year, but these two have such beautiful voices that meld together perfectly. And, the added tension makes it that much better. 

I seriously wish this was longer than it was, because these two have grown so much in their vocal talent over the last few seasons. I suppose I can settle for the shorter version, though. 

While High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is done, there's no denying the impact it left on franchise fans. Now, there are plenty of new stars because of it that you can check out in their next roles. We'll have to keep an eye out for these talented singers.

When it comes to beloved Disney Channel properties, High School Musical is arguably the crowned jewel. The trilogy of musical films not only major boosted the acting careers of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, they also had record-breaking premiere numbers on TV and remain popular source material for stage musicals. It’s a modern classic, so when news of a reunion of the original stars was revealed for the fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, fans of the original movies, like me, have been curious about whether it would stick the landing with this reunion. Now that the season has dropped, let’s talk about what went down for the Wildcats of the early ‘00s.

Ahead of the season dropping on Disney+, CinemaBlend spoke to the series’ creator, Tim Federle, and he hinted at the reunion of the original cast members being “more of grace note” rather than the focus on the final season as it seeks to wrap up the current Wildcats’ journeys putting on a stage production of High School Musical 3 amidst their upcoming graduations. Even so, there are some mentions and participation from the original High School Musical actors. What time is it? Time to break it down:  

What Is The High School Musical 4: The Reunion In HSMTMTS?

First off, here’s how HSMTMTS sets up this High School Musical reunion. The season starts with East High becoming the setting of Disney’s High School Musical 4: The Reunion and the current Wildcats being recruited as extras as the production is being filmed. It puts somewhat of a wrench in their plans to put on a production of High School Musical 3 ahead of many of the theatre club’s graduations. 

In Season 3, some of the current Wildcats met Corbin Bleu while at Camp Shallow Lake as he became the host of a documentary series taking place on the grounds following their production of Frozen. He played a heightened version of himself, and as he told CinemaBlend last year, he enjoyed playing “a bit of an ass” for the season. In Season 4, Corbin Bleu comes to East High to reprise his role as Chad, but he’s not the only original actor to return to his Disney Channel roots. 

Who Returns To East High For High School Musical 4?

Now that I’ve seen Season 4 of HSMTMTS in full, let’s talk about the original cast that came back and how the series handled their return. Sadly, not all the Wildcats came together. 

Corbin Bleu: As already mentioned, Corbin Bleu returned to Season 4 after previously guesting in Season 3. He’s barely in the season, but we do get to see Bleu and Monique Coleman together! 

Monique Coleman: The actress who played Taylor in all three High School Musical movies returns to play herself and Taylor for High School Musical 4: The Reunion. We learn that Taylor is the new principal of East High and is married to Chad in the fake movie. She also gives Courtney a sweet pep talk during the season finale as the high schooler wrestles with which university to go to. 

Lucas Grabeel: After the actor behind Ryan briefly returned to East High for a dream sequence musical number in Season 1, Lucas Grabeel additionally returned for Season 4 as himself and Ryan. Grabeel has a small role in the season as well, but one major revelation that occurs is confirmation that Ryan is gay, with a scene that has him kissing his partner and learning that they are expecting twins. The revelation is especially sweet considering Ryan and Sharpay were twins too. 

Kaycee Stroh: Kaycee Stroh, who played the role of Martha throughout the High School Musical movies, also returned to the halls of East High as herself and Martha for the fake fourth High School Musical movie. Stroh also has a small role in the season, but we learn that Martha is a “world-class” choreographer in the movie after memorably declaring “hip-hop is my passion!” during the "Stick To The Status Quo" number. 

Alyson Reed: High School Musical’s drama teacher Ms. Darbus also finds her way into the show’s High School Musical sequel. In one major scene for the character, Ms. Darbus announces her retirement, but like the other original actors, she gets very little screen time. 

Who Doesn’t Return, And Why

Now part of me thought that HSMTMTS was hiding a big surprise and not letting fans know of a surprise massive reunion between the entire cast, but that was not in the cards after all. Here’s who was notably missing and what we know about why they didn’t return. 

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens: Early in the final season, HSMTMTS does share a quick mention of the franchise’s star characters, sharing that Troy and Gabriella would be in couple’s therapy in the fourth movie. While many fans thought it was a clue when both Hudgens and Efron posed in front of East High late last year on separate occasions, it was simply coincidence. When speaking to EW about why Efron and Hudgens are not in the series, he said it was “definitely discussed” but Efron “has 20 movies going” and Hudgens is “super busy and so gracious.” 

Ashley Tisdale: Although Sharpay’s brother makes a brief appearance in the fourth season, Sharpay’s place in a fourth movie isn’t even mentioned. Federle did tell People that he believes the character is “now a full CEO” and a “Goop competitor,” along with saying she probably “consulted on Barbie and coached Margot Robbie” through her character. When it comes to why Tisdale couldn’t return, he shared that Tisdale is a new mom who is launching a very successful line of products and her own show on CBS. 

So a full reunion on HSMTMTS was not to be, but we at least appreciate the nostalgic cameos! The season ended up being very much about the new generation of cast members who have been the focus of the show all along. Perhaps in the future, the full cast can return for a full-fledged High School Musical 4 where they really get to explore where their characters are all these years later and sing some new songs together. For now, it was a sweet farewell to HSMTMTS! 

Spoilers for Season 4 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series are ahead. If you haven’t watched the final season on the 2023 TV schedule, you can stream it with a Disney+ subscription. 

The majority of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series centers around the love stories and friendships between the kids of the drama club, much like its Disney Channel predecessor. While Ricky and Gina were the primary focus of Season 4, and Carlos and Seb had one of the more dramatic arcs, Ashlyn and Maddox’s romance was sweet, wholesome, well-developed, and easily the best part of the musical series' final season. 

During Season 3 of HSMTMTS, Ashlyn (Julia Lester) realized she was bisexual when she developed a crush on Maddox (Saylor Bell) while they were at Camp Shallow Lake. However, since Ashlyn was still with Big Red, they didn't act on their feelings. In Season 4, we learned that he actually cheated on her with Seb, which was a whole other thing, and when they broke up, it opened the door for Lester’s character and Maddox to finally be together. 

Overall, their story about love and accepting one’s identity was super sweet, and between their chemistry and adorable scenes, it became obvious that they were the best part of this season of the HSM spinoff.

Ashlyn And Maddox’s Story Is Well Developed 

Over the course of the High School Musical spinoff, there have been tons of relationships. While Carlos and Seb have been a long-standing couple, and one of my favorite YA LGBTQ+ relationships on TV, and Ricky’s love triangle with Nini and Gina gave us the drama we need, both stories aren’t as well developed as Ashlyn and Maddox’s arc. 

In Season 3 they met at camp, and had undeniable chemistry. They became friends, and as they started to bond, Ashlyn started to develop feelings, however, nothing happened. She was still with Big Red, and she was still figuring out her sexuality. 

Then, when Season 4 began, the two were constantly texting, and Julia Lester’s character was clearly smitten whenever she got a text from Maddox. Eventually, Saylor Bell’s stage manager came to East High to help make the musical, and things really started to heat up. Their chemistry was electric, and like any HSM love story, their connection became even clearer and stronger when they sang together:

It’s a slow burn, and through all the texts, longing glances and quirky shared moments, I really bought into this adorable love story. 

They Had The Most Wholesome Love Story On High School Musical: The Musical: The Series 

Another big reason why Maddox and Ashlyn were my favorite part of HSMTMTS Season 4 was because they were the only couple not shrouded in drama the whole time. Carlos and Seb were dealing with a very odd cheating situation, and Ricky’s relationships always seemed to be full of turbulent moments. However, everything about these two gals and their romance was simply sweet and wholesome. 

I’m such a sucker for a friends-to-lovers storyline, and these two weren’t just that, they also had the most adorable development as they both realized their feelings and then adorably tried to act on them. Ultimately, their kiss at the end of the season, and everyone’s love for them made me even happier for the two. 

While these two were by no means the main focus of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series -- the spotlight was really on Gina and Ricky and the attention was around the OG High School Musical cast returning -- they were the real highlight of the season. Ashlyn and Maddox portrayed such sweet characters, and were able to play out a beautiful LGBTQ+ story of love and acceptance, and it was amazing. 

Mild High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 4 SPOILERS ahead. 

Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has always found a way to balance the story of a new generation of theatre-loving Wildcats with the nostalgia of the original Disney Channel movies. In the final season of one of the best Disney+ original shows, this is kicked up a notch as more of the original cast is in play this time around as High School Musical 4 is in production at East High. However, after CinemaBlend talked to the series’ creator, one should manage their expectations on the High School Musical reunion front. 

As it was previously announced in the fall, a High School Musical original cast reunion is occurring in Season 4 of HSMTMTS notably with Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman and Lucas Grabeel from the core six returning to East High to play themselves as actors returning for High School Musical 4. Early in the season, there’s mention of what’s going on with Troy and Gabriella, but when I asked series creator Tim Federle if Sharpay will get her moment, or some explanation of her absence, he had this to say: 

There you have it. The final season isn’t as much about the original cast coming together as it is a final encore and send-off for the high schoolers audiences have been following for the past few years. Federle teased the use of the original actors as more of a “grace note” than anything else, so if you’re tuning in for the OG Wildcats alone, be warned, it doesn’t shuffle ball change into any massive reunion with the original actors. 

That being said, as a longtime fan of the original franchise and fan of this new series, it’s fun to see some of the original cast roam around and interact with the new Wildcats without the focus completely turning to them. Plus, during our conversation, Federle spoke to how the original cast who does return contributed to the storylines of playing themselves on screen and reprising their characters all at once. In his words: 

We can’t wait to see how the series handles the reunion and how it says goodbye to the current Wildcats! This is especially true when it comes to Lucas Grabeel, who has already been confirmed to be canonically gay, per a previously released clip of the upcoming season.

The fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is upon us, and as we head into East High one final time, we’re going to be hit with all the High School Musical nostalgia. Not only will the crew be putting on HSM 3: Senior Year as their musical, but many of the OG HSM cast are also returning to make the movie High School Musical 4. So, this means, we’re bound to get tons of signature tracks from the original Disney movies, and with many of the songs from the second and third films not being shown in HSMTMTS there are tons of bops to choose from.

While the trailer revealed that “Now Or Never” (the opening song from Senior Year) will be included, we don’t know what other staples will make an appearance. That being said here are the ten High School Musical songs I need to see in the last season of of one of Disney+’s best original shows. 

High School Musical 

It seems incredibly obvious that the final self-titled song of High School Musical 3 will be included in the series. Although, it’s so necessary it had to be included on this list. In the final movie of the HSM trilogy, this tune serves as an epic finale that has “We’re All In This Together” vibes, and it shows off the talents of everyone in the cast. Honestly, I hope the song is used in the exact same way in HSMTMTS; it’d be the ultimate way to send off the beloved characters. 

I Want It All 

Sassy Sharpay has entered the chat, and her song demands screen time. We’ve gotten “Bop to the Top” and “Fabulous” in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, so I’m almost certain we’ll get “I Want It All” too. In Senior Year, this song is big, extra and uber theatrical. Basically, it’s every amazing and over-the-top thing about Ashley Tisdale’s character put into one song. Think about it, Carlos, Ashlyn and Kourtney singing this song? It’d be everything!

Can I Have This Dance 

The state of the couples at the end of HSMTMTS Season 3 left me with questions, so I’m not sure who will sing “Can I Have This Dance,” the gorgeous duo that Troy and Gabriella sing in High School Musical 3. Since Ricky and Gina will be playing the main couple in the stage musical (as you can see in the top image of this story), and they’re a couple in the show now, that seems like the most logical situation. However, it’s also totally possible that Ashlyn and Big Red or Carlos and Seb could get this song. No matter what, though, it will be wonderful, and it needs to be done. 

The Boys Are Back 

“The Boys Are Back” was my favorite song from High School Musical 3 as a kid, and ever since I found out HSMTMTS was renewed for Season 4, I’ve been hoping it’d be included in the series. Seeing Troy and Chad dance and bro out in the junkyard was so fun, and the track is truly epic. 

HSMTMTS is known for flipping the script, and not giving in to archetypes, so I think it’d be extra fun to see the girls sing this song, especially given Ashlyn, Kourtney and Gina’s passion for performing together. 

Scream 

I love angsty boy Troy, and HSM 3 took this to a whole new level with “Scream.” The Inception-like hallway spinning, the CGI basketballs, the “Bet On It”-esque dance moves, it’s perfection. 

Ricky didn’t give us the moodiness we needed when he performed the angsty "Bet On It" in Season 2, so this is his chance to redeem himself. He better be running down the halls of East High getting ready to scream his heart out this season, or else I’ll be bummed. 

A Night To Remember 

Every musical needs a great group number that comes in the middle of the story, and this season of HSMTMTS should look no further than “A Night To Remember.” In HSM3, this song is part of the musical the gang is making that represents their senior year, and it’s all about prom. Considering how meta the Disney+ series is, it seems fitting that they stage this big prom number as a musical number in a musical in a TV show. However, it also could be a legit getting ready for prom song, which would also be great. Really, as long as this song is included, I’ll be happy. 

I Don’t Dance 

In every other case, I’ve thought the current East High kids should be singing the songs from HSM in the show. However, “I Don’t Dance” is the exception. Both Corbin Bleu and Lucas Grabeel are set to return for Season 4, and I would love to see them recreate this fun baseball dance number from the second movie. Having them play themselves, Bleu would be able to show off his full talents as a singer and dancer and Grabeel would be able to bring back all that excellent Ryan Evans energy from the movies.  

Everyday 

One of my favorite moments from Season 1 of HSMTMTS was when Ricky and Nini sang “Breaking Free;” it was epic, romantic and amazing. “Everyday” from High School Musical 2 has a similar vibe, and is another classic Troy and Gabriella duet. Hopefully, this will be the big Ricky and Gina duet of the final season, that’d be so sweet, and such a great way to close out these two characters’ stories.  

Bet On It (For Real This Time) 

Now, I realize, “Bet On It” was used in Season 2 of HSMTMTS, however, it wasn’t performed seriously. I need to see this song with a character’s full force behind it, not the timid tone Ricky had as he was learning the lyrics. I want full angsty Efron, and based on the stress put on these kids as they try to find a cast for their musical, it feels like they have plenty of reasons to get some anger out by singing “Bet On It” as passionately as they can (and preferably on a golf course). 

We’re All In This Together (Reprise)  

Like “Bet On It,” I know “We’re All In This Together” has been done before. However, I think it’s vital to bring it back. While ending with “High School Musical” is a fantastic way to close out the show and pay homage to the movie, having one last “We’re All In This Together” would be so special. It's really be a lovely cathartic way to look back on both the legacy of this show and the movies that inspired it. 

While I don’t know if all ten of these tracks will make it into the final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, I do know we’re in for a treat. So, with the meta-musical series quickly approaching on the 2023 TV schedule, make sure your Disney+ subscriptions and dream playlists are in order so you’re ready for the epic conclusion of this East High class’s story on August 9. 

Wildcats, it’s almost time to say goodbye to another class of high schoolers from East High! In just one week, the final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series drops for those with a Disney+ subscription (all in one go this time) and I don’t think we’re ready for the emotional finale coming our way, especially after hearing from the cast and creator about filming the final moments of the series. 

When CinemaBlend spoke to Julia Lester, Frankie A. Rodriguez, and Dara Reneé (prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike being called) about their reaction to the finale of the series, they teased what’s to come from its ending. In Reneé’s words:  

The High School Musical series first premiered in the fall of 2019, right when the Disney+ subscription service began, if you can believe it. Four seasons later, here we are about to witness the final musical season for the next generation of Wildcats. As Renée shared, the cast has become somewhat of a “family” but she felt like how the TV show wraps up was really well done.

The series’ creator Tim Federle also spoke to us about what it was like to pen the finale and present it to his cast. In his words: 

Prepare your tissues for the sixth and eighth episodes of Season 4 when you binge the final season of one of Disney’s best original shows thus far. The upcoming season centers on the cast putting on a stage musical version of High School Musical 3 alongside Disney deciding to use East High as the setting of High School Musical 4: The Reunion, where original cast members like Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabreel, Monique Coleman, Kaycee Stroh, and Alyson Reed return to play their Disney Channel roles. 

Along with Season 4 answering our major questions about the High School Musical series after Season 3’s summer camp season, the final season will offer up more nostalgia from fans of the trilogy with moments featuring some of the original cast, including confirming Ryan’s sexuality. 

Just don’t expect to see Vanessa Hudgens, Zac Efron, or Ashley Tisdale in the series! Even though Hudgens and Efron separately returned to East High recently, it was apparently unrelated. As Hudgens shared back in October, she decided to return to the set when her boyfriend had a nearby baseball game, not because she was reprising the role of Gabriella.

The fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is nearly here in the 2023 TV premiere schedule, and the Disney+ show is delivering some serious nostalgia in the final batch of episodes. It was announced nearly a year ago that Season 4 would bring in former High School Musical stars Corbin Bleu (Chad), Monique Coleman (Taylor), Lucas Grabeel (Ryan), Bart Johnson (Coach Bolton), Alyson Reed (Ms. Darbus) and Kaycee Stroh (Martha) for a final bow, and a new sneak peek dropped a reveal that has been nearly twenty years coming: Grabeel's character is gay. And the internet is all in on the official news!

Speculation about Ryan Evans' sexuality has been happening going all the way back to 2006, with the first TV movie when there was no way of guessing that there would one day be a show like High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The speculation ramped up with High School Musical 2 in 2007 (particularly after the "I Don't Dance" number with Chad that left many theorizing that Ryan had a crush on Chad) and continued with HSM 3 despite that movie attempting to set up a romance between Ryan and Kelsi. 

Lucas Grabeel will play a fictionalized version of himself, so HSM:TM:TS isn't technically making Ryan Evans canonically gay just yet in promotional materials, but the sneak peek has fans excited for good reason. Take a look: 

Lucas Grabeel's love interest will evidently be played by Scott Hoying in the final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and the couple is already adorable after just a few moments of a sneak peek together! As somebody who watched the films back in the day and probably still knows most of those soundtracks by heart, I couldn't be happier to see Ryan get the kind of relationship that HSM director Kenny Ortega didn't think could be done on Disney when the franchise was just beginning. 

So, even though Disney Channel viewers didn't get to see Ryan confirmed as gay in the three movies, Disney+ subscribers will get to see it in a different form via HSM:TM:TS! Twitter was full of fans celebrating the reveal, even if the consensus wasn't exactly that anybody was surprised. Take a look at one reaction with an A+ gif choice:

That reads like the tweet of somebody who watched the High School Musical movies back in the day and has been waiting almost two decades to see confirmation that Lucas Grabeel's character is gay. It's possible that any fans of the films just caught up more recently via Disney+, though! Two movies of the jazz square-loving Ryan without a love interest then being written into a romance with Kelsi in the third certainly gave the impression that confirmation would never come. Though this development will happen in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, the reveal is even a hit among those who watched the original movies but haven't been tuning in to the Disney+ TV show. A HSM movie fan tweeted: 

It remains to be seen if HSM:TM:TS does officially establish that Ryan Evans the character was gay, since Lucas Grabeel is playing a fictionalized version of himself who is playing Ryan in Season 4. However it's handled, @CharCubed on Twitter raised a very good point about why this is such a big deal, even if the widespread belief already was that Ryan was gay:

For fans of both the HSM movies and the TV show, there is indeed a lot to celebrate! The fourth and final season should deliver plenty of nostagia with the cast members from the original three installments, and the sneak peek may have dropped a clue that Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale could make cameos before the end. I can't be the only one who wants to see Sharpay and Ryan sharing the screen again in some form or other after this sneak peek, right? 

The fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will premiere on Wednesday, August 9 on Disney+. You can find the three HSM movies on the Disney streamer as well. 

Growing up with diverse and representative media is vital. Luckily for us, the LGBTQ+ representation on mainstream television has increased over the years, giving us wonderful stories and lovable couples. This includes some iconic duos on young adult TV shows, and over the last couple of decades some truly wonderful pairings have graced our screens, from Willow and Tara on Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20 years ago to Nick and Charlie from last year's breakout hit Heartstopper. 

So, to celebrate pride month and some magnificent YA content, here are a few of the couples we consider iconic LGBTQ+ relationships on TV. 

Willow & Tara - Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was revolutionary in a lot of ways, from having Sarah Michelle Gellar as the badass titular character to the iconic couple of Willow and Tara, who were one of the most significant same-sex couples in TV history. Over the last two decades, there have been many essays written and posts on social media about how these two magical characters helped women and acted as one of, if not the first, lesbian couples they saw represented on screen in a fantastic way.

Charlie & Nick - Heartstopper

Heartstopper tells the story of two teen boys, Charlie and Nick, and their stories toward finding themselves and exploring their identities. In Season 1 of the show, we learned that Joe Locke’s character, Charlie, had really struggled at school as many kids bully him for being gay. But, then he meets Kit Connor’s Nick, who accepts him for who he is, and is on his own journey of self-discovery, and from there, their adorable relationship begins. 

Throughout the first installment, we see the two boys blossom as a patient, wholesome, and real love story is played out. Overall, Heartstopper feels like a big warm hug, and it's such a joyful representation of the LGBTQ+ community.

Santana & Britney - Glee 

Talk about an iconic friends-to-lovers story! Britney and Santana from Glee were one of the first LGBTQ+ couples, other than Kurt and Blaine, who I personally saw on TV, and it really made a big impact on me. Seeing these two women realize they loved each other romantically was deeply moving, plus we got some legendary musical numbers out of it – I’m looking at you “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” 

Both characters were developed and performed brilliantly, making them well-rounded and fantastic individuals on the show. So, when they got together they just became better, and stronger.

Adam & Eric - Sex Education

While the entire Sex Education cast is fantastic, Ncuti Gatwa’s performance as Eric is by far one of my favorites, and his relationship with Adam has been a real highlight of the show. 

Even though they didn’t last long, seeing as they broke up at the end of Sex Education’s third season, for the time they were together, they were one of my favorite couples. I understand why they’re no longer a duo, as it was time for Eric to find someone who was “ready to fly” like him. However, there’s also no doubt how lovely they were, and how much they helped each other grow and accept who they are.

Clarke & Lexa - The 100

There’s nothing like love during the apocalypse, or I guess in The 100’s case after the apocalypse. Following Clarke and 99 other kids’ journey down to Earth from space to see if it's habitable, we quickly find out humans have survived on the planet, and they don’t love the space folk. However, after fighting for a season and a half, Clarke and Lexa, one of the leaders on Earth, realize they can help each other, and they come to the conclusion that they actually like each other. 

To see two incredibly strong women as leaders on the show, and to see their epic love story was powerful, and it meant a lot to see that kind of representation in a mainstream sci-fi YA show.

Seb & Carlos - High School Musical: The Musical: The Series 

I can’t even begin to explain how happy my heart was when Seb showed up to be Carlos’ date at homecoming in Season 1 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. This show does a magnificent job of highlighting and normalizing LGBTQ+ relationships in high school, and part of that is through this lovely little romance between Carlos and Seb. 

Also, these two sing some phenomenal duets and perform wonderful numbers for each other that will blow you away and really bring home the point that Seb and Carlos are iconic:

Emily & Alison - Pretty Little Liars

While figuring out the identity of A was the priority on Pretty Little Liars, the couples were a close second. One of the most iconic pairings on this show was, obviously, Emily and Alison, and their relationship was one of the major points of LGBTQ+ representation in YA media during the early 2010s. 

Their soapy story was dramatic and over the top, but like every relationship on PLL you couldn’t help but ship Emison.

Victor & Benji - Love, Victor  

This spin-off show to Love, Simon follows a new kid, Victor, who DMs Simon looking for advice on how to navigate figuring out his identity and coming out to his friends and family. What makes this show so special is it deals with the intersections of race, sexual orientation, and religion. Following Victor’s family as they move to Atlanta, we see a working-class Latinx, Catholic family adapt to their new life, as Victor goes on his own coming-out journey.

Part of that journey is his relationship with Benji, the super cute barista Victor works with. Their relationship is sweet and wholesome, however, they face their fair share of bumps in the road, especially in Season 3. But, eventually, the two realize how much they love each other, as Victor continues on his own personal quest of growth and self-love.

There is so much power in growing up with media that allows you to feel seen, and for so many folks, shows like the ones listed above have helped them feel exactly that. From great book-to-screen adaptations, like Heartstopper and Love, Victor, to popular classics like Buffy and Glee, there are some great YA shows out there that feature iconic LGBTQ+ relationships, and these were eight of our favorites.  

When it comes to teen romances, some are…a little less than wholesome. 

That’s not to say that’s a bad thing. There are plenty of great teen dramas that I could recommend, but I wouldn’t exactly call them the most wholesome shows to watch. Like, for example, Euphoria is most certainly not the most uplifting series, as it features sex, drugs, overdoses, and much, much more. 

But, even those on the lighter side, like The CW show, The Vampire Diaries, or even Netflix's Sex Education, often feature less than chaste material for people who just want a pure, fluffy teen romance to enjoy. Truth be told, those are sometimes hard to find. However, in my many years of watching teen shows, I’m here to give you five wholesome teen romance shows that you should check out if you just want something that will make you smile on a bad day. 

Heartstopper (2022-Present)

Starting with a 2022 Netflix release, we take a look at Heartstopper, based on the graphic novels of the same name. This hit won over the hearts of viewers with its LGBTQ+ storyline featuring Nick and Charlie, two schoolboys who fall for each other when they end up in the same class together. 

I could go on for days about why Heartstopper is genuinely one of the best teen romances to grace our television screens in years. Considering how popular it became during its initial run, I am not the only person who feels this way, but for those who are wondering if it really is worth all the hype, I can fully say yes, it is. It is a fantastic coming-out teen story that would feel great for anyone who is struggling to open up about their sexuality, and not only that, but it features a genuinely positive love story that anyone can relate to. 

The Heartstopper cast is filled to the brim with diversity and talent and they're always fun to follow. The show itself has already been renewed for Season 2, which is currently in production as of this writing in October 2022, so you know that it’s a big show. If you’re going to give one series a shot, let it be Heartstopper.

Never Have I Ever (2020-Present)

Next up, we have another Netflix original, Never Have I Ever. Co-created by comedian and actress Mindy Kaling and loosely based on her teenage years, we follow Devi, a simple girl in high school who is struggling with the sudden loss of her father. Now, she struggles to not only find love, but find herself. 

I love this show. Not only is Never Have I Ever a great example of what diversity should be in a show, with wonderful South Asian representation, but the coming of age story is so relatable. I’m a 24-year-old woman and even now, I feel myself relating to a lot of what Devi has gone through, simply because that was what my high school experience was like. 

The romances in this show are very real too. They aren’t over the top for the sake of drama (looking at you, Gossip Girl) and not toxic in any way shape or form (Euphoria). They’re just simple teen crushes and curiosity that start to develop and become more over time, like how a romance should be. It’s just great overall. 

The Never Have I Ever cast is also spot-on talented, with everyone providing a riveting performance and creating an honest to God portrayal of what an Indian-American household is like. The show has gotten a fourth season, most likely to debut in 2023, which will serve as its final season, so now is the time to watch.

Love, Victor (2020-2022)

Usually when it comes to spinoffs of movies, I’m not the biggest fan. The Rings of Power on Amazon is good but not my favorite. The Fantastic Beasts films have deteriorated over time. There are so many examples I could bring up, but I’ll choose not to, because we will be here for hours. 

However, the one spinoff I did find myself enjoying a whole lot was Love, Victor. The teen romantic dramedy was a spinoff of the popular LGBTQ+ romantic comedy, Love, Simon, this time following Victor Salazar, a new student who is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality and who, at one point, reaches out to Simon to learn how to handle these new life changes. 

Love, Victor is exactly what I would think of if I think about a show that is completely wholesome. While it does deal with topics like sex, any good teen dramedy usually addresses that. What really makes Love, Victor such a great wholesome teen romance is that it shows the true progression of how people deal with not only their sexuality, but feelings as a whole. It’s scary at first but over time, you start to gain confidence and grow into yourself and that’s what Victor does. 

I’m always going to be so sad that this show was cancelled after three seasons but I suppose I can be happy with the three we did end up getting. The Love, Victor cast is talented as heck, too.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (2019-Present)

Remember what I said when I brought up that I didn’t like spinoffs? That still stands – but High School Musical: The Musical: The Series gets past that, surprisingly. As someone who was a huge fan of the original movies, this show surprised me in more ways than one. 

We follow the (fictional) students who go to the real East High, where HSM was filmed, and now, they are going to be putting on their own stage production of the movie musical. But, of course, relationships and drama make this mockumentary-style teen drama a fun time. 

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is a joy to watch, with some great song covers and original songs. While the drama of producing a school musical is at its center, it’s the relationships and romances that are really the focus and add character, just as they did with the films. To be honest, it’s the most basic teen romances in the world and yet, I can’t get enough of them. 

Plus, you also get to see Olivia Rodrigo before she blew up in the music world with her hit debut album and documentary on Disney+. And yes, she’s just as amazing as you would expect.

Dash & Lily (2020)

Last but not least, we take a look at Dash & Lily, a short-lived fun teen romance show that takes place during the most wonderful time of year, Christmas. In this Netflix original starring Austin Abrams and Midori Francis, we follow two teenagers with different personalities who end up falling for each other as they trade secret messages in books across the city, striving to figure out who the other is while running into problems along the way. 

I really liked Dash & Lily. It came out in 2020 and was a great show that really took away the pain and stresses the year brought to all of us, and was a sweet and wholesome romance to follow. It’s why I’m so sad it was cancelled after only one season. 

In retrospect, thought, a part of me is almost glad it was, because the love story was just what someone might need on a bad day, and it ended perfectly. Uplifting, sweet, and realistic, taking place during a time of year that is always so magical. If you’ve never seen it before, be sure to check it out.

There are so many amazing shows to watch, but sometimes all I need is a little bit of fluffy teen romance, and these series will surely scratch that itch. You just might have found a new favorite. 

Disney+ has plenty of great original shows to watch, from the world of Marvel to the world of Star Wars, all of which you can access with a Disney+ subscription.

As one of the best streaming services that you can access, here are some of the best original TV shows on Disney+ that you can check out now. 

The Mandalorian

In this Disney+ Star Wars TV show, five years after the fall of the Empire, a lone Mandalorian bounty hunter ends up picking up a bounty that is a green, big-eared, child-like being. From this moment, he takes him under his care with plans to somehow return him to where he came from, and this inspires a whole whirlwind of adventures.

I mean, do I even need to try and convince you to watch this show? It’s one of the most popular on the platform, has a great storyline, and you get to see baby Yoda. What’s not to love? With three seasons to watch, and a possible fourth one on the way, this is the show you have to watch – although, if you end up loving it, there is a Din Djarin/Grogu movie releasing as well in the near future. 

And if you want more Star Wars content, be sure to check out The Book of Boba Fett, a spinoff of The Mandalorian featuring the famous character, Boba Fett. There’s also Star Wars: The Bad Batch, an animated series, as well as a miniseries about Obi-Wan Kenobi, a live-action series revolving around Ahsoka, and many others.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series

In this comedy drama, we follow a group of students who are attending the same school that High School Musical was shot in. And we get to watch them as they put on the school’s very first production of High School Musical as their own winter musical.

Okay, I know that the title of the series can make it seem a little off-putting, but I can promise you that High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is actually pretty good. The cast all work very well off of each other and create some funny and heartfelt moments. Plus, the original songs are full of love, spunk, and several catchy beats that will have you tapping your foot. With four complete seasons, now is the time to get your head in the game and binge this show.

Andor 

We may have already mentioned The Mandalorian on here, but I need to give some praise to another specific Star Wars show, Andor. Acting as a prequel to Rogue One, this series tells the story of Cassian Andor, one of the revolutionaries in the movie, and how he changed from being cynical of the revolution to becoming one of the faces of it, and devoting his life to the cause. 

The fact that Andor didn’t do as well in ratings really upsets me, because it’s hands down the best Star Wars show that has come out since The Mandalorian’s first season. It features a beautiful, well-written story that perfectly captures who Andor is as a person, and has some excellent fight sequences and some killer effects. A second second is going to come out, so now is the best time to binge the first.

Behind The Attraction

As a fan of theme parks, especially the Disney Parks, I always wondered what went into the creation of a famous ride. Well, that’s what Behind the Attraction aims to do. Through each episode, Disney Imagineers take you on a journey of the process of how a famous Disney theme park attraction was created, from Jungle Cruise to The Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror. 

There are some amazing docuseries out there, but Behind the Attraction has won my heart ever since its premiere in 2021. It’s almost like learning about your childhood in a special kind of way, because as someone who has such great memories on some of these rides, it’s really cool to find out how they were made. This is certainly a great option if you want to learn something but also want to be entertained.

Doctor Who 

If you’re a fan of the Doctor Who series, then you have to check out the latest iteration of the classic character in the Disney+ series, Doctor Who. Led by Ncuti Gatwa as the doctor with co-star Millie Gibson, Doctor Who follows the doctor and his companion as they travel across space and time – as well as encountering one of the most powerful enemies that any Doctor has had to encounter. 

I mean, it’s Doctor Who. I’m sure I don’t really have to convince fans of the show to watch it because you already know what you’re getting into. But if you don’t, the series is basically the epitome of sci-fi and you’ll be taken on a classic time-traveling adventure that I’m sure you’ll love. You can’t get much better than Doctor Who.

Monsters At Work

If you’re a fan of the best Pixar movies, then you have to check out Monsters at Work. Considered a sequel to the Monsters Inc. movies, this series follows scarers – now turned into comedians for laugh power – and how they adjust to the change, namely new recruit Tylor Tuskmon, who doesn’t really know how to be funny. 

As someone who grew up loving the first Monsters Inc. film, I was such a huge fan of Monsters at Work when it first released and the second season is just as cute. It’s fun to revisit this world that I love, and besides that, it’s also enjoyable to watch Mike and Sulley try and help out new characters. What is there not to like?

The Muppets Mayhem 

Are you ready for mayhem? Because the Muppets are! In this comedy musical, The Muppet Mayhem is a musical series that mainly follows an A&R executive who has to deal with everyone’s favorite crazy muppets, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Machine, as they struggle to make an album that goes platinum for the first time ever. 

There’s not much I can say about this show that hasn’t already been said. The cast is tons of fun, the story is enjoyable, and it’s the Muppets, classic characters that have been around the block once or twice for years on end, so you know it’s going to be a fun time to watch them on television. As Adam Holmes put it, it’s a welcome jolt for the franchise as a whole.

The Crossover 

If you’re looking for a good coming-of-age story mixed in with a sports drama, then The Crossover is the way to go. A new series to the platform, The Crossover follows the lives of Josh and JB Bell, two basketball players with the world ahead of them as they try to navigate their own personal lives as well as the potential to be bigger than they ever thought imaginable. 

I’ll say that I’m a little annoyed that The Crossover hasn’t gotten that much marketing because it is a really good show. It’s not going to be a huge heavy-hitter like Game of Thrones or something like that, but The Crossover provides a valuable story to those growing up and learning to start a journey into young adulthood, and I find that something that’s irreplaceable.

Marvel Original TV Shows

While normally I would give these all their separate sections, because there’s so many -- and only going to be more – it’s better to group them together:

With several shows and specials out, Disney+ has been pushing out Marvel shows like no one’s business. From the strange world of WandaVision to watching the Guardians of the Galaxy celebrate Christmas in the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, to seeing Loki reach glorious purpose in Loki, there’s something for everyone. 

What’s even better is that the former Netflix Marvel shows, like Daredevil, Jessica Jones and more, are also on the  platform and have joined up with the rest of the Marvel family, so now you can check those out on Disney+ too. And with Daredevil: Born Again coming in 2025, now is the perfect time to catch up on his story – or maybe even see him in She-Hulk.

I could go on and on about these TV series as a Marvel fan, but if you’re into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you have to watch these shows.

Parallels 

This French original is one that really went under the radar and deserves a little more praise. Parallels is a sci-fi series that follows four teenagers who find their lives altered drastically when a physics experiment goes wrong – fracturing all of spacetime. 

There’s only six episodes, so it’s a super compact show that tells a good story, and is one of those series’ that you could binge in an afternoon if you wanted to. I think out of any miniseries that could be on this list, Parallels is certainly one of the best you could spend your time watching – and the subtitles aren’t that bad to read either.

Light & Magic

I have to give a shout out to this amazing show, Light & Magic. This docu-series is actually about the history of the company, Industrial Light & Magic, the visual effects company with credits that include movies such as the Star Wars films, Terminator 2, E.T. and so many more, and the creative mind behind it all – George Lucas. 

For movie enthusiasts, this docuseries is the one to watch. It’s so fascinating to learn about what happened behind the scenes of some of the effects in these movies and how they all came to be, and hands down, I would recommend this show to anyone who just wants to learn more about visual effects. Truly outstanding.

All The Same…Or Not

Last but not least, I’ll give some praise to All The Same…or Not. This series hails from Brazil, and follows 16-year-old Carol, who is going through a lot right now, from her mom marrying someone new to her first real relationship, all while starting a new year of high school. 

I’ll be honest and say that this is a show purely for either adolescents or older children, because a lot of the lessons that are taught are aimed towards them and learning how to be comfortable in your own skin, embrace your true feelings and more – but as someone who has watched this with younger members of my family, I can say it’s still fun. I enjoy the aspect of coming-of-age shows, and this one is a fun one.

With all these entertaining shows, it might be hard to pick just one, but hopefully now you have an idea of some of the best. And, who knows what might happen in the next year or so? Hopefully we can get some new series to add directly onto this list.

Allow me to set the scene, it’s July, and the third season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is up next on the TV schedule. I’m scrolling through Instagram and nearly throw my phone out of excitement when I see Vanessa Hudgens has posted a video in front of East High. The internet blew up, and theories and speculation began to run around about the actress returning to the franchise that started her career. Now she's providing a bit of clarity as to why she was there, if she'll be on HSMTMTS, and her thoughts on Zac Efron's serendipitous post in front of the legendary school.

Vanessa Hudgens Explains Why She Was At East High

The actress did an interview with EW and  she was asked about her video at East High, Hudgens responded with: 

Hudgens' boyfriend, Cole Tucker is an outfielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and while his team was playing in Utah, the actress tagged along. Which is what led to this nostalgic video: 

Then a few weeks later, Troy Bolton himself, Zac Efron also posted a photo at East High, and Hudgens responded in the best way. 

After They Both Showed Up At East High, Vanessa Hudgens Has An A+ Response To Zac Efron’s Post 

To add fuel to the already blazing fire of speculation, Zac Efron posted a Breakfast Club-inspired photo in front of the high school not too long after Hudgens. Check it out: 

These two posts led a lot of fans to believe the duo would return to the High School Musical franchise, however, it turned out to just be a coincidence. In response to the post, Hudgens said: 

She's right she is a trendsetter, now hopefully this means they'll both come back. Even though the stars haven’t shown up on HSMTMTS Efron has said he’d be down to come back if he has time. He adorably said his “heart’s still there” and that going back to East High would be “incredible.” With this new interview, Hudgens has also chimed in about if she’d return.

The Gabriella Actress Weighs In On Possibly Appearing On High School Musical: The Musical: The Series 

While we have seen the return of Corbin Bleu and other High School Musical alum to the spin-off Disney+ series, fans have been begging for the two leads to come back. With the announcement of many OG HSM cast members coming in for Season 4 of HSMTMTS one of the biggest questions after Season 3 has been if Efron, Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale would be back as well. 

While Efron has said he’d be down, he is a busy fella. Hudgens is in a similar boat, but when asked if she’d return, she said: 

Well, it's not a no. 

It would for sure be a blessing if she was able to come back, even if it was just a little cameo in the upcoming season. However, with these coincidental posts from Utah, and the return of basically everyone but them to the franchise, it seems highly likely both Efron and Hudgens will “Work This Out” and come back so that we're truly "all in this together" come Season 4 of HSMTMTS.

That’s right, we'll be getting more of that spirit, as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has been renewed for Season 4. With Season 3 featuring plenty of fun moments in its premiere and leading to big questions after the finale, there’s plenty to wonder about where this Disney+ original series is going to go now that it is entering its own senior year. 

Who is going to be in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 4? What is the plot going to be about? What covers are we going to hear? To address some of your queries, here is what we know so far about the upcoming season.

What Is The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Release Date?

Get ready Wildcats, because High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is coming back for a fourth and final time on August 9th, 2023, as reported from an official press release from Disney+. The press release also confirmed that this would be the show’s last season. 

It also confirmed that all eight episodes of the show's final season are going to come out that day as well. It’s going to be so sad saying goodbye to this generation of Wildcats, but hopefully, they’ll get the proper sendoff that they deserve. 

Most Of The Main Cast Is Coming Back

If you were wondering if the cast was going to come back after their wild and eventful summer in Season 3, wonder no more, because it’s been confirmed that almost all of the cast is going to return to their roles on the comedy mockumentary series, according to the announcement of Season 4, as confirmed from the press release that was sent out in June 2023.

This includes Joshua Bassett as Ricky, Sofia Wylie as Gina, Dara Renee as Kourtney, Julia Lester as Ashlyn, Frankie Rodriguez as Carlos, Kate Reinders as Miss Jenn, and Liamani Segura as Emmy. 

The cast has been plenty busy lately, with several of them appearing in other projects. Bassett has been working on his own music career, and Wylie is actually going to be starring in a new Netflix film, The School for Good and Evil, which released October 2022. But, it’s still exciting to see them come back to the roles that we all know them from for another season of fun. 

Also confirmed for Season 4 of the show is that there are several new characters that have already been announced.

These include Kylie Cantrall, Matthew Sato, Caitlin Reilly, and Vasthy Mompoint, who will all have recurring guest roles in the upcoming fourth season, with appearances in shows like Grown-ish and the HBO Max original, Hacks, already under their belts. 

Olivia Rodrigo Isn’t Confirmed To Return – But The Door Is Always Open

One of the standouts from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is Olivia Rodrigo. While she was on The Disney Channel prior to her role in the series, she became an even bigger star in 2021 with her budding musical career – making it much harder for her to be in the last season of the Disney+ show. 

She was a recurring guest star for Season 3, and at the very end of the finale, it seemed like her character, Nini (as well as Rodrigo) were almost saying goodbye to East High for good in order for her to expand her career out on the West Coast. So, right now, it’s unclear if Olivia Rodrigo is going to return for the fourth season. From the press release, it also doesn’t bring her up as a guest star at all, so we’re not sure if she’s going to come back. 

However, the showrunner, Tim Federle, spoke to Entertainment Weekly in September 2022 about her sweet exit in Season 3 and said that Rodrigo is always welcome to come back to the show if she wants to:

To be honest, I wouldn’t blame Rodrigo in the slightest if she didn’t return, because she’s had such a flourishing career these last couple of years, including her own documentary on Disney+. I’ll be glad to support her in any way – and yes, that includes buying concert tickets. 

Several Stars From The Original Series Will Arrive With The Fourth Season

While it is unfortunate news that Rodrigo might not be coming back, the press release revealed that  several members of the original High School Musical movies are going to be returning for Season 4. 

This includes Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed, and Kaycee Stroh. While they are also coming back as themselves in the show, they will be reprising their roles from the movies (Chad, Taylor, Ryan, Coach Bolton, Ms. Darbus, and Martha Cox) for the plot — which we’ll get into a little later. 

There are still three members missing from the original line-up of High School Musical stars (Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale), but both Efron and Hudgens did post pictures outside of the actual East High in Salt Lake City in 2022.

Even so, in the interview above, Federle did say he wasn’t “that clever” to have them do those posts, but that he is trying hard to bring as many original cast members to the fourth season as possible. 

Season 4 Will Be The Last, And Follow The Crew Performing A Production Of “High School Musical: Senior Year”

Remember when I alluded to the plot for Season 4 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series? This is where we get into it – and boy is it going to be a wild season, according to the announcement for the upcoming episodes.

The first season featured a stage production of the first High School Musical. The second was all about Beauty and the Beast. The third took us to Frozen in the middle of summer camp. Now, we’re going back to our roots, as the kids look to put on a stage production of High School Musical: Senior Year for Season 4. 

However, their lives are thrown upside down when a new movie in the High School Musical franchise is set to film at their school, called High School Musical 4: The Reunion, bringing back the original stars from the film to reprise their roles, with the Wildcats we now know as featured extras, throwing a wrench in their musical plans. Both Lucas Grabeel and Corbin Bleu have guest-starred on the show before, but now, they're back with other stars.

That’s right. This is about to be very meta. 

The cast has already spoken about the craziness of Season 4 in an interview with E! News, where Joshua Bassett pointed out that the fourth season is going to be “three steps ahead” of all the other seasons. And honestly, I can believe that. 

Filming Has Finished

The last thing we know about the fourth season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is that filming took place in 2022. In September 2022, the showrunner, Tim Federle, posted to his Instagram a picture of several cast members as well as the alumni from the HIgh School Musical franchise that were joining the show, saying that it was a good “first week” of shooting. 

In December 2022, Federle took to Instagram again to celebrate the wrap of Season 4, saying that filming had officially come to a close. 

With this in mind, that means that the premiere date is looming even closer as post-production continues. 

Gosh, just writing this makes me want to listen to my HSM3 soundtrack over and over again. Can Season 4 come sooner?   

As a zillennial, I live for the nostalgic days of old Disney Channel like a millennial, and I love the new self-aware programming that's been released on Disney+ like a Gen Z. Which makes High School Musical: The Musical: The Series the perfect show for me. Now, with Season 3 over and Season 4 on its way, I’m left with lots of questions about what might happen next, and how Season 4 could call back to the original High School Musical. 

Season 3 took the students and viewers to Camp Shallow Lake, where the cast put on a production of Frozen while Corbin Bleu came back to HSM to make a documentary about the summer. Chaos ensued and left me with five big questions going into Season 4.  

How Will The Documentary Impact Things Moving Forward?

While all the kids were excited about the documentary, they soon found out it portrayed them as terrible, dramatic people. The love triangle between Ricky, Gina and EJ looked a lot more dramatic than it is. They made it look like Gina and Kourtney are rivals. And Jet professed his love for Kourtney. To quote Ashlyn: 

The episode promptly ends with everyone leaving the theater and not addressing their problems. Leaving the door open for lots, and lots, and lots of drama in Season 4.

Which Relationships Will Survive?

The season ended with the state of many romantic relationships up in the air. 

The big news was that Gina broke up with EJ and professed her love for Ricky at the end of the season. They kissed and now we’ll just have to wait and see if it works out. Both Ricky and Gina haven’t been able to make relationships last more than a season, so I’m not sure if they will work out in Season 4. 

There are two other couples I'm curious about. Ashlyn came out as bisexual in Season 3 and had a crush on one of the girls at camp. She wasn’t feeling so sure about her boyfriend Big Red, but at the end of the season we found out he’s bi too, and she seemed super happy about that. 

I have hope for these two for sure! As for Carlos and Seb, things might be a little murkier. Carlos was a major instigator of drama in Season 3 and after the documentary makes him look like he cheated on Seb, he immediately got out of his chair to call his boyfriend. Leaving things up in the air. 

How Much High School Musical Music Will Actually Be In Season 4?

The reason I love HSMTMTS is the music. It’s filled with fun original songs, some of which are written by actors on the show like Joshua Bassett, Olivia Rodrigo and Dara Reneé. The music also pulls at my nostalgic heartstrings by incorporating songs from High School Musical, HSM 2, Camp Rock, and Disney classics like Beauty and the Beast and Frozen. While all these originals and non-HSM songs are fine and dandy, I personally think there should be way more music from the Disney Channel movies that started it all. I’m feeling good about our odds to see this in Season 4 because the showrunner Tim Federle told People:

We haven’t heard any songs from High School Musical 3 yet, and some of the classics from the sequel of the HSM trilogy have not been used (I’m looking at you “I Don’t Dance” and “Work This Out”). So fingers crossed we get even more of the throwback hits come Season 4.

Will Olivia Rodrigo Ever Return?

At the end of Season 2, I felt certain Olivia Rodrigo would not return for Season 3 of HSMTMTS. As one of the biggest pop stars at the moment, I assumed she wouldn’t have the time. I was surprised when I saw her in the promo for the newest season. However, she only appeared in a few episodes in a very minor role. At the end of the season, it felt like her character Nini got a meaningful send-off as she left for LA to pursue a songwriter career. While this all feels confirmed, it’s not. Federle recently told EW:

So while it feels like she’s gone, I don’t think we can leave her out of the equation. Maybe Rodrigo will for Season 4, even if it’s just a 'lil cameo...

Will We See Troy, Gabriella And Sharpay Back At East High?

Lastly, and what I would consider most important, there have been rumors swirling around the two leads High School Musical, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, returning for Season 4. From what Federle told EW (in the article we linked to previously), while there is no solid answer as to if the duo will be back, there will be cameos in Season 4. 

Toward the beginning of the latest season original HSM cast members posted that they were at the real East High in Utah; Troy Bolton himself, Zac Efron posted on July 22 and our Gabriella, Vanessa Hudgens, posted a video on June 26. In August, Ashley Tisdale posted a fun video to the HSM 3 bop “I Want It All.” Efron has also said he would happily come back to the franchise, saying his “heart is still there.”

So all signs seem to point toward Tory, Gabriella and maybe Sharpay possibly returning for Season 4. Especially with the announcement that Season 4 is set to follow the students back at East High in the midst of the filming of High School Musical 4: The Reunion. However, nothing has been confirmed for an appearance by Efron, Hudgens or Tisdale. 

Disney+ announced that the season is confirmed to feature OG HSM cast members: Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed and Kaycee Stroh. They will be playing themselves, like how Bleu did in Season 3. 

As for, HSM4, the movie within the show, the actors will reprise their roles as Chad Danforth, Taylor McKessie, Ryan Evans, Coach Jack Bolton, Ms. Darbus and Martha Cox, respectively.  With the confirmed return of just about everyone except Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale, it seems inevitable that the three would join the cast somehow, even if it's a little cameo. 

In summary, there are a lot of question marks going into Season 4 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. But after Season 3 it seems like they have set the stage for something massive next season between the relationships, documentary fallout, and the possibility of a historic reunion. Season 4 is still a ways away but for now, you can check out the first three seasons of HSMTMTS with a Disney+ subscription.

During the D23 Expo early this month, the studio excited Disney Channel fans when it was announced that the fourth season of High School Musical: The Musical - The Series would include a storyline where High School Musical 4: The Reunion was being filmed at East High with the show’s high schooler going cast being extras in the meta movie. As production for Season 4 begins, the returning original cast has been revealed with some key stars missing. 

In a Disney+ press release, it was announced that HSMTMTS is currently filming in Salt Lake City, Utah with some memorable original cast members back at East High. Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed and Kaycee Stroh are returning to the franchise after starring in the original trilogy, but its biggest stars Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale are notably absent from the lineup. Corbin Bleu returns for his second season in the Disney+ series following Season 3, where he played “a bit of an ass” version of himself as the East High kids went to summer camp and he led a filmed production of Frozen. Lucas Grabeel also previously guest starred in the series’ first season. Monique Coleman and Bleu previously reunited for Lifetime’s A Christmas Dance Reunion last year after playing Chad and Taylor. 

Alyson Reed played East High’s theater teacher Ms. Darbus, Bart Johnson played the father of Zac Efron’s Troy Bolton and Kaycee Stroh was a supporting character named Martha Cox, who revealed “hip-hop is my passion!” in the “Stick To The Status Quo” number. While it’ll be exciting to see these High School Musical original cast members back at East High for the “filming” of the fourth movie in the franchise within the show, it really won’t be the same without the movies’ brightest stars and leads. 

Months back, on separate days, both Vanessa Hudgens (on Instagram on June 26) and Zac Efron (also on his Instagram on July 22) posted on social media their return to East High. It led fans to believe it was coinciding with their reunion moment, however HSMTMTS has reportedly only now begun filming. When the show’s creator Tim Federle was asked about it, he said this to TVLine: 

Previously, Zac Efron has shared his hopes to return to Troy Bolton someday, but for the time being, it seems like the High School Musical reunion is incomplete with the trio of Disney Channel stars not on set with their former costars. The Wildcats are back, and this time High School Musical: The Musical - The Series follows the new generation of East High theatre kids during their summer vacation. In Season 3, which premiered its first episode this past week, there are a lot of fresh and varied elements at play, but one exciting tradition is being kept alive: Joshua Bassett is still writing original music for the series. And when we spoke to the HSMTMTS star, he discussed the process of penning songs for the new episodes.

From the start of their runs on the show, both Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo have written songs for HSMTMTS, such as their duet “Just For A Moment.” They've since continued to use the show as an outlet to refine their talents, as evidenced by Bassett and Rodrigo writing original songs for the Disney+ series during the second season. During our interview with Bassett, the actor shared how his latest original tune came together for Season 3:

The song is called “Finally Free” and comes into play when Ricky is driving his car over to summer camp to join his friends. The drive comes on the heels of him breaking things off with his girlfriend, Lily (played by Olivia Rose Keegan), after realizing the pairing was not an ideal one. As Joshua Bassett shared with CinemaBlend, he was asked to write the song for that key moment in the series and was quickly able to carve it. Check out the HSMTMTS music moment below: 

Since getting his start on the show, Joshua Bassett has ventured out into his own solo career and has released a number of self-written singles. This September, the 21-year-old actor/singer will go on a sold out world tour that will start in Toronto, Canada, go through the United States and end in Europe. It seems like Bassett is heading toward releasing his first record and is well on his way to becoming an artist in his own right as he continues to be part of the High School Musical spinoff. 

Meanwhile, Olivia Rodrigo has blown up big time within the past year with her 2021 record SOUR, which earned her Grammy wins, massive streaming numbers and a tour she recently wrapped up. While she's still part of HSMTMTS, Rodrigo will reportedly get a “meaningful sendoff” this season. Joshua Bassett also said this: 

It sounds like more of the cast members are stepping up and writing original songs for the series, as Olivia Rodrigo moves way from her post as the lead star. This season will revolve around the East High teens (mainly Sofia Wylie’s Gina, Matt Cornett’s EJ, Julia Lester’s Ashlyn, Dara Renee’s Kourtney and Frankie Rodriguez’s Carlos) as they put on a production of Frozen at summer camp. Still, it's nice that Rodrigo and Bassett are still in the mix and managing to contribute their musical talents to the proceedings.

There's a lot going on in the third season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which features Corbin Bleu playing a version of himself that's a “bit of an ass” and Hannah Montana’s Jason Earles as a camp counselor. If you’ve been a fan of High School Musical: The Musical - The Series from its early days in 2019, then you've watched Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett’s Nini and Ricky become the leads of a production of the High School Musical musical whilst showcasing their talents. Since she started on HSMTMTS, Rodrigo has become one of the most popular performers in music, between her mega-hits like “drivers license” and “Good 4 U.” Amid the show dropping its feelings-inducing Season 3 premiere, fans have wondered what would become of Nini, given Rodrigo's rising star. Well, yes, she's stepping back but will get a "meaningful sendoff." 

As previously announced, Olivia Rodrigo will no longer be a regular cast member in Season 3. Rodrigo has been named a “guest star” on the show, as actors like Matt Cornett and Frankie Rodriguez transition from being supporting characters to leads of the series. That being said, Rodrigo's Nini has an arc during this season of the Disney+ series. When CinemaBlend chatted with HSMTMTS creator Tim Federle, he spoke to Rodrigo’s role moving forward.  

As Tim Federle shared with us, they weren’t going to phase out Nini without an explanation. In fact, it seems that they never would have done Season 3 without the Grammy-winning performer. It my be hard for some fans to accept that Rodrigo is definitely moving away from her Disney era to become a full-time singer, yet it's still comforting to know that she'll receive a sendoff that's fitting for her character. 

During this latest season, Nini goes on a road trip with her moms, as many of her classmates go off to a theater camp called Camp Shallow Lake to put on a production of Frozen. At the camp, they meet High School Musical royalty in Corbin Bleu, who plays a version of himself that's a “bit of an ass.” It also features Disney alum Jason Earles (who spoke to us about a possible Hannah Montana revival) as a camp counselor, and Dancing with the Stars’ Jojo Siwa is also set to guest star later in the season. 

As Olivia Rodrigo moves on, seemingly after this season, HSMTMTS will allow more of its cast to shine and tell different stories in the process. The series is bursting with young talent, as Tim Federle shared and, this season, there’s even more bad blood as well as the East High kids meet some new talents at camp. 

The first two episodes of High School Musical: The Musical - The Series Season 3, “Happy Campers” and “Into the Unknown,” are currently available to stream with a Disney+ subscription. More episodes of HSMTMTS are coming to Disney+ on Wednesdays in August, and they'll run through mid-September.

While summer is halfway over, the break is just beginning for the Wildcats on Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The third season just had its premiere, following the group to a summer camp that includes a celebrity guest. Original HSM star Corbin Bleu appears in this season as himself, though a slightly different version where he's a bit is egotistical. But the actor was actually excited about playing an "ass."

In an interview with CinemaBlend’s own Sarah El-Mahmoud, Corbin Bleu spoke all about playing an “ass” in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. In the premiere episode, he was less than willing to help out with the camp’s musical. Instead he noted to Jason Earles’ camp director character that although he is directing the documentary about the show that will be on Disney+ (very meta), he is not going to spend his time directing the actual musical. And Bleu was excited about poking some fun at himself:

One would think that with someone appearing on a show as themselves, they would be themselves, so it was definitely a surprise, though funny, to see Corbin Bleu in a role fans would not expect. It should be interesting to see how it plays out in the rest of the season and how else Bleu will surprise fans.

Bleu also revealed that, like many shows and movies, not everything was in the script. Although he didn’t get into too many details about it, he did admit that there were some lines that were improvised, which even proved more how well of a jerk he can play when he’s very likely nice in real-life:

Corbin Bleu is the third High School Musical star to appear in the series, following both Kaycee Stroh and Lucas Grabeel, who appeared in the first season. While Grabeel guest starred as himself, Stroh actually played a member of the school board. Considering how much the original movie seres means to people, it was a pleasant surprise, regardless. 

Speaking of appearances, fans have been hoping that two more HSM stars will return to the halls of East High. Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron both recently visited the real East High in Salt Lake City, Utah, at different times, and Efron also expressed interest in returning to the HSM franchise. So perhaps this could be the start of something new? 

Meanwhile, with the third season officially underway on Disney+, HSMTMTS has already been renewed for a fourth season. The music and nostalgia will continue on, but whether Olivia Rodrigo will return is up in the air. Her character, Nini, has been downgraded to a guest role this season due to Rodrigo being so busy taking over the pop music world. So it’s unknown if that will stick for Season 4.

Recently, Disney+ rebooted High School Musical for this generation with a series starring Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett. And it has us wondering: could Hannah Montana return to young audiences with a reboot? 

Jason Earles, who played Hannah Montana’s older brother Jackson for five years on Disney Channel, makes his return to Disney for the third season of High School Musical: The Musical – The Series, which will be streaming with a Disney+ subscription this week. As he returns to his roots to play camp counselor Dewey Wood, CinemaBlend asked the actor his thoughts on his own Disney Channel show getting similar treatment. In his words: 

Count Jason Earles in on more Hannah Montana! He’s not alone either. In 2020, Miliey Cyrus herself shared that she would like to “resurrect” her iconic Disney Channel pop star “at some point." Last year, the TV show surpassed its 15-year anniversary, which led the actress to pen a letter to her character, saying the character has her “utmost gratitude” and “love.” 

As Jason Earles shared with us, the story of Hannah Montana still has a relevant message about figuring out who you are and finding your own voice against the noise of teenhood that could be rebooted into the present day. Could Disney Channel fans get the best of both worlds and receive a new Hannah Montana series someday?

If so, chances are Disney would find a new cast of young characters to embody the roles, with the possibility of actors like Jason Earles and Miley Cyrus making cameos or playing supporting roles. The High School Musical series created one of the biggest pop stars of today with Olivia Rodrigo and includes cameos of original cast, which will include Corbin Bleu this season, who is set to play himself. 

High School Musical’s Season 3 will follow its cast of high schoolers as they spend a summer at a theater camp putting on a production of Frozen. The Disney+ series will continue beyond that as well, with a confirmed fourth season coming after this one. Perhaps more original High School Musical actors and other Disney Channel actors will return to their roots too? Zac Efron has already shared his hopes to return to the franchise. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is returning in just a couple months, but ahead of catching back up with East High, Disney+ has already ordered a fourth season. Just don’t expect Olivia Rodrigo’s Nini to be the star of the series any longer. 

Disney+ announced that the High School Musical series will not only return this summer for Season 3, but an upcoming fourth season following it. However, Olivia Rodrigo is now listed among the “guest stars” in the cast and she’s not alone. Kate Reinders’ Miss Jenn, Larry Saperstein’s Big Red, and Joe Serafini’s Seb are also listed as guests on the upcoming season rather than being counted among the “stars” including Joshua Bassett, Sofia Wylie, Matt Cornett, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez, Saylor Bell Curda, and Adrian Lyles. 

Olivia Rodrigo has become one of the biggest new names in pop music between hits like “Good 4 U” and her recent Disney+ special. Her big break began on the High School Musical series back in 2019, and she even wrote original songs for the episodes. Her album Sour was released in spring of last year and remains among the most streamed albums worldwide on Spotify. Rodrigo is currently on her first tour, which will enter its European leg next month. With that in mind, it’s understandable that her schedule has shifted and she may not be able to film alongside her cast members, but why is more of the cast also scaling back their roles as well? 

What’s even more perplexing is there is also a section in the Disney+ release for “recurring guest stars,” which Aria Brooks, Liamani Segura, and Ben Stillwell find themselves on. It seems that Rodrigo, Saperstein, Serafini, and Reinders will have limited roles in the High School Musical series, and might only show up for a single episode in the upcoming Season 3. 

The third season will be set at a sleepaway camp in California, so that right there gives the series room to write out cast members by establishing that their characters couldn’t go to camp or have other pursuits for their summer vacations. Notably, the High School Musical series will feature original High School Musical cast member Corbin Bleu as himself. Can we get Zac Efron on too now that he said he’s interested in returning to the franchise, too? 

It looks like Joshua Bassett’s Ricky will remain the series’ big star, with Sofia Wylie’s Gina continuing to be a major character as well. Along with Rodrigo being pretty much out of the picture, it is curious to see Saperstein, who is Ricky’s best friend and boyfriend to Lester’s Ashlyn, along with Serafini’s Seb moving to the side after he and Frankie Rodriguez had a historic LGBTQ+ moment in the series as well. 

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 3 will premiere on July 27, with new episodes dropping weekly on Wednesdays with a Disney+ subscription. 

At a time when the conversation about the LGBTQ+ community and The Walt Disney Company is an especially hot topic, a new movie has hit Disney+ called Better Nate Than Ever. The musical comedy about a middle schooler who sneaks away from Pittsburgh to Broadway to audition for the big time brings some fun musical theatre energy to the platform, along with inviting a sweet storyline about a queer kid coming into his identity. As Better Nate Than Ever breaks some ground for the LGBTQ+ community in family entertainment, CinemaBlend spoke to writer/director Tim Federle about its pride-filled messages. 

Tim Federle’s collaboration with Disney+ began with his spinoff series for High School Musical, which brought about the breakout of Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett alongside their other talented young costars. During the second season of the show, it became the first to have a prominent gay romance and then same-sex kiss between Frankie Rodriguez and Joe Serafini’s Carlos and Sebastian. Looking back, Federle told us how that LGBTQ+ moment was received: 

It sounds like no amount of backlash compared to all the love Tim Federle and the cast of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series received for including a queer storyline. In turn, Federle has moved forward with another great character important to the community. Better Nate Than Ever is a semi-autobiographical story about Federle’s own journey from Pittsburgh to New York, where he’d ultimately find his people and be on Broadway himself. Federle continued with these words: 

When stories like the High School Musical series and Better Nate Than Ever get authentic about the different experiences one can have growing up, it can create a path for more empathy from others and allow for others who relate to feel more comfortable in their skin. Federle also shared that he had a “lot of freedom” to make the movie he wanted to after having the experience as a middle schooler like Nate who “didn’t have many examples” of himself on screen.

Last year belonged to Olivia Rodrigo as she started off her year with an all-time big hit in “drivers license” and rose to pop stardom with her punk moment in “good 4 u” ahead of the rollout of her massive first album, Sour. Following her entrance into the music industry in such a big way, Rodrigo presents her first era as an artist visually with the new Disney+ film, Driving Home 2 U and as a fan of the singer from day one, I had a lot of feelings while watching it. I was practically reliving my teen angst. 

Sour spoke for itself in a lot of ways when Olivia Rodrigo put out the album last spring. The debut album is about the downfalls of first love and teendom when the former doesn’t work out as you’d expect. It tells the story of devastating heartbreak and Rodrigo’s feelings and thoughts as she watches an ex (widely thought to be High School Musical: The Musical co-star Josh Bassett) move on with another girl. Now that Driving Home 2 U is available to watch with a Disney+ subscription, let’s get into how the special made me feel:  

Angst

First of all, Driving Home 2 U completely takes one into the headspace of being a teenager, which is often filled with dread, especially when it comes to dealing with big emotions for the first time in relationships. From the top of the Disney+ special, Olivia Rodrigo really takes you into her mindset while she was writing the record, and with the series of new performances of each song from the record, I could really feel the themes of the record more intensely than ever. A performance of “jealousy, jealousy” early in the movie shows that Rodrigo really knows how to deliver that punk-flair to soundtrack slamming your bedroom door for the drama. 

Moved

It didn’t take too long before I found myself feeling wistful and some waterworks at the back of my eyeballs when Olivia Rodrigo sang the songs on Sour. The singer opens the movie up with “happier” before going to “1 step forward, 3 steps back” in the beginning of the film, the latter being performed with Rodrigo alone in the back of a car as she strums on her guitar. “1 step forward” hits home some of the most stinging themes on the album about Rodrigo being pulled into confusion before it eventually goes sideways. I was especially moved to see how such an uncomfortable feeling can be weaved into a song as a way for the young singer to channel her feelings.  

Inspired

Soon after Olivia Rodrigo introduces her inspirations for the record, the movie takes its viewers on the journey of her first hit, “drivers license,” which would take her to big stages like The Brits and SNL to perform the hit. Driving Home 2 U does a flashback to Rodrigo plinking around on a keyboard to the song before it was as massive of a song as it is today. I was inspired by Rodrigo taking music she casually came up with in her room about a hard breakup into a huge moment in pop music. Remember when she was simply a talented breakout star in the High School Musical series? 

Insight

Driving Home 2 U also offers fans quite a bit of insight into the making of Sour and some of the decisions and feelings she had while writing the music and releasing them. For example, Rodrigo was very aware of the love triangle conversation she was perpetuating even before “deja vu” was released and led to fans rumoring that Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter were the subject of the tunes. Bassett was unfortunately the center of a lot of backlash and fan hate due to fans believing he was the one who broke Rodrigo’s heart so badly, and it’s clear in this special that Rodrigo had anxieties over this when rolling out her record. At the end of the day, divulging her personal experiences is part of being an artist, but it’s interesting to hear more about what it was like to bring the world into it with the release of her music.

Stunned

My absolute favorite moment of Driving Home 2 U happens over halfway through when her “good 4 u” performance unfolds. The singer brings an incredible new version of the hit, inspired by the likes of Paramore’s “Misery Business” when she sings the song with an orchestral arrangement. The version is absolutely epic and spine-chilling and shows how her music can rock through different arrangements. The new version of the breakup track is incredible and really shows that Rodrigo has come into her own musically at the age of 19. 

Sour

Olivia really struts her stuff later in the special as well when she performs a great rendition of her opening track “Brutal” in what looks to be a plane wreckage. In between learning about how the angry song came about, we also see some behind-the-scenes moments of Rodrigo really struggling with second-guessing herself and not being able to see how talented and incredible she is. Of course she’s a teenager and it’s relatable to go into a bit of imposter syndrome and such when becoming such a huge name in music, but I felt a little sour for her. One because it’s not easy to see someone so talented not believe in one’s self and two, because of how it can strike a chord when you see someone else having behaviors you do that you aren’t necessarily proud of. Together we’ll work on remembering and believing in our power, Olivia! 

Proud 

Coming out of Driving Home 2 U, the most prevalent feeling I had following the emotional rollercoaster of reliving the record through the special is how proud I am of Olivia Rodrigo as a fan. It’s clear the singer is just getting started and quite young in the middle of just big girl success. In the Disney+ movie she really shows off a particular and unique flair she brings to the world as a pop star and I immediately found myself looking at concert dates (of course they are sold out). 

The movie really brings excitement for Rodrigo as an artist as she continues to grow older. And as Olivia says in the movie, I too am looking forward to a time when she’s not quite as “sad” as she was while making Sour. Though she certainly took some bad feelings and made something beautiful out of it we can all share with her. 

2021 has been Olivia Rodrigo’s big breakout moment. The High School Musical series star opened up the year with her viral hit “drivers license,” which even made its way into an SNL skit, before releasing her angsty breakup tune “Good 4 U” over the summer along with her debut album, Sour. Olivia Rodrigo is now receiving a second wave of attention now, though. It was recently revealed that she added new songwriting credits and reportedly is now giving up millions of dollars in royalties to Paramore and Taylor Swift due to close similarities to her work on Sour. It all starts with Taylor Swift. Olivia Rodrigo talks all the time about being the “biggest” Swiftie in the whole world, thus the Grammy-winning singer is clear influence on her. Earlier this summer, Olivia Rodrigo retroactively gave Taylor Swift and co-writer Jack Antonoff writing credits on her hit single “deja vu” due to similarities to their song “Cruel Summer.” Prior to Sour’s release, Rodrigo also received approval to use the chords from Swift’s song “New Year’s Day” in “1 step forward, 3 steps back” to pay tribute to her favorite singer. Now, her highly popular hit, “Good 4 U” is also on the list, with Paramore as her muse. Here’s everything that we know:

The ‘Good 4 U’ TikTok Trend

Interestingly enough, the latest situation with “Good 4 U” has roots on the social media app TikTok. When Olivia Rodrigo’s song blew up, fans started to notice how much it reminded them of the 2007 Paramore song “Misery Business,” and it kicked off a huge trend that saw fans of Rodrigo reliving their emo phase.

Along with both “Good 4 U” and “Misery Business” sharing teen angst energy, the instrumentation is very similar throughout, as made obvious in this mashup of the two songs that went viral as well. Take a listen:

Comparing ‘Good 4 U’ And ‘Misery Business’

Olivia Rodrigo’s song is about an ex who looks a-ok after a breakup, even though she’s still going through it. The singer took on the persona of a cheerleader, who sets her room on fire in a music video that also became a massive hit:

Meanwhile, “Misery Business" now has a direct influence on Olivia Rodrigo's song. This is thanks to the official songwriting credit given to its lead singer/songwriter Hayley Williams and former Paramore songwriter/band member Josh Farro. The music videos for the songs also share similarities through cheerleaders and the angles present when Hayley holds onto the camera. And this is all on top of the two songs sounding very similar:

Back in 2018, Williams (28 at the time) shared that she no longer relates to the song “Misery Business” and that the band plans to retire the hit from their live shows due to some of the content in the song being deemed “anti-feminist.”

How Much Money Olivia Rodrigo Reportedly Gave Up To Paramore

With all that in mind, Olivia Rodrigo is now said to have already given up $2.4 million dollars in global publishing royalties for “Good 4 U,” thanks to connections to “Misery Business.” The cash will be shared between Hayley Williams and Josh Farro. According to Billboard, the Paramore songwriters will be making just as much as Rodrigo and her co-writer Dan Nigro.

The number is an estimation based on streaming, sales, airplay, licensing and so forth and the song will continue to make money for both Rodrigo and Paramore as the song remains a chart-topper. It's interesting to see how all of this has gone down, but it's clear that Rodrigo definitely has some iconic influences under her belt that will now share her success.

At the end of the first season of High School Musical: The Musical - The Series, our hearts fluttered with joy over Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett’s Nini and Ricky professing their feelings for one another and becoming a couple again after a season of will-they-won’t-they tension. But as Season 2 has unfolded this summer, the teen relationship has been taking a turn for the worse. Where do they go from here? Showrunner Tim Federle shared some insight.

Now that we’ve caught this week’s Season 2 finale, called “Second Chances,” it looks like Ricky and Nini’s relationship is going to continue to diverge onto separate paths and I’m not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, their relationship was super cute with roots in being childhood best friends. On the other hand, it’s become clear that they are starting to grow apart. I’m not sure who to root for anymore or where the show will go from here without the couple.

High School Musical’s showrunner Tim Federle opened up about the star couple to ET Online and what he's planning for Ricky and Nini. Here’s what he said:

It sounds like Tim Federle hasn’t made up his mind about where Ricky and Nini will be whenever the series has its curtain call yet. He’s taking it season by season, and after the second one, Ricky could be starting a new fling following his phone call to Lily, and Nini is making bigger strides in her career with a connection in Jordan Fisher’s music producer character Jamie. The HSMTMTS showrunner also said this:

It’ll be especially interesting how HSMTMTS decides to handle Ricky and Nini given all the buzz Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett’s alleged relationship and break up has gotten over the past year. Fans believe the actors met on the set of the series and dated for a time until things ended between them. Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album Sour has also become linked to their rumored relationship since her breakout song “drivers license” went viral.

As the actors move on in their own lives and level up in their solo careers, it might make sense for HSMTMTS to go in a similar direction, but at the same time there could be potential for the couple on the show to reignite their flame after they’ve explored their own paths. We’ll have to wait to tune in and see!

The stars of the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series have blown up this past year following the first season. Olivia Rodrigo is riding a rollercoaster into pop stardom with her chart-topping album Sour and her co-star Joshua Bassett has been in the limelight as well. And the actor has shared a major emergency that happened to him in the midst of it all.

It is rumored that Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett once dated and her hit music is all about the heartbreak between them. When Bassett was recently asked about the viral song he has been linked to (especially with the drop of his name in an SNL skit featuring the song), he didn’t get into the controversy, but he did share that two days after the song was released he “started getting very ill.”

The actor shared to GQ Magazine that at first he thought he had food poisoning, but then the pain became “unimaginable” leading up to the day when his own single “Lie Lie Lie” hit streaming platforms. This past week, the number one album across the U.S. has been 18-year-old Olivia Rodrigo’s debut record Sour. The singer and actress once shared a song she had made about Edward and Bella when she had writer’s block. Since releasing Sour, it sounds like she’s been channeling Team Jacob much more.

Many of the lyrics for Sour revolve around a breakup that involved Olivia Rodrigo’s ex moving on fast and leaving her in the dust. The sad situation inspired some great jams like “good 4 u,” “deja vu” and, of course, “drivers license.” But when it comes to that Twilight song some of her fans were hoping for, here’s what she said on Twitter:

During a fan Q&A, a fan asked if there was a song that Twilight’s core couple might enjoy. Given the themes in the record, she couldn’t pick one out for the vampire couple, but she did pick “traitor” for Jacob Black. And if you give it a listen, it could definitely pass off as a tune about the werewolf’s perspective. Check it out:

I mean, come on, it starts with “brown guilty eyes.” If that’s not Jacob Black, what is? If you flip some of the pronouns, it’s the perfect theme song for Taylor Lautner’s character once Bella runs back to Edward Cullen at the end of New Moon. As you’ll remember, Bella goes through a terrible breakup in the second installment and leans on Jacob for most of the storyline. She even learns of Jacob’s secret clan who protect her from Laurent and Victoria’s return.

Bella and Jacob weren’t exactly an item when Edward came back into town, but the characters were definitely getting closer when Bella brushes it all off and returns to her vampire boyfriend. Jacob is also a pretty “sour” character in general, so Olivia Rodrigo is spot on. I’m sure someday we’ll be treated to a more tender record with the likeness of Edward and Bella, but with Sour we get pure angst.

Yeah, this checks out too. The downbeat song is all about Olivia trying hard to be enough for her S.O, which would also be perfect for Bella during her New Moon breakup. And as far as Edward Cullen goes, a fan jumped in with a great pick. Of all the angst on Sour, “brutal” is the angstiest, so of course it has to go to Edward Cullen. The vampire would totally head bump to the lyrics “I’m so sick of seventeen,” since you know... he has been that age for like a hundred years.

It's a bit disheartening to always see my friends turn their heads away because it doesn't have the original cast of High School Musical, and I can't take it any longer. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is so much more than that, from talented young actors like Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo shining, to some seriously awesome new songs. Here are six reasons why you should give the show a chance.

The Different Takes On The Original Characters Are A Welcomed Change In HSM: The Musical: The Series

Before you ask, no, Troy, Gabriella, and everyone else are not in this. Because again, this isn’t a continuation of the original series. This is a show where High School Musical exists in movie form, and it follows the story of the students who A) go to the actual school High School Musical was filmed in and B) love the movies and want to put on the musical at their school. But, in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, we get brand new characters who feel even more relatable and it's a welcome change.

We have Nini, a musical theater enthusiast with a heart of gold and the voice of an angel. We have Ricky, a young man who is going through some personal issues both at home and at school. We even have a male Sharpay, in the form of Seb, and he kills it. It’s a welcome change to the typical production of High School Musical.

The Story In HSM: The Musical: The Series Doesn’t Completely Revolve Around The Musical

While the musical is a big part of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, it’s not the entire focus. We get a good look into the lives of each of these students, and really come to care about them.

Ricky is facing his own family problems back at home. The young choreographer, Carlos, is struggling to fit in and finds his home in the theater. Nini has an amazing voice but doubts herself and doesn’t know if she’ll make it big. Even the new drama teacher who decides to put on the musical has her own demons. While High School Musical felt like it was directed at younger children and teenagers, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series feels like it’ll connect with anyone.

The Song Covers Are Actually Really Good In HSM: The Musical: The Series

Okay, I mean, no one can ever beat Zac Efron’s version of “Bet On It” – but they come pretty dang close in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. I mean, how can we not when we have some fantastic voices in the cast, like Olivia Rodrigo as Nini. We all know how popular “Driver’s License” got, and she does not hold back her singing talents in this, either.

She’s not the only performer in this ensemble cast. Everyone’s voices combined are amazing, and the covers aren’t cringy or bad – they’re genuinely really good, and you’ll find yourself listening to them unironically more than the originals. Just for an example, listen to the cover of “Breaking Free.” Nini and Ricky’s voices meld so well, I almost like it more than Troy and Gabriella.

HSM: The Musical: The Series Has Great Original Songs As Well

Did you ever think Ms. Darbus would have an original song? No? Well High School Musical: The Musical: The Series handles that amazingly well. The original songs in this show are freaking incredible. Not only are they catchy and make you want to dance, but the voices behind them are also fantastic. I could listen to Olivia Rodrigo and Julia Lester, who plays Ashlyn Caswell in the show, sing “Wondering” all day.

Every character really has a chance to shine, but some of the original songs really make them stand out. “Born To Be Brave” is a bop, “Truth, Justice, and Songs in Our Key” is empowering, and everything else flows so well. I mean, Lucas Grabeel, the man behind the original Ryan in High School Musical, even has an original song in this – it can’t get better.

The Comedy In HSM: The Musical: The Series Will Remind You Of Your Favorite Sitcoms

I know that this is a big reason that at least my friends have been holding back watching the show, so it could be your reason as well. A lot of Disney Channel shows are very campy and kind of meh in some of their comedic scenes – trust me, I grew up watching Wizards of Waverly Place and Hannah Montana. But High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is so much better than some Disney Channel shows.

When I watch this series, I instantly think of classic sitcoms like Modern Family. There’s no laugh track, a lot of deadpan comedy, and the delivery of these jokes is masterful for actors who are quite young. I mean, Carlos is one of the funniest characters in this and his burns will have you snorting laughter. They even have confessionals to the camera – it’s like The Office but in high school, but with musical numbers, as well.

The High School Relationships And Drama Aren’t Campy In HSM: The Musical: The Series

One of my biggest pet peeves about a lot of Disney Channel TV shows is that the relationships never felt real or serious and were made up entirely for laughs. There were only ever serious ones like Alex and Mason from Wizards of Waverly Place once in a blue moon during the show’s time span. However, with the relationships in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, we get into the seriousness of relationships quite quickly.

Without revealing too much, one of the opening issues of this show is when a boyfriend doesn’t say “I love you” to his girlfriend over the summer, creating a whirlwind effect. Another deals with the possibility of lying. Some are purely wholesome and sweet to watch develop over time, with affections showing up through several episodes before that big kiss. None of it feels rushed or campy or cringy. They feel authentic, like how a relationship is supposed to feel.

I don’t know exactly how much more you'll need to convince you to watch High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. All I can say is that it will most certainly be on my 2021 Summer TV schedule because it’s a ton of fun, with a lot of laughs and a lot of great music. Is it the original High School Musical series? No, but I don’t believe it needs to be.

If Zac Efron’s “Bet On It” solo dance on a golf course in High School Musical 2 doesn’t live in your head rent free, did you even grow up in Disney Channel’s heyday? Nearly 15 years later, the iconic moment has been memed, gif-ed in every which way. And in Friday’s Season 2 premiere of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Joshua Bassett did a major callback to the number.

After the first season took on the original High School Musical songs, it was only natural to expect the cast to move to the 2007 sequel. There are so many memorable numbers from the summer movie, between Sharpay’s “Fabulous,” the much discussed “I Don’t Dance” scene and Vanessa Hudgens’ dramatic “Gotta Go My Own Way” song. Although the episode ends with Miss Jenn changing plans to Beauty and the Beast so they can compete in a musical competition, the cast did get to dabble in High School Musical 2.

Joshua Bassett has a fun moment in the premiere where he goes for it and does the “Bet On It” song for Big Red in his room. It’s not on a green field, but he definitely recreates some of the big moves from the movie. When CinemaBlend spoke to Bassett, he talked to us about the secret to finding that “Bet On It” energy:

As it turns out, it takes a ton of stamina to pull off the “Bet On It” dance and Joshua Bassett trained for the sequence on a treadmill and memorized the video, likely contributing a bit to the YouTube video that has over 15 million views. Check out the sequence:

This might be the best moment to come out of High School Musical now that I think about it. It’s part an interpretive song-and-dance to go with Zac Efron’s Troy Bolton in his journey midway through the Disney franchise and part hype video for anyone who needs an energy boost before a big event. All you have to do is believe! Plus, if Efron totally going for it in a series of empty fields and plains doesn’t get you excited for the day, what will?

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series continues this Friday on Disney+ alongside some exciting new May releases coming to the streaming service this month.

It’s been a whirlwind 2021 for 18-year-old Olivia Rodrigo since she released her hit single “drivers license” to a record-breaking debut. It was a huge hit almost immediately, even inspiring a viral Saturday Night Live sketch as well. But it’s on Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series that Rodrigo first made her name in music with fellow songwriter Joshua Bassett. Now, the series is set to premiere its second season this week.

For the 2019 first season, both Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett penned original music for the TV show, with Rodrigo writing the ballad “All I Want” for her character and the pair writing their duet “Just For A Moment” together for the season finale. Ahead of Season 2, CinemaBlend asked Bassett if they wrote any new songs this time around. His answer:

Look out for Joshua Bassett’s sweet original song that has Ricky serenading to Olivia Rodrigo’s Nini in the season premiere coming this Friday and a new song from Rodrigo later in the season. Rodrigo’s highly-anticipated full-length album Sour is also set to come out next Friday, but in the meantime the teen just traveled to England to perform “drivers license” at the BRIT Awards with the likes of Taylor Swift and Harry Styles in the audience. 10. A Billion Sorrys - Episode 3, The Wonderstudies

Sorry, EJ but this one wasn’t it and we all knew it. Matt Cornett gets to sing an original song called “A Billion Sorrys” early in the series to his cousin Ashlyn when he invades his girlfriend Nini’s personal space by checking up on her phone. In order to get out of the doghouse, he makes up a boyband-like track about how sorry he is, but he has it all wrong. It’s supposed to come across as bad and cliché as he stumbles through dance moves and thus here it is on the bottom spot.

9. Born To Be Brave - Episode 5, Homecoming

Now I love an empowering jam, and “Born To Be Brave” definitely gives Dara Renee some time to shine as a singer in the first season with not enough Kourtney. This isn’t a bad song, the beauty of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is the lack of duds but it is a particularly generic moment for the series. It’s a fun “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” song during East High’s Homecoming episode, but Kelly Clarkson and Pink! seemed to have already written songs like this a few times over.

8. Role Of A Lifetime - Episode 8, The Tech Rehearsal

The Disney+ series paid tribute to its roots late in the season with a surprise cameo from Ryan Evans’ actor Lucas Grabeel. The actor returned for a dream sequence for Miss Jenn when she needed a pep talk of sorts. “Role of a Lifetime” is very much a musical theatre jam that feels like the kind of song you’d hear a lead sing just before a show’s climax. It’s littered with fun references and gave the 36-year-old actor a chance to return to his roots. Ultimately though, the series is very much the new cast’s show.

7. Truth, Justice and Songs in Our Key - Episode 6, What Team?

Midway through the season, the East High drama students come together to perform an original song to bail Miss Jenn out once some of her shady activities are made known by the school. They come in dancing and singing “Truth, Justice and Songs in Our Key” complete with choreography and attitude to show their love for their drama teacher when the show they are working on gets threatened by the roadblock. It’s a catchy tune that leaves room for each student to shine, but I’ll admit, I kind of forgot this song existed.

6. I Think I Kinda, You Know (Ricky Version) - Episode 1, The Auditions

The heart of Season 1 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series was undeniably Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo’s Ricky and Nini and that much was clear to us early on. In the pilot episode of the Disney+ show, Ricky crashes the High School Musical auditions to try and win Nini back through song, using her own love song to him. The moment makes use of Bassett’s guitar skills while adding some major tension between the young exes. The song scores Ricky a place as Troy in the school production!

5. I Think I Kinda, You Know (Nini Version) - Episode 1, The Auditions

Although Ricky means well with his rendition, Olivia Rodrigo’s Nini sings her own song “I Think I Kinda, You Know” best in the early few minutes of the series when she shows then boyfriend Ricky the song after posting it on her social media to pronounce her love for Ricky. It’s a sweet moment that catches us up on Ricky and Nini’s cute relationship before they break up. As you’ll remember, when Ricky hears “I love you” from Nini in the song, he freezes up and freaks out, causing the sharp end to their relationship.

4. Out Of The Old - Episode 7, Thanksgiving

“Out of the Old” is one of the few songs in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series that ends up playing as a soundtrack moment to the show rather than a song-and-dance moment, but works really effectively in its case. It comes at an important time in the series when a lot of the characters are dealing with crossroads that they are about to face. Olivia Rodrigo sings a poppy song of anticipation as her character Nini makes the decision to apply for the actor’s conservatory in Colorado. It’s an earworm that isn’t quick to tire.

3. All I Want - Episode 4, Blocking

Before Olivia Rodrigo wrote one of this year’s biggest pop hits “Drivers License,” Disney allowed her to try her hand at songwriting for the High School Musical series and it is one of the best additions to the show. “All I Want” is an emotional track that describes Nini’s feelings on her difficult breakup with Ricky. She sings of wanting a “love that lasts” but feeling short sighted. It’s an intimate ballad about love lost, but more memorably turns the narrative over to how all she has is herself “at the end of the day” and her journey to let that be ok over leaning solely on boyfriends.

2. Wondering - Episode 2, The Read-Through

I don’t know about you, but this was the moment when I went all in on the High School Musical series and realized how special it was. When Nini and Ashlyn belt out "Wondering" at the piano in the second episode, it never ceases to give me chills. The talent of these young women are on full display here as they sing an emotional and sincere song about choosing between two things, or “wondering” if you’re making the right decision. It’s the perfect song for teens, at a time in our lives when the right way forward may not always be clear. It’s a gut punch of a track that proves that this cast is not messing around with the big vocal moments.

1. Just For a Moment - Episode 9, Opening Night

As alluded earlier, Ricky and Nini are the heart of Season 1, thus it is only natural for the best song in the series to be their duet that plays during the emotional finale. “Just For a Moment” was written by Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett as well prior to each artist branching out with their own personal musical projects. The song is the perfect upbeat love song for the pair as they make amends during the last episode of the season in the middle of a tumultuous production of High School Musical. It surely puts a smile on fans' faces and plays to the actors’ strengths, between their vocals, unique chemistry and sweetness they have created together with Ricky and Nini.

May is usually when the theatrical slate heats up and the big movies of the year start to come out. However, since we're still dealing with the insanity that is the global pandemic, we're not quite there yet. However, luckily we have streaming services like Disney+ and May is a very strong month for the service, assuming of course, you're willing to shell out a few extra bucks for the month's big release.

May starts off with May the Fourth, and Disney+ has something special for Star Wars fans this year on the official Star Wars holiday, in the form of the premiere of The Bad Batch, the new animated series that follows the events of The Clone Wars, from Dave Filoni and company. The special Tuesday premiere is an extra long episode, and then we'll get new episodes every Friday as is normal for Disney+ series.

Early May will also bring us a pair of Fox/Marvel titles in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and X-Men: The Last Stand. We'll also get the premiere of Season 2 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, as well as new episodes of other Disney+ original series like Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and Big Shot.

However, the big Disney+ release for the month comes in the form of Cruella. The movie will get a day-and-date theatrical release as well, but will be available as a Premiere Access title on Disney+, so if you'd rather stay home, you can spend an additional $30 to pick up the origin story of the 101 Dalmatians villain. One other smaller release, but one worthy of note, is the second season of Bluey, which is a hilarious series of animated shorts that are especially funny if you've got kids, but probably works even if you don't.

Disney Channel actress Olivia Rodrigo has taken TikTok and even SNL by storm with her hit “Driver’s License” single, as well as the more recent “Deja Vu.” In her emotional songs, she sings candidly about her love life and the heartbreak she has experienced. The virality and popularity of her songs have of course resulted in her personal life being front and center in the public eye, and the actress/singer/songwriter has shared quite the unexpected reaction to the new experience she is having.

In an interview for Elle Magazine, Olivia Rodrigo says she actually loves part of having her personal life exposed for all to see. Here it is in her own words:

While it’s awesome she has this outlook on her new viral fame (because she really has no choice now), her optimistic view is not one shared by all other celebrities. It's worth noting that her celebrity status above Disney Channel and Disney+ star is relatively new. Her “Driver’s License” hit was only released at the beginning of this year.

Olivia Rodrigo’s Taylor Swift-esque lyrics and previous Disney fame have left her personal life wide open for the interpretation of fans - and that’s just what they did! Fans listened to Rodrigo’s songs and put the pieces together from her other celebrity connections to figure out just who she was talking about in her songs, which are ex Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter, who are both also Disney Channel stars.

If Olivia Rodrigo continues on the same path as, say, Taylor Swift, she may feel differently if she gains the reputation of wearing her heart on her sleeve. Swift has been under fire by some for years for using her breakups as a means to profit.

Olivia Rodrigo is currently still part of the Disney+ original High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as one of the main characters. The series is about to start its second season, which premieres next month. Rodrigo’s viral fame for “Driver’s License” likely won't hurt the show, with Rodrigo's new star power potentially attracting new viewers to the Disney streaming service.

As the star of a Disney show going into its second season, Olivia Rodrigo’s time in the public eye seems to be just in the beginning stages. This is good news for her, since she seems to love the vulnerability and openness it brings to her life. Her music career will only keep gaining more success if she keeps going on her current path, but you can see her again on the small screen in the not-too-distant future. Season 2 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series premieres on Friday, May 14 at 12:01 a.m. PT on Disney+.

When Disney+ first launched in 2019, the studio came out singing “A Start of Something New” for its High School Musical franchise with a reboot series for the popular Disney Channel phenomenon. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series successfully captured our hearts with its new cast lead by Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett, who saw sparks flying in the first season. The second season is approaching soon, and a new trailer is giving us an idea about what to expect next for Ricky and Nini.

Ahead of the Season 2 premiere, it looks like things are going to get more complicated for the East High drama students. The new trailer shows the “drivers license” singer getting into the Youth Actors Conservatory, as we learned at the end of Season 1, and Nini and Ricky are trying for a long distance. But, wait? Someone else is trying to steal the attention of Ricky as the East High students get ready for their spring musical, Beauty and the Beast.

The High School Musical series trailer starts off with Miss Jenn running into a new character played by Dancing With The Stars’ Derek Hough, who looks like an old crush of hers by the looks of her expression. Hough’s Zack is a drama teacher like she is and directing The Little Mermaid musical for North High and entering it into the Alan Menken awards for high school theatre. After feeling a bit threatened by Zack calling her students “adorable,” she decides to enter the competition with Beauty and the Beast.

As the stakes get higher for the Wildcats, Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett’s romance is being tested as they are placed physically apart by Nini’s new opportunity. Nini is feeling conflicted between following her dreams and being away from her boyfriend, but they are committed to FaceTiming every morning. Amidst their practice for the competition, they seem to meet their rivals from North High, one of which is Olivia Rose Keegan’s Lily.

Later in the trailer, there is a confrontation between Lily and Ricky that has Keegan’s character telling Joshua Bassett’s to let her know if he’s looking for a “girlfriend” who is not looking for as much space that Olivia Rodrigo’s character may need from him. Love triangle alert! Queue “drivers license,” specifically with Olivia Rodrigo’s radio hit belting out those cutting lyrics “you’re probably with that blonde girl,” because well... the shoe fits.

Aside from some cutthroat drama ahead for these theatre students, it looks like the Disney+ series will be littered with show stopping music numbers from the cast. And we can’t wait to see what Derek Hough brings to the series. Obviously he’ll be showing off the incredible moves that we all know and love from his Dancing With The Stars fame. The first episode of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is premiering on Disney+ on May 14. While we wait, check out what is new to the platform this month here on CinemaBlend.

While Marvel's mind-blowing psycho-drama WandaVision may be ending in early March, Disney+ definitely still has a ton of original content on the way that will keep audiences busy and entertained throughout the summer. While we already knew that March's two marquee shows would be the MCU's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the family-friendly sequel series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, but now the streaming service has announced most of the big premieres from April through July, including Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Loki, the Turner & Hooch continuation and more!

Let's break down all the newly revealed release dates in sequential order, starting off with the next big TV show for Full House and You vet John Stamos.

Big Shot - April 16

With Fuller House having ended on Netflix in 2020, John Stamos set up his next return to streaming television with the Disney+ family comedy Big Shot. In it, Stamos plays an ousted NCAA basketball coach who heads into completely unfamiliar territory as a coach at an all-girls high school, where he'll learn how to connect with his team not just as players, but as people. (I'm hoping for a "don't touch the hair" joke within the first three minutes.) After facing several COVID-related delays, Big Shot will debut on Disney+ on Friday, April 16.

As Star Wars fans await the next entry in the live-action universe, The Book of Boba Fett, we can now get ready to see the official follow-up to The Clone Wars in Star Wars: The Bad Batch. With Dee Bradley Baker and Ming-Na Wen as two of the leads, the animated series will be a more action-oriented series than previous Star Wars 'toons, and fans can look forward to the mayhem kicking off on the most relevant day possible: Tuesday, May 4, also known as Star Wars Day. After that, The Bad Batch will be shifting over to Friday mornings for the remainder of the season.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 2 - May 14

Boasting one of the most amusing titles in all of television, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series will return to Disney+ for more...musical...high school...series-ness...on Friday, May 14. Get ready to watch East High's Wildcats taking on their rivals at North High, and note that the season will feature some brand new solos crafted by stars Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett.

Loki - June 11

Once The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is completed, Disney+ will be shifting its Marvel focus back to more villainous waters with Tom Hiddleston's time-shifting Loki. Kevin Feige & Co. are keeping details close to the vest for Loki, save for the notion that it takes place post-Endgame, but we now know that the morally wavering character will return to audiences on Friday, June 11, and with Owen Wilson joining the fun for his first big TV role.

Zenimation Season 2 - June 11

Balancing the madcap mayhem of Loki and The Bad Batch, Disney+ will be unleashing the second season of what is arguably TV's most calming series, Zenimation, which showcases dialogue-free and visually splendid moments from its 80-year history, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to the recent release Raya and the Last Dragon. Season 2 of Zenimation will drop its first episode on Friday, June 11.

The Mysterious Benedict Society - June 25

One of Disney+'s only upcoming releases that isn't tied to some other project from the company's legacy works, The Mysterious Benedict Society is instead based on the best-selling YA novel of the same name, and stars such awesome stars as Arrested Development's Tony Hale, Bob's Burgers' Kristen Schaal, The Walking Dead's Ryan Hurst and more. The boarding school's nefarious plotting will start up on Friday, June 25.

Monsters At Work - July 2

A project that hasn't seen much coverage since it was first announced as part of Disney+'s unveiling, the Monsters Inc. follow-up Monsters at Work will bring Billy Crystal's Mike Wazowski and John Goodman's Sully Sullivan back to audiences for a series that will follow the story of Tylor Tuskmon (voiced by Superstore's Ben Feldman) as he enters the workforce at Monsters, Incorporated. Fan can check out all the monsterriffic fun on Friday, July 2.

Turner & Hooch - July 16

The follow-up to the well-received 1989 caper of the same name, Disney+'s Turner & Hooch will follow established Disney star Josh Peck as U.S. Marshal Scott Turner, the son of Tom Hanks' character in the film. (Also worth noting is that five different French Mastiff dogs were used to play Hooch.) Fans can check out the show, which also stars The Arrangement's Carra Patterson, when it makes its streaming debut on Friday, July 16.

Chip 'N' Dale: Park Life - July 23

Similar to how the core Mickey Mouse characters have been revitalized in short-form for The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse (and its Mickey Mouse predecessor), Disney is giving its troublemaking chipmunks time to shine in their own standalone series. To be expected, fans can expect to see a slew of other Disney characters joining the fun when Chip 'N' Dale: Park Life debuts on Disney+ on Friday, July 23.
