Actor Tom Cruise has the reputation of advocating for a certain class of movies where what we see on screen is done for real. So of course he’s been supporting The Odyssey. The actor dropped by NYC’s Lincoln Square on opening weekend to see it himself, and had big praise for Chris Nolan, the cast and crew. But he also had thoughts on the Dune: Part Three sneak peek playing before IMAX screenings, as well.

Tom Cruise rented out a private showing of The Odyssey for himself and his team. He also apparently ended up inviting some of the employees of the AMC to join him. After an employee shared the “magical” experience, one fan had to ask them if Cruise had thoughts on the Dune: Part Three sneak peek. Here’s what reportedly happened:

In the front of IMAX screenings of The Odyssey, movie fans are treated to the prologue to Dune: Part Three, and Tom Cruise was no exception. Cruise was geeking out over the sequence that involves the Fremen getting caught in a visceral battle after feeling the rain for the first time. And apparently he even called one of the movie’s producers to congratulate them on a job well done. How cool.

Tom Cruise has certainly been vocal about his love of the Dune franchise before. He sent Chalamet “the most wonderfully inspiring email” that even included a Rolodex of experts he might need for additional stunt training. Per Chalamet’s recounting of the email to GQ, Cruise let him know that “nobody” would hold him to the Old Hollywood standard. And it was up to him to do so.

Dune: Part Three is set to round out Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy based on Frank Herbert’s books. It will follow a super unsettling Paul Atreides 17 years after the previous film. After Paul betrayed Zendaya’s Chani in Part Two and rose as the Lisan al-Gaib, it looks like the two become enemies. All the while, Robert Pattinson’s Scytale executes a plot to dethrone Paul.

It’s not only one of the most exciting upcoming book-to-screen adaptations, it could be the biggest box office weekend of the year. The movie shares a release date with Avengers: Doomsday in a movie event already calling itself Dunesday. We definitely expect Tom Cruise to be first in line after these alleged comments about Part Three.

Flashback to 2021, and you couldn't find a bigger hater of the Snyderverse than me. Hell, I even danced on its grave when we received word that it was finally over.

However, flash-forward (DC pun not intended) to 2026, and I've actually come around on the failed DCEU. Maybe it's because I wasn't in love with James Gunn's Superman, or perhaps it’s because I have no interest whatsoever in Supergirl (and apparently, I'm not alone), but I've been giving Zack Snyder's DC movies another chance recently, and oh, man. I think I owe Zack Snyder yet ANOTHER apology.

You see, I already apologized for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and after rewatching the four hour long Zack Snyder's Justice League, I have to apologize again, because this movie is amazing. Here's why.

I Originally Thought This Movie Was Way Too Long. But Now, It Feels Just Right When It Comes To Pacing

You want to know what's crazy? Not too long ago, I rewatched Joss Whedon's version of Justice League, which is only two hours long, and it's so bad that it actually feels LONGER than Snyder's version, which is literally double the runtime. I think this is because Whedon's Justice League feels aimless and dull, whereas Snyder's version has direction and vision. And look, no offense to Whedon, as he was given the impossible task of reshooting aspects of Snyder's movie into something feasible for the big screen, but his version just does not work.

However, after rewatching Zack Snyder's Justice League, I am in awe at how he was able to take all of these characters and still have it all make sense. For example, in his version, Batman and Wonder Woman's quest to assemble a team really feels cohesive and organic, whereas in Whedon’s version, it all feels like a hurried mess, which is strange because it also feels plodding.

We get more backstory for all of the characters in Snyder’s version, as well as a true villain in Darkseid, who I'll get into later. Snyder's version is also (surprise, surprise) way darker in tone than Whedon's version, which is also something I now appreciate over the more upbeat Superman from James Gunn.

Honestly, it's really weird that all of the things that I once hated about the Snyderverse – the overseriousness, the darker tone, etc – I now view as pluses. However, I think there's one reason in particular why I love this movie now.

Cyborg's Story Is The Heart Of This Movie

One character who I always thought never got his time to shine when it came to the Snyderverse was Cyborg. Played by Ray Fisher, you could tell that he had a bigger role in Whedon's Justice League, but there was just something…missing.

In Zack Snyder's Justice League, however, almost the entire plot hinges on Cyborg’s role in the story. The fact that his role was truncated so much in Whedon’s version just goes to show you why that film felt like such a mess, because Victor Stone's (Cyborg) role is absolutely vital in Snyder's cut.

Stone's father, Silas (Joe Morton), is kidnapped, and Cyborg joins the team. He was a former athlete and had to be reconstructed after a horrible car accident, so his journey as a broken man to one of the saviors of the world is thoughtful and surprisingly heartfelt.

Also, being that Cyborg has such a connection to this film's Macguffin in the Mother Boxes, he’s essentially the most important character in the entire film, and I really appreciate that when watching this a second time.

I Also Find All Of The Characters-Even The Flash-To Be Interesting In This Film

You know, when I first saw Zack Snyder's Justice League, I still very much loathed all of the scenes involving Ezra Miller's The Flash. Upon a second viewing, I find that I actually like him, as well as pretty much every other member of the Justice League this time around. It might be because I, like others, actually enjoyed the eventual Flash movie that came out in 2023 (I even wrote about how it annoyed me that it didn't do better at the box office).

The Flash is incredibly important in this film. When the world starts to be destroyed, The Flash has to reverse the flow of time using the Speed Force, which allows Superman (Henry Cavill) and Cyborg to get the job done.

And, what about Aquaman? I liked Jason Momoa's first Aquaman movie - to a certain extent - but I found him super annoying in Justice League. However, I guess adding more screen time for him makes him more interesting this time around. I also think that learning more about the other metahumans and the Atlanteans makes him feel more at home here.

Not only that, but this movie has freaking Martian Manhunter (Harry Lennix) in it. I mean, it's at the end, and it's pretty much just a cameo, but at least he's here. What's not to love?

I Also Love This Version Of Darkseid

I know I keep harping on Joss Whedon's Justice League, but a big reason why I feel that movie failed was that its main antagonist, Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds), was super lame. It's just that he didn't seem like a worthy opponent for the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman, or The Flash.

In Zack Snyder's Justice League…well, he's still pretty lame, but much better since you don't feel like he's the REAL final boss. The main boss would be Ray Porter's Darkseid, who is a way more terrifying villain and an existential threat to humanity.

Darkseid is all about that Anti-Life Equation, and we learn that he's been a threat to Earth for millennia, what with the Old Gods waging war against him to prevent him from taking over the planet. All of this backstory really elevates the danger he presents, making him feel like a truly worthy adversary.

Unfortunately, since this was pretty much the end of the DCEU, we never got to see Darkseid get his own movie where he got to be the central villain, but I really appreciate what we got in this movie. He’s absolutely horrifying.

In The End, The Further We Get Away From The Snyderverse, The More I Find That I Miss It

When looking at the upcoming slate of DC films (and TV–let's not forget about TV), I think there's a lot to look forward to (Especially when it comes to Clayface, which I can't wait for!) Yet…I kind of now miss the Snyderverse.

I don't know what it is. It might be because I used to pledge allegiance to the MCU, and I think I viewed the DCEU as a pathetic alternative. After getting off the Marvel hype train quite a while ago, I've since been reevaluating the Snyderverse, and I think I had it all wrong.

Was it too dark and broody? Maybe, but upon reflection, it was actually a novel alternative to the overly cheery MCU. I now find that I get nothing out of movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Guardians of the Galaxy upon a rewatch, and I view them more as artifacts than anything else.

Movies like Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Batman v. Superman? They just seem to get better with age. So, if you happen to be reading this, Mr. Snyder. I’m sorry! Your fans were right all along, and I’m happy that the powers that be eventually RELEASED THE SNYDER CUT!

The 2026 movie schedule has already had some bangers, but man, I think I just found my official most-anticipated of the bunch for the second half of the year now that we have a fresh trailer for Dune: Part Three We just got the most epic look at Denis Villeneuve's trilogy finale yet, and it has me thinking about what dark arc is on the horizon for Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. Thankfully, the actor himself shed some light on what’s coming.

CinemaBlend attended Dune: Part 3’s global fan event at the AMC Burbank in Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday morning. We were among the first to see the movie’s new trailer along with witnessing an exclusive conversation between Villeneuve and Timothée Chalamet. Check out the trailer here:

Y’all, the chills I had seeing this in IMAX with an audience! I’m not going to be OK after this movie… and I cannot wait. The new footage really focuses on the fallout of Dune: Part 2, where Paul broke the heart of Zendaya’s Chani by deciding to marry Florence Pugh’s Princess Irulan. He did so to take the throne as the Padishah Emperor – officially choosing power and war over anything else.

It certainly seems like Paul is going to the dark side here, so I’m happy that the event’s moderator Brittany Broski asked Chalamet if Paul is stepping into his “villain” era now. Here’s how the Oscar-nominated actor responded:

The writing was on the wall in Dune: Part Two that Paul maybe wasn’t going to be the hero of this story anymore, and in Part Three the ramifications of this will all come to a head. The trailer also sets up what’s going on with Robert Pattinson’s role of Scytale, who decides to execute a plot to dethrone Paul and involve the Princess.

I also think the trailer insinuates that Chani may actually be the one to go head-to-head with the Emperor by the end of the movie after things have gone bitter between them. Chalamet also said this about what’s going on with Paul and Chani during the event:

Part Three's main plotline takes place a couple decades after the second movie, and also features Anya Taylor-Joy as Paul’s sister, Alia. The franchise newcomer has called the role “very intense” and I can see why. While the first Dune: Part Three trailer got me excited, this second one has me moving the movie to the top of my list of 2026 movies I’m hyped for. A big part of that is Paul's nuanced arc across the trilogy being concluded. I mean, and this new poster? Check it:

During the event, we were also treated to an exclusive look at the opening of Dune: Part 3, which will be playing in front of IMAX screenings of The Odyssey next weekend. It had Javier Bardem’s Stilgar and some other men being thrust into an intense battle sequence in the rain. I’d imagine he’s operating under the orders of Paul after embracing him as the messianic Lisan al-Gaib at the end of Dune: Part 2. It doesn't show the whole battle sequence, so now I'm left wanting to watch the whole thing.

We'll have to wait for the final Dune film until December 18!

Minor spoilers for DC Studios’ Supergirl lie ahead.

When it comes to superhero movies, Jason Momoa holds a sweet distinction, as one of a group of actors who’ve been able to play two prominent roles. Momoa was hired to play Aquaman years ago as part of the DC Extended Universe and, in 2024, the fan-favorite actor achieved his dream of being cast as Lobo in the DCU. These particular versions of the DC characters do have their similarities, and even their first on-screen appearances are similar. Momoa is also aware of those parallels, and he shared a funny take with CinemaBlend.

The first sighting of Arthur Curry (Aquaman) in the DCEU technically comes in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice via footage glimpsed by Diana Prince. However, his formal debut happens in Justice League and, an early scene shows him chugging down a beer at a bar at an Icelandic village. And, funny enough, Lobo’s DCU debut in Supergirl sees him enjoying a drink at a bar on the planet Bilquis, where he encounters Kara Zor-El and Ruthye Marye Knoll. CinemaBlend had the chance to ask Momoa if the similarities of these debuts were intentional, and he jokingly refuted that notion with a perfect quip:

It’s true that Momoa has played plenty of characters who’ve enjoyed a good brew now and then. Superhero movie fans would likely agree with me when I say that the A-lister’s DC characters are particularly strong drinkers. I love this comment from Momoa, because it indicates the level of self-awareness he has when it comes not only to his characters but his own on-screen persona as a whole. Still, the star stressed that he was not responsible for Lobo and Arthur’s beverage choices:

What we have here is an actor who’s committed to his craft and, with that, he’s found considerable success. In terms of DC, Momoa’s profile rose after Aquaman earned more than $1 billion worldwide following its release in 2018. Momoa subsequently spoke about finding “baffling” levels of fame due to the movie’s success. Still, he’s apparently been able to handle the fame well, and what he appreciates is that it’s happening later in life. Momoa is specifically grateful that he’s become busy years after having been able to be with his kids during their formative years.

More recently, Momoa has been revelling in his Lobo casting, and he’s also spoken about the amount of work it took to transform him into the Czarnian bounty hunter. As it stands, Momoa seems keen on playing the role for the foreseeable future, though he said he’d only do a Lobo solo film if it were R-rated. Momoa also spoke about the prospect of someone playing Aquaman in the DCU. While he initially joked about taking that person out, he expressed openness to seeing that recasting.

Regardless of who plays the King of Atlantis next, I’d like to think fans won’t forget Jason Momoa’s take on the character and, so far, fans seem to dig his take on Lobo as well. Here’s hoping the cigar-smoking alien will return sooner rather than later and that he’ll continue to enjoy a good drink here and there. For right now, though, check out his DCU debut in Supergirl, which is now playing in theaters alongside other 2026 movie schedule releases. And stream both Justice League and Aquaman using an HBO Max subscription.

What is going on right now? Seriously, what is going on? I can’t navigate my browser anywhere on the Internet without stumbling into five takes about how Supergirl is hot trash in a cape. The weird thing, though, is that I’ve seen Supergirl, and it’s not hot trash in a cape. It’s just the latest mediocre superhero movie in a long line of mostly mediocre superhero movies that we’ve gotten in the last five years. So, why are we all acting like this one is uniquely problematic and offensive?

I saw Supergirl like two weeks ago at a screening in St Louis that was filled with like ninety percent randoms and ten percent press. I had a pretty good time. My wife had a pretty good time. A co-worker I went with and his buddy both had pretty good times. All of us thought it was a nice enough way to spend (less than) a couple hours.

I didn’t have individual conversations with everyone else in the crowd, but their general reactions seemed to match our feelings too. Everyone seemed to stay engaged. They laughed moderately at most of the jokes, leaned forward in their seats at the appropriate times and the bits of conversations I picked up leaving the theater were all blandly positive. It was like we all collectively gave it a weak thumbs up.

On my way home (before I started driving), I texted my buddy who is a big superhero fan. This is the exact copy of the message I sent him…

I assumed most reviews would fall somewhere in the 2.5-3.5 out of 5 range, and I was right. If you look on Rotten Tomatoes, the majority of them are mixed bag positives, but to my surprise, there’s a solid minority that are extremely, almost aggressively mean. That negativity (even from some huge outlets) is also mirrored on social media, where thousands of angry posts are accusing Supergirl of being some kind of embarrassing disaster. I’ve seen quite a few going a step further and saying DC needs to examine whether its entire new James Gunn franchise is even working because of how bad this movie allegedly is.

Wait, what? Maybe this is the moment where people just collectively decided they were sick of watching run-of-the-mill superhero movies, and Supergirl was the unlucky victim of that pent-up anger? Maybe fans and critics are willing to be a lot meaner and say things they wouldn’t normally say because it’s about a female superhero? Maybe DC fans have higher expectations than Marvel fans? Maybe some of the people commenting haven’t actually seen the movie and are just riled up about comments people involved made on the press tour?

I don’t know what’s going on. I’m not going to try and get in the heads of other people, but I will say that everyone I know who has seen the movie in real life, that didn’t go in with an obvious agenda, thought it was fine enough.

Fine enough as in a mixed bag. Alcock and Momoa are both quite good. Her dynamic with Superman works well, and there are a lot of fun individual scenes that keep the momentum up. That being said, there are also clearly some problems here. Most of the characters are a little one-note. The villain is weak. The soundtrack makes some odd choices. The stuff about Supergirl's backstory doesn't hit as hard as it should because not enough time is spent on Krypton.

It's definitely not The Dark Knight or even Avengers 1. It's a lot closer to something like Ant-Man And The Wasp, but instead of people talking about it like it's Ant-Man And The Wasp, they're talking about it like it's Superman IV or Ghost Rider II. It's not. Don't listen to the people telling you it is. The truth is Supergirl is fine enough. It's the latest mediocre superhero movie in a long line of mostly mediocre superhero movies, and while that's not ideal, it's better than what you've been hearing.

In addition to serving as the first solo outing for Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in the DCU, Supergirl also ushers in the debut of Lobo, played by the vivacious Jason Momoa. The reactions to the DC film have showered praise upon Momoa’s portrayal of the eccentric and violent bounty hunter and, at this point, the antihero seems to be striking a chord with fans. I’m particularly curious as to which major players Lobo will interact with next, and Momoa actually told CinemaBlend how he thinks Superman would respond to his character.

Lobo and Kara have a somewhat complex and humorous relationship, given that both of them find each other annoying on some level. However, without going into spoilers, they seem to find some level of mutual respect for each other by the end of the film. The Man of Steel is quite different from his cousin, of course, which is why CB asked Momoa how Superman might feel about Lobo. Ultimately, the fan-favorite actor’s take is as honest as it is humorous:

Honestly, I’m tempted to agree, as Kal-El and the “Main Man” are shown to have a somewhat tense relationship dynamic in comics and TV shows. My own first experience of seeing the two interact was in the DC Animated Universe via Superman: The Animated Series, in which Kal saw the motorcycle-riding Czarnian as more of a nuisance than anything else. Judging by Momoa’s comments, he’s of the belief that his character would bother Supes in the DCU as well:

Considering Superman’s strength and Lobo’s immortality, I’d say that would be quite a “tussle” for the ages. I really do hope, though, that David Corenswet’s Supes and Jason Momoa’s Last Czarnian do get the opportunity to cross paths in an upcoming DC movie. The question is just where and when that might happen. Given Momoa’s character is such a wild card, it’s hard to say where he might pop up next. The actor has revealed, though, that he’s open to doing a solo film – only on the condition that it’s rated R.

What I’ll say is that it would be a missed opportunity for Lobo not to return at some point and rub shoulders with the Big Blue Boy Scout or other major DC characters. The mere thought of Supes doing battle with the “Scourge o’ the Cosmos” is just too exciting not to consider. I’m confident that studio head James Gunn and co. will make that happen at some point but, until then, I’ll just remain satisfied that Jason Momoa achieved his dream of playing the cigar-chomping hitman.

If there is one word I would use to describe Supergirl, it’s “fun.” The film, which hits the 2026 movie schedule this weekend, has a very James Gunn vibe. It’s not directed by Gunn or written by him; those credits go to Craig Gillespie and Ana Nogueira, respectively. Still, Supergirl feels more like Guardians of the Galaxy than anything in the pre-Gunn era of the (formerly) DCEU, and not just because of the brisk runtime. Gillespie and Nogueira definitely put their imprint on it, but the new DC Universe already feels more cohesive than anything DC has done before, outside of The Dark Knight Trilogy.

That Humor And Those Needle Drops

To be sure, Supergirl has some very poignant moments (though some people seem to disagree with that) and doesn’t shy away from some pretty heavy themes playing out with Milly Alcock’s Supergirl/Kara Zor-El. However, it’s also filled with great jokes and funny moments. In that respect, it feels very much in the style of Guardians or Peacemaker (the first DC show created by Gunn). Some of the humor is raunchy, and the language is definitely PG-13. I loved all of that. It made the emotional moments more powerful and kept the movie chugging along at a great pace.

Then there are the needle drops. One reason I really love Gunn’s work on comic book movies is how great he is at picking songs. Bringing back a somewhat overlooked track from a quarter century ago in Superman with “Punkrocker” by Teddybears, featuring Iggy Pop, was brilliant. While Supergirl doesn’t really reach that deep into the annals of pop culture, adding some bangers by great current artists like Wet Leg, Wolf Alice, and Halsey feels perfect.

Where Will The Future Projects Fall?

One of the things the MCU really got right when it was firing on all cylinders was keeping a cohesive vibe, no matter who was directing or writing whichever movie was coming out. The DCEU was all over the place in that respect. Gunn, Gillespie, and Nogueira seem to have made a conscious effort to focus on this in the new DCU. The sum of the parts should add up to something. How this will work going forward will be fascinating to see.

Up next for DC television shows is Lanterns, which will hit the 2026 TV schedule in August, and the next DC film to be released will be the body horror Clayface in October. Lanterns is being described as having a detective show vibe, while obviously a horror movie like Clayface is unlikely ot have many lighter moments, but I can’t wait to see how they fit in here. The 2027 movie schedule includes Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to Superman, written and directed by Gunn, so I do expect that to bring the same energy as these first two movies.

All in all, I can’t wait to see this universe continue to expand and evolve, and I’m trusting the hand of Gunn more and more.

The superhero genre continues to be super popular, and fans who have watched the DC movies in order know that Jason Momoa's got a new character. Following his tenure as Aquaman (streaming with an HBO Max subscription), he's debuting as Lobo in Craig Gillespie's Supergirl. He's been doing press to promote the new DC movie, and no, he doesn't think it's cringe to ask him about his first time putting on a comic book movie costume.

Momoa's Lobo debuted in Supergirl's trailer, and immediately made a splash among fans. The Game of Thrones alum has always wanted to play the cosmic bounty hunter, and now it's his chance. While speaking with Fandango about his new DC role, the journalist interviewing him admitted she hates asking actors about slipping into their costume for the first time, but had to considering Lobo's badass look. Momoa responded with:

It certainly sounds like the hulking actor appreciates this question, and the transformative nature of using costumes and props when playing comic book roles in particular. Jason Momoa's passion for Lobo has been obvious for years now, and it sounds like once he was suited up as the DC antihero it was an especially significant experience. I just I wish I could have been a fly on the wall to see Momoa's reaction.

In addition to his badass costume and cosmic motorcycle, Jason Momoa also had to sit for hours of prosthetic makeup, teeth, and color contacts in order to transform into his new DC role. In the same interview he spoke about the way this helped him slip into character, offering:

Luckily for fans, the wait is over, and we can finally see Jason Momoa in all his glory as Lobo. We'll just have to see if he gets the R-rated solo movie that he'd like to do after Supergirl. Fingers crossed.

Supergirl is in theaters now as part of the 2026 movie release list. The DCU is slowly growing, and it should be fascinating to see how the blockbuster influences future projects like Man of Tomorrow.

I went to see Supergirl earlier this week, and contrary to what you may have heard from some haters, it’s a fun ride. It’s not exactly The Dark Knight or even Iron Man 1, but it’s a nice time at the movies. It’s got some enjoyable action sequences, a lot of laughs, good performances from likeable co-stars Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa in particular, and most importantly for this article, a breezy little runtime of one hour and forty-seven minutes.

To be clear, I’m not here to advocate that one hour and forty-seven minutes is a scientifically proven perfect runtime for every movie. It’s not. It’s not even the perfect runtime for every superhero movie. What I am here to zealously advocate for, however, is a movie being the right length for its tone, subject matter and the story it’s trying to tell. That’s not something every so-called event film gets, and it’s something DC, in particular, has often struggled with.

The History Of DC Runtimes

Here are the runtimes for every major, non-animated DC release since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy concluded. Supergirl (1 hour, 47 minutes), Superman (2 hours, 9 minutes), Joker 2 (2 hours, 18 minutes), Aquaman 2 (2 hours, 4 minutes), Blue Beetle (2 hours, 7 minutes), The Flash (2 hours, 24 minutes), Shazam 2 (2 hours, 10 minutes), Black Adam (2 hours, 5 minutes), The Batman (2 hours, 56 minutes), The Suicide Squad (2 hours, 12 minutes), The Snyder Cut (4 hours, 2 minutes), Wonder Woman 1984 (2 hours, 31 minutes), Birds Of Prey (1 hour, 49 minutes), Joker 1 (2 hours, 2 minutes), Shazam 1 (2 hours, 12 minutes) Aquaman 1 (2 hours, 23 minutes), Justice League (2 hours), Wonder Woman (2 hours, 21 minutes), the other Suicide Squad (2 hours, 3 minutes), Batman V Superman (2 hours, 31 minutes) and Man Of Steel (2 hours, 23 minutes).

There are definitely some bangers on the above list. Joker 1 is obviously great. The Batman, Wonder Woman 1 and several others are also strong movies. Quite a few more are pretty solid, but so many others are flat out just not that enjoyable to watch because they drag and get boring. Wonder Woman 1984 has a fun little throwback vibe for a little while, but it does not even come close to sustaining that over more than two and a half hours. I swear Man Of Steel features like ten or fifteen entire minutes of characters being thrown into different buildings. At least a half dozen of these movies are a slog to get through, but they may have been a lot more enjoyable if they cut 20 or 30 minutes out.

It’s wild that only two of the movies on the above list are under two hours. I’m definitely not arguing that Supergirl and Birds Of Prey are the best two films on the list. Birds Of Prey has some issues, and Supergirl is definitely not as good as at least the first three titles I mentioned. That being said, they’re more enjoyable than a lot of the stuff on the list because they get in and they get out. They don’t need more time to stretch out the story; so, they leave the extra bits on the cutting room floor. They were edited with a sense of pace and purpose in mind.

A Movie Should Be As Long As It Needs To Be

Maybe it’s because movie tickets have gotten really expensive. Maybe it’s because there’s more to watch at home via streaming services than ever before. Maybe it’s because our expectations have just collectively changed. Whatever the reason, there’s this prevailing idea right now that only certain movies are worth seeing in theaters, and if we actually go see those in theaters, we better get enough value for our money. The thing is, though, the value that’s most important to everyone is the movie being good or at least fun to watch.

And the thing about good movies is that there’s no inherent correct runtime. Each individual movie should be as long as the movie needs to be, which is sometimes under ninety minutes and sometimes three hours. That might sound stupidly obvious, but a lot of so-called event films, and especially superhero films, get stuck on this idea that they need to be long so they’ll feel epic and important. But not every superhero movie necessarily needs to feel epic. Some of them need to be honest that the stakes just aren’t that high.

For every assemble-the-team-style narrative like in Avengers 1 or creatively artsy and well-made prestige piece like Batman Begins, there are a half dozen that just want to provide a nice escape. They’re just trying to tell a relatively basic story, hit us with a couple of big action moments, offer a few laughs and send us on our way. Those movies in particular need to have a runtime that’s proportional to their momentum. If they can maintain the energy, excitement and laughs for two hours, then they should be two hours. If they start running out of steam after an hour and a half, then they should trim the fat.

I’ve probably been to the movies close to a thousand times in my life, and I’ve never watched a bad movie and thought, well, at least it was really long, so I got my money’s worth. Has anyone ever thought that in the history of going to the movies? The point of watching a movie is to be entertained, and everyone on Earth and Krypton would rather watch good content for an hour and forty-five minutes than bad content for two and a half hours. Shoutout to Supergirl for remembering that.

Summer is the time for blockbusters, and nothing says popcorn flick quite like superheroes. The DCU’s second feature Supergirl is set to hit the 2026 movie calendar this weekend. First reactions to Supergirl praised Milly Alcock as the titular character, but now that reviews are out, the general consensus has been different. In fact, one critic has gone viral after completely lambasting the film.

So what's happening? And what are reviews saying?

One Critic’s Reaction To ‘Numbingly Flat’ Supergirl Causes Backlash

Supergirl reviews have dropped, but drawing nearly as much attention as the movie is Variety critic Owen Gleiberman and his strong disdain for the movie. And I mean strong. In his review, he calls the upcoming DC movie “super-horrendous,” saying it has the “worst script I can remember.” In his words:

He goes on to say he’s shocked that director Craig Gillespie was even capable of making something so “generic in its action and its attitudinizing.”

The backlash against the critic came quickly, particularly for one of Owen Gleiberman’s paragraphs that discussed Milly Alcock’s appearance, and people fired back on X (Twitter), writing:

• idk what movie you watched but I hope you get that hug you so desperately need. – hopsgeeknews
• Its fine not liking a movie but some of those digs seem pretty unprofessional like damn – TweetsByDM
• Criticising a woman’s look is your movie review? Fucking pathetic – EverythingDCU_

Not all of the comments aimed at the critic were so nice (or appropriate for repetition). One common refrain is that while it’s OK — and typical — for critics to disagree about a movie, Owen Gleiberman’s assessment is way harsher than those of his counterparts.

What Other Reviews Say About Supergirl

The majority of Supergirl reviews seem to fall kind of in the middle — not mind-blowingly great but not a disaster, either — like the low-stakes fun you often expect from a summer movie. CinemaBlend’s own Mack Rawden and Jessica Rawden had a pleasant experience at their screening, writing:

• Mack: Just a nice, fun crowd pleaser that pretty much anyone can enjoy. Really liked Milly, as well as the humor.
• Jessica: What Mack said, plus the runtime is so tight, which I personally appreciated. No bloat. I laughed out loud at Momoa’s lines in particular many times. It’s the perfect summer movie.

Other reviews seemed to fall more in line with these thoughts, as Tim Grierson of Screen International writes in his review:

Zaki Hasan of the San Francisco Chronicle also has an overall positive takeaway from an admittedly imperfect movie:

Amelia Emberwing at The Wrap also calls out Supergirl’s “muddled” action and says Jason Momoa was wholly unnecessary in this movie. Despite its faults, however, the heart of the movie remains intact throughout. Her review reads:

Last year's Superman was, indeed, more well-received than its followup, earning a Certified Fresh 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 57% for Milly Alcock’s flick. Just like the score, most of the reviews are in that middle range — and Supergirl’s box office projections aren’t A+ — but it’s clear that many don’t believe it’s bad enough to warrant such overly negative feedback.

Milly Alcock already has a solid level of notoriety, thanks to her work on House of the Dragon. However, the Australian actress’ public profile could soar to new heights, thanks to her 2026 movie schedule entry, Supergirl. The latest film in the DCU sees Alcock play Kara Zor-El (following her wild cameo in Superman). Alcock recently spoke about being terrified over the prospect of finding more fame after her solo superhero movie debut, and she discussed working with co-star Jason Momoa, who’s definitely no stranger to stardom.

I’d imagine that starring in a superhero-centric movie can be a double-edged sword. That’s because, while it’s likely satisfying when said film is successful, that buzz can also put additional attention on the actors involved. Stars who play comic book-birthed characters can gain particularly strong followings due to their roles (à la Robert Downey and Iron Man or Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman). Milly Alock recently spoke to SFX Magazine on CinemaBlend and, after being asked if she was ready to be “idolized,” she said this:

I can understand the trepidation, as that’s a lot of pressure for a person to handle. And that’s just taking into account the more positive aspects of being in such a position. Unfortunately, there’s also considerable toxicity that can come with fandoms and, sadly enough, many female actors, in particular, are subjected to such negativity. Still, Alcock has a great outlook on dealing with toxic fandoms, and I’d like to think she’ll be prepared for any praise that comes her way following the release of her upcoming DC movie.

Thankfully, Momoa – who plays eccentric bounty hunter Lobo in the film – has been in Alcock’s shoes. In 2018, the Hawaiian actor found “baffling” new levels of fame after starring in Aquaman, which made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. In the years since the film hit theaters, Momoa has discussed fame and how blessed he feels to have found it later in life due to having been able to be with his kids when they were younger.

The star enjoys his work, though and, per Alcock’s comments, he was a positive force on the Supergirl set. She explained:

Momoa was enthusiastic about taking on his previous DC role, but he seems downright thrilled to be playing the “Main Man.” Getting cast as Lobo was a longtime dream for the A-lister, and he seems to be making the most of it. He’s also addressed the notion of someone else playing Aquaman at some point, and he believes anything is possible on that front. There may come a time when someone else also plays Kara at some point in the future, but I’d wager that’s a ways off since Milly Alcock’s tenure is just getting started. Here’s hoping her stint as the Girl of Steel is marked with positivity and not too much stress from being looked up to by fans.

In fact, Supergirl is just the second feature in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, making the first reactions to the upcoming superhero movie especially important to fans. So what are people saying?

Last year’s Superman gave us a glimpse of the Man of Steel’s more jaded cousin Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock), but now we’re moving far beyond that drunken cameo, and those who have caught an early screening have some pretty strong opinions about both Alcock as the titular antihero and Jason Momoa as Lobo. According to Drew Massey:

Germain Lussier of Gizmodo disagrees that the upcoming DC movie is better than Superman, but he does concede that it’s the “perfect” follow-up, with stronger characters that drive the movie’s emotional stakes. In the critic’s words:

I don’t have the science to back this claim up right at the moment, but I feel confident saying that Jason Momoa makes the promotional campaign for any movie or TV show that much more enjoyable. The upcoming DCU movie Supergirl is certainly no exception, with the Lobo actor utilizing all of his innate charm and charisma to try to get fans in theater seats, and he’s not above bringing his “hoodrat” friends around to make sure it happens.

Not that there’s anything wrong with being a hoodrat, especially if it means cavorting around London, England on motorcycles ahead of the country’s red carpet premiere for the 2026 movie release with Milly Alcock in the titular role of Supergirl. For those unable to watch, the Honolulu native kicks things off by referencing the Main Man and calling out his own bastich biker buddies, saying:

Although that description is slightly overselling things, considering the evidence of "hoodrat sh-t" on hand is just formation biking that goes from the London streets and under the Marble Arch and into the Supergirl premiere event proper. There, he greeted and chatted up fans, posing for pics both on and off of his vehicle of choice. No sign of whether or not fans were just as interested to meet the 'Rats, as it were.

I can understand why Jason Momoa didn’t get fully decked out as Lobo himself to go riding around London, since the full-body makeup process was extremely intense for the actor to go through on a daily basis. Would it have been cool if all of the other people he was riding with did go through that hours-long experience so that it looked like he was riding around with a pack of Lobos? Obviously. But beggars can't be choosers, even if cheggars can be boozers, amirite? Anybody?

Jason Momoa also posed for carpet pics with co-stars Milly Alcock and Eve Ridley, with the latter playing Ruthye Marye Knoll, the young girl whose quest for vengeance pulls Kara Zor-El away from her birthday binge-drinking. I can't wait to see Lobo and Ruthye sharing the screen in the movie, as I feel like that'll be unlike any other character dynamic hitting screens this year, and not just regarding new superhero movies.

Considering how much time and effort Momoa has put into the first Lobo performance for a live-action feature film, one might hope to see him returning to the character for a movie where his name is on the marquee. And the chances of seeing a standalone Lobo movie actually are pretty good, assuming DC Studios execs take no issue with spinning it out a new superhero movie with a hard-R rating. That approach is technically happening with Clayface, though he’s more of a straightforward villain than the anti-heroic Lobo, so we'll have to wait and see how James Gunn & Co. play it.

First thing's first: enough fans have to actually show up in theaters to watch Supergirl to justify any follow-ups. So catch Kara, Krypto and all the rest when Craig Gillespie's DCU film hits theaters on June 26, 2026.

It's an exciting time to be a DC fan, because co-CEO James Gunn's newly formed DCU is about to expand again. The upcoming DC movie Supergirl is nearly here, and it will include Jason Momoa's debut as Lobo. Both the actor and the fans have been waiting for him to play the cosmic bounty hunter, and are curious about where he might pop up next. The Game of Thrones actor is down for a solo movie, but he's got one specific condition for it.

Supergirl's trailer debuted Momoa's take on Lobo, and it looks like an incredible role for the hulking actor. While promoting the movie, he spoke to Collider and revealed the way he'd like to approach a Lobo solo movie. In his words:

He certainly didn't mince his words. Despite how much Jason Momoa loves Lobo, he only wants to do his own movie if it can be rated R. It seems he wants a possible solo movie to be more adult-oriented, allowing the violence and language of the gruff antihero to take center stage. And I've got to say, I think he's got a point.

Lobo is a unique character in DC lore, one that has been adapted in animation a number of times. Supergirl is the first live-action version on the big screen, and while that movie is indeed PG-13, Jason Momoa thinks that a movie revolving around his character should be Rated R. And giving the bounty hunter the ability to have a foul mouth and intense violence sounds like the correct way to let Lobo take center stage. We'll have to see if this actually happens or not.

Whether or not we see Lobo get his own movie (regardless of rating) is likely related to how Supergirl performs at the box office, and if audiences embrace Jason Momoa's new DC character. But there's been some history of DC movies getting R ratings, specifically the Joker movies and the upcoming Clayface movie. So it's not totally out of the question to think of Lobo getting that treatment.

Supergirl will hit theaters on June 26th as part of the 2026 movie release list, complete with Jason Momoa. Fingers crossed that Lobo gets his own movie sometime in the future, even if it's not listed in the first slate of DCU projects, aka Gods and Monsters.

Hide your women, money, and booze, because Lobo is coming to a galaxy near you. Specifically, the Czarnian anti-hero will roll up in theaters in the upcoming DCU movie Supergirl, with Jason Momoa donning all that make-up and leather. This obviously isn’t the actor’s first DC role — that was the far more tanned Aquaman, a character that has yet to be recast for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s cinematic universe. How would Momoa react if and when another actor steps in?

If anything's possible, then I have quite a few wishes to bring up involving Batman, Wonder Woman, and that since-defunct Arkham Asylum TV show. But let's keep this wishing focused on Jason Momoa characters.

Could Momoa's Lobo And Aquaman Ever Share The Screen?

Peacemaker set several precedents for DCEU characters to reappear within DC Studios projects, and while Jason Momoa's casting as Lobo seemed to confirm that the DCU would bring a new actor in to play Arthur Curry in the future, that doesn't have to be the case, right? When CinemaBlend's Hannah Saulic asked if Momoa's Lobo could ever appear opposite his Aquaman, he shared:

Momoa then went a little deeper into the logic behind why it wouldn't exactly break reality for Gunn and Safran to potentially keep him in the mix for any Aquaman appearances. As he put it:

Supergirl star Milly Alcock took over the role of Kara for Craig Gillespie’s film (and that lush-ious Superman cameo), having replaced the heartbroken Flash actress Sasha Calle. So it’s hard to know what the case would be with other characters.

All things considered, I wouldn’t expect the DCU to rush into another live-action Aquaman feature anyway, so it might be a moot point. But I could certainly see Arthur showing up for a smaller role in a team-based movie, or whatever the situation, and having someone already established like Momoa would only help. (Also allowed: Alan Ritchson reprising his Smallville role.)

Even outside of Aquaman-related concerns, it’s also unknown if and when we’ll see Momoa’s Main Man again in the DCU, but we do know a Lobo popcorn bucket set for release when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26, 2026. See it!

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a well-oiled machine, the newly formed DCU is still in its infancy. Fans who spent years watching the DC movies in order watched as the former shared universe ended after Aquaman 2, with co-CEO James Gunn crafting a new one from scratch. Jason Momoa happens to be in both universes, and he recently spoke about how complicated the process of becoming Lobo was for the upcoming DC movie Supergirl.

Jason Momoa posted a video after meeting with James Gunn back in 2023, and fans quickly surmised he might be going from Aquaman to Lobo in the new shared universe. Supergirl's full trailer showed him looking pretty accurate to the comics, and in an interview with Fandango the 46-year-old actor spoke about how much time he spent in the makeup chair. In his words:

This definitely sounds like a ton of prep work, as well as fodder for some challenges while filming Supergirl. Momoa first became a household name for playing Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones (streaming with an HBO Max subscription), and then went to DC to play Arthur Curry/Aquaman. Both of those roles required very little clothes and none of the extensive prosthetics used to bring Lobo to life.

While the process itself might have been a challenge, it sounds like getting into Lobo's skin (and eyes) helped the Minecraft Movie actor immerse himself as his new DC character. As Momoa put it:

While Supergirl has only released limited footage so far, Momoa's star power really leaps off the screen in the trailers and featurettes that have arrived online. While he's known for his charisma, it sounds like getting into Lobo's skin (literally) was super helpful on Craig Gillespie's set. The actor addressed the prep that went into playing the cosmic mercenary and bounty hunter, saying:

It sounds like, despite the hours in the makeup chair, Jason Momoa had a great time bringing Lobo to life on the big screen. Luckily for moviegoers, the wait for Supergirl is nearly over.

Fans will be able to judge Momoa's take on the character when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26th as part of the 2026 movie release list. We'll just have to see how big his role is and if the character ends up popping up in future DCU projects.

You know, art is subjective, and to one person a painting of an actor looks like Zendaya and to another it looks like Jason Momoa. I know that sounds random, but that is a real thing that happened when Anya Taylor-Joy presented a painting to Jack Black. She said it was the Supergirl actor, while the School of Rock star thought it was a “topless Zendaya.” Now, Jason Momoa himself has been confronted with this painting.

Before we get to Momoa’s reaction, let me give you a brief history lesson. While Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black were promoting The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s release on the 2026 movie schedule, they were asked to paint one of their past co-stars. Black chose his Jumanji co-star Dwayne Johnson, while The Queen's Gambit star picked her Dune: Part Three co-star Jason Momoa. However, the Bowser actor thought it was her other Dune co-star, Zendaya (even though the person in the painting isn’t wearing a shirt).

Then, a few weeks later, Jason Momoa was presented with this painting during an interview with ET. Here’s how he reacted:

As you can see in the video, Momoa was asked who the painting was of, and he did correctly guess himself, though not with much confidence. First, he said “Aquaman,” and then, because it seemed “Hawaiian” and there was a surfboard, he followed that up with Chief of War (which you can stream with an Apple TV subscription). Ultimately, he didn’t really land on an answer, saying:

When he was told it was him, he immediately said it was hard to tell because the painting didn’t have facial hair, which is valid. However, I would like to note that in the Dune: Part Three trailer, you can see that Momoa does not have a big beard like he normally does, and that’s the movie he worked on with Taylor-Joy. So, I see a potential reason why she didn’t include it.

My favorite moment in the video, easily, comes right after that when Momoa learned that Anya Taylor-Joy painted this. He smiled so big, and then when he was told that Black thought it was Zendaya, he replied with:

Honestly, I don’t think he could have had a better response. He was so kind and clearly got a real kick out of it. Plus, I’d imagine it was really fun for him to hear that his Dune: Part Three colleague and his Minecraft co-star had this wild interaction that was centered around him.

Now, I hope Momoa gets the chance to show off his artistic skills and paint either Anya Taylor-Joy or Jack Black. All three of them have multiple releases this year, with Momoa specifically having parts in the upcoming DC movie, Supergirl, Street Fighter and Dune: Part Three, so the chance for him to paint them (or maybe even Zendaya for real) is out there.

Fans who spent years watching the DC movies in order have been treated to the newly formed DCU, courtesy of co-CEO James Gunn. The next upcoming DC movie is Supergirl, which features both Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa. And they recently gave somewhat similar comments about playing Supergirl and Aquaman, respectively.

I'm sure he'd rather be screaming to the rooftops about the fact that he would be joining the Justice League.

Later in the same interview, the Wrecking Crew actor spoke about the nerves associated with bringing Aquaman to life in live-action. As he put it:

He's not wrong. Aquaman was a punch line for years prior to Jason Momoa bringing his hulking physicality and signature charisma to the role. But his tenure as the character was ultimately a success that fans responded to. And in addition to his role in Justice League, the Aquaman movie became the highest-grossing DCEU flick upon its release. Now that role is in the rear view, and instead he's playing Lobo, who is a character that seems very close to who the 46-year-old actor is.

What Milly Alcock Said About Playing Supergirl

Funny enough, Jason Momoa's comments about his Aquaman nerves actually sound similar to what his Supergirl co-star Milly Alcock said about playing Kara Zor-El in the newly formed DCU. She recently admitted:

Comic book fans are known for making their opinions known, so it sounds like Alcock is a big nervous about how they'll react to Supergirl. This is a huge gig for the actress, who coincidentally also became known thanks to a Game of Thrones role. I have to wonder if she and Momoa shared stories about Westeros on set.

We'll be able to see these two actors share the big screen when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26th as part of the 2026 movie release list. The pressure is on, especially since it's only the second movie in the DCU.

Since Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black play the famed Nintendo characters of Princess Peach and Bowser in the latest 2026 movie release, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it’s only fair that they’d get to play some games of their own while promoting it. But, when the co-stars were asked to paint pictures of their co-stars, things hilariously went askew for Taylor-Joy (and it involves Zendaya).

While in Tokyo, Japan, to promote the Super Mario sequel that critics and audiences can’t seem to agree on, Taylor-Joy and Black were asked to paint one of their co-stars. Check out what happened when they guessed who the other had illustrated:

This is so, so funny! As shown in the video, Jack Black revealed the painting of his co-star first, which was Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who he has worked with on the Jumanji movies. It makes perfect sense he would pick him, considering he just wrapped on the fourth Jumanji with the actor just weeks ago. Taylor-Joy was stumped on who it was because she seemed to forget who was in the movie, but I totally see the School of Rock actor's vision here. The raised eyebrow definitely gives it away, too!

It’s when Anya Taylor-Joy showcased her painting that things went a little sideways. Black was given the hint that it was one of her Dune: Part 3 co-stars. So, when he saw her canvas, he suspected right away it was Zendaya. But, the Princess Peach actress got embarrassed by the guess, asking Black, “Why would she be shirtless?”

But it didn’t stop there. Black then went to Timothée Chalamet, which was wrong as well. Ultimately, Taylor-Joy pointed out that the subject was “clearly in Hawai’i,” given the surfboard and ocean in the background, leading them to the real answer: Jason Momoa! What a goofy moment between these two.

In defense of Jack Black, I totally see why he thought Zendaya. Taylor-Joy gave her painting’s face more female-looking features, which only makes it more hilarious that, for a moment, he thought she’d painted a topless Zendaya. Black sweetly agreed later on that the piece of art was actually “kind of a Momoa!” And, he would know, given he worked with the guy on A Minecraft Movie.

Anya Taylor-Joy had a hidden role in Dune: Part 2, where it was revealed she’d be playing Paul’s sister, Alia. Coming in Part 3, she’ll have a larger role, and yes, Jason Momoa will be back, even though Duncan Idaho died in the first part. This time, he’ll be a humanoid named Hayt, called a “ghola” in the Dune universe, created in Duncan’s image.

Jason Momoa is on the ground in Hawai'i as major floods devastate communities across the islands, forcing the actor to abandon his home. The damage has been widespread, with homes hit, farms affected, and tens of thousands of residents dealing with outages in the storm’s aftermath. He’s never been shy about turning up for Hawai'i, so it's not surprising he has been stepping in and amplifying relief efforts. But what I did not expect was his shout-out to the rock-and-roll icons, Metallica.

In a recent Instagram video, Momoa not only spoke about the ongoing recovery work but also pointed out major support from an unexpected source. In the video below, he reveals that one of the first calls he received was from Metallica member and fellow Hawai'i resident Kirk Hammet.

Momoa keeps attention on the people affected and the work still ahead, pointing viewers toward ways they can help. But the caption offers another layer to the update, building on just how much support is already coming in. He writes:

The Metallica connection might seem unexpected at first glance, but there’s a real tie there. Kirk Hammett has long had a home in Hawai‘i and frequently spends time on O‘ahu, often spotted surfing when he’s not on tour. Recognizing this bond helps explain why the band’s involvement feels more personal.

The scale of the support stands out. In particular, through its All Within My Hands foundation, Metallica is contributing $125,000 toward relief efforts, with funds distributed across the Hawaiian Council, the Lāhui Foundation, and Hui O He‘e Nalu.

That funding arrives at a critical moment for the islands. Hawai‘i is seeing its worst flooding in more than two decades. Damage estimates reach into the billions statewide. On O‘ahu alone, hundreds of homes were impacted. Farms took significant losses. More than 100,000 residents lost power after the storm.

Momoa also confirmed more support is coming, including a benefit concert planned for April 23. Details remain limited. The effort clearly goes beyond a one-time response, focusing on sustaining both attention and funding as recovery continues.

Even with that work underway, Momoa's 2026 movie schedule isn't slowing down. The DC Universe veteran has a packed year ahead. He is stepping away from Aquaman and into the role he was born to play: Lobo. He will debut as Lobo in new DC movies, beginning with this summer's Supergirl, with a full trailer arriving today, March 31, 2026. Supergirl flies into theaters on June 26, 2026.

The superhero genre is showing no signs of slowing down, and the newly formed DCU is still in its infancy. Co-CEO James Gunn is methodically crafting the shared universe, with the first slate of projects titled Gods and Monsters. The next upcoming DC movie heading to theaters is Craig Gillespie's Supergirl, and we were just treated to its full trailer. In it we got Milly Alcock's narration, lots more of Jason Momoa's Lobo, as well as an emotional story related to poor Krypto. Why won't the villains of the universe leave this superpowered pooch alone?

While Supergirl's teaser trailer arrived back in December, we got to see Milly Alcock's "messy" character take center stage following her cameo in Superman. But the above trailer much more context into the story heading to theaters, which will seemingly be focused on Kara Zor-El's truma, and her rescue mission after Krypto is poisoned by the villainous Brigands.

Craig Gillespie told CinemaBlend that Krypto was going to be at the heart of the movie's story, but I'm not emotionally prepared to see the little guy sick. Supergirl has just three days to hunt down the bad guys and get the antidote, which will seemingly be the main plot of her movie. Luckily she's not going to be alone in this quest.

In both trailers we saw Kara interacting with Eve Ridley's Ruthye Marye Knol, a young fighter who is seemingly also hunting the Brigands. They team up, but Supergirl also tells her that "revenge won't take your pain away." Of course she knows about pain herself, having watch her home planet's destruction.

Then there's Kara's other ally, Lobo. The cosmic antihero is finally getting his live-action movie debut in Supergirl, in a role that looks perfect for Jason Momoa. It looks like he meets Alcock's hero in a dive bar, where they share a shot together. Despite the cosmic character usually operating in the morally gray space, it looks like they somehow end up aligned and fighting the bad guys together.

Of course, fans who have been watching the DC movies in order will likely be thrilled that David Corenswet's Superman is seen early in this trailer, showing some concern for his cousin's well-being. Will her adventure in space finally bring them together on Earth? Only time will tell.

All will be revealed when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26th as part of the 2026 movie release list. Hopefully Krypto makes it out of the blockbuster alive, so I don't have to riot in the streets.

Jason Momoa and some of his loved ones found themselves in a precarious situation in Hawaii this past weekend. The actor revealed on social media that he and family members were staying in proximity to the O'ahu’s North Shore at the same time that flash flooding began to impact the region. Momoa and co. were eventually forced to leave the area once their power went out. While the star made it out, he – and others – have since shared photos and videos that provide insight into the damage as well as the ongoing relief efforts.

Sometime after the flooding, Momoa posted various photos and clips to social media. Within the series of pictures shared to the actor’s Instagram stories were snapshots that showed damaged roads in the North Shore. As can be seen in the photo below, the pavement has been split in half as a result of the significant weather event:

That’s a particularly striking image, and one that truly drives home the seriousness of the situation. Momoa also shared another photo of a road, which is also split:

While he was raised in Idaho, Jason Momoa – whose father is a native Hawaiian – was born in Honolulu and has long expressed affection for the state. Momoa’s love for the island has manifested in various ways over the years. That included bringing revenue and work to it by filming Chief of War (which is streamable with an Apple TV subscription) there. Momoa also provided aid amid the wildfires that impacted Maui in 2023 (as Dwayne Johnson also did). Momoa hasn’t held back showing the devastation here, including in this video:

Per People, the O'ahu Department of Emergency Management pressed residents to leave the island for their safety. It was subsequently reported by this past Saturday, March 21, that hundreds of people had been rescued amid the flooding. Now, clean-up efforts are in effect, and Momoa – alongside girlfriend Adria Arjona – have been helping in the aftermath of the flooding. Ian Streetz, a stunt performer and collaborator of Momoa’s, took to Instagram to not only reflect on the damage but show how Momoa and co. had been lending a hand:

Momoa himself also shared a video featuring Arjona, with which he revealed that they teamed up with Zippy’s – Hawaiian restaurant chain – to provide meals for those in need. Take a look at what the father of two shared:

Comments that have been shared by officials suggest that this situation will have long-lasting effects on the state of Hawaii. To put this all into perspective, it’s been said that this is the worst flooding the state has dealt with in over 20 years. Governor Josh Green has since spoken out, saying that the storm-related damages could cost more than $1 billion.

It’s truly unfortunate to see so much destruction due to the flooding and to hear that it could take some time for the area to recover from it all. What’s encouraging, however, is to see Jason Momoa – who’s also looking ahead to several 2026 movie schedule releases – doing what he can to assist those who’ve been affected by this situation.

Kirsten Dunst is one of our best actors working today who’s been in a ton of really great movies, but they often don’t often scream “box office smash” – since her Spider-Man days, anyway. So the fact that she’s now the star of one of Hollywood’s upcoming video game movies, A Minecraft Movie 2, is a great surprise, especially when you consider the funny backstory behind it.

As the sequel for A Minecraft Movie reportedly gets ready to start rolling cameras next month, we’ve just learned that Dunst will be joining Jason Momoa and Jack Black for the sequel, per Variety. Warner Bros. says details about the actor’s role and what the plot line for the followup will “remain deep in the mine” for now, but what a welcome twist for Dunst!

Ironically enough, Kirsten Dunst actually pitched herself to be in A Minecraft Movie 2 back in August 2025 since her kids loved the first movie, and, as Town & Country claimed, “she’d like to make a pile of cash.” Perhaps her plea got the production’s attention? Here’s what she said at the time:

Dunst has a seven-year-old son named Ennis and four-year-old son named James, who she shares with her partner and fellow actor Jesse Plemons. This seems like the ultimate move for the actress to do one for them and perhaps win some cool mom points with her young boys. And, let’s not forget how funny Kirsten Dunst can be! She’s been in hilarious comedies like Drop Dead Gorgeous, Bring It On and Anchorman 2.

The 43-year-old movie star also deserves a set to joke around on after doing quite a few rough dramas in recent years like 2024’s Civil War and 2021’s The Power of the Dog. As she pointed out in the interview where she name-dropped Minecraft, it’s been a while since she’s been in a movie that was a big commercial success, though Civil War did become one of A24’s highest-grossing movies in 2024.

When it comes to A Minecraft Movie 2, you can pretty much bet on it being a huge box office hit considering how the last one did. A Minecraft Movie made $961.2 billion worldwide, making it the No. 5 highest-grossing movie of 2025 globally and it was actually the No. 1 movie of last year at the domestic box office. The sequel is being made by the same team behind the first movie, and according to Jason Momoa, the script had him “laughing out loud”.

If you’re mispronouncing her name now, you might want to learn it, because Kirsten Dunst is sure to be in with the kids when A Minecraft Movie 2 hits theaters on July 23, 2027! While we wait for it, you can revisit the first movie right now with an HBO Max subscription.

Denis Villneave did something many had previously believed impossible when he adapted Frank Herbert’s Dune into two well-regarded and quite successful films. They were so well regarded that fans wanted to see more, and while the director initially seemed hesitant to go back to Arakis, it was eventually confirmed that Dune: Part Three was on the way.

This week, we saw the first trailer for Dune: Part Three, and while those unfamiliar with the books likely have a lot of questions about what’s going on, one of the biggest has to be ‘Wait a second, didn’t Jason Momoa’s character die in the first movie?’ This was apparently also a question Momoa himself had as he appeared at a special trailer preview event attended by CinemaBlend, where he asked Villeneuve…

I mean, the answer to both parts of that question is ultimately, because that’s what author Frank Herbert wrote in Dune and Dune: Messiah, the sequel that is the basis for Dune: Part Three. The reason for killing him off was likely just narrative necessity, as Idaho’s death leaves Paul Atraedes alone, and it is an emotional moment for the reader who likely came to like the character.

In his answer, Denis Villeneuve suggests, however, that part of the reason for the return of Duncan Idaho in the book may have been that Herbert realized he had killed off a quite popular character, and thus came up with a way to bring him back.

As far as how the return of Duncan Idaho works in the book, it’s essentially a form of cloning that allows Idaho to return, though in the book, he has no memory of his previous self (at least at first) and goes by a different name, Hayt.

Whatever the reason, Jason Momoa is certainly excited to be back in the world of Dune. You can tell by the way he asks his question that the fact that he missed out on Dune Part Two doesn’t bother him that much. He’s just glad to be back.

Dune Part Three is set to open in December, on the same day that Avengers: Doomsday will open in theaters. We would have expected one of them to move dates by now if that was going to happen, but so far it has not. If they do both open together, it’s almost guaranteed to make one of the biggest box office weekends in history.

Those who have read Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah have already known that the third film in director Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy adaptation would be quite different from its predecessors. The story jumps ahead in time, and instead of being a revolutionary epic, it unfolds as a political thriller – with sinister forces working to undermine the power of Emperor Paul Atreides as the Fremen jihad continues to spread across the universe. What we have not known, of course, is exactly what that would mean for the big screen vision, but this morning we have been delivered a staggering impression via the first look that is the debut trailer for Dune: Part Three.

We are still about nine months away from the highly anticipated upcoming sci-fi blockbuster arriving in theaters, but it seems that the arrival of Project Hail Mary on large format screens this coming Friday was deemed too enticing an opportunity for an early preview to pass up. I won’t say it’s not effective being watched on one’s computer, but every part of the Dune experience, including the marketing, is best seen on the biggest screen possible – and I say that with a personal stamp of approval, having attended an IMAX preview of this new trailer yesterday afternoon.

The footage doesn’t reveal much in terms of story, but we see a bunch of familiar and new faces – and even the familiar faces look considerably different given that 17 years have passed since we last saw the majority of them.

Depicting the aftermath of Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) ascendency, his launch of a cosmic war, and his agreement to marry Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh) – all depicted in the end of Dune: Part Two – Dune: Part Three sees the ruler surrounded by political and personal conflict. The Fremen jihad continues and he abstains from impregnating his wife out of his commitment to and love for Chani (Zendaya).The greatest threat of all, however, comes from an antagonist conspiracy seeking to undermine his rule that sees him “gifted” with a ghola: an artificial human named Hayt (Jason Momoa) bred to resemble Paul’s mentor and friend Duncan Idaho.

The trailer features a number of returning stars, including the aforementioned Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Anya-Taylor Joy, and Jason Momoa, but it also gives us our first look at some new characters, most notably Robert Pattinson as the antagonist Face Dancer Scytale. As you probably noticed, the actor is sporting a very different look in this movie than past performances, as he has not only a short crew cut, but his hair is bleach blond.

It feels like it was just yesterday that Denis Villeneuve was first blowing our minds with his brilliant and beautiful depiction of Arrakis in 2021’s Dune, but we are now just a few months away from seeing the conclusion of the trilogy that he has personally been envisioning for decades. With the movie still in post-production following the conclusion of filming at the end of last year, this trailer is only a tease of what we can expect, and I will join all fans in savoring every peek we get in the runup to the release date. Be sure to mark your calendars: audiences around the world will be able to see Dune: Part Three on December 18, and it is expected to be one of the most special cinematic events of the year.

Happy Birthday, Lobo! The fictional intergalactic bounty hunter was celebrated this week amid the anniversary of his first appearance in DC Comics. Said milestone is particularly auspicious this year, as the fan-favorite character will also make his big screen debut in the Supergirl movie, produced by James Gunn and starring Jason Momoa in the role of Lobo alongside Miley Alcock's Supergirl. So it comes as no surprise that both Momoa and Gunn marked the occasion with messages

Both men took to social media to celebrate the special day. Gunn originally posted about the Lobo anniversary, celebrating the comic artists who first put him on the page. Momoa then reposted Gunn’s statement on Instagram, adding…

Momoa’s journey to playing Lobo has been a long and winding road. Many DC fans thought the Game of Thrones alum would be perfect to play the character during the previous big-screen iteration of DC’s comic universe. Even Momoa believed he was being called in to discuss Lobo when Warner Bros. brought him in. He was surprised when he was offered Aquaman instead. Filmmaker Zack Snyder felt strongly about Momoa playing the King of Atlantis at the time and, even this week, Snyder shared a throwback photo of Momoa from their Justice League prep.

It wasn’t even that long after James Gunn took creative control at DC Studios that Jason Momoa teased that Gunn had offered him something, and we knew it wasn’t a return to playing Aquaman. We had to wait some time before it was confirmed that Momoa would play Lobo and, now, we’re just a few months from seeing the character brought to life. If only we could get a better look at him. Honestly, the anniversary of the debut of Lobo would have been a great day to release a better image of the bounty hunter. The only shot we got of him in the Supergirl trailer was the image, all in shadow. You get a general sense of how Lobo will look, which is pretty comic-accurate, but something a little clearer would be nice. Even the people making the movie don’t have a clear shot to promote the project.

It feels like the decision was made to hold off on Momoa’s Lobo look as part of a marketing tease. Historically, marketing teams rarely reveal everything up front while promoting a film but, since we know Lobo is in the movie at all, it’s not like seeing him clearly will be all that much of a surprise.

We’ll almost certainly get at least one more trailer before Supergirl hits the screen in June, and there’s a decent chance that one will finally give us a good look at Lobo. We might even be lucky enough to hear him speak and get an idea of how he’ll fit into the Supergirl story and interact with Miley Alcock's title character. It’s also a safe bet that this won’t be the only place we see Lobo in the new DCU franchise. Jason Momoa is just too big a star not to use more often.

Jason Momoa might be known for commanding the screen as a warrior king or comic book antihero, but a recent street-side interview showed a much softer, and surprisingly sentimental, side of the actor. He took some time off his busy 2026 movie schedule to answer a few fashion questions and give us an update on his love life and kids, which, according to him, "everything has meaning."

The Instagram account @WatchingNewYork recently caught up with Momoa while praising him as a “man of legendary style, street style,” asking about the meaning behind his layered, lived-in look. What followed was a window into how deeply personal his everyday armor really is. Momoa explained:

It’s very Momoa coded. Rugged, a little chaotic, but undeniably heartfelt. The Aquaman star isn’t just throwing on vintage workwear for aesthetic points. Those paint stains from his daughter’s first art project? Memories. The worn fabric and patched-up holes? Chapters of his life. The small heart necklace his daughter made? Permanent.

What stands out most is the intention. The scuffs and stitching might look accidental from the outside, but to him, they’re markers of time. His wardrobe isn’t just about style. It’s emotional armor. Buddy cop movies are a tried and true genre, and folks with an Amazon Prime subscription were recently treated to another entry: Ángel Manuel Soto's The Wrecking Crew. Critical response praised Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista's chemistry, as well as the epic (and bloody) violence of the R-rated movie. While I enjoyed the movie as a whole, I was shocked by just how many fat jokes were included throughout its 122-minute runtime.

While CinemaBlend's The Wrecking Crew review criticized the movie for being formulaic, I enjoyed watching all the pulse-pounding action play out from the comfort of my home. Jason Momoa is as charismatic as ever, and it was fun to watch him literally throwing his enemies around. I just wish his character, Jonny Hale, didn't make so many fatphobic jokes.

The Sheer Number Of Fat Jokes In The Wrecking Crew Was Baffling

When we meet Jonny and James Hale in The Wrecking Crew they're battling some demons. Momoa's character in particular, who is shown to be insensitive enough for his girlfriend, Valentina (Morena Baccarin), to leave him. I mean, he forgot both her birthday and the fact that she speaks Portuguese. So, when the hulking police officer makes a fat joke at the expense of one of Mr. K's goons, it at least felt character-driven. Jonny is a scoundrel, so it makes sense that he might not be sensitive in regards to people's physical appearance.

The problem is that Momoa's character keeps making fat jokes throughout the entire movie. I counted four when streaming the movie on Amazon, but it's possible that there were more, or that some ended up on the cutting room floor. I am baffled that writer Jonathan Tropper and director Ángel Manuel Soto would purposefully chose to make so many of these types of jokes.

You can call me woke all you want, but it's 2026 and we now understand the harm of making fat jokes both in life, and especially in film and TV productions. Representation matters, and I can't imagine how many people were offended by the constant supply of fatphobic jokes that made it into the final cut of The Wrecking Crew.

Like I said, if Jonny just made that one joke about Mr. K's henchman I probably wouldn't have batted an eye. But the fact that the movie included at least four different fat jokes made me feel icky. I just think that we've learned enough to not have to make these type of jokes about people's appearances. And, if they are used, they should be done sparingly, and better be funny enough to at least make me laugh. With this film seemingly set up for a sequel, I'm hoping this doesn't continue with future installments.

The Wrecking Crew is streaming now on Amazon as part of the 2026 movie schedule. And if you haven't seen it, buckle up for the surprising amount of times that Momoa calls people fat.

It’s a big year for Jason Momoa, as following the release of The Wrecking Crew to the people signed up for a Prime Video subscription, he still has four more 2026 movie releases lined up. One of those is the new Street Fighter movie, where he’ll play the green-skinned Blanka. Between that and reprising Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison for Another Minecraft Movie next year, he’s carved out a nice video game-centric corner of his resume. In fact, today that corner has expanded with the news that he’s going full action hero for another upcoming video game adaptation.

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have announced that Jason Momoa will lead the film adaptation of Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers. Justin Lin from the Fast & Furious franchise will direct the movie, as well as produce alongside Hutch Parker and Asad Qizilbash. Helldivers is slated for a November 10, 2027 release, but no other details were revealed, including the identity of Momoa’s character.

The original Helldivers video game was released in 2015, and the sequel followed in 2024. Taking place on the dystopic “Super Earth” that’s controlled by a totalitarian government in the future, the franchise takes its name from a team of elite soldiers that protect humanity from three distinct threats: the Bugs, the Cyborgs and the Illuminate. The news of this Helldivers film adaptation follows a little over half a year after Helldivers 2 became playable on Xbox Series X/S.

Helldivers doesn’t follow a specific group of characters, so it’s unclear who Jason Momoa will play in the movie. That said, I think it’s a pretty good bet he’ll play the leader of whatever Helldiver faction we’ll follow along with in the Justin Lin-directed feature. You don’t hire Momoa for a movie like this and have him play a character who’s stuck on the sidelines. Count on whomever he’s playing taking down any Bugs, Cyborgs and Illuminate that cross his path.

The Helldivers movie doesn’t have any opening weekend competition right now, but that will surely change at some point. Other notable movies coming out in November 2027 include the Melissa McCarthy-led Margie Claus, Gremlins 3 and an untitled movie from the Daniels, the Everything Everywhere All at Once directors. Along with the aforementioned Minecraft Movie sequel, next year will also see the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and The Legend of Zelda on the video game movie front.

Although I wasn’t familiar with Helldivers before today, I welcome seeing Jason Momoa in any kind of action movie setting, so I’ll be keeping on how this project is coming along. Next up for him are Animal Friends and Supergirl, which both arrive in June. Street Fighter follows in October, and then he’ll reprise Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Three come December.

Before he was starring in blockbusters like Aquaman, Fast X and The Minecraft Movie, and even before he was performing opposite Emilia Clarke in Game of Thrones, Jason Momoa was best known for playing Ronon Dex on Stargate Atlantis. Momoa joined the Stargate SG-1 spinoff in its second season and quickly became one of its heaviest hitters, figuratively and literally. More than 15 years after Atlantis concluded, the actor recently looked back on his “beautiful time” working on the show, and it has me looking forward to the upcoming Stargate series even more.

Jason Momoa has been making the rounds lately promoting the Prime Video subscription-exclusive The Wrecking Crew, the first of his 2026 movies. While talking with Jonatan Bloomberg from MovieZine, he spent time reminiscing on Stargate Atlantis when Bloomberg shared how much the show’s meant to him and asked if the action experience he gained from there helped pave the way for where his film career went. Momoa started off by saying:

Introduced in the episode “Runner,” Ronon Dex was a soldier who hailed from the planet Sateda and was captured by the Wraith after they attacked his world and killed the woman he loved. Rather than immediately feed on Ronon like the Wraith usually do with their victims, they instead recognized him as being stronger than the average human and made him a Runner, i.e. a target they repeatedly hunt for sport. Upon meeting the Atlantis team, they disabled Ronon’s tracking device and invited him to join them

Whether he was using his own fists, the sword he made from the metal of a Wraith ship, or his unique energy pistol, Ronon Dex could be counted to take down many bad guys alongside the other Stargate Atlantis protagonists. It’s not hard to see how Jason Momoa’s experience on the show led to him taking on action-heavy roles in Hollywood. The actor continued on about those early years:

Jason Momoa remained on Stargate Atlantis for the rest of its five-season run, with the show coming to an end in 2009. All these years later, he still looks back on playing Ronon Dex in a positive light, and it’s safe to say that his career would have turned out much differently if he hadn’t been cast as the character. As he concluded:

Listening to Jason Momoa reflect on Stargate Atlantis reminded me of how it’s been 15 years since the last live-action Stargate show, Stargate Universe, ended after just two seasons. But as already mentioned, that dry spell will be ending at some point with Prime Video’s forthcoming Stargate series. With the exception of Martin Gero being tapped as the showrunner, all we know about this project is that it will be set in the same continuity as the previous Stargate shows rather than a full-on reboot.

Given his movie star status, we can probably rule out Jason Momoa leading this new show, but maybe a guest spot could be arranged for him to reprise Ronon Dex. Feel free to revisit Stargate Atlantis with your Hulu subscription or over on Pluto TV. Catch Momoa in theaters later this year playing Lobo in Supergirl and Blanka in Street Fighter.

It's been nearly nine years since The Vampire Diaries ended, but the supernatural teen drama remains a favorite among fans. The cast of TVD still frequently discuss and pay homage to the series, whether it’s with small, personal reunions, fan convention appearances or personal reflections shared to social media. It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the show's characters. Still, I'm intriguing after learning Jason Momoa and Joe Manganiello read for one major character.

Samantha Highfill, Entertainment Weekly’s executive editor, published a book centering on The CW drama, I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries. For her deep dive into the beloved series, Highfill took an introspective look at the successful series, which spawned two spinoffs and shared excellent behind-the-scenes details by way of exclusive interviews with the cast and crew. Highfill also shared some of the most surprising things she learned while writing the book, including the casting.

It's known that Paul Wesley was nearly permanently cast as Damon Salvatore, a role that ultimately went to Ian Somerhalder before Wesley nabbed the role of Stefan. However, that’s not the surprising casting choice that Highfill discovered. While chatting with co-creator Julie Plec, Highfill found out that Momoa and Manganiello actually read for the role of history teacher and vampire hunter Alaric Saltzman. Of course, the role of Saltzman ended up being played by Matt Davis, who remained with the show for much of its eight-season run.

I honestly cannot imagine either of Manganiello or Momoa portraying Alaric, and I'm actually glad the castings didn't pan out. A big reason for that is because had Momoa landed the part, there's a chance he wouldn't have gone on to play Khal Drogo in the first two seasons of Game of Thrones. For further context regarding his career around the time TVD was being developed in the late 2000s, Aquaman star was coming off his role as Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis. Vampire Diaries could've been a big gig for Momoa, though it could be argued that it might've shifted the trajectory of his career.

Meanwhile, years ago, Joe Manganiello was landing recurring roles in How I Met Your Mother, ‘Til Death and fellow CW drama One Tree Hill. I don’t know about you, but if I had to see Manganiello go from playing bartender and Brooke’s love interest, Owen Morello, on OTH to playing a vampire hunter on TVD, I would've felt some serious whiplash.

There's also the fact that Manganiello had a starring role on True Blood beginning in 2010. Magnaniello played Alcide Herveaux and, if he had gotten Vampire Diaries, the HBO drama series would've been without a key star. I won't lie, it is somewhat interesting to think about how Maganiello and Momoa would've approached Alaric performance-wise. Still, I'd like to think that everything ultimately worked out just fine for both actors, who've certainly had their share of success.

And, of course, Matt Davis ended up playing Alaric Saltzman quite well. Fans can watch his performance by streaming The Vampire Diaries with an HBO Max subscription. Coincidentally, the streamer also contains movies and TV shows that Momoa and Maganiello have starred in.

Defying astronomy, Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa are two stars that have been orbiting one another for years. Over a decade ago, the former took the role of Drax The Destroyer in Guardians of The Galaxy after the latter turned down the chance to audition. Both are featured in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune adaptation, but they never get the opportunity to share a scene. The movie gods seemingly wanted their paths to cross, but I suppose the timing up until now wasn’t right.

Beyond the fact that both men are muscle-bound, well-respected and talented entertainers, they make a natural pair thanks to their respective energies. Bautista is the serious one (with a knack for being so serious that it turns around and becomes comedic), and Momoa offers chaos and dark unpredictability with a wide smile and an outstretched hand making devil horns. They make a perfect contrasting pair – which was has a potency so obvious that the GOTG star himself pitched the idea of a “Lethal Weapon type buddy cop movie” on social media back in 2021.

The end result of that ambition-driven post is Ángel Manuel Soto’s The Wrecking Crew, which is a true mixed back as far as the final product is concerned. Its success is driven by exactly what was predicted at the outset of the project, which is to say that the two stars mesh incredibly well on screen, and the story sets them up with a dynamic into which they viciously sink their teeth. The downside is that screenwriter Jonathan Tropper’s script is nothing more than a collection of dull-as-dirt cliches, resulting in a “mystery” that is a total snore, and the direction is sprinkled with head-scratching details and an immature sense of humor that was far more tolerable in Soto’s PG-13 blockbuster Blue Beetle than in this R-rated adventure.

Bautista and Momoa star as James and Jonny Hale: two estranged half-brothers who reunite in Hawaii following the news that their father Walter (Brian L. Keaulana) has been killed. The death is said to be the result of a hit and run, but Jonny, a tribal police officer in Oklahoma on suspension, is compelled to investigate after a crew of gangsters try to assassinate him in his home, and James, a US Navy Seal, stirs up trouble investigating the van that killed his dad. Their searches collide in Walter’s private investigator office where they meet Pika (Jacob Batalon), his tech-savvy assistant.

From there, the movie unfolds as a checklist of buddy movie tropes in both the search for answers and the hurdles encountered along the way – including a shady land development deal, off-shore bank accounts, an egotistical millionaire (Claes Bang), a no-nonsense Detective Sergeant (Stephen Root), kidnappings of loved ones, and more. There isn’t a single drop of originality to be found in the far-too-long 124 minute runtime.

Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa both do what they do best, but you wish they had better material work with.

Both stars have proven that they are capable of much better performances in much better movies, but they skate by in this one while wholly relying on the base level charms that each has used to become a household name. For example, there is latitude for the movie to get more into James’ military work and experience, with the film actually teasing his special skills in his introduction as he drills soldiers in underwater exercises, but him being a US Navy Seal is really just a means of A) seeing him look sharp in uniform, B) giving him an air of authority, and C) setting up that he knows his way around a gun/how to kick ass. Bautista has a history of really pushing himself as a performer, but here, the gig is coasting on a stern attitude that occasionally bubbles over into rage, and he gets the job done.

As the wild card to Bautista’s straight man, Momoa has the easier gig in The Wrecking Crew, as his job is to be as rambunctious and funny as possible. It’s not quite the Joker-eque show that the star puts on as the big bad in Fast X, but it’s consistently fun to see him arrive at moments of peril and mortal danger with a wicked grin, and he’s clearly having a blast being a wiseass who takes every opportunity to rebel against anyone and everyone.

Major script issues and questionably directorial questions don’t do any favors for the lame plotting.

The film needs its star power, as it needs to do a lot of heavy lifting for a lackluster script and underwhelming direction. For example, Momoa’s Jonny makes for a fun on-screen hang, but the character would be leagues better if he were equipped with legitimate wit and sass; the film’s idea of sharp dialogue is the Oklahoma cop making fat jokes and expressing concerns about “gaslighting” and “being triggered.” It strives to be Shane Black-esque, but it falls well short of that goal.

It’s hard to even deploy the standard “at least the action scenes were cool,” as sequences frequently have strange issues that are so blatant that they take you totally out of the moment: I have never seen a movie render semi-automatic gunfire to be so pitiful, as their on-screen effect can be described as "occasional spark generators.” One sequence with Dave Bautista in the third act is nothing more than a shameless ripoff of the iconic hallway sequence in Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy, and there is a highway chase that is so badly greenscreened that it practically looks set in doors. It earns some points back for its moments of brutality (the horror fan in me loves a kitchen battle that sees Jonny run a cheese grater down a guy’s arm), but problems tend to outshine highlights.

It would be a lie to say that I had great expectations for The Wrecking Crew going in, but I did at least hope that it would be a dumb action movie elevated by the smart sensibilities of its stars, who have shown integrity in the past with their project choices. In the wake of the end credits, I’m left with a feeling of mild disappointment, but I have maintained appreciation for what Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa can do. Unfortunately, that makes the new movie hard to recommend, as you can get that feeling from a lot of other better films and television shows the two actors have made.

The superhero genre is showing no signs of slowing down, but things are changing on the DC side of things. After the DCEU ended with Aquaman 2 (which is streaming with a HBO Max subscription), the new co-CEO James Gunn crafted a new shared universe. Jason Momoa will enter the franchise in the upcoming DC movie Supergirl as Lobo, and he recently compared the two universes (and his possible future as his new character). Let's break it all down.

Fans who watched the DC movies in order saw Momoa do the impossible: making Aquaman actually cool. But he's going from hero to antihero in Supergirl, finally playing the role of Lobo in the process. In a conversation with ScreenRant, he explained a big difference in his experience during the DCU and DCEU, offering:

This certainly sounds like a different experience. With the DCEU, Zack Snyder was originally followed a five-movie plan for the shared universe. Momoa debut as Aquaman in a cameo during Batman v Superman, before getting his grand entrance in Justice League and eventually his pair of solo movies. He always knew this was the strategy, but the Game of Thrones actor's future as Lobo is more unclear.

Later in the same interview, which is promoting his new movie The Wrecking Crew, Jason Momoa went on to share how his possible future as Lobo will depend on the fans, and how Supergirl ultimately does in theaters. As he put it:

What we know about Supergirl is limited, but Momoa's inclusion is one reason why anticipation for Craig Gillespie's blockbuster has been steadily increasing. The Supergirl trailer debuted the character, while some new footage revealed Lobo's full design. But how long the 46 year-old actor is able to play the cosmic bounty hunter remains to be seen.

Exactly how big his role will be in Supergirl is unclear, but it sounds like Momoa had a blast bringing the character to life. He teased what's to come in the DC flick, saying:

We'll have to wait to learn about what this "gnarly" scene contains, but I'm eager to see what Lobo is up to in Supergirl. Fans have wanted to see the character on the big screen for years, especially with Jason Momoa portraying him. It certainly looks like the project will be very different than Superman, which was set on Earth and featured David Corenswet's hopeful and kind protagonist. Instead, we'll be getting a drunken Kryptonian played by Milly Alcock.

All will be revealed when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26th as part of the 2026 movie release list. Hopefully we get more footage of Lobo in action sooner rather than later.

Dave Bautista is not the proverbial spring chicken he once was when he was fighting in the WWF/WWE at the turn of the century – but age has really done nothing to alter his reputation as a powerhouse. He was 49 when audiences first saw him as the extraterrestrial beast known as Drax The Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy, and he has spent his 50s continuing to be a standout big screen heavy, from his classic henchman role in Spectre to the sadistic Glossu Rabban in the Dune movies. His size and strength has been a big part of his career, and Jason Momoa got a full dose of it in the making of The Wrecking Crew.

The two actors play half-siblings on the hunt for their father’s killer in the new movie (which will be available to Prime Video subscribers starting this Friday), but there’s a limit to the brotherly love in their relationship, and Momoa got a first hand taste of just how strong Bautista is. In an interview with Today, the Aquaman actor talked about shooting a fight sequence with his co-star, and while the action is technically fake, that doesn’t mean that the 46-year-old performer didn’t still feel some pain. Said Momoa,

It goes without saying that Jason Momoa isn’t exactly what anyone would call a skinny weakling, but that didn’t stop him from dropping a panicked F-bomb as he recognized the potential danger of Dave Bautista accidentally landing one of his fake punches. He continued,

Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa have a shared credit on their resume thanks to both being a part of the cast of Dune, but they don’t actually have any scenes together in the blockbuster – which makes their collaboration on The Wrecking Crew that much more interesting. Movie history first connected the two stars when Bautista took the role of Drax after Momoa declined an invitation to audition, but the new 2026 film first came together because the former pitched a buddy movie idea to the universe on social media.

Nearly five years have gone by since that original post, but the movie went into production back in October 2024, and now it’s just days away from its streaming premiere. Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto, The Wrecking Crew co-stars and co-starring Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Morena Baccarin and Stephen Root and will be available to watch on Prime video on January 30.

The first month of 2026 comes to an end this week, and it’s been a month of great streaming movies and an even better month for great streaming TV. Still, some top streamers have been holding onto the best for last, as two highly anticipated series and more get underway this week. Here’s what to look forward to steaming this week.

Wonder Man - January 27 (Disney+)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is already set to have a big year with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday, but it will get off to a much smaller start, if you have a Disney+ subscription, with Wonder Man. If nothing else, the show should be entertaining for the return of Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery, but the show might also be important to the larger franchise. We shall see.

School Spirits, Season 3 - January 28 (Paramount+)

The third season of School Spirits may receive something of a boost, considering that Milo Manheim was recently tapped to play Flynn Rider in Disney’s live-action Tangled. If you haven’t watched until now, your Paramount+ subscription will get you the first two seasons of the afterlife mystery series to catch up on before Season 3 arrives this week.

The Wrecking Crew - January 28 (Prime Video)

It seems terribly wrong that a buddy cop movie with Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa is a thing we’re somehow only getting now. The pair play brothers who are both cops, one by the book, the other not so much. It feels like the setup for a perfectly enjoyable action comedy at the very least and perhaps something truly great. If nothing else, it’s a good reason to have a Prime Video subscription.

Shrinking, Season 3 - January 28 (Apple TV)

Shrinking has always been one of the best reasons to have an Apple TV subscription, but Season 3 has a really big reason to watch, as it will see the return of Michael J. Fox to television. Fox, alongside the likes of Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, makes this a must-watch show.

Bridgerton, Season 4 Part 1 - January 29 (Netflix)

One of the best reasons to keep your Netflix subscription finally returns this week when the new season of Bridgerton debuts. Romance fans will likely be glued to their screens as they binge through the first part of the brand new season, which will focus on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and his quest for a good match. The rest of the season drops at the end of February.

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You - January 30 (HBO Max)

It’s the perfect week for indie darling If I Had Legs I’d Kick You to become available with an HBO Max subscription, considering that star Rose Byrne just secured a Best Actress nomination at this year's Oscars. If you missed the movie in theaters, now is the perfect time to check it out.

February has some incredible content in store for us. Next month, Disney+ will bring us the return of The Muppet Show, while Hulu brings us the long-awaited return of Scrubs, and that’s just the beginning.

There’s something great about a buddy cop movie, with the best ones spicing up the action with humor and tension between its leads. That’s what Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista hope to do in The Wrecking Crew, which is set to hit the 2026 movie release calendar on January 28. Critics were able to screen the upcoming action flick, and they’re here to give us some insight into what should be a pretty fun couple of hours.

Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa have come together to play estranged half-brothers James and Jonny Hale, respectively. One is a loose cannon, the other a disciplined Navy SEAL, but they must work together to unravel the mystery behind their father’s murder. Jamie Parker of CBR rates the movie a 7 out of 10, saying it thrives on the chemistry between its leads. The critic hopes this won’t become one of the great buddy cop movies that doesn’t get a sequel, writing:

ScreenRant’s Greg Hermanns also gives the movie 7 out of 10, celebrating the on-screen pairing of Bautista and Momoa. The actors are really what keeps the movie afloat, Hermanns says, with a fairly unoriginal plot and less character development than a two-hour movie should have. The review concludes:

Pete Hammond of Deadline says The Wrecking Crew’s “battle of the brawn” — Jason Momoa definitely hit the gym to get ready for Dave Bautista — might have been better served on the big screen than streaming with a Prime Video subscription to better show off its bloody blows and beautiful Hawaiian setting. Hammond writes:

However, Giovanni Lago of Next Best Picture says the director isn’t successful in balancing the comedic action with the family drama, leaving little for audiences to enjoy. This review of The Wrecking Crew rates the movie 4 out of 10, with Lago writing:

Jacob Oller of Paste also finds a tonal imbalance, saying the movie doesn’t lean into the dumb humor enough to make it feel like everyone was at least having fun while making this mess. Oller gives the movie a D+ and says:

Despite widely varying scores, it seems the critics agree that uniting Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista on-screen was a good idea, even if the premise and script leave something to be desired. The good news is that if you want to check out this buddy action flick, you don’t have far to go. The Wrecking Crew will be available to stream on Amazon’s Prime Video starting Wednesday, January 28.

Supergirl is next on the upcoming DC movies slate, giving Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El the spotlight following her cameo at the end of last year’s Superman. On top of that, this 2026 movie release is also a big deal for seeing Jason Momoa taking on the role of Lobo following his time as Aquaman in the DCEU. We got our first glimpse of Momoa’s Lobo in the first Supergirl trailer last month, and there’s already some new footage to absorb to accompany the Dune alum giving an amazing one-word response about playing the character.

This comes to us straight from DC Studios, with the video first showing Jason Momoa giving his reaction about taking part in Supergirl as Lobo, then giving us some new moments with the DC Universe’s take on the Main Man. See for yourself:

“Finally” sums it up nicely, and the cigar is also a cool touch. You have to remember that Jason Momoa was chomping at the bit to play Lobo even before he was cast as Aquaman. That’s not to say that playing Arthur Curry, one of the founding members of the Justice League, wasn’t a big deal, especially considering that 2018’s Aquaman is still DC’s highest-grossing movie of all time. But Momoa has been a fan of the Czarnian bounty hunter from the comics for ages, not to mention how many people fancast him in the role. Then at the end of 2024, it was finally confirmed that Momoa would bring Lobo to life in Supergirl.

This is the second time Lobo has been portrayed in live-action, with Emmett Scanlan previously playing him in the TV show Krypton. Needless to say, though, that Supergirl will be many people’s first exposure to Lobo, so it’s great that he’s being played by someone who’s so passionate about the character. Specific details about how Jason Momoa’s Lobo fits into Supergirl haven’t been revealed yet, though. He didn’t appear in the comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which this movie is adapting, so it’s anyone’s guess how he’ll cause trouble for the Kryptonian superhero.

Supergirl sees Kara celebrating her 23rd birthday by traveling across the galaxy with Kryptn. However, her partying will be interrupted when she meets Eve Ridley’s Ruthye Marye Knoll, who’s on a mission to exact vengeance on Matthias Schoenaerts’ Krem of the Yellow Hills, her father’s murderer. The cast also includes David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, Ferdinand Kingsley as Elias Knoll, and Diarmaid Murtagh as Drom Baxton, as well as David Corenswet reprising Superman, a.k.a. Kal-El/Clark Kent.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl will deliver to us the first cinematic Lobo and much more on June 30. After all these years of Jason Momoa enthusiastically pitching himself as Lobo, I’m looking forward to seeing what he does as the character and will also cross my fingers we see more of him in the DCU.

Saturday Night Live’s first episode back from the Christmas break was filled with quite a few fun little surprises. More specifically, it was overflowing with cameos. Some of them, like host Finn Wolfhard’s longtime Stranger Things cast members Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin, were delightful but not altogether shocking. Others like Sabrina Carpenter and Jason Momoa, however, felt like they came from the Upside Down.

Momoa’s appearance in particular was a doubletake situation. He randomly appeared in a fake trailer for a Harry Potter and Heated Rivalry crossover called Heated Wizardry. Thankfully, SNL gave him the perfect character to play: Hagrid. Momoa’s obviously no stranger to facial hair, and he’s got that Hagrid-like size and rugged masculinity to pull the role off. Given the subject matter, however, he takes the groundskeeper in a much sassier, “old queen” direction. You can watch the sketch that is quickly going viral in full below…

I’m always here for a good sex pun, and I’m especially here for ones taking a shot at Neville Longbottom, who is my least favorite character in the entire Harry Potter Universe. I’m also here for any and all unexpected Jason Momoa cameos. He is an absolute delight, and I love how he always jumps into the deep end and just goes with any subject matter he’s given. He’s like a host version of Kenan Thompson, who coincidentally is also fantastic here as Mad-Eye Moody.

Harry Potter is, of course, not exactly new subject matter for Saturday Night Live. The show has gone to Hogwarts and its surrounding world numerous times in the past and even once dressed up the recently departed Bowen Yang in an elf costume that would not stay on. Perhaps the most famous example of the show getting its wizard on is Lindsay Lohan’s famous Hermione’s Growth Spurt sketch, which is one of the most watched sketches in the show’s history.

One of SNL’s strongest attributes has always been the willingness of celebrities to appear on the show. Obviously showrunner Lorne Michaels has been able to pull A-list guest hosts throughout its run, but there are also thousands of examples of random celebrities stopping by to cameo as a celebrity or just to appear in a random sketch. It adds a fun, unpredictable element to the show, as you never know who might show up.

Sabrina Carpenter was the other completely out of left field example this week. She reprised her role in the recurring favorite Snack Homiez, much to the delight of her fans who got to see her play the same teenage boy role when she hosted earlier this season. She’ll definitely be back again at some point in the future.

I'm sure Momoa will be back again too. He's hosted the show twice and made a handful of additional cameos. He's clearly a favorite of the writing staff and the fanbase. Fingers crossed next time he comes back, we'll get him as some more unexpected pop culture characters.

Since A Minecraft Movie became the No. 5 highest-grossing movie worldwide in 2025, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. decided to greenlight a sequel among the growing number of upcoming video game adaptations before the year had wrapped up. According to Jason Momoa, the script is already getting together without a hitch, and he’s such a fan of Minecraft 2 so much that he had a rare experience reading what’s on the page.

When Momoa was asked about the sequel this week, he lit up at the mention of it. Here’s what he said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon:

The script for the not-yet-titled Minecraft 2 is being written by Jared Hess and Chris Galletta, who both worked on the first movie. Hess is also returning as director, per Deadline.

Just ahead of A Minecraft Movie’s release in April 2025, critics started raving about how it “delivers genuine laughs” and how “stupidly hilarious” it is. It was also a notably fun experience for families in theaters for being a good mix of heartfelt, imaginative and goofy. Oh, and then there's the fact that audiences started throwing popcorn at the mention of "chicken jockey!" during showings.

Low and behold, the comedy adventure became a big hit with audiences, soaring to a box office haul of $958.3 million. On the domestic front, it was the highest-grossing movie of the year over Lilo & Stitch, Superman, Jurassic World: Rebirth and Zootopia 2 (which round out the top five). One study cited that Gen Alpha’s love for moviegoing is one reason it was a hit.

Along with Momoa getting to use his comedic chops for the movie, it’s full of funny people like Jack Black, Danielle Brooks and Jennifer Coolidge. During the same interview, Momoa also said this about what it’s like to film a comedy after doing primarily action movies and TV. In his words:

Momoa also said he thought there was “no way” the movie would become such a success, but here is is already getting ready for the sequel. He suggested that the A Minecraft Movie followup could go into production in April ahead of its release date set that has been set for July 23, 2027 which means it will come out the same month as the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow and A Quiet Place Part III.

Shortly after its premiere, Game of Thrones became a HBO show that got the world talking. Clearly GoT fans are pleased about seeing Khal Drogo and Khaleesi back together, even if its while promoting their various projects on The Kelly Clarkson Show. That's why the comments section is filled with folks repeating the couple's phrases like "moon of my life."

While Game of Thrones ended back in 2019, fans have recently been able to return to Westeros through a variety of spinoffs. First came House of the Dragon, which features the Targaryens warring with each other at the height of their power. And while some folks are keeping track of who has which dragon on that show, we'll soon be treated to another prequel: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Luckily our wait for that show is nearly over.

It wasn’t always a forgone conclusion that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series would be a trilogy, but thankfully, we are getting a third movie during the 2026 movie schedule. Dune: Part Three, as it’s simply titled, will be a continuation of the previous movies. Tickets for the movie went on sale in May, which means we're inching ever closer to the release of the conclusion of the trilogy.

The upcoming book-to-screen adaptation based on the second novel in the Dune series by author Frank Herbert, Dune: Messiah, is getting closer. We've seen the first trailer, and now a second trailer has dropped in July 2026. We know who is reprising their roles from the previous Dune movies, which you can catch with an HBO Max subscription, and who is joining the franchise. Here's everything we know about the movie.

When Will Dune: Part Three Be Released?

Warner Bros. has announced that Dune: Part Three will be released on December 18th, 2026. The movie was shot in IMAX, according to Variety, making this the first Dune movie to be filmed with the large-format cameras, though the other two were released in the format after post-production work.

In fact, because it was shot in IMAX, it appears to have an advantage going into opening week. You see, it's not the only big movie getting released on December 18th. Avengers: Doomsday is also dropping that very same day, setting up a fascinating duel at the box office that we rarely see these days.

A big part of that duel (which some fans have dubbed "DunesDay") will be which will be on the most IMAX screens, and it seems that, at least at the moment, Dune: Part Three has the advantage because it was shot in the format, and Doomsday was not. Recently, theater owners have bristled at both movies competing for audiences and screens, but no one appears to be budging, and tickets for select screenings of Dune Part Three in IMAX are now on sale.

The Dune: Part 3 Trailer

As is the case with any good trailer, there is a lot to unpack (blonde Robert Pattinson??), and a lot of questions that we probably won't have answers for until DunesDay. Are Paul and Chani really back together, because they were definitely NOT at the end of the last installment? If they are, where does that leave Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh)? Those are just the most basic questions!

A second trailer, which dropped in July, doesn't answer any questions either, of course, but we do get some fresh looks at a lot of characters.

Who’s In The Cast?

Much of the cast is returning from the first two movies, plus there are a few exciting additions to the cast.

Timothée Chalamet As Paul Atreides

Timothée Chalamet is returning as Paul “Muad'Dib” Atreides in Dune: Part Three. Chalamet led the first two movies as the central character in the Dune series, so of course, he’s back for this one. Since starring in Dune and Dune: Part Two, Chalamet’s star has only grown brighter, and it’ll be great to see him back in this role that I think he performed outstandingly.

In February 2026, Chalamet opened up about how excited he was to make this third movie after gaining more and more confidence after the previous two. He spoke with Matthew McConaughey at an event for CNN and Variety:

"Taking a big swing" is exactly what fans of the books want to hear, and it hopefully means big things for the adaptation.

Zendaya As Chani

Like Chalamet, Zendaya will be back reprising her role as Chani, Paul’s Fremen lover. While she had a pretty limited role in the first movie, she was a huge part of Part Two, and that will continue here.

Florence Pugh As Princess Irulan

Princess Irulan has a big role in the book Dune: Messiah, so Florence Pugh, who appeared in the second Dune movie, will likely have more to do here.

Robert Pattinson As Scytale

CinemaBlend’s Eric Eisenberg theorized Robert Pattinson could be the character Scytale, and now, after the trailer, it's confirmed. Pattison appears with blonde hair in the trailer, and he looks as menacing as Scytale should. With the caliber of cast members that Dune has, a big name in the role is no surprise.

Anya Taylor-Joy As Alia Atreides

One of the most exciting additions to the cast is only sort of an addition. Anya Taylor-Joy appeared in Dune: Part Two, but mostly just her voice was heard, with a few fleeting images. Her character, Alia Atreides, Paul’s sister, was still in utero in the second movie of the trilogy. This time, she’ll have a full role to play, and it’s one of the best characters in the story.

Jason Momoa As Duncan Idaho

We won’t spoil too much here if you’ve never read Dune: Messiah, but yes, Jason Momoa will be back, and he’ll once again be playing fan-favorite Duncan Idaho (or, at least a version of him). Momoa was one of the most beloved characters in the first movie, just as he is among book fans, so it’ll be great to see him once again after he died in the first movie.

Josh Brolin As Gurney Halleck

Gurney Halleck, being played again by Josh Brolin, is one of the few characters we didn't see in the trailer (at least, one we could tell was definitely him). Gurney is a fan favorite, and it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role other than Brolin here.

Rebecca Ferguson As Lady Jessica

This is an interesting one because Lady Jessica, Paul’s mother, doesn’t really play a part in Dune: Messiah, but Rebecca Ferguson will be reprising her role. She teased a little about the part recently, saying it was a small role, but that “Denis had a little idea.” What that idea could be, I can’t wait to find out. She was wonderful as Jessica in the first two movies.

And finally, at least for now, we know that Paul's children, Leto II and Ghanima, will be played by Jason Momoa's son, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, and Silo actress Ida Brooke, respectively. Charlotte Rampling will reprise her role of Reverend Mother Mohiam as well.

Dune: Part Three Is Based On The Book Dune: Messiah

For those who haven’t read the book, we’ll keep the spoilers light here. Dune: Part Three is based on the second book in the Dune series, Dune: Messiah, by author Frank Herbert. The book, published in 1969, is as well regarded by fans as the original Dune novel. It is set about 12 years after the events of Dune, and Paul is now emperor. That doesn’t mean all is well in the universe. In fact, Paul has unleashed something in the Fremen that even he can’t control, and it threatens everything.

Dune: Messiah is a shorter book than Dune, but Villeneuve will probably still have to make some serious decisions on what to cut. Given how enthusiastic he’s been about these adaptations, I think it’s fair to trust him on what is critical and what can get cut, but it’s going to be tough for fans of the book, no matter what he cuts.

Could There Be A Dune: Part Four?

We’re going to get a little ahead of ourselves here and start wondering about a 4th installment. The answer is murky, to say the least. For starters, Villeneuve’s next project after Dune: Messiah is the next James Bond movie. Bond 26 is loosely scheduled for 2028, so it’s unlikely that if there is a fourth film, Villeneuve will be directly involved.

That’s not to say it is impossible. There is plenty of rich story left to tell in the Dune universe (the original series is six books by Herbert), so a fourth is certainly possible, likely with another director at the helm. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We're only about months from being back in the Dune universe, and all will be right with the world.

The recent release of the Supergirl trailer is getting fans excited for the new film. Not only is this because it will mark the first movie based on the character since 1984, but it will also bring Jason Momoa back into the fold of the DC Universe, but in an entirely different role. He’ll be playing intergalactic mercenary Lobo rather than Aquaman, which, as the man once said, is the role he always thought he was playing at the beginning.

Jason Momoa Thought He Would Play Lobo Before He Played Aquaman

Back in 2023, alongside the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the swan song of the previous DC Extended Universe, Jason Momoa spoke openly about his belief that when he was originally called in to talk about appearing in the franchise, he would be playing Lobo. Now, with our first look at Lobo in the Supergirl trailer, the video is making the rounds again, getting reposted nearly everywhere because now Momoa as Lobo is real. If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out below (via Fandango).

Momoa explains that after auditioning for the role of Batman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, he was called in to talk to Warner Bros. Since Ben Affleck had already been announced as the Caped Crusader he assumed they wanted him to play the villain, and since, as Momoa himself points out, he looks absolutely right to play Lobo, he assumed that was the deal.

He admits he didn’t think playing Aquaman was the right role for him, but once it was explained to him, he bought in. Aquaman would cameo in Dawn of Justice before appearing in Justice League and two Aquaman movies, the first of which is still the highest-grossing DC movie ever made.

“They Called”

Jason Momoa said in the above video that if he were ever asked to play Lobo, he would be there. It wasn’t even very long after James Gunn and Peter Safran were officially announced as the new co-heads of DC Studios that Momoa posted a cryptic video that indicated that he’d had a meeting with them, and the result was something very exciting. A year ago, it was confirmed that the actor would be playing Lobo in Supergirl.

It’s not surprising that so many people are resharing this video right now. It’s not uncommon for fans to decide that a particular actor would be perfect for a certain role, or for the actor themself to talk about wanting to play a particular character. It is, however, somewhat rare for it to actually happen. Jason Momoa is clearly excited to be playing the role he always thought he’d have. We’ll get to see how well it works when Supergirl hits theaters next summer.

Yesterday was a pretty nice day for fans of brand new movies based on popular franchises. It was also a pretty nice day for fans of Jason Momoa, and probably an even better day if you happen to be the actor himself. We got our first look at two movies in which Momoa will be a major player, even if we didn’t actually get that great look at the characters he’s playing.

Yesterday, we got the first trailer for the new Supergirl movie, which will see Jason Momoa trade in his Aquaman orange for the intergalactic biker leather of Lobo. A few hours later, we got the first look at the upcoming Street Fighter movie, and while Momoa’s character Blanka was sadly lacking there, the film’s Instagram page dropped his character poster for all to see.

There seems to be a lot of teasing going on when it comes to Jason Momoa in these movies. Blanka only got the character poster for Street Fighter. Meanwhile, we got only the briefest look at Lobo in the trailer, cloaked in shadows, but it was better than nothing.

Momoa himself celebrated his debut in the Supergirl trailer. The reveal of Blanka wasn’t only a big deal for fans. It was also seemingly a big deal for Jason Momoa and the other stars of the Street Fighter movie.

Momoa posted a couple of videos to his Instagram Stories of him showing off the character poster to other members of the Street Fighter cast, and it’s clear that, likely due to some significant CGI being involved, nobody actually knew what Blanka would look like in the movie until now.

While the two teasers dropped on the same day, that doesn’t mean the movies will be doing the same. Supergirl is set for release this summer, while Street Fighter is nearly a year away, set to hit screens in October. That's going to be a long time for fans to wait to get to see both of these characters, but it seems all but certain that Jason Momoa will be kicking some serious ass in 2026.

Did you see the Supergirl trailer? Our first look at this summer release for the 2026 movies schedule arrived earlier today, giving us a taste of what awaits Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El following her cameo at the end of Superman. But if you were paying close attention, you also noticed the preview for the upcoming DC movie gave us a quick glimpse of Jason Momoa as Lobo. The former Aquaman actor has sounded off about his look at the Czarnian bounty hunter being revealed, right as fans are raving about his role in Supergirl.

For years, Momoa shared his desire to play Lobo, especially after his time as Aquaman in the DCEU ended. His wish came true when he was officially cast in Supergirl at the end of 2024, and a year later, we finally know how he looks as the character (following his failed attempt to show us this during the Minecraft junket). Here’s what Momoa had to say about the big moment on his Instagram Stories:

Jason Momoa is the second actor to play Lobo in a major live-action production, following Emmett J. Scanlan in the short-lived TV series Krypton. However, it’s safe to say that Supergirl will be many people’s introduction to the character, and Momoa is clearly jazzed that we’re finally getting to see him playing The Main Man. Unfortunately, Lobo is only noticeable for literally one second in this teaser trailer, so hopefully the next Supergirl trailer can feature him just a teensy bit more.

Beyond it being inevitable that he’ll get into a scrap with Kara Zor-El, we don’t have any specific details on how Lobo fits into the Supergirl story. What we do know is that Jason Momoa and Milly Alcock are joined in the cast by Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, Ferdinand Kingsley as Elias Knoll, and David Corenswet reprising Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman. Craig Gillespie directed the movie from a script written by Ana Nogueira.

Fans who have spent years watching the DC movies in order were recently treated to a new shared universe courtesy of co-CEO James Gunn. The first slate of projects is titled Gods and Monsters, and will once again occupy the big screen with Craig Gillespie's Supergirl. Fans have been curious about the upcoming DC movie ever since star Milly Alcock cameod in Superman, and she takes center stage in the recently released first trailer for Supergirl. The footage features the drunken title character, cool cosmic adventures, as well as glimpse at Jason Momoa's Lobo.

What we know about Supergirl has been limited, so the above trailer is sure to quickly go viral. It opens on a hungover Kara Zor-El, who has seemingly been partying throughout space since we last saw her. Luckily she's got Krypto with her, so she's not completely alone... although her training of the superpowered dog definitely leaves something to be desired.

Eventually she meets a character named Ruthye Marye Knoll, played by actress Eve Ridley. This pair seemingly sticks together through various cosmic conflicts. I assume that Lobo is tasked with hunting them down, making way for Momoa to make his DCU debut following his tenure as Aquaman (which is streaming with a HBO Max subscription).

While Marvel is known for its tight security, it's safe to say DC is also operating with caution. This teaser is careful not too reveal too much about Supergirl, which should allow for the movie's surprises to still hit when it arrives over the summer. Aside from Krypto there doesn't appear to be any returning characters in the blockbuster, although some fans might be holding out hope for David Corenswet's Clark Kent to make an appearance. After Alcock's cameo in Superman, why not return the favor?

The most heart-tugging moment from this teaser (aside from everything Krypto does) has to be the way Kara spoke about the destruction of Krypton. Because while Clark Kent was just a baby when he was saved and sent to Earth, Milly Alcock's character was a young woman. She's clearly plagued by memories of her planet's death, which I have to assume is part of the reason why she's relying so much on drinking throughout the cosmos.

It looks like Supergirl will take us to a few different strange planets, and I have to wonder if/how her abilities are affected by those travels. Kryptonians get their power from the Yellow Sun, so if Kara and her dog travel somewhere else, could she end up powerless? This might be an interesting way to keep the action sequences with appropriate stakes, while also showing her fighting abilities while not depending on God-like powers.

All will be revealed when Supergirl hits theaters on June 26th as part of the 2026 movie release list. For now fans can re-watch the first three DCU projects over on HBO Max including Superman.

One of the biggest twists from 2023’s Fast X wasn’t something from the movie itself, but rather its production in real life. Just one week into filming, Justin Lin, who’d directed five of the previous Fast & Furious movies, departed the blockbuster, resulting in Louis Leterrier taking over helming duties. At the time, it was reported that this move stemmed from “creative differences” with franchise lead Vin Diesel. Now new details have come out about why Lin left Fast X, and they come with some wild reveals about scrapped plot points involving Jason Momoa’s Dante.

In an excerpt from Indiewire for the unauthorized book Welcome to the Family, which releases this week and covers the history of the Fast & Furious franchise, it’s mentioned that a “key source of discord” between Justin Lin and Vin Diesel, as well as actor’s sister/fellow producer Samantha Vincent, “centered around the script and its ending.” Specifically, there were drafts of the Fast X script where it was revealed that Dominic Toretto’s son, affectionately referred to as “Little Brian,” was actually the biological son of Dante, the movie’s main antagonist. While some thought this was “the perfect, if deeply dark, way,” for Dom to grapple with the concept of family, in that he’d be protecting a boy who wasn’t biologically his own, others, including Diesel, didn’t approve of the twist.

So had this made it into the final version of Fast X, that means that Little Brian’s biological mother, the late Elena Reves, would have had a thing going with Dante Reyes. I’m not sure how this would have worked on the Fast & Furious timeline considering that Elena got pregnant with Brian sometime prior to Fast & Furious 6, when she and Dom were still an item, and after Dante had already been injured during the bank vault heist sequence depicted in Fast Five. Also, I find it hard to believe that Elena would have gotten romantically involved with Dante since he was the son of crime lord Hernán Reyes and she was one of Rio’s few incorruptible police officers.

On top of all this, Welcome to the Family also shares that Justin Lin and Universal disagreed over the former’s idea for Fast X’s final action set piece, which would have “involved Dante using a giant excavator-like machine to wreak havoc.” Going this route would have propelled the movie’s production budget even higher, and Alexander Witt, a second-unit director who worked on Fast X, had this to say about the kibosh being put on this sequence:

I agree with the sentiment of this sounding too Transformers-y, although like Witt noted, the final action sequence still ended up being a CGI fest, so one could argue it was a lateral move. In any case, eventually a “heated closed-door meeting” with Universal convinced Justin Lin he needed bow out of directing Fast X. As noted in the book, this stands out from previous instances of directors leaving major movies, like Phil Lord and Chris Miller on Solo: A Star Wars Story and Bryan Singer on Bohemian Rhapsody, because Lin left on his own accord instead of being fired by the studio.

Justin Lin was still credited as a producer on Fast X, but his time with the franchise is now over. He returned to the filmmaking space with Last Days, which premiered on the 2025 movies calendar last month, and he’s set to direct the film adaptation of Keanu Reeves’ BRZRKR for Netflix. Fast & Furious 11, which Louis Leterrier is returning to direct, still doesn’t have a release date, but Vin Diesel posted an optimistic update about its progress several weeks ago.

Even though it may have looked like the 2025 TV schedule would wrap up without an original series co-created by Sons of Anarchy mastermind Kurt Sutter, fear not! The upcoming Netflix series The Abandons will bring his brutal brand of storytelling to the wild west in December. But even before that can get here, we have the fantastic news that motorcycle enthusiast Jason Momoa is teaming up with Sutter for a brand new show!’

Momoa, who led the recently concluded miniseries Chief of War, will once again head up an upcoming Apple TV series, which is where this new project is being developed. Titled Nomad, it stems from Sutter and former colleague Chris Collins, who served as a writer/producer on Sons of Anarchy, as well as on The Wire, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Man in the High Castle. Collins also co-wrote John Wick: Chapter 3, so he’s versed just as much in mythical storytelling as action-packed drama.

That combination should serve this new series’ premise quite well. According to Deadline, Nomad will be set within New Zealand's dangerous underworld, where (presumably) Momoa would play a warrior who finds himself facing the impossible decision of choosing between the two families to eventually embrace his true destiny. It sounds like epic shit through and through.

Both Kurt Sutter and Chris Collins penned the pilot's script, and both will serve as EPs for the new project, which Collins will handle showrunner duties for. Jason Momoa will also serve as an executive producer alongside Brian Mendoza through their production shingle On the Roam.

If it seems like Momoa has way too many upcoming movie projects for this news to be real, that…isn’t that far off from reality. Just check out a non-comprehensive list of what he's got in the immediate pipeline.

I won't be the first to say it, but while hopes are being tossed around, here's one dedicated to Sutter and Collins finding a way to work Sons of Anarchy lead Charlie Hunnam into this new show. We didn't get to see him return for Mayans M.C. as Jax, which made total sense, and he probably wouldn't want to join another motorcycle show given the FX drama's legacy, but wishes don't need to be logical. Also, Hunnam may be too busy filming Monster Season 4 to join any other shows in the near future.

The comic book genre continues to be wildly popular, although things have been changing on the DC side of things. The DCEU (which is streaming in its entirety with a HBO Max subscription) is over, and co-CEO James Gunn has already released the first three installments of the new DC Universe. But fans are still unpacking the previous one, and it turns out that Jason Momoa had a five-word response when landing the role of Aquaman.

The new DCU's first slate of projects is titled Gods and Monsters, and Momoa is set to play a new role with Lobo. But he's still synonymous with playing Aquaman, and making the somewhat silly character into a hulking badass. But during an interview with The New York Times, the 46 year-old actor recalled his first reaction to getting the gig, thinking:

Honestly, can you blame him? DC was taking a risk trying to form its own shared universe, and Aquaman isn't as beloved as other heroes like Batman, Superman or Wonder Woman. After debuting in Justice League, Momoa got his own solo movie, directed by James Wan. But rather than failing, Aquaman became the highest grossing DCEU movie. So luckily he wasn't "screwed" at all.

The success of Aquaman after Justice League's theatrical cut failed to impress was a much-needed boon for the DCEU, and Momoa would end up reprising his role a number of times throughout the shared universe. That includes his Peacemaker cameo, and (of course) his sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Unfortunately, the latter didn't find the same success as its predecessor, mostly because it was the final chapter in a dead shared universe, with moviegoers finding it less imperative to watch as a result.

While the Game of Thrones alum's career as Aquaman went on with a whimper, there's a silver lining: he finally gets to play the cosmic antihero Lobo. What we know about Supergirl is limited, but Momoa has been confirmed to appear in the upcoming DC movie. It's a character he's super passionate about, and I can't wait to see how he factors into the next DC blockbuster.

Exactly what James Gunn has planned for the DCU is a mystery, and I'm very curious to see if/when another actor takes on the role of Aquaman in the burgeoning shared universe. What's more, it would be thrilling if Jason Momoa's Lobo end sup coming face to face with that hero. But at the time of writing this story there's no indication as to when the aquatic hero might debut.

The next DC movie hitting theaters is Supergirl on June 26th as part of the 2026 movie release list. Momoa will make his first appearance as Lobo in the process, so get ready for his return to the superhero genre.

Jason Momoa’s new series Chief of War has received a lot of praise for its portrayal of native Hawaiians, including the use of the Hawaiian language, to tell the story of the island's early colonization. The show also included traditional attire for its characters, and in the case of Momoa's character, it means getting to see a fair amount of his rear end on screen, no complaints. Hilariously enough, quite a lot of cheeky visuals are apparently prominent behind the scenes.

Justin Chon, producer and director of Chief of War, recently took to Instagram to post his favorite memories from the show, now that its run on the 2025 TV schedule has concluded, and it's available to stream in full with an Apple TV+ subscription. However, Chon's favorite memories seemed to carry a certin theme that looked just like Jason Momoa’s ass, as every image and video included in the gallery included a shot of the actor’s butt, and seemingly without Momoa’s knowledge always in play.

As Chon says here, the show probably could have been called Cheeks of War, and it’s difficult to argue based on these images. While a couple of them are clearly meant to be funny, and at one point, Momoa apparently put “Yum Yum” on his ass, which was clearly meant to be a joke. Some of the others clearly were taken by the director when Momoa didn’t even realize he was being filmed.

Honestly, having now seen more of Jason Momoa’s butt than I am comfortable with, I have a lot of questions. Did Momoa and the other stars do any sort of workout for their butts? Not everybody’s rear is going to look good on camera naturally. I’m sure Momoa and others had to work out the other parts of their bodies with trainers in order to be ready to film.

Was this the case with all parts of their bodies? We know Momoa doesn’t love to work out all that much, even if he was willing to shave his head and get tattoos painted on for the series. Perhaps ass workouts weren't outside the realm of pssibilities.

I mean, considering that Momoa, and many of the other actors, aren’t wearing a great deal throughout Chief of War, Justin Chon could have focused on other body parts. It could have been Abs of War or Thighs of War, but then again, I guess that isn’t quite as funny when it's not as accurate.

The highlight of the gallery is a short video which includes Momoa sitting with his bare ass on a cooler that is apparently meant for the director’s beverages It then lingers on Momoa and catches him…uh…adjusting his costume. Even Jason Momoa himself couldn’t help put laugh at that one, as he replies in the comments saying:

While the first part of the video was clearly Momoa having some fun by resting his cheeks on the director’s beverages, the rest was all Justin Chon. In a separate comment, Momoa also calls Chon a “faka,” which is Hawaiian for “fucker.”

He’s having a laugh, but also giving his director a hard time for being so ass-ertive with his image-sharing.
