It’s been almost a year since NBC axed Magnum P.I. after saving it from CBS, and the series ended earlier this year. As one of the many shows ending and/or canceled in 2024, it’s even more heartbreaking knowing that Magnum was just short of hitting 100 episodes. With the series finale in January, the Jay Hernandez-led reboot closed out its run at 96 episodes. However, fans are still hoping that things will change.

Just like when CBS canceled Magnum, fans were quick to hop on campaigns and petitions in an effort to save the reboot once again. Plenty of dedicated fans have taken to social media to get the word out about the cancellation and started a Change.org petition not long after the news broke. Even today, people are still trying to save the show by using #SaveMagnumPI on X (formerly known as Twitter). Whether they’re doing rewatches or simply spreading the word, fans are in desperate need of more. On top of all that, user SMargrey showed off a brand new billboard that fans put together:

Other fans posted about their favorite moments as they rewatched the show while using the hashtag and linking out to petitions to save it. Take MagnumPI_2018 for example:

Trying to save Magnum is not all that fans have been doing. While the first four seasons are streaming on Amazon Freevee, the fifth and final season is not streaming anywhere. The latest episodes were initially available on Peacock as they premiered, but not long after the finale, they were all taken off. It means that Magnum P.I. is once again not available to stream in full anywhere. 

So, alongside #SaveMagnumPI, people are also posting to #MakeMagnumStreamable. It's possible that later down the line, Amazon will add Season 5 to Freevee, as it could take some time to get the rights to it, but for now, only the first four seasons are streaming.

Perhaps the only silver lining about Magnum P.I.’s cancellation is that the series didn’t end on any type of cliffhanger, but there were obviously still stories that needed to be told. Jay Hernandez got “totally honest” about the cancellation, revealing that he didn’t love how the show ended. He has been floating around ideas for a standalone film, which would be a great way to wrap up the series, even if it doesn’t necessarily continue the exact storylines. It would be nice to give Magnum a proper ending, no matter if it’s a film or even just a single episode. Clearly, the fans want it.

With the number of cancellations there are these days, there are always fan campaigns to save shows, even years after it’s ended. Since Magnum P.I. is a reboot, there’s always the possibility that another reboot will happen later down the line or the show as we know it could come back. More Magnum is not completely out of the question, especially if fans continue their campaigns. 

Even though it’s unclear if Magnum P.I. will ever be saved, what is clear is that fans are not going down without a fight. They will continue to post their hashtags, do rewatches, pay for billboards, and much, much more until it finally happens, even if it’s years from now. You never know what could happen.

Magnum P.I. has become the latest series to end, officially airing its two-hour finale on the 2024 TV schedule on January 3. The series fell short of the 100-episode milestone, but there's another milestone they didn't get. With a reboot of Tom Selleck’s popular drama from the ‘80s, you would think that the original Thomas Magnum would make a cameo, especially since the reboot was on the same network as Selleck’s Blue Bloods before its CBS cancellation. However, there’s a good reason why that never came to be.

While Magnum’s series finale was airing, Jay Hernandez, who took over the mantle as the titular private investigator but minus the iconic mustache, responded to fans on X, and he shouted out Selleck and the original series. With Hernandez acknowledging the original series and the man who brought Thomas Magnum to life, why didn’t the two ever work together on the reboot? Showrunner Eric Guggenheim told TVLine that they wanted to be realistic:

It definitely would have been fun to see Tom Selleck on Magnum P.I., even in just a brief cameo. However, it does make sense that they thought it wasn’t possible. Guggenheim didn't specify why they thought it wasn’t possible, but since Selleck is on Blue Bloods, which shoots in New York, and Magnum shot in Hawaii, it definitely would have been hard to get schedules to line up. That doesn’t mean that the actor didn’t give his blessing. Executive producer Peter Lenkov added:

Tom Selleck showing his support for the Magnum reboot is really sweet. Maybe since he wasn’t able to guest star in it, perhaps Jay Hernandez could guest star in Blue Bloods. It may not be the same, but it would be better than nothing. 

Since Blue Bloods is heading into its final season, you never know what could happen. The series is already bringing on familiar faces for the final batch of episodes, maybe Hernandez can be a random criminal the NYPD has to chase down or a detective visiting the Big Apple?

Even though Selleck didn’t appear on the Magnum reboot, the original series is still close to him. There was a Magnum P.I. reunion during Season 13 of Blue Bloods when Larry Manetti appeared on an episode as a grieving grandfather. Manetti starred in the original Magnum as bar owner Rick Wright, so to have the OG Thomas and Rick together again was a nice sight to see. Hopefully, one more reunion happens in the final season, whether it’s the original Magnum or reboot. 

Meanwhile, Magnum P.I.’s premature end didn’t fair too well with Hernandez. He shared on X that he didn’t love the ending, which can be watched with a Peacock subscription, and had floated the idea of a standalone film to wrap everything up. 

Whether or not that will actually happen is unknown, but it wouldn’t be the first time the series was saved. Crazier things have happened. If a film or extra episodes do happen, it would be the perfect way to get Tom Selleck on board. One can dream.

Magnum P.I. has come to an end on NBC in the 2024 TV season after five seasons, despite fan efforts at a rescue and leading man Jay Hernandez pitching an idea for how the show could continue. While any show almost hitting 100 episodes is impressive in this day and age, the 2018 reboot didn't last quite as long as the original series that starred Tom Selleck as the title character for eight seasons. With his show concluding, Hernandez gave a shout out to Selleck that puts a spin on his whole journey as Thomas Magnum. 

Jay Hernandez took to X (formerly known as Twitter) while the series finale was airing on NBC to interact with fans. In response to one who said that they never thought they'd be interested in a reboot of the iconic Tom Selleck series, Hernandez shared:

For all the people who had doubts about a reboot of the show that starred Tom Selleck, it turns out that even Jay Hernandez didn't expect that he'd ever be interested in stepping up as the next Thomas Magnum! Fortunately for fans, he did indeed give it a shot for four seasons on CBS and then one final season on NBC. Even without the Tom Selleck mustache! 

NBC gave the show a solid sendoff by airing two episodes of Magnum P.I. action back-to-back on January 3, both of which are available streaming now with a Peacock Premium subscription. The finale does seem to be the end of the road for the series, although I for one would love to see Hernandez's idea of a standalone movie come together. 

If Tom Selleck is any example, a starring role on Magnum P.I. can lead to a long and successful career on the small screen. The actor spoke about never expecting to get as "lucky again" as he was with Magnum running for eight seasons and nearly 200 episodes on CBS. As any fan of Blue Bloods can attest, the Hawaii-set show certainly wasn't the end of his time in long-running TV shows! 

While Blue Bloods is confirmed to end after the upcoming Season 14, the final credits will roll after nearly 300 episodes with Tom Selleck as Commissioner Frank Reagan. His plans for after Blue Bloods reportedly include retirement rather than pursuing another drama with the potential to run for hundreds of episodes. Fans of both Blue Bloods and the original Magnum P.I. got a treat back in the spring, when Selleck's former Magnum co-star Larry Manetti arrived on the CBS drama as a guest star.

The first four seasons of Jay Hernandez's show are available streaming on Amazon Freevee for free with ads, and all eight seasons of Tom Selleck's show are on the same service. Sadly, Magnum P.I. has come to an end for the second time, as NBC's rescue following CBS' cancellation only lasted for a single season. As promised by showrunner Eric Guggenheim, the series finale didn't end on a life-or-death cliffhanger and the characters were happy together by the time the final credits rolled. Still, now that Jay Hernandez has shared his honest thoughts on the cancellation, I think plenty of fans (myself included) will agree with him.

How The Series Finale Finished The Story

Called "The Big Squeeze," the series finale was the second of two episodes that aired on January 3, and it featured the return of Patrick Fabian as Sam Bedrosian for the first time since his debut in Episode 16 when he became Magnum and Higgins' (Perdita Weeks) new nemesis. Bedrosian proceeded to blackmail them with a recording of them breaking the law in the penultimate episode, and they had to find a way to close the case without being burned in the process. 

It was probably a sign that fans should prepare for a heavy episode when the shenanigans over Higgins discovering what she thought was an engagement ring intended for her were resolved early in the episode. Her panicked attempt to avoid Magnum was calmed when he told her that the ring in his dresser was Rick's (Zachary Knighton) and intended for Suzy (Betsy Phillips) after their romantic payoff earlier in Season 5. Throw in T.C. (Stephen Hill) getting ready to expand Island Hoppers and Kumu (Amy Hill) buying into La Mariana, and the finale had a pretty happy ending for the supporting players, if not quite closure.

Magnum and Higgins' futures were less certain, as there was no saying what blowback they'd face from their decision regarding Bedrosian. Their final scene was sweet, however, as Magnum reassured Higgins that he knew who she was when they got together and wasn't upset at her reaction to the proposal confusion. She confessed that if the day comes when he does propose, she'll say yes.

Was it a perfect ending for me? Not quite, but that's largely because it was abrupt and I'd been looking forward to Bedrosian as the new nemesis ever since Jay Hernandez previewed him to CinemaBlend back in the spring of 2023. At the time, the actor suggested that the troublesome new character could cause problems "even further into the show as a whole if we get picked up for the sixth season." Plus, how am I supposed to ever want less of Magnum and Higgins together?! Oh, what might have been!

Jay Hernandez's Idea For Continuing Magnum P.I.

The leading man had been quiet about the cancellation of Magnum P.I. ever since the sad news broke over the summer, even as other stars spoke out. Finally, just in time for the last-ever episode, Hernandez took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to reveal an idea that he'd pitched for a way the show could continue even though it didn't get the Season 6 renewal. He wrote:

Jay Hernandez admitted to not loving that the show ended "how it did," and I can admit that I absolutely love the idea of a standalone film to follow up on the series finale. A second rescue for a sixth season seemed increasingly unlikely after some comments from showrunner Eric Guggenheim, but why not a one-off movie to tie off some loose ends and give a more ceremonious ending than "The Big Squeeze" delivered? If NBC's Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist could do it, why not Magnum P.I.?!

Okay, yes, I know that Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist and Magnum P.I. are extremely different shows, but I think the idea of a standalone Magnum movie is going to be on my mind for the foreseeable future after Hernandez shared the idea. I don't know that it's particularly likely, but it is nice to see more of the star's passion for the project. Plus, fans can enjoy his kind words of gratitude for their dedication. 

I certainly can't say what the odds are of Magnum P.I. ever returning in any form, but I'm going to take a little bit of heart from Eric Guggenheim's response to TVLine when asked about what his ideal series finale would have looked like. He simply said:

Am I grasping at straws to read anything about Magnum P.I. having a future that the showrunner doesn't want to spoil into that sentence? Perhaps, but there's no harm in speculating now that the NBC run has ended and the 2024 TV schedule will continue without Magnum, Higgins, and the rest. Only time will tell if Jay Hernandez's idea for a standalone movie comes to anything.

Magnum P.I. only just returned in the 2023 TV schedule in October, and the show is quickly running out of episodes of the fifth and final season. In fact, after going off the air for an extra week due to NBC scheduling, a grand total of five episodes are left before the final credits roll. So, as I spent a Wednesday night without seeing Thomas Magnum, Juliet Higgins, and the rest in action, I realized that there are still several questions that need answers before the end. 

In fact, a number of those questions were ones that I was already asking following the nerve-wracking Season 5 spring finale and ahead of the Season 5B premiere. I had no fewer than nine, and while some have been answered – like whether Rick and Suzy would get back together – and others are no longer relevant, I'm still waiting on several of the others after some recent twists. So, let's look at the questions that are running out of time to be resolved!

What New Character Was Jay Hernandez Talking About?

When I spoke with leading man Jay Hernandez back in the spring prior to the recently-resolved SAG-AFTRA strike, he previewed something mysterious for the second half of Season 5: a character who comes into Magnum's life and "is going to be causing him a lot of problems for a number of episodes." At my count, there are only five episodes left and no character who I think fits Hernandez's tease, so I ask again: who is this character who is supposed to cause problems?!

How Much Will T.C. Recover?

Technically, I was wondering about whether Stephen Hill's character would ever walk again when I first starting wondering about Season 5B, but I think there's still the question of how much he'll recover emotionally as well as phsyically. Mahina broke up with him in the most recent episode as a result of his behavior after he was hospitalized, and it'll somewhat defy belief if he's really 100% physically recovered. I just want to know if T.C. will get a happy ending, dang it!

Will Higgins Be Pregnant?

The possibility of a bun in the oven for Higgins was teased in the promos for Season 5B. While I had my doubts that Magnum P.I. would start the fall season with such a huge change for the character, the resolution of the pregnancy scare story very much left the door open for her and Magnum to start a family. Then, they had a very important conversation about kids not too long after. I didn't think Higgins would be pregnant to start Season 5B, but I'm ready to seriously consider if she will be in the series finale... or at least, if she and Magnum will decide to start trying.

Will Magnum P.I. Be Rescued For The Second Time?

A question that has undoubtedly been on the minds of many Magnum P.I. fans ever since the news of the cancellation is whether the permanent end truly is in sight this time. After all, the show was cancelled by CBS before being saved by NBC; could another save be in store? Well, showrunner Eric Guggenheim's comments aren't too promising on that front, although he did also preview that the fifth season isn't going to end on a cliffhanger. Still, another rescue hasn't been ruled out. 

Personally, my dream is for the show to be renewed for at least a four-episode mini sixth season so that Magnum P.I. can hit the 100-episode milestone instead of ending forever at a total of 96. When I spoke with Jay Hernandez in the spring, he was optimistic about making it to 100, but that was unfortunately before the WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike put the entertainment industry on hold. Is this likely? Maybe not, but I'll just hold onto hope until I know otherwise. 

For now, we can only wait and see if these questions that I'm still asking will be answered before the very end. Magnum P.I. returns to NBC's 9 p.m. ET time slot on Wednesdays with a new episode on November 15, and you can revisit the first four seasons streaming on Freevee and the fifth streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription. 

Spoilers ahead for Episode 14 of Magnum P.I. Season 5, called "Night Has a Thousand Eyes."

The fifth and sadly final season of Magnum P.I. is quickly running out of episodes in the 2023 TV schedule, and "Night Has a Thousand Eyes" ended on Higgins and T.C. talking about the future at La Mariana. While the future of the show currently consists of the six remaining installments that were already filmed prior to the beginnings of the WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike, Higgy's words combined with what Jay Hernandez previously told CinemaBlend inspired me about how I really want Thomas Magnum's story to (realistically) end. 

"Night Has a Thousand Eyes" was rough for both Higgins and T.C., with the former benched after failing her P.I. license renewal exam and the latter discovering that neglecting Mahina during his hospital stay wasn't something he could fix now that he was on the road to recovery. The two ended up at the bar at La Mariana together, with Higgins reassuring T.C. that there was no right way to deal with what he went through, although he acknowledged that he handled it the wrong way. She told him:

Now, Perdita Weeks' character may have dropped those lines while trying to make T.C. feel better in the wake of a breakup, but they also sound pretty good to me in the wake of Magnum P.I. being cancelled over the summer. Fans have been hoping and campaigning for another rescue, like how NBC stepped in to save the show after CBS cancelled it following Season 4. That hasn't happened so far, and showrunner Eric Guggenheim's comments weren't too promising. But Higgins talking about the future in "Night Has a Thousand Eyes" reminded me of a milestone that I'd so love to see Magnum P.I. hit.

Season 5 of Magnum P.I. is airing in two blocks of ten episodes, with the second airing this fall after the first aired back in the spring (and is currently streaming for Peacock Premium subscribers). That means the show will conclude with a series finale that also happens to be Episode 96, and I can't be the only one who thinks it's a shame that Magnum's adventures will end for good just four episodes shy of the 100-episode milestone.  

So, an order for a four-episode mini sixth season that could be billed as a finale event would reach that 100-episode mark and be a fitting way to end the series, if it has to end. When I spoke with Jay Hernandez following the spring finale back in April before the cancellation news, he even shared his thoughts on possibly hitting that milestone. He said:

Is it too much to hope for that Magnum P.I. could get just enough episodes after the Season 5 finale to reach 100 episodes? Probably, especially since Hernandez shared those thoughts before the strikes began. Still, FX recently announced a bonus three-part finale event for Archer, which just ended; could NBC or another platform make a similar move for Thomas Magnum? Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist got a bonus special on Roku after it was cancelled, as an example from NBC! 

Regardless of whether fans will be lucky enough to get more of Magnum P.I. beyond the Season 5 finale, the showrunner did already tease that it's not going to end on a painful cliffhanger. Six episodes are still remaining before the final credits roll, so be sure to keep tuning in to NBC on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET to see what's next. The return of Magnum P.I. is quickly approaching, and the teases of what's on the way have promised some big developments for Magnum and Higgins in particular, including an "I love you" that's been a long time coming. The second half of Season 5 will also bring back something that hasn't been featured since the show moved from CBS to NBC: Jay Hernandez playing Magnum playing the White Knight in a reenactment of a Robin Masters story. Before the Season 5 fall premiere will air with the returns of the White Knight and T.R. Belle, let's look back at what Hernandez told CinemaBlend about filming those "so ridiculous" reenactments.

I spoke with the star of Magnum P.I. earlier this year for the spring finale that was quite eventful (to say the least), prior to the WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike. While he was weighing in about the show possibly hitting the 100-episode milestone with a Season 6, I asked for his thoughts on playing the White Knight for the over-the-top and always funny reenactments of Robin Masters' books. Hernandez laughed and responded:

It's safe to say that the reenactments do not get stale, because the normal rules of Magnum P.I. – or, for instance, the rules of gravity and physics – just don't apply when it comes to the adventures of the White Knight and T.R. Belle, the latter of whom is Robin Masters' character based on Higgins. That's more true than ever in the scene that will open the second half of Season 5, according to the fun sneak peek on TVLine, although this one is technically Jin putting his own spin on the characters. 

Interestingly, the clip also mentions T.C.'s friends paying him visits, which suggests that not a whole lot of time has passed since the spring finale left him injured to the point of potentially never walking again. Whether he'll recover beyond the initial prognosis by his doctor remains to be seen, and is just one of several questions to consider in the upcoming ten episodes. 

And sadly, those upcoming ten episodes will be the last of Magnum P.I., unless NBC reverses its decision to cancel or the show is rescued for the second time by another outlet. The first four seasons are available streaming on Freevee now, so perhaps fans can hope for a future there, if anywhere other than its current Season 5 network. Personally, I'm hoping that any platform brings it back for at least a shortened sixth season, since ending with Season 5 puts it just two episodes shy of hitting 100 episodes. The fifth season so far is streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription.

For now, though, fans can look forward to what's ahead with the second half of Season 5 on NBC, which will include at least a pregnancy scare for Higgins and Magnum. Magnum P.I. is also one of few returning scripted dramas that will be able to air new episodes this fall, as production on most other returning scripted shows was unable to start due to the strikes. The Jay Hernandez show had already finished filming Season 5 before the shutdowns began. The wild ride of Magnum P.I. renewals has come to an end, after the series started out on CBS, was cancelled, then rescued by NBC for Season 5 in the 2023 TV schedule, and now cancelled for a second time. While the cast, led by star Jay Hernandez, reprised their roles for the network switch, Magnum and Co.'s second life in primetime would only last for one season. The news also comes after Hernandez opened up to CinemaBlend earlier this year about what he really loves about his show, which fans now know will end after five seasons. 

Magnum P.I.'s Cancellation

Although NBC originally ordered a fifth and sixth season of ten episodes each in 2022 when rescuing Magnum P.I. from CBS' cancellation, that was changed to a 20-episode Season 5. Ten of those episodes are still months away from airing, so Magnum getting the axe over summer hiatus doesn't mean that fans have seen the last of Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, and the rest of the cast in their roles. There is still more to look forward to.

The cancellation news breaking now is likely due to cast options expiring on June 30, according to Deadline, meaning that a decision had to be made sooner rather than later about whether to continue Magnum P.I. into Season 6. The network has decided to cancel rather than renew before the second half of Season 5 or extend the cast's options. Sadly, the cancellation means that Magnum P.I. will end just shy of hitting the 100-episode milestone. 

Speaking with CinemaBlend ahead of the spring finale, Hernandez was optimistic about a renewal to reach 100 episodes, but the WGA writers strike began shortly after and meant uncertain futures across scripted television. NBC previously announced that Season 5B would premiere in midseason of the 2023-2024 TV season. Given that those episodes were filmed before the writers strike, it seems unlikely that 5B will have to be delayed past early 2024. As for what the star said he loves about the show, keep reading! 

What Jay Hernandez Loves About The Show

Timed to the action-packed spring finale of the fifth season that set up some problems for Magnum and Co. in the upcoming second half, Jay Hernandez spoke with CinemaBlend. It was in the wake of the debut of the second episode of Magnum P.I. that he directed, which took Perdita Weeks' Higgins into some uncharted territory. 

During the interview, I asked the star what it was like for him to tackle an episode as a director while also portraying Thomas Magnum. Hernandez responded to say that directing is "just something I really, really, really love doing," and he couldn't "wait to get a chance to do it next season." He also shared that he'd be interested in writing an episode since he knows "the types of stories that we like to tell on Magnum" and "I feel like it would be pretty straightforward" to write for his own show. 

When the discussion turned to the subject of action and flashback sequences, Jay Hernandez was quick to say that he loved tackling those as well. He told CinemaBlend: 

Jay Hernandez went on to say that the flashbacks he loves "just further fill out the character for the audience," noting that this applies for T.C., Rick, and "even Nuzo" as well as his own character. He also shared that there was an idea of "doing a whole flashback mission for one of the episodes next season" if they got the opportunity to do it, and was even interested in directing it. Sadly, short of Magnum P.I. being rescued for the second time, that episode won't happen. 

Since the star never comes across as anything less than enthusiastic about the show, there are undoubtedly plenty more elements of Magnum P.I. that he loves but we just didn't have time to get into in our interview earlier this year. Still, in light of the cancellation, his mentions of hopes for hitting 100 episodes as well as loving to direct and do flashbacks make it even more unfortunate that a sixth season isn't on the way. 

At least fans can count on ten more episodes, and hope that the already-filmed Season 5 finale ends in a way that works as a series finale as well! My fingers are definitely going to be crossed for a happily-ever-after for Magnum and Higgins. And who knows? Maybe a second rescue isn't totally impossible when there are a lot of streamers out there! Would Jay Hernandez Ever Write An Episode?

Jay Hernandez spoke with CinemaBlend ahead of the Season 5 spring finale, shortly after the trippy episode he directed aired on NBC. That was of course before the 2023 WGA writers strike began and put the future of scripted television on hold, and the actor addressed whether he’d be interested in penning an episode of Magnum P.I. one day. Hernandez said:

As Hernandez previously noted, he’s in almost every scene of the show and already directed more than one episode, so who could possibly know Magnum P.I. better after five seasons than him? Add in his experience in writing feature scripts, and it sounds like an episode written by him isn’t out of the realm of possibility someday if the series is renewed for Season 6 to hit a major milestone. The star continued:

The future of scripted television is uncertain at this point in light of the writers strike, the last of which lasted for 100 days. That said, members of the cast (including Zach Knighton on Instagram) were celebrating a wrap on Season 5 back in April, so it seems safe to say that filming has concluded, and the final stages of production can be finished without the strike forcing a halt. And that leads us to…

When Season 5 Is Coming Back

In the midst of spring finale season, NBC has released the fall TV schedule for new and returning shows. Although it’s much too soon for precise dates, we now know which will return in the fall and which will be back in midseason. Unfortunately for Magnum P.I. fans, the Jay Hernandez-led series won’t be back until 2024. 

It’s not altogether shocking after NBC premiered the show as part of its midseason lineup in the 2022-2023 TV season, but a hiatus presumably lasting the better part of a year is still bound to be a bummer for fans everywhere. Still, considering that Magnum P.I. was cancelled by CBS in May of last year, a return with any new episodes at all is still good news. Plus, the first ten episodes of Season 5 are available streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription.

Also returning to NBC in midseason are Law & Order: Organized Crime, La Brea, Lopez vs. Lopez (which recently set up Season 2 with its first season finale), the latest America’s Got Talent spinoff, and Canadian medical drama Transplant after its previous finale in July 2022. Only time will tell when exactly the shows will premiere; in the case of Magnum P.I., hopefully it will be earlier rather than later in the new year.

The first half of Magnum P.I.’s fifth season came to an action-packed ending with the midseason finale that involved some tough realizations for Magnum himself ahead of new problems for when the show returns. Originally, Magnum P.I. was rescued by NBC for a fifth and sixth season after being cancelled by CBS, but that has since changed into one longer Season 5. For now, there’s no confirmation of whether or not a Season 6 will happen, and star Jay Hernandez recently spoke with CinemaBlend about the future of the series and the 100-episode milestone that it’s approaching. 

As of the spring finale on April 23, a total of 86 episodes of Magnum P.I. have aired. When speaking about the spring finale, Jay Hernandez acknowledged that he’d “shot almost a hundred episodes of television” thanks to the show. When I noted to the actor/director that the show would be very close to hitting 100 episodes by the end of Season 5, he shared:

It’s too soon to say if NBC will officially give the order for a Season 6 that would give Magnum P.I. enough episodes to hit 100, but Jay Hernandez at least seems optimistic! As he noted, running long enough to reach that milestone isn’t something that every show manages, let alone one that had to deal with COVID production challenges and then survive a cancellation from its original network.

It’s worth noting that NBC renewed all of its other ongoing dramas for the 2023-2024 TV season (with the three Law & Order and three One Chicago shows in one swoop), so there’s certainly no recent trend of the network cancelling its dramas en masse. Official news about whether or not Season 6 happens just may be a ways off, with half of Season 5 still to go. 

That said, Jay Hernandez shared an idea for a specific kind of episode that could happen if Magnum P.I. returns for Season 6. When speaking to the action sequences of the show, he noted that he loves doing the flashbacks and “it’s so much fun to shoot” scenes that feel “a little different than the, quote unquote, case of the week.” The actor continued:

If a sixth season of Magnum P.I. happens to take Magnum, Higgins, and the rest to that 100-episode milestone, then fans could be in for an episode made up entirely of a flashback. The flashes to the past have been part of the series from the start, and featured in the spring finale in some key ways to explain why Rick was kidnapped while T.C. and Magnum were targeted for assassination. 

So, Season 6 could deliver a flashback episode that would bring Jay Hernandez back as a director after his latest turn behind the camera for a trippy Higgins episode, but what about another reenactment of a scene from one of Robin Masters’ books? I posed that question to the star, who laughed and replied: 

Thomas Magnum is presumably never going to parachute from outer space even if the show runs for much longer than Jay Hernandez previously indicated, but it’s hard to rule out much of anything if Magnum P.I. revisits the adventures of the White Knight! Whether or not fans see another reenactment of a Robin Masters book from the cast of the show, Hernandez once again touched on the fact that the show has almost hit 100 episodes. 

For now, fans can always revisit the first half of Magnum P.I. Season 5 streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription during the wait for the show to return. In the meantime, there are also plenty of other shows on the way in our 2023 TV premiere schedule.

Warning: major spoilers ahead for the spring finale of Magnum P.I. Season 5, called “Charlie Foxtrot.”

The first half of Magnum P.I.'s almost miraculous Season 5 has come to an end, nearly a year after its cancellation by CBS and months after its NBC premiere. The stakes were already sky-high after the penultimate episode of the spring season left a lot of questions to be answered, and “Charlie Foxtrot” delivered some much-needed resolutions. The future is brighter for some characters more than others looking ahead the second half of Season 5, and star Jay Hernandez addressed how Magnum moves forward, the importance of the brotherhood, and a character who could cause problems moving forward. 

Fortunately for fans, T.C. survived the gunshot wounds that he sustained at the end of the previous week’s episode, and Rick managed to avoid being killed long enough for Magnum, Higgins, Katsumoto, and Co. to come to the rescue. Less fortunately, Childs was confirmed to have died in the explosion, and T.C. is facing a long road to recovery without any guarantees of how much he’ll be able to get back to his life before the shooting. The Island Hoppers owner may never walk again.

All in all, Magnum got a wake-up call about how he was careless about his own safety even when he knew that he was one identification away from being targeted by mercenaries. It also wasn’t lost on him that Rick and T.C. were the ones in grave danger after they had taken extra precautions. Plus, he might have been killed if Higgins hadn’t been at Robin’s Nest after experiencing her hallucinations to take his would-be killers by surprise. 

Speaking with CinemaBlend, Jay Hernandez weighed in on whether this wake-up call will stick with Magnum after the first half of the season:

Of course, it wasn’t his fault that the mercenaries went after his friends or even that Childs was killed, but as Hernandez said, Magnum has “a huge heart,” which makes what happened in “Charlie Foxtrot” after he didn’t take more precautions more “hard to swallow.” That’s not to say that having a huge heart is a bad thing, however, as Hernandez continued:

It remains to be seen how much Magnum P.I. will address the aftermath of “Charlie Foxtrot” in the second half of the season, and a lot may depend on if there’s a time jump between the spring finale and whenever Season 5 returns. Whether or not we see much of Magnum trying to “make it better” after what went down in this episode, I did have a related question: does this mean that he would change his password from “DetroitTigersRule’ with 1s for I’s and a 5 for the S? Jay Hernandez laughed and shared:

The show was a little light on laughs in much of the previous episode (which Jay Hernandez directed into “uncharted territory” for Higgins) and the situation was certainly dire to start “Charlie Foxtrot,” so that little bit of humor in Episode 9 is fun to look back on! As the star had previewed, the spring finale ended on a lighter note rather than a huge tone shift, so the break isn’t leaving fans on a cliffhanger of doom and gloom. 

In fact, there was a nice scene toward the end that featured Magnum and Rick going to visit T.C. in the hospital to show that the brotherhood was still alive, well, and thriving, despite everything they’d gone through over the course of the hour. In light of their bond as a trio being highlighted toward the end of the spring finale, Jay Hernandez weighed in on the importance of Magnum P.I. showcasing that bond:

Add this to the list of reasons to hope that Magnum P.I. is renewed for Season 6! The initial renewal order after the last-minute rescue by NBC last year had actually been for two seasons of ten episodes each, which has shifted into one longer fifth season. The star shed more light on a potential episode that would showcase the guys:

Now, with no confirmation of a Season 6 but still half a season to go in Season 5, what elements will carry over into the next batch of episodes and what lies ahead for Magnum and Co.? Jay Hernandez of course didn’t drop all the spoilers of what to expect, but he did preview a character coming in who is going to cause some trouble, saying:

At the time of writing, NBC has not yet announced exactly when Magnum P.I. will return for the second half of Season 5, but I think it’s safe to say after this spring finale that fans everywhere will be hoping for sooner rather than later in the 2023 TV premiere schedule. For now, the ohana can always revisit the earlier episodes of Season 5 streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription as well. 

Magnum P.I. left viewers on a doozy of a cliffhanger with the explosive episode that leads into the Season 5 spring finale on April 23. With T.C. being shot, Det. Childs possibly being blown up, and Magnum unaware that the mercenaries identified him and his friends, there are some big questions in need of answers. Fortunately, star Jay Hernandez spoke with CinemaBlend to preview the upcoming finale, and fans should apparently be nervous about what’s on the way.

The spring finale is called “Charlie Foxtrot,” and comes on the heels of an episode that also put Higgins through the hallucinatory wringer on top of what happened to T.C. and Childs, with Jay Hernandez sharing his thoughts on what Magnum would have made of what she saw when overloaded with drugs. Although the star of course wasn’t going to drop huge spoilers about what’s going to go down, Hernandez previewed an action-packed episode on April 23… and some complications, saying:

If the first five seasons of Magnum P.I. so far have shown anything, it’s that this is a show (no matter whether formerly on CBS or currently on NBC) that knows how to deliver cinematic action on the small screen. While that’s not to say that all the action will work in the favor of the heroes, Jay Hernandez’s tease of ending on “a lighter note” is promising. Whether or not there’s an aftermath to “Charlie Foxtrot” beyond the midseason finale remains to be seen, but the tone isn’t going to completely change. 

With the lives of more than one character in jeopardy before the spring finale even begins, however, a lot is unknown. When asked how nervous he thinks fans should be about what happens next after Episode 9 (which he also directed), Jay Hernandez shared:

It seems safe to say that anybody who caught the penultimate episode when it aired on NBC or streamed it with a Peacock Premium subscription will want to know what happens next, with T.C. seemingly grievously injured at the end and Childs’ fate unconfirmed. When I noted to the star that no other character has their name in the title of the show for some security, he responded: “Right, exactly!” So, fans may indeed want to be a bit nervous!

As the director of the last episode of Season 5 before the midseason finale, Jay Hernandez helmed some of the biggest moments of the show since its move to NBC after intense fan support. He addressed what it was like for him to handle those moments as a director as well as actor, saying:

Magnum P.I. is clearly a lot of work for Jay Hernandez even when he’s not stepping behind the camera to direct while also starring. The actor went on to share that he’s definitely interested in doing it again, and his love for directing makes it worth all the extra work. Hernandez continued:

It’s not clear at this point what the future holds for Magnum P.I. beyond the current fifth season, but fans still have a whole half left to go after the midseason finale… with whatever has or hasn’t changed after the events of the episode. Fortunately, the wait for “Charlie Foxtrot” is nearly over, and the promo teases some of the action that Hernandez hyped:

Magnum P.I. is just days away from the spring finale that will reveal the aftermath of the explosion that may have killed Det. Childs and the shooting that certainly doesn’t look good for T.C. All signs point toward trouble for Magnum and Rick next, but Higgins already went through the wringer in the penultimate episode. When she was overloaded with drugs, she had some vivid hallucinations, including one of Magnum about to propose. When star Jay Hernandez spoke with CinemaBlend ahead of the upcoming spring finale, he shared his thoughts on how Magnum would react if he found out. 

The star also directed Episode 9 of Season 5, which involved some harrowing hallucinations for Higgins when she was drugged by her would-be killer in what Hernandez described as “uncharted territory.” Most of the hallucinations involved a vision of Magnum bleeding out and/or her hands covered in blood as she tried to escape, but they started with her hallucinating Magnum pulling out a box while they were at a fancy dinner, which certainly suggested he was about to pop the question. Higgins was shocked, but not displeased… which of course changed when the hallucination took a turn for the bloody. 

By the end of the episode (which you can find streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription), Higgins had opened up somewhat to Magnum, but there was no sign that she’d dropped any details about what exactly she had seen in her drug-induced state. When I spoke with Jay Hernandez, he weighed in on how he thinks Magnum would react to finding out about Higgins' hallucination near-proposal:

As Higgins said in Episode 9, Magnum can be wise… for somebody with a stupid password! Her hallucination of a fakeout proposal has raised the question of whether a real engagement could be on the way before the end of Season 5, as just one of several questions ahead of the spring finale. Whether or not Magnum ever does reveal a box that actually holds a ring instead of a bullet remains to be seen, but the star thinks that he wouldn’t necessarily have been shocked to learn what Higgins was hallucinating. 

Higgins was still recovering from the overdose as of the end of Episode 9, which could mean trouble in the spring finale if mercenaries are going to storm Robin’s Nest in search of Magnum, which could be the case based on the footage in the promo. Then again, she appears to be back in action, and T.C. and Rick may be the ones to be worried about. Take a look at NBC’s preview for the spring finale: 

On the whole, it would have been very early for Miggy to get engaged in the ninth episode of the season, especially since they only went public with their relationship in Episode 6, and even that was only because Rick and T.C. connected the dots about the development after finding her necklace. There are much larger concerns heading into the spring finale, not least whether the worst truly did happen to Childs in the wake of Katsumoto’s big win of returning to HPD.

Magnum P.I. is going strong with its first season on NBC, after original network CBS cancelled the show following its Season 4 finale. The fifth season has taken Magnum and Co. in some unexpected directions, and the next episode will in fact explore what star Jay Hernandez calls “uncharted territory.” The leading man stepped behind the camera to direct the April 16 episode and has previewed what to expect. 

The new episode on April 16 is called “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” and won’t exactly cover a kind of case that Magnum and Higgins have investigated time and time again. In an NBC video ahead of the broadcast, Jay Hernandez previewed:

Yes, Higgins will be drugged in the new episode, which will send her inside of a psychiatric hospital. While viewers will have to tune in to see exactly what happens, it seems safe to say that something will go wrong if she’s drugged inside of a psychiatric hospital while on a case! According to Jay Hernandez, exploring this “uncharted territory” made for a nontraditional episode of Magnum P.I., and it sounds like fans could be in for a side of Higgins that actress Perdita Weeks hasn’t shown before. 

“Out of Sight, Out of Mind” won’t be the leading man’s first time behind the camera on Magnum P.I., as he directed an episode of Season 4 that also involved a character dealing with some unexpected hurdles, although not drug-induced. In that episode, Magnum spent the hour chatting with a guilt-induced version of Nuzo. Now, with his latest episode on the verge of airing, Hernandez went on to weigh in on what he’s able to do as a director that he can’t as an actor, saying:

The upcoming episode will also see Katsumoto and Dennis leave Hawaii for the mainland to look at colleges, but – in true Magnum P.I. fashion – it will take a harrowing turn, which may be bad news after he got a big win not too long ago. Higgins’ storyline sounds more… well, psychedelic! It should be interesting to see how her hallucinations compare to the dream sequence from Season 4. 

The promo teases a possible Miggy proposal (after they finally came clean about their relationship to their friends without being caught in the act by all of them) as well as a possible explosion, with no way to currently say what’s real and what’s in Higgins’ hallucinations. Take a look:

As if the stakes weren’t already high enough, with killers on the hunt for Magnum, T.C., and Rick! All things considered, Jay Hernandez's latest episode as a director looks like one that fans won’t want to miss. The “Out of Sight, Out of Mind” episode of Magnum P.I. airs on Sunday, April 16 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, ahead of the latest episode of The Blacklist’s tenth and final season. Jay Hernandez has been portraying private investigator Thomas Magnum on Magnum P.I. since 2018, but it seemed like that journey was finished for good when CBS cancelled the series after four seasons last year. Luckily, NBC saved Magnum, and now Thomas and Co. are finally back on our screens. But how long will it last? Hernandez has a funny take about it.

When NBC saved the series, it was for 20 episodes, split into two seasons, and it’s always possible that the network could pick it up for more seasons. While Jay Hernandez doesn’t know how much longer Magnum P.I. will run, he did joke to People that he can only do it for so long, and by the time it’s done, he may need help to get out of Magnum’s iconic car:

Even Thomas Magnum won't be able to do all of his stunts (or get in and out of his iconic car) in old age! The good news is that Magnum P.I. only recently had its premiere on NBC, and he's far from geriatric in Season 5. In fact, he hasn't lost a step between the CBS cancellation and the show's return in the 2023 TV schedule. Hopefully it will continue to do well!

When Magnum P.I. was still in limbo, Jay Hernandez was part of the backroom conversations. Basically, he kept updated on the show’s possibility of return, negotiations, and NBC saving the day, but he couldn’t necessarily talk about it with his co-stars, no matter how excited or hopeful he was. Hernandez is very much attached to the series – and it sounds like he will love to do it for as long as he can – but Magnum just may not be in the thick of action in another 20 yeas or so, a la Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU!

Instead of thinking about Magnum’s future ending, it might be better for viewers to think about its present. Fans of the series have finally been able to bask in the glow of Magnum and Higgins’ love, which was definitely a long-awaited relationship. Plus, it’s just good to see Magnum P.I. on TV again after thinking that it was officially done.

Hopefully, when the day comes for Magnum P.I. to end, there will be time for the writers to plan a full conclusion with closure. In the meantime, be sure to watch the series on Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on NBC so it continues to do well on the network, and there’s at least a chance for more seasons. It also streams the next day with a Peacock subscription!

Fans of the former CBS series Magnum P.I. were recently reacquainted with Jay Hernandez’s Thomas Magnum and co. when the series made its NBC debut for its fifth season. A reboot of the 1980s series starring Tom Selleck, the new show bears a lot of similarities to its predecessor. However, one of the most notable differences is that Hernandez's version of the lead character doesn't sport a suave mustache like Selleck's. With this, Hernandez explained why he doesn't rock the infamous stache.

Jay Hernandez himself has a very strong fanbase, and I'm sure plenty of fans wouldn't have minded seeing him sport a mustache on the show. However, the actor told Yahoo! Entertainment that despite Magnum’s infamous mustache being a trademark of the OG show, he didn't necessarily need it for his own series. He explained:

Tom Selleck, who now stars on the long-running Blue Bloods, took audiences by storm in the ‘80s with his cool demeanor and finely trimmed facial hair. It would honestly be hard for someone to grow a mustache that truly matches his. Plus, Jay Hernandez's current look for the character suits him and does help to further distinguish his take on the P.I. from Selleck's.

Speaking of Tom Selleck, he's had a stellar career, with Blue Bloods approaching 300 episodes. And that's saying something, as he admitted to thinking that Magnum P.I. is would be the only lucky part of his acting journey. Though the thought of Magnum reboot may have initially been unthinkable, the reboot has carved out its own path -- all while maintaining the adventurous spirit of the original.

The original Magnum has had quite an impact on pop culture, too. For instance, in 2018, a large group of men dressed like the OG Thomas Magnum (though were kicked out of a baseball game for catcalling women). That my not be the kind of homage that one expect to hear about -- and the result of that situation is cringey. However, the cosplaying is a testament to the show's cultural footprint.

I'm personally quite pleased that the 2018 revamp has succeeded. The series is fun, and Jay Hernandez is just too perfect in the role. And even though we won’t see Hernandez bring back the  mustache, Season 5 is still looking pretty good. For example, now that Magnum and Juliet Higgins are together, the writers can play with a number of interesting storylines regarding their professional and romantic relationship. But who knows, maybe Magnum might end up donning a stache sometime down the road. I know Higgins probably wouldn't mind that a bit.

Filming on Magnum P.I.’s fifth season began at the beginning of October, and that fact makes the show's eventual return feel all the more real. NBC saved the canceled CBS drama following fans’ rally to save Magnum, and star and producer Jay Hernandez is opening up about the "backroom conversations" that took place when the show was in limbo. He also mentioned how he had to keep the news from his co-stars during that period of time.

Following Magnum P.I.’s cancellation in May, reports subsequently suggested that the show could potentially be saved by another network or streaming platform, but it took a little over a month for NBC to seal the show's return. Jay Hernandez discussed the cancellation with ET, mentioning that he "was privy to those backroom conversations" regarding its future, due to his producer status. And he apparently had to work hard to keep his lips sealed:

It definitely sounds like it was a hard task for the actor. With the ongoing campaigns to save Magnum P.I., it did seem like good news was going to arrive sooner or later. Still, producers can't say anything until the papers are signed and the ink is dry -- and even then, you'll sometimes have to wait for an official release. Kudos to the Bad Moms alum for managing to (mostly) keep things on the down low while negotiations progressed.

Because Jay Hernandez was pretty hopeful during those conversations, it was hard for him to not tell the rest of the cast what had been going on behind closed doors. He mentions that while he didn’t fully tell his co-stars what was going on, he did try to find ways around the shroud of secrecy:

It must have been rewarding for him once he was finally able to tell his castmates the good news about NBC. And I'm sure his co-stars were event happier than he was when they learned what was going to happy. Around that time, Jay Hernandez posted a sweet message about the save, pointing out that many people worked hard to make it happen.

Even though Season 5 won’t be airing until 2023 and will be shorter than previous seasons, it's honestly just good to know that Magnum and his team will indeed be back on our screens in the immediate future. I'm interested in seeing how the producers choose to change things up, especially now that the show is on a brand-new network. Though it's fair to assume that Jay Hernandez and the team also want to remain true to what's made the show popular. One of the things fans loved was Magnum P.I. Friday content from Hernandez and, should that return, he will indeed be able to share plenty of BTS secrets with viewers.

It’s Fall TV season, which is usually the time of the year when Magnum P.I. fans could join all the other small-screen fandoms in anticipating the arrival of its newest season. Of course, that’s not the case this year, as CBS pulled the plug on the crime drama during the May cancellation bloodbath. Thankfully, after weeks of fans campaigning for the show to be saved — complete with a Times Square billboard — NBC stepped up and rescued Magnum P.I. with a Season 5 renewal, which is set to debut on the network in 2023. Filming for the new episodes began in earnest in late September, with an official Hawaiian blessing kicking things off, and star Jay Hernandez has now shared his first BTS pic of the season. 

While much of what fans can expect from Season 5 is still a mystery, albeit one that isn’t super-hidden considering Magnum P.I. isn’t the most complicated series, Hernandez shared a first-look shot on Twitter with co-star Tim Kang at a pretty familiar watering hole. Check it out below! 

Nothing like a smiling Jay Hernandez in a flower-emblazoned shirt to get Magnum P.I. fans pumped. Throw in Gordon Katsumoto portrayer Tim Kang mugging the camera, some beer taps, and co-star Zach Knighton appearing none the wiser in the background, and you’ve got yourself a party going. 

Speaking of parties, Knighton shared a shot on Instagram from the Hawaiian blessing that looks like it was a fun time indeed. 

Tim Kang also shared some shots from the blessing on social media, as well as some generally gorgeous shots from the production coming together in Hawaii. And he proves what Knighton and many others have already made clear: people love taking pics with Stephen Hill and his infectious smiles. 

The Magnum P.I. cast, and Stephen Hill in particular, has been extremely grateful for the fandom and its efforts, not only following the CBS cancellation, but for the four years on that network as well, which is where it all built up to such an impressive level. Not that NBC was taking a gigantic risk with picking up Magnum P.I., since its Season 4 viewership and ratings stats would be a big plus for any network, assuming the fandom does indeed follow the show to its new home.

Hopefully with filming now officially going strong, fans can anticipate hearing about some casting news for new faces who might be popping by the islands in Season 5. Or if any of the familiar stars will be making untimely exits, which doesn't seem likely at this point, since we'd have likely heard something along those lines by now. 

So without any bad news to worry about at this point, Magnum P.I. fans can look forward to more BTS pics from the cast and crew as Season 5 comes together. While waiting for it to arrive, don’t forget about all the high-profile dramas currently airing on NBC, from the Chicago shows to the Law & Order franchise. 

It’s once again that time when, a month ahead of the biggest TV premiere week of the year, the majority of broadcast network dramas and comedies are hard at work bringing new episodes together, whether it be NCIS’ squad bringing Season 20 to life or Law & Order: Organized Crime’s Christopher Meloni bringing his zaddy vibes back. Jay Hernandez’s Magnum P.I. isn’t so lucky to be in that pack, given its shocking cancellation at CBS during May’s plug-pulling bloodbath. But now that Thomas Magnum & Co. are set for a return via their new home at NBC, it sounds like production will finally kick off anew right around the time when it would usually be premiering.

Though Magnum P.I. won’t be part of CBS’ Fall 2022 schedule, or any other part of the overall fall schedule, the drama is envisioned to serve as a midseason arrival for NBC, and according to TVLine, production on new episodes is reportedly set to kick off in mid-September. Star Perdita Weeks had some fans thinking filming had already begun thanks to a social media post about getting “back to work,” but that was confirmed to not be in reference to her reprising Juliet Higgins just yet. 

Barring any left-field episodes that involve extensive post-production special effects work — Thomas Magnum fights aliens in outer space! — that should give the cast and crew more than enough time to get the premiere episode and more completed in time for a January premiere date.Which isn’t to say that Magnum P.I. is 100% destined to arrive on NBC in January, since the network has yet to go public with any official debut announcements. 

Given that the next two seasons of Magnum P.I. will only deliver ten episodes apiece, rather than the usual 20 — only Season 3 was shorter, with 16 — it’s entirely possible that network execs will want to push the start date to later in the spring, so that Season 5 would be timed to end in May alongside most other broadcast offerings. 

A January premiere would likely mean a March finale, which might be an undersell for what could end up being one of NBC’s biggest ratings winners of the season. After all, Magnum P.I.’s ratings were very solid for CBS, and reportedly weren’t tied into the cause behind its cancellation decision, which was tied more into filming costs. It might be a smarter move to set its debut a month or so after the Super Bowl, with a plan to build a massive hype train in the interim.

To that end, I imagine that NBC will want to promote the show as much as possible whenever finalized footage is available to cut together, with Sunday Night Football as the marquee place for such footage to air. (Fox has the Super Bowl in 2023, so no luck there…probably.) And it wouldn’t be a bad idea to preface the eventual trailers with ads that point to and celebrate the amazing billboard-infused #SaveMagnumPI campaign that fans come together for in the aftermath of the initial cancellation.

While it’s not yet clear if the new season, or the first four, will be available on Peacock, fans can rewatch everything we’ve seen so far with a Paramount+ subscription while waiting for the stars to share photos in September as filming gets underway. 

While things have been harsh on the TV front in terms of cancellations as the 2022 season has wrapped, Magnum P.I. became one series to get some good news. After the CBS series was axed in May, NBC recently announced a two-season pickup, delighting the cast and fans around the world. Star Jay Hernandez, who portrays the titular character, has now shared a sweet message with fans following the news.

Jay Hernandez took to Twitter on 4th of July weekend, not to celebrate America’s birthday but rather to celebrate the Magnum P.I. renewal. He responded to a video that NBC shared of him and thanked the fans for their hard work -- which included a "Save Magnum P.I. billboard" -- in order to get the show back up and running. He had the same sentiments in his tweet,  and said he was thankful and grateful to start shooting again soon:

Seeing how excited Jay Hernandez is about the pickup and the fact that it was because of the fans should make the impending wait for the renewal worth it. It was a long month and a half after CBS' cancellation news first broke, but Hernandez has also revealed he is ready to dive right into Season 5. 

Magnum P.I. was initially canceled in May, not long after the Season 4 finale, and the CBS boss cited multiple "factors" as the cause. It came as a surprise, as did many cancellations this season, meaning the show wasn't given a proper finale. Soon after, the show’s studio, Universal TV, was reportedly shopping the series to other networks in the hopes of it getting picked up again. Things seemed hopeful for a time when talks seemed open with either USA Network or NBC, but it took a long time for a deal to actually come to fruition.

Still, it's not a big surprise the show got picked up by another network, considering its very persistent fans. The fanbase was quick to rally around the drama after the cancellation, creating hashtags and petitions to get the word across that it needs to be saved. Again, there was even that billboard in Times Square that caught the eye of some of the stars.

Luckily, good news came soon after. In the late hours of June 30, just before options on the cast expired, NBC opted to save Magnum P.I. for 20 episodes, splitting it into two seasons. It was an excruciating wait, but it finally happened and there should only be good news to come on that front from here on out.

It appears that Christmas in July doesn’t necessarily have to be a mythical idea partially geared by consumerism, because there are millions of people out there who woke up on July 1 to some amazing news. I speak specifically about Magnum P.I. fans, as the crime CBS drama has survived its cancellation from CBS with an official renewal order from the good folks at NBC. And even though the deal was officially announced after the witching hour came and went, Jay Hernandez and some of Magnum P.I.’s other stars were right there on social media celebrating the news with fans. 

Specifically, NBC put in for a two-season renewal for Magnum P.I., with 20 more episodes ordered at the moment. The goal will be to split that order up into a pair of ten-episode seasons, and while that order is technically closer to a single season of episodes on CBS, beggars certainly can’t be choosers when it comes to non-guaranteed TV revivals. Even if the network had thrown its hat in for just a single wrap-up TV movie, the fandom would have still gone bananas, and rightfully so.

Magnum P.I. star Jay Hernandez, who was especially bummed when the cancellation first came down, hopped on Twitter to spread love and appreciation and all the other good vibes available, sharing this message:

Circuitous is probably putting it lightly, even though from an outsider’s perspective, it really didn’t take all that long for NBC to go public with its Magnum P.I. news. Especially not long enough for dust to have built up on any of Thomas Magnum’s spiffy shirts. Immediately after the cancellation, it wasn’t clear that any kind of future return was in the works, but the vocal and vibrant fandom’s efforts drew the attention of NBCUniversal at some point, though it wasn’t clear if the studio would decide to return the crime drama to broadcast primetime or shift it over to USA or even the Peacock streaming service. Now we know it's going back to linear television, and with the option for more seasons should these prove successful, according to Deadline.

The fans really stepped it up by renting out billboard space in Times Square in NYC, with the core #SaveMagnumPI message on display across a two-day stretch. Magnum star Stephen Hill was especially appreciative for that billboard, and recently shared a story about how that area of the city was where he worked in restaurants before making the dedicated leap into acting as a career. And it’s no surprise he was one of the stars celebrating the renewal news on Twitter with love for the fans.

Co-star Zach Knighton, who has also been vocal during the fan campaign to get the show renewed, chimed in on Twitter with the following:

Not that any of the cast and crew is likely pouting about NBC ordering up two more seasons of Magnum P.I., but co-star Tim Kang took to social media to reiterate how much the show relies on the support of the fandom, with this being a huge victory. 

Given that the Fall TV season isn't so far away, and that the networks already have their schedules being cemented, we're definitely not going to see anything from Magnum P.I. throughout the rest of 2022. But here's hoping NBC can quickly work out the filming logistics so that production can begin anew as soon as possible. I'd think fans can look forward to a summer premiere for Season 5, though it could happen earlier in the midseason if everything goes extremely smoothly.

CBS’ Magnum P.I. reboot was recently cancelled after four seasons. After Jay Hernandez, who portrayed the titular character, reflected on his time on the series, his fellow CBS stars (plus Saved By the Bell's Mario Lopez) reached out to him.

Following the surprise cancellation, Jay Hernandez gave his thanks to the show, costars, and the crew members on Instagram. The actor chose a picture that not only showed off the beautiful Hawaiian landscape, but also him leaning against the red car in a post that any Magnum P.I. fan can appreciate. Take a look: 

Many CBS stars responded to Hernandez’s post, and even some non-CBS stars. Extra host and Saved By the Bell alum Mario Lopez took the time to share a short but sweet message in the comments on the post, congratulating Hernandez on four successful seasons:

NCIS star Wilmer Valderrama also weighed in, with many years of CBS crime-solving action to his name. He responded with a touching comment about culture:

Freddy Rodriguez opted to give Jay Hernandez some advice. The actor starred on Bull for the first five seasons, leaving ahead of the show’s sixth and final season. He commented:

The Office alum Kate Flannery responded with a congratulatory message, and thanked him for having her on the show. The actress appeared in an episode at the beginning of Season 4. She wrote:

And Kenneth Johnson, who stars in CBS’ cop procedural S.W.A.T., also sent a touching message to Hernandez. S.W.A.T. shared the same night as Magnum P.I. at the beginning of the 2021-22 TV season with their primetime slots on Fridays, before the former switched to Sundays in the new year. He commented:

It’s clear that Magnum P.I. still means a lot to a lot of people, and Jay Hernandez has plenty of support in the aftermath of the cancellation. Perhaps he can come onto one of these stars' shows, even if he doesn’t play Thomas Magnum. It’s definitely a shame that the show is no more, and has already been replaced in the fall schedule. Hopefully there will be a revival in the future.

In fact, following the cancellation, Universal TV reportedly began shopping Magnum P.I. around to other networks and platforms in the hopes of reviving it. This isn't unusual when shows are cancelled abruptly without proper endings and with an active fanbase, and it does sometimes work, as proven with shows like Fox's Lucifer and NBC's Manifest, both of which were rescued by Netflix.

The month of May is always one of the dreariest when it comes to network television, since the annual network upfront presentations to advertisers necessarily indicate swaths of cancellations. 2022 was no different, as tons of shows were put to pasture, with CBS’ Magnum P.I. as arguably the most surprising entry in that bunch. And now an equally surprising bit of news has cropped up, as it appears there’s a minor chance for Magnum P.I. to return for a potential Season 5. But no promises just yet.

While it doesn’t appear as if CBS proper is leaning into any decisions to bring Magnum P.I. back to its primetime schedule anytime soon — especially considering its Fall 2022 schedule is already penciled in — there’s a chance Jay Hernandez’s ex-SEAL could return to the small screen in some capacity. According to TVLine and its sources, the show’s production studio Universal TV is attempting to shop the drama around in an attempt to find another TV network or streaming platform to make an offer for at least one new season. 

Now, that’s where the news begins and ends, so it’s not exactly the strongest lifeline for anyone to hold onto, but it’s a lifeline all the same. And considering Magnum P.I. wasn’t having any overarching problems when it came to viewership stats and demo ratings (at least nothing more troublesome than most CBS dramas), there seemingly aren’t a ton of reasons why others wouldn’t jump at the chance to be the new home for the rebooted drama.

To that end, the big reason why Magnum P.I.’s cancellation was so surprising is that it was still pulling in average weekly audiences (with delayed viewing tallied) of around 7.4 million viewers. Though its 0.7 demo rating isn’t nearly as impressive, very few scripted shows outside of CBS can boast average viewerships as high as 7.4 million people. At least when it comes to platforms with openly reported data. So from purely an audience perspective, it would be a no-brainer for another network to step up and try to cash in on that older-demo popularity. 

Even if the rights issues were a thing, it seems like Magnum P.I. could get flipped around even within the ViacomCBS family. Now that Paramount Network has completely flipped its past plan to become a Movies-centric outlet, with Yellowstone’s massive popularity convincing execs to bring more scripted shows in, perhaps that could be a suitable new home for the Hawaii-set crime drama. This could even be a draw for Paramount+ subscriptions, for that matter, since Magnum P.I. could serve as the somewhat rare non-Taylor Sheridan series for the streaming service. 

All that said, CBS obviously has some kind of reason to cancel the show, and while the network’s execs haven’t been completely forthcoming with a clear answer, it does seem to be a combination of expensive licensing fees, mixed with the high cost of producing an entire season within Hawaii. If it is indeed all about money issues, that could obviously complicate the show’s already minor chances of getting swooped up. But then I’d imagine just about every other network on TV has looser purse-strings than CBS.

In his farewell message to fans following the cancellation, Jay Hernandez DID say “Until next time,” which obviously isn’t a true sign of anything, but is at least a message of hope for fans to cling to. Here’s hoping something happens soon! 

The dust has seemingly settled when it comes to the wave of TV cancellations in 2022, though many fans are still in mourning, as are casts and crews from those shows that met unfortunate fates. The star has consistently shared behind-the-scenes photos ahead of new episodes of Magnum P.I. over the years. While it's sad that fans won't be able to look forward to more of them in the future, it's nice that he did drop one final snapshot and got Gordon Katsumoto himself, Tim Kang, in it. Still I'd love for him to continue the Friday tradition in some way. Maybe he can post throwbacks every week now?

The Friday photo tradition came to be because Magnum P.I. spent three of its four seasons airing on that night, specifically holding the 9:00 timeslot. (It was somewhat ironic given that it aired on the same night as Blue Bloods, which stars OG Thomas Magnum star Tom Selleck.) When CBS’ fall 2022 schedule was released, it was definitely weird to not see Magnum in the lineup, and it's been replaced by SEAL Team’s Max Thieriot’s new series, Fire Country.

In addition to his final Friday photo, Hernandez also shared a short but very sweet message with the fans and, in it, he reflected on his time on the show. Following the cancellation, CBS boss Kelly Kahl opened up about why the fan-favorite reboot was axed, noting that it was a “tough” decision and hinting that there were multiple factors at play.

The procedural was, of course, only one of multiple shows cancelled by CBS, though it definitely made for one of the more surprising demises. One can only hope that this won’t be the last time that viewers see Magnum and the team. Other network shows have found new life in other spaces, so maybe the same can be true here. Until such a thing happens, though, I'm going to savor this last Friday photo and others before it.

Meanwhile, Kelly Kahl also spoke to THR about the procedural, doubling down on her sentiments. While discussing the matter with the trade, the network exec said:

While Magnum P.I.'s demise still hurts, fans at least have a better idea of why things have played out this way. Over the years, many a fanbase have been left in the dark about why their favorite show was axed. With the fall schedule for CBS now out, it’s honestly strange not seeing the series on the lineup. Fingers crossed that the show makes another comeback sometime in the future, because I'd argue that there are plenty of other stories to tell.

The Jay Hernandez-led drama now formally takes it place among the many big TV cancellations that have occurred as of late. The other shows that were dropped by CBS include comedies B Positive, How We Roll, and United States of Al as well as the drama Good Sam. The network did pick up multiple series like Fire Country, East New York, True Lies, and So Help Me Todd, though.

This year was a harsh one for cancellations and included plenty of fan-favorite shows. The 2022-23 TV season will be without some heavy hitters, and it definitely won’t be the same. And with the new drama Fire Country taking over Magnum P.I.’s Friday timeslot in the fall, CBS seems to be wasting new time in finding a perfect replacement for it.

Now among the list of shows that have been axed or are ending in 2022 is CBS' Magnum P.I. reboot, which ran for four seasons. The message shows just how much the series means to him. It's honestly sad to think that the May 6 season finale has now become the de facto series finale. With this, one can only hope that the installment doesn't end on too big of a cliffhanger.

Magnum P.I. is one of four recent cancellations at CBS in the midst of the "Red Wedding," (as coined by Julie Plec). The network also dropped B Positive after two seasons along with freshman series How We Roll and Sophia Bush and Jason Isaacs' Good Sam. United States of Al was nixed after two seasons as well.

Aside from the cancellations, though, the network ordered three dramas for the 2022-23 broadcast season. One show is Fire Country from SEAL Team’s Max Thieriot, and the others are police drama East New York and legal drama So Help Me Todd. While it’s a disappointment that we won’t be seeing more adventures with Thomas Magnum moving forward, it seems like the network is finding ways to fill the void that'll be left by the procedural.

The Magnum P.I. reboot came onto the scene in 2018 and, while it seemed like it was too similar to the original series, it eventually found its footing. Not only did the show have plenty of entertaining action, it also had lovable characters that viewers came to love. It should also be noted that it took place in the same fictional universe as Hawaii Five-0 and MacGyver, which allowed for some fun crossovers.

There's still a chance that the Jay Hernandez-led drama could be revived. Obviously, shows have been saved before, so it's not impossible. Maybe it can get the SEAL Team treatment and move to Paramount+ for streaming. Let's be honest, stranger things have happened, so I'm not ready to give up hope just yet. We'll see if there is indeed a future for the Navy SEAL-turned-private investigator.

Now Suicide Squad alum Jay Hernandez has shared his thoughts about the Ayer Cut potentially being released.

Bad Moms actor Jay Hernandez made his DCEU debut in Suicide Squad’s theatrical cut. He played El Diablo, who had a tragic story and ended up being one of the most powerful members of Task Force X. He was there to shoot the myriad scenes that were ultimately scrapped, and was recently asked by TV Line about what he thought about the Ayer Cut campaign. Hernandez responded honestly, saying:

Well, there you have it. It looks like Jay Hernandez is on board to see The Ayer Cut actually be completed and released for the masses. While it’s unclear if Warner Bros. will ever actually make this happen, it’s no doubt thrilling for fans to see so much of the cast in favor of it. Now give El Diablo what he wants!

In the years since Suicide Squad was released in theaters, filmmaker David Ayer has shared glimpses of some of the footage that was ultimately left on the cutting room floor at the behest of the studio. When the Snyder Cut actually became a reality, some fans began campaigning that Ayer should be given the same treatment. But for their part, Warner Bros. doesn’t seem all that interested.

Later in his same interview, Jay Hernandez went on to share how curious he is about what Suicide Squad would have looked if David Ayer was given full creative control of the blockbuster. He cited the Snyder Cut’s original streaming release, saying:

Same, though. Zack Snyder’s Justice League was a much different movie than the one that was released in theaters back in 2017. And smart money says Suicide Squad would be similarly changed if David Ayer was given his way. We’ll just have to see if he’s ever given the chance.

The film industry is ultimately a business, and unfortunately filmmakers have been known to lose battles to studios. But since Zack Snyder got finally to share his vision for Justice League, it’s unclear if the Ayer Cut will ever become a reality.

Unfortunately, Jay Hernandez was not one of the original Suicide Squad actors included in James Gunn’s upcoming blockbuster. Perhaps this is because of his presumed death in the original movie. Although I was always holding out hope that El Diablo would rise from the ashes for another adventure in the DCEU.

Later this year, the titular Suicide Squad will be reborn with James Gunn's upcoming standalone sequel/soft reboot, The Suicide Squad. Next, he'll star in King Richard, and he's currently signed on — or rumored — to appear in a variety of other movies, including Emancipation, The Council, Bad Boys 4, Aladdin 2, and a remake of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Also, Smith filmed Quibi's reality TV series, This Joka, but its status is unknown after the company folded last year. Outside of acting, the actor/producer/rapper also keeps active on his YouTube page.

Margot Robbie (Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn)

As Dr. Harleen Quinzel, an Arkham Asylum psychiatrist seduced by The Joker and transformed into Harley Quinn, Margot Robbie gave the standout performance in Suicide Squad. Aside from this scene-stealing role, Robbie is known for her Oscar-nominated performances in I, Tonya and Bombshell. She's also known for The Wolf of Wall Street, Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood, Mary Queen of Scots, The Legend of Tarzan, Focus, About Time, Z for Zachariah, Terminal, and The Big Short.

Last year, Margot Robbie reprised her role as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, which she also produced. This year, she'll return in The Suicide Squad. Most recently, Robbie starred in and produced Dreamland. She also produced December's Promising Young Woman and will be heard in Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway. Currently, she's working on the newest film from writer-director David O. Russell, is expected to star in Barbie, and will possibly lead Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean reboot.

Joel Kinnaman (Col. Rick Flag)

Playing the part of Col. Rick Flag, the militant leader of Task Force X, Joel Kinnaman took on a no-nonsense character in Suicide Squad. Outside of this film, Kinnaman is known for his television roles in The Killing, Altered Carbon, Hanna, and House of Cards. On the big screen, meanwhile, Kinnaman is recognizable for RoboCop (2014), the Easy Money movies, Safe House, Lola Versus, Run All Night, Child 44, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), and the Johan Falk series.

Most recently, Kinnaman starred in Brothers by Blood and The Informer. He was also recently seen in The Secrets We Keep and Apple TV+'s For All Mankind. Next, Kinnaman reprises his role as Rick Flag in The Suicide Squad. The actor will also return for the second season of For All Mankind.

Viola Davis (Amanda Waller)

In the role of Amanda Waller, the government official who gives The Suicide Squad their orders, Viola Davis plays a devious supporting character in DC's blockbuster. As one of our most accomplished performers working today, complete with two Tonys, an Emmy, and an Oscar to her name, there's no denying that Davis is a supreme talent. She's well-known and acclaimed for her work in Fences, Doubt, The Help, ABC's How to Get Away with Murder, Widows, Out of Sight, Antwone Fisher, Get Rich or Die Tryin', Eat Pray Love, Won't Back Down, Prisoners, Ender's Game, Blackhat, Far From Heaven, and Get On Up.

Most recently, Viola Davis starred in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Troop Zero. Next, Davis reprises her role as Amanda Waller in The Suicide Squad. Additionally, Davis stars in Gina Prince-Bythewood's The Woman King and Nora Fingscheidt's untitled new movie. She's also signed on to play Michelle Obama in Showtime's anthology series, First Ladies.

Jai Courtney (George “Digger” Harkness/Captain Boomerang)

As George "Digger" Harkness, better known as Captain Boomerang, an outspoken thief with deadly boomerangs, Jai Courtney gave one of his liveliest performances in Suicide Squad. Courtney is also known for his starring roles in A Good Day to Die Hard and Terminator Genisys. He also played prominent supporting roles in Jack Reacher, I, Frankenstein, the Divergent series, Felony, Unbroken, Man Down, The Water Diviner, and Alita: Battle Angel. Additionally, he had a leading part in The Exception, and recurring roles in Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later.

Most recently, Jail Courtney starred in Netflix's Stateless. He was also seen in Honest Thief and Buffaloed, and heard in 100% Wolf. Next, Courtney reprises his role for The Suicide Squad. He'll also soon be seen in Jolt and heard in Scarygirl.

Jay Hernandez (Chato Santana/El Diablo)

As Chato Santana, i.e. El Diablo, known for his flame-summoning powers, Jay Hernadez gave a fiery performance in Suicide Squad. Most notably, Hernandez is known for Crazy/Beautiful, the Bad Moms movies, the Hostel films, and Friday Night Lights (2004). His other notable credits include Bright, Lakeside Terrace, Max, Toy Story 4, World Trade Center, Quarantine, Max, Takers, Grindhouse, Joy Ride, Torque, Ladder 49, and Carlito's Way: Rise to Power. He also appeared in Scandal Season 7, as well as episodes of Nashville, Six Degrees, and Last Resort. Currently, Jay Hernandez stars in CBS's Magnum P.I. reboot.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Waylon Jones/Killer Croc)

In the role of Waylon Jones, a.k.a. Killer Croc, a cannibalistic metahuman with reptilian features, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje plays a memorable supporting character in this ensemble piece. Outside of this performance, the British actor is also known for Oz, Lost, The Bourne Identity, Thor: The Dark World, Concussion, and the fifth season of Game of Thrones. His other notable credits include The Thing (2011), Annie (2014), The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Get Rich or Die Tryin', Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, The Mummy Returns, Faster, and Congo. Additionally, Akinnuoye-Agbaje can be heard in Watership Down and Bilal.

Most recently, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was seen in Wetlands, and heard in Moominvalley and Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure. Outside of acting, he made his feature screenwriting and directorial debut with 2019's Farming.

Cara Delevingne (Dr. June Moone/Enchantress)

As Dr. June Moone, an archaeologist who's possessed by an ancient force that transforms her into the host of a powerful sorceress known as Enchantress, Cara Delevigne plays a layered antagonistic force in Suicide Squad. Previously a model, Delevigne continues to expand as an actress, notably with starring roles in Paper Towns and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. She also has prominent supporting parts in Anna Karenina (2012), Her Smell, Pan, Tulip Fever, London Fields, and The Face of an Angel. Additionally, Delevigne plays a lead role in Amazon's Carnival Row.

Most recently, Cara Delevingne starred in Life in a Year. Next, the actress is expected to star in Punk. Additionally, Delevigne will be hosting BBC Three's documentary series, Planet Sex. Outside of acting, Delevigne directed Rainsford's "Crying in the Mirror" music video.

Jared Leto (The Joker)

Playing the part of The Joker, the psychopathic crime boss who terrorizes Gotham, Jared Leto gave a controversial portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime. First gaining recognition for his performance in My So-Called Life, Leto became an Oscar winner for his supporting turn in Dallas Buyers Club, though he's also well-known for his work in Requiem for a Dream, Fight Club, Panic Room, American Psycho, Lord of War, Blade Runner 2049, Girl, Interrupted, Alexander, Chapter 27, and Urban Legend. Additionally, outside of acting, Leto is the lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for 30 Seconds to Mars. He also directed 2012's Artifact, the documentary series, Into the Wild, and this year's A Day in the Life of America.

Next, Jared Leto stars in The Little Things, and he reprises his role as The Joker in Zack Snyder's Justice League. He'll also play the title character in Morbius, and is reportedly attached to Ridley Scott's Gucci, Disney's Tron 3, and an upcoming Andy Warhol biopic.

Adam Beach (Christopher Weiss/Slipknot)

In the role of Christopher Weiss, i.e. Slipknot, the man who can climb anything, Adam Beach is all-too-briefly seen in Suicide Squad. Away from this performance, Beach is known for his work in Smoke Signals, Walker Texas Ranger, Flags of Our Fathers, Windtalkers, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and Law & Order: SVU. Some of the actor's other notable credits include Hostiles, Juanita, Squanto: A Warrior's Tale, Dance Me Outside, Skinwalkers, My Indian Summer, and The CW's Nancy Drew.

Most recently, Adam Beach was seen in The New Mutants and an episode of The Good Doctor. Next, he appears in Percy, The Unhealer, Monkey Beach, and The Power of the Dog. Currently, the actor is in production on Swan Song.

Karen Fukuhara (Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana)

As Tatsu Yamashiro, also known as Katana, a widowed expert martial arts and swordswoman, Karen Fukuhara plays a badass side character in Suicide Squad. This comic book blockbuster was Fukuhara's acting debut, and she has found a few notable follow-up projects in the years since its release.

Currently, Karen Fukuhara is a series regular on Amazon Prime's The Boys. She also voices the titular character in Netflix's Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, and has a recurring voice role in Craig of the Creek. Additionally, the actress was part of the main cast for Netflix's She-Ra and the Princess of Power and she was recently heard in Bobbleheads: The Movie. At the moment, Fukuhara is shooting Bullet Train.

Ike Barinholtz (Capt. Hunter Griggs)

As Capt. Hunter Griggs, an officer at Belle Reve's Special Security Barracks, Ike Barinholtz is a notable supporting character in Suicide Squad. The actor-comedian is best known for his work on MADtv, The Mindy Project, and Eastbound & Down. His other notable credits include the Neighbors franchise, Blockers, Late Night, Snatched, Sisters, Bright, The Angry Birds Movie, and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. Additionally, Barinholtz co-wrote 2016's Central Intelligence and wrote, directed, produced, and starred in 2018's The Oath.

Most recently, Ike Barinholtz was seen in The Hunt, and will soon appear in Amy Poehler's Moxie. Additionally, Barinholtz stars in Apple TV+'s upcoming dark comedy series, The Afterparty.

Reboots and remakes have been some of the most popular and talked-about TV shows of recent years, and CBS is bringing back another series for another go with Magnum P.I. The show originally starred Tom Selleck (and his mustache) during its eight years on the air, but Selleck sadly won't reprise the role for the reboot. The good news is that an actor with the potential to reinvent the character in some exciting ways has landed the role: Jay Hernandez of Scandal and Suicide Squad will play the new Magnum.

In the Magnum P.I. reboot, Jay Hernandez will play the titular Thomas Magnum. The revamped take on the premise will present Magnum as a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who has left the Navy behind. Unable to let his SEAL training go to waste just because he's back from Afghanistan, Variety reports that Magnum decides to use his military skills and knowledge to become a private investigator. There's no confirmation at this point whether or not we can expect Magnum 2.0 to have a mustache, but my money is on no. There's no way any actor could pull off the Magnum mustache like Tom Selleck did, and Hernandez deserves the chance to make the role entirely his own with minimal comparisons to the original actor.

We've known that a Magnum P.I. reboot is in the works since back in October 2017. The minds behind CBS' Hawaii 5-0 and MacGyver (both of which are successful reboots) began developing a Magnum reboot, with The Blacklist producers on board as executive producers. The new team promised to update the show for the 21st century, which meant changing Magnum from a Vietnam veteran to an Afghanistan veteran. It was quite clear that the CBS reboot would go in a very different direction than the reboot/sequel ABC tried to cook up back in 2016.

The Magnum P.I. reboot got a pilot order from CBS back in late January; the casting of Jay Hernandez is a clear sign that the show is moving forward at a quick pace. Hernandez could be a solid choice for the leading role. He's different enough from Tom Selleck that viewers might not automatically begin comparing their performances, and he has plenty of experience on the small screen. Since 2012, Hernandez scored multiple episodes of Last Resort, Nashville, Gang Related, The Expanse, and (most recently) Scandal on ABC. He's clearly a versatile actor; it should be interesting to see how he works as the new Magnum, assuming the reboot gets a series order from CBS.

All things considered, the prospects of a series order are pretty good. CBS has had success with reboots from the team behind the reboot. Magnum P.I. has enough name recognition to guarantee that some will check it out no matter what, and it could be a lot of fun. We'll have to wait and see. The DC Extended Universe is a tricky place. While DC Studios is trying to do some serious world building in a relatively small amount of time, only Wonder Woman has been released and given critical acclaim. All the others have been a bit of a letdown following their hype, including David Ayer's Suicide Squad. Despite a fantastic trailer and strong cast, studio interference and reshoots resulted in a finished product that was decidedly "meh". But a sequel is on the way, bringing back the motley crew of villains for another adventure. Now it looks like Suicide Squad 2 might just revive a fallen member of the team: Jay Hernandez's El Diablo.

While rumors of El Diablo's resurrection began shortly after the Suicide Squad arrived in theaters, even Jay Hernandez dropped hints that he could return to the shared universe in the future. A new photo of the cast seems to strongly hint at his return to the DCEU. Suicide Squad actor Joel Kinnaman recently posted a photo training at the gym with the male cast to get back into shape-- including Jay Hernandez. Check it out.

If the cast is doing some group exercise ahead of Suicide Squad 2, perhaps that means Jay Hernandez will once again grace the silver screen as the pyrokinetic gangbanger. His sacrifice at the end of the film showed a moment of true selflessness and heroicism, and the sequel would be remiss to just write him off and not bring back "Hot Stuff" for another round.

El Diablo was one of the most interesting characters in Suicide Squad 2, following Deadshot and Harley Quinn. Real name Chato Santana, he spent his time in Belle Reve prison in solitary confinement. After accidentally killing a mass of inmates at his former prison (as well as his family), Santana is racked with self hatred and guilt over his explosive abilities. As such, he spends the majority of Suicide Squad abstaining from the action, while the other villains rushed in for an opportunity to bust some skulls.

But eventually El Diablo came through for his new family, and used his powers to battle Enchantress' brother Incubus. He seemingly perished in the conflict, as did the mute villain he was going up against. But the way El Diablo seemingly died seemed suspect. He was blown up from an explosive, but the guy was basically pure fire at that point. It would stand to reason that he'd be immune from this, or perhaps be able to recover from his injuries one day. We'll just have to wait and see.

It's currently unclear exactly what Suicide Squad 2 will be about. Viola Davis' Amanda Waller will no doubt have another mission for the team, but something tells me it won't go down quite as easily. With Deadshot's movie seemingly on hold, Will Smith's character will likely continue to be the co-lead of the film alongside Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. Additionally, Ben Affleck has been rumored to show up in the sequel, in what may be one of his final appearances as Batman before he departs the DCEU.

Suicide Squad 2 will be directed by Gavin O'Conner, and is set to arrive sometime in 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your trips to the movies this year.

Suicide Squad isn't even out in theaters yet, but reviews of the movie are already out, and a lot of them aren't good. Much like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice earlier this year, the third DC Extended Universe entry hasn't been well received by many critics. Now cast member Jay Hernandez has provided his own thoughts on the subject, and to simply summarize them, he doesn't care what the naysayers have to say.

Hernandez, who plays the fiery Squad member Diablo, told Digital Spy that despite the negative reviews that have come so far, he's happy with the movie they made and knows that the hardcore DC Comics fans will appreciate it. He said:

Jay Hernandez also noted earlier in the video how he was confused by some of the critics weren't pleased with some of the comic book elements in Suicide Squad, despite the fact that the movie is based off a team whose modern incarnations have been around since the 1980s. Had they not stayed true to the source material, the production would have angered the fans. Regardless, Hernandez isn't letting the "haters" get to him, and with Suicide Squad almost in wide release, he'll soon find out what the regular moviegoing audience thought of it.

Critiques have ranged from from overuse of music to a convoluted plot, and the overall consensus among detractors is the this wasn't the right jolt the DCEU needed following the polarizing predecessors Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Fortunately for Warner Bros, it doesn't look like the critical thrashing will have an affect on Suicide Squad's financial success, as it's already gotten off to a good start overseas and is poised to haul in the big bucks domestically. Needless to say, the negative reception so far hasn't sat well with some especially passionate DC fans. There was even a petition created to shut down Rotten Tomatoes because of perceived unfairness towards DC Comics movies from the reviewers listed on the site. With more movies like Wonder Woman and Justice League on the way, the DCEU is still set on expanding, but Suicide Squad hasn't earned the lauding many were hoping for.

Every actor has their own process for preparing for a role. In Jared Leto’s case, one of the ways he got in character as The Joker for Suicide Squad was sending creepy gifts to his villainous co-stars. At first it sounded like this was just something he decided to do earlier in the film’s production, but with Suicide Squad nearing the end of filming, Leto still isn’t done giving bizarre items to his fellow actors.

Jay Hernandez, who plays pyromaniac El Diablo in Suicide Squad, posted this photo on Instagram of gifts Leto… sorry, his friend The Joker, sent him, giving everyone "a glimpse into the mind of a mad man." From left to right, we have a deck of cards with a joker card on top of the box, a mysterious object wrapped in newspaper and an envelope with "diablo" written in childish scrawl. No doubt the envelope contains a letter of Joker’s insane ramblings (with a death threat included for good measure), but frankly, I can’t even imagine what is in the wrapped package. If it were a gift from the real Joker, it would probably be a severed appendage.

Jared Leto began this bout of giving back in June, and the gifts he sent out included bullets for Will Smith (Deadshot) and a live rat for Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn). The 30 Seconds to Mars singer also recorded a video for the entire cast that featured a dead hog, which no doubt resulted in nightmares. His goal for Suicide Squad is to make the character his own and give audiences a Clown Prince of Crime they’ve never seen before, and so far it appears he’s succeeding. Appearance-wise, his Joker is a mix of old and new, having retained the white skin, green hair and ruby lips, but also rocking unusual tattoos and bejeweled teeth. More important, however, is his dedication to the role, as his co-star Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang) apparently hadn’t seen him out of character during filming.

Joker’s exact role in Suicide Squad is still a mystery outside of reports he’ll spend the majority of the film behind bars. However, we do know for sure that we’ll see him in several scenes with Harley Quinn (including possibly explaining how he drove her insane) and a car chase sequence with Batman. There is also a rumor that Joker will first appear in March’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in a flashback scene showing the murder of Jason Todd, so audiences could get a peek at Leto’s psychopathic performance earlier than expected.

Weird gifts aside, it sounds like Leto and the other Suicide Squad cast members had fun with each other, and we’ll seem them together when the film hits theaters on August 5, 2016.

There was a big to-do when the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer dropped after San Diego Comic-Con. But that’s not the only DC property coming to movie theaters next year. David Ayer’s supervillain-packed Suicide Squad drops in August of 2016. They just released the footage they showed at Comic-Con, and it’s rad, and may or may not haunt your dreams in both a good and bad way.

Given the ensemble nature of the cast, some of these characters you’re already more than familiar with, while others are more out of left field, at least as far as casual fans go. So, we figured now is as good a time as any to run through the laundry list of distinctive comic book personalities that show up in the first Suicide Squad footage and that we’ll spend the next 13 months waiting to get to know better.

The big bad boss lady of the whole Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) took all the supervillains she could round up, "put them in a hole, and threw away the hole." A government agent, she is not someone to be trifled with, no matter what walk of life you come from.

Not originally a comic book character, Harley Quinn first popped up in the animated Batman series, but after seeing Margot Robbie’s rendition of the Joker’s protégé/sidekick, you may very well wish this was her movie without all of those other knuckleheads around taking up valuable screen time. Alluring, insane, and vicious as hell, she may very well wind up as the breakout character of Suicide Squad.

If nothing else, this role as Captain Boomerang may very well prove that we should start letting Jai Courtney speak in his natural Australian accent. He already has more personality and charisma here than anywhere else we’ve ever seen him. Traditionally an antagonist of The Flash, as you probably gathered from his name, he’s quite skilled with a boomerang.

Played by Cara Delevingne, Enchantress is torn between using her magical, mystical powers for good and evil, though we imagine, given her current circumstances and company, she has fallen prey to her darker impulses as of late, and should be cool to watch on a big screen.

Will Smith has almost exclusively played heroes on screen, so taking a villainous turn as Deadshot is something we’re keen to see. However, the character has often been portrayed as an antihero, and from this footage he appears to be grappling with the good and bad sides of his personality. However this incarnation shakes out, he’s one of the deadliest marksmen in the world, and a snappy dresser to boot.

Fresh off of playing RoboCop, Joel Kinnaman takes the role of Rick Flagg, an elite soldier and the de facto leader of the Suicide Squad under the guidance of Amanda Waller. He starts going on these suicidal missions after most of his earlier unit was wiped out and obviously has some issues to work through.

Played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje under heavy make up, both CGI and practical, Killer Croc may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he makes up for any lack of intelligence with sheer brutality, animalistic strength, and lighting fast reflexes. He also wears what looks like a Hannibal Lector mask in this trailer, which is creepy and awesome.

Not to be confused with the mask-wearing heavy metal band, Slipknot (Adam Beach) is a former chemist-turned-supervillain with a penchant for wielding durable ropes covered in a powerful adhesive of his own creation.

As you probably guessed due to her name, Katana (Karen Fukuhara) wields a magical sword, Soultaker, which steals the essence of those she kills and stores it within the blade. Usually a hero, she has worked in conjunction with Batman before, it will be interesting to see what role she plays in Suicide Squad.

Maybe the scariest looking of the Suicide Squad, Jay Hernandez’ El Diablo has some seriously creepy face tattoos going on. Several different characters have taken the name, but the current incarnation is a former criminal who adopted the moniker after encountering an earlier version who died but was resurrected by a shaman.

You know him, you love him, he’s going to give you nightmares, Jared Leto’s Joker promises to be much different, but no less striking, than other incarnations of Batman’s most notorious foe. If anything, from the short, psychotic burst we get here, coupled with the shiny grill and face tattoos, this version of the Clown Prince of Crime may be even more twisted and brutal than any we’ve seen on screen before.

And of course, Ben Affleck’s Batman shows up for a quick ride, but we’ve been seeing quite a bit of the Caped Crusader lately. Before he gets here, he’s going to have to go through the Man of Steel, which should be a neat trick.

Suicide Squad hits theaters everywhere August 5, 2016.

Director David Ayer has already put together a number of big casting pieces for his upcoming DC Comics live-action film Suicide Squad, but today the project has found yet another start to join its ranks. The latest actor to join the movie is none other than Hostel and Gang Related star Jay Hernandez.

The Wrap first got the scoop on the casting, though they don't have any firm details regarding exactly who Hernandez will be playing in the 2016 blockbuster. There are no possible character names mentioned, though the writer adds "it’s possible that he could be playing an inmate on the same cell block as The Joker, though there are several other open roles at this time."

The actor is joining a rather stellar ensemble that includes Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as the crazy/lovable Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as The Joker, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Cara Delevigne as Enchantress. Also said to be in talks for the movie are Viola Davis - who is being lined up to play squad organizer Amanda Waller - and Jesse Eisenberg - who would reprise his Lex Luthor role from Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Jay Hernandez first came up in the movie world, starring in horror movies like Hostel and Joy Ride along with dramas like Friday Night Lights and Ladder 49. In recent years, however, most of his work has been featured on television. Most recently he starred in the aforementioned series Gang Related, but he also had recurring roles on Nashville and Last Resort. He most recently completed working on a romantic comedy feature called The Night Is Young, though that film doesn't currently have a release date.

The pieces are definitely coming together for Suicide Squad, and we will likely start hearing a lot more about the production in the next few weeks. That's because the movie is scheduled to start production in April, and all of the ducks need to be set in a row before that can happen. Of course, given the secrecy surrounding all of these big live-action comic book movies, don't be so sure that we will be getting a plot synopsis any time soon. After all, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has been finished filming for months, and we still don't know a damn thing about the story in that movie.

There's not a lot to go on in terms of pinning down the character who will be played by Jay Hernandez in Suicide Squad - given that there are hundreds if not thousands of characters in the DC Universe who could share a cell block with The Joker - but if you had to put in your best guess, who do you think he is playing? Earlier today it was announced that Mira Sorvino is in talks to join the new Jerry Bruckheimer project at CBS. And while the Academy Award winning actress (for Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite) is in final negotiations to play the lead in the very Bruckheimer-ish sounding pilot Trooper, the network has already found her a potential co-star in Jay Hernandez. Sorvino would play KJ Flaxton, a mother and New York State trooper, and Hernandez in on board as her partner.

Deadline reports that the Friday Night Lights and Hostel actor is returning to television for Trooper. Hernandez' character is a former Miami Homicide Detective who relocated to New York with his daughter after the death of his wife. The last time Jay Hernandez tried his hand at television it was for the short lived Six Degrees at ABC but I'll always remember him from the Saturday morning series Hang Time.

And like his partner in crime, uh, prevention, Hernandez' character obviously also works for the New York State Police but not much has been released in terms of plot. It sounds like just another Bruckheimer police procedural (like the CSIs), only this time instead of being stuck to the city, they'll be solving crimes across the entire state! Well, I don't really know how police jurisdiction works. They'll be solving crimes in the gaps between cities? Like SuperTroopers. Anyway, the pilot was written by Aron Eli Coleite (The River) and will be directed by Craig Gillespie (Fright Night).

Ready to be drowned in teenage comedy stereotypes? I hope so because according to Coming Soon, LOL has officially gone into production. Just a month ago we got a taste of what’s to come when we first heard that Twilight’s Ashley Greene joined the cast. Major adolescent draw. Also on board? The teen queen herself, Miley Cyrus. Even with Demi Moore’s name on the roster it’s still quite tempting to dismiss this one off as a formulaic high school drama. The official synopsis doesn’t help, but the new additions to the cast might.

Catch all of those added names there? We reported on Thomas’ casting a few weeks back, but Douglas Booth, Adam Sevani, George Finn, Ashley Hinshaw, Lina Esco, Tanz Watson, Thomas Jane, Jay Hernandez, Austin Nichols, Gina Gershon, Fisher Stevens and Nora Dunn are all new to the production. The younger cast members are basically unknowns expect for Sevani who you might recognize from Step Up 2: The Streets and can catch in the upcoming installment, Step Up 3D. I don’t care if it means this movie comes with a corny prom dance routine, I wouldn’t mind seeing Sevani showing off his skills.

The adult ensemble, however, is full of famous faces and quite impressive. Jane is always a pleasure to look at as is Hernandez, and Moore has the pleasure of spending some time with both. Her character’s situation basically sounds like a screen version of her Willis-to-Kutcher swap. I lost a lot of faith in Nichols after The Informers, but the guy still rocks on One Tree Hill, so I can’t hold it against him. As for Gershon, I’m not familiar with much of her on screen work, but did happen to catch her performance in Bye Bye Birdie on Broadway. The show sucked, but she wasn’t half bad. Lastly there’s Stevens and Dunn who are probably the least familiar nowadays, but have delivered some impressive pieces in the past, my favorite of which are Super Mario Brothers (yes, I loved it as a kid and still do) and Three Kings respectively.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be writing this one off just yet. Plus it might be wise to check out the 2008 French version before passing too much judgment on this American remake.
