Justin Timberlake made headlines for all the wrong reasons back in 2024 when the news broke that he had been arrested for driving while intoxicated. The fact that it happened in the middle of a world tour made the entire situation awkward for all involved, but now that the body cam footage of the arrest is public, the issue is front and center once again, and Timberlake’s wife Jessica Biel is reportedly less than thrilled.

Timberlake was making some jokes about his arrest on stage shortly after it happened in the summer of 2024, but one person who apparently isn’t laughing right now is Jessica Biel. According to an unnamed source who spoke with People, while Biel is being supportive, that’s not the same as being happy with the situation, which she is absolutely not. The source claimed…

Jessica Biel's current feelings appear to echo how the actress reportedly felt at the time of the arrest. She was reportedly understanding, believing that mistakes are human, while also being disappointed that the arrest happened at all. Biel attended one of her husband's concerts shortly after the arrest, which seemed to confirm the charges were not causing any problems between them.

Biel's main issue, unsurprisingly, is reportedly that the release of the body cam footage simply brings attention back to this unflattering situation, which most people had certainly moved on from otherwise. It seems Biel would just like to leave the entire thing in the past, but that’s difficult following the March 20 release of body cam footage of the arrest, which includes Timberlake performing field sobriety tests and trying to explain what he does for a living awkwardly.

A request to release the footage was filed in New York, where the arrest took place, under the Freedom of Information Law. Timberlake filed for a restraining order to prevent the footage's release, claiming that its public release would constitute an invasion of privacy. Ultimately an agreement was reached to release an edited version of the footage. The edited footage apparently protects Timberlake’s privacy, but as the source says, it still doesn’t make the singer look good. The source explained…

Timberlake originally pleaded not guilty to the charges, and his lawyer claimed the singer wasn’t intoxicated at the time of the arrest. Eventually Timberlake pled guilty to a lesser charge.

While the video’s publication certainly brings an unflattering situation back into the light that both Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel would rather forget, it seems likely that it will fade into the background once again before too long.

Any great miniseries typically comes down to what happens at the end. The ending needs to stick with viewers, because a miniseries isn’t coming back for another season. I got that kick in the gullet recently when The Better Sister wrecked me. So, when I had the chance to speak with the Amazon showrunners, I knew exactly what to ask.

What Happens At The End Of The Better Sister

The Better Sister released all eight episodes as part of the 2025 TV schedule recently. The show has already hit home with the viewers who have turned in, and I think that largely is because of how the series wraps. In fact, it reveals a lot about this family, decades worth of abuse and family secrets that have remained buried only to be unearthed now.

After I spent several episodes wondering what exactly was going on with the look-alike sisters played by Elizabeth Banks and Jessica Biel, and it’s revealed that Nicky had killed Adam in self-defense when she went there to confront him about his abuse to Chloe -- after another tense moment in which we learned Adam had set her up to fail by drugging Nicky's drink when Ethan was a baby, which led to her losing full custody. Only Chloe knew the full truth. As the case came to a close, it’s the moment at the very end where the sisters come together that is still sticking to me.

On the beach, they had a long, heartfelt conversation about everything that had happened. And as they held each other and fell asleep near the fire, the camera panned up, and we saw those two little girls – the younger versions of themselves – looking right back at them, hugging the other.

But why was this the big creative choice?

Why The Creators Took That 'Little Girl' Route As The Better Sister Wrapped

I don't really think the showrunners need to justify the creative choice, because it's an absolute gut-punch. I did want to know "why" though, and co-showrunner Olivia Milch told me it was a testament to them "carrying" those little girls with them wherever they go.

The two sisters' timelines certainly painted stories of survival, from Nicky’s experience with their stepfather that changed everything to Chloe taking over guardianship of Nicky’s son (and more). To have it all combined in this one moment after years of resentment, grudges and more against the other, felt really beautiful.

Fellow showrunner Regina Corrado (known for her writing on one of the best FX drama series’ out there, Sons of Anarchy) additionally said that it’s something you can’t really “get away” from when it comes to dynamics as adults.

Truthfully, I couldn’t imagine a better way to end the miniseries. I’m all for a long-winded series that tends to last seasons upon seasons (think The Walking Dead’s eleven seasons), but when you get a condensed story like this? I’m all for it, and the ending to it capped it off.

Listen, I would honestly enjoy more stories from Nicky and Chloe and how they deal with the aftermaths of this trial – and everything else that was revealed regarding the murder – but I’m content with where The Better Sister ultimately landed. There really isn’t a better sister, per se – it’s just two girls who, even after all this time and all this heartbreak, would still risk the world for each other, and that’s beautiful.

Now excuse me, as I'm still emotionally reeling and I feel I have to go watch some of the best rom-coms to decompress from this.

When it comes to creating upcoming book-to-screen adaptations, ensuring you pick the right actors to portray the characters is always challenging. For Amazon Prime Video's The Better Sister, the two leads are Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks. While everyone has been saying they look like actual siblings for years, the two all-stars opened up about actually playing them for the first time – and the showrunner talks about how it was like "lightning struck."

When I had the chance to speak to the actors about playing sisters and the experience behind it after years of comparisons, their answers were everything. Banks said it was so easy to sink into that sister role because it was fun between the two of them:

What a series for these two to star in. The Better Sister is an excellent Amazon Prime series based on the novel of the same name, and premieres as part of the 2025 TV schedule. It tells the tale of two wildly different sisters entangled in a court case that turns their lives upside down.

It's a significant leading role for Banks, showcasing her dramatic prowess alongside Biel, and the two actresses play the part of sisters perfectly. Co-showrunner Olivia Milch jokingly said that she and her fellow showrunner, Regina Corrado, felt "brilliant" when they put their pictures together, and that they were just so lucky to pair these two:

It feels like this has been years in the making. While it's always fun to imagine seeing these two actresses in other roles – like Jessica Biel and her crazy Notebook audition or Elizabeth Banks begging to be in The White Lotus – there's something so gratifying about seeing them together now in The Better Sister. It's intense and funny at times, and perfectly suited for them.

Some actors lose roles. Others lose roles in spectacular, totally bonkers Hollywood fashion. Jessica Biel? One of the most memorable moments in New Girl has to be when the cast is invited to go to a party at Prince’s house… and they actually meet Prince. The Season 3 episode came about thanks to the iconic artist expressing interest in appearing in the show as a fan of the comedy. There’s nothing like that scene when Nick and Jess have a freakout when he appears.

Tiffany Haddish

Girls Trip actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish had a small role in the Season 3 episode “Exes” as a date of Damen Wayans Jr’s Coach. She is part of the plotline of Schmidt deciding to get his own apartment and encouraging Winston and Coach to use the place whenever they like for their hookups. In the scene, all three of them have used it at once and it freaks out Haddish’s character of Leslie.

Rob Reiner

All In The Family’s Rob Reiner returned to the sitcom fold as Jess Day’s dad, Bob, in multiple episodes of New Girl. The beloved actor (and director of classics like The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, This Is Spinal Tap and Stand By Me) was in eleven total episodes of the series, appearing in almost every season of the show.

Lisa Bonet

The Cosby Show’s Lisa Bonet guest starred in the Season 4 episode “Teachers” as an education guru named Brenda Brown. Jess and Coach meet the character while attending together. She calls Coach out for his attitude during the presentation that causes him to stop being Jess’s “buffer” while she tries to ignore her feelings for a British teacher she’s crushing on at her school.

Kaitlin Olson

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Kaitlin Olson (who is back for Season 17 of the comedy) guest starred in New Girl for two episodes in Season 4. She plays Bob Day’s much younger fiancée, who happened to be the high school rival of Jess and Cece back in the day.

Josh Gad

The Book of Mormon and Frozen’s beloved snowman voice actor Josh Gad guest starred in three separate episodes of New Girl (in Season 2, 3 and 4) as a delivery man named Bearclaw who falls head over heels with Jess. He first appears in the episode “Katie” as a blind date gone wrong before also being in “Birthday” and “Walk of Shame.”

Dermot Mulroney

My Best Friend’s Wedding actor Dermot Mulroney is “Fancyman” in New Girl. The actor appeared as a guest star in eight episodes of the show throughout its run after becoming a favorite in Season 1. In the two part episode “Fancyman,” he is introduced as the wealthy father of one of Jess’s students who she strikes up a romance with.

Olivia Rodrigo

Yes, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series actress turned massive pop star Olivia Rodrigo was on New Girl, but it was before reaching mega-stardom. In the Season 6 episode “Young Adult,” Rodrigo plays one of the students in Jess’s school who becomes a huge fan of Nick Miller’s novel The Pepperwood Chronicles. In an effort for her students (including Rodrigo’s character of Terrinea) to like her better, Jess sets up a meeting between a few of the students and Nick.

Megan Fox

In Season 5 of New Girl, Zooey Deschanel was pregnant in real life and since that was not in the cards yet for Jess Day, the decision was made to have her character leave for a while on Jury Duty while Deschanel went on maternity leave. The creators decided to bring in Megan Fox’s Reagan to take Jess’s place and she ended up being part of 15 episodes of the series. Fox is of course also known for being in the Transformers movies, Jennifer’s Body and the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

Alan Ritchson

Before Alan Ritchson starred in one of the best Amazon Prime shows, Reacher, the actor had a memorable guest spot on New Girl in the episode “Micro”. In the Season 4 episode, Ritchson used his comedic chops as a guy Jess is seeing who she struggles with getting past the fact that Ritchson’s Matt has a micro penis.

Henry Winkler

Happy Days and Barry actor Henry Winkler appeared in New Girl (alongside the incredible Julie Hagerty and Taran Killam) in the Season 5 episode “What About Fred.” In the episode, Jess is dating a guy named Fred (Killam), who she finds very boring, but falls for spending time with his charismatic parents Winkler and Hagerty’s Flip and Nancy.

Parker Posey

Parker Posey, aka the “Queen of the Indies,” especially during the best movies of the 1990s, had a great guest appearance in New Girl during the Season 2 episode “Re-Launch.” Schmidt is having a re-branding party for himself and Posey plays a dishevelled shot girl who was not as advertised.

John Cho

Star Trek’s John Cho appeared on New Girl for the Season 5 episode “Jury Duty.” Jess tries to get out of getting on a case for a chance to be acting principal. She asks her friends to help, but fails miserably in front of Cho’s character, who ends up being the man questioning her for the case after they initially have a flirty meet-cute.

Adam Brody

The OC and Nobody Wants This’s Adam Brody was one of Jess’s ex-boyfriend’s, Berkley, in the Season 3 episode, “Exes.” In the episode, Jess tries to prove to Nick that exes can still be friends by introducing him to Berkley, but she’s proved wrong when she finds out his true intentions.

Quinta Brunson

Before Quinta Brunson was the Emmy-winning creator and star of the hit ABC comedy, Abbott Elementary, she had a brief role in New Girl, in the Season 7 episode “Mario.” When Nick is trying to propose to Jess, she unexpectedly adopts a dog, throwing off his plans. Brunson plays a restaurant host that Nick speaks to on the phone as the plans shift.

Stephen Amell

Arrow star Stephen Amell, who played the Green Arrow for eight seasons on The CW, was on New Girl for a couple of episodes in Season 1. He played Cece’s jerk boyfriend Kyle in “The 23rd” and “Valentine’s Day.” Cece ends things with Kyle in the latter episode after realizing she has feelings for Schmidt.

Jessica Biel

7th Heaven and The Sinner actress Jessica Biel stopped by New Girl for the Season 4 premiere “The Last Wedding.” When the gang goes to yet another wedding, Biel plays a single woman who ends up competing with Jess to earn the affection of its best man (played by Reid Scott).

Justin Long

Justin Long had a memorable guest star arc on the first season of New Girl. He plays Paul Genzlinger, a music teacher co-worker of Jess’s whom she starts dating in time for the show’s first Thanksgiving episode. Paul is often thought of as a male version of Jess. After the couple date for about a month and breakup, Long made a re-appearance in Season 4’s “Walk Of Shame.”

Linda Cardellini

New Girl fans got to meet Jess’s sister, Abby Day, in Season 3 through Linda Cardellini’s three-episode arc. The Dead To Me actress plays Jess’s troublemaker older sibling, who is just about completely opposite to the sitcom’s leading actress. Jess is constantly embarrassed by Abby’s behavior when she comes to stay in the loft after Jess saves her from prison.

Alexandra Daddario

Baywatch and The White Lotus’ Alexandra Daddario played one of the neighbors to the New Girl gang in two episodes of the series. Daddario’s Michelle is deemed as one of the “hot” new neighbors that Schmidt, Winston, Coach scramble to impress after their first meeting left something to be desired. Daddario appears in Season 3’s “Mars Landing” and Season 4’s “Goldmine.”

Andy Samberg

For quite a few years, New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were both big comedies airing on FOX at the same time. So in Season 6, the networks decided to crossover the comedies with a special New York episode for New Girl. While the friends are in the Big Apple, Jess gets some help from Andy Samberg’s Jake Peralta and the other cast. (The cast of New Girl was also on an episode of B99 called “The Night Shift” that aired the same week in 2016).

Peter Gallagher

The OC’s Peter Gallagher was in multiple episodes of New Girl as Schmidt’s father, Gavin. The vineyard owner first appears in the Season 5 episode “D-Day” when Jess is assisting Schmidt with wedding preparations. Gallagher, who has also been in famous movies like American Beauty and While You Were Sleeping, was a great fit to play Schmidt’s absentee dad.

Randall Park

Before Randall Park became the star of Fresh Off The Boat, Always Be My Maybe and WandaVision, he was briefly in a Season 1 episode of New Girl as an employee at a phone company (with frosted tips), who makes fun of Nick for his crazy low credit score.

Natasha Lyonne

Natasha Lyonne is a famous TV actress for her roles in Orange is the New Black, Russian Doll and Poker Face. Prior to those roles, she had a small role in New Girl’s third episode ever, “Wedding.” She played Gretchen Nelson, an acquaintance of Schmidt, who he ends up sleeping with at every wedding they both attend even though he claims he cannot stand her.

Dylan O'Brien

Teen Wolf star Dylan O’Brien plays the guy Jess Day lost her virginity to on the night of her prom back when she was in high school. In the episode “Virgins” from Season 2, Jess runs into him many years after their first meeting, but what could have been a sexual fantasy turns into an embarrassing moment for the two of them.

Brenda Song

The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody actress Brenda Song was in a few episodes in Season 2 (and one in Season 3) as Daisy, a love interest for Winston. It’s a short-lived romance for Winston, but Song is a guest star in what we consider to be No. 1 of the best New Girl episodes, “Cooler.”

Joey King

Before Joey King was the star of Netflix’s The Kissing Booth movies or the numerous 2024 movies she’s been in like A Family Affair, Uglies and Despicable Me 4, she was a popular child actor who was in Ramona & Beezus with Selena Gomez or the Taylor Swift music video “Mean.” She was also in a Season 1 episode of New Girl called “Bully” as one of Jess’s students.

Carla Gugino

Carla Gugino, known for the Spy Kids movies and being in multiple Mike Flanagan horror projects was in three 2012 episodes of New Girl as Schmidt’s new boss, Emma. In the first episode Gugino stars in “Menzies,” Schmidt gets into a sexual contract with her that doesn’t go as planned.

Nick Kroll

The very funny Nick Kroll is known for starring in The League, along with creating the Kroll Show and Netflix’s Big Mouth. In Season 2’s “Chicago,” where the gang goes to Nick’s hometown for his father’s funeral, Kroll plays one of Nick Miller’s brothers, alongside Bill Burr! You can tell Kroll and Burr had tons of fun with the Chicago accent bringing some levity to a rather emotional New Girl episode.

Fred Armisen

Saturday Night Live favorite (who was behind some of SNL's funniest recurring characters) and Portlandia lead Fred Armisen had a brief role in New Girl for the season five episode “No Girl.” While Jess is at jury duty, the gang rent out her room to random people, and Armisen plays a guy named Brandon. His short time there made a huge impression because of how funny he is with the guys. Remember when he read Schmidt his romance writing or dressed up like Jess at one point?

Justin Timberlake made headlines over a week ago, as it was reported that the singer had been arrested on suspected DWI. He was subsequently charged with a single count and, as of this writing, a court date is set for July. Timberlake was in the middle of his The Forget Tomorrow World Tour at the time of his arrest and has since resumed performing. His wife, Jessica Biel, has apparently been supporting him throughout this time and was even spotted at one of his most recent shows. Following that, an insider dropped details regarding how the two are allegedly looking to move past the legal drama. 

This past week, reports surfaced that the Candy star was spotted at her husband’s show at Madison Square Garden in New York City. She also reportedly had some fun taste-testing candy backstage. According to People, her appearance at the show coincided with her work on The Better Sister, an upcoming book-to-screen adaptation that’s currently shooting in NYC. Despite how busy the actress and mother of two is, a source suggests he would’ve made the effort to attend the concert however she could: 

Said insider also said that the two stars are “always supportive of each other’s careers” and, as reported on past occasions, they also see each other through tough personal situations. Following Justin Timberlake’s arrest, sources claimed that Jessica Biel was feeling “grateful” – like her husband – that no one was hurt as a result of the situation. However, she was also purportedly “feeling disappointed” over her spouse’s actions. People’s source now tells the trade that the two are at peace with how everything has and continues to play out: 

The Trolls alum was arrested after midnight on Tuesday, June 18 in Long Island’s Sag Harbor in New York. During that time, the “Mirrors” singer reportedly left the American Hotel, where he was hanging out with friends. After allegedly being stopped once and “advised not to drive,” Timberlake was stopped a second time by the same police officer and taken into custody. He was then kept in jail overnight and arranged in the morning. Per the entertainer’s attorney, Ed Burke, the star received one driving while intoxicated count because he refused a breath test. Timberlake also reportedly received court citations for “running a stop sign and not traveling in the correct traffic lane.”

Since the incident, rumors have been swirling around Justin Timberlake’s drinking habits. One insider claimed “it’s not a secret” that the multi hyphenate “has a real drinking problem and that he’s been “hiding” it for a while. Upon his arrest, Timberlake claimed that he’d only had one drink – a martini – that evening. Having served him that night, the bartender broke their silence, corroborating his claim that he’d only had a single drink. 

The “Take Back the Night” singer seemingly acknowledged his legal issue during a show at The United Center in Chicago a few days after his arrest. He took a moment to thank fans for their support, sharing among other sentiments that at times he “can't find the words to show [his] gratitude that you guys just keep riding with [him].”

When Justin Timberlake was arrested and charged with a DWI, the news spread around the internet like wildfire. Now, as the singer handles the fallout of this situation, a source has spoken out about how he’s feeling right now. They also opened up about how his wife, Jessica Biel, is reportedly doing amid this turbulent time.

On June 18, Justin Timberlake was arrested in the Hamptons and then released without bail. He had one charge of driving while intoxicated. He got one count because he “refused a breath test,” Us Weekly reported, and he also received two court citations for running a stop sign and not driving in the correct lane. Now, a source has spoken to ET about how this has allegedly impacted Jessica Biel, Timberlake and their family, saying:

This claim tonally goes along with the report that came out about Biel supporting Timberlake during the backlash he got over Britney Spears’ memoir. During that time, the singer also uploaded a sweet post for Biel amid the book brouhaha, and it seems like they are handling this troubling situation in a similar way.

The report also gave us an update about how Timberlake is doing right now, and how he’s feeling following his arrest. They claimed that he’s “feeling remorseful, ashamed, and humiliated." They also said he feels “accountable,” and that this incident was a “major lapse of judgment.”

Continuing to speak about how this DWI is impacting the “Mirrors” singer’s family, the source said:

Jessica Biel and her hubby were recently in Las Vegas, where they took in the celebrations during the opening of the latest resort and casino on the strip, Fontainebleau Las Vegas. It was during this excursion that the singer performed “Cry Me A River.” He also posted a couple of photos of himself and his lady to Instagram. Both pictures show their backs turned towards the camera, as they walk down a hallway. Those are warm words from Justin Timberlake, who’s been married to the 7th Heaven alum since 2012. They’ve shared sweet sentiments about each other on social media on various occasions over the years, but this one is particularly notable, given the headlines that circulated as of late. What’s Going On With The Drama Involving Britney Spears?

Even before Britney Spears’ memoir hit bookshelves, it was reported that her former lover would be featured in it. Insiders claimed at the time that the prospect was “eating at” the “Mirrors” singer. In addition to the abortion, Spears shared other notable anecdotes including a supposed Janet Jackson connection she and her ex had even ahead of the infamous Super Bowl situation in 2004. Stories that are less-than-flattering for the “SexyBack” singer have also been shared recently, including his big breakup with Spears, which happened during a music video shoot and involved a text message.

Justin Timberlake was chastised again days ago for performing “Cry Me A River” for the hotel opening. Before he belted out the 2002 single, which was inspired by his breakup with Britney Spears, he said, “no disrespect.” Many took that as a reference to the memoir drama involving his former girlfriend. Spears herself apparently caught wind of the sentiment and, when she posted a video to Instagram on Friday, she seemed to address it with her since-deleted caption. People captured the text, which read as follows: 

As fans remain displeased over Justin Timberlake’s reported actions, he and Jessica Biel have been able to handle the backlash, according to sources. They’ve allegedly been “making sure to be there for each other and continuing to move forward.” The Vegas post seems to indicate that they’re doing just that and, despite the chatter, both appear happy.

The boy band recently threw millennials into a frenzy when they released their first new music in 20 years — a song called “Better Place” for the soundtrack. A special screening of Trolls Band Together was held at the famed TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood on November 15. Justin Timberlake is reprising his voice role as Branch, partner to Anna Kendrick’s Poppy, and this third installment will center around the blue troll’s past as a member of the boy band BroZone. While JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick don’t have roles in the movie, they did attend the red (or purple, rather) carpet event, looking dapper as they showed off their individual styles. 

The *NSYNC members coordinated mostly in classic black, save for JC Chasez’s gray suit and pops of color from Joey Fatone’s pants and Lance Bass’ sparkling silver shoes. After appearing together at the MTV VMAs to present the Best Pop award to Taylor Swift, the boy band has been inundated with questions about what it all meant. Did Justin Timberlake get the band back together just for “Better Place,” or was there the possibility for a new album? Might we see an *NSYNC reunion tour?

Unfortunately, the vocalists have been noncommittal about what *NSYNC’s future looks like, with the bandmates now all having families and individual career obligations to consider. Excitement over their reunion was also tempered following the release of Britney Spears’ memoir The Woman in Me, in which Justin Timberlake’s ex-girlfriend opened up about having an abortion when they were still together and revealed the story behind her and Timberlake’s big breakup.

The Trolls star has been laying low in the weeks that followed, as the book sparked criticisms of his actions and treatment of Britney Spears. Justin Timberlake even shut off his comments on Instagram, which only led angry fans to bombard his wife Jessica Biel instead. Sources say it’s been “upsetting” for the couple to have things from the past dredged up, but they looked as strong as ever together at the movie premiere as they gazed into each other’s eyes. 

Justin Timberlake has also gotten plenty of support from his bandmates, who reportedly showed him nothing but love amid the backlash. Per previous reports, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel – who’ve been keeping a low profile as of late – were said to be leaning on each other for support. The latest alleged details, which come courtesy of a source for ET, corroborated that claim. As they put it, the two have “been focusing on their relationship and family as always.” However, they apparently still aren’t having the easiest time dealing with the blowback. The source went on to say:

Many called him out after learning Britney Spears had an abortion after the two experienced a pregnancy years ago. However, if this latest report is any indication, they may just opt to keep to themselves and weather the storm. As for the criticisms from Britney Spears fans, time will tell how long those will continue to pour in.

The Woman in Me features various details about the acclaimed pop star’s professional and personal lives and, through her writing, the singer doesn’t mince words. It’s also been alleged that she was aware of the abortion Spears reportedly had after she and the “Cry Me A River” singer got pregnant in the early aughts. These purported details are why fans seemingly take issue with the actress and believe she should speak out. One said: 

When it comes to Justin Timberlake (who broke up with her while she was shooting a music video), many seem to take particular issue with his supposed infidelity. Social media users made note of that as well when addressing Timberlake’s wife, with one even sending some blunt advice to her:

At present, details from The Woman in Me continue to make the rounds. That makes it even more unclear as to when Britney Spears fans might stop chatting about Justin Timberlake and hitting up Jessica Biel on social media. If the reports are true though, the husband and wife are finding comfort in each other.

I know I always assumed that since Jessica Biel is married to Justin Timberlake she had to have been a big fan of *NSYNC. I partly thought this because she fell in love with a singer from the boyband, but also these guys were the talk of the town in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s, how could she not be a fan? However, she wasn’t back in the day, and she took to TikTok to remind everyone about that. Now, the funny throwback interview has gone viral, and the comments about it are A+.

Following *NSYNC’s reunion at the 2023 VMAs, and the announcement of their first song in 20 years -- “Better Place” which comes out on September 29 -- tons of millennials lost their minds on TikTok out of excitement. However, it turns out, that fellow millennial and wife of Justin Timberlake, Jessica Biel does not have the diehard background many of these fans do. However, she’s clearly excited about the reunion, and to celebrate, she posted this hilarious 24-year-old interview clip to TikTok, and now it has over 1.3 million views:

That quote is from 1999, when *NSYNC was at the height of its powers. It came from Rewind, and in 2019, she reacted to the clip 20 years later while on The Tonight Show. She and Jimmy Fallon, who is a good friend of Timberlake, got a good laugh out of the clip, and Biel joked:

While the clip was likely funny in the ‘90s, it’s even funnier now. Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake were linked for the first time in 2007, then they broke up in March 2011 and were apart until November 2011. Then, in December of that year, they got engaged. They’ve been together ever since. Considering their highly publicized and beloved relationship, it’s more amusing now that the actress wasn’t an *NSYNC fan during their prime. Fans made that clear in the comments, and Lance Bass even got in on the fun:

While we know the rumors about *NSYNC reuniting for Trolls Band Together are true, it’s hard not to speculate about if she’s referring to something bigger. There are a lot of fans who want to see Timberlake and the boys go on tour, so they’re probably hoping that’s what she’s referring to. Whether they want an album, a tour or just more content in general from the boyband, fans took to the comments to make it clear that they need to know what they’re waiting for:

While we don’t know what Jessica Biel is referring to in regard to this wait, we do know one big thing about *NSYNC’s very exciting reunion: they’re releasing their first single very soon! Freeform’s Cruel Summer wraps up the latest mystery on July 31 in the 2023 TV schedule with the Season 2 finale, fittingly called “Endgame.” The second season turned the hit show into an anthology series, with Sadie Stanley and Lexi Underwood taking the lead as two young women with a big secret to hide in the late ‘90s to early 2000s. Unfortunately for fans, Season 2 ends without news of a renewal for Season 3. Still, there are some clues about whether the show could have a future beyond “Endgame,” so let’s take a look! 

What The Executive Producers Say

It’s not entirely unusual for a show to end a season without news about whether or not it has a future, but that doesn’t make it any easier on fans crossing their fingers for more! It’s likely that Megan and Isabella’s stories will be over with the events of “Endgame” given how Season 2 moved on so entirely from the events of Season 1. Executive producers Michelle Purple and Jessica Biel spoke with E! News ahead of the Season 2 premiere about a potential Season 3, with Purple saying: 

Season 1 of Cruel Summer was set between 1993-1995, while Season 2 has a narrower time frame of 1999-2000. It seems that fans shouldn’t expect a third season to get too close to present time, if Freeform does renew the show. Jessica Biel chimed in with a message for fans that (hopefully) enough people listened to! The EP said: 

Although the emphasis from the executive producers was on needing people to watch the second season, it’s hard to gauge at this point just how successful the show has been in attracting viewers over the summer. That said, there are some pieces of evidence worth looking at!

How Cruel Summer Season 2 Performs In The Ratings

The ratings and viewership numbers aren’t released as regularly for Cruel Summer as for shows that air on broadcast networks, and it’s possible that a healthy amount of the fandom watches via a Hulu subscription rather than live on Freeform. In fact, the one instance of Freeform officially announcing viewership numbers for Season 2 suggests that Cruel Summer’s success comes largely from nontraditional methods of viewing.

While TV Series Finale reports that the first and second episodes of Season 2 (which aired back-to-back on June 5) didn’t even hit a 0.1 rating or more than 0.23 million viewers in Live+Same day totals, Freeform announced that the second season premiere earned an audience of 2.6 million viewers in Live+7 totals across linear and digital platforms. 

And that's not all! The premiere was the network’s top telecast since the Season 1 finale back in June 2021, and the 2.6 million total is a surge of over 1000% from Live+Same day. At that point in the season, Cruel Summer remained Freeform’s top series on Hulu and those first two were in fact the two-most watched scripted TV episodes on Hulu that week. 

That data was calculated via internal multiplatform ratings, so we unfortunately don’t have similar numbers for every episode of Season 2. Still, it seems safe to speculate that Cruel Summer is a hit for Freeform across platforms beyond just the first day’s live broadcast, which could bode well for the show’s future. 

What's Happening At Freeform

While Cruel Summer Season 2 started out strong for Freeform in Live+7 totals as a scripted show, the network hasn’t been particularly kind to other scripted shows lately. Grown-ish’s renewal for Season 6 back in January came along with the news that the sixth would be the last. The network gave the axe to Single Drunk Female and The Watchful Eye back in late June, and Everything’s Trash was cancelled in November 2022 before being removed from Hulu and Disney+ this year. 

Cruel Summer at least hasn’t been cancelled, but Freeform’s cancellations of scripted series aren’t too encouraging, at least for me. Plus, the network renewed the show in 2021 on the same date that the Season 1 finale aired, and that isn't the case in 2023. 

More optimistically, it’s also possible that Freeform axing other shows is a sign that the network is invested in Cruel Summer as its scripted flagship, and the anthology format allowing for recastings every season could simplify the process of getting a third season off the ground, in light of recent events. And that brings us to…

Why Cruel Summer Isn’t Being Heavily Promoted

Shows that are on the verge of airing dramatic season finales often get a big promotional push from networks, executive producers, and stars, but that hasn’t been the case for Season 2. This isn’t necessarily because Freeform has given up on the series, however, as the current WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike has meant that writers and stars can’t promote their projects. Although we can only speculate, the lack of interviews for the Season 2 finale is likely a byproduct of the strikes, not because the network has stopped caring about Cruel Summer.  

Unfortunately, those same strikes make the future very uncertain for just about every scripted show that wasn’t already renewed for the 2023-2024 TV season. Most of the large network shows (with exceptions for series like The Rookie: Feds) were renewed or cancelled before the beginning of the writers strike; that wasn’t the case for Cruel Summer, so fans may be stuck waiting for some time if good news is to come. 

A lot may depend on how well Season 2 continued to perform after the two-episode season premiere back in June. Freeform hasn’t officially released ratings numbers for multiplatform totals since those first two episodes, so it's unclear at this time whether the mystery and secrets within Megan and Isabella’s story were enough to keep viewers as hooked as they were in Season 1. 

For now, you can always revisit the first two seasons of Cruel Summer streaming on Hulu. Shows with as many mysteries, secrets, and even misdirects across timelines can be worth a rewatch after finales air, so perhaps fans can even get more out of the series by going back to earlier episodes… and giving the show some extra streaming views in the process.

Justin Timberlake’s tribute to his decade married features the pair through different times of their lives, doing everything from eating cake, getting ready for industry events, traveling the world and posing on the red carpet in some seriously great fits. Jessica Biel also shared a post of her own with this: 

In Biel’s own anniversary post, the actress and producer called being married to Justin Timberlake the “adventure of a lifetime.” On her Instagram story, Biel also revealed that the couple recently ventured back to Italy to renew their vows over the summer. These two are honestly the cutest and we wish them a continued lifetime of happiness. 

Ahead of the couple’s decade as husband and wife, Jessica Biel opened up about being “really proud” of her relationship with Justin Timberlake and said they have their own ups and downs just like every married couple does. They share a seven-year-old named Silas Randall and a two-year-old named Phineas, whom they welcomed during 2020 quarantine and kept secret from the public. 

Both Timberlake and Biel have lived most of their lives in the spotlight, the former once being the heartthrob of *NSYNC before leaving the band and keeping it big with his solo music. Biel started in Hollywood young, nabbing her role in 7th Heaven when she was just 14. Perhaps both of their experience in the spotlight has allowed both of them to navigate it with one another successfully among other things. 

Most recently, Jessica Biel led the cast of Hulu’s Candy as the infamous housewife who was accused of murdering the wife of her lover in 1980. Justin Timberlake had a surprise cameo in the series which aired in May of this year. You can see them both in Candy, now streaming with a Hulu subscription. Congratulations to them both for 10 years married! 

With Jessica Biel starring in Hulu’s new true crime miniseries Candy, nobody could have guessed that her husband and former boy-bander Justin Timberlake would make a special appearance. The singer makes a cameo in the final episodes of the series, and Biel revealed how it came about.

Jessica Biel stars in Candy as the titular suburban housewife accused of murdering her friend after having a love affair with her husband. Based on the actual story of Candy Montgomery, the series also stars Melanie Lynskey, Pablo Schreiber, Timothy Simons, and Raúl Esparza. Not only that, but Justin Timberlake will also appear as a police officer in the upcoming finale. 

Biel, who also executive produces the project, told EW how her hubby landed the role, and it was basically all him:

It’s pretty cute how Biel and Timberlake share material from upcoming projects with each other. It does sound like Biel was surprised when Timberlake expressed interest in playing Steve Deffibaugh, but it appears that the "Suit & Tie" singer was all-in from the start.

As for what he wanted the role to look like, Justin Timberlake had a couple of simple requests that were easy to come by. Jessica Biel explained what the former NSYNC member wanted out of the role:

Timberlake’s role as Steve Deffibaugh is one of the former investigators. It will be interesting to see how that wig and belly will come into play and how all-in he will go, especially considering he wasn’t paid for the role. Plus, he got to spend more time with his wife and even got a bromance out of it with Melanie Lynskey’s husband, Jason Ritter, who also appears as a police officer.

Candy marks Jessica Biel’s first television role since 2017’s The Sinner on USA Network, excluding 2019’s Limetown on Facebook Watch. Over the last couple of years, Biel has also served as an executive producer on the first season of Freeform’s hit series Cruel Sumer last year and did a voiceover as herself in an episode of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? on HBO Max.

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake’s relationship has always been a special one. JT opened up in 2018 about how he fell in love with the 7th Heaven alum, while Biel revealed a year prior how they make their marriage work. It’s always great when a couple works together to just further prove their relationship, so hopefully, this won’t be the last time we see them on screen together.

Is it just me, or is there a new true crime series available to stream at least once every week? Not that I am complaining, of course, as I never turn away from the opportunity to watch a good, well-acted drama that also offers a lesson in one of the most shocking criminal cases that the world of has ever seen. Thus, it should come as no surprise that I have been looking forward to watching Candy on Hulu since I first heard about it.

The five-part limited series reveals the disturbing story of Candy Montgomery - a seemingly ordinary and kindhearted suburban housewife from Texas who was convicted of murdering her best friend with an axe in 1980. When the TV show from co-creators Robin Veith and Nick Antosca was first announced, Elizabeth Moss was in talks to play the titular, based-on-real-life character. See who ended up landing the title role in the end, as well as who else makes up the main Candy cast, in the following breakdown of who plays whom and where you may have seen each of the actors before.

Jessica Biel (Candy Montgomery)

Playing the real-life unlikely killer, Candy Montgomery, is Jessica Biel, who previously played an unlikely fictional killer in Season 1 of The Sinner and once outran a power tool-wielding killer in a very loosely based on fact horror movie, 2003's remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The actress (and spouse to Justin Timberlake) quickly found popularity as a teenager in the mid-1990s with her breakout role as Mary Camden in the 7th Heaven cast, which led to roles in movies like Disney’s I’ll Be Home for Christmas, early-2000s rom-coms The Rules of Attraction and Summer Catch, and action flicks like Blade: Trinity, Stealth, and Next.

More comedies (such as Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve), thrillers (such as remakes of The A-Team and Total Recall), and also more grounded dramas (like Powder Blue and the 2012 biopic, Hitchcock) would come her way before her Emmy-nominated return to TV with the aforementioned The Sinner and the short-lived Facebook Watch original adaptation of the hit podcast drama, Limetown. Some of Biel’s other most noteworthy credits as of late have been voice acting roles - including as various characters on Amazon Prime’s Pete the Cat and as herself on several episodes of Bojack Horseman, and one edition of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? in 2021.

Melanie Lynskey (Betty Gore)

Playing Candy Montgomery’s best friend-turned-victim, Betty Gore, is Melanie Lynskey, who actually made her acting debut in the 1994 true crime classic Heavenly Creatures from director Peter Jackson, with whom she reunited for a small part in The Frighteners two years later. She later played one of Drew Barrymore’s wicked stepsisters in Ever After, a young woman sent to a conversion camp in But I’m a Cheerleader, a journalist in Shattered Glass, and more before joining the Two and a Half Men cast as Rose.

The New Zealand native (and spouse to Jason Ritter) is also known for Oscar nominated films like Up in the Air, more coming-of-age dramas like The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and horror anthologies of the big screen (2017’s XX) and small screen variety (Hulu’s Castle Rock Season 1). Lynskey more recently earned acclaimed in Netflix’s Don’t Look Up cast as the wife of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character and in Showtime’s Yellowjackets cast as Shauna.

Pablo Schreiber (Allan Gore)

As Betty Gore’s husband, Allan - whom Candy Montgomery also had a secret affair with - we have Pablo Schreiber, whose previous experience playing real people includes photojournalist Craig Stecyk in Lords of Dogtown and astronaut James Lovell in First Man. His best known role in Netflix’s Orange is the New Black cast as George “Pornstache” Mendez is not actually based on any specific real-life person, but is likely inspired by prison guards Piper Kerman, whose memoir inspired the show, probably encountered while incarcerated. 

After debuting in 2001’s Bubble Boy, he joined HBO’s The Wire cast and went on to star in political thrillers like The Manchurian Candidate (opposite his half-brother, Liev Schreiber) and Michael Bay’s 13 Hours, white knuckle action flicks like Skyscraper opposite Dwayne Johnson and Den of Thieves with Gerard Butler, and dramas like Lorelei in 2020. Some of his other notable TV credits include playing a leprechaun on American Gods, a prosecuting attorney in Apple TV+’s Defending Jacob, and leading Paramount+’s Halo cast as Master Chief.

Timothy Simons (Pat Montgomery)

As Candy Montgomery’s husband, Pat, we have Timothy Simons, whose breakout role as Jonah Ryan in HBO’s Veep cast led to an enduringly successful career that includes films like Draft Day with Kevin Costner, Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of Inherent Vice, and the Disney animated hit Ralph Break the Internet, for which he provided the voice of Butcher Boy. He also played a cop in the 2015 Goosebumps movie, a weatherman in the bleak biopic Christine, a priest in 2019’s feature-length remake of the short satire Yes, God, Yes, and a mall security guard in Hulu’s Happiest Season cast in 2020.

He was also in Hulu’s series adaptation of John Green’s novel Looking for Alaska, has leant his voice to two TV shows based on comic books (namely Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Big Hero 6: The Series), and started voicing Drew Pickles (Angelica’s dad) on Paramouont+’s Rugrats reboot more recently. Simons also appeared on HBO Max’s Station Eleven, in Disney+’s Home Sweet Home Alone, and will next be seen in the thriller, Don’t Worry Darling, from director Olivia Wilde.

Raúl Esparza (Don Crowder)

Playing Candy Montgomery’s defense attorney, Don Crowder, is Raúl Esparza, who also made his feature film debut in the fact-based legal drama Find Me Guilty in 2006 and has additionally played a lawyer named Rafael Barba on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since 2012. He also might have shared a few scenes with Jessica Biel previously on Netflix’s Bojack Horseman when voicing his recurring character - a mouse named Ralph Stilton.

He has also played a killer in Wes Craven’s final film, My Soul to Take, was in the Hannibal cast as an administrator in a hospital for the criminally insane, and played a theologist on the Hulu original series, The Path. He also had a role in the Dopesick cast as the husband of Rosario Dawson’s DEA agent character and voiced a Mexican rancher named Moreno in 2017’s animated hit, Ferdinand.

Every relationship has its ups and downs, even when the lovebirds in question are major celebrities like Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake. Ahead of their 10-year anniversary, Jessica Biel took the chance to reminisce on her Hollywood romance (spoiler alert: it’s adorable). 

In an interview with Access Hollywood, Jessica Biel reflected on her upcoming 10-year anniversary with pop icon Justin Timberlake. She said: 

As Jessica Biel said, they’ve had their fair share of challenges including a brief break-up before their engagement, plus some Britney Spears-related controversy. But in an industry where relationships can grow, crash, and burn in the time it takes to scroll down a Twitter feed, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake have managed to thrive for over a decade.

The duo first publicized their relationship all the way back in 2007. All was well until 2011, when they split sometime in February. The course of true love never did run smooth, after all. Luckily the hiatus wouldn’t last for long, as Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake got back together that summer and announced their engagement less than a year later during the 2011 holiday season. They were married in Italy in 2012. Since their marriage, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake have welcomed two children, 7-year-old Silas and 2-year-old Phineas (a quarantine baby whose birth wasn’t confirmed until after the fact). 

Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake have weathered quite a few storms together, including  the recent controversy surrounding the latter’s actions after his break-up with pop icon Britney Spears. The documentary Framing Britney Spears discussed Timberlake’s reaction to his split from Spears, reigniting fan outrage over the Y2K drama. After the documentary was released, he shared an apology on his social media accounts and even supported Britney Spears in her attempts to be freed from her conservatorship. Jessica Biel showed her support for her husband by commenting on his Instagram post. 

Since then, it’s been fairly smooth sailing for the pair as Jessica Biel gears up to release her next film project. She’ll star in the Hulu series Candy as the titular character, a woman accused of murdering her best friend in the 1980’s. So, here’s the thing. I’m not sure we fully appreciated the star-power of New Girl while the FOX series was on the air from 2011 to 2018. Sure, we’ll never forget Zooey Deschanel’s Jess going full-on quirky girl or Jake Johnson’s Nick Miller being the lovable doof he was, Max Greenfield’s Schmidt with his lotus pear conditioner or Lamorne Morris’ Winston and his misadventures with Ferguson. But, what also makes a sitcom as good as it was the New Girl guest stars who often managed to be super memorable and added a ton of laughs to the series. I’m talking about Taylor Swift, Prince, Dylan O’Brien and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Following my recent rewatch of the series and a few years removed from its series finale, I figured its time to rank the best guest appearances during New Girl’s seven season run. But first, I want to get a notable honorable mention out of the way:

New Girl's Guest Of Honor: Megan Fox

Megan Fox had a 15-episode guest arc while Zooey Deschanel’s Jess was on jury duty and the actress took maternity leave on the show. Although it didn’t seem fair to rank her with the others because she had significantly more screen time, I wanted to highlight Fox’s part in the series. Writing your star out of their series for a while is supposed to be a disaster, but it wasn’t thanks to the Transformers star. Fox’s Reagan brought a completely different flavor to the series, as a closed-off and suave temporary roommate to the New Girl cast. In the process, the actress showed off her comedic chops in a new way and provided a really interesting arc to the series. New Girl took a big swing and it paid off here. Anyway, on to the ranking!

11. Dylan O’Brien - Virgins - Season 2

Remember the time when the loft recalled how they lost their virginities? In the Season 2 episode, each of the roommates told their own stories of their first times and as it turns out Jess’ story involved The Maze Runner’s Dylan O’Brien. The actor struts into the show with style after an ill-fated prom night for Jess. He only strums a song for her on the guitar, but as the story goes, years later they meet each other at a bar and the results are absolute chaos. 

Dylan O’Brien’s guest spot is incredible because we expect him to be the rom-com heartthrob of Jess’ past, but nope… we were played in the best way.

10. Taran Killam - What About Fred - Season 5

One of the funniest aspects of New Girl continues to be its dating stories, and one Season 5 treat gave us Taran Killam’s Fred. In the episode, Jess is going out with the SNL alum’s character, who plays a hilariously boring oddball that feels like someone we’ve all met somewhere. What happens is she ends up sticking around with him because she loves hanging out with his parents more than him (played by Julie Hagerty and Henry Winkler). Killam is having fun playing around with his boring boyfriend bit and it really shows. Not to mention that amazing break dance moment with Winston.

9. Linda Cardellini - Sister - Season 3

Megan Fox wasn’t the only “anti-Jess” to shake up the FOX show throughout New Girl. In Season 3, Linda Cardellini’s character of Jess’ rebel sister was introduced into the show. You really can’t help but laugh and cringe at the wacky storyline Cardellini's character goes through as she uses her and her roommates, most memorably by dating Schmidt just so she can have a place to stay. It’s just about the worst match ever when Abby Day gets with Greenfield’s character, but it’s fun to watch play out.

8. Jessica Biel - The Last Wedding - Season 4

We really don’t get to see Jessica Biel in enough comedy roles these days, but in Season 4 of New Girl, she did a hilarious guest spot as the other woman in the way of Jess going home with the best eligible bachelor of the wedding she and the loft is attending. Throughout the episode, Jess and Biel’s character Kat end up following a man around (played by Ben Feldman) to crazed levels. Biel has solid chemistry with Zooey Deschanel in the episode and her character swept us off our feet in the matter of 20 minutes.

7. Adam Brody - Exes - Season 3

The OC and Shazam! actor Adam Brody also joined New Girl as a guest star to play another one of Jess’ former lovers in a Season 3 episode that tackles the question of whether one can be friends with exes. In the episode, Jess attempts to convince Nick that he can remain friends with his ex Caroline (played by Mary Elizabeth Ellis), but in the process she learns that she has been leading on Adam Brody’s Berkley for years. Adam Brody plays an adorable new dad who seems harmless, but then really mixes things up in a sharply funny way.

6. Fred Armisen - No Girl - Season 5

Another gem that came out of the time New Girl was without Zooey Deschanel is when SNL funny man Fred Armisen played one of their strange live-in roommates early on. Armisen played a reserved and mysterious housemate that kind of just hangs around the house with nothing to say until the very end when he does a 180 and shows up dressed as Jess Day, and even acts like her. It’s an odd anomaly since he hadn’t met Jess during his stay, but that’s kind of why it’s so hilarious and a great guest appearance.

5. Taylor Swift - Elaine’s Big Day - Season 2

A truly great celebrity guest appearance is a surprise one, and that’s what happens in the Season 2 finale of New Girl with Taylor Swift. The pop singer’s role in the series might actually have the shortest screen time on this list, but it’s undeniably memorable, and for that it finds a place in the top five! During the memorable finale that has Cece getting her arranged marriage to Shivrang amidst protest and pranks from Schmidt and Winston, along with some developments in Jess and Nick’s relationship. As the wedding episode reaches its finale, Taylor Swift pops out to pronounce her love for Shivrang. It’s a weird and funny twist for the episode and the perfect insert of someone as iconic as the singer.

4. Jamie Lee Curtis And Rob Reiner - Parents - Season 2

A genius bit of casting in New Girl was the decision to make Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner Jess’ parents in the series. The pair made a few recurring appearances to the Fox series after their introduction in Season 2, but every single time they were an absolute delight. They play a divorced couple who are convincingly Jess’ mom and dad and it’s so much fun to see the pair play off each other and the cast. They truly struck gold with these two and New Girl is better for their additions to the series.

3. Josh Gad - Katie - Season 2

New Girl also gave us Josh Gad more unhinged than ever with his role as Bearclaw in Season 2. In the episode “Katie”, the actor uses his unique brand of humor to play a man she meets at a bar on the same episode she meets David Walton’s Sam Sweeney (her famed doctor boyfriend). In the episode, she blows off Bearclaw to go out with Sam, and things get super awkward. Gad returns in two more episodes to deliver his best moment, a woodland animal musical. Bearclaw makes excellent use of the Frozen actor and has some of the most laugh-out-loud moments in the show.

2. Justin Long - Bad In Bed - Season 1

As we soon approach the end and top of the New Girl guest star ranking, we’ve come to the last of Jess’s ex boyfriends. I guess that makes my favorite guest boyfriend in the series Justin Long’s Paul Genzlinger, who is basically the male version of Jessica Day. The couple meet in the first season of New Girl at school and then briefly date. Long has a few episodes on the show, but every time his dynamic with the cast is absolutely perfect. He plays a bit of a golden retriever boyfriend and plays off the awkwardness of Jess in a really fun way. A moment of silence for that cringe-y sex scene where Jess tries to mix it up in bed with roleplaying… nope, can’t do it, still hilarious as ever.

1. Prince - Prince - Season 3

Was it ever going to be anyone else but the late Prince? The Season 3 guest spot might be the most iconic moment in the series ever, and there are so many reasons why. The singer was apparently a big fan of the sitcom, and therefore allowed the cast to grace his presence for an episode about the loft gang getting into an exclusive party hosted by Prince. The episode comes at a pivotal moment in the series where things are heating up between Jess and Nick, and Zooey Deschanel’s character is gearing up to say those three special words to him. The Prince episode is majestic, fun and showcases everything that’s wonderful about New Girl.

It's hard for celebrities to keep much from their personal lives out of the public eye but, apparently, COVID-19 has made that a bit easier. At least I'm assuming so considering there are reports that Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel have welcomed their second child in what, to this point, would've been a top-secret pregnancy.

The reports come from The Dailymail, which said that the celebrity power couple welcomed their second child at some point earlier this week. It is believed the newborn is a boy, like the couple's first son, 5-year-old Silas. Typically, a celebrity having a child wouldn't be too hard for outlets to verify but, given the couple has not posted any photos of the child, nor announced a pregnancy, the news is a bit of a shock. Provided the reports are true, how did they even pull this off?

It is believed the couple has been hanging out in Big Sky, Montana during the coronavirus pandemic. I'd assume there are considerably less paparazzi in that area, leaving tabloids and others to scour social media for any evidence that Jessica Biel may have been pregnant. As anyone who jumps over there may see, there is no evidence. Biel has not posted full-body shots from this year since March, unless it was a throwback photo or video. Her most recent self-portrait was taken from the shoulders up:

The same is true with Justin Timberlake's Instagram, which has not featured any recent shots of Jessica Biel in some time. Reports say that Biel's mother, Kimberly Conroe Biel, has been staying with the family the past week and helping out. As of Sunday afternoon, no birth announcement or pictures of the alleged baby boy have been posted.

As previously mentioned, this is the second child for the couple, who have been married since 2012. The couple have been together as far back as 2007, though separated briefly before their marriage in 2012. Publicly, the two have had a seemingly smooth marriage, though there was some controversy in late 2019 when Timberlake was spotted holding hands in public with Alisha Wainwright. Timberlake publicly apologized to Biel amidst the scandal, and the couple have seemingly moved past it.

Believe it or not, this is only the most recent major celebrity news to emerge out of Montana, as similar surprise news dropped a while back that Kelly Clarkson and her husband Brandon Blackstock were splitting up. It seems like if celebrities would like to keep their private affairs private, Montana is a great place to do so. Come to think of it, that may be just as true with anyone, though tabloids typically don't trail regular people.

The trailer for the Jessica Biel starrer Limetown shows off the cliffhanger-heavy mystery to come! In the Facebook Watch series, hundreds of people have vanished from the eponymous town. Biel stars as Lia Haddock, an American Public Radio journalist, who digs into the mystery that has rocked the Tennessee community.

Who can’t scare her? Jessica Biel’s character opens the Limetown trailer telling some force on the other side of her door that they cannot frighten her. Who is she talking too? Is it a person or a team of people?

The Limetown trailer already has me asking a bunch of questions. But, because this is a teaser for a mystery series, that should be a good sign of what is to come on the Facebook Watch series. This is my first introduction into the world of Limetown, but it may not be yours.

Like Amazon’s Homecoming and the Bravo-turned-USA hit series Dirty John, Limetown is based on a podcast, which shares its name. This, obviously, is a popular trend at the moment.

Limetown will premiere Wednesday, October 16 at 3 p.m. ET on Facebook Watch. New episodes will subsequently debut every Wednesday on Limetown’s Facebook page. There is a reason you will want to follow it.

Almost all of Limetown’s episodes are said to end with an “edge-of-your-seat cliffhanger.” A strategy that should leave viewers wanting more of the series! Cliffhangers tend to be a great way to keep you hooked. Jessica Biel, meanwhile, is no stranger to mysteries. She was at the center of one in the first season of USA’s The Sinner.

Limetown recalls that series’ grim and gritty tonality. However, the premise calls to mind HBO’s Leftovers, which also featured the abrupt disappearance of a vast array of people. Hundreds of people vanishing at once is a terrifying thought, and Limetown’s trailer shows off how it will set itself apart in tackling the scenario.

Jessica Biel’s Lia Haddock is trying to solve the mystery after it has lingered for 15 years. Lia also shares a personal connection to the tragedy; her uncle, Emile (Stanley Tucci), is among the people who went missing from the neuroscience research community. You can catch a glimpse of Tucci in what appears to be flashbacks in the trailer.

As someone who has not heard the podcast, I suspect that Limetown’s connection to neuroscience plays a vital role in the mystery.

Overall, can you think of a better series to get your thrill on as late October begins its chilly reign? There is something about mysteries and fall that work well together, so Limetown is perfectly timed in that regard.

There are people who dress up for Halloween and then there are people who go all out, celebrities included. This year, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake's adorable family decided The LEGO Batman Movie would be the inspiration behind their Halloween costumes and the results were spectacular. For Halloween this week, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake took their son, Silas Randall Timberlake, 3, trick-or-treating in New York City. The three strolled around the streets looking for candy, or as Timberlake later put it, "fighting crime in these streets."

Seeing the full video of the family out and about, you can tell those LEGO Harley Quinn and LEGO Robin costumes Silas' proud parents are sporting may have looked great, but they also weren't the easiest costumes to walk in ever with all of the extra (presumably foamy) material to keep the costumes looking LEGO-like.

Still, as far as family costumes go, for 2018 this one was pretty tops especially for being costumes the celebrities wore out on the streets. (Neil Patrick Harris' family also had pretty great Disney-themed looks, but we saw those more in a photo shoot sort of context.) As an additional bonus, The LEGO Batman Movie-based costumes also had LEGO goggles that allowed Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel to take a break from being celebrities and get to walk around unencumbered by fame for a while.

It's pretty easy to get your hands on a fairly reasonably priced LEGO Batman for kids these days. Regardless, the creativity of the family costume as a whole and the details in both Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel's costumes really take the whole look over the top. And not in the way that Kim Kardashian and her famous sisters went over-the-top this year.

Jessica Biel's show The Sinner is about as far away from 7th Heaven as you can get. The series focuses on Biel's character Cora, who is shown brutally murdering a man on the beach. Here's the thing: she has no idea why. The Sinner is a deep dive into its protagonist's psyche, and Biel got to show a range of emotions that we haven't seen from the actress in years. The shocking series finale certainly set up the ability for more storytelling, and the show was eventually renewed for a second season.

In the same interview with THR, Jessica Biel teased that she might not be starring in the full second season of The Sinner, although she'll be involved as producer regardless. She said,

It should be interesting to see where The Sinner takes the series, now that the truth about Cora's attack on Frankie Belmont has been realized. There's defintiely more layers to peel back, so hopefully Jessica Biel's protagonist ends up staying on throughout the entirety of the upcoming second season. The new trailer was noticeably void of Cora, and featured new characters played by Bill Pullman and Carrie Coon.

USA was home of the one of the most talked-about summer series of 2017 with The Sinner. Starring Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman as a woman who committed a violent murder and the detective assigned to investigate the case, the show was originally designed as a limited series. Now USA has some very good news for fans who were bummed at the idea of it ending after just the one season. The Sinner has officially been renewed for a second limited season.

The Sinner Season 2 will see Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) lured back to his rural New York hometown after a disturbing crime that appeared to be the case of an 11-year-old boy murdering his parents. Like with the case of Cora (Jessica Biel) in Season 1, there's no discernible motive for the murders at first glance. Nevertheless, Ambrose will discover some secrets that were never meant to see the light of day once he begins digging. His hometown hides a darkness that he never expected, and the young boy is far from as ordinary as he originally seemed. Ambrose will find himself in danger when he's at odds with folks who will do anything to prevent their secrets from getting out, and he'll come across an enigmatic woman who could be key to unraveling the mystery. It sounds like a rough ride for Ambrose, but pretty great for viewers!

Season 2 of The Sinner will obviously go in some different directions from Season 1, which is really to be expected after how Season 1 ended. It's difficult to imagine how the show could have stretched the Cora case out into another batch of episodes, and the description for Season 2 sounds promising. Assuming the flashback format of the first season is intact for the second season, we could see more of the first season characters who may not have reason to turn up in the second. In fact, I wouldn't be altogether shocked if Cora herself appeared in some way or other. Jessica Biel will remain on board the series as an executive producer, so she'll be around. Season 2 will premiere in Summer 2018.

Like Season 1, The Sinner Season 2 will run for eight episodes. It is described as "a second limited season," which indicates that the mystery will be wrapped up by the end of the Season 2 finale. Given the show's renewal, the "limited" nature of Season 2 doesn't necessarily mean that a Season 3 is out of the question, although it's much too early to consider whether or not it could have enough steam to run for a third batch of episodes.

It's easy to see why USA would want to bring The Sinner back for another go. It was the most-watched new cable series of 2017, and it scored two Golden Globe nominations. Despite the fact that The Sinner didn't win for Best Television Limited Series and Jessica Biel didn't win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series, the nominations were a big deal. Besides, the show lost to Big Little Lies in both categories, and Big Little Lies destroyed at the Golden Globes.

It's officially a New Year, with many folks around the world vowing to make a change through resolutions. And while this may typically have to do with diet and exercise choices, singer and actor Justin Timberlake has his own big plans for 2018. He's going to finally be releasing a new studio album, four years and change after his dual album The 20/20 Experience was released. This is sure to excite Timberlake's many friends who first fell in love with the curly haired lead singer of NSYNC, and have been hoping for a full album following his radio hit "Can't Stop The Feeling!" Timberlake announced his upcoming album Man of the Woods (set to arrive on February 2nd) with an artistic and self-narrated video about his current perspective on life. Check it out.

Justin Timberlake is back in the music game, and seems to be changing things up quite a bit since his last release. Rather than another R&B inspired album, it appears as though Man of the Woods has more of a country feel, if the above video is to be believed.

This new clip shows Justin Timberlake and his wife actress Jessica Biel together in some rural and pastoral settings. In the narration, JT reveals that this upcoming album will go where none of his music has gone before: his southern roots. Justin was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, and no doubt grew up listening to country and country-inspired music. Alas, Timberlake's career has never leant itself to the genre. He started off as a bubblegum pop artist, and then went into more R&B and Hip Hop during his solo albums. So Man of the Woods looks like it's going to show us a different side of the actor/singer.

Justin Timberlake's decision to go more country with a new album feels very similar to Lady Gaga's move with her last album, Joanne. Rather than going back to her pop roots, Gaga's latest album was far more folk and country inspired, and largely dedicated to her family. Similarly, Timberlake mentions his wife Jessica Biel and their son in his announcement video. He certainly seems to be in a much different headspace than he was when 20/20 Experience arrived in 2013. And in addition to exploring new places musically, perhaps we'll also get a glimpse into his life as it stands as a spouse and parent.

While Justin Timberlake hasn't released a full album in years, he's certainly been keeping himself busy. "Can't Stop The Feeling!" was massively successful, allowing Timberlake to stay in the music lexicon, be on the radio, and rake in the bucks. Aside from that single, he's been mostly focused on his acting career, picking up a variety of projects. In addition to his voice role in the Trolls franchise, he's set to appear in the upcoming Woody Allen movie Wonder Wheel, and was seen in films like Runner Runner, The Social Network, and Friends with Benefits.

In recent years, USA has emerged as one of the best places to find compelling original dramas on cable television. The network has had some ambitious new projects in the works for a while, one of which has been the murder mystery series called The Sinner. Now, a good murder mystery is hard to pull off on television. Fortunately, The Sinner has all the makings of a series that will leave viewers puzzling, speculating, and wanting more after every episode.

The mystery of The Sinner revolves around Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel), who at first seems remarkably unremarkable. She works with her husband Mason (Christopher Abbott) at his family company, wants a little breathing room from her in-laws, loves her toddler son, and wants to get to the beach early to stake out a good spot. Aside from a need to self-medicate before getting intimate with her husband, Cora seems perfectly normal... until everything goes wrong. The family trip to the beach and dip in a lake turns disastrous when Cora snaps and murders a man she doesn't even seem to know by stabbing him to death.

If it seems like I've just spoiled you on the entire plot of the series, don't worry. The Sinner isn't a whoddunit mystery. We know exactly who killed Frankie Belmont (Eric Todd) and how she killed Frankie Belmont and where she killed Frankie Belmont. What we don't know is why Cora suddenly seized the knife she was using to cut fruit for her son and went to town on a guy at the beach. That's where Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) comes in. Convinced that there's more to the story than that Cora simply snapped out of nowhere, he begins to dig into her past, and he works to uncover secrets about Cora's family that might help make sense of the vicious crime of which Cora is quite undeniably guilty.

Created by TV writer Derek Simonds, The Sinner is based on the novel of the same name by a, and it challenges viewers to consider how no mystery or murder can ever be truly solved until motive is determined. The question of The Sinner isn't who committed the crime. There's no frame job or evil twin or one-armed man who really did the deed. Cora Tannetti took a knife and stabbed a man on the beach seven times, while his friends screamed and her husband tried to stop her. The leading lady committed the crime and seems pretty determined to do the time. We just don't know why, and it's that why that keeps the action moving.

The story is certainly engaging and fascinatingly dark, but the actors are really responsible for making The Sinner so incredibly compelling. Jessica Biel holds nothing back in her performance as Cora, who switches between cooperative, cathartic, and violent from scene to scene. It's a deeply unglamorous role that doesn't involve tons of makeup or impeccably styled hair or high fashion. Biel's performance is so hauntingly raw that it's difficult to say when Cora is telling the truth, when she's lying, and when she's too traumatized to keep on top of things. I was never entirely sure if I wanted to hug Cora or handcuff her for safety's sake, and that really works for a series like this.

Christopher Abbott is a treat as Mason Tanetti. Every time it seems like The Sinner might go an expected route with the character, he does something entirely different, and Abbott delivers on every single scene. Mason comes across as a man who dearly loved his normal life with his normal wife and doesn't quite know how to deal with the new status quo after she murdered a man in broad daylight on a crowded beach. He's a good man in a bad situation, and it should be interesting to see if he can survive the darkness that has suddenly overshadowed his family.

Bill Pullman does well enough as the grizzled detective who thinks there's more to the case. It's a relatively thankless role, as there are as many veteran cops who take cases personally as there are cop shows on television, but he brings a certain magnetism to the small screen that works. There's a subplot about his character's sexuality that may take many viewers by surprise, and it's definitely not a twist that happens on every cop show on television.

At the end of the day, The Sinner is a show that will keep viewers engaged from week to week. The story isn't the kind of murder mystery whoddunit that has been done a thousand times before. As long as the show sticks the landing and resolves the mystery in a way that pays off on all the spine-tingling suspense, The Sinner will go down as one of the most engaging summer series on television.

The Sinner is a close-ended series, which means that viewers don't have to worry about a cliffhanger that will leave them waiting and wondering for months. This murder mystery will be resolved by the end of eight episodes. You can catch the series premiere on Wednesday, August 2 at 10 p.m. ET on USA. That said, despite Barry Watson's recent comments to The Wrap, 7th Heaven would have a somewhat harder path to a revival than other shows because the last few years have not exactly been kind to certain members of the cast. Specifically, Stephen Collins -- who portrayed Camden family patriarch Eric Camden -- made headlines when he confessed to child molestation charges three years ago, and this recent development has become a notable black eye on the legacy of the series. This does not inherently prevent a revival from taking place at some point, but it puts up some roadblocks that would make it more difficult in the long run.

Revival television has almost become its own particular genre over the course of the last few years. As the overall TV landscape has become increasingly diversified (particularly with the success of streaming platforms like Netflix), and nostalgia has become increasingly valued by audiences, networks and studios have looked for ways to dig into their catalogs and bring back beloved series. We have already seen this happen with shows like Gilmore Girls and The X-Files, and rumors have swirled for potential revivals of The L Word on Showtime, and even Psych. With all of that taking place, there's a clear path to bring back a show as iconic as 7th Heaven.

After 15 years away, Jessica Biel is returning for her first starring role on television since she exited 7th Heaven as a series regular back in 2002. People will find that her new show The Sinner doesn't share anything in common with 7th Heaven other than they both have Jessica Biel in them. The Sinner finds Biel kicking off events by committing a pretty grizzly act which you can check out for yourself in the trailer below.

As you can see from the trailer, The Sinner isn't pulling any punches. This season of the close-ended series follows a young mother, Cora, (Biel) who after being overcome with a fit of rage commits a terrible and very public act of violence on a man on the beach. Though it seems like an open and shut case, Cora -- to her horror -- has no idea why she attacked the man or felt such anger. As opposed to the "who" or "how", the series is obsessed with the "why" and that's a question that Biel's character just can't answer. A rogue investigator, Detective Harry Ambrose, (Bill Pullman) becomes obsessed with the case and her motives, and together with the mother, takes a trip into the "depths of her psyche and the violent secrets hidden in her past."

Jessica Biel stars and executive produces The Sinner, a new crime thriller airing on the USA Network. The anthology series was given a series order by the network in January and each season will focus on a different crime. The series is based on Petra Hammesfahr's book of the same name. The Sinner was written and created by Derek Simonds (When We Rise), who joins Biel, Michelle Purple, and Charlie Gogolak (This Is Us) in executive producing.

The Sinner is Jessica Biel's return to television; this is her first starring role since she left 7th Heaven at the end of Season 6 (though she did return off and on until the end of Season 10). Since then she's appeared in a number of movies such as I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, The A-Team, and The Illusionist. Biel hasn't disappeared from television entirely, though and has appeared in a guest role on the Season 4 premiere of New Girl and provided her voice to Bojack Horseman.

From the looks of the trailer, The Sinner could be an engrossing crime thriller, and you usually can't go wrong with Bill Pullman. This looks like its USA's answer to The Night Of and we'll find out how good the series is soon enough.

Hopefully that will change in the future, as the actor has signed on for a series regular role for the crime drama The Sinner, which is being developed as a pilot for USA. Everything about this project sounds solid in the early stages. Bill Pullman will take on the role of Harry Ambrose, a detective who gets embroiled in a densely layered case that, for him, begins with Cora Tanner (Jessica Biel), a housewife who commits a serious and violent crime but has no idea why she did it, and offers up no further explanation about any of the details involved. There are all kinds of ways for that kind of story to go, and Harry will undoubtedly head down many of them as he finds himself sucked in by his fascination with Cora's psychological damage. Understandably, he is also disturbed by how intrigued he is, according to TVLine.

With Mr. Robot currently getting a lot of attention at USA, both from awards circuits and from the fan community, the network understandably wants to expand on that with more programming that skews darker than their normal programming. (Not that Suits is all bowls of cherries, but you know.) And The Sinner can only be helped by adding an actor of Pullman's caliber for this kind of role. I always enjoy him in thrillers, but those thrillers aren't always enjoyable as a whole, so The Sinner has my optimistic interest.

Bill Pullman will forever be known to everyone everywhere as Independence Day's President Whitmore (although not so much for the sequel), and he also happened to live in the White House the last time he was on primetime TV for the comedy 1600 Penn. Before that, he was in Torchwood for a bit and was a lead in the 2005 miniseries Revelations, and he also had a notable appearance on Law & Order: SVU some years back. (There are also some failed pilots in there, but we're not going to talk about those now.) On the feature side, he's currently got the biopic LBJ coming.

Based on the popular novel by German author Petra Hammesfahr, The Sinner was created by up-and-comer Derek Simonds, who wrote the pilot and will executive produce alongside Jessica Biel. There's no telling at this point just how far this drama could go, but with big name talent like this already on board, I'm betting USA has high hopes for its future. Stay tuned.

But while you're staying tuned into that, don't forget about everything else coming to the small screen, which you can find in our fall TV schedule.

USA has been trying to up its game over the last couple of years, and has landed the critically acclaimed series Mr. Robot and newbie drama Queen of the South for its efforts. Now, the network looks to be infusing a little more star power into its lineup, and has signed on former Seventh Heaven star Jessica Biel to make her mark in a brand new TV project. Biel will also be executive producing the potential drama.

Jessica Biel is set to star in and executive produce The Sinner, a crime thriller that The Wrap is noting is based on the book of the same name that was written by Petra Hammesfahr. USA has already ordered a pilot for The Sinner, although that doesn't guarantee that it will definitely be going to series.

The move is a big one for Jessica Biel, as the actress rose to fame on television and then turned to the big screen after Seventh Heaven ended its run. She had some early successes with major films like Summer Catch, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Illusionist. More recently, however, she's taken a bunch of roles in indie flicks and even guest starred in TV shows, including New Girl. Now might be the perfect time for the actress to make a transition back into television in more of a fulltime capacity.

The basic plot of The Sinner follows a young mother-turned-murderess. The book delves into the lead character Cora Bender's emotions and reasoning for the crime, and presumably that's where the series would go, as well. Reports indicate that an investigator character will also be cast who will strive to uncover why Cora Bender chose such a public and unexpected crime. We've seen Jessica Biel play a desperate mom in the horror thriller Tall Man, but this crime thriller sounds like a very different sort of gig for the actress.

Derek Simonds wrote the pilot. He will also executive produce alongside Antonio Campos and Jessica Biel. Campos will have the additional duty of directing the pilot.

Of course, Jessica Biel deciding she wants to return to television doesn't mean we'll ultimately see her on the small screen next season. USA will still need to greenlight The Sinner to series before this dream comes true. On the bright side, the fact that Biel is also executive producing the drama project means that she is pretty serious about getting into the TV game. Hopefully we'll see her succeed at it sooner rather than later.

David O. Russell’s lost film Nailed will finally see the light of day over five years after production was shut down. The film was 99% complete when time was called on its shoot, and it’s been alleged that all that was needed for the film to be finished was one pivotal scene.

According to Yahoo Movies, Arrow Films have now purchased a rough-cut of Nailed that was compiled by its new producer, Kia Jam. Arrow Films have confirmed that it has now been re-titled Politics Of Love, and that it will hit cinemas in the United Kingdom at some point in 2015. Unfortunately, a United States release date has yet to be confirmed, though. Nailed/Politics Of Love revolves around Jessica Biel’s Alice Eckle, who after accidentally getting shot in the head with a nail starts having wild sexual urges. She then goes on a crusade to Washington to fight for the rights of the injured. This is where she meets Jake Gyllenhaal’s congressman, who takes advantages of her sex drive and ambition. It’s believed that all that was needed to complete the film was the shot of the nail going in the head.

It’s assumed that David O. Russell won’t have anything to do with this release. In fact, it will be interesting to see how the famously volatile director reacts to the revelation that a film he never actually finished is going to be released. Will he embrace it as his own? Or will he insist that it isn’t part of his cinematic cannon? Only time will tell.

Some of you are probably wondering what the hell happened with Nailed. In fact, you’re probably under the assumption that the fact it wasn’t released means that it must have lacked the star presence or budget to make it to the big-screen. Star presence was something that it had in abundance, though, as Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tracy Morgan, Catherine Keener and Josh Brolin all feature prominently. However, the film was rumored to be riddled with financial issues. Production was actually shut down four times in 2008 because the crew hadn’t been paid. Then, after two years of stops and starts, David O. Russell decided that enough was enough and he left the film. Most people assumed that it would remain in cinematic purgatory for good.

It actually might turn out to be a good thing that Nailed was delayed for so long, though. Let’s go back to when it was being filmed. David O. Russell is now widely regarded as one of the most interesting and enthralling filmmakers in modern movies. But it wasn’t always that way. After he burst onto the scene with the hauntingly beguiling Spanking The Monkey, which revolved around an incestuous mother-son relationship, he was labelled as the next big director. He then followed this up with the quirky romantic screwball Flirting With Disaster just two years later. But things really exploded for the director with Three Kings, the explosively entertaining Gulf War heist.

Unfortunately his fiery reputation was beginning to eclipse his talent. This came to a head with I Heart Huckabees, which was overshadowed upon release after videos of his conflicts with Lily Tomlin were shared. Nailed was supposed to be his follow-up film that set the director back on track after its convoluted predecessor. But it was once again plagued by infighting. James Caan allegedly walked off set after David O. Russell failed to be convinced by him choking on a cookie. At this point the director composed himself and set-off on a stirring running of movies that has included The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. For each of these films he was nominated for the Best Director Academy Award. Plus he also picked up Best Adapted Screenplay nominations for Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle too.

Will Nailed continue this streak? Who knows? But the fact that it wasn’t released at the time and gave David O. Russell the experience to turn himself into the director he is today is something that we can all be grateful for.

Try as we might, fellow Internet users, we can't always be true entertainment detectives, as we wait for HBO to confirm all of the rumors that we spend our days pondering. The network finally came clean yesterday about Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell officially joining True Detective’s Season 2, but they were mum on who might be filling the female lead role. That’s because they’re still trying to find someone, and it turns out they might just be talking to many more actresses than we previously thought. I think my Mom even got called in for it.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Rachel McAdams and Elizabeth Moss were ”in the running” for the part, but Deadline is reporting that as many as ten actresses have been invited to read for show creator Nic Pizzolatto. Oddly enough, Moss’ name isn’t even mentioned. The mystery here isn’t even just “who will take the lead role?” but also “are all of these women reading for the same part?” It’s entirely possible that any number of them are vying for the role of Farrell’s wife or a fellow detective not specifically tied to that case. Let's take a closer look at each of the women getting namechecked.

Kiera Knightley

Kiera Knightley, for one, is said to be “also entering the mix.” She’s been on an acclaim-mongering run in the past few years, with performances in films such as John Carney’s musically inclined drama Begin Again, Marten Tyldum’s Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game and Lynn Shelton’s romantic comedy Laggies. It would be Knightley’s first regular TV gig, should it happen, and I like to think she’d be a formidable co-star for Farrell’s character to butt heads with. If only it took place in England in the 1700s, she'd be set for sure.

Jessica Biel

First getting her big break with the family drama 7th Heaven, Jessica Biel left the show to concentrate more on her feature career, which includes fairly dark and sinister films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Blade: Trinity and The Tall Man. She was most recently seen in Francesca Gregorini’s oddball thriller The Truth about Emanuel and on the Season 4 premiere of Fox’s The New Girl. So she’s good with small screen work and dark mysteries. Could this be her next big TV break?

Rosario Dawson

Rosario Dawson is the woman who somehow fell for Dante in Clerks II. (Yeah, it was just a movie. So what?) First popping onto the scene with Larry Clark’s Kids, Dawson has done a fine job of balancing indie and mainstream. This year alone, she’s been in Robert Rodriguez’s comic adaptation Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Brian Horiuchi’s sci-fi drama Parts Per Billion, Josh C. Waller’s girlfight thriller Raze and Diego Luna’s biopic Cesar Chavez. I’m pretty sure she can handle her own on HBO, though one has to wonder if this would conflict with her current series, Netflix’s Daredevil.

Malin Akerman

Malin Akerman is one of those actresses that brightens up a screen, and it’s usually in comedies like Wanderlust, Trophy Wife or Childrens Hospital. She’s done dramas and action movies like Watchmen and last year’s The Numbers Station, and has the horror comedy The Final Girls and Ido Fluk’s drama The Ticket coming up in the future. But I still can’t see her filling a major role in a thriller as dark and murky as True Detective, especially after seeing her upcoming return to HBO for the the long-awaited second season of Lisa Kudrow's comedy The Comeback. But then I’ve been wrong about things before.

Brit Marling

Indie darling Brit Marling reminded people how interesting low-budget sci-fi can be with 2011’s double dose of Zal Batmanglij’s cult mystery Sound of My Voice and Mike Cahill’s sorta-romantic drama Another Earth. She’s keeping busy this year by reteaming with Cahill for the strange sci-fi drama I Origins and Daniel Barber’s upcoming Civil War drama The Keeping Room, which premiered this month at TIFF. Beyond a cameo on Community, she also made her way to TV for the British police drama Babylon. Maybe I’m being biased here, but my vote goes to Marling for the True Detective role.

Abigail Spencer

Abigail Spencer knows a thing or two about being on TV, getting her break with a stint on All My Children. She’s then gone on to recurring roles on Lifetime’s Angela’s Eyes, AMC’s Mad Men, TNT’s Hawthorne, USA’s Suits and Sundance Channel’s Rectify. She must not like staying on one network, that one. (She was also an absolute treat in the Bachelor web series spoof Burning Love.) You may have seen on her in theaters this past weekend in Shawn Levy’s family drama This is Where I Leave You, and she’ll soon star opposite John Travolta in Philip Martin’s crime drama The Forger.

Jaimie Alexander

Marvel fans will know Jaimie Alexander for her role of Lady Sif in both Thor movies, as well as one episode of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Arnold Schwarzenegger fans will recognize her from 2013’s bonkers action flick The Last Stand. And Kyle XY fans will know her from…well, Kyle XY. Her other TV credits include MyNetworkTV’s Watch Over Me and a few episodes of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie. She’s already set up for a possible future at HBO with the pilot for the geopolitical comedy The Brink, but it’s unclear whether or not the network will be moving forward with it. Can she handle two HBO shows?

Oona Chaplin

The Spanish Oona Chaplin was in a handful of films, including a bit role in Quantum of Solace, before finding her way to television with the BBC’s Cold War drama The Hour, following that up with roles on HBO’s Game of Thrones and the British series Dates and The Crimson Field. Currently filming George Tillman Jr.’s drama The Longest Ride with Jack Huston, Chaplin would offer a nice reprieve from the White Dude World of True Detective, and the California setting could fit her Spanish heritage.

Kelly Reilly

British actress Kelly Reilly is a TV vet in her homeland, particularly in the Above Suspicion miniseries, where she played a Detective Inspector. (There’s our link.) It’s been a busy year for her on screens of all sizes, as she’s starred opposite Brendan Gleeson in the darkly comedic Calvary, and opposite Greg Kinnear in Randal Wallace’s preachy Heaven is for Real. She was also the lead in the one-season-and-done ABC drama Black Box. According to Deadline, Reilly is the only actress who didn’t make the reading, but that doesn’t mean she’s out of the competition or anything.

Rachel McAdams

The name on this list that has been around the longest, Rachel McAdams first broke out with the one-two comedic punch of Mark Waters’ Mean Girls and the brilliant Canadian comedy series Slings and Arrows, the latter of which is her only regular TV work. With Anton Corbijn’s thriller A Most Wanted Man behind her, she’s got a huge slate of films coming out in the next year or so, including Antoine Fuqua’s boxing drama Southpaw and Cameron Crowe’s untitled romantic comedy. The problem with McAdams is, she’s got Thomas McCarthy’s thriller Spotlight in pre-production, and there is reportedly a scheduling conflict keeping her out of the top spot.

Filming is scheduled to begin this fall on True Detective, so expect all a bunch of roles to be filled in the coming months, as well as that of the other male detective.

The tiny black font that is used for the credits in the above trailer for Francesca Gregorini’s Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes suggests a TV drama, or maybe even a children’s film based on its title, instead of a dark psychological thriller about mentally mistaken identity. It works really well, as the trailer tells its own story – almost a short film, really – and reveals its subject matter with a proper pacing that I hope holds true within the film itself. Holy shit, people, this font of this trailer’s credits may have moved me.

Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes is Gregorini’s second film, following 2009’s female coming of age drama Tanner Hall, which she co-wrote and co-directed with Tatiana von Furstenberg. I suppose Emanuel is also coming of age, but it’s an age that happens to include one of the strangest cases of obsession put to film.

Kata Scodelario (the British Skins) replaced Tanner Hall’s Rooney Mara to play Emanuel, a young woman who doesn’t seem emotionally troubled, other than the fact that she begins babysitting for a neighbor (a href= http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Jessica-Biel-Close-Figuring-Out-Truth-About-Fishes-28470.html>Jessica Biel) because she thinks the woman closely resembles her dead mother. Her father (Alfred Molina and stepmother (Frances O’Connor) see that there is a problem forming, and Emanuel also develops a problematic relationship with a boy (Aneurin Barnard).

The trailer builds itself up to a fever dream of a “third act,” as the obsession is set in stone and is clearly taken to extreme measures. The moment with the titular fish seems to relate Emanuel to the child she’s babysitting, which she probably sees as herself and I don’t even want to know the nature vs. nurture conversations happening after this one.

I was 18 when my dad died, and a couple of years after that, I saw a guy in some public setting that resembled my dad enough to completely take me out of myself for a few seconds, so I can't even imagine building a compulsion around that. To me, the truth about fishes is there's mercury in them.

This was a Sundance hit, and once it plays in Sundance London next week, I’m sure it will be a hit there too. Sadly, there is no release date yet, but expect this thing to blow up – at least for a psychological thriller – on VOD later this year.

The way we see it, Gerard Butler has a coin that he flips when it’s time to choose a role. If it lands on one side, he does a bloody action thriller along the lines of 300, RocknRolla, Gamer or Law Abiding Citizens. But if the coin lands on the other side, he does a predictable romantic-comedy along the lines of The Ugly Truth, P.S. I Love You or the upcoming Playing for Keeps, which co-stars Jessica Biel and just dropped its first official trailer:

First, let’s focus on the reasons Keeps might be worth watching. Butler’s not a terrible actor. He just makes terrible choices when it comes to certain roles. But Keeps director Gabriele Muccino made the heartfelt tearjerker The Pursuit of Happyness, so it’s possible that this picture taps into a similar up-by-your-bootstraps mentality and becomes the feel-good movie of the holiday season. (It comes out in December.)

Then again, did you see that trailer? Oy. A former soccer star watching his beautiful ex-wife (Biel) move on? ESPN coincidentally looking for an expert soccer commentator … and knowing the former sportscaster (Catherine Zeta-Jones) who might be able to help Butler get the gig? Yeesh. Too early to wave the white flag?

Look, there’s definitely an audience out there for pre-packaged happiness that seems to be offered up by the likes of Playing for Keeps. And they’ll likely devour this movie with a spoon. But the competition in December includes Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit, Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables, Judd Apatow’s This is 40 and Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. Maybe if all of the above were sold out, we’d give Keeps a spin … but even that’s not a guarantee.

There are a lot of reasons not to be excited about the new Wolverine movie. From the mediocrity of the first effort to Darren Aronofsky being shown the door, there are far more question marks than pluses, but hey, maybe this new rumor will help tip the balance back to the middle a little bit.

According to Twitch Film, Jessica Biel has been offered the role of Viper in The Wolverine. That might not mean a lot to many of you, but to hardcore nerds, it should bring some excitement. Viper is a force within Hydra, and her relationship with the protagonist is complicated and even involved a marriage at some point. Her casting should offer plenty of options since she can be a love interest, a foe, a colleague or all of the above.

No deals have been signed and nothing is set in stone, but if she does board, it would make a lot of sense. Given the so-so response from fans to the first endeavor, it’s important for The Wolverine to not only be good but also a bit splashy. Biel’s casting would bring a lot of buzz and excitement from fanboys, and as a capable actress, she would definitely be able to handle the material.

We’ll let you know if this potential deal begins making forward progress. She should be affordable and available for the shoot, but these things are never fully done until the camera starts rolling.

Jessica Biel has been sporting the mother of all engagement rings (well, on and off) since she and Justin Timberlake became engaged in December. The ring is lovely and the two thirty-somethings are even lovelier together, but if Jessica Biel is telling the story, it’s Timberlake’s true eye for fashion that makes the ring and the couple’s stints on the red carpet such a smashing success.

Jessica Biel is on the cover of August’s issue of InStyle, and inside the magazine, she has spoken out about her relationship with Timberlake and all of the quirks and the challenges the couple have faced. When it came down to the wire and Timberlake decided to propose, Biel says he picked out the ring all by himself.

Later in the interview, as per People, the Total Recall star spoke out about how Timberlake has such a keen eye he will often design her daily outfits or tell the star if she has a costume miss. It must be a little annoying to have a fiancé with good style and the habit of making sure his girl knows it, but Biel doesn’t seem to mind, saying the most important part of a relationship is “"etting go of the little stuff. You can't let it get to you."

It’s hard to tell what a couple is like in the privacy of their own homes, but from what Biel is saying, it seems like she and Timberlake complement one another extremely well, making up for each other in the areas where one partner may be lacking. There’s a lot of work that must go into a marriage to make it work, but both members of the couple have a good head on their shoulders and seem to be giving the whole forever thing a really legitimate go.

Part of what makes the story of Total Recall so great is its ambiguity. While the audience is happy to go along with the ride and see Douglas Quaid become a super spy and a hero, at the back of your mind you’re always questioning if what we’re seeing is actually happening. Is Quaid actually living the life of a spy or is he just experiencing an implanted memory? It’s a fun and confusing question, and not just for the audience, but the cast as well.

Last summer I was invited as part of a small group of journalists to travel to Toronto, Canada and visit the set of the new Total Recall, directed by Len Wiseman. In between watching them film scenes (you can read all about that HERE) both Colin Farrell and Jessica Biel were kind enough to talk with us about their experience making the film. Check out the interview below in which they discuss not just the big question behind the film, but also performing their action scenes, playing around with futuristic weapons, and finding the emotion behind it all.

How challenging is it to do take after take of that scene that we were just watching?

Colin Farrell: You guys aren’t recent arrivals, right? You have been here for an hour or two I’m assuming based on that question. That was rather…we flew through that disappointingly quick I must say. It doesn’t usually go so swimmingly. It must be the hangover.

Jessica Biel: We talk about it all the time. It’s these little pockets of real passion, emotion, and connection in the midst of a big, huge, wild journey where we are running for our lives all of the time. Firing those big weapons are such bits of just deliciousness. It is a pleasure.

Farrell: There are not a lot of them. I mean, the film is…

Biel: There are only a few. It is pretty nice. I think I just always try to make everything into a love story. That is my problem. [laughs]

Farrell: I think you probably beat us to the punch there. I’m not even signed on for that very last scene you just saw. It is the only reason why I am doing the whole fucking picture. There is so much…this film is kind of extreme in its portrayal of the chaos of action and the cause and effect of violence. There are only these little pockets and windows, as Jessica was saying, where the emotional truth of each of the characters is allowed to creep in and make itself a home. Generally, in my experience, you treat Total Recall the same way you treat anything. It is the same way you treat a stage play, a piece of Greek theater, In Bruges, or whatever it may be. You approach it all the same regardless of the action. You really do. It is not just a lie. You approach it all from the standpoint of your character and just from a human being with whatever human being you are playing. You are just a human being and why are you there? What has them there? What do they want from the situation? So, with that in mind, it is the most fun part. The violence and the action does get repetitive by its very nature, whereas human emotion and thought never gets repetitive. It is very hard, as a human being I find in my 35 years, to experience the same thought in the same way twice. I’ve had the exact same thought about the exact same thing, but it is never the exact same. It is in a different container when it comes a second or third time. So, with that in mind, those scenes that we just did; each take is a little bit different and it continues to grow. I don’t think I would like to experience it but I understand some directors doing….you can get out of hand as a director and do 60, 70, 80, or 90 takes. People may say that is out of hand, but there will always be something new if the emotion and the intellect are engaged. The action does get repetitive. It is fun at the beginning, but it is fucking huge. You just saw 30% of my dialogue in the film [laughs] No, it is not that bad. I take it back.

Do you feel you are able to infuse the same amount of emotion into those action scenes? Do they give you the opportunity to do that?

Biel: That is the key.

Farrell: I try to. They can be so easy to get kind of robotic about it all. It can be very easy. You kind of have to remind yourself.

Biel: Constantly. But that is what Colin was saying about how you have to look at this particular type of material as if you were breaking down a drama with what emotion, thought, and feeling is behind everything whether it is picking up your gun, pointing it, aiming it, or jumping off a building. We are always doing all these crazy things, but you really do have to implement all of these thoughts behind it. Otherwise, it really is just vacant. Your eyes are dead and you’re like, “I jumped, fell, and I made it.” Then you watch it later and you see it. I see it and I catch myself. I’ve done it before in films. I’ve seen my work and I’ve been really embarrassed. Nobody else can really tell, but I see little bits where I didn’t connect it.

Farrell: Because everyone else is going, “She jumped and she made it.” That is kind of only me, but for you inside it…

Biel: I see it in my own work. So I really work very hard to try and fill those moments where it is hard to connect to anything that you are really doing because we are in such a vacuum sometimes. One day I came on set and you said, “I’ve been doing seven seconds of screen time and I don’t even know what I am doing anymore.” It just gets to a point where it is so…

Farrell: It is so fragmented.

Is that particularly challenging on this film, though? At least from what I know from the short story and the previous film there is a lot of us not knowing what is real and what is not real. Is that difficult for you as well? For example, is it persona A or persona B and what does the audience know at this point?

Biel: It is constantly confusing for us.

Farrell: This is a pretty good argument for none of this shit being real [laughs]. This is like The Matrix, man. I am looking for grids above your head.

So is there a system at place that you have when you are, let’s say, at a certain point in the movie where the audience knows X?

Biel: Now it is really getting creepy. What is happening now?

Farrell: Seriously. That is Laurence Fishburne.

Can you talk about the level of physicality that you both go through? You look kind of beat up here and I believe this is towards the end. Can you talk about the physical things that you are both doing on the set?

Farrell: I get a few slaps around the head and on various parts of the body throughout the film. I inflict a bit more damage than I receive. Otherwise, it would be a short film. They are doing a good job of taking care of business and making sure that I am suitably battered. There is…from the get go. I mean, the opening section of the film starts in a kind of pacifistic place. It is just going to work, the business of living, being on the treadmill, and something of a decent marriage, which isn’t dealt into too deeply. Then I’m assuming 20 minutes in, as soon as I get into the chair, the proverbial hits the fan. Then there is a lot of violence in the film. There is a lot and it goes from one chase to another. Violence is…I think people are propelled towards violence, and what propels them is much more interesting than the actual act of violence itself. With regards to your question about how to differentiate between this scene and that scene so that it doesn’t all become one blind chase and one blind need to escape or one kind of nebulous pacing; hopefully the ante picks up and up and it gets more and more desperate as it reaches the end of the film and as you get closer to some inevitable truth that needs to be experienced, which is kind of the saving of the world I suppose. The world is in a bit of a bad place and Cohaagen is not the autonomous leader that he claims to be. But the violence is fun and it really is a part of it.

Biel: What we have been doing a lot lately is that we are in our harnesses doing wire work, but we are lifted on this big elevator that moves in all of these different directions and we are dropping onto it. I roll off by accident, he grabs me, I am dangling, lifting, and climbing back on to this box that is floating in space. Are we 30 feet up or so?

Farrell: Yeah, about 30 or 40 feet up.

Biel: It is that kind of physical stuff as well. There is a lot of hand to hand combat. Kate [Beckinsale] and I have a cool fight where we do that. Colin does a lot of that. Then we fire a lot of weapons and do a lot of running.

Farrell: She has a great fight with Kate. It’s actually a really cool fight. I was a bit jealous and had a bit of envy.

Biel: It is really cool because it is not a girly fight at all. It is quite a…it’s just like two warriors fighting. We are about to get into some really interesting wire work, which is all of our anti-gravity stuff when we are trying the China Fall, which is this amazing transporting system. So it will be lots of floating physical stuff, which I have never done before. I don’t know if you have ever done it before.

Farrell: Me neither. Not even in my dreams.

Are you nervous?

Biel: I’m not nervous. It is always really fun. I really enjoy that kind of stuff. I think maybe I’m concerned about…

Not falling on your head?

Biel: I honestly don’t feel worried about that. Once you are on the rig and the guys have you in your harness…I’m sure things can go wrong, but I don’t really feel it. After we do it one time; the first time the adrenaline is pumping and it feels kind of nerve wracking.

Farrell: Yes, until your cherry has been popped, it is a little bit nerve wracking.

Biel: But I think the idea of moving in slow motion is...I’m trying to figure out how that goes exactly and if I can do it now.

Farrell: We were doing it yesterday and it was fun. It really was. Yesterday was the first day. Did they show you around all of the sets? The scene we were just shooting now – that is a people carrier. It is a very futuristic notion of this China Fall concept. Did they explain it to you and how you fall through the earth? So when it traverses the earth’s core, there is a shift in polarity and traversing in anti-gravity for a while. So it was the first time that we did it. It was 50 people, myself, Bokeem Woodbine, and a bunch of day players trying to figure it out. It took a while. Some people had their legs floating lovely, half of them had them like a child, and one guy was cycling. The director was like, “Cut! No cycling!” [laughs] But it was a lot of fun. About two hours in there we were just saying, “Get ready!” and everyone was just doing it. It was so much fun. That kind of stuff after doing reams and reams of action, because we had just come off lots of action, was really fun. It was so pathetic and it was like, “I get to engage the brain and body a bit.” It was a challenge and it was something to do. Then, of course, after a while of doing that you’re like, “Okay. Can we do something else?” This film is all of these little chapters. Some of these set pieces take eight or nine days to do. They are fucking huge!

You guys did a 15 day hover craft chase sequences from what I understand.

Farrell: That is including second-unit.

Biel: Second-unit is still doing that.

Farrell: Really? Wow.

Can you talk about how you think that scene is going to look like?

Farrell: It should look really cool.

Biel: It’s going to be so cool. The hover cars were literally built on top of race cars.

Farrell: They really did customize it. It is like something from Mad Max. It is this fabricated thing with massive engines, cages, and then they mounted on top the hover craft.

Biel: So we are actually moving and not just sitting there with four grips shaking the thing, which is kind of what I expected. [laughs] I’m not used to these big budget films anymore.

Farrell: Me neither.

Biel: So these things are literally massive adult series bumper cars. Kate is in one and we are in another one and these guys are slamming us. Our heads are rocking and it is so cool.

Farrell: It is so cool! Honest to god, just reacting to it…

Biel: It is going to look amazing. It was a real kind of experience. It was scary.

Farrell: It was an instantaneous response. It was a very immediate and very physical. It was kind of shocking a couple of times. Plus, these things were built and they took a while to build to great expense up until time and time again. But the hover part at the top is a little bit plasticy, even though you will never see it in the film. So in the middle of a take a fucking screw would go. [laughs]

Biel: There is one point where we first got in and they said, “So the door doesn’t shut so you can roll out. So you have to strap yourself extra in.” I had to wrench my own door close at one point. [laughs]

Farrell: But it does so much of the work for us. I mean, with all of the green screen that is prevalent in the studios. If you have a look around, I am not feeling like I am stuck on this kind of unhuman island where I have to communicate with an idea, which is good because I have actors around me and stuff. But the actual space we are shooting in; the practical sets are really fucking magnificent. Then, this greater notion of how the world is topographically different will be put in green screen. But while we are shooting, even if it’s a lift, we are shooting in it and behind the lift outside you will see this big chasm. I saw the artwork that is going to be designed and put in post, but the lift is beautiful. The designer has designed it so magnificently and Len has helped draw a lot of the concepts as well. That stuff is so…you always bring your own imagination, of course, but the environment is helping me certainly do a lot of the work. The sets are amazing. So there is a lot of green screen, but I am not having to talk to Jar Jar Binks. I don’t feel that I’m having to…

So Jar Jar Binks is not in this movie?

Farrell: Well, there might be just a cameo, but I don’t want to ruin it for all of those many Jar Jar Binks fans that are out in the world.

There are all of these action movies like Inception and the Matrix movies. The primary drama is the intangibility of memory, reality, and what is real and what is not. But they are action movies. Do you think it is inherently cathartic to deal with an existential crisis by hitting and shooting something? Is this something that you can bring to your performance?

Farrell: [laughs] I think so. Someone once told me that in Japan there is a place or places where you can go and buy like a hundred plates and fucking throw them against the wall.

Biel: Really? That is a great idea.

Farrell: It is a great idea, whether it exists or not. I think that touches into what you are saying. I much prefer for people to go to shooting ranges and shoot at two-dimensional paper targets than to have to go out in the street or to foreign territories and do the same. I think, as human beings, we at times overvalue the intellect and we undermine the body. I don’t mean a body externally and the shape of a body. I mean the intelligence of a body, the memories that a body can store, how a body feels emotion, and how a body processes emotion. So I think with that in mind, I think you are possibly right. I love a good bit of discourse myself. I love a good existential conversation when I don’t get too in over my head and feel like a dipshit. At the end of the day, I think it is really good to get it on its feet. I had a really cool time talking about all of these scenes with you and with Len. At the end of the day, there is a literally a moment where I go, “Can we just get up now, talk about it, and move through it?” So, yeah, I think you are right.

What is it like dealing with the weight of working on a film that is a science-fiction staple? Is there anything from the original film where you were like, “I demand we include this!” or is there anything that you were excited that they included?

Farrell: No. Not really. I really came to this as a fan of film and as a fan of the original as well. I really engaged with this script and with the concept of the whole story – the idea of the world that is created. As a film fan I was just like, “Wow!” When I saw that artwork I was like, “Fucking hell! I can really be in that frame?!” When I sat with Len I didn’t say it to him because I was really having a nerd moment where I was like, “Oh my god. I can be in that? That is really good and interesting.” So, no, I don’t feel that anything…I am trusting Len’s vision and I am trusting that there is enough. You know, the frame work of the story is the same. If anyone has read the short story….the original is not so much like the short story, and this is not so much like the short story. The short story is really fucking dark and fucking genius. What he achieves in 18 or 19 pages is so astonishing in how he can bend my cerebrum and have me guessing what is real and what is not. But that is a different film. That is Kafka and this is not that. I just trust and hope that there will be enough because it is a weird thing with remakes. I am having a bit of an experience now with remakes because of Fright Night and then this. Part of me wants to apologize, part of me wants to win over all of the old fans, and part of me wants to go “Fuck everyone!” [laughs] I don’t know what to do. You are dammed if you do and you are dammed if you don’t. There seems to be this thing where it is like “Why do a remake if it is just going to be the same exact thing?” So then you do a remake, reimagining, or a reinvestment in a story and it is different enough. Then they are like “They didn’t even put that thing in!” So you are dammed either way. I just hope that this will be an individual cinema experience. I really do. I hope that, like how I do with Fright Night, that fans of the original, like myself, will go watch it and say “Oh, we fucked up.” I am not beyond criticizing myself and my own work. But I hope the fans of the original enjoy it and I hope it finds a new audience. Maybe some people will go back and watch the original. Who knows?

Is there something in this movie that you can compare to the original in that sense where people are going to take away from it? Is there something that is really going to stick out?

Farrell: Conceptually there are some really cool things that we are filling in and there is the human aspect too, but that will be put in later. As far as a character stuff goes, there are a couple of really interesting…I wouldn’t even know what the fuck to talk about. It is so weird because we are right in the middle of it with 5 weeks left. I mean, the three breasted lady is in there. I know you wanted to…she was on the tip of your tongue. I could see [laughs]. I know where you were like. “The lady with the mask and the three…” [laughs] But you have to at the same time I think consciously have a nod of the head when you can have a bit of fun based on something that was offered up from the original and take that in. But as far as new stuff goes…I don’t know. The whole thing felt…the fact that it doesn’t go to Mars. There might be a little less extremeisms. There is not the scene where the eyes are exploding. There are no Martians and there are not…

Biel: I don’t know. I think the weapons, the hover crafts, and the other ways of transportation. I that is going to be pretty…it feels to me more intellectually mind blowing than it is like “Whoa! We have never seen this particular kind of effect before!” It is not necessarily that anymore. That was such a specific time where it was really still a challenge to do those types of things. Now we have such an opportunity and possibility to create those kinds of things. So it is more about weapons and things. Some of the weapons that we shoot…my gun is a 9mm Beretta, but it is automatic. It doesn’t exist. It actually would explode if we shot real bullets out of it.

Farrell: She is like fucking RoboCop on set. It is ridiculous.

Biel: It is amazing. It is an incredibly sexy and beautiful 9mm that shoots like a machine gun. It is kind of intense.

Farrell: Then there is this futuristic Bolo weapon that shoots a Bolo web that wraps around the body. As soon as it makes impact it lights up in a white flair and it wraps around like an octopus taking a body.

So that is what you were shooting…

Farrell: Yes. I was shooting someone and there is a magnetized system on it. So there are loads of stuff that are kind of cool.

This question is for Ms. Biel. Colin is out point of view character and his head is memory soup. So if he is our point of view character the reality of the movie is constantly changing. Do you feel that you are playing different characters each time we are entering a different phase of his memory salad?

Biel: Memory salad? That sounds delicious. What kind of dressing do you have on there? Is that vinaigrette?

Farrell: It was a two course meal. It started with memory soup and went to salad. [laughs]

Biel: That is a good question, but no. I don’t feel like…even though Quaid is our point of view and he is taking the audience along on his journey, which is quite confusing. I think an important element to my character is that she is very consistent. She is pretty consistent in what she believes in. There are many times where it is confusing, but I think she knows what they experienced together. She remembers it. She is a little bit unsure about how he feels about things a lot of the time, but she is aggressive in her consistency about “I need you to come with me and we need to do these things. I am crossing my figures that you will eventually remember.” Then when all of this different information starts coming at her and all of these different possibilities of Quaid maybe having been a part of this infiltration and the stealing of ideas and actually getting Cohaagen to find out where my father is – that gets a little confusing. But we are still maintaining this idea that Melina is very clear and more than anything believes in what this person remembers. It is kind of what were you saying about physically…we deal a lot with this idea of “Does he remember or does he just feel it?” Like you said, the brain is a memory soup. It can’t really be trusted but that feeling of “I know. I just know for some reason.”

Farrell: Yes. She represents the truth I think. I think Melina in the film is kind of the emotional anchor of the story. I really do. She represents the truth and Quaid represents the audiences’ disorientation as a result of an inability to grasp what is truly real and what is not and what is a construct of the mind and what is a construct of the cause and effect of experience. The whole thing, with all of the action, really comes down to “If you don’t give a fuck about what the characters are going through; the film just won’t work” It really won’t even with all the gadgetry and all of the wonderfully conceived and creative visions of the future and what it may hold – if you don’t care about the journey of Melina, Quaid, or side with Cohaagen the film doesn’t work.

Biel: The scenes we did today are so important for those reasons because we only have three or four moments. If we haven’t gotten to you in your heart this first time we have two or three more to make you really want these people to be together. You really want him to remember her or you really want her to convince her.

It sounds like you are doing most of your own stunts, but is there anything that they won’t let you do?

Biel: There is always something. There is always…

Farrell: What is it? I want to do it now!

Biel: It is always plate glass or sugar glass. If you have to bust through glass…they never let you bust through glass because someone always gets cut even though it is sugar. So we are always requesting to do that kind of thing. So there is that, but pretty much everything else. We were talking about rolling off the elevator and that was really cool because we got to do all of that stuff.

Farrell: The insurance costs must be huge on these kinds of things. It was a lot of wire work from pretty high up. But I feel pretty safe and there is a lot of fighting. Those cars, while they were slamming into each other, were about as unsafe as I have felt in the 15 years of doing this shit. I am talking about 20 elephants, 80 horses, and 400 extras going on “Action!” and that was a bit safer.

Can you tell Sony Pictures is ramping up its marketing machine on behalf of Len Wiseman’s Total Recall reboot? First, we were given a teaser clip for an eventual trailer. And now we have a motion poster for the upcoming motion picture, which we’re sharing below courtesy of JoBlo:

The site also posted an exclusive one-sheet, which uses the same promotional image asking the audience, “What Is Real?”

That’s Colin Farrell playing Quaid, a factory worker who begins to suspect he might be living a double life as a spy. Arnold Schwarzenegger toplined to original Recall back in 1990, directed by Paul Verhoeven. The remake co-stars Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, Ethan Hawke, Bill Nighy and Wiseman’s beautiful wife, Kate Beckinsale.

On Sunday, we’ll reportedly be able to see the full trailer for Recall, which will be in theaters on Aug. 3. Motion posters and teasers for trailers are fine, but I’m waiting to see the full trailer before determining if this remake is staying on my radar. I think Farrell’s a great choice for the lead, and I’m one of the few who thought Wiseman did a bang-up job with the fourth Die Hard. What can he do with an updated Recall? We’ll soon find out.

With production set to begin on Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes at the end of the month, Francesca Gregorini is busy finding the supporting cast. For the followup to her debut Tanner Hall, which she co-wrote and co-directed with Tatiana von Furstenberg, the writer-director has just landed four actors to help bring the story of a doll babysitter to life. Yes, a babysitter for a doll. Interested?

Already cast in the film are Jessica Biel in the role of Linda and Kaya Scodelario as the titular Emanuel. The story follows Emanuel, a troubled teenager who agrees to ‘babysit’ her neighbor Linda’s baby, which is actually just life-like doll. Over time, Emanuel and Linda become closer, the latter being a spitting image of the former’s deceased mother. Variety reports that joining the two actresses in the quirky film are Alfred Molina, Frances O’Connor, Jimmi Simpson and relative newcomer Aneurin Barnard. Molina will play Emanuel’s father and O’Connor her stepmother, while Simpson and Barnard play a co-worker and the Emanuel's love interest, respectively.

While the story sounds a little reminiscent of Lars and the Real Girl, Variety also caught up with the director who said that the Ryan Gosling-led film “is an easy comparison, but it [EatTAF] veers away from that tonally… I consider it a psychological drama-thriller, with comedic elements.” I’m not exactly sure how the plot description fits into the ‘psychological thriller’ genre but, with this excellent cast, I’m excited to find out. Molina and O’Connor are both seasoned veterans. Jimmi Simpson is a true chameleon, amazingly funny on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and yet delicate and tortured in Zodiac. As for Aneurin Barnard, you can catch him in Ironclad on VOD and judge for yourself. Overall, a really excellent cast taking shape for what sounds like an interesting independent film.

After splitting briefly last year, Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake appear to have made good on their years-long relationship and gotten engaged. According to several anonymous sources tipping off Us Weekly, Timberlake and Biel took a trip to Jackson, Wyoming sometime in December and he popped the question there. As the tipster told them, "Justin knows how much she loves snowboarding and the mountains, so it was the perfect place."

In a fascinating interview with Vanity Fair earlier this year, Timberlake talked vaguely but clearly about how much Biel meant to him, even though they were broken up at the time-- explaining why he didn't really want to discuss the relationship, he said "I have to protect things that are dear to me—for instance, her. She is the single-handedly most significant person in my life. In my 30 years, she is the most special person, O.K.?" Reading through the lines of the article it seemed Timberlake was ready for a reunion; early in the article he said "I look back, and I made a lot of choices because I felt I needed to be validated. And I just don’t feel that way anymore.” It seems proposing to Biel must have been a choice he made for himself, not for the tabloid machine that went crazy over their relationship to begin with and could easily have led to the first split.

It's exciting any time you see two young, attractive people commit to each other-- if Us Weekly's sources turn out to be correct, of course-- but I like Timberlake and Biel both a lot (yes, even though she's had almost nothing but awful film roles). And with Britney Spears now engaged, it makes a weird kind of sense for her former flame and pop star beau Timberlake to settle down too. Mazel tov!

Shortly after reporting that Skins lead Kaya Scodelario has replaced The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara in the upcoming indie drama Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes, we’re able to bring you news on another actress close to signing a deal to appear alongside her.

Variety says Jessica Biel is in “final negotiations” to join writer-director Francesca Gregorini's film, a heartwrenching story (on the surface, at least) about Emanuel (Scodelario), a teenager hired by her troubled neighbor to babysit her “daughter,” which turns out to be a doll. The teen goes along with the woman’s delusion, primarily because the neighbor closely resembles Emanuel’s deceased mom. Talk about a sticky wicket.

Biel would play the neighbor, Linda, giving the beautiful actress her meatiest role since 2006’s Home of the Brave. Lately, Biel has bene coasting in cute and cuddly ensemble comedies from Garry Marshall, or slumming as the eye-candy in an Adam Sandler comedy. She’s certainly capable of much more, and Fishes could be the project that reminds people of that fact.

Gregorini, meanwhile, was expected to reunite with his Tanner Hall star Mara, though she had to bail on the production when the shoot schedule was pushed from the summer of 2011 to the beginning of 2012. Now we’re all able to speculate that Mara is keeping her calendar clear so she can begin working on The Girl Who Played With Fire if Fincher’s first installment in the Stieg Larsson trilogy takes off over the holiday season. Speculation, of course, but always fun.

While it hasn’t inspired as many rumors and casting stories as The Hunger Games, the Total Recall remake has been privy to its own share of movie news gossip lately. Within just the last few months both Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel have been mentioned in connection with the project, but until today, those juicy tidbits weren’t anything more than rumors. Now they’re official.

Through a shrewd bit of domestic pandering, director Len Wiseman has convinced his wife Kate Beckinsale to join Total Recall. She’ll play Farrell’s former spouse Lori. In addition, Jessica Biel has also officially boarded. Since she’s not the wife of anyone involved, we can assume her interest is more business than personal. According to Collider, she’ll fight alongside Farrell and his establishment-shaking brethren as Melina.

The first time I saw Total Recall, I was almost euphoric before the opening credits even rolled. Eleven years old, addicted to action movies and dumbfounded my parents let me rent it, I was convinced it was going to be the greatest film I had ever seen. Needless to say, it lived up to my lofty eleven year old expectations. Civilians were gunned down, chicks flashed their third boobs and I forged a new found respect for Arnold’s impressive killing capabilities. A decade and a half later, I was noticeably less excited when plans for the Colin Farrell-led remake were announced, but it turns out my early eye rolling may have been misguided. The additions of Beckinsale and Beal further fortify an already stacked supporting cast that already included Ethan Hawke and Bryan Cranston

Total Recall begins filming in Toronto this week with an eye toward a domestic release next summer.

Last week, a list of actresses vying for the one of the two female leads in the Len Wiseman-directed remake of Total Recall emerged. Today it seems as though a frontrunner has emerged.

Variety reports that Sony has offered Jessica Biel one of the two lead female roles in the project, though negotiations are not yet underway. Biel would either play Lori, Douglas Quaid's (Colin Farrell) wife who ends up being a spy who tries to kill him, or Melina, a resistance fighter who helps Quaid take down an evil politician named Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston).

While Biel is certainly quite beautiful, she has yet to really prove herself as a capable actress. I really hope that either talks fall through or she ends up playing Lori instead of Melina. This is a clear cut case of less is more.

Considering that Len Wiseman's Total Recall is set to start filming in May, the good folks behind the project may want to do something about casting. Guaranteed to be a high profile project - and one with a lot of components - Colin Farrell is the only name currently attached. Though we know that the story will be changed a bit from the 1990 Paul Verhoven version, going by the first film they still need to find actors to play the villainous Cohaagen and Richter, Benny, and George/Kuato, but it looks like they are starting with the women.

Deadline has received a list of actresses vying for the two lead female roles in the film. First there is Lori, played by Sharon Stone in the Verhoven flick, who is Quaid's wife who actually ends up trying to kill him. According to the site, both Kate Bosworth and Diane Kruger are being brought in to test for the role this week. As for the Melina, Quaid's ally and former lover who helps him free the people of Mars, Eva Mendes and Paula Patton are both reading for the part, though Jessica Biel and Eva Green are also possible options (Mendes is being considered for the part of Lori as well).

Not a bad list of actresses if you ask me (though I will admit some options are better than others). I've mentioned before that I am at least slightly curious how they will approach the story, and it appears that they are going at it with the best cast they can get. We'll be sure to report as we get more information.
