Although Robert Downey Jr. has spent the majority of his acting career over the last decade playing Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that isn't the only popular fictional character he's brought to life on the big screen during that time. In 2009 and 2011, he played Sherlock Holmes in the Guy Ritchie-helmed movies centered on the detective, and while the latter movie, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, set up the possibility of a sequel, it's been a slow journey towards making Sherlock Holmes 3 a reality. However, according to producer Joel Silver, it sounds like we're closer than ever to Sherlock Holmes 3 finally picking up steam. In Silver's words:

CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell spoke with Joel Silver about Sherlock Holmes 3 during the CinemaCon red carpet on behalf of Sony Pictures' upcoming Miss Bala, and judging by Silver's comments, the third installment starring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's creation might soon relinquish its spot in development and move into production sometime within the next year. Robert Downey Jr. mentioned last month that Sherlock Holmes 3 is one of several projects that's on his slate, and since it looks like Avengers 4 could be the actor's final outing as Tony Stark in the MCU, he'll have a lot more time to make these happen.

When we last left off with Sherlock Holmes in A Game of Shadows, the public believed him to be dead after, just like in the original short story "The Final Problem," he and his arch-nemesis, Professor James Moriarty, fell into Reichenbach Falls. While it appears that Moriarty met a permanent and messy end, in the movie's final minutes, Sherlock was revealed to have lived, and, having camouflaged himself within John Watson's office, he quickly went to the typewriter after the good doctor left the room, read the end of the memoirs and added a question mark after "The End." This chapter of Sherlock Holmes' cinematic history could have just ended on that loose cliffhanger, but if all goes according to plan, then Watson will soon discover that his best friend is still alive.

Back in late 2016, it was reported that Robert Downey Jr. and Warner Bros had assembled a writers room to hash out the Sherlock Holmes 3 script. We have yet to learn what story they're going with, but assuming that Sherlock Holmes 3 does indeed start rolling cameras sometime in 2019, then hopefully we'll learn some details about the threequel before the year is up. In the years since A Game of Shadows' release, Sherlock and Elementary have filled the void somewhat with their modern interpretations of the detective's mythology, but it'll be nice to watch a new Sherlock Holmes adventure set in that proper late 1800s period.

An unsolved mystery set against the backdrop of a tropical celebrity honeymoon may sound like something out of a big screen thriller, but the tragedy was all too real when, in August of 2015, 28 year-old Carmel Musgrove, personal assistant to Joel Silver, lost her life during a two-week work trip to Bora Bora. Now, Musgrove's estate has filed lawsuit against not only the producer, but his personal chef Martin Herold, and his production company, Silver Pictures.

Carmel Musgrove had been missing for less than a day when her body was found, drowned in a lagoon, in the early hours of August 20, 2015. Estimating a time of death around 1 p.m. the previous day, French authorities officially blamed five factors in the cause of Musgrove's death: alcohol, cocaine, fatigue, heat stroke and inclement weather during a solitary swim.

Having flown to Bora Bora at the beginning of the month, Carmel Musgrove was working during Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux's honeymoon celebration. On August 18, she participated in an all-day fishing trip with Joel Silver and others that was responsible, according to the French report, for her heat stroke. It was after her work duties had concluded that day that, she met with Martin Herold, which whom the suit alleges she was in a sexual relationship. The pair did not sleep together that night, however, and Musgrove returned to her own bungalow shortly after 11pm. Then, at midnight, she e-mailed Herold the message, "Xxx," and requested that the hotel bring her matches. The matches arrived at her room within the next 30 minutes and that was the last time that anyone saw Musgrove alive. There were no signs of a forced entry into her room, nor were there any unusual marks found on her body to indicate foul play.

Between shortly after midnight and Carmel Musgrove's time of death the following day, there are several alleged inconsistencies detailed in the lawsuit. For instance, Musgrove's bed was found still made the next day, indicating that she did not sleep in her room that night. An e-mail was nevertheless sent by Musgrove at 7 a.m. on August 19 and a wet bathing suit was found in her hotel room. The lawsuit directly questions why Musgrove would go for a late night swim only to return to her room to then take another swim sometime after 7 a.m. in the nude.

The lawsuit also delivers a number of speculative allegations, including the suspicion that Martin Herold may have reunited with Carmel Musgrove following her e-mail message. He himself e-mailed her at 6:03 p.m. the following day (seven hours before her body was recovered) asking if she needed anything. It was around then that Musgrove's disappearance had started to garner notice.

While Joel Silver testified that he was unaware of any drug use between Martin Herold and Carmel Musgrove, Herold did admit that he himself purchased a gram of cocaine while in Bora, Bora. The suit, however, alleges that a greater quantity may have been acquired.

The lawsuit, which Deadline says was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court last Friday, alleges that the defendants are responsible for four of the five factors said to contribute to Carmel Musgrove's death and, in return, compensatory damages are being sought. Regardless of how the court moves from here, though, the full details surrounding the tragic death of Carmel Musgrove may never fully come to light.

Fate really is a fickle factor in life. One moment, you're a sequel to a picture starring Frank Sinatra, and the next you're the first film in a run-away box office franchise. That's pretty much how it happened for the _Die Hard _ franchise, and if certain vital changes weren't made, we would be one 80's franchise short this very day. And it all happened thanks to a crazy accident involving a refrigerator box.

Author Brian Abrams recently released the Kindle Single, Die Hard: An Oral History, which explains the behind the scenes wheelings and dealings that made up the process of getting the iconic film off the ground. Interestingly enough, Die Hard was originally a more direct adaptation of Roderick Thorpe's novel Nothing Lasts Forever, which involved an aging detective and his rocky relationship with his grown daughter playing out during the siege of a skyscraper. However, screenwriter Jeb Stuart got into a fateful argument with his wife one night, and as he sped away from his home, a refrigerator box fell out of the vehicle in front of him. Thankfully, it was just a box, and not a full refrigerator, but the shock was enough to convince Stuart to revise the script in the following manner.

Yes, you read that correctly. Die Hard almost featured a more aged lead and a severe downer of an ending, and that's all due to the source material. Nothing Lasts Forever was the follow Roderick Thorp's follow-up to his previous book, The Detective. Since Frank Sinatra had played Joe Leland, the titular role in The Detective, he was the original choice for the role in the sequel. However, fate had other plans, and Joe Leland became John McClane, paving the way for a bartender from Jersey named Bruce Willis to take the role of a lifetime. To think, if it wasn't for that Frigidaire box, we wouldn't have the trailer below, or the iconic film that it sold.

Another funny fact about Die Hard is how it got its memorable title. Now, admittedly, Nothing Lasts Forever almost sounds like it belongs to a Danielle Steel or Sidney Sheldon book of the 1980's, a fact that more than likely wasn't lost on producer Joel Silver. As if on cue, Fate stepped in and bumped Silver over the head with the title, as it was originally meant for a Shane Black script that was being finessed at the time. Black did Silver a solid and let him walk away with Die Hard as the title of his new film, and in return that project was re-titled with a snappy new name: The Last Boy Scout, which also starred Bruce Willis.

To think, all of the changes made to Die Hard wouldn't have happened, if it weren't for the fact that a refrigerator box scared an angry screenwriter to death. It has to be said, the more faithful / downer version of Nothing Lasts Forever, starring Frank Sinatra, is an intriguing proposition. But if it had to be sacrificed to bring us to the party that was the siege of Nakatomi Plaza, then that sits very well with us. So let that be a lesson to you Hollywood: watch the signs, and take inspiration when it comes. Otherwise, you never know what you'll be missing.

The way things work nowadays, remakes and reboots tend to clog the multiplexes. When Hollywood tries something original, like The Nice Guys for example, audiences basically overlook it in favor of the familiar – from another X-Men movie to the latest Marvel blockbuster. So you can understand why legendary producer Joel Silver was asked if one of his most successful film series, The Matrix trilogy, could ever extend, or even be remade. His answer gives me hope that the Wachowski’s vision will be left untouched.

As you likely recall, 1999’s The Matrix was such an inventive, genre-bending piece of science-fiction, the Wachowski Sisters immediately were tasked with creating a sequel. They took it one step further and crafted a trilogy, delivering The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. The sequels didn’t quite live up to the original film, but it doesn’t sound like anyone is going to get another crack at it. When asked by Loaded if more Matrix movies were on the table, Silver said:

Joel Silver doesn’t close the door on ever revisiting the world of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and the Matrix. But in saying that the narrative was "seriously designed" as three movies makes it pretty clear that there’s no reason to try and add a fourth Matrix movie. That, naturally, leaves the idea open to a remake. However, seeing as how far ahead of the curve the first Matrix movie was – and continues to be – it would be decades before a young, still-undiscovered director would, could or should come around to try and reinterpret what Lana and Lilly Wachowski accomplished in that groundbreaking feature film.

All of this is EXACTLY what I want the producer of a trilogy like The Matrix to say. Not every franchise needs to extend its story for the benefit of a cash grab. And not every original idea needs to be remade again and again, because a brand has name recognition. Keanu Reeves is happy reinventing other genres with movies like John Wick and Man of Tai Chi. And the Wachowskis push the envelope in movies like Jupiter Ascending and Cloud Atlas. You might not love what they’re delivering, but at least they are trying. What do you think? A remake of the dystopian 1976 science fiction film Logan’s Run has been in the works for what feels like damn near forever. Over the years numerous directors and stars have been linked to the project, which seemed like it was never going to happen. Well now it has taken a big step forward, though who knows if this is the one we’ll finally see in theaters.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros., the studio that has been attempting to mount a remake of Logan’s Run since 2000, has hired Simon Kinberg to write the story treatment for the latest attack. He will also produce with Joel Silver, though a writer to be hired down the road will ultimately handle the full script.

Kinberg is a writer and producer behind a ton of superhero movies, including the upcoming Fantastic Four, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Deadpool. And just for good measure he dabbles in the expanding Star Wars universe as well with the Anthology films and the animated series Star Wars Rebels. Basically, if anyone has to handle a Logan’s Run remake, it’s in solid hands with Kinberg.

Bryan Singer was once on board to direct, and most recently Drive helmer Nicolas Winding Refn was going to steer the ship with Ryan Gosling on the hook to star. That was as far back as 2010, and though they were both linked for a long time, it never ultimately moved forward and they moved on to movies that will actually get made. Kinberg certainly has the clout to get a project like this rolling, but to play devil’s advocate, so did everyone else who has tried to get this party started.

A bona fide cult classic, the 1976 movie Logan’s Run is based on the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan. Set in an idyllic future society, everything is hunky dory and hedonistic, but the drawback is that your life ends at 30. When a little red light goes off in your hand, you must go through "Carousel," where you are vaporized and reborn. If you run, as some do, the Sandmen come after you. Logan 5 is one of these Sandmen, but when he is forced to become one of the Runners, he discovers that things are not what they appear to be, and the situation is, in truth, all kinds of messed up.

Given the current landscape of teen dystopias like The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, and Divergent, all of which are heavily influenced by Logan’s Run, it makes sense to try to bring this back to the big screen. It’s totally marketable, and with multiple novels in the series, it is a ready-made franchise, which is what the studios all want.

There’s no timeline for this new Logan’s Run, but maybe, just maybe, this will be the Runner that makes it out alive and finds Sanctuary.

There are certain movies that are able to avoid easy remakes by nostalgia-hungry studios because the roles at the heart of the stories are simply impossible for a younger actor to assume. We’ll likely never see a rebooted Raiders of the Lost Ark or Die Hard because no actor in his or her right mind wants to play Indiana Jones or John McClane and draw automatic unfavorable comparisons to Harrison Ford, Bruce Willis or other icons of the silver screen.

While he might not be as much of a household name as Indiana, Kurt Russell’s anti-hero Snake Plissken certainly belongs on that short list of characters you simply don’t touch … ever. And yet, Deadline says that producer Joel Silver and Studio Canal will remake John Carpenter’s 1981 classic Escape from New York, meaning some poor bastard is going to have to try and fill Russell’s shoes. Good luck with that.

The site says that Silver is planning “an entirely new take on the material,” which was originally about a convict hired to rescue the kidnapped President of the United States from the island of Manhattan which, in the distant future, exists as a walled-off prison for our nation’s worst criminals. Deadline also says that the reboot will attempt to set up a trilogy, and points to the success of Rise of the Planet of the Apes as a blueprint that the new Plissken movies could follow.

They said similar things when this idea was batted around a few years back, when Gerard Butler and Jeremy Renner were rumored for the role of Plissken. As it is, Escape from New York is one of those properties that Hollywood should realize worked once and won't work again (see the dreadful Escape from L.A. sequel, which failed to recapture the original’s magic.). But we’ll wait to see who they hire to direct the remake, and who they tap to reinvent Plissken for a new generation. Just to make you more upset, watch the trailer for the original, then brace for the inevitable news that a Big Trouble in Little China reboot is right around the corner as well.

Last June, mega producer Joel Silver got an itch in desperate need of a scratch. After being introduced to the world of the Carton Network series Ben 10, Silver decided that he wanted to make the property into a live-action blockbuster, learning from the mistakes made from Speed Racer. Well, now he's apparently found the guy that he thinks can give him what he wants.

Albert Torres has been hired by Silver Pictures to write the script for a Ben 10 movie. Torres previous work includes the 2008 dramedy Henry Poole is Here. He also did a rewrite on the script for the live-action remake of Akira. Variety says that the project still doesn't have a distributor, but it's expected that Warner Bros. will sign on due to the close relationship that Silver has had with the studio.

The show follows a teenager named Ben Tennyson who is a normal kid until he discovers a device called the Omnitrix. The device gives him the ability to transform into one of ten different alien creatures, all with their own specific abilities. The show lasted four seasons, running from 2005 to 2007. That series has since had a couple spin-offs, including Ben 10: Alien Force and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien. A new series, titled Ben 10: Omniverse, is scheduled to be aired in September of this year.

It's very easy to see why Joel Silver wants to make this into a live-action movie so badly. In addition to the multiple shows, the series is a marketing gold mine, as they've already made a number of animated films, video games, and toy lines, insuring that there isn't a single kid between the ages of eight and thirteen that doesn't have at least one piece of Ben 10 merchandise on their shelf. It could end up being a good movie, but that's really a secondary part of the plan.

People have been trying to recapture the buddy action/comedy vibe that peaked during the '80s for years, with varying degrees of success. By far the best attempt has been Shane Black's Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (pictured above)...but that may be because Shane Black wrote the first Lethal Weapon, the movie that best defines the genre. One of the scripts trying to recapture a little bit of that Shane Black magic is Fully Automatic, which pairs two rookie cops with a female Delta Force-r to take down a dangerous mercenary armed with stolen weaponry. The script originated as spec by Randy Feldman in 2002. Feldman is no stranger to the buddy action/comedy genre himself, having written Tango & Cash way back in 1989. Now it looks like Warner Bros. is trying to get the project up and running again, because THR says the studio has hired up-and-comer Michael Starrbury to take a stab at it.

Starrbury has been gradually making a name for himself lately, with several projects lined up. After breaking in with a drama script called The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, Starrbury has sold a comedy pitch to ABC and developed a pilot called Black Jack for Comedy Central. And he's managed all this without moving to LA; the thirty-something writer still makes his home in Minneapolis, MN, where those screenwriting bucks no doubt stretch quite a bit farther.

It's hard to tell from a one-line synopsis just how promising a script might be, but I wish Fully Automatic luck just because it's a genre I wish somebody could resurrect properly. Shane Black 's career is back with a vengeance these days, with him currently writing and directing Iron Man 3, and with a half-dozen other projects on his horizon. Still, I'd like to see a new generation kick a little life into the floundering world of squabbling cops and bickering detectives. The scripts are out there, I've read some of them, but somehow we just keep getting the likes of Cop Out. I suppose I could always just pop Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang back in the Blu-ray player...

You gotta love a good detective story. Hollywood certainly does, and over the years some of the best fictional detectives have made their way onto TV and movie screens, played by actors ranging from Humphrey Bogart to James Garner. We've seen Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe, Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe, and the troubled, broken men of James Ellroy's worlds. One classic gumshoe of the printed page who hasn't gotten his due in a while is Ross Macdonald's Lew Archer, star of over a dozen novels, including The Drowning Pool and The Way Some People Die. Now Deadline reports that Archer will be returning to the big screen in The Galton Case, courtesy of Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver.

Lew Archer is an old-school Southern Californian private dick in the vein of Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade. The Galton Case is actually the eighth book in the Archer series, but the producers are clearly hoping to launch a franchise if this movie is successful. Published in 1959, The Galton Case has Archer hired by a wealthy old woman to try and find her long-missing son and heir to her fortune. There's no writer attached to the project yet.

I remember discovering Macdonald's books in college during a "Detective Literature" class, and I'd love to see Archer back and done well. Macdonald's detective previously graced the silver screen in two films -- Harper and The Drowning Pool, starring Paul Newman -- and in the TV movie The Underground Man, where the role was played by Peter Graves. Brian Keith also played the role in a 1975 TV series that lasted a mere six episodes.

It's a real shame, but Dominic Cooper is almost assuredly going to be robbed of an Oscar nomination for his dual performance in The Devil's Double. Between the movie being released in August and only making a little over $1 million at the domestic box office, the Academy will probably look over it in favor or more populist or Oscar-bait-y fare. Fortunately that doesn't mean Cooper will be overlooked by Hollywood as a whole and is close to landing a new part that proves that.

According to Variety, Dominic Cooper is now in talks to star in Motor City, the new film from director Albert Hughes and producer Joel Silver. The movie is about a man who is released after spending time in prison and goes on a mission of revenge, hunting down the people that framed him for a crime he didn't commit. The trade's sources say that it was Cooper's turn in The Devil's Double that led to Silver offering the actor the part.

In addition to the Lee Tamahori film, the young British star played Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger and will appear later this year in Simon Curtis' My Week With Marilyn as Milton Greene. Cooper has also completed filming on Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the Timur Bekmambetov film adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith's novel, which is set to be released next summer.

At only 33 years old, Cooper has a bright future in front of him. He may not carry home a gold statue next February, but someone will always notice a phenomenal performance.

On the same days tabloids confirm that Jennifer Garner’s pregnant with their third child, Ben Affleck lines up work that could keep him out of the house for months. Coincidence?

I kid. Affleck’s been plenty busy developing his formidable directing resume, and it sounds like the helmer of Gone Baby Gone and The Town is about to add Line of Sight to his credits. THR says Affleck is in negotiations to helm and star in the Joel Silver-produced action thriller for Warner Bros. The story centers on an elite band of soldiers transporting an important load of cargo while contending with a global threat. Specifics of the script - conceived by Alex Heineman and tinkered on by Halo: Reach writer Peter O’Brien - were in short supply, though the trade does say that the hook of the project is that it’s told from the first-person perspective of one character, as a first-person-shooter video game would be told. Hey Affleck, be sure to ask The Rock how that worked for Doom.

If Affleck goes ahead with Line of Sight, he’d start it after shooting Argo, a political thriller that’s based on a true story. Set in 1979, the film explains how members of the CIA posed as Hollywood executives filming a large-scale sci-fi production in order to rescue captured U.S. diplomats in Tehran. So far Affleck has cast himself in the lead and has surrounded himself with Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Clea DuVall and Alan Arkin.

Having recently watched The Town a second time, I’m even more convinced of Affleck’s skills behind the camera. I’m glad he’s graduating beyond the mean streets of Boston, and I’m anxious to see where his storytelling interests take him. I’m hesitant about the first-person-shooter concept for Line of Sight, but a lot can change between now and then, so we’ll wait and see what develops.

Barbra Streisand hasn’t made a legitimate movie since The Mirror Has Two Faces back in 1996. This statement is only true if, like me, you refuse to acknowledge the existence of those Focker sequels. The nearly 69-year-old actress, singer, and occasional gay icon may be about to change that by starring in a movie for the producer of The Matrix. Don’t worry, she won’t have to know Kung Fu.

THR says super-producer Joel Silver is heading up an adaptation of the 1959 Broadway musical Gypsy and has Barbra Streisand in talks to star. Apparently they’re still a long way from actually getting her to sign on the dotted line, meetings with lyricist Steven Sondheim and others are ongoing, as a means of convincing her this adaptation is where she belongs.

Here’s the problem with this Gypsy idea. It’s sort of already been done. The original play (based on the memoir by Gypsy Rose Lee) has an awful lot in common with the already failed Cher/Christina Aguilera musical Burlesque, in that it’s about a young burlesque dancer and her relationship with an older, wiser striptease stage mom figure. Except of course, these days Barbra is considerably more classy than Cher and unlikely to strut around screen in some sort of age-inappropriate lingerie. That makes it pretty hard to imagine her involved in anything as unseemly as striptease, especially at her current age. Hey this movie’s sounding better than Burlesque already.

When you consider who the director was, Ridley Scott's Robin Hood should have been a lot better than it was. Instead, what audiences received was a fairly humdrum affair. There hasn't been a good Robin Hood flick since Robin Hood: Men In Tights in 1993 and that was a parody. We are long overdue for a good one and now the Wachowskis are taking a crack at it. THR reports that the Matrix siblings will tackle the myth next with Hood, a "modern, urban" take on the classic story. Set to write and direct, the pair has already begun reaching out to actors to play the lead with Will Smith's name being whispered. Joel Silver, who worked with the Wachowskis on The Matrix films and Speed Racer, will produce. The brother and sister are currently working on their film Cobalt Neutral 9, though the project has been slowed by financing issues.

While I like this idea, I can't say that I love it. The "modern, urban" thing has been done to death, but if ts the medium that the directors require to tell the story right than I'm not going to complain. Two requests, though: keep the pace active and don't include any songs from Bryan Adams on the soundtrack.

Warner Brothers have made their first smart move since taking on the He-Man live action movie: they're backing out.

Two years ago the WB set their man Joel Silver to work with toy maker Mattel on developing the project. Now the two-year option is up and according to Variety both WB and Mattel are allowing it to lapse in the face of differences over the direction the development was headed.

It hasn't been an easy road for the movie. Nevermind the obvious problems, like the fact that no one really cares about the He-man character any more, or that the first live action He-Man movie (Masters of the Universe, made back in 1987) showed the concept isn't really such a good idea. There have been write/script issues from the start which came to a head in the last few months.

Back in May there was news that a new writer was being brought on board and a bizarre new direction being taken, including the new title Grayskull. At that point it sounded like the entire thing was going to be a disaster and it sounds like WB came to the same conclusion.

What's next for the project? It all depends on whether Mattel can find anyone loopy enough to take up their doomed cause. Fortunately for them, there are plenty of people in Hollywood ready to take up the mantle of making bad ideas into worse movies.

The internet has been abuzz today with all the talk about Disney buying out Marvel Entertainment. Lest the other comic companies be completely forgotten, Collider has put it out there that Joel Silver wants to tackle Vertigo Comics classic horror hero Swamp Thing.

In the midst of press schmoozing for his winter release Whiteout Silver was asked about his feeling on 3D. His response: “I’m developing a picture now that I’d like to do…I’ll hopefully do Swamp Thing, which is a movie we’ve had for a long time. We think that would be great to do in 3D. There are a couple of projects I’m thinking about (for the format) but not everything.”

Really? Is anyone interested in producing anything besides comic book super hero movies? Before you Swamp Thing fans start getting excited, bear in mind there’s a reason he mentions only a couple of his upcoming projects in 3D. The guy has more stuff in development than the Obama administration, including a He-man movie, a Wonder Woman flick, yet another Lethal Weapon installment and at least a dozen others. It’s also a project they’ve had on tap for a while, meaning in all that time it’s never made it past talking point status. While 3D Swamp Thing has a nice classic horror ring to it, you can bet it will be a long time before it’s more than a glimmer in Silver’s eye.
