I hope you’re excited, because we’re finally going to be getting another Judge Dredd movie after all these years – and a huge director is already attached to it. While it won’t be on the 2025 movie schedule, there’s a chance we could see it in the next few years.

From who will be taking on this challenge to what the film is reportedly about, this is what you need to know about the upcoming Dredd film.

What Is The Dredd Release Date?

At the time of writing this in August 2025, there is no set release date for the new Judge Dredd film, which isn’t that surprising. The news was only really just confirmed in July that a movie was officially in the works, so it would be pretty shocking if we already had a release date announced.

That being said, there’s a chance that things might move fast, and it could appear on the 2026 movie schedule, but I would say we'll be more likely to get it in 2027. Honestly, that’s great, because that just means 2027 will have another great comic adaptation alongside the many other comic book movies coming out that year, like the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars and more.

Taika Waititi Is Directing

Now this is the big piece of news – according to The Hollywood Reporter, in July 2025, it was confirmed that Taika Waititi is going to be directing the new Judge Dredd film.

This is significant news. The director has made some of the best films of the last decade, many of which have gone on to become favorites among cinephiles. One of his biggest, Jojo Rabbit, earned six nominations at the Academy Awards and won Best Adapted Screenplay (Waititi wrote the film).

Besides that, he also directed Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as What We Do In The Shadows, Next Goal Wins, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Boy, and Eagle vs. Shark. He also worked in television, including the TV adaptation of the aforementioned Shadows, and directed episodes of The Mandalorian (one of the best shows on Disney+), Wellington Paranormal, Time Bandits, Our Flag Means Death, and more.

Honestly, I could not think of a better director to bring this violent and wacky character to life, and Waititi is going to rock it.

The Dredd Cast

So, as you can expect, there is no set cast yet for the Judge Dredd movie, mainly because it was only announced about a month ago, as of August 2025.

It’s not like this film won't be likely to bring us stars, though. There have been two big screen adaptations before this one – one in 1995, which wasn’t well-received, and another in 2012, directed by Pete Travis, titled Dredd.

The first film had Sylvester Stallone in the titular role, but also actors like Diane Lane, Rob Schneider, Armand Assante, and more. The 2012 film had The Boys star Karl Urban as Judge Dredd (which, honestly, is great casting), as well as stars like Olivia Thirlby, Wood Harris, Game of Thrones cast member Lena Headey, and more.

I’m sure that it won’t be long before we see some significant updates on casting in this film – and I’ll be ready for whoever gets the coveted titular role.

What Is The Dredd Movie About?

The story for the new Judge Dredd movie has been kept under wraps. We only know a few details from the Hollywood Reporter article above.

According to the pitch for the film, it’s said that the it will draw more inspiration from the comics than the previous screen adaptations. It will expand the world, as well as the dark humor that the comics are known for, and cater to today's sci-fi fans.

But that’s not it – the film is basically looking to create a new Dredd universe, so that there’s the possibility of using newly created characters to headline potential sequels. You thought there were enough upcoming Marvel movies? Think of a world with a potential Dredd franchise. Now that’s awesome.

What Is Judge Dredd?

If you don’t know what the comic is about, Judge Dredd isn’t from a comic called ‘Judge Dredd.’ The character appeared in the 1970s British anthology comic series 2000 AD. He's a police officer living in a dystopian future where officers are allowed to become ‘judge, jury, and executioner, essentially.’

While there are plenty who would use this power to their advantage, Dredd took it seriously and took out literally anyone who went against his moral code. The entire franchise is more of a satirical look at the justice system around the world, but it features and intriguing story and some intense illustrated moments of violence.

From there, the series became huge, spawning an entire franchise that went into books, video games, and more, especially in the U.K., where the comics originated.

Drew Pearce Is Writing The Script

The last official thing that we know about the upcoming Judge Dredd film is that Drew Pearce is writing the script, which was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter article above. Apparently, both he and Waititi are huge fans of the franchise and have been looking for a chance to work together for years – the new film was their opportunity.

If Pearce's name sounds familiar, it could be because he's written scripts for some notable films over the last decade. Some of his most well-known works includes The Fall Guy, Hobbs & Shaw, Iron Man 3, and more. He’s also going to be writing the script for the upcoming film The Thomas Crown Affair, according to Deadline.

Okay, this already has me so excited for what’s to come, and I know I’m going to be counting down the days until I get to hear more about this film. Judge Dredd is coming back, and I am not prepared.

Look, dude, I know. I’m not supposed to like the 1990s Sylvester Stallone Judge Dredd movie. I’m only supposed to like the more recent, badass Karl Urban version. And, I do love that movie. In fact, Dredd is my favorite comic book movie of all time. Still, I can’t help but have a soft spot for the original Judge Dredd. I’m sorry, but I love that movie. It’s definitely up there in my Top 50. Maybe even in my Top 20.

Why, though, right? Why is a movie that is obviously trying way too hard to be cool—and definitely way too hard to be funny with Rob Schneider’s casting—up there with films like The Wizard of Oz and Spirited Away for me? Great question (which I just asked myself); and I really had to think about it, since I normally just sit and veg out whenever I watch it. But, I came to a conclusion as to why I love it. Five conclusions, actually. And, if you think that’s too many, I knew you’d say that.

It's A Great Time Capsule For What Comic Book Movies Were Like Back In The ‘90s

If you were actually born in the ‘90s, and your strongest reference point for comic book movies are from the MCU, then I can understand why you would think that Judge Dredd is a cheesy piece of garbage. I mean, I was born in the early ‘80s, and I know a number of people from my own generation who share that same sentiment. But as somebody who grew up voraciously reading comic books in my youth, my kid self definitely appreciated comic book movies that actually looked like the comic books they were based off of. While you may laugh at Sylvester Stallone in the platform boots and the silly outfit, I used to live for that stuff. Still do, actually. Seeing it in Judge Dredd definitely brings me right back to my childhood.

Look, I used to watch every comic book movie that came out. And I mean every single one. Judge Dredd came out in 1995, which was the same year as Tank Girl. It was also just one year before Barb Wire starring Pamela Anderson, and two years before the original Spawn. For a time in the early 2000s, comic book films seemed to shy away from being too comic-booky (See: The original X-Men movies). It’s only now that being “comic-booky” is actually in again. Judge Dredd was doing it way before it was cool. And that’s why I cherish it.

It Was One Of The Very First R-Rated Comic Book Movies, Setting The Groundwork For Other Future R-Rated Comic Book Films

Watch Judge Dredd today, and you’re sure to think: “Wait. This was rated-R?” In fact, when my dad took me to see it back in 1995, we both wondered the same thing. The film isn’t explicitly violent or anything like that, nor does it have tons of swearing or even nudity. In fact, it was nothing like Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which my father also took me to see, back in 1991. I was shocked when I saw that movie, because characters were dropping F-bombs left and right. That movie actually felt rated-R. So did RoboCop, with its bodies being blown apart and cursing. Neither of those films were originally comic books, but both of them felt like they were, and they would both eventually become comic books later on, as well.

Judge Dredd, on the other hand, was adapted from a comic book, and it was rated-R, which was incredibly rare back then. Yes, you had movies like The Crow, Tank Girl and Timecop, but none of those films fully leaned into their comic book roots. Judge Dredd looks, feels, and even sounds like a comic book, and by openly embracing its roots, it paved the way for other rated-R comic book films like Deadpool and Logan in the process. Fascinating.

The Special Effects Are Still Pretty Cool

Judge Dredd might not be one of Sylvester Stallone’s most badass movies, but, alongside Demolition Man, it might be his most visually appealing. Looking like a cross between Blade Runner (for the Mega City One section) and, strangely enough, The Hills Have Eyes (for its Cursed Earth section), Judge Dredd is a mixture of styles that probably shouldn’t work, but ends up working all the same.

Then you have the awesome ABC Warriors, which were also from the 2000 AD series (which is a British comic outfit). Visually, Judge Dredd is just a really appealing, unique-looking film, and even if you don’t dig the story, I don’t see how you can’t appreciate those oh so ‘90s special effects. They’re perfect in their own way.

I Can Appreciate The Far Superior Karl Urban Dredd Even More Because Of It

Remember how I said that Dredd is my favorite comic book movie of all time? Well, I can mostly say that because I have something to compare it to. You might think this is an unfair comparison, but look at Joss Whedon’s Justice League and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The number one thing I hear people say when they applaud Zack Snyder’s Justice League is that “it was way better than the first movie.” But, what kind of metric is that? One film is good only because the other film is absolute crap? Is that how juxtaposition really works?

Thankfully, Judge Dredd isn’t crap. At least not to me, it isn’t. It’s different, sure—way different—from Dredd, but it isn’t crap. Judge Dredd’s tone is much more fun than Dredd’s. When Sly hams it up and bellows, “IT’S A LIE! The evidence has been falsified! It’s impossible. I never broke the law! I am the law!” it’s a lot more bombastic than when Karl Urban menacingly seethes, “Mama is not the law. I am the law,” in Dredd. But, having both versions of the character, I can appreciate and love them equally, which brings me to my last point.

It Was My Introduction To The Character

Lastly, if there was no Judge Dredd movie in the ‘90s, then I probably never would have gotten invested in the character in the first place. Back in the ‘90s, if it wasn’t Marvel, DC, or Image, I didn’t mess with it. So, I definitely never would have heard of 2000 AD. Sure, you may say I might have gotten into the character with the 2012 film, but I doubt it, because it’s hard to grab my attention these days. No, Judge Dredd hit me at just the right time. I was around 12 when it came out, which was just the right age to get me into the series.

And, besides, the 1995 movie is actually much closer to the comic than the 2012 version. Judge Dredd is actually kind of a satirical series, and the character is not supposed to be a good guy. He’s actually more of a fascist asshole who is pretty much the last cop you would want protecting you. So, more Sly Stallone’s Dredd than Karl Urban’s.

Hulu’s TV Highlights For March 2021

While we’re still waiting for the next season of Rick and Morty to arrive in our galaxy, fans of that particular brand of madness will be pleased to know that Season 2 of the Justin Roiland co-created Solar Opposites is coming soon to help fill that void. The animated side of Hulu’s TV lineup is represented in the family friendly sector as well, as another second season is headed our way with Trolls: TrollsTopia. So if you’re tired of constantly revisiting Trolls: World Tour with the young ones, help is on the way! Rounding out the trifecta of sophomore season madness, Hulu’s Into The Dark closes out its second frame with the ominous sounding entry Blood Moon. Horror, music, and off-color laughs; yet another interesting mix makes the Hulu library all the more exciting to revisit in March 2021.

Hulu’s Movie Highlights For March 2021

Shifting over to the movie side of the equation, there are even more interesting additions to behold. While we’re still waiting a little longer to see Ryan Reynolds cause some good-natured havoc in Free Guy, director Joe Carnahan’s Boss Level sees hard case Frank Grillo fighting to survive in a no-holds-barred fight against the evil Mel Gibson. Think of it as a more darkly comedic/ass kicking version of that very same sort of story. Meanwhile, as the Punky Brewster reboot is just about to get underway at Peacock, star Soleil Moon Frye is debuting a film about what it was like to be a kid star back in the heyday of the original series with her documentary Kid 90. Last, but not least, if you’ve been waiting to see Kate Winslet’s acclaimed performance in 2020’s Ammonite, Hulu will be bringing the title online in this very same crop of titles.

March 2021 is another month where Hulu subscribers will truly be getting their money’s worth. You’re going to want to keep an eye on the schedule, because as always, titles are subject to change and availability. So if you think you’ve got your dates mixed up, or something might have been delayed in its debut, come back to this handy guide to make sure your next round of entertainment is still in the cards. We’ll see you around this time next month, no fooling, as April 2021’s slate will be available for all of us to gawk and marvel at.

No company is quite like Disney when it comes to the place the name holds in popular culture. No other film studio has quite the same name recognition when it comes to certain types of movies. When you bring up a Disney movie, you're not only talking about a certain level of quality, but you're also talking about a particular class of feature. The phrase "Disney Movie" has a clear meaning understood by nearly everybody in a way that simply wouldn't be the case if we were talking about a "Universal movie" or a "Paramount movie"

A "Disney movie" is one suitable for all ages, frequently one designed to appeal to the entire family. Having said that, Disney has, over the years, made several movies, or acquired the ownership of movies, that are very much designed for more mature audiences. Because the name Disney represents the wider audience, the company has said in the past that those more mature films won't appear on the flagship streaming platform Disney+. And yet, rumors persist that maybe we'll see those more grown-up movies on the service at some point.

While MPAA ratings are as good a way as any to decide what products are acceptable for families and what are not, it's far from a perfect system. While I don't know if R-rated movies belong on Disney+, I think there are a few that, at the very least, would not be out of place on the service. I'm not necessarily suggesting these should be added, but I do think there's an argument to be made in support of that, as they are similar to films you can already find on Disney+, even if these are the more "grown-up" versions.

Logan

Over the last couple of months, the Marvel movies made by Fox have slowly been added to Disney+, namely the Fantastic Four films as well as most of the X-Men related projects. While none of these are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they are superhero movies based on Marvel comic book characters, so they fit perfectly with all the existing films of that type already found on Disney+. However, there are a few Fox/Marvel projects that don't seem likely to appear on Disney+ soon.

While I suppose Disney could add Once Upon a Deadpool, the PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2, both of the Deadpool films seem like long shots. They're also such separate and unique ideas, in addition to being very mature, that they don't feel like they're missing from Disney+. However, The Wolverine is being added to Disney+ in September, and there's no reason that X-Men Origins: Wolverine won't arrive at some point as well. At that point, the lack of Logan will be noticeable. Eventually one will be able to follow Hugh Jackman's entire journey as Wolverine on Disney+, but without the end.

Crimson Tide/The Films of Jerry Bruckheimer

It's hard to understate the level of success that Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney have had together over the years (not counting Pearl Harbor, of course). The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was the first PG-13 film to actually have the Disney name on it, and Bruckheimer also produced the two National Treasure films for the studio. However, beyond that, the accomplished producer made a collection of movies for Disney's Hollywood Pictures and Touchstone labels. Great films like Con Air, The Rock and Crimson Tide are all, technically speaking, Disney films.

I'm using [Crimson Tide](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CrimsonTide(film) here because it was the first "Bruckheimer/Disney action movie" and due to the action and violence, since it's between submarines more than men, being less visceral than the others. But honestly, while these are all R-rated movies for good reasons, they're also pretty straight forward action films and only different from Bruckheimer's PG-13 Disney movies by a few degrees.

Judge Dredd

Sylvester Stallone's Judge Dredd is not a good movie. I would never try and argue that, but it is ultimately a comic book action movie, largely in the same vein as many of the comic book action movies that you can already find on Disney+. Judge Dredd was rated R, but the filmmakers wanted the movie to be PG-13, and so this movie is pretty close to the border. The language is, by comparison to most of the other films on this list, incredibly tame, and while there is certainly violence, it's not all that bloody either.

If this movie had been made 10 years later, the filmmakers would have probably used some digital effects to clean up the blood and received the PG-13 rating they wanted. That wasn't possible at the time, but one even wonders if the film would even be rated R if it were released today as is.

Good Morning Vietnam

Good Morning Vietnam contains one of Robin Williams' greatest roles, for which he was nominated for an Oscar. On paper, the film is simply a "based on a true story" tale of a radio DJ trying to navigate the complicated world of the Vietnam War. It's not that different from other, similar films, some of which have been made by Disney. The only reason this one is R-rated is that Robin Williams never met a swear word he didn't like.

If there had been a desire to make this a more family-friendly movie, it could have been done, and likely without drastically changing the content that's there. It's a powerful film, and while the language can be strong, it's not about the language. There are certainly other Disney movies that deal with the realities of war and other mature subjects, and Good Morning Vietnam would fit well with the rest of them.

Good Will Hunting

Of course, if we want to talk about language, we should talk about Good Will Hunting. Made by Miramax during the Disney years, and earning Robin Williams the Academy Award that Good Morning Vietnam did not, Good Will Hunting has a couple suggestions of sex and a bit of physical violence, but likely the only real reason the film was given an R rating was that it catalogs over 150 F-bombs.

Beyond the fact that the Boston guys all talk like they're from Boston, it's a quality dramatic film with great performances and a happy ending. I'm not saying this one should be made available on the kids profile, but with the proper supervision, this is a story that the whole family can at least appreciate.

The dark side of the "family-friendly" label is that there's a feeling that movies like that are only for kids or that they're not interesting or challenging enough for older audiences. While Disney+ subscriber numbers certainly show us that, whatever we call it, there's an audience for Disney's films, there are movies that could potentially appeal to an older audience, and a mature younger audience, that could add a little of what some might feel is missing from Disney+ without making it feel like the service is something other than what it's meant to be.

Crossovers. You love them. I love them. We all love them! Whether it’s Batman V. Superman, Godzilla vs. Kong, or even The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones, who doesn’t love when two different franchises come together for a special occasion? But do you know which crossover I always wanted to see on the big screen? Robocop vs. Terminator. Yes, I know the Terminator (or rather Terminators) have faced off against RoboCop in comics and video games, but doggonit, I always wanted to see that epic battle on the big screen.

And not just that battle either. While yes, it’s still pretty amazing to me that we got Freddy vs. Jason in actual movie form and not just as some fan fiction on Wattpad, I do wish that we would see a lot more of these kinds of crossover movies than what we’ve already gotten. It looked like we were going to get that with the much-anticipated Men In Black/21 Jump Street crossover, but that has since been cancelled. So what crossovers do I wish came to the the big screen at some point? Well, about that…

RoboCop Vs. Terminator

Written by Sin City’s Frank Miller, RoboCop Versus The Terminator started out as a four issue crossover from Dark Horse Comics that pitted everybody’s favorite metal police officer against three Terminators. When Alex Murphy learns that part of his technology comes from Skynet, he decides that he has to take them down in the future. There was also another crossover in 2011 called Terminator/RoboCop: Kill Human where RoboCop travels into the past to prevent annihilation. So even RoboCop plays funny with time travel. And lastly, there were also a few video games, one for the Genesis, one for the Super Nintendo, and one for the NES, all with different stories!

Look, I love The Terminator series, and I love the RoboCop series. But while The RoboCop series might get another new film to breathe life into the franchise, The Terminator franchise’s future looks like it might be…well, terminated. But if you want to ramp up excitement again for the franchise, then look no further than making a RoboCop Versus Terminator crossover event right now. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see that? I know I certainly would.

Batman/Judge Dredd

I was going to pick Batman vs. Predator, but I think a Batman Vs. Judge Dredd movie would be even better. In the Batman/Judge Dredd: Judgment on Gotham comic, Judge Death ends up in Gotham City. But while chasing him, Batman jumps through a dimensional hole that lands him in Mega City One, where Judge Dredd, being Judge Dredd, tries to arrest Batman for being a vigilante. Judge Anderson helps Batman though, and there’s a whole little adventure wrapped up in four issues. It’s good stuff!

Like the last entry with The Terminator, Dredd could definitely use a pick me up. And while I would love to see Karl Urban reprise his role in another movie of his own, even I can admit that the best course of action would probably be to throw him against another, much more popular character. And who’s more popular than Batman? Plus, how awesome would it have been to see Batman in Mega City One? The answer is extremely awesome. And you know it would have been.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/The Ghostbusters

I know this list is all about versus battles, but how cool would it be if the heroes in a half shell met up with the Ghostbusters? Well, it happened… in comic book form. After a dimensional rift opens, the turtles find themselves in the Ghostbusters version of New York, and there are some ghosts that they have to contend with alongside the Ghostbusters. So who ya gonna call? Well, I don’t know. Dominoes, maybe? The Turtles love pizza, you know.

I desperately wished this became a movie. The idea of alternate reality New Yorks is a fascinating one, since it’s not a fictitious city like Gotham or Mega City One, but the same city. Just different. Plus, the turtles’ personalities would have meshed well with the Ghostbusters (well, I’m talking in hypotheticals, of course, since the original Ghostbusters wouldn’t—and couldn’t—come along for the ride). But whatever version of The Ghostbusters we’d have gotten, I’m sure there would have been personality to spare. I even would have taken the most recent Ghostbusters, because I liked them after all. And I would have gone for another ride with them, no question.

Archie Meets The Punisher

This is another one of those “Meets” stories rather than Versus, but I don’t care. I want to see Archie Vs. Frank Castle! In the one-off comic, The Punisher thinks Archie’s a bad guy, and wants to take him out. But when he realizes he’s wrong, he works with Archie to rescue Veronica. It’s ludicrous, but it’s a classic comic, and mostly only because it’s just so ridiculous.

But here’s the thing. The comic, which came out in 1994, was the cheerful version of Archie. What I want (And this is still actually a possibility) is the new version of Archie from Riverdale, which is already pretty dark and deals with death. So that’s the universe that I want The Punisher to invade. How cool would that be? And in movie form! Make it a three-night event!

Godzilla Vs. Charles Barkley

Screw Godzilla vs. Kong! (Not really). What I always wanted to see was the King of All Monsters vs. the King of All Rebounds. Charles Barkley was already in Space Jam, and that was ridiculous, so why couldn't Charles Barkley have his basketball spat with Godzilla as well? What started as a Nike commercial eventually became a one-off comic book. And while the story is paper thin, there have been movies made on thinner stories ::cough:: Battleship ::cough::, so I don’t see why that should have been a problem.

Godzilla vs. Charles Barkley is just so ridiculous, that it could've work. Look, Godzilla has fought many different monsters before, but he’s never fought Charles Barkley on the big screen. That’s one battle that I would have loved to have seen above all others. I mean, Shaq would have probably done it if somebody had dropped the script in front of him. So why not Barkley? It sucks that the opportunity never presented itself, because now the time has passed.

Fans of of the 2012 film Dredd got some very good news earlier this year with the reveal that the character would be coming to television. The movie was a critical hit and remains beloved by fans, but it wasn't quite enough of a box office success to earn a sequel on the big screen. Of course, the news of the TV show didn't mean that we'd be getting a small screen sequel to Dredd or that star Karl Urban would reprise the role, but we could hope. Now, we have reason to be encouraged. Karl Urban has revealed that he'll probably be back as Judge Dredd in the new series, saying this:

Karl Urban revealed that he is in talks to put on the helmet of Judge Dredd once more in an appearance at the Star Trek Las Vegas Convention, according to ComicBook.com, and it gives Dredd fans even more of a reason to get excited about Judge Dredd: Mega-City One. While the show was always going to revisit the world that was built in the movie, it was described as an ensemble series rather than one that would center around one particular judge. If Karl Urban does sign on to return as Dredd, we can bet that there will be a star of Mega-City One, and he'll be a very familiar face. Even if we don't get the series for a while, it already sounds like it could be great.

It's actually not too shocking that Karl Urban is in talks to play Judge Dredd on the small screen. Even if he's best known nowadays for his roles in the Star Trek films, he's no stranger to television. He headlined his own (unfortunately short-lived) series on Fox, and a follow-up to Dredd is definitely something that would appeal to him, based on what he's said in the past.

Karl Urban has spoken publicly about his desire for a second installment in a Dredd film franchise or a TV project. He clearly feels strongly about all things to do with Judge Dredd. Urban went so far as to say that such a story needs to be told even if he's not the star. Of course, he's also shown enthusiasm about donning the helmet once more, pitching Netflix and Amazon as potential homes for a TV series. If the details can be worked out, we can hopefully count on Urban back as Dredd again.

Comic-based TV shows are incredibly popular nowadays, and so the news of a series based on Judge Dredd stories from Rebellion Developments came as fabulous news to many. Unfortunately, the announcement back in May didn't include a premiere date, and we now know that we'll be waiting quite a while before we see Judge Dredd on the small screen. Rebellion CEO Jason Kinglsey has this to say about a timetable for Judge Dredd: Mega-City One:

Well, we did know that the project was in the early stages of development, but two years (give or take) still sounds like an awfully long time to wait before Judge Dredd debuts. Still, we shouldn't despair. In fact, it sounds like the folks at Rebellion intend to do the show as well as possible, whether that takes more or less than a couple of years. Considering that fans of of the two Judge Dredd movies have been waiting years to see the man back in action, producers will undoubtedly not want to rush their way through development and deliver something disappointing.

Luckily, Jason Kingsley also has some good news about Judge Dredd: Mega-City One. He went on in his chat with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar) to tease this about the stories that are to come:

No wonder the show is still a couple of years off! Combining macabre elements with insane plot twists and light-hearted fun can't possibly be easy. Fantasy should give producers the room to explore pretty much anything. The Judge Dredd character from the comics was a street judge working in a dystopian future; assuming the show follows at least the setting of the comics, not a whole lot of realism will be required. Viewers will just need to suspend their disbelief and go along for what will likely be quite a wild ride.

A big question -- and one that likely won't be answered for a while -- is who will play Judge Dredd himself. Karl Urban played the character in the 2012 film Dredd, and he has expressed interest in reprising the role for either a sequel or a series. As we don't yet know if Judge Dredd: Mega-City One will be a sequel to Dredd or a fresh take on the premise, it's hard to guess if Urban will be approached for the role. We'll have to wait and see.

Years after Pete Travis revitalized interest in the franchise with his 2012 cult classic film Dredd, Judge Dredd is getting a television show. That's right, all those fans who clamored for a sequel to the rebooted exploits of Karl Urban will get to jump into the chaotic future of Mega City One once again, but is this the same universe as the films? Here's what we know so far about the new project, titled Judge Dredd: Mega-City One.

Judge Dredd: Mega-City One is described as an ensemble show that follows a group of judges living in the iconic Mega City One that's regularly highlighted in the Judge Dredd comics and films. The action-drama is currently in the early stages of development, and no casting has been announced as of yet. In fact, Dredd himself isn't even named in the announcement, but we'll assume he's in there, though likely without Karl Urban under the helmet. One can dream, though.

EW reports that three executive producers from Dredd (Stuart Ford, along with Jason and Chris Kingsley) are attached to the TV show. That's great news for anyone who was a fan of the rebooted franchise, which has achieved cult status and a strong fan dedication despite a lackluster performance at the box office. The attachment of the Dredd team seems to indicate this version will remain faithful to the original Judge Dredd comics first created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra in the late '70s.

If you want to know why people are more excited about Judge Dredd: Mega-City One being closer to the Dredd franchise than the original Judge Dredd, which starred Sylvester Stallone, you likely haven't seen Stallone's version. While neither film was viewed as a commercial success, much of the fan love behind Dredd is rooted in the film being a more faithful adaptation to the comics than the over-the-top '90's adaptation. Creator of Judge Dredd John Wagner said in 2012 that while he loved the casting of Stallone as the character, he hated the portrayal in the film and felt it didn't resemble his character in the slightest. Wagner is a fan of the 2012 film Dredd, however, and remarked that Karl Urban was a fine Dredd, and he'd love to see Urban in a follow-up. I'm sure we'd all love to see the same, but what are the odds of Urban coming to Judge Dredd: Mega-City One?

Urban has expressed interest in returning to the franchise in the past. Furthermore, the actor is no stranger to television and had a great run on the now-canceled Fox sci-fi series Almost Human. Urban has championed his own return in the past, and has retweeted and pinned today's announcement to his Twitter page, so could that be a sign something is in the works? I know that's something I as well as many other Dredd fans are hoping for!

For those wondering what role fans played in making Judge Dredd: Mega-City One happen, we've received confirmation the Facebook fan page Bring Back Dredd has now become the official page for the new project. The cover photo includes a concept picture of Mega-City One with the tagline "Four hundred million citizens, every one a potential criminal." The fan page, which featured a little over 100k people prior to the announcement, has been a driving force in viral campaigns in drumming up support for the Judge Dredd franchise ever since Dredd released in 2012. Executive producers Jason and Chris Kingsley acknowledged these fans as well as others in the announcement and said their support and pressure is what made this happen. Fans everywhere should revel in this sweet vindication that Hollywood is paying attention to fan efforts, and all that internet ranting is paying off!

As someone who has been one of the voices pushing for a Dredd sequel, Judge Dredd: Mega-City One is honestly a dream come true. (Or could be.) Even if Karl Urban is not attached, I can't wait to hear more about it and what network (or streaming service) will sign on. Pete Travis' 2012 action thriller Dredd will go down as one of the most wholly underrated comic book movies of the last few years. A near-perfect adaptation of the Judge Dredd mythos, the Karl Urban fronted, single location thriller offered an awesome peek into a badass world that's more than deserving of further examination. However, the original script for the project was quite a bit different from the film, as it would've explored the evil and bizarre Judge Death character. Judge Dredd comic scribe, John Wagner, elaborated on what happened:

During a recent interview with Screen Geek, Judge Dredd legend John Wagner opened up regarding the earlier version of 2012's Dredd that almost materialized. Instead of the gritty, Die Hard-esque thriller that we eventually received, screenwriter Alex Garland wrote a script centering on the Judge Dredd character known as Judge Death. However, the studio didn't want to take the Dredd franchise into the fantasy genre, and eventually the idea was dropped altogether.

It's not that surprising to learn that FOX wasn't overly eager to delve into a Judge Death storyline. The character is a supernatural entity from another dimension where the very act of living has been declared a crime. Essentially a spirit with the ability to inhabit the bodies of other people, and phase through objects, this idea would've taken the Dredd narrative into a radically different direction. While the 2012 version of Dredd maintained a very solid footing in the realm of dystopian sci-fi, this story would've lunged headfirst into the fantasy genre. To put it bluntly: it's absolutely bonkers. Dredd was already a hard sell on mainstream audiences (primarily due to poor marketing) and this likely would've been even more difficult.

Of course, there exists a very real possibility that we may still get to see Karl Urban's Judge Dredd take on Judge Death at some point in the near future. The actor recently revealed that talks have started regarding the potential development of a _Dredd _TV series on a streaming platform such as Netflix, and it remains entirely plausible that Alex Garland's story ideas could eventually make their way to that medium. Nothing is guaranteed at this point, but we remain hopeful.

Though it got lots of praise from critics and fans alike, 2012's Dredd just didn't connect with audiences and only made $41.5 million at the box office. As a result, there hasn't been any news of a sequel, no matter how hard fans wish for it. Karl Urban, who played the titular character in the movie, has always said he'd be down to wear the helmet again, but he doesn't know if he'll ever get a chance to.

One of the most commonly proposed ways for Judge Dredd to return is through a series on Netflix, Hulu, or any of the other streaming services who are okay with lots of blood and violence. A 13 episode series would certainly help to fill the Dredd sized hole in our hearts. Comicbook.com recently caught up with Karl Urban and asked him if he would be interested in pursuing some kind of Dredd series. This was his answer:

No confirmations have been made, but it's always nice to hear that Karl Urban wants to return to the character. He certainly makes a strong point in that a new series would have to explore Dredd's background and character a bit more. The movie was great, but we're going to need a little more meat if we want to stick around for 13 or so episodes. Plus, Urban had to convey Dredd's emotions mostly through frowns, and as an actor it's probably hard to convey emotion with only using your mouth (anyone who's played Batman can attest to that).

Karl Urban is also right when he says that another Judge Dredd will happen eventually. As sure as the sun rises, Hollywood will remake and reboot until everything has been done 10 times over. It may or may not be connected to the one that people like, but it'll happen eventually.

He may not be Judge Dredd anytime soon but you can next see Karl Urban as a different beloved character like Dr. Bones McCoy in Star Trek Beyond in theaters on July 22.

The recent release of Deadpool may have proven that an R-rated comic book movie could turn a profit, but the adventure of Wade Wilson is not the only faithful R-rated comic book movie to hit theaters in recent years. Dredd achieved cult status in 2012, and die-hard fans have clamored for a follow-up film ever since. It turns out that Dredd star Karl Urban also adores the original Dredd, and he recently implored streaming services Amazon Prime and Netflix to consider producing a sequel in the near future. Karl Urban recently released the above tweet as a plea to potentially get Dredd 2 off the ground. The original film wasn’t exactly a box office smash, but it has gone on to achieve a cult following due to its incredibly respectful depiction of the titular character, and its willingness to portray unflinching levels of violence on screen. Rumors have swirled about a potential sequel for years, but nothing has ever really come of them. With this new tweet, the actor seems to have once again affirmed his commitment to the potential project by citing services such as Netflix and Amazon as perfect platforms for the adaptation.

Accompanying the tweet is a mockup for what the Dredd sequel could look like on the Netflix main menu. The fake film even includes an awesome synopsis highlighting how the sequel could potentially involve Judge Dredd handling the power vacuum left by Lena Heady’s Mama following her swift (and brutal) execution at the end of the original film. Dredd hinted at a dark, painful history for the terse, perpetually masked hero, so Karl Urban isn’t wrong when he claims that there’s a "goldmine" of potential story to tell for this particular character.

If there’s one thing we have learned over the last couple of years, it’s that a streaming service like Netflix could make an absolutely perfect home for a badass, visceral character like Dredd. Considering the phenomenal work they did with characters like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and – perhaps most importantly – The Punisher, it wouldn’t be a huge stretch of the imagination to see them absolutely killing a future Dredd sequel.

The overall response to Karl Urban’s tweet has been nothing if not positive. We live in an age where fans get what they want if they make their collective voices heard, so Dredd 2 might not be dead yet. Getting naked and baring it all in a movie can be a harrowing experience for an actor, and performers have a variety of reasons for keeping their clothes on, ranging from being uncomfortable to taking stand. As it turns out, Academy Award nominee Diane Lane has maybe the best excuse you’ve ever heard for not stripping down in Judge Dredd, you know, aside from not wanting to be seen naked in Judge Dredd.

The 1995 adaptation of the popular 2000 AD comic book is R-rated and full of violence, but not much in the way of nudity. It was an option, but, as Lane told Yahoo, she opted not to go that route out of concerns over how her ass would look compared to that of her co-star. She said:

This sounds like a solid reason to stay clothed to us. On screen nudity must be a nerve-wracking endeavor, to say the least, but who among us wants to go through all of that plus have to stand next to someone like Sylvester Stallone, who, even at 69-years-old (how is he 69?), still looks like he’s been chiseled out of a hunk of stone.

Diane Lane is 50-years-old, and if it feels like she’s been around for damn near forever, that’s because she has. Her career started at just 13, when she appeared opposite Sir Laurence Olivier in George Roy Hill’s A Little Romance. She then went on to star in the likes of cult favorite Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains and Francis Ford Coppola’s S.E. Hinton adaptations The Outsiders and Rumblefish, all before she was 20.

In a career that includes an Oscar nomination for her role in Adriane Lyne’s Unfaithful in 2002, and a role as Clark Kent’s mother in the DC Extended Universe, Judge Dredd may not be a high point (though I admittedly have a deep, weird love for that movie). It wasn’t particularly well received at the time, nor has it been embraced over the years. What the hell, they can’t all be hits, and she’s done just fine in the years since.

Lane has had a solid 2015, voicing the mother in Pixar’s smash hit Inside Out, and we’ll get to see her again shortly when she shows up in Trumbo, which could be a player come awards season. In 2016 she’ll reprise her Martha Kent role in the highly anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Adi Shankar is a producer who has helped bring such testosterone-driven movies as The Grey, Lone Survivor, Killing Them Softly and Dredd to the screen. After remarks from Dredd star Karl Urban got the internet a buzz for the possibility of Dredd 2, Shankar has been forced to step forward and set the record straight. In an interview with Dweeb Cast (above), we learn it's not as far along as any of us may have thought.

Here's what Shankar had to say about the possibility of Dredd 2...

To be frank, Adi Shankar seems frustrated by all the Dredd talk online that--by his estimation--makes it seem like Dredd 2 is guaranteed when it's not. He breaks it down:

From there the producer admits, he's the one "freaking out and leading the charge" of these conversations. As to who he is having these conversations with, he's vague on that, but quick to point out that the first Dredd didn't have studio backing. It was essentially an independent film, and it looks like Dredd 2 will be as well. "That changes the dynamic immensely, right?" Shankar explains. "Every country has a different distributor that bought the movie, so every one of those distributors has to sign off."

Essentially the future of Dredd 2 depends on the producers securing overseas sales ahead of production, or potentially ahead of a script even being completed. But Dredd was far from a hit, domestically or overseas. It only played in the U.S. for six weeks, and in that time the $50 million movie made just $13 million at the box office total. By contrast, Captain America: The Winter Soldier made more than that in just its fourth week in theaters. Overseas, Dredd netted just $22 million, resulting in a worldwide total of $35 million. Meaning Dredd was a flop no matter how you look at it. So selling a sequel overseas will likely be a major battle for Shankar.

Still, Adi Shankar is hopeful despite Dredd's box office failure because he believes the first reboot has "built an audience over time." Moreover, this producer is passionate about this project. "I'm a fan of this stuff," he says, "I'm not some douchebag in a suit who thought they could make a lot of money doing this. If anything the movie business is in a state of decline. Not an upswing."

That's not to say he's given up. If Dredd 2 doesn't work out, perhaps a Dredd TV series could be spun-off. "There's so many avenues to go with this," he insists. So in short, Dredd 2 could be coming. Eventually. Any final thoughts, Adi?

Okay, great.

Some say being a real fan means deeply loving what you love and sharing it with others. And some believe that being a fan means never letting go, even in the face of seemingly certain failure. This is why fans remain gung-ho about the idea of a Dredd sequel, despite the fact that Lionsgate has very few reasons to make it. Y'all just can't let it go: you've seen Judge Dredd twice onscreen, and it's just not enough. Greedy!

Now we've reached the petition phase. At the Emerald City Comic-Con (via Geeks Of Doom), Karl Urban urged fans that if they want a follow-up to 2012's grimy comic book adaptation, they best start signing petitions and liking the Dredd sequel Facebook page. Urban, who is currently in the on-the-bubble Fox series Almost Human, could use a career boost – we're years away from the next Star Trek movie.

Of course, the real problem here is the economics. Dredd reportedly cost $50 million to make, and it made only a $35 million worldwide gross. Compare that to Judge Dredd with Sylvester Stallone, which was considered a flop for making $113 million at the box office 17 years earlier - without 3D prices. The-Numbers.com says that Dredd made another $17 million on Blu-ray and DVD, which doesn't even take the film to the break-even point. Guys, this is not gonna happen, it's really not, no matter how many meetings people have with executives.

It is worth mentioning that Judge Dredd has a rich history in pop culture, and the most recent film generated largely positive reviews. From that angle, it's not hard to see why people are making a case for a follow-up. But if you're the money-men, you have to acknowledge that you'd be making a follow-up on the cheap, because $50 million ain't happening again. Once you start lowering your budget, you probably lose Urban. You lose Urban, you lose the few diehard fans who would otherwise make a return visit to Mega-City One. A cheap direct-to-DVD sequel could be good, but you'll be downgrading from Urban to someone like Craig Fairbrass, and you probably won't be able to actually go anywhere with it, trimming the dystopian-future budget. Basically, another cops-in-an-enclosed-space movie, this time cheaper. Best case scenario is something like the Starship Troopers DVD sequels, which rank from "OK" to "so-so," never recapturing the manic genius of Paul Verhoeven's original.

Wait... Paul Verhoeven's Dredd... well, there's an idea.

All things considered, a real and costly Dredd 2 is something we'd like to see, particularly with a growly Urban in the lead. But we're going to have to settle for short films and other such additions to the canon. But why so glum, chum? There are also plenty of Judge Dredd on the shelves at your local comic book store - literally decades of Dredd storytelling. Hell, one time he fought Batman! There's no shortage of Dredd-action for you, so, really, things could be a lot worse.

Whether or not you've seen the original 1995 Stallone film Judge Dredd, there's good reason to be intrigued by the upcoming remake, which is going simply by the name Dredd. It's directed by Pete Travis, who made 2009's goofy but enjoyable Vantage Point, but more importantly, it stars Karl Urban as the title character. You'll recognize Urban from practically everything, from Lord of the Rings to The Bourne Supremacy to the new Star Trek series, but Dredd is his first big action staring role. Though, if you look at the new Dredd trailer, you might have a hard time finding Urban at all. Take a look below and see if you can recognize the man underneath that helmet.

OK, so I get that in the original Judge Dredd movie the character wears a helmet, and in the comics he never takes it off-- but even though they've compromised by showing the lower half of Urban's face, it still takes a lot away from his charisma and from any attachment you can develop for the character. It's possible that Olivia Thirlby, as his sidekick, can carry a lot of the movie as well, but we see so little of her in this trailer it's hard to tell. And if you're intrigued by what looks like the entire plot setup, in which they break into a tower that's headquarters for the city's drug kingpin, I suggest you check out this year's Indonesian action instant-classic The Raid, which couples this exact same plot with some of the most astonishing martial arts you'll ever see.

Yes, it's unfair to prejudge Dredd just for having a plot similar to another film, and I still like Karl Urban enough to want to support this. But we've seen a lot of movies set in grim future police states, and Dredd seems to be drawing from the exact same playbook rather than creating something new. We can find out how it works for ourselves when the movie comes to theaters on September 21; meanwhile, everything else we need to know about the movie is over in our Blend Film Database.

Danny Cannon’s Judge Dredd, with Sylvester Stallone as a futuristic weapon of justice, falls into that category of graphic-novel adaptations that stumbled on the journey from page to screen. (Two words: Rob. Schneider.) The film took liberties with John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's gritty character, and the film… well, it didn’t work. Hollywood’s getting a do-over when it comes to Judge Dredd, however, and Wagner opened up to the L.A. Times on why this new version, simply called Dredd, should be better.

Wagner has nice things to say about Stallone as Dredd (though the revealing-the-face thing is a real bone of contention). He also says that he admires the budget that Cannon had back in 1995, though the money often was spent on characters ad robots that weren’t part of Dredd’s world.

Pete Travis (Vantage Point, Endgame) helms this new iteration of Judge Dredd, and he appears to have the blessing of the long-running Dredd creative team. Without question, this is a character and a world that could use a revision, though we’ll have to wait until Sept. 21 to see what they’ve come with.

Judge Dredd is Mega-City One's top-tier number one badass. He's the judge, jury and executioner on the mean streets of Mega-City. Most people are probably familiarized with the character thanks to the 1990s cheesy but entertaining action flick starring Sylvester Stallone, simply entitled Judge Dredd.

The game will see players traversing through more than 30 levels of non-stop zombie-blasting action. The more zombies you kill the more points you earn to unlock better items and guns, which in turn allows you to kill even more zombies. It's like the circle of life, except with death and it involves getting stronger by killing not living.

If you were like me when the original Judge Dredd film was released back in 1995, you were 11 years-old and not much about movies mattered to you other than violence and those foreign yet enticing mysteries called breasts. Dredd handled the first of those requests handily, leaving not much to the imagination about what would happen if you shot someone in the face with an exploding pistol round.

The film was widely panned by critics and comic fans alike (those that weren't 11), making the property one that actually deserves to be reimagined on the big screen, and that’s exactly what director Pete Travis is doing. September’s issue of Empire Magazine has apparently leaked around (to Bleeding Cool at least) and it features some new images of the Judges as well as the first look at young Olivia Thirlby whooping some ass as Cassandra Anderson.

The other images give you a closer look at Judge Lex, played by Langley Kirkwood, and a very encouraging quote from producer Andrew MacDonald regarding the way they approached the film.

There’s no denying that the 1995 film, although it will always hold a special place in some of our hearts, was a piece of trash. But the story was intriguing and in the proper hands it looks like it’s turning out alright, aside from the fact that the giant helmets look kind of ridiculous.

Dredd is due out near the end of the year, December 1, so check back regularly for updates and promos that are bound to start streaming our way.

Karl Urban is doing a Judge Dredd movie, and as much as the internet is prone to complain about Hollywood’s incessant tendency towards remakes, you have to agree this is a good idea. Sure the dystopian future of the Judge Dredd comics was done once before, but it was done terribly. Actually this is exactly what remakes are for: setting right once went wrong. Quantum Leap had it right.

So Judge Dredd is underway and while we’ve gotten a few grainy glimpses at what Karl will look like in his Dredd outfit before, this is our first truly good one. The image below comes from Bleeding Cool:

If you’re wondering why we aren’t seeing his face, stop wondering. You won’t see it. Though the awful Stallone version had him running around without his helmet to show off Sly’s famous visage, Urban has already vowed that his version will stick with the iconic UK comic on which it's all based, by keeping that helmet on. Not every actor can pull off a decent performance with that much of his face obscured, but after seeing Urban’s brilliant, chameleon-like turn as Dr. McCoy in Star Trek I’m willing to believe he can do just about anything.

This new version is being called simply Dredd and opposite Urban you’ll find the likes of Game of Thrones star Lena Headey and up and comer Olivia Thirlby. Dredd doesn’t have a stateside release date yet, but they’re shooting for December of this year in the UK.

Over the years we’ve seen many adaptations from various media, comics, novels, classic TV shows, and the originators have not always been happy with the product. Case in point, look up how Alan Moore feels about the adaptations of his graphic novels From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V For Vendetta, and most recently Watchmen.

This, however, doesn’t seem to be the case with Judge Dredd creator Josh Wagner. The author recently visited the set in Cape Town, South Africa and posted his thoughts on his Facebook account:

This bodes well for this, the second adaptation of his works, the first being the failed but infinitely lovable in my eyes Sylvestor Stallone attempt from way back in 1995.

Wagner then proceeds to answer what questions he can in the post comments particularly addressing changes Alex Garland made to the script and story to make it work on film. For more info, just head over to the extensive Facebook thread.

When you consider that the project has been talked about for the past two years with very little headway, it's amazing how quickly things have come together for the Judge Dredd reboot. Based on script written by Alex Garland (28 Days Later), directed by Pete Travis and starring Karl Urban, the movie is now in production and apparently going well enough that they can start making promises.

Digital Spy has learned that producer Andrew Macdonald has plans to bring the first footage from the film, titled simply Dredd, to Mark Millar's Kapow! Comic Con in April. The event itself was only announced earlier this week and the thought is that the convention will be the UK equivalent of the San Diego Comic Con. Said Macdonald,

It's still hard to know what to expect from this movie. We all know that it can't be much worse than the Sylvester Stallone version from 1995 and Garland holding the pen is always good news, but the first image from the shoot that came online a few weeks ago does look a touch goofy (they really need to shrink that helmet). It's hard not to root for the project, though, so my fingers remain crossed that what they have to show in April will blow fans away.

Ever since Karl Urban was confirmed as the new Judge Dredd earlier this year, nerds were satisfied that Dr. McCoy and/or Eomer would be embodying the comic book badass, but also wondering how they could ever rectify all the mistakes made by the 1995 Sylvester Stallone take on the material. The biggest question, of course, was about the helmet-- in the comic books the character never removes his helmet, but when you cast an actor relatively well-known like Urban, you kind of assume they'll want to show him off at some point.

Now the first image of Urban in costume has leaked from the set (via this Twitter account, which seems to be connected to the production in some official capacity), and you guys can breathe easy. The helmet is on but reveals the lower half of Urban's face, meaning we'll be able to see him without, you know, seeing him. Check out the full image below and compare and contrast it with this shot from the comics. I'll let you true Judge Dredd fans sort out all the details from there.

It's still somewhat hard to believe that it's happening, but fifteen years after Sylvester Stallone's crap fest Judge Dredd, Hollywood has decided to reboot with Karl Urban under the mask this time around. The film is already set to begin production in South Africa fairly soon under the direction of Pete Travis based on a script by 28 Days Later scribe Alex Garland, but now it will enter with confidence that comes with having a major studio at your back. THR reports that Lionsgate has picked up the rights to the film and will serve as distributor. In addition to Dredd, the studio also picked up the Jason Statham actioner Safe as well as the Simon West film Protection with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the lead. As previously announced, the new Dredd film, which will be in 3D, sticks close to the comics from which the character originates and sees Dredd as a law enforcement official with the rights to judge, sentence and execute criminals on the spot.

Given how talented Garland is as a writer (he also scripted the Danny Boyle film Sunshine and this year's Never Let Me Go), and Urban is as an actor (plus the fact that he won't be removing the helmet), I feel strangely excited for this film. I can't say that I'm thrilled to hear that the film will be in 3D, but I'm also not surprised in the least. Here's hoping that Travis can provide the film that Dredd fans can actually get behind.

On Friday we reported the newest casting announcement for the reboot of Judge Dredd, with Olivia Thirlby announced to play the role of Judge Cassandra Anderson. The news came only a few weeks after Karl Urban was named as the actor in the title role and seemed to indicate that the film is being fast-tracked. Now there's even more evidence to support that theory.

IM Global, the production company behind the film, has posted an entry for the project on their website which not only reveals the title, simply Dredd, but also provides a fairly nondescript synopsis:

While not jam-packed with information, the synopsis does give us the direction they are going with the film, which, it seems, is as far away from the Sylvester Stallone-version as possible. It's still unknown when the film is set to go into production or when a release date will be announced, but we'll be sure to let you know as soon as we find out.

A few weeks ago during Comic Con Karl Urban was confirming to anyone who would ask that he will indeed be playing the titular character in Judge Dredd, the latest attempt to bring the comic character to the screen following Sylvester Stallone's disastrous 1995 attempt. I didn't think there was much more to confirm about Urban's role in the movie, considering how many times he happily talking about his casting, but Empire has at least changed tactics and gotten the news from the producers instead.

"We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd," said producer Andrew Macdonald, as if we all didn't fall in love with Urban after Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. "We’ll be shooting in Johannesburg, it’s being directed by Pete Travis, we’re shooting with the people who did District 9 – and if we get it right, Alex has a couple of ideas for other stories as well. It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision."

Macdonald also promised to erase pretty much all your bad memories of the terrible Stallone incarnation of the story:

I would wonder why you'd bother to cast an actor like Urban if his face is going to be hidden the entire time, but I know the comic fans would murder me for it, so I assume there's a good reason. Shooting is apparently set to start this fall.

The great thing about Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy is that the New Zealand actor so transformed himself to play the lanky, southern Star Trek doctor that he’s almost unrecognizable as Karl Urban. So should he show up as say, Judge Dredd, you won’t look at the screen and wonder “hey why is Bones shooting people?” That’s an obstacle DeForest Kelly was never really able to overcome as McCoy. His portrayal was brilliant and utterly iconic, but ultimately there was a lot of him in Bones. Seeing him on screen as anyone else seemed almost impossible.

So now it looks like Karl Urban really might be playing the previously mentioned, potentially iconic Judge Dredd and that’s fine by me. He confirmed that he’s not only in contention to star in a reboot of the futuristic, lawgiving comic book character, but that he actually has the part.

Because Urban is the kind of actor who so transforms himself to take on the part, he's also ok with not showing his face in the film. In the comics, Judge Dredd keeps his helmet on and in a recent interview with Movline, before finalizing his deal, he told them he'd be keeping Dredd's mask on. He explains, "Dredd is enigmatic, the faceless representative of justice. His prevailing attitudes, his strength of moral character, and the strength of his actions are what speak volumes for that character."

The last time we saw Judge Dredd on screen it was 1995 and he was played by Sylvester Stallone. The movie was a flop, a failure, and the punchline of far too many jokes. The next time you hear someone grunt “I am the law!”, Judge Dredd’s trademark catchphrase, odds are it’ll be said with sarcastic derision and not affection. This new version, set to start filming this fall, was written by 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland and promises to take the material more seriously. Casting Urban, a talented actor with a gift for physical, demanding action is definitely a step in the right direction.

It’s easy to forget that Alex Garland started out his career as a hot young author who was heralded by many for his debut novel, The Beach (no, not the so-so movie that Danny Boyle would later direct). Now he’s somewhat abandoned the novel medium in favor of writing movies (28 Days Later, Sunshine). That’s one way to avoid having to live up to the hype. Change jobs!

Now according to comic artist Jock’s Twitter, it looks as though Garland has been hired on to write the reboot of Judge Dredd. For those who don’t know, Judge Dredd is a sweet comic about a world where the powers of judges, police, juries, and executioners have all been put into the hands of one group of men. One of which is Judge Dredd.

The reboot has been in the works for ages now, and it’s likely Garland is one of many writers to have worked on the project, but who knows? We can at least dream that this is a big step towards a tangible produc (and maybe even a Danny Boyle in a hypothetical directors’ seat).

Garland has a knack for genre flicks, so I imagine whatever he does with this script, it will at least be something new. I just hope it’s more 28 Days Later than Sunshine. I dug that movie and all, but seriously, what was with the burning killer dude at the end? Pass on that this time around, Alex.
