Rick and Morty Season 8 is taking a little longer to arrive than we thought, but at least the 2025 TV schedule is just around the corner. We knew previously that the Adult Swim series would return in the new year, but without the knowledge that it would seemingly break the fourth wall to address the elephant in the room. Based on this new clip, the animated comedy will indeed reference the casting drama surrounding Justin Roiland's firing, and I'm so excited to see more of this.

After the comedy series was forced to recast Rick, Morty, and many other Roiland-voiced characters on the show for the seventh season, Season 8 will hilariously feature Rick holding auditions to replace Jerry, which I'm sure will go really well. Check out the clip below!

The irony of Rick judging the voice quality of various Jerry replacements is not lost on me, and I think the Rick and Morty writers knew exactly what they were doing with this scene. It's hilarious to think about Rick pushing Jerry out of the family and replacing him, and maybe we're in for some deep commentary from the team about the behind-the-scenes drama.

While I found myself forgetting about the change early into Rick and Morty Season 7, I definitely saw comments from others who felt the show shouldn't have released Justin Roiland to begin with. Despite the troubling legal woes he faced at the time tied to sexual misconduct and other charges, many questioned if removing him would negatively impact the series.

The case against Roiland was ultimately dismissed, and the former co-creator spoke out about clearing his name. By that time, however, reports had surfaced speaking to how much of a disruption he had become to Rick and Morty, and it was suggested very little of the show's driving success was due to his contributions. Roiland has not returned to the series, and has since maintained a low profile in Hollywood.

To be clear, I don't think Rick and Morty would do anything to make light of any accusations against Justin Roiland or the legal issues that came out of that. I would imagine it would be a wink at the audience tied entirely to sound differences, noting that they're just as aware that there was a lot of stress in finding new voice actors for the beloved characters.

I also want to note that while Rick is hosting open auditions, I don't think this is a tease that Chris Parnell will be let go as the voice of Jerry Smith. While the American voice acting cast was replaced for the anime, I wouldn't have any reason to expect this show to see another major casting shakeup anytime soon. Then again, I never imagined the series would suddenly lose its co-creator, so we can only wait and see what the future holds.

2025 is just around the corner, and that's when we'll see Rick and Morty back on Adult Swim. Hopefully, we'll get more details in the new year as to exactly when that will happen and see more of whatever is happening in the above clip.

The notion of a TV show going through cast changes for one reason or another isn’t all that unusual. In some cases, an actor might choose to leave a show in order to pursue other opportunities. And, at other times, a character naturally runs their course and is written out, leading to a star being ushered out of a production gracefully. However, there have been a number of instances in which an actor has dramatically exited a popular show for more salacious reasons. And we’re going to talk about a number of those situations.

Mackenzie Phillips (One Day At A Time)

Mackenzie Phillips dealt with substance and alcohol abuse during her tenure on One Day at a Time. As her problems increased and she allegedly became erratic on set, the actress was fired after the fifth season of the Norman Lear-produced sitcom. After voluntarily receiving treatment, Philips was invited back to the series at the start of Season 7. But, as mentioned in her Biography special she was fired one more time early in Season 9.

Delta Burke (Designing Women)

Designing Women cast member Delta Burke, who played breakout character Suzanne Sugarbaker, left the beloved CBS comedy after its fifth season. At the time, Burke was having issues with series creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason. While appearing on the Glamorous Trash podcast years later, Burke said she and the EP “tried to kill each other” but “survived.” They eventually patched things up and teamed up again for a short-lived spinoff series, Women of the House.

John Amos (Good Times) 

Fans, like myself, would probably argue that Good Times – one of the greatest sitcoms of all time – changed tremendously after John Amos’ James Evans Sr. was written out following Season 3. That creative decision was the result of Amos being incredibly vocal about his frustrations with the direction of the show and even threatening the writers. As the actor explained during an interview, series EP Norman Lear called him up personally to tell him he’d been fired. 

Rob Lowe (The West Wing)

Before he dazzled on Parks and Recreation and after rising to prominence as a “Brat Pack” member, Rob Lowe starred on The West Wing. The show was originally set to center around his character, Sam Seaborn, though the focus shifted early on. Feeling underutilized as time went on, Lowe left the show after four seasons.

Roseanne Barr (Roseanne)

Roseanne Barr’s eponymous ABC sitcom was revived for a tenth season that aired in 2018, and it saw considerable success. Following its renewal, Barr was fired after posting a tweet about former government official Valerie Janet that was condemned as being racist. Her dismissal led to the cancellation of Roseanne and the conception of a spinoff sequel series The Conners.

Janet Hubert (The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air)

Two actresses portrayed Vivian “Aunt Viv” Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the first being Janet Hubert. By the NBC sitcom’s third season, she and lead actor Will Smith began to butt heads. Both were also dealing with situations in their personal lives. Ultimately, Hubert left Fresh Prince due to getting an unsatisfactory new contract offer and, years later, she and Smith made amends during the show’s 2020 reunion.

Kevin Spacey (House Of Cards)

House of Cards experienced a significant shake-up after Kevin Spacey was accused of being inappropriate towards actor Anthony Rapp while he was still a minor. Netflix eventually cut ties with Spacey and, as a result, he was replaced as the lead of the show by co-star Robin Wright.

Charlie Sheen (Two And A Half Men)

When it comes to an exit from a TV series, few get more dramatic than Charlie Sheen’s departure from Two and a Half Men. During the eighth season of the hit CBS show, he made headlines for partaking in wild parties and even entered rehab. Sheen’s fate was sealed, however, when he made disparaging remarks about series co-creator Chuck Lorre. Men would continue for four more seasons, with Ashton Kutcher taking over as co-lead.

Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy) 

There are a lot of moving parts to Katherine Heigl’s Grey’s Anatomy exit, but it was truly set in motion after the actress kept her name from Emmy consideration in 2008. Heigl did that because she didn’t think the work she’d done for that particular season was Emmy-worthy. In 2009, the Izzie Stevens actress accused series creator Shonda Rhimes and the producers of initiating long work hours for the cast and crew. And, in 2010, amid Season 6 of the drama series, Rhimes released Heigl from her contract early.

Valerie Harper (Valerie/Valerie’s Family/The Hogan Family)

Amid the second season of Valerie, lead actress Valerie Harper became engaged in a salary dispute with both NBC and production company Lorimar. It was after that season that the Emmy winner was fired, and she ultimately sued both of the aforementioned companies for breach of contract. The series aired for four more seasons – and had two more names. But, ultimately, Harper won her case and was awarded $1.4 million and future show profits.

Robert Downey Jr. (Ally McBeal)

Robert Downey Jr. had experienced a number of personal issues by the time he was cast for Season 4 of Ally McBeal, and they continued throughout his tenure. During that season, he was arrested in November 2000 for drug possession and was taken into custody again under suspicion of being under the influence in Culver City in 2001. With that, Downey was fired from McBeal.

Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent)

In 2017, amid the MeToo Movement, Jeffrey Tambor was accused of inappropriate behavior by his former assistant. Shortly after, one of Tambor’s Transparent co-stars accused him of misconduct as well. Amazon, which had renewed the Emmy-winning dramedy for a fifth and final season, officially fired Tambor in early 2018. His character, who was the lead, was ultimately killed off in the musical series finale special.

Esther Rolle (Good Times)

Esther Rolle took issue with some of the creative decisions made on Good Times, not unlike her co-star, John Amos – who was fired after Season 3 even though Rolle was more publicly vocal about her disdain. Given her discomfort, Rolle left after the fourth season when her contract expired. She did, however, return as a main cast member for the sixth and final season. 

Suzanne Somers (Three’s Company)

Some TV devotees may not be aware that Suzanne Somers exited Three’s Company after five seasons due to a salary dispute with ABC’s execs. Her attempts to renegotiate a new deal proved to be unsuccessful, and her contract was not renewed. Throughout the remainder of the show's run, Somers' Chrissy Snow would be succeeded by two other characters.

Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill)

Many were likely surprised when Chad Michael Murray was one of two major stars to exit One Tree Hill ahead of its seventh season. At this point, there’s been no clear reason as to why Murray, who played Lucas Scott parted ways with the show. Some contend that he was ready to leave, but Murray was even recorded saying that the network wanted to drop him to save money.

Lori Loughlin (Fuller House)

Veteran actress Lori Loughlin was starring on Netflix’s Fuller House when she was indicted as part of the 2019 college admissions scandal. In 2020, Loughlin pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud and was sentenced to two months in prison. Given her legal woes, Loughlin’s Aunt Becky was excluded from the sitcom’s final season.

Isaiah Washington (Grey’s Anatomy)

It was in October 2006 that Isaiah Washington made headlines after it was reported that during an on-set conflict with Patrick Dempsey, he insulted their fellow Grey’s Anatomy co-star, T.R. Knight, with a homophobic slur. Washington reportedly issued an apology though, by the summer of 2007, his contract with ABC was eliminated after Season 3. Washington did, however, reprise the role for a Season 10 episode.

Thomas Gibson (Criminal Minds)

Criminal Minds fired Thomas Gibson amid production on Season 12. As has been reported, Gibson, who was directing an episode at the time, had a disagreement with the episode’s writer. The scribe was on set at the time and, during an encounter with Gibson, the actor apparently kicked him. Gibson subsequently expressed regret over his actions.

Shannen Doherty (Charmed)

Few TV deaths were more tragic than that of Shannen Doherty’s Prue Halliwell during Charmed’s third season finale. In the years since she departed the show, Doherty has claimed that her on-set tension with co-star Alyssa Milano caused her to be let go. For her part, Milano said she was “sad” that Doherty blamed her for how everything panned out.

Danny Masterson (The Ranch)

While starring on Netflix’s The Ranch, Danny Masterson was investigated by police due to allegations of assault by multiple women. Masterson was soon fired from the series amid production on Season 3 and, in 2023, he was sentenced to prison.

Ruby Rose (Batwoman)

After leading Batwoman for just one season, Ruby Rose exited the Arrowverse show in 2020. The actress initially attributed her decision to the “taxing” nature of heading up a TV show as well as an allergic reaction to the latex in her costume. However, Rose later made claims of an abusive workplace against her ex-co-stars, The CW and more. Warner Bros. TV denied the allegations as did Rose’s former scene partners.

Cindy Williams (Laverne & Shirley)

Laverne & Shirley lost co-lead Cindy Williams early into the show’s eighth and final season. Williams became pregnant early into production and, as she explained to Today, she wouldn’t sign a new contract due to the producers having her work on her due date. So Penny Marshall’s Laverne DeFazio finished out those last episodes without Williams’ Shirley Feeney.

Chevy Chase (Community)

It’s been well documented that Community’s Chevy Chase had creative differences with series creator Dan Harmon over his character, Pierce Hawthorne. While working on Season 4, the veteran funnyman reportedly had an on-set tirade during which he dropped the N-word. Chase departed the show shortly after that.

Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-0)

Daniel Dae Kim’s exit from CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 reboot after seven seasons came down to a salary dispute with the network. After the news of his departure was reported, Kim himself (who was one of the procedural’s most recognizable stars) addressed the situation, confirming that he and the network couldn’t agree to terms on a new deal.

Lisa Bonet (A Different World)

Cosby Show spinoff A Different World finished its first season on NBC in early 1988 and, afterward, lead actress Lisa Bonet announced her pregnancy with then-husband Lenny Kravitz. The sitcom’s incoming showrunner, Debbie Allen, wanted to keep Bonet on the show and depict her character, Denise Huxtable, as a single mom. But, as Allen explained years later, series creator Bill Cosby preferred that Bonet be dropped from the show.

Columbus Short (Scandal)

After three seasons on ABC’s Scandal, Columbus Short was removed from the cast of the hit drama series. It was during that time that the actor was dealing with personal issues and was even arrested on a domestic violence charge. Short later explained that he was cut due to his struggles with drugs and alcohol.

Gina Carano (The Mandalorian)

MMA fighter-turned-actress Gina Carano established a polarizing social media presence during her two-season stint on The Mandalorian. Among the controversial posts she shared was a message that seemingly compared being a modern-day conservative to being a Jewish person during the Holocaust. Disney and Lucasfilm fired Carano in 2021 ahead of the highly popular Star Wars show’s third season.

Nicollette Sheridan (Desperate Housewives)

Desperate Housewives star Nicollette Sheridan was written out of the show after the show’s fifth season, with her character, Edie Britt, being killed off. Several years later, the actress filed suit against Marc Cherry, the show’s creator and ABC. Sheridan alleged that Cherry assaulted her on the set and that she was fired for reporting it. Cherry provided an account of events and, in time, the harassment claims were thrown and Sheridan was unsuccessful in getting a retrial.

T.R. Knight (Grey’s Anatomy)

In 2009, T.R. Knight – who played Dr. George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy – left the show after the fifth season. Knight said his reason for leaving was due to a “breakdown of communication” with series EP Shonda Rhimes, his own decision to come out as gay and more. This also all came a few years after Knight was allegedly insulted with a homophobic slur by ex-co-star Isaiah Washington. 

Hilarie Burton (One Tree Hill)

Much has been said about Hilarie Burton’s exit from One Tree Hill after the sixth season. The most common assertion has been that the Peyton Sawyer actress couldn’t agree with the network on a new deal. Interestingly, while Burton recalled filming her final scene for the show, she noted that while shooting another sequence, a producer announced on set that the show was renewed for Season 7. However, both Burton and co-star Chad Michael Muray were surprised as they apparently hadn’t been offered new deals.

Justin Roiland (Rick And Morty)

Rick and Morty actor and co-creator Justin Roiland was fired from the Adult Swim show in 2023 after it was revealed that he was facing a domestic violence charge and other offenses in court. Roiland’s case was eventually thrown out later that year. However, the animator and voice actor was later accused of assault and messaging underage girls.

John Rhys-Davies (Sliders)

The sci-fi cult classic Sliders lost cast member John Rhys-Davies when the actor opted to depart after three seasons amid other cast changes. Sometime later, Rhys-Davies explained that he left due to conflicts with the writers. The veteran actor later explained that by the time he left the show, the scripts had become “incomprehensible gibberish.”

Now that we’re four episodes into Rick and Morty’s seventh season, it almost feels quaint to look back at all the worries about how the Adult Swim mega-hit would survive losing and recasting co-creator Justin Roiland. The new episodes kicked off with multiple new voice actors in Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden, who portray the respective titular characters, and despite some of the fandom falling back on disappointed hot takes, the relatively smooth transition has been embraced (or at least tolerated) on the whole. And even though Dan Harmon has taught himself not to seek out audience reactions online, he shared his thoughts on the recasting feedback he’s been privy to.

Speaking with Gizmodo about the Season 7 journey so far, Harmon seemed pleased to see that fans have by and large given Rick and Morty’s creative team the benefit of the doubt when it comes to recasting the various characters that needed voices in the aftermath of Justin Roiland’s firing in January 2023. He’s definitely aware of those with more hyperbolically negative takes, but isn’t allowing those voices to rise to the top of the slush pile. In his words:

The Internet has never been known as a place for subtlety, and Dan Harmon is on the money with his assessment of fans who think that Rick's voice being slightly off every so often means that all of the jokes, sci-fi plotting, and other actors' efforts are all pointless, and why don't we all just go dive into a wood chipper because nothing can get worse than an adult-animated comedy!! Ahem. Those who adhere to such viewpoints presumably aren't all that educated on how TV shows are made. 

Those kinds of overdramatized takes keep Harmon away from a lot of the more positive critiques and reactions to Rick and Morty, in the way that one bad apple can spoil an entire orchard. Here's how he put it:

Thankfully for his sanity, Harmon's friends and colleagues do reach out and send him examples of viewer praise and similarly pumped-up reactions from the fandom. So, for instance, he's been told that fans were loving this season's fourth installment, which featured the darkest spaghetti dinners known to mankind and beyond. Plus, the Community creator also praised the Rick and Morty subreddit for being a bastion of sanity and level-headed conversations amidst the cacophony of social media.

Mild spoilers below for anyone who didn’t watch Rick and Morty Season 7’s premiere, so be warned!

As much as Rick and Morty season premieres are always as highly anticipated as can be for an Adult Swim drop, the fervor hit a different pitch ahead of Season 7, with the installment “How Poopy Got His Poop Back” being the first to air without its co-creator and former star Justin Roiland, who was fired in January over previous charges of domestic violence and a string of sexual misconduct accusations from various females. Dan Harmon and current showrunner Scott Marder had to then make some difficult decisions about the animated comedy’s future, which led to the replacement casting of not just two new leads — Ian Cardoni as Rick and Harry Belden as Morty — but also another new voice actor as the fan-favorite Mr. Poopybutthole. 

In an interview with THR, the creative pair’s first to fully address the behind-the-scenes changes, Harmon and Marder talked out the ups and downs of having to replace such a core part of a hit series at a point when the writers are already deep into breaking stories for Season 9. When asked whether the original plan was to fill out the Roiland-voiced characters with separate actors for each, the showrunner confirmed that was indeed the goal, with the idea of not wanting to run new cast members ragged. In his words:

A completely understandable decision to make for someone in a position of authority. Roiland was as prolific a voice actor as could be within the world of Rick and Morty, not to mention his video games and other series, and is known for going off on improvised tangents, not always to the pleasure of the writers whose scripts reportedly weren’t being adhered to. In any case, those familiar with how much time Roiland spent on the mic were the most suited to figure out how best to delegate the roles and duties. In the end, having two different talents in the parts made the most sense considering what would be expected from them.

For the most part, Dan Harmon backed away from the recasting process, as he’d previously shared it was difficult as someone whose friendship with Roiland soured due to the show itself, with the series also reportedly used by the fired star as a way to personally connect with younger fans. As far as the general replacement ideas went, the Community creator spoke to the notion that publicly playing up the casting reveals would have been a disservice to fans being able to suspend disbelief concerning behind-the-curtain issues. As he put it: 

It’s not too hard to imagine that the Rick and Morty team might have wondered how hard it would be to make it all the way to the Season 7 premiere without ever letting fans hear what Cardoni and Belden sounded like as the grandfather and grandson. In the end, Adult Swim did release a wacky trailer with the new voices, which fans obviously had opinions on from the very first millisecond of footage. Merder & Co. did achieve the goal of not releasing the new actors’ names ahead of the premiere, as a way of further dampening the kayfabe, as it were. 

Were Major Celebrities Considered To Take Over For Rick And Morty?

Though the booze-fueled chicanery throughout the seventh season premiere was bolstered by a surprise guest-starring role from Hugh Jackman (awkward wedding photo reference and all), it sounds like there wasn’t ever a real chance of Rick and Morty following along in Solar Opposites’ footsteps by casting a well-known actor or two. (Dan Stevens replaced Roiland as the Hulu series’ Korvo.) After Dan Harmon joked about Elijah Wood rabidly attempting to woo his way into the Morty role, he and Marder agreed that landing a household name wasn’t nearly as important as finding actors who could bridge the gap while drawing as little audible attention to the switch-up as possible. According to the showrunner:

Even as a Solar Opposites fan who still enjoyed the heck out of Dan Stevens’ arrival in Season 4, I can attest to that show’s premise more naturally allowing for a character’s voice to completely change, while it would have been far more of an ear-sore for R&M, especially when it comes to repeats airing out of order. So even though the premiere’s audience was split over how successful the new actors were, that balance might have been far more one-sided with stunt casting involved.

Dan Harmon spent a chunk of his career as one of TV’s more outspoken creators and showrunners, but reversed course in recent years after past transgressions (and particularly icky and offensive online sketches) came back to haunt him. And as his merchandising monolith co-creation Rick and Morty grew in popularity, it was his comedy collaborator Justin Roiland whose behavior in and out of the workplace made headlines, culminating in domestic violence charges and a host of sexual assault accusations coming to light in 2023. As the Adult Swim hit readies its Season 7 premiere with new voice actors replacing the since-fired Roiland, Harmon has broken his silence about it all.

• Rick And Morty Season 7: Release Date And Everything Else We Know

For his first all-encompassing public profile in several years, Dan Harmon spoke with THR about his current situation as it compares to where he was at a decade prior while still in the throes of being rehired on Community, and reflected on the calamitous early seasons on Rick and Morty that led to his falling out with Roiland.

Dan Harmon On Recasting Justin Roiland For Rick And Morty

Though Justin Roiland’s felony charges were later dropped over insufficient evidence, the animator and video game developer had already been ousted from Adult Swim, and was also fired from his other TV and streaming series. The studio revealed that the sci-fi comedy would be recasting for the various roles that Roiland voiced, following a point when it seemed like the powers that be could actually renege on the massive episode order from years ago. Fans were finally able to hear the new (and currently unidentified) stars when the Season 7 trailer was released, and reactions have been largely positive.

Dan Harmon says he chose not to be actively involved with seeking out a Roiland soundalike for the casting process, saying it was a matter of denial, due to the conflicting goals involved. In his words:

Having to listen to a variety of voice actors come in and mimic Justin Roiland’s Rick and Morty performances (among other characters) apparently didn’t seem like a positive mental experience for Harmon. Giving due honor to a co-creator’s instantly recognizable character voices while also dismissing his presence and impact in most other ways is not a situation that brings many comparisons to mind from elsewhere in the pop culture sphere. It’s complicated, and it only makes sense for someone like Harmon to have complicated feelings about it. 

Dan Harmon Addresses Falling Out With Justin Roiland, And The Accusations

Despite all the ups and downs behind the scenes of Rick and Morty — which centered partly on Justin Roiland taking an affront to Dan Harmon bringing Community writers to the show in its second season — things were reportedly hunky dory once more after Adult Swim set up its 70-episode order in mid-2018. But the happy days soured anew, and the two men essentially ceased communication in 2019, with their personal relationship capping off with a harsh text message exchange that the former Harmontown host addressed, saying:

Fans may never know the specifics of what led to Harmon and Roiland’s seemingly permanent rift, unless they’d somehow reunite and both choose to address the falling-out publicly. After that point, Harmon largely avoided speaking much about Roiland in interviews regarding Rick and Morty, which remained the case through early 2023 after the Solar Opposites co-creator’s charges were filed, and after the initial sexual assault accusations were spread.

But while Harmon maintained that choice for the initial THR interview, he was contacted again days later, following the release of a new report that further detailed past and new allegations from women claiming they were groomed and/or assaulted by Roiland (which his lawyer denied in full soon after), who is said to have used his Rick and Morty clout to attract the accusers. In response to the resurfaced claims, Harmon had this to share:

Several Rick and Morty staff members have spoken out about Justin Roiland's alleged lack of input on the show in later seasons, claiming he largely just wanted to record lines alone without dealing with writers and oversight. Which obviously plays into the specific humor that's been at the heart of the show's central characters since the beginning. So one has to wonder if and how that will change going forward, with new voice actors who will likely be relying far more on scripts than Roiland supposedly did.

Rick and Morty Season 7 will arrive on Adult Swim with its new voices in tow on Sunday, October 15, with eps available to stream with a Max subscription. 

Adult Swim has been promoting Rick and Morty Season 7 like crazy, but there's been one notable omission in every piece of footage showcased thus far. Among other details about Rick and Morty Season 7, fans wanted to know what the new voice actors for the title characters would sound like. The latest trailer revealed just that, and while there's certainly a difference between old Rick and new Rick, Morty is almost a dead ringer. 

Just when it seemed like we wouldn't hear the new voices until the Season 7 premiere, Rick and Morty revealed both voices in the official trailer. My gut reaction is that if any fans were living under a rock and had no idea Adult Swim fired Justin Roiland following domestic violence charges against him and other controversies related to sexual misconduct, they wouldn't know anything is different. Most of the changes to the voices are negligible, and if I didn't know there was a change, I probably wouldn't initially suspect anything. 

I will say that while Morty sounds just like the Morty we've known in the previous six seasons, Rick does come off as just a bit different. Online commentary noted this version sounds a bit raspier than the original Rick voice, but overall, the overall consensus was positive. The moment that stuck out to me was when he yelled about "Rick's famous spaghetti" and I could tell it was a new actor doing the voice. 

The important takeaway, for me anyway, is that these voices aren't so different that they distract from the series. It gives me confidence that I'll be able to enjoy watching Rick and Morty Season 7 with my Max subscription and not worry about adjusting to a sudden new voice for a character like I did with Solar Opposites. With the worry about voices out of the way, I can now return to my wilder theories about Season 7 bringing back dead characters or the return of Evil Morty. 

For readers wondering why I haven't mentioned the new voice actors by name at this point, it's because we have no idea who is voicing the roles. Per THR, Adult Swim is keeping the names of the two new voice actors portraying the title characters secret until the night of the premiere. At that point, we'll likely see their names in the end credits, and there might be a more official announcement released on social media. I'm curious to see if voice actor Sean Kelly is doing the voice of Morty because many fans pushed for him after his viral TikTok impersonations. 

Whoever is voicing Morty did a helluva job, and I'd love to see them step in for Justin Roiland's other voice roles if needed. Different projects have had different strategies so far, for example, and I don't know exactly how these contracts work. All will likely be revealed in time!

Another set of troubling allegations of sexual misconduct have surfaced via a recent report about ousted Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. The irreverent animator is once again in the news following an article that detailed accusations from others about inappropriate text exchanges, as well as alleged sexual encounters with him (and others in at least one case). Roiland's attorney spoke out about the latest troubling reports surrounding the animator as the news circulates about other possible misdeeds by Roiland. 

A recent report from NBC News centered on extended interviews with several of the women and nonbinary individuals who'd previously shared their accounts of past experiences they allegedly had with Justin Roiland. Following stories, including one in which a woman claimed Roiland forced her to give him oral sex after she initially refused, his attorney Andrew Brettler gave the following reaction to the report: 

Beyond the aforementioned story, Roiland allegedly messaged many women over the years. These women, some of whom were underage then, shared their conversations with him for the article. The exchanges often featured Roiland calling them attractive and offering to fly them out to hang out. One woman recalled drinking heavily with Roiland while she was under the legal drinking age and having sex with him and another woman. The woman said the experience left her traumatized, and the power dynamic Roiland held in the situation made her uncomfortable with the experience. 

This was just one of many accounts of which NBC News said it had evidence of exchanges via text messaging and other online conversations. One common theme between the meet-ups with Roiland and fans was that another woman was reportedly involved, and Roiland would allegedly encourage sexual acts between them in addition to encounters with him. 

In addition to the above statement he gave, Andrew Brettler added that some of the accounts featured in the article had already existed online ahead of its release. The report comes months after the dismissal of charges against Justin Roiland for domestic violence, which ultimately led to the animator being dismissed from Rick and Morty. Roiland also stepped down from his gaming company and was ousted from his series Solar Opposites as well. After the charges were dismissed, Roiland posted the following statement on social media:

To date, Justin Roiland has not been invited back to any of his biggest animated projects. As for the characters he's voiced, Dan Stevens has stepped up for Solar Opposites to replace him, and Rick and Morty will use a soundalike actor when it returns for Season 7. Justin Roiland also hasn't made any major announcements regarding a comeback or a return to the world of adult animation. 

Rick and Morty Season 7 will premiere on Adult Swim on Sunday, October 15th, at 11:00 p.m. ET. No doubt there will be many tuning in to see how the show references Justin Roiland's exit, if at all, and how it'll fare without his presence. 

In early January, it was announced that voice actor and writer Justin Roiland was facing charges for domestic violence, although the court case against him was ultimately dismissed in March. Nevertheless, this legal drama resulted in him being fired from multiple TV shows he’d been starring in, including Rick & Morty and Solar Opposites, both of which he also co-created. Now word’s come in that yet another fan-favorite animated comedy has recast Roiland: Adventure Time.

Although the original Adventure Time ended back in 2018, fans can now revisit this fantastical world through the spinoff, Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, which premiered to Max subscribers on August 31. The latest episode, "Prismo the Wishmaster,” sees the return of Lemongrab, the shrill-voiced antagonist created by Princess Bubblegum who lives in the realm also known as Lemongrab. This time around though, the character is being voiced by RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon rather than Roiland. Monsoon was also heard voicing Normulon in the same episode. 

For those unfamiliar with Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, the show follows gender-swapped versions of the original Adventure Time protagonists, Finn the Human and Jake the Dog. Now the viewers are focused on Fionna the Human and Cake the Cat, and they’re just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to gender-swapped characters from the original show. To be clear though, Monsoon is voting both a gender-swapped Lemongrab as well as the main version. No official reason was given for Roiland’s recasting, so it’s hard to say if it’s also tied to the court case from earlier this year or stemmed from something else.

This is just the latest voice acting credit on Jinkx Monsoon’s resume, with her other work on animated shows including Steven Universe, Mighty Magiswords and Bravest Warriors. On the live-action front, Monsoon will appear in Doctor Who Season 14 as a mysterious character dressed in a piano-themed costume, which prompted fans to speculate on what this “major role” could be. The actress was also seen earlier this year playing Mama Morton in Chicago on Broadway. 

As far as Justin Roiland goes, along with the aforementioned shows, he was also let go from Koala Man, which, like Solar Opposites, can be viewed with a Hulu subscription. Speaking of Solar Opposites, Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens was tapped to take over the role of Korvo in Season 4, which premiered on August 14. Then there’s Rick & Morty, which will premiere its seventh season on October 15. It still hasn’t been announced yet who will take over as the title characters, although unlike with Solar Opposites, they’ll sound basically the same as opposed to drastically different.

Who will replace Justin Roiland as the voice of the titular characters and many others on Rick and Morty? That's a question that fans have been asking since Roiland's firing this past January, and the beloved, critically acclaimed Adult Swim series has not yet provided an answer – despite the fact that Season 7 is now just a month and a half away. Hopefully the actor/actors will be named soon, but today we at least have another thing to be excited about, as the official titles and descriptions for the have been revealed for the upcoming run of episodes. 

A total of 10 Rick and Morty Season 7 episodes will be released weekly starting on October 15, and the show's official Twitter account has posted a video that previews what fans can expect from the individual adventures. Some of the descriptions are too vague to be meaningful, but a number of them point directly at certain elements that get us excited. Check out the full rundown of titles and descriptions below:

1. “How Poopy Got His Poop Back” - Broh, come out with us. You’re being so boring, dude.

2. “The Jerrick Trap” - Gotta be mindful, broh. Big brain stuff here.

3. “Air Force Wong” - Virginia is for lovers, broh.

4. “That’s Amorte” - Broh, that’s a some good spaghetti.

5. “Unmortricken” - Rick and Morty wilding out, broh. They’re getting up to stuff.

6. “Rickfending Your Mort” - Gotta keep those receipts, dawg.

7. “Wet Kuat Amortican Summer” - High school, broh. Morty and Summer hang out in this one.

8. “Rise Of The Numbericons: The Movie” - Action! Adventure! It’s a whole movie, broh!

9. “Mort: Ragnarick” - Heaven is for real, broh. I saw it, broh, I swear.

10. “Fear No Mort” - Only thing to fear is fear itself, broh.

So what can we glean from these? For starters, it would seem that the Season 7 premiere will put a big focus on Mr. Poopybutthole – who fans will remember was last seen in the Season 6 finale trying to get over his divorce and exercising to excess. It feels safe to assume that "Air Force Wong" will somehow involve therapist Dr. Wong (who is voiced by Susan Sarandon), and there may be riffs on movies including The Parent Trap, Unforgiven, Defending Your Life, Thor: Ragnarok, and Wet Hot American Summer.

Perhaps the most intriguing of all, however, is what's going on with episode 8. The Numbericons were previously featured in the stinger of the second season episode "Get Schwifty," and it's kind of weird that they are coming back, but it's the "The Movie" part that raises the most curiosity. Is the description that it's "a whole movie" accurate, or is it just a joke? Could we be getting a 90 minute adventure, or perhaps is Rise Of The Numbericons: The Movie simply a film that the characters in the show go to see? At present, we have no idea.

Rick and Morty Season 7 is still slated to release in 2023, which is pretty impressive, considering the major controversy the show endured in the first half of the year. Justin Roiland's dismissal following charges of domestic violence left the acclaimed Adult Swim series without its co-creator and its primary voice actor for the titular characters. With that in the rearview, executive producer Steve Levy applauded the crew for pushing on, while just maybe lightly shading Roiland in the process. 

In light of Rick and Morty's Emmy nomination for Season 6's "Night Family," Levy spoke with the L.A. Times about the show's cast and crew following the legal drama and Roiland's ousting. The executive producer told the outlet it might have been an easy choice for all involved to sidle away from the show in recent months, but that everyone went in the other direction and helped make Season 7 special. In his words:

It's interesting that Steve Levy would imply Season 7 of Rick and Morty would improve in Justin Roiland's absence, but it's also perhaps not surprising to hear, even if it wasn't a direct shot at him. A report from THR back in February alleged Roiland had almost no creative presence on the series aside from his voice work, and that he took zero direction for his performances, often recording lines from home and sending them back to the studio sans oversight. Perhaps the implication there could be that a more cooperative performer might help improve the presumably already solid writing in Season 7? 

I'm eager to see how Rick and Morty operates without Justin Roiland in the mix at all, as the issues between him and co-creator Dan Harmon and others in the staff reportedly dated back well before the series scored its massive renewal deal in 2018. The show still found success and awards despite the alleged dysfunction behind-the-scenes, and thrived on oddball concepts such as "Pickle Rick." 

Justin Roiland has not spoken publicly about his removal from Rick and Morty or Solar Opposites, or much at all since the charges against him pertaining to domestic abuse were dismissed. The former co-creator published a tweet remains the statement he released following the dropped charges and a denial of what was claimed in reports ran about him: 

We know from SDCC 2023 that Rick and Morty will proceed with a soundalike voice actor for Justin Roiland, though no casting has been announced despite fan campaigns for certain talents. It sounds like the best play for the series to make if it's looking to minimize the impact of replacing the co-creator as much as possible, which sounds like the goal Steve Levy and others have in mind. We'll see if it's successful in Season 7 and how much Roiland's leaving will ultimately impact the show. 

Rick and Morty Season 7 is on the way, but fans can watch the series right now with a Max subscription. There's no telling what adventures are on the way for the Adult Swim series, though I am hoping we'll see more on the OG Rick storyline and where it's headed. 

Rick and Morty is gearing up for Season 7, but the upcoming episodes of the long-running Adult Swim series are going to be a little different. Those keeping tabs on the show between seasons are likely aware that series co-creator and the voice of the title characters Justin Roiland was fired following charges of domestic violence. Roiland was ultimately cleared of the charges, but his animated projects, including Solar Opposites, have moved forward without him for reasons beyond that. 

As for how each show has handled replacing Roiland's voice, they have taken drastically different routes. Rick and Morty executive producer Steve Levy revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 that they intend to cast a soundalike voice actor for all roles Roiland did, while Solar Opposites replaced Korvo's voice by bringing in actor Dan Stevens. Personally, I think that Rick and Morty chose the better strategy for replacing Roiland, despite a difference of opinions around the web. Rick and Morty seems to have the definitively better overall strategy, and I think others will agree as time passes. 

A Noticeable Voice Change Is A Distraction

While I think it's hilarious that Solar Opposites has hired an actor to play Korvo who has such a radically different voice than Justin Roiland  (and has a good way of explaining it), there's no denying that it's a distraction.  Korvo having a British accent all of a sudden may play as a great comedy bit, but the viewer will need to adjust to this change no matter how warranted it is. Even for a show as silly as Solar Opposites, it's going to take some focus away and pull the longtime fans out of the early episodes of Season 4 a bit.  

It's part of why I believe that Rick and Morty made the right call by committing to a search for a soundalike rather than trying to find someone notable to replace them. Sure, it would've been cool to see stunt casting like Christopher Lloyd voicing Rick and Michael J. Fox voicing Morty, but eventually, the fun of it would fade. Once the fun has faded, then the show has a problem and may have to potentially recast the voice role all over again. 

I should add that it's not uncommon in the history of animation to recast classic character roles. Just about every original Disney character has had multiple actors playing the part, and the same is true for Looney Tunes. Rick and Morty is doing what dozens of animated shows before it have done, and while some may feel that's an affirmation of Justin Roiland's talent, it's just what is done in animation when someone needs to be replaced.  

It Switches Up The Vibe

CinemaBlend's Jeff McCobb went to San Diego Comic-Con 2023 and saw the first two episodes of Solar Opposites Season 4 with Dan Stevens as Korvo. One of his main takeaways he had was there was an undeniable vibe shift in the character of Korvo. Though it was only his voice that changed, Jeff noted that the entire character had changed as well. He even went so far as to say that the new Korvo isn't as funny, which feels like a problem. 

I will concede I think that's also an issue that Rick and Morty could run into as well, even with finding a soundalike. Justin Roiland constantly riffed in the sound booth as both Rick and Morty, and an incoming voice actor may not be able to fully match up. Having the voice of the character could also potentially feel empty in spirit, which is an unfortunate side effect that can't be ignored. 

Perhaps the big takeaway, though, is that there's going to be a vibe shift regardless of who steps in for Justin Roiland in either role. That being said, minimizing it as much as possible is the correct path foward. It's possible that Justin Roiland's riffing was overhyped and that there are people on the Rick and Morty staff who know his comedic style well enough to replicate it for the next actor to take his place. That remains to be seen, but the show has had a solid run of success so far, so I'm not about to doubt it now. 

Future Fans Who Notice The Voice Change Will Look Up Why It Occurred

This might be wrong to assume, given we're entering an era of streaming where services are purging original content, but I'm holding on to the belief that future generations will have access to Solar Opposites and Rick And Morty. And while the controversy surrounding Justin Roiland is still very big topic in pop culture today, there will come a time when it fades, and future generations will forget... right up until they look up why Korvo's voice changes in Solar Opposites Season 4.

With Rick and Morty, depending on who is hired, the changeover will be smoother. There are some convincing soundalikes on the internet who can do the characters pretty well – to the point that I think unaware viewers won't know anything has changed when Season 7 premieres. (Assuming the show doesn't directly acknowledge it, and given how the Adult Swim series loves to break the fourth wall, I'm not ruling that out.)

I ultimately believe the best path forward for both shows, especially after reading about the reputation Justin Roiland allegedly had while working on Rick and Morty, is to distance itself as far from him as much as possible. Entirely changing the voices he did for the characters on the shows almost grants more power to what he brought to the roles; casting a soundalike more sends the message that anyone can be Rick and Morty.

Ultimately I'll tune in for both Solar Opposites Season 4 and Rick and Morty Season 7. While I may have different opinions on how each show handled Justin Roiland's sudden departure, that's not a knock on the quality of each show and the work that has been done moving on. Here's hoping for the best for each in their new eras and to the overall health they provide to the genre of adult animation.

If you’re a fan of Rick and Morty or Solar Opposites, you’ve likely heard that the series’ creator and Rick Sanchez himself, Justin Roiland, faced domestic violence charges and the ensuing backlash was significant. He's being recast for Season 7 of R&M, a matter that one producer just updated us on this week at San Diego Comic-Con, but he’s already been replaced by Dan Stevens as Korvo on Solar Opposites for the upcoming fourth season. Well, during the Solar presentation at SDCC 2023, fans were were treated to two episodes from said season, with Stevens’ turn as Korvo on display, and I have some thoughts.

Korvo Is Undoubtedly Different, But Solar Opposites Is The Same

I love the way Solar Opposites addressed Korvo’s voice change. They worked it into the Sci-Fi mayhem that we’re all accustomed to, and even mentioned it directly when Jesse said, “Wait, is his voice just gonna be like that from now on?” as you can see in the clip above. Who I disagree with is Yumyulack, who says, “No one’s gonna know the difference.” 

While that’s clearly a joke, I must clarify, it is very different. Fans on social media have been implying that the Legion actor embodies the spirit of Justin Roiland’s Korvo, but with a British accent, I simply disagree. It’s very different, it’s very noticeable and to me, it feels like a different character entirely. Having said that, the character's dialogue is clearly consistent with what we know about him, he has the same quirks and the show itself still carries the same overall vibes. This situation has really taught me how much a voice actor can shape their character and, while I personally feel like Korvo's vibe has changed significantly, the series itself has not.

Truthfully, Dan Stevens' Korvo Isn’t Quite As Funny

I like Dan Stevens, I always have. In fact, at this point in time, I like him much more than I do Justin Roiland. With that said, his version of Korvo just isn’t as funny. Don’t get me wrong, his performance is hilariously British, and the dude has notorious range. (He most recently includes balancing comedy and drama as a piece of the cast of Welcome to Chippendale’s.) But something about his vocal performance on the animated sci-fi show results in punchlines that just don’t quite hit as hard. Justin Roiland is known for a cadence that almost sounds as if he’s improvising, and that’s missing here. To reiterate, Stevens’ take isn’t bad, but it just doesn't generate as much laughs from this fan.

Justin Roiland Wasn’t The Funniest Part Of Solar Opposites Anyway

It could be argued that Rick is the funniest part of R&M, but Korvo certainly isn't the most humorous element within Solar Opposites. (Perhaps one of the things the show does better than Rick and Morty is ensuring that its characters get an equal share of the laughs.) Even if the casting change is an adjustment to the nonsense we’ve grown to love, the casting was never what made the show great. There’s still Gooblers, Shlorpians and a Pupa, with a series of other upcoming elements that are just as weird and amazing as what we’ve come to expect. I’m not going to spoil anything, but the upcoming episodes have some awesome voice cameos that will knock a fans' socks off.

Overall, my point is that while there’s nothing wrong with Korvo or Dan Stevens’ performance, the success of the show’s humor also isn’t hinged on it. After all, my favorite part of Solar is the drama that takes place within The Wall, which Korvo has almost nothing to do with.

So if there’s anything major you can take away from my ramblings, it’s that yes, you can expect a revamped Korvo but can look forward to a Solar Opposites season that feels similar to what we're accustomed to. I’m going to tune into Season 4 with utmost anticipation, and I suggest you do, too. The new episodes arrive on August 14 as part of the  2023 TV schedule, so be sure you have a Hulu subscription so you can check them out!

Back in January 2023, Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland was fired from the Adult Swim show shortly after he made headlines for facing domestic violence charges (that court case was dismissed by March). Because Roiland also voiced the two title characters, among many others, a search began to find his replacement for the forthcoming Season 7 and beyond. Now Steve Levy, one of Rick & Morty’s executive producers, has shared an update on how recasting is going.

Levy was among the Rick & Morty team members on the show’s panel for San Diego Comic-Con, and on the subject of who will be taking over as the adventuring mad scientist and his neurotic grandson, he had this to say to the audience (via THR):

Steve Levy’s comments come a few weeks after it was announced that Hulu’s Solar Opposites hired Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens to take over as Justin Roiland’s character, Korvo. However, while that show is deliberately making Stevens’ Korvo sound different, Levy later informed a fan at the SDCC panel that the new actors who are hired to play Rick and Morty will be “soundalikes,” adding, “The characters are the same characters — no change.” He expressed a similar sentiment last month, noting that he doesn’t think “anyone will bat an eyelid hearing the new voices” after saying that “the writing quality has never been better” for Rick & Morty Season 7.

That was the extent at which Levy was willing to talk about this subject, but if the recasting is almost finished, then it shouldn’t be too much longer until we learn who will be succeeding Roiland in these roles. Still, even once that information comes, we still have no idea when Rick & Morty Season 7 will premiere. That said, thanks to the show nabbing a 70-episode order back in 2018, it’ll be sticking around until at least Season 10. Chris Parnell, Sarah Chalke and Spencer Grammer will continue respectively voicing Jerry, Beth and Summer for the foreseeable future, and Dan Harmon, who created Rick & Morty with Roiland, is now serving as sole showrunner.

Assuming Rick & Morty Season 7 does drop sometime later this year, you can count on us adding it to the 2023 TV schedule once the premiere date is announced. In the meantime, you can stream the show’s first six seasons with either a Hulu subscription or a Max subscription.

Back in January, shortly after he was fired from Rick & Morty, Justin Roiland was also let go from the Hulu shows Koala Man and Solar Opposites. While it has yet to be announced who will take over Roiland’s vocal duties on the former two pieces of programming, Hulu has announced that Downton Abbey alum Dan Stevens will succeed him as the voice of Korvo in Season 4. The streaming service shared this big news with a clip debuting Stevens as Korvo, and it’s hilariously British.

For the Hulu subscribers wondering if Stevens will be doing his best to sound like Roiland in the next season of Solar Opposites, that absolutely will not be the case. The man who played Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey’s first three seasons will be rocking his natural accent, but not to worry, as the show has come up with a reason for why Korvo will sound so different, as you’ll see below.

Who would have thought using the Cheers dartboard would have led to such a drastic status quo change on an animated adult comedy series? (Also, am I wrong for thinking $100,000 is too steep for that piece of classic TV memorabilia?) Luckily, it takes mere seconds to cure Korvo of his dart injury thanks to the voice-fixing ray, but rather than firing the ray again to try and get his voice back to normal, Thomas Middleditch’s Terry puts the kibosh on that, preferring the way his partner sounds now. Even better for the Dan Stevens fans out there, every time Solar Opposites includes a flashback, we’ll hear him as Korvo rather than Justin Roiland thanks to the use of “chronitons.”

As shared in THR’s original casting report, Solar Opposites marks Stevens’ second collaboration with 20th Television Animation, having previously lent his voice to two episodes of Apple TV+’s Central Park. The actor’s other major credits include The Guest, Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast remake, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga and Legion, and he’ll also be leading the cast of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, one of the slated 2024 movies. Along with Middleditch sticking around, Sean Giambrone, Mary Mack and Sagan McMahan will continue respectively voicing Yumyulack, Jesse and The Pupa in Season 4.

All 11 episodes of Solar Opposites Season 4 will be released Monday, August 14, and along with a Valentine’s Day special set for next year, Season 5 was greenlit last October. While fans wait for the round of shenanigans from this alien family, look over the other funniest TV shows on Hulu, or browse through the 2023 TV schedule to see what’s currently airing or arriving soon.

It’s been close to a year since Rick & Morty Season 6 premiered on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block, and while we still don’t know when Season 7 will arrive, it’s been common knowledge for a while now that it won’t sound quite the same. In late January, co-creator Justin Roiland was fired from Rick & Morty, thus necessitating that a new actor be selected to voice the title protagonists, among many other characters. However, one of the Rick & Morty producers, as well as the network’s boss, feel this won’t impact the show heavily, as evidenced by the shade they directed at Roiland while talking about its future.

Producer Steve Levy and Cartoon Network president Michael Ouweleen appeared at Annecy International Festival, and they confirmed that the recasting process is still unfolding. Justin Roiland’s vocals “will be replaced” during Season 7’s post-production, but Levy thinks that that having someone else voicing Rick, Morty and the actor’s characters won’t lead to a diminished experience for the show’s viewers. As he put it (via Toonado):

Roiland was fired from Rick & Morty shortly after he made headlines for being hit with felony domestic violence charges, stemming from an incident in early 2020 involving an unidentified woman he was dating at the time. By March 2023, the court case against Roiland was dismissed, and he said in a public statement that he was “determined to move forward” and focus on both his “creative projects” and restoring his “good name.” However, there were numerous other allegations of abuse, misconduct and problematic behavior directed at him, which is likely why he wasn’t rehired onto Rick & Morty.

While no timetable has been set for when Rick & Morty’s new lead actor will be announced, Michael Ouweleen said he believes “it is possible” that viewers won’t notice Roiland’s absence when Season 7 premieres, whether it’s an established impersonator like Sean Kelly or someone who hasn’t been publicly brought up as a candidate. Ouweleen also pointed to a popular cartoon character from the Warner Bros. library as an example of someone who’s been voiced by multiple actors, but audiences have no issue recognizing who it is each time:

Although Justin Roiland created Rick & Morty with Dan Harmon, a THR story from February claimed that the two hadn’t been “on speaking terms for multiple seasons,” and that the former stopped showing up to the writers room in Season 3. While those who’ve worked with Roiland have largely been silent on what’s been going on with him, writer Heather Anne Campbell shared that she can’t tweet about him “for now,” perhaps indicating there will come a day when they are allowed to share their thoughts with the public. It’s also important to mention that Roiland was also fired from Solar Opposites and Koala Man, and there’s been no announcement of who will replace him on those Hulu shows.

Rest assured, once Rick & Morty Season 7’s premiere date is announced, you’ll find it in our 2023 TV schedule, assuming it’s not being saved for 2024. Until then, you can stream the show’s previous six seasons with either a Max subscription or Hulu subscription.

Back in January, Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland was fired from that Adult Swim show, along with Solar Opposites and Koala Man, after it was revealed he was facing charges of domestic violence. Two months later, the court case against Roiland has been dismissed, and the voice actor has now spoken out about this decision and working to restore his “good name.”

Justin Roiland had been formally charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit, but the criminal case against him was dismissed in Orange County on Wednesday morning due to there being “insufficient evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt,” as a spokesperson for the District Attorney told TMZ. Following this news coming out, Roiland shared the following statement on his Twitter account:

In his own statement, T. Edward Welbourn, Justin Roiland’s attorney, commended the Orange County District Attorney’s Office “for conducting a thorough review of the facts and deciding to dismiss the case against Justin. I’m thankful justice has prevailed.” The dismissed charges originated from a complaint filed in May 2020 by a woman identified only as Jane Doe. The specifics of what led to Roiland being arrested still haven’t been disclosed to the public outside of the incident happening around January 19, 2020, but the actor was ultimately arrested, then released on a $50,000 bond in August of the same year, and by the following October, he pleaded not guilty to those charges in an arraignment. A protective order was also filed against Roiland that expires this coming October.

Although this court case is no longer a concern for Justin Roiland, there were others who came forward with allegations of sexual abuse directed at him. The Rick & Morty writing team largely kept quiet during Roiland’s legal saga, with Heather Anne Campbell saying that she couldn’t tweet about his firing, but would when she could. With Roiland no longer associated with Rick & Morty, it has yet to be announced who will take over for him voicing the title protagonists and many other characters, although I’d like to think impersonator Sean Kelly stands a good chance at being selected.

The somewhat insular world of TV animation was thrust into the spotlight in quite the negative way earlier this year when Rick and Morty co-creator was fired from the Adult Swim series (and other projects) over a domestic violence complaint filed by an ex-girlfriend in 2020. While the backlash over that controversial situation has subsided, with the voice actor’s legal team still claiming he’s innocent, his former creative partner Dan Harmon earned quite a bit of good news for his other big TV show that exists far outside the portal-opening worlds of Rick and Morty.

It’s been nearly three whole years since Dan Harmon first signed a deal with Fox for the creation of another wild and wacky animated series, Krapopolis, which was initially meant to debut on the network in 2022. An actual premiere date still has yet to be revealed, but Fox just gave Krapopolis another form of fantastic news in the form of an official renewal for Season 3! So before we even get to fully sit down and enjoy this fantastical comedy for the first time, we already have the guarantee that it’ll be part of Fox’s animated lineup for years to come.

Krapopolis’ excellent update was announced at the London Screenings event, with Fox Entertainment’s President of Scripted Programming Michael Thorn at least confirming that the animated comedy will pop up on the network as part of this year’s TV schedule. In his glowing words:

Set in an ancient Greece that’s populated by both people and mythical creatures, Krapopolis centers on a dysfunctional family of gods, monsters and humans who attempt to prove their leadership skills by running one of the world’ first cities. To say it all goes smoothly would be to lie profusely. And speaking to Thorn’s claims about the show’s brilliant voice cast, the upcoming series does sport a solid ensemble featuring the following actors:

• Richard Ayoade as Tyrannis, the benevolent and mortal King of Krapopolis
• Hannah Waddingham as Tyrannis' self-destructive goddess of a mother Deliria
• Matt Berry as the oversexed and lazy mantitaur Schlub, Tyrannis' father
• Pam Murphy as Stupendous, Tyrannis' half-sister born to Deliria and a cyclops
• Duncan Trussel as Hippocampus, Tyrannis' half-brother born to Schlub and a mermaid
• Recurring cast: Stephanie Beatrix, Tara Strong, Dove Cameron, Alanna Ubach
• Guest cast: Susan Sarandon, Jane Lynch, Dave Franco, Will Forte, Yvette Nicole Brown, Michael Urie, Amber Stevens West

At this point, it’s clearly a good thing that Harmon didn’t bring Justin Roiland in for various voice roles in Krapopolis, or that show would be in the same boat as Rick and Morty by way of having to recast its lead characters. Though it’s not entirely clear what’s kept the animated comedy from hitting the small screen before now, at least we can take comfort in knowing Fox has all the gods-fearing confidence in the world that it’ll be worth keeping on the air for at least three seasons.

At a time when animated projects have been getting canceled and/or booted from their platforms outright — largely at Rick and Morty’s streaming home of HBO Max — Dan Harmon landed a whopper of a great announcement. Now we just have to wait and see which one happens first: Krapopolis debuting on Fox or Rick and Morty solving its Prime Rick mystery. 

Things are going to change a little bit when Rick and Morty Season 7 premieres, but, hopefully, fans of one of the funniest, and simply best, sci-fi TV shows in recent memory will not even notice the difference. In addition to cutting ties with series co-creator Justin Roiland following his charges of domestic abuse, Adult Swim has made to decision to continue on with the show and find a replacement actor to voice all of the characters he also plays.

Roiland — whose additional voice acting credits have included Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time and the Hulu original Solar Opposites, the latter of which he also co-created — actually outranks every other member of the Rick and Morty voice cast in terms of how many characters they play, similar to how Seth MacFarlane's voice makes up half of the Griffins, among other characters on Family Guy. It could very likely take more than one person to fill all of the shoes he has left, giving how eclectic this bunch of characters is, as you can see by checking out this breakdown below.

Rick Sanchez

Imagine if Doc Brown — Back to the Future’s eccentric, time-traveling nuclear physicist played by Christopher Lloyd, who actually played a live-action Rick in a funny promo — was a cynical, hard-drinking, emotionally reclusive narcissist. The result, in essence, would be Rick Sanchez, who is the smartest person in the Rick and Morty universe, but even unmatched intelligence has not prevented him from causing trouble for his family, those who just barely count as his “friends,” and every other living being, numerous times.

It might not actually be too difficult for Roiland’s replacement to match the cadence and mannerisms of the problematic scientist. In fact, the actor has demonstrated that getting hammered is often involved with the recording process. So, while we would never normally advise ingesting alcoholic beverages on the job, we suppose we can make a special case for the next Rick voice actor.

Morty Smith

The Marty McFly to Rick’s Doc Brown is his grandson, Morty, whose struggle with the common pressures of being a teen are only worsened by the increasingly dangerous situations Rick puts him through on a regular basis. However, the younger child of the Smith family has had his moments of showing genuine courage and bold confidence that has helped get himself and others out of a jam, even though years of trauma under his grandfather’s supervision is likely the cause.

Whoever does step in to play the first half of Rick and Morty’s titular duo likely could also play the younger second half as well, since the most distinct differences between their voices are the cadence and pitch. However, it is the complexity of Morty’s overall well-being — which can vary greatly episode to episode — that will be most challenging to match.

Mr. Poopybutthole

The differences between Morty’s voice and that of Mr. Poopybutthole are even less so, meaning even if he and Rick are played by different actors, the Morty actor could still easily play this fan-favorite. When we first met this bizarre character in one of the best episodes of Rick and Morty, “Total Rickall,” it was understandably assumed that he was merely the product of a memory-altering parasite infecting the Smith household. 

However, by the Season 2 classic’s shocking end, we learn that the top hat-wearing, inter-dimensional professor of mysterious origin was actually real the whole time. Since then, he has become one of the series’ most popular recurring characters, most often for fourth wall-breaking inserts, but the refreshing burst of optimism that comes with his presence in whatever capacity would be missed if the role was retired with Roiland’s exit.

Mr. Meeseeks

Another highly optimistic and a very helpful fan-favorite recurring character is Mr. Meeseeks, who is not just one person (and not even really a person, at that). As we learn in his (or their, more accurately) debut episode, “Meeseeks and Destroy,” they are summoned by the push of a button on a Meeseeks Box to help a person with a certain request and, once it is achieved, they no longer exist.

No edition of these powder-blue humanoids has made an official appearance on Rick and Morty since Season 4, but I think fans can agree that it is always fun to “look at him” every once in a while. Hopefully, they can help make somebody’s life easier in Season 7 and with an actor who can match their unnaturally high pitch.

Other Known Characters

We have pretty much covered all of the roles voiced by Roiland on Rick and Morty that count as main or recurring characters. However, there is still a chance we could see some minor one-offs return, such as the planet-sized, head-shaped Cromulons (as seen in the beloved classic episode,”Get Schwifty,”) or the Vindicators’ under-appreciated intern, Noob-Noob, who has only made a couple of non-speaking cameos since his Season 3 debut.

I would also like some indication of the all-knowing Truth Tortoise’s whereabouts, some confirmation that Mr. Always Wants To Be Hunted is actually of the same species as Mr. Poopybutthole if he ever returns, and maybe even a cameo by Glar (who helped Rick pull off a heist). More than anything, I would love to see any of the characters he voiced in the Interdimensional Cable episodes appear in their own follow-up segments — such as electronics store owner Ants in my Eyes Johnson, movie star Jan Michael Vincent, or another character who closely resembles Mr. Poopybutthole named Stealy.

The world may have actually already found the perfect replacement for Justin Roiland in the form of voice actor Sean Kelly, who has demonstrated his talents for flawlessly impersonating not just Rick or Morty, but also Mr. Meeseeks, on TikTok. Considering how impressively he can manage voicing those three important characters, I think it is safe to assume that Mr. Poopybutthole and any of the other smaller one-off characters we have mentioned would be a breeze for him as well. Just imagine what new characters an actor of his talent may also be able to create for the show. Wubba-lubba-dub-dub!

Justin Roiland's legal troubles have made him a major topic of interest in the news as of late and ultimately led to his dismissal from Rick and Morty and other shows he played a key part in. Those who worked with or alongside Roiland have been largely silent in light of the news, though a Rick and Morty writer's recent tweet suggests that responses will come eventually. 

Heather Anne Campbell, a writer for Rick and Morty Season 6, recently took to Twitter to address her silence about the situation. Campbell's message was short and sweet and provided a response for why she hasn't spoken about Justin Roiland's firing:

The tweet isn't loaded with the details fans might want from those who worked with Justin Roiland, though it does tease that Heather Anne Campbell will post her thoughts on it when she can. It appears that Campbell "can't" share a response freely at this time, which could mean there's an NDA or something else in place that could prevent her from speaking about it. 

Heather Anne Campbell's statement might explain why others in the Rick and Morty fold, like co-creator Dan Harmon, haven't publicly spoken about the incident. In a rare exception, a statement from the show's social media account revealed that Justin Roiland is no longer involved in the series, and that the cast and crew is hard at work on Season 7.

Justin Roiland is currently facing charges of one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit. Roiland has pled "not guilty" to the charges and will return to court on April 27th for another court hearing.

The alleged incident of domestic violence between Justin Roiland and an unnamed woman he was said to be dating reportedly occurred in mid-January of 2020. Roiland wasn't formally charged until May of that same year. He was arrested in August but later released on a bond of $50,000. Roiland was arraigned in October 2020, and court hearings since then have been related to the pre-trial process. Roiland's attorney has maintained the Rick and Morty co-creator's innocence and looks forward to helping him "move forward" after this is all over.

It's unknown whether any of those working with Roiland were aware of his legal situation, but professional action was taken only recently. Obviously, there are individuals who worked at Rick and Morty who can't talk about the situation currently, but as Heather Anne Campbell said, will when they can.

Rick and Morty Season 7 is headed to Adult Swim, though fans can watch classic episodes with an HBO Max subscription. The search is presumably on for a new voice actor for Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, and the internet seems to think they know who should get the job.

Rick and Morty co-creator and actor Justin Roiland has been making a lot of headlines lately, but not because of his work voicing the titular characters on the animated Adult Swim series. News broke earlier in January that he was facing two charges for an alleged domestic violence incident that occurred back in 2020. Now, Roiland's attorney has spoken up, and Twitter CEO Elon Musk contributed his two cents on the matter.

Justin Roiland's Lawyer Releases A Statement

Just days after Justin Roiland was fired from Rick and Morty despite his status as co-creator and voice actor, he attended a pre-trial hearing in court on January 26. The development comes after he pleaded "not guilty" to the charges back in 2020, which include one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit. Attorney T. Edward Welbourn, who is one of the lawyers representing Roiland, wrote a statement in defense (via NBC News):

The criminal complaint alleges that the incident that resulted in the two charges occurred in mid-January of 2020, making this pre-trial hearing (and Roiland's firing from Rick and Morty) almost exactly two years later. He wouldn't be formally charged until May 2020 and arrested in August of that year before being released on a bond of $50,000. He was arraigned in October 2020. This week's pre-trial hearing is only the latest, and no date has been set for trial at the time of writing. 

According to the outlet, Justin Roiland's lawyer revealed that there is a plea offer on the table, although no details about the offer are available. Relatively few details are actually publicly known at this point due to a protective order. What has been confirmed in no uncertain terms is that while Adult Swim is moving forward with more seasons of Rick and Morty after the sixth wrapped ahead of the 2023 TV season, Roiland will not be involved... and Elon Musk has thoughts.

Elon Musk Weighed In

Billionaire Elon Musk made plenty of headlines himself over the past year, with his purchase of Twitter landing him on CinemaBlend's list of the biggest pop culture moments of 2022. Unsurprisingly, it was on the social media platform that Musk spoke up with his thoughts on Justin Roiland being fired. In response to the Adult Swim post that announced the end of its association with Roiland and Rick and Morty continuing without him, Musk wrote on Twitter:

Roiland was certainly key to Rick and Morty's first six seasons as the voice actor behind the two main characters (and fans already have an idea of somebody who could replace him), but there has been no indication since his firing or Musk's tweet on January 25 that Adult Swim will reverse its decision. In fact, another platform has made moves to cut ties, with Hulu announcing the end of their association with Justin Roiland on Solar Opposites and Koala Man. Roiland co-created and acted in the former, and is credited as an executive producer on the latter.

Only time will tell what Justin Roiland's professional future looks like, how the legal case against him will proceed, and whether any further details become available despite the protective order.

Rick and Morty co-creator and voice actor Justin Roiland is officially out of the Adult Swim franchise. While it and other projects he was tied to look to move forward without him, the internet has already championed a successor. Out of all the potential imitators online, voice actor Sean Kelly has frequently come up as a suitable replacement in comment threads, thanks in part to his massive presence on TikTok. The content creator recently hopped online to thank fans for their support and might even be campaigning for the job based on his latest uploads. 

Sean Kelly, who can be found on TikTok as SeanKellySays, has a number of viral videos imitating Rick Sanchez, Morty Smith, and other characters voiced by Justin Roiland. The voice actor uploaded a video recently of his phone scrolling through the numerous comments of people requesting he become the next voice of the iconic characters, and just had one simple message for all those wanting him to take over the main voices of Rick and Morty: 

It's a short and sweet comment from Sean Kelly, who later noted elsewhere that he's sick and unable to record. Even so, it doesn't look like he wanted to go radio silent in the midst of all this drama, especially if Adult Swim is in the market for finding a new voice for Rick and Morty Season 7. 

And while Sean Kelly hasn't publicly advocated for Adult Swim to hire him as the replacement for Justin Roiland in Rick and Morty, he's not dissuading anyone from continuing to advocate on his behalf. In fact, one of his more recent TikTok uploads was a video where someone re-dubbed episodes of the series with impressions he's done. For those who haven't had a chance to hear Kelly in action yet, take a listen below:

He's not a dead ringer when it comes to voicing Rick Sanchez, but it's close enough that I'd think most Rick and Morty fans would forgive the difference. The voices for Morty and Mr. Meeseeks are spot on, though, and definitely ones where someone might not know the difference if they weren't aware of the legal troubles that resulted in Justin Roiland's dismissal. 

While Sean Kelly might be a strong candidate to voice the Rick and Morty leads, it's hard to know whether or not he'll actually be offered the job. Rick and Morty is a pretty out-there show, and replacing the character's voices with someone who sounds nothing like them wouldn't be the weirdest thing the show has ever done. Honestly, with all the incest storylines, I'm not even sure that would crack the top 3. 

It's worth mentioning that the last time Adult Swim had to replace the lead voice actor in one of its series, it did not go for anyone similar-sounding. After the Squidbillies franchise removed actor and singer Unknown Hinson from the role of Early Cuyler for disparaging remarks he made about Dolly Parton, Tracy Morgan was brought in to voice Hinson's character in the final season. Morgan is a talented actor, but in no way did he sound like the original voice of Early. 

It's possible that Rick and Morty would do the same if only to further disassociate its brand from Justin Roiland and his legal issues. Roiland is charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit for an alleged incident with an unnamed woman he was reportedly dating in 2020. Roiland is due in court in April for the charges. 

Fans of Rick and Morty can watch previous episodes of the series with their HBO Max subscriptions and keep an ear out for who might be the next voice of the animated characters. Hopefully, the search won't delay the premiere of Season 7, though if it does, one can certainly understand why. 

A day after Adult Swim execs made the decision to cut ties with and fire Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland from the animated hit, more axes have come down in the wake of Roiland’s domestic violence charges going public. His pair of streaming shows, Hulu’s Solar Opposites and the recently released Koala Man, are also distancing themselves from the scandal-tinged creator.

According to THR, both Hulu and the shows’ animation studio 20th Century Animation are pulling up anchor, saying this in a brief statement: 

Justin Roiland co-created Solar Opposites with Mike McMahon, a Rick and Morty alum who also showruns Star Trek: Lower Decks for Paramount+, while he served as an executive producer and voice actor on Koala Man, which was created by Michael Cusack. 

At this time, both Solar Opposites and Koala Man are expected to continue on with upcoming plans. The NSFW sci-fi comedy has been a hit for Hulu across its first three seasons and Disney-poking holiday special, and has been renewed through Season 5 so far. It's presumed that the other producers will find someone to replace Roiland in the role of Korvo and others, while still maintaining other stars like Thomas Middleditch, Sean Giambrone and Mary Mack. 

Koala Man, which boasts guest turns from Hugh Jackman and Alexandra Daddario (among others), has been received positively by critics and viewers since its debut on January 9. It's unclear if or when the streaming service will make a decision about the comedy's future, but given Roiland's general lack of direct involvement with the day-to-day creative process, this could be the easiest project to go forward with following his firing. 

Justin Roiland's pop culture impact isn't just going away on the TV side of things, but also in video games. On the same day the Rick and Morty news dropped, the company Squanch Games — which released the Roiland-created comedy-action video game High on Life on December 13, 2022 — shared the following statement on Twitter, revealing that Roiland had officialy resigned more than a week prior.

Similar to Hulu's plans for its two Roiland-free shows, Squanch will continue to               provide support for High on Life, which did not fare as well critically as the 2019 VR hit Trover Saves the Universe. 

Reports surfaced earlier in January that Roiland was charged over a 2020 incident involving an unidentified female with a felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury, as well as a felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or deceit. At the time, he was appearing in court for a pre-trial hearing, with the next hearing set for April 27, and his lawyer shared a statement declaring his client to be innocent of the "inaccurate" charges.

In the days immediately following, it was unclear if anyone in Hollywood would react in meaningful ways, and that silence only grew louder as allegations surfaced online saying Roiland used toxic language and slurs in DM exchanges with various females (at least one of whom was reportedly underage).

At this time, Solar Opposites and Koala Man can be streamed in full with a Hulu subscription.

Adult Swim has confirmed that it has cut ties with Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. Roiland, who has served as a creative force and as the voice of both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, will no longer be involved with the series after six seasons.

Justin Roiland's dismissal from Adult Swim was reported by THR, which received an official statement confirming the news courtesy of Mairie Moore, Adult Swim's senior vice president of communications. The official Rick and Morty Twitter account laid out more details on what fans can expect and how this will impact Season 7:

Rick and Morty could go the same route as Squidbillies, though there are notable imitators online who sound very similar to Roiland's portrayal. TikTok's Sean Kelly has built a large following solely because of his imitation of Morty; could he be someone that Adult Swim might consider for the role when the time comes? 

At the same time, Rick and Morty is a science-fiction series that leans into weirdness whenever possible. If Rick Sanchez can turn himself into a pickle, he can also permanently change his and Morty's voices without the show needing to jump the shark to explain too much. In my mind, Rick and Morty is one of the most creative shows on television, so one would think its writers shouldn't struggle too much to find a solution. 

It is unclear at this time how this news might impact Justin Roiland's status with other animated shows that he is a part of. Roiland is a co-creator and voice actor on the Hulu series Solar Opposites and an executive producer on the recently launched Koala Man, also available with a Hulu subscription.

NBC News reported that the charges came from a criminal complaint filed in May of 2020 regarding an incident that reportedly occurred around January 19 of 2020, involving a woman (identified only as Jane Doe) who Roiland was dating at the time. 

Court documents revealed that Justin Roiland was charged in May 2020. The voice actor was later arrested then released on a $50,000 bond in August, and pled not guilty to both charges at an arraignment in October of 2020. A protective order is in place against Roiland and will not expire until October 2023. There have been dozens of court hearings since, but no official trial date as of yet. 

Details related to the incident in question are few and far between, thanks in part to a protective order. Police body cam footage, investigation and medical reports, and details of the case, in general, are all currently withheld from the public. One factor gathered from this report is that there is reportedly a plea offer on the table for Justin Roiland, though the details of what it entails are not specified. Should Roiland accept a plea offer, it's likely a trial will not happen. 

The news arrives at a time when Justin Roiland is a hot topic in pop culture. Rick and Morty completed Season 6 in December, Koala Man is currently streaming for those with a Hulu subscription, and High on Life, a game from Roiland's video game studio Squanch Games, is one of the top-played games on Xbox Game Pass. It remains to be seen if this incident may impact Roiland's relationships with various projects. 

Justin Roiland isn't just a driving creative force behind the aforementioned projects, but also is a voice actor for major characters. Most notably, he is the voice of both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, arguably two of the most popular and influential characters in animation currently. It doesn't appear that these charges have impacted his role in the Adult Swim series so far, but the increased publicity could cause repercussions as more of the public becomes aware. 

This is the latest publicly known about Justin Roiland's domestic violence charges, though it's likely that more details will come as a trial commences or a plea deal is reached. When it comes to delivering memorable dialogue and wacky, fudged-up situations, few shows on TV are on the same level as Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, which is nearing the start of its latest and potentially greatest season yet. But even if fans around the globe have been happy to celebrate the animated hit’s return with gags and moments from the show’s past, co-creator Justin Roiland and the other writers are not so fond of making inside jokes and references that lean into Rick and Morty’s own history. And in explaining the reasoning behind that approach, Roiland took a not-so-subtle swipe at former ratings monster The Big Bang Theory. 

Both Rick and Morty and The Big Bang Theory are under the Warner Bros. Television Distribution banner, but that didn’t stop Justin Roiland from using the Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik-starring comedy as an example of what he’s trying to avoid with the sci-fi animated series. Here’s how he put it, according to ComicBook.com:

Considering the history of animation as a whole, in regards to canonical storytelling making up such a small percentage, it’s understandable why Justin Roiland and others behind the scenes would understand that not every Rick and Morty viewer is going to have religiously pored over every episode in its entirety. As such, a random audience member who pops in for a Season 6 installment isn’t going to be wowed if the ep is stacked from end to end with inside jokes that only longtime viewers would find value in. The same technically hold true for sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory that have hundreds of episodes, but live-action network series obviously have a different rulebook to follow.

Which isn’t to say that Rick and Morty avoids connective storytelling entirely, of course, or else Evil Morty’s return in the Season 5 finale wouldn’t have meant nearly as much to everyone who’d been theorizing about it. As such, Justin Roiland doesn’t want to rely on catchphrases that pay homage to moments that newer viewers have no context for, and thus no Bazinga moments. To be sure, there absolutely are jokes that fit under that umbrella, and Roiland himself recently said that the show will lean more into canonical storytelling in the new season. But such elements aren’t ever meant to be the crux or entirety of the narrative or humor.

Justin Roiland himself spoke to one of Rick and Morty’s most iconic episodes as an example of a self-perpetuating allusion, saying:

Now, would it still be funny if a Season 6 episode featured every character walking around saying, “I’m Pickle [Name],” even if they aren’t also hybrid pickle/human creatures with rat-bone exoskeletons? Yeah, probably, since Rick and Morty’s voice cast can make any line worthy of laughter. But Roiland & Co. would rather craft stories that can stand on their own sans tiny bones, even if Pickle Rick does pop up every so often.

Considering The Big Bang Theory is one of the most successful sitcoms of the modern era — as well as one of the more hated ones — there’s certainly value in trying to ape its formula. But that’s for the world of multicamera sitcoms, and not the worlds of animated multiverses. But I would admittedly love to see what a Rick and Morty episode looked like that was written by Chuck Lorre.

Having already been confirmed years ago as part of its mega-renewal deal at Adult Swim, Rick and Morty Season 6 is just over a month away from making its highly anticipated debut. Thankfully, the hiatus between seasons hasn’t been nearly as torturous as those of past years have been, and it’ll actually be the shortest gap yet between one finale and the following premiere. (364 days, to be exact.) As if that wasn’t already exciting enough, co-creator Justin Roiland offered up a quick tease for the new episodes that will likely have one large section of the fanbase happier than pig aliens in pig-alien shit. 

Speaking with IGN as tied to San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Justin Roiland reflected on Season 5 not being ideal in his mind, in that its production was marred by the 2019 death of his close friend and Emmy-winning producer J. Michael Mendel, whose fifth win came posthumously for Season 4’s excellent “The Vat of Acid Episode.” But rather than wading through more mournful territories, Roiland tapped into a more upbeat vibe and shared some high praise for Season 6, saying: 

I think we all know what “the rhythm of Rick and Morty” truly is — Snake Jazz, of course — but that’s probably not what Justin Roiland was referring to. Although if it IS what he meant, I’ll be that much happier. 

All forms of Snake Planet entertainment aside, Justin Roiland tapped into what may or may not be a controversial confirmation for Rick and Morty fans, since there are differing schools of thought on how canonical and serialized the show’s highly complicated sci-fi plotting should be. Some would rather the show lean into the weekly reset format that stalwarts like The Simpsons and Family Guy have always utilized, not to mention thousands of other animated TV projects over the years. But then there are many others who live for Rick and Morty’s fairly dense storytelling set-ups, connections, callbacks and reveals, particularly when it comes to Rick’s past and the whereabouts of Evil Morty. 

To that end, an episode like Season 5’s bonkers finale finally almost definitely wouldn’t exist without there being a general dedication amongst the writers to expand these characters’ stories and lives in ways that provide overarching and consistent meaning and relevance for viewers. That said, Justin Roiland, Dan Harmon and the rest of the writing staff have already shown fans just how dark and dreary Rick and Morty canon can be by way of Mr. Poopybutthole’s sporadic appearances, so I guess we can all be careful what we wish for. But for everyone wishing for Season 6 to be fucking amazing, get hyped. 

Rick and Morty Season 6 will make its canon-foddering premiere on Adult Swim on Sunday, September 4, at 11:00 p.m. ET. Just when you thought it was safe to go outside without worrying about your head exploding or your face being sliced in half by laser-vision, The Boys is giving Prime Video subscribers more over-the-top chaos to look forward to in the form of a brand-new spinoff fittingly titled Diabolical. This one is completely unrelated from the other spinoff that's currently in development, and it looks like creator Eric Kripke (along with executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg) put this together on the down low, as we won't be waiting very long to see it come to life. Pun intended, probably.

While it's not exactly clear what fans can look forward to seeing when Diabolical takes control of our peepers, the announcement revealed the new shortform animated series will focus on "unseen stories" from within The Boys' sordid fictional universe. Considering we've only had two seasons of actual episodes, and considering the flagship series has only dipped its toes (or whatever body parts) into the larger character pool of the comic book series, Diabolical could give streaming audiences all manner of twisted storytelling. Though probably nothing that feeds too heavily into Jensen Ackles' new Season 3 character Soldier Boy, or any other to-be-revealed characters. 

To make up for the mysteries, though, Prime Video has revealed the all-star team of creators who put the eight Diabolical episodes together, including the aforementioned team of Rogen & Goldberg, as well as the comic's co-creator Garth Ennis. Check out the full list below!

That's a veritable buffet of comedic talent who could (and will) easily make The Boys-verse even more bonkers and loopy. As the co-creator of the yet-to-cross-over Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites, Justin Roiland is destined to co-craft an unforgettable installment alongside Blark and Son's puppet maestro Ben Bayouth. Not to mention SNL and Brooklyn Nine-Nine genius Andy Samberg, who will hopefully bring some of his Lonely Island musicianship to Diabolical. The hilarious Aisha Tyler gets to show off her superfandom with her own episode, which will no doubt rock. The same goes for eps penned by Comedy Central regs Awkwafina and the Glazers. And don't sleep on Invincible and Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance writer Simon Racioppa, either.

We can only hope that at least one of these pays off The Boys' spoofy take on Marvel's What If...?, though it's understandable if rights issues make that harder to pull off. Although Eric Kripke did say in his statement below that rules aren't a thing with this kind of project, so maybe...

Without a premiere date set just yet, it's likely Diabolical will have The Boys fans ranting and raving at some point early in 2022. The universe is once again in balance now that Rick and Morty Season 5 has arrived on Adult Swim in full alt-dimension glory. While we're not going to spoil anything about what did or didn't happen in the season premiere with Rick's newly introduced nemesis or Morty's love interest Jessica, suffice to say it was a highly enjoyable return to Adult Swim's most successful animated original. To promote the long-awaited new season, Rick and Morty partnered with Wendy's once again for a fun new campaign. But according to co-creator Justin Roiland, it can sometimes be a total nightmare trying to craft ways for Rick and Morty to sell other companies' products.

For its Season 5 push, Rick and Morty went so far as to completely redesign one California-based Wendy's location as "Morty's," while also offering two new themed fountain drinks at locations across the country. (Those would be Mello Yello BerryJerryboree and Mello Yello Portal Time Lemon Lime.) Though it seems like it might be fun to come up with ways for the genius grandfather and grandson to hock PS5s and Pringles, Justin Roiland pointed out to Collider that things aren't always so easy.

First of all, let's all take a step back to appreciate the fact that even though Justin Roiland is busy on roughly eleventeen million different creative projects at any given moment, from Solar Opposites' alien comedy to his video games to as-yet-unseen projects - he's still apparently the key creative force behind Rick and Morty's various advertising adventures. It makes enough sense, considering he voices both Rick and Morty, and it'd doubtful that some random ad exec would be able to write either character's dialogue with the same ribald proficiency.

As cool as it would be for Justin Roiland to hand-pick all the companies he'd like for Rick and Morty to advertise, those decisions are above his pay grade and are no doubt made by the big bosses at Adult Swim, Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. Which can sometimes cause headaches for Roiland when trying to balance the truth of the sardonic characters with an earnest attempt to actually promote a product or business. In his words:

For better or worse, Justin Roiland decided not to dig deeper into which companies were the biggest nightmares to work with, though one can be sure his stories would have been hilarious and awkward. (And it's not like Rick and Morty commercials have been utilized by so many companies that assumptions can't be made, but I digress.) Regardless of who the biggest nightmares are - i.e. everyone but Sarah Chalke's Summer - fans can be assured that the Adult Swim hit will always keep its often immoral ideals in the crosshairs while pushing Wendy's hamburgers and Pringles, at least as long as Roiland is doing the copywriting. Solar Opposites Season 2 is out on Hulu, and it's about as wild as the show has ever been. The show features lots of over-the-top gags, a fair bit of raunch, and plenty of shots at its home streaming service along the way. In fact, there are so many shots taken at Hulu one could interpret Season 2's jabs as co-creators Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan stirring the pot.

I had to know what the deal was with all the Hulu jokes and learned that couldn't be further from the truth. Mike McMahan talked about Hulu ahead of Solar Opposites Season 2 and his uncertainty of how the show could change after Disney acquired the streamer:

The good news for Solar Opposites fans is, despite its family-friendly image, Disney hasn't stepped in and told the creators they couldn't do certain jokes or take jabs at Hulu. That's definitely an understandable fear given the aforementioned image Disney has worked hard for decades to create. One can't necessarily do a show where aliens constantly talk about the fact they don't have genitalia if it's supposed to maintain a family-oriented attitude.

So because Hulu is fine with all the jabs, Solar Opposites only continues to pepper them in. Justin Roiland talked about the references and also complimented the people at Hulu for being good sports. Said the the co-creator,

So for anyone who has watched Season 2 of Solar Opposites and thought Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan tried to piss off Hulu, that's not the case. Obviously, Hulu was happy enough to already renew the series for Season 3, and a Christmas special will arrive later in the year that's, by both creators' accounts, really good. I'm assuming there will be more jokes about Hulu included in there, provided no hearts and minds at the streamer have soured on any of the jokes made in Season 2.

Check out Solar Opposites Season 1 and 2 on Hulu. It's absolutely one of my favorite things I've watched in 2021 so far, so I highly recommend it to anyone who likes animated comedy or needs a good laugh as of late. After that, be sure to read up on another upcoming project from Justin Roiland that should make fans laugh.

Solar Opposites Season 2 is out on Hulu, and with its arrival came another exciting announcement for fans of the series. The Season 2 finale revealed a Christmas special in the works, and apparently, it contains a moment so hilarious that co-creator Justin Roiland compared it to one of the greatest works on Rick and Morty.

I got a chance to speak to Justin Roiland and co-creator Mike McMahan ahead of Season 2 and confirmed that yes, the upcoming Christmas special teased at the end of the season is real. I also learned that both Roiland and McMahan are incredibly excited to show this special to the world, to the point that Roiland hyped he had a moment in the studio that hadn't happened since he worked on the Emmy-winning Rick and Morty episode "Pickle Rick."

I'll let readers decide for themselves, but if Justin Roiland had to read something so hilarious he couldn't get through it, I personally have to think it's pretty damn hilarious. He and Mike McMahon are responsible for some of the most entertaining animated television of the past five years, Solar Opposites Season 2 being included on that. The sophomore season of the series was so good that it's hard to imagine the upcoming Christmas special won't deliver the same laughs.

Mike McMahan (who is also the creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks) also hyped up the Christmas special considerably and indicated that Solar Opposites fans should buckle up come the holiday season. Though the special isn't finished yet, McMahan has an idea of a couple of ways it could be received.

No release date has been announced for the Solar Opposites holiday special yet, but I would assume it will arrive around or before the holiday season. As for what comes after, the series is already renewed for Season 3, which means more adventures with the family and another chance that Earth may be successfully terraformed by them.

Solar Opposites Season 2 is currently available to binge on Hulu. It's certainly worth a watch for any Rick and Morty fan looking for something to count down the days until new episodes, or just anyone looking for another quality comedy series.

Mike McMahan and Justin Roiland are collectively and separately responsible for some of the best animated shows currently on television. The two have worked together on Roiland and Dan Harmon's Rick and Morty, they co-created Solar Opposites together, and McMahan is the creator of Paramount+'s Star Trek: Lower Decks. All the shows are great on their own, and it's easy for fans to imagine what it would be like if all these projects' characters crossed paths in some way.

As Solar Opposites Season 2 gears up for its run on Hulu, CinemaBlend had the pleasure of speaking with co-creators Mike McMahan and Justin Roiland about all the sci-fi zaniness. I had to ask for their thoughts on one question that's been gnawing at the underside of my brain since Star Trek: Lower Deck's premiere: are there Shlorpians in the Star Trek universe, and is there a chance that these currently disparate universes could ever come together in such a way?

So officially, there has been no evidence of Shlorpians in Star Trek: Lower Decks to date, and it was later clarified that there are currently zero plans to cross the Paramount+ animated spinoff with Solar Opposites. With that being said, Mike McMahan did share he'd love to reach a point where Shlorpians can appear, though obviously, there are problems about how the creatures would comply with the rules of the Federation.

As Solar Opposites fans may know, the planet Shlorp was destroyed long before Star Trek: Lower Decks' timeline began. However, the species dispersed throughout the galaxy via escape pods and were all given pupas that, in time, would terraform planets so they all could eventually live on once more. If one figures that into Star Trek canon, it would stand to reason that a new version of planet Shlorp could feasibly exist somewhere in the Trek-verse, though that's obviously just speculative (and hopeful) on my part.

Justin Roiland is all in on the idea, though it would likely have to be something more small-scale like a blurry background Shlorpian rather than something more obtuse. Both creators have spoken in the past about the licensing issues that bar shows like Star Trek: Lower Decks, Solar Opposites, and Rick and Morty from officially coming together as one big shared universe, regardless of the carryover within the creative minds involved. With a giant brand owning each respective show, perhaps the best fans can hope for is an artist casually sneaking in a reference under executives' noses.

Solar Opposites Season 2 premieres on Hulu Friday, March 26. For those who have yet to check the series out yet, be sure to read up on a past article on some of the things the Hulu series did better than Rick and Morty so far.

It's almost hard to remember a time in the distant, pre-2013 past before Justin Roiland began his gradual ascent of Animation Mountain, but thankfully there's no point in doing that. Not where there are all these Justin Roiland animated shows to watch! The co-creator of Adult Swim's mainstream fave Rick and Morty and Hulu's Solar Opposites is bringing another off-kilter comedy to streaming audiences in the form of Koala Man.

With Solar Opposites on the cusp of delivering a second season of Earth-conquering mayhem in the very near future, Justin Roiland is building upon his relationship with Hulu with the Koala Man series order. According to Deadline, the new comedy will center on the male head of a family whose doubles as the titular vigilante in a not-exactly-secretive way. But what he lacks in stealthy mysteriousness, he makes up for in crimefighting passion and his commitment to restoring order in his community. All while wearing jean shorts, a cape, and a mask that makes the top half of his head look like a koala. I mean, it worked for Batman...well, except for the shorts part.

Justin Roiland will serve as an executive producer on Koala Man, so while he won't be the main creative thrust behind the scenes, his involvement probably has a lot to do with the project finding a home. Koala Man is the creation of Australian animator Michael Cusack, who will also star in the lead role. He will be penning the series along with showrunners Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, the co-writers of the unexpectedly fun Pokémon: Detective Pikachu and the upcoming Addams Family animated sequel. They were also writers on One Day at a Time, The Tick and 1600 Penn, to name a few. The range of comedy among those projects is rather wide and bordering-on-weird, so I'm expecting Koala Man to be quite an interesting "superhero" story, as it were.

Sharing a studio with Solar Opposites in 20th Television Animation, Koala Man is getting an eight-episode first season, which should be enough time for Justin Roiland & Co. to hook audiences with its characters without overdoing it, and while leaving everyone hungry for more. (Hungry for more eucalyptus leaves, amirite?)

While the world has yet to witness any straightforward crossover connections between Solar Opposites and Rick and Morty, it's certainly possible that Koala Man and Solar Opposites could bring their characters together at some point down the line. I mean, I dunno if they'd even want to, but it'd probably be easier to do that with both shows being Hulu originals.

Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland received some devastating news about his dog in August, but fortunately, it appears things are looking up. After the discovery of a tumor inside of his pet dog's nose, Roiland posted a much more positive update on the health of his dog, Jerry, who has inspired many aspects of the show.

Jerry, who inspired the name of the Smith family patriarch, had a rough go of things after his diagnosis but is now on the mend. Check out the picture Justin Roiland posted from after Jerry's treatment and follow up, then continue on for more on his persevering pooch.

As mentioned, Justin Roiland first revealed the issue with his dog Jerry back in August and vowed to do everything in his power to treat his canine companion and ensure he was comfortable. As described above, the road to recovery for Jerry was not easy, but thankfully the commitment by Roiland has successfully nursed his dog back to health. Jerry is looking good in the second picture and may be around to inspire many more jokes and characters on Rick and Morty.

If it wasn't apparent by this point, Jerry wasn't just the inspiration for the name of Rick and Morty's Jerry. His likeness was also used to create the character Snuffles/Snowball, who was the focal point in the episode "Lawnmower Dog." Snuffles vows revenge for the ways he was mistreated and takes out most of his aggression on Jerry. This included almost getting the family patriarch "fixed," but Morty's intervention saved Jerry from what may have been one of his worst injuries on the show.

It's worth mentioning that, because he left for another dimension prior to Rick and Morty destroying their original world, Snuffles/Snowball may still appear as a central character in a future episode of the Adult Swim series. Rick and Morty has danced around the issue as to whether or not the series would continue to be as serialized as it was before the massive renewal from Adult Swim, and while certain characters have returned in recent episodes, there's a lot more that have been added. Will Snuffles/Snowball return to the franchise with another episode, and will he successfully manage to reclaim his testicles? I'm optimistic, given the advanced technology on Dog World, though sometimes even science has its limitations.

In either case, we here at CinemaBlend couldn't be happier that Justin Roiland's dog is on the mend. Ever since Solar Opposites first debuted on Hulu, there have been questions on how the show would tie in with Rick and Morty. The characters are aliens, Rick and Morty travel through several worlds and dimensions, and the show is co-created by two major players behind Rick and Morty's success, Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan. A crossover sounds like it would be a simple thing to get done, but as both men pointed out, that's far from the case.

The duo spoke about the odds of a crossover during Comic-Con@Home, and suffice to say it's a long shot if this crossover ever happens. Before Rick and Morty fans begin the theories of some falling out between Dan Harmon and the two men, Justin Roiland said that the real hangup is something that's more or less out of both of their control:

For a Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites crossover to happen, the minds at AT&T and Disney would have to reach some sort of agreement to share the IPs. Neither Justin Roiland nor Mike McMahan knew the odds of it happening, but they did know it would be the decision of some people above them with more say in the matter.

As far as what Solar Opposites would ever do if it crossed over with Rick and Morty, Mike McMahan did have a rather hilarious pitch. The idea would pit the major characters of both shows together, though maybe not in the way fans would expect.

It's a funny idea, but perhaps more of a jokey acknowledgment that a Rick and Morty crossover isn't on the way for Solar Opposites anytime soon. Either that or they do have a real idea they're playing close to the chest for that day should it ever come. It certainly will be much more of a challenge considering the crossover would require collaborations between two entirely separate corporate entities, but it's not like those types of crossovers are completely unheard of. They're certainly a rarer form of crossover, so maybe fans shouldn't hold their breath on this one happening.

For Hulu's Solar Opposites, creators Justin Roiland and Mick McMahan stuck with the sci-fi comedy genre that they'd honed so well with Rick and Morty, but with completely different focuses in mind. On one hand, the show is about Earthbound aliens finding their atypical footing among humanity. And on the other hand, there's The Wall (which itself is filled with a ton of tiny hands). Anyone who watched the entirety of Season 1 is likely aware that The Wall is the most unexpectedly magical thing about the show, and Hulu wants more people to know about it.

The initial marketing for Solar Opposites kept The Wall hidden from audiences, as not to clue early viewers in on the increasingly intriguing story-within-a-story. But the exclusive video below is a full-on trailer for The Wall's awesomeness. Join the rebellion by pressing play, but don't let The Duke catch you.

I can't lie, seeing an official trailer dedicated to The Wall makes me want to go back and watch the cleverly titled seventh episode ("Terry and Korvo Steal a Bear") all over again. As shown in the trailer, the situation inside The Wall is akin to a post-apocalyptic Lord of the Flies on a grander scale, setting up a war of opposing factions, with a slew of over-sized (to them) household items serving as props and decorations. It's like Honey I Shrunk the Kids exponentially expanding to its logical conclusion, which would obviously include aliens, explosions, and a model of Jerry's apartment in Seinfeld.

Could the ball seen below actually be the very baseball that was so integral in making Wayne Szalinski's shrinking machine a success? (In a word: no.)

Since The Wall was initially put together as a way for the alien Yumyulack to witness and study human behavior, the Twitter page will feature Yumyulack laying out the many keen and absurd observations that he makes while viewing Wall inhabitants. The data won't always make sense, of course, since Yumyulack's science skills aren't top-level. But that's not as much of a concern if he's successful with his true goal of finding ways to be more popular at school.

Thankfully, Solar Opposites fans don't have to worry about The Wall's future, since the show already has Season 2 on the way, with Season 3 being a possibility as well. How in the world will Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan top everything that happened with The Wall so far? Will Yumyulack abduct enough people to start spreading The Wall's containers out across the ceiling and floor at any point? Will he end up shrinking every human being in the world by the end of the show? I would be so into that.

For several years now, Justin Roiland has been of the most popular TV animations actors on the planet, based largely (but not completely) on being the voice of both the titular characters in Adult Swim's Rick and Morty. His improvisational style and manic drive are two of his biggest strengths, which has also helped boost his career outside of Rick and Morty-dom. Not all of it has been a painless dream, though, with Roiland recently revealing one role that completely wrecked his voice after the first time he did it.

Before Rick and Morty shook up the late-night animation game, Justin Roiland held roles on two of the most beloved animated series of the past 20 years, Adventure Time and Gravity Falls. While talking about his various acting gigs with GQ, he revealed that taking on the role of Adventure Time's batty Earl of Lemongrab was quite detrimental to his voice at the time. Mentioning that the show's creator Pendleton Ward had been on an episode of his Grandma's Virginity Podcast, Roiland explained:

Anyone who is familiar with the Earl of Lemongrab knows exactly what Justin Roiland is talking about. The character's voice is high-pitched and strained, to the point where it sometimes sounds as if Roiland's vocal cords would be splintering with each word. It doesn't help, of course, that Earl of Lemongrab's rabid and unstable personality only causes his voice to get more stretched out and fractured as he gets upset.

Justin Roiland had to take some healthful advice from Tom Kenny, who voice Adventure Time's Ice King (as well as SpongeBob SquarePants himself). In Roiland's words:

As the creation of one Princess Bubblegum, Earl of Lemongrab first showed up on Adventure Time in the Season 3 episode "Too Young," riding his Lemon Camel into the Candy Kingdom as its ruler, only to get fired (ya butt) from the position after being pranked. That debut performance was definitely a memorable one, and set up more than a dozen appearances on Adventure Time (sometimes as cloned versions). But you can bet that he came up with better ways to voice Lemongrab, which may or may not have involved running around and ripping his pants off. (It did not.)

While certain characters on Rick and Morty have a passing resemblance to the way Earl of Lemongrab sounds on Adventure Time, Justin Roiland likely knew never to push himself quite that hard when making the Adult Swim comedy.

Rick and Morty is all done with Season 4 now, following a Star Wars-filled season finale, with Season 5 set to possibly debut in 2020. Meanwhile, Adventure Time wrapped up its run on Cartoon Network back in 2018, with all ten seasons now available to stream on HBO Max. What's more, the show will be returning with four hour-long specials on HBO Max, which will be released under the title Adventure Time: Distant Lands.

While there are plenty of television shows out there that struggle to find an audience, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland’s Rick And Morty operates with one of the most engaged fanbases around. Not only do people clearly love the show (and showcase that love online frequently), but they also dig deep into it and formulate all kinds of strange theories about both past episodes and where things are going in the future. It’s a fun group to be a part of if you really love the Adult Swim series – but if you’re hoping that the show’s creators are constantly digging through the material and reading fan pieces, we have some disappointing news: they’re not. On the plus side, however, they have some very good reasons.

With Rick and Morty Season 4 having just ended, I recently thought to look back at a two-on-one interview I did with Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland prior to the main run of Season 3 episodes, and one of the interesting subjects covered in conversation was about their relationship with fans and their engagement with fan engagement. I asked the duo about their awareness of chatter and audience theorizing, and they explained why it is that they’ve learned to keep away. Said Roiland,

Continuing, and being as respectful to the Rick and Morty fans as possible, Justin Roiland explained that part of the detachment from fan theories and chatter comes simply from his closeness to the material. In the same way that a farmer may not want to peruse a bunch of corn recipes after spending an entire day harvesting, the show co-creator doesn’t ever find himself feeling super excited to read message boards and social media after having spent his days burning out his brain coming up with material in the writer’s room and recording booth. He explained,

For Dan Harmon, the case of Rick and Morty is an interesting one, as he has a bit of experience when it comes to actively discussing his work with a show’s fanbase. When his first network series, Community, was airing on NBC, Harmon was regularly interacting with audiences and even incorporated certain encounters into various episodes (a prime example being Chevy Chase's Pierce’s use of the fake expression “Streets ahead” in Season 1, which originated from a fan mocking Harmon online using the non-existent phrase).

As Harmon explained, part of the reason he felt compelled to be a part of that conversation was because he felt that being a part of it helped him psychologically deal with the fact that it existed and wasn’t something within his control:

To further express his view on the subject, Dan Harmon used what is a frequent metaphor among Hollywood writers by comparing his work to a flesh-and-blood baby that a parent raises and puts out into the world. As a good parent, he wants to be sure that his child is being treated well and respectfully – but the nature of the world is that it’s never going to provide the exact treatment you expect, and it’s a hard thing to see something innocent exposed to cruel nature. Said Harmon,

It’s a reasonable perspective. No piece of art is ever going to be universally beloved, and while Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have a great deal of pride in what they’ve created for Rick and Morty, there is a point where it stops belonging to them and starts belongs to the fans, and that’s not always an easy transition. They’ve learned that the smarter move is to simply step away.

What’s more, they’re not even entirely convinced that Rick and Morty fans actually want to know that they are checking in on fan theories and their analysis of the show. Harmon explained that he feels as though audiences should be able to express their thoughts about and appreciation for the show without the knowledge that the showrunners are looming and judging takes on their creation. Said Harmon

As noted earlier, Rick and Morty recently completed its run of Season 4, and now the wait has begun for Season 5. Cable subscribers can watch the most recent episodes for a limited time on the Adult Swim website, or purchase them online and previous seasons are available digitally, on both Blu-ray and DVD, and on HBO Max and Hulu.

As sad a realization as it is to consider, Rick and Morty Season 4 is almost complete, even though it seems like the long wait following Season 3 never really ended yet. Part of that feeling is tied to the fact that Season 4 was split in half, with a months-long hiatus separating the first five episodes from the bonkers second half of the season. At this point there's no telling when Season 5 will debut, but co-creator Justin Roiland has a bizarre idea for how to schedule Rick and Morty episodes in order to minimize giant gaps between episodes.

Justin Roiland is more than aware that tons of Rick and Morty fans imbibe on the show through streaming methods, and that not everyone is attuned to showing up for live airings on Sunday nights. However, his Season 5 idea is partially a way to inspire more people to get invested in communal viewing. Here's how he put it to SlashFilm:

How interesting and bizarre would it be if Adult Swim set up a specific date each month for a new Rick and Morty episode to debut? The idea obviously has some potentially negative attributes going for it, with the biggest one being that fans would no longer get to watch new Rick and Morty eps on a weekly basis. (At least outside of personal binges.) A lot of people depend on Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon's twisted points-of-view to keep them laughing from Sunday nights into Monday mornings, so having to wait three weeks between each episode might get kind of frustrating.

That said, Justin Roiland does make decent points about why the one-episode-a-month plan is a good idea. That rollout would keep Rick and Morty alive and well in everyone's minds throughout the entire year, and would feasibly make life a little easier on the creative and animation teams, and might allow for more topical references to come up. The writers wouldn't necessarily need to pump out excess ideas all in one swoop, and the anticipation between installments could very well drive more viewers to show up on Sunday nights.

Just think, that idea could potentially allow Rick and Morty to transcend the idea of seasonal releases by having a continuous stream of episodes flowing from year to year. Adult Swim's massive renewal order, which was meant to lessen wait times for Rick and Morty's fans, only dictated how many new episodes were confirmed, but without any arbitrary seasonal separations.

Following Season 4, Rick and Morty is still on the hook for 60 more episodes, which would equal out to five full years of monthly installments, as opposed to six more years of staggered half-season releases. Which route sounds better to everyone else? (Let us know in the poll below!)

Perhaps if Rick and Morty ever did shift to releasing episodes once a month, Adult Swim might be able to regularly give fans Blu-ray-worthy extras via YouTube and social media. By that, I mean more interviews with the creative team where we learn interesting facts about the gross-looking Plumbus, as well as more deleted and/or extended scenes, and possibly even more (presumably bloody) short-form videos that don't tie in with any particular episodes.

For example, check out the scene below, which I'd assume was cut from the recent mind-bending episode, "A Vat of Acid," which featured one of Rick and Morty's most meta pop culture references ever.

After four no-longer-canonical seasons, Rick and Morty has given fans a massive variety of perceptibly disturbing jokes and visuals that will forever remain lodged in our brains. One of those images, of course, is the mighty Plumbus, arguably the most useful tool in the universe. I'm sure everyone already knows everything the Plumbus can do, so we won't get into that. Instead, let's take a few moments to talk about why this very common household object looks as gross as it does.

Within Rick and Morty itself, the Plumbus' icky aesthetic doesn't get questioned, but TV audiences have often questioned why the device looks the way it does. Beyond whatever answers are available to those who visit Plumbubo Prime 51b to see the Plumbuses being made in person, Rick and Morty's lead prop designer Brent Noll and storyboard artist Dan O'Connor addressed the origin of the Plumbus' design, which was revealed to be a weird mix between a musical instrument, a sci-fi movie reference, and private parts. In their words:

So in case anyone out there ever felt like a weirdo for grabbing a Plumbus and trying to play "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" on it, now there's at least a reason, even though you are still a weirdo for that.

Of course, it's not the banjo shape that gives the Plumbus its visual non-appeal. That distinction definitely belongs in part to the hairy element, and its existence gets even more disturbing now that I know it was designed based on Jeff Goldblum's hairy ass body in David Cronenberg's The Fly, which is widely considered one of the most disgusting body horror movies out there. I definitely don't want to think about the Plumbus being covered in sticky fly goo.

The Plumbus also earns its share of "ewwwww" points by the rest of the device being influenced by the shapes and wibbly-wobbly nature of genitalia. And is it really a surprise that naughty bits influenced the design of such a universal household object? Remote controls are phallic, candles are phallic, bedposts are phallic, and so on. Naturally, something as universally useful as the Plumbus is going to be comparable to someone's junk.

As it turns out, the prop designers and animators tend to be guided by the potentially obsessive reactions from co-creator Justin Roiland, who is pretty particular about what makes it to the screen in Rick and Morty. In his words:

I can't imagine Justin Roiland would think of the Plumbus as only a toy, so he may have kept his notes a little light when it came to designing to the pink creature. It does kind of look like a paddle-ball, but I'm not exactly sure which part one would hold to make the other partr bounce. Oh yeah, the gross part.

For the Hulu animated comedy Solar Opposites, creators Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan distanced themselves from their other super-popular animated series, Rick and Morty, with a story about an alien family, their highly dangerous "pet," and an entire mini-ecosystem known as The Wall. Solar Opposites features tons of surreal and absurd humor throughout Season 1's eight episodes, and two particularly strange pop culture gags include an appearance from a near-perfect replica of Jerry's apartment in Seinfeld, as well as appearances from very imperfect replicas of Mickey Mouse, Paddington, Donald Duck and more.

CinemaBlend spoke with both Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan about the sci-fi excellence of Solar Opposites, and I had to ask about both the Seinfeld nod and the bizarre Disney shout-outs. Read on for their answers!

Where Solar Opposites' Seinfeld Reference Came From

Episode 7, which features the misdirect title of "Terry and Korvo Steal a Bear," takes place entirely within the micro-universe of The Wall, easily making it the standout of the season. (Check out what Roiland and McMahan told us about that episode.) As viewers can probably remember, one moment early on introduces the idea that those rebelling against The Duke formed their headquarters within a replica of Jerry's apartment in Seinfeld. Not only did that scene feature a winking knock on the iconic sitcom's polarizing finale, but we even later got to see a psuedo-Kramer join the fun (which seemingly proved that the replica had a working refrigerator).

Here's what Justin Roiland told me when I asked what the idea was being adding the recognizable Seinfeld setting to the dystopian Wall setting.

Just in case anyone thought that creative people always get their ideas from complicated and extremely deep places in the mind, sometimes it all comes down to what's pop culture memorabilia on a nearby shelf. It definitely helps if the thing that's being written also happens to contain a slew of miniaturized hubs in need of tiny furniture.

For Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan, just about anything can be flipped on its comedic edge, be it the murderous intoxication of pubescent pheromones (See Episode 4, discussed below) or one of television's most recognizable living rooms. Here's what else the Solar Opposites bosses had to say about the Seinfeld bit.

To recap: the replica's scale being slightly off is a subtle joke based on a real-world observation told within a meta pop culture reference that is itself within a genre-reversing bottle episode of a relatively broad sci-fi comedy. And it all started with Justin Roiland spending a lot of money on a tiny room. That's just how it goes with a show like Solar Opposites.

Why Solar Opposites Referenced Mickey Mouse And Other Cartoons

Before the Seinfeld apartment made its glorious appearance, Solar Opposites featured a sub-plot in Episode 4, "The Booster Manifold," that centered on the Pupa's adventure outside the house during the family's Goobler conundrum. After visits to the dump and a sketchy ship, the Pupa found itself up for bidding as part of a "rare collector's academy" auction selling off real animals dressed as famed fictional characters such as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, some of the 101 Dalmatians crew, Paddington and more.

When I asked about the Pupa being part of this bizarre plot point, which felt like a weird mix of Amazon knockoffs and Disney worship, here's what Mike McMahan told me:

I can't tell you why it's so damned funny that the adorable Paddington lookalike appears to be emotionally invested in having the Pupa around for the rest of that train ride and beyond, but it definitely earned a laugh from yours truly. As did Korvo's rage fit about blue ice cubes just before excreting that red Goobler, as well as the violent massacre later on. Man, I loved these two episodes, not to mention every other one.

It's a magical time of year for fans of sci-fi comedy, with the return of Rick and Morty Season 4 lining up with the release of Hulu's Solar Opposites, which just so happens to come from R&M's Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan. On the surface, Solar Opposites takes a hilariously offbeat look at an alien family growing accustomed to an Earthly existence in suburbia, but the show's true genius lies in its world-within-a-world dubbed The Wall, in which society is rebuilt by a growing population of miniaturized rude people.

The Wall is first introduced in Solar Opposites' premiere within the bedroom of the younger aliens Jesse and Yumyulack, with the latter being its architect and supplier of shrunken residents. The ever-evolving side-plot hit an unexpected apex in Episode 7, "Terry and Korvo Steal a Bear," with the entire runtime dedicated to a reference-filled uprising inside The Wall. It will easily go down as one of my favorite TV experiences in 2020, so I was definitely excited to talk to Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan about how The Wall idea came together. Here's how Roiland started things off:

While it wasn't immediately clear just how well thought-out everything Wall-related would be, early episodes of Solar Opposites did offer lots of intriguing morsels of what life was like inside The Wall's myriad compartments. In particular, I loved seeing all the ways the characters repurposed trash and enlarged household items for primitive goods and weaponry. By the time Episode 7 came around, the humans' story was vast enough that it inarguably deserved to be meticulously explored through Tim/Lindsey leading the Resistance against The Duke.

Considering Rick and Morty is the kind of show whose dense plotting inspires lengthy theorizing and hypothesizing, it's only fitting that Justin Roiland gave Solar Opposites its own obsession-fueled story elements, albeit with completely different style and substance. Of course, both Roiland and McMahan knew The Wall was a lofty concept that wouldn't be the easiest sell. Below, Roiland talked about putting the pieces in place, and how lucky they were to land at Hulu.

To Justin Roiland's point, one of the only traditional TV networks that might be into Solar Opposites' dual storylines would be Adult Swim, as guided by Roiland's successes with Rick and Morty. Thankfully, the duo landed at a streaming service that didn't balk at such an audacious plan for an animated comedy, though Mike McMahan notes that there was the slightest bit of hesitance whenever he and Roiland pitched their grand scheme.

Perhaps if the episode had been anything less than spectacular, Hulu might have delivered some constructive criticism from on high. But Solar Opposites reached transcendence with Episode 7, and it will hopefully pave the way for more shows (either animated or live-action) to take more storytelling risks.

How The Wall Was Inspired By The Wire And Others

Due to its creators' influences, Solar Opposites obviously shares some creative ground with Rick and Morty, but everything within The Wall truly felt like a mutually exclusive universe. What viewers might not have expected to learn is that the overall idea of parallel storylines was directly influenced by HBO's The Wire. Here's what Mike McMahan told me:

After hearing that, I can now only imagine that Michael K. Williams will get a cameo in Season 2 as The Wall's version of The Wire's Omar Little. Fingers so crossed.

The Wire might not have been the most obvious inspiration, but Solar Opposites did feature lots of more easily recognizable references to genre fiction. Below, Mike McMahan talks about some of those influences, including how The Wall's evil tyrant is a nod to the Escape from New York villain The Duke of New York.

I believe Solar Opposite fans would have rioted had the show returned for Season 2 without returning to the story of The Wall's inhabitants. And speaking of Season 2, we need more, Hulu!

The dramatic and sometimes enigmatic musical score was part of what made me first realize that Solar Opposites flipped the script in Episode 7, not to mention those stripped-down opening titles. It's excellent that the creative team didn't have to rely on licensed recordings to give the visuals further depth, as landing that orchestra definitely took everything up a notch.

Warning! The following contains spoilers for the Rick and Morty episode "Never Ricking Morty." Read at your own risk!

Rick and Morty made its triumphant return to television recently, really exploding out of the gate (or train station, as it were) with one of its most ambitious episodes to date. "Never Ricking Morty" found the heroes on a Rick-obsessed train, yet neither Rick or Morty could remember why they were there.

The episode took lots of left turns and made plenty of references to the show's past, but to what end? While it hasn't been explicitly confirmed by the show's creators behind the scenes, this episode made it pretty damned clear that the creative team is largely finished with being beholden to previous episodes' storylines and reveals, so fans shouldn't expect many of them to be revisited in the show's future. Let's dig into the episode, what it meant, and why Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon may have broken canon to give audiences something entirely different moving foward.

What Happened In "Never Ricking Morty"

As previously hinted at, a disguised Rick and Morty were traveling on a train that they didn't remember boarding, and Rick soon discovered thy were on a "anthology story train" that traveled in circles. To escape, the duo had to traverse the speeding vehicle via each of its completely random train cars, all without falling prey to the various storytelling traps.

The two were in constant danger throughout the episode (in which Morty educated fans about "cum gutters") and he and Rick nearly failed in their quest to escape the Story Lord. The narrative-centered villain harvested the duo for their marketability and plot lines, and it appeared the two might be trapped within this new reality forever.

That is, until Rick and Morty prayed to Jesus Christ himself to save them in their darkest hour. The hilarious out-of-character moment physically broke the machine that was controlling them, and Rick and Morty attempted their escape. Only when Rick got to the control console, he realized it was completely fake, and it was then revealed the train was actually a toy that Morty bought for Rick. The duo had a weird meta conversation about merchandising, and then the train's Jesus derailed the toy and it broke.

Yeah, I Watched The Episode, But What Did It Mean?

The train itself is a representation of Dan Harmon's signature story circle he uses in script-writing, which is a modified version of The Hero's Journey. Rick's plan to escape the train meant progressing through each stage of Harmon's creative process, eventually breaking it apart so that they could escape.

I can't say for sure who the Story Lord represents in this adventure, but it might very well be a stand-in for Adult Swim itself. The character is only concerned with keeping the duo marketable, and ensuring they revisit all the characters and plot threads from the show's past in order to keep fans happy. This is part of why Rick and Morty has been successful so far, and in order to keep this train literally rolling, Rick and Morty need to stay on that familiar path. In Adult Swim execs' eyes, now would likely be the worst time for the show to try something different, considering that monumental renewal order.

The scene that brought back all manner of previously established characters for a massive battle looked like straight-up fan fiction, and it's fitting in that regard that Evil Morty was at the head of it. The fandom has run itself ragged coming up with ways for Evil Morty's arc to be resolved ever since he took control of the Citadel of Ricks. I think this scene represents the idealized fan outcome, and the train's derailment at the end is a sign that such a culminating and conclusive resolution will never actually happen.

Then there's the bit at the end, which features an unhinged rant from "real world" Rick that it's all about pimping merch. Rick has always been about making that money, but in this case I think his comments may be an open acknowledgement by the show's creative team that they too are wishing for Rick and Morty to be as successful as possible. With that said, they're perhaps not so consumed by success and fan attention that they're content with adhering to the complicated and chaotic canon that has been set up across 3+ seasons.

But Wait, That Wasn't Even The REAL Rick And Morty, Right?

The Rick and Morty in the train clearly aren't the same Rick and Morty that were hanging out in the living room, which has led some fans to dismiss the entire message as non-canonical. That would be an easier argument to support had Rick and Morty never relayed that message before, but audiences saw the "real" Rick and Morty give a very similar speech in the Season 4 premiere.

In "Edge Of Tomorty," Rick and Morty ran through a large chunk of the premise of "Never Ricking Morty" though one quick conversation at the end. That discussion presumably laid out exactly what the series intends to do going forward, before Summer absolutely ruined everything by being gross.

The overall gist is that Rick and Morty may still hearken back to prior plots and characters, but the creative team is going to do what it wants without being so strictly guided by canon. Keep in mind that Adult Swim's renewal was for 70 episodes, which is a lot for a densely animated show like this. In its first seasons, the more serialized Rick and Morty was seemingly on the cancellation bubble regardless of its perceived success. Perhaps the idea of tying every story element together was more plausible when Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland thought the output would be more limited, but the renewal gives the show a lot more ground to spread its absurdity-embracing wings.

Ultimately, I think this is for the best. Based on the past few seasons of Rick and Morty, the last thing fans should want to do is rain pressure down on Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland to jigsaw-piece together the ridiculous world that they've created. They've earned the ability to write what they enjoy, canonical or otherwise, without having to face fans who populate comment sections with gripes that an episode didn't feature Mr. Poopybutthole in a highly specific way, or didn't give Evil Morty his day of reckoning.

That being said, Roiland should be able to feel even more confident this time about, Solar Opposites his new series coming to Hulu on Friday, May 8.

Co-created by Justin Roiland and Rick and Morty executive producer Mike McMahan, Solar Opposites follows a family of extraterrestrials who escape their planet minutes before its destruction and find refuge on Earth, but are now faced with a culture clash that causes them to rub elbows with their new human neighbors, and each other. So, in other words, it is yet another family drama interspersed with zany hijinks drenched in a passion for the bizarre, as you can see promised in the first teaser trailer below:

A goofy, self-aware, sci-fi family dramedy is also essentially what Rick and Morty is so, while the creators have noted plenty of contrasting elements (which I will get to), Solar Opposites seems to be just what fans are looking for as they wait however long it will take to release the next season. The following are six reasons that further prove that claim. Wubba lubba dub dub!

Solar Opposites Puts Another Mismatched Pairing At The Forefront

As previously mentioned, Rick and Morty soars as both an absurdist sci-fi adventure and a sitcom honoring dysfunctional family values. That is basically what Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan seem to be going for again this time with Solar Opposites, right down to the concept of placing the union of two vastly contrasting personalities as the main leads.

Leading the series’ central family of aliens (also including Mary Mack as Jesse, Sean Giambrone as Yumyulack, and the dangerous Pupa, whose voice actor is currently unknown) is the curmudgeonly Korvo (Justin Roiland) and happy-go-lucky Terry (Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch), whose naive perception of human behavior seems to be all they have in common. Their outfits alone should be able to tell you everything: Korvo continues to dress in his homeland’s traditional attire in protest of his new earthly environment and Terry’s shorts and T-shirt clearly reflects his blissful assimilation into human culture. Whoever’s attitude proves more problematic is to be determined.

Celebrities Slated To Make Guest Appearances

I have always been an admirer of Rick and Morty’s rotation of special guest voice appearances and the roles they choose to cast them in. Keith David is unforgettable as the President, Stephen Colbert is hilarious as Rick-like scientist unwittingly living in the hovercraft’s battery, and SpongeBob Squarepants himself, Tom Kenny, has voiced many memorable characters on the series and is also one of many Rick and Morty veterans and newcomers alike slated to make cameos on Solar Opposites.

The celebrity guests also include Alfred Molina (who once played the Devil on a Rick and Morty episode), former Mad Men star Christina Hendricks (also Rick’s ex, Unity), nerd icon Alan Tudyk, and Sean Giambrone’s mom from The Goldbergs Wendi McLendon-Covey. Those are just a few of the names whose voices we will have the pleasure of hearing in the first season of Solar Opposites.

Promos Have Teased Plenty Of Pop Culture References

The secret to many of Rick and Morty’s most memorable episodes is how they brilliantly play into nostalgia, practically recreating the plots of classic movies and TV shows with a clever enough twist to sustain originality (i.e. a human body made into a public attraction like Jurassic Park or an alien planet with an annual purge of murderous tendencies). Fans could clearly see from the promotional material for Solar Opposites that there is plenty more referential humor in store. I mean, just see for yourself in the series’ longer, more recent trailer below:

I found four pop culture riffs in the first teaser alone, including a “black hole” that bears resemblance to a Stargate to the zombie-fighting weapons the aliens use looking like variations of a lightsaber. The longer, more recent trailer also has send-ups that might require a more eagle-eyed perception, such as a brief glimpse of a particularly Seinfeldian apartment, and some that are more distinct, like Jesse and Yumyulack’s principal referring to their activity as “Outer Limits bullshit.” I think that we can expect even more than just what the promos have teased with Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan involved.

That Good Ol’ Morbid Justin Roiland Humor

Furthermore, as per usual with anything that Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan are involved with, the humor in Solar Opposites is sure to be something you would not find on the back of a Laffy Taffy wrapper. If you are not adept to the “mature” pastiche of Rick and Morty, perhaps you should take another look at the new series’ trailers above for a deeper understanding of what I mean.

You got Jesse and Yumyulack rotting their bully’s brain with soda, Terry and Korvo unwittingly leading a paraplegic to his drowning death with mechanical legs, and more than a few drug references and bloody corpses throughout. On the other hand, Justin Roiland has touched on how one of the biggest differences between Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites is how the family dysfunction is far less severe than that of the Smith clan (mostly at the fault of Rick), ensuring a comparatively lighter tone in that regard. Based on the trailers alone, however, that looks to be the extent of the show’s “lightness.”

Hulu Original = UNCENSORED

Fortunately, Solar Opposites has the benefit to be as dark or raunchy as it wants to be. The creators’ morbidly curious fans have Hulu, the series’ exclusive home, to thank for that.

Excluding the ones who download full episodes of Rick and Morty, viewers who have devoted themselves to following the show on actual television are forced to endure pixelated blocking and bleeped profanity as a consequence of Adult Swim’s standards and practices. Of course, there are no standards and practices for subscription-based streaming service, meaning Solar Opposites possesses the freedom to get schwifty.

Chance For A Rick And Morty Cameo?

Speaking of getting schwifty, it is clear that Solar Opposites, prior to its premiere, has not been shown mercy from comparison to Rick and Morty (this article alone is an essential piece of evidence to that). While I am certain that there is enough within the show (outside of its similar animation style, sci-fi lunacy, and familial themes), I have to wonder, Will there ever be a crossover?

You could make the argument that this series already looks like something the Smith Family might click on while watching inter-dimensional cable and there are few alternate realities that Rick and Morty have yet to explore already so the chances of them crossing paths with Korvo and company do not seem like a stretch, narratively speaking, that is. With the shows existing on disparate platforms makes that crossover less likely, but if they can find a cleverly subtle way to work around it, that might be satisfying enough. I mean, they managed a brief cameo in The Simpsons.

Its success afforded co-creator Justin Roiland and writer/EP Mike McMahan the chance to branch off with another delightfully wacky sci-fi comedy, Hulu's Solar Opposites, which hits the streaming service on Friday, May 8. After seeing the first pair of trailers, fans are likely wondering how the two projects will compare and contrast. That's where we come in.

CinemaBlend spoke with Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan all about the first season of Solar Opposites, which centers on a family of aliens – Korvo, Terry, Jesse and Yumyulack – who land on Earth with a creature that could destroy the entire planet. Here's Roiland talking about how this family unit's show differs from Rick and Morty.

While Justin Roiland's vocal talent is obviously a highlight that Rick and Morty shares with Solar Opposites, his furrow-browed alien Korvo definitely stands apart and isn't merely a shadow of either Rick or Morty. To Roiland's point, no one in Solar Opposites ever hits Rick's chaotic highs or nihilistic lows, which works to the Hulu show's favor, since it isn't beholden to humor's sharpest edges like Adult Swim is. The new comedy can keep its more upbeat tone while still keeping the dialogue and themes strictly adult and heady.

For all the dark and weird moments that transpire in Solar Opposites, much of it lacks the neurotic tug of despair that lurks around all of Rick and Morty's corners. As Justin Roiland put it, the idea was more about keeping things fun.

Rick and Morty fans are pretty lucky that Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan chose to team up on another animated science fiction series, what with the entire entertainment world at their fingertips. And it's largely thanks to how much the two creators absolutely adore the genre. McMahan, as some might remember, is the creator of CBS All Access' upcoming animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks, which will be the first full-on comedy in the Trek franchise. Here, McMahan shares his thoughts on adding to the sci-fi comedy genre.

Justin Roiland then shared that the first time he ever drew any of the Solar Opposites characters, it was on a dry-erase board in his old office. Oddly enough, the illustrations ended being extremely close to what made it to the final product. Which just goes to show that sometimes, one's first instincts are indeed the most fruitful ones.

With Solar Opposites, Mike McMahan wanted to bring the same kind of approach that they took with Rick and Morty, in that there was a pronounced priority in making sure the genre elements remained in the same quality tier as everything else the show delivered.

Sticking with the same kind of absurdity-driven science-fiction that Justin Roiland does so well, Solar Opposites is about a family of four aliens who end up crash-landing on Earth after having escaped the destruction of their own planet. Luckily for them, they crashed into a home that was already ready to move into, which allows them to jump right into all the things that make this country what it is. Such as bullying, addictive drugs, and black holes. Wait, that doesn't sound right.

Solar Opposites features a solid cast, with an even more impressive stable of guest stars set to appear in Season 1. Justin Roiland himself voices Korvo, with The Goldbergs' Sean Giambrone as Yumyulack, and they don't have much respect for humanity and its gluttonous and pollutive ways. Silicon Valley's Thomas Middleditch voices Terry and stand-up comic Mary Mack plays Jesse, and they love humans' entertainment and junk food. The overall plot involves the aliens needing to protect the living computer known as the Pupa, which will one day evolve and terraform the Earth, after consuming the alien family. Naturally.

Here's a quick rundown of some of the big guest stars that will appear in Solar Opposites. Alan Tudyk, Alfred Molina, Christina Hendricks, Echo Kellum, Jason Mantzoukas, Ken Marino, Maurice LaMarche, Miguel Sandoval, Nat Faxon, Natalie Morales, Neil Flynn, Phil LaMarr, Rainn Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, Tom Kenny, and Wendi McLendon-Covey. Two Goldbergs stars in the same animated series? Does this mean we'll get to see Justin Roiland getting silly with Jeff Garlin at some point? Probably not, but at least there are Solar Opposites' zombie teenagers to look forward to.

The entire first season of Solar Opposites will be released on Hulu on Friday, May 8, so no need to worry about any Rick and Morty-esque gaps between episodes. For more than six years now, Adult Swim has been home to one of the most popular adult animated series out there, and Rick and Morty is showing no signs of slowing down, with 65 more episodes guaranteed to debut at some point. As busy as co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon may be with all the sci-fi madness, they aren't forbidden from working on other TV projects. Case in point: Roiland has an oddball passion project called Gloop World that is heading to the Quibi streaming service in 2020.

To be expected, Gloop World sounds about as weird as any new project from Justin Roiland should sound. The two main characters are anthropomorphic blobs respectively named Bob Roundy and Funzy. (Morty would fit in fine with everyone else whose names also end in -y.) Gloop World will follow Bob Roundy and Funzy around the titular suburbia and its outskirts as the characters experience farcical but still approachable adventures.

Don't expect the new show to look anything like the Emmy-winning Rick and Morty, though, because Gloop World will be of the claymation variety. To that end, Roiland is teaming up with fellow Adult Swimmers John Harvatine IV and Eric Towner, both executive producers on Robot Chicken and co-founders of the animation company Stoopid Buddy Stoodios. Harvatine will be handling the directorial duties for Gloop World, having also directed couch gags for The Simpsons and a segment from The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, not to mention EP work on SuperMansion, Hot Streets and more. Justin Roiland, who spent part of the last few years branching out from the Rick and Morty-verse with the surreal and ridiculous video game Trover Saves the Universe, says that Gloop World has been bouncing around in his brain for a long time. Here's how he put it in a statement, via THR.

Justin Roiland taking a detour to the yet-to-debut Quibi is an interesting career move. The streaming startup, whose name is a shortened version of Quick Bites, was founded by Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg and aims to deliver only short-form programming to consumers. With so many 30- and 60-minute series out there, Quibi aims to give audiences shows that require much shorter attention spans, which is a gameplan that Adult Swim has utilized for much of the current millennium. That said, Quibi's content will be even shorter, with all of its episodes running under ten minutes.

Some might look at a claymation show about two blobs hanging out and say, "Wait, I want to watch hour-long episodes of this, and possibly even ten-hour long episodes. Millions of them!" Such is the power of Justin Roiland and his imagination, which have roped in millions of fans over the years. He's also got a Hulu series on the way called Solar Opposites, which fans are likely going to be just as obsessed with.

Why Rick And Morty's Co-Creator Isn't Into Fans Saying 'Wubba Lubba Dub Dub' All The Time

Oh, and let's not forget the second half of Rick and Morty Season 4, which is set to kick back up on Adult Swim in 2020. Stay tuned for more info on that front, as well as more news about Quibi, which is set to debut on April 6, 2020.

Ever since Rick and Morty joined the Adult Swim library back in 2013, co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon have witnessed the show's fanbase head down some pretty dark avenues, from the Szechwan Sauce debacle to the rabid frustration over the time gaps between seasons. Thankfully, though, Season 4 is within spitting distance – it'll arrive in late fall – and the brains behind the animated hit have finally been able to speak in vague terms about what's coming first out of their massive 70-episode expansion.

It was while reflecting on the show's years of popularity, though, that Justin Roiland expounded upon why Rick and Morty's "Wubba lubba dub dub" is the show reference that he's the most sick of hearing at this point.

To reiterate: Justin Roiland doesn't blanket-hate fans who say "Wubba lubba dub dub" and he doesn't exactly hate the act in and of itself. So don't go sending him evil messages saying otherwise.

HIs point is totally valid, though, from a creative standpoint. Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon faced an issue that a lot of writers face with with counter-culture comedies: when certain TV or genre stereotypes are introduced ironically and are then used non-ironically by audiences. Seinfeld, for example, wasn't created with the intent of turning "He's my butler," or "Go Devils!" into fan-beloved catchphrases that would stay in use for decades.

Yet, because it's impossible to predict what viewers will latch onto with such glee, one can never tell when intentionally garbled gibberish like "Wubba lubba dub dub" will be welcomed into pop culture jargon. I mean, Rick and Morty doesn't exactly use the traditional TV success playbook anyway, so it's only fitting for one of its most-quoted lines to be gobbledygook.

Or, at least it was gobbledygook before Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon provided a dark, if brief, backstory for "Wubba lubba dub dub." In Season 1's "Ricksy Business," the character Birdperson is introduced, and he explained to Morty that Ricky's favorite catchphrase actually means "I am in great pain, please help me" in the native Birdperson language.

Rick And Morty Creators Have Some Strong Thoughts About Game Of Thrones Season 8

Perhaps Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon thought that giving the catchphrase a more negative meaning would stop people from using it in celebratory manners the way that Rick initially did. But that would be underestimating the kinds of fans who wish that Mr. Meeseeks and Mr. Poopybutthole were real people. (As if they aren't already, right?)

In the same EW interview, Dan Harmon gave his own take on answering the question about overused catchphrases, but wasn't so negative about the quotes themselves as he was about those who ends up saying them. In his words:

Sections of Rick and Morty's fanbase are known to be among the most vocal and vile in all of TV-dom, which is what turned that Szechwan sauce campaign into such a backwards disaster. And Dan Harmon is among the more outspoken TV creators when it comes to sexism and online bullying, so that answer is even more on brand than Justin Roiland's was.

We still don't know exactly when Season 4 of the Emmy-winning Rick and Morty is going to arrive, though it's scheduled to premiere on Adult Swim in November. It likely won't have anything to do with Kanye West when it does, but Season 5 could possibly alter that, because that's how the world works now. But it's been revealed that Season 4 will boast guest appearances from big names such as Sam Neill, Taika Waititi, Kathleen Turner and Paul Giamatti. Wubba lubba....wait, never mind. I cannot wait!

Game of Thrones brought its massive eight-season saga to an end in May, and to call it "divisive" would be a massive undersell. A lot of people were disappointed by the final season as a whole, and Daenerys' foreshadowed-but-abrupt decision to roast King's Landing will likely go down as the most polarizing twist in the series' history. As it happens, however, the two creators of another popular series are not among those upset by Game of Thrones Season 8. Rick and Morty creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland weighed in.

Dan Harmon, who made headlines last year for an offensive sketch that resurfaced online, revealed that he "was afraid to watch it" at first because he didn't want it to end, then shared his feelings once he did watch:

According to Dan Harmon's comments, fans are the ones with the problem rather than the show. His acknowledgment that the show had to deal with a big problem when it ran out of books to adapt is one noted by a lot of fans, but not all agree with Harmon that showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss accomplished something truly remarkable once they struck out on their own.

Good for Dan Harmon that he's such a fan! Viewers can probably all agree that Game of Thrones Season 8 looked great (when it wasn't too darkly lit to see anything), at the very least.

Dan Harmon didn't state that he was 100% thrilled with the eighth season, but "as satisfied as I possibly could be" isn't a bad endorsement! As for Rick and Morty fans, they don't have to worry about that show's final season any time soon since it scored that massive renewal. Of course, more than a year has passed since one of the co-creators said that big breaks between seasons aren't going to be an issue, and Season 4 has yet to happen, so...

Rick And Morty Season 4: What We Know So Far

But what of Dan Harmon's Rick and Morty co-creator, Justin Roiland, and his feelings about Game of Thrones Season 8? The sauce-loving Roiland, who's had a weird new Hulu show in the works, went on in the chat with EW to say this:

Justin Roiland's words about Game of Thrones Season 8 are less glowing than Dan Harmon's, and they actually echo the feelings of a lot of fans who were fine with the plot twists but simply wanted the show to have spent more time getting to them.

If there were more episodes or seasons, as Justin Roiland suggested, then perhaps "The Long Night" could have been longer, Dany's descent into Mad Queen territory could have been more nuanced, and the finale might have had higher stakes. Alas, we'll never know what could have been. Maybe Roiland's commentary suggests that Rick and Morty fans won't face the same issues in that show's final season, even if that's quite a long way off!

No one should expect a normal answer when someone hits up on the question "What's the latest thing Rick and Morty's Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland have done?" Not now, and not ever, but especially not now, as it's gone public that Harmon and Roiland have publicly offered rap mega-star Kanye West a chance to join Season 4 (or a future season) in a very special way.

Basically, Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland put an offer on the table for Kanye West to join the team for his very own Rick and Morty installment, which I assume would be called a Ye-pisode. Here's how the duo answered when asked if West, a self-proclaimed R&M superfan, could possibly be included in the show's future:

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland's conversation with The Blast started off with such broad views as "We fucking love, Kanye, man," and then less than a minute later, Harmon was essentially putting a pen and paper in Kanye West's hands. I mean, West likely doesn't do his screenwriting on pen and paper, and probably has a telepathic link to any number of word processors.

The point is, Kanye West was granted his own Rick and Morty episode in less time than it takes to name his last five singles. Whether or not that's great news, so-so news, or an atrocity to all that is humane depends on where one fits into the spectrum of Ye's fandom. (And Rick and Morty's, to the same end.)

Rick And Morty Season 4: What We Know So Far

For those whose favorite musician and TV show are the Grammy-winning Kanye West and the Emmy-winning Rick and Morty, respectively, then this news likely indicates a match made in a heaven-shaped place. West has a lot of...unique thoughts and urges happening on a daily basis, and it's easy to think that the unbridled freedom of Rick and Morty and Adult Swim would allow him to tackle whatever subject matter he fancied.

For anyone who loves Rick and Morty but doesn't enjoy Kanye West's music, this concept still holds potential. After all, there are probably Rick and Morty fans out there who didn't like Dan Harmon's Community, so it's safe to assume that just entering Rick and Morty's universe makes everything that much better.

Kanye West music diehards who don't like Rick and Morty are probably getting the shortest end of the stick here. (Minus those who don't like either Ye or R&M, but it doesn't seem like those people would be reading this story with much interest.) I suppose it would be a unique novelty for rap-minded fans to see West's wild imagination come to life through scatological science fiction.

Speaking to the science-y part of things, here is Justin Roiland's assessment of Kanye West's brain-space.

Rick and Morty isn't the only TV venture that Kanye West would be attached to in the near future. (I mean, beyond his appearances on Keeping Up with the Kardashians.) There's that new project Omniverse, in which Jaden Smith will be playing a younger version of West, which is meant to thematically focus on the subconscious and the ego. Actually, I kind of want that show to be part of Rick and Morty Season 4 now. Is it too late?

Will the stars align for Kanye West to actually get his own Rick and Morty episode in Season 4, or is this all just a very weird...rrrrrrrrpp...pipe dream, Morty? As Dan Harmon said, the show got a 70-episode order from Adult Swim, so it's not like they don't have room to fit in whatever bizarro ideas get thrown around.

As it was recently announced, Rick and Morty will return to Adult Swim for Season 4 in November 2019, with a more specific date to be announced later. That's around two years after Season 3 debuted (not counting the April Fools Day premiere), so expect fans to be anxious.

Just a few years ago, no one likely would have predicted the insane levels of popularity that could be reached by a late night animated show about a drunk scientist and his anxiety-clogged grandson. But Rick and Morty is currently one of cable's most popular outliers, turning Justin Roiland into as much of a household name as co-creator (and Community mastermind) Dan Harmon. Now, Roiland is getting to spin his creative wheels elsewhere, as Hulu has ordered up the animated comedy Solar Opposites, which was put together by Roiland and Rick and Morty executive producer Mike McMahon.

Similarly to how Adult Swim locked up Rick and Morty for a massive chunk of future episodes, Hulu definitely seems to have confidence in Solar Opposites' potential. The company's initial order for Justin Roiland's new show is for two seasons, not just one, and fans will get to see a current total of 16 episodes, with presumably eight episodes per season. Since waiting sucks, the creative team needs to follow through on making those limited eps as magnificent as Rick's talent for day drinking, because you know people are going to want to watch them all at once. If only there was some kind of machine, Morty.

Solar Opposites, which is tentatively planned for a 2020 release, was created by Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan. It follows a family of aliens who came to Earth from a planet that's better than ours, and the otherworldly beings have to plant their roots in middle America. It's not immediately clear to them whether their new home is unbelievably terrible or unbelievably great. Knowing how bizarre and over-the-top Roiland's humor can get, it should be quite different to get his take on midwestern life from a pack of aliens' point of view.

Since this is Hulu and not Adult Swim, we definitely won't be seeing any of the aliens that occasionally pop up on Rick and Morty's most out-there episodes. But we will get to hear Justin Roiland's voice, as he'll be portraying the characters Terry and Korvo. Meanwhile, The Goldbergs' star Sean Giambrone and comedian Mary Mack will be playing the aliens Yumyulack and Jesse, respectively. Nothing much was disclosed about what these aliens will be like, but don't expect any of it to be suitable for kids.

We likely won' be getting any preliminary views for quite a long time on Solar Opposites, as _Deadline reports the show's writers room isn't scheduled to open up until October. If the animation process isn't too lengthy, it's possible we could see Justin Roiland's next big TV effort as early as Fall 2019, but it could be even later. Rule number one for _Solar Opposite should be to not make any big references to any obscure fast food sauces that came out 20 years ago. The Rick and Morty fandom doesn't always take it so well when those sauces aren't completely resurrected.

Thanks to shows like Archer and BoJack Horseman, adult animation is one of TV's fastest growing genres. Hulu had previously produced the superhero animated comedy The Awesomes, and also has the highly anticipated Animaniacs reboot in the works. (The Uglydolls show probably won't hit upon too many hyper-mature themes.) And then you have Matt Groening's recent Netflix release Disenchantment, Bob's Burgers creator Loren Bouchard's new musical comedy Central Park on Apple, and more fun projects on the way. If only Mr. Poopybutthole could get his own spinoff now.

Justin Roiland won't be lacking for busywork at any point in the near future. Earlier this year, Adult Swim ordered up 70 more episodes of Rick and Morty, which the creative team has been hard at work on, trying to get things just right without making fans wait eons between seasons. It's assumed that Season 4 will debut later this year or early in 2019. While waiting to hear more on any of Roiland's creations, head to our fall TV premiere schedule to see what else is coming.
