Mother’s Day can be a wonderful time to honor the moms and other maternal figures in your life; however, for many people the holiday isn’t so easy. For the past few months we’ve been invested Savannah Guthrie’s tragic story, with still no resolution on what happened to her 84-year-old mother Nancy, who has been missing since February 1. Guthrie shared an emotional post Sunday, and her Today Show family and others reached out in support.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen the night of January 31, and despite evidence including blood that was not Nancy’s and camera footage showing a masked man around her house on the night of the disappearance, there has not been a break in the case to explain what happened to the 84-year-old. Savannah shared a slideshow of videos and photos of her mother, again pleading for someone to come forward with information. You can see her Instagram post below:

It’s wonderful that Savannah Guthrie has so many videos of Nancy to hear her mother’s voice, and her post also includes lots of photos of her mom over the years. In any other context, this would be such a happy tribute, but with so much uncertainty still surrounding the situation, it’s absolutely heartbreaking.

Savannah Guthrie isn’t going through it alone, though. In addition to her family, she’s got her colleagues — and the Today co-hosts are very much like family. Just like they did right after her mom disappeared, they reached out on Mother’s Day to offer kind words and prayers in the comment section of her post:

Savannah Guthrie returned to The Today Show in April after spending two months in Arizona amidst the investigation, and while some things have changed — increased security, for one — The Today Show crew is just trying to be there for Guthrie however they can be.

Unlike other Mother’s Day tributes that we saw on so many celebrities’ social media accounts Sunday, Savannah Guthrie’s message that accompanied the above slideshow was filled with heartache, as she said her family will not rest until they have answers. She also included the number to the FBI tip line, writing:

We all continue to hope for a conclusion to this case so that Savannah Guthrie and her family can finally learn what happened to Nancy Guthrie. There’s nothing else that could have made Mother’s Day easier for them, but I’m glad Savannah has so much support from her co-workers in the meantime.

As the investigation continues into the abduction of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, there are several questions about what the future of The Today Show looks like. It’s not clear at this point how long she will remain off the air, or even if Guthrie might permanently quit the position that she’s held since 2012. Still, according to former Today co-host Katie Couric, there’s one big reason the show has been “fortunate” amidst these “tragically unprecedented” circumstances.

It’s now been four weeks since 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was reported missing, as authorities believe she was taken from her home against her will in the early morning hours of February 1. Savannah has been in Arizona since then to assist in the investigation however she can and has even sent messages to “whoever has” her mother, asking for her safe return. It’s been a time of great uncertainty back in The Today Show studio, Katie Couric said, telling Variety:

It’s always been obvious to NBC viewers how genuinely close The Today Show crew is both on- and off-camera — you “can’t fake the funk,” as Carson Daly put it — and they’ve all been supporting Savannah Guthrie and her family with prayers and messages, and holding down the fort while she’s away. Yellow flowers and ribbons have been incorporated into the morning show’s set as a symbol of hope as well.

But, as Katie Couric pointed out, they also have to find a way to put their personal connections aside, to some degree, in order to cover the news story. Viewers have been tuning in to get updates on the Guthries’ situation, and the longtime journalist said The Today Show is lucky to have Hoda Kotb filling in for Savannah. Couric said:

Hoda Kotb stepped away from The Today Show after 17 years last January in order to prioritize her own family, so she understands Savannah Guthrie’s need to be in Arizona right now as well as anyone. Kotb is someone who Today fans know and trust, and I agree with Katie Couric that she is the perfect person to hold things down in this scary time of transition.

We’re continuing to watch the situation regarding Nancy Guthrie, as well as if or when Savannah will return to the airwaves.

Since television began, women have been an important part of its history. This is a list of many of the groundbreaking women who have made their mark not only for themselves but for all women in the industry. Women like Lucille Ball, Barbara Walters, Mary Tyler Moore, and many more.

Lucille Ball

I Love Lucy has been one of the most enduring hits in the history of television. It's been on TV both in the first run when it first aired in 1951 and in reruns ever since. Almost the entire time TV has been in people's homes. Of course, that's all because of the brilliant Lucille Ball's performance as Lucy. She's a one-of-kind legend we're unlikely to see the likes of again.

Roxie Roker

Over the course of her incredible career, Roxie Roker broke new ground everywhere she acted, whether it be on the big screen, the Broadway stage, or, as Helen Willis on The Jeffersons, on television. The most important thing Roker did on TV seems so antiquated now that it's hard to believe, but when she was on a hit CBS show, she was actually the first Black actress to appear on a TV show in a relationship with a white man. It was a huge deal.

Carol Burnett

Not only is Carol Burnett one of the funniest women in TV history, but she's at or near the top of the list of the funniest people, period. Her eponymous show was a groundbreaking sketch comedy show and she not only paved the way for more female comedians to have their own show, she paved the way for enduring sketch comedy shows like Saturday Night Live

Betty White

There are few actors more beloved than Betty White. When she died just shy of her 100th birthday in 2021, the outpouring of grief from fans was incredible. It wasn't just for her roles on legendary shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Golden Girls, but for her whole career in television back to its earliest days.

Shonda Rhimes

Many of the women on this list are here for what they've done in front of the camera. Shonda Rhimes is here for what she does behind the scenes as one of the most prolific show creators of all time. Not only is she one of the first women to be so successful as a TV producer, but she's one of the first Black women to do it, making it doubly important and groundbreaking.

Ellen DeGeneres

It's obvious why Ellen DeGeneres is on this list, but that doesn't mean we should overlook the obvious. When DeGeneres came out as a lesbian on her sitcom in 1997 it was actually earthshattering. It shouldn't have been and today, something like that would hardly be blinked at and that's all because she had the guts to do it when she did.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag does something that few shows have done before it - it's an unflinching look at the life of a single woman and by doing that it, it automatically less of the cultural taboo it's been for far too long. It's weird that it's taken so long for something like this be a cultural stone, but at least we're here now.

Barbara Walters

In the TV news business, there is no more groundbreaking figure than the legendary Barbara Walters. As a news broadcaster, reporter, interviewer, and panel host, Walters did many things no woman before her had ever done. It's hard to downplay just how much of a trailblazer Walters was during her amazing career.

Marta Kauffman

As the producer and co-creator of Friends, Marta Kauffman showed the world that a woman could create what was, at the time, the biggest show in the world. It wasn't a show "for women," Friends was a show for everyone and few shows have seen the kind of popularity Friends had - and continues to have today with its endless life on streaming.

Mary Tyler Moore

Without The Mary Tyler Moore show, we might not have had other trailblazing shows like Murphy Brown, or Ellen, or Fleabag. Mary Tyler Moore did it first and, for many, still did it best. Before he blazed a trail on her own, she was also an early hero on The Dick Van Dyke Show. She truly made it on her own on TV.

Jane Curtain, Lorraine Newman, And Gilda Radner

It had to be hard for the three women in the original "Not Ready For Prime Time Players" on Saturday Night Live, Jane Curtain, Lorraine Newman, And Gilda Radner. The show felt like a frat house at times and there they were, consistently as funny or funnier than the frat bros that made up the rest of the amazing cast. Talk about groundbreaking.

Cicely Tyson

Cicely Tyson's first television role came in 1961 and her final appearance came just before her death in 2020. In between she starred in literally 100s of episodes of television and often was the first and only Black woman on those shows and episodes. There aren't enough words to explain how important she was for every Black woman who came after her on TV.

Peggy Charren

Activist Peggy Charren is different than most on this list. She wasn't an actress, nor did she even work in the television industry. Instead, she was an advocate for the children at home watching. It's because of the work of Charren that kids had the option to watch informative and educational TV, and not just corporate drivel made to sell more sugary cereal to them. Anyone who grew up loving Sesame Street or The Electric Company has Charren to thank, at least in large part.

Katie Couric

It's hard to believe that it took until 2006 for a major network to have a female lead anchor, but it's true. That woman was, of course, Katie Couric and for that alone, she should forever be remembered as a groundbreaker. She's done so much more as well, so it's not the only thing she'll be remembered and appreciated for.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Julia Louis-Dreyfus' career has been nothing short of spectacular. She is one of very few people, much less women, to have won more than 10 Emmy Awards, for her work on not one, not two, but three hit shows. Seinfeld, The Old Adventures of New Christine, and Veep have all been great in large part due to her talent and hard work.

Irna Phillips

On her Wikipedia page, Irna Phillips is described as a scriptwriter, screenwriter, casting agent, and actress. In reality, she kind of invented the entire genre of the soap opera in the 1940s, first on radio and later on TV. She was the first to really pinpoint women as a target audience and write and create shows geared towards them. Daytime TV would be very different if not for Phillips.

Diahann Carroll

Diahann Carroll isn't the most famous person on this list and that's kind of weird because her contribution to TV is huge. Her groundbreaking role as the lead in Julia showed that Black actors, especially Black women, could be a whole more than just maids or other stereotypical roles they typically played before Julia debuted in 1968.

Candice Bergen

Even before she blazed a new trail in Murphy Brown as the first woman on TV to express the desire to raise a child as a single mom, Candice Bergen was breaking ground on TV. She was the first female member of the SNL Five-Timers Club, for example. As the lead on Murphy Brown, she won so many Emmys (five) that she started declining invitations to give others a chance at the career boost a win provided.

Bea Arthur

Like her cast mates on Golden Girls, Bea Arthur was a true trailblazer. For starters, she is one of few women in Hollywood who served in the active military during World War II as a marine. Once she got to Hollywood, she played by her own rules which eventually landed her a recurring role on All In The Family in the early '70s, tackling some of the biggest issues of the day. That led to the spinoff Maude where she was unflinching in her pursuit of bringing women's liberation issues to the forefront on prime-time TV, including such political hot topics as sensitive as abortion in the early '70s.

Oprah Winfrey

Of all the entries on this list, the one who might need the least introduction is Oprah Winfrey. Starting with a small locally-produced talk show on TV called AM Chicago and later simply The Oprah Winfrey Show, Winfrey built a massive media empire and became one of the biggest moguls in television. Her empire reaches across all forms of media these days and she's among the richest people in the world. And then there are all the cars she's given away...

Nichelle Nichols

Nichelle Nichols was the sole woman in the original Star Trek cast and she more than held her own. Not only was she an equal member of the Enterprise crew, she was an equal member of the cast. On the show, Nichols' character Uhura shared an on-screen with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) which was one of the first, and most famous example of an interracial kiss on network television. It seems simple, but it was incredibly groundbreaking at the time.

Donna Reed

There were plenty of family-focused sitcoms on 1950s television. What set The Donna Reed Show apart is evident by its name. It was one of the first shows that focused on the mother, played by Donna Reed, as the primary character of the show. This wasn't Father's Knows Best or My Three Sons. Reed was the star and the main character. Additionally, she was no mere wallflower. She was a strong, independent-minded mother and wife who had a full life as a homemaker and mother and audiences saw it all, not just June Cleaver doing the dishes while wearing her pearls.

Laverne Cox

Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox wasn't the first transgender woman on TV, but she was one of the most visible as part of such a huge hit. Cox, and her character were remarkable not only because she was was transgender but because her character Sophia dealt with problems that weren't just because she was transgender, but because she was also human locked up in prison. Sophia wasn't simply a one dimensional character, she was much more than her gender. That was, and still is, rare.

Jodie Whittaker

If she does nothing else in her career (and that is unlikely), Jodie Whittaker will forever be known for being the first female Doctor on Doctor Who. That alone makes her incredibly groundbreaking and worthy of inclusion on this list. There was even a time when critics and fans thought that such a thing would be impossible. Whittaker has been remarkably popular and has proven all the doubters wrong.

Marlo Thomas

Like many instances on this list, it's hard to believe that there was ever a time when it was shocking to even consider an entire television show focused on an unmarried woman. Of course, there was a time when that was true, but that was before Marlo Thomas starred in That Girl starting in 1968. The show, which was actually a little controversial at the time was all about Thomas' character moving to New York to try to make it in show business.

Debbie Allen

Debbie Allen is probably best known as the star of the TV version of Fame (and a small role as the same character in the movie), as well as a judge of So You Think You Can Dance. But Allen's accomplishments run so much deeper than that. She is one of the most prolific TV directors of the last few decades and was the choreographer for the Oscars for a decade. She's had an amazing career on both sides of the camera.

Kerry Washington

It's really hard to wrap one's head around the fact that between Julia, starring Diahann Carroll, which ended in 1971, and Scandal when it started in 2012 (created by Shonda Rhimes), there were no TV shows with a Black female lead. Kerry Washington changed all that when Scandal became a huge hit and ran for six seasons on ABC.

Lynda Carter

Who says girls can't be superheroes? Well, today we know all too well that women can not only be superheroes, but they can lead franchises as such. Back in the late '70s, that was an open question that was answered by Lynda Carter who helped turn Wonder Woman into a hit show that ran for three seasons and then became a staple of syndication for years after.

Sandra Oh

It seems like Sandra Oh has been around forever. She got her big break as part of the cast of Arliss on HBO, then found more fame as a member of the cast of Grey's Anatomy. Her groundbreaking moment came in the titular character in Killing Eve. When she did, she became the first woman of Asian descent to lead a show in the United States. Remarkably it took until 2018 for that to happen. Like all the other women on this is, she proved there are still trails to be blazed.

Pauline Frederick

Pauline Frederick was a groundbreaking female reporter with ABC and NBC during her career. She covered major events like World War II and the Vietnam War, first on radio and then as one of the first female reporters on TV.

Mary Kay Stearns

Like the TV network it was first broadcast on, The DuMont Network, Mary Kay Stearns, and her sitcom Mary Kay And Johnny has mostly been lost to time. Few people remember the show or the network and that's too bad, because both were groundbreaking. In fact, Mary Kay And Johnny was the very first sitcom ever aired on broadcast TV when it debuted in 1948. Mary Kay Stearns starred with her real-life husband Johnny Stearns and not only was it the first sitcom, but it was the first show to feature a pregnant woman and the first to show a married couple sleeping in the same bed.

Viola Davis

As an EGOT winner, Viola Davis has proven over and over what a powerhouse actor she is, no matter where it is. Whether on stage, in film, or on television, she is one of the best to ever do it.

Some of the best talk show hosts have been celebrities, and vice versa, throughout the history of this celebrated medium. However, that doesn’t mean just anyone can hold the desk equally. Keep that in mind as you take in this list of famous celebs who tried to make a talk show happen, but just couldn’t hold their own.

Regis Philbin - The Regis Philbin Show - 1981 - 1982

Throughout the history of Regis Philbin's best movie appearances, as well as his career as a legendary talk show host, the man made a name for himself as someone who knew how to talk to people. But even with his resume of success bookending The Regis Philbin Show's 1981-1982 run, there was still room to learn as this short-lived endeavor proved.

Alan Thicke - Thicke Of The Night - 1983 - 1984

Could Alan Thicke have made Thicke of the Night last under more ideal circumstances? Maybe, but then again, any show that tried to take on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson kind of deserved to be put through the wringer. On the plus side, Thicke wasn’t too far off from starring in Growing Pains, where he’d show us his smile again.

Joan Rivers - The Late Show - 1986 - 1988

Joan Rivers’ “permanent guest host” status on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show was exactly why the comedy icon landed her own series, The Late Show. Directly competing with that NBC landmark in a live program for the Fox network, this albatross supposedly ended the long friendship between Rivers and Carson.

Pat Sajak - The Pat Sajak Show - 1989 - 1990

Being a game show host isn’t the same as being a talk show host. Just ask game show icon Pat Sajak, whose own attempts at crossover success with The Pat Sajak Show never landed. Low ratings took this show out of commission, with Sajak not even hosting the final episode of his own show. After which point the only gaffes Pat would witness were those made on Wheel of Fortune.

Dennis Miller - The Dennis Miller Show - 1992

Sometimes talk shows fail because of not playing to the right audience. In the case of SNL vet Dennis Miller, we would see him flourish through HBO’s Dennis Miller Live program between 1994 and 2002. However, the syndication market didn’t exactly pick up on the man’s unique vibe, which is more than likely why The Dennis Miller Show never made it out of 1992.

Chevy Chase - The Chevy Chase Show - 1993

One of the most infamous late-night flameouts of all time, The Chevy Chase Show saw the SNL comedy legend trying to compete in the late-night wars on behalf of the fledgling Fox network. Not only did Chase’s show fail, but it was the continuation of a long-standing curse that TV titan still encounters to this day.

Jon Stewart - The Jon Stewart Show - 1993 - 1995

"Cancellation should not be confused with failure." David Letterman imparted those words to Jon Stewart as The Jon Stewart Show was literally canceled the day of that very interview. An unsuccessful jump from MTV to syndication could be the major factor that was to blame, though Letterman’s words eventually rang true when Stewart went on to become The Daily Show’s longtime host in 1999. 

Charles Grodin - The Charles Grodin Show - 1995-1998

Charles Grodin’s expertise in playing a curmudgeon made him a popular guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. So one could think placing that energy behind the desk would be a recipe for success, and that’s what CNBC had hoped when debuting The Charles Grodin Show. Twenty-six episodes later, that assumption was tested, and proven false.

Keenen Ivory Wayans - The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show - 1997 - 1998

With the magnetism that propelled him to success in movies and with TV’s In Living Color, surely Keenen Ivory Wayans had the juice to turn late night on its head, right? Nope. Lasting only a few short months, The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show was out like a flash. Judging by Keenen’s claims that he wasn’t really given the free reign he’d expected with the series, it’s no surprise why.

Magic Johnson - The Magic Hour - 1998

Eight weeks was all it took for NBA legend Magic Johnson to flame out on the talk show circuit. The Magic Hour was anything but, with critics clearly not digging the man’s style when it came to holding court on TV. Save for an infamous episode with one of his staunchest critics, Howard Stern, there wasn’t much enchantment to be found here.

Martin Short - The Martin Short Show - 1999 - 2000

The bad news is that certified comedy legend Martin Short didn’t last very long as the host of The Martin Short Show. However, the silver lining to be had is the fact that this short engagement in the land of talk shows did give us one of his most memorable characters, as this was the launching pad for one Jiminy Glick. 

Queen Latifah - The Queen Latifah Show - 1999 - 2001/2013 - 2015

Sometimes it all comes down to timing and ratings, both of which seemed to be the death knell for The Queen Latifah Show in its two separate incarnations. The 1999-2001 run could be seen as ahead of its time, while the 2013-2015 run saw a promising start leading to declining ratings. 

Wayne Brady - The Wayne Brady Show - 2001 - 2004

It’s still hard to believe that the charming and quick-witted Wayne Brady couldn’t make it in daytime talk. Though the Let’s Make A Deal host is doing quite well for himself now, The Wayne Brady Show was a bit of a stumbling block on his career path. Luckily, right before the show went off the air, Wayne’s infamous Chappelle's Show sketch went to air, and it gave him a win that overshadowed the whole business.

Zach Galifianakis - Late World with Zach - 2002

Zach Galifianakis’ Late World with Zach on MTV is a particularly notable example of what happens when a talent like this Hangover star lands at the wrong time. All of the ingredients were there, as MTV let Zach be Zach; but people weren’t clued into the gag just yet, because many of Galifianakis' best movies weren't out yet. By the time Between Two Ferns kicked off though, the world was ready, and a confrontational legend was born.

Caroline Rhea - The Caroline Rhea Show - 2002 - 2003

When a notable talk show host leaves, there’s always the question of who carries on their legacy of schtick. As The Rosie O’Donnell Show came to a close, Caroline Rhea’s talk show, The Caroline Rhea Show, attempted to pass that torch to the Sabrina the Teenage Witch legend. The networks, and audiences, were not exactly supportive, and after 195 episodes, it was no more.

Sharon Osbourne - The Sharon Osbourne Show - 2003 - 2004

Before Sharon Osbourne's "embarrassing" departure from The Talk, she struck it out on her own to try and parlay some of her reality TV fame into a chat show. And yet, The Sharon Osbourne Show didn't last, as the show failed to land a following, leaving Sharon to let it die a quiet, un-renewed death. 

John McEnroe - McEnroe - 2004

Tennis is a grueling sport, but talk shows can be even more of a battlefield if you’re not careful. John McEnroe learned that the hard way during a handful of months in 2004, when his series McEnroe went from a critically panned debut to a critically panned finale. Even his most dedicated fans have probably overlooked it, with a mere mention of the series prompting many exclamations of, “You can’t be serious!”

Megan Mullally - The Megan Mullally Show - 2006 - 2007

Sometimes our preconceptions get the better of us, and shows like The Megan Mullally Show suffer as a result. As audiences were taken aback by Mullally failing to be her Will & Grace character in real life, there was nowhere to go but down for this daytime talk show.

George Lopez - Lopez Tonight - 2009 - 2011

If it wasn’t for Conan O’Brien, Lopez Tonight may have had a healthy run on TBS. Though it seemed his hiring could have boosted George Lopez’s show, the only shake-up it got was being moved into a later time slot, with weakened ratings. However, this all happened with O’Brien trying to avoid any sort of bad blood along the way, with the host even paying tribute to this slain series on its final night of air.

Wanda Sykes - The Wanda Sykes Show - 2009 - 2010

Following in the footsteps of Joan Rivers’ The Late Show and Chevy Chase’s The Chevy Chase Show, Fox really wanted to make late-night happen with comedian Wanda Sykes. Unfortunately for the network, The Wanda Sykes Show was such a disappointment that it hasn’t even tried to mount another original program in that later evening block since. 

Katie Couric - Katie - 2012 - 2014

A staple of NBC’s Today, seeing Katie Couric go to daytime talk felt like a lateral move. Moving to ABC to do so was certainly the most shocking turn of it all, at least until Katie was mutually canceled by its star and overseers. What started as a good run soon fell into a slump, leaving this enterprise grounded by 2014.

Bethenny Frankel - Bethenny - 2012 - 2014

How’s this for a story? The Real Housewives of New York alum Bethenny Frankel tried to kickstart her talk show Bethenny, only for it to initially get shelved. Fate seemed to smile on the entrepreneur as the show was revived for a run between 2012 and 2014. Only 170 episodes would be produced before the hammer came down, freeing Frankel up for appearances on shows like Shark Tank. 

Kris Jenner - Kris - 2013

It wasn’t cancellation that ended Kris’ brief 2013 run, as the talk show fronted by Kris Jenner was only being tested when it aired. Coincidentally the most notable episode was its finale, which saw Kanye West showing off the first photos of her granddaughter North. Ratings spiked, but it couldn’t save this ship from sinking. 

Khloé Kardashian - Kocktails With Khloé - 2016

A TV show where the host drinks with their guests? Not a bad move, especially when someone with clout like Khloé Kardashian could get the concept greenlit for cable. Unfortunately for Kocktails with Khloé, the show struck out after 14 episodes; more than likely due to the perfect storm of airing on cable and audience feedback sounding rather disappointed with the overall product.

Harry Connick Jr. - Harry - 2016 - 2018

For someone as adept at conversation and shenanigans as Harry Connick Jr., to fail in the talk show landscape always feels like a waste. Harry capitalized on the former American Idol judge’s star power and charisma, but even then audiences weren’t buying as heavily as when he was a part of Fox’s former reality show fixture.

Sarah Silverman - I Love You, America With Sarah Silverman - 2017 - 2018

There still isn’t a clear answer as to why Hulu canceled I Love You, America with Sarah Silverman. A mashup of talk show and sketch show, Silverman took on the tough issues of our modern times with her trademark sense of humor. Twenty-one episodes still don’t seem like a long enough run, but that’s sadly where things ended.

Lilly Singh - A Little Late With Lilly Singh - 2019 - 2021

With Carson Daly giving up the throne of Last Call with Carson Daly, NBC made what seemed like a smart move. By tapping famous YouTuber Lilly Singh for her show A Little Late with Lilly Singh, the network was clearly trying to get the younger generation to tune into this tested timeslot. It didn’t work, even with some changes to the format in the second season, and with this show’s demise also came that of the 1:35 A.M. slot at NBC.

Kathy Griffin - Kathy - 2012 - 2013

Giving Kathy Griffin her own talk show, after years of being banned from shows like Ellen and The View, was probably a bit of a surprise. In fact, the only thing that would have been more surprising is if Kathy had actually lasted past its short spell of 24 episodes on Bravo.

ALF’s Hit Talk Show tried pretty hard in its extremely brief run to make TV Land viewers stay up a bit later. Not even guests like Merv Griffin and Doris Roberts, not to mention professional sidekick/Tonight Show legend Ed McMahon could push this affair past seven episodes.

You’d think a talk show with Russell Brand at the helm would be something so controversial you’d have at least heard of it. That appears to not be the case, as FX failed to crack the same molds it had broken with shows like The Shield with its two-season run of Brand X with Russell Brand. 

Bonnie Hunt - The Bonnie Hunt Show - 2008 - 2010

Bonnie Hunt not only had the comedic chops and kindness to host something like The Bonnie Hunt Show, but she infused it with a creative spin. Thanks to guests being able to enter the set through various methods of excitement, like a firepole, there seemed to be some magic in giving the Cheaper by the Dozen star a daytime talk slot. Two seasons, and even a couple of award nominations later, it was lights out.

Fran Drescher - The Fran Drescher Tawk Show - 2010

For six seasons and 146 episodes, Fran Drescher charmed the world as Fran Fine on CBS’ The Nanny. Sadly, that sort of effortless affability didn’t help The Fran Drescher Tawk Show make it past 16 episodes in 2010. And yes, that did include a humorous reunion with her co-star Charles Shaughnessy. 

Even with the most pleasing personality, the best time slot, and a pedigree in the business, talk shows are a concept that can still present a gamble. Many celebrities have tried, and many more probably will in the future; because when you can make it as a talk show host, you can pretty much write your own ticket from that point on.

Former Today show co-host and CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric stepped away from the television spotlight years ago, but she still has plenty of takes about the small screen. Recently, Couric weighed in on the second season of Sex and the City spinoff And Just Like That with John Corbett's return as Aidan Shaw ... with a question that's definitely worth a laugh. Is it as hard-hitting as what she asked back in her days of news broadcasting? Maybe not, but it's one that I think plenty of And Just Like That... viewers would like an answer to! 

John Corbett returned as Aidan from Sex and the City and the second SATC movie on the heels of reprising his To All the Boys I've Loved Before role for XO, Kitty and playing Hilary Duff's love interest on How I Met Your Father. Aidan's arrival has seen mixed reactions from fans. Katie Couric's take wasn't on whether or not Aidan should be Carrie's first truly serious relationship after the death of Big, but on something a little less pivotal to the plot. 

In the comments on writer and podcast host Evan Ross Katz's Instagram post about hoping that Carrie wouldn't break Aidan's heart again, Couric wrote: 

Point to Katie Couric, if you ask me! Despite John Corbett hardly looking like he's aged since his earlier appearances as Aidan, he definitely wasn't wearing a jacket tightly belted around his waist in Sex and the City or the second movie! That may not be the top takeaway from his return to Carrie's life, but Couric's comment hasn't gotten more than 2,500 likes (at the time of writing) because nobody agrees with her! 

In fact, American Horror Story veteran Sarah Paulson was among the many to respond to her comment, and she went all-caps with "THIS THIS THIS." Other reactions to Couric's comment include Kathy Copcutt writing "Jesus Christ they did him so wrong!!! So wrong" and Jonathan Daly posting "@katiecouric out here getting to the POINT! 😂😂😂 we ❤️ u Ms. Couric!" 

And the former Katie host wasn't done! Although she didn't add anything more to that original post, she commented on a repost by the commentsbycelebs account, which noted that she'd asked a "Valid Question." In response, Couric commented:

While her first comment didn't necessarily mean that she's a fan actually watching And Just Like That... when pretty much anybody could have had something to say about Aidan's belted jacket, I think her weighing in on the farmhouse is proof that Katie Couric is watching the Sex and the City spinoff with a Max subscription!

It remains to be seen if the former news anchor will have more takes on And Just Like That... Season 2. After the latest episode that released on August 10, only two are left, and the show has not yet been renewed (or cancelled) for Season 3. Fans still have Kim Cattrall's Season 2 finale cameo as Samantha Jones to look forward to, which Sarah Jessica Parker wasn't happy about being leaked.

A random text, a rat, Christmas dinner, and a viral moment eventually led to quite the story for Katie Couric. However, while this story is crazy, it turned out to be too good to be true, as the journalist revealed while chronicling the exchange on her Instagram. 

Couric received a text from a stranger, who called herself Susan on Wednesday. Susan was beside herself because there was supposedly a rat in her toilet. The journalist was confused because she didn’t have the number, and the conversation went on from there, which she posted to Instagram, and you can read here: 

As you can see, the woman did not believe she was texting the real Katie Couric, and the reporter ended up sending her a photo of herself to prove it. Then Susan responded, saying:

According to the texts Susan’s son caught the rat in some Tupperware, and he wanted to name the rodent Splinter. They then discussed Couric going over for Christmas because her posts about the texts had gone viral. Susan then explained that the journalist couldn’t just show up, she had to clean first. Which Couric posted a screenshot of: 

The conversation ended with Couric wishing Susan luck at her upcoming doctor's appointment and urging her to stop smoking. 

Turns out Couric should have been questioning Susan’s identity too, since it ended up being a scam as she wrote in her caption. The Jeopardy guest host wrote an update in her caption that said: 

While it’s a big bummer it ended up being a scam, Couric hasn’t lost her holiday spirit (as you can see in her other holiday posts), and many people have been thoroughly amused by the entire interaction. 

Former Real House Wives of New York star Bethenny Frankel however, was not falling for it, as she commented:

Even though this wild situation is sketchier than Dwayne Johnson pranking Ryan Reynolds or some of Jim’s best prinks from The Office, Couric is making light of the situation, and she is treating the scam with a good sense of humor.  And who knows, maybe after this entire situation Susan, if that’s even their real name, will stop smoking. 

Bob Saget’s friends, fans, co-stars and more have celebrated his life and mourned his death over the past several weeks. The number of stories that have come out from co-stars like John Stamos and even stories from acquaintances like Steve Harvey have been memorable and compelling. But the people most affected by the loss of the Full House star are his family, including his wife Kelly Rizzo. One month after Bob’s passing, she reached out to some people who would know what she’s going through: Nick Cordero’s wife Amanda Kloots and Katie Couric. 

In a blink-and-you-might-miss it post on Instagram Stories, Kelly Rizzo shared a night out with the gals. But this wasn’t a usual night out. Instead, she spent time with Katie Couric and Amanda Kloots, who both unexpectedly lost their husbands, too. In her post, she talks about “women who have been there and understand,” noting (via People): 

If you are familiar with Katie Couric’s story, the news anchor lost her husband Jay Monahan back in 1998 after nine years of marriage. Her partner was only 42 at the time and the two shared two children. Couric’s been open over the years about what happened when her husband was sick. She's actually been candid about being “too scared” to deal with what was happening at the time, saying it takes “extraordinary courage” to face death in an interview with People just last year. 

Of course, Amanda Kloots is notable now for starring on The Talk, but her name became known after her husband, Blue Bloods actor and Broadway star Nick Cordero, died following a bout with Covid-19 early on in the pandemic. He was one of the first notable names to pass away of complications arising from the disease, and given he was only 41 at the time of his death, the news was all-the-more striking. It seems that Rizzo and Kloots have been spending some time together in grief support; a separate post shared by The Talk star indicated the two are in a “weird club” one would never hope to be in.

At the time of that post, Rizzo had noted, "If I’m going to be in this club, I’m grateful to have genuine caring people like you by my side."  In fact, though, Amanda Kloots is an open book when it comes to her journey following Nick Cordero’s death. She posts a lot about their son, Elvis, and a post this weekend could just as easily be advice for Bob Saget’s wife as she moves forward. 

Given the recent update that Bob Saget was Covid-19 positive and had suffered from head trauma causing an injury that led to his death, Kelly Rizzo doubtless has a little more closure regarding why Saget passed away when he still seemingly had so much verve and energy.

For the Full House actor's wife, the grieving process is just started. Kelly Rizzo has been reminiscing about she and Bob Saget’s relationship and positive memories, particularly this week, as she hit the one-month milestone since news broke that Bob Saget had died at 65. The couple had met back in 2015 and married in 2018; they’d had nearly six years together and she recalled a fondness for Bob living “life to its fullest” and the two of them loving to eat out and try new things together. Having support during these times is crucial and it's nice to see others being there for her during this time.  

Many Today fans were stunned when co-anchor Matt Lauer was fired after several sexual harassment accusations were brought against him in late November 2017. In the time since that, people have wondered whether or not Katie Couric, who’d been his co-anchor for about eight years, had any information regarding what was allegedly going on behind the scenes with him. Now, Couric has opened up about what she did and didn't know about Lauer’s behavior.

Katie Couric had already been co-anchor of Today for around seven years when Matt Lauer took the anchor seat alongside her at the long-running NBC daytime show. When he was fired, it seemed evident that his co-workers at the time were largely surprised by the claims, but fans who’ve been wanting to know what Couric may have known now have their answer. While speaking with Today’s Savannah Guthrie in preparation for the release of her book, Going There, Couric was asked about Lauer and said:

In her upcoming book, Couric admitted that she contacted Lauer after word of his firing and the allegations came out, with her texting “I am crushed. I love you and care about you deeply,” and letting him know that she was available to talk if he felt he needed it. Now, in her book, Couric said that “it felt so heartless to abandon him, someone who'd been by my side, literally, for so many years.” But, she also admitted that she’d heard “whispers” about his behavior, though she didn’t specify if that was only while she was still at Today, or also sometime after she left, which was in 2006.

Couric also didn’t explicitly say what information those “whispers” held. The first allegation against Lauer came from former NBC News producer Brooke Nevils, who accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior during the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and later said that he raped her while they were working the event. Claims from other women included that he would make salacious comments, that he showed one woman his genitalia, and would use the security feature in his office (which allowed executives to lock their door without getting up) to hold women inside, among other allegations.

Lauer quickly apologized for his “words and actions” which hurt people, but denied that his sexual contact with Nevils was anything but “completely consensual.”

Talking about the professional atmosphere when she was working at Today, Couric added:

All in all, Katie Couric says that she had difficulties figuring out why Matt Lauer “behaved the way he did," and seemed to have acted in such a "reckless and callous and honestly abusive" manner to several women he interacted with, and it appears that she was mostly in the dark on what was claimed to be going on during his Today tenure.

Former The Walking Dead star Steven Yeun had a big day yesterday as he landed his first Oscar nomination for his work in Minari. New Jeopardy! guest host Katie Couric noticed, and shared a post celebrating what is also an Academy Awards milestone: the first major nomination for an Asian American in the Best Actor category. It’s a big month for diversity in the world of entertainment, as Katie Couric is herself breaking barriers this month -- in her case on television -- as well.

It was a big day for the Oscars yesterday, as the most recent batch of nominations was officially announced. Not only were two women nominated for Best Director, but nine of the 20 acting nominees came from varying backgrounds ethnically. Minari ultimately landed six nominations, including one for actor Steven Yeun, who has been nominated in the Best Actor category for his work. Katie Couric had recently interviewed Yeun and director Lee Isaac Chung, and celebrated with the two on Twitter:

It’s a big month for milestones in general, as Katie Couric just hit one of her own. After a long tenure with Alex Trebek as the host of Jeopardy!, the long-running game show has had on a series of guest hosts to fill Trebek’s shoes in the short term. This has included previous Jeopardy! winner Ken Jennings and also executive producer Mike Richards. This week, Katie Couric began her tenure as the Jeopardy! guest host, becoming the first female to do so.

A slew of other guest hosts are going to take the reins over the next few months, including former NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Dr. Oz and some other leading ladies, including The Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik and Savannah Guthrie. (The Big Bang Theory actress even mentioned it was a lifelong "dream come true.") It's hard telling which person -- if any of the upcoming hosts -- the show will stick with, but it is currently making history either way.

As for Minari, the new movie had a quietly charming release. It initially won multiple awards upon release at the Sundance International Film Festival before the world shut down. Then in February of 2021, A24 released the film into theaters and onto VOD platforms, where it racked up impressive notices and now some awards nods.

Steven Yeun himself has been quiet online since his Oscar nomination, though he told the LA Times he ate a Chia seed pancake to celebrate. Still, he has spent a considerable amount of time promoting Minari in the days and weeks leading up to and after the release of Lee Isaac Chung's film. Minari has clearly been a big focal point for the actor over the last year, and some of his former peers and co-workers shared their support after the big nomination came through, including The Walking Dead showrunner and famous co-stars such as Norman Reedus.

We'll have to wait and see if he ultimately takes home the major trophy, particularly since Chadwick Boseman landing a posthumous nod for Netflix's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom has been a big topic of conversation, but it an exciting development nonetheless.

While it was unclear just how things would go whenever Jeopardy! GOAT Ken Jennings stepped up to the host's podium to take over as guest judge, the game show champ definitely held his own as a temporary guest host. Clearly, the only truly worth successor to Alex Trebek would be a clone or android version of Trebek, but Jennings won over a lot of viewers during his six-week stint as Jeopardy!'s frontman. As Jennings noted on social media, however, that time has come to an end, and he'll now be followed by a line of future guest hosts on the way that includes NFL great Aaron Rodgers, news vet Katie Couric (against some viewers' wishes), and more.

Similar to the way he handled things when he first hit the Jeopardy! stage as a guest host, Ken Jennings gave a humble thanks to the fanbase for giving him a fair shot at holding down the fort following Alex Trebek's death in November 2020, during both normal rounds and extremely rare moments. Here's how Jennings bid fans farewell (at least for now) on Twitter:

For as snarky as some viewers can be, it's likely that few people have judged Jennings' hosting talents more than the man himself. He's fully aware of how challenging it can be to follow in the footsteps of a master, an icon, and someone who served as a hero of sorts. That's obviously a big part of why he continually gave respect to Alex Trebek on an episodic basis. And social media has been full of Jeopardy! fans who would be perfectly happy if the producers decided to forego all the upcoming guest hosts in order to give Jennings the full-time gig.

For instance, former Better Call Saul star and all-around amazing dude Michael McKean made it clear on Twitter that he wants Ken Jennings to stick around for the long haul, so who are we to deny the almighty David St. Hubbins? In his words:

Alas, Jeopardy! does definitely have a full line of follow-up guest judges set in stone for the coming months. The first person taking over after Jennings is Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune producer Mike Richards, who will be followed by Katie Couric, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Aaron Rodgers, Savannah Guthrie, Anderson Cooper, Mayim Bialik, Bill Whitaker, and Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Those dates likely would go into at least May, but everything is "To Be Announced" at the moment.

Ken Jennings posted a follow-up tweet making a Pokémon reference to the other hosts, but with the presumption that he wasn't calling everyone else a monster.

By all means, Ken Jennings does still have a shot at becoming Jeopardy!'s permanent replacement host after these rounds of guest celebs are complete. We'll just have to wait and see what happens next, unless the Clue Crew can offer some guidance.

There’s a lot more scrutiny on Jeopardy right now than there has been through much of its run as Alex Trebek made the show a household name and later settled into a comfortable career with longevity. Now, however, Trebek’s final series of episodes have run their course and a slew of other names are taking on the Jeopardy hosting gig, however briefly. So far that’s meant a lot of drama on the interwebs.

After some old tweets of Ken Jennings’ were dredged up ahead of his Jeopardy hosting stint, Katie Couric is now allegedly dealing with some drama related to the show and some comments she made on another TV appearance. In her case, it was political comments that have reportedly caused some red flags, as a source told Page Six, particularly given Jeopardy’s audience is often older and more conservative.

The news comes after Katie Couric chose to speak with Bill Maher about the GOP, giving her personal opinions on how she feels certain Congressmen and women are doing. She said during the Real Time With Bill Maher episode that the question is “how are we going to really almost deprogram these people who have signed up for the cult of Trump.” You can see her full remarks below.

At the time earlier this week, the comments about the GOP made headlines, but nothing was said about Jeopardy at the time. That is until someone, who is an unnamed source, noted that Katie Couric’s comments “have producers worried.” It’s true that Jeopardy! has always strived to be a clean game with no specific political ties, but the source also goes so far as to state they believe Couric’s comments have "ruled her out" of the permanent hosting gig. Currently, Jeopardy! has not yet aired any episodes with Katie Couric.

As noted prior, Ken Jennings faced similar scrutiny for jokes he had made previously on Twitter that did more than fall flat: they went a step further and offended people. The tweets had been in the past, but Jennings chose to come out and re-apologize for the stuff he’d said online, calling his moves “unartful” and “insensitive.” He explained that in his head he felt some of the things he was trying to put out into the universe were jokes, but they didn’t come across in the ways he had intended at all, also noting people should have been “(rightfully) offended.”

By the time Ken Jennings became the first host to pick up Alex Trebek’s mantle, people were more interested in talking about the tribute he paid to the late host on air and also the general way he led the game. The new source mentions there may be pressure on Katie Couric to apologize as well, but that "producers are expecting her to be a diva about it."

To quickly note: there has at least been some minor backlash against other guest hosts who will be appearing on Jeopardy in the past as well. The Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik once apologized for an op ed she wrote during the era of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and Me Too. NFL star Aaron Rodgers made headlines after he allegedly upset his parents publicly when he spoke out once about struggles with religion. Public personalities often have moments in the limelight that don’t spotlight them in their best moments, but that doesn’t necessarily make them unsuitable for keeping the game moving in an affable manner on Jeopardy.

We’ll have to wait and see who ultimately ends up hosting the show longterm, but Jeopardy still has a doozy of a lineup in the short term. As noted prior, Ken Jennings kicked off the new Jeopardy!. Coming up, Katie Couric, Mayim Bialik, Aaron Rodgers and 60 Minutes’ Bill Whittaker round out the current list.

Since Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek’s passing, the public has been wondering who will fill his tremendous footsteps. Next week, 74-time Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings is set to be the first in a series of guest hosts on the iconic game show. Of course, there's been the lingering question of who will follow suit after Jennings. Well, it was recently reported that a legendary newscaster will be the next guest host sometime after the Jeopardy! champ is finished with his hosting duties.

The LA Times reports that former talk show host and news anchor Katie Couric will be the next guest host, though the producers of Jeopardy! have not confirmed Katie Couric’s guest stint just yet. According to the report, Couric's stint will air sometime after Ken Jennings'. Given the newscaster’s public image and journalism background, she seems to be a good fit for the trivia-fueled game show.

Katie Couric’s Jeopardy! run will give fans, and the general public, a chance to see her on television once again. She has the distinction of hosting on three major networks – ABC, CBS and NBC. She hosted Today from 1991 to 2006 before becoming the first solo female anchor on The CBS Evening News. She later went on to host her own talk show from 2012 to 2014. Since leaving Yahoo! News in 2017, the newscaster has worked on several projects, including America Inside Out with Katie Couric for National Geographic and Unbelievable for Netflix.

Couric may be a breath of fresh air for producers after the fallout surrounding guest host Ken Jennings. While Ken Jennings seemed like the obvious choice to host after Alex Trebek’s passing, his tenure has already been marred by a bit controversy. His Twitter past came to haunt him when old, offensive tweets resurfaced, leading to an apology from the guest host.

With Katie Couric having landed a hosting spot, the door is now even more open for other notable faces to host Jeopardy!. Fans have petitioned for Star Trek’s LeVar Burton and actress Betty White (among others) to fill Alex Trebek’s shoes. Along with Ken Jennings, fans have also pushed for other Jeopardy! winners like James Holzhauer and Brad Rutter to host the series.

Despite good hosting prospects, fans and the Jeopardy! team have continued to pay tribute to Trebek. This has included some sweet behind-the-scenes stories from those who worked closely with him. Ryan Reynolds recently talked about working with the late host on one of his final episodes and honored him online.

Over the years, Katie Couric has built up a strong résumé and a has a firm reputation that helps her going into Jeopardy!. And maybe if things go right, the public might see more of her in syndication. Ken Jennings’ Jeopardy! episodes will start airing the week of January 11.

2020 has certainly been the year of surprise cast reunions, as a number of stars from classic films have been finding different reasons to come together to reflect on their projects. From Ghostbusters and Splash to Back to the Future and The Goonies, it seems like almost everyone is joining in on the fun trend. Now, the cast of Mean Girls has come together for a very fetch reunion to benefit a good cause.

Katie Couric re-assembled the cast of 2004’s Mean Girls on Instagram, including Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert, Jonathan Bennet, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Franzese, Rajiv Surendra, Ana Gasteyer, Tim Meadows and Tina Fey. The was perfect because it dropped on October 3 (Mean Girls Day), which is, of course, the day Aaron Samuels turned to Cady Heron to ask for the time.

But this isn’t the only reason that this October 3 was the right time for a Mean Girls reunion. It also arrives exactly one month before election day for the U.S. With this, the reunion was organized to help support voting. The event was done in conjunction with HeadCount and #GoodToVote, a campaign partners with influential voices to encourage voter registration and participation. The Plastics definitely weren’t the most considerate group in Mean Girls but, if there were any positive reason to bring back the actors who played them, this would be it.

During the reunion, the cast shared memories from their time working on the film and even revealed a secret or two. Lindsay Lohan, who played the lead role, explained that she was actually aiming to play the despicable (and victimizing) Regina George. This changed, however, when she realized just how many emotions the character would get to convey in the film:

Daniel Franzese, who most remember for playing the scene-stealing Damian, also looked back on performing “Beautiful” at the Winter Talent Show, and it turns out that scene was special to him for a sweet reason:

The cast definitely seemed to have a great time catching up and, 16 years later, each actor still seems to hold a special place for Mean Girls. Many fans still pay tribute to the high school movie every October 3 and, thanks to this long-running tradition, the film’s legacy should remain intact for years to come.

Apple TV+’s The Morning Show premiered last fall to somewhat of a mixed critical reception. It was initially compared to HBO’s The Newsroom and also critiqued for not fully diving into the issues it presented. However, the one thing many seemed to agree on is that the cast was excellent, which is good, because they were earning a whole lot of money to be on the show. Now, former Today show anchor Katie Couric says she has seen The Morning Show and has a few thoughts about the storyline and Jennifer Aniston’s portrayal in particular.

The Apple TV+ series was inspired by CNN correspondent Brian Stelter’s book, called Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV. The drama followed Jennifer Aniston’s Alex Levy and Steve Carrell’s Mitch Kessler, who was fired following sexual assault allegations that ultimately left Alex to fight for her job as anchor amidst the scandal. Katie Couric was recently asked about her impressions of the series, and while speaking on the podcast Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino, Couric said that Aniston did well, but that she was ultimately missing a key component in her portrayal. Here's what Couric had to say about her in the role:

That last part makes it sound like Katie Couric isn't exactly thrilled with all aspects of the series. Although she thinks Jennifer Aniston’s performance lacked an overall charisma, there is one storyline that the former anchor believes The Morning Show got right. Here's how she put it:

Katie Couric is, of course, referring to Mitch's workplace behavior on the show. Ironically, many believe that the Apple TV+ series parallels certain aspects of the scandal surrounding Katie Couric's former Today co-anchor Matt Lauer, who was fired from NBC for inappropriate workplace behavior. Lauer did respond to the sexual assault allegations after more women came out with claims against him, though Couric maintains that she "had no idea" these things were going on at the time.

The Morning Show was renewed for Season 2, but the series was in the midst of production when filming was suspended a little over a month ago, like so many other television and film productions. It's been a couple of months since Matt Lauer was fired from NBC's Today following a complaint about inappropriate workplace behavior of a sexual nature. In the time since, NBC announced it may not have been an "isolated incident" and other staff members on Today addressed the firing on the long-running show. However, most have not spoken out about their personal feelings on the matter, until this week when Matt Lauer's longtime co-worker Katie Couric decided to set the record straight on how she feels and what she says she knew about Lauer's behavior.

First and foremost, Katie Couric seems pretty blindsided about what happened, noting the reveals about Matt Lauer and the allegations of sexual misconduct that were levied at him were news to her. She seems heartbroken about the reports, noting,

In the statement, which she gave to People, Katie Couric stressed that Matt Lauer had always been a good person to work with in her experience, and that she was left in the dark about his behavior in regards to other individuals at the workplace. She also says she's still reeling from learning the news and spoke a little bit about how the other Today co-workers were handling what happened. She said:

Katie Couric left Today for other opportunities back in 2006, but she has returned to the NBC series on occasion for guest stints, most recently to celebrate Matt Lauer's 20th anniversary as an anchor.

Couric had previously said that she would talk about what happened with her co-worker when she was ready and able. That comment was made on social media back in December, just a short time after Matt Lauer's firing was announced. She also briefly spoke on the issue during the TCA winter press tour earlier this month, saying she "appreciated the opportunity to sit with this" before she ultimately made a public statement regarding what had happened.

As for Today, the show is doing fine without Matt Lauer. The show recently hired Hoda Kotb as Lauer's replacement, and actually saw an increase in its ratings after Lauer was fired. We'll let you know how things continue to fare with the NBC daytime show in the coming weeks.

Betty White isn't going anywhere! The iconic actress celebrates her 95th birthday on Tuesday, and is just as vibrant as ever.

To help celebrate 95 years, Betty White sat down with Katie Couric for a birthday interview with Yahoo! News. White, who was given the Guinness World Record three years back for having the longest television career of any female entertainer, reminisced on her favorite roles. She came to the conclusion that her gig as a Saturday Night Live host in 2010 was probably the most fun she had, although her popular Snickers ad from that same year was also up there.

Of course, Betty White doesn't have to reminisce about her acting career --- she's still working. Although her most recent regular role on TV Land's Hot in Cleveland came to an end in 2015, White appeared in the NBC comedy Crowded last year, and she's slated to reprise her role of forensic anthropologist Dr. Beth Mayer in an upcoming episode of Bones. White told Katie Couric that continuing her work in television has been the thing she's most proud of.

At the end of 2016, a year that turned out to be surprisingly lethal to so many beloved celebrities, many people were growing concerned about the iconic stars who are up there in age. Following the tragic news of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds' deaths in the last few days of the year, Betty White became a trending topic on Twitter, which initially scared her many fans until realizing it was because so many people were tweeting about being worried that the nonagenarian would become another victim of the vicious year. Fans even set up a GoFundMe campaign jokingly trying to raise money to protect her from 2016. But in the end, the year was no match for White.

Katie Couric has been in the public eye for a long time. In fact, by the time she started at CBS in 2006 she was certainly a big name in journalism---thanks to The Today Show--and she commanded a pretty impressive salary to go along with her skills and fame. However, a recent report indicates that Katie Couric actually turned down an even bigger amount of money in order to save the jobs of some of her coworkers. We're not talking a few bucks here or there, either. The reports indicate that she gave up $1 million dollars to avoid layoffs.

A new story coming from Powerhouse: The Untold Story of Hollywood's Creative Artists Agency (via Page Six) says that when Katie Couric was in her third year at CBS, the network was facing some difficulties and had plans to lay off staff. Allegedly, Katie Couric met with CBS News President Sean McManus about her salary, ultimately opting to take the pay cut in order to save the network from having to fire a slew of people who were vital to the staff.

The book states that both senior-level producers and newer employees were set to be kicked off the team thanks to the layoffs. We're only hearing about it years later because Couric decided not to tell anyone about her good Samaritan deed. In fact, the reports indicate that she simply asked that all of the money she was giving up would go directly to the staff and that she didn't want anyone to learn about what she did.

Katie Couric stuck with CBS until 2011, when she was put in an interesting situation again. In 2011, CBS News hit a low in the ratings, and despite her earlier sacrifice, the journalist was reportedly still making $15 million per year. She ultimately left the network for ABC and her own (short-lived) daytime talk show. More recently, she started a partnership that keeps her at ABC as a special contributor but also allows her to do work for Yahoo. Clearly, she's still doing pretty well for herself.

It's easy to scoff at Couric's good deed on account of how much her total salary was, but the truth is a majority of people in a position to make a large amount of money actually fight for every last dollar. One only needs to look at sports to learn that lesson. In an era in which most sports require a team to stay underneath a salary cap, a good percentage of players choose the maximum possible money, rather than leave some on the table for teammates. In the world of journalism, Katie Couric chose not to do that.

So, good for Katie Couric. Here's hoping she eventually finds her way back to her own series or another equally large career opportunity. She's definitely someone who deserves it.

It’s been a busy couple of months for The Today Show host Savannah Guthrie, who was married in March and announced a pregnancy in April. With the early morning host’s maternity leave on the horizon, NBC is doing a little research into who might be able to fill her role for a few months. As it turns out, frontrunners seem to include Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira.

It’s Couric that we are most excited about. The longtime host and journalist used to host Today for a period of years, ending her tenure in 2006. In the time since she has hopped networks and programs numerous times, working for CBS Evening News, 60 Minutes, ABC News and more before landing a gig as the host of her own daytime series, Katie. Unfortunately, low ratings led to a cancellation of that series, which will officially end its run in June. After the cancellation, Katie Couric signed a deal to work with Yahoo News. Normally, we would believe a lengthy return to NBC would be unlikely, but that’s a lot of career changes in a relatively short period of time, and if her schedule is open the idea is seeming less unlikely and more appealing by the minute.

The NY Post broke the news on Monday, noting that Katie Couric would be perfect on the show during Savannah Guthrie’s maternity leave. Not only does she have experience on Today, she also has great rapport with current host Matt Lauer. These reasons and more would make her a good fit for the gig.

However, Couric isn’t the only famous lady who might potentially take over the slot. NBC has also reportedly spoken with network veteran Meredith Vieira about the temporary position. Vieira recently made headlines whilst doing some work with NBC during the 2014 Winter Olympics, becoming the first female primetime Olympics host. Additionally, Meredith Vieira has a syndicated daytime talk show in the pipeline with NBC Universal called The Meredith Vieira Show. With her new show hitting television sets this fall, taking over for Guthrie could help her to gain some traction before her solo gig premieres.

Both Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira have the track record on the air and with Today to ensure an easy transition while Savannah Guthrie is out. However, no decisions have been made as of yet, and neither woman has even taken a leap as a frontrunner, according to a statement from an NBC spokeswoman.

Guthrie is currently only five months pregnant and is not expected to take time off until this summer, but if we had to venture a guess, we’d say to expect an official announcement sometime over the next couple of months.

Veteran TV personality Katie Couric once had an interesting date with another big TV journalist, Larry King. If you are doing the math, the two are pretty far apart in age, but at the time, the now 56-year-old Couric was dating left and right as a learning experience, and so when the now 79-year-old King asked, she said sure. Obviously, the date didn’t take.

Couric visited the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday, a set where incidentally, King has related a similar story about he and Couric’s infamous date. The date occurred in Washington D.C. when Couric was a young woman of thirty. It started off as a decent date at an Italian restaurant with extremely close seating. Couric reports King was driving her “home” when she realized they were going in the wrong direction—toward his apartment.

King tells the story a little differently. According to THR, his version to Jimmy Kimmel involved a slight roommate issue. In King's story, they couldn’t go to her place because of her roommate and nothing ended up happening. Honestly, whatever the true story is, it’s pretty weird that the two ever even went out on a date. I’m sure there have been stranger date match-ups in the history of the universe, but the curmudgeonly King and the affable Couric going out is pretty difficult to picture.

This week was a big one for daytime TV watchers. Katie Couric, Jeff Probst, and Ricki Lake all had shows premiering this week, following Steve Harvey’s lead last week. That’s four new daytime shows on the market to choose from, and, as many people guessed, Katie topped the pack, although not by the margin many people would think.

When Katie aired for the first time on Monday, the brand new morning show pulled in an impressive 2.7 rating, with a high percentage of those watchers coming from the 25-54 demographic. However, by week’s end, THR is reporting Couric’s ratings dropped a whopping 37%. By the end of the week, Katie was barely pulling ahead of The Steve Harvey Show.

I quite liked Katie and do think the move back to daytime TV was the right career call for the newswoman; however, I haven’t seen The Steve Harvey Show or any of her other competitive fodder to really compare in terms of quality. I do think we’re pretty early in the game to determine who will end up on top of the ratings heap for new programming. Currently, The Steve Harvey Show has a slight competitive edge because his show began airing last week. People have had two weeks to check the man’s show out and decide whether or not they want to invest time. The other new shows are still on less sure footing.

In fact, things might be looking most up for The Ricki Lake Show. THR also noted Lake’s new program was up 25% over the week. That still puts her ratings under a 1.0, but it certainly seems like she has the best potential to grow. The woman even lost out to the Jeff Probst Show, however, so I guess when you are down, there is no place to go but up.

Katie Couric’s new daytime talk show has been one of the most talked about daytime television stories for months now. Couric has always been great dealing with all types of soft news and interviews, and in September she will get to prove whether she can hold ground against daytime juggernauts like Ellen and Dr. Phil. In the last few months, Couric has been laying the groundwork for the new series, called Katie, even introducing a new web series that is covered under her overall deal with ABC. Now, the overt smiler has released the very first promo for ABC’s Katie, one that gives audiences a taste of what the journalist’s new show will cover.

If we get anything from the very first trailer for Katie, it is that the new show is going to be about what makes the average human tick. In the video, Couric is out and about in a populated park in New York City, posing for pictures and flashing that distractingly bright smile while she meets random people. Although the promo does not really give us an example of the stage setup or the type of content appearing on the show, I guess it serves as a good reminder that the 55-year-old is a woman of the people, or at least trying to be.

According to TV Line, Katie has already been cleared in 95% of markets. If you are excited about the upcoming endeavor you can catch Katie in General Hospital’s old timeslot, starting on September 10.

Katie Couric has been hyping up her new show for months. Ever since All My Children and One Life To Live were officially canceled by ABC, Couric was expected to earn a syndicated talk show to capably fill up a little of that space. Way back in June, ABC officially confirmed Couric was giving the opportunity a shot.

Although the show was given Generally Hospital’s slot at 3 p.m. (G.H. is expected to be bumped back an hour or two), audiences have really not gotten the opportunity to learn about what Couric's new show, Katie, will be like or when we can expect to see it air. That has all changed thanks to a tidbit from Katie executive producer Jeff Zucker, who announced today the series will begin its run on September 10. According to Deadline, Katie has also hired The Oprah Winfrey Show’s Joe Terry and Rachael Ray’s Kathy Samuels to help run daily production.

Zucker also released the logo, and while it is a bit sparkly and schnazzy, it looks a little dated next to the stark text daytime programs like Anderson and The Ellen DeGeneres Show favor.

As of November, Katie had already been picked up in 80% of markets and was selling some extremely pricey ad spaces. However, it is still nice to get a release date just so we know things are coming along ahead of schedule. Having Couric return to what she does best should be a boon for daytime TV watchers everywhere, although I would bet Ellen DeGeneres is a little less excited about the prospect.

I’m not certain if Katie Couric, her executive producers Jeff Zucker, or Disney-ABC has the biggest ego, but collectively those three are asking a lot from investors. This week, the Couric, Zucker, and ABC have gone around selling ad spots, and the numbers are relatively high for an as yet unproven program.

Couric’s new show, Katie, is set to hit the airwaves next fall, and the ad rates her group is asking for say a lot about her expected level of competence. New York Post is reporting advertisers are being asked to pay $50,000 for 30 seconds of advertising, which doesn’t seem to be too much at first glance. If you look at Super Bowl advertising, rates run at over 2 million for a 30 second spot. Plus, $50,000 is only half of the $100,000 Oprah asked for toward the end of her tenure.

However, it is a bit more than some of the current leading daytime talk shows. Ellen and Live With Regis And Kelly pull in between $35,000 to $40,000 dollars for advertising spots. As much as I liked Katie Couric on daytime TV, her track record in the evening hasn’t been nearly as strong. Plus, it’s been a long time since her daytime demographic has seen from her. Who knows if Katie will be able to pull from the same audience base as The Today Show? I’m truly excited for Katie and I hope Couric does well when she returns to day time; but, I will hasten to add the star shouldn’t spit big game unless she can back it up.

Well, it’s official. Verifying one of the worst kept secrets in the history of television, ABC has announced Katie Couric will in fact host a daytime talk show on its airwaves. The former anchor has long been questioned for leaving a job she was great at (The Today Show) for a job she was mediocre at (CBS Evening News). This new Oprah-like position will firmly place her back within her comfort zone and may actually prove to be a financial windfall.

In addition to receiving a yet-unreported salary from ABC, Couric will also own a percentage of the show itself, meaning if it’s popular, she’ll make out handsomely. The still-unnamed vehicle will be produced by the host’s former boss, Jeff Zucker, who was recently let go from NBC. Together, they’ll hammer out all the specifics and carve out a format to debut in September of 2012.

As for the timeslot, ABC has decided to give Couric General Hospital’s hour at 3 PM. What that entails for one of the last remaining daytime soap operas is anyone’s guess, but according to Deadline, network spokesmen have said they have no plans on cancelling the long-running melodrama. In all likelihood, one of ABC’s new daytime programs, either The Chew or The Revolution, will prove to be a bust, opening up a free hour to slot General Hospital back in.

Unwilling to completely steer from the hard news she’s broadcast for the last five years, Couric’s new contract will also allow her to contribute periodic reports for Nightline and other ABC News properties. Expect the frequency of those cameos to be inversely proportional to the ratings for her new show. If it crushes, she’ll likely focus more of her efforts on that. If it idles in mediocrity, expect those filings to become a regular thing.

Katie Couric’s been getting unbelievable press, since it was announced she was leaving the CBS Evening News lineup. The once daytime queen turned nighttime poor ratings maker is not suffering from options. The rumor mill has abounded with whispers over whether Couric will turn to another network or cable as her next gig, but those whispers have all amassed together to espouse Couric will return to daytime television. Her last daytime gig was on NBC’s The Today Show.

A return to daytime television might seem like a defeat, but is probably a victory for Couric, who relies heavily on human interest pieces in her reporting. This continuously made her last in the evening news rankings, but is completely suitable for daytime television, where her competition is all over human interest. Just look at what went on during episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

In fact, Couric might just get the coveted Oprah position. According to The Wall Street Journal, Couric will probably be headed to ABC, where she is expected to host a talk show. The traditional Oprah time spot has been spoken for in the fall, but with One Life To Live and All My Children's runs nearly finished, there will be some open time slots in the future. The official announcement is expected to appear as early as Monday.
