It’s hard to imagine anything being different in one of your favorite movies. For example, I can picture no one other than Zooey Deschanel playing Will Ferrell’s love interest in Elf, which is one of the best Christmas movies ever. However, there was a time when a different actress was set to play Jovie, and the New Girl star revealed who had the part before her.

Again, I can’t picture the Elf cast featuring anyone other than Ferrell, Deschanel, James Caan, Bob Newhart and co. However, during an episode of Call Her Daddy, Zooey Deschanel revealed that she originally wasn’t going to play Jovie. In fact, Katie Holmes had already been cast when she took a meeting about the movie with its director, Jon Favreau. Speaking about how all this went down, she said:

So, since she sincerely thought she wasn’t getting the part, nerves were out of the equation. Well, that ended up working really well in her favor. That’s because, as we know, Katie Holmes wasn’t in Elf due to scheduling conflicts, according to Deschanel, so she was able to step in. Continuing to speak about getting the part, she said:

First of all, I love that they were able to shape Deschanel’s role in this great 2000s movie to her. I mean, that singing scene in the bathroom is iconic! However, it does make me wonder who Jovie would have been if Katie Holmes had played her. Would she still sing? Would she have been blonde? What would her relationship with Buddy look like?

I’m sure she would have done a great job too. However, I’m very happy that the 500 Days of Summer actress ended up with the gig. Elf is easily one of Will Ferrell’s funniest movies, and it’s one of her’s too. She’s amazing in it, and her chemistry with the SNL alum is irresistible.

It served as a pivotal moment in Zooey Deschanel’s career, too. She was 21 when she got Elf; at that point, she’d been working consistently since 1999. However, there’s no question that this film was one of her first signature projects. After that, she starred in a bunch of movies, including 500 Days of Summer. Then, in 2011, she started working on the hit show New Girl.

Before stanning existed, you could probably call me a Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson) stan. The fictional man could do no wrong. He was my fictional dream boy. Joey (Katie Holmes) and Pacey were and are my favorite TV couple of all time. Dawson’s Creek was such a vital part of my adolescence that all my hopeless romantic beliefs and tendencies were probably born because of it. Therefore, everyone who knows me has been sending me photos of Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes filming their new movies.

I have been reliving my early tweens and teen years, swooning over this reunion. I will be waiting at the theater when these Happy Hours movies are officially released. Since we have absolutely no clue when that will happen, because they’re still being filmed, I decided to instead watch a few of my favorite Dawson’s Creek Joey and Pacey episodes.

They made me even more excited for these Jackson and Holmes reunion movies.

Rewatching A Few Of My Favorite Pacey And Joey Episodes Reminded Me How Electric Josh And Katie’s Chemistry Is

Some of the best Dawson’s Creek episodes are those with Pacey and Joey at the center. There are so many entertaining ones about them throughout the show’s six-year run. However, most of the peak Joey and Pacey episodes happen in Seasons 3 and 4. So you would expect me to watch one of those episodes, right? Correct, but I didn’t.

The first Pacey and Joey episode I rewatched was Dawson’s Creek Season 6, Episode 15, “Castaways.” I chose to watch this one because it was one of the rare episodes that completely focused on Pacey and Joey. It’s 42 minutes of just Jackson and Holmes' on-screen chemistry. I also remember being completely floored when they kissed during it. We hadn’t had romantic Joey and Pacey for nearly two devastating seasons.

I was delighted with this shocking moment. Additionally, “Castaways” feels reminiscent of classic romantic movies, where it’s all about highlighting the two leads. I immediately reverted to my teen ways, watching them again skirt around the undeniable chemistry. I was kicking my feet and twirling my hair.

Like many great romantic pairings, Jackson and Holmes just have it. There is just something — at least for me — magical about seeing them on screen together. They are two stars whose on-screen chemistry feels everlasting.

I Am Looking Forward To Seeing How That Translates 20+ Years Later

I will admit, I am a tiny bit nervous about seeing Holmes and Jackson on-screen together after 20+ years. What if the magic is gone? What if it feels forced? Teen me will never recover if they can’t recapture the spark in these movies. Nevertheless, I remain optimistic, because the photos from the set automatically give me that giddy teen feeling. Yes, I am way too old to be excited about this, yet here we are.

I have also been following Holmes and Jackson’s careers since Creek ended. Therefore, I know both have just become more talented with age. Therefore, I expect them not only to reignite their spark but to showcase some very compelling acting. These upcoming movies are romantic dramedy, so I am very excited to see what angst they bring to their performances.

These Dawson’s Creek Episodes Remind Me How Much I Miss Seeing Joshua Jackson As A Romantic Lead

Jackson has been in a few movies, but has mainly stayed within the television universe since Dawson’s Creek. I have seen almost every television show with him as the star. Almost every time, he does an amazing job convincing you that he’s madly in love with his co-star. I was glued to the Peter (Jackson) and Olivia (Anna Torv) romance on Fringe. Unfortunately, I wasn’t that into Max and Avery’s (Phillipa Soo) romance on the now-canceled Doctor Odyssey. In fact, this show made me a bit nostalgic to see Jackson return to his romantic leading man roots in a way I enjoyed.

I need to see Jackson deliver lines so beautifully poetic, just because he said them. I need to see the way Pacey looks at Joey return in this movie. I need Jackson to channel the romantic leading man he always was and is meant to be in these movies.

Romantic movies seem to now be geared towards a younger generation, so this probably won’t be the birth of Jackson’s romantic movie career, but it will serve as a reminder of how he used to deliver romantic-lead gold. It will also show us what we lost by not having him star in more romantic movies.

I Got A Big Hit Of Nostalgia Rewatching Them, And I’m Curious How These Movies Will Affect That Feeling

There have been a lot of great remakes and reboots, and a few of them have been duds. These movies or TV shows haven’t changed my opinions of the original, but they can anger me. For example, I am quite nervous about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer continuation series. There are so many things that can happen that potentially will make me mad that they couldn’t let the show rest in peace.

Fortunately, these movies are not Dawson’s Creek reboots or continuations. I can live in peace knowing the perfect Creek finale will remain untouched (which were also some of the Pacey and Joey episodes I rewatched). However, Jackson and Holmes on screen together has a nostalgic quality to it.

Therefore, watching them together could make me more nostalgic and rewatch even more Pacey and Joey episodes, or it could make me not want to see them on screen together ever again. The latter would probably never happen, even if they lost all of their previous magic. I am fully committed to the Happy Hours trilogy, whether it’s good or bad.

However, there is a chance these films will haunt me if they’re not actually good, or if it becomes like one of those heartbreaking breakup movies. These things could kill my nostalgia buzz.

The Dawson’s Creek Episodes Made Me Mentally Develop A Checklist Of What I Need To See In These Movies

I don’t know if this movie will just randomly include some Dawson’s Creek references and Easter Eggs, but that’s a possibility. I would love to see a few nods to the WB series. I also need Jackson’s character to give us an epic speech, similar to the one he delivers in the Creek finale.

I also need their characters dancing, some intense fighting, maybe a scene on a boat, them being parents, and the list goes on. These are some of the upcoming movies that I cannot wait to see. My Pacey and Joey-loving heart is finally getting a sort-of reunion all these decades later, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Dawson’s Creek may have ended over 20 years ago, but that doesn’t mean fans don’t still have a soft spot for the ensemble. The tight-knit Dawson’s Creek cast has remained close over the years, even reuniting for the 20th anniversary of the show, and discussions of a revival have been rumored. Whether or not a reboot is on the horizon is still in question; however, Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson are finding a way to work together regardless. That became even clearer as they were seen on set together for their new project, and there's a lot to be excited about.

Recent photos showed the duo on the set of their new movie, Happy Hours, which is filming in New York City. The two looked like they were having a great time talking and laughing like no time had passed. They were both either really into their characters or just enjoying their time together, as it’s been a while since the two have collaborated in such a capacity. It seems like the chemistry never left them, and they are channeling this energy into their upcoming film. You can see the behind-the-scenes moment below:

What I love about these photos is how happy they both look. The camera doesn’t appear to be rolling, so this likely took place during some actor talk between scenes, or it's just two people catching up after not working together for a number of years. Actors often talk about what a pleasure it is to work with your friends, and this pleasure is evident based on the picture. I can’t wait to see what Happy Hours has in store for Dawson’s Creek fans, and if there will be any nods to their previous collaboration that made both of them stars.

According to Deadline, Happy Hours is actually set to become a trilogy, with Holmes expected to write, direct, and star in all three films. The movies will follow a couple, played by Jackson and Holmes, who navigate their relationship while also dealing with life’s challenges. The story will also follow the young lovers who reconnect as adults through a shared desire to pursue something more together. Along with the Dawson’s Creek alumni, the cast will also include Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker and Crazy Rich Asians’ Constance Wu.

While it’s not a Dawson’s Creek revival (for now), it’s still exciting to see these stars come back together.

They have both been busy since the show ended, with Holmes acting in Batman Begins, Logan Lucky, and Ray Donovan, and Jackson taking on popular shows like Doctor Odyssey, The Fringe, and The Affair.

With Holmes’s recent venture into indie filmmaking, it’s exciting to see some of her friends singing on to her projects and supporting her while she embarks on her behind-the-camera journey. And honestly, I can’t think of a better actor by her side than Joshua Jackson.

Happy Hours is still in production, so it may be a while until we both see these two reunite on the big screen. In the meantime, fans can revisit Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson in Dawson’s Creek, which is currently available to stream for those with a Hulu subscription. Poker Face Season 2 has finally hit Peacock, and while we’ve thus far only been treated to the first three episodes, they feature some A+ guest stars. Right off the bat, we have Cynthia Erivo playing a whopping five different characters, and that story is followed by Giancarlo Esposito and Katie Holmes sharing the stage. This is Holmes’ first live-action TV show appearance since 2017, and oh boy, it's a bonkers one. According to the showrunner, this was the intention, as he wanted to show a side of Katie Holmes we’ve “never seen from her before.”

The episode stars Katie Holmes as the wife of a funeral home owner/director who is fed up with her sheltered, conservative life of applying makeup to the deceased. Taken by the glitz and glamour of filmmaking as a movie is filmed on the mortuary's property, she starts to catch up on the social life she’s been deprived of with a childlike enthusiasm – and the odd contrast makes for a performance unlike anything we’ve ever seen from Holmes. I recently caught up with Season 2 showrunner Tony Tost to talk all things Poker Face, and when the subject of Katie Holmes came up, he told us that this was exactly the intention:

Katie Holmes rose to fame on TV’s Dawson’s Creek, and given that it doesn’t feel like the fabled revival is coming anytime soon, it’s fun to see her back on the small screen via streaming. As Tony Tost said, we haven’t seen her like this before, and it specifically reminded me of the hype surrounding Parker Posey in The White Lotus – a casting choice that has been lauded as “brilliant.” Tost agreed, saying,

When Dawson Shamed Jen For Her Romantic Past

In the first season, Dawson dates — and deifies — the mysterious new girl in town Jen Lindley (played by future four-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams, who would ironically go on to play Steven Spielberg's mother). However, when he finds out that his new girlfriend has been sexually active since age 12, Dawson's reaction is less than understanding and he harshly ridicules Jen for her past experiences.

When He Used Mary Beth To Try To Make Jen Jealous

Though Dawson regularly posits himself as a self-proclaimed "nice guy" throughout the six-season series, he does frequently behave quite callously to those he's dating. Case in point: taking innocent Mary Beth (Megahn Perry) out in the season one episode titled "Double Date," all as a ruse to get a reaction out of his on-again-off-again love interest, Jen Lindley.

When He Read Joey's Diary Without Her Permission

Dawson can proclaim all he wants that he and Joey are soulmates, but that still doesn't give him the right to read Joey's personal diary without her knowledge in the season 2 episode "Crossroads". Even worse is that he believes he's in the right to be angry that she derided his talent as an amateur filmmaker but remains unapologetic about the fact that he violated her privacy.

When He Guilted Joey For Her Summer Plans Abroad

Given her penchant for the arts, it makes sense that Joey would want to spend a summer in the famously beautiful and cinematic city of Paris. However, when she relays such plans to Dawson at the end of the first season, he selfishly guilts her about how hard the distance would be for him, instead of thinking of how great it would be for her. Ultimately, she forgoes her French plans to be near Dawson and stays in Capeside for the summer. (Thankfully, she would eventually see the Eiffel Tower in season 6.)

When He Filmed His and Jen's First Kiss Without Her Knowledge

Dawson famously wants to be a director like Spielberg when he grows up and frequently films little student movies and such throughout Dawson's Creek. However, one of his creepier screen projects was in the third episode of the first season, when he set up a camera to secretly record his first kiss with crush Jen in tribute to all of the famous movie smooches in film history. Only, life isn't a movie, Dawson!

When He Broke Up With Natasha Over Voicemail After Cheating On Her

In the sixth season of Dawson's Creek, Dawson has a fling with an actress named Natasha Kelly (Bianca Kajlich) during his summer working as an assistant director in Los Angeles. However, things get very complicated when he returns to Capeside and rekindles, ahem, physically with Joey. After the longtime friends finally sleep together, Dawson phones Natasha the morning after and brutally dumps her via answering machine.

When He Accused Jack of "Stealing" Joey From Him

In the season two episode "Unchartered Waters,” Dawson unfairly snipes at Jack McPhee (Kerr Smith) that he stole Joey from him. However, in reality, Joey actually broke up with Dawson well before she and Jack got together because she needed space from their relationship. Jack wisely reminds Dawson of that important fact, and that Joey is far too smart to be "stolen" by any boy.

When Dawson Entered That Boat Race To Spite Pacey

Saying that Dawson handled the fact that his beloved Joey was dating his best friend Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson) very poorly is an understatement. In the third season, he even decides to enter a local sailing competition at the last minute under the guise of beating Pacey and winning Joey back. Of course, that misguided scheme is a big old fail, with Dawson nearly crashing his boat into Pacey's vessel and getting disqualified from the regatta.

When Het Got Too Drunk And Ruined His Surprise Birthday Party

In the sixteenth episode of season 2, fittingly entitled "Be Careful What You Wish For," Joey sweetly plans a surprise party for Dawson's big 16th birthday at the Leery residence. The only problem is that Dawson and Andie (Meredith Monroe) decide to get rowdy at a nightclub beforehand and get absolutely zonked — while underage! — on rum and cokes. When he finally arrives at the surprise party, he's acting plenty foolish, falling face-first into his birthday cake and spending the rest of the night vomiting in the bathroom alongside Andie.

When He Publicly Aired His Parents' Dirty Laundry At His Birthday Party

During a drunken tirade at his 16th birthday in season 2, Dawson takes the time usually reserved for making a wish and blowing out his candles to instead ruthlessly rant about his parents, telling a party full of people about how his mom Gail (Mary-Margaret Humes) slept with her co-anchor, how his dad Mitch (John Wesley Shipp) doesn't have a job, and so on. It goes without saying that it brings the shindig to quite a halt.

When He Guilted Joey Into Turning Her Father Over to the Cops

In season 2, Dawson sees that Joey's father Mike Potter (Gareth Williams) — who had previously been in prison for drug trafficking — has sadly resumed his drug-dealing activities. And instead of quietly supporting Joey and letting her handle that strained family situation on her own, Dawson forces Joey to wear a wire and get a confession implicating her dad. The plan works but is distressing not only for Joey, who tells Dawson she will never forgive him for forcing her decision, but also for actor James Van Der Beek, who cites the episode as the moment when Dawson's Creek went off the rails.

When Dawson Practiced Kissing On A Mannequin In Front Of His Dad

Okay, sure, there's coming-of-age sweetness throughout the iconic teen drama series Dawson's Creek, especially where first romances and such are concerned. But an early scene where Dawson is given smooching pointers by his dad, all while practicing said moves on a mannequin doll fashioned to look like his female best friend Joey is definitely less cute and more creepy.

When He Demeaned Pacey In Front of Everyone At His Birthday Party

The love triangle between Dawson, Joey and Pacey meant that there was a lot of animosity between the two boys throughout the series, but even before Joey and Pacey got together, Dawson demeaned his supposed best friend on the regular. An especially egregious example is Dawson's boorishly drunken rant at his 16th birthday party in season 2, which saw the birthday boy suggest that Pacey's only purpose is to make Dawson feel better about himself in comparison. Even worse, we never actually saw him apologize for that slight!

When He Prodded Joey About Her Physical Relationship With Jack

In the early seasons of Dawson's Creek, Dawson had a bit of an obsession with the status of Joey's virginity. One such instance of the teen butting his nose into his friend's business is in a season 2 episode where he publicly questioned Joey about whether she had slept with Jack and lied about sleeping with Jen just to make Joey jealous. Jen rightly dubbed the whole thing a "pathetic little display."

When He Insulted A Film Critic Who Was Reviewing His Movie

Dawson's dreams of being one of the film industry's great directors was a common thread through the show's six seasons. However, he didn't always make things easy for himself — in the season 5 episode "Cigarette Burns," Dawson insults Amy Lloyd (Meredith Salenger), a film critic tasked with reviewing a movie he made, even telling the writer that she has bad taste in films. We don't think Spielberg behaves that way, Leery!

When He Made Fun Of Jack's Coming Out Journey

With Jack McPhee, Kerr Smith played one of TV's great queer characters — he even was the first man to have an on-screen gay kiss on American television. As part of that onscreen LGBTQ+ representation, Smith's character navigated the ups and downs of his coming out journey in the back-half of season 2, a self-discovery that Dawson drunkenly mocked at his 16th birthday. "Tonight, starring in his very own version of In & Out," Dawson taunted him. "He's in, he's out, he's in, he's out! Nice hair by the way." He might've been joking but it was clearly not funny.

When He Dated Pacey's Older Sister After Giving Him a Hard Time About Joey

For giving Pacey such a hard time about dating his best friend Joey, Dawson didn't seem to see any problem with romancing Pacey's own sister Gretchen (played by NCIS star Sasha Alexander) for much of his senior year. Not to mention there's a not insignificant age difference between the 17-year-old Dawson and the 21-year-old Gretchen.

When Dawson Ruined Joey's Time At The Anti-Prom

At the end of season 3, the Capeside gang throws an "Anti-Prom" in support of the newly out Jack, but Dawson instead takes it as an opportunity to parade Joey around as his date to make Pacey jealous. After seeing Joey and Pacey slow dance — in a sweet and romantic scene that will make you believe in love again — Dawson melodramatically storms out of the event and unfairly yells at Joey that the only reason he suggested "this whole stupid alternative prom" wasn't about Jack at all but rather her. Manipulative!

When He Was Upset That Joey Moved On With Pacey, Even Though He Rejected Her First

The end of season 3 saw the lifelong friendships of Dawson Leer, Joey Potter and Pacey Witter implode when Joey and Pacey started developing romantic feelings for each other. That development really shouldn't have been a problem for Dawson at all, since he previously turned down Joey's offer to rekindle their own romance because he didn't want to ruin their friendship, plus he had specifically asked Pacey to look after the young Miss Potter in the first place.

When He Overreacted About His Student Film And Swore Off Movies Forever

Teenage hormones are a famously fussy phenomenon, but even so, Dawson Leery always had quite the penchant for melodrama. One textbook example is in season 3 after he enters his Blair Witch rip-off student film into a film festival and gets rightly roasted by the other filmmakers in contention. After dismissing the constructive criticism of those “art house snobs," he goes home, clears his walls of all of his beloved movie posters and then drops out of film class. Overreaction much?

When He Didn't Tell Joey He Had a Girlfriend Before They Slept Together

It was six long seasons before Dawson and Joey consummated their on-and-off again relationship, but the slow-burn moment was pretty much ruined when Joey catches a girl calling Dawson on his cell phone the morning after. Turns out, the girl is an actress he had been seeing up until that very morning. "I would rather you weren't involved with someone when we finally sleep together...you should have told me, before!" Joey roars in the season 6 episode "The Song Remains The Same," only for Dawson to respond that she's blowing things out of proportion.

When He Clashed With The Director and Got Fired on His First Day Of Work

Sure, British director Todd Carr (Hal Ozsan) was no picnic to work for, what with his hot temper and no filter, but given that Dawson was only a mere intern working at a Hollywood film studio for the very first time, the young Leery lad probably shouldn't have told his boss that he's basically a hack who only makes bad movies. Unsurprisingly, Dawson was promptly fired and even dropped out of film school because of the embarrassing incident.

When He Reacted Badly To His Mom's Pregnancy

The introduction of a new baby into a family can conjure up feelings of jealousy in a soon-to-be sibling, but usually not when that sibling is a fully-grown 18-year-old. In the season 4 episode "The Family Way," Dawson doesn't take well to the news that his parents are expecting a baby, sulking around the house and offering a very belated — and begrudged congratulations — to Gail and Mitch. Things get worse when Gail reveals that she's considering an abortion, given her age and the family's financial troubles, which causes Dawson to react horribly instead of supporting his mother in her personal decision.

When He Broke Pacey's Nose By Throwing A Basketball At His Face

We'll play devil's advocate here: Pacey was definitely out of line telling Jen that Dawson's childhood nickname was Oompa Loompa and for trying to embarrass Dawson in front of an entire squad of cheerleaders in the season 1 episode "Detention." But that doesn't mean Dawson should have ever resorted to violence, especially not chucking a basketball directly at his best friend's face and breaking his nose. Unsurprisingly, that courtside fight lands both boys in detention.

When He Didn't Listen When Joey Said She Was Uncomfortable Sharing a Bed

For much of their childhood friendship, Joey would spend the night over at the Leery residence and share a bed with her good buddy Dawson. However, what with the changes that come with puberty and such, Miss Potter reveals in Dawson's Creek season 1 that she's no longer comfortable being bunkmates with her boy bestie. "Things change, Dawson. Evolve!" she tells him. However, Dawson downplays her concerns and forces her to spend the night even though she's clearly not feeling totally okay with it. Plus, he hogs the bed!

When He Immediately Went Against His Film Teacher's Rules

In season 1, aspiring director Dawson wanted to take a film class at the fictional Capeside High, but the underclassman was deemed too young. However, after some earnest begging from the student, the school's film teacher Mr. Gold (Mitchell Laurance) decides to let him audit the class, so long as he promises not to participate since he's not officially enrolled. Cut to Dawson's very first film class and what does he do? He immediately throws passive observation out the window and smugly inserts comments and questions into the film class.

When He Cringingly Sang The Blues About His Romantic Troubles

As part of Dawson's alcohol-fueled 16th birthday celebrations, he and Andie decide to throw themselves into a night of unabashed and underage recklessness, which includes taking the stage at a jazz club to awkwardly sing "the blues." Such choice lyrics include: "My name is Dawson Leery, I'm feeling kinda weary / Today is my birthday, and you all look a little blurry / The girl that I cared for left me and ran away / straight into the arms of a guy who turned out to be gay." Better stick to filmmaking, Dawson!

When He Tempted His Friends With A Stolen Copy Of The PSAT Test

In the season 3 episode "None of the Above," Dawson is far from the only student tempted to cheat when the Capeside gang gets their hands on an advance copy of the PSAT test, even veritable goody-two-shoes like Joey and Andie consider it. However, he was the one who brought the stolen test to his friends in the first place — in school, no less! — after getting the test from his bad-girl love interest Eve Whitman (Brittany Daniel).

When He Wrecked His Dad's Boat While Hooking Up With Eve

Dawson's season 3 romance with Eve revealed a wild, and irresponsible, side of the usually straightlaced character. While smooching with the mysterious blonde during a cruise on his dad Mitch's boat, Dawson gets so distracted that the boat crashes into a dock, warranting $3,000 worth of repairs. As if that isn't bad enough, he decides to have a rowdy house party with strippers and charge $20 a pop for attendees to drum up the cash, all while his parents are out of town. Of course, Mitch comes home early and is not happy about the situation.

When He Spent His Professional Career Stuck In His High School Days

Sure, by the series finale of Dawson's Creek, our titular lead finally got his happy ending as a director working in Hollywood, one with apparently enough notoriety to snag a meeting with the one and only Steven Spielberg. However, it's revealed that Dawson isn't working on acclaimed feature films like his filmmaking hero — instead, he's working on a TV show, The Creek, about his relationship with Joey and their experiences in Capeside. "Write what you know" is one thing, but "obsess over your past" is a different thing altogether.

When He Didn't Take Joey's Artistic Talents Seriously

"Dawson, why is it that your obsession with movies is your life passion, but my interest in art is just a hobby?" Joey rightly questions Dawson early on in season 2. Indeed, Dawson had regularly diminished Joey's sketches and artistic pursuits as a mere pastime all the while expecting his best friend-slash-love interest to take his short films and student projects seriously. It's no surprise, then, that when Pacey iconically bought Joey a wall as a canvas to pursue her art, she — and we — swooned!

When Dawson Made This Crazy Face As He Cried

It's the face that launched a thousand hilarious memes: when Dawson finally realized that Joey and Pacey were endgame in season 3, he sadly had to come to terms with his broken heart over losing Joey. And he did so, but not before unleashing one of the most memorable crying faces in TV history. The cry-face was so iconically awful that Van Der Beek's own Dawson's Creek co-star Joshua Jackson jokingly offered up his own small-screen sob in tribute.

News broke this week that Stargate SG-1 and Dawson’s Creek’s Obi Ndefo had died at age 51. It was his sister who first shared the news, sharing in a message that her beloved “younger” brother had passed away years after a 2019 car accident had left him without both of his legs.

Nkem Ndefo shared a picture of her brother on Facebook and wrote a message, though cause of death has not been disclosed at this time.

My first recollection of Obi Ndefo was in Stargate SG-1 where he played Rak-nor, a member of the Free Jaffa Nation with connections to main character Teal’c. I first watched the series on DVD in the early aughts, but more recently the actor had come back onto my radar after I started binge-watching Dawson’s Creek.

For Holmes, though, the connections were not loose. Ndefo was an integral part of her growing up experience. He played a reasonably large role in the first season of the hit teen drama (after replacing George Gaffney, who starred in the Dawson's Creek pilot) when Holmes was still a teenager. He would have had scenes with her quite often as his character was dating Joey’s sister on the series, Bessie Potter. (The two were in an interracial relationship that was seen as taboo by some characters on the series at the time.)

Holmes took to her Stories to recall her time working with Obi Ndefo, then a young Yale graduate taking on his most prominent TV role at that time. (He’d later appear in six episodes of Stargate SG-1 and in several guest roles on shows like NCIS: LA, The West Wing and NYPD Blue). Holmes called her former co-star “wonderful,” also sharing a picture from the show on her Instagram account.

Other series lead Mary-Margaret Humes (who played Dawson's mom Gail) also paid tribute to the actor on Instagram, calling him a part of her “TV family.” She also wrote:

A few years back, Ndefo had gotten into a car accident that led to the loss of both of his legs. The accident was a DUI hit and run outside of Erewhon Market in Los Angeles where he'd been shopping for groceries following a yoga class. A drunk driver hit him while he was standing beside his vehicle and a bystander stayed with him until paramedics arrived, according to an NBC report at the time.

He kept himself going with positive mantras at the time, telling news outlets, "I can do this. And I want to keep being a contributor to the world," and later said he held no anger over the incident. He founded the Arts Alliance for Humanity in the Los Angeles area and worked for many years in the Los Angeles community, including his acting stints.

Katie Holmes has been a fashion trendsetter since she hit the Hollywood scene with Dawson’s Creek. She’s had a number of iconic celebrity fashion moments over the years, many of which are coming back as 90’s and Y2K inspired looks are becoming cool again. Holmes put a mini dress over jeans and caused quite the stir a while back, as it was something that hadn’t been popular since the early 2000s. Yet, she totally rocked it. Now she’s embracing another controversial denim look, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. 

Barrel jeans have been the denim of the moment for a hot minute, and Katie Holmes was seen out in them. The jean style is different from the more popular mom-jean, which has a high, hip hugging waist that is baggy or straight leg the rest of the way down. Barrel jeans take baggy to a whole new level, as the leg part of the jean extends wide beyond the thigh and comes to a taper near the ankle. The trend caught on with Gen Z and Gen Alpha, and it quickly became common to see these odd shaped pants on teenagers around the internet, and now on the actress, per InStyle. 

If you're into the look, lots of major brands are carrying the denim now. 

The jeans range from a large horseshoe shape to something a little more subtle. The revolt against skinny jeans is very real, and fashion has been going in a completely different direction for a while now. While many millennials and Gen-Xers are holding on to their skinny jeans with dear life, the Batman Begins actress is embracing the more youthful style.

She’s giving the baggy denim a real shot, and has never really been afraid to experiment with her fashion. These pants are hard to pull off, but I think she totally rocks it. She has a teenage daughter in Suri Cruise, so maybe she’s giving her mom fashion advice and keeping her hip. 

Katie Holmes isn’t the only one who has been experimenting with denim fashion as of recently. Sports Illustrated’s Paulina Porizkova has posted pictures of herself rocking sweatpants that look exactly like jeans to remain cozy while also fashionable around the house, and Jenna Ortega embraced the denim maxi skirt trend during Paris Fashion Week. Even if the style of jeans is constantly changing, actual denim never seems to go out of style and always is a chic casual fit. 

Who knows how long barrel jeans will stick around? This might be one of those microtrends that we will look back on in 10 years and wonder “what was thinking?” Or, the denim style could be here to stay, and this is just the beginning of the hottest streetwear look. Whatever the fate of barrel jeans is, I love that Holmes is making it work. She remains cool and youthful even as trends change, and always knows how to keep people talking.

Poker Face, which debuted on Peacock (one of the best streaming services) back in 2023, proved to be one of the best shows of the year. The mystery series, which comes from the mind of creator Rian Johnson and stars fellow EP Natasha Lyonne in the lead role, was praised for its wit, charm and compelling stories. What fans also enjoyed was the star-studded roster of actors that spanned those first 10 episodes. Anyone who’s been wondering if Season 2, which is currently in production, will include high-profile talent will be happy to know that will be the case. It’s been reported that Giancarlo Esposito, Katie Holmes and a couple of other talented stars will be joining the fray, and I’m too pumped!

News of the new cast additions comes by way of Variety, which listed a total of four stars that have been tapped for the series. In addition to Giancarlo Esposito and Katie Holmes, Kumail Nanjiani and Gaby Hoffmann will appear as well. The quartet’s exact roles were not revealed by the news outlet, which isn’t all that surprising. And, quite frankly, I’m not too concerned. That’s because I’m just pleased to know that these four stars will play roles in the continuing adventures of one Charlie Cale. 

All of these stars have some impressive credits to their names. Katie Holmes is, of course, a veteran actress whose work includes Disturbing Behavior, Batman Begins and Ray Donovan. Kumail Nanjiani’s star has risen in recent years, thanks to starring roles in The Big Sick, Silicon Valley, Eternals, Welcome to Chippendales and more. Meanwhile, seasoned performer Gaby Hoffman has Transparent, Girls, C’mon C’mon and Winning Time: The Rise of the Los Angeles Lakers on her resume. And, of course, Giancarlo Esposito is seemingly snatching up roles here and there in various mediums. When it comes to TV, he’s arguably most famous for Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Mandalorian and The Boys. So, yeah, none of these stars are slouches.

The first 10 episodes of Poker Face (which we’ve ranked) weren’t lacking when it came to talent as previously alluded to. Joining Natasha Lyonne for that string of installments were Judith Light, Nick Nolte, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Clea DuVall, Ron Perlman, Lil Rel Howery and more. What’s most impressive about the slate of stars is that each one perfectly slid into their role, which is a testament to the casting directors. It’s for that reason that I’m confident that these newcomers will be well served. 

Right now, plot details on the second season are slim, though the overall premise will likely remain intact. Each episode sees Charlie Cale, who’s on the run from the mob, crossing paths with different people. In the process of doing so, she finds herself tangled in mysteries, which she has a knack for solving due to her uncanny ability to detect when someone is lying. It may seem like a quirky premise, but I can’t recommend this show enough to Peacock subscribers.

The thought of these stars appearing on the hit show is just so exciting, and I have no doubt that each of them will play their respective roles to perfection. Here’s hoping that they all get to chew a bit of scenery (and that the second season gets here soon).

It takes some time for a style to go from a fashion choice to a fashion trend. Katie Holmes knows this well, as she nearly broke the Internet by wearing a dress over a pair of jeans a couple of years ago in a nod back to Y2K fashion trends. But that was a couple of years ago, and in the time since wearing a skirt or dress over pants has happened periodically, but it hasn’t full-on revved up until more recently. 

It’s a style that’s nearly as controversial as the pants-free movement, though it (generally) requires way more articles of clothing, and recently Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber were both seen trying out the layered style.

Gigi Hadid Followed In Katie Holmes' Footsteps With Her  Own Look

Gigi Hadid did it in a more traditional route, donning a pair of jeans and throwing on a long, flowy shirt dress. She looks perfectly styled in this outfit from May, and her look could have been construed as a long cardigan (though it is a dress), so it wasn’t as outside-the-box as some of the dress-over-jeans takes have been. 

Still, it’s not a look that has greatly endeared itself to all internet users. Katie Holmes’ dress over jeans, for example, went so viral (in a bad way) that she later had to address the fashion moment, stating that women shouldn’t be roasting each others’ fashion choices and should instead by supporting one another, noting (as part of a longer statement): 

Hadid obviously didn’t pair jeans with a strapless dress like Holmes did, instead choosing the Showtime dress from her own knitwear line, Guest in Residence. It retails for $445 dollars. 

Kaia Gerber Went A Step Further And Wore A Skirt Over Pants

Now, Bottoms star Kaia Gerber also has her own take on the fashion trend and she took it a step further, rocking a skirt over pants. The skirt was built-in in this case, though, as she wore a pair of paints with a skirt over them from the brand Paloma. The wool pants have an overlapping mini and come in brown or khaki. They cost a cool $287. 

You can see the full look over at our sister site Marie Claire. Meanwhile the fashion choice has started to be commented on in places like Reddit with a lot of individuals calling it "frumpy" and "bulky," though some do seem to dig it. It's certainly earned a wide variety of takes, however. 

What I will say about the dress/skirt over pants trend is that doubtless it’s a heckuva lot more comfortable than going pants-free, as stars like Megan Fox have done wearing just a blazer, etc. Or like Halle Berry did when she recycled a top to go pants-free for New Year's Eve. It’s also a lot more comfortable than the sheer fashion  trend that’s dominated the red carpets even at the Met Gala recently too. 

But doing it the right way can be really tricky, making the style way more controversial than it might have been otherwise. If you are someone who really dislikes the layers, there is a silver lining. Right now the look still seems to be casual fare and not making it’s way to major Hollywood events, but I suppose that could always change.

There was a time when music videos were as important as the radio in promoting the hottest artists and songs of the day. Back in the '80s and '90s, MTV was one of the most powerful cultural forces in the country, and that was reflected in how many stars you can spot in videos from the day. 

Sometimes, they were already huge stars, like Robin Williams and Chevy Chase, other times, they were actors looking to get their break and now, years later, we can marvel at their humble beginnings. This is a list of famous people in videos from the zenith of MTV highlights both.

Alicia Silverstone - "Cryin'"

Alicia Silverstone first got famous for starring in videos, specifically Aerosmith videos. The Clueless star appeared in three videos for the Boston rockers, the first for the song "Cryin'", then later showing up in the videos for "Amazing," alongside Dazed & Confused cast member Jason London. Silverstone's final appearance, and maybe the most famous video, was for the song "Crazy," alongside Steven Tyler's daughter, Liv Tyler. 

Courteney Cox - "Dancing In The Dark"

One of the most famous examples of a star getting her first break in a music video is, of course, Friends star Courteney Cox in the video for Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark." The video, which came out in 1984, was directed by Brian De Palma and, according to Cox, she was one of several women Springsteen could have picked out of the audience, and it was random that he chose her. What kismit! 

Cindy Crawford - "Freedom '90"

Director David Fincher, who has had quite an amazing career in film, started in music videos. One of those videos, George Michaels' "Freedom '90," was challenging because Michaels told Fincher he wasn't going to appear in the video. Fincher decided to cast a bevy of famous supermodels to lip-sync the song, including Cindy Crawford in a bathtub. 

Eva Mendes - "Miami"

In 1998, a young actress from Miami was cast in a video for the Will Smith song, "Miami." Eva Mendes had starred in one direct-to-video movie at that point and was that actress. It would be another three years before her breakout role in Training Day. It's a brief moment in the video, as she drove her convertible next to Smith's on the causeway to Miami Beach.

In 1993, Janet Jackson was on top of the world. Her fifth album, janet. was another huge hit, selling millions of copies, partly on the strength of the single, "That's the Way Love Goes." Little did anyone know at the time that one of the extras in the video would go on to a career that eclipsed even Jackson's, a then-unknown Jennifer Lopez. 

Matt LeBlanc - "Miracle"

Bon Jovi's "Miracle" is, let's be frank, not the New Jersey legends' best work. One thing they did get right was the casting for the video. Matt LeBlanc was a young actor and model just starting out on a career, so while his job is really only to look good in this video, he certainly does. It would be a few more years before America was introduced to his comedic chops too. 

Hugh Laurie - "Walking On Broken Glass"

By the time Hugh Laurie appeared in the video for Annie Lennox's "Walking on Broken Glass" in 1992, he was already very famous in the UK. It would be a few more years until the legendary TV show House would debut in the US, making Laurie a household name on both sides of the pond. John Malkovich also stars in the video, reminding fans of his role in Dangerous Liaisons. 

Angelina Jolie - "Wondering"

Angelina Jolie was a model in Hollywood from her teen years on, so it's no wonder she would have a few videos of her resume, including The Rolling Stones' video for "Has Anybody Seen My Baby," but it is surprising to see her in a video for the Athens, GA-based jam band Widespread Panic's song "Wondering" from 1993. Jolie also appears on the cover of the band's album Everyday, which includes "Wondering."

Zooey Deschanel - "She's Got Issues"

Zooey Deschanel is as successful in music, with her duo She & Him as she is on the big screen, so of course she has an early credit in a music video. Deschanel appears with fiery red hair in the video for "She's Got Issues" by The Offspring. 

Naomi Campbell - "Is This Love"

Bob Marley died over four decades ago, but his legacy is as big as ever, with the release of the biopic One Love in 2024. Back in the day, the reggae superstar filmed a video in London for his song "Is This Love" featuring a couple of local kids, including a 7-year-old Naomi Campbell!  

Macaulay Culkin - "Black Or White"

Michael Jackson redefined what a music video could be with "Thriller" and after that, he often released short films that were much more than just a song, and often they had big stars in them. For "Black or White" in 1991, MJ brought in Macaulay Culkin and George Wendt to play father and son, for example. 

Christina Hendricks - "One Hit Wonder"

Long before Christina Hendricks hit the big time with her role in Mad Men, she was a model and struggling actor in the '90s. One of her earliest roles, way back in 1998, was in the video for "One Hit Wonder" by Everclear. Luckily for all of us, that wasn't her only hit. 

Matthew McConaughey - "Walkaway Joe"

Alright, alright, alright, we'll concede that Dazed and Confused is what made Matthew McConaughey famous, but before that, he appeared in Trisha Yearwood's video for her hit "Walkaway Joe," playing the titular character of the song. 

Wesley Snipes - "Bad"

For the second single, "Bad" from his album of the same name, Micheal Jackson teamed up with Martin Scorsese to make an 18-minute short film for the video. In the video, Jackson famously has a dance-off with his rivals in a New York subway station. One of the baddies is none other than Wesley Snipes, who only had a few credits under his belt previously. 

Patrick Swayze - "Rosanna"

Toto's song "Rosanna" is famously about Rosanna Arquette. Less well-known is that if you watch the video closely, you'll notice a familiar face as one of the West Side Story-like dancers. Patrick Swayze, one year before his big break in The Outsiders is one of the dancers. In an even cooler bit of trivia, another one of the uncredited dancers in the video is Cynthia Rhodes, who would co-star as Swayze's first dance partner, Penny, in Dirty Dancing. 

Elijah Wood - "Forever Your Girl"

Elijah Wood has been working in Hollywood forever. He started as a child actor in films like Back to the Future II and The Good Sun, but before those even, he had a part in Paula Abdul's video for "Forever Your Girl" in 1989. 

Chevy Chase - "You Can Call Me Al"

Chevy Chase was one of the biggest stars on the planet in 1986 when he starred in the video for "You Can Call Me Al" with his buddy Paul Simon. It is, no lie, one of Chase's best performances, and it's impossible not to crack up at his facial expressions and physical comedy in the video. 

Johnny Depp - "Into The Great Wide Open"

Johnny Depp has always wanted to be a rock star, so it was a great move by Tom Petty to get him to play the part of one in the video for "Into The Great Wide Open" in 1991. The video also stars the legendary Faye Dunaway and Gabrielle Anwar. 

Jennifer Connelly - "I Drove All Night"

The late, great Roy Orbison found almost as much fame after he died as he found in life. Two albums of all-new songs were released posthumously and one song, "I Drove All Night," released in 1992, featured Jennifer Connelly alongside Jason Priestly, in the video, along with Orbison in grainy images of an old TV appearance. 

Kirsten Dunst - "I Knew I Loved You"

Does anybody remember the band Savage Garden? The Aussie duo had a string of huge hits in the late '90s, including the song "I Knew I Loved You" which features Kirsten Dunst as a woman on a subway with whom the lead singer, Darren Hayes, is in love. 

Robin Williams - "Don't Worry, Be Happy"

Bobby McFerrin's 1988 song "Don't Worry, Be Happy" has to be one of the most surprising #1 hits of all time. The song was huge when it came out, and went on to win three Grammys. Someone must have had an inkling though, because superstar Robin Williams co-stars in the video with McFerrin. 

Kim Basinger - "Last Dance With Mary Jane"

Tom Petty made some legendary videos during his career, but the strangest has to be the one for "Last Dance With Mary Jane" which features Kim Basinger playing a corpse, dressed up as a bride. Great song, but a very weird video.

Keanu Reeves - "Rush, Rush"

1991 was a big year for Keanu Reeves. Not only did he star in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey and Point Break, but he also appeared as a James Dean-like character in the video for "Rush, Rush" by Paula Abdul. 

Eddie Murphy - "Do You Remember The Time"

In case you've forgotten just how huge Michael Jackson was in the early '90s, remember there was a time he could premiere a video on MTV, BET, and Fox all at the same time. The video starred Jackson, of course, along with Eddie Murphy and Iman as ancient Egyptian royalty. Magic Johnson also appeared. 

Katie Holmes - "Tongue Tied"

Katie Holmes' career was just starting to take off in 1999 with her starring turn on Dawson's Creek. She also found some time to appear in the video for the song "Tongue Tied" by pop punk band Eve 6. It's not the last time Holmes has appeared in a video, either. A year later, in 2000, she starred with Micheal Douglas and others in a Bob Dylan video. 

Winona Ryder - "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child"

By far the award for the strangest appearance on this list goes to Winona Ryder in the video for Mojo Nixon's song "Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child." Leave it to the late Nixon for coming up with the most ridiculous premise for a song, then landing a star like Ryder to star in the video in 1989, the same year she appeared in Heathers. 

RuPaul - "Love Shack"

If one were to guess which 1980s video to expect a RuPaul appearance, the smart money would be a B-52's video. That's exactly what happened in 1989 when RuPaul popped up very briefly in the video for "Love Shack" as a dancer and partygoer. He wasn't close to famous yet, but he was good friends with the band and he fits right into the campiness of the video. 

Benicio del Toro - "La Isla Bonita"

Benicio del Toro made his big screen debut in 1988 in Pee Wee's Big Top, but a year earlier, he was one of the extras in the video for Madonna's "La Isla Bonita." He is way in the background and can only be clearly seen in one shot, but when you watch the video, it's unmistakenly del Toro. 

Liv Tyler - "Crazy"

According to Liv Tyler, she didn't meet her biological father, Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, until she was eight, and didn't know he was her father for another few years. Still, by the time she starred in the video for "Crazy," they had developed a healthy relationship, and the video, in which she co-stars with Alicia Silverstone, launched her career.

Captain Lou Albano - "Girls Just Want To Have Fun"

Cyndi Lauper was one of the biggest breakout stars of early MTV and for good reason. The low-budget video for her debut single, "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" featured a quirky cast that included her mother (playing her mother), her lawyer, and wrestling star "Captain" Lou Albano as her father. It's a video as fun as the song and it was played on repeat in those early MTV days. 

John Goodman - "Wild Wild Life"

The song "Wild Wild Life" by The Talking Heads was part of their soundtrack for the David Byrne-directed film True Stories. For the video, he recruited some of the people who appear in the film, including John Goodman, who lip-syncs along with the song in a karaoke bar. 

LeVar Burton - "Word Up"

LeVar Burton first found fame as Kunta Kinte in Roots, one of the most memorable performances by any actor, ever. About a decade later, between Roots and Star Trek: The Next Generation, Burton popped up in the video for "Word Up" by Cameo, playing a police officer trying to arrest the band. 

One video we left off this list because it's just too big a list on its own is the video for Ghostbusters which, in addition to the stars of the film also includes Chevy Chase, Danny Devito, Peter Falk, Al Franken, John Candy, and more. It's all too much to add to his list of some of the coolest appearances of stars in music videos!

Halle Berry

Halle Berry is pure Ohio. Not only was John Wick: Chapter 3 star born in Cleveland but she's even named after a local department store, Halle's. Berry grew up in the suburb of Oakwood, just outside the Cleveland city limits, and even attended Cuyahoga Community College while she was first starting her career toward fame. Before starring in some of Hollywood's biggest movies, Berry represented her home state in the Miss USA contest, after being named Miss Ohio USA in 1986. 

Luke Perry

Luke Perry found fame playing a high school student at the posh West Beverly High, but his beginnings were much more humble. The son of a steelworker, Perry was born in the Ohio town of Mansfield and raised in a tiny burg called Fredericktown, where he attended high school at Fredericktown High School. He moved to Los Angeles after graduating and while it took a few years, he landed his big break in Beverly Hills, 90210. Perry died tragically from a stroke in 2019.

Drew Carey

No one on this list is more proud to be from Ohio than Price Is Right host Drew Carey. It's clear that his Cleveland roots mean a lot to him, given that his show, The Drew Carey Show, was set in Cleveland, with a theme song called "Cleveland Rocks." Not only did the comedian grow up in Cleveland, he also attended Kent State in Ohio and even served in the Marine Corps reserves in the state before moving west to find fame. 

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1978 and has always remained a proud Ohioan. She attended Catholic school as a kid and began modeling in Toledo while still in high school. That led to opportunities in New York City, which led to her landing her first film role at 19 in Ang Lee's The Ice Storm (1997). Soon after, she joined the cast of Dawson's Creek and the rest is history. 

John Legend

The Voice judge John Legend was born in the central Ohio town of Springfield. Legend was a true prodigy during his upbringing. He was dabbling in music at a young age, before leaving Ohio to attend the University of Pennsylvania. 

Yvette Nicole Brown

Yvette Nicole Brown took the hard road to fame. Before she landed her starring role on Community, she found her way to success with bit parts and one-offs on TV shows. It all paid off in the end, but before she made it in Hollywood, she was born and raised in the Cleveland, OH area. After high school, she attended the University of Akron and moved to LA after she graduated. 

Clark Gable

There is no bigger star from the Golden Age of Hollywood than Clark Gable. Like many of his fellow Ohioans, he had humble beginnings. Born in 1901 in Cadiz, OH, Gable moved around the state quite a bit before his father and stepmother settled near Akron. Gable struck out on his own, first working in a tire factory in Akron, before bouncing around until he finally ended up in Hollywood in the 1920s. 

Beverly D'Angelo

When you are the granddaughter of the architect who designed the famous Ohio Stadium at The Ohio State University, you know you are pure Ohio. Such is the case for Vacation star Beverly D'Angelo. Unsurprisingly, D'Angelo was born in Columbus and raised in the suburb of Upper Arlington, before setting out on an entertainment career that took her all over North America, before she found success in Hollywood. 

Steve Harvey

Okay, so we're fudging here a little, as beloved talk show host and TV judge Steve Harvey was actually born in West Virginia, but he was raised in Cleveland. After graduating from high school, he briefly attended Kent State, before dropping out and starting his standup career in comedy clubs in and around Cleveland. 

Paul Newman

When you think of the words "movie star," there's a good chance you might picture Paul Newman. From the mid-'50s until his death in 2008, the Shaker Heights, OH native was box office gold. He graduated from Shaker Heights High in 1943 and joined the Navy during World War II. He finally headed to LA in the '50s and over the next six decades starred in some of the biggest movies of all time. 

Arsenio Hall

Born in Cleveland in 1956, actor and talk show host Arsenio Hall grew up in nearby Warrensville Heights, Ohio, and attended college at both Ohio University and Kent State. He left Ohio, first for Chicago and later LA, and his career took off with some fantastic roles from there. 

Phyllis Diller

Phyllis Diller's remarkable life began in Lima, Ohio in 1917. Her roundabout way to comedy legend status started when she was still a full-time mother and homemaker with her military husband in Alameda, CA. She was discovered after she made some appearances on Bay Area radio and TV stations and from there became a star. 

Rachael Harris

Lucifer star Rachael Harris was born in Worthington, OH, and grew up in the Columbus area before attending college at Otterbein University in nearby Westerville, OH. She moved to LA and was a member of the legendary improv group The Groundlings before she started landing TV roles in the 1990s. Today she's best known for Goosebumps (2023) and Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010), in addition to Lucifer. 

Steven Spielberg

In The Fablemans, Ohio native Steven Spielberg tells a fictionalized version of his own life, but one major change was made. In the movie, Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) and his family move from New Jersey to Arizona. In real life, the Spielbergs moved to Phoenix from Cincinnati, Ohio. Though he only lived in Cincinnati for the first ten years or so of his life, there is no doubt that one of the all-time great directors has his roots in Ohio. 

Carmen Electra

Carmen Electra was born just outside of Cincinnati and grew up in the Queen City. She first started dancing and acting at Princeton High School in the Cincinnati school district and her love of doing both led directly to Hollywood where she's been doing both for decades now. 

Doris Day

Though she retired from acting in 1968, Doris Day is still remembered as a legend of old Hollywood. She also recorded almost three dozen albums over her nearly 100-year life. It all started in Cincinnati in 1922 when Day was born Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff. Her career started as a singer on a local radio station in Cincinnati, WLW. Her music led her to Hollywood, and a star was born. 

Philip Michael Thomas

Philip Michael Thomas is most famous for starring as Rico Tubbs on the '80s hit Miami Vice. He's also famous for inventing the term "EGOT", claiming in the '80s that he would win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony, though he has yet to win any of the prestigious awards. Thomas was born in Cincinnati, but raised in California, where his career began. 

Teri Garr

Though she was raised mostly in Los Angeles, Teri Garr was born near Cleveland, OH, in the suburb of Lakewood. Her parents were entertainers, so it makes sense they would eventually land in Southern California, so while Garr didn't spend much time in Ohio, the state can certainly claim her as one of their own. 

Randy "Macho Man" Savage

Oh yeah! One of the greatest wrestlers of all time came from Columbus, OH. Born Randy Poffo in 1952, the Macho Man and his wrestling brother "Leaping" Lanny Poffo lived in Zanesville, Ohio, until the family moved to the Chicagoland area when Savage was in high school. Though he tried to become a pro baseball player, Savage found fame with the WWE and was a superstar in the sport until he died in 2012. 

Anne Heche

Before her tragic death in 2022, Anne Heche put together an impressive career in Hollywood and broke a lot of barriers when she very publicly dated Ellen DeGeneres. It was a long way from her strict Christian upbringing in Ohio. Heche was born in the Akron suburb of Aurora, Ohio, and also lived near Cleveland for a time before her father moved the family to New Jersey in 1977 when Heche was eight. 

Rob Lowe

Okay, okay, so Rob Lowe was actually born in Virginia, but he moved to Dayton, OH at a very young age and was raised in the Buckeye State. His first gigs as a professional actor came when he was still living in Dayton and as soon as he could, he headed out to Hollywood where he became one of the famous "Brat Pack" in the 1980s. His career had a few bumps in the road, but today he's one of the most beloved stars on the silver screen. 

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker's most famed role is of a dyed-in-the-wool Manhattanite, but the actress was born in a quaint little town near Columbus named Nelsonville, Ohio, with a population of about 5000. Her career as a child actor took her whole family to New York in the 1970s and Parker has never looked back. 

Lili Reinhart

Riverdale star Lili Reinhart was born and raised in the Cleveland area, where she lived until she was 18. After graduating high school, she moved to LA and though she struggled like most young actors, eventually she started landing parts in a few movies, before scoring a starring role on the CW's Riverdale, playing the iconic Betty Cooper. 

Jamie Farr

Jamie Farr's most famous character, Corporal Klinger on one of the highest-rated shows of all time, M*A*S*H, was from Toledo, Ohio, which would have been easy for the actor to remember, as that is where Farr is from too. For decades, Farr's name was associated with the LPGA golf tournament, The Jamie Farr Classic (with various sponsor names over the years). 

Martin Sheen

Born Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez in Dayton, OH, The West Wing star Martin Sheen always knew he wanted to be an actor, even growing up in Dayton. Orphaned at eleven, he lived in Dayton until he graduated high school and headed off for New York to make it big, and it's safe to say he has. 

Fred Willard

Comedy legend Fred Willard is responsible for some of the funniest lines in the Christopher Guest family of films, a sense of humor he developed as a kid in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, OH. Born in Cleveland in 1933, Willard moved to New York in the '50s, and though it took a couple of decades to find fame, he eventually did. The world lost a great one when he died in 2020. 

Allison Janney

Though she is technically from Boston, where she was born in 1959, Allison Janney was raised in Dayton. Even her legendary character from The West Wing, CJ Craig, was  from Dayton and went back home in one episode for her high school reunion. 

Katt Williams

Katt Williams, the unpredictable, and hilarious, comedian was born and raised in Cincinnati, but left town and moved to Florida after being emancipated from his parents at age 13. For years he worked the comedy clubs before launching to fame in the late '90s. 

Nancy Cartwright

She might not be the most famous face on this list, but her voice is one of the most famous in the world. Nancy Cartwright has been doing the voice of Bart Simpson (and other Simpsons characters) for more than 30 years, but long before scoring that gig, she grew up in Kettering, Ohio after being born in Dayton.

Patricia Heaton

Patricia Heaton, star of Everybody Loves Raymond and The Middle, was born in the Cleveland suburb of Bay Village, OH and she got her bachelor's degree at The Ohio State University. So while she lives in LA and in the UK these days, she's an Ohioan through and through. 

Catherine Bach

It's hard to believe that The Dukes of Hazzard was consistently one of the highest-rated shows during its run in the late '70s and early '80s. It's not hard to believe that Cleveland native Catherine Bach as Daisy Duke in her short shorts was a big reason why it was so popular. 

Rocky Carroll

NCIS star Rocky Carroll is a proud son of Cincinnati, where he attended the School for Creative and Performing Arts for high school like many other stars from the area. After attending college in St. Louis, MO, he moved to New York City to start his career and he's never looked back. 

While it may not jump out as an entertainment hotbed, when you scratch the surface, you'll soon realize just how many celebrities have been born in Ohio, and it's a lot.

The early ‘00s was quite the era for funky fashion. From lace-up jeans to bedazzled everything, and even rugby shirts, a lot was going on at the turn of the century. At that time, Katie Holmes was getting her start on TV as a star of Dawson’s Creek and undoubtedly tried out a number of Y2K fashion trends. But this past fall, Holmes basically broke the internet when the actress and filmmaker walked a red carpet in an outfit that brought back cursed memories of the minidress and jeans trend of that time. 

Katie Holmes strutted to the iHeartRadio Z100’s Jingle Ball November 2022 show in Madison Square Garden in New York City in a blue satin bustier top from Tove, Reformation “Wilder” wide leg jeans and Maison Margiela sneakers, in an internet fashion moment, the internet thought Holmes was looking to revive a trend they felt better left in the past. The look went positively viral and the commentary even reached Katie Holmes, who took to her social media to clarify “IT’S A TOP” amidst the hate. When the actress was asked about what transpired as a result of the outfit, she said this to Glamour: 

During the recent interview, Holmes was read a number of headlines that lead to the distaste over her outfit. The Batman Begins star sarcastically responded with “that’s powerful language,” while also sharing that girls in her neighborhood have worn the look before, and the top only covered half her behind, so it was very much not a mini dress. 

When the fiasco happened a few months ago, Katie Holmes’ stylist Brie Welch defended the outfit choice to The New York Times by sharing the thought process behind the outfit. Welch said that she was going for a more youthful look for Holmes to go with Jingle Ball’s atmosphere. It'd be a shame for Holmes to get a bad rep for her style based on one choice considering how many winning looks she’s had, such as this one: 

The minidress over jeans trend was not the strongest look Y2K had to offer, and clearly other people who lived the era do not feel like it aged well. Certainly one day there will be big fashion looks from this era that future generations will look down upon too; it’s the circle of life. I don’t imagine all the see-through dresses we’ve seen on red carpets or underboob dresses will be high fashion years from now. 

Along with Holmes reacting to the online discourse about her fashion look during the cover story, she also spoke about keeping her teen daughter with Tom Cruise out of the spotlight following Suri Cruise previously singing in one of her recent movies. Holmes' latest movie is Rare Objects, which she wrote, directed and stars in. The new 2023 movie release is currently in select theaters. 

Within the past year, there have been a lot more conversations about what it’s like to be a “nepo baby,” especially as the child of actors, as of late. One high-profile nepo baby who has remained out of the debate is Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s daughter, Suri Cruise, who is currently 16 years old and has a notable lack of presence in the spotlight. According to her mother, that’s very much intentional. 

Katie Holmes has a past of being a target of the paparazzi, especially during the years she was dating and married to Tom Cruise, whom she filed for divorce from in 2012. These days, it seems she does whatever she can to lead a private life. When the actress and filmmaker was recently asked about what it’s like to now be the mother of teenage daughter, she said this: 

During a cover interview for Glamour, Holmes gushed about the person Suri Cruise has grown up to be, along with getting honest about how “visible” she was at a young age. I’m sure many of us remember all the tabloid pictures of Holmes and her daughter (who is a spitting image of her) at grocery stores when she was just a young girl.  

Holmes also reflected on Suri Cruise finding a part in her 2022 movie Alone Together, which Holmes starred in, wrote and directed. Suri Cruise sang in the opening credits of the movie a cover of “Blue Moon,” inspired by Diane Keaton singing the same song in So It Goes. Holmes said this about her daughter collaborating with her: 

It sounds like Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise have a sweet mother-daughter relationship nowadays and prefer to keep a private life even though they are starting to collaborate together on movies. Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise have kept a low profile for their daughter in recent years, keeping the spotlight on their respective careers, most recently with Tom Cruise’s movie Top Gun: Maverick becoming a huge box office draw last year and getting a ton of Oscar nods. 

Katie Holmes’ own latest project is another directorial effort called Rare Objects, which she also co-wrote as well. The 2023 new movie release is about a woman (played by Holmes) who seeks to rebuild her life with a new job at an antique store. You can check out Rare Objects this Friday, April 14. 

Suri Cruise is the daughter of two high-profile celebrities. Her father, Tom Cruise, is currently rolling in the box office money from his latest blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick. You may remember his former wife Katie Holmes from starring in Dawson’s Creek, and she's also recently started directing. Based on her unique role in her mother’s directorial project Alone Together, it seems like Suri is following in her parent’s footsteps…sort of.

Katie Holmes had to bring “the highest level of talent” for her latest movie Alone Together. Her 16-year-old daughter (who’s the spitting image of her mom) may not be following her parent's footsteps in acting, but she'll be singing “Blue Moon” during the opening credits. In a video interview on Yahoo! Entertainment, Holmes spoke about why she recruited her daughter to sing in her new movie.

The Batman Begins star felt the need to incorporate “Blue Moon” into her movie because she loved Diane Keaton’s cover of the song so much in the rom-com And So It Goes. The Annie Hall actress actually met Suri when she was a one-year-old. What a nice way to show audiences you’re a Keaton fan.

The romantic COVID-set film Alone Together marks the second directorial work of Katie Holmes ever since the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival film All We Had. Co-starring Across the Universe’s Jim Sturgess, Alone Together is when two strangers end up staying in the same Airbnb and have to stay with each other during the COVID-19 lockdown. She was inspired to direct and write Alone Together after a piece she wrote in Vogue about how quarantining during the pandemic was a time to strengthen the bond she had with her own daughter. So, it’s no wonder that she felt her next project wouldn’t be complete without Suri having some type of role in it. 

As for Suri’s father, Tom Cruise’s long-awaited sequel Top Gun: Maverick has been soaring high at the box office passing the $1 billion mark. This box office hit has been breaking records for the Mission Impossible star’s career like being a number one box office hit for Cruise for five consecutive years as well as his highest-grossing domestic movie. The action-packed star will also star in another set of sequels from the Mission: Impossible franchise- Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Parts One and Two which will hit theaters in the summer of 2023 and 2024. It looks like Tom Cruise’s success can only get better from here.

The talented daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes has managed to stay out of the public eye for the majority of her childhood. While Suri has no plans yet to launch a singing career, she does plan on singing yet again in her mother’s next project Rare Objects which is based on the 2016 historical fiction bestseller by Kathleen Tessaro. Other than that, Holmes said that Suri is just your average 16-year-old high school student.

While we have no idea what path will be taken for Suri Cruise, it’s great to know she has the guides of two talented parents there to help her on her journey. The 2022 movie release Alone Together has a video-on-demand release right now. 

For years, Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes were Hollywood’s favorite undercover couple. Many fans were hoping the couple would go the distance despite never confirming their relationship. Unfortunately, those dreams were dashed as the couple reportedly called it quit in 2019 after years of breakup rumors. Now, Foxx seems to be enjoying his bachelorhood. Those betting on the Oscar winner moving from Leonardo DiCaprio territory into George Clooney mode may have to cut their losses. The Just Mercy star broke down why he’ll never get married.

Since breaking up with Katie Holmes, there seemingly hasn’t been anyone new on Jamie Foxx’s arm for some time. But Foxx hasn’t felt any pressure to start dating again let alone get married. The Oscar winner’s idea of the average American family was different from everyone else’s. The Spider-Man: No Way Home star spoke on why marriage just isn’t for him.

But the multihyphenate wasn’t speaking out of turn about marriage not being him. Jamie Foxx told E! News he did feel some pressure early on. The Hollywood star revealed his daughter Corrine initially wanted him to get married. She was influenced by being around her friends’ families. The younger Foxx’s perspective changed as she got older. Around that time, she witnessed those marriages falling apart and ending in divorce.

Witnessing those families splitting apart led to his two daughters easing up about marriage. Jamie Foxx appeared to take pride in the family he’s cultivated for himself. The Soul star said about the relationship he shared with daughters:

Overall, Jamie Foxx was content with his current situation. He gets to revel in his singlehood while being there for his daughters whenever they need him. As the multi-hyphenate pointed out, having the nuclear American Dream isn’t for everyone. With his career and family being his main priorities, bringing a wife into the situation may leave her lower on Foxx’s list of priorities. At least, his daughters understand their father is loving his life and time.

Being single seemed to fit in with Jamie Foxx’s current lifestyle. Maybe marriage isn’t suitable right now, but you can never say never to any life change. With the pressure of marriage off the table, Jamie Foxx has carried on with his busy career. He has so much on his plate with films like All-Star Weekend and They Cloned Tyrone coming down the pipeline. Audiences will see him next as Electro in Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters on Dec. 17.

As the theme song famously noted, the characters in Dawson's Creek didn't want to wait for their lives to be over. They wanted to know, right now, what would it be. Now that it's been nearly 18 years since The WB drama series left the air in 2003, it can feel like a lifetime has passed since these characters were regularly seen on TVs. When the show finished its run, several of the actors involved moved on to many different, often exciting, new projects. Notably, one star in particular has found incredible critical and commercial success throughout her prestigious, award-winning acting career.

Still, it's hard to know where Katie Holmes, James Van Der Beek, Joshua Jackson, Michelle Williams, and Busy Phillips (to name a few) would be today if it weren't for this beloved high school drama. But, what have they done with their lives since? Well, let's find out!

James Van Der Beek (Dawson Leery)

As the titular Dawson Leery, James Van Der Beek found his star-making role in this WB drama series. During his time on the show, the actor would also star in Varsity Blues, Texas Rangers, The Rules of Attraction, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. After Dawson's Creek came to an end, Van Der Beek gained acclaim for playing a fictionalized version of himself on Don't Trust The B---- In Apartment 23. He was also in the main cast for CSI: Cyber, and he voices a role on Vampirina. He was in Pose, and starred in Labor Day, Downsizing, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, and the short film, Power/Rangers, which he co-wrote. Most recently, Van Der Beek appeared on Season 28 of Dancing with the Stars. He'll be seen in Bad Hair next month, and also starred in Quibi's Princess Bride remake.

Katie Holmes (Joey Potter)

Playing the part of Joey Potter, Katie Holmes had one of the lead roles in Dawson's Creek. Previously best known for The Ice Storm, her screen debut, this WB series paved the way for Holmes' career as an actress. Through the show's success, Holmes played prominent roles in Go, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Wonder Boys, The Gift, Phone Booth, and Pieces of April, all during her time on the series. When the show wrapped, Holmes was most notably seen in Batman Begins, Thank You For Smoking, Mad Money, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Jack and Jill, The Giver, Miss Meadows, Woman in Gold, and Logan Lucky. Plus, in 2016, Holmes made her directorial debut with the indie drama All We Had, which the first-time filmmaker also produced and starred in. Earlier this year, Holmes starred in Brahms: The Boy II and The Secret: Dare to Dream.

Michelle Williams (Jen Lindley)

As Jen Lindley, a New York City transplant in the town of Capeside, MA, Michelle Williams found fame through her main role on Dawson's Creek. Since then, Williams has received a great deal of acclaim and accolades for her dramatic film performances, notably in Wendy And Lucy, My Week With Marilyn (for which she won a Golden Globe), Blue Valentine, Manchester by the Sea, Brokeback Mountain, Take This Waltz, Meek's Cutoff, and more. Williams currently has four Oscar nominations, and she also won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her lead performance in the miniseries, Fosse/Verdon. Additionally, Williams also earned a Tony nomination for her 2016 performance in Blackbird. She was also seen in Venom, Shutter Island, The Greatest Showman, and Oz the Great and Powerful. Most recently, Williams starred in After the Wedding. Next, she'll be seen in Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Joshua Jackson (Pacey Witter)

In the role of Pacey Witter, a longtime friend of Dawson and Joey's (with strong romantic feelings for the latter), Joshua Jackson stole many hearts during his time on Dawson's Creek. His character was a constant presence throughout the show's entire run, and he fueled a burning love triangle between the three lead characters. Prior to his role in this series, Jackson was best known for The Mighty Ducks movies and Scream 2. During his time at the Creek, Jackson was also seen in Cruel Intentions, Muppets From Space, and The Skulls. When the show wrapped, Jackson became the star of Fringe and The Affair. He also starred in Cursed, Bobby, Shutter, One Week, Lay the Favorite, and Bobby, to name a few films. Last year, the actor starred in Netflix's acclaimed mini-series, When They See Us. He was last seen in Hulu's Little Fires Everywhere.

Mary Beth Peil (Evelyn Ryan)

As Evelyn Ryan, Jen's grandmother, Mary Beth Peil was seen throughout all six seasons of Dawson's Creek. Once primarily a stage and opera actress, Peil didn't make her screen debut until 1992's Jersey Girl. Therefore, Dawson's Creek became one of the actress's first prominent screen roles. Following her time on this popular series, Peil starred in 2004's The Stepford Wives, Shortbus, Flags of Our Fathers, Mirrors, and Collateral Beauty. She also appeared in nearly fifty episodes of The Good Wife, as well as episodes of Fringe and Law & Order: SVU. In this time, Peil still acted on stage, notably in productions of Nine, Sunday in the Park with George, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Follies, and Anastasia, for which she received a Tony nomination. Most recently, she starred in the short-lived series Katy Keene earlier this year.

Mary-Margaret Humes (Gail Leery)

In the role of Gail Leery, Dawson's mom, Mary-Margaret Humes played a primary role in the first four seasons of Dawson's Creek, followed by recurring appearances in Seasons 5 and 6. The former Miss Florida USA winner has appeared in more than 50 shows over the course of her acting career, including The Dukes of Hazzard, The Love Boat, The A-Team, Knight Rider, Matlock, Blossom, Murphy Brown, and more. Dawson's Creek, however, remains her most well-known role. Since the series concluded, Humes continued to appear on various TV shows, including Grey's Anatomy, CSI: NY, Criminal Minds, Luck, and Saving Grace. She also starred in several TV movies. The more recent ones include 2018's Home By Spring and Christmas in Love, and 2019's A Feeling of Home and Winter Love Story. In February, Humes starred in A Valentine's Match.

Nina Repeta (Bessie Potter)

Playing the part of Bessie Potter, Joey's sister, Nina Repeta was seen throughout all six seasons of Dawson's Creek. Prior to her role in this WB series, Repeta appeared in episodes of Matlock and starred in Radioland Murders. Additionally, during her time on Dawson's Creek, the actress was also seen in 2002's Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Since the show's finale, however, Repeta hasn't appeared on screen quite as consistently as some of her former Dawson's Creek co-stars. She's appeared in episodes of Palmetto Pointe, The Originals, and Good Behavior, also starring in Southern Gothic, The Remaining, and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Most recently, Repeta starred in the 2018 short film, Long Drive To Yadkin. She had a child in 2008, which might explain why she hasn't appeared in as many movies and shows since Creek wrapped up in 2003.

John Wesley Shipp (Mitch Leery)

As Dawson's dad, Mitch Leery, John Wesley Shipp was seen prevalently throughout the first four seasons of Dawson's Creek. Before he joined this WB series, Shipp was best known for playing the lead character on The Flash in the early '90s. The actor also appeared on soap operas like As the World Turns and Guiding Light throughout the '80s. Following his time in Dawson's Creek, Shipp appeared in One Life To Live, and he was also seen in episodes of Teen Wolf, Drop Dead Diva, JAG, CSI: NY, and The Closer before he reprised his role as Barry Allen in The CW's The Flash, also playing this part in episodes of Supergirl and Arrow. Kerr Smith (Jack McPhee)

Playing Jack McPhee, Kerr Smith was a primary cast member on Dawson's Creek from his Season 2 introduction through the show's sixth season. His role gained considerable attention, particularly for sharing what was considered "TV's first passionate kiss between two men" with Adam Kaufman. Prior to playing Jack, Smith was notably seen in The Broken Hearts Club and As the World Turns, but while the show was on the air, he starred in Final Destination. After the Creek ran dry, he played a main role in E-Ring, Justice, and Life Unexpected. He also had recurring roles on CSI: NY, Eli Stone, NCIS, The Fosters, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and, most recently, Riverdale. Meredith Monroe (Andie McPhee)

Playing the part of Andie McPhee, an academic, ambitious fellow classmate at Capeside High School, Meredith Monroe joined Dawson's Creek in Season 2 and became a main cast member in Seasons 3 and 4. During her time on the show, Monroe was also seen in Minority Report, New Best Friend, and Manhood. Since Dawson's Creek came to a close, the actress has bounced between film and television, notably with her recurring role in Criminal Minds, Hart of Dixie, and 13 Reasons Why, as well as roles in NCIS, Bones, CSI, Psych, Hawaii FIve-0, CSI: NY, House, Cold Case, Wake, Castle, Drop Dead Diva, Private Practice, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, S.W.A.T., and The Edge of Seventeen.

Busy Phillips (Audrey Liddell)

As Audrey Liddell, Busy Phillips joined Dawson's Creek in Season 5 and became a main cast member for the show's sixth and final season. Prior to her role in this WB drama, Phillips was best known for her work in the beloved short-lived sitcom, Freaks & Geeks. Following the show's conclusion, Phillips became better known for her standout role in Cougar Town. She also played roles in ER, Love, Inc., Undeclared, Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles, Vice Principals, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. She also starred in White Chicks, He's Just Not That Into You, Made of Honor, The Gift, and I Feel Pretty. From 2018-2019, Phillips hosted her own talk show, Busy Tonight. Additionally, in 2018, Phillips published her memoir, This Will Only Hurt A Little, which became a New York Times bestseller. She also recently appeared in an episode of Camping.

Chad Michael Murray (Charlie Todd)

Just a couple years before he played the lead role in One Tree Hill, Chad Michael Murray played Charlie Todd, Jen's college boyfriend, in Dawson's Creek's fifth season. In what is certainly his most noteworthy "before he was famous" role, this appearance helped to solidify Murray as a mainstay on The WB/CW. This tradition continues as the TV actor is currently playing a role in Riverdale. In addition, he's also known for his roles in Freaky Friday, A Cinderella Story, 2005's House of Wax, and Fruitvale Station. He also played a supporting role in Agent Carter, and appeared in Left Behind, The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts Of Georgia, and A Madea Christmas. Murray was recently seen in Survive the Night, and a pair of holiday-themed movies, Write Before Christmas and Love in Winterland.

The new year has just begun and while audiences will have to wait a bit before we get to all the big blockbusters, the beginning of the year is home to plenty of new movies for fans of the horror genre. Among them is Brahms: The Boy II, the sequel the 2016 horror film The Boy from director William Brent Bell. We now have our first look at the film as the official Brahms: The Boy II trailer puts actress Katie Holmes up against a terrifying doll. Take a look:

If horror movies have taught us anything, it’s that if your kid wants to have a creepy old doll they found, you tell them no. I don’t care if you want to be the nice parent, no good can come of such things. You don’t let your kid have a loaded gun do you? Creepy dolls are basically the same thing. It’s a lesson that Katie Holmes’ character Liza looks to find out the hard way in Brahms: The Boy II.

In Brahms: The Boy II, it seems that the family’s young son Jude is somewhat troubled, exhibiting disturbing behavior by violently ripping apart his stuffed animals. That’s never a good sign so Liza and her husband Sean take their little murderer-in-the-making to a secluded house in the woods to see if that doesn’t help him.

Well, unfortunately for them, it turns out that the house they go to for to improve things is right next to the Heelshire Mansion, which served as the setting of the horrors that took place in the first movie. There young Jude finds the doll Brahms who like a Mogwai, comes with a very specific set of rules for his care that must be followed to the letter.

Mother’s instinct kicks in for Katie Holmes’ Liza, but getting rid of Brahms proves to be a complicated and dangerous task. The trailer for Brahms: The Boy II is very creepy, with the Brahms doll being very much in the running as having the most disturbing face of any of the evil dolls that have inhabited horror films over the years. The scariness of the doll actually proved to be quite the challenge for Katie Holmes.

Based on the trailer, Brahms: The Boy II definitely seems to be leaning into the more supernatural aspects of this story with all of the bugs coming out of the doll. That’s interesting given the ending of the first film. Spoilers for The Boy ahead! In The Boy, Lauren Cohan’s character Greta is charged with babysitting the Brahms doll for the Heelshire’s during which time she notices the doll’s tendency to move on its own from room to room.

She learns that the Heelshire’s son died in a fire when he was eight and comes to believe that Brahms’ spirit lives in the doll. She later finds out that just prior to the fire, a young playmate of Brahms was found with her skull crushed in. Eventually, it is revealed that Brahms never died and has been living in the walls of the mansion and communicating through the doll

Now an adult man, Brahms attacks Greta but Greta eventually kills him, or so we think. Brahms survives and puts his doll back together. This initial trailer for Brahms: The Boy 2 doesn’t really give any of that away so it will be interesting to see if the adult Brahms plays a role again. Here it seems that the doll itself is actually evil and may have been what made Brahms insane in the first place and it is now positioned to do the same thing to Jude.

He is. Tom Cruise is almost as famous for being a Scientologist as he is for his movies. The two adopted children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman are as well.

He first joined the Church in the mid-eighties and has since become a strong advocate on behalf of it. The leader of the church, David Miscavige, was the best man at Cruise’s wedding to Katie Holmes and Cruise has spoken publicly often about his faith in Scientology. Tom Cruise is such an important part of the Church, Miscavige invented an award to give him, called the Freedom Medal Of Valor.

In 2008, a video of an interview with Tom Cruise that was intended to be for Church use was leaked to the internet. In the video -- which was edited to have the Mission: Impossible theme playing under his talking -- the actor makes a lot of wild statements that the Church claimed were taken out of context and they sued YouTube and others to have the video removed. YouTube eventually removed it, but it can be found on the internet still.

Before he started acting as a young man, Tom Cruise also briefly attended Seminary hoping to become a Catholic priest, but the acting bug caught and he left for Hollywood.

Following 2017’s Logan Lucky, Katie Holmes is headed back to the big screen for STX Films’ upcoming movie Brahms: The Boy II. The actress plays the mother of a boy who befriends a doll he calls Brahms after moving into a creepy mansion. She’s no stranger to horror film work, but ahead of the release of this project, Katie Holmes admitted she gets scared filming scary movies.

In particular, Brahms: The Boy II was frightening at times. It was not because of the script or its creepy mansion setting, but because of the fact a doll plays a prominent role in the horror flick.

Brahms: The Boy II isn’t Katie Holmes’ first horror project by a long shot. She’s been in movies like Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, and Disturbing Behavior. However, some of these aren’t even straight horror flicks and it’s been a while since she dipped into the horror well.

She said she took on this role because it was a mom character and her child and how it “was such a universal fear for every parent” to want to protect their kid from danger and badness.

While filming the role, however, she said she got a little bit jumpy when asking whether or not she believes in supernatural forces. She said:

When asked during the CinemaCon 2019 panel which horror movies influenced her most over the years, the actress cited a lot of classic films like The Shining, Rosemary’s Baby, Halloween, and Scream. So although she said it’s “hard” for her “to watch them,” she has at least seen some of the big horror movie moments of the past several decades.

Brahms: The Boy II is a sequel to the 2016 film The Boy, also produced by STX, which started its feature length career with another horror film, The Gift. This new iteration will return to the Heelshire Mansion to tell a brand new story. You’ll be able to see it for yourself on July 26, 2019 – the same week as Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

In the meantime, Katie Holmes better start preparing herself for the premiere now given the rough time she seems to have with scary moments, although, as long as no one hands her a doll at the premiere I assume she'll be fine.

Recently, there have been rumors suggesting that Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes are separated. The acting couple has shared a secretive relationship together for at least a couple years now, with early reports suggesting that they got together around 2013. If those rumors can be believed, they're officially in splitsville. But that's not true, according to Foxx and Holmes themselves. Responding to these recent break-up allegations, they claim they're still itogether, but they're not spending that much time in each other's company for a reason. Here's what we know.

According to a source close to the couple, Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes have been spending a good amount of time away from one another, but they haven't called it quits. As it was reported by Entertainment Tonight, Foxx and Holmes aren't the type of couple who flaunt their relationship to the press. They are known to live "independent lives" from one another, and they'll go for "long stretches" away from seeing each other. Most importantly, they are also "very, very private." When Foxx and Holmes do get together, they don't make a big deal about it; they aren't trying to win over too many tabloids. A few months ago, when a question about Katie Holmes was brought up by ESPN, Jamie Foxx earned headlines for avoiding the topic altogether.

And when it comes to claims that they've officially broken up, a representative for Kate Holmes claims that's simply "false" information. To prove that point, the representative says Holmes recently visited Jamie Foxx over the weekend for a pre-4th of July celebration in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where Foxx was spending time with friends. Katie Holmes, meanwhile, will be enjoying the time away from her daughter, Suri, since she's at summer camp at the moment. Suri is Kate Holmes' child from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise. So, it seems that they're still going strong as a couple, despite what the presses might've said.

Jamie Foxx was last seen in last year's Baby Driver. He'll next be seen in Robin Hood, which comes out on November 21. Meanwhile, Foxx is adding a few more titles to his name next year, as he makes his screenwriting and directorial debut in All-Star Weekend, a new comedy he also stars in. That movie comes out on February 19th. Jamie Foxx recently signed on to appear in the title role for Spawn, a new adaptation of the Todd McFarlane, which will also be written and directed by McFarlane in his directorial debut. It comes from producer Jason Blum. Details are scarce at the moment, but it's expected to come out next year. Katie Holmes, meanwhile, was last seen in Logan Lucky and Dear Dictator last year. She'll next appear in the drama The Gift, which is slated to arrive later this year. She is also soon expected to hit the small screen again for the first time since Dawson's Creek.

Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes are busy people with busy lives, but they're still keeping it together, according to the celebrity couple themselves.

Television nowadays is in an era of reboots, remakes, and revivals, and few shows seem to be entirely off-limits as candidates for returns to the small screen. Dawson's Creek recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of its premiere on The WB way back in 1998, which naturally led fans to wonder if a trip back to Capeside to check back in with Dawson and Co. could be in the cards. Members of the cast and the creator weighed in on a potential revival, and fans may have mixed feelings about what they had to say. Here's how creator Greg Berlanti feels about a Dawson's Creek revival:

The show was a way for Greg Bertlanti to express himself back in the late 1990s, and his life has evidently changed to the point that he couldn't channel the same emotional connection for a Dawson's Creek revival. He certainly has no shortage of other projects to work on as well, so it's not like he's lacking in jobs these days. Interestingly, Berlanti is totally fine with somebody else taking over the show for a revival, if it got the green light. Not all creators of hit shows might be willing to pass the torch to another producer, but Berlanti is apparently so cool with the prospect that he'd watch the revival. Good for him!

James Van Der Beek, who played Dawson himself, has thoughts about a potential revival as well:

All things considered, it's difficult to imagine a Dawson's Creek revival that didn't reinvent the premise. James Van Der Beek--who has had some less-than-complimentary reactions and comments about the show--evidently doesn't believe that Dawson's Creek could come back without some major changes, which is understandable. As much as nostalgic fans might want to see Joey climbing through Dawson's bedroom window again, it might not make much sense for them as adults. These are characters who may be married with kids at this point! Well, except for poor Jen, but it would be fun to see how Jack has fared raising her child.

Another star doesn't sound like she'd even consider a Dawson's Creek revival. Katie Holmes had this to say in the chat with EW about returning to Capeside:

Katie Holmes hasn't changed her tune about a potential revival since she first addressed the question back in February 2016. She evidently believes that the past is best left in the past when it comes to Dawson's Creek, and it wouldn't work in 2018 the way it worked in 1998. While some stars are definitely on board to reprise their roles, Katie Holmes isn't one of them. At least we got Holmes and the rest of the cast back together for an adorable reunion photo!

Dawson's Creek was once one of the biggest shows for young adults, and fans are still passionate to this day about whether Pacey or Dawson was a better match for Joey. In fact, it's difficult to believe that the show premiered way back in 1998 and the young actors who tackled the four lead roles are now accomplished performers with many roles to their names. James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams reunited for Dawson's Creek's 20th anniversary. Take a look at the pic!

Something tells me Joey/Pacey fans will be happy with this reunion photo! Katie Holmes has her hands on Joshua Jackson's shoulders in a pose that could almost pass for a photo of Joey and Pacey, 15 years after the finale ended with the two poised to enjoy a happily-ever-after. The response to the pic (posted on EW's Twitter) might have been quite negative among those fans if James Van Der Beek had been touching one or both of them. That love triangle may be best left in the past. For her part, Michelle Williams looks lovely as always as she stands over the other three.

Now that TV is in an era of reboots, remakes, and revivals, this reunion of the four key Dawson's Creek players will undoubtedly have fans wondering if they could comeback for another batch of episodes together. Revivals -- such as Will and Grace and the newly-premiered Roseanne -- have turned in huge ratings and given the actors more exposure. That said, the actors are more or less doing pretty well for themselves without tackling their Dawson's Creek roles again, and Katie Holmes has already said that she doesn't think Dawson's Creek could work again for a fairly understandable reason.

Some members of the cast have spoken about a willingness to return for a revival, however, so who knows? Maybe something could happen to bring them all together again, even if not for a full batch of episodes. Surely fans would tune in for a reunion special on the small screen. Even the busiest members of the cast might be able to get together for a special running an hour or two rather than a full season. We'll have to wait and see. Dawson's Creek does still have an impact on current shows, so we can be positive that its legacy lives on.

It was just over 20 years ago when Katie Holmes first hit it big with TV audiences on the teen drama Dawson's Creek, and she's now set up to potentially take on her biggest TV role since portraying Joey Potter for six seasons. (No, not in a reunion.) Holmes has been cast as the lead for an in-development drama at Fox hailing from Empire and Person of Interest writer/producers.

The currently untitled project sounds like Homeland through the prism of Shonda Rhimes, and it will see Katie Holmes playing FBI Special Agent Hazel Otis during a time of major crisis. While she's neck-deep in a terrorism investigation, Hazel is further burdened by the public discovering she is also in the "other woman" in a relationship with a married, high-level general. Her life takes a downward turn as she gets labeled "the mistress" by the outside world, and she then must struggle to claw back the life and relationships she once had, both personally and professionally.

There's the potential for some majorly meaty material there, and Katie Holmes does know a thing or two about having her personal life picked apart by onlookers. Her marriage with Tom Cruise is still making headlines after all these years, and her current relationship with Jamie Foxx is getting publicized for the lack of publicity it has received. So the actress, who also serves as executive producer for the pilot, will likely bring some firsthand motivation to the role of Hazel.

According to TVLine, the pilot will be written by Ilene Chaiken, the Empire scribe who also created beloved drama The L Word, and Melissa Scrivner Love, who has worked on Person of Interest, Rosewood, CSI: Miami and more. (With Chaiken involved, perhaps it's no coincidence that The L Word vet Rose Rollins was also cast in the pilot following the Holmes announcement.) The duo will executive produce alongside Holmes, Scandal's Judy Smith and The Mick's Oly Obst.

Katie Holmes made a sweet turn in last year's Logan Lucky on the big screen, and she'll soon be seen opposite Michael Caine and Odeya Rush in the comedic satire Dear Dictator. On the small screen, Holmes most recently reprised her portrayal of Jackie Kennedy for the follow-up miniseries The Kennedys: After Camelot. Other than a recurring role on Ray Donovan's third season, though, this new project will be her first big role in an ongoing series since Dawson's Creek.

This weekend was full of NBA All-Star weekend fun and shenanigans, from the annual dunk contest to the three-point shootout to rapper Twista allegedly getting into a late night brawl after a Michael Jordan house party. (As we've all done before, amirite?) But it wasn't very fun for actor Jamie Foxx to take part in a particular ESPN interview ahead of the All-Star Celebrity Game. Watch as Foxx bemusedly decides to depart mid-interview after his relationship with Katie Holmes got brought up.

Someone should have mentioned to SportsCenter's Michael Smith that it's always good to know one's audience when diving into an interview like this. Jamie Foxx was getting physically and mentally prepared for the All-Star Celebrity game on Friday night, and in agreeing to take the interview, he probably expected the entire conversation would revolve around that night's game, and basketball in general. But then Smith went and tried to make the subject matter a little more personal by bringing up some recently released Valentine's Day paparazzi shots, in which Foxx and girlfriend Katie Holmes were heading to play basketball themselves. And as seen in the clip, that's when the Oscar-winning celeb popped his headphones off and started removing the other microphone equipment, with a look of "WTF" incredulousness covering his face.

Throughout his decades-spanning career, Jamie Foxx has never been known for putting his personal life on display for the world, and he's largely remained free from tabloid headlines during that time. Dating Katie Holmes changed that, of course, but the couple are still about as low-key as can be. So it's understandable that Foxx did not think an ESPN chat during All-Star Weekend was a great place to wax on about how his love life is going. Legit question: has anyone ever pranced away from a failed interview so gracefully before?

To be fair, Michael Smith wasn't trying to turn into an investigative reporter with his rather lighthearted question. And considering Foxx and Holmes were going to play basketball, at least Smith had a relevant in-road to take. So Foxx could have just brushed the question aside, either humorously or forcefully, while still carrying on with the talk. Something about the look on his face, though, made it seem like he was already set to deflect a relationship question in whatever way possible, so it's possible he'd been getting a ton of Holmes-related questions and comments from people recently, with this interview being the last straw.

Reportedly, Tom Cruise no longer wants anything to do with his 11-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise, and he even asked the manager of his official Facebook fan page not to allow pictures of her posted there because he does not want to see her. These allegations sound wild, but might not be too far-fetched. In fact, they appear to underscore previous claims saying Tom Cruise has not had contact with his youngest daughter in ages. Here is how this recent news breaks down. The page's manager, someone named Maryann Carter, allegedly posted,

The statement, which New Idea captured in screenshots, sounds like something the fan page's manager could have requested without Tom Cruise's knowledge. However, the call apparently came from the Mission Impossible actor himself (or so the fan page's manager made it seem). When a commenter asked if all pictures or just new ones were off limits, Maryann Carter wrote,

Say what? Not cool! It would be an entirely different matter if Tom Cruise asked people not to post pictures of his daughter out of respect for her privacy. In fact, that request could have garnered an entirely different article about what a great dad he was, even though he reportedly rarely sees Suri Cruise. But the "no longer part of his life" bit is vile and adds support to claims Tom Cruise has had zero contact with his daughter in years. But remember, we're basing this information on something a Facebook page's manager claimed. Who really knows?

Back in September a source for In Touch asserted it had been four years since Suri Cruise last saw her dad, and the severing of ties supposedly happened because Scientology apparently prevented Tom Cruise from having contact with his daughter. Allegedly, the church labeled Katie Holmes "a suppressive person," someone the actor must avoid to get to be successful in the next phase of his life, which includes work projects, connections with a small circle, and more Scientology.

So, Tom Cruise perhaps has dropped the ball on parenthood. On the other hand, Katie Holmes seems to have stepped up, and there is a significant chance she wants Tom Cruise and Scientology to go away. After all, Holmes seems happier than ever. She and Suri Cruise appear to love their life in New York City, with Holmes taking acting projects while Suri Cruise is in sixth grade. In fact, the 38-year-old actress from Toledo, Ohio, has been enjoying a life rejuvenation of sorts. She reportedly is now free to date Jamie Foxx, her Hollywood beau of a few years, in public. The actors recently held hands for a stroll along a Malibu beach on a breezy day, and they let the paparazzi capture pictures. First, let's discuss Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes' courtship. They did not just meet this year and start going around holding hands. In 2013, a year after Holmes divorced Tom Cruise, the media noticed Holmes and Foxx flirting at a charity event in the Hamptons, but Foxx later denied rumors of romance. Then in 2015, pictures leaked to the internet and showed Foxx and Holmes canoodling at a recording studio. Then the Ocean's Eight and Kennedys actress appeared at Foxx's birthday party in NYC that year.

Six months went by, and then Claudia Jordan from The Real Housewives of Atlanta confirmed in a podcast interview that her pal, Jamie Foxx, was dating Katie Holmes. However, Jordan later recanted and said that she had misspoken. (Why?)

Recently, the Ray Donovan and Ocean's 8 actress took to Instagram, where she shared an incredible photo of her family on a hill overlooking Los Angeles. Based on the pictures Holmes has shared in recent weeks, it looks like the family has had a chance to spend wonderful quality time together this year. And Suri is looking similar to Katie Holmes in each of them.

These days, Katie Holmes is still busy acting, as well as being a mother, promoting The Kennedys: After Camelot, a Reelz miniseries which retraces the movements of the former First Lady of the United States, Jacqueline Kennedy, in her world after the assassination of her husband, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The miniseries serves as a follow-up to the controversial Emmy-winning miniseries The Kennedys from 2011, which starred Greg Kinnear as JFK.

Katie Holmes directed the third episode of The Kennedys: After Camelot, giving her a second credit as director. Last year, Katie Holmes made her directorial debut with the indie film All We Had, in which she starred as a single mother struggling to make a good life for her daughter. According to People, Katie Holmes kept Suri Cruise by her side for the filming of After Camelot. Jon Cassar, who directed the whole of the miniseries, said Holmes made the experience extra special for her daughter and even made a chair that said 'Director' for her. Holmes's After Camelot co-star, Kristin Booth, who has a 5-year-old daughter, said it was a delight to watch Suri Cruise show up to the set to play dress up just like her mom. Booth also praised Holmes for her ability to juggle motherhood with a hectic Hollywood career.

If there's any justice All We Had will now be the springboard for a rejuvenation of her career not just as an actress but as a filmmaker, too. Katie Holmes' impressive directorial debut is peppered with fine performances and stretches what could easily be run-of-the-mill drudgery into a touching, albeit inconsistent, portrayal of modern working class America. Katie Holmes showcases a knack for eking out downtrodden drama and keeping it interesting while also allowing it to unfold in a desperately realistic fashion, although it never quite plunges into the all out despair it teases.

While All We Had's stories are hardly original or revelatory there are one or two truly affecting scenes. Katie Holmes structures them well, too, as she moves the point of view from Rita to Ruthie and back again to keep things fresh, and she never burdens the film with melodrama or cliche, instead letting you just get a sense of how desperate their situation has become.

All We Had's opening scenes of depravity hang over the remainder of the film as the threat of financial implosion looms, as you hope that Rita and Ruthie don't fall back into homelessness. But once it takes up residency All We Had plateaus, and unfolds as more of a series of vignettes rather than a cognitive piece that builds. But a career best performance from Katie Holmes, and startling work from Stefania LaVie, means that _All We Had _is always probing for emotion, with its human moments giving it an earnestness that's a little naïve but uplifting.

All We Had eventually takes the easy route out, and folds things up in a rushed and underwhelming fashion. But there's more than enough to deem Katie Holmes's first outing as director a triumph, and she deserves further opportunities to develop her skills within the confines of a stronger story.

Co-founded by Robert De Niro to help rejuvenate Lower Manhattan in the wake of the September 11 attacks, the Tribeca Film Festival has always placed an emphasis on touching, personal and unique stories that come from across the length and breadth of the world.

It also gives major movie stars the opportunity to flex their creative muscles. Rather than the special effects, mainstream-aimed, and CGI-heavy blockbusters that most of them produce in Hollywood with major studios, their output at Tribeca consists of smaller, independent movies that are more character driven. The 2016 Tribeca Film Festival is no different. In fact, this year we have efforts from, to name but a few, Tom Hanks, Tom Hiddleston, Eddie Murphy, Michael Shannon, Kevin Spacey, and Ricky Gervais to contend with. What are the main highlights of the festival, though? Well, have a gander below to find out.

A Hologram For The King

The world needs a regular dose of Tom Hanks. Whether it’s just perusing his Twitter account to make yourself feel better, re-watching Big, or waiting eagerly for his latest release, everything feels better when Hanks is in your life. The Tribeca Film Festival has got your back in that regard, as it features a brand new film from Tom Hanks in the shape of A Hologram For The King.

Written and directed by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer, The International, Cloud Atlas), it tells the tale of Tom Hanks’ Alan Clay, a desperate American salesman who travels to Saudi Arabia to secure an IT contract for a huge complex being built in the middle of a desert. Even though the first trailer was admittedly a little underwhelming, the presence of Tom Hanks means that A Hologram For The King immediately has something going for it.

Elvis & Nixon

Based upon one of the most famous images of all time, Elvis & Nixon, rather unsurprisingly, revolves around the morning of December 21, 1970, when Elvis Presley arrived at the White House and requested a meeting with President Richard Nixon. What did The King Of Rock And Roll want? To be sworn in as an undercover agent in the Bureau Of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.

But while the plot for this film is undoubtedly intriguing, the biggest appeal is getting to see two of the most talented actors of the last 20 years pitting their talents against each other as two iconic figures. Kevin Spacey has spent the last few years as Frank Underwood in House Of Cards, while Michael Shannon continually excels whenever he is on screen, be it in Midnight Special or even when he’s just playing a corpse in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

For The Love Of Spock

It’s not just feature films that we should be excited about ahead of the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. The documentary Ghostheads explores the extreme side of Ghostbusters fandom ahead of the reboot’s release, while For The Love Of Spock takes a look at the life and career of Leonard Nimoy and his iconic character Mr. Spock. Not only will it use interviews with various cast and crew members from Star Trek, but it will also include discussions with fans from conventions, and it's being narrated by Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the current incarnation of the franchise. For The Love Of Spock has also been directed by Nimoy’s son Adam. So expect it to be a tender and emotional cinematic journey.

High-Rise

With Kill List, Sightseers, and A Field In England, Ben Wheatley has created vivid and violent movies that are as striking as they are unique. They’re also concise and wonderfully pulpy, too, with the filmmaker always leaving the audience wanting more.

Audiences at Tribeca will be able to quench that thirst with High-Rise, which sees the director dipping his toe into mainstream waters. Not only is it based on the novel of the same name from J.G. Ballard, but its trailer suggests that High-Rise has been made with a bigger budget than Ben Wheatley has used before. Plus it has a fabulous array of mainstream actors including Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, and Elisabeth Moss. Fingers crossed it still possess the same scintillating style of filmmaking that we’re used to from Ben Wheatley. Encouragingly, reviews from across Europe suggest that’s the case.

Special Correspondents

We’ve got quite a lot to look forward to from Ricky Gervais between now and the end of 2016. Not only is he returning to, arguably, his greatest comic creation David Brent with Life On The Road, but he’s also written and directed Special Correspondents. Based on the French comedy of the same name, Gervais and his co-star Eric Bana play two journalists who pretend that they’re reporting live from a war-torn country, even though they’re actually just in New York. Ricky Gervais has been able to get an all-star cast involved in the project, as it will also include Vera Farmiga, Kelly Macdonald, Kevin Pollak. Benjamin Bratt, America Ferrera, and Raul Castillo. But those of you who can’t get to Tribeca don’t need to fret, because Special Correspondents will debut on Netflix as early as April 29.

Hunt For The Wilderpeople

There’s a good chance that most of you already know about Taika Waititi thanks to his delightful 2014 comedy What We Do In The Shadows. If you don’t, then you soon will, because he’s co-written Disney’s Moana, due out later this year, and is also directing Thor: Ragnarok.

But he’s not gone all Hollywood just yet, because Taika Waititi’s latest film Hunt For The Wilderpeople is proudly Kiwi and is screening at Tribeca after premiering at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in January. It revolves around a recently bereaved uncle and his young foster nephew out in the wild trying to survive, while child services and a manhunt try to find them. It’s already broken box office records in New Zealand, and possesses an impressive cast that includes Flight Of The Conchords’ Rhys Darby and the legend that is Sam Neill.

The Man Who Knew Infinity

If you’re looking for some potential awards-season fodder, then Tribeca has that in droves, too. Based on Robert Kanigel’s book, The Man Who Knew Infinity tells the true story of Srinivasa Ramanujan, who grew up in India but during World War I, gained admittance to Cambridge University, where he became one of the most influential mathematicians in history thanks to his work with professor G.H. Hardy. Dev Patel and Jeremy Irons take the lead roles, and as it’s English, a period piece, and revolves around tortured geniuses, the film was obviously intended to be in contention come awards season. Unfortunately, after premiering at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, it failed to generate the buzz to make it a serious contender. But that doesn’t mean that it is isn’t any good. We shall see.

Mr. Church

Speaking of a cheeky awards contender, how about Eddie Murphy for Best Actor? Seriously! Mr. Church sees Eddie Murphy starring opposite Tomorrowland’s Britt Robertson, and it tells the story of the unlikely and unique friendship that develops after a dying woman hires a cook to care for her 11-year-old daughter.

Mr. Church is due to premiere at Tribeca Film Festival, so we’re not yet sure if Eddie Murphy’s performance is genuinely awards season fodder. However, the fact that Warner Bros. already is touting a release date of November 2016, suggests that they will be pushing Murphy for accolades. Stay tuned for our coverage of the film and the entire festival itself to see if it’s really worthy, though.

Nerdland

The debut of Nerdland’s trailer last month immediately got film fans excited about the adult animated comedy, which is led by the vocal talents of Paul Rudd and Patton Oswalt.

Written by Se7en’s Andrew Kevin Walker, Nerdland is set in Hollywood and revolves around Patton Oswalt and Paul Rudd’s aspiring screenwriter and actor, respectively, who decided that they have to become famous before their 30th birthdays. This provokes the pair to go to increasing extremes to reach their level of fame. It’s not just Paul Rudd and Patton Oswalt that will be bringing the funny in Nerdland, because Hannibal Buress, Mike Judge, and Molly Shannon as well as many others are providing vocals for the film, too. Director Chris Prynoski will be hoping it makes the same splash that fellow R-rated animated comedy Sausage Party did at SXSW just last month.

All We Had

Do you ever find yourself wondering just what happened to Katie Holmes? Well, thanks to the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, now you have your answer. Because the Batman Begins actress’ debut outing as director, All We Had, is debuting at the event. Katie Holmes also stars as Rita Carmichael, the struggling mother to her young daughter Ruthie, played by Stefania Owens. The pair move to a new town to start afresh, but that starts to turn sour as they’re unable to find their footing because of the Great Recession. Based on Annie Weatherwax’s 2014 novel of the same name, All We Had is a proudly feminine coming of age tale, and it might help to remind the world of just how talented Katie Holmes is in front of the camera, while showcasing her burgeoning abilities behind it, too.

Dawson’s Creek redefined television for a whole generation of teens and young adults in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Even though the show ended in 2003, many fans are still looking for a reunion (hopefully in the TV movie vein). But, it looks like Katie Holmes is here to put an end to all that talk.

Katie Holmes talked to TODAY on NBC and revealed that she doesn’t think a reunion would work now. And, not for the obvious reason of many of the former Dawson’s Creek stars still having busy careers. Apparently, Holmes thinks the world just isn’t simple enough anymore to capture the feeling of the original show.

She is right that the late ‘90s time of Dawson’s Creek sort of makes it special. The feeling of that time (the show debuted in 1998) seems like it was very much pre-everything looking back. It was a time when most people still didn’t have cell phones, and no one could play music or video on the ones that were around. That means that pretty much no one was glued to any phone for communication or entertainment purposes. A lot of people didn’t even have email addresses yet, and the phone book was still the most reliable way to find a business or person you were looking for. It all feels very innocent now.

Not that Dawson’s Creek was some idealized version of teen life. The soapy teen drama covered a lot of emotional ground in six seasons. The show focused on Dawson (James Van Der Beek), Joey (Katie Holmes), Pacey (Joshua Jackson) and Jen (Michelle Williams), a group of friends living in Capeside, a (fictional) Cape Cod town in Massachusetts. They dealt with the standard teen troubles along with homosexuality and sexual health issues.

There were even concerns about the show from some TV critics and consumer watchdog groups over the sometimes “racy” plots and dialogue featured on the show. But, that same edge, along with mature dialogue which was absent of typical teen-show slang, endeared the program to many critics. Variety even called it “the teenage equivalent of a Woody Allen movie.”

Katie Holmes might be right. Dawson’s Creek may have existed in a time that wouldn’t allow for the show to remake itself today, even with the participation of the old cast. Maybe it’s just as well. Some things need to be preserved in the past.

Earlier this week, a rumor began circulating that the recently divorced Katie Holmes was spending a lot of time with and possibly dating Jake Gyllenhaal. The two were supposedly introduced by Joshua Jackson of Mighty Ducks fame and have been hitting it off like Connie and Guy. Today, the actress’ representative blasted those reports for being untrue, and a source close to the actor denied there being anything to the relationship, as well.

The original whispers first emerged in the Italian gossip tabloid Grazia. They were then reported to English-speaking audiences by MTV Europe and round and round the rumor went until it was officially squashed by the statement to Gossip Cop. Conceivably, Holmes’ rep could be lying to cover up a budding relationship the actress still wants to keep secret, but more than likely, that would have led to a no comment, not a full scale denial.

After her lengthy relationship with Cruise, Holmes has plenty of activities on her mind outside of dating. She’s currently performing on Broadway, and she still has young Suri to raise. Someday she’ll definitely get back to being one of the most beautiful and famous women on the available market, but with the rest of her life ahead of her, there’s really no rush at this point.

That being said, there’s something about a Gyllenhaal/ Holmes combination that makes sense; so, if they’re both single and looking at the same time in the future, they should look into having dinner.

Tom Cruise has been accused of a lot since his wife Katie Holmes filed for divorce a little less than a month ago. From his belief in Scientology to a supposed controlling nature, outlets have dug deep to bash Tom for a variety of issues, both true and false, but one area even most of the harshest critiques have stayed away from is Tom’s relationship with his daughter, Suri.

The six-year-old was reportedly the main focus of the divorce settlement negotiations, and all involved seem to agree Tom legitimately wants to spend as much time with his little girl as possible. Not surprisingly, Cruise is reportedly spitting mad about the accusatory headline. His attorney told TMZ Tom talked to his daughter every single night on the phone while he was shooting his newest film in Iceland and came to see her as soon as there was a break in production. Citing the last two days of headlines, lawyer Bert Fields went on to say his client has never abandoned his daughter, nor would he ever abandon his daughter.

Tom has a long history of suing tabloids for making false claims. He’s won several judgments in the past too. Whether he’ll move forward this time is unclear. We’ll keep you updated.

Tom Cruise has spent the past two-plus decades living under a microscope and in a sea of photographers, but ever since his wife Katie Holmes filed for divorce a few weeks ago, it’s been even crazier. The entire family has been almost continuously followed, and thousands of articles have been written dissecting even their smallest actions.

This morning, Cruise got a chance to spend some more time with his daughter Suri, but unfortunately, the two’s trip from a hotel to a helicopter wound up devolving into a chase scene not unlike ones seen in the actor’s movies. Red lights were reportedly run and speeds were increased, all in an effort to get Suri away from the glaring lens of the paparazzi.

I get the impulse. It’s not really fair for a little girl to have a camera stuck in her face everywhere she goes. Any good parent would want to keep his or her daughter away from that mess, but in this case, Cruise’s desire to protect may have endangered Suri more. Running a few red lights isn’t exactly safe, and the photographers supposedly didn’t have any qualms about running the lights themselves. In the end, they reportedly didn’t wind up with any great pictures, but maybe Cruise should have just given in and prevented the chase.

Based on her apparent hate for Scientology, most observers thought Katie Holmes would pick a different religion moving forward, maybe even return to the same Catholicism in which she was raised, but I’m not sure anyone realized how quickly the entire transformation would take place. Almost immediately after signing the divorce settlement with soon-to-be ex Tom Cruise, the actress apparently walked down the street to St. Francis Xavier in New York City and asked what she needed to do to become a member.

According to The Huffington Post, most Church members haven’t seen Katie inside the building yet, but her name reportedly now appears among registered parishioners. In addition to Holmes and a few other celebrities, St Francis’ also boasts numerous gay and lesbian members who worship openly thanks to very accepting and inviting local policies.

Given the religious restrictions imposed in the divorce settlement, it’s unclear whether Katie will be allowed to take Suri to church with her on Sundays, but since she’s already joined, one would imagine she’s either planning to show the little girl the ropes or else hire a regular babysitter for an hour or so every weekend from this point forward.

Clearly, whatever Katie found in Scientology wasn’t enough for her to find comfort or sustained happiness. Hopefully, a return to her childhood beliefs will give her the peace and strength needed to be a wonderful mother and the smiley girl we all fell in love with on Dawson’s Creek.

Tom Cruise may have gotten up to some secret agent shenanigans in the Mission Impossible series, but apparently, all that time playing Ethan Hunt didn’t make him an expert in monitoring the movements of his own wife. Reports are starting to circulate that Katie Holmes snuck around her husband’s back for weeks, taking care of all the little things she needed to before dropping the divorce bombshell on her husband.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Holmes, fearful her husband might catch wind of the plan, had a friend purchase a disposable cell phone and then used it to hire not one, not two but three different law firms in three different states in order to protect herself wherever a judge’s ruling ultimately went down.

The now estranged couple’s lawyers spent almost the entire weekend hammering out a settlement that worked for all involved. How much Katie’s pre-planning helped is impossible to know, but as per everyone involved, she seems to have made out well. No one is talking money, but the actress will receive primary custody of Suri, as well as an order forbidding her soon-to-be ex-husband from indoctrinating the little girl into the ways of Scientology, at least until she’s old enough to make a decision for herself.

Exactly why Katie went to such crazy measures to set it all up instead of just moving out is unclear, but no doubt Scientology’s biggest critics will find a way to point the finger at the Church somehow.

In the wake of news of her unavoidably public divorce from Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes has been pounding the pavement to re-invigorate her long-slumbering career. Shortly after she stepped out of her new New York home to do guest appearance on the upcoming season of Project Runway, People uncovered that Holmes has a passion project in the works that centers on the life of a single mom and her daughter.

The film, titled Molly, is close to Holmes on several counts. Not only is she currently seeking sole custody of Suri, her daughter with Cruise, but she also co-wrote and will co-produce the movie. There's no word yet on if she will star, but it seems likely this could well be a project she's groomed for her return. Little else is known about the project at present, but as the paparazzi is tirelessly tracking Holmes' every move, updates on the film are sure to follow soon. Molly is slated to go into production in New York next month.

Following that, Holmes is scheduled to star opposite Gossip Girl star Chase Crawford in the romantic comedy Responsible Adults. If you're thinking Crawford seems a li'l bit young to play Holmes' love interest, well that’s exactly the point. The film centers on a romance between a 30-year-old med student whose brewing romance with a winsome 22-year-old is threatened when she realizes she was once his babysitter. It's a cringe-inducing premise that could certainly score laughs (hell, it worked on The Inbetweeners), and it'll be nice to see Holmes return to something light-hearted (I'm absolving her of Jack and Jill as I think we all should). Plus, there's something strangely perfect about casting a Dawson's Creek alum opposite a Gossip Girl castmember for a May-December—or May-September really—romance as the former was totally a pioneer that made the latter possible. But really, it's just good to have Holmes back on the scene at all. And to her credit, she's mixing it up, going from what seems to be an intimate drama to a cheeky rom-com, and all hot on the heels of wrapping a modern-day adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull. Brava, Katie!

Over the last week, Scientology has taken a beating in the press. From exposes on its Sea Organization to wild stories about children being subjected to questions about their parents, guarded truths and strange rumors have been on the front pages of major newspapers since Katie Holmes filed the paperwork needed to divorce Tom Cruise, supposedly to shield their daughter from Scientology’s influence.

Every major religion has its share of skeletons in the closet and fanatics at the forefront. Considering how interested in Scientology many Americans suddenly are, it’s not a surprise to see so many negative things being written; however, it is a surprise to see how little any of the major outlets have been saying positively about the Church. Calling Scientology a cult isn’t a fringe opinion, it seems to be what just about everyone outside the religion actually thinks.

Ordinarily, people are very quick to chastise a woman for ending a marriage when there wasn’t infidelity, abuse or addiction involved. The divorce rate may be a bit pathetic in America, but people still like to see relationships work out for the benefit of the children. In Holmes’ case, however, large segments of the population are vehemently defending her for walking away over Cruise’s belief system.

But is Scientology really that bad? Is it overtly worse than the major religions or have people just gotten a negative impression of it thanks to a few bad apples in the bunch? What do you think? Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are done. The actress reportedly blindsided her husband with divorce papers yesterday, and by all accounts, he’s pretty devastated about it. The two first began dating in April of 2005, and within a few months, they announced she was pregnant. Suri was born the following April, and her parents were married in November of 2006. Rumors of trouble began almost immediately, but over the past few years, those whispers largely vanished, at least until today when Holmes’ representative put out a statement shocking everyone with the abrupt split.

According to TMZ, Katie has apparently decided to go for the throat in the proceedings because she’s already asked the judge to give her sole custody of young Suri. In addition to complete control over her daughter, she also reportedly wants child support and a split of marital assets. Cruise and Holmes signed a prenup prior to their marriage, but I guess she’s not excited about living up to the agreement she signed. I can’t imagine a judge will find reason to tear up the document, but I suppose we’ll see when this case progresses that far.

Ordinarily, when a Hollywood divorce comes down the pipeline, it’s really not altogether surprising. Given how willingly friends and acquaintances normally are to talk, the public typically gets wind of problems as they’re happening. In this case, we’ve heard almost nothing, which means Katie and Tom have been really secretive or this whole mess really came out of nowhere.

Broadway productions of Anton Chekov's The Seagull have attracted big-name casts in the past, with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard and Carey Mulligan all starring together in a recent rendition of the classic play. And now that a version of The Seagull is heading to the screen, an equally high-profile list of names has signed on-- though with at least one totally inexplicable casting choice thrown in there for good measure. According to Variety, actor Christian Camargo will be making his directorial debut with an adaptation of the play, and has attracted talents like William Hurt, Jean Reno and Allison Janney to star-- oh, and also Katie Holmes.

This version of the story will switch the action from Russia to rural New England, where a family gathers over Memorial Day weekend and havoc ensues as "a family confronts the volatile and fragile nature of love." As in the original, one of the main characters is a famous actress (played by Janney) who returns to the estate owned by her ill brother (Hurt). Holmes will be playing the character who started off in the original Chekov named Masha, but will surely have her name changed; she gets caught up in a love triangle among several people, because in classic Chekov fashion, there are a gazillion people in this play and it's nearly impossible to keep them all straight at this point.

There's not really much to say about the top-flight cast the film has attracted, but the inclusion of Holmes sure has me puzzled-- was there not a young actress available who had similar talents to the rest of the cast? It's not exactly like Holmes has been absent from acting since she married Tom Cruise, but it sure feels like it-- she had roles in the little-seen The Son of No One, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, The Extra Man and The Romantics, and it's probably kinder just to forget she was part of Jack and Jill. I'll be rooting for her to pull out all the stops and make this role her own, but especially considering the talent she'll be acting with, it's going to be quite the challenge.

There's been no end of drama and controversy surrounding the Kennedy clan over the years, so it's only fitting that the recent miniseries about them set tongues a-wagging as well. As anyone who watched The Daily Show's hard-hitting investigatory segment knows, The Kennedys miniseries was originally due to premiere on the History Channel before the network backed out earlier this year. Eventually, the show found a new home at ReelzChannel, which left interested audience members both relieved and surprised to learn there was a thing called ReelzChannel.

Now Muse Distribution International has announced that the Kennedys miniseries will be coming to DVD on May 15th, exclusively via shoptheshows.com. The three-disc set will list for $39.95 and will include 45 minutes of bonus footage, including a "Making of The Kennedys" featurette. Even better news for those interested, The Kennedys is currently on sale for $29.99.

For those not in the know, the miniseries charted the course of several generations of the infamous Kennedy dynasty, from the 1930s up through 1968. Naturally, it covers all the expected historical moments such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, but also spends plenty of time on the relationships behind the scenes. The cast includes Greg Kinnear, Barry Pepper, Katie Holmes, and Tom Wilkinson. The series was co-written and exec produced by 24's Joel Surnow, so chances are good there's at least one scene where JFK saws off a guy's head with a hacksaw.

The Guillermo del Toro-produced Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark was one of the last projects Miramax put into production before decided it wanted to focus on mining its back catalog rather than producing new content. As a result the movie got kind of lost in the limbo, absent a distributor who cared about it, despite the fact that it starred Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce and, based on a teaser trailer released last summer, looked genuinely terrifying.

Now, at last, the movie has found itself a home. FilmDistrict has acquired the U.S. rights to Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark and is planning an August 12 release-- a nice end-of-summer spot for a horror movie. The remake of the 1973 horror film stars child actress Bailee Madison as a girl who started hearing voices from the basement of the new home where she's moved with her father (Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Holmes). The film is directed by Troy NIxey, making his directorial debut under del Toro's tutelage.

We've been excited about this project since the Comic Con panel, and glad to see del Toro succeed in his latest effort to save modern horror from its self-created woes. Glad to see this story have a happy ending.

The first trailer for The Romantics has popped online courtesy of Apple. Starring Katie Holmes, Anna Paquin, Josh Duhamel, Malin Akerman, Candice Bergen and Elijah Wood, the film centers on a wedding which reunites a group of seven friends, but conflict emerges due to the fact that both the bride and the maid of honor are in love with the groom. The trailer, however, seems to ask more questions than it answers.

The trailer does a fine job explaining the narrative, but is this supposed to be a comedy or a drama? The IMDb page suggests both, but where are the laughs? Also, if you know that there's an emotional connection between the man you are marrying and an old friend, why on Earth do you put her in the wedding party, let alone invite her to the wedding to begin with? Elijah Wood's character calls Anna Paquin the bane of Katie Holmes' existence. And if that's true, why does Holmes even show up? Hopefully the movie will do a better job explaining this.

Quirk is probably as emblematic of Sundance at this point as Robert Redford-- stories about misfit families or shaggy loners with bizarre habits are perennial favorites up here in the mountains, to the point that you can read the synopsis for a movie about a carnival barker with lupus or a family of rodeo clowns and say "Yup, that's a Sundance movie."

So what to make of something like The Extra Man, which crams about a dozen Sundance quirk tropes into just two of its characters? Unfortunately the third film from American Splendor directors Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini is so interested in its own oddball delights that is veers very, very close to disaster. Engaging performances from Paul Dano and Kevin Kline keep things watchable and moving along, but as the movie enters its third act with ancient socialites and a transvestite club, there's a distinct feeling of "That's all?" The premiere audience I watched it with last night, with the cast in the crowd, had been laughing all along but was clearly as mystified as I was.

Based on the novel by Jonathan Ames, who is a creator of the quirky but more successful HBO series Bored to Death, The Extra Man follows the adventures of Louis Ives (Paul Dano, clearly an avatar for the author) as he leaves his high school English teaching job in the suburbs for a more exciting, literary life in Manhattan. Louis is apparently the last twentysomething in New York who searches the classifieds instead of Craigslist, and finds a room on the Upper East Side living alongside Henry Harrison (Kevin Kline), a one-of-a-kind eccentric who still vaguely resembles every kooky old man you've ever seen onscreen. Henry is a formerly promising playwright living in a moldering apartment and clinging to a battered old car, and his only source of income is serving as an "extra man" escort to society dowagers.

Louis, because of some weird attachment to F. Scott Fitzgerald and an overly literary mind that most people drop by sophomore year, is totally into this, and begins training as an extra man himself. Meanwhile he's working a job at an environmental magazine alongside a hippie hottie (Katie Holmes, trying hard but not getting anywhere). Oh, and Louis is also sort of a cross-dresser, a quirk that seems to serve no purpose beyond setting up an obvious third-act conflict between him and Henry, and actually seems kind of insulting to people with actual gender confusion. An ad promising New York's hottest tranny bar? Puh-lease.

And I haven't even told you about John C. Reilly's performance as an abundantly hairy neighbor with a high-pitched voice, or the Swiss hunchback who stole Henrys' greatest play, or Katie Holmes singing a song about a concrete plant. The meaningless quirks keep on coming, and instead of building a unique world-- which I assume was the appeal of Ames's novel for the directors-- they feel like padding slapped on to a narrative too thin and unbelievable to sustain itself. The basic bizarreness is funny for a long time, until you realize it's not leading you anywhere, and you've spent two hours with people as removed as possible from actual reality.

Given the starry cast, The Extra Man will probably get picked up before too long, and can sell itself based on Kline's hammy performance, Dano's sensitive one, and the promise of seeing a lot of weird stuff in a short running time. But The Extra Man is primarily a giant disappointment, proof that quirk without direction or purpose can feel just as boring as a story about more ordinary people.

The star-studded indie-comedy The Romantics is swapping Liv Tyler for Katie Holmes, according to Variety. No word on why Liv was bumped in favor of Mrs. Tom Cruise, but I’d maybe it has something to do with the fact that not only is Katie now starring in the movie, she’s also taken over as executive producer. Sorry Liv, she’s the boss and she wants a part. See ya.

The Romantics is about eight friends reuniting around a wedding. Anna Paquin is already on board to play the bride and Katie Holmes is her maid of honor. Also already involved are, Malin Akerman, Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, Jeremy Strong, Josh Duhamel and Optimus Prime. What? I just assume he goes wherever Josh Duhamel goes. Admit it, this would be a better movie if he did.
