Katy Perry went viral this weekend for her sassy response to Justin Bieber pulling out a laptop and scrolling YouTube videos for a portion of his Coachella headlining debut on Saturday. Fans loved seeing Justin Trudeau accompany Perry to the music festival just months after he took her to the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. The dress code for this weekend event was decidedly less formal, as one fan posted pics from both events and noted on X (Twitter):

Hey, I’m not saying that one shouldn’t take the time for important things like the World Economic Forum, but Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau make a compelling case for getting out and having some fun as well.

Justin Bieber made his highly anticipated Coachella headlining debut on April 11, and the response has been … interesting. His set included tracks from last year’s SWAG and SWAG II, as well as earlier hits and even YouTube clips, including his viral “standing on business” paparazzi confrontation. Many fans had thoughts on his choice to break out his laptop and start surfing YouTube, including Katy Perry, who was in the crowd and shared an A+ reaction.

For a portion of Justin Bieber’s 90-minute Coachella set, the singer sat on a stool behind a laptop and scrolled through videos of his earlier music. His YouTube medley reportedly included “Baby” — supposedly a favorite of his son Jack Blues — “Never Say Never” and the cover of Ne-Yo's “So Sick” that famously got him discovered by Scooter Braun. Katy Perry documented her Coachella journey alongside beau Justin Trudeau, with one slide from her Instagram post showing the Biebs pulling up a video from behind his laptop, to which Perry says:

I’m sure her sassy remark was good-natured, but Katy Perry did appear to be unimpressed with what was an extended period of silence from the headliner as he searched for his desired video. Can you imagine having that dead air broken up by a commercial while Bieber waited the 5 seconds until he was allowed to “Skip Ad”? That would have been unforgivable.

The “Roar” singer wasn’t the only one critical of that aspect of the performance, for which Justin Bieber was reportedly paid $10 million. One X (Twitter) user wrote:

I have no doubt that they had only praise for Justin’s set.

While much of the response has been pretty critical, Katy Perry’s comment leaned into the humor of the situation, and from the rest of her post, it definitely looks like she enjoyed her day at Coachella. How Justin Bieber feels about his evening remains unknown.

Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau are officially a couple, and the two have received quite a bit of attention since their relationship became public knowledge. At this point, neither of them have spoken in depth about their reported relationship. However, it would now seem that at least one person within the personal orbit of Trudeau (54) and Perry (41) has shared a few comments. On top of all that, though, it’s just sweet to hear that the “Til The Nights Done” singer is just pleased that his father is happy for his dad.

Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau were first romantically linked around July 2025 and, at the time, the Internet had a field day. What many made note of, at the time, was the fact that at that point, Perry had only recently announced that she’d separated from fiancé Orlando Bloom. Still, who am I to question the two apparently finding happiness and enjoying each other’s company. Of course, after Xav’s apparent endorsement of the relationship, I’d like to hear others who are close to Trudeau and Perry weigh in as well.

What Happened On Elsbeth That Got People Talking About Katy Perry

Now, the episode of Elsbeth that aired on the 2025 TV schedule on November 22 featured a pop star character who was seemingly inspired by many of the biggest women in pop music. Meanwhile, the mystery itself seems to draw a distinct parallel to a real estate fiasco Katy Perry was in back in 2015.

In this episode of Elsbeth titled “And Then There Were Nuns,” Mother Constance (Dianne Wiest) learns that her convent is being sold to the pop star Alaïa Jade (Lindsey Normington). So, the nun decides to kill the singer by getting her up to the top of the bell tower and making sure she gets hit by the bell and knocked off the building.

Other elements of this episode show which pop stars Alaïa was inspired by, like Taylor Swift, Madonna and Kesha. Plus, her evil producer, Shane Sills (Ben Chase), had the energy of folks like Scott Borchetta, who was infamously involved in the sale of Taylor Swift’s masters.

However, the whole reason why this story involves nuns seems to be tied to a crazy situation Katy Perry was part of years ago, so let’s break that down.

What Actually Happened With Katy Perry, The Catholic Church And A Bad Real Estate Deal

This year, Katy Perry has been in the news for myriad reasons. She went to space, and she and her longtime partner, Orlando Bloom, broke up. However, Elsbeth brought a different story of her's back into the headlines as it seemed to pull inspiration from 2015.

A decade ago, the “Firework” singer tried to buy a former convent in Los Angeles. The Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary lived there from 1970 to 2011, per the New York Times, and the complex was built in 1927.

Then, in 2015, Archbishop Jose Gomez agreed to sell the property to Katy Perry for $14.5 million, per NPR. Meanwhile, the sisters tried to sell it to restaurateur Dana Hollister. That proposal included Hollister paying $15.5 million, and it happened before the pop star’s sale was done.

The sisters were concerned they wouldn’t profit from the deal with the “Roar” singer, and ultimately, this all led to a big legal battle. In July of 2015, Perry and Gomez sued Hollister, and a judge didn’t let her deal go through. So, that invalidated Hollister’s plan, and the pop star went on with hers. However, the fight continued in court.

In 2017, the archdiocese ordered Hollister to pay the attorney fees. She declared bankruptcy, and then, as she went to bankruptcy court in 2018, Sister Catherine Rose Holzman – who was loud about her disapproval of Perry buying the former convent – died during the court proceeding.

According to AD, it’s unknown who owns the property now.

Also, in 2024, Taylor Swift had an issue with her in-ears that caused her to have to take off part of her dress during a concert, and a crew member ultimately assisted her. Leave it to Swift to create a sweet interactive moment like that during a show.

These clothes-related situations may not be fun, but kudos to Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and more for handling them like professionals. Also, if anything, such incidents provide Clarkson and her peers with funny anecdotes they can share later on.

Most of our biggest pop stars make frequent appearances on the red carpets of the world, and do so while stunning us with their daring sartorial choices. The same has always been true for former American Idol judge Katy Perry, who’s wowed the public on many occasions. Well, she just delivered a divine sequined look with a hooded dress, and holy boob tape, Batman!

What Did Katy Perry’s Sequined, Hooded Dress Look Like?

Katy Perry has been a staple of the red carpet since her first hit, “I Kissed a Girl,” climbed the charts in 2008, and the mom of one has pulled off everything from a bikini and netted dress to a very-on-display whale tail while stepping out in her finery. So, it should be no great shock that she has now donned an incredibly glamorous hooded dress that was sequined all over, and also defies gravity in several key areas. Here’s how Perry looked when she arrived at the Breakthrough Prize Awards recently:

Alright, Ms. Perry! Go ‘head witcha bad self! Look, I don’t think anyone can honestly see this photo of the infamous hat-wearer (who went viral for many things at King Charles III’s coronation) and claim that she is anything other than a crystalline vision. Though I do wonder why she’s standing like a statue with her hands oddly placed at her sides, she looks great! Actually, now that I think about it, it’s entirely possible that the lovely lady (who’s had a public wardrobe malfunction or two) is just trying to make sure that all of her bits and bobbins remain artfully arranged under her dress, and don’t come a-poppin’ out.

I have a very intense fascination with anyone who bares skin in a way that makes boob and/or other body tape a necessity. Obviously, if you’re willing to rock it (like Kim Kardashian in her gravity defying white fit, Anne Hathaway in a vivaciously gorgeous gold gown and many others before her), I think everyone who wants to should go for it, I just always wonder about the comfort level and logistics involved. Wait, look at the back of her dress before we continue:

See? At least the front and the back are actually connected, but I can guess that if you make one sudden move in just the wrong direction something, somewhere, could just come right on out. I would be so nervous to do anything but stand stark straight like Perry is in most of the photos of her in this gown.

Also, does she not sweat? There must be celebs who tape themselves into clothes only to flop sweat themselves right out of it, and at quite inopportune times. Or, what about lotion? Can you only grease up the parts of your body that don’t require tape, so that potentially important areas are dry as the Sahara and just as dusty looking by the time you can finally put on some pj’s?

Listen, I don’t have the answers to any of these questions, but luckily I don’t need them. I’m a writer who has already promised herself that if I’m ever invited to a red carpet event, I absolutely will admire the Katy Perrys of the world as I pose for photos in the fanciest pajamas I can afford.

But, after six seasons of bringing her playful personality to the judging panel, a creative two truths and a lie post led to the pop singer revealing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that Season 22 would be her last. Perry has since been replaced by Carrie Underwood. Ahead of Season 23's premiere amid the 2025 TV schedule, the “Teenage Dream” singer talks about being succeeded by Underwood.

The ABC-era American Idol judges have brought a balance of honest critiques mixed in with fun and humorous takes. When it coms to the upcoming Season 23, Carrie Underwood should shake things up alongside current judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. Katy Perry -- who left the show to focus on her new music and other endeavors -- leaves big shoes to fill. However, as Perry explained to People, she's not all that worried about how Underwood will do:

The “Firework” singer is absolutely right. If you look back on Carrie Underwood’s American Idol audition from Season 4, you can tell she was meant for the show. There's a reason she's still one of the Idol's most famous contestants, who, years ago, was fresh-faced 21-year-old and wowed the judge. She memorably booked her trip to Hollywood once she sang her beautiful rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” which showcased her powerful vocals.

As Katy Perry pointed out, the “Before He Cheats” singer knows how it feels to be a contestant, which would allow her to empathize with any nervous contestants going through the process. I have a feeling Carrie Underwood will be able to recognize star talent in the same way that Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson saw something in her. Perry also said this:

While she expressed her hope that rapper Jelly Roll would replace her, Katy Perry also listed the ideal qualities her replacement should have. She noted that said person should be “fearless,” honest, and “a little polarizing.” I'd say that the "Jesus, Take The Wheel" singer ticks all of those boxes and more.

The veteran pop star isn’t the only one who's given their blessing. Lionel Richie understood the decision to have Carrie Underwood on board, especially given her background on the reality competition series. Richie also mentioned that Underwood is “not someone we have to get used to.” Former judge Keith Urban gave a “heck yes” to Underwood joining, and American Idol veteran Simon Cowell weighed in with positive thoughts as well. When it comes to question of whether Idol stars are happy with Underwood's hiring, it would seem the ayes have it.

With Katy Perry happily passing the judge's torch to Carrie Underwood, I can’t wait to see what she'll bring to the table. With the new judge’s philosophy being centered around the importance of blending kindness with honesty, I have a feeling the long-running series will be in good hands. There may have been even more stars in attendance, but this list alone is truly a who’s who of Hollywood. Being there had to be an incredible experience. Leonardo DiCaprio's father and stepmother were the only non-celebrities reported to be in attendance. It must have been a pretty amazing night for them, I'd think.

A few of these names are potentially surprising, but it’s very interesting to see who the Wolf of Wall Street star decided to invite to the event. He and Edward Norton have been friends for a long time. The same goes for DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, who were part of the same real-life poker game that inspired the movie Molly’s Game.

It's also great that Leonardo DiCaprio invited his Catch Me If You Can director Steven Spielberg. The same goes for Guillermo del Toro, who almost directed DiCaprio, as he was originally attached to star in Nightmare Alley before he had to drop out and was replaced by Bradley Cooper. I would have loved to have seen those two meet up at the party. If there’s a chance they could work together down the road that’s a very exciting prospect that they probably talked about.

DiCaprio’s One Upon A Time…In Hollywood co-star Brad Pitt -- along with his serious girlfriend, Ines de Ramon, -- was there, as was his Shutter Island co-star Mark Ruffalo. The Revenant star also invited a couple of people who it looks like he may have gotten to know in his role as a producer. DiCaprio produced Out of the Furnace, which included Casey Affleck in its cast. He also produced Kid 90, the documentary film directed by former Punky Brewster star Soleil Moon Frye.

Needless to say, certainly looks like Leonardo DiCaprio’s birthday party was the hottest ticket in town. Now I just need to figure out how to become his friend before next year.

Anytime there are awards being handed out to musicians, you know Taylor Swift is in the conversation — not only for the inevitable trophies she will leave with, but for how much she’s known to enjoy awards show performances. When MTV’s Video Music Awards hit the 2024 TV schedule this week, Swift went viral for her sweet support of Katy Perry, but some thought that goodwill didn’t extend to other members of Swift’s entourage. Jack Antonoff took some flak from viewers who noticed he was wearing earplugs during the performance, and his response to the backlash is iconic.

Katy Perry was awarded the Video Vanguard Award on Wednesday during MTV’s annual celebration of music videos, and before she took the stage to accept her Moon Person, she performed a medley of her greatest hits. With so many eyes on Taylor Swift dancing the night away, it’s not surprising that people also noticed her longtime friend and producer Jack Antonoff sitting by her, and that he was wearing earplugs (thought by many to be AirPods). Antonoff addressed what some perceived to be shade on social media, writing in a four-part post:

OK, so clearly Jack Antonoff isn’t really sorry, and nor should he be. The earplugs likely didn’t actually keep him from being able to hear Katy Perry belting out songs like “E.T.,” “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls,” but rather protected his eardrums in such a loud environment. His faux apology tour continued:

Rest assured, Bleachers fans, it doesn’t look like earplug-gate is going to ruin the tour. This is a pretty iconic response to what shouldn’t really have been an issue, but the drama is real, because some people were really buying into the theory that Jack Antonoff was being super petty.

To be fair, everybody looked less enthused than Taylor Swift to be watching Katy Perry’s VMAs mashup, but that’s only because the Midnights artist was dancing her ass off. However, as Jack Antonoff stood nearby wearing earplugs, some people thought he was being really disrespectful. Some comments on X (Twitter) included:

Even before Jack Antonoff’s tongue-in-cheek response, though, people defended him, pointing out that his livelihood depends on being able to hear and saying putting in earplugs is not all that uncommon at concerts or similar environments. Fans wrote:

I can understand people thinking he was being disrespectful when they thought he was wearing AirPods, but it should be pointed out that It’s not just those who make their living in the music industry who should consider their eardrums in such situations. I think it’s great that Jack Antonoff doesn’t seem to be taking the criticism too seriously.

Katy Perry’s newest music is all about it being a “Woman’s World,” and that was made clear when the VMAs aired on the 2024 TV schedule. As the “Firework” singer performed a medley of her greatest hits, the audience was dancing right along with her, and that included Taylor Swift. However, while the pop star supporting her fellow pop star was so sweet, I was even more charmed by the UFO dress she was wearing.

Along with many of the biggest names in music, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift’s music videos and careers were celebrated big time at this year’s VMAs. It was a significant night for the “Roar” singer specifically, because she was the recipient of MTV’s Video Vanguard Award. Before her speech, however, she sang a mega-medley of some of her biggest hits, and during it, the camera cut to Swift jamming out to all the songs:

From dramatically reenacting “E.T.” to cutely dancing and singing along to “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream,” Swift was seemingly having a blast as she danced with Suki Waterhouse and Tyla.

However, while all this was adorable, I was also spending time appreciating the “Down Bad” singer’s second look of the evening, which was a sparkly minidress with a UFO on it.

Taylor Swift wore a plaid dress that made her look like she was on her “Vigilante Shit” for the black carpet at the VMAs, and it left fans wondering if Reputation (Taylor’s Version) would be announced at MTV’s award show. However, the questions about the re-release of Reputation are paused for the moment, because Swift’s second look was an incredible minidress that was sparkly and featured a UFO.

It was such a sweet fit that was also edgy, and it went with the plaid moment from earlier in the evening perfectly.

The mini dress is custom MONSE, per the brand’s Instagram. It’s called the “Beaded Tapestry Harness Dress” which is perfect, as it features a gorgeous detailed beaded scene of two figures standing in a field looking up at a UFO.

Notably, when Taylor Swift performs “Down Bad” during the Eras Tour, UFO imagery is used. So, this cute dress seems like a nod to that Tortured Poets Department track, which makes it even better.

After supporting Perry, Swift also got a huge honor at the end of the night as she won Video of the Year for “Fortnight.” She took the stage alongside Post Malone and her creative team, and as she gave her speech, we also got a better look at the ornate and lovely dress she wore throughout most of the award show.

Overall, this whole situation -- Perry's performance, Swift showing her support by dancing and her incredible dress -- was a highlight of the VMAs, and I’ll watch over and over again with a Paramount+ subscription. It’s always wonderful to see women supporting women, and that’s exactly what Swift and Perry did, and of course, they did it in style too!

I feel like we spent weeks and weeks with no news coming down the American Idol pipeline ahead of its return on the 2024 TV schedule. Last spring, Katy Perry exited, and then there wasn't a whole lot of forward momentum. Until this week, when a rumor mentioned Carrie Underwood might be joining, and then the creative team apparently said “eff it,” and made the full announcement. But why was Carrie Underwood chosen, and how long has this been in the works?

As Idol was wrapping Season 22 of the long-running competition series, Katy Perry was bandying ideas like Jelly Roll out in regards to who could replace her. Lionel Richie actually said a former Idol contestant might be a great fit for the gig, but his vote was for Kelly Clarkson. (The busy host of The Kelly Clarkson Show said no.)

Apparently, the powers that be did think a returning Idol star would be a good fit for the gig, however, and they approached another major name: Carrie Underwood.

Idol’s Showrunner Explains Why Carrie Underwood Is A Good Fit

Not only does Carrie Underwood have longtime ties to the reality series, she’s also the Season 4 winner of American Idol. Showrunner and executive producer Megan Wolflick also noted that it has been exactly 20 years since she stood before Simon Cowell and co. and belted it out during her audition. In the time since, she’s won a slew of CMAs and Grammy awards and she also remains popular thanks to doing the NFL’s popular theme song “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night.”

But she's still known for becoming a star on the competition series and returning to her roots felt like a great fit. Given the anniversary timing the “stars aligned” for her to come on the show, per what the producer told ET.

Honestly, Idol has produced a lot of real, actual stars over the years, so the singer might not have been the only person who could have fulfilled this role as an alum of the series. Yet, given what the producer is mentioning about the anniversary, the whole thing just seems to fit together like a nice little puzzle.

Though It Sounds Like The Show May Have Known Carrie Was The Right Fit For A While 

Megan Wolflick had been talking about the “exciting search” to find Katy Perry’s replacement, but while she’s cagey about the timeline here, it seems the production team may have known Underwood was going to pan out, or at least was a major prospect, for a while, now. She said during the interview:

Talks can sometimes take a while for a variety of reasons. Maybe a celebrity isn’t convinced a gig like this is a good fit. Maybe the network and the celebrity are trying to make the schedule work or are feeling one another out while leaving other options open. Maybe Carrie Underwood and ABC were haggling over money. We don’t know for sure what happened, but we do know that finally all parties involved felt comfortable enough to officially welcome Ms. Underwood back into the Idol fold after rumors broke.

In particular, I loved the sweet exchange Underwood had with Ryan Seacrest, who is also an OG within the franchise. After he shared a sweet message welcoming her back to the show in a “full-circle moment,” she responded back, writing, that she, like the producers, sees it as a homecoming of sorts.

The fanbase for singing competitions often gears toward the heartland, which is why so many winners of The Voice and Idol have been country singers. So, Underwood’s return should presumably be a great fit for a show that is widely considered one of the best reality series. We'll find out soon enough when the show returns.

Ever since Katy Perry announced she would be leaving her role as American Idol judge in February, there’s been a lot of discussion about who is going to replace her and sit next to the other two judges, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. According to a new report, Perry’s replacement has allegedly been found and it’s a very popular former winner of the singing competition show. 

Per Deadline, the Season 4 winner of American Idol, Carrie Underwood, will be the replacement. It should be noted that ABC currently has yet to confirm or announce the “Before He Cheats” singer as a new judge. 

Carrie Underwood auditioned for American Idol in 2004, so this year is actually the 20-year anniversary of the singer's viral moment that changed her life forever. She sang Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" for the original judges, and she impressed them enough to head to Hollywood. She reportedly dominated the season by a large margin week to week before winning the title in 2005. 

After that, she released her first album, Some Hearts, which became the best-selling solo female debut album in country music history at the time. Underwood has scored eight Grammy wins over the years out of 16 total nominations, and she's had four top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. She remains one of the biggest country stars and most successful American Idol names. 

Certainly, Carrie Underwood would be able to identify with the experience of being on American Idol and offer some nostalgia for the original series, while also bringing more country flair to the show– since Bryan is also a country singer himself.

The report also claims that the other names ABC had previously been circling for the third judge seat have been Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Pink and Meghan Trainor. However, Pink specifically commented on the speculation, sharing that she didn’t want the gig because she doesn’t “like hurting people’s feelings.”

Katy Perry has been part of American Idol since Season 16 when ABC revived the show with Bryan and Richie as judges. The trio wrapped their last finale together with May 19’s Season 22 closer just a week after ABC officially renewed the singing competition for a 23rd season. To send Perry off, some of the contestants performed a medley of the singer's biggest hits last season. 

Richie recently opened up about knowing he’s going to “miss this group” of judges following Perry’s exit before saying that he believed the replacement needed to be somebody who “identifies with the young culture.” He also pitched Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift as potential judges he’d like to work with. Katy Perry has said she hopes her replacement is “fearless” and “a little polarizing like myself.” 

While American Idol Season 23 is not currently part of the 2024 TV premiere dates for this fall, it's expected to return next year, and it sounds like Carrie Underwood might be coming back with it. 

Katy Perry’s spent the last few years performing as part of the Vegas circuit between 2021 and 2023 and hitting the TV schedule each week as a mainstay on American Idol. Her last new album, Smile, in fact, came out way back in 2020 (and to middling ratings). It’s been time for a new music comeback from the singer for a while, and she pulled out all the stops with robot-looking chaps and a white, underboob-baring bikini for her new song “Woman’s World.” 

Some big names like Zoe Saldaña and Jessica Simpson were all in on the fire emojis  when she dropped the video on Instagram and TikTok ahead of the song’s official release on July 11. Some fans even called the song  a “bop.” You can take a look at the sneak peek of “Woman’s World,” below. 

However, elsewhere on social media, people were less kind about what Ms. Perry has coming up. In fact on X (Twitter) some of the fans were pretty brutal, writing comments in one viral thread that did not pull any punches. (Editor note: Punctuation has been added to these comments for clarity)

Then again, some of them did seem jazzed, writing about the “queen’s comeback” and saying Katy Perry is refreshing in an era where we’ve gotten “so tired of Taylor Swift” and have heard nothing but relationship-oriented pop songs for 18 months. So, we’ll have to wait and see. This level of excitement can also be seen on varying posts:

What’s definitely true is that the music will be dropping just a few short weeks after Katy Perry said goodbye to her American Idol gig. Her exit from Idol six years after joining in 2018 was apparently a good opportunity to push out new music and to set up a comeback in the world of pop music. Co-judges like Lional Ritchie may already miss her, but she has her next career steps planned out.  While “Woman’s World” is only one brief tease of what is to come, it’s clear Ms. Perry is making music a priority again coming up. 

Now, we just need to find out what American Idol has planned for her replacement--though Perry herself has pitched Jelly Roll. 

Personally, I think she’s always been pretty literal when it comes to her song lyrics, and this snippet doesn’t really give me a lot in terms of what to expect from Perry’s new album as a whole. However, there’s one thing for certain: She’s always been able to make an out-of-context bikini look cool.

Several names have been bandied about as possible replacements for Katy Perry, now that the American Idol judge has exited the show. Jelly Roll’s name has come up quite a bit, while Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks expressed interest in the gig. Lionel Richie even had a couple of big names in mind, including the show’s very first winner, Kelly Clarkson. The Emmy-winning daytime talk show host addressed that possibility, and what she said makes a lot of sense.

Between Kelly Clarkson’s history on American Idol and her success as a coach on The Voice, there’s no doubt she’s qualified to replace Katy Perry on the judges table, after the “California Gurls” singer announced she was leaving following Season 22. However, Clarkson explained why that job is not in the cards for her, telling ET:

Following a long and tumultuous divorce from Brandon Blackstock, Kelly Clarkson had to make some big changes, including getting out of Los Angeles. She moved production of The Kelly Clarkson Show to New York, which caused her to have to quit The Voice after nine seasons.

As a single mom with primary custody of her and her ex-husband’s two children, it’s understandable why Kelly Clarkson wouldn’t be able to pull off a bicoastal work schedule. Even as she said she misses her Voice family, she previously expressed how much she was struggling on the show due to what was happening in her personal life, and it sounds like stepping away was the best move for her.

So it looks like we can scratch Kelly Clarkson’s name off the list, as well as Lionel Richie’s other pick — Taylor Swift, who continues to travel the world on her Eras Tour and is always keeping Swifties excited with new music and upcoming projects. But there are still plenty of other great options to join Richie and Luke Bryan on the American Idol Season 23 panel.

Along with the aforementioned Jordin Sparks, Meghan Trainor is reportedly interested in the gig, as she served as a guest judge this season (and, incidentally, a guest mentor on The Voice in one of many deja vu moments for the two singing competitions). Miley Cyrus’ name is also out there, as well as Pink, though the “Raise Your Glass” singer has said she doesn’t want the gig.

As fans continue to wait for an official announcement from American Idol, host Ryan Seacrest indicated that he might already know who Katy Perry’s replacement will be, shrugging off an interviewer’s question with a coy, “Maybe, maybe not.” Oh Ryan. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long, because it’s bad enough that Season 23 won’t premiere until 2025. Katy Perry has officially left the building. With the crowning of Abi Carter as American Idol’s Season 22 champion, the “Roar” singer’s time on the ABC singing competition is over. No replacement has been named to presumably join Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan for Season 23, though Perry has shared who she’d pick, and some celebs have thrown their hats in the ring. In the meantime, it seems Richie is feeling a bit nostalgic for the trio that worked together for seven years, as he talked about missing Perry already and an important quality the new judge needs to have.

There’s no arguing how different Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie are from each other. They come from different eras and different genres of music, having taken different journeys to eventually come together on American Idol in Season 16. So it’s not hard to believe Richie when he recalls the judges being something of a hot mess in their early years together. He told USA TODAY:

She was the opposite of embarrassed as she tried to show off the damage after one 2018 incident, and then she and Luke Bryan had a fun exchange after another malfunction in 2022. Bryan apparently has problems of his own, according to Lionel Richie, but it sounds like these three have made plenty of fond memories together. 

What Katy Perry’s American Idol Replacement Needs To Have 

That said, the “Endless Love” crooner has some pretty strong opinions about specific qualities the new American Idol judge will need to embody. For one thing, Lionel Richie said, they’ll have to be able to “tolerate two crazy brothers like me and Luke.” Katy Perry’s replacement will also need to have their own “personality,” or “quirk,” but the judge cautions anyone against trying to recreate Perry’s persona. Richie said: 

Katy Perry herself weighed in on what she’s hoping to see from the new judge, saying she wants someone who will give honest feedback and won’t mince their words. The singer has said she’d love to see Jelly Roll get the gig, while Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks has said she’d be interested in returning to American Idol in a judging capacity. One singer who’s decidedly not gunning for the role is Pink, who said she wouldn’t want to have to hurt people’s feelings.

Perry herself has been discussing potential replacements as of late and, while sharing her latest thoughts on her ideal successor, she recalled past fan backlash she’s faced.

What Did Katy Perry Say About Her Replacement On Idol?

Katy Perry shared an idea for the next judge during an interview conducted back in April. At the time, she stated that singer-songwriter Jelly Roll would make for a great successor (which is an opinion that might’ve generated mixed feelings amongst fans). The “Smile” performer, who was going to "celebrate" with her pals after the show, weighed in on the topic again while speaking with ET after her final episode as an Idol judge. Based on the sentiments she shared, she wants the person to have some of the qualities she personally possesses. And that includes a willingness to be “polarizing” at times: 

The Grammy nominee’s mention of the comments said by people seem to refer to the controversies she was involved in during her tenure on American Idol. In March 2023, a contestant named Sara Beth Liebe shared a TikTok video, in which she claimed that Katy Perry “shamed” her during her audition. More specifically, Liebe asserted that Perry made a “joke” at her expense after she revealed to the panel, who’d commented on how young she looked, that she had three kids. Not too long after that, Perry caught flak again for criticizing an outfit contestant Nutsa Buzaladze wore while performing on the show. In both instances, fans chastised the “Hot n Cold” singer. 

Despite that, it would still seem that she’s choosing to own her persona and accepting the blowback as well. It is true that the 39-year-old mother of one has never hesitated to share her opinions – for better and for worse. I’m not sure if the show’s producers will seek out someone quite as opinionated as she is, but it’s hard to deny the notion that such a person would add an interesting layer to the show.

What Happened On Katy Perry’s Final Episode, And Where Do Things Stand With Her Successor?

Katy Perry’s Idol send-off made for a truly memorable season finale, with several contestants performing some of her hit songs. Abi Carter (who was eventually crowned Season 22’s winner), Kaibrienne Richins and Emmy Russell sang a rendition of “Teenage Dream.” That was followed by a performance of “Dark Horse” by Jayna Elise and McKenna Breinholt. Adding to the sweet moment were Mia Matthews and Julia Gagnon, who joined the rest of the contenders in singing “California Gurls.”

And, later in the night, honoree herself paid tribute to the various talents that the show has welcomed by sporting a giant dress laden with former contestants’ faces while singing "What Makes A Woman" with eventual runner-up Jack Blocker. On top of that, Idol alum Fantasia Barrino, Jon Bon Jovi and Seal were among the stars to appear throughout the night. Talk about going out with a bang. At present, speculation continues to fly in regard to who might become the next judge. Series host Ryan Seacrest weighed in on Jelly Roll possibly taking the spot, calling him “charming” and “a force in music.” Nevertheless, Seacrest declined to say whether a definitive decision had been made on a new addition. I’m certainly curious to see who ends up landing the gig – and whether they’re as “polarizing” as Katy Perry hopes they’ll be.

49-year-old Ryan Seacrest may be one of the busiest people in show business, but it sounds like he’s more than keen on slowing down for a moment and celebrating his co-star. The Idol host recently caught up with ET, during which he discussed the “Firework” singer’s imminent exit from the show. When asked how he – and likely fellow judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and more – will mark Katy Perry’s last night as a regular judge, Seacrest teased the broadcast and what the crew will do once it’s done: 

So it sounds like viewers can expect the finale to – at least, partially – serve as a tribute to the singer, who joined ABC’s American Idol revival upon its debut in 2018. I’d say that an A+ performance and a dinner involving a grade A piece of beef should make for a great night. Ryan Seacrest, who’s currently preparing to take over as host on Wheel of Fortune, shared some more sentiments on the pop princess and got somewhat sentimental in the process:

Katy Perry formally revealed her decision to step away from Idol after serving behind the judges’ table for seven seasons. She attributed the decision to her desire to branch out and try other creative endeavors. While one can certainly understand her choice, it does leave the producers in a position in which they must find a successor for her. Interestingly, Perry’s idea is to have noted singer and songwriter Jelly Roll take her place. Lionel Richie also pitched a couple of names, suggesting that Kelly Clarkson and even Taylor Swift would be wonderful additions to the show. One pop star who won’t replace Perry, however, is Pink, who believes she’s not built for the job of critiquing performers. 

Having heard all of the chatter, Ryan Seacrest commented on Jelly Roll being a possible replacement and called the Tennessee native “a force in music.” At the same time, Seacrest remained coy on whether he knows if someone has been hired. He may be keeping that information close to the vest, but what he’s not holding back is his affection for the show’s soon-to-be-leaving judge. Here’s hoping that she enjoys her last episode and has a sweet night with her co-stars.

As American Idol gets closer to crowning its next winner, the show is also in the process of picking a new judge. After Katy Perry announced she'd be leaving following this current season, many people have been putting their two cents in as to who could possibly replace her. Former famous Idol contestants have expressed a desire to be a judge, while Perry suggested Jelly Roll. And fellow judge Lionel Richie pitched some big names as well. Now, one pop star has confirmed they have no interest in being on the show, and I really want them to reconsider.

This will mark the first time since American Idol’s revival debuted in 2018 that a judge will be leaving the panel, as Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan have been in the seats since then. Of course, the show had a rotating judges' panel in its original incarnation, so this is really nothing new. Still, with Perry departing, you can’t help but wonder who will be taking over. ABC has yet to announce her replacement, so until then, the speculation is continuing. One singer who does not want to be in consideration is Pink, who tells ET that she's "not set up" for the position for one key reason:

It makes sense why Pink doesn’t want to do the show. I mean, having to tell people “No” at their auditions and giving very constructive feedback can definitely be challenging. But this does make me sad, because she would definitely be a perfect addition. She’s been in the music industry for a while and could certainly impart some keen wisdom. And it would be fun to see how her pop-punk-rock style influences the contestants. While she may be afraid of hurting people’s feelings, she certainly is not afraid to go above and beyond when it comes to her music and her choreography, and it’s a shame she doesn't want to bring her signature style to Idol.

Even though she doesn’t have interest in being a regular judge on American Idol, that doesn’t necessarily mean she won’t ever do it. Perhaps she could just be a guest judge or fill in for someone for an episode or two later down the line. At the very least, she can always be a mentor to help out the aspiring singers rather than seriously critiquing them. She definitely has a lot to offer, and it'd simply be a joy to see her on American Idol in whatever capacity.

Meanwhile, there's currently no telling who could possibly take over for Katy Perry and who the network might be eyeing. Whether they’ll go with a former champion, someone that one of the judges have suggested, or perhaps someone completely different is hard to predict. It would be fun if a former judge were to come back, but it seems we will just have to wait a little longer to see who American Idol chooses. And here's hoping Pink possibly changes her mind at some point.

Ryan Seacrest Weighs In On Jelly Roll As Possible American Idol Judge 

Katy Perry sang Jelly Roll’s praises after his April appearance on the ABC singing competition, calling him “amazing” and saying she “was convinced at anything he said.” Ryan Seacrest seemed to agree that the “Son of a Sinner” singer has a hypnotic quality about him, as he told E! News: 

Those are all great qualities to have as the judge of a singing competition, so is it safe to say that Ryan Seacrest is also endorsing Jelly Roll? We may want to pump the brakes on that assumption, because the host may possess more information than he’s letting on. 

Does Ryan Seacrest Already Know Who’s Replacing Katy Perry? 

Ryan Seacrest has been the host of American Idol since the beginning — dating back to 2002, when the competition aired on Fox — so it would make sense if he’s aware of the conversations being had about which musical superstar to bring in as Katy Perry takes her leave. When asked directly if he had tea to spill regarding American Idol’s Season 23 judges, Seacrest played it coy with a shrug, saying:  

With the Season 22 finale airing on the 2024 TV schedule at 8 p.m. ET Sunday, May 19, it looks at this point like they might wait until Katy Perry has officially clocked out before addressing next season’s casting. However, Ryan Seacrest’s teasing response makes me think some moves have already been made.

We’ll have to wait to see if Jelly Roll gets the gig, but from the singer’s comments, it sounds like it’s a job he’d be willing to accept. He even joked that he’d already said yes, even though they hadn’t offered it to him.

The “Need a Favor” singer isn’t the only one interested, though. Former American Idol winner Jordin Sparks previously tweeted that she’d answer ABC’s phone call, and current judge Lionel Richie threw out a couple of big names he’d love to have sitting beside him.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to see what the judges’ table will look like moving forward, but until then we can just enjoy our final moments with Katy Perry.

American Idol is well on its way to crowning its Season 22 winner, at which time the singing competition will also bid farewell to judge Katy Perry. Since the “California Gurls” singer announced her impending exit in February, her replacement has been a big topic of conversation amongst Idol’s fans. Luke Bryan Addresses Alleged Feud With Fellow American Idol Judge Lionel Richie 

There’s been no official word from American Idol’s producers about what will happen to the judging panel for Season 23 and beyond. Who will replace Katy Perry? Will Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie return or will the show start fresh with three new faces? Those are big questions, and during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Bryan was asked if that uncertainty was causing tension between him and the “Hello” singer. The host called the Idol judges “the next Drake and Kendrick Lamar,” to which Bryan sarcastically replied: 

Luke Bryan referenced the documentary about the biggest names in music coming together in 1985 to sing “We Are the World” (available to stream with a Netflix subscription) to point out how ridiculous it would be to categorize his co-worker as an antagonistic person. When Jimmy Kimmel suggested that perhaps Bryan was the problem, not Lionel Richie, the “Country Girl” singer acknowledged the rumor, saying: 

Life&Style reported on May 2 that the set of American Idol had become “a real claw-fest,” with Luke Bryan allegedly getting annoyed that Lionel Richie has been “so pushy” about getting one of his friends on the show. Bryan reportedly thinks the decision should be left to the producers, but that hasn’t kept the judges — including Katy Perry — from pitching some big names. And that brings us to Jelly Roll. 

Did Jelly Roll Accept The American Idol Gig? 

Technically, yes, after Katy Perry made it known that Jelly Roll had completely won her over when he appeared on American Idol, the “Need a Favor” singer said he accepted the offer. Not so fast, though, because he quickly followed that up by clarifying that nobody has actually asked him to join the show. When asked if he’d consider the job, he told Audacy (via People): 

Jelly Roll seemed flattered that Katy Perry said such kind things about him — both publicly and privately — and it sounds like he’s more than open to continuing that conversation. However, it doesn’t seem likely that American Idol would move forward with an all-male judging panel, so if Jelly Roll was offered the job, there’s the question of if a woman might replace an existing judge (one former winner has thrown her hat in the ring) or Idol could always increase the number of judges to four.

A few former champions have thrown their hats in the ring, and Perry herself indicated that she’d love to see Jelly Roll get the gig. However, “Endless Love” crooner Richie threw out a couple of huge names that he’d like to see, and I would totally be on board with this.

Lionel Richie Pitches Kelly Clarkson Or Taylor Swift To Join American Idol 

The show has had to replace several judges who have left American Idol over the years, so there’s no question that producers are having these conversations behind the scenes even before Katy Perry signs off for good. If they need ideas, it sounds like Lionel Richie’s got a couple. He told ET that he recently ran into the OG American Idol, none other than Kelly Clarkson, and he made it no secret that he’d love to see her return to her roots. Richie said: 

I have to say, I love Lionel Richie shooting his shot like this, and this would undoubtedly be an excellent pick. I think Kelly Clarkson was one of the best all-time coaches of The Voice during her nine seasons on the NBC singing competition, so I'd love to see her return to the competition realm. (And that wouldn’t be the only overlap between American Idol and The Voice.) 

But why stop there? Lionel Richie also had another name in mind, and it’s one that’s honestly been on a lot of people’s minds lately with her new album, the Eras Tour and high-profile relationship with Travis Kelce — that’s right, Richie shouted out Taylor Swift as a possible replacement for Katy Perry, saying: 

As amazing as either Kelly Clarkson or Taylor Swift would be as an American Idol judge, I feel like both are a long shot. Idol, like The Voice, films primarily in Los Angeles, and one of the reasons Clarkson left The Voice was because she relocated to New York. As for Swift, well, we hear she’s got a lot going on at the moment. 

Who Else Has Been Mentioned As A Possible Replacement For Katy Perry? 

There’s been no official news on who might join the panel for American Idol Season 23, which is no surprise since Katy Perry is still doing her thing on the current cycle. However, in addition to Perry’s comments about Jelly Roll, Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks voiced interest in returning to the show as a judge.

Another former winner, Season 2’s Ruben Studdard, as well as the runner-up that season, Clay Aiken, also indicated to E! News that they would answer ABC’s call. Whoever American Idol ultimately chooses, there’s one important factor in naming Katy Perry’s replacement, according to Lionel Richie, who said:

Since its premiere on ABC, American Idol has maintained the same judges have, but that's about to change. Prior to the start of Season 22, Katy Perry announced she'd leave her post at the historic judges’ table after this season. Her time on the show has been marked with heartfelt feedback for contestants and occasionally problematic moments, like when one former contestant claimed she felt “shamed” by the singer. Despite it all, she’s managed to keep the judge’s panel balanced, occupying space between Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Now, she's provided an idea for her replacement, and I disagree with it.

While Katy Perry’s departure is bittersweet, she has a good reason for leaving American Idol's judges table. She plans to enter a new phase in her career when filming wraps, and it seems like she wants to leave future Idol contestants in good hands. Though it’s unlikely she has any say, that hasn’t stopped her from voicing her opinions on who should replace her. In an interview with E! News on April 15th after the live show aired, Perry threw a certain country singer into the mix:

The fan-favorite performer recently appeared on the coveted "Aulani Round" of the Season 22 competition, serving as one of the mentors to the contestants. Not only did Jelly Roll make a great impression on the singer’s competition for the American Idol title, but he also seemed to win over the heart of the "E.T." singer. So much so that she wants him to replace her alongside Richie and Bryan in future seasons. She also said:

There’s no denying that Jelly Roll is talented and a phenomenal mentor, yet I’m not so sure he’s the right person to replace Katy Perry. For one, if he is chosen, the judges would be made up entirely of men. Not even the original Idol that premiered on Fox back in 2002 was unwise enough to create an all-male panel.

In addition to having three men judging the contestants, there would also be a lack of diversity among music genres. Right now, Lionel Richie represents R&B/Soul, Katy Perry reps Pop and Luke Bryan signifies Country. If the Grammy nominee were to be hired, that would mean half of the judge’s panel are country singers, potentially making it harder for artists of other genres to get balanced feedback.  

To me, the "Daisies" singer might not be right in suggesting Jelly Roll as her replacement, but she does have the right idea when it comes to what traits she wants the new judge to have:

In my opinion, this truth teller should be a woman and perhaps even a former American Idol contestant. It’s no secret that Season 6 champion Jordin Sparks has been vocal about filling Katy Perry’s shoes. It would be nice to have someone sitting at the judges’ table who knows exactly what it’s like to be on the opposite side of the situation. Also, like Jelly Roll, she’d make a great mentor. 

There's currently no official word on who is being seriously considered for Katy Perry’s seat, but it’s only a matter of time before the news will be revealed. For now, American Idol fans can watch the “California Gurls” judge one last set of contestants by tuning into ABC on Sunday nights at 8 p.m. ET as part of the 2024 TV schedule. Last year was the year of the black bikini with celebrities like Halle Berry, Kim Kardashian, Irina Shayk, and more sporting the sexy swimwear. This year, Katy Perry proved that wearing a bikini doesn’t only belong in the pool or the ocean. During the iHeartRadio Music Awards at the Los Angeles Dolby Theatre, the “Teenage Dream” singer donned a black bikini and netted dress as her red carpet look, and she pulled it off spectacularly. Designed by the New York label Interior, Katy Perry’s red carpet look consisted of a netted sheer dress tied together with red bows. You’d think it would resemble a beach cover-up considering a stringy black bikini is seen underneath the dress. The “I Kissed a Girl” singer completed her red carpet attire with knee-high boots from Khaite and black shield sunglasses from Acne Studios. While I never expected a bikini to be red carpet material, leave it to the glam popstar to show us how it’s done.

This isn't the first time Katy Perry has wowed onlookers with her red-carpet looks. At the Billboard Women In Music event, the Juno Award winner brought back the whale tail trend with a red corset top and skirt set that was classy in the front. The back was a party we all weren’t ready for with an exposed thong. Overall, you've got to give the California native credit for giving us some edgy and glam styles on the red carpet.

These fashion moments also are getting me excited about the pop star's potential return to music. After Katy Perry revealed she’d be leaving American Idol five days before Season 22’s premiere, she teased the possibility of releasing new music. She shared this shocking news on Jimmy Kimmel Live! saying she’s ready to explore exciting opportunities like performing in Rock in Rio in September. Perry explained that like Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson left the show, she felt it may be time for her to follow suit after seven seasons. But she also told Kimmel that she would be open to coming back if asked.

Katy Perry showed off her daring fashion sense wearing a black bikini on the iHeartRadio Music Awards red carpet, and I love her all the more for it! I don’t know how she managed it, but it was cool for her to make a very unique appearance that way.

It’s hard to fathom, but this coming June will mark the 22nd anniversary of the debut of American Idol's first season. Tasked with finding the next greatest superstar in the country, the trio of judges and various viewers ended up crowning Kelly Clarkson as the winner. Most would probably agree that Clarkson has become a renowned entertainer since then, and she continues to amaze. If you need further evidence of that though, you should listen to her cover of Katy Perry's "Wide Awake," which even had Perry joking about retiring the song.

The track was covered during the “Kellyoke” segment of Kelly Clarkson's Daytime Emmy Award-winning talk show. Every episode opens with the host covering a song she’s a fan of, and she pretty much knocks it out of the park every time. Some of her performances get more attention than others, including her latest cover of “Wide Awake,” which has the tune's original singer in awe. Now, there have been some great Kellyoke covers on The Kelly Clarkson Show, but this one really takes the cake. Unlike any typical karaoke that has singers performing the song as it was written, the “Since U Been Gone” singer often changes the key of songs and even speeds them up or slows them down as she sees fit. That’s a testament to her incredible producing skills as well as her singing abilities. All in all, this is definitely a performance for the books and further solidifies why Clarkson is hands down the best American Idol in this fan's eyes.

This moment is only made better by the fact that Katy Perry herself, who's a currently an Idol judge, was so moved by her fellow songstress' rendition. With that, Perry left a hilarious comment under the video: 

The “Teenage Dream” singer is currently set to perform at Rock in Rio later this year and is gearing up for, what’s fan hope is, a return to touring after she announced her exit from American Idol. I say all of that to say that it's unlikely she’ll actually retire the song. However, it’s funny to hear her joke and share a sentiment that aligns with what many admirers of the "Breakaway" singer have been saying for some time: the talk show host sings covers better than the original artists. 

Maybe I’m the only one but, with Katy Perry set to return to the music industry and Kelly Clarkson’s Las Vegas Residency having come to a close, now might be the perfect time for these two to team up and remind the pop music world who the founders of the modern genre are. If anything, I’d love to see the “I Kissed A Girl” singer return the favor and cover one of Clarkson’s songs. Maybe that could even be Clarkson's Idol-winning song, “A Moment Like This.” 

The "Roar" performer wasn’t the only member of the Idol family to comment on Clarkson’s latest Kellyoke peformance, either. Season 8 runner-up and current lead vocalist for Queen, Adam Lambert also found himself jumping into the comments section of the Instagram video, writing: 

One can assume that Adam Lambert knows what Katy Perry is feeling since Kelly Clarkson also covered his original song, “Whataya Want From Me,” back in December 2020 and absolutely crushed it. In fact, the “Stronger” singer’s covers have been so well received, that she even released a six-song EP in 2022 that featured some of her most popular covers. Hopefully, another “Kellyoke” album is in the works and features the star's show-stopping take on "Wide Awake."

Congratulations to Cameron Diaz, Benji Madden, and the newest member of their little family! On Friday, the couple announced the birth of their second child via Instagram, and there’s no doubt that they’re probably feeling the love today. Less than 24 hours later, over 1,300 comments have poured in from fans and stars alike, congratulating the parents. And, all the support from some of the music industry’s biggest icons, including Katy Perry and Pete Wentz, is especially cute to see.

Both stars shared on Instagram a photo of what seems like doodles and a part of a portrait with the words, “A little bird whispered to me.” While it seems cryptic, it all makes sense once you read the caption, where they revealed that their son’s name is Cardinal. They also mentioned that they won’t be sharing pictures of their kids to protect their privacy. Here’s the full post:

One of the best parts about how the couple shared this news has been seeing how a number of their famous musical friends have reached out to share their excitement about the baby reveal. Lionel Richie and Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz are just two of the legends on the comments list that showed their love. And, one of the most noticeable commenters of course was from Madden’s twin brother and the other half of the pop rock band, Good Charlotte, Joel Madden. The comments included:

Cardinal is the couple’s second child together. In 2019, the Bad Teacher actress gave birth to their first daughter, Raddix. While they’ve worked to keep their daughter out of the spotlight (which will most likely happen with Cardinal too), Diaz has been vocal about how much she’s enjoying being a mother, and she has even divulged everyday life details, like Raddix’s interesting diet. She’s also mentioned how surprised she is with how fast kids grow and change, and that she’s relishing every moment – something most parents can likely relate to.

For the most part, Cameron Diaz hasn't been seen on-screen since having kids. In 2018, after some back-and-forth reports, she confessed that she retired from acting, which confirmed people’s suspicions after she hadn’t been seen on screen for quite a few years since appearing in The Other Woman and other movies. 

However, recently, while enjoying mom life, she’s made a few television appearances on The Drew Barrymore Show and RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars. She’ll also be starring in an upcoming Netflix project that’s part of the 2024 movie schedule called Back in Action, and she'll be in another film called Outcome, alongside Keanu Reeves, Jonah Hill, and Matt Bomer.

Even though Good Charlotte’s latest song was dropped in 2020 and their last album was released in 2018, Diaz’s husband, Benji, seems to also be ramping up his schedule while being on dad duty. There have been talks about an upcoming tour for the band, but nothing is confirmed yet. Most recently, they performed at the When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas, and even surprised the crowd by bringing out Lil Wayne. 

The couple seems to have some great stuff going on in the near future, and it’ll be exciting to see what is next in their journey. For now, they’ll probably just be laying low for a bit and enjoying time with their new baby, which we support 100%.

Fresh off the news that Katy Perry’s leaving American Idol, the longtime singer is drawing attention for a totally different reason: fashion. The “Firework” singer attended this year’s Billboard Women In Music event and rocked two early aughts trends at once:  The corset and the whale tail.  

I’m dating myself by saying this, but the whale tail was a thing that was briefly in when I was in high school, and honestly I was totally fine when (I thought) it went the way of the dinosaur. Still, only an apocalypse could keep trends from coming back, and like scrunchies and baggy pants, this is yet another look that’s making a comeback. The singer also took to Instagram to share the outfit, nodding even more at the early ‘00s with a lyric from Crazy Town’s ‘Butterly,’ thus completing the nostalgia. 

Fans were all over the look, most of them deciding it was fire or a great comeback for the singer. (Though one fan couldn't resist joking, "She's finally cracked.")

The star wore a red corset top with a red corset skirt that was delicately ruffled in the front and all party in the back. She paired the look with a classic pearl necklace and earrings, as well as red lipstick that totally matched. 

As for the whale tail, Ms. Perry did not originate the return of the exposed thong for the YouTube theater event in the LA area. In fact, this look might be having more staying power than it did the last time it became trendy. 

Last spring, Project Runway’s Heidi Klum brought the whale tail back in a gold dress. A few months later, Adam Levine’s wife Behati Prinsloo also wore an exposed thong, which he shared to his Instagram. Then, Florence Pugh also wore a gorgeous sparkly number a few months ago that showed off her thong, though that look did not go full whale tail and was instead a sheer take on the edgy fashion idea.  

So, I shouldn’t have been really surprised when the early aughts trend made its way onto this red carpet, or in this case, the blue carpet. The corset trend has also been everywhere in recent months, and really came to a head when Taylor Swift wore the style to the Grammys, so Ms. Perry really landed right in the lane of what is popular right now. Between this and her viral coronation moment, she's on a bit of a tear, and we’ll have to keep an eye on her looks as she wraps her American Idol run. 

The landscape of American Idol is going to look different following Season 22, as Katy Perry announced that she will exit the show after seven seasons as a judge. Fans certainly are already racking their brains for who would be best to join Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan behind the judges’ table to assist in shaping contestants into potential music superstars. It’s possible that some of the singing competition’s alumni will be amongst those being considered, and at least one former champion has made it known she’d like to throw her hat in the ring.

Jordin Sparks, who won Season 6 of American Idol, expressed interest in replacing Katy Perry following the current season, as she wrote on X (Twitter): 

The former contestant was just 17 years old when she won the show, and her career since solidifies her place as one of American Idol’s most famous contestants. She’s released four studio albums, been nominated for two Grammy Awards — in 2009 for her Pop Collaboration with Chris Brown on “No Air,” and in 2023 for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song with “Love Me Like I Am” — and taken her talents to the stage and screen, with multiple guest appearances on TV and appearing on Broadway in In the Heights and Waitress.

It definitely sounds like she’s got the resume to at least be considered for the gig, and several comments on Jordin Sparks’ social media post showed that she’s got support from her fans. People really liked the idea of seeing a former contestant join American Idol, writing:

One fan even invoked Jordin Sparks’ fellow American Idol alum Jennifer Hudson, posting: 

With Season 22 just getting underway, there’s been no official talk of what will happen in Season 23 and beyond, with Katy Perry just the latest judge to leave the show. The “California Gurls” singer told Jimmy Kimmel that after years of connecting to the heart of America, she needs to “feel that pulse to my own beat.” However, her announcement comes after a tough season where she was accused of “mom-shaming” a contestant, and insiders suggested she felt “thrown under the bus” by producers in their portrayal of her as the “nasty judge.” Whoopi Goldberg also made comments about the show as a whole, saying American Idol was responsible for the “downfall of American society.”

Time will tell if Jordin Sparks makes a return to the American Idol set on the other side of the table. That has all led to some unforgettable moments and occasional controversy, such as the time she "shamed" one contestant into a viral sensation. Now, it appears that Perry's tenure on the show is coming to an end. The "Teenage Dream" singer announced her departure in a unique way. She took to social media, dressed in an eye-catching outfit adorned with butterflies, and played a game of two truths and a lie to share the news that this season would be her last on the reality competition show.

In her Instagram post, the singer is seen in a stunning cutaway black gown embellished with butterflies, posing against a simple backdrop. In addition to dropping the images, she invited her followers to play along with her two truths and a lie: "1. I beat @usher at Monopoly Deal. 2. I’m headlining Rock in Rio this September. 3. This is my last season on @americanidol." This creative reveal, which you can see embedded below, has captured the attention of fans and viewers, and marks the end of an era for the show. The celebrated songstress proceeded to make a headline-worthy appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday evening, revealing that after a seven-year stint as a judge alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, this season would be her last. The conversation (which was shared on YouTube) began with Kimmel cutting straight to the chase, asking the pop star about her future on the show. Initially, she diverted by expressing her excitement about her upcoming performance at Brazil's famous Rock in Rio music festival. However, she soon shared the unexpected news as follows:

Katy Perry's announced departure from the show comes eight months after sources close to her revealed to The Daily Mail that she was unhappy with the intense backlash she faced throughout Season 21. According to reports and a source close to the singer, Perry had been planning to leave the show since last year after feeling unfairly portrayed by the producers' editing choices, casting her as the "tough judge." Like how it was revealed that Simon Cowell’s rudeness was faked for TV, Perry claims so were much of her interactions in last year's season. She allegedly felt "thrown under the bus" by the show's producers and had allegedly been considering stepping away ever since.

While her departure may be imminent, that stop the “California Gurls” singer shared her excitement about the upcoming season of Idol. She also explained why she believed this to be a natural stopping point for her:

There is currently no word on who may fill the judges chair following Katy Perry’s departure. Though you can bet that inquiring minds will be seeking out information on that front as time goes on. Also, I'd keep an eye out for Perry's social media account in case she drops more fresh fits and plays additional games with fans.

Season 22 of American Idol is just about to hit the 2024 TV schedule, as it premieres on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024. The show will now air at 8 p.m. ET and 5 p.m. PT on Sunday nights and will be available to stream for anyone with a Hulu subscription soon after. 

Every once in a while, the folks at Studio 8H book an SNL host who's note an actor and ends up nailing it and many of these examples include people who make music for a living. On other occasions, the artist serving as that night’s musical guest may make an appearance in a sketch or two to show the world that they can be funny, too. The following are some of our favorite examples of famous musicians we usually love to sing along to, but had as laughing along with them in a great SNL bit.

Single Ladies Video Shoot (Beyoncé)

In this fictionalized behind-the-scenes look at the legendary “Single Ladies” video, Beyoncé is shocked and annoyed by the director (host Paul Rudd) and his decision to make her back-up dancers three grown men who turn out to be his stepsons. This Season 34 favorite is actually a twofer that ended up happening because, as MTV News recalls, the former N*SYNCer convinced Queen B to participate in the sketch by showing up at her Studio 8H dressing room in the very leotard he wears alongside Andy Samberg and Bobby Moynihan.

SNL Digital Short: Jack Sparrow (Michael Bolton)

The music video for the fourth track off The Lonely Island’s sophomore album, Turtleneck & Chain, starts off as an unusually earnest effort for the trio. That is until their guest singer, Grammy-winner Michael Bolton, starts throwing in references to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and later, other cinematic favorites like Forrest Gump and Scarface. For its masterful handling of a truly random idea and irresistibly catchy hook, “Jack Sparrow” is easily one of The Lonely Island’s best music videos and perhaps, some of Bolton’s all-time best work.

Africa Tourism (Adele)

For reasons that are never quite clear — perhaps Kate McKinnon’s accent or the sensuous ways she says “tribesman” — host Adele could not stop laughing while performing in a fake ad for African tourism. Nonetheless, the Oscar-winning,  impeccable James Bond theme song (“Skyfall”) singer’s gigglish reaction — complete with a priceless cross-eyed gaze — is just what makes this Season 46 sketch so memorable.

The Old West (Elton John)

When Elton John hosted SNL during Season 36, he appeared as himself for most of the night, except for in one sketch that proved he can be as much a maestro with comedy as he can be with the keys. The Grammy-winner pokes fun at himself, too, by playing a flamboyantly dressed cowboy, who rides into a small western saloon on a unicorn.

Please Don't Destroy: Three Sad Virgins (Taylor Swift)

In one of Please Don’t Destroy’s most popular SNL bits, the guys are, at first, excited to collaborate with Pete Davidson until their music video becomes a roast at the trio’s expense. “Three Sad Virgins” only gets more “humiliating” when they reach the slowed-down bridge, courtesy of Taylor Swift, whom PDD never imagined would agree to star in the video in the first place.

Mick is Pointing, Pointing, Pointing at Himself (Mick Jagger)

In the early 2000s, when The Rolling Stones returned as musical guest, lead singer Mick Jagger starred in a sketch as himself opposite Jimmy Fallon as the artist’s reflection. The future Tonight Show host’s impersonation of the legendary rock star sitting across from him is so hilariously convincing that even Jagger can’t help but crack a smile.

Pippa Visits the Queen (Katy Perry)

It's surprising that Katy Perry hasn't hosted SNL more often — let alone acted in more things outside the Smurfs movies — given how well she demonstrated her comedic skills on the show in 2011. The grandest highlight is when she dons a Cockney accent to play Pippa Middleton in a sketch poking fun at the Royal Family.

Pandora Radio (Bruno Mars)

Admittedly, the concept of this sketch — in which a Pandora radio employee (played by host Bruno Mars) must sing like artists such as Justin Bieber and Michael Jackson when the website crashes — doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But who cares? Watching the Grammy-winning hitmaker kill it with his spot-on musical impersonations is stunning.

Hotel Ad (Billie Eilish)

Both Billie Eilish — someone we’d love to see return to SNL as both host and musical guest — and her brother and bandmate, Finneas, star in this funny fake ad for a hotel that is a little too open about the alarming activity that takes place there. The Grammy and Oscar winner is very funny in the sketch but cannot stifle her laughter, which is understandable when Kate McKinnon is your scene partner.

The Barry Gibb Talk Show (Justin Timberlake)

We could not have picked a sketch featuring pop sensation-turned-master thespian Justin Timberlake — already one of the all-time greatest SNL hosts — without making sure Jimmy Fallon was also involved with it. Thus, it was easy to pick “The Barry Gibb Talk Show,” in which Fallon, as The Bee Gees’ lead vocalist, hosts a political discussion program featuring his most silent brother, Robin (Timberlake). 

Stevie Wonder Impersonator (Stevie Wonder)

After demonstrating his own wonderful impersonation of Stevie Wonder, Eddie Murphy shared the stage with the musical genius himself in a classic sketch from 1983. The future Academy Award-nominated SNL star plays an expert in impersonations, who is asked to help improve the Stevie Wonder impression of a man played by Wonder himself.

Judge Barry (Chance The Rapper)

Having only appeared on SNL four times — twice as a host and twice as a musical guest, each for different episodes — Chance the Rapper has already proven himself to be worthy of the hosting hall of fame, especially with this courtroom sketch. Before Jason Momoa rips open his shirt and steals the show, the hip-hop artist is fantastic as a judge who bases his rulings only on first impressions.

Parole Board (Blake Shelton)

When appearing as host and musical guest during SNL’s 40th season, country music superstar Blake Shelton demonstrated surprisingly impressive acting chops. He was in a sketch that initially seems to recreate a classic scene from the great Stephen King movie The Shawshank Redemption. However, a parole board member played by the former Voice coach bluntly reveals that Kenan Thompson’s prisoner has committed an unforgivable offense that leaves him with very little chance of freedom.

Blizzard Man (Ludacris)

To give his new album an extra boost, Ludacris (as himself) brings in a fabled hip-hop artist known as the Blizzard Man (Andy Samberg), who, as it turns out, cannot rap and does not even bother to rhyme his aggressively lame lyrics. The veteran of the Fast and Furious movies later appears alongside T-Pain in another edition of this sketch that is only made funnier by the fact that Samberg is totally capable of dropping some sick rhymes.

Parents Call (Halsey)

In host and musical guest Halsey’s monologue for her Season 44 episode, she described herself as an SNL fanatic, and her performance throughout the show really proves it. The Sing 2 cast member’s admiration for the show is especially evident when she dons a comically exaggerated New Jersey accent as a woman having an awkward, revealing phone call with her son (played by Mikey Day) in this sketch.

SNL Digital Short: Shy Ronnie (Rihanna)

In SNL’s 35th season, musical guest Rihanna teamed up with The Lonely Island for the first time on a Digital Short starring Andy Samberg as the title character. The comic plays a man who is too nervous to rap… as long as the “Umbrella” singer is in the room. It garnered a sequel called, “Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie & Clyde,” featuring Rihanna and Samberg dressed as Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway’s titular roles from 1967’s Bonne and Clyde.

Bond Casino Showdown (Tim McGraw)

We knew Tim McGraw could act from his roles in movies like The Blind Side and Country Strong, but never realized just how funny he could be when he hosted in Season 34. The hilarious peak of the 1883 cast member’s episode is a James Bond movies parody in which a vacationing redneck (McGraw) participates in a poker tournament with 007 (Bill Hader) and Le Chiffre (Fred Armisen).

SNL Digital Short: I'm On A Boat (T-Pain)

When Andy Samberg finds a winning ticket a boat ride for three in his cereal box, he invites fellow Lonely Islander Akiva Shaffer but skips over Jorma Taccone to select T-Pain. The rapper, famous for his use of auto-tune, is key to making the other ridiculous “I’m on a Boat” video a celebrated anthem for taking it easy while cruising through water.

The Train Poet (Johnny Cash)

One of the first musical artists to try their hand at acting as an SNL host was Johnny Cash, who actually only starred in three sketches from his Season 7 episode (two of which he never speaks in). Yet when the legendary “Man in Black” stars as a train passenger expressing his fond memories of his commute in a rhyming monologue, he really gives it all.

Rap Roundtable (Questlove) 

In one of Questlove’s most notable cameos, The Roots drummer participates in a panel of hip-hop artists also including Queen Latifah (Pinkie Johnson) and two up-and-comers (Pete Davidson and Timothée Chalamet), who clearly don’t know anything about the genre. What really helps ease this almost terrible SNL sketch to something amazing is when the Academy Award-winning director of Summer of Soul puts an end to the young “rapper’s” mindless ramblings by striking them with his hair pick.

Wayne's World: Aerosmith (Aerosmith)

Many would agree that Wayne Campbell from “Wayne’s World” — which inspired one of the funniest SNL movies — is still one of Mike Myers’ best characters. But deciding on the recurring sketch’s peak moment is a bit trickier. Ultimately, we have to go with the time Aerosmith — with help from their roadie and Garth’s (Dana Carvey) cousin, Barry (one of Tom Hanks’ best SNL characters) — appeared on the no-budget cable access program and performed their own rendition of the theme song.

Punk Band Reunion At The Wedding (Dave Grohl)

Dave Grohl appears in a sketch or two nearly every time he and the Foo Fighters perform, but, arguably, his best SNL bit comes from when he played with Them Crooked Vultures — a supergroup he formed with Josh Homme and John Paul Jones. The former Nirvana drummer became a part of another band that night consisting of Fred Armisen, Bill Hader and host Ashton Kutcher in a sketch that sees aging punk rockers bring the house down at a wedding reception.

Spider-Man Kiss (Chris Martin) 

In one of the most popular sketches on SNL’s YouTube Channel, a dramatized inside-look at the making of 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 reveals that then-real-life-couple Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone (both playing themselves) had some trouble shooting their climactic kissing scene. The solution: bringing in Chris Martin — frontman of the night’s musical guest, Coldplay — to don a blonde wig and take Stone’s place.

Hamm & Bublé (Michael Bublé)

This SNL sketch prominently featuring the A-list host, Jon Hamm, is framed as an ad for a new eatery co-owned by the Mad Men cast member and musical guest, Michael Bublé, called Hamm and Bublé (pronounced “bubbly” by Hamm). However, as the Canadian crooner reveals in song, he thinks the restaurant’s concept — serving ham with champagne — is ridiculous and is being forced into the business against his will.

SNL Digital Short: Boombox (Julian Casablancas)

One of The Lonely Island’s most unique collaborations saw Julian Casablancas — lead singer of Manhattan-based rock band The Strokes — provide vocals for the hip-hop trio’s 2010 song, “Boombox.” The video, which premiered on SNL in Season 35, sees Andy Samberg and Casablancas attempting to rescue strangers from mundane scenarios with the power of music, only for us to discover by the ending that is was a “cautionary tale” all along.

Spelling Bee (Tenacious D)

In a sketch that was partially mprovised and conceived by SNL star Will Forte, a young spelling bee contestant’s attempt to spell the word “business” results in an astonishing failure — consisting of an innumerable amount of random letters spouted for more than a minute. Suddenly, host Jack Black appears with his Tenacious D bandmate, Kyle Gass, to perform a song revealing that the bit was inspired by an embarrassing moment from the School of Rock star’s childhood (which is not true, by the way).

Little Drummer Boy (Whitney Houston)

In one of Molly Shannon’s most iconic appearances as Mary Katherine Gallagher, the overly ambitious Catholic school student struggles to out-sing her rival choir member, who happens to be played by the night’s uber-talented musical guest, Whitney Houston. Shannon recalled to Howard Stern (via YouTube) how she was actually able to convince the initially reluctant Houston to appear in the bit by telling her she just had to act “snotty.”

Garth Brooks Backstage With Tracy (Garth Brooks)

The second time Garth Brooks hosted SNL, the musical guest was his own rock star alter ego, Chris Gaines — a bizarre concept that earned mixed reactions in the late ‘90s. The country singer showed he had sense of humor about it all by participating in a sketch taking place backstage with Tracy Morgan, who criticizes Gaines in front of Brooks, unaware that they are the same person.

Waking Up With Kimye: Apple Genius (Lady Gaga)

When Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were still married, SNL had a recurring sketch that starred Jay Pharaoh and Nasim Pedrad as the celebrity couple hosting their own morning talk show. One edition featured host Lady Gaga as an Apple Store employee who makes a cleverly self-effacing comment about the true intentions of people who “try too hard with their outfits.”

Wayne's World (Madonna)

In one of many of Wayne Campbell’s (Mike Myers) iconic interactions with famous musicians, the cable access program host recalls the time he shared a romantic encounter with none other than Madonna. Garth (Dana Carvey) gets to experience the memory first-hand in the pre-taped bit, which also features a random cameo by the late Prince.

Orchestra (Lizzo)

Lizzo is famous for three unique talents: playing the flute, twerking, and performing both acts at the same time. That simultaneous mastery is demonstrated beautifully in a sketch from her Season 47 episode in which she plays an orchestra hopeful who is unable to play the flout without twerking.

Gangnam Style (Psy)

In SNL’s Season 38 premiere, host Seth MacFarlane starred in a sketch as a Lids clerk who tries to cheer up his co-worker (played by Kenan Thompson) by summoning Psy to perform “Gangnam Style” at the push of a button. Bobby Moynihan plays the viral K-pop sensation for most of the segment until the man himself appears in a surprise cameo at the very end.

A great way for musicians to show that their talents stray behind song and dance is by acting on SNL, as seen in these sketches.

It wouldn’t be a day on The View if its panel of co-hosts weren’t offending one group or another with their opinions. Whoopi Goldberg, specifically, is often the recipient of blowback after offering her blunt takes on a number of "Hot Topics." She recently had a lot to say about how judgmental society has become, and the Sister Act star apparently blames that phenomenon on reality TV, specifically American Idol, calling its 2002 premiere the “downfall of society.” Those sentiments are allegedly not sitting well with the singing competition’s current panel of judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, sources report.

Whoopi Goldberg made her bold claim about the fellow ABC show during an episode of The View in May, during a conversation about the Netflix documentary Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me. The co-hosts spoke about how Smith was covered in the media, and Goldberg’s comments came as part of a larger observation about people being “judgy.” American Idol, the longtime moderator said, gave the home audience the ability to judge other people by voting on the singers — a power that has since grown out of control, she said. The current judges apparently didn’t take too kindly to Goldberg’s sentiments, with an insider telling RadarOnline: 

The source is alleging that Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie were so put off by Whoopi Goldberg’s comments that they will skip The View when it comes time to make the rounds for Season 22.

Their reported boycott comes despite Whoopi Goldberg’s clarification — at the prompting of a producer — that she was talking more about American Idol’s days on Fox, before it moved to ABC in 2018. The EGOT winner acknowledged that the show has changed since switching networks, saying her comments were not aimed at the current judges. 

Specifically the co-hosts mentioned the “Simon Cowell Era,” when the British record executive was known to give some pretty harsh feedback to the contestants. It’s since been revealed that much of that rudeness was faked for TV, and that’s pretty easy to believe if you watch him on America’s Got Talent these days, where his persona is unrecognizable from the man who appeared on the early days of American Idol.

Whoopi Goldberg’s comments come just two months after American Idol’s current trio of judges appeared on The View to promote Season 21, which wrapped in May. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the coming months, and if they will, in fact, take a pass on the ABC daytime talk show during their next round of promotion.

The coronation of King Charles turned out to be as big an event as expected, it would seem. Weeks ago, there was plenty of buzz regarding a number of elements, ranging from the intricacies of British protocol and the quick departure of Prince Harry. Katy Perry was also one of the noted stars who performed at the royal celebration, yet it wasn’t her concert that made her go viral. The songstress got embroiled in some hat-blocking shade that greatly amused social media users. Photos also seemed to indicate that she couldn’t find her seat during the ceremony. Perry has now confirmed that was the case and, between those two situations, it’s evident that she just enjoys being a meme-able mess.

Plenty of stars have served as meme fodder at one point or another, but it’s rare that one has two instances in such close proximity to each other. The footage of Katy Perry apparently trying to find her seat took the Internet by storm, to say the least. While a number of people enjoyed the unaltered footage, a few got creative by putting their own spins on the awkward moment. You can see what one cheeky Twitter user shared down below:

Though a sizable number of people seemed to take pleasure in this situation, many also seemed to be genuinely curious about whether the singer really didn’t know where to sit. After all, some footage can be taken out of context in certain situations. However, it was during an interview with ET that the Billboard Music Award winner confirmed that she was indeed unsure of where she was supposed to be and directly addressed fans when discussing the matter: 

It’s a good thing that she eventually found her seat, yet that may not have been as beneficial for anyone who ended up sitting behind her. A few users expressed sympathy for those who ended up having to look at the back of her massive hat amid the festivities. The “Roar” singer herself was unsurprisingly more than aware of the playful shade being thrown at her and her headwear. She even shared one playful video to her Instagram: 

During her recent interview with ET, she went on to address the various memes that have resulted from her appearance at the coronation. And the self-deprecating entertainer’s sentiments suggest that she can totally roll with the punches as they come:

It’s like they say, if you can’t laugh at yourself, then who can you laugh at? I personally appreciate stars who can poke fun at themselves, and Katy Perry has definitely proven to be one of them. For instance, she previously joked about her ugly-crying face, which served as a bit of a bonding element between her and Kim Kardashian. (Also, this Perry situation is a lot more positive than the one that saw her go viral for allegedly shaming an American Idol contestant.) 

The coronation probably won’t mark the last time Katy Perry ends up making waves online in such a way, and it seems like she’s prepared if (or when) that happens. Speaking for myself, I’m more than ready for the funny and messy memes that may pour in after the fact.

With May 6 boasting both King Charles III’s coronation and the Kentucky Derby, it was a big day for hats! While much of the conversation surrounding the United Kingdom’s once-in-a-generation event centered around Prince Harry’s absence on the balcony and quick departure following the ceremony, there was apparently quite a stir caused by some of the headpieces worn by attendees of the coronation. Princess Anne slayed in full uniform for her brother’s big day, but the reactions to her feathered cap were pure comedy gold, and Katy Perry elicited hilarious reactions from underneath her giant disc of a hat when she couldn’t find her seat.

King Charles III’s sister Anne is often called the hardest-working member of the Royal Family, and it’s no surprise that she played an important role in her brother’s crowning. Princess Anne served as Gold Stick-In-Waiting, dressed in the Uniform of the Blues and Royals as she acted as Charles’ personal protection officer. However, many thought she served an additional role — one more comical and the result of allegations Prince Harry made about his family in his memoir Spare — as she was seated directly in front of her nephew: 

In that side view, Prince Harry can be seen in the third row, as his brother Prince William participates in the ceremony on stage. However, from the front, the viewing audience at home got quite a different view of the Duke of Sussex, and several Twitter users, including this one, were highly amused at what seemed like an intentional slight against Charles’ younger son: 

The British are known for their biting humor, so if that was the Royal Family’s retribution following months of “never complain, never explain,” I’ve got to say, well played. It’s kind of hard to believe so-called Feathergate was an accident, especially coming less than a year after Candlegate, in which Meghan Markle’s face was obscured by a giant candle at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral:

But Princess Anne’s feather wasn’t the only headpiece making headlines at the coronation. Katy Perry arrived in London to perform at the Coronation Concert on May 7, and she attended the Saturday event wearing a lavender dress with matching short-sleeved jacket, opera gloves and a large round hat.

It certainly didn’t get by viewers when the American Idol judge was shown having trouble finding her seat, as she tried to peer underneath the brim of her large hat. One hilarious TikTok video went viral of Katy Perry’s struggle: 

Several viewers hit up Twitter, as well, with salty comments about her hat being too large for the event. The expressed rage for those seated behind the singer, saying:

Katy Perry assured fans via Twitter that she did find her seat, and now I’m curious to know if Prince Harry will have a public reaction to his aunt’s feather taking center stage at the coronation. North West may be just 9 years old, but the oldest daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West truly got to live the “Teenage Dream” this weekend, when she and some friends attended a Katy Perry concert in Las Vegas. The American Idol judge, who has a popular residency in Sin City, spotted North in the crowd and went full fangirl over being in the presence of the young TikToker. The “Roar” singer invited the youngsters up on stage, and Kardashian — always with her phone at the ready — captured several videos from her daughter’s big moment. 

Katy Perry seemed truly surprised to see North West in the audience at her April 15 show at Resorts World. The 9-year-old and her buddies — including cousin Penelope Disick — screamed after being recognized by the singer, and one of Kim Kardashian’s Instagram Stories showed Perry absolutely gushing over Kimye’s eldest, saying: 

I think she was into the idea, too, because you can see North West’s reaction in the image below, as Katy Perry’s question was met with more shrieks from the pre-teens. Talk about a “Roar!” 

Katy Perry — who previously bonded with Kim Kardashian over their “ugly cry faces” — welcomed North West on stage, also allowing her friends to join her, and asked her to introduce herself to the crowd. Perry asked what she wanted to be when she grew up and was floored by North’s response of: “Everything.”  

Yep, that’s definitely the daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. The group proceeded to jump around the colorful stage with Katy Perry, dancing and doing cartwheels.

It was surely a memorable night for the girls, as Kim Kardashian’s Stories showed that they traveled to Las Vegas on her private plane and were treated to Katy Perry-themed mocktails. And after seeing these, I definitely want to zhuzh up my sodas with a fluff of cotton candy: 

North West’s mother shared plenty of videos from the concert, both of Katy Perry and of herself singing along to the artist’s biggest hits. She even dueted with her niece, Penelope, as Kourtney Kardashian’s daughter returned to the city of her mom’s first wedding to Travis Barker: 

As big of a night as it was for Kim Kardashian and North West, it seems like Katy Perry was equally flabbergasted to find out they were such fans of hers. More photos and videos were taken backstage after the show, where Perry became part of the family, calling herself “Katy Kardashian”: 

I mean, she’s got the “K” name, so why not? We’ll be able to see more of Kim Kardashian — and hopefully North West as well, with her hilarious pranks — when The Kardashians Season 3 hits the 2023 TV schedule on Thursday, May 25. Katy Perry has been entertaining crowds for a long time, breaking out as a pop star 15 years ago, and now as a judge on American Idol, she definitely brings that performative energy to the small screen. She’s had emotional freakouts over certain contestants and even dramatically acted like she was fainting during one Season 21 audition (after which her comments drew “mom-shaming” accusations). If there’s anybody who relates to such over-the-top reactions, it’s Kim Kardashian, and after Perry shared a self-deprecating photo of her ugly-cry face, the reality star had an A+ response.

Katy Perry wasn’t the only one letting the tears flow freely during the April 3 broadcast of American Idol. Ahead of the emotional episode, Perry gave her Instagram followers a peek at what they were in for, while poking fun at herself for having an “ugly-cry face”: 

Kim Kardashian’s “ugly-cry” radar must have gone off with Katy Perry’s post, and The Kardashians star hit up the singer in the comments to let her know she wasn’t alone. She told Perry: 

Kim Kardashian’s cry face is certainly iconic and likely the subject of even more memes than Ben Affleck’s unhappy face. Fans were introduced to her ugly crying way back in Season 1 of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, when she had an over-the-top reaction to her mom Kris Jenner saying there was a spider on her: 

It appears Kim Kardashian’s grandmother MJ and sister Kourtney were as entertained by her meltdown as the rest of us, judging from that photo. While the SKIMS founder’s ugly-cry face was featured several times on the E! reality show over its 20-season run, there’s likely no scene more infamous than when she lost her diamond earring in the ocean: 

That Season 6 scene prompted Kourtney Kardashian’s famous, “Kim, there’s people that are dying,” line. Kim Kardashian's cry face hasn’t gone anywhere over the years, and North West certainly seems to be aware of her mother’s influence on the meme culture, as she used the audio from another classic KUWTK crying scene in one of her TikTok videos trolling Kim Kardashian.  

We’ve even glimpsed the ugly cry on Hulu’s The Kardashians, when the SKIMS founder called Kanye West about a supposed sex tape ad that popped up on son Saint’s video game: 

So Katy Perry appears to be in good company when it comes to ugly-cry faces. This wasn’t the first time the pop star became emotional during the current season of American Idol. Perry became enraged at the state of our country, after singer Trey Louis spoke about losing eight friends and two teachers in a 2018 school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas. Sometimes extreme emotion is fully warranted, and Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian both tend to wear that on their sleeves.
