Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell have been in and around Hollywood for decades, and if there's one thing they've learned, it's to be careful about searching yourself on the internet. While they've managed to find separate career paths after becoming a comedy duo in their younger years, they still have similar viewpoints about advising against looking too deeply into others' opinions.

In addition to Thompson's return to Saturday Night Live later in the 2026 TV schedule, both men spoke to People about their upcoming video game, Orange Pop. It's there that the conversation about "Googling" oneself came up, and while Kenan admitted he's prone to do it "very randomly," Mitchell explained why he stopped doing it:

I get it, especially given the amount of intrigue as to why Kenan and Kel only work together on an occasional basis after seemingly being inseparable in their early careers. Rumors stirred there was a feud tied to SNL, though Thompson said it was more them naturally growing apart, thanks in part to life and wanting to be seen as individuals.

Thompson chimed in and agreed, even though he confessed that he still would look himself up. He added there's one component to looking yourself up as a celebrity, and how it could ultimately impact your career:

While I'm upset this means the two actors never read CinemaBlend's piece on rewatching Kenan & Kel as an adult, I can respect both wanting to avoid looking up what others say and feeling compelled to react to them. An actor responding to a critique can sometimes cause controversy, even if they're within their rights to feel upset about the criticism.

Kenan & Kel are teaming up again in the near future, with an upcoming movie in which their beloved television characters meet a legendary horror icon. Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein is set to go into production in the summer, as the 2026 movie schedule rolls on. I'm excited to see how that movie turns out, especially after being a little let down by Good Burger 2. Fun cameos aside, it'll be nice to see them in a new plotline that isn't beholden to any previous works.

Before that, they're promoting Orange Pop!, which is a mobile puzzle game that serves as a tribute to Kel's famous orange soda obsession. Anyone who is a fan of mobile games and loves seeing the duo reunited will get a kick out of the voice lines and callbacks to their on-screen friendship.

Before Kenan Thompson became the longest-tenured Saturday Night Live cast member, he was getting his start on Nickelodeon by way of All That and Kenan & Kel, which also happens to be how his longtime friendship with Kel Mitchell began. The two went on to co-star in Good Burger, based on the All That sketch of the same name, and for a long time seemed inseparable. But after trying to pitch a Kenan & Kel spinoff, and with only one of their SNL auditions being successful, they just... stopped working together.

Kenan & Kel ran for four seasons, from 1996 to 2001, but the duo wanted to take it farther. While appearing on Deon Cole’s Funny Knowing You podcast, the SNL star looked back at his career, including his experience on Kenan & Kel and what came after. He revealed that there was a time that he and Mitchell were going around and pitching a spinoff of the beloved sitcom:

It would have been fun to get a college-set spinoff of the beloved Nickelodeon classic following Kenan and Kel in the later years, and seeing what kind of hijinks they’d get into. But it makes sense why it didn’t get picked up, as Thompson and Mitchell were getting older and trying to make a Nickelodeon show into, probably, an adult comedy would have been hard. What’s even harder is the fact that they basically came as a packaged duo, and once the spinoff didn’t move forward, they just wanted to go off and do their own things:

Thompson and Mitchell worked together for over half a decade, and they were pretty synonymous with each other. So it only made sense they’d want to go off and do their own things once the spinoff wasn’t picked up, even if it did take some time. When asked if they had purposely avoided each other, Thompson revealed that was not the case. They just drifted apart and were both busy, personally and professionally:

Luckily, in recent years, things had changed. They started hanging out more and doing projects together, such as the All That revival, Good Burger 2, and Mitchell even made a surprise cameo on SNL in 2022 when Keke Palmer was hosting during a sketch in which Palmer and Thompson make a reboot of Kenan & Kel titled Kenan & Kelly.

I can imagine how hard it was for Thomson and Mitchell to branch off and do their own things, but it definitely was needed. Mitchell was able to focus on his family and other work, while Thompson was able to focus on the next step in his career, Saturday Night Live. And at the very least, they are as close as ever today, so that time away from each other definitely seemed to have helped.

Abbott & Costello, Walter Matthau & Jack Lemmon, and Gene Wilder & Richard Pryor, are three of the biggest and funniest comedy duos of all time. However, for those of us from a different generation, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell were the premier paring, Whether they dazzled on the all-time great sketch comedy show All That, their outrageous Kenan & Kel series, or the two Good Burger movies, Mitchell and Thompson were magic. But it all had to start somewhere, and CinemaBlend just learned about those origins.

I recently sat down with Kenan Thompson, the major Saturday Night Live mainstay, to talk about his part in the new Autotrader “Auto Intelligence” campaign, which combines the brand's industry-leading tools to make the car-shopping process more streamlined and easier than ever before. During our chat, I asked him about the characters he loved playing the most, but what I received instead was an insightful story about him and Kel Mitchell coming up with the “Mavis and Clavis” characters from All That. Interestingly enough, that was also the first time the pair ever got to work together:

For those who don’t remember, Mavis (Thompson) and Clavis (Mitchell) were two elderly hecklers who’d appear in everything from introductions to an All That episode’s musical guest. The pair also appeared in sketches of their own, during which they danced, sang and made some of the most ridiculous statements, all in the hopes of not making each other laugh. In terms of coming up with the characters, Thompson said he and Mitchell realized that they were onto something, and not just with the bit from one of the best ‘90s Nickelodeon shows:

Mavis and Clavis would end up becoming a staple of All That’s first five seasons, with their signature back and forth of “Hey Clavis, wake up! The show is over!” and “Ah yeah, kick it!” being played during the closing credits of every episode during that stretch.

Similarly, Thompson and Mitchell would forever be tied to one another after being main cast members on All That for years. They'd eventually branch off on their own for their eponymous sitcom and Good Burger. Though their relationship wasn’t without its ups and downs, the two have worked together in recent years, and Thompson still holds his longtime comedy partner in high regard. (He also isn’t opposed to a Kenan & Kel revival.)

Hopefully, there’ll come a day when Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell revive Mavis and Clavis for old time’s sake, either for another Autotrader campaign to help folks find a new car (without all the cantankerous observations) or on Saturday Night Live. Speaking of which, you’ll be able to watch SNL Season 51 when the show lands on the 2025 TV schedule on October 4.

The most famous sketch from All That was Good Burger, which saw Keenan and Kel as hapless employees of a fast food restaurant. It was so popular that the sketch got the movie treatment in 1997, and the nostalgia for it was so strong that we got Good Burger 2 in 2023 (available with a Paramount+ subscription). They've even teased additional Good Burger sequels.

Kenan and Kel were such big hits back then that they even got their own Nickelodeon sitcom, simply titled Kenan & Kel. It seems that while people may have watched them for years, a lot of people never knew which one was which.

At the end of the day, Kenan Thompson doesn’t care if people call him by the wrong name. The fact that people get him confused with his friend and co-star is simply an indication that people loved their work together. They can call him whatever they like. He doesn't even bother to correct people when they call him by the wrong name. Thompson continued…

Celebrities actually get mistaken for other celebrities quite often. It's not particularly uncommon, and considering that the two were so often on screen together, this sort of confusion is at least understandable.

It’s one thing if somebody tells you they’re a fan of a piece of work you never actually did. At least Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell were working together, so the fans are telling them how much they love the work they did together, even if they’re not entirely sure who they’re talking to.

As a kid of the '90s, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell became two undeniable pillars of my television upbringing. Watching arguably the best of the best kids TV bestie duos, from All That to their eponymous hit show to Good Burger, I’d follow these two anywhere. After learning that the reunited duo are alluding they’re drawing inspiration from Dom Toretto and crew of Fast and Furious fame for Good Burger 3, it changes nothing for me.

While we’re seeing Thompson again regularly on the 2025 TV schedule via Saturday Night Live, the Game Shakers actor has been slowly returning to the small screen. Mitchell attended the ‘90s Con and talked about all of his classic titles, but also teased some future projects. Via People, the former child star shared that he and Thompson confirmed Good Burger 3 quietly at the end of the sequel, and this is where Fast and Furious comes into play:

I can’t even imagine how they will translate the space journey shown in F9 into Ed and Dexter’s world, but I’m so ready for it. The idea itself is bonkers, but I love it so much and would expect nothing less from the pair of Nickelodeon alumni. As a kid, I always thought, ‘I wonder what Kenan and Kel will do in the future,’ and today, I can finally check that large question off my list (beyond the initial sequel). Thankfully, the overanalyzed K&K falling out era seems to be a thing of the past, along with their rumored SNL feud being put to bed.

If there are any other fans like me out there, I think it’s safe to say we’d pick up any project of theirs regardless of any type of pauses between the two. But thankfully, Mitchell revealed we won’t have to wait as long as us OG fans had to for the fun and nostalgia-filled Good Burger 2. He went on to say that beyond the sequel hint, the threequel is concretely on the way and has been in talks with Thompson about it all:

Again, I have full faith in what these two create. Whether or not it’s a deep-seated connection to childhood favorites or that these two are a creative and hilarious team that continues to make premium content remains to be fully seen, but either way, this fan is thrilled.

Mitchell also mentioned that a revival of Kenan & Kel is being discussed, where the best friends have turned into fathers and will reflect real parts of their own lives. All of it sounds promising, and you better believe I’ll have my Paramount+ account locked and loaded for when it drops.

Until then, I’ll be trying to piece together this fascinating Fast and Furious-inspired storyline for Good Burger 3 that Mitchell highlighted.

In the ‘90s, few TV duos were as well known as Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. The former child stars rose to prominence on Nickelodeon during that decade, and it was their popularity on the variety show that arguably earned them their own sitcom. Both men remain close today though, for a while some questioned the stability of their friendship. That all had to do with rumors regarding Saturday Night Live, which they both auditioned for in the early 2000s but only Thompson was hired. Now, we have the true story behind what went down amid the tryouts and how the rumors got started, thanks to Mitchell.

How Did Kel Mitchell And Kenan Thompson Get Started In The Business Together?

All That – one of the best Nickelodeon shows of the ‘90s – went into development early in the early part of that decade, with ex-Nick producer Dan Schneider among the creative team. In time, the producers hired a fresh crop of young actors to fill out the sketch series’ ensemble, including Josh Server, Lori Beth Denberg and Angelique Bates. The eventual Kenan & Kel stars were also selected and, after the show premiered in 1994, the two teens would become fan favorites.

The dynamic duo were funny individuals on their own but, together, they were a comedic force to be reckoned with. Their Good Burger sketches, which saw Kel Mitchell play fast food employee Ed and Kenan Thompson as construction worker Lester Oakes, were very well received. The same is true for the segments involving Mavis and Clavis, two cantankerous, old men played by the two actors. 

In time, the network decided to capitalize on the chemistry between the two and, in 1996, viewers witnessed the debut of the aforementioned Kenan & Kel (which stokes up thoughts upon a rewatch). The show ultimately ran for four seasons before ending in 2000. And, in between that time, a feature film adaptation of Good Burger (which is also highly rewatchable) was released. 

2019 also saw the two collaborators return to Nick to help oversee the third iteration of All That, which ran from 2019 to 2020. Considering all of the work the trio has done together and that they’re still on good terms today, one might be surprised by any possible feud rumors. But, alas, they did indeed crop up and persist for years.

What Exactly Happened With The Stars’ SNL Auditions?

After Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell finished their runs on Nickelodeon, the two found themselves vying for the same Saturday Night Live position in 2003. Of course, Thompson was the one who landed the gig and, at this point, he’s the longest serving cast member in the NBC show’s history. It was later assumed that his friendship with Mitchell dissipated because of his hiring. During an episode of Club Shay Shay (which is available on YouTube), Mitchell recalled auditioning for the show, saying that his tryout may have been misread by the powers that be due to what he was going through in his personal life at the time. As for crossing paths with Thompson again, he said the following:

Kel Mitchell, who’s recalled his audition before, explained how his material, including a Michael Jackson-centric bit didn’t wow the casting directors. He went on to say that he was “fine” after not getting the audition, as other notable comics had been passed on as well. As Mitchell states, he doesn’t view the situation as him being “upset with” his longtime co-star but simply that they just hadn’t been in contact as much during those years.

During the lengthy interview, the fan-favorite actor went on to say that he’s glad to be in regular contact with Kenan Thompson again and that they’ve even discussing teaming up for more projects following 2023’s Good Burger 2.. As much as I’d love to see the two Nickelodeon veterans working together again, I’m just glad they’re on speaking terms and there’s no animosity between them.

Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell reunited on screen in 2023 for Good Burger 2 (available now with a Paramount+ subscription), a sequel to the original film from 1997, which itself was based on the Nickelodeon sketch show All That. The SNL star and the Dancing with the Stars 28 runner up were an iconic duo for '90s kids, but the two weren't always on the best of terms. Now, almost two decades after the end of their Kenan & Kel sitcom, Thompson has opened up about their falling out.

While Kel Mitchell shared back in 2022 that he and Kenan Thompson would "talk all the time," that wasn't always the case. Thompson was a guest on TODAY to promote his new book, called When I Was Your Age: Life Lessons, Funny Stories & Questionable Parenting Advice from a Professional Clown, and he addressed the period when he and his former Nickelodeon screen partner weren't speaking: 

The passage of time and some development as individuals was all that it took for Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell to rekindle their friendship, to the point that they no longer remembered what had come between them in the first place. For the SNL star, it just "became ridiculous" at a certain point, and he made the overture to reconnect with Mitchell. Thompson continued: 

As a fan of the duo back in their Nickelodeon days, I'm glad to learn that their friendship was strong enough to come right back even after years of not being close. They shared the screen for quite some time, as working on All That turned into Kenan & Kel, which ran on the network from four seasons between 1996 and early 2001. The original Good Burger released in 1997.

Thompson would go on to audition for and join the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2003, and by 2023 he is at the top of the list of Saturday Night Live cast members on the show the longest. He also starred in the sitcom Kenan for two seasons on NBC, even earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead actor in 2021, although the show was cancelled in 2022. 

As for Mitchell, he also tried out for SNL, but did not win a role in the cast after an audition that he described as "a little too crazy." He's also far from the only talented comedian who tried out for SNL and were rejected. In a fun twist, well before Good Burger 2 released, Kel Mitchell appeared in an episode of SNL about a Kenan & Kelly reboot of the original sitcom, with Keke Palmer hosting.

As fans await the arrival of the meatiest sequel of 2023 — I’m obviously talking about Good Burger 2 — star Kel Mitchell experienced a medical situation that sounded anything but good. Thankfully, the actor was able to pull through the initial scare, and shared an update with fans indicating that he was back on the path to full health, which sparked some positive responses from his longtime buddy and occasional co-star Kenan Thompson, as well as other celebs from the worlds of comedy and television. 

Kel Mitchell's Hospital Update

As it was first reported by TMZ, Kel Mitchell was taken to a hospital in the Los Angeles area on the night of Tuesday, November 7, appearing to be conscious and alert as he was brought in through the emergency room. He seemingly remained in the hospital throughout some of the day on November 8, but was back in the comfort of his own home when he shared an update with his fans, friends and followers on Instagram, saying:

It’s still not entirely clear what the root of the problem was that sent Mitchell to the hospital in the first place, but it sounds like it was indeed fairly serious. Hopefully not so serious that his road to recovery is a hard and winding one, however. With the SAG-AFTRA strike now over, he’ll no doubt be eager to finally start promoting Good Burger 2 with fervor, but presumably not until he’s healthy enough to travel and make public appearances. I mean, given how well his last SNL cameo went during Keke Palmer’s ep, he just has to make another one in the next week or two, right?

Kenan Thompson And More Share Support For Kel Mitchell

Understandably, the All That vet’s post was quickly flooded with positive responses, not just from fans hopeful for his recovery, but also quite a few famous faces, some of which Mitchell has shared the screen with over the years. The most notable of the bunch is arguably SNL’s longest running cast member, Kenan Thompson, but check out some of the other stars who spread the love.

Kourtney Kardashian’s Blink 182 Concert Reveal 

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker were open with fans about their desire to start a family, and their struggle with infertility, including unsuccessful IVF attempts, was documented on The Kardashians. The Poosh founder didn’t need to go the extra mile to make her pregnancy announcement a huge celebratory deal — but she did anyway. 

During one of Barker’s concerts with Blink 182, Kardashian held up a sign that read, “Travis I’m Pregnant,” stopping the show long enough for the drummer to go into the audience to kiss his wife. The sign was a throwback to the band’s 1999 music video for “All the Small Things,” which was the perfect way to let the world in on their good news. 

Keke Palmer Surprises Saturday Night Live Viewers

Anything can happen on live TV, and those who tuned in to Saturday Night Live on December 22, 2022, were treated to a surprise pregnancy reveal during Keke Palmer’s monologue. The Nope star appeared in a buttoned-up, floor-length coat and said she wanted to take the opportunity to address certain rumors. In her words: 

The actress whipped open her jacket to reveal her bump, gushing over the fact that, “I’m gonna be a mom!” Two months after her big SNL moment, Keke Palmer gave birth to Leodis Andrellton Jackson, her first child with Darius Jackson, her partner of two years. 

Prince Harry And Meghan Markle Honor Princess Diana With Valentine’s Day Reveal 

Valentine’s Day is a day for love, so the occasion was definitely appropriate for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to announce that they were expecting their second child back in 2021. However, going public on that day had special meaning for the Duke of Sussex. On February 14, 1984 — 37 years to the day of Harry and Meghan’s announcement — Princess Diana and now-King Charles III revealed that they were expecting their own second child (who, of course, was Harry).  

It wasn’t just the pregnancy announcement that honored Harry’s late mother. When Harry and Meghan’s daughter was born that June, they named her Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. 

Tan France Does It For The Dads

Who says moms should get to have all the fun? Queer Eye’s Tan France announced that he and husband Rob were expecting their first child via surrogate in a genius Instagram photo. The fashion guru cradled his “bump,” a.k.a. sonogram photo, as he said this was something the couple had been wanting for many years: 

The way he so modestly covers his bare chest is everything! Their son was born in July 2021, and two years later, in May of 2023, Tan and Rob France announced that they had welcomed a second baby boy, who “completes our little family perfectly,” Tan said. 

Kel Mitchell Celebrates His Wife’s Bun In The Oven 

Look, if you’re known for playing an employee at a fast food burger restaurant, you simply cannot pass up the opportunity for a good “bun in the oven” joke. Kel Mitchell of Good Burger fame and his wife, Asia Lee, fully understood the assignment when they announced that they were expecting their first baby (Mitchell’s third) back in 2017: 

Those of us who grew up in the ‘90s can fully appreciate the references to Kel Mitchell’s famous All That sketch with Kenan Thompson. Good Burger 2 is expected to hit Paramount+ later this year, but it didn’t take that long for Mitchell and Lee to make their own sequel, welcoming their second baby together in 2020. 

Alanis Morissette Creates A Music Video To Announce Baby No. 2 

In many of these classic pregnancy announcements, the celebrities lean into what they are known for, or they use their creative talents in the best way. The artist certainly came out in Alanis Morissette with how she revealed she was expecting her second child with Mario "Souleye" Treadway. Using a song she'd recorded ahead of their son's birth in 2010, the "Ironic" singer surprised her husband with a music video that ended with their family of three looking at sonogram photos:

It's so heart-warming to see the joy that goes into couples' pregnancy announcements, be it on live TV, social media, or elsewhere. It's such a treat for their fans, too, to be allowed into such a big moment for these celebrities and their families. The above reveals are some of the most epic announcements in recent years, and I can't wait to see what the future holds.

The Nickelodeon movie Good Burger featured a number of well-known names like Shaquille O’Neal, Linda Cardellini, Sinbad, and more. So, when Kenan Thompson revealed that Good Burger 2 was in the works, it brought up the question of who we’ll see make a return other than the dynamic All That duo. Well, we got a partial answer to this big question as an iconic Good Burger character has been confirmed to return for the juicy sequel.

Do you remember the character of Roxanne played by Carmen Electra? In Good Burger, she was the film’s sexy antagonist who slow-motion walked to Ed, and attempted to seduce him into sharing his secret sauce recipe for the Mondo Burger. Now, it sounds like Roxanne is coming back as The Baywatch actress posted some exciting news on Instagram about her involvement in the sequel. Take a look at this rapturous photo below.

As you can see in the photo, Carmen Electra is posing, taking a bite out of a cookie with the Good Burger 2 logo on it. Since her caption says “Roxanne is back!”, that means we can expect this beautiful media personality to reprise one of her memorable roles. 

I, for one, am thrilled that Mondo Burger’s seductive henchwoman will be back for the sequel. When you rewatch the first Good Burger movie, you realize her scenes were some of the film’s funniest moments. Ed really put this lady through a lot on their date after accidentally hitting her with a golf ball and flipping her on her back while swerving her advances. Something tells me if Roxanne will be making a cameo appearance, she’s either still after Ed’s secret sauce or maybe he's seeking revenge for the events of 26 years ago.

It looks like Carmen Electra is one cameo hopeful that will be included in the Paramount+ movie. Also on that dream list, according to Kenan Thompson is Sinbad who played Dexter’s hard-ass teacher who demanded money from the slacker teen after crashing his car into his. The SNL alum has also mentioned wanting to make cameo calls to some All That vets like Lori Beth Denberg (who was in the first movie as the fast-talking Connie Muldoon) and Danny Tamberelli. 

As the last movie had NBA star Shaq, who was one of the most famous celebrities of the ‘90s, Thompson had his own list of dream A-List cameos for the sequel as well, which included Harry Styles and even Barack Obama! Overall, it looks like Thompson and Kel Mitchell are trying their hardest to service their fans, and I’m sure they’ll nab some A-listers that will help Good Burger 2 live up to its predecessor. 

Another thing to know about Good Burger 2 is that the plot will follow Dexter as a failed inventor getting his old job back at the iconic fast food joint thanks to his good buddy Ed. However, when Dexter comes up with another risky scheme to put Good Burger on the map, the restaurant faces the possibility of extinction. The writing team behind the All That sketch it was based on as well as the movie will be returning as well as the Kenan & Kel duo, because you know it’s not a Good Burger movie without Thompson and Mitchell. 

As Carmen Electra’s Roxanne plans on reuniting with Dexter and Ed, all I can do is think of all hypothetical ways she could fit into this film's plot. Well, Good Burger is back in business and so is this comedy duo. New behind-the-scenes footage will leave you shocked not only that Mitchell has aged like fine wine, but that he hilariously mentioned while in Ed attire that he has a similar look to Jada Pinkett Smith’s “Stony” from the ensemble heist action film Set It Off. After you take a look at this hysterical Instagram video below, you won’t be able to unsee the shocking resemblance. 

Kel Mitchell’s video not only reveals the iconic Burgermobile in its renovated fashion, but that the All That alum has seen fans’ reactions to saying he looks like Jada Pinkett Smith’s Set It Off character “Stony” who robs a bank with a group of women. He made sure to give a shout-out to the Girls Trip actress and Queen Latifah in his caption. As Mitchell gave us a throwback to this ‘90s film, I’m feeling more nostalgic now than ever before.

Now, I won’t be able to watch this crime heist film the same way again without picturing Ed’s face on “Stony’s” body! With box braids being such a trend in the ‘90s when Good Burger and Set It Off were released, it’s no wonder we see these two characters with the same hairstyle. With Kenan Thompson saying Good Burger 2 is likely to hit Paramount+ sometime around Thanksgiving of this year, maybe that means that box braids can make a comeback with fans of the old and new generations watching the anticipated sequel. 

Something else to know about the upcoming Good Burger 2 movie is that it will bring us into the present day with the return of Dexter Reed, who becomes a failed inventor in need of a job. Who should come to help him but his good buddy Ed who gives him his old job back at Good Burger. But as Dexter’s latest hijinks threaten the existence of Good Burger, everyone will need to come together to prevent another disaster from happening. It’s nice to know that after all of these years, Good Burger has always been there for Dexter as well as his long-time friend and partner. Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert, who wrote the 1997 Good Burger film and All That sketches, will be returning to the upcoming film as well. With the original cast and writing team coming back to serve us a sequel we’ve all been waiting for, this makes us wish the year would go by faster for this movie to hit our Paramount+ subscriptions.

It looks like the mental images of Good Burger's Ed and Set It Off's "Stony" wearing their box braids will stay in our minds for a while. I know Kenan Thompson has his own cameo hopes, but my new one would be Jada Pinkett Smith so she can make an appearance wearing those braids again.

Good Burger 2 is officially happening, with Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell reuniting for a project that originated back during their time together on All That. But a lot has changed since then, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is one of the organizations hoping that the upcoming movie will acknowledge that in a key way, like many other real-life fast food chains already have. PETA is wanting to go vegan, and it's calling out both actors to help. 

The animal rights group that has long made headlines by putting popular things on the spot to ensure the ethical treatment of animals, and the group is now requesting that Good Burger 2 feature the fictional restaurant chain as an all-vegan establishment. In a public letter addressed to both Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, PETA asked for the fictional burger chain to offer an abundance of animal-free offerings: 

You can't forget the secret sauce! The letter went on to include the various ways that cattle are tortured ahead of slaughter and how animal agriculture is a leading cause of climate change. In short, PETA listed a lot of reasons why eating traditional meat and dairy foods is harmful and why it's harmful for Good Burger 2 to promote that.

PETA also pointed out that Good Burger 2 wouldn't exactly be doing anything novel by making this a part of their movie.  Fast food chains and restaurants are increasing their vegan options nationwide, and PETA has the receipts for the various ones already making great strides: 

PETA stated that it would love to meet with the production team of Good Burger 2 to discuss this and provide consultation on the set. As of this writing, neither Kel Mitchell nor Kenan Thompson have publicly responded to the request in any way. It's unclear if the production will take PETA's advice or if it's already two steps ahead and has centered the entire movie around Good Burger chains going vegan. 

While we don't know much about Good Burger 2, it appears there's already a solid script in place. Production on the film is scheduled to start this summer, and the movie will premiere for anyone with a Paramount+ subscription before the end of the year. I can't imagine the film would commit to any widespread changes at this point like the ones PETA is suggesting, but there's always a chance I could be surprised. 

As mentioned, PETA has a habit of targeting big, trending projects and famous celebrities to help spread the word about its efforts to reduce animal cruelty. Whether it's calling out Kim Kardashian or actually congratulating The Walking Dead, PETA is always turning heads. We'll see if PETA actually makes waves with Good Burger 2 or if its request will fall on deaf ears. 

As mentioned, Good Burger 2 is expected to be on Paramount+ by the end of the year. I know I'm going to be one of the first to fire up my account to watch it, regardless of what's on the menu. 

When it comes to sketch comedy, few in the business (if any) have more day-to-day experience than Kenan Thompson, with the comedian having excitedly starred in Saturday Night Live for nearly 20 years, far longer than any other performers. Add in the years he starred on Nickelodeon’s ‘90s juggernaut All That, and he’s been in the sketch comedy world for more years of his life than he hasn’t, which is a wild feat. (Not to mention his appearances in the Kids in the Hall revival, The Amanda Show, and That Damn Michael Che.) So he’s got a lot of options to choose from when it comes to who he thinks the best sketch character of all time is. But did he opt for someone from SNL, Mr. Show, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, or A Black Lady Sketch Show?

Nope. While making a surprise appearance at ‘90s Con for the All That cast panel, Thompson gave it up to Kel Mitchell and praised his co-star’s portrayal of Coach Kreeton as being at the highest level of sketch comedy personas. After Mitchell hollered out a few things in Coach Kreeton’s usual anti-children, gravel-voiced manner, Thompson said:

At which point, both Denberg and Danny Tamberelli acted surprised about Thompson getting it for free, as they joked about having to pay Mitchell for his humor.

The former co-stars have maintained their friendship over the many years since All That ended its initial run on Nickelodeon, and they’ve reconnected quite a few times on screen since. From the All That reboot/revival to Good Burger returns to their big SNL reunion in Keke Palmer’s ep, it’s clear they enjoy spending lots of time together, even if it doesn’t always involve Kel Mitchell going hoarse from making Coach Kreeton jokes.

Now, metaphorical gun to his head, without Kel Mitchell in the same building as other All That stars and thousands of ‘90s Con attendees, does Kenan Thompson freely admit that Coach Kreeton is the greatest sketch character ever? Nobody needs to find out. Although I would be amused if, while under such pressure, he admitted his take on Steve Harvey would be his true choice. 

The topic of Coach Kreeton came up after Lori Beth Denberg talked for a bit about sketches featuring the Loud Librarian, and how she was able to film those without losing her voice. (Basically, she used a more subdued version of the character’s voice during read-throughs and rehearsals, and only went full-force for tapings.) That sparked Kel Mitchell to reflect on how he didn’t bring that kind of practicality to his performance, saying:

The panel then joked about Coach Kreeton's deep breaths being practical for Mitchell, who would indeed run out of breath during those scenes, and others. There's no room for laziness when it comes to the greatest sketch characters in history, after all. 

During the '90s Con panel, which was unfortunately missed by Amanda Bynes ahead of her mental health episode this past weekend, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell also addressed the huge Good Burger 2 news that was revealed on The Tonight Show, saying he thinks the movie will be filmed in the summer with the hopes for a streaming debut before the year is up, among other hopes. 

The nostalgia was real in Hartford, Connecticut this past week, as the city welcomed ‘90s Con – a celebration of the pop culture associated with the totally radical decade. A plethora of actors who starred on hit TV shows at the time were present to participate in panels and chop it up with fans. Among those present were several members of the hit Nickelodeon sketch comedy series All That. However, one of the series’ stars who wasn’t present for the reunion was Amanda Bynes, who committed to appearing but had to drop out. Despite her absence though, co-star Kel Mitchell sent a kind message her way. 

Amanda Bynes missed the massive convention due to illness, according to her representatives. The news may have come as a disappointment to those who were eager to see the former child star alongside her Nickelodeon cohorts again. But leave it to the actors to not forget about their former co-star. Both Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson spoke with ET during the event and addressed Bynes’ unavailability. It was during the chat that Mitchell sent his well wishes and expressed relief that his colleague is doing well these days: 

For those who don’t know, Amanda Bynes (who’s faced legal issues and dealt with substance abuse in the past) had been under a conservatorship since 2013. (Her legal arrangement arguably received more attention as Britney Spears was removed from her own, though Spears’ situation had no direct influence on the former.) By early 2022, Bynes had filed to end the conservatorship, which was a move that her parents supported. The conservatorship was dissolved in March, with the star sharing a grateful message with her fans after the judge’s decision came down.

90’ Con was meant to be the actress’ first public appearance since becoming a free woman. In a statement released earlier this year, she said that she was “really excited” to be linking up with her fellow Nickelodeon alums. The What a Girl Wants icon joined All That at the top of its second season in 1996 and quickly became a hit with viewers for her performances in various sketches. After her stint on the show ended in 2000, she focused much of her energy on her own spinoff show, The Amanda Show. Given her impact on Nick, it would’ve been more than fitting for her to be at the convention. 

There was still plenty of fun to be had during the panel for the beloved series. In addition to Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson, former cast members Lori Beth Denberg and Danny Tamberelli were also on deck to gush about their time on the series. Fans were surely also pumped to hear Thompson and Mitchell tease the newly announced Good Burger 2, which could have some sweet cameos. This surely won’t be the only reunion between the stars and, hopefully, Amanda Bynes will be part of any future potential meet-ups.

Who would have predicted that St. Patrick’s Day 2023 would be most memorable to ‘90s fans for being the date when Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell revealed Good Burger 2 to the world on The Tonight Show, complete with a peek at what host Jimmy Fallon would be like as Ed’s possible father. (Answer: kinda like what you’d think, but with major Ted Logan vibes.) While the project is still in the early goings, Thompson made a surprise appearance at ‘90s Con during the event’s All That panel, giving the thousands in attendance an idea of when we might see the highly anticipated sequel hit Paramount+.

When Good Burger 2 Will Likely Premiere On Paramount+

While All That vet Amanda Bynes was set to appear at ‘90s Con in all her post-conservatorship glory, the actress and quasi-rapper wasn’t able to attend. And just when it seemed like Kel Mitchell, Lori Beth Denberg, and Danny Tamberelli would be a madcap trio for the Q&A panel, Thompson swooped in and made it a masterful quartet. After a bit of whooping and hollering, Good Burger 2 quickly became a most delicious topic of conversation, with the SNL star sharing the optimistic view that it’ll be out before the winter. In his words:

The panel’s moderator noted that it was quite a quick turnaround between filming and release, similar to how the first film came together back in 1997. For Thompson, the quicker things happen, the better off everyone will be, considering we’ve all been waiting for a Good Burger sequel for all of the 21st century and then some. According to the Dexter portrayer:

If South Park’s creators can land a $900 million deal from then-ViacomCBS, then I gotta believe the Good Burger team can squeak out like $100 million for another 5 sequels to Kenan and Kel’s first team-up on the big screen. It’d be fun if they had the same plot trajectory as the F&F films, as ridiculous an uptick as that would be for the fast food workers. 

Kenan Thompson On Possible Good Burger 2 Cameos

Obviously you can't have a Good Burger movie (or any All That project in general) without some unpredictable yet memorable guest stars and cameo appearances. The script has likely been written already, with Kel Mitchell having shared a previous update when the movie wasn't yet confirmed for Paramount+, so one would assume there are cameo roles written in there for certain someones. But perhaps the producers  haven't yet locked down such roles, allowing for Kenan Thompson (and all of us) to ponder over who could show up. 

The first hint he gave was to look over at Lori Beth Denberg and Danny Tamberelli while saying:

Which might sound exciting to me or you, but to the Pete and Pete vet, it was just a hilariously sore reminder that he never got the call about cameoing in the always rewatchable first Good Burger movie, with Denberg appearing along with All That's Josh Server. Amusingly enough, Thompson said it was a matter of who was contacted first, as opposed to anything else. In any case, we can likely expect to see these two in the mix.

After that, the sketch comedy record-breaker voiced a couple of big hopes for Good Burger 2 cameo spots, while also sharing one returning star he can all but guarantee. 

Sinbad's name earned a huge burst of cheers from the crowd, as many would love to see Mr. Wheat again, even knowing that wish comes with some complications. The comedian suffered a stroke in November 2020 that left him unable to walk for an extended stretch, though that's something he's worked hard to reverse in recent months. As such, it's hard to know if and how an appearance would work, but Thompson seems willing to do whatever it takes. 

Carmen Electra, meanwhile, is currently raking in the dough fulfilling OnlyFans requests, which could make her less likely to reappear in the youth-geared comedy. However, Electra loves to post throwback shots on social media, so maybe her appreciation for yester-year will be enough to make her want to. And here's hoping they reach out to all the other big names from the first movie. 

When asked why he namechecked Harry Styles as a Good Burger 2 guest before Barack Obama, Thompson answered in quite the practical way, saying:

Speaking of tough, waiting until at least Thanksgiving for Good Burger 2 is going to feel like the most stretched-out timespan. Thankfully, there's always Good Burger to already watch with Paramount+, along with a bunch of the best Nickelodeon shows of all time. And don't forget to keep an eye out for more news about the next '90s Con heading to Florida later this year.

Fans have been clamoring for news on a Good Burger sequel for a while now. While the project has been rumored for years, the film's OG stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell have been providing updates over the last few months. Now, it looks like fans officially have their wish, as Good Burger 2 has officially gotten the green light and will enter production at Paramount+. And amid the good news becoming public, Thompson and Mitchell spoke out about finally getting to produce a sequel to their beloved '90s teen comedy.

The comedy duo made the official announcement during their appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, much to the excitement of the crowd. In conjunction with the news, the two leading men released statements that were share with THR. Kenan Thompson, in his own message, spoke on the long journey to the much-demanded sequel greenlit:

One would think that getting the Good Burger sequel off the ground was challenging amid multiple rumors and the “will-it-won’t-it-happen” factor regarding whether the pair of stars would reprise their famous roles. After years of false starts and fan inquiries, this announcement is surely a full-circle moment for Kenan Thompson and his co-star. And I'd argue that they owe a lot to the fans for showing the 1997 Nickelodeon movie so much love over the years.

Of course, Kel Mitchell is also amped to don his best surfer accent and Ed’s trademark dreads once again. In his statement, the All That alum spoke about what it means for him to be able to revive his goofy, but sweet, character for a new generation of viewers as well as those who grew up with the OG film:

Fans won’t have to wait long for the eagerly anticipated sequel, as production will start in May, with the movie scheduled to premiere later this year for those with a Paramount+ subscription. The film will see Dexter Reed and Ed reunite 25 years after the events of the first film, with a new motley crew of employees surrounding them. The upcoming film will be directed by Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Modern Family alum Phil Traill from a script penned by OG Good Burger scribes Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert. The writing duo will serve as executive producers on the sequel. There's sure to be a lot of pressure on the cast and crew, but I'm hopeful that Kel Mitchell, Kenan Thompson and. co. can pull it off!

Viewers couldn’t help but gush over her surprise pregnancy announcement, comedic timing and characters throughout multiple sketches. However, one sketch stood out above the rest as it brought back some nostalgia for countless Nickelodeon fans – the “Kenan and Kelly” sketch. Not only did Kenan Thompson reprise his role from the classic teen sitcom, but his former co-star Kel Mitchell made a surprise appearance. The Nope cast member gushed about what it was like working with the Kenan and Kel stars following the ‘90s-infused sketch’s popularity.

The soon-to-be mom stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to talk about various projects she has coming up. The conversation soon turned to the SNL Kenan and Kel reunion. Fallon asked Palmer how the viral sketch came together. As the beloved actress revealed just how it all came together, she professed her love again for the 1990s children’s program.

The SNL sketch allowed Keke Palmer to pay tribute to the art of multi-camera sitcoms. The nostalgia-infused event will take place from March 17-19th at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford. The mini-reunion marks a major professional step for Bynes following the dissolution of her eight-year conservatorship. In a statement shared with the trade, the Amanda Show star expressed her joy about teaming up with her former co-stars again:

Her involvement in the event is more than fitting, considering the kids’ sketch comedy series jumpstarted her TV and film career. Seeing Amanda Bynes with Kel Mitchell, Lori Beth Denberg, and Danny Tamberelli  will be a real treat for the All That fandom, to say the least. I'm hoping that we get some sweet-behind-the-scenes details from the set of the classic series. We'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out. One my favorite TV shows growing up was Kenan & Kel — which I was thankfully able to revisit on Netflix not too long ago and continued to binge to completion with a Paramount+ subscription later. So, you can imagine my delight when I saw the stars of the ‘90s Nickelodeon sitcom, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, reunite on a Saturday Night Live sketch imagining a modern revival with Keke Palmer called Kenan & Kelly.

The cameo from Mitchell — also known from sketch comedy series All That, its 1997 feature-length spin-off Good Burger, and the underrated superhero movie Mystery Men — was especially exciting because it feels like he kind of just disappeared after Kenan & Kel ended in 2000. In fact, he was even rumored to be dead at one point, but, as his more recent sightings have proved, he is alive and well and we have just not been paying enough attention. So, in that case, let’s take a look at the movies and TV shows of his that some might have missed over the years. Awww, here it goes!

Kel Mitchell has not just been busy with acting, having also taken up a career as a youth pastor and written a couple of books — a devotional called Blessed Mode and a children’s novel called Prank Day. However, it looks like he might actually be returning to another one of his most iconic roles if his recent comments regarding a sequel to Good Burger effectively come to fruition.

The Good Burger 2 announcement sent fans of the original film into a frenzy after stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell had teased the return of Ed and his Good Burger crew. There hasn’t been much news since Thompson revealed the much-delayed sequel was happening a few months ago. Well, the movie duo’s other half Mitchell opened up about where the follow-up is in the production process. The All That alum offered an exciting update about reteaming with his close friend.

The comedic actor was promoting his upcoming projects during his interview on the Jemele Hill is Unbothered podcast. Following a lack of updates, host Jemele Hill pressed Mitchell on the status of Good Burger 2. After mentioning Thompson was the one who spilled the long-delayed sequel news prematurely, the Mystery Men star gave an unexpected update on the film’s script with a surprise development.

Wow. A finished script and a table read already when the film was just announced in August. It may have taken two decades to get a Good Burger sequel, but it seems Mitchell and Thompson are more than ready for fans to see Ed and Dexter back on screen again. Mitchell’s glowing words about the script will make devoted fans want to see the comedy sequel even more. Of course, the comedian has been ready for a sequel to happen for some time. With a recent table read, that means the script was possibly in the works when Thompson made the big announcement.

Good Burger 2 had a script, which makes you wonder what the story will be. Are Ed and Dexter still friends? How have they grown since the 1997 cult classic? Is Ed still working at Good Burger after all these years (outside of the 2015 Tonight Show Good Burger skit)? Having a completed script is fine, but are the Kenan and Kel stars will be the only stars returning to the sequel, or will other familiar faces pop up as well? Of course, elderly Otis and beloved fry cook Spatch won’t be back as Abe Vigoda and Ron Lester both passed away in 2016. Hopefully, fans will see the return of Ed and Dexter’s respective love interests, Heather and Monique, played by Linda Cardellini and Shar Jackson, respectively. Maybe viewers will get to hear the iconic “We’re All Dudes” song once more.

Despite its cult status amongst Millennials, the original Good Burger received mixed reviews from critics. But it was fans of the original All That skits that made the buddy comedy a commercial success with $23.7 million at the box office. The cult classic is now getting the sequel it deserved under the watchful eyes of Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell.

Given their big success as child stars, many Saturday Night Live fans hoped Keke Palmer and Kenan Thompson would do a Nickelodeon sketch together when she hosted the sketch comedy show this weekend. It’s difficult to predict how much an SNL host might reference their past with specific sketches. In this case, she helped to reference Kenan’s past in the form of a reboot of 90s favorite Kenan & Kel.

Retitled Kenan & Kelly, the reboot saw the two working in a convenience store and blended the goofy and irreverent humor of the original show with a gritty and hardened inner city realism in an attempt to win an Emmy for Keke Palmer. The result is a really fun sketch that just so happens to feature 90s Nickelodeon legend Kel Mitchell in a big role. Check it out…

For those of you who didn’t grow up a 90s kid, Kel Mitchell was essentially Kenan Thompson’s sketch comedy partner before SNL. As teenagers, the two starred together on the shows All That and Kenan & Kel, as well as in the movie Good Burger before they grew up and went their separate ways. Thompson joined Saturday Night Live, where he’s been a regular for two decades, while Mitchell starred in Mystery Men and other projects. 

Those wanting to see the two together have had a lot of reasons for optimism so far this year. Mitchell made a cameo in a sketch when Thompson hosted the Emmy Awards, and there has been some positive momentum on the long awaited Good Burger sequel, which sounds like it could actually happen. How much fun would that be?

For now though, the surprise Saturday Night Live reunion will have to do. Thankfully, fans cannot get enough of it. Tons hit up Twitter to gush about how excited they were to see the two back together. The tweet below has over 4,000 likes as an example…

That’s far from the only one too. Numerous fans took to Twitter to talk about how much they loved Kenan & Kel as kids and how many feelings it brought back to see the two together again. For Palmer, the sketch was really special too. After the episode aired, she went on Instagram to talk about how meaningful it was for her to be in the bit. She called it the “highlight of (her) life” and shared how “influential” the two were on her development. Here’s the full quote from her Instagram story…

Keke Palmer wasn’t yet acting during Kenan and Kel’s run, but she, of course, played the lead role in her own Nickelodeon show True Jackson, VP for three seasons. Since she departed the show in 2011, her career has steadily picked up momentum. Most recently, she earned rave reviews for her performance in Jordan Peele’s Nope. It turns out she’s also pregnant, which she revealed in epic fashion during her monologue.

Given her soon to be expanding family, I’m not sure what Palmer’s schedule is going to look like over the next year, but if Good Burger 2 gets off the ground, something tells me she’d be a perfect fit for at least a cameo. Fingers crossed it happens!

As for SNL, it's hard to imagine many hosts outperforming Keke Palmer, who was excellent throughout her episode, but thankfully, the show is bringing in some ringers as upcoming SNL hosts. Returning favorites Steve Martin and Martin Short from Only Murders In The Building are pulling double duty next week, and breakout star Austin Butler from Elvis will be there on December 17th. 

Coolio’s death at age 59, which reportedly stemmed from cardiac arrest shocked both the general public and the entertainment world. His passing led to an outpouring of condolences and tributes from the likes of Ice Cube and Weird Al Yankovic. One of those moving tributes came from Kenan & Kel’s Kel Mitchell. Of course, most 1990s Nickelodeon fans remember the “Fantastic Voyage” rapper as the artist who crafted the Nickelodeon sitcom’s theme song. If you're like me, you can likely picture the singer bopping around with Mitchell and Kenan Thompson during the show’s opening credits. Now, after the star's passing, Mitchell is discussing the music icon's work on the beloved theme.

The Good Burger icon opened up about working with the Grammy-winning rapper while speaking to ET. He explained that his and Coolio’s friendship goes back to the latter's guest spot during Season 1 of the revered Nickelodeon sketch show All That. On top of that, the late rapper also allowed the comedic actor to rap at one of his concerts during his heyday in the '90s.

So, by when the two All That alums got a spinoff show, the “Gangsta’s Paradise” rapper seemed to be the obvious choice to perform the iconic theme song. Kel Mitchell revealed that many musical guests, including the late rapper, would gel well with the show’s cast and crew:

So Coolio was more than a natural fit for the Kenan & Kel gig, and I, for one am thankful that those relationships led to the late rapper getting it. Of course, while he create the song, things went up a notch once he joined Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson on the set of the theme song’s video, which is the show's intro. Those who've seen the opening, know that it looks like a huge party. Kel Mitchell revealed that that vibe was real, as he opened up about how the video shoot went down:

The comedian was right to say the theme can play in the club or any kind of other dance spot, and that sentiment speaks volumes about Coolio’s ability to maintain his lyricism while performing for a kids’ show. Many can likely still recall hearing the A+ track when the show dropped new episodes on SNICK on Saturday nights. Sad news hit the world last night when the untimely passing of Coolio at age 59 was announced. An award-winning rap icon, the man inspired his fans, and left some beautiful pop culture moments along the way. Today, the entertainment world is paying its respects, as Ice Cube, Weird Al, and others have posted loving tributes for Coolio. 

Starting things off, actor and fellow rapper Ice Cube tweeted his condolences. He honored the rapper by including some context of how he knew Coolio in reference to his own musical career, in the following bittersweet post:

Of course, with one of Coolio’s biggest hits being “Gangsta’s Paradise,” there were two parties that the world was likely expecting to see tributes from. Weird Al Yankovic was one of those people, as his song parody “Amish Paradise” became a huge hit in its own right, despite not having the original artist’s approval. The matter was eventually squashed, leaving Coolio and Weird Al as friendly parties; a fact remembered in Yankovic’s own tribute below: 

Parody aside, this iconic Coolio track became popular in the first place because of its creation for the 1995 drama Dangerous Minds. “Gangsta’s Paradise” was the hit single from the film’s soundtrack, and even won Coolio several awards, including a Grammy. 

Michelle Pfeiffer starred in the music video, and the film. The experience is something she discusses in her Instagram post bidding her former co-star a fond farewell: 

Known as somewhat of an actor himself. Also known by the name Artis Leon Ivey Jr., the rapper played many parts in movies and TV shows. There was even a point where Coolio was almost a Batman villain, thanks to a deal made to secure his performance in Batman and Robin. Part of his acting experience is what brought All That veteran Kel Mitchell to social media, as he shared the story of how he met Coolio during his guest spot on the Nickelodeon show: 

It’s also worth noting that should you take a nostalgic trip to revisit Nickelodeon’s classic sitcom Kenan and Kel, Coolio was an important part of that project as well. No matter what opportunities presented themselves in front of the camera, or in the recording booth, as was the case with animated series like Futurama, music was still what made Coolio truly iconic. Celebrity admirers like Viola Davis tweeted memories that signaled just as much:

Also on hand to pay tribute to Coolio’s passing was musician and actor Questlove from The Roots. One of 2022’s Academy Award winners, he shared a very simple message of condolences through Twitter that showed nothing but love and appreciation:

Saturday Night Live icon Kenan Thompson took over hosting duties for the 74th Emmy Awards, and started out the night in a big way with a dance number to some beloved TV theme tunes. A more traditional monologue followed, and – unsurprisingly – he nailed all of the comedic bits of the job. But possibly the biggest highlight of him as host was his unexpected reunion with none other than Kel Mitchell, a.k.a. his Kenan & Kel and Good Burger co-star from the '90s. 

The reunion came at the end of a sketch all about Kumail Nanjiani playing bartender and being too busy to banter with the host, followed by Kenan Thompson approaching a man who seemed to be passed out with his head on the bar. This wasn't a random man who needed a drink, however – he was Kel Mitchell, and he was in the mood for a Good Burger! Whether or not Thompson knew that the reveal was coming, he was clearly delighted and wasted no time in hugging his former co-star and jumping around with him.

Kenan Thompson may have made a joke about viewers over 50 not knowing what Peacock is and viewers under 20 not knowing what NBC is, but I think it's safe to say that millennials (and maybe anybody who discovered Kenan & Kel on Netflix) knew something special when we saw it with the Good Burger reunion! The timing couldn't be better, as it comes less than a month after Thompson dropped some promising comments about a possible Good Burger 2. 

I'm also not alone in finding the Kenan Thompson/Kel Mitchell reunion a highlight of the night, even compared to the reveal of the 2022 Emmy winners. There were plenty on Twitter who were also enjoying the blast to the '90s past:

Who could have guessed ahead of the Emmys that Kel Mitchell would show up to support Kenan Thompson? He did tweet a "let's go" message to his former co-star ahead of the Emmys to show his support, but fans had no way of knowing that he'd show up in the flesh as well.

I can't speak for anybody else, but I was about ready to hit up my Netflix subscription during the Emmys' commercial breaks to revisit their days on Kenan & Kel and All That, both of which are available streaming now. It was both a fun blast the past and a pretty wholesome interlude in the broadcast:

Kel Mitchell (who retweeted Thompson's post) recently shared that he loves watching Kenan on Saturday Night Live and that they "talk all the time," but fans can enjoy that this reunion happened live and in front of cameras for the world to enjoy. It’s been a quarter of a century since Kel Mitchell’s Ed welcomed us to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, and if he were in fact to take our order, there’s a pretty big contingent of fans who are still hoping to sink their teeth into a sequel to the 1997 delicious food movie. It turns out that all hope is not lost, as Kenan Thompson offered an update on the possibility of the former All That comedy duo donning their blue striped shirts again.

While “We’re All Dudes” singer Kel Mitchell played it coy when speaking to CinemaBlend about whether or not Good Burger 2 could still happen, Kenan Thompson said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that there is effort being put into such a project. When the talk show host asked if the Saturday Night Live cast member could confirm that a sequel is happening, Thompson said:

It sounds like the Kenan & Kel stars are actually trying to make a sequel a reality, and saying that they’re working “harder than ever” sounds really promising, if it’s even still an option 25 years later. The host of the 2022 Emmy Awards was pretty vague on details, only making jokey references to “the numbers,” but I still think fans can count this as a win. Kenan Thompson continued joking around when Jimmy Fallon asked him if he had any plot ideas, noting that:

That is actually a plotline I can totally see happening. The subject of a sequel came up on The Tonight Show when Jimmy Fallon pointed out that Good Burger celebrated its 25th anniversary this July. When the actors marked the occasion on Instagram, they included in the caption the simple and unassuming question, “‘Sup wit that Part 2?!” leading to much excitement from the host about the prospect. Judging from the reactions to the post, it’s clear that Good Burger still resonates with the fans. Not only have both of the actors now expressed the desire to “give the people what they want,” as Kel Mitchell said in the comments, but the post drew excited responses from several big names. Fellow All That and Good Burger actor Josh Server definitely seemed ready to reclaim his place at the drive-thru window, commenting:

Carmen Electra dropped in her own winning comment, with a subtle, “#RoxanneForTheWin 😂🙌,” and the post also elicited reactions from actor Seth Green and NFL star J.J. Watt, with Modern Family veteran Rico Rodriguez asking where he can fill out a job application.

Kel Mitchell previously revealed to CinemaBlend that he and Kenan Thompson had a three-picture deal with Paramount, which resulted in the 2000 TV movie Two Heads Are Better Than None. However, a third movie was never made, the actor said. We’ll definitely remain hopeful that this project finally comes to fruition, even if it is over two decades later. Kel Mitchell most definitely gave it his all while working on Good Burger, which I recently rewatched on the heels of the movie’s limited edition Blu-ray steelbook hitting shelves. The Nickelodeon alum was pitch-perfect in the role of the dense, but sweet, Ed, and the performance still holds up today. While Mitchell’s work on screen is commendable, he also deserves praise for providing the teen comedy with its signature song. “We’re All Dudes” is essentially the film’s anthem and is still fondly remembered by fans. According to Mitchell, the song came together in an interesting way too, and that process involved him pitching it in a somewhat awkward (but funny) way.

“We’re All Dudes” was performed by Kel Mitchell and Less Than Jake and was recorded as part of the film’s soundtrack in 1997. In the movie, the song can be heard during a montage that shows the titular restaurant thriving due to Ed’s sauce. Additionally, it plays during the end credits. As a fan of the track, I asked Kel Mitchell about its conception while speaking with him in celebration of the film’s 25th anniversary and steelbook release. The beloved star explained that All That (where Good Burger originated) served as a solid jumping-off point for the soundtrack. And from there, it sounds like things moved rather quickly:

The decision to craft a top-tier list of music for the movie definitely makes sense since the series that birthed it (which is streamable with a Netflix subscription) gifted viewers with awesome tunes. And creating a song around Ed’s “I’m a dude” jingle was also a good idea, though I’m not sure the actor could’ve imagined that he’d have such a short amount of time to get things together. However, he got to work right away, before pitching the song to the powers that be:

I’m not sure that I could’ve performed the entire song in front of a group of execs. Then again, I don’t have the fearless attitude that the actor and musician has, and thank goodness for that demeanor. Had he not been eager, there’s a chance we might not have the fan-favorite track.

Of course, the “We’re All Dudes” song is just one part of the movie’s legacy. There are memorable performances and plenty of hilarious moments that can still crack up audiences today. During our chat, Kel Mitchell talked about the scene he shot with Kenan Thompson that still resonates with him after two decades. Mitchell also discussed not getting to do a sequel, which I still wouldn’t mind seeing if there’s a good story in mind. Despite that, the film has remained in the public consciousness. The Good Burger skit was revived for The Tonight Show several years ago and, while Mitchell was involved with the All That revival, he brought it back again. 

Kel Mitchell’s signature track may have come together in a way that he wasn’t expecting, but we’re all the better for having it. It’s wonderful to know that it still gets so much love today – and that Mitchell is still rightfully getting residuals as well. 

Good Burger’s 25th anniversary limited edition Blu-ray steelbook is now available.

It’s been over two decades since the release of Good Burger, and the Nickelodeon movie remains as popular as ever. The film, which was based on the All That sketch of the same name, did solid box office numbers for Paramount. So with the duo’s popularity and the financial reception, one can’t help but scratch their head when considering that the movie never got a big or small-screen follow-up. Kel Mitchell recently shared some thoughts on not having gotten the chance to do a sequel and also weighed in on whether such a project can still happen. 

I spoke with Kel Mitchell in celebration of Good Burger’s 25th anniversary and the release of its limited edition Blu-ray steelbook. During the conversation, I couldn’t help but ask whether there were ever any discussions regarding a sequel immediately after the movie’s release in 1997. And the beloved actor revealed that while another feature didn’t actually happen, he and Kenan Thompson were indeed contracted for one: 

For those who aren’t aware, Two Heads Are Better Than None was the 2000 TV movie that served as the series finale of Kenan & Kel, a show that fans are still enjoying via Netflix. It’s honestly a shame that the studio didn’t follow through with that third film, especially when you consider just how talented the two lead stars were (and still are). Of course, we’re currently living in the age of sequels, revivals and reboots, so just about anything is possible. After all, there was a time when Nickelodeon fans like myself didn’t think the nostalgia-filled Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie would ever see the light of day. 

It’s worth mentioning that the fast food-centered flick did technically receive a sequel, though it was released as a novel. The book, called Good Burger 2 Go, sees the lovable Ed following a short-changed customer around the globe, while the restaurant he loves experiences a crisis. The story is enjoyable, but it’s hard not to consider that it would’ve been even cooler to watch it play out on the big screen.

It’s been interesting to see how Brian Robbins’ teen comedy has managed to stand the test of time. While fans continue to enjoy it, Kel Mitchell continues to feel the love as well and can definitely appreciate the movie years later. During our interview, Mitchell also revealed the scene he and Kenan Thompson filmed that still resonates with him today. In recent years, the two revived the Good Burger skit for The Tonight Show, and it returned again when Mitchell was involved with the All That revival.

There doesn’t seem to be any true movement on a sequel right now, and such a thing may be a longshot at this point. But like so many fans, I’m not ready to raise the white flag just yet and, as Kel Mitchell suggested, I’ll be keeping my ear to the street for any updates on the matter.

Over the years, cinema has produced some truly memorable buddy comedies, from Some Like It Hot And The Blues Brothers to Thelma & Louise and Superbad. One film in the genre that’s truly found its way into viewers’ hearts is Good Burger. The 1997 Nickelodeon movie, which served as a vehicle for rising stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, was an interesting way for Paramount Pictures to build on Nick’s film portfolio. However, it proved to be a commercial success and, over two decades later, it’s still highly popular. Ahead of its 25th anniversary, I rewatched the movie myself, and a few thoughts ran through my head as I did. 

Good Burger, directed by Brian Robbins (the current CEO of Paramount and Nick), was adapted from the All That sketch of the same name. The breezy romp centers on the dim-witted, but lovable Ed, who teams up with high school underachiever Dexter Reed to save the restaurant he’s devoted his life to. The result is a humorously sweet adventure about friendship, loyalty and fast food. I’ve watched the film many times but not as critically as I did this time around. So let's stop wasting time and start talking out these thoughts, dudes! 

Kel Mitchell’s Performance As Ed Is Somehow Even Better Than I Remembered 

It goes without saying that Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell were a comedy dream team, as Nickelodeon fans are still enjoying their namesake show on Netflix today. However, Mitchell deserves a considerable amount of individual praise. I always thought he was perfect in the role of Ed, but I don’t think I truly realized just how well cast he was.

While watching the movie this time around, I (once again) chuckled during his major moments like the strawberry jacuzzi and the date night sequence. Though I also marveled at how the then-18-year-old star managed to balance comedy with sincerity. Kel Mitchell has spoken of his disastrous SNL audition, though, when thinking about his work in this movie, it still baffles may that he never made the leap to the next level of sketch comedy like his co-star. 

Good Burger Pushed The Boundaries When It Came To What Nickelodeon Could Do In A Kids’ Movie 

Something that truly hit me while rewatching Good Burger is that the flick really walked a fine line content-wise. It’s definitely made for kids, providing the jokes and slapstick that delight younger audiences. However, there are a few moments that are so explicitly aimed at adults that it’s amazing that the studio actually OK’d them. For instance, there’s Ed’s unintentional jab regarding Dexter’s absent father, and don’t even get me started on Carmen Electra’s role as Roxanne. 

But, what I had to remember is that this film was released during the early days of Nickelodeon Movies, when the banner’s only production up to that point was Harriet the Spy. So the creatives had some serious wiggle room, as the company attempted to establish the tone of its cinematic ventures. Eventually, the studio would mostly opt for traditional (and enjoyable) animated ventures, many of which were adapted from Nick’s famous shows. There weren’t too many adult or teen-oriented comedies after GB, except for the so-so 1998 comedy Snow Day, 2006's fun Nacho Libre and the cringey 2012 Halloween picture Fun Size. Simply put, I really wish that Nick had been able to make more of those “edgier” live-action projects. 

Good Burger Effectively Utilized Veteran Comedians Abe Vigoda And Sinbad 

 While the two leads are more than capable of carrying the movie, they’re also accompanied by a fun group of actors. Among that group of supporting players are comedy legends Abe Vigoda and Sinbad. Fans are sure to remember that the former plays elderly and cantankerous Good Burger fry cook Otis, while the latter portrays Dexter’s endlessly unlucky and ‘70s-obsessed teacher, Mr. Wheat. Neither star gets a ton of screen time but, when they do appear, they never waster their moments.

When I first watched Good Burger as a child, I only barely knew who Sinbad was due to his appearances in some other kid-friendly fare (Sesame Street, First Kid, etc.). As you’d expect, I also had no idea just how revered Abe Vigoda was. Their talents are definitely apparent to me now, though. Whether it’s Mr. Wheat lamenting the destruction of his car and mailbox or Otis dryly muttering, “I should’ve died years ago,” both stars hit their marks. Now, more than ever, I remain in awe of the fact that the producers saw fit to cast them. 

The Good Burger Soundtrack Is Nothing Short Of Impeccable 

You really can’t talk about this movie without discussing the music and, man, does it deliver on that front. This film is a ‘90s release and, as such, it features a soundtrack that’s very true to the time. 702’s “All I Want,” Warren G’s “Friends,” and Mint Condition’s “That's the Way (It's Goin' Down)” are just a few of the tracks you’ll find. Though I’m a ‘00s kid, hearing these songs still stirred up some nostalgia within me. 

Of course, multiple generations are familiar with the feature’s most iconic tune – “We’re All Dudes,” performed by Kel Mitchell and Less Than Jake. The song still slaps over two decades later and, in hindsight, it’s actually pretty progressive, considering that it uses “dude” as a gender-neutral term. I’m confident that folks will continue to revisit this song and the soundtrack as a whole for the foreseeable future. 

Nickelodeon Should’ve Made More Films Based On All That Sketches 

Good Burger was, and still is, one of All That’s signature sketches. Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell even revived it for a skit on The Tonight Show several years ago. Still, the classic show had a number of other great recurring characters that would’ve been prime fodder for cinematic endeavors. Thompson’s SuperDude, Mitchell’s Coach Kreeton, and Josh Server’s Detective Dan are only a few of the funny personalties that could’ve made the jump to the big screen. 

Looking back, one can’t help but wish that Nick had parlayed the film’s success into a string of sketch-adapted features.  As mentioned though, the studio eventually transitioned to animated theatrical content almost exclusively. I’d personally still love to see the likes of Ms. Piddlin or Repairman get films via streaming services. The chances of such projects happening are slim but, then again, I never thought I’d see Thomspson or Mitchell involved in an All That revival, either. 

Additional Thoughts 

Good Burger is a pretty straightforward film, though it did give me plenty of things to chew on. Here are a few more thoughts that came to mind during my latest viewing: 

• Jan Schweiterman deserves more credit for his work as campy villain Kurt Bozwell.
• Shaquille O’Neal and George Clinton’s cameos are so much fun. 
• The more I watch it, the more evident it becomes that Drake Bell and Josh Peck owe the Kenan & Kel stars a lot for opening the doors for them. 
• The mental institution sequence, while fun, doesn’t hold up as well, considering how we view mental health today. 
• Carmen Electra’s presence will always be hilarious. 
• I still want to know what was actually used to make the “Ed sauce.” 
• If someone could crack a sequel, I’d be down for it.

In the ‘90s, very few comedy duos could rival the formidable performers that were Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson. Nickelodeon fans first saw their talents on display in the storied sketch comedy series All That before they received their own spinoff series, Kenan & Kel. But of course, the two young stars would make the jump to the big screen in 1997 via Good Burger. The classic flick contains a number of memorable moments featuring the two actors and, as the movie celebrates its 25th anniversary and drops a new limited edition Blu-ray steelbook, Mitchell is opening up about the scene that still resonates with him to this today.

Where can one even start when it comes to listing Good Burger’s greatest moments. There’s the “strawberry jacuzzi” scene, the escape from Demented Hills Asylum and of course, the date night sequence featuring Carmen Electra’s Roxanne. However, the scene that Kel Mitchell has in mind is a bit more intimate. I had the pleasure of speaking with the comedy vet in celebration of the Nickelodeon movie’s milestone anniversary and steelbook Blu-ray release. And when I asked about a favorite scene featuring him and Kenan Thompson’s characters, he named the rooftop hangout as an element that has stayed with him:

The scene in question shows Kel Mitchell’s Ed and Kenan Thompson’s Dexter Reed taking in the night sky while chilling on top of the titular fast food eatery’s roof. It’s during this moment that the teens really get to know each other, after getting off to a rough start earlier in the film. Most notably, Dexter even opens up about his absent father, which draws the on-brand response that Mitchell mentioned above. 

It’s not just the sentimental aspect of the scene that stands out for the Mystery Men alum, however. For him, it also represents the notion that the filmmakers and Nickelodeon as a whole wanted the project to appeal to viewers of all ages:

The film was only the second production to be released under Nick’s theatrical division (the first being 1996’s Harriet the Spy adaptation). With that, the company still seemed to be experimenting when it came to tone, which allowed for a bit of creative flexibility for the buddy comedy. The joke about Dexter’s dad is definitely a prime example of that as is the previously mentioned sequence with Carmen Electra's character. 

The ‘90s box office hit remains a key part of Nickelodeon’s history and Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell’s careers. While many are still watching Kenan & Kel on Netflix as we speak, plenty of people still rave about their big-screen buddy comedy and the TV sketch on which it’s based. Its legacy is so strong that Thompson and Mitchell revived the Good Burger skit for The Tonight Show in 2015, and it was again performed by Mitchell on the All That revival.

At this point, it’s safe to assume that the movie will continue to be heralded for years to come. It’s really great to see that the general public still has love for it, but what’s even sweeter is knowing that Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson (who has given props to Nick before) still appreciate it over two decades later.

Millennial-aged Nickelodeon fans have a lot to celebrate, as multiple fan-favorites from the network’s “golden era” have been added to Netflix. Among those recent arrivals is Kenan & Kel, which of course starred All That cast members Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. While fans are excited to rewatch the beloved comedy, with or without a Good Burger in hand, there is one glaring issue that some have spoken up about: a Netflix subscription won't actually get you all of the available seasons.

All That, Kenan & Kel, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, and Zoey 101 were all recently added to Netflix, making OG Nickelodeon fans very happy for the chance to relive all of the orange soda reverence. What's adding to the glee is the fact that the shows all essentially popped up without a lot of promotional fanfare, making one Twitter user quite happy that they actually have something to watch:

Another Twitter user is giving Netflix major props for adding some rare Nickelodeon gems to the streamer, although there's a bit of shade also in the mix, given the idea of this being a "rare" win. 

Unfortunately, much like how things went when Netflix added iCarly, only the first two seasons of Kenan & Kel are available to stream, without any clear sign of whether or not the other two seasons would be available. Even though two seasons of Kenan & Kel on Netflix is definitely better than none, it would be even better if all four seasons would be added. This isn't exactly a rare thought, either. In the early hours of the series dropping on the streamer, _JohnnyDaughter took to Twitter to request peace of mind from the streaming giant.

Fear not, though, anyone who believes it impossible to peep out the third and fourth seasons online. Twitter user imhimcapo is making sure that people know the true streamer to use, as all four seasons are indeed available with a Paramount+ subscription.

Regardless of the missing episodes, people are still plenty enthused about being able to watch at least some seasons of Nickelodeon favorites. And you can bet people even brought up Netflix’s subscriber loss as a reason for adding shows geared toward younger money-spending generations. They have to bring up subscribers one way, and they definitely seem to know their audience if that’s the case:

Luckily fans do have the option to watch the entire series on Paramount+ in the U.S., and who wouldn’t? It does raise the question of why Netflix wouldn’t or couldn't just add the entire series alongside other Nickelodeon series. It’s possible that with the show already on Paramount+, there were contractual stipulations limiting how much could end up elsewhere. At least there are various ways to watch. 

Last year, Kenan Thompson gave his former network credit for his current and long-running career on Saturday Night Live. Thompson began on All That before getting his own show with his All That co-star Kel Mitchell. According to Mitchell, the two still “talk all the time,” giving fans further hope that they'll bring some of those reunions to TV in the future.

Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell’s friendship (both on and off screen) was widely loved by viewers who watched Nickelodeon back in the '90s. Between their years on All That and their beloved sitcom, Kenan and Kel, the two seemed to be practically inseparable. But does the comedic pair hang out now? Well, Mitchell has provided some clarity on the state of their friendship and also discussed his old colleague's role on Saturday Night Live.

After the cancellation of Kenan and Kel in 2000, the two lead stars parted ways creatively. Rumors of a falling out between them would emerge around the time they both auditioned for SNL in 2003. While Kenan Thompson became the show’s longest-running cast member, Kel Mitchell didn’t get hired due to what he considers to be a disastrous audition. That situation doesn't seem to have affected their friendship, though, as the two still appear to be close (as evidenced by their Good Burger reunion on The Tonight Show in 2015. And Mitchell seems to enjoying seeing his friend on the NBC sketch comedy series:

You love to see this kind of support among stars, especially those who are as closely associated with each other as the two Nick alums are. Sure, former co-stars may not be all that close in some instances. Yet when you've been through what these two have, it's easy to see why their bond has remained strong. And based on Kel Mitchell's later comments during his interview with Yahoo!, their relationship and on-screen chemistry was truly strengthened during their All That tenure:

That was a brilliant move on the producers’ part to capitalize on the chemistry the two had in order to create comedic gold. I, for one, am grateful for that, especially considering the quality work the two were able to gift viewers with during their time as child stars.

The slime-centric kids network seemed to have a big impact on the stars. Kenan Thompson previously credited Nick for his ability to balance his job as an Saturday Night Live cast member and his duties on his NBC sitcom, Kenan. The work ethic he cultivated back in his teen years is probably why he's had such a long run on the NBC sketch show and has been able to reach major SNL milestones in the process. 

Through all their professional and personal highs and lows though, it's just comforting to know that Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are still close. Let's hope we get to see more of their camaraderie on screen sooner rather than later.

Saturday Night Live has served as the jumping off point for countless comedians throughout the show's 48-year history, but just because someone doesn't make it on the show doesn't necessarily mean their career is over. Do names like Donald Glover, Jim Carrey, Aubrey Plaza, and Jennifer Coolidge sound familiar? Well, they should, as each of them became comedy superstars in the years following their failed SNL auditions. Here are some of the biggest comedians who didn’t make the cut but still found success in the entertainment industry. 

Jennifer Coolidge

Over the course of the past quarter-century, Jennifer Coolidge has had a remarkable career, with big-screen appearances in movies like American Pie, Legally Blonde, and various Christopher Guest mockumentaries. And more recently, Coolidge stole every one of her scenes on The White Lotus, a performance that won her multiple awards. But as she explained in a 2004 Los Angeles Magazine oral history on The Groundlings sketch comedy troupe, she tried out for Saturday Night Live alongside future cast members Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, and Chris Kattan in 1995 prior to her career really taking off:

As great as it would have been to see Coolidge week-in and week-out with some of the best SNL casts of all time, it’s hard to say if we would have ever been given iconic characters like Tanya McQuoid.

John Mulaney

In addition to being one of the best standup comedians with a collection of tremendous specials, John Mulaney was also a longtime writer for Saturday Night Live. But as Mulaney explained in the SNL Stories from the Show video in April 2020, he was originally brought on to audition as a member of the cast back in August 2008. A few days after the audition, which included a spot-on Law & Order bit, the comedian received a phone call that would change his life: 

Mulaney would go on to create the unforgettable Stefon character with Bill Hader, come up with some of the most absurd SNL musical numbers, and become one of the sharpest and most honest standups of his generation.

Tiffany Haddish

In the past decade, Tiffany Haddish has established herself as one of the biggest comedians on the planet with smash hit movies like Girls Trip, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and the upcoming Haunted Mansion, but as the actress and Ali Wong discussed at the Tuca & Bertie premiere (via Decider) in 2019, Haddish tried out for Saturday Night Live prior to her career really taking off.

Joking about the situation, Haddish said she told SNL that she would be hosting “next time,” and that’s exactly what happened. But not only did Haddish host the sketch comedy show in November 2017, she also won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2018 for her guest spot that night. 

Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling has been a powerful force in the entertainment industry throughout the past decade-and-a-half thanks to a long list of incredible shows like The Office, The Mindy Project, and Never Have I Ever. But as the decorated comedian, actress, and writer told The Daily Beast’s The Last Laugh podcast in 2019, she was close to adding Saturday Night Live to her resume:

Though Kaling was initially excited about the opportunity, she was forced to turn down the writing gig because of her contract for The Office and an agreement she made with executive producer Greg Daniels. She would call the whole situation “life-changing.”

John Goodman has hosted Saturday Night Live more than a dozen times over the years, and is one of the most prolific members of the five-times club, but he was almost a member of the show’s cast way back when. During a 2022 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the Golden Globe winner opened up about his failed audition for the show in 1980:

Obviously, Goodman wasn’t too sore about the rejection, as he’s hosted the show 13 times over the years, and has made countless cameos during that same stretch of time.

Marc Maron

Over the years, Marc Maron has gone from tenacious standup comedian to prolific podcaster with his WTF with Marc Maron podcast, and has even found a great deal of success as an actor. However, the one big what-if from his career that’s always stuck with him was his failed 1995 Saturday Night Live audition, which he has talked about time and time again on his podcast over the years.

Back in 2015, when Lorne Michaels appeared on WTF, Maron finally asked the SNL executive producer for some clarity on the situation. When Maron asked if he wasn’t a right fit for the show, Michaels explained that he was fine, it was just that the show was going through a massive transition at the time and they didn’t know how all the pieces would fit.

Kumail Nanjiani

Similar to John Mulaney and Mindy Kaling, Kumail Nanjiani was once asked to audition for Saturday Night Live to only receive an offer to join as a member of the writing staff. But unlike Mulaney, who worked as a writer for years, and Kaling, who had to turn down the offer, the Eternals star served as a member of the writing team for one week, as he told Vulture in 2012.

Nanjiani said he tried out because “you can’t not audition for SNL,” and was offered a chance to write sketches for a few weeks, but ultimately had prior engagements that prevented him from staying longer than a single show. But like a lot of people on this list, Nanjiani would go on to host SNL in 2017.

Jack McBrayer

Jack McBrayer, best known for his turn as Kenneth Parcell on 30 Rock, a show that was executive produced by none other than Lorne Michaels. But the hit comedy series wasn’t the first time McBrayer had an interaction with the SNL creator, as the actor and comedian auditioned for the sketch show years ago. During a 2014 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, McBrayer joked about his failed audition, saying:

McBrayer went on to cross his fingers and say “Wel, they never said no,” in reference to his tryout alongside his longtime friend. But hey, everything worked out for McBrayer in the end, even if no one called to break the bad news.

Donald Glover

Donald Glover would become a star with his starring role in the NBC comedy Community, but the comedian, actor, writer, and musician was almost a member of a completely different show when he auditioned for a spot on Saturday Night Live in 2008. How and why Glover didn't earn a spot still baffles a lot of people, including Glover, who made a joke of his two failed auditions when he hosted SNL in 2018 

But don't feel too bad for Glover as he went on to have great success on television, in movies, and even in the music industry under his Childish Gambino moniker. 

Aubrey Plaza

Aubrey Plaza was another future star in the making when she auditioned for a spot on Saturday Night Live in 2008. After being introduced to SNL at a very early age, Plaza told the Guardian that she always wanted to be on the show and did everything she could do in order to get there, which ultimately led to her interning on the program in 2005 and the auditioning in 2008.

And though she didn't make the cut, Plaza ended up securing a gig as one of the funniest characters on Parks And Recreation, and the rest is history. In the years following her failed audition, Plaza has become one of the funniest actresses in film and television with her absurdly awkward and dark sense of humor. And she even went on to host SNL in January 2023. 

Ellie Kemper

It seems like so many of the SNL hopefuls from the late 2000s would later go on to find success on other NBC programming, which is also the case for Ellie Kemper. Before the future star earned the starring role on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Kemper found success as a member of The Office cast. During a 2018 appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Kemper revealed that even though she hasn't spoken to Lorne Michaels since her failed 2008 audition, she doesn't hold anything against him, stating:

Though she never joined the SNL cast, Kemper finally got to stand on the stage for a brief reunion with her fellow cast from The Office when Steve Carell hosted the show in November 2018. 

Nick Kroll

Before he went on to star in The League and his own sketch comedy show, Kroll Show, and the Netflix animated series Big Mouth, comedian Nick Kroll was a member of the same auditioning class as his future collaborator John Mulaney back in 2008. During an interview on the Dan Patrick Show, Kroll revealed that he in fact had a memorable, yet extremely awkward interaction with Lorne Michaels, stating:

Kroll went on to say that everything worked out the way it should have because he ended up securing a role on The League the following year and became a comedy star shortly thereafter.

Stephen Colbert

Although not as shocking as his Saved By The Bell audition, The Late Show host Stephen Colbert also tried to join the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1996. Colbert was part of the round of auditions that would eventually lead to Tracy Morgan getting a spot on the show. Colbert joked with Morgan about his failed audition during the former 30 Rock star's 2017 appearance on The Late Show, where Morgan revealed that he didn't remember the incident, stating:

According to Colbert, he and Morgan were both part of the same callback after the first round of auditions, but he was the odd man out. Colbert, however, would go on to briefly work on SNL, where he voiced Ace on the Ambiguously Gay Duo animated segments alongside Steve Carell. Colbert would go on to become a Daily Show correspondent before landing his own show, The Colbert Report, and then taking over for David Letterman on The Late Show in 2015.

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey has gone on to host Saturday Night Live multiple times over the course of his career, but the Canadian comedian looked at earning a spot on the cast before he found great success in the 1980s. In a 2015 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lorne Michaels revealed that he wasn’t at Carrey’s audition, but someone who was there passed on the future star, saying they didn’t “think Lorne would like it.”  

Carrey would end up getting a spot on In Living Color a decade later, and was quickly catapulted into superstardom within a few years. It’s safe to say he did okay for himself despite not making the cut for SNL. 

Kevin Hart

You wouldn't think it, but Kevin Hart had probably one of the most disastrous Saturday Night Live auditions in the history of the show. Before he went on to perform sold out shows at Madison Square Garden and headlining countless hit comedy movies, Hart tried his luck at the sketch comedy show. During a 2015 appearance on Conan, Hart explained why you shouldn't do an impression of a basketball player no one knows:

Despite not making the cut for Saturday Night Live, it's safe to say Kevin Hart has had one heck of a career.

Zach Galifianakis

Years before he became a comedy superstar in The Hangover trilogy, Zach Galifianakis auditioned for Saturday Night Live, and got hired, but as a writer instead of a cast-member. During a 2019 episode of The Off Camera Show, Galifianakis explained that he didn't know at the time that he wouldn't actually be performing on the show, stating:

He would last a couple of weeks on the writing team before he moved on to other things. In the years following, the comedian has become a star in his own right and continues to provide laughs with his offbeat humor.

Paul Reubens

Paul Reubens is better known as the man-child Pee-wee Herman, but the world might not have ever gotten the oddball character if it weren't for the actor's failed Saturday Night Live audition in 1980. During the 2007 Sketch Fest (via SF Gate), Reubens revealed how hurt and outraged he was after being rejected, stating:

Reubens would go on to have a long career in the entertainment industry with his signature Pee-wee Herman character, as well as roles in movies like Blow, Batman Returns, and multiple others. 

Lisa Kudrow

Before landing a gig on Friends, Lisa Kudrow auditioned for a spot on the cast of Saturday Night Live in the early 1990s, which the show's executive producer Lorne Michaels regrets rejecting all these years later, as he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2015::

It’s hard to imagine what Friends would have been like with Kudrow’s Phoebe Buffay all those years.

Kel Mitchell

Kenan Thompson has gone on to become the longest-running cast-member of Saturday Night Live after earning a spot on the show in 2003. Thompson's old comedy partner, Kel Mitchell, wasn't as lucky as his friend and All That co-star. Mitchell auditioned at the same time as Thompson way back when, but thanks to an awkward audition, he knew it was over as he explained during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session:

In the years following his disastrous audition, Mitchel has gone on to appear on the series Game Shakers as well as an All That reunion and Dancing With The Stars.

Jordan Peele

This final entry is quite different from the rest as Jordan Peele was offered a spot on Saturday Night Live in 2008, but he had to turn it down after Fox wouldn't release the future star of Key And Peele from his MadTV contract.

Peele told the Hollywood Reporter in a 2019 interview that the incident motivated him to not only act and perform comedy but to also start producing his own projects. Over the next 10 years, Peele started the successful sketch comedy show, Key And Peele, before becoming one of the most groundbreaking minds in the horror genre with films like Get Out, Us, and Nope. 

Those are just a few of the dozens of comedians who failed to impress Lorne Michaels of senior writers of Saturday Night Live. While the long-running sketch comedy series may be a fantastic jumping off point for a comedian's career, it's clearly not the only way a talented comedian can make a name for themselves, as evidenced by so many of the successful people we mentioned above.

Those are just a few of the dozens of comedians who found success despite not joining the Saturday Night Live cast. And who knows, maybe we’ll be seeing some of them come back in the future as SNL hosts when the show makes its eventual return after suspending production due to the 2023 WGA strike. 

Dancing with the Stars is finally coming to the small screen in 2019, and ABC unveiled its lineup of stars and the professional dancers set to compete alongside them in Season 28. The announcement is still pending covering which celebs are paired with which pros, but things are about to get hyper-competitive in the ballroom. It's time for some pre-premiere guesses for how each celebrity will finish!

From The Bachelorette’s Hannah Brown to two-time NBA champion Lamar Odom, Dancing with the Stars is bringing it it Season 28! Who will take home the much-coveted mirror ball trophy when the glitter and shimmer fade? Time to make some early pre-premiere predictions about how the dance contest is going to go down, all while learning who the new contestants will be.

Sean Spicer

The former White House press secretary has been immortalized by Melissa McCarthy on Saturday Night Live. He made an unexpected appearance at the 2017 Emmy awards, and at one point, he was working to get his own talk show. Now, he is headed to Dancing with the Stars, and host Tom Bergeron has already weighed in, along with a lot of the Internet. Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol had a surprising run. Could the Conservative-minded Spicer follow suit?

How Sean Spicer Will Finish: He will likely be voted off first, meaning he would finish in last place. Barring a miracle, he could surprise with a longer run, but older, non-athletic contestants rarely last that long.

Kate Flannery

Familiar TV screen presence, Kate Flannery, memorably played the alcohol-loving Meredith in The Office. Obviously, Flannery’s dancing endurance will be better known after Dancing with the Stars’ premiere. There have been surprises in the past, such as it went on The Office, where Kate Flannery has proven her significant skills when it comes to physical comedy. Such hints of good body control could mean dance skills getting unearthed.

How Kate Flannery Will Finish: Eleventh or tenth place. She could go farther, though, if Steve Carrell's Michael Scott comes by to offer some encouragement.

Mary Wilson

Mary Wilson is a founding member of the legendary Motown group The Supremes, and is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer to boot. As one of three musicians competing in Season 28, Wilson certainly has musicality on her side. She's been a well-loved and respected star for many decades, too, so viewer votes should be enough to power her through the early days of the competition. Like her fellow competitors, a lot will depend on her skill that first week.

How Mary Wilson Will Finish: Tenth place.

Lauren Alaina

Country music star Lauren Alaina will go from singing her own songs to dancing to others' hits. Having musical timing is a must on Dancing with the Stars, and Alaina should come equipped with that right out of the gate. The American Idol runner-up has developed a devoted fan following through the years, which should also help the voting process. It is going to come down to how fancy-footed she can get in the ballroom, though.

How Lauren Alaina Will Finish: Ninth place

Lamar Odom

The two-time NBA champion and former Keeping Up with the Kardashians regular is on Dancing with the Stars’ starting lineup. Lamar Odom has overcome some significant health issues, not to mention other personal problems, to live to see the ballroom. Being healthy enough to compete is an accomplishment in and of itself, and Odom will likely have a very compelling story to share, along with the athletic determination to last in the competition.

How Lamar Odom Will Finish: Eighth, though he could go further, since long legs can be a huge help on the dance floor.

Hannah Brown

As rumored, the most recent Bachelorette star will compete in Dancing with the Stars 2019, though Hannah Brown will not be doing so with Tyler C. [Cue potential Bachelor Nation disappointment.] Can Hannah dance, though? That will be the question the very vocal star of the highly-popular Bachelorette season will have to answer on live television. Viewer votes and a decent dance performance could take her far. Remember Melissa Rycroft?

How Hannah Brown Will Finish: Seventh place or so. Bachelor Nation contestants have done well, so she could go further, but only if she doesn't give a rose to some other contestant's pro dancer.

Christie Brinkley

The supermodel and National Lampoon’s Vacation icon Christie Brinkley is a high-profile star. Fan votes and creative choreography could see Brinkley go far in this competition, too. Dancing with the Stars’ audience tends to love seeing favorites take center stage. Plus, Brinkley played Roxie Hart in Chicago on Broadway, which is a career credit that possibly bodes well for her ability to move around a stage. She could be a surprise contender!

How Christie Brinkley Will Finish: Somewhere around the middle, like sixth place

Ray Lewis

The NFL Hall of Famer could have a strong shot at the mirror ball trophy. NFL stars have a tradition of doing incredibly well on Dancing with the Stars, thanks to choreographed route-running and agility. The latest NFL star to win was Rashad Jennings in Season 24, which aired back in 2017, while three NFL stars have won overall in the series’ history. Could Ray Lewis be the fourth? Stay tuned.

How He Will Finish: Top 5. Maybe fifth place or slightly higher.

Karamo Brown

Queer Eye’s culture expert is coming to the ballroom to strut his stuff! Karamo Brown is one of the big stars of the beloved Netflix series, so you know he is going to be a fan-favorite. Brown already proved he can handle intricate choreography during the Queer Eye stars' hilarious appearance on Lip Sync Battle. He could make it well into Dancing with the Stars’ final batch of hopefuls.

How He Will Finish: No Fab Five here, because we're thinking Top Four!

James Van Der Beek

Already well-known to viewers thanks to his storied run on Dawson’s Creek and other recent work such as Pose, James Van Der Beek could be a major DWTS contender. How well can he dance? The world is about to find out. If Dancing with the Stars is his first time out, he could possibly become the season's dark horse competitor, who improves week-to-week, making it to the finals.

How He Will Finish: In the Top 3, probably placing third.

Kel Mitchell

The All That fan-favorite Kel Mitchell will compete on Dancing with the Stars, and I cannot wait to see if his dancing is as good as...well, Good Burger! Mitchell is a highly-skilled and flexible entertainer, which should prove very useful on Dancing with the Stars. All told, Mitchell should be both a fan-favorite and a considerable competitor in the 2019 season. I hope Kenan Thompson will be around to cheer his close friend on for a special episode or two!

How He Will Finish: Top 3, though Kel MItchell could win it.

Ally Brooke

As a pop star and Fifth Harmony member, Ally Brooke has dance skills to spare, so she should be one of the most highly competitive celebs out there. Brooke has a pre-existing fan-following from her years in the popular music group. Given how likely it is that she will wow Dancing with the Stars’ viewers, you can bet Brooke is a big contender for the mirror ball. Having dance skills can sometimes go either way on the show, with those who aren't able to adjust their skillsets, but it could take Brooke to the top.

How She Will Finish: Winner. It all depends on whether Ally Brooke will be punished by the judges and the audience for having previous dance experience, though. That issue has come up in the past, but if it's not a problem, she should at least be a finalist.

After a controversial Season 27, Dancing with the Stars skipped its spring installment. Ahead of the fall 2019 installment, ABC announced that there would be some changes in store. Long-time Dancing with the Stars co-host Tom Bergeron also hinted at the retooling with a “we hear you” message to fans.

It will be fun to see Dancing with the Stars back in action and with such a cast. A season of the ABC series is always eventful, so it should be exciting. Due to the unusual break between seasons, absence has certainly made the heart grow fonder. Who else is already anticipating Disney Night? Same!

The Double Dare reboot just landed two very special contestants for its upcoming season. All That alums and former sitcom co-stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are set to compete on an upcoming episode of the Nickelodeon game show. The actors, who starred on the beloved comedy Kenan & Kel together, will compete against each other in the episode.

It is pretty much a scientific fact that the Double Dare reboot just got a double dose of pure awesome. The next best thing besides a Kenan & Kel revival will be seeing the duo team up on-screen again on the hilarity-prone game show. Adding to the episode's throwback synergy is that the pair's former All That co-star Lori Beth Denberg will join Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell for the special edition episode. EW broke the news that will have many Nickelodeon fans very excited.

In the years since Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell's sitcom Kenan & Kel came to a close in 2000, the actors have remained busy and in-demand. Three years after the show ended, Thompson joined the cast of Saturday Night Live. As fans of All That probably know, the comedy sketch show was sort of Nickelodeon's answer to the NBC show. Back in 2015, Thompson and Mitchell reunited for a skit on Saturday Night Live. Mitchell currently stars on the Nickelodeon series Game Shakers.

Although both Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell have found huge success outside of their collaborative endeavors, there has always been something special about what they share together. So the opportunity to see them reteam on a stage as great as Double Dare can provide for participants is exceptionally exciting. Not to be greedy, but is there a chance the duo could reteam for a special episode of Kenan & Kel, as well? While it is a long shot, you always have to take a chance at putting it out there. You never know.

The news of Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell's guest stardom comes as the new Double Dare is about to premiere. Hosted by YouTube sensation Liz Koshy, the reboot already has fans pumped up to watch its return. Add to that, this major guest star news and you have undoubtedly fueled further eagerness over the show's return. Will it spark future talks for more reunions between the storied co-stars? Time will tell and hopes will remain high.

Nick Cannon is really trying to give some '90s kids nostalgia in an upcoming episode of his MTV show Wild 'N Out. The sketch comedy show has wrangled a sizable number of the original All That cast members for a reunion that will hopefully be just as crazy as the cast's sketches back on the classic Nickelodeon show. Former star Kel Mitchell shared a photo of the mini-reunion on Instagram, showing fans that Kenan Thompson, Lori Beth Denberg, and Josh Server will join him once again for some television comedy.

The group seen above will team up on Nick Cannon's Wild 'N Out for an upcoming Season 11 episode that'll feature sketches, clearly rehearsed rap battles, and all the other silliness that comes along with that show. Nick Cannon managed to snag up a bulk of the more memorable cast members from All That's O.G. crew, but the reunion is still three people short, with Angelique Bates, Katrina Johnson, and Alisa Reyes all absent. Amanda Bynes would've been another welcome face within this crowd; even though she wasn't there from the beginning, she joined when all these cast members were still a part of the show.

There is one other All That alum that will be appearing in the special Wild 'N Out episode, a cast member that many people may forget got his big break on the show: Nick Cannon himself. Cannon joined All That in Season 5, which was Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell's final season. Though Cannon didn't spend as much time with Mitchell and Thompson as the other castmates appearing in this episode, all three still seem pretty tight. So what's in store for this 90s-tastic episode of Wild 'N Out? That hasn't been revealed yet, but we gotta imagine there will be references to iconic All That characters like Ed from Good Burger, Super Dude, Repairman, Walter The Ear Boy, and maybe a bit of "vital information" to round the episode out. As fun as it will be to see Nick Cannon and his crew team up with the All That cast, it could've been better had they found another Nickelodeon cast from the '90s to take on the sketch stars! The obvious (?) candidates here would the hosts from Wild & Crazy Kids, because the title of that show just meshes so perfectly with Wild 'N Out, right? But even bringing in some of Nick Cannon's own former All That co-stars like Danny Tamberelli and Gabriel Iglesias could've really sent this episode over the top.

People of a certain age will know that before Kenan Thompson became the longest-serving African American cast member in Saturday Night Live history, he was simply one half of the Nickelodeon show Kenan & Kel. Seeing Kenan Thompson reunite with his Kenan & Kel co-star Kel Mitchell always gives fans a thrill, which is why this video of the pair bonding over buying Jurassic Park tickets and ordering one large popcorn with nacho cheese will make them feel all nice and gooey inside. It’s good to know that Steven Spielberg’s 1993 cinematic behemoth hasn’t just enthralled fans of all ages for around 23 years straight, but that it also brought together arguably the most popular children’s double act of the 1990s, too! Forget the fact that it’s probably the archetypal blockbuster, this is now Jurassic Park’s legacy.

Between 1996 and 2000, Kenan & Kel ran for four seasons and one TV movie, while Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell also starred in the 1997 feature film Good Burger, too. But while seeing Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell back on screen together is enough to warm even the coldest of hearts, there were some startling omissions from their reunion that it’s hard not to be peeved at. I mean, I can’t believe that Kel Mitchell doesn’t either mention or gulp down a full bottle of orange soda. While I’m also annoyed that we didn’t get to hear Kenan Thompson shout out, "Why!!!"

But just seeing them completely in sync again does suffice. OK, they’ve only reunited so that they can help to promote Fandango’s latest advert, which sees Kenan Thompson reprise his character of Miles Mouvay, but I’m willing to overlook them selling out for the pleasant wave of nostalgia.

But what’s Kel Mitchell been up to since the end of Kenan & Kel? Well, according to this advert, he’s been doing pretty well for himself. That’s because he’s now a "tech billionaire with his own private island."

Kenan Thompson hasn’t done too bad. Because not only is he a firmly established member of the Saturday Night Live roster, but as he points out in the above advert, he has his very own popcorn machine, too. However, if we're being honest, he’ll forever be Roger Rockmore’s son to me. How about to you?

It is no wonder Jimmy Fallon has the youngest-skewing audience on late night most nights. Last night, he appealed to our sense of nineties nostalgia by bringing on Saturday Night Live’s Kenan Thompson and his former partner in burger flipping, Kel Mitchell. That’s right, The Tonight Show totally reenacted an updated “Good Burger” sketch, to the delight of Nickelodeon fans everywhere. Check it out, below.

Like Thompson and Mitchell, Jimmy Fallon got his start with sketch comedy and still does it a lot on The Tonight Show. Thus, it’s not a huge surprise that the the late night host inserted himself into the sketch, giving him a hairdo that rivals manager Ed’s long locks. Sidekick Steve Higgins gets in on the fun, complaining about mustard and more to Fallon and then Ed, which prompts Ed to utter his most famous line. I probably don’t even need to list it, but just for fun’s sake, here you go:

Unfortunately, Kenan didn’t show up to play fellow Good Burger worker Dexter Reed. Instead, he signed on playing a construction worker named Lester Oaks who is “hangry.” Ed at one point mistakes a milkshake for actually physically shaking Lester.

The whole thing is silly and rambunctious, and totally appeals to a sense of nostalgia for goofy programming such as was offered on nineties programming like All That. You probably have to be in your twenties or thirties at this point to really appreciate it, but that’s totally okay.

While Kenan has been in the public eye a lot thanks to an extended stint on SNL, Kel Mitchell has mostly been out of the limelight for a while now (his SNL audition didn't go so hot), although he still has a steady career. Most recently, he’s done major voicework for the Nicktoons series Wild Grinders. He’s also the lead in a live action Nickelodeon comedy called Game Shakers, where he plays a rap superstar who starts up a gaming company with a couple of 12-year-olds. He’s stuck pretty close with his Nickelodeon family in the years since All That, but that’s not a bad gig to have, at all.

When Game Shakers went to air, creator Dan Sneider talked about the potential to reunite Kenan and Kel on the small screen, again. Obviously, Jimmy Fallon beat the Nickelodeon showrunner to the punchline, although we don’t mind one bit.

In the annals of comedic duos, you’re always going to hear about classic pairings like Laurel and Hardy, and Abbot and Costello. But kids who grew up in the 1990s were probably overly familiar with the duo of Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson, stars of the Nickelodeon sketch series All That and Kenan and Kel. While Thompson is busy bring ing the laughs as a 12-year veteran of Saturday Night Live, Mitchell just landed his newest starring gig on his old home for the Nickelodeon series Game Shakers.

The premise of this show is pretty ridiculous, but that’s par for the course where kids shows are concerned. On Game Shakers, the story centers on two 12-year-old girls who somehow start up a gaming company worth millions of dollars, and in order to keep the business afloat, they’re forced to bring in rap superstar Double G as a partner. As you probably guessed, Kel Mitchell will play Double G, and the two girls will be played by dancer Cree Cicchino and Madisyn Shipman (The Peanuts Movie). And because having things on just one medium is so 20th century, Nickelodeon is apparently releasing show-created games to the public through an app.

Game Shakers is the creation of Dan Schneider, the Head of the Class actor who went on to write for All That before creating more youth-skewing fare like The Amanda Show, What I Like About You, Drake & Josh and Sam & Cat, among others. It was the latter show that put Schneider back in touch with Mitchell, according to Variety. Schneider also shared that while nothing is set in the cards, he’d love to see Mitchell and Thompson on screen together again.

Since his days selling Good Burgers, Mitchell’s career has seemingly been filled with as many voiceover roles as onscreen parts, as he’s been heard on Clifford the Big Red Dog, Pink Panther & Pals, Motorcity and Wild Grinders. His voice was last showcased for the Cartoon Network pilot Ridin’ With Burgess.

There’s been a lot of talk regarding Saturday Night Live lately, thanks to the SNL 40 special. A lot of people have tried out for the late night sketch series over the years, and recently former Nickelodeon star Kel Mitchell, who is most known for stints on All That and in Good Burger, spoke out about his disastrous SNL audition during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session.

In the session, he explains the first sketch he did as part of his audition. Apparently, Tina Fey was on hand for his disastrous audition, and Kel knew from her response that his bit was probably a little weird.

The weirdness doesn’t end at DMX. Mitchell also mentions that he had another out- there sketch that was part of his audition, involving Michael Jackson and a dancing bit.

If you know the story behind the Saturday Night Live audition, you should already know that both Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson ended up auditioning for NBC’s weekend series. Kenan Thompson was hired to join SNL in 2003, and has shown up on the show ever since, while Kel Mitchell’s audition didn’t go so hot. The actor still seems pretty positive about the experience, however, even if it didn’t turn out in his favor. In the time since, he has kept up with acting through projects like the animated series Wild Grinders. In fact, the actor also mentions in his AMA that he has plans to return to Nickelodeon for a new project, soon.

Clearly Kel and Saturday Night Live weren’t on the same page during his audition, but the man still seems to appreciate the experience. He also does not seem to have any hard feelings over how things played out. But I like his story the most because it helps to demonstrate some of the over-the-top comedy the writers and Lorne Michaels see on a yearly basis when looking for new talent. Some of these over-the-top comedians thrive while others don’t, but it’s still interesting to see how it all comes together.
