We always talk about the sadness that comes with Saturday Night Live cast members departing the show, but the truth is every time someone leaves, it also leads to additional opportunities. The most obvious of those opportunities comes in the form of screentime, but there are also additional benefits like more access to writers, better offices and hilariously in the case of Seth Meyers, his preferred cue card holder.

Meyers was recently asked about cue card master Wally Feresten during a Q&A with the audience on his talk show. After praising Wally and calling him “the best ever,” Meyers admitted that when his longtime Weekend Update partner Amy Poehler left SNL, he was elated when he realized that meant he’d get to start using Wally for himself from that point forward. Here’s a portion of his quote...

Saying Meyers has a strong relationship with Feresten would be an understatement. The cue card writer and holder, who has been with SNL since 1990, actually now pulls double duty and works on Late Night With Seth Meyers, as well. In fact, during the same conversation with the audience, Meyers said he thinks at this point, Wally has held up the cue cards for 95% of all the words he’s ever spoken on television. Given his lengthy career, that’s a huge statement.

Meyers and Poehler tag teamed the Weekend Update desk during Seasons 32 and 33 and part of Season 34. After Poehler left the show to star in Parks & Recreation, Meyers then manned the desk by himself (with the help of Wally) until Season 39 when Cecily Strong was added. That turned into Strong and Colin Jost, which turned into Colin Jost and Michael Che, who have shared the desk for the last decade plus since Season 40.

Meyers, of course, transitioned from the Update desk to his own talk show, Late Night With Seth Meyers, that has produced more than 1,800 episodes in the years since. Feresten has been around that entire time, and he remains an active part of SNL, where he’s now one of the longest serving crew members. Meyers himself also still shows up from time to time.

As for what changes we might see at SNL before the next season, that’s still an open question. Rumors, as always, are swirling about everyone from longtime showrunner Lorne Michaels to Weekend Update hosts Jost and Che, but we likely won’t have any official word until much closer to the season. It’ll be sad to see anyone leave, but as always, it’ll just create additional opportunities for screentime and access to beloved employees like Wally.

I’ve been writing a lot about late night in recent months, what with Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers earning Trump’s ire and The Late Show getting unceremoniously canceled by CBS. However, one thing that came up when I was contemplating Stephen Colbert’s newly open schedule recently had to do with what the hours on late night TV actually entail. Thankfully, Seth Meyers has answered that question for us.

My query started because I wondered what Colbert was doing during his final days on set. Anyone who pays attention to the late night scene should already know that shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live! are a bit of a misnomer. Late night shows are taped, not live, and while they have backgrounds that give the feeling it is evening, they are worked on and taped hours earlier than they appear on our TVs. It’s a bit of bts magic that helps set the scene.

So we know the two Jimmys, Colbert, Seth Meyers and other hosts across the years work during the day, but they don’t always observe 9-5 hours. In fact, Meyers actually illuminated his late night schedule for viewers once, and it does sound like a bit of a grind, albeit a well-paying one.

Running Down How Late Night's Team Works Each Episode

At 8:30 a.m., Seth Meyers shows up at his office to start the day. That’s not as early as some, but it’s certainly a bit earlier than his former SNL cast members are waltzing into 30 Rock for their 9 a.m. pitch meetings on Mondays. By 11 scripts have been cemented and Meyers’ staff heads into his office for walk throughs on certain bits; in the Washington Post rundown of this timeline, they were working on a “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” segment.

They keep rolling through noon and 2 p.m., and then finally the late night hosts steps up onto the stage for a quick run through with the test audience. The run through at Rockefeller Plaza commences at 4:15 p.m. Jokes are tried out, new jokes are sometimes written on the fly, and Meyers’ team takes a gauge of the temperature of the room after he runs through this initial version of his monologue.

By 5 p.m. the official cue cards are put together for Late Night. Seth Meyers employs Wally Feresten and his cue card team to help out with the show. Wally’s been doing SNL for 27 years and has the whole cue card thing down to a science. If you are wondering why Meyers is still using cue cards, there is a reason.

One big pro, though, to doing Meyers’ show is that SNL really is live. It’s gonna stop and start whether or not the cards are ready or need to be changed on the fly. Late Night’s a little looser and can stop and go, per Feresten.

It’s 6:15 when curtain call happens and the former SNL star is greeting his guests. Taping ends around 7:30 p.m. (remember some adjustments are able to be made for changes or emergencies). Presumably it’s after that when Seth Meyers goes home.

Sometimes, however, that’s not true of his staff, who must respond to breaking news, and must change jokes and segments for the next day’s show on the fly. In the WP article, Meyers’ writers Sal Gentile and Amber Ruffin, for example, kept working after taping, one at home and one in the writer’s room at 30 Rock.

To be clear, these shows are producing at volume. They usually break for a bit in the summer, on holidays, and a few other times over the year, but on average the 2026 TV schedule had late night shows producing between 150-200 episodes a season over the course of around 40 out of 52 weeks. So, it's certainly a long schedule, there's no question about it, and it's no wonder this was maybe not Colbert's "dream" job when he hesitantly said yes to it.

In the U.K., talk shows like The Graham Norton Show only air once a week. In the U.S., the Late Night writers are grinding it out like this five days a week, and they are responding to whatever is going on in the world in real time. It’s a lot, and while I can’t confirm Late Night with Seth Meyers operates in exactly the same way Stephen Colbert’s show did, the point is, it’s hard work for the large crew of individuals that bring us the tapings over and over again.

Parks and Recreation may be a show that’s officially been off the air for over a decade, but that hasn’t stopped the cast from reuniting over the years and referencing their time on the show. When Aubrey Plaza did her first talk show since the public learned she’s pregnant, she ended up referencing a great scene from the beloved comedy, and I'm geeking out about it.

We learned that Aubrey Plaza is pregnant with her first child with boyfriend Christopher Abbott earlier this month. This week, the actress turned up on Late Night With Seth Meyers, where the host mentioned the pregnancy, and she responded to his comment in her classic deadpan delivery:

Oh yeah, that episode! In the finale of Parks and Recreation, April and Andy have a baby on Halloween, and Henry Winkler’s Dr. Lu Saperstein delivers it. You can check out the scene here:

You have to love how Aubrey Plaza just casually talked about Parks and Recreation unprompted. It is pretty funny that her most famous character has had a baby, and now she joked that she wants the guest star or Seth Meyers to assist her in the birth.

In the finale, April hilariously decides that she wants to wear Halloween makeup while giving birth – prompting Andy to say she looks “more beautiful” than he’s ever seen her. The whole exchange is classic Aubrey Plaza, and it’s moments like these that make me want to go to Pawnee and rewatch the whole show all over again.

Plaza was on Seth Meyers to promote a new show of hers that just dropped on the 2026 TV schedule. She co-created an adult animation TV show with her ex Joe Wengert about their cat, and it’s called Kevin. The show has a wild cast list, including Whoopi Goldberg and John Waters, and the first season is now streaming completely for those with an Amazon Prime subscription.

Being a mother-to-be reportedly came as a “beautiful surprise” to Aubrey Plaza and her partner, Christopher Abbott, per People. The actress has been dealing with the loss of her husband Jeff Baena, who died in January 2025, a few months after the couple had separated after being a couple since 2011. Along with getting ready to welcome her first child, Plaza has two animated movies on the way, The Ark and The Aardvark and Animal Friends.

Until then, I have to wonder what April and Andy’s baby is like...

When Seth Meyers made the transition from SNL head writer and “Weekend Update” extraordinaire to his own late night show, he needed a gimmick. He found it day drinking with big celebrities like Kristen Stewart and delightful imbibers like Kelly Clarkson. As it turns out though, the day drinking is not acting, and Meyers actually ends up very drunk.

So, How Much Day Drinking Happens During The Day Drinking?

During a recent Q&A, someone actually asked Seth Meyers about the day drinking, and while the window is not super long, the amount is not for the faint of heart.

He previously admitted the videos on YouTube have to be “edited for time,” so fans are really only seeing about 40% or so of the actual drinking going on. If you’ve seen him drink with Martha Stewart and more, there’s quite a bit of shots and cocktails shown, so it’s hard to imagine how much is really going into their bodies.

The one pro to day drinking? He can go to sleep right afterwards, and in fact designs his days to go home as soon as the day drinking is done. Whether or not that’s amazing for every is a little fuzzier though.

Seth Meyers’ Wife Has To Put Up With A Lot Thanks To Day Drinking

Seth Meyers sounds like he's game for the drinking, but apparently he's not really the most sturdy drinker. In fact, he sounds like a bit of a mess.

I distinctly remember another time Seth Meyers was so wasted after a bout of day drinking he ended up passing out in the hallway of his home. He’d been going hard in the paint with Rihanna (in fact he told James Corden that’s the drunkest he’d ever been), and had no regrets, until “fell asleep in the hallway” of his NY pad and his poor wife stuck a water by his head.

While he said at the time it was passive aggressive, it’s also kind of sweet, and it’s clear she has her husband’s back. however, and he also revealed she did him a solid and found a way to sober him up a bit better after these crazy drinking bouts.

So, it’s nice to know he has someone looking after him, and he's said before that over the years he's "scaled down" his drinking outside of the segments. The things we do for content, though, am I right?

Ryan Gosling thought he was joining SNL’s infamous "Five-Timers Club" during his most recent appearance. His math may have been off, but he’s no newbie at 30 Rock. In fact, he’s gone through a number of quick changes during his time on the show. How does he go from a popular sketch like “Beavis and Butthead” to another requiring a giant costume swap like “Cyclops”? It turns out, Saturday Night Live has a secret weapon.

Her name is Donna. That is, Donna Richards, the longtime costume and wardrobe department maverick on NBC’s late night sketch series. She’s dressed some big names over the years, and Ryan Gosling is among them. The actor was promoting his recent movie Project Hail Mary on Late Night With Seth Meyers when he realized Donna was also a staple on that late night series.

Seth Meyers then joked about Donna's role on the late night series he also used to star in.

Of course, he is just kidding, but I’d imagine the quick changes on SNL leave little to the imagination. In fact, I know this to be true, because Jon Hamm and Kristen Wiig both confirmed “they’re literally tearing clothes” off behind-the-scenes and everybody is seeing everybody else’s bits. Even when the quick changes don’t necessarily involve nudity, they can be brutally fast-paced. You can see the full exchange, below.

To keep the guest host in a good mood, Donna is apparently a superhuman, and brought Ryan Gosling pop tarts from her relative's bakery.

Seth Meyers seemed perplexed by this admission, leading Donna from the sidelines to sheepishly mention Ryan Gosling is the only one getting the pop tarts on the SNL set. Sorry to all of the other upcoming guest hosts and musical guests, but Ryan Gosling is definitely getting a little special treatment on the show. That will probably continue, too, because he's very close to finally landing that Five-Timers club laud. And since he's got his first big franchise movie in Starfighter (which means we're finally getting another upcoming Star Wars movie) coming up, I expect this opportunity will come sooner than later.

I hope Donna doesn't forget the pop tarts.

For now, and for the next several months, fans shouldn't expect any major shake-ups in the world of late night talk shows. (Barring any extreme 2025-esque incidents.) But when May rolls around, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will exit the 2026 TV schedule, paying off on CBS' decision to cancel Colbert's show back in July. It sounds like we’ll be seeing more good-natured camaraderie among the host and others in the interim, which is on the opposite end of the spectrum from where the format was 30-35 years ago.

As The Late Show continues to mostly win out over the competition in the ratings, Stephen Colbert will be making the jump to NBC to visit Late Night with Seth Meyers for the first time in well over a decade. Fans can expect to see the two comedy stalwarts sharing the Late Night stage on Tuesday, January 27.

Just how long ago was the last time Colbert promoted something on Seth Meyers’ show? Well, he hadn’t hosted any Late Show episodes yet, and was in fact still months away from ending his run on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report. It happened on September 2, 2014, at a point when Meyers had only been hosting the show for around six months. It’ll look a little different this time around, without Fred Armisen’s band around anymore, but should be a fun time that no doubt reflects on the challenges that 2025 brought

According to LateNighter, the schedule is set so that Stephen Colbert will travel the five blocks early on Monday to get his Late Night appearance recorded before jetting back to the Ed Sullivan Theater to get that night’s episode knocked out. The timing is largely due to Seth Meyers taping back-to-back episodes to air across the Monday and Tuesday nights.

Can you imagine back in the early ‘90s, during the height of David Letterman and Jay Leno’s late night feud, that either of them would have acquiesced to record an appearance on the other’s show? Anytime a rivalry is big enough to spark both a best-selling book AND a TV movie adaptation, it’s not a great sign. Those were cutthroat times, and even last year, Leno voiced his belief that meeting up with Letterman now would be awkward.

Obviously, none of the current crop of late night hosts have anywhere near the amount of baggage that sparked the late night wars, with Conan O’Brien being arguably the last host with a justifiable grudge due to his Tonight Show screwjob. (At least until Colbert’s cancellation, obviously.) To the point where Colbert not appearing on Meyers’ show for 12 years is more of an exception than the norm.

For instance, Stephen Colbert showed up on Jimmy Kimmel Live! back in September 2025, and also spoke at Conan O’Brien’s Mark Twain Prize ceremony months prior. He also showed up for CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live telecast with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, but that’s a different kind of late night experience.

On the flip side, Seth Meyers dropped by The Graham Norton Show in 2025, and appeared twice on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the same year, once as a guest (in May) and then as a special surprise for Colbert’s episode in September. He was a Late Show guest for the Halloween episode, but also appeared with tons of other celebs in Colbert’s first episode post-cancellation announcement. Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel guested on both The Late Show and The Late Show Pod Show in January 2026, four months after his previous appearance. (His first time making the jump to CBS for Colbert’s show was in 2015.) He’s only been on Late Night with Seth Meyers once, with that episode airing in 2024.

Also worth noting in this context, Meyers is also the only one to appear on The Tonight Show in 2025. Colbert hasn’t been on opposite Jimmy Fallon since 2015. And yet Fallon also popped up for that all-star Late Show episode in July. I bet we’ll see those two crossing paths at least once before May.

There’s no question that President Donald Trump has taken aim at late night television, while many of the hosts on late night television have thrown jabs at everything from the current administration to even those White House Ballroom changes. Surprisingly, former late night host Conan O’Brien recently explained why he feels “getting so angry” over politics while onstage can take over one’s personality and can be a dangerous game to play. This in turn, prompted Megyn Kelly to weigh in on Conan’s thoughts, but also late night TV in general.

What Did Conan O’Brien Say About ‘F–k Donald Trump’

You may have seen the headlines already. A few days ago, Conan O’Brien spoke at an event for Oxford Union where the TV and Internet personality declared it’s a bit dangerous to devote one’s entire personality to “f–k Donald Trump.”

He said it’s the job of a comedian to channel that anger into something that’s a little more thought-provoking and edgy or you are in danger of simply not being funny anymore.

Conan doesn’t feel it’s the job of a comedian to be so serious, but lots of people on the Internet are now taking his comments and weighing in, tying them to late night hosts like Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel in particular. Megyn Kelly's the latest example, and she recently spoke out on her own platform The Megyn Kelly Show.

How Megyn Kelly Feels About Late Night (And Conan O’Brien’s Opinions)

Megyn Kelly told podcaster Link Lauren that when she was watching Conan’s comments, she felt it was clear he was taking aim at the three late night hosts: Seth Meyers, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.

Jimmy Fallon largely escapes Ms. Kelly’s wrath unscathed. While he occasionally does make a Trump joke, tonally Fallon isn’t interested in getting political on his late night show outside of the occasional monologue dig. He’s better known for playing silly games with celebrities than making pointed statements, and he's been open about why The Tonight Show doesn't get political in the past.

However, Kelly went hard on her critique of some of the other late night hosts. Yet back in 2011, she actually appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and told a gracious story about being invited to the White House to meet with then President Obama and his wife Michelle.

More than a decade later, she's less civil about the late night host after he compared his viral suspension from ABC to a "near death experience." She spent another chunk of her show calling Jimmy Kimmel “this multimillionaire privileged asshole” who was “off the air” for all of “five days,” but was complaining nonetheless. This comes after she commented on his return to late night in September, saying at that time she felt that because of Kimmel's politics, he got reinstated rather than "cancelled."

This isn't the only time the host has been on a tear against Tinseltown, recently complaining about Bruce Willis and other Hollywood celebs she had negative interactions with. She said here it's become a "Trump bashing session" with the entertainment crowd, and this seems to be her way of responding.

Meanwhile, while Kelly seemed to identify Conan O'Brien as talking about late night hosts, O'Brien is a former late night host himself, and even recently gave Stephen Colbert advice about what's next after ending his show.

There’s a reason Ariana Grande has hosted SNL three times (and appeared a few other times). She’s quick-witted, she’s funny, and she has an appealing taste in sketches, as evidenced by everything from the first Domingo sketch to the recent R-rated Home Alone ending rewrite she did during her latest episode. Working the show into her busy schedule sounds rough; however, and the Wicked star recently revealed how she managed to prep for Christmas while also working on Bowen Yang’s final episode.

Signing on to be the last SNL host of the year is not for the faint of heart. The episode aired just before the Christmas holiday, and the actress said she worked way ahead to get her shopping done before she started rehearsing for the sketch comedy series.

She joked in this clip from Late Night With Seth Meyers the result of this wrapping was “well-intentioned,” and it definitely sounds like a bit of an afterthought with everything else going on. Meanwhile, her hard work at 30 Rock paid off.

I personally thought Grande’s episode was the best of the season. It was certainly the most poignant when it closed with a sketch featuring Bowen Yang as a “retiring” airport employee at his last day on the job. It was a solid closing moment for an excellent episode overall, though it sounds like there was a lot more going on with Yang's exit behind the scenes.

Not every sketch Grande has worked on has worked out, though. Like so many before her, she told Seth Meyers when she becomes “attached to a sketch that doesn’t make it” it can be “really tough.” Meyers went on to joke it’s not a “person” and they don’t “put the sketch down,” but Grande confirmed it’s still heart-wrenching to lose an SNL sketch she poured time and effort into.

However, her most memorable cut for time sketch was one she did with Taran Killam. The sketch, called “New Studio” is apparently her dad’s favorite thing she’s done on the show. It also features very longtime player Kenan Thompson and Vanessa Bayer and it’s “very niche,” as Grande politely put it.

There are lots of great "Cut For Time" sketches that fans are familiar with thanks to SNL now pushing them out in places like YouTube. Some of them the Internet even gets a little obsessed with, including this recent Jacob Elordi Pimp My Ride-themed sketch.

Listen, technically Grande has appeared on SNL five times already, and she’s well on her way to the Five-Timers Club, an elite group of celebs that have hosted at least that many times. Those numbers include Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson (who's explained why the "delirious" feeling you get on SNL is worth it) and many more a-listers, and I think Grande is well on her way to ranking among them. She may just need to learn to kill a few more darlings, first.

With Christmas just days away, many scripted and unscripted shows have taken breaks until the 2026 TV schedule takes over, with the final episodes of Stranger Things being the monster-sized exceptions. The late night is understandably also taking off for the holidays, meaning any and all of the biggest entertainment news stories happening in the next two weeks won’t be talked about by Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and Seth Meyers.

They will surely have a lot to share when each host's respective show returns in the new year. But when will that actually be? Let's run down the list of network TV staples.

When Does The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Return?

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon aired its final 2025 show on Thursday, December 18, which gave Fallon just enough time to burn off all of the Stranger Things coverage ahead of the Volume 2 and Volume 3 releases. This holiday week's installments will include reruns of previous episodes, according to Entertainment Weekly.

There doesn’t seem to be a confirmed return date as of yet. It can be expected that The Tonight Show will remain on break through at least next week, with a possible return either the first or second full week of January.

When Does Jimmy Kimmel Live! Return?

After a rough end to the year, Jimmy Kimmel is taking a much-deserved break for the holidays. Since 2023, Kimmel has taken off for the last two weeks of the year, per EW, and that trend is continuing this year. Just like with The Tonight Show, there will be reruns in place of new episodes this week and next week. His final episode of 2025 was on Thursday, where he tearfully reflected on the year, not long after ABC renewed his contract through 2027.

An exact return date has not been revealed, but it will likely arrive in early January.

When Does The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Return?

Stephen Colbert has officially taken his final holiday break before his final run of shows in 2026. These final two weeks of 2025 will consist of reruns, according to EW, with Colbert coming back in the new year to kickstart the final five months of his run before ending in May.

Celebrities and fellow late-night hosts have been speaking out about the cancellation, with Kimmel even using his platform to campaign for Colbert’s Emmy rather than his own. Additionally, Hugh Jackman did a rendition of “Sweet Caroline” to account for the devastating cancellation, and it was as perfect as ever. No return date has been given, but fans should be able to look forward to The Late Show’s return in early January.

When Does Late Night with Seth Meyers Return?

Seth Meyers is also off for the holidays, with NBC showing reruns of the late-night talk show, per EW. The break comes after President Trump called for all of late night to be canceled and after Meyers had guests such as Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter, doing a Day Drinking segment with the latter. As of yet, a return date has not been announced, but will likely be in early 2026 as well.

The past few years have seen Saturday Night Live bring in new talent, and that was very evident this year, given that massive cast shake-up. One of the cast members who remains after that slew of changes is Ashley Padilla, who joined the show during its landmark 50th season. Padilla has been steadily carving out a space for herself within SNL, and she’s arguably becoming a fan-favorite in the process. Funny enough, Padilla believed she’d lost the job after meeting with Lorne Michaels, and Seth Meyers thinks he knows why.

Anyone who’s aware of the SNL casting process likely knows that at some point, series hopefuls audition for series EP Lorne Michaels and later meet with him. That was the experience for Ashley Padilla, as she explained to Seth Meyers on Late Night (as seen on YouTube). During her appearance on the talk show, Padilla recalled being flown out to New York to audition for the NBC staple, and she eventually touched on her meeting with Michaels. After some small talk, the producer delivered a blunt piece of news:

Part of me is cringing just thinking about that awkward conversation and, after that chat, Padilla apparently went to grab a drink with other performers who met with Michaels and apparently received the same answer. However, the San Francisco native eventually received a call from a producer telling her that she’d landed the gig. So why did Michaels say what he said to her? Well, Seth Meyers shared a take on the seemingly gruff exec:

Lorne Michaels – who was supposedly almost replaced by Judd Apatow years ago – doesn’t strike me as a cold man, based on his public persona. However, I could definitely see him being uncomfortable while being voraciously hugged by a newly hired cast member. Don’t be fooled by any anecdotes, though, as Michaels does indeed seem to care about the cast members – both current and former. (Pete Davidson opened up about how Michaels has been there for him amid his personal struggles.)

So far, I’d say that Michaels’ decision to hire Ashley Padilla is working out in a big way. Padilla has excelled in sketches like “Simon and Heather” and “Surprise,” and who could forget her Weekend Update debut as Jo-Ann of Jo-Ann Fabrics? More recently, the comedian has been shining in the role of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. In short, Padilla is on her way to becoming a breakout SNL star, and I’m glad her meeting with Michaels didn’t go as badly as she assumed it would.

As of late, U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed disdain for a number of current late-night talk show hosts, including Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel. Seth Meyers has also found himself on the receiving end of POTUS’ critiques, many of which have been shared via social media. Within the last few days, Trump called out Meyers and declared that his show should be canceled. Interestingly enough, though, these gripes came after the president apparently watched an episode of the show he’d already complained about.

Meyers prefaced the discussion (which is on YouTube) by explaining that several weeks ago, President Trump expressed “displeasure” with how he “talked endlessly about electric catapults on aircraft carriers.” Trump’s latest comments were posted to Truth Social on Saturday, November 15 and once again involved catapults.

However, Meyers went on to explain that in Trump’s Saturday post, the Commander in Chief mentioned that the comments Meyers made were broadcast “last night” or more specifically, Friday, November 14. As it turns out, though, the episode that was broadcast on that particular weekday was a repeat – the episode involving the catapults. So, in other words, POTUS lashed out over the same topic after watching the exact same TV episode twice. Meyers poked fun at the president’s faux pas by making a Friends-centric analogy:

As of this writing, President Trump has responded to Seth Meyers’ take on his latest catapult-related gripes. Yet FCC chairman Brendan Carr notably screenshotted Trump’s post and shared it to X without adding any additional comment. Carr was, of course, embroiled in another situation months ago involving a different TV host.

Carr appeared on a podcast in September, during which he implied that ABC’s broadcasting license could be revoked due to on-air comments Jimmy Kimmel made in relation to the death of Charlie Kirk. The Alphabet Network ultimately suspended Kimmel’s show, with the decision coming down from Disney’s top brass. Amid the suspension, Carr, Trump and more supported the decision, while various celebrities came to Kimmel’s defense. While Kimmel was surprised by the decision, he and execs eventually engaged in discussions and, after five days, the show was reinstated.

These late-night TV-related developments have occurred as the landscape itself undergoes a major shift, one that’s even seen The Late Show with Stephen Colbert get canceled. Seth Meyers previously expressed reservations over the changes and acknowledged that his professional fate was not his own. Still, at this point, Meyers continues to conduct business as usual and provide commentary on President Trump, politics, pop culture and more.

The new documentary film John Candy: I Like Me (available with a Prime Video subscription) is clearly a labor of love for director Colin Hanks and producer Ryan Reynolds. It’s also clear from watching it how many people who worked with Candy through the years loved the man dearly. That being said, getting everybody interviewed for the new film was no easy feat, according to Ryan Reynolds.

Reynolds recently appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about the new John Candy documentary. And while he revealed that Hanks handled the bulk of the interviews with Candy’s various friends and co-stars, including Steve Martin, Martin Short, and others, he says he personally handled two of them: Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. While Reynolds may not have done as many interviews, the two he did took a lot of work.

Somehow, despite this initial interaction, and Reynolds bad answer regarding spit takes, Bill Murray did agree to be interviewed. The same thing happened with Murray’s Ghostbusters co-star Dan Aykroyd, though he had some very specific requirements.

John Candy was a special person to all his fans, but also to his friends, who clearly enjoyed talking about him. Even if some of them were hard to nail down, it was all worthwhile.

We’re in the thick of fall TV on the 2025 TV schedule, and you know what that means: Saturday Night Live is back. The show is returning for its 51st season, and you can expect to see both new and old faces, including Chloe Fineman. So, to celebrate the show’s return, she posted a clip of her and Seth Meyers discussing their NBC IDs, and she absolutely roasted the former SNL cast member.

Throwing it back to a Late Night with Seth Meyers interview from about a year ago, Fineman took to Instagram to post a clip of her and the host discussing their first days working for NBC Universal to celebrate SNL's return. This conversation mostly centered around their IDs and how young, scared and drunk (?) they looked in them:

Boom! Roasted! Now, let's break this hilarious conversation down.

First of all, it’s worth noting that both Fineman and Meyers have worked at NBC for quite some time.

The Summer of 69 actress started doing comedy in her late 20s, and she joined the show in Season 45 back in 2019. She’s been there ever since, with Season 51 marking her seventh season on the show. So, she’s a seasoned veteran now; however, as she said, on her first day at 30 Rock, she was terrified, explaining:

I imagine Season 51’s new cast members – Veronika Slowikowska, Kam Patterson, Jeremy Culhane, Tommy Brennan and Ben Marshall – were also a bit scared and maybe intimidated walking into 30 Rock for the first time. I know I would be. However, I bet they were welcomed with open arms as the wild train that is SNL set off for another season.

Now, four of the aforementioned new SNL 51 cast members are brand new, Marshall is a new addition to the cast but was a writer and part of Please Don’t Destroy before, and Fineman has been there for the better part of the 2020s. Seth Meyers has been at NBC a lot longer.

He joined SNL in 2004 during Season 30, and stuck around until Season 44. Immediately after that, in 2014, he started hosting Late Night, and he’s on his eleventh season of that show. That’s all to say, he’s worked for NBCUniversal for 21 years. To further contextualize that, he’s 51 right now, and was about 30 when his photo was taken.

Fineman roasted him for his old ID, too, and it was hilarious. Here’s their back and forth:

• Seth Meyers: Mine is like a gentleman, first of all, look how beat up mine is. That’s a guy…
• Chloe Fineman: You look like you got a DUI.
• Seth Meyers: I do. I look like I got a DUI.

I’m laughing so hard, and I can’t help but notice that Meyers does look quite different now. And that tracks, because as the host said, he was half the age he is now when that photo was taken:

Fineman went on to ask if that’s even possible, and Meyers said he thought it was. However, she said she’s lost her ID many times, and they’ve never let her redo the picture. The former Weekend Update host said that’s for the best, though, joking that “you have to remember where you came from.”

That’s hilarious! And as someone with some tragic ID photos that I’m stuck with for years, I totally get all of this. However, as Meyers said, having a bad image is kind of like a rite of passage.

They’ve really both come a long way since that first photo was taken, and it’s fun to see them joke about it, especially now. That’s because Season 51 of SNL will kick off with host Bad Bunny and musical guest Doja Cat tonight, October 4 at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC (you can also stream it with a Peacock subscription).

It’s been well documented over the last decade that Andy Samberg does not like Seth Meyers' dog Frisbee. So, when Frisbee’s death was announced, many sent their condolences to the Late Night host and wondered how her nemesis felt about this tragic news. Well, now the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star has reacted to the news, and let’s just say, he’s not dropping the bit he’s held up for years.

While promoting his project on the 2025 movie schedule, The Roses, with his co-star and fellow SNL vet Kate McKinnon, Samberg was asked for his thoughts on Frisbee’s passing. Before the actress could even get the full question out during an interview with ET, the man who has spent years making fun of this dog quipped:

McKinnon was then able to finish the question, and she asked Samberg how he felt about Frisbee’s obituaries focusing on the fact that he’s spent so long roasting her and if he had an alibi at the time of her passing. In response, the Palm Springs actor said:

Man, he really isn’t dropping this bit, is he? I guess we shouldn’t be surprised, though. Not long before Frisbee’s death, Meyers got Amy Poehler to prank Samberg into thinking his dog was dead on her podcast Good Hang. When the Parks and Rec star asked her guest if he knew that Frisbee had died, he said, “Don’t even play, because I’ll be so happy,” and then he roasted the tiny Italian Greyhound.

He also said on that podcast, which was released a little over a month before Frisbee’s passing, that he will “never back off” when it comes to hating on his friend’s pet.

Well, he kept that promise, because when McKinnon asked him why he had beef with Frisbee, he said:

Samberg followed that up by saying he obviously doesn’t want to be rude about anyone’s death. However, considering the public beef he had with this dog, which is reminiscent of Matt Damon and Jimmy Kimmel's faux hatred and Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s fake feud, this whole situation is quite funny. He joked:

Along with the comedian keeping up this bit, Seth Meyers also shared his thoughts on it. In an Instagram story about how the internet covered Frisbee’s passing, he noted that while he is “sad” about the death of this dog, he could acknowledge “that it’s very funny every headline is about how much Samberg hated her guts.” In a tweet, he also hilariously confirmed that this wasn’t a one-sided feud as he joked that the Italian Greyhound “also disliked” his former SNL colleague.

So, all around, this situation highlights how there can be humor in tragic situations. And while we’re very sad that Frisbee tragically passed, it’s hard not to laugh about how big an impact Andy Samberg’s mission to constantly troll her had, even after her death.

It's an interesting time for late night TV, as the genre is seemingly going through a number of changes. The internet was set ablaze with news of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert being cancelled, prompting plenty of responses from fans as well as support from other hosts like Jimmy Fallon. As things shake out, Donald Trump has been vocal about Colbert, and is now taking aim at Seth Meyers

Colbert has been joking about what's next after his show ends, but folks have been wondering if more late night firings might occur. While fans are sounding off about the cancellation, President Trump is taking to Truth Social to take shots at a number of the late night hosts. Case in point: the following post that criticized Seth Meyers. As he put it:

Trump taking aim at the SNL alum probably isn't all that surprising if you watch Late Night with Seth Meyers. During his presidencies Meyers and his team regularly filmed a segment called "A Closer Look", where he would criticize and poke fun at Trump and his administration. So this type of take down online was possibly a long time coming for the President, and follows suit given he previously commented on Colbert getting axed.

Of course, Meyers isn't the only one that Donald Trump is posting bout on Truth Social. In another post he also made claims about the talents of Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon, the latter of which actually hosted him on The Tonight Show. As the Apprentice host put it:

Kimmel called out CBS after Colbert's cancellation, which may be another reason why the comedian has received the ire of Trump. But overall it seems like none of the late night hosts are exempt from the President's disdain, especially since many of them use their platform to publicly criticize him.

Donald Trump seemingly pays a great deal of attention to television, particularly how he's portrayed. South Park has been throwing a ton of shade at the president, which has been getting more attention given the late night changes and rumors that networks are backing off of the President. Colbert praised South Park for its portrayal, but only time will tell if any other late night hosts end up losing their gigs.

New episodes of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert are still airing for the time being as part of the 2025 TV schedule. That series is expected to end in May of 2026.

The world of late night TV was hit with a major shakeup when CBS canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The move not only felt like it held a mirror to the current financial situation at Paramount in the midst of the Skydance merger, but also a mirror to the state of late night at large. Whether the cancellation was purely financial as CBS has claimed or politically motivated as has been rumored over the last week, other late night hosts have taken stock of the current climate for late night talk shows. Ahead of all that, though, Seth Meyers shared his thoughts on the future of late night

Meyers, who has hosted Late Night with Seth Meyers for 11 years, recently opened up about his own fears surrounding the shifting late night landscape. This conversation was had on an episode of Armchair Expert, which was recorded before The Late Show's cancellation was revealed to the public. Amid the chat, Meyers admitted that his show’s longevity fears have shifted since he first started hosting his show in 2014, and he’s recognized he has less power over his own fate than he once did:

The basic idea here is that if Late Night were to be canceled, it likely wouldn’t have anything to do with Seth Meyers' talent as a host, but rather the declining popularity of late night in general. This was seemingly the case for Colbert. The debate over the political content of the show aside, all late-night shows have seen declining viewership in recent years. Some numbers indicate Colbert’s show was losing $40 million dollars a year, which still isn’t a reflection of the show’s quality, considering Colbert led in ratings and was just nominated for an Emmy for the previous season.

While doomsday may feel like it’s on the horizon for late-night talk shows in general, Meyers has taken some solace in knowing that if his show was cancelled, he would be okay in a lot of ways. The former Saturday Night Live writer and actor explained just why that would be the case:

Outside of his late night show, Meyers has two podcasts. He has one with his brother called Family Trips with the Meyers Brothers where they talk to other celebrities about trips they took with their families growing up. He also does a podcast with The Lonely Island titled The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast, on which the group recaps digital shorts produced during their time at SNL.

Additionally, Meyers' recent stand-up special, Dad Man Walking, received a lot of buzz after becoming available with an HBO Max subscription. He also has an ongoing residency with fellow late night host John Oliver at the Beacon Theater in New York City. So, overall, even if this CBS cancellation is truly the marker of the end of a late-night era, Meyers will be fine in the long run, at least personally.

Still, this latest late-night programming shift brings into question where the medium at large will go moving forward. Will it shift primarily to podcasting, or will it turn into something more longform like David Letterman’s Netflix show? Or maybe it will become increasingly more gimmicky, like Hot Ones or Chicken Shop Date. The industry is clearly changing, but how that evolution will unfold in the long run has still yet to be seen.

Saturday Night Live has been an institution on NBC for five decades now, and Seth Meyers was around for one glorious decade+ of that run. However, if you were to ask him, joining Studio 6H was not the best time of his life; instead, it was his forties that have stood out the most so far. He didn't hesitate to share his feelings on the matter during a recent Q&A.

Amidst a recent chat with the audience, Meyers got candid about how 40 was the big turning point in his personal life and career. This was marked by the ending of his tenure on Saturday Night Live just and his switch to late night a little less than a year later, a move which was announced before he even left the late night sketch comedy series. On the home front, he married Alexi Ashe in 2013, and they had kids in 2016, 2018 and 2021.

In short, it was a big decade for the comedian who noted (via NBC Insider):

A lot of millennials --even of the celebrity variety -- are turning 40 these days and the milestone, at least for me, comes with mixed feelings and emotions. Regardless, according to Meyers, your forties are great and should be a time to look forward to and be celebrated as a whole.

This honestly squares with some comments Seth Meyers made earlier this year when he was talking to Howard Stern about SNL50. The shock jock made a comment that the former head writer was happiest on the sketch show and he disagreed, noting,

If I could have written out on paper which is more exciting: day drinking with celebrities on Late Night or working wild hours for part of the year on SNL, the sexier answer is definitely the sketch comedy series. However, there's something to be said for being more settled in your career, and I do hear Lorne Michaels can be an intimidating presence.

Meyers has said before it's also a breeding ground for insecurities, and even when he briefly came back for SNL50, he felt that tug of: "I don't belong here." Even after "ten years of reflection and personal growth" the second "one thing" went wrong, he flipped out. He's previously said he's still holding onto some stressful memories during his time on SNL, too, and he's certainly not the only famous name to speak out about fears and insecurities with being on the sketch show.

While prior to hearing the Late Night host's words, I probably would have guessed the time Meyers spent on Saturday Night Live with its new guest hosts, musical guests and creative ideas each week, would have been his best decade. But it turns out, the grass is truly greener on the other side.

One of the funniest recurring characters in SNL history to this day is Bill Hader’s Stefon, thanks to all his off-the-wall recommendations for the hottest clubs, events and destinations in New York City. To this day, Seth Meyers still gets asked about working alongside Hader when he was playing this character, because he was the one sitting next to him at the Weekend Update Desk. Now, the Late Night host has revealed his favorite moment with Stefon and why it made them both emotional.

When the SNL alum answered audience questions on his show Late Night With Seth Meyers, the host was asked to break down his favorite memory with Stefon. He started to recall a sweet moment with Hader while explaining which episode sticks out to him the most. In his words:

Meyers went on to recall a sketch called “Stefon’s Farewell,” which aired on NBC on May 18, 2013. This particular edition of Stefon, happened during Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, Jason Sudeikis and more's final episode. Meyers also noted that he knew he’d be soon transitioning to late night, and he had just half of a season left of being on the sketch show. As he continued:

This was an all-time great Stefon moment. In the hilarious bit, Seth Meyers runs off to stop a wedding between Stefon and Anderson Cooper, which was a pre-taped part of the show. So, while that was playing for the audience, here’s what was happening behind the scenes for the two SNL cast members, as Meyers recalled:

How sweet! Bill Hader was saying goodbye to a job he’d had since 2005 at that moment, and Meyers knew it was in the cards for him soon after joining back in 2001. He also said this:

One might have thought Meyers’ favorite moment would have to do with some funny instance where they broke up laughing (did you know the reason why Hader actually covered his face as Stefon was because Meyers would make him laugh?) But his favorite memory is actually super emotional. Check out the sketch below:

Ultimately, Bill Hader did return to play Stefon again, even though he has expressed some regrets about the character. And recently fans were super bummed Stefon didn’t return for SNL50. Of course, we can only hope he’ll become one of the upcoming SNL hosts, so we can see him and maybe even Stefon again.

Dakota Johnson is a fashion icon, rocking incredible looks for premieres, red carpets, and just on the street. It also feels like she has become the pioneer for sheer looks in the 2020s. The Fifty Shades of Grey star wore a completely sheer dress during a recent talk show appearance, and it's absolutely stunning.

Johnson sat down with the titular host of Late Night with Seth Meyers to chat about her new Celine Song film, Materialists, which is receiving a lot of buzz. Meyers himself dressed up for the occasion, rocking a tux to better suit the actress's look, who famously dresses to the nines when sitting down for a talk show interview. She wore a long-sleeved mid-length sheer dress with a high, criss-cross neckline. She had a bodysuit on underneath and styled the look with a classic pair of black pumps.

She also wore a see-through sequins dress to the Madame Webb premiere, which was iconic. And her sheer black SNL afterparty dress this year was one of my favorite looks of the night. This is starting to feel like her thing, and it suits her.

Johnson is obviously a stunningly gorgeous actress, but this most recent look really highlights her beauty. Yes, the sheer is incredibly sexy, but the outfit isn’t overly revealing, as the body suit allows for the focus to be on her rather than just the dress. The simple styling and the classic straight hair keep with the theme, giving a timeless look that I’ll never get tired of seeing her in.

The actress has a signature style at this point, and she is able to experiment with it without ever being boring.

We still have a lot of looks to see her in, as Materialists doesn’t open in theaters until next weekend, per the 2025 movie schedule. I wonder if she’ll stick with the sheer theme or experiment with other fashion choices, as she has in the past. The dresses she wears in her latest film are also gorgeous, so maybe she’ll do something reminiscent of her character for the premiere. Whatever she chooses to rock, I’m sure it’ll be breathtaking and will influence other fashionable stars looking to make a splash while promoting their latest work.

George Clooney’s been busy as of late, as he’s been headlining the stage production of Good Night, and Good Luck. Based on the 2005 film Clooney directed and co-wrote, the stage production sees him playing the role of revered newsman Edward R. Murrow. To play the part, the leading man had to ditch his signature, silver locks and dye his hair black. Overall, people seem to have taken to Clooney’s brunette look. Yet, as the actor’s stint on the play ends, he’s having trouble with his locks and may be forced to channel a film legend.

The 64-year-old star has long been known for his sense of humor and self-deprecating nature. He had plenty of jokes when he stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers (as seen on YouTube) to discuss the aforementioned stage play. During his appearance on the talk show, the two-time Oscar winner was wearing a cap to hide his unevenly colored hair. He went on to explain the process of having it dyed, much to the delight of Meyers and those in the audience:

Seth Meyers and George Clooney went on to joke that the latter’s “bad hair” now gives him the appearance of someone who’s trying to color their locks as part of a mid-life crisis. Clooney went on to say that by the time he attends the Tony Awards, where he’ll be vying for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play, the hairdo will be gone. What was particularly humorous, though, is that Clooney mused that he might show up to the show with a shaved head similar to that of the late Yul Brynner.

Some may chuckle over the notion of the Michael Clayton star going bald for a while, but a number of actors have certainly pulled off the look over the years. Yul Brynner is one such performer as, in time, his eventual lack of hair arguably became synonymous with his persona. It’s also hard to imagine him not having that shiny dome in films like The King and I or Anastasia. Other leading men have also shaved their heads and relished it. Dwayne Johnson even took offense when not being named World’s Sexiest Bald Man in 2022.

Even if George Clooney does shave off his locks in order to start again, I’m not sure he’d keep that look for long. The A-lister revealed in 2024 that there’s a script for Ocean’s 14, and I’d be surprised if he didn’t want to regrow his hair before playing Danny Ocean again. Plus, Clooney’s wife, Amal – who he adores – may not be so keen on the change.

Still, if the From Dusk till Dawn star did choose to go bald completely, I wouldn’t be mad at it. Plus, as Seth Meyers so astutely pointed out, Yul Brynner won a Tony years ago. So maybe that good fortune might rub off on Clooney should he choose to rock that style during this year’s show.

We’ve been living in the age of technology for years now, and with AI creeping its way into every facade of life, it stands out that some late-night hosts are still using cue cards in the year 2025. But there’s a good reason why Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and even Conan O’Brien have refused to retire cue cards in favor of teleprompters, and Saturday Night Live plays a big role in that decision.

Meyers addressed the popular question a few weeks ago during a question and answer session with one of his Late Night audiences. Via Instagram, the Weekend Update alum started off his answer by introducing the audience to Wally Feresten, the infamous cue card holder/writer, before saying:

The variety sketch show, which just celebrated its 50th anniversary, has been using cue cards since the show began. While SNL isn't without its own mistakes, rare is it ever the fault of the cue cards, which is probably why so many alumni and current cast members continue to swear by them.

It’s not just loyalty to Wally — who also works on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon — that keeps Meyers and other late-night hosts from ditching the cue cards in favor of technological advances like the teleprompter, but rather the safety net the cards provide. Meyers elaborated:

These are all very valid concerns that have caused problems for teleprompter-only productions like the 2017 Golden Globes, where the teleprompter broke on Fallon, and silence followed for several seconds until production could fix the problem. With such bad experiences stemming from teleprompters, it’s no surprise that these SNL vets rely on tried and true cue cards to get their shows done.

Of course, accidents can happen with cue cards, too, but it’s likely a much easier and quicker fix than having to wait for a teleprompter to be repaired while the cameras roll. After all, all cue card users have to worry about is human error, and a professional like Wally isn’t going to let that happen. And if something were to happen to him, well, Meyers can explain his backup plan:

All jokes aside, cue cards really do provide some comfort to those who work with them — especially when Wally is the one behind the giant cards. Next time you watch one of the late-night shows or even an upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live, keep your eyes peeled for Wally and his team of cue card holders.

As many of the TikTok commentators spoke to, this was giving major Jake Peralta energy from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and I’m howling with laughter. Samberg basically did a jump scare Weekend Update segment by running out of the interview before coming back in as a stereotypical Frenchman to make all the dick jokes about the viral pole vaulting video that had Anthony Ammarati missing out on the gold because he hit the crossbar with his crotch. Or, as Samberg’s parody put it, with his “gift”, leading him to tumble to the ground.

The Samberg and Meyers’ bit is extra funny because of how ridiculous Samberg's accent is and how excited he is to shoot off a ton of dick jokes one after the other to relive the glory days with Meyers for a moment. We sure do miss these two on Weekend Update!

How The Internet Reacted To Anthony Ammirati's Funny Pole Vaulting Snafu

Just to backtrack a bit, the Anthony Ammarati viral moment happened on August 3, leading him to miss a place in the final for the Olympic sport. If you missed out on the moment when it was happening live, here’s one reaction from Twitter at the time:

At the time of the incident, the 21-year-old pole vaulter called it a “big disappointment,” but as one pole vaulting coach told Today, the viral moment is a “very common occurrence” in the sport. Even so, it’s kind of too good not to make some light of.

Oh, it’s too funny. Hopefully Anthony Ammarati can laugh about the whole thing. It’s surely not the worst thing in the world to go viral for having a sizable bulge. The sketch is a reminder of Andy Samberg being one of the iconic guests on Weekend Update many times in the past during his time on the show from 2005 to 2012. While he’s spoken about the toll SNL took on him over the years, he clearly missed doing a bit of parody with his pal, Seth Meyers.

Seth Meyers has been a regular figure on NBC for more than a decade, starting with Saturday Night Live before he began hosting Late Night with Seth Meyers. While his hosting gig means that fans can find him cracking jokes and interviewing celebs with new episodes four nights a week, that generally means staying up past midnight to tune in. Well, he got a live hour of primetime this week, and took the chance to poke fun at how late his usual time slot is. And honestly, it made me wish that he appeared in primetime more often in the 2024 TV schedule.

In the wake of the first and possibly only debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in the race for President of the United States, Meyers hosted "Closer Look Primetime," a live and extended version of the popular (and usually pre-taped) "A Closer Look" segment that airs on Late Night. While most of the jokes were about the debate that aired the previous night, the host took the chance to gently jab at his own time slot on weeknights. Meyers joked:

The earliest late night slot on NBC is occupied on weeknights by Jimmy Fallon with The Tonight Show airing at 11:35 p.m. ET, although the network is making a cut to Fallon's show. Seth Meyers' Late Night airs last, so it truly is out of the ordinary to see him live on NBC in one of the primetime hours between 8 p.m. - 11 p.m. ET. As a fan of Meyers' usual "A Closer Look" and his interview style, I'm always happy to see the host airing a little earlier in the night, pajamas or not.

It's also not particularly surprising to see that he can still thrive performing live on television after more than a decade on Saturday Night Live, on which he served as head writer for several years. In some ways, "A Closer Look" can even be seen as a spiritual successor to SNL's "Weekend Update," now hosted by Michael Che and Colin Jost. Seth Meyers went on to comment on his early days as host of Late Night, complete with a photo of him from days gone by:

The mention of Kevin Hart is a reference to Meyers' popular "Day Drinking" segment, in which he – as you probably can guess – goes day drinking with a celebrity guest, the most recent of which was Hart. The "Day Drinking" videos generally rack up more than a million views each when posted on YouTube for fans who aren't actually staying up until 12:30 a.m. ET on weeknights.

The most popular consistent segment on Late Night is "A Closer Look," however, which digs into current events and airs three times a week as part of Seth Meyers' show. The success of the segment is undoubtedly what led to his primetime slot for "Closer Look Primetime." Scrolling through the YouTube page for Late Night, "A Closer Look" videos often reach audiences of more than 2 million viewers. Is it any wonder that NBC would bump him earlier for this one-off live special in the wake of a presidential debate?

Considering that Late Night recently had to lose staff members due to budget cuts, I'm not going to get my hopes up for primetime specials en masse from the team behind the show that usually airs past midnight. Still, the live extended version of "A Closer Look" was a fun way to fill the 10 p.m. hour, and hopefully another special is on the way before the end of the 2024 election cycle. Meyers renewed his deal with NBCUniversal through 2028 earlier this year, and established over the summer that he has no intention of replacing Lorne Michaels at SNL.

Throughout his career, Seth Meyers has spent a lot of time behind a desk interviewing everyone from A-listers on Late Night With Seth Meyers to silly Weekend Update guests on Saturday Night Live. While he’s a stellar late-night host and interviewer generally, his segment Day Drinking is special because it really gets celebrities laughing. Now, he’s revealed his favorite Day Drinking moment, and it involves a bit he did with Kristen Stewart where he thought he “fucking blew it.”

Meyers spoke about Day Drinking at length with IndieWire, and he made sure to note that Kristen Stewart was one of his “favorite” guests on the segment. He went on to recall his top moment with the actress, and while he was a bit worried at the time, in hindsight, it was hilarious, as he explained:

For some context, about halfway through the Day Drinking episode, Mayers asked Stweart to read “the dumbest lines of dialogue” they had written for her. She then went on to recite a series of goofy lines with no prior knowledge of what they’d be, and it’s hilarious. The SNL vet gave her joking notes, and as it went on, the actress kept going take after take, and even snapped at Seth when he cut her off.

Meyers continued to explain how they ended up getting Stewart on the silly segment in the first place. He said he had interviewed her once before and “dug her vibe,” then he noted that he clocked her comedic skills while working with her on Saturday Night Live. So, they reached out, and she was down, to the host’s surprise, as he said:

Kristen Stewart sure did turn out to be a great time on Day Drinking, and people loved it, as the video quickly went viral online.

While we can’t condone day drinking, there’s no denying how funny this late-night bit is. From Kelly Clarkson to Rihanna to Julia Louis-Dreyfus to Kristen Stewart, Seth Meyers and his team have taken many A-listers out for a day at the bar, and it’s always hilarious in the most unexpected ways. However, there’s no denying that the K-Stew episode was a real highlight.

Seth Meyers has been hosting Late Night for ten years, and he’s still thriving as he continues to capitalize on unique and hilarious viral bits like Day Drinking. The late-night talk show space has definitely seen its share of shake-ups over the past several years. Arguably the biggest developments have been the COVID-19 pandemic along with the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. Productions have mostly returned to normal operations since then, though at least one nightly program is dealing with behind-the-scenes changes. NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers is reportedly dealing with budget cuts and, as a result, it’s been decided that the house band will be dropped from the broadcast. With that, the show’s associate musical director is getting real about the situation. 

Eli Janney, who also serves as the keyboardist for the 8G Band, confirmed the news during a recent interview. As he explains, the band will no longer perform live on the show following the conclusion of Season 11. According to an additional source for Vulture, with whom Janney spoke, this decision is only a part of larger cutbacks being made at NBC. While speaking with the news outlet, the musician explained how he learned that the group would be cut from the broadcast and got real about how he and his colleagues are feeling: 

The 8G Band has been with Late Night since Seth Meyers took over the show in 2014. In addition to Eli Janney, the group also currently includes guitarist Seth Jabour, bassist Syd Butler and SNL alum Fred Armison – who leads it. Janney went on to say that after this “revamp,” it’s “possible” that the band could be into the studio on rare occasions. Otherwise, the band is still set to “make music for them, but we just won’t be playing it live.”

NBC has been making staff cuts at different points over the past few years now. In early 2023, the entertainment conglomerate’s main news sector, including MSNBC, eliminated a total of 75 jobs. Such decisions were allegedly met by pushback from staffers, especially given other job-related decisions made at the time, For instance, at the time, many were allegedly upset over Camille Vasquez’s hiring, as they purportedly believed it put her in the same league with journalists. (At one point, Vasquez reportedly wasn’t fitting in at the company, either). And, in January 2024, the Peacock network laid off between 50 to 100 workers, per Vulture, which indicates a shift in resources for the media entity. 

Despite the circumstances, Eli Janney is aiming to remain upbeat, as he’s taking the time to reflect on the “pretty amazing” opportunity he’s had to create music for a talk show over 10 and half years. He’s not totally sure what the future holds for the band or how the program plans to address the switch-up. However, he did tease what’s in store for the band’s final week on air: 

For those who’ve faithfully watched this era of the long-running talk show since its debut, it might seem strange not to see the 8G Band in the building. Viewers will surely want to tune in for their final week, as it could be a bittersweet few days. And, all the while, we’ll only be able to wait and see whether these budget cuts impact any other aspect of the show or fellow programs on the network.

Lorne Michaels has been busier than ever with the final episodes of Saturday Night Live's 49th Season airing last month, and the 50th Season coming to the 2024 TV schedule in the fall. However, whispers of Michael’s imminent retirement have been looming for years. One of the names mentioned as his successor is Late Night’s Seth Meyers. As speculation continues to swirl, for former "Weekend Update" host shared his funny take on whether he’ll replace the long-time SNL boss after his retirement.

The Late Night with Seth Meyers host taking over the late-night institution is a natural alignment. Meyers is an SNL veteran who left to host the late-night talk show, which is executive-produced by Michaels. So, the transition could be seamless. However, Michaels still has one more accomplishment he wants to achieve first before exiting the show. 

THR brought up the looming rumors while interviewing the TV host for Late Night's 10th anniversary. Meyers addressed the SNL impresario starting the rumors while questioning if Michaels will stick to his promise of retiring after the 50th season. After mentioning his and Tina Fey’s names as possible replacements, he threw a wrench into the mix, saying:

Meyers isn’t looking to return to Studio 8H in a leadership role anytime soon. It makes sense too, as the former SNL cast member hit his stride during the pandemic and wants to continue his show until he feels ready to move on. However, the late-night host would be a perfect fit to take over the sketch comedy. The comedian brought some levity to Lorne Michaels’ influence on SNL, saying:

Well, Lorne Michaels’ shoes might be hard to fill, even Seth Meyers doesn’t see himself taking over SNL after the head honcho calls it quits. 

New and old viewers of SNL may or may not remember he didn’t produce Seasons 6 through 10 in the 1980s, resulting in a ratings and popularity decline. So, there’s uncertainty over the show’s future when he officially retires.

If the Late Night with Seth Meyers host isn’t ready to return home, some interesting comments from Michaels are painting Tina Fey as his potential replacement. Another name circulating has been the show’s longest-running cast member Kenan Thompson. So, there are potential candidates in the running for his influential role.

The man who made The Daily Show a cultural phenomenon has returned. Jon Stewart, who left the political satire show in 2015, is now back hosting the Comedy Central show on Mondays until it nails down a permanent host. His return was welcomed with open arms, and now some of his peers are reflecting on what Jon Stewart’s Daily Show meant for their own projects. Among those peers is Seth Meyers who recently admitted to feeling indebted to the comedian due to the heavy amount of influence he had on Late Night with Seth Meyers.  

Meyers recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about Late Night as the show approaches its 10th anniversary. The talk show host reflected on how the show has evolved since its debut in 2014, and how he feels about his future behind the desk. He also doled out praise to his fellow hosts, including Jon Stewart, who the SNL vet feels set a precedent for late-night hosts that infused political satire into their shows. Speaking to this point, Meyers said:SNL alum said: 

Many have praised Jon Stewart for what he did on The Daily Show during his tenure, and the show is responsible in many ways for the careers of comedians like Stephen Colbert and John Oliver. Both have taken after Stewart with their scathing, but also very funny, commentary on politics and problems affecting our world today. Meyers has done the same, with segments like "A Closer Look," which have given the host an opportunity to take a deep dive into a particular issue and insert his own commentary. 

Meyers, as well as Oliver and Colbert, certainly have their own voices, but the Stewart influence can not be denied. 

Having Stewart return to The Daily Show reminded me of the razor-sharp wit that helped Americans process the most complex political and social issues, and his return has been met with praise. Some have expressed a desire for the show to find a permanent host, but it doesn’t seem like Comedy Central feels the need to officially replace Trevor Noah anytime soon. 

One can not deny that even in the short amount of time Stewart has been back on air, he has demonstrated why he is so beloved. Meyers is also happy to have him back, and he has seen the show since his return, saying:

Since the cancellation of The Problem with Jon Stewart on AppleTV+, it seems like the host has no reason to give up the Monday slot, so fans can look forward to seeing the host every week for a while. As for Seth Meyers, his late-night show will likely continue long past its ten-year anniversary celebration. His show remains unique, taking satirical influence from Stewart, and injecting some of the formal techniques Meyers learned from his time at SNL to make the traditional format his own. He may have been influenced by Jon Stewart, but many voices in the future will likely take their influence from Seth Meyers and his impact on the culture.

Obviously, the best talk show hosts drive the conversation, but every great host needs a great foil and that's where the sidekicks come in. Ed McMahon (The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson)

The granddaddy of all talk show sidekicks has to be Ed McMahon. For 30 years, McMahon was Johnny Carson's right-hand man on The Tonight Show. He served as the announcer, coining the famous "Heeeeeeeeere's Johnny!" intro to the show, and he also sat on the couch next to Carson's desk for the entire show, mingling with the guests and laughing at Carson's jokes. 

Paul Schaffer (The Late Show With David Letterman)

Paul Schaffer wasn't the first bandleader to be incorporated into the banter of a talk show, but he was the first to be the bandleader AND sidekick. Schaffer was first the leader and keyboard player for the "World's Most Dangerous Band" on Late Night With David Letterman on NBC, then served the same role in the CBS Orchestra when Letterman switched networks and started The Late Show With David Letterman. He was also the guy Letterman bounced jokes off nightly and was a true sidekick in all senses of the word. 

Andy Richter (Late Night With Conan O'Brien)

When Conan O'Brien took over for David Letterman on Late Night, he brought with him comedian Andy Richter. Or, more accurately, head writer Robert Smigel brought in Richter. He was an important member of the cast for the show's first seven years before departing. He would later rejoin O'Brien on his short-lived stint as host of The Tonight Show and again on Conan for TBS, from 2010 to 2021 when that show ended. 

Geoff Peterson (The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson)

By far the most unique sidekick on this list has to be Geoff Peterson. Geoff, you see, isn't a person, he's a robot. A robot that was actually designed by the late Mythbusters host, Grant Imahara. He was the sidekick on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and he was voiced by Josh Robert Thompson.

Guillermo Rodriguez (Jimmy Kimmel Live!)

Guillermo Rodriguez has to be the least likely person to become a talk show sidekick on this list. Rodriguez started as a security guard at the theater where Jimmy Kimmel Live! is filmed and by complete chance ended up as one of the most beloved people on the show as his appearances became more and more frequent and he got more and more comfortable playing bits in skits and commenting on the show's happenings. 

Questlove/The Roots (The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon)

Jimmy Fallon doesn't really have a traditional sidekick on The Tonight Show, instead, he has a whole band. Sure, Questlove is the most prominent member of the house band, The Roots, in respect to the show, but the whole band plays its part as the host's sidekicks. 

Fred Armisen (Late Night With Seth Meyers)

Seth Meyers has the ultimate sidekick in Fred Armisen on Late Night With Seth Meyers. Not only is Armisen a comedian and SNL vet along with Meyers, but he's also a great musician and as such, is both a comedic foil for Meyers AND his bandleader. 

Chuy Bravo (Chelsea Lately)

Chuy Bravo had an interesting road to fame. Unconfirmed legend has it that he fell in love with acting when the Steve Martin movie Three Amigos was filmed in his village in Mexico when he was young. While that may or may not be true, it still took Bravo years to get into the industry, but when he did, he made the most of it as the sidekick on Chelsea Lately for the show's entire run. Bravo died in 2019. 

Stephen "tWitch" Boss (The Ellen DeGeneres Show)

Stephen "tWitch" Boss tragically died by suicide in 2022 just a few months after the show that helped make him famous, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, went off the air. He was a beloved part of the series, serving as both DJ and sidekick, as well as the occasional guest host when Ellen DeGeneres was on vacation. 

John Melendez (The Tonight Show With Jay Leno)

One wouldn't think that a guy with the nickname "Stuttering John" would make for a good announcer, but John Melendez proved that wrong as the announcer and sidekick on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. In addition to traditional announcer duties, Melendez was often a part of skits and other bits on the show alongside host Jay Leno. 

Regis Philbin (The Joey Bishop Show)

It's almost impossible to imagine Regis Philbin as anything other than a host. The television legend set records in his career doing just that, but he started as Joey Bishop's sidekick on The Joey Bishop Show. Throughout the show's brief run (less than three years), Philbin played the role of the young apprentice to the Rat Pack veteran, often as the butt of Bishop's jokes about his young age (though Philbin was in his mid-30s when the show aired). 

Reggie Watts (The Late Late Show With James Corden)

Reggie Watts has the distinction of being the sidekick on not one, but two shows. First, he served as DJ/band leader on Scott Aukerman's mock talk show Comedy Bang! Bang! and left that show to do the same thing on The Late Late Show With James Cordon in 2015, where he remained until the show ended in 2023. 

Max Weinberg (Late Night With Conan O'Brien)

In 1989 Bruce Springsteen broke up his longtime group, The E Street Band, and drummer Max Weinberg was left in the wilderness. After bobbing around for a while looking for a steady gig, he landed a spot as the bandleader for Late Night With Conan O'Brien. At first, he was just that, in charge of the music, as Andy Richter was the real sidekick. When Richter left the show in 2000, Weinberg started filling that role, in addition to playing drums and leading the band.  

Hannibal Buress (The Eric Andre Show)

As sidekick on The Eric Andre Show, Hannibal Buress was unique. He was expressly disdained by the audience (on purpose) and rather than support host Eric Andre, he was often critical of Andre's performance. Like the whole show, it turned the standard talk show fare on its head and it was brilliant. 

Branford Marsalis (The Tonight Show With Jay Leno)

When Branford Marsalis landed the bandleader job on the new Tonight Show With Jay Leno he was already a world-renowned jazz star. The saxophonist served both as bandleader and sidekick, as Leno didn't have a traditional sidekick. It was that second role that Marsalis came to dislike, and it eventually led him to leave the show after just three years. 

Gene Rayburn (Tonight With Steve Allen)

Tonight with host Steve Allen, which aired in the mid-1950s, was the forerunner to NBC's Tonight Show and it set the template for pretty much all talk shows that followed. That template included announcer Gene Rayburn as a sidekick, participating in comedy skits and banter with the host. 

Steve Wilkos (The Jerry Springer Show)

Steve Wilkos is a different kind of sidekick. As head of security in the heyday of The Jerry Springer Show, Wilkos' main job was to break up the endless fights that happened between guests. He was so prominent that his role evolved into one of foil for host Jerry Springer and he eventually parlayed that into his very own talk show. 

Hugh Downs (Tonight With Jack Parr)

Hugh Downs was ubiquitous on television from the 1940s until his retirement in 1999. His first major exposure came as the announcer and sidekick to host Jack Parr on Tonight With Jack Parr, the second iteration of what would become The Tonight Show. Like other announcers in the show's history, Downs served as a comedic foil to the host. 

Steve Higgins (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon)

The most recent in the long line of announcers/sidekicks on The Tonight Show is Steve Higgins, who has been in the role since Jimmy Fallon took over as host in 2014. Like the others, he's involved in comedy sketches and banter with the host. He previously served the same role when Jimmy Fallon hosted Late Night. 

Jon Batiste (The Late Show With Stephen Colbert)

Following in the path first taken by Branford Marsalis with The Tonight Show, jazz great Jon Batiste was the bandleader and de-facto sidekick for the first seven years on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, before leaving for other career opportunities in 2022. 

"Weird Al" Yankovic (Comedy Bang! Bang!)

"Weird Al" Yankovic needs no introduction. For more than 40 years he's been a legend in the music industry, known for his hilarious parodies of hit songs. Less well-known to the general public was his brief stint as the bandleader and sidekick in the final season of Comedy Bang! Bang! where he brought his trademark surrealism to an already completely surreal show. 

Edd Hall (The Tonight Show With Jay Leno)

Like Ed McMahon before him, Edd Hall served as the announcer for The Tonight Show when Jay Leno took over for the retired Johnny Carson. While he didn't sit on the couch like McMahon, he was an important part of the show, often participating in comedic sketches and bantering with Leno during the monologue. 

Skitch Henderson (Tonight With Steve Allen)

The first bandleader in Tonight Show history was Skitch Henderson, who led the band for both the Steve Allen-headed show and later in the first few years of the Carson-led show. He wasn't as involved as a sidekick as his successors, and in what few clips that survive, didn't seem comfortable in that role. He left in 1966 to pursue a more serious career as a conductor. 

Doc Severinsen (The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson)

The Tonight Show has had a lot of bandleaders over the years, but maybe the most beloved is Doc Severinsen. Severinsen was in the band on the show from the very first iteration with Steve Allen in 1953, until Johnny Carson retired in 1992, for the last 25 years of which, he was the leader. He also assumed sidekick duties when Ed McMahon was out, or both McMahon and Carson were off and there was a guest host. 

Tom Scott (The Chevy Chase Show)

Tom Scott is an incredibly accomplished musician, having played on albums by George Harrison, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, and many more. He also has the unique distinction of being a bandleader/sidekick on two infamous talk shows by celebrities that didn't last. First, The Pat Sajak Show, and second, The Chevy Chase Show. 

Louis Cato (The Late Show With Stephen Colbert)

When Jon Batiste left The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in the summer of 2022, they wasted no time installing fellow Stay Human musician Louis Cato as the new band leader. Cato has a more traditional approach to being a bandleader and is less of a comedic sidekick as a musical one, often performing full songs with the band and with guest musicians. 

Arthur Treacher (The Merv Griffin Show)

When Merv Griffin developed The Merv Griffin Show, he chose Arthur Treacher as his sidekick, who played the part very much like Ed McMahon played it on The Tonight Show. Treacher was a show business veteran, but found his highest degree of fame sitting next to Griffin and bantering on the show. 

Kevin Eubanks (The Tonight Show With Jay Leno)

Jay never never had a traditional sidekick during his long run as host of The Tonight Show, instead, he used his bandleaders, like Kevin Eubanks, as his bantering partner. Eubanks took over from Branford Marsalis in 1995 and remained there until leaving the show in 2010, a few years before Leno retired himself.

Craig Shoemaker (The Magic Hour)

For eight magical weeks in the summer of 1998, NBA superstar Magic Johnson hosted The Magic Hour in first-run syndication. For about the first three of those weeks, his sidekick was comedian Craig Shoemaker. Shoemaker was fired after publicly calling the show "The Titanic." Turns out, he was right, and the show was canceled a few weeks later. 

Glenn Humplik (The Tom Green Show)

One of the weirdest talk shows of all time was The Tom Green Show on MTV. Host Tom Green, who was never afraid to earn an R-rating, picked his sidekick because it was his childhood friend Glenn Humplik, whose main job, it seems, was to just take abuse from Green. Sure, it was funny, but wow, it was pretty denigrating, also. 

Jimmy Vivino (Late Night With Conan O'Brien)

While Max Weinberg was the bandleader for Late Night With Conan O'Brien, he was often away later in the show's run, touring with Bruce Springsteen. On such occasions, Jimmy Vivino took over. Eventually, Weinberg left the show and Vivino took over the role Weinberg had played as the bantering partner for O'Brien. 

Norman Baker (The Wendy Williams Show)

The Wendy Williams Show was unlike anything else, mostly because of Williams' unique personality. She was mostly a one-woman show, but occasionally bantered with the show's producer Norman Baker. 

Every great host needs a great partner, so as long as there are talk shows, there will be sidekicks to joke with. 

There was a point in my life where day-drinking seemed like a good idea on occasion. Early morning soccer games turned into boozy brunches, or pre-gaming before a football game could be an acceptable or normal activity. But like many other millennials those days are past, though I’m OK with longtime-SNL star Seth Meyers and Kelly Clarkson seemingly having the best time while indulging in this cold weather. 

A short while back the daytime host and the late night host took a break from their regular TV schedule tapings in order to participate in some light – OK more like heavy – day drinking. Both Clarkson and Meyers seemed to have a really fun time in the endeavor, and you can check out the full video below. 

My day-drinking days may be over, but I can still enjoy celebs cutting loose and having a blast. But what do you need for a successful day-drinking endeavor? A roaring fire? Check. Cocktails with funny names? Check. (Seth Meyers created one called the Simon Cowell nodding at the singer’s American Ido past;  Clarkson and Simon Cowell are pals in real life.) Word games with f-bombs? Check. Screaming "I loved the movie From Justin To Kelly"  from the rooftops -- literally? Check. 

Also as a sidebar--you should really know Clarkson hated working on From Justin to Kelly. She even once half-joked to her nanny she would "fire" her over her love of the Justin Guarini movie. 

Meanwhile, in case you wondered, Seth Meyers does actually get drunk during his day drinking sessions, so it’s not fake-for-the-cameras stuff. He told James Corden before he retired: 

 In fact, while Martha Stewart may still be my day-drinking fave, he once admitted the drunkest he got was with Rihanna in a session that included taking shots out of chocolate bunnies and trying to force out a nickname. That delightful montage has also lived on on the interwebs for years, and still crops up occasionally, but if you missed it...

Meyers also once mentioned to Corden that during the drunk-with-Rihanna session he got a little too schwasty-faced and ended up passing out in the hallway of his home. His wife "passive aggressively" put a glass of water by his face before going to bed, so sometimes these shenanigans get a little out of hand. But for the most part, they make for great TV. So I'd assume as long as Meyers can keep up, the segments will be an occasional part of his repertoire. 

Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost is used to being the butt of jokes via Weekend Update co-anchor Michael Che. However, things were taken up a notch earlier this year when Jost went viral over his out-of-body red-carpet experience with his movie star wife Scarlett Johansson. After becoming a viral meme, Late Night’s Seth Meyers made my day by roasting his former co-worker over the viral TikTok moment.

The whole scenario played out on Late Night with Seth Meyers as Jost was the guest to promote SNL. During the segment, the late-night talk show host questioned the Weekend Update co-anchor about the 2023 American Museum of Natural History gala. He prepared Jost to defend himself before queuing the viral clip. Watch the two comedians trade witty banter on the late-night show’s TikTok account below.

Of course, being former SNL cohorts, Meyers couldn’t help but make a playful jab at Jost’s expense. The Late Night host gave his take on the viral red-carpet moment, saying:

Seth Meyers was only saying what fans were thinking. Johansson seemed as puzzled in the clip as viewers likely were upon seeing it. Colin Jost’s body was on the red carpet, but his mind was somewhere else. Of course, the bewildered look on his face led to online chatter about the circumstances surrounding his blank expression. The SNL star hinted that online speculation might’ve been true in his defense against Meyers’ roast, stating:

The Weekend Update co-anchor seemingly confirmed the claims funnily. He gave viewers a peek into what might’ve happened during the onslaught of camera flashes. 

Of course, Meyers couldn’t let Jost have the last laugh. He jokingly compared his friend's deer-caught-in-headlights moment to asking him about finishing an SNL cold open. Seeing the two former co-workers playing up the viral moment for laughs made me giggle. You know the two men have a friendship that goes beyond Studio 8H, and because of that the short clip wasn’t enough for me as I wanted the moment to go on for a few more minutes. I think Meyers had a couple more quips in the chamber.

Late-night television is finally back following a five-month-long hiatus due to the 2023 WGA writers strike. The end of the strike allowed hosts to quickly return to their posts and resume production with their respective staffs, except Gutfeld! which had already been in production. They all seem relieved to be back, expressing such feelings during their respective monologues. While they may all be excited to be back, no one was apparently happier than Seth Meyers’ 7-year-old, as, during his first show back, the host shared a hilarious story about being home all the time amid the strike. 

In his monologue on Monday, the Late Night with Seth Meyers host acknowledged his writers’ strength on the picket lines, as they sought a new contract with the studios. Meyers also thanked his staff for their patience throughout the hiatus. And of course, he shouted out his family for putting up with him during the work stoppage, as he was spending an inordinate amount of time at home. Fans may love his hilarious takes on pop culture and politics and seek out his point of view, but his kids are very much disinterested in what he has to say. Meyers joked: 

It’s understandable that the kid wouldn't care about his dear old dad's razor-sharp takes on the political landscape or the major players at the center of it. However, one would think a number of viewers missed the host's takes. During the late-night hiatus, there were several major news stories that occurred and weren't subject to commentary or scathing remarks from those who deliver them best. I think I speak for everyone when I say it's so good to see Seth Meyers back at 30 Rock and on our TV screens. Also, his kids would probably agree it was very much time for their dad to get back to work. You can see the entirety of his monologue below:

The late-night hosts did collectively try to satisfy audiences' cravings for entertainment. John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers united for a podcast called Strike Force Five and used the revenue to help their crews out during the work stoppage. (Not included was James Corden, as his late night show ended before the strike.) The five stars chatted about their shared experiences as hosts and even interviewed guests, like Jon Stewart and David Letterman. The podcast is coming to an end now that they're all back to hosting their respective shows again. All in all, the series was endlessly enjoyable and some also seemed to appreciate that it spread awareness about those affected most by the strike. 

At present, the Late Night host seems more than ready to get back to the old grind. His commentary is much needed, especially considering the social and political backdrop. And of course, it'll also just be fun to see him chopping it up with cool guests again. His 7-year-old may not be the best audience for his jokes or notes on current events, but his regular viewers sure are.

Back in late 2007 and early 2008, Hollywood writers went on strike for 100 days, and it sent numerous ripples throughout the industry. Loads of movies, many of which are now widely disliked, were rushed into production like Quantum of Solace, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Terminator Salvation. Additionally, network TV shows like Heroes halted production, and in lieu of paying writers, a bigger pivot to reality programming occurred. Hollywood lost over $2 billion as a result of the three-month strike. With the 2023 Writers Strike here, which has over 11,000 members of the WGA demanding fair pay, alongside the SAG-AFTRA strike, Hollywood has virtually been at a stand still.

Across nearly 150 days of the WGA writers strike, tons of productions of series and movies have been halted and changed. As the major Hollywood event has reached its conclusion, here’s a timeline of everything we know about it, including what the recent negotiations means for the actors who remain on the picket line.

The Origins Of The 2023 WGA Writers Strike 

Fears of a writers strike had been looming over Hollywood since early this year, with the Writers Guild of America’s three-year contract set to expire on May 1. When the U.S. union met in February 2023, they voted on a “pattern of demands” regarding a standardized compensation for writers. Ninety-eight percent of members approved of it back in early March, per Variety. Negotiations then began on March 20 and concluded on May 1, without an agreement. 

The main issues of the WGA writers strike come down to a few key issues. For one, with the prominence of streaming services in this day and age, there's been a change to the model in which writers get paid for writing scripts for its content. With streaming services often not being transparent about streaming numbers, for example, writers are left in the dark, especially when it comes negotiating for higher residuals. Another big issue is the increasing prevalence of AI-produced scripts, and how that add to the industry might affect writer wages. The other two main issues (via Washington Post) has to do with the size of writers' room on TV shows and the length of time in which they can be employed for any one project. 

The Writers Guild of America Call A Strike 

On the evening of May 1, the WGA announced that it had voted “unanimously” to call a strike effective 12:01 AM, Tuesday May 2, per Twitter. Throughout the day on Tuesday, writers took their picket signs to studio buildings like Sony, Paramount, Warner Bros and more. Among the attendees were loads of TV writers, but even actors like Rob Lowe and Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein came out to support Hollywood writers. 

Late Night Shows And Saturday Night Live Go Dark 

Amidst announcements on Tuesday of the 2023 Writers Strike, the first major affected aspect of television to fall was the late night sector. It was announced that network shows including The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, among others, would not be in operation this first week with support from its hosts, and they instead would air reruns. Though, one talk show host will push on: Fox News' Greg Gutfeld. It was later reported that late-night hosts like Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon will pay their staff personally out of pocket along with NBC additionally offering two weeks of pay, per Business Insider. 

Additionally, Pete Davidson’s upcoming hosting debut on Saturday Night Live after saying farewell to the show last year was set to happen this weekend, but it has been cancelled as well. NBC said the show would “air repeats until further notice.” 

Mayim Bialik Steps Away From Jeopardy! But The Show Goes On 

Jeopardy! host Mayim Bialik decided to step away from her hosting duties on the game show as the writers strike continues, per Deadline. The report also said that Ken Jennings would take her place and the series would continue filming in May. Since resuming his hosting duties, Jenning is now reportedly facing pressure to step away from his hosting duties as of mid-July. 

Scripted Network TV And Streaming Shows Currently In Production Paused 

Since the writers strike was called, tons of major shows are already being affected by the 2023 Writers Strike as well. Here's an updated list of TV shows that have reportedly been paused due to the strike. 

• Night Court: The NBC series also reportedly gone dark for now on Tuesday, per Deadline. 
• Abbott Elementary: Writer Brittani Nichols shared that the ABC writers room is currently closed as well. If the strike continues, both of these network shows’ tight schedules and episode content could be gravely affected by the strike. 
• Cobra Kai: Creator Jon Hurwitz updated fans that there were “no writers on set” amidst the strike as the Netflix series films Season 6. 
• Yellowjackets: The co-creator of the Showtime series has also shared that one day into Season 3’s production, amidst our many questions about what’s next for the show, its writers room closed too.
• Unstable: Season 2 of Netflix comedy series starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe has seen a shut down in production, per Deadline, after six of eight scripts were written and production was set to begin later this spring. But, not every series is being affected by the strike. HBO's House of Dragon for example isn't shutting down Season 2 production because all the scripts have already been written. 
• Severance: Per Deadline, the second season of Severance has also shut down production in New York due to the strike. 
• Big Mouth: The Netflix animated series was six weeks into writing, but has not paused this process.
• Andor: The Disney+ hit Star Wars series has reportedly ceased all "writing-related work" of production after previously filming in the U.K, per its showrunner Tony Gilroy. 
• Stranger Things: The Duffer Bros shared that the final season of the Netflix series would not get to filming until the strike is over, thus delaying Season 5 of Stranger Things. As the creators shared, "writing does not stop when filming begins.
• Daredevil: Born Again: The upcoming Marvel series that will see Charlie Cox back as Daredevil has reportedly stalled filming two months into production due to the writers strike as well.
• A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Games of Thrones prequel series has closed its writers room for the “duration” of the strike according to George R.R. Martin, per Deadline. 
• Billions: The Showtime series has shut down for the second time, and has no resume date for the time being.  
• The Last of Us: Variety has reported that Season 2 for the HBO hit series has been put on hold as well after the casting team was asking actors to read sides directly from the game as they wait for scripts. 
• Pretty Little Liars: Summer School: An upcoming Pretty Little Liars spinoff has shut down production in New York. 
• Power Book II: Ghost Book: The first spinoff in Starz Powerverse has also paused filming, per Deadline. 
• P-Valley: The third season of the Starz series halted production in Atlanta and will continue to do so until the strike is over.
• The Penguin: The Max The Batman spinoff, The Penguin, officially paused filming on June 14 due to the writers strike and will reportedly halt production until the strike ends. 
• Duster: The J.J. Abrams period drama has shut down production until the writers strike is over. 
• The Really Loud House: This Nickelodeon series shut down production due to picketing. 
• Hacks: Season 3 of the Max series halted due to the strike as well. 
• The Old Man: Season 2 of the Jeff Bridges FX series completed filming through episode 204 before suspending production on May 22. 
• Etoile: Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’s Amy Sherman-Palladino has been in production on a ballet drama called Etoile. Though, it’s currently shut down production until the writers strike is over. 
• Zero Day: A Netflix series starring and executive produced by Robert De Niro has also paused production due to the writers strike. 

But, not every series was affected by the strike. HBO's House of Dragon for example didn’t shut down Season 2 production because all the scripts have already been written and can continue filming during the SAF-AFTRA strike. Additionally, Amazon's Rings of Power pushed through filming, but without its showrunners on set, per Variety and reportedly wrapped Season 2 right before the actors strike. 

Economic Toll Reported From Writers Strike

With the writers' strike going on for two months, the economic toll on Hollywood became evident, especially for small business owners who do everything from catering on film sets, florists, prop people, equipment rentals and costumers. Per the WGA (via the National Review) the strike may have cost the local economy $30 million a day. 

Actors Join Picket Line With SAG-AFTRA Strike

On June 27, over 300 actors including the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Kevin Bacon, Amy Schumer and more signed a letter to SAG-AFTRA sharing that they are “prepared to strike” if negotiations regarding their new film and TV contract are not met to their expectations after June 30 expiration. Depending on how things go, an upcoming actor strike could impact the WGA strike as actors band with writers on the picket line. The letter (via Deadline) said “this is not a moment to meet in the middle” as it pushed for the “change we need” and “protections we deserve.” 

Then on Friday, July 14 the SAG-AFTRA actors strike went into effect after the union’s own negotiations with movie studios did in fact not meet their expectations. With actors on the picket line too, even more productions were halted, which in solidarity with writers put more pressure on the industry to meet demands. With the SAG-AFTRA strike in effect, actors cannot promote their upcoming movies and series, one example being the Blue Beetle movie, which Xolo Maridueña spoke out about just before the strike. 

The WGA Strike Passes One Hundred Days Without A Deal 

As mentioned at the top of this article, the 2007-2008 WGA strike of its kind lasted 100 days before it concluded and writers put away their picket signs to get back to work. However, on August 9, the strike reached its 100th day without an end to the protest in sight. The milestone occurred just a few days after WGA reps met with studios without a deal. Per Deadline, studios were “willing to increase” its offers on a few writer-specific TV minimums along with having discussions that would factor in AI, but “did not indicate willingness to address screenwriter issues” and so forth on the union’s list of demands. 

Hollywood Strikes Change Major 2023 Movie Release Dates

With the summer season coming to a close and the WGA remaining on the picket line since May and SAG-AFTRA since mid-July, additional major ramifications then took place in Hollywood. Between July and August, some major fall 2023 movie releases were moved in addition to the fall TV season being shaken and tons of TV and movie productions at a halt. Among the big movies that moved out of 2023 are Sony’s Kraven the Hunter and the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel. Also, Dune: Part Two was pulled from the November calendar along with another Zendaya movie called Challengers. 

Between major 2024 releases like Deadpool 3, Gladiator 2, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and so forth not getting the opportunity to move through production, more changes to release date schedules for more movies and TV shows remain imminent. 

Drew Barrymore Gets In Hot Water Over Returning To Talk Show

The host of The Drew Barrymore Show made the decision her talk show would return on September 18 in compliance with WGA guidelines and without writers, and it rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Barrymore made the choice to keep her staff at work and was backed by SAG-AFTRA to do so, however the WGA along with various writers and actors were not happy with her decision. Following the backlash, Barrymore decided to then pause the premiere until the strikes reach a conclusion. 

The WGA Reach An Agreement, Ending The 148-Day Writers Strike 

On September 24, it was announced that the WGA and the majors studios and streamers had agreed to a tentative agreement that would end the over four-month-long writers strike. Per Variety, the agreement was made between the WGA and the AMPTP after five days in a row of negotiations between the two parties. The WGA’s negotiating committee shared that they feel “this deal is exceptional” and includes “meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership.” 

Then on September 26, it was reported that the WGA officially voted to conclude the strike after 148 days, taking effect on 12:01 am PT Wednesday. Per The Hollywood Reporter, 11,500 members have been officially authorized to return to work. 

Late Night Shows Could Be Among The First Shows To Return

In light of a tentative deal being reached, it was reported that late night shows hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers could be among the first shows to return in early October. Since they don’t star actors, the chat shows could see writers return to their jobs and the hosts perhaps interviewing non-actors like athletes, politicians, authors and musicians for example in the interim. Other productions like The Drew Barrymore Show and The Jennifer Hudson Show could also come back rather soon. 

SAG-AFTRA Strike And Impending Video Game Performers Strike Remain 

Even with a deal on the horizon for the WGA, that doesn’t mean it's the end of the road for movie studios and negotiations. The SAG-AFTRA strike remains in effect until studios can reach their own deal with the actors union. Additionally, now performers who work on video games are also raising their voices about their own rights as well and are prepared to strike as well, per Reuters.

Seth Meyers has been a staple in TV comedy since the early 2000s and, as such, he has held the record for hosting the most Weekend Update shows on Saturday Night Live. Recently, though, his friend and colleague Colin Jost, has been putting in the work and one-upped his record as the anchor of the segment. In response, Meyers shared some pretty conflicted (and hilarious) thoughts on the SNL host, it would seem.

Once a major part of SNL as a former cast member and then head writer, the TV personality has moved on from the long-running sketch comedy show to host his own talk show, Late Night With Seth Meyers. Colin Jost took over his role on Weekend Update upon his leave and notched that impressive record last weekend. Seth Meyers congratulated in the “Corrections” segment of his show, he had some kind words for Jost, saying:

Pretty nice, right? Not bitter at all. Well, except for the fact that there's a slight tone shift as the host goes on and talks more about his buddy reaching the milestone and the fact that he’s totally moved on... right? In classic fashion, he puts on a little show about how he just might hold a little grudge about the record being broken. Here’s what the comedic TV presenter says, exactly:

It’s kind of hard to tell just by reading the transcripts, but he gets more and more (humorously) aggressive about trying to convince himself he’s totally cool with Colin Jost surpassing his SNL record. You don’t have to just read the quotes, though, as you can check out the actual video clip below:

I guess that’s just the risk you take when you abandon your Saturday Night Live post, Seth Meyers. Just kidding, of course, it's very likely there's no real hard feelings between the two. And to his credit, Meyers has had a successful run at his new hosting job so far. You can catch Colin Jost on SNL Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Meyers weeknights at 12:35 a.m. on the same network.

NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers has been one of the late-night shows to truly shine during the pandemic. The recurring sketches and pointed satirical jokes have pushed the show in a fresh direction, but there’s been one missing element – a studio audience. That doesn’t seem to bother host Seth Meyers that much, though, and he recently revealed the silver lining to not having a live in-studio audience for the late-night staple.

It's been interesting to see Seth Meyers and NBC’s Late Night have risen to the occasion in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, as having no in-studio audience has pushed the late-night series past the traditional format. Despite the lack of a live audience, Meyers can actually see a benefit in the fact that he can now cater to a different, yet important, audience:

Without a studio audience, Seth Meyers and Late Night have become funnier and more irreverent with the segments and commentary. The host does seem more engaged with the home viewers while playing into his sensibilities. Catering to television viewers has seemingly worked for the NBC late-night series and Meyer’s brand of humor. But not having a studio audience has done more than improving Meyer’s connection with home viewers.

Since moving on without a live audience, Late Night has become more serialized, compared to late-night companion The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Recurring segments and skits have brought Seth Meyers closer to his Saturday Night Live roots. When speaking on the late-night staple’s current format, Meyers further explained to Collider:

Meyers' perspective on home viewers has paid off in more creative ways, as he explained. In the interview, The Late Night host stated his belief that the NBC late-night talk show is at its peak right now. Seth Meyers admitted the current format is the series’ “purest version,” as he and his crew feel empowered to find new ways to be funny for home audiences. Late-night talk show fans would likely agree that this break from tradition has given Late Night an unexpected edge compared to other late-night talk shows.

While The Tonight Show and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert saw ratings boost from the returns of their live audiences, Late Night doesn’t seem to be in a rush for a full audience yet. We'll be watching to see how the show continues to do as time goes on. Everyone runs the risk of facing dangers when they’re out and about and, sadly, one of the everyday challenges people face is the risk of being mugged. And this same risk also extends to celebrities, many of which have had their own unfortunate encounters with someone who’s stolen from them. Stars like Supernatural alum Misha Collins and rapper 2 Chainz can attest to this. You can also count The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon in this group, as he recently recalled being mugged while wearing a silver jacket in the early hours of the morning.

Jimmy Fallon remembered that early in his career, Hugo Boss sent him the “metal silver” attire and how he decided to go out to a bar in New York around 3 a.m. This would ultimately lead to a very interesting encounter with a group of guys who attempted to swipe the jacket:

So everything turned out relatively fine… I guess? Jimmy Fallon’s story on Late Night with Seth Meyers is far from your typical mugging situation. In most cases, the persons seeking to steal the items don’t typically back off. However, it would appear that Fallon’s somewhat unconventional reaction turned them off.

Regardless of why they decided not to take the jacket, it’s good to hear Jimmy Fallon wasn’t harmed during the ordeal. And most would probably agree with Fallon’s decision not to wear the jacket again, at least, unless it was truly safe to do so.

Many people know there’s a real chance they can be mugged or robbed whenever they leave the house, and many celebrities, despite their star status, are fully aware as well. In fact, Jamie Foxx is so cognizant of it that he’s even offered advice to people on how to avoid being robbed. His suggestion is to avoid posting on social media about your location and the things you own. While he presented this bit of wisdom in a somewhat hilarious fashion, it’s definitely keen advice for anyone to follow.

Aside from deciding not to wear the jacket again, one would assume that Jimmy Fallon has found other ways to avoid being mugged. Because honestly, not everyone is going to be like the muggers he encountered.

It's no secret by now that former Saturday Night Live cast members and writers have a tendency to continue working together, at least on occasion, after their time on the long-running sketch series is over. A lot of movies and TV shows have come to fruition with such post-SNL pairings, and now fans will be treated to yet another one, as Late Night with Seth Meyers has just welcomed comedian John Mulaney into the fold, for his new job as a staff writer. And, it promises to be a perfect pairing.

As SNL fans might already know, John Mulaney and Seth Meyers' time on the show overlapped for four years, while Mulaney was a part of the writing staff between 2008 and 2012. They must have enjoyed working together, because Late Night's showrunner, Mike Shoemaker, announced on Twitter this week that Mulaney had officially come aboard to join the writing staff. According to Shoemaker, Mulaney "likes to work," and took on the new gig despite having several other commitments already on his professional plate.

John Mulaney has been quite busy since leaving SNL, where he won an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics in 2011 along with Justin Timberlake, Katreese Barnes, and Meyers for writing Timberlake's show opening monologue into a catchy tune. Aside from touring as a comedian, Mulaney has also released several stand up specials (winning another Emmy in 2018, this time for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special, for Kid Gorgeous at Radio City), and written for shows like Maya & Marty, Documentary Now!, Oh, Hello on Broadway, and his one-season Fox sitcom, Mulaney.

He's also working on two sequels for his 2019 children's variety special, John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch, and gearing up for the Season 4 release of Netflix's animated series Big Mouth, for which he provides one of the lead voices. In addition to all of that, John Mulaney has acted in series such as Kroll Show, Difficult People, Crashing, Dickinson, and The Jim Gaffigan Show. That's along with returning to SNL to host four times in recent years, famously lending his voice to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and appearing in the upcoming family film Cinderella.

Looking at all of the projects John Mulaney has managed to pack into his schedule since leaving Saturday Night Live, I can actually see why Seth Meyers and the team at Late Night would want him around as a staff writer. The man clearly knows his way around comedy, and talk shows such as the one Meyers heads up have been dealing with some difficult times in which to bring the funny, especially seeing as how they haven't had the energy of a live audience to help them out in several months. 

In fact, you can take a look at his first official sketch as a Late Night staff writer, which goes into some truly weird territory:

Betty White is basically a national treasure, and when she says she’s not going to do something, people tend to listen. SNL writer Mike O’Brien learned that the hard way, however, when Betty White was the host on the show back in 2010 – O’Brien’s first year writing for Saturday Night Live in fact – and she rejected a unicorn-based sketch for a pretty amusing reason.

But first, let’s set the stage at 30 Rock. Basically, Mike O’Brien had what he felt was a pretty rock solid pitch for Betty White’s big SNL episode. The sketch would have had Betty White playing a unicorn veterinarian, but ultimately never made it to the air for a pretty funny reason, as Mike O’Brien recently recounted to late night host Seth Meyers. After going well in rehearsal, it was White’s manager who broke the news.

Mike O’Brien previously talked on Late Night with Seth Meyers about what this sketch was supposed to entail. It would have starred Betty White as a unicorn veterinarian who was caught on a bad day, having to tell a group of little girls that some unicorns were going to have to be euthanized thanks to eye infections.

Apparently, Betty White was not having the unicorn euthanization sketch, which is unfortunate because Seth Meyers, Jason Sudeikis and Mike O’Brien all recounted that it just killed in rehearsals. O’Brien was a little bummed. He’s said in the past the first season was difficult for him and that the unicorn sketch was one of the more obviously funny pieces he’d written all year. Yet, during the 2020 Late Night with Seth Meyers exchange, he admitted that trying to reason with Betty White’s manager was impossible.

Although she didn’t say yes to the seemingly hilarious unicorn sketch, Betty White did have a few memorable sketches as part of her SNL episode, including a “Scared Straight” sketch with Kenan Thompson and another about a censor taker. So, the episode still went pretty well, even though no stuffed unicorns were harmed in the making of the episode. Not bad, considering Betty White was nervous to do the episode to begin with.

Later, this sketch briefly lived on through Will Ferrell and Jason Sudeikis in a bit that Mike O’Brien says went “medium” in rehearsal. Now, Second Chance Theater has taken it on with Sudeikis and O’Brien tackling the sketch. You can see the bit below and try to imagine it with Betty White in the role. Maybe if you squint a little.

These days the Saturday Night Live alums are no longer on the show, though Jason Sudeikis had been popping on to play Joe Biden last season. After exiting, Mike O’Brien went on to create A.P. Bio for NBC. Of course, Seth Meyers is still doing his thing on late night. You can catch new episodes of The Late Show with Seth Meyers on weeknights at 12:35 a.m. ET, only on NBC.

Many things have changed quite a lot in just a few weeks, and this includes the look and feel of the late night television landscape. After forgoing audiences for a few episodes and then taking a break from full shows, our current crop of late night talk show hosts returned to the airwaves in force earlier this week. But, they have to do the same thing the rest of us are doing, so Trevor Noah, Jimmy Fallon, Samantha Bee, et al. are mostly working form the confines of their homes. This, in turn, has led to what one late night producer calls "super janky" techniques to get shows done and on the air.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and the many other late night shows which are now filming shows from their hosts' homes have had to go through many other changes beside recording celebrity interviews over video chat and trying to figure out the best area of a house to turn into a de facto TV studio, only to have Martha Stewart be salty about their design choices.

The creatives behind these shows are also working from home, and according to what Daily Show With Trevor Noah executive producer Jen Flanz told The Hollywood Reporter, it's meant using some out of the box techniques to get everything done on time.

Wow. That does sound like a janky work situation, right? And you thought you had problems these past couple of weeks having to video chat Barb in accounting every time you need approval on an invoice. Of course you're tired of seeing her cat's butt on your screen every few hours, but at least you're not trying to put together a whole TV show that way. You'd never get the sight of that fluffy butthole out of your head if that were the case. The nightmares...

The new work from home normal has been difficult on a lot of people, but when you're dealing with graphics and other large files that can't just be transferred from one office to another over a strong business internet connection, it makes assembling a completed late night show even harder. Luckily, the shows are trying to accept the current situation and even use it to help make these new "janky" shows connect with audiences. Gavin Purcell, showrunner of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon noted:

Everyone is working to make the best of things so that they can continue to bring some levity to the millions who feel trapped at home right now. For Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, this includes finding a work-around to the way things have been done over the past couple of weeks. About those ideas, executive producer Alison Camillo said:

I'm sure we all look forward to whatever new ideas these folks come up with, but, to be blunt, it's just really nice to have even the tiniest bit of normalcy back in daily life, so just having all these shows back on air, janky or not, is a real treat.

Many late night talk shows have returned to the air full force after being away for a couple of weeks. But, everyone is still broadcasting from their homes, meaning that we're continuing to get to see some different sides of not only our favorite hosts, but the guests they have on the show. Martha Stewart recently appeared on one of our newly returned late night shows, and, what can I say, she was a hoot and a half, and everything we need to see on TV right now.

See that photo of her above? That’s how Ms. Martha started the interview, y’all. With a drink in her hand and gleefully surrounded (fine, not quite surrounded) by fancy booze-stuffs. Just from the look of her, you can tell that she’s about to be a fucking delight, and Martha Stewart did not disappoint when she showed up on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Check it out!

I am so glad that Seth Meyers caught Martha Stewart on a day / at a time when she was not in the mood to mince words. When he asked her about the design aesthetic of his new attic studio, not only did she seem to know everything about the room already, but she zeroed right in on that lamp behind him, and deemed it “not so country” and not deserving of a place in this particular room. She said it with a smile on her face, but if Ms. Martha hadn’t clearly been drinking for a while before this interview, that might not have been the case.

It's also hard not to love the way Martha Stewart shrugs noncommittally before saying the Meyers attic design "looks nice" in that high pitched voice that we all know means, "Seth, I believe you can do better and I am judging you for what's happened to that attic. But, also, I am tipsy and it doesn't matter that much right now." That Martha...she's a gem, amirite? We can't all have houses as cool as Jimmy Fallon, alright!

Meyers then moved on to asking Martha Stewart about how she's dealing with self-isolating, and she's clearly feeling some kinda way about technology right now. When Ms. Martha said she had to thank the people who were helping us get through this, I thought for sure that she was going to talk about doctors, nurses and maybe even give a shout out to anyone manufacturing toilet paper in these difficult times, but, nope! She had Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Zoom, FaceTime and Alexander Graham Bell on her mind instead.

I'm pretty sure, in her slightly forgetful and adult beverage-soaked haze, that she credited Gates with inventing the internet and Jobs for giving us laptop computers, but, I am not gonna be the one to tell Ms. Martha that she's wrong. At least not right now. I have enough trouble without trying to nurse a head wound caused by Martha Stewart lobbing a bottle of St-Germain at me, OK?

Martha Stewart really showed a lot of her personality in this video, and I think we should all be grateful for it. At least we know now that she hates texting and won't dare to do such a ridiculous thing from the other side of a wall. I mean, really! The peon who did this to Ms. Martha should be ashamed!

I love staying up until the wee hours of the 2025 TV schedule to watch my favorite late night TV hosts, but I alsoI feel that I have reason to be both concerned and optimistic about the future of the format at this point in its history. We have seen some exciting new developments in how this corner of programming can thrive in an era dominated by streaming and viral content, as well as some disheartening news that suggests a potential regression of what has made late-night TV special.

I will get more into the specifics of these contrasting feelings soon enough as I list out my favorite late-night TV hosts working today, ranked from least to most favorite. How do Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, or Jimmy Kimmel measure up against each other, in my opinion? Read on to find out…

9. Bill Maher (Real Time)

Bill Maher has been telling jokes for 40 years, which makes me wonder if he has a friendlier disposition performing stand-up than as a talk show host, but I may never find out because I have no interest in seeking out his specials. As the host of Politically Correct from 1993-2002 on Comedy Central and ABC and, currently, HBO’s Real Time since 2003, the comedian discusses various topics on the political spectrum with a versatile group of guests weekly, incorporating his staunch viewpoints at a satirical angle. I cannot help but question if Maher understands the difference between satire and insult, as his comedic style nowadays feels less funny and more mean-spirited.

Some notable examples include criticizing adult comic book fans mourning the death of Stan Lee in a blog post or poking fun at travel blogging as a profession in response to influencer Gabi Petito’s murder in a Real Time segment from October 2021. He could not have picked more unnecessary topics to judge at more inappropriate times and in less funny ways. I hope HBO would get real and cut Maher’s time short but they will more than likely keep him on for as long as he makes headlines.

8. Jimmy Fallon (The Tonight Show)

Former SNL cast member (who was hired quite young at 24) and “Weekend Update” host Jimmy Fallon got his first taste of late-night glory as a guest host for David Letterman on The Late Show in 2003. He would go on to succeed Conan O’Brien’s position on NBC’s Late Night five years later and, eventually, earn the top prize when he took over The Tonight Show in 2014. His unique hosting persona is given away in the show’s current official title: The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon – implying that he is not just “with” the show, but is its bonafide star, participating in live bits with celebrity guests and constantly proving himself as a committed showman.

The one reason I have for ranking Fallon so low on this list is, for as great an entertainer as he has proven to be, his interviewing skills still lack one important ingredient: authenticity. With every overstated laugh and incredulous compliment, he seems to spend more time being a people pleaser than really getting down to the nitty-gritty with his guests. Sometimes I’d rather he just stop asking questions (and interrupting his guests’ answers on occasion) and stick to singing, dancing, and playing games.

7. Andy Cohen (Watch What Happens Live)

Andy Cohen is a TV personality who has never had a problem staying authentic and often tries to hold his guests to the same standard. This can often be to his detriment and leads to many awkward celebrity interactions – even outside of his show, such as his supposed feud with Ryan Seacrest – but that’s about the only negative thing I would say about the St. Louis native.

Otherwise, it is no wonder why Watch What Happens Live has lasted more than a decade – debuting on Bravo in 2009 as a weekend event before being rebranded as a nightly show – and how Cohen has managed to stay so busy wearing multiple hats on TV. His intimate hosting style, which involves not hiding behind a desk, always keeps things interesting, and his charming presence is hard to resist.

6. Seth Meyers (Late Night)

Following one of the longest SNL tenures on record – during which he also served as a strong head writer and solo “Weekend Update” host – Seth Meyers seemed like a perfect fit to replace Jimmy Fallon on Late Night. Indeed, he has the interviewing chops Fallon lacks, but, admittedly, lacks the showmanship his predecessor boasts, and I recall seeing him struggle to get into a rhythm that helped him stand out and utilize his skill set to its full potential.

He would later combat the struggle to transition from satirical news reading on SNL to juggling traditional hosting duties on Late Night by swerving into that skid and, more or less, making that the basis of the show. As a result, he's done away with opening stand-up monologues altogether and incorporated his signature satire into bits, most often, from behind the desk, throwing in a few lighthearted sketches here and there – such as day drinking with celebrities in pre-taped bits. Meyers is the same guy he was when he was at SNL, but that may be just how it should be.

5. Jimmy Kimmel (Jimmy Kimmel Live)

Of the late-night “Jims,” I feel most partial to Kimmel, being the kind of host you would love to be a guest for, or even just grab a beer with. He has certainly come a long way from his time as Adam Corolla’s co-host for Comedy Central’s The Man Show – a program which he would probably be one to criticize today – since debuting Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2003.

His signature snark and everyman relatability have lent themselves to some of late-night’s most amusing interviews and hilarious moments, with one of the funniest bits being his increasingly furious feud with Matt Damon. What started as an impromptu throwaway joke from Kimmel’s early days on ABC has evolved into a recurring segment – including one instance in which the Academy Award winner took over the show – with a surprising endurance that has even left the host himself amazed. It is one of the most celebrated traditions in late-night and cemented Kimmel as one of the strongest in the game.

4. John Oliver (Last Week Tonight)

The Daily Show has proven to be a consistently fertile breeding ground for comedic talent, but one of the best to make the transition from social satire to… well, more social satire, is John Oliver. The British comedian and one-time Community cast member first showed that he had what it takes to be the man behind the desk as a temporary fill-in on The Daily Show while Jon Stewart was out directing a film.

As the host of Last Week Tonight on HBO, Oliver touches on everything from entertainment to politics with a refreshingly light and accessible tone that, no matter how dark the subject material can get, never fails to be entertaining. What is his secret? Other than his clever wit or personable tone, I think it might be the accent.

3. John Mulaney (Everybody’s Live)

In the summer of 2024, celebrated comedian John Mulaney debuted a six-part talk show-style series that streamed live with a Netflix subscription called Everybody’s in L.A. The bizarre, off-the-cuff tone of the program made such a remarkable impression on viewers that the demand to see more was high… and eventually granted the following year.

Everybody’s Live, a great comfort watch that has already been renewed for a second season, according to Deadline, is one of the best editions of “late night TV” I have ever seen, with its use of absurd and relatable topics that dominate each weekly episode, fascinating and hilarious guests, remote segments that feel authentic yet too good to be true, and an unmatched rotation of awesome musical guests. The show is already a game-changer in the format by streaming live weekly on Netflix, but it is Mulaney’s bold and ingeniously wacky approach to the material that makes him a standout.

2. Stephen Colbert (Late Show)

It is with a heavy heart that I talk about my choice for the second-best late night TV host working today, because the show he has hosted for more than a decade is coming to an end. In July 2025, citing economic reasons, CBS cancelled Late Show, which was started by David Letterman in the early 1990s, meaning that Stephen Colbert will be packing things up at the network in May of next year.

It is frustrating to know that the former Daily Show correspondent and Colbert Report host’s time at the Ed Sullivan Theatre – from which he conducted wonderful celebrity interviews and participated in brilliant comedy sketches – is already nearing its end. However, with his one-in-a-million wit, reserved and well-spoken tone, and courage to never back down from speaking his mind, I have no doubt that we will be seeing Colbert back in the game beyond CBS at some point.

1. Jon Stewart (The Daily Show)

While Trevor Noah proved to be a fantastic successor when Jon Stewart left The Daily Show in 2015, it really felt like the end of the political satire in its most essential form. Luckily, we would only have to wait a little less than a decade to see him come back home.

At the moment, Stewart only appears once a week amid a rotation of guest hosts filling in the remaining days, and he is currently contracted only to appear through 2025. However, his appearances so far have been a fruitful reminder of why his equally witty and boldly insightful commentary made him one of broadcasting’s most trusted faces, despite being on a comedy network. For as long as we have him back, I believe he deserves to stand at the top of my list.

If you ask me, I do not believe for one second that late-night TV is dying, but I do believe it is changing. Whether or not it is changing for the better still remains up for debate. However, as long as we have talented comedians like these people leading the format, it has nowhere to go but up.

Perhaps more so than any of Saturday Night Live's other former stars, Adam Sandler has been a magnet for mega-projects in Hollywood over the past 24 years. So much so, that he hadn't ever returned to his former NBC home to serve as its host in all that time. He's back now, though, and is set to take the stage for the May 4 episode. That is, of course, if he even makes it to Saturday night without collapsing from sketch-ridden exhaustion.

Adam Sandler appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about his big return to Lorne Michaels' SNL, and he pointed out that while it's been a great and happy time, it's taking a lot out of him.

Even though Adam Sandler spend some early years of his career living it up in the Saturday Night Live studio and offices, everything has come a long way since the early 1990s. Especially in the age department.

When Seth Meyers asked Adam Sandler if he made the effort to take part in one of SNL's long-night writing sessions, the star of Netflix's upcoming Murder Mystery confirmed that he had, and that it was not a boon for maintaining a non-hostile mood after the fact. Here's how Sandler put it.

So if anyone notices at the top of Saturday night's show that Adam Sandler looks ready to bite the heads off of nails in order to spit them back in people's faces, it might be because he's still trying to catch up on his sleep. Chances are, though, that he'll be just fine. In any case, we hope he's not too tired to deliver some news updates via operatic solos.

Luckily for Adam Sandler, the Saturday Night Live team reached out to him long before his scheduled hosting date. As the comedian put it, it was his Netflix special 100% Fresh that inspired the decision to get him on board, so he's had a while to get re-acclimated with SNL's current comedy stylings. When Seth Meyers was asked to host a Season 44 episode late last year, on the other hand, he said he was given about a week's notice. I guess it helps that he works in the same building.

Though Sandler says he's having a great time connecting with the current cast, as well as bringing some old friends back into it, there is one semi-complaint he brought to the table: he waited too long to return, though not for the reasons one might guess. Here's how he put it:

There's no doubt that Adam Sandler looks a tad older than he did on his last regular season episode 24 years ago. But so long as his comedic chops remain youthful and timeless, fans should have a great time watching him host.

Saturday Night Live will air Adam Sandler's episode on Saturday, May 4, at 11:35 p.m. ET, with Shawn Mendes as the musical guest. There are only two episodes left after that, to be hosted by Emma Thompson and Paul Rudd.

When you play the game of late night, you win or you -- oh wait, wrong show. When it comes to TV competition, the "winner" is usually declared through whoever nabs the most viewers in the advertiser-loving 18-49 demographic. So even though The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on CBS was the most-watched late night show of 2018, it still lost out to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on NBC when it comes to the key ratings.

But it's too simplistic to just raise Jimmy Fallon's hand as the winner, since he lost more in 2018 than Stephen Colbert gained.

There are more than two players in this game, but the Late Show vs. Tonight Show battle has a history, and all of the numbers are getting closer.

The Tonight Show, The Late Show, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! on ABC all lost viewers from this time last year, but Stephen Colbert's Late Show lost the fewest.

Stephen Colbert's The Late Show is averaging 3.67 million nightly viewers, according to THR's figures through December 15. That tops The Tonight Show's 2.46 million, giving The Late Show a lead of 1.21 million. That marks an increase over the lead of 980,000 viewers that Colbert held at the same time last year. Jimmy Kimmel Live! is at 2.08 million for 2018 so far.

In overall viewers, The Late Show is off only 1 percent from last year, while The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live dropped, respectively, 10 and 11 percent.

When it comes to the 18-49 ratings, The Late Show managed to catch up to The Tonight Show in November, but then Jimmy Fallon retook his lead. The Tonight Show has the overall lead in that demo for 2018, with a 0.54 rating vs. 0.52 for Colbert and 0.4 for Kimmel. As THR noted, all of them were off significantly from this time last year -- 13 percent for Colbert, 18 percent for Kimmel, and a whopping 21 percent for Fallon.

So it's hard to see The Tonight Show having "won" 2018 when it lost that many viewers in the key demo. Jimmy Fallon's lead over Stephen Colbert has shrunk from 0.08 at this time last year to 0.02 right now.

That said, network TV is a youth-obsessed market, and The Late Show has the oldest average viewer at 63.3; Jimmy Kimmel Live follows with 59.4, and Tonight at 57.5. So they are all skewing older when it comes to watching the shows on TV.

What about watching digitally? That's where Jimmy Fallon shows a larger lead. The Tonight Show clips earned 1.73 billion views on YouTube through November 30, vs. 1.5 million for Stephen Colbert's show and 1.49 billion for Jimmy Kimmel.

What about the later late-night guys? When it comes to the 12:35 a.m. crowd, NBC's Late Night With Seth Meyers is still topping The Late Late Show With James Corden in both viewers and ratings. Late Night averaged 1.48 million viewers with a 0.32 rating, and CBS's Late Late Show earned 1.35 million with a 0.26 rating.

The data didn't go into digital views for the late late hosts, but that's where you could certainly expect James Corden to take the lead with his viral Carpool Karaoke sketches. His most recent edition, with Cardi B, got more than 10 million views in one day. Is that potentially taking away from episode viewers? Are people just going straight to the clips without watching the show? And does that even matter when it comes to making money moves for CBS?

Back to the 11:35 network crowd. (As opposed to Conan on TBS, which is an entirely different ball of wax.) The Late Show vs. Tonight Show battle is still fascinating to watch. David Letterman started The Late Show on CBS after NBC gave The Tonight Show gig to Jay Leno when Johnny Carson retired. That launched a Jay vs. Dave, Tonight Show vs. Late Show rivalry.

Jay Leno hosted The Tonight Show for years before NBC gave Conan O'Brien a very brief run; Jay Leno took the show back until Jimmy Fallon took over in 2014. Meanwhile, David Letterman retired from The Late Show in 2015, passing the torch to Stephen Colbert.

Stephen Colbert had a rough start on The Late Show, but eventually found his niche, especially on the political front after the 2016 presidential election. His show started passing The Tonight Show in overall viewers, took a step back for a bit, and now consistently beats Jimmy Fallon's show on that front.

The Tonight Show used to be the king of late night overall, but now it can just claim its slight edge in the 18-49 demo. If that edge keeps slipping, and The Late Show manages to overtake it in the ratings on a consistent basis in 2019, then we will officially have a new king of late night. That said, a lot can happen in a year.

It's not a great sign that all of the late night hosts are losing viewers, even if The Late Show is losing them at the slowest rate. But that's an overall trend on television, thanks to so many other ways of viewing programs -- or just clips from those programs -- and so many other alternatives in streaming. They call this Peak TV, but it's also Content Overload. (SNL recently poked fun at Netflix on that front.)

Stephen Colbert seems to be finding his place on the political front -- vs. Jimmy Fallon, who likes to keep things light instead of controversial -- but what happens if Donald Trump does not continue as president after 2020? That's not a factor for 2019, but it has to be something The Late Show brass are thinking about.

Then again, it's not like politics is Stephen Colbert's only angle. Just this week, he got some solid shots in at CBS itself and his former boss Les Moonves. Colbert is earning a reputation as a very bold satirical voice on late night, and that may help him no matter the future political situation.

This coming year should be very interesting on the TV front, with so much going on. Here's what's on the primetime docket for midseason 2019.

Amy Adams is currently garnering critical acclaim for her performances in HBO's dark drama Sharp Objects. Given the caliber of actress that Adams is, it is next to impossible to imagine her ever being fired from a role. Well, it turns out not everyone realized the talent they had before them when Adams started her career. In an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Adams revealed that she had been let go from three (yes, three) different television series. So what was the reason? Adams explained saying:

The curiosity is only natural -- which shows fired Amy Adams? Well, let's dig into it. A little research and intense Googling may hold the key to unlocking at least one of the mystery shows. Of course, this is all speculation. Let's begin with the first two series, both of which are super tricky to ascertain. Given the clue Adams shares regarding her age, we can deduce those instances occurred early in her career. So those shows' identities are both pretty open-ended.

If they are shows that actually made it to air, there are a lot of potential options. In chronological order, they range from the sitcom That '70s Show, the cult favorite Charmed, the dramas Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane and Providence, as well as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Amy Adams was featured in all of those in 2000. Between Buffy in 2000 and what is most assuredly show number three in 2004, Adams appeared in Smallville and The West Wing. We may be able to cross one of those shows off the list.

That is because her role on the Season 1 Smallville episode "Craving" was most assuredly a guest appearance given the nature of her character's backstory. So you can probably take that show off the table. The other series remain possibilities for both the first and second shows that Adams was fired from given the clues available, although it all depends on whether she was fired before any episodes made it to the airwaves and she was given credit. We may never know what those two shows were unless Adams opens up about them. That brings us to the final series Adams mentions.

The identity of the third and final show Amy Adams discloses being fired from is pretty obvious. Based on the clue of Rob Lowe's participation in the series, it is easy to surmise that the television show in question is probably none other than the short-lived CBS drama Dr. Vegas, which starred Lowe and Adams.

Despite the hardships and rejection she faced early in her career, Amy Adams persevered, and she is now one of the top actresses working today. It is proof of the importance of not giving up. And thankfully, she has not let her early television experiences keep her from returning to the medium and starring in Sharp Objects.

Amy Adams has to make a confession to make: she constantly calls people by accident. She's sorry about it too. The Academy Award-nominated actress is connected to many people in the sunny town of Hollywood. Sure enough, Adams has lots of high profile contacts inside her phone. Well, when she calls other people, her cheeks intercept the call, and she finds herself calling random celebrities by accident. The one person who ends up getting the most accidental calls from Adams? Christina Applegate, since she's at the top of the contact list. As Amy Adams elaborates in this clip from Late Night with Seth Meyers, the Sharp Objects actress not only feels bad about calling Christina Applegate by accident so many times (she jokes that it's close to 300 times in the past two months), but Adams also think it's a bit rude on her part to not talk to Applegate on the spot or explain herself during these random and unprovoked phone interactions. But this is something the acclaimed actress wanted to make a point to apologize for in her most recent appearance on the NBC late night talk show. Hopefully, that clears the air up a little bit. Christina Applegate isn't the only celebrity who is getting random cheek-dialed calls from Amy Adams. Jennifer Aniston is also getting them as well, according to Adams. More specifically, Aniston is getting FaceTime calls from Adams while she's in the bedroom. Talk about awkward.

While Amy Adams is embarrassed about the whole thing, at least she has a good sense of humor about the whole thing. And if it happens again in the future -- and it sounds like it will -- hopefully Christina Applegate, Jennifer Aniston and the rest of the misdialed celebrities know why that's the case.

Meanwhile, Amy Adams can currently be seen on HBO's acclaimed mini-series Sharp Objects, which is based on the book of the same name by Gillian Flynn. The actress also serves as an executive producer on the series, for the first time in her career. Additionally, Amy Adams will soon be seen in Adam McKay's upcoming untitled Dick Cheney biopic (rumored to be titled Backseat) later this year. She will play Lynne Cheney in the anticipated forthcoming film opposite Christian Bale's Dick Cheney and Sam Rockwell's George W. Bush. She is also attached to Joe Wright's The Woman in the Window and Pablo Larrain's The True American, both of which are expected to be released next year. Adams also made a cameo in Justice League.

Seth Meyers is a father once again, and the late night talk show host has one hell of a story to tell relating to the birth of his newest child. As the NBC personality revealed on Late Night with Seth Meyers just last night, things didn't exactly go according to plan when it came time for Meyers's wife, Alexi Ashe, to deliver their newest child. In fact, Alexi and Seth didn't even make it to the hospital. Instead, they welcomed their new son into the world in their apartment lobby. And, of course, Seth Meyers is here to tell the bizarre-yet-heart tugging story. Here's how Seth Meyers told it on his show.

Seth Meyers is no stranger when it comes to dramatic births with his wife, as he explained in the clip. The birth of their first child, two-year-old Ashe Meyers, was also fraught with worries and difficulties, as Alexi Ashe started getting contractions very quickly suddenly. In fact, and Seth and Alexi were concerned that Alexi was going to give birth to their first child in the Uber they were riding in. Meyers said they "just made it" to the hospital in the nick of time during their first pregnancy "with twenty minutes to spare," although the couple wasn't quite as lucky this time around. Meyers said that story was "totally normal," though, compared to what happened on Sunday afternoon. As he explained, things went down even quicker than they did before.

While Seth Meyers knew the pregnancy was going to happen on Sunday, he thought he had "plenty of time" to get to the hospital, so he wasn't quite as concerned as his wife was at first. That changed, however, when his wife made it clear that they needed to go to the hospital as soon as possible. Any calm that was found in the situation before had dissipated, as Alexi Ashe was in an instant amount of pain, seemingly having one long contraction.

Then things took quite a turn. As Alexi Ashe told her husband, the baby was coming right then and there. At that very moment, Seth Meyers' wife just gave birth. Here's how he explained it on the late night show.

From there, the apartment lobby got a whole lot more crowded. Not only with the addition of Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe's new baby, but with the inclusion of the New York Fire Department, who showed up on hand to help with the delivery of the baby. Plus, neighbors were stopping their fellow residents from entering their own homes due to the situation. To make matters more extreme, the couple moved into the apartment only at the end of last year. It's an unusual series of circumstances, and Seth Meyers tells the whole story with his usual wit and charm. Check out the TV clip below.

Congratulations to Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe on the birth of their newest child, whom they named Axel. At the very least, they have one great story!

Although Fifty Shades Freed will switch gears a little and give the fanbase a movie that is equal parts thriller and sex, filming the sex scenes was still pretty challenging. Fifty Shades Freed lead Dakota Johnson recently explained on Late Night with Seth Meyers that Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed filmed back-to-back, which meant that all of the sex scenes were filmed in close proximity to one another, as well. Per Johnson, acting sweaty and in the throes of passion when these scenes are filmed in succession can be challenging.

Yeah, that's right, Fifty and Ana have sex in a lot of the same places. There's his place, of course, which includes the Red Room. They also really like the boathouse at his parent's place. Then, there are other scenes that could be done in the same locations, like fooling around in cars and showers and more. After Fifty Shades of Grey was completed, it looks as if the production team decided it would be more advantageous to just bang through all of those scenes quickly, pun intended. It probably made sense, budget-wise, to film Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed at the same time, but it also wasn't a cakewalk for the actors.

Sex scenes are notably pretty uncomfortable. Movies do a lot to try and make them less so by only allowing the necessary people into the room, and giving actors and actresses the ability to cover their private parts. (A wee-bag, as Jamie Dornan calls it.) However, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan have to film these sorts of scenes a lot, so at this point, it's probably a little less awkward than it used to be, although Johnson has been candid previously about how she gets through filming all the sex for the movies. According to Johnson, the bigger issue is figuring out how to vary things up a bit. It takes more than whips and spreader bars to act, people.

Elsewhere during Late Night with Seth Meyers, the host touched on Christian Grey's impending marriage to Anastasia Steele, with both cracking jokes about how since Ana is married to Christian, they will soon be at a place where their relationship only has "one shade." With the Holidas almost upon us and bringing tons of joy and family time, avid TV and film fans know that there's another season to look forward to: Awards Season. Ceremonies like the Oscars and Golden Globes will honor the best the entertainment world has to offer, with the latter recognizing both movies and television. The Golden Globes also doesn't take itself too seriously, allowing hosts to have freedom and poke at all the Hollywood elite that has assembled in hopes of taking home a coveted statue. And now The Golden Globes has found its newest host: late night host and Saturday Night Live alum Seth Meyers.

The Golden Globes also made their own statement about Seth Meyers' first time hosting the awards ceremony. They said,

Seth Meyers is the latest in a line of notable SNL alums who have hosted the Golden Globes. Meyers' buddy Amy Poehler hosted alongside frequent collaborator Tina Fey for two years in a row, which is probably the most acclaimed hosting in recent memory. SNL's Jimmy Fallon hosted the show last year, opening up with a massive La La Land inspired musical number featuring the various attendees.

Seth Meyers has been gaining more and more fans since he began hosting Late Night in 2014. While he got off to a shaky start in the ratings, the show has since become a competitor in the late night market alongside Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel. Since the election of President Trump, Late Night has also gotten way more political, with his segment "A Closer Look" addressing the issues of the week.

And with the Golden Globes just a few months away, we should see plenty of Awards-bait movies hitting theaters. Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks are no doubt hoping for nominations with their upcoming drama The Post, competing with Emma Stone's Battle of the Sexes and Margot Robbie's I, Tonya.

While This Is Us didn't really need much more help getting fans psyched for Season 2, the news that Sylvester Stallone was going to be on NBC's hit drama was certainly helpful. Fans have seen pictures of Stallone palling around on set with the stars of the show, and it appears those photo ops weren't just good PR, as actor Justin Hartley shares what it was like having the star on set in the quote below:

So now, thanks to Milo Ventimiglia, the cast of This Is Us got a chance to experience the awesomeness that is Sylvester Stallone. While the other actor's got their pictures, Justin Hartley tells Late Night With Seth Meyers that he even got the added bonus of working out with the living action hero, which had to be super intimidating. Imagine training next to a 71-year-old Rocky in the gym and potentially not being able to keep up!

For those that missed the news on Stallone's appearance on This Is Us, the actor will be playing himself in the film that Kevin Pearson is currently shooting with Ron Howard. The Season 2 premiere showed off some of Kevin shooting the film already, and that marriage proposal in France certainly didn't seem to fit the description of the war film we've heard is being made. Perhaps less speculation should be spent on that, and more time should be spent on whether or not Sly will be able to make us cry like literally every other character on this show.

For those tuning in specifically to see Sylvester Stallone on This Is Us, current word is that fans will be able to see him on the series October 10th. That makes sense, considering tonight's new episode appears to center around Justin Hartley's Kevin returning to the role of "The Manny," which makes it likely that he won't be on the set of his film in this episode. With Stallone on the horizon, it will be interesting to see if next week's episode is able to top the series high set by the Season 2 premiere.

Academy Award-winner Jennifer Lawrence recently sat down for an amusing late-night interview with Seth Meyers. While sipping on red wine, the 27-year-old movie star chatted about personal drinking escapades. For example, Lawrence talked about how she got into a bar fight not long ago. She said it happened after work one day in Budapest, Hungary. Apparently, the scuffle occurred after a guy cussed her out for not taking a selfie with him. Shocked, Seth Meyers said Budapest seemed like a dangerous place to get into a bar fight, to which J. Law quipped,

Jennifer Lawrence proceeded to tell the Late Night with Seth Meyers audience what happened. Lawrence said a man approached her at the pub after she had had a bunch of drinks, and he asked if he could get a selfie with her to show his girlfriend. When Lawrence declined twice, the guy became frustrated and threw some F-bombs at her. The actress became overcome with emotion, grabbed him by the collar, and yelled at him for cussing her out. Then she grabbed beers from the table and dumped them on him.

The man hurried away from the table, but in his haste, he accidentally left behind his suitcase. Jennifer Lawrence realized it was the man's luggage, so she continued dumping beers on it until a friend stopped her---not because pouring beers on his belongings was, perhaps, a crummy thing to do, but because she was wasting everybody's drinks. Lawrence explained,

Seth Meyers called the story "a good cautionary tale," most likely about messing with Jennifer Lawrence after she has had a few adult beverages. Meyers joked he hoped somebody got pictures of the Oscar winner going bonkers with the beers. Lawrence said,

The wild story came after Jennifer Lawrence had been talking about other goofy personal drinking tales. For example, Lawrence said she once spiked Michelle Pfeiffer's iced tea on the set of mother!. Unfortunately, Lawrence didn't explain that particular story in full. She got worried her alcohol-related stories were painting her in the wrong light, so she sidestepped the details of that anecdote and suggested she still a little hungover from the mother! premiere. Jennifer Lawrence's schedule might be busy, but she evidently is fitting some relaxation into her agenda. Still, as Seth Meyers hinted, you might not want to mess with Lawrence if you ever catch her kicking back with drinks at a pub.
