The thing about true crime shows is that there is always going to be another documentary, docuseries, or drama series down the road that will grab our attention with tales so unbelievable that we just can’t look away.

The legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard continues forward and now a new player has entered the arena. Johnny Depp has enlisted a brand new attorney. Kathleen Zellner, known from Netflix’s Making a Murderer documentary, is now working for Depp for much the same reason she was part of that series, because she believes she is defending somebody who has been falsely accused. 

Johnny Depp has been involved in multiple legal matters against his ex-wife Amber Heard in recent years and some of those are still outstanding. In November of 2020 Depp lost a libel lawsuit against a U.K newspaper which referred to him as a “wife-beater.” Amber Heard’s testimony was key to that verdict. A defamation lawsuit against Heard herself is currently pending in Virginia and is expected to go to trial later this year. 

Most will know Kathleen Zellner from the second season of the Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer. She joined the legal fight of Steven Avery who was convicted of sexual assault in 1985. He served 18 years in prison before being released after his conviction was overturned.

In a statement to PageSix, Kathleen Zellner says that she is happy to be joining Johnny Depp’s “dream team” of lawyers and she references her history of defending those that have been wrongly accused, clearly equating the accusations of abuse against Johnny Depp with her other cases. 

Johnny Depp lost his appeal on the U.K case back in March of last year, so it doesn’t appear that the focus of Depp’s new lawyer will be litigating that verdict, but rather focusing on the case coming up. In 2019 Amber Heard wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post in which she spoke of being a survivor of abuse. While she never mentioned any names in the article, it was widely believed that Heard was speaking about her marriage to Johnny Depp. He has now sued for defamation, claiming that Heard’s op-ed directly led to Disney’s decision to move forward with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise without him.

The case has been delayed more than once as courts continue to deal with covid restrictions, but a Virginia court has now set the case to be heard in May. Amber Heard has also filed a countersuit for defamation against Depp. She claims she has been the victim of a smear campaign that has attempted to harm her career, including getting her removed from the cast of the Aquaman franchise. Her side has also attempted to get Depp’s suit tossed out of court on multiple occasions but the court has ruled against her team each time. 

At the end of last year Johnny Depp’s side won access to Amber Heard’s phone. His team is arguing that photos of Heard showing bruises she allegedly received from Depp were doctored.  

The coronavirus pandemic has had an unprecedented effect on the world at large, from global self-quarantining to the myriad businesses that have been forced to remain closed for weeks and months. The widespread virus itself has caused suffering for many people of all ages and nationalities, regardless of their situations, and has been a particularly unfortunate issue for this country's prison population. In fact, it was recently revealed that Steven Avery, the accused subject of Netflix's acclaimed docu-series Making a Murderer, was diagnosed with COVID-19, and his lawyer has provided an update on the situation.

It appears as though Steven Avery managed to come into contact with another coronavirus-afflicted prisoner or prison employee, as he recently tested positively for COVID-19. But according to his current lawyer and Making a Murderer Season 2 subject Kathleen Zellner, Avery's situation doesn't appear to be as worrisome as it is for many others out there. Here's how she put it in a post on Twitter:

While Kathleen Zellner didn't go into any deep specifics about Steven Avery's day-to-day progress with his COVID-19 diagnosis, her declarative update did seem to confirm that the alleged killer won't be one of the 107,000+ victims who lost their lives due to complications from the still-non-contained novel coronavirus. It's not clear exactly how much medical attention the headline-making Avery has received, but Zellner's tweet implies that he's on the road to a full recovery, so it's assumed his situation hasn't been as harrowing as it's been for others.

As it turns out, Kathleen Zellner wasn't the only legal representative that spoke out about Steven Avery's diagnosis. His former defense attorney Jerome Buting, who was one of the fan-favorite standouts from Making a Murderer Season 1, also took to Twitter to share well-wishes for his former client's recovery process.

That update comes by way of Steven Avery's former romantic partner Sandy Greenman, who has remained a part of Avery's life in recent years during his unsuccessful-for-now appeals process. It sounds like the full recovery that Kathleen Zellner talked about is partially due to Avery not suffering from highly debilitating symptoms over a long range of time. Hopefully by sequestering him to a cell by his lonesome, the powers that be at the prison were able to limit the spread of COVID-19 between the compound's many walls.

Perhaps fans will get to hear more about the particulars of Steven Avery's COVID-19 situation at some point in the future, to get a first-person perspective on how it was to deal with the virus while incarcerated within Waupun Correctional Institution in Wisconsin. Making a Murderer, Netflix’s acclaimed docuseries, recently took an interesting turn. The series, which debuted on Netflix in 2015 and later premiered Making a Murderer Part 2 last October, followed the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach and included interviews with convicted murderers Steven Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey. New evidence, however, alleges that it was another man who killed Halbach.

All throughout Season 1 of Making a Murderer, Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey kept to the story of their innocence in the murder of Teresa Halbach. The first season drew such an impressive number of viewers and high-profile coverage that the case invited a second look. Were Avery and Dassey wrongly convicted? The docuseries seemed to believe so. And, a confession has emerged that suggests Avery and Dassey may be as innocent as they claim.

Speaking with Fox News, Shawn Rech, the director of Convicting a Murderer, a spinoff of Making a Murderer, says that an unnamed Wisconsin inmate confessed to the murder of Teresa Halbach. Rech, who was able to get the confession on tape and submitted the evidence to investigators and the attorneys for Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, thought the whole ordeal was “very strange.”

Although the inmate’s name has not yet been released, Shawn Rech says that they’d been investigating this particular man for a year and a half while doing research for Convicting a Murderer. The inmate had been involved in an entirely separate case from that of Teresa Halbach, but had reportedly admitted to killing her.

Here’s what Shawn Rech had to say about the bizarre turn of events:

After the first season of Making a Murderer, attorney Kathleen Zellner, well-known for overturning cases for the wrongly convicted, took over Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey’s case. However, Shawn Rech confirmed that Avery and Dassey had nothing to do with Convicting a Murderer or the new evidence he’d managed to retrieve about Teresa Halbach’s murder, noting that they see his documentary "as an adversarial project" because it includes the point of view of law enforcement.

While he did his due diligence and handed the confession over to authorities, Shawn Rech also said that he's unsure of the truthfulness of it:

Hopefully, authorities will take the confession seriously and see if there's any truth behind it. Making a Murderer Part 1 and Part 2 are available to stream on Netflix. While some Making a Murderer viewers may still be petitioning for a new trial for Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey, another person involved in the documentary is requesting a case of his own. Andrew Colborn, who some may remember as the Wisconsin cop vital in the case against Steven Avery, has a bone to pick with Netflix and the makers of the documentary. Colborn has filed a defamation suit and blames the show for misrepresenting him throughout the series.

In the official filing, the defamation lawsuit alleged that portions of Making a Murderer were positioned to make it appear as though he framed Steven Avery for murder. The official complaint states that "material and significant facts" were omitted or distorted which help portray Andrew Colborn as well as others in a negative light. Furthermore, the lawsuit alleges that the documentarians did this intentionally, all in an effort to make the docuseries more profitable.

As for what the Making a Murderer team allegedly distorted or falsified, Andrew Colborn's lawsuit states that the true-crime drama presents the idea he planted Teresa Halbach's SUV at the Avery Salvage Yard. According to the suit, the claims made were "entirely baseless and false" and the defendants knew that but included it anyway.

As for how that was done, Andrew Colborn's case states that Making a Murderer heavily edited his testimony in the trial. A court transcript of the testimony supposedly supports this and shows that the filmmakers allegedly featured Colborn answering yes to a question that was sustained by the courts. Instead, Colborn's yes was to a rephrased follow up question by the defense, which is apparently not shown.

The lawsuit states that Making a Murderer also omitted a line from the call Andrew Colborn made in regards to the SUV. Again, the intention of this in the plaintiff's eyes is that the Netflix docuseries did so maliciously, as the omitted line that he feels is important to the case existed in the original call and was played in court. Without this line, the plaintiff feels the viewer is left to feel Colborn set Avery up.

With regard to the impact Making a Murderer has had on Andrew Colborn's life, the lawsuit states that over 732 YouTube videos have been created that reference his activity in the case. In addition to national and local coverage of the event, there are 29 CD's full of threatening phone calls Colborn has received since the Netflix show aired. These calls allegedly include threats from viewers who say they will murder Colborn and his family, as well as other disturbing things.

As of writing, the Making a Murder documentarians Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have not publicly addressed the claims. One would assume a response is coming, and it will be interesting to see how this case develops from there. A victory in Andrew Colborn's case could lead to others featured in the docu-series filing their own defamation cases and could possibly hurt public opinion on whether Steven Avery is deserving of a re-trial.

Back in 2015, Netflix blew up the true crime genre with the powerful and captivating series Making a Murderer, which drew national attention to the Wisconsin murder of Teresa Hallbach and the convictions of accused murderer Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey. Get ready to dive back into those small town politics once more for Making a Murderer Part 2, the second season of the hit series that'll be hitting Netflix on October 19. Perhaps it's because we're already aware of everything that went down in Season 1, as well as much of the courtroom aftermath that followed it, but the trailer for Season 2 was slightly less invigorating, slightly less frustrating and slightly less enjoyable to watch. Rather than vaulting over to a different murder case, filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos slid their hooks back into Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey for another enlightening look at the legal processes within small town America.

As seen in the trailer, Making a Murderer Part 2 will keep part of its focus on Kathleen Zellner, the newest wrongful conviction attorney to step in to defend Steven Avery. Zellner takes the place of the first season's defense team, made up of Dean Strang and Jerome Buting, and will be leading the charge to try and reverse the charges that Avery was slapped with. If she's successful, it would be the second time that Avery would get released from prison after having a wrongful conviction overturned. (He spent 18 years in prison after being wrongfully accused and arrested for sexual assault.)

Kathleen Zellner made a name for herself in the world of wrongful convictions, and she is possibly the best bet that Avery and the Making a Murderer team have of changing things. Assuming the filmmakers' beliefs about Avery and Dassey's innocence hold true, that is.

In the weeks and months following the release of Making a Murderer, fans could find updates popping up from national news media outlets, and viewers were not shy about making their opinions known to prosecutors like Ken Kratz. Several times, it seemed like Steven Avery and/or Brendan Dassey might have earned a successful appeal or retrial. Nothing permanent every happened on that front, but it didn't take long for Netflix to announce the follow-up season, knowing that its customers would be interested in keeping up with the complicated legal case. And we'll be doing just that later this month.

Three years since its premiere in 2015, Netflix's true crime docuseries Making a Murderer is headed back for another installment. While viewers have long-known there would be a follow-up season; they did not know a lot about what it would entail. Well, Netflix has shed some new light on it. Along with providing new key art for the series (pictured above), the streamer has revealed that Making a Murderer Part 2 will release on October 19, and will detail the lives of the accused. Here is what you need to know.

Picking up where the first season left off, Making a Murderer Part 2 is set to build on the events depicted therein, with Season 2 shifting towards chronicling the experience of the two men convicted and imprisoned for the murder of Teresa Halbach -- Steven Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey. Each man is serving a life sentence for Teresa Halbach's murder, a crime they both maintain they are innocent of committing.

Following the headline-making nature of Making a Murderer's first season, there have been developments in both Steven Avery and Brandon Dassey's post-conviction cases. High-powered attorney Kathleen Zellner has come aboard as Avery's attorney, and Making a Murderer Part 2 will chronicle her efforts.

Making a Murderer assures that viewers will be able to watch as Kathleen Zellner -- who, according to the press release, has "righted more wrongful convictions than any private attorney in America," -- delves into how and why a jury convicted Steven Avery of Teresa Halbach's murder. The series also previews that Season 2 will follow Zellner as she uncovers "unexpected evidence" relating to what could have happened to Halbach. As was the case in the initial season, Avery's is not the only case Making a Murderer Part 2 will chronicle.

Part 2 will also follow the post-conviction case of Steven Avery's nephew, Brendan Dassey, with his attorneys focusing on proving Dassey's murder confession was made involuntarily. It is a fight that has the potential of reaching the U.S. Supreme Court. A federal magistrate judge overturned Dassey's conviction in 2016, though after a vote in the federal appeals court in late 2017, four judges ruled against Dassey (and three for him), and that initial ruling was overturned.

While the controversial docuseries made headlines upon its release on Netflix during the final weeks of 2015, Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey's cases have remained somewhat out of the spotlight during the past three years, with the occasional exception occurring here and there due to court proceedings. The second installment of Making a Murderer is bound to cause a resurgence of interest in both convictions. Due to it being a docuseries, we know that, to date, neither man has been released since the original season bowed.

Like its previous installment, Part 2 will arrive towards the end of the year, except with a lot more time left in the hourglass than Part 1 made possible. The Season 2 debut of Making a Murderer will go down on October 19 on Netflix. While you wait for it to debut, television fans have a myriad of new content options to watch on the streaming giant and other platforms this fall.

Brendan Dassey wound up in the spotlight back in 2015 when the docu-series Making a Murderer was released on Netflix. The ten-part series chronicled the case of Steven Avery, who was wrongfully convicted of rape and incarcerated for 18 years before being exonerated, then later convicted for the rape and murder of a photographer. Avery's nephew Brendan Dassey was convicted of allegedly helping his uncle commit the crimes and then cover up the evidence. Dassey's conviction was the source of a great deal of controversy, and his case may head to the Supreme Court next.

A team of lawyers intends to take Brendan Dassey's case to the Supreme Court, although there's no guarantee that the court will agree to take on the case. The justices of the court had their first chance to consider the case in a closed-door meeting on June 21, with arguments to be held in the fall if Dassey's lawyers get their way and the case makes it to the highest court in the land. The argument in Dassey's favor is that the confession used to convict him was coerced and should not be considered valid evidence.

The news that Brendan Dassey's case could be headed to the Supreme Court comes months after he and his family got some very bad news. Despite the fact that a federal magistrate judge overturned the controversial conviction back in 2016, a state review overturned that ruling on December 8, 2017 after a federal appeals court voted. It was a close call, with three of the seven judges voting in Dassey's favor.

The odds of Brendan Dassey's case making it to the Supreme Court are relatively slim, given that the Supreme Court rejects most of the cases that it is asked to consider every year, with the cases numbering in the thousands. Dassey's lawyers may hope that he gets his confession thrown out and a new trial, but nothing is certain at this point. According to CBS News, Dassey's lawyers have raised the point that the case could be relevant to other instances of juveniles who are convicted of crimes due to pressure from authorities despite intellectual difficulties.

Given that Brendan Dassey was only 16 years old at the time of his confession, his grades ranged from Cs to Fs, and the confession itself wasn't the most clear-cut (as seen by viewers of Making a Murderer), it does seem like his case could set a major precedent if he gets a new trial, whether his conviction is overturned or not. We'll have to wait and see if his lawyers get their way and his case gets another chance in the courts.

It's no secret that Netflix has changed the world of TV production. The streaming service began original content with shows like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, and soon began dipping its toes into other TV genres. This includes unscripted series, with perhaps the most successful being the true crime docuseries Making A Murderer. The award winning series followed the arrest of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey for the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005. Now it seems the piece will finally be given a follow up, but not the way we had expected. Because an an entirely new series is being produced separate from Netflix's series, somewhat hilariously titled Convicting a Murderer.

This new project will be directed by Shawn Rech, who specifically specializes on the genre. Rech is known largely for his work on the documentary A Murder in the Park. The new series will attempt to further expand the story originally told in Netflix's Making a Murderer. Deadline revealed that it will be financed independently, and therefore likely won't be actually affiliated with the original series at all.

Regarding why Steven Avery's arrest and conviction needs further explanation, Shawn Rech explains that one perspective is missing from Making a Murderer: law enforcement.

It looks like Convicting a Murderer will take what's so fascinating about Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey's convictions, and simply expand the scope at which the public is viewing the story. From including the perspective of law enforcement to examining the psychological affects of Avery's time in captivity, the new series is hoping to bring something different than its predecessor.

One has to wonder what Netflix and Making a Murderer's directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos think about this new show. They had reportedly been planning a second season for the series, and have no doubt been watching and working as the events of the past year or so panned out. So another filmmaker to coming in and focusing on their subject might not be exactly welcomed. After all, the show's first season was an Emmy winning success for the streaming service, leading to a bevy of other true crime docuseries.

As Netflix subscribers eagerly await Season 2 of Making A Murderer, headlines are giving clues as to where the next set of episodes will take us. After all, both subjects court cases continue to get exposure. Unfortunately, the news as of late is not promising for currently incarcerated Brendan Dassey, as his case was just hit with some bad news. Following a ruling from the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, it has been stated that Dassey will remain in prison for the murder of Teresa Halbach.

The decision comes from the appeal of the decision to overturn his conviction a year ago on the grounds that Brendan Dassey's confession seen in Making A Murderer was coerced. The vote was very close, as EW reports a panel of judges voted 4 to 3 against Dassey and ruled that his confession obtained by police had been properly obtained. Dassey will continue to serve his life sentence, which was first given to him a decade ago in 2007.

While a majority of Season 1 of Making A Murderer focuses on the trial of Steven Avery, his nephew Brendan Dassey served as a big part of Avery's defense, due to the way in which his confession was obtained and the inconsistencies his story had with actual evidence. Dassey was interviewed by police four times over two days and never had a guardian or lawyer around during the interviews. Additionally, Dassey's initial lawyer in the case was shown to be somewhat working with the prosecution, and attempting to get Dassey to agree with a story that he actively disputed to family and the lawyer. Dassey would also attempt to recant his confession during his initial trial, although his words would ultimately be ignored.

The news on Brendan Dassey comes just two months after Steven Avery was denied a new trial by a Wisconsin judge. With Making A Murderer crews likely following the events and filming every step of the way, it will be interesting to hear Avery and Dassey's thoughts on the process, and what they think since they last talked to the documentary crew. It will also be interesting to see how the phenomena of the show has affected the Avery family, who is the less frequently seen party affected throughout this entire process.

Making A Murderer Season 2 is currently in development and will release on Netflix, but no release date has been given as to when it may arrive. The legal case of Steven Avery made its way into the national spotlight back in 2015 with the debut of the Netflix docu-series Making a Murderer, which chronicled Avery's life before, during, and after he was accused and later convicted of murdering a woman by the name of Teresa Halbach. The series cast doubt on whether Avery had been given a fair trial, and the legal battle is ongoing. Although Avery's request for a new trial was recently denied, his lawyer now claims to have new evidence that could clear Avery of all charges.

Defense attorney Kathleen Zellner filed a motion on behalf of Steven Avery on October 23, requesting that the court reconsider giving Avery a new trial based on new evidence. Newsweek reports that Judge Angela Sutkiewicz originally refused to order a new trial because Avery's lawyer did not sufficiently establish the grounds. Zellner's motion indicates that there is evidence that was not considered at the time when the new trial was denied. According to the court document, a new witness has come forward with information that could change everything.

This new witness allegedly came forward to state that he or she saw Teresa Halbach's car parked at a turnaround on November 4 and 5 in 2005. As this car was found on the Avery property on November 5 and used as evidence that Halbach had been killed by Steven Avery, evidence that it had actually been parked elsewhere could raise reasonable doubt if presented to a jury. According to the motion, the witness reported seeing the car but the police officer did not make an official report.

The new witness is only one reason why Kathleen Zellner argues that Steven Avery needs a new trial to be exonerated. The motion (via Scribd) alleges that forensic testing of the home computer of the Dassey family found images of violent pornography and torture, including images of Teresa Halbach herself and women who resemble Halbach. According to the case presented by Zellner, only Bobby Dassey -- brother of Brendan Dassey whose testimony helped put Avery behind bars -- was home at the time when the images were accessed.

Additionally, Steven Avery's legal team claims that Teresa Halbach's ex-boyfriend may have had a hand in what happened to her. Ryan Hillegas reportedly had Halbach's day planner, which was ultimately passed on to the authorities, although with a page torn out. A friend of Hallbach's evidently stated that she was speaking to Halbach in the morning on the day she died, which is noted in the planner. Kathleen Zelner suggests that the only way Hillegas could have had the planner is if he had been present at the crime scene.

Finally, Steven Avery's lawyer claims that forensic testing casts doubt on earlier findings. For one thing, the bullet fragment that was posited as the one that killed Halbach allegedly does not have any bone particles, although there are wood particles present. Such evidence would suggest that the bullet struck wood rather than the head of a human. Additionally, the motion claims that far too much of Avery's DNA was found on Teresa Halbach's vehicle to have been left by somebody in the heat of a crime. This claim presumably ties into the theory that evidence was planted, as suggested in the Making a Murderer docu-series.

We'll have to wait and see. If the judge decides that there's merit to these claims, Steven Avery's conviction could hypothetically be overturned and his name cleared. Netflix has changed the game for television production. The streaming service allows directors to have more creative control, free of the red tape and advertising limitations that come with network or cable TV. And in addition to producing a ton of scripted content, Netflix has quickly become a hub for both comedy specials and sobering true crime documentaries. This true crime trend began largely with the docu-series Making a Murderer, and was followed up by more horrifying documentaries like The Keepers and recently The Confession Tapes. I recently had the chance to speak with Confession Tapes creator/director Kelly Loudenberg, and asked if a Season 2 might be happening on Netflix. When asked if she'd be interested in another season, she told me:

Although Kelly Loudenberg does seem interested in continuing on with The Confession Tapes, she's certainly a realist. There are a variety of obstacles in the way of a possible sophomore season, making it unclear if the popular docu-series will return.

It appears that the main issue with possibly producing The Confession Tapes Season 2 is the hard evidence. Each episode of the Netflix series opens with the subject's confession, and then backtracks to give context and background surviving the reportedly false convictions. While interrogating officers may have the actual point of confession on tape, they don't always record the full session with the accused. And as such, Kelly Loudenberg has a harder time attempting to tell the full story.

Additionally, Kelly Loudenberg told me how she'd like to see the work of a possible Season 2 spread across more folks. Loudernberg was extremely hands on in The Confession Tapes, serving as the creator, director of each episode, and an executive producer. But because the subject of the series is often so harrowing and challenging to grasp, she'd like some more folks to assume responsibility-- and therefore take on some of the emotional toll of the series.

The Confession Tapes was released in its entirety this past September on Netflix. Each episode follows another alleged false or coerced confession, which resulted in the accused being convicted of murder. The series attempts to shed a light on the flaws in our legal and justice system, specifically through cases that the world had forgotten.

True crime stories have been thrilling audiences over the past few years, and perhaps no TV series illustrates this as much as Netflix's Making A Murderer. The massively popular docu-series was filmed over the course of a decade, and followed the conviction of Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey in the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. Making a Murderer strongly implied that they were both wrongly convicted, leading many to wonder if the new information presented in the documentary will help Avery be released from his life sentence. Avery's lawyers recently appealed for a new trial, a request which was just denied by a Wisconsin judge.

Judge Angela Sutkiewicz failed to see a reason for Steven Avery to receive a new trial for his convictions. Despite the information presented by Avery's representation and the contents of Making a Murderer, the judge believed the legal team failed to "establish any grounds that would trigger the right to a new trial in the interests of justice." As such, the request was denied, providing another speed bump on Avery's quest to clear his name.

That said, Steve Avery's lawyer Kathleen Zellner seems just as determined to get her client out of his current prison sentence. She recently made a statement to The Wrap, indicating that the team will attempt to vacate the judge's order and will continue to fight for Steven Avery's innocence. Her statement also said,

Both Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey's cases have become massively popular since Making a Murderer premiered on Netflix, with many of the streaming service's subscribers following their cases closely. And it does appear that the docu-series has affected its subjects, especially Dassey. Last year, the 27 year old had a big step forward in his quest for freedom. A federal judge in ruled that his confession to Teresa Halbach's murder was coerced, overturning his conviction. But he's currently still in captivity, as the Justice Department appealed this decision. Now he's still waiting, as the state has the options to dismiss the charges, retry Dassey, or take it all the way to the Supreme Court.

Making a Murderer's popularity also affected the way Netflix produced and released more true crime documentaries. True crime series The Keepers became very popular this year, as did the anthology show The Confession Tapes. The producers of Making a Murderer have maintained that they're crafting a second season, although they may be waiting to see how both Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey's proceedings turn out.

It's no secret that Netflix is the perfect place for exciting and original television projects. And in addition to being a home for a myriad of comedy specials and scripted television, the streaming service has also produced a handful of massively popular true crime documentary series. After Making a Murderer captivated its subscribers with the tale of the Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey convictions, Netflix began releasing similar shows around true crimes, and how the legal system can sometimes fail the people. The latest of these is The Confession Tapes. And while the series is fascinating and sometimes hard to watch, it's not exactly binge-worthy. Why? Because each episode revolves around a different case.

Unlike Netflix's other true crime documentaries, The Confession Tapes is kind of like an anthology series. Rather than seven episodes focusing on one specific confession, each episode focuses on another case, location, and conviction. The circumstances are all quite different, but the result is the same: someone confessed to a crime they seemingly did not commit. The series opens with one two-parter, but each following installment follows a different story.

This isn't to say that The Confession Tapes isn't thrilling television. Each story unravels fascinatingly in the one hour episode. But because each episode is unique, it makes it less binge-able. The audience isn't invested in each episode's subject the way that its predecessors allowed Netflix subscribers to feel connected in shows like The Keepers or Making a Murderer.

And the subject matter of Netflix's new docuseries is just as sobering as those other series. Each episode revolves around a murder, and the various ways that a seemingly innocent person ended up confessing to the crime on tape. Each episode opens with said confession, before backtracking and revealing the series of events leading up to, and after, the confession is given.

There are a variety of tactics used to elicit this response. In some cases it involves lying about evidence, making the subject believe that they're definitely going to be convicted, and might get off easier by simply confessing to the crime. In the opening episode(s), we saw an insane collaboration between US and Canadian law enforcement agencies who pulled a months long con. In it, they earned the accused's trust, and seemingly coerced them into confessing to a triple murder.

It should be interesting to see where Netflix goes next with its new trend of true crime documentary shows. Considering each new release usually goes instantly viral among its subscribers, it doesn't seem like things are going to be slowing down. Making a Murderer is planning a second season, so perhaps the other shows will be similarly renewed. We'll just have to see what Netflix is planning.

In a time where true crime docu-series like Making A Murderer are all the rage, Netflix found a way to parody the genre (and itself, to a certain extent) like no one else can. Check out the trailer for the streaming giant's upcoming series American Vandal, which is a hilarious spoof all centered on the damning act of penis graffiti, and find out more about the show below.

American Vandal looks so ridiculous, and yet so well done, it's actually believable. In the age of Catfish and national headlines focused on small town incidents, a docu-series centering on the potentially conspiratorial takedown of a high school buffoon that's ripe with Snapchat and vertical video isn't a stretch for 2017. Add the hashtag "Who drew the dicks," and suddenly the Season 2 premiere date of Making A Murderer doesn't seem quite as pressing as the crazy mystery fans will get into on September 15th.

The laughs from American Vandal's trailer come from familiar names like Tony Yacenda, a CollegeHumor vet, and Dan Perrault, who is one of the creative forces behind the Honest Trailers the internet loves so much. Those trying to put a name to Dylan Maxwell may better know him as YouTube star Jimmy Tatro. Those unfamiliar with Tatro can check out his style of comedy from his YouTube channel Life According To Jimmy:

Take all that internet comedy talent and package in showrunner Dan Lagana from Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous, along with Funny or Die as one of the companies behind it, and it looks like Netflix will have another weiner in its hands, er, winner on its hands, despite clearly taking an indirect stab (all puns intended) at one of the company's hit shows. Anyone behind legit true crime shows like Making A Murderer might not be so thrilled to see serious matters getting parodied in such an immature way, but it seems to be all in good fun. And Netflix has made other attempts beyond American Vandal to try and recapture the tremendous success the series has made with other shows, so it'll be interesting to see how it works with a comedy bent.

As stated earlier, fans of mockumentaries can check out American Vandal when it lands on Netflix beginning September 15th. Anyone in search of something a tad more serious might like revisit that chilling trailer for Mindhunters, which looks as though it'll scratch the genuine crime itch fans of these shows crave. After establishing itself a scripted programming powerhouse, Netflix successfully veered left with Making a Murderer, capitalizing on a growing fascination with true crime, as boosted by the much acclaimed Serial and The Jinx. The company's latest crime-focused effort is the hauntingly powerful The Keepers, which centers on the 47-year-old unsolved murder of a Baltimore Catholic school nun, along with a ring of sexual abuse that allegedly occurred within the school. Creator and documentarian Ryan White recently spoke with CinemaBlend, and when I asked if Making a Murderer and others made him think an audience would definitely be there for The Keepers, he said this:

Ryan White was responsible for such winning documentaries as The Case Against 8, Serena and more, so it's understandable that he came at this project early on with the scope and parameters of a feature film in his mind. That was three years ago, though, at a time when the legwork was certainly being done on Making a Murderer and others, but before U.S. audiences had any idea just how overwhelmed the collective consciousness would get with the stories of Steven Avery, Brendan Dassey, Robert Durst, Adnan Syed and, in a fictional sense, O.J. Simpson again. Once the concept of a quasi-serialized true crime TV show became a viable option for a storytelling avenue, the door was open for The Keepers to take over anyone with justice on the brain.

Of course, it wasn't merely the existence of Making a Murderer that formed The Keepers as it stands today, since Ryan White probably wasn't super-focused on checking out all kinds of other programming involving murders while putting this series together. White told me he and producer Jessica Hargrave traveled to and from Baltimore two weeks out of every month during the three years when The Keepers was coming together. Upon viewing, audiences will see just how wide the story expands surrounding the late Sister Cathy Cesnik and the former "Jane Doe" that serves as the lynch pin for unraveling the sordid history of Baltimore's Archbishop Keough High School. So while White had at one point conceived The Keepers to fill a runtime befitting of a film, there were just too many stories and victims to fit into a set time limit.

As Ryan White put it during our interview, he's used to crafting beginnings, middles and endings for documentaries, but he had a combined 21 of them with The Keepers. And every one of them was worth the filmmaking efforts to get these tragic stories out there, regardless of what led to its release. He says as much below.

As it happened with Making a Murderer's Brendan Dassey, one would hope that The Keepers will inspire a similar launch to bring justice to Cathy Cesnik, Jane Doe and everyone else whose nightmares were kept silent for decades. You can check out the trailer below.

While the story of Sister Cathy Cesnik in The Keepers may be fresh to the majority of Netflix viewers, the murder remains a relatively high-profile mystery to this day in Baltimore. Cesnik was a drama and English teacher at Archbishop Keough school in the 1960's who was found murdered on the outer limits of Baltimore in 1969. As the trailer states, there is an official record of what is known about the death of Sr. Cesnik, but there's also a different story that folks have been working to uncover ever since. The Keepers will look to tell that alternate story when it premieres its seven-part docuseries in May, and that will hopefully lead to more answers regarding the mystery behind the brutal and thoughtless murder of a well-liked member of the community.

Those answers will likely dig up some less than savory truths regarding the Catholic church in Baltimore, as one popular belief is that Sister Cathy Cesnik was murdered to protect that secrecy of an underage molestation ring within the school she taught at. Decades after the murder, former women students came forward with allegations pointing to a specific employee at the school, saying he sexually abused them and other students attending the school. In total, various reports say there are around 50 alleged victims from around the time before and after Sr. Cesnik's death, although the trailer alludes to a number closer to 100. The Keepers producers appear to have more information about these claims, and may present more evidence that could potentially lead to the Baltimore police department finally closing the nearly 50-year-old murder case. The school Cesnik taught at, Archbishop Keough, merged with another high school in 1988 and is now set for closure this June.

Expect morbid curiosity and sadness to run high as Netflix jumps into the world of The Keepers on Friday, May 19th, at 12:01 a.m. PT. While there was a lot to get pumped about when Netflix first announced Making a Murderer was becoming a thing, it's hard to believe anyone could have predicted how wildly popular the show would be. Fans have been waiting patiently for movement on Season 2, and Netflix is looking to sate everyone's true crime interests by ordering up a docu-series that will center on a mysterious and still-unsolved death from almost 50 years ago. This new project will have the creepier and much less on-the-nose title The Keepers.

You may be somewhat familiar with the mystery at the center of The Keepers, as it made the national rounds back in 2015 after a Huffington Post story reinvigorated interest in the cold case. Here is the CliffsNotes version, as not to go too hard on details before everyone can binge-watch. Back in 1969, a popular and well-respected 26-year-old nun named Sister Cathy Cesnik went out to go shopping in Baltimore and she vanished. Her body was found a week later, but that discovery went unreported, and Cesnik's body then went two months before being officially found by hunters in a dump outside of town. There were signs of violence, and it was determined she was murdered, but no one was ever charged.

Across seven episodes, The Keepers will delve deeper into the life of Cathy Cesnik in a broad way, according to People. As well, it will put a spotlight on some of Baltimore's darker secrets, which may have played a part in her initial disappearance and eventual murder. Ryan White, the documentarian who helmed Serena and The Case Against 8, will be behind it, and he's no doubt hoping this case will experience the same kind of legal attention that Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey's trails did when Making a Murderer was released.

As depressing as the subject matter obviously is, it should be plainly obvious why Netflix believes its millions of subscribers will be interested in discovering more about Sister Cathy Cesnik. This murder took place long before the central crimes at the head of Making a Murderer, but it also has a committed group of people determined to find the truth and bring justice to the slain nun. The case definitely hasn't sat gathering dust over the years, and has been reopened a time or two when new evidence has surfaced by way of new witness testimonials and updated persons of interest.

Netflix also hasn't left its true crime customers high and dry in the time since Making a Murderer debuted. We've gotten to watch the controversial Amanda Knox case get explored with an original documentary feature, and a handful of harrowing kidnapping cases were the focus of the docu-series Captive. But The Keepers will be the first season-length look at a real-life crime since Murderer started making headlines.

No time table is set at this point for when Netflix might bring The Keepers to audiences, but a trailer is reportedly dropping this week, so a release date may come forth soon. If a single pop culture moment defined the last year, it had to be Netflix's Making A Murderer. The true crime documentary about Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey's alleged murder of Teresa Halbach has become one of the streaming service's most talked about shows, with fans clamoring for a follow-up. Although a second season is definitely on the way sometime this year, it seems that it won't be ready until series creators Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi are willing to release it. Netflix Vice President of original content Cindy Holland explained:

Cindy Holland recently spoke to USA Today about the current status of Making A Murderer's second season, but her comments don't provide us with too much concrete information about the future of the series. All she was able to confirm is the fact that new episodes are going to debut within the year. Progress is being made on the production side, but shooting an ongoing story in real time presents its own set of challenges. The first season of the hit documentary series had the advantage of flying under the radar, which meant that Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi could take their time on the show. Now that the true crime series has become a genuine success, all eyes are on them to follow it up with something equally compelling.

Of course, we shouldn't expect the second season of Making A Murderer to feel identical to the original installment of the series. Moira Demos herself recently came out and admitted that the creative team behind the show would have to pursue a different means of telling Steven Avery's story in Season 2. They focused on on decades worth of material in the first season, and now it's all about everything that has happened since Season 1.

Even though the second installment of Making A Murderer is still probably a long way off, its impact on pop culture remains as powerful and poignant as ever. The series is partially responsible for the recent true crime genre boom, and many well-known pop culture institutions -- such as The Simpsons and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia -- have already committed to making their own respective spoofs of the series. We will likely see that trend continue once Season 2 debuts and the hype continues over the course of the next year.

For 28 seasons, Matt Groening's classic FOX cartoon has pulled apart and examined pretty much every film and TV show in the book. Based on this clip, it seems that Itchy will finally have to pay for his crimes after years of murdering Scratchy with impunity on a regular basis. The segment mirrors the opening sequence of Netflix's hit documentary series, Making A Murderer, complete with ominous theme song, and a dramatic recreation of Itchy's family photos. Following the parody of the Making A Murderer credits sequence, the clip cuts to a typical Itchy & Scratchy segment, in which the terminally gullible cat gets butchered by the mouse at a meat stand. As you can probably imagine, Bart and Lisa Simpson can't get enough of the carnage from the safety of their couch.

Itchy is going to need nothing short of a miracle to get himself out of this particular jam. Let's hope that he can get lawyer/Making A Murderer sensation Dean Strang on the phone at some point.

Absolutely no fan of The Simpsons should be surprised by this particular segment. For years the FOX cartoon has slowly but surely carved out a niche as one of the most biting sources of satire and parody currently available on television. From classic movies, to recent TV sensations, the writers and animators at The Simpsons have proven time and time again that they have no problem dissecting pop culture, and filtering it through the lens of the long-running cartoon. Having said that, it's actually fairly impressive that The Simpsons managed to get a Making A Murderer parody out for audiences this quickly -- even if it's a brief segment. It's a well-established fact that episodes of The Simpsons can easily take longer than a year to produce, and Making A Murderer only became a worldwide phenomenon last December. That's a fairly quick turnaround, even by The Simpsons' standards.

If anyone ever tells you that watching TV won't do you any good, then you tell that person the small screen can change lives, as evidenced by a federal court recently overturning the murder conviction of Brendan Dassey, one of the subjects in the wildly acclaimed Netflix docuseries Making a Murderer. If you binged on the series like millions of others, you witnessed the questionable legal counsel of one Len Kachinsky, who served as Dassey's first lawyer for a short time. Kachinsky was surprised to hear about the conviction reversal, but he was apparently quick to take partial credit for it once he found out why it happened.

Brendan Dassey's murder charge was flipped by U.S. Magistrate Judge William Duffin, whose reasoning behind the decision was based on Dassey's confession to police, one of the most talked about incidents from Making a Murderer, as well as within the series itself. Duffin ruled that the investigators coaxed an involuntary confession out of the young and intellectually challenged boy by lying to him about how the confession would affect his life. The entirety of Dassey's "admissions" to the officers described an insanely gory murder plot (possibly taken out of a James Patterson book) that didn't match up with the crime scene.

At that time, Len Kachinsky was the one who approved that then-16-year-old Dassey could be interrogated without any legal representation present, which was another oft-referenced part of Making a Murderer. He was taken off the case for it, and later had to take the stand to explain his actions. So it's kind of odd that Kachinsky is telling news channel WBAY in Wisconsin that doing his job eventually got Dassey's case overturned, when Dassey possibly wouldn't have had to deal with any of this had a lawyer accompanied him for the interrogations. (Insert Kermit meme.)

Kachinsky did say that he tried to keep that confession out of evidence during the trial, but that obviously didn't happen. He also says he expects the prosecution to file an appeal over this overturning, which he's not alone in.

We can probably expect to see Len Kachinsky again in the future, as Making a Murderer Season 2 is happening. The show's creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have also responded to the ruling, saying that they'll be documenting all of this as it happens, just like the did the first time around. Will we get to a point where the main defendant Steven Avery also gets his case reversed? It's happened in the past...

Netflix's Making a Murderer captivated the nation, with people consuming in the story of Steven Avery and the possible mishandling of his case when he was convicted of murder in 2005. His nephew Brendan Dassey was also a subject of the documentary series, and was sentenced to 41 years in prison on charges of first-degree intentional homicide. That conviction was recently overturned by a judge, and now the directors and executive producers have weighed on that recent development.

Earlier this week, a federal judge overturned Brendan Dassey's conviction in the murder of Teresa Halbach. Dassey was a subject of Making a Murderer, a 10 part documentary series that followed his uncle Steven Avery and the two different murder cases he was convicted of. Dassey was tried as an accomplice in the second case for the murder of Teresa Halbach and was sentenced to 41 years in prison when he was 16 years old; he'll be 27 this October. Making a Murderer examined the case and theorized that local law enforcement may have tampered with the evidence and forced a confession from Dassey. If the state chooses not to retry him then Dassey will be free in 90 days. According to Variety, co-director and creators of the series Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have released a statement about the Dassey's possible release.

Making a Murderer was renewed by Netflix for a Season 2 shortly after the series premiere. Season 2 is planned to follow the post-conviction process and the emotional toll it had on the defendants and their family. It's hard to imagine that this latest news won't be a major focus in Season 2, no matter how it eventually plays out. There is no stated correlation between the overturned conviction and the documentary series, though one has to wonder if the spike in national attention to the case is what caused the judge to re-examine the conviction.

This is no doubt a major development to fans of the documentary series who devoured the 10 episode series. People have been so enamored with Steven Avery's case that some signed a petition to the White House demanding that President Obama pardon Avery and Dassey. However, The President was unable to issue a pardon due to the fact that both of them were state prisoners.

TV audiences' obsession with true crime stories has been making a serious resurgence lately. In addition to the wildly popular podcast Serial, Netflix cashed in and the documentary series Making A Murderer took TV viewers by storm. The story revolving around the murder of Tessa Halbach and the seemingly shady conviction of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey captivated America, and only gained more notoriety since Avery and his nephew continued attempting to have their convictions overturned. Now it appears that exact goal has become a reality.

Steven Avery's nephew Brendan Dassey's conviction has just been overturned, and there is a distinct possibility that the 26 year old may be walking out of captivity in as soon as 90 days. Dassey's conviction was just overturned by a Judge in a Milwaukee court. According to E! News, court documents state that Brendan should be released from custody at the 90 day period, unless the State decides to retry him. If that were to happen, Dassey would remain in custody while the retrial is underway.

This announcement is sure to mind-blowing for those who watched Making A Murderer. Much of the narrative of the documentary series focused on the idea that the arrest, trial, and conviction of Brendan Dassey and Steven Avery was corrupt or mishandled. Brendan Dassey's story was told through video of his police interrogation, his phone calls with his mother while in captivity, and tapes from the actual trials.

Throughout the Netflix series, it certainly seems as though Brendan Dassey didn't know what he was confessing to when he initially stated that he and his Uncle sexually assaulted and murdered Tessa Halbach. Dassey was reportedly interrogated four times over two days, and never had a parent, guardian, or lawyer present during the proceedings. The series also heavily implied that Dassey was academically a bit behind his peers, which, in addition to the exhaustion of his interrogation, may have resulted in his false confession. In fact, Dassey later attempted to recant his confession in front of a judge during his original trial.

Of course, the Judge's overturning of Brenda Dassey's conviction doesn't necessarily mean he will be able to easily begin his life as a free man. Because the Dassey/Avery case has gained so much notoriety due to the popularity of Making A Murderer, it's distinctly possible that the state will request a retrial. If those involved in his original conviction truly believe that Dassey was guilty, they very well may continue the legal battle to keep him behind bars.

Then again, if Brendan Dassey was brought back to court it would become a massively watched trial. The tons of people who watched Making A Murderer will surely be paying attention and making their own judgements, so it could quickly become a spectacle and magnifying glass on the legal system. If there's one thing that The People Vs. O.J. Simpson has reminded us of, it's just how quickly the country can obsess over a high-profile murder trial. So now the state of Wisconsin will have to decide whether or not to bring the fiasco back to their doors.

Making a Murderer was a huge hit of a docu-series for Netflix that has garnered a handful of Emmy nominations and a widespread desire for more. Subscribers everywhere tuned in to follow the cases of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey and decide for themselves whether or not the two men had really experienced justice in the court system. Folks are divided on what the evidence really says about their trials. Like Season 1, Season 2 will include perspectives from the families and friends of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey in addition to the legal particulars. The emotional toll on the people in their lives helped to make the cases feel very real and relatable rather than just the subjects of another cut-and-dried documentary. The story will be different, but important narrative elements will be the same to take viewers back to the world of Steven Avery, Brendan Dassey, and the reach of law enforcement in their native Manitowoc County in Wisconsin.

Documentaries aren't always the sort of productions that get sequels, but a Season 2 for Making a Murderer isn't a huge surprise. The story of Season 1 didn't come to a very satisfactory conclusion without resolution on the cases of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey. Moira Demos had already spoken about one of the major directions that a second season would take, saying that the chapter would examine how the 24-hour news cycle zeitgeist affects how people consume and interpret media. Fans of Season 1 should rest easy knowing that they won't have to go forever without getting an in-depth look at what happens next for Avery and Dassey.

One person who probably won't be resting easy at all is former prosecutor Ken Kratz, who has faced harassment in the wake of Making a Murderer for his role in putting Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey behind bars. It's gotten pretty ugly ever since the series debuted in December 2015, although Kratz maintains that it misrepresented key facts of the cases. Of course, one juror coming forward with a new perspective on the Avery trial probably hasn't happened Kratz' argument with some of the public, and Avery himself put forward a theory about who could have really killed Teresa Halbach.

The true crime genre has experienced a serious shot of adrenaline over the last couple of years. From True Detective to The People v. OJ Simpson, television series inspired by real life crimes have become incredibly common and popular. One series that has taken this concept to infuriating lengths is Netflix's Making A Murderer. The story revolved around Steven Avery's alleged murder of Teresa Halbach, and the creative forces behind the series have some serious plans to evolve the show for its next season.

Speaking with Deadline about Making A Murderer's success and follow-up season, writer and director Moira Demos explained that finding a way to properly tell Steven Avery's continuously evolving story represents the show's next major hurdle. She said:

The first season of Making A Murderer really represented an entirely different type of project because very few people outside of Manitowoc County really had any serious awareness of the Steven Avery case. Now that Making A Murderer has become a major phenomenon around the world, the filmmakers have to find a way to evolve the format of the series. The original installment of the hugely successful series took a decade to properly assemble and put together. With that in mind, it seems that release format of Making A Murderer will have to be changed to reflect real time in order to make a proper second season even feasible.

Making A Murderer became a complete sensation last year when it premiered on Netflix. Chronicling the story of Steven Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey through their trial and conviction for the murder of Teresa Halbach, the show becomes one of the most infuriating documentaries ever to debut on the the streaming platform. Although plenty of people have come forward to assert that Making A Murderer does not present enough compelling arguments to exonerate Avery or Dassey for the crime, few people can argue against the fact that the show chronicles a crazy miscarriage of justice with regards to the lack of fairness in either man's trial. Avery continues his fight to get his conviction overturned, and we as an audience continue to watch in awe.

One thing is for sure: a second season of Making A Murderer means that we will likely continue furiously scratching our heads. Every year brings the announcement of the latest batch of Emmy Award nominees, and every batch of nominees brings the joy of favorites getting recognized and the pain of others being ignored. And while we can make the sportsman's claim that all nominees are winners in a way, there was one really obvious victor by the time all was said and done: the little streaming service that could, Netflix. (Also Laurie Metcalf, who totally rocked it this year, but mainly Netflix.)

The Emmys used to be a broadcast network's time to shine, with HBO leading cable's upward push some years back. This is just the fourth year that Netflix's original programming has been around, however, and each year has brought more critical acclaim and recognition than the last, with this year earning more than ever before, in seemingly every category that doesn't involve limited series and children's programming. And in all the usual major categories, only the Supporting Actress categories were free from Netflix shows.

We'll get to the repeat nominees in a sec, but let's take a moment to pump our fists for all of the new Netflix shows that got honored with nominations, as that is the real proof that the service's programming will continue to build its stronghold on the awards sector. Master of None, seen above, was particularly deserving of its Oustanding Comedy Series nod, as well as those for co-creator Aziz Ansari for Lead Actor, Directing and Writing. The true crime phenomenon Making a Murderer landed six nominations, with Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series as the obvious standout. (Season 2 of Chef's Table also made it into that category's finalists.)

The documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? also received six nominations. Narcos got three, Jessica Jones got two, Even Sense8 picked up a nod for its main title music. And that's not to mention the comedy specials and other one-off programs that were recognized.

That calls for a big glass of pinot noir, doesn't it? No, not that kind, second-time Emmy nominee Tituss Burgess.

And what about all of the Netflix shows, along with their casts and crews, that were nominated for second, third and fourth times? As you might have expected, House of Cards dominated on that front, with nominations dropping for most actors and creative aspects. Orange is the New Black was all but ignored with just a casting nod, surprisingly, but other shows like Bloodline (Lead and Supporting nods for Kyle Chandler and Ben Mendelsohn, respectively) and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Comedy Series, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Casting) shined. You know Daredevil's stunts got honored as well. And, of course, the esteemed Lily Tomlin received her second nomination for her stellar work on Grace and Frankie.

True crime stories have always been popular in American culture, and in the past year, TV has gifted us with The Jinx and Making a Murderer, both true crime narratives that have brought awareness to the genre, as well as invested a ton of people into unique cases. Making a Murderer just dropped this past December, and people have been heavy on the Steven Avery train ever since. In fact, interest is so high that Making a Murderer may end up getting a second season. 

Speaking at a recent IFC Center panel, Making A Murderer directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos spoke about filming Season 2 of Making A Murderer. While Netflix hasn’t officially picked up the second installation of the drama, the two directors revealed they have already talked to Stephen Avery’s lawyer about filming some more footage. According to Variety, the two filmmakers are also interested in exploring what happens to Brendan Dassey, who is currently in prison for confessing to taking part in the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005. Here’s what Laura Ricciardi specifically had to say:

Honestly, when I first heard this Making A Murderer news, I assumed a second season would include a separate individual and a separate case, but the directors of the original installation clearly feel there is plenty of story left to tell involving both Stephen Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey. Honestly, you should always go where the story is, and if the story is a continuation of the original Making A Murderer, at least we know people are already invested in the case. 

According to reports, it took roughly 10 years for the original Making A Murderer to come together from the germ of an idea to the actual release. Now that Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos already have access to the major players in the case and have the outline of the story down, presumably a second season would not take quite that long to come together. Still, if Netflix eventually says yes to a second season, I’m guessing it would be some time before fans would get to actually see Season 2. 

Luckily, Netflix doesn’t seem to be slowing down in terms of new programming. In 2016, Netflix has plans to double its originals. Some of them are on the way shortly. You can check out the upcoming Netflix premiere schedule, here.

Netflix’s Making a Murderer has inspired a lot of conversation about the case of convicted murderer Steven Avery. After watching the show, many people have become convinced that he was framed for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Since many are siding with the defense in the case, that means that they’ve made villains of the prosecutor and law enforcement who worked to put Avery in prison, and they are not being quiet about it at all.

The internet has vilified the law enforcement officers involved with the case beyond nasty (but sometimes funny) memes, and (as people of the internet so often do) made things personal and taken their dislike of those public officials way too far. Ken Kratz, the special prosecutor for the case, has told an interviewer with Gothamist, Jena Friedman, that viewers of the documentary have actually gotten his phone number and started leaving messages that would make the toughest of lawyers think twice about leaving work alone. In the beginning of their taped interview you can see Kratz hold up his phone for Friedman, so she can read what people are telling him. That text message read, “Do you understand how much of a piece of shit you are? You fat fuck, with low self-esteem.”

Those angry with Ken Kratz have taken things even further now. A report from BuzzFeed, via News.Mic, notes that people are attacking his new business, as a private practice defense attorney. These people are taking their ire to Yelp in the hope that everyone will know how awful they believe Kratz to be. One comment read: “I have never wished death on anyone in all the years I have had on this earth. But after seeing how you treat people, I got pretty darn close. I hope that you get an incurable STD and spend the rest of your short life in constant misery, you fat sloth.”

The harassment doesn’t end with Ken Kratz, either. A recent story in the USA Today Network-Wisconsin says that they have received a letter from Lt. Andrew Colborn, one of the law enforcement officers on the 2005 case, berating reporter John Ferak for publishing enough information to lead people to former lieutenant James Lenk, another police officer who worked to arrest and prosecute Steven Avery. His letter points to the fact that Lenk has not been involved with the series and has moved away from the county in Wisconsin where the case was tried. His letter admonished the reporter with a succinct “you should be ashamed of yourself.”

There’s certainly been no denying that viewers are racking up some strong opinions about the Steven Avery case since the Netflix series debuted last month. But, the harassment of those involved with putting him behind bars goes, obviously, several steps too far. Whichever side you take on the Making a Murderer fence, let’s all hope that mean letters, emails and phone messages are as far as this goes.

The documentary Making A Murderer has become a hit for streaming service Netflix since it debuted a month ago. People are riveted by the true crime aspect and have become engrossed in the story of convicted murderer Steven Avery, and many people are starting to believe he was wrongly convicted. But, the show has also received flack for not putting forth a lot of evidence that led to his prison sentence in the first place. Now, Netflix has a response to those claims.

Speaking during a panel at the Television Critics Association gathering, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos threw down his gauntlet to those blaming the series for making convicted felon Steven Avery seem to have been wrongly imprisoned for murder by leaving out evidence that supports the conviction, according to The Wrap, which reported on the event.

Making A Murderer centers on Steven Avery and his case. Avery first spent 18 years in prison for a sexual assault which, it turns out, he didn’t actually commit. He was released for that crime in 2003. About two years later, photographer Teresa Halbach came to his family’s auto salvage business to photograph a vehicle for her job at Auto Trader Magazine. Avery was charged with her murder and convicted.

One of the people who’s not a fan of the way the series paints the case, is prosecutor Ken Kratz, who helped put Steven Avery behind bars for a life sentence. The documentary has been known to paint the prosecutor and law enforcement team who worked the case in a negative light, leading to people’s idea that they railroaded the Wisconsin man. Kratz has called Making A Murderer “a perfectly good conspiracy movie” that isn’t truly concerned with what really happened while they were making the case against Avery. Other people featured in the documentary, as well as outsiders, have voiced similar concerns.

But, the people who are beginning to believe that Steven Avery was framed, have noted that a vial of Avery’s blood appeared to have been tampered with after it was logged into evidence. That same segment of the public doubt the confession of Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey, who was also charged with first degree murder, believing that he was coerced.

Whatever your thoughts on the actual case, Making A Murderer presents a good example of how to get people talking about a documentary. Some would say that it’s poor form on the part of the filmmakers to appear to be taking sides, but, considering the way they’ve made law enforcement look, it certainly seems that they have definite opinions surrounding the case. Either way, Ted Sarandos is right, you’ll have to watch for yourself and make your own decision.

Netflix's smash hit true crime docu-series Making a Murderer is as troubling as it is compelling due to the exposé of Wisconsinite Steven Avery’s legal cases that first had him wrongfully imprisoned for nearly 20 years, and then had him back in jail for life for murdering photographer Teresa Halbach. Avery has maintained his innocence in the latter case all along, and now, he alleges that he knows the true identity of Halbach's murderer: his brother, Charles Avery.

According to documents obtained by TMZ, Steven Avery claims that his brother Charles has a history of aggression toward women who visited the junkyard owned by the Avery family. The documents state that Charles would pursue women to their homes and seek intimate contact to the extent that they would fear for their safety. One woman allegedly complained to law enforcement that Charles sent inappropriate gifts, called her over and over again, and showed up at her doorstep.

Interestingly, the timing of the events asserted in Steven Avery’s documents would place them within a month of the date that Teresa Halbach went missing after her visit to the junkyard. Steven furthermore asserts that Charles’ criminal conduct with regard to his wife in the past has set precedent for violence against women.

Of course, even if Charles is guilty of crimes against Teresa Halbach, there is the question of how so much evidence was accumulated against Steven. According to Steven, Charles had the motive to frame him so as to remove him as a contender for taking over the family business. Jealousy that he was also on the verge of a multi-million dollar reparation settlement for his wrongful imprisonment is also cited as a factor for Charles having motive to frame his brother.

Steven Avery alleging his brother’s guilt for the murder of Teresa Halbach is just one more wrinkle to the case. Steven’s nephew Brendan Dassey came forward prior to Steven’s conviction and claimed that Steven had forced him into assaulting and helping to kill Halbach. The veracity of Dassey’s claims, which he later retracted, has been called into question thanks to the questionable tactics police used in interrogations and his own frequent re-telling of his tale, as well as the motives of Dassey's own appointed defense team. If Charles is indeed guilty as Steven alleges, the case against Brendan Dassey would be seriously affected as well.

There’s no way to say for sure at this point if Steven Avery is correct in his allegations against his brother. Making a Murderer did an effective job of creating reasonable doubt in Steven’s guilt for Teresa Halbach’s murder, but the docu-series undoubtedly did not lay out the whole story. As of now, the allegations against Charles Avery are no more than allegations. Only time will tell if Steven’s accusations amount to enough to change his fate in prison.

As new crimes are happening every day all over the U.S., there are a lot of people mentally focused on one that’s over a decade old, and it’s all thanks to Netflix’s absolutely engrossing docuseries Making a Murderer. Ever since its premiere last month, the series has made headlines all over the place, both in support of its harsh view of the criminal justice system, and in defense of that same system. Now, new claims have surfaced from one of the jurors in Steven Avery’s trial that enforce the doc’s general presumption that Avery was framed for everything.

The juror, whose identity is obviously being kept under wraps, got in touch with Making a Murderer’s creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, and the duo made the announcement this morning on NBC’s Today.

That’s about as damning as it gets, and seems to support a large part of the defense’s angling during Avery’s trial. A lot of attention was given to the officers involved with the case, particularly those from Avery’s own Manitowoc County that weren’t supposed to have anything to do with the investigation, and the possibility that evidence was planted and tampered with by those seeking revenge against Avery for making the cops look bad after his initial wrongful conviction and subsequent lawsuit.

The biggest question that spawns from this claim obviously centers on why that juror would have put in a guilty vote, and the filmmakers say it was an issue of personal safety for the juror. According to the Today segment, the juror was under duress during the deliberation, and the claim was also made that “trading votes” occurred, where jurors agreed to vote one way on a specific charge and another way for another charge. It makes my head hurt to think that this was supposed to be a jury of his “peers.”

It’s also not the only time a juror came forward to talk about what went on in there. Richard Mahler, who was excused from jury duties after a family emergency, spoke with the filmmakers on the series itself about how horrible he feels that Avery got a guilty verdict, saying that there were initially more jurors that believed he was innocent than the other way around. Not much can be done about that now, but many viewers are trying to get some other conclusion in motion, whether it be a pardon or a new trial in a different location, while the much maligned former prosecutor Ken Kratz is baffled that people are being so swayed by what he says is a biased documentary.

Back when Netflix first announced that Making a Murderer was coming, I assumed it would be as thrilling as any of the streaming service’s other series, but I never could have guessed that it would take the nation by storm in such a big way. How do you guys feel about this new information, if it is indeed legitimate?

Following Netflix’s release of the documentary series Making A Murderer, prosecutor Ken Kratz was forced to deal with a lot of flack from people on the Internet after the documentary painted a negative picture of the lawyer and the law enforcement who prosecuted Steven Avery for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Now, the man is coming out swinging, saying that those who watched Making A Murderer really don’t have all of the facts. Here’s what he had to say in a recent email:

Writing to People, Ken Kratz alleges that the evidence the police had at the time was sound, including finding a vial of Avery’s blood under the hood of Halbach's car. In addition, Kratz says that phone evidence and ballistics evidence is unswayable.

If you haven’t seen Making a Murderer, you probably have no idea what Kratz is going on about, but here’s what happened. Avery spent 18 years in prison for a sexual assault conviction he didn’t commit. He was released in 2003. Avery then sued the government for wrongful conviction, wanting $36 million for his troubles. Soon after (in 2005), a woman named Teresa Halbach would visit the Avery family business, Avery Auto Salvage, in order to take a picture of a Plymouth Voyager minivan for her job at Auto Trader Magazine. Avery was later charged with the woman’s murder for all of the reasons that Kratz is alleging.

The counterargument, and the one that Making A Murderer makes, says that the law enforcement who was on the case may have planted evidence in order to frame Steven Avery. (That vial of Avery's blood, for example, appeared to have been tampered with by someone after it was logged into evidence.) Other complaints relate to Avery’s nephew Brendan Dassey, who was also charged with first-degree murder, and many have questioned if his confessions shown on the documentary were coerced through bad methods.

Earlier this week, Anonymous even got in on this debate, noting that Avery may be innocent. The group has come across some evidence supporting the fact that Steven Avery may be innocent this time around, too. Reportedly documents supporting this theory will be released soon.

Whatever ends up happening, I think we can all agree that the evidence, the circumstances and the prisoner central to Making a Murderer make for an intense and insane case. If you haven't caught it on Netflix, you should definitely give it a watch.

Ostensibly, the series is about Steven Avery, a small town native who spent 18 years in jail for a crime he didn’t commit and then later got sent back to prison for another grisly crime. It paints a very negative picture of the law enforcement and court officials involved with both cases, and one prosecutor has been majorly harassed and threatened since the show was released.

Ken Kratz was the special prosecutor for Avery’s case from 2005-2007, in which the Manitowoc County resident was charged and convicted of the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Avery’s nephew Brendan Dassey was also charged with being a party to first-degree murder, although his “guilt” has been contested by many due to the troublesome methods used to draw a confession out of him. And hundreds of people are coming after Kratz for both Avery and Dassey, Here’s what people were saying, according to Fox 11.

Those are clearly hateful comments, although in this Age of the Internet, they sadly aren’t all that surprising. And in case his comments weren’t specific enough for you, the critical masses have also come out to antagonize the prosecutor on his law firm’s Yelp page.

Yelp itself has a message set up saying they will be going through the comments, excising those that are reacting only to recent news and not personal experience with the firm. Of the dozens of negative “reviews” there, many criticize Kratz for putting innocent people in jail, as well as the man’s own troubled past, in which he resigned after a scandal revealed he’d sent explicit text messages to a domestic violence victim whose case he was prosecuting. But then there were some plainly damning things like this.

And then there were the Yelpers that chose not to be directly malicious, but rather to spin some irony out of it all.

Kratz claims that the creator/producers of Making a Murderer, Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, never got in touch with him to give him an opportunity to give his side of the story, although both women claim they did. Kratz also wants Netflix to provide some kind of an opportunity for his side to be told, saying that he believes “80 to 90 percent of the physical evidence, the forensic evidence, that ties Steven Avery to this murder never to have been presented in this documentary.” That’s probably not going to happen, though, so Kratz may be experiencing this kind of backlash for as long as there are people who believe Avery is an innocent man.

Today is the day that Netflix put out its first true crime docu-series Making a Murderer, and there’s a damned good chance that anyone who starts watching will be finished with it by the time the weekend is over, especially if those people are fans of recent projects such as HBO’s The Jinx and the podcast Serial. I’m not willing to say that on the record, though, because I’m currently as unnerved by the criminal justice system as can be.

Even though the holidays are admittedly not an ideal time to devote attention to heinous crimes and the equally heinous way those crimes are handled, here are three big reasons why you need to start watching Making a Murderer immediately. Consider it a present to yourself. Vague spoilers about the series and the real-life events are below.

The Central Cases are Insane

Making a Murderer is predominantly centered on Steven Avery, a not-exactly-prize citizen of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. In 1985, when Avery was a 23-year-old husband and father, he was arrested and convicted for a selection of crimes, one of which was the rape of a certain woman. Avery claimed innocence in the rape case for many years, and he was eventually released in 2003 after evidence was reviewed and put to better use by the Innocence Project. But there is no happily ever after, as the two years following his release involved a whole lot of hindsight-attention paid to how bungled Avery’s investigation was. And just when it looked like Avery was about to get his own slice of justice, he’s suddenly arrested for another grisly crime, once again claiming he had nothing to do with it. But did he?

It’s One of the Densest TV Shows Out There

While The Jinx was intentionally polished by director Andrew Jarecki, and Serial was intentionally subjective thanks to host Sarah Koenig, Making a Murderer’s filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos are almost too intent on keeping their opinions and input out of the docuseries, instead offering up a vast abundance of footage and audio to tell this sordid tale. The duo first got invested in the case in 2005, and they’ve spent the last decade compiling everything imaginable to get this story told, and that includes news coverage from both cases, interviews with different members of the Avery family (including his depressingly dedicated mother), deposition videos from police and other officials from Manitowoc County, telephone conversations, photographs and much more. All that means Avery doesn’t become a central character as Robert Durst and Adnan Syed did – which is fine – and that helps to keep viewers somewhat objective as they watch.

You Will Feel Almost Every Emotion While Watching

As Making a Murderer unravels its many layers, viewers will undoubtedly run the emotional gamut, which also helps to keep judgment on Avery and everyone else constantly in flux. (Okay, if we’re being honest, the “mirth” side of the emotional scale is absent.) There’s the aggravation-turned-rage that comes along with watching the police indignantly ignore anything that doesn’t fit their own preconceived idea of what happened, and the arguable coercions that occur. There’s the disgust-turned-despair that comes as Making a Murderer makes it clear this is a case that relies on class issues and rampant bias as much as tangible evidence and proof. There’s also confusion, helplessness, empathy, horror, incredulity and everything else you can imagine attached to a story that involves more than 30 years of details. Similar to the West Memphis Three documentaries, Making a Murdererconstantly makes you aware of how close we all might be from a possibly wrongful conviction.

All 10 episodes of Making a Murderer are currently available for streaming on Netflix. There are definitely far more than just three reasons why you should be watching, but I didn’t want to stand in your way any longer.

In the past year or so, the entertainment world has found a new love for the true crime genre, with the podcast Serial becoming an instant classic while HBO’s The Jinx was an intoxicatingly mysterious look into the life and crimes of Robert Durst. Now Netflix is joining the party, and it has added to its library the docu-series Making a Murderer, which is based on one of the craziest criminal cases to ever exist.

Making a Murderer will be focused on the complicated story of the seemingly troubled Steven Avery, who was arrested at 23 years old for several crimes, including the rape of a woman, in 1985. Avery spent the next 18 years in jail, some of it for those non-rape crimes, and was then released, only to go right back to jail. As a life-based spoiler alert, if you have no idea who Steven Avery is, and you want to go into this future series as clueless as possible, go ahead and skip the two paragraphs after the snazzy looking official poster below.

It was revealed in 2005 through DNA evidence and the efforts of the Wisconsin Innocence Project that Avery was not guilty of the sexual assault at all. And after getting out of jail, he and his lawyers popped a huge lawsuit against the town and its lawmakers. Good times, right?

Well, his case did get a new bill passed by state legislatures to avoid wrongful convictions, and it was called the Avery Bill temporarily. On the downside, it happened to coincide with the disappearance of photographer Teresa Halbach, who was never seen again after she left to go and meet Avery regarding photos of a vehicle. Avery was charged with her murder in October of 2005, and found guilty 16 months later, thereafter sentenced to life without parole. Since then, work has been done to get an appeal, but it has all been unsuccessful as of now.

Putting Making a Murderer together are directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, who have been building up the project for the last decade, tackling the facts from all angles and pointing a spotlight at the investigations for both of Avery’s cases. Because of Avery’s criminal troubles in the past, his reputation played a role in the accusations against him, and I’m assuming that’ll be part of the narrative, among many other interesting details.

Shows like Life and Rectify have proven that excellent TV narratives can be taken from longtime prisoners who return to the outside world. The uniqueness of Avery’s case, combined with the fact that it actually happened, make me think that this could be one of the most entertaining shows of the year, as disturbing as it may end up being.

Joining the other Netflix Original docu-series Chef’s Table, Making a Murderer will debut on Netflix in its entirety on Friday, December 18.
