Medical dramas and comedies like ER and Scrubs have been part of the TV schedule going almost back to the beginning of television. Whether it's to bring laughs or tears (or sometimes both), medical shows are one of the most sure-fire ways for producers to come up with a hit show. Not all have been as enduring as, say, House, but the shows on this list all have their own followings, and most have been huge hits. Here is our list of TV shows set in a hospital.

ER

It's hard to argue against ER being the most popular medical drama of all time. Set in the fictional Cook County General Hospital in Chicago, the show set ratings records for years. When all was said and down, the Michael Crichton-created show ran for 15 seasons, and 331 episodes. Of course, it also helped launch the careers of George Clooney, Julianna Margulies, Noah Wyle, and others, in addition to starring the likes of Anthony Edwards, Angela Bassett, and Eriq La Salle.

St. Elsewhere

The fictional Saint Eligius is the name of the hospital where the iconic St. Elsewhere TV show was set. The show, which dominated the awards shows in the 1980s, was a staple of NBC's lineup, although it never achieved ratings dominance. Still, for six seasons, the show took home a slew of Emmys with its incredible cast, which included William Daniels, Stephen Furst, Howie Mandel, Mark Harmon, Ronny Cox, Bruce Greenwood, and, last but hardly least, helped launch the career of Denzel Washington. Not too shabby.

Grey's Anatomy

The only show that might give ER a run for the claim of top medical drama of all time has to be Grey's Anatomy. The seemingly endless show has been a hit for most of the 21st Century, and will certainly go down in history as one of the most popular shows of all time. The fictional hospital has had a few names over the years, including Seattle Grace Hospital and Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Nurse Jackie

Set in the fictional All Saints Hospital in New York City, Nurse Jackie is, as the title implies, just as much about the titular nurse and her personal life as it is about a hospital. Unlike some medical dramas, this one really digs deep into how working in a hospital is really hard on the people who do the selfless work. It has its lighter moments, for sure, but it isn't afraid to hit hard, emotionally.

The Resident

One of the more recent shows on this list is Fox's The Resident. It focuses on a star doctor, played by Matt Czuchry, working at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, but all the doctors, nurses, and orderlies are important. As are the hospital administrators, who are often at odds with those folks.

Scrubs

Arguably, the funniest show on this list has to be Scrubs. The hit sitcom, set in the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital, is famous for its hijinks and shenanigans from its core cast of Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, and John C. McGinley (among others). ran for 9 seasons and almost 200 episodes, and remains very popular in syndication and on streaming services.

MASH

MASH stands for "Mobile Army Surgical Hospital," and the show, while not set in a traditional hospital, is one of the most iconic medical shows of all time. The Alan Alda-led show's legacy is one of the biggest in television history, with a final episode that set the record for the most-watched TV show of all time, which stood for decades.

Chicago Hope

Mark Harmon's first role came in a medical drama on ER, and like that classic, he also joined the ensemble cast of Chicago Hope later in its run. His character was famous at one point for uttering an expletive on network TV. That's the kind of show Chicago Hope (set in a hospital with the same name) was, hard-hitting and unvarnished, in a great way.

General Hospital

Although not a prime time show or a streaming show like most on this list, you can't deny the popularity of the daytime soap, General Hospital. The enduring show has aired more than 15,000 episodes since it first debuted in 1963. The cast of characters in the fictional town of Port Charles, many working at the hospital, has changed many times over the years, but the popularity of the soap opera has endured.

The Pitt

It didn't take long for The Pitt, which you can watch with a Netflix subscription, to make a name for itself as one of the best (and most realistic) medical dramas of all time when it won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series after its first season. Star Noah Wyle, who first burst onto the scene

House

House, starring Hugh Laurie as the titular Dr. Greg House, is many people's all-time favorite medical drama, including mine, if we're honest. Laurie is just so great as the brilliant (but always salty) doctor leading a team of top young doctors at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital to diagnose rare medical conditions. Just remember, it's never Lupus.

Nurses

While the CBS drama Nurses only lasted parts of two seasons and just 25 episodes, it was popular enough with critics to earn an Emmy for its lead actress, Michael Learned. Set in New York at the fictional Grant Memorial Hospital, this show, which co-starred Brady Bunch star Robert Reed, didn't get the fair shake it deserved.

City Of Angels

Although it was only on for parts of two seasons, City of Angels is most notable for being the first network medical drama to feature a predominantly African-American cast, led by the great Blair Underwood, Viola Davis, and Vivica A. Fox. It was also notable for helping launch the careers of Gabriel Union and Maya Rudolph, who both had supporting roles on the short-lived CBS show

Doogie Howser, M.D.

Doogie Howser, M.D. is often used, unfairly, as a punchline these days, but in the early '90s, it was a very popular sitcom. Of course, everyone knows that plot. Neil Patrick Harris plays a precocious teenager who becomes a doctor at age 14. Sure, it's ridiculous, but the show was genuinely funny at the time, and it launched the career of Harris, who is still making audiences laugh decades later.

Dr. Kildare

The world lost actor Richard Chamberlain in early 2025, when he died at age 90. He'll always first be remembered for his lead role on the early NBC medical drama Dr. Kildare, which aired for five seasons between 1961 and 1966. The show was one of the earliest of its kind in TV history and, in many ways, influenced most of the shows that came after.

The Knick

The Knick only ran for 20 episodes, but each one was intense and, frankly, fantastic. The show earned multiple Emmy nominations during its brief two-season run on Cinemax. It starred Clive Owen and André Holland as surgeons at the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York, who were essentially inventing modern medicine, which made the show as gross to watch as it was engaging.

Chicago Med

You can't argue with producer Dick Wolf's success rate. In addition to the wildly successful Law & Order franchise, Wolf is also responsible for the Chicago franchise, which started with Chicago Fire, then added Chicago P.D., and closed the loop with the medical drama Chicago Med about the doctors in the emergency room of the fictional Gaffney Chicago Medical Center. The show has been on the air for 10 seasons and remains, along with its sister shows, a key part of NBC's primetime lineup.

Mercy

Not every medical drama turns into the next ER. Take, for example, the short-lived Mercy, which aired for one season in 2009-2010. The show starred Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, and the late Michelle Trachtenberg as three nurses working at the fictional Mercy Hospital in New Jersey. It was a good show, but it got caught up in too many tropes to stand out on its own.

Lenox Hill

This is a unique entry on this list because Lenox Hill is actually a documentary series, which first streamed on Netflix in 2020. It follows a handful of doctors at the very real hospital of the same name in New York City and is an amazing look at the reality of so many shows in this genre.

Childrens Hospital

We'll forgive you if you aren't familiar with Childrens Hospital, which started as a web series, but then had a seven-season run on Adult Swim. It never quite found the largest audience, but the absurdist dark comedy still has a dedicated fanbase.

Marcus Welby, M.D.

It's easy to forget that for many years, ABC was never a top network of the "Big Three." CBS and NBC tended to dominate the ratings in the 1960s, but that all changed in 1970 when Marcus Welby, M.D., in its second of seven seasons, became the first ABC to top the ratings for the 1970-1971 primetime season. Robert Young played the titular doctor, who was, in a way, the prototype for later TV doctors like House, as he was often at odds with other doctors on how to treat patients at the fictional Lang Memorial Hospital in California.

AfterMASH

Let's be honest here: AfterMASH never quite hit the artistic highs (or ratings, for that matter) of its parent show, MASH. It wasn't as big a bomb as some other spinoffs, but it was hardly a roaring success either. The show followed Col. Potter (Harry Morgan) home after the Korean War, and included a couple of other characters from MASH, but it didn't have the humor or the intensity of the original show.

The Night Shift

To be honest, The Night Shift is a little forgettable in the pantheon of medical dramas, but over four short seasons on NBC, it definitely had its moments. Ken Leung is the perfect actor for a doctor on the night shift, so for that reason, I wish we'd gotten more of the show.

Code Black

The healthcare system in the United States (and indeed, the world) is often understaffed and overburdened. Especially big city emergency rooms. This is the basic premise of Code Black. Based on a documentary of the same name, the CBS show showed the harsh realities doctors and nurses face in present-day Los Angeles, and while it only lasted three seasons, they were three hard-hitting ones.

St. Denis Medical

If you're a fan of The Office and The Paper, then you might want to give St. Denis Medical a chance with your Peacock subscription. It does for hospitals what Parks and Rec did for government workers, and it's always fun to see a more light-hearted show centered in a hospital.

The Good Doctor

Showrunner David Shore has created some of the best shows in the last 30 years or so, including NYPD Blue and House. Another medical drama of his creation is The Good Doctor, which ended a seven-season run on ABC in 2024. The show focused on Dr. Shaun Murphy, a brilliant young doctor with a unique ability to understand symptoms at almost first glance. Much like Shore's other great doctor character, Greg House, Murphy (Freddie Highmore), has a Sherlock Holmes-like mind, and that works really well in medical shows.

Brilliant Minds

Zachary Quinto played one of the most ruthless TV villains ever on NBC's Heroes, and in 2024, he returned to the Peacock network. Instead of an all-powerful super villain, he plays a brilliant neurologist at a hospital in The Bronx in the aptly titled, Brilliant Minds.

Pulse

Like a lot of shows, sometimes it feels like Netflix gives up on them too quickly. Pulse, which was canceled after one season in 2025, felt like it was just finding its footing.

Casualty

The longest-running primetime medical drama is not Grey's Anatomy, but a British show from the BBC called Casualty. The show debuted in 1986 and is set at the fictional Holby City Hospital in Southwest England. With well over 1,300 episodes, it's still got a ways to go to catch General Hospital, but for primetime, it blows everyone else out of the water.

Carol's Second Act

There simply aren't enough medical sitcoms, and it's easy to understand why. The gravity of so many medical situations means that it's hard to keep things light-hearted. Still, it's great when one gets a chance. like the short-lived Carol's Second Act on CBS. The show, starring Patricia Heaton as a middle-aged intern, only lasted 18 episodes, but I don't think it could have worked if they'd had a little more time. It is a fun premise.

The Doctors

Did you know that General Hospital was not the only soap opera set in a hospital that debuted in 1963? The Doctors, which aired on NBC for 20 years and more than 5,500 episodes, debuted on the very same day, April 1st, 1963, as its ABC rival, but the popular show aired its final episode in 1982.

New Amsterdam

If I'm honest, New Amsterdam is one of the more generic shows on this list, but if you're a fan of the genre and you haven't seen it, you'll probably like it. It's not the most groundbreaking show of all time, but it will satisfy your itch for a TV show about life in a hospital.

It seems that, with each generation, people continue to be obsessed with preserving their youth. However, I cannot say that I submit to that mentality because I have watched my fair share of movies and TV shows that deal with eternal life, and it really does not sound like all it's cracked up to be.

That being said, the mere idea of having a life without end and being able to experience multiple eras in history firsthand has always fascinated me, which is why I do tend to enjoy these kinds of stories. We could spend an eternity discussing all the best tales of immortality from the big and small screen, but here are some of the essentials.

Death Becomes Her (1992)

In Robert Zemeckis' darkly comic, classic '90s movie Death Becomes Her, actor Madeline Ashton (Meryl Streep) discovers that the secret to her longtime rival, author Helen Sharp's (Goldie Hawn), sudden success and "glow-up" is a potion that grants eternal youth. However, it also makes maintaining that youthful glow more challenging, especially after Madeline and Helen suffer insane accidents, which Sabrina Carpenter and Jenna Ortega parodied in the "Taste" music video.

Peter Pan (1953)

I remember looking forward to the freedoms of adulthood when I was younger, but now that I am a grown-up, I think Peter Pan and his Lost Boys had the right idea about staying in Neverland, where they could stay children forever. Steven Spielberg would even use J.M. Barrie's classic fantasy tale as the catalyst of a story exploring the loss of one's inner child in 1991's Hook, which stars Robin Williams as a grown-up Peter Pan.

Deadpool (2016)

Many of the funniest and most gruesome moments from star Ryan Reynolds' adaptation of Marvel's Deadpool comics revolve around the eponymous anti-hero's incredible healing abilities, which also prevent him from aging. Quick-witted mercenary Wade Wilson gained this blessing, or curse, after participating in an experimental program to cure his cancer, which also left him with a grotesque skin condition, inspiring him to wear a costume covering him head to toe.

Doctor Who (1963-Present)

A sci-fi TV show that has managed to get away with featuring the same character in the lead for its entire decades-long run is the British cult favorite phenomenon, Doctor Who. The title character is the last of an alien race known as the Time Lords, meaning he can continue to live on infinitely by regenerating and changing his appearance, which explains why he is played by a different actor every few seasons or so.

The Picture Of Dorian Gray (1945)

One of the most influential stories involving immortality is The Picture of Dorian Gray, in which the title character suddenly ceases to age while his likeness in a recent portrait begins to grow more decrepit over time. One of the most widely praised adaptations of the 1890 novel from Oscar Wilde stars Hurd Hatfield in the title role.

Mr. Nobody (2009)

Writer and director Jaco Van Dormael’s Mr. Nobody is unlike any other film regarding the concept of eternal youth, because the main character is the only one who is not immortal, thanks to a cutting-edge surgical process. Academy Award winner Jared Leto stars in the moving, surreal sci-fi drama as the last mortal man in a utopian future, where he recounts the life (or lives) he has experienced up to this point to a confused journalist.

Interview With The Vampire (1994)

We cannot talk about eternal youth without talking about vampires, and there are few tales of the like that incorporate the theme of immortality as potently as Interview with the Vampire. Director Neil Jordan's adaptation of Anne Rice's novel stars Brad Pitt as Louis, who tells a 20th-century journalist (played by Christian Slater) the story of his life as an ageless creature of the night, dating back to the late 1700s when he is bitten by Lestat (Tom Cruise).

Hancock (2008)

In Hancock, a superhero movie not inspired by a comic book, Will Smith plays the titular boozy, homeless man, who has been mysteriously blessed with extraordinary abilities, including indestructibility and agelessness. However, he comes close to losing those gifts due to a shocking secret about his forgotten past.

Highlander (1986)

It is said in Russell Mulcahy's original cult favorite that there can only be one Highlander. However, the action-packed fantasy thriller, starring Christopher Lambert as a more-than-400-year-old Scottish warrior facing the battle of his life in modern New York City, spawned several sequels and a TV series.

True Blood (2008-2014)

One of the most popular vampire TV shows of all time is HBO's True Blood. Based on a series of novels by Charlaine Harris, the drama takes place in a world where humans and fanged creatures of the night are able to co-exist, thanks to the eponymous, synthetic substitute for blood.

Eternals (2021)

Created by legendary comic book writer and artist Jack Kirby, the Eternals are a group of superheroes given the gift of immortality, among other distinct abilities, by their creators, the Celestials. The Marvel Comic would inspire an MCU film from Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao and starring the likes of Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, and more.

The Sandman (2022-2025)

The Sandman is Netflix's long-awaited series adaptation of Neil Gaiman's widely acclaimed fantasy comic book series of the same name, published under DC's Vertigo imprint in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Tom Sturridge's title character, also known as Dream and plenty of other aliases for his purpose of manipulating the human subconscious, is one of several beings known as the Endless, who each personify a different abstract concept, such as Death and Desire.

Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)

You can always count on a filmmaker like Jim Jarmusch to come through with a stunningly unique take on the horror genre, such as with his acclaimed vampire movie, Only Lovers Left Alive. The dramedy follows the reunion between a rock star (played by Tom Hiddleston) and his lover (played by Tilda Swinton), who have been in an on-and-off relationship for a very long time.

Torchwood (2006-2011)

The Doctor may be the last of the Time Lords, but he is not the only character from the Doctor Who universe who cannot die. The hit spinoff, Torchwood, following the adventures of a secret organization defending Earth from supernatural threats, stars John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, who was turned immortal when he was revived by the power of the Time Vortex after he was killed by a Dalek.

In Time (2011)

Widely regarded as a movie with a brilliant concept but a lackluster execution is the Justin Timberlake-led sci-fi thriller In Time, set in a futuristic society in which people stop aging at the age of 25. However, they can only live perpetually if they have enough time, which is also treated as currency. In other words, the wealthy are truly immortal, while the poor literally struggle to survive until the next day.

What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

One of the funniest films about vampirism is the horror-comedy movie favorite, What We Do in the Shadows, which later inspired a hit FX series of the same name. The faux documentary follows what goes on in the lives of a group of centuries-old bloodsuckers (played by Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement, and Johnny Brugh) sharing a house in New Zealand.

Spring (2015)

Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead's romantic horror movie Spring is a beautiful, Lovecraftian take on a Richard Linklater-style drama like Before Sunrise. It follows an American man (played by Lou Taylor Pucci) visiting Italy when he falls for a woman (played by Nadia Hilker), who is not only cursed with agelessness, but hides another transformative secret.

The Fountain (2006)

From Darren Aronofsky, The Fountain is a trippy thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz that is told in a nonlinear, anthology-style structure and takes place over the course of 1000 years. One segment, set in the 1500s, follows a quest for the Fountain of Youth, another centers on a modern-day surgeon and his terminally ill wife, and the last follows a man passionately tending to a tree while traveling through space in the deep future. The question the film leaves you with is whether or not Jackman's roles are all the same person.

The Age Of Adaline (2015)

One film that effectively illustrates the challenging consequences of eternal youth is The Age of Adaline. Blake Lively stars in the title role of a mid-20th-century woman who suffers a freak accident that suddenly causes her to stop aging, forcing her to go on the run and live anonymously for decades.

Forever (2014-2015)

The short-lived crime procedural Forever stars Ioan Gruffudd as a man working as a medical examiner in New York City. However, the most perplexing mystery he struggles to solve is why he has not aged in more than two centuries.

The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus (2009)

Known for being the final film starring Academy Award winner Heath Ledger, director Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus stars Christopher Plummer in the title role, who was gifted eternal life by the Devil (Tom Waits) in exchange for the soul of his daughter, Valentina (Lily Cole), once she reaches her sixteenth birthday.

Altered Carbon (2018-2020)

While most stories about eternal life are considered fantasy, the concept is not entirely implausible. For instance, the Netflix series Altered Carbon imagines a dystopian future in which immortality is achieved by digitally preserving human consciousness and uploading it into a new body.

The Man From Earth (2007)

Writer Jerome Bixby was the legendary mastermind behind some of the best episodes of The Twilight Zone, and his final produced work before his death, The Man from Earth, does feel like something that would have been right up Rod Serling's alley. The film stars David Lee Smith as a professor who, during his impromptu retirement party, reveals to his colleagues the shocking revelation that he has inexplicably existed for thousands of years.

He Never Died (2015)

Without giving too much away, He Never Died is a bizarre thriller starring Henry Rollins as a man calling himself Jack, who has been on Earth longer than even he has been able to keep track of.

Cronos (1993)

The feature film debut of writer and director Guillermo del Toro, Cronos, is a chilling thriller about an ancient, highly coveted device shaped like a scarab that can grant people the gift of immortality.

Tuck Everlasting (2002)

Based on the 1975 novel of the same name by Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting stars Alexis Bledel as a 19th-century teen who falls in love with a "young" man (played by Jonathan Jackson) whose family has accidentally discovered the Fountain of Youth.

Blade Of The Immortal (2017)

Director Takashi Miike, the mastermind behind some of the shocking Japanese horror movies of all time, brings his signature style to this live-action adaptation of the graphic novel, Blade of the Immortal. The film stars Takuya Kimura as a samurai cursed with eternal life, who is enlisted by a young girl to help avenge her father's death.

The Last Witch Hunter (2015)

Vin Diesel's Dungeons & Dragons character served as the inspiration for his role in The Last Witch Hunter, in which he plays a man whose immortality has allowed him the time to become the most skilled asset in war against witchcraft.

Zardoz (1974)

Writer and director John Boorman's Zardoz is better remembered for the ridiculous futuristic outfit that Sean Connery wears than the plot of the bizarre sci-fi adventure. The story is set in the 23rd Century, in which Connery's deadly warrior, known as Zed, comes across a community where death has been rendered obsolete.

New Amsterdam (2008)

Not to be confused with a hit NBC medical drama that happens to bear the same name, New Amsterdam is a short-lived Fox crime drama starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a New York detective granted eternal youth by a Native American woman he saved 400 years earlier.

The Old Guard (2020)

Based on the graphic novel by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, the Netflix original film The Old Guard stars Charlize Theron as the leader of a group of ageless mercenaries. It would spawn a sequel that deepens its lore, which was released in 2025.

Immortality (1998)

Also released as The Wisdom of Crocodiles to reflect the novel that inspired it, the aptly named Immortality stars Jude Law as a vampire preying on women in hopes of finding the one who redeems him.

For decades, countless TV shows have relied on a trope that has come to be known as the "will they, won't they?" phenomenon, in which the story teases the romantic potential of two central characters with great chemistry. The gimmick has worked on many audiences who love tuning in to see if the couple is one step closer to breaking from their platonic dynamic, however, when that moment finally comes, it does not always lead to a happily ever after, especially for the show they were on. We looked at several classic TV sitcoms and hits of other genres, too, and found some prime examples of couples who perhaps should have stayed friends for series' sake.

Rachel And Joey On Friends

The first couple of seasons of Friends largely focused on the potential romance between Ross Gellar (David Schwimmer) and Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), which ultimately proved to be one worth rooting for even during their rough patches. However, Rachel and Joey's (Matt LeBlanc) brief attempt to date after developing feelings for one another was so awkward that it was even acknowledged by the characters before they decided to go back to being platonic.

J.D. And Elliot On Scrubs

When J.D. (Zach Braff) and Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke) first come together on Scrubs, it is one of the most fun and fulfilling plot developments from the medical comedy's early days. However, their rekindling in Season 8 does not have quite the same magic, which might also be a symptom of its less-beloved final years.

Troy And Britta On Community

Following hints that Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) and Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs) had developed feelings for each other, the study group members' romance was made official in Season 4. Of course, that season, considered the worst season of the show, is also referred to as "The Gas Leak Year" to explain why everyone at Greendale was acting a little off during that time and we consider this awkward and unfunny coupling an essential example of that.

Mulder And Scully On The X-Files

Creator Chris Carter's The X-Files, which follows the unusual investigations of Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), is considered to be one of the best sci-fi TV shows of all time but another genre you could lump it in with is romance. However, the series was at its best when it only went as far as implying a spark between the FBI agents but was at its weakest any time it went in more explicit directions.

Barney And Robin On How I Met Your Mother

The first season of How I Met Your Mother saw Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) going back and forth on his feelings for Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) before they finally took the leap in a satisfying way or, at least, far more satisfying than Robin's relationship with Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). The coupling never quite felt right and the fact that most of Season 9 is set at the weekend, which leads to divorce in the finale, makes it feel even more wasted.

Dawson And Joey On Dawson's Creek

The concept of James Van Der Beek's title character from Dawson's Creek having romantic potential with his childhood friend, Joey Potter (Katie Holmes) was already a little too on-the-nose at the time. Their tumultuous "will they, won't they" arc was so irritatingly drawn out and their inevitable coupling proved to lack some significant chemistry, ultimately making it clear that they were not right for each other.

Steve And Laura On Family Matters

You could argue that making Steve Urkel actor Jaleel White the star of the Family Matters cast was the true beginning of the end for the sitcom in terms of overall quality, considering it was originally supposed to be about his neighbors, the Winslows. However, seeing the stereotypical nerd's one-sided crush on Laura (Kellie Shanygne Williams) turn into an actual relationship might be the series' furthest leap over the shark.

Sam And Rebecca On Cheers

Perhaps the quintessential example of an ideal "will they, won't they" relationship is that of Sam Malone (Ted Danson) and Diane Chambers (Shelley Long) from the Cheers cast, whose relationship may have ended by bittersweet means but was fun and satisfying while it lasted. Everything about the single mother's relationship with the diner owner, especially their witty banter, was at its peak when they were still strictly friends who occasionally flirted.

Maddie And David On Moonlighting

One of the first couples that comes to mind when the topic of "will they, won't they" arcs with disappointing turnouts is brought up is David Addison (Bruce Willis) and Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) on the Emmy-winning comedy, Moonlighting. The pair – a sarcastic detective and a former model managing a private investigation firm – drove each other nuts and teased a potential romance for several seasons until they finally gave it a shot but with an underwhelming reception from critics and audiences alike.

Erin And Andy On The Office

If there is one undeniably positive thing we can say about Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) and his relationship with Erin Haynes (Ellie Kemper), it is that the hapless Dunder Mifflin salesperson and flighty receptionist make a much better couple than he and Angela Martin (Angela Kinsey). However, Andy and Angela's tragically one-sided dynamic (particularly due to her secret affection for Dwight) led to jokes and storylines that were far more interesting by comparison.

Damon And Elena On The Vampire Diaries

The CW's hit vampire TV show, The Vampire Diaries, boasted the distinction of having a "will they, won't they" arc that branched off from a different trope: the love triangle between Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and undead brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). While "Delena" ended up becoming the winning couple, the challenges they faced – from memory-erasing storylines to Dobrev's exit from the cast – made for an exhausting watch until their happy ending in the series finale.

Daenerys And Jon On Game Of Thrones

Most fans of Games of Thrones would agree that the HBO original series started to go downhill once the writers began deviating from the original source material, George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. One such disappointing element of the epic fantasy show was the romance between Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) – a relationship that saw the fan-favorite characters veering into directions that seemed unnatural for how they were developed.

Nick And Jess On New Girl

Even though they retained a pleasantly platonic relationship early on, anyone who has ever seen a sitcom likely was able to predict that Jessica "Jess" Day (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) from the New Girl cast were destined for romance from the beginning. For how much it was a delight watching the roommates become a couple, most would agree that the show was always at its best when they were still friends.

Booth And Brennan On Bones

Fans of Bones would argue that seeing forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) officially becoming a couple after years of teasing did not ruin the crime procedural by any stretch. However, many viewers were disappointed to see the series immediately jump ahead and show them settled down and with a baby on the way instead of taking the time to show the natural evolution of their relationship.

House And Cuddy On House

Admittedly, it was fun to watch Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) flirt with Dean of Medicine Dr. Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) but no one could have imagined that such as selfish, manipulative, and emotionally unavailable jerk like him could be in a loving relationship with her. Of course, it was these very behaviors that doomed their romance, which ended permanently when Edelstein left the hit medical drama.

Rory And Jess On Gilmore Girls

The romance between Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) and Dean Forester (Jared Padalecki) was a sweet tale of first love that made Gilmore Girls' inaugural run a winning first season. Unfortunately, after Luke's troubled nephew, Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia), moved to Stars Hollow and piqued Rory's interest, it ruined the relationship and, after she and Jess became official, her likability began to wane.

Buffy and Spike On Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Angel (David Boreanaz) briefly shared a romance that Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans would agree was fun and exciting. In fact, we can think of several reasons why Buffy should have picked Angel over Spike (James Marsters), who was never intended to be a regular character in the first place anyway.

Josh And Donna On The West Wing

There is no denying that among the West Wing cast members, Bradley Whitford's Josh Lyman and his assistant Donna Moss (Janel Moloney) had one of the most irresistible dynamics. However, when their relationship became more than strictly professional, the coupling was largely deemed as coming too late into the political drama to make for a satisfying outcome.

Jane the Virgin

Jane the Virgin was an otherwise sweet and inspiring dramedy who did not know how to handle the blossoming romance at the center of it all. Because of various contrived developments and signs of incompatibility, the title character (played by Gina Rodriguez) and Rafael (Justin Baldoni) are considered one of the weakest TV couples in recent memory.

Max And Helen On New Amsterdam

One of the biggest mistakes that a TV show can make when pairing up a "will they, won't they?" couple is changing the fundamental makeup of each character. That is how many fans felt when Dr. Max Goodwin (former The Blacklist cast member Ryan Eggold) and Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) struck up a relationship on the NBC medical drama, New Amsterdam.

Clark And Lana On Smallville

Smallville established at the very beginning that Clark Kent (Tom Welling) had a crush on classmate Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) and eventually formed a relationship with her that was riddled by an unstable foundation before they split in Season 8. Luckily, soon after, Clark would begin dating his true soulmate, Lois Lane (Erica Durance).

Jackie And Fez On That '70s Show

To be fair, fans and critics would agree that That '70s Show had already been experiencing a steep decline in quality by the time Jackie Burkhart (Mila Kunis) developed a crush on Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) out of the blue in the seventh and final season. However, seeing them finally come together in the finale following years of Jackie rejecting him just felt weird and the creators seemed to agree, based on how they split them up and got Jackie and Kelso (Ashton Kutcher) back together for That '90s Show.

Zack And Kelly On Saved By The Bell

Watching Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) pursue Kelly Kapowki (Tiffani Thiessen) to no avail was always one of the most fun things about Saved by the Bell. Watching the often horribly behaved sitcom kid become a true romantic and win Kelly's heart just felt off-brand and things only became more ridiculous when they got engaged during Saved By the Bell: The College Years.

Coulson And May On Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have enjoyed shipping characters, but few "will they, won't they?" couples in the franchise were more popular than Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his colleague, Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen). It is just a shame that it took Coulson's imminent death, and with only days left to spare, to inspire them to finally give a relationship a try.

Shawn And Juliet On Psych

Fans of Psych would likely agree that the best relationship on Psych is Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill). Yet, it might be a hot take to say that Shawn's slowly built-up coupling with Det. Juliet O'Hara (Maggie Lawson) was added to show for a needless element of romance but without taking the time to build the relationship into something genuinely worth rooting for.

Lane And Zack On Gilmore Girls

There are many polarizing romantic storylines on Gilmore Girls but most fans have come to agree that Lane Kim (Keiko Agena) and Zack Van Gerbig (Todd Lowe) have the worst. To be frank, they just feel Lane's former bandmate is a bad influence on her.

Oliver And Felicity On Arrow

While audiences are willing to suspend disbelief for all kinds of reasons when watching a comic book TV show, fans and critics had a hard time believing the relationship between Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards). The wealthy vigilante and his employee-turned-lover were incompatible for an irritating number of reasons.

Pete And Myka On Warehouse 13

What made the coupling of Secret Service agents Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) and Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) a low point for SyFy's Warehouse 13 was that there was no actual "will they, won't they" buildup. They were clearly and perfectly platonic duo until Pete realizes he is in love with Myka completely out of the blue.

Michael And Holly On The Office

Let's make something clear: seeing Michael Scott (Steve Carell) find a happy relationship with Holly Flax (Amy Ryan) was a grandly heartwarming sight. We're only counting their relationship because it led to Carell's exit from NBC's The Office cast and, with it, the series' creative downfall.

Maeve And Otis On Sex Education

Over the course of four seasons, it seemed like Netflix's Sex Education was building toward a long-awaited happily ever after for Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey). Unfortunately, the series betrayed its centerpiece couple by introducing a long-distance relationship plot, ultimately ruining them for good.

Lucifer And Chloe On Lucifer

Despite having the actual Devil as its main "hero," Lucifer is a fun, bizarre take on the crime thriller genre. Yet, many fans felt that the show went in an overly dramatic direction when the title character Tom Ellis and Det. Chloe Decker (Lauren German) became a romantic couple.

Chicago P.D. added a new member to the Intelligence Unit in Season 12 for the fall 2024 TV schedule, following Tracy Spiridakos' departure as Hailey Upton back in the spring. Toya Turner was already a familiar face on NBC for any One Chicago viewers who had tuned in to the fifth and final season of New Amsterdam, in which she played traveling nurse Gabrielle opposite Jocko Sims. Turner spoke with CinemaBlend about going from one NBC show to the other, and I can definitely understand why her new show seems "so hot" in comparison to the medical drama.

As the wait is currently on for One Chicago to return in the 2025 TV schedule with the winter premieres, I recalled what the New Amsterdam-turned-Chicago P.D. actress told me in addition to the super sweet BTS stories about her new co-stars. As a fan of the medical drama back in its day, I asked what it was like for her to switch over to crime for P.D., and she shared:

Toya Turner's Officer Kiana Cook debuted in the second episode of Season 12, which you can revisit streaming now with a Peacock subscription. By pure happenstance, she was in the area when Ruzek was chasing down the criminals who had shot and killed Detective Martel. They teamed up, which eventually gave her an in with the Intelligence Unit.

For Officer Cook, it was an intense and dangerous case with bullets flying. For Toya Turner... well, it was a lot of cardio while wearing polyester instead of the cooler scrubs of New Amsterdam. After I admitted that I'd wondered how hot it was filming for her and Patrick John Flueger when I watched Episode 2, she laughed and confirmed my suspicions, saying:

Having been to Chicago in the heat of the summer, I was not surprised to learn that polyester was not the most comfortable material for filming chase sequences on location in the Windy City! Of course, it wasn't a comfortable episode as Ruzek reeled from Martel's death while also chasing justice (with Burgess absent), so as Toya Turner said, "it worked."

Turner's big Cook-centric episode later in the fall was also physically grueling, as she spent most of it doused in water due to heavy rain being scripted into the case. It was enough to bond Cook and Torres and something that the actress really enjoyed as her character went from a patrol cop to member of the Intelligence team. The actress said:

Whatever the future holds for Kiana Cook, I think it's safe to say that Toya Turner is on board for whatever option keeps her from having to wear the very hot polyester again! Her character went on her first undercover op in the final two episodes of Chicago P.D.'s fall season, and may still need a bit of practice. Then again, if Gloria hadn't been able to suss out the truth and make a connection to Torres, Cook might have had an easier time.

Fans still have weeks to wait before the end of winter hiatus, but the promo for the winter premiere previews an intense moment for Kiana Cook:

Chicago P.D. will return to NBC on Wednesday, January 8 in its usual 10 p.m. ET time slot, to pick up on Chief Reid revealing himself as an antagonist. As always, the network's One Chicago Wednesdays open with Chicago Med at 8 p.m. ET followed by Chicago Fire at 9 p.m. ET and then P.D. at 10 p.m. ET. The new year will also deliver One Chicago's first three-part crossover event since 2019, so be sure to tune in!

The fall premieres of the 2024 TV schedule are coming up in the 2024 TV schedule, and that includes the return of NBC's Law & Order Thursdays. That lineup will be different starting this fall, though, with Organized Crime no longer airing after SVU and Law & Order. Fortunately, some exciting casting news feels like a step in the right direction for NBC's new lineup on Thursdays, and not just because it's bringing back an alum of not one but two of the network's hit shows. Fans, prepare to welcome The Blacklist and New Amsterdam alum Ryan Eggold to Law & Order!

Ryan Eggold is slated to appear in a Season 24 episode as a guest star with a personal connection to Detective Vince Riley, according to TVLine. Named Matt Riley, the character is the detective's brother. No further details are available about what the brothers' dynamic will be like at the time of writing, but after Riley's personal life didn't get a ton of attention when Reid Scott joined the cast for Season 23, I'm looking forward to getting to see his interactions with his brother. Plus, Eggold had a long tenure on NBC after his role on The Blacklist, the short-lived Blacklist spinoff, and then five seasons of New Amsterdam. It could be fun to see him back!

That's also not the only casting news for the upcoming season of Law & Order, and all three are what make me optimistic about Law & Order Thursdays continuing with just two L&O shows. Mariska Hargitay, a.k.a. the face of the franchise after 25 seasons and counting as SVU's Olivia Benson, will cross over to Law & Order for an October episode. Given that the shows don't return to NBC this fall until October, that means Benson will appear fairly early in L&O's new season. SVU's Elizabeth Marvel will appear in the same episode as Defense Attorney Rita Calhoun.

And while I doubt that this casting news means that the Law & Order team is making a concerted effort to change after Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 was renewed for Peacock Premium subscribers rather than NBC, delving into one character's family life as well as tying a story to SVU sounds like the makings of a more cohesive L&O world on Thursdays starting this fall. Previously, OC would be the show most likely to crossover with SVU and/or deliver brother drama. It's hard not to be encouraged by the original series trying some new things this season. I was optimistic about that way back in April after a particularly eventful episode, and I'm still optimistic about it now.

Of course, we'll have to wait and see if Law & Order and SVU are more closely tied in the 2024-2025 TV season or not, not to mention if there's a future for Ryan Eggold on the show beyond just one guest appearance. Whatever happens, there's plenty to look forward to on Thursdays even without three solid hours of Wolf Entertainment action.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar's Found will air in the 10 p.m. ET slot formerly filled by Christopher Meloni's Organized Crime, and it's hard for me to imagine a more thrilling NBC replacement. If you're unconvinced – or just didn't check out Found's first season in the spring – you can find every episode so far streaming with a Peacock subscription, as well as the most recent season of Law & Order.

As a refreshingly heartwarming, character-driven, and often humorous cop drama, it is no wonder that The Rookie was renewed for a seventh season by ABC. Of course, despite what makes creator Alexi Hawley’s hit — starring Nathan Fillion as the LAPD’s oldest newcomer — unique, there are plenty of other great TV shows that would easily appeal to fans, and we have compiled a list of choices (along with how to watch them) below.

Castle (2009-2016)

Starring: Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic

What it's about: After a successful crime novelist crosses paths with a headstrong detective assigned to investigate a killer copying the crimes in his bestseller, they become unlikely partners on some of New York’s most head-scratching cases.

Why it is a great show to watch you like The Rookie: Another one of Nathan Fillion’s best TV shows is Castle, which compares to The Rookie mostly in the fact that it is a relatively lighthearted (and sometimes romantic) crime drama featuring the same actor in the main role, even though Richard Castle and John Nolan could not be any more different.

9-1-1 (2018-Present)

Starring: Peter Krause, Angela Bassett

What it's about: The personal and professional struggles of a close-knit group of first responders in Los Angeles.

Southland (2009-2013)

Why it is a great show to watch you like The Rookie: From creator Ann Biderman, Southland is yet another widely acclaimed cop drama that sheds light on the personal lives of its talented ensemble and the struggles of being a rookie, but is also noted for its intense grit and for being cancelled too soon, after only five seasons.

New Amsterdam (2018-2023)

Starring: Ryan Eggold

What it's about: Fed up with a system he believes causes more harm than healing, the new medical director for the oldest public hospital in the country aspires to change the rules.

Why it is a great show to watch you like The Rookie: We thought we would change things up by, instead of mentioning another cop show like The Rookie, highlighting New Amsterdam — an acclaimed medical drama that is similar in how it follows a protagonist who surprises people with his professional choices and tackles real-world issues with refreshing honesty.

If you happen to like all of these shows but still have not watched The Rookie, then it sounds like it would be right up your alley. Stream The Rookie on Hulu and follow John Nolan’s journey from the beginning.

NBC wrapped one of its medical dramas back in early 2023 with the series finale of New Amsterdam, starring Ryan Eggold as Dr. Max Goodwin. The show ended with a two-hour finale event after five seasons, but two hours weren't enough to answer every single question about the characters and their futures. Now, a sequel series is in the works, and the premise leaves me wondering if New Amsterdam fans could get to see the footage that didn't make it into the finale in 2023.

New Amsterdam's Potential Sequel Series

The potential sequel in the works at NBC is tentatively titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow and would center on Luna Goodwin, according to Deadline, set three decades after the main events of the original series. The premise makes sense with how the original show ended, as the final scene was actually a flash-forward with Luna as a doctor who fully embraces her dad's "How can I help?" approach to medicine and role as New Amsterdam medical director.

If ordered to series, the project would reportedly explore the impact of artificial intelligence on the medical industry. New Amsterdam creator, executive producer, and showrunner David Schulner is developing the project for NBC, with fellow New Amsterdam alum Peter Horton on board as director and executive producer. Molly Griggs of Dr. Death and Prodigal Son played adult Luna in the original show; it's not clear if she'd reprise the role for the sequel.

It remains to be seen if New Amsterdam: Tomorrow will get a series order and a slot later in the 2024 TV schedule, but this is encouraging news for fans of the original who weren't quite ready to say a permanent goodbye to that world. It was clear pretty quickly after the show ended that there was still interest, as the medical drama was quickly trending on Netflix.

The Scene Cut From The Series Finale

I spoke with New Amsterdam executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton for the finale back in 2023, including how Max ultimately chose to prioritize Luna over a relationship with Wilder or any lingering feelings about Helen. The episode left the door open about whether he and Wilder reunited at some point between his departure for a new job in Geneva and the time jump ahead to adult Luna, and Schulner revealed that the footage answering that question had been shot. He shared:

At the time, David Schulner had no regrets about not filling in that blank canonically and leaving it for fans to decide what they think happened. While a series set 30 years after the original show wouldn't necessarily have an organic way to incorporate old footage – particularly since Ryan Eggold is reportedly not attached to the sequel – it seems fairly likely that the project would at least have to answer the question about what Max decided.

For his part, Peter Horton shared another reason why the open ending was a good fit for the New Amsterdam series finale:

I don't want to say that Peter Horton manifested NBC wanting to bring the world of New Amsterdam back, but a potential sequel going into development more than a year after the original show's finale definitely seems like the stars aligning!

In all seriousness, the wait is on for word on whether NBC moves forward with New Amsterdam: Tomorrow. For now, you can always find New Amsterdam streaming both via Netflix subscription and Peacock Premium subscription.

The end is sadly nigh for Magnum P.I., with the fan-favorite show concluding in the 2024 TV schedule with a grand total of two remaining episodes from the fifth and final season. The Jay Hernandez-led drama was cancelled back in June 2023, when the WGA writers strike and SAG-AFTRA actors strike were still months away from ending, and viewer efforts for a second rescue haven't resulted in a Season 6 renewal. Now, NBC has announced how the show is getting a bigger-than-expected finale night in the new year. 

While it can be seen as a fun way to celebrate Magnum, Higgins, and the rest on their way out, I can't help but be reminded of the odd and abrupt ending of another cancelled NBC drama in 2023. 

How NBC Is Saying Goodbye To Magnum P.I.

Magnum P.I. may have two episodes left, but they won't air over two weeks in 2024. The final pair of episodes will both air on Wednesday, January 3 on NBC, starting with the first at 9 p.m. ET and continuing with the second at 10 p.m. ET. With the three shows of One Chicago retaking Wednesday nights on January 17, it seemed likely that Magnum P.I. would air its penultimate episode on January 3 and its series finale on January 10. Instead, the network is apparently giving the show a farewell with two episodes in a row. 

But the last two episodes airing back-to-back doesn't mean that fans are in for a two-part adventure for Magnum and Co. in the new year. In fact, the announcement of two episodes airing on the same night didn't make me excited for a big night of Magnum P.I. action or sad all over again that it's ending, but rather made me think back to another cancelled drama and its double feature finale. Why I'm Flashing Back To New Amsterdam

New Amsterdam's similarities to Magnum P.I. from a plot perspective may be few and far between, but how NBC is ending Jay Hernandez's show is definitely a lot like the swan song for Ryan Eggold's in early 2023. New Amsterdam was a medical drama that ran for five seasons, with The Blacklist alum Eggold as leading man. The show ended back in January when the network aired its final two episodes back-to-back. It wasn't truly a two-part finale event, however, as the executive producers confirmed to CinemaBlend shortly before the end when I asked if the plan was always for a two-episode finale. They said:

• David Schulner: "No. That's why they're completely different episodes."
• Peter Horton: "That's a scheduling issue for NBC. That wasn't a creative choice."

Now, New Amsterdam ending with two completely different episodes on one night certainly doesn't mean that the exact same thing will happen with Magnum P.I. a year later, but Magnum isn't a show known for multi-parters either on NBC or from its CBS days. Plus, the show hadn't yet been cancelled when the end of Season 5 was written and then filmed. I'm guessing that the final two episodes will be two almost entirely separate episodes. 

And that's not necessarily a bad thing! I thought that New Amsterdam stuck the landing with its series finale twist (available streaming now with a Peacock Premium subscription), and Perdita Weeks already previewed some "good news" on the way before the final credits roll on Magnum P.I. Fans can also be happy about showrunner Eric Guggenheim's comments about how the series finale will end, even if his words about the odds of a Season 6 save aren't as optimistic.

Whether or not Magnum P.I.'s final two episodes will be entirely separate a la New Amsterdam remains to be seen, but at least the holiday hiatus won't be too long. Magnum P.I. returns to NBC for the very last time on Wednesday, January 3 at 9 p.m. ET. You can revisit the first four seasons streaming via Freevee, and the full fifth season so far via Peacock.

Medical drama New Amsterdam has come to an end on NBC after five seasons, with an emotional final run of episodes that concluded in a way that even the most diehard of fans may not have seen coming. Despite the show wrapping its run on network television, it has already found viewers via streaming. In fact, more than a week after the finale aired as a two-part event on January 17, New Amsterdam is trending in Netflix’s Top 10 TV shows. 

Like Manifest before it, New Amsterdam’s cancellation hasn’t meant that people won't check out the episodes. So, read on for how the show is still reaching an audience and what executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton had to say about bringing back one notable star for the finale and why the ending for Helen Sharpe “wasn’t on purpose.”

New Amsterdam Is Trending

At the time of writing, New Amsterdam is trending in the #3 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 TV shows, and it has had a spot in the Top 10 for several days. This is particularly notable due to Netflix subscribers only having access to two of the five seasons that aired on NBC. Viewers will have to head over to Peacock for a subscription to find all five seasons streaming. 

New Amsterdam is also currently listed among the trending series on Peacock, although without a ranking like what Netflix provides. All things considered, the medical drama is doing exceptionally well on streaming for a show that recently aired its series finale! 

In the wake of that finale, let’s dig into what the executive producers had to say about the return of Daniel Dae Kim as Dr. Cassian Shin, who they couldn’t get back before the end, and why Helen’s story concluded the way that it did.

How New Amsterdam Got Daniel Dae Kim Back (And Not Freema Agyeman)

News that Daniel Dae Kim would join the cast of New Amsterdam broke in early 2020, not too long before production shutdowns began happening across the country due to the spread of the COVID pandemic. Kim’s debut episode was pulled due to sensitive subject matter in light of the pandemic, and his entrance was different from the original plan. 

In a fun surprise for fans, trauma surgeon Dr. Cassian Shin made one last appearance in the series finale as one of the very many doctors who contributed to the surgery that would save a single mom’s life. Executive producer David Schulner explained how the unexpected cameo happened, saying:

The climactic surgery of New Amsterdam’s very last episode required all surgical hands on deck, which brought back Cassian as a trauma surgeon and Agnes as a top neurologist to join forces with Reynolds and Wilder. Daniel Dae Kim didn’t get a lot of screen time, but the actor was evidently willing to accommodate the show for however he was needed. Given that his character didn’t get a particularly big farewell, one last check-in was nice before the final credits rolled. 

That said, there is one particularly notable character who didn’t get their one last check-in. According to the executive producers, it wasn't for lack of trying. When asked if there were any cameos they were hoping for but ultimately didn’t work out, EP Peter Horton immediately said “Freema,” and David Schulner elaborated:

Freema Agyeman’s final appearance in New Amsterdam proved to be Episode 11 (directed by Peter Horton), when she returned to New York briefly and wanted to spend some time with Max. The show had to recycle footage from past seasons, however, and the last scenes that she filmed were for Season 4. She did lend her voice to the Season 5 premiere, though! So, what did the EPs have to say about how her story ended?

Why Helen's Ending 'Wasn't On Purpose'

With Freema Agyeman not making an appearance in the finale, the last that fans heard about Helen was that she skewed a cancer drug trial to focus on predominately white participants, with the assumed goal that she did it to get Max the drugs he needed to save his life because she loved him. Helen wasn’t able to give her side of the story, but Max and Wilder deemed it unethical and established that they wouldn’t have done the same thing. 

It was a surprising twist that fans couldn’t have seen coming ahead of Episode 12, which was the first of two episodes that aired on finale night. The executive producers opened up about how they came up with that ending for Helen’s character, with David Schulner saying:

The bosses had previously teased that “closure is never closure” after Max decided not to see Helen again and instead pursue a future with Wilder. According to Schulner, the drug trial story came before the decision to incorporate Helen into it rather than planning this storyline for Helen and then brainstorming the drug trial. It painted her character in a different light than when fans last saw her in the Season 4 finale, and Peter Horton explained his perspective on it:

The love story of Sharpwin ultimately didn’t prove to be endgame for New Amsterdam, but the show also didn’t end with Max settling down in any romantic relationship. In fact, there was originally a clue about his choice that was ultimately cut from the finale, with the message clear that he was prioritizing Luna over anybody and anything else.

Spoilers ahead for the last two episodes of New Amsterdam on NBC, called “Right Place” and “How Can I Help?”

New Amsterdam has officially come to an end, fittingly with an episode titled “How Can I Help?” and featuring the doctors coming together and pulling out all the stops to save a mother's life. They pulled the nearly impossible surgery off, at the cost of Max not being able to take Luna to the mermaid parade before they moved to Geneva for him to take a job with the World Health Organization. The series didn’t end with Max asking a whole new crowd how he can help, but there was a Goodwin making a speech: a surprise flash-forward revealed adult Luna as the new medical director at New Amsterdam! 

Executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton spoke with CinemaBlend about the surprise ending, and a Max moment that didn’t make the cut for the finale. Young Luna spent most of the episode upset with her dad for not taking her to the mermaid parade, until he finally explained that everybody had to come together to save somebody’s mom. He promised that she’d never remember this day anyway, but that wasn’t the case after all. It would be the day that she realized she wanted to be a doctor, leading to a final scene of a grown up Luna taking her father’s former place as medical director. 

David Schulner – who also co-wrote the series finale – opened up about how the show landed on the adult Luna reveal as the end, saying: 

New Amsterdam was officially cancelled back in March 2022, while Season 4 was still airing. The silver lining was that there was still one full (albeit shorter than usual) season left, with thirteen episodes to build up to the end. Apparently, the first person to throw their support behind the adult Luna twist was none other than David Schulner’s daughter! As she wasn’t exactly a staff writer at the age of 11, Schulner wasn’t immediately on board, but she wasn’t the only one pitching this final scene. The EP continued:

If three people independently came up with the same ending, how could the executive producers go with anything else? It’s no wonder that actor Jocko Sims described the series’ conclusion as “a wonderful ending that puts a nice, beautiful bow on this wonderful journey we’ve had.” Schulner went on: 

It was inevitable that New Amsterdam would need a new medical director after the reveal that Max was relocating to Geneva. Not many fans likely predicted that Max’s final scene would actually just be a quiet moment with his daughter, and she would ultimately get the last scene of the show. According to executive producer Peter Horton, Max’s final moment had to be about making a choice: 

While Max’s relationship with Wilder had been going well and he even got some degree of closure about his former romance with Helen, there was only one person who he could prioritize over everybody else: his daughter. The finale ended before revealing what their life is like after they leave New York, but I like to imagine that it has included at least one mermaid parade. 

Of course, Max’s final scene with Wilder left the door open for him to potentially return someday, and there were no hard feelings that he was leaving. Whether he actually ever did is a blank that New Amsterdam just didn’t fill in. When I asked the executive producers if there was an answer as to whether or not he came back, David Schulner said:

There was an ending that would have shed some more light on Max’s future beyond his departure from New Amsterdam as medical director, but was ultimately cut. According to Schulner, letting viewers imagine their own scenario works better than giving a hard answer one way or the other. Peter Horton shared another perk of not definitively answering every single question:

New Amsterdam had happy endings to go around with the series finale. Gabrielle decided to stay in New York with Reynolds, and fans got to see a glimpse of the whole family gathered together, looking much happier than in the earlier flashback. Iggy and Martin remarried each other, fulfilling Tyler Labine’s high hopes for their relationship. Bloom reunited with her sister at an NA meeting after getting a clearer picture of the new life (and new apartment) that she wants to build for herself. Even Daniel Dae Kim turned up one last time as Dr. Cassian Shin! 

Wilder’s future was a little less clear, but she seemed more or less at peace with Max’s decision. Plus, even though there wasn’t enough time for the show to reveal much about adult Luna, I think it’s safe to say that she’s not going to be a medical director like Veronica Fuentes in Season 4. 

As for whether New Amsterdam will ever return to NBC… well, fans can always hope. Ryan Eggold has already landed a new TV show, so he won’t be absent from the small screen for too long. The end is already nigh for New Amsterdam, as the show returned in 2023 with just three episodes left, and two airing on the same night. The fifth and final season will conclude with two episodes on January 17, which means NBC devoting nearly a full night of primetime to fans getting to say goodbye to Max and Co. With the hours counting down until the beginning of the end, executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton spoke about the last two episodes.

The end has been hyped as a two-hour finale event in promos on NBC, and fans have known for months that New Amsterdam would get a bigger farewell than just the usual one episode per Tuesday night. When I spoke with the executive producers ahead of the finale and asked if it was always the plan for a two-parter at the very end, David Schulner responded: 

While the finale is able to be promoted as a two-hour event, that wasn’t the original plan and fans evidently shouldn’t go into Tuesday night expecting Episode 12 and Episode 13 to feel like two halves of a whole, with one flowing right into the next. Peter Horton elaborated on the situation:

New Amsterdam didn’t air last week due to the Golden Globes taking over NBC to reveal the winners with Jerrod Carmichael as host after the awards were not broadcast on television in 2022. The Golden Globes took up all three hours of primetime, which meant that the medical drama had to take the week off. 

The final two airing back-to-back means that the one that aired back on January 3 (directed by Peter Horton) was more or less the penultimate episode, and a whole lot happened in the span of the hour. On top of an outdoors adventure going horribly wrong for the doctors (complete with a guide who lost her leg and a head wound for Iggy), Max had to face the test of whether or not he would see Helen again. 

Max ultimately decided not to see his former fiancée, and instead went to Wilder to confirm to her that he wants a future with her rather than dwelling on the past with Helen. The New Amsterdam bosses have weighed in on whether that was enough for Max to get closure. David Schulner shared his thoughts on how well Episode 11 works as the penultimate episode, saying:

New Amsterdam and Game of Thrones may not exactly exist in the same genre of television, but David Schulner is optimistic about Episode 11 working perfectly as a setup for the finale, even though that wasn’t the original plan. The executive producers also aren’t the only ones from the show who have been hyping what to look forward to in how the medical drama wraps. Jocko Sims, who plays Reynolds, shared that he was excited for fans to learn more about the doctors and their pasts, while Tyler Labine – a.k.a. Iggy – explained what he hopes makes fans happy with the ending.

Helen returning and reaching out stressed Max out enough that he was ready to leave the hospital for an ill-fated day in the wilderness, but ultimately gave him the clarity to realize that he wanted to pursue a future with Wilder rather than revisit the relationship that ended in heartbreak. When the executive producers spoke with CinemaBlend about the final episodes of the series, I asked if Episode 11 gave Max closure or if there’s still time in the two-part finale event for some curveballs about Helen, and Peter Horton said: 

Helen’s return to New York didn’t mean a new heartfelt Sharpwin scene to give Max some more answers than he got from the letter that involved actress Freema Agyeman participating in the Season 5 premiere. That wasn’t altogether surprising after the reveal that New Amsterdam wanted to bring Helen back more to test Max’s resolve than restart their relationship. Time was running out in the serise! After ten episodes of trying to move forward, he finally achieved it in Episode 11, with two more left to go. According to David Schulner, Max will never just forget her: 

Max actually went through the heartache of losing a woman he deeply loved early in the series, when wife Georgia died in a horrific accident. It took some time for him to be able to move forward without any feelings of guilt; would he have taken more time with Wilder if time wasn’t running out with the series finale approaching quickly? Whatever happens in those last two episodes, the executive producer established that the women he has loved stay with him. 

New Amsterdam does still have a lot to do before the final credits roll, between all of the storylines that are still ongoing and what actor Jocko Sims said about the last episodes delving into the pasts of the doctors more. The end is sadly nigh for New Amsterdam, and the NBC medical drama still has unanswered questions heading toward the two-part series finale. According to what more than one star has had to say, however, there’s a lot to look forward to with the end. Jocko Sims hyped fans learning more about the doctors’ pasts, and Tyler Labine has opened up about his hopes for how fans will react to the last episodes. 

Labine has been playing Dr. Iggy Frome from the very beginning of the medical drama, and recently weighed in on portraying Iggy through his series of “regrettable decisions.” When the actor spoke with CinemaBlend, he opened up about reading the script for the series finale and what viewers can expect:

It sounds like fans shouldn’t go into the finale on January 17 expecting straightforward answers to every question and every loose end neatly tied off by the time the final credits roll, which isn’t always the case for shows that have time to plan ahead for the end. 

Tyler Labine’s comments do suggest that a lot of careful planning went into doing the characters justice, so it’s no surprise that he has hopes that fans will be happy! The actor went on to preview that viewers may want to expect the unexpected with the finale:

The last episode before the two-part finale set up the end in some interesting ways, whether or not definitive answers are on the way for everybody. The return of Helen Sharpe didn’t result in a reunion with Max with sparks flying for Sharpwin again, but instead gave Max some clarity about pursuing a relationship with Elizabeth. Iggy’s blow to the head in the woods helped him realize that he needed to sign the divorce papers to officially split with Martin, but that he also wanted a fresh start with him. 

For his part, Reynolds may have a future with Gabrielle after all if he just asks her to stay, and Bloom seems to be healing after the heartache with her sister. Plus, with two hours left before the very end, there’s still time for Max “How Can I Help?” Goodwin to do some more good at the hospital. As for what New Amsterdam has in store for the doctors’ endings after five seasons, fans will just have to tune in and find out. 

The two-part series finale event for New Amsterdam will air on Tuesday, January 17 starting at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, with past episodes available streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription. Only one night of New Amsterdam is left after the events of “Falling,” which set the stage for how the series finale could close up the characters’ stories. Max faced his “real test” about choosing between Helen and Elizabeth, while Reynolds is facing the hurdle of Gabrielle possibly leaving New York (plus some radiation exposure). As for Iggy, he had to do some head wound-induced reflection on what he wants after making a lot of what actor Tyler Labine dubbed “regrettable decisions." He came to a conclusion about Martin, and Labine spoke with CinemaBlend about Iggy’s journey, and his hopes for the character. 

Iggy’s character was in a state of flux for quite a while before he came to the conclusion at the end of Season 4 that he wanted to take a break from his marriage. After trying to date again in Season 5 and then realizing that he wanted his family and marriage back, he was instead served with divorce papers. His emotional journey has been bumpy enough that he seemed in need of an intervention back in the fall, and when I spoke with Tyler Labine about New Amsterdam, he weighed in on whether fans should still be rooting for Iggy and Martin:

Iggy’s head wound after the rockslide in “Falling” ultimately brought him some clarity about how he had to stop avoiding the inevitable of the divorce papers. Even when Martin said that they could talk about it later instead of when he was recovering from injuries, Iggy signed the papers and handed them over. That didn’t mean that he gave up on their relationship, however, as he followed up by asking Martin out on a date. The marriage chapter has seemingly come to a close, but that doesn’t 100% mean the end of the story. Labine continued:

The episode ended without revealing whether or not Martin would go on a date with Iggy, and his expression was pretty ambiguous. That said, as Tyler Labine pointed out, their lives are tied together forever because of their kids, and they still love each other. Will Iggy signing the divorce papers and then trying to start over work to rekindle their romance into something even healthier? Or is it too late, and they’ll have to settle for co-parenting?

Only time will tell on that front, even though there’s not a whole lot of time left before New Amsterdam comes to an end on January 17. In light of Tyler Labine noting that he doesn’t necessarily agree with how Iggy handles situations, I asked if that’s challenging to play, and he shared:

Iggy certainly isn’t the only New Amsterdam character who has shown signs of struggle over the seasons since the doctors had to deal with COVID, and some have dealt better than others. Of course, as Labine said, Iggy’s scenes are only glimpses of the character’s life, and New Amsterdam is largely an ensemble show with a lot of stories to tell. That doesn’t mean that Iggy’s storylines haven't been frustrating for some, though! The actor went on to explain why it’s fun to play somebody who’s not perfect:

Iggy hiring dreamy Australian nurse Trevor was arguably the straw that broke the marriage, which wasn’t altogether shocking as soon as Martin found out about how close their relationship had become. Iggy had to face the consequences of hiring the man who had flirted with him as far back as the job interview. It’s hard to say if Iggy and Martin would have split if not for the Trevor fiasco, but it sure didn’t help!

For now, fans can only hope that Iggy and Martin find a happy status quo before the final credits roll on the series finale, which airs in just a couple of weeks. Max seems set on a happy ending of his own after Helen’s return gave him some clarity about wanting to pursue his relationship with Elizabeth, and actor Jocko Sims previewed what fans can look forward to before the medical drama concludes for good.

New Amsterdam is finally on the verge of returning to NBC in the 2023 TV premiere schedule, but the end is nigh for the medical drama. With the series finale airing in just a couple of weeks, there are plenty of stories that have yet to be resolved. The fall finale revealed that Helen is back in town just as Max was ready to move forward with a relationship with Elizabeth as one more complication before the end, and actor Tyler Labine previewed to CinemaBlend what’s on the way in 2023. 

Helen didn’t appear in the flesh in the final episode of 2022, but Freema Agyeman appeared in footage with the character giving an interview on TV. The promo for the winter premiere on January 3 reveals that Helen will reach out to Max via text at the very least, and he’s not in the same state of mind that he was at the beginning of the season. 

When Tyler Labine, who has played Iggy through that character’s considerable highs and lows over the past five seasons, spoke with CinemaBlend, he weighed in on what Helen’s return means for Max and the rest:

Fans can be happy to hear that Max’s friends will be there for him, especially after they went the extra mile to support him in the aftermath of Helen’s departure. They all have a lot on their plates at the moment, but evidently not so much that they can’t help him. After all, losing Helen was arguably the biggest blow for Max over the years other than Georgia’s death, so some “fallout” and “heaviness”  may have been inevitable. 

Tyler Labine went on to say that it’s “the same with Iggy,” and the reactions to Helen coming back to New York at this point near the end of Season 5 may not be the same as if she’d returned at the beginning:

In addition to the longtime friends he has been able to lean on, Max formed a close bond with Elizabeth that very nearly blossomed into a real romance... right before he found out that Helen was back in town, which will put those feelings to the test. It sounds like he’ll have some big decisions to make, and if the five seasons so far have proven anything, it’s that the mantra of “How can I help?” doesn’t mean that Max always finds a happy ending. 

Of course, Jocko Sims (who plays Dr. Reynolds) also previewed that fans will get to know “a little bit more about the doctors” and their pasts, leading to “a wonderful ending that puts a nice, beautiful bow on this wonderful journey.” That certainly doesn’t sound like an unhappy ending to the medical drama! When I noted to Tyler Labine that Max has had an up-and-down season when it comes to relationships, the actor shared:

Freema Agyeman’s decision to leave after Season 4 meant an end to the beloved Sharpwin relationship, although the show did go out of the way to drop clues along the way that a happily-ever-after might not be in the cards for them. There was a full season left before the end, and New Amsterdam decided to let Max try to move on. As Tyler Labine said, it’s a “very human” thing for Max, but also raises some questions about how he’ll handle the “real test” on the way with Helen’s return.

Ryan Eggold has been busy on NBC for the past five TV seasons as star of New Amsterdam, but the upcoming end of that series means the actor is moving on. Now, he has officially landed a major TV followup, and it's safe to say that his new character is a far cry from Max "How Can I Help?" Goodwin on the NBC medical drama. 

The actor has landed a role in Cross, a new project coming to Amazon Prime based on the best-selling Alex Cross books penned by prolific author James Patterson about a forensic psychologist/detective of the same name with a knack for catching murderers. Deadline reports that Ryan Eggold will play a charming Midwesterner by the name of Ed Ramsey, who is an ally of Cross... to start, at least! 

Ramsey is keeping some secrets of his own while also maintaining connections with the powerful in New York and Washington D.C., and can come across as a physical threat at times. Max Goodwin would never! Ed Ramsey will be a very different kind of character than the doctor who Ryan Eggold has been playing for five seasons, although perhaps some of the actor's action experience from The Blacklist will come in handy. Eggold is a series regular for Cross. 

Cross stars Black Adam alum Aldis Hodge as the titular Alex Cross, who evidently won't be able to count on Eggold's Ed Ramsey as a friend for too long. The detective loves his children but is a changed man since the murder of his wife. Brilliant and obsessive while also struggling with his own issues, he should be a fascinating main character for the new project, which has already received a series order. Isaiah Mustafa (best known for playing adult Mike Hanlon in the It Chapter Two cast) is another new series regular, playing John Sampson as Alex's longtime partner and best friend.

No details are available just yet about when Cross will begin production or expected to premiere on Amazon Prime, but Ryan Eggold will still have a place in primetime in the new year before the end of New Amsterdam. The medical drama already finished in 2022 with a two-part fall finale with some brutal developments and a very surprising return, and one star previewed a "wonderful ending" to the series that fans should be excited about. 

Unfortunately, the medical drama will end fairly early in the 2023 TV premiere schedule. New Amsterdam's first episode of the new year will air on Tuesday, January 3 in its usual 10 p.m. ET time slot on NBC, before taking a week off and then returning for a two-hour finale event. Only three episodes are left before the end (although fans can revisit the earlier seasons streaming with a Peacock Premium subscription).

As for Cross... well, the upcoming show might not be ready for some time, but Amazon has a good track record with TV adaptations of popular book series after Jack Ryan (based on Tom Clancy's series of novels) and Reacher (based on Jim Grant's series of novels). If James Patterson's books prove to be the right kind of source material to be turned into this TV show, then Cross could be the next hit show to feature Ryan Eggold. The end is nigh for New Amsterdam, with only three episodes left after the medical drama returns in 2023, with two of those episodes airing back-to-back on one night for a series finale event. While fans may be sad that the journeys for Max, Reynolds, Bloom, and all the rest are nearly over, actor Jocko Sims has revealed that there’s still a lot to look forward to before the final credits roll.

The last two episodes of 2022 aired back-to-back for one big fall finale, which delivered twists ranging from Reynolds making a “brutal” decision (which Jocko Sims has explained) to Bloom coming to a painful realization about her sister to Max learning that Helen has returned to New York just when he was on the verge of overcoming all the hurdles to starting a relationship with Wilder. 

The fall finale didn’t exactly close on a happy ending for all the characters, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the same will be true for the series finale in the new year. Jocko Sims spoke with CinemaBlend about what’s on the way, and he previewed what fans can still look forward to in the final episodes:   

Well, it certainly sounds like New Amsterdam won’t join the ranks of shows with disappointing finales, if the medical drama is getting a “nice, beautiful bow” before the end! And what better way for this show to end than by embracing the theme of “How can I help?” that has been so important from the very beginning? Jocko Sims’ mention of “generations to come” is particularly interesting in light of young Luna getting some of the spotlight this season.

Only time will tell just how much the final three episodes reveal about the characters and what makes them who they are, but the actor’s comments suggest that there’s a lot to be optimistic about. Whether or not that means completely happy endings for everybody – which may be hard to imagine after how the fall finale ended – is a question that just won’t be answered until 2023. 

After revealing that playing Dr. Reynolds has been the best job of his career, Jocko Sims went on to share his excitement about the very last episode:

When we spoke ahead of the fall finale airing, even Jocko Sims didn’t know exactly what the script had in store from the first page to the last, since he was waiting for the table read! Unfortunately for fans who are already dying to know how New Amsterdam picks up after the shocking reveal that Freema Agyeman had filmed at least one new scene for the show when it had seemed possible that her voice cameo in the premiere was the most that we’d get of Helen in Season 5, the medical drama won’t return until the 2023 TV premiere schedule kicks off.

Be sure to tune in to NBC on Tuesday, January 3 at 10 p.m. ET for the winter premiere of New Amsterdam, with the two-part finale airing two weeks later on January 17. Reynolds alone still has a lot of threads to tie off before the end, even with the emotional scene that had to be deleted and the steps he has taken to move on from his polyamorous relationship to start fresh with Gabrielle.

The fall finale of New Amsterdam was an emotional one, to say the least, as Lauren dealt with her sister overdosing, and Elizabeth Wilder tried to figure out if she should accept a new job offer that would have her leave the hospital, to name just two of the twists. Perhaps the biggest emotional shocker of the episode was the fact that when Max and Elizabeth finally found their groove together, Helen appeared on a late-night talk show, and it was revealed she’s in the city.

Fans will remember that when Max and Helen were getting ready to wed in the Season 4 finale, Helen heartbreakingly called Max from London, indicating she couldn’t go through with it. Freema Agyeman announced her departure and it was unclear if she would return before the medical drama ended. The episode shook things up for New Amsterdam, and Max was on his way to healing. With her shocking return, showrunner David Schulner tells TVLine why they decided to bring Helen back for the fall finale:

Although I do wish it could have happened at any other time, it does make sense to bring Helen back at a time when Max has started to move on. It was clear by his expression when he saw Helen on TV and heard she was back in New York that some feelings are still there, but how that will impact his relationship with Elizabeth should be interesting as the series winds down.

As for whether or not Helen’s return will make Max realize he still does want her (or does not) has yet to be seen, but David Schulner explains that his heart will be tested:

Max was heartbroken after losing Helen, and his daughter Luna was also taking it quite hard as she had warmed up to having a mum. Seeing how the show pays off on this twist is particularly interesting with the show ending soon and Wilder not taking the job away from the hospital. Whoever Max chooses will presumably be his endgame. It’s unknown how much the former couple have talked, if at all, since they parted ways, but when the show comes back in the new year, true feelings will be revealed. 

Meanwhile, New Amsterdam is getting a big farewell in 2023, but it will, unfortunately, be sooner than fans might hope. There are only three episodes left, with a two-hour series finale on January 17. While it is part of the 2023 TV schedule, fans will have to say goodbye to their favorite characters before the first month of the year comes to an end. How it ends, though, is still up in the air.

Spoilers ahead for Episodes 9 and 10 of New Amsterdam Season 5, called “The Empty Spaces” and “Don’t Do This For Me.”

New Amsterdam is heading into its winter hiatus after a double dose of hospital drama, and the two episodes delivered everything from Max causing chaos with survey results to the return of Helen Sharpe (kind of) to Reynolds making decisions that ranged from brutal to heartfelt. Now, looking ahead to the final episodes that will air in the 2023 TV schedule, star Jocko Sims opened up to CinemaBlend about a bad call that Reynolds made, as well as challenges ahead with Gabrielle. 

After these two episodes, Reynolds and Gabrielle have moved from flirting to virtual hookups to ready to hook up in person, with the initial complication that he was still looking after his dad. Jocko Sims previously opened up about whether his character could move on from his polyamorous romance to get started with Gabrielle. While they’ve now seemingly started a relationship and Horace removed himself as an obstacle, there’s still a very big hurdle to Reynolds getting the long term relationship that he’s been looking for. 

The actor previewed what’s ahead for Reynolds and Gabrielle before the final credits roll on the series in the new year, saying: 

As of the midseason finale, Gabrielle only had a few weeks left before her job as a traveling nurse would take her somewhere else, and there’s no sign just yet that she’s going to change her mind about moving on. Jocko Sims presented the interesting option of Reynolds traveling with her, even though that didn’t work with Evie. Of course, he left to be with Evie when New Amsterdam was still going strong, so it seemed inevitable that he’d return somehow. With only a few episodes of the medical drama left, it’s possible that he could make a permanent decision to stay or leave. 

That said, he made some questionable decisions in this two-parter when a young pregnant woman came to the hospital, desperate to give birth ASAP because she believed that she’d kill her unborn child by relapsing into her drug habit. When Reynolds and Gabrielle learned that she was only 23 weeks along and would have to go at least three more weeks before they could induce, Olivette became very upset and wanted to leave. While Gabrielle tried to calm her down, Reynolds called security because she was a danger to herself and her child, putting her on an involuntary hold.

Gabrielle had words with him about it, including shouting out The Handmaid’s Tale by asking him if “this is Gilead” and pointing out that Olivette would still be allowed to terminate her pregnancy at 23 weeks without being detained if she so chose. She raised the point that the child would be at every disadvantage if they did things his way. Luckily, she eventually got through to him, and they instead set up a system of nurses who would support her in everything she needed to bring her baby to term. 

Interestingly, this case came not too long after the episode about the Supreme Court decision about reproductive health, when Reynolds learned that Bloom had an abortion while they were in a relationship. When asked if he thought his character would have handled the situation differently before that episode, Jocko Sims shared: 

Even Jocko Sims thinks it was a “brutal” decision to try and have Olivette committed when all she needed was somebody to listen to her! Luckily, his character had Gabrielle to show him what he was doing wrong, and he cared enough to listen and change. The actor went on: 

He went on to support Bloom and her situation with her overdosed sister in the second episode, and had a breakthrough with his dad that could mean Horace is on the mend for good. Will this clear the path for him to enjoy a relationship with Gabrielle before they have to make a decision about her departure? And will he be able to keep his relationship with his father going strong? There was a scene involving father and son that had to be deleted earlier this season!

New Amsterdam will return in the new year on Tuesday, January 3 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, ahead of a two-part series finale event just a couple of weeks later. Helen’s return to New York may have shaken up Max in his determination to start a relationship with Elizabeth Wilder, although it remains to be seen if they share any scenes or he simply has to face his feelings because he saw her on TV. 

Dr. Floyd Reynolds has been fairly unlucky in love over the years of New Amsterdam, even after the future seemed bright for a time with Evie. His love life became immensely complicated once he started falling for Dr. Lyn Malvo, which led to a polyamorous relationship with her husband, made all the more complicated by a pregnancy. Now, as Season 5 approaches its end, Reynolds has his eye on traveling nurse Gabrielle, and Jocko Sims has weighed in on whether he has a shot at a normal relationship with her. 

The breakup with Lyn still left some strings attached due to her pregnancy and the very real feelings that endured despite Reynolds struggling with the polyamory, and his decision to say goodbye to her actually set him on the path to reach out to his father. After the monumental changes in his life due to his previous romance, Jocko Sims spoke with CinemaBlend about how his approach with Gabrielle is different:

It seems that Reynolds can’t fall for a woman without some kind of complication possibly getting in the way! He even recently found out that Bloom had an abortion while they were together, which happened several years ago. Gabrielle’s status as a traveling nurse should mean that any relationship would be temporary, but a strong connection is a big draw. Perhaps going in with an open mind could result in a happier ending than he had with Lyn!

Of course, there is a limited number of episodes left before New Amsterdam comes to an end, so Reynolds may need to get a move on if he’s going to begin a romance with Gabrielle before the final credits roll. When I asked if he learned anything from the relationship with Lyn that he could apply to possibly starting from the beginning with Gabrielle, Sims shared:

Giving romance a shot instead of shooting the idea down just because of her job is something that he might not have done in earlier days of the show, and Gabrielle may be just who he needs after evolving over the previous four seasons. It seems unlikely that Lyn will be back before the end, and Gabrielle could help him to a good place before the series comes to a close. 

Fans will get to see more of Reynolds than usual this week, with two episodes airing in the wake of La Brea’s midseason finale opening up the earlier time slot. Be sure to tune in to NBC on Tuesday, November 22 starting at 9 p.m. ET for a double dose of New Amsterdam! On top of the latest with Reynolds and his situations with both Gabrielle and his father, the medical drama has set up some major storylines for the other characters ahead of the finale. 

Max in particular made a big move to try and move on from his relationship with Helen with somebody he feels a strong connection with, but Dr. Wilder shot down his invitation out on a date immediately. Whether that was truly the end of what seemed to be a budding romance remains to be seen! 

Dr. Floyd Reynolds has dealt with a lot of curveballs in New Amsterdam’s fifth and final season, ranging from learning that Dr. Bloom had an abortion during their relationship to once again starting to fall for a woman who might just complicate his life even more to his father reentering his life. While he and Bloom are on good terms and the immediate future seems bright enough for him and Gabrielle, the issues with his father have forced him to make some tough decisions. According to Jocko Sims, a scene showing the toll of those decisions had to be cut. 

Reynolds realized earlier in Season 5 that his father’s lifetime of erratic behavior could be due to a case of undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, Horace took the unofficial diagnosis as more of an excuse than motivation to seek treatment, and the situation escalated to the point that Reynolds had his father put on an involuntary psych hold at the hospital. In the latest episode, called “All the World’s a Stage…,” a judge determined that Horace wasn’t allowed to go home yet despite some improvement, and his son stepped up and volunteered to take him in and look after him. 

While noble, Reynolds volunteering also seemed somewhat impulsive. When actor Jocko Sims recently spoke with CinemaBlend about New Amsterdam, he weighed in on whether his character knew what he was getting into, and the emotional scene that didn’t make the cut. He shared: 

Unfortunately, there just wasn’t time for the scene of Reynolds reacting to his father having an episode, but the good doctor volunteering to take Horace in is proof that his dad’s predicament really was weighing on him. It remains to be seen what their relationship will be like living together, though! While Floyd volunteering to bring Horace back to his home and take care of him was a deeply caring move, Floyd is also the reason why Horace was put on an involuntary psych hold in the first place. 

Fans will have to tune in to the upcoming episodes on NBC (or stream next day with a Peacock subscription) to see exactly what’s in store for the Reynolds men, but the actor dropped some clues about what to expect. When I asked what the two characters are like as roommates after Reynolds made the big decision to open up his home, Jocko Sims previewed:

Reynolds really went from having no relationship with Horace to living with Horace and facing some fatherly advice (whether he likes it or not) pretty quickly! It wasn’t that long ago that the two men were completely estranged, after all, so it’s interesting to learn that Floyd is determined to keep building that relationship even with the added complications of the psych hold and now shared home. 

Find out just how Reynolds adapts to having his father in his home (and if that means anything for his budding romance with travel nurse Gabrielle) with the next new episode of New Amsterdam at a special time on Tuesday, November 22 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, taking the usual place of La Brea, which recently aired its eventful fall finale. 

A second episode of New Amsterdam will also air at 10 p.m. ET, so be sure to plan on double the medical drama on Tuesday night! The show is scheduled to end in the 2023 TV schedule with another two-hour event, which is either good news or bad news, depending on how you look at it!

Spoilers ahead for Episode 8 of New Amsterdam Season 5, called “All the World’s a Stage…”

The ED was overrun by teenage beauty queens in New Amsterdam’s latest episode, but Max’s struggles didn’t involve any of the young women injured by the collapsing stage. After some ups and downs with trying to mediate between the bequests department and a veteran whose mother had donated her home to the hospital, he ended up with as close to a compromise as was possible. He seemed ready to celebrate with Elizabeth Wilder by the conclusion of the hour, but she shut him down in his first earnest attempt to move on after Helen. He was certainly sad about it, but I’d say that it’s a good thing. 

Max and Elizabeth have been slowly but surely getting closer throughout the fifth and final season, to the point that it seemed inevitable that she would be the first woman he fell for after the abrupt end to his relationship with Helen. They were hanging out at the end of “All the World’s a Stage…” and chatting back and forth via typing on a computer, when he suggested dinner. She was all-in… when she thought he meant ordering in for a friendly takeout meal. When he clarified that he was thinking they’d go to Benihana “like a date,” she immediately said “no,” with no hesitation. 

While I can’t say that I’m rooting for Max to get disappointment after disappointment in Season 5 (especially with episodes quickly running out), Elizabeth not immediately saying yes so that the two could head out on a date before the end of the episode seems like the best scenario for both of them... as well as for fans who may still be hung up on Helen and Sharpwin.

In the grand scheme of things, Max’s relationship with the woman he intended to marry and considered the mother of his daughter ended just months ago, with little to no closure. Fans saw the Sharpwin relationship slowly burn and build before they finally got together, and it might have been hard to buy Max just happily moving on to a new potential romance so soon with ease. Even accounting for the firm foundation of friendship with Elizabeth that made Max comfortable enough to make a move, he may not have fully thought it through. 

And even if he was 100% ready to move on by the end of “All the World’s a Stage,” Elizabeth might not necessarily know that, and she may also have more practical concerns. After all, he is the medical director and therefore her boss at New Amsterdam. Max and Helen got away with it easily enough thanks to their decision to leave New York and move to London, but it could be a problem for Elizabeth. 

Plus, the series hasn’t really shown her in a relationship, and the catastrophic karaoke episode of Season 4 suggested that she preferred casual hookups at the time. Her scenes with Max in Season 5 have been flirty but not explicitly romantic, so neither was leading the other on. No matter what her reason was for saying no, I think it was for the best at this point in time. The characters are sweet together and seem to be a solid match, but there are some issues that should at least be addressed before they get together. 

Even if New Amsterdam doesn’t have a checklist of complications to resolve (and workplace relationships are par for the course in primetime), it wouldn’t have felt right if Max made his big step forward from his heartbreak with Helen so casually at the end of an episode. If and when he moves on, there should be more to it than an invitation to Benihana at the end of a work day, and they should both be ready.

All of this said, I do enjoy the dynamic between Max and Elizabeth, and can’t imagine a better choice for him to have another shot at romantic happiness in the remaining episodes of the series. Her turning down the date this week might just be the beginning of the show fleshing their relationship out.

News broke before the fourth season ended that New Amsterdam would wrap with a fifth and final season of just thirteen episodes. While the early cancellation meant that the team behind the scenes could use Season 5 to build to the ending instead of having to scramble at the last minute, fans have had to watch each episode knowing that the end is nigh. Now, NBC has made an announcement that means a big farewell for the medical drama… but it’s not all good news. 

New Amsterdam will get to end its final season with a two-hour series finale on Tuesday, January 17. It’s not clear if the show will plan on making it a cinematic two-hour event or just air two separate episodes back-to-back, but a two-hour finale means that the medical drama is getting some special treatment on its way out, and hopefully with a happy ending! Even if it’s sad for fans that the show is ending, at least it seems that it’s getting a finale to be excited about. 

The downside is simply that we’re now one week closer to the very end than it seemed before the announcement of the two-hour finale. At the time of writing, seven of the final season’s thirteen episodes have already aired, with only six episodes left. Now, the show will end one week earlier than expected. Sure, we’ll still get all thirteen episodes, but the end is coming sooner. 

Personally, I’m not sure how New Amsterdam will wrap up all the dangling plot threads in just six more episodes, but it should be fun to find out. Max was able to move forward pretty quickly after the heartache of losing Helen, and has formed a growing bond with Dr. Wilder. Iggy’s relationship complications didn’t end with his declaration to Martin at the close of Season 4, and it seems that the show may be building to the two getting back together. It wasn’t that long ago that Iggy seemed like he needed an intervention! 

Plus, Reynolds building a relationship with his dad has been complicated as well in light of his dad’s mental health struggles, and he still hasn’t been able to find the romantic partner who would be the right fit. Bloom (whose storyline about abortion was one of the most powerful of the episode about reproductive rights) has been trying to reconnect with her sister, who is still struggling with the substance abuse problems that Bloom herself managed to overcome earlier in the series. 

While there are more questions than answers about what happens next, it seems safe to say that the remaining episodes leading up to the two-hour finale will be quite eventful. Based on the promo for the next episode – called “All The World’s A Stage” – the show will revisit Bloom’s issues with drugs. Take a look:

Spoilers ahead for Episode 7 of New Amsterdam Season 5, called “Maybe Tomorrow.”

The fifth season of New Amsterdam hasn’t been easy on the doctors, and “Maybe Tomorrow” delivered a twist that left them all reeling. This wasn’t a twist like Helen getting cold feet or a storm threatening the lives of everybody at the hospital, but a story based on a real life event: the Supreme Court decision about reproductive rights. The doctors were all devastated that their patients won’t be able to get treatments they need and make choices they deserved because of the ruling, and the series showed the impact of the decision through three perspectives: Bloom, Brantley, and Wilder. 

Lauren Bloom And Her Decisions For Herself

Bloom and Reynolds were teamed up for “Maybe Tomorrow” as they led a group of potential medical students on a tour of the hospital, but it was complicated when she let it slip that she’d gotten pregnant and had an abortion without telling him back when they were dating. Reynolds kept wanting to talk about it while she kept shutting him down, until she spelled it out for him: him wanting to talk about it was making the abortion about him, rather than him asking her how she felt about it. 

Reynolds immediately softened and asked how she felt about it, and sensed that she  wasn't being entirely open with her insistence that it didn’t really mean anything. She finally opened up by the end of the episode when one of the potential doctors asked Bloom and Reynolds how they took them on the whole tour without addressing Roe v. Wade. Bloom came out and revealed that she’d had two abortions in her life: once after being date raped in college and once after dating Reynolds (although not mentioning him by name).

She made the point that she did what was right for her because it was her choice, and suggested that they go into obstetrics and gynecology. From Bloom’s perspective, a person deserves the choice to get an abortion if they want to and they should have the right to do so safely and quickly. 

Karen Brantley And Her Fight

It was clear from the beginning that the issue hit close to home for Brantley, as she gave Max carte blanche to use the hospital’s resources to try and fix it. Max had to point out that even his best efforts wouldn’t be enough to defeat a ruling from the Supreme Court, but he tried anyway until even he was out of ideas. When he broke the news to her, she opened up about why the issue was so important to her. 

She was in college in 1968, several years before Roe v. Wade would legalize abortion in 1973. A friend of hers who was a brilliant pre-law student became pregnant, and the father abandoned her. She took her friend to an illegal abortion site, and it was a horrifying ordeal that resulted in a lot of blood. 

Brantley didn’t confirm that her friend had died, but that was the implication, and she revealed that it motivated her to march and fight for the original legalization. She and the others who fought for Roe v. Wade in the first place won nearly fifty years ago, and now had to watch a whole new generation lose those rights in 2022.

Elizabeth Wilder And Her Patient

Dr. Wilder spent the episode trying to treat a pregnant woman named Michelle, whose cervical cancer would kill her without chemotherapy. Unfortunately, Michelle had been celebrating the overturn of Roe v. Wade before coming to the hospital that day, meaning that she was willing to die rather than accept the chemotherapy treatment that would save her but terminate the pregnancy. Wilder’s priority was saving the patient’s life, but couldn’t convince her to sacrifice the pregnancy so that she could live. 

Wilder came up with a radical surgical plan that would have left Michelle dealing with serious medical issues for the rest of her life but spared her an abortion, and others in the operating room disapproved of an intensive surgery when the simpler and faster solution was to terminate. At the end of the day, Wilder realized that Michelle’s beliefs in not getting an abortion were as strong as her beliefs in the right to choose, and she had to let Michelle make her choice... even if she strongly recommended otherwise. 

With Bloom’s perspective, New Amsterdam told a story through the eyes of a person who used her right to choose safely, and the Supreme Court decision hit very close to home for her. With Brantley’s, viewers saw through the eyes of somebody who had fought for the right to choose decades ago, only to see it taken away now. With Wilder’s, we saw the other side of the right to choose that the doctors didn’t approve of, but had to respect. 

This was an emotionally rough episode in a season that has been pretty dark, and Max “How can I help?” Goodwin isn’t usually left in a state of such resignation that he truly can’t help. It was also a powerful episode that used three different storylines to tackle the concept of choice, and a standout of New Amsterdam.

New Amsterdam is just short of halfway through the fifth and final season, and the first six episodes haven’t been easy for Max. Losing Helen was a rough way to kick off the premiere, and the hits have kept on coming. Sure, his friends have supported him, and the relationship with Dr. Wilder keeps getting stronger, but he just hasn’t had many wins that didn’t come with some drawbacks. “Give Me A Sign” gave him a drawback-free win, which is good timing… because the medical drama is about the stack the odds against him again. 

Max’s jog with Wilder was rudely interrupted when she was nearly hit by a car in a dangerous intersection, and a teenager and his grandmother were actually struck. This started Max’s crusade to get a crosswalk painted, and winning the court battle (after negotiating a deal with a fun new character) was only the beginning of the fight. When there was no sign that they’d be able to cut through the red tape and get the crosswalk added to hopefully save lives anytime soon, Max just had to pay the lawyer her fee and hope for the best. 

But as it turned out, lawyer Callie Cruz embraces her own version of his “How can I help?” mantra and used her fee to buy a whole lot of paint, and recruited the services of some street painters to get the crosswalk done. Max pitched in, and even Wilder showed up to have a laugh with him over the fact that their good deed was probably illegal. (And I’m not sure where all of the New York City traffic went or how they hoped for the paint to dry without being ruined, but it was a win!)

The crosswalk felt cathartic after the end of another tough case involving a child, although thankfully the young boy whose parents had refused to let him learn sign language didn't have quite as dark of an ending in the episode as the child bride a few weeks ago. New Amsterdam often lets Max get a little bit of a win, or at least find a silver lining, but there were no strings attached in “Give Me A Sign” in a pretty great way. 

And it looks like there will be strings attached to just about everything with the episode that will air on November 11. Called “Maybe Tomorrow,” the episode description from NBC reveals that the hospital staff will face the new realities of the Supreme Court’s ruling on abortion rights. 

Brantley – who is usually more likely to bring a reality check to Max than to indulge him in going off the beaten path – will encourage him to find a solution for patients living outside of New York state. Wilder will have her hands full in advising a woman whose life is in danger due to her pregnancy. In case you missed it, check out the promo for Episode 7:

It looks like emotions will be running high for the doctors and the public, if the shots of the staff staring at the news in shock and Iggy (who has been having a rough season himself) pushing his way through a crowd of protesters are any indication. Brantley wants Max to help and will give him all the resources he needs, but that doesn’t mean he can do anything that will undo the Supreme Court ruling. Even Max has his limits. 

So, how will Max and the rest do what they can to help their patients with some new constraints? Find out when the “Maybe Tomorrow” episode of New Amsterdam airs on Tuesday, November 1 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, and revisit past episodes streaming with a Peacock subscription now.

Max has had a rough fifth season of New Amsterdam so far, but the good doctor had a little help from his friends in the aftermath of losing Helen and he’s back to giving his all to help others. A new clip from the October 25 episode of the medical drama – called “Give Me A Sign” – reveals that Max will have to make a deal with somebody outside of the hospital to make a difference this time, and he’ll team up with an interesting new character to do it. Check it out above!

Who could have guessed that we’d see the day of Max “How Can I Help?” Goodwin recruiting the help of an ambulance-chasing lawyer based off of a “Get Yo’ Crash Cash” business card? He came for a good cause, although he wouldn’t describe his mission as to “bring justice to the kid and the old broad who got mushed this morning.” 

Lawyer Callie Cruz (played by The Sopranos and The Blacklist vet Aida Turturro) thinks that he wants to sue a driver for causing injuries that require surgery, but his goals are much more in line with who fans have been watching for the past five seasons. Max doesn’t want to sue a driver for money; he wants to sue the city of New York to get a crosswalk added to a dangerous intersection. 

While the issue is pretty serious, the episode clip already makes it clear that Max and Callie are going to have a fun dynamic in “Give Me A Sign,” particularly with her immediately saying that Max not wanting money is “an obvious lie” but rolling with it anyway. She’s up for the challenge of suing the city, as she cuts her fee in half after Max starts negotiating. He didn’t even have to try very hard! 

That’s not to say that they won’t have to try hard to get that crosswalk painted, since suing New York City can’t be a very straightforward process. It’s curious that Max has to go to an unlikely ally to push this case forward, and I can’t help but wonder whether the hospital is actually volunteering the $5,000 fee for Callie if they win their case. 

If anything, Max going above and beyond is a sign that he’s more or less back to normal, after the heartbreak of losing Helen and then the health scare when he briefly thought that his cancer might be returning. Getting closer to Dr. Wilder has clearly helped him bounce back as well, even though what was supposed to be a huge triumph for them a few episodes ago took a dark turn. 

Since the fifth season is also the final season, now is the time to stay current on the goings-on at New York’s public hospital and the variety of ways that Max Goodwin is sure to always try to help. The “Give Me A Sign” episode of New Amsterdam airs on Tuesday, October 25 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. 

The promo also reveals that Reynolds will face some more complications with his father after coming to suspect that he has bipolar disorder, so be sure to tune in! As for whether or not Iggy needs an intervention… well, only the new episode will reveal how he’s coping after his wilderness misadventure. Warning: spoilers are ahead for Episode 5 of New Amsterdam Season 5, called “Grabby Hands.”

The fifth and final season of New Amsterdam kept on rolling with “Grabby Hands,” and there were plenty of people in need of some extra help this week. While there was enough of a time jump from the end of the previous episode that Dr. Wilder back back in the OR, Max was dealing with the problem of a nurse being arrested because of an incident that wasn’t really her fault while also dealing with accidentally cutting Luna, who had the “grabby hands” this week. But it was after watching Iggy’s storyline that I was left wondering: does he need an intervention from his coworkers?

Iggy took some young patients on a field trip to the forest in “Grabby Hands,” with the goal of exposing them to nature and getting their faces away from their cell phone screens for some time. The kids weren’t really admiring the scenery on the drive there, so the psychiatrist confiscated their phones. When they called him out on keeping his phone on him 24/7 (and all the push notifications for the dating app for “professional singles”) he decided that he would be fair and leave his phone behind for the hike as well. 

And what happened was what pretty much any other adult would have predicted: the group got lost in the woods, with no phones to call for help or use to consult a trail map. A storm blew in, and Iggy was more relying on the kids for wilderness skills than they were able to rely on him. They got out of their situation eventually, but only when Iggy found out that one of the kids kept an iPad on him after getting his phone confiscated. 

Iggy didn’t seem to really take away a lasting lesson from the disastrous field trip, although he did realize that just taking away their phones wasn’t the right solution. I also like to think that he learned that making sure kids have sunscreen, water, and hats for hikes won’t help all that much if their inexperienced guide doesn’t have any means of navigation or communication. (Well, Tyler Labine did open up about his character’s breaking point back in Season 4!)

It was an interesting side plot in the episode, and I for one always love stories that pair Iggy up with kids, but I spent most of his screentime thinking about the kids’ parents and hoping that they would find a new therapist after the events of “Grabby Hands.” Iggy was already throwing up some red flags even before he took the party to the woods, with his dating app notifications going off enough that the kids noticed, and still wearing a wedding ring. 

I like to think that some of the other doctors at New Amsterdam might have had a thing or two to say if they found out about what he did. In fact, Reynolds recently went on his own nature adventure with his dad, and that was enough of a disaster that I can imagine he might have an earful for Iggy on this instance. 

Of course, the staff at New Amsterdam had some much larger concerns in “Grabby Hands” (and Reynolds’ determination to try and find a lasting romance after all the drama with Lyn didn’t hold for very long), but I’m thinking that Iggy is going to need somebody to step in.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 4 of New Amsterdam Season 5, called “Heal Thyself.”

After New Amsterdam ended on an incredibly dark note last week, the medical drama initially didn’t seem to be lightening up much in “Heal Thyself.” Max was facing the possibility that his cancer had returned, Bloom’s doctor took her off the prescription that was controlling her anxiety, Iggy was confused about his erectile dysfunction, Reynolds was facing surgery for a medical problem he hadn’t even known about the day before, and Wilder was facing surgery that would leave her unable to use her hands for several weeks. The episode ended on an emotional moment between Max and Wilder, and based on the promo for the next episode, it seems that New Amsterdam is delivering a time jump.

After most of the main characters had some breakthroughs (including Max learning that his cancer hadn’t come back after all), Wilder still had to go through with her surgery, which meant that not only could she not do her job while she recovered, but she also couldn’t sign, write, or text. Max made the pretty grand gesture of promising to be her hands while she couldn’t use her own, and made a board to help her communicate. 

It was a sweet moment that ended in as much of a tender embrace as possible in a hospital bed with one person’s hands bound in bandages, even though I for one still have Sharpwin on my mind whenever New Amsterdam starts to play up the romance between them. I've loved Wilder since her debut, but it hasn’t been that long since Helen ended things for Max’s healing process to begin. Based on the promo for the next episode, however, fans will be getting a time jump. 

In the footage for the episode that will air on October 18 (called “Grabby Hands”), Dr. Wilder is briefly featured. Notably, the oncologist is seen signing at a very fast pace, with Ben interpreting for her. She’s dressed in scrubs, and all signs suggest that she’s all healed up and back at work in the operating room. While speaking to Max in this week’s “Heal Thyself,” she informed him that having the hand surgery meant she wouldn’t “be able to communicate for weeks.”

While that’s not enough information to say exactly how much time has passed between Episode 4 and Episode 5, it will be at least multiple weeks for Wilder to be back to signing as usual. Whether or not New Amsterdam actually comments on the passage of time remains to be seen; if mention is made of the weeks since “Heal Thyself,” it could help any faithful Sharpwin fans to come around to Wilder and Max. 

The only sticky issue for me with Max and Wilder has been that New Amsterdam – now in its shortened fifth and final season – doesn’t have the time to build up a new romance for Max on the same scale as what he had with Helen over four years. A little bit of extra time passing could be a good thing, whether or not anybody acknowledges her surgery next week. Take a look at the promo for yourself:

Spoilers ahead for the October 4 episode of New Amsterdam Season 5, called “Big Day.”

New Amsterdam is slowly but surely counting down the episodes until the very end with this fifth and final season, and the latest episode didn’t close on the kind of feel-good note that Max Goodwin strives for. In fact, the devastating twist about the wedding guests who were brought into the ED was dark enough that even though I’ve resigned myself to the medical drama losing Freema Agyeman’s Helen Sharpe, I was really missing Sharpwin by the end. 

Why “Big Day” Was So Devastating

The doctors were having a stressful time trying to treat all of the wedding guests who were brought into the hospital after a fire at the venue, but that was no surprise for the ED. Most of the injured guests seemed more or less okay and more or less normal. The two biggest problems were that the groom had an extremely rare blood type and would die without an infusion, and a little girl was catatonic after what she witnessed. 

While Max and Dr. Wilder found themselves heading to Bermuda to retrieve a donor who could come back to New York and donate blood in person (without getting that blood seized by customs), Iggy did what he could with young Lily, including telling the story of the flower girl at his wedding. 

Now, this being New Amsterdam – a.k.a. the medical drama with a knack for finding a silver lining even in some of the darkest stories – I was thinking that Max and Wilder would be able to save the groom in time for his wedding to a perfectly lovely and age-appropriate bride, and Lily would recover in time to carry flowers down whatever aisle they could manage at the hospital. 

But I was very wrong. Lily was not the flower girl, but the bride for the very adult groom. It was a child wedding, and the fire was actually a smoke bomb from her 15-year-old brother, who was trying to save her. The doctors were all appalled that the people who seemed like perfectly normal wedding guests simply caught in a crisis were actually people who supported a marriage between a grown man and little girl, but no arrests could be made. 

Lily’s mother got a legal marriage license in West Virginia, and no federal laws were being broken with the wedding. All of the doctors were on the verge of tears after getting the news that nobody would be punished, and the closest that the storyline had to a cathartic ending was Iggy visiting Martin and just asking to see the kids, and Max going home to Luna and suggesting that he sleep right by her bed that night.

Why It Made Me Miss Sharpwin

On the surface, this episode actually didn’t touch on Max’s heartbreak after losing Helen (with only her letter narrated by Freema Agyeman in a voice cameo to go on). to give him closure. In fact, it continued building the bond between Max and Wilder. Unlike the Season 5 premiere, none of the devastation had anything to do with the Sharpwin love story ending. But I found myself remembering that some of the happiest parts of last season came from when they were on solid ground together, and it felt like New Amsterdam really needed some solid ground at the end of “Big Day.”

Max really could have used some companionship at home to go along with Luna, who could be a comfort to her father but not understand what had happened. His conversation with Wilder seemed to give them both some comfort, and she has clearly been somebody for him to lean on through his heartache. 

It was just hard not to miss the happy Max who was planning his future with Helen when the big twist of the episode was such a downer. (Interestingly, “Big Day” was directed by Lost alum Nestor Carbonell, who directed one of the most devastating episodes of Season 4 as well.) Maybe I just missed the lightness of the peak Sharpwin era rather than the relationship itself, but hopefully there will be a little bit more joy next week.

New Amsterdam returned to NBC with a Season 5 premiere that showed viewers that the medical drama could still be joyful and celebratory despite the absence of Freema Agyeman as Dr. Helen Sharpe, effectively bringing an end to the Sharpwin relationship. The episode did find a way to give Max (and fans) some degree of closure via a letter that she wrote to her former fiancé, with Agyeman making a voice cameo to narrate and make it feel truly real. Speaking with CinemaBlend, executive producer Peter Horton explained how the actress reacted to Helen's role and lending her voice for the letter. 

In the letter, Helen made it clear how much her “dearest Max” and “sweet Luna” meant to her and that she sees her actions in the Season 4 finale (available streaming on Peacock) as “unforgivable.” But she also made the point that her problems that kept her in London and from marrying him were real, and she couldn’t just get rid of them. It took Max the better part of the episode to realize that trying to fix her problems for her didn’t help, but he might not have been able to make it that far without her letter, narrated by Freema Agyeman. 

While executive producer David Schulner opened up about dropping clues throughout Season 4 that everything wasn’t alright with Helen since they knew that Freema Agyeman was leaving, she was still happy to help with the Season 5 premiere. EP Peter Horton explained the logistics of getting her voice work for the letter, and how she responded to the request: 

The actress was back in England, but the show didn’t need her on set back on the American side of the pond for her narration of the letter. According to Horton, she was “gracious” and “enthusiastic” when they reached out, and the result was fans getting some answers from Helen in her own voice. Even if the split isn’t what Sharpwin fans were hoping for, Helen’s love for Max came through in Agyeman’s performance. 

Now, Max can truly begin what Ryan Eggold described as his healing process for Season 5, and the end of the Season 5 premiere suggested that maybe growing closer to Dr. Wilder could be part of that. Of course, Max’s entire group of friends came together to support him in his time of need. Peter Horton continued, explaining what was special about the cast and Freema Agyeman’s contribution: 

Not all shows are able to hold on to so many of its core cast members from the first season to the last, and the executive producer had nothing but praise for them as the fifth season returns and continues. Of course, plenty of fans would prefer that the fifth season wasn’t the last (and had a longer run than just 13 episodes), but the premiere was proof that Max’s journey doesn’t have to end on a mournful note just because he lost Helen.

New Amsterdam returned to NBC for its fifth and final season that had to begin by addressing the end of Season 4. Sharpwin fans were dealt a serious blow when Helen called off their wedding from across the pond, and actress Freema Agyeman’s announcement over the summer meant that there wasn’t going to be a happy resolution in the fall. Now, star Ryan Eggold and executive producer David Schulner opened up about the Bollywood final scene of “TBD” and the “catharsis” that came with it.

The Season 5 premiere had some serious highs and lows, with the lows largely centering on Max’s efforts to move on from losing Helen… and Luna wondering where her “mum” is didn’t help. Freema Agyeman made a voice cameo in a letter that attempted to give Max some closure (and the bosses shared that they dropped clues in Season 4 to foreshadow the heartbreaking twist), and he was able to channel his energy into helping a young boy achieve his dying wish of visiting a Bollywood movie set. 

Unfortunately, all the combined energy in the world (with Max, Wilder, Reynolds, and even Brantley joining in) couldn’t make the boy well enough to travel to India, so they decided to throw him a Bollywood sequence of his own right there in the hospital. Not only did it give the boy something to celebrate, but the doctors jumped in to participate and join in the fun as well. 

Max had a lingering look at Dr. Wilder in the final moments after she tried to get him to dance, which suggests that maybe she could help him with what Ryan Eggold described as Max’s “healing.” The Bollywood number was a cathartic way to end the premiere and set up that the final season won’t be thirteen episodes of mourning the Sharpwin relationship. David Schulner shared that this particular storyline was originally planned for years ago, saying:

Apparently, the beginning of the fifth and final season was finally when the time was right for New Amsterdam to go full Bollywood! Even though finding joy was more of a theme for the fourth season, the dance number was intended to be a sign that celebration and fun can still happen despite the huge shakeup. Ryan Eggold, who directed “TBD” as well as starred, shared his own perspective on the ending:

Eggold made sure to credit the choreographer who brought that “life” to the Season 5 premiere, when Max seemed like he needed a jolt of happiness to his system. Although he didn’t join in the dancing himself, it was clear that seeing all the joy was doing him a lot of good after how all of his friends were there for him in the beginning of the episode. The actor/director elaborated on what made this a “touching” story, saying:

“Catharsis” was actually the perfect word for how New Amsterdam wrapped its first episode of Season 5, as it followed Max’s realization that he made a mistake in trying to fix everything for Helen. When I asked if learning not to try to fix things for everybody else is a lesson that Max “How Can I Help?" Goodwin can learn, Eggold responded:

The only bad news is that Max only has twelve episodes left to learn whatever lessons are necessary, as Season 5 only received an order for 13 episodes. Still, the Season 5 premiere set up what could be a joyous and celebratory season, which bodes well for finishing the stories of these characters.

New Amsterdam is returning for its fifth and final season of Max “How Can I Help?” Goodwin doing everything he can to help those who come to his hospital in need, but the show isn’t coming back with everybody who was still around when Season 4 ended. Freema Agyeman left the show over the summer hiatus, which means the end of Sharpwin on fans’ screens on a weekly basis. Viewers will have to tune in to the premiere on September 20 to see how the medical drama explains the absence of Dr. Helen Sharpe, but one thing is already certain: Max has a healing journey in front of him, and Ryan Eggold opened up about it.

After executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton revealed to CinemaBlend that Freema Agyeman originally might have left even earlier and they dropped clues during Season 4, they shared that the fourth episode of the season is called “Heal Thyself,” and that the idea of “heal thyself” is “a good theme” for Season 5. Ryan Eggold answered whether Max needed to focus on healing himself in light of how Season 4 ended, saying:

The future was looking very bright for Max during part of Season 4, when he and Helen moved to London and proceeded to get engaged. His idea of planning their wedding for her when she landed in New York in the finale was either extremely romantic or overwhelming, depending on how you looked at it. The heartbreak came when she called him and he realized that she didn’t get on the plane at all. It’s not clear yet how exactly New Amsterdam will explain her absence, but Max has some healing to do. 

Luckily, even though he won’t have Helen in his life the way he did for the better part of a year, Max is back in New York with plenty of friends rather than more isolated in London. Of course, Season 4 ended on a pretty stressful note for more characters than just Max, as Bloom realized that money is always going to be a messy issue between her and Leyla and Iggy doubled down on what he said about Martin. Reynolds reconnecting with his father wasn’t quite as intense as what the others were going through, but he deserved a break from emotionally intense stories after everything he went through with Lyn and her pregnancy!

So, will the people around him be an asset to Max as he tries to heal from losing Helen? Ryan Eggold shared:

It’ll be sad to see Max without Helen after how happy Sharpwin were for a time in Season 4, but a support group montage of the remaining characters together may be just what viewers need as much as Max himself. Losing Helen doesn’t mean that the whole family of friends needs to fall apart, and it sounds like the Season 5 premiere will be a reminder of that as Max begins his healing process.

New Amsterdam will soon return to NBC for its fifth and final season, but the lineup is going to look very different due to the absence of Helen Sharpe. Actress Freema Agyeman has left the series following the heartbreaking end of Season 4, which presumably means the end of Max and Helen’s relationship. Executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton spoke with CinemaBlend about clues that fans may have missed about Helen’s decision, as well as the heartache on the way when it comes to Sharpwin. 

Freema Agyeman has been a key part of New Amsterdam (and Max’s life) going back to the beginning of the series, and the Season 4 finale that featured Helen breaking off their wedding didn’t actually establish that she wouldn’t be coming back at all. (You can revisit the finale streaming with a Peacock subscription.) When I spoke with the executive producers ahead of the Season 5 premiere, they addressed how early they found out that Agyeman wouldn’t be back so that they could plan ahead for Season 5. David Schulner said:

Fans actually lucked out in Freema Agyeman staying on for Season 4, which provided a season of showing Max and Helen finally in a relationship together after years of will they/won’t they tension and a big kiss in the Season 3 finale. Plus, the New Amsterdam team dropped some clues into Season 4 to guarantee that Helen’s absence in Season 5 could make sense. 

Considering that there were obvious clues along the way that Helen wasn’t as caught up in the idea of getting married ASAP as Max was, it makes sense that there were hints that fans might have missed that Helen wouldn’t return to New Amsterdam. She had some struggles with her mother and her life back in London, and it’s probably safe to say that their separation after Max returned to New York didn’t help matters, although only time (and the upcoming Season 5 finale) will tell for sure. 

While there were hints along the way, however, there was the hope that Freema Agyeman would return for Season 5, as EP Peter Horton said:

Of course, the news that Season 5 would be the last came back in March, which was several months after the fourth season premiered. They didn’t know early on that the series finale was on the way in the next TV season, so it should be interesting to see how New Amsterdam moves Max forward with only 13 episodes left. The good news is that most of the cast will be back! 

So, was there a goal of bringing Sharpwin together as a reward for fans who had been rooting for them for so long, before having to say goodbye to Helen? David Schulner shared:

It wouldn’t be a TV show if everything went perfectly for a whole season! When I noted that it was going well enough for a while there before the cracks started to show and Helen made that fateful phone call to Max in the finale, Schulner responded: 

It’s not clear just yet if fans should give up hope of ever seeing or hearing from Helen again before the end of the fifth and final season, but the upcoming Season 5 premiere should yield some answers. Tune in to NBC for the return of New Amsterdam on Tuesday, September 20 at 10 p.m. ET.

New Amsterdam is returning for its fifth and final season without Dr. Helen Sharpe, after Freema Agyeman announced her departure back in July. Now, reports suggest that fans should possibly prepare to say goodbye to another doctor before the new episodes even begin to air. Have we already seen the last of Genevieve Angelson as Dr. Mia Castries?

Dr. Castries didn’t make the best first impression as a doctor, both because the others initially suspected that she was a spy for Dr. Fuentes (when Reynolds was ultimately the one who betrayed them) and because she practiced holistic medicine. They did come around to her, however, and she seemed like she had the potential to stay on board even after Michelle Forbes’ character left. TVLine now reports that there are no plans for Genevieve Angelson to reprise her recurring role in New Amsterdam Season 5. 

The New Amsterdam producers haven’t commented on whether or not she’ll be back, and Genevieve Angelson herself hasn’t given any indication one way or the other on social media, so it’s not absolutely sure that she won’t be back. Still, it’s looking like Helen Sharpe won’t be the only character who disappears between the end of Season 4 and beginning of Season 5. 

The apparent likelihood of Mia Castries being gone at the beginning of the final season makes me wonder all over again about a possible time jump. New Amsterdam usually skips ahead early in the season, depending on whether or not the premiere needs to wrap up a finale cliffhanger like with the fateful ambulance crash that cost Luna her mother. 

It was the news of Freema Agyeman’s departure that really started me off on suspecting a time jump that could be bigger than usual. The actress’ statement when she announced that she wouldn’t be back didn’t indicate that she would be making cameo or guest appearances, and I’m not sure that I can see New Amsterdam spending many of its few remaining episodes with Max mourning the abrupt end to his relationship with Helen. 

The fifth and final season will run for only 13 episodes, so there’s just not time for the whole heartbreak process that fans would expect after Max lost the woman who had been so close and so special to him for so long. It wasn’t that long ago that they were talking about expanding their little family unit, and Max was quite literally ready to be married when he got the news that Helen was still in London. A time jump could move Max forward without the grieving process for their relationship, and explain why Dr. Castries is suddenly absent. 

Of course, I wouldn’t blame Dr. Castries if she decided to leave the hospital. The drama that happens at New Amsterdam is fun as a viewer, but a simple karaoke night with her coworkers turned into an icy near-death experience, not to mention all of the tension within the staff with Veronica Fuentes in charge. She made some headway with her coworkers by the end of the fourth season (which you can revisit streaming with a Peacock subscription), but could anybody really judge her if she decided to leave and find work at a less intense hospital? 

Unfortunately, fans still have weeks to wait before finding out if Season 4 really was the end of Genevieve Angelson’s time on New Amsterdam. The medical drama returns for its shortened fifth and final season on Tuesday, September 20 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. New Amsterdam is still a couple of months away from returning with new episodes after the game-changing Season 4 finale back in May, but one star has revealed a huge change coming to the fifth and final season. Freema Agyeman, who has played Dr. Helen Sharpe from the very beginning, announced that she will not be back for Season 5. She dropped the news with a touching message, and a suggestion for fans about how to continue the Helen (and Sharpwin) story.

Freema Agyeman’s Helen had a rough ride throughout the fourth season despite finally starting a romance with Max and returning to London. After some difficulties with her mother, a near-death experience and health crisis upon returning to New York for a visit in a karaoke night gone wrong, and Max planning a wedding for them without her input, it’s understandable that the character needed a break by the end of the finale. 

Still, it’ll be sad to lose the character ahead of the premiere, so it’s nice to see that the actress has a message for the “Dam Fam.” On Instagram, she wrote:

Although fans might not be feeling too upbeat about losing Helen (especially after some cast comments during Season 4) from the final batch of episodes, the actress had nothing but good things to say about her time at New Amsterdam, her experiences playing her character, and the support of the fans. Viewers have been invested in her from the beginning, both for her work as a doctor and her dynamic with Max. The hospital had to deal with her absence after she returned to London in Season 4, but this will be the first time that she’ll be missing as a series regular. Agyeman continued:

Freema Agyeman clearly isn’t leaving with any bitterness about the series, as she considers herself a fan, and it sounds like she’ll be joining viewers in tuning in when the fifth season debuts. It doesn’t sound like she’s planning on appearing at all, based on this post and her advice to fanfic writers to pic up the story and tell what happens next. Still, a lot can happen between now and the end of the 13-episode final season. 

It should be interesting to see how the show handles Helen’s sudden absence. She told Max that she couldn’t come to New York to marry him, and was still in London by the end of the Season 4 finale, so her exit was set up in a way that it won’t be too jarring for the show to return without her. A lot may depend on if New Amsterdam goes for a time jump over hiatus, to give Max some time after Helen missed what he’d intended to be their wedding. Friends is one of the most beloved and successful sitcoms of all time, even 18 years since its final episode aired on NBC. However, there’s one big issue that will always haunt the show as its 236 episodes continue to draw in fans on streaming and in syndication: its lack of diversity. New Amsterdam vet Daniel Dae Kim, who has become an advocate for Asian American and Pacific Islander rights, shared some honest comments about the sitcom’s lack of representation, even as he said he totally loved the hit comedy.

Daniel Dae Kim is known for playing Jin-Soo Kwon on Lost, Chin Ho Kelly on Hawaii Five-0 and for appearing in a ton of other major shows. He also started the production company 3AD, which develops content that specifically features underrepresented characters and stories, including The Good Doctor. The actor told Esquire that he and his wife have gotten into the habit of pointing out Asian faces to their children when they’re watching TV or a movie, which not only allows them to take note of representation, but also makes it obvious when such diversity is lacking, he said:

The main cast of Friends — Jennifer Aniston (Rachel), David Schwimmer (Ross), Matt LeBlanc (Joey), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Matthew Perry (Chandler) and Courteney Cox (Monica) — are all white, but the lack of representation didn’t stop there. Except for a couple of notable exceptions, most of the recurring cast, guest stars, and random people they encountered, including their love interests and fellow Central Perk patrons, were pretty lacking by way of people of color — a ridiculous thought when considering what New York City's population actually comprises.

Daniel Dae Kim consistently speaking out on the issue and shining a light on such missteps is one way to help change the landscape of what’s on our screens. He and Grace Park famously left Hawaii Five-0 due to pay discrepancies with their white co-stars. CBS said at the time that Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan were the leads of the series, and Kim and Park were supporting characters, which didn't sit right when the latter pair. More conversations are being had about minority cast members being paid less than their white co-stars in the TV industry. Not that Friends, with one of the highest-paid casts in TV history, had such discrepancies to worry about.

Sherri Shepherd had a memorable guest appearance on the sitcom as Joey's museum colleague Rhonda, and she  has addressed Friends’ diversity problem, saying it was hard to see a New York depicted with no other characters who looked like her. Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman also spoke about the issue on the CNN special History of the Sitcom, admitting that representation on the series was lacking. According to her, the issue is a product of the time and her own ignorance, saying back then there were “black shows and there were white shows. There weren’t a lot of shows that were interracial.”

David Schwimmer, however, has said he was aware of the problem and made a conscious push to have his character date women of color. Ross dated Julie (Lauren Tom) early in the series, then had a relationship with Charlie (Aisha Tyler) later on, with he and Joey fighting over Kristen Lang (Gabrielle Union) in one particularly amusing storyline. Simply put, however, it’s not enough, and the under-representation is a fair criticism that Friends will always carry. So if Kim wants to bring an Asian-geared iteration of the sitcom to TV anytime soon, we'll take it.

Spoiler warning for the Season 4 finale of New Amsterdam, called “I’ll Be Your Shelter.”

A hurricane came to New Amsterdam in the Season 4 finale, and while this wasn’t the first natural disaster to hit the hospital, the effects could quite literally last until the very end of the series. The medical drama will come to an end after a 13-episode fifth and final season, so the changes made in the Season 4 finale may be a very big deal in the long run. After all, the long run isn’t all that much longer! Plus, comments from actor Tyler Labine indicate that fans should pay close attention to where everybody ended up at the end of “I’ll Be Your Shelter.”

The hurricane blew over and left some serious destruction in its wake – both physical and emotional, and it’s the emotional destruction that might leave fans dying to know what happens next throughout hiatus. Although the episode started out with Max and Helen finalizing their plans to get married in a garden in New York once her flight arrives, it ended with Max learning that not only was Helen not on the flight that landed from London, but she sobbingly informed him over the phone that she’s “sorry” and she “can’t.” The wedding is off – at least, for now. It’s not clear just yet what kept her in London, and whether there’s more to it than cold feet and self-doubt. 

And that’s just the Sharpwin of the finale! Bloom realized that the money is always going to be an insurmountably messy issue between her and Leyla, and decided that she would let Leyla have the money and the apartment until her visa is figured out. Iggy doubled down on his stance that Martin is the problem in their marriage, and was told that he needs to move out if that’s the case. (Bloom and Iggy roommates in Season 5?) Reynolds may have been the main character who ended the episode in a better place than he started, after forming a tentative bond with his father. Sure, his father doesn’t know who Reynolds is, but it’s a good step! 

Wilder didn’t actually have much to do other than help Iggy figure out the mystery of why people couldn’t breathe in the hallway, but there’s still big news for her. Actress Sandra Mae Frank confirmed on Twitter that Wilder has been bumped up to series regular status for the fifth and final season. So, what do all of these developments mean, and why should fans expect their effects to last beyond the Season 5 premiere? Well, when Tyler Labine – who had quite a wild ride in the fourth season as Iggy – spoke with CinemaBlend ahead of the finale, he shared one benefit of knowing that the fifth and final season was already guaranteed:

Knowing how much time the show has left raised the stakes for creating “the best season,” and the Season 4 finale script was able to set some things up for what happens in the final batch of episodes. Hopefully that means a Sharpwin happily-ever-after after poor Helen was sobbing her heart out to Max at the end of “I’ll Be Your Shelter!” Tyler Labine went on to establish that there are plans for payoff of what the end of the current season set up:

Season 4 certainly has been tough, thanks almost entirely to the reign of Veronica Fuentes, who was finally toppled after some complex confrontations with Max. The struggles with Veronica stemmed out of Max’s decision to find his joy by moving to London to start a new life with Helen, and he was only one character determined to chase down some happiness after the difficulties of the third season with COVID. Tyler Labine spoke about the journey for characters to find joy with CinemaBlend back in September; now, he weighed in on whether they’re better or worse off after all the challenges:

Well, your journey to find joy can’t be joyful itself, and there’s no reason to assume that those journeys are over just because Season 4 is. There are still 13 episodes to go, and a lot can happen over 13 episodes on network television. Happy endings are still possible for all of the major characters, and wedding bells may still ring for Sharpwin. As for whether Iggy and Martin’s marriage will work out… well, only time will tell. Labine continued:

The good news of a guaranteed Season 5 is somewhat tempered by the fact that fans are still months away from finding out what happens next, after the promos that aired on NBC after the finale only confirmed that New Amsterdam will be back in the fall. The fourth season of New Amsterdam delivered kinds of challenges that the doctors couldn’t have seen coming, ranging from Veronica Fuentes definitely not running the hospital like Max “How Can I Help? Goodwin to key characters being poisoned during karaoke night. Now, the Season 4 finale is set to feature a whole different kind of crisis, on top of the various revelations and decisions from the penultimate episode. Tyler Labine, who plays Iggy, opened up to CinemaBlend about his character’s “breaking point” ahead of the finale, as well as who will rise to the occasion in the face of a natural disaster. 

Iggy’s personal life has been a disaster in some ways throughout Season 4, ever since he hired Trevor and got a little too close for comfort with the flirty nurse. He has had to deal with some consequences ever since Martin found out, but came to a conclusion in the penultimate episode that he has been “wounding” himself so that Martin could save him throughout their relationship. It was a major breakthrough for the last episode before the May 24 finale, and when I spoke with Tyler Labine on May 23, he weighed in on how his character assigns blame after turning things around on Martin: 

According to the actor, Iggy’s harsh words that sounded “abrupt and hasty” weren’t premeditated to hurt Martin, and they didn’t come out of nowhere, even though fans haven’t seen all the buildup over the years. There have certainly been issues and dramatic twists for the two characters, and those have officially led somewhere. Labine continued:

New Amsterdam hasn’t revealed every key moment in Iggy and Martin’s relationship to fans, taking place before or during the span of the show. Even if Iggy receiving a sweater and then coming to a world-shaking realization about his marriage may have seemed like a very quick leap in the penultimate episode of Season 4, Labine’s take is that there’s a logical reason. He elaborated:

Based on the actor’s words, fans shouldn't interpret Iggy’s comments about the sweater to mean that the end is 100% nigh for his marriage to Martin. That’s not to say that everything will end happily ever after for them in Season 4 or that their marriage will survive in the long run, but there’s more to the story than we’ve seen so far. As Labine noted when we spoke on the day before the finale, there’s still time for them. 

And it’s safe to say that the finale isn’t going to spend the whole hour on Iggy and Martin’s issues, although they’ll certainly have a part to play. The promo reveals that a hurricane is hitting the hospital, complete with windows shattering from the wind, hallways collapsing, and the power going out. I asked Tyler Labine how the characters rise to the occasion – or don’t rise to the occasion – with the hurricane crisis, and he previewed:

Iggy is obviously very capable in his field of psychiatry, but doesn’t exactly handle the most action-packed crises compared to doctors like Bloom and Reynolds (both of whom have had their own issues in Season 4). He’ll step up when there’s a “call to arms” in the finale, although he may not have fully comprehended just what he was stepping up for. In fact, based on a clip for the finale, Iggy got the job because nobody else wanted to take it. Check it out:

The Season 4 finale of New Amsterdam airs on Tuesday, May 24 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. It’s clearly going to be a stormy episode that may or may not end well for Iggy and Martin’s marriage, but the skies could be looking clear for Max and Helen reuniting in New York… assuming that her flight makes it across the Atlantic in spite of the storm and she's not stuck in London. All signs point toward a must-see hour of TV, so be sure to tune in! Spoilers ahead for Episode 21 of New Amsterdam Season 4, called “Castles Made of Sand.”

New Amsterdam is officially just one full episode away from entering the hiatus before the fifth and final season, and “Castles Made of Sand” set up what would be an eventful season finale even without the natural disaster that is on the way. In the final moments of the episode, Max made a gesture that was bold even by his “How can I help?” standards, and I’m not sure that it won’t backfire in the finale on May 24. 

Max and Helen were once again separated by an ocean in “Castles Made of Sand,” but he was planning on returning to London ASAP while she was happily checking out a castle as a potential wedding venue. Things went sideways – as they so often do on New Amsterdam – when Max discovered that the hospital was falling apart without a medical director, and Helen’s mum managed to talk her out of not only the wedding at a castle, but possibly getting married at all. 

Helen seemed poised to break that news to him over the phone from London while he was in New York, but didn’t get too far before Max declared that he didn’t want to get married in a castle either. She seemed to think that he was ready to call off the wedding altogether, but he continued:

Now, on the one hand, a lot of that speech made for a pretty great grand gesture to sweep anybody off their feet and across the ocean to get married, but Helen seemed about ready to call the wedding off altogether before he made the speech. He also outright said that she would come to New York to get married instead of asking what she wanted, or listening to what she was starting to say. Sure, Helen gave him “Yes!” after “Yes!” after he made this new proposal, but I’m a little uneasy about how it happened. 

Plus, the promo for the Season 4 finale makes it very clear that things are going to quite literally get stormy for the doctors of New Amsterdam. Called “I’ll Be Your Shelter,” the episode’s description reveals that Bloom and her emergency team have to scramble to prepare for the monster hurricane heading for New York while Max and Helen plan their wedding. 

The promo includes a shot of Max all suited up and looking ready to tie the knot, but almost all of the rest of the footage points toward a disaster of pretty epic proportions hitting the hospital, and I’m not convinced that the sunny shot of happy Max isn’t a dream sequence. Take a look at what’s on the way:

See whether or not Max and Helen get a happy ending this time around with the Season 4 finale of New Amsterdam on Tuesday, May 24 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. After everything the characters went through in the fourth season with Veronica Fuentes before she was finally ousted (not to mention all of the poisonings and Helen’s stroke), I have my hopes for an uplifting ending, but only time will tell whether or not a cliffhanger is on the way.

New Amsterdam picked up the pace and raised the stakes higher than ever in the second half of Season 4, including with an episode helmed by Korean-American director Jean Lee. She directed the episode that featured Max and Fuentes’ final big confrontation before Michelle Forbes’ character’s downfall, while Helen went through an impactful arc with her mother in London after her stroke. Lee’s episode, called “Truth Be Told,” also aired during May, which is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and she opened up to CinemaBlend about the experience and the timing. 

Jean Lee came to New Amsterdam as part of NBCU’s Female Forward program, which works to create gender parity in scripted TV directing. That program promotes opportunities for female directors who have been underrepresented in their profession in television, and Lee’s episode of New Amsterdam proved just what is possible when directors are given the chance to work on a major network show. The Korean-American director spoke with CinemaBlend, and shared her thoughts on “Truth Be Told” airing during AAPI Heritage Month:

While progress has been made about promoting diversity for Asian and Latino directors in the entertainment industry, there is still a long way to go, but Jean Lee’s directing stint and episode broadcast date during May were “meaningful” to her and others on the set of New Amsterdam. The May broadcast date also came as a surprise to Lee, as she had no idea when she directed that her episode would air during AAPI Heritage Month. She explained:

New Amsterdam’s broadcast schedule was certainly unusual during the fourth season, first due to the 2022 Olympics that bumped a lot of NBC programming from the usual primetime slots, and then due to Renée Zellweger’s The Thing About Pam taking over Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. for several weeks. The showrunners opened up about how the schedule meant a big change for what turned out the be a two-parter packed with cliffhangers about the fates of many key characters. 

The pace picked up quickly following the spring premiere, which meant that Jean Lee’s episode had a lot to cover that has turned out to be important for the final arc of Season 4. She shared how she prepared to enter a show already four seasons in with so many established characters and storylines: 

Jean Lee can now officially count herself as a director with experience in scripted TV, with an episode under her belt that delivered some turning points for the whole season. She also shared some photos from her time working on New Amsterdam to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the work that went into her episode:

Every time a new show arrives on TV or any one of the various streaming services like Hulu and HBO Max, something has to get cut to make room for the new growth. It has happened before and will continue to happen as long as the medium is alive or until the lights finally go out. And 2022 is no different, as some of the biggest shows of the past decade (or longer) like Better Call Saul, Peaky Blinders, and The Walking Dead Season 11 will all air their final episodes at some point this year.

Below is a rather comprehensive list of all the TV shows that are ending or cancelled in 2022. There’s a lot to go over here, so let’s get started before another show is giving the axe or added to the list of titles leaving Netflix.

4400

The CW’s reboot of 4400, which followed a group of people who suddenly return after going missing with no memory of what happened, was one of the numerous series cancelled in May 2022. The show only lasted one season after premiering in October 2021.

A Discovery Of Witches

In December 2021, Digital Spy reported that the third and final season of the popular romantic drama A Discovery of Witches starring Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer would start up January 7, 2022. The series, which debuted in the UK in 2018 can be watched in its entirety on the AMC+ streaming platform.

Animal Kingdom

In April 2022, TNT finally announced the release date of the sixth and final season of the drama series Animal Kingdom, which is set to kick off Sunday, June 19, bringing an end to the epic saga of the Cody crime family.

Archive 81

Fans of the supernatural horror series Archive 81 were in for a shocker when Netflix announced the show, which was based on the podcast of the same name, would not be returning for a second season.

Arthur

The PBS Kids series Arthur, which is based on the collection of children’s books of the same name, has been releasing new episodes on a fairly consistent basis since September 1996. That run ends in 2022 when the show’s 25th and final season debuts, per the New York Times. However, PBS is leaving the door open for more Arthur content in the future.

After Life

The Ricky Gervais black comedy series After Life has called Netflix home its entire run dating back to March 2019, but that comes to an end when the third and final set of episodes debuted on the streaming service on January 14, 2022. The show’s final season was confirmed by the Netflix UK & Ireland Twitter account in December 2021.

Atlanta

Although it’s not one of the shows that got the ax, Donald Glover’s beloved FX series, Atlanta, will be ending its run following the release of the fourth and final season, which is slated to premiere at some point in fall 2022.

B Positive 

The Thomas Middleditch- and Annaleigh Ashford-starring CBS sitcom, B Positive, never really took off with audiences throughout its two-season run, which resulted in the network pulling the plug after the Season 2 finale in May 2015.

Batwoman

Gotham lost one of its protectors in April 2022 when The CW announced that Batwoman would not be returning for a fourth season, making the Season 3 finale also the final episode.

Better Call Saul

Since 2015, Vince Gilligan’s Better Call Saul has been one of the best shows, not just on AMC but TV in general. But everything must come to an end at some point, and that time has come for the the Bob Odenkirk-led dark comedy series. Better Call Saul Season 6 debuted April 18, 2022.

Better Things

The FX comedy series Better Things will come to an end when the show’s fifth and final season premiered on February 28, 2022. The series, which followed single mother and working actress Sam Fox (Pamela Adlon, who also co-created the show alongside Louis C.K.) first debuted back in September 2016, and was called a “frank and funny look at womanhood” in the CinemaBlend review.

The Big Leap

The Fox musical comedy-drama, The Big Leap, which followed a group of people who put it all on the line in a reality dance competition, won’t be returning for more episodes after Fox cancelled the series following one season, in March 2022.

Black-ish

Kenya Barris’ successful and influential comedy series black-ish kicked off its eighth and final season on ABC on January 4, 2022, starting the final chapter in the story of sitcom that has spawned multiple spinoffs and received numerous awards over the years including a Golden Globe, a Primetime Emmy, and more than two dozen NAACP Image Awards.

Black Market With Michael K. Williams

The Vice TV docuseries Black Market with Michael K. Williams will come to an end after its second and final season premiered January 10, 2022 on the network, per Variety. The series, which originally premiered back in 2016, was forced to come to an end following the shocking and untimely death of host Michael K. Williams in September 2021.

Bull

The popular CBS legal drama series, Bull, which centered on Michael Weatherly’s tenacious psychologist and jury expert, is not returning for a seventh season, though it got a chance to wrap things up with a two-part series finale in May 2022.

Charmed

After four seasons, The CW cancelled the Charmed reboot series in May 2022, alongside several other of the network’s notable shows.

Claws

The final episode of the TNT dramedy series Claws will air its final episode when Season 4 concluded February 6, 2022, a little less than five years after it debuted on the cable network. The fourth and final season of the hit series was announced back in October 2019, per Deadline, and premiered in December 2021.

Cooking With Paris

Just a few months after it made its Netflix debut in August 2021, Cooking with Paris was cancelled by the streaming service. The Paris Hilton-led cooking program, which featured a number of guest stars and hilarious culinary situations, was not renewed for a second season, per Deadline.

Dead To Me

After three seasons, the Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate-led dark comedy Dead to Me came to an end on Netflix. The finale, which offered closure, aired in November 2022.

The Dr. Oz Show

The Dr. Oz Show, the daytime talk series hosted by Dr. Mehmet Oz ended after 13 seasons and nearly 1,700 episodes on January 14, 2022. The talk show ended its run after Oz announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania, per Variety.

Dynasty

The 2017 revival of Dynasty was another series that was cancelled by The CW in May 2022, bringing an end to the show’s five-season run that was just four episodes away from hitting the 100-episode mark.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show

The Ellen DeGeneres Show will complete its historic daytime run when the syndicated talk show completes its 19th and final season at some point in 2022. The announcement to end things came from DeGeneres herself in 2021, when she said she needed something new to challenge her.

Endeavour

After nearly a decade on the airwaves, the British detective series Endeavour will finally come to an end following the conclusion of its ninth and final season, according to TV Line.  

The Endgame

The Morena Baccarin and Ryan Michelle Bathé-led The Endgame joined the list of cancelled NBC shows in May 2022, according to Variety, bringing an end to the drama series after just one season on the network.

The Expanse

After six seasons (and two different homes), the popular sci-fi series The Expanse aired its final episode on January 14, 2022, on Amazon a little less than six years to the date of its debut on SyFy. 

The Good Fight

The Paramount+ (and CBS All Access before that) legal drama The Good Fight will come to an end following the conclusion of its sixth season, which premiered in September 2022.

Good Sam

In May 2022, CBS pulled the plug on the freshman medical drama series, Good Sam, that saw Jason Isaacs and Sophia Bush play a father-daughter doctor duo. According to Deadline, the series was the lowest-rated scripted program on CBS in the 2021-2022 season.

Grace and Frankie

Grace and Frankie, the long-running Netflix comedy series starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as two women who become friends when their husbands announce they are in love with one another, came to an end with its seventh season. The first crop of episodes premiered in August 2021 with the second following on April 29, 2022.

His Dark Materials

The fantasy drama series His Dark Materials (BBC One in The U.K.; HBO in The U.S.) will be back for a third and final season in December 2022

How We Roll

Not even two months after Pete Holmes’ bowling-centric CBS comedy series, How We Roll, made its debut, the network decided to give the show the ax in May 2022, according to Deadline.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

The Prime Video series I Know What You Did Last Summer, the remake series of the 1997 teen slasher of the same name, won’t receive a second season after Amazon decided to give the series the axe in January 2022, according to Deadline.

In The Dark

The fourth and final season of The CW’s police procedural series, In the Dark, will premiere on the popular network on June 6, 2022, per Deadline.

Kenan

Kenan Thompson may be the longest-running Saturday Night Live cast member, but his return to the world of sitcoms will be short-lived, as NBC cancelled his Kenan series following two seasons, in May 2022, according to Variety.

Kevin Can F**K Himself

The AMC dark comedy series Kevin Can F**K Himself starring Annie Murphy concluded its brief, two-season run in 2022.

Killing Eve

Killing Eve Season 4 premiered February 27, 2022 on BBC America, started the final set of episodes following the complicated lives of intelligence agent Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) and skilled assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer). The eight-episode final season was announced in 2021, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Legacies

When the Legacies Season 4 finale aired on June 16, 2022, it was also the final episode for The CW’s fantasy drama series, which was among the numerous shows cancelled by the network in May 2022.

Legends Of Tomorrow

The Arrowverse got a little smaller in April 2022, when it was announced that Legends of Tomorrow would not be returning for an eighth season on The CW, bringing an end to the long-running and popular superhero series.

Locke And Key

The Netflix fantasy horror series Locke & Key will came to an end in August 202 when the show’s third and final season premiered on the streaming service.

Love, Victor

In February 2022 it was announced that Hulu’s romantic comedy-drama series, Love, Victor, would be coming to an end following the conclusion of the show’s third season, which premiered on June 15, 2022.

Made For Love

The Cristin Milioti-led tech dramedy Made for Love was cancelled by HBO Max after two seasons in June 2022, according to EW.

Magnum, P.I.

Fans of the Magnum P.I. reboot series on CBS will have to find another way to spend their Friday nights, as the long-running action crime drama was cancelled just days after the Season 4 finale in May 2022, per Deadline.

Maury

After 30 seasons and more than 3,600 episodes, the daytime talk show Maury aired its final episode in May 2022, just a few months after host Maury Povich announced he would be retiring.

Mr. Mayor

Ted Danson’s NBC sitcom Mr. Mayor, which followed a former ad executive played by the beloved actor as he ran and became the mayor of Los Angeles, was cancelled by NBC in May 2022, per The Hollywood Reporter, bringing an end to its two-season run.

Naomi

The superhero drama series, Naomi, was another show cancelled by The CW in May 2022, a decision that was announced just days after the Season 1 finale aired.

New Amsterdam

The popular medical drama series, New Amsterdam, was cancelled by NBC in March 2022, but the show starring Ryan Eggold as a medical director who comes up with a revolutionary way of caring for patients will return for a fifth and final season, per Deadline.

Nick Cannon

In March 2022 it was announced that another daytime talk show would be closing up shop, as Nick Cannon was cancelled after just one season on TV.

Ordinary Joe

The NBC drama series Ordinary Joe, which debuted in September 2021, was cancelled by the network in March 2022, according to Variety. 

Ozark

The popular crime drama series Ozark, which has been one of the best shows on Netflix since its 2017 debut, ended things with a two-part, 14-episode final season in 2022. The first part of Ozark Season 4 premiered January 21, 2022, with the second half following in April.

Peaky Blinders

The worldwide sensation that is Peaky Blinders will completed its run with the sixth and final season in April 2022. But it’s not the end of the road for Steven Knight’s crime drama as a film adaptation is set to enter production in 2023.

Queen Sugar

Ava DuVernay’s OWN drama series Queen Sugar is another show that will end things in 2022. In November 2021, Deadline reported that the series, which debuted in 2016, wrapped up in November 2022.

Raised By Wolves

The science-fiction series Raised By Wolves, created by Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, and Aaron Guzikowski, was cancelled by HBO Max in June 2022, according to Variety. The series, which debuted in 2020 on the streaming service, completed its second and final season in March 2022.

Roswell, New Mexico

When Roswell, New Mexico Season 4 starts up on The CW in June 2022, it will be the final set of episodes for The CW’s sci-fi drama series, which was cancelled alongside several other scripted programs in May 2022.

Search Party

The HBO Max dark comedy series Search Party returned for a fifth and final season on January 7, 2022, bringing an end to the Alia Shawkat-led show that originally started out on TBS back in 2016. 

This Is Us

One of the most successful runs on broadcast TV in recent memory will come to an end with the conclusion of This Is Us Season 6, which officially got underway January 4, 2022 on NBC. 

The Walking Dead

Perhaps the biggest TV show that came to an end in 2022, The Walking Dead concluded its 11-season run on AMC. The decision to bring the long-running series to a close was first announced in 2020, when it was revealed that the supercharged season would consist of 24 episodes.

United States Of Al

Just one week before United States of Al Season 2 was set to conclude on CBS, the Chuck Lorre-produced sitcom was cancelled by the network, according to EW.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 20 of New Amsterdam Season 4, called “Rise.”

New Amsterdam opened “Rise” with Max “How Can I Help?” Goodwin just about more helpless than ever before in Season 4, after his big swing to take Veronica Fuentes down due to her criminal negligence failed to work. Not only that, but a non-compete agreement in his contract meant that he couldn’t get a job practicing medicine anywhere other than New Amsterdam. He was out of ideas and pretty much out of options… but it turned out that he didn’t have to be the one making the moves for Fuentes to be defeated, and the medical drama has officially wrapped a major storyline.

In fact, New Amsterdam wrapped such a major storyline that it’s almost hard to imagine what’s left after “Rise.” Veronica Fuentes is officially out at the hospital. After she outlasted every single one of Max’s attempts to oust her, it was a strike by the essential workers who were suffering due to her policies and cost-cutting that ultimately took her down, much to Brantley’s delight. While a crowd of strikers outside chanted for her to go, Fuentes took off her badge. Her time at the top of New Amsterdam is done, which resolves the major conflict of the season… when there are still two episodes to go. 

So, let’s take a look at all the stories that are still going, and could take more of the spotlight now that Fuentes is gone. 

Max Has A Choice To Make

Max has been all-in on helping the hospital ever since he returned for Vijay’s funeral and saw for himself what it was like under Fuentes as sole medical director, but he has officially accomplished his goal and is free to return to his life in London with Helen. It may not be so easy, however, as Brantley made the point that the strikers were inspired by Max, and they wouldn’t really have their hospital back if he wasn’t there to run it. He’ll have to decide between his life in London and staying in New York, which may not be an easy decision to make. A lot likely depends on what Helen wants – or is willing – to do. 

Reynolds Has Father Issues

Reynolds came to an important decision when he chose to let Malvo and Baptiste move away from New York to raise his unborn child themselves, although he intends to be involved in some capacity. He has begun telling people about his impending fatherhood, with his sister in the previous episode and Dr. Wilder in “Rise.” He hasn’t told his mom yet, but instead went to her to ask about finding his father, against his sister’s advice. He wants to find his dad while waiting for his own child to be born, which tracks with what the showrunners had to say about his “father issues” in the second half of Season 4. 

Bloom Is Helping Leyla

Bloom and Leyla may be broken up, but their lives are almost more entwined than ever after the end of “Rise,” in ways that seem guaranteed to cause complications. After Bloom agreed to front Leyla the money to pay a lawyer to fight against deportation, Leyla ran into another problem due to her lack of a permanent address, which weakened her case so much that there was no hope of fighting it. Bloom instead declared that Leyla should move back in with her to officially have an address again, which seems bound to emotionally backfire on one or both of them. EP David Schulner did preview that “it gets even messier” and “even harder” for them!

Iggy And The Aftermath of Trevor

Iggy made his own bed when he hired Trevor simply because he was flattered by the nurse’s attention, and now he has to lie in it. After more or less putting Trevor in a position where quitting was one of his only options, Iggy used some questionable methods with a patient in “Rise,” all while he’s supposed to be attending therapy himself to try and work on what made him keep secrets from Martin. I’m not altogether convinced that Iggy won’t face any professional backlash for the Trevor situation, but it does seem safe to say that Martin isn’t going to let his husband off easily this time. 

Helen Is On Her Own In London

Helen managed to recover from her stroke quickly enough to return to her job in London while Max stayed behind in New York again to keep trying to fix New Amsterdam. It allowed her to spend some valuable time with her mom in the previous episode, but a medical case involving parents not being able to let go of their comatose child hit her hard now that she has become Luna’s mom. She doesn’t seem to have too much of an ongoing storyline now that she has evidently recovered from her stroke, but the promo for what comes next indicates that trouble is on the way: 

Apparently, Helen and Max are moving forward with getting married pretty quickly, as Helen is already trying on her veil, but it doesn’t look like they have a smooth road to the altar. The last couple seconds of the promo have Helen saying “I don’t know how to tell you this” to her fiancé over the phone, and then starting to cry. Has something happened to her mom? Is she still dealing with lingering effects from her stroke that Max doesn’t know about? Is she upset because she got some bad news about whether or not she can have kids?

Normally, I would think it’s a bit of a reach to wonder if the moment of Helen crying to Max has something to do with wanting children based on nothing but a few moments in a promo, but it was a major plot point not that long ago when she refused a hysterectomy even when it had the best chance of saving her life, and she mentioned motherhood again in “Rise” in reference to Luna. For her sake, I’m just hoping that whatever is making her cry is something that can be resolved as painlessly has possible. She has had a rough enough season already!

Only two episodes of New Amsterdam are left before the medical drama heads into summer hiatus, but fans at least don’t have to worry that the show will be cancelled on a Season 4 cliffhanger. Although the show does have an end in sight, it won’t be until the close of Season 5, and fans can always rewatch episodes streaming with a Peacock subscription to fill the days until Max and Co. return in the fall.

Spoilers ahead for the May 9 episode of New Amsterdam, called “Truth Be Told.”

New Amsterdam aired a new episode on a special night with “Truth Be Told,” and it delivered some game-changing confrontations between none other than Max and Fuentes. Ryan Eggold and Michelle Forbes’ characters have gone back and forth with each other over the course of Season 4, but Max’s big swing that seemed like a sure thing to take her down ultimately didn’t work. Jean Lee, who directed the episode, broke down their two confrontations from “Truth Be Told.”

Korean-American writer/director Jean Lee came to New Amsterdam from NBCU’s Female Forward program that strives to create gender parity in scripted TV directing, and she helmed “Truth Be Told” (which you can rewatch with a Peacock subscription) after shadowing some different directors on the medical drama. With New Amsterdam quickly approaching its Season 4 finale, her episode saw Max prove that Fuentes was guilty of criminal negligence, and he put the wheels in motion on a raid that shook Fuentes enough that she showed fear and a willingness to resign for the first time. 

When Lee spoke with CinemaBlend, she broke down the direction for Ryan Eggold and Michelle Forbes in the Max/Fuentes hallway confrontation:

New Amsterdam explored some different sides of Veronica Fuentes earlier in Season 4, but mostly via flashback. In the present, she has been the most formidable foe that Max has faced over the four seasons of the series, so Max finally getting a win over her and her feeling what it’s like to not have the power felt like it was a long time coming. According to the director, the actors really rose to the occasion of showing the complexity of the scene, which turned out to be even more important than it initially seemed by the end of the episode.

By the end of the hour, Max discovered that his victory was short-lived after getting inventive yet again. Despite all of the proof of Fuentes’ negligence, it wasn’t going to be enough to take her down because the company behind the whole scheme was just too big. Max hadn't taken her resignation when she'd offered it because he wanted her to go down for her crimes, but now she’s keeping her role as medical director, and Max seems more out of luck than ever. 

Michelle Forbes continued to deliver as Veronica Fuentes as her character resumed her role at the top; when I noted that the actress has been so good at playing bad over Season 4, Jean Lee shared:

Actor Jocko Sims, who plays Reynolds on New Amsterdam, has also noted Michelle Forbes’ ability to play different layers of Fuentes, and Forbes’ scenes in “Truth Be Told” might not have worked as well as they did if not for the actress finding the nuance behind Fuentes. Jean Lee had only good things to say about her as an actress after directing what turned out to be an important episode for her character, even though the other characters might not all have good things to say about Fuentes! The director also weighed in on Ryan Eggold as Max in their final scene, when Max learned that his win wouldn’t last. She said: 

Max “How Can I Help?” Goodwin has faced challenge after challenge in Season 4, and even had to return to New York shortly after trying to seize a happily-ever-after with Helen in London following the death of Vijay. New Amsterdam has already received an order for a fifth and final season, so there’s plenty of time for him to score the win that he deserves, but only time will tell if he gets that chance before the end of the fourth season, after the events of “Truth Be Told.”

New Amsterdam returned from its spring break with a pair of episodes that not only ended on huge cliffhangers, but also delivered massive twists for the core characters to deal with as Season 4 continues. For Helen, that means recovery from her stroke, so soon after Max proposed. Iggy’s marriage is on the rocks as a consequence of his too-close-for-comfort relationship with Trevor, and Dr. Castries nearly froze. As for Reynolds and Bloom… well, based on what executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton had to say, their lives aren’t exactly about to get easier. Let’s start with Reynolds!

After spending most of the season (which you can revisit with a Peacock subscription) struggling with Dr. Malvo’s pregnancy, Reynolds got the news that he is indeed the biological father of her child. His joy was short-lived, as he then got the news that Malvo and her husband were planning to move away from New York. Reynolds ultimately decided that even though he was determined not to abandon his child the same way that his own father abandoned him, having Malvo and Baptiste as parents wouldn’t be abandoning. He’ll be in the child’s life when the time is right, but that time is not now. 

When the executive producers spoke with CinemaBlend about New Amsterdam’s return from its break, they shared why the show led Reynolds to make that monumental decision when he was looking forward to becoming a father. David Schulner explained:

New Amsterdam still has Season 4 to finish, not to mention a full Season 5 before the series finale! No character can get everything that they want at this point (if ever), so for Reynolds this means facing his own father issues after deciding to give up a relationship with his own biological child for the foreseeable future. 

It clearly wasn’t a decision that the character was happy about, but he did it with the best of intentions, and it may be the best call possible out of a bad situation. Peter Horton weighed in on how this storyline can give Reynolds some insight into his own father, saying: 

Even though this wasn’t the most cheerful of twists for Reynolds (who actor Jocko Sims has said would “be a great father”), it does help open the door for some more insight into the character and why he is the way that he is. Up to this point, New Amsterdam has focused more on his relationship with his mother; now, viewers know more about his dad.

Reynolds definitely isn’t the only character whose future could be pretty complicated after the events of the last couple of episodes. Bloom desperately wanted a second chance with Leyla, but got the awful news that her ex-girlfriend is facing deportation back to Pakistan unless a lawyer is able to find a way out. The problem was that the lawyer required a $10,000 retainer and $10,000 per month afterwards, and Leyla had to go to Bloom to ask for the money.

Initially, Bloom had her reservations, because their relationship would be transactional if she gives Leyla the money, which was part of the problem that led to their breakup in the first place. The former ED doctor decided to give her the money anyway, which bodes well for Leyla hopefully getting to stay at the hospital, but not particularly well for any kind of normal relationship between them. Executive producer David Schulner previewed what the future looks like for them:

Find out what happens next on New Amsterdam with new episodes on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. On top of all the new issues that the characters will have to deal with after the doomed karaoke night, they’re still facing the problem of Veronica Fuentes running the hospital. Max has a plan to oust her, but he’s undoubtedly going to be concerned about helping Helen as well, and some of the others might have more than getting rid of her on their minds as well. Iggy certainly has some amends to try and make in his marriage, for one!

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD for Episode 17 of New Amsterdam Season 4, called “Unfinished Business.”

For any fans who thought that New Amsterdam would tie off all the cliffhanger stories from the spring premiere in the span of one episode, “Unfinished Business” proved that there are definitely lasting consequences to the karaoke night out. Although there were multiple near-death experiences, Helen had the worst reaction to the drugs. She recovered long enough for Max to propose, but was experiencing another health crisis at the very end of the episode. Executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton confirmed what exactly happened to her, what it means for her moving forward, and previewed how worried fans should be. 

Helen’s reaction to the drugs involved complication after complication, and surgery after surgery, with possible stroke if she didn’t agree to a hysterectomy among other procedures. She refused to have the hysterectomy because she imagined a future with Max involving siblings for Luna, and all seemed well with Max rushing off to get the ring and make their engagement official before it all fell apart. Speaking with CinemaBlend about “Unfinished Business,” David Schulner confirmed that Helen “has suffered a massive stroke” right after things were going so well, and it’s not something that she can just bounce back from. Peter Horton elaborated:

For this brilliant doctor who has saved lives over and over and over again during the course of her career, the loss of her ability to speak and form words sounds like a nightmare, not to mention coming so shortly after getting engaged and talking about expanding her family with Max. He looked like he was being traumatized all over again at the end of “Unfinished Business,” so there’s also the question of how he’ll be able to handle Helen's new status quo in what remains of the 2021-2022 TV season. Is love truly going to be enough for them to go back to what they were? 

Well, fans will just have to wait, hope, and see on that front, but it seems clear that this isn’t a storyline that will be wrapped up in the immediate future. When I asked the executive producers how worried viewers should be about Helen after her stroke at the end of “Unfinished Business,” Peter Horton shared: 

The good news is at least that Helen has survived the drugs and her reaction while they were still in her system, and it’s safe to say that Max isn’t going to abandon her in her time of need. Plus, David Schulner and Peter Horton confirmed that the other four people who were drugged – Dr. Castries (despite her cold cliffhanger), Dr. Wilder, Trevor, and Casey (who was finally discovered by Bloom and Leyla after their important conversation) – are out of the woods as of the end of “Unfinished Business.” That’s not to say that there won’t be consequences, as Martin is finally aware of Iggy and Trevor’s situation.

Tune in to NBC on Tuesday, May 3 for the next new episode of New Amsterdam to reveal the aftermath of Helen’s stroke in Season 4. Not too many weeks are left before the fourth season finale in May, so be sure not to miss an episode!

New Amsterdam ended the latest episode on no fewer than five cliffhangers involving five different characters, but they’re not the only ones facing an uncertain future. Bloom and Leyla’s relationship came to an abrupt end when Leyla found out the price that her girlfriend had paid for her slot in the ED, but there’s definitely no closure there, and now Leyla’s facing possible deportation due to a problem with her visa. In an emotional scene from the next episode – fittingly called “Unfinished Business” – that will air on April 26 (seen above), they address some of the issues lingering over them.

The two women don’t exactly look like they’re out for a nice leisurely stroll on the winter streets of New York City, but Bloom takes their time alone together to get some answers about Leyla’s visa. Unfortunately, Leyla’s time living in her car combined with her case officer changing means that she might be deported, and there’s no pro bono legal aid for her to take advantage of. At the high price of a $10,000 retainer and then $10,000 monthly afterwards for a lawyer, Leyla’s future seems pretty hopeless… unless Bloom agrees to help. 

On the one hand, Bloom did “donate” $90,000 to get Leyla the ED slot at New Amsterdam, so it’s not like she hasn’t been willing to shell out money for her before. Then again, she and Leyla were a couple at the time, and Bloom dishing out the bribe was because she didn’t want them to be separated. Leyla being sent back to Pakistan is a whole lot farther away than a different residency program outside of New York, but will Bloom agree to pay that much money indefinitely for a woman who broke up with her, and it’s not a sure thing to work? 

Bloom has made a lot of questionable decisions over the past season or so, so it’s hard to guess which way she might go. The selfless decision would be to agree to pay for Leyla’s lawyer, but that would complicate a situation that Bloom probably wishes was a lot simpler already. 

And this is on top of whatever has happened to Casey, who she only just reconciled with! If his situation is anything like Helen’s – who was passed out on the floor of her apartment in the final moments of the last episode (which you can revisit streaming with Peacock) – then Bloom might need more than a taco hat to make sure that there’s a future for their friendship. Especially if he – like Castries, who was out in the cold when last seen – isn’t in ideal circumstances. 

All things considered, the stakes are sky-high heading into the second half of this New Amsterdam two-parter. The executive producers have even weighed in on why they got to “blow things up” with this pair of episodes after the plans for the spring premiere had to change. “Unfinished Business” will see the entire team continuing to have to deal with the consequences of their karaoke night gone wrong, which may go better for some than for others. Hopefully all five of the people whose fates are unknown just survive the night!

New Amsterdam fans had to wait almost two months between new episodes in Season 4, but the show didn’t hold back in delivering some jaw-dropping twists in the spring premiere. The episode ended on cliffhangers for no fewer than five characters, and was the first half of a two-parter. The medical drama isn’t known for two-parters, and executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton opened up to CinemaBlend about why they were able to go bigger than ever with the story in Season 4. 

The first half of the two-parter (available streaming on Peacock) turned a night of drunken karaoke into a crisis that has left at least one character collapsed on the floor, and the other four with their fates unknown. The EPs already explained the trauma that Max is in for with Helen’s state, and the “insane” process behind Dr. Castries’ cold cliffhanger indicates that she’s not doing so well either. Things also weren’t looking great for Casey, Dr. Wilder, and Trevor. 

When I spoke with the producers about the goals and challenges of the two-parter, David Schulner explained why they can figuratively “blow things up” in ways that they couldn’t before: 

New Amsterdam may not be too likely to actually blow things up – although who knows after how the show ended its spring premiere? The episode certainly blew up what seemed like a fun night out and potentially the status quo at the hospital for the foreseeable future, depending on whether all five victims recover from what happened to them after karaoke. Even after Season 3 covered how the hospital handled the worst of the COVID pandemic, it wasn’t until Season 4 that fans really got to see the show embrace some “jazz” and this kind of two-parter. 

The original plan for the spring premiere had to change, so this two-parter was intended to air very differently on NBC. Instead of being split by the break, both halves ultimately followed Renée Zellweger’s The Thing About Pam limited series. Peter Horton explained how airing the two-parter without a break of weeks between episodes turned out to be “a lot of fun,” saying:

The two-parter may be fun for viewers to watch from home, but certainly hasn’t been much fun for the characters following the karaoke night! Unless, of course, Bloom wearing the taco hat for most of a work day counts for her coworkers, and that was a nice light plot point in an episode featuring some pretty foreboding developments. Even aside from whatever happened to those five characters, Iggy seemed on the verge of making a very bad decision when it comes to Trevor. At least Max had his proposal to look forward to! Hopefully he’ll still be able to pop the question to Helen. 

Find out with the next new episode of New Amsterdam on Tuesday, April 26 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC as the second half of the two-part event. The characters may be less likely to let loose again moving forward after the karaoke night backfired, and fans can only imagine at this point what Veronica will make of the situation when she returns to New York. Luckily, there are still several weeks of new episodes before the Season 4 finale in May!

Spoilers ahead for the April 19 episode of New Amsterdam Season 4, called “All Night Long.”

New Amsterdam returned from nearly two months of hiatus with an episode that started with fun karaoke shenanigans and ended with the lives of no fewer than five key characters in question. Helen, Wilder, Casey, Trevor, and Dr. Castries are all seemingly down for the count, and the doctor of holistic medicine was not in good shape the last time that viewers saw her. The next episode will reveal all of their fates, but director (and former Lost star) Nestor Carbonell broke down the cliffhanger for Dr. Castries, and shared with CinemaBlend why it was “insane.”

Unlike Helen and Dr. Wilder, Dr. Mia Castries wasn’t at home when whatever happened started to affect her. She rode her bike to a pier after getting what seemed to be some distressing news about a relationship, and was looking over the edge… dangerously close to the railing on a very cold night. When I spoke with Nestor Carbonell about his work on the spring premiere, he explained what went into filming Dr. Castries’ ambiguous ending in the episode:

Actress Genevieve Angelson – whose character initially didn’t get the warmest of welcome from the doctors who thought she was a plant by Veronica Fuentes – wasn’t exactly bundled into layer after layer of thermal gear for her scene on the water in New York. So, as the director noted, she was very cold while also playing Castries slowly succumbing to the same ailment that had Helen passed out cold at the end of “All Night Long.” 

The scene had to show the danger that she was in by leaning over the edge, while making it clear that she was not trying to harm herself. Even though she’d had a rough night at the karaoke bar, she wasn’t attempting anything. Nestor Carbonell continued, explaining how he made the challenging (and cold) scene work for Castries’ story: 

Safety was a priority during the real-life shoot of the scene, whereas Dr. Castries was in very real danger the last time that the episode checked in on her. Thanks to some tricks of the camera, directing maneuvers, and contributions from the art department, the sense of peril was there without anybody being in danger on set. Of course, all the benches and harnesses in the world weren’t going to raise the temperature above freezing, and the director shared the kinds of decisions he had to make when it came to getting his shots despite the cold:

Just as Nestor Carbonell had to roll with some complications because of the cold, executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton opened up about changing the premiere episode due to unexpected timing changes in the 2022 TV schedule. The changes mean that fans don’t have as long of a wait to find out the fates of Dr. Castries, Dr. Wilder, Trevor, Casey, and Helen, but that doesn’t mean that all the news will be good. The producers also previewed how Max will react to the trauma of Helen’s health crisis after losing Georgia, and things aren’t looking great for any of those afflicted. 

Luckily, the wait for all of the cliffhanger resolutions is almost over. The next new episode of New Amsterdam airs on Tuesday, April 26 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. The Season 4 finale is just about a month away, and the show will officially come to an end after the fifth season, so be sure not to miss an episode.

New Amsterdam is officially back after nearly two months off the air, and “All Night Long” delivered the kinds of twists that might keep fans up all night long as well. A night of fun, karaoke, and revelry took some very dark turns for several of the characters, and the episode ended on a cliffhanger with the lives of no fewer than five in the balance. For Max, this means facing the prospect of a medical crisis for another woman he deeply loves, after the death of his wife in early Season 2. Executive producers Peter Horton and David Schulner broke down what happened and what’s ahead for the medical drama.

The structure of “All Night Long” meant the same night playing out from different characters’ perspectives over and over again, and some had a better night than others. The morning after was pretty bad for everybody, ranging from hangovers to Bloom wearing a taco hat to a handful who were missing and not answering their calls.

The episode ended with the reveal of Helen passed out on the floor of the apartment, and big questions about what’s ahead for her and the others still unaccounted for. When the executive producers spoke with CinemaBlend about “All Night Long,” Peter Horton shared how Max will handle Helen’s health crisis after losing Georgia not that long ago: 

Poor Max is facing the possibility of losing Helen just after he was finally preparing to propose to her, which honestly seems like it would be enough for PTSD even if he hadn’t already gone through his heartbreak with Georgia’s death. And Helen's isn’t the only life in the balance, as Casey, Trevor, Dr. Castries, and Dr. Wilder are all presumably in the same situation. 

Considering that “All Night Long” was originally intended to air back in February, maybe fans should be glad for the delay that means just a week of waiting for what happens next instead of two months. Dr. Reynolds made the point that they were all in the same bar the night before, so something must have happened that just those five were missing. 

Since all the characters were in the same place but not necessarily all drinking the same drinks – Iggy certainly seemed to be sticking to bad champagne and potentially worse decisions – it seems like they could have either been drugged or drank something that had gone bad. 

This episode did feature the debut of Adam Rose as a surly bartender. Executive producer David Schulner didn’t spoil the resolution to the mystery of what happened to the five characters, but did promise that the reveal will come soon:

Well, that doesn’t sound good for Helen and the others, but if anybody can solve the mystery of what’s wrong with them and save their lives, it would surely be the doctors at New Amsterdam. Then again, they’re under an unusual amount of stress with people close to them in danger, and according to the EPs, those people won’t all be suffering in exactly the same way. 

When I asked if there was any one of the five who fans should be particularly worried about or is worse off than the others, Peter Horton shared that “they’re all pretty bad,” and David Schulner elaborated: 

Even though things are looking pretty dark for the characters of New Amsterdam, fans at least have the good news that the show isn’t heading into another break, and the finale in the 2022 TV schedule doesn’t air until May 24. The next new episode that will reveal some answers about who targeted the characters debuts on Tuesday, April 26 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. 

At this point, the threat of Veronica Fuentes seems very distant, and all seems to be forgiven with Reynolds betraying the others after his big gesture to make amends, but there is still plenty to wonder about over the next week. 

Nearly two months have passed since New Amsterdam aired its last new episode, with Renée Zellweger’s The Thing About Pam taking over the time slot starting in March. The medical drama is finally returning with an episode that will involve karaoke, drinking, and consequences along with the medical cases of the week, but the executive producers have shared with CinemaBlend that the plan for the spring premiere had to change. Plus, there are some exciting reveals along the way, including which members of the cast can sing! 

The most recent episode of New Amsterdam ahead of “All Night Long” on April 19 aired all the way back in February, and it ended on a fairly hopeful note with Max figuring out a plan to take down Veronica Fuentes with some unexpected help from Reynolds, and it even delivered some backstory on Veronica to explain why she is the way that she is. It didn’t close on a cliffhanger, however, and executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton explained how the story was supposed to be different. 

When I asked the New Amsterdam executive producers about whether or not the show has a time jump to correspond to the nearly two months of a break, David Schulner shared that there’s “not really” one for the spring premiere, and Peter Horton elaborated:

The original plan for the spring premiere wasn’t for “All Night Long” as Episode 16 on April 19, but rather for Episode 17 to air. If the schedule had gone according to plan, then fans would have seen New Amsterdam’s karaoke night (which director Nestor Carbonell promised will show characters “letting loose” with different sides) weeks ago, before The Thing About Pam premiered. 

Fortunately, fans will finally get to watch the episode that was planned to air before the weeks of break, and all signs point toward a story that will deliver interesting developments for most of the major characters. Whether or not that’s a good thing for an episode that will force these characters to deal with the consequences of their actions remains to be seen, but there is at least one thing that is pretty much guaranteed to be 100% fun, as EP Peter Horton previewed:

The cast of New Amsterdam is comprised of talented actors, but does that mean they’re all talented singers? Apparently not, but that’s realistic. After all, the point of karaoke is to have fun rather than belt Grammy-worthy performances, and it sounds like the characters will be having some fun during the night out. David Schulner elaborated on what the karaoke night will bring in “All Night Long”: 

The karaoke night will include the newer characters as well as the longtime major characters, which may not be good for Iggy and Martin’s marriage, if Trevor is feeling flirty! Dr. Castries seemed to gain some respect from the other doctors after she didn’t betray them to Fuentes (with Reynolds as the guilty party), and Dr. Wilder’s role as the new Max in his absence meant that she fit right in. But how will they blend in with drinking and revelry at karaoke night? 

And will Casey and Bloom “figure their shit out,” as David Schulner suggested? His firing wasn’t her fault, but their friendship fractured over Bloom’s decisions regarding Leyla. It may take more than a duet for Bloom to mend that fence, but who knows? Anything can happen at karaoke night, as Peter Horton noted:

The doctors of New Amsterdam have earned a night to let their hair down after trying to still do their jobs to the best of their abilities despite Dr. Fuentes’ interference, and I think it’s probably safe to say that Fuentes was not invited out for some karaoke. Fans can finally find out – and see the episode that was not originally intended to be the spring premiere – with “All Night Long” on Tuesday, April 19 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC in the 2022 TV schedule.

There aren’t too many episodes left of New Amsterdam Season 4, as the finale airs on May 24, so be sure to tune in. The medical drama has already been renewed for Season 5, although the fifth season will also be the last for Max and Co, so the stakes are high as Season 4 winds down.
