Benny Blanco and Selena Gomez are couple goals, and that’s been proven time and time again. However, I think they just hammered that point home as hard as they could, as Blanco revealed the romantic gesture he’s doing to get to Selena Gomez, who has been filming in London for months.

For the last few months, the cast of Only Murders in the Building has been filming Season 6 in London. Steve Martin has been posting about his adventures with Selena Gomez and Martin Short across the pond (this included an incredible video of Gomez singing a song from The Greatest Showman). Meanwhile, Nicola Coughlan and Jodie Whittaker, the new additions to the cast, have been spotted filming outside, per Digital Spy. Now, it would seem that Benny Blanco has set sail (literally) to join them, and specifically his wife, in the UK, as he posted on TikTok:

Am I surprised by this? Yes. However, should I have felt that way? No. Remember, Benny Blanco is the man who gifted Selena Gomez a bathtub full of nacho cheese for Valentine’s Day. Plus, their wedding featured cute and unique details like a coupon book. So, this kind of grand gesture is on-brand.

It also makes sense for him, because he’s been open about the fact that he’s very afraid of flying. In fact, in April, he posted a TikTok about taking his first flight in over eight years, noting that this was “monumental” for him.

Now, he’s back to taking a boat across the Atlantic, as he’s decided to travel by way of the sea instead of the air this time. So, soon, he’ll be reunited with his wife, and that’s very exciting. The two have been apart a lot this year, but clearly they’re putting in the work to spend time together when they can.

While it’s not confirmed, it seems likely that Gomez is in London because of Only Murders in the Building. They’ve been filming Season 6 there all summer, and production is ongoing. The story should pick up with the mystery involving Tina Fey’s character Cinda Canning, and my hope and expectation is that it will premiere sometime on the 2026 TV schedule.

I also hope Benny Blanco can make a little cameo. We know he’s funny, and considering the number of cameos that happen on this show, I don’t think it’d be super out of place to have him pop up. Plus, he’s traversed the ocean to see his wife; this could be a fun little add-on to his trip too.

However, no matter what, I’m just happy the two get to spend time together. Clearly, it’s very valuable to them, and Blanco is willing to take a boat to have some quality time with Gomez. Hopefully, we’ll get to learn a bit more about his trip across the pond. Meanwhile, we’ll also have to start counting down the days until we can stream Only Murders in the Building, the show the actress has been working on in London, with a Hulu subscription.

Gomez took some time this week to get honest about missing her hubby, and Blanco had some fun and sweet reactions to share in return.

It looks like the pair have a lot of great moments for her to recall while they are physically away from each other. They just finished their third year together and are going on their fourth year as a couple. I imagine it can’t be easy to be apart, especially since they are a couple who seem to be best friends as much as partners who “do everything together”. Blanco also wrote this in the comments:

Gomez has been in London shooting Only Murders in the Building with Steve Martin and Martin Short since mid-May. She and her castmates have been taking fans along with them on the shoot in a way by sharing a bunch of behind-the-scenes moments, such as Gomez dramatically performing a Greatest Showman song on set. A release date has yet to be announced for the new season, but I imagine (and hope) we’ll be able to enjoy the new season with our Hulu subscriptions later this year.

In the meantime, it seems like Blanco is holding down the fort in the couple's shared estate in Beverly Hills, California. He's also apparently staying busy, as Blanco does a weekly podcast with his best friend, Lil Dicky, and Dave’s wife, Kristen Batalucco, at their home in Los Angeles as well. Blanco's also reportedly working on a book, and I wouldn't be surprised if he were working on some music-related projects as well.

While it's bittersweet knowing Gomez an Blanco are apart, I love seeing this exchange between these two, and I hope they keep them coming!

If there’s one TV show set I’d love to be on the most, it would absolutely be Only Murders In The Building. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez always look like they are having the best time making the comedy, and this was further proven when a wonderful moment from the set had Selena Gomez performing The Greatest Showman to her cast members like she was alone in her bedroom. What’s even better is Hugh Jackman took notice.

But given Jackman’s lovely response, should Gomez go full musical for a The Greatest Showman sequel? Back in 2024, he was open to the idea of reprising his role of P.T. Barnum, but no official plans have ever been revealed. That aside, I need more chaotic posts like this from Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as they continue to film Only Murders.

Only Murders in the Building has been a hit on Hulu for five seasons now — with a sixth set to premiere later on the 2026 TV schedule. Part of what has drawn audiences to the murder mystery series is the chemistry between its three leads — Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. The unlikely pairing of the singer with the iconic comedians led to real-life friendships, and Gomez proved that with her sweet words about Short’s new documentary.

The upcoming documentary Marty: Life Is Short will be available to those with a Netflix subscription on May 12, diving into Martin Short’s life and five-decade career in comedy. Selena Gomez caught an early screening, and she raved about it to her 406 million Instagram followers afterward, writing:

That’s a pretty sweet endorsement, and it was accompanied by several photos of the two. In one pic, Gomez has her arms wrapped around Short’s shoulders as they talk to Jimmy Fallon. Others show them facing each other as they hold hands, walking arm-in-arm down the street, getting in a group hug with Steve Martin and some sweet selfies. They are straight-up bestie goals — the friendship I never knew I needed.

Selena Gomez has admitted she was nervous about working with the comedy icons on the first week of Only Murders in the Building, and Martin Short was afraid she’d be a pop princess nightmare. Their fears were quickly allayed, however, as Gomez quickly became the new third amigo, so to speak.

The trio is so close that Steve Martin and Martin Short even attended Selena Gomez’s wedding to Benny Blanco. (This was despite Short being faux upset that Blanco didn’t ask her “TV dads” for permission to propose, but the SNL alum got the last laugh, I suppose, when he literally ruined their wedding cake.)

The generational comedy that’s generated by the trio extends off the screen of OMITB, with the pop star teaching her elder co-stars about TikTok trends and posting sweet selfies, despite the fact that — as she pointed out in her post above — Martin Short doesn’t have social media.

When it comes to awards shows in the entertainment world, people say that it’s an honor just to be nominated. I’ve begun to believe that more and more over the years, and now I know it’s even more true than I thought, because it turns out sometimes being nominated can be near impossible. That became clear when I learned about an Emmy rule that has made it so one of Meryl Streep's performances can't be recognized this year.

Every award show needs to have rules regarding what it takes to be nominated for a given award, and those rules will always change over time in an attempt to find the most appropriate balance. However, one recent rule change regarding acting nominations for the Emmys really doesn’t seem right, as it's arguably screwed over a lot of great performances.

The Emmys Made A Change To Its Guest Performer Rules

Variety reveals that at the beginning of 2025, the TV Academy, which runs the Emmys, made a rule change that stated that an actor who previously had been nominated for a Lead or Supporting acting Emmy could not submit their name in the Guest Performance category for the same role. The problem, according to one veteran publicist, is that it keeps dramatic performances from multi-season series out, while still leaving the door open to say, a former Saturday Night Live cast member who returns to host the show. They said…

One major example of this is Meryl Streep. She was nominated for Supporting Comedy Actress for Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building. Then, she returned as the same character in a guest star capacity for the next two seasons. However, the rule made her ineligible to submit for Guest Performance for Season 4 of the show, and she isn’t eligible for Season 5 for the same reason.

The rule also bars James Marsden, who was nominated for Supporting Drama Actor for the first season of Hulu’s Paradise. He only appeared in two episodes of Season 2, which wouldn’t qualify him for the supporting category this year, but he can't be submitted for Guest Performance either because of the rule.

At the same time, somebody like Amy Poehler, who was nominated for Emmys more than once for her years as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, can be submitted as a Guest Performance for hosting a Season 51 episode, because as the “host,” she’s not playing the same role.

It has to be said, this rule does feel like splitting hairs. It’s an odd punishment for success because if Meryl Streep or James Marsden hadn’t had their larger performances deemed worthy of nomination, they would be fully eligible to be nominated in the Guest role. It also doesn’t appear that the rule works in reverse. If somebody is nominated in the Guest Performance role and is then promoted to a larger role in a later season, the double nomination appears to be possible.

Emmy nominations for this year will be announced in July. If your favorite Guest Performance isn’t nominated, it’s worth remembering that it may not be because it wasn’t great, it may have just been against the rules.

Martin Short has spent decades playing lovable agents of chaos, but even by his standards, his latest real-life mishap feels almost too on-brand. During a recent interview, the comedy legend casually confessed to a wedding faux pas that nearly ruined Selena Gomez’s wedding cake. And as funny as the hijinx sounds on paper, my favorite part is the classic comment he gave Paul Rudd.

The SNL icon shared this hilarious story with his usual mix of sincerity and self-awareness on Jimmy Kimmel Live. In the clip, the Captain Ron actor recounts how what began as an innocent assumption about Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s reception quickly turned into a moment he now admits was…not great. According to the Three Amigos star, as his fellow OMITB costar Steve Martin began to leave the wedding, the legendary comedy performer insisted he not leave until he had a bit of cake:

The problem, as Short soon realized, was that the cake he’d confidently attacked wasn’t a spare dessert for their seating area—it was “the” wedding cake. To make matters worse, this revelation came roughly an hour before it was scheduled to be presented to the bride and groom. Faced with the gravity of his mistake, the Canadian-American star briefly considered a tactical retreat. Turning to Paul Rudd and his wife, who were seated nearby, he deadpanned:

Luckily for everyone, the chef was able to do some last-minute cosmetic repairs. When the cake eventually made its official appearance, it looked fine… mostly. Short, for his part, made it clear that his affection for Gomez — he has previously described her as “an extra child” — remains unchanged, even if his wedding guest credentials are now questionable.

The Innerspace actor recalled turning to his longtime friend, Rudd, after the damage was done and delivering what can only be described as a perfectly timed, deeply Martin Short comment. He added:

Fortunately, no harm was done in the long run. Gomez and Blanco were able to cut the cake as planned, and the evening carried on without further pastry-related incidents (that we know of). We are all richer for Short sharing the story with us.

The hit series has already been renewed for a sixth season, and while a release date hasn’t been announced, a return sometime on the 2026 television schedule wouldn’t be surprising. The streaming wars have been in full effect for years now, and those with a Hulu subscription know that one of the best Hulu shows to watch is Only Murders in the Building. The Emmy-nominated series recently wrapped up its fifth season on the air, and I've loved enjoying how the comedy/mystery has changed over the years. But I do have one issue with Selena Gomez's performance that drives me crazy. Hear me out.

Only Murders Season 5 had some A+ characters, although obviously it's largely about its three stars: Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This trio has great chemistry, but the "Come & Get It" singer's diction on the comedy series is a bit of a distraction to me.

Sometimes I Don't Understand What Selena Gomez Is Saying

While I love seeing Gomez' Mabel poke fun at her older podcast partners in Only Murders in the Building, sometimes I have a hard time actually comprehending what her one-liners are. This is largely thanks to the singer/actress' diction when filming, especially compared to the crisp and effective way Martin Short and Steve Martin deliver their lines on the acclaimed series.

Of course, there is a legit reason why Selena Gomez is speaking this way. Her delivery as Mabel is usually very deadpan, which is an effective foil to her co-stars. But sometimes (for me personally) she borders on being impossible to understand. Does anyone else have this problem?

I didn't have this same issue with Gomez on Wizard Beyond Waverly Place, or in her catalogue of pop songs. So I ultimately think that her diction in Only Murders is a character choice. And while it bothers me a bit as a fan, that hasn't stopped Gomez from being nominated for an Emmy for her work on the comedy series. So maybe this is a me problem, rather than a common complaint that the star Emilia Perez (which is streaming with a Netflix subscription) is getting from wider audiences.

Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building has come and gone, and it looks like the show may be going abroad when it returns for a whopping sixth season on the air. The alchemy of the show is clearly working, so it's clear that Selena Gomez's diction isn't bothering that many people the same way that it messes with me when I watch. But I'm also not planning on giving up on the show. The "Hands To Myself" singer gives an excellent performance as Mabel, and I've got to blame my background in theater for being fixated on how she says her lines.

The first five seasons of Only Murders in the Building are streaming now on Hulu, with the recently completed fifth season part of the 2025 TV schedule. We'll just have to wait for news about Season 6.

With the 2025 TV schedule in full swing for the fall season, fans are discussing why they prefer Only Murders In The Building to a lot of other popular shows right now.

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, in recent years, it’s become more common to wait a lot longer between seasons of TV shows than audiences used to. This particularly makes sense because streaming services don’t have to adhere to filling the weekly and seasonal nightly blocks that channels do. As the post points out, when Only Murders In The Building Season 5 finale came out this week for those with a Hulu subscription, it marked the 50th episode from the show across four years. And as another X user brought up, Only Murders star Selena Gomez has had the time to get married and run her beauty business while also adhering to this filming schedule.

While 50 episodes in four years have been considered low some time ago, it actually feels more on pace than a lot of other hit series. As one Stranger Things fan wrote:

For the fifth year running, the talented trio heading up Only Murders in the Building managed to solve an increasingly complicated and convoluted murder, and without any further main-cast fatalities during the finale. Season 6 is now official, and it’ll take the characters across the pond for a London-centric whodunnit. That sounds fun, but it doesn’t sound very positive for my favorite thing about Season 5, which for the first time wasn’t Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez.

Okay, if we’re talking about minute-for-minute time on the screen being funny, I would probably reluctantly put Charles, Oliver and Mabel at the top. It’s impossible not to laugh at Martin and Short’s faux antagonism. But I’m throwing all the flowers and applause and handmade accolades at Nicky and Sofia Caccimelio’s five sons — Whoa! Hey! — for collectively being the biggest highlight of Season 5 in my eyes. Oh!

Season 5 Has Been Only Murders' Most Cartoonish, And The Caccimelio Bros Nail That Tone

This season bafflingly introduced an underground casino existing in the Arconia without any of the protagonists' knowledge, while also suggesting that Renée Zellweger's Camila White was able to redecorate a room in the literal blink of an eye. I thought I might bump against such a blatant lack of realism, but I'd settle for any precedent that allows for the Caccimelios to exist. To lay them all out there — Hey-o! — here's the all-star lineup:

• Dane DiLiegro (Former pro basketball player in Italy, Imaginary, Prey) as Johnny Caccimelio
• Shea Buckner (Olympian in water polo, Survive the Night) as Tony Caccimelio
• Aaron Dean Eisenberg (Power Book II: Ghost, The Iron Claw) as Braden Caccimelio
• Cory Jeacoma (Power Book II: Ghost, 4400) as Mikey Caccimelio
• Evan Mulrooney (Fargo, Dexter: Resurrection) as Vinny Caccimelio

Admittedly, I have only a passing knowledge of some of the actors, and zero knowledge of others, so I was initially surprised to see anyone but A-listers filling in guest spots, but holy meatballs, these guys! Every second they're on the screen is upper-echelon comedy, to the point where they overshadow just about everyone else's performances, albeit in small, compact doses.

These gents are "knucklehead putzes" personified, and it seems like Sofia and Nicky's DNA did not mesh together very well. It's hilarious that they just kept at it for another four attempts. The stereotypes are laid on so thick that they're a spoof-worthy bunch, and even just their background conversation din was enough to get me giggling every time, especially when balanced against everyone else's more realistic performances.

Whoa, Hey, One Of The Caccimelio Brothers Made A Big Impact Beyond The Comedy

I would have been perfectly pleased all around if Only Murders in the Building merely utilized these five actors for wholly comedic purposes. It would have worked. But thankfully, it wasn't just limited to their wildishly immature dialogue. Also thankfully, they weren't directly involved in anyone's murder.

Instead, Evan Mulrooney's Vinny hit it off with the core trio's fourth wheel Howard, and not just in an "only friends in the building" kind of a way. Their laundromat flirting seemingly blossomed into a full-blown romance, as shown during the "Three Months Later" epilogue before the Season 6 mystery reared its curly red head.

Even if it doesn't last, at least Howard has a legitimate method to take himself far beyond the point in life where he lovingly lusted after a robot doorman. Plus, this is a better love story than Mabel and Jay's doomed tryst.

But I hope it DOES last, since dating Howard would almost definitely mean VInny would be back on Only Murders on a regular basis. Granted, that wouldn't necessitate all the siblings coming back, but don't break up my guys! Come on! My guys!

So despite feeling a bit more wary than usual about enjoying a new season at the Arconia, I couldn't be more appreciative for this quintet of innocent dummies. I dunno if I could deal with a whole spinoff based on these guys, but maybe a series of post-credits sequences. For now, Season 6 or bust!

It was ladies’ night on the latest episode of Only Murders in the Building’s fifth season, and the cast in attendance was full of A-listers. From Selena Gomez to Meryl Streep to Renée Zellweger to Da’Vine Joy Randolph to Dianne Wiest, it was an absolutely stacked. However, the iconic names attached to this episode don’t end there. Jennifer Aniston’s name was also dropped twice by Streep’s character, Loretta, and I had to ask the co-creator about those jokes and the chance that the Friends icon could be on OMITB someday.

How Jennifer Aniston Was Name Dropped In Only Murders In The Building

So, here’s what went down in the episode that just aired on the 2025 TV schedule: before Meryl Streep’s Loretta put on her fake accent and attempted to get a confession out of Renée Zellweger’s billionaire, Camila, she had to talk to Jennifer Aniston about doing her show first. It was for an important role too, as Loretta squealed the following right as she walked into the event:

Later in the episode, Loretta is the one to get a major crack in the case, as she learned the history between Nicky and Camila as well as their plans for the casino at the Arconia. Oh, and she found what looks like the murder weapon.

However, despite all that, when Oliver complimented her crime-solving skills and said he had “no notes” about what she'd figured out and learned, Loretta quipped back:

It was a hilarious callback to a joke from earlier in the episode, and it got me thinking: Could Jennifer Aniston ever be on this great Hulu show?

What The Co-Creator Of Only Murders In The Building Said About The Jennifer Aniston Joke And The Potential For Her To Be On The Show

When I interviewed Only Murders’ co-creator John Hoffman, I made sure to talk to him about this funny scene, and I asked if we should read into it and if it’d ever be possible to have Aniston on the comedy. In response, he started laughing and joked about the potential for his series to crossover with The Morning Show before breaking down the actual bit in OMITB. He explained:

Truly, it’s an A+ joke, because it's wild to think about Loretta trying to cast an A-lister in her medical procedural that shoots in New Zealand.

Now, I really hope it inspires the series and Aniston to work together. It sounds like Hoffman isn’t opposed to the idea either, as he told me:

Since she was name-dropped in the episode, maybe she could play herself like Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria did last season. Or maybe, in the same vein as Paul Rudd’s ongoing gag of returning as a new character every season, this whole ordeal of Loretta trying to recruit her for her show could continue as a running inside joke. Then, maybe, someday, Jennifer Aniston could actually show up to interact with Meryl Streep’s character.

For now, that’s just a dream. However, considering Hoffman’s enthusiasm about the joke and the absolutely stacked list of guest stars Only Murders has had, I don’t actually think it’s that far-fetched. So, as we continue watching the lovely Hulu comedy on Tuesdays, let’s hope that someday Jennifer Aniston really does show up to talk to Loretta about a role in Burn Unit.

However, this week, we got an extra special moment, because Episode 7 of Season 5 featured one of the co-creator's favorite scenes between Steve Martin and Selena Gomez.

A large portion of this episode is based around the billionaires’ game night that Oliver, Mabel and Charles crash. There's a big scene in the episode involving a game of Celebrity, and it’s hilarious because while Logan Lerman’s Jay, Renée Zellweger’s Camila and Christoph Waltz’s Bash kill the game, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez’s characters struggle, big time...at first.

That idea of watching these characters play a simple game delighted co-creator John Hoffman, as he told me during an interview for CinemaBlend:

Hoffman continued to explain that at parties, when you play games like this, “all the guards drop,” and you get to see a new side of a person. That was certainly true for the billionaires, but it was also true for Mabel and Charles, as the co-creator explained:

We also got to learn a lot of random information this way. The game revealed Vladimir Putin bakes an upside-down pineapple cake for Bash’s Labor Day party, Kim Jong Un won’t “shut up about Crumbl cookies,” and that Camila and Xi Jinping call each other Bunny Face and the reason is “just for us,” among other things. Hoffman got a real kick out of all that, as we got to see “those characters loosening up.”

However, as stated earlier, seeing Martin and Gomez play the game was one of his favorite scenes. And I’d have to agree, seeing them panic over the Broadway category and then using Oliver’s ridiculous stories to get the answers was absolutely hilarious, as Hoffman told me:

They really were super loose in that scene! I mean, at the end, Steve Martin jumped in celebration, and Selena Gomez threw the cards up. It was also hilarious to see them recall Martin Short’s character’s wild stories and claims – like he invented both the names Adele Dazeem and Idina Menzel.

Honestly, this scene falls up there with Season 5 highlights that include the return of Paul Rudd’s ongoing gag, any scene between Oliver and Loretta, and the few scenes we’ve gotten between Mabel and Jay that have enemies-to-lovers vibes. It was so fun to see Martin and Gomez let loose and get so passionate, and it was even more fun to see them recall all of Oliver’s wild stories.

So, I agree with Hoffman’s assessment of this sequence; I think it’s one of my favorites, too, and you can go back and watch it on Hulu.

Paul Rudd’s characters on Only Murders in the Building might die, but at this point, we can almost always count on the actor returning in some way, shape or form. This season, he came back to voice the Arconia’s robot doorman L.E.S.T.R. So, while he can’t be seen in the season airing on the 2025 TV schedule, he can be heard. However, before the team landed on that idea, they floated a bunch of other ways for the actor to make his way back into the building, and co-creator John Hoffman told me about one of the wilder ideas they had.

Now, working Rudd into Season 5 of Only Murders was no easy task. Hoffman told me that “every time” they talked about it, it’d result in him saying “No, we can’t do that. We’re going to kill the show. We’re jumping the shark. It’s not going to happen.” However, that didn’t stop them from thinking up silly ideas, and the co-creator shared one of those with me. He explained:

For a bit of context, Christoph Waltz plays the billionaire Bash Steed, whose age is a mystery and whose methods of being ageless are unknown and for sure creepy. So, it’d track that he’d go to great (and silly) lengths to maintain a look that makes it seem like he could be immortal.

Considering Paul Rudd is ageless, having him return as his original Only Murders character from Season 3, Ben Glenroy, would have been hilarious. It would have been a meta commentary on the discourse surrounding his age, and it would be a funny way to incorporate him back into the show.

However, ultimately, that was a no-go, as Hoffman told me:

You know, I get it. They need to keep the story on the murders of Lester and Nicky, and this could have been a distracting subplot. However, I still would have loved to see it. Thankfully, though, they did ultimately work Rudd into the show in a hilarious, fitting and natural way that also managed to pay homage to his other appearances on the Hulu hit.

They paid homage, of course, by killing Rudd’s character again. In Season 3, Ben Glenroy was the murder victim of the season. In Season 4, his stunt double Glen Stubbins died. And in Season 5, L.E.S.T.R. was thrown off a building, effectively being killed. However, a new robot was quickly brought on, meaning Rudd was back…again.

While I adore this entire plot point and can’t wait to see Rudd’s robot on the show, I can’t help but fantasize about the wild idea the show’s creator told me about. However, if I’ve learned anything from Paul Rudd and this show, he will come back, and maybe next time it will be as Ben Glenroy, who is set on explaining his key to being ageless.

Now that we’re on Season 5 of Only Murders In The Building, I’m actually rather shocked at the lack of romance we’ve seen in the comedy starring Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin. It’s kind of refreshing that the only big couple to write home about is the recent marriage between Short and Meryl Streep’s characters (the actors are rumored to be an item in real life), but now that Logan Lerman’s character made his first appearance on the series, the potential for a new romance for Gomez’s Mabel has stirred up a lot of thoughts about the show from me.

Lerman has been established as Jay Pflug, who is one of three billionaires the Only Murders podcasters/mystery-solvers come across as they try to solve the potential murder of the Arconia’s Lester Coluca. He’s the heir of a pharmaceutical magnate and happens to be around the same age as Mabel. In Episode 4, they strike up a meaningful conversation that had Charles and Oliver saying that he makes her “eyes flutter.” So, what’s being set up exactly?

I (And Other Fans) Do Sense Some Flirtation Between Mabel And Jay On Season 5

While I could be absolutely wrong, I do detect Only Murders In The Building is trying to set up a little flirtation and potential love interest territory between Mabel and Jay. Particularly, one where one of the possible villain and our hero could get into a classic enemies-to-lovers scenario. The romance trope is personally one of my favorites, found in the likes of Pride & Prejudice, Bridgerton, La La Land and The Sound of Music, and hasn’t necessarily played out on the show yet. These two are just too easy to want to see together, and lots of fans are rooting for it to happen, and we’ve only seen a taste of these two actors playing off the other, with half the season having aired so far.

I Actually Love The Idea Of Mabel's Guard Going Down For A Villainous Billionnaire

Shortly after Jay impressed Mabel during the unexpected billionaire “dinner” party in Episode 4, we learn that Jay used the information they talked about to trap her, Charles and Oliver in a new deal where they cannot talk about him or the other billionaires on their podcast. Mabel is flustered and angered that he took advantage of a sweet moment between them, but that goes to show that his charm went far. Mabel's skills are usually sharp, and she’s always paying attention to who could be suspects, and how they could be tricking her. But, in the case of Jay, she was quick to write him off, probably because she has a little crush.

Being attractive and knowing how to use it to gain power is a dangerous game that I think that Jay is playing, but if Mabel falls for it, it’d mean she’s only human. There've been a lot of unexpected villains throughout the series, but a case being difficult to crack because a character like Jay knows how to use his magnetism to get away with things is an interesting plotline for Only Murders to explore. And, it'd be even better if it ends with Jay actually being one of the good ones, and the pair fall in love. Mabel has always been an unexpected character, and as long as he’s not actually a murderer, I’d kind of love this for her.

It'd Sort Of Be The Best, Since Selena Gomez Once Said He Was Her Celebrity Crush

One big reason why Mabel and Jay’s possible romance is also so interesting to the internet comes from their history. Long ago, Gomez said that Lerman was her celebrity crush (via X), and it became so viral that the actor was asked about it during a press junket. He was flattered, and Gomez sweetly took back her answer to get the attention off the pair of actors being a couple everyone wanted to see. Over a decade later, the pair have had the chance to work together for the first time, and should they become an on-screen couple, it's kind of a sweet full circle moment. Plus, nowadays, Gomez is engaged to Benny Blanco and Lerman is engaged himself.

I Have A Larger Problem With Mabel's Romantic Storylines That I Hope The Show Can Start To Rectify

The conversation about Mabel and her love life brings me to a larger issue I’ve had with how her character has been handled in relation to meeting a love interest. Across the show so far, Mabel has had a few love interests, with Oscar Torres in Season 1, Alice Banks in Season 2 (played by one of her best friends Cara Delevingne) and Jesse Williams’ Tobert. I totally get why the writers have chosen not to make any of them stick. The focus is more on Mabel’s friendship with Charles and Oliver, and her own personal self growth journey, but it’s getting kind of tiring to see them each last season, and for her to be stuck in the same one-season romance loop.

It doesn’t allow Mabel to really grow as a character if she’s interested in a romance/partner-in-crime outside of her sweet friendship with Charles and Oliver, but she’s never able to juggle her mystery-solving life and finding the happiness she’s looking for, it ends up being a let down if we don't get to see her explore relationships beyond the surface.

While I don’t necessarily expect Jay to be the character to break the spell, the arrival of another love interest has me thinking about a circular pattern on the mystery. I hope it doesn't stay stagnant until whenever they decide to end the show. In other words, if you’re going to give Mabel another love interest, really commit to a good romantic plotline, because they’ve been so thin and forgettable thus far.

Warning: SPOILERS for the Only Murders in the Building episode “Tongue Tied” are ahead!

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 is halfway into its run on the 2025 TV schedule, and another character has bitten the dust. This time, though, it was hilarious, because L.E.S.T.R., the robot voiced by Paul Rudd, was thrown off the building in “Tongue Tied” by a disgruntled member of the Arcadia’s staff. Only Murders showrunner John Hoffman explained why it was a “no-brainer” to kill off L.E.S.T.R., and I’m entirely in agreement with his simple, yet logical reason.

This is the third character Rudd has played on Only Murders in the Building, having previously appeared as Ben Glenroy in the Season 2 finale and Season 3, and then as Glen Stubbins in Season 4. With two of his characters having died under unfortunate circumstances, it only made sense for Hoffman and the rest of the Hulu subscription-exclusive show’s creative team to do the same to L.E.S.T.R.. As the showrunner told TVLine:

I’m sorry, but a precedent has been set on Only Murders in the Building, so L.E.S.T.R. absolutely needed to go. It’s just a shame it happened only a week after we met it, as the robot was brought in during “Dirty Birds” to handle duties like deliveries and reminders. The only reason L.E.S.T.R. didn’t take over as the full time Arconia doorman is that Randall, the late Lester Coluca’s successor, was protected by his union, but by the time “Tongue Tied” rolled around, he and the other staff members had grown to hate the robot.

It was warranted, as many of the residents had grown to favor the robot over the humans working in the Arconia. In an attempt to make nice with the staff as they looked for clues pertaining to Lester and Nicky Caccimelio’s murders, Oliver and Mabel held a building meeting to try and resolve the growing divide between the two sides. Well, it didn’t take long for the meeting to devolve into chaos, during which time Miller the garbage man stole L.E.S.T.R. and threw it off the building.

Howard, who had been acting as L.E.S.T.R.’s keeper and called the robot his “best friend” now that his dog and cat had third-wheeled him, was shaken by that turn of events, though not for long since another robot was on its way and already connected to his Gmail. Really, the only downside of L.E.S.T.R.’s destruction was that it contained digital copies of Lester’s paperwork, which Oliver, Mabel and Charles had been hoping to use to further their investigation.

Who knows, maybe the next L.E.S.T.R. robot, which I hope is also voiced by Paul Rudd, will have those copies if they were backed up on the cloud. And at least some good came out of L.E.S.T.R. being destroyed, as Miller later gave our trio of main characters a portrait of Lester Coluca made out of the garbage from the day he died, as they’d requested. From there, they learned about an address and arrived there just in time to see Lorraine, Lester’s wife, meeting with Sofia, Nicky’s wife. We’ll learn what’s going on with that when Only Murders in the Building Season 5’s sixth episode premieres next Tuesday.

TV characters may often lead more exciting lives than the average person, but they're just as susceptible as anyone to relaxing on the couch while watching their own televisions. Most of the time, those shows-within-shows are completely fictional, as not to cause any copyright friction, which can lead to some hilariously weird and inspired creations.

So, in the vein of fake bands we love listening to, fictional brandings we love promoting, and commercials for faux products, let's now celebrate fake TV shows that might just be as watchable as the real ones.

Married...With Children - "Psycho Dad"

Perhaps Al Bundy's favorite TV show, the "simple saga of a guy run amok in the Old West" was somehow a PBS series (and then a Fox one), despite being one of the most violent shows on TV, which the theme song alludes to. Didn't stop the spinoff Psycho Mom from happening, though.

Gravity Falls - "Duck-tective"

If it walks like a duck and solves mysteries like a detective, it can only be Gravity Falls' fine-feathered sleuth Duck-tective, who heads up the titular mystery series that relies heavily on bad puns and cheap effects, like so many shows of the '80s and '90s.

Community - "Inspector Spacetime"

Despite Community's Abed having once worn a Doctor Who T-shirt, his preferred sci-fi time-travel saga is Inspector Spacetime, a very on-the-nose homage to the long-running UK fave. (The American version introduced years later was portrayed by Luke Perry.) I'd wager I.S. has more canonical backstory than almost any other show-within-a-show, with lots of background for fans, real and otherwise, to dig into.

South Park - "The Terrance And Phillip Show"

Two of the biggest celebrities within South Park that aren't parodies of real-world celebs are Sir Phillip Niles Argyle and Sir Terrance Henry Stoot, best known to the Canadian comedy lovers as Terrance and Phillip, who have their own TV show that's a real gas...gas...gasssss.

Extras - "When The Whistle Blows"

One of the funniest things about Ricky Gervais satirizing BBC sitcoms in HBO's Extras is how little it feels like a parody, and how believable it would be as a real-world series with its lowest-common-denominator jokes, forever cementing "Are you 'avin' a laugh?" into the annals of love-to-hate TV catchphrases.

Saturday Night Live - "TV Funhouse"

Saturday Night Live has featured loads of fake movie trailers, songs, TV shows, etc., but perhaps the only applicable recurring sketch to get spun off with its own shows-within-a-show concept was "TV Funhouse," as created by Robert Smigel. Later a standalone series on Comedy Central, the OG run gave the world the Ambiguously Gay Duo, "Bambi 2002," and other SNL classics from the '90s and 2000s.

The Big Bang Theory - "Professor Proton"

I'd have to imagine Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper would have loved Mr. Wizard's World or Beakman's World if he were real, as his favorite small-screen personality was the science educator Professor Proton (real name: Arthur Jeffries). For viewers, Proton's excellence was naturally due to comedy legend Bob Newhart being cast. And you can't forget his puppet pal Gino the Neutrino, even if it's best not to bring up the puppeteer.

Parks And Recreation - "The Johnny Karate Super Awesome Musical Explosion Show"

Chris Pratt's Andy Dwyer brought Johnny Karate to life initially as a guitar-playing act for children's birthday parties, but that just wasn't musical or explosive enough, so of course he got his own inspirational TV show. Johnny may have been a doofus, but alter-alter ego Jonathan Karate is the one who has it all together.

Rocko's Modern LIfe - "Meet The Fatheads"

Within Rocko's Modern Life, the Bigheads' lives were fictionalized as The Fatheads, a family sitcom centered on pretty awful and stereotypical characters. Amusingly enough, the revival special Static Cling also featured the in-universe revival of The Fatheads, which not everyone was a fan of.

Home Improvement - "Tool Time"

One of TV's ultimate "How-Not-To" characters, Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor somehow kept his job hosting the Detroit-set series "Tool Time," despite being shockingly consistent at destroying property and electrical equipment with ease. It's just as shocking that co-host Al Borland didn't quit or suffer grave injuries during that run.

Only Murders In The Building - "Brazzos"

No one remembers the detective series "Brazzos" as well as Only Murders in the Building's Charles-Haden Savage, the actor who donned the iconic hat for its surprisingly long run. (Okay, perhaps his loyal stunt double Sazz remembered it just as fondly.) But who else could have spun these banal words into an oft-ish-repeated catchphrase: "This sends the investigation into a whole new direction." So many new directions for this guy.

Rugrats - "Oodles The Talking Poodle"

As an avid Rugrats fan during the NickToons era, it's been 30+ years since I've been able to hear the world "poodle" without hearing a light "ding" behind it, as it goes in the talking dog's theme song. "OOdles. OOdles the TALking POOdle. Ding." How is this not a movie by now?

Stargate SG-1 - "Wormhole X-Treme"

While Stargate SG-1 didn't always show off its funny bone so directly, the self-spoofing 100th episode "Wormhole X-Treme," which focuses on the action-geared sci-fi series that provided the ep's title. I wish every show I love had a parody as faithful and fan-friendly as this one.

The Simpsons - "The Krusty The Clown Show"

If not for Krusty the Clown's quality-questionable variety show, Bart, Lisa and Simpsons fans around the world might never have been introduced to the hyperviolent "Itchy and Scratchy Show," which superceded its own source clown's popularity, with former sidekick Sideshow Bob amassing more notoriety.

Murderbot - "The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon"

It's easy to see why Alexander Skarsgård's sentient SecUnit just wants to spend all day, all 397 (at least) episodes of the sudsy space opera "The Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon." With legit talents like John Cho, Clark Gregg and DeWanda Wise heading up the How to Get Away with Murder-esque series, this is easily worthy of a standalone spinoff to keep viewers rapt.

Young Justice - "Hello, Megan!"

Who knew superheroes would get into such normalcy as the sitcom "Hello, Megan!" A by-the-books sitcom from 1979-1980, the show follows a pretty cheerleader, her BFF, hunky boyfriend, and parents, and not even for large-scale adventures, but just everyday plots like taking care of the school frog. Okay, fine, I completely understand why everyone is obsessed.

Channel Zero - "Candle Cove"

The worst kind of TV show, I think we can all agree, is one that inevitably brings you harm just by watching it. So it goes for the first season of the excellent horror anthology Channel Zero, where "Candle Cove" is a pirate-based puppet show that may only exist in the minds of its viewers. Watch out for The Skin-Taker, that's all I'm saying.

Steven Universe - Crying Breakfast Friends

If you don't know the value of watching "Crying Breakfast Friends," then I don't suggest mentioning it to Steven Universe's titular crystal being. He adores watching the various food items, leaking both tears of joy and tears of sorrow. Glum Glass and Weeping Egg Cup are all of us, really.

Supernatural - "Ghostfacers"

Supernatural, a show that legitimately crossed over with the animated Scooby-Doo gang, brought an equally silly spin to the never-ending number of paranormal investigator series that took over cable in the 21st century. Founded by the Ghostbusters-homaging Harry Spangler and Ed Zeddmore, the Ghostfacers appeared quite a few times over the years, and even sparked a web series of shorts.

BoJack Horseman - "Horsin' Around"

For as dramatically serious and maudlin as BoJack Horseman could get, none of that was to be found in the cornball hijinks of the in-series sitcom "Horsin' Around," centering on three kids adopted by a horse, obviously. It fights right alongside fare like Punky Brewster, with a slew of wonderfully groan-worthy lines perhaps best exemplified by the pun "Now, that's a horse of a different...crueller."

Twin Peaks - "Invitation To Love"

Oh, to explore around inside David Lynch's brain to see all of the things he might have been thinking about for the expertly crafted soap opera "Invitation to Love," which was a favorite amongst some of the characters inhabiting Twin Peaks' titular town. The fact that the storylines reference the characters' lives only makes it more interesting.

Seinfeld - "Jerry"

While Seinfeld's show-within-a-show "Jerry" really only existed as a pilot and not as a fully ordered network-aired series, given the actions of its characters, its ridiculous plot is enough to make it one of the more memorable faux TV series out there. Jerry gets into a car accident, and the other insurance-less driver has to become Jerry's butler, making "Because he's MY butler" one of the more logically accurate fake TV catchphrases.

Family Guy - "Jolly Farm Revue"

With an aesthetic that mashed up the Teletubbies with other pastoral children's fare, Family Guy's faux UK series "Jolly Farm Revue" became an obsession of Stewie's, as he believed its characters actually existed, only to find them to be less real than his teddy bear Rupert. I prefer the American remake with that li'l cutie Karina Smirnoff.

Arrested Development - "Mock Trial With J. Reinhold"

Arrested Development's melting pot of humor is well-exemplified by Michael Bluth having a legal case heard as part of a courtroom reality show fronted by Judge Reinhold (who definitely isn't a real judge), with a theme song sung live on-set by William Hung and a backing band. Should this have turned into an actual series? "I'm going to allow it," even if it pretty much rips on a gag from Clerks: the Animated Series.

SpongeBob SquarePants - "Mermaid Man And Barnacle Boy"

Not only was the superhero series "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy" a fun show-within-a-show for SpongeBob SquarePants' characters, but the titular characters were a treat outside of their televised exploits as well. For one, they were originally voiced by legends Ernest Bornine and Tim Conway, and later boasted '60s Batman icons Adam West and Burt Ward in the respective hero and sidekick roles at one point or another.

30 Rock - "MILF Island"

A fake TV show that will likely exist before this sentence is finished, 30 Rock's reality TV-aping romance competition MILF Island was sold with the disturbing tagline "25 Super-Hot Moms, 50 Eighth Grade Boys, No Rules." Okay, maybe we should just keep this one hidden behind a locked door back in 2008.

Lost - "Exposé"

Lost's storylines didn't just flash backwards, forwards and sideways. They also went internal for the show-within-a-show Exposé, a '70s-esque action-adventure series in which Kiele Sanchez's Nikki was guest-starring. (With Billy Dee Williams as the lead of the faux show.) We see just enough to make me want more, although that would never happen, as audiences' dislike of Nikki and Rodrigo Santoro's Paolo was strong enough to get them killed off during the same season in which they were introduced.

DuckTales - "Ottoman Empire"

A TV parody that is too close to the real thing to be entirely comedic, DuckTales' "Ottoman Empire" centers on two twin rooster brothers, Johnny and Randy, who design custom ottomans for customers. It's like Property Brothers with a punnier title, and you know, roosters.

Drake And Josh - "Drew And Jerry"

Drake & Josh entered sitcom doppelgänger territory in Season 2 when Drake Bell and Josh Peck's namesake characters took a friendly break from each other, only to befriend someone else with the exact same personality. By the end, the titular teens were buds again, while their "others" were somehow given their own TV show that looks exactly like D&J. Presumably with its own Season 2 doppelgänger plot.

My Name Is Earl - "Estrada Or Nada"

We're at a point where real-life game shows are about as ridiculous as anything fictional, but My Name Is Earl's "Estrada or Nada" is still pretty special. Basically, anyone can challenge the CHiPs star to any imaginable challenge, from shooting basketballs to eating hot dogs to looking like Erik Estrada.

Futurama - "Everybody Loves Hynotoad"

I love Hypnotoad. You love Hypnotoad. Everybody loves Hypnotoad. Everybody loves Hypnotoad. Good show.

Garfield & Friends - "The Binky Show"

Hey, kids! No fake TV clown seemed quite as intent on waking everyone in the hosue up as Garfield & Friends' Binky the Clown, whose show seemed to be on at literally all hours. Because it was of such high production value, I can only assume.

Every streaming service has a handful of megahits, and Only Murders in the Building is definitely one of Hulu's best shows to binge watch. The Emmy-nominated series recently returned for a new season for those with a Hulu subscription, and Season 5 has already been lots of fun. But, did the show just drop the movie storyline featuring Eva Longoria?

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 has been a fun ride so far, with the big mystery surrounding the death of Arconia doorman Lester Coluca. While the season picks up immediately after the Season 4 finale, we've only gotten a reference or two to the fictional movie based off of the fictional podcast. Are we expected to believe it's all going on without a hitch in the midst of yet another murder?

Did Only Murders Just Drop The Movie Plot?

While Season 3 of Only Murders focused on the world of Broadway, the fourth season took the trio of leading characters straight to Hollywood. That's where we learned our heroes were going to be played by Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, and Zach Galifianakis, with those actors hilariously playing fictionalized versions of themselves. This was a great running bit throughout Season 4, especially when factoring in Molly Shannon's character, Bev Melon, as the producer.

Unfortunately, the first few episodes of Only Murders in the Building Season 5 didn't really address the ongoing questions about that movie. While Mabel mentions it to Beanie Feldstein's Althea, that's basically the only moment it was acknowledged. Instead our trio of heroes have been primarily focused on finding out who killed Lester. Obviously that's the main objective of the new batch of episodes, but I'd like a little more connective tissue with last season, since there's no time jump.

While I'd love to see Longoria return as herself alongside Levy and Galifianakis, I understand that Only Murders probably doesn't have an unlimited budget with its guest stars. I'd settle for seeing the billboards or simply more references to what's happening with the movie that took up so much narrative real estate last season. Is that project actually going to make it to theaters, therefore turning our trio of heroes into household names? Or could it end up being scrapped? Either way I need a nice bow tied onto this particular plot line.

There's been no indication we're going to see those special guest stars, although fans are expecting familiar faces like Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd to have a role in Season 5. Maybe the return of Streep's Loretta Durkin will offer a much needed update about the fictional movie.

Only Murders in the Building airs new episodes Tuesdays on Hulu as part of the 2025 TV schedule. The mystery/comedy is known for its plot twists, so it feels like just about anything could happen in the future.

Paul Rudd probably isn’t the first name who comes to mind when thinking about Only Murders in the Building, but the Hulu subscription-exclusive series has certainly gone out of its way to keep him included. First he played Ben Glenroy in the Season 2 finale and throughout Season 3, then he returned in Season 4 to play Glen Stubbins, Ben’s stunt double. While we haven’t seen Rudd’s face yet during Only Murders Season 5, not to worry, as this amazing gag continues on thanks to the latest episode to premiere on the 2025 TV schedule.

Although Randall is staying on to succeed the late Lester Coluca as the Arconia, “Dirty Birds” brought in some help in the form of the Logic-Engineered Secure Tenant Robot, or L.E.S.T.R. The robot is voiced by none other than Paul Rudd, as showrunner John Hoffman confirmed to TVLine. He went on to explain how it wasn’t the “original intention” to have Rudd voice L.E.S.T.R., but it eventually became clear that they wouldn’t be able to effectively squeeze an on-camera role for the him in Season 5 of one of the funniest shows on Hulu. Hoffman continued:

As the self-described “keeper of the building’s secrets,” Howard Morris was tasked by the Arcadia’s board with training L.E.S.T.R. to handle duties like deliveries or reminders. Randall’s job was thankfully protected by his union, but the robot’s presence is already bothering our main trio of characters. Later on in “Dirty Birds” L.E.S.T.R. spouts off impressive statistics about Althea/“Thē” and not-so-impressive statistics about the Only Murders podcast, much to Mabel and Oliver’s dismay.

Yet what’s an annoyance to them is a delight to Only Murders in the Building viewers. John Hoffman added that we’ll continue to hear Paul Rudd voicing L.E.S.T.R. for the rest of Season 5, and he got a kick out of the way the Ant-Man actor delivered his lines:

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume that L.E.S.T.R. will somehow factor into Mabel, Oliver and Charles solving the murders of both Lester and Nicky Caccimelio, for better or worse. I’m just glad the Only Murders team found a way to once again fit Paul Rudd into these mystery-solving antics, as unorthodox as it may be. As far as on-camera talent goes, the lineup of new guest stars this season has included Bobby Cannavale, Jermaine Fowler, Beanie Feldstein, Renée Zellweger, Christoph Waltz, Logan Lerman, Téa Leoni, Keegan Michael-Key and even Tony Plana from The Three Amigos.

New episodes of Only Murders in the Building premiere Tuesdays on Hulu. It remains to be seen if Season 6 will happen, but assuming it does, I look forward to seeing how the show makes use of Paul Rudd again… because this gag must continue.

Only Murders in the Building is new on streaming this week, with the first three episodes of Season 5 premiering, which means we get to see the hilarious Steve Martin and Martin Short spar with Selena Gomez as they solve another murder in their swanky apartment building. At this point, they are an iconic pop culture trio, but it’s safe to say the TV show wouldn’t exist without another great trio: the Three Amigos. And, in the newest season, there’s a little nod to the 1986 movie that started it all for Martin and Short.

What's The Three Amigos Reunion In Only Murders In The Building Season 5?

Three Amigos was Steve Martin and Martin Short’s first starring roles together, which would lead to decades of continued collaborations on the Father of the Bride movies, touring together and of course their roles on one of the funniest shows on Hulu that we never want to see end, Only Murders in the Building. In the second episode of Season 5, one of their main co-stars from the ‘80s comedy debuted a role on the series! Tony Plana, who famously played the role of Jefe, portrays the previous doorman in The Arconia, George.

While we won’t go too into specifics about the episode in case you haven’t seen it yet, the episode titled “After You,” and viewers get to visit the past of the Arconia when Lester was getting his start as the doorman. It gives more background on the mystery this season as Charles, Oliver and Mabel try to solve Lester’s murder.

How Tony Plana Was Cast In The Hulu Hit Alongside Steve Martin And Martin Short

When Only Murders co-creator John Hoffman spoke to Deadline about casting Plana, he shared how it came together. In his words:

Short and Martin also had a lot to gush over reuniting with Plana for their Hulu show. Short exclaimed that they “love Tony,” and Martin called the actor an “essential element of Three Amigos” before revealing that he was “very sentimental” about getting to work with them again to play George. Here’s what Plana said himself about getting the role:

In the interview, Plana, who’s also famous for Ugly Betty and a host of roles across five decades, said having the Three Amigos reunion was “big hugs all around,” calling Martin and Short “incredibly welcoming and a lot of fun.” Only Murders has often been called the “most fun set to be on” by all who find themselves on the show, so we’re not surprised Plana had a blast.

Spoilers below for anyone who hasn’t yet watched the first episode of Only Murders in the Building via Hulu subscription, so be warned!

One of TV’s deadliest structures is back to take more victims, as Only Murders in the Building has graced the 2025 premiere schedule with its Season 5 return. Understandably, it kicks off soon after the events of the Season 4 finale, in which the newest on-site victim was identified to be the beloved doorman Lester, and raised those stakes even higher by revealing a second dead body in the fifth season’s premiere. And you just know everything is connected.

For all the fun that I had watching Téa Leoni join the fun as Sofia Caccimelio while catching back up with the core trio, the latter characters stumbled upon their newest groundbreaking mystery in ways that truly bothered me from a narrative perspective. In fact, I think one of those instances exemplifies possibly the worst storytelling sin that can happen in a murder-mystery.

OMITB's Biggest Murder-Mystery Storytelling Sin: Oliver's Dry Cleaner Scene

With a fairly complex beginning stage set for our central podcasters to kick off their investigation, the premiere ends with a fairly predictable shocker for a show like this: the missing husband that Leoni's character wanted the trio to track down wound up being the second corpse. Bobby Cannavale's Nicky Caccimelio was revealed to already be dead the first time we fully see him in person, with his death no doubt connected to Lester's.

But how did Nicky's body get discovered? Was it the result of stringent and unwavering detective work? No. Was it the result of hours of intense stakeouts and scouring over hours of security footage? Mabel did watch lots of such footage, but that also had nothing to do with it.

Instead, the body was found because Oliver attempted to get Lester's hat dry cleaning after hours, and instead of either finding a new dry cleaner's or making a plan to return in the morning, Oliver instead tries the door, finds it's unlocked, and then waltzes inside. Then, instead of leaving the hat on the counter with a polite note and some money, Oliver takes it upon himself to turn all the machinery on so that he can see the rest of Lester's uniform. It seems like he should have been able to just walk up and grab it after seeing the jacket, but he still uses the conveyor.

One of the biggest faux pas that any kind of mystery can make is relying on pure coincidences and baffling character behavior to push the plot forward, and Oliver's actions in the Season 5 premiere align entirely with those forced story beats. If this show took place in the '70s or '80s, I could more easily buy into a neurotic character randomly entering a closed business and futzing with equipment without either getting shot or setting off any alarms.

To clarify, I'm sure there's a perfectly fine plot-related explanation for why Nicky's body was hung up in his family's business like that, and for why the front door seemed to suddenly unlock when Oliver was standing in front of it, and that those reveals are coming in later episodes. But no explanations could possibly justify Oliver's legitimately criminal decision to not-quite-break into a business for personal reasons. I get that he's an unpredictable loon, but impulse-driven coincidences are not a good foundation for a murder-mystery where detailed minutiae is key.

I'm Also Not In Love With Another Big Reveal Being Tied The Arconia's Secret Architecture

As someone who adores escape rooms, I love that Only Murders in the Building can occasionally scratch that same puzzle-minded itch with its twisty plotting. And the premiere dropped a doozy of a reveal by having Charles and Mabel discover that a full-on casino exists below the Arconia, thanks in part to a super-special card deck that boasts a magnetic card with a secret map on it. Because sure, why wouldn't such a card exist?

That said, this reveal also felt wildly coincidental and unnatural within the scheme of things. Sofia giving Charles the deck as a "clue" was extremely baffling, and had Charles chosen to examine the cards while drinking anything but wine, he probably wouldn't have ever realized the map existed. Or if he hadn't been near anything magnetic, he may not have even realized that one card was special.

But sure, I can buy into each of those things happening, since it's TV. However, if the stairway down to the casino was merely hidden in one of the lobby floor's custodial closets, why did anyone need a secret map to figure that out? It could have just said "Broom Closet Near Elevators." Even then, though, I'm questioning why anyone in possession of the key would even need that reminder of where the casino is, considering there aren't many steps required to find it.

I think my biggest issue with this reveal, however, is that it's not the first time Only Murders has pinned a mystery on the Arconia having secret areas that the main characters weren't privy to, despite two of them living there for eons. (I'm referring here to the behind-the-walls tunnels that Jan utilized in Season 1.) As much as I like the idea of a clandestine casino, I don't want this show to already become a parody of itself by just rehashing ideas.

On the one hand, I totally get it, since there are only so many ways to make an apartment complex continue to justify its titular placement this many years into a show's existence. But on the other hand, if the creative team is going to continue requiring viewers to suspend the disbelief with each new season introducing more and more murders happening around Charles, Oliver and Mabel, then they should be able to tell those stories without retreading ground and eschewing logic all at once.

Perhaps we'll learn later in the season from new cast member Keegan-Michael Key that Oliver was diagnosed with a syndrome when he was young that makes him unable to not walk into businesses after closing. But I doubt it.

The first three episodes of Only Murders in the Building Season 5 are available now with a Hulu subscription, meaning it’s time for Charles, Oliver and Mabel to solve another murder. It also means that more guests will be gracing the Aronia. The Only Murders cast is famous for being stacked each season, whether an actor is recurring or just briefly appearing. Keegan-Michael Key is one of the newbies for the fifth season, and he’s gushing about joining the show.

The Key and Peele alum's recurring status in the show was announced earlier this year, but details about his character were being kept under wraps. However, the Season 5 premiere, which dropped on Tuesday, revealed that Key is playing Mayor Tillman, who only shows up to Lester the doorman’s funeral to lock in more voters. Tillman even goes on the main trio’s podcast because of their wide fanbase. Key opened up to People about being on the Hulu hit and could not praise it enough:

Only Murders is arguably one of the funniest shows on Hulu right now, and fans have also seen the humorous antics that occur off camera, thanks to BTS content from the stars. Still, everyone is also professional, and it's great to hear from a newcomer just how smoothly things run. This is far from the first time the show has been lauded for its on-set environment, as Steve Martin praised the show for the same reason.

It's unclear how many episodes Keegan-Michael Key filmed for Only Murders, but it sounds like his experience was memorable. Considering the good reputation the show has, it’s not surprising that it locks down so many guest stars each season.

Key’s turn as the mayor has already proven to be funny, and I'm excited to see what else we learn about Tillman in the episodes to come. And, as previously alluded to, Key is just one of many guest stars for Season 5, as Christoph Waltz, Beanie Feldstein, Logan Lerman, Renée Zellweger are more are also set to drop in. Most of their roles have been kept under wraps, but now that the new season has premiered, it won’t be long until fans find out which characters they’re playing.

As for the premise of Season 5, the new episodes pick up in the aftermath of the Season 4 finale, which saw Lester, the building’s doorman, get killed. At the same time, Téa Leoni’s Sofia Caccimelio asked Charles and Mabel to look into the disappearance of her husband, mob boss Nicky Caccimelio. So this new season has a lot going on, and there's sure to generate plenty of comedy and drama.

September streaming got off to a strong start last week with several high-profile shows debuting. The latest feature from the studio to hit the streamer is Warfare. Written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland, the movie has been widely praised for its emotionally harrowing journey. If you missed this one in theaters, check it out at home.

No, you’re not having deja vu. This isn’t The Mouse Trap, that terrible horror movie cashing on the public domain status of Steamboat Willie. This is the other horror movie cashing in on the public domain status of Steamboat Willie, the one that used Colin Jost and Pete Davidson's Staton Island Ferry.

September will continue to go strong on the streaming front. With new seasons of Slow Horses andTulsa King as well as the premiere of the Marvel Zombies animated series, there’s certainly something for everybody.

As Only Murders In The Building’s Season 5 is on the way to be part of 2025 TV premieres, we’re excited to see Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez solve more crimes and rub elbows with more big name guest stars. But with five seasons under the show’s belt, should we start preparing to say goodbye? Martin recently spoke to whether there’s talk of ending the show along with sharing a “motto” that is keeping the show going.

Ahead of the new season, the trio of stars that make up Only Murders were asked by Entertainment Tonight if fans should expect a certain number of seasons from one of the funniest shows on Hulu (and let’s face it, television). Here’s what Martin had to say:

As Martin explained, they really love making the series so much that it just doesn’t make sense for them to move on from it right now. He also said this:

Gomez was nervous to meet and work with the comedy legends that have since become her friends.

Short previously talked about being the most proud that Only Murders has a reputation of being the “most fun set to be on.” It’s clear that even big names love coming to the small screen for the series, including Meryl Streep since Season 3. Christoph Waltz, Renée Zellweger, Logan Lerman, Bobby Cannavale, and Téa Leoni will appear in the upcoming Season 5.

It sounds like Only Murders In The Building isn’t going anywhere anytime soon as long as people keep loving it. You can catch the premiere of Season 5 only on Hulu on September 9, with the first three episodes releasing on premiere day followed by one episodes per week on subsequent.

I know I’m not the only one over here who struggles with paying for all the best streaming services at once. I mean, in this economy, who even has all eight main subscriptions in their budget? Recently, I decided to actually cut my Hulu subscription from my Disney+ bundle plan to go ad-free on Disney+ alone (which is $5 a month more). However, thanks to a new look at what’s coming to Hulu, I’m having second thoughts.

I Might Need To Resubscribe To Hulu For The Upcoming Alien TV Show

Disney+ and Hulu partnered up to preview what to look forward to from their platforms on the 2025 TV schedule, and there are a lot of exciting upcoming shows to get hyped for.

The one-minute clip (via YouTube) offers first looks at a ton of new shows. It included previews for Glen Powell’s football series Chad Powers, the new Ryan Murphy show All’s Fair, the second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, Marvel’s Wonder Man, Alien: Earth, King of the Hill and Season 5 of Only Murders on the Building.

After seeing some footage from it for the first time, my most-anticipated on the list is definitely Alien: Earth.

I’m a huge fan of the science-horror franchise, and the idea of Xenomorphs being the star of their own TV show is a dream come true. It also helps that the series looks great. I also know that Alien: Earth comes from the creator of shows like Fargo and Legion, Noah Hawley, and it will take the franchise to Earth rather than space.

The series premieres on August 12, and I think I need to resubscribe to Hulu so I can watch it...

And, I Have To See The New Season Of Only Murders In The Building

The second series on that list that really reminded me why I miss my Disney+/Hulu bundle is Only Murders on the Building. The last season ended back in October, so I think I figured it would be a while until it came back, but here it is already on the way for this summer or fall.

I know I’ll want to watch the new season, because I need to see Oliver, Mabel and Charles solve the murder that happened at the end of last season. And that means Hulu’s gonna get more of my money again.

While I’m not a football fan myself, I’m a fan of Glen Powell, so I could see myself giving Chad Powers a try, too. Also, I’ll be honest, All’s Fair looks like a good time. If you’re in the same boat as me, we have a couple of options. Either I can downgrade back to the Disney+/Hulu basic plan for $10.99, or grab the premium plan for $5 more than I’m paying for $19.99. It definitely doesn’t make sense for me to go with a Hulu-only plan, considering its $9.99 with ads or $18.99 without ads on its own.

I’m definitely excited to add these Hulu shows to my queue later in the summer, but for now I’m going to continue my break from the service and get excited for my upcoming return to the platform!

Season 5 will be coming soon too -- hopefully on the 2025 TV schedule -- and I can't wait to see this joyful program back on our screens. With the Only Murders cast consisting of Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, along with many incredible guest stars, you never know what to expect each season. Now, Short has revealed the aspect of the show he’s most proud of, and as a day one fan, I love hearing this.

Short, who plays struggling Broadway director Oliver Putnam, appeared on the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, and he told the former Late Night host what his experience on the Hulu comedy has been like. He praised the reputation that the series has gotten, and he showed a lot of love for Martin and Gomez, as the three have become the most unlikely trio:

Just from BTS content posted by the cast and the way that some stars want to be on Only Murders in the Building, it’s clear that the environment on set is incredible. Knowing how genuine everyone in the cast and crew is really makes the series that much more likable, too.

Along with Short's comments, it’s also clear how much fun the set is through pictures and videos we've seen of him, Martin, and Gomez together. Considering a lot of sets have a completely different vibe, as the actor pointed out, Only Murders is pretty special, as he explained:

I have to imagine that this positive energy is part of the reason Only Murders has been on for so long. Due to the fact that the cast has so much fun making this show, that positive energy comes across on screen, which makes the viewing experience even more delightful. The fact that the series has such a great reputation just shows what kind of production it is, and I absolutely love it.

That being said, it’s also nice that it’s so fun on set because not everything on the show is so fun, like when a character is actually murdered. But being a comedy, Only Murders knows how to make it entertaining, even if they've killed off a beloved character such as Jane Lynch’s Sazz. Overall, though, Only Murders is fun both on-screen and off, and it’s one of my favorite things about the show.

Meanwhile, there isn’t a premiere date for Only Murders Season 5 yet, but the wait will be worth it. Fans can likely expect more videos and photos to come out of filming, as it was recently completed. Hopefully, that also means new episodes will be available for those of us with a Hulu subscription sometime soon. In the meantime, I'll be basking in the fact that this is such a lovely series to make.

The past month has been a whirlwind for Selena Gomez. The billionaire entrepreneur was nominated in both TV and movie categories at the Golden Globes, with her wild Netflix musical drama Emilia Pérez controversially earning four wins in major categories. However, that’s not even the most exciting news for the Hotel Transylvania actress. Boyfriend Benny Blanco recently proposed to the Disney alum, and her Only Murders In the Building co-stars had some words for the lovebirds.

Anyone who is a fan of Only Murders knows that the banter and caring bond between Mabel (Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short), and Charles (Steve Martin) is part of the reason why the show is so successful. As it happens, the chemistry and relationship between the three stars translates to real life too. To that point, the Selena + Chef host discussed her engagement and work on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and the late night host was very curious as to whether Blanco had asked her “TV dads” for their permission first, to which Gomez replied:

The cast has yet to start filming Season 5 of Only Murders, so the Golden Globes might have been the first time Gomez’s work pals had seen her since the engagement, and they could not get enough of her gorgeous ring. A video caught by someone sitting behind the pair showed the older actor playing with the ring on Gomez’s finger. Kimmel made a joke about the comedian appraising the ring, but really, no one besides Martin Short himself ever knows what he’s up to.

As for her other Only Murders mentor and friend, the “Hands to Myself” singer said that Steve Martin also sent his congratulations, but in the form of an email to her assistant. I have to say, it kind of checks out, in an amusing way. The late night TV host brought up the fact that he probably didn’t know it wasn’t going straight to Gomez, and not to contribute to the stereotype about older people and technology, but it’s probably true.

I can’t wait to see these three TV besties reunited for a new murder mystery alongside whichever A-list guest stars they pull for this upcoming season. More importantly, I can’t wait to see the cute, heartwarming pictures they take at Gomez’s wedding. At the time of updating this in August 2025, Only Murders in the Building Season 5 is going to be premiering its first three episodes on September 9th, 2025, and will continue to air weekly episodes after that. The news was confirmed by the official Instagram page for the series by the main stars:

With another season confirmed, there are so many directions that Only Murders in the Building Season 5 could go – but we do know a couple of ways:

Season 5 Will Follow The Murder Of Lester

As you can probably guess, Season 5 of Only Murders in the Building will focus on the murder of Lester, the doorman of the apartment building that they all live in, and how he ended up dead in that fountain at the very end of Season 4.

Thanks to the official logline that was revealed, Season 5 is going to follow Charles, Oliver and Mabel as they investigate his murder, refusing to believe it was an accident. However, as they look deeper, they discover secrets about their beloved city that they never would have thought of, and connections to places such as “powerful billionaires, old-school mobsters” and more.

Okay, so I need to see so much more of this, now.

Sofia Caccimelio Will Play An Important Role In Season 5

As mentioned before, Téa Leoni has joined the cast in a significant way as Sofia Caccimelio, and we know that her character is going to play an important role in the upcoming season. In a Deadline article from October 2024 that confirmed her casting, creator John Hoffman established that she'll be an "intriguing bump forward" for what is to come:

There are several reasons why fans have adored the hit mystery comedy-drama Only Murders in the Building for four seasons now. From the surprising murders in each season and their fabulous conclusions, to everything from the laughs delivered, more deeply felt emotional moments, and sweet rumors about Martin Short and Meryl Streep dating off-screen, pretty much everyone who watches becomes a devotee. And, one of the major factors that have led to so much adoration of one of the funniest shows on Hulu is due to the trio at the center, as portrayed by Short, Selena Gomez, and Steve Martin. However, Gomez recently opened up about being “nervous” when first starring in the series.

Selena Gomez has had a pretty busy year with notable works on our 2024 TV schedule (Only Murders in the Building) and 2024 movie schedule (Emilia Pérez). The singer-actor is also already set to appear on our 2025 TV schedule, too, with the Hulu mega hit's fifth season. So, it’s surprising to hear she goes into some auditions not using her real name. Although the reasoning behind why makes sense.

The Hotel Transylvania alum sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about all of her recent successes and what’s ahead. She also shared that she still goes into some auditions without using her real name to have a better chance at auditioning without preconceived notions. She said of the process:

Gomez has a good perspective on the whole ordeal, even if it makes her process of going out for roles more complicated. It shows that she’s dedicated to growing her career and makes me appreciate her more as a person in Hollywood.

The Only Murders in the Building star also explained that her agents are in on it for recorded or live auditions, and it has worked too. She shared:

I’m glad that she has found a way around the preconceived notions, the immediate no’s, and more importantly, that she has the confidence in herself to go after it.

It’s good to see that the triple threat seems to have not only become a pro at maneuvering Hollywood but has also become a guide for younger people in the profession as well. In fact, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place star, Janice Leann Brown, shared that the wizardly veteran had some really sweet advice for her in terms of finding yourself in the business.

Perhaps she gained this perspective while on her ‘crazy detour’ post-Disney, and in the middle of making the Harmony Korine flick Spring Breakers.

Whenever she gained the insight, it’s great to see that she’s making way for a more inclusive landscape for young actors and actresses. As Gomez continues navigating Hollywood and new roles herself, hopefully, her audition process gets a little less complicated. In the meantime, I’m glad she’s found a way around all of it that works for her.

I know young love is typically reserved for those who are, for lack of a better term, young. However, sometimes love stories can transpire between older folks that feel like young love in the best way. On Only Murders in the Building, Martin Short’s Oliver and Meryl Streep’s Loretta experience just that. It turns out that one of their pivotal scenes from Season 3 actually made Streep cry, because she was so happy to be playing out a wonderful, joyful romance.

In Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building, one of the suspects was Loretta for a while, but more importantly, she was Oliver’s love interest after he cast her in his musical Death Rattle Dazzle. While speaking with Decider about OMITB Season 4, co-creator John Hoffman opened up about Streep and Short’s on and off-screen chemistry, and he detailed the scene that made the Devil Wears Prada actress so emotional, and you can’t tell me this isn’t the sweetest thing ever:

Fittingly, Season 3, Episode 5 is called “Ah, Love!” and it features Oliver and Loretta having quite the date night. It begins in the actress’s tiny apartment where they share an overly-cooked pork chop dinner that causes Short’s character to lose his tooth.

Eventually, the two end up on a ferry, Loretta offers Oliver a flask and a joint, and they share a lot of stories and laughs. While Short’s character was using the date to try and cross Loretta off Only Murders in the Building’s Season 3 suspect list, he also declared his feelings for her, saying:

They both can't stop smiling after that, and Streep’s character teaches Short’s about the “tooth ferry” as they throw his lost tooth overboard. Obviously, it then ends with a kiss. It’s a totally unique, silly and lovely moment, and Streep is right, we don’t get to see love stories like this play out with older couples.

When you look at the list of the best rom-coms, most of the time the leads are young. So, as a viewer, it's always amazing to see older couples represented in these stories, and as the Oscar winner explained, it means a lot for her to play them out too. So, I totally get why she got choked up after filming the ferry scene.

Now, Meryl Streep and Martin Short are still playing lovebirds on screen as Loretta and Oliver navigate the struggles of a long-distance relationship in Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building (which just finished its run on the 2024 TV schedule).

However, there’s been a surprising amount of chatter around the possibility that Martin Short and Meryl Streep could be dating. Now, as that viral discourse continues, Only Murders in the Building’s co-creator has opened up about the co-stars on and off-screen relationship.

In the midst of Only Murders in the Building Season 4 airing on the 2024 TV schedule, there have been rumors and speculation going around about the state of Martin Short and Meryl Streep’s personal relationship. Then, on October 18, Steve Martin posted a photo on Instagram of him with Streep and Short, however, he notably (and hilariously) put a big red cancel sign through his own face. That caused a flurry online as some thought the Charles actor launched his co-stars' relationship. But again, nothing is confirmed.

However, Hoffman’s recent comments do confirm that Martin Short and Meryl Streep love each other dearly (whether that’s platonically, professionally, romantically or all of the above, we don’t know), and that’s so sweet to hear.

In Season 4 of Only Murders, we get to see the two’s chemistry on display here and there as Oliver and Loretta navigate the challenges of a long-distance relationship. Now, going into the finale, we might get to see the wedding they’ve been planning!

So, while Streep and Short’s real-life relationship status is unknown and adorable, we do know their characters are very much in love on-screen. It’s lovely to see too, because the actors have such delightful chemistry.

When Netflix began producing original programs, it did something that was largely unexpectedL rather than releasing episodes on a set schedule, it released an entire season of a series at once. This became the de facto standard for streaming TV for quite some time after that. However, in recent years, we’ve seen a shift back to traditional television release schedules, with many series on the best streaming services only releasing new episodes weekly. Even Netflix is now releasing its biggest shows in chunks of episodes rather than all at once.

The reason for this, according to conventional wisdom, is to keep shows at the forefront of cultural conversation longer. Discussing the latest episode of a show with friends once a week for a couple of months is better than expecting everybody to binge it, and then see the show disappear from cultural conversation after only a few days. It also gives people a chance to “catch up” if they can’t watch an episode as soon as it drops.

I understand the argument, and I don’t disagree that there’s value to it. But I don’t care: weekly releases need to die.

Weekly Releases Were Necessary Once, But They’re Not Anymore

In the decades of what we now refer to as “linear television” weekly, or at least daily, releases were a necessity. Shows had to be released on a schedule because it was the only way to reliably find them. We didn’t have control over what was on our screens at a given moment, we had to choose from what was available to us.

But those days are long gone. Linear networks are fading, and while it will probably still be decades before they are gone entirely, they will only continue to be a smaller part of how people get their TV.

Thanks to streaming, and the DVR before it, we have seen a massive shift away from episodic TV and toward serialized stories. Before the VCR was a thing, and even after because programming them was a pain in the ass, a TV show couldn’t be sure its viewers would be able to watch every episode, so stories were usually confined to a single show. Characters didn’t grow or change much. Everybody ended an episode in the same place they started so that people didn’t get lost. The few shows that tried serialized stories tended to fail.

But now virtually every TV show is telling a continuous story. This is part of what makes modern TV so much better than it was decades ago. More in-depth stories, characters that have actual arcs and adaptations that go much more in-depth with their source material than movies ever can. This is all wonderful.

However, If your TV season is only telling one story, that story should be available for me to watch at my leisure. If I decide to stay up late and read one more chapter of my book, I can do that because it’s my choice. The same should be true with TV.

Binge Watching Is The Best Way To Watch Any Seialized Story

In my previous career, when I still had satellite TV, I used to travel a lot for work. As a result, my DVR would fill up with all the various shows my wife and I watched, and there were a lot. Frequently, there were more new episodes than we had time to watch on the weekend, so things would build up. Eventually, when we did have time to watch a few hours of TV, we would watch several episodes of one show rather than jump between shows. It made the viewing much more satisfying.

Fun fact: before binge-watching had a name, I binge-watched the entire final season of Fringe about a year after the show ended because it was still sitting on my DVR. I had only just gotten to it.

In the era of streaming, my wife and I do much the same thing. With two young kids, we have far less TV time than we once did, so we usually only watch one show at a time. We often wait to watch any streaming show until it has run its course specifically so we don’t have to stop in the middle. But recently I decided to dust off my rarely-used Apple TV+ subscription to watch Bad Monkey. Not knowing how many episodes the season had, I didn’t realize the show hadn’t finished, but we enjoyed the show and kept watching until we got to the middle of the season and discovered we were stuck.

Looking for something new to watch on the Apple TV+ menu, we saw Slow Horses, which we had heard good things about, so we started that, only to blow through the first three seasons in a little over a week. Season 4 of Slow Horses is also getting weekly releases, so we started it, but then had to stop. At which point, we watched the two episodes of Bad Monkey that had queued up in the interim, so then we were in the middle of two different shows.

How do people live like this? Having multiple shows sitting incomplete is driving me crazy. I have found myself at points in the last few weeks with nothing to watch because the shows I'm watching have stopped. I could start something new, but then I have three shows I'm juggling. It's getting out of hand!

A Show With One Story Should Get A One Episode Drop

The math on this is pretty easy. If your show is only telling one story, then it should release all episodes at once. If it's telling more than one, then multiple episode drops are acceptable. But today, most TV series are just multi-part movies, and as long as that’s the case, complete seasons should be released all at once.

I love Only Murders in the Building. As a lifelong Steve Martin fan, I've been excited for it since it was first announced and it has never disappointed me. And I hate that my choices right now are either don't watch it and wait for the season to complete, or watch half a story.

This is actually important because viewership is part of what decides if a show gets renewed or not. If people don't watch a show in enough numbers, and early enough, good shows can get canceled. While I happen to think this method of decision-making is dumb, it's where we are. A complete episode release of a show is going to move it up my priority list, and I can't possibly be the only one that feels this way.

Truly Episodic Shows Can Have Weekly Releases That’s Fine

Using my math above, that means that if a show is truly episodic, a weekly release is fine. If I’m watching Masterchef or some other reality show competition, each episode stands on its own. So stopping for a week, or even longer, is no big deal.

The same is true for some dramatic series as well. One show that I absolutely did watch every week this year, and had zero issue doing so, was the newest season of Doctor Who on Disney+. While that show had some story threads that ran between episodes, it was truly episodic. Each episode saw The Doctor and his companion go to a place, have an adventure, complete that adventure and move on. I don’t need the next piece of that story immediately after because that particular story is done and the next episode is a new story.

There's a lot about how TV works in the world of streaming that even the streaming platforms are still trying to figure out. How to release shows is one of those things. They're all trying different things to figure out what works best. I hope they'll realize that in many cases full season releases in one go is exactly what works best.

There are, according to various estimates by people who track such things, somewhere around 3,000 billionaires in the world. That number recently increased as it has been calculated that, thanks to her staggeringly successful cosmetics brand, actress and singer Selena Gomez is now a billionaire. While she has achieved an incredible milestone of success, she’d rather not talk about it.

In a clip posted to TikTok, ET asked the Only Murders in the Building star about her new billionaire status. Perhaps unsurprisingly, she’s not that interested in touting her new wealth. She calls discussing money “distasteful” and instead thanks those who helped her achieve this status, those who purchased her Rare Beauty products. Gomez said…

Whether you have money or you don't have money, plenty of folks don't like talking about the subject. Gomez will never want anything in her life with the wealth she has accumulated, but talking about that fact would have to be weird.

While Selena Gomez has likely always had plenty of money, the amount of cash in her bank account probably hasn’t changed all that much in recent years. Her billionaire status, like that of fellow young billionaire Kylie Jenner, is tied up in her cosmetics line. If she sold Rare Beauty, she’d end up with a billion dollars, but as it stands it’s just a valuable thing she owns.

Thanking the people who buy the products is certainly the right sentiment. At the end of the day, they are the people who make her cosmetics line worth whatever analysts think it is worth. Gomez seems to be simply happy that her business venture was a success. It’s difficult to imagine that she ever considered it would become as successful as it now is.

Of course, Gomez’s other professional life is seeing quite impressive success as well. Only Murders in the Building Season 4 isn’t done yet, but the show has already been renewed for Season 5. This makes it one of the more successful streaming scripted series, in an era when streaming shows often don’t survive beyond a couple of seasons.

Gomez is also executive producing the upcoming series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place for Disney, a follow-up to the Disney Channel series that made her a more household name. While Gomez has had difficulty with the Disney Kid label that followed her around for years, she'll be returning to Disney in a very different position.

It’s an interesting parallel. Alongside Selena Gomez becoming a billionaire, her Only Murders in the Building character was advised by Eva Longoria, who is playing Gomez's character in the movie within the series, to sell her life rights for a lot of money and build something with them. Perhaps Mabel will start a cosmetics line too. Apparently, they can make you a lot of money.

After starring in Only Murders in the Building for three full seasons, Selena Gomez was finally nominated for an Emmy for her performance as Mabel. It marked her very first acting nomination, but she was up against some pretty tough competitors. Jean Smart, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Quinta Brunson, and Ayo Edebiri were also nominated, and Smart took home the award for Hacks. However, Gomez had a feeling she wouldn't be taking home the trophy, and we put together a compilation of her practicing losing the Emmy.

Gomez and her Only Murders co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short appeared on The Tonight Show to promote OMITB Season 4 right after its premiere on the 2024 TV schedule. During their interview, Fallon asked all three Emmy nominees to practice how they’d react if/when they lost the Emmy. Via CinemaBlend’s Instagram, Gomez’s practiced reaction was on par with her actual one, from the way she clapped to the way she turned to the person next to her to give them her thoughts:

While it is a disappointment that Gomez did not win, it’s pretty funny to see just how perfect her losing face was. Whether she truly had practiced it beforehand or it just came to her in the moment is unknown, but she did have the expected reaction. Considering the stacked category, and the fact that it had three previous winners in it -- with Smart, Brunson and Edebiri -- it did feel like a longshot for Gomez to win, even though she's fantastic in the Hulu whodunnit.

However, there are plenty of chances for her to come out on top, as Only Murders has been renewed for Season 5. So, hopefully, one of these years, that losing face will turn into a winning one.

While Gomez wasn't one of the winners at the 76th Emmys, her night was still incredibly special. She shared sweet footage of her niece celebrating her Emmy night by jumping up and down and cheering when her “Tia’s” category came up. So, even though she had to put her losing face to use on camera, off camera, it sounds like it was always a big celebration.

Only Murders in the Building is only in its fourth season, and it has already been renewed for Season 5. So, while Gomez perfectly applied her practiced losing fact this year, it’s always possible she won’t have to use it next year

Although Hulu’s Only Murders is on its fourth season -- one of the Emilia Perez actress’s longest-running TV stints -- her entering a new financial bracket does not come from her Hollywood success. And it’s not because of royalties from chart-toppers like “Lose You To Love Me” and “Love You Like a Love Song” either.

Bloomberg (via People) reported that over 80% of the 32-year-old’s wealth comes from her wildly successful cosmetics line, Rare Beauty. However, the “Calm Down” singer told the financial outlet the new status does not phase her and will not change the company in any way:

Although money was never the goal, we can’t just look past the incredible success Rare Beauty has had since its launch in 2020. Let me say that again. The beauty brand launched only four years ago, and since has made upwards of $400 million in net sales.

The Wizards of Waverly Place actress is not the first celebrity to attain this title via a cosmetics venture, as Kylie Jenner famously did it this way too. The reality star grew up in arguably the most famous family in the US, but her title as the world’s youngest billionaire (at the time of its achievement) was not from a family hand-out. It came from young people all over the country buying her name-branded lip kits and makeup.

Additionally, Rihanna's path to billionaire status was similar. Shifting from sophomore year in 2008 to 2015, Season 1 revealed Stephen's engagement to Lucy's best friend from home, Lydia, while Bree (Catherine Missal) appears to still be loved up with Evan (Branden Cook), despite *spoiler alert* Evan and Lucy sleeping together in the season finale. With the beginning of Season 2 alluding to a big fallout between Lucy and Lydia, the second season is offering plenty of drama but also more questions that we hope will be answered in a yet-to-be-green-lit Season 3.

Talking about the potential for a third season with DC Film Girl, creator Meaghan Oppenheimer has said: “There are a lot of ideas of what could happen. Having adored Only Murders in the Building as much as anyone across its first three seasons, I was appropriately keyed up for Season 4 hitting the 2024 TV schedule so that it could follow up on the shocking death in Season 3’s finale. And while the premiere ep was great — boo on Hulu for releasing only one — it was the second episode that kind of blew my mind, in large part due to Jane Lynch.

Not because Only Murders broke the central whodunnit formula by revealing the killer already or anything so drastic, but because it finally treated its sensational seasonal hook with enough compassion to elicit an emotional response both on and off the screen.

I Actually Feel Grief And Angst For Charles Over Sazz's Death

While the premiere logically had to catch audiences back up with its podcast-hosting trio and others in the Arconia and elsewhere, the follow-up "Gates of Heaven" started to drive home just how emotionally and narratively troubling Sazz's death is for Steve Martin's Charles. (Even if it was an honor for Lynch herself.) To the latter point, her being shot inside his apartment likely means the killer was aiming for Charles, thus putting his public safety in question.

But as a viewer, I was legitimately more engaged by how moved and affected he is by everything that happened. For all that Charles presented as being put-off or disinterested whenever Sazz showed up, his true colors shone through quite vividly throughout the ep. And not just in the way that he's hallucinating Jane Lynch's character, or through his determination to figure out who killed her.

Rather, it comes through in moments when Charles is downright lost and confused and seemingly unsure of how to properly cope with anything. It's the moments when he realizes just how dependable and meaningful Sazz was throughout his life and career, and that he so often took it all for granted.

Even though viewers are still watching Steve Martin and Jane Lynch acting opposite each other, we're essentially just seeing Charles talking to himself, and it's already evident that he may never feel at peace with never being able to tell her how much she meant to him. And that's definitely not something I came into Season 4 expecting to feel.

I Never Expected To Care About Only Murders' Victims, But Jane Lynch Makes It Easy

Season 1, the death that kicked off this whole show's premise was Tim Kono's, and while viewers learned more about Tim as the episodes went on, it wasn't in a way that made his murder an inarguable tragedy. The same goes for the twisty death of Paul Rudd's Ben Gilroy, who was introduced as something of a pompous turd, and only gained a few empathy points as time went on.

Jayne Houdyshell's Bunny Folger serves as the slightest of exceptions, since she at least had a full season to make an impact before being killed off for Season 2's murder. And it's not like Bunny was a blessed angel or anything, so her absence wasn't an exercise in mourning.

But due to the character being a kind-hearted and often selfless talent, combined with Jane Lynch's low-key "aw shucks" performance, I felt more sadness about the titular Murder in that 30-minute stretch than during any other point in this show's existence thus far. It absolutely helps that we see the actual Sazz in Brazzos' BTS footage instead of just in Charles' mind.

I can certainly envision a future where this investigation gets to a point where I no longer feel very sad or mournful about what's happening. But for now, Only Murders in the Building has authentically evoked an emotion that isn't mirth, and I hope Sazz gets justice!

Ever since it's premiere, the comedy Only Murders in the Building has been one of the best shows on Hulu. While Season 3 got a ton of Emmy nominations, fans like myself have been treated to the premiere of Season 4 on the streaming service. I loved Only Murders' Season 4 premiere, but I've got a beef with Hulu.

Only Murders in the Building is just one reason for a Hulu subscription, in addition to other acclaimed shows like The Handmaid's Tale. While some folks are figuring out how to watch Only Murders Season 4, I was able to stream it on its premiere. It was a great return to the comedy series, but there's an issue: Hulu only released a single episode this year.

Binge-watching has become commonplace for streaming services, especially Netflix. Personally I've always loved Hulu's preferred method, which is to give fans up to three episodes to stream, before switching to the weekly release method. It's the best of both words, allowing for some binge-watching and then earning each new episode afterward. Unfortunately, that wasn't the strategy for Only Murders Season 4.

Instead, fans like myself were only given a single episode of Season 4. And since Only Murders in the Building's premiere for the season clocked in at around 37 minutes, it came and go rather quickly. I needed at least one more ep, but preferably two. Although there is an upside: the new season will last longer now.

Aside from my penchant for binge-watching my favorite shows, I really craved another episode (or two) of Only Murders in the Building Season 4 because of how the premiere went down. While the audience saw Jane Lynch's Sazz Pataki die during the Season 3 finale, our trio of heroes had no idea it happened. Their realization that something is awry is teased throughout the first episode, but the aha moment doesn't actually happen until its final moments.

Eventually the podcast hosts realize that something went down in Charles' apartment, and that someone who knows them very well is responsible. They find blood in the kitchen, and a bullet hole in the glass, as well as the remains of Sazz in the incinerator. While the tension delightfully built up throughout the episode's runtime, that cliffhanger ending left me wanting more. After all, the protagonists spent the majority of the episode without having a murder to investigate.

Obviously my beef with Hulu's release strategy isn't going to keep me away from Only Murders, as I'll be tuning in weekly to see what goes down in Season 4... especially with the inclusion of guest stars like Eugene Levy and Molly Shannon. But I sure wish I got to at least watch Episode 2.

That’s probably not a foreign concept for the woman who’s been singing and acting her whole life. Gomez said:

The upcoming fourth season of Only Murders in the Building is almost here, and soon, fans will be reunited with Mabel, Charles, and Oliver. Despite the age gap, they are all as close as ever, and it’s truly one of the things I look forward to most each season of Only Murders.

It does make me wonder just how many youth-skewing trends Gomez has explained to Short and Martin throughout their time together. Also wondering how many they’ve attempted to try out themselves, even without posting.

I would give just about anything and everything to see Short and Martin try the viral “Apple” dance, but it seems like Gomez may be a bit behind on telling her co-stars everything. It is funny to see their reactions when they are asked about trends because the only reason why they’d be up-to-date on it all is because of Gomez.

Whether it’s Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin or Mabel, Oliver, and Charles, it’s clear that their bond is never breaking. It’s certainly one of the best parts of Only Murders in the Building and one of the reasons why it’s one of the funniest shows on Hulu, and that will continue when Season 4 premieres on August 27 with a Hulu subscription.

August comes to a close this week and September begins. At the end of this week, we’ll get our monthly content shuffle, but that doesn’t mean that any of the best streaming services are waiting until next month to release some good stuff. There’s plenty new on Netflix and upcoming on Hulu for streaming fans to enjoy before the month is out.

This week sees a couple of popular streaming services bring back new seasons of their most popular shows, while a couple more series debut, in hopes they’ll get the audience's attention enough to get future seasons. A pair of noteworthy theatrical films will also be making their streaming debut, including one that will give those who saw it in theaters a reason to go back and give it another look.

Only Murders In The Building, Season 4 - August 27 (Hulu) 

If there’s a single reason to have a Hulu subscription, it may be Only Murders in the Building. The crime drama/comedy starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez has been near perfect for all three of its previous seasons and fans waiting for the new season are about to be rewarded.

The new season of Only Murders in the Building will see the trio investigate/podcast the death of Jane Lynch’s Roz, who got shot at the end of last season. Was she the intended target, or was the killer trying to get to Steve Martin’s Charles? And how will the fact that Hollywood has now entered the picture impact the friendship?

After Baywatch: Moment In The Sun - August 28 (Hulu)

Even decades later, it still feels weird to say this, but there was a time when Baywatch was the most popular TV show in the world. Maybe it’s the simple fact that pretty people in swimsuits are universal, but one cannot undersell just what a phenomenon the show was.

In a new documentary series many of the Baywatch cast, including Pamela Anderson, will talk about their time on the show and what it was like being part of the world-changing series. We know that Baywatch wasn't a wonderful experience for everybody.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, Season 2 - August 29 (Prime Video)

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 1 ending left fans with a significant reveal at the end that many have probably continued to think about since then. With Sauron now in the picture, the real battle for Middle-Earth can begin.

Season 2 promises to justify the series name, as the Rings of Power will truly take center stage as Sauron attempts to consolidate his power.

Terminator: Zero, Season 1 - August 29 (Netflix)

Decades after Arnold Schwarzenegger first said “I’ll be back” the Terminator franchise is still quite popular. This is even though few would argue that since Terminator 2: Judgment Day, none of the entries in the series have been particularly special. But if you’re looking for a fresh take on The Terminator and have a Netflix subscription, you'll want to check out Terminator: Zero.

Terminator: Zero is a Japanese anime adaptation of the franchise and it certainly gives Terminator a new look. The story looks to be very similar to what we've seen before. Somebody is trying to stop the future from happening and SkyNet enlists cyborg killing machines to stop them. However, the look and feel of the series are distinctly anime, and that may be enough to set this one apart, and above, other recent attempts.

Cookie Monster’s Bake Sale: Back to School - August 29 (Max)

Two types of series that tend to do well on streaming are kids’ shows and baking competitions. Cookie Monster’s Bake Sale isn’t even the only attempt to bring these two concepts together, but it’s one of the few to get more than one season so it must be doing something right.

Cookie Monster’s Bake Sale: Back to School will see teams of kids compete to raise money for their local libraries by putting on bake sales. Yvette Nicole Brown co-hosts with Cookie Monster in what is guaranteed to be a heartwarming time, and probably the best way to get your kid to watch The Great British Baking Show with you.

Kaos, Season 1 - August 29 (Netflix)

Some actors are so great at what they do, that it’s just fun to watch them do it, under any circumstances. Jeff Goldblum is one of those who has a distinctive style all his own, and if you enjoy his work, you’ll want to see what he’s doing next.

Kaos sees Jeff Goldblum as Zeus. he’s the king of the gods in a modern world that doesn’t believe and doesn’t care about him, and he’s really unhappy about it. It’s hard to guess how much more there is going on in the series than Goldblum simply being Goldblum, but honestly, that might be enough.

The Fall Guy Extended Cut - August 30 (Peacock)

The Fall Guy was one of those movies that critics seemed to enjoy, as did the theatrical audience that went to see it, but unfortunately, the film still struggled to find that audience at the box office. If you’re one of those people who skipped the movie in theaters but were curious about it, you’ll have a chance to see what others enjoyed so much as long as you have a Peacock subscription.

And even if you are somebody who saw The Fall Guy in theaters, you may still want to check the movie out streaming. Peacock is releasing both a theatrical cut and an extended cut so there will be a new version with 20 minutes of additional footage that may make the movie even better.

Kinds of Kindness- August 30 (Hulu)

The last time that director Yorhos Lathimos and actress Emma Stone got together they created Poor Things a movie had a pretty impressive night at the 2024 Academy Awards, especially for Stone who took home her second Best Actress Oscar.

In Kinds of Kindness Stone will just be part of the story, one member of an ensemble telling multiple stories. The movie makes its streaming debut on Hulu this week and is absolutely worth your time if you have the chance to give it your attention.

September is already looking like a strong month for streaming. Disney+ will debut Agatha: All Along. Apple TV+ will be the home for Wolfs starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. There’s a lot of great content on the way as we say goodbye to summer.

Three are a lot of places around the world that have become famous for being set locations or exterior shots from television shows. From restaurants, to prisons, to houses, to everything in between. These are just a few of these now-famous locations everyone recognizes from their favorite shows. 

Tom's Restaurant - Seinfeld

In virtually every episode of Seinfeld, the gang met up at Monk's Diner. The interiors were a set, of course, but all the exterior shots for Monk's were of Tom's Restaurant at the corner of Broadway and 112th Street in New York City. The cast of Seinfeld is enshrined in caricatures on the wall. One more fun fact about the eatery, it was also the restaurant that inspired the song "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega. 

Highclere Castle - Downton Abbey

Grand houses dot the English countryside, many of which are quite famous for their ornate beauty. One house now stands out from the rest, Highclere Castle in Hampshire. As hardcore fans of Downton Abbey know, not only was it used for the exterior of the house, but many of the interiors, including the iconic library, were used in the production. 

The Painted Ladies - Full House

San Francisco was once home to thousands of grand Victorian homes, though many were destroyed by the earthquake in 1906. A notable row that survived across from Alamo Square Park is famously known as "The Painted Ladies" and is a big tourist destination for fans of Full House after they featured prominently in the show. 

Police Beach - Lost

The mysterious island in Lost was in actually many filming locations across Oahu in Hawaii. One of the most famous locations is known as Papailoa Beach or Police Beach. It is located on the North Shore and was used a lot in the show as the spot where the plane crashed and where the survivors lived for a time. 

94 Bedford Street - Friends

94 Bedford Street, at the corner of Grove and Bedford, has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York City. Not because anyone famous has lived there, but because that's the building used for the exterior shots of where most of the characters on Friends lived.

St. Michael's Mount - House Of The Dragon

St. Michael's Mount in southeast England is less famous than its cousin, Mont-Saint-Michel in France, but they are very similar monasteries. Both were built on little spits of land surrounded by a tidal area that leaves them completely separated from the mainland much of the time. St. Michael's Mount serves as the exterior for Driftmark, the seat of House Velaryon in House Of The Dragon.

Salish Lodge & Spa - Twin Peaks

On Twin Peaks, one of the most prominent locations is The Great Northern Inn, where Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) lives during his time in the town investigating the murder of Laura Palmer. The exterior of the hotel, located above a beautiful waterfall, is actually the Salish Lodge & Spa in Snoqualmie, WA.

The Bull & Finch Pub - Cheers

Tourists in Boston are often startled to see the exterior of Cheers as they walk around the Public Garden at the foot of Beacon Hill. The famous bar from Cheers was once called The Bull & Finch Pub and has been in that spot since the late '60s. In the early '00s, the owners changed the name to Cheers. 

Pasadena City Hall - Parks And Recreation

Parks & Recreation may be set in the town of Pawnee, Indiana, but the exterior shots of the City Hall on the show were filmed much closer to where the show was actually filmed in LA. The building is, in fact, the City of Pasadena's City Hall. A far cry from rural Indiana, but these days the building is more famous for being in a fictional TV town in the Hoosier state than the City of Roses. 

Richmond, London - Ted Lasso

A little alley in Richmond, London, has become one of the most visited tourist spots in a town chock-full of great tourist spots. That's because it served as the exterior to Coach Lasso's apartment in Ted Lasso. The pub nearby was also one of the most-used shooting locations for the show and fans of the hilarious show have been flocking ever since. 

The Belnord - Only Murders In The Building

There are a few famous apartment buildings on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, including The Belnord. The grand building is one of the most prominent of all, especially now as it serves as the titular building in Only Murders In The Building starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. It's located at 86th St. and Amsterdam.

Dubrovnik Harbor - Game Of Thrones

HBO's Game of Thrones made quite a few locations around the world famous, and while the city of Dubrovnik, Croatia was already famous among historians, it entered popular culture in a big way when it was the stand-in for King's Landing throughout many episodes of the show. There is a little harbor on the city's west coast that was one of the locations used in some of the most famous scenes.  

The Waybury Inn - Newhart

In Newhart Dick Loudon (Bob Newhart) and his wife Joanna (Mary Frann) moved to Vermont to run the Stratford Inn. The real-life Stratford Inn is actually The Waybury Inn in Middlebury Vermont. And yes, it's still a hotel, and you can still stay there. 

Ranger's House - Bridgerton

The stately home of the Bridgerton family in Bridgerton is, in fact, called Ranger's House. Built in 1722 in what is now London, it's located near Greenwich Park, just a couple hundred yards from the famous Royal Observatory, Greenwich, which was where time was set for the world for centuries, but it is now a museum. 

Mr. Beef - The Bear

Chicago is famous for a lot of different foods. Pizza and hot dogs are probably the two most people think of first. Or at least, they used to. After the wild success of The Bear, one of the best shows on Hulu, the Windy City is increasingly famous for Italian Beef sandwiches, like the ones served at Mr. Beef. The small eatery stood in for The Beef on the show. 

15 Washington Street, Brooklyn - Gossip Girl

Located basically under the Manhattan Bridge in the Dumbo neighborhood, 15 Washington Street has become iconic for its use as the exterior of the Humphrey loft in Gossip Girl. 

Bell Works, Holmdel, NJ - Severance

The Bell Works building in Holmdel, NJ was locally famous for decades before the Apple TV+ show Severance made it famous everywhere. Long a favorite in architectural circles, the building, designed by Eero Saarinen, was the R&D headquarters for Bell Labs for decades starting in the early '60s. It is a perfect building to house the mysterious Lumon Industries on the show.  

Chief Joseph Ranch - Yellowstone

Some terrible things have gone down on the Dutton Yellowstone Ranch in Yellowstone. It has to be the most violent place in all of Montana, in the context of the show. Luckily, the real ranch where it is filmed, Chief Joseph Ranch is like it in looks only. It's a guest ranch and fans of the show can even stay there. Just try not to murder anyone. 

Holsten’s Brookdale Confectionary - The Sopranos

One of the most controversial and possibly one of the best endings of a show in TV history took place at Holsten’s Brookdale Confectionery in Bloomfield, NJ. The Sopranos ended when Meadow walked through the door of the diner and the screen went black. Did Tony die or didn't he? The arguments will last forever, an argument you could have over some onion rings at Holsten's.

Twisters Restaurant - Breaking Bad

A Twisters Restaurant in Albuquerque, NM is better known to Breaking Bad fans as Los Pollos Hermanos. The chain restaurant location on Isleta Boulevard in Albuquerque was re-dressed as Los Pollos Hermanos for the show and its spinoff Better Call Saul. 

Speedy’s Cafe - Sherlock

221B Baker Street is one of the most famous addresses in literary history as the home of Sherlock Holmes. On the BBC show Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, the flat is located next door to a cafe called Speedy's. Not only is the restaurant's exterior featured on the show, but the interior is shown on occasion, such as when Watson (Freeman) meets with Mycroft (Mark Gatiss). 

Senoia, Georgia - The Walking Dead

Senoia, Georgia is a small unassuming town on the far southwest edge of the Atlanta metro area. It's a quaint, picturesque southern town that is not a hotbed for tourism by fans of The Walking Dead as it became the setting for the settlement of Alexandria on the show. 

Buckingham Fountain - Married... With Children

The Buckingham Fountain in the heart of Grant Park in Chicago has long been a local landmark in The Windy City. When it was used in the opening moments of the credits on Fox's Married... With Children, it became a national landmark, recognized the world over. Along with having one of the most famous musicians ever singing the theme song, Frank Sinatra, it became an iconic opening. 

Mystic Grill - The Vampire Diaries

The real Mystic Grill is located in Covington, GA, and has become a must-see location for fans of The Vampire Diaries. It pre-existed the show and looks pretty much identical to what fans remember from the beloved show. 

Frist Campus Center - House

Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, where Dr. Gregory House torments his residents and his patients on House isn't actually a hospital at all. The famous exteriors are actually of the Frist Campus Center on the campus of Princeton University. The building is also famous for Room 302, where Albert Einstein lectured when he was a professor at the school. 

Torrance High School - Beverly Hills, 90210

Without a doubt, Torrance High School in Torrance, CA, is one of the most recognizable locations in television history. It was the setting for West Beverly High on Beverly Hills, 90210, but that's not all. It was also the stand-in for Sunnydale High on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Ulysses S. Grant High School in The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and it was used in movies like She's All That, Not Another Teen Movie, and Bruce Almighty, among others. 

Waterfords' House - The Handmaid's Tale

In The Handmaid’s Tale, the Waterfords live in Boston, but the mansion used for the exterior shots of their home is actually in Hamilton, Ontario, near Toronto. Like other houses featured in shows, it's become a popular place for selfies, but do you really want to memorialize that house after everything awful that happened inside it? 

Rosenheim Mansion - American Horror Story

The stately Rosenheim Mansion in Los Angeles has a look that is just perfect for horror stories. Most notably, it was used in American Horror Story. It's also been featured in other creepy shows like The Twilight Zone, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, and Dexter. Yikes! 

Franklin Square House Apartments - St. Elsewhere

The exterior of St. Eligius Hospital, the fictional hospital in the critically acclaimed '80s show St Elsewhere is actually an apartment building called Franklin Square House Apartments, in Boston's South End, where the hospital was also set. The show launched quite a few careers, including Howie Mandel's and Denzel Washington's, and like their careers, the apartment building is still around today. 

1618 Pine St., Boulder Colorado - Mork & Mindy

If you find yourself in Boulder, CO, and are a fan of Mork & Mindy, you can take a selfie in front of their apartment. The exterior used is a house that still stands on  Pine St., near the middle of town. 

Old Joliet Prison - Prison Break

If you close your eyes and picture a classic American prison, you'll probably see something that looks a lot like the old Joliet Prison in Joliet, IL. For that reason, the now-closed prison has been a popular shooting location over the years. Not only does it serve as the exterior of the jail in Prison Break, but it's also where Jake Blues (John Belushi) is released from in The Blues Brothers, and has been in numerous other movies and TV shows. 

Cincinnati Enquirer Building - WKRP In Cincinnati

Though it was really only used in the opening credits and very occasionally in the show, the studio for the fictitious radio station WKRP from the hit '70s sitcom in the Cincinnati Enquirer Building, located in downtown Cincinnati. When you're in town, you can pretend all your favorite DJs and intrepid reporter Les Nessman are hard at work in the building. 

For its fourth season, Only Murders in the Building is exiting both its titular building and New York to head for the Hollywood Hills, and will boast a slew of A+ comedy talent in the process. Not only is Meryl Street returning with the core cast, but new stars such as Eugene Levy, Molly Shannon, Melissa McCarthy and more are joining the fun to dig into the murder of Jane Levy’s Sazz Pataki. But it sounds like one familiar Season 3 face won’t be seen: Jesse Williams’ totally realistically named Tobert.

Williams first arrived on the scene in Only Murders as the cameraman working with Paul Rudd’s Ben to capture footage for a documentary, and along the way became romantically entangled with Selena Gomez’s Mabel. They were a cute couple, even if saying their names together is kind of depressing, but chose to call it quits in the Season 3 finale, with the idea being that he was heading to Los Angeles for an indie film.

Though many fans were probably hopeful to see them rekindle their romance in Season 4, Jesse Williams shared an update with People that pretty much poisons that idea and then pushes it down an elevator shaft. Here’s what he had to say:

Not very much build-up, pomp or circumstance involved with that answer, though it’s hard to tell what the tone of the response was just from the wording. Still, Williams didn’t exactly overshare, and it doesn’t appear as if he offered up any other insight when it came to the Hulu comedy hit.

By all means, the reason there could very well be that he was speaking at the premiere of his new docuseries Distilled, which debuts on August 1 with an AMC+ subscription, and possibly didn’t want to spend too much promotional time talking about past projects instead of new ones. Which would be totally understandable, since Distilled centers on Black entrepreneurs and speaks to the actor’s personal interests.

But for all the sleuths out there, Jesse Williams’ terse response is more likely indicative of a surprise appearance somewhere in Season 4. After all, if Tobert is already going to be in Los Angeles, which is where the new murder will take Charles, Oliver and Mabel, then a meet-up between them seems inevitable. Not that L.A. is a tiny city or anything, but the show legitimately set up Mabel saying she might visit him in the third season’s capper.

So if Tobert doesn’t show up in Season 4, then all is well and we were expecting it. But if he does suddenly pop up to take Mabel out for a night on the town in Episode 5 or something, I’d like to be the first to good-naturedly wag my finger at Williams for fibbing. Let’s just hope he’s not also guilty of murder! Either him or his character.

Only Murders in the Building’s Season 4 mystery will be ready for amateur sleuths to obsess over when it hits the 2024 TV schedule on August 27.

With the release date for Only Murders In The Building Season 4 only two months away, Selena Gomez offered a hilarious tease about one of the funny cast members joining the hilarious Hulu comedy. While I'm already excited for the return of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez’s crime adventures, the actress has me even more intrigued now because of a funny farting story that involved Meryl Streep and Molly Shannon.

Martin Short is filling in on Jimmy Kimmel Live as host this week, so of course he had to have Selena Gomez on as a guest. While the pair were talking about the upcoming season on the 2024 TV schedule, Short brought up one scene where Gomez was laughing so hard at Molly Shannon that he noticed it in the episode itself, he could tell she was cracking up. Then, Gomez responded with the reason why, saying:

Oh my goodness, I don’t blame Selena Gomez one bit!!

That sounds too funny to possibly not break for. In the late-night segment (on Kimmel's YouTube channel), Gomez couldn’t help but start laughing while telling the story, too. The account is a great tease for Season 4, because Molly Shannon was cast specifically for the upcoming episodes. It has been revealed that the Saturday Night Live alum is playing a “high-powered LA businesswoman who finds herself drawn into the world of investigation in NY.” Here’s what Short said about the sequence:

Following the release of the Only Murders In The Building Season 4 teaser trailer, we definitely have a sense of what to expect from the new season. Charles, Oliver and Mabel will be traveling to Hollywood after they learn that executives want to make a movie based on the work they’ve done with their podcast over the years. Molly Shannon is featured in one funny scene in the trailer where the trio are being asked to sign away their life rights so their stories could be featured in the Hollywood movie.

I can’t wait to see how Molly Shannon somehow ends up farting in Meryl Streep’s face!! She is an exciting addition to the series, but there are so many more stars in Season 4 to be excited for.

Per an Instagram post from the series’ account, Eugene Levy is cast as Charles, Eva Longoria is cast as Mabel and Zach Galifianakis will play Oliver in the movie based on the podcasting trio. I absolutely cannot wait to see what bits come from this development in the series! Also, Kumail Nanjiani and Melissa McCarthy are among the cast, however, their roles remain a mystery.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 is set to debut in roughly two months, so now’s the time we’ll start learning even more about what the next batch of episodes holds in store for people with a Hulu subscription. Admittedly, the Season 4 trailer did a good job of laying out what awaits Charles-Haden Savage, Oliver Putnam and Mabel Mora in their newest adventure, but there are still plenty of questions to be answered, like who many of the new faces in the Only Murders Season 4 cast are playing. Well, we can officially take three names out of that mystery pile, as it’s been revealed who Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria are playing, and their roles are brilliant.

If you’re like me and have been closely following long with news about Only Murders in the Building Season 4’s development, you’ve probably been wondering how many of the big-name actors are playing fictional versions of themselves. It’s a fair question to ask given that’s how Sting, Amy Schumer and Matthew Broderick were handled in past seasons. Well, that will indeed be the case for Levy, Galifianakis and Longoria, because they’ll respectively play Charles, Oliver and Mabel in the in-universe movie about the Only Murders podcast.

Whoever chose Levy, Galifianakis and Longoria to star in this world’s Only Murders movie deserves a raise, Sure, Longoria and Galifianakis are noticeably older/younger than Mabel and Oliver, respectively, but I have no doubt they’ll be able to give off the same vibes as these characters, just like Levi will surely do with Charles. On the other hand, maybe we’re in for a twist and these actors will end up playing the Only Murders protagonists pretty differently onscreen. After all, there have been plenty of times, both in fiction and real life, where a film production starts off remaining faithful to its source material, only to take a lot of creative liberties and become something completely different.

In any case, I’m looking forward to not just seeing how this world’s versions of Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria performs their newest roles, but also how they interact with Charles, Oliver and Mabel when the cameras aren’t rolling… the cameras on this fictional movie set, I mean. Other new actors who’ve come aboard for Only Murders in the Building Season 4 include Molly Shannon as an unnamed executive involved with the movie’s production, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Kind, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Catherine Cohen, Jin Ha, Design Borges, Siena Werber and Lilian Rebelo. Meryl Streep, Michael Cyril Creighton and Da’Vine Joy Randolph will also be back to reprise their established characters.

Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building is on the way. We’re just over two months away from the premiere of the new season on the 2024 TV schedule, which will see our favorite true crime podcasting trio trying to solve another terrible murder that happened in their building. As a fan, I’m always interested in behind-the-scenes news, but the latest image is completely bizarre, and there’s only one way I can make sense of it.

The Only Murders in the Building Instagram account dropped a behind-the-scenes image which is as amazing as it is nonsensical. It shows Selena Gomez in a glittery dress that looks like something out of a Busby Berekely musical, while Steve Martin and Martin Short are dressed in full-body mo-cap pajamas. Considering Only Murders isn’t exactly a CGI-heavy effects-driven series, this picture is kinda wild.

Even the caption on the image says it’s “not even gonna ask” because the whole thing doesn’t make any obvious sense, but there is one way that it could make sense. In Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building, we were introduced to the “white room” a place where Steve Martin’s Charles went when he completely lost himself while rehearsing. A lot of weird stuff happened to him when we saw the white room visualized, and something similar could be happening here.

This may be some sort of dream sequence or hallucination. It’s the only thing that would really seem to make sense. It’s possible there could be some sort of plot reason that the characters could end up looking like this. Maybe Martin Short’s character has decided to forgo producing Broadway plays and is now making science fiction movies, but that seems unlikely. Or, it's possible that Steve Martin's character is making a very odd return to Brazzos.

We do know from the Only Murders in the Building Season 4 trailer that was released that at least part of the story will take place in Hollywood, as a studio is going to try and turn the podcast run by the characters into a movie. So the scene may be related to that, but it seems unlikely that the three main characters would actually appear in any such movie. Only one of them has any acting experience, and he’s not exactly A-list.

So, I think some sort of silly dream sequence is the only logical conclusion to draw from this photo.

The new season will follow the Season 3 finale of Only Murders where Jane Lynch's Sazz was mysteriously shot by a sniper. Whether the killer was aiming for her, or thought she was Martin's Charles Haden Savage, we don't yet know. Lynch was "honored" to be the new season's victim because we know she'll be a bigger part of the show through flashbacks.

Whatever this photo means, it will almost certainly be great. Only Murders in the Building has been excellent throughout its run and we certainly hope it won’t stop now. We know the new season will have even more celebrity guest stars than the previous installments, which will lead to many exciting opportunities. Only Murders in the Building Season 4 is set to debut for everybody with a Hulu subscription on August 27.

Only Murders In The Building Season 4 is just around the corner, and all signs point to it delivering another terrific round of murder mystery-centric entertainment. As teased at the end of the last season, Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) are on the hunt to see who is responsible for the death of stunt double Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), and based on the brand new teaser that is now online, the episodes will unfurl an adventure that takes the podcasters out of their comfort zones and will see them interacting with some exciting familiar faces.

As seen above, Hulu has unveiled a first look at the latest season of the popular streaming series, and there are two things that immediately stick out: the stars and the setting. Not only will the new episodes include the return of actors like Meryl Streep, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Michael Cyril Crighton, but the cast of Only Murders In The Building Season 4 also includes Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Zach Galifianakis, Molly Shannon, Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Kind, and Melissa McCarthy. We get our first look at all of their characters in this teaser, and frankly, I can imagine any of them being the show's latest killer.

Melissa McCarthy and Molly Shannon both look particularly devilish, respectively delivering a wink and impish smile, but let's not instantly count out Zach Galifianakis or Richard Kind. The former may not look like much of a threat in his winter jacket and beanie, but this show has shown many times that looks can be deceiving– and the latter could just be wearing that eyepatch to operate a sniper rifle a la Rebecca Ferguson in Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1.

It's also noteworthy that Only Murders In The Building is going to be taking at least a fraction of its story approximately 3,000 miles away from the titular edifice a.k.a. The Arconia. It's revealed in the trailer that there is a Hollywood studio interested in turning the true crime podcast into a movie, which means that the trio is going to be flying to Los Angeles for a spell. Of course, we can probably expect that the trip will end up benefiting their investigation of Sazz's murder as well.

In addition to all of the stars mentioned above, the new season is also set to include Daphne Rubin-Vega, Catherine Cohen, and Jin Ha in undisclosed roles. The 2024 TV premiere schedule has Only Murders In The Building Season 4 arriving for Hulu subscribers on August 27 (a little over a year after the debut of Season 3), and the subsequent nine episodes will debut weekly on Tuesdays. Here's hoping that the mystery lives up to the excitement of the teaser.

In a crossover event I didn't think was possible, Disney+, Hulu, and Max are releasing a bundle. Yes, you read that right: it was announced that Disney Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery will be working together to offer a “first of its kind offering” that will make it so you can pay for three of the best streaming services at once. 

According to a press release from the two companies, this summer people will be able to purchase the bundle, and it will provide “subscribers with the best value in entertainment and an unprecedented selection of content.” This means shows and movies from networks and studios like ABC, DC, Discovery, Disney, FX, Hulu, Marvel, Pixar, Warner Bros. and more will all be available through one payment. 

This plan will also be offered at both ad-supported and ad-free levels, and it will be available to buy on Disney+, Hulu and Max. 

Now, while all this is fine and dandy, and it sounds great that we’ll be able to watch all of Disney+’s best movies, Hulu’s greatest series, and Max’s legendary TV selection via one payment (and possibly platform?), I have two major questions. 

How Much Will This Bundle Cost?

The first, and biggest, question I have about this bundle is in regards to cost. At the moment, here’s the breakdown of how much people have to pay for the Disney+/Hulu bundle (which covers both a Disney+ subscription and Hulu subscription) that’s been around for a while now and a Max subscription:

• Disney Bundle Duo Basic (Disney+ and Hulu with ads): $9.99 per month
• Disney Bundle Duo Premium (Disney+ and Hulu without ads): $19.99 per month
• Max (with ads): $9.99 per month
• Max (without ads): $15.99 per month

It’s worth noting that if you have Hulu, or one of the above bundles, you can add Max as an add-on for $15.99 per month, and that’s been an option for a very long time. Through that addition, you get “HBO content available via Hulu” while other “additional content [is] only available via the Max app.”

So, if you were to get this bundle, and we were to hypothetically go for an ad-based plan, would it be $19.98? Or without ads, it could be $35.98? I’d imagine that if they are bundling and making a big deal about it, the price would be cheaper than that. 

However, considering the rising prices across streamers like Netflix and these three services, I don’t expect this bundle to be cheap. At the moment, there is no listed price for the upcoming deal, however, the press release said “additional details” will be shared in the “coming months.” 

Will You Be Able To Use All Three Platforms In One App? 

Another detail I’d like the streamers to share in the “coming months” revolves around whether the three platforms will be available on one app or if you’ll need all three. 

Recently, Disney+ made it so you can watch Hulu directly through its app. Which means, you don’t necessarily have to have both apps. Also, as we discussed above, if you have a Max add-on with your Hulu account, you can watch some HBO programming directly through the Hulu app.

As someone who pays for the Disney+/Hulu bundle already, I’m used to using the two apps separately and paying for them with one bill. So, I’d be hard-pressed to believe that this bundle will make it so you can use all three services under one interface. 

Plus, the press release says that users will be able to “purchase on any of the three streaming platforms websites offered.” 

However, the news release does not provide a clear answer yet. If this bundle proves to be successful, and the Max, Hulu and Disney+ partnership continues, maybe they will merge interfaces. 

Overall, this news about these three massive streamers offering a bundle leaves me with some major questions, and as a subscriber of all three, I’m very curious to learn more about it.
