One of the worst feelings as a TV fan is when you get invested in a series, only to learn later that it’s never coming back. It happens every year without fail to something someone’s watching and there’s been some big TV cancellations already this year. While sometimes the networks and streamers pull the plug at the right time for some shows, let’s talk about the ones people are still sour about, one of which I think is the indisputable bummer.

I'm Not Actually Talking About Pushing Daisies, Though Fans Are Still Sad

While perusing Reddit, I noticed a discussion on the TV shows that got away. Since this topic is near and dear to my own heart, I obviously clicked through and noticed one popular show fans got behind was an ABC comedy that was on for two seasons from 2007 to 2009. It was created by Bryan Fuller, who has since made other popular shows like Hannibal and Star Trek: Discovery.

Yes, fans are still upset about the loss of Pushing Daisies.

Pushing Daisies is a “forensic fairy tale” about a guy (Lee Pace) who can bring dead things back to life with his touch. It was critically acclaimed and won seven Emmys. Lucky for fans, Fuller recently said he’s actually working on a Season 3, so it might not always be on this list. At least a girl can hope.

There Are Lots Of Other Shows Fans Are Salty About, Including Happy Endings

Another one TV fans are passionate about is ABC’s sitcom, Happy Endings, which ran for three seasons from 2011 to 2013. Not unlike Friends or New Girl, it’s about six best friends in their late 20s/early thirties as they navigate life and relationships. Unlike Friends or New Girl, fans feel it was kicked off the air way too soon.

Which Brings Me To Mindhunter

Netflix has earned a reputation of cancelling a lot of shows too soon, but one that fans stop talking about seven years later. David Fincher’s Mindhunter series was universally beloved when it came out and got two seasons, but a third season never happened reportedly because it was too expensive to produce and didn’t draw a big enough crowd for those with a Netflix subscription.

These are all great picks, but I think there’s one that’s especially frustrating. Let’s talk about it.

And The Winner Is… Freaks And Geeks

Freaks And Geeks got cancelled for a number of reasons, but looking back, it’s absolutely wild that we missed out on more than one season of a coming-of-age show from Judd Apatow starring Linda Cardellini, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, James Franco and Busy Philipps. It's untimely end has left fans like @pantstoaknifefight2 with a lot of questions.

It only ran for 18 episodes from 1999 to 2000, and people aren’t happy… still. The comments section was, in fact, full of comments like this from @plane-tie6392 and more:

Can you imagine if we had seen these actors grow up together in these roles before becoming as big as they are now? It feels like a crime that never happened, and Rogen once rightfully called out the guy who pulled the plug. The short-lived show is currently on Amazon Prime, Paramount+ and Pluto TV.

When a show you love gets cancelled, there’s a period of denial. There’s a hope that maybe something could happen and the show could get saved. It does happen, with series occasionally changing networks, or more recently streaming platforms. However, after enough time has passed, a fan can come to terms with never getting new episodes of a beloved show again. And then, sometimes, over 15 years later, you hear Bryan Fuller say that Pushing Daisies could get a third season.

If I could snap my fingers and magically create new episodes for a cancelled TV show, I would probably choose Pushing Daisies, and I'd like to hope I'm not the only one. The show often comes up when shows that were cancelled too soon are brought up.

The series is equal parts heartwarming and weird. But, after so much time had passed, I had given up all hope of seeing more. Then, during the press junket for his new film Dust Bunny, series creator Bryan Fuller told The Mary Sue that he’s actively working on making a new season happen. He said…

I’m shook. I think I need to sit down and have a piece of pie. It’s one thing to hear a show creator say that he would be willing or even interested in returning to an old project. People say that all the time. However, Fuller says here is that there is active work on a new season of PD. And, apparently, there’s a story, the cast is on board, and they want to start filming in 2026. This clearly isn't a done deal, but it also appears to be far beyond a "what if" situation.

Pushing Daisies ran for two truncated seasons on ABC from 2007 to 2009 and followed the story of Ned the Piemaker (Lee Pace), who had the ability to bring the dead back to life with a touch, an ability he used to solve murders. At the same time, Ned also ran his pastry shop, The Pie Hole. Co-starring with Pace on the show were Kristen Chenoweth, Chi McBride and Anna Friel.

It was, I can honestly say, one of the most unusual shows on TV at the time, possibly ever. What I love about the show is its light and whimsical tone, which (very intentionally) clashes with its weekly murder mystery storylines. I suppose someone could argue that that oddness is what led to both its early cancellation and its cult status among fans.

One key element that's seemingly missing and needed for Pushing Daisies Season 3 to become a reality is a place for it to air. While the original series ran on ABC, the show was produced by Warner Bros. All 22 episodes of the show can currently be seen with an HBO Max subscription.

A return to ABC seems unlikely after so much time has passed, but this wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a series revived by a streaming platform after a long hiatus. I'm hoping this one gets the Piemaker's touch and comes back to life very soon.

Listen, there are always going to be TV cancellations people are personally mad about. Every show has a fanbase of some sort, and there's probably never been a TV cancellation that at least a few people weren't sad about in their heart of hearts. However, while some shows quietly go the way of the dinosaur, some of them actually have a slew of passionate fans who are deeply upset and extremely vocal when a show goes by the wayside.

These are some of these shows.

NCIS: Hawai’i (2024) 

It’s safe to say fans were not happy about NCIS: Hawai’i’s cancelation. The first female-fronted series in the franchise also had a great ensemble cast and a gorgeous setting. Given the longevity of most shows in this franchise, people were surprised and not pleased when the CBS decision came down. A "#saveNCISHawaii" hashtag was started, but all for naught.

Hannibal (2015)

NBC's spicy take on Hannibal Lector lasted for three seasons and was ultimately canceled due to low viewership. However, the show had developed a passionate fanbase, and that fanbase has only grown over time. In fact, as of the last couple of years, the fan campaign to #SaveHannibal is still ongoing, which is wild given the show was cancelled nearly a decade ago.

Jericho (2007 And 2008)

Jericho was amazingly canceled not once, but twice, on CBS. The show was cut after its first season due to low ratings. Fans went "nutty," as one outlet wrote at the time, and mailed thousands of pounds of peanuts to the network. It was an early fan campaign to pitch a renewal, but sadly it only temporarily worked. Jericho was canceled a second time in 2008 after its shortened second season aired.

Glow (2020)

Glow was a big loss for fans, mostly because the show about female wrestlers had gotten a big renewal. Netflix reversed its decision after months of no filming during the pandemic, and fans were, of course, not pleased. It wasn't the only casualty of 2020, but it was the most notable, given its longevity (it was heading into Season 4) and its renewal reversal.

Pushing Daisies (2009)

There hasn't been a show quite like Pushing Daisies any time before or after. The quirky ABC series followed a pie maker who could reanimate the dead. Even before the era where fan petitions were in vogue, people were hoping the drama would make a comeback. Years later, people are still pining over it.

Mindhunter (2019)

Originally it was unclear if Mindhunter was canceled or in some sort of limbo, but once it became clear Netflix had said goodbye to the series due to its cost relative to its audience, people were not pleased. It may have been too small a number for one of the biggest and best streaming services to continue, but a slew of disappointed threads sprung up. Fans are still bummed.

Star Trek (1969)

There are some shows that manage to build such a dedicated fanbase that they'll push as hard as they can to keep a show on the air. Such was the case with the original Star Trek, which was canceled after Season 2. Fans actually wrote a slew of letters asking CBS to bring it back, a protest happened at Caltech, and the show ultimately earned a Season 3 renewal, spawning the franchise fans know and love today.

Deadwood (2006)

One of several HBO shows that fans felt was canceled far too soon, Deadwood's cast was stacked and featured some amazing performances from Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane and writing from David Milch. The show was acclaimed during the three seasons it aired, and was canceled unexpectedly. For years, people asked about what a fourth season would look like and finally this became one cancelation with a happy ending as Deadwood: The Movie aired in 2019.

Agent Carter (2016)

People love Peggy Carter, and they love Hayley Atwell's portrayal of the Marvel character. So, when ABC announced they were giving Peggy her own series, it seemed like a fun side project in the Marvel timeline and a cool period drama to boot. It was those things, but airing on network TV was maybe not the best fit. ABC tried to run the series during mid-season breaks of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D, but it didn't garner enough eyeballs. Agent Carter was canceled after two seasons. An impressive more than 70,000 people petitioned to keep the show, but ultimately you need more viewers to stick around on network TV.

Arrested Development (2006 And 2019)

Fox's Arrested Development was the quirky comedy that could during its time on the air, and after it got canceled it only grew in popularity. Over time, buzz grew about a desire to finish the story, and in a surprise move, Netflix brought the series back. People weren't as pumped about the new episodes, and the second time it was canceled with little fanfare in 2019.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2019)

In the mid-aughts, TV went on a tear of musical productions, with shows like Smash, Galavant and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend hitting the airwaves. What most had in common? They didn't last super long. Among these productions, however, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend notably lasted four seasons despite low ratings. It's a show that only grew later, and fans have been coming across it for years and lamenting it didn't last longer.

Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman (1997)

Lois & Clark is a bit of a weird one. Originally planned for 5 seasons, ABC actually paid Warner Bros. to get out of the contract and only air one of a planned two-season contract at the end of the show's run. Fans were shaken up at the time the show was canceled as it dropped from a solidly-rated series to one in contention for cancelation faster than a speeding bullet. Oddly, it's a story that would be repeated with Superman & Lois years later.

Santa Clarita Diet (2019)

Timothy Olyphant called Santa Clarita Diet the perfect "zom-com" after it got canceled, but even creating a new genre of storytelling wasn't enough to save the Netflix series. Years later, a viral Twitter thread continued the dialogue about how heartbroken fans were about this one.

Firefly (2002)

Firefly hit cult status after its cancelation by Fox in the early aughts. The series was beloved by fans at conventions, many of whom wrote letters and reportedly even took out an ad in Variety to save the show. It paid off in Serenity in 2005, but the original series never made a comeback.

Happy Endings (2013)

Happy Endings was conceived to be a modern follow-up to Friends, but it didn't have quite the same fairytale run. In fact, ABC messed with the schedule on this series so much it made it hard in the time of linear viewing for fans who loved the show to keep up, and many were unhappy when the sitcom was axed in 2013. Fans wrote complaints and many outlets wrote articles after the fact about the treatment of the series, citing it as the reason it lacked success.

Cagney & Lacey (1982 And 1988)

A show about two female cops was groundbreaking in the early eighties. Unfortunately, CBS canceled it after just six episodes. The cancelation led to protests after an executive made some comments about the way the female leads were perceived and it sparked major backlash and protests. CBS ultimately reversed its decision and the show ran for seven seasons, and went on to win 36 Emmy nominations and 14 wins.

Forever (2014)

Sometimes a show does pretty well with viewers but ends up on the cancelation bubble and ultimately gets dropped. Ioan Gruffudd's Forever is a classic example of this. Airing on ABC in 2014, the show followed a seemingly-immortal medical examiner and was loved by its fanbase (particularly globally), though critics were mixed. When Forever got canceled, it was one of the early shows to grow a cancelation fanbase on Twitter thanks to creator Matt Miller's regular updates. Unfortunately, it didn't come back.

The OA (2019)

A lot of times when Netflix cancels shows it's after only one season. The OA was a different case. Landing two seasons before its ultimate cancelation, the sci-fi series had an avid fanbase who were upset the streamer said goodbye. After it got dropped, a #SaveTheOA was launched on social media, including petition signing, fan videos, and fans even trying to rope Hilary Duff into the movement.

Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip (2007)

Aaron Sorkin's follow-up to The West Wing was hotly anticipated, and people were really excited about the fictional plot, which followed a late night series akin to SNL. At the time there were high hopes it would get an elongated run, but it only made it one season before getting the axe. Its fanbase grew over time, and years later the show attracted renewed notice following lead Matthew Perry's death. Its legacy is as a critically acclaimed series that was gone too soon.

Rome (2007)

Rome was extremely popular during its short two-season stint on HBO. So why did it get canceled? High production costs were later cited as the reason, but fans were not remotely pleased. This is particularly true given the show had a clear five-season arc planned.

Reaper (2007 and 2009)

Reaper was one of the casualties of the 2007 writer's strike, but fans of The CW series weren't having it. Many of them actually sent socks to the network at actor Tyler Labine's behest (his character's name was Socks) in order to get the powers that be to reconsider. It worked. The show got a second season, then was ultimately canceled again. Still, the socks stand out as one of the most notable fan campaigns in TV memory.

FlashForward (2010)

FlashForward was a show about people losing consciousness for more than two minutes and flashing into the future. The Season 1 finale was shot before the show was canceled, which meant it ended on another flashforward into the future. Fans actually planned a "mass blackout" in major cities across the U.S. to protest the cancelation in which they passed out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds, mimicking the series, to protest the show's demise.

Futurama (So Many Times)

Fun fact: Futurama wasn't even officially canceled during the show's first run on Fox. Instead, the network was so disrespectful of the show that it erratically aired the series until they pawned it off in reruns on Comedy Central. But the history of Futurama is a long and storied one. The show grew and grew in syndication. Fans started writing pieces about how great the animated comedy was. It was eventually revived not once -- but twice -- on Comedy Central and, more recently, Hulu.

Everwood (2006)

Nowadays, fans just sign petitions and create hashtags if they want a show to stick around. But a couple of decades ago, fans got a whole lot more creative. After Everwood -- a launching pad for Emily VanCamp and Chris Pratt's careers -- got canceled by the WB, fans actually rented a Ferris Wheel and set it up on the WB lot in protest. Tragically, this didn't work.

My Lady Jane (2024)

It's rare that a series combines real-life history and fantasy, and none has perhaps been quirkier than My Lady Jane. The Amazon series got off to a hot start in 2024 with good reviews, but the viewership apparently wasn't there. After the show was canceled, a slew of petitions formed and hashtags gained traction.

Lucifer (2018 And 2021)

Tom Ellis originated his role as the titular Lucifer Morningstar when Lucifer hit Fox in 2016. It was canceled three seasons later and people were not pleased. A Save Lucifer campaign led the show to Netflix and it worked out swimmingly. The show was able to wrap its run in a more meaningful way, and on Netflix, Ellis and co. were free to be more delightfully devilish.

Shadow & Bone (2023)

Shadow & Bone was yet another casualty of the strikes, but the decision came quite late in 2023. It was a shock decision given the show had been the 10th most Googled series that year. Some Netflix fans claimed they canceled the service and even cited the news the show had been "unceremoniously canceled" as the reason.

The Jetsons (1962) (More Eps Produced Later)

The history of The Jetsons is one of the more interesting of all time. The animated series was canceled after only one season, but it was the love from young folk that helped it to become an animated classic later on. It actually ran in syndication for decades and then in the late 1980s, another run of cartoons was produced. The Jetsons: The Movie serves as a finale for the long-running series.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2018 And 2020)

B-99 was a fan-favorite on Fox for years, but ultimately got the axe after six seasons. The fanbase was not pleased and spoke out on social media, leading to NBC picking up the show for not an additional one, but two seasons. It was a bad year for comedy cancelations with The Mick and Last Man Standing getting axed, but this was one piece of relatively good news, at least until the show was canceled a second time.

Family Guy (2002)

Family Guy has been a TV staple for so long, it's easy to forget it was actually canceled for several years. It was fans going the extra mile to purchase DVDs that led to the show getting a second chance on Fox and it's been on the air since that date.

Sense 8 (2017) (A Special Came Later)

Fans did not hold back their feelings after Netflix canceled The Wachowski's Sense8 after two seasons, making noise and creating a slew of hashtags including #NoSense8NoNetflix. The chatter was so loud, the creative team around the series actually crafted a statement asking fans to remain calm, but it worked. The streamer allowed a two-part special to be crafted to wrap the series up.

Star Trek: Prodigy (2023)

The Star Trek series is a bit of an outlier. First, Season 2 was already coming together and even had a release date when it got canceled by Paramount. It was popular with fans. It was a Voyager successor series and even Anson Mount got involved in the fan campaign. Netflix eventually aired both seasons.

If not absorbing storylines and appealing characters, what is it that keeps us coming back to tune into our favorite TV shows week after week, season after season? It could be the way some episodes end with a shocking final moment right before fading to black, leaving us in eager anticipation to see the mystery revealed or, at least, what comes next. Let’s take a look back at some of television’s most iconic cliffhangers that had the world buzzing.

The Finale (The Sopranos)

One of the most controversial series finales of all time is the final episode of The Sopranos, “Made in America,” which ends with the titular family meeting at a diner where Tony (James Gandolfini) looks up to see who has entered the restaurant right as it cuts to black. This non-ending, so to speak, launched countless fan theories regarding what happens next — such as, did the patron who entered the restaurant kill Tony? — but creator David Chase has never conceded to provide a concrete explanation.

Hank Discovers Walt Is Heisenberg (Breaking Bad)

The jaw-dropping ending to one of the best episodes of Breaking Bad, Season 5’s “Gliding Over All,” sees Hank Schrader (Dean Norris) using Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Skyler’s (Anna Gunn) restroom, where he comes across a copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass given to Walt by Heisenberg’s one-time partner, Gale Boetticher (David Costabile). The look on the DEA agent’s face, when he realizes the elusive criminal he had been chasing for so long is his own brother-in-law, is priceless, but it would be another year before viewers could see the hunt really begin.

The Mother Of Dragons (Game Of Thrones)

One of the most memorable moments from Game of Thrones occurs in the first season finale, “Fire and Blood,” in which Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) emerges from the embers of a burning pyre, accompanied by three infant fire-breathers. This ends the first season of the prestige drama on a captivating note and marks the beginning of the fan-favorite character’s reign as the Mother of Dragons.

Ross Says Rachel's Name At His Wedding (Friends)

The Friends cast endures a few amusing plot twists in the Season 4 finale — such as the start of Monica and Chandler’s romance — but the biggest surprise occurred at the very end during Ross’ (David Schwimmer) nuptials to Emily (Helen Baxendale). When the officiant asks him to repeat, “Take thee, Emily…” he instead says the name of ex-girlfriend, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), who had initially appeared at the venue last minute wanting to ruin the wedding. This, of course, marks the beginning of the end of his second marriage.

Dale Cooper’s Doppelganger (Twin Peaks)

No cliffhanger from creators David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks perplexed and unsettled audiences like the Season 2 finale, when it is revealed that Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle McLachlan) is still lost in The Black Lodge and has been replaced with an evil look-alike. Just as Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) foretells the real Cooper in the episode, it would be another 25 before fans got to see the story continue in Showtime’s Twin Peaks revival in 2017.

"Resistance Is Futile" (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

One of the most iconic moments in the Star Trek franchise comes from the Season 3 finale of The Next Generation when the U.S.S. Enterprise-D crew discovers Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) has been transformed into a Borg named Locutus. Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) then orders an attack on the enemy's ship before the scene cuts to a caption reading, "To be continued..."

Who Did Negan Kill? (The Walking Dead)

The Season 6 finale of The Walking Dead introduced the most fearsome villain from Robert Kirkman's comic, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who establishes his dominance by choosing one series regular to kill by use of "Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe." Before it fades to black, we see the murder occur from the perspective of the victim, who is revealed to be Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) in the Season 7 premiere, in which Glenn (Steven Yeun) is also fatally bludgeoned by Negan's barbed baseball bat, Lucille.

"We Have To Go Back!" (Lost)

Many believe Season 3's "Through the Looking Glass" is the best episode of Lost, primarily for the way it ends the season. It is revealed that the supposed flashbacks of Jack Shepard (Matthew Fox) off the island were really flash-forwards when he tells Kate (Evangeline Lilly) that they must return to the place they had seemingly escaped at some point.

Dexter Discovers Rita's Body (Dexter)

Many fans agree the best season of Dexter is its fourth, especially for the upsetting way it ends when Michael C. Hall's titular, homicidal anti-hero discovers he did not get rid of his worst enemy, The Trinity Killer (John Lithgow), soon enough. He returns home to find his wife, Rita (Julie Benz), dead in their bathtub and their infant son, Harrison, sitting in a puddle of her blood.

Who Shot J.R.? (Dallas)

When it comes to TV cliffhangers, there is absolutely nothing more iconic than the Season 3 finale of Dallas (one of the top-rated TV shows of its time), which ends with Larry Hagman's double-crossing oil baron, J.R. Ewing, getting shot by an unknown assailant. For the entire summer of 1980, audiences all over the country obsessed over who shot J.R. before it was revealed to be Kristin Shepard (Mary Crosby) in the Season 4 premiere.

The Upside Down Spills Into Hawkins (Stranger Things)

Every season of Stranger Things has ended with a hint at the Hawkins Crew's next adventure, but none has been more epic than Season 4's final moment. The gang realizes that their war against Vecna is far from over as the cold, dusty world of the Upside Down begins to mend with their dimension.

Addison Is Introduced (Grey's Anatomy)

In its first year, one of the most appealing elements of Grey's Anatomy was Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) blossoming romance, which was derailed by an amusing reveal in the season finale. Meredith discovers that she is McDreamy's mistress when she meets his wife, Addison (Kate Walsh).

Buffy Sacrifices Herself (Buffy The Vampire Slayer)

The title of Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Season 5 finale (and 100th episode overall), "The Gift," refers to the titular hero (Sarah Michelle Gellar) giving her life to save Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg) and the world by jumping into a portal and stopping a release of demons. The final shot of her tombstone left fans heartbroken until the Season 6 announcement convinced them that they had not seen the last of the Slayer after all.

"Who's Been Hit?" (The West Wing)

The first season of Aaron Sorkin's hit political drama ended with a shocking assassination attempt, leaving viewers in the dark over who from the West Wing cast may have succumbed to the violence. The Season 2 premiere revealed that President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford) were shot but, thankfully, both survived.

Rachel's Pregnancy Is Revealed (Friends)

The most shocking Friends cliffhangers seem to happen in season-ending wedding episodes, like in "The One with Monica and Chandler's Wedding," during which Pheobe (Lisa Kudrow) assumes the bride (Courteney Cox) is pregnant after finding a pregnancy test in her apartment. However, after Monica assures Chandler (Matthew Perry) that she is not with the child, a final close-up of a visibly concerned Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) hints she is the expectant mother.

Marissa Shoots Trey (The O.C.)

The second season of The O.C. ends with Marissa (Mischa Barton) shooting Trey (Logan Marshall-Green) to prevent him from killing his brother, Ryan (Ben McKenzie), after he confronts him about trying to take advantage of Marissa. The buzzed-about cliffhanger served as the inspiration for a hilarious SNL Digital Short that especially took aim at the scenes use of Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek."

Jim And Pam’s First Kiss (The Office)

One of the most epic moments in Jim and Pam's relationship timeline on The Office takes place in the Season 2 ender "Casino Night." We would have to wait until Season 3 to learn the aftermath of Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fisher) sharing a kiss after he reveals his true feelings for her.

Blowing Open The Hatch (Lost)

The mysteries surrounding the island from Lost only got more intriguing by the end of its first season when Locke (Terry O'Quinn), Jack, Kate, and Hurley (Jorge Garcia) finally got the hatch open with a bundle of dynamite. However, Hurley tried to stop the explosion after noticing his unlucky lottery numbers etched on the side of the hatch, suggesting that only more trouble might be brewing underneath.

Sherlock Jumps From A Building (Sherlock)

In the second season finale of the modern reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous character, Sherlock, Sherlock Holmes' (Benedict Cumberbatch) rivalry with Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) comes to a head when the foe takes his own life and the detective seemingly does the same by jumping from the roof where their showdown took place. Of course, as the final shot of the episode confirms, the reports of Sherlock's death are greatly exaggerated, but how he survived the fall is not revealed for another year and and half.

Who Shot Mr. Burns? (The Simpsons)

The Simpsons (one of the all-time greatest animated TV shows) would take aim at Dallas' most iconic cliffhanger when the sixth season finale ended with Mr. Burns (Harry Shearer) getting shot by an unknown assailant. After a summer break, the following episode revealed that Homer and Marge's infant daughter, Maggie, was the culprit, and may have done it intentionally.

The Abrupt Finale (Pushing Daisies)

A cliffhanger that never received a proper resolution was at the Season 2 finale of Pushing Daisies, which sees Ned (Lee Pace) and Chuck (Anna Friel) show up at her aunt's doorstep to reveal she is alive. After ABC canceled the fantasy dramedy after two seasons, showrunner Bryan Fuller was forced to add a brief epilogue to provide some closure to the characters' arc, but it still left fans unsatisfied.

Rory Reveals She Is Pregnant (Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life)

In 2016, Netflix revived Gilmore Girls for a four-episode limited series event called Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, which follows the further experiences of Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and her daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel), over the course of four eventful seasons. The final line of the final episode comes from Rory, confessing to her mother that she is having a baby.

The Death Of Jon Snow (Game Of Thrones)

Out of all the many deaths on Game of Thrones, one of the most shocking and devastating comes at the end of the Season 5 finale when Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) is assassinated by his own men. However, Fans would be delighted to see him resurrected the following season.

Jesse Shoots Gale (Breaking Bad)

One of the most mind-blowing Breaking Bad moments occurs at the end of Season 3 when a doomed Walt (Bryan Cranston) tricks Mike (Jonathan Banks) into letting him call Jesse (Aaron Paul), alerting him to kill Walt's intended replacement, Gale. While the act would save Walt's life, this was the first time the young man had ever killed someone and it would haunt him for a long time.

Helly Tells The Truth (Severance)

The Apple TV+ original TV show Severance takes place at a tech company that surgically separates its employees' personal memories from their memories at the office. In the Season 1 finale, Helly (Britt Lower), after discovering she is the daughter of Lumon's CEO, decides to reveal the miserable truth behind this process at a business gala at the same time Mark (Adam Scott) discovers that his supposed dead wife is the company's wellness counselor, Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman). Just then, they reverted back to their "innie" form before the episode cuts to black.

Kima Greggs Gets Shot (The Wire)

In the final moment from the 10th episode of The Wire's first season, a bust gone wrong results in Kima Greggs (Sonja Sohn) getting shot. That would have been the end of the character who was meant to have a smaller role had HBO executive Carolyn Strauss not convinced creator David Simon to keep her around longer.

Zoey Gets Kidnapped (The West Wing)

In the penultimate episode of The West Wing's fourth season, it is discovered that First Daughter Zoey Bartlet (Elisabeth Moss) went missing at her graduation party. The season ended with Zoey still missing and President Bartlett stepping aside temporarily. The event echoes a premonition from the first season in which President Bartlet tells his daughter that no crisis would be worse than her kidnapping.

Mulder Vanishes From The Boxcar (The X-Files)

In the Season 2 finale of The X-Files, "Anasazi," Mulder (David Duchovny) finds a box car buried under a quarry full of alien bodies with smallpox vaccine scars, which he discovers right as the roof hatch is closed. When the Smoking Man arrives, he discovers Mulder is somehow gone and then orders for the boxcar to be destroyed, leaving fans wondering if and how the FBI agent managed to get away safely.

Logan's True Intentions Are Revealed (24)

As a series told in real-time, just about every episode of 24 ended with some sort of a cliffhanger, and one of the best comes at the end of the 16th episode of Season 5. A phone call with Christopher Henderson (Peter Weller) reveals that President Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin) was the true orchestrator between the deaths of David Palmer and Michelle Dessler.

Who Shot Agent Cooper? (Twin Peaks)

At the very end of the first season of Twin Peaks, Special Agent Dale Cooper returns to his room at the Great Northern Hotel and, after answering a knock at the door, is shot by an unknown shooter. Thankfully, he survives and it is later revealed that the assailant was Josie Packard (Joan Chen).

Junior Shoots Tony (The Sopranos)

The Season 6 premiere of The Sopranos ends with Tony (James Gandolfini) being shot by his own uncle, Junior (Dominic Chianese), who mistook him for a long-dead mobster who robbed him years earlier. Tony struggles to call 911 but, as soon as he gets ahold of them, he passes out before the screen fades to black.

Miguel’s School Fight Injury (Cobra Kai)

In the Season 2 finale for Cobra Kai, a fight breaks out between several rival high school students from the rival dojos but ends when Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) is kicked by Robby (Tanner Buchanan) over a balcony and lands on a stairway guardrail. It would be revealed later that the injury left him paralyzed but, luckily, only for a few episodes of Season 3.

Thanks especially to streaming, there are so many options on the TV schedule when it comes to what to watch, so when audiences tune into a series, they often are fully committed. That makes it all the harder when those shows inevitably come to an end. We’ve seen some pretty brutal TV cancellations in 2024 — including Station 19 ending after seven seasons and Our Flag Means Death getting the ax after two — but it’s the absolute worst when a series ends unexpectedly. Some fans opened up about their biggest TV cancellation heartbreaks, and man, these are rough.

One Redditor posed the question to TV fans: What series broke your heart because you didn’t get a proper ending? I expected to see many of the responses. My Name Is Earl, for instance, famously ended on an unresolved cliffhanger, and Freaks and Geeks’ cancellation after one season seems to be one of the most baffling decisions in TV history. But commenters hit the nail on the head with some of these choices.

Pushing Daisies

A prime example of a series that didn’t last long enough to finish its story is Pushing Daisies, which aired for two seasons on ABC. Redditors seemed to agree that a decade and a half after its cancellation, the pain of not knowing what came of Lee Pace’s Ned and his incredible power to bring people back to life has not faded. Said AshBliss:

Netflix has a nasty habit of canceling series after just one season, and one victim of that was 2022’s Archive 81. This was a real bummer considering how many creepy moments Archive 81 supplied, and as Redditor Lukewarm_Ambition76 said:

Santa Clarita Diet

OK, this one hurts. Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant absolutely (and literally) killed on Santa Clarita Diet, which ran for three seasons on Netflix. Throw in one can’t-miss Nathan Fillion recurring appearance, and tempers were starting to flare amongst the Reddit crowd, who wrote:

Also, the awkward dynamic between Liv Hewson’s Abby and Skyler Gisondo’s Eric gave me life, and I’d take more of that in an undead heartbeat. Its three seasons can be streamed on Netflix.

Better Off Ted

For as many comedies that are out there, it’s not as easy to find a good one to latch onto as you’d hope. That’s why losing ABC’s Better Off Ted after two seasons was so devastating to viewers. Jay Harrington starred as single dad Ted, as well as Portia de Rossi and Andrea Anders as two of his colleagues at Veridian Dynamics. But let’s be real, we were all really tuning into the workplace comedy for Lem and Phil, right? Bezbozny wrote:

Better Off Ted isn’t currently available to stream but can be purchased on sites like Amazon’s Prime Video and Apple TV+.

We may not be getting any resolution on our favorite series that ended too soon, but thanks to some of the best streaming services like those listed above, we can still relive the good times.

For as much as fans like to complain about disappointing series finales — such as the Game of Thrones ending or the confusing conclusion of Lost, to name a couple — at least those TV shows can say they had the opportunity to have their final curtain call on their own terms. There are even more TV shows cancelled way too soon that were unable to complete their stories as intended and the following are some of the most notable examples.

Agent Carter (2015-2016)

Before Marvel TV shows were available with a Disney+ subscription, ABC was the home of series like Agent Carter, which followed the adventures of Hayley Atwell’s covert operative in the 1940s. Unfortunately, the series only lasted two seasons because, as Atwell told The AV Club, the network wanted to put the actor in something more “mainstream.” At least we got to see more of Peggy Carter in subsequent MCU movies and the animated anthology series, What If…?

Archive 81 (2022)

One of many, many examples of prematurely canceled Netflix TV shows you will see on this list is Archive 81, which ended on a shocking cliffhanger that had fans itching for more. Unfortunately, the mysteries surrounding that finale will be left unanswered by the horror series’ cancellation after one season. Plus, fans won’t find the closure they seek in the podcast it is based on, which ended its own first season in a much different way.

Ash Vs. Evil Dead (2015-2018) 

Bruce Campbell retired his most iconic character, Ash Williams, after Starz chainsawed this continuation of the Evil Dead movies after three seasons. According to Bloody-Disgusting, there were plans to build off of the Ash vs. Evil Dead finale’s apocalyptic cliffhanger for a Mad Max-style fourth season.

DC's Legends Of Tomorrow (2016-2022)

After seven seasons, acclaimed DC TV show, Legends of Tomorrow, was unexpectedly given the boot, much to the dismay of the cast, crew and fans, as EW reported in 2022. The time-traveling Arrowverse series left on a cliffhanger that saw the live-action debut of Booster Gold.

The Event (2010-2011)

What is The Event? We’ll never know for sure because NBC took this sci-fi thriller — starring Jason Ritter and Blair Underwood — out of orbit after one season due to low ratings, as Deadline reported. According to Assignment X, there was talk of wrapping up its mysterious story — about a conspiracy involving aliens — with a SyFy original movie that never happened.

Firefly (2002-2003)

In one of the most heartbreaking instances of a TV show ending too soon, Firefly was cancelled by Fox after 11 episodes, being a victim of an unfavorable time slot, a mixed-up episode order, a misleading marketing strategy, etc. While the 2005 feature-length spin-off film, Serenity, provided some closure, fans remain unsatisfied, knowing what great potential this clever fusion of a cosmic setting with western themes had.

First Kill (2022) 

This intriguing series based on a Romeo & Juliet-esque short story with a twist involving vampires and LGBQT+ themes only lasted one season on Netflix. First Kill showrunner Felicia P. Henderson told The Daily Beast that she believes the marketing — which downplayed the series’ supernatural elements in favor of highlighting its core teen romance — hindered its potential to gain more interest.

Forever (2014-2015)

ABC’s Forever turned out to be misnomer, as this crime drama starring Ioan Gruffudd as an immortal medical examiner met an early demise due to low ratings. Creator Matt Miller later revealed on Twitter (via TV Line) plans he had for Season 2, which included delving into the main character’s family history, hints that he inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to create Sherlock Holmes, etc. 

Freaks And Geeks (1999-2000)

There had never been a teen TV comedy quite like Freaks and Geeks, which was expelled by NBC after suffering bad time slots and fierce competition for 12 episodes (out of the 18 that were filmed). However, it spawned a stunning legacy, inspiring coming-of-age TV dramedies since and jumpstarting the stellar careers of the Freaks and Geeks cast. 

The Get Down (2016-2017)

According to Esquire, Netflix declined to comment on exactly why The Get Down became the platform’s first original series to be cancelled after just one season. However, co-creator Baz Luhrmann would share in a Facebook post that the stylish dramatization of hip-hop's roots would not continue in part because of his commitment to his next feature-length effort, which turned out to be Elvis. 

The Glades (2010-2013)

The Glades had a Season 4 finale similar to Dallas’ iconic Season 3 cliffhanger, in which the main character gets shot. However, Dallas was actually given to opportunity to reveal who shot J.R. Ewing, but Jim Longworth’s shooter would remain unknown since A&E would cancel the acclaimed crime procedural. TVLine reported that Matt Passmore — who led the show as the Chicago-based cop transferred to the Everglades — claimed he knew the shooter’s identity, but was unable to say at the time.

Hannibal (2013-2015)

Developer Bryan Fuller’s reinterpretation of author Thomas Harris’ epic crime saga had a Season 3 finale similar to the ending of Thelma & Louise — Mads Mikkelsen’s Hannibal Lecter and Hugh Dancy’s Will Graham lunge themselves off the side of a cliff in each other’s arms — but with less satisfying results. Since NBC pulled the plug, Hannibal fans have since been hungry for a fourth season, which Dancy told Collider he would be open to, but adds it would be unlikely due to the financial cost.

Heels (2021-2023)

Stephen Amell followed his long tenure leading the Arrow cast by starring in this drama offering an inside-look at the professional wrestling word that Starz tossed out of the ring in 2023. Showrunner Mike O’Malley shared with EW his ideas for Heels Season 3 if the series wer find a new home.

Heroes (2006-2010)

Despite its stellar debut, EW reported that Heroes was on a steady decline in viewership before NBC sealed its downfall after four seasons. While the acclaimed twist on comic book lore series would continue in 2015 in the the form of Heroes Reborn, even that was cancelled and was ultimately dubbed a “limited series revival,” according to TV By the Numbers.

How I Met Your Father (2022-2023)

Fans were not happy that Hulu cancelled How I Met Your Father before it could confirm the identity of the man Hilary Duff’s Sophie was destined to marry. At least it lasted longer than the previous attempt at a gender-swapped How I Met Your Mother spin-off, which never made it past the unaired pilot.

I Am Not Okay With This (2020)

Showrunner Jonathan Entwistle was certainly not okay with Netflix axing his adaptation of Charles S. Forsman’s graphic novel, I Am Not Okay With This, due to the Covid-19-related costs, apparently. According to Insider, the plan was to complete the story of a 17-year-old discovering she has special powers in two seasons, only to learn it would be not renewed after the scripts were written.

Joan Of Arcadia (2003-2005)

While critics likely prayed to see it continue, CBS opted not to renew Joan of Arcadia for a third season. According to EW, the Emmy nominated series starring Amber Tamblyn as teenager visited by God in human form suffered a major ratings slump in its sophomore run.

Julie And The Phantoms (2020) 

The supernatural musical series, Julie and the Phantoms, ended it first season on a spooky cliffhanger that raised questions which will never be resolved, unfortunately. According to MovieWeb, Netflix pulled the plug on the show — following an aspiring teen musician and her three ghostly bandmates — because it failed to appeal to its target demographic, despite proving popular among viewers 18 and older.

The Last Man On Earth (2015-2018)

After four seasons, star and creator Will Forte’s post-apocalyptic comedy, The Last Man on Earth, ended with a bizarre cliffhanger in which a large group of unidentified survivors in gas masks emerge from an underground bunker. The former SNL cast member shared with Vulture’s Good Ones podcast his plan to explain who those people were and how the story would evolve from there.

A League Of Their Own (2022)

Based on one of the best sports movies of all time, A League of the Their Own was also a fresh take on the true story of the World War II professional women’s baseball league. Despite its acclaim, it struck out with Amazon, which suddenly and shockingly cancelled it after one season.

Lockwood & Co. (2023) 

Mere months after it premiered, Netflix exorcised the inventive supernatural mystery thriller, Lockwood & Co., which based its first season on the first two books of the five-part series that inspired it. Fans of the show — which followed a group of teen ghost hunters in London — petitioned for its revival after it was cancelled.

The Midnight Club (2022)

Most of Mike Flanagan’s best shows have been limited series, which is why it was a surprise when his adaptation of Christopher Pike’s novel, The Midnight Club, ended with a tease at a second season. When Netflix chose not to renew the heartbreaking coming-of-age horror series, Flanagan posted his plans for Season 2 in full detail on his Tumblr blog.

My Name Is Earl (2005-2009)

Despite literally ending Season 4 with a “To Be Continued” caption, NBC opted not to continue My Name is Earl. Ethan Suplee, who played Earl’s brother, Randy Hickey, explained on the Slick and Thick podcast (via TikTok), that the network refused to give Fox (which owned the property) more money to license the show for another year. He then shared that the series finale would have revealed that Jason Lee’s titular reformed criminal was the unwitting catalyst of an entire movement of people making lists of amends.

Revolution (2012-2014) 

According to Deadline, the lights went out on Revolution — set in a post-apocalytpic future without electricity — after its long hiatus between its first and second seasons on NBC caused a dip in popularity. Creator Eric Kripke later told Buddy TV he envisioned Season 3 as a treasure hunting adventure, which — as THR reports — was adapted into a four-part digital DC comic in 2015.

Santa Clarita Diet (2017-2019)

The Season 3 finale of Santa Clarita Diet saw Drew Barrymore’s undead real estate agent Sheila Hammond take a bite of her husband, Joel, played by Timothy Olyphant. What major changes that cliffhanger might have led to remain a mystery since Netflix buried the funny, inventive take on zombie lore, reportedly due to increasing production costs, according to Deadline.

The Secret Circle (2011-2012)

Despite being the network’s third highest-rated series at the time, The Secret Circle was cursed with cancellation after just one season on The CW. According to CBR, it was on a steady decline in viewership since its premiere that led to the teen supernatural fantasy’s premature demise, despite a cliffhanger season finale.

The Society (2019) 

Also one of the best Natasha Liu Bordizzo TV shows, The Society — which followed a group of teens mysteriously cut off from the rest of the world — was cut off from continuing its story in a second season. Creator Christopher Keyser shared with Variety how upsetting the “abrupt” cancellation of the Lord of the Flies-esque sci-fi series was after spending months preparing for the second season.

Southland (2009-2013)

Acclaimed cop drama Southland was cancelled right before its second season aired on NBC, but was picked up soon after by TNT, which would eventually drop the series after Season 5. EW later reported that there were talks of a movie that would resolve a cliffhanger in which Michael Cudlitz’s John Cooper gets shot, but nothing came to fruition.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (2008-2009)

One of the best shows Fox should be embarrassed about cancelling is Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which deviated from the initial Terminator movies’ canon in ways that fans and critics responded well to. Unfortunately, the sci-fi series met an untimely fate when it was cancelled after its second season suffered a significant drop in ratings.

Pushing Daisies (2007-2009) 

A beloved romantic-comedy series that ended too soon was Pushing Daisies, which starred Lee Pace as a baker with the ability to bring people back from dead by touching them, but only once. If only the quirky, creative, multi-Emmy-nominated show could be brought back from the dead so fans could see where the story was meant to go past its two season on ABC.

Warrior Nun (2020-2022)

Based on a popular comic book, Warrior Nun fell victim to Netflix’s habit of cancelling some of its most acclaimed series after its second season dropped to less than half its average viewership just three weeks after it premiered, according to Variety. 

The Wilds (2020-2022)

Despite being praised as one of the best Amazon Prime original TV shows, the coming-of-age survival drama, The Wilds, did not survive past a second season at Amazon. ComicBook.com later reported that fans voiced their disappointment that the cliffhanger season finale would go unresolved.

These TV shows were not here for a long time, but it was a good time while they lasted.

Who doesn’t love settling down on the couch to watch a light-hearted romantic comedy in 22-minute segments? Well, apparently, pretty much every major TV network boss. 

It’s nothing new for shows to be cancelled before their time, but some of the most egregious cancellations fall under the category of romantic comedies. 

I’m taking a walk down memory lane and reminiscing over some of the worst heartbreaks I’ve ever had (yes, between me and TV) with this list of the ten greatest romantic comedy TV shows that ended way too soon.

Pushing Daisies (2007-2009)

This early aughts show follows Ned (Lee Pace), a pie-maker with the ability to bring people back from the dead with only his touch. He can also bring fruit back to life, hence the successful pie business. There’s a caveat, though: once he brings someone back to life, he can never touch them again.

Sure, I guess you could call Pushing Daisies a dram-com (dramatic romantic comedy), thanks to the murder cases Ned often solves with his “gift,” but the heart of the story is the love between Ned and Chuck (Anna Friel), his childhood friend and crush whom he brings back to life after an unfortunate accident.

It pains me that we never got to see how this story played out. Chuck and Ned’s forbidden romance only got two seasons on ABC, although the series was nominated for seventeen Emmy Awards during its short run. The show is whimsical, colorful, and dreamy, and definitely worth a rewatch.

A To Z (2014-2015)

This show tells the story of Andrew and Zelda (Get it??? A to Z???) and the timeline of their relationship. NBC cancelled the series in the middle of its first season, however, so we only ever get to see their timeline from about A to M. 

While A to Z didn’t necessarily do anything groundbreaking, it was fun to watch and included great character work from Superstore actor Ben Feldman and co-star Cristin Milioti (of How I Met Your Mother fame).

Selfie (2014)

This sitcom starring John Cho and Karen Gillan was handed a similar fate when it was cancelled mid-season, despite fan support and overall positive reviews.

Selfie is loosely based on My Fair Lady, a reference that seems to have gone over the heads of the execs at ABC. The show was pulled off the air, and the remaining episodes premiered on Hulu.

This one may have been ahead of its time. The social-media crazed Eliza would make much more sense with a 2022 audience, but there’s no denying the chemistry and talent of John Cho and Karen Gillam, who’ve both seen huge success in the years since Selfie’s cancellation.

Happy Endings (2011-2013)

Here we go again, ABC. Happy Endings was canned after only three seasons, despite having all the makings of a buddy-rom-com hit like New Girl or Friends — in fact, the show even jokes about its similarities to Friends. The charismatic cast included Adam Pally, Damon Wayans Jr., Eliza Coupe, Elisha Cuthbert, Zachary Knighton, and Casey Wilson, portraying a group of best friends living in Chicago.

Happy Endings is the perfect example of a show that was written off before it had the chance to realize its full potential. The series was dragged all around to many of ABC’s time slots before meeting its untimely demise in 2013.

The Last Man On Earth (2015-2018)

Will Forte and Kristen Schaal led this post-apocalyptic rom-com about the aftermath of a deadly virus that wiped out most of the human population. Guys, I swear in 2015 that seemed like such a stretch.

Phil (Will Forte) is of course not the last man on earth, which he discovers thanks to the help of Carol (Kristen Schaal). The series devolves into absurdity as the remaining survivors try to rebuild a makeshift society.

The Last Man On Earth made it through four seasons (more than many of the shows on this list) but was cancelled before the show’s creators could carry out their full vision.

Looking (2014-2016)

Depicting the lives of a group of gay friends living in San Francisco, Looking starred Johnathan Groff as Patrick, a 29-year old man dealing with the challenges of love, friendship, family, and self-identity.

Looking has been called the “gay version of Sex and the City,” which is a misleading introduction to the premise of the show and probably played a factor in it’s poor viewership. In reality, Looking was more similar to The L Word in the sense that it portrayed the everyday lives of queer people without the gimmicks and stereotypes a Sex and the City audience would expect.

Looking was cancelled after only two seasons, but Looking: The Movie was released on HBO in 2016 and served as the finale to the story.

Sirens (2014-2015)

Sirens was a match made in heaven: workplace comedy meets rom-com. This series followed three EMTs on their day-to-day adventures working in Chicago. 

Michael Mosley, Kevin Daniels, and Kevin Bigley starred as EMTs Johnny, Hank, and Brian, respectively, with supporting help from Jessica McNamee as Johnny’s police officer ex-girlfriend and Josh Segarra as her new partner.

The show perfectly blended workplace humor, relationships, and medical comedy in a way I’ve never seen before — with a name like Sirens, you’d half expect the show to be a procedural drama about 911 operators. But, Sirens is hilarious and heartfelt, and definitely did not deserve to be axed by USA after only two seasons.

Crashing (2017-2019)

Starring Pete Holmes as a fictional version of himself, Crashing tells the story of an aspiring stand-up comedian whose world is flipped upside down when his wife (Lauren Lapkus) cheats on him.

While Pete's progression as a comedian is a very important part of the story, his journey of self-discovery is even more meaningful. Pete stumbles through finding himself outside of his conservative Christian upbringing and re-entering the dating pool as a newly single man.

One of the best parts of the comedy is Pete's relationship with Ali (Jamie Lee), a fellow comedian, although their relationship hits a roadblock at the end of season two when they argue after competing in a roast battle.

Crashing was cancelled after only three seasons, unfortunately forcing the show's writers to bring Pete and Ali's relationship to a rushed conclusion. The two end up together, but, had the show gotten a fourth season, we could have seen this progress in a way that made more sense.

Miss Guided (2008)

Miss Guided ran for less than a month in 2008 on — you guessed it — ABC. The show followed Becky, a high school guidance counselor working at the same school she graduated from.

Becky (Judy Greer) finds herself trapped again in high-school drama, including crushes, bullies, and teachers from her own days as a student. Greer is lovable and endearing in this show as the quirky and awkward Becky.

Miss Guided might have had a different fate if not for the 2007-2008 writers’ strike, but regardless, the show came to an end after only seven episodes. It’s truly painful that this laugh-out-loud comedy didn’t have the chance to prove itself. 

New Girl (2011-2018)

I know what you’re thinking—New Girl had a respectable run, right? I disagree.

Fox executives made the decision to cancel the show after six seasons, without giving the writers and actors the proper opportunity to bring the story to a meaningful conclusion. Thanks to pleas from the cast and fans—notably, Jake Johnson’s letter to Fox asking for a final season—the show returned for Season 7.

Here’s the thing: since the show’s cancellation, New Girl has arguably become one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. While this is likely thanks in part to the binge-watching that occurred around the world during the pandemic, New Girl has been resurrected as a show people can’t get enough of. 

While the final season of New Girl definitely served as a satisfying conclusion, I think there was still more story to tell here. After seven seasons of Nick and Jess’ will they/won’t they, we deserved more time to watch how their relationship could grow.

It is funny to me how musicals have only recently made a notable comeback on the big screen, yet they have been making a killing on the small screen for a while now. I suppose it helps that the many of the most popular examples on TV these days, such as Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, have a unique and even strange twist to better lure the audience into its song-and-dance schtick. The NBC hit is not the first series to try this and it seems it will not be the last either.

The fun romantic dramedy stars Jane Levy (2013’s Evil Dead by Fede Alvarez, the director's 2016 follow-up Don’t Breathe, and Hulu's Castle Rock) in the title role of a young San Francisco computer programmer who can hear others’ thoughts, but only through elaborate performances of popular songs complete with lavish choreography. While being strange and unique certainly has worked in the series’ favor, of course, not every musical on TV needs a supernatural edge to be popular and not every quirky supernatural comedy needs to be a musical to be a hit either. Therefore, being a fan of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist really just means being a fan of variety.

That being said, there is plenty of variety to be found in the following nine TV shows and three movies we believe share something in common with the magical musical series. So, while you are waiting for Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist to make an eventual, unclear return from its upcoming hiatus, you should have no problem keeping yourself entertained by streaming the content below, starting with the series that first introduced us to its talented star.

Suburgatory (CW Seed)

A sarcastic teenage girl (Jane Levy) is forced to abandon the urban lifestyle she is used to after her single father (Jeremy Sisto) moves her to a new suburban environment.

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: It may not be a musical, a fantasy, or even nearly as sweet as Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, ABC’s Suburgatory quickly made Jane Levy one of the most promising leading ladies on TV upon the sitcom’s 2011 debut and until its 2014 cancellation.

In this 2014 movie, teenage and aspiring musician (Jane Levy) falls for a rock star (Justin Chatswin) stranded in her small town, where a mysterious chemical leak begins to cause horrific transformations for the locals.

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: This 2014 homage of both song-and-dance features and B-grade sci-fi/horror flicks of of the '60s, named after its centerpiece novelty track "Bang Bang Baby," predates Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist as Jane Levy's first starring role in musical fantasy that also plays on her Scream Queen status while it was still in its infancy.

Julie And The Phantoms (Netflix)

A teenage aspiring musician (Madison Reyes) forms a band with a group of young men whose own musical aspirations died years ago... around the same time they did.

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: Inspired by a Brazilian TV series of the name, Julie and the Phantoms is a fun Netflix original series that cleverly combines elements of coming-of-age musical comedy with a ghost story, but more in the vein of Casper.

Deathgasm (Shudder, Amazon Prime, Tubi)

After he is sent to live with his tidy aunt and uncle, a teenage aspiring heavy metal musician (Milo Cawthorne) forms a band with his new friends, who unwittingly unleash the Apocalypse after playing a mysterious composition that puts new meaning "sell your soul for rock 'n roll."

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: For a title like Deathgasm, this hilarious instant cult classic from New Zealand qualifies as a musical, a fantasy, and, at times, can be as sweet as Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, but with enough demonic savagery and gross-out gore and to rival the entire Evil Dead series, including Jane Levy's remake.

iZombie (Netflix)

A young, aspiring medical professional (Rose McIver) gains the ability to absorb the memories and characteristics of corpses through consuming their brains, which she uses to solve crimes, after becoming a member of the undead.

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: While this TV series based on a DC Vertigo comic book is not a musical, iZombie is a humorously horror-centic fantasy that often could be somewhat as sweet as Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist during its five-season run, thanks to its more relaxed approach to gore.

Pushing Daisies (CW Seed)

A successful baker (Lee Pace) gains the ability to temporarily bring the dead back to life by touching them, which he uses to solve crimes, after forming a connection with a gruff PI (Chi McBride) and reviving his deceased childhood crush (Anna Friel).

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: This short-lived but much-loved ABC dramedy is not a musical (yet, at least), but Pushing Daisies is a fantasy (and romance, too) that might be even sweeter than Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist thanks to its refreshingly bright and dazzlingly eccentric approach to otherwise morbid subject matter.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Netflix)

A mentally and emotionally troubled, yet successful, young lawyer (Rachel Bloom) chooses to abandon her position at a prestigious New York law firm and head to California in hopes to revive a connection with her estranged childhood crush (Vincent Rodriguez III).

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: Co-created by its Golden Globe-winning lead Rachel Bloom, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (which Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist star appears on prominently in Season 4) may not be a fantasy, but it is a musical, a comedy, a romance, and is quite sweet, despite some very dark and uncomfortably grounded subject matter regarding mental health.

Glee (Netflix, Amazon Prime)

A passionate Spanish teacher (Matthew Morrison) accepts the position to lead his high school's choir club in hopes to revive the spirits of a group of emotionally troubled students despite the attempts of curmudgeonly gym teacher (Jane Lynch) to sabotage it.

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: The multi-award-winning, long-running pop culture phenomenon that is Glee may not be a fantasy, but is certainly sweet (when it is not a painful reminder of high school torment) and essentially made musicals on TV cool again before co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk went on to much darker and uncomfortable subject matter with American Horror Story.

Central Park (Apple TV+)

A group of passionate New Yorkers (including Hamilton's Daveed Diggs and Lelie Odom Jr.) accept the responsibility to protect Central Park from the attempts by a curmudgeonly aristocrat (Stanley Tucci) to destroy it.

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: Co-creators Josh Gad (who also stars on the show) and Loren Bouchard (Emmy-winning mastermind behind Bob's Burgers) bring the musical to the world of mature animated programming with Central Park - a funny, sweet, and thoroughly fantastic breath of fresh of air amid most of the dark and gritty subject matter exclusively available on Apple TV+.

Smash (NBC, IMDb TV)

An aspiring Broadway performer (American Idol's Katharine McPhee) competes for the lead role in a musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, despite the discouragement of endless drama behind the curtain.

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: While I would not call this NBC drama particularly sweet nor a fantasy due to its too painfully realistic depiction of show business, with Emmy-winning choreography and its own show-stopping numbers, Smash still lives up to its name as a winning musical series despite lasting two seasons.

High Fidelity (Hulu)

A passionate music fan and compulsive list maker (Zoë Kravitz) finds success running a local record store in her hometown, despite facing discouragement in her love life at almost every turn.

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: Based on Nick Hornby's book which inspired a 2000 film with John Cusack as the lead, Hulu's series adaptation of High Fidelity has no interest in being sweet and comes closest to fantasy when Zoë Kravitz breaks the fourth wall, but it presents the connection between music and romance with greater depth and dry wit than most musicals do.

Teen Beach Movie (Disney+)

A bickering, present-day teenage couple obsessed with surfing (Ross Lynch and Maia Mitchell) find a chance to revive their relationship when they magically become stranded inside a 1960s movie where conflict between fun-loving beach dwellers and a biker gang taunts them at every turn.

Why It's A Good Option for Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Fans: This 2013 homage to the sunny, youthful song-and-dance flicks of Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, aptly named Teen Beach Movie, is everything a Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist fan could want (fun songs and cheeky romance with a supernatural twist) and, being a Disney Channel original, the whole family can watch.

As far as quirky, highly imaginative, and sometimes musical comedies go, there does not seem to be anything currently on TV that better matches that description than Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. January 2020 marked a forking sad day for fans of NBC’s hit series The Good Place. After four short seasons, the cast and crew of The Good Place decided to move on to other projects. The series did the noble and honorable thing by ending while the writing remained fresh and funny, the loyal fan base still existed, and the characters hadn’t lost their ability to experience character growth. It’s only been a few months since its departure, but I miss The Good Place and it’s fascinating, lovable cast of weirdos. Thankfully, the TV world is vast and endless. Streaming services offer so many options that could fill that TV sized hole left by The Good Place.

This list consists of series that have some of the key elements that made The Good Place such a memorable, fun, and unique sitcom.

Dead Like Me

What The Show Is About: Dead Like Me follows a group of grim reapers whose job duties include removing a soul right before someone’s death. It’s about the grim reaping adventures of Gergia (Ellen Muth) and her friends Rube (Mandy Patinkin), Mason (Callum Blue), Roxy (Jasmine Guy), and Daisy (Laura Harris). Dead Like Me was a Bryan Fuller Showtime series that aired for two seasons from 2003 to 2004.

Why Fans Of The Good Place Would Like It: Dead Like Me has more mature themes and content than the bubbly Good Place, but they both deal with death and the afterlife. They also share in their exploration of how death isn’t the final destination, but an extended part of the soul’s journey. Both series also pair an unlikely group of characters whose interactions make them better versions of themselves.

Russian Doll

What The Show Is About: Natasha Lyonne stars in the Netflix original series Russian Doll. She plays Nadia, a software engineer stuck in an endless time loop that forces her to relive her death and 36th birthday. Nadia tries to prevent her death by figuring out what happened.

Why Fans Of The Good Place Would Like It: The Good Place and Russian Doll both have lead female characters who aren’t the best people, but through death, they learn to become a better person. Both series also deal with the idea of time loops. Nadia keeps living the same day, and The Good Place characters continuously relive the same experiment for two seasons.

Cheers

What The Show Is About: Sam Malone (Ted Danson) owns the Cheers bar in Boston, which is frequented by a cast of characters, including Carla (Rhea Perlman), Norm (George Wendt), Cliff (John Ratzenberger), and Fraiser (Kelsey Grammer). Cheers deals with the inter-workings of the Cheers bar and the varying relationships.

Why Fans Of The Good Place Would Like It: Cheers has an interesting ensemble cast, led by Michael himself, that could easily go toe to toe with Eleanor (Kristen Bell), Tahani (Jameela Jamil), Chidi (William Jackson Harper), and Jason (Manny Jacinto) in terms of hilarity and having a direct counterpart. Fraiser and Chidi, Jason and Woody (Woody Harrelson), Eleanor and Carla, and Tahani and Diane are all similar sitcom archetypes.

Pushing Daisies

What The Show Is About: Pushing Daisies is another gone-too-soon cult hit by Bryan Fuller. This one stars Lee Pace as Ned, a man with the power to revive the dead with a single touch. He uses his powers to help solve murders. Things become complicated when he uses his powers to bring back his childhood crush, Chuck (Anna Friel), but he must refrain from touching her again or she’ll die permanently. Pushing Daisies aired for two seasons.

Why Fans Of The Good Place Would Like It: Stylistically, both The Good Place and Pushing Daisies have a whimsical quality and tone to them, giving them a fable-like approach to death.

Schitt’s Creek

What The Show Is About: The Rose family finds themselves completely broke from Johnny (Eugene Levy)’s business partner defrauding him. They have only one asset left: a small town that Johnny bought as a joke. The Roses must leave the rich life behind and join the Schitt’s Creek life.

Why Fans Of The Good Place Would Like It: Schitt’s Creek also puts its main characters in a hell-like environment, similar to the Bad Place. In The Good Place, the four humans bond and find some good within their terrible situation, the same happens for the Rose family. The main characters of both series find love, happiness, and meaning while placed in a less than ideal situation.

Santa Clarita Diet

What Is The Show About: Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant star in Santa Clarita Diet, a Netflix original about married realtors whose life is thrown for a loop when Sheila (Drew Barrymore) becomes a zombie.

Why Fans Of The Good Place Would Like It: Santa Clarita Diet is a series that puts its characters in a really strange and hilarious situation, which is only made funnier by the main four characters: Sheila, Joel (Timothy Olyphant), Eric (Skyler Gisondo), and Abby (Liv Hewson). The Good Place and Santa Clarita Diet share in their ability to give hope to a bleak situation and make it hysterical.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

What Is the Show About: Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a show that follows the cops of the Brooklyn 99th precinct. It’s a police procedural, but in comedy form. Each week, they have a different case and set of criminals to tackle. Brooklyn Nine-Nine also deals with their relationships in and out of the office. The ensemble cast includes Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumbero, Terry Crews, and Andre Braugher.

Why Fans Of The Good Place Would Like It: Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place are both created by Michael Schur, so there series share in their delightful sense of goofiness. They also feel like they exist in the same world. We would completely believe that on her trips to NYC, Jake (Andy Samberg) arrested Eleanor a time or two hundred. Also, can you imagine if Chidi and Holt (Andre Braugher) met? I would pay good money to see a Good Place, Brooklyn Nine-Nine spin-off involving Chidi and Holt in the afterlife, set before the events of The Good Place finale.

Good Omens

What Is The Show About: Good Omens is a limited series starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant as angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley who have been sent on separate missions to ensure the apocalypse, so the ultimate battle between good and evil can begin. Unfortunately, both have grown attached to earth and its people. They must decide if they really want to help end the world.

Why Fans Of The Good Place Would Like It: The Good Place and Good Omens deals with the consequences humans face because of the interference of higher beings. It also shows the blurred lines of good and evil--wrong and right can’t be neatly put in one box or another. Additionally, Michael feels like a combination of Crowley and Aziraphale’s looks and personalities.

The Office

What Is The Show About: The Office is a mockumentary about the Scranton branch of paper company Dunder Mifflin. It revolves around the work lives of the employees. The Office cast includes Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, and Rainn Wilson.

Why Fans Of The Good Place Would Like It: The Good Place creator Michael Schur was a writer on The Office and even played Dwight’s cousin Mose. The Good Place and The Office aren’t close relatives, but they are at least second cousins. Both series are character driven and uses the setting to help advance the storylines. The Office is more reality based than The Good Place, but they are both quirky comedies.

Where to Stream: Right now, The Office is available on Netflix, but won’t be for much longer. Stream it HERE.

Parks and Recreation

What Is The Show About: Parks and Recreation follows the Pawnee Parks and Recreation department led by passionate Pawnee citizen Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). Parks and Rec is another sitcom that uses mockumentary style to follow the everyday lives of small-town workers.

Why Fans of The Good Place Would Like It: This is another Michael Schur series and feels like an even closer relative to The Good Place than The Office. Parks and Rec and The Good Place feel like first cousins. The series have similar humorous styles, but don’t feel like copies or repeats of each other. Parks and Rec and The Good Place are very much their own comedies, but operate in the same comedy realm.

Where To Stream: All seven seasons of Parks and Recreation are available to stream on Hulu and Netflix.

Superstore

What Is The Show About: Superstore follows the employees of the superstore Cloud 9. Each episode follows the employees as they deal with difficult customers, typical wage worker dilemmas, and personal problems. Superstore’s cast includes America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, and Mark McKinney.

Why Fans Of The Good Place Would Like It: Superstore and The Good Place both revolve around people who at their core are good, but may not exactly show it all the time. Each character of Superstore has done something morally ambiguous at some point, but you still like and root for them. Both series focus on characters first, and then enhance them with the comedic situations they’re placed in.

The word cancellation nowadays doesn’t mean what it used to mean when it comes to TV. While it’s never exactly good news to hear that a favorite show has been axed by a network, hope is not lost so long as Netflix and other streaming services are out there as possible saviors. Netflix in particular has become a refuge for programs that just don’t deserve to be done forever. The streaming service has saved a variety of series, ranging from The Killing being brought back from the grave right away to Arrested Development being resurrected after years to Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp revamping an original premise.

Some shows that have been nixed by network television are definitely best left unrevived, but there are some that could use a little more closure. Whether they ended on crazy cliffhangers or just had tons more story to tell, the finales came all too soon. Here is a look at eleven TV shows that would be perfect for Netflix to bring back.

Pushing Daisies

Pushing Daisies was a fantasy/musical/dramedy that ran for two seasons from 2007 – 2009. It followed the story of Ned, a pie-maker able to bring people back from the dead… with a catch. If he revived a dead person for more than one minute, somebody else would die. If he touched a revived person for a second time, that person would die. The talent enabled Ned to help solve crimes, but it also prevented him from ever touching his true love. There was talk of a revival via big screen or Broadway, but nothing even came of either possibility for Pushing Daisies. Netflix would be the ideal place for such a charmingly bizarre series. The right mood was required for an episode of Pushing Daisies, and new installments would be perfect.

Better Off Ted

Better Off Ted was a half-hour satire sitcom that ran for two seasons on ABC from 2009 - 2010. Protagonist Ted was a good man with an important position within a soulless conglomerate corporation. He regularly broke the fourth wall by directly addressing the camera. The premise as well as stellar cast--that included Jay Harrington as Ted, Portia de Rossi as Ted’s boss, and Andrea Anders as Ted’s love interest--made Better Off Ted a particularly promising series. Sadly, the ratings weren’t there to support the comedy, and the final episodes never even aired on ABC. Critics loved the series, and the premise hasn’t exactly gotten less relevant in the years since cancellation. Netflix could nail a revival of Better Off Ted.

Party Down

Party Down was a half-hour comedy that ran for two seasons on Starz from 2009 – 2010. It followed the misadventures of a group of caterers in Los Angeles as they tried to make their break into showbiz. The premise was interesting enough, but the unfailingly hilarious cast was what made Party Down so unforgettable. Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Lizzy Caplan, Ryan Hansen, Martin Star, Jane Lynch, and Megan Mullally made up an ensemble that deserved to stay on screen together for much longer than they did. Although the stars did go on to find hits elsewhere, a reunion for a Party Down continuation would be fabulous. Everybody involved seemed eager to do more, but the stars have not 100% aligned just yet.

Deadwood

Deadwood was a western that aired on HBO for three seasons from 2004 – 2006. Three seasons is a respectable enough run, and the show served up plenty of action during its time on the air, but there was never a sense of closure to give the impression that it was time to say goodbye to Seth Bullock and Al Swearengen. There were still so many people to kill and anachronistic F-bombs to drop. There’s been hope for a film return to Deadwood, South Dakota since HBO cancelled the series, but we’ve been sadly without any new material for far too long now. Surely Deadwood is worthy of a second go, and Netflix would be a great platform.

Caprica

Caprica was an hour-long sci fi drama that sadly ran for only one season on Syfy. The show barely had time to get off its feet before Syfy cited low ratings and gave the cancellation order, but given that Caprica was a a prequel to Syfy’s phenomenal Battlestar Galactica remake with the same production team, Caprica had the potential to become a series to stand the test of time. Of course, BSG had woes of its own during its time on Syfy, but at least the parent show came to a conclusive ending. Caprica could have continued. We saw how the Cylons took over in BSG; we could have seen their rise in Caprica. Perhaps it’s not too late for Netflix to step in and give it another shot.

Jericho

Jericho was an hour-long post-apocalyptic drama that aired for two seasons from 2006 – 2008 on CBS. The show followed the citizens of a small town trying to adapt to life after a huge nuclear attack. Despite a stellar cast, including Lennie James who is now surviving in a different kind of post-apocalyptic world on The Walking Dead, Jericho was enough of a ratings flop at CBS that it was cancelled after the first season. It was only thanks to the enthusiastic fans who sent nuts to the network in a reference to a line from the first season finale that earned them a second season. Netflix and CBS were apparently flirting with a deal to bring new episodes of the series to streaming video, but a deal was clearly not struck.

Happy Endings

Happy Endings was a half-hour sitcom that ran for three seasons from 2011 – 2013 on ABC. The sitcom wasn’t really about anything in particular, but it never failed to bring the laughs thanks to the ensemble of crazy characters. The six friends were all delightfully dysfunctional in everything from their careers to their love lives to their escalating pile-ons of insults. Happy Endings never relied on only certain pairings within the group to carry the show, and mixing up the dynamics on a weekly basis kept it fresh from premiere to finale. The creative team has expressed regret at the cancellation and a willingness to come on board if the opportunity should arise, so perhaps a few strokes of luck and an invitation from Netflix could give a new beginning to Happy Endings.

Constantine

Constantine was an hour-long supernatural drama that ran for only one season of thirteen episodes from 2014 – 2015 on NBC. The series was based on the DC Comics character John Constantine and his work as an occult detective/exorcist. Constantine was the NBC contribution to the Fall 2014 DC blitzkrieg, and it was unfortunately the only one to be cancelled. The producer has said he believes that the show failed to take off because NBC was ultimately the wrong network. Attempts to shop the series around for a new home failed, but there’s no reason why Netflix could not decide to give it another shot. Comic series are all the rage right now, and Constantine is a popular character.

Freaks And Geeks

Freaks and Geeks was an hour-long comedy/drama that aired for one season from 1999 – 2000. Set in the early 1980s, the show followed the lives of high school students designated as either freaks or geeks. It’s gained a cult following in the years since, but most of the cast – including James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segal – have moved on to illustrious careers in showbiz. Fans have been wanting a reunion for years, and producer Judd Apatow has never ruled out the possibility. Franco has raised the point that they’re all much older now, but if Wet Hot American Summer could find a way to make the chronology work, surely Freaks and Geeks could pull it off for a Netflix series.

Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars was a teen noir detective series that ran for three seasons from 2004 – 2007, first on UPN and then on The CW. The show was a critical hit during its original run, but scheduling switcheroos on minor networks kept it from ever gaining as big an audience as it deserved. Teen detective Veronica did make a comeback as an adult in the big screen Veronica Mars movie funded by fans, and the feature worked so well with so much of the original cast back that a Netflix revival could be fantastic. Star Kristen Bell is certainly busy these days, but she’s been vocal about her love for Mars. Of all of the shows that would be perfect for Netflix to bring back, Veronica Mars might have the bests odds of getting to gang back together.

Firefly

What would a list of shows deserving to come back be without Firefly? Firefly was an hour-long space cowboy adventure that is now infamous for being cancelled by Fox after only a single season in 2002. The Joss Whedon series attracted a cult following even during its original run, but it suffered from scheduling difficulties. Even the efforts of fans to find a new home for Firefly fell through. The final episodes didn’t even air on Fox, which is kind of hilarious in hindsight considering how huge a following Firefly has amassed. The crew did come back for another go with the Serenity feature film, but rumors of a further revival haven’t produced anything. An awful lot of time has passed, but if there was any platform that could do justice to a revival, it would be--you guessed it--Netflix.

Few things are as guaranteed as death and taxes are, but you can be damned sure that TV networks are going to cancel some pretty amazing shows, usually on a yearly basis. Some are new dramas that are ended before they have a chance to build an audience, while others are comedies seemingly destined for cult status. Whatever the reason is from the network, the viewer’s anger is all the same when a great show is taken off the air.

Here are 12 shows from ABC’s broadcast history that were downright great, but didn’t last nearly as long as they should have, and so the network should always be criticized for canceling them. Let’s get our logs whittled down to a nice and pointy spear as we dive into the surreal world of David Lynch.

Twin Peaks

Am I saying that the second half of Twin Peaks Season 2 was so damned amazing that there is no other rational choice for ABC to have made than renew it for Season 3? No, although I found the final batch of episodes far more enjoyably ridiculous than many others have. But it was ABC that forced the hands of co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost to reveal Laura Palmer’s killer, something that they’d intended to keep a mystery throughout the series’ run. And although the network wanted the resolution at the end of Season 1, Lynch and Frost held off until the middle of the next season, and viewers just stopped giving a shit after that. A good lesson for the network that didn’t stick. Thankfully, Showtime is behind the upcoming revival series, so we don’t have to worry about ABC giving us a lukewarm cup of coffee again.

Police Squad!

David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker are beloved by comedy fanatics for their many fabulous entries in the genre. Back in 1982, they were only known for Airplane! and for writing The Kentucky Fried Movie, both pillars of excellence, but not exactly calling cards at the time. So their first small screen effort, Police Squad!, didn’t have the credential legs to carry it through ABC’s boneheaded decision to trash the well-received show after just four of six episodes aired, all because it required too much attention to appreciate the humor. That definitely wasn’t the norm for TV at the time, but it wasn’t a fault. It was a plus, just like Leslie Nielsen was, and the fanbase for the shortlived comedy grew enough to warrant an eventual three feature films that people paid attention to with ease.

Forever

The most recent entry on this list, Forever’s cancellation is still fresh, so this is like ripping off a Band-Aid that’s been there for 200 years. Though some gimmick-based shows implode under their own premises, Forever’s lone season rose above thanks to solid performances from Ioan Gruffudd as the immortal medical examiner Henry Morgan and Alana de la Garza as the straightforward Detective Jo Martinez, as well as an often intriguing look at life and death all tied together with procedural elements. Though the ratings took a nosedive in the episodes immediately following the premiere, the audience quickly leveled off and stayed within the 4-5 million range for the remainder of the season. And even though the network suits were reportedly pleased with creator Mark Miller’s vision for Season 2, those execs were the ones who actually killed Henry Morgan for good.

Better Off Ted

It’s bizarre to think that of the multiple series created by TV vet Victor Fresco – including Sean Saves the World, Life on a Stick and Andy Richter Controls the Universe – somehow Better Off Ted lasted the longest, with 26 hilariously satirical episodes. A comedy with its finger on the pulsing forehead vein of corporations and the people who work in them, Better Off Ted is one that packed in jokes of all flavors and sizes – the unwittingly racist light sensors plot was executed almost too perfectly – and boasted a pitch-perfect cast that included Jay Harrington, Portia de Rossi, and Adrea Anders, with Jonathan Slavin and Malcolm Barrett as the bumblingly brilliant spinoff-ready lab scientists. It wasn’t the most promotion-accessible premise, so maybe that’s why ABC didn’t know how to advertise it and thus couldn’t build up an audience properly. Or maybe it took the corporation jabs personally.

The Wonder Years

Is there any other series that captures a time and place, as well as a state of mind, as beautifully and effectively as The Wonder Years? The sharply realized dramedy got six seasons, and it’s impossible to complain about that, but the show’s cancellation was in part due to network execs not wanting to get into mature subject matter as Kevin got older, combined with not wanting to pony up the rising costs that would come with following a teenage boy with a car around. And while I’m not that into seeing a modern day Wonder Years reunion special, I would have liked – like-liked, even – to have seen Kevin Arnold finish high school before the show got shitcanned and we found out that Kevin and Winnie didn’t stay together. So much wasted potential there.

The Addams Family

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and canceled well before they should have been. I’m talking, of course, about The Addams Family, arguably the only black-and-white macabre comedy with a talking ball of hair that is based on New Yorker cartoons. Inexplicably airing in the same fall season as that other horror-driven comedy The Munsters, The Addams Family was less goofy and drew its humor from more absurd and off-putting places. (Though it’s obviously child’s play by today’s standards.) The comedy lasted just two seasons, though the 64-episode span therein is commendable, and the show’s cancellation came largely without a lot of reasoning. It’s possible ABC didn’t want to justify making the transition to color, which was becoming the norm, but few shows in TV history are better suited for an all black-and-white look than The Addams Family. The movies were fine, but the TV show is where my heart lies, Cara Mia.

My So-Called Life

In the halls of “Best Possible ‘90s Teen: Television Edition – Female,” the Daria statue is neighbored by that of My So-Called Life’s Angela Chase, because duh. One has to assume no one at ABC knew the decades-long effect My So-Called Life would have on youngsters hitting that angst-ridden and issue-splattered time of adolescence. The adult world has tons of “canceled too soon” shows, but this remains a personal shot to the heart for love-stricken teens who were far from finished understanding just how deep Jordan Catalano could get, and how many Real World seasons Rickie would end up on. By today’s standards, the ratings would be just fine, but they weren’t back then, and ABC chose not to move on. Star Claire Danes reportedly didn’t want to continue anyway, so who knows where it would have gone? No one. Because it was canceled.

Happy Endings

One of the few worthy successors to Friends as far as “comedies about friends hanging out together with mild consequences” goes, Happy Endings housed a ton of comedic talent in both its central cast as well as the recurring and guest stars, and it seemed destined for a long shelf life on the network. Unfortunately, ABC had no fucking clue how to air this like a normal show over its three seasons, and Happy Endings went through a series of changes both in timeslots and nights which it aired, eventually ending its run on Friday nights. Just insult to injury to insult, really. Creator David Caspe had even less luck with Marry Me on NBC, which featured several actors from this ensemble, and though reunion and comeback talks have continued, there still aren’t any happy re-beginnings on the horizon.

Pushing Daisies

Drink every time you see Bryan Fuller’s name on a list about canceled shows, and you’ll spend your life in a liquor-infused haze. But at least you’d have good tunes if you were watching the 22 episodes that Pushing Daisies was able to get on the air. Pushing Daises was about a guy who could bring the dead back to life (and then the alive back to death) just by touching them, and how he falls in love with a childhood friend he reanimated but can’t ever touch, and also about him running a pie company and helping a private detective solve crimes. Oh, and Kristin Chenoweth’s voice. Few shows on television have ever been as precious and shirtsleeve-hearted as Pushing Daisies, and its fanbase has let its pie-hole give ABC the business over the years. Hope remains that more will come, but Fuller is a busy guy, maybe even with shows that air for too many years rather than too few.

Batman

For all of Batman’s dark and brooding adventures over the years – in universes Burton-ish, Nolan-ary, and Miller-esque – it’s impossible to think about the cowled vigilante without mentally landing on Adam West’s earnestly iconic take on the character during the campy TV series of the 1960s. You won’t find me bitching about ABC’s decision to give Batman 120 often multi-part episodes in just three seasons, but my tone stiffens when it comes to the show getting booted from the air after its ratings drooped in Season 3. Considering this was the era of Yvonne Craig’s Batgirl and Eartha Kitt’s Catwoman, it is shameworthy. This show still has some of the best villains in live-action superhero media, from the core squad of rogues played by Burgess Meredith, Cesar Romero, Julie Newmar and Frank Gorshin to the slew of lesser-seen baddies, with standouts including Vincent Price, Milton Berle and even Liberace.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker

Every Christmas, TV viewers get tons of chances to see Darren McGavin as the father in A Christmas Story, but I’d much rather see networks annually embracing the actor’s earlier work on the horrorish crime drama Kolchak: The Night Stalker. First entering the world through a pair of TV movies, Carl Kolchak fronted the ultra-rare genre-based procedural as he solved crimes caused by vampires, werewolves, Satan, and a ton of other evil entities. And not in a corny way, but in the way that continues to make the show a cult classic and the inspiration for all kinds of TV shows and movies in the past 40 years, most notably The X-Files. ABC canceled it before its first season had even finished, and one could only laugh heartily when they ate crow unsuccessfully trying to reboot the series in 2005.

Sports Night

Aaron Sorkin’s career is often summed up in a series of hallway-traversing conversations and Jack Nicholson denying someone the truth, and it’s inarguable that the two-season brilliance of Sports Night showcases all the hallmarks of the writer’s bag of tricks, minus the Jack. The rare half-hour series to tip the balance to drama over comedy, this behind-the-scenes look at a cable sports show was far more about intra-personal relationships than athletes, and the talent-oozing cast did a stellar job in reminding viewers that these jobs are filled by people with all kinds of problems. (Maybe not the show’s intention.) Despite enormous critical acclaim, ABC canceled the show because its average ratings of over 10 million people just weren’t cutting it in 1998-2000. Monsters.

Anyone who didn’t watch Pushing Daisies should rush over to Netflix right this second and add it to their Instant Queue. The plight of the Pie Maker is one of the best written and most entertaining shows of the past ten years, not to mention the best-looking, since it had some of the most unique production design you could ever hope to see out of the small screen.

According to Gossip Cop, the show’s star, Lee Pace, is in the running to play a close friend of Edward Cullen in the next installment of the Twilight Saga. Garrett has “a lightness and element of humor about him” that will certainly be a nice change for the relentlessly over-broody franchise whose only current comic relief, Bella’s awesome dad Charlie, gets an unfortunately small amount of screen time.

Pace has not yet been approached about the role, but supposedly is at the top of Summit and director Bill Condon’s wish list to step in when filming starts later this year. While it would be good for the series to get an actor in there with some real acting skill (again, Billy Burke and Peter Faccinelli make up most of that), Lee Pace is on the cusp of really breaking out, and a role like this might not be good for him to take if he wants to make a serious name for himself. We’ll keep you posted.

Veronica Mars

(2004 - 2006, Not Rated, Three seasons, HD)

Some of us are still all broken up over the cancellation of Party Down, but at least we can soothe our grief with the knowledge that all three seasons of Rob Thomas' previous fan-favorite series are streaming in HD on Netflix. For fans, this is reason to cheer; for those of you who never watched, this is the perfect excuse! Kristen Bell stars as the lead, a whip-smart, acerbically funny 17-year-old sleuth whose high school seems to have an inordinately high crime rate. In between cracking cases for her schoolmates and swapping rat-a-tat banter with her cop-turned-private-eye dad (Enrico Colantoni as one of the best TV dads ever), Veronica strives to solve the murder of her best friend (Amanda Seyfried) in a season-long arc. Veronica Mars wraps noir trappings around a high-school setting in much the same way Brick did, but usually in a somewhat more light-hearted way. The dialogue crackles, the supporting cast amazes, and Bell herself cements Veronica in the top echelons of the best-written female characters ever to grace the small screen. Season two is by far the show's finest, an intricately plotted season-long mystery that demands (and rewards) careful attention. Season three ships Veronica and company off to college and suffers a bit by shifting to more self-contained episodes, but it's still absolutely worth watching.

Pushing Daisies

(2007 - 2008, Not Rated, Two seasons, HD)

Speaking of quirky, much-mourned crimesolvers, the dead-whispering antics of Pushing Daisies should make a perfect companion to Veronica and her cohorts. A baker (Lee Pace) who can raise the dead with a touch solves mysteries alongside his resurrected crush (Anna Friel) and a caustic, ill-tempered private eye (Chi McBride) with the unlikely name of Emerson Cod. Season one and two are both available in high-def.

(2002, Rated R, 105 min.)

Last week I highlighted Session 9, one of those great underseen flicks that I occasionally have the pleasure of taking down off the shelf and introducing to a friend who's never even heard of it. A close second in that category is this little gem from David Twohy, a haunted-sub story so good it might just make you forgive Twohy for Chronicles of Riddick. On the surface (so to speak), Below is all too familiar: a group of people who run afoul of an angry spirit, then spend the rest of the tale trying to figure out why Casper's so damn pissed off before he kills them all. By placing the ghost story on an American sub during World War II, Twohy immediately solves the biggest problem with any haunted-house story. Namely: why don't these idiots just leave once the walls start bleeding? With German destroyers hunting them on the surface, they can't leave, can't surface, can't get away. They're stuck in the most claustrophobic of confines with a supernatural force determined to take its revenge. Bruce Greenwood shines as the boat's possibly unhinged commanding officer, and Zach Galifianakis puts in a memorable turn as a Lovecraft-obsessed crew member. Twohy's delivers his terror with slow-burn subtlety, unnerving you with things glimpsed out of the corner of the eye: a reflection not quite in sync with the man casting it, a dark shape in a bunk in the background, the hint of a spectral face behind a wall of cascading water. It's old-fashioned horror, and it's all the more to be appreciated in our age of torture porn and slasher remakes.

Beetlejuice

If you're a masochist, follow Below up with Session 9. Otherwise revisit a less intimidating dead guy while you're trying to shake off the willies.

X-Men

(2000, Rated PG-13, 104 min.)

It's easy to take good comic-book movies for granted these days. We've seen the likes of certified blockbusters like Iron Man and The Dark Knight, and noble experiments like Watchmen and Kick-Ass. But it wasn't that long ago that Batman & Robin damn near killed the genre entirely. Blade got Hollywood's attention by demonstrating that even a little-known four-color hero could make bank. Then X-Men came along and proved that superheroes in the right hands could not only bring in the moolah, but could make for seriously compelling storytelling in spite of the sillier aspects like code names and Wolverine's hairdo. While the sequel, X2, bettered this original outing in every way, this first X-film paved the way for all the caped crusaders and emerald space-cops that were to come. And it also happens to be a pretty damn good movie in and of itself, toad-lightning metaphors aside. Revisit Xavier's gang again and do your best to forget you ever heard the name "Brett Ratner."

Batman: The Movie

(1966, Rated PG, 105 min.)

Much as I can appreciate the charms of the old Batman TV series, there's still an undercurrent of bitterness toward it for convincing the world that this was all comic books had to offer -- the biffs, the pows, and the spandex-covered pot-bellies. Thankfully, we all managed to live to see Batman take up his true mantle -- that of the violent, mentally unstable head case who just happens to have our best interests at heart -- so surely we can make room in our hearts for the Batman who sometimes just can't get rid of a bomb.

Slings & Arrows

(2003 - 2006, Not Rated, Three seasons, HD)

I've been a fan of Paul Gross ever since he played the definitive Mountie as Constable Benton Fraser in Due South. This Canadian production casts Gross as a very different character, but he's no less talented and engrossing -- ahem -- for it. Gross stars as Geoffrey Tennant, a has-been actor taking a new job running the New Burbage Theatre Festival. While dealing with insecure actors, insufficient budgets, and an overzealous marketing department, Geoffrey is also shaking off his grief over the recent death of his mentor, Oliver Welles (Stephen Ouimette). Things only get more complicated when Oliver begins appearing to him...whether as ghost or hallucination, even Oliver isn't quite sure. The writing is smart and sharp, with a full complement of delightful characters filling out the troupe and Gross himself knocking the role all the way past the bleachers. Each season focuses on the festival's production of a Shakespeare play, beginning with "A Midsummer Night's Dream," with each season's story arc reflecting and being commented on by the play in the offing. The radiant Rachel McAdams gives a wonderful turn as young actress Kate, but the rest of the cast more than makes up for their lack of name recognition. Slings & Arrows aired on the Sundance Channel here in the states a few years back, but this one is still well below the radar for most folks: check it out, and remember that seasons two and three are available as well.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

(2006, Not Rated, 22 eps.)

Remember when everyone was confident that Studio 60 would be the show-about-a-show that would last, and that 30 Rock wouldn't even survive the first season? Yeah. Still, despite Sorkin's series often getting too high-fallutin' for its own good, not to mention the fact that what we see of the "brilliant" show within a show is frankly awful, Studio 60 is worth watching just for the lead performances of Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford.

Gigli

(2003, Rated R, 121 min.)

I've never seen it. Most of you have never seen it. But admit it: you're a little bit curious, aren't you? Gigli was almost totally eclipsed by the unfortunate pop-culture tsunami known as "Bennifer," but what little managed to sneak through the cracks of media coverage seemed almost hypnotically terrible. Why is Ben Affleck's hair doing that? Did anyone really think his accent was a good idea? Did Jennifer Lopez really just invite Ben Affleck to perform oral sex on her with the line "It's turkey time, gobble gobble." I mean, seriously, just read the plot summary from IMDb: "The violent story about how a criminal lesbian, a tough-guy hit-man with a heart of gold, and a retarded man came to be best friends through a hostage." This is a real movie. They made this. Somebody greenlighted it, people were paid for their work on it, and other people actually paid to sit in a theater and watch it. I don't know about you, but I almost have to watch Gigli. There are too many questions it raises about my fundamental concepts of truth and reality. Gigli should not be, but is. I think if I ever manage to truly comprehend Gigli, I will either die on the spot or immediately evolve Matrix-like superpowers. Join me, won't you?

Because believe it or not, the guy who made Gigli also made some other movies that didn't imperil the very fabric of reality simply by their existence. One of them involved Al Pacino shouting a lot.

This past decade has seen some of the biggest leaps in TV innovation. It will be remembered for the advent of DVR and online streaming, for genre redefining shows like The Office and Dexter. People are going to be talking about the awesome first season of 24 as much as they lament lions chasing Kim in season two. There’s so much to love and loathe that it’s hard not to view this decade as the true golden age of Television.

But what won’t happen is discussion of the following shows. These are the shows that you bring up to friends and they’re not quite sure what you’re talking about. Or you finally find that one person that also watched along with you, which causes you to drop your beer in shock. They’re not the best shows, or the worst. Some got a raw deal from the networks; others were hurt by 9/11, the writer’s strike, and other unforeseen outside problems. Still others just had a shaky start with little chance to prove future greatness before being snuffed out. These are “the others,” the programs that dared to be different, interesting, funny, introspective, dynamic and fun in ways that you missed. They’re gone forever, but there’s something on this list you should have been watching and now’s the time to seek it out on DVD.

Invasion (ABC) - 1 Season

September 21, 2005 – May 17, 2006

Sci-Fi on network television is often a tricky situation. You have to engage a much larger audience than the geeks who are naturally drawn to alien societies or space battles. Invasion aired sporadically for a single season on ABC, and was as much a victim of finding that general audience as it was mishandling by a network that should know better. Shaun Cassidy’s series was one part Invasion of the Body Snatchers and a whole lot of Lost confusing mysteries. Hurricane Katrina put a damper on the main promotion of the show, which focused on the aftermath of a fictional hurricane that led to water creatures invading and taking over a town’s people. As the only season progressed the show got remarkably better than the banal premiere. Who knows where Invasion could have gone if allowed to air on a normal schedule, rather than being put on hiatus for an already cancelled Alias.

Firefly (FOX) - 1 Season

September 20, 2002 – December 20, 2002

Joss Whedon’s Firefly is his greatest achievement in storytelling and yet couldn’t find the audience it deserved. Following a band of space pirates aboard a space ship the concept was solid: take the ideas of a western and mix in the aesthetic of a space opera, sprinkle with a charismatic lead in Nathan Fillion, and a healthy dose of relatable and intriguing characters. Firefly is a series that should have succeeded. While a damning Friday night timeslot did nothing to assist the show, it didn’t wallow in defeat. Loud fans, sometimes even annoying, went on a crusade to keep the show on air. But their efforts fell on deaf ears. Fox was proven right when the film follow-up, Serenity, was a flop at the box office. Blame the network all you want, but this is a case where the viewing public failed to support great television.

The Comeback (HBO) - 1 Season

June 5, 2005 – September 4, 2005

HBO only gave The Comeback one season before pulling it from the air, which may have been a blessing in disguise. Kudrow’s train-wrecky performance as the former sitcom star anxious and determined to reclaim the spotlight is spot-on in terms of mixing charm with desperation. The series follows her character, Valerie Cherish, as she has her big “comeback” recorded for a reality show while she gets back to work on a new sitcom where she plays “Aunt Sassy” to a bunch of twenty-something hotties. There’s an awkwardness to the series that may have made viewers uncomfortable as Cherish is intent on portraying herself as a star, however getting passed that, it’s the moments where she lets her guard down that bring out the best in this short-lived series. Cancelled too soon? Maybe. The show could have gone on and it’s likely that Kudrow’s fantastic comedic timing could have carried The Comeback through future seasons, however the first and only season’s conclusion is a satisfying one.

Drive (FOX) - 1 Season

April 13, 2007 – April 23, 2007

Fox didn’t bury this particular Nathan Fillion helmed project on Friday nights. It was given a prime spot on Mondays, but stiff competition from then hot Deal or No Deal and Dancing with the Stars led to the demise of the series after only four episodes. Drive, created by Whedon friend Tim Minear and Ben Queen, was a little Cannonball Run and a bit Death Race. It followed contestants on an illegal road race, most of who were coerced into being there for mysterious reasons. Not just a racing show, Drive sought to tell an intricate story about its characters’ lives. While seeds were planted early on that would lead to assumedly mind bending twists and story lines, fans will never get to know how Alex Tully would fare. And that’s a damn shame, especially when you consider the competition was a simplistic game show and an embarrassing D-List star dance travesty. They're still on the air, and a quality show like Drive is not. You have only yourself to blame.

Day Break (ABC) - 1 Season

November 15, 2006 – December 13, 2006; April 20, 2008 – June 8, 2008

Day Break had the challenge of figuring out how to tell the Groundhog Day story, but replacing the comedy and charm with murder and conspiracy. It’s possible that viewers weren’t willing to try and remember the rules of Brett Hopper’s (Taye Diggs) repeated day existence. Framed for the murder of a district attorney, Detective Hopper relived the same day over and over. The only things that carried beyond each version of the day were his memories and any injuries he sustained. Except in extreme circumstances the effect Hopper had on the world that day would be erased when it began again at 6:18am. The final episodes were shown streaming on ABC.com and quickly brought a bit of a closure to the series for the few fans that were left. Perhaps a bit overreaching in concept, Day Break had at least four or five good seasons in it that could have created the Lost wannabe water cooler show ABC was clearly looking for.

Traveler (ABC) - 1 Season

May 10, 2007 – July 18, 2007

ABC’s Traveler was a mixed bag from the start. It was clearly one of ABC’s early attempts to find the future new Lost, but the plot was a little too silly for a lot of critics and viewers. Strong performances by the leads kept you interested in the story of two young men framed for the bombing of a NYC museum. They then found out that their supposed college buddy Will Traveler was responsible, and then the conspiracies started piling up. Traveler could never find an audience, averaging around 5 million viewers each week. The show should never have been formulated as weekly television; it was a perfect fit for a limited run (maybe 10 episodes) series. But that format hasn’t been something network television cares to endorse.

Justice (FOX) - 1 Season

August 30, 2006 – December 22, 2006

After Alias ended Victor Garber turned his bad assery to the court room as a ruthless lawyer in Justice. Ron Trott and his team of lawyers tried to entice viewers by defending people that are controversial and of note to the media. It was a marketing firm as much as a place of law. Trying to mix the typical weekly law drama with the more interesting aspects of a show like House, which successfully portrays an amoral antagonist, Justice didn’t have the bite and heart in the early episodes. If the characters were given just a little extra humanity the series may have caught on, but Fox pulled the plug after 13 episodes.

Bionic Woman (NBC) - 1 Season

September 26, 2007 – November 28, 2007

If we’re being honest Bionic Woman wasn’t quite what anyone hoped it would be. David Eick, one of the geniuses behind Battlestar Galactica, brought this modern version of the classic series to NBC with none of the character development and brilliance of his Sci-Fi work. But that was early on in the show, as Bionic Woman continued its first and only season a glimmer of hope began to shine. Guest appearances by Katee Sackhoff as the first bionic lady helped to elevate the action of the show, and we were just starting to take notice of the story when the writer’s strike stopped production. After that NBC was coy about whether the show would be cancelled. Eventually NBC just sort of never put the show back into production, essentially cancelling the series. Perhaps the writer’s strike was to blame for the shutdown of a fledgling, if still growing in creativity, tv show like Bionic Woman. If so, it’s not the only program that the strike had adverse affect on.

Pushing Daisies (ABC) - 2 Seasons

October 3, 2007 – June 13, 2009

Do television viewers just have no soul? Not even a small amount of wonderment as they travel through their dreary days? With more heart and joy than most anything that’s come out of TV in the last decade Pushing Daisies should have succeeded. People should have rejoiced in this quirky tale of love. Instead they turned away when Kristen Chenoweth broke into song, or rolled their eyes when Ned and Chuck used bee suits to embrace on the roof. Stylized like a story book, the fairy tale series was just too much for viewers to grab onto. Season one started strong, with nearly 10 million average viewers, but by the time season two began that number was more than halved. Out of everything that was cancelled this past decade this is the one you should feel most ashamed about letting go. Pushing Daisies was pure love in all its vibrantly colorful and alliterative glory.

The Job (ABC) - 2 Seasons

March 14, 2001 – April 24, 2002

Long before there was Rescue Me Denis Leary told a similar tale on ABC with The Job. The sex and violence was toned down quite a bit, but the story of a messed up cop who was good at his job while being a horrible husband and boyfriend is familiar to anyone watching Leary’s current FX series. The Job also has the distinction of being the funnier of the two shows. The short lived comedy utilized the single camera style before it took over network comedy, or the names Pam and Jim were even a distant thought in the minds of the public. The second season was delayed in the wake of 9/11, and when it returned in the Spring of 2002 the amoral McNeil and his relentless use of drugs, alcohol, women and witty quips failed to find an audience. But that’s OK because the character lives on as Tommy in Rescue Me.

Life (NBC) - 2 Seasons

September 26, 2007 – April 8, 2009

For a brief moment it looked like Life was going to succeed. There was a small, but loyal, fan base building up around the story of the wrongfully imprisoned Charlie Crews. Rather than a typical police procedural Life wove an overarching plotline into its weekly stories, giving the series more heft as a whole unit than similar programs. But it was Damian Lewis’ charming portrayal of the Zen like changed detective that held the show together. Unfortunately you really had to be aware of its existence, because NBC was doing Life little favor with promotion. By the end of the second season the show was floundering in the ratings and NBC finally announced a third season would not be produced.

Tru Calling (FOX) - 2 Seasons

October 30, 2003 – April 21, 2005

Another casualty of FOX was a sci-fi/fantasy show starring Eliza Dushku. No, not the one you are thinking of. In 2003, after the curtain fell on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, scene stealer Dushku was rumored to be considering a spin-off show based on her badgirl vampire slayer character, Faith. But instead, she took a starring role in Tru Calling. She played Tru Davies, a college student who gets a night position working at a morgue with mortician Davis, played with great quirk by Zach Galifianakis. But when the dead bodies ask for her help, it sends her back in time Groundhog Day-style one day to save them from their wrongful deaths. This show started off slow but as the story behind her “calling” started to be revealed, it got even more intriguing. Jason Priestley’s career got revitalized a bit when he joined the show as Jack Harper, a mysterious man who is dedicated to making sure the fate of the people Tru is trying to save runs its course. The second season started off running, with Tru and Jack racing against each other, while debating whether what Tru does is right or wrong. It also unveiled that not only was Tru’s gift inherited from her late mother, but her father had Jack’s job before and had moved on to become his boss. FOX gave the show one season but waited almost an entire year before starting the second, and then canceled it after only six episodes, replacing it with The Omen meets The O.C. bomb Point Pleasant. Tru Calling was not given a fair shake to begin with, buried beneath Friends’ final season and Survivor. When it finally got its second shot, it wasn’t until it was forgotten about by what little audience remained.

Veronica Mars (CW) - 3 Seasons

September 22, 2004 – May 22, 2007

The CW has been suckling at the teat of Smallville for a long time when it comes to their dramas. So it was a surprise when a funny, smart, witty and intelligent show began airing on the network in the form of Veronica Mars. To the casual observer, including many of us here at Blend Television in the early days, the show looked like another CW teen drama. Looking back perhaps that’s what The CW wanted us to believe, but the truth is that VM was a great show. Creator Rob Thomas got to take his young lead character and put her in the FBI during the series’ frantic wrap-up in season 3. And in the process took away nearly everything that had made the show great. Considering the state of the network in general at the time it was surprising that The CW would force the hand of its best creative team.

Arrested Development (FOX) - 3 Seasons

November 2, 2003 – February 10, 2006

For many fans Arrested Development was the epitome of what great TV comedy could be. And to be honest Fox was really giving the show a shot. Certainly more than their track record would lead you to believe. Three full seasons were produced, and the timeslot changes were less about making room for other things than they were for finding a time when the vocal fans would sit down and watch. The series has gone on to be a cult hit on DVD, but the honest truth is that once again we have an example of great television being ignored by the viewing public. For all of their weird quirks the Bluths were an iconic TV family, and it may have been difficult for Joe Average at home to relate to their odd charms. But is there really any better way to heat up TV dinners than in the hot tub?

Jericho (CBS) - 2 Seasons

September 20, 2006 – March 25, 2008

Perhaps we have a little too much network bashing going on in this article. So let’s turn it around and commend CBS for listening to fans and bringing this show back after it’d been cancelled following a mediocre ratings streak in season one. Fans bombarded CBS with pounds and pounds of peanuts, a reference to a line in the season one finale. CBS had no sound business reason to bring the show back, but upon viewing the fan fervor they did anyways. And what did it get them? A kick in the nuts as fans and viewers just didn’t show up. Of course amidst being cancelled and re-picked up Jericho changed from a show about a nuclear blast surviving town to something about two warring towns laid on the backdrop of a major national nuclear holocaust conspiracy. The Jericho of season one is why fans mailed out nuts, and whatever that train wreck of a second season was is likely why they didn’t watch.

Kitchen Confidential (FOX) - 1 Season

September 19, 2005 – December 5, 2005

I doubt Anthony Bourdain, who wrote the brilliant book on which this series was based, would be happy to admit he had anything to do with the show. Bourdain’s book was a gritty, hilarious, and insightful look into the workings of professional restaurant kitchens. Fox’s Kitchen Confidential was a clean version of those stories, including a supremely sterile and improbably white kitchen as the centerpiece of the show. But the single camera comedy, which was paired with Arrested Development, did achieve one important thing: it was funny. The show started off weak in the ratings, but worse after only two episodes was interrupted for an extended period for the baseball playoffs. People who wanted to watch this show their friends raved about couldn’t find it anywhere. By the time it returned no one even cared or realized Fox had another great comedy that was floundering. Only four episodes made it to air, but the entire 13 run production can be seen on Hulu.

The Riches (FX) - 2 Seasons

March 12, 2007 – April 29, 2008

A cable show getting unfairly overlooked? Cable shows don’t get the ratings numbers that network does, but this decade has seen the gap close in. The Riches starred Eddie Izzard as the patriarch of a gypsy family that took over the lives of some dead rich folks. It was good from the beginning and only got better. In fact, it came as a huge surprise to many when the show just didn’t come back. Both Rescue Me and The Riches were adversely affected by the writer’s strike. The former took a hiatus and came back stronger than ever over one and half years later, while the latter was just never brought back. Oddly enough The Riches had a higher premiere rating and its season one average was sometimes double what Rescue Me pulled in for the same year. We’re not completely sure why they’re not around, but the Malloy family is sorely missed in the television landscape.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (FOX) - 2 Seasons

January 13, 2008 – April 10, 2009

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is the last good thing fans are going to get from this franchise. Only a miracle return of James Cameron could save things, and even that’s not a guarantee the quality will return. SCC was vastly superior to both Rise of the Machines and Salvation because the series understood what made the first two films good, while the modern films thought it was all about flipping large trucks and the biggest explosions possible. Terminator was a love story and Judgment Day was a character story, and neither relied on murderous stalking robots to draw in fans. SCC picked up the thread that T2 had begun and was immediately successful in almost every way. 18 million people watched the premiere, and the show was not afraid to tell great character based stories. Despite some plodding plotline threads in the second season SCC still maintained a great insight into the workings of the strange family headed by Sarah. Unfortunately those 18 million viewers didn’t stick around and after an average 11 million viewer first season the second season could barely break past 3 million, and soon went to the trash heap of cancelled Fox shows.

With a singing-centered series like Glee set to premiere this fall, should we be surprised when we hear that an actor/singer is going to be guest-starring on the series? Pushing Daisies fans will be excited to hear this latest bit of casting news for Fox’s new musical-comedy show, Glee.

Kristin Chenoweth is known more recently for her Emmy-nominated performance in ABC’s now cancelled series Pushing Daisies. In that show, she played an occasionally singing pie-server with a hopeless crush on the piemaker. When she guest-stars in Fox’s Glee, she’ll be serving up some bad influence due to her drinking problems:

E! Online’s Kristin Dos Santos posted the news along with a video interview with some of the cast of Glee. On Chenoweth’s appearance, the article stated the following:

Hopefully this news means we’ll be hearing Chenoweth sing at some point during the episode. It would be a waste of the bubbly blonde’s talents to have her there and not show off her fantastic voice.

Kings continues its constant duck and weave maneuvering as NBC announces the show will return to the Saturday night slot this summer to finish out the run. Initially it was thought that NBC would yank the show from the schedule after it ran on Saturday nights for awhile. Instead NBC is just pulling the plug altogether for right now.

Reruns of Law & Order: SVU, Southland and Law & Order will take up the 8pm Saturday slot starting this week instead of Kings. Starting June 13th, and running through July 25th, the series will air the rest of its episodes. And that should be it for any maneuvering.

As soon as NBC announced the intention to pull Kings I stopped watching. There’s too much on TV right now for me to get invested in a fledgling show. It’s the same reason I doubt I’ll watch the final run of Pushing Daisies over on ABC this summer, despite loving that show.

ABC is getting ready to announce their summer schedule. Of course The Bachelorette will be returning on Monday, May 25th at 8:00 pm, and will then move to an undetermined 10:00pm timeslot. Also on the agenda is Mike Judge’s The Goode Family, an animated comedy about a family trying to do good. See what they did there? Word play, it’s fun for the whole family.

But the big news is that cancelled and quirky Pushing Daisies would get to run the rest of its episode. Right now the rumor is that the show would run through the final hours starting Saturday May 30 at 10:00pm. Not a choice spot, but since the show has been cancelled I’ll take what I can get.

So, if you have a childhood dream you’ve always wanted to fulfill, what better way to do it than to get a hit series on TV with a super famous producer, and then pitch him another idea? Bryan Fuller – creator of Pushing Daisies, and former writer/producer of Star Trek Voyager and Star Trek Deep Space Nine, told TrekMovie.com all about his dream and his chances in an interview.

It’s no secret that I adore Pushing Daisies, and since I grew up watching the Shatner-era Star Trek with my dad, I’m guessing there is no one better suited than Bryan Fuller to take it back there. The near cartoonish nature of the original Trek is so much more simple than where the franchise is now, that I think Fuller would be the perfect man to pilot this.

He specifically said, “I told my agent and told the people of J.J. Abrams team I want to create another STAR TREK series and have an idea that I’m kicking around. I would love to return to the spirit of the old series with the colors and attitude…One where you could go back to the spirit and color of the original ‘Star Trek,’ because somehow, it got cold over the years.” Can I get an “amen!”

Later on in the article, the writer states that it isn’t clear what good it would do to tell J.J. Abrams about his ambitions – but duh, with Abrams’ Star Trek movie about to be released, and Pushing Daisies a huge hit that Abrams’ is involved with (not to mention Fuller’s previous Trek experience) – who else would Fuller mention it to? Even if Abrams’ isn’t involved, he certainly has the chops to hook Fuller up with someone who could make it happen.

Either way, I’m betting it will happen. And, since there is a huge Trek void to fill right now, it will surely be welcomed by all.

From the first moment of Pushing Daisies’ season two premiere the show reestablishes itself as a wonderfully quirky fairytale. Fans have no interest in a “previously on” when it comes to this show, despite the long hiatus caused by the writers’ strike. Jim Dale’s opening narrative is a retelling of Ned’s (Lee Pace) backstory and what went down last season. But it’s not rehashed footage; it’s a quirky retelling of the whole story. And it’s from this moment that you sit back and relax, assured that ABC’s finest show is back in full glorious form.

I’m just simply not going to spoil anything about the upcoming episodes for you because we hate doing that to our readers. Not only am I instructed to leave out spoilers by ABC and Blend Television editor Kelly West, but this is a show that is best enjoyed experiencing things moment by moment. Pushing Daisies has a hard sophomore year ahead of it. When most shows are struggling to prove they deserve to stay on, the pie maker has to battle with a shortened first season, and there’s a good chance we may have forgotten what Daisies is all about. The above mentioned opening narrative takes care of that with ease.

Thankfully the formula has not changed one bit. I always hate when my favorite new shows try to reinvent themselves in the second season (I’m looking at you Heroes). Private dick Emerson Cod (Chi McBride) is still trying to make money by utilizing Ned’s ability to bring people back to life. He still doesn’t like Chuck (Anna Friel) tagging along. And Olive Snook (Kristen Chenoweth) is still in love with Ned as she slowly comes to accept that it may never work out between them. There’s a worrying plotline that begins at the end of tonight’s season premiere involving Olive and a nunnery, but if it plays out as hilariously as the start of the story I’ll gladly take it.

Speaking of Chenoweth she shines in season two of Pushing Daisies. Anyone who wondered how she received an Emmy nomination for the role only has to watch the scene tonight when she desperately wants to yell out all of her secrets. I don’t think I realized until that scene how much of a burden the people around her have been with their secretive ways.

The fairytale take on life is what has always appealed to me about Pushing Daisies. In a time when people are into watching the angsty antics of the Heroes cast or the nasty sarcasm and biting tongue of Dr. Gregory House it’s nice that there’s a show on television that can be as pure and joyful as Daisies. And when it comes to the dark material – you know, the bringing people back from the dead – that is handled in much the same fashion. Early in tonight’s episode there is a perfect moment between Chuck and Ned where he receives a bee shower. Despite what’s going on actually being a bit creepy it is one of my favorite tender moments between any two characters in the past year.

If you were already a fan of Pushing Daisies you’ll be pleased with what I consider the best premiere of the fall season. If you’re not a fan yet, then now’s the time to start. Jim Dale’s narrative will catch you up in the early moments of the premiere. Plus you’ll wish he could narrate everything you listen to, or maybe even your own life. I can’t say enough good things about Pushing Daisies. But unlike some shows where I feel there’s a hindrance to getting into the show for some people (Sarah Connor is too sci fi for many) Pushing Daisies welcomes everyone with open arms and a piping hot slice of pie a la mode.

Fall’s not that far away and as the summer shows are beginning to wrap up, I’ve been finding myself wondering when to expect some of my favorite shows to return from the summer hiatus. So I figure now’s as good a time as any to get started on the big premiere schedule. We’ll be posting previews for all of the new and returning shows this season and as always, the schedule is a work in progress. Well, the nominations are in and things are looking very good for a number of cable shows. And while veteran comedy series snatched up all the spots on the Outstanding Comedy series Emmy ballot, a couple of new drama series did manage to get nominations. The announcements were made this morning with actors Neil Patrick Harris and Kristin Chenoweth reading out the names. Both were pleasantly surprised to learn that they’d earned themselves their own nominations for Supporting Actor and Actress in a comedy series. Harris is up for an award for his role as Barney in How I Met Your Mother and Chenoweth is up for her role as Olive in the new dramedy series, Pushing Daisies.

Today the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences posted the short list for the Emmy nominations for Best Drama and Best Comedy series. The list includes the top ten vote-getters for each category and this weekend, screenings will take place to decide which shows actually make it on to the official nomination ballot.

It's great to see new shows like Damages, Pushing Daisies and Flight of the Conchords on there, but I’m disappointed to see that Battlestar Galactica didn’t make it onto this list. Will this show ever get the (official) recognition it deserves? And seriously, why is Grey’s Anatomy even on there? Sure, it’s a popular show and I still watch it every week but I wouldn’t consider the last two seasons to be all that Emmy worthy. Two and a Half Men is there, yet no love for How I Met Your Mother?

It should be interesting to see which of these shows score nominations. The nominees will be announced by the Television Academy at 5:40 a.m. on Thursday, July 17.

The writers strike is over; can I get a “woo-hoo!”? Now, with writers returning to work today, it’s time to get down to brass tacks. The staff, crew and actors of our favorite shows are scrambling to get reorganized and figure out how many new episodes, if any we can expect for the rest of the season. Luckily, E! Online’s Kristen Dos Santos has a good idea about the fates of 39, yes, 39 different series. Here we go:

UPDATE: I have just heard about the fate of NBC's Life, so now we have info on 40 different shows. Read below for the news.

It’s already been widely reported that we won’t be seeing Jack Bauer’s latest hellish day until 2009. Production was cut short before the completion of the 12th episode. Since there likely won’t be time to complete the full 24 episodes, it is likely that the entire season will be shelved until next year.

30 Rock

Tina Fey is a machine. She and the rest of the cast and crew are reportedly set to churn out another 5-10 episodes, to air in April and May.

Battlestar Galactica

No episodes from its fourth and final season have aired, but the hugely popular series has 14 episodes in the can. Because of the time limit, it looks as though the fourth season will be split into two mini-seasons. The first 10 of the already-produced episodes will begin airing April 4th, with the remaining episodes of the season airing either in the fall or in 2009.

The Big Bang Theory

According to executive producer Bill Prady, they’re rocketing back to our TV sets, with episodes appearing mid-March. As for the number of episodes we can expect Prady says, “Well, it all depends on how many writers we want to kill in the process. Maybe it's okay to lose a few—a noble sacrifice. Realistically, though, I'd think eight or nine.”

Big Love

Everybody’s favorite polygamists are slated to go back into production in March, with new episodes airing sometime this summer.

Bones

This series’ fate is somewhat up in the air. While one castmember is confident they will return to work within the next couple of weeks, there has been no official announcement regarding whether or not we will see any new episodes this season.

Brothers & Sisters

There are only four more episodes coming this year and will more than likely air during May sweeps.

Burn Notice

Burn Notice is actually in a pretty good position. The strike lined up almost perfectly with their hiatus and USA has bumped them up to a 16-episode season that will air this summer.

Californication

Since they (inexplicably) just won a Golden Globe, they’ll definitely be back, but there’s no word as to when.

Chuck

The Buy More gang will definitely be back—but probably not until next season. But hey, at least they’re getting a second season.

CSI: NY

There’s a possibility of up to seven new episodes this season, but this along with the possible premiere date is unconfirmed.

Desperate Housewives

Executive Producer Marc Cherry is reportedly “chomping at the bit” to get back to work. There’s a chance we can see six new episodes of Wisteria Lane hijinks by the time May sweeps rolls around.

Dexter

CBS is getting ready to air the first season. Meanwhile, Showtime is going ahead with a brand-new third season, but a premiere date has not been announced.

Dirty Sexy Money

DSM reportedly still has a few unaired episodes, but those will be the only new ones we can expect until next fall.

Friday Night Lights

Aaaaaack. The second season DVD reportedly only contains the 15 episodes that have already aired, so it looks as though last Friday’s episode will be the last of the season. Based on its continuing low ratings, there’s also a good chance it will be the last new episode—ever. Proving, once again, that TV is ridiculously unfair.

Gossip Girl

The CW lurves this show, so there’s a chance we can see as many as nine more episodes this season and will return ASAP.

Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s will go back into production immediately and produce a handful of episodes to air in April and May.

Heroes

We pretty much knew going into the strike that Heroes wouldn’t be back until next season. The plan now is to have it relaunch at the end of the summer. In the meantime, showrunner Tim Kring is taking a page from Lost producers and mapping out the series for the next several seasons. This can only mean good things after its meandering second season.

House

The docs are expected to return for a handful of episodes to air April and May.

How I Met Your Mother

While there has been no official word from CBS regarding HIMYM’s fate, executive producer Carter Bays says that they’re going to try to churn out about eight more episodes.

Life (New Info)

The NBC series starring the ridiculously hot Damian Lewis didn't exactly receive stellar ratings, but is nonetheless mercifully being picked up for a second season. However, we are unlikely to see any new episodes this year.

Lost

Lost has just started airing new episodes, and while we’ll likely get more than the eight episodes we thought, it will be less than the originally promised 16. Producers are reportedly working on an additional five episodes to bring the season total up to 13.

Mad Men

Mad Men has actually been in production for the last week, since their production company, Lionsgate, was able to sign an interim deal with the WGA. They’re currently expecting a late-summer premiere date.

My Name is Earl

EP Greg Garcia says they’re planning to produce a one-hour re-season premiere, a one-hour season finale and five episodes in between. Production is scheduled to start in two weeks, but a premiere date has not been announced.

NCIS

A writer hopes to get six more episodes produced this season, but there has been no official word.

October Road

The series had a 13-episode order, and there are three produced but unaired episodes remaining. There has been no word regarding the series future, however.

The Office

6-10 more episodes! Hallelujah! Hopefully the writers have been thinking of hilarious and inventive ways to work with/around star Anglea Kinsey’s real-life pregnancy.

One Tree Hill

The CW drama has six already-produced episodes ready to air, and the network has requested an additional five or six episodes this season.

Private Practice

Addison and the gang aren’t likely to return this season, but will be back for a second season with at least 13 episodes.

Psych

The detective show just aired its season finale and will return next season with 16 more episodes.

Pushing Daisies

The writers won’t go back to work until March, and even then they won’t be working on more episodes for the first season. Instead, they’ll be concentrating on bringing us a full kick-ass second season.

Reaper

Reaper will reportedly finish out this season with five more episodes, but any premiere dates and its fate after this season have not been announced.

Samantha Who?

The Christina Applegate show already has three produced but unaired episodes and ABC has reportedly asked them to produce another 6-8 episodes for this season. They’ve also been picked up for a season 2.

Scrubs

The strike put Scrubs in an especially bad position, with NBC not too psyched to air the remaining episodes of the comedy’s final season. Creator Bill Lawrence has vowed to write and produce the final six episodes, but where and when they’ll be shown is still up in the air.

Smallville

While no dates have been announced, the CW reportedly wants five more episodes produced this season.

Supernatural

Supernatural has been asked to produce five or six more episodes this season, but EP Erik Kripke thinks it will be more like three or four episodes.

The Tudors

Season two has already been shot and will premiere in March.

Ugly Betty

We can expect 4-6 more episodes this season, with one of them possibly being a musical episode.

Weeds

The Showtime series is currently in production and will air 12 episodes starting in July.

Women’s Murder Club

One of my guilty pleasures is in a not-so-good spot. There’s a chance that we won’t see any more episodes of the Angie Harmon show—ever.

This is what we have so far, but be sure to keep checking Blend Television for all of your prime-time updates.

Remember back before the writers strike? Yeah, me neither. It really feels like it’s been going on for my entire life. Anyway, back when we had a TV season, we had lots of new shows, with some of the best calling ABC their home. ABC recognized this and gave full-season pickups to most of them, including two of my favorites, Pushing Daisies and Samantha Who?. Now while it looks like most of those shows won’t ever see their promised back nine, we do have more good news from the Alphabet network. Nine series are being given the green light for next season.

Leading the pack of those picked up for another year are the usual suspects, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives and Lost (which has already been picked up for the next three seasons). ABC is also showing faith in a couple of sophomore series, bringing Brothers & Sisters and Ugly Betty back for third seasons. Rounding out the list are four brand-new shows with sadly truncated seasons. Pushing Daisies, Private Practice, Samantha Who? and Dirty Sexy Money are all receiving a second shot next year.

Of the new series, Samantha Who? and Dirty Sexy Money are reported to have a few pre-strike episodes in the can that we may be able to see this season. The folks over at Pushing Daisies, however, say that we won’t be seeing any of the gang over at The Pie Hole until the fall. As of now, there’s no word on whether or not we’ll see more of Addison’s California adventures on Private Practice this season.

Not on the pickup list are Boston Legal and Men in Trees; the latter of which has something like 27 unaired episodes that ABC has inexplicably not been showing. Last year, ABC only picked up seven scripted series for the 07-08 season and they did it all in one fell swoop. If last year’s behavior is any indication, that does not bode well for these two shows.

Having never watched an episode of Boston Legal or Men in Trees, I’m concentrating on the awesomeness of Pushing Daisies being around for a full 22 episodes next season. Combined with the strike ending tomorrow, it looks like this is going to be a pretty good week in TV.

As a woman, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get caught up in the romantic relationships between the characters on my favorite TV shows. This is not to say that in order for a TV show to be good, there has to be at least one great romance involved in the story. But when there is a good ongoing saga, the girly side of me can’t resist getting into it. So I cant help but notice that this season of TV seems to be severely lacking on the romance department.

This is not for lack of trying on the part of the writers of the shows I watch. For example, there’s just as much sex as ever on Grey’s Anatomy this season but am I alone in being completely bored, if not irritated by the current couplings on the show? I had hoped that if the writers tried to continue the ridiculous George/Izzie relationship, they would at least find a way to make the couple likable. Instead, Callie has become both the victim and the hero of their little love triangle and George and Izzie’s “romance” only serves to annoy me more and more with each passing episode. There’s just no chemistry there. Seeing these two trying to be all cuddly and cute on screen is almost like watching two step-siblings try to have a romantic relationship.

Then of course we have Meredith and Derek. I’ve been over their relationship since season 2 yet the whole thing seems to keep dragging on. Sure, relationships are hard but how many times do we have to see Derek begging for Meredith’s love and her disappointing him over and over again?

And speaking of ABC shows – Is anyone else totally over the Henry/Betty saga on Ugly Betty? I mean, sure, Henry is adorable and I was totally swept away by their interoffice flirtation last season but with the whole drama with Charlie and her baby, whom as of right now, we’re meant to assume is Henry’s, the romance between Betty and Henry has really started to sour for me. Then of course, there’s Freddy Rodriguez’s character, Giovanni. I’d much rather see something start to develop between him and Betty sometime relatively soon. There seems to be more chemistry between Betty and Giovanni than there is between Henry and Betty these days.

On the positive side, I am happy to see Jim and Pam together on The Office and I would prefer the drama between these two be put to rest, at least for the season. That’s probably too much to ask. Couples that finally get together on a TV show rarely seem to be able to maintain a balanced, happy relationship for more than a couple of months before the whole thing starts to fall apart or some catastrophe happens that causes them to rethink things.

There’s virtually nothing going on in the romance department on Desperate Housewives, unless you count Carlos and Gaby’s affair. As that involved a crab-attack, the whole thing is more comical than it is romantic. I suppose until things start to genuinely heat up on my favorite series, I’ll have to settle for Ned and Chuck kissing through plastic wrap on Pushing Daisies and Mick and Beth’s almost-romance on my guilty-pleasure series, Moonlight.

Amazing Race 12 (CBS) 8:00 pm

This classic film stars Judy Garland, as Dorothy Gale, a girl who bumps her head during a tordado and wakes up over the rainbow. You’ve probably seen it already but like I said, it’s a classic.
