Noah Wyle might not think a night shift spinoff of The Pitt is a great idea, but fans (myself included) still really, really want it. So, with that in mind, when I interviewed one of the show’s writers, I had to ask for her take on the potential for the night crawlers to get their own show.

Simran Baidwan has been a writer and executive producer on The Pitt since Season 1, and when I spoke to her about Season 2 and what’s to come, I also asked about what fans want. Specifically, I asked her how she felt about the growing discourse surrounding a potential night shift spinoff. In response, she said:

Well, you heard her, this choice is in the hands of showrunner and creator R. Scott Gemmill. And for all you night shift supporters out there, that’s not a great sign. He told EW that while it’s fun to see the night crawlers in The Pitt, a spinoff about them is “not our show.”

So, while Shawn Hatosy, who plays Abbot, is all for the night shift getting a show, the guys who make the big decisions behind the scenes aren’t so sold on it. Therefore, at least for now, don’t get your hopes up for a full-blown spinoff. However, do get your hopes up for more night shift showing up in Season 3 of The Pitt.

That’s because earlier in the interview, I also talked to the writer about the potential role the night shift could play in Season 3. We already know Ellis is going full-time in the daytime for this upcoming cycle. So, I asked how they decide when to bring these beloved characters into each shift. In response, Baidwan said:

How exciting! In Season 2, which you can stream in full with an HBO Max subscription, we got to see the night’s charge nurse, Lena, earlier in the season because she was Roxie’s death doula. Meanwhile, Abbot showed up mid-season because he was on a SWAT call that ended with people getting injured. I didn’t expect either of those appearances, and it makes me very excited to see how they work the night shift into the November-set season that’s coming up.

While the night shift won’t get their own show, at least they’ll still play an important role in The Pitt. It also sounds like it's perfectly possible for them to show up outside their shift handoffs, too. So, while I’ll keep hope alive that someday Shawn Hatosy and co. will get to lead their own spinoff of The Pitt, I’ll be looking forward to seeing them return in Season 3.

Well, another shift in The Pitt is over, and we’ve clocked out for the season. However, I haven’t stopped thinking about the show since it closed out its second season on the 2026 TV schedule. In fact, there are three specific questions that I’ve been pondering for a while now that I need Season 3 to answer, so let’s break them down.

What's Going On With Robby And Baby Jane Doe?

When The Pitt’s Season 2 finale ended, my first question was: Will Robby become a dad? He’d spoken about thinking he’d have kids by now, and he was very sweet with Baby Jane Doe at the end of the episode.

Well, the answer to that question is decidedly no, as the show’s creator R. Scott Gemmill told TV Line. However, he also explained that there might be more to explore with that baby:

Now, Robby’s reckless behavior with his motorcycle and his confrontations in Season 2 showed us that he might be thinking about suicide. It’s obvious he was not in a good place mentally this season, and it seemed like he might never return from his sabbatical. However, after that final interaction with the baby, it seemed like he figured out how to believe that life is worth living again.

So, the question now becomes: Will Baby Jane Doe stay in his life somehow, and how will this storyline (whether we see the baby again or not) impact him and his return to work in Season 3?

Will Al-Hashimi Be Reported?

After a full season of wondering what Dr. Al-Hashimi was hiding, it’s revealed in the finale (which you can stream with an HBO Max subscription) that she has a history of seizures and that she had two during her shift in The Pitt. She tells Robby this information, and he freaks out, saying that she’s “not fully capable” of running the department, and she knows it. He also told her:

Speaking about how Dr. Robby reacted to her medical condition, Sepideh Moafi, who plays Al-Hashimi, told TV Line:

That leaves me wondering if she’s been reported for this. We know she’s expected to be in Season 3, but the extent of her involvement is unknown. Hopefully, when we see her again, we’ll get a bit more clarity on what happened and how it impacted her role in the ED.

Where Did Mohan Go?

A few weeks before The Pitt’s second season ended, it was revealed that Supriya Ganesh would not be back as Dr. Mohan in Season 3. Noah Wyle explained that this choice was made because it’s not realistic to keep the cast the same from season to season. ERs and teaching hospitals have high staff turnovers, therefore the show does too.

So, I started to wonder where Mohan will go after her time in Pittsburgh. In Season 2, there was talk about New Jersey (though that hope seemed dashed), and it was recommended that she look into geriatrics as a specialty. It turns out, when Season 3 returns, she won’t be in The Pitt because Gemmill said, “she’s just not working that day.”

While that technically answers my question, I need more than that. If Mohan isn’t returning after Season 3 either, I’d like an answer about what she did after her time in the emergency room. They gave us that with Dr. Collins this season, and Mohan deserves it next season, too.

Those are all the big questions I have going into Season 3 of The Pitt. Odds are it will premiere in early 2027, so we shouldn't have to wait too long to clock in for another shift. Hopefully, when it’s time to return to the ED, we get some answers.

The Pitt has come to a close on the 2026 TV schedule, and the day shift has clocked out. Now, it’s the night shift’s turn to run the ED; however, we sadly won’t get to see that on our screens. Fans desperately want to see it, though, as the cry for a night shift spinoff has gotten louder and louder. Now, Noah Wyle and The Pitt’s creator have shared their feelings on the potential for a second series set in the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

While it felt like The Pitt might be setting up a spinoff, and Shawn Hatosy, who plays the leader of the night shift, Dr. Jack Abbot, has shared his love for the idea, don’t get your hopes up. That’s because when showrunner and creator R. Scott Gemmill was asked about doing a show about the night shift by EW, he said:

He went on to explain that the night shift is very important to The Pitt, because they are “used as a transition to show that the ER never stops.” While that makes sense, it’s also a reason why I want to see a spinoff. I want to watch all 24 hours of work.

However, I do understand what he’s saying; they are focused on the day shift. Noah Wyle, who not only plays Dr. Robby but also serves as an executive producer, writer and director on the show, reiterated that point too during an interview with Deadline, noting:

Well, that’s not a no, so it’s not impossible. However, between these two comments, I do think we need to give up on our night shift dream (at least for now).

Of course, I was bummed to hear this. I would like to see what happens between when Shen walks in with his Dunkin and when he finishes his coffee. However, we just won’t be getting that. So, we’ll have to take the night crawlers where we can get them, and that’s at the start and end of a season of The Pitt.

That’s going to change a bit in Season 3, though. That’s because Ayesha Harris, who plays Dr. Parker Ellis, will be working a day shift in the upcoming episodes. So, we’ll get to see a staple part of the night crawlers during the day, and that’s very exciting.

Along with her working a double shift, I also feel relatively confident they’ll find a way to get characters like Shen and Abbot into the show in unexpected ways. During Season 1, they were heavily featured during the final few episodes because they were helping with the mass casualty event as their shift started. Then, in Season 2, Shawn Hatosy’s character appeared midseason because he had to bring someone who had been shot during a mission he was on to the hospital.

All this is to say, while we might not get a show devoted solely to the night shift, I do feel confident we’ll still get to see a fair amount of them in Season 3. We know it will be set in the winter, maybe November, and I’m hopeful that the conditions could give the night crawlers a reason to spend more time in the emergency department.

However, don’t get it twisted, while I’ve accepted these comments and know the chances of a night shift spinoff are slim, I still have hope that it could happen someday. In the meantime, I’ll be preparing to clock in for our third shift in The Pitt by streaming the first two seasons with an HBO Max subscription.

There’s something special about a good medical drama — there’s intensity, high stakes and often enough blood that even horror fans can get on board. The Pitt has all of the above, and the series’ first season (streaming with an HBO Max subscription) has been raking in awards for Noah Wyle and his co-stars. Now, with The Pitt Season 2 hitting the 2026 TV schedule, critics have seen 9 of the 15 episodes and are weighing in on how the drama holds up over another long day.

The Pitt Season 2 will feature a time jump of about 10 months, again following the ER staff in real time through one day’s shift. This time around, it’s Fourth of July in Pittsburgh, so who’s ready to see some firework burns? Let’s get to the reviews. Alison Herman of Variety calls The Pitt’s return “triumphant,” with no need for drastic upgrades following Season 1’s success. Rather, the actors have made subtle changes to reflect the evolution of their characters as the show continues to address real-world social issues. Herman continues:

Nick Schager of The Daily Beast agrees it’s a plus that creator R. Scott Gemmill doesn’t try to one-up himself after Season 1 made The Pitt one of the best shows streaming on HBO Max. Noah Wyle is brilliant, the critic writes, and the show is more confident than ever, not just avoiding a sophomore slump but building on its solid foundation to remain not just the most harrowing medical series on TV, but the most empathetic as well. More from his review:

Angie Han of THR says The Pitt Season 2 is as thrilling and gory as the first and still oddly comforting. In fact, the critic writes that re-entering the doors to the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center felt like catching up with an old friend. That’s certainly not something you often hear about shows set in a hospital. In Han’s words:

Chris Evangelista of SlashFilm says The Pitt continues to turn empathy and competency into peak TV, with memorable characters played by talented actors giving great performances. Evangelista gives the nine episodes released for review a 9 out of 10, saying the HBO Max medical drama remains one of the best shows on television. He says:

Ben Travers of IndieWire gives it a B, saying Season 2 introduces an interesting dynamic between Dr. Robby and Dr. Baran Al-Hashim (Sepideh Moafi). Dr. Al is set to replace Noah Wyle’s character in the ER for the length of his impending sabbatical. As he tries to make it through one last shift, she represents the future and inevitable change. Travers writes:

It seems that, by all accounts, The Pitt’s second season continues a lot of what made it one of fans’ favorite new shows of the past year. Check out the trailer for the new season below.

Ever since I started watching The Pitt and learned that the actress behind Dr. Mel King, Taylor Dearden, was the daughter of Bryan Cranston, I’ve been wondering if he’d ever appear on the show. Then, I heard the Breaking Bad actor praise his kid's work, and that dream became bigger. Now, as Season 2 of Pitt prepares to premiere, an executive producer has opened up about whether that dream could ever become a reality.

This whole conversation about Cranston started when Chucky actor Brad Dourif was brought up during an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, because he guest-starred on The Pitt during Season 1. Notably, his daughter, Fiona Dourif, is a regular on the medical drama – she plays Dr. McKay – and her real-life dad got to portray her character’s father, Neil McKay. So, the interviewer asked if there was a “temptation” to “get Bryan to come in with Taylor.” In response, director and executive producer John Wells said:

Well, that settled things quickly. The odds of us ever seeing Bryan Cranston on The Pitt are slim to none. However, there’s a good reason behind it.

Overall, this medical drama is made up of extremely talented actors who were not super well-known, with the exception of Noah Wyle. That is a fact they’d like to maintain on the show, so the attention stays on the characters we know and love and the messages about healthcare workers and medicine they’re working to spread. Explaining that point further, Wells said:

To be blunt, if Bryan Cranston (or any A-lister for that matter) were to be on The Pitt, it’s possible that it would shift the focus of the show and leave people more likely in awe of the actor than the story at hand.

Don’t get me wrong, some series use A-list guest stars in very effective ways. I mean, Cranston won a 2025 Emmy for guest-starring on The Studio, which felt like it featured every famous person ever in it. However, other programs aren’t built to do things like that, and that’s the case for The Pitt.

So, as The Pitt gets ready to premiere on the 2026 TV schedule, don’t get your hopes up. However, don’t feel like this is a bad thing either. Sure, it’d be great to see the father-daughter duo on screen together, but they can do that elsewhere. When it comes to this medical drama (which was one of my favorite shows of 2025), the focus is going to stay on the actors we got to know last season and introduce us to new guest stars and regulars who will be played by talented actors who deserve the spotlight. That seems like a win to me.

Now, to see Taylor Dearden and the cast of The Pitt back in action, make sure your HBO Max subscription is ready. Season 2 premieres on January 8, and then it will air weekly on Thursdays after that.

Season 2 of The Pitt is going to premiere on the 2026 TV schedule in January, which means it’s almost time for the staff to clock in. However, when we return to this Pittsburgh hospital next season, things will have changed, as one doctor returns after a major controversy and another completely leaves.

So, when we finally get to the first hour of this second shift, there are two questions I need answered – one is about Langdon’s return and the other is about Collins' exit.

Why Is Dr. Langdon Allowed To Come Back?

At the end of Season 1, Langdon was not on good terms with Robby, and that’s putting it lightly. After Santos was suspicious of him for a while, it was revealed that he was stealing medicine from the hospital. Robby told him to leave after that, but he returned to help the hospital handle the victims of the mass shooting not long after.

So, his fate at the hospital at the end of Season 1 was uncertain at best, and it seemed highly likely he’d be out of a job. However, Patrick Ball, who plays Langdon, is returning for Season 2, which means his doctor will be back at work. Now, I’d like to know why he was allowed to return.

Thankfully, it turns out his return is an important point of the upcoming episodes, as showrunner R. Scott Gemmill told EW:

The showrunner also explained that when we come back, Langdon’s issue will have spread around the ER. This will also serve as the first time Ball’s doctor and Robby have seen each other since the end of Season 1.

So, there will be a lot to unpack when this Emmy-winning show returns, and that includes why Langdon was allowed to come back.

Where Is Dr. Collins?

Now, while Langdon’s return is surprising, I don’t think it was as shocking as the news that Tracy Ifeachor wouldn’t be returning as Dr. Collins.

Noah Wyle confirmed that Collins’ exit was a creative decision, noting how much they love the actress who plays her. Meanwhile, executive producer and director John Wells gave a bit more context about why her character won’t be on The Pitt while speaking with THR. Noting the reality of hospital staff turnover, he explained:

This is a great point. Hospital staffs evolve and change, so this kind of decision is natural. However, after Collins had a miscarriage and left work early in Season 1, I think many were hoping to hear what happened to her next.

Hopefully, we will learn something, because I’d like to know where she went. So, when Season 2 returns, I’d like at least a sentence of dialogue that tells us where Collins is and what she did between seasons.

Thankfully, we don’t have to wait long to return to The Pitt, because it will be back in January. In the meantime, you can theorize about the answers to these questions while streaming Season 1 with an HBO Max subscription.

Noah Wyle made his TV medical drama comeback amid the 2025 TV schedule with Max’s The Pitt. The show has since become a hit, and it quickly landed a Season 2 renewal. Not too much is known about the second season, but what's been reported is that it'll take place over Fourth of July weekend, meaning that the doctors, nurses, and staff at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital will be dealing with quite a bit. All of that aside, though the series' EPs are also addressing whether the new episodes will explore the characters' home lives.

The end of The Pitt’s first season gave fans a little look into the personal lives of some of the doctors following the craziness that was their 15-hour shift. From Whitaker sleeping in an empty wing of the hospital to Mel picking up her autistic sister, to Robby, Abbot, Mohan and Javadi, among others, gathering for a much-needed post-shift beer. It wasn’t much, but it was great to see them outside the hospital. For those hoping that it will continue, executive producer R. Scott Gemmill told TV Insider that his thinking is elswhere:

As great as it would be to see the characters outside the hospital, it would be difficult for the show to accommodate those kinds of storylines. Each episode takes place over the course of an hour in one shift, so it would be tough for the writers to balance the drama at the hospital with anything substantial going outside its walls. So Gemmill's approach does make sense. Fellow executive producer John Wells echoed his colleague's sentiments with some cerebral thoughts of his own:

There are plenty of shows that center around a specific workplace, but very few are as visceral as this show. Every episode provides a detailed look at what it's like to work in a medical facility. With that, the producers seem keen on keeping the bulk of the action confined to Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. Sure, it’s possible that The Pitt Season 2 will once again end with the characters all going home or hanging out somewhere, but it sounds like fans shouldn’t expect that to happen during the season.

Of course, it's not like The Pitt, which is one of the best shows streaming on Max, will be grasping for storylines for Season 2. A Fourth of July weekend backdrop could certainly create some pretty intense emergencies and introduce some interesting patients. (Why do I get the feeling a fireworks-related incident is on the horizon?) The season will also see Langdon return from rehab, which will (hopefully) be compelling as well.

Whether the stories take place in the hospital or not, I'll certainly continue to watch The Pitt. Ahead of Season 2's premiere in 2026, grab a Max subscription and stream the first season.

Spoilers below for NCIS: Los Angeles’ final episode ever, so be warned if you haven’t yet checked it out!

After 14 seasons on CBS, NCIS: Los Angeles wrapped up its character ensemble’s stories in various ways that tied into the idea of family, whether it be of a biological or professional nature. Sam had some meaningful moments with his father, Callen and Anna made their relationship more permanent with an impulse wedding, Rountree was able to support his sister (albeit via a lawsuit settlement with the LAPD), and Hetty’s storyline was closed out with guest stars and a trip across the globe. And let’s not forget the big news that Daniela Ruah’s Kensi shared with Eric Christian Olsen’s Deeks: she’s pregnant, and it probably-maybe had nothing to do with his shawarma, so to speak! But it turns out that reveal likely wouldn’t have played out had CBS renewed NCIS: L.A. for Season 15 instead of canceling it.

The long-running NCIS spinoff laid its big finale moments out in fairly short order during the runtime of “New Beginnings Part 2,” which pretty much tracked with how Kensi and Deeks’ ascent to parenthood went down. Their initial frustrations over Kensi not being able to get pregnant were seemingly resolved in Season 13 when they adopted Natalia Del Riego’s Rosa Reyes. But then along came fate with the big surprise that Rosa will now be a big sister. Fans obviously won’t get to see how that will play out, and it sounds like that would always have been part of the plan on that front. When asked if there were any storylines that had to be tossed out or adjusted after getting the final-season news from CBS, showrunner R. Scott Gemmil told TVLine that the show likely would have held off on both Kensi’s pregnancy and Callen and Anna’s nuptials, saying:

That's perhaps a surprising bit of news to hear, especially for anyone aware of how much fans were predicting to see that reveal happen, or that Daniela Ruah was just as pumped as the fans to learn the news that her character was expecting a bundle of joy with her true love. But according to Gemmil, it was an issue of practicality over having to play out a pregnancy and newborn's birth. When asked to elaborate on it, he continued, saying:

So it stands to reason that if NCIS: Los Angeles had lasted another ten years, fans would have seen a far older Kensi and Deeks becoming new parents, although maybe the plan would have changed along the way. If anything, that kind of time gap would put them closer to retirement, or at least taking a desk job that isn't as risky as what they're currently tasked with handling. Not that it's any easier on a woman's body to have children later in life.

But whatever the potential future could have been, fans are living in the reality where the couple can theoretically be heading into the best years of their lives, without any danger or other job-related worries. If there aren't any more episodes to tell us otherwise, we can believe whatever we want.

Also, as evidenced by plenty of other series to date, it's not exactly a dream scenario to have an unpredictable newborn or infant on the set of a TV show. (Just ask John Stamos, who famously got the Olsen twins temporarily fired from Full House for such behavior.) So that would have also taken things to a new level, for better or worse.

All episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles are available to stream with a Paramount+ subscription, so fans can relive all of Sam and Callen’s biggest missions over and over while waiting to see if we’ll ever see the characters again via crossovers with the flagship or via NCIS: Hawai’i. 

The long-running (crossover-centric) NCIS franchise will be getting somewhat smaller very soon, as its first spin-off, NCIS: Los Angeles, is ending after its currently airing 14th season. CBS has promised a big send-off for the endearing cast of characters, and fans are hoping for answers to a number of long-held questions. Among the plot threads that they're mulling over is the fate of the long-absent Hetty. So how will things go down for the beloved operations manager? Well, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill is shedding some light on that.

Linda Hunt hasn't played Hetty for quite some time due to a being involved in a car accident in 2018 and later due to COVID safety measures put in place amid the pandemic. The character has appeared briefly over the last few seasons, with the writers establishing that she’s in Syria for a special mission. R. Scott Gemmill gave  Parade some good news in regard to whether the lingering storyline will be resolved at some point before the series ends, and fans are sure to be pleased by his comments:

A resolution to Hetty’s Syria subplot has definitely been a long time coming and, with Callen and Anna's wedding approaching (and the show ending), it feels like the right time to bring her back into the fold. NCIS: LA fans know how close Callen and Hetty are, and the former would not want to get married without his mother-like figure there. R. Scott Gemmill previously stated that barring any kind of COVID surge, the plan was for the team to find Hetty and possibly pull her out of a dangerous situation. Gemmill unsurprisingly didn't go into detail this time around, but he seems incredibly confident that audiences will appreciate what's being planned.

Honestly, the show just hasn't been the same without Hetty, and it’s been tough on the characters. On top of the impending Callanna wedding, Deeks and Kensi have also been through a major life change without her, as they became parents. With thata, they had to proceed with their plans without Hetty’s sage advice. I'm curious as to how the character will react to all of the changes that have occurred in her absence.

As of right now, there's no telling when the heroine will return or how the series will segue into her story. It’s possible that it'll all come into play during the series finale, and man, would that be a fitting story to close out the series with. Yet I'm hoping it happens a bit sooner than that so that Lange can show up in several of the remaining episodes.

There are still plenty of stories to tell with so little time left, and one can't help but wish we had more time with Hetty and her colleagues. But Daniela Ruah admitted it’s time to step away from Kensi Blye, and her co-stars seem ready to move on as well. It's going to be hard to say goodbye, but the send-off will be pretty sweet if it does indeed feature Linda Hunt as her fan-favorite character.

It seems like much of NCIS: Los Angeles’ 14th season will be focusing on its main relationships, whether romantic or not. While Callen and Anna prepare for their wedding and Kensi and Deeks navigate their new family, Roundtree (Caleb Castille) will be seeing someone from his past come back, and it may prove complicated for his budding relationship with Fatima.

Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill spoke to TVLine about what to expect in the new season of the CBS procedural, hinting that a former flame of Roundtree’s will be making an appearance. Considering his dynamic with Fatima and the possibility of their relationship, it will definitely shake things up:

While Gemmill didn’t spill any more details, it should definitely be interesting to see just what will happen. It sounds like this could add a complication to Roundtree’s relationship with Fatima, but it’s possible this could also be closure for him. It also sounds like the team will have to work with the FBI on a future case, which is likely where this love interest will come in.

Although Roundtree and Fatima aren’t exactly together just yet, it wouldn’t be surprising if Season 14 finally sealed it. The two have been close ever since Roundtree joined the squad in Season 12 and “Foundtree” was born. Perhaps Roundtree’s former love interest will bring some good and make the two realize just how they really feel for each other. 

Joining NCIS: LA at the end of Season 11, Caleb Castille was quickly promoted to series regular for Season 12 after Roundtree was in just three episodes. It was clear from the start that he had something special with Medalion Rahimi’s Fatima Namazi. With the duo as the newest team members on the series, it only makes sense that they formed a bond that has only grown. 

Meanwhile, as fans likely worry about a potential rift in the Foundtree relationship, they will still have plenty to look forward to in Season 14. On top of the Callanna wedding and possible Hetty return, there will also be a three-way NCIS crossover for the first time. The event is set to premiere sometime in January, likely kicking off the latter half of the seasons. Based on the thrills from the NCIS/NCIS: Hawai'i crossover that kicked off their respective seasons, the wait will surely be worth it.

The premiere of NCIS: LA’s 14th season is almost here, and wedding bells will be ringing. In the Season 13 finale of the CBS procedural, Callen proposed to Anna on the beach in front of their friends, and it was definitely one of the sweetest moments in the series. In the upcoming season, the couple will not only be dealing with work but their upcoming nuptials, and of course, both will come with complications.

Callen and Anna, or Callanna, have been together since Season 8 of NCIS: Los Angeles, so this wedding has definitely been a long time coming. As with any wedding prep, there are going to be some complications. Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill tells TVLine that Callen is not exactly the wedding type guy, and planning is not necessarily one of his strong suits:

It’s not surprising to see that he isn't into wedding planning, as is the case with a lot of couples. The fact that he wants to elope and not do anything big could put some tension on the relationship, but it’s nothing the duo can’t handle. Plus, they have other things to worry about leading up to the big day.

Although Callen and Anna have been together for a long time, the fact that this is going to be a permanent thing very soon is obviously going to be a big change for them. R. Scott Gemmill explained that Season 14 will be a continuous story for Callen and how he’s dealing with the wedding and this life-changing adventure:

Perhaps the biggest thing for the wedding is who all will be there. As Callen finds himself struggling with these new changes, the anxiety will likely only get higher as the couple starts to prepare the guest list. Gemmill has previously explained that Linda Hunt’s Hetty would have to be at the Callanna wedding, but conflict may arise:

Getting Linda Hunt back has been a priority for NCIS: LA, as Hetty is such a beloved character. With how big of a role she plays in Callen’s life, it only makes sense for her to be there on his big day. Maybe she'll even walk him down the aisle. It sounds like Hetty’s return will definitely happen; it’s just a matter of when and how.

Meanwhile, besides the highly-anticipated Callanna wedding, fans have another major event to look forward to in the upcoming season. The three-way NCIS crossover is finally happening for the first time across NCIS, LA, and Hawai’i. The episodes are set to air sometime in January 2023, which could possibly kick off the latter parts of their respective seasons.

It’s unknown when in the season Callen and Anna will get married, but it looks like fans will be able to look forward to all of their wedding planning and jitters, throughout Season 14. I'm sure it will make the wedding that much more exciting and real for both the couple and fans who have been waiting a long time for this.

Fans of NCIS: Los Angeles have long awaited the return of Linda Hunt’s Hetty, who last appeared in the Season 13 premiere and has had very little screen time in the last few seasons in general. Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill has been teasing a possible return for Hetty in Season 14, and he's now provided an update on the plan for her return. And as it turns out, it could have something to do with Callen and Anna’s wedding.

Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Anna (Bar Paly) finally got engaged in NCIS: LA’s Season 13 finale. So could the wedding bring some surprise guests? R. Scott Gemmill previewed the upcoming season with TVLine, specifically the plan to bring back Linda Hunt’s beloved character of Hetty Lange. Apparently, the idea is that Callen "realizes he has unfinished business, and wouldn’t want to get married without Hetty present." Gemmill went on to say:

I'm definitely curious to see what might happen, considering Hetty went back to Syria in the Season 13 premiere and could be in a rough spot. The wait for her return has been difficult, to say the least. Although R. Scott Gemmill confirmed that she wouldn’t be back before Season 13 ended, he's apparently been working hard to follow up Hetty's absence in Season 14. Thankfully, it now sounds like it's close to happening -- but when exactly it does is still the question. 

To be honest, it's hard to imagine Callen and Anna have their wedding without Hetty there, since she’s been such a big part of the former's life. With scheduling being figured out for Linda Hunt, one has to wonder if the show's narrative will remain fluid. I mean, should COVID setbacks keep happening, will Callen and Anna keep delaying their wedding within the show?

As mentioned, Linda Hunt has appeared sporadically throughout the last few seasons of NCIS: LA. Hetty hadn't been around at the start of Season 10 due to Hunt being involved in a car accident, though the star eventually provided a positive update around that time. Hunt was later ready to go for the final episodes of the season, though plans later changed. COVID later created concerns for the NCIS star, but she was able to come back for some big moments, like Nell and Eric’s heartfelt goodbye in the Season 12 finale. 

Hopefully, Hetty’s return will happen sooner rather than later, and Callen and Anna’s wedding will be one for the books. I'm sure many fans like myself are eager for the day that R. Scott Gemmill and co. make an official announcement about the stern and lovable character heading back to the drama series.

NCIS: Los Angeles has seen a few cast changes over the last couple of seasons, specifically with the departures of Renée Felice Smith and Barrett Foa at the end of Season 12. Now with Season 13, fans have also seen less of Linda Hunt’s Hetty Lange due to COVID safety reasons. And according to showrunner R. Scott Gemmill, they'll unfortunately have to wait even longer to see her.

R. Scott Gemmill discussed Hetty’s absence with Parade during the NCIS PaleyFest panel. Fans will at least be happy to know that there is a plan when it comes to the fan-favorite. However, Gemmill explained that the character won't come back into play until next season:

In the Season 13 premiere, Hetty returned under tense circumstances, as she butted heads with Admiral Hollis Kilbride while also tying up some loose ends. She told the admiral that she needed to return to Syria, and that's the last viewers have heard from her. One can only imagine what she’s been up to, and I'm very curious to find out. There’s no telling when exactly in Season 14 the character will return but, based on the producer's comments, it sounds like she'll definitely be back for more than just a single episode.

It pretty much goes without saying that the diminutive and intimidating operations manager is one of the show's breakout characters. In 2019, NCIS: LA star Eric Christian Olsen shared his thoughts on why Hetty is such a fan favorite and, to him, it’s all due to what co-star Linda Hunt brings to the role. Olsen noted that Lange is the “glue that holds the group together,” and I can't disagree.

Aside from its casting shuffles, NCIS: LA recently celebrated the filming of its milestone 300th episode. The episode is set to air on May 8, while the Season 13 finale is set to air on May 22. It's disappointing that we won't see the team's mother-like figure in the upcoming episodes, but either installment could at least serve as an opportunity to tease what's to come when she comes back.

Hopefully, Hetty's return is worth the wait. Whenever she’s on NCIS: LA, she's a delight, and the series is better for having her. Of course, let's also keep our fingers crossed that Linda Hunt remains safe when she finally returns to the set.

Fan-favorite NCIS: LA is now several weeks into Season 13, but many viewers are already wondering whether or not the series will be invited back to CBS for Season 14. The network was rather slow on a pick-up for the current set of episodes (it wasn’t officially renewed until late April, after franchise sibling NCIS: New Orleans got the boot), so it does beg the question: Will NCIS: LA end after this season? Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a clear answer on that just yet.

NCIS: LA just aired its fifth episode, so while it’s still pretty early in its season, you can bet that those who love the popular military procedural aren’t the only ones wondering about Season 14. As noted, the cast and crew had to do quite a bit of waiting and wondering while the network decided on whether or not we’d be able to continue following Sam, Callen, Kensi, Deeks, and the rest of the OSP team. When asked by TV Line recently about the show possibly ending after this season, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill said: 

Yeah, this is always the tricky bit, especially with procedural shows like NCIS: LA. While there are some series where the showrunner goes into the process with a set number of seasons as the end goal, and already has the major beats of that full story mapped out, we’ve seen that a series like this tends to last for as long as everyone is still interested in making it and watching it. So, while Gemmill and his team are considering what moves they might make were they to be told that things were coming to an end, if they haven’t been filled in on the future of NCIS: LA yet, they can’t quite begin to lay that groundwork in the episodes.

It can certainly feel like a bit of a nightmare to hear that one of your favorite shows has been cancelled, but imagine how much worse it would be if that news came down after the most recent season ended, or when things were so far along that it was nearly impossible to wrap things up correctly. As R. Scott Gemmill noted, the best thing would be for them to hear about the cancellation as early as possible, so that they can work on making the end of the season work as a real finale. I mean, after watching NCIS: LA for 13 seasons, the fans deserve to at least know whether or not Kensi and Deeks are gonna have a kid before the credits roll for the last time, right?

NCIS: Los Angeles is only days away from returning from its longest-ever hiatus, and the Season 12 premiere will feature Linda Hunt as Hetty. The mysterious Hetty has dropped in and out of the LA branch of NCIS over the years, with Hunt making fewer appearances following an accident that required her to take some time off to recover. NCIS: LA showrunner R. Scott Gemmill revealed how the show is including the 75-year-old actress to launch Season 12.

Precautions to protect the casts and crews of TV shows large and small have changed productions across the board, and NCIS: Los Angeles is no exception. In the case of Linda Hunt, NCIS: LA found an ideal way for her to film for the first episode of Season 12 without putting herself at undue risk: filming her scenes outside in the driveway of her own home! Speaking with TVLine, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill explained why NCIS: LA went the extra mile, saying:

The good news is that if ever there was an NCIS: LA character who could appear in unexpected places for befuddling scenes, that character would be Hetty. There are generally more questions than answers about anything she's up to at any given time. Based on the episode description for the Season 12 premiere, called "The Bear," Hetty won't suddenly be ready to spill all her secrets from Linda Hunt's driveway.

In "The Bear," Hetty will give Nell a cryptic assignment, while Callen and Sam are working to track down a Russian bomber that went missing over U.S. soil. NCIS: Los Angeles showrunner R. Scott Gemmill teased what this will mean for the show in a chat with TV Insider, sharing that Nell "finds herself being sucked back in" while Hetty heads off for "a bit of a misadventure." That sounds like Hetty!

A big question for the rest of the wait for NCIS: LA Season 12 is what Hetty will say to Nell to get her back in the thick of the action. Nell tried to resign from NCIS back in Season 11, which could have resulted in a major cast departure on a show that rarely loses stars. Nell ultimately didn't leave for good, and she has had a special relationship with Hetty. Whatever Hetty has to say, it sounds like fans will lose Hetty for a while during her mysterious "misadventure" while getting Nell back.

Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting the NCIS universe in ways beyond filming Linda Hunt in her driveway. It seems the LA-based show will be handling the pandemic differently than NCIS and NCIS: New Orleans, with the former avoiding the pandemic altogether early on by going on a blast to the past while the latter will feature a COVID storyline impacting Loretta. NCIS: Los Angeles will play the pandemic as if the world has already moved past it. That said, the show will still tackle police reform as an ongoing issue.

NCIS: Los Angeles is returning to CBS for Season 12, despite a longer-than-usual hiatus that will keep new episodes off the airwaves well beyond the usual September premiere. Fortunately, some details have begun to emerge about the twelfth season, revealing that police reform could mean big changes for Deeks. Although he has worked with the NCIS team in LA since the beginning of Season 2, he has officially remained a detective with the LAPD. Apparently, that could change in Season 12.

Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill revealed how police reform will impact Deeks in NCIS: LA Sesason 12, telling TVLine:

CBS has brought in a law enforcement advisory group to help guide the NCIS franchise along with CBS' other big dramas moving forward, and real-life police reform will apparently mix things up for Deeks on NCIS: Los Angeles. The big question is what it could mean if his job being in jeopardy results in him being fired.

On the one hand, being forced out of the LAPD could theoretically result in the long-awaited transition of Detective Deeks into NCIS Agent Deeks, which would allow the show to deliver a big change without actually shaking up the status quo all that much. On the other hand, Deeks' job in jeopardy happens at a time when he and Kensi are considering what they want for the future on top of problems at the bar, and he'll reportedly face a major decision in Season 12.

Deeks and Kensi have been flirting with the idea of having kids since before they were even engaged. If this turns out to be a plot for them in Season 12,  Deeks could be the one leaving the dangerous job rather than expecting Kensi to. That said, there would obviously be complications if Kensi plans to become pregnant, rather than Team Densi adopting to allow her to remain in the field.

It's also worth noting that if Deeks and Kensi decide to have their own child, they should probably get a move on. After all, the original NCIS is heading into Season 18. If NCIS: LA is also planning on running for many years beyond Season 12, they can't just put it off forever! Of course, the agents (and Deeks for now) of NCIS: LA will have more than police reform to deal with.

NCIS is reportedly going to explore a pandemic story in early 2021, after a somewhat bizarre arc for Gibbs set in the past to start Season 18, and NCIS: New Orleans will address the pandemic as well. Since all three NCIS series share a universe (although they cross over far less frequently than the shared TV universes of One Chicago on NBC and Grey's Anatomy/Station 19 on ABC), it stands to reason that NCIS: LA might have devote some significant stories to COVID.

The good news is that NCIS: LA has started production on Season 12, and the show is expected to return in November. That's well after almost every other season of NCIS: LA, with Season 9 previously premiering the latest with an early October launch. Still, it wasn't that long ago when the entire fall TV season was uncertain following the early shutdowns in the spring. Like many other TV shows, NCIS: Los Angeles shut down production early in the 2019-2020 TV season. The series was two episodes shy of completing its entire episode order when the Season 11 finale aired. While NCIS: LA got an unintended season finale, the episode still managed to up the ante. Upon leaving viewers with a pretty decent cliffhanger, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill revealed what fans can expect from the drama after the Season 11 finale.

NCIS: Los Angeles’ Season11 finale, called “Code of Conduct,” saw the team go up against a new kind of antagonist following Sam and Callen’s briefing on Special Warfare Chief Petty Officer Thomas Argento. Basically, their chief was being accused of international war crimes after allegations suggested he murdered an unarmed and unconscious prisoner. However, Argento believed himself to be above the law due to personal connections to a senator. Sam and Callen were able to arrest Argento, but there was still a lot of unfinished business between them.

Could the storyline finish playing out in a potential Season 12? Here’s what R. Scott Gemmill told TVLine about the planned storyline:

As it turns out, Argento has “no intentions of going down without a fight,” according to R. Scott Gemmill. That makes a lot of sense considering how confident he is despite his trial. Having those D.C. connections is a huge advantage for him and I have no doubt that he’ll be using it in his favor.

That said, it doesn’t seem like Sam and Callen will rest until they dole out some justice, though Argento won’t be making it easy for the team. Here’s what R. Scott Gemmill says of Argento’s nefarious plans:

Fans of NCIS: LA can expect the unfilmed episodes of Season 11 to be absorbed into Season 12, meaning that Argento will definitely be facing Sam and Callen again at some point in the future. Executive producer Frank Military confirmed to TV Insider that Argento’s “morality battle with Sam” and trial will play out, but that it won’t happen in the first episode of next season should the series return.

NCIS may have the craziest twist to build on this fall season, but that doesn't mean the spinoffs don't have other awesome things happening as well. NCIS: Los Angeles is continuing its JAG connection (which could lead to some other exciting things) and fans are going to continue to get some development on the relationship of Kensi and Deeks.

There's even a chance the topic of babies will be brought up in Season 11. Executive producer R. Scott Gemmill definitely hinted the current season will have an update on their relationship early on in the season, and that will definitely show fans where things are headed.

So where does a baby come into this? R. Scott Gemmill didn't use the term baby, though it's hard to rule out that's off the table as the writers decide what to do next with NCIS: Los Angeles' newlyweds. Having kids is a common thing most couples discuss ahead of marriage, so it would be silly to think the two haven't at least broached the topic to this point.

Of course, starting a family isn't as easy a decision for Deeks and Kensi as a normal couple. It's one thing to start a family, but obviously quite a different conversation when the two are in the line of work they're in. Gemmill told Parade that Kensi in particular will realize things could change for her quite a bit going forward, and she'll definitely experience the difference between single Kensi and married Kensi sometime around Episode 2.

It will almost definitely be a lingering question NCIS: Los Angeles fans will want to see answered, and one they could ultimately be disappointed by. Having a child may not make sense for the two-some at the moment, and the two may ultimately decide it's just not in the cards for them. The two could also look into alternative methods like adoption, which would give them a child but not necessarily keep Kensi out of the field.

NCIS: Los Angeles Star Teases 'Bloody Brilliant' Season 11 Episode Ahead

The NCIS franchise on CBS was brought full circle at the end of the 2018-2019 TV season when David James Elliott and Catherine Bell reprised their JAG roles for NCIS: Los Angeles. None of the NCIS series that are so successful today would even exist without JAG, but the appearances of Harm and Mac on NCIS: LA didn't reveal that the duo had lived up to what could have been a happily-ever-after in the JAG series finale back in 2005.

The good news is that both David James Elliott and Catherine Bell will be back on NCIS: Los Angeles in the upcoming Season 11 premiere, and they'll actually meet in the flesh rather than just see each other via video stream this time. But will NCIS: LA give Mac and Harm their happy ending?

Fans will have to wait to find out for sure, but NCIS: LA showrunner R. Scott Gemmill teased some of what to expect from the JAG veterans in Season 11 to TVLine, saying this:

Well, JAG viewers may have gotten to watch Mac and Harm develop their dynamic over the ten seasons of that show, but it's been well over a decade since it went off the air. In NCIS: LA Season 10, Mac revealed to Hetty that she hadn't seen Harm in nine years.

They had stayed together for a time, with the result of the legendary coin toss meaning that Harm would pass on a JAG job in London to follow Mac to San Diego, but retirement from the fight didn't suit him, and he had to get back in action. He was out at sea when he and Mac locked eyes again, via video conference.

Both seem to be doing what they need to be doing, but it has sadly kept them apart, and the reunion that was a bummer to fans who imagined Mac and Harm having happily ridden off into the sunset was arguably realistic. They were driven by their careers. Still, as Mac said, the final chapter of their story hasn't been written yet.

Hey, if that JAG revival does happen -- which would make it a revival launched from the spinoff of the spinoff that it originally launched back in 2003 -- with the original stars on board, that would surely mean they'd have to repair their relationship, right? The ratings for the JAG reunion episode of NCIS: Los Angeles were solid, so maybe there is the chance for more.

R. Scott Gemmill went on to talk about the big scene when Mac and Harm finally meet again:

NCIS: LA did just let Kensi and Deeks finally tie the knot, and the inevitable disasters that struck their wedding weren't enough to stop the nuptials. It's possible that Eric and Nell inherited the relationship drama from Kensi and Deeks, what with one of them not being around for a big chunk of Season 11, so perhaps there would be room for whatever NCIS: LA has in store for Harm and Mac.

NCIS: Los Angeles Season 11 Stars Filming With Haircuts And Handstands

Find out when NCIS: Los Angeles returns to CBS for Season 11 on Sunday, September 29 at 9:30 p.m. ET. The premiere is only days following the premieres of the original NCIS (hopefully with a bunch of Ziva reveals and maybe even some Tony/Ziva) and NCIS: New Orleans.

JAG fans will recall the defining moment of the finale. It occurred when Harm and Mac let a coin toss decide their fate. In the series finale, Harm and Mac announced they were engaged to be married. That blissful announcement meant the two had to decide whose career would continue and whose would end.

They decided to let fate have its way. During JAG’s final seconds, Mac called “tails” as the coin flipped through the air. Harm and Mac both looked on anxiously. That is when the coin stopped, and the credits rolled.

Viewers never learned who won the toss. Thus, leaving a question only a return appearance by the characters could entirely resolve. Now, they are about to get an answer. NCIS: Los Angeles’ showrunner R. Scott Gemmill told TVLine:

How exciting is this? JAG fans have gone almost 15 years without knowing. Now, they are finally about to learn the truth. If that is not enough to get JAG fans excited to tune into the special two-part event on NCIS: Los Angeles, nothing can. Based on both characters being called in for the case, it seems neither retired.

Based on the details that have been released so far, it is hard to guess what happened or whether the two have gone their separate ways. Did what seemed like a feel-good ending turn sour between the pair? They looked so in love in the finale’s last moments.

Maybe they ended up getting commissions that kept them closer together. Or did the one who "lost" try to go with what the coin decided and end up missing their career too much, leading to the conclusion that they wanted their job more than their relationship? So many unanswered questions.

Hopefully there is a good explanation. JAG fans had every reason to believe that Harm and Mac walked off into the sunset together. To find out they have imagined a scenario that never came to be could be devastating.

Answers are coming. NCIS: Los Angeles’ R. Scott Gemmill did not reveal which half will contain the reveal. Harm will make his debut first via the penultimate episode NCIS: Los Angeles Season 10. Mac will appear in the finale. Hetty reaches out to her for help against the same threat that Harm is working against.

The showrunner's tease only adds fuel to the anticipation. The "best of the past" and a look at the future? Does that mean JAG fans will get a taste of what happily married life has entailed for Harm and Mac? Depending on how things go, the results of that coin toss could be explored in a revival. Great news! Hetty Lange didn't just return to NCIS: Los Angeles to crash then officiate Kensi and Deeks' wedding. Actress Linda Hunt was very much missed through most of Season 10 when she was recovering from a car accident last summer. It would be understandable if she returned just for that wedding episode and then left again to continue focusing on her health. But it sounds like that's not the case, at least according to showrunner R. Scott Gemmill:

Excellent! As long as Linda Hunt is feeling up to it, fans would be more than happy to see more of Hetty. The big Kensi and Densi wedding episode was Episode 17. Season 10 will reportedly have the usual 24 episodes. So hopefully that means we see a lot more of Hetty this season, as opposed to just seeing more of her in Season 11 -- if CBS even renews the show for Season 11. (It will, won't it?)

NCIS: LA kept Hetty's return a big surprise for the wedding episode. R. Scott Gemmill shared more with TV Insider on how they got Linda Hunt to come back for the big event:

The Densi wedding episode was the perfect time for her Season 10 return. In addition to Hetty, the wedding had an emotional reveal for what was in that box. Now Kensi and Deeks are headed out on their honeymoon, which apparently they each view very differently.

It's not exactly clear how much we'll see of Hetty for the rest of the season, but we do know the next episode is Episode 18 of 24 and it's called "Born to Run." Watch it play out Sunday, March 24 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS, as NCIS: Los Angeles continues to air for a few more weeks in midseason 2019.

NCIS: Los Angeles is no stranger to episodes that leave audiences hanging from the end of one season to the beginning of the next, and the fates of some of the biggest characters are often in question. The Season 9 finale upped the ante by placing all four main characters in an SUV and then blowing it up on an unsanctioned mission south of the border. Now, only weeks before the Season 10 premiere, showrunner R. Scott Gemmill has explained why NCIS: Los Angeles went with that Season 9 cliffhanger:

Instead of waiting to find out which of the four leads would successfully renegotiate their contracts and which would take their leave of NCIS: Los Angeles, R. Scott Gemmill just went ahead and put them all in mortal jeopardy. On the one hand, the cliffhanger meant that fans had to wait for clues about what's to come and whether their favorites survived the initial blast. On the other hand, the explosion meant that Gemmill could kill off any characters whose actors decided to depart and thus spare fans the situation that is going to impact the next season of Chicago Fire due to one actor's decision to leave after the finale aired.

Fortunately, photos from the Season 10 premiere and a recent trailer proved that Callen, Sam, Kensi, and Deeks all survive the SUV explosion (although Hidoko's fate is still a mystery). The description of the premiere -- forebodingly called "To Live and Die in Mexico" -- states that Deeks will be unconscious in the episode, but we now know that he'll be far more injured than he would have been if he'd just taken a quick conk to the head that knocked him out of commission for a few scenes. He'll suffer a traumatic brain injury. At least we know there will be at one happy twist for Deeks in Season 10!

R. Scott Gemmill went on his comments to TVLine to reveal that Deeks won't be the only one in trouble, as "the others suffer injuries that are certainly life-threatening as well." Callen, Sam, and Kensi will all at least be conscious in the aftermath of the explosion. That said, the trailer reveals Callen having breathing problems and not looking too great overall, with a worried Sam at his side, so my money is on Callen being in the most trouble after Deeks. As if the injuries aren't enough, the agents are still being hunted by the cartel that tried to blow them up!

Their escape from Mexico won't be easy, and the way they left on their unsanctioned mission means that they'll need all the help they can get from a certain new character once they make it home. The Season 9 finale of NCIS: Los Angeles left the lives of the four lead characters in jeopardy. Some early looks at the Season 10 premiere revealed certain characters we don't have to worry about surviving the explosion. They may be in pretty rough shape in the first episode back, but at least two of them have a happy event in their not-too-distant futures. Kensi and Deeks are finally going to tie the knot! NCIS: LA executive producer R. Scott Gemmill revealed this about what's in store for Kensi and Deeks in Season 10:

Between the uncertainty about Deeks' future at NCIS, their disagreements about how to handle a future family, and the overall stress of work at NCIS, Kensi and Deeks went through more than one rough patch in Season 9. In the second-to-last episode of the season, Kensi ended their engagement when she couldn't promise Deeks that she would give up her job at NCIS to have children with him. It was a heartbreaking turn of events, especially given how the previous season had ended with them happily engaged. Thanks to R. Scott Gemmill in his comments to EW, we now know that these two crazy kids will mend fences and get married before the end of Season 10.

A big question now is what happens to resolve the significant issue of starting a family together. Did the near-death experiences in the end of Season 9 and beginning of Season 10 convince Kensi that she's willing to give it up to have kids with Deeks? Or did all the danger and violence convince Deeks that kids don't need to be a priority? Did they compromise and decide to expand their family in ways that wouldn't put Kensi out of commission for the better part of a year? The show may not deliver all of these answers in the Season 10 premiere, especially since what we've seen of the premiere so far indicates that Kensi and Deeks (along with Sam and Callen) will be busy trying to escape Mexico.

The lovebirds and Co. will undoubtedly have a lot going on unrelated to the wedding as well. A great guest star is reprising his role for Season 10, and the new season will see the introduction of a new deputy director, who may come in very handy (or perhaps turn into a surprising hindrance as time passes) in the aftermath of the Mexico fiasco. The good news for fans is that Kensi and Deeks will apparently live up to their "sunshine and gunpowder" reputation when they finally get hitched!

The finale arc of NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 was one giant emotional rollercoaster as the NCIS team went from another day of fighting crime to desperately trying to rescue Michelle, then trying to contain Sam after they failed to find Michelle in time to save her. The finale ended with Sam finally accepting Michelle's death and taking a leave of absence from NCIS to go be with his children, presumably until the show picks back up in Season 9. According to showrunner R. Scott Gemmill, however, Sam may never return to his old self on the team after what happened in the Season 8 finale. Gemmill had this to say about Sam in Season 9:

From the very beginning of NCIS: Los Angeles -- in fact, going all the way back to the backdoor pilot on NCIS -- Sam has been at the heart of the team. Even being badly tortured back in Season 4 wasn't enough to throw him off his game once his body recovered, and the threat to his son in Season 7 didn't even scare him away from continuing his career at NCIS. Now, it seems that the murder of his wife is finally what will make Sam question his future on the team. R. Scott Gemmill's comments indicate that Sam might not intend to spend the rest of his career as an NCIS agent.

LL Cool J is obviously a big part of NCIS: Los Angeles, so Sam probably isn't going to be written out of the show unless LL Cool J wants out. Still, the death of Michelle may be the one thing that changes him forever in a way that all the NCIS team banter and bro love with Callen won't be able to fix. In fact, R. Scott Gemmill went on in his chat with TV Guide to reveal that Sam has been absent from the team for months, ever since the end of the Season 8 finale, and he only returns because Callen needs him to help deal with a nuclear threat from North Korea.

It should be interesting to see how the folks at NCIS: Los Angeles carry this storyline throughout Season 9. R. Scott Gemmill was clear that Sam's issues won't be resolved within the span of the Season 9 premiere, but NCIS: LA isn't always the most consistent at showing the repercussions of certain plot twists outside of sweeps episodes. That said, there was a change in how arcs were handled when former showrunner Shane Brennan handed the reins of the series over to Gemmill. Perhaps how Sam handles his devastation will be unlike anything we've ever seen on the NCIS team.

Only time will tell. The Season 9 premiere of NCIS: Los Angeles will air on Sunday, October 1 at 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS. We already know that Deeks will be in a sticky situation of his own thanks to a brand new character. It should be worth tuning in. NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 came to a shocking conclusion back in May. The last couple of episodes featured the death of Michelle, the departure of Sam to deal with his wife's passing, and the two NCIS lovebirds finally getting engaged. Yes, Deeks and Kensi had a happy ending to Season 8, but they'll run into a rough patch in Season 9 when Deeks faces some unexpected challenges from within the unit. A former Secret Service agent by the name of Shay Mosely takes over the team, and she's not too happy to have Deeks around. NCIS: LA showrunner R. Scott Gemmill revealed what's in store, saying this:

Well, for any NCIS: Los Angeles fans who have been waiting for the other shoe to drop about partners Kensi and Deeks romantically involved, Season 9 will apparently see the shoe dropping hard. It hasn't been difficult to understand how they've managed their relationship so far; Hetty has always given her agents leeway as long they get the job done, and Deeks is technically a cop, so the romance technically hasn't been between two NCIS agents. Judging by R. Scott Gemmill's comments, Shay Mosely won't be quite so understanding, and she'll even try to ship Deeks back to LAPD.

While this isn't the first time that NCIS: Los Angeles has toyed with separating Deeks from NCIS and sending him back to his job as a cop, the stakes are higher now. For one thing, he and Kensi are planning on getting married, and that could have led to problems even in NCIS. For another thing, he's in a pretty sticky situation with LAPD Detective Whiting, who was last seen blackmailing Deeks to get him to help her root out dirty coops. He can't exactly go against her as long as she holds his confession of killing his first (and very dirty) partner over his head, and she might be all too eager to take him from Shay Mosely.

There's also the point that Shay Mosely will be around a lot. Nia Long was cast as a series regular for the role, so even if she is unsuccessful in sending Deeks back to LAPD in the premiere, she may be a thorn in his (and Kensi's) side throughout Season 9. A lot may depend on when Hetty returns. R. Scott Gemmill also revealed to TV Guide that Hetty will be out of the picture in the Season 9 premiere, having officially retired from NCIS. She's actually gone rogue in the wake of the loss of Granger (due to the tragic passing of actor Miguel Ferrer), so we can bet that she'll be back. For Deeks' sake, we can only hope that she won't be gone for too long. Perhaps more questions will be answered sooner rather than later.
