The horror genre's renaissance is showing no signs of slowing down, to the joy of fans like me. Some of the best horror movies have released new sequels, including Wes Craven's Scream. The iconic horror franchise has just released a seventh movie, with Neve Campbell returning as Sidney Prescott. She recently offered her take on which Ghostface kill was the most brutal, and I think she's pretty spot on.

What we know about Scream 7 has been limited, but that'll change as it hits theaters this weekend. We've seen a ton of gnarly kills throughout the franchise (which is streaming with a Paramount+ subscription), and during a conversation with MTV Campbell revealed which one stood out the most to her. In her words:

Points were made. While Rose McGowan's Tatum didn't get stabbed by Ghostface in the first movie, her death was pretty gnarly. While her trying to escape through the cat door was fodder for jokes in Scary Movie, seeing her head get crushed is disturbing. And it's clearly stuck with Campbell after all these years.

Tatum's death was definitely a memorable one, although there have been some other super violent murders since then. Dewey's death in the 2022 movie was chilling, as he was disemboweled by Ghostface in the hospital. Then there's Olivia Morris from Scream 4, who was stabbed over and over again until her entire bedroom was covered in blood. Those are probably the three most brutal in my opinion, but the seventh movie might change that.

Clearly Tatum has been on the mind for Campbell, especially since that's what Sidney named her daughter in Scream 7. It's a sweet nod to Rose McGowan's legacy in the first movie, as well as the last true friend that the iconic final girl. And the footage from the new movie also shows that Sidney talks about her childhood friend in an interview with Gale Weathers.

It should be fascinating what Kevin Williamson brings to the new Scream movie. He wrote the first two films, and has been around as an EP for the more recent titles. But the seventh one is the first time he's directing an installment of the beloved slasher property.

Scream 7 is in theaters now as part of the 2026 movie release list. The pressure is on for it to deliver, but with Neve Campbell back as Sidney, I have a feeling longtime fans will show up at the theater.

What we know about Scream 7 is limited, but the inclusion of dead legacy characters like Dewey, Stu, and Roman seem to hint that it'll explore Sidney's history. The Scream 7 trailer showed us that Sidney's daughter Tatum will be a big part of the story, and in a recent BTS clip from ET, Campbell spoke about why that new character was named after Rose McGowan's from the original. In her words:

I mean, same. This is a great nod to Wes Craven's 1996 original movie, where Tatum was an instant scene-stealer and had one of the most iconic death scenes in the franchise's history. After the seventh movie's trailer was released, Rose McGowan broke her silence on Sidney's daughter being named Tatum, with the Charmed alum appreciating this nod to her legendary performance. And it's nice hearing how much Campbell loves this choice as well.

Neve Campbell is one of the most iconic scream queens ever, and she obviously understands the Scream franchise more than almost anyone. So her pride in Tatum being honored is pretty contagious. As a reminder, you can re-watch the first trailer for Scream 7 below:

Of course, this isn' the only time that Tatum has been referenced in the Scream franchise after her iconic death. In the fifth movie, her ashes can actually be seen in Dewey's trailer, further showing how much her death has continued to haunt the survivors she left behind. And I have to assume that Ghostface will be taunting Sidney about her best friend's death during their confrontations in the seventh film.

I can't wait to see what's going to go down with Scream 7. The franchise has been guarding spoilers since the beginning, and the marketing for Kevin Williamson's upcoming sequel has definitely been keeping its cards close to the chest. Luckily the wait is nearly over.

McGowan spoke to ScreamObsessed and was asked about this name choice, responding:

Honestly, same. As a hardcore Scream fan, I thought this nod to McGowan was a lovely tribute to the fans, and also made sense narratively. This isn't the first time that Tatum was referenced in the newer movies; her ashes were seen in Dewey's house in the 2022 sequel. So while the Charmed star might have only appeared in one Scream movie, her legacy has continued to be felt.

The first Scream 7 trailer definitely piqued the interest of horror fans, especially those of us who have spent years watching every new installment of the beloved franchise. It seems like the story will be very much focused on Sidney and her daughter Tatum, who must quickly be trained to be a fighter like her mother. And I'm curious to see what references to Rose McGowan's character might come throughout the course of the film.

With OG Scream writer Kevin Williamson directing the seventh movie, it does seem like it'll have at on of connective tissue to the 1996 original. Case in point: a number of dead legacy characters are somehow expected to appear in the mysterious slasher. That includes David Arquette's Dewey Riley, Matthew Lillard's Stu Macher, and Scott Foley's Roman Bridger. Could we also get a surprise appearance from Rose McGowan? We'll have to see but just about anything seems possible.

While the last two Scream movies featured a vision/ghost of Billy Loomis, it should be fascinating to see how the dead legacy characters somehow appear in the seventh film. Will we get ghosts, flashbacks, or something else entirely? I can't wait to find out.

Between the late 1990s and early 2000s, there were few channels as popular as The WB, and that was thanks in part to the network’s unique programming block that included shows like Charmed (which was later rebooted), which had great viewer ratings and was beloved by its target audience of teenage and young adult viewers. But, a lot of time has passed since the fantasy drama about a family of good witches aired its final episode in May 2006, and some former fans might be wondering what the large cast has been up to all these years.

Well, no need to cast a spell or look into a crystal ball, because we have put together a comprehensive list of the Charmed cast and how they’ve kept themselves busy for the past decade-and-a-half. 

Shannen Doherty (Prue Halliwell)

For the first three seasons of Charmed’s eight-season run, Shannen Doherty sat at the top of the show’s cast as Prue Halliwell, the oldest (and most powerful) of the three sisters. One of the most notable TV actresses of the 1990s, thanks to shows like Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed, Doherty has remained busy on the small screen as the years have gone by with a mixture of made-for-TV movies like No One Would Tell, Dying to Belong, and List of a Lifetime, as well as appearances on shows like Heathers, Riverdale, and BH90210 (another reboot of the iconic ‘90s program).

Holly Marie Combs (Piper Halliwell)

Throughout Charmed’s entire run, Holly Marie Combs played Piper Halliwell, the second oldest of the three main sister witches. Already a TV star before joining The WB fan-favorite thanks to a major role on Picket Fences, Combs has continued to have success on the small screen. In more recent years, Combs has appeared on Pretty Little Liars, Hell’s Kitchen, and most recently, Grey’s Anatomy in 2019.

Alyssa Milano (Phoebe Halliwell)

To fans of Charmed, Alyssa Milano will always be Phoebe Halliwell, but the prolific actress had a great deal of success both before and after playing a good witch. MIlano’s career, which kicked off with a starring role on the ‘80s sitcom Who’s the Boss?, has taken her talents far and wide the past few decades, with more recent stops on shows like Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, Insatiable, and The Now, as well as the 2022 Netflix movie Brazen.

Rose McGowan (Paige Matthews)

Rose McGowan didn’t join the Charmed cast as Paige Matthews until the show’s fourth season, but she more than made her mark on the smash hit series. Since the series concluded in May 2006, McGowan has gone on to appear in movies like Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 double-feature Grindhouse, The Sound, and a 2018 short film titled Indecision IV. And, even though she hasn’t appeared in a movie or scripted TV show since 2018, McGowan has remained busy as a vocal activist in recent years.

Brian Krause (Leo Wyatt)

Brian Krause played Leo Wyatt, the Halliwell sisters’ “whitelighter” for the duration of Charmed’s run as well as Piper’s husband later on. Although he has mostly appeared in movies like Poseidon Rex, Plan 9, and The Demonologist in more recent years, Krause has also had leading roles on TV shows like First Light and Cypher, as well as one-off appearances on the likes of Mad Men, Castle, and the Dynasty reboot, which currently airs on The CW.

Julian McMahon (Cole Turner/Belthazor)

Cole Turner, a.k.a. Belthazor, the on-again, off-again big bad and love interest of Phoebe Halliwell, is portrayed by Golden Globe-nominated actor Julian McMahon. Ever since departing the Charmed cast in 2005, McMahon has found success just about everywhere he turns, whether it be on shows like Nip/Tuck, Runaways, or Dick Wolf’s FBI franchise, having appeared on all three titles in the series. McMahon's film work includes the portrayal of iconic Marvel villain Dr. Doom in Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer, as well as the 2018 horror thriller Monster Party.

Dorian Gregory (Darryl Morris)

For all but the last season of Charmed, Dorian Gregory took on the role of Darryl Morris, a lieutenant with the San Francisco Police Department who helps the Halliwell sisters in a variety of ways. In the years since departing the series, Gregory has appeared on shows like Las Vegas, Without a Trace, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. In 2021, he showed up in the made-for-TV movie The Wrong Real Estate Agent as well as Twice Bitten.

Kaley Cuoco (Billie Jenkins)

Kaley Cuoco joined the Charmed cast as Billie Jenkins, a powerful character who can bend reality, in the show’s final season. Just one year after she concluded her one-season run on the hit show, Cuoco joined the cast of The Big Bang Theory and quickly became one of the brightest stars on TV. 

Once that show ended its historic run in 2019, Cuoco didn’t waste any time with her next move, which included providing the voice of the titular character in the adult animation series Harley Quinn, as well as playing the lead on the dramedy series The Flight Attendant, both of which are streaming on HBO Max. Cuoco, who also serves as the spokesperson for Priceline.com, will soon appear in Kevin Hart’s The Man from Toronto.

Ted King (Andy Trudeau)

Ted King, who previously went by T.W. King, appeared on Charmed Season 1 as Detective Andrew “Andy” Trudeau with the San Francisco Police Department. The ill-fated character wouldn’t make it out the show’s freshman season unscathed, but his career has done just fine since. Not long after he concluded his work on the series, he landed one-off roles on shows like JAG, Frasier, and even appeared as one of the man guest stars of Sex and the City. In 2021, King joined the cast of the long-running soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful.

James Read (Victor Bennett)

James Read wasn’t the first actor to portray the Halliwell sisters’ father (that honor goes to Anthony Denison), but since he played the character the most on Charmed, we’ll include him on this list.  The veteran of film, TV, and theatre, has continued to show up in various projects over the course of the past 16 years, with his most recent being gigs on daytime soap operas like General Hospital and Days of our Lives, on which he last appeared in 2021.

Jennifer Rhodes (Penny Halliwell)

Jennifer Rhodes appeared in a total of 15 episodes of Charmed  throughout the show’s run as Penelope "Penny" Halliwell, the mother figure of the Halliwell sisters who helped raise them following the death of their birth mother. Throughout the 2010s, Rhodes found success appearing on shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Mary + Jane, Teachers, and most recently, a 2019 episode of Grace and Frankie.

Finola Hughes (Patty Halliwell)

Patricia “Patty” Halliwell was the mother (who died years before the events of the series) of all four sisters on Charmed, and was portrayed by Finola Hughes. In the decade-and-a-half since the show concluded its run in 2006, the Staying Alive star has made appearances on a number of different soap operas including All My Children, General Hospital (where she's played Anna Devane on and off since 1985), and General Hospital: Night Shift, as well other series like Beware the Batman, Granite Flats, and CSI: NY. In 2020, she directed an episode of the Freeform series Good Trouble.

Rebecca Balding (Elise Rothman)

Joining the Charmed cast in the show’s fourth season, Rebecca Balding took on the role of Elise Rothman, Phoebe Halliwell’s editor and later close confidant. Balding retired from acting in 2006, with Charmed being her final performance. Prior to that, Balding appeared in movies like The Gathering and the 1981 horror film The Boogens. Balding also popped up on shows like ER, Beverly Hills, 90210, and MacGyver over the years.

Billy Drago (Barbas)

Billy Drago made appearances here and there as Barbas, the Demon of Fear, throughout most of Charmed’s run on The WB, with his final episode coming in the Season 7 opener. Over the years, Drago, who passed away in 2019, appeared in movies like The Untouchables, Dark Moon Rising, Pale Rider, and dozens of other productions. He also showed up on shows like Friday the 13th: The Series, Supernatural, and Masters of Horror.

Drew Fuller (Chris Halliwell)

And then there is Drew Fuller, who portrayed Chris Halliwell, the adult son of Leo and Piper who came back in time to prevent a great deal of misfortune from falling on his family (and humanity). Following his run as a member of the Charmed cast, Fuller went on to show up in movies like Fatal Instinct, The Night Before, and Beyond Brotherhood, as well as TV shows like NCIS: Los Angeles, Longmire, and Love, Fall, and Order in 2019, his most recent appearance.

It’s a good time to be a horror fan, as the genre has been consistently putting out acclaimed new projects. This includes long-awaited sequels like the upcoming Scream movie from Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. And a new video from the slasher features a fun nod to Rose McGowan’s iconic death in the original movie.

Wes Craven’s 1996 Scream movie changed the genre forever, and kickstarted a beloved property that’s about to release its whopping fifth installment. From the looks of it, the 2022 sequel will feature a ton of connections to Craven’s original movie, and the latest clip highlighting the new cast seemingly gives a nod to Rose McGowan’s death as Tatum in the garage. Did you catch it? While teasing how the new characters are connected to the events of the 1996 Scream, we see some of the fun visual homages to Wes Craven’s beloved original. That includes a scene in a garage that feels connected to Tatum’s iconic death via doggy door. Let’s break it all down.

The moment in question comes at around the 1:08 mark of the video, where we see Jasmin Savoy Brown’s Mindy speaking to her girlfriend Amber (Mikey Madison). She surprises her from behind a refrigerator, which seems to harken back to the iconic garage scene from the original Scream. And smart money says this is just the tip of the iceberg regarding visual homages.

Rose McGowan gave an iconic performance in the original Scream, although Tatum wasn’t lucky enough to survive her own encounter with Ghostface. She died after putting up a strong fight in the garage of Stu’s house, meeting a grisly fate in the process. As a reminder, you can check out that sequence below,

While Tatum perished facing off against Ghostface in the garage, it should be interesting to see how the new characters ultimately fare in the new Scream. In addition to legacy characters like Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, the directors assembled a killer cast of young talent to play Woodsboro teenagers. Familiar faces include 13 Reasons Why star Dylan Minnette, In the Heights’ Melissa Barrera, and You’s Jenna Ortega. 

The new Scream marks the first installment release since the death of the legendary Wes Craven. And while actors like David Arquette have been open about how this made filming an emotional experience, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett seemingly proved themselves as giant fans of Craven’s work. It’s that respect for the original that helped convince Neve Campbell to return as Sidney.

“Do you like scary movies?” If so, you’ve most likely seen the Scream franchise. The original Scream is amongst some of the best horror movies, and it’s been well over 2 decades since the creation of Woodsboro and the terror-inducing Ghostface. In anticipation of the upcoming Scream 5, we’re taking a look at the OG Scream cast, including the icons that are Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, and Skeet Ulrich, and where they are now all these years later.

Neve Campbell (Sidney)

Portraying possibly one of horror’s most impossible heroines to kill, Neve Campbell played the part of Sidney Prescott in all four previous Scream films. She proved herself to be the ultimate final girl by defeating the ever-evolving Ghostface time and time again. The scream queen is still alive in the Scream universe and Campbell will be reprising her role as Sidney in the upcoming 5th film, simply titled Scream after the original that premiered over 25 years prior.

In addition to her final girl status that Scream has awarded her over the years, she has also cemented her place in ‘90s horror with her roles in the iconic Wild Things and The Craft. Currently, though, she has been cast in a leading role for the upcoming series The Lincoln Lawyer, which is expected to be released to Netflix for streaming sometime in 2022.

Courteney Cox (Gale Weathers)

For a franchise that’s all about following horror movie rules, they break a pretty big one by allowing two final girls who not only survive just the first film, but all four films together. Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers is more of a final woman, though, as Cox brings her own full bodied strength of will to the character. The actress is another member of the original cast that will be reprising their roles in the upcoming 5th installment of the Scream franchise.

Filming Scream isn’t the only iconic reunion Courteney Cox has had recently, though, because she just appeared in and executive produced HBO Max’s Friends: The Reunion with the rest of her Friends co-stars a few months ago. Cox will be acting as both producer and star for the Netflix sports docuseries Last Chance U and will appear in the TV movie Shining Vale.

David Arquette (Dewey)

Despite being attacked in all 4 released Scream films, David Arquette’s Dewey Riley is yet another character who has survived the many versions of Ghostface. In addition to being another OG cast member returning to the Scream 5 cast, Arquette is actually pretty busy these days with a lot of projects on his plate. He has taken a pretty heavy list of titles in the role of producer, and has acted in a number of those projects. Interestingly enough, it seems as though the star gravitates toward producing documentaries.

In fact, David Arquette recently both starred in and produced a documentary about himself and his return to professional wrestling called You Cannot Kill David Arquette. The Next Step is another recent documentary with Arquette as executive producer. The star also has both an acting role and production credit for the upcoming Ghosts of the Ozarks and according to Deadline, has snagged a recurring role in the Amazon series Hot Pink.

Skeet Ulrich (Billy)

Ah, the horror movie heartthrob! Skeet Ulrich made a bit of a name for himself in the ‘90s as a high school hunk turned villain for his roles in Scream and The Craft (both of which he played alongside star Neve Campbell), and honestly these days he’s just as hunky. He currently appears in Riverdale as JP Jones, Jughead’s biker gang leader father. He also has a smaller part in the series Bronzeville and a number of films coming up.

Skeet Ulrich will appear alongside Tom Hanks in the post-apocalyptic world of Finch later this year. He also will play opposite Michelle Monaghan in Blood and has big parts in both upcoming films The Mystery of Casa Matusita and Supercell.

Matthew Lillard (Stu)

Matthew Lillard plays the second killer in Scream (“Surprise, Sidney!”), setting up the semi-tradition of having multiple killers behind the mask of Ghostface. It’d be pretty hard for him to return for Scream 5, even though he’d love to, but he does have quite a few ongoing projects keeping him busy. The live action Scooby Doo star has taken over the voice acting role of Shaggy since 2010 (minus the recent Scoob!) and is the second most common actor to take on the position, beaten only by the OG voice of Shaggy, Casey Kasem.

In addition to voicing Shaggy in the many versions of Scooby Doo, Matthew Lillard has a recurring role in the series Good Girls and a leading part in the announced film One Heart. Lillard also appears in the trailer for He’s All That, a reboot of the classic ‘90s film She’s All That, in which Lillard also appears.

Jamie Kennedy (Randy)

The horror movie expert and death predicting Randy Meeks was played by Jamie Kennedy in the OG Scream and returned in the 2nd, when his character was killed (or was he?). Being as knowledgeable about serial killers as he was, Randy made a video before his death that was played in the 3rd Scream, making Kennedy a major part of the first three Scream films. These days, though, Kennedy usually appears as himself in projects, mainly doing stand-up comedy and appearing on podcasts, although he does still act and appear in films.

He is combining his acting and comedy skills in a new film Don’t Suck where he plays a veteran comedian on the road with another, younger comic. He also had a major role in the film Roe Vs Wade, which released earlier this year.

Drew Barrymore (Casey)

Drew Barrymore created one of the most iconic opening horror movie scenes when she chatted on the phone with her killer about popcorn and scary movies in Scream. Although she died immediately and was only in the film for a few minutes, she broke the horror movie mold and will forever go down as one of the most recognizable and influential scream queens.

The popular actress isn’t acting so much anymore, however she is very much still in the limelight. Drew Barrymore has traded film sets for a talk show one, as she is the host of her own The Drew Barrymore Show, which is about to bring in a live audience for Season 2.

Rose McGowan (Tatum)

Rose McGowan appeared in Scream as Stu’s new girlfriend Tatum, who surprisingly held her own pretty well against Ghostface but eventually caught her demise thanks to a too-small doggy door. McGowan was a pretty iconic actress in the ‘90s and 2000’s, with roles in Jawbreaker, Planet Terror, and the series Charmed. She was also known off screen for her eccentric style, alongside her then-partner Marilyn Manson.

The actress has been the center of some controversy the last few years as she has spoken out about Hollywood injustices, namely Harvey Weinstein and later director Alexander Payne. Currently Rose McGowan is acting as star, producer, and director for two future films: Pomerania and Sleepwalk.

Liev Schreiber (Cotton Weary)

Playing the complicated and misunderstood character of Cotton Weary, Liev Schreiber did a great job in misleading viewers as to whether he was the killer or not in both Scream 2 and Scream 3 (until he was killed, of course) even though he was proven to be innocent of murder in the first film. Other than his role in The Omen, the Scream franchise was pretty much all of Schreiber’s horror stint and he went on to act in different genres.

These days Liev Schreiber is the titular character in the upcoming film Ray Donovan, which comes after his Showtime series of the same name that ran for seven seasons was cancelled in 2020. He is also in the upcoming Wes Anderson film The French Dispatch and is set to star in Across the River and Into the Trees.

Henry Winkler (Principal Arthur Himbry)

One big name you may have forgotten was in the original Scream was The Fonz himself, Henry Winkler. He played the principal of Woodsboro High and met his untimely death at the hands of Ghostface after-hours in the school. He may have gone uncredited, but he was definitely a noticeable character throughout the film.

Henry Winkler is still pretty active in Hollywood, doing both live action and voice acting. He has a few smaller parts in animated children’s shows but has a pretty big voice acting role in the upcoming Disney+ series Monsters At Work as Fritz. He also joins his Scream costar Liev Schreiber in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch this year.

If that cast list was not already epic enough, horror icons Linda Blair (who played Regan in the classic The Exorcist) and director Wes Craven also appeared briefly in the film. Blair’s cameo was so small you probably missed it - she played an annoying reporter that David Arquette’s Dewey quickly shoos away. Wes Craven, who famously cameoed in all his films, shows up as a janitor dressed as one of his other horror icons, Freddy Krueger.

Although we can only expect to see a few of these faces back in the rapidly approaching Scream 5, the cast of Scream 5 is looking pretty tight as well.

Fans of the Scream franchise are training their attention towards Scream 5’s eventual 2022 release, and who can blame them? By time the fourth sequel to Wes Craven’s legendary original horror film makes its meta way to theaters, it will have been a little more than a decade since the series last entertained us with 2011’s Scream 4. Ahead of the motors starting up on the latest installment of the series, a pretty sweet reunion is on its way, with members of the original Scream cast getting together for a good cause.

This Saturday, streaming platform Looped Live will see Scream stars Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Matthew Lillard, Skeet Ulrich, Rose McGowan and Jamie Kennedy getting together for a moderated Q&A. What’s more, original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson will also be on hand to help make the proceedings all the more interesting. The occasion for this gathering is to not only take fan questions pertaining to this classic slasher series, but to also act as a fundraiser for organizations such as National Breast Cancer Coalition, “I Have a Dream” Foundation – Los Angeles, and the East Los Angeles Women’s Center.

Sadly, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of room for Scream 5 questions in this particular forum, as Neve Campbell and David Arquette are the only confirmed participants in that bunch that are on board for Ready or Not directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s big series revival. However, that probably won’t stop people from trying to get Jamie Kennedy to try and build some more buzz around that fan theory that Randy Meeks might not be as dead as we think he is. Then again, the big push for this Q&A is probably more about revealing fun secrets from the past, rather than just setting up the future.

Whatever’s revealed, having several of the key players in Scream’s auspicious beginnings gabbing about their previous exploits should be enough to get a fan of the series on board. Should you be one of those folks, be sure to get your tickets nice and early, and tune into Looped’s big Scream Q&A, which starts this Saturday at 6 pm ET/5 pm CT/3 pm PT. Scream 5 plans to slash its way into theaters on January 14, 2022, with production presumably starting up at some point in the new year.

The Oscars red carpet is often the best time before the ceremony for actors and filmmakers to express themselves – whether it be through jaw-dropping fashion or comments to the press about their opinions on the films being recognized during that year. Ahead of Sunday’s telecast, Natalie Portman showed off a magnificent gold and black Dior gown and cape that had a lot to say. Rose McGowan was not impressed with her activism.

Natalie Portman’s Oscar look included the names of female directors who were not recognized by the Academy at the award show embroidered on her cape. For the ninth year of the past decade, not a single woman was nominated in the Best Director category despite Greta Gerwig’s Little Woman being among the nominees for Best Picture and during a year where Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood and Melina Matsoukas’ Queen & Slim critically impressed. The Black Swan Oscar-winner was praised for her fashion statement on Sunday, but not by Grindhouse actress and activist Rose McGowan. She took to Facebook to talk about how she found Natalie Portman’s advocacy “deeply offensive” to those who actually “do the work.” In her words:

Natalie Portman famously called out the lack of female directors at the 2018 Golden Globes when she said “and here are all the male nominees” while presenting the award. This Oscar look continues Portman’s support of female filmmakers, but Rose McGowan thinks she is a fraud. Throughout her 25 years in the business, Portman has only worked with two female directors – one of which being herself.

The Annihilation actress also has her own production company called Handsomecharlie Films, but it has not championed any women directors, again except for Portman for herself. Rose McGowan told Natalie Portman to “stop pretending” to represent the cause and “hang up her activist cloak.”

Following Rose McGowan’s Tuesday comments, Portman has now responded with a statement to BBC News. She said:

As Natalie Portman shed light on, the problem is it’s just really difficult to have a project made with a woman at the helm. While more female directors are starting to find themselves in mainstream projects, the actress has experienced a lot of pushback in her attempts. But from the outside looking in, it looks as though Portman isn’t trying.

The exchange between Rose McGowan and Natalie Portman continues an ongoing conversation about diversity in cinema that has been a massive topic throughout awards season. The Oscars did leave things on a positive note considering Parasite won Best Picture, becoming the first foreign-language film to take home the prize, among all the other winners.

Ever since news broke about Harvey Weinstein's alleged behavior last fall, Rose McGowan has been speaking out in favor of women and learning to be open about harassment and assault. This weekend, however, the actress came under fire for some comments she made that seemingly slammed the #metoo movement. However, she is now clarifying her earlier words, noting,

Rose McGowan is a woman who tweets often; therefore, following the news she had slammed #metoo, she took to social media to express what she was really saying. She says the comments that came out earlier this weekend were taken out of context and she's still on team #metoo, just less so a part of the Times Up movement in Hollywood.

The refutation comes a few day after an interview with Rose McGowan was published over at the Sunday Times, which seemed to present her as slamming #metoo.

At the time, she indicated her blunt comments were about Hollywood activists, but now she has indicated her comments were only about the Times Up Hollywood facet of the movement and had nothing to do with #metoo. In fact, McGowan has been outspoken about Times Up previously, calling Times Up "fake" for partnering with talent agency CAA.

Rose McGowan has been in the news quite a bit over the past several months. She was one of the women who came out and accused Harvey Weinstein of assaulting her and later blacklisting her from future projects in Hollywood. Her announcement has made her one of the most vocal voices of the #MeToo movement and speaking out against it seemed uncharacteristic for the actress.

Following Rose McGowan coming forward with her experiences, she has landed an E! docuseries called Citizen Rose. The docuseries was a four-parter that aired earlier this year on the network and highlighted Rose McGowan's stories about the assault and harassment the actress has experienced during her time working in Hollywood. McGowan is known for TV projects such as Charmed and movie projects including Grindhouse, a Quentin Tarantin and Robert Rodriguez movie produced by The Weinstein Company. Rodriguez later said the movie was "buried" in order to stymie McGowan's career.

Rose McGowan also made headlines this past year after being indicted on felony drug charges after getting caught with cocaine in an airport. McGowan has also claimed those charges came after she was framed by someone who knows or works for Harvey Weinstein. It's been an eventful year, to say the least. Rose McGowan's legal troubles continue this week. In November, the actress/activist was charged with felony drug possession in Virginia. McGowan was fighting the charges and professing her innocence every step of the way. Despite her best efforts to dismiss the charges labeled against her, Rose McGowan found herself indicted on Monday by the Grand Jury for possession of a controlled substance. Here's what we know about Rose McGowan's situation.

The legal information was obtained by online legal reports from Loudoun County, Virginia, as reported by Yahoo! News. It follows an incident on November 14th when authorities confiscated cocaine located inside Rose McGowan's wallet. It was previously reported that the former Charmed actress was heading to Washington D.C. to attend the Women's March when her wallet was lost in the Dulles International Airport on a United airplane. It was eventually found by a cleaning crew member with the drugs located inside.

Rose McGowan was hoping to dismiss the case due to a "lack of jurisdiction." McGowan believes she was framed by an associate of Harvey Weinstein, who planted the drugs inside her wallet after she accused the disgraced film producer for sexual assault. She also believed it's possible, in the five-hour period when she was separated from her wallet, that the drugs were placed inside. McGowan was arrested and released on a bail of $5,000 at the time. The police launched an investigation on January 20th and a warrant was sent to Rose McGowan on February 1st. Despite her strong convictions, it seems the court didn't vote in Rose McGowan's favor this week.

Jose Baez, Rose McGowan's attorney, issued the following statement about his client and her legal fiasco. Here's what the attorney told People.

At the time of her arrest, Rose McGowan wasn't shy about voicing her disdain for being arrested and given felony charges. She called the whole matter "horseshit," and McGowan claimed people were potentially trying to silence her. It's currently unclear what Rose McGowan will be charged for the drug possession indictment, although there is a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for the offense.

Beyond her recent legal hassles, Rose McGowan published her first memoir, Brave, on January 30th, and the actress is also the focal point of the reality TV series, Citizen Rose. On Tuesday, November 14, Rose McGowan turned herself over for arrest by authorities at the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office in Virginia. The news comes but weeks after a spokesperson for The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department made a public statement about a warrant out for McGowan's arrest over felony drug charges. The 44-year-old actress and activist got booked and released after posting a $5,000 bail. She also got a mugshot, which you can see here:

Supposedly, an item Rose McGowan inadvertently left on a United Airlines flight to Washington D.C. in January tested positive for narcotics when officials at Washington Dulles International Airport examined it. In response, the Magistrate's Office of Loudoun County, Virginia, issued a felony warrant for McGowan's arrest on February 1.

As E! tells it, The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department allegedly tried to contact Rose McGowan several times throughout the year. Their supposed efforts proved futile, so they circulated a bench warrant for McGowan's arrest and sent out documents to a national law enforcement database.

When word of the warrant finally made its way to the former Charmed actress, she took to Twitter to blast the officials behind the situation. McGowan called the matter "horseshit" and directly questioned if the warrant was but another attempt to silence her in the wake of her vocalizing allegations of sexual misconduct in Hollywood. However, when McGowan tweeted about her awareness of the bench warrant, the officials working on the case decided to make their public statement.

Apparently, paranoia was at the crux of Rose McGowan's hesitation to turn herself in for the arrest, but she decided to face the problem head-on when the officials made the issue public. Now, according to Entertainment Weekly, McGowan's lawyer claims there was plenty of time for someone else to intercept the wallet while it was out of McGowan's possession. In fact, McGowan herself said,

Rose McGowan also denied she uses cocaine. McGowan said she was in Washington D.C. to attend the Women's March on Washington, and she would never have wanted a drug like cocaine in her system for such an event.

Since Rose McGowan's arrest and release this week, the Grindhouse actress has spoken out about her perspective of what went down at the airport and why she plans to plead not guilty. McGowan told The New Yorker the entire ordeal was over a wallet of hers that went missing. McGowan said she left it on her seat when she went to the bathroom on the plane, but it wasn't until after she exited the plane that she realized she had forgotten it.

Later, Rose McGowan reporetedly reached out to United Airlines for help. However, it was an investigator rather than a United Airlines employee who ended up calling her. McGowan first thought it was someone with ties to a nefarious plot to scare her into silence, after she tweeted about getting raped by a movie executive, whom she later indicated was Harvey Weinstein. Thus the cycle of paranoia began and kept McGowan from submitting to authorities until this week.

It sounds like this issue will be a big, ongoing facet of the big, ongoing stories about Rose McGowan this year. We'll have to stay tuned to see what happens.

Rose McGowan is one of the most outspoken figures in Hollywood. While she's not doing a ton of acting lately, the last few years have seen her public image transform into a fierce advocate for women's rights- which is also one of the reasons why she's been disinterested in taking high profile acting gigs. And as the scandal around Harvey Weinstein's allegations of sexual misconduct continue to make headlines, more information about past movies have come to light. It turns out that McGowan got her lead role in Robert Rodriguez' Grindhouse film Planet Terror as a way to flip the bird to Weinstein, who had reportedly blacklisted the actress following his alleged assault.

Robert Rodriguez recently shared this information himself, in an interview with Variety. After Rose McGowan told Rodriguez he couldn't audition for projects involving Harvey Weinstein, including Sin City, the director made it a point to give McGowan a lead role in his film.

And just like that, Rose McGowan was given an assault rifle as a leg, and we got the awesome cult favorite that is Grindhouse. The 2007 film was one of McGowan's most recent high profile gigs, and she was also given a role in Quentin Tarantino's accompanying film Death Proof. The two films were presented as a retro double feature, with McGowan serving as the common thread between the projects.

Robert Rodriguez's comments seem to point out a message that has been clear since the Harvey Weinstein allegations first surfaced just weeks ago. Namely, that there were quite a few major figures in Hollywood that were aware of previous allegations, and apparently did not speak out against the producer. But it does appear that news indeed spread, and smart minded folks like Rodriguez attempted to work their way around a broken system.

Allegations about Harvey Weinstein's apparent behavior toward women in the entertainment industry surfaced through detailed reports by both the NY Times and The New Yorker. Since then, a plethora of high profile actresses have spoken up against Weinstein and other powerful men's alleged behavior throughout the years. Weinstein has since been removed from both Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the company which bares his name.

Rose McGowan is pointing her finger at someone else for causing her alleged beef with Shannen Doherty: Hollywood. In a lengthy Instagram post, McGowan wrote that she blames the entertainment industry for pitting her against Doherty.

Shannen Doherty has a storied history in Hollywood as being difficult to work with. Rumors of her costar feuds and on-set antics began back when she starred on Beverly Hills, 90210, which she then left after four seasons. She went on to star as Prue Halliwell in the WB's hit supernatural drama Charmed, but was allegedly booted due to a feud with her costar Alyssa Milano. After Doherty left the show, Rose McGowan was brought on to take her place as Prue's half sister Paige. This replacement created rumors that McGowan and Doherty disliked one another.

In her post, Rose McGowan admits that she didn't address the alleged feud for fear of being labelled "difficult," as Doherty so famously was.

Alongside her note, Rose McGowan shared an image of two cartoon women smiling next to one another. One woman is bald to represent McGowan's shaved head, and the other is wearing a head wrap, as Shannen Doherty has begun doing after revealing she's been diagnosed with breast cancer.

In August of 2015, Shannen Doherty revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer several months earlier. This year, Doherty opened up about having a mastectomy over the summer, and that she was planning to begin radiotherapy. The actress has been very open about her battle with cancer, sharing various updates on her health via her Instagram account.

X-Men: Apocalypse wasn’t exactly the blockbuster hit fans of the series were expecting it to be. Though the movie continued the rebooted universe set in play by X-Men: Days of Future Past, the latest chapter in the franchise opened on a coveted Memorial Day weekend but put up weaker numbers ($65 million) than Days ($90.8M) or the juggernaut that was Deadpool ($132.4 million) earlier this year. But the quality of the film isn’t what has actress Rose McGowan up in arms. It’s the marketing.

Rose McGowan has done her fair share of genre work, having appeared for years on Charmed, in the original Scream and in the Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse experiments. But when it came to a recent ad for X-Men: Apocalypse -- the one that showed Oscar Isaac’s titular villain choking Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique (shown above) – McGowan, via THR, has called foul. She says:

What is the context of the scene? This comes from the culminating battle, when Apocalypse and his Four Horsemen appear to have the upper hand on Mystique and her X-Men in training. The villain grab Mystique by the throat. It’s a move that has been used in countless films, from superhero thrillers to standard dramas. Heck, Ghostbusters has a similar gag, where a possessed Melissa McCarthy grabs Kate McKinnon and dangles her out a window.

But it’s not the focal point of an advertising campaign. Does that make it any better? Any worse?

Rose McGowan is not alone in feeling this ad was a poor choice. In the same THR piece, they quote writer and editor Jay Edidin, an X-Men fan and podcaster who called the ad “gratuitous” and added:

The Apocalypse/Mystique photo has been part of X-Men’s marketing campaign for some time. Now that Rose McGowan and like-minded people are voicing their concerns, what do you think of the ad? And what do you think, if anything, that the studio should do about it?      

Rose McGowan has become quite vocal of her problems with the Hollywood industry as of late, particularly when it comes to some of the sexism she’s seen and experienced. A couple months ago, the Charmed actress caused quite the storm, when she called out Adam Sandler for the wardrobe requirements for an audition in his movie. It ended up losing McGowan the job, and subsequently her agent, but that has only ignited a flame for the actress, making her even more vocal of her issues with the acting industry. Now, McGowan is going one step further and ridiculing some of the directors she has previously worked with.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McGowan opened up about this current turning point in her career, new music direction, and advocacy for women’s rights. In the conversation, the actress and director discussed some of her previous experiences as an actress, particularly with directors. In a nutshell the actress sounds disgusted, calling the industry sexist and completely lacking of creating thinking. In her own words:

McGowan clearly has no filter in her experience. She didn’t not name any names, because it seems that despite her annoyance with the industry, she doesn't want to come off as petty, but she certainly is not holding back in calling these directors lazy and uncreative. And the actress is experienced, to say the least. She has been on screen, a lot, in both movies and TV. Ranging from her beloved role in Charmed to more action-heavy Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino Grindhouse films.

While McGowan’s blunt opinions may throw some off, she is joined by a handful of vocal female actors who are also speaking out on the issues they see within Hollywood from Helen Mirren to Kristen Stewart. And McGowan straight-up told THR that she could care less about whether or not her speaking out will affect her future opportunities. Whether or not her openness can initiate change is a matter we’ll just have to wait to see.

A few years back Rose McGowan signed on to star in a remake as Red Sonja for director Robert Rodriguez. The film made it surprisingly far into pre-production, going as far as to create two posters and even host a panel at Comic Con. The project, of course, ended up not making it into the production stage, but that didn’t stop McGowan from being part of the Robert E. Howard universe – this Friday she arrives in theaters as Marique, daughter of Khalar Zym, in Conan The Barbarian

A couple weeks ago I was invited to participate in a roundtable with the actress in which she talked about her work on the Marcus Nispel film. Check out the interview below in which McGowan talks about scratching herself with her own claws, sitting in the makeup chair for hours on end, and leaving the set in Bulgaria to go visit the troops in Afghanistan.

So you had some cool outfits in the movie. Was it fun getting dressed into that character?

Absolutely. The wardrobe was actually the hardest thing. You would think it would be the prosthetics or the hair, but it was actually the wardrobe. They were feats of engineering. Even though they had all of these different cutouts, they were one piece of leather, including going into the shoes. It would take two to three people to dress me and then on set they had a little toolbox literally of pliers, screwdrivers, everything to keep me in it. It was not a normal, “Here’s your evening gown.”

How much time did you have to spend in the makeup chair?

Six hours, starting at two in the morning. Then a full day of work with everyone else, then an hour of removal. I slept a lot.

How much input did you have to this look of your character?

Well here up, none. Here down, that’s where primarily we worked together. Scott Wheeler is a genius who kind of created it. He just did a fantastic job at, a lot of times you go to see a movie and you can kind of see the wig line, this is not digital, its going directly on my face, there’s no digitization of it, and he did a flawless job. Especially now when our eyes see everything.

And you play a character named Marique, I’m not sure how it is doing that or Wolverine, but do you actually practice with your little Freddy Kruger fingers?

No. I mean, Marcus did say, “What kind of movements are you doing to do?” and I said, “Well, I used to be a ballet dancer, I’ll just do my hand movements that I did there.” And it worked perfectly.

Do you ever accidentally...

Oh yeah. I hit myself, not anybody else. I hit my eye, got stuck, hit my hair, get stuck in my hair. They’re very heavy. They’re not like plastic or anything like that. They are really heavy, heavy, engraved metal with serious spikes. I drew blood more than once of my neck. You forget and you just go, oh.

Rachel was talking about how fun it was to work in Bulgaria, what was your experience?

Well what was great about Bulgaria, besides being an hour and a half away from Rome on a plane, is that you’re in another strange world. A lot of movies now take place entirely on green screen. There was definitely some digitalized aspects to the film, but these are sets that looked as crazy as they do in the movie, they were there. And Bulgaria really liked that. It’s kind of a bizarre place so it’s not like you’re going home and having dinner with your friends after they say wrap, you’re still in this weird alternate reality of Conan the Barbarian. Which, for three and a half months is pretty fantastic place to be.

Did you guys hang out a lot, the cast members?

Well I was getting sleep, so no. I was working.

Can you talk about the playful side to your character, how quickly did you find that?

I kind of love her, I kind of feel sorry for her. I think she’s a bit heartbreaking, really. She obviously has a bit of an Electra complex with her father. Which I was happy to add a twist to a summer movie, my own kind of twist. You have to add a little pathos to the situation. I do think she was funny, I would actually laugh when they would say cut, I would start laughing, because she made me laugh. It was so over the top evil, like “HA HA HA,” because when do you get to do that? You don’t really. Unless you’re playing, let’s say you’re playing evil and you still kind of look like you, it’s all verbal this and that, this is everything, I mean I looked bananas. I think she’s kind of majestic and amazing looking, but Bulgarians actually thought I looked like that because before I’d get in wardrobe, after the prosthetics and the hair, I would go get coffee in the morning, walking across the sets, and I’m just wearing sweatpants and sweatshirts. They must have thought, “Oh my God, this poor girl, what is her issue?” They had never seen anything like that. I never explained it, I thought it was funny. I thought it was hilarious. So if anybody says, “Hey Bulgaria, what do you think of Rose McGowan?” “She has a very high forehead.”

So does she actually lust after her father, or does she lust after power and pursue her father as a means of getting that?

No, I think she’s incredibly jealous and has been her whole life. I think she’s sick of hearing about her dead mother who he’s desperately in love with. I think she would like to just take the place of her. I think it’s not a power thing. One of the things I really liked about the film is that Khalar Zym, Steven Lang’s character needs Conan and this other stuff so he can resurrect his dead wife. Usually when it’s a movie where it’s like good versus evil, the bad guy wants all the power just because he wants all of the power, there are no real particulars. He just wants all the power. I liked the added level of strangeness to it, that it’s not just about that, he’s got this obsession. Whereas Marique is just, “Enough already, really?”

Can you talk about building the dynamic with Steven Lang?

It was great fun. Acting with him, okay, if I knew how to play tennis, what I imagine it would be like to play tennis, just hitting a great volley, about having a great volley. Steven and I just, we didn’t really have to talk much about it, we just kind of clicked, we both just kind of got it. He would make me laugh, and I would make him laugh, in character, not on screen. We would cut and we’d both start laughing, it was pretty funny. It was great times, I’m really sad he’s not here today.

We hear Marcus is a little eccentric and would yell out these crazy directions.

He left me alone.

He left you alone?

Not in a bad, not like, “I don’t know you,” “I do not know you, you do not exist,” no, it was more, I think he would kind of do crazy direction, well, it was funny every time he had to say something with a “W” because I was like “V? No.” He’s like, if he was going to say Wolverine, it would be like, “Volverine,” something like that, his Ws for Vs. I adored him. Pretty much we talked about the character and then he would seem to really like what I was doing so he largely just let me do whatever the hell I wanted, which is always fun.

You always hear actors say that it’s always more fun to play the villain, would you agree?

Yes. I mean, I was a good witch, and that was fun. Because I got to do, in the movies you have to do about three different movies if you want to do comedy, action, and drama. There’s usually about three different movies to achieve that. This TV show, I would do all of those things in one episode. I don’t think I’ve ever played a character where I was so unrestrained, or unconstrained I should say. Definitely restrained, I couldn’t move. No, where you’re allowed to just paint some crazy landscape and be over the top, normally you have to really pull it back. Hence the, when they would say cut, Steven and I would start laughing at our utter ridiculousness. But I think we had a lot of fun with it.

I know of course you don’t have any scenes together, but did you get to interact with the younger you?

I never met her. I did meet the little girl, I don’t know if she’s ultimately in the movie, she might be at some point in a cut of it, she was about four, and she really looked like me. It was kind of freakish, like, a little dimple that looked so much like me when I was little. Big brown eyes, little nose, dimple in the chin. The other girl, she was a really good actress, she had a really great intensity about her. So no, actually during that period, I attended, I didn’t tell the producers, they thought I went home to LA, but I went to Afghanistan, because they wouldn’t have let me.

Was that when you met with troops?

Mmhmm. But it was funny because I had to, Bulgaria is six hours away from Afghanistan, but I had to fly to DC to turn about to fly the nineteen hours to Afghanistan, which was funny. But hey, I don’t care. I’m going to go back at the end of September, I loved it.

How did the crew react when you got back?

One of them was like, “What!” His fact kind of turned, I’ve never really seen somebody turn white, like how they say, “His face turned white!” His face turned white, he had cold sweat on his forehead. He’s like, “What, what, you weren’t even in the green zone!” I have, I got really scared, I got to do things there that weren’t normal USO things. Some heavily armed people that would let me go around and do other things besides the approved.

What besides the typical Bob Hope show did you...

I was not doing the Bob Hope show. I was out shooting things, not people. Next time I go I’m going to get them to take me to Helmand Province, goddamnit!

You said that your outfits were really tight, so what was it like when you were doing the action sequences?

That was okay. There was one, by then, when I had the big fight with Rachel, that one was more molded. I could move in it. The leather ones were really hard. Everybody had, well not her, but most people had really intense costumes. Even the horses. It took four people to get each horse dressed in the morning with their leather armor that was sculpted to their bodies. It was amazing. My brother used to collect Conan comic books growing up, I wish I could have taken him there. He would have loved it.

What was your background with the character? Do you know a lot about the universe?

I knew a bit, yeah, mostly just from my brother. I was with somebody a while ago that collected Frazetta paintings. Jason, he did a lot of renderings of Conan, Jason looks straight out of a Frazetta painting. It’s kind of shocking. I wish Frank Frazetta hadn’t died just before, if he could see Jason I think he would have liked it.

Did you have to anything physically before to prepare for the role?

You mean like, work out?

That, or just train?

Well I do, for whatever reason, because I do so many action-oriented films, I started working with stunt people doing fight training, then I found it to be just great exercise. Also I like to be fit, so I’ve continued on with fight training. Right before I got to do Conan, I was fighting off four guys. Its great fun. And strange. But a great workout. So no, this one kind of also had a very different fighting style. Which I love because there’s a lot of swordplay, amazing swordplay, and seeing it in person, seeing Stephen Lang and Jason go toe to toe, Stephen Lang is fifty-seven. You know, you see a fight sequence and it might last for fifteen minutes on film. That was like, a produced shoot. You see these guys just going at it. Jason’s thirty years younger, so it’s very impressive. But I liked that it had a completely different thing going on. So I think if one more person had a sword, “Okay, yay, another sword.” I think she has her own way of doing things.

Did you get to do much riding?

Well I did, it was funny, I had to do this long shot where, I had this amazing cape, it went over my head and then went all the way down and over the end of the horse, and all the way down almost to the ground on the sides of the horse. Marcus wanted me to do the shot where I’m riding in around the bend and at a certain point, where I can’t see the camera because I have my hood over my head, I have to pull it back. Now, I’ve got these claws, and it’s not a western-style saddle, there’s no pommels to hold onto. So I’m holding onto the reigns, blind basically, and I have to go around and figure out how to, with claws, gracefully pull it back to do a reveal. I’m like, “Really Marcus?” He’s like, “No you just, pull back, pull back.” And then half the time my claws would get stuck in the thing. So I was riding blind. But I like, I do ride anyway, but western, which is a lot easier. When you have something to hang onto.

What’s coming next for you?

I literally just finished, about four days ago, well I did a movie after this with Victor Salva, called Rosewood Lane, where I’m fighting to have my name below title because Rose McGowan and Rosewood Lane, I think sounds absurd. I think that just sounds silly. But maybe I’ll change my name for it, maybe I’ll be my sister, my sister’s name is Daisy. And then I just wrapped about three days ago, a movie with the producer Jerry Abrams, who’s J.J.Abrams’ dad. It was a television movie, but I did it because the role was so a hundred and eighty degrees from Marique, and I was so shocked and pleased that somebody thought to offer me a the church mouse. It was a true story, this woman Mary Winkler, she was a huge story in America, she was on the cover of People Magazine. She was from this tiny, tiny town in Tennessee and she was married to a Pastor. It was so so different to play somebody who’s literally, a lot of the court stuff we did was exactly from the transcripts. They talked about her being just an invisible woman, so to go from a Marique, who’s there, to someone who’s sort of scared of her own shadow and just kind of a shell of a person, was pretty awesome. That’s the fun part of what I did.

Do you love it when people offer you against type roles?

Like a lot of things, when the script came, it was written for a man. I was thrilled before I even opened it, because I knew that meant it would be a strong character. They are not going to make a man who’s kind of like, “Oh, help me, Conan!”

The producer described it as a weak man.

Yeah, I think I might have subverted that. I might have subverted their intention. Weak? No.

No matter the language, Jason Momoa looks like a complete badass in Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian reboot/prequel/3D adventure. A 37-photo gallery has been posted on the French Web site Fantasy.fr, giving us all sorts of shots of the legendary warrior on his personal vendetta through Hyboria. We’ve posted a few of our favorites below.

Couple these gritty images with the gory red-band trailer that was released a little while back, and Conan looks like it could be a gutsy guilty pleasure for sword-and-sorcery fanatics. Not that we would expect much else from Nispel, who has resuscitated two classic horror franchises in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th. I also admire his casting for Conan. Outside of the Hawaiian-born Momoa, who just played Khal Drogo on HBO’s Game of Thrones, Nispel also has cast Stephen Lang, Rachel Nichols, Rose McGowan and the great Ron Perlman as Corin, a leader of the Cimmerians who happens to be Conan's father.

If only Conan wasn’t coming out in 3D, we could be a little more excited by it. The enhanced technology hasn’t really helped any film this summer. Even Michael Bay’s third Transformers, which was supposed to have been filmed using 3D cameras to take advantage of the latest breakthroughs in the overrated technology, looked fairly pedestrian. Maybe that’s because some of the background footage was recycled from Bay’s 2005 thriller, The Island.

As for Nispel’s Conan, it will be in theaters starting on Aug. 19.

Having never really seen Jason Momoa act before, I was a little skeptical when they announced he’d be stepping into the role of the beloved Conan the Barbarian. He has the look, but there wasn’t much else to go on. But now that he’s graced the small screen as Khal Drogo in HBO’s Game of Thrones it’s pretty safe to say that Jason Momoa is one bad muther effer and that the role of Conan is safe in his hands.

Today Lionsgate has sprinkled some fresh new character posters from the film around the web to whet you appetite for slaying and graphic violence. The Conan (Momoa, MTV), Corin (Ron Perlman, Coming Soon), Tamara (Rachel Nichols, JoBlo), and Marique (Rose McGowan,

The colors and saturation combined with the imagery of dirt and blood spatter all play nicely to create controlled chaos which is exactly what we should be hoping for out of Conan when it’s released August 19th.

What better way to clarify film production misconceptions than by using 140 characters on Twitter? After San Diego Comic Con 2008, you’d think Robert Rodriguez would have Red Sonja in theaters sooner rather than later. Not only did he unveil two posters featuring a red hot Rose McGowan; he expressed a deep passion and excitement for the project.

Whether or not it had to do with a bump in the relationship road for McGowan and Rodriguez, nothing has been mentioned concerning the film’s progress in quite some time. But, in an interview with Empire in May, executive producer Joe Gatta explained Conan will be his prime focus and Red Sonja will likely wait until next year. The original arrangement was to complete Red Sonja first, but Gatta says “certain issues and the economy” forced a change of plans. Chronologically, making Conan first makes sense considering the character Red Sonja didn’t appear until issue 23 of Conan the Barbarian.

Her first Tweet regarding the film implies McGowan has pulled out of Red Sonja completely. On August 26th she said, “Just this once i'll address questions about Red Sonja&others;i was meant to do in '08. Major personal &private;reasons I pulled out.Starting 2 want to work again. Sometimes real life fucking sucks.That's all. God bless us survivors.” Her more recent Tweets from August 28th, coincide with what Gatta told Empire: "To clarify press reports: Red Sonja is delayed. I pulled out of doing it in '09. Not permanently. Hopefully will follow Conan." "I am still contracted to do it Red Sonja. Hopefully Filming in '10 not '09."

While nothing is a guarantee it seems as though McGowan and Gatta are on the same page and the project will gain some steam at some point next year.
