With every passing year, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon post about their mini-me kids, continuing to remind the public that the youngins are spot-on copies of their parents. What the A-list co-parent clan hasn't previously experienced is adding another dopplegänger into the mix as a significant other. Eldest child Ava, who is no stranger to responding to bold online comments, humorously dropped a response post to someone (pretty reasonably) aligning her boyfriend’s looks to her dad’s.

Firstly, the TikTok commenter’s opinion is based on how the Motorheads actor looked in the revealing and still iconic role in Cruel Intentions (the film starring her parents), not her present-day dad. To reply to the oddball thought, a quick video of her and boyfriend, Dakota Brubaker, who replicated Phillippe’s black turtleneck-glasses look, was posted. Their reaction while reading the comment back and responding is the best part–take a look for yourself:

It’s kind of shocking how the TikTok user isn’t entirely wrong about the idea! But she did say ‘close enough,’ and if it weren’t for the young couple leaning into it, maybe it’s a farther stretch. Regardless, this clip is hilarious, and to have overlaid Bittersweet Symphony, the movie’s closing song, is an incredible cherry on top. The comment section was going off in response to the lol-worthy content–here are just a few of the responses:

As you can see, everyone is loving this clone-like gag! The discourse attached matches the funny video perfectly and is wholly entertaining. All of it, along with the bit, makes me want to go watch the 1999 flick with an Amazon Prime subscription.

Though the matriarch and patriarch of this family aren’t the only two in the biz anymore. Ava and her brother, Deacon, both booked their first jobs and have already been featured in the 2025 TV schedule. Deacon joined their dad on the new Amazon Prime show, Motorheads, while she had a cameo spot on Doctor Odyssey (available to stream with a Hulu subscription). And like any great mom does, Witherspoon celebrated Ava's TV debut with a sweet social media post.

This beautiful, camera-ready family is sure to have this conversation continually attached to them as long as they stay in Hollywood. As for the new goofy, yet uncomfortable, addition of boyfriend Dakota resembling Ryan Phillippe, I’m glad they’re all good sports about it. Truthfully, I’m heading back to the TikTok one more time to look at the likeness, laugh at the video and skim the fun opinions.

Time sure does fly for everyone, including famous A-listers. As we all know, Ryan Phillippe met Reese Witherspoon when they were in their early twenties. They fell in love and subsequently worked on one of the best '90s teen movies, Cruel Intentions. From their time as a couple, they had two kids (Ava and Deacon) who are now in their 20s (which is hard to believe). Phillippe recently emphasized how old his kids are getting too by sharing a story about visiting his college-aged son at college that most parents can relate to.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer alum stopped by The Kelly Clarkson Show to chat about his project on the 2025 TV schedule, Motorheads. In the show, which you can stream with a Prime subscription, his 21-year-old son, Deacon, plays his brother in flashbacks. However, alongside that, he is also a student at NYU, and Phillippe shared an all too real monetary experience of visiting his kid on campus, saying:

Any parent could’ve sniffed this anecdote out from a mile away. We’ve seen it in movies and television, and as kids start hitting those more independent milestones (cellphones, cars, etc) in real life. Thankfully, I’ve still got a handful of years before any of these antics start knocking at my door.

For The Lincoln Lawyer actor and his ex, though, the times are changing, as their son continues his education and Witherspoon looks into buying a place in NYC to be closer to her NYU student.

I know that I pulled the same stunts on my parents after moving to college, even in a tiny country town. Knowing there was that extra cushion from mom and dad on almost anything was pretty great. Now, I’m shaking my head at those decisions and wonder how it’ll get spun on me. Let’s just say it’s a combo deal of an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex (students) and a mentality of "so thrilled to spend time with your student, you can’t see straight" (parental figures).

While Deacon is on set, studying, and still leveraging his parents, Ava, who’s a mini-me of her dad, Phillippe, also just made her television debut. She cameoed on Doctor Odyssey, and Witherspoon celebrated AP's first TV stint, which made a small homage to Elle Woods and Legally Blonde. Needless to say, the talent runs deep in this family, in all sorts of ways, including securing the financial perks when parents are visiting.

Let’s just hope this fun rite of passage for Deacon (and his friends) stays at college. It seems he won’t be turning to Phillippe or Witherspoon for a regular supply like Lena Dunham’s Hannah Horvath in Girls anytime soon.

Cruel Intentions is one of the best teen movies of all time, and remains iconic despite the years since its 1999 release. The steamy adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses boasted an all-star cast, including Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe. The latter had a famous nude scene, where his butt was shown to the audience (and Witherspoon's Annette). And it turns out he's heard a lot of comments about that memorable moment throughout the years.

The iconography of the 1999 classic has been apparent in the years that have followed with Sarah Michelle Gellar attempting a failed Cruel Intentions TV pilot prior to the series that was released this year for those with an Amazon Prime subscription. Phillippe was asked by Variety about his infamous butt sequence, and he responded saying:

C'mon, that's pretty funny. It sounds like Phillippe knows how significant his brief nude scene was for Cruel Intentions fans. And while years have passed, I suppose there are worse thing that people could take to him about on the street.

Cruel Intentions has a special place in the heart of millennial moviegoers, plenty of whom had crushes on Phillippe's Sebastian after watching the drama film. I can personally attest to my peers being obsessed with the brief nude scene, including LGBTQ+ moviegoers who had realizations about their own sexuality while watching the movie.

I personally think that Cruel Intentions is one of the best movies from the '90s, but I recognize that I have those nostalgic feelings from growing up watching the title. But the movie has some truly outrageous performance from its leading trio of actors, as well as supporting players like Selma Blair, Christine Baranski, Joshua Jackson, and Sean Patrick Thomas.

While Phillippe has apparently heard lots of comments about his butt over the years, that's far from the only steamy moment that happens throughout the movie's 97-minute runtime. He's got intimate scenes with both Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon, and went on to marry and have kids with the latter. But all of that pales in comparison to the iconography of Gellar and Selma Blair's Cruel Intentions kiss. Honestly, it's no wonder this title became such a cult classic for kids of the '90s.

Doing a nude scene is a very vulnerable thing for actors, especially since they live on forever in film history. Ryan Phillippe might not have anticipated talking about his Cruel Intentions butt scene decades later, but that just shows how beloved the movie continues to be.

Acting is officially a family business now for Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, after their 25-year-old daughter Ava made her debut last week on the 2025 TV schedule. Ava guest-starred on Doctor Odyssey as one of the “vixens” cruising with her girlfriends, and as The Morning Show actress posted a pic congratulating her daughter on the accomplishment, I couldn’t help but love how Ava’s character paid homage to one of Witherspoon’s most iconic roles.

Reese Witherspoon Is ‘So Proud’ Of Ava Phillippe’s Acting Debut

While many fans wanted Ava Phillippe to be cast as teenage Elle Woods in the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series Elle, it was Reese Witherspoon doppelganger Lexi Minetree who won the role in the end. Not to worry, because Phillippe got to join with fellow nepo babies Paris Jackson and Charlotte Lawrence as vixens Veronica, Vanessa and Victoria, respectively, on Doctor Odyssey’s “Spring Break.” Ava’s mom celebrated the occasion in her Instagram Stories, posting:

Ava Phillippe’s Veronica escaped unscathed from the “Spring Break” chaos, though she had a tough week, what with Vanessa’s fentanyl overdose and Victoria’s undiagnosed heart condition causing her to become paralyzed from the waist down. It seemed like a fun project to kick off a potential acting career.

She’s not the first of the Cruel Intentions stars’ children to break into the family business, though. Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s 21-year-old son Deacon made his acting debut in 2022, guest-starring in two episodes of Never Have I Ever (streaming with a Netflix subscription). He’s also set to appear in the Liam Neeson heist movie 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank, which reportedly started filming in December 2024.

Reese Witherspoon is certainly proud of her daughter for nabbing a role on ABC’s high-seas medical drama (which has not yet been renewed for a second season), but that respect goes both ways. Ava Phillippe paid homage to her mom’s Legally Blonde character, donning a pink bikini alongside her fellow vixens on Doctor Odyssey. Elle Woods famously wore a sparkling pink bikini in her Harvard admissions video in one of the best films of the 2000s:

The gold initial necklace worn by Veronica on the show also seemed to be a nod to the Tiffany heart pendant that Reese Witherspoon famously rocked in Legally Blonde.

I love that Ava Phillippe has joined her parents and brother in the acting business, and I am especially obsessed with the fact that she paid homage to her mom’s iconic career while doing it.

With Ryan Murphy being the brains of the Doctor Odyssey operation, it’s no surprise that the medical storylines are always hilariously absurd, but ABC’s rookie medical drama is also developing a reputation for having some standout guest stars. The latest episode to hit the 2025 TV schedule, “Spring Break” brought some strong nepo baby energy with Ava Phillippe, Paris Jackson and Charlotte Lawrence — as well as TikToker Noah Beck — and I am here for this campy ridiculousness.

Max Bankman Plays Doctor With Veronica, Victoria And Vanessa

Ava Phillippe, the daughter of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, made her acting debut on Doctor Odyssey as Veronica — one of three self-proclaimed “vixens” determined to have a foursome with “Dr. DILF” (aka Joshua Jackson’s Max). Veronica was joined on the cruise by Vanessa (Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris) and Victoria (Charlotte Lawrence, daughter of Christa Miller and Bill Lawrence).

The wildly tongue-in-cheek character names only scratch the surface of what “Spring Break” had in store for us. After the vixens noted that Max was jogging “commando,” they invited him to their room for the “ride of his life.” The ship’s doctor — who Joshua Jackson has admitted struggles with boundaries — turned down the offer but didn’t even try to hide the fact that he was ogling them. (“I am but flesh and blood.” Ugh.)

But because this is Doctor Odyssey, Max did not spend his week mildly resisting the vixens’ advances but rather treating (and being treated for) their various medical emergencies. Paris Jackson’s Vanessa suffered an overdose when she snorted cocaine laced with fentanyl, and Charlotte Lawrence’s Victoria was paralyzed from the waist down after drinking and diving (not a typo) with an undiagnosed heart condition. What even is this show?

TikTok Star Noah Beck Wins For Week's Wildest Malady

The most eyebrow-raising medical condition of the week, however, didn’t come from one of the vixens. That honor would go to Steve, played by Noah Beck.

After Steve’s “cruller lost its cream filling” (a metaphor brought to us by Capt. Massey that made me want to scrub my brain with the same bleach they were using on the ship’s hot tub), Max thought it best if he went and talked to the young man about his premature ejaculation.

Whyyy? I can’t imagine Steve was too enthused (ha) to be having a conversation with this really involved ship doctor about his unexpected orgasms. I guess it was a good thing he did, though, because Max was able to get him diagnosed with Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder and fix him up with some medicine that ensured it was safe for him to go back in the water. (Take that to mean whatever you want.)

If we’re going to have these ridiculous medical cases continue to pop up on The Odyssey, I love that we’re getting some fun casting decisions as well. Other notable guest stars on Doctor Odyssey’s premiere season have included Shania Twain (the second of the show’s unexpected pregnancies), John Stamos, Margaret Cho and, of course, Angela Bassett from the crossover with 9-1-1.

Soap Operas are not usually the first thing we think of when we think of “Prestige Television” but they have been popular since the dawn of TV and without them, some of our favorite stars might not have ever gotten their big break. In honor of that, we’ve compiled quite a list of famous actors who started out in soap operas. 

Brad Pitt (Another World)

There aren’t many bigger stars in the world than Brad Pitt. While he famously made his first mark in pop culture in Thelma & Louise, his first professional, credited acting role came on the soap Another World. The Ocean’s Eleven star played a character named Chris on two episodes in 1987. Little did anyone know just how famous he would soon be. 

Leonardo DiCaprio (Santa Barbara)

Pitt’s co-star in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Leonardo DiCaprio, is also one of the biggest stars in the world. Like Pitt, DiCaprio also can point to a turn on a soap opera early in his career as a launching pad. DiCaprio had a smattering of bit parts before starring in Santa Barbara, but it was five episodes on the soap that really got his career moving. 

Demi Moore (General Hospital)

In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Demi Moore was box office gold with films like St. Elmo’s Fire, A Few Good Men, and Ghost. Moore earned a then-unprecedented $12.5 million with her role in Striptease, but she got her start much more modestly as reporter Jackie Templeton in 85 episodes of General Hospital from 1982 until 1984. 

Marisa Tomei (As The World Turns)

Marisa Tomei’s career went into the stratosphere with her Academy Award-winning turn in My Cousin Vinny in 1992. She’s since been nominated for two more Oscars in her lauded career that all started with the role of Marcy Thompson, as a series regular on As The World Turns for three seasons. 

Alec Baldwin (The Doctors)

The Doctors debuted on NBC in April of 1963, on the very same day as General Hospital premiered on ABC. Unlike GH, which is still on the air, The Doctors lasted only a mere 20 years, but like GH, it helped launch a lot of careers. Alec Baldwin was one of those actors who appeared on the soap, as the character Billy Aldrich for a few years in the early 1980s, years before his big breaks would come in Beetlejuice and The Hunt For Red October. 

Kathy Bates (The Doctors)

Another actor who got her start on the oft-forgotten The Doctors is the great Kathy Bates. Bates worked hard while scratching out a living as an actor in New York City. After scoring just one bit part in the movie Taking Off in 1971, it was another 6 years before she would land a big role, this time on The Doctors.

Laurence Fishburne (One Life To Live)

Laurence Fishburne famously made waves as a teenager starring (as Larry Fishburne) in Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece Apocalypse Now. While the role made him famous, his career started years earlier as Josh Hall in One Life To Live. Fishburne was only 11 years old when he debuted on the show.

Jordana Brewster (As The World Turns)

Jordana Brewster is a star in one of the biggest film franchises in history as Mia Toretto in the Fast & Furious movies. She got her start in one of the biggest soap operas in history as well. After a quick one-off on All My Children in 1995, Brewster landed a regular role on As The World Turns later that same year. She remained on the show for 118 episodes over the next six years. 

Shemar Moore (The Young and the Restless)

For over a decade, Shemar Moore starred as Derek Morgan on the beloved Criminal Minds and then on S.W.A.T for six years. Neither was his first long-time role on television, however, as Moore got his start on eight seasons of The Young and the Restless as Malcolm Winters, a role he’s returned to a number of times, most recently in 2023. 

Tom Selleck (The Young And The Restless)

Another actor who got his start on The Young and the Restless is the legendary TV star Tom Selleck. After bouncing around in bit parts for most of the ‘70s. The Blue Bloods star found a semi-regular role on the soap in 1974. He would later own TV in the ‘80s as Thomas Magnum on one of the greatest TV shows of all time, Magnum PI.

Meg Ryan (As The World Turns)

Meg Ryan was America’s sweetheart in the 1980s and '90s. Before she starred in numerous rom-coms, from When Harry Met Sally To You’ve Got Mail, she was Steve Andropoulos’ sweetheart Betsy on As The World Turns. She would play the role for three years, before snagging a role in a little movie called Top Gun, and off she went to stardom. 

Lauryn Hill (As The World Turns)

It’s not just actors who got their start on soap operas. Singer and rapper Ms. Lauryn Hill is famous for her amazing neo-soul album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998, but seven years before that, and before The Fugees, she starred as Kira Johnson on As The World Turns.

Taye Diggs (Guiding Light)

This one is a bit of a stretch because Taye Diggs had already put together a great career on Broadway, starring in the original cast of Rent and other shows. He did, however, get his regular screen time on Guiding Light in 1997, after a couple of smaller parts on TV. 

Julianne Moore (As The World Turns)

Julianne Moore has won a slew of awards in her career. The Boogie Nights star can boast five Oscar nominations and one win, she has an Emmy, multiple Golden Globe and SAG awards, and even one Daytime Emmy, which she won for Best Actress on the soap As The World Turns in 1988.

David Hasselhoff (The Young And The Restless)

Baywatch might have been a soap opera on the beach, but it wasn’t the first time David Hasselhoff starred in one. The Hoff played Snapper Foster (yes, that’s the name of the character) for seven years in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s on The Young and the Restless, before scoring his gig on Knight Rider. While starring on Knight Rider, The Hoff also appeared on one episode of Santa Barbara.

Mark Hamill (General Hospital)

Stars Wars has often been described as a “space opera” so it only makes sense that Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, got his start on a soap opera. The future superstar started smaller, with a role as Kent Murray on General Hospital for a couple of years right before Star Wars became the biggest thing, well, ever. 

Josh Duhamel (All My Children)

Transformers star Josh Duhamel has starred in 39 movies and had roles on 18 TV shows, including Las Vegas and Jupiter Rising, and it all started with a breakout role on ABC’s All My Children in 1999. He starred on the soap opera for a few years, before moving on, but did return briefly in 2011 to reprise his role as Leo du Pres. He even won a Daytime Emmy in 2002 for his performance. 

Kelly Ripa (All My Children)

Kelly Ripa has been everyone’s favorite morning talk show host for years now and over 30 years ago, she was a dancer on Dance Party USA. Her first serious acting gig came in 1990 as Hayley Vaughan on All My Children, a role she would play for more than a decade. Not only did it jumpstart her career, but the soap played an even more important role in her life, as that’s how she met her husband, Mark Consuelos.

Mark Consuelos (All My Children)

That’s right, Mark Consuelos also began his career on All My Children, playing Mateo Santos on the show for six years. The Riverdale star was a huge hit on the show, and like Ripa, returned in 2010 to help celebrate the show’s 40th anniversary. Consuelos and Ripa married in 1996 while starring on the show together and now almost 30 years later are still working together as co-hosts on Live.

Ryan Phillippe (One Life To Live)

From I Know What You Last Summer to Cruel Intentions, Ryan Phillippe played some iconic parts in the 1990s. It was One Life To Live where he landed his first one, though, in 1992. In the ‘00s, he got more serious, with major roles in Gosford Park and Crash, but none of it might have happened with the soap opera casting him as a teenager. 

Amber Tamblyn (General Hospital)

Amber Tamblyn wasn’t even a teen when she landed her first on-screen role on General Hospital in 1995. The 127 Hours star played Emily Quatermaine for six seasons on the soap.

John Stamos (General Hospital)

Before playing Uncle Jesse on Full House, and before playing bongos for The Beach Boys, John Stamos was breaking hearts as Blackie Parrish on General Hospital for three seasons in the early ‘80s. Stamos even earned a nomination for a Daytime Emmy for the role in 1983.

Mario Van Peebles (One Life To Live)

Mario Van Peebles made his permanent mark on film with his direction of the 1991 classic New Jack City. The cult classic was huge at the time, and Van Peebles has been acting and directing in TV and film ever since, but his career really got going a decade prior to New Jack City when he appeared as Doc Gilmore in One Life To Live in 1982 and 1983. 

Hayden Panettiere (One Life To Live)

“Save the cheerleader, save the world” is a now-legendary catchphrase from the TV series Heroes and the cheerleader was, of course, the great Hayden Panettiere. Panettiere had already scored numerous credits before Heroes, including her first role as a five-year-old One Life To Live for 26 episodes in the mid-'90s. She followed that up as Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light for four seasons.

Justin Hartley (Passions)

Justin Harley was part of the cast that made more TV viewers cry than any other as a part of the brilliant ensemble on This Is Us. Hartley got his start probably making daytime TV fans emotional on the short-lived (by soap opera standards) Passions. After becoming a series regular on Smallville, he returned to daytime TV on The Young and the Restless before landing his award-winning gig on This Is Us. 

Robin Wright (Santa Barbara)

In 1987 Robin Wright became part of cinema history with her role as Buttercup in the much-beloved The Princess Bride. It took a few years of starring on the soap Santa Barbara before she would get that breakout role, but she’s been on top ever since, with iconic roles on the Netflix series House of Cards and in movies like Wonder Woman 1984, which is pretty fitting, as that was the year she started on Santa Barbara.

Lindsay Lohan (Guiding Light and Another World)

Lindsay Lohan’s first movie role was actually two roles in 1998’s The Parent Trap. She immediately endeared herself to audiences, and that love only grew with Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. She’s had an up-and-down career since, but like so many others, that career started as a kid on a soap. Two soaps, actually. First, a brief one-off on Guiding Light, with a reoccurring role on Another World for two seasons. 

Kevin Kline (Search For Tomorrow)

Search for Tomorrow is one of those soaps that despite running for more than 35 years, it’s completely forgotten about today. It was canceled in 1986, but it was around long enough for Kevin Kline to make his first on-screen appearance. The classically trained Kline returned to the stage after leaving the show, but in 1982 he found himself in a role in Sophie’s Choice alongside Meryl Streep, and he’s never looked back. 

Tommy Lee Jones (One Life To Live)

Harvard grad Tommy Lee Jones actually got his first role in the classic Love Story but it was a minor “blink and you’ll miss it” type of role. It was probably his 21 episodes on One Life To Live in the early 1970s that really jumpstarted his now-legendary career. 

Tom Berenger (One Life To Live)

Speaking of One Life to Live in the ‘70s, Platoon star Tom Berenger overlapped with Jones for one season on the long-running soap. Berenger played Tim Siegel for 66 episodes from 1975 until his character’s death just after getting married in the 1976 season. Classic soap opera plot!  

While budgets of soap operas might not be that of prime-time TV, there is undoubtedly plenty of talent on these shows, and has been for many years, as this amazing of list famous actors who started out in soap operas proves. 

A lot of celebrities have kids that practically look like their doppelgängers, but when it comes to the offspring of Ryan Phillippe and his ex Reese Witherspoon, there’s actually quite a lot to debate. The Internet is fond of calling out Reese and her now-adult daughter Ava for twinning, but if you were to ask the brief Big Sky star, she’s a daddy’s girl – at least when it comes to how she looks. 

I’d have to agree. 

This past week, Reese posted a photo of herself and Ava, which obviously went viral because at a quick glance the two do look awfully alike. Both have the exact same blonde tone to their hair, not to mention similar eyes and both wore semi-matching strapless dresses to a recent Oceana Sea Change event. In fact, while you might see a “father-son resemblance,”  he feels Ava in general resembles his side of the family while Deacon looks like his Mama. 

What Do Fans Of The A-Listers Think?

A lot of fans seem to agree... with both sides. On the one hand, a slew of them commented on Reese’s post to explain that while Ava, 23, is beautiful, she doesn't resemble her Mama very much.

One would think this would be enough evidence to indicate people were here for Ryan Phillippe's opinion about his kids and the parent they most look like. However, the Internet can be a fickle beast and a lot of other people feel Ava and Reese do clearly resemble one another.

So, Ryan Phillippe’s own comments certainly haven’t stopped people from thinking the mother-daughter duo resembles one another. In fact, some have even called for Ava to appear in a Legally Blonde sequel to further pay homage to her famous mother. Mindy Kaling also spoke out about her possibly joining Legally Blonde 3, noting it would need to be something Witherspoon “wanted.”

Insiders claim that the A-lister and Jim Toth split because they just “don’t really have any romantic feelings for each other anymore.” It’s also been said that the two – who share son Tennessee – aren’t “blaming” each other for the way things panned out, and they’re purportedly “parting as friends and will continue to co-parent.”

Ahead of Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth’s wedding anniversary on Sunday, the couple announced they are getting a divorce after 12 years of marriage. The pair released a joint statement on social media that communicated their “mutual respect” for one another amidst the “difficult decision” they’ve made for their family. But, what led the couple to go their separate ways? 

According to new details from multiple “insider” sources, Witherspoon and Toth are ending their marriage due to their romance fizzling out into a platonic relationship over the years. One source said there was “zero spark and zero romance left” between them. Per Page Six’s report: 

The sources also shared that the couple has yet to file for divorce, but very much intend to work together as co-parents to their 10-year-old son Tennessee James Toth and in a business capacity. Back in 2021, Witherspoon sold Hello Sunshine for $900 million to another media company in an effort to expand, and Toth, who is a talent agent, is apparently a “big part” of Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine. 

The sources claimed that Witherspoon’s “more powerful” status since their marriage and expanded areas of interest could have contributed to them growing apart over the years. Though, it was Toth who apparently inspired her to get into producing, per a 2016 Harper’s Bazaar interview with the Legally Blonde star.  

Reese Witherspoon has found major success as a producer, especially by spearheading book-to-screen adaptations, recently including Daisy Jones & The Six and last year’s Where The Crawdads Sing, where she also increased female inclusion behind the scenes. Witherspoon also recently produced and starred in Your Place Or Mine, her first romantic comedy in years, alongside Ashton Kutcher. 

Additionally, the report alleges that Witherspoon was initially attracted to Jim Toth because he was “a solid, dependable and stable guy” following “years of shit” between her first ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, whom she started a family with and married at the age of 23, back in 1999, before she filed for divorce in 2006. The Cruel Intentions stars settled their divorce in 2008, with a joint custody agreement following Witherspoon initially asking for sole physical custody of their two kids. 

Reese Witherspoon’s divorce looks like it could be pretty devoid of some of the drama she dealt with her first husband, but as the report shared “even in the best and friendliest of circumstances, it’s hard for any family to go through.” It should be noted that given the sources relaying these new details about Witherspoon and Toth’s split are not straight from the couple. 

As they went public with the news, they have asked for “respect” and “privacy” as they deal with this transition, so we imagine they’ll continue to keep specifics to themselves as much as they can going forward.

Deacon Phillippe will join the cast of Never Have I Ever in a guest starring role as Parker, a newcomer in the orbit of Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), Netflix announced (via People). Parker is reportedly a member of a rival debate team from a rich private school. His lifestyle offers him certain advantages that allow him to coast as a student, so he's always ready to party.

A rich private school student who’s always ready to party? Nope, not getting Cruel Intentions vibes at all from this role. Although Parker’s path will certainly be different than the one traveled by his parents in the iconic ‘90s movie, it will be exciting to see what the character adds to the already-complicated world of Devi, Paxton and the rest. 

Season 2 of the Mindy Kaling creation finally wrapped up — for now, at least — the debate between Team Ben (Jaren Lewison) vs. Team Paxton (Darren Barnet), as Devi became Paxton’s girlfriend. However, there’s definitely more to come with that love triangle in Season 3, Kaling confirmed, after Eleanor (Ramona Young) told Ben that Devi originally wanted to pick him. Lawson himself has said that Ben will have an “inner conflict” about whether to continue his relationship with Aneesa (Megan Suri) or follow his heart back to Devi.

Among other things we've learned about Never Have I Ever Season 3 is that this won’t be the end of the popular series, with Mindy Kaling announcing a “fourth and final season” has been approved to come out next year.

I always found it funny how MacGruber - a Saturday Night Live character favorite played by Will Forte - got his own theatrically released movie in 2010 and the character he parodies, MacGyver (played by Richard Dean Anderson on the original series and Lucas Till on the CBS reboot), only had a few spin-off TV specials to his name. 

Now, the bumbling special operative is also getting a TV series of his own - premiering exclusively on Peacock, on Thursday, December 16, 2021. In addition to some familiar faces, there are a surprising amount of Hollywood heavies joining the MacGruber cast, but let’s start with our returning lead.

Will Forte (MacGruber)

The character of MacGruber is the brainchild of The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone, but was brought to life on SNL by Will Forte. The comedian would leave the sketch comedy series after eight years, in 2010, and create and star on his own post-apocalyptic sitcom, The Last Man on Earth, starting in 2015. 

He has also leant his talents to movies, like the 2013 Oscar nominated drama Nebraska and the coming-of age comedy Booksmart in 2019, and leant his voice to movies like Scoob! (as Shaggy) or Netflix’s America: The Motion Picture cast as Abraham Lincoln. After the MacGruber series, Forte will share the screen with Grammy-winning rock band Foo Fighters in Studio 666 - a horror-comedy coming out February 2022.

Kristen Wiig (Vicki St. Elmo)

As MacGruber’s long-time friend and partner, Vicki St. Elmo (who also originated on SNL and was reprised in the 2010 movie), is Kristen Wiig. She would quickly evolve into one of the biggest names in comedy, especially after leading the Bridesmaids cast and writing its Oscar-nominated screenplay with her Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar co-star, Annie Mumolo. 

Of course, after making her superhero movies debut in 2020 as Cheetah - one of the main villains of Wonder Woman 1984 - I think we can safely call her one of the biggest names in any genre these days. Wiig also has done a few voice acting roles recently, (including leading Fox’s Bless the Harts cast) and starred in Netflix’s epic holiday fantasy A Boy Called Christmas in 2021.

Ryan Phillippe (Lt. Dixon Piper)

Reprising his role from the MacGruber movie as Lt. Dixon Piper is one-time SNL host Ryan Phillippe. After debuting on One Life to Live, movies like teen slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer and the teen drama, Cruel Intentions, made him a movie star in the late 1990s. 

After starring in more acclaimed hits in the 2000s, like the Best Picture Oscar winner Crash or Clint Eastwood’s Flags of Our Fathers, he would redefine himself as TV star once more by assuming Mark Wahlberg’s role in USA’s series remake of Shooter and landing a recurring role on ABC’s hit crime drama, Big Sky. However, Phillippe still appears in films, such as the 2021 military thriller, One Shot, most recently.

Billy Zane (Enos Queeth)

As MacGruber’s arch nemesis, Enos Queeth, we have Billy Zane. This actor is no stranger to villainy, with his debut role in the Back to the Future cast as one of Biff’s goons, and playing Cal Hockley in the 1998 Best Picture Oscar winner, Titanic, just to name a few.

He also has a few comic book adaptations under his belt, as the lead of the 1996 film, The Phantom, and as himself in a fun cameo with The Boys cast for Amazon Prime. He will soon share the screen with several iconic horror movie actors in the thriller, Hellblazers, and is producing a Marlon Brando biopic called Waltzing with Brando in which he will play the iconic actor.

Sam Elliott (Perry)

An old MacGruber sketch starring Richard Dean Anderson revealed that MacGyver was MacGruber’s father. However, that has apparently been retconned for the new show, with Sam Elliott as his estranged old man, Perry. 

In addition to a couple of Marvel movies (Hulk in 2003 and 2007’s Ghost Rider) the Academy Award nominee (for 2018’s A Star is Born) is known for starring in countless westerns - including 1993’s Tombstone and the FX series Justified - but, arguably, his best-known cowboy hat-clad character is The Stranger from The Big Lebowski in 1998. He recently put on another cowboy hat when joining the 1883 cast as Shea Brennan for the 19th century Yellowstone prequel.

Laurence Fishburne (General Barrett Fasoose)

Another MacGruber cast member with a powerful voice and an Oscar nomination (for What’s Love Got to Do with It) is Gen. Barrett Fasoose actor Laurence Fishburne. Like Sam Elliott, he has done his fair share of superhero movies (he played Perry White in the DCEU) and has played a cowboy (Cowboy Curtis on Pee-wee’s Playhouse) to great acclaim. 

In addition to grounded, powerful dramas like Boyz n the Hood and various TV shows (he plays Pops on Black-ish, for instance), his most notable claim to fame is playing Morpheus in the original Matrix movies. While Yahya Abdul-Mateen II took over that role for The Matrix Resurrections, Fishburne will soon reunite with Keanu Reeves when he reprises the Bowery King in John Wick: Chapter 4. 

Timothy V. Murray (Constantine Bach)

Reprising his role from the MacGruber movie as Constantine Bach is Timothy V. Murray, who typically appears in titles that the MacGruber series pokes fun at, like 24, Criminal Minds, Sons of Anarchy, or True Detective. He once played one of Ed Harris’ henchmen in 2007’s National Treasure: Book of Secrets before reuniting with the actor for the western Appaloosa in 2008, and then working with Disney again for its remake of The Lone Ranger in 2013. He, more recently, had recurring roles on the hit dramas Snowpiercer and S.W.A.T.

Joseph Lee Anderson (Major Harold Kernst)

As Major Harold Kernst, we have Joseph Lee Anderson, who is also known for a recurring role on S.W.A.T., among plenty of other crime procedurals. A good chunk of his career is historical dramas, such as American Soul (based on the life of Soul Train creator Don Cornelius), Showtime’s I’m Dying Up Here (on which he appeared as Muhammed Ali), and the Oscar nominated Harriet (in which he played Harriet Tubman’s brother, Robert Ross). However, his biggest claim to fame in the category of playing real-life people is his role as Dwayne Johnson’s father, Rocky, on the NBC series, Young Rock.

Previously, Sin City cast member and Oscar nominee Mickey Rourke was cast as Billy Zane's villainous character. As cool as it is to see the Titanic star play a bad guy again, I would have been very curious to see Rourke in such a role. We shall see how Zane and the rest of the MacGruber cast handle their characters when the series premieres on Peacock.

One iconic teen movie from that time is Cruel Intentions; which was a standout film thanks to the dark bully romance plot line. It was made even more popular due to the fact that the leads actually married in real life the same year the film came out. Now that stars Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s kids are older, Phillippe touched on whether or not he’s cool with them watching Cruel Intentions featuring the younger version of their parents.

Cruel Intentions, of course, came out before the star couple’s children were born, so they didn’t have to really worry about the film being on their kids' radars much as they were growing up. In an interview with E!, Ryan Phillippe says he didn’t want his kids watching the film when they were younger, but now that they are older (22 and 17 years old, respectively), he’s not really sure how they would feel about seeing it. If those romance fans of the ‘90s remember, there’s some pretty spicy scenes between Philliipe and Reese Witherspoon. Here is what the Big Sky actor said exactly:

I think it’s safe to say that most people wouldn’t want to watch a sex scene centered around their parents. While it’s cute that the real-life couple grew into their feelings over filming the dark romance, it’s still majorly uncomfortable. That, paired with the fact that Reese Witherspoon’s character was pretty much the brunt of a joke through most of Cruel Intentions, makes for a film I would assume her children would steer clear from.

In the same interview, Ryan Phillipe admits that it would embarrass him if he knew his kids had seen the full movie, and that he knows they have seen clips on social media before. Phillipe called the film a “heavy R”, saying:

I think if I were Ryan Phillipe or Reese Witherspoon, I’d have to have a disclaimer for my kids (even though Witherspoon helped write the film). While a lot of actors’ children have to worry about coming across a film with their parents in compromising positions, it’s relatively rare that they’d have to worry about seeing both of their parents together on screen. The ‘90s and teen horror was a trendy combo at the time, as the era welcomed fan-favorites like Scream, The Craft and obviously I Know What You Did Last Summer. Not every actor makes a movie as popular and remembered as I Know What You Did Last Summer to see the day where a whole new cast is revitalizing it, do they? Ryan Phillippe shared that he’d be into being part of the show in small ways, but is most really excited to see the Amazon show and how the story will be translated for today’s teens.

Ryan Phillippe is 47 years old and feeling a bit old knowing that one of his famous roles is now being remade, and as he shared, I Know What You Did Last Summer is not the only series that is coming out of one of his nostalgic projects. He noted that there is also a Cruel Intentions series, which would take him back to his 1999 drama that also starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, along with Selma Blair and Reese Witherspoon.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer series premieres on Amazon on October 15. The first four episodes will drop all at once, and the other four episodes will come out the subsequent Fridays. The series stars Madison Iseman, Brianne Tju, Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore, Sebastian Amoruso, Fiona Rene, Cassie Beck, Brooke Bloom, Sonya Balmores and Bill Heck.

I Know What You Did Last Summer is the kind of movie that you really needed to experience as a teenager to truly appreciate. It wasn’t smart like Scream or scary like Final Destination, but it was fun. Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and many others, most of the I Know What You Did Last Summer cast went on to do some major other projects following this popular film about four friends who are haunted by a hook-handed killer after their role in a fatal car accident.

The film was ultimately very successful and would spawn the sequels, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which brought in Brandy and Mekhi Phifer, and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, which went straight to DVD. Neither film captured the magic of the first movie, but as I said up top, I guess you just had to be there to really experience why it was so popular. So, what’s the cast of the ‘90s slasher flick doing today? Well, quite a lot, actually, and you’re about to find out.

Jennifer Love Hewitt (Julie James)

The Ghost Whisperer herself and official face of the first two movies (“What are you waiting for!?”), Jennifer Love Hewitt mostly stopped acting in films back in 2012, with her last film role being Alison Marks in the independent comedy film, Jewtopia, but she’s managed to stay relevant in the realm of television. Her first big break in the TV realm was on the hit Fox TV show Party of Five, which she starred in before and after her role in I Know What You Did Last Summer.

She would then go on to do Ghost Whisperer from 2005-2010, and a spate of other shows, with main roles on The Client List and Criminal Minds where she played the undercover agent, Kate Callahan. Her most recent role is in the Ryan Murphy procedural, 9-1-1, where she was introduced in Season 2 as 911 operator, Maddie Buckley Kendall and still has a role on the show. But that’s not all, as she also did a bit of writing since her role in the popular slasher film. Jennifer Love-Hewitt had a five issue comic book series called Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Music Box back in 2009-2010, which she helped come up with the ideas for, and she also wrote the book, The Day I Shot Cupid. Not only that, but she coined the term, “vajazzling,” which is pubic decoration with gems and stones. Movie star, TV star, author, and coiner of words. What can’t this woman do?

Sarah Michelle Gellar (Helen Shivers)

Sarah Michelle Gellar will probably always most be known for her starring role in  Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but she’s been acting since 1983 in the TV film, An Invasion of Privacy. Since then, she’s done everything from movies, TV shows, and even music videos, such as Stone Temple Pilot’s “Sour Girl”, appearing as an authentic-looking goth girl.

Film-wise, Sarah Michelle Gellar jumped from I Know What You Did Last Summer to Scream 2 (in the same year!), went on to do Cruel Intentions, Scooby-Doo 1 and 2 as Daphne, and also terrified the living daylights out of me in The Grudge 1 and 2. Her last film was 2013’s The Illusionauts. TV-wise, besides Buffy, and appearances in its spin-off, Angel, she has since had a main role on 2013’s The Crazy Ones, which co-starred Robin Williams, and has also lent her voice talents to animation, like her 5-episode run as Seventh Sister on 2015’s Star Wars Rebels. She will next be heard in the upcoming animated series, Masters of the Universe Revelation as Teela.

Ryan Phillippe (Barry Cox)

Like a lot of actors, Ryan Phillippe got his first big break on a soap opera, his being One Life to Live for a 13-episode run back in 1992-1993. He would go on to do a number of TV shows and movies (most notably, the excellent Crimson Tide) before he would land his role as Barry Cox in I Know What You Did Last Summer. Since 1997, he’s done a number of TV shows and movies. And like Sarah Michelle Gellar, he also did some music videos, most notably as a blink and you’ll miss it cameo as the TV host in Outkast’s phenomenal video, “Hey Ya!”

On television, Ryan Phillippe kept himself busy in the aughts in shows like 2015’s Secrets and Lies, 2016’s Shooter, and most recently, in 2020’s Big Sky as Cody Hoyt. Film-wise, Phillippe played roles in Gosford Park, Crash, Flags of Our Fathers, and most recently 2020’s Brothers by Blood. His next films will be the true-crime drama film, American Murderer, and the comedy, Lady of the Manor, both of which are still upcoming.

Freddie Prinze Jr. (Ray Bronson)

Freddie Prinze Jr., who married his I Know What You Did Last Summer co-star, Sarah Michelle Gellar, has kept super busy in TV and film, and even in pro-wrestling. On the film end, he was one of the only survivors who made it to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, but he was also in Wing Commander, both Scooby Doo movies, again with his wife, as Fred Jones, and most recently as a voice cameo in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as Kanan Jarrus.

On the TV end, he’s been on everything from Frasier to Friends, from Boston Legal to WWE Raw. My favorite Freddie Prinze Jr. role was as Cole Ortiz on 24 in Season 8, but he’s also had roles in Psyche, Bones, and Punky Brewster as well. Also, the force is strong with this one, since he not only had a voice cameo in the The Rise of Skywalker, but also the Star Wars shows, Rebels, and most recently, in 2021’s Star Wars: The Bad Batch as the character Caleb Dume on the episode “Aftermath”. Cool!

Bridgette Wilson (Elsa Shivers)

Yes, Bridgette Wilson played Elsa Shivers in I Know What You Did Last Summer, but to me, she will always be Sonya Blade from 1995’s Mortal Kombat. But since those two films, she did a few TV episodes, most notably on the shows Frasier, CSI: Miami, and 2008’s Carpoolers.

On the film end, she went on to have roles in Love Stinks, House on Haunted Hill, and Shopgirl. Her last film was 2008’s Phantom Punch, though she's credited for voicing the role of Sonya Blade in the video game Mortal Kombat 11.

Anne Heche (Melissa “Missy” Egan)

Anne Heche has had a long and rich career as an actor, but she’s also done some directing and even wrote the book Call Me Crazy: A Memoir, back in 2001. Like Ryan Phillippe, she got her start on a soap opera, hers being Another World. She would then go on to do several shows following her role in I Know What You Did Last Summer, such as Ally McBeal, Nip/Tuck, Hung, and Dancing With the Stars as a dancer back in Season 29. But my personal favorite role of hers is her voice acting on The Legend of Korra as Toph’s daughter, Suyin Beifong.

On the movie end, she did a number of films, like John Q, The Other Guys, and Catfight. Her most recent role in a film was 2020’s The Vanished, and her most recent in a TV show was 2021’s legal drama, All Rise. She had a two-episode run on the show. We’ll keep you posted on whatever film or TV project she does next.

Johnny Galecki (Max Neurick)

For some, Johnny Galecki will always just be Dr. Leonard Hofstadter from the immensely popular The Big Bang Theory, which will likely live on in syndication forever. But for me, he will always be Darlene’s boyfriend, David Healy, from Roseanne. Well, outside of those two shows, he’s done a number of projects in both TV and film. On the film side of things, he was in Vanilla Sky, Hancock, Rings, and 2019’s A Dog’s Journey, which was currently his last film role.

On the TV end, he was of course on The Big Bang Theory, but also My Name Is Earl, Hope & Faith, and most recently again reprising his role as David Healy on The Conners. He looks to have taken a break from acting for the time being, so we’ll have to wait and see what's ahead for the actor.

Stuart Greer (Officer)

Stuart Greer began his acting career in off-Broadway plays, but would eventually land his first film gig in I Know What You Did Last Summer. From there, some of his most notable film performances were Runaway Jury, The Mechanic, and his last film role being 2015’s American Ultra.

On the TV side, he was on the Sundance original series RETIFY, the AMC show, TURN: Washington’s Spies, and also as the character, Roman, on a couple of episodes of The Walking Dead. He had a stroke in 2016 and has retired from acting.

Muse Watson (Ben Willis/The Fisherman)

And lastly, the dude who actually knows what you did last summer, it’s Muse Watson! He played the fisherman in the movie. Muse Watson has had a prolific career in both films and television. On the TV end, he’s been in everything from JAG, to Prison Break, to The Mentalist, to even Ghost Whisperer for one episode. His most recent TV role was 2014’s Justified, and he can next be found in the TV miniseries, Diary of a Lunatic, as The Creator.

On the film side, he is also one of the few characters to return in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, but his role as The Fisherman was probably the biggest role in his filmography, as he mostly did much smaller films like American Outlaws. His most recent film was 2014’s Suburban Gothic, where he played a character named Ambrose.

So, in the end, was I Know What You Did Last Summer one of the greatest horror movies of all time? No, not really. But it didn't have to be, because as I said up top. It was fun. In the last five years, Ryan Phillippe's acting work has mostly been for the small screen. One could say his transition across mediums started in 2012 with his recurring role on FX's Damages, but since 2015 he's primarily been leading shows like Secrets And Lies, Shooter, and Big Sky. It's been a deviation from the era of his career that saw him star in films like Cruel Intentions, Gosford Park, and Igby Goes Down, but he has a pretty solid explanation for why that is: those kinds of movies aren't being made much anymore.

Currently promoting the aforementioned series Big Sky, which is currently airing its first season on ABC, Ryan Phillippe was recently interviewed by The Independent and during the conversation opened up about his current preference for television over film. Basically, the movies that he enjoys making are those that are bigger than microbudget titles and smaller than blockbusters, but the opportunities to make those kinds of projects aren't exactly plentiful. Said Phillippe,

To bolster Ryan Phillippe's point, mid-budget movies obviously do still exist to some degree, but there are far fewer of them being produced within the studio system these days compared to 25 years ago – and that means that competition for roles in those projects is fierce. Given the ways that people take in entertainment these days, the major focus is on either big blockbusters that have the potential to earn a billion dollars worldwide, or films that can be made for under $10 million and potentially become breakout hits.

Television, particularly thanks to the rise of streaming services, has become a wholly different arena. The stories that were once made as those $25-$45 million movies are now being expanded and further explored as shows. It's certainly a volatile world, as, for example, very few Netflix series make it past a few seasons, but there is an extreme hunger for content from audiences, and it creates a lot of opportunities for actors like Ryan Phillippe.

Of course, Phillippe hasn't totally disappeared from features, and he currently has two upcoming titles that have completed production. One is the fantasy comedy Lady of The Manor, directed by Christian Long and Justin Long; and the other is Matthew Gentile's thriller American Murderer, which will tell the true story of con artist Jason Derek Brown, who is presently on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List (Phillippe plays Special Agent Lance Leising). Neither movie currently has a release date, but those looking to watch the actor do his thing can catch new episodes of Big Sky on ABC.

Based on C.J. Box's 2013 novel, The Highway, ABC's Big Sky is the latest procedural drama from show creator David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal, Boston Legal). Coming off the great success of HBO's Big Little Lies, expectations were high for this new show, which stars Ryan Phillippe, Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury, Brian Geraghty, and John Carroll Lynch, and while the initial reviews weren't overwhelmingly positive, many critics were quick to praise the talented ensemble. Certainly, this is a solid line-up of established TV veterans and familiar film actors, though you might not instantly recognize some of these actors after watching the show's twist-heavy pilot.

In the role of Cody Hoyt, a troubled cop who runs a private detective agency with Cassie, Ryan Phillippe has a major part as ABC's new procedural drama series, Big Sky, gets started. Prior to his performance in this heavily-publicized new broadcast series, Phillippe was best known for I Know What You Did Last Summer, Cruel Intentions, 54, Breach, and Flag of Our Fathers. He's also known for his performance in the Best Picture-winning Crash, as well as his work in Gosford Park, Stop-Loss, MacGruber, The Lincoln Lawyer, Wish Upon, The Way of the Gun, Crimson Tide, Igby Goes Down, and The Bang Bang Club. Additionally, he wrote, produced, directed, and starred in 2014's Catch Hell.

Ryan Phillippe frontlined USA Network's Shooter, which he also produced. It ran for three seasons. Also, Phillippe starred in Secrets and Lies, and he had recurring roles in Damages and One Life to Live. Earlier this year, he appeared in an episode of NBC's Will & Grace. He also starred in The 2nd, which he also produced.

Katheryn Winnick (Jenny Hoyt)

As Jenny Hoyt, an ex-cop who still does freelance work for her ex-husband's agency, Katheryn Winnick plays a prominent role in ABC's Big Sky. The actress was previously best known for her main character in Vikings. She also had a leading part in Wu Assassins, which she also produced. Winnick also directed episodes of both of those aforementioned shows. She can also be seen in episodes of Oz, Tracker, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, CSI: Miami, Criminal Minds, Nikita, Transporter: The Series, Bones, and Person of Interest. Additionally, in film, Winnick appeared in Two Weeks Notice, 50 First Dates, Amusement, The Art of the Steal, Polar, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, Cold Souls, Killers, and Love & Other Drugs, as well as The Dark Tower, Speed Kills, and Stand Up Guys. Additionally, she played a character in Call of Duty: WWII.

Next, Katheryn Winnick will be seen in next month's Wander. She also has upcoming roles in The Marksman and Sean Penn's Flag Day, which she also co-produced.

Dedee Pfeiffer (Denise Brisbane)

In the role of Denise Brisbane, Cody's secretary, Dedee Pfeiffer returned to Hollywood after a 10-year absence for ABC's newest drama series. Most notably, Pfeiffer is known for her series regular role on For Your Love. She also had a recurring role in Cybill, for which she shared a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Her other recurring roles include The Dead Zone and Wanted, and she can be seen in episodes of CSI, CSI: NY, Burn Notice, Without a Trace, ER, Supernatural, Friends, Ellen, Wings, and Murder, She Wrote.

Additionally, Dedee Pfeiffer's notable film credits include Falling Down, Frankie and Johnny, The Allnighter, and Dangerously Close.

Kylie Bunbury (Cassie Dewell)

Playing the part of Cassie Dewell, a private detective who's one-half of the private investigation agency, Dewell & Hoyt, Kylie Bunbury is also a prominent player in ABC's Big Sky. Prior to this performance, Bunbury had main roles in Under the Dome, Pitch, and Twisted, as well as Netflix's acclaimed mini-series, When They See Us and Tut. Bunbury also played a primary role in Peacock's Brave New World, which came out earlier this year prior to its cancellation. She can also be seen in episodes of Days of Our Lives, Law & Order: SVU, and CBS All Access' Twilight Zone reboot. Additionally, she can be heard in an episode of Robot Chicken.

Outside of these television roles, Kylie Bunbury can be seen in Prom, The Sitter, and Game Night. Next, she'll be seen in Warning and Eat Wheaties!

Natalie Alyn Lind (Danielle Sullivan)

As Danielle Sullivan, the sister of Grace, Natalie Alyn Lind plays one of the main characters in Big Sky. Before she starred in this new series, Lind was best known for her starring role in Fox's The Gift. She also had recurring roles in The Goldbergs, Gotham, and Daybreak. Additionally, Lind had a main role in Tell Me A Story, which ran through this year. The actress can also be seen in episodes of Wizards of Waverly Place, Gotham, Chicago Fire, iZombie, iCarly, One Tree Hill, Army Wives, Flashpoint, and Criminal Minds. Her film credits include Kaboom, Mockingbird, and Blood Done Sign My Name.

Jesse James Keitel (Jerrie)

In the role of Jerrie, a sex worker and aspiring singer, Jesse James Keitel is one of the main cast members on ABC's Big Sky. Prior to this performance, Keitel starred in last year's short film, Miller & Son, which won the BAFTA Student Film Award. They can also be seen in films like Alex Strangelove, Fluidity, and Like Glass, as well as an episode of Younger. Next, Keitel will also star in the upcoming sci-fi series, Forever Alone.

Jade Pettyjohn (Grace Sullivan)

Playing Grace Sullivan, Danielle's sister, Jade Pettyjohn plays an intense role in ABC's newest drama series. Most notably, Pettyjohn is known for her leading role in An American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars. The former child star also gained notice for Nickelodeon's School of Rock, as well as her work in Hulu's Little Fires Everywhere mini-series earlier this year. Her other notable film credits include Destroyer, Trial by Fire, and Seberg. She also played recurring roles in The Last Ship, Revolution, Henry Danger, Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, and The Righteous Gemstones. Pettyjohn can also be seen in episodes of Grimm, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, United States of Tara, and The Mentalist. Additionally, the actress starred in HBO's Deadwood: The Movie last year.

John Carroll Lynch (Rick Legarski)

As Rick Legarski, an accomplice to Ronald and a member of the Montana highway patrol with a checkered past, John Carrol Lynch plays a shady character in Big Sky. An immensely accomplished character actor with several credits to his name, Lynch is best known for his work in Zodiac, The Invitation, The Founder, Gran Torino, The Drew Carey Show, Shutter Island, Face/Off, One Dollar, Bubble Boy, and Fargo, as well as Grumpy Old Men, Bug, Crazy, Stupid, Love, Jackie, Close to Home, K-Ville, Do No Harm, and Body of Proof. He's also well-known for his menacing roles in FX's American Horror Story, particularly his portrayal of Twisty of Clown. Additionally, Lynch directed 2017's Lucky.

Most recently, John Carroll Lynch starred in Netflix's The Trial of the Chicago 7. He also appeared in Kiss Me Before It Blows Up, which premiered in Germany in September. And Lynch appeared in NBC's Perfect Harmony.

Brian Geraghty (Ronald Pergman)

In the role of Ronald Pergman, a long-haul trucker who's involved with nefarious criminal activities, Brian Geraghty plays an antagonistic character in Big Sky. As an actor, Geraghty is best known for his regular role on Chicago P.D. and his recurring roles in Chicago Fire, Ray Donovan, and Boardwalk Empire, as well as his film performances in Jarhead, The Hurt Locker, and Flight. His other notable movie roles include The Identical, My Days of Mercy, I Know Who Killed Me, We Are Marshall, The Guardian, Bobby, and When A Stranger Calls (2006), as well as Art School Confidential, Date and Switch, The Standoff at Sparrow Creek, and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile.

Additionally, on television, Brian Geraghty appeared in episodes of True Blood, and he can be seen in The Sopranos and Law & Order: SVU. He was also in the main cast for The Alienist, as well as Briarpatch, which aired earlier this year before its cancellation.

Valerie Mahaffey (Helen Pergman)

As Helen Pergman, Ronald's mother, Valerie Mahaffey is also part of the main cast for ABC's Big Sky. An Emmy-winning actress for her performance in Northern Exposure, as well as Emmy-nominated for her work in NBC's daytime soap opera, The Doctors, Mahaffey is also known for her work in Wings, Devious Maids, Seinfeld, Cheers, Newhart, Glee, The Powers That Be, United States of Tara, The Man in the High Castle, Workaholics, and Desperate Housewives, as well as Seabiscuit, Jack and Jill, Jungle 2 Jungle, National Lampoon's Senior Trip, and Sully. She also has recurring roles in Dead to Me and Young Sheldon.

Additionally, earlier this year, Valerie Mahaffey was seen in French Exit, in what's been considered a scene-stealing and potentially Oscar-nominated performance.

Brooke Smith (Merrilee Legarski)

In the part of Merrilee Legarski, Rick's wife, Brooke Smith plays a recurring role in ABC's Big Sky. Most notably, the actress is known for playing Dr. Erica Hahn on Grey's Anatomy. She also played a prominent role in Bates Motel, and she can be seen in The Silence of the Lambs. Her other notable TV credits include Crossing Jordan, Weeds, Six Feet Under, Ray Donovan, Bosch, American Horror Story: Asylum, and The Crossing.

Additionally, on the big screen, viewers might recognize Smith for her performances in Vanya on 42nd Street, Trees Lounge, The Man Who Wasn't There, Random Hearts, Bad Company, Melinda and Melinda, and In Her Shoes, as well as The Namesake, Fair Game, Interstellar, Labor Day, To the Bone, Dude, and, most recently, last year's Bombshell. She was also recently seen in episodes of The Act, Unbelievable, and The Good Fight.

Big Sky recently premiered on ABC, sparking a conversation following a massive cliffhanger that saw one of its leading characters shot. However, the series — which hails from Big Little Lies creator David E. Kelley — is already facing backlash from Indigenous communities for failing to include Indigenous women in its narrative about murdered and missing persons cases.

Rocky Mountain Tribal Leaders Council executive director William F. Snell, Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana chairman David Sickey, and Global Indigenous Council president Tom Rodgers penned a letter to ABC execs expressing their concerns over Big Sky’s “cultural insensitivity, and at worst, appropriation.” The Indigenous leaders also included The Highway, the 2013 novel the series is based on, for also failing in its lack of representation and focus on Indigenous communities in the area where the story is set. Here’s what the Indigenous leaders wrote (via THR):

Despite some forward movement, representation on television still has a long way to go. That lack of diversity is prevalent in ABC’s Big Sky, which follows a private detective and an ex-cop as they work to find two women who have gone missing in Montana. The series’ cast is primarily white and the leaders of several Indigenous organizations have clearly taken issue with Big Sky neglecting to address the high percentage of Indigenous women who disappear and are killed every year in Montana.

The Indigenous leaders who wrote the letter are also producers on the documentary Somebody’s Daughter, which is about the amount of Indigenous and Native women who are murdered or go missing annually. The letter goes on to add how Big Sky and ABC can make amends. Here’s what it reads:

MAJOR SPOILERS for the series premiere of Big Sky are discussed below!

If you watched the series premiere of Big Sky, then you might have woken up today with your jaw still on the floor. The ABC series’ debut episode concluded with a stunningly deadly twist that saw it pull a “Game of Thrones” by killing off one of its purported core leads. Ryan Phillippe’s Cody Hoyt was shot at the end of the episode and appeared dead. Thus leaving viewers with a massive shock and wondering how Phillippe reacted to the twist ending.

Is Cody really dead on Big Sky? The cast’s comments indicate the series premiere is the end of Cody’s life in the present, with any further appearances happening in flashbacks. So, how did Phillippe feel when he read what would become of his character in the series premiere? During last week's Big Sky panel (via Deadline), he said:

The rarity of the moment led Ryan Phillippe to be enthusiastic over the deadly twist, even though it probably means his time on Big Sky will not be long-term. The show will seemingly shift its focus from the trio at the start to the new duo that now focuses on the two women in Cody’s life. This means that Kylie Bunbury’s Cassie Dewell (Cody’s new girlfriend/PI partner) and Katheryn Winnick’s Jenny Hoyt (Cody’s estranged wife) will probably be spending more time together than they thought.

Cassie and Jenny will have to join forces as they attempt to solve the string of mysterious disappearances rocking Montana. Big Sky’s big move means Ryan Phillippe will not be returning to television in a full-time capacity via the ABC crime drama. Phillippe had previously starred in USA’s adaptation of the 2007 Mark Wahlberg thriller, Shooter. It lasted for three seasons before it was cancelled in 2018. On not making it far into Big Sky’s run, Phillippe added:

There you have it. Big Sky viewers better watch out, even though I think the show will have a tough time topping the shock value of killing off Ryan Phillippe’s character. It sounds as though part of the draw for Phillippe was being a part of a series that dared to take such a significant swing. It certainly did not hurt Katheryn Winnick’s interest, although she shared that David E. Kelly was the draw for her.

Winnick is no stranger to shocking deaths rocking a television show, as she previously starred on History’s Vikings. How Jenny and Cassie deal with the fallout of Cody’s death is an answer that will be coming shortly. Big Sky will continue with another new episode next week, so fans will have to see what else David E. Kelly has up his sleeve as the show progresses.

Ellen DeGeneres has received her fair share of backlash as of late. Over the past several months, the TV personality's show became the center of controversy when former and employees made claims of a toxic workplace culture that included sexual misconduct. This led to a wave of scrutiny from commentators across Hollywood and the internet. DeGeneres has since made behind-the-scenes changes and apologized during her first show back in the studio. Now, actor Ryan Philippe is throwing a bit of shade at her.

Ryan Phillippe recently stepped out for a workout and, along the way, the 46-year-old actor passed by a poster promoting The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In his Instagram stories (via Us Weekly), he posted a picture with a short caption:

In just a few words, Phillippe definitely made his thoughts on Ellen quite clear to his social media followers. The actor actually hasn’t appeared on the talk show in some time, as his last appearance was back in 2011. However, his ex-wife, Reese Witherspoon, has appeared on the show quite frequently and appears to be good friends with DeGeneres.

Ryan Phillippe isn’t the only star to have commented in regard to the allegations that faced Ellen DeGeneres. In the midst of the controversy, actress and director Lea Thompson shared one of the initial stories about the claim and stated that it was a true. Actor Brad Garrett also attributed the claims to Ellen, saying that he knows “more than one person” who was allegedly mistreated by the host. And while he didn’t speak directly to DeGeneres’ character, former show DJ Tony Okungbowa did say that he could “feel the toxicity of the environment” while he was working on the show.

On the other side of the situation, there have been a number of celebrities who have come out in defense of DeGeneres. Kevin Hart and Sofia Vergara are among the stars who have shown support for her since the initial allegations were reported. The talk show host’s wife and brother have also spoken out on her behalf.

At one point, cancellation rumors began to circulate, while others theorized that DeGeneres would be replaced. These rumors were eventually shot down a by producer and, some time later, WarnerMedia chief Jason Kilar also stated that DeGeneres had the company’s support moving forward.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show has since returned to production, with reports indicating that the crew appeared to be pleased with how the return episode played out. Though it has been reported that the show is facing some ratings problems following the backlash. It remains to be seen if any other actors like Ryan Phillippe chime in on the matter and how ratings will hold up as the season moves forward.

These fans have come to expect hilarious moments as they watch them try to navigate the complicated criminal world of New York. Not only does Brooklyn Nine-Nine have a hilarious cast of regulars, but also many comedians have delivered an entertaining Brooklyn Nine-Nine cameo or two.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns to its new home of NBC on February 6, 2020. Before Peralta (Andy Samberg), Holt (Andre Braugher), Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz), Santiago (Melissa Fumero), Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), Scully and Hitchcock (Joel McKinnon and Dirk Blocker), and Jeffords (Terry Crews) get back to work, NBC wants to make sure that they stay around for at least one more season: NBC renewed Brooklyn Nine-Nine for season 8. This is a smart decision by NBC because of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s huge fan support and history of major guest star cameos. We can’t wait to see what the cast and crew of Brooklyn Nine-Nine plan for Season 7 and 8, and to see who plans to pop-by the 99th Precinct. As we get ready for Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7, let us look back at some of the series’ cameos that you may have forgotten.

Adam Sandler

During Season 1, Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans were excited to see Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg reunite on-screen. Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg first appeared together on-screen playing father and son in That’s My Boy. The two former Saturday Night Live alumni have also both provided their voices to the animated Hotel Transylvania series, and Samberg had a small role in Grown Ups 2. Because of their friendship, it makes perfect sense that Sandler wanted to help his buddy out by making a cameo.

During an auction scene, Adam Sandler plays himself as he heckles Jake Peralta. Though Adam Sandler actively tries to humiliate Jake, Peralta gets the best line of the scene. When Sandler mentions that he is making a movie about the Russian Revolution, Jake responds by asking who Kevin James will play?

Bill Hader

The multiple Emmy winner Bill Hader is best known for playing various characters, like Stefon, on Saturday Night Live. He’s also known for his darkly hilarious role on the HBO series Barry.

In Brooklyn 99, Bill Hader appeared in the Season 3 premiere, “New Captain,” as Captain Holt’s replacement, Seth Dozerman. Dozerman takes a much more strict approach to running the 99th precinct than Holt. Dozerman’s intensity leads to him being a very short-term captain. It’s a very different role for Hader who usually plays more laidback characters, but Hader creates an extremely amusing temporary captain.

Nick Offerman

Many Parks and Recreation fans know Nick Offerman for being the ultimate man, and an expert woodsman of things like boats and furniture. These fans also know Nick Offerman for his role as Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation. Offerman also gets paid to encourage people to make things as a co-host on the NBC reality-series Making It. He hosts alongside Amy Poehler.

Offerman appeared in Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 3 (Episode 8), “Ava.” In it, he plays Captain Holt’s ex-boyfriend Frederick. Frederick and Holt didn’t have the most amicable breakup, which leads to some very entertaining passive aggressive moments between them. Nick Offerman doesn’t stretch his acting muscles too much in this episode, because basically he plays a less intense version of Ron Swanson. By no means are we complaining, because Ron Swanson is a hilarious and memorable character.

Maya Rudolph

Andy Samberg once again reunited with a Saturday Night Live alumni when Maya Rudolph made her guest appearance on the two-part Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 4 premiere, “Coral Palms Part 1 and 2.” Besides Saturday Night Live¸ Maya Rudolph has a long list of film and television appearances, including The Good Place, Bridesmaids, Forever, Big Mouth, and Wine Country.

Maya Rudolph plays Karen Haas, a United States Marshall assigned to help Jake and Holt while they’re in the Witness Protection Program. Rudolph has a limited role in these episodes, but she definitely adds her signature Rudolph humor to her scenes.

Oscar Nunez

The Office fans best remember Oscar Nunez for his role as Oscar Martinez in the series. He has also had series regular roles on Benched, People of Earth, and Mr. Iglesias.

Oscar Nunez appeared on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 3 episode 12, “9 Days.” Nunez plays Dr. Porp, the doctor who lets Holt and Peralta know that they’ve contracted the mumps and need to quarantine themselves. His appearance is very brief, so most of the comedy comes from Peralta, Santiago, and Holt’s reaction to the news.

Zooey Deschanel

Most people recognize Zooey Deschanel for her roles on New Girl and 500 Days of Summer. Some even may remember Zooey Deschanel for her band She & Him. When New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine were both on Fox, the network decided to have a crossover event with characters from both series. Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) becomes an unwilling companion as Jake tries to catch a thief in Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 4 (Episode 4), “The Night Shift.”

The first scene with Jess involves Jake and her teaming up and arguing the whole way, until they crash. It’s an odd combination considering Jake and Jess’s very different personalities, but it was still cool to see Fox try something different by crossing over the two series. Some of the other crossover scenes have hilarious results, like the one involving Boyle, Nick (Jake Johnson), and Winston (Lamorne Morris).

Nathan Fillion

Nathan Fillion has appeared in many different television series and movies, but he’s best known for his roles in Firefly, Big Mouth, The Rookie, and Castle. Recently, he joined the cast of Suicide Squad 2.

In Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 4 (Episode 14), “Serve & Protect,” Fillion plays Mark Devereaux, an actor on Jake and Rosa’s favorite detective series. Devereaux tries to use his fake detective skills to assist them when a crime happens on set. It’s a fun episode that allows Nathan Fillion to play the-over-the-top characters that he does so well.

Ryan Phillippe

Ryan Phillippe gained most of his fame from appearing in edgy teen movies in the late 1990s, such as Cruel Intentions and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Recently, he gained more fans by appearing in Shooter from 2016 to 2018.

Phillippe appeared in Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 14 (Episode 21), “The Bank Job.” He played Milton Boyle, one of Charles’ cousins that had a secret relationship with Gina (Chelsea Peretti), which results in her pregnancy. The best thing about Ryan Phillippe’s guest appearance on Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the shocking moment when fans realize that there are hot Boyle cousins.

Sterling K. Brown

Sterling K. Brown is a double Emmy winner for his roles in The People v. O.J Simpson: American Crime Story and This is Us. He has also had starring roles in Hotel Artemis, Black Panther, Army Wives, and Frozen II.

In Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 5 (Episode 14), “The Box,” Sterling K. Brown plays a dentist turned suspected murderer Philip Davidson. Brown brings confidence and smoothness to the character that makes you wonder if Jake and Raymond will ever get a confession. Sterling K. Brown creates one of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s most memorable criminals, and he helps the series deliver one of its best episodes.

Nicole Byer

Nicole Byer first started to gain recognition by appearing on MTV’s Girl Code. MTV eventually gave her a starring role in Loosely Exactly Nicole. However, most people recognize Nicole Byer for being the infectiously bubbly host on Netflix’s Nailed It! Byer has also had guest appearances on Bob’s Burgers, The Unicorn, and The Good Place.

She plays Doug Judy (Craig Robinson)’s sister, Trudy Judy on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6 (Episode 5), “A Tale of Two Bandits.” Jake and Doug team up to prove his innocence, and to prove that he is not the Pontiac Bandit anymore. All clues lead back to Doug, but twist, it was his sister Trudy. Nicole Byer creates a hilarious new character that expands on the universe of the Judy family, as well as creating a new Pontiac Bandit who might be slyer than the original.

Mario Lopez

Mario Lopez began his acting career as A.C. Slater on Saved by the Bell. After appearing in several television shows and movies, Mario Lopez settled into hosting duties. He appeared on Extra from 2008 to 2019, and recently, Lopez joined the Access team.

In Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6 (Episode 4), “Four Movements,” Gina tries to spend time with each member of the 99th Precinct to before she leaves. She assigns Jake with planning her going away party. He wants to make it extra special by getting Mario Lopez to make a cameo. Eventually, Jake succeeds in getting Mario Lopez there, but Gina sends him away to just spend time with her actual friends. Mario Lopez has fun with the role, even quoting his Saved by the Bell character. His appearance also gives us peak Gina as she revels in sending a celebrity away from her party.

Neil deGrasse Tyson

Neil deGrasse Tyson is a leading astrophysicist who also runs the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space in New York. He has also made many television cameos, including on Family Guy, BoJack Horseman, Stargate: Atlantis, and The Big Bang Theory.

Neil deGrasse Tyson plays himself on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. In Season 3, Terry recruits him to help Gina learn astronomy for her upcoming test. Terry and deGrasse Tyson go to the same gym. The funniest moment from his short appearance is when Brooklyn Nine-Nine flashes back to Terry and Neil deGrasse Tyson in the gym. Terry is struggling, but deGrasse Tyson finds it easy because of physics.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine will continue to have memorable cameos, so make sure to catch Holt, Peralta and the rest of the crew on NBC in February. The first six seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine are also available to stream on Hulu.

USA's Shooter was a pretty solid performer over its first two seasons on the air, but it ran into some problems by the end of Season 2. Star Ryan Phillippe suffered an injury that meant the show could not complete filming the last couple of episodes. Season 2 didn't end on a terrible note, however, and plenty of fans have been wondering ever since the finale if and when news of Season 3 would break. Well, Ryan Phillippe himself posted the good news about Shooter on social media:

Ryan Phillippe shared word of the renewal on Instagram, and the caption indicates that the Shooter team is well on their way of putting together the third season. They're going to be shooting new episodes in the not-too-distant future, and Phillippe seems as enthusiastic as ever about the series. Interestingly, the renewal itself wasn't the only piece of good news for Shooter fans today.

Season 3 of Shooter will also get an increased episode order. USA has ordered a total of 13 episodes for Shooter Season 3, which is a notable bump from earlier years. Both Seasons 1 and 2 scored orders for ten episodes, although Season 2 ultimately only ran for eight due to Ryan Phillippe's leg injury. Admittedly, it was always likely that a third season would begin in a way that would finish the story that was meant to be told in the second season, but there was no guarantee that Shooter would get extra episodes in order to do it. The show could have easily scored another order for ten episodes, with two to finish the previous arc and eight for a brand new arc.

The increased episode count for Season 3 (as reported by TVLine) likely means that Shooter will finish off the Season 2 arc and set up its regular 10-episode arc. All things considered, Season 3 is shaping up to be a pretty exciting time for fans. Loosely based on the second book in the Lee Swagger series that inspired the show, Season 3 will see leading man Bob Lee learning of a conspiracy courtesy of a nemesis. The only bad news for fans is that it might be a while before we get to see any of the 13 new episodes.

Production is technically only weeks away from kicking off in January, but there's no word of when Season 3 might premiere on USA. Personally, I'd put my money on the first episode hitting the airwaves sometime in the summer. Season 2 kicked off in the middle of July, with an intended finale by the end of September. Season 3 could very well air on a similar timeline, although I wouldn't rule out a premiere a few weeks earlier due to the extra episodes. While there is the chance that USA could hold Season 3 until a late fall premiere to match the timeline of Season 1, which scored higher viewership and ratings than Season 2, that would make for a very long wait for fans.

In July, Ryan Phillippe's 21-year-old ex-girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt, claimed Phillippe went into a drunken rage and struck her, kicked her, and pushed her down a flight of stairs at his home. Hewitt reportedly filed a police report, received a temporary protective order, and seeking $1 million in damages. Now Phillippe apparently has offered an entirely different story of what happened that evening. In court documents filed in response to Hewitt's allegations, the 43-year-old Shooter actor allegedly maintains it was she, not him, who went into an alcohol-fueled frenzy. Phillippe reportedly said Hewitt broke into his home, started an argument, and manufactured a story about a physical altercation to save face, promote her career with Wilhemina Models, and extort him for an easy payday.

New court documents Ryan Phillippe or his liaison filed on November 17 apparently reveal how different Phillippe's side of the story is from Elsie Hewitt's. Phillippe supposedly painted a picture of a situation in which Hewitt arrived "extremely intoxicated" at his house and broke in "in the middle of the night without permission." Phillippe allegedly claimed the entire ordeal that occurred afterward was nothing but an "unjustified attempt to extort money."

In fact, Phillippe reportedly accused Hewitt of submitting "a false report to the police" and "wrongfully accusing [him] of injuring her." At one point, the father of three children--two with Reese Witherspoon and one with Alexis Knapp--apparently added he "was raised by women in a household where women's rights, feminism, and advocacy were very much at the forefront, and he is sickened to have been falsely accused of domestic violence."

A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson verified the existence of a police report concerning the supposed physical assault. The spokesperson also told People the report granted Elsie Hewitt an emergency protective order, which expired July 12. Other court documents allegedly revealed Hewitt's perspective of the incident. She reportedly described ignoring Ryan Phillippe at a party, which he then left in anger. Hewitt apparently went back to Phillippe's house with her friend to pack up her belongings, and then the supposed physical assault took place.

In the documents, Elsie Hewitt allegedly accused Ryan Phillippe of "repeatedly abusing a panoply of legal and illegal drugs, including without limitation: cocaine, ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms, and steroids ..." Hewitt also reportedly claimed Phillippe "increasingly combined these drugs with excessive alcohol consumption and often exhibited symptoms attendant of polydrug and alcohol abuse, including mood swings and bouts of anger." Apparently, the criminal investigation over the domestic abuse allegations came to a close in September when authorities closed the case. However, Hewitt subsequently filed a civil lawsuit.

If Elsie Hewitt did bring a friend with her to Ryan Phillippe's house back in July, there is a possibility that the person witnessed what did or did not take place that evening. This matter sounds like it will be ongoing for a while. We'll stay tuned to see how everything proceeds.

Movie sets can be unintentionally dangerous locations. A-listers like Tom Cruise get injured performing stunts on Mission: Impossible sequels. Stunt people risk their lives and, in tragic situations lose their lives because of miscalculations. And on more occasions than they probably care to admit, actors get punched in the face filming fight sequences, as when Sarah Silverman took a right-hander square in the eye from Ryan Phillippe while filming Christopher McQuarrie's directorial debut The Way of the Gun back around 1999. As Silverman now remembers it:

It sure looks like they used it. If you haven't seen Christopher McQuarrie's debut film The Way of the Gun, it's a gripping and harrowing story about two criminals (Ryan Phillippe and Benicio Del Toro) who get in way over their heads when they kidnap a woman with powerful criminal ties. The movie's best known for McQuarrie's use of sound. When you sat in a theater for The Way of the Gun, the actual sound of the guns going off in the numerous gunfights was DEAFENING. But the movie also has one of the most memorable opening scenes in modern-movie history, where Sarah Silverman berates Phillippe's character outside of a nightclub, forcing him to finally haul off and deck her.

The odd thing about The Way of the Gun is that it was poorly received, and while Christopher McQuarrie was coming off of The Usual Suspects (which he wrote, for Bryan Singer to direct), this movie stalled his directing career until he tried again with Jack Reacher in 2012. That movie was such a hit, it earned McQuarrie the directing gig on Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation and, now, Mission: Impossible 6.

Sarah Silverman and Ryan Phillippe have had varying degrees of success on the silver screen. They never really broke out. But they've never lacked for work. I wonder what Phillippe remembers about his side of this Way of the Gun title card bout? It's brutal, no matter which way you slice it, so I'm glad Silverman, who shared this anecdote with EW, now says it was worth it to land the proper take.

Ryan Phillippe brought a new kind of action to USA back in 2016 with the premiere of Shooter. The show was a consistent performer in the ratings throughout its first season, and it didn't come as a huge shocker when the show was renewed for a second season, which debuted earlier this month. Unfortunately, Phillippe suffered an injury that got in the way of filming, and we now know that fans will get fewer episodes than originally expected out of Season 2.

The news of the injury broke on July 17, when Ryan Phillippe himself shared via social media that he suffered a bad break to his leg during a family outing. The break was serious enough that surgery was required, but Phillippe was quick to assure fans that he would make a full recovery and is being taken care of quite well. Luckily for the show, the majority of Season 2 had already filmed at the time of Phillippe's injury. The season originally scored an order for ten episodes, and eight were already completed.

Although Episode 8 was not intended to function as a season finale, Deadline reports that the producers and the network believe that Season 2 will wrap up just fine with the premature finale. Production did reportedly continue on the remaining two episodes for a little bit without Phillippe, but the brass ultimately decided to only air the episodes that have already been completed.

Only two episodes of Shooter Season 2 have aired so far. The second season premiered on July 18, only one day after Ryan Phillippe announced that he'd broken his leg. The premiere suffered a drop in the key 18-49 ratings demographic from the Season 1 average, but it received a boost in viewership. The final numbers for Live+Same day premiere calculations indicate that 1.5 million people tuned in and the episode scored 0.41 rating in the 18-49. The numbers for the second episode were more disappointing, with a ratings drop to 0.32 and a viewership drop to 1.17 million.

All of this said, fans shouldn't despair. Season 1 aired from November 2016 to January 2017, which is a time when many TV networks are airing reruns rather than new programming. Shooter may have simply tapped into a larger audience with nothing else to watch during its first season. If Season 2 can achieve a ratings consistency, Shooter could certainly become an ongoing hit for USA. Given the premature end to Season 2, the odds are pretty good that we'll get an exciting cliffhanger of a finale.

Only time will tell. At this point, we simply have to hope that Ryan Phillippe recovers from his injury without any issues and gets back on his feet sooner rather than later. Ouch! Ryan Phillippe needed emergency medical attention when he broke his right leg on Sunday, July 16. After the medics bandaged up Phillippe and put on an external fixator, the 42-year-old actor took to social media to fill in his fans and followers on the news of the accident. In a picture, Phillippe gave a thumbs-up and a wink from his hospital bed, and in the caption spot, he assured everybody he would eventually be all right. He expressed thanks to everyone who messaged him with concern. Check out the picture here:

Yikes! That looks painful. Ryan Phillippe shared the image with his 352,000 followers on Instagram, and he received an abundance of sympathies from fans wishing him a speedy recovery. While some people sent kind thoughts and prayers, others encouraged Phillippe to relax and remember he is only human after all.

On social media, Ryan Phillippe also explained some of what happened to his leg. He clarified the accident did not occur while he was filming action stunts for his USA Network television show, Shooter. Instead, Phillippe said he was "the victim of a freak accident during a family outing" that transpired over the weekend.

The actor explained he broke his leg and needed medical treatment at the hospital. He indicated he would make a full recovery, and he would be back in action soon. However, for the time being, Ryan Phillippe is stuck in bed as his leg heals from whatever happened during the family outing.

Furthermore, Ryan Phillippe expressed gratitude to the paramedics and first responders, which made it sound like the accident was a pretty horrific one. The actor promised to give updates, so we have to stay tuned to see if he provides a full description of what happened when he broke his leg over the weekend.

One of Ryan Phillippe's Twitter followers noted how coincidental it was that the actor, who safely films stunts for TV, managed to break his leg during his free time. The message must have given Phillippe a chuckle because he retweeted the post.

Ryan Phillippe also indicated he is not happy to be bound to his bed, so he might host a live-tweeting session of the premiere of the new season of Shooter, which airs on Tuesday, July 18. Phillippe said that, because he is laid up, he plans to pass the time by answering questions from fans during the session. It is a good thing Ryan Phillippe has already filmed plenty of episodes of Shooter in addition to his new movie, Wish Upon, which is in theaters now. Remember how cool the 1990s were for horror? The slasher subgenre went meta with Wes Craven's Scream, and that success led to a series of relatively grounded horror films centering on groups of ill-fated youths. Among the wave of slashers that came out during the latter portion of the decade, few have become quite as iconic as the Jim Gillespie's I Know What You Did Last Summer. The 1997 film has earned its place within the horror hall of fame, but it sounds like Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar's off-screen antics on the beaches of North Carolina were also the stuff of legend. Philippe was recently promoting Wish Upon on Live with Kelly and Ryan when he said:

I dare you to read that story and ignore the irony of Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar acting recklessly with a car on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer. You cannot; it's impossible. The two actors were just kicking off huge acting careers during the production of the horror classic, and they very clearly enjoyed getting into trouble when Jim Gillespie and the producers were not looking. We're just glad that they did not kill anyone during their shenanigans. Otherwise, their victim would've returned one year later to seek revenge in the bloodiest possible way.

Looking back on Ryan Phillippe's recent Live with Kelly and Ryan story about that car incident, it's somewhat surprising to consider the fact that we haven't seen a genuine I Know What You Did Last Summer remake yet -- particularly with so many horror remakes coming out every few years. (The last sequel in the franchise, the straight-to-DVD I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, was released in 2006.) The film utilizes the fairly timeless Telltale Heart concept to inform its killer's motivations, so it would not necessarily feel like a terribly difficult sell for horror audiences. Because the genre has experienced yet another renaissance in recent years, and because the original film turns 20 this year, now seems like a perfect time to return to that well for some bloody new stories.

Of course, in the years since I Know What You Did Last Summer debuted in theaters, Ryan Phillippe hasn't slowed down within the realm of horror movies and thrillers. In fact, the 42-year-old actor is poised to return to the genre this weekend with the upcoming release of the supernatural thriller Wish Upon. It looks like a decidedly different form of horror compared to something like I Know What You Did Last Summer, but it's clear that Phillippe still knows how to work firmly within this timeless genre.

If you’re a big fan of the 2007 Mark Wahlberg sniper vehicle Shooter, we’ve got some good news for you. It looks like a series based on the movie could be coming to the USA Network, and the new pilot has even found a star: Ryan Phillippe.

USA announced a pilot pick-up for Shooter with the Stop-Loss star in the lead role, played on the big screen by Mark Wahlberg. Based on the earlier action movie, which was in turn based on Stephen Hunter’s novel Point of Impact, Shooter will be an hour-long drama, and in addition to starring, Phillippe will also serve as a producer on the project.

The action centers on Bob Lee Swagger (Phillippe), which is an awesome name for a badass fictional character. He’s a former Marine sniper now living a life off the grid who gets talked into coming back for one last job because someone is planning to kill the President of the United States. As you can probably guess, things don’t go super smooth for Mr. Swagger when he returns to his old life. When things go South, he winds up double-crossed and framed for trying to assassinate the leader of the free world, and he must use is particular brand of skills to elude those who want to kill or arrest him, and expose the conspiracy around the hit and the set up.

Admittedly, this could turn out to be a fun ride, though it does sound rather limited in scope. Then again, they’ll probably worry about that if and when Shooter gets a series order. A kind of throwback to paranoid ‘70s action flicks, the film version starred Mark Wahlberg, who will produce the pilot, as Bob Lee Swagger, as well as Danny Glover, Michael Pena, and Kate Mara, and was directed by Southpaw’s Antoine Fuqua.

Ryan Phillippe was recently seen on ABC’s crime drama Secrets and Lies, but even though it was renewed for a second season, he will not appear. Last year, the 40-year-old actor made his directorial debut with the dramatic thriller Catch Hell, which he also co-wrote and starred in, along with Tig Notaro. He’ll also get a chance to indulge his inner superhero coming up as he has been linked to the part of Danny Rand, better known as Iron Fist, in Marvel’s upcoming Iron Fist series on Netflix.

Marvel has been accumulating a lot of talent for their upcoming Netflix shows, and now a new name has been added to the ranks of people we might see in the MCU. Earlier today on The Howard Stern Show, Secrets and Lies actor Ryan Phillippe mentioned that he is meeting with Marvel to talk about one of their Netflix series. As with everything Marvel, it’s being kept secret exactly what these discussions entail, but given Phillippe’s extensive resume, it will likely involve playing a major character.

Coming up on the Netflix side of the MCU are three more shows, the Defenders miniseries and Daredevil Season 2, giving plenty of options for places Phillippe could appear. And that’s not even taking into account what the studio may be secretly planning as we speak. Taking a look at what’s coming in the future (as well as a few guesses of directions that Netflix may eventually take), here are five characters, both heroes and villains, that Phillippe could end up playing if he strikes a deal with Marvel.

5. Leland Owlsely Jr. (A.K.A. The Real Owl)

This one is a stretch, but could work if done properly. Periodically throughout Daredevil Season 1, Bob Gunton's Leland Owlsley mentioned that he had a son named Lee. Those who have seen Daredevil know that aside from the name, the MCU’s Owlsley hardly had anything in common with his comic book counterpart. Daredevil’s second season could remedy this by introducing Leland Jr. as the MCU’s real Owl. Obviously they wouldn’t be able to mirror his physical appearance from the comic books - Phillippe is much handsomer than the comic book Owl - but they could emphasize his fascination with those birds of prey and give him technology or special abilities that would allow him to take on the blind superhero. As realistic as Daredevil was, this is still a comic book-inspired world, so adding an owl-obsessed super villain with aspirations of controlling the underworld shouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility.

4. Moon Knight

In terms of heroes who are may be better suited on the small screen rather than in theaters, Moon Knight definitely fits. While he has briefly had supernatural abilities, Moon Knight has primarily fought crime using only his fighting skills and gadgets. Like Daredevil, there wouldn’t be any need to pour a lot of money into special and visual effects, since most of the action would be through stunts. A Moon Knight appearance/TV series would also allow deeper exploration of the mystical side of the MCU, specifically the Egyptian gods that led Marc Spector on his mission of justice. At minimum, having Phillippe play Moon Knight would let him wear one of the more unusual costumes from the Marvel universe, looking almost like a white Batman analogue. If the MCU also adapts the multiple personalities aspect of Marc’s background, this would also give Phillippe a unique acting challenge.

3. Punisher

Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, is another character who would be at home at Netflix. Although Punisher’s film rights returned to Marvel years ago, the studio has yet to make a movie starring the gun-toting vigilante. This is primarily due to Marvel wanting their movies to be only PG-13, and when you have a guy toting heavy weaponry and brutally killing every criminal he comes across, there’s no way that movie can avoid an R-rating. However, as we saw with Daredevil, Netflix allows Marvel to delve into much darker corners without severing connections to the MCU, and Daredevil Season 1 showrunner Steven DeKnight has expressed interest in using the Punisher in this capacity. Phillippe is at the right age where it wouldn’t be hard to imagine him having both Castle’s extensive military experience and his own family; and once they’re murdered, that sets him off on the path to vengeance against all evildoers. Maybe gunning down bad guys is what’s in store for Phillippe’s Marvel future.

2. Bullseye

Now that Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk is vague spoiler alert out of the picture, though possibly not for good,Daredevil Season 2 is going to need another member of Matt Murdock’s rogues gallery to cause trouble. Enter Bullseye, the self-proclaimed “man who never misses.” Bullseye has been an adversary of Daredevil’s since the late 1970s, and has been responsible for many tragedies in the Man Without Fear’s life, including killing Elektra. There’s no one else more deserving of a spot as lead antagonist, and as Bullseye, Phillippe would get multiple opportunities to fight Charlie Cox’s Daredevil as the super villain, using any weapon he can get a hold of as a lethal projectile. If Phillippe isn’t looking for an extensive commitment in the MCU, playing a villain would be his best bet, since he could be killed off by the end of the season. The only stipulation: don’t put a target symbol on Phillippe’s forehead and don’t make him over-the-top. Basically, go the opposite route of the 2003 movie and make Phillippe’s an intimidating badass wearing the target-mask.

1. Iron Fist

All of Marvel’s announced Netflix heroes have been cast except one: Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist. Of all the entries on the list, this seems the most probable. Iron Fist will most likely be released in late 2016 or early 2017, which means Marvel needs to find someone to play the martial artist soon. Phillippe already physically resembles Iron Fist in the comics, and best of all, the actor has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, so it should be easy enough for him to perform most of the fighting moves himself. Another thing to consider is that if Phillippe does end up playing the chi-powered superhero, we may see him sooner rather than later. Luke Cage will the next Netflix series to follow A.K.A. Jessica Jones, and much like how Luke is appearing on her show first, Iron Fist could show up on Luke’s show before his own begins. Those two are frequently partners in the comics, so by having Phillippe appear in Luke Cage first, the audience becomes familiar with Iron Fist and his power before the hero’s mythos is delved into in his solo series.

Ryan Phillippe, with his seemingly eternal youthful looks, seems like the kind of guy who should have played at least two superheroes already in his career, like a Chris Evans five years before Chris Evans. Well it looks like Phillippe might finally be getting his chance to shine in the comic book world, as the actor revealed he has met with Marvel about taking on a role in their burgeoning small screen world over at Netflix. Now it just comes down to figuring out what he’ll be playing.

Phillippe appeared on the The Howard Stern Show today and shared this bombshell, although it’s probably important to note that not everything is set in stone – or Iron – just yet. Here’s how he put it.

The way in which he distinctly said “a series” makes it sound like they want to give him the lead for a show, rather than just casting him for a bit part. We can obviously rule him out as the titular hero in Daredevil, A.K.A. Jessica Jones or Luke Cage, but it’s definitely possible that he has a shot at Iron Fist’s alter ego Danny Rand. How good are Phillippe’s martial arts skills?

Luke Cage and Iron Fist technically aren’t set to hit Netflix until either 2016 or 2017, depending on how the streaming service sets up its schedule for those shows. But it’s presumed that the companies are trying to make sure that there are some crossover moments, since the latter three shows are more connected to each other than Daredevil. Marvel could be starting the Iron Fist casting process early on to account for some mixing and matching.

Of course, maybe Marvel and Netflix do actually want him to take on a secondary role somewhere, as there are plenty to go around. A.K.A. Jessica Jones could end up featuring a slew of supporting roles for the storylines that Jones gets invested in. And assuming Luke Cage and Iron Fist follow a similar origin-ish story trajectory, they’ll also have a sizeable selection of recurring characters whose shoes Phillippe can fill. But seriously, they probably wouldn’t be seeking to cast smaller roles this far in advance, unless it’s for Daredevil Season 2. Oh, the options!

Phillippe, who was once in the running to play the Star Wars prequels’ Anakin Skywalker and the DC Universe’s Harvey Dent, is currently starring as a suspected killer trying to fight for his innocence on ABC’s Secrets and Lies. But that show’s limited episode count definitely allows for the actor to keep an open schedule, one in which Marvel can easily step in and slip him a costume.

There was a time when Ryan Phillippe was known more for being "Mr. Reese Witherspoon" than he was for being a noted actor. Phillippe wouldn’t mind us acknowledging this. He has made similar, candid observations about his career and personal life while working the publicity circuit for his latest film, and directorial debut, Catch Hell.

In the film, Phillippe plays a slightly distorted version of himself – a once-famous actor who’s seeking the next big break that will put him back in the conversation at the major studios. Catch Hell evolves into a kidnapping thriller, but there’s enough honesty and autobiographical detail in the script to make you wonder, "Yeah, what did happen to Ryan Phillippe after all of these years?" The dude was in a number of engaging films over the course of his career. And yet, he readily admits to The L.A. Times, "I’ve made 30-plus films over 20 years. And in my opinion, five of them are good."

Is he right? And if so, which five are the "good" ones on Ryan Phillippe’s resume. Let’s spitball a few educated guesses.

Flags of Our Fathers

Many would argue that the follow-up film, Letters from Iwo Jima, was the better of Clint Eastwood’s two World War II dramas released in 2006 (and they would be right). But from Phillippe’s own perspective, the opportunity to work with an icon like Eastwood on a pedigreed war-effort picture about a seminal moment of American history has to feel like a win. I’m willing to bet Ryan Phillippe’s proud that Flags of Our Fathers is part of his filmography.

Gosford Park

Long before our nation’s Downton Abbey craze, Robert Altman gracefully weaved through the lives of British aristocrats and the servants who knew every inch of their daily existences. Again, Phillippe gets to study under a legend in Robert Altman, and call Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith and many others colleagues. Gosford Park earned multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It has to be a highlight for the 40-year-old Phillippe.

Crimson Tide

It doesn’t matter that Phillippe had a small part in Tony Scott’s harrowing submarine thriller. When the actor is combing over his past conquests and pointing out the movies that actually worked (and worked well), there’s no way he can overlook the expertly paced, energetically acted standoff act that dialed back on Tony Scott’s usual flourishes and kept the cameras focused on Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. Never a bad idea.

Crash

Listen, I don’t care for Paul Haggis’ Crash. It’s manipulative, ham-fisted and overly melodramatic. But the people who like Crash ADORE it, and I’m quite sure Ryan Phillippe’s proud of the work that he did in the sprawling ensemble for this eventual Best Picture winner. Yep, Ryan Phillipps starred in a Best Picture winner. This wouldn’t be on my list, but it’s likely on his. Right?

Cruel Intentions

You’re damn right Cruel Intentions makes this list. It’s easy to make forgettable, throwaway shlock in Hollywood. But it’s extremely difficult to make memorable shlock that purposefully pushes the envelope of good taste to get a rise out of an audience. Cruel Intentions didn’t put its young cast on the map. But it helped us see them in a different light, opening up doors for Phillippe, his eventual wife Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair.

It’s worth noting that Phillippe low-balls his own career, as this list easily could have included The Way of the Gun, Stop-Loss, 54, I Know What You Did Last Summer, White Squall, Igby Goes Down, The Lincoln Lawyer and, obviously, MacGruber.

Cruel Intentions. It was an adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos's Dangerous Liaisons made for Generation Y. It was a hit romance that starred real-life couple Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, who later married. And now it's a bit of nostalgia that's helped the divorced pair reconcile their shared past for the sake of their kids.

The Huffington Post recently spoke with Ryan Phillippe, who shared a charming story about how Cruel Intentions has helped smooth the relationship between himself and ex-wife Reese Witherspoon. Phillipe described learning how to co-parent while divorced as a "feeling out process," but notes he and Witherspoon have managed a balance when it comes to raising their kids, who are now 15 (Ava) and 10 (Deacon). He recalled a visit the four shared while Witherspoon was in New York City promoting both Gone Girl and Wild:

Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon were dating before Cruel Intentions shot, which may have lent some of the sizzle to their scenes together playing the sultry playboy Sebastian Valmont and the sugary sweet virgin Annette Hargrove. While their characters' romance was thwarted in the movie (by that villainous coke fiend played with scintillating viciousness by Sarah Michelle Gellar), Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon married shortly after the movie premiered on March 5th, 1999.

From there, Reese Witherspoon went on to star in such well-received features as Election, Legally Blonde and Walk The Line, which won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. For his part, Ryan Phillippe landed roles in such heralded dramas as Gosford Park, Igby Goes Down and Flags of Our Fathers. But he did not find the prolonged commercial success of his wife. When the two divorced in the fall of 2007, a collective gasp came from twenty-somethings who'd had pictures of this beautiful and happy couple in their high school lockers. But this isn't an unhappy ending.

While there marriage hasn't lasted, Phillippe and Witherspoon's admiration for each other has, allowing them to be great parents to their kids as well as a new kind of inspirations to their fans.

MacGruber certainly gave Ryan Phillippe a lot more respect in the filmmaking community, or at least in our eyes, but who knew it would be the turning point that saw him go from Ryan Phillipe the actor, to Ryan Phillippe the actor-writer-director. Sure, there were brief stints in between, like a recurring role on Damages and playing the baddie in The Lincoln Lawyer, but it was obviously the impeccably crafted SNL comedy that inspired the still young thespian to make a movie himself, one about fading movie star kidnapped while shooting an indie flick in Louisiana.

Variety reports that Phillippe will write, direct and star in Shreveport, an indie thriller about a down and out actor taken from his film set, held hostage and tortured for, well, reasons still unknown. Perhaps the fictional star made a movie as bad as 54 and audiences are out for revenge? Phillippe co-wrote the script with first time writer Joe Gossett and, since it's being produced by Mark Burg's Twisted Pictures (Saw), I bet the incident gets quite messy. Shreveport is set to shoot in uh, Shreveport, Louisiana sometime this summer and we'll await word on who'll be joining Phillippe on-screen for his first time behind the camera.

As the article notes, Phillippe has worked with a lot of very talented directors and could easily have picked up a lot of good habits. I wonder if working for experienced filmmakers like Ridley Scott, Robert Altman, Clint Eastwood, Kimberly Peirce and Jorma Taccone will rub off? Yes, Jorma Taccone! Seriously. I love MacGruber and if Shreveport at any point turns sour I will simply imagine that the kidnappers have grabbed Lt. Dixon Piper to enacting revenge on behalf of KFBR392. There's your sequel. Please. Please make a sequel.

Behind every great man, there’s a great woman, right? Well, that’s certainly the case with the Bang Bang Club. While the real life photographer foursome risked their lives snapping images in the violent townships of South Africa at the end of Apartheid in the early 90s, photo editor Robin Comley held things together at the office, ensuring their work was seen and also just keeping them as level-headed as possible while working in the midst of such a devastating environment.

In the film version of the Bang Bang Club’s story, Malin Akerman assumes the role of Robin Comley. The film kicks off as Greg Marinovich (Ryan Phillippe) is inducted into the group and hits the dirt alongside Kevin Carter, Joao Silva and Ken Oosterbroek (Taylor Kitsch, Neels Van Jaarsveld, Frank Rautenbach). Together they were seemingly unstoppable, dashing into the line of fire with no-fear attitudes and catching a slew of visually stimulating, some award winning, images. However, ultimately the danger and horror of the situation seeps in and the group is rattled emotionally and physically.

Akerman has revisited an old role in The Heartbreak Kid and brought a graphic novel character to life in Watchmen, but there’s really nothing like portraying a real person on the big screen. Akerman was fortunate enough not only to meet Robin Comley, but to shoot the film in the same exact location in which the real events took place. Just before the film's Tribeca Film Festival debut, Akerman sat down to tell us all about her experience in South Africa, from working with Comley to diving into the local culture, shooting a particularly emotional scene in the film and much more. Hear it all for yourself in the video interview below.

It’s quite obvious why a group of photographers preferred the name The Bang Bang Club to The Bang Bang Paparazzi. Then again, what do you call a team who makes a living snapping combat photos never lifting a finger to help the innocent? Smartly, writer-director Steven Silver let’s you decide that for yourself, not turning his first feature narrative, based on a true story, into a message film, rather an experience making it all the more profound.

The Bang Bang Club opens with Kevin Carter (Taylor Kitsch) in the midst of a radio interview focusing on his line of work. After being stumped by a question probing for what he thinks makes a good photo, we cut to four years earlier, April 1994, post Apartheid South Africa. When photographer Greg Marinovich (Ryan Phillippe) boldly treks into a notoriously violent workers hostel and not only survives, but emerges with a selection of fantastic pictures, he’s initiated into a group of photographers who work together to capture the violence regardless of the risk.

Kevin, Greg, Ken Oosterbroek (Frank Rautenbach) and Joao Silva (Neels Van Jaarsveld) go from township to township on the lookout for anything and everything dangerous. Seemingly indestructible, the team dodges bullets and soaks in some of the most horrific visuals without letting their composure crack in the slightest. However, there’s just so long their good fortune lasts and ultimately not only do they pay the price mentally, but physically, too.

The Bang Bang Club starts off rather slow. While Kevin’s radio interview turns out to be a rather nice bookend, it makes for an uninteresting opening. However, once we’re in the battlefield alongside the photographers, the pace really starts to pick up. On the other hand, what doesn’t increase is the amount of character development. It takes a long time to get to know these guys. While we learn a lot about what they do and the rules of the game, watching them jump from street fight to street fight, it isn’t until about halfway through that we really get to know who they are as people and not just as photographers.

Luckily, Silver has the backdrop of the final days of apartheid to hold you over until we can get into the characters’ heads. The daily events during this time are disturbing, but intriguing. Silver shows just enough gruesome imagery to make you understand the devastation, but never goes overboard, always keeping you itching for more. It’s this interest in the state of the region that keeps you engaged until the characters are developed to the point that they can take you the rest of the way.

Both Rautenbach and Van Jaarsveld assume supporting positions, but make waves with them. Their characters’ idiosyncrasies are so well conveyed that even with less screen time than Kitsch and Phillippe, you really feel like you know them and, in turn, honestly care for them. However, this is certainly more Kitsch and Phillippe’s show. Both Kevin and Greg have incredible arcs, starting off as determined and upbeat, but then being consumed by the horrors their career packs.

While Kitsch does an excellent job taking Kevin from happy-go-lucky to deeply disturbed, it’s Phillippe’s transformation that’s the easier to identify with and Silver knows it. We do see quite a bit of the other three men, but the camera appropriately always comes back to Phillippe and he makes good use of the additional screen time. Greg is likeable right from the start. He’s a little naïve, but proves he does know what he’s doing and has good intentions. As the dreadful events seep through his skin, they infiltrate the audience’s as well and when Greg starts to break down you feel it, too.

Further rounding out his character is his love interest. Robin Comley (Malin Akerman). She’s the photo editor so doesn’t hit the ground running with the guys, but after a long day’s work, the action always shifts back to the safety of the town in which their headquarters is located and, in turn, lands Greg back into her arms. The relationship kicks off a little abruptly, but ultimately the chemistry is strong enough that there’s no denying the romance is real. You’d think hanging back as an editor would leave Akerman out of the action, but a surprisingly significant amount of tension arises from the seemingly simple editorial decisions. However, at one point she does accompany Greg on one of his exploits and while there’s little danger in this particular moment, the sequence is quite intense.

In addition to the situation in South Africa and the lives of these photographers, Silver artfully slips in the morality of their job. At first, you catch yourself wondering how they can just watch people die, but soon you’re swept up in the high of the gig, much like The Bang Bang Club. When the glory dulls for them, it does for you, too and that conflict of integrity begins to creep in. Silver never rubs it in your face, rather lets the concept simmer until it’s opportune to boil over so as to be impactful without being imposing.

Silver really almost nails it with The Bang Bang Club. The handheld shooting style is wildly appropriate, the action captured in an all-encompassing yet perspective manner and the performances are of the best quality resulting in piece with the power to stick with you long after the credits roll. There are a number of minor issues including some extremely short and expendable scenes and a confusing time lapse, but these are mere minimal bumps in the road of what’s an incredibly exciting yet troubling film.

Talk to most actors and they’ll tell you that it’s always more fun to play the villain. Thanks to societal rules, most of us have the decency to act civil towards one another, but there’s something freeing about letting your id loose and take control. It’s something that Ryan Phillippe most certainly got to do in his most recent film, Brad Furman’s The Lincoln Lawyer.

In the film, Phillippe plays a young, rich man who Matthew McConaughey’s character takes on as a client, believing in his innocence, but he slowly learns that the money he has been receiving has been coming from some very, very evil hands. Speaking with the actor as part of a roundtable interview, he discussed how he went about finding the mindset for such a despicable character, the hardest scenes that he had to shoot and what it was like shooting so close to home. You look like you were really reveling in playing the bad guy.

I really was and I don’t know what that says about me but I enjoyed it, it’s fun to be the bad guy, it just is.

How do you get into that mindset?

In my career I’ve often played the protagonist or the hero of the movie and there are so many rules inherent to that role. The audience needs to stay with you, needs to identify with you, like you. When you play the bad guy those rules go out the window, there’s so much freedom there. The bulk of my research had to do with the novel and how that became such a reference tool, a bible for both Matthew [McConaughey] and I to check in with before we filmed certain scenes. And I also spent some time watching Joran van der Sloot. I had been watching interviews of him. I thought there was something about his arrogance, about his belief that he would get away with what he’s done that I thought related to this. But beyond that, it was just about trying to f with Matthew. You know, some scenes he’d win, some scenes I’d win, we didn’t rehearse very much intentionally, so that it would be fresh and we would be able to catch each other off guard, and I think we had pretty good, like, dude chemistry together.

What was your initial reaction upon reading the character they wanted you to play?

You know they didn’t want me to play, necessarily. I had to fight for it, I had to audition for this, which is not always the case at this point in my career. But this character’s function to the movie is pretty integral so if it didn’t work that may have meant to the film itself didn’t work. So I think it was important to the filmmakers to see what an actor might do with it. Brad [Furman] told me about 200 guys auditioned for this part, and I was one of them, I had to go in. And that doesn’t bother me I think that makes sense. As I move into directing there are certain parts you kind of need to see what someone’s going to do with it and I felt like I had a good grasp, so I was ready to go and do that. The other reason, the motivating factor behind that is that a lot of what I’ve been reading the last couple of years has been thin and one dimensional and uninspiring, and so to read something that was like, I could actually sink my teeth in. That’s why we ended up with the ensemble we did. We have great actors in small-ish parts because of that fact because actors want substance and there just isn’t a lot of that out there right now.

What was it like working with Brad Furman?

It was great, you know we’re both from the same area and we are the same age so we have a lot of similar, cultural-type stones and that sort of thing. The greatest thing about Brad in reference to this movie is that in the hands of an older, more seasoned director, I think it could have fallen into more predictable territory. I think the fact that he was so, it was so important to him to really emphasize the hip-hop aspect of it, and to make sure that he shook it up, that there was an edge. That I think comes from the fact that he’s young, and that this is all still relatively new to him, and he was determined for it not to be boring. There were days on the set where if we were shooting something and he felt like it was standard he was like, “This is the most boring scene I’ve ever seen in my life!” And this is the director and so you try to find a way to kind of, like, just shake it up. I love that, I love that candor and his passion.

Is it easier to play someone evil? You know, you can let out and be kind of cathartic and therapeutic.

Absolutely, I think so. I mean, in terms of it being easier, I’m not sure. But it’s certainly more fun. And yeah, you know we all have some element of darkness however that manifests and I think its kind of cool to get it out of your system and go home and cook dinner for the kids. You know it’s like, when I was younger, it was much more difficult for me to separate myself from the work I was doing, like I was just stupid and dramatic and whatever, I’d get caught up in it. And now, as soon as they say wrap I’m out. I’m back to me, I’m in the car, the hip-hop’s on, I’m going home. It’s a much different approach now.

How difficult were the reenactments of the crime? I mean, because you kind of get a bit rough there.

Yeah, that certainly, all jokes aside, was the most difficult for me. I’ve got three sisters, I have a daughter, violence against women is beyond repugnant to me, and I’m incredibly sensitive. So two of the actresses and even a stunt woman, who often like to project that they are tougher than you are, I was really nervous for them and so at that point I didn’t feel like I was completely as lost or as immersed in those moments as I’d like to be because I was too concerned for their welfare. But, you know, those things are so heavily choreographed and rehearsed. That is the one part of the movie that it’s absolutely a must that you do over, over, and over, like a dance because the margin of error is very slim and people get injured on film sets all the time and I certainly didn’t want to be responsible for that.

Did everyone stay safe?

Yeah they did. But there was a take in which I threw the stunt woman through this mirror, and it’s real glass and she’s laying on the ground, surrounded by these jagged shards of mirror and it was not what I was supposed to do in the scene. I picked her up out of it as soon as they called cut and I think they kept it rolling. I think it’s still in the movie but I literally, I was so worried about her moving in any direction and being sliced open that I physically lifted her and carried her out of the mess.

Were those scenes harder because Michael had taken a lot of that from his personal journalism, so they were somewhat more real I guess?

I never really spoke to Michael [Connelly] until we were pretty well into shooting. I think he wanted to respect us. He certainly had approval of the script and how it was shaped, but he wasn’t... I know I could have reached out to him but it just, it never seemed germane really. But you know that sort of stuff is ugly no matter where it comes from.

At this point in your career how do you go about deciding what roles you’re going to play or what roles you’d like to play?

Well I know that one thing, you know I haven’t had the most successful box office career by any stretch, but I do like that I’m not so defined yet. You don’t look at me and say, “Oh that guy only makes those kind of movies,” or “He only plays those kind of parts.” If that were to ever happen I think I would lose all interest so it’s pretty much...and also at the same time you can have what looks like a great character and otherwise awful script and that’s not worth your while either so it really has to be about the totality of it and a story that compels you. I only want to make movies I want to see. And that may mean that my career is somewhat limited, but that is my version of integrity. That way, no matter what, how it performs, or how it’s received, I can be okay with it. I think the idea of being in a hugely successful movie that you don’t like would be just as bad as being in a film that you love that no one sees. I just, I wouldn’t want that kind of success, one that felt cheap or that I didn’t own.

What are you working on now?

I’m about to start shooting a movie called Chronicle in New York with Justin Long and John Hawks from Winter’s Bone, Ben Foster and Kate Mara, and it’s sort of the Wall Street of marijuana distribution it’s based on a short story. And I’ve got a film coming out called the Bang Bang Club about combat photographers at the end of apartheid. And I finished this action movie with Bruce Willis called The Setup this winter.

Those sound like great ones.

Is part of the appeal is that it is a real true LA story, kind of keeps you close to home?

Oh yeah I mean because I’ve done nearly thirty movies now and parts of four have shot in LA. You hate having to go on location, especially once you have children. It was so great to be able to come home every day and sleep in my own bed and have dinner with the kids or see friends on the weekends. Also, LA has been a character in so many movies, but not necessarily from this perspective. You often see the palm tree lined streets of Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Malibu, but that’s… less than five percent of the citizens of the city live that way, so you’re kind of seeing a more authentic, gritty, LA, I think.

Will you go back and visit?

Downtown? Well I had lived here almost fifteen years and hadn’t spent that much time downtown and I kind of fell in love with it. I found, there’s this diner, The Nickel Diner down there that I take the kids to. They have all these crazy donut flavors and stuff, and there’s that sausage place Wurstküche that I discovered down there this German sausage, they have their rattlesnake sausage and rabbit sausage so it’s really, really interesting. So there’s some undiscovered gems down there that I’ve come to love.

Marisa Tomei’s career has undergone a renaissance in recent years, mostly because she seems willing to show up in just about any movie to play “that girl who gets naked and sleeps with the protagonist”. It works for her. Made her more respectable than ever. Those jokes about her My Cousin Vinnie Oscar have even sort of stopped. Hollywood starlets take note: Getting naked on screen may be the best thing you’ll ever do.

Amongst these new clips from The Lincoln Lawyer you’ll see Tomei doing her girl who strips for the hero thing again, along with scenes involving Ryan Phillipe being a total creep, and clip in which a long-haired William H. Macy pretty much spoils the plot of the entire film. Maybe the marketing minds behind the film figure that since the movie’s based on the book, spoilers don’t matter, but if you haven’t read the book yet and don’t want to be spoiled, you might want to skip the third of the three clips below. While all of the Lincoln Lawyer’s trailers have been pretty wishy-washy on the subject of what’s really going on here, is Ryan Phillipe guilty or isn’t he, these clips make the whole thing pretty clear. “You’ve got one client in jail, for what your other client did,” explains William H. Macy’s character. There’s your conflict. How will Matthew McConaughey handle it? Normally he’d take care of business by ripping his shirt off, but this seems like a better, more focused Matt McC. He’s intense, kind of like back in the days when everyone still thought he could act.

Matthew McConaughey has spent much of the last decade making some really bad movies, from Surfer, Dude to Failure To Launch. The truth is, though, that the man once had some serious chops and potential, making movies like A Time To Kill and Dazed and Confused. With any luck, The Lincoln Lawyer may be able to bring him back to respectability.

Apple has posted the second trailer for the legal thriller, based on the book by Michael Connelly. In the film, McConaughey plays Mickey Haller, a defense attorney who, in lieu of having an office, works in the backseat of a Lincoln town car. One day he is given a case involving a playboy named Louis Roulet, who is being charged with rape and attempted murder. It seems like the case of a lifetime, but things get serious when Haller can't tell if he is defending a guilty man and his life is put on the line.

I'm as skeptical as one can get when looking at a possible career shift for Matthew McConaughey, but even I must admit that this movie looks decent. It could just be the fact that it's a well cut trailer or that McConaughey isn't putting on his stoned, bongo-playing persona again, but this film looks like it could bring the high tension chills that come with a solid legal thriller. The actor made a dramatic name for himself playing a lawyer in A Time To Kill. Maybe he'll reawaken his career with one too. MacGruber is not, even for a second, half as clever as the SNL sketches it’s based upon. Instead it’s an unending string of easy scatological jokes which, despite being easy, it executes really, really well. There’s a sex scene in the latter half of the film that’s sure to be discussed endlessly, and it doesn’t hurt that all the shit references are set to a score composed primarily of perfectly hilarious light rock. Still, it’s hard not to be disappointed that they didn’t find something cleverer to do with this character. I’d have been happier with a movie comprised entirely of 90 second vignettes in which MacGruber gets inexplicably blown up again, and again, and again. That doesn’t happen; in fact almost none of the things anyone who’s seen the sketch is hoping for occur (though the theme song, at least, does cameo in a much less entertaining theatrical form). MacGruber doesn’t even attempt to defuse a single bomb. He does however rip out a few throats, and that’s enough to make MacGruber funnier than any SNL movie since Wayne’s World 2. Ok, it’s not exactly a stiff competition.

It stars a mulleted Will Forte as MacGruber, the character he originated on SNL, a pseudo-MacGyver clone who seems permanently trapped in a particularly bad 80s action movie. In the sketches MacGruber’s entire life consisted of trying to diffuse something, only to be distracted just long enough for the bomb to go off and kill them all. In the movie, he’s some sort of uber-commando hired to stop an evil plot by a villain named Cunth (Val Kilmer). That’s right, Cunth. That’s about the level most of the jokes in MacGruber work on. See it’s funny because his name sounds like a rude name for a woman’s vagina.

At least I know why Val Kilmer is in the movie. He’s there to look angry while people make fun of his name. I can’t, however, explain the presence of Ryan Phillippe who’s about as important to the film as a block of wood. I mean I guess he has a character arc, if by character arc you mean that at some point he discovers a new, disgusting use for celery. But really, his job is a thankless one, the useless straight man who stands around and looks angry while MacGruber does something dumb. In the sketches the third part of the MacGruber/Vicki triangle was essential. Shia LaBeouf’s turn in the part on SNL is legendary. Phillippe is, however, given absolutely nothing to work with.

It’s also worth noting that, though he appeared in the SNL sketch and though there was a part written for him into early drafts of the MacGruber script, Richard Dean Anderson does not make a cameo in the film. When questioned afterward director Jorma Taccone was reticent to explain his absence. If I were Anderson, I wouldn’t have done it either. The movie trades mostly on shock humor, and the primary question occupying Taccone’s mind seems to be what’s inside MacGruber’s ass. It’s less a MacGyver parody than Lethal Weapon with anal play. Still, as dumb as most of the jokes are, they play well in a big crowd. Taccone and Forte took a completely lunatic, ridiculous, concept and turned it into a bunch of dick jokes. It’s funny, and you won't regret seeing it, but I think enough of them to believe that they could have done better.

And so the Captain America casting saga continues. Just a few hours ago we told you about Ryan Phillippe being added to the list of potentials and now, according to THR, Channing Tatum has joined the party as well. Hopes were high that we’d find our Captain sooner than later after Scott Porter, Michael Cassidy and John Krasinski were eliminated from the competition. But now, thanks to Phillippe and Tatum’s addition, we’re practically back to where we started.

Tatum has only been approached for the role and unlike his counterparts, has yet to schedule or take part in a screen test or reading. He certainly has that superhero-esque vibe to him, but that’s clearly not the case with Captain America’s alter ego, the scrawny Steve Rogers. Of course he could pull a Christian Bale and drop 60 pounds as THR suggests, but is he even capable of shedding his tough guy persona? Regardless, my order of Captain America preference is as follows: Mike Vogel, Garrett Hedland, Ryan Phillippe, Channing Tatum and Wilson Bethel.

The Cap chat is getting a little tedious, so it’s a good thing the article introduces a new topic, the casting of the hero’s love interest. Rumor has it that lady will be Betsy Ross, but the details are being kept under wraps. What’s no longer a secret is the actress who has a chance to take that role. Keira Knightley has been approached with the offer, but the studio is also considering other candidates. This could work particularly well if Phillippe nabs the lead role. Even though she’s just 24-years-old, Knightley has a more mature look that would be complimented by an older co-star.

As for Hugo Weaving, he’s still in the midst of negotiations to secure the role of the film’s villain, Red Skull.

UPDATE: Deadline Hollywood is reporting that in addition to Knightley, Alice Eve and Emily Blunt are also options for the lead female role and that character is named Peggy, not Betsy Ross. Peggy Carter was Captain America’s love interest during World War II and an American agent with the French Resistance.

Wait a minute. Another actor in the running for the lead in Captain America? Yes, it’s true; yet another name has been thrown into the mix as a potential candidate to wield the shield. We’ve already got Chris Evans, Garrett Hedland, Wilson Bethel, Mike Vogel and now, none other than Ryan Phillippe.

While at SXSW, Phillippe told MTV, "[I] actually am going in to meet on Captain America, which is kind of cool.” Maybe it’s cool for you, but it’s not cool for all of us who now have even more to sort through until the role is officially cast. Well, actually, it is kind of cool. Phillippe could make a fantastic superhero.

He rocks a military uniform in the upcoming action comedy MacGruber, so why not give Captain America’s suit a shot? Phillippe has never really done anything to suggest he’s capable of playing a superhero, but certainly has the resume to prove he can pull it off. However, I’m still partial to Vogel. I really want the guy to get his big break. I’m not a soap opera fan so don’t know much about Bethel (The Young and the Restless) and Evans already has a super hero (The Human Torch from Fantastic Four). As for Hedlund, he’s my second pick, but that could change after the release of Tron Legacy. I guess that’d put Phillippe at #3.

Now that SNL digital short helmer Jorma Taccone is locked in to direct the MacGruber movie, that means it’s time to start looking for a cast. Will Forte will of course, play MacGruber and Kristen Wiig is still involved as his helpful assistant. But guess who they’re bringing in to play the villain? Val Kilmer. No really. Also in negotiations to join the cast, Ryan Phillipe.

Clearly this is going to be more than just the usual shitty SNL movie. This is not Night at the Roxbury. Here’s how THR says Phillipe and Kilmer fit in to MacGruber’s master plan:

“The legendary, much decorated MacGruber is pulled out of retirement as a monk in Ecuador by a colonel, who needs him once more to fight on behalf of his country. This time the mission involves going up against the evil Cunth, who has a nuclear warhead; the mission is personal because Cunth killed MacGruber's bride.” Phillipe will play Piper, an Army officer forced to pair up with MacGruber. Kilmer will of course, be a total Cunth.

Sounds great, the only thing missing is a variety of mid-life crises to distract MacGruber from disarming various bombs. Someone needs call up Shia LaBeouf, bring him back as MacGruber’s gay son. While you’re at it, get on the phone to Pespsi. Pepsuber needs feature film sponsorship.
