It’s official: after Ryan Gosling talked about it, he really is going to play Ghost Rider. His upcoming Marvel movie was announced at San Diego Comic-Con, and along with it came news about who is directing it. I have to say, while the announcement about the Project Hail Mary actor did not surprise me one bit, the director they chose did leave me shocked.

Fresh off filming Star Wars: Starfighter, together, Gosling will team up with director Shawn Levy for Ghost Rider. You read that right, these two are jumping from one massive franchise to another together, and to me, that’s very, very exciting!

When it comes to Gosling’s casting, I can’t say I’m shocked. A few months ago, when he was promoting the release of Project Hail Mary on the 2026 movie schedule, he was asked on Happy Sad Confused about potentially playing Ghost Rider. He admitted he’d had conversations with Kevin Feige, calling it a “complicated situation” at the time. He’s spoken about this before then too, saying he had a “feeling” about this character. So, clearly, the manifestation worked.

However, while this announcement felt like it could be coming, the news that Levy would be on this journey with him was unexpected.

It’s shocking because they literally were just working on a Star Wars film. So, to jump almost immediately to Marvel is giving me whiplash. It will be a quick turnaround too, because one year after their upcoming Star Wars movie is released on the 2027 movie schedule, Ghost Rider will come out in 2028.

I do think these two are great fits for the MCU, overall. So, I’m thrilled to see them teaming up for this exciting project that Gosling’s been wanting to do. Clearly, they had such a good time on Star Wars that they wanted to make another massive movie together, and I’m ecstatic it’s Ghost Rider. Of course, this won’t be Levy’s first rodeo with Marvel; he did direct the well-reviewed Deadpool & Wolverine, and he’s spent his career making action and adventure movies. So, it makes perfect sense why he's been tapped to ride with Ghost Rider. However, the speed at which he and Gosling signed on to another major project together is what got me.

Listen, while people have a right to be anxious and question these choices, I think we should give these guys a chance.

It would seem whatever they did together on Star Wars made them want to collaborate again. So, I think we should all be excited about the fact that Ryan Gosling and Shawn Levy will be jumping from a galaxy far, far away to a world populated by superheroes as they prepare to fly with Starfighter and ride with Ghost Rider over the course of the next two years.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s existence has garnered a major fan following, and that’s evident due to the viral conversations that surround it. Over the years, plenty of fans have taken to the web to discuss not only existing films and TV shows in the franchise but also upcoming Marvel movies and series. Studio head honcho Kevin Feige is definitely no stranger to such chatter at this point, and he recently admitted that. Additionally, Feige spoke about handling the discourse, which can even incite “panic” in some cases.

It would be impossible for me to count the exact number of MCU-related theories I’ve come across since the interconnected universe began in 2008. For me, personally, it can be a bit overwhelming to keep track of all the discussions being had on social media. So it’s been hard for me to even imagine how Feige has handled it all these years. The producer shared some insight into that during the dedication of Kevin Feige Division of Film & Television Production at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. During that discussion, Feige said:

Feige also noted that while Marvel had long interacted with its fans on some level, such communication “can be wielded with such force now that you have to be beware.” He also advised that tuning in to too much of the chatter will “crush you.” Joining Feige for that event at USC were directors Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy and Black Panther’s Ryan Coogler, and Levy echoed his colleague’s sentiments on the social media discussions. Levy and Feige also discussed (via THR) the pressure with test screening reactions:

• Feige: It happens when you’ve already spent almost $200 million on a movie and you screen it for people and they’re like, ‘What was that?’
• Levy: And then the panic sets in. You panic, feel like shit, and then you go back to work.

Test screenings are a polarizing (but heavily relied-upon) part of the rollout process for a film, and that’s no different for Marvel Studios. Such early reactions can also stoke up conversations online. For instance, many surely took notice when the earliest reactions to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 made their way online in early 2017, and that may have also been true just last year when a fan shared their thoughts after a Thunderbolts* test screening. All in all, Feige doesn’t seem to be dismissing fan discussions in general, though he just seems to be of the belief that it’s unwise to consume too much of it.

As of late, there have been plenty of MCU theories making the rounds, with some of the most popular ones being linked to some major upcoming films. For example, there are those who’ve gone down the rabbit hole while reading theories about Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. There’s also an assumption running around about how this franchise may be rebooted after 2027’s Secret Wars.

Kevin Feige, of course, holds the answers to all those secrets and knows what Marvel’s ultimate plan is. Considering that, it makes sense that he would prefer not to pay too much attention to the noise and instead, remain focused on his work. In the age of social media, that may be solid advice for everyone – MCU fan or not. Those who are fans of the superhero franchise, however, can grab a Disney+ subscription and stream MCU shows and movies.

When Disney bought Lucasfilm, it threw the franchise into overdrive, and between 2015 and 2019, we got five movies, nearly doubling the total number of Star Wars films made since 1977. And yet, since 2019, there’s been nothing on the big screen. Starting with the 2026 movie schedule, that all changes, as at least two Star Wars movies are definitely happening, and it appears that people who make movies, like Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg, are just as excited as the rest of us.

Steven Spielberg has a long association with George Lucas, so it’s not surprising that he stopped by for a visit. He likely wanted to see what this new film would be doing with the franchise his friend launched almost 50 years ago. One imagines that Spielberg and Levy could have had one hell of a conversation about the past and future and Star Wars, and I would have loved to have heard that.

And then one day, Tom Cruise flew in on a helicopter.

Shawn Levy says that he suggested Tom Cruise pick up a camera and start filming as a joke, but Cruise took him seriously, ending up “up to his ankles in mud and pond water” to film a lightsaber battle. And honestly, does it shock anybody that Tom Cruise, a guy who throws himself off mountains, would just jump at the chance to shoot part of a Star Wars movie?

According to the story, Cruise was only there visiting and ended up behind a camera for fun, so don’t expect to see him appear in Star Wars: Starfighter (although we’ve seen more than our share of Star Wars celebrity cameos in the past, so anything is possible). But now, when we’re all watching Starfighter in 2027, and you watch the big lightsaber fight, you’ll know who to thank for it. Levy continues…

I’m already excited for Star Wars: Starfighter, and while the movie is over a year away, we’re only a few months from the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu that will mark Star Wars' official return to theaters. It’s about to be a very exciting time to be a Star Wars fan again, for both the very famous and everybody else, too.

The 2026 movie schedule has something we haven’t seen in a long time. It’s been over five years since The Rise of Skywalker became the last Star Wars movie to be on the big screen. This year, we will get The Mandalorian and Grogu, bringing the franchise’s small-screen hit to theaters, but that's not the only upcoming Star Wars movie. A year later, we’ll actually get another big-screen Star Wars adventure in Star Wars: Starfighter.

The latter film will star Ryan Gosling and is directed by Shawn Levy. Levy just officially wrapped one major franchise, as a producer/director of Stranger Things, and he recently told THR that the Netflix series helped prepare him for directing the movie in a galaxy far, far away. It showed him that, as big as a movie might feel, what’s important to a story is often quite small. He explained….

Even though we haven’t seen Star Wars on the big screen in quite some time, despite numerous attempts to get Star Wars movies made, you’d still have to call it one of the biggest franchises ever. It’s not hard to imagine a director becoming at least a bit intimidated by it all. There are expectations both on the fan side (that the movie will live up to some of the biggest blockbusters ever mad) and likely a lot of expectations on the other side as well. Specifically, that the movie will be a big hit and bring in a lot of box office money.

One thing that might be working in Shawn Levy’s favor here is that Star Wars: Starfighter is going to be something unlike any Star Wars movie we’ve seen so far. It won’t have three seasons of television that preceded it, and as far as we’re aware, it’s not connected to the massive big-screen franchise beyond taking place in the same universe. It’s a completely standalone entry with new characters and an original story.

That at least has the potential to allow Levy to not consider the massive scale of the franchise in the same way that another Star Wars movie, like the planned new Daisy Ridley film that will continue the story of Rey, will have to do. At the same time, in both cases, Levy is almost certainly correct that the “human scale’ of the movie is what’s important. If the movie tells a compelling story with equally compelling characters, fans will likely enjoy it.

Starfighter being disconnected to the larger Skywalker Saga should presumably allow Levy to make bold narrative choices without worrying about their implications for the franchise as a whole. Star Wars has been away from theaters for years following The Rise of Skywalker's ending, so it seems like a great time for Lucasfilm to take some risks.

Rogue One and Solo both focused on regular, non-Force users in the Star Wars franchise, which also added to their stakes. It remains to be seen what Levy is planning for Starfighter, but it might be interesting if the Jedi are left out of its story and action sequences.

All will be revealed when Star Wars: Starfighter hits theaters on May 28th, 2027. Since it's not on the 2026 movie release list, we might have to wait a while before we get any concrete information about its contents.

Stranger Things is nearing the end of its run and, at this point, many are still reeling from the first four episodes of Season 5. Of course, the biggest topic of discussion is arguably that massive Will Byers twist, which involved the teen unlocking his psychic abilities, courtesy of the evil Vecna. There was also another major surprise in that fourth episode, though, as the series also revealed the return of a long-absent character. Now, the show’s producers are discussing that creative choice and simultaneously shutting down a long-running rumor.

The end of "Sorcerer" also sees Eleven and Jim Hopper infiltrating a military facility in the Upside Down, where they believe Vecna is being held. Hopper ultimately implores El to stay put, as he plans to enter the containment unit (and sacrifice himself in an effort to destroy the villain once and for all). However, El is not only surprised to see Hop return but to also find that the powerful psychic being held in the chamber is none other than her surrogate sister, Kali Prasad/Eight – a moment I wasn’t expecting amid the 2025 TV schedule.

By now, a number of fans probably know Kali plays a key role in Season 2’s “The Lost Sister,” which received mixed reviews from fans and critics. In the years since that episode premiered, it’s been alleged that the episode was meant to serve as a backdoor pilot for a potential spinoff involving Kali and her crew, which I honestly believed to be a somewhat plausible notion But, when producers Matt & Ross Duffer and Shawn Levy caught up with SFX Magazine on CinemaBlend, Levy poured water on the offshoot theory:

Although neither Levy nor the Duffer Brothers ever confirmed the spinoff assumption, I always thought the Kali-centered Season 2 episode had backdoor pilot written all over it. Levy’s recent comments, though, suggest that the Duffers simply wanted to take a stab at doing a true bottle episode that took the action away from Hawkins, Indiana and to the streets of Chicago. As for why now was the time to bring Kali back, Matt Duffer explained how he and his brother landed on that decision:

The last time fans saw “Eight” (who’s played by Linnea Berthelsen) she was escaping the police with her cohorts. What exactly transpired in the time since that happened and ahead of her being experimented upon by scientists is unclear. Matt Duffer did, however, drop a sweet tease in regard to how Kali figures into Season 5 moving forward:

At this point, I’m also wondering if Stranger Things Season 5 – which has garnered massive viewership numbers – will bring back any other unaccounted-for characters. For instance, one of my colleagues astutely pointed out that Paul Reiser’s Dr. Owens is still missing after the events of Season 4. Regardless of what does or doesn’t happen with certain characters, I’m honestly glad Kali is back in the fold and look forward to seeing how her story is wrapped up.

Although Levy didn’t drop spoilers during his chat with McCarthy, he did spill that one particular film from the Original Trilogy really inspired his approach to his own movie:

Earlier in the interview, the Free Guy director named the question-inducing Return of the Jedi as his favorite film in the saga. Historically, Jedi hasn’t been as highly regarded as its two predecessors – Star Wars (now subtitled A New Hope) and The Empire Strikes Back. Some argue Richard Marquand’s 1983 film is too silly compared to its predecessors, especially the dark and thematic Empire. Even filmmaker Denis Villeneuve argues the threequel “derailed” the franchise upon its release.

No criticisms seem to be extinguishing Shawn Levy’s love for Jedi, though. How sweet is that? Clearly there's a ton of love between these two, who have worked together on a variety of projects including Free Guy, The Adam Project, and (of course) Deadpool 3. The latter is represented in the photo dump's second and fifth images, which show them working on set. We see Levy and Reynolds giggling at the TVA headquarters, as well as a shot of the actor in a battle-ravaged version of Wade Wilson's costume. Somehow, it's been six years since the last big-screen Star Wars movie came out, and fans have been missing the franchise. The first round of comments show a lot of excitement from what's to come from Starfighter as Gosling and Gray sitting down on what looks to be a practically-made small vessel. The movie will be a completely new story for the franchise unconnected to the Skywalkers, and ready for this new era.

What We Know About The Star Wars: Starfighter Cast

In addition to this first image, the official casting landed on Star Wars, and there's some big names on the list that we had no idea were part of the film, including Flynn Gray. Perhaps the biggest get here is Amy Adams, but Rebel Ridge's Aaron Pierre is also an exciting add as well. It was also confirmed that Doctor Who's Matt Smith and Mia Goth are in the cast after previous reports. Rumor has it Smith is playing the movie's villain and Goth will be one of the "pursuers" of Flynn's character who Gosling's character becomes the protector of.

Not only that, but he's also been a fan since childhood, with his mother even saving his Empire Strikes Back bedsheets as evidence.

It’s clear that Shawn Levy believes Ryan Gosling will bring a great deal of gravitas to Starfighter. That makes me all the more curious about what his character will be like. Not only does Levy feel he and Gosling will have a magical collaboration, but he loves the “idea of pairing” the talented actor and Star Wars in general:

After filming wrapped up in December, that means the cast and crew know the fates of the beloved characters and how everything will go down in the 2025 Netflix release. After director Shawn Levy got real about the final day of filming being “more emotional than you’ve heard,” now I have a whole bunch of questions.

Shawn Levy’s Comments About the Final Day of Shooting

Just when we were prepared to handle the emotional rollercoaster that season five was destined to bring Netflix subscribers, the 2023 WGA Writers Strike halted production. Once the strike was settled in November 2023, Stranger Things officially went into production at the beginning of 2024 and ended in December. Now that filming is all over, director Shawn Levy spoke to THR about how the final day of shooting was “more emotional than you’ve heard:”

I can imagine how bittersweet it must be for Shawn Levy. After all, all good things come to an end. It’s understandable for him to be happy that the long, grueling schedule of filming all of those epic scenes is done. It’s like training hard to run a marathon, and you’re so happy when the race is finally over.

Shawn Levy is probably right that we only get one Stranger Things in our lives. I feel lucky as a fan that I can say I saw the Netflix series premiere in July og 2016. It was a cultural phenomenon that only continued growing season after season. Even with the animated spinoff coming to the streamer and the “flawless” West End stage adaptation, the series that started it all will always be one of a kind.

What Did They Film On Stranger Things' Final Day?

My mind is officially racing with all of these questions on what could have been filmed that day. Was filming “more emotional” just because it was the last day of shooting, or what was being shot? Was it a happy scene? Or a character death scene that will stay in our minds rent-free? What was filmed that day?! Now my patience is running thin for the new season to come.

The Canadian director wasn’t the only one to talk about the last day of shooting. David Harbour said he refused to talk about whether what he filmed was “happy or sad,” but that he shot a “moving” scene that will be “satisfying.” Finn Wolfhard compared his final day of filming to Toy Story 3 of leaving behind your childhood and having an “emotional hangover.” Meanwhile, Millie Bobby Brown burst into tears on the final day because how can you not? Based on the cast’s overwhelming emotions on the last day of shooting, I have a feeling that Stranger Things will end on a bittersweet note where some tragedy could occur by going against a powerful baddie like Vecna, but also some beautiful moments that will tie up character fates.

As the final filming of Stranger Things was “more emotional” for the cast and crew, I don’t even have to imagine what it’ll be like for the fans watching. It’s important to remember that the last day of filming doesn’t mean they were filming the show’s final scene, as scenes are shot out of order. So, the emotional weight of the cast and crew could come from the journey compared to the specific content shot. I guess until season five releases, we won’t know what that “emotional” final scene shot was, but I can’t wait to find out.

Let’s go over today’s news first. Per THR, Gosling is in negotiations to star in Shawn Levy’s untitled Star Wars movie. The Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker has been attached to make this own theatrical installment for the franchise since late 2022, and his This is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project collaborator Jonathan Tropper is writing the script. No plot details have been divulged other than whatever Levy and Tropper are cooking up will not be tied to the Skywalker Saga.

Gosling’s potential involvement in this Star Wars project is described in the article as “a late-in-the-game move for Levy’s movie schedule” because he was originally next set to make that boy band movie that’s reuniting him with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Instead, if Gosling signs on, Levy will prioritize this instead, making it the first Star Wars movie to enter production after The Mandalorian & Grogu. It’s also mentioned that will be a “rare occasion” where an A-list actor is brought aboard, with one of the few other examples of this being when Liam Neeson played Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace.

This will mark Ryan Gosling’s second big dive into the science fiction genre, having previously played Officer K in Blade Runner 2049. Wherever the movie ends up falling in the timeline of Star Wars movies in order, be it set in the days of the Old Republic, far after the events of the Skywalker Saga concluded, or somewhere in-between, you can be sure that a lot of people will be psyched to see Gosling lend his talents to the franchise. But as I mentioned earlier, it would be great if Emily Blunt could share more screen time with Gosling in this Star Wars movie.

Although The Fall Guy failed to make a splash at the box office last year, the David Leitch-directed blockbuster earned a lot of positive critical reception, and it ranks as one of Ryan Gosling’s best movies. It would have been great for he and Emily Blunt to reunite in a sequel, it’s doubtful that will happen given how much the first movie underperformed commercially. So instead, Shawn Levy should recruit Emily Blunt for his Star Wars movie, too. Obviously the first choice would be for them to be co-leads again, as their chemistry in The Fall Guy was one of my favorite parts of the movie. But if for whatever reason Blunt doesn’t have that much room in her schedule, then fit her into a minor role or even just a cameo. Just give me more time with these two together!

By December, it was reported that the film – called Boy Band – would reunite him with Levy and that Jackman was in negotiations to join. I can’t help but smile knowing that Jackman and Levy enjoy working with Reynolds. As for anyone else who might work with him, they may want to keep the trailer tidbit and the other points in mind.

A new year always reminds us that time is always passing. Of course, movies can do the same thing, as they are snapshots of a moment in time. They can help us remember actors who have passed away, or show us what actors looked like when they got their start, and it even works for actors who are still fairly young. Somehow Ryan Reynolds co-star in The Adam Project is already 16 years old.

Most people may know Walker Scobell as the lead in Percy Jackson and the Olympians (which is streaming with a Disney+ subscription). It’s hard to believe that his first movie ever hit Netflix less than three years ago with The Adam Project. It was the second movie that paired Ryan Reynolds with director Shawn Levy, and both the star and the director made a point to wish Scobell a happy birthday yesterday when the kid turned 16. Reynolds wrote on Instagram…

While critics were mostly positive of The Adam Project when it was released in 2022, and our own The Adam Project review gave the film a solid 3.5 stars, I'm not sure the streaming film would make most people's list of best Ryan Reynolds movies. So you'd be forgiven if this one hasn't come up a ton in your mind, but it's still pretty wild four years have passed since the movie, which saw Reynolds as a time-traveler who accidentally crashed in 2022 and teams up with his 12-year-old self in a mission to help save the future, came out.

The movie was filmed four years ago, meaning Scobell was all of 12 when he made his debut. It was produced under COVID protocols. It wouldn't be a shock if the entire process likely took longer than originally expected as it seems clear to me Scobell has aged a great deal more between then and now than I would have expected.

Shawn Levy also wished the young actor a happy birthday on Instagram. Take a look:

Both Reynolds and Levy remark on Walker Scobell’s being grounded despite is near instant stardom, as well as his talent. They are certainly not the only ones to notice the talent, considering that Scobell all three projects the actor has been in have been high-profile ventures. In addition to The Adam Project he starred in the movie Secret Headquarters with Own Wilson, before going on to play the title role in Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Percy Jackson was such a big hit that Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 is on the way on Disney+. If the series is able to last as long as the books then we’ll likely be watching Walker Scobell and his co-stars age before our eyes in much the same way we did the cast of the Harry Potter movies. Doesn't make it any easierm however.

Deadpool & Wolverine, like all Deadpool movies before it, is full of jokes at the expense of just about everything and everybody. Deadpool pokes fun at his old masters at Fox, his new masters at Disney, and whatever else comes along. But if any joke broke the fourth wall a little too hard, it may have been a crack about Hugh Jackman’s real-life divorce.

In September 2023 it was revealed that Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness would be divorcing after nearly three decades of marriage. Considering that Jackman and Furness’ marriage was seen as especially stable previously, it was headline news. But it’s not something either party has spoken much about. However, speaking to Wicked director Jon M. Chu for Variety, Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy assures us that Jackman was ok with a joke about getting divorced in the film. Levy said…

The crack about Jackman’s divorce isn’t the only joke at the expense of the man rather than his character. Still, it is certainly the most personal, and considering how close Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are, it certainly would have only taken a word from Hugh to kill the joke if he wasn’t comfortable with it.

Of course, the joke actually now has taken on a great deal more weight than it had when it was first uttered. Since the release of Deadpool & Wolverine (which is streaming now with a Disney+ subscription), it’s come out that Hugh Jackman is now in a relationship with Sutton Foster, his co-star fromThe Music Man on Broadway. The relationship reportedly started while the show was happening and both stars were still married. Deadpool & Wolverine also includes a joke about Logan performing The Music Man.

Chu noted that the way the joke is shot, we don’t see Hugh Jackman’s face, so we don’t see how or if Logan reacts at all to the divorce joke. This, as Levy points out, is largely by design as the idea is that when Deadpool breaks the fourth wall, the audience hears him, but nobody else does.

Jackman was ok with jokes about his divorce, and it sounds like everybody else was ok with nearly everything that was said. We've only heard about one joke in Deadpool & Wolverine that was asked to be cut by Disney.

It’s interesting to see that Hugh Jackman tried to have Wolverine talk to the camera as well. That certainly would have made for an interesting movie, and likely more than a few cracks about Ryan Reynolds to balance the score.

Now that Deadpool & Wolverine is available on home media and streamable with a Disney+ subscription, one can pause the 34th of the Marvel movies in order to their heart’s content and really take in its many Easter eggs. However, if you’re among the few who thought they spotted a subtle shoutout to Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World, a movie Russell Crowe has no problem defending, I regret to inform you that this particular Easter egg has been debunked. Not to worry though, as even Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy thought it was legit.

Here’s the deal: there are a lot of objects and set pieces from past Marvel movies, both MCU-related and ones from then-20th Century Fox, that are scattered throughout The Void when Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and Hugh Jackman’s Logan are adventuring through it. Additionally, there’s a colonial ship in the background for one scene, and some theorized that this was the same ship from Master & Commander, another Fox production. Shawn Levy thought this was indeed the case when he appeared on Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast, saying:

At the time, Levy assumed this was an Easter egg Deadpool & Wolverine’s visual effects team came up with, but after the interview, the director checked with the VFX department and learned that this ship wasn’t a Master & Commander callback after all. He wrote in a follow-up email:

If Shawn Levy could be fooled, then hats off to the VFX department for their work customizing that generic ship. Alas, now Deadpool & Wolverine is officially lacking in any Master & Commander representation… not that this detracts from the movie’s quality at all, it just would have been a fun nod to a non-Marvel Fox cinematic offering from way back when. Back during the aforementioned EW interview, Ryan Reynolds also mentioned that one of history’s most famous ships was also considered for dropping into The Void:

The Titanic also would have been interesting to see, although given that the aforementioned ship is just barely seen, I don’t blame Deadpool & Wolverine’s VFX department for just tweaking a default ship that was available to them. And while things didn’t work out with Master & Commander in the threequel, this makes me wish even more that the 2003 flick was available for streaming. Seriously, let’s make this available for those with a Hulu subscription to load up!

Now that Deadpool & Wolverine has played to the masses and become both the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time and the second highest-grossing of the 2024 movie releases, next up on the upcoming Marvel movies slate is Captain America: Brave New World, which comes out on February 14, 2025. In 2011, filmmaker Shawn Levy and Hugh Jackman collaborated for Real Steel, and the former went on to work with Ryan Reynolds years later on Free Guy and The Adam Project. This year, however, finally brought all three men together thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine, the 34th of the Marvel movies in order. While it remains to be seen if Deadpool 4 will one day be added to the slate of upcoming Marvel movies and reunite the trio, word’s come in about a different team-up between Levy, Jackman and Reynolds that has me almost as excited.

During his appearance on an episode of Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, mentioned that he’s going to be spending 2025 writing a non-Marvel project that will involve Levy and Jackman’s participation. In his words:

Ryan Reynolds didn’t specify if this is a movie that has already been greenlit by a studio or if it’s something he’s crafting on his own that will be pitched at a later date. You also may recall that in February 2023, it was reported that Reynolds was working on a boy band reunion comedy that Levy would produce, and that was followed in December by word Levy being tapped to direct Reynolds in an international heist comedy for Netflix. Is it possible what Reynolds is teasing is one of these previously-revealed projects, and now Hugh Jackman has come aboard?

It may be a while until that information is disclosed to the public, but considering how well Deadpool & Wolverine has performed, I’m surely not alone in, at the very least, being intrigued by what these three men can do together in a non-Marvel setting, while still hoping they can all come back for a hypothetical Deadpool 4. The threequel was met with largely positive critical reception, including our own Eric Eisenberg giving it 3.5 out of 5 stars in his Deadpool & Wolverine review. In an even bigger display of success, Deadpool 3 has made over $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest grossing movie on the 2024 release schedule, trailing only behind Inside Out 2.

Even if Deadpool 4 isn’t on the table, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve seen the last of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman playing Wade Wilson and Logan, respectively. After all, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will climactically bring The Multiverse Saga to a close, meaning various characters from other corners of the Marvel multiverse will likely appear. Maybe that could include Deadpool and Wolverine, but if that’s not a possibility either, at last there’s this mystery movie to look forward to between them and Shawn Levy.

Deadpool & Wolverine is available to buy digitally and on physical media now, and it will be streamable with a Disney+ subscription starting on November 12. Once specific details about the untitled movie Ryan Reynolds is writing come to light, we’ll pass them along.

Remember back in July 2023 when Ryan Reynolds broke the internet by sharing the first Deadpool & Wolverine on-set photos revealing Hugh Jackman finally rocking Wolverine’s yellow suit? Nearly a year before the blood-soaked and Easter egg-filled adventure hit the 2024 movie schedule, the actor spilled the beans on the long-awaited debut of the comic book-accurate costume – and the motivation behind the image's release was pretty much a way to stick it to prying eyes on set.

In the commentary track on the Deadpool & Wolverine home release, Reynolds and director Shawn Levy take a minute to talk about shooting at the Pitstone Quarry in England and the challenges that it presented – including paparazzi hiding out on a ridge who wanted to make a quick buck off a behind-the-scenes photo. Not wanting someone else to spoil things for one of the best Marvel movies., Reynolds took matters into his own hands. He says,

Shawn Levy, speaking with less Deadpool-like language than his fellow producer/the film’s main star, added that sometimes you have to be flexible, even if it means revealing something that probably wasn’t ready to be revealed:

The first look image, which showed up on Reynolds’ Instagram stories and was shared by countless outlets, blogs, and social media users in the hours and days that followed, ended up driving more interest in the film and gave fans even more to look forward to from the then-upcoming Marvel movie.

At the time the first look image was released, we already knew what some of the biggest Deadpool & Wolverine cameos would be, but Reynolds, Levy, and the powers that be at Marvel Studios were able to keep some secrets hidden from prying eyes until the film’s eventual and monumental big-screen debut. And when they couldn’t protect spoilers, even when Reynolds came up with some hilarious search ideas, they found a way to spill the beans on their own terms, which is admirable.

But this isn’t the only great story from the Deadpool & Wolverine commentary, as Reynolds and Levy open up about everything from that great Happy Hogan scene to the surprisingly emotional end credits sequence and so much more.

Deadpool & Wolverine is now available on Digital, and will be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 22.

Unfortunately, Stranger Things' final season won’t be making the 2024 TV schedule, but the good news is that production is in full swing. What's known about ST Season 5 remains limited, but series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have been gracious in sharing a handful of behind-the-scenes photos to commemorate weeks of filming. Fellow EP Shawn Levy has since shared BTS pics himself. But, now, one of the images from his latest batch has me worried.

Shawn Levy took to Instagram to share a number of photos from production on the final season of the hit Netflix show. They show him and the cast taking in the excitement, but my eye is drawn to one tidbit that links to the first season:

The photo in question shows The Duffer Brothers alongside Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp and an unidentified, presumed crew member. Neither Wolfhard nor Schnapp seem to be in costume, so this is likely them chatting with the show’s creators on their off time, which isn’t anything to write home about. What is interesting, though, is the set piece in the background that’s unmistakably the alphabet wall Joyce Byers created in her living room during Season 1.

Now, I’m sure there’s a reasonable reason why a set piece from Season 1 is still around, but since that reason wasn’t given, I have free reign to speculate After all, if Stranger Things has taught me anything, it’s to question everything!

Is Someone Stuck In The Upside Down Again?

Upon seeing the iconic set piece, my mind immediately went to the possibility that Will or someone else might be stuck in the Upside Down this season. Perhaps it’ll be Eddie Munson, who some fans are convinced isn’t really dead.

However, given how Season 4 ended, it’s unlikely that anyone is going to get stuck in the Upside Down, but rather, they’re going to be down there searching for the villianous Vecna. It’s more likely, then, that Joyce might've managed to move back into her home in Hawkins to recreate the wall to make it easier to communicate with whichever characters decide to explore the alternate dimension.

Could It Be A Hint That We're Getting Flashbacks Or A Total Reset Of Events?

One popular Stranger Things fan theory regarding Season 5 is that the characters are going to be messing with time. Whether that be through flashbacks, time travel, or a total reset to the events of the first season remains to be seen.

Since there weren't many scenes with Will in the Upside Down in that first season, it’s possible that the Duffer Brothers are planning to shoot some flashbacks with a younger Byers, as they did with Eleven’s character in Season 4. It would make sense, then, to include more scenes of Joyce trying to communicate with her son via the wall.

There’s also the possibility that the return of the wall signifies that Season 5 could end with a partial reset to the events from the start. Perhaps Will manages to break through the wall and run to his mom instead of running deeper into the Upside Down. It sounds wild, but it's not impossible.

Is This Just A Leftover Set Piece?

The least exciting hypothetical is that the wall is a leftover, standing set that the crews never tore down because of how iconic it is. However, it would be a little weird to still have a set piece from Season 1 hanging around the sound stage of an active set when the characters don’t even live in that house anymore. After all, sound stages are massive, but keeping sets you aren’t going to use is a waste of valuable space.

Unfortunately, Shawn Levy never addresses why the wall appears in his post and, judging by the comments, fans don’t seem to be focused on it either. Hopefully, for those of us who are curious, we’ll get answers when Season 5 eventually makes its way to Netflix — hopefully as part of the 2025 TV Schedule. Until then, you can stream the first four seasons of the show with an active Netflix subscription.

Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the biggest movies on the 2024 movie schedule, and in the entirety of the MCU movie timeline, and the film’s box office has been incredible. Clearly, when you put Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and director Shawn Levy together, you get something special, but the same can be true even if Ryan Reynolds isn't directly involved. Over the weekend Real Steel reached a big anniversary, and Levy celebrated with some excellent throwback pics.

The sequel Deadpool and Wolverine marked the third time that Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds have worked together, and it was also the second outing for Levy and Jackman. 13 years ago, the pair teamed up for Real Steel, and if you can’t believe it’s been that long, just look at how young everybody looks in these pictures posted by Shawn Levy on Instagram.

Real Steel starred Hugh Jackman as an ex-boxer who gets involved in the world of professional robot boxing, ultimately teaming up with the son he’s never known to try and build a champion. The Instagram post from Levy shows what both he and Jackman looked like before the stress of the publicity tour for D&W, which I guess only felt like it lasted a decade.

We also get some shots of boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard, who helped teach Jackman the moves he would need to portray a boxer believably on screen.

Real Steel wasn’t necessarily a massive hit when it was released 13 years ago, but both the critical response and the box office were respectable. The movie made $300 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $110 million. The film has since picked up many fans over the years as people have discovered it on streaming. Back in 2020, Real Steel made a splash on Netflix, but as of this writing, is available with a Hulu subscription.

While it’s difficult to know just how popular Real Steel is today, there are certainly those who would love to see a sequel. Shawn Levy has indicated that Real Steel 2 is something that might still happen even though it’s been nearly a decade and a half since the original film. A couple of years ago it appeared a Real Steel series for Disney+ was on the horizon, but we haven't heard much about it recently.

Having said that, Shawn Levy just directed the most successful live-action movie of the year for Disney, so if he wants to talk to them about doing a Real Steel sequel since Disney owns the IP after it purchased Fox, it seems like the director would have some pretty strong bargaining power.

Considering that Levy’s post has a quarter of a million likes, far more than what most of his IG posts see, there’s clearly a devoted fanbase for Real Steel. Perhaps Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy spent time talking about a sequel while on the set of Deadpool & Wolverine. If they could find a role for Ryan Reynolds I bet any studio would green-light that project right now.

Levy spoke with The Ankler about concerns he was being pigeonholed in his career with family-friendly content. And when asked if he thinks he's finally achieved a full rounded career with an R-rated MCU blockbuster like Deadpool 3, Levy said:

These concerns, as well as the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, likely mean a great deal to the producer/writer/director. As recently as this summer, he was referred to as "Hollywood's PG Guy" in a recent story by THR. But his movie with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is anything but family friendly. Although Kevin Feige's review did call it "the most wholesome R-rated film that anybody can ever see."

Still, Deadpool & Wolverine had a lot of edge to it, and a ton of F-bombs throughout its runtime. Case in point: the opening battle sees Wade Wilson use the adamantium skeleton of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine as a weapon, brutally murdering members of the Time Variance Authority.

Shawn Levy has definitely done his share of family friendly content, including titles like Big Fat Liar, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Night at the Museum. But he's also worked on darker material with This Is Where I Leave You, as well as Stranger Things. And his work on Deadpool & Wolverine has shown that he can do comic book projects and has an R-rated sensibility.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's faux feud was on display for Deadpool & Wolverine, which is another reason the movie resonated so much with audiences. And smart money says that Kevin Feige and company are going to continue wanting to work with Levy, Jackman, and Reynolds, especially after recent MCU box office bombs like The Marvels.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to be wildly popular, thanks to projects released in theaters and streaming with a Disney+ subscription. The most recent movie to arrive is Shawn Levy's Deadpool & Wolverine, which broke records at the box office. The movie featured plenty of exciting MCU cameos, but they weren't included just for kicks. And it turns out that Levy does not really enjoy when people act like Deadpool 3 cameos were for "shock and awe" only. Let's break it down.

The cast of Deadpool & Wolverine ended up including a number of surprise characters, mostly from 20th Century Fox's properties like X-Men, Blade, Fantastic Four, and Daredevil. Each of these appearances made an impact, including Channing Tatum's Gambit. During a recent conversation with The New York Times, Levy explained his approach to the cameos, saying:

Points were made. There was a deep pool of characters to pull from for Deadpool & Wolverine, particularly given how long the X-Men movies ran in theaters. But Levy was going for quality not quantity, and wanted to honor the legacy of a handful of names from before 20th Century Fox's acquisition by Disney.

Fans spent years watching the Marvel movies in order, but those same moviegoers likely also watched the superhero projects that preceded it. And in addition to bringing back characters for one more fight in The Void, Deadpool 3's credits also paid tribute to the various individuals who made those Fox superhero movies possible. Later in that interview, Shawn Levy further explained how they assembled the motley crew of resisters to Cassandra Nova. In his words:

In the end it really did feel like Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds assembled the right amount of legacy characters for Deadpool 3. Fans were also treated to Chris Evans' return as the Human Torch... even if he didn't last very long.

While saw variants of some other X-Men villains in Deadpool & Wolverine, they didn't really take center stage. Although it was fun to see them fight the good guys in the epic battle at Cassandra Nova's compound (aka a dead Ant-Man).

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a well-oiled machine, one constantly offering new content in theaters and streaming with a Disney+ subscription. The latest movie release is Deadpool & Wolverine, which has been wildly successful in theaters. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's faux feud shines in the movie, with the pair of actors trading barbs and blows throughout its runtime. And director Shawn Levy just confirmed a funny easter egg poking fun at Jackman.

Deadpool 3 broke records at the box office, and more information and easter eggs are still being spotted weeks after its release. The franchise is known for its R-rated comedy, and concerns about the threequel ruining Logan's ending were addressed head-on when Deadpool used Wolverine's adamantium bones as weapons. It turns out that opening sequence also featured jokes about Jackman's role in Les Miserables. As Levy confirmed on Twitter:

I kinda love this. As both a musical theater nerd and comic book fan, this is really where my interests meet. it's always fun to see how Reynolds and Jackman poke fun at each other, and it turns out that they included some jokes that you could miss simply by blinking. Case in point: the number 24601.

In Les Miserables, 24601 is the prisoner number assigned to protagonist Jean Valjean, whom Hugh Jackman played in the 2012 movie adaptation of the stage show. And that number has already become a running joke in the Deadpool franchise, starting with a doodle in the sequel and etched into the skull of Wolverine in the latest entry. Someone cue the Les Miz soundtrack!

The way Reynolds and Jackman are able to constantly throw so much shade at each other is part of why their chemistry was electric in Deadpool & Wolverine. It made sense for their characters, who eventually realized their shared connection by the end of the movie. And it should be fascinating to see what jokes come next in upcoming Marvel movies.

Given just how well Deadpool 3 performed critically and financially, fans are expecting Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman to return for more appearances together in the MCU. The movie's success stands in stark juxtaposition to recent box office bombs like Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, as well as movies fans didn't connect with like Eternals and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Exactly if/when Jackman and Reynolds return to the MCU remains a mystery for the time being, but some fans are keeping their fingers crossed for Avengers: Doomsday, which will be the next major crossover event for the shared universe. But with that blockbuster still in development, we'll have to wait and see how things shake out.

As the wait continues for when Stranger Things Season 5 will finally be ready for fans with Netflix subscriptions, we can at least appreciate behind-the-scenes updates as they come along. The cast is clearly still filming, and now Shawn Levy has shared some good news. The executive producer is back on set, presumably to direct another episode or two. He shared some behind-the-scenes photos of the stars, which include a very scruffy David Harbour, a surprising pairing, and enough clues to restart my speculation about the size of the time jump. Let's jump in!

What Shawn Levy's First Photos Could Mean

Like The Duffer Brothers with previous peeks behind the scenes, Shawn Levy dropped a bunch of photos on Instagram. Fortunately, he also tagged who was in the photos, which was the only way that I even knew for sure that the scruffy person he’s talking to in one of them is David Harbour. There’s also a shot of Finn Wolfhard and Maya Hawke together, which could be a sign that Mike and Robin are teaming up in Season 5. Take a look:

Based on the length of David Harbour’s hair, beard, and overall unkempt look in the second of Levy’s photos, I’m starting to think all over again about just how big the time jump could be between the fourth and fifth seasons. I’ve been speculating ever since a previous set of photos from Ross Duffer showed Lucas’ watch set to a certain date that the jump would be several years ahead to November 1989.

A time jump that large could help account for how much older the young actors look by this point, which not even the talented costume department can hide. Plus, Finn Wolfhard and Maya Hawke are both wearing pants and long sleeves in the shot of them together, which could point towards the story going down in an Indiana November.

On a lighter and less speculative note, I do get a kick out of Lucas keeping his iconic haircut from Season 4 throughout however long the time jump is, because that silhouette is clearly his even without seeing that Shawn Levy tagged Caleb McLaughlin. And as it happens, Instagram isn’t the only place that Levy posted some pictures, and his set on X (formerly known as Twitter) includes a bonus.

Three of the four photos that Shawn Levy shared on X are the same as what he posted on the other social media platform, but the second one with Finn Wolfhard is different. While it’s nice to see the two smiling together since the characters might not have a lot to smile about in Season 5, I’m more interested in the background. Check it out:

Based on the curtains, blanket, and boards of the setting for the photo of Wolfhard and Levy, the fifth season is evidently filming in Hopper’s cabin again, and it looks a lot better than it did when it was a total mess at the end of Season 4 due to months without anybody cleaning up from the Mind Flayer’s attack.

However much time has passed between seasons, Hopper and Eleven’s home seems to be fixed up. Based on photos from Millie Bobby Brown, Eleven’s hair has also had time to grow out from how it was shaved in Season 4.

What We Know For Sure

Of course, in light of all of this speculation, it’s worth considering what we actually know for sure about the fifth and final season. One thing we unfortunately don’t know with certainty is when the episodes will be ready to release on Netflix, but the aim is reportedly for at some point in 2025. Depending on when in 2025, fans may have been waiting more than three years to learn the aftermath of the Season 4, Volume 2 ending.

Although filming on the fifth season’s eight episodes was said to be halfway done back in mid-July, Shawn Levy has directed the third and fourth episode of every season going back to the very first. If that’s the case again for Season 5, then it seems like a safe bet that a lot of the filming has been out of order.

Sadie Sink will be back, so Max’s story isn’t over despite being left comatose at the end of the fourth season with Eleven unable to reach her. If there has been a time jump of several years, I’d be particularly curious to know how those years affected Max. If her consciousness is somehow stuck with Vecna, then I imagine her mind could be in as bad of shape as her body after her grievous injuries.

Linda Hamilton has also joined the cast for the fifth season, and it’s really only fitting that an ‘80s icon like the Terminator star makes an appearance before the end. Previous ‘80s icons with Stranger Things roles include The Goonies’ Sean Astin, A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Robert Englund, The Princess Bride’s Cary Elwes, and of course the legendary Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers.

Netflix also intends to continue releasing multiple episodes at once for the binge-watching pleasure of fans, although I for one wouldn’t mind if the streamer splits the final season into two parts that release weeks apart again. Sure, the wait for Season 4B was rough after getting to watch the first seven episodes ASAP, but I enjoyed getting to talk and speculate with other fans over the break, secure in the knowledge that it wouldn’t be another couple years before the next episodes.

Releasing seasons in two parts is far from universally popular, however, as reactions to Bridgerton’s Season 3 split weren’t all positive. For now, we can only wait for news and continue our speculation about the next batch of episodes set in Hawkins, Indiana. While some early footage points towards the youngest main characters still being in high school, I’m going to hold onto my theory of a multi-year time jump until/unless I’m proved wrong.

The latest Marvel blockbuster, Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine immediately took the box office by storm, becoming one of the latest 2024 movie schedule entries to hit $1 billion with a mix of irreverent humor, thrilling action, and some genuinely unexpected cameos. Ryan Reynold's unique collaboration with Levy was a big creative hook that helped the movie dazzle with its fun and frenetic pace, and it also led to one of the film's most surprising moments, which took a tremendous amount of behind-the-scenes effort to bring to life.

In an interview with The New York Times, Shawn Levy discussed the challenges of creating that special end-credits tribute honoring the legacy of 20th Century Fox’s Marvel films. This montage wasn’t just a typical highlight reel but a heartfelt tribute to the studio’s history and the actors who brought these iconic characters to life. Levy shared that securing the rights and permissions for the clips was a surprisingly difficult process, taking several months to complete. When asked about the actors' reactions to being included in the tribute, the Free Guy helmer explained:

The Adam Project filmmaker’s comments highlight the complexity and dedication involved in crafting the surprisingly beautiful tribute. Each clip in the montage had to be carefully selected to reflect not just the highs of Fox's Marvel history but also the full spectrum, including less successful films. Notably, there wasn’t so much as a nod to the Fantastic Four Reboot, which Reynolds has spoken about.

The goal was to create a comprehensive tribute that was inclusive of all the films, regardless of their critical or commercial reception. The effort behind this tribute underscores the film's broader theme of legacy, which was significantly shaped by Hugh Jackman’s involvement, returning as everyone's favorite adamantium clawed Logan.

\Jackman’s return helped solidify the narrative direction of Deadpool & Wolverine, prompting Levy and Reynolds to dig deeper into themes of legacy and character evolution. This thematic depth is mirrored in the film’s many cameos, easter eggs, and references, which include Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade, and Chris Evans reprising his role as Johnny Storm.

Deadpool & Wolverine struck the box office like a bolt of lightning upon its opening weekend weeks ago, and it’s kept up that momentum since then. It’s already become one of the latest 2024 movie schedule entries to hit $1 billion globally, and it recently secured another record as well. As it stands, the Marvel Studios production is now the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time. Todd Phillips’ Joker previously held that title and, upon his movie being usurped, the filmmaker responded with a kind message. Additionally, fans shared plenty of comments about the upcoming sequel to Phillips’ DC Comics film.

News of D&W’s new record dropped this weekend and, needless to say, it marks a major moment amid the film’s theatrical run. Upon seeing the news, Todd Phillips took to Instagram to react. The Hangover director not only shared a screenshot of a headline bearing the news, but he also dropped a funny photo of Deadpool dancing on the iconic Joker steps. In addition, Philips expressed his awe over the accomplishment via the following message:

It was certainly sweet of the Old School filmmaker to give that shoutout. Also, I’m curious as to where he acquired that photo of Wade Wilson dancing on the steps. (Now, I kind of want to see that sequence on the big screen). But, the picture aside, what makes this post particularly sweet is that Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy spotted it and shared a lovely reply:

Based on the exchange, this definitely seems to be a case of “game recognizes game,” if you ask me. And Shawn Levy is far from the only person who seems to be excited for the forthcoming Joker: Folie à Deux. A plethora of fans took to the comments of the Due Date director’s post to hype up the upcoming DC movie. If anything, it sounds like they’re confident that the movie will retake the title that the Oscar-winning first entry in the Joaquin Phoenix-led franchise just lost. Take a look:

It’d be fair to say that Todd Phillips’ latest film does have a chance at taking back the title. 2019’s Joker conjured up a serious storm at the box office, finishing its theatrical run with $1.079 billion globally. At the time, the psychological thriller became the first R-rated film to accomplish such a feat. One could argue that there’s even more hype surrounding the new movie, as the Folie à Deux trailer has many transfixed by the big musical numbers and spectacle. Adding to the anticipation is the fact that Lady Gaga was added to the Joker 2 cast as Harley Quinn.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman can certainly draw audiences to the theaters, but I’d imagine that Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga will have no trouble doing that this fall as well. Regardless of whether Todd Phillips’ sequel manages to earn Deadpool & Wolverine’s newly achieved title, I’m just glad to see that there’s such respect between Philips and Shawn Levy.

Of all the upcoming Marvel movies that we'd been expecting for years, few have been as anticipated as the one we just got. Deadpool & Wolverine already hit $1 billion and is now one of the biggest movies of the year. Audiences love it, and that love extends to the people who made the film, who are quite proud of their work. Hugh Jackman recently dropped a video showing the moments after he had seen the film for the first time, and it’s quite something to see.

The actor has been continually blown away by the movie. We saw Jackman's reaction to seeing just one fight scene, but his reaction to the whole movie is something else. In the video posted to Instagram, we see Jackman and director Shawn Levy in a screening room, immediately following what appears to be the actor's first time seeing the completed movie. Jackman is almost speechless, clearly thrilled with what he has just seen. He has trouble saying anything, beyond calling the film “Heroin in your eyeballs” which is quite the metaphor. Director Shawn Levy is just as excited. He’s very obviously thrilled that Jackman likes the final product. At this moment, likely some time before the film was released, all a director can hope for is that the people who made the movie with him are happy with his work. Rest assured, Jackman is certainly thrilled.

Hugh Jackman says he wants to see the movie with an audience, because he knows, in this moment, they’ll love what they see. The box office results certainly bear that out. The film has been number one at the domestic box office for three weekends in a row, a feat only matched this year by Inside Out 2, the only movie of 2024 to have a bigger global box office take, both movies have crossed the billion-dollar mark.

Deadpool & Wolverine is full of action and mature humor, just like fans expect. It gave fans many of the Marvel cameos that had been rumored for years. The movie was also full of a surprising amount of heart, acting as a sort of finale for the entire Fox/Marvel era via the post-credits. Considering how important Hugh Jackman was to that, a fact that was literally part of the plot of the new movie, it surely meant a lot to him. We're still not sure if we're truly saying goodbye to Wolverine (again) but if we are, this wasn't a terrible way to go.

Following a look at the end of the process, Jackman posted a short video of where he was at the beginning of Deadpool & Wolverine. It’s certainly interesting to contrast these two moments and think about everything that happened in between.

On his first day of filming, he says he knew he was about to go on the ride of his life. Based on the way he looked at the end, I’m not sure he really had any idea just what this experience would mean.

Those fans who have spent years watching the Marvel movies in order have seen a few missteps, but the MCU is back on top. Deadpool & Wolverine broke records when it was released at the box office, and has been a hit with critics and audiences alike. While folks are waiting to see when they'll be able to stream the blockbuster with a Disney+ subscription, more information and hidden easter eggs from Deadpool 3 are being revealed. Case in point: director Shawn Levy showed off a fun Marvel easter egg in, but I'm more in my feels over him talking about that last shot.

Prior to its release, Deadpool & Wolverine was the most highly anticipated upcoming Marvel movie in years. It really delivered upon hitting theaters, with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's faux feud on full display. Deadpool 3's credits offered a tribute to 20th Century Fox, but it appears that the final shots of the film itself are what Levy is proud of. He shared an Instagram post revealing a fun easter egg from the final scene in Wade's apartment, along with an emotional message. As he put it:

How fun is that? The cast of Deadpool 3 was eating pizza and getting their happy ending in the final scene, after the multiverse was saved by Wade and Logan. It turns out that the pizza box referenced Kevin Feige by name, which is yet another fun easter egg that Levy and company included in the movie. After all, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld got his own tongue-in-cheek shop during the epic battle against the Deadpool Corps. And while the threeuel is full of jokes, Levy clearly cares a great deal about the movie... including its ending. I'm not crying, you're crying.

Of course, the real emotional message of this post is about how proud Shawn Levy is of Deadpool & Wolverine's final shot. After seeing Wade and his friends (plus Logan and X-23) relaxed and eating pizza as one big happy family, the camera pans to Deadpool and Wolverine's masks on display. The relationship between those two characters is the crux of the movie (and its title), so the shot of their masks is a fitting end. And it's something that Levy is super proud of.

Given how huge Deadpool 3 has been, fans are wondering if Shawn Levy will be back to direct another installment in the MCU. What's more, those same fans are expecting Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds to appear again in a future project like Avengers: Doomsday. As always, the studio is keeping its plans close to the chest for now, but it seems logical that Levy, Jackman, and Reynolds are all going to be major factors into the MCU.

Deadpool & Wolverine is in theaters now, and Captain America: Brave New World will follow suit on February 14th. In the meantime, check the 2025 movie release dates.

When it was first announced that Deadpool 3 was an upcoming Marvel Studios movie, the first question everybody asked was “Would Deadpool still be Deadpool under Disney?” The studio insisted time and again that the new movie would still be rated R and would be just as much a Deadpool movie as fans wanted. And with Deadpool & Wolverine, we got exactly that. This is not to say there weren’t jokes that Disney wasn’t entirely comfortable with.

Deadpool & Wolverine makes several jokes at the expense of the MCU and Disney. Kevin Feige is called out by name. They joked about Marvel movies that never happened. Even the things Disney asked Deadpool not to joke about were joked about. And yet, apparently, Disney had no issues with any of it. Director Shawn Levy tells EW that there was only one line in the entire movie that they were asked to change. They did so, and Levy says we’ll never learn what the original joke was. He explained…

Ryan Reynolds himself talked about the joke in question with i09. He insisted that they were never told to change the joke, simply asked to do so. The unnamed Disney executive who made the request was clear that they would let the original joke go, but they would appreciate the change. In the end, Reynolds decided to go ahead and make the change.

While we don’t know what the original joke was, we can guess that it had something to do with Ryan Reynolds’ ass, as we do know what joke replaced it. It was a joke involving Pinnochio doing something dirty. Levy continued…

If Disney’s Pinnochio sodomizing Deadpool is the joke that was better in the eyes of the executive, it makes one wonder just what the hell was the original joke. We don’t even really know what the problem with the joke was. Was it even more vulgar? Did it make a Marvel or Disney reference that was worse than the others? Levy and Reynolds say we’ll never know, and considering we still don’t know for sure who leaked the original Deadpool test footage, there’s no reason to believe this word will ever be broken.

It’s an undeniable fact that the market for 2024 movies has had some early favorites to call its champions. Looking at Deadpool & Wolverine’s insane second weekend box office, director Shawn Levy’s love letter to pre-MCU thrills has become one of those success stories, and at a pretty quick pace. Occurring after years of speculation reported through every phase of production, it’s tough to sort out what was truly considered and what was never even a thought.

Thanks to a recent interview that Mr. Levy did for Happy Sad Confused’s Spoiler Special focused on Deadpool 3, we now know one cameo that falls into that second bucket. Unfortunately for all of you Patrick Stewart fans, Professor Charles Xavier didn’t even cross the minds of the team behind Marvel Studios’ current mega hit. The reason why is pretty solid though, as Shawn Levy laid out the truth for Josh Horowitz as follows:

I think it’s time to ask a really important question at this moment in the discussion: is it really that disappointing that Patrick Stewart wasn’t in Deadpool & Wolverine? I mean, despite Stewart’s cagey answers to Deadpool 3 rumors, it’s not like we haven’t seen the OG Professor X back on screen since his fond farewell in Logan. Remember, he played a variant of the telepath in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Naturally this discussion just opens the floor to further comments on the Deadpool 3 cameos that did land in Marvel Studios’ first R-rated foray. And while rumors like Jennifer Garner returning to play her Daredevil/Elektra character did turn out to be accurate, there were some other tasty gems that were omitted from consideration.

The Real Steel director further confirmed why Michael B. Jordan wasn’t considered for a Deadpool & Wolverine comeback, as well as the fact that co-writer Zeb Wells was the person behind making sure Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth from the original X-Men movie trilogy was the variant used in The Void that Cassandra Nova reigned over with an iron mind.

While we’re on the subject, here’s a couple of the other cameos that weren’t on the board, per Shawn Levy’s own recollections:

As privacy continues to be paramount on a Marvel Studios set, Mr. Levy’s last remark plays even better with the crowd who’d expect those sorts of stories to be shot down early and often. Now that the truth is out, we can all take a moment to laugh at what wasn’t true and revel over what came to be. That will naturally be interrupted by returning to the various rumors that have tipped Shawn Levy as a future MCU director across various projects.

Of course, if you’ve somehow haven’t seen Deadpool & Wolverine in theaters, you can still enjoy that particular cinematic adventure as we speak. The Marvel Cinematic Universe recently grew with Deadpool & Wolverine, which is a record-breaking success at the box office. Prior to its release it was the most highly anticipated upcoming Marvel movie in years, and it's been a huge success, bringing the franchise's R-rated humor to the shared universe. There's been a lot of talk about Deadpool's cocaine jokes after switching to Disney. Here's what really happened, according to director Shawn Levy.

After being kept separate for years, Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox finally opened up the door for Wade Wilson to join the MCU. The franchise kept it signature R-rating, but there were some requests from the studio. Chief among them being Kevin Feige not wanting Ryan Reynolds' signature character to do cocaine on screen anymore. This ended up becoming a running joke in Deadpool 3, and while speaking on Happy Sad Confused, Levy revealed the funny way that dialogue came together. In his words:

And just like that, one of Deadpool 3's best runners was born. In typical Ryan Reynolds fashion, he and Shawn Levy found a way to break the fourth wall about joining Marvel, and being under the leadership of Kevin Feige. Although I have to wonder the the MCU boss will think twice before setting down boundaries related to the Merch with a Mouth; they might end up being added to his dialogue.

Wade Wilson didn't get to use cocaine at all during Deadpool & Wolverine's runtime, to the chagrin of Wade's roommate Blind Al, played by Leslie Uggams. She tries to convince him to partake in the drug, while also listing every possible nickname for the substance she could think of. So while they didn't actually do any lines of coke, at least there were a ton of bonkers references to that happening.

While some fans were nervous about the Deadpool franchise joining the MCU, the heart of the bonkers franchise was still in the threequel. In addition to being violent and full of F-bombs, Deadpool & Wolverine's credits also featured a sweet tribute to 20th Century Fox. Plus, fans went wild over various cameos from past movies, including Channing Tatum's Gambit, Dafne Keen's X-23, Wesley Snipes' Blade, and Jennifer Garner's Elektra.

Deadpool & Wolverine is in theaters now (sans drug use), and the next MCU movie hitting theater is Captain America: Brave New World on February 14th. In the meantime, check out the 2025 movie release dates.

Looking over the lineup of upcoming Star Wars movies, one of the many projects in development comes from the mind of Shawn Levy, the filmmaker behind Free Guy, The Adam Project and Deadpool & Wolverine, the latest of the Marvel movies in order. Unlike 2026’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s movie about Rey and James Mangold’s movie about the origins of the Jedi Order, we have no idea of what Levy has planned for his Star Wars movie. However, he has shared the big goal he’s come up with, and my fingers are crossed that Disney doesn’t mess with it.

While the majority of Levy’s recent interview on Happy Sad Confused understandably focused on Deadpool & Wolverine, the writer/director did spend some time towards the end talking with host Josh Horowitz to provide an update on what’s going on with his Star Wars movie. When asked what he loves about the franchise set in a galaxy far, far away, Levy started off by saying:

The Star Wars franchise has been around for nearly 50 years now, and along with the main film series being collectively referred to as the Skywalker Saga, lately many of the Star Wars TV shows that can be streamed with a Disney+ subscription have also been tying back into the deeper mythology. Obviously there’s always going to be some degree of connectivity, like how The Acolyte included those surprise cameos in its Season 1 finale, but then there are series like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka that have been going pretty deep-cut, like tying back to The Clone Wars and Rebels. That can make it harder for someone who’s only watched the Star Wars movies in order to follow along.

Judging by Shawn Levy’s comment, it sounds like he wants his Star Wars movie to be a more standalone affair. Obviously he’ll still lean into the core concepts of the franchise, which is unavoidable, but it won’t be alienating to the more casual fans and general audiences. He continued:

It’s nice to have a little more context about what Shawn Levy is planning for his Star Wars movie, and perhaps these new characters he’ll introduce will lead to another corner of the universe being fleshed out further, like how Andor is fleshing out the life of Diego Luna’s character before the events of Rogue One. That said, it may be a long time before we learn any specific details about Levy’s movie, and that’s assuming the project gets off the ground. After all, multiple movies announced/reported about during the Disney era never ended up moving forward.

For now, you can see Shawn Levy’s directorial and scripting work on display in Deadpool & Wolverine, which is playing in theaters. The cinematic side of the Star Wars franchise will resume when The Mandalorian & Grogu opens on May 22, 2026.

For longtime fans of Marvel Comics and its super-characters’ complicated history with live-action projects, the R-rated sequel Deadpool & Wolverine was a feast for the senses thanks to tons of superhero movie cameos, references to MCU lore, and an admirable amount of F-bombs. It’d be impossible to recognize each and every easter egg upon first viewing, but the film’s director Shawn Levy is obviously aware of every comic and pop culture nod that went into the final product, and he’s apparently got some favorites.

While it’s unclear if or how D&W will have a major impact on the slate of upcoming Marvel phases and movies — now is the time for a Gambit movie, people! — it will forever exist as a gloriously filthy homage to 20th Century Fox partnership with the comic-publishing giant. But it was indeed a nod to the MCU's first sequential film, and Robert Downey Jr.’s titular hero, that made Levy’s shortlist of favorite easter eggs, as he told Variety:

As funny as it was to see Deadpool unsuccessfully attempt to convince Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan to give him a shot working with the Avengers, that scene set inside Happy’s office was all the more memorable for all the MCU iconography on display. And it apparently meant quite a lot to Shawn Levy to include the arc reactor from the first Iron Man, which was engraved with the words “Proof That Tony Stark Has a Heart.”

Levy also enjoyed giving fans something to ponder over by way of the wall photo of Tony with a “mystery” figure that wasn’t hard for fans to figure out. The shot came from Avengers: Endgame, and it’s Tom Holland’s Peter Parker who is blocked off by that toy helmet seen in Iron Man 2. Which presumably happened that way due to Spider-Man rights issues making it complicated to show that character at all.

In any case, that wasn’t the only big easter egg that spoke to Shawn Levy’s own heart. His other two favorite nods are seen during scenes set within The Void, which is easily the most fun setting for eagle-eyed MCU fans. And one is in reference to an Avenger who isn’t a alcoholism-fighting billionaire. As the filmmaker put it:

Indeed, the Thor helmet that popped up in The Void was as classic as superhero costuming gets, and while I may be wrong, it seemed like that helmet was rocking some legitimately feathery wings, as opposed to the metallic and more rigid looks that Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder rocks in those films. (Let’s not even talk about the one from 1988’s Hulk vs. Thor.)

Shawn Levy also referenced a fan-flipping-tastic easter egg that has exactly nothing to do with either Deadpool or Wolverine, and everything to do with the sequel’s “road trip buddy comedy” approach. In his words:

While Deadpool & Wolverine's version of The Void wasn't quite as filled with off-handed references as it was in Loki Season 1, it did come complete with a slew of mutant villains living in Ant-Man's giant corpse. And now that we know the burned-up vehicles were indeed referencing the classic Thanksgiving comedy, it probably wins Best Void Use simply for being a John Candy-related reference.

With so many easter eggs to discovery and enjoy, Deadpool & Wolverine is definitely worthy of a rewatch or two, and considering it's already approaching a billion dollars at the box office, I dare say we'll be able to take in repeat viewings at the theater for weeks to come.

Since the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, fans have been absolutely buzzing about the copious amount of cameos that were included in the movie. A number of familiar faces cropped up, from Chris Evans’ Human Torch to Jennifer Garner’s Elektra. Of course, there were more than a few Marvel-Fox alums that didn’t return for the 2024 movie schedule release. That includes Ben Affleck’s Daredevil, who famously appeared alongside Garner’s sai-wielding warrior in his eponymous 2003 film. Director Shawn Levy recently explained how he and his team reached out to celebrities for cameos and revealed whether Affleck was ever asked to appear. He also explained how said decisions affected the end-credits scene.

Ben Affleck was linked to the latest Deadpool flick back in June 2023. At that time, it was reported that the former Matt Murdock actor had been spotted on the set. Ultimately, though, an appearance from Affleck’s version of the Man Without Fear didn’t come to pass. Shawn Levy, who’s been sharing plenty of behind-the-scenes details about the movie since its release, was asked if he and lead actor/co-producer Ryan Reynolds ever reached out to Affleck. Based on what the filmmaker told Variety, nothing truly materialized on that front:

It would seem that the red-costumed hero was, at the very least, considered early on, but the Argo star wasn’t actually contacted over a potential reprisal. One can also understand why he and many others ultimately didn’t receive calls to appear in the threequel. After all, Shawn Levy and the producers ultimately had to pick characters that they believed would best fit the story they wanted to tell. The notion of having to look over a “70-name menu” of classic characters sounds daunting but, ultimately, I think Levy and co. made the right decisions.

Another firm creative decision was implementing that sizzle reel amid the credits, which consists of various behind-the-scenes moments captured from the Fox-era Marvel movies. It’s an emotional sight to say the least, and there’s even some footage from Daredevil. Some may have been hoping for an actual appearance from the character, but that nod in the credits scene is also fitting.

The legacy of Ben Affleck’s Daredevil movie is somewhat complex. On the one hand, the 2003 flick (which was a box office hit) was panned at the time of its release and is still derided today. However, there are also fans who have a lot of affection for the film. Though the leading man himself has even chastised the comic book movie, what Affleck appreciates about the film is that it examines the experience of being blind (as the hero is) in a respectful way.

Even though the reception to that version of DD has been mixed, it honestly could’ve been cool to see him pop up in Deadpool & Wolverine, especially given Elektra’s role. Jennifer Garner absolutely crushed it, after last appearing as the aforementioned character in her eponymous 2005 flick. She even managed to impress her co-star, Dafne Keen, with her ability to pick up her sai moves again after all these years. Garner also gets brownie points for expertly delivering a non-brutal (but still funny) joke that references her divorce from Ben Affleck. Shawn Levy also explained to Variety that that quip and others were approved by the actors before they were delivered as well.

Any chance of fans seeing the 2000s iteration of Daredevil crop up in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe-set production seem slim. However, one definitely could’ve said that about Elektra, Blade or any of the characters featured in D&W. So there may be reason to cling on to some hope but, right now, let’s just give Shawn Levy and his crew kudos for what they’ve accomplished with this movie.

Ryan Reynolds' is well known for his signature snarky and quick-witted sense of humor, and he brings it to his character Deadpool in spades. Of course, we can expect to see it in full force once Deadpool and Wolverine premieres on the 2024 movie schedule. However, before that, we got to witness Taylor Swift show off her take on it as she took to social media to recommend the upcoming Marvel movie.

After months and months of rumors that Swift might appear as Dazzler in the third Deadpool movie’s cast, she took to her Instagram stories to recommend the film to fans, take a look:

Talk about a stamp of approval! And it’s perfect timing too, because Deadpool and Wolverine’s release date is tomorrow, July 26.

It's a well-known fact that Taylor Swift is great friends with Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. However, I wasn't expecting her to recommend the movie so highly and publically, considering that's not something she normally does. I love to see it, though! What makes it even better is she harnessed the sense of humor the movie's leading man is so well known for perfectly.

From Reynolds' faux feud with Hugh Jackman to him and his wife constantly teasing each other, he’s an expert at sarcastic, witty and occasionally even heartfelt comedy. Swift’s IG Story had all those elements. As she posted an image of her with Reynolds, Jackman, Shawn Levy and Lively, she proved that by writing a heartfelt statement about the Deadpool actor and the movie, before turning it on its head with this quip:

She also gave a “shout out” to Wade Wilson for being her “godkids’ sperm donor,” which is genuinely hilarious, and a fun nod to her close friendship with Reynolds, Lively and their kids. 

Along with all of this, her public endorsement of Deadpool and Wolverine also adds some fun fuel to the fire that Swift might appear in this movie. While I really don’t know if she does, and reports claim she won’t be in Deadpool 3, this post certainly has me cooking up conspiracy theories again…

Overall, Deadpool’s first foray into the MCU has been getting pretty good reviews, and Swift’s is not only glowing, but funny. So, if you were on the fence about seeing Deadpool and Wolverine (which our review gave 3.5 out of 5 stars) and you were entertained by her post that mirrored the humor you’ll find in this film, take this as your sign to go.

When Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26 as the latest of many upcoming Marvel movies, anyone who’s seen Ryan Reynolds’ first two offerings knows a little of what to expect. The snarky, fourth-wall-breaking superhero is back, this time with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in a pairing that’s seemed inevitable from the beginning. Many critics considered it the “ultimate Deadpool movie” following initial screenings, and that means that despite some flaws in the story, audiences can expect to laugh. In fact, those who have seen the movie say Reynolds’ character comes so hard (heh) with the jokes that a second viewing is a necessity.

Much in the same way that Barbie took shots at Mattel in one of 2023’s best movies, Ryan Reynolds apparently doesn’t pull too many punches on the MCU in this one, so grab your wild Deadpool 3 popcorn bucket, and let’s see what critics have to say, starting with CinemaBlend’s review of Deadpool & Wolverine. Eric Eisenberg gives it 3.5 stars out of 5, noting the film’s gratuitous fan service and complete mess of a narrative. However, it’s still a “raucous good time,” made palatable with a healthy dose of self-awareness. He says:

David Ehrlich of IndieWire gives it a C+ for thin plotting and other story issues, but agrees that fans will be won over by the humor and cameos, one of which left the critic crying with laughter in his screening. Ehrlich writes:

Pete Hammond of Deadline loves Deadpool & Wolverine’s salty dialogue, and while Hugh Jackman is “perfection” as the clawed superhero, it’s the glee Ryan Reynolds takes in bringing his character’s crude humor and off-color jokes to the MCU that makes this movie so enjoyable. In the critic’s words:

Tom Jorgensen of IGN rates it a “Good” 7 out of 10, and while this critic thinks Ryan Reynolds may have sanded off the edges of a few of his jokes, what his character does bring to the table breathes new, menacing life into the MCU. Jorgensen continues:

John Kirk of Original Cin gives it an A, saying that fans ultimately aren’t going to care that the story is weak, because the fights are massive and the jokes are flying nonstop. In Kirk’s words:

Whether you’ve seen all of the Marvel movies in order or just the first two Deadpool movies (which can be streamed with a Disney+ subscription), the critics seem to agree that Ryan Reynolds’ irreverent superhero is back at full strength with his quips in Deadpool & Wolverine. Many moons ago, when Shawn Levy and Anthony Mackie were certainly less of household names than they are now, the two of them, in conjunction with Hugh Jackman, put out a little movie called Real Steel. It didn’t do so hot at the box office, but it emotionally resonated with a lot of folks in the years after its release and people still think fondly of the little robot-fighting story that could. So, when Mackie showed up at the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, it had tongues wagging. And I’m not just talking about a possible cameo in the upcoming Marvel movie.

Mackie shared some pics from the New York screening of the latest movie in Marvel’s long and storied timeline. You can see the red carpet looks on his Instagram, which he accompanied with a comment reminding people the moment, was, in fact, a Real Steel reunion.

While there was some chatter about the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World star possibly appearing in the Deadpool & Wolverine cast, a slew of the fan comments about the MCU star had more to do with the 2011 film he’d starred in with Jackman. Yes, a lot of people really have fond memories having watched the flick in theaters or later during its streaming release; they are now calling for Real Steel 2.

Honestly, Shawn Levy has been bullish about the possibility of making a sequel even though it’s more than a decade after the original came out. He has a great working relationship with Hugh Jackman, after all, and he’s been clear a streaming home might be the best fit for the project. Which is why it’s nice he also just so happens to have a good working relationship with Netflix and Disney+, as well.

He said back in 2022 that it was only during the pandemic that Real Steel really found a home with audiences when it got its own Netflix release. It was similar to what happened with Suits when everyone and their mother seemingly started binging the legal drama. I assume this argument is helped along by the fact, Levy, Jackman and Mackie have never been more popular, as well.

Anthony Mackie said three years ago that he’d like to see a “Mad Max meets Real Steel” version of the universe, so he's on board for this too. A conversation about a potential Real Steel streaming series instead of a movie has also been discussed, and Levy has said when the right idea comes along, they’ll pounce. From the sounds of things though, the fanbase has been ready for more than a little while, if a few red carpet photos can get people in this much of a fervor.

For now, they’ll have to just be content with Mackie showing up to support Jackman and Levy’s new Deadpool & Wolverine movie, out in theaters in previews tonight and officially hitting the 2024 movie schedule July 26th.

The mix of outrageous comedic sensibilities and ability to break the fourth wall allows Deadpool as a character to get away with a lot cinematically that other big screen superheroes can’t. If the audience is perpetually kept in a fit of laughter intense enough to evoke tears, it makes it easy to look past most script and story issues, and any kind of gratuitous fan service is made far more palatable when it is slathered in self-awareness.

There is, however, a standout difference between how those special qualities are employed in director Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine compared to the first two movies in the Ryan Reynolds-led series. In Deadpool and Deadpool 2, the extreme humor and winks to the camera are fun bonuses to go with protagonist-centric plots, but the third chapter is wholly defined by them – resulting in a narrative is a complete mess that really falls apart with any applied scrutiny.

That being said, it’s a complete mess that does successfully keep you entertained and howling for two-plus hours and features a number of smart and weird surprises that will put big smiles on the faces of comic book fans everywhere.

Picking up in the wake of the time travel antics at the end of Deadpool 2, the sequel sees Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) inexplicably travels across dimensions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but when he gets rejected for Avengers membership, he returns home and makes the decision to retire his red and black suit for good. He makes for an awful car salesman who can’t stop himself from swearing and talking about his sex life with customers, but he is content living a life surrounded by close friends.

This contentment is unfortunately interrupted by agents of the Time Variance Authority (see: Disney+’s Loki series), who come to Wade’s door during a birthday celebration and take him to see a mysterious gentleman named Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen). The antihero formally known as Deadpool is told that he has the opportunity to become the great savior of the Marvel Cinematic Universe… but doing so would mean leaving his own universe and letting it get destroyed. Not willing to selfishly sacrifice all of the people he loves, he dedicates himself to searching for the one hero who could potentially fix everything: The Wolverine (Hugh Jackman).

It’s hard to imagine that Deadpool & Wolverine won’t be remembered as the funniest comedy of 2024.

There are criticisms to be levied against Deadpool & Wolverine (and I will levy them), but above all else, it can be said that the film is a raucous good time and will make you cackle until your sides feel like they have been punctured by Logan’s adamantium claws. There is a phenomenal comedic magic that Ryan Reynolds is able to conjure when he sinks into this character and throws on that mask, as his comedic timing is impeccable and with every breath comes some kind of ridiculous witticism, weird threat, or meta commentary that inspires hysterics. There will be value in a second screening for many reasons (there are tiny references and easter eggs hidden everywhere), but the greatest plus will be hearing lines that I missed while recovering from giggle fits.

Like the previous two Deadpool movies, the new film is a spotlight for the comedic talents of Ryan Reynolds, but it’s not solely a one man show thanks to the strong supporting cast (most of whom I can’t discuss in this spoiler-free venue). Hugh Jackman’s greatest contribution to the work leans more to the dramatic side of things – as he delivers buckets of gravitas playing a Wolverine variant who is responsible for the death of the X-Men in his own world – but he is also a perfect straight man foil to Reynolds. Logan’s ever-lowering tolerance of Deadpool’s shtick adds a extra layer of appreciation for the red-suited menace’s motor mouth, but his distinctive brand of gruff aggression also inspires independent laughs.

Deadpool & Wolverine unfurls a lot of awesome surprises, but it has major story problems and lacks an individual style.

It’s rare that a joke overstays its welcome (an exception being an opening credits fight/dance sequence set to N’Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye”), and audiences will be hard pressed to not be entertained by the experience as a whole, but there was also a point toward the middle of the screening when I internally asked myself, “When is this movie going to add some meat to its plot?” That question never got satiated.

In addition to certain things that simply don’t make sense (such as Deadpool’s aforementioned trip to and from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for his Avengers audition), certain plots/ideas are introduced and then dropped (like Deadpool becoming the savior of the MCU) and the antagonists are deeply underwhelming. Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Paradox ends up being little more than a vehicle for exposition about the film’s big McGuffin (a Time Ripper capable of instantly destroying branch realities) and Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova is ultimately a run-of-the-mill supervillain craving power over the universe.

The energy that should be spent on building a story is instead diverted into orchestrating cameos and exciting showdowns, which ends up being a blend of wild and surprising fun as well as some ham-fistedness. As a decades-long comic book fan to whom Deadpool & Wolverine is directly appealing, I think it’s a cinematic gift that there are multiple sequences where the two titular, superhealing mutants are beating the ever-loving shit out of each other (particularly their scuffle within the confines of a Honda Odyssey), and I’m blown away by some of the cameos that the blockbuster pulls off (not to mention the brilliant inside baseball jokes that they inspire). At the same time, there are some developments that feel like they were added to the script via Post-it note, and the film fails to deliver a satisfying ending because so little creative effort is put into the narrative.

Unfortunately, the film is also a step down stylistically compared to its predecessors. While both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 feature sequences that do a wonderful job highlighting the particular talents of directors Tim Miller and David Leitch (the frozen in time opening credits and Cable prison attack respectively coming to mind), Shawn Levy doesn’t provide any kind of individual flash that lets the film stand out stylistically from the other 33 films in the MCU canon – beyond the extreme gore and violence, that is. He demonstrates a knowledge of how to appeal to Marvel fans, evidenced up front by finally getting Hugh Jackman to wear the iconic yellow and blue Wolverine costume, but it’s a movie that is lacking in signature moments that don’t involve cameo revelations.

In reflection, Deadpool & Wolverine is comparable to Avengers: Endgame, but with comedy emphasized over narrative coherence. Some of the shine comes off the apple when you really start thinking about the work, but it’s worthy of recommendation nonetheless. On opening weekend, the dizzying jokes-per-minute rate is going to result in theater hallways vibrating from regular bursts of hysterical laughter as moviegoers experience one of the funniest movies in years, and everyone will be joyfully buzzing about the unexpected moves it pulls off. It has a lot to offer while still not being Marvel at its best.

Those who’ve watched the Marvel movies in order surely know that a vast array of directors have brought their talents to the studios’ interconnected cinematic universe. Veteran filmmaker Shawn Levy is one of the latest people to helm such a production, as he held down directing duties on the greatly anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine. Last month, fans were under the impression that Marvel Studios appreciated his work, as sources alleged that Levy was in the running for Avengers 5. That was never officially confirmed, though now Levy himself is at least addressing whether he sees himself sticking with the superhero brand.

What Did Shawn Levy Say About The Marvel Rumors That Swirled Around Him?

In June, it was reported that the Cheaper by the Dozen director was simply in negotiations to helm the fifth Avengers flick, which was previously subtitled The Kang Dynasty. It was also noted, though, that the filmmaker wouldn’t absolutely commit to the project and that Marvel Studios was holding meetings with other directors because of that. Shawn Levy was asked about the ever-churning rumor mill while walking the red carpet at the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere. The ever-conscientious Levy shared some reasonable thoughts on the subject:

So that’s not a definitive, “Yes, I’m going to direct another Marvel Cinematic Universe film” that he shared with EW. However, it’s also not a, “No, the chances of me teaming up with the studio again are slim.” If anything, he does sound optimistic about the possibility of working with producer Kevin Feige and co. again at some point down the road. It honestly makes sense as to why the Canadian director would likely remain in the fold.

By all accounts, the Adam Project helmer enjoyed working with Kevin Feige and the other bigwigs at Marvel and vice versa. Not only that but, so far, Deadpool & Wolverine reactions have been highly positive. So it may behoove Feige and his team to keep the Free Guy alum within their stable of talent as they previously did with the likes of James Gunn, Joe & Anthony Russo and Ryan Coogler. And, quite frankly, I think Shawn Levy could direct one of a variety of future MCU productions, regardless of whether it’s the embattled Avengers 5.

How Much Is Known About Avengers 5’s Development At This Point?

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was officially announced by Kevin Feige at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. Since then, the superhero team-up flick has seen its share of setbacks. Shortly after the movie was confirmed to be in the works, it was reported that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Destin Daniel Cretton had signed on to direct. And, by September 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania scribe Jeff Loveness was attached to write it. The film would take a step back in November 2023 when Cretton exited, and sources later revealed that Loveness would no longer be penning the script.

In November 2023, Loki writer Michael Waldron was tapped for the production though, by July 2024, Waldron reportedly exited as well, marking another Avengers 5 setback. That same month, however, it was also reported that the Russo Brothers would direct both that movie andt the sixth film in the franchise. That’s yet to be confirmed, but it could end up being announced at SDCC 2024 this month.

Even if Shawn Levy doesn’t end up helming a film involving Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the notion of him directing another MCU feature (or even a TV show) isn’t too far-fetched. Of course, Marvel would have to work around his schedule, as the director has a few notable productions on the docket. That includes the Star Wars movie he recently dropped an update on. Ultimately, we’ll just have to wait and see if there’s another superhero-centric directing gig in Levy’s future.

Star Wars has remained one of the biggest franchises in the world, but in recent years it has done so through success not with movies, but with streaming. It’s been five years since we’ve seen a Star Wars movie in theaters, but in recent months it has looked like that finally might start to change. Several upcoming Star Wars movies appear to be moving forward at one speed or another and that includes a project being helmed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy.

On Demand Entertainment caught up with Shawn Levy at the UK press junket for Deadpool & Wolverine and asked the director about his Star Wars project. The director was realistic about the fact that the movie is not yet a sure thing, but he says the powers that be at Lucasfilm are excited about the idea. Levy said…

Understandably, Shawn Levy wouldn’t talk about his Star Wars movie like it’s a guarantee, because it certainly isn’t. There have been several Star Wars movies that were supposed to happen only to be canceled, or at the very least have been in no hurry to get produced. Just because Levy has an idea for a movie doesn’t mean it will happen.

At the same time, it’s still exciting to hear that there’s an idea that seems to have everybody involved quite excited. Deadpool & Wolverine is likely to be a massive hit when it comes out next week, and that is going to only make Shawn Levy a more in-demand director. If anything it will likely make any Star Wars project he wants to make more attractive.

While there are still a lot of questions about the future of Star Wars movies, things are looking pretty exciting overall. We know that The Mandalorian & Grogu release date is set for 2026. It will be the first Star Wars movie in years. In addition to Levy’s project, we know Taidi Waititi is still working on a Star Wars concept. The previously thought-dead Rogue Squadron movie from director Patty Jenkins isn’t scrapped after all. And with the end in sight for Rian Johnson’s Knives Out mysteries, we may see him finally move forward on his Star Wars project that, as far as we know, has not been canceled.

Nobody seems to be having more fun on a press tour than the cast of Deadpool & Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have been doing anything for a laugh, including making street meat look like Wolverine’s claws, and even carrying around a dog they lovingly call “Dogpool” at press events. Even if they are having fun promoting their latest film, the stars still won’t miss out on an opportunity to wind down after a busy day. Jackman recently posted a photo with Reynolds and director Shawn Levy enjoying martinis during a dinner together. Of course, Reynolds couldn’t resist leaving a sarcastic (and hilarious) James Bond-centric comment under the adorable photo. 

I personally can’t get enough of behind-the-scenes hangout photos from the D&W press tour. The stars seem to truly be bonding (no pun intended) and deepening their friendship even more. Hugh Jackman decided to take a break from his fake feud with Ryan Reynolds to post a more earnest photo of the two of them sipping martinis with Shawn Levy. He included a sweet caption, referring to the group as “best friends” and shouting out the bartender who prepared their beverages. You can see the post from the Logan star’s Instagram below: 

They look like they are having an absolute blast. The Australian seems to be trying to stop himself from laughing even harder than he already is, and the goofy martini sips from the other two are both funny and adorable. The Free Guy star also noticed how silly the men looked enjoying their drinks and noted they didn’t look at all as cool as the one and only 007:

The self-deprecating humor is killing me and is one of the reasons that so many people like myself love Ryan Reynolds so much. He has a point… the movie star fully positioned himself over the martini almost like he was terrified of the beverage spilling. But, let’s be honest, does anyone actually look cool sipping martinis? James Bond may be the only person who ever made that drinking that beverage look cool. Those glasses are truly just asking for trouble. There are probably more people that resemble Reynolds drinking a martini than 007. 

Ironically, while neither of the upcoming Marvel movie's leading men will probably ever play Commander Bond, the role is still seemingly up for grabs right now. Since the conclusion of Daniel Craig's stint as the character, many have been eagerly anticipating the announcement of the next 007 lead. Reports have suggested that the gig will go Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who's played coy about whether he's been cast.

While Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds are far from likely Bond candidates, I think fans are happy seeing them in their Marvel roles and making jokes off camera. The two have natural casual chemistry in their personal lives, and I can’t wait for that to be projected on the big screen. Reynolds’ Deadpool character has been teasing the presence of Wolvie for two movies now, and Jackman joining the third film feels like such a big moment. The trailers for Deadpool & Wolverine tease hilarious banter and NSFW jokes that the franchise is known for, and it's one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Maybe I’ll just grab a martini at the theater and enjoy the film like the featured duo.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is always releasing new content, both in theaters and streaming with a Disney+ subscription. The next upcoming Marvel movie hitting theaters is Deadpool & Wolverine, and excitement for the blockbuster is sky high. But it turns out Marvel was apparently about to give up on the idea of Deadpool 3 when Hugh Jackman got involved.

What we know about Deadpool & Wolverine is super limited, which has actually helped increase fan excitement about the forthcoming blockbuster. Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine helped make it the most anticipated MCU movie coming to theaters this year, and it sounds like he signed on to the project at exactly the right time. During an interview with Variety, director Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds revealed that development had hit a snag before the Greatest Showman actor joined the fun. As they put it: 

• Shawn Levy: We had been trying to craft a story for several months. We had some interesting approaches, but it never gelled. Literally within a day of Hugh joining this story, we knew what the movie was.
• Ryan Reynolds: We had a why. When Hugh called, Shawn and I were on our last pitch. Right before, we were like, 'We’ll do the Zoom with Marvel, and if they don’t bite on this pitch that we have, we’ll stand down.'
• Shawn Levy: We got on Zoom with Feige, and he’s like, 'Look, we’re not quite cracking it.' We were able to say, 'Actually, a new wrinkle: What would you say to the Wolverine?'

There you have it. While Deadpool 3 seemed like a sure thing after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, it took Hugh Jackman's return to Logan to help really get the project off its feet. And from the look of Deadpool & Wolverine's trailers, it's going to be a fun ride with him back in the claws. 

From all of the limited footage we've seen from the forthcoming blockbuster, it looks like Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's faux feud will be on full display for the third Deadpool flick. So it should be no surprise that that duo helped to get Deadpool & Wolverine off the ground at the studio. 

While fans are definitely eager to see Wade Wilson and Logan's relationship play out on the big screen, there are countless fan theories and rumors about who else might make up the Deadpool 3 cast list. Some popular names being tossed around online include Halle Berry's Storm, Famke Janssen's Jean Grey, and Patrick Stewart's Professor X. Then there's other rumored characters like Jennifer Garner's Elektra and Taylor Swift's Dazzler that are also in the conversation.

Luckily, all of our questions will be revealed shortly when Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters July 26th. While we wait, check the 2025 movie release dates.
