All These Years Later, And I'm Still Amazed That Everything Everywhere All At Once Was Such A Hit. Here's Why

I remember when the Academy Award-winning Everything Everywhere All At Once first came out, and it absolutely blew my mind.

What surprised me the most about the film: OTHER people were blown away by it, too. Because, similar to how I'm always surprised that my favorite author, Kurt Vonnegut, is considered a national treasure (Surprised because his writing is so WEIRD), I'm also still shocked at just how much audiences loved EEAAO, because like Vonnegut, the movie is so different from anything else out there.

So, if you’ll allow me, here are a couple of other reasons why I'm still amazed that EEAAO was such a hit.

I Love That Such An Unconventional Immigrant Story Was So Big

There are plenty of conventional immigrant stories. The Godfather (especially its partial prequel, The Godfather, Part II) is a sprawling, albeit simply told, immigrant story. The coolest gangster movie ever made, Scarface, is a simply told immigrant story, too. The Don Bluth classic, An American Tail, is an immigrant story featuring animals, which is unique in a sense, but also conventionally told.

Then, you have Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is probably the most unconventional immigrant story ever made. It's actually a story of three generations of Asians. Michelle Yeoh plays the matriarch and the middle of the Asian-American immigrant experience. She runs a laundromat and is being audited by the IRS, and soon goes on a multiversal journey to find the best version of herself…sort of. And that's the thing about this movie: since it’s an absurdist, martial arts comedy, it plays with several different ideas.

Her daughter, played by Stephanie Hsu, doesn't really care about the Asian-American experience. In fact, she doesn't really care about anything at all since she's a nihilist. Her mother, however, feels a bit confined by her heritage, as she feels she has to live up to enormous expectations set by her father, played by the legend, James Hong.

In the end, it's a story about the Asian-American immigrant experience…and everything else in between. I still blows my mind that so many people of different races vibed with it, given the fact that it's so weird and also so in tune with the Asian-American experience.

The Movie Is Also Further Proof That Creative Filmmaking Is Still Alive And Well

Another thing that utterly blows my mind about EEAAO is that people totally fell in love with a movie whose pure appeal was its creativity. With sequels and remakes feeling like the norm these days, it makes my heart glad that a movie as creative and bold as EEAAO could be embraced by so many people…for the most part anyway.

I know some people detest this movie; I feel like they detest it for the same reason that people detested my beloved Sinners, and that’s because they think it’s “super overrated.”

I love that it found an audience that is so passionate about the film that they’ll stand by it and say that it deserved the hype. A big reason for this passion is that it's so rare that a movie can be this creative, and this DIFFERENT, and still be a movie that won tons of awards like Best Picture.

Because in a landscape where so many studios seem not to want to take major risks, EEAAO still seems like an anomaly, as it feels like both a cult movie and a massive blockbuster at the same time, and I still just marvel at that fact. Even all these years later.

I Really Hope Peacock’s Laid Gets Renewed, And If It Does, I’d Make A Few Key Changes

I binged all of the American version of Laid over my holiday break. I threw on the first episode because I needed to make a quick viewing decision before my food got cold, and after about ten minutes, I was positive I’d finish the entire season. I did. I watched all eight episodes over the course of two days and then immediately hit up the Internet to see if it was getting renewed. Turns out it’s in limbo. No one is quite sure if/ when it’s coming back. I really hope it does, but also, I hope it learns some lessons from the first season and makes some key changes.

Before I get into those changes though, let’s talk about all the good stuff. That starts with the chemistry between leads Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet, who have a fantastic rapport. The yin and yang of their relationship feels so genuine, and the way they communicate feels like best friends who have known each other forever. As a viewer, you just want to spend time with them, partly because of that authentic relationship and partly because they’re often saying hilarious things.

And it’s not just their banter that’s hilarious. Laid is often very funny in really subversive and unconventional ways. Its sense of humor is really pointed and sometimes kind of mean-spirited. That’s probably to be expected, given the show is about a woman whose former hook-ups are all dying, but the point of the series isn’t to laugh at these (mostly) young men dying in strange ways. Instead, it has a lot to say about sex and relationships and friendships and coping mechanisms and abandonment, and a lot of the comedy comes from addressing those issues in really blunt and aggressive ways. Sometimes the comedy even comes from dunking on its own main characters, especially Hsu’s Ruby and Mamet’s on-again-off-again boyfriend Zack, who is played in all his buffoonish glory by Andre Hyland.

Co-creator Nahnatchka Khan (Fresh Off The Boat, Always Be My Maybe) has been involved in a lot of funny projects, but this is easily her most unhinged. That’s saying something since she wrote a bunch of episodes of American Dad, but you can also see some elements of previous writing jobs on shows like Malcolm In The Middle and Pepper Ann coming through here too. Laid isn’t the sort of thing you’d watch with your mom or your kids, but underneath all those jokes about sex timeline maps and thrusting noises, there’s a real heart and a point of view to it.

Unfortunately, that’s also one of the show’s biggest problems. I like that it has a heart, and I like that it has real things to say about some heavy topics. The comedy is sharper, and it punches harder when it comes from a place of authenticity. Laid doesn’t always come from that authentic place though. Yes, the premise is absolutely ridiculous and involves a ton of dudes dying in a really short amount of time, but Khan and co-creator Sally Bradford McKenna still sometimes waffle back and forth in how realistic the world the characters are inhabiting should feel.

Let me try to explain what I’m saying another way. Think of comedy as a spectrum. On one side is something like Office Space that’s really subtle and grounded, where the jokes mostly come from things like not getting a slice of birthday cake or sitting near a coworker that sounds too cheery on the phone. Then on the other side, you have something like Airplane! where the jokes come from things like a character’s drinking problem where he literally can’t get liquid in his mouth. I love both of those movies, but I wouldn’t want to mix them together.

When Laid struggles, it’s often because the show gives us moments where we’re supposed to connect with characters on a very honest and human level and then follows them up with interactions that feel contrived and inauthentic, as if they’re merely to generate comedy. I love Laid when its making jokes about a boyfriend frantically trying to do all the tasks his girlfriend has told him to do over the past few months in order to get out of the doghouse. I like it a lot less when it’s introducing bumbling detectives and incompetent therapists and witches that work at Cinnabon, as the over the top style they’re written in contrasts too sharply with the moments that feel more genuine, at least for me.

I also think Laid needs to work on Ruby’s dynamic with her love interests, particularly Tommy Martinez’s Isaac. The show gives us a chance to see them connect over their shared love of musicals, but as an audience, we don’t feel that same rapport Ruby has with her best friend AJ or even with her other love interest Richie, played by Michael Angarano. We get a sense that she clearly likes Isaac. That’s obvious from her actions and also the way the character looks at him, but so much of Laid is about the chemistry and dynamic and the show needs to spend more time developing that, or else it’s not going to feel like a real choice between him and Richie.

I like Laid. There were a lot of moments during the first season where I even loved it, but if Peacock gives it a greenlight to return for another season, I hope everyone involved is open to tweaking some things. If it develops some more relatable side characters, improves Ruby’s relationships with her love interests and scales back like 10% of its most outlandish bits of unrealistic humor, I think it could be one of the best comedies on television and one of the best things Hsu has done, which is saying a lot. It's just not quite there yet.

I Just Started Watching Laid, And It’s The Quirky Comedy I Won’t Be Watching With My Mom This Holiday Season

A delightful holiday treat just dropped for those with a Peacock subscription, and it’s none other than a streaming comedy starring Girls’ Zosia Mamet and Everything Everywhere All At Once’s Stephanie Hsu. The two have great chemistry and the comedy has a totally unexpected premise. Yet one thing is for certain: I absolutely will not be watching it with my mom this holiday season.

That wasn’t always the intended outcome when I perused the 2024 TV schedule hoping to find some stuff to watch this coming week. I’ll be hosting guests who really enjoy television and despite the racy title Laid, I thought a comedy might be just the ticket. But this is a comedy about a young party planner who’s slept with an untold number of men when they start mysteriously dying in the order they’ve slept with our fearless lead, the charming yet remarkably selfish young woman named Ruby.

Tonally it’s wild, and I’ve seen a few other critics so far calling the show uneven, but I love it. Testing out the first few episodes, Hsu and Mamet definitely have A+ chemistry. To be honest, it almost feels as if the conversations in the show are ones they've had with one another in real life, and I’m so happy they ended up on TV together. It's so good that it sort of reminds me of Lorelei and Rory’s quick-witted banter in Gilmore Girls, only in some ways it’s nothing like the Amy Sherman-Palladino show, as it’s also modern, graphic and the conversation feels more realistic, even when the plot gets zany. Still, the end result is the same: Some of the moments are so funny in this show I laughed out loud.

The sex itself isn’t super racy or weird to watch with your rents, though the occasional violent moment might really come atcha out of nowhere. Still, the real reason I’d probably avoid watching with relatives has to do with some of the frank conversations our characters have about such taboo topics as blowjobs versus handjobs, creating blowjob overlay maps and discussing sex loophole surrogates. And that’s not even getting into jokes about anything including weird thrusting noises guys make during sex, culturally inappropriate kimonos, oh yeah, and the number of Elsbeth ads we've all been bombarded with since Season 1 premiered last year.

The Best Ways To Watch Laid In The US And Outside It

Outside of the show being legitimately laugh-out-loud funny, the character development feels real and I like that it’s trying for something new. New comedies -- particularly good cringe comedies -- have had a really tough time breaking out in recent years, and it’s nice to see super flawed people behaving badly –but hysterically – again.

Laid is honestly the streaming delight I had no idea would be dropping before the holidays. It’s probably the best thing about streaming that something can just come out of nowhere and be the center of my TV universe for a few days (though alternatively when people don’t find these delightful gems they often end up hitting the year end TV cancelation list.) Just, maybe, you know, don’t watch it with your parents.

I Know Joy Ride Is Raunchy As Heck, But I Want To Talk About The Refreshing Take On Female Friendship

Minor spoilers for Joy Ride are ahead. Read with caution.

I love a raunchy comedy, and let’s just say Joy Ride takes the raunch to a whole new level. At one point, Adele Lim’s directorial debut, which lives in the same genre as Bridesmaids and Girls Trip, was supposed to be called Joy Fuck Club, and it lives up to that name. However, the movie is more than its dirty jokes, in fact, it uses this type of comedy to enhance its storytelling and share a refreshing take on female friendship.

This movie, also co-written by Lim, tells the story of Audrey (Ashley Park) as she travels to China to close a business deal with her friend Lolo (Sherry Cola) and Lolo’s cousin Dead Eye (Sabrina Wu). However, the trip turns into a wild quest to find Audrey’s birth mom, and the group, which also features Audrey’s actress friend Kat (Stephanie Hsu), ends up on a wild adventure that includes a drug bust, the song “WAP,” a wild night with basketball players, and more.

It’s a raunchy, hilarious take on a woman trying to find herself, and while the laughs are a mile a minute, Joy Ride also shows audiences the power of friendship in an authentic way.

Joy Ride Doesn't Hold Back From Exploring How Beautifully Messy Friendships Can Be

Much like Bridesmaids, this story centers partly around the idea of mixing friendships, like when your childhood best friend meets your college roommate. And, like that older film, it doesn't hold back when it comes to how messy friendship can be.

My favorite beautifully messy friendship in this movie was between Lolo, Audrey’s childhood bestie, and Kat, Audrey’s BFF from college. The two have an awkward, but really funny rivalry, at the beginning of the movie, because they both want to be Audrey's BFFL, which is honestly so real. Their bickering had me cracking up, but it also depicted this nuanced thing that happens in friendships when groups mix.

Luckily, it had a happy ending, and the two came together to help out their friend.

The other primary example of the complexities of female friendship comes when Audrey has a major breakdown about her identity and her biological mother. While she’s having this moment, she calls out all her friends, specifically Lolo, who had spent the film pressuring Audrey to find her mom. It’s a moment of rage and passion, but it’s also realistic. Following this, even though they’re mad at each other, the characters come back together to truly support one another, showing this undying love.

Overall, Joy Ride shows the ups and downs of companionship, and authentically highlights both the amazing and tough parts of friendship, which I really loved.

Every Character In Joy Ride Is Three-Dimensional, Flawed And Funny

The movie's biggest strength is its leading ensemble of up-and-coming Asian actors. Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu each play unique three-dimensional characters that are hilarious and deeply relatable. This ultimately created a wacky, yet perfectly balanced group who complimented one another throughout the whole film.

As I mentioned in my review of Joy Ride, Park plays Audrey, a brilliant lawyer who is also hilarious and horny, she also has a sick Gollum impression up her sleeve. Meanwhile, Cola’s character, Lolo, is a starving artist who is incredibly confident and very sexual. Hsu plays a sexually repressed actress, Wu plays Dead Eye, Lolo’s cousin who is the odd one out at first, but who's also so sweet and caring. When you put all four together its a recipe for beautiful chaos.

Each of the four leading characters are well-defined and complex. For example, Audrey is serious and career driven, but she’s also super down to party and quite silly. Things like this show the nuance of their characters, and because Lim didn’t write them as tropes, it makes for a unique and authentic ensemble. And, said ensemble is one of the major reasons why the film is such a joy.

The Raunchy Humor Actually Makes The Storyline Better, Too

Joy Ride is so specifically funny and raunchy, and by not holding back it makes for not only a hilarious movie but an empowering storyline. For a long time, it felt like topics like a woman’s sex life were taboo and weren’t supposed to be talked about. However, that idea has thankfully been thrown out the window, and this movie smashed it to pieces.

Seeing this cast really lean into the raunchy humor is empowering, and it’s validating to see these characters being their true, authentic, silly and horny selves. I mean, just watch the basketball scene and you’ll know what I mean. Not only does this make the characters more three-dimensional it also enhances the story, and makes it both niche and universal, so people everywhere can relate to it.

I found myself thinking about this a lot when Kristen Meinzer, the co-host of Daily Fail, appeared on Pop Culture Happy Hour, and explained how this hilarious film was the most “nuanced” and “accurate” depiction of her life-experience that she’s seen. She explained that as a “trans-racial Asian American adoptee” herself, it really hit home:

In my life I’ve experienced racism, assumptions from all sides, from non-Asians, from other Asian Americans, from Asian people in Asia. I know what it’s like for certain people to see me as white and others to see me as foreign. And I know what it’s like to have certain friends push me to find my biological parents when I don’t know if that’s something I really want to do. The movie touches on all of that. It doesn't do it in a preachy way, which I appreciated, it’s in a funny way. It doesn't show a perfect happy ending either, which I really appreciate, because, what is a happy ending in this situation? And they don’t try to show or tell us what that is supposed to be.

While the film is raunchy as heck, and should 100% be on the list of R-rated comedies that really earn said rating, it also packs a deep message, one that tons of people can relate to. So, seeing a story like Audrey’s play out on a big screen in a silly yet meaningful way is incredibly powerful.

There’s something so refreshing and empowering about seeing a comedy made by women that doesn't hold back and really leans into the silly. Joy Ride does exactly that while also showing audiences the power of female friendship and being truly seen for who you are, which is why it’s such a wonderful film.

Regrettable tattoos are just too fun of a concept for comedies not to explore every once in a while. Remember when Ed Helms’ The Hangover character got a Mike Tyson tattoo? Sure, it caused an entire copyright lawsuit, but it was a hilarious bit. Well, now Joy Ride takes the cake on tattoo jokes, and star Stephanie Hsu had a bit of an emotional journey knowing that her character would have it in the movie.

The Everything, Everywhere All At Once Oscar nominee plays Kat, an old college friend to Ashley Park’s Audrey, who is the star of a Chinese TV show and even engaged to her co-star. But best friends know each other’s deepest and darkest secrets, and Audrey lets slip to the group traveling with her that she has a vagina tattoo. It’s a piece of information that endlessly entertains Audrey’s other best friend Lolo, as she imagines what it could possibly look like. Later in the film, when the group cover Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “WAP” in an effort to travel out of China without passports, Kat’s tattoo accidentally is revealed not only to the group of friends, but to the world via livestream. It’s a tattoo of a devil that doesn’t stop on the outside of her body.

When CinemaBlend sat down with Stephanie Hsu during the Los Angeles press day for Joy Ride, she shared her reaction to learning of the tattoo. In her words:

I almost wish I had thought about it more because I just, I had no perception. Sometimes I make things and I just don't realize how widespread it becomes. And so, when I read it I was like, ‘Oh, that's so funny. Of course. Duh, hilarious, unhinged’. And then all of a sudden we wrapped shooting, or even maybe when we were filming it and I met my body double and I saw the artwork on her body and I was like, ‘Wow, we're really doing this, this is pretty wild.’ But now I honestly feel like it, it just is such an amazing reveal and it's so satisfying and it's so fun. So, I feel happy for it.

As one might expect, the actress has a good sense of humor about the whole thing. While she shared that she does wish she thought it through a bit more looking back, and it really didn’t click for her until she saw the tattoo in real life as modeled by a body double in the movie. It’s such a random scene for Joy Ride, and the fact that it exists in the movie is rather jaw-dropping and graphic. We’re not surprised that the actress had a tad of trepidation for the whole thing, but as she said, it’s a seriously “amazing reveal” that has had tons of theaters exploding with laughters about it.

Stephanie Hsu just came off a huge year thanks to Everything, Everywhere All At Once’s success. The indie movie earned Best Picture at the 2023 Oscars among seven wins across its 11 nominations, including a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Hsu. Where Joy Ride's Director Would Like To Set Joy Ride 2

I don’t know about you, but after getting to know the four friends of Joy Ride, I’d be excited to watch more of their chaotic vacations together in a sequel or two beyond one of the most hilarious titles among 2023 new movie releases. The raunchy comedy brings together an unlikely comedy ensemble that I’d follow to new destinations. But if there was going to be a Joy Ride 2, where should Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu’s characters travel to next, and who else should star?

When CinemaBlend sat down with writer/director Adele Lim, who famously co-wrote the screenplays for Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon before making her directorial debut with Joy Ride, she spoke about the possibility of a sequel. In her words:

We have been so in the throes of Joy Ride and so excited for people to watch it. I can't imagine. But yes, this is a group that you wanna see go on like a bunch of different adventures, maybe Europe.

As Lim shared, the team behind Joy Ride hasn’t exactly been thinking about a sequel just yet because they’ve been putting all their time and effort into making the movie and promoting it. But that being said, the first thing that came to mind in terms of a destination is somewhere in Europe.

Perhaps after the group of friends found each other, they would reunite in Europe for a group trip and something wild would happen while they are en route. For example, I could see Lolo’s artwork really picking up steam with a lucrative art dealer somewhere in the continent, and Audrey and the crew would come along, with Audrey not really believing her obscene creations would gain traction. Something like that, perhaps?

I also asked Lim if should cast more actors to bring into the mix for Joy Ride 2, and she seemed content with her cast as is. As she continued:

In terms of like another [actor] I’d wanna throw in the mix, really our four are total stars. We have Sabrina Wu, who the world has not seen before and is not ready for. So, I just cannot wait to get these four back together again and see what else they come up with.

Adele Lim is right, one of the best things about Joy Ride is how it allows these four actors to shine as leads in a big-screen comedy for the first time. Ashley Park has gained notoriety for her Broadway career and roles in shows like Beef and Emily in Paris, but in Joy Ride, she gets top billing. Additionally, Stephanie Hsu came off of Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All At Once, which scored her an Oscar nomination as well, but seeing her in Joy Ride allows her to diversify her career and see her in a new role.

And Sherry Cola has become known for her role in Good Trouble, but if you haven’t been exposed to the show you might not know her. Sabrina Wu has been gaining traction for their standup sets, but Joy Ride is their first movie ever! We will especially not be getting over the Joy Ride “WAP” cover from all four of them any time soon.

I also asked a couple of the Joy Ride cast members for their thoughts on actors who could appear in the sequel, and they had plenty of ideas. During my conversation with Sabrina Wu and Stephanie Hsu, they threw out Manny Jacinto, Harry Shum Jr. and Bowen Yang just to name a few. There’s a lot of awesome talent in the Asian-led comedy already, but that could be further expanded in a sequel, should it come.

How Joy Ride's Director Landed On Cardi B And Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘WAP’ For That K-Pop Scene

The 2023 new movie schedule is packed full of entertaining stories worth going out of your way to check out in theaters. Although, no other movie but Joy Ride can say it has a hilarious “WAP” cover performed by its leading cast just minutes before leaving its audience wiping away tears. But, what is the origin story of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s viral 2020 collab finding its way into the movie? Director Adele Lim spoke to CinemaBlend about how she got the rights to the song for the R-rated comedy.

Adele Lim’s wishes to have “WAP” in Joy Ride weren't simply for laughs or shock value. Here’s what the director told us about scoring the song:

Me and the writers, we realized we were telling a story that's exuberant, that's fun, that's about sexual female empowerment. And we were obsessed, obsessed with WAP, like obsessed. And, it was two weeks before shooting and everybody said, ‘There is no way you're gonna get this song’. And so, I wrote a letter to Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion and the producers of WAP. And, you know, talking about what this meant to me personally, what this meant for our movie – even though we're this crazy R-rated raunchy comedy, it comes from a real place about women kind of owning and celebrating their sexuality. And nothing said that better in a song than WAP. And, they said yes. So thank you Cardi B and Megan Stallion.

As it turned out, the hip-hop stars were totally on board with their hit song receiving a cover in Joy Ride. As Adele Lim shared in our interview, it was a shot in the dark when she decided to write them a letter. However, thanks to her genuine reasons about why the song should be in the film, she got a “Yes” from Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion. When I asked the director whether the singers have seen the movie itself, here’s what she told us:

I don't know if they’ve seen the movie yet. If you're out there watching Cardi, Megan, you know, I'll hook you up.

Joy Ride follows an unlikely group who find themselves on an epic journey in China when Ashley Park’s character Audrey's business trip goes sideways. In a desperate attempt for the four of them to catch a ride out of China, the foursome finds themselves having to convince airport security they are a famed K-pop group called Brownie Tuesday. And yes, the song they cover is “WAP.” It’s a fun scene, and we can’t imagine it being any other song.

During the Joy Ride Los Angeles press day, we also asked Ashley Park about her Gollum impression. Stephanie Hsu also recalled filming the “WAP” scene on set, saying this:

That was a long, hard day. We had to film a lot, and then the choreography was intense. We were filming Monday through Friday as you usually do, and then we were rehearsing on our Saturdays. So it was like a huge kind of culmination and we had to get a lot done in a really short amount of time, but we had a really good time.

Joy Ride, which once had a NSFW title to match its raunchy spirit, has been hailed by critics as one of the funniest movies of the year. Critics Have Seen Joy Ride, And They Seem To Agree On The Raunchy Road Trip Comedy

There have been plenty of family-friendly options in theaters this summer, and that’s great-- especially for people trying to keep the kids occupied while school’s out. But sometimes you just need a raunchy comedy, and Joy Ride is aiming to help fill that void on the big screen. Starring up-and-coming actor Ashley Park and directed by Adele Lim (screenwriter for Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon), Joy Ride was released July 7, and the critics all seem to agree that the leading quartet brings a hilarious mix of spicy humor and emotional stakes to the movie.

Along with Ashley Park, Joy Ride stars Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu as the group of friends who journey to China in search of Audrey’s (Park) birth parents, certainly engaging in scenarios both emotional and filthy over the course of its 95 minutes. Let’s see what people are saying, starting with Monica Castillo of RogerEbert.com. The critic rates it 2.5 out of 4 stars, comparing it to Girls Trip in terms of outrageous behavior, and saying the audience's lasting impression will depend on their stomach for this brand of bawdy humor:

While not everything in Joy Ride comes together smoothly, Lim’s movie is plenty of messy fun. It's mostly lighthearted but occasionally profound in what it says about identity and friendships. The stars of the show embrace the outrageous high jinks, enjoying the free pass to behave badly and push the envelope of raunch comedy. For all its twists and tangents, Joy Ride remains unapologetically true to itself and the central friendship that starts us all on our merry misadventure.

Alan Ng of Film Threat rates it 8 out of 10, calling Joy Ride one of the best comedies to come out this year, with heart-filled stories, characters with depth and enough raunchiness to really earn its R rating. The critic continues:

The source of the ‘raunchiness’ comes in the sex-obsessed characters of Lolo and Kat. Lolo says whatever ‘filth’ comes to mind, while the ‘virginal’ Kat, who is not a virgin, is the perfect counterpoint. In fact, the character is a sex-starved celebrity who is really starving. The raunchiness works because Adele Lim paces the humor perfectly in both timing and frequency. The film is packed with jokes but never feels overwhelming. It’s also filled with jokes that work and are appropriate for the character(s) involved.

Justin Chang of NPR compares Joy Ride to Bridesmaids and The Hangover, saying that Adele Lim proves Asian American women and non-binary characters can also bring it in terms of gleefully gross comedy. Chang writes:

If it doesn't all work, the hit-to-miss ratio is still impressively high. Joy Ride may be reworking a formula, but it does so with disarming energy and verve, plus a level of savvy about Asian culture that we still rarely see in Hollywood movies. Director Lim can stage a gross-out moment or a frisky montage as well as anyone. But she also gives the comedy a subversive edge, whether she's pushing back on lazy assumptions about Asian masculinity or — in one queasily funny scene — making clear just how racist Asians can be toward other Asians.

Devan Coggan of EW grades the movie a B, also drawing likenesses between it and female-driven comedies that came before it. Joy Ride doesn’t reinvent the genre, but it’s well worth the watch, according to the critic, who continues:

Gross gags and chaotic debauchery aren't exactly new, and Joy Ride shares plenty of DNA with other female-led comedies like 2011's Bridesmaids and 2017's Girls Trip. Joy Ride is a welcome addition to the genre, if not a particularly subversive one: Lim raises some thoughtful questions about Asian-American identity and the struggle to belong, but any deeper ideas are overshadowed by nudity and absurdist jokes. Also, not every gag works. (Please, a moratorium on scenes where someone accidentally does cocaine!)

Brian Truitt of USA TODAY rates it 3.5 out of 4 stars, remarking that the film is bursting with heart as it destroys stereotypes in a smartly paced and proudly explicit directorial debut for Adele Lim. Truitt writes:

Like last year’s Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once and this year’s Past Lives and Return to Seoul – albeit with more threesomes, tattooed genitalia and slap fights – Joy Ride is a superbly crafted film that centers on and celebrates Asian people and culture yet also is wholly relatable on a wider scale. Everybody’s had an Audrey, Lolo, Kat and/or Deadeye come into their lives, perhaps even akin to the four forces of nature here. And with this group of hilarious stars and thoughtful filmmakers, the hard-R comedy couldn’t be in better hands.

The critics seem to be in agreement that Joy Ride is a ride worth taking, as the movie has garnered a 91 percent Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes from more than 100 reviews. The audience score was a similarly favorable 88 percent, but that number will likely change as more people weigh in. When I say Joy Ride is the kind of movie that has the potential to leave you screaming, crying and throwing up, I mean it. The comedy from writer/director Adele Lim (who co-wrote Crazy Rich Asians) is an unapologetic, wonderful, and unique road trip comedy that’s full of heart and humor. With the four fully committed performances from Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu and Sabrina Wu and a simultaneously heartfelt and raunchy script, this is the kind of movie that made me laugh until I cried and left me with my jaw on the floor. It also had me beaming with joy from the first frames to the moment the credits started to roll.

Joy Ride follows Audrey (Ashley Park), a lawyer living in Seattle, as she and her free-spirited childhood bestie Lolo (Sherry Cola) make their way across the Pacific Ocean to China to close a business deal. As they go on this journey, they’re joined by Lolo’s cousin, the lovable Dead Eye (Sabrina Wu), and Audrey’s college friend/sexually repressed actress Kat (Stephanie Hsu).

While overseas, the friends decide to try and find Audrey’s birth mom, the protagonist having been adopted when she was young, and so begins a wild journey that involves a lot of K-Pop, sexual shenanigans, a drug bust, and a whole lot of other tomfoolery that makes for a fun, raunchy comedy.

Joy Ride fully commits to the raunchiness, and it's fantastic because of it.

Completely shameless and committed to the shocking and hilarious comedy, Ashley Park, Stephanie Hsu, Sherry Cola and Sabrina Wu shine bright when they lean into the outrageousness of the plot. While the performances really sell some of the wild elements of this movie, it's also well-written. Adele Lim and her co-writers made sure to plant details along the way that made the crazy moments of the movie make sense, and that paired with the work of the stars is the primary reason this movie works.

The best aspects of the Joy Ride are on full display when the pals decide to create a K-Pop group called Brownie Tuesday to get past airport security. The scene is hysterical, incredibly dirty and unlike anything I’ve ever seen on screen. You’d think a random music video of a fake girl group performing Cardi B’s “WAP” wouldn’t work, but guess what? It does, and it works so well. It's able to pull this off because the four actors lean into the goofiness.

But while the scene itself is ridiculous, it's also logical within the film. Lim and her co-writers wrote in details early on – like Dead Eye being a huge K-Pop fan and Audrey and Kat’s a cappella background – which made all their actions make sense. It’s important exposition, but it's also never forced; they’re simply silly little details that play a big role later in the movie.

Ashley Park is a powerhouse, and a brilliantly funny straight woman in Joy Ride.

It's been established that Ashley Park is a powerhouse, but now an even bigger audience knows it because of how excellent she is in Joy Ride. A big reason why the outrageous moments don’t feel totally outlandish is that the film is also grounded, and that’s mostly thanks to Park's performance. While Audrey is a lawyer who says on multiple occasions that they need to be “professional” on this trip to China, she’s also wild, sexy and unapologetically herself (all while spending a lot of the movie trying to find herself).

Audrey's journey to find her birth mom is used as the heartbeat of the film, but the character's background is also part of the movie's comedic voice – with jokes about her knowing all the names of the characters on Succession and not loving Chinese food. Meanwhile, this conflict of her not truly understanding where she comes from serves as the dramatic core.

It’s no easy feat to play both sides of this character, and playing the straight man in a comedy always seems like an uphill battle because the character can be perceived as one-dimensional or boring. However, Audrey is neither of those things; she’s a complex, strong, heartfelt and funny woman thanks to Park's terrific performance.

Ashley Park, Stephanie Hsu, Sherry Cola and Sabrina Wu are a perfectly balanced ensemble, which made for a wonderfully chaotic story.

Ashley Park, Stephanie Hsu, Sherry Cola and Sabrina Wu comedically thrive in different ways in Joy Ride, and like their friend group in the movie, it’s their differences that make for a perfectly balanced ensemble. Each character is three-dimensional and the actor playing each one is perfectly cast. When you take four fantastic individuals and put them together, you get magic, and that’s precisely what this ensemble is.

For example, Kate and Lolo have a little feud over who is Audrey’s best friend, and it serves as both a dramatic plot point and a big laugh. This is because both Hsu and Cola have chemistry for days, and they bring their A-games as they both fearlessly play their strong-willed characters.

While the aforementioned “WAP” scene is the biggest example of this ensemble firing on all cylinders, a drug bust on a train is another prime moment that shows off the group's comedic range. While Hsu shows off her physical comedy skills by dealing with the effects of trying to hide drugs up her butt, Cola thrives on quippy (and wildly sexual) ad-libs while gracefully handling her high. Meanwhile, Park’s ability to play a confused woman from both a dramatic and comedic standpoint shines, and Wu absolutely rocks their performance as a fish out of water who will say anything. All of this then comes together to create a balanced ensemble that understands its strengths.

As the title suggests, this raunchy comedy is a wild and joyful trip. While it will likely be compared to other films in this genre, like Bridesmaids and The Hangover, Joy Ride has its own voice, which is why the film thrives on so many levels. At its core, Adele Lim's directorial debut is a gorgeous and heartfelt story of a woman finding herself, and along the way, she and her friends get into some shenanigans that will leave you laughing, crying and smiling from ear to ear as you walk out of the theater.

Celebs In Barbiecore: How Megan Fox, Sydney Sweeney And 10 More Stars Helped Make Pink The Color Of 2023

Life is brighter when there is a little color in it, and that’s especially true when that color is pink. Considering the Barbie movie is one of the more prominent releases on the 2023 film schedule, and many other trends like Y2K fashion and neon colors have been making a splash, we’ve seen a resurgence of bright pink. Well, not only am I here for it, but these celebs, including Megan Fox, Sydney Sweeney, Zendaya and more, have shown their support for Barbiecore and pink becoming the color of 2023.

Florence Pugh

While bright pink has been one of the big colors of 2023, it started to gain traction in 2022. One of the most prominent examples of Barbiecore from last year came when Florence Pugh rocked a bright pink sheer Valentino gown that broke the internet. Following this viral moment, the Little Women star wore the bright color on a few other occasions, and she even went on to become the face of Valentino, where she participated in an ad campaign for a gorgeous bright pink purse.

Sydney Sweeney

Jumping forward to this year, Sydney Sweeney rocked a Barbiecore pink jumpsuit to promote her new rom-com Anyone But You, which is set to come out in December. The velvet baby pink jumpsuit was the perfect outfit for the occasion, and the Euphoria star looked radiant in the Barbie adjacent look. Not only was it perfect to promote her rom-com, it also fit the pink trend.

Megan Fox

Like Pugh, one of the actors who really made a splash in Barbie pink last year was Megan Fox. Both her and Machine Gun Kelly have worn pink on many occasions (as you’ll see later), however, this look was one of my favorites. In this instance, the Jennifer’s Body star went full Barbiecore in an underboob-baring outfit that included cargo pants, pink heels and a giant pink fuzzy bucket hat. Overall, it was giving Barbie, but it was also tapping into some of the hottest trends of the last few years.

Margot Robbie And Ryan Gosling

When the actors behind Barbie and Ken walk a red carpet, obviously they have to show up in style. When Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling rolled up to CinemaCon they wore Barbie-tastic looks that their characters would be proud of. Between the Drive star’s fuzzy pink bomber jacket and “Directed by Greta Gerwig” shirt, and the I, Tonya actor wearing a gingham set reminiscent of her character’s dress in the Barbie trailer, these two were absolutely slaying the Barbiecore look and dressing 100% on theme for their new movie.

Hailee Steinfeld

CinemaCon 2023 really seemed like the place to be when it came to Barbiecore outfits, as Hailee Steinfeld rocked a gorgeous strapless neon pink dress to an event for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The actress, who plays Spider-Gwen among the Into the Spider-Verse sequel cast, donned a look that had the essence of her character, and contributed to the moment the color pink is having.

Queen of fashion, Zendaya has obviously played into the Barbiecore trend on multiple occasions, however, one of my favorite looks from her was when she wore a light pink Valentino gown on the carpet for the 2023 SAG Awards. She complimented the rose-covered gown with millions in bling from Bulgari, and she looked like a Barbie ready to go to a ball.

Stephanie Hsu brought Barbiecore to the Oscars as she cheered on her Everything Everywhere All at Once cast mates who won Academy Awards, and celebrated her first nomination. According to InStyle, the bright pink gown was made by Valentino, as you can see the brand also loves a Barbiecore moment, and the actress looked fabulous as she walked the white carpet in the mermaid-like, ballooning gown.

From the red carpet to street style, Barbiecore has made its mark all over the fashion industry. This has been proven by loads of A-Listers, however, one of my favorite streetwear looks came when Sabrina Carpenter rocked a pink striped tank, sheer neon pink skirt and platform baby pink heels – let’s just say she was giving Y2K Barbie. As Seventeen pointed out the singer/actress really looked like the iconic doll as she hopped between the Spotify Best New Artist event and the Stella McCartney X Adidas Party.

Machine Gun Kelly

Machine Gun Kelly has famously made his brand pink, I mean his Instagram handle is literally Mr. Pink, and his documentary was called Life in Pink, and those are just two examples of his love for the color.

While MGK and Megan Fox have been in a rough patch recently, there is no doubting they are a fashion power couple, and know how to rock a pink moment. They proved this again when the rocker wore a hot pink double-breasted suit with red roses, while the actress stunned in a shiny light pink Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini evening gown, per Harper’s Bazaar, at the Good Mourning premiere.

Of course, Lizzo has also slayed the Barbie pink trend! The singer showed up to the premiere of her reality competition Watch Out For The Big Grrrls last year in this fabulous bright pink Valentino mini dress, per her Instagram. Even her pose is giving Barbie energy. Overall, this wonderful singer absolutely killed the Barbiecore vibe with all this neon pink.

Harry Styles

Harry Styles has also embraced the Barbiecore look, especially when he headlined Coachella (and specifically on the night Lizzo was his guest). The “As It Was” singer looked absolutely amazing in his big pink fury jacket and matching metallic pants and vest. As he rocked out in the desert he had the perfect look to compliment it, and he showed us all that he really knows how to kill a pink fit.

Rocking a bright pink Zuhair Murad gown to the 2023 SAG Awards, Jessica Chastain took home her award in style dressed to the nines in an elegant Barbiecore look. Women’s Wear Daily noted the gorgeous off-the-shoulder gown and the Gucci jewels she complimented the dress with. Overall, it was an ensemble that tapped into the opulence of the awards, while also playing into the Barbie pink trend.

As you can see, these celebs have all had completely different takes on Barbiecore, and have rocked pink in so many fun and new ways. So, as Barbie’s release date gets closer (mark your calendars for July 21) I’m positive we’ll have even more fabulous pink looks from more celebs.

The Fall Guy: An Updated Cast List Including Ryan Gosling And Emily Blunt

The 2024 movie schedule is filled with some awesome titles, many of which are serious blockbusters. A feature that’s sure to make an impression on cinema buffs is The Fall Guy, which we know a bit about at this point. It’s an action thriller, which sees Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt in the two leading roles. They’re not the only notable names in the mix, though, as the cast features several other famous faces, all of whom we’re going to discuss.

Based on the ‘80s TV show of the same name starring Lee Majors, the movie was originally conceived as another vehicle for Dwayne Johnson, who would’ve teamed up with filmmaker McG. But by 2020, it was reported that Ryan Gosling was working on a similar-sounding project with Iron Man 3 and Hobbs & Shaw writer Drew Pearce and David Leitch, the director of Deadpool 2, Bullet Train and more. The production was revealed to be The Fall Guy in 2022 and, by August of that year, Emily Blunt was confirmed for the action movie. The story centers on a veteran stuntman working with the star who he doubled for (and was replaced by) years prior. And suddenly, said actor disappears. Given that the cast has now been filled out, it’s only right that we make note of the rest of the stars. Now, let’s get to it:
