If there’s one TV show set I’d love to be on the most, it would absolutely be Only Murders In The Building. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez always look like they are having the best time making the comedy, and this was further proven when a wonderful moment from the set had Selena Gomez performing The Greatest Showman to her cast members like she was alone in her bedroom. What’s even better is Hugh Jackman took notice.

Gomez and the entire Only Murders in the Building cast and crew are currently shooting Season 6 in London, hopefully ahead of it being added to the 2026 TV schedule later in the year. Check out this cute moment with Selena Gomez that Steve Martin shared over on Instagram:

The star of The Greatest Showman who belted out many of movie musical’s memorable (and rankable) songs like “The Other Side” and “A Million Dreams,” gave Selena Gomez some props for how she performed the song while goofing off on the set of Only Murders In The Building. He even made sure the movie’s songwriters Pasek and Paul took a look as well. Here’s how Gomez replied to Martin’s post:

“Never Enough” is performed by Rebecca Ferguson’s character of Jenny Lind in the 2017 movie that also stars Zac Efron, Zendaya and Michelle Williams. The vocals for the hit song was provided by Loren Allred. We love to see the singer/actress showing her musical theatre kid energy. It’s honestly a wonder she’s never done Broadway!

I knew Selena Gomez and her relationship with Steve Martin and Martin Short was adorable, but it’s videos like this that only make me love them even more. No wonder they were at Gomez and Benny Blanco’s wedding, cake snafus and all.

But given Jackman’s lovely response, should Gomez go full musical for a The Greatest Showman sequel? Back in 2024, he was open to the idea of reprising his role of P.T. Barnum, but no official plans have ever been revealed. That aside, I need more chaotic posts like this from Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as they continue to film Only Murders.

Steve Martin and Martin Short have been thick as thieves for decades, and it shows. The duo seem to do everything together, from comedy shows, to movies like Three Amigos and Father of the Bride, to their hit TV show, Only Murders in the Building (on which they work with Selena Gomez). They even hosted SNL together in 2022 and 1986. It’s hard not to adore these two together and the hilarity that evoke. Now, Short is opening up about the time when he first met his comedy partner and, of course, effectively roasted him.

During a recent panel in Los Angeles for Netflix Is a Joke Presents: This Better Be Funny with David Letterman, the SCTV alum reflected on his long-held friendship with Steve Martin and the moment he knew the pair of them would be friends for a very long time. It all started when they met for the first time after appearing on Letterman’s show in the '80s. However, they got a proper introduction when they were about to do Three Amigos together. Short explained (via People):

If anyone has seen these two do a comedy act together, or even just interact on a talk show, this sets the tone for their entire dynamic. Short and Martin rib each other relentlessly, tossing back and forth cleverly thought-out insults that never offend. The two are both incredibly self aware, and also respect the art of joke-telling too much to ever be upset by something the other person says. All in all, they are constantly reveling in each others’ sense of humor and watching it all go down is such a joy to watch.

Not only has this humorous back-and-forth been decades spanning, but it’s also been decade defining. Short and Martin have been putting on shows together for years and the schtick still never gets old. The same sense of humor they established together in the 80s can be seen prominently on their award winning show, Only Murders in the Building, which appeals to all ages. They are an absolute delight, and it’s apropos to hear that their friendship started exactly the way fans would expect

Both are absolutely brilliant comedians, so no one ever outdoes the other, which makes their friendship work so well and makes them want to continue performing together. A lot of their close relationship, and more about Short’s life is about to be chronicled in the upcoming documentary Marty, Life Is Short. They have both been a massive part of each other's lives and hearing more about this connection will be such a joy, even if a lot of their story is likely going to be told in jest.

Chevy Chase has been talked about a lot lately due to a new documentary film about his life, and his tendency to sometimes make headlines for allegedly less-than-stellar behavior. This has led more than a few in Hollywood to have negative opinions on Chase, but the actor says he’d love to work together again with a couple of other great comedians, Steve Martin and Martin Short.

Back in 1986, Chase, Martin, and Short co-starred in The Three Amigos, an absolutely hilarious film that sees three actors mistaken for actual heroes and enlisted to help protect a Mexican village from bandits. During a recent appearance, Chase said (via People) that of all his movies, that’s the one he would be most interested in making a sequel to. Of course, one hurdle is that his co-stars are a little busy right now. Chase said…

As somebody who grew up watching The Three Amigos on VHS and cable TV more times than I can count, I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to seeing these three get together again. And while there are certainly some stories of people who worked with Chase not having great experiences, there’s no indication that Martin Short or Steve Martin feel that way, so maybe they’d be up for it.

The Three Amigos is just one of those great comedies. It's one of the best movies of Steve Martin's career, and really, it's one of the best movies in all of their careers. It's full of some of the best quotable lines of any comedy ever made. It's got Martin showing off his trick roping skills, which he learned while working at Disneyland as a kid. It's got amazing musical numbers too.

Of course, since Only Murders in the Building is still on and has a new season on the way, there would be a much easier way to get these three together again, which is to get Chase a guest spot on the show. The series has regularly been able to bring in some pretty big names, either to play characters in the series or to play themselves. It's also already had a Three Amigos reunion with a different actor. Chase seems quite ready for that if the chance opens up. He said…

Chase was clearly having some fun with the comment, but as ideas go, I’ve heard worse. Whether it’s an appearance on OMITB, a legacy sequel to Three Amigos, or an entirely new concept, seeing Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Chevy Chase together again would likely be comedy gold. Somebody make this happen.

I feel confident stating Steve Martin is one of the greatest performers to ever live. From filling stadiums while creating incredible stand-up work to Steve Martin's numerous great films, and his more recent work on the recently renewed Only Murders in the Building, he has wowed audiences for decades. He’s even an accomplished playwright and musician! There’s little the man hasn’t been great at, but it all had to start somewhere, and for Martin, it all began at two Southern California theme parks, Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm.

When Martin was a child, his family moved from San Diego to Orange County, California, and this one simple decision may have changed the young boy’s life. When he was 10 years old, Walt Disney opened Disneyland. The place would change the lives of many, but none in quite the same way as it would Steve Martin.

Steve Martin’s First Job Was At Disneyland

Child labor laws weren’t really a thing in 1955, which is why at age 10, Martin was able to ride his bike over to Disneyland and ask for a job. There also wasn’t much of an interview process. In his autobiography Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life, he explained how he walked up to the front gate and asked for a job, finding himself selling guidebooks for 25 cents each (and keeping two cents for himself from each sale) mere minutes later.

Martin would continue to work at Disneyland through his teenage years. From selling guidebooks, he moved on to assisting in selling trick ropes, then working in the warehouse of Tiki’s Tropical Imports. However, one of the places Martin really wanted to work was at Merlin’s Magic Shop, and at 15, he got the chance:

As a young man, Steve Martin wanted to be a magician most of all, and his time in the magic shop allowed him to learn some tricks, giving him the chance to do some small professional gigs, like performing for local Cub Scouts.

However, his time at Disneyland also exposed him to comedy. The young boy spent a lot of time at Disneyland’s Golden Horseshoe (mostly because it was free, unlike the other Disneyland attractions at the time), where he met the great Wally Boag, the original star of Disneyland’s Golden Horseshoe revue, and, for Martin, “the first comedian I ever saw in person.”

Martin’s Stage Career Began At Knott’s Berry Farm

There’s something of an urban legend that Steve Martin’s first opportunity to tell jokes for an audience came at Disneyland as a Jungle Cruise skipper. This story isn’t actually true. Martin never worked the Jungle Cruise, and the original attraction wasn’t the pun-filled experience it is today. Instead, a different theme park was where Steve Martin honed his standup routine.

At 18 years old, Steve Martin made the jump from Disneyland to Knott’s Berry Farm. He performed in classic melodramas and put together his own performances, combining magic, banjo playing, and old jokes. Martin says his time at the Bird Cage helped him form his act and lose the nerves that came with performing. He explained…

I was about 25 years too late to see Steve Martin perform at Knott's Berry Farm, but the park was still performing classic melodramas at the Bird Cage when I first visited the park. At the time, I had no idea who else had once performed there!

The Main Street Magic Shop (called Merlin’s Magic Shop in Martin’s time) is still there. You can still purchase simple tricks as you could back then. The location still remembers its most famous employee, with an autographed picture hanging on the wall.

The Bird Cage theater also still stands, though it is usually only open during special events these days. They are historic locations in their own right, having stood for decades, but they also played their part in launching a career just as historic.

Many celebrities got their start at Disney. Martin's own OMitB co-star Selena Gomez is one. But Steve Martin may arguably be the first, even if he achieved that stardom in a very different way.

Let’s get this out of the way first: I know that the whole point of Planes, Trains and Automobiles is to watch these two characters annoy each other and get through painstakingly inconvenient situations. However, as I watched it for the first time, there was one scene in this movie that’s considered one of the ‘80s best that just about sent me packing. That’s right, one of the choices John Candy’s Del makes was so unforgivable to me that I’m still not over it.

The Scene In Planes, Trains And Automobiles Involving John Candy’s Del That Disgusted Me

Obviously, everything that could go wrong in Planes, Trains and Automobiles does, and it all happens due to bad luck, terrible timing, poor choices and/or what I’d assume is the universe being out to get these guys. However, one problem I simply could not get over because of how easily avoidable it was, was Del making an absolute mess of the bathroom while Steve Martin’s Neal was showering.

In the short amount of time Neal spends in the shower, Del manages to absolutely trash the bathroom. His toiletry bag explodes on the counter, and there are myriad medicines all over it – including what appears to be Pepto Bismol, a gas medication and a giant empty bottle of mouthwash.

Then, to make matters approximately one million times worse, Del makes the bathroom all wet and uses all the towels with the exception of one (1) washcloth.

Poor Neal was left to dry himself off with a tiny cloth not meant for that, and then he had to try to navigate the wet bathroom of disgustingness to get out. Talk about horrendous!

If I Were In Neal’s Shoes, I Would Have Legitimately Run Away

Now, Planes, Trains and Automobiles is great. I get why it’s one of John Candy’s best movies, and I see why it’s one of Steve Martin’s finest films. However, I’d be lying if I said this bathroom scene didn’t almost turn me off of it.

I didn’t see how Del could redeem himself after this. I know, objectively, he does worse (and life-threatening) things in this movie. However, this instance was the most realistic “mishap” and easily the most inconsiderate moment in the whole film.

A lot of things that happen in this flick are hilariously out of control or quirky issues. However, this one was just gross. If I were Neal, there’s no way I would have stayed in that hotel with Del, let alone shared a bed, let alone continued this trip.

I would have, I kid you not, run away if a person I just met and agreed to share a hotel with because we were stuck took over every inch of space in the bathroom with their icky belongings, while I was also using the bathroom. That is an invasion of privacy, inconsiderate, and it could have been avoided…easily. He could have waited, and he could have kept the bathroom clean. It’s literally not that hard.

As you can see, I’m quite worked up about this, and haven’t stopped thinking about this very short scene in the iconic movie. However, I stand by it. What Del did was gross, and Neal should have left then. Thankfully, he didn’t, though, and we got a great movie because of it, and they got what wound up being a pretty nice friendship by the end of this deeply unfortunate trip.

For the fifth year running, the talented trio heading up Only Murders in the Building managed to solve an increasingly complicated and convoluted murder, and without any further main-cast fatalities during the finale. Season 6 is now official, and it’ll take the characters across the pond for a London-centric whodunnit. That sounds fun, but it doesn’t sound very positive for my favorite thing about Season 5, which for the first time wasn’t Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez.

Okay, if we’re talking about minute-for-minute time on the screen being funny, I would probably reluctantly put Charles, Oliver and Mabel at the top. It’s impossible not to laugh at Martin and Short’s faux antagonism. But I’m throwing all the flowers and applause and handmade accolades at Nicky and Sofia Caccimelio’s five sons — Whoa! Hey! — for collectively being the biggest highlight of Season 5 in my eyes. Oh!

Season 5 Has Been Only Murders' Most Cartoonish, And The Caccimelio Bros Nail That Tone

This season bafflingly introduced an underground casino existing in the Arconia without any of the protagonists' knowledge, while also suggesting that Renée Zellweger's Camila White was able to redecorate a room in the literal blink of an eye. I thought I might bump against such a blatant lack of realism, but I'd settle for any precedent that allows for the Caccimelios to exist. To lay them all out there — Hey-o! — here's the all-star lineup:

• Dane DiLiegro (Former pro basketball player in Italy, Imaginary, Prey) as Johnny Caccimelio
• Shea Buckner (Olympian in water polo, Survive the Night) as Tony Caccimelio
• Aaron Dean Eisenberg (Power Book II: Ghost, The Iron Claw) as Braden Caccimelio
• Cory Jeacoma (Power Book II: Ghost, 4400) as Mikey Caccimelio
• Evan Mulrooney (Fargo, Dexter: Resurrection) as Vinny Caccimelio

Admittedly, I have only a passing knowledge of some of the actors, and zero knowledge of others, so I was initially surprised to see anyone but A-listers filling in guest spots, but holy meatballs, these guys! Every second they're on the screen is upper-echelon comedy, to the point where they overshadow just about everyone else's performances, albeit in small, compact doses.

These gents are "knucklehead putzes" personified, and it seems like Sofia and Nicky's DNA did not mesh together very well. It's hilarious that they just kept at it for another four attempts. The stereotypes are laid on so thick that they're a spoof-worthy bunch, and even just their background conversation din was enough to get me giggling every time, especially when balanced against everyone else's more realistic performances.

Whoa, Hey, One Of The Caccimelio Brothers Made A Big Impact Beyond The Comedy

I would have been perfectly pleased all around if Only Murders in the Building merely utilized these five actors for wholly comedic purposes. It would have worked. But thankfully, it wasn't just limited to their wildishly immature dialogue. Also thankfully, they weren't directly involved in anyone's murder.

Instead, Evan Mulrooney's Vinny hit it off with the core trio's fourth wheel Howard, and not just in an "only friends in the building" kind of a way. Their laundromat flirting seemingly blossomed into a full-blown romance, as shown during the "Three Months Later" epilogue before the Season 6 mystery reared its curly red head.

Even if it doesn't last, at least Howard has a legitimate method to take himself far beyond the point in life where he lovingly lusted after a robot doorman. Plus, this is a better love story than Mabel and Jay's doomed tryst.

But I hope it DOES last, since dating Howard would almost definitely mean VInny would be back on Only Murders on a regular basis. Granted, that wouldn't necessitate all the siblings coming back, but don't break up my guys! Come on! My guys!

So despite feeling a bit more wary than usual about enjoying a new season at the Arconia, I couldn't be more appreciative for this quintet of innocent dummies. I dunno if I could deal with a whole spinoff based on these guys, but maybe a series of post-credits sequences. For now, Season 6 or bust!

On Saturday morning, it was revealed that Oscar-winner Diane Keaton had died at the age of 79. The news about the actress who starred in massive movies like Annie Hall and First Wives Club has led to an outpouring of tributes from Hollywood actors who loved her. Many of them, including Bett Midler, Steve Martin and more, had their own experiences working with her on the set of her iconic movies and called her a personal friend.

We’ll start with Bette Midler, who starred with Keaton in The First Wives Club back in 1996. She was quick to go on Instagram to say this:

The First Wives Club is such a quotable movie, and we’ll never forget Diane Keaton’s performance in it.

Another one of Keaton’s famed co-stars is Steve Martin, whom she was in the Father of the Bride movies with, and he paid tribute to her in a fittingly funny way. Here’s what he wrote shortly after news of her passing:

Keaton and Martin reunited with their Father of the Bride cast back in 2020 for charity, and seemed to be close. Martin found a lighter way to remember the talented actress, as we’d expect from the comedian.

Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who played their daughter in those movies, wrote this in an Instagram post:

Along with being in a lot of rom-coms and becoming a great director while still being an actor, Keaton played a lot of mom roles over the years, including in 2007’s Because I Said So with Mandy Moore. The This Is Us actress also penned a tribute to the late star, writing on Instagram:

Keaton is survived by her children, Duke and Dexter, whom she adopted in her 50s. The actress never married. Keaton's The Book Club co-star Jane Fonda also took to Instagram to say this:

The late John Candy has been in the news a lot lately. The legend is the subject of a documentary, John Candy: I Like Me, which you can watch with a Prime subscription starting this weekend, and a new biography, John Candy: A Life in Comedy, by author Paul Myers.

In the book, comedian and friend Steve Martin talks about their experience shooting one of the most beloved comedies of all time together, Planes, Trains And Automobiles. It will come as no surprise that Candy continually cracked Martin and the crew up on set, and there is one story that really exemplifies why Candy was so adored by millions, especially those closest to him.

It Was A Long Production, But It Never Got Tedious

According to Martin in the book, via People, Candy was always able to light up the set during the long hours and between shoots. One of the things that Candy could do that got to Martin every time is a little reminiscent of a trick Eddie Murphy could do also. Candy would pretend to be in movie with bad English overdubs. Instead of Kung Fu movies like Murphy, Candy used old Gladiator movies. Martin explains,

That’s just one of the many things Candy did to keep things light on set and on film.

They Kept Each Other Sane In Interesting Ways

Martin admits that John Hughes, who wrote and directed the film, had a 185-page script, but that didn’t stop the two master comedians from improvising a lot and coming up with some of Candy’s most iconic quotes. From the story, it sounds like there were quite a few times that things went wrong with the production, most of which was on location. That meant that keeping things happy on set was crucial for the actors and the crew, and Candy always came through.

Throughout the challenging shoot, Martin admits that it was Candy who kept him going with silly games, like fake fighting first thing in the morning to get out some frustrations,

It would end every time in laughter, according to Martin, ensuring that the difficult circumstances of the production never got to them. Martin says,

The chemistry between Candy and Martin is clear to see on the screen for anyone who has ever seen the movie, especially those who have seen it countless times over the years. Hearing these behind-the-scenes stories confirms why we all love the movie so much.

At the moment, one of Hulu’s best shows, Only Murders in the Building, is dropping new episodes every Tuesday on the 2025 TV schedule, and with each week, we get more hilarious and memorable moments from the star-studded cast. However, this week, we got an extra special moment, because Episode 7 of Season 5 featured one of the co-creator's favorite scenes between Steve Martin and Selena Gomez.

A large portion of this episode is based around the billionaires’ game night that Oliver, Mabel and Charles crash. There's a big scene in the episode involving a game of Celebrity, and it’s hilarious because while Logan Lerman’s Jay, Renée Zellweger’s Camila and Christoph Waltz’s Bash kill the game, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez’s characters struggle, big time...at first.

That idea of watching these characters play a simple game delighted co-creator John Hoffman, as he told me during an interview for CinemaBlend:

Hoffman continued to explain that at parties, when you play games like this, “all the guards drop,” and you get to see a new side of a person. That was certainly true for the billionaires, but it was also true for Mabel and Charles, as the co-creator explained:

We also got to learn a lot of random information this way. The game revealed Vladimir Putin bakes an upside-down pineapple cake for Bash’s Labor Day party, Kim Jong Un won’t “shut up about Crumbl cookies,” and that Camila and Xi Jinping call each other Bunny Face and the reason is “just for us,” among other things. Hoffman got a real kick out of all that, as we got to see “those characters loosening up.”

However, as stated earlier, seeing Martin and Gomez play the game was one of his favorite scenes. And I’d have to agree, seeing them panic over the Broadway category and then using Oliver’s ridiculous stories to get the answers was absolutely hilarious, as Hoffman told me:

They really were super loose in that scene! I mean, at the end, Steve Martin jumped in celebration, and Selena Gomez threw the cards up. It was also hilarious to see them recall Martin Short’s character’s wild stories and claims – like he invented both the names Adele Dazeem and Idina Menzel.

Honestly, this scene falls up there with Season 5 highlights that include the return of Paul Rudd’s ongoing gag, any scene between Oliver and Loretta, and the few scenes we’ve gotten between Mabel and Jay that have enemies-to-lovers vibes. It was so fun to see Martin and Gomez let loose and get so passionate, and it was even more fun to see them recall all of Oliver’s wild stories.

So, I agree with Hoffman’s assessment of this sequence; I think it’s one of my favorites, too, and you can go back and watch it on Hulu.

Only Murders in the Building is new on streaming this week, with the first three episodes of Season 5 premiering, which means we get to see the hilarious Steve Martin and Martin Short spar with Selena Gomez as they solve another murder in their swanky apartment building. At this point, they are an iconic pop culture trio, but it’s safe to say the TV show wouldn’t exist without another great trio: the Three Amigos. And, in the newest season, there’s a little nod to the 1986 movie that started it all for Martin and Short.

What's The Three Amigos Reunion In Only Murders In The Building Season 5?

Three Amigos was Steve Martin and Martin Short’s first starring roles together, which would lead to decades of continued collaborations on the Father of the Bride movies, touring together and of course their roles on one of the funniest shows on Hulu that we never want to see end, Only Murders in the Building. In the second episode of Season 5, one of their main co-stars from the ‘80s comedy debuted a role on the series! Tony Plana, who famously played the role of Jefe, portrays the previous doorman in The Arconia, George.

While we won’t go too into specifics about the episode in case you haven’t seen it yet, the episode titled “After You,” and viewers get to visit the past of the Arconia when Lester was getting his start as the doorman. It gives more background on the mystery this season as Charles, Oliver and Mabel try to solve Lester’s murder.

How Tony Plana Was Cast In The Hulu Hit Alongside Steve Martin And Martin Short

When Only Murders co-creator John Hoffman spoke to Deadline about casting Plana, he shared how it came together. In his words:

Short and Martin also had a lot to gush over reuniting with Plana for their Hulu show. Short exclaimed that they “love Tony,” and Martin called the actor an “essential element of Three Amigos” before revealing that he was “very sentimental” about getting to work with them again to play George. Here’s what Plana said himself about getting the role:

In the interview, Plana, who’s also famous for Ugly Betty and a host of roles across five decades, said having the Three Amigos reunion was “big hugs all around,” calling Martin and Short “incredibly welcoming and a lot of fun.” Only Murders has often been called the “most fun set to be on” by all who find themselves on the show, so we’re not surprised Plana had a blast.

Understandably, it kicks off soon after the events of the Season 4 finale, in which the newest on-site victim was identified to be the beloved doorman Lester, and raised those stakes even higher by revealing a second dead body in the fifth season’s premiere. And you just know everything is connected.

For all the fun that I had watching Téa Leoni join the fun as Sofia Caccimelio while catching back up with the core trio, the latter characters stumbled upon their newest groundbreaking mystery in ways that truly bothered me from a narrative perspective. In fact, I think one of those instances exemplifies possibly the worst storytelling sin that can happen in a murder-mystery.

OMITB's Biggest Murder-Mystery Storytelling Sin: Oliver's Dry Cleaner Scene

With a fairly complex beginning stage set for our central podcasters to kick off their investigation, the premiere ends with a fairly predictable shocker for a show like this: the missing husband that Leoni's character wanted the trio to track down wound up being the second corpse. Bobby Cannavale's Nicky Caccimelio was revealed to already be dead the first time we fully see him in person, with his death no doubt connected to Lester's.

But how did Nicky's body get discovered? Was it the result of stringent and unwavering detective work? No. Was it the result of hours of intense stakeouts and scouring over hours of security footage? Mabel did watch lots of such footage, but that also had nothing to do with it.

Instead, the body was found because Oliver attempted to get Lester's hat dry cleaning after hours, and instead of either finding a new dry cleaner's or making a plan to return in the morning, Oliver instead tries the door, finds it's unlocked, and then waltzes inside. Then, instead of leaving the hat on the counter with a polite note and some money, Oliver takes it upon himself to turn all the machinery on so that he can see the rest of Lester's uniform. It seems like he should have been able to just walk up and grab it after seeing the jacket, but he still uses the conveyor.

One of the biggest faux pas that any kind of mystery can make is relying on pure coincidences and baffling character behavior to push the plot forward, and Oliver's actions in the Season 5 premiere align entirely with those forced story beats. If this show took place in the '70s or '80s, I could more easily buy into a neurotic character randomly entering a closed business and futzing with equipment without either getting shot or setting off any alarms.

To clarify, I'm sure there's a perfectly fine plot-related explanation for why Nicky's body was hung up in his family's business like that, and for why the front door seemed to suddenly unlock when Oliver was standing in front of it, and that those reveals are coming in later episodes. But no explanations could possibly justify Oliver's legitimately criminal decision to not-quite-break into a business for personal reasons. I get that he's an unpredictable loon, but impulse-driven coincidences are not a good foundation for a murder-mystery where detailed minutiae is key.

I'm Also Not In Love With Another Big Reveal Being Tied The Arconia's Secret Architecture

As someone who adores escape rooms, I love that Only Murders in the Building can occasionally scratch that same puzzle-minded itch with its twisty plotting. And the premiere dropped a doozy of a reveal by having Charles and Mabel discover that a full-on casino exists below the Arconia, thanks in part to a super-special card deck that boasts a magnetic card with a secret map on it. Because sure, why wouldn't such a card exist?

That said, this reveal also felt wildly coincidental and unnatural within the scheme of things. Sofia giving Charles the deck as a "clue" was extremely baffling, and had Charles chosen to examine the cards while drinking anything but wine, he probably wouldn't have ever realized the map existed. Or if he hadn't been near anything magnetic, he may not have even realized that one card was special.

But sure, I can buy into each of those things happening, since it's TV. However, if the stairway down to the casino was merely hidden in one of the lobby floor's custodial closets, why did anyone need a secret map to figure that out? It could have just said "Broom Closet Near Elevators." Even then, though, I'm questioning why anyone in possession of the key would even need that reminder of where the casino is, considering there aren't many steps required to find it.

I think my biggest issue with this reveal, however, is that it's not the first time Only Murders has pinned a mystery on the Arconia having secret areas that the main characters weren't privy to, despite two of them living there for eons. (I'm referring here to the behind-the-walls tunnels that Jan utilized in Season 1.) As much as I like the idea of a clandestine casino, I don't want this show to already become a parody of itself by just rehashing ideas.

On the one hand, I totally get it, since there are only so many ways to make an apartment complex continue to justify its titular placement this many years into a show's existence. But on the other hand, if the creative team is going to continue requiring viewers to suspend the disbelief with each new season introducing more and more murders happening around Charles, Oliver and Mabel, then they should be able to tell those stories without retreading ground and eschewing logic all at once.

Perhaps we'll learn later in the season from new cast member Keegan-Michael Key that Oliver was diagnosed with a syndrome when he was young that makes him unable to not walk into businesses after closing. But I doubt it.

September streaming got off to a strong start last week with several high-profile shows debuting. Only Murders In the Building, Season 5 - September 9 (Hulu)

Only Murders in the Building continues to be one of the best shows available streaming. That's partially because of its incredible core cast of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, and the fact that fans don't have to wait three years between seasons. Season 5 of the show drops for Hulu subscription holders this week. The main trio will investigate the death of loveable doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca,) who was found dead in a fountain at the end of last season.

Seen & Heard: The History Of Black Television - September 9 (HBO Max)

From producer Issa Rae, Seen & Heard is a two-part documentary that follows the history of Black representation on television. It’s certainly a story that doesn’t get told enough. Also, Shonda Rhimes and Oprah Winfrey are just some of the major media figures interviewed for the production.

Aka Charlie Sheen - September 10 Netflix

There was a time not that long ago when Charlie Sheen was a name that was always in the news, and usually for the wrong reasons. A new documentary available with a Netflix subscription takes a look at the life and career of the former Two and a Half Men star, both his successes and his difficulties.

Warfare - September 12 (HBO Max)

One of the best reasons to have an HBO Max subscription is the platform's deal with A24, as it means unique and interesting films are always debuting. The latest feature from the studio to hit the streamer is Warfare. Written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland, the movie has been widely praised for its emotionally harrowing journey. If you missed this one in theaters, check it out at home.

Screamboat - September 12 (Peacock)

No, you’re not having deja vu. This isn’t The Mouse Trap, that terrible horror movie cashing on the public domain status of Steamboat Willie. This is the other horror movie cashing in on the public domain status of Steamboat Willie, the one that used Colin Jost and Pete Davidson's Staton Island Ferry.

September will continue to go strong on the streaming front. With new seasons of Slow Horses andTulsa King as well as the premiere of the Marvel Zombies animated series, there’s certainly something for everybody.

As Only Murders In The Building’s Season 5 is on the way to be part of 2025 TV premieres, we’re excited to see Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez solve more crimes and rub elbows with more big name guest stars. But with five seasons under the show’s belt, should we start preparing to say goodbye? Martin recently spoke to whether there’s talk of ending the show along with sharing a “motto” that is keeping the show going.

Ahead of the new season, the trio of stars that make up Only Murders were asked by Entertainment Tonight if fans should expect a certain number of seasons from one of the funniest shows on Hulu (and let’s face it, television). Here’s what Martin had to say:

Steve Martin also co-created the show with John Hoffman and remains part of some of the behind-the-scenes conversations (along with Short and Gomez both being executive producers with him). As Martin explained, they really love making the series so much that it just doesn’t make sense for them to move on from it right now. He also said this:

Martin Short also chimed in by sharing how “rare” hit TV shows are, and they are up to stick around as long as they feel like the “quality” is there. While it may seem like there are so many good series out there, not many earn as much acclaim (with the show up for Outstanding Comedy Series among this year’s Emmy nominations) and love from audiences like Only Murders has since it started in 2021. Gomez was nervous to meet and work with the comedy legends that have since become her friends.

Short previously talked about being the most proud that Only Murders has a reputation of being the “most fun set to be on.” It’s clear that even big names love coming to the small screen for the series, including Meryl Streep since Season 3. Christoph Waltz, Renée Zellweger, Logan Lerman, Bobby Cannavale, and Téa Leoni will appear in the upcoming Season 5.

It sounds like Only Murders In The Building isn’t going anywhere anytime soon as long as people keep loving it. You can catch the premiere of Season 5 only on Hulu on September 9, with the first three episodes releasing on premiere day followed by one episodes per week on subsequent.

As one of the funniest shows on Hulu, Only Murders in the Building has been bringing the laughs for four years now. Season 5 will be coming soon too -- hopefully on the 2025 TV schedule -- and I can't wait to see this joyful program back on our screens. With the Only Murders cast consisting of Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, along with many incredible guest stars, you never know what to expect each season. Now, Short has revealed the aspect of the show he’s most proud of, and as a day one fan, I love hearing this.

Short, who plays struggling Broadway director Oliver Putnam, appeared on the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, and he told the former Late Night host what his experience on the Hulu comedy has been like. He praised the reputation that the series has gotten, and he showed a lot of love for Martin and Gomez, as the three have become the most unlikely trio:

Just from BTS content posted by the cast and the way that some stars want to be on Only Murders in the Building, it’s clear that the environment on set is incredible. Knowing how genuine everyone in the cast and crew is really makes the series that much more likable, too.

Along with Short's comments, it’s also clear how much fun the set is through pictures and videos we've seen of him, Martin, and Gomez together. Considering a lot of sets have a completely different vibe, as the actor pointed out, Only Murders is pretty special, as he explained:

I have to imagine that this positive energy is part of the reason Only Murders has been on for so long. Due to the fact that the cast has so much fun making this show, that positive energy comes across on screen, which makes the viewing experience even more delightful. The fact that the series has such a great reputation just shows what kind of production it is, and I absolutely love it.

That being said, it’s also nice that it’s so fun on set because not everything on the show is so fun, like when a character is actually murdered. But being a comedy, Only Murders knows how to make it entertaining, even if they've killed off a beloved character such as Jane Lynch’s Sazz. Overall, though, Only Murders is fun both on-screen and off, and it’s one of my favorite things about the show.

Meanwhile, there isn’t a premiere date for Only Murders Season 5 yet, but the wait will be worth it. Fans can likely expect more videos and photos to come out of filming, as it was recently completed. Hopefully, that also means new episodes will be available for those of us with a Hulu subscription sometime soon. In the meantime, I'll be basking in the fact that this is such a lovely series to make.

As a wonderfully told father-son story with gut-busting gags and a banging soundtrack, I genuinely believe that 1995’s A Goofy Movie, in which the classic Disney character (voiced by Bill Farmer) takes the reluctant Max (Jason Marsden), on an ill-fated road trip, is one of the best Disney animated movies of all time. Thus, I was deeply surprised to learn from a new documentary called Not Just a Goof that the film was not well received in the 1990s and was not a huge hit at the box office, either.

However, even that is not the most shocking revelation from the new 2025 movie (now available with a Disney+ subscription), which covers the filmmakers’ struggle to ensure their vision for Goofy's first feature was fully realized. One such roadblock was a suggestion to bring in an otherwise beloved comedy legend to play the title role.

Jeffrey Katzenberg Proposed Casting Steve Martin As Goofy

In Not Just a Goof, director Kevin Lima recalls showing an early cut of A Goofy Movie to Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was chairman of Walt Disney Studios from 1984 to 1994, as THR recalls, and he responded with a surprising note. He felt that longtime Goofy voice actor Bill Farmer’s traditional take on the character (who is not exactly a dog like Pluto, but related to the same family) sounded too “insincere,” as co-writer Brian Pimenthal describes it.

As a solution, Katzenberg (later known as the founder of Quibi) considered rerecording the entire movie with A-list comedian Steve Martin, not doing a Goofy impression but using his natural voice. As someone who adores Martin and his movies, I believe that this would have been a disaster, especially after so many decades of the iconic character’s distinct drawl, chuckle, and hollar, which Farmer had perfected. Luckily, the director came up with a plan.

Kevin Lima Convinced Katzenberg To Rerecord The Movie With Bill Farmer's Real Voice

Lima recommended that, before giving Martin a call, Katzenberg should allow him to rerecord the movie with Farmer using his natural voice this time. The actor was not happy with the idea, and even recalls in Not Just a Goof losing sleep over how audiences might react to not hearing Goofy sound like Goofy.

However, Lima assures in the doc that the entire rerecording process was all a ploy to convince Katzenberg that making A Goofy Movie without the signature voice was not among his better ideas. Thankfully, after being shown a new cut featuring Farmer without the impression, Katzenberg came to realize that he was wrong, and Goofy remained Goofy.

You know, this was not even the first time that Katzenberg ruffled feathers with a Disney movie voice actor, as Robin Williams refused to reprise Genie in the first Aladdin sequel because the exec tried to stop him from starring in Ferngully: The Last Rainforest. At least his bizarre idea of casting Steve Martin as Goofy did not go through, or A Goofy Movie’s popularity might not have endured over the past 30 years.

Tina Fey has been in the comedy world for a long time. From her start doing improv in Chicago, to being a cast member and head writer at Saturday Night Live, to 30 Rock and beyond, the Emmy winner has become an icon of the genre. Even with her success, she’s never shy to credit others who helped shape her career like Lorne Michaels or Amy Poehler. Now, Fey has revealed a quip by Steve Martin that has stuck with her in both positive and negative ways, and how it shaped her view on public appearances.

The SNL Five-Timer sat down on Amy Poehler’s new podcast, Good Hang, to promote her new Netflix show, The Four Seasons. The two comedy legends chatted about their changing perspectives as they’ve become prominent figures in their field and told stories about their SNL days and other creative projects. Fey specifically mentioned Steve Martin and how the comedian shaped her view on comedy, and how one interaction with Martin on SNL became a prominent memory because of how it impacted her attitude towards performing. She said:

This echoes a school of thought that a lot of comedians have talked about over the years. When the public has a certain viewpoint of a comedian and their on-stage persona, they likely expect them to be in that zone all the time, whether it’s meeting them in person or seeing them on a talk show. They are always expected to be funny and charming, and if they present differently, or jokes don’t land, it can negatively impact their career.

Fey pointed out that this differs from what is expected of actors on talk shows, who can skate by a bit easier. She explained:

This is definitely a lot of pressure, and admittedly an unfair expectation especially when someone is just being interviewed.

However, it also makes a lot of sense. If you are on a talk show promoting a comedy special or stand-up tour, audiences want to think you’re funny so they check out your project. It’s why a lot of comedians will try to integrate their stand-up jokes into a talk show conversation to enhance the segment. People expect less from actors who are promoting a project that isn't based on their personal sense of humor.

While this was probably an off-the-cuff remark after one of Martin’s many SNL appearances, it clearly struck a chord with the 30 Rock star, who seemingly has been thinking about this for years.

Even if it has “haunted her” as she claims, you would never know it based on her own talk show appearances over the years. Fey is always witty, charming, funny, and seemingly relaxed in the environment. Like Martin, she “kills” every time, and it seems effortless, even though it likely requires much more brain power than it appears.

The Only Murders in the Building's star's words to the Mean Girls writer may have been chilling to hear, but it's clearly worked. Fey’s comedy career has flourished since she got this piece of advice all those years ago.

For the longest time, Father of the Bride has been one of my favorite movies. Even as a kid, watching George Banks (one of the best on-screen dads) lose his mind and turn into a neurotic mess as he prepares to walk his daughter down the aisle was something that made me laugh more than just about anything. But I recently watched the iconic wedding movie for the first time as a parent, and the experience had quite an impact on me.

No, I still love the movie. There’s nothing that could change that. But watching George trying to come to terms with the fact that his daughter is no longer the little girl who once depended on him or always down for a quick game of pick-up basketball made me come to a startling realization, one that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since. Allow me to explain…

Watching The Movie As A Father Of Two Daughters Was A Different Experience Entirely

The last time I watched Father of the Bride was when my wife and I were expecting our first child a decade ago. I remember watching the movie and thinking what it would be like to go through a child getting married and how that relationship would change. I’m still years away from walking my two daughters down the aisle (many, many years, I hope), but revisiting the 1991 Charles Shyer classic with my girls next to me led to a whole new experience, and it actually made the all-time great romantic comedy even better.

During previous viewings, I was solely focused on George Banks’ journey as he went from a somewhat successful and centered basketball shoe manufacturer to a mess of a man over the course of six months. But this time around, I was more focused on the bond shared by George and his daughter, Annie Banks (Kimberly Williams-Paisley). I kept picturing myself in George’s shoes and trying to get into the mindset of what it’ll be like to come to terms with my kids growing up one day.

It's A Good Reminder That I Need To Stop Taking My Kids' Childhoods For Granted

But the biggest takeaway I have after watching Father of the Bride for the first time as a parent is that the movie is a good reminder that I need to stop taking my kids’ childhoods for granted. A lot of parents whose kids have grown up, moved out of the house, and got married have told me that they would give anything to be where I’m at right now. And after watching George Banks go crazy over a $250/head wedding, have emotional conversations with his daughter, and try to make sense of an existential crisis, I get it.

I need to slow things down and make the most of my time raising my kids before they grow up, take a hyphenated last name, and start calling me by my first name. I’m sure a lot of parents are this way, but oftentimes, I miss the forest for the trees. I don’t mean to; it just happens, and I sometimes forget the big picture.

Also, All The Scenes With A Young Annie Banks Really Got Me This Time

It doesn’t help that my daughters look a lot like the various versions of Annie Banks in Father of the Bride, but those flashbacks and daydream sequences where he’s speaking with his daughter as a 3-year-old, a 7-year-old, and a 12-year-old got me this time. Having kids around all of those ages added so much weight to those great albeit brief scenes, and it really drove home the “Slow down and enjoy the ride” feeling that I talked about just earlier.

Father of the Bride is currently streaming for anyone with a Disney+ subscription (and a Hulu subscription if you have the bundle). However, I don't think I'm ready for Father of the Bride Part II and all its life lessons.

SNL 50 was a night of laughter and surprises. The old guard met the new guard, as the historic show saluted some of the names that made Saturday Night Live legendary and honored one of the best sketch comedy shows of all time. Lorne Michaels pulled out all the stops for the 50th, big names like Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, and Bill Murray in attendance, and new stars like Marcello Hernández and Sarah Sherman were incorporated into the event as well. It truly was a night to remember but, unfortunately, shortly after it, a number of attendees got sick, including Whoopi Goldberg.

She was absent from The View this week because of that illness, and Steve Martin revealed that Martin Short got COVID after the event. Now, many are calling back to Colin Jost’s Weekend Update joke, which seemed to predict the situation.

Steve Martin Announced That Martin Short Got COVID After Attending SNL 50

This all seemed to start with an Instagram post from Steve Martin, who announced yesterday that he and Martin Short had to reschedule some of their shows because Short had tested positive for COVID-19.

He also revealed that Maya Rudolph tested positive shortly after the SNL 50 festivities, which she was a huge part of. Martin hilariously revealed this news along with a photo of Short and Rudolph sharing a chaste kiss on the SNL red carpet, jokingly suggesting this was where the COVID was exchanged. He captioned the photo:

Martin connected the dots between the COVID Short and Rudolph came down with and SNL 50. However, they're not the only ones who got sick after the show, Whoopi Goldberg had to step away from The View this week because she had the flu.

Whoopi Goldberg Got The Flu After SNL 50

Whoopi Goldberg, who was present at Saturday Night Live’s 50th celebration too, also was revealed to be sick in the week following the festivities. According to Entertainment Weekly, the comedian was missing from The View for two days this week because she had the flu.

It wasn't suggested that she caught the illness at SNL 50, as Steve Martin did with Martin Short, yet this coincidence is notable, especially considering how many people were in the small 8H studio at 30 Rock for the show. They were also all present at the incredible SNL Homecoming concert, which took place two days before.

The flu circulating the events, in addition to COVID, is certainly possible, and Colin Jost even mentioned that during the special's Weekend Update.

Colin Jost's Weekend Update Joke Seemed To Predict This

This whole pattern of illness seems to have been called early by long-running Weekend Update anchor Colin Jost, who made a joke about the situation during his segment of the anniversary broadcast.

He noted the number of illnesses going around New York City, and the irony of having many living legends over the age of 60 in attendance for the 50th celebration, saying:

The joke resulted in a pretty big laugh but, considering how many entertainers became ill after the event, many of which we probably don’t yet know about, it feels pretty ominous now.

The irony is crazy, but it also goes to show that illness spreading in such a tight studio is certainly possible. You can see the entirety of this joke and others in the Weekend Update clip below:

Hopefully, no one is too sick and all of these beloved comedians and creatives will get better soon. The frigid weather in New York City certainly isn’t helping the situation, and with all the hustle and bustle of the 50th, I wouldn't be surprised if everyone involved needs a chance to recover. Here’s to wishing these stars a speedy recovery, and we all hope to see them back on the small screen and on stage making us laugh very soon.

Many star-studded folks attended Saturday Night Live’s 50th Anniversary, reinforcing the notion that this was one of the biggest events on the 2025 TV schedule so far. With more details about the historic weekend surfacing daily, comedian Nate Bargatze added to the revelatory pile. He shared that he and other major stand-ups–including, but not limited to, Steve Martin and John Mulaney–performed at an NYC comedy club before Sunday’s show. Now, that alone is a crazy detail, however, what's even wilder is the fact that tickets for this show were less than $20.

As we saw, many comedian giants flocked to the Big Apple to honor one of the best sketch comedy shows. However, with a set and somewhat minimal itinerary for the big weekend, what do a bunch of comedians do in their downtime? According a TikTok Bargatze posted, they headed to one of the most well-regarded and iconic comedy clubs in NYC, The Comedy Cellar (it’s known for big hitters dropping in unexpectedly to tryout material).

That's right, theYour Friend, Nate Bargatze comedian revealed that SNL royalty filled out the evening’s lineup and each was as good as the last, as he said:

The roster the 45-year-old listed, included himself, David Spade, Chris Rock, Steve Martin, Martin Short, John Mulaney, and Leslie Jones. It is undoubtedly an unforgettable and A+ lineup. Big hitter after big hitter was likely a dream come true for its audience, especially if they are SNL lovers. I know I would’ve been on another level to see them all in one evening, and I bet many would have paid a pretty penny to be in the audience too.

To that last point, if you’re wondering what it cost to see these comedy heavy-hitters all in one show, the Hello World stand-up covered that detail, too. He shared that he believed the tickets that evening were less than 20 bucks, saying:

According to The Comedy Cellar's website, tickets for Thursday and Sunday shows are $18 while Friday and Saturday tickets are $25. So, no matter what day you are at this iconic club, it's cheap to see comedy. However, this audience really got a bang for their buck.

What an absolutely amazing show and evening that must have been for those in attendance. An A-Lister show for less than the cost of an NYC dinner that's not a slice of pizza? Talk about a dream come true.

I’m sure it was a great evening for the performers too, and a nice way to break up the weekend, between attending the SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert and the three-hour-long Anniversary special.

Now, as we move on from this historic SNL weekend, it’ll be exciting to see who gets added to the upcoming hosts and musical guests, post-Shane Gillis, Tate McRae and Lady Gaga. Hopefully, it continues to give the same energy as this comedy club evening, the reunion and the first half of Season 50.

Overall, if there's a moral to this story, I think it’s safe to say, thanks to Nate Bargatze, that if you’re in New York City for any reason, go to a comedy show. You never know if you’ll catch someone like John Mulaney or Steve Martin for a mere $18. However, if the Big Apple isn't for you, you can relieve SNL's historic events with a Peacock subscription.

However, that’s not even the most exciting news for the Hotel Transylvania actress. Boyfriend Benny Blanco recently proposed to the Disney alum, and her Only Murders In the Building co-stars had some words for the lovebirds.

Anyone who is a fan of Only Murders knows that the banter and caring bond between Mabel (Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short), and Charles (Steve Martin) is part of the reason why the show is so successful. As it happens, the chemistry and relationship between the three stars translates to real life too. To that point, the Selena + Chef host discussed her engagement and work on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and the late night host was very curious as to whether Blanco had asked her “TV dads” for their permission first, to which Gomez replied:

Some people might find that a strange concept, asking your girlfriend’s co-stars for her hand in marriage. But the Only Murders trio have become extremely close over their four seasons together, with the veteran comedians immediately taking the Wizards of Waverly Place actress under their wing.

It’s only natural they would be extremely happy for the “Lose You To Love Me” songstress, so Kimmel seemed surprised when she said Short was a bit miffed. However, she quickly cleared that up, saying that the Santa Clause 3 actor was making light fun, as always:

In reality, of course, he was very supportive. The cast has yet to start filming Season 5 of Only Murders, so the Golden Globes might have been the first time Gomez’s work pals had seen her since the engagement, and they could not get enough of her gorgeous ring. A video caught by someone sitting behind the pair showed the older actor playing with the ring on Gomez’s finger. Kimmel made a joke about the comedian appraising the ring, but really, no one besides Martin Short himself ever knows what he’s up to.

As for her other Only Murders mentor and friend, the “Hands to Myself” singer said that Steve Martin also sent his congratulations, but in the form of an email to her assistant. I have to say, it kind of checks out, in an amusing way. The late night TV host brought up the fact that he probably didn’t know it wasn’t going straight to Gomez, and not to contribute to the stereotype about older people and technology, but it’s probably true.

I can’t wait to see these three TV besties reunited for a new murder mystery alongside whichever A-list guest stars they pull for this upcoming season. The interview is interrupted by the Drive star's childhood bully, Trevor (Kyle Mooney), who challenges him to perform a song from Dreamgirls, dance to Cathy Dennis' "Touch Me," and compare their muscular physiques before admitting that he misses the actor's presence.

United Way (Peyton Manning)

One of the funniest SNL sketches featuring a professional athlete is an SNL Digital Short framed as a United Way ad, featuring Peyton Manning spending the day with a group of children. Quickly, it becomes clear that this fictionalized version of the former Denver Broncos quarterback is the farthest thing from a good role model to the world's youth.

Old Lady Gaga (Lady Gaga)

Lady Gaga proved that she was totally game to make fun of herself when she hosted a 2013 SNL episode, which featured an entire sketch dedicated to mocking some of her most famous radio hits and iconic career highlights. It is set in a future where the world has forgotten about the pop star and her older self, desperate to find a fan, calls up her building's superintendent (Kenan Thompson), who at least can recognize "Empress Beyoncé."

Star Trek Convention (William Shatner)

Emmy winner William Shatner owes his career to the Star Trek franchise but you would think he was not so grateful with the way he treats fans in an SNL sketch from 1986. The Captain Kirk actor appears at a convention, where he urges a group of Trekkies to "get a life" instead of obsessing over the sci-fi TV show that he did "as a lark" back in the 1960s.

Hamm & Bublé (Jon Hamm)

After promoting "Jon Hamm's John Ham" in his first SNL hosting gig, Jon Hamm teamed with Michael Bublé (who was that night's musical guest) to introduce a new restaurant that serves pork and champagne. However, the crooner explains in his musical interstitials that he is being held captive by the Mad Men cast member and forced into helping him with this misguided and pun-fueled idea.

Point Blank (Wayne Gretzky)

The legendary Wayne Gretzky appeared as himself in a number of sketches, and proved to have some surprising comedic timing when he hosted SNL in 1989. One of the funniest moments sees the hockey star appears on a talk show that encourages viewers to call in to ask the guest something but none of the questions have anything to do with him or with hockey and are all people seeking advice for something obscure.

Easter Candy (Michael Keaton)

In 2015, Oscar nominee Michael Keaton appeared as a flamboyant, blonde-haired gentleman showing off the contents of his Easter basket, with help from Kate McKinnon as the seemingly imbalanced Portia. It is not until the very end of the deeply bizarre sketch that we discover the Batman actor has been portraying a highly fictionalized version of himself the whole time.

Bill Swerski's Super Fans (Michael Jordan)

NBA legend Michael Jordan plays himself in a few sketches from his sole hosting gig from 1991. One of the most essential highlights sees the Space Jam cast leader join the hosts of Bill Swerski's Super Fans in a cheer for his fellow Chicago Bulls while wearing hula skirts.

Steve Martin Wants More Money (Steve Martin)

When Five-Timers Club member Steve Martin returned to SNL for his then-record-breaking 14th hosting gig, the comedian starred in a sketch set backstage, where he demanded Lorne Michaels a pay raise. However, the producer insists that he go on or he could be replaced with the one person who was closest to matching his record at the time: Alec Baldwin.

Investigation Discovery Presents: White People Problems (Charles Barkley)

In one of the few SNL sketches starring Charles Barkley as himself with no relation to basketball, he is seen hosting a true crime docuseries. However, instead of covering murders or kidnappings, Investigation Discovery Presents: White People Problems discusses instances of caucasian people reacting angrily to situations that seem completely blown out of proportion to the Black people involved.

Chris' Bedtime Story (George Foreman)

In Season 20, George Foreman starred in a backstage-set sketch in which one-season SNL cast member Chris Elliott asks the host to read him a bedtime story so he can take a nap in his dressing room. We imagine that, if anyone else demanded such a request from the boxing champ in real life, it might not end well for them.

Elton John And The Royal Wedding (Elton John)

Garth Brooks Backstage With Tracy (Garth Brooks)

During his second hosting gig, Garth Brooks appeared in an SNL sketch taking place backstage at Studio 8H, where cast member Tracy Morgan voices his disparaging opinion of that night's musical guest, Chris Gaines. What the country music star does not disclose to the comedian is the fact that he and the rock singer are actually the same person.

Sugar-Frosted Anabolic Steroids (Fran Tarkenton)

SNL has poked fun at how professional athletes often endorse products on many occasions, such as when John Belushi played himself in an ad for a breakfast cereal that was literally chocolate donuts. In the 1970s, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton tried his hand at the topic with a sketch that sees him endorse a cereal that is literally just performance-enhancing drugs.

Fernando's Hideaway (Mr. T And Hulk Hogan)

When actors/professional wrestlers Mr. T and Hulk Hogan hosted SNL together in the 1980s, they mostly appeared as themselves throughout the show. The most esteemed highlight sees them as guests on a recurring talk show bit hosted by Billy Crystal as Fernando Lamas, who goes off script to acknowledge the Hulkster's bouncing pecs when he accidentally laughs in the middle of the segment.

But there’s still no escaping their intense attraction to one another, with it never too clear if Lucy wants to kiss Stephen, kill him, or both!

Shifting from sophomore year in 2008 to 2015, Season 1 revealed Stephen's engagement to Lucy's best friend from home, Lydia, while Bree (Catherine Missal) appears to still be loved up with Evan (Branden Cook), despite *spoiler alert* Evan and Lucy sleeping together in the season finale. With the beginning of Season 2 alluding to a big fallout between Lucy and Lydia, the second season is offering plenty of drama but also more questions that we hope will be answered in a yet-to-be-green-lit Season 3.

Talking about the potential for a third season with DC Film Girl, creator Meaghan Oppenheimer has said: “There are a lot of ideas of what could happen. I think that certain characters definitely deserve justice that I think needs to happen if there’s a Season 3. I think there’s always more story to tell."

Lucifer’s Tom Ellis and Thomas Doherty of Gossip Girl will join the series to complicate things as new love interests. Ellis will play the husband of Lucy's English professor, Oliver, while Doherty plays is fellow student, Leo.

Having adored Only Murders in the Building as much as anyone across its first three seasons, I was appropriately keyed up for Season 4 hitting the 2024 TV schedule so that it could follow up on the shocking death in Season 3’s finale. And while the premiere ep was great — boo on Hulu for releasing only one — it was the second episode that kind of blew my mind, in large part due to Jane Lynch.

Not because Only Murders broke the central whodunnit formula by revealing the killer already or anything so drastic, but because it finally treated its sensational seasonal hook with enough compassion to elicit an emotional response both on and off the screen.

I Actually Feel Grief And Angst For Charles Over Sazz's Death

While the premiere logically had to catch audiences back up with its podcast-hosting trio and others in the Arconia and elsewhere, the follow-up "Gates of Heaven" started to drive home just how emotionally and narratively troubling Sazz's death is for Steve Martin's Charles. (Even if it was an honor for Lynch herself.) To the latter point, her being shot inside his apartment likely means the killer was aiming for Charles, thus putting his public safety in question.

But as a viewer, I was legitimately more engaged by how moved and affected he is by everything that happened. For all that Charles presented as being put-off or disinterested whenever Sazz showed up, his true colors shone through quite vividly throughout the ep. And not just in the way that he's hallucinating Jane Lynch's character, or through his determination to figure out who killed her.

Rather, it comes through in moments when Charles is downright lost and confused and seemingly unsure of how to properly cope with anything. It's the moments when he realizes just how dependable and meaningful Sazz was throughout his life and career, and that he so often took it all for granted.

Even though viewers are still watching Steve Martin and Jane Lynch acting opposite each other, we're essentially just seeing Charles talking to himself, and it's already evident that he may never feel at peace with never being able to tell her how much she meant to him. And that's definitely not something I came into Season 4 expecting to feel.

I Never Expected To Care About Only Murders' Victims, But Jane Lynch Makes It Easy

Season 1, the death that kicked off this whole show's premise was Tim Kono's, and while viewers learned more about Tim as the episodes went on, it wasn't in a way that made his murder an inarguable tragedy. The same goes for the twisty death of Paul Rudd's Ben Gilroy, who was introduced as something of a pompous turd, and only gained a few empathy points as time went on.

Jayne Houdyshell's Bunny Folger serves as the slightest of exceptions, since she at least had a full season to make an impact before being killed off for Season 2's murder. And it's not like Bunny was a blessed angel or anything, so her absence wasn't an exercise in mourning.

But due to the character being a kind-hearted and often selfless talent, combined with Jane Lynch's low-key "aw shucks" performance, I felt more sadness about the titular Murder in that 30-minute stretch than during any other point in this show's existence thus far. It absolutely helps that we see the actual Sazz in Brazzos' BTS footage instead of just in Charles' mind.

I can certainly envision a future where this investigation gets to a point where I no longer feel very sad or mournful about what's happening. But for now, Only Murders in the Building has authentically evoked an emotion that isn't mirth, and I hope Sazz gets justice!

The upcoming fourth season of Only Murders in the Building is almost here, and soon, fans will be reunited with Mabel, Charles, and Oliver. Luckily, Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short have been keeping fans occupied by sharing behind-the-scenes content before, during, and after filming, proving that they are still the most unexpected yet greatest trio on television. They continued to prove that when they were asked about the “demure” TikTok trend recently and the reactions were as hilarious as you’d expect.

The latest TikTok trend is sharing what is “very mindful, very demure,” meaning reserved, modest, shy, cute, anything along those lines. For example, Bridgerton’s Colin and Penelope were not being very demure on several occasions. The Only Murders trio were asked by Entertainment Tonight at the Season 4 premiere who was the most demure on set this season, and not surprisingly, Short and Martin’s answers were far different from Gomez’s:

Of course, Gomez knew exactly what the question meant, while Short and Martin were pretty confused. The former Disney star did say she hadn’t told them about it yet, and it’s probably just the latest trend she had to catch her co-stars up on.

What makes the whole thing even better is that Gomez did end up answering the question, saying that it’s Michael Cyril Creighton who is the most demure as Arconia's cat-adoring resident Howard Morris. Martin even agreed with his co-star, despite having no clue what he was agreeing to. It’s pretty hilarious and as on-point as can be for the aged comedian.

This video just adds yet another layer to why Gomez, Martin, and Short are so great together, and proves their friendship is completely genuine. Gomez shared the sweetest tribute to the SNL vets earlier in 2024 that even included a fun little inside joke, and it melted hearts everywhere. Short and Martin have been rivalrous friends for years, but Gomez is a pretty great extra ingredient for this mix. Despite the age gap, they are all as close as ever, and it’s truly one of the things I look forward to most each season of Only Murders.

It does make me wonder just how many youth-skewing trends Gomez has explained to Short and Martin throughout their time together. Also wondering how many they’ve attempted to try out themselves, even without posting.

I would give just about anything and everything to see Short and Martin try the viral “Apple” dance, but it seems like Gomez may be a bit behind on telling her co-stars everything. It is funny to see their reactions when they are asked about trends because the only reason why they’d be up-to-date on it all is because of Gomez.

Whether it’s Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin or Mabel, Oliver, and Charles, it’s clear that their bond is never breaking. It’s certainly one of the best parts of Only Murders in the Building and one of the reasons why it’s one of the funniest shows on Hulu, and that will continue when Season 4 premieres on August 27 with a Hulu subscription.

Once Kamala Harris announced that Tim Walz would be her vice presidential candidate, speculation immediately began about who would play the Minnesota governor on Saturday Night Live when it returns to the 2024 TV schedule for its 50th season. Fans pointed to comedians like Steve Martin, Jim Gaffigan, Jim O’Heir and more as possible actors to play Harris’ running mate. Now, the Only Murders in the Building star and Parks and Rec alum have responded to the fan-casting in the most on-brand ways.

How Steve Martin Responded To The SNL Dream Casting 

Honestly, Steve Martin feels like a natural pick for this part. In the past, Saturday Night Live has had cast members, alums and long-time friends of the show come on to play politicians – famously, Alec Baldwin impersonated Donald Trump for a long time and Melissa McCarthy reprised her role as Sean Spicer multiple times. Considering Martin is not only in the five-timers club but has hosted 17 times across the series’ run, he has the experience to take on the gig.

Fans were loud and proud about the possibility of Martin joining Maya Rudolph (who will be back to play Kamala Harris) on SNL this season, and of course, he had an on-brand response to it all, posting on Threads:

It feels so on-par of Steve Martin to joke about switching roles with Walz, and it’s even more on-brand because he brought his long-time pal and comedic partner Martin Short into the bit.

Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building premieres this summer, so of course Martin has Short on his mind. Plus, this joke was not only hilarious but a fun little reminder (at least to me) about their whodunnit.

Overall, Steve Martin has the history and comedic skills to kill it as Tim Walz on Saturday Night Live. However, per the LA Times (via Yahoo), he has turned down the gig, saying:

How Jim O’Heir Responded To Stories About Him, Tim Walz And SNL

Jim O’Heir played Jerry/Garry/Larry/Terry Gergich in the Parks and Rec cast. Let’s just say the Jerry energy was alive and well in a lot of reports about the actor being considered as a candidate to play Tim Walz.

CNN posted a side-by-side of four actors who fans had put up as potential Tim Walz impersonators. This included Martin, Al Franken, Jim Gaffigan and O’Heir. Notably, the Parks and Rec alum’s photo isn’t as refined as the others, which is totally something that would happen to Jerry. Responding to that photo, O’Heir took to X to write:

He makes such a valid point, and he did so in such a kind and silly way, much like Jerry would.

Overall, O’Heir is also a good pick for this part. While he doesn’t have the SNL experience of folks like Martin and Franken, Parks and Rec is in the NBC family, and the Jerry actor proved that he could hold his own with comedic powerhouses like Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman and Chris Pratt. I think he’d bring a fun Midwest charm to the part – much like he did on the beloved mockumentary – and it’d be such a great opportunity for him.

At this point, we still don’t know who will play Tim Walz, and we probably won’t until Saturday Night Live Season 50 premieres on September 28. Considering the show’s past with hiring incredible actors to play politicians and the fact that it’s in a historic season, I imagine they’ll bring out the big guns for these presidential parts.

Of course, one constant is that it's never shied away from satirical and hilarious political sketches, which Scarlett Johansson and other stars have been a part of. With the forthcoming historic season and an eventual election cycle ahead of us, it’s no surprise that Lorne Michaels and his team have already tapped Maya Rudolph to reprise her role as VP and presidential candidate Kamala Harris. And, now that Harris has officially named her running mate, fans are throwing out some great suggestion for who should play him.

News of Kamala Harris' VP pick comes only a week after it was confirmed that Maya Rudolph would play “Mamala.” (She'll likely act against cast member James Austin Johnson, who does a scary, accurate impression of former President Donald Trump). SNL needs to find the perfect actors for the two VP candidates and, up to this point, Republican candidate J.D. Vance was the only known person in that regard. Now, as of today, it's been confirmed that Harris' pick is Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. So let's talk about the actors that fans want to see take on the role of Walz on the show.

Steve Martin

After the news broke that Vice President Harris’ had picked her running mate, X User @AdamJSmithGa tweeted that SNL better “Get Steve Martin on the phone NOW.” Not only does Martin look similar to Governor Walz, but he also has SNL experience. Despite never having been part of the iconic cast, he’s hosted the show over 15 times and is a member of the elusive Five-Timers Club. With Only Murders in the Building Season 4 set to become available to anyone with a Hulu subscription at the end of August, Martin should have no scheduling conflicts TV-wise.

The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star is another member of the Five-Timers club. However, he’s not known for his impressions, which would make him an interesting choice for the job.

A total wild-card selection for the role comes in the form of Jim O’Heir. A picture of him as his iconic Parks and Rec character was tweeted by @SirGametime with little explanation. It’s unclear if they want O’Heir to appear as Governor Walz or if it would be a hybrid sort of impersonation where Jim is playing Jerry playing Walz. Honestly, I don’t hate either idea.

John Goodman 

John Goodman rounds out the fan requests. X User @NiteniteMelissa tweeted a gif of the star in what appears to be the Oval Office. The Emmy-winning actor has hosted SNL several times and also has fictional political experience, having guests star on The West Wing. With The Connors set to end on ABC in 2025, his schedule should be quite open, too.

Regardless of who gets tapped to play Governor Walz, the 50th season of Saturday Night should (hopefully) be one of the greatest of all time. And, let’s be honest, quite a bit will need to be done to follow up Season 49, which Ryan Gosling’s infamous Beavis and Butthead skit.

Since birthdays only come around once a year, it only makes sense to go big and spend that time with loved ones. In Selena Gomez’s case, that first involved reflecting on the age-old friendships she’s made with Only Murders in the Building co-stars. Then came some sun-soaked celebrating, complete with an A+ balloon banner with her name in it. Fittingly, her beau Benny Blanco shared some sweet messages and memories about the entertainer, but just as fittingly, Steve Martin’s hilarity stole the show.

Gomez took to Instagram to share a little self-love on her big day, which obviously came complete with tons of adoring comments from her ever-growing fanbase, as well as celeb friends such as Avatar’s Zoe Saldaña, Food Network’s Alex Guarnaschelli, Top Chef host Kristen Kish and more. But you know that top comment belonged to her music producer S.O., who wrote the following:

In the second and third pics of Gomez's Instagram carousel, the chain in question can be seen. It's a jeweled lower-case "b," which is right on brand for the musician. (And a slightly less NSFW gift than what Blanco received after his Dave appearances.) But wait, what if that "b" doesn't stand for either Benny or Blanco, but rather for Brazzos, the faux New York detective played by Charles-Haden Savage, who himself is played by Steve Martin! [Many gasps from the audience.]

That probably wouldn't make much sense, and isn't the kind of assumption that a pro like Brazzos would make, but here's the A+ response Martin had to Blanco's birthday post comment:

So maybe there was a Brazzos chain involved somewhere. Or maybe it was a bike chain. Or even a chain of fast food restaurants...

With the release date for Only Murders In The Building Season 4 only two months away, Selena Gomez offered a hilarious tease about one of the funny cast members joining the hilarious Hulu comedy. While I'm already excited for the return of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez’s crime adventures, the actress has me even more intrigued now because of a funny farting story that involved Meryl Streep and Molly Shannon.

Martin Short is filling in on Jimmy Kimmel Live as host this week, so of course he had to have Selena Gomez on as a guest. While the pair were talking about the upcoming season on the 2024 TV schedule, Short brought up one scene where Gomez was laughing so hard at Molly Shannon that he noticed it in the episode itself, he could tell she was cracking up. Then, Gomez responded with the reason why, saying:

Oh my goodness, I don’t blame Selena Gomez one bit!!

That sounds too funny to possibly not break for. In the late-night segment (on Kimmel's YouTube channel), Gomez couldn’t help but start laughing while telling the story, too. The account is a great tease for Season 4, because Molly Shannon was cast specifically for the upcoming episodes. It has been revealed that the Saturday Night Live alum is playing a “high-powered LA businesswoman who finds herself drawn into the world of investigation in NY.” Here’s what Short said about the sequence:

Per an Instagram post from the series’ account, Eugene Levy is cast as Charles, Eva Longoria is cast as Mabel and Zach Galifianakis will play Oliver in the movie based on the podcasting trio. I absolutely cannot wait to see what bits come from this development in the series! Also, Kumail Nanjiani and Melissa McCarthy are among the cast, however, their roles remain a mystery.

Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building is on the way. We’re just over two months away from the premiere of the new season on the 2024 TV schedule, which will see our favorite true crime podcasting trio trying to solve another terrible murder that happened in their building. As a fan, I’m always interested in behind-the-scenes news, but the latest image is completely bizarre, and there’s only one way I can make sense of it.

The Only Murders in the Building Instagram account dropped a behind-the-scenes image which is as amazing as it is nonsensical. It shows Selena Gomez in a glittery dress that looks like something out of a Busby Berekely musical, while Steve Martin and Martin Short are dressed in full-body mo-cap pajamas. Considering Only Murders isn’t exactly a CGI-heavy effects-driven series, this picture is kinda wild.

Even the caption on the image says it’s “not even gonna ask” because the whole thing doesn’t make any obvious sense, but there is one way that it could make sense. In Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building, we were introduced to the “white room” a place where Steve Martin’s Charles went when he completely lost himself while rehearsing. A lot of weird stuff happened to him when we saw the white room visualized, and something similar could be happening here.

This may be some sort of dream sequence or hallucination. It’s the only thing that would really seem to make sense. It’s possible there could be some sort of plot reason that the characters could end up looking like this. Maybe Martin Short’s character has decided to forgo producing Broadway plays and is now making science fiction movies, but that seems unlikely. Or, it's possible that Steve Martin's character is making a very odd return to Brazzos.

We do know from the Only Murders in the Building Season 4 trailer that was released that at least part of the story will take place in Hollywood, as a studio is going to try and turn the podcast run by the characters into a movie. So the scene may be related to that, but it seems unlikely that the three main characters would actually appear in any such movie. Only one of them has any acting experience, and he’s not exactly A-list.

So, I think some sort of silly dream sequence is the only logical conclusion to draw from this photo.

The new season will follow the Season 3 finale of Only Murders where Jane Lynch's Sazz was mysteriously shot by a sniper. Whether the killer was aiming for her, or thought she was Martin's Charles Haden Savage, we don't yet know. Lynch was "honored" to be the new season's victim because we know she'll be a bigger part of the show through flashbacks.

Whatever this photo means, it will almost certainly be great. Only Murders in the Building has been excellent throughout its run and we certainly hope it won’t stop now. We know the new season will have even more celebrity guest stars than the previous installments, which will lead to many exciting opportunities. Only Murders in the Building Season 4 is set to debut for everybody with a Hulu subscription on August 27.

The highly anticipated release of Deadpool & Wolverine is getting close, and fans can’t wait to see what the creative team has in store for fans. The initial trailer for the Deadpool threequel teased bloody fights, new MCU lore, and of course, an exciting dynamic between Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. There certainly seems to be a “buddy movie” feel to the film, and according to director Shawn Levy, that's by design. The filmmaker recently teased some of his unlikely inspirations for the upcoming Marvel movie, which includes classic comedies like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and now I really can't wait for this flick!

In a recent interview with AP News, the Free Guy director opened up about exciting details for Deadpool & Wolverine. While plot details are being kept under wraps, in true MCU fashion, Levy was able to talk about the tone of the film and the vibe they're going for with this Deadpool film. Surprisingly, the filmmaker looked less toward its superhero predecessors, and more towards comedies with an “odd-couple” dynamic. Levy explained how this applies to the titular characters, saying:

For context, all three of these movies feature two characters with very different personalities who are forced together by unfortunate circumstances. Ultimately, they must work together to achieve a common goal. During their journeys, their differences lead to hilarious comedic moments as well as adversity they must overcome. 

This sounds like the perfect tone for Deadpool 3, which will likely leverage Ryan Reynolds’ dry, crass sense of humor and Hugh Jackman’s much more serious portrayal of Wolverine. It’s a great approach, and I’m so excited to check it out. 

Reynolds and Jackman have a well-documented off-screen friendship and playful faux feud, which also will likely play into this Planes, Trains and Automobiles-style dynamic. Fans have enjoyed this for years through their social media banter, but Deadpool & Wolverine will be the true test of their big-screen chemistry. 

As we learned from John Candy and Steve Martin in their classic 1987 comedy, it’s hard to go wrong when there is so much charisma and comedy at the center of a film. And this Marvel duo has a natural and dynamic rapport that will hopefully elevate the film's comedic and emotional beats. 

There’s not only the hilarious “buddy movie” tone to look forward to. Deadpool & Wolverine also features an all-star cast that includes Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen, The Crown’s Emma Corrin, and Jennifer Garner, who is reprising her role as Elektra. In addition, this will be the first Deadpool movie that's part of the MCU, so fans can expect more plot-heavy details that will likely be integral to the overarching Marvel storyline. 

It has been six years since a Deadpool movie hit theaters, and I love that they are combining so many elements to build upon the raunchy hilarity of the first two films. This is the only MCU project on the 2024 movie schedule, which feels like a lot of pressure. Hopefully, Levy’s “opposites attract” comedic approach ends up grounding the film, taking away the loftiness of the endeavor, and resulting in a genuine crowd-pleaser.

Steve Martin is one of the most successful comics to ever live. He sold out stadiums as a stand-up comic, something few have ever been able to do and has had an incredibly prolific career in films and television. Few would ever question that Steve Martin is hilarious, but the new documentary about his life and career does take a moment to recognize the time somebody asked him why he wasn’t funny anymore.

One of the moments that’s included in Steve! (Martin) the new two-part Apple TV documentary  is a bit with British comedian Paul Kaye, who interviewed celebrities as the character Dennis Pennis, grabbing Martin on the red carpet in 1996 and asking him “How come you’re not funny anymore?” Martin, not realizing at the time he was being ribbed, just turns away, looking quite dejected. Speaking with The Guardian, the comedian explains his reaction, saying that the question hit him quite hard in that moment. Martin explained…

The question was asked on the red carpet for Martin’s comedy Sgt. Bilko which, to be fair, is far from Steve Martin’s best work, and came during perhaps the roughest part of the star's career. It wouldn’t be that surprising if the reviews of that film did have an impact on him. While some stars say they don't read reviews, or claim they don't bother them, Martin admits that bad reviews do hurt. However, he says that claims that he stopped doing media entirely for a period following the red carpet blindsiding are simply untrue. He continued… 

Considering that the documentary, which recently arrived for Apple TV+ subscribers, is designed to celebrate the life and career of Steve Martin, it might be somewhat surprising that the incident was included in the film at all. Director Morgan Neville says that, despite personally feeling the moment was “nasty” he wanted to show the way that talents like Martin’s are judged when they are trying to be creative. He said…

Steve Martin is arguably one of the most creative comics of his generation. He’s done serious dramatic work as well as his trademark comedy. He’s written novels and plays and is an accomplished banjo player. Not everything he’s ever done has been warmly received, but there’s no argument he’s been willing to try just about anything.  If you ever question the man's creativity and ability, there are some great Steve Martin movies out there to show you just how funny he truly is.

The drama appears to live on between Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber, at least in the eyes of their respective fans, who interpreted one of the proud nepo baby’s recent social media posts to be a direct shot at the Only Murders in the Building star. Gomez, meanwhile, stepped out in a gorgeous black number from Oscar De La Renta, seemingly unbothered by the latest shade that involved Justin Bieber (naturally), Beyoncé and a track off of her new album Cowboy Carter.

Any thoughts of past relationship drama took a back-burner March 29, as Selena Gomez supported her OMITB co-star Steve Martin at the premiere of Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces. Check out the fit below: 

The “Lose You to Love Me” singer looked fabulous in the long-sleeved Oscar De La Renta midi gown, which featured an off-the-shoulders neckline decorated with large bows. Her look featured sheer black stockings, pointed-toe Louboutin heels and makeup from her Rare Beauty line.

Despite the premiere coming a day after the latest bout of perceived shade from Hailey Bieber, it was no surprise to see Selena Gomez at the SoHo premiere of Steve Martin’s documentary, as she showed through the sweetest tribute to him and Martin Sheen just how much love she has for her co-stars on Only Murders in the Building (one of the best original shows on Hulu). So what did Bieber post, and how is Beyoncé involved? 

Hailey Bieber (Possibly) Shades Selena Gomez While Listening To ‘Jolene’ 

One of the tracks on Beyoncé’s new Cowboy Carter album is a remake of Dolly Parton’s hit “Jolene,” a song about a woman trying to steal a married man. Hailey Bieber posted a screenshot of the track to her Instagram Stories (per Page Six) with “whew 😤” written over it, leading many to believe she was calling out Selena Gomez for actions or feelings related to Justin Bieber.

No further context was given to Hailey Bieber’s intentions with the post, but Selena Gomez’s fans hit up the comment section of another Hailey Instagram pic to share their thoughts on the perceived diss. They turned the situation around, alleging it was Hailey who had gone after Justin when he was still with Gomez, writing:

The apparent resurfacing of the beef comes a year after Kylie Jenner and Hailey Bieber’s Eyebrowgate, in which the celebs were accused of shading Selena Gomez for over-laminating her eyebrows. That — in addition to another post that many thought showed Bieber suggesting Gomez had “deserved” to be body-shamed over some bikini photos — led to months of online bullying and death threats from fans that Bieber said affected her mental health.

Of course we don’t know what Hailey Bieber meant with her “Jolene” post or what (if anything) goes on behind the scenes between the Biebers and Selena Gomez — who, incidentally, has been dating music producer Benny Blanco for the better part of a year. However, it’s clear that many believe this feud just got reignited.

Production on Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building is in full swing, and our favorite crime-solving trio is back on the case! Easily, one of the reasons why this show is so charming is the friendship that has flourished both on and off screen between the stars Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin. Now, even though the Hulu mystery doesn't have a premiere date on the 2024 TV schedule, the Mabel actor is proving that more of that irresistible bestie energy is coming as she posted the sweetest tribute for her co-stars. 

While we're no strangers to how much these three adore one another, it's always lovely to see tributes like this one. Taking to Instagram, Gomez penned a caring message to Martin and Short, and let's just say there are only hearts in this building:

To me, a reason why Only Murders in the Building is one of Hulu’s best shows comes down to the chemistry between Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. Obviously, we know Martin and Short are hysterical together, however adding Gomez into their little group made everything better, and since Season 1 it’s been clear that she fits in with them perfectly. 

As the seasons go on and guest stars come and go, the bond between these three has seemingly gotten stronger. On-screen, Charles, Mabel and Oliver’s friendship has grown past just crime solving, and off-screen, the three actors frequently show up to support one another – just take Short emceeing Gomez’s charity event as a prime example. Also, as the Mabel actress noted, working with these two has influenced her life greatly and taught her a lot about being “kind, gentle warm and powerful.” 

While Martin Short was initially concerned about working with Gomez, since he’d never met her and was worried she could be “a nightmare,” those fears were quickly extinguished. Now, the trio is an adorably wholesome crew of besties, and Martin and Short even sent their co-star flowers to celebrate Season 4 starting production. 

Speaking of Season 4, there’s about to be a whole lot of love and crime-solving in the building considering how stacked the cast for the fourth installment of Only Murders is. With Meryl Streep returning, we know we’ll get more irresistible Loretta and Oliver moments. Plus, Eugene Levy will be reunited with Steve Martin and Martin Short, while stars like Molly Shannon will bring the funny and all that good SNL energy. 

Overall, things are looking swell over at Only Murders in the Building, and Selena Gomez’s post made me even more excited for Season 4. She very clearly adores her co-leads and sees them as mentors for her, and that makes my heart happy. While unexpected, this trio has proven to be the most wholesome crew, and I could watch them solve murders for an eternity together. 

Luckily, we’ll get to see Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin back on the case soon, as the BFFLs are currently in production on Season 4. Don’t get me wrong, the Only Murders in the Building Season 4 cast is truly stacked! Between Eugene Levy reuniting with Steve Martin and Martin Short, Meryl Streep returning, Molly Shannon joining the ensemble and so much more, this star-studded cast is about to kill it (pun intended). However, I think there’s one comedy legend the show’s missing, and to whoever casts OMITB I hope you're listening, because I desperately need you to get Ted Danson on this show.

Now, I realize this chasting choice feels random and out of left field, but it actually makes perfect sense. Last season Only Murders cast theater vets in tons of roles, and this season they’ve got comedy legends filling the parts of the ensemble, with the likes of Levy, Shannon, Zach Galifianakis and Kumail Nanjiani. This leads me to my point regarding Only Murders in the Building Season 4. If you are going to cast all these comedically gifted folks, why not add sitcom legend Ted Danson into the mix? Not only would he generally be a great fit for this show, but I have also cooked up a fabulous way for him to be involved. So, welcome to my Ted Talk.

Ted Danson Is A Comedy Darling, And He’d Fit Into This Cast Perfectly

Along with his best-known roles in Cheers and The Good Place, Ted Danson has also been part of the ensembles for CSI, Fargo, Becker and Damages (among many others). He’s worked with everyone from Rhea Perlman to Laurence Fishburne to Kristen Bell, and over the course of his wildly successful career, he’s proven that he can take on any role with any cast and kill it.

However, considering the silly goofy nature of beloved comedies like Cheers and The Good Place, it’s clear to me that he’d fit in perfectly with the cast of Only Murders in the Building. 

On top of all that, Danson being in Only Murders would serve as a reunion, because he worked with Martin Short on Damages. Already the Season 4 cast features folks the leading actors have worked with before, like Eugene Levy. So, I can’t help but continuously think about how the Cheers star would fit in perfectly on one of Hulu’s best shows, and after you hear my idea for who he could play, I think you’ll agree with me.

I Have A Great Idea For Who Ted Danson Could Play In Only Murders In The Building

OK, so, ever since the Season 3 finale of Only Murders when we learned about the murder of Jane Lynch’s Sass, I’ve been thinking about the cast of characters that could be involved in her mystery. We know the trio is going to Los Angeles for part of the season, and since Sass was Charles’ stunt double on Brazzos, I can’t help but think that we’ll meet some other people who worked on the procedural. 

Enter Ted Danson.

This hilarious and ongoing gag that Jane Lynch is Steve Martin’s stunt double is one of my favorite jokes on Only Murders. So, why not add another tall person with white hair, glasses and a quick wit into the mix? Since Charles worked on the show for so long, and I presume there was a lot of action required in the series, it seems logical that he’d have more than one stunt double. Ted Danson would be a perfect fit for this role!

Honestly, he’d be great as any character though, especially if they can relate it to the made-up Brazzos as well as the actor’s legendary real-life television career. If this stunt double idea isn’t working, then maybe he could do a cameo like Matthew Broderick and Sting did, or he could play a high-powered producer, or he could just play another guy in the building.

Frankly, while I have my dreams about how he could be involved, when it comes down to it, I really just think Ted Danson would be brilliant in Only Murders in the Building. So, casting people, if you are reading this, please consider my plea. I know the comedy is in production and expected to premiere on the 2024 TV schedule. However, I can’t help but hope that somehow, someway Ted Danson ends up in the fourth season of this beloved Hulu hit. 

The upcoming fourth season of Only Murders in the Building is going to be big. On top of the Hulu hit heading to Los Angeles, the comedy is also bringing on some pretty great stars. Along with regulars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, the Only Murders Season 4 cast consists of some comedy legends such as Molly Shannon, Kumail Nanjiani and Eugene Levy, among others. With Levy being one of the latest additions, and considering that he's reuniting with both Martin and Short, the Schitt's Creek actor is opening up about joining the cast.

Levy is no stranger to working with the duo. He did the SCTV sketch comedy series with Short. Plus, the two of them appeared in Martin’s Father of the Bride movies. Along with those films, Martin and Levy starred in Cheaper By the Dozen 2, playing longtime enemies, as well as Bringing Down the House. Levy expressed his excitement about working with the comedy legends again as well as his enthusiasm regarding the Only Murders’ incredible guest lineup with ET, saying: 

While details about Levy’s role in Only Murders in the Building are being kept under wraps, and we don’t know whether he will be a friend or foe to the trio, it sounds like he is thrilled to be on the show. It’s always exciting when actors do multiple projects together because it shows how much fun they have. Getting Eugene Levy, Martin Short, and Steve Martin back on screen all at once is going to be such a treat.

With Eugene Levy’s impressive filmography and his tendency to work with the same actors over and over again, like Catherine O'Hara, it was just a matter of time before he had another on-screen reunion with a former co-star. While we don't know how his character will interact with Short and Martin, it's guaranteed to be hilarious. 

Other than the fact that Season 4 of Only Murders will center around the murder of Jane Lynch’s Sazz following the Season 3 finale, there is not much known about the storyline and how these new characters will come into play. 

We've learned that Molly Shannon will play a “high-powered LA businesswoman who finds herself drawn into the world of the investigation in NY.” Meanwhile, Eva Longoria’s unknown character will become an integral part of the investigation, but it’s unclear if she is directly connected to Sazz or will play another member of the police force. When it comes to Levy's character, we have no idea how he'll be involved. 

As of now, a premiere date for Only Murders in the Building Season 4 hasn’t been announced, but it will likely be part of the 2024 TV schedule. The wait will surely be worth it for Hulu subscribers, and it will be exciting to see it all come together, especially when it comes to the reunion between Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Eugene Levy.

It’s almost time to return to yet another crime scene at the Arconia, as Only Murders in the Building Season 4 is on the way. The next installment of the hit Hulu comedy will focus on the death of Jane Lynch’s Sazz following Only Murders’ tragic Season 3 finale. Not too much is known about exactly what Charles, Oliver, and Mabel will be getting into this time around. However, what has been revealed is that the plot will move the trio from New York to Los Angeles, which will be the first for the series. Now, filming has officially kicked off, and Selena Gomez and Steve Martin are celebrating.

The two made sure to update their followers on the fact that the new season of Only Murders in the Building has finally started production. Selena Gomez took to her Instagram Stories to mark "Day 1" by sharing a sweet photo of some flowers she received from Steve Martin and fellow co-star Martin Short. This is the kind of gesture I like to see made between co-stars, and you can see the bouquet and accompanying note for yourself below:

The flowers are so sweet and serves as a small indicator of just how close the three actors have become since the first season. Following the end of the actors’ strike, Selena Gomez shared a series of photos featuring Short and Martin, which also shows their camaraderie. And, if you're a fan, then the pics probably also made you miss seeing the trio together. With filming starting, it's not surprise that the behind-the-scenes content is starting up again. With that, the Father of the Bride icon was quick to share a set photo on Instagram, which featured him with his “classmates”:

Unsurprisingly, the co-stars were all smiles as they sat in their chairs while on the set. I'd like to think that they're happy to be reunited and just simply pumped to work following the Hollywood work stoppage.

Even though it’s still very early on in production, it feels so good to see Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez together again. There's no telling what “The Trio” will get into during Season 4, but it’s likely that hilarity will ensue, both off-camera and on. I'm hopeful that more set photos are on the way but, for now, I'm totally happy with the lovely tidbits that have been shared thus far.

They aren't the only ones who are part of the cast of Only Murders in the Building Season 4, of course. Meryl Streep will continue to recur as Loretta, who acting career finally takes off as she continues her romance with Oliver. SNL vet Molly Shannon is joining the Hulu series as well, along with Eva Longoria and Eugene Levy. Fans can also expect Jane Lynch's Sazz to stick around via flashbacks leading up to her death. Those will fall into place as everyone else tries to piece together just who killed her and whether Charles was truly the intended target.

It could be a while before the new episodes eventually drop, and the wait may be hard for Hulu subscribers. Nevertheless, the sheer knowledge that production is in motion and that Selena Gomez and Steve Martin are already dropping sweet little nuggets for us is satisfying for me.

While a premiere date for Season 4 has yet to be announced as of this writing, fans can hopefully look forward to it airing as part of the 2024 TV schedule. The wait will surely be worth it, however, as Only Murders in the Building is one of the best shows on Hulu. In the meantime, fans can rewatch the first three seasons to keep themselves occupied.

If you happen to be a character living at the Arconia or even stepping foot in the affluent apartment building, God help you, because there’s a not-insignificant chance you could be murdered within its premises. But one character’s untimely demise each season makes for captivating TV in real life, as Only Murders in the Building has cemented itself as one of the best Hulu TV shows. Only Murders Season 4 is now in the works, with the mystery this time around focused on who gunned down Jane Lynch’s Sazz Pataki, who recurred in the first three seasons.

Hulu subscribers can look forward to Season 4 premiering on the 2024 TV schedule on August 27, with this new batch of episodes seeing the starring characters going to Los Angeles when a Hollywood studio wants to make a movie about their podcast. More importantly in this case, we do know who will be making up the cast for this next batch of episodes. So let’s go over which Only Murders in the Building cast members are returning for Season 4, and which new stars will be accompanying them.

Which Stars Are Returning From Past Seasons?

Steve Martin

As with the following two entries on this list, it’d be weird if Steve Martin didn’t return for Only Murders in the Building Season 4 considering he plays one of the main characters. That said, it’ll be especially important for Charles-Haden Savage to appear in Season 4 considering that not only was Sazz his longtime stunt double and they maintained a unique friendship, but she was killed in his apartment at the end of Only Murders Season 3. So naturally Charles has a personal stake in solving this mystery, though he’ll still need the help of his true crime aficionado cohorts to get to the bottom of what happened.

Martin Short

Martin Short’s Oliver Putnam is back in Broadway’s good graces following the successful opening of Death Rattle Dazzle in the Season 3 finale, and much of that was him substituting for the lead role at the last minute. It remains to be seen if we’ll see him tackle another Broadway production during Season 4, though even if that’s the case, needless to say we won’t spend as much time following the making of the new play given. It’s also important to mention that Only Murders Season 4 taking place partially in Los Angeles will allow him to reunite with someone we’ll talk about shortly.

Selena Gomez

We found out our main trio of characters with Selena Gomez’s Mabel Mora. Unlike Charles and Oliver though, Mabel no longer lives at the Arconia, as her aunt sold the apartment and she moved out in “CoBro.” It still hasn’t been revealed where Mabel is living now, but obviously she’ll still be spending plenty of time at the building spending time with her older friends as they attempt to solve Sazz’s murder. We also have yet to see if Mabel will maintain a long-distance relationship with Jesse William’s Tobert in Season 4 since he moved to Los Angeles, or if their time together is over.

Meryl Streep

Only Murders in the Building Season 3 saw Oliver Putnam forming a romantic relationship with Loretta Durkin, one of the actresses he cast for Death Rattle Dazzle. Although there was a period where it seemed like Loretta might have been Ben Glenroy’s killer, that fortunately wasn’t the case, and by the end of the season, she was preparing to head to Los Angeles with Jeremy Shamos’ Dickie, her biological son, to pursue new professional opportunities. Well, good news for those of you who enjoyed Meryl Streep’s latest small screen performance, as she’ll continue recurring as Loretta in Season 4. I’d like to think this means that she and Oliver are still together, though it’s hard to tell going off of just the Only Murders Season 4 trailer.

Michael Cyril Creighton

After being a recurring character in the first two seasons of Only Murders in the Building, Michael Cyril Creighton’s Howard Morris was upgraded to the main cast in Season 3. It’s unclear right now if he’ll retain that status in Season 4 or be bumped back down to recurring, but either way, Howard will be back! Season 3 saw him working as Oliver’s assistant during the making of Death Rattle Dazzle., and we also learned how he had acting aspirations in his younger years. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like he’ll be traveling to Hollywood with Charles, Oliver and Mabel, so no auditions in Tinsel Town for him.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph

Every case in Only Murders in the Building has involved Detective Donna Williams in one form or another, and that won’t be changing in Season 4. While we don’t know yet if Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s character will be first on the scene to investigate Sazz Pataki’s death or if she’ll come into the proceedings later on, one thing we can count on is her getting fed up with Charles, Oliver and Mabel’s shenanigans pretty quickly.

Which Stars Are New For Season 4?

Molly Shannon

So far Molly Shannon is the only new addition to Only Murders in the Building Season 4 for whom any concrete character details have been shared. The Saturday Night Live alum is reportedly playing “a high-powered LA businesswoman who finds herself drawn into the world of the investigation in NY.” Now that the Only Murders Season 4 trailer has been released, it seems like she’s the driving force behind the movie about Charles, Oliver and Mabel’s podcast, as she needs them to sign over their life rights in order to make there project happen. Shannon’s other recent TV credits include being a series regular on Max’s The Other Two and Showtime’s I Love That For You, both of which have ended.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria will play a fictional version of herself in Only Murders in the Building Season 4, as she’s been cast to play Mabel Mora in the film adaptation of the Only Murders podcast. What’s unclear is if that will be the extent of her involvement this season or if she’ll be directly wrapped into the investigation. In addition to this Hulu series, Longoria, who also recently directed the Hulu movie Flamin’ Hot, also has Land of Women coming up, which will be streamable with an Apple TV+ subscription.

Eugene Levy

Way back in the day, Eugene Levy and Martin Short performed together on the sketch comedy series SCTV, and the two later appeared in Steve Martin’s Father of the Bride movies. Now Levy is finally getting to reunite with these two fellow comedic heavyweights thanks to Only Murders in the Building. In fact, the connection between them runs even closer on this series, as the fictional version of Levy will play Charles-Haden Savage in this Only Murders movie.

Zach Galifianakis

The list of comedic talents taking part in Only Murders Season 4 keeps growing, as Zach Galifianakis will also appear. Not only will his fictional self be playing Oliver Putnam in the Only Murders movie, it's been teased that he'll play an "integral" role in the investigation, though exactly how so remains to be seen Galifianakis, of course, is best known for playing Alan in the Hangover movies, but he's also well known for hosting Between Two Ferns and leading the TV show Baskets, as well as his roles in Birdman, The LEGO Batman Movie, A Wrinkle in Time and Ron's Gone Wrong.

Kumail Nanjiani

Kumail Nanjiani is also set to appear in a recurring capacity on Only Murders Season 4. Like with Eva Mendes and Zach Galifianakis, his character is also to be important to this season's investigation, though that still doesn't rule out him playing a fictional version of himself. Nanjiani's major credits from the last several years include Eternals, Migration, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Welcome to Chippendale's, the latter of which is also a Hulu-exclusive series. 2024 also see him starring in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Richard Kind

Yet another comedic heavyweight has joined Only Murders in the Building Season 4’s cast. This time, it’s Richard Kind, who has an impressive collection of both film and TV work, ranging from A Bug’s Life and A Serious Mind to Mad About You, Spin City and Curb Your Enthusiasm. No details about his role in the Hulu series have been revealed yet, though if I had to guess, he’s probably playing a character rather than a fictional version of himself. The eyepatch he's wearing certainly makes a strong case for this.

Daphne Rubin-Vega

In the world of stage acting, the Tony-nominated Daphne Rubin-Vega is best known for originating the roles of Mimi Marquez in Rent and Lucy in Jack Goes Boating, to name just a few of the productions she’s participated in. As far as her onscreen work goes, that includes the Jack Goes Boating film adaptation, In the Heights, Smash, Katy Keene and The Changeling. Whomever Rubin-Vega ends up playing in Only Murders in the Building, hopefully the role makes use of her singing talents.

Catherine Cohen

Acting-wise, Catherine Cohen has popped up in movies and TV shows like Broad City, The Lovebirds, Home Sweet Home Alone and What We Do in the Shadows. However, she’s best known for her 2022 Netflix comedy special The Twist...? She's Gorgeous, and her comedy act in general uniquely includes cabaret-style songs. It remains to be seen if that will factor into the character she plays on Only Murders in the Building.

Jin Ha

Jin Ha is another actor who’s built quite the resume of stage productions, most notable playing Aaron Burr in Hamilton on Broadway a few years back. But as far as TV work goes, his two main claims to fame are the Hulu miniseries Devs and the Apple TV+ series Pachinko. He also retimed with Devs creator Alex Garland for the movie Civil War. Now we wait to learn how he’ll fit into the events that unfold in Only Murders in the Building Season 4.

Melissa McCarthy

The Only Murders in the Building Season 4 trailer revealed that Melissa McCarthy will be along for the ride for this latest installment of the Hulu show. But in my continuing efforts to sound like a broken record, we don’t know yet if she’s playing a fictional version of herself or a separate character. Some of the actress’ recent appearances include Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Superintelligence, Thunderforce, The Little Mermaid and Unfrosted.

Keep your eyes peeled on this space for more casting updates about Only Murders in the Building Season 4, as you can count on the lineup of participating talent growing a lot bigger. Hosting the Academy Awards is a tough gig, and it’s not for the faint of heart. However, these ten Oscar hosts stand out as some of the best to emcee one of the biggest nights in Hollywood. Spanning back over 90 years, many have hosted the iconic award show, but these are the top ten of the bunch.

10. Jimmy Kimmel

Hosting in 2017, 2018, 2023 and 2024, Jimmy Kimmel has proved himself as a formidable frontman for The Oscars. While the late-night host has called hosting “a fucking nightmare,” there’s no denying that he’s good at it, and he knows how to handle all the ups and downs of this ceremony. I mean, he is the man who had to deal with the La La Land and Moonlight fiasco. Now, Kimmel is hosting for the fourth time, emceeing the night for the 2024 Oscar nominees, and I’m sure this consistent king will kill it.  

9.  Jon Stewart 

While Jon Stewart hosted The Daily Show for 16 years (and recently came back to lead the Comedy Central hit), he also took a spin at hosting the Oscars in 2006 and 2008. During his first year leading the ceremony, they did a skethc where multiple of the hosts mentioned on this list turned down the job, and eventually they landed on Stewart.

Well, I’m happy they did, because he used his satirical humor, which is typically used to poke fun at politics, to make the Academy Awards audience laugh. Then he was asked back in 2008, where he used his talents to address the ‘08 writers’ strike in a funny, yet hard-hitting way while honoring that year's winners.

8. Chris Rock

Long before Will Smith slapped Chris Rock and that took over the internet, the stand-up comedian hosted the Academy Awards, and his work was met with love. Hosting in 2005 and 2016 – where he took on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy with lots of jokes and gusto – the actor brought his signature confident comedic style to the biggest stage in movies, calling out the people in Hollywood who hold the power while also making the crowd and viewers laugh.

7.  Steve Martin

We’re all aware of the fact that Steve Martin is one of the best to ever host Saturday Night Live. It turns out those skills are transferable, because he was also a fabulous Oscars host in 2001, 2003 and 2010 (when he co-hosted with Alec Baldwin). Beloved for his silly goofy movies and TV shows, Martin brought that energy to the Oscars stage as he helped lead the evening and make fun of the night’s nominees. 

6. Johnny Carson

Johnny Carson is undoubtedly one of, if not the best late-night host ever. However, he’s also a formidable Oscar host, unsurprisingly. The longtime host of The Tonight Show led the Academy Awards five times – in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1984. Poking fun at the nominated movies and himself, Carson brought the charm we knew and loved from late-night, and he used it to emcee the ceremony mastefully.

5. Hugh Jackman

What else is there to say, he “is Hugh Jackman,” and he brought all his charm, wit, good looks and dancing shoes to the 2009 Oscars. Best known at the time for being Wolverine, Jackman reminded everyone that he’s also a wickedly talented song-and-dance man, and his homemade opening number (which featured Anne Hathaway!) was super fun, bubbly and very memorable. 

It’s also worth noting that this gig helped Jackman land The Greatest Showman, which is one of Jackman's most beloved movies. 

4.  Ellen DeGeneres 

While Ellen DeGeneres hosted The Oscars for the first time in 2007, she cemented herself as one of the best when she led the ceremony in 2014. Along with a solid monologue and great quips, the big reason why the former talk show host is known as a great Academy Awards host is because of that epic Oscars selfie she orchestrated that broke the internet. 

3. Bob Hope

The first televised Academy Awards aired in 1953, and it was hosted by comedy legend Bob Hope, who had emceed the evening six other times before that. To this day he holds the record for hosting the most, as he’s helmed the show a whopping 19 times (radio: 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1954 and 1956, and televised: 1953, 1955, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1975 and 1978). 

Throughout his run hosting the Oscars, Hope shared the job with other legends, including Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, Jack Lemmon and more. He also led the show by himself 14 times. It can be argued that he set the precedent for what is expected from an Academy Awards host, and let’s just say he set the bar very high. 

2. Whoopi Goldberg

Hosting The Oscars four times in 1994, 1996, 1999 and 2002, Whoopi Goldberg won over audiences with her charm and wicked sense of humor. Along with some of Goldberg’s best movies making a splash at the ceremony – like The Color Purple and Ghost – the actress and comedian also made her mark by hosting. The Academy Award winner is remembered for her over-the-top outfits, like the Moulin Rouge! outfit she wore in 2002 or the Queen Elizabeth I costume from 1999, and that mixed with her incredibly smart comedic style made her a great choice for the hosting job. 

1. Billy Crystal

Billy Crystal hosted the Oscars nine times (1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2004 and 2012), and there’s a reason he was asked back over and over again. 

For example, in 1997, he interacted with Yoda, and in 1998, he entered on the Titanic, and then proceeded to introduce the night’s nominees through song. The year 2000 brought a bit about looking back at 100 years of film, and 2004’s ceremony featured parodies of movies like Something’s Gotta Give and Seabiscuit. 

All this is to say that Billy Crystal’s best moments hosting the Oscars are some of the best overall, and that’s why he is number one on our list.

Overall, there have been so many legends to lead us through the Academy Awards, and from Billy Crystal to Whoopi Goldberg to Jimmy Kimmel and more, they all deserve their flowers. 

Only Murders in the Building has done it again! Their guest and recurring star game has always been top tier, however, this latest addition is next level. Now that we know OMITB is getting out of New York and the building, it opens the door for so many new folks to join the cast, including Saturday Night Live legend Molly Shannon!

As Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building gets to work, Deadline reported the first major casting news, revealing Shannon’s involvement in the show. According to the article, she will “play a high-powered LA businesswoman who finds herself drawn into the world of the investigation in NY.” So, it sounds like she’ll become very invested in Sazz’s murder, and will be involved with both the Los Angeles and New York storylines.

To recap, in the shocking Season 3 finale of OMITB, Charles’ (Steve Martin) stunt double Sazz (Jane Lynch) got murdered. She was from LA, plus multiple loose ends are pulling our trio west – like Mabel’s (Selena Gomez) love interest Tobert (Jesse Williams) moving there and Oliver’s (Martin Short) love interest Loretta (Meryl Streep) heading that way to act. So, everyone in this story has an interest in going to the City of Angels, and while they’re there it’s looking like they’ll bump into Shannon’s character. 

Then when they make their way back to the Arconia in New York City, it sounds like she’ll be right alongside them, and I can’t wait. Now, it’s just a matter of time before we find out if Molly Shannon’s character will be on our OMITB suspect list or if she’ll be of service to our leading trio.

Considering the Hulu comedy's guest star track record – Jane Lynch, Nathan Lane, Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd and oh so many more – it’s not shocking that they landed another comedy legend for Season 4. Also, while Only Murders has many theater vets, Shannon will be one more Saturday Night Live star added to this elite ensemble that is led by former SNL cast member Martin Short and beloved host Steve Martin and regularly features the sketch comedy show’s former head writer and star Tina Fey. 

Personally, I hope we get to see Molly Shannon’s physical and over-the-top comedy style we adored on SNL in Only Murders. This show is filled with eccentric and goofy characters, and she’s the ideal addition to the show. I feel like having some Mary Katherine Gallagher or Sally O’Malley energy in this comedy that’s considered one of Hulu’s best shows would be fabulous.

On top of her beloved SNL run, Shannon is also known for her acclaimed roles in The Other Two and Other People. She was also part of The White Lotus during Season 1, which is a coveted show to get on these days. Honestly, the only rotating cast that can match the esteem of The White Lotus is Only Murders in the Building, which speaks to Shannon’s talents. 

Hopefully, Only Murders will premiere on the 2024 TV schedule, and we’ll get to find out how Molly Shannon fits into the world sooner rather than later. However, at the time of this writing, we don’t know when it will come back. So, while we wait for more exciting news surrounding this hilarious whodunnit and the SNL veteran’s involvement in it, you can stream Seasons 1 through 3 with a Hulu subscription. 

Only Murders in the Building, one of the best Hulu TV shows, was a strictly New York affair during its first three seasons, and for good reason. Each of the central murder victims died within the Arconia, the building where Charles-Haden Savage, Oliver Putnam and Mabel Mora lived, and Season 3 doubled down on the Big Apple-ness by throwing a Broadway production into the mix. Well, word’s come in that in Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez will finally travel to another state, and I’m so glad to hear this.

Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich revealed this tidbit of information in an interview with Deadline, as he’d previously said he’d read the first four-five Season 4 scripts. Here’s what he said when the outlet asked if he could talk more about his reaction to them:

It was also clarified in the Deadline report that Charles, Oliver and Mabel will go to Los Angeles at the beginning of Season 4, then come back to the Arconia. Considering that Only Murders in the Building Season 3 ended with Jane Lynch’s Sazz, Charles’ longtime stunt double, being shot and killed in the actor’s apartment at the Arconia, it wouldn’t make sense to uproot the show to the City of Angels. Nevertheless, I’m excited that our protagonists will visit the West Coast, as this trip makes sense for several narrative reasons.

For one thing, if Sazz was living in Hollywood, then it stands to reason Charles, Oliver and Mabel would not only fly out there for her funeral, but also potentially try to uncover any clues about who gunned her down back in New York. But let’s also not forget that in Season 3’s final episode, Jesse Williams’ Tobert informed Mabel that he was heading to LA to for a job opportunity and invited her to join him, but she decided to stay in New York. Meryl Streep’s Loretta learned from Jeremy Shamos’ Dickie, her son, that she’d gotten numerous job offers in LA, including for a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff.

Although they weren’t willing to permanently move across the country, Mabel and Oliver respectively told Tobert and Loretta that they were interest in visiting them in LA in small doses. So combine that with Sazz’s untimely demise, and you have more than enough justification for this Only Murders in the Building Season 4 location change, even if it’s only temporary. However, I’d be remiss if I also didn’t mention that Craig Erich said he “didn’t have anything to share” about whether the actress will return, so don’t count her involvement in the fourth season as something set in stone.

There’s no word yet on when Only Murders in the Building Season 4 will premiere to Hulu subscribers, but assuming it’s sometime this year, then you can count on us adding the date to the 2024 TV schedule once it’s announced. Hosting an award show can be hard, though, most of us really don't know that first-hand. Someone who got a taste of such a gig just recently is Jo Koy, who hosted the 2024 Golden Globes and bombed with his monologue. Since then, the Internet has been roasting Koy for it. While comic continues to take his lumps, there is one veteran comedian and former awards show host who has a fresh perspective that's worth considering. Steve Martin was the person who shared his take on the situation, and I'm here for his sentiments.

While people continue to debate the merits of Jo Koy's jokes about Taylor Swift and more Steve Martin popped up on Threads to drop his two cents on the Golden Globes and the comedian's job hosting. While many are poking fun, Martin decided to commend Koy for the job he did and share his own experience with hosting award shows as a comedian: 

A lot of what Steve Martin said above matched Jo Koy's own thoughts about hosting the Golden Globes. Handling such a gig isn't exactly easy, especially when you're a comedian -- whose job it is to try to make the audience at home laugh at the expense of famous celebrities in the room. Though not every star is going to think the jokes are funny, and the same can be said for the members of the general public that are tuning in. Such comments can cut particularly deep for public figures, though, especially as far as their work is concerned.

For instance, the Easter Sunday star made a joke about Barbie having big boobs. Making a quip like that in front of a group of creatives who strived to make a movie combating that exact stereotype is a lot different from saying it in front of an average audience at a stand-up show. The actor and comic is a fan of those who came before him, as he listed his comedy legends while speaking to CinemaBlend. So one would think that he'd be happy to know he has an understanding colleague in Steve Martin. 

And as the Only Murders in the Building star also said, maybe this experience will lead to Jo Koy making one of the funniest stand-up comedy specials on Netflix at some point. He does, after all, now have a lot of interesting material to draw from. Whether they found the monologue funny or not, it's likely that audiences will tune in to see what he has to say about the experience when he takes to the stage again. It remains to be seen if Koy will ever take on another hosting gig and, if he does, he can keep Martin's sage advice in mind. 

We'll have to wait and see what Jo Koy's next big move will be following the Golden Globes, and cross our fingers that the next major host of an award show won't have to scramble to pull together their monologue at the last-minute. The phrase, “That’s the ticket,” is not exactly unique to Jon Lovitz’s Tommy Flanagan — the president of Pathological Liars Anonymous (or so he claims). However, it became imbedded in the SNL character’s legacy by the way it accompanies his most amusing fibs.

"We Are Two Wild And Crazy Guys!” - The Festrunk Brothers

Legendary Not Ready For Primetime Player Dan Aykroyd and Steve Martin — arguably the greatest SNL host of all time — make up the swinging Czechoslovakian duo called the Festrunk Brothers. Of course, most people might know them better as the “Two Wild and Crazy Guys” from their vigorous mantra.

"New York's Hottest Club Is..." - Stefon

“Weekend Update” hosts just want Stefon (Bill Hader as the wild character he and John Mulaney created) to talk about the best family-friendly activities in New York. Instead, he would start his spiel by announcing the city’s new popular after hours joint, and it would only get funnier from there.

"We're Not Worthy!" - Wayne And Garth

Wayne Campbell (“Wayne’s World” creator Mike Myers) and Garth Algar (Dana Carvey) have come into contact with several celebrities (both on their cable access program and in their classic SNL spin-off movies). But, rarely have they been able to keep their cool around them, resorting to dropping to their knees, bowing, and declaring their undeserving presence.

"... I Live In A Van Down By The River!" - Matt Foley

The definitive performance by, arguably, the definitive ‘90s-era SNL cast member, Chris Farley, is his gut-busting portrayal of Matt Foley. In addition to being one of the most iconic divorced TV characters, the ill-advised motivational speaker’s most recognizable trait is his unfavorable place of residence (“a van down by the river”), which he reminds people of any chance he gets.

"Oooh, It's A Lady!" - Leon "The Ladies Man" Phelps

The most iconic character played by Tim Meadows (one of SNL’s longest-running cast members) is Leon Phelps, who would receive calls from men and women alike during his live romantic advice program. However, he always made it clear that he especially enjoyed attention from the opposite gender, which is exactly why they called him “The Ladies Man.”

"Cheeburger, Cheeburger, Cheeburger" - Pete Dionisopoulos

When Don Novello created the beloved SNL sketch from Season 3, “The Olympia Restaurant,” he might not have realized that simply repeating the word “cheeseburger” would create such an impact. Yet, John Belushi’s distinct pronunciation of it as the cafe’s Greek manager, Pete Dionisopoulos, served up a decadent comedy feast. 

"I’m Good Enough, I’m Strong Enough And Doggone It, People Like Me" - Stuart Smalley

Easily one of the most wholesome SNL characters ever conceived is Stuart Smalley, played by longtime series veteran and former U.S. senator Al Franken. He would begin each episode of his talk show, Daily Affirmations, with this personal affirmation that, perhaps, we should all be starting our days with.

"I'm Verklempt" - Linda Richman (Coffee Talk)

For various reasons — be it her strained relationship with her daughter or Barbra Streisand’s latest Oscar “snub” — Linda Richman often found herself overcome with emotion as host of “Coffee Talk.” By referring to these episodes as her being “verklempt,” the catchphrase became one of Mike Myers’ funniest quotes and never failed to get the audience howling.

"... Makin' Copies!" - Richard Laymer

Office worker Richard Laymer (Rob Schneider) is better known as “the Richmeister,” in reference to his tendency give his colleagues similar-sounding nicknames. This was typically followed by Rich acknowledging they were “makin’ copies” with the machine that just happened to be near his desk, much to their chagrin.

"We Want To Pump You Up!" - Hans And Franz

Austrian fitness “experts” Hans (Dana Carvey) and Franz (Kevin Nealon) had a pretty apt slogan for their program, Pumping Up, stating that they “want to pump [clap] you up!” However, we would discover that they failed to earn the respect of their famous bodybuilder cousin, Arnold Schwarzenegger, when he appeared in one of the most jaw-dropping SNL cameos as himself.

"Party On..." - Wayne And Garth

It was always a party on Wayne’s World, as co-hosts Wayne and Garth often reminded  audiences with this endearing, celebratory greeting. Of course, this phrase is also associated with another famous duo from the same era: Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter’s titular dudes from the Bill and Ted movies.

"I’m Chevy Chase And You’re Not" - Chevy Chase (Weekend Update)

We can sum up Chevy Chase’s signature style of charming smugness and dry wit in just six words. It is with this same phrase that the future Community cast member began nearly every “Weekend Update” segment he hosted during his short, but memorable run on SNL in the 1970s.

"... But I Love Him" - Jodi Deitz (Bronx Beat)

The talk show Bronx Beat was, essentially, an excuse for New York housewives Betty Caruso (Amy Poehler) and Jodi Deitz (Maya Rudolph) to voice their boisterous, and sometimes condemning, opinions on various subjects — with Jodi’s husband being a frequent topic. However, her complaint over her spouse’s moronic tendencies was always accompanied with a tearful affirmation that he still made her happy.

"Give Me A Break" - Ed Grimley

It’s hard to believe that a legend like Martin Short was only on SNL for one season, especially with his impressive assortment of characters like Ed Grimley. The pop-culture obsessed, erratic man-child — borrowed from the actor’s SCTV days — had a few different catchphrases, but his delivery of and situational choices for using “Give me a break” made it a classic.

"It Just Goes To Show Ya, It's Always Somethin'. If It's Not One Thing, It's Another" - Roseanne Roseannadanna

One of the most iconic “Weekend Update” guest characters was Roseanne Roseannadanna, who ended each of her nauseating appearances declaring that, “It’s always somethin’.” The phrase would serve as the title for the late, great Gilda Radner’s memoir, in which she reveals she borrowed it from her own late father’s favorite expression. 

"Superstar!" - Mary Katherine Gallagher

While her intentions may have been hard to interpret at face value, Mary Katherine Gallagher’s commitment to becoming a “superstar” was made clear in the way she exclaimed the phrase with an irresistible gusto. As such, Superstar became the name of a 1999 movie that put Molly Shannon’s quirky Catholic school student in the cinematic spotlight.

"Would You Like To Touch My Monkey?” - Dieter (Sprockets)

West German talk show host Dieter (Mike Myers) is another one of those characters who had many iconic catchphrases at his disposal, with the most famous being “Would you like to touch my monkey?” While it initially sounds a bit suggestive, he is genuinely curious if the guests on his show, Sprockets, would be interested in petting his pet, Klaus.

"Oh No!" - Mr. Bill

Few SNL bits are more traumatic than the short films starring Mr. Bill. The meek, indefensible clay figure could never do anything to prevent the painful situations he found himself in, but to exclaim, “Oh no!” right before they occurred.

"Bring It On Down To ...-Ville!" - Dancing Mascot

Nearly every one of Five-Timers Club member Justin Timberlake’s SNL gigs see him dressed in a ridiculous outfit, performing spoofs of hit songs to promote a local business — such as Omeletteville or Wrappingville — and upstage the competition on the same sidewalk. The pop star and actor even referenced the recurring sketch and its signature quote during a “Weekend Update” appearance when he imagines a non-existent Thanksgiving episode in which we would have brought it on down “Turkeyville.”

"Talk Amongst Yourselves. I'll Give You A Topic..." - Linda Richman (Coffee Talk)

When in need of a moment to compose herself after becoming “verklempt,” Linda Richman always avoided leaving her Coffee Talk audience empty-handed by offering them a conversation piece to pass the time. Examples of her given discussion topics include “Rhode Island is neither a road, nor is it an island” and “Ralph Fiennes is spelled neither rafe nor fines” among many others.

"Buh-Bye" - Flight Attendants

One of the funniest David Spade quotes comes courtesy of a flight attendant who wastes no time letting passengers know he does not want to be there. The character and his iconic “Buh-bye” debuted in a Season 19 SNL sketch also starring Helen Hunt as his equally rude colleague.

"Oh. Well, That’s Different. Nevermind!" - Emily Litella

As the elderly Emily Litella, Gilda Radner appeared on “Weekend Update” numerous times to present an opposing viewpoint to an editorialized topic, only to be informed that her supposed hearing problems led her to dish on something entirely different from the intended subject. Some of the most classic examples include “violins on television” instead of “violence on television” or questioning why the Supreme Court made a decision on a “deaf penalty” when, in fact, it was a decision on the “death penalty."

"What're YOUUUU Doin' Herrre?" - Stuart (The Californians)

The key as to why a sketch as simple as “The Californians” has stood the test of time is Fred Armisen’s preposterously over-the-top West Coast accent when portraying Stuart, especially when asking why certain acquaintances are in his house. Apparently, as Bill Hader shared with Seth Meyers on Late Night, he and Kristen Wiig did not know Armisen would pronounced “What’re you doing here?” so cartoonishly, causing the sketch to not go quite as planned with their uncontrollable laughter.

"You Look Marvelous" - Fernando Lamas

The peak highlight of Billy Crystal’s brief SNL stint was his portrayal of Fernando Lamas as a talk show host who often gushed over how “mahvelous” his guests looked. The Argentinian actor’s son, Lorenzo Lamas, even said that his father actually loved the impression.

"It's Reno Time!" - Janet Reno

For as long as Janet Reno served the U.S. Attorney General, Will Ferrell played her for years as the misplaced host of a teen-centered musical program called “Janet Reno’s Dance Party.” On the final edition of the sketch, the real politician herself crashed through a brick wall to shout out her SNL doppelgängers catchphrase.

"... Is That Bad To Do Do Do...?" - Junice Merill

No character portrayed by Academy Award-nominated SNL star Kristen Wiig is really known for having any definitive catchphrases, but Junice Merill does have her own “catch-lyric.” When she and her sisters appear on The Lawrence Welk Show, she takes one moment of their performance to confess something grotesque and possibly illegal before asking if it is “bad” in song.

"Delta Delta Delta! Can I Help Ya, Help Ya, Help Ya?" - Delta Delta Delta Sorority Sisters

One of the youngest SNL cast members (being 23 at the time) is Melanie Hutsell, whose most famous character was a sorority pledge named Di. She and her fellow sisters (played by Siobhan Fallon and Beth Cahill) would answer the sorority house phone in this most hilariously upbeat way.

"I Got A Fever And The Only Prescription Is More Cowbell!" - Bruce Dickinson

One of the most iconic SNL sketches prominently featuring an A-list host is a faux clip of Blue Öyster Cult recording “Don’t Fear the Reaper” under the supervision of Christopher Walken as Bruce Dickinson. His likening of Gene Frenkle’s (Will Ferrell) cowbell as a cure for his metaphorical illness in this one-off sketch may not exactly count as a catchphrase, but is undeniably one of the most celebrated lines in the series’ history. In fact, Walken claims it “ruined” his life with how often people quote it at him.

"Don't Look At My Bum" - Simon

Mike Myers stars in a recurring sketch as a young British boy named Simon, who likes to show the audience his drawing from a bathtub. In many instances, as he would turn around to reach for another example of his artwork, the child felt compelled to remind his viewers not to stare at his “bum.”

"That's What Your Mother Said Last Night" - Sean Connery (Celebrity Jeopardy!)

For no discernible reason, Darrell Hammond’s Sean Connery was more interested in spending the entirety of his appearances in SNL’s best Celebrity Jeopardy! sketches taunting Will Ferrell’s Alex Trebek than winning the game. Most of his insults involved the host’s mother, whom he jokingly claimed to have a relationship with.

These SNL catchphrases prove that, sometimes, it is not what you say, but how you say it. These characters said it hilariously.

Everything is bigger in Texas, they say, and that certainly includes the star power of its homegrown celebrities. From the biggest stars in music to the biggest on the silver screen, the biggest celebs in the squared circle, and almost everywhere else, Texas has bred them all. 

California may be home to Hollywood, but there might not be a Hollywood without its biggest legends who hail from the Lone Star State, so here is our list of some of the biggest stars from Texas

Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey was born in Uvalde, Texas, raised mostly in Longview, TX, went to college in Austin, and got his first big break in show business in Dazed & Confused, which was, of course, filmed in Texas. McConaughey still lives in Austin. It makes sense that the proud Texan wants to see more movies made in his home state. McConaughey has also sparked rumors in the past that he might be interested in running for political office in Texas, though he's usually brushed them aside. Politician or not, the man sure loves his home state. 

Renée Zellweger

She may have won accolades for playing an English woman, but Renée Zellweger is Texas through and through. The Bridget Jones' Diary star was born outside Houston in Katy, TX, and grew up there before attending the University of Texas. It was in Austin that she discovered her love for acting and she landed her first on-screen role as an extra in Dazed & Confused. 

Owen Wilson

Dallas-born Owen Wilson has played a lot of fantastic roles over the years, but none better than his many roles in the films of Wes Anderson. Wilson and fellow Texan Anderson have been friends since their college days at the University of Texas. It's also worth noting that both of Owen Wilson's brothers, Luke and Andrew, also hail from Texas, of course. 

Jim Parsons

While some people ooze "Texas," Houston native Jim Parsons doesn't, really. You might guess he'd be from New York or Chicago, but nope, he's a Texan. Born and raised in the suburbs of Houston, he also attended the University of Houston before striking out for Hollywood and making it big. 

Carol Burnett

Comedy legend Carol Burnett grew up in California, attending high school right in Hollywood, but the Annie star was born deep in the heart of Texas, in San Antonio in 1933. Though her vast career has taken her far from Texas, the state can still call her one of its own. 

Beyoncé

If the stars are brighter and everything is bigger in Texas, then it only makes sense that one of the biggest stars would come from Houston. There is no bigger star on the planet than Beyoncé, who was born and raised in Texas along with her sister Solange and her Destiny's Child bandmate, LaTavia Roberson. 

Selena Gomez

Like many other native Texas, Selena Gomez is proud of her Mexican heritage. The Only Murders In The Building star was born in Grand Prairie, Texas, near Dallas, and although her many acting roles and career took her to California early in life, her family's roots are firmly in the Lone Star State. Gomez is named for another Texas native as well, the late Tejano superstar Selena, who was murdered in Corpus Christi in 1995. 

Woody Harrelson

Woody Harrelson first got famous playing a farm boy-turned-bartender from Indiana on Cheers, and while he moved to Ohio as a teenager, Harrelson was born in Midland, Texas. He's also tight with his occasional co-star and fellow Texan, Matthew McConaughey, and, according to McConaughey, the two could even be brothers! 

Tommy Lee Jones

Sure, he was roommates at Harvard with Al Gore, but Tommy Lee Jones is all Texan. The No Country For Old Men star was born in the small town of San Saba, Texas, and raised in Midland. He's never really strayed far either, as he has resided in Terrell Hills, TX, near San Antonio, for years. He's also a member of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, and the Texas Film Hall of Fame. There really isn't another actor who screams "Texas" like Jones, is there?

Steve Martin

Waco-born Steve Martin is one of the funniest people in film history. While he grew up mostly in Southern California, his roots are originally in central Texas, where he was born in Waco, on August 14th, 1945, the same day that the Japanese surrendered in World War II. 

Jamie Foxx

The multi-talented Jamie Foxx started acquiring his many skills as a kid in Terrell, TX, outside Dallas, where he was born and raised. As a kid, he played piano and excelled at sports at Terrell High School. He moved to Southern California after school and in 1991, scored a role on In Living Color, and the rest is history. 

Jennifer Garner

Jennifer Garner moved to West Virginia when she was just three, so she probably doesn't remember much of anything from her early life in Texas, but the Daredevil star was born in Houston. 

Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson exploded into show business by winning the first-ever season of American Idol and she's been a star ever since. It's a journey that started when she was born in Forth Worth, TX, and raised in the suburb of Burleson, just outside the city. While her career may have taken her to LA and New York, her heart (and sports allegiance) has stayed in Texas.

Wes Anderson

People love to debate what the best Wes Anderson movie is, but if you are wondering what is his most personal, it's probably Bottle Rocket, which was filmed almost entirely in Anderson's home state of Texas. It stars a couple of fellow Texans as well, Owen and Luke Wilson. While the Wilsons are from Dallas originally, Anderson hails from Houston. 

Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion is a triple threat. She proved herself on the mic, and on the dance floor, first, then she started taking over TV and movies by starring in her first film in 2023. Before all that happened, though, she grew up in and around Houston. The “H-town Hottie” even got her nickname, Stallion, in the city. 

Michelle Rodriguez

Michelle Rodriguez has been in some huge film franchises, like Fast & Furious and Avatar. She kind of grew up all over, including in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, but she was born and lived for a few years of her life in San Antonio, TX. 

Ethan Hawke

Ethan Hawke's parents were high school sweethearts who had Ethan shortly after they were married. Born in 1970 in Austin, TX, Hawke moved to the Northeast with his mother but spent his summers in Fort Worth with his dad. His grandfather even served in the Texas House of Representatives for 10 years. He has deep Texas roots that he is proud of. 

Hilary Duff

Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff is another Texas girl. Born in Houston, her family also spent time in San Antonio before moving to California when Duff was still young to pursue her acting career. Boy did that pay off quickly! 

Jennifer Love Hewitt

From a young age, Jennifer Love Hewitt was showing off her talents, singing and dancing across Texas, where she was born in 1979. Eventually, even the Lone Star State could not contain her and she moved to LA with her family, where she soon landed her first starring role on the legendary Party Of Five, after having roles on the Disney Channel and elsewhere as a kid. 

Eva Longoria

Born in Corpus Christi, TX in 1975, Eva Longoria has always been proud of her Tejano roots. In fact, her ancestry and culture are so important to her that she returned to college to earn a Master's degree in Chicano studies from Cal State-Northridge.

Forest Whitaker

Though he went to high school in Los Angeles, Forest Whitaker's life began in Longview, Texas. Every summer of his youth, he spent time with his grandparents in Longview and still has family all over Texas. 

Taylor Sheridan

It's no surprise that Taylor Sheridan is from Texas. While he was actually born in North Carolina, the Yellowstone creator is the definition of a true Texan. Not only did he grow up in Fort Worth, but he owns a working ranch in the Lone Star state called 6666 Ranch. He and his family live in Weatherford, Texas.

Farrah Fawcett

She might have had the reputation of being the all-American blonde from California, but Farrah Fawcett was born and raised in Texas. After high school in Corpus Christi, she attended the University of Texas before heading to Hollywood where she immediately started landing acting and modeling jobs. Once she scored her role on Charlie's Angels, the rest is history. 

Isaiah Washington

Controversial actor Isaiah Washington's most prominent role was in the first three seasons of Grey's Anatomy. Since then, he's worked on numerous films and TV shows, before announcing his retirement in 2023. He was born and raised in Houston. 

William Jackson Harper

Star of The Good Place William Jackson Harper is a native Texan, born in Dallas and raised in Garland, TX, where he first started acting in high school. His Texas-sized determination kept him going when he struggled early in his career, before finding a starring role on the Kristen Bell-led sitcom. 

Dakota Johnson

It might be surprising to learn that despite being the daughter of Hollywood royalty, Dakota Johnson was born in Texas. She was born to Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson in Austin while her father shot a movie in the Lone Star State. The star was then raised in Los Angeles, of course, but Austin will always be where she came into this world. Since then, she's built a great career. 

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin

Steven James Anderson loves his home state so much, that he took a name based on its capital, Austin. Better known as "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, the WWE superstar was, in fact, born in Austin, though he was raised mostly in Edna, TX. The wrestler still owns property in the state, Broken Skull Ranch, near Tilden, TX. It's not like he hides his love for the state either, as one of his many nicknames is "The Texas Rattlesnake."

Gary Busey

People sometimes forget that Gary Busey was once nominated for an Oscar for playing Texan Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story, and the actor also hails from Holly's home state. Busey was born in the Houston area; Baytown, Texas, to be exact. He moved to Oklahoma in elementary school and it was in Tulsa that the enigmatic actor began his show biz career. One of his first big breaks in Hollywood was a TV show that was set in Texas called, appropriately, The Texas Wheelers.

Gina Carano

Gina Carano was controversially dismissed from The Mandalorian and whether you agree with the decision or not, it's hard to argue that the MMA star brought a little bit of that strong individualism Texas is known for to the role and her career. Something that might be inherent in her, as she was born in Dallas County Texas.

Shaquille O'Neal

Texas is a huge state, with a lot of personality, so it only makes sense that a celebrity who's physically large and has a personality to match would hail from the state. Shaquille O’Neal is an Army brat, so he moved around a lot as a kid, including being born in New Jersey. It's in Texas, however, where the world started to pay attention to O'Neal as he became a standout basketball star, eventually becoming a top college recruit and going to LSU for school. He was drafted into the NBA as the #1 overall pick in 1992, and the rest is history.  

Robin Wright

Robin Wright might be best known for playing a Washington insider on House Of Cards and a Buttercup in The Princess Bride, but before all that, she was born in Dallas in 1966. Her parents divorced when she was young and her family moved to Southern California, but for those two years, she was a Texan. 

Michael Strahan

He first made a name for himself playing football in New York, and now he's known for hosting Good Morning America in New York, but Michael Strahan is a born and bred Texan. He was born in Houston, and went to high school there, though for a little while he lived with his family in Germany where his father was stationed in the Army. 

There you have it, a list that proves everything is, indeed, bigger in Texas. The toast, the steer, the plains, and the stars. Not just the stars in the sky, but the stars in Hollywood and beyond. Few states can compete with the Lone Star state when it comes to star power. 

There is no genre more near and dear to my heart than comedy. The skills necessary to make others laugh -- whether live and in-person or through a screen -- are a unique and beautiful combination that should be protected at all costs. Some artists are able to do so without leaning in to touchy subjects or cursing, while others go all the way to really earn that R rating. The tactics may differ, but the end goal is the same, to bring others joy through jokes. 

Many comedians see movies as the apex of a potential career, but most don't start out their careers in Hollywood. Many grow first through either stand-up comedy or sketch comedy. This list honors them. Here's a look back at famous actors who started in either the stand-up or sketch comedy world and went on to bigger screens.

Rainn Wilson

Known as arguably one of the best characters on the hit show The Office, Rainn Wilson got his start in the arts in New York City where he studied acting at NYU. He went on to do theater both off and on Broadway as well as sketch comedy. He even did a post-modern clown show before getting his big break on the show Six Feet Under in 2001. 

Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg got her start by studying drama in New York, where she landed a few stage performances before trying her hand at stand-up comedy. Like many others on this list, her comedy routine -- "The Spook Show" -- caught the attention of Oscar-winning director Mike Nichols, who helped get the young comedian to Broadway. She eventually landed her first film in Steven Spielberg's film The Color Purple, for which she earned an Oscar nomination in 1986. 

Steve Buscemi

The veteran character actor made his acting debut in 1985, but also tried his hand at stand-up comedy. Eventually, Busemi decided he "wasn't funny enough," and switched to acting instead. Buscemi has since starred in popular movies including Fargo, Resevoir Dogs, and the hit HBO Max show Boardwalk Empire.

Emma Thompson

If you're looking for a stand-up with some serious credentials, look no further than Emma Thompson. Winner of two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, a British Academy Television Award and a Primetime Emmy Award, the talented actor got her start in stand-up while in Cambridge. 

John Candy

Arguably one of the greatest comedy legends to ever live, John Candy led a fascinating life, getting his big break after joining the ensemble of SCTV — which is, essentially, the Canadian equivalent to SNL. In 1989, the star even added radio personality to his resume. The LA Times did a whole write-up of his syndicated, two-hour program, Radio Kandy, which sounds wild and apparently included rock music and comedy sketches featuring some of his former SCTV co-stars.

Mo'Nique

Mo'Nique started her comedy career with stand-up, heading to It's Showtime at the Apollo and Def Comedy Jam before eventually landing a leading role on TV's The Parkers. The comedian took her acting to the next level in 2009's Precious, for which she won an Academy Award.

Steve Carell

A versatile actor with numerous groundbreaking performances in both television and film, Steve Carrell was once a legend at Second City in Chicago who went on to land his dream job working on the ill-fated Dana Carvey Show, which you can learn about in Too Funny To Fail, one of the best comedy documentaries to date. Known best for his role as Michael Scott in the U.S. adaptation of The Office, Carell eventually went on to become a leading man in both comedies and dramas. 

Michael Keaton

To put himself through college where he studied acting, Michael Keaton worked as a cab and ice cream truck driver, and it wasn't until 1975 that he officially debuted on television. He did some stand-up comedy in his early 20s, which he recounted in an interview with Ellen, but he eventually found the right calling with movies.

Tina Fey

Known for her work on the smash hit show 30 Rock, Tina Fey got her start in acting at Second City which quickly led to a job at Saturday Night Live as notably one of the only female writers at the time. She got her break co-hosting Weekend Update and later went on to be a huge star in Hollywood. 

Jamie Foxx

It all started with a dare from a girlfriend to try his hand at an open mic. Flash forward some years and that performance led Jamie Foxx to multiple awards, including two Academy Awards, double digit Grammys, and three Golden Globe Awards, all while showing a versatile ability to crush performances across multiple genres and artistic art forms.

John Cleese

Coming from the United Kingdom, John Cleese is a British comic actor best known for his television work on Monty Python’s Flying Circus and Fawlty Towers. Cleese began writing and performing in comedy revues at Clifton College in Bristol, England, and was a member of the renowned Footlights Club while a law student at the University of Cambridge. He is best known for his work with Monty Pythion, namely Monty Python And The Holy Grail. 

Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais went to school at Ashmead Comprehensive School before going on to study at University College, London, where he gained a degree in Philosophy. After university, Gervais attempted to pursue a pop career with Seona Dancing, a synth-pop duo he formed with a fellow student. After forming a writing partnership with Stephen Merchant, he would go on to land his breakout role on The Office, premiering in 2001. In between all his acting gigs, he's performed plenty of stand-up and has multiple Netflix specials. 

Eddie Murphy

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, SNL star Eddie Murphy began performing his own comedy routines at 15. In 1980, the work of the soon-to-be comedy legend caught the attention of Saturday Night Live producers. In 1982, Murphy landed his first leading role in the film, 48 Hrs, which led to multiple leads in classics such as Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America. He went on to earn an Oscar nomination for Dreamgirls and truly set the bar by playing six characters in the 1996 smash hit, The Nutty Professor. His '80s comedy specials are still discussed today. 

Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer is certainly better known these days for her work in numerous films including the fantastic Trainwreck, but most of those career opportunity doors opened through her stand-up comedy. She built a name for herself through her work on the live mic before mostly switching to movies.

Chris Rock

An SNL vet, Chris Rock's comedy career began in 1984 at 19 when he took the stage in the New York City club Catch a Rising Star. His performance ended up catching the eye of future comedy legend Eddie Murphy, who had been watching his act. Murphy would become a huge presence in Rock's life and served as a mentor, giving him his first break with a role in Beverly Hills Cop II.

Ron Perlman

Known for very courageous roles such as Clay Morrow on the FX show Sons Of Anarchy, Ron Perlman said his ventures as a stand-up comedian ended after a heckling exchange in the Bronx escalated and he retreated out of the venue through the back door, which seems like a strange move for such an intimidating man. 

Robin Williams

Arguably one of the best comedians of all-time, Robin Williams studied acting at the Juilliard School, which he later dropped out of to devote himself entirely to stand-up comedy before making the leap to television and movies. Known for his high energy and skillful impressions, he himself has inspired other actors to reenact some of his most dramatic real-life moments in honor of the late comedian. 

Patton Oswalt

The Prince of Queens, Patton Oswalt went from struggling in the comedy world to writing for the sketch comedy show MADtv and earning his own comedy special on HBO. He continued to impress critics and fans alike, with roles such as the voice of the lead character Remy the Rat in the Pixar film, Ratatouille. 

Richard Pryor

Unfortunately, tragedy and comedy often go hand-in-hand. Such is the case with arguably one of the genre's biggest icons, the late, great, Richard Pryor. The legend had a tough life growing up and eventually joined the military before playing nightclubs as both a musician and comedian at age 23. His comedy career was populated with milestones and achievements, as well as struggles and substance abuse before passing away in 2005 due to complications from M.S..  

Bette Midler

Bette Midler landed her first Broadway role in Fiddler on the Roof by 1966, four years before trying her hand at stand-up comedy. In 1972, she released the album The Divine Miss M, which earned her a Grammy Award, and she started making frequent appearances on late-night television shows and eventually a huge acting career. Along the way, she performed live comedy and even released an album.

Norm Macdonald

Norm Macdonald's first job was writing for The Dennis Miller Show and then Roseanne. While writing on the show, he was noticed by Lorne Michaels, who liked Norm's stand up so much that he offered the young comedian a job on Saturday Night Live in 1993.

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey, who is easily considered one of the greats, was himself taken under the wing of another comedy legend, Rodney Dangerfield, who spotted the young comic in a Toronto nightclub. Carrey eventually made it to The Tonight Show which led to his role on In Living Color and parts in many comedy classics that we know and love today, such as Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, and Ace Ventura. 

Tim Allen

Tim Allen started his career as a comedian in 1975 in a pretty peculiar way. On a dare from one of his friends, he participated in a comedy night at Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, outside of Detroit. Following his release from prison in 1981 for a drug-related crime, he returned to comedy and went on to lead the hit show Home Improvement on ABC. 

Steve Martin

From community theater, to Disneyland, to the big screen, Steve Martin began his showbiz career as a teenager. After writing his own comedy routines, plays, and music, he went on to study philosophy and poetry before winning his first Emmy Award for comedy writing on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour at the young age of 23.

Lily Tomlin

Initially studying biology at Wayne State University, Lily Tomlin decided to audition for a play which led to her changing her major to theatre and diving into stand-up comedy. Her stand-up was so impressive that it attracted the attention of the producers of Laugh-In, the notorious 1960s sketch comedy show. Tomlin went on to snag an Oscar nomination for her acting work.

Dana Carvey

One of SNL's most talented and beloved alumni, Dana Carvey absolutely dominated during his six seasons on Saturday Night Live, creating some of the show's most memorable characters. He never drifted far from stand-up though and has continued to take the stage and release specials.

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks took the weirdest route to stand-up of anyone on this list. He was already in Hollywood and establishing a nice career when he decided to audition for a movie about stand-up comedy called Punchline. As part of that process, he developed his own stand-up routine and performed in clubs. There's even footage of it that trends every now and again.

Bob Odenkirk

Starting out as a D.J. in Illinois, Bob Odenkirk got his start in local improv workshops in Chicago, where he also did open-mic stand-up comedy for several years. In Chicago, he became friends with Robert Smigel, who would later help him become a writer for Saturday Night Live.

Larry David

Starting out in stand-up comedy, Larry David befriended Jerry Seinfeld and later went on to co-create Seinfeld. He also wrote for Friday's and Saturday Night Live and famously went on to create the all-time ridiculous show Curb Your Enthusiasm. 

Ed Helms

Ed Helms was studying improv with the Upright Citizens Brigade when he got his big break as a correspondent on Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He later moved on to the hit NBC show The Office where he played Andy Bernard. From there, Helms went on to star in The Hangover trilogy. More importantly, he also acted in Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.

Mel Brooks

There aren't many names in the world of comedy that stand larger than Mel Brooks. The legend started his career in stand-up before working as a writer for Sid Caesar's variety show Your Show of Shows from 1950 to 1954. After that, he, of course, took over Hollywood, winning an EGOT and directing classics like Blazing Saddles, The Producers and Robin Hood: Men In Tights.

Simon Pegg

A comedic force to be reckoned with in the U.K. before dropping smash hits like Sean of the Dead in the U.S., Pegg once told The Hollywood Reporter “I went into stand-up because comedy was something I enjoyed but also because it offered me a certain autonomy that I wouldn’t have if I was sitting and waiting for the phone to ring as an actor.”

Dan Aykroyd

Dan Aykroyd started performing comedy at 17 and later joined the main casts of Second City in Toronto and Chicago. Later, it was his work in the sketch comedy powerhouse Saturday Night Live that turned him into a huge name and opened the door for him to start in classics like The Blues Brothers and Ghostbusters.

And those are some of the actors who also took the stage to perform stand-up or sketch comedy at some point during their careers!

Some of the best Steve Martin movies came out in the 1980s and 1990s. After he became known for being “just a wild and crazy guy” in popular standup sets, played major roles in a number of great Saturday Night Live sketches while hosting and starred in his first hit movie with 1979’s The Jerk, the next two decades of Martin’s career was full of hilarious comedies where the actor had memorable moments we’re still quoting 30-some years later. 

“I am removing the superfluous buns… George Banks is saying no!!” - Father Of The Bride (1991) 

We never looked at hot dog buns the same again after this scene. While in the midst of an onslaught of checks Father Of The Bride’s George Banks has to write for his daughter’s wedding. The dad reaches his breaking point while at the grocery store which has him taking hot dog buns out of the packaging and ranting about the “superfluous buns” to store clerks. His episode lands him in jail as his daughter gets ready to say “I do.” 

“Arugula. I haven’t had arugula in six weeks. It’s a veg-eh-te-ble.” - My Blue Heaven (1990) 

My Blue Heaven had Steve Martin tapping into the memorable character Vinnie Antonelli, a former mobster inducted into the Witness Protection Program with his wife. One funny line that we haven’t forgotten since its release is how Martin says “arugula” and “vegetable” while stopping for groceries. 

“Well, you slime-eating dogs! You scum-sucking pigs! You sons of a motherless goat!” - Three Amigos (1986)

One of the most iconic trios is Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short in the Three Amigos. When the three actors put on the sombreros of silent film stars who become mistaken for real heroes while in a small Mexican village, it was especially entertaining to see Martin’s Lucky Day speak to real bandits like the lead of a movie, unknown to him that he was seriously risking his life. 

“Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral” - Housesitter (1992) 

Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn teamed up for the first time for 1992’s Housesitter. After Martin’s Newton and Hawn’s Gwen have a one-night stand, she comes back into his life claiming to be his wife. Amidst all the wild antics one particularly laugh-out-loud scene involves Newton improvising to sing a classic Irish-American song to his parents. He’s embarrassed in the moment as he sings to a massive crowd of guests, but his father turns out to be truly moved by the song choice.

“Those aren't pillows!” - Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)

One of the best fall movies, that many of us often rewatch during Thanksgiving time, is Planes, Trains & Automobiles, which paired Steve Martin and John Candy as two strangers trying to get home to Chicago in time for Thanksgiving Day dinner. When Martin’s Neal and Candy’s Del end up having to share a bed at a motel one night, they wake up in each other’s arms cuddling. When they realize they’ve gotten a little too comfortable by each other’s sides, they quickly perk up in disgust at their intimate moment. 

“There's someone out there for everyone. Even if you need a pickaxe, a compass, and night goggles to find them.” - L.A. Story (1991) 

Steve Martin penned his own romantic comedy in 1991. L.A. Story had the actor starring as a TV weatherman named Harris who is looking for love in the big city of Los Angeles, California. Amidst his journey, Martin quips about how difficult it can be to strike rich with lasting love by likening that one needs “night goggles” among other things to really find it. 

“I am in orbit around you, I am suspended weightless over you like the blue man in the Chagall, hanging over you in a delirious kiss.” - Roxanne (1987) 

Steve Martin wrote and starred in a modern retelling of Edmond Rostand's 1897 verse play Cyrano de Bergerac with Roxanne in 1987. The movie had Martin playing Charlie, a fire chief who struggles with having an abnormally long nose and how that affects his burgeoning crush on Daryl Hannah’s Roxanne. This quote from Charlie showcases Martin’s particular charm that moves between romantic and comedic in the balcony scene between him and Roxanne. 

“Hey, let's have five. Let's have six. Let's have a dozen and pretend they're donuts!” - Parenthood (1989)

In Ron Howard’s 1989 film, Parenthood, Steve Martin’s Gil struggles with balancing his family life and career. When his wife Karen (Mary Steenburgen) gets pregnant with their fourth child, Gil jokes about their increasing number of children by comparing them to donuts as he processes the overwhelming feelings that come with being a father to more kids. 

“Oh, the gas isn't for you Seymour, it's for me. You see, I wanna really enjoy this.” - Little Shop of Horrors (1986) 

One of Steve Martin’s wackiest roles of the '80s was certainly as Orin Scrivello, DDS, the sadistic dentist in Little Shop of Horrors. During a standout scene where he is doing dental work on Rick Moranis’ Seymour, he plays into the character’s wild nature, by giving himself the patient’s nitrous oxide. 

"I'm one of those nice, quiet Midwestern guys that no one expects to snap, but when we do, watch it, baby!” - The Out-Of-Towners (1999) 

Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn starred as lovers for the second time after being in Housesitters together in 1999’s The Out-of-Towners, which is a remake of the Jack Lemmon movie from 1970. In the comedy, Martin and Hawn play a longtime married couple who venture out to New York from their quiet life in Ohio to a disastrous adventure that became more than they bargained for. The above quote really comes at a hilarious moment that encapsulates why The Out-Of-Towners is such a treasure. 

“Oh god, they’re dancing!! Take me from this place!!” -Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) 

Another Steve Martin gem is 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels which had the actor playing a con artist competing with Michael Caine’s con artist to swindle a heiress out of $50,000. During the con, Martin’s Freddy poses as a Navy veteran who needs the money to walk again. As Freddy lies through his teeth with a backstory to get Janet to pay up, one enduring scene that remains comical is when Freddy starts having a breakdown at the sight of other people dancing. 

“Oh great, real bullets. You’re in a lot of trouble mister.” - Three Amigos (1986)

When Steve Martin played Lucky Day in Three Amigos alongside Chevy Chase and Martin Short, the silent actors got into a host of funny circumstances as they became real heroes in a Mexican village. This realization came when they were approached by real bandits right after Lucky noticed that he’d been shot by real bullets. Then he goes over to tell a person who he thinks is an actor to simply say he’s “in a lot of trouble” for bringing real weapons to set. 

“At least going to the movies, that’ll be more economical. One child, two seniors, thanks. Kid’s going to love spending his adolescence in a retirement home. At least we won’t hear him come in late.” - Father of the Bride Part II (1995) 

After Steve Martin’s George Banks survives the events of Father of the Bride, he and his wife Nina (Diane Keaton) deal with a new surprise when they find out Nina is pregnant at the same time as their daughter Annie. While the couple breaks the news to Annie, George jokes about the implications of being a father as an older man by talking about common things seniors do and pairing them with raising kids. 

“Our body? It’s my body, I’m sharing my body with anyone!” - All Of Me (1984) 

Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin co-starred in 1984’s All Of Me with tons of humorous moments. In the movie, Tomlin’s millionairess Edwina Cutwater gets her soul transferred into the body of Martin’s Roger. As Roger walks the streets with another person’s consciousness inside him, it makes for some great physical comedy scenes as Martin figures out how to move with a dueling consciousness. In one scene early in their merge, he yells out the above quote in public, which certainly had us giggling. 

“And by the way, you know, when you're telling these little stories? Here's a good idea: have a point. It makes it so much more interesting for the listener!” - Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) 

Although Steve Martin’s Neal is absolutely miserable for much of Planes, Trains & Automobiles as he becomes mixed up with John Candy’s Del on his prolonged journey home to Chicago to enjoy Thanksgiving with his family, it’s entertaining for us to see him pull his hair out about it. In one great line towards the end of the comedy, Neal expresses his frustrations with Del by commenting on his constant rambling. It’s a sick burn that leads to an emotional scene between the pair that Martin himself still gets tearful about. 

"Obvious: Excuse me, is that your nose or did a bus park on your face? Meteorological: everybody take cover, she's going to blow! Fashionable: you know, you could de-emphasize your nose if you wore something larger, like... Wyoming..." - Roxanne (1987) 

In Roxanne, Steve Martin’s Charlie combats the onslaught of bullying he gets for having a large nose by presenting a crowd in town with a list of 20 jokes with “big nose.” He categorizes the jokes and lists them on qualities such as “Sympathetic: Aw, what happened? Did your parents lose a bet with God?” or “Inquiring: when you stop to smell the flowers, are they afraid?” It’s not only a funny sequence, it also highlights how mean people can be and an instance of a character standing up to being made fun of and one-upping them with some humor of their own. 

“What do you say, Gwen? ‘Gwen’ do you get off... and ‘gwhere’ can we ‘gwo’?” - Housesitters (1992) 

In 1992’s Housesitters, Steve Martin’s Newton meets Goldie Hawn’s Gwen, a waitress working at a Hungarian restaurant, and he has a one-night stand with her before she finds him at home and gets his whole town to believe she is his wife. The above quote is a punny play on words Newton does with her name. What makes it funnier later, is the fact that “It’s actually Jessica.” 

“That's one thing I've learned about clients. Dead ones don't pay their bills.” - Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (1982) 

In 1982, Steve Martin co-wrote and starred in a neo-noir comedy called Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Martin plays private investigator Rigby Reardon, who is hired to investigate a scientist and cheesemaker’s death. Amidst Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid’s unique style that serves as a parody and homage to the films of the '40s, a classic line like this one showcases the comedy within the black and white film. 

”I am the worst case scenario of Thomas Jefferson's dream.” - My Blue Heaven (1990)

Steve Martin’s 1990 film, My Blue Heaven, allowed the comedic actor to have some fun with his Italian mobster character, Vinnie Antonelli, as he befriends Rick Moranis’ Barney Coopersmith. It’s a lot of fun to see Martin tap into Vinnie’s hilarious personality as a person in the Witness Protection Program who is not quite reformed from his life of crime. His comment on being the “worst case scenario” of Thomas Jefferson’s dream is a notable way he makes the best of the character. 

“I climbed to the top of a luxury hotel. Not in the elevator, actually on the hotel!” - The Out-Of-Towners (1999) 

The antics of The Out-Of-Towners place Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn’s characters in some ridiculous, and even dangerous, situations as the couple deals with problems that come with facing empty nest syndrome. In one occasion in the movie, Henry Clark has to climb along the outside of a luxury hotel as he pokes fun at in another scene later in the movie. 

“No Franck, tell Hanck it’s not okay.” - Father Of The Bride (1991) 

One of the best parts of Father of The Bride is getting to see George Banks interact with Martin Short’s eccentric wedding planner Franck Eggelhoffer. Throughout the comedy, Franck clearly gets on his nerves, but it’s especially funny when he brings around the caterer named “Hanck” and their rhyming names become the center of a joke whilst George channels his frustrations to Franck just ahead of the wedding taking place. 

"That's part of your problem: you haven't seen enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies." - Grand Canyon (1991) 

Steve Martin clearly barely did dramas throughout the '80s and '90s, but he did pivot to one in 1991 with Lawrence Kasdan’s Grand Canyon, which also starred Danny Glover, Kevin Kline and Alfre Woodard. In the movie, Martin plays Davis, a movie producer who rethinks the violence in his action films after he gets shot in the leg. In one sequence in the film, Martin breaks some dramatic tension by saying the above line. Of course not all of “life’s riddles are answered in the movies” so it’s a funny quote from one of the actor’s roles. 

“It's not a marriage! It is a simple arrangement in which I will share my house with her and in exchange for which she will argue with me in public and generally make my life incredibly terrible.” - Housesitter (1992) 

Steve Martin tees up a very funny take on what marriage is in Housesitters. While in the movie itself, his character of Newton really does accidentally start sharing his house with Goldie Hawn’s Gwen, this quote is funny because it ends with the person he’s talking to responding by saying “that’s marriage!” 

“A minute ago I was really confused about life, and grandma came in with her wonderful and affecting rollercoaster story and now everything’s great again.” - Parenthood (1989)

Steve Martin loves a good sarcastic line, and his character in Parenthood, Gil, certainly delivers a zinger after the family’s grandma interrupts a conversation with his wife Karen to tell a rollercoaster story to the quarreling couple. While Karen finds the moment endearing, Gil only gets more frustrated and says this line. 

“It is better to be truthful and good than to not.” - Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)

During con artist comedy, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, it’s endlessly entertaining to watch what Steve Martin’s Freddy makes up as he swindles others out of money. One notable quote from Freddy in the movie Martin shared with Michael Caine is this moment that definitely is rather ironic considering he’s literally lying as he says this. 

“I can change Gwen. I can live in a make believe world. Hell, I already was. Half the things we tell ourselves are fiction. The only thing I know is real is that I love you.” Housesitter (1992)

At the end of Housesitter, Steve Martin’s Newton actually ends up falling in love with Goldie Hawn’s Gwen even after she made him lie to his friends and family regarding her being his wife. In a sweet, yet very funny, scene at the end, Newton confesses his love to her as she is heading into a bus. After he says these lines, he gets into a whole made-up story of his own to impress her before they kiss and he says “Marry me Gwen, I’m lost without you.”

“Drive carefully. And don't forget to fasten your condom… Seat belt! I meant, I meant seat belt.” - Father Of The Bride (1991) 

It can be awkward to meet the parents. Especially when it’s Father of the Bride’s George Banks. In one early scene, Steve Martin’s leading character lets these words slip as his daughter and fiancé are about to drive off. 

“I tip everybody, that’s my philosophy. You see actually, it’s not tipping I believe in, it’s overtipping.” - My Blue Heaven (1990) 

Gotta love Vinnie Antonelli-isms. Steve Martin’s My Blue Heaven had the former mobster ranting about all sorts of things to Rick Moranis’ Barney, and this was one of them after Barney noticed him even tipping a flight attendant. 

“As sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo, who also happens to be *the actual* El Guapo!” - Three Amigos (1986) 

Steve Martin’s Lucky Day says this funny line in Three Amigos after him and Chevy Chase and Martin Short’s characters, all of which are silent film actors, find themselves defending a Mexican village against bandits. It’s especially inspirational to the situation at hand in the movie because they have to face literal El Guapo. 

“You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department.' That would be bad.” - Roxanne (1987) 

In Roxanne, Steve Martin’s Charlie plays a fire chief who deals with constant attention and discrimination for his abnormal nose. During the movie, he turns on the comedy when he says he has a “dream.” “Not a big dream” but one he hopes is not “too crazy.” He just wants the people of his town to actually call the fire department when there are fires. 

“I used to think a wedding was a simple affair.” - Father of the Bride (1991) 

Father Of The Bride’s George Banks beautifully sets up the movie with an opening monologue that occurs during the events of his daughter, Annie’s wedding (which is one of the most beautiful movie weddings, I might add). He speaks directly to the audience as he says while he thought the above words, “he was wrong!” Thus, it becomes the setup of the 1991 comedy. 

“Let me close this conversation by saying that you are one unique individual.” - Planes, Trains, Automobiles (1987)

Steve Martin is certainly a unique individual, with a unique career, full of hilarious quotes. As his Planes, Trains & Automobiles partner in crime, John Candy delivers some hilarious quotes of his own in the 1987 movie, Martin’s Neal responds with the actor’s usual snippy charm we all know and love. 

Given the actor's many laugh-out-loud quotes from the '80s and '90s, it reminds us of what a talent Steve Martin has been and continues to be. May this list inspire you to revisit one of these classics. 

If you’re anything like me, then life has largely become a series of gaps in existence in between seasons of Only Murders in the Building. OK, maybe that’s something of an exaggeration. However, it is one of my favorite shows out there. So bunch of images recently posted by Selena Gomez of “The Trio,” that aren’t even of the show itself, still have me wishing the next season was here right now.

The actress posted a series of pics to Instagram, most of which are just of her with either Steve Martin, Martin Short or both. But every picture has them smiling and clearly just loving being in each other’s company. This is one of the most wonderful on-screen teams, and I need more of it as soon as possible. Few trios are as iconic as those three, and I'm eager to see more of them. Thankfully, we know that we’re getting another season of the show. That’s a good thing not only because I just want more of the show, but also because the Only Murders Season 3 ending dropped a brutal cliffhanger. Avid viewers surely know that in the episode, one of the show’s more entertaining recurring characters. Clearly, just being in the Arconia is a bad idea if you want to keep on living.

We’ve known for years that Steve Martin and Martin Short were an amazing duo. I’ve been personally been a fan of theirs, both as a duo and as individual performers, for as long as I can remember. But who could have known that the person missing to complete the set was Selena Gomez? The three are absolutely perfect foils for each other, while still loving each other and making the main characters' relationship the real centerpiece of the show -- more so than whatever mystery they are attempting to solve. 

In an era where so many streaming shows don’t survive a single season, Only Murders has thrived, meaning there was no question in anybody’s mind that it would continue. It seems likely that the only thing that will ultimately end the show is the creators and stars making the choice to wrap things up. Because the show’s quality has remained strong through all three previous seasons. 

We don’t know when Season 4 of Only Murders in the Building will arrive. Previous seasons have started in late summer, but there's reason to be worried we may have to wait a bit longer this time around. It is possible the strikes may have pushed that window back since writers could not get to work until the labor dispute was resolved. We could talk forever about our favorite SNL actors and their funniest sketches, but when was the last time we showed our appreciation for the people who were the real brains behind the operation? That is what we intend to do here as we look back at some of Saturday Night Live’s most celebrated bits and characters as we share the stories behind those who wrote them into reality.

NPR's Delicious Dish: Schweddy Balls (Ana Gasteyer)

The glorious piece of suggestive comedy that is “Schweddy Balls” is just one — let alone, arguably, the funniest — edition of a recurring sketch called “NPR’s Delicious Dish,” which was the brainchild of one of its stars, Ana Gasteyer. The Happiest Season cast member recalled to NPR — of all places — that she was still part of the improv comedy troupe, The Groundlings, when gastronomic radio shows from LA called “The Splendid Table” and “Good Food” inspired her to write the bit. 

Close Encounter (Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell)

We have SNL actor Mikey Day and writing partner Streeter Seidell to thank for what is widely considered one of Kate McKinnon’s best SNL sketches, “Close Encounter.” According to Day and Seidell’s talk with Vulture, they knew that host Ryan Gosling would not be able to stop laughing at Colleen Rafferty’s horrendous experience with an alien abduction because he wasn’t able to hold it together during any of the rehearsals.

The Olympia Cafe (Don Novello)

Comedian Don Novello is best known for playing Father Guido Scarducci on SNL, but he is also the unsung hero of “The Olympia Cafe,” which some may recognize better as the “cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger” sketch. According to Ultimate Classic Rock, the bit was inspired by an actual Chicago restaurant called the Billy Goat Tavern, which Novello and the sketch’s star, John Belushi, would frequent.

Matt Foley: Van Down By The River (Chris Farley, Bob Odenkirk, And Robert Smigel)

After seeing Chris Farley perform at Second City as his character, Matt Foley, Bob Odenkirk was inspired to write the sketch that introduced the motivational speaker to SNL in 1993. However, as the former Breaking Bad cast member revealed on Hot Ones, it was Robert Smigel’s last-minute idea for Farley to fall down onto the table.

More Cowbell (Will Ferrell) 

According to Rolling Stone, the faint sound of the cowbell on Blue Öyster Cult’s “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” inspired Will Ferrell to write a now-classic sketch — that Christopher Walken believes ruined his life — revolving around the one playing the obscure instrument on the 1976 hit. He later discovered from an SNL art department employee whose father worked on the Agents of Fortune album that he had unwittingly captured the characteristics of the song’s real cowbell player… save the low-cut sweater and overzealous gyration.

Church Chat (Dana Carvey And Rosie Shuster)

On an SNL 40th Anniversary retrospective by People, Dana Carvey recalls performing as the Church Lady in his pre-SNL days at clubs, where he spontaneously improvised her famous catchphrase, “Isn’t that special?” He teamed up with writer Rosie Shuster to develop the character’s SNL debut, leading to the creation of “Church Chat” — which Carvey would revive as a host in later years.

Wayne's World (Mike Myers)

According to Primetimer, when Mike Myers showed then-SNL writers Conan O’Brien, Robert Smigel, Bob Odenkirk, and Greg Daniels his idea for “Wayne’s World,” they politely advised him against pitching it in the writer’s room. Well, the joke is on those nobodies because the sketch — a cable access program filmed in Wayne’s (Myers) basement and co-hosted by Dana Carvey’s Garth — was a huge hit that inspired one of the best SNL movies ever.

Haunted Elevator (Ft. David S. Pumpkins) (Bobby Moynihan, Mikey Day, and Streeter Seidell)

Wanting to break free from the political-heavy humor of SNL’s 42nd season, Bobby Moynihan, Mikey Day, and Streeter Seidell — after much trial and error — crafted a sketch for the Halloween show featuring a strange man who would become one of Tom Hanks’ best SNL characters: David S. Pumpkins. According to Vulture’s oral history, the trio was astonished by the success of “this dumb, dumb thing” that even inspired an animated special on NBC the following year.

Mom Jeans (Tina Fey)

In an interview with Jess Cage for Sirius XM, Tina Fey recalls purchasing a “really unfortunate pair of jeans” at J. Crew, and she decided to use that as fuel on writing night at Studio 8H. The result was one of SNL’s funniest commercial parodies, for which the future 30 Rock cast member and creator wore a prosthetic stomach and rear end.

MacGruber (Jorma Taccone)

Played by Will Forte, easily distracted special forces agent MacGruber was first envisioned by Jorma Taccone — one-third of the Lonely Island — according to Vanity Fair’s oral history. Having later spawned a feature film and a Peacock original series, you could argue that the recurring sketch hit a level of attention that resembled the love for the TV show that inspired it, MacGyver (whose star, Richard Dean Anderson, cameoed in one edition).

Two Wild And Crazy Guys (Dan Aykroyd, Steve Martin, Marilyn Suzanne Miller)

In collaboration with writer Marilyn Suzanne Miller (according to Ultimate Classic Rock), Dan Aykroyd partnered with SNL host hall-of-famer Steve Martin to create the Festrunk Brothers, who are better known as the “wild and crazy guys!” The Czechoslovakian swingers became a staple of the show, and they would return in more recent years alongside another famous duo: Justin Timberlake and Andy Samberg’s highly inappropriate R&B singers.

Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton Address the Nation (Seth Meyers)

One of SNL’s sharpest pieces of political satire sees Sen. Hillary Clinton (Amy Poehler) struggling to remain civil during a non-partisan appearance alongside Gov. Sarah Palin (Tina Fey) in response to the latter’s Vice Presidential nomination. According to Vulture, then-head writer Seth Meyers penned that legendary SNL cold open, which also featured a few jokes by Poehler and Fey and Palin’s iconic line “I can see Russia from my house,” courtesy of Late Night producer Mike Shoemaker.

Stefon (Bill Hader And John Mulaney)

At The New Yorker Festival in 2014, Bill Hader recalled how a flamboyant barista he frequently bumped into and a strange email John Mulaney received about an aspiring club owner’s bizarre ideas — including “a room full of broken glass” — were the catalysts for Stefon. Hader also mentions that he tested the character in a particularly forgettable sketch opposite host Ben Affleck before making him Weekend Update’s city correspondent. The former Barry cast lead has never been able to play the role without laughing and covering his face, thanks to Mulaney’s last-minute cue card additions and Seth Meyers’ immaculate patience.

Lazy Sunday (The Lonely Island, Chris Parnell)

Chris Parnell was SNL’s resident rap star before the emergence of The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer), which is why they asked him to collaborate on a music video about him and Samberg seeing The Chronicles of Narnia. As they recall in Variety’s oral history, “Lazy Sunday” made SNL Digital Shorts a celebrated event, skyrocketed The Lonely Island’s stardom, and, most importantly, dawned a new era of viral comedy.

The Coneheads (Dan Aykroyd)

In the book Live From New York: The Complete Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, Dan Aykroyd recalls how he was watching TV in a heightened state of mind, and he noticed that people’s heads rarely hit the top of the screen. This gave him the idea for a sketch about characters with noggins that are several inches taller than the average humans, who eventually became the out-of-this-world family known as The Coneheads. 

Celebrity Jeopardy! (Norm Macdonald)

As the late Norm Macdonald revealed to Howard Stern (via SoundCloud), we have SCTV to thank for "Celebrity Jeopardy!” The comedian — who also played Burt “Turd Ferguson” Reynolds — took inspiration from the Canadian sketch comedy series’ game show parody “Half Wits” when crafting this recurring bit featuring Will Ferrell as an Alex Trebek driven mad by absent-minded famous people and taunting from Sean Connery (Darrell Hammond).

Debbie Downer (Rachel Dratch And Paula Pell)

Rachel Dratch recalled to Salon that while vacationing she told someone at a communal dining table that she was from New York, to which the stranger replied, “Were you there for 9/11?” That ultimately inspired her to team up with Paula Pell — with whom she later reunited for Wine Country — to create the character Debbie Downer, whose debut SNL sketch did not go as planned, but was all the more memorable for it.

Spelling Bee (Will Forte)

On a Reddit AMA hosted by Will Forte (via AMATranscripts.com), one user asked if the actor’s insanely long misspelling of the word “business” in Season 31’s “Spelling Bee” was recited as written or all spontaneous. The MacGruber cast lead revealed that the bit originated from his days on the improv comedy troupe, The Groundlings, and that he would have listed off even more random letters in the SNL sketch if he wasn’t being directly followed by musical guest Neil Young.

The Ladies Man (Tim Meadows, Dennis McNicholas, and Andrew Steele)

A character as lewd and crude as Leon Phelps might not be so successful these days, but, then again, it’s hard not to be charmed by any role portrayed by Tim Meadows. While promoting the 2000 movie, The Ladies Man, the Mean Girls cast member revealed to The Crimson that the lispy voice was his biggest contribution to the character, who was initially conceived by Dennis McNicholas and Andrew Steele.

The Californians (Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, And James Anderson)

While speaking to Seth Meyers on Late Night, Bill Hader shared how he and Fred Armisen would kill time before table reads by mockingly describing how they would get around in LA while donning over-the-top West Coast accents. Sometime later, Hader learned that Armisen and writer James Anderson took that gag, made it into a soap opera, and, thus, “The Californians” was born.

Girl Watchers (Conan O'Brien, Robert Smigel, Bob Odenkirk, And Greg Daniels) 

Retired late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien actually came up with a few of Tom Hanks’ best SNL sketches, such as “Girl Watchers,” in which the Oscar winner and Jon Lovitz comment on their losing streak with the ladies with contrarian confidence. O’Brien shared on Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert, how he jokingly demonstrated this characteristic on a whim while hanging out with fellow SNL writers Robert Smigel, Bob Odenkirk, and Greg Daniels, who all worked together to turn into the classic sketch.

Hans And Franz (Kevin Nealon And Dana Carvey)

While Arnold Schwarzenegger has never hosted SNL, he would make a cameo alongside fellow Austrian bodybuilders, Hans and Franz. It probably comes as no surprise that the Terminator star — who was even interested in doing the scrapped Hans and Franz movie — is also the inspiration for the characters. Kevin Nealon told Juice that it all started when he and Dana Carvey caught an interview with the actor on TV that compelled them to talk like him for days.

Diner Lobster (John Mulaney And Colin Jost)

Season 43’s “Diner Lobster” was an instant classic that started a tradition of Broadway-inspired sketches anytime John Mulaney hosts SNL, but its road to success was longer than you may think. The comedian and Weekend Update anchor Colin Jost revealed in a featurette that they actually wrote the sketch eight years earlier, but no one wanted to touch it at the time.

Lunch Lady Land (Adam Sandler, Bob Odenkirk, Tim Herlihy, And Allen Covert)

One of Adam Sandler and Chris Farley’s funniest collaborations was a musical sketch set to a song called “Lunch Lady Land,” which the Uncut Gems star did not write himself. According to Uproxx, his co-composers were Bob Odenkirk, Tim Herlihy (father of Please Don’t Destroy’s Martin Herlihy), and Allen Covert.

Weekend Update: The Iceberg On The Sinking Of The Titanic (Bowen Yang And Anna Drezen)

The bit that made Bowen Yang one of SNL’s biggest stars was his viral “Weekend Update” appearance as the Iceberg that sank Titanic, who believes he is the real victim of the tragedy. He spoke to former SNL star-turned-Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon about how writer Anna Drezen texted him about the concept months before they decided to give it a try, despite not having much faith in it at the time.

Mary Katherine Gallagher (Molly Shannon)

Apparently, an unnamed SNL writer did not believe that Molly Shannon’s character Mary Katherine Gallagher had a chance of making it onto the show, as she told People in 2015. Luckily, the nervous schoolgirl did make it onto air and the White Lotus cast member’s energy and commitment to the role made her a hit. Even Whitney Houston would agree to appear alongside this superstar.

What Up With That? (Kenan Thompson, Bryan Tucker, And Rob Klein)

According to Rolling Stone, Kenan Thompson — the longest-running SNL cast member — came up with an idea in 2009 for a talk show host who becomes obsessively unable to stop singing his own theme song. After bringing the idea to fellow writers Bryan Tucker and Rob Klein and teaming up with musical director Katrees Barnes for the song, the idea eventually made it onto the show as “What Up With That?” which became a recurring hit.

Target Lady (Kristen Wiig)

Academy Award-nominated SNL star Kristen Wiig could be the show’s greatest female cast member, judging purely on the amount of diverse characters she has brought to the table, such as “Target Lady.” She told James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio that the role — originally conceived for The Groundlings — was inspired by an actual Target cashier she met with an “eggy” voice.

Papyrus (Julio Torres)

Ryan Gosling gives one of his funniest performances ever in a pre-taped SNL bit as a man driven insane by the fact that the logo for one of the most popular movies of all time, Avatar, is just a modified version of the common font “Papyrus.” Julio Torres told EW that this was initially a joke he used in stand-up until the Oscar-nominated actor suggested turning it into the hilarious viral hit that even James Cameron responded to.

Super Bass-O-Matic ’76 (Dan Aykroyd)

A 12-year-old Dan Aykroyd once witnessed his aunt — a Canadian cooking show personality — dump a whole fish, bones and all, in a blender for a bouillabaisse. That story, which he revealed to The Food Channel, was his inspiration for one of his funniest faux infomercials, “Super Bass-O-Matic ’76.”

The Barry Gibb Talk Show (Jimmy Fallon, Steve Higgins, Ken Scarborough)

Out of Jimmy Fallon’s many great collaborations with Justin Timberlake, one of the funniest is “The Barry Gibb Talk Show.” While having the actual surviving Bee Gees as guests on Late Night, Fallon recalled how he and his future sidekick, Steve Higgins, actually crafted the sketch together with fellow writer Ken Scarborough, who went on to become the head writer of Sesame Street.

Foreign Man: Mighty Mouse (Andy Kaufman)

On the very first episode of SNL, Andy Kaufman appeared, nervously starring at the audience while playing the theme song to Mighty Mouse and only exhibiting a more confidant demeanor to lip-sync the lyric, “Here I come to save the day!” According to Fandom’s SNL wiki page, the very bizarre bit — something totally on brand for the legendary comedian — was a branch of his character known as “Foreign Man,” which was one of his earlier and most iconic acts.
