Netflix adds more new content to the 2026 TV schedule and 2026 movie calendar than just about any other platform or TV network. We're now heading into the back half of the year, with a variety of exciting new movies streaming and other options to dig into. The finale film for Heartstopper will finally arrive, along with a fun behind-the-scenes special wrapping Nick and Charlie's relationship. A slew of new movies from around the globe will debut as well, along with stand-up, wrestling, and other fan-pleasing genres.

Sweet Magnolias Season 4 came to the early days of the 2025 TV schedule for those with a Netflix subscription, and brought fans something that’d been a long time coming: Helen and Erik finally becoming a couple and actually getting engaged! Their relationship has seen some serious (mostly Ryan-related) complications throughout the years, but Helen finally got her mind right, she and Erik both dropped their early Season 4 significant others and made good on all that chemistry. Now we know that the fifth season is filming and has cast a character who’s important to the Decatur-Whitley union, and I think it’ll mean something big for the duo.

Who’s Been Cast In Sweet Magnolias Season 5 And What Could They Mean For Helen And Erik Going Forward?

A few weeks ago, when we found out that Sweet Magnolias Season 5 was already filming and would definitely bring us a new dynamic between Helen, Dana Sue, and Maddie now that the latter has taken a job in New York City, we also heard that Erik and Helen would be biscuits deep in wedding planning mode. With that, I made my feelings known about wanting the small town romance to beef up the Whitley and Decatur family sightings as we head into the celebration, and a new cast member is going to help do just that.

Tudum has revealed that Iman Benson (who portrayed Ilonka in Netflix’s The Midnight Club) has been cast as Erik’s niece, Jessica Whitley. The site also notes that the new character will deliver some “unexpected news” to the engaged twosome. While that could literally be anything under the sun, I believe it’s going to mean something major for the couple.

As we know, Helen and Erik have been through a lot emotionally in the lead up to them falling for each other. Erik came to Serenity to embark on his new career as a chef after losing his wife, Vera, while she was pregnant with their first child. Helen, meanwhile, put up with enough bullshit to power a nation of billions when dealing with her looooooong-time on/off boyfriend, Ryan, including realizing she was pregnant after they’d broken up for the umpteenth time and going through a heartbreaking miscarriage soon after, which Erik supported her through.

Seeing as how things are finally on a definite upswing for both of them now (and Ryan and other potential romantic partners are FINALLY out of the picture for good), I can’t help but think that these two might be able to expand their family sooner rather than later, and it’s all because of Jessica.

Sure, she could come to town and do something wild like deliver word that she’s going to pay for them to have their wedding in Paris, but I think it’s a lot more likely that Erik’s young niece is going to reveal that she’s pregnant. Both parties will be immediately supportive and helpful, and considering that each of them have already lost children, want kids, and have been surrogate parents to younger folks in town like Cece and the newly out Isaac, I fully expect them to suggest one of two things.

Either Erik and Helen will invite Jessica and her baby to stay with them so they can help her raise the kid so she can have enough direct support to continue her education/career, or they’ll offer to out-right adopt or raise her baby. I cannot imagine a better way for them to start married life than by jumping right into having a full house, because this is something they both want one day and they are mature enough to handle that responsibility without it derailing their romance.

Obviously, I don’t know for sure what will come with Season 5, but a move like this would be great for Helen, Erik, and the fans. Come on, just let them be happy, Sweet Magnolias!!

Romantic drama fans got quite the treat early this year when those of us with a Netflix subscription were able to watch Sweet Magnolias Season 4 on the 2025 TV schedule. My initial worries about where the small town drama would take Helen, Dana Sue, Maddie and everyone else in Serenity, South Carolina after the somewhat disappointing third season were blissfully left in the dust, as fans were given copious amounts of drama and surprising twists and very welcome reveals. Now that Season 5 is filming, the cast has given up details that have me wanting some specific things for a certain couple.

What’s Been Said About Sweet Magnolias Season 5

Those who’ve already checked out the fourth season will know that Sweet Magnolias really delivered when it came to surprises, like Bill’s shocking death and Maddie accepting a job that will take her, Cal and her kids to life in New York City for the upcoming season. But, other big news we got involved the star-crossed coupling of Helen and Erik, as the town’s legal ace and the talented chef finally (FINALLY!) entered into a real romance and then became engaged in the finale.

After an image of Heather Headley, Brooke Elliott, and JoAnna Garcia Swisher on set for the new season was released to TV Line, Headley opened up about what she wants to see now that Erik and Helen are in wedding-prep mode, and said:

Look, while I totally agree that this wedding needs to be epic on a scale that hasn’t been seen before on the show (even considering Dana Sue and Ronnie’s whole-town vow renewal celebration at the end of Season 3), there are some other things I really want from this shindig and the lead up to it.

I Want More Of Helen’s Family And To See Erik’s For The First Time

One of the things that myself and lots of fans love about this show is how interconnected everyone is in this small town. Everyone has strong ties to others in the community which allows for lots of drama, secrets, romantic pairings and so many of the other things we’ve come to love about Sweet Magnolias.

And, while Helen grew up in Serenity and is pretty much universally beloved by her fellow townsfolk, her mom (Bev, played by The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Janet Hubert) and brother Zeke moved to Tampa. We’ve seen Bev twice, and Zeke and his family only once. Meanwhile, all we really know of Erik’s family (seeing as how he didn’t grow up in town) is that he has a brother, and their father used to take them hiking, and that it was his grandmother’s recipes that helped him cope after his wife, Vera, died while she was pregnant.

With a special occasion like a wedding coming up it makes complete sense that the Decaturs and whoever is left of the Whitley family should be heading to town to help out with the planning or attend the big day. At this point in the series, we should know at least as much about Noreen and CeCe’s families as that of two major characters like Helen and Erik. None of Erik’s family has even met Helen yet!

So, here’s hoping that the series gives us lots of good lovin’ between the duo and a fabulous wedding day, while also delivering more backstory on their strong family ties and how they became the awesome people everyone in town knows today.

Sweet Magnolias Season 4 was recently delivered to those with a Netflix subscription early in the 2025 TV schedule, and it did not let us down. Though I had my doubts about what fans would get after Season 3 disappointments, and wanted to see several things from the fourth outing of the romance, the drama managed to bring viewers some big surprises, especially where Maddie is concerned. This included the end of Episode 2, which revealed that her cheating, perpetually screwing up ex-husband, Bill (played by Chris Klein), had gone off and died. Now, the showrunner has opened up about why they did it and how Klein responded.

Why Did Sweet Magnolias Kill Off Bill And How Did Chris Klein React To The News?

While fans who quickly binged all of Sweet Magnolias when the fourth season debuted will know that it gave us lots of wonderful things (like the acknowledgement of Black women as capable leaders, and additional LGBTQ+ rep with Isaac), and the finale gave us a major shock by introducing Maddie’s “invigorating” next chapter, that was hardly where the big moments ended.

The last minute or so of the second episode saw Maddie (who’d recently married Cal) suddenly confronted with her former mother-in-law, Bonnie, who unceremoniously announced that Bill had died. This means that the last we'll see of an alive Bill Townsend as portrayed by Chris Klein came in the Season 3 finale, and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson spoke to Deadline about the decision and how the actor took the news, and said:

Luckily, the American Pie star is a pro, and didn’t take it badly when he learned that the character he’d portrayed for three seasons was being cut loose in dramatic fashion to “reset” the “journeys” of his many friends and family back in Serenity. In fact, it could easily be said that his death is what really kicked off the majority of the drama this season.

As we’ve learned throughout Sweet Magnolias, Bill had nearly always been a (sometimes lowkey) screwup who seemed to have it all figured out, but absolutely did not. The respected town doctor cheated on Maddie with his nurse, Noreen, and got her pregnant. Then managed to also alienate Noreen by acting like a jackass.

He also cheated on Maddie when they were still in high school, which led to current mayor Peggy having Isaac in secret back in the day and giving him up for adoption before returning to town. With so many in town connected to Bill, it really did cause pretty much everyone to rethink a lot of things about their lives, including likely helping Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue make some big (positive) changes. Anderson continued:

Speaking about her “am I with who I want to be with” comment, if we have Bill Townsend’s death to thank for Helen and Erik finally breaking up with their significant others, getting together and getting down in Season 4, then I don’t think anyone can be mad at it!

When Sweet Magnolias returned for Season 4 on the 2025 TV schedule, I was incredibly hopeful for several things. I wanted the romantic show to seriously up its drama from the somewhat disappointing Season 3. I needed to see Helen and Erik finally get together for real. And, in the back of my mind, even though I didn’t say it out loud or write about it, I really wanted something for Dana Sue that hadn’t been present for her character since the first season.

So, let’s look at an aspect of the small town romance (and about Dana Sue specifically) that’s been bugging me since the series started. First, though, I'll start with some reasons I do love the series.

Look, I Truly Love All Of The Diversity On Sweet Magnolias

One of the reasons that I and many other fans with a Netflix subscription can’t wait to binge all of the dramatic happenings in Serenity, South Carolina whenever a new season of Sweet Magnolias arrives is because of how diverse the town is. There are characters who give us LGBTQ+ representation like Isaac, important characters who represent a wide socioeconomic range, from Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue’s relatively well-off families to someone like CeCe, whose family is working class.

Of course, there are also the townsfolk who come from a lot of racial and ethnic backgrounds and show a wide spectrum of human physical diversity in other ways. This includes Dana Sue, who’s one of the three titular characters and also shows fans some much needed size diversity that we still don’t frequently see on television or in movies (or in music for that matter, but I digress…).

Just the fact that Dana Sue is a plus-sized woman whose story isn’t centered around wanting or needing to lose weight, or her health in general (despite the one episode in Season 1 where we saw her pass out and have to make some changes because of her predisposition to Type 2 Diabetes) is a game-changer (though it shouldn’t be by this point in time).

She’s a busy professional who owned her own restaurant where she was the head chef until Season 4, she’s a mom, and she’s been allowed to have a lot of life experiences over the course of the series, including being flirty, dating and having hot, against-the-wall-sex on occasion. I love what the show has done with Dana Sue!

But I Really Wish Dana Sue, As The Only Plus-Sized Character, Had A More Varied Wardrobe

I gotta tell ya, this has been a huge sticking point for me throughout the show. So much so that, when going back to Season 1 when Dana Sue’s clothes first started to bother me, I had erased what little variety there was in her outfits. So, here’s the issue; she’s in basically the same silhouette 90% of the time. It’s either her chef uniform or it’s this:

Listen, I’m not knocking this look in general. It works, and she's never looked bad on the show. But, to see Dana Sue in what is essentially the same outfit (floaty dress with a belt and floaty sleeves) but in different colors and patterns (And sometimes full length! Or maybe with a different neckline!) all the time is just a nonsensical shame.

Also, can we please get her some new belts? Anyone who isn’t plus-sized and notices fashion would think that there are only two belts that big ladies all over the world just pass around like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Waist-Cinchers, and y’all…That. Ain’t. IT!

Obviously, I know nothing about the behind-the-scenes stuff that has gone into this decision making process. For all I know, Dana Sue’s portrayer, Brooke Elliott, is more comfortable in that look than any other and prefers it. All I want is for there to be way more sartorial variety to suit the spunky, sexy lady that we’ve come to know Dana Sue as. I feel like Season 4 trended in an upward direction, so I have hopes that if Sweet Magnolias returns for a fifth go-round, things will be even better!

The 2025 TV schedule has been quick to reward fans of small town drama, as Sweet Magnolias returned in early February for those with a Netflix subscription. While I had several things I wanted from Season 4 of the Serenity, South Carolina-set romance (after a sorta slow start it did deliver, especially with major surprises for Maddie), I wasn’t expecting to really get something out of the season that made me feel good as a Black woman who already loved the show. Let’s take a look at how Sweet Magnolias Season 4 leveled up when it came to its representation of Black women.

Peggy And Helen Were Always Important To Serenity, But They Have Way More Responsibility In Season 4

One of the things that I already loved about Sweet Magnolias was that there was a good representation of a pretty wide cross-section of ethnicities/races/sexual preferences across the board. We had Trotter and his husband Ashley for LGBTQ+ rep (with Isaac’s sexuality being confirmed in Season 4), and numerous characters who weren’t white but were important to both the drama and the town as a whole.

These include Helen, of course, as one of the Magnolias and the main legal ace in town, and also Peggy, who began the show as one of the town’s local newspaper reporters who was in everyone’s business, for better or worse. Season 3 saw the Magnolias realize how corrupt the mayor was, and help get him out of office. Helen then became campaign manager for Peggy, with the latter being installed as mayor by Season 4 and convincing a reluctant Helen to help her overhaul the town’s fucked up finances as interim town manager. And, as we saw, they had a lot of work to do.

It's Wonderful To See Black Women Being Trusted For Their Political And Business Savvy On A Large Scale

Basically, this meant that two Black women had been entrusted with the future of the town, and after generations of having one corrupt, white family full of shitbirds in charge and doing everything from giving sweetheart deals to their friends to outright stealing town funds. Peggy and Helen were given the reins and trusted for their political and business savvy on a huge scale, when the town could have balked at Peggy as mayor simply because she had no background in politics.

I Also Loved Seeing How The One-Time Frenemies Fully Bonded AND Helped Another Black Woman Rise In Serenity's Ranks

If you’ll recall, Peggy and Helen were clearly not buddies in Season 1. In fact, it wasn’t until Helen helped Isaac find his birth mother, who turned out to be Peggy (she’d had him in secret in high school), in the second season that the one-time gentle frenemies started to bond. Well, having to handle making budget cuts and finding all of the corruption the previous mayor left behind really saw the two become actual friends. I love Black women being friends and fully supporting one another!

Also, while Henrietta has been around since the first season as the assistant to that long line of Lewis mayors who were slowly running the town into the ground, Season 4 saw the older Black woman (who admitted to being treated like “wallpaper” by those mayors) really step up. But, that was because Peggy and Helen gave her an opportunity to step up, and she did such a good job being “steady, insightful and even innovative,” as Peggy put it, that she and Helen decided to make Henrietta the new permanent town manager. I LOVE Black women helping other Black women rise in the ranks!!

Not For Nothing, But Including Pastor June, There Are Now Four Black Women Helping To Guide A Whole Town

Since the first season, Pastor June has been the spiritual leader of choice for much of Serenity. When Dana Sue and Ronnie got back together, they went to her for relationship counseling. When Maddie was having issues with Cal, she got closer to June and they started hanging out as buddies.

Now, with June still important to Serenity, Peggy as mayor, Henrietta as town manager and Helen as the always brilliant and amazing Helen…there’s a whole (fictional…sigh) town that’s trusted the heart of its leadership to four Black women and it really felt good for us to be seen in those positions of power, kicking ass, taking names and doing it all while looking fabulous!

We don’t know yet if Sweet Magnolias will return for Season 5, but you can bet I’ll be watching if it does!

The 2025 TV schedule delivered a lovely winter treat when Sweet Magnolias Season 4 became one of this year’s new Netflix movie and TV show releases in early February. Anyone who maybe didn’t love Season 3 was rewarded for coming back to Serenity, South Carolina, as the finale gave viewers a major Maddie-related surprise for Dana Sue and Helen going forward, but the season, overall, also finally saw one character’s sexuality be confirmed, and I totally get the showrunner’s reason for revealing it now.

What Did Sweet Magnolias’ Showrunner Say About Confirming That Big Character’s Sexuality?

Probably, like many fans, I was hoping that Sweet Magnolias Season 4 would seriously deliver in several areas, but, one thing I didn’t even consider was the story finally confirming that Isaac (Chris Medlin) is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. The small town drama, of course, had representation on that front since Season 1 with Trotter and his husband, Ashley, but we hadn’t gotten the opportunity to watch any such new couple start their romantic lives.

Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson spoke with Deadline about why now felt like the correct time to both confirm Isaac’s sexuality, and give him a love interest, saying:

That “man from his past” ended up being a friend/rival from college named Michael (Kyle Findley), who showed up in Serenity to look over damage from the nearly devastating storm that passed through town. When he and Isaac finally crossed paths, it was abundantly clear that there was a spark there, even though Isaac still hadn’t had what many would call a traditional “coming out” where he told all of his friends and family in town about his sexuality.

It actually really makes tons of sense that Anderson and her team of writers were waiting to confirm Isaac’s sexuality. The young chef came to town from Ohio in the first season and quickly began making friends, but was hiding the fact that he was only there (originally) to look for his birth parents. Then, of course, he had some tearful moments with Erik and Dana Sue, separately, where he had to ask about whether or not they could be the people he was looking for, but was let down.

The second season saw the question of Isaac’s parentage become a major storyline, with the eventual shocking reveal that town reporter Peggy and Bill (Maddie’s dumb, philandering ex-husband) had an encounter while away on a school trip. Though Peggy and Isaac are slowly getting to know one another, and it seems to be going fine, because Bill left such a trail of emotional destruction in his wake, he was not on good terms with Isaac by the time he left town at the end of Season 3.

The most recent season brought Bill’s hateful and inconsiderate mother, Bonnie, to town, and she carelessly told everyone who’s come to matter to Isaac that he’s Bill’s son, which no one but Maddie, Bill, Isaac and Peggy had known.

Basically, Isaac has had A LOT to deal with and figure out, on top of getting used to a new town, making new friends, finding out he has a whole parcel of half-siblings, and having info he wasn't ready to have revealed blown wide open, so I completely understand that the character needed some mental space before tackling the idea of dating, publicly or not.

Luckily, Isaac and Michael did just enough flirting that by the end of the season we finally got to see them kiss at a town Christmas celebration for all to see. It also appears that they could still be an item if the show is renewed for Season 5, with Anderson noting that she looks “forward to the chance and the hope of being able to ponder what happens next,” and I’m sure many Sweet Magnolias fans do, too!

Last week brought a welcome treat for anyone with a Netflix subscription who adores romance, as fans were finally able to enjoy Sweet Magnolias Season 4 during the 2025 TV schedule. I know I had high hopes for the fourth outing of the small town-set romantic drama, and not only did the show deliver some welcome twists, it also gave viewers a major surprise by the finale that I doubt many saw coming. Now, star JoAnna Garcia Swisher has opened up about why she believes that Maddie’s next move is going to be “invigorating.”

What Did Sweet Magnolias’ Joanna Garcia Swisher Say About Maddie After The Season 4 Finale?

I will admit, the first two episodes of Sweet Magnolias Season 4 (which became one of the 2025 Netflix movie and TV show releases recently) had me questioning whether or not I am actually a good person, because I was quite bored of nearly everyone in Serenity being so nice, complementary and helpful to everyone they encountered.

Luckily, it wasn’t long before the surprises started to roll out, with the season finale delivering the biggest one: Maddie took a job in the big city and told her besties about it. And, we’re not talking Charleston, which would make it relatively easy for her, Dana Sue and Helen to keep up their in-person margarita nights at least once a month, but Manhattan, all the way in New York City. Maddie’s portrayer, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, recently spoke with TV Insider about her character’s decision to take the job and what she hopes it means for her going forward, and said:

Not, of course, that Maddie wasn’t good at the work she was doing at the spa she runs with Helen and Dana Sue, or the Magnolia foundation. But, for her to embrace a position in marketing (which is what she studied in college) and take on a big adventure by moving away from home to do it could lead to her experiencing a completely different level of career fulfillment.

While Sweet Magnolias Season 3 was a bit of a letdown for me in terms of drama, I can’t help but commend everyone this time around for giving us a life-changing scenario to end the season. All of the Magnolias have spent the time we’ve known them as very committed Serenity stans, with all of their roots being firmly planted in town. Never in a million years did I expect any of them to even honestly consider living somewhere else, much less go ahead and do it! Of Maddie’s next chapter, Garcia Swisher also said:

With Maddie and Cal having surprised all their friends and family with Halloween party nuptials to wrap the first episode of the season, and then having to come to terms with a lot of things when it came to Bill, his legacy and what’s next for her own kids, Garcia Swisher seems to think that now was the right time for Maddie to begin focusing on what she needed for herself.

And, even though there were a few times during the season when Dana Sue and Helen were disappointed that Maddie hadn’t shared something with them, all that friendship breakup stuff from Season 3 was forgotten when she told them she’d accepted the job. Her buddies immediately started working on ways for them to fill in for her at the spa and continue their friendship with Maddie in New York.

While we don’t know just yet if Sweet Magnolias will be renewed for Season 5, I can’t help but hope we get to watch this new adventure unfold for Maddie and see how she, Helen and Dana Sue deal with such a huge change.

If you have a Netflix subscription, then you likely know something about Sweet Magnolias. The warm-hearted, small-town romantic drama is coming to the 2025 TV schedule for Season 4 on February 6, and while this is one of several shows like Virgin River, there are some major differences. For one thing, not only is the series earlier in its run, but the Season 3 finale left me with much to be desired, to the point where I was surprised that the streamer renewed the show for a fourth go-round.

Having said that, I’m definitely planning to watch what Dana Sue, Helen and Maddie get up to this time around, but there are some things I really need to see in Sweet Magnolias Season 4. Let’s get into them!

The Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Finale Had Zero Cliffhangers

Overall, while I was very excited to watch Sweet Magnolias Season 3, I was, unfortunately, left disappointed. The bulk of the problem for me was that the season lacked drama, though it took me a while to realize that’s what I was missing. Then, we got to the finale, which I was fully expecting to leave me with a number of questions and big cliffhangers to think about like the previous two season finales, but… it didn’t.

No, pretty much everything was left either tied up or with the denizens of Serenity, South Carolina headed down much better paths than they had been previously. Which is great... but only in real life! It’s hard to keep romantic drama viewers invested when there is very little drama and basically all the romances seem set when you end a season. So, you know, Imma need them to do better this time around.

But, I'm Still Intrigued By Season 4, As Long As They Deliver Certain Things

The first two seasons of Sweet Magnolias were filled with will-they-won’t-they tension, people causing all kinds of trouble for the Magnolias and their loved ones, and several surprises that I doubt anyone saw coming. The show will need to come bursting out of that third season finale to up the tension, drama and stakes on several levels for it to reach the crescendos of Seasons 1 and 2 as far as I’m concerned. I have several ideas of how the team behind the show should do that.

I Need To See A Full-On Romance With Helen And Erik

My goodness. I know that we’re not following a full year in these people’s lives with each season or anything, but that actually makes it much worse that Helen has basically broken up with sweet chef Erik TWICE (I say “basically” because they weren’t really a couple the first time) over the course of three seasons to go back to her dumb on-again-off-again ex-boyfriend, Ryan.

By all that is holy, I need these two, who are clearly drawn to one another, to finally get together and, yes, get it on! And, I don’t want that at the very end of the season, either. By the time Season 3 wrapped, it was obvious they were on their way to being solid friends again, so let’s put some speed on this romance like it’ll literally explode the whole town if it doesn’t happen, mmmkay?

Everyone Else Can't Stay So Comfortably Coupled Up

As we all know, the romantic prospects of our favorite characters is the main point of a romantic drama, but one thing that disappointed me by the end of the third set of episodes was that nearly everyone was comfortably coupled up. I mean, even Pastor June and Maddie’s mom have men now!

Again, great for real life if that’s what your circle of friends and family want, but it’s no bueno for a series, especially when those couples don’t seem to be facing any future challenges. Someone needs to break up, cheat, consider cheating, start a bad habit, realize they’re actually related to their significant other or… something! If their lives don’t seem to be more stylish AND more romantically confusing than ours, why are we watching?!

I Hope We Get Some Shocking Reveals

Remember the mystery about who Isaac’s parents are? Oooooooh, boy! When that info was finally revealed in Season 2, it had a ripple effect for Maddie (Bill’s his dad, of course) and also went a long way toward explaining why Peggy (Isaac’s mom) had always been so snotty toward the Magnolias, especially Helen. Season 4 needs that kind of revelation; something that will shock viewers and either change things in Serenity or for our Magnolias.

Small towns are supposed to be filled with secrets (that’s what TV and movies have taught me, anyway), so there have to be some more intriguing nuggets about the relationships between the townspeople that can be teased and then found out by just the right folks (or just the viewers) to keep all us fans talking.

The Series Needs A Good Trouble-Making Character

One of the things I’ve loved about this series is that we got some adversaries for our leads who eventually showed different sides of themselves, and turned out not to be one-dimensional baddies. Mostly, they either made bad choices because they were stressed or because they just didn’t know how to do better, and I was cool with that because it’s very reflective of real life.

However, this means that by the end of the third season we were mostly without people to cause trouble in Serenity. Bill and Kathy got together and left town, CeCe is well on her way to being a properly studious and responsible young woman who can do what’s best for herself without hurting others, and even Noreen has been forgiven enough for having an affair with Bill while he was married to Maddie and having his love child that she can now call all the Magnolias friends!

If the hated Mary Vaughn isn’t back in some capacity to cause trouble (her family moved away from town in Season 3), then we’re going to need at least one trouble-maker who will not be redeemed!

Please, Give Us Drama, Drama, Drama!

Finally, all of this boils down to Season 4 needing to deliver a lot of drama to keep us invested. Take us back to the near-soap opera levels of twists, turns, deceptions and surprises. We need some potentially life-threatening situations, dirty town politics, little white lies that spin out of control, relationship setbacks, and maybe a cold-case mystery involving stolen money or a missing child that can be solved, OK?

Alright! I don’t want to have to have this conversation with you before Season 5, Sweet Magnolias, so I’ll be watching!

These days, when the name Chace Crawford comes up, his role as The Deep in The Boys – which just finished airing its latest season on the 2024 TV schedule – probably comes to mind first. However, he’ll always and forever be known for his role in the Gossip Girl cast as Nate Archibald too. Now, we’re getting a blast from the past as Sweet Magnolia’s JoAnna Garcia Swisher opened up about working with Crawford, and how her trip to New York City to make out on screen with him led to a life plot twist that involved her now-husband, Nick Swisher.

Now, when you look at the relationships in Sweet Magnolias, Garcia Swisher plays a pivotal role in them. She’s one of the show’s leads, and at the end of Season 3 her character Maddie is still with Cal. Meanwhile, in the grand scheme of Gossip Girl relationships, her role as Bree Buckley didn’t play a big role at all seeing as she was only in four episodes.

However, it ended up being a life-changing job for the actress, because that’s how she met her husband. She dished about this cute story with She Knows, explaining:

For a bit of context, JoAnna Garcia Swisher appeared in four episodes (specifically, the first, second, third and fifth episodes) of Gossip Girl’s third season, which aired in 2009. She played a love interest of Nate’s, who he met over the summer, and they had a very short-lived and dramatic relationship – which is par for the course on this show.

They had a passionate relationship, that did involve making out, and it ended with a bang and betrayal.

In real life, Garcia Swisher’s romance had a much happier ending. She went on to explain that she met her husband in the big city, and they got married in 2010. It sounds like an adorable meet-cute, as she explained:

At the time, Nick Swisher, who is a former professional baseball player, was playing for the New York Yankees, who won the World Series in 2009. So, that year was a very good one for this couple!

According to People, the two dated for less than a year before getting engaged in May of 2010. Now, they’ve been together for 14 years, and they have two kids – Emerson Jay Swisher, who was born in 2013, and Sailor Stevie Swisher, who came into the world in 2016.

The two are still thriving too! JoAnna Garcia Swisher has been leading the Sweet Magnolias cast since 2020, and the series has been renewed for a fourth season. Meanwhile, her hubby retired from playing baseball in 2017, and now he’s a special advisor for the Yankees and the co-owner of Baseball United, per his Instagram.

Now, don’t think I forgot about where this story began. Chace Crawford is doing fantastic too! He’s part of one of Amazon Prime’s best shows – The Boys – and that’s about to head into its final season.

And to think…all of this started because of Gossip Girl. I guess there’s a reason why she says “You know you love me.”

If you have a Netflix subscription and you’re anything like me, it means that you binged Sweet Magnolias Season 3 as soon as it hit the streamer on July 20. While the cliffhangers of the Season 2 ending were all wrapped up by the time the credits rolled on the small town drama’s third outing, every fan of the goings-on in Serenity, South Carolina knows that the big news always involves the characters’ relationship statuses.

And, this season didn’t disappoint on that front, as some relationships got stronger, while others fell apart and surprising new ones blossomed. If you need help keeping up with all of the romantic entanglements and where they stand at the end of Sweet Magnolias' third season, we have all the juicy details you need. So, let’s get to it! (Season 3 spoilers ahead!) 

Dana Sue And Ronnie

Though I still mourn the romance that could have been between Dana Sue and adorable Farmer Jeremy (more on him later), at least I can now fully get behind the frequently stressed chef and her no longer estranged husband, Ronnie. He returned to town at the end of Season 1 to give Dana Sue some financial support, and the duo ended up working out their troubles (she kicked him out before the beginning of Season 1 because he’d cheated on her) in counseling.

Not only do they seem to be stronger than ever by the end of the third season, but they are still in couples counseling to keep that bond they’ve rebuilt, and the heat/love between them was repaired enough that the finale saw them renew their vows in front of dang near the whole town. I ain’t mad at it!

Maddie And Cal

I thought for sure that this romance was going to be dealt a crushing blow after Cal lost his job and then his cool to the point where he got arrested for punching a fan inside of Sullivan’s at the end of last season. What would happen to Cal was one of the big questions fans had after Season 2, but it turns out that he was able to quickly right his anger-filled ship, and Maddie was there to support him.

Maddie was on her own “journey” in Season 3, but she and Cal realized that they still wanted to be in a relationship. After having a talk and deciding to slow things down a bit (they took a two-week sex break) for a time so they could fully recommit to one another, it was pretty much smooth sailing, with them even being able to weather a meeting with Cal’s toxic ex, Vicky, with no problems. Good job, y’all!

Helen And Ryan

Well, my stars! One of the big cliffhangers of the second season involved Ryan popping up in the finale and springing a proposal on Helen, after saying just months prior that he didn’t want to live in Serenity or have kids with his very long-time, on-again-off-again girlfriend. Unfortunately, she was just as stuck on him as always, so despite her burgeoning romance with Erik, Helen let Ryan back into her life and they began dating again. 

As many fans likely expected, this tenuous bliss did not last, as Ryan’s resolve to stick around and not globe trot was already clearly wearing thin by half-way through Episode 6, and the end of that installment saw him break Helen’s heart yet again when he told her he couldn’t stay and left town, ending their relationship for the umpteenth time.

Helen And Erik

You had better believe that Erik, kind and thoughtful though he may be, was incredibly angry about Helen going back to Ryan, and no one can blame the man for that! He then spent a lot of time trying to get over the loss by taking a long break from Sullivan’s (partially so that he wouldn’t have to see Helen on a regular basis). This led to Erik meeting and beginning to date newcomer Genevieve, who’d come to town to interview for a job at the Magnolias' spa, which she eventually got.

Erik and Helen had a few tersely polite run-ins after she told him she was going back to Ryan, and then even after he left her again, she knew it was best to keep her distance from Erik. By the end of the season, he’d found out from someone else that she and Ryan were no longer together and it looked like they were on a path to at least become friends again (they’re obviously still hot for each other), but we don’t know if that automatically means the end for Erik and Genevieve.

Annie, Ty, And Jackson

These crazy kids just don’t know what they want, and that actually makes sense, seeing as how most of the adults barely do, either. We all know that Annie had a long-standing crush on Ty that he didn’t reciprocate in the first season, with him instead dating CeCe. But, when Annie and Ty’s baseball nemesis, Jackson, began dating in Season 2, good ol’ Ty started to see what he was missing.

Ty was single this season (CeCe rightfully broke up with him when she saw how he reacted to Annie’s new romance), and acted as a mostly supportive friend to Annie as she dated Jackson, who’s family moved away suddenly during the season. However, that move put a big strain on the relationship, and while Ty was starting to get closer to classmate/statistics tutor Olivia, Annie’s romance with Jackson fell apart. She then broke up with Jackson in the Season 3 finale, and ran to Ty for comfort. The last time we saw them, Annie and Ty were holding hands (IN PUBLIC!), so it’s not impossible that a potential Season 4 could finally see them date.

Kyle, Nellie, And Lily

I think everyone was probably surprised, after Kyle and Nellie kissed in Season 2, that she wasn’t holding on to her torch for him (She’d had a crush on him while he was crushing on Annie… who had a crush on Ty…these kids, right?) after her mom forbade her and older brother Jackson from dating any Magnolia offspring.

Kyle spent most of the season pining for Nellie and assuming she was his secret admirer, but Episode 9 (after Nellie confirmed she’d moved on with someone else) let us in on the real lady who’d found herself stuck on Kyle: “older woman” Lily, who’s been best known so far as Annie’s gossip-happy buddy. She finally told Kyle how she felt about him, kissed him in front of all the kids, and the two agreed to go on a date. Awwww!

Bonus: Surprising Connections!

I think this set of episodes have seen more characters get together than any other. While Dana Sue, Helen, Maddie and their assorted children were going through their own romantic ups and downs, we saw a lot of secondary and tertiary characters find love (or something like it). These include the surprisingly (and delightfully) flirty Pastor June with her new bingo friend, David; Maddie’s mom Miss Paula and her art patron, Jimmy; and Peggy and her old journalism school comrade, Charles.

Even more shockingly, Farmer Jeremy has struck up a romance with Noreen, and was seen bonding with her and Bill’s daughter at Ronnie and Dana Sue’s wedding reception, while Bill began dating Ronnie’s estranged sister, Kathy, and the two even left town together in the finale. Hell, even Dr. Howie (Who we now know once dated Helen!) had himself a date for the wedding, so it seems that nearly everyone will be on the way to getting down should Sweet Magnolias return for Season 4!

Well, after waiting for over a year, those with a Netflix subscription who enjoy small town romance have now finally been able to indulge in Sweet Magnolias Season 3. The cliffhangers of the Season 2 ending left fans with a number of major questions to ponder, along with Helen needing to make a big decision and multiple other characters’ lives being thrown for a loop. 

And, let me tell you, I binged the 10-episode season as soon as I could set my eyeballs on it, because I was really excited for one of my favorite shows to finally return. However, I found myself feeling disappointed by the half-way mark, and then realized after watching all of the episodes that…you know, I didn’t actually love Season 3. So, let’s dig into why I was disappointed by what went down in Serenity, South Carolina this time around.

Helen Dumping Erik And Going Back To Ryan Made No Sense

This might have been the biggest disappointment of the season for me. After Helen and Ryan had tried in Season 1…again (for the millionth time across literally 20+ years of dating on and off) to be a couple despite their incredibly different life goals, they broke up yet again and the second season saw Helen finally get a lot closer to chef Erik. 

However, after dumb Ryan popped back up in the finale and proposed, Helen went ahead and dumped sweet, kind, considerate Erik like a hot rock so she could hightail it back to the man who can’t stay in town and doesn’t want kids! 

Look, I get the necessity of having the proposal slow things way down between Erik and Helen, but there is no way in HELL that it made any sense for her to willingly go back to Ryan after he’d just broken her heart, not years ago, but mere months prior.

Why on earth would she believe that he was suddenly ready to stay in Serenity and procreate when he’d just told her that he couldn’t do either, which led to their breakup in the Season 1 finale? Her decision, frankly, made me livid and I’m glad Erik was able to start moving on. Of course, Ryan was only in town for a few months before he broke up with Helen AGAIN after telling her he couldn’t be rooted in the only place she’s willing to call home, AS COMPLETELY EXPECTED, and left her an emotional mess for the second time in about a year.

That woman did this to herself, and I hate that the show is making me lack faith in her because of how needlessly connected to Ryan she’s allowed herself to be! 

Maddie And Cal Faced No Real Challenges

With all the pre-Season 3 talk of Cal “dealing with the aftermath” of punching a fan in the finale and Maddie having “a little bit uncomfortable” of a “journey” this time around, I thought for sure that there would be some heavy conversations and trials ahead for those two. But…nope.

I mean, sure, Cal had to figure out what he was going to do after being fired in the second season (he decided to become a carpenter) and Maddie was still figuring out how to have a full life without her marriage (she started hanging out with Pastor June and took an art class), but aside from them taking a two week sex break (which didn’t seem difficult at all), they were basically a solid, boring couple throughout with neither going through anything major so…what was the point of them even being here?

Dana Sue And Ronnie's Kathy Trouble Wasn't That Intriguing

We’d been promised that the mysterious woman, Kathy, who was shown slashing the tires on Sullivan’s delivery vehicle near the end of Season 2, would be a “meteor” who’d upend everything, so I can only imagine that many viewers thought she was going to be the woman that Ronnie cheated on Dana Sue with, who’d returned to town.

Instead, I (and likely many other fans) was surprised when Kathy turned out to just be Ronnie's sister, who had been expecting to take over the restaurant that became Sullivan’s instead of Dana Sue. While I do come to Sweet Magnolias for family drama, this isn’t what I was hoping for, and even though she tried to fully lure Erik away from the restaurant while he was on his Helen-prompted break, and definitely trashed the place, she didn’t cause the kind of dramatic twists I was expecting. Plus, she relented as soon as Ronnie gave her a bunch of money and left town after apologizing. 

If other super interesting stuff had been taking place this season, this storyline wouldn’t have felt like such a dud. Speaking of which…

Overall, Season 3 Lacked Drama

The first half of the season, especially, suffered from this. Even with Helen living in her horrible choice to give Ryan another shot, things were going pretty smoothly for the Magnolias. By the time Kathy made a scene at Annie’s birthday party about halfway through Episode 5, I had already spent at least two episodes wondering where the season was going and if anything was going to actually happen. 

I thought for sure that Maddie and Cal meeting up with his ex-girlfriend later on would lead to big drama, but even that turned out to be something that was solved with one conversation. Where were the twists, turns, and multiple people making bad decisions?!

The Friendship Breakup Was Great, But Didn't Happen Soon Enough

Episode 5 also saw Maddie (especially) and Dana Sue challenge Helen a bit on the idea that she was fully happy with Ryan again, which led them to have a big friendship breakup that lasted for three episodes. I would have loved it if this was the main focus of the drama this time around, and it happened much earlier in the season. 

These ladies have been friends their whole lives; it would have been interesting to see who they are without each other’s constant support and how they changed/dealt with issues without the other two to lean on. Instead, things were repaired fairly quickly and it didn’t add much to the lack of dramatic tension in the season.

Nearly Everyone Is In A Relationship Now

With just a few notable exceptions (Helen, CeCe, and Isaac) pretty much everyone else in town managed to find a romantic partner in just a few months. Pastor June, Peggy, and Maddie’s mom all found dudes by the end of the season. Annie broke up with Jackson, but it looked like she and Ty would start to get close again. 

Farmer Jeremy, who was heartbroken when Dana Sue took Ronnie back, started getting close to Noreen and bonding with her baby, and while Kyle was upset when Nellie confirmed she was dating someone else, he rebounded with “older woman” Lily by the season’s end. Even cheating Bill and vengeful Kathy started dating and eventually left town together. How? Is this how small town life works? It makes little sense, and is just another aspect that leaves things too neatly wrapped up for my taste, leading to my last point.

I Wish There Was A Cliffhanger And Solid Setup For A Potential Season 4

Listen, I do want the characters to find happiness, but you’ve also got to give us some good drama to keep us invested. Otherwise, we’re just watching a slightly less boring/more fashionable version of our own lives. At the end of the season, we didn’t get a big car accident, or any surprise proposals, all we got was nearly everyone in town happy and paired off into a couple as they celebrated Dana Sue and Ronnie’s vow renewal, and it looked like Helen and Erik would work their way back toward being friends.

Yes, there are places for the show to go if it gets Season 4, but why would it with how it wrapped with everyone in a pretty solid place and no big shocks to help propel the story forward? I was honestly surprised to see that the cast has spoken about where things could go in the future, as I watched the last two episodes and thought, “Well, I guess this is it and they know it’s not coming back. They wrapped up just about everything!”

I’d be likely to give Sweet Magnolias a watch if it, somehow, does come back for a fourth season, but I doubt I’ll be excited for it like I was with Season 3.

It won’t be long now before romance lovers with a Netflix subscription are able to revisit the amorous adventures of Helen, Dana Sue, and Maddie when Sweet Magnolias returns for its third season on July 20. Fans will likely recall that the Season 2 ending left Serenity’s citizens in some intriguing places, especially with regards to their romantic prospects, and this was particularly true for Helen. Now, star Heather Headley has opened up about her character’s big decision in Season 3, and it really does sound like things are going to be rough for a while.

What Did Heather Headley Say About Helen’s Decision In Sweet Magnolias Season 3?

Seeing as how it’s been well over a year since the second season hit the streamer, it would make sense if you can’t quite remember what Helen’s big shock was in the finale. After growing closer than ever to Erik, who spent much of the season helping everyone’s favorite small town lawyer through some intense personal troubles, the final minutes saw Helen’s extremely long-term, on-again/off-again love, Ryan, pop up outta nowhere and propose to her. When speaking to Us Weekly recently, Heather Headley opened up about the choice Helen now has to make in Season 3 and how it will affect her and her friends, saying:

WOW. Alright, the first thing I noticed about her comment is that she’s going to go through a “journey” with whether or not she chooses the completely unsuitable Ryan or the basically perfect (and absolutely perfect for her) Erik. This would seem to mean that it’ll take more than an episode or two for Helen to figure out what she wants, which is…ridiculous. I mean, Helen, girl, there’s a reason you and Ryan haven’t been able to work things out across 20+ years of trying to be together, OK?

Secondly, while a decision like this could obviously blow up Helen’s world, it doesn’t quite follow that the same would be true of the lives of her fellow Magnolias, Dana Sue and Maddie. They’ve both seen how good their buddy is with Erik, and seem to totally approve of Helen finally leaving Ryan behind. 

So, this makes me think that whatever option she lands on will have both of her besties reconsidering their own recent romantic decisions in some way, and/or lead us down a deeper path when it comes to digging into the roots of their friendship and what it means for them now, which is something JoAnna Garcia Swisher alluded to not long ago.

What is good is that it seems that Helen’s journey in Season 3 will lead her closer to “her mom (Janet Hubert) and her family,” who we’ve never seen and don’t know much about, so that viewers finally get some understanding of who she is and how she grew up. Though it sounds like things are about to get really messy for her, Headley did offer a bit of hope that the situation will work out for the better by the end, and added:

Fans will be able to see how it all shakes out soon, and here’s hoping that the ever-intelligent attorney makes the right choice. (Erik. The right choice is ERIK!)

After an interminable wait of nearly a year and a half, everyone with a Netflix subscription who simply adores romantic drama will be able to return to the small town of Serenity, South Carolina when Sweet Magnolias returns later in July. Now, though, it sounds like a potential Annie and Tyler romance will be on hold again for the third season.

How Is Sweet Magnolias Keeping Annie And Tyler's Romance On Hold For Season 3?

If this show is good at anything, it would be keeping a number of amorous plates in the air for the denizens of our favorite southern town. While Helen, Dana Sue, and Maddie have definitely seen some dramatic ups and downs in their love lives across two seasons, and will encounter similar trials and triumphs in the new episodes, it turns out that the upcoming Sweet Magnolias Season 3 will find teens Annie and Tyler in a mostly platonic place. According to TVLine, the near couple will be spending lots of time with one another, but only as friends.

Apparently, most of the season will see Maddie’s son “mostly be a sounding board (and occasional chaperone)” to Dana Sue’s daughter, especially when it comes to her fledgling relationship with Jackson, which began in Season 2. It’s thought that all of Maddie and Bill’s (older, at least) kids will be “in for some heartache this season,” so it sounds like Ty might not exactly be cool watching Annie enjoy time with Jackson.

The series is known for its complicated romances, and long-time fans will likely recall how much of a sure thing a more-than-friends bond between Annie and Ty has seemed for the entire series so far. The first season saw things change a bit with the lifetime friends, as we were introduced to them by the time Annie was already harboring one mighty crush on the high school’s star pitcher. Ty left her feelings unrequited (despite her planting a kiss on him), and began dating CeCe, but Season 2 changed the Annie/Tyler dynamic yet again.

That’s when Annie and Ty’s baseball nemesis, Jackson, began to get close. Ty didn’t like what he saw there at all, even with him being in a relationship with the ever more serious and interesting CeCe. And, when good ol’ CeCe saw how annoyed he was by Annie and Jackson’s romance, she (rightfully) saw fit to dump Ty, who was clearly now far more into Annie than he’d previously been.

So, while fans have been hoping that these two crazy kids could just go ahead and start dating, it looks like the timing just isn’t right yet. But, with a show like this, who knows what surprises the season finale might bring on this front? Sweet Magnolias returns on July 20, so we’ll see soon!

When we first met Maddie in the first season, she was in the midst of a very difficult divorce from her cheating high school sweetheart of a husband, Bill. Not only had he made their family the talk of their small town by having an affair with a much younger nurse at his practice, but he also got that nurse pregnant. Now, Garcia Swisher has spoken about how that event will affect her character in Sweet Magnolias Season 3, telling PopSugar:

One could certainly say that Maddie’s “journey” post-Bill has already been quite “uncomfortable,” so it makes sense that there will still be a bit of that left for her. Not only has she had to try and get past what her ex did to her and their family, but her burgeoning romance with Cal has proven that moving on, even with someone she really cares about, isn’t going to be easy.

By the end of the second season, the relationship statuses of all of our favorite characters had changed, and not always for the better. It seemed like that could have been true for Maddie and Cal, as not only did the episodes see him forced to reveal his anger management issues to her, but it also saw him fired from the high school (because of that damn, hateful Mary Vaughn) and that quick temper on display for much of the town to see.

We’ve already been told that Cal will be “dealing with the aftermath” of that shocking moment, but it’s almost a certainty that his actions will lead to some of what Maddie’s feeling as Season 3 gets rolling. Luckily, though, it does sound like she won't be going through it for nothing, as Garcia Swisher noted that viewers will see that better days are ahead for the divorced mom of three.

One of the ways she survives her troubles, is, of course, her fellow Sweet Magnolias, Helen and Dana Sue, and the star continued by saying that the romantic drama is going to get into their bond, and others, a bit more:

Let’s not forget that several of the guys (like Trotter and Cal, and Erik and Isaac), and others in town have their own strong friendships, so it’ll be nice to have the series more fully explore all of that, along with the many romances, going forward.

Even though viewers who love watching a romantic drama have lots of options in said genre if they enjoy using their Netflix subscription, it has still felt like a woefully long time since fans have been able to see the next romance-based adventures on Sweet Magnolias. The Season 2 ending meant some big changes for Dana Sue, Helen, and Maddie, largely in their somewhat messy personal lives, as the relationship status for each was a bit different by the time things wrapped up.

Well, it certainly took long enough, but on May 25, 2023, Tudum revealed some great news, when it was announced that Sweet Magnolias Season 3 is set to hit the streamer on July 20! When speaking with Parade in February os the same year, star JoAnna Garcia Swisher was asked about when the show would finally return, and she was only able to confirm that it would be a part of the Netflix new releases this year. Luckily, she was correct and we don’t have too much longer to wait!

Heather Headley, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, And Brooke Elliott Will Return

It was roughly a year ago, on May 4, 2022, that the streamer announced the series would return for a third go-round, and with that reveal came word that the leading trio of Heather Headley, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, and Brooke Elliott would all be returning to their roles as Helen, Maddie, and Dana Sue, respectively. Though we haven’t heard any official news so far regarding potential new cast members, it is expected that most of the important players from past seasons will also be seen again. This means that actors like Dion Johnstone (Erik), Justin Bruening (Cal), Chris Klein (Bill), and Jamie Lynn Spears (Noreen) will also return.

You Can Now Watch The Trailer

We've been without new footage from the upcoming season for quite a while, but that all changed when the trailer for the third set of episodes dropped on June 30, 2023. Take a look!

There don't appear to be a ton of new scenes in the two-minute trailer, but at least we can tell that there will be a lot of relationship drama and supportive friendship to go around!

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Will See The Ladies Work Through Difficulties Brought On By Season 2

A lot happened over the course of Sweet Magnolias Season 2, especially when we consider the big events of the season ender, and from the official synopsis of the third season (which was released by Tudum in late May 2023), it sounds like Dana Sue, Helen, and Maddie will be deep into dealing with everything when we see them again:

While we don't know how much time will have passed when Season 3 picks up, it sounds like there won't be too much of a time jump, if any at all, since all of the Magnolias will still be wrestling with major decisions in the aftermath of the second season.

Maddie Is Doing “Self-Reflection” In Season 3

As with many other details on the show right now, we don’t have a full breakdown of what the story will entail when Season 3 starts up. But, when Garcia Swisher spoke with Parade earlier this year and gave fans hope that we will see the show return in 2023, she also opened up about what her Maddie would be doing after the reveals of the Season 2 finale, and said:

Viewers will likely recall that though Maddie and her boyfriend, Cal, had patched things up and stayed together after their falling out in the Season 1 finale. That didn’t mean it was totally smooth sailing for the love birds in the second season, though, as Cal was forced to tell Maddie about his time in rehab for anger issues (which led to other problems I’ll get into in a bit), she and her buddies had to deal with Mary Vaughn over some political issues, and found out that Bill fathered Isaac while they were in high school. So, it certainly makes sense that good ol’ Maddie will have a lot of thinking to do about how she moves forward in several areas of her life in Season 3!

Cal Will Be “Dealing With The Aftermath” Of His Actions From Season 2

Oh, Cal! That argument he had with Maddie at the end of the freshman season was just the tip of the maybe-this-guy’s-too-good-to-be-true iceberg. After he had to come clean to Maddie, Cal then got fired from the high school over his previously hidden anger management problem (which the hateful Mary Vaughn tried to blackmail him over before initiating his dismissal), and then his anger from that led him to attack an unstable fan at Dana Sue’s restaurant and get arrested. You can bet he’ll be suffering the blowback from these events in Season 3, and Cal’s portrayer, Justin Bruening, told People in November 2022:

Despite how things went for Cal last season, it sounds like he’ll be ready to take responsibility and work everything out when we see him again in the third season!

Season 3 Began Filming In July 2022, And Production Wrapped In October

Even though we still don’t know for sure when the show will return, we do know that they began filming Season 3 back in July 2022, when the writer’s room posted on Instagram about production getting started, and Garcia Swisher letting her followers know, as well. Luckily, filming seems to have gone as planned, because they were then able to wrap in October of the same year, which the writer’s room posted about on Twitter, and noted that the upcoming episodes will be “worth the wait.”

It sounds like we’ll be treated, once again, to a fantastic season when Sweet Magnolias does finally return! For now, you can revisit what’s come so far by checking out Seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix.

If you’re anything like me, this means that you’ve been positively dying for any and all info you can get on what’s to come, especially after that cliffhanger-filled Season 2 ending, but now we’ve finally gotten an update from star JoAnna Garcia Swisher that should really get fans ready for margarita night!

What Did Sweet Magnolias' JoAnna Garcia Swisher Say About Season 3?

Viewers who adore watching the ups and downs endured by Helen, Dana Sue, and Maddie on the small town drama had no trouble convincing ourselves why we need Sweet Magnolias Season 3, and luckily we didn’t have to wait too long for that renewal to be announced. However, the following months haven’t exactly been bursting with details on the coming episodes, and we still don’t have a release date. Well, when speaking to Parade recently, the former Reba star was asked if the new season was coming in 2023, and said:

OOOOoooooWEEEEEeeee! Does anyone else have heart palpitations right now? Even though Maddie’s portrayer couldn’t offer up any concrete debut details for the series, she seems pretty confident that it’ll be ready for our eyeballs “before you know it,” so I cannot help but hope that we’ll get a trailer soon that will announce its imminent release. In the early spring perhaps? Please say it’s so, Netflix!

There were a lot of new beginnings, stalled starts, and surprising twists in our favorite Serenity relationships at the end of last season, so I’m especially excited to see what the actress could mean by the new episodes having “a whole new feel and look” and “digging a little bit deeper.” The biggest update on the stories for the third season that we’d gotten thus far came near the end of November 2022, when Justin Bruening (who plays Maddie’s somewhat troubled beau, Cal) noted that we’ll see his character dealing with his shocking actions at the end of the previous season, which will lead to him starting “to really become a member” of the town he now calls home.

Speaking of which, Garcia Swisher continued, and said that Maddie is now really trying to find herself after witnessing Cal’s behavior:

Combine this with her tease about the end of the new season (and later saying that viewers will “start to feel like there are new beginnings”) and I can assure you that there are probably already millions of us attempting to “manifest” Season 4! Until we get more information on what’s to come when Sweet Magnolias hits the 2023 TV schedule, you can rewatch the first two seasons on Netflix.

Folks? The second season of Sweet Magnolias debuted way back on February 4, and we've gone a long time without any concrete information on the storylines that will be explored in Season 3. Fans with Netflix subscriptions have lots of questions about how the reveals of the previous season will be carried forward into the next set of episodes, as well as wanting to know about how all of the relationships at the center of the tale will fare after some bombshell moments in the Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ending. Now, we finally have some solid details about the third season, and imma need the hit show to return ASAP!

What Do We Know About The Story Of Sweet Magnolias Season 3?

While we do, indeed, know that the small town romance was renewed for another season, and the show’s official Instagram page confirmed that filming was done with a post on October 21, we still know next to nothing about how things will play out when the show hits the small screen once again. But! Star Justin Bruening (who recently reunited with his Grey’s Anatomy wife, Sarah Drew, for a 2022 Christmas movie) has now opened up to People about what his Cal Maddox will be dealing with after his shocking Season 3 ending, and said:

I know that a lot has happened between early February and now, but if you are completely in the dark with regards to his comment about Cal punching someone, well, you’ve forgotten a pretty big moment in the last episode of the previous season. When Cal and Maddie went to a fancy fundraising event, he briefly talked with a fan who seemed a little…emotional. Cal handled the situation just fine, but days later, the same man showed up in Sullivan’s and was making quite a scene. Things went from bad to worse when the recently fired high school baseball coach let his anger boil over, he punched the man, and ended up in the custody of two of Serenity’s fine police officers.

Look, I like Cal, you like Cal…everyone likes Cal and his muscles (What? Who said that?!), but I cannot wait to see how everything shakes out for him in Season 3 after basically assaulting someone (even if that someone pretty much had it coming). To a certain extent, once he arrived in town, he became sort of a golden boy. Not only is he a former pro baseball player, but he was a new eligible gentleman around town. 

Maddie was going through one hell of a breakup with cheating Bill, so Cal seemed like a particular blessing to her. However, there were some hints that he wasn’t as perfect as he appeared, and by the end of Season 2 it had been revealed by the petty and prosperous (and much hated) Mary Vaughn that Cal had a hidden history with major anger management issues, which got the man fired from his job.

Now, with him being publicly outraged to the point of punching someone in front of a number of townspeople, well, I think we can all see that he will definitely be taking “a step backward” and needing to deal with the fallout from that. Those in the small locale gossip like crazy when people make big mistakes, which definitely makes one wonder just how badly he’ll be treated when the new season starts. But, it sounds like Cal will be able to come back from what he did in the eyes of his neighbors and (most importantly) Maddie.

I’m really going to need to watch this play out as soon as possible, because I have so many questions about the multiple quick turnarounds Cal has already been through! Like, now that he’s jobless, how’s he making a living? He can’t just walk around shirtless and sopping wet all day fixing people’s leaky sinks…Or can he? We’ll find out when Sweet Magnolias returns for Season 3, until then you can revisit Seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix.

It has now been nearly three months since the Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ending on Netflix, and we still don’t know whether or not the show has been renewed. After its first season, it took roughly two months for the streamer to announce that we would get more episodes, so the delay does have me (and surely other fans) slightly worried that Season 3 is not yet a foregone conclusion, and the small town romance might still land on the Netflix cancellations list.

I think that viewers who love the drama can agree that Sweet Magnolias left us with a number of big questions that we want answers to, as well as leaving major Serenity romances in surprising places, so I’d like to offer a plea in the hope that the streaming gods hear it and make Netflix renew this dear show. Here, now, are my four reasons why Sweet Magnolias needs Season 3 on Netflix.

Sweet Magnolias Has Hit The Netflix Top 10 In Both Seasons

OK, this is purely for the bigwigs at Netflix, but I imagine that every show the streamer backs does need to keep them happy in as many ways as possible, and ratings are one way to do that. It would be pretty easy to ding Sweet Magnolias for not being even remotely edgy, or for being just a few steps above what you’d get from a Hallmark made-for-TV movie (I’ll get to those points more in a bit), but the fact is that people clearly enjoy it. 

Each season has hit the Netflix Top 10 shortly after its debut. While the reason for the freshman installment becoming popular could have been simple curiosity (Who doesn’t try to check out as many new things as possible on Netflix once they drop?), that isn’t so for the second season. Season 2 came along just a bit before Valentine’s Day in 2022, and made it into that Top 10 very quickly. Sure, it was smart of the streaming giant to give one of its romance-focused scripted shows the boost of hitting right before that particular holiday, but if people didn’t actually like what they saw, it wouldn’t have been able to stick around on the chart, even after Inventing Anna and Love Is Blind Season 2 took it out of the top spot and knocked it down to number three.

It's A Feel-Good Drama And We Need More Of Those

I will readily admit that I was surprised by the fact that I enjoyed Sweet Magnolias as much as I did, but by the time Season 1 came out I had already discovered my softer side with Hallmark movies and another Netflix-based small town romantic drama, Virgin River. But, I think one of the reasons so many people do love watching Dana Sue, Helen, and Maddie live, laugh, love, and drink margaritas in Serenity, South Carolina is because we get a lot of soapy, dramatic goodness without all of the intensity of a prestige drama.

Sometimes you want the drama without having to worry about which of your favorite characters will suddenly be set upon by zombies and have their assorted body parts eaten right in front of you. The stakes for every TV drama don’t have to be as high as on Game of Thrones, Ozark, or Better Call Saul, alright? Maybe I don’t want to sit down, after a long work week that was also filled with terrible real-world news, and watch a basically decent-ish dude get his face crushed in by someone’s bare hands! 

What I, and lots of people, want at least sometimes is a show that feels like it’s wrapping me in a warm, soothing hug. Sweet Magnolias is like a tiny light at the end of a tunnel, showing that life absolutely sucks more than we’d like, but it usually isn’t the absolute end of the world. The show might make you angry or tearful every now and then, but you won’t feel totally destroyed after watching humanity’s worst instincts play out during the course of a 50 minute episode. There’s nothing wrong with a feel-good drama, and that’s what we get in Sweet Magnolias.

The Series Also Has Lots Of Intriguing Twists

I can totally understand why Sweet Magnolias has been referred to as a slightly sexier, Hallmark-style show. Like I said above, it’s got the feel-good romantic drama aspect down. But, something that Sweet Magnolias excels at even more is making sure that viewers feel like they have to keep watching by throwing intriguing twist after intriguing twist at us. Speaking of which…

Sweet Magnolias Cannot End With So Many Cliffhangers!

Look, this really is the biggest reason of them all when it comes to why Sweet Magnolias needs to be renewed for Season 3 on Netflix. Remember, way back in the opening of this article, when I talked about all of the questions that the sophomore effort left fans with? Well, by my count, the series ended with roughly 40,000 cliffhangers if you count all of the complicated romantic plots, and, you know…THAT’S TOO DANG MANY!!

What is Helen going to say to Ryan’s surprisingly sudden proposal now that she’s newly dating Erik (but clearly still has big feelings for Ryan)? What’s the deal with that surprising new character who accosted Annie and also slashed the tires on Dana Sue’s delivery van? Is Maddie going to stick with Cal after witnessing how out of control his anger can be? Will Mary Vaughn ever not be a dick? Who’s going to challenge Trent in the mayoral election? Can Jackson really be trusted with Annie’s heart? Will sweet farmer Jeremy ever find love? I mean, the big questions just go on forever, you guys! 

Listen, Netflix bosses. I know you’re paying attention. There are scores of completely dedicated fans out here who want to know the answers to these and many more Sweet Magnolias questions, and we will all have to take to our fainting couches if we don’t get a chance to explore more of what these characters have to offer in Sweet Magnolias Season 3. 

You’ve got a really popular show on your hands, and while it might not be the buzziest drama that ever buzzed for you, you can bet that a renewal will eventually net you another Top 10 season of television. So, get to it, y’all! 

The small town romantic drama, Sweet Magnolias, has been a big hit for Netflix, and made even more recognizable faces out of the many actors who portray our beloved (and very much hated) denizens of the fictional Serenity, South Carolina. But, many fans probably already knew several of those in the Sweet Magnolias cast from other projects, including JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who first really came to fame on the sitcom, Reba. It turns out, though, that the Sweet Magnolias connection to Reba goes beyond Garcia Swisher, as her co-star, Brandon Quinn, also appeared on the early 2000s comedy. 

Who Did Brandon Quinn Play On Reba?

For those whose memories of Reba McEntire’s 2001-2007 WB sitcom are fuzzy, the show centered on her character, Reba Hart, after divorcing her cheating husband, and her new life as a single mother balancing work, her ex and his new love, and her three children. The oldest of those kids, Cheyenne, was a recent high school graduate / newlywed / new mom, who was played by JoAnna Garcia Swisher.

While Garcia Swisher and Brandon Quinn (who plays Ronnie on the Netflix series) typically don’t have many scenes together on Sweet Magnolias, they did, in fact, share his time on Reba. Quinn had one scene on the comedy back in 2005 (via PureWow), during the Season 4, Episode 15 entry “Flowers for Van,” which saw Quinn play a flower delivery man who brings a bouquet to Cheyenne. In fact, if you skip to the 9:51 mark in the video below, you can see the Reba scene for yourself:

Yes, the moment is brief, but can’t you tell that that’s Sweet Magnolias’ sorta troublemaking Ronnie Sullivan that you’re looking at in the clip? It would be nearly 20 years before Quinn and Garcia Swisher shared the screen again, but I can bet that most Sweet Magnolias fans would say that it was well worth the wait.

While Garcia Swisher plays Maddie (who’s one of the trio of leading ladies known as the Magnolias around town) on the Netflix hit, Quinn’s Ronnie was introduced late in Season 1 as the estranged husband of one of Maddie’s besties, Dana Sue. And, while you certainly can’t tell from watching Quinn’s appearance on Reba, he’s definitely good at playing someone in a complicated romance who’s kinda bad, but still hard to stay away from.

No one who watched Ronnie come back to town and slowly wriggle his way back into Dana Sue’s heart, despite her swoon-worthy new romance with farmer Jeremy, could forget all of the simmering sexual tension Quinn helped to create with Dana Sue’s portrayer, Brooke Elliott (though he wasn’t the most suitable love interest, as far as I’m concerned). 

It wasn’t long before good ol’ Dana Sue cut Jeremy loose (He was heartbroken!) and allowed Ronnie to work his way back into much more than her heart. (I’m talking about her pants and her bed, people!) And, Maddie and their other friend, Helen (Heather Headley), were more than happy about this change in their relationship status by the end of Season 2.

Basically, even though Brandon Quinn’s time on Reba was short, it helped set the stage for him to reunite with JoAnna Garcia Swisher on Sweet Magnolias, and fans are all the better for it!

Even if you’ve only made your way through one season of the romantic Netflix hit, Sweet Magnolias, you’ll know that not all of Serenity, South Carolina’s residents get along like gangbusters. While Dana Sue, Helen, and Maddie are beloved by many of the townsfolk (complicated romances notwithstanding), their problems with the mayor's wife, Mary Vaughn (played by Allison Gabriel), only grew in Sweet Magnolias Season 2. And, Gabriel knows exactly why Mary Vaughn is so hated by viewers.

In the first season of Sweet Magnolias, Mary Vaughn mostly made a nuisance of herself when it came to wanting her son, Jackson, to be starting pitcher on his high school’s baseball team, as opposed to Ty, who is Maddie’s son. But, that tension spread in the most recent set of episodes, when the Magnolias worked to have Mary’s husband, Trent, recalled as mayor, leading to some big finale questions that will need answering if the show gets a third season. 

While speaking with TVLine, Allison Gabriel opened up about why fans hate Mary Vaughn so much, and said:

Gabriel went on to say that, like any good villain, Mary doesn’t at all see herself as the bad guy, but that is, indeed, what viewers see when watching the character scheme, lie, and manipulate her way around Serenity with a smile on her face. Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t finished the new season yet! Ready? Here we go…

Not only did the Magnolias realize in Season 2 that Mary and Trent were covertly squeezing small business owners around town (through some parking lot machinations) so that they could make extra money off of them (leading the ladies to get the signatures needed to recall Trent), but Mary took her dislike of Maddie to new heights.

Mary has always been annoyed that Ty seemed to be getting favoritism from the team’s coach, Cal, because of him dating Maddie. So, after the team lost at the state championship, she dug up dirt on Cal that revealed his problems with anger management and got him fired. This, in turn, led to Cal’s anger blowing up in the Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ending, and him attacking an unstable fan in public, probably leading to his arrest. End spoilers!

Gabriel believes that Mary has always had a problem with the Magnolias because she’s never gotten why everyone seems to adore them, with her thinking that “she sees the real them, and they have everybody else fooled,” and being jealous because they can sway town opinion even though they don’t have any real power. It seems clear that, should Sweet Magnolias get a third season, the problems with Mary Vaughn will continue (though a surprising new character will also cause some trouble), and Allison Gabriel has hopes that we’ll see her character’s “hard shell cracking open” if the series continues:

I don’t think there’s any doubt that Sweet Magnolias Season 2 really delivered exactly what a lot of fans have been dying for since the first season thrilled viewers back in 2020. We got to find out exactly who was in that infamous car accident with Kyle and saw that the impact of that night, overall, went way past those involved in the crash. And, as you probably expected, this means that a lot of personal relationships, including all of those complicated romances, changed a lot over the course of the season.

Seeing as how we went through the relationship statuses after the inaugural season, it only felt right to do the same as we bask in our post-Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ending glow, so be sure to read on!

Helen And Erik… And Ryan

I don’t think there was a single Sweet Magnolias fan who was hoping for anyone other than chef Erik to walk away with Helen’s heart. He was there to comfort her on prom night after she and Ryan broke up. He was there when Helen unexpectedly lost her baby and didn’t bat an eyelash at either her being pregnant or deciding to undergo IVF treatments. And, it didn’t take long for Helen to see just how special Erik was and tell him that she wanted more than friendship. YAY!

But then, Ryan returned for his aunt’s funeral, and decided to surprise the hell out of Helen by saying he was now (somehow… finally… after more than two decades) ready for kids, and then got down on one knee and proposed! Ryan left Helen with the definition of a shocked look on her face in the final seconds of the finale, so we have no idea whether she’ll choose Ryan or Erik. Egad!

Maddie And Cal

After a polarizing argument toward the end of Season 1, and Maddie’s dumb ex-husband, Bill, telling her he wanted her back, Maddie and Cal made up and got into getting it on a lot in Season 2. As their romance grew, Maddie was able to finally say she loved Cal, and his connection to her kids also got stronger. Cal began to open up about his past with a toxic woman named Victoria, but what he should have been telling Maddie about was his past with anger management problems.

We first get a real hint of this after Cal and his team lose the state championship, but when Mary Vaughn becomes determined to get back at him for not playing Jackson (and at Maddie for helping to get her mayor husband recalled), she digs up a troublesome incident from his pre-Serenity life and has Cal fired. This led to mounting anger on his part, and he ended up beating an out-of-control fan of his in Sullivan’s in front of nearly everyone, Maddie included. Will Maddie back out of the romance now that she’s seen Cal’s anger explode right in front of her? We shall see!

Dana Sue And Ronnie

These two have ruined my dreams of seeing Dana Sue and Jeremy ride off into the sunset together in a classic car, you guys. I’m just… not over it, yet, OK? I knew there was going to be trouble for Jeremy when Ronnie showed up at the end of Season 1, and I was correct. After a few episodes of holding off Ronnie’s attempts to reconcile, Dana Sue was read the riot act by Annie after she caught her mama making out with the hot farmer in Sullivan’s office. This led to Dana Sue finally cutting Jeremy loose, and he was really bummed about it.

Luckily, that disappointment wasn’t in vain, as she and Ronnie started counseling with Pastor June and managed to begin to work out their many issues. In the finale, Dana Sue let Ronnie move back in, so it would seem that they are 100% married yet again. You’d better not screw this up, Ronnie!

Ty And Annie

Surprisingly, this near romance was a complete non-starter in Season 2. Annie appeared to have fully gotten over her first season crush on Ty during the aftermath of the car crash, and started floating around Jackson. They began quietly hanging out, with him going so far as to eventually ask Dana Sue for permission to ask Annie on a real date, which she granted him. But, his mom’s desire to take down the Magnolias led to her telling him (and his sister) not to have anything to do with Ty, Kyle, or Annie. The finale saw Jackson make a clear decision to defy her wishes, and it seems like Annie is fully on board with that choice.

Meanwhile, things went in a very different direction for Ty. He continued to date CeCe, who was getting busier with her work for Helen and caring for her younger siblings, as Ty found himself a bit lost with a broken arm and no baseball to keep him busy. This led to him noticing just how much Annie was hanging out with his nemesis, Jackson, and showing Cece just how much he was into Annie. CeCe gave Ty the silent treatment for a while and then broke up with him, meaning that we could totally see Ty pining for Annie if Sweet Magnolias returns for Season 3.

Kyle And Nellie

Mary Vaughn’s edict against the Magnolias also affected her daughter, Nellie, who was crushing so hard on Kyle in Season 1 that she jumped into that car with him and got really banged up in the crash. But, she didn’t blame him one bit, and continued to have feelings for him. As Kyle dealt with the guilt of that night, he forgot about his own crush (These kids, right?) on Annie, and realized that Nellie is a doll. Unfortunately, once he got up the nerve to ask her out, it didn’t take long for her mom to shut their plans down, and Nellie had to rescind her acceptance, though she did do it with a sweet kiss by the town’s “kissing tree.” Awww!

Trotter And Ashley

While Trotter was around quite a lot in Season 1 (as Cal’s best buddy), we were only briefly introduced to his husband, Ashley. But, this season we got a lot more with Doctor Ashley, as he both began therapy sessions with Kyle to help him deal with his part in the car accident, and saw him interact with Trotter on a regular basis. Luckily, the couple’s doing well, deciding they were ready to begin the process of adopting a child. And, when Trotter told Ashley that he wanted to adopt an older kid, as opposed to a baby, his sweet hubby didn’t think twice about making the change. Say it again… Awwwww!

Noreen… And Isaac?

You guys, is this actually going to be a thing if we get Season 3? When Noreen returned to support Kyle after the accident, who could have imagined that such a fast and true friendship would develop between her and Isaac? Could there be real romance coming? Whether there is or not, Isaac will (at some point) have to tell Noreen that he’s Bill’s son and a half-brother to her new daughter, and that will be an intriguing conversation if nothing else!

Honorable Mention:Can We Please Find Someone For Farmer Jeremy?!?!

Like I mentioned earlier, I am not over the appalling lack of farmer Jeremy in Season 2, alright?! I get that Dana Sue was supposed to take Ronnie back (this happens in the books… fine, whatever), but did that have to mean that Chase Anderson’s Jeremy was suddenly persona non grata in every corner of Serenity? All I want is for that sweet, flirty man to find someone after being heartbroken by Dana Sue. May I suggest either Pastor June or Peggy fulfill this position in the Sweet Magnolias cast? I’m sure either (Or both!) of those ladies would love to trade suggestive comments about nectarines and tomatoes with him!

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 gave fans lots of exciting developments, from new relationships, to big reveals, to reunions, and so much more. Sweet Magnolias Season 2 did not disappoint. It answered all of our questions from the first season and added a ton of additional ones. After the second season, life in Serenity has permanently changed.  

Sweet Magnolias has not officially been renewed or cancelled by Netflix, and we really hope it doesn’t become one of the latest Netflix cancellations, but I believe that its popularity makes a third season very likely. If we get Sweet Magnolias Season 3, we need so many questions answered from this season and the Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ending. 

Will Helen Say Yes To Ryan’s Proposal?

Let’s start off with, “How dare he!” How dare Ryan (Michael Shenefelt) come back into Helen's (Heather Headley) life after she’s moved on and starting the much-anticipated romance with Erik (Dion Johnstone). We thought Ryan telling Helen that he wanted children was bad enough, but to actually propose marriage! The nerve! It’s obvious that Ryan and Helen still have feelings for each other because of their long history. 

However, I believe, and hope, that Helen tells him no and that it’s too late. If there is a tiered-level of men in Serenity, Erik is at the very top. He’s been so kind, selfless, and loving towards Helen. He’s the obvious right choice. However, I do think Helen will consider her past feelings for Ryan before a flat-out no, but I think in the end, she’ll pick Erik. I believe that we may see a lot more of Ryan in a potential Sweet Magnolias Season 3, and that the writers may have even given a glimpse of a potential future romance between Ryan and Peggy (Brittany L. Smith).

What’s Next For Cal Now That His Life Has Been Dismantled?

Poor Cal (Justin Bruening). He had one of the toughest stories in Sweet Magnolias Season 2. First, Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) refused to listen to his suggestions for Sullivan’s, which I think weren’t bad at all, then he got fired from his job, his past mistakes got revealed in a major way, and finally he became violent to protect Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher). Maddie and Cal are definitely going to have a rough Season 3. 

I hate to say it, but I think Maddie and Cal are breaking up if Sweet Magnolias Season 3 happens. Maddie kept warning Cal to not show her an angry side and to not keep secrets, and he did both in the Season 2 finale. Maddie also had to deal with a major bombshell from Bill (Chris Klein), so I think she will be taking time as a single lady next season. I definitely think the pair will reunite; hopefully by the time that potential season ends. 

Who Is The Woman Who Hates Dana Sue?

If Mary Vaughn (Allison Gabriel) wasn’t causing enough problems for the Magnolias, this new lady will definitely increase their troubles. Sweet Magnolias’ viewers only got to see her in two scenes. The first was insulting Annie (Anneliese Judge) and Dana Sue simultaneously, and the second was taking a shot at Dana Sue’s delivery vehicle.

Entertainment Weekly spoke to Sweet Magnolias’ showrunner, Sheryl J. Anderson, about some of the major cliffhangers from the Season 2 finale. One thing she revealed is that this mystery woman is named Kathy (Wynn Everett) and that Dana Sue isn’t the only person she has a problem with in Serenity.

Anderson also added about Kathy that “we wanted to indicate that if we come back, not everything is under control.” I am looking forward to seeing Kathy disrupt some lives and make relationships even more complicated. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kathy is revealed to be the one who Ronnie (Brandon Quinn) cheated on Dana Sue with, and if that’s true, their happy reunion is about to face a huge obstacle. 

What Happens Next For The Lewis Children And Their Romances?

Who would have guessed that Mary Vaughn and Mayor Trent Lewis (Paul Rolfes) would have offspring who added the most teen romance excitement in Sweet Magnolias Season? Jackson (Sam Ashby) didn’t just charm Annie, but he charmed the viewers into rooting for him. He had the biggest redemption arc of the season. Now that Mary Vaughn forbade him from dating Annie, he’s clearly going to use some of his mischievous ways to continue the cutest romance of Sweet Magnolias Season 2. I think Annie and Ty's (Carson Rowland) feelings for each other will eventually cause some drama between Jackson and Annie, especially with Ty now single.

However, I think much of Ty’s potential Sweet Magnolias Season 3 storyline will explore what life looks like for him without baseball. Also, Lily (Artemis) boldly flirting with him makes me think that they may become a romance next season.

Kyle (Logan Allen) finds himself in yet another Serenity love triangle. Kyle and Nellie (Simone Lockhart) confessed their feelings for each other and even kissed, but Mary Vaughn also forbade Nellie and Kyle from exploring a romance. Unlike her brother, Nellie seems like she’s going to listen to her parents. This could cost her, because I believe Sophie (Gabriella Garcia) is also crushing on Kyle. We could see him forget all about Nellie while spending so much time with Sophie.

Will Bill Ever Get A Redemption Arc On Sweet Magnolias?

I don’t think I’ve ever wondered if the writers hate a character as much as I do with Bill Townsend. Honestly, I can’t blame them. This Sweet Magnolias season, Bill just proved he was the worst time and time again. Even Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears) got a redemption arc, but Bill basically got told off all season by multiple characters, only for it to be revealed that he always had questionable morals.

When Sweet Magnolias Season 1 ended, I suspected that Ryan and Peggy were Isaac's  (Chris Medlin) parents. So I was completely shocked when Bill was the dad, but I also felt like “yeah that makes sense.” Isaac's search for his birth parents was a small story last season, but got expanded into one of the biggest plot points of Sweet Magnolias Season 2. Bill barely appeared in the second season, but I hope that he’s more of a major character next time. I would like to see how Bill and Isaac interact now that they know they're birth father and son. Sheryl J. Anderson also mentioned in her Entertainment Weekly interview that a possible Sweet Magnolias Season 3 would explore how the Townsend children react to knowing that their father has yet another child.

I would also like to see Isaac interact with his brothers and sisters more.

Who Will Become The New Mayor Of Serenity?

The Magnolias instigated a recall election, and Trent may finally leave office. When Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ended, the town hadn’t decided on a candidate to go against him. There was a mention of the potential mayor needing to have a law degree. To me, this sounds like Helen may enter the mayoral election.

I also think that there is a possibility we’ll meet a new character who will become the new mayor. 

Is There A Romance Brewing Between Noreen And Isaac?

When Noreen and Isaac decided to live together, I was like, "okay, they’re definitely going to fall in love." Then we got the twist about Bill being his father and that made a possible romance between them a little weird.

Before the reveal about his parents, I saw major romantic potential between Isaac and Noreen, but now that Bill is his dad, I think they’ll just be really good friends. But hey, you never know, the writers may go down the soap opera route of relationships and family ties being even more complicated.

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 was one of the most anticipated winter 2022 TV premieres, and now we have to wait at least a year for another season, if Netflix renews it, of course. Sweet Magnolias is one of the best Netflix shows to watch if you want a little Southern comfort and a whole lot of drama. 

Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Sweet Magnolias Season 2 finale! Bless your heart for trying to read this now, but we’ll take no offense if you step away until you’ve finished the entire season!

After almost two full years, fans were finally treated to the second season of Sweet Magnolias a few days ago. While the entire season held a lot of surprises, the Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ending did a very good job of taking Helen, Dana Sue, Maddie, and many of the other characters to places we didn’t expect, including complicating the romances even further. One big question, though, definitely involves a brand new character who absolutely has a big grudge against Dana Sue, and now we know why the show introduced her, and what she could mean for a potential Season 3.

Why Did Sweet Magnolias Introduce That New Character In The Season 2 Finale?

Sweet Magnolias did a very good job of both bringing in some new Serenity citizens in Season 2, and giving some old favorites more to do. I doubt that any viewers knew that the shock of a blonde woman we hadn’t seen before talking trash to Annie about her mom, Dana Sue, would come about in the finale. Or, for that matter, that the same woman would later be shown stabbing the tires of a Sullivan’s delivery vehicle. 

It’s clear that this mysterious lady has a major bone to pick with our beloved chef, but why did the show bring her in so late in the game? In a chat with Entertainment Weekly about the finale and what might come in Sweet Magnolias Season 3, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson said:

Well, good job on that end, I’d say! Not only was it a shock to be introduced to this potentially dangerous and clearly angry character in the last episode of Season 2, but it was also very shocking to see that all three of the Magnolias knew exactly who she was. 

Her introduction came with a bang, too. First, the woman stops Annie on a walk and tells the teen, “Yeah, you look like something she’d spit out. She still busy wrecking people’s lives?” Then we see Ty show Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue a video of the same woman vandalizing that truck. And, while they are surprised, it’s only because they’re seeing her again, meaning that she was one of Serenity’s denizens way back when.

What Will The New Character Mean For Sweet Magnolias Season 3?

As you might imagine, those behind the show have some big plans for this new addition to the Sweet Magnolias cast. Luckily, Anderson was able to share this not-so-much-a-stranger’s name, and tell us a bit about what she’ll bring if Sweet Magnolias gets a third season:

I’m sorry, “an agenda for the present”? And, it’s one “that will impact everybody’s future”? OK, Netflix, the ball is firmly in your court, because we all NEED Sweet Magnolias Season 3, and within a year from now if at all possible!

Well, lord a’mighty. I don’t know if any of us has ever seen as much drama as what we got in the Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ending before, but I can bet you loved it just as much as I did! The Netflix hit came in with a bang and kept delivering all of the shocking twists, heartfelt emotions, and complicated romance that fans have been craving since the first season, and still managed to up the stakes in a major way should it be granted Season 3 (And it better!)

As promised, we finally found out that it was sweet Nellie Lewis who jumped into the car with Kyle on prom night. They were both hurt in the accident, but while the kids, thankfully, recovered, the events of prom night and the aftermath of that car crash ended up doing a number on Helen, Dana Sue, Maddie, and many of the town’s other inhabitants, which set off a chain of events that brought us to that surprising finale. So, let’s get into the details about the Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ending!

Maddie, Helen, And Dana Sue’s Lives Are Still Quite Messy At The End Of Sweet Magnolias Season 2!

Considering what our favorite trio went through in Season 1, we knew there'd be lots of ups and downs for Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue in the second season of Sweet Magnolias, and everything ended on very surprising notes. 

Maddie spent the bulk of the episodes trying to help Kyle recover from the accident, and get through to him about what led to him jumping behind the wheel of Ty’s car. They did finally have a breakthrough, but Maddie’s relationship status with still new-ish beau, Cal, took several turns. Maddie finally admitted she loves Cal, but was then faced with new reveals about his anger management problem.

Dana Sue, meanwhile, managed to do a lot of work with Ronnie so that they could reunite (I already miss adorable farmer Jeremy!), and she saw her money troubles at Sullivan’s relieved. First by Cal when he bought Micah out as her silent partner, and then when Miss Frances left her a buttload of cash in her will. But! Now someone who’s very mad at Dana Sue has returned to give her hell!

Helen… Lordy, lord! Poor Helen went through a lot in Season 2. Not only did she lose her (and Ryan’s) baby shortly after prom night, but she decided to undergo IVF treatments just as she and chef Erik were getting closer. Like, smoochably closer. To top it all off, that damn Ryan showed back up! Speaking of…

Ryan Proposed To Helen!

A lot of Sweet Magnolias fans probably had nothing but pure hate for Ryan after he got back with Helen in Season 1, only to reveal he still didn’t want kids right when she was (once again) looking forward to a future with him. I, however, tried to see how both of them were foolish in attempting to date after roughly two decades of an on / off romance, and was just glad Helen finally set her tender heart on the town’s most suitable love interest, Erik, after her prom night heartbreak. But then Ryan’s aunt, Miss Frances, died, and he returned to Serenity and had the absolute gall and gumption to tell Helen that he now wants kids. Then, that ass dared to propose to her, leaving Helen shocked to her very core in the final seconds of the Season 2 ending.

Cal Got Fired! And He Might Have Been Arrested!

Mary Vaughn is nothing if not vengeful and totally honest about it. She’s been pissed with Cal since Season 1, for not playing her son, Jackson, more in their baseball games and favoring Maddie’s son, Ty. But, after the team loses at the state championship (and Maddie, Helen, and Dana Sue start a campaign to have her husband, the mayor, recalled) Mary digs up dirt on Cal and his past with serious anger management issues. 

That got Cal fired from the high school, which led to his simmering anger being triggered big time, and he physically attacked a (obviously disturbed) fan of his in Sullivan’s, which may have gotten him arrested!

Maddie Knows Bill Fathered Isaac!

Everyone who figured that town hotshot reporter Peggy was Isaac’s birth mother was correct when seeing this story become a full-blown plot, but instead of Ryan being the father, that title went to the gold medalist of the Serenity Screw Up Olympics: Bill. Once Peggy told him and introduced him to Isaac, Bill felt the need to tell Maddie, and she (rightfully) read him the riot act for how he’s selfishly treated so many of the people in his life.

Dana Sue And Ronnie Are Fully Back Together!

Dana Sue spent the first few episodes going back and forth between Ronnie and Jeremy, not knowing whether or not to give her cheating husband another shot, or throw her full love lot in with the charming farmer. Unfortunately for Jeremy, she decided to give it a go with Ronnie again, and after a lot of hard therapy, they were fully back together by the end of Season 2. 

Kyle And Nellie Can’t Date!

You remember how Mary is pissed at the Sweet Magnolias and super into revenge, right? Well, without knowing that her kids had been courting two Magnolia offspring, she forbade Jackson and Nellie from having anything to do with either Annie, Kyle, or Ty. Kyle had just figured out how much he liked Nellie and asked her on a date when this happened, so Nellie accepted his date offer… only to be forced to turn it down upon her mom’s order. But, she did plant a kiss on Kyle when she told him what Mary said, so I have hope they’ll work something out eventually.

Annie And Jackson Are 100% Dating!

Nellie’s brother, Jackson, was not so easily cowed by Mary’s words, though. Not only did he directly tell her he wouldn’t stop dealing with Annie, Kyle, and Ty (which Mary figured was a disrespectful joke and gave him a stern lecture over), but he later promised Annie that he wouldn’t let their parents keep them apart (goodbye Annie and Ty…for now). Annie thought his declaration was “pretty hot,” but I got some hints of possibly dangerous parental defiance in his words, so if we see Season 3, it’s going to be a roller coaster with these two!

Ty Quit Baseball!

Ty had a lot of free time in Season 2, seeing as how his post-car accident fight with Jackson led to a broken arm and zero baseball for him. In the finale, he told Bill that he didn’t think the sport he’d spent his whole life trying to perfect was right for him anymore, and noted that he mostly took to it because it came easy to him, and Bill liked that he played. What this will mean for Ty in the future, we’ll have to wait and see! 

Dana Sue Has Someone From Her Past After Her!

This was probably the most unexpected factor of the finale. Toward the end, a mysterious blonde stopped Annie, asked if she was Dana Sue’s daughter, and then inquired if the older Sullivan was “still busy wrecking people’s lives.” Later, Ty showed the Magnolias a post on the Serenity gossip Instagram, which was a video of the same woman stabbing the tires of a Sullivan’s delivery truck. It was clear that Dana Sue, Maddie, and Helen all knew who the woman was, but we have no clue what her connection is to our beloved chef or when things went down with her and Dana Sue!

I don’t know about you, but I am now way more eager to see Sweet Magnolias get Season 3 on Netflix! I know it’s been nearly two full years since we last saw our favorite Sweet Magnolias and their long list of (potentially unsuitable) love interests, but if you enjoyed the small town drama as much as I did, you will probably remember that Helen, Dana Sue, and Maddie had some complex love lives by the end of Sweet Magnolias Season 1. With the new season of the Netflix hit now here, we know how the series has kept the complicated romance train rolling along for Season 2.

How Will Sweet Magnolias Season 2 Use All Of Those Complicated Romances?

Well, I do declare! Viewers certainly got to watch all of the Sweet Magnolias deal with some heartbreak and potential new forever love by the time the series wrapped Season 1 with a very dramatic, cliffhanger-inducing car crash. Basically, each of our three ladies is either having to choose between an old love and an enticing new one, or trying to see if they can bounce back from hurt quickly enough to take full advantage of whatever sparks are flying with a different gentleman caller.

In speaking with Entertainment Weekly about Sweet Magnolias Season 2, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson revealed that everyone will still have their bags packed and be riding in the complicated romance caboose (along with wading through other, now major, plots) and said:

For a refresher on everyone’s relationship status, Helen and Ryan had broken up again, after realizing they still didn’t want the same thing when it came to having kids (he was a firm “no,” while she was a yearning “yes”), but she finally noticed that sous chef Erik had taken a liking to her…which she definitely began to reciprocate. Maddie was divorced from cheating husband Bill and had been trying to make things work with her son’s baseball coach, Cal, but Bill asked for another shot after Maddie and Cal hit the skids. Meanwhile, workaholic Dana Sue finally (FINALLY) got some lovin’ from sweet farmer Jeremy, only to be enticed by her own cheating, estranged husband, Ronnie, toward season’s end.

Whew! These ladies will have a lot of decisions to make and pieces to pick up or fully discard in Season 2, right? As Anderson noted, these kinds of difficulties do tend to impact people’s romantic relationships going forward, so even if we eventually see the trio make way for their new loves, that doesn’t mean that it will totally be smooth sailing on the…uh, romance train (with the same seeming to be true for potential teen couple Ty and Annie). 

It can be very hard to get over being cheated on so that you can trust anyone, especially with the fact that Maddie felt like Cal overstepped his bounds with her son, so she and Dana Sue will still likely be dealing with some strong feelings about their old loves. And, with how much Helen and Ryan went back and forth over their many lifestyle differences, it might be a real challenge to trust that even someone as nice and seemingly ready for family duties as Erik is the right choice. Plus, he has his own complicated past to deal with and talk to Helen about so they can start out the right way.

Basically, there’s going to be a lot more drama, romance, and a lot more surprises coming our way in Sweet Magnolias Season 2, and fans wouldn’t have it any other way! The first season left us with a lot of questions, and the Season 1 ending did a great job of giving fans a lot to ponder over this extended break, from character relationship statuses to who Kyle’s passenger was in the car accident. But, there's another storyline that's going to expand into a full-blown plot in Season 2: Isaac’s search for his birth parents.

What’s Been Said About The Search For Isaac’s Parents In Sweet Magnolias Season 2?

For several episodes of Sweet Magnolias’ first season, Isaac (Chris Medlin) was just a nice, sorta mysterious young man who works in the kitchen staff at Dana Sue’s restaurant. But, in Episode 6, we get a better idea of who he is, when he tells their sous chef, Erik (Dion Johnstone), that he came to Serenity to look for his birth parents. Isaac then surprised Dana Sue toward the end of the finale by asking if she was his biological mother. According to TV Line, this minor plot will now become a very big one, as Sweet Magnolias Season 2 is said to have a “major” focus on Isaac looking for his parents.

This actually makes tons of sense, because while there was little known about Isaac in the first season, and he doesn’t play a big role in the main action of the series, you might recall that Dana Sue was unable to answer his question. They were having a tear-filled conversation in Sullivan’s kitchen alone, when she was alerted to the fact that there’d been a car accident involving Maddie’s son, and Dana Sue had to leave. So, Isaac’s parentage was actually another big, shocking cliffhanger for Season 1.

And, it’s not a huge stretch that the young man has made in thinking that Dana Sue might be his mother. We get hints through that first set of episodes that our now very work-focused Dana Sue was kinda wild in her younger days, and are also told that she spent some time away from Serenity, and that time is still a mystery to the audience. But, are there other options for who Isaac's mom could be? You bet there are!

Who Could Be Revealed As Isaac’s Parents In Sweet Magnolias Season 2?

Obviously, at this point, it truly could be pretty much anyone (particularly with new characters coming in). All Isaac knows is that he’s biracial and his parents are both from Serenity. There’s a possibility that Dana Sue is his mom, but my bet (and the bets of many other fans) is on another very low-key character and someone we know a bit better for being his mother and father: town reporter Peggy (Brittany L. Smith) and Helen’s currently off-again ex-boyfriend, Ryan (Michael Shenefelt).

Peggy also spent time away from Serenity, with her family moving away for her senior year of high school. Sounds like a good time for her to have had a secret baby that no one in town would know about, right? Also, Peggy is the one who alerted Ryan to the fact that Helen and her friends were renovating his family home, bringing him back to town, so we have a slight connection there. And, not only have Peggy and Helen had beef with each other since high school, but Peggy also got real mysterious when talking to Helen about Ryan in the finale, after they’d broken up again.

It could be that some of their rivalry stemmed from the fact that Peggy liked Ryan way back when, or that during one of his off-again periods from Helen, he and Peggy had a brief fling, which resulted in Isaac.

What Does Sweet Magnolias' Showrunner Say About Isaac’s Parents?

As you might imagine, this is the kind of cliffhanger mystery that Sweet Magnolias showrunner, Sheryl J. Anderson, is not going to give answers or clues to, especially with the synopsis for the new season sneakily not mentioning the plot at all. When asked about Isaac’s biological folks, Anderson said:

Well, at least Anderson and her team know exactly where they’re going with the story of Isaac and his birth parents, and will be making this surprising plot a main focus of the new season. Hopefully, this means that we’ll get some answers by the end of Sweet Magnolias Season 2, which will likely have its own shocks in store for us!

Obviously, there are some major questions we still have about that wild Season 1 finale, but there’s some new information about teen residents Ty and Annie that now has me worried.

What’s Going On With Annie And Ty In Sweet Magnolias Season 2?

In case you don’t quite remember, Ty Townsend and Annie Sullivan are son and daughter to best Sweet Magnolia buddies Maddie and Dana Sue, respectively. Ty and Annie spent a lot of time in Season 1 giving each other longing looks and even kissed briefly, but a new report from TV Line suggests that they still might not be ready for a full romance in Season 2. Apparently, their budding relationship will be “complicated” in the upcoming episodes, with them each having “exciting journeys ahead of them” that might not be what viewers were expecting to see.

The report also notes that some of this will be because of the surprising fallout from that damn anxiety-inducing, cliffhanger-producing post-prom car accident that ended Season 1, as that is said to impact the entire town (which was noted when the Season 2 premiere date and synopsis were revealed) and not leave any type of relationship the same as it was beforehand. But, what exactly could this mean for Annie and Ty? Might they not actually become a couple in Season 2?

What Could Stop Annie And Ty From Getting Romantic In Sweet Magnolias Season 2?

As you will probably recall now (seeing as how your memory has been refreshed), those two crazy teenagers have grown up together and been friends their whole lives. But, Annie now has a fierce crush on Ty, who does like her…but also has feelings for another girl (hello, Cece), and (on top of that) doesn’t want to potentially ruin his friendship with Annie. Of course, Annie planted that smooch on Ty after she got drunk at a party halfway through the season, and he helped her get home, but it sounds like the results of the accident will put another big barrier between them.

We know that Ty’s little brother Kyle was driving the car and did, indeed, get hurt, but we don’t know who his passenger was. The current possibilities are Ty, Annie, or Kyle's friend Nellie (who all ran after him when he headed for the car), and if Kyle’s fit of anger that led to him driving off got Annie hurt then that could surely put a dent in the friendship of Dana Sue and Maddie, which might in turn lead the teens to stay away from each other.

And, let’s not forget that in addition to the fact that Ty went to prom with Cece (knowing that Annie had pants-feelings for him), young Kyle has his own serious crush on Annie, which Ty knows nothing about yet. If the accident leads to that being revealed, the older brother might just fully back off so as to not hurt his already dismissed-feeling younger brother.

Basically, Annie and Ty have gotten a good head start on all the romantic drama that their parents have been getting into with a number of suitable and unsuitable love interests. This means that the duo officially dating by the end of Sweet Magnolias Season 2  just might not be in the cards. Again...Dangit!

Netflix is never one to disappoint with originals, and this February is an exceptionally strong month for the streaming service. Sure, another month passed with no Stranger Things, but on the plus side, there’s a ton of shows coming this month that could absolutely take its place in pop culture someday. 

In addition to some new shows, there’s also the return of some beloved favorites. We also have the arrival of what I think could be the documentary of the year, but we’ll get more into that below. Let’s dive in and see what spectacular shows are headed to Netflix in February 2022.

Murderville - February 3

Will Arnett stars as Senior Detective Terry Seattle in a mystery-comedy that’s unlike anything currently on television in the United States. Terry Seattle is on the case to solve a murder with his celebrity guest sidekick, but the catch is that the celebrity guest has absolutely no idea what’s in the script. Therefore, it’s on the celebrity guest not only to improv their way through the episode but also pinpoint who the killer by the end of it. Guest stars include Annie Murphy, Conan O’Brien, Ken Jeong,  Kumail Nanjiani, Marshawn Lynch, Sharon Stone. I can’t wait to binge this entire series. 

Sweet Magnolias (Season 2) - February 4

Sweet Magnolias is back for another season of adventures, and there’s a lot to talk about. The Magnolias navigate new relationships, the past, and town politics. There’s a tease that the sweet will mix with the sour, which can occasionally make great things like Sour Patch Kids. In most other cases, though, it can create bad situations, so I think Netflix fans can expect more of that this coming season. 

Catching Killers (Season 2) - February 9

True Crime mystery documentaries are fun and all, but sometimes they only end in mystery and open-ended questions. Catching Killers Season 1 detailed the cases and captures of some of the worst known murderers and just about every detail one can get from a closed case. You’re going to get answers in this series, and perhaps more than what you bargained for. 

Disenchantment (Part 4) - February 9

It’s been a little over a year since the last batch of Disenchantment episodes, so fans can be pretty excited to jump back into Matt Groening’s series. The next episodes will find Bean, Elfo, and Luci separated once again but hoping to find each other for the sake of the kingdom. The stakes are pretty high here, and I’m not so sure Bean can escape her evil mother’s grasp any more than Luci will escape Heaven. Elfo, I believe, will figure some things out about his past with the Ogres, but we won’t know for sure until these next episodes arrive.

Inventing Anna - February 11

Ever got the idea to pretend you’re the heiress of a foreign country and defraud the wealthy? I might suggest watching this series first, in which Anna Chlumsky and Julia Garner help tell the true story of  Anna Sorokin and how she did just that. I love Garner in Ozark, and I’ve been a fan of Chlumsky’s as far back as her days in My Girl. I’m also a big fan of unbelievable but true stories, so I have a feeling this is going to be a big hit for me when it releases. 

Love Is Blind (Season 2) - February 11

Love Is Blind captivated audiences in Season 1, and it’s back to link up couples and make meaningful matches with people who never saw each other face to face. Episodes will air weekly so viewers will be able to discuss the drama with other fans, which is always something I appreciate with The Circle. Season 2 looks like it’ll be full of fun, and there’s even a televised wedding in the works. Be sure to catch one of streaming’s wildest reality shows with some massive stakes.

Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy - February 16

Kanye West is one of the most prolific stars in hip-hop, and he’s achieved that through many radically different phases in his life. The Kanye of the past is not the Kanye of now, and perhaps Netflix fans will see that in this three-part documentary that chronicles the past twenty years of his life. That’s right, we’re talking his humble producer beginnings, to a rise to superstardom, a beef with Taylor Swift, and just so much more along the way. I’m very excited to see this documentary and wonder what exactly we’ll learn about where Kanye is now with his life. 

The Cuphead Show! - February 18

The Cuphead franchise started as a video game with an aesthetic inspired by the old-school Fleischer Studios cartoons, and now it’s gone full circle into its own cartoon series. I’m not complaining in the slightest, and I’m excited to see this art style revived in a modern era. I’m also wondering if the show may stir up a bit of controversy given its inviting art style for children but the inclusion of characters like the Devil. I guess we’ll find out!

Space Force (Season 2) - February 18

Space Force is back for another season, and ironically, trying to justify its existence. General Naird and the crew have four months to justify their existence as an administration. That’s about as great a premise as any, especially as we watch the actual Space Force navigate its way in the military community and establish itself. I love Steve Carell, so I’ll be watching!

Cat Burglar - February 22

The Black Mirror team captivated Netflix subscribers in 2018 with Bandersnatch, and now the creative team is back with Cat Burglar. This series is one-part “classic cartoon craziness” and the other part is an interactive quiz. That’s literally all the information listed about the series, which makes me all the more curious as to what this could be. I’m excited about it in any case, just because I know what wild premises the Black Mirror team comes up with. 

Vikings: Valhalla - February 25

The long-awaited sequel to History's Vikings is here, only this time it’s on Netflix. Vikings: Valhalla takes place a century after the original series and gives an opportunity for new heroes to rise. It also may give those unfamiliar with the original series a chance to dive in and get in on the fun with all the existing Vikings fans waiting for this show. 

The only way one can watch these upcoming shows is with a Netflix subscription, so make sure to get one before seeking them out. February is a particularly good month to start binging, especially for those in parts of the world that have colder climates during this time of the year. 

When it premiered in 2020, Sweet Magnolias became an instant hit for Netflix. It gave drama, romance, and margarita fans a reason to unite and enjoy some heartfelt storytelling with plenty of shocking moments. It’s been a while since we last visited Serenity, but in 2022, Sweet Magnolias makes its big return, and fans can rejoice because it will stream on Netflix very soon.

The Sweet Magnolias Season 2 crew had some time to plan and plot out the new episodes, so we know a few important things about the upcoming season. Let’s explore what Sweet Magnolias fans can expect to see in season 2. 

Sweet Magnolias Premieres On February 4, 2022

Mark off February 4, 2022 on your Netflix TV premiere schedule, because that’s when Sweet Magnolias Season 2 premieres. Sweet Magnolias Season 1 began streaming in May 2020. This means that the second season premieres a few months short of when it originally debuted, nearly two years ago.  Like many shows, the global pandemic delayed production on Sweet Magnolias Season 2 until April 2021, and filming wrapped in July 2021.

Netflix’s plan to release the series in February 2022 seems like a smart decision. Sweet Magnolias performed very well for the streaming service during its initial season, and fans have been anxious to see what happens next, so having it available to stream earlier rather than later in the year should maintain the show’s momentum. Additionally, releasing Sweet Magnolias Season 2 a few days before Valentine’s Day, should tap into the romance-loving TV demographic.  

There Are 10 Episodes Of Sweet Magnolias Season 2

In an interview with Parade, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who plays Maddie, revealed that the second season contains 10 episodes. This shouldn’t be a surprising reveal, because the first season also had 10 episodes that were about an hour each. Swisher also teased that the episodes “are gonna be a wild ride.”

We’ll have to wait until Sweet Magnolias Season 2 premieres on Netflix to see the levels of wildness these episodes reach.

Jamie Lynn Spears Is A Series Regular On Sweet Magnolias Season 2

Jamie Lynn Spears plays Noreen Fitzgibbons on Sweet Magnolias. The series introduced her in Season 1 as the mistress of Maddie’s ex-husband, Bill (Chris Klein), who was pregnant with his child. She only appeared in a few episodes in a recurring role. Bill and Noreen didn’t end the season on the best of terms but it appears that we’ll see a lot more of Noreen in the upcoming season. 

JoAnna Garcia Swisher spoke to Good Housekeeping in June 2020 about hoping that Sweet Magnolias Season 2 would explore more of Noreen and Maddie’s relationship, especially in how it relates to Maddie’s son, Kyle (Logan Allen). Hopefully, Swisher’s wish is granted, because I think the evolution of Noreen and Maddie’s relationship could be an interesting topic to explore.

In May 2021, Deadline reported that Spears would become a series regular, and two other characters would as well. Dion Johnstone and Brandon Quinn were also bumped up to series regulars. Johnstone plays Erik Whitley, the sous chef at Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott)’s restaurant, and Helen (Heather Headley)’s potential love interest. Quinn plays Ronnie Sullivan, Dana Sue’s estranged husband who was missing for most of Sweet Magnolias Season 1, because he was separated from his wife due to his infidelity, but he made a return towards the end of the season. 

Along with the leads, Chris Klein, Justin Bruening, Carson Rowland, Anneliese Judge, and Logan Allen all make appearances in Sweet Magnolias Season 2. 

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 Answers Major Questions From Season 1

Sweet Magnolias Season 1 ended with many questions. Of course, the biggest question was about the passenger in the car accident. The good news is that Sweet Magnolias Season 2 answers that question and more, but the bad news is that the season plans to add a ton of additional questions. In the previously mentioned Parade interview, Garcia Swisher disclosed that the season begins right where Season 1 left off.

Sweet Magnolias’ showrunner, Sheryl Anderson, revealed in another interview that the car accident is just one of many surprises to happen on prom night. She had this to say about what viewers can expect to see as the prom night drama unfolds:

We’re afraid and ecstatic to see what other surprises prom night has in store for the Serenity residents. 

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 Diverges From The Book Series

This small town drama is based on Sherryl Woods' 11 books series. Like the previous season, Sweet Magnolias Season 2 won’t completely mimic what happens in the books. In an interview with Southern Living, author and Sweet Magnolias producer Woods confirmed that the show continues its departure from the book series.

She even said that the TV show took “twists and turns” that surprised her. Woods also revealed that there would be a plotline involving Dana Sue that allowed Brooke Elliott to have some very “emotional scenes.” Dana Sue and Ronnie were the main focus of the second book, A Slice of Heaven, in the book series. It’ll be interesting to see if anything from that book makes it into Sweet Magnolias Season 2. 

In her Parade interview, Garcia Swisher also noted that the TV series is inspired by the books “but takes its own leaps.” 

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 Ends On More Cliffhangers

In her Parade interview, Garcia Swisher teased a potential Sweet Magnolias Season 3. She spoke about new drama unfolding throughout the upcoming season, and ending on cliffhangers to set up the direction for yet another set of new episodes. Garcia Swisher had this to say about how everything concludes in Sweet Magnolias Season 2:

She also told PureWow that Sweet Magnolias Season 2 ends “with a lot of drama." 

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 Introduces New Serenity Residents

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 has plenty to deal with with the current Serenity leads, but apparently, there will be new residents coming out of hiding when the new season begins. Sheryl Anderson shared that she was planning to add new citizens to Serenity. 

We’ll have to wait until Sweet Magnolias Season 2 premieres to see if these citizens will become friends or foes to Helen, Maddie, and Dana Sue. 

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 is just one of the many exciting TV shows coming to the winter 2022 TV schedule. Wow, it’s been quite a while since we’ve been able to follow along with the romances, family drama, and professional crises of Dana Sue, Helen, and Maddie on the Netflix hit Sweet Magnolias. While the second season was delayed for obvious reasons, that doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been difficult for fans to wait until we could have our questions from the cliffhanger-heavy first season answered. Now, though, Sweet Magnolias has finally revealed its Season 2 premiere date, and a lot more, so you can start to get those margaritas ready for showtime!

Luckily, we no longer have months and months to wait for more Sweet Magnolias, as TVLine reports that the new episodes will hit Netflix on February 4, 2022! This means that the romantic, small town drama will actually manage to return to us slightly less than two years after it first debuted, which was in mid-May of 2020. And! We also now have an official synopsis for Sweet Magnolias Season 2, and, as we were both hoping and expecting, it sounds like it’s going to be a doozy:

Oooooooohhhh weeeeeeee! As previously promised by showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson, Sweet Magnolias will, indeed, wrap up the major cliffhanger from the Season 1 ending, and we’ll find out who else was in that prom night car accident with Kyle. It’s also already been said that the new season will pick up just minutes after that shocking finale, so viewers will be treated to a lot of drama on that front when the next season comes around.

Apparently, though, the outcome of the accident itself will not be the only surprise when Season 2 opens, and at least some of those other reveals will come directly from who else was in the crash. With the synopsis noting that audiences are going to see “friendships flounder,” my guess is that we could find out that the daughter of a certain chef / restaurant owner was also in that vehicle, and that it will lead to a lot of problems for our main trio.

Hopefully, those “new loves” that begin will lead to a lot of great romantic moments for Helen, Dana Sue, and Maddie with their many potential love interests, to help soften the blow of all this small town drama, right? Unless you've been hiding in a very secure cave for the past several months, you will probably know that TV dramas with a main focus on romance are becoming more and more popular. While anyone who's ever enjoyed soap operas, shows such as Grey's Anatomy and The Good Doctor, or even procedurals like Law & Order: SVU and NCIS, will know that the romantic lives of characters have always been a fan-favorite aspect that's been explored, we're getting way more shows that fully lean into the romance as their raison d'être. And now, thanks in large part to hit shows like Outlander, Bridgerton, and Virgin River, romantic TV dramas are starting to come out of the HEA (that's Happily Ever After) woodwork.

We have for you now a list of romantic TV dramas, both new and returning, for you to sink your will-they-won't-they (They absolutely will!) teeth into. Keep your eyes on this piece, because we'll be adding to it as new seasons and television shows are announced. Now, let's get to the lovey dovey good stuff!

A Discovery Of Witches (Season 3) - January, 2022

While the second season of A Discovery of Witches only debuted for those in the U.S. back at the end of June 2021, its U.K. premiere took place in January. This means that the series about witch Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) and her very long-lived vampire mate, Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), breaking all kinds of ancient magical-being rules and causing lots of trouble will be back in January of 2022.

As opposed to having to wait several months, compared with fans across the pond, for the Sky One original series to bring us the final chapter of the saga, fans in the United States can rejoice in knowing that AMC+ is all set to show the action right near the beginning of the year this time around. So, we won't have to wait too long to see how all of the magical shenanigans wrap up after that dramatic Season 2 finale!

Sweet Magnolias (Season 2) - February 4, 2022

What a pleasant surprise Sweet Magnolias was when it hit Netflix in May 2020. Set in fictional Serenity, South Carolina, this small town romance (which is also based on a long-running series of books, this time by author Sherryl Woods) focuses on the lives of best friends Helen (Heather Headley), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), as they begin a new business together and deal with an intriguing assortment of family and personal issues, including hot but dastardly ex-husbands, shady estranged husbands, town mysteries, and a lot of truly appealing potential mates. 

Sweet Magnolias Season 2 finally started filming in late spring 2021, with production ending in mid-July, and while we still have a few weeks until we're able to binge it all, we now know that February 4, 2022 will bring the relief we've been looking for! This is another romantic drama that wrapped with a shocking cliffhanger and several unanswered questions, so all eyes will be eager to see how our beloved trio moves forward after the events of the Season 1 finale. 

Outlander (Season 6) - March 6, 2022

One could easily claim that this Starz hit is the show which began the current day obsession with romantic television dramas, as Outlander will be heading into Season 6 when it finally returns. This time-traveling romance is based on Diana Gabaldon's long-running series, and sees 1940s nurse Claire (Caitriona Balfe) being accidentally transported to 1700s Scotland and soon falling for Jamie (Sam Heughan), and him doing everything in his power to protect her as they marry, have children, and endure a variety of beyond difficult times with a number of friends, family, and outright enemies. 

Outlander ran with intense action and nudity-filled romantic sexytimes so that Bridgerton could... also run, but in a slightly different direction, OK? Filming on Season 6 (which will have fewer episodes than usual) began in early February 2021, and it's now expected to premiere on Sunday, March 6, 2022. And, the show has already been renewed for Season 7, which will make up for the lower episode count of the upcoming season by giving viewers 16 episodes! If next year is anything like 2021, March will feel like it's here in no time! 

Sanditon (Season 2) - March 20, 2022

Looks like Outlander is going to have some Sunday night romance competition! Masterpiece has always brought a lot of joy to PBS, so how about the surprise renewal of Sanditon? Season 1 aired way back in the dawn of 2020, with it having already been cancelled by British broadcaster ITV by then. It seemed that the series was totally dead in the water, despite leaving fans without the happily ever after ending which they'd become accustomed to with other Jane Austen adaptations (as this is another, albeit of her final and unfinished manuscript), but that decision was blissfully reversed in early May 2021. 

Sanditon, which follows independent and high-spirited Charlotte (Rose Williams) as she leaves her family behind and tries to navigate life and love in the eponymous seaside town, started production on Season 2 in October 2021. Luckily, it won't be too long into 2022 before we can watch her defy expectations once more, as it's now set to hit screens on Sunday, March 20, 2022, and with two, lovely, brand new suitors.  Even better, Sanditon has already been given the green light for Season 3, as well!

Bridgerton (Season 2) - March 25

Bridgerton is far from the first show to feature a love story as its main focus, but it has certainly set pop culture ablaze unlike any other recent series. Season 1 found its hit-making status by following along with the first novel in Julia Quinn's series of romances and letting us watch along as Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset, The Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), went from enemies to friends to lovers. Now, Season 2 is on track to cover the romance of Daphne's big bro, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey), as he and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) get some pants feelings for one another in short order, while also deepening the seeds of love previously planted elsewhere with the Bridgerton clan.  

Luckily, we are getting very close to Bridgerton Season 2 being on screen for us to enjoy. Filming officially wrapped as of late November 2021, and the official debut was set by Christmas Day, when a lovely announcement video featuring much of the cast let fans know that we can watch it all unfold on March 25! This means we won't have to wait too much longer for more romantic action and scandalous sexual discovery!

Miss Scarlet & The Duke (Season 2) - 2022

OK, this one is actually a tiny bit of a cheat, but I'm including the divine 1880s-set, Victorian London detective series Miss Scarlet & The Duke for all of you romance fans who also like a cozy mystery and some good, old-fashioned longing. 

The show follows Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips), who takes over her dead father's detective business despite being a woman in the 1880s who's expected to marry and spend her life raising children. As she investigates cases, she crosses paths with William "The Duke" Wellington (Stuart Martin), a police inspector who was a childhood friend, considered her late father a mentor for quite a while, and does not take kindly to her inserting herself into all of his police investigations. As you might imagine, Miss Scarlet and The Duke have had a thing for each other for years, and every time they interact, there are loads of sparks. Season 1 did very well for PBS and Masterpiece, and Season 2 should come along at some point in 2022, though we're without a specific date yet.

When Calls The Heart (Season 9) - 2022

As Hallmark's longest running romantic drama, When Calls the Heart has retained a lot of fans while weathering cast changes, controversies, and very opinionated viewers who are not at all happy with how a certain love triangle turned out. The sweet romance, set in a small Canadian coal-mining town in 1910, and based on Janette Oke's book of the same name, sees high society lady Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow) learn to deal with life in the town after she's assigned to teach there. 

And, as one might imagine, stories about the lives and loves of Elizabeth and the townsfolk have blossomed through eight seasons so far, with Season 9 set to debut at some point in 2022. Hopefully, viewers will see a February or March debut, which will have the new season follow how the series has premiered for several previous years.

Virgin River (Season 4) - 2022

Virgin River fans rejoiced in September 2021, when it was announced that the romantic drama would return for Season 4 and Season 5 on Netflix. Obviously, work hasn't begun on the fifth installment just yet, but the fourth season got underway in late July, not long after Season 3 premiered.

And, it's a good thing, too, because the most recent set of episodes left fans with a number of big cliffhangers after the Virgin River Season 3 ending. Jack (Martin Henderson) proposed to Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge), who responded by giving him her shocking pregnancy news. Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) and her new husband, Todd (Patrick Sabongui), continued to be a major problem (i.e., big ol' buttheads) when it came to Jack and the twins. Brady (Ben Hollingsworth) was arrested for shooting Jack, and Doc's (Tim Matheson) supposed surprise grandson showed up in town unexpectedly. Basically, the 2022 debut of Season 4 (which will hopefully be sometime between April and July) can't come soon enough! 

Bridgerton Spinoff (Season 1) - TBD

While it's no great shock that Netflix wants to capitalize on the massive success of Bridgerton as much as possible, even fans of the books were probably taken aback when it was announced that a limited series is in the works, which will follow younger versions of Queen Charlotte, Lady Violet Bridgerton, and Lady Danbury. 

The show will follow the women as they rise in their stations in life, and probably offer up views of the juicy romances they had as youngsters, with most of the focus set to be on Charlotte. There are still a lot of things we don't know about this series right now, as the cast, when production might start and when it will hit Netflix are still mysteries. But, we do know that the series will be written by Shonda Rhimes herself, and she'll also serve as one of the executive producers.

As you can see, fans of romantic dramas already have a lot to look forward to in the coming months and years when it comes to new content, and there will be plenty of new episodes to binge as we head into this winter and beyond!

Fans of the May 2020 Netflix hit Sweet Magnolias will know that the wait for Season 2 has, indeed, been a long one. The series left viewers with a lot of very intense cliffhangers, and several that likely lead to big changes in the characters' lives, so everyone who watched the first season has been eagerly awaiting more episodes. Now that Sweet Magnolias Season 2 has finished filming, though, star JoAnna Garcia Swisher is talking about why she was so "shocked" while working on the new season.

While those of us who've been looking for any news we can find on the upcoming season of Sweet Magnolias knows that we've already been promised that many of our cliffhanger questions will be answered, there's still a lot we don't know about Season 2. JoAnna Garcia Swisher spoke with Parade about the new season recently, and when asked whether or not there will be more shocking moments like the ones in the previous finale, replied:

I can bet that a lot of "new drama" will be sure to unfold once we're able to get into Sweet Magnolias Season 2! The first season saw the three best friends at the center, Maddie (Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley), and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), have their worlds rocked when one of Maddie's sons got involved in a terrible car accident on prom night. We were left knowing that he'd been banged up pretty badly, but never found out who was the passenger in the vehicle, and whether or not that person would be better (or worse) off than him.

There's a chance the passenger was Dana Sue's daughter, and if that's the case, the repercussions of the accident could really lead to a big wedge between the lifelong buds.

As Sweet Magnolias' showrunner, Sheryl J. Anderson, has noted before, the Season 2 premiere will pick up minutes after the finale, so we'll be getting the answers to our burning accident questions very soon. But, Garcia Swisher has also said that viewers should "hold on to your hats," because the next season sounds like it will be way more of "a wild ride" than Season 1, and added that there will be plenty of margarita nights on tap for the ladies, as there will be "like gallons of pouring [it] out" over all of their new troubles.

The actress was also asked if we'll see the Season 2 finale set up a potential Season 3, and she responded quite enthusiastically, saying:

Well, it sounds like there is certain to be a lot of family and romantic intrigue in Season 2, and I, for one, can't wait until we can watch JoAnna Garcia Swisher and the rest of the Sweet Magnolias cast get into all of it!

Friends, it's already been well over a year since we were able to enjoy the small town drama endured by best friends Dana Sue, Helen, and Maddie on Sweet Magnolias Season 1. Though the romantic series was renewed way back in July 2020, the world had other plans when it came to the cast and crew being able to get into production. Luckily, the hit was finally able to wrap filming on Season 2 recently, and we now know when we might actually be able to see it return to Netflix.

The wait for Season 2 of Sweet Magnolias has been a long and difficult one. However, fans can now break out the margarita night supplies (make mine a double), because not only has the new season wrapped, but author Sherryl Woods, who wrote the novels the show is based on, recently told Southern Living that we could see Sweet Magnolias Season 2 as soon as January or February 2022!

The show debuted on Netflix on May 19, 2020, and arrived at the perfect time for those of us who love small town romances with loads of drama to get our binge on. But, the worldwide health crisis that had already shuttered a number of productions led to the series not being able to get up and running on new episodes easily. This meant that we had to put our hopes on hold for a quick-to-come-by resolution to some massive cliffhangers for Season 1, but the wait to find out who else was in that dangerous car crash sounds like it will soon be at an end.

You didn't forget the car accident, did you? OK, as a refresher, Maddie's sons, Kyle and Tyler, got into a big ol' argument at a prom after party, which led to Kyle running off, jumping into Tyler's car angry and driving away. As you might imagine, in his not-so-great mental state, young Kyle crashed the car, and while we saw that he was alive but injured in the finale, there was also a mystery passenger who needed to be rescued. Viewers were left wondering both who this person was and how badly they'd been hurt.

Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson has already promised that Season 2 will reveal even more prom night secrets than the passenger of that car, and that they'll answer our remaining Season 1 questions, as well. But, it also turns out that there's even more for fans to look forward to when Sweet Magnolias returns. As Woods added in her interview:

Minutes?! This means that the new season could start at the hospital, or even at the accident site as they pull the second person out of the car! Woods also said that Season 2 offers plenty of "twists and turns" for those who've read her books, so it sounds like Sweet Magnolias will be quite the treat for fans when it returns to Netflix.

Like millions of other romance fans, my Netflix subscription works overtime whenever a new season of Virgin River hits one of the best streaming services. The romantic drama, which is based on a loooong novel series, debuted in December 2019, and has become one of the streamer’s flagship shows by providing audiences with romance, twisty plots, and just enough drama to make the whole package even more entertaining and bingable.

This doesn't, however, mean that the small town romance is anywhere near being the only show to deliver those kinds of benefits to fans who enjoy a lovey-dovey series with some bite. I’ve put together a list of several shows like Virgin River with feel-good and swoon-worthy romances, surprising storylines, and more shocking developments than you can ever hope for that you can watch right away as we all await the release of Virgin River Season 6 on the 2024 TV schedule!

Jane The Virgin (Amazon)

Jane the Virgin sees Jane Villanueva’s (Gina Rodriguez) well-planned young life become completely upended after what's supposed to be a non-eventful doctor's visit ends with her accidentally inseminated with a sperm sample from her boss, Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni). Our heroine then has to figure out how to handle a very unexpected virginal pregnancy while juggling college, her job, family complications, being engaged to her incredibly surprised and sweet fiancé, Michael (Brett Dier), and the hopeful future as a published author that she wants for herself.

Why it's a good option for Virgin River fans: I know what you’re thinking, but I didn't just choose this show because the word "virgin" is in the title. This play on tried and true Latin American telenovela tropes (which are quite similar to those that American soap opera fans know well) should be right up the alley of anyone who loves to follow a central love story with several other romances on the margins, and get immersed in lots of good, twist-filled plots. Some of the events in Jane the Virgin are far more bonkers than what we've seen in Virgin River, even five seasons in, but that just makes it extra appealing for a good binge.

Hart Of Dixie (Freevee)

Up and coming New York City doctor Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) is shocked when she’s invited by a stranger in the tiny town of Bluebell, Alabama to work with him at his medical practice. But, she accepted because she needed a life change anyway. When she arrives, though, Zoe realizes that the strange medical professional in question has actually died and left her his half of the practice as part of his will, putting her in the cross hairs of her new partner, Dr. Breeland (Tim Matheson), and his snooty daughter, Lemon (Jaime King), and leading her to several love connections and a whole new life.

Why it's a good option for Virgin River fans: Hart of Dixie is sillier by far than anything we’ve seen (or are likely to see in the future) on Virgin River, but because of its slightly goofy nature it really is a joy to watch. When you’re still in need of a small town romance, but with unexpected plot twists and lots of nosy towns folk in a fish out of water story, this show is definitely for you. Plus, Tim Matheson plays a “cranky old doc” role here which is not entirely dissimilar to his part as Doc Mullins on the Netflix staple. Check it out with your Amazon Prime subscription on Freevee.

Last Tango In Halifax (Netflix)

This BBC One dramedy, which ran for four seasons and aired on PBS in the United States, follows two 70-something widowed people, Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid), who find their way back to each other after many decades apart, when their respective grandsons put their information on social media. The former young almost-lovers start a new romance, and have to unite their (extremely) complicated familial situations, to hilarious, disastrous, and very surprising results.

Why it's a good option for Virgin River fans: Please believe me when I say you have never known small town, family-based drama like the small town family-based drama seen on Last Tango in Halifax. I seriously doubt that anyone could see several of these storylines and additional romances coming as they watch the first episode, and I can pretty much guarantee that these complex relationships and wild plot twists will have you at least considering staying up all night to watch every season.

Sweet Magnolias (Netflix)

Sweet Magnolias is a romantic drama that’s a very natural option for anyone who needs additional Virgin River-style storytelling. The drama (which has a fourth season on the way) focuses on the professional and personal lives of lifelong friends, Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), Helen (Heather Headley), and Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), a.k.a. the titular “sweet magnolias,” as they deal with family, career, and romantic troubles and triumphs in their quaint (and fictional) hometown of Serenity, South Carolina.

Why it's a good option for Virgin River fans: Obviously, once again, we have the small town factor working in our favor, but viewers will also get a series filled with incredibly intricate relationship statuses (both romantic and not) across its three seasons so far, lots of hot and steamy chemistry between the leading ladies and their love interests, and several characters who have to make major decisions (and do make major mistakes) along the way. It's Virgin River with fancier clothes and southern accents, and Season 4 is on the way y'all. Now’s a great time to catch up!

Gilmore Girls (Netflix)

Gilmore Girls is the still-much beloved story of former teen mom Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and her now teen daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel) as they endure all of the ups and downs one goes through when attempting to find your path in life, fall in love (with the right person), and grow up. This happens as the ladies reconnect with Lorelai's rich, strict and largely disapproving parents, who are going to help Rory get into the college of her dreams and want to forge a bond with the granddaughter they barely know whether they overstep the boundaries set by Lorelai or not.

Why it's a good option for Virgin River fans: While definitely more humorous than Virgin River and dramatic in a less twisty/soapy way, Gilmore Girls absolutely delivers the goods. There’s plenty of teen angst, several adult romances, more than one love triangle, roughly a metric ton of emotional family drama, and adorable love stories for several side characters, along with lots of laughs, coffee, and Pop Tarts for good measure. The show is a treat that will warm your heart in several ways.

Sanditon (PBS Masterpiece)

Sanditon is a delightful, three-season, Regency-set historical romance, which follows young Charlotte (Rose Williams) as she leaves her large family and small farming community behind to spend the summer with a few new friends in the eponymous seaside resort town. While she's embraced by several in the community, spirited Charlotte also notices how scheming and ambitious many of those in the seemingly tranquil town truly are, as she looks to make friends and find her place in this new home.

Why it's a good option for Virgin River fans: Remember when Mel and Jack were silently pining for one another because he was still attached to dumb ol', problem-causing Charmaine? Well, as Charlotte and Sidney (Theo James) start their enemies to lovers transition, there is a lot of solid pining to be had, which is transformed in later seasons to a fierce will-they-won’t-they-why-the-hell-can’t-they?! with Charlotte and a brand new love interest. There are also several juicy stories involving things like forbidden love, scheming, lots of double-crossing deals, and more than a few instances of unrequited love.

Everwood (Freevee)

After superstar Manhattan brain surgeon Andy Brown (the late Treat Williams) is widowed, he moves himself and his two kids to the idyllic mountain town of Everwood, Colorado for a brand new start. Once they arrive, Andy and his teen son, Ephram (Gregory Smith) begin to learn how to open up, both to each other and to love, and learn how to navigate all of the ups and downs that come with their new emotional vulnerability.

Why it's a good option for Virgin River fans: Are you seeing a theme among these choices, yet? Everwood is here for Virgin River viewers who need additional folksy townspeople, medical subplots (one of which involves Ephram's romantic life in a big way), difficult family/community dynamics, forbidden romance, and all of the charm and ooey gooey love stuff you find in a typical episode of the Netflix winner.

Well, my word! It has been a long time since we've had any solid updates on Sweet Magnolias Season 2, hasn't it? And, you can bet your best margarita recipe that fans have been waiting with bated breath to see what the new season might hold for Dana Sue, Maddie, Helen and all of their friends, family, and sorta foes. After a late May 2020 debut, the hit was renewed in July, but production has been slow going, probably for obvious reasons. But, wait! Now, Netflix's Sweet Magnolias Season 2 is finally gaining some momentum, with the arrival of new series regulars and a release window!

Get ready to celebrate a Sweet Magnolias success with your chips, dips, and margs, because according to Deadline, Season 2 of the romantic drama is currently in production and eyeing a 2022 premiere. With that news, comes more glad tidings, as three of the players from Season 1 who had smaller parts will now become regulars in the Sweet Magnolias cast. Brandon Quinn (Ronnie Sullivan), Dion Johnstone (Erik Whitley), and Jamie Lynn Spears (Noreen Fitzgibbons) have all signed on to show up around the small town of Serenity, South Carolina a lot more frequently.

Seeing as how it's been nearly a year since Sweet Magnolias debuted, you might not quite remember who these characters are and what kind of role they played in Season 1, but, let me assure you, all of them returning for larger parts in the new set of episodes could mean some very big things for the series.

Noreen is the mistress of Maddie's ex-husband, Bill. He cheated on Maddie with the much younger woman, who was a nurse at his medical practice, got her pregnant, left Maddie and became engaged to Noreen. But, Bill is basically trash, and while it took Noreen some time to see it, she did finally notice how he treated her and one of his sons with Maddie, Kyle (whom Noreen had befriended), and decided to leave Serenity and Bill behind before the season's end. It never felt like that was going to be a permanent solution to Noreen's storyline, so it will be good to see her return. Especially with Kyle getting into more than a bit of trouble in the finale.

Now, if you don't remember Erik, well, I think you may not have paid full attention to Sweet Magnolias Season 1, because he made quite an impression during his, relatively few, times on screen. This series is nothing without its romantic complications, and Erik (who's the sous chef at Dana Sue's restaurant), spent all season harboring a mean crush on Helen. As you might recall, though, Helen quickly fell back in with her on-again, off-again ex-boyfriend of over 20 years, Ryan, when he rolled back into town suddenly, and even though Helen liked Erik, she only saw him as a friend. By the finale, though, Helen and Ryan had broken each other's hearts all over again, and she and Erik were growing closer than ever.

As for Ronnie, while I'm glad he'll be around a lot more in Sweet Magnolias Season 2, I do worry about what this means for Dana Sue and farmer Jeremy. Ronnie is Dana Sue's estranged husband (and father to her daughter, Annie), who returned unexpectedly in the Season 1 finale. It was abundantly clear that Ronnie and Dana Sue still had the hot hots for one another (though it seems he cheated on her), and with her now needing financial help with her restaurant, and him being willing to pitch in, it makes sense that he'd stick around. But! After a season filled with disappointments, Dana Sue had just found potential romance with Jeremy, so we can probably bet that Ronnie's return will muck that up, at least for a time.

Basically, we are guaranteed more dramatic romantic entanglements and strained family dynamics just with these three characters coming back full time for Sweet Magnolias Season 2, so the wait might be long, but it will be worth it! Netflix is, of course, no stranger to massive hits, and the streamer struck gold once more last May, when it released Sweet Magnolias Season 1. The small town drama, which is based on a series of 11 novels by author Sherryl Woods, captured viewers and carried away their heartstrings on margarita-scented wings of love, which is totally fitting, considering how many romances there are to be had on the series, just during the first season.

While we await the Season 2 adventures of Helen, Dana Sue, Maddie, and all of their friends, family, exes, and foes, now seems like a perfect time to take a look back and revisit all of those romantic entanglements. So, here are all of the relationship statuses from Sweet Magnolias before we head into Season 2!

Maddie Townsend And Coach Cal Maddox

Well, things were going quite well for Maddie and Cal despite the fact that Maddie was still smarting from being cheated on and abandoned by Bill, and that Cal is her son, Tyler's, new baseball coach. The finale even saw Cal declare his love for Maddie, while she admitted she was ready to move forward with him. But, nothing lasts forever, does it? When Maddie found out from Tyler that a major league scout came to watch him play without her knowledge, because Cal had set it up, it caused a giant rift between the newly connected twosome. Which leads us, unfortunately, right back to Bill...

Maddie Townsend And Bill Townsend

What a mess. And, I'm not talking in general terms here, I literally mean that Dr. Bill Townsend is an actual mess. He started his near reign of emotional terror by cheating on Maddie with his (much younger) nurse Noreen Fitzgibbons, got her pregnant, and then left Maddie and their three children for a new life with Noreen. As we watched Bill and Noreen try to handle his generally less than impressed children and all of the gossip surrounding their union, though, it became clear that he was not so sure of himself. The finale saw Bill dare to ask Maddie to take him back, so she's got a big decision to make in Season 2.

Helen Decatur And Ryan Wingate

These two put themselves in an unbelievable situation, which I'm sure that many folks have found themselves in IRL. After a decades long on-again-off-again romance between lawyer Helen and her high school love Ryan, he comes back to town and they immediately take up again, as though all of their difficulties have been solved by time apart. But, it becomes very, very clear that they still want different things out of life when they (FINALLY!) have a conversation at the beginning of the finale. Ryan has no desire for children or staying in one place, while Helen wants the exact opposite.

Getting everything out in the open prompts Ryan to leave town again, and leaves Helen with a serious case of heartbreak. That is, unless she can actually see what's been right in front of her face for weeks...

Helen Decatur And Chef Erik Whitley

Lawd, yes! Now we're talkin', Helen! From the moment Dana Sue's sous chef laid eyes on Helen it was clear to everyone that he had a bad case of the romantic googly eyes for the legal eagle. Unfortunately, Helen quickly got herself wrapped back up in the dying relationship with Ryan and was far too busy to notice. Luckily, she did see how kind, talented and caring Chef Erik was with others and to her, and that helped cement a friendship.

With Ryan newly out of the way toward the end of the finale, Erik came by with his famous homemade brownies and cinnamon ice cream to help cheer her up. A bit of dessert (not a euphemism) and a nice chat, and it looks like Helen might be able to get over Ryan by getting under the wonderful chef at some point during Season 2.

Dana Sue Sullivan And Farmer Jeremy Reynolds

I have to admit, I was really, really salty while watching the first eight episodes of Sweet Magnolias, because each of the other two leading ladies got multiple potential love interests, while everyone's favorite over-worked and sometimes slightly cranky chef, Dana Sue, just got diabetes. But! That all changes in Episode 9, when Ryan introduces Dana Sue to Farmer Jeremy so that he can replenish her kitchen (definitely a euphemism). The sparks that flew when these two met were basically immediate, with every sentence directed at the other seeming to be filled to the brim with sexual innuendo. Dana Sue and Jeremy even kissed within just a few hours of meeting! Unfortunately...

Dana Sue Sullivan And Ronnie Sullivan

What are you gonna do? Dana Sue might be a hard-working business owner now, but Sweet Magnolias Season 1 makes it very clear that she had a wild youth and a somewhat mysterious past which took her away from her small hometown for a while. Part of that past involves her estranged husband and the father to her daughter, Ronnie.

This is only an issue because, while it sounds a lot like Ronnie stepped out on Dana Sue, they're not officially divorced yet. He's also a good dad to their teen, Annie, despite having moved away. Oh, and there's also the little matter of Dana Sue needing to ask him for money to help save her restaurant, which brings Ronnie back to town and puts ideas into his head about trying to win Dana Sue back.

Bill Townsend And Noreen Fitzgibbons

I really have to congratulate the makers of Sweet Magnolias. It would have been so easy for them to paint Noreen, who was the nurse in Bill's medical practice he ended up having an affair with and getting pregnant, as a scandalous "other woman" character. Instead, while you might not like what Noreen helped Bill do in breaking up his marriage to Maddie, we certainly sympathize with her more and more as Season 1 goes on, and see how he used her to deal with his disappointment over his floundering marriage.

Noreen comes to see that, as well, along with how poorly Bill treats his youngest son, Kyle, which leads to a genuine friendship between her and the teen. After a visit from her brother drives home how unhappy she is, Noreen leaves Bill to move home.

Annie Sullivan And Tyler Townsend

If you've noticed a pattern of potential love triangles on Sweet Magnolias, there's no need to worry that the teens on the show get left out of the messy, romantic fun. Dana Sue's daughter Annie has a serious crush on Tyler, who mostly just sees her as a friend, but also, you know, kinda also like likes her, too, and they did kiss after Annie got drunk at a party. But, not only is Tyler sorta dating cheerleader Cece, while Annie went to prom with nice guy Simon, a third complicating factor is Tyler's little brother, Kyle.

He, of course, has the biggest crush on Annie, and would be more than happy to tell the world, except he can tell that, once again, he's also going to lose out to his popular older brother when it comes to Annie's affections.

Of course, the trajectory of all of these relationships could be thrown off course by the events of the finale, which showed Kyle taking off in Tyler's car after getting upset and crashing into a tree, with a, currently unknown, teen passenger along for the dangerous ride. We'll have to wait until Sweet Magnolias Season 2 on Netflix to see who else was in the car and how the aftermath of that accident affects the denizens of Serenity, South Carolina and their love lives.

Actress Jamie Lynn Spears had the internet all sorts of confused recently after she publicly went after Elon Musk for the deaths of an untold number of her cats. Now, the actress is clarifying her original statement and assuring fans that while she still has some valid gripes, the first statement may need some things expounded upon.

In a since-expired Instagram Story, the Sweet Magnolias actress better explained her argument with how Tesla vehicles are dangerous to the lives of cats and other animals. She also conceded that it's not entirely the car or Elon Musk's fault that she keeps losing cats to Tesla's, as well as some other key points:

Perhaps the most important point clarified for me was that Jamie Lynn Spears did not run over any cats because the original post had me really wondering just how many times someone can accidentally back over a cat. Overall, it sounds like Spears was more or less calling attention to a legitimate issue to Tesla makers about animal safety. She wouldn't be the first either, as government regulations have required Tesla to now release models that emit noise at low speeds to warn pedestrians and animals.

Jamie Lynn Spears' amended statement is much better than the original statement. Spears has since deleted the video from her social media platforms but, as we all know, nothing is ever permanently deleted from the internet.

Jamie Lynn Spears didn't get a ton of sympathy for her post on social media, as memes began to surface that she was pointing the finger at Tesla for the deaths of many of her cats instead of at herself. It seemed the implication in the original video was that Spears was hitting her own cats with a Tesla though, as Spears went on to clarify in her follow-up, she was not the one who hit the cats. She also pointed out she may need to keep a closer eye on her cats, which may be why she still hasn't clarified how many cats were claimed in these accidents. Obviously, we know the number is at least one, but how much further does that number climb?

All we know is that Sweet Magnolias Season 2 is in development over at Netflix. Continue to stick with CinemaBlend in the meantime for updates on its development and the latest news happening in television and movies.

Even if you, somehow, don't subscribe to Netflix, you probably know a fair bit about the breadth of originals the streamer has been committed to bringing viewers for the past several years. Pretty much any category of television show / movie that one could be intrigued by is a part of the stable of original content currently on offer. Increasingly, that seems to include programming of a romantic variety, such as the recently released Bridgerton. It would seem that Netflix is really starting to follow in Hallmark Channel's footsteps, and I am truly here for the increased sexytimes!

Hallmark has become known for its wholesome Christmas movies and its romantically-themed, but equally light on horizontal business, TV shows such as When Calls the Heart, Chesapeake Shores, and Good Witch. Netflix, meanwhile, has really stepped up its romance game in just the past few years, but is also giving fans more of the sexytimes they crave to help make sure those stories are...fulfilled to completion. (Stop complaining. That was totally appropriate, and you know it!)

At any rate, romance fans are getting a lot more of what they love on the small screen, thanks to Netflix, and here are the ways the streamer has started to put their own spin on what Hallmark's been doing for decades.

High-Quality Romances

I'm not suggesting that Hallmark's shows and movies aren't high-quality romances, but Netflix has the benefit of being a streamer with, possibly, even bigger money bags behind it. And, this has led to an increased ability to not only buy the rights to several novels or book series and adapt them for the screen (which Hallmark has also done many times), but to make sure the projects they take on have the best sets, costumes, music and everything else needed to really make the finished products sing in ways that the Hallmark programs just don't usually match.

As much as I love Hallmark's Christmas fare, for example, there's no doubt that the few movies the network has which trip back through time can't really compete in the period details / costume department when compared to a show like Bridgerton (from Shonda Rhimes, no less). The series, which is set in Regency England, never slept on the sumptuous details when it came to outfitting its cast. I cannot imagine that Queen Charlotte's wigs, alone, didn't cost a fortune, for example.

And, while Hallmark properties are always very distinctly Hallmark, I feel as though, if we didn't know that Bridgerton or Virgin River were Netflix shows, and managed to see them elsewhere, they wouldn't be at all out of place on Starz, ABC or some other network / streamer.

More Feel-Good Shows

There are only so many hours in the day when those behind a cable network like Hallmark are looking to fill their schedule with programming, but, as anyone who's stayed up way past their bedtime for a bingeathon can attest, Netflix has no such restrictions. Audiences face no limits on the number of new shows which Netflix can populate their viewing streams with, regardless of the number of episodes each series has. So we can get all eight episodes of Dash & Lily on November 10, and then enjoy a return trip to Virgin River with 10 new installments on November 27.

Speaking of Virgin River, Netflix's ability (and willingness) to release new seasons all in one go recently helped Season 2 top The Mandalorian when it came to minutes viewed via streaming for the last week of November, with the romantic drama likely getting a boost from the show releasing in full on Black Friday, as opposed to debuting weekly.

In just a little over a year, Netflix has been able to bring fans two full seasons of Virgin River, and one season each of Dash & Lily, Bridgerton, and the late spring hit Sweet Magnolias. All are shows which are based on extremely popular romance novel series, and leave fans with some serious warm and fuzzy feels. If the streamer can keep up the pace (and I have no doubt it can), it can overtake Hallmark in the feel-good show contest before long.

Ramped Up Christmas Programming

Dash & Lily is actually just one example of the ways in which Netflix has done a great job of beefing up its Christmas programming over the last several years. While I don't know that we'll ever see the streamer debut 40 new Christmas movies per year (Hi, Hallmark!) it is making serious strides in the holiday-specific film and TV show space. A Christmas Prince got things off to a big holiday romance start in 2017, so much so that the movie has had two Christmas-set sequels.

Since then, we've also seen romantic Christmas movies like The Holiday Calendar, The Princess Switch (and it's 2020 sequel), The Knight Before Christmas, Operation Christmas Drop, and several others fulfill the need for holiday romance. On top of that, we've also gotten some Christmas shows like the aforementioned Dash & Lily, including Merry Happy Whatever, Over Christmas and two seasons of Home for Christmas (which is a very fun watch, if you haven't seen it). So, basically, Netflix is really trying to cover the romance thing from all angles, and they're getting a handle on this niche market very quickly.

You Didn't Think I Forgot The Sexytimes, Did You?

And, here is where being a streaming service which can show whatever it wants whenever it wants comes in super handy. Literally no one in the world who sits down to watch Hallmark movies or shows goes there to see anything even remotely hot-n-heavy. So, if you're a lover of romance, but would prefer your adaptations to be a bit more arousing in nature, Netflix is trying to make sure you are well and truly sated with several of their shows.

Virgin River, while light on the sexytimes so far, has not been shy about bringing us the smolder of acute sexual tension between the leads, and Season 2 did, finally, see them stamp their passports to bone town. Sweet Magnolias made sure to have each leading female character entertain more than one romantic possibility, with a similar level of heat coming into play for a few of those potential matches. And, if you haven't watched Bridgerton yet, just know that the shots you see above and at the top of this article are just the very tip of the sexytime iceberg for that show.

All in all, Netflix seems to have run with the basic feel-good Hallmark romance model and been able to either replicate it (The Princess Switch) or turn it up several notches (Bridgerton), so that viewers can head to the streamer no matter what their particular romance needs are at any given moment. I'd say that's a good way to keep folks coming back to you to investigate new offerings. Now, if the service could just adapt some of the amazing romance novels by black authors, they'd really be in business.

Sweet Magnolias was a Netflix 2020 summer hit. It is like a good Hallmark movie turned into a sentimental, feel-good series, and follows three best friends as they deal with different life challenges, while also opening a business together. The Sweet Magnolias cast may look a bit familiar because many of the main and supporting cast have appeared in numerous shows and movies prior to the series.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Maddie Townsend)

Maddie Townsend begins the first season of Sweet Magnolias as a woman who is the talk of the town, but not in a good way. She’s in the midst of a divorce after her husband had an affair. Throughout Sweet Magnolias Season 1, Maddie finds herself again and starts to fall for her son’s baseball coach. Many will remember JoAnna Garcia Swisher for her role as Sam in Nickelodeon’s original horror anthology series Are You Afraid Of The Dark?

Garcia-Swisher’s next big TV role was in 2001, appearing opposite Reba McEntire in Reba. Her next main TV role came in 2008 on the short-lived CW series Privileged, while some fans might recognize her for playing Ariel in Once Upon a Time. Throughout her career, she has had recurring roles in the series Party of Five, Freaks and Geeks, Gossip Girl, The Mindy Project, and Royal Pains. JoAnna Garcia Swisher has also appeared in the movies American Pie 2, Not Another Teen Movie, Revenge of the Bridesmaids, The Internship, and Fist Fight.

Brooke Elliott (Dana Sue Sullivan)

Dana Sue runs a successful restaurant. Though her career is thriving, her love life has had a bit of a rollercoaster run lately, seeing as how she is no longer with her husband--likely due to an affair on his part. Dana Sue gets a new love interest during Sweet Magnolias Season 1, but then her handsome ex-husband re-enters her life. Brooke Elliott has a theater background, so if you’ve been to Taboo, one of the touring productions of Wicked, The Pirate Queen, or Beauty and the Beast, then you may have seen her on-stage.

Elliott may be most known for her role on Drop Dead Diva, where she played the main character, Jane Bingum, from 2009 to 2014. The actress also appeared on episodes of Law & Order: Trial by Jury and Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings. She also lent her talents to the movies What Women Want and More Beautiful for Having Been Broken.

Heather Headley (Helen Decatur)

Helen once left Serenity but has come back and become the town lawyer, and one of its biggest cheerleaders. Just as she’s settling in, someone from her past shows up and makes her really think about what she wants from life. Heather Headley is a well-known, talented, and respected singer and Broadway performer. She has earned both Grammy Awards and Tony Awards for her music and acting. Headley has appeared in Broadway productions of The Lion King, Aida, Dreamgirls, The Bodyguard, and The Color Purple.

Headley’s screen acting credits include Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Breakin’ All the Rules, She’s Gotta Have It (the Netflix series), and Chicago Med. In 2021, she’ll appear in the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect.

Justin Bruening (Cal Maddox)

Cal Maddox is new to Serenity, and he has moved to the small-town to coach their high school baseball team. Immediately, he forms a bond with Maddie that turns to romance. Soap opera and, specifically, All My Children fans will recognize Bruening for his role as Jamie Martin, which he played from 2003 to 2007, and also made some guest appearances in 2011. Bruening’s TV roles also include episodes of Cold Case, CSI: Miami, Castle, Lucifer, and CSI: NY.

Briefly, Bruening became Knight Rider on the NBC reboot series. He also had recurring roles on the series Switched at Birth, Ringer, Grey’s Anatomy, Hawaii Five-O, Ravenswood, and Good Behavior.

Chris Klein (Bill Townsend)

Bill Townsend, better known as the worst character on Sweet Magnolias, is Maddie’s ex-husband, who cheated on her with his assistant. He’s a family physician, but clueless about his family, girlfriend, and ex-wife.

Chris Klein may best be known for his role in the American Pie films. Klein appeared in a string of popular films in the late 1990s and early 2000s, like Election, Here on Earth, We Were Soldiers, The United States of Leland, and Just Friends. He's also had roles in the series Raising Hope, The Grinder, and The Good Guys, and nabbed recurring roles on Winfred and The Flash.

Jamie Lynn Spears (Noreen Fitzgibbons)

Noreen is the former mistress / soon-to-be wife of Bill. She wants to be accepted by the town and her new family so much that she often goes too far to fit into Serenity and Bill’s family. Jamie Lynn Spears is best known for appearing on the Nickelodeon sketch comedy show All That. She then took on the lead role in Zoey 101 from 2005 to 2008.

Spears also appeared in the shows Just Jordan, Miss Guided, and the movie Crossroads.

Dion Johnstone (Erik Whitley)

Erik is a sous chef at Dana Sue’s restaurant, who’s keeping a lot of secrets about his past. He also starts to form a bond with Helen. Dion Johnstone has appeared in the series Departure, Star Falls, Ties That Bind, Stargate SG-1, and Monk. He also showed up in the films Josie and the Pussycats, and A Family Christmas Gift.

Carson Rowland (Ty Townsend)

Ty is the eldest son of Bill and Maddie, who is a popular student and a star of his high school baseball team. He’s best friends with Annie (Anneliese Judge), but has no clue that she harbors a crush on him.

Carson Rowland had a lead role on the Nickelodeon series I Am Frankie, which aired from 2017 to 2018. Rowland had a recurring role on American Housewife, and he appeared in the films Santa in Training, Sinister Seduction, and Dream Killer.

Anneliese Judge (Annie Sullivan)

Annie is Ronnie (Brandon Quinn) and Dana Sue’s daughter. She has a crush on Ty, but he just sees her as a friend. Anneliese Judge is fairly new to acting. She’s only appeared in one major thing besides Sweet Magnolias, a horror movie called Where’s Rose, which hasn’t been released yet.

Logan Allen (Kyle Townsend)

Kyle is Bill and Maddie’s youngest son, who also happens to have a secret crush on Annie, and is much nerdier than his older brother Ty. Logan Allen has appeared on episodes of Creepshow and Talia in the Kitchen. He was also in the film Bernie The Dolphin, and its sequel.

Brandon Quinn (Ronnie Sullivan)

Ronnie is Dana Sue’s ex-husband and Annie’s father. He only appears in one episode of Sweet Magnolias Season 1, but I suspect that he may play a bigger role in Sweet Magnolias Season 2. Brandon Quinn got his start on the ABC Family series Big Wolf on Campus. He then appeared on episodes of The Nightmare Room, What I Like About You, Drake & Josh, Reba, Charmed, Knight Rider, The Vampire Diaries, and Bones.

He had recurring guest roles on The O.C, Entourage, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, Rebel, Die Hart, and The Fosters.

Netflix renewed Sweet Magnolias for season 2, which hopefully airs sometime in 2021. When Sweet Magnolias returns for the second season, we may see some new and familiar faces, so be sure to stay tuned to CinemaBlend for the latest!

After what felt like a tortuous wait, Sweet Magnolias was finally renewed for Season 2 on Netflix back in late July. While we've already been told by showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson that there will be quite another wait in store for fans, as the show isn't filming yet, we have been treated to some tidbits about what we can expect to see when the drama comes back. Along with resolving that big ol' cliffhanger, it sounds like Sweet Magnolias could be a bit different when it returns for Season 2.

Those who fell for Sweet Magnolias when it debuted in May fell fast and hard for the romantic storylines, small town drama and intriguing characters. The show managed to work some mysteries into all of the lovey-dovey stuff, and give each of our main characters a lot of personal and professional trials to deal with during the course of the season. But, Anderson is now teasing how things are going to change around the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina, once we can finally set our eyes upon Season 2. Anderson told Parade:

Whoa, whoa, whoa! New characters? As if handling all of the people around Dana Sue, Helen and Maddie weren't already enough, we're getting new characters? Sheryl J. Anderson didn't offer up any additional info on these interlopers (Kidding. I love them already!), so there's no telling right now just how connected the new residents of Serenity will be to the folks we already know and (probably) love on the show. Also, we don't know if they actually will be brand new to the town, or people who've been around but will now become very important for some reason.

Along with this nice bit of intel regarding the upcoming season, Anderson also dropped word on there being "new alliances between existing citizens." While I can readily admit that this makes it sound as though there will suddenly be some organized crime activity in the small town, it's more likely that a few newer characters from the end of Season 1 and / or some of the folks who were on the fringes of the main action will be stepping up to play a bigger role. Though I wouldn't completely put it past one of those teens to take their angst to criminal levels in Season 2. They feel so much!

It also sounds like we could be getting some surprises with regards to already established players in the Sweet Magnolias world, as Sheryl J. Anderson also said:

Please, please let this very specific quote be about Noreen! Star JoAnna Garcia Swisher has already said that she'd love to have a chance to explore how her Maddie, and Noreen (the young woman who helped break up her marriage to Bill), continue to relate to one another, seeing as how Noreen's become friendly with Maddie's younger son Kyle, and is also pregnant with Bill's baby. Noreen decided to dump Bill, and left town to be closer to her parents, but it sounds a lot like she could be headed back to Serenity sooner rather than later.

We'll just have to wait and see what Sweet Magnolias Season 2 has in store for us when it premieres on Netflix. There's no date set for its debut right now, so be sure to stay tuned to CinemaBlend for updates, and to see what else is coming to TV in the new year!

Sweet Magnolias managed to bring many viewers who were looking for something sweet, warm-hearted, romantic, and plenty dramatic exactly what they were looking for back in May when the first season hit Netflix. With that perfectly-pitched set of episodes, though, came a finale filled with some true shockers, none the least of which was a car accident that could have a major impact on the events of the new season. Luckily for us, the showrunner is now revealing that they already have some big plans for Season 2.

The big question fans were left with after the Season 1 cliffhanger was who, exactly was the passenger in the vehicle, and while Sweet Magnolias' showrunner, Sheryl J. Anderson, has already promised that the show will answer some of the questions we were left with while posing even more, she's now teasing what might come from that accident. When asked by Parade who was in the car, Anderson said:

Um...EXCUSE US?! What does that mean?! As you might remember (Some spoilers ahead!), there was a not-so-little prom afterparty going on, which led to Maddie's eldest son, Tyler, getting into a fight, which his little brother Kyle tried to break up. Tyler told him to stay out of it, and Kyle (poor, often overlooked Kyle) took it very personally and went running off, jumping into a car and driving away. But, not before a mystery passenger got in beside him, and that person could, potentially, be very hurt. (End spoilers!)

What other big prom night surprise could fans be in for when Sweet Magnolias comes back for Season 2? Did Dana Sue and Ronnie make time to have sex in the car on the way to the accident site? Is she pregnant now? With twins? Alright, I need this show to come back with new episodes sooner rather than later, before I start making up completely implausible things about all of the characters. Even the tertiary ones!

There was a lot packed into Sweet Magnolias' Season 1 finale, but Anderson said that fans shouldn't expect any of the characters to be on a smooth path once the show returns. And, yes, that means even with regards to any potential romances, with Helen, Dana Sue and Maddie having a lot of major choices to make in Season 2:

Well, that all makes me very nervous for a certain set of eligible bachelors who live and work in Serenity, South Carolina. But, I have faith that our ladies will be able to use their heads and their instincts to come up with personal and romantic answers that will, at the very least, be intriguing to watch!

If you're anything like me, it will seem a lot like Sweet Magnolias Season 1 debuted on Netflix at least a year ago. But, the fact is, it was only back in mid-May that the new romance-focused series premiered on the streamer and took all of our quarantines by storm. It felt like an interminable wait just to see whether or not Season 2 would be approved by Netflix, but now we are nearing five months since even that announcement, meaning that fans really want to know when new episodes will be available. Now, Sweet Magnolias' showrunner has an update on when Season 2 will be ready.

Sweet Magnolias helped a lot of us get through the late spring / early summer time as we were stuck at home. The small town romantic drama, which is based on author Sherryl Woods 11-book series, gave us a lot of soapy interactions, swoon-worthy relationships, familial strife and a lot of best-bud bonding to help tide us over. So, when will the show be back for Season 2 on Netflix? Here's what showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson told Parade when asked about whether or not filming has begun on the new installment:

Awww, man! Alright, I know that the news that Sweet Magnolias isn't yet filming for Season 2 isn't great, but we all know what's most important right now, and that's making sure that the entire cast and crew can get to work in as safe of an environment as possible. As Sheryl J. Anderson said, she and her team are trying to get back on set as fast as possible, but they have a lot of details to work out yet on how to do that in the best way.

I'm sure that whenever the new season gets here, we'll still need it to "engage, delight and comfort" us in whatever order it delivers those things to us.

The first season of Sweet Magnolias left viewers with several cliffhangers and romances up in the air, including one accident that could lead to some major changes when Season 2 rolls around. By the time the finale ended, we'd been given a breakup, a character who'd left town suddenly, a potential love triangle, big trouble for a couple of characters, and the promise of a whole new romance, so there will be a number of plots to dig into and (hopefully) clear up in one way or another as the new season unfolds.

As anyone who's ever loved a TV show will know, while waiting for a new season to start can be difficult, there's nothing quite like falling in love with a show and having to wait for weeks or months to see if said show will even get another season. Fans of the Netflix hit Sweet Magnolias have been embroiled in just such a wait since the small town romantic drama debuted on May 19. Now, the show has finally gotten the greenlight for Season 2, and viewers are rejoicing right along with JoAnna Garcia Swisher and several of the other stars of the series.

Fan have been harboring a lot of hopes for Season 2 of Sweet Magnolias, and not just because they found the show (which follows lifelong friends Maddie (Garcia Swisher), Helen (Heather Headley) and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) as they juggle their careers, families and love lives in the small town of Serenity, South Carolina) thoroughly enjoyable to watch. The series ended Season 1 on some major cliffhangers, and it would seem that JoAnna Garcia Swisher was so excited at the renewal that all she could do was retweet the news:

Yes, JoAnna, this is certainly a very good reason to celebrate! And, there's nothing wrong with being so overjoyed at some good news that all you can do is throw up some emojis as a sign that you see a reason to party. Garcia Swisher also retweeted the renewal info with a spray of heart emojis, so it's clear that she's really feeling good about getting to return as Maddie. Which makes plenty of sense, because, along with her character being very invested in the outcome of a certain car accident, Garcia Swisher also has her own hopes for Season 2, and some desire to clear up a little love triangle controversy.

Another character who was left worrying about who was injured in that car accident was Brooke Elliott's Dana Sue, and the actress also took to Twitter to respond to Sweet Magnolias now being graced with a Season 2 renewal:

I bet she is excited! While Dana Sue had to deal with some pretty serious health and financial issues by the time Season 1 wrapped, she also (finally) had some good news in her life. And, when I say "good news" I mean two hot men were after the single mom, with one being her ex-husband, Ronnie, and the other being a strapping young farmer named Jeremy. Good on you, Dana Sue!

Meanwhile, we can't forget serious-minded lawyer Helen. Heather Headley's character spent most of the season falling back into a relationship with her many-times-over ex, Ryan, even though it's been clear to everyone but them for decades that they simply aren't meant to be. Headley also posted to Twitter about Sweet Magnolias coming back, and her words will make fans glad that they supported the show:

It's obvious that everyone involved in Sweet Magnolias is emotional about the series, which does turn up the heat a bit compared to Hallmark romances, getting a second season. And, Brandon Quinn, who plays Ronnie, was so excited that it led to a teensy little typo when he tweeted out his thanks the first time around:

We've all posted to social media so quickly that we messed up some details, whether large or small, so I think we can all forgive Quinn for making such a small mistake when such big news was on his mind. All that really matters is that Sweet Magnolias will be coming back to Netflix for Season 2, so now we've all got some televised goodness to look forward to!

Sweet Magnolias took the country by storm when it debuted on Netflix last month. OK, fine...maybe "took the country by storm" is overstating things a bit, but the romantic drama series, starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Heather Headley and Brooke Elliott, was in the Top 10 for several days after hitting the streamer, and fans can't stop talking about the big cliffhangers they were left with in the Season 1 finale. So, why has the show struck such a chord with audiences? Garcia Swisher believes she has the answer.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher recently spoke to People about Sweet Magnolias, and when asked why she thinks the show, which is based on the 11-book novel series of the same name by Sherryl Woods, has managed to resonate with so many people, she revealed that she believes it has a lot to do with the thorough characterizations fans were treated to. Here's what she had to say:

As someone who devoured Sweet Magnolias within a couple of days of it being released on Netflix, I think that JoAnna Garcia Swisher makes a really good point about her show. While it is a sorta soapy drama, Sweet Magnolias is also filled with characters who are going through (or have gone through) situations that a lot of people have dealt with in real life.

Garcia Swisher's Maddie, for instance, married her high school sweetheart, but is dealing with a divorce and the town gossip over it because of her ex-husband cheating on her with the nurse who works at his medical practice, who is now pregnant. Maddie is also now adjusting to reentering the workforce while taking care of her three children during the breakup of her marriage, and slowly getting back into dating. That might sound like way too much for one person to deal with at once, but you can bet that many women have been in Maddie's filled-to-bursting shoes at some point in their lives.

On top of that, Maddie's friends Helen (Headley) and Dana Sue (Elliott) are dealing with things like health scares, money woes, bad employees, and a couple of men who are absolutely no good for them, so there are plenty of real life situations to go around when people tune in to the show.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher also noted that Sweet Magnolias has found a way to deliver all that soapy goodness to fans, without making the experience seem like a chore:

I can also co-sign this theory from Garcia Swisher, and say that the show likely manages to keep viewers hooked with just the right combination of drama, humor and hope.

It was enough of a hit that it only took a couple of weeks for talks to start generating about what could happen in a second season. That said, star JoAnna Garcia Swisher has revealed that she was actually conflicted about Sweet Magnolias hitting Netflix when it did.

JoAnne Garcia Swisher chatted with The MOMS about Sweet Magnolias, and she shared why she was conflicted about the show's release:

The first season of Sweet Magnolias released on Tuesday, May 19, which happened to be at a very serious time in the real world thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only were people all over the world dealing with the pandemic, but the television and film industries were more or less shut down. JoAnna Garcia Swisher's show is a romantic series about friendship and families; the prospect of hyping it at a time when many people were isolated from their friends, family, and loved ones evidently didn't feel great to the actress.

That said, with so many people isolating and new options on broadcast television running out, streaming services were the place to be for new content at home. Even though Sweet Magnolias definitely didn't reflect the state of the world when it released in May, it did provide some escapism! JoAnna Garcia Swisher (who already revealed the storyline she wants to explore in Season 2) shared why it turns out that Sweet Magnolias was a good fit to release during the pandemic, despite her initial conflict:

Between the pandemic that changed daily life for people all over the world and the Black Lives Matter movement, the themes of Sweet Magnolias are "uplifting," according to JoAnna Garcia Swisher. Set in South Carolina, the show follows three best friends as they face struggles in romance, family, and careers.

Despite the thematic appeal of the show in uncertain times, JoAnna Garcia Swisher shared how she settled on the right way to talk about the show. As it turns out, promoting the show by revealing how it impacts her personally did the trick, as she said:

Netflix has been the home of a variety of hit shows in the age of social distancing, ranging for the wild docu-series Tiger King to Steve Carrell's Space Force (which has a decent chance of scoring a second season) to the romance of Sweet Magnolias. JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who plays the recently divorced Maddie Townsend on Sweet Magnolias, shares the spotlight with Heather Headley as accomplished attorney Helen Decatur, and Brooke Elliott as chef and restaurant owner Dana Sue Sullivan.

You can check out Sweet Magnolias now, with all ten episodes of the first season available streaming on Netflix now. A second season has not been confirmed at this point, although Sherryl Woods' book series still has plenty of source material that can be covered. It's also worth noting that even if Sweet Magnolias does score a Season 2 order sooner rather than later, filming presumably wouldn't be able to pick up any time too soon, as productions in film and television are still largely stopped.

Sweet Magnolias left fans with a lot of questions at the end of Season 1, and with that, those fans are hoping that the romantic drama gets a second season from Netflix to at least help tie up those many loose ends. The series details the romantic, career and family ups and downs of three life-long female friends in the fictional small town of Serenity, South Carolina, and while audiences might be clamoring for resolutions to certain potentially life and death plot points, star JoAnna Garcia Swisher is hoping to be able to dig into something a bit different for Season 2.

When we meet JoAnna Garcia Swisher's Maddie Townsend at the beginning of the show, she's in the middle of a much-gossiped about divorce from her high school sweetheart husband of many years, Bill. Ol' Bill decided to have an affair with the nurse who works for his medical practice, Noreen, and left Maddie and their three children (Ty, Kyle and Katie) to become engaged to Noreen. As if that isn't bad enough, Bill and Noreen are also expecting a baby, which makes the breakup even more difficult for Maddie.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher recently spoke with Good Housekeeping about the series and what she'd like to see happen, should Sweet Magnolias get the go-ahead for Season 2. As you might expect, she really wants to be able to dig deeper into a storyline that has potential to create some great drama: Maddie's relationship with Noreen.

One of the wonderful things about Sweet Magnolias is that the show doesn't take the easy way out and portray Noreen as a wicked homewrecker who had her sights set on Bill whether or not it would help destroy a long-standing marriage and family. It's pretty clear that Noreen has gotten in way over her head with Bill, but now that she's pregnant, is trying very hard to make the best of a terrible situation.

For instance, we see Noreen repeatedly try to be supportive of Bill and Maddie's kids, and she attempts to bond with them on many occasions. While Ty can basically take her or leave her, and youngest child Katie seems basically fine with getting to know her, Kyle is the only one of the three who actually goes out of his way to try and reciprocate Noreen's efforts. He can often be found striking up a conversation with Noreen without any prompting from her or his father, and even confides in her when he realizes he has a serious crush on a girl who has been his friend since they were much younger kids.

By the time Season 1 wraps up, Noreen has left Bill (And, good for her. That dude is the worst.) and Serenity behind because she realizes she's not really happy with their relationship or the way he treats her. On top of that, Maddie has little clue about how much Kyle and Noreen have bonded, and he has much bigger things to worry about than losing a friend in his almost-step-mother.

With Kyle's new issues, I can absolutely see Noreen hearing about what's happened and coming back around to support him, which would lead to some ample opportunities for she and Maddie to talk. This would be especially good, because we already saw in Season 1 that Maddie was very willing to treat Noreen with respect, even when she must have been furious with the much younger woman. Finding out how much of a comfort she was to Kyle would likely bring about some mixed feeling for Maddie.

Hopefully, Netflix will take into account that Sweet Magnolias spent several days in its Top 10 after being released on May 19, and give the people what they want by ordering Season 2. There would seem to be very few people who fired up Netflix on May 19, saw that Sweet Magnolias was available for viewing, tried the first season of the romantic drama, and then decided that they actually didn't like it. The hit show, which is based on the series of novels of the same name by Sherryl Woods, follows the career, family and romantic ups and downs of three life-long friends in the fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina. But, while that may sound a lot like something that fans of Hallmark's infamously sweet romance movies can get behind, it turns out that star Justin Bruening doesn't quite agree.

While we see quite a few career and family triumphs and tribulations for Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue over the course of Sweet Magnolias 10-episode first season, the main focus is usually on the love lives of the best bud trio. The show is pretty close as you can get to full-family entertainment when it comes to something that deals with adult ladies having romances, but Justin Bruening, who plays Maddie's eventual boyfriend Cal, does take some exception to people comparing the show to Hallmark romances.

After being asked by Entertainment Weekly if fans could expect a shirtless scene from him, Bruening dropped the details on when said scene happens, and then went on to explain why he doesn't think Sweet Magnolias is that much like a Hallmark movie:

Well, I have to admit that while I, myself, have sometimes compared Sweet Magnolias to Hallmark movies in the weeks since I binged the series, Justin Bruening makes a very good point about Episode 8. After his Cal spends a few episodes trying to woo the still-reeling-from-a-bad-divorce Maddie, he manages to convince her to give him a shot. By Episode 8, they've been dating for a little bit and Maddie feels comfortable enough to accept a date at Cal's home, so he can cook for her, and, well, you know what they say darlin': not all of the heat on that date was in the kitchen!

Anyone who's watched a Hallmark movie, whether it be Christmas or otherwise seasonally themed, or of the murder variety, will know that absolutely no one gets it on in those things. While we may, very well, get the occasional shot of the male lead in a state of semi-undress which shows off his manly chesticles, that is always as far as it goes. Hell, people in those movies don't even usually kiss until the very last minute of the whole thing, so you know there's no bow-chicka-wow-wow happening in any corner of those relationships.

As a very important side note: I've watched all of Sweet Magnolias, and some parts of it twice so I could write about in recent weeks, and at no point do I remember anyone on the show calling Cal "Mr. Unicorn man-candy." Either I wiped that from my memory because it was too much to bear, or Justin Bruening's wife knows something we don't. (Hint: she probably does.)

At any rate, as Bruening said, he has Hallmark movies like Last Vermont Christmas and The Thanksgiving House under his belt, so he remembers how completely sexy-time free those films are.

Sweet Magnolias has turned the TV-watching lives of many Netflix fans upside down since the show debuted back in May. Not only were viewers given another romantic drama to focus their amorously aware attentions on, but the series had the absolute nerve to end on several cliffhangers, both large and small. Fans are, of course, clamoring for a Season 2 renewal, but until we get word on that, they're also being quite vocal about how they believe these cliffhangers might turn out. And, it's one of those potential finale resolutions that has "really surprised" star JoAnna Garcia Swisher.

As the many Sweet Magnolias fans will know, JoAnna Garcia Swisher's Maddie is newly divorced from her husband, Bill, when the series starts. But, she begins to get back to a place where she can trust the menfolk again after she's pursued by, and then starts to date, Cal, her son's new high school baseball coach. By the time Season 1 wraps, though, Bill has decided that it's a good time to ask Maddie to take him back, and, apparently, it's this moment that has caused some consternation for Garcia Swisher. As she told Good Housekeeping:

Oh, my. I have to agree with JoAnna on this one. Really, I am truly stunned that any fan who claims to like Maddie and want the best for her as she navigates her new life as a single mother of three children, and gets used to being a business owner, would want her to take Bill back. I mean, Garcia Swisher was right in saying that he's got a looooong way to go before any such thing could even be slightly taken into consideration by Maddie. Or, as I like to think of it when contemplating this idea: ICK.

You guys? Bill and Maddie didn't just have some irreconcilable differences that led to a divorce after being high school sweethearts who went on to get and stay married for a long time. Oh, no. Did you all forget the part where Bill cheated on Maddie with the (much younger) nurse who works for him, Noreen, knocked her up and then left Maddie and their kids to start a new life with his former mistress? You did forget? It's OK. May was a super long time ago.

While Maddie did, indeed, have an epic falling out with Cal by the time the finale came to a close, that doesn't mean she should just fall back into a relationship with Bill. Not only did that man cheat and do all of that other stuff I mentioned above, but he only tried to get Maddie back after Noreen realized that he was King of the Douche Canoes, and was so desperate to get away from his ass that she left him while still pregnant with their baby. The girl literally left town to put him in her rear view mirror. Yikes.

But, it's all fine now, right? Now that you've been reminded of just how sub-par Bill was, you'll never consider him a serious choice for Maddie again...right?
