So often, especially recently, comic book movies have become dour and self-serious affairs. While superhero stories that are more grim than humorous are certainly not unusual in comics, there's a pervasive feeling that to be taken seriously, comic book movies must therefore be serious. It's an understandable point of view, but the truth is that these stories come from comic books after all, so there's nothing wrong with letting them actually be funny. James Gunn's The Suicide Squad looks to be hilarious, but it's far from the only funny superhero movie out there.

In truth, most superhero movies do have some humor in them, so they're rarely entirely straight. But there have been some absolutely great superhero movies that are actually incredibly funny, with humor being important to the story they are telling. They do this while still also being just as exciting and full of impressive action as any other superhero movie. Here are six of the best examples of truly funny comic book movies.

Deadpool 2

What is there to even say about the Deadpool movies? They're hilarious. That's sort of the whole point. Deadpool is the guy who knows he's in a comic book and he has a lot of fun with that in the pages of the book. The same is true on the big screen. It's still sort of amazing that considering how close we came to not getting these movies at all, we somehow got two, and they keep promising us more.

We're putting Deadpool 2 on the list here rather than the first one because, well, it's just bigger in every conceivable way than the first movie, and that includes the laughs. What other movie would even try to put together its own superhero team, promote the hell out of them before the film's release and then just kill them all for the gag?

Shazam!

Shazam is one of the truly classic superhero characters who goes back to 1940. He's right there with Superman in the early days of superhero comics. But the core conceit of the character, that the incredible hero was actually a small boy with magic powers who transformed into the adult hero, was always going to be the sort of idea that would require extra suspension of disbelief. This was all the more true considering the movie character was supposed to exist in the same DC universe as Henry Cavill's Superman and Ben Affleck's Batman. And somehow... it all works.

Zachary Levi is quite possibly the perfect actor to play a kid who gets to become a superhero; the joy and the fun is palpable. When it's time for Shazam! to get serious, it can. But in the end, the main character, even when he's a man, is still a kid, and that's an inherently funny premise that the movie embraces rather than runs away from.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Before James Gunn was given control of The Suicide Squad, he scored directorial duties over another group of comic book misfits: Marvels' Guardians of the Galaxy. The characters were far from the most popular in the Marvel Comics realm, even among regular readers at the time, which made their inclusion in the MCU slightly odd to begin with. But then, it turned out "slightly odd" was sort of the point.

From the moment the title came on the screen and we saw Chris Pratt's Star-Lord singing along and dancing to a 1970s pop soundtrack, we knew we were in for something different, and something quite a bit funnier than the rest of the MCU. The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie came out just a few months after Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so the tonal shift could give you whiplash. Still, it all felt right, and the fact that a sequel would come and a third movie is on the way shows how well it all works.

Ant-Man

Most superhero stories are about people who either choose to become heroes or who find themselves struck by fate and forced into the gig. Ant-Man gave us a story about a guy who was sort of bullied into the job and really wasn't sure if that was something he wanted to do. As such, Ant-Man is very much a comedy of errors, as Scott Lang has to learn how to use his suit and his powers, learn how to fight and learn how to do basically everything, except how to break into places. He's already pretty good at that.

Much like Shazam!, there's something inherent in the Ant-Man premise, i.e. following a guy who can shrink, that can look a little silly when compared to the big hitters of the MCU. Rather than try to push hard against that, Ant-Man just lets itself be fun and funny. From that point, Ant-Man lets his actions speak for him, showing that he can stand alongside the rest of the Avengers.

The LEGO Batman Movie

While the movies on this list so far are certainly really funny, they are also still superhero movies first and comedies second. That may not be considered the case with The LEGO Batman Movie. Yes, its main character is Batman. Yes, he fights super villains and has all the other elements of a traditional Batman movie, but the whole is being told with LEGO, and that's hard to overlook.

The LEGO Batman Movie has a lot of fun at the expense of the "grim dark" superhero genre, which Batman has always been part of, but that's key in what makes the whole thing so funny. The jokes come basically nonstop in this movie, so if one of them doesn't land, there's no need to worry because another will be along in a second. But it all still has batman fighting The Joker, which is what all comic book movie fans came to see.

Teen Titans Go! to the Movies

While Deadpool 2 might find much of its comedy in breaking the fourth wall, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies kicks down the fourth wall, stomps on it for a minute and then lights it on fire. It's a superhero movie about superhero movies, and also about the business of superhero movies. Oh, and it's a heroic superhero movie. While not nearly as many people actually saw this one as they did most of the others on this list, that's probably something that should be remedied. It's full of incredible superheroes and great jokes, and it's probably the only time Nicolas Cage will actually get to play Superman.

A serious tone can add weight and gravity to a movie and that can be a benefit for many superhero movies. However, there's nothing wrong with having a laugh, and being funny doesn't mean that your action can't be exciting or your plot can't have end of the world-level stakes. With several serious looking superhero movies on the way, like Black Widow, there's a place for something like The Suicide Squad, which will hopefully make us laugh as loud as it makes us cheer.

So your kids have watched Trolls World Tour a million, bajillion times now, and if you hear “Tiny Diamond” one more time you’re going to throw your TV right out the window. Well, I have some good news for you and your TV set then, because there is a lot of other great stuff streaming on sites like Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu right now that your kids are sure to love (and will get them to stop watching the Trolls sequel... at least for a little while).

Now, I’m going to try to avoid the obvious choices like Frozen 2, which I’m sure your kids probably just got done watching before they moved onto Trolls World Tour (if they’re anything like my kids, anyway). And if you’re also looking for some great TV shows for kids on Netflix, I have that covered, too. But if it’s just movies you’re looking for, then this is the list for you.

UglyDolls

Your kids already like strange looking creatures that sing based off of an already existing toy line, so UglyDolls is the next natural progression for them. It’s about a world where dolls are chosen for kids, but the “ugly” dolls get dropped off in a town called Uglyville. The main doll, Moxy (voiced by Kelly Clarkson) desires to be chosen by a child and be accepted. Kelly Clarkson arguably has better pipes than Anna Kendrick, who voices Queen Poppy in Trolls: World Tour, but the songs aren’t nearly as memorable in this movie.

That said, there is a good message in here about how being different is beautiful in its own way, and the plot is actually easier to follow than in Trolls World Tour. Honestly, you probably won’t personally enjoy it as a parent, but your kids will likely love all the colors and songs.

Abominable

Abominable is not a musical, so you can get that out of the way, but it does involve music: the protagonist, Yi, voiced by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s, Chloe Bennet, is a violinist – so it has that going for it. It also has a diverse cast, which is refreshing to see.

The story is about a young girl who finds a yeti (or the abominable snowman) on the roof of her apartment, only to learn that the creature just wants to go home to its family. But there’s a rich dude who wants to capture it, and so Yi must go on an adventure with her two friends to bring the creature to Mount Everest. There’s magic involved, and some really beautiful visuals that will captivate your child in much the same way as Trolls World Tour.

Moana

As I said earlier, I’m not going to do an obvious choice like Frozen 2, but I will talk up Moana all day. And while you’ve likely already seen it, why not watch it again? You might have already forgotten how good it is.

The story concerns a teenager named Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) who just wants to sail the sea since she feels called to it. Her father, who is the village chief, forbids it. Because of certain circumstances, Moana disobeys her father and finds a demigod named Maui (voiced by Dwayne Johnson). They go on an adventure together to end a terrible curse. The music is exceptional in this film, and the story never gets old. So, yeah, watch it again. You’re welcome.

Sherlock Gnomes

Depending on how old your kids are, you probably never saw Gnomio and Juliet, which is the preceding film to Sherlock Gnomes. But you really don’t have to see that movie to understand this film’s plot. It’s about garden ornaments that go missing, and Gnomeo (voiced by James McAvoy) and Juliet (voiced by Emily Blunt) hire Sherlock Gnomes (voiced by Johnny Depp) to find out why.

The film is fine, and the story is zippy enough, but the one aspect that Sherlock Gnomes might have over Trolls World Tour is the music, since many of the songs are from Elton John’s back catalogue. So if you love Elton John (And who doesn’t?), then you’ll at least dig the soundtrack while your kids enjoy the story.

Leap!

If your kids like big musical numbers, then they also likely enjoy dancing, which makes Leap! a perfect choice for them. It’s about an orphan named Felicie (voiced by Elle Fanning) who desires to be a ballerina and actually gets her wish when she’s mistaken for somebody else and becomes a student at a famous ballet house in Paris. And while there isn’t any singing, there are dance routines set to popular music, so your kids will probably dig that.

Plus, the story takes place in the 1880s, so it can almost be a history lesson (the Statue of Liberty is being constructed toward the end of the movie) if you feel like doing the research.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies

One thing I love about the Trolls movies is that they’re often irreverent and silly, with some jokes going right over kids’ heads. And that’s why I think Teen Titans GO! to the Movies might actually be the only movie on this list that you’ll probably like more than your kids. That’s not to say that your kids won’t also find it funny, since it sometimes has a Spongebob quality to it, but some of the jokes and the songs (and they’re such great songs) will probably make you laugh a lot more than your little ones.

Like Lego Batman, the film is self-referential, with the plot even getting kickstarted because the members of the Justice League criticize the Teen Titans since they don’t even have their own movie, which leads them to want to want their very own blockbuster. Please, just watch this movie. You won't regret it.

Tangled

Tangled often gets forgotten since it’s B.F. (Before Frozen), but that shouldn’t hold it back because Tangled is arguably a more interesting film. It’s about Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore), who is trapped in a tower, but then, because of outside circumstances, leaves the tower and goes on an adventure with a handsome thief named Flynn Rider (voiced by Zachary Levi).

Like Moana, the music in Tangled is exceptional, and you and your kids will enjoy all the many twists and turns in the movie. And your kids must like twists and turns since Trolls World Tour is kind of all over the place, amirite?

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

The Hotel Transylvania series has always been silly. Taking classic monsters like Dracula, the Wolfman, and Frankenstein’s monster and defanging them has pretty much been its entire conceit. And while there is no singing in these films, the interesting characters are sure to glue fans of Trolls to the screen.

The third movie takes place on a cruise ship as Dracula needs to unwind from his duties, only to learn that the ship is being piloted by the Van Helsing family, which famously hunts monsters. And even though there isn’t any singing in this movie, the end of the flick has a pretty boss techno number, similar to the intro of Trolls World Tour.

The Secret Life Of Pets 2

Similar to Hotel Transylvania, The Secret Life of Pets series doesn’t use music to tell its stories. But the characters are colorful and memorable, just like the cast of Trolls.

The sequel concerns the Jack Russell Terrier Max (voiced by Patton Oswalt) and his now-buddy Duke (voiced by Eric Stonestreet) going to a farm where they encounter an alpha dog named Rooster (voiced by the always gravely Harrison Ford). But unlike the first movie, the story of this one is disjointed and broken up into two separate stories that converge in the end with Snowball the rabbit (Kevin Hart) and Gidget the Pomeranian (Jenny Slate) having their own adventure. It’s a fun time, and one fans of Trolls will love.

Trolls Holiday

Ffinally, if your kids just can’t get enough of Trolls, then there’s always the half hour Christmas special, Trolls Holiday. Queen Poppy (Anna Kendrick) wants to bring joy to her best friend, Bridget the Bergen (voiced by Zooey Deschanel), and she plans to do it by introducing the Bergens to their massive amount of troll holidays, since the Bergens don’t have any holidays. Antics ensue.

It’s your typical Troll fare, but your kids will of course love it because… well, Trolls.

Those are the picks. I also could have included movies like The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and The Angry Birds Movie 2, but I figured that 10 were enough picks to get your kids to pull themselves away from Troll World Tour. If anything, at least these ten picks can give you a break for a little while.

With just a couple weeks left in August, the summer movie season is pretty much over. All of the massive tentpoles have dropped, and to varying effects, they've either sank or swam in their financial fates. However, that doesn't mean we can't evaluate them on artistic merit. In fact, now's the perfect time to cull the wheat from the chaff in terms of what went into theaters during the summer of 2018. And in our efforts, we ran through our memories, fond or otherwise, of the 18 big ticket players of this past season and ranked them according to the criteria we set out above. Don't pack away the sunscreen just yet, as it's time to run through who won and lost in summer 2018.

18. Mile 22

Every list has to have a loser, and this summer just happened to give us an easy out when it came to who would land in last, all at the expense of Mile 22. While the normally effective team of Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg can usually be depended on to land a solid portrait of heroism, their efforts to go to the extremes that only a Cannon film could know and love were a total mess. While the sequel went into development shortly before this opened in theaters, let's just hope it's a threat as hollow as this movie's story.

17. The Meg

It's not hard to make a shark movie into a masterpiece of dumb fun. At least, that's what we thought before The Meg went to theaters. Seeing Jason Statham and his cast of clumsy shark bait stack up against a really well-aged Megalodon was something that looked like it'd be the party of the summer. Instead, it took itself too seriously, handicapped itself by aiming for a PG-13 action movie rather than an R-rated shark hunt, and left critics and audiences divided. Oh man, what could have been.

16. The Darkest Minds

The YA franchise machine needs to die, and The Darkest Minds is the latest proof of this. With a dull product that couldn't even provide a decent trailer, this latest stab at turning a young adult series with at least three books into an instant money-maker has failed. There's plenty of YA books out there that'd make fantastic films, and this isn't a message to stop appealing to this audience. Rather, it's a plea to studios to stop automatically adapting a series that could, if done right, make for more movies. Let these darkened minds be your best, and final, example why.

15. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again

Sequels to non-franchised properties are really, REALLY hard to make, especially if you're trying to do them right. But if there's any harder benchmark to succeed with in Hollywood, it's now the sequel to a jukebox musical. After Mamma Mia! used up all of the best ABBA songs, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again decided to not only re-use some of them, but to also bring in some of the second tier songs that are harder to shoe-horn into a musical dramedy. Throw in some Godfather Part II prequelizing that is derailed by bad editing, and you've somehow got a financially viable film -- just not a very good one.

14. Skyscraper

Dwayne Johnson used to go by the name of The Rock, which is interesting, considering his latest film Skyscraper had the weight of just an object at the box office. A Die Hard clone with Johnson being his usual charming/kick-ass self should have been a soft sell, especially as it showed off beautiful Hong Kong as its setting. Yet again, we see a story of a film that's not fun enough to enjoy, and not solid enough to take seriously. However, at the very least, it's still easy to love Dwayne Johnson, even in something like this.

13. The Equalizer 2

You'd figure that the reason The Equalizer 2 brought Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua to their first sequels is because the film had something special in mind to attract them. Apparently, that wasn't the case at all, as it was a "more of the same" sequel that the audience ended up getting. If you're ok with just sitting down to a repeat, that's fine. But much like pure comedies, pure action flicks need to amp it up just that extra mile in order to be interesting. If there's ever an Equalizer 3, maybe they'll remember that lesson in the script phase.

12. Ocean's 8

We're starting to climb out of the depths of summer 2018's offerings and head into the light thrills that we got to experience throughout these dog days. And what better way to sum up Ocean's 8 than "light thrills," as the film wasn't exactly the bat crack that the original Ocean's Trilogy was. That said, it was certainly a refreshing movie, and if Sandra Bullock and her crew are having fun, it's hard not to smile and have some of that fun yourself. It may not have struck it rich, but this one could make a killing on home video if the crowd is loud enough.

11. Teen Titans Go! To The Movies

This summer was another one of those years where the animated market seemed a bit barren. While that's kind of a bad thing, it's also a good thing when you take into account how easily Teen Titans Go! To The Movies might have gotten in the shuffle. Despite the story needing some more focus, this was actually a pretty fun movie that showed DC Comics being able to not only poke jokes at the competition, but also itself, in equal measure. If Stan Lee can make a cameo poking fun at his ability to make cameos in the MCU, it's clearly a film worth mentioning.

10. Tag

If Tag were an ice cream, it's be Neapolitan, solely because it doesn't know what type of movie it wants to be and tries its hand at everything it thinks it can get away with. It hurts the film, particularly in the last act's big reveal, but this interesting hybrid of a biopic and a blockbuster comedy still lands some solid laughs throughout its ensemble. In particular, Jeremy Renner's psychotic champion who'll do anything to win really makes his absence from Avengers: Infinity War and Mission: Impossible - Fallout kinda worth it. Certain sections of this movie purr when it comes to the comedy, making the film's faults non-fatal, but still annoying.

9. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

Are you sitting down? Good, because the following statement might make you a bit unbalanced: Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is a solid Adam Sandler movie. In fact, it's probably the best of the trilogy. Somehow, the family friendly humor mixed just right with the pop culture references, and the Drac Pack delivered a pretty funny comedy everyone could enjoy. It's both funny and sweet, with a healthy dose of sight gags that actually made the 3D worth it for a change. Not to mention, you may never get bigger laughs out of a Bruno Mars themed gag than you will out of Hotel Transylvania 3, and we're well into the woods in that respect.

8. Solo: A Star Wars Story

Could Solo: A Star Wars Story have been better? Yes, definitely. The tonal mish-mash of the film turned what could have been a solid hit into a bit of a messy film. But did it deliver the escapism that one would expect from a Star Wars film? Indeed it did, as the film that folks deemed to be a total mess before release managed to be a fun and exciting adventure, reminiscent of Ron Howard's earlier films. It's a shame they didn't hire him in the first place, as one can only imagine what he could have done with a more consistent product.

7. Ant-Man and The Wasp

Marvel Studios bummed the entire universe out with the juggernaut that was Avengers: Infinity War... and then it decided they were still going to release another film after that! It's a good thing too, because despite how it fits into the chronology of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's timeline, Ant-Man and The Wasp is the super-powered comedy romp everyone could have used to snap to their senses. Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lily are one of the most effective teams in the MCU, and with a bench of fun characters that runs straight into the Quantum Realm, Peyton Reed's sequel becomes a prime example of what a summer movie should be.

6. Disney's Christopher Robin

Now we start running into the heaviest of hitters this summer, and oh bother, does Disney's Christopher Robin hit with a honey-coated fist of emotion. Bringing the silly old bear and his Hundred Acre Wood friends back to the big screen, this movie also gives us one of the most spirited Ewan McGregor performances in some time. Once his titular character finds his inner child, it's hard to shake just how fun he is to watch, though this film also includes the right amount of drama to make that transformation truly earned. More of this please, Disney.

5. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

It's been said before and it needs to be said again: hiring J.A. Bayona as the director of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is the best idea in the history of fantastic ideas in this new Jurassic World run of dino panic. What starts as a standard island adventure soon shifts into a gothic horror film with prehistoric creatures running left and right, central among them all the infamous Indoraptor. And all the while, Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and their posse of prehistoric preservation pals make this journey a human endeavour as well. What the hell are they going to do for Jurassic World 3?!

4. Deadpool 2

A note to the person or persons/government entity that leaked the test footage for the original Deadpool: show yourself and collect your royalties. As if the first film wasn't fun enough, this year's Deadpool 2 upped the action and the laughs to such a height that, to Wade Wilson's point, this probably killed any chance of Deadpool 3 being any good. Still, it is going to give us an X-Force movie, and if we've learned anything from the Deadpool series, it's that it performs its best under pressure, in high heels and set to Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time." Bravo, Mr. Wilson. Bra-fucking-vo.

3. Mission: Impossible - Fallout

Much like Tom Cruise and his seemingly ageless visage, Mission: Impossible - Fallout is the latest proof that the franchise it's continuing hasn't lost a step in its current run. It's been a hell of a run since Mission: Impossible 3 returned the series to form, and this Henry Cavill-enhanced entry broke an entire bathroom's worth of competitors on its way to the hearts of the audience members. Christopher McQuarrie has such tight action sequences in this film that you can feel it holding its breath out of tension, making for some of the most memorable stunts known to man. Yet again, the mission of top shelf excitement has been accomplished.

2. Avengers: Infinity War

10 years, numerous heroes and at the time 19 movies into Marvel Studios' three phase deep cinematic universe, Avengers: Infinity War decided to pack as many heroes as they could onto the big screen. Through whatever thematic and movie-making sorcery they had to use to do it, the Russo Brothers delivered the perfect "end" to an epoch in history that defined not only these movies have been, but also where they're going. Everyone gets their own character beats, so many loose ends get set up for the big tie-off and even the most mistreated Avengers get their "nailed it" moment. Above all, the film ends on the obvious cliffhanger, but does so in such a manner that you're still crying your eyes out.

1. Incredibles 2

Yes, there's actually a film that (subjectively) could topple Avengers: Infinity War, and it comes from similar circumstances. When The Incredibles deconstructed superhero dramedy and became the gold standard for Disney/Pixar films, everyone wanted a sequel. Writer/director Brad Bird said that he'd oblige provided there was a good enough idea in store for what we'd eventually come to know as Incredibles 2. Almost a full 14 years went by until we finally got that film, and much like its Marvel Studios counterpart, it was worth the wait and then some. Rather than steer into a subpar concept that'd leave the Parr family in an underwhelming adventure, Bird took his time and crafted a narrative that digs deeper into retro thrills, but is even timelier than one would have expected. If there's one film that kicked all of the asses this summer, and still left all involved wanting more, this is the one -- full stop.

You have probably never asked yourself who would win in a fight, Ethan Hunt or Winnie the Pooh - but for those of you who have had that strange idea, we now have a definitive answer. Going into the weekend it looked like there was going to be some stiff competition between Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Marc Forster's Christopher Robin, but now that the dust has settled the numbers have revealed a surprising gap. Check out the domestic totals for the two films and the rest of the Top 10 below, and join me after for analysis.

Last week estimates suggested that Christopher Robin would make somewhere in the vicinity of $30 million, and it turned out that it fell a hair below that mark. As a result, Mission: Impossible - Fallout was able to keep the box office crown for two weeks in a row (a feat that we haven't repeated a lot this summer). The massive blockbuster, which has earned some of the best reviews of the year, followed it's $61.2 million start (a new record for the franchise), with a fantastic $35 million in its second weekend. That means it only dropped 42.8 percent, which is a legitimately impressive.

The news only gets better when you look at the worldwide numbers. The $124.5 million that Mission: Impossible - Fallout has made to date domestically is actually less than 40 percent of the global total, which stands at $329.5 million. Admittedly the film was made with a heafty budget - partially because of huge stunt pieces, partially because of Tom Cruise's on-set injury that delayed production - but by the time the film finishes its theatrical run the folks at Paramount should be very happy with the results - particularly because we have a bit of a slow August ahead of us.

As for Christopher Robin, the box office performance very much matches the critical reaction: it's fine. The Disney movie has a mediocre 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, and, as mentioned, the box office totals are on the low end of expectations. Audiences are apparently really loving it, as CinemaScore is reporting an "A" grade, and like the case with Mission: Impossible - Fallout we'll have to wait and see the affect that the soft upcoming weeks will have. Family films will have a certain advantage thanks to the fact that parents will be looking for something to do with the kids, which puts Christopher Robin on the radar. There is, however, also some competition, such as Ken Marino's Dog Days, which is out on Friday.

The other new releases this week, Susanna Fogel's The Spy Who Dumped Me and Jennifer Yuh Nelson's The Darkest Minds, weren't exactly expected to make much of a splash, and they lived up to that very specific hype with debuts in the three and eight slots, respectively. Despite their very different genres, both films were made for around the same amount of money ($40 million and $34 million), and aren't starting off in great positions. The Spy Who Dumped Me obviously sits in a better position, and perhaps has a chance to make its money back, but Yuh Nelson's sci-fi adventure has a much longer road ahead of it.

The new titles shifted things pretty much as expected, though you may have noticed one notable drop. The animated Teen Titans Go! To The Movies didn't really have an auspicious start debuting in fifth place last weekend, but it's never great to fall from fifth to tenth. The blame can't really be put on falling numbers, as the $4.9 million is only down a modest 53.3 percent, but it's particularly unfortunate because audiences are responding positively and critics have given it great reviews.

We have a strange slate set up next week, with Jon Turteltaub's The Meg, Ken Marino's Dog Days, and Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman going toe-to-toe - and I'll be back here next Sunday to see how things shake out in the Top 10.

Warning: minor SPOILERS for Teen Titans Go! to the Movies are ahead!

Just like the Teen Titans Go! TV series, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies handles Robin, Stafire, Beast Boy, Raven and Cyborg's adventures with a more humorous hand than the original animated Teen Titans series did. As a result, along with the usual gags and shenanigans associated with these characters on their TV show, this movie also pokes fun at the superhero genre, particularly DC Comics. One example of this takes place halfway through Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, as Robin walks by Batman and Superman fighting each other. The Caped Crusader and Man of Steel briefly cease their battle when they discover that both their mothers are named Martha, only to resume trading blows upon learning that their fathers don't share the same name. It's a fun swipe at Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but according to co-director Aaron Horvath, Warner Bros did not care for the joke. Teen Titans Go! to the Movies' other director, Peter Rida Michail, added:

While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was overall a commercial success, it took a critical beating during its theatrical run (though the Ultimate Edition home release earned warmer reception), and one of the frequently teased elements has been Batman stopping short of killing Superman during their big fight after the Kryptonian asked the shadowy vigilante to "save Martha," a.k.a. Martha Kent. Whether you like that moment or not, it's been mocked numerous times in the years since Batman v Superman's release, and Teen Titans Go! to the Movies decided to get in on the action. Evidently Warner Bros wasn't keen on the Martha bit in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, but after it earned one of the biggest laughs at the test screenings, it was kept. As Horvath said to EW:

Just like the Deadpool movies have been doing in an R-rated setting, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is filled with fourth wall-breaking, from Green Lantern saying that people don't talk about his movie (for good reason) to the heroes thinking that Slade is actually Deadpool. Marvel legend Stan Lee even cameoed! Like almost everything about Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, the Martha bit was just a way to get a chuckle out of moviegoers, whether they're kids who haven't seen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or hardcore DC fans who are very familiar with the movie.

For years, DC has been known for the strength of its animation. From Batman: The Dark Knight Returns to Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, movies produced in the animated DC realm have encompassed wide ranges of genres and styles. The latest project on deck is Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, which features Nicolas Cage as the voice of Superman. Many fans have waited decades for a Nic Cage Superman performance, but Cage recently opened up about the project to admit that it's a very different take on the Man of Steel than what he would've done with Tim Burton back in the 1990s. The actor explained:

Right off the bat, it's interesting to note that Nic Cage's take on Superman in Teen Titans Go! To The Movies isn't all that reminiscent of the Superman that he would've played in Tim Burton's Superman Lives. The Raising Arizona star's ill-fated take on the Man of Steel has become iconic to geeks who know about that never-made film, and the prospect of him finally getting to voice Supes in an animated DC adventure seemed like a great way to bring that incarnation of the character to life. Nevertheless, this is a different take on Superman that Nicolas Cage enjoyed because it allowed him to tap into something more family friendly, which would let him watch Teen Titans Go! To The Movies with his son, who is actually named Kal-El after Superman and voices young Bruce Wayne in the film.

That makes a lot of sense in the grand scheme of things. Though we never actually saw Tim Burton's take on Superman (aside from leaked photos and behind-the-scenes tests that they did on suits), what we do know about the movie suggests that Superman Lives would've had a darker edge consistent with the style of the director. With Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, Cage got to take a more lighthearted approach to the Man of Tomorrow, and per his remarks to USA Today, it was fun to embrace something with a family-friendly tone.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is currently in theaters. Check it out to see the offbeat versions of these DC icons for yourself, and if you're waiting for something a bit more adult-oriented, then you can watch out for the DCEU's solo Aquaman movie later this year on December 21. As for Nic Cage, he's not done voicing superheroes yet, as he's also lined up to voice Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which will premiere on December 14.

The Mission: Impossible franchise has truly aged like a fine wine. Twenty-two years ago it launched and was instantly successful, but as the sequels have continued to come out the scale of the action has only gotten bigger, and so has the response. Now we have Mission: Impossible - Fallout, the second chapter in the series written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, and it turns out that its the most massive success yet, with a larger box office haul in its first three days than any previous chapter. Back in 2000, John Woo's Mission: Impossible II managed to make $57.8 million in its opening weekend, but now nearly two decades later the crown is changing heads. Mission: Impossible - Fallout has been riding on huge buzz for weeks, thanks in particular to an overwhelmingly positive critical response, and it has translated to some nice dividends for Paramount Pictures. In addition to sporting an awesome 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (another best in the franchise), the movie also has fans over-the-moon with the adventure, as it has earned an "A" on CinemaScore.

Impressively, Mission: Impossible - Fallout's domestic numbers are only half the story... and, in fact, it's actually less than half. The blockbuster has simultaneously had an amazing opening weekend around the world, and has already managed to pull in $92 million from foreign markets. That brings its global total up to an impressive $153.5 million already, and that's just the start. Given that August tends to be kind of a dead month, there is a very real likelihood that you will still see the film's name in the box office Top 10 when September rolls around.

The other big new release this weekend was the animated Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, though its performance was not exactly the success story that Mission: Impossible - Fallout was. It was fortunately able to still make eight figures - which had the effect of matching its reported budget - but it's hard to imagine Warner Bros. being over-the-moon with the turnout. After all, in both the superhero and animated realms this is the summer that has brought us Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Incredibles 2, and Ant-Man And The Wasp, and all of those did much better than just $10 million. The positive side of things is that critics dug it, and it got a "B+" CinemaScore, so it may be able to stick around for a while and make a bit of extra cash thanks to word of mouth.

Beyond the two new entries, there really weren't many surprises - with no big drops or surges to be found. Ol Parker's Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again managed to flip places with Antoine Fuqua's Equalizer 2 after opening ranked two and one, respectively, last week; and while J.A Bayona's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is approaching $400 million domestically, it wasn't able to quite get there this weekend (though it has become the third movie this year to make over $1 billion around the world).

Coming up we have our first August weekend, and it will deliver a trio of three very different films: Aneesh Chaganty's thriller Searching; Susanna Fogel's action-comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me; and Marc Forster's family-friendly Christopher Robin. It should lead to some interesting changes in the rankings, so join me next Sunday to see how the Top 10 shifts!

Nowadays, most superhero movies are geared primarily towards adults, whether they rest in the traditional PG-13 realm or go even more intense with an R rating. But every now and then, a superhero movie comes along that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Incredibles 2 fit that bill last month, and now Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is doing the same this weekend. Like the Teen Titans Go! TV series from Cartoon Network, this movie is a comical take on the DC Comics team that's been around since the 1960s, with the story revolving around Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven and Beast Boy trying to prove that they deserve their own movie by battling the diabolical Slade (better known as Deathstroke). The reviews are in, and overall, it sounds like Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is worth checking out.

Starting off, CinemaBlend's own Mike Reyes awarded Teen Titans Go! to the Movies three and a half out of five stars in his review, noting that while the movie suffers from some problems with storytelling, it's nonetheless is a fun, fourth wall-breaking watch that's more than merely child's entertainment.

Next, Sam Barsanti from The AV Club gave Teen Titans Go! to the Movies a B+ score, declaring that it's a movie that kids will most certainly enjoy, but is also targeted at longtime comic book fans who will catch the deep cut references.

The Wrap's Alonso Duralde, who was already a fan of superhero self-parody, admitted that Teen Titans Go! to the Movies is essentially Deadpool for kids, but if you're an adult who liked the Ryan Reynolds-led comedy, you might like this movie too.

Frank Scheck from The Hollywood Reporter said in his review that while Teen Titans Go! to the Movies' story is "only slightly less rudimentary than the Saturday morning TV-level animation, the movie is nonetheless a "welcome relief" from the somberness from other recent live action DC movies.

Finally, IGN's Laura Prudom handed Teen Titans Go! to the Movies an 8/10 score, complimenting the movie for its big supply of mockery and Easter eggs.

As anyone can tell you, the film market is flooded with superhero movies, and not all are created equal. Yet one particular area that the genre has yet to really flourish in is that of the animated realm. At least, that's true when it comes to theatrical efforts. So leave it to DC Comics, a studio that's had some problems in the live action arena, to deliver an animated film so irreverent, so hysterical, that it's a better Deadpool movie than Deadpool 2. While it still has its problems with building a totally engaging and coherent story, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is a blast and a half that you can share with your kids.

Tired of being laughed off as inferiors to their more notable super-powered counterparts, the Teen Titans (Tara Strong, Greg Cipes, Khary Payton, Hynden Walch, Scott Menville) decide that they need to convince Hollywood they're worthy of their own movie. To do that, they'll need to follow some key steps, among which is to find an arch nemesis. Getting more than they'd bargained for in the villainous Slade (Will Arnett), the Titans will have to watch their step, as their road to fame isn't all it's cracked up to be.

On the outset, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies looks like a movie that you'd probably write off as merely child's entertainment. This couldn't be further from the truth, as the young crime stoppers engage in humor that's reminiscent of the Animaniacs, as it knowingly winks towards the world of comic films as we know them. Between the on point cameos that are showcased throughout the film, including one pretty spectacular one by Stan Lee, and gags that border on "ask your parents" territory, there's a lot of laughs for kids and parents alike. But should you be a comic fan that doesn't have kids, and hasn't been one for a while, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is still a comfortable fit.

Unfortunately, while the humor is top notch, there's some slight hiccups when it comes to the storytelling involved in Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. While the source material works similarly plotted outings in a fraction of the time, the Titans' jump to the big screen isn't as strong as it could be. In fact, the plot is a bit of a mess, as it riffs on material that we've seen examined in Deadpool 2 and The Incredibles 2, but to a more episodic extent. Though if your kids are itching to see those Deadpool movies, but you're not ready to let them go that deep in the paint, you can take 'em to see Teen Titans Go! To The Movies with the same results.

When the film finally decides to lock into a trajectory that takes the film from the middle of its second act through to the finale, it really gets going. The audience is left with a mixed bag of results that still manages to bring some really entertaining light to the animation genre. It's not quite the leap that films like The LEGO Batman Movie have given the world of superhero animation, but it's definitely a much-needed laugh in the wake of this year's more downer-centric moments of comic entertainment. DC Comics has always been lightyears ahead of Marvel when it comes to animated thrills, and Teen Titans Go! To The Movies continues that tradition in spades.

If there's one thing you can expect from most movies containing Marvel characters, it's a cameo by Stan Lee. Throughout multiple franchises and studios, fans have seen Lee pop up to delightful results for well over a decade of movies. And while these cameos are commonplace, it now looks like Lee is going to jump ship and actually pop up in a DC flick. While he won't be underwater in Aquaman, the Marvel visionary reportedly has a small role the upcoming animated feature Teen Titans Go! To The Movies.

This news came out of San Deigo Comic-Con (via GameSpot), which actually screened Teen Titans Go! To The Movies in its entirety. That screening revealed a surprise role for Stan Lee, who has mostly done his acting through small roles within the MCU and X-Men franchises. Lee voices the role himself, poking fun at the comic creator's constant thirst for onscreen roles. And just like that, he departs the movie and the Teen Titans movie goes back to normal.

This is the second time in recent history that Stan Lee voiced himself, especially in a project outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He recently had a role in Big Hero 6, which is technically connected to Marvel comics. So while that wasn't a complete surprise, his cameo in a DC project is sure to puzzle those hardcore Marvel fans.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies overall seems like an extremely self-aware animated feature, which will examine nerd culture, fandom, and the comic book genre as a whole. With its trailers taking plenty of shots at the MCU and DCEU alike, it stands to reason that this might extend to the man himself, Mr. Stan Lee. Never missing a chance to get some screen time, Lee was happy to lend his voice to the upcoming animated feature.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies revolves around the titular team, which has had two animated series at this point. Desperate for the fandom and celebrity that heroes like Batman and Superman received from their big movie adaptation, the Titans travel to Hollywood and attempt to secure a movie of their own. This somehow puts them back in conflict with Slade, and will also contain plenty of references to the superhero genre.

Stan Lee's involvement in Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is a welcomed departure from the gloom and doom surrounding the legendary comic book creator in the past few years. Now into his 95th year, every week seem to bring new controversies and scandals surrounding Lee, his finances, and his care. He recently lost his wife of many years, had his blood stolen, breaks in, robberies, and legal action. Lee was also absent from Comic-Con this year, but his cameo in Teen Titans Go! To The Movies made him seem not so far away.

Summer 2018 has been a season filled with highly-anticipated sequels as well as exciting superhero action - and this weekend we have a full double dose. Not only are we seeing the return of everybody's favorite IMF agents, but also getting some colorful, kid-friendly fun for the DC Comics fans out there. In other words, get ready for Mission Impossible - Fallout and Teen Titans Go! To The Movies.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

Going back to the first Mission: Impossible all the way back in 1996, the spy franchise has been good for a cool $2.8 billion at the box office, and with each new installment it just seems to be getting better and better. While the first movie in the series received mostly middling marks from critics, the modern era has seen tremendous improvements with chapters like Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (93%), and, more recently, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (93%). Now we're getting ready for the next one, Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and it sounds like this may be the best and most thrilling adventure yet.

Early reviews are overwhelmingly positive so far, and this looks like another clear winner for Tom Cruise and company. With 67 reviews posted online it's sitting at a cool 96% on the Tomatometer. Many are calling it the best Mission: Impossible film to date, which is really saying something considering how far into the run we are. That being said, it looks like it's Cruise doing all the things he does best, with a solid story and antagonist to boot. Buckle up everyone, it's a mission you'll want to accept.

It sure does seem like every superhero under the sun is getting his or her own stand-alone feature film these days - but DC's Teen Titans have been feeling a bit left out of the process. However, now is the time for Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven and Beast Boy to shine, as they are now getting a special, meta-joke filled big screen adventure of their own. In Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, the superhero team is making its way to Hollywood, and from everything we've seen it looks like a funny, tongue-in-cheek bit of entertainment.

Sometimes you can just tell from the trailer if a movie will hit on all cylinders, and the previews for this one have been great. More importantly, the early reviews for Teen Titans Go! To The Movies have been very positive. It currently stands at 100% with 10 reviews being live, and critics are clearly appreciating the humor above all else. That's pretty key, given that it will allow the feature to appeal to all of the adults who will be taking their kids to the theater. This one looks like it could be a real hit, and keep a really fantastic superhero streak going in 2018.

Overall, it was a good week for the Rotten Watch, with two of the three of my predictions hitting within 10 percent. Starting with Equalizer 2 (Predicted: 53% Actual: 50%), the film is Denzel Washington's first ever sequel, and it fell right in the middle of the Tomatometer. While most critics agreed that Washington put on a great performance, they also didn't seem to feel that the story was up to snuff. Apparently the sequel doesn't really tread any new ground or distinguish itself from the myriad of other "rogue guy with special skills" flicks that come out many times over the course of a year.

Next up, Unfriended: Dark Web (Predicted: 52% Actual: 57%) was another predictive win. It finished six percentage points lower than the first in the series, with some critics thinking it clever and a commentary on our current relationship with the online world. Others thought it was heavy-handed and unoriginal. It ultimately inspired a lot of extreme reactions, which left it with a middling score.

Finally, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (Predicted: 48% Actual: 78%) was a big-time miss. The sequel complete crushed the first film, which finished at 54 percent when it was released a decade ago. It's not all that common to see a sequel completely outpace the original (see the previous two movies above as examples), but critics took to the story here much more than its predecessor. The soundtrack apparently didn't hurt either, and this will go down as one of my most errant predictions.

Sure, things in the DCEU might be a bit dark and adult-oriented, but the overarching DC mythos has plenty to offer when it comes to family-friendly content as well. While the adult heroes are off fighting Steppenwolf and Lex Luthor, the sidekicks have their own adventure coming in the form of Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. There's a lot of anticipation for the upcoming animated DC adventure, and early reactions from the film's first screening have hit the web. In fact, the opinions seem mostly positive. Check out one such response, below!

So, as you can see from what Germain Lussier had to say about Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, it looks like the film offers up some solid comedy that will appeal to the younger audiences in the theater. Beyond that, however, his tweet also acknowledges the notion that the sidekick-centric romp features some substantial subversion of traditional superhero tropes, along with some great cameos.

That's not the only reaction to Teen Titans Go! To The Movies that has hit the web since the film's first screening. Meg Downey also had a chance to screen the the DC project, and her reaction to the movie notes that it's a genuinely funny superhero adventure that will induce some great laughs. She wrote:

Lastly, we come to Scott Menzel, who had some seriously high praise for the quality of Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. Honing in on the positives with his response, he wrote that the DC adventure has even become his favorite animated movie of 2018 -- which is impressive when we consider the recent hit release of Brad Bird's Incredibles 2 over at Disney. He wrote:

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies takes a decidedly lighter approach to some of these beloved comic book heroes. Focusing on the titular Titans (the sidekick B squad of the Justice League roster), the film follows DC mainstays like Robin, Cyborg, Raven, Beast Boy, and Starfire as they venture to Hollywood to thwart a villainous mastermind on a mission of world domination. It looks like the movie takes clear aim at some of the well-worn tropes of the superhero genre, and given the sheer saturation of traditional comic book movies in the Hollywood scene, one could make the argument that there's no better time for this type of cinematic outing.

So, that is the early critical consensus surrounding the release of Teen Titans Go! To The Movies, but there will undoubtedly be more opinions and more reactions as the sidekick-oriented, family-friendly comedy screens for more audiences. The film will open wide later this summer on July 27, 2018, and on the live-action side of the DC world, you can also catch the first solo adventure of Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) later this year when James Wan's Aquaman premieres on December 21.

A crowded box office isn't something new to us or anyone who has been watching the market trends in the past couple of years. But this July seems stuffed to the gills even by those standards. There's a pretty diverse spread throughout this month's offerings too, as everything from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the Abba song book get their due throughout the next few weeks. So if you're ready to plan some excitement, get out your calendars and prepare to make some appointments with the following movies at a theater near you.

The First Purge

Throughout its history, The Purge franchise has made no secret of its politically influenced motivations. So naturally, dropping The First Purge on Independence Day is a pretty big statement just on the surface alone. But with the prequel looking to test the true mettle of the franchise's brand, slotting it in July's big tentpole spot is even more daring. With fantastic showings during each of the previous film's releases, the Blumhouse franchise is about to face its greatest challenge yet.

Ant-Man And The Wasp

Just when The First Purge thinks it's safe to counter-program the box office, Ant-Man and The Wasp decides to drop in only two days past the official release date. With Peyton Reed taking control of this MCU sequel from square one, it already looks like a confident sequel that poses to be a fun and fast paced comedy. Considering the last Marvel movie we saw in theaters was the ultimate bummer, we're ready for some super-powered comedy.

Sorry To Bother You

Slowly but surely, Sorry To Bother You has been gaining critical acclaim and serious buzz for its cast and director. Get Out and Atlanta star Lakeith Stanfield and writer/director Boots Riley team up with a cast including Tessa Thompson, Danny Glover and Armie Hammer, to tell a satirical story about telemarketing in a very weird alternate universe. How weird? Stanfield's protagonist has David Cross as his "white voice." Yeah, we're gonna need to see this immediately.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

Even the youngest kids in your family have something to look forward to in July, as Adam Sandler's animated franchise Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation is finally ready for their eager eyes. With the family leaving the hotel to set sail on a cruise led by a descendant of Van Helsing himself, there's clearly going to be some awkward comedy mixed in with the child-friendly shenanigans this series typically trades in.

Skyscraper

"Die Hard on a/in a [blank]" is a format that has made for both good and bad tentpole blockbusters in the history of film. No matter the result, it's a tried and tested formula, and it works. In the case of Dwayne Johnson's Skyscraper though, the setting isn't different, but rather the lead, as Dwayne Johnson's character is a military veteran with a limb missing. Adding an angle of personal perseverance, and a heavier, more serious looking tone to the Die Hard inspired formula, separates this one from both the crowd of fellow intimidators and the rest of this month's offerings.

The Equalizer 2

It's Denzel Washington's first sequel. It's Antoine Fuqua's first sequel. It's another movie that teams Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington together again. Clearly something about The Equalizer 2 is special, as bringing both these men back to the table for a career first is no easy feat. With Robert McCall back in action yet again, this mission is extremely personal, and deadly to those who stand in his way. When will folks learn that getting in Denzel Washington's way is just a one way ticket to a hospital bed, in the best case scenario?

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again

Say you're not into action or animation or even comic movies, but you're a big fan of musicals. Or, say you're a fan of those things, but really wanted a sequel to Mamma Mia. In either case, you're probably grinning widely thinking about how Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is only a few short weeks away. Part prequel, part sequel, part mystery as to whether Meryl Streep is alive in the universe or not, this second go at an ABBA jukebox musical looks like it'll please its fans rather well. Though even the most cynical opponents can't stand that tall when Cher starts to sing "Fernando" in the trailer. That's dirty pool, Universal.

Unfriended: Dark Web

Horror has had one hell of a year in 2018, with big ticket hits and indie darlings getting some serious play in the first half of the year. And it looks like Blumhouse is looking to make sure that the rest of the year lives up to this promising start, as their next film, Unfriended: Dark Web, is ready to resurrect a familiar evil for some summer fun. Only this time, it looks like things are about to go deeper down the rabbit hole, as the infamous darker corners of the internet are being haunted, drawing in new and unsuspecting victims into the game of their lives.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout

When it comes to franchise longevity, Mission: Impossible - Fallout is a good indicator of just how well Tom Cruise's flagship series has aged. With over 20 years of action and intrigue under its belt, this latest caper is the first to actually see the same crew, same villain and same writer/director involved. And yet, it still looks as fresh as Brian De Palma's initial entry into the series in 1996. While we're not sure what the formula to this film's youthful approach is, Henry Cavill's anger-stache just might be the ticket.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies

If you stuck animation, subversive comedy and some select DC Comics heroes into a blender, it'd probably be something the stars of Teen Titans Go! To The Movies might drink with reckless abandon. The successful Cartoon Network animated series leaps to the big screen, with a healthy dose of metahumor, some Will Arnett antics as a version of Slade who's uber-sensitive when you mention Deadpool, and Nicholas Cage as Superman. Yes, you read that right, IT FINALLY HAPPENED!

Deadpool was already a Marvel Comics fan favorite for years before his solo movie debuted, but thanks to Ryan Reynolds' portrayal, the Merc with the Mouth's popularity has significantly increased over the last few years. Meanwhile, over at DC Comics, there's a character who looks an awful lot like Deadpool, though their personalities couldn't be any more different: Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke. While Slade has clashed with numerous DC heroes over the years, he's arguably best known for being a Teen Titans villain, and with him serving as the main villain in Teen Titans GO! To the Movies, the marketing for the movie has been poking fun at his similarities to Deadpool, most recently with a text message conversation, as seen below.

Here's a little background for those of you unfamiliar with comic book history. Deathstroke was introduced in 1980, and 11 years later, Deadpool was designed to resemble Deathstroke. He was even given a similar name: Wade Wilson. Since then, Deadpool has carved out his own path with his fourth wall-breaking antics, but Teen Titans GO! To the Movies can't help but reference him in relation to Deathstroke, who's known simply as Slade in this movie. In the trailer that premiered last month, we saw Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Raven and Cyborg immediately assumed it was Deadpool they were dealing with, prompting Slade to wisely point out that he was the one who came out first.

Unfortunately for Slade, it's in one ear and out the other with the Teen Titans, or maybe they're just trolling him in the above text message conversation from Twitter. Regardless, Slade isn't going to get any respect from these young'uns. But while the animated version of Deathstroke suffers through these Deadpool jabs, Joe Manganiello's Deathstroke from the DC Extended Universe has his own movie in development, so it isn't all bad news for the character. As for Deadpool, his sequel adventure came out a few weeks ago and has performed incredibly critically and commercially. Just don't expect this R-rated version of the character to ever pop up in an all-ages animated movie... ever.

Keeping the comedic tone seen in the Teen Titans GO! TV series, Teen Titans GO! To the Movies sees Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Raven and Cyborg setting out to find a director for their movie. Upon learning that no one takes them seriously, the team of young heroes uses their conflict with Slade as an opportunity to prove that they're worthy of a movie. Along with the main voice cast from the TV series reprising their respective roles, Teen Titans GO! To the Movies' cast includes Will Arnett as Slade, Kristen Bell as Jade Wilson, Nicolas Cage as Superman, Jimmy Kimmel as Batman, Halsey as Wonder Woman and Lil Yachty as Green Lantern.

Teen Titans fans had their revival hopes all but extinguished when its goofy super-spinoff Teen Titans Go! became a megahit, and eventually got its own movie deal. Fittingly enough, though voice actress Tara Strong has claimed the potential success of Teen Titans Go! To The Movies might actually be what saves Teen Titans proper, as she reported a good run at the box office will bring the more mature versions of Robin, Raven and the rest back to the small screen. In her words:

Elsewhere, Tara Strong assured skeptical fans she was not joking when she said Teen Titans could be revived for Season 6 if Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is a success. Some fans still responded to her claim by saying her statement is just a clever ploy to get a good turnout for the film, because the Internet is gonna Internet. And that theory may very well be true in some ways, although one would imagine Strong's long-standing career with DC's animated shows had made her fully aware of the risks she'd take in toying with fans' hearts by making such a bold statement about Teen Titans' future.

Incredibly, it's been over a decade since the original Teen Titans was cancelled by Cartoon Network, yet the show still has its fair share of supporters who wish to see it revived. Those same fans were excited when Cartoon Network first revealed the Teen Titans Go! revamp, but many were put off after seeing the new series, which goes heavier on humor than the original series, and is stylized in chibi animation, while containing little to no carryover from the original show's canon. TTG! definitely has millions of fans out there, but the crossover between the two fandoms isn't as interconnected as some might think.

In hindsight, that might've all been for the best, as it now makes it possible for Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go! to exist as two different TV entities, which means the original series can finally have the Season 6 fans have been waiting to see for so long. Of course, that's all hinging on Teen Titans Go! To The Movies "kicking all butts" at the movies.

The film's chances of that aren't entirely known, although one would imagine much more success if Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go! fans will band together and see the film. Even if the film isn't a raging success, there's definitely a precedent that bringing the original Teen Titans back would be a good idea, and it's going to be hard to sweep that rumor back under the rug if Teen Titans Go! To The Movies disappoints. Nostalgic fans have reacted positively to revivals of shows like Samurai Jack and Young Justice, so we're anxious to see if the love for Teen Titans can somehow turn the younger heroes into move stars.

We're also hoping the TT animators are already working on Season 6's storyboards. And if Tara Strong wanted to bring up Batman: The Animated Series getting revived, we'd be down with that, too.

Teen Titans airs at odd hours on occasion on Cartoon Network, which is far less often than the daily airings of Teen Titans Go!. Earlier this year Avengers: Infinity War brought together almost all of the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a massive team-up event film. While that reasonably got a ton of attention, there is also a DC team up film this year that has been flying under the radar. Teen Titans Go! To the Movies will see the characters of the Teen Titans Go! TV series in their first big screen adventure, opposite some iconic heroes and new faces played by some recognizable names. In addition to the Titans from the series, we see that they will be facing off with Slade, voiced by none other than Will Arnett. The Arrested Development actor succeeds Ron Perlman who voiced Slade on the Teen Titans Go! TV show for one episode. Of course Slade is the real first name of Deathstroke, but I'm guessing because this is a children's cartoon and movie, as the name Deathstroke and his alias The Terminator were a bit much. So for those keeping score at home, Will Arnett has now voiced Batman and one of his deadliest villains. As always Will Arnett looks to be quite funny as a cartoonishly villainous Slade, who is declaring himself the world's greatest supervillain and appears to gain mind control over the Justice League.

We also see in this video Kristen Bell perfectly cast in the role of the bubbly director Jade, who proves unreceptive to Robin's desire for cinematic greatness. The success of the superhero genre has made it ripe for parody and this film is clearly doing some fun satire of it, as the marketing has referenced Justice League and even trolled Ryan Reynolds. And the last trailer had the kinds of meta-commentary jokes that you'd expect from something like Deadpool. Kristen Bell's character Jade should be an entertaining part of the film as a bigwig director that will hopefully poke at the business side of superhero movies.

Although you don't see him, the video also mentions Nicolas Cage who will be, at long last, playing Superman in the film. The big names brought in for the Teen Titan's big screen outing don't stop there either. Singer Halsey will be voicing Wonder Woman, rapper Lil Yachty will be voicing Green Lantern John Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel will be on growl duty as Batman. The film's trailers and the fun cast will hopefully add up to a superhero movie that looks like will appeal to audiences young and old.

The Teen Titans have been a DC Comics staple for decades, and now following following numerous appearances in television and animated films, the team is finally making their theatrical debut this summer in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies. Like the Teen Titans Go! TV series, this will be a humorous take on the adolescent crimefighters, but in addition to Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Raven and Starfire, we'll also be graced by appearances from other popular DC superheroes. This includes Batman, and talk show host Jimmy Kimmel recently announced that he'll be voicing the Caped Crusader in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies.

Jimmy Kimmel revealed his involvement in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies on Twitter by taking a shot at Will Arnett, the man who voices Batman in The LEGO Movie franchise. Ironically, Arnett is also part of Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, as he's voicing Slade Wilson, a.k.a. Deathstroke (although it doesn't sound like he'll be going by that moniker). Kimmel is basically throwing shade at one of his cast mates, so one can only imagine how this will go over the next time Arnett stops by Jimmy Kimmel Live! In any case, this makes Batman the fourth non-Teen Titan DC hero to be confirmed for Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, following Superman (Nicolas Cage), Wonder Woman (Halsey) and Green Lantern (Lil Yachty).

While Jimmy Kimmel primary spends his days hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the occasional awards ceremony, as well cameoing as himself on other shows, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies won't be his first voice acting gig, as he's previously played characters in The Smurfs 2 and The Boss Baby. Nowadays the comics and live action movies, Batman is generally depicted as a serious character, which is understandable given that he's a shadowy vigilante of the night. But occasionally we are treated to humorous versions of Gotham City's protector that harken back to the days of the Silver Age of Comics and the '60s Batman TV series. That's how Will Arnett's Batman was handled in The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie, and with a movie like Teen Titan Go! to the Movies, you can bet Jimmy Kimmel's Batman will follow suit.

Envious of all the other DC superheroes who have had movies made about them, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies follows the team setting out to Hollywood to find a director to helm their big screen debut, only to be refused since they're not serious or heroic enough. To prove that they're worthy of getting the movie, the Teen Titans will search for an archenemy to battle, who ends up being Slade, their actual nemesis from the comics.

In an alternate history of moviemaking, Nicolas Cage would have played Superman in what ended up being the long delayed and eventually crushed Tim Burton film Superman Lives. Alas, time and studio politics robbed us of that moment, leaving überfan Cage unable to play the role of his dreams. But as with most things, time has healed the wounds, and now we get to see Nic Cage actually playing the last son of Krypton in Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. Brace yourselves for movie history, as you watch that trailer below:

Nicolas Cage's Superman is a respected figure in the Teen Titans GO! To The Movies cast, but he has some harsh news for the young would-be heroes: they just aren't heroic enough to have their own movie. Having his point only proven to him throughout the trailer for the Warner Bros / DC animated film, his opinion is shared by pretty much everyone. Warner Bros executives, the entire DC hero and villain community, and even Will Arnett's Slade can't help but disrespect the Teen Titans -- with Slade being their main concern, as he plans to control the minds of the entire DC universe. Looks like Nicolas Cage picked the wrong day to start his career as a metahuman.

With all of the metahumor and tomfoolery in Teen Titans GO! To The Movies, it's only fitting that Cage be given the opportunity to embody the role he was meant to play. In a film where the original Green Lantern film is joked about, and Slade goes on a rant about how people should confuse Deadpool with him (not the other way around), Nic Cage's presence fits in with the rest of this film like a glove. It's just a shame they couldn't have animated his extremely interesting super suit, seen only in costume tests from years past.

The fact that Nicolas Cage likes to work is no Hollywood secret. However, you have to think he'd have a hell of a smile on his face when the call came in to ask for his golden pipes to join the Teen Titans GO! To The Movies cast. Taking this gig was probably as easy as breathing for him, and his vocal stylings are undeniably pure Cage. The approach is a pitch perfectly stoic Superman, with just a tinge of annoyed paternalism thrown in to tie the sardonic humor of Teen Titans Go into its version of the Man of Steel.

If you weren't looking forward to seeing Teen Titans GO! To The Movies before this trailer hit, then maybe you're mind is changed now that Nicolas Cage is here to fight for truth, justice, and the American way! Should that be the case, we'll see you in line on July 27th. That said, if your mind isn't changed, and you'd rather be going to see something else in theaters this summer, head over to the 2018 release schedule, and plan accordingly.

Yesterday's Deadpool 2 trailer was the most action-packed preview, but it also included a few of the Merc with the Mouth's trademark fourth wall breaks, one of which was him questioning if Cable was actually from the DC universe judging by how dark he was acting. It was a fun jab at the darker entries in the DC Extended Universe (I'm looking at you, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), but the folks over at the Teen Titans Go! to the Movies social media team didn't take it lightly and fire back at Reynolds to remind him about his pre-Deadpool superhero movie history, although in the process, they burn DC.

Like in the Teen Titans Go! TV series, Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Raven and Cyborg will be the stars of the show in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, but the animated flick will also see Justice Leaguers Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern show up. The movie will see the team of teenaged heroes heading to Hollywood to find a director to helm a movie about them, and the above gif shows Green Lantern recalling his own unfortunate cinematic past. This, of course, refers to 2011's Green Lantern, which starred Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and underwhelmed critically and commercially. John Stewart should just be thankful that the Green Lantern movie starred Hal rather than him; he still has the opportunity to make a great first cinematic impression alongside a new version of Hal in Green Lantern Corps. In any case, even though Reynolds is currently enjoying popularity as Deadpool, he shouldn't forget about that time he donned the emerald ring of willpower.

Obviously this is just a little fun being had between two competing companies, but if we really want to get into the finer details, then let's not forget that Ryan Reynolds was affiliated with Marvel long before he boarded Green Lantern. First he appeared as Hannibal King in 2004's Blade: Trinity, and though we try our hardest to forget it, he debuted as Wade Wilson in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Still, Green Lantern was Reynolds' first starring role as a superhero, so despite not being well-received, it still was more prominent compared to the previous two Marvel appearances. The first Deadpool movie threw in a dig at his time as the Emerald Knight when Wade Wilson asked that his super suit not be made green or animated. For Deadpool 2, Wade's throwing shade at the DC Extended Universe, but at least he's also willing to make fun of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well, as evidenced by when he called Josh Brolin's Cable Thanos. Those two characters do sound awfully similar.

One of the great 'what-ifs' of cinematic history is that of Tim Burton's late-90's cancelled Superman movie, Superman Lives. The film would have starred Nicolas Cage in the title role as the son of Krypton, and who knows how our comic book movie history might be different had that film come to fruition. But life is strange and Hollywood even more so, as Nicolas Cage now finds himself the once and future Superman. The Oscar-winning actor will get another chance to take on the Man of Steel in the animated film Teen Titans Go! To The Movies.

Just yesterday the big screen outing for the Cartoon Network series added a pair of music stars, Halsey and Lil Yachty to the cast as Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, respectively. But the celebrity cameos didn't stop there, as USA Today reports that Nicolas Cage will finally take on the role that so famously eluded him. The actor will be voicing the most famous member of the Justice League and the DC canon in the comedic animated film. Nicolas Cage isn't just an actor taking a part here either; he is a true fan of the character. In addition to having almost played Superman in Tim Burton's live-action film, the actor has owned Action Comics #1 (Superman's first comic book appearance) ,and named his son Kal-El. That is some serious fandom.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies is racking up a fairly impressive and star-studded lineup of cameos, but I don't know how it can top Nic Cage. Having big names come in to voice the more famous members of the DC universe opposite the upstart Titans is fun, but to have someone who was famously robbed of playing the character come back for another shot is just poetic. While this might not mean much to the younger audience who watches the Cartoon Network series, it is very cool for us older fans who will always wonder how weird and amazing the Burton/Cage collaboration on the character would have been. It has to be neat for Nicolas Cage, too. While he will never get to play Superman in live-action now and the role in the animated movie is just a cameo, he can still look back on his career and know that he was one of the actors to put his own stamp on the Man of Steel.

Based on the TV series and the trailer for the film, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies will be taking a satirical approach and making fun of the superhero genre and Hollywood at large. I have to wonder if there will be some fun meta jokes about Superman Lives and the Nic Cage interpretation of the character. Perhaps an allusion to the super weird costume that would have been worn in that film?

Although they often get second billing to the star-studded Justice League, DC's Teen Titans are one of the most enduring and popular comic book teams. The most recent adaptation of the beloved characters has been Cartoon Network's Teen Titans Go!, which is getting its own feature film this summer with Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. The voice actors from the show will be reprising their roles for this big screen outing and now they have some very famous names joining them as members of the Justice League. Singer/songwriter Halsey will be voicing Wonder Woman in the film, and rapper Lil Yachty will take on John Stewart, one of Earth's Green Lanterns.

These popular musicians will be taking on two of DC's most popular characters. Given her beliefs, music and causes she champions, Halsey seems well-suited to play the Amazon princess and feminist icon, Wonder Woman. Halsey's also done some voice acting in the past, voicing a character on American Dad!. And mumble rapper Lil Yachty may actually have the right voice and tone for the ultra-serious John Stewart. According to USA Today these two new additions to the cast are just the first of several celebrities who will be cameoing in the film and lending their voices to famous DC characters. Sam Register, an executive producer on the film, noted that they wanted to find voices that fit the roles as well as the playful tone of the film, and it seems they are quite happy with the cameo casting.

While I am generally skeptical of celebrities or non-voice actors being cast in animated films, these cameos actually make a fair bit of sense for the type of movie Teen Titans Go! To the Movies looks to be. The cheeky, meta series will be upping the ante for the feature film as the Titans, tired of being seen as sidekicks, attempt to get their big break with a Hollywood director played by Kristen Bell, only to face a villainous threat to their quest for stardom. This satirical approach to the story and the superhero genre lends itself to celebrity cameos and tongue-in-cheek moments, and the first trailer shows that this can produce some pretty funny results.

Teen Titans Go! is the second animated series following this group of heroes after the fan favorite 2003-2006 series, and while it skews younger than some fans might like, the new series has clearly found its audience, as the existence of the upcoming movie attests to. With so many live-action superhero films dominating the box office and the news cycle, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is actually another indication that the animated format offers a different and compelling storytelling opportunity for these characters. DC's animated films like Teen Titans: The Judas Contract have been loved by fans for years, but big screen opportunities are something new. I am curious to see if films like this one and the upcoming Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse are the beginning of a trend.

DC Comics has the theatrical realm covered on two fronts this year. For the DC Extended Universe fans out there, Aquaman swims into theaters in December, reuniting us with Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry and further exploring his Atlantean heritage. But if it's a lighthearted, animated movie you're looking for, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies will have you covered in July, and the latest poster for the comical team's jump to the silver screen also doubles at an amusing jab at one of the Justice League posters released last year.

Arguably the most eye-catching poster that Warner Bros and DC put out for Justice League last year depicted Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg standing triumphantly together, and in the center, it read "You Can't Save The World Alone," using the heroes' symbols to replace certain letters. For Teen Titans Go! to the Movies' poster (via Fandango), Robin, Stafire, Beast Boy, Raven and Cyborg (Vic Stone gets around) are also standing together, but unlike their live action, serious allies, they're in no way qualified to save the world... at all. It's okay, though. While we sat in theaters to watch the DCEU Justice League defeat Steppenwolf and keep Earth safe, those who check out Teen Titans Go! to the Movies want to see particular heroes get into shenanigans and hijinks. This isn't the first time Teen Titans Go! to the Movies has had a little fun with the DCEU, as the trailer came out last month tried to ride off the success of the Wonder Woman movie.

Spinning out of the New Teen Titans shorts that were broadcast during the DC Nation programming block, the Teen Titans Go! TV series has been going strong since 2013. Serving as a comedic spinoff to the Teen Titans animated series from last decade, the series focuses on what Robin, Stafire, Beast Boy, Raven and Cyborg are up to when not fighting the force of evil. Teen Titans Go! to the Movies will see the protagonists traveling to Hollywood so they can get their big movie break, but one of their greatest enemies will intercept them along the way. Along with Scott Menville, Chary Payton, Tara Strong, Hynden Walch and Greg Cipes all reprising their respective Titans, Will Arnett and Kristen Bell will be lending their vocal talents as Slade Wilson (a.k.a. Deathstroke) and Jade Wilson, respectively.

Since 2013, and following a series of shorts, the Teen Titans have been leading their own television adventures again in Teen Titans Go! on Cartoon Network. Although the show shares the same basic character designs and voice actors as the Teen Titans animated series from last decade, it's bares little resemblance with its predecessor, instead focusing more on comedy and gags. Last year, it was announced that this version of the team would be making the jump to the big screen, and now we have the first trailer for Teen Titans Go! To The Movies. Only rather than try to impress people with their own charm, Robin's teammates would rather capitalize off how popular Wonder Woman is right now.

It's no secret that Wonder Woman was one of the most successful superhero movies of 2017, earning numerous positive reviews and making over $820 million worldwide. So because this is the first time the Teen Titans are leading their own theatrical movie, Starfire, Beast Boy, Cyborg and Raven don't want to blow this, hence why they've all donned Diana of Themyscira's crimefighting outfits. We don't blame you for being enamored with Wonder Woman, guys. Like you said, she inspires people, and while the Teen Titans have certainly built a sizable fanbase over the decades, they're not at the same fame level as the Amazon warrior. Regardless, it's up to Robin to get the Teen Titans Go! To The Movies trailer back on track, so he let's the Narrator Guy do his thing.

Cut to the Teen Titans fighting the gigantic Balloon Man, and because Teen Titans Go! is primarily geared towards kids, we don't blame them for inserting a fart joke into the battle. The previews caps off with a nice zinger at Aquaman, because as the Teen Titans and Narrator Guy see it, if Arthur Curry can get his own movie, anyone can. Fair, although let's not forget that Jason Momoa's Aquaman is a far cry from the orange-shirted, green-gloved version most people recognize.

As the title suggests, Teen Titans Go! To The Movies will see Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Cyborg and Raven heading to Hollywood so they can star in their own movie, only to be intercepted by one of their greatest enemies. Along with the main cast all reprising their roles (Scott Menville as Robin, Hynden Walch as Starfire, Greg Cipes as Beast Boy, Khary Payton as Cyborg and Tara Strong as Raven), the movies will feature Will Arnett as Slade Wilson, a.k.a. This is Arnett's second time voicing a DC Comics character, as he's already well known as Batman in the LEGO Movie franchise, and while Deathstroke has a daughter named Rose in the comics, clearly the filmmakers decided it was better to go the rhyming route with her name. Oh, and according to USA Today, rather than follow in her father's villainous footsteps, Jade Wilson is instead a "filmmaker du jour" who the Teen Titans seek out to help them find cinematic fame.
