This week marks a big milestone for The Daily Show on Comedy Central, as it was 30 years ago — July 22, 1996, to be exact — that Craig Kilborn’s version of the satiric news show first aired. The show has seen several hosts sitting behind the desk in that time, including Trevor Noah, who vacated the position in 2022 after seven years. So why did the comedian leave what seemed to be such a good job? Noah had a pretty thoughtful response.

Trevor Noah made a significant impact on The Daily Show over the seven years that he hosted it, winning two Emmy Awards from more than a dozen nominations. During a visit to The Diary of a CEO podcast, he said there wasn’t just one thing that prompted his exit, but he gave a couple of reasons:

Fair enough. If Trevor Noah wasn’t used to seeing shows last for a decade or longer, he likely never intended to stay longer than he did. However, what was possibly a bigger factor was the realization he came to in 2020. In Noah’s words:

With many people forced to stay home during COVID, and as the former Daily Show host said, many found some benefits to being able to spend more time with their loved ones. Trevor Noah didn’t have that experience — and he realized it wasn’t just because of the lockdown. He continued:

Once the world started to open up again, Trevor Noah looked back at the previous seven or eight years and decided to make a change, saying:

Since he left The Daily Show, Trevor Noah has put out some comedy specials, started a podcast and served as the host of the Grammy Awards. Hopefully he’s also had plenty of time to travel and reconnect with friends and family.

As for The Daily Show, new episodes continue to air on the 2026 TV schedule, but it hasn’t seen one permanent host since Noah’s departure. Guest hosts initially filled in before Jon Stewart returned to host Monday nights, with correspondents Michael Kosta, Desi Lydia, Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper and Josh Johnson rotating on the other days of the week.

With the 30th anniversary upon us, it’s a good time to look back at the hosts — namely Trevor Noah, Craig Kilborn and Jon Stewart — who made the comedic news program what it is and how much work they put into it.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey may trade laboratories and nuclear dread for monsters, gods and storm-tossed ships, but Jon Stewart sees a surprising connection between the filmmaker’s latest epic and his Oscar-winning book-to-screen adaptation Oppenheimer. And the link goes beyond both of their titles beginning with an “O.” After hearing the late show host's explanation, I am having trouble looking at Odysseus’ voyage as a simple adventure home, because Stewart makes some great points.

Jon Stewart Breaks Down His Theory About The Odyssey And Oppenheimer

During Nolan’s appearance on The Daily Show, Stewart admitted that his comparison might sound “far afield” before arguing that The Odyssey feels like a thematic sequel to Oppenheimer. Rather than connecting the movies through genre or plot, he focused on two men carrying the psychological weight of events that changed the world around them. Nolan’s response made it clear that Stewart had not wandered off course.

Stewart said the part of Oppenheimer that stayed with him was the burden J. Robert Oppenheimer must have felt after seeing what his work had created. He then connected that guilt to Odysseus returning from the Trojan War:

Nolan joked about avoiding “3,000-year-old spoilers,” but he otherwise agreed with Stewart’s reading. The director said Stewart watched his 2026 calendar release the way he intended and explained that his adaptation treats the Trojan War and Odysseus’ role in it with real “weight” and “gravity.”

Additionally, Nolan confirmed that the Cillian Murphy-led historical drama remained on his mind while making The Odyssey. The celebrated director said he tries to leave each project with questions he can continue exploring, adding that he “definitely brought Oppenheimer into this movie.”

That may be the clearest explanation yet of why Nolan followed a historical drama about the atomic bomb with his interpretation of Homer’s mythic poem. On the surface, the projects appear to be at opposite ends of Nolan's illustrious filmography. Beneath the spectacle, both appear interested in what happens after a man participates in something too large and destructive to fully understand.

Why I Think Stewart Is Onto Something

The comparison works because Odysseus is often remembered for the exciting stops along his journey. There is the Cyclops, the Sirens, Circe and a sea full of angry gods. Those episodes can easily turn the story into a greatest-hits tour of Greek mythology.

Stewart’s reading puts the wounded man back at the center. Odysseus is not merely delayed on his way home but is a soldier returning from a decade-long war, carrying memories of violence, lost friends and decisions that destroyed a city. Even the famous Trojan Horse (which got the popcorn bucket treatment) becomes less of a clever trick and more of a weapon whose consequences follow its creator.

That sounds very Christopher Nolan. Oppenheimer spends much of its runtime examining what happens after intellectual achievement becomes mass destruction. The Odyssey can ask a similar question through myth: What happens to the warrior after the war ends, and he's left with regret, while the songs call him a hero?

I also like that this connection made by Jon Stewart gives Nolan’s film a reason to exist beyond its scale. Real ships, giant sets and an entire film shot with IMAX photography are exciting, but emotional fallout could keep the movie from becoming an expensive mythology slideshow.

The Odyssey opens in theaters July 17.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert may have ended a few months ago, but it's still making an impact on the 2026 TV schedule. That’s because as the 2026 Emmy nominees were named, Colbert’s program got one last laugh as it scored an Outstanding Variety Series nomination.

Coming off its first Emmy win last year, Colbert’s show was nominated this year alongside The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and Saturday Night Live. Notably, this year, these shows are recognized under the Outstanding Variety Series category, as the Outstanding Talk Series and Outstanding Scripted Variety Series categories were merged into one.

Last year, Colbert’s program won Outstanding Talk Series following news breaking about The Late Show’s cancellation. There were still months of episodes left at the time, and the series came to a close in the middle of 2026, making it eligible for this year’s Emmys.

Now, overall, the competition in this category is strong and fascinating. Last Week Tonight has won ten Emmys. It has won three times in Outstanding Scripted Variety Series and seven times in Outstanding Variety Talk Series. In 2023, it moved from Talk to Scripted series, and after that happened, The Daily Show won Talk Series twice, and The Late Show took home the trophy last year.

This year, all those shows will compete for the same trophy, and the other competition is Jimmy Kimmel Live! And Saturday Night Live, both of which are beloved programs that have good reasons to win too.

Notably, more than one show could take home gold. When this new category emerged, the Television Academy reclassified it as an area award. That means voters don’t select one winner; instead, they answer the question “Does this nominee merit an Emmy?” Any nominee that reaches a 90% “yes” threshold can win, per Deadline.

Even if multiple shows win, I still think Colbert and The Late Show are likely a frontrunner. Considering how his show ended for good this year, I’d guess that many would want to reward the program for its run and give it one last celebration.

Plus, there’s a lot of love for Stephen Colbert. Last year, after his show got canceled and the 2025 Emmy nominees were announced, Jimmy Kimmel actually campaigned for his competitor instead of his own show. He literally put up a billboard in support of The Late Show.

While I don’t know if that kind of thing will happen again, I would assume all the nominated programs will continue to support each other. I mean, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver and Stephen Colbert are pals, and they all appeared on The Late Show in the episodes before it ended this spring.

So, it will be interesting to see who wins this year. However, no matter what, the nomination alone gives Stephen Colbert one last laugh after CBS canceled his show. Yep, he’ll get to celebrate The Late Show one more time months after it came to a close, and I think that’s very deserved.

The end of May will bring about a big change to the 2026 TV schedule, and to those of successive years, as CBS will officially be out of the late night talk show biz. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is set to conclude on May 21, ten months after CBS officially canceled the long-running staple previously hosted by David Letterman. Some fans are expecting potentially calamitous fireworks upon his eventual exit, but Colbert’s former Comedy Central partner in crime has other thoughts.

Emmy-winning writer Ben Karlin spent seven years on The Daily Show before co-creating The Colbert Report with the titular D.C. native, so he and Colbert obviously have a solid relationship. While appearing on The Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast to talk about his new series Bait (streaming via Amazon Prime subscription), Karlin was asked for his thoughts on whether the host will bow out in a blaze of politically polarizing glory, or something more traditional. He answered:

With this answer and others, Karlin made sure to note that he was speaking mainly for himself and not for anyone else, but I think he's pretty on the money with his assessment. Had The Late Show's final episode come in the weeks immediately following the cancellation announcement, when the sting was still fresh and emotions were all over the place, then I could maybe see Stephen Colbert stepping outside his gentlemanly comfort zone to turn full heel for his final stretch. (I kinda wish we had a Sliding Doors situation where we could see what that eventuality looked like.)

However, with the final episode set so many months after the decision was made, the initial heightened feelings have settled, and now it's become a more normalized end-date on the horizon. Granted, Colbert has caused some flashbangs over the months, particularly involving his non-televised interview with political candidate James Talarico, and the related dust-up with FCC chairman Brendan Carr.

Ben Karlin addressed that, in the scheme of things, Colbert's Late Night exit is about as good as it can get for a host facing an inevitable disappointment, since there has been such a long runway. In his words:

If losing every job came with the same kind of self-dictated endgame, I might have been far less employable in my life. But that's obviously not the way it goes for most people.

To his point, though, Colbert quickly started setting up new gigs for himself around the time of CBS' cancellation decision. He's popped up on Elsbeth and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and was recently a surprise guest voice in the Handmaid's Tale spinoff The Testaments. Perhaps the biggest news of all, however, is that he's working on writing a new Lord of the Rings movie, as inspired by Bill Hader. So it's safe to say he won't be twiddling his thumbs at home for the back half of 2026.

Plus, for all the upset feelings about being ousted, Karlin pointed out that getting out of late night after 11 years could be better than sticking with it for decades, as that format's success can be a double-edged sword. As he put it:

Stephen Colbert can definitely ride off into the sunset knowing that he delivered the goods as a worthy follow-up to David Letterman, and hopefully without any regrets. Oh yeah, and for that sunset, the sun is actually Jon Stewart's face.

While The Daily Show may not have given us quite the volume of great comedians that Saturday Night Live has, it has still given us some absolute titans. Top among them have to be Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert. The two did a lot of great work on the show, and Carrell says he got a great piece of advice from Colbert that helped his early work on the show.

A key component of the Daily Show, especially in the early days, were field segments where comedians would play the role of a TV news reporter getting a special interest story. Carrell was great at these, but he tells Amy Phoeler on the Good Hang podcast that early on, he hated to do them. He explained:

There’s a fine line between comedy and making fun of people. These early Daily Show segments, as Carell points out, often had people with no idea they were on a comedy show because it wasn’t as well-known at that point. Part of the comedy was drawing attention to potentially wild things people were doing, but Carrell clearly wasn’t comfortable with it.

Help came in the form of The Daily Show’s other Stephen, Colbert, who suggested Carell play a character rather than himself. This allowed him to be the thing people were laughing at, rather than whoever he was interviewing. He continued:

Colbert certainly knew of what he spoke. His own character, a right-wing ideologue, worked so well that he ended up getting his own show, The Colbert Report. The show worked so well that many debated Colbert's own politics for a long time, unsure if he was making fun or trying to make a point. Colbert's politics aren't so much in debate these days.

Carrell’s character worked great. He was able to make himself the focus rather than people who maybe didn’t deserve ridicule. And he also helped set himself apart from the crowd of early Daily Show correspondents, becoming one of the first to make deals for movies outside of the show.

The Daily Show has gone through a lot of changes and there have been some great performers on the show in the years since Carrell and Colbert said goodbye, but there’s a lot to be said for those early years that may still be the best the show has ever had.

Just a few weeks ago, the future of Jimmy Kimmel as a late-night talk show host was in question. He had been suspended from his self-titled show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! And whether he would ever come back was unknown. It was certainly a wild few days for Kimmel, but potentially not as crazy as the story of how he got the job in the first place. A situation that apparently had him stealing the job away from Jon Stewart.

In an appearance on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, Kimmel told the story of how he got hired as the host of ABC’s first traditional late-night talk show. Kimmel credits producer Michael Davies, who had hired Kimmel to co-host Comedy Central game show Win Ben Stein’s Money, for suggesting him to ABC President Lloyd Braun. Kimmel added that Jon Stewart nearly had the job locked up when things changed. Kimmel said:

Jon Stewart had only been hosting The Daily Show for a couple of years at the point this would have been happening. Somewhat ironically, it was a job he got after the previous Daily Show host, Craig Kilborn, had been hired away to host the show following David Letterman's new show on CBS. ABC only moved forward with its late-night talk show that Kimmel ended up hosting after Letterman decided to go to CBS and not ABC.

Kimmel admits he had no idea he had even been suggested as the host, as it wasn’t public knowledge at the time that ABC was looking to replace Politically Incorrect or that "they wanted a traditional late-night talk show." The show would eventually be moved into the Nightline time slot to compete directly with other major late-night shows.

According to Kimmel, ABC brought him into a meeting under false pretenses to discuss hosting a Thursday night variety show. He apparently spent that meeting talking about David Letterman, Kimmel’s talk show idol, with the President of ABC, and the discussion of hosting any sort of a show never came up.

Kimmel says he first heard about the late-night show because the secretary to the President of ABC was married to his The Man Show co-host, Adam Carolla, who was also friends with Kimmel’s wife. Ultimately, he was hired, which put his manager in an awkward position. Kimmel continued:

Jon Stewart, of course, was fine without it. He transformed The Daily Show into a late-night heavyweight in its own right. He's now back hosting the show after a stint with Apple TV+. Although that does raise questions about why ABC decided to go with Kimmel, a relative unknown at the time, over the better-known Stewart. It turns out Kimmel himself asked Disney CEO Bob Iger that question once, and got a somewhat blunt answer:

Kimmel may have been cheaper at the time, but a quarter century later, it does appear that money was well spent.

If you thought that the only major shakeup in late night television before the end of the 2025 TV schedule would be The Late Show with Stephen Colbert being cancelled by CBS, ABC and Nexstar proved you wrong. Production on Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended "indefinitely" just hours before Kimmel's next new episode was set to film. A big question in the aftermath was how other late night hosts would react, especially after the strong reactions to Colbert's cancellation in July. Jon Stewart of The Daily Show and Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show were first up.

Their opening monologues were actually surprisingly similar, and not just because both hosts chose to wear red ties for the episodes that aired on September 18. Instead of sharing any hot takes on the situation like other celebs shared on social media about Kimmel's suspension, both took the approach of pretending to be – to quote Stewart – "administration compliant." The Daily Show episode was the first to air, so let's start there.

Jon Stewart On The Daily Show

Compared to Jon Stewart's rant when The Late Show was cancelled, he was downright restrained in his on-screen reaction to Jimmy Kimmel Live! getting suspended. In fact, he didn't even mention Jimmy Kimmel until about ten minutes in, and his approach was to deliver his monologue like he was in a hostage situation and forced to say what he was saying, to the mirth of the studio audience.

In fact, Stewart didn't even mention Jimmy Kimmel until about ten minutes in, but it was already clear that the Comedy Central was going to deliver something memorable by bringing Stewart in on a Thursday when he's usually the Monday host.

The broadcast largely used video clips of President Trump and other networks rather than Stewart making direct commentary. That's not to say that he leaned into the Daily Show style of comedy from start to finish, and he got more sincere when he noted that "it's not really about the specific words." He said instead that it's "about having a basic sense of humanity." Take a look for yourself:

New episodes of The Daily Show air Monday - Thursday on Comedy Central at 11 p.m. ET, with Stewart hosting on Mondays. As for The Tonight Show, Fallon's approach was similar to Stewart's in some key ways but quite different in others.

Jimmy Fallon On The Tonight Show

Jimmy Fallon wasted no time in explicitly addressing the late night TV elephant in the room, bringing up Jimmy Kimmel in the first moments of his monologue. His opening joke was:

Fallon went on to crack a joke about getting texts from his dad that was almost identical to a joke he cracked after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert got the axe. He clarified that The Tonight Show won't be censored and that he'd cover "the President's trip the U.K. like I normally would."

Somewhat similarly to The Daily Show, The Tonight Show's approach was to seemingly "let" Jimmy Fallon go off about the situation while dubbing over his words with gentler language. Based on the cheers from the audience, a crowd-favorite joke was when his joke about POTUS' hair was dubbed over with "–– better than Conrad's from The Summer I Turned Pretty."

Like Stewart, Fallon did have some very sincere moments, including what he said about the man who had been his ABC counterpart:

New episodes of The Tonight Show air on Monday - Thursday at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC. It remains to been seen if there any major new developments regarding the future (or lack thereof) of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in the coming days to be addressed in late night TV monologues.

The Daily Show has long reported on major events impacting not just the United States but the world at large. With that analysis comes biting commentary that usually skewers public figures like politicians. The late-night TV landscape is changing, with The Late Show’s recent cancellation being further indication of that notion. Also, Paramount Global, the corporate parent to both of the aforementioned programs is going through corporate restructuring. Now, Daily Show's Desi Lydic is speaking on whether changes are in store for the series.

What’s Going On At The Daily Show Amid The Sea Of Changes?

Desi Lydic has been a presence on The Daily Show since 2015 and, since then, she’s not only served as a correspondent but also a rotating host. In 2024, Lydic won the Primetime Emmy for hosting after several nominations in various categories. This year, the comedian was also among the 2025 Emmy nominees and, on Saturday, she won Outstanding Performer In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series. Following her win, Lydic fielded a question about whether Daily may be censored moving forward:

The question shared in Gold Derby’s YouTube video refers to the fact that Paramount recently merged with Skydance, and new CEO David Ellison is now in charge. With this new corporate regime in place, it’s been speculated that big brass might seek to make alterations to content, as Ellison allegedly wants to get back to “fundamentals.” Ellison has said, however, that he’s a fan of South Park, which has been making headlines for sparking political-related controversies.

Why Are People Still Questioning The Late Show’s Cancellation?

Despite some upbeat comments made by David Ellison, there are those who are still skeptical about the cancellation of The Late Show. Paramount explained that the decision to axe the series was motivated by financial variables. A somewhat grim-looking financial picture has since emerged, and it’s also been alleged that Stephen Colbert’s show has been losing CBS millions over the last several years.

Some continue to side-eye the cancellation decision, however, due to other recent developments. Around that same time, Paramount settled its 60 Minutes-related lawsuit with U.S. President Donald Trump, and that legal situation was largely considered to be the final obstacle standing in the way of the Skydance merger. Additionally, Stephen Colbert was openly critical of his employers for settling the suit, with some insiders even claiming that the host was essentially “daring” execs to fire him.

Various late-night veterans have since spoken out about The Late Show’s demise, such as the program’s former host, David Letterman as well as Jimmy Kimmel, who doesn’t believe the series has lost as much money as reported. The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart also denounced the cancellation with a fiery, on-air address about the work that hosts perform night after night.

Jon Stewart isn’t contending with changes on his own show at the moment, according to Desi Lydic. However, with the changes taking place within the media landscape right now and the shifts at Paramount, it’s difficult not to wonder if The Daily Show will remain unimpacted moving forward.

Any surefire expectations one might have had for the back half of the 2025 TV schedule went out the stage set’s decorative window panels when CBS shockingly canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert ahead of what would have been the titular comedian’s 11th season behind the desk. Though the late night staple still has a year left, the decision has left many entertainers fuming and confused, with clashing reports about why the show is ending. Then along came Jon Stewart.

I’m sure wasn’t alone in expecting The Daily Show’s most celebrated host to have a pointed opinion about The Late Show’s confirmed demise, and Stewart did not disappoint during his latest appearance. Although it should also surprise no one that he started his fevered speech off not with a bang or a whimper, but with a joke. Addressing the cancellation to a wall of audience jeers, Stewart said:

The NYC native then offered a brief backstory that touched upon the high-quality pre-2016 era when they shared the screen and Daily Show stage on a nightly basis for years, and then gave Colbert lots of kudos for making the leap to succeed the iconic David Letterman’s Late Show mastery. But then the good vibes turn to sour grapes as the cancellation is once again addressed.

Sardonically pinning the decision to axe both Colbert’s run and the entirety of the Late Show franchise on “purely financial reasons,” Stewart said that within that model, everyone else is basically working a “Blockbuster kiosk inside a Tower Records.” Which is to say, putting a failing hat on a failing hat. The host continued drilling down on CBS' financial choices tying into parent company Paramount Global nearing an $8 billion merger with Skydance Media, saying:

This element is indeed always the most baffling thing about network mergers to me, although I'll be the first to concede that I am sorely lacking in background knowledge. But it does seem non-intuitive to eliminate any of the long-running brands that helped make a network or studio worth acquiring in the first place.

Stewart continued, saying that while he understands the Daily Show's limitations as a comedy-driven talk show, he still stands strongly by the idea that this show and others are meant to be there to entertain and inform without a financial overhead being a deciding factor. As he put it:

Naturally, Jon Stewart also strikes a political chord by addressing CBS and Paramount's legal dealings with Donald Trump, stemming largely from POTUS' recently settled lawsuit against 60 Minutes, as a major factor, with the idea being that the network is scrubbing content that could be skewed as politically subversive.

Then rather unnaturally, the frontman temporarily launches into a spoken-word rendition of Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight" before revealing a six-piece choir behind the curtains. And I'd be viewers have never heard a more soulful rendition of the phrase "Go fuck yourself," that what played out.

If anyone manages to miscontrue Jon Stewart's message here, I don't want that person to be in charge of anything important.

The Daily Show has been on the air for almost 30 years had its politically-focused format since 1999. The Comedy Central’s satirical news program has gone through a lot of shakeups during that time, including Jon Stewart hosing for 16 years, leaving for nearly a decade, and then coming back in 2024 to host on a part-time basis, which is still happening on the 2025 TV schedule. On an interesting behind-the-scenes note, I learned from The Daily Show head writer about why the series had to change the way it does callback jokes.

At the end of my recent conversation with Amira, which also included him sharing his theory on why it’s so hard to write a good Donald Trump joke, I brought up how a lot of people these days are watching The Daily Show in segments on websites/apps like YouTube and TikTok, rather than viewing full episodes either on broadcast TV or with a Paramount+ subscription. As such, I was curious if this online popularity factored into writing certain portions of the show, and Amira brought up how it’s required callback jokes to be changed, starting off with the following:

Dan Amira started working on The Daily Show in 2014, and it’s not as though YouTube and social media wasn’t prominent back then. However, it wasn’t as easy to follow along with the show online outside of perusing the Comedy Central website. So it was all the more important to watch full episodes when they aired on linear, and that meant it’d be easy enough to follow along with a callback joke to the first act after a commercial break.

But now that watching only portions of The Daily Show is more popular than ever, Dan Amira informed me that it’s become necessary to shelve multi-segment callback jokes in order to not confuse online viewers. As he explained:

It hadn’t occurred to me before this interview how The Daily Show’s callback jokes had needed to be tweaked in response to the changing times. It’s one thing to throw back to a joke within the same segment that had been told just minutes earlier, but revisiting that joke within a separate segment will just come off as random to a person who’s pulled up a clip online. I didn’t realize I missed this before Dan Amira mentioned it, but I understand why the callback joke scale-back needed to happen, and it certainly doesn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the series that’s existed since the mid-2000s.

The Daily Show airs Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. ET, with Jon Stewart hosting on Mondays and a weekly rotating lineup of the correspondents handling the rest of the nights. Stewart is sticking around until the end of 2025, and it remains to be seen if he’ll re-up his deal once again in 2026, or if a new permanent host for The Daily Show will finally be selected.

It’s impossible to run a late night talk show these days without making jokes about Donald Trump, the current President of the United States. We went through this before during his first term, and he remained a popular topic of humor during Joe Biden’s sole term in office. As a news satire program, however, The Daily Show arguably focuses more on Trump than any of these other shows, particularly over the course of the 2025 TV schedule. But Dan Amira, the head writer of the long-running Comedy Central series, shared a theory with CinemaBlend about why it’s harder to come up with a good Trump joke than one might think.

Amira has been working on The Daily Show since 2014, one year before Donald Trump announced he was running for President the first time around, and he was promoted to head writer in 2018, one year into Trump’s first presidency. During my interview with Amira, he acknowledged that ]the 45th and 47th president “certainly gives you more material than anyone else could possibly give you.” But that doesn’t always make it easy to craft jokes about Trump, with Amira telling me:

Basically, it boils down to the line between satire and reality being too blurred. If prime joke material is happening in real life, then how do you get even more absurd from there? It’s something that Dan Amira would like to be toned down with regard to Donald Trump, but that’s not in the cards. It’s quite a different landscape compared to when the businessman cameoed in Home Alone 2.

Still, Dan Amira and his writing team are up to the challenge as The Daily Show continues his 25+-year run. When Amira joined the series more than a decade ago, Jon Stewart was a year out from leaving the show he’d been hosting since 1999. Then at the beginning of 2024, a little over a year after Trevor Noah departed The Daily Show, Stewart returned to host on a part-time basis and executive produce. So not only does Amira get to work more closely with Stewart this time around, he no doubt welcomes collaborating with the man on Donald Trump jokes week after week.

If you’ve been watching The Daily Show on the 2025 TV schedule, you know that the show continuing the format of having Jon Stewart host the satirical news program on Mondays, and then correspondents Michael Kosta, Desi Lydia, Ronny Chieng or Jordan Klepper hosting the rest of the week’s shows. However, there was a period in 2023 when former Daily Show talent Hasan Minhaj was being lined up to take over as permanent host, only to lose that job in the wake of controversy surrounding his standup material. Minhaj has once again opened about about the firing, but this time it’s Roy Wood Jr.’s comments about what the cast knew at that time that really caught my attention.

Like Minhaj, Roy Wood Jr. also used to be a correspondent on The Daily Show, beginning when Trevor Noah took over hosting the series in September 2015 and leaving in October 2023. He and Minhaj were part of a THR roundtable that included fellow comics Seth Meyers, Jamie Foxx, Chelsea Handler and Sarah Silverman, and when asked when he found the “comedic potential” about his experience having the hosting job taken away, Minhaj answered:

Hasan Minhaj started out as correspondent on The Daily Show in 2014, the year before Jon Stewart left the first time. He stuck around until 2018, when he departed to host his short-lived Netflix comedy talk show Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, but then came back to his old stomping grounds in early 2023 to guest host for a week. Then later that year, it was reported he was the frontrunner to become the permanent host.

However, that September, a New Yorker article was published claiming that Minhaj had embellished certain stories in his standup acts. So despite the fact that his deal was supposedly “all but done” by the end of the summer, the combination of that controversy and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes sidelining plans to introduce a new Daily Show host by the fall resulted in the deal being scrapped. Roy Wood Jr. later chimed with his experience of learning the news:

Although Roy Wood Jr. made his last appearance on The Daily Show in May 2023, it wasn’t until the following October that he officially departed. So although the series was off the air that summer and early fall, he and the others working on the show were in communication about the Hasan Minhaj situation, but couldn’t get a clear answer on what was exactly happening. That’s so bizarre to me, as you’d think that of all people in the world, the actors, writers and crew on The Daily Show would be made privy to why the shakeup was occurring.

This roundtable wasn’t the first time Hasan Minhaj has noted how his misfortune paved the way for Jon Stewart to return to The Daily Show. But this time, he also compared it to if Seth Meyers had died and the ghost of Johnny Carson was brought back for Late Night (even though he hosted The Tonight Show). Stewart coming back clearly worked out considering he’s continuing in his current position until December, and maybe he’ll extend his contract again for a 2026 run.

The Daily Show airs Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. ET on Comedy Central, and episodes can be streamed afterwards with a Paramount+ subscription. As the 2025 movie schedule continues to unfold, Paul Rudd fans have reason to be excited. Currently, Death of a Unicorn has the comedian/MCU Avenger squaring off in a darkly comic creature feature, and his upcoming picture, Friendship, seems to be just as off-kilter. So we should all be preparing for the two most popular Rudd-tastic memes to resurface on the internet: that disgustingly viral Ant-Man vs. Thanos theory from Avengers: Endgame, and the fact that the man is apparently ageless, as recently mentioned by Jon Stewart.

When it comes to The Daily Show’s Paul Rudd interview, Jon Stewart makes the claim yet again that Rudd is older than he is. But that’s something I have to apologize for debunking up front, as that claim is 100% false. Unless of course there is some sort of Endgame style time travel involved, in which case anything can happen.

Before we get to the facts though, let’s not let them get in the way of a good joke. Here now, in pictorial form, is Stewart’s favorite joke involving Paul Rudd:

That’s not even the weirdest thing to come out of this Daily Show interview, as the clip’s title on YouTube is only a slight indication of just wild it truly gets. But, for those of you who got a good laugh at Jenna Ortega roasting Paul Rudd during a recent Death of a Unicorn interview, this sort of humor is definitely up your alley.

Which will make the facts I’m about to lay out all the easier to stomach. Those still poring over Rudd’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire appearance may be shook to learn that the New Jersey-born star will be turning 56 on his next birthday, which is in a few weeks. The November-born Jon Stewart, on the other hand, is 62 at the time of this publication.

Depending on who you ask, seven years may not be a huge age gap. At least, that’s what you’d probably hear if half of the pair you’re comparing wasn’t Paul “Ol’ Ageless” Rudd.

On the more serious side of things, Paul Rudd’s personal health routine is an actual key to keeping the Avengers: Doomsday star in fighting shape. Which will be very handy when it comes to facing off against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Though I don’t care how fit the man is, without those Pym Particles it’ll be impossible to fit in that prank-sized directors chair shown off during Doomsday’s epic cast reveal.

Jon Stewart and other media personalities know how to play up a gag, and his joke inaccurately claiming Paul Rudd is older than he proves that point rather well. By the time the massive Marvel two-parter hits over 2026 and 2027, we’ll probably see at least two more interviews where Stewart and Rudd make each other laugh. I can imagine them trading fictional birthdays and dropping other wild punchlines involving Ant-Man's powers potentially maiming evil doers at a moment's notice.

The Daily Show viewers have gotten used to seeing Jon Stewart host the comedy program once a week on the 2024 TV schedule, usually on Mondays, but sometimes on other nights if there are special circumstances. Stewart’s return after nearly a decade away followed after a year of the Comedy Central series cycling through guests hosts and correspondents sitting behind the anchor desk, with the latter still happening. However, there was a time when Hasan Minhaj was being lined up to become The Daily Show’s next permanent host, and the comedian revealed what Stewart told him when the gig fell through.

Following his original tenure on The Daily Show as a correspondent from 2014 to 2018, word came in during summer 2023 that Minhaj was the frontrunner to take over as host from Trevor Noah, who departed in December 2022. However, following a controversy involving his standup routine, this plan was scrapped, and while Minhaj was obviously disappointed about this turn of events, he shared with Esquire that Stewart encouraged him to “make something hilarious” from this unfortunate professional experience:

In case you’re unfamiliar, a month it was reported that Comedy Central was courting Hasan Minhaj to be Trevor Noah’s successor on The Daily Show (and we later learned that the deal was “all but done by late summer”), a New Yorker article was published claiming that Minhaj had either embellished or simply made up stories for his standup act. Minhaj described the story as “needlessly misleading” and posted a video in late October responding to the publication’s allegations. By that point, though, Minhaj was reportedly “suddenly seen to be a liability,” and the search for Noah’s replacement widened again.

Jon Stewart was among a handful of comedians who Hasan Minhaj spoke to after all this went down, with others including Mike Birbiglia, Ray Youssef and John Mulaney. Here’s what he had to say about his phone call with Stewart:

Ironically, it ended up benefitting Jon Stewart since things falling through with Hasan Minhaj paved the way for him to return to his old Daily Show stomping grounds on a part-time basis. Minhaj even joked in May about how he ended up saving a “dying institution.” Although things didn’t work out for him on The Daily Show, he certainly isn’t struggling to same in the spotlight. Along with his continued comedy work, Minhaj most recently starred opposite Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni in It Ends With Us, and he’ll be seen playing a tech CEO as a member of the Tron: Ares cast, which opens October 10 on the 2025 movies schedule.

Meanwhile, The Daily Show continues to air Monday-Thursday at 11 pm ET on Comedy Central, with episodes becoming available to stream afterwards with a Paramount+ subscription. Jon Stewart will continue his part-time hosting for the rest of the year, but it remains to be seen if a new permanent host will finally be selected in 2025 or if the series will continue cycling through various people.

When Jon Stewart exited The Daily Show back in 2015, it was naturally assumed that we’d never see him behind that particular anchor desk ever again. But back in February, Stewart returned to the Comedy Central series to resume hosting on Monday nights on the 2024 TV schedule. This surprising move followed a few months after it had been reported that former Daily Show correspondent Hasan Minhaj was the frontrunner to become the new host. The comedian has now joked about him losing out on that gig led to Stewart returning, resulting in him saving “a dying institution.”

Hasan Minhaj hosted a showcase of various comedians at the Netflix is a Joke comedy festival on Thursday (via Variety), which included current Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng, who joked, “I’m surprised that Hasan’s able to do this show. I guess ‘cancelling’ is not what it used to be.” Minhaj stood in the audience and amusingly heckled Chieng, joking about him of planting the story that led to him failing to secure The Daily Show hosting job. He then said:

Hasan Minhaj would later upload a video in October responding to The New Yorker’s allegations and breaking down what he found “needlessly misleading” from it, but by that point, he was reportedly “suddenly seen to be a liability.” Then by late January 2024, Jon Stewart was announced to return, and in a way, Minhaj is correct that he indirectly played a role in The Daily Show’s current success. Stewart’s first episode back, which aired on February 12, netted more than 3 million viewers in Nielsen’s Live+3 numbers, and was #1 across all cable. This was the show’s highest viewership since Stewart’s “last” episode in 2015, and in the weeks since, his Monday episodes have continued to perform well in viewership.

So while it’s a shame that Hasan Minhaj didn’t get to become The Daily Show’s new permanent host as expected, at least he can poke fun at what happened and boldly “claim” about how he paved the way for Jon Stewart to come back and breathe new life into the series. While there was once a time when a new permanent host of The Daily Show was supposed to be sitting behind the anchor desk by this point (apparently Hasan Minhaj came close to landing the job), that obviously still hasn’t happened. Instead, Jon Stewart has returned to the Comedy Central program to host on Mondays through the election year, and the remainder of the week is hosted by one of the show’s correspondents. Stewart, of course, previously hosted The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015 to great success, and his return to his old stomping grounds comes following the end of his Apple TV+ series The Problem with Jon Stewart after just two seasons.

At the time of this writing, it’s been five weeks since Stewart’s new run on The Daily Show (which can be streamed with a Paramount+ subscription) began. So how are things going so far? That’s what we’re here to break down, both in terns of the public’s thoughts and hard numbers. Starting off, though, I need to give my two cents on the subject.

My Thoughts

I began watching The Daily Show with regularity in 2006, meaning Jon Stewart was a integral part of my TV-viewing life for nearly a decade. He was one of my favorite comedic talents in my high school and college years, with his brand of humor easily rubbing off on me, and I’ll fully admit that I got a little emotional watching the final episode of his original tenure back on August 6, 2015. So I was pretty excited to learn in January that Stewart was returning to host on a part-time basis, although I still think the show should finally hire a new, full-time host in 2025.

So far, I’ve been impressed with how Stewart’s been performing on Monday nights. Even after having been gone from The Daily Show almost a decade, it feels like old times, and he hasn’t missed a beat.  That’s not to say I agree with everything he has to say politically, but the man is still a maestro when it comes to mixing humor with insightful commentary on current events. I welcome seeing the correspondents continue to guest host, but I wouldn’t mind if Stewart decided he wanted to host an additional night each week.

What Fans Are Saying

Still, I’m just one person; what do others think about Jon Stewart’s return to The Daily Show? You’re welcome to look around online to see what various TV critics have written on the subject, but as far as general chatter on social media goes, well, that depends on where you align politically. There are certainly plenty of people who are enjoying Stewart being back too, whereas others aren’t too jazzed about it, whether it’s because they align more conservatively or they already disagree with one or more of his positions that he’s talked about over the last few weeks. Here are some examples:

Comedy is subjective, especially when it’s politically-oriented, so it’s not like Jon Stewart’s Daily Show return was ever going to be welcomed across the spectrum. Still, overall it seems like there are more positive thoughts over him back back then negative ones, so it’s safe to say he’s off to a good start on the critical front.

The Ratings

Reception is one thing, but what about the stats about the people watching? Well, as far as being tuning into the main broadcasts go, Jon Stewart’s return on February 12 was quite strong, with Deadline reporting that the episode averaged more than 3 million viewers in Nielsen’s Live+3 numbers, and was #1 across all cable. For comparison, according to THR, Trevor Noah’s final episode of The Daily Show received 441,500 viewers. It’s also worth noting that accounting for three-day DVR playback, Jon Stewart’s final Daily Show episode from 2015 netted 5.1 million viewers, per Variety. But hey, that was arguably a bigger special occasion and from a time when streaming wasn’t as big a deal, so that bigger figure is to be expected.

Stewart is also looping more viewers to The Daily Show on Mondays compared to the rest of the week. For example, the March 4th episode was watched by roughly 918,000 viewers, as shared by SpoilerTV, whereas the rest of the week, which was hosted by correspondent Ronny Chieng, landed 420,000 on Tuesday, 479,000 on Wednesday and 423,000 on Thursday. Stewart’s latest episode, i.e. March 11, collected 970,000 viewers.

So overall, it’s fair to say that Jon Stewart second go-around at The Daily Show has gotten off to a strong start, and we have a lot more to look forward to from him. At the very least, we can expect him to stay behind the anchor desk until the week of Monday, November 4, though with Election Day happening the day after, I imagine Stewart will make an exception and appear on the Tuesday episode too. But given that The Daily Show takes off for the rest of the year in early-mid December, don’t be surprised if Stewart sticks around for the year’s final episodes too.

After that, Comedy Central will either have to renew its efforts to search for a new permanent Daily Show host or keep this long guest host run going longer without Jon Stewart involved. Either way, we’ll keep passing along updates on how things are going at The Daily Show amidst our coverage of other programming on the 2024 TV schedule.

The man who made The Daily Show a cultural phenomenon has returned. Jon Stewart, who left the political satire show in 2015, is now back hosting the Comedy Central show on Mondays until it nails down a permanent host. His return was welcomed with open arms, and now some of his peers are reflecting on what Jon Stewart’s Daily Show meant for their own projects. Among those peers is Seth Meyers who recently admitted to feeling indebted to the comedian due to the heavy amount of influence he had on Late Night with Seth Meyers.  

Meyers recently sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about Late Night as the show approaches its 10th anniversary. The talk show host reflected on how the show has evolved since its debut in 2014, and how he feels about his future behind the desk. He also doled out praise to his fellow hosts, including Jon Stewart, who the SNL vet feels set a precedent for late-night hosts that infused political satire into their shows. Speaking to this point, Meyers said:SNL alum said: 

Many have praised Jon Stewart for what he did on The Daily Show during his tenure, and the show is responsible in many ways for the careers of comedians like Stephen Colbert and John Oliver. Both have taken after Stewart with their scathing, but also very funny, commentary on politics and problems affecting our world today. Meyers has done the same, with segments like "A Closer Look," which have given the host an opportunity to take a deep dive into a particular issue and insert his own commentary. 

Meyers, as well as Oliver and Colbert, certainly have their own voices, but the Stewart influence can not be denied. 

Having Stewart return to The Daily Show reminded me of the razor-sharp wit that helped Americans process the most complex political and social issues, and his return has been met with praise. Some have expressed a desire for the show to find a permanent host, but it doesn’t seem like Comedy Central feels the need to officially replace Trevor Noah anytime soon. 

One can not deny that even in the short amount of time Stewart has been back on air, he has demonstrated why he is so beloved. Meyers is also happy to have him back, and he has seen the show since his return, saying:

Since the cancellation of The Problem with Jon Stewart on AppleTV+, it seems like the host has no reason to give up the Monday slot, so fans can look forward to seeing the host every week for a while. As for Seth Meyers, his late-night show will likely continue long past its ten-year anniversary celebration. His show remains unique, taking satirical influence from Stewart, and injecting some of the formal techniques Meyers learned from his time at SNL to make the traditional format his own. He may have been influenced by Jon Stewart, but many voices in the future will likely take their influence from Seth Meyers and his impact on the culture.

Naturally this news excited many people who enjoyed the man’s original tenure, and in addition to reflecting on his return to The Daily Show, Stewart revealed the one thing that didn’t work out so well the first time around.

On the subject of if it’s fair to say he’s “hoping to have an influence on politics” during his second round hosting The Daily Show, Jon Stewart started off during this segment of his CBS Mornings interview by saying he’s hoping to have a “catharsis,” a way to “comment on things” and express these comments in a way that people hopefully “enjoy.” He continued:

While I don’t necessarily agree with Jon Stewart that The Daily Show wasn’t influential when he was sitting behind the anchor’s desk, he’s certainly correct he’s done more when it comes to spreading direct influence since leaving the show, including advocating for 9/11 first responders. So while Stewart’s second go-around at hosting comes during an especially important election year, he doesn’t expect that he’ll be more influential this time around given his past experience. Rather, his latest Daily Show hosting stint will continue with amplifying the voices of the people doing the hard work spreading awareness for their various causes… and, you know, do so in funny ways.

Jon Stewart’s return to The Daily Show comes several months after Apple TV+ cancelled The Problem with Jon Stewart, which reportedly stemmed from the host and his team getting into “creative disagreements” with the company over certain topics they wanted to cover. Regarding The Daily Show, following Trevor Noah’s departure in late 2022 after seven years of hosting, 2023 featured a rotating lineup of guests hosts, and originally the plan was to hire a new permanent host by the end of the year. Hasan Minhaj reportedly came close to landing the gig, but those plans fell through by autumn. So now with Jon Stewart hosting Mondays and correspondents/previous guests hosts holding down the fort for the rest of the week, it won’t be until 2025 that the search for a new permanent host resumes.

Between this and the Comedy Central program’s various correspondents hosting Tuesday through Thursday, this means that the search for a permanent host following Trevor Noah’s exit in December 2022 has been pushed back for roughly another year. That said, more details have now emerged about close Hasan Minhaj came to landing the host gig prior to Stewart’s recruitment. 

Minhaj, who was a correspondent on The Daily Show from 2014 to 2018, and guest hosted on the week of February 27, 2023, was reportedly the frontrunner to succeed Noah at the beginning of August 2023. According to THR, the deal for him to become the new host was “all but done by late summer,” and had the hiring gone through, this would have marked Minhaj’s return the TV talk show host space following the cancellation of his Netflix show Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj in 2020. So what went wrong?

Well, for one thing, both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes sidelined plans to relaunch The Daily Show with a new host in September 2023. However, regarding Minhaj specifically, the comedian was hit with controversy that very month when a New Yorker article was published claiming that he’d embellished or simply made up stories for his standup act. Minhaj described the story “needlessly misleading” to THR shortly thereafter, and on October 26, 2023, he uploaded a detailed video response to The New Yorker’s allegations.

By that point though, Hasan Minhaj was “suddenly seen to be a liability,” resulting in the search for the new Daily Show host widening again. Kal Penn, another guest host from 2023, was also reportedly under heavy consideration for the job around the same time Minhaj’s was said to be the top choice, and Variety has said that “executives tried to interest” John Mulaney in becoming the new permanent host. Meanwhile, correspondent Roy Wood Jr. departed The Daily Show last October once it became clear he wouldn’t be offered the hosting job, and he was seen during the Emmys broadcast earlier this month mouthing, “Please hire a host.”

Which brings us to January 24, when Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios CEO Chris McCarthy brought Jon Stewart out to The Daily Show’s staff, and the public learned about this status quo change immediately afterwards. Even ahead of the Stewart news, it was reported that The Daily Show would “rely heavily” on its team of correspondents throughout 2024. Following the 2024 election, we’ll just have to wait and see how Comedy Central intends to handle the host situation in 2025. Who knows, maybe by that point they’ll be willing to consider Hasan Minhaj again if the controversy is no being talked about.

The Daily Show still does not know who will take over for Trevor Noah full-time, which is a problem. However, fans of the Comedy Central series did get some great news when it was announced that Jon Stewart will be returning to the anchor's chair to lead the program on Mondays.

Now, this news about Stewart is fantastic, and I can't wait to see the longtime host of The Daily Show back behind the news desk. However, we seriously need to pick a full-time host people, we've been waiting for a very long time.

Jon Stewart Is Returning To Host The Monday Episodes Of The Daily Show 

Following months and months of searching and temporary hosts after Trevor Noah left The Daily Show in 2022, Comedy Central decided to bring back Jon Stewart to lead the series on Monday nights throughout the 2024 TV schedule, and he's set to executive produce too. According to Variety, along with leading the Monday episodes through the election year, there's also potential for him to extend his "oversight role" through 2025.

President and CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios Chris McCarthy commented on Stewart’s return, saying:

Along with this very formal statement, Jon Stewart took to X to share his on-brand and humorous thoughts about the news, writing:

Considering Stewart’s long history with The Daily Show – he started leading it in 1999 and left in 2015 with Trevor Noah taking over the hosting gig next – and the fact that his show The Problem with Jon Stewart ended last November, this is massive news. And I’m sure fans of the series are stoked to have him back; I know I am. 

However, hosting on Mondays, so who will be behind the desk the rest of the week, and when will we finally get a permanent host?

While This Is Exciting, The Daily Show Really Needs To Pick A Full-Time Host

Along with Jon Stewart returning for Monday episodes, it’s been reported that The Daily Show will also rely on its correspondents and previous guest hosts to make their episodes. Of course, it’s fun to see the longtime cast taking on a new challenge on the Comedy Central staple. However, for decades, this series has been led by one person, and it feels really odd that no one has been hired yet.

There have been whispers about Noah’s successor though. At one point it was alleged that Hasan Minhaj could take over The Daily Show. Then, it was reported that Kal Penn was in the running to take over. However, there’s been no serious movement when it comes to actually hiring a new face for the iconic series.

As a fan who was introduced to both Stewart and Noah through The Daily Show, I’d love to see a comedian get the chance to find the success they have. It’s nice to see a familiar face night after night on TV, and I’m truly stoked that we’ll get that on Mondays as the iconic Jon Stewart comes back. But, his comeback is not permanent. I would love them to find someone who will lead every episode of the series for the foreseeable future and bring us into a new era of The Daily Show.

Jon Stewart will begin hosting the Monday shows starting on February 12. While he does that, which is very exciting might I add, I'll be waiting for The Daily Show to pick a full-time host, and watching reruns of his and Trevor Noah’s episodes with a Paramount+ subscription.

Back in December 2022, seven years after he succeeded Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah exited the Comedy Central program. Over the course of 2023, various guests hosts sat in his place at the anchor desk, ranging from major celebrities to the show’s correspondents, but eventually a permanent host was going to be selected to take over. Well, apparently that’s not the plan for the foreseeable future, and I’m confused by this turn of events.

According to Variety, when The Daily Show returns from its hiatus, it will “rely heavily on a team of correspondents to lead each night.” It’s unclear if the “final assemblage of talent” has been assembled yet, but the show’s current lineup of correspondents includes Ronny Chieng, Desi Lydia, Michael Kosta, Dulcé Sloan, Troy Iwata and Grace Kuhlenschmidt, along with Lewis Black and Jordan Klepper being classified as contributors. Roy Wood Jr. left The Daily Show back in October after deciding that eight years was a “good run” as a correspondent, and it was only a few days ago he was seen mouthing “Please hire a host” at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Additionally, it was mentioned that past celebrities who guest hosted The Daily Show in 2023 could be called back for more appearances, but for now, the plan is to spotlight the correspondents and place the search for a permanent host on the back burner indefinitely. Instead, Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global’s president, as reportedly said the satirical news program will be relying more on a “newsroom” concept going forward. Comedy Central also announced after the Emmys that it will be “sharing its plans for The Daily Show’s next chapter” sometime next week.

As someone who’s been watching The Daily Show for almost 20 years, I find the decision to not to pick a permanent host baffling. To be fair, it is noted in Variety’s report that this move will likely save money. So I can understand this as a cost-cutting measure, particularly since the show only pulled in under $19 million in ad revenue in 2023, a sharp decrease from $39.9 million in 2022. I also understand that finding a permanent host was sidelined when the series when on an extended break last year because of the writers strike, though the search was reportedly widening in September.

But from a purely creative standpoint, not tapping someone to permanently succeed Trevor Noah just feels too weird. Yes, the correspondents are an integral part of this show and it’s good to occasionally see them stretch their comedy muscles at that news desk, but there’s something to be said about someone consistently sitting there. Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah’s profiles got significant boosts from their tenures on The Daily Show, it’d be nice if someone else could experience such success. 

There was a time when Hasan Minhaj was allegedly the frontrunner to take over hosting The Daily Show, and even Kal Penn was reportedly under consideration for the job. And while the idea of hiring a new permanent host hasn’t been taken off the table completely (there’s been speculation that John Mulaney was approached in the “recent past”), as we continue into 2024, get used to continuing to see the show’s correspondents leading the charge.

The Daily Show is still in an interesting position over a year after the departure of its most recent host, Trevor Noah. As of this writing, Comedy Central has still yet to land on a permanent replacement for Noah, and various guest presenters have been brought in during the interim. One person who was largely viewed as a prime candidate for the job was Roy Wood Jr., a longtime writer and correspondent on the program. Wood has since left the program but still seems eager for the talk show to find a new lead. On that note, he was seen mouthing “Please hire a host” when Noah accepted an Emmy for the show, and Wood has since responded. 

During the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards, The Daily Show managed to take home the prize for Outstanding Talk Series. Many seemed focused on Trevor Noah’s acceptance speech, in which he joked that he knew the show could win if HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver was not in the category. However, an astute social media user noticed that Roy Wood Jr. – who was among the crew that stood behind Noah on stage – lip synced the previously mentioned phrase. When called out for the sly moment, Wood dropped a brief, but cheeky response on X: 

Social media commentators will certainly keep you on your toes, that’s for sure. It’s honestly pretty impressive just how often some viewers manage to pick up on small details. If I’m being completely honest, I totally missed what the comedian did after his former show became one of the 75th Emmy Awards winners. His actions may be humorous on the surface, yet they also indicate the feelings of so many who would like the program to find a new host. 

Over the past few months, it was reported that the network was conducting a wide search for the next person to sit in the coveted host’s chair. Comedian Hasan Minhaj had reportedly emerged as a frontrunner for the Daily Show job by August 2023. However, plans apparently changed after Minhaj was embroiled in a controversy, which saw him accused of embellishing parts of his personal life in his comedy routines. 

Roy Wood Jr., who was on the show from 2015 to 2023, was largely viewed as the heir apparent to Trevor Noah. Also an actor, Wood is known for his sharp writing and forward delivery, which was present when he roasted “a-holes” at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 2023. Wood discussed the possibility of hosting the long-running political chat show in late 2022. At the time, he acknowledged that one “can’t say no to an opportunity like that” but also admitted that he hadn’t given it too much thought. 

There’s currently no way to tell who just might be tapped by the network to take on the position that was once held by Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah. There are two things that can be said at this moment, though. The first is that whoever winds up with the job is going to have some massive shoes to fill. And the second is that after Roy Wood Jr.’s comments, it appears that more than a few people are still invested in this talent search. We’ll see if they stay “chill” while the decision is made.

It’s been over five full months since the last new episode of The Daily Show aired, as it ceased production once the writers strike began. However, with the strike now over, the Comedy Central program is just a few days away from returning to the air like so many other late night shows. Ahead of the big return, the new guest host lineup has been revealed, and it includes some returning faces.

The Daily Show correspondent Michael Costa will kick things off by sitting behind the anchor desk starting on Monday, October 16, and the official announcement revealed that both Leslie Jones and Sarah Silverman will also be back, with the former having previously hosted from January 17-19, and the latter following from February 13-16. Desus Nice, Charlemagne The God and Michelle Wolf had all been slated to guest host The Daily Show this past summer, but those plans were scrapped once the writers strike began. It’s good to see that that they were rescheduled now that the series is back up and running, and those of you who enjoyed Leslie Jones and Sarah Silverman hosting earlier this year can now look forward to more of their comedic chops on display on The Daily Show’s set. For those wondering what “The Daily Show Team Takeover” entails on the week of November 20th, the official Comedy Central announcement statement states that there will be “tag team anchoring,” with more details to follow.

This news follows a week after correspondent Roy Wood Jr. said that he was leaving The Daily Show, although he did admit he’d be swayed into staying if he was chosen to be the permanent host. On that note, while originally the goal was for Trevor Noah’s successor to be announced this fall, obviously the writers strike necessitated such plans to be tabled. So for now, we’re still in this guest host period, and reportedly the new permanent host will now be announced sometime in early 2024. While Hasan Minhaj was once reportedly the frontrunner for the job, The Daily Show is now said to be widening its search again, although the comedian is still in the running.

Shockingly enough, it’s been nearly a year since comedian Trevor Noah stepped down from his run as the host of The Daily Show, and in a situation that echoes the issues Jeopardy! had following Alex Trebek’s death, the Comedy Central mainstay has yet to cement a permanent replacement. One of the early fan-favorites who was thought to be a major contender to take over the desk was Roy Wood Jr., who first signed on as a correspondent back in 2015 when Noah first replaced Jon Stewart. Those hopes seem to be dying on the vine, however, as Wood says he’s set to make his Daily Show exit. Say it ain’t so, Ro…y!

Roy Wood Jr. opened up about his decision to leave the cable hit with NPR, explaining that it’s not doing his career a whole lot of good to stick around a TV gig that isn’t actively pushing him higher up the call sheet, as it were. Here’s how he put it: 

Hard to argue with that kind of logic, especially since the WGA strike and SAG-AFTRA strike brought the industry to a grinding halt throughout the summer, which no doubt gave Wood more time to think about what his future options are. The hilarious stand-up star revealed that he's already alerted his bosses at Comedy Central of the decision, but that at the time of the interview, he had not brought he news up with anyone at The Daily Show proper. Which technically means there could still be time for the show's producers to make the move to secure him as the host for the long run.

Because even though he wants to bow out, Roy Wood Jr. says he's not in the know about who the top options are to take over the host position, which presumably shifted somewhat after Hasan Minhaj went from major frontrunner to difficult choice after he admitted to embellishing personal stories for his stand-up routines. And if it turns out he IS one of the comedians being considered? He might be swayed into saying yes. In his words:

Wood spoke in the past about possibly landing the host job as Trevor Noah's replacement, and if he sounds willing to still be interested after ten months of seeking out other candidates, take him up on it! The dude clearly knows the job, and has proven his skills as a guest host in the interim. Which isn't to say that other potential options like Kal Penn aren't worthy of taking over, but I just want it to be Wood's time to shine. 

Alas, if this statement from Comedy Central is anything to go on, Roy Wood Jr. is already being viewed as a former employee:

This December will mark one year since Trevor Noah exited The Daily Show, and we still have no idea who will take over hosting duties from him permanently. There’s been no shortage of candidates thrown out though, including Hasan Minhaj, who was reported to be the frontrunner for the job in early August. However, following the controversy surrounding the comedian’s stand-up material, word’s come in that The Daily Show is back to widening its search for a host.

In case you missed it, Minhaj caught heat recently from a New Yorker article that shared he embellished details in his personal life for his routines. As reported by Variety, Paramount Global is now “considering a wider array of candidates” to take over The Daily Show, although it’s unclear if this is directly in response to the new details about Minhaj that have come to light or if that’s just coincidental timing. It was also noted that Minhaj, who was a correspondent on the Comedy Central series during Jon Stewart’s tenure and guest-hosted the show for a week in March, is not out of the mix entirely for succeeding Noah on The Daily Show, it’s just now there’s a renewed effort with looking at other people.

To be fair, shortly after Hasan Minhaj was said to be in contention for sitting behind the news desk on a permanent basis, it was reported that fellow guest host Kal Penn was also in the running. So it’s not like the powers-that-be at The Daily Show and Paramount Global ever settled on Minhaj, but now it appears that he’s lost his frontrunner status. Still, one would imagine he has a leg up on much of the competition given that after he left The Daily Show in 2018, he hosted Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj on Netflix.

The Daily Show has been on hiatus since May 1 because of the writers strike, with correspondent Dulcé Sloan being the final in a line of guest hosts that launched with Leslie Jones in mid-January, though Sloan only hosted the one night. The Daily Show is now set to resume airing on Monday, October 16, and a new group of guest hosts to keep this ship running. However, the plan is now for the new permanent host to be ready to go by sometime in 2024, ahead of the presidential election.

Prior to the writers strike, people like current Daily Show correspondents/contributors Michael Kosta, Ronny Chieng and Lewis Black, as well as Charlemagne The God, Michelle Wolf as Desus Nice, were lined up to guest host The Daily Show, but it hasn’t been revealed whether any of them will be slotted back in once the show starts up again. We’ll let you know if that ends ups being the case, as well as what new guests hosts are brought in and, of course, who ultimately succeeds Trevor Noah, whether it’s Hasan Minhaj or someone else.

It may be hard to believe, but it’s been almost a year since Trevor Noah announced his exit from The Daily Show. The comedian hosted the satirical talk show for seven years and officially departed his post in December 2022. In recent months, the political and social commentary-fueled talk show has been trying to find a new permanent host and has been utilizing a number of guest hosts. All the while, Noah has been pursuing other endeavors. And based on his exploits, one gets the feeling that he doesn't plan on slowing down any time soon.

What Trevor Noah Said About His Future When He Departed The Daily Show

When Trevor Noah made his exit announcement, he expressed interest in touring again as a stand-up comedian. Due to his obligations to the show, he hadn’t really had time to focus on his comedy. So just a month after leaving The Daily Show, Noah hit the road on his Off the Record Tour. When initially discussing his post-talk show intentions, the star said the following:

As mentioned above, the Coming 2 America alum also wanted to spend more time with his family in South Africa. He mentioned that he wanted to produce and operate behind the camera and was “working on different ideas.” It sounded like he had a lot planned prior to his exit. It would now seem nearly a year later, that his dreams are mostly coming true, as he's been quite productive.

What Trevor Noah Is Up To Now

At present, the former host is continuing to tour. According to StubHub, he has dates lined up in South Africa, India, Dubai, the US, and the UK through April, with several of them rescheduled from earlier this year. People also exclusively shared the cover for the star's upcoming book, Into the Uncut Grass. It’s described as a “moving modern fable” that's for readers of all ages. It is set to release in bookstores on Halloween.

As if a book and a tour weren’t enough, Trevor Noah is still involved in the TV business as well. E! News reported back in May that he's executive-producing a U.S. version of the British late-night series, Mock the Week, for Amazon Freevee. The series will reportedly include stand-up comedy, panels, improvised games, and more. It will also feature two teams of comedians going head-to-head while discussing news, pop culture, and world events. As of now, updates on the program have been scarce and, given on that fun description, one would hope that the show arrives sooner rather than later.

It’s been weird watching the Comedy Central talk show without Trevor Noah, and one hopes The Daily Show will find someone to take over on a full-time basis soon. It seems Hasan Minhaj may be in the running, along with a few other pretty good choices. All the while, I'm glad to see Noah is still thriving and doing what he aimed to do. It wouldn’t be surprising if more were to come from him in the future, so fans may want to keep their eyes peeled for developments on that end.

On December 8, 2022, Trevor Noah departed The Daily Show after seven years, having been hired to succeed Jon Stewart as its host in 2015. From January 2023 up until the writers strike began in May, the Comedy Central series kept afloat by bringing in various guest hosts, but naturally a permanent successor for Noah eventually needs to be hired. Earlier this week, it was said that Daily Show alum Hasan Minhaj could potentially score the job, and now there’s word that another replacement is in the running.

Actor Kal Penn, whose shown off his comedic chops in the Harold & Kumar film series, among other projects, is now being looked to take over The Daily Show, according to The Wrap. However, this doesn’t mean he has an edge over Minhaj now. An unnamed source allegedly “close to the decision-making process” informed the publication that they are among the “four leading candidates” to become The Daily Show’s new host, though the other two finalists weren’t identified. 

Like Minhaj, Penn was one of The Daily Show’s guest hosts earlier this year, with his tenure lasting from March 13-16, and his first night seeing him interview President Joe Biden. Penn’s there recent credits include starring in The Santa Clauses Season 1 as Simon Choksi, playing Shaan Tripathi in the short-lived CBS series Clarice and appearing as Mac Marzara in American Horror Story: NYC. Additionally, Penn has political experience from when he worked as Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs during the Obama administration.

So with his professional background and that brief round of guest hosting, Kal Penn is certainly qualified enough to become the new face of The Daily Show. However, obviously such a time-intensive position would significantly limit the amount of roles he’d be able to play going forward. So if Penn is indeed approached to succeed Trevor Noah, he’ll need to weigh the pros and cons carefully before reaching a decision.

As for when we’ll learn whether Penn, Hasan Minhaj or someone else becomes The Daily Show’s new permanent host, that’s hard to say. It’d originally been reported that the plan was for the next host to take over sometime in fall 2023, but with the series still on hiatus due to the writers strike, that goal may no longer be feasible. Of course, Comedy Central could still just announce who the successor is in the coming weeks, but we may have to wait longer before we actually see them sitting at the anchor desk. Correspondent Roy Wood Jr. has also reportedly been eyed for the position.

The Daily Show is desperately in need of a host. Trevor Noah said goodbye to America and the coveted host role in September after being tapped to take over for Jon Stewart in 2015. The departure was surprising for many audiences, and behind-the-scenes personnel, who felt blindsided by the hosts' abrupt exit. After careful deliberation, it seems like the well-loved Comedy Central staple has finally found its front runner, and it shouldn’t be surprising to fans.

According to a report from Variety, comedina/actor Hasan Minhaj is being eyed to take over the role. Minhaj was one of the many guest hosts who filled in for Noah as the show continued without a permanent host. The comedian has experience hosting a political satire role, as he had his own show on Netflix called Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, which ran for six seasons. His Daily Show experience is also abundant, as he served as a correspondent under both Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah. 

For Daily Show fans, Minhaj was a staple and gained quick popularity amongst avid viewers. He rose to public prominence when he was selected to give a speech at the 2017 White House Correspondents Dinner during a time of extreme political controversy. The speech was viewed by millions, with many lauding his handling of the situations. Since the speech, the comedian has also had two very popular comedy specials: Homecoming King and The King’s Jester, both of which are available with a Netflix subscription.

While Minhaj has emerged as the front runner, he has not been the only name floated around in the months following Noah’s departure. Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. has also circled the position, and is still in the conversation. Additionally, correspondent Jessica Williams was named as a possible successor, however the Two Dope Queens star's commitment to acting may prevent her from taking over the chair. Williams currently stars alongside Jason Segal and Harrison Ford in the hit AppleTV+ show, Shrinking. 

While nothing is official quite yet, Minhaj’s status as a frontrunner is something all Daily Show fans should be excited about. He has been a friend of the show for a while now, and has proved himself as a unique political mind and is able to infuse his sense of humor into topical issues. He is a part of the long held tradition of getting content banned in other countries for his scathing commentary, and has a unique voice that will likely update the longstanding variety show, while also tonally being consistent with his predecessors. We’ll have to wait and see if the comedy star takes up the mantle.

This year’s White House Correspondents Dinner arguably happened at a perfectly fitting time for headlining comedian and Daily Show royalty Roy Wood Jr., as it happened very soon after Fox News split ways with Tucker Carlson, as well as after CNN terminated Don Lemon’s contract. Understandably, that gave Wood even more material than he would have already had for his 30-minute spot, and he used that advantage to deliver some fiery roasts for the currently unemployed news anchors.

Roy Wood Jr. could potentially take over as permanent Daily Show host if asked, having previously joined the rotating slate of guest hosts in the wake of Trevor Noah’s absence, and he further proved how excellent he is at winning over a crowd during the White House dinner. Even when that crowd is already preconfigured to laugh at political humor. He brought up what he dubbed the “elephant” in the room as he started off his time slot, as televised on C-SPAN:

Reginald VelJohnson, who recently returned to Sitcom Dad status for a Geico ad, probably wouldn’t be the TV talent many would expect to jump on stage and rail on Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon. And even if he was, he probably wouldn’t be equipped with the zingers that Roy Wood Jr. had. Here’s how he first delved into the Fox News of it all:

Wood then joked about how he couldn't remember which reality show Vanderpump Rules was, and joked about it being the white version of BMF, before going for a more racially sharpened punchline. 

The longtime Daily Show comic brought President Joe Biden into his jokes quite a few times during his 30 minutes or so on stage, but perhaps this was the biggest barb where Biden wasn't Wood's direct target. 

Which earned the below reaction from the POTUS:

Soon after, Roy Wood Jr. joked that Tucker Carlson's firing being somewhat rare for Fox News, in that it wasn't largely tied to harsh treatment of a woman, and then shifted his aim over to fellow ousted cable newsman Don Lemon, who is reportedly getting prepped for a possible legal battle over the millions still left on his contract. Wood continued:

That joke drew possibly the biggest laugh of any aimed at the two outgoing anchors, and that's as much a stellar comedic set-up as it is a burn on Don Lemon, even though it's indeed a great jab. 

Roy Wood Jr. did vaguely address Lemon's on-air controversy involving Nikki Haley, referring to it as him saying "a couple of women were raggedy to their face." But Wood invoked another uncomfortably scandalous incident, and the offending journalist, when dunking on Lemon. 

Everybody remembers Jeffrey Toobin, right? He's the CNN and New Yorker guy who...yeah, that's right...while on camera with co-workers. Not the most timely reference to make, but then time isn't really the main issue there. 

Currently, Tucker Carlson is rumored to be sparking a mega-offer from Newsmax, even if he probably can't take any jobs while still under any contractual non-compete clauses. The same goes for Don Lemon, who was also reportedly being courted-via-conversation by Newsmax. But as Lemon put it when asked about his future, he's doing just "great."

Could Roy Wood Jr., Tucker Carlson, and Don Lemon ever share the screen or stage together? Probably not, but one can certainly imagine how loud that room would get, regardless of its size.

Al Franken was a writer and performer on Saturday Night Live during a point in time that many would consider to be when the show peaked. In a career turn that some may consider to be odd, he later served as a United States Senator for nearly a decade. This mix of experience in both comedy and politics makes him something of an expert when the two overlap, which is why we’ll have to take his word for it when he tells us that the funniest senator is none other than Republican Lindsey Graham.

For the perfect overlap of both comedy and politics, Franken fit in quite nicely during his stint hosting Comedy Central’s The Daily Show last week. I was able to sit down with him in anticipation of the big week, and when I asked if he was an anomaly in bringing comedy to United States politics, he volunteered the following information:

While some may be surprised, Al Franken certainly knows what he’s talking about. After all, David Letterman called him one of the three funniest comedians. While he and Lindsey Graham may not see eye-to-eye on everything politically, Franken is able to look past that and be honest about the senator’s humor. Otherwise, he would have gone with a Democrat for the coveted title of “funniest senator.” Clearly he doesn’t hold too many personal grudges, as he also chose Sarah Silverman as his pick to replace Trevor Noah on The Daily Show even though she once stabbed him in the head on the set of SNL. 

Al Franken went on to give one specific example of a classic Lindsey Graham zinger:

That’s not a bad joke, not bad at all. The two must have become pretty good friends during their time together in the Senate, as Graham even joined him on The Daily Show. If you really watch and give the senator a chance, you can clearly see why Franken finds him to be so funny in a sea of “humorless” politicians:

While the way that The Daily Show has handled Trevor Noah’s exit is unusual, these guest-hosting stints have been a lot of fun. There have been many rumors regarding potential candidates to replace Noah permanently, but as of this writing, we’re unsure which direction the show will go in. For this week, comedy legend John Leguizamo will be gracing the famous desk, and you can catch new episodes of The Daily Show on Comedy Central at 11 pm ET.

Last December, after seven years of hosting The Daily Show following Jon Stewart’s exit, Trevor Noah departed the Comedy Central satirical news program. However, while Noah’s tenure began just a few weeks after Stewart’s grand farewell, there’s still no word on who will permanently take over in Noah’s place. Instead, the series has been going through guests hosts since mid-January, and the next round of these individuals has been announced.

Following the end of Saturday Night Live alum and former United DStates senator Al Franken’s time sitting at the anchor desk, and ahead of Violent Night’s John Leguizamo coming in next week, The Daily Show has revealed that the next round of guests hosts will be comprised of people who work on the series on corespondents or contributors. Roy Wood Jr. will kick things off from April 3-6, followed by Jordan Klepper from April 17-20, Desi Lydic from April 24-27, Dulcé Sloan from May 1-4 and Michael Kosta from May 8-11. Additionally, Lewis Black and Ronny Chieng are also confirmed to guest host, but their weeks haven’t been unveiled yet.

Along with Al Franken and John Leguizamo, these seven individuals follow behind people like Leslie Jones (who was the first to guest host post-Trevor Noah leaving), Wanda Sykes, Chelsea Handler, D.L. Hughley, Sarah Silverman, Hasan Manhaj (who worked on The Daily Show from 2014 to 2018) Marlon Wayans and Kal Penn. This new lineup also comprises the core group of talent that worked with Trevor Noah during his run as host.

As for how the search is going for someone to permanently succeed Trevor Noah, it had previously been said a successor will likely take over in fall 2023. Deadline has also heard that Comedy Central is reportedly still considering shifting The Daily Show over to “hosting duos and trios” rather than keeping it to just one person. As such, expect more guest shows to be announced for the summer, although I imagine that the series will take off either a month or two prior to when the shift to the new permanent host/format takes place.

For his part, Roy Wood Jr. said around the time Trevor Noah left The Daily Show that while “you can’t say no to an opportunity” like becoming the series’ permanent host, he also acknowledged that one would “have to sit and assess what you want to do creatively,” and at that point, he hadn’t thought about it yet. Ahead of his time hosting, Al Franken told CinemaBlend that he’d like to see Sarah Silverman permanently take over as host. One person we can safely rule out of the running is Jessica Williams, who was a correspondent from 2012 to 2016, but is “really happy” with where her career is going now.

Following the end of Trevor Noah’s seven-year stint on The Daily Show, Comedy Central is yet to announce a full-time replacement for the comedian. Instead, it's handled these last few months in a manner that some might consider to be unusual: by having a series of guest hosts fill in weekly at the desk made famous by Jon Stewart. So far comedy stars like Leslie Jones, Kal Penn, and Sarah Silverman. Now, for the week of March 20th, the seat will be filled by none other than SNL legend and former United States Senator Al Franken. The program's mix of comedy and politics should be perfect for such a veteran, which is why I believe the powers that be should give his pick for Noah’s replacement some serious consideration.

I recently spoke with the comedian and politician in anticipation of his upcoming hosting gig. When I asked him if he has anyone in mind to take over, he enthusiastically mentioned comedian Sarah Silverman:

This is not a bad choice, not bad at all. It’s worth noting that the two of them have a history, as Al Franken was something of a mentor to Sarah Silverman during her short time on SNL in the early ‘90s. She even once accidentally stabbed him in the head. But given the fact that he’s still a big fan, there’s obviously no bad blood. Franken is also correct in saying that she did an excellent job and, in case you didn’t see her episodes yourself, Comedy Central has hooked us up with a compilation of her best moments on the show:

Of course, Al Franken clarified that hosting is a massive time commitment, and he seems very aware that a comedian of Sarah Silverman’s stature likely isn’t available for such a demanding job. She has multiple TV and film projects coming up and is always doing stand-up gigs. Also, more recently, you may have seen her as a part of the stacked cast in Mel Brooks’ and Hulu’s The History Of The World, Part II.

There are also a slew of other worthy candidates who one would assume are in contention for the job, many of whom being correspondents that have already graced the show. There was a rumor that Roy Wood Jr. was to replace Trevor Noah, and Jessica Williams has shared her thoughts on potentially taking over amid speculation. Truthfully, they all sound like viable options, but now is the time to choose -- as The Daily Show is said to return from hiatus with a new mainstay host in September.

Seven years after he was appointed by Jon Stewart to take over Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, Trevor Noah said goodbye to the program in late 2022. Noah made it clear that one of his plans after his run on the show was to get back on the road and do more stand-up. One of his opening acts is a comic named Josh Johnson, and he also happened to be a writer for Noah on The Daily Show. Through being on the road performing with the man and helping to craft his narrative voice, Johnson obviously got to know Noah pretty well, and he gave CinemaBlend the lowdown on everything he learned from working with the comic.

Josh Johnson just released his latest stand-up special Up Here Killing Myself on Peacock. I spoke with the comedian about what his inspirations were, and when I asked what lessons he learned from the years he spent with Trevor Noah, he told me the following:

Well, this certainly paints a picture of Trevor Noah as being a pretty stand-up dude (no pun intended), and in this age where the big bosses in entertainment are being called out for the unfair treatment of their employees, this is refreshing to hear. Johnson went on to specifically explain how Noah helped him craft Up Here Killing Myself by differentiating between what material is meant for a special, a tour and a show:

What a mentor! Although the two no longer work together in an official capacity, and Johnson is becoming a big enough name to headline his own shows, it sounds like he learned plenty from Noah that he can take with him as his career continues to grow. 

As for Noah, once his stint on The Daily Show ended, he returned to stand-up as promised, which is where his career began and seems to be his preferred creative outlet. Many candidates have been rumored to replace Noah on The Daily Show, including correspondents Jessica Williams and Roy Wood Jr. While no official decision has been made public, the show is still going strong, as there’s a slew of guest hosts in the meantime including Chelsea Handler, Wanda Sykes and some solid SNL vets.

The Daily Show is in a period of transition following the departure of its most recent host, Trevor Noah. Since Noah signed off in December, the Comedy Central series has been relying on a lineup of guest hosts that includes notable names like Wanda Sykes and Leslie Jones. Though the entertainers who’ve sat at the desk thus far have their merits, one still can’t help but wonder who’ll take the gig on a full-time basis. A number of names have been thrown into the discussion at this point, including former show correspondent Jessica Williams’. The actress and comedian is now sharing some thoughts on possibly taking over for Noah. 

Jessica Williams has had an interesting path in the entertainment industry, as she started her acting career with the ‘00s Nick dramedy series Just for Kicks in 2006. In 2012, she joined The Daily Show, and her sharp and quirky brand of comedy earned her a significant amount of notoriety. On paper, she seems like an ideal candidate for the hosting position. However, she’s not aiming to return to her old stomping grounds at this point, and her reasoning makes sense: 

It’s true that her career has taken off in a big way over the past several years. Since leaving the comedy news show, she’s appeared on notable series like Girls and The Twilight Zone, while also being featured in an HBO special based on her 2 Dope Queens podcast. She also has film credits under her belt in Booksmart, two Fantastic Beasts sequels and Entergalactic. Her most recent production is Apple TV+’s Shrinking, which also stars Jason Segel and Harrison Ford. Despite her blossoming career, the actress is grateful for her stint on the long-running show. She further opened up to People about how the series impacted her professional trajectory:

Jessica Williams isn’t the only Daily Show alum who’s been asked about succeeding Trevor Noah, who’s back on the stand-up comedy circuit. Correspondent Roy Wood Jr. was asked about hosting and, at the time, he admitted that he wouldn’t simply turn his nose up if the opportunity presented itself. However, he also said that he needed space to assess what he wants from a professional standpoint at this stage. 

There are certainly a number of possibilities when considering the show’s next host but, if you’re like me, you just can’t shake the feeling that Jessica Williams would be a strong fit for the job. Heck, even Stephen Colbert has endorsed her at this point. But what it all comes down to is her happiness, and she appears to be quite content at the moment. So she’ll likely be waiting just like the rest of us to see how gets picked to take over for Trevor Noah.

On December 8, 2022, The Daily Show hit the end of another era, with host Trevor Noah, who replaced Jon Stewart, leaving the show after seven seasons. Noah will now be spending more time traveling for both pleasure and to do stand-up comedy, but as far as The Daily Show is concerned, it was announced a few days ahead of the comedian’s exit that numerous celebrities will be filling as guest hosts for the foreseeable future. Cut to the beginning of 2023, it’s been announced who will be kicking off this portion of the Comedy Central series’ run.

As had previously been shared, Leslie Jones will be The Daily Show’s first guest host post-Trevor Noah, with her time behind the desk lasting from January 17-19. After that, Wanda Sykes will take over from January 23-26, followed by D.L. Hughley from January 30-February 2, Chelsea Handler from February 6-9, and then Sarah Silverman from February 13-16. But these five celebrities are just the opening salvo of guest hosts, with others on the way including Hasan Minhaj, Al Franken, John Leguizamo, Kal Penn and Marlon Wayans, though no dates for them have been announced yet. Of these individuals, Minhaj is the only one with past Daily Show experience, having previously worked as a correspondent from 2014-2018.

So we now have mid-January-mid February covered on The Daily Show, and with those additional celebrities, that should take us around mid-late March. However, Chris McCarthy, president of Comedy Central and CEO of Paramount Media Networks, previously said that this guest host rotation would unfold until sometime in June. So along with current Daily Show correspondents and contributors, like Roy Wood Jr. and Dulcé Sloan, set to also get guest hosting turns, you can count on more celebrities being announced for that position in the coming months. As McCarthy put it, this period is being used to “really experiment and try different things.”

After that, The Daily Show will go on break until September, when it will “relaunch” with the new permanent host. That being said, Chris McCarthy and The Daily Show showrunner Jen Flanz have said that they’re exploring the possibility of transitioning the series to having multiple anchors/hosts, so it’s entirely possible that the show could end up looking a lot different come this fall. What’s important to remember at the moment, though, is that just because someone is guest hosing The Daily Show doesn’t mean you should consider this their audition to keep the job. This is simply an opportunity to try their hand at hosting this popular cable series in the middle of their other gigs and obligations.

Since the day it was announced that Trevor Noah would be leaving The Daily Show, the conversation about who will take over for him continues to grow. One person who has been rumored as the next host is Roy Wood Jr., who has been a correspondent on the Comedy Central show since 2015. Now, the comedian has now weighed in on his future with The Daily Show. 

When asked by THR if he would consider taking over as host of The Daily Show, Wood explained that he would certainly consider the offer. Wood elaborated on the idea of taking over after Noah, saying: 

He makes a good point, hosting The Daily Show is a big job, and I’d think it would be a massive honor, considering whoever takes over will follow in the footsteps of Noah and Jon Stewart. 

Wood also spoke about if he’d remain a correspondent on the show if a different person is tapped as the next host. He said: 

I do hope Wood sticks around the comedy show, be it as host or correspondent, because he is truly hilarious. Lucky for us we’ll at least get to see him for a little while longer since he’s part of an epic line-up of guest hosts. 

Comedy Central has lined up quite the list of comedians to guest host The Daily Show while they find Noah’s predecessor. This list includes current Daily Show employees Wood and Dulcé Sloan as well as former corresponded Hasan Minhaj. Other guest hosts include Saturday Night Live alums Leslie Jones and Al Franken, comedians D.L. Hughley, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Handler and Wanda Sykes, along with actors Marlon Wayans, Kal Penn and John Leguizamo. 

According to Comedy Central, this rotation of guest hosts will air during the first half of the 2023 TV schedule, and then a full-time host will take over in September. 

As for Noah, he left The Daily Show on December 8 with plans to do some traveling and more stand-up. During 2023 he will head out on a global stand-up tour beginning January 20. He’ll visit 28 cities in the U.S. and then travel around the world. 

While Noah travels, we can look forward to seeing Wood a few more times on The Daily Show, and maybe one day, he’ll take over as the next host. 

In just two days, The Daily Show hits the end of an era, with Trevor Noah departing the satirical news program after hosting for seven years following Jon Stewart’s exit. Needless to say that ever since it was announced that Noah was leaving The Daily Show on December 8, there’s been the question of who will succeed him as the Comedy Central series’ permanent host. As it turns out, we’ll have to wait to a lot longer than expected to learn that answer, because for a good chunk of the next year, SNL vets and a swarm of other talent will be filling in as guest hosts.

Just like the transition period between Craig Ferguson and James Corden on The Late Late Show, or how Jeopardy! brought in numerous fresh faces to fill in following Alex Trebek’s passing, The Daily Show will be moving ahead with guest hosts to fill in for Trevor Noah in 2023, starting with Leslie Jones, who was a Saturday Night Live cast member from 2014 to 2019, on January 17. Here’s the full list of the announced participating talent (in no particular order other than Jones being first):

• Al Franken
• Sarah Silverman
• Chelsea Handler
• Wanda Sykes
• D.L. Hughley
• John Leguizamo
• Kal Penn
• Marlon Wayans
• Hasan Minhaj

Additionally, current Daily Show correspondents and contributors are set to be guest anchors on The Daily Show, with Roy Wood Jr. and Dulcé Sloan being specifically mentioned as in the mix (let’s also not forget that Hasan Minhaj is a former Daily Show correspondent). Executive producer and showrunner Jen Flanz told Vulture that while many, if not most, of these guest hosts will fill in for a week at a time, some may only appear for one night because of their busy schedules/previous commitments. 

Chris McCarthy, president of Comedy Central and CEO of Paramount Media Networks, added that this guest host rotation will unfold between the beginning of 2023 to around June and allow the show “to really experiment and try different things,” meaning that more talent will be announced in the coming weeks. Then The Daily Show will “relaunch in the fall,” i.e. the permanent host will take over in September 2023 and have “a full year to settle in before the 2024 presidential election.”

This isn’t the first time that The Daily Show has had guest host, with one of the more notable examples being when John Oliver sat behind the desk for a few weeks when Jon Stewart took time off to direct Rosewater. That said, Jen Flanz noted that as far as she can remember, “This is the first time we’re really having outsiders into our house.” Flanz also noted that anyone who’s coming in to guest host The Daily Show shouldn’t be seen as candidates to be the permanent host. This is simply an opportunity for various celebrities to pop in and try out hosting The Daily Show for a spell rather than make a full commitment to the gig.

In October, a few weeks after Trevor Noah revealed he was leaving The Daily Show (which apparently ruffled some feathers behind the scenes), the exiting host said he was excited to travel around the world again to do stand-up comedy, as well as do more producing work and spend more time “back home” in South Africa. By November, it was announced that Trevor will begin his Off the Record tour on January 20, which will see him visiting 28 cities in the United States, and international dates will be unveiled later. 

As far as picking a new permanent host for The Daily Show goes, Roy Wood Jr. has been rumored to be in contention for the job, and Chris McCarthy mentioned that these coming months will be a great time for them to “test out those ideas” on evolving the show. Speaking of the Daily Show format, McCarthy and Jen Flanz also said they’re exploring the possibility of transiting the series from the single-anchor format to having co-anchors or multiple co-hosts, i.e. along the lines of SNL’s “Weekend Update” or Good Morning America, but nothing has been decided yet.

For now, you have three more nights to enjoy Trevor Noah behind the desk at The Daily Show. After December 8, the series won’t return until Leslie Jones kicks off the guest hosting run in mid-January. As the 2023 Oscar race starts to heat up, the discourse surrounding last year’s ceremony and the slap continue to be a major point of discussion, especially with Will Smith promoting his upcoming film on the 2023 film schedule Emancipation. Over the last few days, the actor has started talking more about what happened that night. He has also discussed how he feels about it now, and told a story about an emotional interaction he had with his 9-year-old nephew after the ceremony. 

While talking with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show Smith opened up about what happened after he slapped Chris Rock. Noah explained his take on the situation, and then Smith opened up about his own reaction at the moment, and how those close to him, like is young nephew, responded to it too, saying: 

Smith then pulled a tissue out of his pocket, and continued saying “it was a mess.” Clearly, the actor was impacted not only by his actions, but also by the emotional response from his young nephew who had watched the moment on TV. 

As for the rest of Smith's family, his kids Willow and Jaden Smith have not said much, but did seem to respond to the situation on social media.  Willow open up a bit recently though, saying she sees her "whole family as being human." 

Jada Pinkett Smith also spoke out about the slap, saying she hopes both her husband and Chris Rock have "an opportunity to heal, talk this out and reconcile." 

The discourse surrounding Smith slapping Rock has gone on all year. With Emancipation coming out soon, there has been a lot of discussion about if the film will get nominated, and how the slap will impact the film's odds coming into the awards season. Based on Academy Members' thoughts on Smith’s actions and Emancipation, it’s unclear if the film will be represented at the Academy Awards. 

When it comes to the film getting nominated, Smith shared his thoughts on the criticism that Emancipation is coming out too soon. He explained to ReelBlend co-host Jake Hamilton that: 

Antoine Fuqua has also weighed in on how Emancipation will be received following the slap. He said that the movie “is bigger than that moment.” He also said he hopes people see the film and “be swept away” by Smith’s performance and “all the real hard work that the whole crew did.” 

The King Richard actor went on to tell Noah about what happened at the Oscars, saying it “was a horrific night.” He said there were “many nuances and complexities,” but in the end, he “just lost it.” Smith also talked about how you never know what someone is going through at a given moment and he “was going through something that night.” However, he also said “not that it justifies my behavior at all.” 

Smith said the fact that the people who worked on Emancipation might not get recognized for their work is “killing me dead.” Noah said no one deserves to be defined by one moment. 

In the last few days, Smith has opened up about the slap, and how bad it was. He’s also been open about how much he dislikes the fact that his actions could impact his latest film's chances during the upcoming awards season. This story about his nephew also provides a glimpse into how his family was impacted by the moment too. 

Eric Christian Olsen has been a fixture on CBS for more than a decade as a star of NCIS: Los Angeles, but playing Marty Deeks isn’t all that’s keeping him busy with the network. Just under two years after news broke that he was bringing two new shows to CBS via his Cloud Nine production company, he now has four more in the works, and TV veterans with credits like Lost and The Daily Show to their names are involved. 

Cloud Nine Productions has sold four projects to Eric Christian Olsen’s longtime network, and Deadline reports that two comedies and two dramas are in development. On the more serious side of television, Peculiar is a crime drama hailing from Lost co-creator Jeffrey Lieber and America 2.0 writer/director/producer JS Mayank as executive producers. 

A crime drama seems like a project that would be right up Olsen’s alley, as he’s currently on his thirteenth season as a series regular on NCIS: LA, and Jeffrey Lieber has a stellar credit to his name with Lost. Peculiar would feature a Seattle detective joining forces with a brilliant psychopath to investigate crimes after his former partner goes missing. That hasn't exactly happened in the NCIS franchise, so it sounds like Peculiar would stand out from other crime dramas if it receives a series order!

The other drama in the works is legal rather than crime, although it has yet to receive a title. Few details are available about the project, but a legal drama could fill a vacancy for CBS in the wake of Michael Weatherly’s Bull coming to an end after six seasons. Plus, NBC has the Law & Order franchise that has been going strong for decades, so perhaps there’s a market for a new legal drama on CBS. 

With shows like Young Sheldon and Ghosts, CBS already has a strong track record with comedies, and the two other new projects now in development could make the network even more of a destination for laughs than it is currently. The Daily Show’s Al Madrigal is behind a Latinx comedy called Family Insurance about a man who has to go back to work for his family business. Madrigal would star, write, and executive produce the project if ordered to series. 

The other potential sitcom bought by CBS Studios is called Mixed Signals and would be a romantic comedy based on the life of writer Liv Thompson and her relationship with her deaf partner. Thompson is set to write and executive produce if Mixed Signals moves forward and joins the CBS lineup. 

It’s too early to say if any of these shows will get a series order and make it to CBS, but Eric Christian Olsen’s Cloud Nine production company may have found some recipes for success. Previously, the company produced and developed Woke for Hulu, where it ran for two seasons with New Girl alum Lamorne Morris as leading man.

Only time will tell the future for these four new projects, but you can find Eric Christian Olsen in the NCIS: LA Season 14 fall finale on Sunday, November 27 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. While that will be the last episode of the long-running drama for 2022, the network has already revealed that it will return in the 2023 TV premiere schedule in early January with a special event.

For the first time ever, NCIS: LA will cross over with both NCIS and NCIS: Hawai’i for a three-hour event on Monday, January 2 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. The three-show crossover comes just months after the parent series and Hawai’i spinoff crossed over for the first time, and fans of the franchise have a lot to look forward to in the new year. 

It was recently announced that Trevor Noah will be exiting The Daily Show after hosting the Comedy Central series for seven years. With his final Daily Show appearance set to air on December 8, the comedian already has plans for the future, and he’s doing some traveling.

Trevor Noah will be taking his comedy act global in 2023, according to THR. Just over a month after he leaves The Daily Show, Noah will embark on his Off the Record Tour. Beginning January 20, he will visit 28 cities in the United States, with international dates set to be announced later. 

When Noah announced his exit on The Daily Show, he expressed his desire to return to the road, so it’s not so surprising that he’s touring not long after signing off. The tour will start in Atlanta for a single January date before picking up again in February for Louisville. He will take another break again before continuing in St. Louis at the beginning of March, with sporadic dates throughout the year across the country.

Unlike his regular hours on The Daily Show, this comedy tour will allow him to spread his performances out throughout his schedule. Although it’s not known how long the tour will go for, this should keep him occupied for quite some time.

Meanwhile, as Trevor Noah looks to the future beyond The Daily Show, there is still a question of who will replace him as host. Former Daily Show host Stephen Colbert weighed in on the replacement, saying that Jon Stewart should return to the chair or possibly Roy Wood Jr., who is not only a Comedy Central correspondent but is also rumored to be in the running to replace Noah. 

While the Comedy Central series has had a few hosts since it's been on the air, The Daily Show may be doing something unusual following Trevor Noah’s exit. The show will go on hiatus until January 17, 2023, and could see rotating hosts, similar to what Jeopardy! in the wake of longtime host Alex Trebek's death. Nothing yet is set in stone as to who could possibly replace Noah, but whatever happens next for the show, the comedian is heading out on tour.

Stephen Colbert is basically Comedy Central royalty. The Late Show host had a memorable run on The Daily Show as a correspondent before headlining his own show, The Colbert Report, from 2005 to 2014. He left the successful satire program to take over for David Letterman at CBS, yet he clearly has fond memories of his long tenure at the network. Upon the recent news that Trevor Noah is to leave TDS, Colbert was asked to comment on what the future holds for the satirical news program, and he gave an honest response.

During an interview with Charlamagne Tha God on his show, Hell of a Week, Stephen Colbert reminisced about his time on The Daily Show, so it was only natural that the conversation turned to who he thinks would be best to succeed Trevor Noah. While he coyly expressed concern about the future for the show, he remarked:

Jon Stewart previously hosted The Daily Show and held that post while Colbert acted as a correspondent. He was replaced by Noah in 2014 and later returned to TV last year in The Problem with Jon Stewart, which currently available for AppleTV+ subscribers. Roy Wood Jr. is currently a correspondent on the Comedy Central news program show and has been a rumored frontrunner for Noah’s position. Both options would certainly lead to fan support, and would be great “gets” for the network. During Colbert's chat with Charlamagne tha God, one audience member shouted that a black woman would also be a great pick to be the next host of the network mainstay, to which the talk show host agreed and made another suggestion:

Jessica Williams also acted as a Daily Show correspondent from 2012 to 2016 and left to pursue other projects. She had a show on HBO called 2 Dope Queens, which ran for two seasons and later joined the Fantastic Beasts franchise -- the Harry Potter prequel trilogy. She is incredibly talented, and the Beasts series is rumored to be coming to a close -- so Williams may be available. It would be great to have a female Daily Show host, and Williams would definitely be a great presence in the late-night TV space. 

Even if program brings back Jon Stewart, or hires an incredibly capable familiar face like Jessica Williams or Roy Wood Jr., the recent "Late Night" departures and transitions clearly signal that changes are happening in the talk show world. Jimmy Kimmel recently expressed concern over his own future at ABC, and Conan O’Brian’s planned transition to streaming and podcasting is a possible indicator of where the medium is going. However, Colbert still sits comfortably behind the late night desk. We'll have to wait and see what lies ahead for the format as well as Comedy Central's flagship show as it searches for its next host.

Seven years ago, Jon Stewart left The Daily Show and selected Trevor Noah, who had appeared on the Comedy Central series a few times, as his successor. Now the time has come for Trevor to depart The Daily Show, with the big news being announced at the end of September. So naturally many people are wondering who will become the satirical news program’s new host, and there may be an unusual plan in the works to fill the void left by Noah. 

Trevor Noah will make his Daily Show appearance on Thursday, December 8, and the series will go on hiatus until Tuesday, January 17, 2023. Upon its return, three sources who spoke to Variety claimed that Comedy Central is thinking about “utilizing a rotating array of hosts” for the The Daily Show. This is just one of the options that’s currently under consideration, and it’s unclear when plans will be finalized one way or the other.

Going through multiple hosts would certainly be a big way to deliver the “reinvention” that’s been promised for The Daily Show following Trevor Noah’s exit. Sure, there have been instances where guest hosts have filled in on a temporary basis, such as when John Oliver sat behind the desk when Jon Stewart was shooting Rosewater, but that’s a different beast from a a handful of people filling a position that’s otherwise unoccupied. The Late Late Show did something similar in the transition periods between Craig Kilborn and Craig Ferguson, and then in the few months between Ferguson’s departure and James Corden’s arrival (although in that latter case, Corden was already slated to take over). 

This potential move for The Daily Show also calls to mind what’s being done with Jeopardy! these days, as Ken Jennings and Mayim Bialik are serving as rotating hosts of the main show, and Bialik additionally hosts primetime specials and spinoffs. However, in The Daily Show’s case, it’s unclear if it would only rotate through hosts on a temporary basis like what The Late Late Show has done (and may be doing again since James Corden is leaving the CBS program in summer 2023), or if this is meant to be a permanent move, at least for the near future.

Either way, as already mentioned, don’t count on The Daily Show rotating through hosts as being a done deal just yet. It’s also been reported that Roy Wood Jr. is being considered for the job after being a correspondent since Trevor Noah started hosting in 2015. One thing that has become clear is Noah’s departure reportedly ruffled some feathers behind the scenes, resulting in the Comedy Central brass having to scramble to figure out the next move rather than being a lengthy period to prepare for a changing of the guard.

As for Trevor Noah, once he’s done with The Daily Show, he intends to perform more stand-up comedy around the world and spend more time with his family in South Africa. Trevor Noah shocked a lot of people just a few weeks ago when he announced that he’d be stepping down as host of The Daily Show after seven years. And in the aftermath of him breaking the big news, people probably have a number of questions. For starters, who’s going to replace him as the host of the long-running talk show? Aside from the uncertainties directly involving the series, there’s also the matter of what lies ahead for Noah. The political pundit has now shed some light on what he plans to do once his tenure ends.

Trevor Noah revealed his departure during The Daily Show’s September 29th episode. During the monologue, the host expressed gratitude for having been able to hold the position for as long as he has and also reflected on the many things he’d experienced throughout his stint. At the time, Noah indicated that he was eager to try some new things once his time on the show was done. He expanded on that during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Noah started off by saying that he wants to do “everything,” before getting more specific about his plans: 

It sounds like the 38-year-old comedian has already formed a number of goals for the future. While his time on the Comedy Central chat show wasn’t as long as his predecessors’, one can understand why he’d be ready to step away. As he told Jimmy Fallon, “the show is hard,” as it takes a lot of work and collaboration to get a program like his ready for air. Overall, it sounds like the outgoing host is eager for his next chapter and is leaving of his own accord. (That latter point seemingly counters what Megyn Kelly said about his exit.)

Trevor Noah’s big news purportedly ruffled some feathers behind the scenes, however. Per a report, only a few crew members knew that Noah was going to exit the show and announce it during a taping. And allegedly, he revealed his exit to a group of people in the studio audience before even discussing the matter with a number of his co-workers. Noah’s comments about his future plans do line up with the recent report, though, as it was said that the star was eager to get back to doing stand-up.

All the while, Comedy Central has yet to reveal who’s going to take over for the pundit once he steps down. But rumors suggest that The Daily Show has one potential candidate, and he’s already with the program. Roy Wood Jr., who’s served as a correspondent on the series for the past seven years, is allegedly a frontrunner for the job. While this is far from confirmed, Wood would be a logical choice. His hiring would make sense, as he's definitely talented. Plus, his hiring would help to maintain a sense of continuity, from a creative standpoint.

Trevor Noah’s final episode will air on Thursday, December 8, so fans still have some time before the show’s new era kicks off. Noah seems pumped to do some more exciting things with his crew before he signs off and, hopefully, that’s an indication that he’ll close things out on a high note.

Comedy Central is approaching the end of an era. Last month, The Daily Show host Trevor Noah announced that he’d be exiting the series after seven years. Well, now we finally know when his final appearance will be, but that’s just a portion of the big Daily Show-related news that’s come out.

First things first, Comedy Central announced today that Trevor Noah will leave The Daily Show on Thursday, December 8. Ahead of his departure, the satirical news program will look back on Noah’s greatest moments from his run, which kicked off in 2015 when he was selected to take over hosting duties from Jon Stewart. Chris McCarthy, President & CEO, Paramount Media Networks and MTV Entertainment Studios, said the following about Noah’s tenure on The Daily Show:

After Trevor Noah bids farewell to The Daily Show, the series won’t return until Tuesday, January 17, 2023, and it was teased that the Emmy-winning franchise will go through “reinvention” during that break period. What exactly that means is unclear, but there are “additional details forthcoming.” Here’s what Noah said about working with Chris McCarthy:

So much like how Trevor Noah’s version of The Daily Show distinguished itself in some major ways from what Jon Stewart did during his 16-year run, it sounds like steps are being taken to make the new era of The Daily Show stands out from Noah’s time behind the desk. Before we discover what those differences are though, we’ll likely learn who will be The Daily Show’s new host. Correspondent Roy Wood Jr. reportedly is being considered for the position, which would make sense considering he joined The Daily Show when Noah began hosting. That said, there’s still the possibility that one of the other correspondents or even someone who’s not affiliated with The Daily Show right now could be tapped to host, so we’ll just have to wait and see how this unfolds.

As for why Trevor Noah decided to leave The Daily Show, he explained it’s because he became more interested in trying new things. Noah has also said he doesn’t intend to leave the public eye, so whatever his next professional endeavors are, we’ll surely be hearing about them. Noah’s exit is just one of several major late-night television shakeups to happen this year. James Corden announced that he’s leaving The Late Late Show in summer 2023, and Samantha Bee’s TBS show Full Frontal was canceled after seven seasons.

There have been lots of similarities between the 2022 TV schedule staple House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, it’s watched by millions, it’s full of epic action and intense story, there are various members of the Targaryen family tree to keep track of, and it has some very dark episodes, literally. Also, much like when GOT was on, fans are loud online whenever they have a complaint, and when those complaints get loud enough the discussion makes it on late-night TV shows. This time, it has to do with the lighting in the latest episode, and both fans of HOTD and The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah have some thoughts about the decision to dim the lights on the episode. 

For a bit of background, last week’s episode took place during the night. While lots of shows and movies have stories take place at night, the spinoff had some particular problems and they've been commented on widely across the Internet. Much like the cinematographer on The Long Night episode of GOT, HBO has defended the creative decision to make the episode dark. 

With all this said, here is what Trevor Noah and the fans have to say about it all. 

Trevor Noah Responds To The Dark House Of The Dragon Episode  

Over at The Daily Show, Trevor Noah addressed the darkness during his headline section of the show. He started his bit by saying: 

During the bit, Noah made jokes about the darkness and referenced the dark episodes of GOT. He also did a little skit reenacting the scene as if it was so dark the actors couldn’t tell who they were acting with. Noah also explained:

He’s right it was a super dark episode of HOTD, I’m happy I watched it late at night so I could see most of it, but I had to squint a little. Much like me, other fans had to squint too, and they made sure to let HBO about their struggles on Twitter. 

Fans Are Not Thrilled About House Of The Dragon’s Choice To Make The Lighting So Dark

The fans of HOTD are loud. Every week the discourse surrounding the show is dense and usually hilarious. Over the show’s Season 1 run we’ve seen fans roast Ser Criston Cole, and last week they had some thoughts about a major change from the books. Every so often, fans have a technical gripe though, like this week.

For example, this viewer tweeted their complaint at HBO, who responded to them, check it out: 

Another viewer decided to take screenshots to show just how many times the show was too dark to see what was going on. 

Other viewers quickly pointed out the difference between a shot of Rhaenyra and Daemon that was light in the press photos when the show first started, and the same shot in the most recent episode that was dark. 

Then there are the fans who were having fun with the situation. For example, this viewer explained their viewing experience by way of a Zendaya photo. 

Another viewer pulled a hilarious meme from Community, and posted this gem: 

Whether viewers were actually mad or just wanted to post a meme, this lighting debacle has been a big point of discussion this week. I’m curious to see if Episode 8 will be a bit lighter, literally, I doubt it will be figuratively. There’s a major change coming to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, as host Trevor Noah announced that he plans to leave his post after seven years on the air. Noah addressed his exit during a recent episode of the show and, since then, both fans and fellow stars alike have shared reactions to the news. Media personality Megyn Kelly is one of the latest to lay out her thoughts on the development, and she didn’t mince words. In fact, she fired a few shots at Noah and said, among other things, that he’s a “ratings killer.” 

When Trevor Noah made his announcement nearly a week ago, he expressed gratitude for having been able to host The Daily Show for the past several years. He explained, however, that the events of the past few years have given him some to think about his future and as a result, he’s ready to try some new things. But Megyn Kelly suggests that Noah’s decision to step away was not his own. She alleges that the reason for the shift is due to his performance as host, which she believes has been poor:

But as the podcaster shares her thoughts on Trevor Noah’s impending exit, reports suggest that his decision ruffled some feathers behind the scenes. It’s rumored that few people on staff actually knew about Noah’s choice before he announced it. It's even been said that he told people in the studio audience about it before he even let a number of his colleagues know. Noah was thought to have renewed his deal with Comedy Central earlier this year but, as of late, he’s apparently been eager to work more stand-up comedy gigs.

So one major question remains: Who’s going to become the new host of The Daily Show? Well, the latest reports suggest that there’s already a candidate in mind, show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. The veteran actor and comedian could be a solid host for the show, which he’s been a part of for the last seven years. Despite this rumor though, Comedy Central has remained mum regarding plans for the future. 

More immediately, Trevor Noah has not announced a timetable for his departure, but chances are he’ll likely look to close things out on a high note. It’s likely that further assessments of his stint as host will arrive when he’s finally anchored his last show. Whether or not Megyn Kelly chooses to share additional thoughts on his tenure remains to be seen.

There's been another shake-up in the late-night TV department, as Trevor Noah announced his departure from The Daily Show this past week. Noah started hosting the show seven years ago after former host Jon Stewart exited Comedy Central's satirical news program. Noah's hiring may have been a surprise to many, but he's since become a late-night staple, covering political and pop culture topics (such as the racist Little Mermaid backlash). Noah's departure definitely comes as a bit of a shock too but, per a new report, those who were especially taken aback by the news were his colleagues at the show.

Trevor Noah’s announcement was kept pretty hush hush, and it's honestly surprising that a news outlet didn't break the news before the host could reveal it himself. While the latter is what ultimately ended up happening, it seems like Noah’s decision to break the news on air came out of left field, as many key people who worked on the show were apparently not in the know. According to Deadline, the announcement of Noah's departure wasn't exactly organized like James Cordon’s well-managed exit from The Late Late Show, which was confirmed earlier this year. Cordon has a planned date for his last show, yet details regarding Noah’s departure remain unclear. The outlet also claims that the number of people aware of Noah's exit was evidently small. 

Interestingly enough, the host reportedly revealed his exit to a number of people in the studio audience before breaking the news to many of his co-workers. Apparently though, the TV personality thought it was "imperative" that he tell show attendees, as he wanted them to hear the news from him and not another source.

Still, from an organizational standpoint, this entire situation might put a strain on the producers, who may have wanted a clear timetable to start making plans for Trevor Noah’s potential successor. Another reason all of this may have been surprising is that it had reportedly been indicated that Noah was going to stay with the show for at least another year. More specifically, Noah was assumed to have renewed his deal with Comedy Central earlier this year.

One really has to wonder how the staff and Comedy Central as a whole will choose to proceed with the host's departure and his eventual replacement, who will likely have their own way of doing things. The show changed following Jon Stewart’s departure in order to fit his successor's comedic sensibilities. So needless to say, a major overhaul could be on the horizon. At this point, the network hasn't given any indication as to who might take over, but reports suggest that names are already being circled for the coveted Daily Show role.

After 7 years on The Daily Show, Trevor Noah announced he would be stepping down as host and leaving the program. Noah took over for Jon Stewart, who had hosted the show for 16 years before departing. This leaves the host’s chair open for someone new, and apparently Comedy Central might already have a candidate in mind. 

Noah was promoted to host after being a correspondent on The Daily Show. According to TMZ we could see something like this happen again. Sources told the site that current correspondent Roy Wood Jr. is in the running to take over Noah’s seat. 

Wood joined The Daily Show in 2015, which was the same year Noah took over after Stewart. Over the last 7 years, fans have grown to love him and he’s one of the show’s leading correspondents. The article said Comedy Central executives see Wood as a “natural fit” for host. Doing this would also follow the precedent of Noah's promotion by choosing a host out of the current correspondents rather than hiring someone new. 

The article also explained that Wood’s contract is set for renewal soon. He has also been in demand as a stand-up comedian, and he has appeared in movies like “Confess, Fletch.” 

It was also mentioned in the article that their sources said the network executives let Wood know they want to meet with him about contract renewal. However, the process of finding Noah’s successor is just getting started and no decisions have been made. The article also mentioned the possibility of choosing a woman to take over Noah’s position. 

If the show were to promote a current correspondent they would be choosing from comedians like Wood, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta and Dulcé Sloan. No matter what, any of these correspondents would likely make a good host, especially looking back at The Daily Show’s history of correspondents turned talk show hosts. 

The two most prominent examples of this are Stephen Colbert and John Oliver. 

Colbert hosted The Colbert Report on Comedy Central for a while after leaving The Daily Show. He was then dubbed David Letterman’s successor, and moved over to CBS to host The Late Show, where he has now been for almost about 8 years. He’s also maintained a great relationship with his former boss, as Jon Stewart show’s up on Colbert’s show from time to time. 

Meanwhile, John Oliver left The Daily Show to start Last Week Tonight with John Oliver at HBO. Since starting the hit show in 2014, Last Week Tonight has become wildly popular. It has also dominated the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category at the Emmys since 2016, which includes its name on the 2022 list of Emmy winners. 

Noah’s announcement adds to the list of hosts leaving late-night this year. James Cordon announced he would be leaving the Late, Late Show after 8 years. On top of that, Daily Show alum Samantha Bee’s show Full Frontal got canceled after seven seasons. With all this change, it’s safe to say the late-night landscape will look very different soon. 

I see The Daily Show as one of the iconic shows of late-night, and I’d imagine they will pick from their current crop of correspondents for their next host. If that host ends up being Wood, I’m sure he’ll do a fantastic job. It's the end of an era for yet another big television host. Trevor Noah, the lead anchor of The Daily Show, is hanging it up after seven years in the job. Noah has filled the shoes of prior host Jon Stewart quite well for the better part of a decade, and the time is now coming for someone to step in for him.

A report from Deadline mentioned that Trevor Noah was working with Comedy Central on trying to work through the demanding schedule of The Daily Show. Noah assured audiences in attendance that he won't be leaving the public eye, but he's become more interested as of late in branching out to try different things than what he's doing now. 

The shock of Trevor Noah's exit is sudden, though Noah noted he isn't leaving immediately. The Daily Show host confirmed they're still trying to figure out how to work on his exit and who will succeed him. The latter will be a big question, as Comedy Central will likely look to recruit top talent to helm its celebrated news program. 

2022 is quickly becoming the year when hosts of staple late-night television are leaving. James Corden left The Late Late Show after eight years with the gig, and Samantha Bee lost her series Full Frontal after seven seasons. The late-night space is quickly losing a lot of notable names, which will leave some newcomers to fend off current veterans like Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert. 

Just to put this all in perspective, Trevor Noah joined The Daily Show not too long after Jimmy Fallon took over The Tonight Show, and shortly before Stephen Colbert started hosting The Late Show. He's certainly had some time to make the show his own in that span and prove any initial doubters who thought he couldn't fill the hole left behind by Jon Stewart (who has since moved onto other streaming endeavors). No doubt a similar pressure will be placed upon his successor, and it will be interesting to see who Comedy Central vets for the job. 

That's assuming The Daily Show will continue after Trevor Noah, though after some chatter in 2020, it doesn't appear the show is going anywhere. Noah didn't seem to indicate that in his message, so any fan thinking this is curtains for the comedy news show just needs to relax and wait for the next chapter. 

The Daily Show airs on Comedy Central Mondays through Thursdays at 11:00 p.m. ET. Now would be a great time to jump back in on watching to see Trevor Noah's final episodes, and maybe look for some clue about who will take his place. This could be a long wait, though, so maybe just browse the 2022 TV schedule in the meantime and sit tight for more details. 

Kanye West isn’t exactly unfamiliar to controversy, but it’s come to a head in more recent months. Namely, some of the rapper’s behavior on social media was taken as “concerning” back in March, prompting both Instagram to temporarily suspend his account and the 2022 Grammys to revoke West's then-scheduled performance. What is more is that his new Yeezy Gap line, lately presented in stores in quote-unquote “trash bags,” resulted in a major backlash as spectators perceived it as insulting to the homeless community that Ye proclaimed to be inspired by. Alas, he has gotten some support amidst it all from a familiar source: Trevor Noah.

Truth be told, the Daily Show alum had been on the receiving end of the provocative star’s outspoken-ness around the time of the whole Instagram drama. Notably, Kanye West had directed a racial slur at the South African-born Trevor Noah on the platform, not long after the latter had spoken out on Comedy Central about his treatment toward ex-wife Kim Kardashian. However, Noah reacted to the situation by trying to appeal to his better nature, per TMZ. Now, months after the fact, while West continues to face public ire for his actions, the talk show host explained on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast why his philosophy of “counsel not cancel” is appropriate here, saying:

The host went on to say that the world at large has become too, perhaps, complacent in bashing perceived “irredeemable characters” like Kanye West, without first reaching out with compassion. In his view, even Ye deserves at least an “opportunity at redemption.” Although, the comedian admits that it can sometimes be a tricky thing to navigate:

Back in 2020, when they were still technically married, Kim Kardashian herself had tried to advocate for understanding of Kanye West and his struggles with bipolar disorder. Just prior to, he had been making several controversial statements about the mother of his four kids and culture as a whole while on his failed presidential campaign trail. Kardashian talked then about the necessity of “giving grace” and how the disorder didn’t negate West’s “creative ideas” and his “genius.”

Unfortunately, though, their relationship wouldn’t survive much longer, with the future Hulu star filing for divorce in February of 2021. Later on, she had started dating SNL alum Pete Davidson, and both of them were also on the receiving ends of the rapper’s social media tirades earlier this year. Kim Kardashian was seemingly at her wits end about their online beef, as she took to hitting back at some of Ye's more personal claims.

Eventually, after the suspension and other consequences, the 21-time Grammy winner took a hiatus from public life to reportedly “work” on himself. But it apparently wasn’t meant to be. Kim K and Pete Davidson broke up this month, which resulted in Kanye West returning to Instagram with a fresh dig at the now-single comedian. Kim and her family’s new reality series, The Kardashians, is expected to cover the whole issue in more detail in the upcoming second season streaming on September 22 for Hulu subscribers. But for now, reports only indicate that Kardashian is not happy about the breakup commentary.

For his part, the 45-year-old mind behind the recent Donda albums sees his bold choices as just that, bold. About the Yeezy Gap trash bag debacle, Kanye West made a rare official statement on his own behalf, saying that he refused to apologize for his creativity. In fact, he called himself an “innovator” in the sphere of design and fashion.

So, all in all, Trevor Noah might not have given up on Kanye West just yet. Certainly, Kanye West hasn’t given up on Kanye West, either. But what about everyone else?
