The next season of The Great British Baking Show (or the Great British Bake Off in its home country) is going to feel very strange, as it'll mark the first season in nearly a decade without the iconic Prue Leith as a judge. The baking queen announced back in January that she would be leaving the show. For the upcoming episodes, Nigella Lawson is set to take over as judge alongside Paul Hollywood, who has been with the show since day one. New episodes will begin shooting this summer and, in the meantime, some may wonder why Prue is leaving in the first place.

Leith frequently makes me laugh when I’m enjoying The Great British Baking Show but, due to a recent appearance on the BBC’s The One Show, she almost had me crying. The media personality stated, pretty bluntly, why she made the decision to leave the show, and it ultimately comes down to the fact that she’s 86 years old, and understands that she doesn’t have a lot of time left. Still, she also had this to say…

Certainly, nobody is expecting Prue Leith to shuffle off this mortal coil anytime soon. She appears to be in remarkably good shape for an 86-year-old, but there is certainly less time in front of her. As unfortunate as it may be for fans to confront the fact that the restauranteur is getting up in age, Leith herself isn't shying away from it. She’s too old not to spend he remaining time doing what she wants to do with it.

The good news for fans is that Prue likely isn’t going to disappear from TV entirely. She also mentioned that pursuing other endeavors related to TV other than Bake Off are among the ways she wants to spend her remaining time. Yet she also clearly wants to work less and is looking forward to taking this summer off. Check out her full comments below.

While Bake Off has had many new hosts during its run, Prue Leith’s departure is only the second judging change the show has seen in its 16 seasons. Baker Mary Berry was the co-judge alongside Paul Hollywood during the show’s first seven seasons. When the series changed networks from BBC One to Channel Four, Berry left the show and was replaced by Leith.

Prue Leith will surely be missed by fans, though I wish her well in her future endeavors. All the while, something that doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon is how someone can watch the show here in the United States. A Netflix subscription is required to watch old and new seasons of the show, as new episodes drop just days after they air in the UK. I'll certainly be watching this season to see how Nigella Lawson takes over from Leith.

There’s no question that The Great British Bake Off is one of the best baking shows television can offer (even as a perfect in-the-background series), and that’s been proven through the show’s longevity across the past 15 years. While it feels like we’ll be watching talented bakers whip up signatures, technicals and showstoppers and careful judging from Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith forever, this week Leith announced her time as a judge was coming to an end. Aww, The Great British Bake Off sure isn’t going to be the same without Prue Leith. Noel Fielding joined the show at the same time as a presenter, originally alongside Sandi Toksvig for three seasons before sharing the hosting duties with Matt Lucas for three more. His current co-host is Allison Hammond, who joined back in 2023. The only consistent judge throughout every season has been Paul Hollywood.

By 1969, she had opened her own Michelin-starred restaurant called Leith’s. Considering its strong reception and the Sundance Film Festival and the awards Train Dreams has already locked up, this movie could be there. Train Dreams stars Joel Edgerton as a man trying to help bring the railroad across America, despite the toll it takes on him and his family.

NCIS is one of the longest-running shows on TV, and it’s had a rotating cast of characters throughout its decade-plus run. It’s a safe bet, however, that no characters have been as popular with fans as Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David, as played by Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo. You’ll need a Paramount+ subscription to follow the new adventures of the first couple of NCIS in their spinoff series Tony & Ziva, as the show won’t be on CBS.

The Paper, Season 1 - September 4 (Peacock)

The Office is one of the best sitcoms of all time, according to basically anybody who’s ever seen it. That’s going to make for a high bar to clear when spinoff series The Paper debuts. The series, available with a Peacock subscription, stars Domhall Gleeson, the editor in chief of a failing newspaper, trying to keep it relevant.

Highest 2 Lowest - September 5 (Apple TV+)

It’s been a long time since Spike Lee and Denzel Washington have worked together, but when they do, it’s magic. Highest 2 Lowest got strong positive responses from critics when the film opened in theaters. This week the film becomes available with an Apple TV+ subscription.

The Great British Baking Show - September 5 (Netflix)

Honestly, at this point, I think the entire reason I still have a Netflix subscription might be The Great British Baking Show. The series is the definition of comfort viewing, and so I’m so happy that the series returns this week with 10 new bakers to go through a series of challenges to crown a winner.

September is going to continue to be a solid month for streaming, with a new season of Only Murders in the Building and the debut of the Marvel Zombies animated series among the new shows arriving this month.

Law & Order (1990 - 2010; 2022 - Present)

Law & Order, with its 500-plus episodes, has made the laundry-folding process a little better for decades now thanks to its grisly murders, captivating courtroom sequences, and too many “Jack McCoy” moments to count. This isn’t a knock on the show, but you don’t even really have to pay attention all that much to know what’s going on.

How It's Made (2001 - 2019)

Okay, you might get distracted by the manufacturing processes for things like Crayons, crackers, pillows, bowling balls, and thousands of other items featured on this long-running educational program, but How It’s Made makes for some great background noise. The soothing narration, that catchy music, and endless shots of everyday items being made make this a perfect option.

Home Improvement (1991 - 1999)

Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor (Tim Allen) probably never folded a shirt in his life (at least not properly), but that doesn’t mean Home Improvement is a great option for the laundry-folding machine in all of us. If you’re folding one basket, or two baskets, or trying to save your room from the pile that never goes away, this beloved ‘90s TV show will help you pass the time.

The Simpsons (1989 - Present)

With countless characters we love to hate, all kinds of zany situations, and more than 700 episodes to choose from, The Simpsons is one of those shows you can have on in the background in any situation. So, it’s not all surprising that this is a great option for laundry day.

The West Wing (1999 - 2006)

Considered one of the “peak TV era” shows, The West Wing was a staple of network television in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. That said, it’s not hard to imagine that at least a few people have gone through much of the Bartlet Administration while folding and pressing their laundry.

Friends (1994 - 2004)

When you have an episode with a title like“ The One with the East German Laundry Detergent,” you know Friends is going to be a great show to have on while folding your clothes. The landmark sitcom is pretty much the TV equivalent of a warm blanket, so it makes total sense.

Unsolved Mysteries (1987 - Present)

One of the greatest true crime shows to ever hit the small screen, Unsolved Mysteries has been there for many of us for years. First, the classic episodes hosted by Robert Stack helped us pass the time and eat snacks after school. Now, those very same episodes (as well as the Netflix revival) are there for… laundry. Where all these clothes come from is the real unsolved mystery in households around the country.

Scrubs (2001 - 2010)

Bill Lawrence’s Scrubs is one of the best comedies set in a hospital and one of the best medical shows of all time. That said, it’s also a perfect show to watch while folding laundry. Well, unless you experience one of J.D.’s elaborate daydreams while sorting socks. Maybe that explains where those missing socks have gone.

Cheers (1982 - 1993)

No judging here, but some of us have a certain stack of clothes that are pretty much like Norm from Cheers at this point. You know that the laundry will be there tomorrow like it was there today and yesterday (and the day before that).

Planet Earth (2006)

Planet Earth is one of those shows that’s perfect for just about any task around the house, especially with David Attenborough’s comforting narration perfectly explaining everything on the screen. And who knows, maybe you’ll go through the entire docuseries and its various sequels and spinoffs by the time you finish.

Burn Notice (2007 - 2013)

Aziz Ansari’s cousin Harris loves Burn Notice, but does he love watching the USA Network original show while folding his clothes? We’re kind of afraid to ask. Regardless, this spy series starring Jeffrey Donovan, Gabrielle Anwar, and Bruce Campbell is one of those shows that feels tailor-made for the mindless task of laundry sorting.

Trailer Park Boys (2001 - 2007; 2014 - 2018)

Trailer Park Boys probably isn’t the first show that comes to mind when you’re trying to be productive, but this Canadian comedy series about the residents of Sunnyvale Trailer Park is the very definition of mindless, crude entertainment. Sure, you won’t want the kids around with the show’s profanity, but this would be great for a late-night laundry session.

30 Rock (2006 - 2013)

With seven seasons and nearly 140 episodes to watch, 30 Rock has more than enough laughs and crazy moments to get you through even the biggest of laundry piles. With its cast of characters working on the fictional TGS sketch comedy series, this beloved NBC comedy will do the trick.

Full House (1987 - 1995)

What would Danny Tanner do? Well, he probably wouldn’t let his laundry situation get out of hand, despite having an ever-growing group of roommates. All jokes aside about the Full House patriarch’s obsession with cleanliness and order, this long-running sitcom has gotten millions of people through laundry baskets over the years. Join in on the fun.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia (2005 - Present)

Now, there’s a chance you get distracted by all those absurd It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia side characters (or even the main cast), but this FX comedy series is peak-laundry folding material. Just make sure you don’t come up with some ridiculous scheme to hide the clothes or pass the task on to someone else.

The Office (2005 - 2013)

Though the series did “jump the shark” near the end, The Office is still one of the best American sitcoms ever made. With a total of 201 episodes and thousands of hilarious and iconic jokes, there’s more than enough to keep you entertained while you work your way through that basket of socks that’s been taunting you for years.

Pawn Stars (2009 - Present)

With more than 650 episodes, all kinds of remarkable and odd pieces of memorabilia and historical artifacts, Pawn Stars has been one of the most popular shows on the History Channel for years now. And while we would love to be able to say “I know a guy” who can handle all these clothes, Rick Harrison and company at Gold & Silver Pawn Shop will help make the folding process a little more entertaining.

American Pickers (2010 - Present)

Like a lot of other great History Channel shows, American Pickers is one of those series perfect for background noise. You don’t really have to follow along to the finer points of the reality program, which is perfect when you’re about halfway through a load of clothes that you really need to finish.

Seinfeld (1989 - 1998)

Who would have thought that a show about nothing would be perfect for laundry? Well, that’s the case for Seinfeld. Sure, you’re probably going to get distracted, put mismatched socks together, or accidentally merge the “keep” and “give away” stacks on the foot of the bed, but it’s worth it.

Parks And Recreation (2009 - 2015)

Though it’s unlikely that Ron Swanson would be too fond of spending hours folding clothes, Parks and Recreation is a show that is perfect for the task. Sure, you may be stuck in a pit of clothes that were washed weeks ago before you finally pull yourself out, but it’s all about the journey.

Family Guy (1999 - Present)

Family Guy, one of the best-animated series of the 21st century, is also a great show to have on in the background while doing just about anything. This includes doing laundry. Sure, there are things we’d rather be doing than folding clothes, but this long-running Fox show certainly makes the task less mind-numbing.

Gilmore Girls (2000 - 2007)

Lorelai and Rory Gilmore guiding us through the ups and downs of small-town life is a great way to make doing laundry a lot more fun, or at least more melodramatic. With seven seasons, 153 episodes, and so many romances to explore, this is definitely a great option for folks who’ve put on laundry for like two months.

The UnXplained (2019 - Present)

How did this stack of clothes get so big? Is this clean, cleanish, or dirty? Does William Shatner fold his own clothes? These are questions with no answers, but The UnXplained will distract you from those mysteries while you search for that missing sock or No Country for Old Man bootleg t-shirt that disappeared in the wash.

Suits (2011 - 2019)

From 2011 to 2019, few shows reached the heights experienced by Suits. This USA Network drama about the high-stakes world of corporate law introduced viewers to all kinds of characters and intense situations along the way. And while few, if any, of those managing partners and ladder-climbing associates did their own laundry, they can help you do yours.

The X Files (1993 - 2002; 2016 - 2018)

A show that made it more than 10 seasons, The X Files was one of the most well-known and watched series of the ‘90s. If you want to mix things up with the laundry and imagine a world in which aliens and other paranormal creatures appear (and possibly help fold those fitted sheets), this landmark sci-fi show will do the trick.

The Great British Baking Show (2014 - Present)

The Great British Baking Show, or The Great British Bake Off as it’s known in its native United Kingdom, is one of the most delicious, hilarious, and watchable cooking shows to ever grace the small screen. While we typically prefer seeing these delectable creations (or disasters) in all their glory, maybe folding clothes will distract and prevent you from mindlessly eating as you watch.

Modern Family (2009 - 2020)

There’s nothing dysfunctional about the Dunphy and Pritchett families from Modern Family, right? Well, maybe a little. This long-running sitcom is one the best options when you’re trying to fold clothes, or really do anything around the house. You’ll be so fixated by Phil coming up with some scheme, Cameron and Mitchell having a meltdown, or Jay being over it all that you’ll forget you’re doing laundry.

Somebody Feed Phil (2018 - Present)

Somebody Feed Phil, a show that follows Everybody Loves Raymond co-creator Phil Rosenthal as he travels the globe to eat anything and everything in his field of view. With so many seasons, so many culinary explorations, and some hilarious moments involving a man loving food way too much, there’s a lot to enjoy.

House (2004 - 2012)

House is one of those shows you can start watching halfway through an episode and still get a lot of enjoyment out of it. One of the best medical dramas of the 21st century, this show starring Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House will allow you to solve all sorts of medical problems and mysteries as you fold your kids' clothes that never really seem to get clean.

Grey's Anatomy (2005 - Present)

Since its debut in 2005, Grey’s Anatomy has combined elements of the medical drama genre with romance and sometimes action to create an experience like no other. If you’re looking for hundreds of hours of TV to help make the laundry go from a mound of madness to a stack of clothes you’ll soon forget to put away, this is the stuff.

MTV True Life (1998 - 2017)

MTV True Life was a long-running documentary series that chronicled pretty much every aspect of life for teenagers, adults, and everyone else. With dozens of episodes about everything from wrestling to odd obsessions, you’ll have a lot of variety when you’re folding the sheets.

How I Met Your Mother (2005 - 2014)

How I Met Your Mother has nine seasons of romance, bromance, chaos, and more twists and turns than anyone can count. That’s why it’s such a darn good show for the weekly (or monthly) laundry experience. Watch Ted Mosby fall in and out of love and back in it again as you contemplate your own life, or at least laundry decisions.

Netflix is still the king of the streaming world and the first place most people probably go when looking for something new to watch. It's not hard to find the Best movies on Netflix, but there's so much to be found there it can often cause option paralysis when it comes to trying to find something to watch. 

The first day of the month always brings an avalanche of new content. This month that meant that most of the modern DC movies, from Man of Steel to Birds of Prey joined the platform, giving viewers who don't also have Max access to those blockbusters. 

The first full week of December doesn't bring nearly the quantity of content, but there's no lack of quality, or at least potential quality, as several new movies and series arrive on Netflix. Whatever you happen to be looking for, there's plenty to recommend to any sort of viewer, from animated family shows to horror movies, to psychological dramas, here's what to check out this week on Netflix.

The Archies - December 7

We’ve seen numerous adaptations of the classic Archies comics over the years, most recently with Riverdale, which recast the decades-old characters in a more dramatic light. The twist in the new Netflix movie, The Archies however, may even top that. The movie looks to be filled with all the music and teen hijinks we’d otherwise expect from the likes of Archie and Jughead, but certainly, we’ve never seen anything quite like this before. The film is set in the 1960s, and in a town called Riversdale, but Riverdale is now located somewhere in India. The Hindi language film will put a truly unique twist on the age-old characters.  

Hilda: Season 3 - December 7

When Hilda first debuted on Netflix in 2018 it met with raves from both critics and fans of Luke Pearson’s graphic novels that the show is based on. The second season won the Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Animated Series, and now Hilda is back for a third season which will, unfortunately for fans, be the final one for the acclaimed series.  But while this may be the end, all expectations are Hilda will go out on a high note.

NAGA - December 7

The holiday season may not be the time that most people’s thoughts turn to horror, but for horror fans, Christmas may be coming a bit early. NAGA, which debuted earlier this year at the Toronto Film Festival to strong critical reception makes its debut on Netflix. The movie sees a woman stranded in the desert and trying to make it home, while attempting to avoid, among other things, a very angry camel.  While that may sound a little silly, NAGA looks like an absolutely harrowing ride that will be right up the alley for any horror fan.

My Life With The Walter Boys - December 7

My Life with the Walter Boys may not look like anything too special from the outside, just a fairly standard teen drama, but the new Netflix series is something of a culmination for a work that had a unique beginning. The novel on which the series is based was originally published on Wattpad, where it remained for over a decade, even after the story was picked up and published in novel form. 

World War II: From the Frontlines - December 7

We’ve all seen our fair share of World War II documentaries. One might expect there’s really nothing new to say or be seen regarding the event but the documentary series World War II: From the Frontlines, boasts original WWII footage that has been colorized and enhanced through modern technological means, so we’ve truly never seen World War II quite like this. If nothing else this new series should be worth a look from anybody interested in the topic just to see the footage in a new way.

The Great British Baking Show: Holidays: Season 6 - December 8

With the finale of the newest season of The Great British Baking Show having recently aired, fans don’t have to quit cold turkey, at least not quite yet. New episodes of The Great British Baking Show: Holidays arrive just in time to let fans have a little bit more fun with Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith. Since these episodes were actually originally aired at the end of 2022 and early 2023, co-host Matt Lucas will "return" as these were Lucas' actual final episodes before leaving the show. The episodes will see former contestants return for another shot at baking glory while attempting to avoid soggy bottoms.

Leave the World Behind - December 8

One of the more exciting projects on the Netflix movie schedule has been this one we've waited almost the whole year to get to. Based on the 2020 novel of the same name, Leave the World Behind stars Julia Roberts, who also produced the film alongside Barack Obama's Higher Ground Productions, and Ethan Hawke as a couple who rent a home, only to have the owners return and move back in during a massive unexplained blackout. Mahershala Ali and Kevin Bacon co-star in what looks to be a compelling and mysterious drama, written and directed by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail. 

Love And Monsters - December 9

A movie that is not new, but is new to Netflix, and quite possibly to you, is 2020's Love and Monsters, directed by Shawn Levy who is directing next year's Deadpool 3. The movie's release was a victim of the global pandemic, leading to it being largely overlooked in its VOD release. The movie stars The Maze Runner lead Dylan O'Brien as a man living in a post-apocalyptic world where the earth has been ravaged by mutated animals and insects. When he discovers the love of his life has survived the upheaval, he goes on a quest to reunite with her. It's equal parts hilarious, action-packed, and heartwarming, and a movie that should not be overlooked again.

Netflix has recently stated that it plans to make less original content going forward, with a focus on quality over quantity. But this is just part of what's being released this week on Netflix. Be sure to check out everything coming to Netflix to get the complete list of what's arriving this week and to get ahead of everything coming out in the weeks to come. 

I, like a lot of people, find a great deal of comfort viewing in The Great British Baking Show, or The Great British Bake Off, as it's known in its home country. When a new season of Baking Show comes on Netflix there’s almost nothing I’d rather be watching. This show has almost no stress, I love to watch what people create, and the camaraderie between the contestants is always heartwarming, even when somebody has to go home.

But I’m a few weeks behind on the actual Great British Baking Show (with its new host) because I recently discovered that my rarely-used Roku Channel app is where I can find episodes of Celebrity Baking Show, the episodes where famous people from Great Britain, and even the occasional Hollywood star, compete in the tent as a way to draw attention to charity. I’m going to be binge watching this until I’ve worked through all 10 seasons because I think I love it more than the main show. Here’s why…   

The Stakes Are Even Lower, Which Makes For Even Better Comfort Viewing

The Great British Baking Show is probably high stakes for a lot of people, it is a judged competition after all, but it's just not so for me. The fun of it is that while I might end up rooting for a particular baker, there's rarely, if ever, anybody I would not want to see win.

But to whatever degree I get into the competition of The Great British Baking Show show, Celebrity Baking Show has even lower stakes, so it's an even more relaxing viewing experience. While early seasons had a sort of playoff setup, where three groups of three competed, with the winners of each going against each other in a final, most seasons are just four or five episodes of one-off competitions. Each one has a winner and that's the end of it. There's barely enough time in an episode to pick a favorite. 

 Some Of The Challenges Are Hilariously Easy 

The contestants in The Great British Baking Show are not professionals; they are, as required by the rules, simply home bakers. However, there is a baseline of competency that contestants are expected to have, and by and large, they all prove that they have that. There may be types of baking that certain bakers are less familiar with, or simply less good at, but they know what they’re doing. Among the facts we've learned about Bake Off over the years is just how much work goes into making sure the contestants are ready for the show. 

Celebrity Baking Show makes no such assumption, and it’s made clear that some of these people do not bake. As such the challenges they are given are, to be honest, absurdly simple. The signature challenge in at least one episode of basically every season has been a tray bake. As in, make a tray of something, like brownies. That's it.

It’s certainly a bit of a shock when you’re used to seeing people in that tent make multilayered cakes with their eyes closed. Just make some brownies and don’t screw it up is the extent of the requirements. I am also not a baker, I have never made a cake in my life, but I have made a tray of brownies from scratch before. It’s the extent of my abilities, but I know how it’s done. Of course, what makes it all that much funnier is that a lot of these people can’t accomplish even that.

 Some Celebrities Literally Can’t Bake At All 

I don’t know what the process is to be chosen for The Great British Baking Show, but clearly steps are taken to be sure that everybody on it has knowledge and ability. However, celebrities are not given such a review. In one later season episode, a British boxing champion admits she didn’t even practice her bakes before the show, so what we watch her do on the show is the first baking of her entire life.

Funny enough, she still fairs better than some competitors. When a standard Baking Show contestant has things go bad, it usually means that they end up with a dreaded “soggy bottom,” or they attempt to do so much, that they are unable to finish what they are trying to accomplish. When a celebrity bake goes bad, there’s nothing to serve or what there is is just short of inedible.

If this was the normal Baking Show, I’d feel bad for the person and it would be hard to watch, but nobody who has never baked before is coming on the show with any illusions about their ability. 

Failure is A Lot Funnier Than The Standard Great British Baking Show, Thanks To The Competitors 

A lot of the contestants are professional comedians, and while a few of them do take the competition seriously, that doesn’t stop them from having a lot of fun while they do it. When somebody’s bake becomes an absolute travesty, they very much know it and usually have more than a few jokes that get the judges laughing. When Paul Hollywood says somebody has baked literally the worst cake ever created inside the tent, he’s laughing as he says it. He means it, but it’s still funny to all involved.

I hate watching people in reality shows fail. I get embarrassed and upset on their behalf and it’s just not fun, but on Celebrity Baking Show, the humor makes it okay. Nobody is exactly shocked when things bomb, and so there's always a good joke or two ready to defuse the situation.

Some Celebrities Can Actually Bake, Even If They Don’t Know It

But the other side of the coin is equally entertaining. Sometimes you discover that Teri Hatcher from Lois and Clark and Desperate Housewives is a really good baker, which is one of those things you just wouldn’t know if you didn’t watch the show. Not only did she specifically win her episode, but she got the famed “Hollywood Handshake,” something that is even rarer among the celebrities than the standard show, because yeah, a lot of them aren’t that great. 

Some turn out to be great bakers. Some discover that they enjoy baking, whether or not they are currently any good at it. If watching trainwrecks is less painful because the celebrities know they're going to do badly, then success is all the more impressive.

The Great British Baking Show is still one of the best reality shows on television. Between older seasons of The Great British Baking Show on the Roku Channel, and new seasons on Netflix, I have about as much of the show as I can handle for a while. But when I come to the end of the available episodes of Celebrity Baking Show, I will be a little disappointed, as it's been an even more entertaining experience than I expected.

The Great Christmas Bake Off 2023 will air on Christmas Eve (December 24) at 8.15pm GMT on free-to-air Channel 4 in the UK.

The Great British Bake Off Season 14 was shown on free-to-air Channel 4 in the UK, with its ten episodes being broadcast at 8pm GMT on Tuesdays. Having started on September 26, the final of Bake Off aired on November 28. 

If you prefer to watch online or aren't able to see episodes live, then you can watch The Great British Bake Off on the network's on-demand service now simply called Channel 4, which you can access on desktop and through a number of devices via its app. While watching any live TV in the UK requires a TV licence, you won't need one for watching on catch-up.

Last week, fans were gifted with one of the most heartwarming pictures imaginable when Ryan Reynolds visited the tent of the Great British Bake Off. Exactly why the Deadpool 3 star was there wasn’t exactly clear but, it turns out, he didn't arrive alone. Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood shared a picture of his own, which revealed that Reynolds' wife, Blake Lively, was also there, and it looks like Hollywood is ready to get a new judge at the table. 

That's right, it wasn’t just one celebrity, but a celebrity couple, who stopped by The Great British Bake Off. The picture of Blake Lively and Paul Hollywood is just as wonderful as the one of Ryan Reynolds with both judges. Lively previously got a virtual Hollywood handshake as she is a baker herself. So the two now meeting in person was probably quite special. At this point, who cares why they were there -- it’s just wonderful to see them having so much fun:

For a lot of people on both sides of the pond, The Great British Bake Off is the epitome of comfort viewing, and it seems that Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are among those that are big fans of the show. It's likely the two just stopped by because they are fans and, honestly, what better use of one's celebrity is there than using it to visit such a wonderful program?

The married couple are brand-new residents of the UK. The Proposal actor recently purchased a home near Wrexham in Wales so he can be closer to the soccer team he co-owns. His Deadpool threequel is also reportedly filming in the UK right now, so it’s possible the two just stopped by on a day that the leading had a break from production because they were in the area. (One wonders if other members of the Deadpool 3 cast might be quite jealous.) 

Of course, it’s also possible there’s a bit more going on. We might actually see Ryan Reynolds and or Blake Lively appear on the show or some other part of its associated programming, as Bake Off is basically a franchise unto itself at this point. We don’t usually see celebrities appear on the show, but we also don’t see stars like Lively or Reynolds visiting the tent all that often. So if you’ve got them, why not use them?

Of course, with all of the side hustles that Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have going on, the association between them and the show -- if there is one beyond just being fans -- could be anything. Perhaps the show is working with Reynolds' Maximum Effort ad agency or using his Aviation Gin for some sort of cross-promotion.

More than likely the pictures just represent fans taking advantage of an opportunity to visit a show they love, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s something just about all of us Bake Off devotees would do if given the chance. And at least we have these photos to give us that warm fuzzy feeling until the next season of Bake Off is finally here for us to enjoy. For some of us, life is just a series of dead periods in between episodes of The Great British Bake Off. It’s comfort viewing at its absolute finest, and if you don’t believe me, then maybe you’ll take the word of Ryan Reynolds. The Deadpool star recently posted a picture of himself in front of the iconic tent with hosts Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, and it is pure joy distilled into picture form.

Why was Ryan Reynolds visiting the Great British Bake Off? There’s no indication in the photo itself or Reynolds’ post as to why this picture now exists, but the fact that it does is just perfect. If you’re a fan of the Channel 4 and Netflix US series and you’re a fan of Reynolds, then this photo is the perfect way to start your Friday right. See what I mean? Delightful. 

It could just be that Ryan Reynolds is a big fan of The Great British Bake Off and decided to use some of his celebrity cred to visit the location. It’s something a lot of us would do if we could, and this movie star certainly can. Reynolds now owns a home outside Wrexham, the town in Wales where the soccer team he owns, the recently-promoted Wrexham AFC, is located. It’s about a three-and-a-half-hour drive between Wrexham and where Bake Off is filmed, which is a bit of a drive, but it’s a lot closer than most American fans of the show are. Of course, Deadpool 3 is currently filming in the UK, so it's possible Reynolds was even closer.

One also has to wonder: Could Reynolds appear in the next season of the series? Bake Off doesn’t usually have celebrities show up in the middle of episodes, but it could still happen. Maybe one of the hosts got sick and they needed an emergency replacement. Or maybe we have it backward, and Paul and Prue are set to join the Deadpool 3 cast; now that is a movie I want to see. 

However, some answers may be found in the identity of the woman who took the picture. Reynolds’ post identifies Sofia Trevaglia as the photographer. She is Reynolds’ personal assistant on several of his films, but her LinkedIn profile lists her official position as an employee of Maximum Effort, the advertising company founded by Ryan Reynolds, which is just one of his many side hustles. 

It’s just possible that Bake Off has become an account for the firm, which could mean we could see advertisements for Bake Off in the future that were produced by Reynolds’ company, and the actor frequently appears in the ads his company creates. That would be something incredible to see.

Whatever situation led to this picture existing, and it's likely it is just a famous fan visiting the set of a show he loves, the "hug of pure serotonin" is one that you can feel just looking at it. Reynolds is clearly a fan and is just happy to be there, and even the frequently stoic Paul Hollywood actually looks star-struck.

The Future TV Presenter Got Her Start On The British Satirical Comedy Series Palace Hill 

Though there will probably be some Netflix subscribers who will be meeting Alison Hammond for the first time when new Great British Baking Show episodes begin to drop in the near future, the longtime host of This Morning has been on television sets across the pond for more than 30 years now. It all got started for the future TV presenter back in 1988 when she appeared on the British satirical comedy program, Palace Hill.

The series, which started out as a segment on the children’s sketch show, Your Mother Wouldn’t Like it, parodying BBC drama series Grange Hill, eventually became its own entity. The show would spoof political figures of the era like Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, as well as the Royal Family. When speaking with Metro about the series on which she played an American character named Eskimo, Hammond said she wished Netflix would revive the series, saying she didn’t understand why ITV stopped it in 1990. 

Alison Hammond Was A Contestant On Big Brother UK Back In 2002

There have been multiple incarnations of the Big Brother reality competition series over the years, including the long-running British version that has been on TV since July 2000 (it actually started one day before the American series). The series, which ended its original run in 2018 before being revived years later, per Variety, has seen its fair share of notable house guests, including Alison Hammond, who appeared on the show just before landing a gig on This Morning.

Hammond was a member of the third season of Big Brother back in the spring of 2002, but her time in the house didn’t last all that long. According to BBC News, Hammond was the second contestant to be evicted, finishing in 11th place overall.

It wasn’t all bad news though, as the following year, Hammond landed joined the British morning news program, This Morning. Hammond started out doing small stories and interviews, but has risen all the way to being one of the main Friday presenters, per The Sun.

Back in October 2017, when they were out promoting their then-upcoming sci-fi epic, Blade Runner 2049, the film’s stars, Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, appeared on ITV’s This Morning for what would presumably be a typical interview on the morning news show. The actual interview was far more entertaining. 

The interview, which starts off with Hammond admitting she had never seen the original Blade Runner, admittedly could have gone off the rails and very awkward, but it was anything but. Just watch the magic as it unfolds:

Ford and Gosling’s reactions to Hammond admitting she hadn’t seen one of the best sci-fi movies of all time are absolutely brilliant, as is everything that follows. Though she doesn’t get a proper question in, and they don’t get a chance to really answer, this is still one of the greatest interviews of all time, solely because of their chemistry. The little bottles of booze don’t hurt though.

Alison Hammond Made Her Feature Film Debut In the 2018 Animated Comedy Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation

Though she had appeared in a number of scripted TV shows, in addition to her This Morning hosting duties and other appearances throughout her career, Alison Hammond didn’t make her feature film debut until 2018 when she landed a small voice role in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation.

In May 2018, the TV personality took to her Instagram account (a well of comedy and good vibes that never seems to run dry) to announce her involvement in the animated picture from Sony Pictures, saying she was excited to work alongside Adam Sandler and Selena Gomez. Hammond would go on to voice Frankenginger in the UK version of the box office smash hit, one that some consider one of the best entries in the Hotel Transylvania franchise. Tara Strong would go on to voice the character in the US release.

The TV Presenter Confirmed Her Great British Bake Off Hosting Gig In A Hilarious And Unique Way

Seeing Alison Hammond join The Great British Baking Show as a new host shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who watched her remarkable appearance on The Great Stand Up To Cancer Bake Off in February 2022, as she looked to be in her comfort zone in the competition (much like her Blade Runner 2049 interview a few years earlier). A little more than a year later, Hammond would go from contestant to host, which she confirmed in the most unique and on-brand way on her Instagram account:

With figurines and a stage made out of what appears to be fondant icing, Hammond created a model press conference to announce her hosting duties. If her tenure on the show is anything like this Instagram video (and her time on the show as a celebrity contestant), then The Great British Baking Show is going to be a hoot and a holler next season.

We can expect a lot of great things to come with the addition of Alison Hammond on The Great British Baking Show. And though we don’t yet know when the show will return, we’ll have it on our 2023 TV schedule as soon as the date drops.

Released as part of the 2022 TV schedule, The Great British Baking Show is always a fun time for fans of cooking shows as well as baking shows. We watch some amazing bakers create some delectable items that I’m sure most of us would love to taste. Sadly, they haven’t made a show yet where you can taste through the TV; what a shame. 

But, for those who religiously watch the show, have you ever wondered exactly how the elimination game works? Believe it or not, it’s actually quite simple, and something I think anyone who enjoys these cooking competition shows would like to learn. 

For The Signature Bakes, The Judges Use A Scoring System

Alongside Paul Hollywood, judge Prue Leith has made some amazing choices in picking who should win and who shouldn’t, but for the Signature Bakes round – which is known to be the first round that bakers are able to show off their personality a little more – a score-based system is often used. Leith spoke to E! News about how it’s done on the show:

It’s in this section that Leith and Hollywood will score whatever the bakers have created, but they “just don’t tell the bakers about it.” From there, they make their decisions. 

For The Technical Bakes, The Finished Products Are Judged By How Close They Resemble The Original Bake

The scoring system for the second round, the Technical Bake, is a little more ambiguous, as no one has really quite explained it yet. For those who don’t know, the Technical Bake of the competition, according to the official website, is all about precision, where bakers are given a basic recipe with the “same ingredients and instructions” and have to go at it to make the finished product. 

To be honest, it sounds a lot easier said than done, because sometimes, the recipe may seem basic to the judges but requires some techniques or knowledge that the bakers might not have, so that’s where the challenge is. The closest it looks to the finished product, the closer you get to moving on to the second round. 

Something else that is fun to know is that Leith and Hollywood don’t bake the cakes that are used in the technical round or really any round in the show – that’s actually all thanks to their home economics team. A little The Great British Baking Show fun-fact for you.

For The Showstopper Bakes, If They’re Stuck, The Judges Evaluate Every Bake The Person Has Done

The final round of the show is always the biggest one – the Showstopper Bake, where bakers are given free reign to show off their skills and talents. Leith said that sometimes, this round especially can be the hardest, because sometimes there are two contestants that are so close to each other, they need to revisit the tape and look at their past baking experiences in the competition in order to figure out who wins:

We’re not sure how the finale works in terms of scoring and elimination, but since this is how it’s done throughout the whole competition, you can use this as sort of a blueprint for the finale, if you’re ever curious. 

While there are so many great holiday-themed baking shows to watch or even just regular baking shows to enjoy, The Great British Baking Show has always remained a popular one – and now, you have a little bit of insight into how those winners are chosen.  

The Great British Bake Off, is a show known for being one of the best reality shows on TV, and its friendly and undramatic nature. However, when controversy does crop up its always fairly odd drama. From the backlash about a squirrel’s penis, to some viewers being offended by Johnny Depp, the controversy surrounding this show is always surprising. Now, there is backlash because of a story told in Bake Off judge Prue Leith’s memoir, about her mother asking her to drown a litter of kittens that had just been born. However, the baking judge has now provided a response and some clarity about the whole situation.

Following the release of an excerpt from her book I’ll Try Anything Once in The Huffington Post UK telling the kitten story, people shared their thoughts on social media, calling Leith’s actions “disturbing behavior” and questioning if she should still be a judge on the incredibly popular show. In lew of all this backlash, Leith responded, telling People:

Along with this comment, she also explained that she couldn’t “bear the thought” that people really thought she “would want to drown kittens.” While she was specifically called out on social media, what really bothered the chef was those who threatened to never watch Bake-Off again.

Leith went on to provide context as to why she was asked to drown kittens. She said in the early 1940s it was common practice in South Africa, where she was living at the time, to drown kittens to “maintain the cat population.” She continued, saying she doesn't really know why she was asked to watch, but she did recall the story of what happened when she was 11, explaining: 

In her book, Leith wrote that her mother had tried to find homes for the kittens, but when she was unable to she decided to drown them. When the author found out about her mother’s plans, she tried to stop them. However, her mom responded by saying “it has to be done,” and Leith had the image of the “poor dead creatures” in her head for “weeks.” 

It sounds like Leith was traumatized by this experience, and I don’t think viewers should be so quick to stop watching the show before hearing her whole story.

Thousands Of People Apply To The Show Each Year

Unsurprisingly, with a big reality show like this, thousands of people submit applications and look to be a part of The Great British Baking Show. In a behind-the-scenes look at the series from BBC Good Food, Sam Beddoes, the series producer, went into the process of selecting contestants, and how many people often apply to the show:

Talk about an intense audition process! I don’t think I could ever go through something like that, no matter how much I like to bake - I guess that’s why this series is one of the best reality shows on television. 

The Contestants Also Have To Meet With A Psychologist To Show They’re “Ready” For The Challenge 

Just because you might get through the initial screening process of the show and get the chance to bake in front of cameras, that doesn't mean you’re instantly a contestant on The Great British Baking Show. 

According to Insider, which did an interview with former contestants, you have to go through a psychological evaluation before you’re even on camera to see if you can handle the heat - pun intended. 

Ali Imdad and Antony Amourdoux, two former contestants on the show, confirmed that they, alongside anyone else that was chosen, had to meet with a psychologist prior to being picked to analyze if they can handle the stress of competing, as well as the chance of being “catapulted into fame” from the popularity of the show. From these results, the final group is whittled down to 12 or 13 accepted applicants. 

Contestants Also Need To Have Full Recipe Plans Ready In Advance  

If you think that you can just come into this show and not have a plan ready to go, then you’re not ready for The Great British Baking Show. 

In a behind-the-scenes look at the series from The Guardian, they revealed that the contestants must have at least “10 signature and showstopper bake recipes they would need if they made it all the way to final.” 

These are then studied by Chloe Avery, a food producer who is part of a team responsible for all of the edible portions of the series. 

The Tent Can Get Quite Hot

In a question and answer video with Buzzfeed, former contestants all collectively agreed that the famous tent in which The Great British Baking Show is filmed can get very hot. 

Season 9 runner-up, Kim-Joy Hewlett, had a simple answer to "How hot does the tent get?"

Season 3 winner, John Whaite, agreed. 

Season 9 quarter-finalist, Manon Lagreve, also agreed, adding in her own personal story to the mix of when she baked and how hot it was.  

For those who don’t know, 34 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit is 93.2 degrees. Damn, talking about literally working in a sauna! But, I bet those desserts were delicious. 

Episodes Take Days To Complete, Besides Just The Baking Part 

The Guardian article also revealed that baking takes several days to complete. But, there’s much more that goes into each episode of The Great British Baking Show, where it’ll take longer than just a couple of days to finish an episode, usually because of the technical team that take several days before an episode starts to make sure that everything is working properly. 

Georgia May, who is one of the leaders of the technical team, revealed how much work goes into each episode days beforehand, noting that they're "in charge of everything to do with the food and the equipment."

Georgia later said that in order to properly test the ovens, they make a dozen Victorian sponge cakes and cook them all at the same time to make sure each oven is working perfectly. Then, they have to make sure they are level. After testing the baking supplies, they need to get ingredients for each of the contestants. 

And, sometimes, contestants can make changes to what they want, and will request it the next day for Georgia's team to get. 

Don’t Worry, Because The Baked Goods Don’t Go To Waste

Both The Great British Baking Show - and its holiday counterpart, The Great British Baking Show - Holidays - create so many amazing dishes that you just wish you could jump through the screen and eat them yourselves. Sometimes, you might be wondering if all these delicious treats go to waste, but thankfully, that isn’t the case. 

In the previously mentioned Insider article, former contestant Armourdoux revealed that the treats that are made on the show are actually often fed to cast and crew members:

I mean, with how good that food normally looks, I’d be digging into it too. It makes me want to try my hand at cooking more.  

The Judges Don’t Ever Make The Signature Bakes 

The Birmingham Mail revealed that the judges for The Great British Baking Show don’t actually ever eat their cakes that are shown off. A rep for Love Productions, the production company behind the series, said that their judges, specifically Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, do not bake their cakes the day of filming, due to time constraints:

It Sometimes Takes Time For The Judges To Try The Showstopper Desserts 

In the same Buzzfeed question-and-answer video mentioned before, the contestants all revealed that the judges don’t actually taste their showstopper desserts as soon as they're done. In fact, it takes more than a half hour sometimes for the judges to actually try it. Whaite confirmed this, and said:

You could watch a whole episode of television during that time period of waiting. I don’t think I could ever be patient enough.

While there’s no release date for the next season of The Great British Baking Show set just yet, I’m sure that the desserts will be just as delicious-looking and the tent will be just as hot. I can’t wait to see what incredible showstopper desserts are served next on this amazing cooking competition show. 

It’s that time of year again, where we’re all gathered around the table with our loved ones, talking about our years and about the holidays, while eating some good food. One of my favorite things to do during the holidays is bake, from cakes to cookies to specially themed desserts that I only really make during this time of year. But sometimes, I just need a little bit of inspiration from the baking gods on what to make.

That’s where this list comes in handy, as these are some of the best holiday baking shows that come on during the Christmas season, and might aid you a bit to figure out what to make for your next holiday party. From popular shows like Nailed It to entire competitions themed around the holidays, here is where you can watch these shows streaming right now. 

Nailed It! Holiday (Netflix)

In this Netflix original show, hosted by comedian Nicole Byer (who actually just got her first Netflix comedy special), Nailed It! is a baking competition that lets three amateur bakers compete against each other to replicate some cool-looking baking creations that have taken hours to mold and carefully construct. Only these bakers don’t have that much experience, and they only have a little bit of time to recreate it. 

I’ve personally always adored Nailed It because it makes me feel like my baking is not that bad in comparison to some of the crazy creations that are featured on this show, and Nailed It! Holiday is just as zany. From entertaining creations of Santa that looks like he was melting to penguins that have the most miserable look on their faces, these bakers try their damndest to make these cookies or cakes look good - often falling apart at the seams. 

However, Nailed It! Holiday is the perfect show to watch if you not only want a little bit of inspiration, but a bit of a self-esteem boost, because if these people can bake these monstrosities, surely you can bake that pre-packaged bag of cookie dough. Definitely one of the best baking shows out there.

Sugar Rush Christmas (Netflix)

In this spinoff of the baking show, Sugar Rush Christmas puts four bakers up against each other in the ultimate, high-stakes bake-off, participating in three rounds. We get to see Christmas-themed cupcakes, jolly confections, and high-flying cakes worthy of Rudolph himself, with one group getting eliminated each round. In the end, the winning pair receive $10,000. 

I absolutely love Sugar Rush Christmas. While I do like the wackiness of Nailed It! Holiday, I’ve always had a personal place in my heart for this show because it truly takes so much skill to do what these competitors do. They have so little time to create and bake these amazing creations and yet somehow, nine times out of ten, they always end up looking fantastic. 

Another thing I love about Sugar Rush Christmas are the types of things they create, from interesting combinations of flavors when it comes to cupcakes, to intricately designed sugar art, to fantastical cakes. There’s so much here to love and unpack, and for fans who need some inspiration, this is one of the best to watch.

Holiday Gingerbread Showdown (Discovery Plus)

In this Food Network show, Holiday Gingerbread Showdown is exactly what you would expect it to be - several artists, whose specialty is gingerbread, come together to battle for the crown of the ultimate gingerbread champion. Whoever can build the best gingerbread house - or, rather gingerbread anything - wins $25,000, as well as having an article done on them in the Food Network Magazine.

I feel like when it comes to gingerbread houses, we always need a little help. I love the Christmas season, from Christmas movies to singing to even shopping for presents, but gingerbread houses is always the one thing I sorta fall flat on. But the Holiday Gingerbread Showdown fixes that right away. Not only does it give you inspiration for your own little gingerbread houses, but these baking creations are fantastic. 

I don’t mince words when I say that. I’m dead serious. Sometimes I stare at these in wonder and think how on earth could this all be made of gingerbread? Even better, how on earth is all of this edible? I’m the person who would probably use hot glue to somehow stick my gingerbread walls together and yet these people make these all edible. I’m in awe of their talent.

The Great British Baking Show: Holidays (Netflix)

This popular Netflix show is always a hit. The Great British Baking Show follows a group of bakers, typically four, who are competing to see who is the ultimate baker. In this spinoff of the show, the judges critique the bakers on their creativity with their Christmas and holiday concoctions, from their talented cupcakes to realistic food cakes to anything else. 

I feel like it was only a matter of time before The Great British Baking Show got a holiday spinoff, and it’s just as fun as the original. I think what makes The Great British Baking Show: Holidays such a fun show to watch is not even just for the baking. Yes, these creations are really cool and you will get inspiration, but what I love about it is the personalities behind the baking. 

The bakers are often very personable, sharing their stories and saying what baking means to them, while also including some entertaining and shady moments that keep the viewers on their toes. The judges are some of the best critical yet hilarious ones I’ve seen on TV yet, and they make me want to keep watching with their charming charisma, valued criticism of the baking creations, and more.

Christmas Cookie Challenge (Discovery Plus)

Next up, we have the Christmas Cookie Challenge. In this fun competition show, a couple of bakers are chosen to show off their baking skills, with the chance of winning $10,000 if named the champion. With themes of all kinds and endless creativity, it’s a race to see who is the ultimate holiday cookie master. 

Look - we all make Christmas cookies. Of Hanukkah cookies. Or Kwanzaa cookies - heck, any kind of cookie during the holidays. Usually, they’re simple and easy to make and a crowd-pleaser no matter who you serve. The Christmas Cookie Challenge takes it to another level with some of these cookies. 

Some of these cookies are baked into trees, or become cars, or houses - sometimes I’m still stunned that these are regular cookies and not just gingerbread because it’s impressive what’s done with just a little bit of cookie dough. It makes me want to learn how to cook and bake more because I want to create these crazy creations.

Baking It (Peacock)

Watch two of the most hilarious comedians in today's TV world turn to hosting a holiday baking championship. In Baking It, Maya Rudolph and Andy Samberg have several baking teams compete against each other to create some of the most wonderfully-themed baking items you could imagine, all from the hilarious themes that are given to them. In the end, the team who ends up winning takes home a good amount of money. 

While Baking It feels like every other baking show, having the same amount of contestants go against each other and make it 'till the end to win the ultimate prize, what really makes this such a good one to binge are the hosts themselves. I need to see Maya Rudolph and Andy Samberg host way more baking competitions because these two are surprisingly good at it and have great chemistry. The creations that the bakers come up with too are really cool and will definitely give you some inspiration for your next baking session.

Holiday Baking Championship (Discovery Plus)

Lastly, we have the Holiday Baking Championship. This yearly competition brings several bakers together to make interesting holiday treats, full of different types of quirks and cool decorations, all culminating in the opportunity to be crowned the Holiday Baking Champion - and possibly win $50,000. 

If you want the ultimate baking show to watch during the holidays, this is the one. While a lot of the other choices on this list focus on one baking treat or have a smaller competition, this is the Godfather version of baking competitions. Featuring a nice panel of judges and super talented bakers, the types of things that are created in this show blow me away each year I watch it. 

I mean, Saturday Night Live even did a parody of it with comedy legend himself, Eddie Murphy. That’s how you know it’s an amazing show.

God, just writing about this is making me hungry. While you find some good new baking shows to watch and ring in the holiday season, I’m going to go and attempt to make gingerbread from scratch. Now, where was my flour again? 

2021 is almost at an end, and it’s closing out strong for many streaming services. As always, Netflix is bringing the heat and has some of its best programming of the year on deck and ready to prep us for 2022. What’s better, there’s stuff that’s entirely unrelated to the holiday season, just in case subscribers are reaching holiday burnout. 

Of course, some people can’t get enough of Christmas, so rest assured that for all the options this season, Netflix still has some holiday offerings worth checking out. Overall, I’d say there are at least nine spectacular originals coming this December that need checking out, so let’s dive in and figure out why!

Lost in Space (Final Season) - 12/1

The good news is that Lost in Space is back for Season 3, but unfortunately, the ride ends there. The Netflix series enters its final season at the start of December and will feature the Robinsons attempting to save Alpha Centauri from a robot invasion. First, they’ll have to reunite, so expect this series to really pull out the thrills in its final episodes!

Coming Out Colton - 12/3

The Bachelor’s Colton Underwood surprised many when he came out as a gay man, mainly because they saw him pine for the love of many eligible women on national television. Now, in Netflix’s Coming Out Colton, audiences will get a chance to see Underwood’s journey as a gay man and confront his past while attempting to find his place in the LGBTQ+ community. I can see Bachelor fans interested in seeing this one, as well as anyone genuinely curious about the next chapter for Underwood.

​​The Great British Baking Show: Holidays (Season 4) - 12/3

The Great British Baking Show is one of the best cooking shows on television, and adding the holidays on top of that only makes it better. Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood welcome back some familiar faces on this holiday edition of the show set to arrive on Netflix in early December. I know I’ll be watching with a bag of snacks next to me, and who knows? I may even find the inspiration to cook a little after watching!

Saturday Morning All Star Hits! - 12/10

If you’re someone who gets nostalgic about the '80s and '90s era of Saturday morning cartoons, this is something to look out for. This irreverent adult-animation series comes from Saturday Night Live’s Kyle Mooney and Ben Jones. Mooney plays twins in a live-action hybrid series that mimics the iconic era of children’s television that adults today grew up with. I’ve always been a fan of Mooney’s work, so I’m hoping this series lives up to the awesome expectations I’m building in my head.

Selling Tampa - 12/15

Selling Sunset thrives as a popular home show on Netflix, and like other successful home shows, it’s getting a number of spinoffs. Selling Tampa is the newest one arriving on Netflix in mid-December and will follow a Tampa all-Black female real estate agent firm called Allure Realty. It’s all the fun of Selling Sunset but in Tampa! I typically only watch these kinds of shows when I’m moving, and I’m not trying to pack my bags just yet, but home show fans will definitely want to give this one a try.

The Witcher (Season 2) - 12/17

One of Netflix’s biggest original shows is back for another season, and I don’t know about you, but I’m thrilled to see Henry Cavill kicking ass and taking names as Geralt of Rivia. What’s even better is that Cavill recently confirmed he’s committed to sticking with the series’ seven-year plan, which means there’s a lot more of The Witcher to come over the years. Now would be a great time to rewatch or catch up on Season 1, which I’ll definitely need to do because I got a bit lost watching at first. 

Emily in Paris (Season 2) - 12/22

Here’s a fun fact about Emily in Paris that I love to bring up every time I see the show title: if you say the series name the way Paris is supposed to be pronounced in French, it rhymes! I’m not sure that will be addressed in Season 2 of Emily in Paris, and the creator teased that Emily will have some tough decisions ahead of her. Fans will, of course, be thrilled to see Emily’s continuing adventures, which will probably feature more of France undermining her American ideal of what the country should be. It doesn’t seem like this series is a glowing advertisement for France!

Cobra Kai (Season 4) - 12/31

Cobra Kai Season 4 will help ring in the new year with the series’ most significant challenge yet. Johnny and Daniel joined forces in an attempt to put a stop to John Kreese’s twisted version of Cobra Kai. Unfortunately, we already know that Kreese will get back up in the form of Terry Silver, who has a knack for seeking out the most brutal recruits and fighters. I’m not quite sure who stands the best chance at winning the All-Valley Tournament out of all the main characters at the moment, but I am optimistic for Miguel’s comeback after he gains some more strength. My second choice is definitely Robby Keene, but man, what a downer that would be if he won at this point.

Queer Eye (Season 6) - 12/31

Queer Eye fans know exactly what the show is about at this point, and as a fan, I can say I’m certainly not sick of it. The Fab 5 are back again looking to revamp the lives of folks who need just a little sprucing up, and they’re headed to Austin, Texas this season to change some hearts and minds in the Lone Star state. I’m curious to see how the boys adapt to life there and whether they learn some things along the way about living deep in the heart of Texas. 

Netflix subscribers can catch all these shows and more on the platform beginning in December. I’m looking forward to a good month of original content to close out 2021 and hoping that 2022 is even more loaded with iconic originals that will make another year just fly by.

Something I love to do when the fall time comes around is bake. From pumpkin pies to cookies, to breads to anything that pleases my sweet tooth. While doing so, I often love to watch shows about baking, sometimes getting ideas, other times just being purely impressed by some of the talents these bakers have. 

While I could spend a lot of my time watching some of the best cooking competition shows to on television, sometimes, all I want is to see some awesome sweet, funny personalities, and dazzling creations that will make me think of applying to culinary school. If you’re looking for some of the best baking shows to watch, check out some of these picks, all of which are streaming. 

Nailed It! (2018 - Present) 

In this Emmy-nominated series, three no-so-great bakers face off against each other in Nailed It! They are tasked with recreating fantastical baking creations, often ending in some pretty humorous or gross-looking cakes, cupcakes, cookies, or anything else, all while trying to compete for a $10,000 cash prize. 

Nailed It! is one of those shows that makes me so happy because it puts average bakers against each other. No one is brilliant at baking except for the pastry chef they have to help them, and everyone is there really just to have a good time. Plus, Nicole Byer (who was in the Vivo voice cast recently) is amazingly funny and brings this charm to the show that I don’t think anyone else could bring as a host. She’s truly a gem.

Cake Boss (2009 - 2017)

Cake Boss is a classic TLC show, taking place at Carlo’s bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey. It’s an Italian-American bake shop, owned and operated by  Buddy Valastro and his family, serving up amazing creations and pretty funny commentary. 

To be honest, Cake Boss was one of the first shows that got me into baking in the first place. I was astounded by some of the cakes they would create, from ferris wheels, to college cakes and race tracks, it seemed that nothing was too big of a challenge for them. For any young (or old) baker, it’ll inspire you to reach into the depths of your imagination and create something amazing.

Be Our Chef (2020)

In this Disney+ original series, Be Our Chef is a Disney-themed cooking competition, hosted by Angela Kinsey. In each episode, two families go head to head in a themed cooking challenge right at Walt Disney World. 

I may be a little biased because I love anything Disney and have for a long time, but when it's paired up with baking (and cooking)? Sign me up. Be Our Chef is not only a great baking competition filled with some pretty interesting creations, but a wonderful family show that illustrates the power of working together as a family, and the things you can achieve. Plus, Angela Kinsey (known from The Office cast) is a great host and brings a smile to every episode, alongside her charismatic personality.

The Great British Baking Show (2010 - Present) 

In this popular British television show, The Great British Baking Show is a competition where a group of amateur bakers compete against each other in a series of rounds, trying to outdo the rest and impress the judges with their culinary skills. 

I feel like everyone has heard of The Great British Baking Show. To me, it’s one of the best shows on Netflix, because I love the judges. The way they talk and work together flows wonderfully and their chemistry is perfect, creating funny moments that will make you chuckle, as well. One of the other things I love about this show is that these are, again, amateur bakers. They aren’t pros or anything like that - but want to show their skills, and I can appreciate someone seriously stepping out of their comfort zone to create something astounding.

Zumbo’s Just Desserts (2016 - Present)

Moving on, we take a look at another baking competition. In Zumbo’s Just Desserts, master baker and dessert creator, Adriano Zumbo, invites 12 amateur bakers to compete for $100,000 and the chance for one of their baking creations to be features in Zumbo’s stores, as well as to be named the Zumbo’s Just Desserts champion. 

Whenever I’ve watched this show, I’ve always felt that Zumbo’s Just Desserts was the baking version of Hell’s Kitchen. No, Zumbo doesn’t curse out or insult his contestants like Gordan Ramsey does, but there are still high stakes with a huge prize and the chance of a lifetime for their work to be featured, which means the battle is tough. It’s definitely a great competition show - and awesome to watch for bakers who want to see some truly outstanding designs.

Cupcake Wars (2009 - 2018) 

In this popular baking show, Cupcake Wars features four contestants who compete over three rounds, with one getting eliminated each round for the winning team to receive $10,000, and the opportunity to be featured in an upcoming event. 

Cupcake Wars was one of those baking shows that seemed to go on forever, with more than ten seasons under its belt. And, honestly, it’s well deserved. Some of the cupcakes that these contestants would create are truly mind-blowing, and the way they worked to make them into displays of all kinds is the kind of creativity I think we all wish we had. Everyone who’s on this show is so talented. It makes me want to bake some cupcakes now.

Halloween Baking Championship (2015 - Present)

Seasonal programming is pretty common for baking shows, often with them creating spinoffs for holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving, but my favorite is the Halloween Baking Championship. In this Food Network show, bakers are put head to head to see who can create the spookiest, creepiest dessert, and the winner gets $25,000. 

Look, I literally opened this up by saying I love the fall, including Halloween. I love watching the best horror movies or even family-friendly Halloween movies, and usually, that is paired with baking some Halloween treats. Halloween Baking Championship is the perfect companion for someone who loves baking but wants to be amazed and creeped out at the same time, from a cupcake that looks like a spider to chocolate cockroaches that might not look good to eat, but are delicious, this show offers it all.

Baketopia (2021 - Present)

In this HBO Max original, Baketopia is hosted by Rosanna Pansino, a big YouTuber known for her baking skills. The show puts bakers up against each other in two rounds, called “tiers,” to see who is the ultimate baker and will receive $10,000. 

Baketopia isn’t the most creative of all the baking shows out there, meaning you will likely see similar challenges elsewhere. But, I do have to give credit where credit is due, because these are serious bakers that are on this show, and some of the things they bake are astonishing. Each round usually has some sort of theme and the contestants never seem to miss. Plus, Rosanna Pansino has an adorable, quirky charm about her that makes her the perfect host.

Sugar Rush (2018 - Present) 

Netflix really does love its baking shows, because now we take a look at Sugar Rush. In this Netflix original series, four professional teams of two are competing against each other in a baking competition for a prize of $10,000, competing in rounds composed of cupcakes, confections, and cakes. 

Sugar Rush is not for amateurs, I’ll tell you that. While there are some shows on here where you may think, “I can make that at home,” Sugar Rush is purely for you to gawk and marvel at some of the items that these bakers make. My personal favorite round is confections - sometimes, they make stuff completely out of sugar. They end up looking like sculptures. How? It’s crazy the skill these bakers have.

Nadiya Bakes (2020 - Present) 

Finally, the relaxing baking show, Nadiya Bakes, is hosted by Nadiya Hussain, who won The Great British Baking Show in 2015. She celebrates her joy of creating and sharing her favorite homemade cakes, pastries, and others items while also creating new recipes inspired by other bakers. 

While many of these shows are competitions, Nadiya Bakes isn't, which is what makes it so relaxing. I feel like this show is the perfect series to watch in the background while you’re working or just trying to chill. Nadiya is sweet to watch, and her honest joy of baking will bring a smile to your face, and how much she truly enjoys it. It’s always pleasing to see which creation she tries to make next - and how you can make it easily at home.

During these many months of quarantine, we’ve all been stuck at home, trying to stay safe while binge-watching so many TV shows that it’s sometimes hard to keep track, from fantasy series to some of the best shows on Amazon Prime or Hulu. However, one thing I’ve learned that I love is actually cooking shows - specifically, cooking competitions.

There’s just something about the competitiveness of contestants and some of the amazing (or not so amazing) food items they make, to the prizes at the very end - these cooking competitions always seem to capture my eye, and have also made me want to be a better cook. From classics like Hell’s Kitchen and Top Chef, to newer ones like Sugar Rush and Nailed It!, these are some of the best cooking competition shows that you can stream right now if you’re looking for some good TV and some good food.

Hell’s Kitchen (Hulu)

In this popular cooking competition show, several chefs of various levels compete on the red or blue team in Hell’s Kitchen, cooking for celebrity chef Gordan Ramsey. The chefs are eliminated challenge by challenge, until one is crowned with a massive cash prize, and the cooking opportunity of a lifetime.

This has always been my favorite cooking competition show. There’s just something about it, which explains why it’s been running for 20 seasons now. From the very creative challenges, to the chemistry between contestants, to the memes that Gordan Ramsey’s anger can produce, you can never quite beat it. Now, where is the lamb sauce?!

Halloween Wars (Discovery+)

Food Network has come out with some awesome cooking competition shows, and Halloween Wars is one of the best. Five teams are made up of cake sculptures, sugar artists, and pumpkin carvers, who are pitted against each other to produce the ultimate Halloween display and win a cash prize of $50,000.

Look, I freaking love Halloween. I love watching the best horror movies, I adore the Halloween franchise, I will spend hours baking Halloween treats when this time of year comes around, so you know I had to include a great show like this. What really makes this one stand out is the inclusion of professional pumpkin carvers. You never really think of them as someone who could be on a food competition show, but they are actually phenomenal, and give this holiday-themed show a charm that none of the others have.

Sugar Rush (Netflix)

Sugar Rush is certainly a standard cooking competition show. I personally don’t think that there’s any crazy razzle dazzle that’s added to it. But, what I really love about Sugar Rush are the creations that these bakers come up with. They are truly outstanding, with so much personality and thought put into everything, from even the tiniest cupcake to their biggest cakes. It’s like art but on another level, because sometimes you can’t even believe that some of their things are made with food. They’re all super talented.

Guy’s Grocery Games (Discovery+)

Hosted by chef Guy Fieri, Guy’s Grocery Games features four chefs competing in a three-round elimination contest, cooking good with ingredients found at a grocery store, while Fieri poses unusual challenges for them. The winning chef of each episode can earn up to $20,000.

What I like about Guy’s Grocery Games the most is definitely the host himself, Guy Fieri. He has such a creative mind which makes these challenges that he gives these chefs so fun. From certain price limits to weight limits, to crazy dishes and food that chefs can’t even touch, his challenges are always entertaining.

Top Chef (Peacock)

In this classic cooking competition, Top Chef features chefs competing against each other in many culinary challenges, who are then judged by a panel of professional chefs and other notables from the food and wine industry, with a contestant (or more) getting eliminated each episode.

Top Chef is an excellent example of what a reality cooking competition should look like. Amazing food, awesome contestants, valuable feedback from the judges - and the guest judges themselves are amazing. We’re talking about big stars in the culinary world, like Wolfgang Puck, Emeril Lagasse, Graham Elliot and many others. There’s a reason why there are so many spin offs of this show after many years on the air. It’s truly awesome.

Iron Chef America (Discovery+)

In this adaptation of the Japanese show of the same name, Iron Chef America features a new competitor each episode, who is competing against one of the resident “Iron Chefs” in a one-hour long cook-off based on secret ingredients, or a theme, or other big surprises.

I think what I like about Iron Chef America is that it doesn’t hold itself back from being just a standard cooking competition. Instead of putting amateur cooks up against one another, they are putting regular people up against some of the best chefs in the world. It creates this air of suspense to see if someone is actually going to beat them, out-flavor them, or do anything that might get them to be the next Iron Chef. Alton Brown is an incredible host, and really pushes along the competition with charisma and style - and some great cooking skills to boot.

Masterchef (Hulu)

Another Gordon Ramsey-created project, Masterchef collects several talented unknown chefs in a long competition to see who is going to become the next Masterchef, win a large cash prize, and possibly the culinary chance of a lifetime, going through crazy challenges, intense cookoffs, and many more moments of insanity.

Masterchef is another show that I personally relate to a little more than some of the others on here, because it usually features regular people. While shows like Hell’s Kitchen or Iron Chef often feature professionals in the business, Masterchef is stay at home mothers, firefighters, dog trainers - just regular people who have a true passion for cooking. The way they interact with food reminds me of Jon Favreau’s film, Chef, because they truly love the culinary world, and want to make it big, and this might be the best chance for them.

Chopped (Discovery+)

In this popular series, Chopped features four chefs, who are put up against each other as they compete for a chance to win $10,000.

Hosted by Ted Allen, Chopped is a great show because of its one big twist - every single competition, each food item has strange ingredients, ones that would never really go with anything. It’s up to the cooks to somehow make these weird food items work, and to advance into the next round. Some of these things are so interesting and creative, it makes me want to try them at home, but they have more talent in one of their fingers than I do in my whole entire body, so I’ll leave the cooking to them.

The Great British Baking Show (Netflix)

In this popular British baking competition, The Great British Baking Show follows a group of accomplished bakers who are competing against each other in a series of challenges, attempting to impress a group of judges with their baking creations, and trying not to get eliminated to reach the final round.

I feel like everyone has heard of The Great British Baking Show at least once. From the charismatic contestants to the hilarious judges to some of the funny moments that come out of this show, The Great British Baking Show will not only impress you with some of these people’s baking skills, but will make you smile and laugh.

Nailed It! (Netflix)

Last but not least, we take a look at Nailed It! This popular Netflix original show features several ametuer bakers who are tasked with recreating insanely hard and intricate baking designs in a timed bake-off, and whoever nailed the design the best wins a cash prize after two rounds.

This one is definitely the most relatable show for a reason. We all wish we had the baking skills but in reality, most of our creations would probably turn out like these contestants' do - and that’s totally okay, because it’s hilarious. Nicole Byer (who was actually just in the Vivo voice cast) hosts and slays every episode with funny bits and hilarious moments, and the rest of the show is entertaining and full of laugh-out-loud worthy baking creations. Truly, one of the best shows on Netflix.

God, talking about all these cooking competition shows has made me hungry. While I go and make a sandwich, you decide which show you want to watch. No matter what you pick, you will be entertained and rooting on the contestants just as I have - and probably be hungry afterward, as well.

Blake Lively is a master of fashion and of acting, and can apparently add cake decorating to her list of accomplishments. After creating a vivid and delectable-looking cake for her family, which includes actor husband Ryan Reynolds and a whole brood of girls, she shared the final results on social media, also mentioning her love for Netflix and ITV’s The Great British Bake Off (or The Great British Baking Show, depending on how you know it). Wildly, Paul Hollywood responded, but where does that leave she and Reynolds' dessert debate?

On this side of the pond, Blake Lively is a bigger celebrity than Paul Hollywood, though the Great British Bake Off has nabbed a loyal following in recent years. Celebrity or no, gaining the Paul Hollywood stamp of approval just isn’t all that easy. Nonetheless, the internet is forever, and there is plenty of evidence the exchange between the A Simple Favor and Great British Bake Off star happened.

Both Blake Lively and Paul Hollywood shared a look at Lively’s kitchen handiwork, with Paul responding to her request on his own Instagram account confirming she has, in fact, earned a handshake from him. Separately on her post, the famous Great British Bake Off judge also told Lively “nice work” and offered her the handshake emoji.

The moment was apparently so sincere it didn’t even inspire some of Ryan Reynolds’ famous snark. I’m actually very surprised, because the two had a popular exchange on his birthday earlier this year in which he admitted he prefers pie to cake and Lively absolutely roasted him.

Given that knowledge, I’m guessing the night of the unicorn cake he had his own ideas for dessert…

Of course, getting a Paul Hollywood handshake is a huge deal. Monumental. Not many bakers give them and they are only awarded by Hollywood if an early bake during an episode comes out to perfection.

I couldn’t remember the first time Paul Hollywood had extended one of his paws for the epic shake, but thank goodness for the Internet because there is an entire website dedicated to Paul Hollywood’s handshakes. Apparently, Ryan in Season 3 was the first to nab the honor and Hollywood has given the handshake out sparingly in the time since.

There was some question regarding whether or not handshakes would be given out during the recent season filmed during the Covid-19 pandemic, but the series ultimately filmed in a bubble, allowing for more freedom for the production. Some of the contestants were even able to bring their kids with them, which was delightful.

Blake Lively’s handshake came digitally from across the pond, which is perfect for pandemic times. Though, now she’s already gotten the handshake, she’s going to have to really shift outside of her comfort zone for whatever bake she attempts next.

Hosted by Jackie Tohn, this show brings together cooks who are exceptionally great at cooking up the worst part of everyone’s fridge clean-out – leftovers. From there, they are put in a race to see who can make the best meal and win $10,000.

While it does sound like a normal competition show, what makes this so interesting is that it really does show what one can do with leftovers, turning them into completely new meals like they were never cooked before. It’s always a hassle to reheat food and sometimes it doesn’t taste the same, so why not turn it into a fresh new meal? It’s truly a different kind of show.

The Chef Show

Based on the movie Chef, this documentary series was created by Hollywood big-shot Jon Favreau, and stars alongside him Roy Choi, a famous Korean American chef who basically founded the gourmet food truck movement. Throughout this series, Jon and Roy go from place to place, coast to coast, person to person to experiment and talk about food, all different kinds. Brisket, BBQ, cakes – everything you can imagine.

The love about The Chef Show is that while it does show some very familiar faces in Hollywood, it also shows viewers how to make exactly what they are making, and the recipes (while they can sometimes be a bit more difficult than others) are interesting enough where it could make anyone want to learn how to cook. Who wouldn’t want to east a brisket with Jon Favreau? And if you’re looking for some appearances of some of your favorite actors/actresses – Tom Holland, Robert Downey Jr., Seth Rogen – this is the show for you.

Chef’s Table

I love Chef’s Table. It’s one of the most interesting shows out there. Created by David Gelb, it is known as the first documentary series on Netflix, dating back to 2015. Each episode focuses on a different chef from around the world of a completely different food style and shows their philosophy and approach to cooking.

What makes Chef’s Table so interesting is that not only does it teach multiple new recipes from around the world that are relatively simple to learn, it’s the first series where you really come away feeling like you’ve learned something – and not just about food. The history and the culture behind some of the dishes are astounding, and truly it makes viewers want to learn more about each country that is featured, and what food means to them. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind show.

I couldn’t do this list without mentioning Chopped, the most iconic cooking reality TV show ever. Hosted by Ted Allen and in its 47th season, Chopped is the epitome of trying to figure out what cooks can make through unusual elements, through appetizers, entrees, and desserts, all for the chance to win $10,000.

Chopped is a classic example of what can be done with cooking. Everyone always complains that they never have anything in their fridge to use to make something but Chopped shows that no matter what, anything can be made from anything. Cooking may be difficult at first but it can be done super simply. That’s the beauty of it. Granted these are professional chefs, but the principle is still there.

Good Eats

Good Eats is so much fun and honestly, one of the most informative cooking shows out there. Alton Brown, one of the most famous chefs in the world, created this show and hosted it, for years and still does. From the creators of Bill Nye, The Science Guy, and Mr. Wizard, Good Eats is all about studying the science and technique of food, along with the cooking that comes with it. He also covers all paces of cooking in general, talking about the different kinds of equipment that can be used, and the advantages to do so with it.

Good Eats, having been around for 15 seasons due to a revival in the 2010s, has been popular among fresh cooks because not only does it teach the amateur cooks simple recipes, it really gets into the meat behind cooking, why things react the way they do, and everything else behind it. For people who want to get invested in food, this is the way to go.

The Great British Baking Show

While this show is about baking, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s still a part of the kitchen experience. The Great British Baking Show has been around for years now and continues to be a hit on Netflix as each series comes out. This is a baking competition show where they pick out amateur bakers and put their skills to the test with ingredients they are given, and from there a winner is crowned. But what makes this show so great is that it’s so personable.

I’ve always loved watching the amateurs bake and try to win these challenges because truly, we are all starting out as amateurs at some point. These people just show how easy it is to somehow make something out of nothing – and occasionally, it’s okay to completely fail too. That’s part of learning.

Magnolia Table

Joanna Gaines is a goddess among women for her home and cooking skills, and it was only a matter of time before the Magnolia Network to make its way to Discovery+. Joanna Gaines is known for her show “Fixer Upper” with her husband, but since that has ended she has been stepping out in the cooking scene with multiple cookbooks, and now that has translated to a new show that she leads, with her simple recipes.

She’s known to have fairly easy recipes to handle and Joanna is one of the most personable hosts you could ever meet – and occasionally, you might even get to see her adorable husband, Chip. But let’s be honest, we’re really here for the cooking, and she offers a great way to learn how to cook basic recipes that will not only impress your friends but yourself too.

Selena And Chef

Admittedly, when I first heard about this show I didn’t think it was going to be super good and assumed it would be just another celebrity cash-grab – but Selena and Chef is actually a lot of fun and really worth the watch on HBO Max. The premise of the show is Selena Gomez is live from her kitchen, getting advice from famous chefs from around the world, who teach her the recipes from a stream on her TV. The hijinks ensue as this beginner chef tries to keep up with them.

You wouldn’t expect it considering Selena is known for acting and singing as well as being a sweet girl, but that’s what really makes this show stand out. She laughs at her mistakes but keeps going, having her family as backup. And what makes it even better is that the chefs spell out and talk about the recipe the whole time, so it’s super easy to follow for a new cook. It’s really worth the watch.

The Pioneer Woman

Think of some of the most delicious foods you can think of – meals with sauce, potatoes, carbs – that’s exactly what the Pioneer Woman teaches, hosted by Ree Drummond. On her show, she breaks down simple recipes of some of the best country takes on food you will ever see. Think hearty soups, super-rich desserts, and creamy, cheesy pasta. My stomach is already rumbling thinking about it.

A big reason I lean towards The Pioneer Woman is that for beginner chefs, her recipes are definitely a bit easier to adapt to because they’re meals that anyone can make but with a special twist, some flavor, and a little bit of spice. Pioneer Woman is one of the best ways to start out cooking and then expand on your palette from there.

Guy’s Big Bite

Guy Fieri is one of the kings of cooking TV and it’s for a reason. Guy’s Big Bite is a show that easily shows how simple it can be to cook from your backyard, hosted by the man himself. And since it’s been around since 2006, it’s clear that the show has a very good following and has some staying power.

He shows off multiple different recipes, from different kinds of french-fries to French toast to Stromboli – he’s really a jack of all trades and makes some of the best foods, all while explaining how to do it to the viewer. Talk about super simple. Just be careful not to eat too much of his delicious food, or else you'll be paying for it.

Johnny Depp’s U.S. lawsuit may be ongoing, but he recently lost a libel case he’d filed against The Sun’s parent company. Since then, the brouhaha surrounding Depp and his former relationship with Aquaman star Amber Heard has not died down, as staunch fans have launched petitions and Depp himself has stepped down from his role in Fantastic Beasts 3. He recently even caused some viewers to be offended during an episode of The Great British Bake Off.

The Great British Bake Off, also known as The Great British Baking Show, airs on Netflix in the United States. However, in the U.K. it airs on Channel 4, which means there are advertising breaks. During the recent finale of the popular series, Dior took over some serious ad space and aired an advertisement featuring Johnny Depp strumming on a guitar, an activity Depp is known for doing.

Following the results of the court case, not everyone is on the “Justice for Johnny” train. In fact, a spokesperson for the Advertising Standards Authority revealed that it received a small handful of complaints over the ad airing during the Great British Bake Off episode in question.

Eleven complaints isn’t a gigantic number or anything, but it’s not like people are going out of their way to complain about advertisements during The Great British Baking Show on the regular. A report from The Guardian notes that Dior is sticking with the actor as its spokesperson in 2020 despite the high publicity of his various court cases, with that outlet noting “the attitude” toward Johnny Depp varies from place to place right now.

This isn’t the first time a Dior and Johnny Depp ad caused controversy. Another ad the two launched together drew criticism for presenting stereotypical Native American tropes.

Though Dior may still be highlighting the longtime a-lister in an ad campaign, Johnny Depp did lose a role following the loss of his libel lawsuit in the U.K. He notably announced himself that he was asked to step down from Fantastic Beasts 3 despite creator J.K. Rowling having defended the actor previously. Since then, Hannibal actor Mads Mikkelsen has seemingly been brought in to take on the role of Grindelwald in the franchise. Given Colin Farrell has also played the character in the series, this may not play out as oddly as you’d guess on the big screen.

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp also recently lost the chance to appeal his U.K. court case. His second case in Virginia is still ongoing after it was delayed earlier in 2020 due to the pandemic.

December is the final month in 2020, and I think I can speak for pretty much everyone when I say 2021 can't come soon enough. Of course, while some television has suffered throughout the year and networks struggle to keep consistent programming schedules, Netflix has done a solid job of keeping audiences entertained with its steady stream of content all year round.

Given that, it should be no surprise that December is loaded with quite a few solid shows and big hits. Of course, there's also some holiday content as well for those looking to get festive for the season, so let's dive in and read up on some of the coolest things coming to Netflix in December 2020.

Alien Worlds- 12/2

Netflix is bringing the wondrous documentary style of Planet Earth and similar shows to a setting as whimsical and mythical as the worlds of Star Wars and Star Trek. This docuseries will hop to mythical settings and explore the wildlife that lives there in a way that, as you can see in the picture above, looks stunningly realistic. Obviously, it remains to be seen if the full series looks just as amazing, but this is certainly one worth throwing on to watch on a lazy day.

Big Mouth (Season 4) - 12/3

One of Netflix's most irreverent and hilarious shows is back for Season 4, and Big Mouth looks to be bringing more awkward middle-schooler energy than ever to summer camp. One new major character this season is Tito the Anxiety Mosquito, who may just be that character that unlocks all your deepest insecurities in life. Expect to meet him, and all the other characters fans know and love as the teens embark on an adventure at sleepaway camp.

The Great British Baking Show: Holidays (Season 3) - 12/4

Treats, meats, and other sweets are a holiday tradition, or at least, that's what I tell myself on my third cookie of the day. Regardless, people love cooking shows, and few are better than The Great British Baking Show. Netflix will bring the series back for the holiday season with some past favorites of the franchise back to compete. Plus, anyone who is a fan of Derry Girls will get to see that cast as well, so fans should mark their calendars for that one.

Selena: The Series - 12/4

Known as the "Queen of Tejano Music," Selena was one of the world's biggest Latinx stars in her lifetime. Now, another adaptation is coming of her life story, which is meant to highlight the highs and lows of her coming of age as a singer. This is a story more meant to focus on the early years of her life and rise to prominence, so expect most of the story to come from that.

Mr. Iglesias (Part 3) - 12/8

Gabriel Iglesias' Netflix series is back with new episodes, and apparently, these new episodes are all about facing your fears and following dreams. Gabe is in a new relationship, and as he wrestles with navigating that he's still encouraging and hoping his students continue to pursue their dreams. Mr. Iglesias is a solid family series, so definitely worth catching up on for those that haven't given it a shot yet.

The Big Show Show: Christmas - 12/9

Netflix may have canceled The Big Show Show back in September, but it looks like the WWE wrestler and his family will return for a Christmas special. Big Show is sidelined from doing his "Santa duties" when he has an injury, so it's up to Cassy to fill his big shoes and save Christmas. It may be bittersweet for fans hoping for a whole new season, but who knows? Perhaps this return will spark some kind of Christmas miracle that leads to it returning.

Tiny Pretty Things - 12/14

Netflix has a ballet drama coming in mid-December, and yes, it will feature fierce competition and deception. Of course, it took an attack on the elite school's star pupil to bring out these nasty traits. I'm not sure why so many ballet stories in pop culture seem to devolve into deception and even violence at some point, but I can say I'm a sucker for it. For that reason, I'm already all-in on this drama and hoping it lives up to the hype.

Song Exploder: Volume 2 - 12/15

The music documentary series is back and has four new artists to profile and walk through how they wrote some of their most iconic hits. This time the artists profiled include Dua Lipa, The Killers, Trent Reznor, and Natalia Lafourcade and the creation behind songs like "Hurt" and "When You Were Young." Definitely a series worth checking out for any musician, or just people who love music in general.

Bridgerton - 12/25

From Shondaland, a woman from a notable family hopes to find true love in Regency London’s competitive marriage market. This tale is adapted from the works of Julia Quinn. Expect some quick-witted dialogue, some drama, and of course, there has to be some romance happening somewhere along the way in this one. Obviously, Shondaland has a notable body of work on television, so there will be a lot of eyes on this one as it makes its Netflix debut.

Best Leftovers Ever! - 12/30

Lots of food is made during the holidays, which means lots of leftovers to snack on. As great as that may be, sometimes the third day eating ham just isn't as enticing as the first. For those who continually find a way to jazz up those leftovers and keep them feeling fresh, then Best Leftovers Ever! may be a great show to compete on. Contestants are tasked with making inventive meals out of leftovers, all for a chance at winning $10,000. It's not the fanciest cooking show out there, but cooking isn't always about being fancy either.

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina (Part 4) - 12/31

The final episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will round out the end of 2020, and boy, have things gone south for Sabrina and friends. The final season will see the witches wage war against key figures associated with Eldritch horror, including figures like The Weird, The Returned, or The Darkness. There's also a tease that Nick will make efforts to find his way back to Sabrina's heart, but will he succeed before the series ends? Fans can hope!

There is everything you need to know about when, where, and how to watch The Great British Baking Show 2020 finale when it airs later this week.

It think it's probably fair to say that it doesn't take much to get people's attention in 2020. While this has certainly led to some pop culture surprises, none may be so shocking as the way fans of The Great British Bake Off have reacted to a lovely little squirrel with, well, giant nuts, appearing in ads for the series. The popular baking competition recently returned for Season 11 to Channel 4 in England, but instead of all the buzz being about cakes and tarts, people are up in arms about that squirrel, even though he's been a part of the show forever.

The Great British Bake Off (better known as The Great British Baking Show in the U.S.) has been a television staple for many years now, with people all over the U.K. and in the states loving it for showing a competition that manages to serve up tasty-looking treats and contestants who actually value supporting one another in every episode. So, while fans the world over have been eagerly awaiting the new season, now that it's here, all that some of them have noticed is the prominent display of squirrel genitalia.

And, I can assure you, I never thought I'd have to type the phrase "squirrel genitalia" for this job, but I'm in it now, so let's just continue on with dignity. Here's what's causing the uproar:

Well, alrighty, then! According to The Sun, fans of the wholesomeness that is typically The Great British Baking Show are none too pleased with this image, which has been used to promote the new season. These posters advertising Season 11 went up in several cities across England, and the brightly pastel-colored illustration features cakes, baking tools and a couple of competitors happily shaking hands. But, resting above all of the things one would expect to see in such an advertisement is an image of a standing squirrel, who is proudly showing off not only his nuts, but also his bulging bolt.

Seeing as how The Great British Bake Off is seen as family entertainment, many people are complaining that the image, even though it is only an illustration, is completely inappropriate and, especially, shouldn't be connected with this show. But, here's the thing: this chipper squirrel and his joyful junk have been a part of the show (off and on) since way back in Season 2. Back then, it was actually a real squirrel instead of an illustration, which showed up in the finale at the park setting of the competition, and was then featured in the opening credits of the series for four whole seasons.

Even though one fan who saw the new ads dubbed the squirrel's presence "pornographic," a spokesperson for the network doesn't see a problem, and noted:

OK. So, the big question here isn't why The Great British Bake Off is using squirrel bits to promote the show, but why some fans seem to be angered by it? It's clear that this is a bit of a tradition for the series, albeit an admittedly odd one for a baking show. I suppose it's possible that some people have forgotten about our well-endowed tree-dwelling friend, seeing as how he hasn't been a part of the show since 2015.

Also, it's not impossible that newer fans who began watching after that time simply never saw him, and didn't know that this gentle baking contest had a "dark" side which involved squirrel peen. I can see anyone being at least a bit shocked by the inclusion of such a sight when they have no logical reason to expect it. I wouldn't go so far as to label it pornographic, though. After all, if you can't laugh at some squirrel twig-n-berry action, can you laugh at anything?

While we are still a ways a way from the novel coronavirus being successfully tampered in parts of the world, in many places TV and movie productions have started returning to normal. Chief among these is The Great British Bake Off, the long-running Channel 4 series which will air a new season coming up. (In the U.S., episodes air on PBS and Netflix under The Great British Baking Show.)

In fact, the show announced this week that filming has already wrapped on the new Great British Bake Off, thus marking the 11th series the show will have aired in total and the upcoming fourth season on Channel 4. Take a look at the filming announcement below.

The kitchen looks markedly normal in the first look at Season 11; however, there were a lot of comments from fans under the post remarking about social distancing and having “something normal” to look forward to. One amusing person was more concerned about the hot temps the U.K. has seen lately, which has been an issue in previous seasons of The Great British Bake Off before – particularly when chocolate challenges are involved. Twitter user Wine Me Up Wench noted:

Judge Paul Hollywood also responded after the show “finally managed to finish” the new series of The Great British Bake Off in a video message to his fans. He noted some details about filming and it all sounds like a bit more of an undertaking than usual.

The return hasn’t been without a few minor snafus, however. Prue Leith recently revealed that she had to bow out of the Juniors version of Bake Off after schedule conflicts came up. Junior Bake Off was supposed to film right after The Great British Bake Off earlier in 2020, but as the latter got pushed back, so did the former and Pru had something else lined up for this fall. The coronavirus strikes again! Ravneet Gill has joined that series instead.

All in all, though, it’s good news coming up. Fans in the U.K. and across the pond will be getting new episodes of The Great British Bake Off and hopefully soon. There are myriad other TV productions heading back to work right now in the U.K., Canada and even the U.S. in some instances, so Bake won't be the only show making a triumphant return. Each round, they’re allotted a certain amount of time, but if they finish early, that time transfers over to the next round. A team is eliminated every round until there is only one winning team.

Contestants use their talent and skills to create beautiful and delicious dishes, and the more tasty, more creative, and more skilled, the better your chances of winning. The Big Family Cooking Showdown (2017)

The series showcases different styles of cuisine (Vietnamese, Italian, French, etc.) for a series of episodes, then shifts to another culture’s cuisine.

It’s more of a tutorial series than the regular Great British Baking Show.

Nailed It: Mexico (2019)

Omar Chaparro and Anna Ruiz host Nailed It! Mexico. This reality baking series has amateur bakers try to recreate intricate treats and desserts. These three home cooks compete in two challenges to win 200,000 pesos and a Nailed It trophy.

Why It’s A Good Option If You Now Love To Bake: The original Nailed it spun a few spin-off series, including a holiday one, and then Mexico, France, and Spain versions. Nailed It! Mexico was the first international spin-off series and has the same DNA as the original, while sticking to its Mexican roots. It’s a good show to watch if you’ve run out of episodes from the original Nailed It! If the series being in Spanish seems intimidating, Netflix gives you the option to add English subtitles or voice-overs.

Sugar Rush: Christmas (2019)

Hunter March, Candace Nelson, and Adriano Zumbo return to host and judge this Christmas edition of Sugar Rush. Sugar Rush: Christmas has the same timed competition with three rounds of themed challenges and four teams of two.

Why It’s A Good Option if You Now Love To Bake: Baking and holidays, especially Christmas, are a marriage made in heaven. It’s almost like one should not exist without the other. Sugar Rush: Christmas will give you a jolt of jolly in July, while helping you think of some dishes to cook once the holidays roll around again. Also who says you can’t make gingerbread cookies in spring or summer? Rules don’t apply anymore.

Kim’s Convenience

Kim’s Convenience focuses on the Kim family, a Korean Canadian family that owns a convenience store. The main four characters are Mr. Sang-il Kim (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee), Mrs. Kim (Jean Yoon), Janet Kim (Andrea Bang), and Jung Kim (Simu Liu).

Kim’s Convenience is a family based comedy about a traditional Korean family. The strict parents stick close to their old school ways, which often causes conflict between them and their modern adult children. This entertaining series approaches drama with a growth mindset. The Kim parents may not always be right but they believe that their actions are best for their children, while also being open to improving and learning from their mistakes. The Andy Griffith Show

Andy Griffith plays Sheriff Andy Taylor, a widower running the town of Mayberry, North Carolina. His cousin and Deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts), son Opie (Ron Howard), and aunt, Bee Taylor (Frances Bavier) join him on his adventures.

Queer Eye follows a group of gay men who have expertise in different fields: fashion, makeup and beauty, self-care, cooking, and interior design. Each episode, the Queer Eye guys help different individuals improve their lives. They give them a full makeover that includes the elevation of their spirit, body, and home.

I dare you to watch an entire season of Queer Eye without getting teary-eyed at least once. If you can do that, then congratulations, you have no soul. Jokes aside, the stories on Queer Eye connect with viewers because the show tackles issues that everyone faces at some point: lack of confidence, financial distress, losing a loved one, and many more. One Day At A Time

One Day at a Time follows the Alvarez family as they deal with modern issues like immigration, sexuality, gender identity, PTSD, and a lot of very critical and relevant topics. This family comedy stars screen legend Rita Moreno and Justina Machado. The One Day at a Time cast also includes Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, and Marcel Ruiz.

One Day at a Time is a family comedy that deals with very serious issues but keeps its comedic tone. The Alvarez family has dealt with many hardships, but as long as they have each other, they know they can face anything. Unfortunately, Netflix decided to cancel the series after three seasons, but Pop TV picked it up for a fourth season. The first three seasons are still available to stream on Netflix. The Good Place

Eleanor (Kristen Bell) dies and goes to the good place. She knows that she doesn’t belong there; they picked the wrong Eleanor. Now, along with her good place soulmate Chidi (William Jackson Harper), she must try to fit in and hide the fact that she doesn't really belong there.

The Good Place recently ended on NBC while still being a refreshing, unusual, and captivating TV show. It’s a rare series that stays true to itself all the way through, and keeps you rooting for the main characters until the very end. The six main characters of The Good Place face many world-shattering obstacles, but the series keeps a “we’ll get through this somehow, someway” enthusiasm, and that sort of optimism is contagious. New Girl

Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) moves in with three male roommates Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.). Coach eventually moves out and Winston (Lamorne Morris) moves into the pad after Jess. Hannah Simone also stars in New Girl as Jess’s model best friend Cece.

New Girl can be quite silly at times, but that’s part of the charm. Each character on the series has their own quirk and they all get funnier and stranger as the series continues, but that makes them more lovable. The New Girl in many ways is a very wholesome series about friends who are weird, but that makes them all work together. Stream it HERE.

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek follows the Rose family, a formerly wealthy family who loses their fortune, and then must move to a town called Schitt’s Creek, their one remaining asset. The residents of the town are very different from the Rose clan. Dan Levy and Eugene Levy are creators and stars of the series. The main Schitt’s Creek cast also includes Catherine O’Hara, Annie Murphy, Emily Hampshire, Jenn Robertson, Chris Elliot, Dustin Milligan, Noah Reid, and Sarah Levy.

Schitt’s Creek’s biggest strength is its likable cast, both main and supporting. In a lesser series, the Rose family could be treated with contempt for being part of the rich elite, but instead they’re all sympathetic characters who may be snobby at times, but good natured at their core. Nailed It!

Nailed It is a reality competition show about regular people trying to recreate professional level cakes. Their failed attempts make for comedy gold. Nicole Byer hosts, and acts as a judge along with pastry chef Jacques Torres.

Nailed It is a simple concept: regular people (and sometimes celebrities) try to overcome the obstacle of learning professional grade cakes in a few hours. They fail and we enjoy their failed creations. The whole premise sounds not that that interesting, possibly even cruel, but it is far from it. Nicole Byer and crew encourage people to embrace the messiness of their cakes. If anything, Nailed It inspires people to go out of their comfort zone, even if it turns into a tasteless sloppy mess. It’s less about the final result and more about the really funny journey. Stream it HERE.

The Great British Baking Show

The Great British Baking Show follows contestants as they compete in weekly competitions involving baking. Each week, a contestant is eliminated until someone is crowned the greatest British baker of that season. Netflix currently has seven collections of The Great British Baking Show available and various spin-off versions.

The Great British Baking Show is enticing because you become invested in these contestants. Their success is your success; their failure is your failure. You want them to be able to ace that three layer cake or those biscuits. Unlike many American television series, The Great British Baking Show doesn’t focus on manufactured drama. Instead, the drama comes from whether the dough rises or if the piping bag busts. Sometimes it just feels good to watch people bake and yell “yes!” when they succeed. Stream it HERE.

Parks And Recreation

Amy Poehler leads an ensemble cast in Parks and Recreation. The NBC hit-series followed the Parks and Rec department of Pawnee, Indiana. Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) is an optimistic person with a deep devotion to Pawnee and an endless desire to improve it.

Accompanied by her cast of colorful crew Leslie Knope fights for a town that often under-appreciates her. Parks and Recreation uses the mockumentary style to tell its story, but unlike many mockumentary series, the series doesn’t poke fun of the lead. Knope’s passion is respectable and contagious. Yes Leslie Knope can be too passionate, but that’s part of her charisma. It’s enjoyable to see a show with a competent boss who is also energetic. Stream it HERE.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Rachel Bloom stars in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a series about a woman who moves to West Covina, California after running into an ex-boyfriend.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is full of catchy songs, many of which are spoofs of popular tunes. The series is very fun, but also satirical in its commentary on the romantic comedy genre. However, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend criticizes that genre but also clearly loves and respects it. The series also doesn’t shy away from addressing serious topics like mental health, but Crazy Ex-Girlfriend does so without losing its jovial spirit. Stream It HERE.

Fans of Netflix's The Great British Baking Show were just getting used to Sandi Toksvig as one of the co-hosts and we're already saying goodbye. The show known as The Great British Bake Off overseas has already seen some major cast turnover, with Paul Hollywood as the sole remaining original star, and now it's welcoming a Doctor Who alum as the new co-host to joke alongside Noel Fielding.

The Great British Bake Off announced comedian Matt Lucas will be joining the show as Sandi's replacement. Fans may know him from his sketch comedy with David Walliams, including Rock Profile, Little Britain, and Come Fly With Me. However, Doctor Who fans will remember him as Nardole across more than a dozen episodes from 2015-2017.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Matt Lucas brings to The Great British Baking Show on Netflix. The show used to air in the U.S. on PBS and now it's on Netflix. I don't know why they have to complicate this so much, but what was called The Great British Bake Off Series 10 aired in 2019 in the U.K. and streamed as The Great British Baking Show Collection 7 on Netflix.

So we're on standby for Series 11/Collection 8. When the latest season premiered on Netflix at the start of September 2019, we were surprised to not be able to binge every episode. What's more binge-able than a baking show?! Instead, episodes were posted weekly, arriving on Netflix just a few days after they first premiered in the U.K. That may stay the case this year.

When can we expect The Great British Baking Show Collection 8 on Netflix? Well, The Great British Bake Off tends to premiere in late August in the U.K. and if we get it a few days later, then we could be on track for a start-of-September 2020 premiere on Netflix. Stay tuned.

Are you excited for Matt Lucas to join the team this year?

The Great British Bake Off, also known as The Great British Baking Show in its Netflix (and former PBS run) for unclear reasons, is losing another big name. Shortly after the move from the BBC to Channel 4 (which did not go out with a bang), fans of the series were introduced to some new players in Sandi Toksvig, Noel Fielding and Prue Leith, and now, just a hop, skip and a jump later Toksvig is calling it quits.

Unlike when The Great British Baking Show shifted from BBC to Channel 4, it doesn’t sound as if there will be too much drama around the exit. Sandi Toksvig called working on the series for three seasons “one of the great pleasures of my life” and also noted in a statement with the network that the “true stars” are the contestants themselves, before revealing why she’s saying sayonara.

She has already started making plans for what’s next, which includes an upcoming Channel 4 series that will allegedly be about adult literacy. So, she’ll at least be sticking with the Channel 4 family. The network is currently looking for a replacement host.

Look, actors leave TV shows all the time, but The Great British Baking Show has a much more storied and wild history with having to make changes. Most of this happened when Channel 4 outbid ITV for the series. Feelings were hurt and shakeups happened.

To be honest with you, I have really enjoyed the new lineup. I do miss Mary Berry, but Prue Leith’s love of boozy desserts and clever comments have done more than enough to soften that blow. And I think of actually preferred Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig’s more out there bits than what we got in the previous iteration with Mel and Sue.

Assumedly, Noel Fielding will be sticking around, just with a new presenter and we won’t see any more shakeups for the upcoming season. Hey, at least we should always have stalwart Paul Hollywood.

The show will be heading into Season 11 next, although it should be noted that the numbers in the States are all weird and that Series 10 in the U.K. is listed as Collection 7 on Netflix. This is because Netflix doesn’t have the first couple of seasons in the U.S. and also weirdly has one season marked as The Beginnings. We'll be sure to keep you updated as The Great British Bake Off chooses another new presenter in the coming weeks.

Atypical (Season 3) - 11/1

Atypical is headed into Season 3, and Sam is officially done with high school and off to college. That, combined with the various other plots from Season 2 and some high-profile guest stars, will surely make for a good deal of drama for this consistently solid Netflix original. Hopefully Netflix continues to give this show an ongoing run, as the trailer doesn't look like this year will be the season that closes things out.

Queer Eye: We're In Japan! - 11/1

For those who have been eager for more Queer Eye, have no fear! Season 5 is still on the way, but before that Netflix and the guys made a pit stop in Japan (not Hawkins, sadly) to change four lives while also learning about Japanese culture and traditions. It sounds like a good time, though I am curious to see how the guys will respond to the cultural differences of Japan and how that will reflect on the show.

The End Of The F*ing World (Season 2) - 11/5

It's the follow-up season to what was a jarring end to Season 1. For those unaware, The End Of The F*ing World will be up a day earlier in the UK, so anyone looking to avoid being spoiled best keep their eyes off the internet for the 24 hours in advance of its Netflix release. As for what we know, Season 2 takes place two years after James and Alyssa's crazy road trip, as they're pursued by a woman out for revenge.

The Great British Baking Show: Holidays (Season 2) - 11/8

'Tis the season, and whether you say "Merry" or "Happy" Christmas, the vibe is all the same. Cooking enthusiasts will be psyched to learn The Great British Baking Show: Holidays is back for Season 2, and that Paul Hollywood (who recently fell into a bit of trouble) and Prue Leith will be around to judge a bunch of holiday-inspired dishes made by some favorite past competitors on the program.

Greatest Events Of WWII In HD Colour - 11/8

It's not often Netflix uploads a ton of original war genre material, so the arrival of HD color footage of one of the biggest wars in human history should be quite a treat. Events teased include the attack on Pearl Harbor, and D-Day, so there's going to be lots of stuff for war buffs to take in. It will be interesting to see how this series works in comparison to other specials that have tackled a similar concept.

Green Eggs & Ham - 11/8

One of the most iconic works of Dr. Seuss is coming to life, and yes, it's going to be a series. For the record, this is not a direct lift of Green Eggs & Ham, but will feature Sam and Guy (the person who doesn't like the title dish) as they go on an adventure to save an endangered animal. My guess is there will be a few Seuss character cameos in this one, so get ready!

The Toys That Made Us (Season 3) - 11/15

The holiday season is right around the corner, so there's no better time for a new season of The Toys That Made Us to arrive. This season is set to tackle some heavy hitters in the toy industry, such as the Power Rangers, My Little Pony, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and wrestling action figures. Be warned, this show can make a person search eBay to relive parts of their childhood.

Dolly Parton's Heartstrings - 11/22

2019 has been a weird year, and if the fact that Dolly Parton got an anthology series doesn't prove that I'm not sure what will. Dolly Parton's Heartstrings will explore the stories behind the artist's most-beloved songs, and feature music both new and old from Parton. The tone is going to vary from episode to episode, but given the great career Parton has had, there's no reason to suspect any of it will be boring.

Nailed It! Holiday! (Season 2) - 11/22

Not to be outdone by the U.K. baking competitions, Netflix will be rolling out another holiday season of its best baking show for people who often fail at baking. Nailed It! Holiday! will be the same series fans know and love, though it appears there will be some celebrities involved from time to time this upcoming season as well. Here's hoping none of the contestants embarrass themselves with their creations too badly this time around.

Merry Happy Whatever - 11/28

Dennis Quaid is back on television this holiday season, and will be the star in the upcoming Netflix original, Merry Happy Whatever. The series is staged around a father, who has to cope with his daughter's new boyfriend she has brought home with her for the holidays. It's interesting to see a whole series centered around Christmas. Perhaps Netflix will spark a trend that other streamers could follow in the future? I can't say I'd be too upset about binging an entire Christmas show as opposed to watching the same movie over and over again.

And here I thought Netflix's The Great British Baking Show was one of those non-controversial reality TV shows. Fans across the pond are having heated debates about a joke judge Paul Hollywood made during the most recent episode of The Great British Bake Off, which we call The Great British Baking Show over here.

The Great British Bake Off Series 10 Semifinals first aired earlier this week in the U.K., including a comment from judge Paul Hollywood comparing the technical challenge's patisserie to "diabetes on a plate."

The joke sparked anger from many Channel 4 viewers, arguing it perpetuated the myth that diabetes comes from eating too much sugar.

According to Deadline, The Great British Baking Show producers cut the reference from repeats of the episode in the U.K. The joke was expected to be removed from the Semifinals episode on Netflix, but it was still there when it debuted on Friday, October 25.

Paul Hollywood also shared a screenshot of some Chelsea Buns and apologized for the diabetes joke, which he called "thoughtless":

Great British Bake Off fans debated the comment -- with some calling it out as ignorant, and others rolling their eyes at what they saw as oversensitivity.

Some viewers with diabetes said they didn't mind Paul Hollywood's joke, and others argued it would've been OK if the judge had just said Type 2 diabetes to differentiate it from Type 1:

Of course, most baking shows are going to focus on sweets and heavy pastries -- it's not exactly health food or advertised as much. That said, some episodes do focus on sugar-free baking and some bakers have noted when they use vegan or more healthy ingredients. Still, it's a baking show! I watch for the food porn of it all.

True story. Yesterday, I was minding my own business, enjoying a lovely Sunday, when my wife and I threw on Netflix and saw a new season of The Great British Baking Show. I said, “I guess the rest of our day is planned.” But no. Turns out it was not because after we finished the first episode, there was no second episode. We had to find other things to fill our time (we picked Target) because the new season is not bingeable.

Well, I immediately hit up the Internet to figure out WTF was going on, and it turns out there’s a perfectly good explanation behind it. Unlike the other Great British Baking Show seasons that arrive following their initial airing in the United Kingdom, viewers on Netflix are basically watching the show alongside our British counterparts.

The first episode of Season 10 of The Great British Bake Off, or Baking Show as the US calls it, debuted on Tuesday August 27th on Channel 4 (not BBC) in the UK. Then, three days later, the episode debuted on Netflix on Friday. The rest of the season is scheduled to follow that same pattern. There will be 10 episodes in total, and one of the weeks prior to the finale will have a surprise double elimination, though the hosts are not giving any hints as to when that might happen.

Obviously, there are a lot of pros and cons that come with shifting a series from a binge model to a traditional weekly television model. The upshot of the former is it allows you to just completely immerse yourself in a show for a small period of time. It gives the viewer instant gratification and allows for a completely immerse experience. There’s nothing quite like just blowing through an entire season of a show on a Saturday.

On the other hand, there’s also nothing quite like stewing on a show for a week. Too often when people binge, they don’t stop to talk about what’s happening in between episodes. The best part about the television format is being able to stop and speculate on where things might be heading. That might be more important with a show like Mindhunter, which was also recently released, but there’s an element of fun there with reality television shows too. I want to talk about who I think is going to win, and I want that opinion to slowly evolve as I get more information throughout the season.

Regardless of where you stand on that issue, however, I think we can all agree Netflix giving us faster access to the episodes is great from a spoiler perspective. If you’re not the type of person to want to drag it out over 10 weeks, then you’re more than welcome to simply wait until they’ve all aired and then binge them all at once at that time. Because once they’re on the service, they’ll be on the service to stay.

I admit it: I watch some pretty toxic reality TV shows -- from Big Brother and Survivor to every spinoff of The Bachelor. But not all reality TV is bad. Not every competition show is negative. In fact, Netflix is packed with positivity with so many heart-growing and soul-cleansing series in the genre. Here are just five options worth streaming right now to Ctrl-Alt-Delete your attitude about reality TV.

The Great British Baking Show 

I can't even tell you how excited I was when I logged onto Netflix and saw there were new Great British Baking Show episodes coming this very Friday, August 30! This show is called The Great British Bake Off in the U.K. and what they call Series 10 is just starting to air August 27. We're getting those episodes as "Collection 7" this Friday. I absolutely miss Mary Berry, plus Mel and Sue, from the original Baking Show. But the bakers are the heart of the show, and I love how they work together and support each other. As cheesy as it sounds, the camaraderie is the most delicious part of this beautiful show. And I want desperately to visit that tent someday.

Blown Away 

Glassblowers! I'd never imagine a competition series following 10 glassblowers in Canada would be gripping. Critics and fans were -- wait for it -- blown away by how impressive the first season of the reality show turned out to be. It's a visually stunning showcase for these artists. As Esquire put it, "The series waffles between the innocence of Great British Bake Off and the dramatic gravitas of American Ninja Warrior." I'd add Project Runway vibes to the list as well. And, as a Big Brother fan, I was pleasantly surprised to see BB15 alum Nick Uhas on board as host. No scheming required this time!

Nailed It! 

As much as I aspire to be one of the Great British Baking Show bakers, I am much more like the folks on Nailed It! What I appreciate about this bake-off competition show, following contestants who fail miserably at making elaborate baked goods, is how positive the judges can be if the bakers make slow improvements across each episode. The encouragement is inspiring. It could've easily gone the way of early American Idol episodes, with a Simon Cowell type just reducing bakers to tears. Instead, host Nicole Byer and company are usually gentle and keep things light and fun. But some of the disasters are really hilarious, and do make me feel a wee bit better about the messes I create in my own kitchen.

The World's Most Extraordinary Homes 

Netflix has a wealth of fantastic home and garden shows, so you can really take your pick. I've come to love following serious architect Piers Taylor and playful actress/property enthusiast Caroline Quentin as they travel the world to visit extraordinary homes. Sure, she can get a little randy. And sure, they do tend to visit a few too many contemporary homes for my taste. But my HGTV-loving self is fully served by this globe-trotting show. I love the houses, the landscapes, the building process, the architectural angles, the humor, everything. It's a perfect binge, too, with each episode having a country or location theme like "Mountain" or "Forest." I want to move into a few places they visited in New Zealand. Not that I'd turn down a chance to live in any of these homes.

Queer Eye 

This heartwarming series is about so much more than a typical "makeover." The lovable Fab Five elevated the original Bravo show -- called Queer Eye for the Straight Guy -- to be more substantial. They are basically life coaches for both men and women, helping people from every background and all walks of life. It's one of the most life-affirming shows you could ever see. I'm not surprised the reboot has been a huge hit for Netflix, with the streamer dropping eight episodes in February 2018, eight more in June 2018, eight more in March 2019, and another eight in July 2019. We're getting a fifth season too, so keep some tissues handy for those happy tears.

Those who do who have a love of Momoa and his ass-kicking characters won't be disappointed as Declan Harp is almost as much of a badass as Khal Drogo. Many details have been kept under wraps since the original announcement in 2017, but we do know Sarah Paulson will play the nurse and Ryan Murphy was believed to have directed the pilot. Fuller House (Season 4)

Why We're Pumped: There are whispers floating around that Season 4 will be the final season of Fuller House. Movies are shaping up to be quite the draw at Netflix, as a lot of old favorites are coming back, with some new originals spicing things up. Halloween might be over by time it hits, but if you're looking for something spooky during the holiday months, make sure you look out for Bram Stoker's Dracula and Cape Fear! Also, Marvel fans can rejoice, as Doctor Strange is headed to the streaming service as well.

However, don't underestimate Netflix's original film content, as some big contenders are on the horizon. Both The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and The Other Side of the Wind see the return of The Coen Brothers and Orson Welles to the film scene. Also, if you've been curious about what Kurt Russell would look like as Santa Claus, The Christmas Chronicles will help make that dream come true.

Last, but not least, if you want to know how Scotland landed its first king and/or what Chris's "pine" looks like, Outlaw King will answer both of those questions. However, if your tastes run closer to the realm of TV, Netflix definitely has some exciting content coming through its original programming.

The Great British Baking Show returns with a sixth collection of episodes, and if Narcos: Mexico is a title you've been looking forward to, you'll be able to see it sooner than you think. Conspiracies abound in the new original series, 1983; but if you're looking for a good laugh to balance out the darkness of said show, Mystery Science Theater 3000 and F is for Family could both provide a good antidote.

Netflix rolls out a slew of original programming on a consistent basis, and while it has plenty of scripted shows, it's gained quite a few unscripted originals as well. Now the streaming service has acquired the American rights to one of the most-known cooking competitions out of the U.K., and will also be rolling out quite a few unscripted originals in the near future. Netflix will be the new American home for The Great British Baking Show and will premiere original programs The Final Table, Death by Magic, Sunderland 'Til I Die, Flinch, and Derren Brown: Sacrifice before the end of 2018.

Food-loving Netflix subscribers may already be familiar with The Great British Baking Show (or The Great British Bake Off), as the platform has had collections 1-4 (U.K. seasons 4-7) on its service for a while now. That will continue as all episodes of collection 5 (Season 8) will come to the platform Friday, August 31. Fans wary of spoilers may want to avoid too much googling in regards to the show, as Channel 4 wrapped up the airing of the aforementioned season in 2017. Netflix also has the rights to the yet to air Seasons 9 and 10 of the program, as well as a batch of two-episode holiday specials that will air each holiday season from 2018 through 2020.

As for the unscripted original shows, Netflix is keeping the cooking theme going with The Final Table. The Final Table is a competitive program that pits the best chefs from around the world against each other in a contest that involves the preparation of national dishes from different countries. Chefs will compete in 12 teams of 2, and will compete for supremacy in episodes that specifically focus on the cuisine of one country. Each episode will end with an elimination until the finale in which only one chef will reign supreme and win a place at the culinary table among other celebrity cooking icons from other countries. The show hails from Masterchef producers and is expected to arrive on Netflix before the end of the year.

Netflix isn't only cooking up food shows, however, and will step into a world of magic and morbidity with Death By Magic. Hosted by British magician Drummond Money-Coutts, the program will travel the world to investigate the deaths of those who died performing dangerous stunts and illusions. Money-Coutts will up the ante and recreate some of these dangerous stunts, some of which include dangerous activities like a game of Russian roulette and dodging a speeding train. We're assuming he survives the encounters, as the series is set to arrive on Netflix at some point later this year.

Soccer fans who find a passion for the pastime largely lacking in America will get a healthy dose of European fanaticism for "football" in Sunderland 'Til I Die. The series revolves around the community of Sunderland which has found optimism in hard times in the SAFC (Sunderland Association Football Club). Viewers will witness the club's high and low points in its first season in the Championship after relegation the previous year. It sounds like a great sports series with the emotional weight of other Netflix originals like Last Chance U and may be worth checking out even for fans who aren't as crazy about the sport. Sunderland 'Til I Die arrives Friday, December 14 at 12:01 PT on Netflix.

Things sound progressively less heavy and more happy-go-lucky in Flinch, which explains about everything interested viewers need to know in the title. The object of the game is not to flinch, and contestants that do so throughout three games each episode will be punished for doing so. They won't be the only ones suffering, however, as the stakes are raised as each host picks a contestant and will suffer alongside them if they are unsuccessful. The show is filmed on a remote farm in Ireland and is hosted by comedians Desiree Burch, Lloyd Griffith and Seann Walsh. Interested viewers presumably won't be punished for flinching while watching, as the series arrives on Netflix later this year.

Last, but certainly not least, psychological illusionist Derren Brown is back on Netflix with yet another special. Derren Brown: Sacrifice will show Brown attempt to psychologically manipulate one man into deciding to lay down his life for another man despite prejudices that suggest he'd do otherwise. The concept sounds very similar to The Push, in which Brown enticed unknowing applicants into committing what they believed was murder. It'll be interesting to see how Brown manages to pull this stunt off as Netflix intends to roll out the special before the year's end.
