Mindy Kaling is a television creator whom I have come to trust. I know her shows will showcase impressive comedy writing. Some of Kaling’s shows are my favorite television romantic comedies because they feel relatable. She creates great romantic comedy television shows, and that’s mainly because of her expertise at making unforgettable female characters.

These funny women have depth, are not afraid to be messy, feel genuine, and know the highs and lows of navigating the complications of love and life. After recently finishing Running Point, I was reminded of Kaling’s ability to create fully formed fictional women.

It made me think of some of my favorites in the Kaling television universe.

Mindy (The Mindy Project)

Mindy (Mindy Kaling) is the ultimate complicated girl boss. She’s successful at work, but struggling at almost every other aspect, especially her love life. Mindy has the same level of dysfunction you may expect from a male comedy doctor.

Most of her charm comes from her being such a mess. Mindy's life shows that you can have and do it all at your job but be borderline terrible at everything else.

Isla (Running Point)

As Isla, Kate Hudson reminds us just how good she is at acting and character embodiment. Isla on Running Point has to deal with and manage a lot of egotistical, judgmental, and some just plain stupid, men. She tackles this while also navigating her own complex and chaotic life.

The character is the perfect person to lead this team and company because the men surrounding her are hilarious, but she manages to upstage them at every turn — credit to the writing and Hudson’s screen presence for still being the star even when paired with very funny supporting actors.

Devi (Never Have I Ever)

Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) is not the typical teen girl. She’s nerdier and hornier, at least more than most on television. Never Have I Ever is easily one of the best teen rom-com shows ever created. That’s mainly because of Mindy Kaling and her team’s knowledge of the rom-com space. They implement some of the traits of the best films in this genre. It is also great because Devi is one of the ultimate romantic comedy leads.

She feels like a real teen girl with all her flaws, including not always being rational and temperamental at times. Never Have I Ever may have been Ramakrishnan’s breakout role, but she makes on-screen chemistry look easy. The Paxton (Darren Barnet) vs. Ben (Jaren Lewison) wars raged on for a reason. Ramakrishnan has so much chemistry with both actors.

Maya (Four Weddings and a Funeral)

I consider myself a girl’s girl, which means I support women’s rights and wrongs. Maya (Nathalie Emmanuel) commits a lot of wrongs during Four Weddings and a Funeral. If the show continued, we would likely see a lot more complications from Maya.

On paper, she sounds terrible. She slept with a married man and fell in love with her best friend’s ex-fiancé. However, Emmanuel exudes so much girl-next-door on-screen charm that it’s hard not to like her. Additionally, Four Weddings and a Funeral shows Maya’s layered personality, which makes her hard to hate, even if you don’t agree with all her actions.

Leighton (The Sex Lives of College Girls)

The problem with The Sex Lives of College Girls is that there are so many enjoyable characters played by equally likable actors. However, Leighton (Reneé Rapp) managed to win me over the most. Her journey with coming out and just evolving is one of the best parts of the first two seasons. This is what makes her Season 3 departure so hard of a readjustment.

Leighton is a mean girl who makes being mean look cool and charming. I would also argue that she may be one of the best LGBTQ+ characters of the last decade, and definitely in a Mindy Kaling TV show.

Tamara (The Mindy Project)

Tamara (Xosha Roquemore) is easily The Mindy Project’s funniest character. She starts the series in a limited role but easily becomes a scene-stealer. Tamara’s increased screen time just makes her even more likable.

Roquemore doesn’t get enough credit for her comedic timing. There are only a handful of Mindy Project characters that constantly make me laugh, and Tamara is the main one.

Nalini (Never Have I Ever)

Something I have noticed is that even the best teen shows’ writers put a lot of effort into the teen characters but neglect the parents. This isn’t the case with Never Have I Ever. The parents feel just as layered as the teens. Some of the parents I find even more interesting than the children.

Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan) is by far one of the best parent characters in the Mindy Kaling showverse. She’s just as complex as Devi. Nalini can be tough, but she’s also very caring and kind.

One of my issues with Never Have I Ever’s final season is that we don’t get enough of her. Hopefully, Kaling and Jagannathan will work together again, because I would love to see Jagannathan lead a romantic comedy. She's such a captivating actor.

Gemma (Four Weddings and a Funeral)

Gemma (Zoe Boyle) is the classic case of the seemingly unlikable character changing and showing real depth. She may have a stiff upper lip, but you can’t help but feel endeared towards her, especially after witnessing her heartbreaking journey.

Gemma and Duffy (John Reynolds) ended up becoming my favorite romance in Four Weddings and a Funeral. Their courtship just has charm. Gemma is one of the most complex characters of this miniseries, which makes her so compelling to watch.

Daphne (Velma)

Velma, for better or worse, is not a typical Scooby-Doo story. Therefore, these aren’t the versions of the characters that many may be used to. This isn’t your mother’s Daphne. That may be what makes her stand out in this animated series.

Voiced by Constance Wu, this version of the character is complicated, more sexually confident, and has an interesting origin story. Daphne is one of the fun evolutions in this Kaling animated series.

Ruby (Champions)

I may have been one of the few people who watched the entire short-lived Mindy Kaling series Champions. I mainly watched it because I thought Anders Holm and Kaling had great chemistry on The Mindy Project and wanted to see if they tapped into that on this series. The show follows a bachelor and his younger brother who have their lives rocked when his ex drops off a surprise child they had together 15 years ago.

Most of Champions revolves around the three male characters. However, Ruby (Fortune Feimster) is one of the series' regulars. Feimster is a comedian that Kaling often works with. She has played many funny side characters, but Champions is one of the rare shows that highlight her as a lead. The character is as strange and weird as you would expect, but still very funny.

I can’t wait to meet more thrilling and complex female characters in Mindy Kaling’s next television projects.

Mindy Kaling has been a steady force in Hollywood for many years, from her serendipitous beginnings on The Office to completing Season 3 of Sex Lives Of College Girls. While Kaling’s resume is vast and chock full of excellent projects, one of my favorites has always been her titular one –The Mindy Project. When I caught up with premiere photos for her latest Netflix subscription show, Running Point, I realized something: one of my favorites from the 2012 show, Ike Barinholtz, was in attendance. And that reunion has me wanting more from the two.

The eponymous 2010s series, where the duo previously worked together, followed Mindy Lahiri, a gynecologist in NYC, and her life through the ups and downs. Early in the first season, Morgan Tookers (Ike Barinholtz, who was also a writer on the show) is a comically questionable nurse who gets hired out of necessity. Morgan humorously seeks Mindy’s approval until they become buddies. Kaling and Barinholtz's comedy stylings together on screen as doctor and nurse, respectively, are my favorite part of the Fox show.

The Mindy Project Reunion of Kaling and Ike Barinholtz At The Running Point Premiere Made Me Happy

On February 13, the cast and crew of Running Point had a carpet premiere for the coming February 27 series. Of course, Mindy Kaling and Kate Hudson were in attendance along with Brenda Song, Max Greenfield, and Drew Tarver, among others. But when I realized Ike Barinholtz worked alongside the Ocean’s 8 actress behind the scenes, everyone else disappeared for me. I know that same Morgan-Mindy electric humor radiated off of both of them as they joked through photos.

What I can't help but think while looking at this photo of the two of them, alongside Kate Hudson and David Stassen, is that they’ve got that Schulman & Associates (the office they worked at on TMP) twinkle in their eye. As a fan, I’m begging them to get in front of the camera again. They’re essentially my modern-day Abbott & Costello. Anyways, check out the carpet pic for yourself:

With This Kaling-Barinholtz Reunion Behind The Camera Makes Me Want One In Front of The Camera

The best part of the coming series, premiering soon on our 2025 Netflix movie and TV schedule, has her pairing up with Ike Barinholtz again, and it has me excited. And while I have high hopes for the coming basketball comedy, I'd much rather see the pair for a new movie or show. Honestly, I’d watch them in anything, even if it was a personal YouTube channel where they cook food or unbox products together. Or a space odyssey or period piece! Whatever it is, I’ll be there, and who knows? It seems like there might even be possibilities of a Mindy Project reboot somewhere down the line.

As of now, the Late Night actress just received her Star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame along with a newly greenlit NYC-based show titled Not Suitable For Work. She's also still at work creating the long-awaited and highly-anticipated Legally Blonde 3. Meanwhile, Barinholtz is set to appear inThe Studio, and is in the process of acting in and producing a movie called Happy Life (directed by a Running Point peer). Time will tell if they intersect in any of these projects on screen, but you know I'm crossing my fingers for it.

I’m glad to get any Mindy Project reunion or rekindling these days. Hopefully, Running Point has a similar tone or energy to tide me over until Mindy Kaling and Ike Barinholtz reunite on the other side of the camera. Throughout the history of television, there are examples of characters from shows just disappearing. In one episode they are there, and in the next, they are gone without so much as an acknowledgment from the remaining characters. Or sometimes a half-baked reason that doesn't come until years later. It's like they never existed at all. This is our list meant to remember those characters we have lost to the curse of being written out with no explanation.

Chuck Cunningham - Happy Days

Maybe the most famous example of this is Chuck Cunningham (Gavan O'Herlihy), Richie and Joanie's older brother on Happy Days. His disappearance has become so famous it's become known as the "Chuck Cunningham Syndrome." Though he was never a main star, he was still around in the first season until one day he wasn't and he was never even mentioned again. Harsh.

Santiago Herrera - Friday Night Lights

Linebacker Santiago Herrera on Friday Night Lights was a pretty major character in the second season of the show. Despite seemingly being a leader on the team with Coach Taylor working with him a lot, Santiago vanished from the team after Season 2 and was never even mentioned again.

Monica Dawson - Heroes

On Heroes, Monica Dawson had a unique power that allowed her to imitate anyone around her's power. That would be one of the most useful powers anyone on the show had (save for Sylar). Dawson, played by Dana Davis, is a main character in Season 2 and then is dropped from the show and is never ever mentioned again, without a real explanation.

Mutt Schitt - Schitt's Creek

Mutt Schitt, played by Tim Rozon is the very good-looking son of Mayor Roland Schitt (Chris Elliot). He plays a big supporting role in the first two seasons of Schitt's Creek, especially as one of Alexis' potential love interests. He was seen less and less as the show went on until only being spotted once in Season 3 and one final time in Season 4 before never being sighted or mentioned again

Celia Hodes - Weeds

For a while, Celia Hodes (Elizabeth Perkins) was a semi-regular reoccurring character on Weeds. She seemed to idolize Nancy and hate her at the same time. Despite being an antagonist for the first four seasons, by Season 5 she's only mentioned occasionally in passing until after Season 6 when the character completely falls off the radar and is never heard from again.

Leah Murphy - Grey's Anatomy

Dr. Leah Murphy, played by Tessa Ferrer, had a fairly brief, but action-packed couple of seasons on Grey's Anatomy during Seasons 9 and 10. She was fired at one point, but earned her job back the character seemed like she might make it for the long, but it wasn't to be and after one brief appearance in Season 13, she completely disappeared from the show.

Tiger - The Brady Bunch

When The Brady Bunch first hit the airwaves, it was just the six kids that made up the blended family, there was also the boys' pet dog Tiger. Tiger often made a mess of things, including Mike and Carol's wedding, but he was beloved. Until he wasn't. Tragically, the dog who played Tiger was hit by a car and killed, and rather than replace him, the producers just wrote the poor mutt right out of the show, though his doghouse remained in the backyard for years later.

Mr. Turner - Boy Meets World

For a while there, it seemed like Mr. Turner (Anthony Tyler Quinn) might be a very important teacher on Boy Meets World as he mentored Shawn and even took him in for a time. He was a regular character for three seasons before he dropped off the face of the earth after Season 4. He was mentioned briefly in the series finale, but fans never really got any closure from his sudden departure from the cast.

Judy - Family Matters

One of the most notorious examples of a character simply vanishing was the youngest Winslow child on Family Matters, Judy, played by Jaimee Foxworth. After Season 4, she was completely gone from the show as though she'd never existed. For shame Carl! Ignoring one of your daughters!

John Bennett - Orange Is The New Black

John Bennett was a key character during the first three seasons of Orange Is The New Black, and even had an affair with one of the inmates (Daya) and got her pregnant. Despite this, by the end of Season 3, he had quit his job and was never really even mentioned again. Fan theories abound, but ultimately it was the real world interfering as actor Matt McGorry simply quit the show.

Mandy Hampton - The West Wing

Right up there with Chuck Cunningham in notoriety is Mandy Hampton (Moira Kelly) in The West Wing. A full cast member and one of the stars in the show's first season, she completely disappeared and was never even mentioned again from the beginning of Season 2 on. Like the "Chuck Cunningham Syndrome," her disappearance has become shorthand for this kind of thing happening with fans calling it "Going to Mandyville."

Ser Ilyn Payne - Game Of Thrones

Ser Ilyn Payne, played by the late Wilko Johnson, was one of the scariest characters in Game of Thrones. He was King Joffery's executioner and despite playing a larger role in the books, he disappeared from the show after Season 2. Johnson had a major cancer scare and though he didn't end up dying from it, he was given only a few months to live at the time. He wasn't recast out of respect for Johnson. He is mentioned later once by Tywin Lannister in Season 6, but he's never seen again on screen, nor is his absence ever explained.

Tina Pinciotti - That '70s Show

Donna Pinciotti (Laura Prepon) was referred to as an only child for most of The '70s Show. This, however, is an example of confusing retconning for many hardcore fans. In Season 1 of the show, Donna had a sister, Tina Pinciotti (Amanda Fuller) and she is even seen on screen, not just mentioned. After one more throwaway joke in Season 2, Tina is never even mentioned again and Donna refers to herself as an only child. Did something sinister happen? We'll never know.

Mike - My Three Sons

As the name of the show would imply, on My Three Sons, there were, at least in the beginning, three sons. Mike, Robbie, and Chip were Steve Douglas' sons on the show for the first years. Mike, the oldest, played by Tim Considine, who left the show after Season 5, went to college and is barely ever mentioned again and he's never seen again. He doesn't even show up for weddings. He's just...gone.

Seven - Married... With Children

In Season 7 of Married... With Children, Peg's 12-year-old nephew Seven is introduced. It's a clear attempt at the "Cousin Oliver" effect when a young, precocious kid is randomly introduced to make the show "cuter." For Seven, however, it doesn't last long, as after 12 appearances, the show simply forgets about him, despite a few inside jokes (like appearing on the side of a milk carton).

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

In the pilot episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Detective Daniels is introduced as part of the team in the squad house. He seems like he'll be at least a semi-occurring character, but instead, he's never seen or heard from again.

Ben Geller - Friends

Even fans of Friends can admit that Ross (David Schwimmer) is pretty awful most of the time. Nothing is worse, however, than how he seemingly abandoned his first son, Ben. Ben wasn't a regular on the show, but he did appear multiple times. At least until his daughter, Emma, is born with Rachel. Ben, who was played by Cole Sprouse for a couple of seasons, is never even mentioned again and never meets his half-sister. Harsh, Ross.

Gwen Grandy - The Mindy Project

Gwen Grandy (Anna Camp) is one of Mindy's best friends on The Mindy Project. They talk all the time and Gwen even named Mindy as her newborn's godmother. Then Season 2 happened and Gwen was just gone from Mindy's life without even an explanation. Poof, the best friend is gone forever.

Robin Sylvester - Glee

Did you know Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) on Glee had a child? You might vaguely remember that she was pregnant at one point and in Season 3 fans even meet the child. Then the baby is hardly ever mentioned again and never seen on screen. We know that Sue was selfish and mean, but wow.

Tori Scott - Saved By The Bell

Tori Scott, played by actress Leanna Creel in the final season of Saved By The Bell was a very brief, but very serious girlfriend of Zach Morris. Sadly for Tori, after Jessie and Kelly returned to school after leaving for a time, the character was unceremoniously dropped and never mentioned again. It's not even clear if Zach broke up with her or if she fell off a cliff. She was just gone.

Amy Jessup - Fringe

Before she was cast in Suits, Meghan Markle had an all-too-brief role in Fringe. Markle's character Amy Jessup was introduced in Season 2 of the show and seemed to be a new, full member of the team. However, after two episodes, she was gone and no one ever found out why. She's never mentioned again,

Jenny Kelly - Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Sometimes there is off-screen drama that causes a sudden disappearance and that may be the case here with the character Jenny Kelly (Michelle Beaudoin) in Sabrina The Teenage Witch. Jenny was Sabrina's best friend and a major character in Season 2, but she didn't even get the dignity of a proper send-off when she suddenly disappeared from the show, never to even be mentioned again.

Mark Brendanawicz - Parks And Recreation

Mark Brendanawicz, played by Paul Schneider, was a key character in the early days of Parks And Recreation until he was written out completely when the actor left the show and the producers re-tooled and brought in new characters. Brendanawicz was never mentioned again.

Mo-Mo - Nurse Jackie

Mo-Mo (Haaz Sleiman) in the first season of Nurse Jackie provides a lot of much-needed fun and comic relief with his snarky asides to Jackie (Edie Falco). Sadly, it seems the show's producers didn't think the character was really necessary so he was written out after Season 1 without much explanation, despite being such buddies with Jackie. He deserved much better.

Molly Parker - The Facts Of Life

The character of Molly Parker, played by the great Molly Ringwald in the first seasons of The Facts Of Life and a couple of episodes of Diff'rent Strokes, met an unfortunate end when Ringwald was fired from the show in favor of other, older actors. Her leaving wasn't given any kind of explanation until years later when it's briefly mentioned that she left to become an actress. It seems like everything worked out just fine for Molly Ringwald.

Dr. Grace Miller - Scrubs

Dr. Grace Miller on Scrubs, played by Bellamy Young, was introduced with a lot of hype and promotion. She was essentially playing the female version of Dr. Cox and fans immediately hated the character. The backlash was so bad that she was dumped after just a handful of appearances as though she never existed. It's too bad because Young was great in the role.

President John Keeler - 24

24 went through presidents like people with a cold go through Kleenex. One president who lasted a couple of seasons was President John Keeler (Geoff Pierson), but after he was shot down in Air Force One and left incapacitated, his VP, Charles Logan, took over. It's completely unclear if Keeler died or was simply too injured to return as the character is basically never mentioned again.

Nebula Lawrence - Boy Meets World

Boy Meets World had a little bit of a habit of introducing seemingly important characters only to have them fall by the wayside without explaining why. Nebula "Nebby" Lawrence (Krystee Clark) is the perfect example. She was introduced in an episode of Season 1 and as her name implies, she is the sister of Topanga. That was her first and only appearance on the show and for the rest of the show's run Topanga is an only child. Nebby is never heard from again.

Caitlin - Heroes

Caitlin (Katie Carr) on Heroes gets at least a little explanation as to why she disappeared. She is introduced as a love interest for Peter in Season 2 and together they travel to the future, where she gets stuck and seemingly remains there forever, as she's never mentioned again, nor is her ultimate fate.

Frank Cubitoso - The Sopranos

Frank Cubitoso (Frank Pellegrino) was introduced as the head of the New Jersey office of the FBI in the first season of The Sopranos. He plays a recurring and pivotal role in trying to take down Tony and his crew for a while until he pretty much disappears after the murder of Adriana.

Nina Cassady - Law & Order

Characters coming and going from Law & Order was pretty standard fare for the long-running procedural. Most of the time though, they at least get some kind of send-off or at least an explanation. That was not the case for Detective Nina Cassady, played by Milena Govich, who lasted just one season before she was gone without so much as a hint as to what happened to her.

Behrooz Araz - 24

The Araz family were the main villains in Season 4 of 24 and while the fate of Navi and Dina Araz is clear (both are killed), the fate of their son Behrooz is left hanging. He is traded in a prisoner swap for Jack Bauer and the men who take him find the hidden trackers CTU hid on him. But after that, he just disappears and is never heard from again.

Some people might like to argue that streaming, in becoming our dominant form of media consumption, has ruined the television industry. Well, there is no doubt that it has changed the industry in many ways and, in some cases, for the better. 

There are many TV shows that are now regarded as classics but might not have earned such an honor if not for audiences discovering it on a streaming platform, helping boost its appeal in a way traditional television could not for whatever reason. Let's take a look at some of the most beloved TV shows that were made more popular (or even saved) by streaming. 

The Wire (2002-2008)

In its initial run, The Wire was already considered one of the best shows on HBO, if not of all time, for its refreshing grounded depiction of urban crime in modern Baltimore from both sides of the law. However, thanks to having a Max subscription (formerly known as HBO Max and, earlier, HBO GO), new generations of viewers have been able to witness David Simon's masterpiece.

You (2018-2024)

Even many of the biggest fans of You might not realize that the serial killer drama starring Penn Badgley is not a true Netflix original. It was canceled after one season on the Lifetime Network and, after becoming a surprise hit on Netflix, the platform picked it up for four more seasons.

Schitt's Creek (2015-2020)

Despite achieving instant success in its home nation of Canada on CBC, creator Dan and Eugene Levy's sitcom following a family's riches-to-rags story went underseen in the States for years on the Pop Network. Luckily, when the series dropped on Netflix, America suddenly could not get enough of the Schitt's Creek cast, the comedy's remarkable quotability, and surprisingly heartfelt moments.

The Expanse (2015-2022)

Based on a series of novels by Daniel Abrahams and Ty Franck (and James S. A. Corey), The Expanse quickly found a following on SyFy as one of the network's smartest and most exciting dramas and, yet, it still got the boot after three seasons. Fortunately, the adventures of James Holden (Steven Strait) and his crew's defense against a conspiracy affecting the colonized solar system were able to continue as one of the best sci-fi TV shows on Amazon Prime for three more seasons.

Suits (2011-2019)

Despite being one of the longest-running series on USA Network, Suits really became a hit in its later years after gaining traction as one of the most-watched TV shows on Netflix. Of course, Suits cast member Meghan Markle's marriage to Prince Harry likely had an influence on the legal drama's success.

The Office (2005-2014)

Greg Daniels' Americanized update of the hilarious British sitcom was certainly a hit on NBC, but its fanbase grew exponentially when it became one of the highest-viewed series on Netflix. It is no wonder why Peacock paid the platform $500 million for the streaming rights to The Office and even released special Superfan cuts of select episodes.

Letterkenny (2016-2023)

To be honest, Letterkenny, which follows the day-to-day lives of people from the titular rural town in the Great White North, already originated on a streaming service: the Canadian-exclusive platform, Crave. However, when it became available in the United States with a Hulu subscription, the quirky sitcom's fanbase took a Texas-size expansion.

Firefly (2002-2003)

There is a variety of reasons why Firefly was canceled after Fox aired only 11 episodes, from a doomed time slot to misguided marketing. Luckily, even before streaming helped widen its fanbase, the now beloved sci-fi TV show following a crew of outlaws traveling beyond the stars released a DVD set that allowed audiences to see the epic Western-style cosmic adventures they missed out on.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008)

Following the journey of a young man born with the ability to manipulate the elements air, earth, fire, and water, Avatar: The Last Airbender was a huge hit during its initial run on Nickelodeon. It would only become even more popular when it became available to stream on Netflix, which would go on to produce a live-action series update in 2024.

Breaking Bad (2008-2013)

According to Variety, after Breaking Bad won the Best Drama Series Emmy in 2013, creator Vince Gilligan admitted he owed the success of his groundbreaking drama to Netflix, which later produced El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. The thriller, following a terminally high school chemistry teacher (played by Bryan Cranston) turning to crime to support his family, could barely be called a hit during its few years on AMC.

 Freaks And Geeks (1999-2000)

One of the first titles that come to mind when people think of series that ended too soon is Freaks and Geeks, which was canceled by NBC after one season for the typical reasons: misguided marketing and a poor time slot. Since most of the Freaks and Geeks cast went on to take Hollywood by storm, the coming-of-age dramedy has become one of the most acclaimed series of its time by fans who discovered in the digital age.

Criminal Minds (2005-Present)

After lasting a whopping 15 seasons on CBS, Criminal Minds continued to captivate audiences as one of the most popular crime TV shows on Netflix. The procedural drama's enduring success eventually led to its revival, on Paramount+.

Manifest (2018-2023)

When NBC canned it after just three seasons, fans prayed that Netflix would swoop in to renew Manifest and, luckily, their wish came true. A fourth and final season of the sci-fi drama, about a commercial jet that suddenly reappears five years after mysteriously vanishing, debuted on the streaming platform, allowing it to have the smooth landing creator Jeff Rake intended.

Lucifer (2016-2021)

Based on a DC Vertigo comic book, Lucifer — starring Tom Ellis as the Devil, taking human form to be an LAPD consultant — debuted on Fox, where it lasted only three seasons. Soon after, it would be hailed as one of the best DC TV shows on Netflix when it was renewed for three more seasons exclusively on the platform.

Community (2009-2015)

Ironically enough, when Dan Harmon's comedy about a close-knit group of community students first transitioned from NBC to a streaming exclusive on the now-defunct Yahoo! Screen, it was considered a disaster. However, fans would go on to revisit the best episodes of Community on Hulu, Netflix, or Peacock, keeping the #SixSeasonsAndAMovie dream alive. 

Gilmore Girls (2000-2007)

One of the most popular shows on The CW (when it was still called The WB) was Gilmore Girls, which would only remain popular and acquire more fans who discovered it with their Netflix subscription. The streaming platform would even serve as the home of a four-episode sequel series called Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

Friends (1994-2004)

Could Friends have been a bigger bit than it was during its ten-year run on NBC? As it turns out, yes, since the popular '90s TV show became a monster hit on Netflix and, once it left the platform, likely inspired many fans to get a Max subscription just so they could keep the binge going.

Luther (2010-2019)

Some of the best evidence of the enduring popularity of Luther — an acclaimed British crime thriller starring Idris Elba in the brilliant but cantankerous title role — can be found on Netflix. In 2023, the platform distributed a feature-length spin-off called Luther: The Fallen Sun, which quickly became its highest-watched movie and led to a deal for more films.

Arrested Development (2003-2019)

Despite never getting the ratings it needed to be a hit during its three-season run on Fox, Arrested Development was remembered fondly as one of the most hilarious cult favorite TV shows of all time. That enduring legacy led to its revival in 2017 as "a Netflix semi-original series."

Boy Meets World (1993-2000)

In its prime, Boy Meets World was one of the must-see comedies from ABC's TGIF Block in the 1990s and would later spawn a sequel series following Cory (Ben Savage) and Topanga's (Danielle Fishel) daughter, Riley (Rowan Blanchard) called Girl Meets World. The success of the Disney Channel series, also starring Sabrina Carpenter, inspired a new generation of fans to check out the original with their Disney+ subscription. 

Futurama (1999-Present)

Creator Matt Groening's animated satire about an average 20th Century man who wakes up from an accidental, 1000-year cryogenic slumber initially ran for just four seasons on Fox, was revived on Comedy Central from 2008 to 2013, and then, a decade later, became an exclusive on Hulu where it is more popular than ever. At this rate, it looks like Futurama might last well into the future.

Teen Wolf (2011-2017)

MTV's darker take on a funny coming-of-age creature feature from the '80s was a surprise hit, even as one of the best horror TV shows on Hulu in the years since it ended. The continued interest in the series on streaming would lead to a feature-length continuation that premiered on Paramount+ in early 2023.

iCarly (2007-2012, 2021-2023)

Miranda Cosgrove followed her role as the mischievous Megan on Drake & Josh by starring on the Nickelodeon sitcom as a teen internet sensation. People who grew up with the show would rediscover their love for it as adults when Paramount+ revived iCarly with more mature audiences in mind.

The Mindy Project (2012-2017)

Creator and star Mindy Kaling's first major follow-up after playing Kelly Kapoor in NBC's The Office cast was the aptly titled The Mindy Project, in which she plays an OB/GYN struggling to balance her personal and professional life. It premiered on Fox, where it remained for three seasons, before moving exclusively to Hulu for the latter half of its run.

Longmire (2012-2017)

Based on a series of novels by Craig Johnson, Longmire is a neo-Western drama starring Australian actor Robert Taylor as the titular Wyoming sheriff who brings his own brand of justice to his county. Despite debuting on A&E as the cable network's highest-rated original drama, it was not renewed for a fourth season, leading Netflix to step in and become its home for another three years.

Trailer Park Boys (2001-2018)

A show that Letterkenny fans would enjoy if they have not heard of it already is Trailer Park Boys — another comedy set in rural Canada which, for its first seven years, aired on a channel exclusive to the country called Showcase. A newfound interest in the documentary-style series and its feature-length spin-offs in the United States led Netflix to acquire the show in 2012, lasting several more seasons and even spawning more specials and an animated series.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020)

Before a new Star Wars TV show premiered on Disney+ every few months or so, one of the most beloved small-screen titles to come from a galaxy far, far away was Star Wars: The Clone Wars. However, the Force initially could have been stronger with this one as it was canceled by Cartoon Network in 2013 before gaining newfound popularity on Netflix (where a new season was distributed) the following year and, later, getting revived for one more batch of episodes on DIsney+ in 2020.

Parks And Recreation (2009-2015) 

Despite being the brainchild of The Office producers Greg Daniels and Michael Schur and starring former SNL cast member Amy Poehler in the lead, Parks and Recreation struggled to find its footing on NBC for its first couple of years. The mockumentary-style political satire got a bit of a boost in popularity once it dropped on Netflix and, for years after it ended, earned a reputation as one of the most popular series on the platform.

White Collar (2009-2014)

The show that made a star out of actor Matt Bomer is White Collar, in which he stars as a suave professional criminal who works with the FBI to catch other cons like him. Like many other USA original series, the dramedy was a much bigger hit on Netflix than it was during its initial run on the network.

Designated Survivor (2016-2019)

Kiefer Sutherland stars in Designated Survivor as the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, who is suddenly appointed President after everyone in the chain of command above him is killed in a catastrophic attack. The political drama was canceled after only two years on ABC but would go on for one more season on Netflix.

The Nanny (1993-1999)

Co-creator and star Fran Drescher is best known for playing Fran Fine on The Nanny, which had a strong run on CBS in the 1990s. The sitcom is noted for appealing to a new generation when it dropped on Max.

The Killing (2011-2014)

The American version of the Danish television series Forbrydelsen, The Killing, originally premiered on AMC, which would cancel the dark crime drama after its third season, which almost did not happen. The series then made an official transition to Netflix, where its fourth and final season was distributed.

After many years of South Asian characters in movies and TV being largely stereotypical side characters, there’s recently been a shift in Hollywood. In recent years, there are more and more examples of leading characters played by actors who have roots in India and Pakistan, among other locations in South Asia. Plus, they tell stories that don’t put them into a small boxes, and represent a larger experience that is what representation in film and TV is all about. 

We all deserve to be seen on the big and small screen, and characters like these open more doors for this community that makes up 25 percent of the population of the world. From regency romance to a Marvel superhero, we’re celebrating some recent great South Asian characters in movies and television. Check it out: 

Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) - Bridgerton

Bridgerton became the talk of the ton in 2020 when the Netflix series became the most successful original TV show for the streaming service. For the recent Season 2, Julia Quinn’s The Viscount Who Loved Me was adapted for television with its lead Kate played by British-Indian Sex Education actress, Simone Ashley. For the romance, the character was altered slightly to be Kate Sharma instead of Sheffield, with her and her family’s backstory being from India. The 2022 season seamlessly infused Indian culture into Kate and her sister Edwina’s identity whilst also ushering in an Indian lead of a romance set in the Regency era and for a very mainstream series. 

Ruben Stone (Riz Ahmed) - Sound Of Metal 

When it comes to South Asian actors being considered for award season buzz, oftentimes the storylines have been around starring in a story about and set in their home country such as 1982’s Gandhi and 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire. Riz Ahmed changed this when he received an Oscar nomination for Sound Of Metal, becoming the first Pakistani actor and first Muslim actor to be included in the Best Actor category. In the drama, Ahmed plays a drummer in a metal band and drug addict who loses his hearing and must join a shelter for deaf recovering addicts. Ahmed’s incredible performance included the actor learning American Sign Language and how to drum like a pro. 

Dev Shah (Aziz Ansari) - Master Of None

After Aziz Ansari ascended into popularity on Parks and Recreation as the sarcastic and entrepreneurial Tom Haverford, the comedian created his own series in Netflix’s Master of None. The show, which he also starred in and wrote, really showed the actor’s personal perspective as an actor and Indian-American immigrant through a somewhat fictional lens. One especially memorable episode is called “Indians on TV” where he touches on how Indian actors are often expected to be stereotypes with heavy accents. In the most recent season of the show, Ansari took a step back from starring to highlight Lena Waithe’s character while he showcased his impressive directorial approach. 

Lucy Gulliver (Geraldine Viswanathan) - The Broken Hearts Gallery

The romantic comedy is a beloved genre, but over the years it has been plagued with the same faces and tropes over and over again. In 2020, though, Aussie actress Geraldine Viswanathan got to shine as the lead of The Broken Hearts Gallery alongside Stranger Things’ Dacre Montgomery. In the movie, Viswanathan plays a young woman who recently suffered a breakup and decides to start a gallery devoted to fallen relationships. The movie delivers a quality and unique rom-com that allows its half-Indian (of Tamil ancestry) main character / actress to lead the type of movie that has gone to white actresses over the years, and without her identity having to be her core personality trait, either.

Javed Khan (Viveik Kalra) - Blinded By The Light

Blinded By The Light premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before becoming a beloved (yet underrated) dramedy in 2019. The movie, directed by Gurinder Chadha, who previously made history as the helmer of Bend It Like Beckham, is about the son of Pakistani migrant parents, Javed, who falls in love with Bruce Springsteen’s music and uses it as an inspiration to write his own poetry. The story is inspired by the life of journalist Sarfraz Manzoor, who co-wrote the Blinded By The Light script. The movie and the character of Javed show how music can speak to and connect with anyone, including an immigrant kid who feels otherwise like an outsider in his life. 

Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) - The Mindy Project 

After Mindy Kaling wrote for and portrayed Kelly Kapoor on The Office, the comedian pitched her own comedy to FOX, The Mindy Project. She created, produced and starred in the series about a gynecologist’s attempts to balance her personal and professional life. The series that aired for six seasons brought Indian representation to television in a big way, with Kaling becoming the first Indian American to have her own TV show on a major network, and in a way that wasn’t solely focused on her ethnicity, but addressing the life of a working career woman, and later, motherhood.  

Sheriff Hassan (Rahul Kohli) - Midnight Mass

Mike Flanagan’s incredible Netflix horror franchise continued in 2021 with an original series called Midnight Mass, which served as an existential discussion about faith alongside its scares. Among the cast was the groundbreaking character of Sheriff Hassan, played by Rahul Kohli (previously in The Haunting of Bly Manor and iZombie). He played the island’s sheriff, who is a Muslim who struggles with his teenage son to fit into the town’s predominantly Catholic population. Within the series, Midnight Mass beautifully represents a South Asian Muslim family and their difficulties in the western world as all the spooky things take place. 

Rhea Kumar (Avantika Vandanapu) - Spin

Disney Channel is known for propelling young stars into mega stardom, such as Zendaya, Miley Cyrus, and Zac Efron, with their original films and TV shows. In 2021, the network made a massive move in representation by releasing the new DCOM, Spin, which is about an Indian-American teen who works at her tight-knit family’s restaurant, but realizes her true passion is to be an EDM DJ. The movie highlights Indian culture in a beautiful way and allows its young star, Avantika Vandanapu, to shine in a breakout performance. 

Alex Parrish (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) - Quantico

Another network television win for a great South Asian character is Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ leading role in the ABC series, Quantico. The Indian A-lister moved to the American market to star in the thrilling drama about an FBI agent who becomes the prime suspect of a terrorist attack. It’s another first, with the actress becoming the first Indian actor to lead a primetime drama on American TV. But, Chopra Jonas also did so by playing a charismatic, badass, and intriguing character during the series’ three seasons. 

Sir Gawain (Dev Patel) - The Green Knight

Medieval epics have always been led by white men, but David Lowery’s 2021 adaptation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight gave Dev Patel a unique role in that space. The existentialist storyline allowed Patel to deliver a meaty performance that comments on the hero’s journey in a refreshing (yet taxing) trudge to meet the Green Knight. Patel’s performance is one of the best of 2021 and should have really gotten more Oscar recognition. 

Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) - Never Have I Ever 

Following Mindy Kaling’s The Mindy Project, she moved behind the scenes completely to create Never Have I Ever, a coming of age Netflix series. It stars newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who hails from Canada and was born to Tamil parents. It is loosely based on Kaling’s childhood experiences, as it follows an Indian-American Tamil high school student dealing with the sudden death of her father, who decides to change her social status, though it does not come easy. The show is much like a lot of high school series in a lot of ways, but it also adds the layers of her grappling and balancing her Indian-American identity as well. 

Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) - Eternals 

After Kumail Nanjiani made waves as a Pakistani-American comedian, writer, and actor in projects like Silicon Valley and The Big Sick, he was cast as the first South Asian superhero in Marvel’s Eternals. Not only does the movie include a big-screen Bollywood dance sequence, but Nanjiani got super ripped to take on the role because he wanted to make sure the first Pakistani superhero “could hang with Thor and Captain America.” Kingo is an Eternal and flashy actor who continued this breaking of stereotypes and continues to show Hollywood that South Asian actors have range and can fit in all genres far and wide.  

In just the past few years, there’s been an uptick in South Asian representation and a lot of different firsts for its large population in the framework of Hollywood. Here’s to more great South Asian characters in the years ahead. We’ll look out for more examples of them in new TV shows and upcoming movie releases.

Ever since New Girl came to an end not that long ago, I’ve found myself missing the great moments that the show would offer me, whether that be the shenanigans that Winston would cause with his little (or big) pranks, or the best one-liners from Schmidt, or even watching Jess and Nick be an adorable yet complicated couple. I can re-watch the show all I want, but sometimes I just need to find something else that’s similar, but not the same.

But luckily, there are plenty of shows out there like New Girl with some similar themes and premises on streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu and more. This is where you can watch crazy and kooky friends try to live their lives, all while getting into the most ridiculous of situations, some of which might be showing up soon on our 2021 fall TV schedule. From Netflix shows like Emily in Paris, to older classics, here are some shows like New Girl that I think you would like.

Shrill (Hulu)

In this Hulu original series, Shrill follows Annie, a woman who wants to change her life and make it as a journalist while dealing with bad boyfriends, parents that are sick, and a boss that makes it almost impossible to work - all while the world seems to not think she is good enough because of her weight.

Starring Aidy Bryant of Saturday Night Live fame, Shrill offers fans of New Girl the same story of a young woman just trying to make it in the world. The combination of comedy with the themes of structured society and what it means to be yourself really make this show stand out above the rest. There’s no denying that this is definitely a great comedy series - but one that has heart as well.

Love Life (HBO Max)

HBO Max has been coming out with some interesting original shows since the launch of the streaming service, like the newly rebooted Gossip Girl, or the Kaley Cuoco-led The Flight Attendant. However, one of my favorites so far has been Love Life. In this anthology series, we follow a new lead character each season, from their first relationship to their very last.

If you loved the relationships in New Girl, this is a great show for you. The first season follows Anna Kendrick’s character, Darby, as she looks for love, and the mix of romance and comedy makes this one of HBO Max’s best shows so far. Also, the friendship between Darby and Sam (played by Zoe Chao) is to die for and I love them so much. Love Life Season 2 will star William Jackson Harper from The Good Place, according to Variety, so if you want to catch up on the series, check it out now before a new story starts!

Friends (HBO Max)

I feel like everyone has heard of Friends at some point in their lives. Friends takes place in New York City, and stars six friends in their twenties - later in their thirties - as they try to navigate their adult lives through their friendships, romantic relationships, careers, and more - getting into shenanigans along the way.

In my opinion, I don’t think any other network TV program has ever become quite as big as Friends. While there were plenty of sitcoms beforehand that had friends living together, Friends became a worldwide hit and I personally believe it was the blueprint for shows like New Girl where people are living together. The chemistry between the Friends cast is great, the jokes hysterical, the storylines emotional - it’s truly iconic in every way. The only thing I don’t believe is that they somehow afforded that NYC apartment.

Young And Hungry (Netflix)

In Young and Hungry, Josh, who is a young tech entrepreneur, hires Gabi, a young food blogger, to be his personal chef. While some people might doubt her skills, Gabi sets out to prove her worth to her boss so she can keep her job.

I know the premise sounds a bit typical at first, but Young and Hungry is anything but. For fans of New Girl, I feel that this show has a lot of the same comedy quirks and jokes that New Girl would have, mixed in with some great-looking food and cute romances that will make you smile. Emily Osment also shines in this series as the leading lady, making Gabi truly one of those characters that you just have to root for.

Community (Netflix)

In Community, when Jeff Winger is disbarred from his law firm after it was discovered he was faking having a bachelor’s degree from Columbia, he enrolls in Greendale Community College to earn a legitimate degree. However, when he enrolls there, he quickly becomes part of a group of students who all have their own quirky traits and characteristics.

Dan Harmon, the creator of the adult animation Rick and Morty, created Community. And let me say that if you love the comedy in New Girl, you’ll adore Community just as much. Not only is the Community cast awesome and have great chemistry together, the show has a lot of heart despite never taking itself too seriously. Plus, it launched the careers of several stars, like Donald Glover, Danny Pudi and many more. Remember Abed’s prediction - six seasons and a movie, so hopefully we’ll be getting that movie someday, so now you have to watch it.

Jane The Virgin (Netflix)

What I love about this show is that it’s based on Spanish telenovelas, so you know it’s going to be dramatic. When Jane in Jane the Virgin goes to visit her gynecologist, something crazy happens. See, Jane was raised in a religious household, and wants to save her virginity for marriage. But at her visit, she is accidentally inseminated, where she inevitably becomes pregnant.

I know, the premise sounds completely ridiculous, but this CW show is truly one of its best. Gina Rodriguez is a star and rocks it in her role as Jane, with an amazing Jane the Virgin cast beside her, creating heartfelt stories with several twists that will make you either laugh, cry, or both. For fans of New Girl, this show has just the right amount of ridiculousness to keep you watching, just like New Girl had.

Happy Endings (Netflix)

Happy Endings follows six best friends, who live in Chicago, all of whom have their own dysfunctional lives and adventures, and are trying to somehow navigate through their lives thus far.

I’ll get straight into it - Happy Endings almost feels a little bit like the Friends of Chicago, which makes it perfect for fans of New Girl. Honestly, it should have gone on for several more seasons besides just three. The chemistry between this cast is just amazing, especially between Damon Wayans Jr. and Eliza Coupe as a couple. Everyone plays so well off of each other and makes you laugh in the best ways. I’m still so upset that it ended after three seasons, but at the very least, you can watch it now.

The Mindy Project (Hulu)

In this series created by Mindy Kaling, The Mindy Project follows Mindy Lahiri, who works as an obstetrician/gynecologist in New York City. She tries to balance both her personal life and her professional life, all while surrounded by her co-workers in a small medical practice, who have their own fun traits and quirks as well.

I think what I love the most about this series for New Girl fans is that Mindy’s character reminds me a lot of Jess, except in a totally different job field, obviously. They’re both trying to do well in their careers and make the best out of bad situations while constantly trying to handle their personal issues as well. Mindy Kaling really brought her all to this series and showed off her comedy chops along with her story-writing skills.

Emily In Paris (Netflix)

This Netflix original series follows Emily, a girl from Chicago, who unexpectedly gets a job opportunity in Paris - hence the title, Emily in Paris. She is tasked with bringing an American perspective to a venerable French marketing firm.

Okay, controversies with this show aside - I actually do enjoy Emily in Paris and think it would be good for New Girl fans as well, because this is another situation where Emily reminds me a lot of Jess. It’s this young woman who is thrown into a situation out of nowhere and has to make the best of it to somehow succeed. While they are two very different stories, I believe fans of the show will enjoy Emily in Paris - if not for the drama it brings, but for the great scenic shots you get of Paris. With a Season 2 of Emily in Paris on the way, it's definitely worth a watch.

Friends From College (Netflix)

As the last on this list, Friends from College is anything but the least. This Netflix show follows a group of close-knit friends from Harvard who are all in their 40s, and are trying to navigate their intertwined lives, through work, romance, and several other factors.

This series is another one of those Netflix shows that I think ended too soon, because the cast for this was just outstanding. With stars like Keegan-Michael Key, Fred Savage and more in the cast, I don’t know how it could get better. But what really makes this a great show for fans of New Girl are the messy romances. Yeah, you know the ones - where one person is secretly dating two people (cough, Schmidt cough) or any of the other ridiculous plotlines you could think of. I still think Friends from College could have had such a great story if it continued with more seasons, but we’ll have to just deal with the two seasons we got.

I know that the loss of New Girl episodes is a shame and we will all miss our goofballs in that loft in California, but at least we can fill the void with plenty of other TV shows. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go watch the Friends reunion for the umpteenth time.

Cancellation isn't the death knell that it used to be. In our era of bountiful cable stations and a seemingly endless array of streaming services, it's easier than ever to bring your favorite series back through a new home. It's a luxury that's not afforded to every show, of course, but several current or recently-concluded series, including Lucifer, Supergirl, Last Man Standing, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, have been renewed at another station or streamer to warm critical/commercial success. Here are just a few examples of TV shows that got a second chance — thanks to a second network or streaming service.

Lucifer (Aired On Fox, Saved By Netflix)

Quite fittingly, Lucifer has weathered a good bit of hell throughout its six-season run. Specifically, during its first season on Fox, the DC series saw mixed reviews but high viewership. Nevertheless, while the reviews got better, the ratings got worse. While the show left a loyal fanbase, the ratings were too low to justify its high budget. After three seasons, Lucifer was hellbound. Yet, thanks to its vocal fanbase, the once-doomed series became heaven-sent through Netflix. Under its new streaming home, Lucifer gained more freedom to divulge in its devilish delights, helping the show become a popular favorite for the world-famous service. It received a fourth and fifth season — the latter split in half due to COVID-19 — with a sixth and final season on the horizon.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Aired On Fox, Saved By NBC)

Following the rising success of Parks and Recreation, Michael Schur and Dan Goor set up shop at Fox with Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a comical, high-energy police procedural show starring Andy Samberg. The comedy series was a critical hit from the get-go, and it was heavily viewed during its first season. But while the show remained an award-winning program, the ratings casually dripped over time. After five seasons, B99 was cancelled.

But that wasn't the end. NBC (who initially sold the series over to Fox) heard the cries of its vocal fanbase and decided to bring it over to its familiar slate of comedy favorites. Brooklyn Nine-Nine spiked in viewership in its new home, though the creators decided to end the series with its upcoming eighth season. Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8 will premiere in August 2021.

Last Man Standing (Aired On ABC, Saved By Fox)

Amusingly enough, Last Man Standing didn't have firm standing during its nine-season run. Premiering on ABC in 2011, the Tim Allen-starring series lasted six seasons before the American Broadcast Company pulled the plug. Even though the comedy show was their second-highest rated sitcom during the 2016-2017 season, ABC discontinued the program. The reason for Last Man Standing's sudden cancellation — whether it was due to scheduling or its conservative bend — is contested, but Fox gave it a second home.

Since Last Man Standing was produced under 20th Century Fox Television, it made sense for the station to continue running the series on their channel, particularly as the outraged fans petitioned heavily for its renewal. In 2018, Last Man Standing returned to TV through Fox, where the sitcom stayed until its ninth and final season. Following a delayed production due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the series finale aired on May 20, 2021.

Nashville (Aired On ABC, Saved By CMT)

In 2012, Nashville was one of the hottest new shows on ABC. Earning wide acclaim and receiving millions of viewers, the country music soap opera series was an early hit for the broadcast station. Alas, while the TV show never went down in critics' estimation, Nashville dipped in viewership in the seasons to follow, causing the station to drop the music drama after four seasons. Nevertheless, while the writers had a happy-ever-after ending prepared in the event of a cancellation, the show's producers were so confident in its continued success that they opted to conclude the season on a giant cliffhanger, enticing viewers to keep following the series at its new home — wherever that would be.

Particularly as the fans remained vocal about their desire to see Nashville back in the spotlight for an encore, it was finally revealed in June 2016 that CMT was partnering with Hulu to keep the show rocking. With that, the Country Music Television network produced Nashville's final two seasons, with the series finale aired on July 28th, 2018.

Supergirl (Aired On CBS, Saved By The CW)

Expectations were sky-high for Supergirl. Receiving a series commitment in 2014, CBS showed a lot of confidence in this DC series, bankrolling its blockbuster-esque, special effects-heavy 20 episode run with conviction. While the show was a critical darling with millions of viewers, Warner Bros. Television was in the midst of building its DC universe on The CW, which aired Arrow and The Flash, the latter premiering around the same time as Supergirl. Thus, it makes sense that Supergirl relocated to the other station, where it didn't secure as many viewers, admittedly, but earned the same enthusiastic praise. Plus, the comic book series had the flexibility to fuse its narrative into the expanding TV-based DC world. Through The CW, Supergirl received an additional five seasons, including an ongoing sixth and final season, which premiered in late March.

The Mindy Project (Aired On Fox, Saved By Hulu)

Following the star's tenure on NBC's ever-enduring The Office, it made perfect sense that Fox's expectations were high for The Mindy Project, Mindy Kaling's personalized sitcom that played into her brand of adorable awkwardness. Alas, while the reviews were very kind to the romantic comedy series, ratings were a struggle over the seasons and Fox pulled the plug, but that wasn't the end of The Mindy Project. In 2015, Hulu saw promise in continuing the series under their banner. Thus, The Mindy Project found life anew.

Through the streaming service, The Mindy Project lasted six seasons in total, with the final episode premiering in November 2017. That said, while Hulu initially followed suit with Fox's 20-something episode order, the last two seasons only contained 14 and 10 episodes apiece. For a show on the brink of cancellation, it's hard for fans to complain.

Community (Aired On NBC, Saved By Yahoo!)

Initially, #SixSeasonsAndAMovie started as a throwaway joke. But, in fitting Community fashion, this meta line became the hard-lucked show's rallying cry; it was their rousing plea to push forward — against the tide — to its predestined conclusion. Certainly, the self-aware/meta-narrative series faced several setbacks during its tenure, notably with cast members exiting the series before its conclusion, along with showrunner Dan Harmon being fired (then rehired) during his sitcom's rather unsteady mid-section.

Yet, Community kept moving forward; not even cancellation held the tongue-in-cheek sitcom back. When NBC pulled the plug after Season 5, Yahoo! lent their hand to the fledgling show to reach its long-promised sixth season. Admittedly, it wasn't a smooth transition (particularly with a wonky website), but Community ended movingly and, more importantly, on its own terms, providing a fond farewell to the struggling series. Currently, Community: The Movie remains a looming uncertainty, but don't cancel out the possibility.

Scrubs (Aired On NBC, Saved By ABC)

Throughout its uncertain run, Scrubs was the little medical dramedy series that could. Bill Lawrence's acclaimed show started out strong, earning warm reviews and healthy viewership during its first two seasons. But in the years that followed, Scrubs couldn't maintain that momentum. That said, the sitcom still retained its affectionate fanbase.

Because of that nimble loyalty from devoted viewers, Scrubs was kept on life support — often by a thread — throughout the uncertain seasons to come. By Season 7, however, NBC pulled the plug on the cult-favorite ensemble series. Thankfully, ABC was willing to keep it alive for another two seasons (even though Season 8's excellent conclusion was conceived as the series finale). In an effort to semi-reboot the show, Scrubs finally lost its loyal audience, resulting in the medical sitcom being canceled on March 17th, 2010.

Cougar Town (Aired On ABC, Saved By TBS)

Additionally, ABC's Cougar Town, Bill Lawrence's anticipated follow-up to his long-running (and similarly network-bouncing) Scrubs, had two homes during its tenure. Specifically, the Courteney Cox-starring series started with ABC and lasted for three seasons before its cancellation— due to decreasing viewership, though it didn't help that there was an extended delay between Seasons 2 and 3. Though the show started strong, it failed to keep a consistent audience, even though critics grew more receptive to the program as it found its footing in Season 2.

While there were several factors that resulted in Cougar Town's cancellation, including issues with its title, TBS was willing to pick up the middle-aged sitcom for an additional three seasons. Following suit with Season 3, which contained 15 episodes compared to Season 1's 24 and Season 2's 22, the Florida-based sitcom was never a smash, but it found more comfortable footing in its late-night cable slots, resulting in a looser, sillier second half. It concluded on March 31st, 2015 under a different name, Sunshine State.

Longmire (Aired On A&E, Saved By Netflix)

In 2012, on the eve of the show's celebrated second season, Longmire was hailed by A&E as the highest-rated original drama series on their network. It earned fond reviews and received a steady stream of viewers. Nevertheless, despite its consistent critical and commercial success, A&E opted to give their hit show the cold shoulder. In 2014, the station surprisingly cancelled the neo-western program after Season 3.

Of course, when your show draws in six million viewers on a regular basis — especially on a cable station — it doesn't die easily. Sure enough, Netflix swooped in and picked up the rejected show, continuing its run for three more seasons. Since it was now available on a streaming service, Longmire stopped airing in weekly installments. All 10 episodes would drop at once, with Longmire's sixth season premiering on November 17th, 2017.

The Killing (Aired On AMC, Saved By Netflix)

Based on the Danish series Forbrydelsen, The Killing premiered on AMC in April 2011, during the height of the station's golden era. Alas, while it was a critical favorite, the grizzled English-language adaptation never found the same commercial heights as its sister shows, including Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and The Walking Dead — though it premiered to strong ratings. Alas, after three seasons, AMC canceled the crime drama.

But that wasn't the end. Two months after AMC axed the series, Netflix announced that The Killing was, ironically, back from the dead. Specifically, the streamer renewed the once-lost show for a fourth — and ultimately final — season. These six episodes, which favored the TV-MA content that the AMC show originally couldn't get away with during its televised run, gave the once-dead series a proper conclusion on August 1st, 2014.

One Day At A Time (Started On Netflix, Saved By Pop TV)

Based on Norman Lear's 1975 series of the same name, Netflix's One Day at a Time was praised as an appealing throwback to a conversational style of television that has gone out of fashion, particularly in our streaming era. Reimagining the original show through a modern lens, with a Latino family at the forefront, the sitcom reboot became a critical favorite and quickly gained an affectionate following. Alas, despite a steady stream of praise throughout its three-season run, the streaming series failed to win over Netflix's lasting affections, resulting in the sitcom being canceled after 39 episodes.

Nevertheless, after searching for another streamer or station to renew the show, One Day at a Time was reborn at Pop TV, though this second life was ultimately short-lived. Only seven episodes were made when COVID-19 shut production down. Unfortunately, it didn't survive the pandemic. In November, Pop TV announced that the reboot was canceled again. The producers shopped it around, but they couldn't find a new home.

Designated Survivor (Aired On ABC, Saved By Netflix)

With its intriguing star-driven premise, notably with Kiefer Sutherland at the forefront, Designated Survivor was one of the buzziest freshman shows of the mid-'10s. Skipping the pilot stage and getting a straight to series order in 2015, it's easy to see why ABC was so confident in this political new program. Alas, despite strong reviews and a very popular premiere, Designated Survivor had trouble maintaining a consistent audience, resulting in the station canceling the show after Season 2. Nevertheless, Designated Survivor retained enough popularity that Netflix greenlit a shortened third season. While it's hard to know how Designated Survivor fared on this service, it wasn't meant to last. Due to complications with the actors' contracts, the show became re-canceled.

The Expanse (Aired On Syfy, Saved By Amazon Prime)

Based on the sci-fi novel series by James S. A. Corey, The Expanse is an acclaimed futuristic star vessel for Thomas Jane, along with an award-winning ensemble piece filled with well-rounded characters, impressive set pieces, and, yes, expansive narrative depths. The blockbuster series was celebrated from the jump, and it only continued to earn praise throughout its three-season run on Syfy. Alas, the station couldn't justify keeping the expensive series on their small network, resulting in its 2018 cancellation.

However, due to its online popularity, The Expanse was picked up for two more seasons through Amazon Prime. Season 5 finished in February, and the newest season is expected to premiere this year.

Randall Park, the star of movies like Always Be My Maybe, The Interview, and even Ant-Man and the Wasp, has been on a years-long roll as of late and continues to only build up more momentum with each passing project. And with his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Disney+ original Wandavision not too far down the road, Park's career only seems to be getting better all the time.

And while everyone remembers some of the Korean-American actor, comedian, and writer's biggest and most notable movies and TV shows like Fresh off the Boat, Aquaman, and Veep, Randall Park has a long list of appearances you may have forgotten; ones like Reno 911!, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Five-Year Engagement, and even an episode of ER. Here are just ten of those movies and TV shows…

Steve (Asian Jim) - The Office

Diehard fans of The Office who are probably currently going through their seventh re-watch will remember Randall Park's character, Steve, aka "Asian Jim" from the Season 9 episode "Andy's Ancestry," but we'll break it down just in case someone has forgotten or doesn't know. Basically, Steve was one of Jim and Pam's actor friends who came in to play one hell of a prank on Dwight that leaves him questioning reality. The 2012 episode was released just a couple of years before Park reached the next level of his career with his portrayal of Kim Jong-un in the controversial 2014 comedy The Interview, but the future star had already started to make his mark in movies and TV.

Mailman - Reno 911!

Nearly a decade before Randall Park made a one-off appearance on The Office, the up-and-coming comedian did what most people in his case did in the early 2000s — he showed up on the Comedy Central Cops parody Reno 911!. In the 2003 episode "Dangle's Moving Day," Park plays a terrified mailman who is being attacked by a pair of lunatics armed with paintball guns and an endless supply of pain for anyone and everyone who crosses their path. This is a blink and you'll miss it kind of role, but Park's over-the-top delivery as he's trying to escape the onslaught of paintballs is classic comedy.

Ming - The Five-Year Engagement

The 2012 romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement has two of the biggest movie stars of the era in Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, but the supporting cast in the story about a San Fransisco chef and PhD graduate putting off their marriage for years on end is equally as impressive. Most will remember Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, and Rhys Ifans, but Mindy Kaling, Kevin Hart, Kumail Nanjiani, and Randall Park, who appears as a graduate student by the name of Ming, all show up in before-they-were-famous roles. Ming is mostly seen doing crazy experiments. like the one in Tom's (Segel) birthday email to Violet (Blunt). In just a couple of years, Park would be a bonafide comedy star, like the rest of the supporting players here.

Himself - Wild 'N Out

Nick Cannon's long-running sketch comedy show and improvisational game show Wild 'n Out served as the launching pad for everyone from future Saturday Night Live players Pete Davidson and Mikey Day, Katt Williams, and even Kevin Hart. Another name that is often forgotten is Randall Park, who appeared on the show from 2005 to 2007. With so many episodes and future stars being featured over the years, it's easy to forget a few of them, especially considering Park was in the infancy of his career at the time of his appearances.

Doctor - Curb Your Enthusiasm

There are more awkward encounters on Curb Your Enthusiasm than pretty much any other show in the history of television, and Larry David's run-in with Randall Park's character (Doctor) in the Season 7, Episode 9 episode "The Table Read," is near the top of that list. After a hilarious misunderstanding about David's relationship with a young girl, Park's character calls the cops as the show's theme music kicks in. This brief appearance is probably overshadowed by the insane cast featured in the episode (it's essentially a Seinfeld reunion), but Park's facial expressions and demeanor as he thinks he's dealing with a pedophile is pure comedy.

Trainee Wong - Larry Crowne

The 2011 comedy Larry Crowne probably isn't anyone's favorite Tom Hanks movie, but it's certainly not the worst movie out there either. One thing most can agree on is the talent of the supporting cast, which included Rami Malek, Taraji P. Henson, Bryan Cranston, and even Randall Park, as Trainer Wong, Larry Crowne's (Hanks) coworker on the day he is fired for not having a college degree. It's a brief appearance and came a couple of years before Park hit it big, but it's saying something when his scene is featured in the opening moments of the film's trailer.

Dr. Colin Lee - The Mindy Project

Mindy Kaling's long-running comedy series The Mindy Project featured an insanely talented main cast, but the incredibly deep roster of recurring characters and actors is just as impressive. With Mark Duplass, Chloë Sevigny, Bill Hader, and Ellie Kemper all showing up from time to time, it should come as no surprise that some, like Randall Park, would get lost in the shuffle. Park appeared as Dr. Colin Lee, an ophthalmologist and Mindy's friend on three episodes between 2013 and 2014 (when the show was still on Fox).

Yong-Jo Pak - ER

Randall Park has played a doctor on multiple occasions, but he appeared on the other end of a medical drama very early on in his career on a 2004 episode of ER. Appearing only briefly as Yong-Jo Pak, Park plays the brother of a woman who attempts to hide her pregnancy until the baby is born, and even then bounces between shock and denial.

Brad - House

One year after popping up on ER, Randall Park appeared on House as a character by the name of Brad who was in serious need of medical attention after he attempted to perform an at-home circumcision on himself. That description and the sight of the blood on Brad's pants are enough to make this a memorable moment yet one that you want to forget at the same time.

Crime Boss (Voice) - Community

Fans of Community will probably remember Randall Park's appearance as himself in the final seasons of the cult comedy series, but he also appeared (or at least his voice) in the show's first season back in 2010. In the episode "Romantic Expressionism," Park's voice can be heard in fake science-fiction action flick Kickpuncher as a character by the name of Crime Boss. Not seeing Park in this role is most likely the reason it's often forgotten. But that's not all, Park also appeared in the Greendale Community College webisodes.

However, if you had never heard of those shows before, you might have not realized that by those descriptions alone, would you? That is precisely what makes series like these, and the historical Margaret Cho-led sitcom All American Girl, some of greatest modern representations of Asian people on television. While the characters’ culture identity is important to their role, the plot remains universally appealing and, in some cases, even serves as a refreshing and entertaining way for audiences of other cultures to see things from a different perspective.

The following are 12 memorable TV shows, from either the past or the present, that put people from all over the continent in the spotlight.

Fresh Off The Boat (2015-2020)

Loosely based on the memoir by celebrity chef Eddie Huang, Fresh Off The Boat chronicles the experiences of a Taiwanese-American family (led by Randall Park and Constance Wu as Louis and Jessica Huang) after moving from Washington D.C. into a predominantly white neighborhood in 1990s Orlando, Florida. Narrated by the author whose story inspired, this hit ABC sitcom has been referred to as an "Asian-American Wonder Years" for how it depicts the Huangs' cultural clashes in a raw and hilarious way.

Nikita (2010-2013)

After proving her worth as an action star in films like Mission: Impossible and Live Free or Die Hard, part-Vietnamese actress Maggie Q landed the lead role of this TV show inspired by Luc Besson's 1990 thriller La Femme Nikita. She plays the title character of a rogue assassin targeting the agency that made her a deadly threat in Nikita, which actually is the second English-language series based on the Golden Globe-nominated French film, adding yet another exciting chapter in ass-kicking women on television.

Quantico (2015-2018)

Speaking of ass-kicking women on television, Quantico stars Jamshedpur, India, native Priyanka Chopra as Alex Parrish, an FBI agent who looks back on her days at the titular training facility in order to identify who framed her for a tragic bombing in New York City. The ABC thriller is a mix of fun, sexy character-driven subplots wrapped up in one ongoing intriguingly dark mystery only made better by Chopra's star-making performance.

Into The Badlands (2015-2019)

His penchant for martial arts makes Daniel Wu, born in California to parents from Shanghai, the perfect choice to play Sunny, who fights to survive in a feudalist, dystopian world in which guns outlawed, making impeccable hand-to-hand skills like his a dire necessity. From creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the duo behind Smallville, Into the Badlands, which Wu also produces, is one of the finest AMC series made for the post-apocalyptic comic book-loving crowd, even though it does not even originate from a comic.

Warrior (2019-Present)

The origin of this Cinemax original is a story decades in the making, not just because it is set during the Tong Wars of San Francisco's Chinatown in the late 1800s, but because it is based on a treatment written by Bruce Lee (yes, that Bruce Lee). Half-Japanese actor and Fast and Furious 6 star Andrew Koji leads a predominantly Asian cast in the Emmy-nominated Warrior, which has all the engrossing fact-based drama and masterfully shot fight scenes of raw brutality to be a dream come true for the history buff who also loves kung-fu.

Elementary (2012-2019)

As for literature buffs, especially those who idolize the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, we have this modern day reinterpretation of the adventures of Sherlock Holmes, just not the one with Benedict Cumberbatch. In addition to placing the English-born Holmes (Trainspotting star Johhny Lee Miller) in 21st Century New York City, CBS's Elementary really changes things up by pairing the detective with a sharp Asian-American woman named Dr. Joan Watson, played wonderfully by Kill Bill star and Emmy nominee Lucy Liu.

The Mystery Files Of Shelby Woo (1996-1999)

Years before Dr. Joan Watson was investigating crimes in New York for grown-ups' entertainment, Shelby Woo was doing the same for children as one of Nickelodeon's first Asian-American heroines. Malaysian-born The Joy Luck Club star Irene Ng played the title character of The Mystery Files Of Shelby Woo, a fourth wall-breaking young lady with a knack for solving family-friendly mysteries for the police department while living with her grandfather (Academy Award-nominee Pat Morita, better known as The Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi) in Boston.

The Mindy Project (2012-2017)

Following her dual role as a writer and star on The Office, Mindy Kaling created, and cast herself as the lead of, the delightfully romantic sitcom The Mindy Project, which ran on Fox for three seasons before Hulu picked it up for an additional three after cancellation. The Emmy-nominated actress, born Vera Mindy Chokalingam to Indian parents in Boston, actually based much of her character, a New York City OB/GYN, off of her mother who had the same profession.

Andi Mack (2017-2019)

One of the most groundbreaking moments to come out of Disney Channel was the debut of Andi Mack, the story of a half-Asian teenager (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) whose life is turned upside down by the discovery that her older sister, Bex (Lilan Bowen) is really her mother. The series is a refreshing throwback to the classic Disney Channel era as a dramedy that sheds light on real social issues, as well as a much-needed look forward, as the network's first live action series led by an Asian-American family and featuring an openly gay character, played by Joshua Rush.

American Dragon: Jake Long (2005-2007)

Speaking of classic Disney Channel (well, nostalgic, at least), in 2005, the network launched this animated series about an Asian-American boy (voiced by Dante Basco - Rufio in Hook) with a caucasian father unaware of the fact that the rest of his family is part dragon. Aside from its fantasy elements, American Dragon: Jake Long was another series from the children's network that aimed to reflect the reality of growing up, with the young titular hero's transformative, reptilian abilities serving as an engaging metaphor for that concept.

Killing Eve (2018-Present)

From creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Killing Eve is about a bored MI5 security officer (Sandra Oh) whose dream-fulfilling assignment to track a dangerous assassin (Jodie Comer) takes an interesting turn when the adversaries gain a unique infatuation with each other. Oh won a Golden Globe for her performance in the title role of this highly acclaimed and thrilling black comedy, the second earned by the Korean-Canadian actress.

Kim’s Convenience (2016-Present)

Speaking of Korean-Canadians, such is the nationality of the family who are the main focus of this hidden sitcom gem that originates from the Great North. The title of Kim's Convenience, which is available on Netflix, refers to the one-stop shop ran by Appa Kim (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) with his wife (Jean Yoon), son (Simu Liu), and daughter (Andrea Bang).

Never Have I Ever (Netflix)

Mindy Kaling acts as creator and writer on Never Have I Ever, a Netflix original series. It follows Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) as she deals with a tragic loss, and typical teen angst, like parents, crushes, and having John McEnroe as a personal narrator. The series debuted in April 2020.

Never Have I Ever is a modern teen comedy with a very enjoyable and quirky main cast. Maitreyi Ramakrishnan gives Devi depth, sincerity, and humor as she and her friends tackle most of the things that modern teens struggle with, like coming to terms with sexuality, grief, how to make a great TikTok, and dealing with a nemesis that will likely become a love interest later down the line.

The Mindy Project (Hulu)

Mindy Kaling created and stars in The Mindy Project. She plays Mindy Lahiri, an OB/GYN who works at a private practice and deals with various romantic entanglements. The comedy aired for six seasons, first as a Fox series and then exclusively on Hulu.

The Mindy Project premiered in 2012, and it was her first TV leading project after appearing on The Office. The cast included Chris Messina, Ed Weeks, Ike Barinholtz, and Xosha Roquemore. The Mindy Project was a great launching pad for Kaling, who had already won viewers over from her role on The Office, but this series allowed her to add her own comedic style and tone.

Inside Out (Disney+)

Inside Out is a 2015 Pixar movie directed by Peter Docter. It follows the inner-workings of young Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) as she deals with the emotions of a major move. Joy (Amy Poehler) acts as the ringleader inside Riley’s mind and tries to keep everything operating as it’s supposed to, but Joy is finding it difficult to keep Riley happy and stop Sadness (Phyllis Smith) from taking over.

Kaling plays Disgust in Inside Out and really captures the general attitude and persona one would expect from Disgust personified. Inside Out is a Pixar movie, and the company rarely makes bad ones, so you can expect all the brilliant animation, unique and fun storytelling, and adorable, merchandise ready characters in this film.

The Office (Netflix)

The Office fans better watch the series on Netflix while it is still there. The Office focuses on the employees of the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. The cast includes Kaling, Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, and B.J Novak.

Kaling played Kelly Kapoor for most of The Office’s nine season run (from 2005-2013). She also performed the duties of writer, director, and executive producer on the series. With Mindy’s flare for comedy and love of pop culture, she was able to make Kelly one of the scene stealing characters with a great toxic romance with Ryan. Kelly is one of my favorite The Office characters because she’s just such an entertaining character to watch, which is all credited to Kaling’s comedy and acting skills.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia “The Gang Makes Paddy's Great Again” (Hulu)

Mindy Kaling appeared on the season 13 premiere as a character named Cindy who has now become a member of the gang. Dennis (Glenn Howerton) left the gang to take care of his child. With Cindy, the gang actually excels at their schemes, a new and unusual thing for them.

If you know the gang, then you know an ethnically diverse woman running the gang is totally out of character, and Mindy’s character Cindy feels completely out of place among these lovable trash people, and that’s kind of the point. Kaling doesn’t feel right on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia because her persona is way too normal and civilized for the gang.

Wreck-It Ralph (Disney+)

Two misfit arcade game characters, Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) and Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) form a bond and vow to help each other. Wreck-it Ralph is treated as a villain in his game, Fix-It Felix Jr., and Vanellope glitches, so she’s not allowed to race in her game, Sugar Rush. Wreck-It Ralph was released in 2012 and directed by Rich Moore.

Kaling only has a small role as Taffyta Muttonfudge, one of the racers of Sugar Rush who is quite skilled, but also very mean especially to Vanellope. She’s one of the best racers in Sugar Rush and the mean girl leader of the gang. Kaling creates a great antagonist with Taffyta.

Champions (Netflix)

Mindy Kaling created and had a recurring role on Champions. The series followed Vince (Anders Holm) as he has to learn to take care of his fifteen year old son Michael (Josie Totah). Fortune Feimster and Andy Favreau also star.

This series only ran for ten episodes before being swiftly cancelled by NBC. I always thought Kaling and Anders Holm had great on-screen chemistry when he played one of her boyfriends on The Mindy Project, so I was very excited to see them work together on Champions. Unfortunately, the series got cancelled before it found its rhythm. But for Kaling fans, Champions is a fun, quick watch.

Four Weddings and A Funeral (Hulu)

Based on the movie of the same name Four Wedding and a Funeral follows a group of college friends now in their thirties as they deal with their complicated relationship with each other, and various people in their lives. The main romance of Four Weddings and a Funeral revolves around Maya (Nathalie Emmanuel ) and Kash (Nikesh Patel) as they try to ignore their growing feelings for each other.

Mindy Kaling is great at creating romantic comedies, and this is no exception. Kash and Maya, and their whole group of friends are appealing characters that make you want them to figure it all out. Besides the characters and storyline, another big strength of Four Weddings and a Funeral is the music choices. It had a very good Season 1 soundtrack.

A Wrinkle in Time (Disney+)

In 2018, Ava DuVernay directed Disney’s latest adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time. The film follows Meg (Storm Reid), her brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe), and her friend Calvin (Levi Miller) as they travel through planets looking for her father played by Chris Pine.

Mindy Kaling plays Mrs. Who, who along with Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey) and Mrs. Whatsis (Reese Witherspoon) guide the three children on their quest. Mrs. Who is known for using random quotes to offer advice and give wisdom to people.

Late Night (Amazon Prime)

Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling star in Late Night.Kaling also wrote the screenplay to this film. The 2019 dramedy was directed by Nisha Ganatra and focuses on Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson), a late night host on the brink of losing her show, and Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling), the new writer. Both women work to prove themselves, Katherine to her audience and network ready to turn her off, and Molly to Katherine and an all male writer’s room.

Thompson and Kaling both give great performances as opposite personalities who need each other to grow, succeed, and find their way. Late Night is a funny, charming, and insightful movie about finding how to stay true to yourself while altering your voice to match a changing landscape.

Despicable Me (Netflix)

Despicable Me is an animated film starring Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, and Kristen Wiig. It was released in 2010 and directed by Pierre Coffin. The film follows super villain Gru (Steve Carell) as he adopts three girls (Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher).

Kaling has a blink and you might miss it appearance in the opening of Despicable Me. She voices Justin’s mom, a mother whose rambunctious son falls into an inflatable pyramid. This isn’t a major role for Mindy Kaling, but it’s just an overall great animated film if you feel like adding something else to your watchlist.

No Strings Attached (Hulu)

Remember 2011 when both No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits came out? The films basically follow the same premise: friends who decide just to have detached sex, only to fall for each other. No Strings Attached is the one directed by Ivan Reitman and stars Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher.

Mindy Kaling has a very small role as one of Natalie Portman’s character’s friends. Her best scene is alongside Greta Gerwig, Guy Branum, and Ashton Kutcher as they trick Kutcher’s character into being confused who he had sex with. The answer: no one.

It’s a great time to be a Mindy Kaling fan with plenty of options available on your favorite streaming site. With Never Have I Ever being so great, we can’t wait to see her future projects.

The Mindy Project has officially come to an end after its six-season run, and fans got to see the end of Mindy's rom com-esque story on the small screen. The season only just ended on Hulu, but leading lady Mindy Kaling has already weighed in on the possibility of a revival some day. The star/writer/executive producer had this to say about a potential reunion:

Mindy Kaling shared her thoughts on someday bringing the cast back together for a reunion (a la Will and Grace on NBC) in a chat with Vulture, and it's easy to understand why she thinks The Mindy Project really brought her character's story to a solid end. The series finale finally gave Mindy the success she's craved and deserved as she hit a big professional milestone and reunited with Danny, who finally came around and admitted that Mindy is truly capable of raising their son and running her own business without either side of her life suffering.

Given the ugly way Danny told Mindy that she couldn't pull both off back before Chris Messina made his exit as a regular, his admission had to feel pretty good for Mindy fans who have wanted to forgive the original leading man and see him back in Mindy's good graces before the end.

Fans are actually pretty lucky that The Mindy Project was able to build up to a finale after six seasons. Originally airing on Fox, the show was cancelled in 2015 after three seasons in primetime. Fortunately for Mindy Kaling and Co., Hulu picked up the series and commissioned a Season 4 of 26 episodes. The streaming platform gave a less generous order for Season 5, which ran for only 14 episodes. Season 6 was the shortest of all, with only ten episodes. Still, ten episodes was just the right amount of time to tie off loose ends leftover from the previous five years.

The final trailer pointed to pure chaos in the final season, but everything really came together by the end. Of course, the ending might not have felt right if Chris Messina hadn't been able to reprise his role as Danny. Only time will tell if there will ever be a revival to reunite the characters once more after the ending of the series finale.

Well, the 2017 television year is almost at a close, and, just like every year prior, there were a wide variety of shows that didn't make it out alive. In some cases news that these programs would be ending in 2017 had been announced ahead of time, but, more likely, the shows were either pulled from the schedule never to return or cut loose after whatever season they were on ended. Just because there are more TV shows than ever doesn't mean that all of those shows are extremely successful and capable of lasting until the end of time. (What show is, really, besides The Simpsons and 60 Minutes?) So, let's take a (long) look at everything that's been cancelled or ended as previously announced so far this year, shall we?

Sense8 (Netflix) - Cancelled in June, Ending in 2018

Easily one of the most controversial TV cancellations in 2017, Sense8's first fate-changing announcement pissed off just about everyone within the show's limited-but-steadfast fanbase. The globe-trotting sci-fi drama told a complex and intriguing tale of connection and acceptance that spoke to societal groups that don't often get main-character recognition on TV. And after almost a full month of fan backlash, Netflix announced that Sense8 would get the chance to deliver a proper sendoff with a two-hour "movie" finale to be aired in 2018. It's amazing what TV fans can do sometimes.

Blood Drive (Syfy) - Cancelled in September

One of the craziest shows on TV in 2017, this grindhouse throwback was well-received by fans, although it didn't gain the largest viewership during its single season. Syfy decided to cancel the series before its first season had finished airing, and creator James Roland announced the sad news on the night of the Season 1 finale.

@midnight (Comedy Central) - Ended in August

One of roughly 200,000 shows that Chris Hardwick has hosted in the past few years, @midnight was a game show where the results of the competition were less important than the joke-hemorrhaging hashtags that fans would frequently use after each airing. (Or the spoilers that Robert Kirkman would blurt out.) After 4 seasons, the comedian-filled series met its fate after Hardwick and Comedy Central mutually agreed to call it quits, with Episode 600 being its final one.

The Odd Couple (CBS) - Cancelled in May

Marking the seventh time Neil Simon's play was adapted for screens big or small, CBS' The Odd Couple is the most successful TV show that Matthew Perry has been a part of in his post-Friends career. But this sitcom didn't get either the critical attention or the viewership that Friends did even in its worst seasons, and CBS evicted the well-cast series after three seasons. Though not before keeping fans waiting with bated breath to get an official decision.

Regular Show (Cartoon Network) - Cancelled in 2016, Ended in January

One of the best buddy cartoons to ever get created -- yeah-yuh! -- Regular Show lasted for eight oddity-filled seasons, with Cartoon Network deciding last year to cancel the series, with the then-unaired Season 8 serving as its swan song. It was quite a space-faring way to cap the series off, too, with the super-sized finale ("A Regular Epic Final Battle") airing back in January, complete with Robert Englund reprising the role of Anti-Pops.

The Carmichael Show (NBC) - Cancelled In June

Co-created by and starring comedian Jerrod Carmichael, NBC's sitcom The Carmichael Show had quite an eventful run in its three seasons. The series often tackled societal issues in successful ways, and even though it was a hit with critics, there was obvious tension between Carmichael and some at NBC. Things came to a head whenever the network delayed a shooting-centered episode after the tragedies in Virginia and San Francisco in June 2017. The actor wasn't pleased, and it wasn't long before he announced he was exiting the show, with his contract being up. NBC cancelled the show soon after.

Doubt (CBS) - Cancelled in February

Following her controversial exit from Grey's Anatomy, actress Katherine Heigl first attempted a TV comeback with the short-lived NBC political drama State of Affairs, and then jumped to CBS for the legal crime drama Doubt. Unfortunately, the latter ran for only two episodes before getting yanked off the primetime schedule and being subsequently cancelled, making it the first big broadcast network axing of the year. CBS later running the remaining 11 episodes on Saturday nights, without much fanfare involved.

Girl Meets World (Disney Channel) - Cancelled in January

Fans of the Disney Channel original comedy Girl Meets World had their hearts broken when it was announced the channel would not be moving forward with a Season 4 order. A spinoff of the popular TGIF sitcom Boy Meets World, the Disney comedy was very good about mixing former cast members into the bunch, and it had quite a vocal fanbase. However, the ratings dipped across its three seasons, and despite the fervent efforts of its creative team to find Girl Meets World a new home, the Matthews family adventures are a thing of the past.

Orphan Black (BBC America) - Ended in August

One of the more unique and engaging sci-fi dramas of the modern age, Orphan Black got five seasons to tell its complex and clone-filled story, with star Tatiana Maslany gaining a massive fandom for her distinct portrayals of all the different seestras. And rather than getting to a point where the wheels were spinning empty yarns, BBC America and Space set up Season 5 to be the final batch of episodes, giving creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson the chance to cap things off in the best way possible, although it could have used more dance parties.

Downward Dog (ABC) - Cancelled in June

After her award-winning turn on FX's Fargo, actress Allison Tolman next flipped to a network half-hour comedy for ABC's sorta-summer series Downward Dog. But there wasn't much bluster behind its mid-May debut, and six episodes into its eight-episode run, ABC cancelled Downward Dog, which aired its last two episodes a few days later. (It was one of the rarer times where a significant section of back-to-back episodes' audience stops watching after the first one ends.) While reviews were on the "fine" side, the numbers were not on this show's side.

Bones (Fox) - Ended in March

For twelve mystery-driven seasons, Fox boasted one of the most successful primetime procedural dramas that wasn't created by Dick Wolf. And though ratings drooped in later years, Bones never lost steam with its more dedicated fanbase who never tired of watching Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz being cutesy together while solving bone-related crimes. Fox decided that Season 12 would be the final one, and that shortened batch of episodes culminated in a crazy finale that ended on a heartwarming note. And for what it's worth, Boreanaz is not interested in any future Bones reunions.

Halt and Catch Fire (AMC) - Ending

It's not easy to think about any TV shows that covered the same kind of storylines as Halt and Catch Fire, which centered on the boom of personal computers in the 1980s, as well as the early days of the World Wide Web. (Along with various forms of personal drama, of course.) Halt and Catch Fire only seemed to build upon its already solid acclaim from season to season, though low ratings eventually sealed its fate, with AMC's Season 4 renewal coming with the caveat that it was the final season. And it was arguably the most well-received season of the bunch, too.

24: Legacy (Fox) - Cancelled in June

One of the more highly anticipated TV spinoffs in recent years, Fox tried to revive its hugely successful action drama 24 without the presence of leading man Keifer Sutherland as Jack Bauer. The results were enjoyable, but 24: Legacy wasn't on par with the franchise's best years, and it only takes a cursory look at the ratings decline to figure out that viewers weren't so keen to find out how Corey Hawkins' Eric Carter and others saved the day. And, though it seemed like the series might live on in an altered format, Fox called it quits after one season.

Bates Motel (A&E) - Ended in April

While Bates Motel initially seemed like a strange idea for a series, since Norman Bates isn't your everyday primetime TV character, the drama was highly acclaimed during its five-season run. Because it wasn't exactly a story that necessarily stretched across a massive timeline, the creative team initially had a five-season plan for Bates Motel, which A&E was happy to comply with. And it was mutually decided that the deadly drama was good to end after Season 5.

The Strain (FX) - Ended in September

Based on the three novels co-authored by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, The Strain managed to stretch out the central tale of Humans vs. Strigoi for four blood-soaked seasons. That was a good sign of FX's faith in the horror drama, since viewership for The Strain fell off dramatically in its later seasons. But the channel did give the creative team the chance to end things with a purpose by announcing the show would end on Season 4.

Dr. Ken (ABC) - Cancelled in May

Dr. Ken may have not exactly been a ratings winner for ABC during its two seasons on the network, but it did bring in surprisingly decent and consistent numbers for a show that aired on the dreaded Friday night of the schedule. The Ken Jeong comedy, which focused on the former actual doctor mining that profession for laughs, had numbers that were just good enough for Fridays, that is, until May when ABC decided to cut the show loose. At least Dr. Ken was able to bring on Community creator Dan Harmon for an awesomely meta cameo in (what turned out to be) the series finale.

Son of Zorn (Fox) - Cancelled in May

Fox likely had high hopes for Son of Zorn, as it came from Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller and was the first show they produced after their success with the network's The Last Man on Earth. The half-live-action, half-animated comedy about a barbarian from a mythical land who moves to Orange County, California got great debut numbers, but lost viewers in droves afterwards. When the Season 1 finale drew only 1.5 million people, it was almost a given that the network would get out of the Zorn business, and Fox didn't waste much time doing exactly that.

Review (Comedy Central) - Ended in March

Shows that end after the third season are typically cut down in their prime by a cruel network, but in the case of Review, the decision to end with a truncated Season 3 came from the joint desire of creator/star/producer Andy Daly and Comedy Central. The show, which focused on a professional critic who reviewed real life experiences, was much loved by critics, but audiences never really found the show, with Season 2 numbers dipping to an average of 258,000 viewers.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Nickelodeon) - Ending in November

Everyone's favorite Ninja Turtles have been a TV staple since the 1980s, so it was no surprise when Nickelodeon brought them back with the CG animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series in 2012. What was a surprise was the announcement in March that the show would be ending with its fifth season, and that the network had already replaced the show with yet another version of the same story. The current Ninja Turtles series will wrap up with a slightly shortened Season 5 run this November, and fall of 2018 will see the debut of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Underground (WGN America) - Cancelled in May

Here's a case of simple bad timing leading to the cancellation of a series. While Underground had solid ratings and good buzz along with notable critical praise for its two seasons on WGN America, the show was dropped as part of a move in a different direction for the network. And, that move came along because WGN's parent company, Tribune Media, was bought by Sinclair Broadcast Group just weeks before the cancellation. According to Sinclair's CEO, the ratings for WGN's shows didn't justify what the network was spending on them, and so, Underground was cut loose.

Episodes (Showtime) - Ended in October

After four seasons of watching Matt LeBlanc play, well, Matt LeBlanc, in the send-up of Hollywood that was Episodes, Showtime and the creators of the comedy decided that their story was told. The series was praised by critics and netted 10 Emmy nominations during its time on the air, and also a Golden Globe win for Matt LeBlanc in 2012. Season 5 of Episodes debuted in August and the series wrapped its run in early October.

2 Broke Girls (CBS) - Cancelled in May

Most cancellations come down to either money or ratings, and in the case of the CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls, both factors seem to have been in play. By the time Season 6 came to an end in April, the ratings were nothing to write home about, with only 5.62 million viewers tuning in on average. Those numbers, coupled with the fact that CBS had to foot the bill for production on the show without seeing any of the syndication profits, probably led to the cancellation.

The O'Reilly Factor (Fox News) - Cancelled in April

After reports came out that host Bill O'Reilly had paid five women to keep quiet about allegations of sexual harassment, the ratings for The O'Reilly Factor went up by about 20 percent. But, then, O'Reilly went on vacation, and with the bigwigs at Fox likely really, really tired of all the allegations of sexual misconduct coming to light in recent months, they decided not to welcome the host back from his time off and gave Tucker Carlson his spot. O'Reilly's ousting brought an end to his time with the network, where he'd been a mainstay since 1996.

The Mindy Project (Hulu) - Ending in November

Following the end of The Office on NBC, star Mindy Kaling jumped to Fox for the silly-yet-still-emotional comedy The Mindy Project, which lasted three seasons before Fox cancelled it. Streaming service Hulu stepped in to save the day, and after three additional seasons of Mindy's complicated love-life and work-life, The Mindy Project is saying goodbye once again, this time for good. Hulu made the announcement whenever Season 6 was ordered, so Kaling and her creative team had ample time to figure out how Mindy's story will wrap up.

Black Sails (Starz) - Ended in April

Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island is one of the most beloved books of all time, and its timeless story got expanded in a big way for Black Sails, a swashbuckling drama that appeared to have a bottomless budget at Starz. After three seasons of high seas drama, Starz put in a renewal for Season 4 and simultaneously announced Black Sails would end after that batch of episodes. Bittersweet for the show's dedicated (if not enormous) fanbase, but at least its ending was pre-planned and intentional.

Salem (WGN America) - Cancelled in 2016, Ended in January

Back in 2014, WGN America decided to get into the scripted programming game in a rather unintuitive way, by ordering up the supernatural period horror Salem, centering on the notorious Salem Witch Trials that took place in the 1600s. While the first season was celebrated for bringing in the channel's biggest viewership ever at the time, WGN America chose to later cancel Salem in the middle of its third season, which finished airing back in January. For what it's worth, though, Salem actually outlasted all of WGN America's other original shows, such as Manhattan and two other shows on this very list.

Last Man Standing (ABC) - Cancelled in May

One of the most contentious cancellations of 2017 happened when ABC shocked millions of fans by dropping the axe on Last Man Standing, the post-Home Improvement sitcom from comedian Tim Allen. Last Man Standing was performing about as well as a comedy could in Friday night primetime, but ABC explained the decision by saying they were shifting away from Friday night comedies in the future. Still, fans protested the choice, calling it a political decision to hurt the conservative-leaning Allen. There was a small chance the comedy could have ended up on CMT, but apparently Last Man Standing was too pricey, and so its six-season run is all we've got.

Longmire (Netflix) - Ending in November

Along with Justified, Longmire will likely long be celebrated as one of TV's best neo-westerns, telling the story of Robert Taylor's archetypical Walt Longmire and all the ups and downs of life in Absaroka County. Longmire started off as an A&E series, where it lasted for three seasons before getting cancelled there, at which point Netflix earned a lot of thankful fans' praise when it picked up Longmire for new seasons. Unfortunately, that partnership will soon be coming to an end, as Netflix's Season 6 order was coupled with the news that it would be the show's last one with the streaming giant.

Workaholics (Comedy Central) - Ended in March

Back in 2011, it's likely that not a lot of people would have expected Workaholics' trio of weed-schmoking slackers to turn the show into one of cable's longest-running comedies in recent years. And Comedy Central likely would have wanted to keep it going for even longer, but creators Adam DeVine, Anders Holms, Blake Anderson and Kyle Newacheck actually came to the decision themselves that Season 7 would be the last. As such, they got to wrap things up in a way that both kept the status quo intact, and also kept things open-ended enough for a potential return in the future.

Dark Matter (Syfy) - Cancelled in September

In the past few years, Syfy has made a dedicated effort to return to the kind of science fiction programming that it was named for, and while the futuristic space drama's weekly audience was never the most impressive, its fanbase was as faithful as they come. But after three seasons, Dark Matter was cancelled by Syfy, and co-creator Joseph Mallozzi later revealed that one of the main reasons the show got cancelled is because it was an acquisition and not a proper Syfy original series, making it less financially lucrative for the network. There are hopes that someone else will head to space with a fourth season of Dark Matter, but it hasn't happened yet.

Survivor's Remorse (Starz) - Cancelled in October

Being executive produced by an NBA superstar (LeBron James, to be exact) almost certainly helped generate buzz for Survivor's Remorse when it debuted in 2014, but the dramedy never really caught on with fans the way some of Starz other recent offerings did. The show, which followed a recent NBA recruit and his family as they adjusted to the high-rolling lifestyle his professional athlete status now allowed for, only managed to get over a million viewers once across four seasons, and, in the end, that just wasn't enough for the network. The series was cancelled just a few days before the Season 4 finale aired.

Celebrity Name Game (Syndication) - Ended in February

Game shows aren't automatic winners like they once were, even when they have big names attached as host like Craig Ferguson. The former late night talk show host (who won consecutive Daytime Emmy Awards for best game show host for the first two seasons) helped guide two, two-person teams, each with a celebrity guest player, through the process of trying to guess the names of a variety of pop culture subjects like fictional characters and celebrity names. While fun, Celebrity Name Game didn't connect with viewers quite as well as FremantleMedia North America, which distributed the show internationally, had hoped and the show was cancelled during Season 3 last December.

The Vampire Diaries (The CW) - Ended in March

Seven seasons is a good, long run that those involved with any TV show would hope for, so when Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec announced that the supernatural drama would end after its eighth season at San Diego Comic-Con in 2016, few were totally surprised. The series had lost one of its main characters when star Nina Dobrev left the show a few seasons prior, and ratings were not as strong as they had been. Before the official announcement, there had been rumors that the end was nigh, but at least an agreement between the network and the show's creative team meant that fans were able to get a real ending to a show they helped support for so many years.

Chicago Justice (NBC) - Cancelled in May

Super producer Dick Wolf is well known for his dramatic police procedurals like the many-tiered Law & Order franchise, and when he branched out into shows about first responders in Chicago with Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med, it only made sense to keep the train rolling with Chicago Justice. Set, obviously, in the same world as the other Chicago shows (and Law & Order, for that matter), the series followed the team of investigators and lawyers behind the Special Prosecutions Bureau who sought to bring perpetrators of the city's most attention grabbing cases to justice. While not a ratings or critical failure, Season 1 of Chicago Justice was middling, at best, in both respects, so it does make some sense that NBC would want to cut ties with the show before things went from so-so to out right bad.

Imaginary Mary (ABC) - Cancelled in May

Imaginary Mary had quite a few good things working for it when it came together at ABC. It was co-created by former Just Shoot Me! writer/producer and Community producer David Guarascio, The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg and Feast (short film) writer/director Patrick Osborne. With obvious similarities to Drop Dead Fred, It starred Jenna Elfman as a woman reconnecting with her imaginary friend from childhood, Mary, as voiced by Rachel Dratch. But the final product was less than ideal, and ABC seemed to know it, delaying the project and slicing its episode order before its debut -- which was supposedly tied to animation issues -- and Imaginary Mary was cancelled after seven of its nine episodes aired.

Baby Daddy (Freeform) - Cancelled in May

As the longest-running comedy on Freeform, it seems that Baby Daddy was another casualty of changing network tides when the series was cancelled just a few days before the Season 6 finale. The half-hour, which focused on a young man who raises the baby left on his doorstep after a one night stand, began before the network rebranded from ABC Family to Freeform and also predated the current network president. There are rumors that the network was all but guaranteed to extend the sixth season by a few episodes, but suddenly decided not to when the college-set Black-ish spinoff became a possibility for Freeform, which led to the cancellation. At least creator Dan Berendsen knew the show was on the bubble, and was able to craft a Season 6 ender that wrapped up the story nicely.

Playing House (USA) - Cancelled in October

Created by co-stars Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair, the USA comedy Playing House was based in part on the duo's friendship, making their respective characters Maggie and Emma all the more natural onscreen as their lives are changed through raising Maggie's newborn baby together. Season 3, which even incorporated St. Clair's real-life breast cancer diagnosis into its story, saw the overall viewership continue dipping, and it was in October that Parham and St. Clair delivered a gracious video message to fans that USA had cancelled the expertly cast show.

Sleepy Hollow (Fox) - Cancelled in May

Well, here's a cancellation that was hardly a surprise. After a standout Season 1 that grabbed critics and viewers alike, each successive season of Sleepy Hollow became more frustrating for audiences and the ratings reflected that. When series star Nichole Beharie abandoned ship at the end of Season 3, it was a bit of a shock to see Sleepy Hollow renewed. The supernatural drama tried to rebuild itself with new cast members and a new setting for Season 4, but fans weren't happy to be without the core team that made the show so strong in the beginning. Add to that the fact that Fox shuttled the show to Friday nights, and it was almost a given that Season 5 would never happen.

The Mist (Spike) - Cancelled in September

Stephen King's name was everywhere in 2017, from IT's massive success to Netflix's pair of features to Mr. Mercedes to his actual book release. But not everything was hunky dory for King adaptations, and Spike's markedly different-from-the-novella horror drama The Mist was even less successful than The Dark Tower. The series, developed by famed Danish TV creator Christian Torpe, brought modern social issues to the monster-filled narrative, but without the kind of nuance necessary to keep audiences invested in seeing what happened next. Low ratings, coupled with a retooled view on scripted programming at Spike (soon to be Paramount Network), led to The Mist getting sent out into the foggy yonder after Season 1 was completed.

Frequency (The CW) - Cancelled in May

Some film-to-TV remakes do well, while others don't. Perhaps if the creative team behind Frequency could have been able to talk to someone in the future via ham radio, it would have known that recreating this emotional family drama wouldn't have resulted in a huge success for The CW. Starring Peyton List and Riley Smith as daughter and father detectives communicating across two different timelines, Frequency never managed to build up a very sizable audience across its 13-episode run, and it was cancelled a few months after Season 1 was completed. Thankfully, The CW did release an epilogue video sharing characters' fates, which is something more cancelled shows should get to do.

Samurai Jack (Cartoon Network) - Ended in May

Back in 2004, the beloved Cartoon Network series Samurai Jack came to a close without actually wrapping its storyline up, and fans seethed for 13 years before creator Genndy Tartakovsky was able to return and conclude the action--packed tale with a fifth season that struck a more adult chord than what some might have expected. Makes sense, considering the original fans were all 13 years older, and because the show actually got shifted to the Adult Swim programming block. While the revived storyline might not have pleased everyone, most fans thought the samurai saga's finale chapter was well worth the wait.

Turn: Washington's Spies (AMC) - Ended in August

Along with having one of the more awkward names of any prestige TV drama, Turn: Washington's Spies also provided viewers with one of the more in-depth quasi-fictional takes on the American Revolution ever to hit the small screen. And though the first season was a decent hit for AMC, the viewership took a relatively steep dive in Season 2 and beyond, which likely played into the network's decision to announce the show's end was coming after its fourth season. For what it's worth, Season 4 actually gave Turn: Washington's Spies a decent enough boost in its weekly viewership. Not enough to reverse the decision to end it, but still.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (CBS) - Ended in May

Well, it would seem the folks behind Criminal Minds might always have a much harder time launching a successful franchise of their property compared with those behind NCIS and CSI. Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders was the second spinoff to be cancelled for low ratings, with sister show Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior being cancelled in 2011 after one 13 episode season. Much like with that series, Beyond Borders was axed due to low ratings. In Season 2, the Gary Sinise starrer, which focused on an FBI team that helped Americans who get into big trouble abroad, only averaged 5 million weekly viewers and a 0.8 rating, and that was down 28 and 33 percent from Season 1. Those numbers were enough for CBS to say goodbye to the show just a few days before the Season 2 finale aired.

Emerald City (NBC) - Cancelled in May

Following the yellow brick road didn't turn out too well for NBC's modernized Wizard of Oz reboot, Emerald City. Even though the dark take on the story did have some fans when it debuted in January, not all of them stuck around for the entire 10-episode run. The premiere had an already-not-impressive viewership of 4.9 million, and by the time the show wrapped, numbers were down to 2.9 million, so the network decided to cut its losses.

The Blacklist Redemption (NBC) - Cancelled in May

The Blacklist has been a solid winner for NBC since it debuted in 2013, so it makes sense that the network would be interested in franchising the property with another installment. The Blacklist: Redemption, which hit the small screen early this year during the hiatus of its mothership series, didn't quite fulfill the promise, however, and the show was let go after its eight-episode freshman season. If nothing else, at least that meant actor Ryan Eggold could return to the flagship series.

Vice Principals (HBO) - Ending in November

In a very rare situation, when Danny McBride and Jody Hill were putting together Vice Principals, they decided that two seasons of comedic and sometimes tragic madness and mayhem would be all they'd need to tell the story of two high school vice principals vying for the top spot at the school. HBO was totally on board, and, in an effort to stay on track with their vision, both seasons were filmed back to back. You can expect the series finale to hit HBO on November 12.

The Catch (ABC) - Cancelled in May

Everyone knows by now that ShondaLand shows like Grey's Anatomy and Scandal tend to rule the airwaves, but The Catch wasn't so lucky. After a pretty solid Season 1, ratings began to fall off in Season 2, which tried to take the story in a different tonal direction. Eventually, the drama about ex-lovers involved in a messy game of fraud and deceit came to a close with its Season 2 finale.

Kingdom (Audience Network) - Cancelled in April

After debuting in 2014 to solid reviews and holding on to a dedicated group of viewers through two seasons, Kingdom was cancelled almost two months before its third season was set to premiere. The drama, which starred Frank Grillo, Nick Jonas and Jonathan Tucker, and focused on a retired MMA fighter training his sons to keep the family legacy going, finished the 10-episode run of Season 3 on August 2.

Grimm (NBC) - Ended in April

For five seasons Grimm was the little supernatural show that could on Friday nights for NBC. The series had a very committed fanbase, and when it was announced last year that the episode order for Season 6 would be cut down to 13 from 22, those fans began to panic. Sure enough, just a few months later it was announced that Season 6 would be the show's last go-round with crazy, fairy tale villains. Luckily for fans, Grimm was able to bring everything full circle in the finale.

Will (TNT) - Cancelled in September

Well, TNT tried to give us a very different view of William Shakespeare with its punk rock origin story Will, but it looks like the effort didn't really pay off. The 10-episode outing of Season 1, which began in July, barely made an impact on summer TV and the show was only able to average 697,000 total viewers, which simply wasn't good enough for the network to give Will a second shot.

Powerless (NBC) - Cancelled in May

Comic fans were super excited when it was announced that DC was planning a comedy about how its various heroes and villains impacted the lives of regular folk. But, when NBC debuted Powerless at mid-season early this year, the show was only able to garner middling viewership, and numbers from the premiere to the second episode dropped 19 percent. A little over two months into its freshman run, Powerless was pulled from the schedule and then quietly cancelled about a month later.

Conviction (ABC) - Cancelled in March

While networks are never excited to talk about failures, Conviction's cancellation is a study in extremes when it comes to such things. The legal drama hit ABC in October 2016 to basically abysmal numbers and continued dropping as the weeks went on. In December, ABC announced that it wouldn't be adding to the initial 13-episode order, which was hardly unexpected, and when the final installment aired the network proceeded to simply not say anything about it being cancelled at all. But, once it was announced that series stars Haley Atwell and Emily Kinney had signed on to new projects, it was pretty clear that Conviction had been sent to the big TV prison in the sky.

Rosewood (Fox) - Cancelled in May

Rosewood started off with a pretty solid audience when it hit Fox two seasons ago, and even though Season 1 viewership went from 7.5 million to 3.5 million, the show's rating in the key demo of 18 to 49-year-olds mostly stayed above 1.0, which gave the network enough confidence to order Season 2. Unfortunately, the second season never reached those heights, and Fox cut the crime procedural from its lineup less than two weeks after the season wrapped.

Switched At Birth (Freeform) - Ended in April

After four seasons of solid ratings and positive critical reception, along with surviving the rebranding of its network from ABC Family to Freeform, it was announced early last year that Switched at Birth would end its run after Season 5. The family drama about, you guessed it, two teen girls who realized they were switched at birth, had a massive 15 month hiatus, but at least it gave the people behind the series enough time to craft a finale that would satisfy fans.

Outsiders (WGN America) - Cancelled in April

Much like Underground, behind-the-scenes changes at WGN America are what mostly led to the network's decision to cancel its Kentucky mountain folk drama, Outsiders. The show was actually one of the network's top performers, but the leadership change at WGN America led to a desire to create more "diverse" programming, so the series was cut. They could have picked a better time to do it, as the cancellation dropped just before the season's final two episodes.

The Great Indoors (CBS) - Cancelled in May

Without his dual gigs on Talk Soup and Community, actor Joel McHale was rip for another network comedy, and it came in the form of CBS' The Great Indoors. For a CBS series centered on the divide between Boomers, Gen-Xers and Millennials, The Great Indoors could have been a lot worse. Especially when it comes to the ratings. The sitcom drew in audiences far more impressive than those for many of the other cancellations on this list, and there were no huge dips anywhere. But still, after keeping hopes on the line, CBS cancelled The Great Indoors after the one season.

Pretty Little Liars (Freeform) - Ended in June

After months of speculation, it was finally announced in August 2016 that Season 7 of Pretty Little Liars would be its last. The team behind the hit series about a group of teen girls involved in a twisty web of dangerous and ever-escalating lies had simply decided that the time was right to wrap things up. The show returned with the second half of Season 7 in April, and managed to pull out a major twist in the big series finale. And what's more, the drama is already getting another spinoff with The Perfectionists.

The Real O'Neals (ABC) - Cancelled in May

With Dan Savage as one of the creative minds behind the "teenager comes out to his family" comedy, The Real O'Neals got a lot of attention for telling a story about a gay teen within a Catholic family, and it helped that the show was well-written. But problems arose in Season 2 thanks to a mini-backlash over one episode's joke about bisexuals, as well as star Noah Galvin's controversially frank interview in which he openly criticized other gay actors and gay TV characters. Had Season 2's numbers ticked upward after such situations, it probably would have lasted longer. But two months after the finale, ABC cancelled The Real O'Neals.

Uncle Grandpa (Cartoon Network) - Ended in June

The completely bizarre misadventures of Uncle Grandpa offered some weird and wonderful stories involving pro wrestling, werewolves, robots, and magic ponies. And for Cartoon Network, the animated series was pretty dependable when it came to viewership numbers. But network execs decided to pull the plug on the show in a very strange manner, announcing a "renewal" for Seasons 4 and 5, but no actual episode orders. Instead, Uncle Grandpa's previously ordered pair of 52-episode seasons were split up so that it created four separate seasons of roughly 26 episodes. And that run ended back in June, although some of the shorts were still airing into July.

Training Day (CBS) - Cancelled in May

One of the few first-year cancellations to make a memorable mark on pop culture, Training Day was not a particularly memorable film-to-TV adaptation of Antoine Fuqua's still-engaging 2001 feature. But the (unfortunate) legacy of CBS' Training Day is that it was the last big TV role for actor Bill Paxton, who passed away just four episodes into the season. The network made it clear there were no plans to recast the role, and the show wasn't doing so well that changing the story would be the ideal move. Soon after its short midseason run had wrapped, CBS cancelled Training Day outright.

Reign (The CW) - Ended in June

While a historical drama about Mary, Queen of Scots wouldn't seem like the perfect show for The CW's youthful demographic, the Adelaide Kane-starring Reign lasted for four seasons alongside the vampires, demons and superheroes elsewhere on the network. (Not that it gave a strictly accurate portrayal of history or anything.) Reign's royalty drew in impressive enough audiences during the early part of its run, but the viewership had dropped considerably for Season 3. And so, in a move most unkind, The CW announced that the show was ending right around the time the Season 4 finale was being filmed. That's cold-blooded.

The Leftovers (HBO) - Ended in June

After Lost ended, Damon Lindelof could have gone the rest of his life without attempting another heady and mystery-driven drama lacking in clearcut answers. But instead, he and novelist Tom Perotta richly and craftily adapted the latter's novel about an apocalypse-adjacent drama full of interesting characters, and it gave HBO viewers one of TV's most magical and devastating series of all time. With star turns from Justin Theroux, Carrie Coon, Amy Brenneman and more, The Leftovers delivered a starkly different season with each passing year, and all involved had come to an agreement that three seasons was a proper-enough run. That finale will forever be burned into our memories, too.

American Crime (ABC) - Cancelled in May

Created by 12 Years a Slave screenwriter John Ridley, American Crime brought the anthology drama format to network television, and with a stellar stable of actors such as Regina King, Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton and more. But, despite a constant flow of critical hype and acclaim for each season, the viewership made sharp declines from season to season, which didn't give ABC a whole lot to be optimistic about by way of keeping the series going. And so, two weeks after its shortened third season, American Crime was cancelled.

Bloodline (Netflix) - Ended in May

With one of TV's most talented ensembles, Bloodline built itself up as a taut, secret-filled look at the unraveling of a tortured family. Perhaps unfortunately, the strength of Ben Mendelsohn's Season 1 performance couldn't be recaptured in full, and viewer feedback faltered. But months after giving Bloodline its Season 3 renewal, Netflix dealt the show and fans a double-blow by announcing it would be the last season, and that its episode order was being cut down. So the writers had ten episodes to finish delivering the rest of their five-season plan, and to say it felt rushed is to say that Kevin Rayburn made sorta bad decisions.

Making History (Fox) - Cancelled in May

Making History brought three things together that have been really popular in the last decade: Adam Pally, Leighton Meester, and time travel. It turns out, though, that particular combination isn't necessarily one that TV viewers were clamoring for. Not even with Lego Movie helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller executive-producing things. Also starring the also-enjoyable Yassir Lester, Making History did not earn historic numbers for Fox, and it also failed to win over critics, who mostly deemed it fine enough. It was cancelled along with several others in May.

Chelsea (Netflix) - Ending In December

After a vaguely successful first season and a more enjoyable retooled second season (which still isn't finished yet at the time of this writing), Chelsea is coming to an end on Netflix, though not because the streaming giant decided to cancel it. Chelsea Handler herself decided to stop the series at the end of this year, aiming to focus on more life-affirming projects. She will still keep working with Netflix on the other projects yet to come from her overall deal with the company, but don't expect anymore talk shows in the near future.

Fashion Police (E!) - Cancelled in October

Once a weekly staple on E!, the humorously judgmental Fashion Police was seemingly inseparable from its host and lead funnywoman Joan Rivers, but after her death in 2014, Fashion Police kept on trucking, albeit in a varying format. Perhaps it shouldn't have, though, as the unscripted series became a revolving door for entering and exiting hosts such as Kathy Griffin, Kelly Osborne, Margaret Cho and more. E! made the decision to cancel Fashion Police, with the consolation prize of a finale special partly devoted to Joan Rivers.

APB (Fox) - Cancelled in May

A future-tech police drama centered on a super-rich guy who also happened to always be the smartest man in the room, APB wasn't exactly getting too far outside the box with its core concept. But it was created by Burn Notice and The Gifted's Matt Nix, and it starred Weeds' Justin Kirk and Kingdom's Natalie Martinez, so there was easily a chance it could have been easygoing popcorn TV. It wasn't quite that, though, and viewers weren't quite interested in sticking with it through its twelve-episode season, with Fox cancelling it two weeks after its finale aired.

Gypsy (Netflix) - Cancelled in August

It was a pitch that sounded quite alluring on paper: a psychosexually motivated drama in which Naomi Watts plays a therapist embracing a dual personality, with Billy Crudup as her doe-eyed husband. It seemed like there could have been hints of Mulholland Drive in creator Lisa Rubin's first big TV show. Instead, Gypsy debuted a rather slow and tedious ten episodes for its first and only season, and the result was not something that immediately made audiences clamor for more. Rather, Netflix immediately called it quits with Gypsy, cancelling the drama less than 45 days after it debuted.

Girlboss (Netflix) - Cancelled in June

Based on #Girlboss, the similarly titled autobiography from self-made success Sophia Amoruso, Netflix's adaptation Girlboss came out of the gate without much fanfare involved, starring Britt Robertson as the similarly named Sophia Marlowe. Tracking the birth and growth of the online retailer Nasty Gal, Girlboss was not well-received on the whole, which is surprising, given creator (and former 30 Rock writer/producer) Kay Cannon's success writing the Pitch Perfect screenplays. Amoruso herself did not champion the changes made to her life story, and was fine with the cancellation that came just two months after Girlboss was released.

The Night Shift (NBC) - Cancelled in October

Medical dramas are as much of a TV staple as anything else, and NBC's The Night Shift made its mark by shifting its time setting to the overnight hours, when things aren't quite so ordinary. Viewers were always nicer to The Night Shift than critics were, and those viewers ended up drifting away from T.C. & Co. over the years, and the summer drama's lowered ratings likely played a role in The Night Shift getting cancelled after four seasons. At least there weren't any massive cliffhangers left dangling.

Major Crimes (TNT) - Ending Early 2018

A spinoff of the successful Kyra Sedgwick-starring drama The Closer, Major Crimes made it through five consistent seasons on the cable network before it was announced that Season 6 would be the crime drama's final season. The creator gave a pretty sizable social media explanation about what happened, basically saying that TNT decided the show wasn't worth all it took to keep going forward, as showcased in part by a dipping budget and a Halloween night premiere for the final season.

The Get Down (Netflix) - Cancelled in May

Co-created by musical filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, Netflix's soulful throwback drama The Get Down immediately raised eyebrows with its all-encompassing subject matter and its gigantic budget. That lengthy price tag, combined with a largely mild reaction from subscribers, worked together to keep the wildly imaginative and lushly crafted series limited to its two-part eleven-episode season. As one of Netflix's relatively few cancelled series, The Get Down has the chance to find a cult audience over the years, thanks to everything its massive budget provided for it.

Man Seeking Woman (FXX) - Cancelled in April

Even for huge fans of the surreally bizarre FXX comedy Man Seeking Woman, it has to still be strange to think that the show actually got to last for three whole seasons. Created by Simon Rich and based on a collection of short stories from the author, Man Seeking Woman presented warped and often super-literal examinations of modern romance and dating, pitting Jay Baruchel in the middle of some of the most bonkers TV episodes in each season's respective year. (That penis monster will never be forgotten.) And even though the show's ratings were consistent, they weren't very noteworthy, and FXX ended the show after Season 3.

Teen Wolf (MTV) - Ended in September

Similar to how Buffy the Vampire Slayer turned a comedic film into a fan favorite TV drama, MTV's Teen Wolf brought a major tonal shift to the Michael J. Fox film from 1985. Teen Wolf and its often-changing cast were consistently beloved on social media across each of its seasons, and there was much howling at the moon to be had whenever it was revealed that MTV was ending the show following its sixth season, which aired earlier this year with several former cast members returning to the fray.

Being Mary Jane (BET) - Cancelled In October, Ending with TV Movie

By and large a huge hit for BET, Being Mary Jane got four seasons to deliver the emotionally grounded drama anchored by actress Gabrielle Union, who starred as the struggle-facing news anchor Mary Jane Paul. While the show had viewers, there were some big shifts behind the scenes in the latter years that likely caused cancellation-minded heads to prevail at the network. BET cancelled Being Mary Jane, but offered up the olive branch of a TV movie finale set to air in 2018.

No Tomorrow (The CW) - Cancelled in May

There are so many dark and dreary apocalypse-minded TV shows and movies these days, and The CW tried to change up the pace with the romantic and comedic drama No Tomorrow, based on the Brazilian series How to Enjoy the End of the World. Starring Tori Anderson and Joshua Sasse, No Tomorrow was seen as a fun and airy show by critics, but audiences at large didn't put "tuning in" on their bucket lists, and The CW cancelled it in May. Cleverly enough, the storyline got a post-cancellation epilogue that capped things off.

Incorporated (USA) - Cancelled in February

Executive produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, Incorporated had a bit of a buzz going for it leading into its USA premiere last year. But the futuristic drama didn't manage to muster up that big of an audience for the government and bureaucracy stories that Incorporated was telling. Though the ten-episode first season actually kept up a pretty consistent viewership, with relatively few lows, it still wasn't enough to secure a second season, and USA cancelled it back in February, just over a month after the finale.

Girls (HBO) - Ended in April

If you were ever interested in reliving your messy, indecisive, sometimes independent, frequently broke and confusing twenties, then since 2012 the show to beat was HBO's Girls. The titular ladies at the center of the show were frequently hard to even like, much less love, but there was something fascinating, especially at the beginning, about watching them fail repeatedly. In January 2016, though, word came down that creator/star Lena Dunham and her team had met with HBO and convinced the network that ending after Season 6 was the best decision, which had been her wish all along.

Duck Dynasty (A&E) - Ended in March

One of the few cable reality shows to develop a marketing empire, A&E's Duck Dynasty brought superstar status to the bearded, Christian and duck-calling Robertson family in West Monroe, Louisiana. After debuting in 2012, it didn't take too long for Duck Dynasty to reach mass audiences, and its Season 4 premiere is one of the most-watched unscripted cable episodes of all time. The Robertson family's views and opinions often got them into trouble, though, and by the last couple of seasons, the viewership was back to Season 1 averages. But it was the family, and not A&E, that called it quits for Duck Dynasty.

Pure Genius (CBS) - Cancelled in May

Coming off of Parenthood, Jason Katims dove into the medical drama field for CBS' Pure Genius, which told the well-worn story of a bazillionaire, who wants to spend his money on good things like hospital technology, meeting up with a brilliant surgeon who wants to turn modern hospitals into the most efficient operations imaginable. All involved got to do their beneficial work for 13 episodes, and Pure Genius maintained a pretty solid audience and ratings throughout its non-lauded run. Yet, instead of giving the show an easy renewal, CBS had everyone waiting until May for the disappointing cancellation.

The Steve Harvey Show (Syndication) - Ended in May

Usually, when a talk show ends it's due to low ratings and it can take years for the host to get another show with their name on it. That is not the case with The Steve Harvey Show, as not only was it frequently among the top five daytime talk shows, but host Steve Harvey already has a new daytime talker in the works. It was suspected that Harvey would end his show when his contract was up with EndemolShine North America, which produced the program. The desire to plan another show similar to it likely stems from his proven ability to grab ratings, and his new deal with IMG and NBCUniversal, which will allow Harvey to film the show in Los Angeles near many of his other gigs, as opposed to filming in Chicago.

The Apprentice (NBC) - Cancelled In August

The new version of The Apprentice had an uphill battle from the very beginning, as longtime host Donald Trump departed in order to focus on his presidential campaign, and he obviously couldn't return to the hosting gig after being elected. Arnold Schwarzenegger stepped in to replace him as host, but audiences didn't respond to the revamped series. It was announced back in August that NBC had no plans to bring the series back for another cycle, celebrity-hosted or otherwise.

That's everything that's off the air or going off the air, but what about all the shows that still have yet to debut in 2017? Find out by using our fall TV premiere schedule.

The end is nigh for The Mindy Project, which has only one season left on Hulu before the series finale. There are some loose ends that will need to be tied off and some stories that will hopefully receive closure before the series concludes. It's too soon to guess at everything that will happen in the sixth and final season, but we now know one story that will likely get some degree of closure. Chris Messina will reprise his role as Danny Castellano.

Chris Messina was the leading man of The Mindy Project for its first three seasons, but he became less of a constant presence starting in Season 4, and he was downgraded from a series regular to a guest star for Season 5. His career took off in some non-Mindy directions, and Danny wasn't around as much as a result. Mindy Project executive producer and star Mindy Kaling announced at the TCA press tour (via TVLine) that Messina will be back for multiple episodes in Season 6. While she didn't go into detail about how much he'll appear in those multiple episodes, at least we know he won't just pop in for a quick cameo in the series finale.

Fans of the Danny/Mindy romance shouldn't get their hopes up for the two the rekindle their love story. Mindy Kaling has said that a "happily-ever-after" doesn't need to depend on romance, especially when her character has her career and her son in her life. There's also the point that Mindy is married to Ben and Danny is married to Sarah, so they're not exactly free for any more spontaneous airplane hookups. If they do get back together, there will almost certainly be some heartbreak in store for Ben and Sarah.

Given that Danny and Mindy are very different people at different places in their lives than when they were a couple, a romantic reunion might be a little bit too fairy-tale, even for a show about a woman with a lifelong obsession with romantic comedies. That said, they were played as the big couple of the series, and it wouldn't be too shocking if The Mindy Project decided to fudge the details and put them back together in the finale, a la Ross and Rachel of Friends fame (or infamy).

The return of Chris Messina as Danny wasn't the only news to come out of the TCA press tour. We also know that Julie Bowen of Modern Family has signed on as a guest star in Season 6. She'll appear as a "rival mother" in one of the very last episodes.

Congratulations are in order for Mindy Kaling. Apparently, the next big project for the star of The Mindy Project is going to be motherhood, as she is expecting her first child, so says a source close to the comedic actress and author. While the pregnancy news may be a shock for Kaling's fans, the news apparently surprised the 38-year-old actress as well.

The news came from "an insider," who spilled the beans to E!. However, the surprise factor was something the star herself once said would be a welcome situation. In a 2015 interview with Yahoo, Mindy Kaling opened up about having kids and said,

At that time, Mindy Kaling indicated she would be happy to have children "maybe imminently," and she explained further, saying,

Reportedly, Mindy Kaling's pregnancy will not affect the production schedule for her work projects. In fact, here she is in an Instagram photo she posted about a week ago to show her and the cast getting "back at it" on the set for the filming of the final season of the show she began in 2012:

In Mindy Kaling's 2015 book, Why Not Me?, the funny lady wrote about the prospect of having children, and she asked the rhetorical question,

So, what better time than the present to start a family? Yes, technically Mindy Kaling is extra busy these days. She stars in the upcoming Disney interpretation of the Madeleine L'Engle novel A Wrinkle in Time. Academy Award-winning director Ava Duvernay is heading up that project, which stars Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey in addition to Kaling.

Plus, Mindy Kaling is wrapping up the final installment of her sitcom on Hulu. But now that Kaling is going to be a mom, she might be able to approach her The Mindy Show character, who is also a mother, in a new way. The show has dealt with topics many parents face, such as considerations about breastfeeding in public.

Mindy Kaling has not confirmed the news of her pregnancy, and the father of the child is not clear at this time. Kaling previously was in a relationship with Benjamin Nugentfrom 2008 to 2012. Before then, Kaling and her The Office costar, B.J. Novak, dated from 2005 to 2007. We'll keep you posted with updates. For now, we wish Kaling all the best in her journey into parenthood.

Since 2005, actress Mindy Kaling has been as consistent a TV regular as Big Bird and Larry King, having jumped from The Office to The Mindy Project, which just aired its Season 5 finale last night. It looks like Kaling's extended run could be coming to an end soon, though, as Hulu has decided to end The Mindy Project. Thankfully, there's a silver lining here in the form of an accompanying renewal for Season 6, set to air later this year, so we aren't fully saying goodbye to Dr. Lahiri and her colleagues just yet.

While most TV networks make decisions about their shows futures at some point before finales air, Hulu doesn't fall into such patterns, and fans have been actively worried that The Mindy Project was indeed done for after last night. But it's clear that talks have been happening behind the scenes to figure out the best way for the romance-driven comedy to come to a satisfactory ending that fans can actually plan for, rather than speculating about. No episode count was announced by Hulu, and it's extremely hard to predict, considering the streaming service ordered a high-end 26 episodes for Season 4 and 16 for Season 5, though the latter was later reduced to 14.

Debuting in 2012, in the same primetime season that The Office ended on, The Mindy Project lasted three years on its original network Fox before getting cancelled over low ratings. Hulu, less interested in the advertising demographics that guide network TV, recognized that while Mindy Project's viewership wasn't massive, it was definitely loyal and vocal enough to earn another season; or another three seasons, as it were. It's unclear how well the show has done in its second home, considering streaming services aren't welcoming with their raw viewing data, but getting three seasons must mean something positive.

We might as well talk about what might happen in Season 6 now, so here's a *spoiler warning for anyone who hasn't yet watched the Season 5 finale of _The Mindy Project_. *

Last night's episode was one that doubled down, no, tripled down on the romantic storylines. Jeremy and Anna might have something going, as she appears to be beyond Tim. Colleen and Kim get engaged, though things get temporarily problematic when Morgan is made to vacate the apartment. The biggest of the stories, though, obviously involves Mindy and Ben. The latter intended to propose early on, but Mindy's ambivalent comments on marriage caused him to second-guess things. Thankfully, his daughter Lindsay revealed to Mindy his plans, and it all came down to an extremely cute moment when Mindy takes Lindsay and her brother Leo to Ben and then proposes to him. She still doesn't look completely convinced that this is the right decision, but at least she has another season to work through that choice.

With The Mindy Project now on a between-seasons hiatus, rather than a fate-unknown summer, we can start counting the days until we get to see Mindy, Ben, Morgan and the rest when the show returns to Hulu for one more year, with Season 6 set to kick off in September. Chris Messina has found his first television role following his departure as a regular from the small screen comedy The Mindy Project. The actor has been tapped to co-star alongside headliner Amy Adams in the highly anticipated HBO drama Sharp Objects, and the two will come together under difficult circumstances while trying to solve mysterious murders.

Sharp Objects centers on reporter Camille Preaker (Amy Adams), who is fresh off her stay at a psychiatric hospital and is assigned a murder investigation in her hometown. The victims, two preteen girls, strike an emotional chord with Camille, who may be getting too close to the situation. Chris Messina joins the series as Detective Richard Willis, and Deadline tells us Willis and Preaker put their heads together to solve the mystery as well as unearth some other personal feelings along the way. For Adams and Messina, it will be their first collaborative project together since they played a couple in Julie & Julia. Quite different subject matter in that one.

For Chris Messina, this will be his third stint on an HBO series. The actor was first cast on the network all the way back in 2005 when he played Ted Fairwell on Six Feet Under, and he later jumped back to HBO in 2012 when he played often frustrated ACN President Reese Lansing on Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom. Both characters, while they were given a fair amount of screentime, were not lead roles like Sharp Objects will be for Messina.

Of course, lead roles are not anything new for Chris Messina. The actor spent four seasons and change on The Mindy Project as the dutiful Danny, and has done a terrific job. With the series set to conclude next Tuesday on Hulu, he will make Sharp Objects his main small screen squeeze, but for how long?

Currently, Sharp Objects is set for 8 episodes, which would fall in line with the network's recent spark of limited series like Big Little Lies and The Young Pope. The series is based on the novel of the same name by Gone Girl writer Gillian Flynn. At the time the series was first announced, it was said Netflix was extremely interested in the project but lost out to HBO. There has been only one book for Sharp Objects, but limited source material has not stopped HBO from continuing to write for shows like The Leftovers, or even the more recent seasons of Game Of Thrones.

Amy Adams and Chris Messina sound like an awesome combination for HBO, who has has been pulling in more and more top tier talent with each successive series. No clues as to when Sharp Objects will come to HBO, but with the series currently being written, I think we can assume it will be a little bit longer before airtime. The Mindy Project faced some ups and downs during its early years on the airwaves, including a cancellation from Fox and a move to Hulu. One of the best changes to the original formula came when Adam Pally joined the cast in Season 2 as the absurdly bro-tastic gynecologist Peter Prentice. Against all odds, Peter and Mindy became very close friends, and the dynamic of the show changed entirely when Pally left the series in Season 3. Now, Pally has come out and explained why he moved on from The Mindy Project, sayng this:

Adam Pally was a pretty familiar face on the sitcom circuit by the time he left The Mindy Project. He spent three years on ABC as Max on Happy Endings, then moved right to Fox for The Mindy Project. Pally brought the laughs on a regular basis in both roles, but the five years of sitcom work evidently took a lot out of the actor. His reveal to The A.V. Club that he departed The Mindy Project to focus on indie movies makes a lot of sense, all things considered. I know I can't blame the guy for wanting a break from TV. Kudos to Mindy Kaling for giving him the leeway to pursue his interests rather than locking him into The Mindy Project.

Of course, Adam Pally did return to The Mindy Project a handful of times after leaving as a regular in 2015, and his guest spots were always fun for folks who were missing the antics of Peter Prentice. Unfortunately for any who were hoping that he'd be back on a more regular basis in any potential future seasons, Pally may be too busy on another show to drop by Hulu for Mindy in the near future. He is currently starring with Leighton Meester in the new Fox sitcom Making History, which will make its primetime debut on March 5.

In Making History, Pally plays a guy named Dan, who discovers a duffel bag that is actually a time machine. Dan uses the duffel time machine to travel back to the late 18th century, where he falls in love with Paul Revere's daughter. The series was originally ordered for a first season of 13 episodes, but scheduling issues forced Fox to cut the order down to nine. We'll have to wait and see how Pally fares with his nine-episode first season back on the small screen.

Streaming platforms have become bastions for shows that never quite made it on the air. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt found itself picked up by Netflix when traditional broadcast networks turned it down. Then there's The Mindy Project, which was saved by Hulu and picked up for a fourth season after its cancellation by FOX. In a rather bizarre turn of events, it now seems that The Mindy Project will once again make its way to network television in the form of reruns.

According to a brand new report from Variety, reruns of The Mindy Project will soon become available on VH1 and Freeform. While Hulu will remain the sole provider of first-run episodes of the series, the streaming platform recently struck a rather unorthodox syndication deal with the two broadcast networks that will bring the series back to traditional television. This marks a significant change for The Mindy Project; prior to this agreement, reruns of the series' previous three seasons were only available to stream on Hulu. The inking of this deal marks The Mindy Project's return to traditionally scheduled television.

With the fifth season of The Mindy Project on the way, this means that fans of the show will still have to go to Hulu in order to see brand new episodes. Under this syndication deal, VH1 and Freeform must wait one full year from a given episode's initial release date in order to air a rerun. This effectively bolsters the lineups for VH1 and Freeform, while still giving Hulu the exclusive ability to release new content for fans.

For those of you that have kept up with The Mindy Project since it made its transition to Hulu, the fifth season will be somewhat abbreviated compared to the fourth. The streaming platform will release the first seven episodes of the 14-episode season (compared to the 26-episode fourth season) on a weekly basis during the fall season, and the latter seven will be released in the same format during the spring after a winter hiatus.

It makes sense that a deal of this nature would eventually come together for a show like The Mindy Project. Despite the fact that FOX cancelled the show after three seasons on the air, it developed a very strong cult following with men and women alike. With The Office alum Mindy Kaling at the helm, the series found a new home on Hulu, and experienced a major resurgence in popularity. The show is more than worthy of the newfound adulation that it has received, so we're glad to see that it will once again make its way to the traditional small screen.

As we all get ready for the fifth season of The Mindy Project on Hulu, the show will be coming out of the gate swinging. Its first episode back will deal with the cliffhanger at the end of Season 4 between Mindy, Danny, and Jody, and now we've also gotten details of one very interesting future episode. The episode will see series lead Mindy (Mindy Kaling) transformed from an Indian woman into a white man. Don't worry, the show isn't whitewashing anyone; the change will only be for one crazy sounding episode.

TVLine has the details and they report that if Hulu okay's the episode (which I have to imagine they will) then the show will cast a Caucasian male actor to play the role of Mindy in an episode of Season 5. Mindy Kaling will still provide her voice over for the episode, making the whole thing extra funny. While at the Television Critics Association panel, Kaling revealed new details about the episode and how exactly they plan to tackle the high concept.

It definitely sounds like an episode of television that will get a lot of attention. As to how exactly Mindy will transform into an entirely different person on a show that is mostly a romantic comedy is a good question, though. Kaling's brief description of the episode makes it sound like Mindy will ACTUALLY become a white man, but it's far more likely that it's some sort of dream or fantasy situation. It's an outrageous concept with a real opportunity to explore important social issues.

Let's hope Hulu gives the green light for the episode. I don't think it's crazy to say that The Mindy Project isn't the most watched show on television, and an episode like this would give it a lot of much needed buzz. The show was axed by Fox after its third season on the network and then made the move over to Hulu. It hasn't made a lot of splashes since then so "If I Was Born a White Man" might just be what the show needs. Not to say that this is just a PR stunt; Mindy Kaling is a smart writer and there's a lot of relevant ground to be explored with that kind of concept.

The Mindy Project has gone through some major ups and downs over the years. The series first premiered on Fox in 2012, then moved to Hulu for Season 4 in 2015 after getting the axe from Fox. The transition from network to streaming involved some changes, but the romcom dynamic of Mindy and Danny was enough of a constant that The Mindy Project still felt like the same show, though it began to look very different when Danny spent less and less time on screen before his breakup with Mindy. Now, The Mindy Project will feature even less of Danny in Season 5 as actor Chris Messina has been downgraded from a regular to a recurring guest star.

The switch from regular to recurring is pretty huge for an actor who started out the series second-billed to the lead. Chris Messina will appear sporadically throughout Season 5 to maintain a relationship of sorts with Mindy, according to TVLine. Given that the beginning of Season 4 featured the birth of Mindy and Danny’s son Leo, the fact that Danny will still pop in from time to time at least means that his character won’t be destroyed by Messina’s absence. There’s no way short of Danny dying that he would actually abandon Leo, and Mindy fortunately really isn’t the sort of show that would go so far as to kill off the guy who had been the male lead for four years.

Of course, Danny has gone through some changes in Season 4 that have rendered him much less of a romantic hero than he was in earlier seasons. Although he was overjoyed with the birth of his son and so committed to Mindy that he moved past his marriage insecurities to propose to her, he wasn’t such a great guy after little Leo came home. He didn’t react well when Mindy refused to give up her career to become a stay-at-home mom, and the relationship that had become the cornerstone of the show became somewhat toxic. Personally, I loved Danny and Mindy together as much as anybody in the earlier days, but I wasn’t exactly heartbroken when they broke up in Season 4.

Danny’s reduced presence in Season 4 has been a result of Chris Messina landing a role in Ben Affleck’s big screen venture Live By Night, which affected his availability for Mindy. If Live By Night goes well for him, Messina will likely have plenty to do in the future without playing Danny Castellano.

Chris Messina being downgraded to recurring for Season 5 doesn’t mean that he’ll never be back in a more regular capacity in the future. Mindy and Danny may still have the shot at a romcom happily-ever-after. As long as Danny doesn’t die during the run of the show, we can always hope that his character will be handled in a way that is funny rather than frustrating.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to return to the TV realm. News broke over the weekend that the popular film actor and Don Jon director will be popping up in an episode of The Mindy Project after it makes its transition over to Hulu. Go ahead and add that to your list of reasons it's great news the series has earned a second life as part of the subscription streaming service.

It looks like Joseph Gordon-Levitt will provide some additional star power during the Season 4 premiere. The episode is going to get a little fantastical and explore multiple possibilities for lead character Mindy Lahiri’s life. It’s unlikely the show is going to get into complex thought processes like parallel universes or multiverses (like The Flash), but Buzzfeed reports that this charming storyline will feature a universe in which Mindy is married to a Bravo executive named Matt, who will conveniently be played by Gordon-Levitt. It’s supposed to be a nod to the movie Sliding Doors.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt rose to fame nearly two decades ago playing Tommy on 3rd Rock From The Sun. In the time since, he’s largely strayed from TV—unless you count appearances on late night programs including SNL--instead favoring movie roles as varied as (500) Days of Summer, Looper and Inception. I have no idea how he ended up taking a gig on The Mindy Project, but it may have had something to do with Kaling appearing on the actor’s crowdsourced web series HitRecord.

In the past, the show has managed to draw in a ton of big names. Shonda Rhimes got the acting bug and debuted that skill set on an episode of The Mindy Project. James Franco and Breaking Bad’s Anna Gunn also both appeared on the show, not to mention Bill Hader, Common, Kevin Smith and more. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is arguably a bigger star than everyone but maybe Franco, but even Franco has been known for taking other oddball TV gigs, which made his appearance on the sitcom less unusual.

It’s great that The Mindy Project is even able to beef up its guest-starring lineup. Just a few months ago, Fox announced that it had cancelled the series, which effectively seemed to be the end of the show. But the comedy smartly shopped around, and Hulu took the bait, picking up the series for a whopping 26 episodes—more than fans would have gotten if the show was on traditional television. Those episodes don’t have a premiere date, yet, but they are expected to hit the schedule sometime in 2015.

A lot of comedies and dramas headed into early graves over the last couple of weeks, but today we have great news regarding one of them. Just a little over a week after Fox announced the network had sadly cancelled Mindy Kaling’s comedy vehicle The Mindy Project, Hulu has come to the rescue, signing on for a ton of new episodes of the show.

This morning the subscription streaming company announced that not only will fans get more Mindy Project originals, they’ll get an awful lot of them. The new Hulu deal will see the streaming company sign on for a whopping 26 episodes during Season 4. As part of the new deal, fans will also get to stream past and future episodes of The Mindy Project exclusively on Hulu, which makes sense as NBC Universal, which owns The Mindy Project, had already struck a deal to make Hulu the exclusive home for past episodes of the comedy.

When The Mindy Project was cancelled by Fox, we learned that Hulu did have the potential to pick up the comedy, which follows OB-GYN Mindy Lahiri in the workplace as well as in her personal life. At the time, Hulu seemed to be looking into a two-season pickup for The Mindy Project, but now it looks as if that has gone by the wayside in favor of a super huge Season 4 order.

Details on the new episodes are scarce at this point, obviously, as the show was just cancelled a few days ago and the pickup at Hulu is a brand new concept. However, Hulu’s announcement indicates that the major players will be returning for Season 4, including Mindy Kaling, Chris Messina, Ed Weeks, Ike Barinholtz, Beth Grant and Xosha Roquemor. A premiere date is expected to be announced down the road.

The Mindy Project should be an ideal pickup for Hulu. The comedy series already has a built-in niche fanbase, and while fewer and fewer people were tuning in to watch the show live on Fox during Season 3, it’s reasonable to believe the comedy will still prove lucrative for Hulu. Binge-watching is a great incentive, and The Mindy Project is the perfect sort of show to induce the TV languor caused by bingewatching.

The Mindy Project isn’t the only 2014-2015 show to get the axe over the last couple of weeks. Shows of all ages were also culled from various networks, including the freshman series Forever, the Season 4 drama Revenge and veteran series CSI, which is getting the proper sendoff. Fox, the network that is often seemingly fueled by how many shows it cancels, is once again putting a target on its head by ending one of its most fan-favorite comedies. The network has officially pulled the plug on The Mindy Project after three critically acclaimed seasons. But there’s a small chance that we haven’t seen the last of Dr. Mindy Lahiri and her gang of misfit friends and coworkers.

Don’t go pulling out bags of celebratory sour straws just yet, but streaming service Hulu is in talks with the show’s production company Universal Television to take over the rights to the show. If they’re able to strike a deal, Hulu is reportedly set to give The Mindy Project two more full seasons, according to Variety, and maybe even more, taking us at least to Season 5.

The first three seasons of The Mindy Project already have a home at Hulu, where all 67 episodes are currently available to watch, and the company would know better than anyone else if this deal would be a feasible one. Given its locked-in advertising deals, Hulu doesn’t really have to worry about bringing in ratings like a network does, which is probably a good thing, considering the ratings haven’t exactly been wonderful over at Fox. Though it brought in well over 4.5 million viewers for its premiere in 2012, the live numbers never topped 4 million after that, and the last handful of Season 3 episodes were some of the worst-rated in the entire run.

Still, we have high hopes for Hulu now, which could follow in the footsteps of Netflix and Yahoo! in bringing canceled series – Arrested Development and Community, respectively – back to their diehard fanbases. And considering the company is also trying to bolster its upcoming scripted lineup with the Stephen King adaptation 11/22/63 (starring Mindy Project guest star James Franco) and a Myst adaptation, signing up an already established series would be a good move.

Regardless of how many people were watching, The Mindy Project was heading into some uncharted waters by the end of Season 3, as Mindy and her beau Danny were anticipating a child. And we didn’t even get to see the hell that a Mindy pregnancy would encompass come to fruition, so it would be a crime against humanity to force fans to miss out on that.

With this cancelation, Fox has most of their ducks in a row as far as its series’ futures go. They recently gave The Simpsons two more seasons, and they gave fellow Sunday night hit Last Man on Earth a Season 2. Mindy Project’s Tuesday night comedy partner New Girl was renewed in March for Season 5.

If The Mindy Project is gone forever, that means that comedic guest roles will see a 30% decrease in the 2015-2016 TV season. Bring it back, Hulu!

For a series like Game of Thrones, it’s impossible to assume an entire episode will go by without a scene offending someone. But that’s arguably not something expected from Fox’s The Mindy Project, a series with suggestiveness that is far more silly than salacious. A recent episode titled “I Slipped” involved some in-the-bedroom action between Mindy (Mindy Kaling) and boyfriend Danny (Chris Messina) where he “accidentally” sticks it in the wrong place, a plotline that has become the center of some conversations about sexual consent on television.

Sex on broadcast TV is pushing more boundaries than it ever has, relatively speaking, but anal sex hasn’t yet become the go-to craze, least of all the non-consensual kind. Mindy Kaling is upfront about the way she and her writers tackle taboo topics, but the public reaction was not at all how they envisioned this bit of button-pushing playing out. Here’s how she explained it to The New Yorker’s Emily Nussbaum at the New Yorker Festival earlier this month.

Having watched the episode, it definitely comes off to me as a slightly edgy topic (anal sex) handled in a slightly typical sitcom fashion (everything spirals out of control around that one topic). Right or wrong, some people will experiment with anything, be it anal sex in a committed relationship or throwing glass into a plastics only container. Kaling shared with HuffPost her thoughts on showing TV audiences this somewhat primal motivation.

As The Mindy Show continues to set its footing throughout the rest of Season 3, one can only wonder where this relationship will go next. I’m guessing Shonda Rhimes’ appearance didn't involve S&M threesomes for a completely different reason though.

Whether or not you believe it's Spring may depend on your weather situation right now, but for TV purposes, Spring has sprung and the networks are rolling out their pre-Summer programming, which for Fox, includes Chris Meloni in Surviving Jack, the return of Kitchen Nightmares and the arrival of new drama Gang Related and a new reality series called I Wanna Marry 'Harry', which sounds like a reincarnation of Joe Millionaire with a royal twist.

Also on the schedule, we have the return of The Mindy Project, the anticipated debut of 24: Live Another Day, and Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, Hotel Hell and Master Chef, not to mention the return of So You Think You Can Dance...

Among the newcomers is the mentioned I Wanna Marry "Harry," which premieres May 27 and will have "an average English bloke" given a royal makeover before he meets 12 single American women who are searching for Prince Charming.

So, is this Joe Millionaire all over again, where a bunch of women are tricked into thinking they're competing for Prince Harry's affections when it turns out he's just a regular guy? Seems similar enough, though Fox hasn't released any specifics beyond that, so we'll have to wait and see.

In the meantime, there's also a new unscripted series called Riot, which is executive produced by Steve Carell and puts celebrities and comedians in unpredictable song, dance and sketch challenges. "often while navigating the show's trademark one-of-a-kind set, tilted at a 22 degree angle."

And then there's Gang Related, which airs May 22 and stars Ramon Rodriguez as Ryan Lopez, a rising star in Los Angeles' elite Gang Task Force. Terry O'Quinn plays Sam Chapel, who leads the team. RZA plays Cassius Green, a longtime Task Force Member who teams up with Lopez to take on the city's most dangerous gangs, including a gang he swore an allegiance to as a boy.

Fox also dropped their season finale schedule into the announcement.

After going through the motions of highlighting everything that was good, bad, amazing, or generally confounding about the year that was 2013, we felt it was time to move on, to look ahead; to not only make note of things we want in the form of resolutions, but to set a course for the deserved to get their due course. So we’ve decided to highlight these perfect TV storms to let you know who’s on the cusp of making it big in 2014. Previous subjects includeHeléne Yorke and Hamish Linklater, and now were honoring The Mindy Project writer Tracey Wigfield, one of the funniest women writing in television today. If the world is just, this will be the year of the Wiggles (a nickname we just decided on for her right now).

If you haven't tuned in to the second season of The Mindy Project, you’re seriously missing out. And not just because of Chris Messina’s dance moves, Xosha Roquemore’s hilarious Tamra, or Ike Barinholtz’s endearing and dumb Morgan Tookers, but because the show is the current home of one of television’s greatest writing talents, Tracey Wigfield. And if you weren’t familiar with her prior to today (she won the Emmy alongside Tina Fey for writing the series finale episode of 30 Rock), it won't be long before hers is a staple on the scene. Because Wigfield is one of the brightest rising TV writing stars on television and we're totally obsessed with her talent. If the world is just, 2014 will see big things happen for her.

Seriously. Tracey Wigfield has written some of my favorite television episodes from the past few years. Which is impressive considering how huge the comedy playing field has become. Starting out as a writers’ assistant at 30 Rock, Wigfield eventually bumped up to staff writer and producer, honing her funny under the doesn't-get-any-better tutelage of Fey and Robert Carlock. Where lesser writers might struggle under the weight and pressure of being groomed by such impressive figures, Wigfield has managed to create a voice with a confident strength that’s wholly her own. And it’s translating into a win for her current homestead.

As a writer on Mindy, Wigfield has not only strengthened her own game, she’s written some of the series’ best episodes ever. Arguably elevating the show beyond its at-times uneven season one start and into the most-improved network comedy on TV. Working with fellow genius writer-slash-all-around-TV-boss-lady Mindy Kaling, Wigfield has proven herself to be just as capable as the seriously impressive women she works alongside. Probably because at the heart of Wigfield’s writing — no matter the outlandishness of the scenarios — is, well, heart. Emotional honesty even in comedic absurdity can be a hard trick to master, and can so easily be under-serviced, but Wigfield just fucking nails it: simple as that. She shines brightest at the convergence of the two, and, frankly, inspires the hell out of aspiring would-be TV writers (because cough cough, I would know). We're, quite simply, endlessly inspired by the work that carries her name: it's become a seal of quality, and one we approve of tremendously. Is there anything better than a goofy, honest, funny, strong boss lady writing the shit out of TV? The answer is hell to the no, for those of you who are slow on the rhetorical question tip. So here’s to you, Wigfield, and may 2014 bring you the best year of your writing career, and by association, our favorite year of watching.

Skyler White is heading to New York City to hang out with… Dr. Mindy Lahiri? That’s right you methheads, according to E!, Breaking Bad star Anna Gunn has prepared her first post-Heisenberg role and it is not at all what you were expecting, is it? Surely appearing as the idol of Mindy Kaling’s character on FOX’s The Mindy Project was one of the last moves you saw coming — admit it! But it’s another day, another guest star on the popular Tuesday comedy so why shouldn’t Skyler get in on the feel-good funny action? After all, if you were the wife of a meth empire kingpin, flogged with a continual stream of depressing, anxiety-inducing, batshit crazy shenanigans in Albuquerque, wouldn’t you want to tackle something at a slightly slower speed? Skyler deserves this! Good move, Skyler.

And Gunn also clearly deserves the positive attention (anything that isn’t Walter White showing up in your apartment — just off screen! — causing grief and horror in his wake). The Emmy-winning actress will play Dr. Lahiri's professional crush, a sleek and sophisticated doctor by the name of Sheila Hamilton. Set to appear in the series’ 13th episode, Dr. Lahiri’s admirations are apparently mutual, as “the Tory Burch of Manhattan OB/GYNs” (Lahiri’s words) seems to have eyes for Mindy as well.

Professionally, of course: it’s always important to keep things above board when the medical board is involved, natch. Still, it’s hard to imagine what could possibly keep Mindy from accepting an offer of employment from the hip doc, as Dr. Hamilton seems to be living Dr. Lahiri’s dream, what with her high-profile clientele of rich and famous pregnant New Yorkers. What sort of hijinks will ensue to ensure that this oh-you-fancy lady doctor doesn’t get pulled away from the likes of Dr. Danny Castellano (Chris Messina), Dr. Jeremy Reed (Ed Weeks), and newly-ensconced Dartmouth bro-doctor Peter Prentiss (Adam Pally)?

Regardless, Gunn’s appearance on the sitcom will surely bring a new audience to the show (What’s the over-under on fans of both Breaking Bad and The Mindy Project you think?) and a welcome respite for the actress, who previously told the Chicago Sun-Times that she would “like to do a comedy … It’s been quite a lot of heavy, intense drama for a long time.” Surely The Mindy Project’s ample use of Breaking Bad references (Mindy's now-ex boyfriend Jason (Ben Feldman) was an arts and culture writer with the distinction of being maybe the only writer on the planet to pen a negative review of the show) helped matters.

But Gunn is hardly the first guest star on the series — in fact the show has made booking familiar famous faces as its bread and butter. Outside of the aforementioned Feldman and Pall, James Franco got in on the guesting duties (when he wasn’t going to one of his 87 different college classes or whatever). As has Anders Holm, The Duplass Brothers, Rob McElhenney, Timothy Olyphant, and a million people from Saturday Night Live and Kaling’s original TV home, The Office. Now we just have to sit back and wait to see if we get some roof pizza or not.

One of the great things about James Franco is that you never really know what he's going to do next. Whether it's starring in feature film, recurring on a soap opera or getting roasted at Comedy Central, the actor seems up for just about anything. And that includes a guest spot in a network TV comedy, as Franco has signed on for a 2-episode arc in The Mindy Project.

The Fox comedy series stars Mindy Kaling as a gynecologist who's trying to juggle her chaotic personal life with her busy professional life. The series is set to return for its second season this fall, and when it does, James Franco will appear. Fox says Franco will appear in the Season 2 premiere on Tuesday, September 17 and then again in the second episode of the season, which airs Tuesday, September 24. With Mindy off on a volunteer mission in Haiti, Franco's character Dr. Paul Leotard steps in to fill her shoes. He's described as charismatic and popular. He's also a former professional fashion model who radically altered his career goals after accidentally walked off a runway at a fashion week and was saved by a pregnant woman. That sounds like a bizarre story and one we'll hopefully hear more about (or see in flashback, please!). Now Dr. Leotard is paying it forward, devoting himself to helping pregnant women.

I'm wondering if there will be any issues between Dr. Leotard and Mindy when she returns, especially considering he's mentioned as being popular. Perhaps she'll feel threatened by him if she comes back and find that her co-workers or her patients prefer him to her.

Franco's been keeping busy lately, with a host of projects in various stages of production including a voice role in The Little Prince and a part in Gia Coppola's Palo Alto. And of his previously or soon-to-be released films this year are Oz the Great and Powerful, This is the End and the upcoming Lovelace, in which he plays Hugh Hefner. And many of us remember him well for playing slacker Daniel Desario in Freaks and Geeks, a beloved but short-lived series in which he starred alongside Seth Rogen, with whom he's shared a number of credits since. We can now add The Mindy Project to that. Rogen appeared in the Fox comedy during its first season, playing the role of Sam in "The One that Got Away." Let's just hope Dr. Leotard doesn't fall out of any windows as Rogen's character did. Then again, considering his mentioned runway catastrophe, maybe another physical mishap will once again lead to inspiration.

Fox is the fourth of the five major networks to announce their Fall 2013 premiere schedule, and for the network that recently brought us American Idol, there's a lot of X Factor on the menu. Fortunately for those who aren't looking for more singing, there are some returning dramas and comedies, and some promising looking new programs joining the lineup later in September.

Fox's fall schedule begins September 11 with the returns of The X Factor and Masterchef. Things get a bit more scripted the following week when Bones returns, followed by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman's new drama Sleepy Hollow. And it looks like Fox is getting the jump on NBC and CBS in debuting the their new comedy line-up a week ahead of premiere week (Sept. 22), with a September 17 start-date for Dads, Brooklyn Nine-NIne, New Girl and The Mindy Project. In fact, Fox has almost nothing premiering during the week of September 22, excluding Masterchef Junior, which is set up on Friday, September 27, ahead of an encore episode of Sleepy Hollow.

It's interesting that Fox is pushing Almost Human off to November and giving Sleepy Hollow such an early start, mainly considering how suited Sleepy Hollow would be for a Halloween-season debut. Then again, the series likely stands to gain a bit more traction with an early start, which may be the intention. Comedy series Enlisted is also coming in late in the game, with a November 8 debut.

Yet to be added to the schedule and presumably joining the line-up during midseason are Rake, Surviving Jack, Us & Them and M. Night Shyamalan's Wayward Pines limited series.

Fox announced their 2013-2014 lineup this morning, along with the planned schedule, which sets up new comedies on Tuesday nights and adds a number of other new series to the schedule, along with the returning shows. Among the new series is J.J. Abrams' sci-fi cop series Almost Human, Seth MacFarlane's new live-action comedy Dads and new animated comedy Murder Police.

As you'll note in the schedule below, Raising Hope has been pushed off to late fall and may end up airing on Friday nights along with new comedy Enlisted. Of course, that situation could change, depending on how things go for Dads and the cop comedy starring Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Fox also found a place for the recently announced Junior Masterchef on Friday nights. And for Mondays, it's Sleepy Hollow, and eventually, the robot-cop drama Almost Human.

As always, the schedule is subject to change as fall approaches.

Sunday nights seem to be business as usual, with Fox's Animation Domination block remaining intact. Yet to be added to the schedule but ordered to series are Gang Related, Surviving Jack, Us & Them and Murder Police. Fox also has their first event series set to go for 2014. M. Night Shyamalan's Wayward Pines, a limited series based on Blake Crouch's Pines, which is described as a mind-bending thriller. As mentioned, that's on deck for next year, and hopefully it'll be one of numerous event series set for Fox.

We'll be sharing more information, photos and hopefully some videos for all of Fox's new projects soon enough, so keep an eye out for that.

The Following isn't the only Fox series to receive an early renewal. Freshman comedy The Mindy Project has also been given the thumbs up for a second season, as has Raising Hope and New Girl, which locks down the three Tuesday night comedies, and leaves room for a fourth, assuming Fox is still planning to continue airing two hours of comedies on Tuesday night (or some other night during the week).

Of the three comedies, Mindy Kaling's comedy The Mindy Project is the newest, having premiered on Fox last fall. After that, it's Liz Meriweather's New Girl, which is in its second season, and now renewed for a third. Finally, there's Greg Garcia's Raising Hope, the lone family comedy of the bunch, which is in its third season, and will be back for a fourth in the 2013-2014 season. Ben and Kate was the fourth comedy in the two-hour block, but it was previously cancelled.

The next new episodes of New Girl and The Mindy Project aren't scheduled to air until March 12 (next week). We'll be waiting a bit longer for Raising Hope to return. But on the bright side, the series will deliver two back-to-back episodes for its finale, which is scheduled to air Thursday, March 28 from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and there will be some guest stars in the episode. The news of renewals of New Girl, Raising Hope and The Mindy Project came along with word that The Following was going forward toward a second season.

Those who watch Girls and The Mindy Project will be getting a double-dose of Allison Williams this week. The actor who plays Marnie, one of the "girls" in Lena Dunham's HBO comedy, is set to appear in The Mindy Project this Tuesday. A new video has arrived, which gives us a look at Williams' character, and some behind-the-scenes peeks at the making of the episode.

TVLine shared the video below, which previews The Mindy Project's upcoming "Bunk Bed," the first of multiple episodes in which Allison Williams will appear, playing a love interest to Dr. Castellano (Chris Messina). She also has an eye patch, which plays a part in how her path crosses with the doctor, but doesn't manage to do much in making her any less gorgeous than she is.

In addition to snippets from the episode and filming it, star/creator Mindy Kaling, Chris Messina and Williams herself all share some thoughts on what's going on in the episode and how it's been working together on the comedy.

So it seems Williams' character and Castellano are going to hit it off. She clearly has her eye on him, anyway. That joke was weak, but unavoidable.

The Mindy Project's "Bunk Bed" episode airs Tuesday, January 15 at 9:30 p.m. ET. And in case you weren't aware, Girls returns for Season 2 on Sunday, January 13 at 9:00 p.m.

The last we saw of B.J. Novak on the small screen, his Office character Ryan looked ready to follow Mindy Kaling's Kelly Kapoor to the ends of the earth. While Kaling's departure from the NBC comedy freed her up for a starring role in her own show The Mindy Project, we haven't seen BJ Novak on TV since he left The Office. But come next year, he'll be making an appearance on The Mindy Project.

Novak may not have appeared on The Mindy Project yet, but he's served as a consulting producer for the series, which debuted earlier this fall and follows Kaling's character Mindy, a surgeon trying to balance her work with her social and romantic life. As her dating life plays a key part in the series, there's plenty of room for guest stars. The Office's Ed Helms has appeared more than once as a love interest to Mindy, and according to Vulture, B.J. Novak is on deck to do the same.

Vulture's source says Novak is going to guest star on The Mindy Project early next year, playing Jamie, a potential love interest and "a charming Latin professor who bonds with Mindy over their love of a dead language." Jamie will also reportedly have a friend named Lucy, who is set to be played by Eva Amurri (Californication), who's also known as Susan Sarandon's daughter.

As a fan of the ridiculous and epic Ryan/Kelly saga on The Office, hearing that Novak's going to be on The Mindy Project as a love interest to Mindy is great rules. But given the familiarity of the actors as an on-screen couple in another recently series, the odds that Jamie is "the one" seem slim. Then again, Kelly and Ryan didn't end up together on The Office (yet, anyway - there's still half a season to go before the series wraps up, so there's still technically a chance, whether or not they return to confirm it). Maybe they'll have better luck on Mindy. But from what Vulture says, Ryan will appear in two episodes, so probably not.

Things are going pretty well for Mindy Kaling's comedy The Mindy Project, with decent ratings and a full-season order to secure the comedy will be around, at least through a full first season. But it looks like we're going to see a few noticeable shifts among the cast in the show coming up, and a couple more guest appearances by Kaling's former Office co-stars.

First, the mentioned casting shake-ups. TVLine reports that Amanda Setton, who plays Shauna in the Fox comedy, is leaving the show due to "creative reasons." That's bad news for those who appreciated the character. And it looks like we'll see less of Anna Camp, who plays Mindy's best friend Gwen in the series. Camp (Pitch Perfect, True Blood) is moving from series regular to recurring in her role in the show, but on the bright side, this should free her up to do other things, while also still appearing in the comedy from time to time.

With one female character out and another role downsized, that leaves an opening for someone new. And from what TVLine reports, it sounds like that vacancy will be filled somewhat by a new character that's set to be introduced. Her name is Maggie and she's described as "a tomboyish college friend of Mindy's." We'll have to wait for casting news on that to see who will play the part.

Moving on to mini-Office reunions, Ed Helms is coming back! The Office star appeared in the pilot for The Mindy Project, and we'll see his character Dennis back in tonight's "Thanksgiving" episode.

And then we'll see Ellie Kemper guest starring in "Josh and Mindy's Christmas Party," which is scheduled to air December 11. Here's a look at Kemper looking surprised and maybe angry (seems like she's not alone, judging by the expressions on the people behind her).

Fox’s freshman comedies Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project have been greenlighted for full season orders. The network announced the news Monday, noting that six episodes have been added to Ben and Kate’s initial order and a whopping nine episodes have been added to The Mindy Project’s schedule to keep the programs on air through the spring.

Though Ben and Kate has earned decent reviews, and The Mindy Project has earned better reviews, the full-season pick-ups seem a little surprising. Neither show premiered to strong ratings, and last week, TV By The Numbers reported both comedies did only a little over 3 million viewers. That’s an ‘ouch’ that could be saved by a good 18-49 demographic rating, but neither show even reached a 2.0 rating in that target audience.

Fox Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly says the network is producing more episodes of both shows because they are the types of shows Fox wants to support.

So, basically, the network has already invested, and since Fox feels the shows are good enough to deserve bigger audiences, they are giving their Tuesday night darlings the chance to shine. Still, if both shows are losing out to the little-watched Raising Hope in total viewers, they have a long way to go to be hits for the network. If you are a fan of either show, tomorrow would be a good time to start tuning in regularly.

Ben and Kate airs on Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. ET and The Mindy Project airs on Tuesdays at 9:30 p.m. ET.

If there's a silver lining to Mindy Kaling's departure from The Office, it's that she left the NBC comedy to create and star in her own comedy series at Fox. The Mindy Project puts Kaling front and center as a thirty-something trying to juggle her hectic professional life as an OB/GYN with her fairly disastrous love life. The Project takes some of the more amusing aspects of Kelly Kapoor and puts them into a lead character with a bit more substance and direction.

We're introduced to Kaling's Mindy Lahiri as we see her life-long obsession with romantic comedies. Somehow, she managed to balance her Bridget Jones-like lifestyle with her medical studies, as she's a doctor in the present day, and one with a messy love life that includes a previous relationship with guest star Bill Hader and a date with another guest star (Ed Helms).

While Mindy's life is hectic at the start, she's determined to get it together and make better choices for herself. And that's where things start to get really interesting. At the start, it almost seemed like the series was aiming to make fun of women strapped with unrealistic romantic expectations and a lot of self-inflicted drama, but as we get to know her, Mindy is actually a likable character, and there's some evidence that beneath her impatience and blunt - sometimes politically incorrect - outlook on people, there's a decent person on a quest for self improvement.

Kaling is joined by a talented cast, which includes Anna Camp, who plays Mindy's best friend Gwen Grandy. Also starring is Chris Messina, who plays Danny, a know-it-all doctor who's often giving Mindy a hard time when he isn't stealing her patients. Ed Weeks plays Jeremy Reed, a fellow doctor and Mindy's sometimes-friend-with-benefits, who serves to complicate her outlook on love even further.

At first, the pilot seems to rely heavily on Kaling's ability to deliver a snappy line or play out a silly moment, but as the episode progresses, the character starts to become a bit more relatable. Mindy's far from perfect as a character, which is what makes her so much fun to watch. We've seen Kaling's potential, both as an actor and a writer in The Office. But in a supporting role, Kelly Kapoor's character development was somewhat limited, and probably stretched as far as it could possibly go over the course of the NBC comedy's run. The Mindy Project's Mindy isn't the same character, but it does seem like she'll be an opportunity for Kaling to branch out both as a writer and an actor. While Kaling is credited for writing or contributing to some of The Office's best episodes, I think we may have only just begun to see what she's capable of. The Mindy Project is looking like one of the best new comedies this season. It's funny, charming and it leaves itself open for lots of possibilities. It should fit in well among Fox's Tuesday night comedy block, particularly with New Girl and fellow newcomer Ben and Kate.

The Mindy Project premiers Tuesday, September 25 at 9:30 p.m. ET on Fox.

No one does a preview episode like Fox Entertainment Group. In the past year, Fox has rolled out early preview episodes for several shows, including New Girl, which went on to be a hit for the network. FX has also used the preview episode to promote programming, giving sophomore comedy Wilfred a leg up before its June 28th premiere last month. There’s no word on exactly how successful these preview episodes have been, but obviously they have been a boon to Fox-owned channels, because for the 2012-2013 Fox has a few more previews coming our way.

Fox previewed freshman drama New Girl to bring attention to the freshman sitcom last year. Taking a cue from that show’s success, the network will preview Ben and Kate, the new comedy following adult siblings as they raise the precocious little girl from We Bought A Zoo. Deadline is reporting the highly touted The Mindy Project, which will star Mindy Kaling, as well as will be written and directed by the actress, has also earned a preview episode.

The previews will be available via Video on Demand through certain cable providers, but will also be found via Fox TV’s site and other platforms including Facebook, Hulu, and Yahoo. Both Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project are set to air on Tuesday, September 25. However, the preview episodes will be available from August 27 to September 9, giving potential fans plenty of time to check out the shows ahead of time. Deciding what to watch during a new TV season can be really tough early on and preview episodes can go a long way to help fans determine what shows are worth sticking around for and which look like early cancellations. At least that’s what I think. Then again, I got suckered in to both Terre Nova and NYC 22 last year.

Joining Fox's Tuesday night comedy block this fall is The Mindy Project, a series that puts The Office star Mindy Kaling front and center in a half-hour show that looks like it'll pair nicely with returning comedy New Girl. The new poster for series features the star and creator surrounded by words that suggest she's on a mission of self improvement.

Kaling certainly looks good in blue, and it's a good thing as she's surrounded by it in this key art, which EW shared today. Set on the back (and partially-front) drop are words like "No more late nights" and "Be a better vegetarian," which go along with the theme of the series, which stars Kaling as an OB/GYN "navigating the tricky waters of both her personal and professional life" in an effort to become the perfect woman.

In addition to the words that enforce the theme of the comedy, it's worth noting that Kaling looks pretty fantastic, well accessorized and very happy. (I'm also loving the long hair). I'll miss her on The Office, but hopefully The Mindy Project will see the same kind of ratings success New Girl has. As the comedy follows the Zooey Deschanel-starring returning series, Mindy's getting a pretty good lead-in. We'll have to wait and see how she does.

Created by and starring Kaling, The Mindy Project has Kaling playing the title role, a doctor who's looking to get her life in order both professionally and personally. Below the cast photo, you'll find Fox's official synopsis for the series, which premieres this fall, and further down, the trailer that introduces us to Kaling's character Mindy.

In addition to giving us an introduction to Mindy, you may also catch guest stars Ed Helms and Bill Hader, both of whom appear to play people involved in Kaling's romantic life (one in the past tense, the other in the present-tense).

Much like New Girl, it looks like The Mindy Project focuses on a young woman who's humorously imperfect but looking to improve her life. As disappointing as it is to picture The Office without Kelly around offering pop-culture references and obsessing about her appearance or her love life, I'll be interested to see how Kaling does as the star of her own series. Hopefully The Mindy Project will see as much success as its potential big-sister-series New Girl.

Fox's 2012-2013 primetime schedule is up, and in addition to returning series The X Factor, Touch and New Girl, among others, the line-up also includes a handful of new series.
