There is a famous saying that claims, “Comedy is tragedy plus time,” and it appears that some artists like to put an extra emphasis on the more tragic element of that equation. Some of the all-time funniest movies and best TV sitcoms boast a plot that would normally be found in a serious drama if it were not for their more absurd or quirky tones. Hopefully, you have never felt too guilty for laughing at any of these darkly humorous classics of the big and small screen.

Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb (1964)

A film by Stanley Kubrick about a group of politicians and military personnel desperately struggling to find a solution to an imminent nuclear catastrophe sounds like an intense thriller. In truth, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, based on author Peter George's Red Alert, is a blistering, gut-busting satire, brilliantly led by Peter Sellers in three distinct roles.

Barry (2018–2023)

Just about the best thing starring former Saturday Night Live actor Bill Hader, which he also co-created with Alec Berg, is Barry, which follows a hitman struggling to put his past behind him when he takes up an interest in acting. The HBO series starts off as a clever comedy with effective moments of intense drama before slowly evolving into an intense drama with moments of clever comedy.

The Hangover (2009)

Most films set in Las Vegas, no matter the genre, fixate on the more glamorous aspects of the Entertainment Capital of the World, but not The Hangover. As seen through the eyes of three groomsmen (played by Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, and Zach Galifianakis) desperate to find the groom (played by Justin Bartha) after a bachelor party they can't remember, Todd Phillips' hilariously unhinged blockbuster boldly embraces the "sin" in Sin City.

Beef (2023)

Road rage is already nothing to joke about, but even an incident that small can evolve into a conflict of uproariously disastrous proportions. This is demonstrated brilliantly in Netflix's Emmy-winning A24-produced TV show, Beef, starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as two sides of a feud that slowly spirals out of control.

After Hours (1985)

Martin Scorsese is most definitely not a filmmaker who is commonly associated with comedy, but he has a few funny flicks on his resume, such as After Hours. The relatively overlooked '80s movie, in which an unassuming New Yorker (played by Griffin Dunne) becomes embroiled in a series of dangerous situations over the course of one night, actually does sound like an on-brand effort for the Goodfellas director based purely on its plot description.

BoJack Horseman (2014–2020)

BoJack Horseman is one of Netflix's darkest original series, depicting the life of a self-destructive, narcissistic, washed-up actor and the negative effect he has on the people he encounters. The series might not be as funny if it were not animated and the title character (voiced by Will Arnett) was not an anthropomorphic horse.

Evil Dead II (1987)

Even on a shoestring budget, writer and director Sam Raimi achieved "the ultimate experience in grueling terror" with the first installment of his Evil Dead movies. However, the second chapter, following Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) and his fight against possessive spirits, is one of cinema's most perfect blends of horror with comedy of a most nonsensically cartoonish degree.

Rick And Morty (2013–present)

The fate of the world, and even other worlds, often rests in the hands of the titular duo from Rick and Morty: an alcoholic scientist and his anxious teenage grandson. In fact, even some of the bizarre situations they find themselves in, while undeniably threatening, are pretty ridiculous, such as when an alien race challenged Earth to an intergalactic singing competition in one of the best Rick and Morty episodes, "Get Schwifty."

In Bruges (2008)

In Bruges stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two Irish hitmen who are forced to take a holiday in a mundane Belgian vacation spot after a job goes horribly wrong. Only a storyteller with a sense of humor as bleak as writer and director Martin McDonagh could construct such a witty romp out of an increasingly dark plot such as this.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia (2005-Present)

Perhaps the most definitive example of cringeworthy comedy on television is FX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The dim-witted gang of bar owners (played by Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito) often get themselves into situations that are certainly infantile, but also deeply hazardous.

Fargo (1996)

In retrospect, it's a good thing Joel and Ethan Coen's Oscar-winning satirization of midwestern culture, Fargo, is not based on fact, as they claimed, because audiences might feel guilty for laughing at a story of an insurance scheme gone violently awry. Creator Noah Hawley's spin-off series would honor that same tone by telling new, seasonal stories set in similar rural locations and with the same quirky tone.

Succession (2018–2023)

Sibling rivalry of even the most immature kind can last long into adulthood. Exhibit A: the Roy Family from HBO's Succession, a wealthy patriarch (played by Brian Cox) suffers a stroke that sparks a war over his corporate empire between his three youngest children.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

The life of a vampire, which involves committing murder to satisfy their insatiable bloodlust, is a horrifying concept. However, the beloved horror-comedy movie What We Do In the Shadows (which begat an equally hilarious spin-off series on FX) offers a documentary-style glimpse into that sort of existence that is somewhat relatable and even charmingly funny.

Only Murders In The Building (2021-Present)

A TV show about two elderly men and a young woman teaming up to produce a podcast documenting their investigations of mysterious deaths that occur in their New York apartment complex does not sound very funny. However, with Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez in the lead roles and scripts boasting a razor-sharp wit, Only Murders in the Building is a comical delight.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)

Anyone familiar with the work of Martin McDonagh should have been able to expect that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri would not hold back on its heartbreaking material. However, the story of a grieving mother (played by Frances McDormand) at odds with local law enforcement regarding her teenage daughter's unsolved murder, creates a light aura of false security early on with its bold use of humor.

Killing Eve (2018–2022)

Creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Killing Eve is a wildly acclaimed series chronicling the intense cat-and-mouse game between a spy (played by Sandra Oh) and a skilled assassin (played by Jodie Comer). The thriller is renowned for its unique blend of high-wire suspense with absurdism.

Death At A Funeral (2007)

In director Frank Oz's English comedy, Death at a Funeral, anything that could go wrong at a gathering for a deceased loved one does go wrong, and then some. Daniel (Matthew McFadyen) deals with issues that include the wrong body being delivered to his childhood home, a guest going berserk after unwittingly taking a hallucinogen, and a stranger (played by Peter Dinklage) appearing to reveal a secret about his father's past.

Shameless (2011–2021)

One of the best American TV shows based on a U.K. series is the hit Showtime original, Shameless. Developed by John Wells, the series follows the Gallaghers – a large family from Chicago facing extreme poverty and other various, debilitating struggles, with little to no help from their patriarch (played by William H. Macy).

The Menu (2022)

At first glance, The Menu seems like the kind of delicious food movie that fine dining enthusiasts could get a nice laugh out of. Indeed, director Mark Mylod's acclaimed hit starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult is funny, but Ralph Fiennes' Chef Slowik has something planned for his carefully selected guests that proves to be truly "to die for."

Weeds (2005-2012)

Mary Louise Parker received three Emmy nominations for her performance on creator Jenji Kohan's dramedy, Weeds, as a widowed suburban mother who relies on drug dealing to make ends meet. It is easy to understand why Vince Gilligan was accused of ripping off the Showtime original when he proposed the idea for Breaking Bad (which he revealed at the Paley Center for Media), but anyone would agree that this show is much funnier.

Beau Is Afraid (2023)

Save a few notably fanciful moments (especially at the end), Beau is Afraid is regarded as a relatively authentic representation of what it is like to live with anxiety. Writer and director Ari Aster – known for his more earnest A24 horror movies, Hereditary and Midsommar – achieves this feeling by exaggerating every inconvenience our eponymous hero (played by Joaquin Phoenix) faces to the most absurd degree.

Bad Monkey (2024-Present)

How do you make a complex murder mystery funny? Well, for one, Carl Hiaasen's 2013 novel that inspired the Apple TV+ original series, Bad Monkey, already boasted a satirical tone. However, Vince Vaughn's performance as the hero, sarcastic former detective Andrew Yancy, especially brings the humor to the surface.

Don't Look Up (2021)

Former SNL writer and Anchorman director Adam McKay started to gain newfound respect with his humorous approach to more earnest topics in Oscar-winning movies The Big Short and Vice. He would follow those with an even darker satire, Don't Look Up, in which two astronomers (played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) struggle to warn humanity about Earth's impending doom.

After Life (2019-2022)

Creator Ricky Gervais stars in the Netflix comedy series After Life as a man grieving his wife's death, but does nothing to make the process any easier for him. Tony goes as far as adopting an off-putting, devil-may-care attitude to push away anyone who offers solace or assistance.

The Death Of Stalin (2017)

Some of the best movies about politics offer a farcical take on even the darkest days in history. Case in point, Armando Iannucci's star-studded satire, The Death of Stalin, which is a hilarious and surprisingly accurate depiction of the aftermath of the notorious Soviet dictator's demise. Though some liberties are taken with the actual history.

Santa Clarita Diet (2017-2019)

Not every TV show about zombies needs to be as stone-cold serious as The Walking Dead, especially if you change the rules of reanimation, like in Santa Clarita Diet. The unfairly cancelled Netflix original series stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as married real estate agents forced to turn to murder when Barrymore's role mysteriously becomes a walking corpse who thrives on raw human flesh.

World's Greatest Dad (2009)

Robin Williams stars in writer and director Bobcat Goldthwait's pitch black comedy, World's Greatest Dad, as dissatisfied teacher Lance, who begins to attract overwhelming attention following the news that his teenage son, Kyle (Daryl Sabara), has taken his own life. However, in truth, the insufferably rude Kyle's death was an accident of embarrassing proportions, which Lance has covered up with a phony suicide note in order to take advantage of the subsequent fame.

Dead To Me (2019–2022)

The phrase "misery loves company" serves as the essential hook for creator Liz Feldman's darkly comic Netflix original TV show, Dead To Me. Christina Applegate stars as the recently widowed Jen Harding, who crosses paths with the also grieving Judy Hale (Linda Cardellini). What starts off as the friendly bond that each of them desperately needs son evolves into a complicated grouping that sparks trouble for both.

Burn After Reading (2008)

One of the Coen Brothers' most overlooked dark comedies is Burn After Reading, which imagines what happens when investigative intelligence crosses paths with a severe lack of intelligence. It follows a pair of gym employees (played by Frances McDormand and Brad Pitt) who find a disc holding classified information left by a retired CIA agent and attempt to profit from the discovery.

Search Party (2016-2022)

Search Party stars Alia Shawkat as a young woman who decides to take it upon herself to find her missing past acquaintance. Of course, bizarre hijinks ensue, causing it to evolve into a far crazier situation for her and her friends over time.

Better Off Dead (1985)

One of John Cusack's earliest romantic comedies boasts a premise that would be a challenge to get made in modern times. He stars in the coming-of-age film as a young man who repeatedly tries and fails to take his own life.

Sweetpea (2024)

Ella Purnell earns laughs and screams leading the Starz original series, Sweetpea, as a lonely young woman who adopts a penchant for murder.

Even though she is not the first person to assume the role of Scott Lang’s daughter, Cassie, I still believe Kathryn Newton’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as part of the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania cast, is a means for celebration. Her first foray into superhero movies is a really long time coming, as far as I am concerned, since she has already been proving herself to be one of the most talented actors of her generation time and time again for more than a decade. See what I mean for yourself by taking a look at this exploration of some of her most notable career highlights so far.

Alex - Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)

Just a year after making her feature film debut with Bad Teacher, Newton landed her first leading role in a movie, which was also served as the first step toward reaching her current status as one of the top horror Scream Queens of her time. The then-15-year-old actor is as charming as she is compelling in the Christopher Landon-penned fourth of installment of the Paranormal Activity movies as Alex — a teen suddenly plagued by unexplainable circumstances after a new family moves into her neighborhood.

Millie - Freaky (2020)

Newton would reunite with Landon (as both co-writer and director this time) for this fun, old school teen slasher comedy (and one of Blumhouse’s best movies yet) which also takes inspiration from Mary Rodgers’ seminal novel, Freaky Friday, in more ways than just the eponymous title. Freaky boasts one of the actor’s more complex and layered performances as of late, tasking her with playing both the young, innocent hero, Millie, and the vicious, homicidal antagonist, The Butcher, after magically switching bodies with the killer (Vince Vaughn).

Claire Novak - Supernatural (2014-2018)

Newton’s second major contribution to the horror genre was also one of her first major roles on a TV show and saw her give one of the most emotionally gripping portrayals of her career at the time. She joined the cast of Supernatural in the recurring role of Claire Novak, who became a hunter of paranormal activity herself after her father, Jimmy, became a human vessel for the brothers’ angelic ally, Castiel (Misha Collins), and — as she mentions in an EW interview — almost reprised the role on a spin-off called Wayward Sisters before the idea was scrapped.

Allie Pressman - The Society (2019)

Soon after her tenure as Claire on Supernatural ended, Newton returned to small-screen horror, but that of a whole different kind of tone, in creator Christopher Keyser’s short-lived Netflix TV show, The Society. She is heartbreaking as Allie Pressman — one of several teens who are suddenly forced to establish and maintain a community of their own when every other member of their small town mysteriously vanishes and a violent power struggle among the young survivors begins to emerge.

Julie - Blockers (2018)

A year before co-starring on The Society, Newton also shared the screen with co-star Gideon Adlon in a movie about unsupervised teens, but of a far more grounded and light-hearted variety, called Blockers. Newton is as charming as ever in this surprisingly funny and endearing coming-of-age comedy as one of three young women whose parents (Leslie Mann, John Cena, and Ike Barinholtz) discover that they have plans to lose their sexual innocence on prom night and set out to prevent their daughters from doing the deed.

Darlene Bell - Lady Bird (2017)

One of Newton’s first major departures from the horror genre into more grounded coming-of-age stories came when writer and director Greta Gerwig cast her as bespectacled Immaculate Heart of Mary student Darlene Bell in the Academy Award-nominated A24-produced sleeper hit, Lady Bird. Her otherwise brief appearances, opposite Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan in “the titular role” and Beanie Feldstein as Julie, still left an impact on the thought-provoking dramedy and, especially, on the trajectory of her career.

Angela - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)

Lady Bird was not the only acclaimed 2017 dramedy (that also happened to star Lucas Hedges) featuring a brief appearance by Newton, but her sole scene in writer and director Martin McDonagh’s bold and brutal satire, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, is of much greater importance. She is unforgettably fierce as Angela — the sister of Hedges’ character, Robbie, and daughter of Oscar winner Frances McDormand’s Mildred — in a flashback to the angry last conversation she had with her mother before she was found raped and murdered.

Ivy Burns - Ben Is Back (2018)

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri would not be the last time that Newton played Lucas Hedges’ sister in a powerful, acclaimed drama about crime and its fracturing effect on a family, with the release of writer and director Peter Hedges’ Ben is Back the following year. Oscar nominee Hedges plays the title role of a recovering teenage addict, Oscar winner Julia Roberts plays his mother, Holly, who struggles with how his troubled past continues to haunt him, and Newton gives an Oscar worthy performance as Ivy, who has her own challenges with the situation.

Abigail Carlson - Big Little Lies (2017-2019)

Newton would also share the screen with (and hold her own wonderfully) opposite multiple Oscar darlings when she was cast on HBO’s Big Little Lies — developer David E. Kelley’s adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s scandalous novel — as Abigail Carlson. Her scenes with Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon as her mother, Madeline McKenzie — such as when a clash over Madeline’s expectations of Abigail concludes with an admission of her past infidelity — easily qualify as some of the Emmy-winning series’ most powerful moments, thanks in part to Newton’s ever-believable approach to depicting modern teen angst.

Now, the world is seeing Newton take on her most ambitious challenge as an actor yet by starring in one of the most visually bizarre new Marvel movies, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, considering what challenges she has tackled in the past in the roles above, navigating the Quantum Realm as Cassie Lang should be a breeze.

Game of Thrones had become one of my favorite TV shows of all time for a reason when I began watching it way back when, as I’m sure a lot of other people think the same. 

While I think we can all collectively agree that the show tapered off in its last season, no one can deny the impact that it had on us as a society, and how one of the characters in particular grew to be one of the most popular and quotable characters on TV ever - Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage. 

Dinklage did grow in fame for his famous portrayal of the character, but believe it or not, he’s been in the business for some time. So, if you’re looking for some other movies that Dinklage has popped up in, or maybe even TV shows, here are the best Peter Dinklage movies and TV shows that are streaming right now. 

Game Of Thrones (2011-2019)

I mean, it’s why you’re here, isn’t it? Game of Thrones, based on the popular book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, follows several main characters who are all vying for one thing - the Iron Throne, and the ability to rule all of Westeros when its latest king dies. It’s a fight for the throne, and everyone is pawns within their own game. 

Peter Dinklage played Tyrion Lannister, as mentioned before, and I’m not joking when I do say this is one of the best roles he has ever had, for good reason. Tyrion is such a blessing in disguise. You'd never think that this man, at first, with his buffoonery and drunkenness, would have the best brains out of everyone, but he has become one of the most known Game of Thrones characters of all time for his strengths.

The Station Agent (2003)

Arguably where a lot of people first saw Peter Dinklage, The Station Agent is a heartwarming movie that stars Dinklage. When his only friend passes away, a young man decides to seclude himself from society and takes shelter in an abandoned train station. But even if he decides to live his life alone, that doesn't mean that other people won’t come in and influence him still. 

While this wasn’t the first time that I saw Peter Dinklage (we’ll get to that later), I can understand why this movie ended up becoming a hit for the actor’s career. He’s so great in it, from the very start to the very end, and his charisma with both Patricia Clarkson and Bobby Cannavale is perfect and really shows just how much a single friend can impact the life of someone.

Find Me Guilty (2006) 

Next up, we have Find Me Guilty, where Peter Dinklage co-stars. In this courtroom drama mixed in with comedy, Find Me Guilty is based on a true story, telling the tale of one of the longest Mafia trials in history, about the real-life Jacki DiNorscio, who was on trial for racketeering - alongside several others. However, this trial is like no other. 

Find Me Guilty is certainly not the most accurate courtroom drama, but it’s freaking funny as hell. Peter Dinklage portrays Ben Klandis, one of the defense attorneys who aids Jackie during his attempts to defend himself, and his interactions with him are the best. Vin Diesel as Jackie is some of the best casting and he and Dinklage really do make a great pair, creating hilarious moments that will make you laugh plenty.

Death At A Funeral (2010)

An American remake of the British movie of the same name, Death at a Funeral is a great comedy movie with an A-list ensemble that tells the story of a funeral getting turned upside down when secrets and lies are revealed, causing mayhem within a family and more trouble than anyone expected. 

Fun fact - Peter Dinklage was actually in the original British movie but as a completely different character, and I have to say, I enjoy him much more in the American version. His acting is put more at the forefront of the film, showing off his comedic timing even more so than the first movie. What’s even better is that Dinklage is cast as a villain in this role, something that, at the time, we didn’t really see him in do so often, and he really outdoes himself.

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008)

A fantasy movie that everyone should watch, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is the second entry in the Chronicles of Narnia series, based on the novel of the same name. It follows the same siblings from the original film and their return to Narnia, but this time, to fight and make sure that the true king, Prince Caspian, can get his title back, through magic, sword fights, and more. 

Peter Dinklage plays Trumpkin, a red dwarf who can be a bit of a jerk but has good intentions at heart, and Dinklage was the perfect casting for this role. Dinklage’s portrayal of Trumpkin is great because his character is like the perfect amount of good and bad. He’s not the best man but he’s not the worst, and that makes him a really compelling character, one that only someone like Dinklage could play. I always think the Chronicles of Narnia film series deserved more credit, and there's so much story and yet we only got three movies. If you haven’t seen it, you should watch it now.

Elf (2003)

Ah, Elf, one of my personal favorite Christmas movies. In this classic film directed by Jon Favreau, Elf follows Buddy, a human who climbed into Santa’s sack years ago and was raised in the North Pole. But when he’s told he’s not actually an elf himself, he goes on a journey to New York City to find his true past, and his true father. 

Now, this was the first time I ever saw Peter Dinklage, as the children’s author Miles Finch who throws a fit at Buddy when he calls him an elf. I mean, come on. How can you not laugh at that scene? While Peter Dinklage was only in the movie for a short amount of time, his impact was huge. Who could forget the moment he climbed onto the table and basically threw down on Buddy, who (played by Will Ferrell) is a literal giant compared to him? It’s just so funny.

My Dinner With Herve (2018)

The only other TV project that I put on here is this TV movie, because genuinely, I think it’s again one of Dinklage’s best. My Dinner with Herve is a drama film that looks at the life of Herve Villechaize, who was the star of the popular fantasy show, Fantasy Island, and his interactions with a journalist sent to interview him for work. 

While this was a TV film, I feel like this could have been shown on the big screen and Peter Dinklage could have been nominated for so many awards for this performance. While there are moments that drag on a bit, Dinklage’s performance as Herve is outstanding and compelling in so many ways and one that everyone should watch if they are a fan of him. Even his co-star, Jamie Dornan, gave an amazing performance as well, and their chemistry while on screen was some of the best I’ve seen in a TV film.

I Care A Lot (2020)

One of my favorite movies of 2020, I Care A Lot stars Rosamund Pike as a woman who has found a loophole in life - she gets assigned as a court-appointed guardian for older people, and uses that to her advantage, stealing all their money. However, her ruse starts to become exposed not that long after, putting her life, as well as everyone else’s, in danger. 

If you wanted Peter Dinklage in another fun villain role, this is the one, where he plays Roman Lunyov, and it’s another case of where he is just so fantastic in his portrayal. To be honest, you’d never expect this scary gangster that Marla (Rosamund Pike’s character) gets herself tangled with to be Dinklage of all people, but he sells it well and creates a hell of a bad time for her character. Their rivalry is fantastic and the main reason I love to re-watch this movie. Definitely one of the best dark comedies in a long time.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014)

The first superhero movie on this list, X-Men: Days of Future Past is another entry into the X-Men series, this time we follow Wolverine as he is sent to the past in order to change it so a future event - which could cause the death of humanity and mutants - doesn’t occur.

Dinklage plays Dr. Bolivar Trask, another classic villain, except I feel that Dinklage gives a lot more heart to this X-Men villain, more than what any other actor could do. While some of the X-Men movies are hit or miss, in my opinion, I think this is one of the better ones because not only does it have a great cast, but the villain feels a little more grounded and not out of this world, and that’s thanks to the great acting from Dinklage and his portrayal of Dr. Bolivar Trask.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

The second superhero movie, Peter Dinklage actually had a decently big role in Avengers: Infinity War back in 2018. If you, for some reason, haven’t heard of the premise of this huge movie, Avengers: Infinity War is the first part in a two-part epic finale of the fight against Thanos, the Avenger’s biggest threat, and his plan to wipe out half the universe. 

Dinklage portrayed Eitri, who was the King of the Dwarves of Nidavellir (from Thor’s world, basically), and had the ability to craft Thor a new weapon after his previous one, Mjollnir, was destroyed. While his role in the movie wasn’t super long, it was extremely important and his interactions with Thor were not only funny but impactful. I really wish that he was seen more in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I wouldn’t mind if he popped up in Thor: Love and Thunder somewhere, but that might just be me wishing for that.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (2017)

Last but not least, we have Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. This Academy Award winning film tells the story of a mother who would do anything to try and find justice for her daughter, who was raped and killed a few months prior. So, she rents out three billboards, just on the edge of her town, in order to get the police’s attention and see if they can find more on what happened. 

Something I really like about Dinklage’s role as James in this movie is while it is short, he has some of the most memorable moments alongside Francis McDormand’s character. I also loved that James was almost like this light in the darkness, because while this is a very serious situation they are in, he tries to make humorous jokes to try and make Mildred (McDormand’s character) smile. And as someone who has relied on friends like that in my darkest times, I can appreciate the heck out of that.

I think few would disagree that Frances McDormand is one of our greatest living actors. I also am inclined to believe that that same few have likely never seen a movie starring the acclaimed 63-year-old (who is also married to Joel Coen) and had no interest in seeing Nomadland until after it won Best Picture at the 2021 Oscars. After a flu suspected of being linked to dogs spreads throughout Japan, all dogs in the country are banished to an island of garbage where one boy ventures out to find his beloved pet.

Frances McDormand’s third collaboration with Wes Anderson, The French Dispatch, was meant to come out in 2020 before the pandemic caused a delay to its debut. Yet, it is now one of the most anticipated 2021 new movie releases, if we are looking on the bright side. Hopefully, we can expect to add this next quirky period piece to our list of the best Frances McDormand movies once our binge of the favorites above is complete.

The year 2017 was an amazing one for the film industry, and the Academy Awards celebration absolutely reflected that. While Guillermo del Toro's The Shape Of Water walked away the big winner - taking home prizes for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Score, and Best Production Design - there was a whole lot of love spread around. Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri was huge in the acting categories, with both Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell taking home trophies, and both Darkest Hour and I, Tonya received recognition thanks to the prizes given to Gary Oldman and Allison Janney. On opposite sides of the spectrum, Jordan Peele won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his directorial debut, Get Out, while Roger Deakins broke a 13-nomination-long losing streak with a Blade Runner 2049 win in the Best Cinematography category. Best Supporting Actor is always one of the funnest categories at the Academy Awards. It's where the greatest unsung character actors finally get the recognition they deserve, and it's always a delight to revisit the fantastic performances through the collection of nominees. This year was no exception, as Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe, Christopher Plummer, and Richard Jenkins all put on spectacular turns in 2017 - but it was Sam Rockwell who walked away with the Oscar, and it's impressively well-deserved after 29 years of brilliant work.

Facing stiff competition, Sam Rockwell triumphed this evening thanks to his amazing work in Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, playing a somewhat controversial role. In the movie, the actor plays Dixon: a lazy, dumb, ignorant cop with a racist past who undergoes some serious change while dealing with Frances McDormand's Mildred Pierce - a mother who wants justice for her raped and murdered daughter. Rockwell is given a tremendous arc to play out in the film, one that you never expect from where the role starts, but it's honestly amazing to see him totally convince the audience to view Dixon in a totally different light. It's absolutely an Academy Award-winning turn, though it's worth mentioning that Rockwell has been killing it for years now.

With the exception of bigger titles like Iron Man 2, Charlie's Angels, and A Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, Sam Rockwell has mostly stuck to smaller movies over the course of his career, but has consistently been a scene-stealing star in those projects. His breakout was arguably as the psychotic killer Wild Bill' Wharton is Frank Darabont's The Green Mile, but that very same year he was cracking-up a growing cult audience with his part as the perpetually-terrified Guy Fleegman in Galaxy Quest. Given a lead role for the first time, he's remarkable as game show host/spy/dancing fool Chuck Barris in George Clooney's Confessions of a Dangerous Mind; and one year later he was back killing it in the supporting position opposite Nicolas Cage in Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men. And while they didn't really make any money, both Clark Gregg's Choke and Duncan Jones' Moon prove that he really can play the lead actor game.

Also deserving special mention is Seven Psychopaths - which was the project that brought him together with Martin McDonagh for the first time. Playing an equally fantastic part, Rockwell is Billy - the best friend of Colin Farrell's alcoholic screenwriter character, Martin, who truly will go above and beyond and do anything to try and help his pal finish his script. It's a movie that proved that there was greatness in the collaboration between Rockwell and McDonagh, and tonight we saw it earn Hollywood's highest honor.

Over the years, Sam Rockwell has shown himself to be both an immensely talented performer, and a likable human being, so tonight's win at the Academy Awards is absolutely worth celebrating. And if you haven't seen his turn in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri yet, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of the Blu-ray, which is currently on sale.

After months of discussing and dissecting this year's most critically acclaimed movies, the big night is here. Whether you are a person who loves the red carpet or the speeches, you won't have too much longer to wait before the evening kicks off with a bang. While some betting sites have given odds on which big movie might take home this year's Academy Award for Best Picture, we won't know if Get Out makes a surprise win, or if Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri may repeat its Golden Globes success until Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway take the stage again this year. This year's Academy Awards air on ABC starting at 8 p.m. ET. Jimmy Kimmel is once again back as the host of the awards, although the jury is out on how many times he will reference what happened with the Moonlight and La La Land mishap last year. Whether the nods are understated or overkill, it should be a night full of surprises, as this year is the 90th year the Oscars have come together in Hollywood. So, stay tuned to CinemaBlend, as this page plans to keep you posted regarding which of the former nominees actually take home the coveted statues. It's time to put up, or shut up. The Academy Awards are being handed out on Sunday, and experts from far and wide are making their bets educated guesses about who -- and which movies -- will go home as Oscar winners. Several indicators have been pushing the narrative toward either The Shape of Water or Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, but a dark-horse contender for Best Picture has emerged in Get Out. Here's why.

Gold Derby is a clearinghouse for Oscar prognosticators. For months now, they have been polling their panel of experts on the ebbs and flows of the ongoing Oscar race. And as of today, Jordan Peele's Get Out has a 7/2 odds of winning Best Picture, or a 45% chance of winning. Two other contenders have decent odds. The Shape of Water sits at 11/5, or 32% chance of winning, while Three Billboards sits at 17/10, or a 27% chance of going home a winner at the end of Sunday night.

Why the change in tide? It's hard to say with certainty. Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri enjoyed a good deal of success early, taking home top honors from the Golden Globes, The BAFTAs, the SAG Awards and AFI. But various (minor) scandals about the way the movie threats its characters -- and its controversial themes -- have some wondering if it has what it takes to land a Best Picture Oscar.

Get Out, on the other hand, is a movie that has improved with age... and with repeat viewing. Jordan Peele's horror-comedy hides so many of its secrets until its final reveal that you don't really notice how tightly constructed the film is until you've watched it a second time. Universal did a lot to make sure that Academy members did revisit the movie. Check out the trailer, if you haven't seen it in some time.

What might be working against Get Out? For starters, it's a horror film, and they tend not to compete for Best Picture (movies like The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby notched wins in smaller categories, like Makeup, Sound or Screenplay). Also, Get Out came out more than a year ago at this point, and while Universal has done its part to keep it on the radar of Academy voters, it can be a real challenge to maintain passion for a movie for that amount of time. Films like Three Billboards or The Shape of Water, which came out later and are more fresh in the voters' memory banks, could strike cords when it comes time to cast a ballot.

That being said, the Anonymous Oscar columns show that trying to figure out how an Oscar voter is going to land is a fool's errand. So, we can say that Gold Derby odds make it seem like Get Out might have a great night on Sunday, the chances of it going home empty handed are just as real. Since the line-up is so diverse, with release dates ranging from the beginning of last year to just recently, you're going to want to know what your options are to be in the know before the big show, which is where this guide really comes in handy. So break out your calendars, send this article to your movie friends text chain, and let's look at how you can see the best and brightest of 2017 today.

Theatrical Marathon Events

For a little over a decade, there has been a slowly building trend of theatrical chains bringing back the best picture nominees in time for Oscar season, and one of the oldest and best established is the AMC Best Picture Showcase. Shown over the two Saturdays before the Oscars, the line-up will set you back $30 for 2/24's session, and $40 for 3/3. Though if you're daring enough to try, some locations will be doing a 24 hour marathon on 3/3 for $65. If you're an AMC Stubs member, you'll receive a $5 credit on your account for each day of the showcase, so that's an additional $10 value added to your ticket. Though if you're looking to only pick up some individual screenings of certain best picture nominees, AMC will be showing all nine Best Picture nominees at select locations, starting January 29th. Be sure to check AMC's official listings for further details, as well as more accurate pricing.

Also returning to the table is Regal's Best Picture Film Festival, which is more affordable, albeit with an interesting scheduling method of its own. This marathon clocks in at $35, but is only available through the Regal Theaters app. Unlike AMC's Best Picture Showcase, Regal's program gives you access to all BP noms between 2/23 & 3/4, with a tiered scheduling system that spreads out the line-up across that span of time. All films are shown at various times each day, so you'll need to check Regal's schedule, found here, for specifics.

New to the race is Cinemark's Oscar Week, which will also set you back $35, and gives you access to not only all of the best picture nominees, but also all of this year's Oscar Nominated Best Short Films. It's programmed similar to Regal's offering, with certain films at certain times each day. That schedule, as well as further details on Oscar Week, can be found here. But say you're not really looking to head out to a theater, or just want to watch one or two of these movies in the comfort of your own home? Well, if that's the case, let's see what each film's home video options entail at this moment.

The Shape of Water

Synopsis: Eliza (Sally Hawkins) is a mute cleaning lady for a government facility, with a pretty average day to day life. All of that changes once she falls for a specimen brought to her lab (Doug Jones). With the help of her friends (Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer), she'll try to grant this creature his freedom. Although it seems that there are forces with unknown (Michael Stuhlbarg) or opposing agendas (Michael Shannon) in mind.

Is It Still In Theaters: Yes. The Shape of Water's wide release started at the end of December, so there should be a good amount of theaters still running the film.

Darkest Hour

Synopsis: After his sudden, unexpected rise to the position of Prime Minister, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) finds himself inheriting the post at one of the bleakest periods in British history. With the Nazi war machine gaining steam, and the evacuation of Dunkirk staring him in the face, Churchill will have to prove to his detractors that he can do the job, while finding a way to provide the morale boost that the nation could use.

Phantom Thread

Synopsis: Thanks to a chance encounter, designer Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day Lewis) has found a new muse / lover in a young waitress (Vicky Krieps). Through the course of Phantom Thread, we see the push and pull of their relationship, and all of the darkly comic side effects that happen at each turn.

Is It Still In Theaters: Yes. Phantom Thread's wide release started on 1/19, so it should be pretty easy to seek this one out. Though if you're looking for the 70mm option, you're going to run into a much more limited range of options.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Synopsis: After the investigation into the rape and murder of her daughter has yielded no tangible results, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) decides to call out the local police chief (Woody Harrelson) through a series of three incendiary billboards. Through a series of escalating events, Mildred will find herself clashing with strangers, the chief himself, and even his loyal deputy (Sam Rockwell).

Is It Still In Theaters: Yes, but Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri may be harder to find as it's been running since November.

Get Out

Synopsis: On a weekend getaway to meet his girlfriend's family, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) begins to suspect something is amiss. With an atmosphere of creeping dread, and racial tension, Get Out puts its protagonist through the ringer, with each step he takes towards the horrifying truth.

Is It Still In Theaters: Much like Dunkirk, Get Out is making a return to the big screen, in honor of its Oscar campaign.

The Post

Synopsis: In the midst of the controversial Vietnam War, a study is leaked to the press that provides a damning account of how the conflict was managed throughout its inception. With the New York Times gaining the first scoop, but being barred from printing any further items, it's up to Kathryn Graham (Meryl Streep) and Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) to fight the battle to publish at the Washington Post. The only things standing in their way are nervous board members, the possible jeopardy of a recent acquisition, and President Nixon himself.

Is It Still In Theaters: Yes. The Post completed its wide release roll out on 1/12.

When Will It Be Available On Digital HD/Home Video: No release dates are currently set, though a "Spring 2018" window has been mentioned.

Call Me By Your Name

Synopsis: In 1983 Italy, a young man (Timothee Chalamet) is discovering himself in the summer sun. During that discovery, he meets a young student (Armie Hammer) who plays an important part in that process, as he's the first man he's fallen in love with.

Is It Still In Theaters: Yes. Call Me By Your Name went into wide release on 1/19, after a slow indie roll-out.

Lady Bird

Synopsis: Don't call Christine McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) by her birth name. Call her Lady Bird, the name she's given to herself. Through the tumultuous days of her senior year in a Sacramento Catholic school, she'll contemplate college, hang out with her best friend (Beanie Feldstein) and try to survive living with her mother (Laurie Metcalf) in those final days before she goes off to the school of her choosing. Or rather, the schools that dare to choose her.

Is It Still In Theaters: The screening options for Lady Bird are probably limited, but some theaters may still have it in their rotation.

Welcome to AwardsBlend #5, the first episode since we launched this podcast where we finally have actual Oscar nominees to discuss. And discuss them, we do!

AwardsBlend co-hosts Sean O'Connell, Kevin McCarthy and Jake Hamilton hop behind their microphones this week to talk about the various Oscar nominations, where Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi creature romance The Shape of Water led all contenders with 13 noms, but Jordan Peele's Get Out followed right behind. Peele and his colleague, Greta Gerwig, also made headway as first-time filmmakers who broke into the coveted Best Director race. And we made connections to the Screen Actors Guild Awards winners, who all got Oscar nominations -- so we wonder if that makes them frontrunners in their respective categories.

But things really heat up when the guys get into a discussion about beloved cinematographer Roger Deakins, who is nominated for his work on Blade Runner 2049. But he shot it digitally, and the AwardsBlend hosts wonder if the decision to not shoot on film will hurt him in his bid to FINALLY win an Oscar after 13 previous nominations and not one win.

And then there were nine.

The Academy Awards announced their complete list of nominees or the 90th Oscars ceremony, which will be held on Sunday, March 4. In doing so, the Academy singled out nine films that will compete for Best Picture, ranging from Christopher Nolan's World War II epic Dunkirk to the harrowing social commentary of Jordan Peel's Get Out.

You wonderful people have been nice enough to follow CinemaBlend's coverage of all things film through the years, and 2017 was no different. We dove deep into all nine movie that proudly call themselves Best Picture nominees, hoping on board the Get Out train early and riding the wave of Phantom Thread right as 2017 drew to a close. Now that we have our Best Picture contenders, let's revisit our reviews, to see what we thought about the Academy's choices for the best of 2017:

Call Me By Your Name

Our review: Call Me By Your Name is the type of film you want to climb into, set up camp, and live inside for an extended period of time. By this rationale, it'd be the opposite of Jordan Peele's Get Out, a movie whose landscape you'd choose to avoid at all costs. Quite the contrary for director Luca Guadagnino's leisurely, lush and heartachingly romantic excursion, which beckons you into its frames with every visual cue, then lulls you into wanting to linger by weaving an embracing message of inclusion, of first-love experimentation, and of finding a way to be comfortable in our own skin, no matter how challenging that journey may seem.

Darkest Hour

Our review: Unlike Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, which showcased a very different side of the same time period and events earlier this year, Darkest Hour isn't a war film built on explosions and spectacle, but it is stunningly gorgeous all the same. With due credit going to both the cinematography and production design, there is no shortage of elegance and magnificence in Winston Churchill's aristocratic home or King George VI's palace -- but the movie also offers up some perfect contrast with the stark, dark, greyness of the war rooms where the gravest and most important decisions are made about the future of the country. The persistent beautiful image of curling cigar smoke caught in sunbeams is the perfectly lit cherry on top.

Dunkirk

Our review: While no surprise given his track record, Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk is impressively ambitious. It is not only an extraordinary spectacle thanks to the extensive use of IMAX cameras (seriously demanding that it be seen on the largest screen possible), but it navigates a smart-yet-challenging non-linear path that plays out in three different threads -- all individually taking place over a different amount of time (specifically a week, a day, and an hour). Clocking in at only 107 minutes long, it's tightly paced, and end-to-end it is furnished with stunning sequences that leave you holding your breath.

Get Out

Our review: The great genre filmmakers recognize that horror's just a device for commentary, and while Get Out may look like everything is just painted on the surface, it's an impressively rich and powerful execution of a smart, scare-packed premise. It certainly takes cues from cinematic history, and could be elevator pitched as "The Stepford Wives meets Guess Who's Coming To Dinner," but with a playful sense of tone, amazing performances, and a sharp bite, it resonates with you long after you've left the theater.

Lady Bird

Our review: Ever since her debut in Atonement, Saoirse Ronan has been on a role when it comes to the leads she's scored in films like Lady Bird. In fact, all throughout writer/director Greta Gerwig's film, I was reminded that Ronan is an ace when it comes to portraying this particularly sensitive time in a young woman's life. She continues to captivate the screen with her acting skills, making both "Lady Bird's" sympathetic and more childish moments come to life without turning them into caricatures. While we can take issue with some of her actions and statements to those she knows and loves, we can never write off her character as a typical screen brat. It's a delicate line to walk with such a story, and Saoirse Ronan makes it look damned easy.

Phantom Thread

Our review: While Paul Thomas Anderson has presented an eclectic mix of tones and stories during his endlessly impressive career, Phantom Thread presents a stunning contrast of elegance and darkness, leading the filmmaker to aesthetically build something unlike anything we've ever seen from him. And the results are expectedly incredible. He keeps the argument of film over digital very much alive, and acting as his own cinematographer for the first time delivers scene after scene of visual splendor -- bathing the detailed work of uniformed seamstresses in angelic, soft white light and offering sinister, fire lit visions of the future through its non-linear narrative. You expect beauty in a film about fashion, and Anderson practically overwhelms you with it.

The Post

Our review: The Post, Steven Spielberg's exceptional new film about the vitality of journalism, might be his first movie to weave both genres together, pouring a valuable history lesson into a briskly paced race-the-clock political thriller that pushes all the right buttons we need in a crowd-pleaser. Shot and edited in a seven-month span, The Post boasts a stunning ensemble of extraordinary character actors sinking their teeth into a riveting screenplay, all choreographed by a genius filmmaker who is firing on all possible cylinders. The Post is the best movie I saw this year, and likely the most important movie you'll see in several years.

The Shape of Water

Our review: If you really wanted to, you could tuck yourself in for The Shape of Water and let the film tell you one of the best adult bedtime stories you've ever heard. With a poetry and rhythm that flows as strong as the currents of the world, Guillermo del Toro and co-writer Vanessa Taylor has brought us another film that pays homage to classic Hollywood, while existing firmly in a modern frame of mind. It's a story of romance crossing boundaries, of the outsiders teaming up to defeat the status quo, and of the true beauty of life available to all, so long as they choose to see it. This is the most beautiful film of the year, both in body and spirit, and it is not to be missed.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Our review: As much as folks are going to be talking about Frances McDormand come Oscar season, they'll more than likely speaking towards Sam Rockwell's portrayal of Officer Dixon. As his battle of wits with Mildred Hayes escalates to further levels of anger and one-upmanship, the events only serve to show just how alike both participants are when pursuing what they believe to be justice. In a lesser movie, we'd totally be on Mildred's side, but in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, we're forced to consider both sides of the matter, as the film shows us both sides in humane detail.

The Oscar race is a marathon, not a sprint. And along the way, there are mile markers that tend to point in the direction of the final Academy Awards outcome. While we're nowhere near ready to declare the race over -- or to even nominate a clear-cut frontrunner -- the Screen Actors Guild awards winners can go a long way to pointing out who's likely to take home an Oscar when the 2017-18 campaign draws to a close.

When you start to hear the same names revealed over and over at ceremonies like the Golden Globes, the Critics' Choice Awards and the SAGs, you begin to conclude that these same names will triumph at the Oscars. If that's the case, then your current Best Actor and Actress frontrunners appear to be Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour and Frances McDormand for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. McDormand's co-star, Sam Rockwell, has been cleaning up on the path for Best Supporting Actor nods. As you can see, the SAG winners from Sunday fit into a pattern, and we expect all four to be named as Oscar nominees when those are announced on Tuesday morning. Will that make them frontrunners? Right now, because no one else has consistently stepped up and interfered with their clear path to victory, I'd say that they are close to being the Oscar winners we expect to hear on March 4. But a lot can happen between now and then, as final Oscar ballots aren't even due for another month.

Still, I'd feel better throwing some more weight behind a Shape of Water or The Post upset if Sally Hawkins, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep or Richard Jenkins had surprised us with a one-off victory at one of these precursor awards programs. But right now, we are hearing the same four names. Will we hear all four of them again on March 4 at the Oscars? Or are one of these four vulnerable to an upset? Let us know in the comments.

With the Golden Globes now in our rear view, it's time to look back on all of the films that walked away with gold this year. There were plenty of great winners, but one of the most satisfying victories of the night came for Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - which won the coveted Best Motion Picture, Drama trophy. It was a hotly-contested field, but Three Billboards absolutely deserved this win because it told the most decidedly full-bodied, human story of 2017.

It's worth mentioning that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri surprised many by winning as big as it did. The film has generated a lot of buzz since its release, but it often felt as though films with a far more significant emphasis on technical filmmaking, like The Shape of Water and Dunkirk, generated more conversation and earned frontrunner status as awards season continued. However, for fans of no-frills pathos-driven storytelling, Three Billboards pulled off a remarkable upset.

One of the primary functions of a good film is its use of storytelling to say something about human nature and how we treat one another. This point feels hammered home by the fact that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won three other major, character-centric awards this evening: Best Screenplay, Best Picture - Drama, Best Actress - Drama (Frances McDormand), and Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell). Even with its stripped-down filmmaking style, the film is anchored by fantastic performances and a perfectly-written story that allows these unique personalities to come to life. It's a relatable and human tale about regret, pain, anger, acceptance, and forgiveness, and it's the type of movie that will likely still resonate with audiences for years to come. That's perhaps the most important element of any big award winner, and Martin McDonagh's movie nails it.

It's a surprising turn for the Golden Globes because the last few years at the ceremony have arguably felt defined by films that have done things (whether they're structural or technical) that we haven't really seen before. Just look back at the last few years to see that phenomenon in action. Stories like Barry Jenkins' Moonlight (which told the story of a young, gay black man through three distinct eras of his life), Alejandro Iñárritu's The Revenant (a visceral, guerilla-style film that put its lead actor through hell), or Richard Linklater's Boyhood (a film shot over the course of 12 years) took home the award in no small part because they broke new ground in some form or another.

With a movie like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, it's kind of the opposite. From a pure filmmaking standpoint, the film is actually not all that complex of a production, and it adheres to a fairly conventional three-act structure -- very much playing into Martin McDonagh's wealth of theater experience. However, McDonagh's ability to craft a smart and witty story that hits every mark on the human emotional spectrum -- whether it's through laughter or tears -- and direct actors to convey those emotions is arguably unchallenged. In an era often defined by sweeping spectacle, that emphasis on humanity stands out. McDonagh has been on a filmmaking hot streak after In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, and mainstream Hollywood institutions have finally started to take notice.

Does this mean that other nominated (and arguably more technically-intricate) films like The Post or The Shape of Water didn't deserve to walk away with the Best Motion Picture -- Drama Golden Globe this evening? Absolutely not. This was one of the most impressive Golden Globe years in recent memory, but Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri walked away wholly deserving of its big win.

The Golden Globes are typically a rather raucous affair, with actors and filmmakers using the show to drink a bit too much and get silly. The Harvey Weinstein In Memorium Joke

Nowadays, Harvey Weinstein's name might as well be a curse word in Hollywood, and Seth Meyers treated it as such at the Golden Globes. He rightly pointed out that it's going to be a long, long time before Weinstein is mentioned at any awards show for years to come. Specifically, it will be 20 years from now during the In Memorial reel... and receive a round of boos. As noted by Meyers, the joke got a reaction from the audience that accurately predicted what it will sound like then -- but it just got laughs here at home.

Willem Dafoe Reacts To His Own Name

In recent months, distressing news has been erupting from Hollywood regularly, with actors constantly being called out for their absolutely horrible and horrific behavior out of the public eye over the years. It's gotten to a point where a context-less mention of any male star in public conversation will immediately illicit some worried requests for more details. Seth Meyers recognized this current atmosphere in his opening monologue, using a namedrop of "Willem Defoe" as an example -- and it turned out to be a perfect choice. The look on Dafoe's face was priceless, and gave us one of the funniest moments of the night.

"I've done a lot of indies and it's nice to be in a movie people see."

Sam Rockwell has a handful of $100 million movies on his resume, including Iron Man 2, The Green Mile, and Charlie's Angels, but the bulk of his career has been spent making smaller features with smaller budgets. This has resulted in him never really getting a ton of mainstream attention... but that changed majorly tonight. Winning the Best Supporting Actor prize for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Rockwell took home his first major award, and helped earn one of the best movies of the year a lot of positive attention (the wins for Best Actress -- Drama, Best Screenplay, and Best Picture -- Drama didn't hurt either). Of course, the big funny here is that Three Billboards has only made $25.3 million to date domestically - though that number could certainly grow much bigger in coming weeks if Fox Searchlight continues to put it in more theaters (as it did this past weekend).

Seth Rogen Describes His First Experience With The Room

There are plenty of movies that wind up with odd distribution methods, utilized in order to qualify for awards season, but the way The Room found its way to audience was far stranger than anything even remotely similar. Writer/director Tommy Wiseau funded a billboard campaign that had his phone number on it, allowing people to call and ask for tickets, and apparently Seth Rogen was one of the people who actually dialed the number. Rogen told this story while preparing the crowd for a preview of Best Picture -- Comedy/Musical The Disaster Artist, and just reflecting on the absurdity of it all made for one of the most smile-inducing moments of the entire show.

James Franco Keeps Tommy Wiseau Away From The Mic

As anyone who has seen The Room or The Disaster Artist can attest, Tommy Wiseau is a bit of a wild card. An enigma in every sense of the world, you never really know how he is going to act or what he is going to say at any given moment. Because of this, it's definitely best to keep him away from any live microphone, and that's exactly what James Franco did this evening. While the Best Actor -- Comedy/Musical winner was giving his acceptance speech, Wiseau made his way to the stage and tried to say something about the moment himself, but Franco made the wise decision to stop him. We may never know what he was going to say.

Warning: obvious spoilers for films throughout 2017 are present. If you're worried about spoiling anything from this past year, we implore you to proceed with caution.

If there was anything that 2017 was good for besides movies, it was climactic endings. Some of this year's best films had endings that left us breathless, finales that made us cry with happiness or sorrow, and others that just generally had us screaming a big old "what the fuck?!" In the end, ten films made us feel those very reactions, and they did so because they landed that final, crucial punch. Here now are 10 endings from 2017 that exemplify the best the market had to offer.

Alien: Covenant

The moment that Walter and David's robot fight in the third act started, there was a sneaking suspicion that the maladjusted version of Michael Fassbender that survived Prometheus was going to pull a big switcharoo. But thanks to some frantic editing, a lot of action and the pressing matter of a matured Xenomorph weighing on Alien Covenant's final act, the truth would have to wait for the very end of the film's harrowing finale. Lo and behold, the moment that Daniels was tucked into her cryopod, David revealed how he disguised himself as Walter, and went off to execute the next phase of his plan to destroy humanity. Cue the opera music and a sense of overwhelming, but well earned, dread.

Logan

Hugh Jackman promised his days as Wolverine were done past Logan, and with his character's death at the end of the film, it was all but guaranteed. Seeing Laura and her new mutant friends giving Logan the sendoff worthy of a true hero was sad enough, seeing as the crying already started when Logan bid his sentimental goodbye in his dying moments. But for the girl we know as X-23 to go on reciting some extremely appropriate dialogue from Shane, as well as fixing the cross at Logan's grave into an "X" shape? That was the cherry on top of the ugly cry sundae.

Get Out

It's true that Jordan Peele had a much different and extremely bleak ending originally in mind for Get Out's closing moments. But in his personal wisdom, and in thankful taste, the writer/director opted instead for a moment of funny denouement. Utilizing supporting character Rod the TSA agent as a comedic foil throughout the entirety of Chris Washington's journey through the Armitage family auction was a brilliant idea that paid off no matter how the film ended. However, the decision to end the film with Rod saving Chris was the right decision, allowing the film's audience to breathe a sigh of relief after a film that put its protagonist through the ringer. Remember that the next time you're making your way through a TSA checkpoint, folks.

The Shape of Water

In a year that gave us suspenseful, downbeat and even sorrowful endings, The Shape of Water has to be one of the most uplifting endings on screen in 2017. Guillermo del Toro's grown-up fairy tale sees its amphibious creature and mute human protagonists submerged in water after a big showdown. With Doug Jones's creature reviving Sally Hawkins' female love interest, her gills sprout and they kiss in a moment of true love conquering all. It's a gentle, but intensely beautiful moment that shows the world that sometimes stories do end in a way that only they could construct, and that the good guys need only have faith in their cause to make it happen.

Mother!

If any film this year should get the "What The Fuck?!" award, it'd have to be Darren Aronofsky's mother! A film that slowly devolves further into biblical inspired madness, Aronofsky's film takes Jennifer Lawrence's titular lead through a literal house of horrors. And in the end, after everything her ungrateful houseguests have put her through, it comes time for her to exact her fiery, apocalyptic revenge on everyone -- even the man she loves. But, as we saw in the beginning of the film, Javier Bardem's God-like figure just can't let his creation go. The cycle begins anew, an unfamiliar face awakens in their marital bed, and maybe, just maybe, Bardem will get it right this time.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

If you're a fan of Martin McDonaugh's various films, you know that he has a knack for an ending that leaves the door for interpretation wide open. So after Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri puts Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell's opposing parties into cahoots, all in the name of killing a man who was involved in a rape and murder similar to that of McDormand's on-screen daughter, it's an ending that the audience should be able to root for under lesser circumstances. But after the film's examination of violence and vengeance as a vicious circle has taken its course, leading to that very ending, you have to wonder if you want these two characters to hit their target. The fact that the film ends with them supposedly heading out on the road to do just that makes the final frames of the film all the more effective.

Split

M. Night Shyamalan's latest film certainly lived up to its name, as it had Split the minds of its audience members in two with its final moments. First off, Anya Taylor-Joy's mousey protagonist proved herself to be one of the super-powered few that exist in the world with the ability to withstand physical, and emotional, damage to an extreme degree. With James McAvoy's Beast persona labeling her as such before escaping to recover from a couple rounds of buckshot, Shyamalan seemed poised to start his own universe of superpowered beings. And sure enough, the mid-credits stinger that draws Bruce Willis's protagonist from Unbreakable into the mix seals that fate, paving the way for the third film in this now fully-formed trilogy, Glass. For those of you who wanted an Unbreakable sequel, you know where to send your thanks.

Good Time

Throughout the Sadfie Brothers' Good Time, one wild night of law-breaking throughout New York City is shown to us through the able hands of Robert Pattinson's brotherly heel, Connie. Escalating through a series of behaviors that are supposedly in the name of freeing his incarcerated brother, it begs the question of what this horrible person won't do to win the game he's supposedly playing. And then, after an accidental death of a fellow hoodlum, and his eventual apprehension by the police, Connie ultimately does the right thing. We learn that he's going off to jail, while his mentally disabled brother is freed from the local lock-up and put into a therapy program that'll help him integrate into society. It's a bittersweet ending that focuses on the wronged party, rather than the last minute redemption of our anti-hero. In short, it's a brilliant reversal.

Patti Cake$

Throughout Patti Cake$, the relationship between Patricia Dumbrowski and her mother Barb is a tense minefield of hurt feelings, broken dreams and Barb's constant need to put down her own daughter. Yet Patti perseveres in the name of her rap career: past her mother's constant doubt, her grandmother's untimely death and even her musical idol's mockery. And what does that persistence get her? Well, it gets her group PB&J a shot at fame, the result of which delivers a hell of a crescendo of good feelings. What's better is that in the moment, during the group's live performance of what will be their breakout hit, she invites her mother to rekindle her own musical dreams. In that moment, Patti wins for herself, and her mother, in a surprise that her grandmother would have loved to have seen for herself.

Baby Driver

If ever there was a moment where you wanted a hero to make it out without a scratch, just like in the movies, Baby and Debora's final drive in Baby Driver has to be it. And yet, Edgar Wright threw a big old curveball right through the heart of anyone who thought they'd get away with it, by sending Ansel Elgort's Baby straight through the justice system. While he was a good kid at heart, he had aided and abetted in a string of robberies, and there was no beating that rap. But at least he co-operated in the end, with his sentence being set at 25 years with a parole hearing set to happen in just five short years. With Debora promising she'll go the distance and wait for him, we're shown a scene that could either be their reunion or just a dream. Here's hoping Baby Driver's proposed sequel answers this question once and for all, should it come to pass.

The year 2017 saw some fantastic movies released into theaters, and fans should take a moment to thank some of the undersung heroes of the industry: the writers. While it's sometimes easy to forget thanks to a blistering performance or awesome direction, scripts are the foundation of what makes a film great, and most of the best material starts on the page. This includes the bulk of the fantastic dialogue that one hears, and it's that particular area of the craft that we're here to celebrate.

We heard many amazing back-and-forths and one-liners on the big screen in 2017, but as we do every year, we have taken on the task of isolating what we see as the 10 best bits of dialogue. Did you favorite make our list? Read on and find out!

"You punched me in the face, you made me walk through shitty water, brought me to a fucking crackhead house, and now... I'm gonna have to kill this fucking clown. Welcome to The Losers Club, asshole!" -- IT

Andres Muschietti and his team of filmmakers made many brilliant decisions in the casting of IT, but picking Finn Wolfhard as Richie proved to be a truly inspired choice. The Stranger Things star did a brilliant job bringing to life the most foul-mouthed member of The Losers Club, and there are countless moments where he elicits a big laugh. Of all his fantastic lines in the movie, however, we're picking the spine-tingler he delivers just as his friends attack Pennywise and save Bill in the final battle.

In the moment, the evil entity that has been haunting Derry, Maine for centuries has the upper-hand, offering to spare everyone if they would be willing to sacrifice Bill. At first it looks like Richie may be preparing to take the deal, noting the horrible things that he's experience under Bill's leadership, but his quick turnaround makes for one of cinema's best moments and lines in 2017.

"So, this is what it feels like." -- Logan

Few actors get to play a fantastic character for two feature films let alone nine, which serves to highlight just how amazing Hugh Jackman's run as Wolverine really is. Sure, not every movie was amazing, and some roles were basically cameos, but it has still been a thrill to watch the big screen character's evolution over the last 17 years. It's particularly impressive because of the awesome end note provided to him in James Mangold's Logan, which gives him not only an excellent send-off, but includes some phenomenal last words from the legendary hero.

Outside of the three razor-sharp claws he has jutting from his knuckles, Wolverine is best known for his healing factor and practically being immortal -- which makes his end so much more impactful in Logan. He had been alive for nearly two centuries, and while he witnessed constant death and destruction, he could never fully realize what it was like for himself. Thus, "So, this is what it feels like" makes for a perfect goodbye.

"I'm TS-motherfuckin'-A. We handle shit. That's what we do. Consider this situation fuckin' handled." -- Get Out

Part of what makes Get Out such a surprise is the fact that it's a horror film coming from a filmmaker best known for doing comedy, but it's important to note that Jordan Peele didn't totally leave laughs behind in his directorial debut. The movie features many funny, tension-breaking moments where Peele demonstrates his gifts for levity, with the most chuckles coming courtesy of LilRel Howery's Rod Williams. The character has many fantastic moments and great lines throughout the feature, but none better than what proves to be the final bit of dialogue in the piece.

While the Transportation Security Administration has been the subject of a good amount of rage and satire in the last 16 years, Rod Williams is an agent very proud of his job and his organization. He smells trouble right from the start when he learns that his best friend, Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), is visiting the parents of his white girlfriend, and it's those instincts that lead him to save the day.

"If you don't see me again, it's because I'm dead." -- Baby Driver

Foreshadowing is one of writer/director Edgar Wright's favorite tools as a screenwriter, but in Baby Driver he accomplishes what can basically be described as anti-foreshadowing. Following the movie's stunning opening heist/chase scene and wrap up, Jon Bernthal's Griff tells his fellow criminals, "If you don't see me again, it's because I'm dead." It's an odd line to be sure, and you don't really think about it much in the moment, but it turns out that it's a brilliant way-homer joke that only comes together when you realize that the character never appears again after that scene.

Since Baby Driver's release, the line has been the subject of some fun arguments, particularly because of Edgar Wright's comments regarding Baby Driver 2. If a sequel is made, it's totally possible that Griff could make a comeback, but as long as he doesn't appear he remains dead. Basically, he's cinema's equivalent of Schrodinger's Cat, which is a rather fascinating idea to generate from one simple bit of dialogue.

"I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!" -- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

In the first Guardians of the Galaxy, Michael Rooker's Yondu is painted as a cross between Boba Fetta and Jabba The Hutt, but it's in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 where writer/director James Gunn gives him true opportunity to flourish. We not only get a great deal of backstory that explains where he's been and why he does what he does, but he also gets to deliver the best line in what is a superhero blockbuster full of memorable one-liners.

The moment comes in the third act when Yondu is using his Yaka Arrow to fly and assemble with the other Guardians of the Galaxy. Hanging from his whistle-controlled weapon, he looks as though he might as well be flying with an umbrella, leading Chris Pratt's Star-Lord to make the Mary Poppins comparison -- a comparison Yondu fully embraces. It's a bittersweet scene in retrospect, given the father-son bonding and the blue alien's eventual sacrifice, but in the moment its hilarious and one of the funniest lines of 2017.

"Never." -- Darkest Hour

As depicted in Joe Wright's Darkest Hour, the number of world-changing decisions thrust upon Winston Churchill when he became Prime Minister was astonishing. European allies were under siege by Nazi forces, British soldiers were being slaughtered and pushed back to the beaches of Dunkirk, and opponents in his own government demanded acquiescence to Adolf Hitler in order to prevent invasion. This all starts to seem like to much for Gary Oldman's Churchill in the third act of the movie, but some very simple advice from some very ordinary people inspires him to do what he knows is right in the face of extreme opposition.

It may not be based on a specific true story, but Winston Churchill's venture to the London Underground towards the end of Darkest Hour still makes for a remarkable, impactful sequence. While the great leader is suffering doubts in the face of possible Nazi appeasement, he is amazed to discover that the citizens of London do not even flinch when posed with the same question. You never bow down to a great evil -- you fight it with everything you have.

"The only way to protect the right to publish is to publish" -- The Post

The central conflict at the heart of Steven Spielberg's The Post is a simple one, but also one with world-changing consequences. The esteemed members of the Washington Post -- including Editor in Chief Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) and owner Kay Graham (Meryl Streep) -- must decide if publishing classified documents for the benefit of the American people is worth potentially spending years in prison. It's an issue that obviously creates a lot of consternation and side-choosing, but it's ultimately a simple message that drives the journalists to do the right thing.

In an age when journalism is constantly under fire, The Post is a film that reminds us of the importance of the Fourth Estate, and the idea of publishing to protect the right to publish is obviously a huge part of that. It's the strong moral philosophy that the protagonists of the story choose to follow, and it's their determination to do so that makes the Spielberg movie one of the best of the year.

"I did not hit her. It's not true. It's bullshit! I did not hit her. I did not. Oh, hai Mark." -- The Disaster Artist

Yes, this is an iconic line from writer/director Tommy Wiseau's notoriously terrible The Room, but that's part of the joy that is James Franco's movie about moviemaking, The Disaster Artist: an opportunity to rediscover all of the 2003 film's worst/best moments. This includes the scene that has inspired a million memes thanks to its ridiculousness and dialogue delivery -- but Franco's film shows that the true backstory behind the line is more insane than you could imagine.

Watching The Room, you may have thought that this line reading must have been the result of a short budget and the crew being unable to get more than a few takes. As The Disaster Artist reveals, this couldn't be further from the truth. Tommy Wiseau was actually given more than 30 attempts to try and nail this horribly written dialogue that he himself wrote, and it was only after he added a water bottle to the mix that he was able to get it done. It's a moment perfectly recreated in James Franco's film -- and it makes us hope even harder that his production somehow managed to create a shot-for-shot remake of the inspirational feature.

"This didn't put an end to shit, you fucking retard; this is just the fucking start. Why don't you put that on your Good Morning Missouri fucking wake up broadcast, bitch?" -- Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

As previously seen demonstrated in films like In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, writer/director Martin McDonagh has a wonderful way with swear words -- and that's a tradition very much kept up in his latest, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Mildred Hayes, the protagonist played by Frances McDormand, has one hell of a mouth on her, and there is never an opportunity where she frets away from using it. This includes driving past a reporter who is trying to shut the book on a story that she wants to keep open for as long as fucking possible.

They say comedy is all about timing, and Frances McDormand's delivery of this drive-by diatribe is utterly perfect, and it's easy to imagine a pro like McDormand nailing it on the first try. It's a hilarious line that perfectly sums up everything that Mildred is about, and hopefully is a profanity-laced path that leads the Oscar-winning actress to another Academy Award nomination.

"What's my stance on 9/11? Oh um, anti. It was a tragedy, I mean we lost 19 of our best guys." -- The Big Sick

Michael Showalter's The Big Sick is a film naturally fully of awkwardness. After all, it's a movie about a guy who meets and has to spend time with the parents of his ex-girlfriend who has been put in an emergency medically-induced coma. It only makes sense that Kumail Nanjiani (playing himself) be nervous around the characters played by Ray Romano and Holly Hunter -- but the film also doesn't dance around when it comes to racial issues. Instead, it takes them head on, which is how we got the amazing quote you see above.

Nervous about getting to know Kumail, Terry (Ray Romano) realizes that he's never spoken to an Islamic person about what happened on September 11th -- but Kumail awkwardly counteracts this with a stupid joke making him sound like an al-Qaeda sympathizer. As you might expect, it goes over like a lead balloon, and Kumail is forced to course-correct, but it's still a hilarious and bold line with the honesty that makes The Big Sick such a treat.

The Golden Globes are unique among awards ceremonies in that they offer categories for both TV programs and stuff that made it all the way to the big screen. They are generally a huge mash-up of talent and this year looks to be no exception. Read on to find out exactly which movies are already earning awards nods this year. Honestly, what is striking about a lot of these nods is that many people watching at home haven't had a chance to see them yet. As 2017 continues to march towards its conclusion, more awards boards, film institutions and media outlets will be providing their take on just what their solid top 10 rankings of the year's films are. Everyone does it, and it's a celebrated tradition that falls right in with egg nog, writing your resolutions and trying to see Star Wars with as many friends as possible. Well, the American Film Institute has ranked in with their top 10 for the year that was, and you can see that list below:

Now one big thing to keep in mind is that the AFI doesn't rank their favorites of the year. Rather, they list them in alphabetical order, in lieu of trying to rank their favorites in a preferential order. With that in mind, this list is a welcome mix of the usual end of the year fare that sticks out in the minds of the film criticism community, as well as some standouts that made a name for themselves earlier in the year.

In the corner of the predictable, films like Steven Spielberg's The Post, Martin McDonaugh's Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri, and Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water were all mentioned as honored films. Not to mention, festival favorites like Call Me By Your Name and The Florida Project, as well as early fall delights like Lady Bird, all made their way to safety on the list. But perhaps the biggest surprises came from the films that built a cloud of steam earlier in the year, despite the possibility of later year prestige players pushing them out of the game.

The biggest example of such a contender is Jordan Peele's Get Out, a film that cleaned up with critics and audience members in February of this year, shortly before Logan was starting to win folks over into thinking it would last as one of the year's top films. While some are still talking about the latter film, the former has proved to have strong legs throughout 2017, and seems poised to be one of the possible outside candidates for top honors this year. Three other early risers, The Big Sick, Wonder Woman and Dunkirk bring up the metaphorical rear, rounding out a field of 10 films worthy of distinction.

Just how much the list of the AFI's Top 10 of 2017, as reported by THR, will manage to shape the 2018 Oscar race is yet to be seen. But what can already be observed is the fact that the compliment of films we've run through are a healthy mix of both your usual trophy chasers and mass appeal hits that pushed the public to the theater at various points of the year. These crowned cinematic children will be honored at the AFI's annual luncheon, scheduled to be held on January 5, 2018. But if you're interested in seeing when these films had their theatrical run, you can head on over to the 2017 release schedule to see what's already out and what's coming to town.

There are a few things in this industry that we can count on. One of them happens to be that when Pixar Animation Studios releases a new feature -- particularly around the Thanksgiving holiday -- it lands at No. 1 on the box office charts. Coco becomes the latest Pixar feature to lead the way, and it topped Justice League in its second weekend to get there.

There are two numbers to discuss regarding Coco, Lee Unkrich's exploration of the Mexican Day of the Dead holiday. For starters, the animated feature notched $49 million in its three-day haul, which is a modest run for a Pixar movie. Back in 2015, The Good Dinosaur banked $39.1M in the same time frame, though in 2004, The Incredibles was a November opening that took home $70.4 million.

But because this was the extended Thanksgiving holiday week, Coco got a head start on its weekend run, opening on Wednesday and allowing Pixar to added a few more bucks to the bottom line. For the estimated five-day haul, Coco is walking away with $71.1 million domestically. It's good enough for the fourth-highest 5-day Thanksgiving weekend opening, behind only Toy Story 2 ($80.1M), Moana ($82M) and the juggernaut that was Frozen ($93.5M) in 2013.

What of the other juggernaut on the box office chart? Eyes were on Zack Snyder's Justice League in its second weekend, to see how much of the initial audience that the DC superhero ensemble could hold on to. And the answer is an estimated 56% drop -- large, but not historic -- to equal a $40.7 million weekend. That pushes Justice League's box to $171.5 million domestically after two weeks.

Warner Bros. likely was hoping for a better performance in the States by Snyder's film, which teamed up Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) for the very first time on screen. But so far, the international box office is bailing Justice League out. This weekend, it crossed the $300M mark in foreign ticket sales, so its overall cume is now at $481.3M. So far, none of the DCEU movies have been able to cross the $1 billion mark at the box, and I'm not sure if Justice League will get there.

Audiences this Thanksgiving weekend also flocked to Wonder, the heartwarming crowd-please that stars Jacob Tremblay, Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson in the adaptation of a story about a middle-schooler with facial deformities. Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok continues to perform well, pushing its overall cume to $277M, making it the highest-grossing Thor movie in the MCU. And Denzel Washington's legal drama Roman J. Israel Esq. rolls into the Top 10 with an expansion.

The nominees for the 2018 Independent Spirit Awards have been announced and Call Me by Your Name leads the pack with six nominations. The 2018 ceremony will mark the 33rd year of the awards, put forth by Film Independent, which honor the best in independent filmmaking. Call Me by Your Name scored nominations in most of the major categories with nominations for Best Feature, Best Editing and Best Cinematography. Director Luca Guadagnino was nominated for best director and stars Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer received nominations for best male lead and best supporting male, respectively. Call Me by Your Name tells the story of 17-year-old Elio, who, in 1983, begins a relationship with his father's research assistant, Oliver. The two bond over the Italian countryside, their shared heritage and Elio's emerging sexuality. The film is based on a novel by author André Aciman.

The Hollywood Reporter also reports that Call Me by Your Name was followed by Good Time and the wildly successful Get Out with five nominations each. This is just another notch in the belt of Jordan Peele's directorial debut as it racks up nominations in advance of next year's Academy Awards. Greta Gerwig's directorial debut, Lady Bird, which is currently enjoying major success at the box office and universal critical acclaim, received a healthy four nominations including best feature. The 2018 Spirit Awards air live on IFC on March 3, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. PT. The awards will be hosted again this year by Nick Kroll and John Mulaney. Audiences who want a break from all the blockbuster fare can skip the post turkey shopping and catch Call Me by Your Name in limited release starting this Black Friday, November 24. Going into the weekend, it looked like Zack Snyder's Justice League was going to be another big hit for the growing DC Extended Universe - but the numbers are rolling in, and things didn't exactly go as planned. Check out the numbers and the full Top 10 breakdown in the chart below:

For years fans have imagined Justice League being a blockbuster of epic proportion - finally bringing together some of the most iconic heroes of all time together on the big screen. Sadly, that isn't the developing narrative for this film. It had rough development, production and editing periods, received primarily negative reviews, and now has found itself under-performing at the box office. Original estimates suggested that the film would make a big splash in its first three days, with estimates suggesting somewhere in the realm of $113-115, but, as you can see, things didn't work out that way. With a total of just $96 million, its the slowest starter among all DC Extended Universe titles.

While there are surely many factors that contribute to Justice League's not-so-hot performance, it's hard to not pin some of it on the buzz of both the project itself and the larger franchise. There is no question that Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman earned DC and Warner Bros. a hell of a lot of good will when it was released this past summer, but Justice League has sadly been a questionable entity for a while now - and not just because of the aforementioned behind-the-scenes issues/hurdles. Following Zack Snyder's divisive Man of Steel in 2013, neither Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice nor David Ayer's Suicide Squad got the response that was was desired when they came out in 2016, and there are surely many people who had those titles in mind when they were deciding whether or not they wanted Justice League to be a part of their weekend plans. And not only have the professional critics dinged it, but it also carries an average "B+" rating on CinemaScore (for comparison, Man of Steel got an "A-," Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice got a "B," Suicide Squad got a "B+," and Wonder Woman got an "A.")

The mention of CinemaScore is a perfect segue into the conversation about Stephen Chbosky's Wonder, which was Justice League's biggest competition in wide release this weekend. Obviously nobody expected it to open at number one, but the film nearly doubled what prognosticators thought the family drama was going to pull in over the last three days, and walked away with an impressive "A+" rating from audiences. The movie is based on popular source material, namely the novel of the same name by author R.J. Palacio, which already gave it a built in audience, but it also inspired critics to hail it as the best wide-release of the newcomers this week - highlighting its ability to succeed as a sweet drama that never gets too saccharine or cloying.

Both Justice League and Wonder both proved to be far too much competition for The Star - which entered theaters this weekend courtesy of Sony Pictures Animation. The Bible-inspired feature tells the story of the birth of Jesus from the perspective of a goofy donkey, and while it tried to both stir up some holiday spirit and attract the religious crowd, it looks like it managed to do neither. The movie was made for only $20 million, which means that it ultimately should be able to squeeze out a profit in the long run, but $10 million still isn't exactly a fantastic start.

Speaking of holidays, next week we'll be jumping into Thanksgiving, which is always a big time for the movies (thanks to the fact that it is a perfect way to spend time with family and not say a single word, and then provides topic for shared discussion afterwards!) Martin McDonagh works with three types of film-making clay when he writes and directs a film, and they are as follows: creative obscenities; measured but brutal violence; and laser sharp focus on the human condition. In his plays and films alike, people find themselves in absurd situations that somehow wind up with very human results, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is certainly no exception. While the film isn't as tightly put together as his previous films, it is still very much a must see in the race up to the finish of 2017.

After her daughter is raped and murdered, and a police investigation hasn't yielded any solid leads, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) officially declares war on the police department of Ebbing, Missouri. Singling out Chief Bill Willoughby (Woody Harrelson) as her target of ridicule, she rents three billboards on a stretch of road that barely ever gets used outside of town. But what starts out as being a stark contrast to the environment around it turns into a rapidly escalating situation, one that eventually draws more of the townsfolk into its path as it progresses.

In particular, you're going to be hearing a lot of folks crowing about Frances McDormand's commanding performance as Mildred, and that's something I can totally get behind. McDormand's command over a scene has always been something you could count on her bringing to any film she's ever worked on. But when it comes to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, there are several points where the narrative weaves between lanes of emotionally draining material and darkly comic wonder, with her protagonist serving as the axis to the film's shifts. Just like the script she's working with, Frances McDormand manages to walk both sides of the line with equally devastating effect.

But while Martin McDonagh's latest dramedy is undoubtedly commanded by Mildred and her actions, the effects they have on other characters around her lead to equally stellar performances from the supporting cast. In particular, Woody Harrelson's even-handed police chief, and his hot-headed deputy played by Sam Rockwell, are of special interest. Not only are both men returning collaborators of McDonagh's, but they're also representative of the two sides of the modern police officer's archetype. Harrelson plays the stoic lawman who truly lives the law and order he believes in, while Rockwell is the more damaged cop who isn't afraid to bend the rules to get the job done.

As much as folks are going to be talking about Frances McDormand come Oscar season, they'll more than likely speaking towards Sam Rockwell's portrayal of Officer Dixon. As his battle of wits with Mildred Hayes escalates to further levels of anger and one-upmanship, the events only serve to show just how alike both participants are when pursuing what they believe to be justice. In a lesser movie, we'd totally be on Mildred's side, but in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, we're forced to consider both sides of the matter, as the film shows us both sides in humane detail.

While all of McDonagh's signatures are definitely on display in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, it feels like this round is a little off. The over-arcing story in this small community doesn't seem as tuned or taut as either In Bruges or Seven Psychopaths, and because of that, some characters and story points don't seem as strongly connected to the central narrative as those previous films would have. That having been said, the finished product is still very much a Martin McDonagh production, and it's still as engaging, amusing, and effecting as his fans would have hoped.

If Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri isn't making you cry, it's making you either laugh or think in equal measure. Martin McDonagh's eye for timely drama and thoughtfully offensive comedy is as keen as it's ever been. Sure enough, there's some memorable one-liners, well drawn characters, and an ending that'll have folks debating what truly happened after the screen has gone dark. In short, it's the dark comedy that this awards season really needs, in a time and place that can truly understand it.

There are few filmmakers out there today as exciting as Martin McDonagh. The Irish playwright first got into the game with his Oscar-winning short Six Shooter in 2004, and since then has delivered two movies that can be called nothing short of genius: 2008's In Bruges, and 2012's Seven Psychopaths. Now he's back with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and the trailer makes it look like yet another piece of dark comedy gold.

This debut trailer was posted online by Fox Searchlight, and after watching it I feel the need to see the film immediately. The incredible ensemble alone is enticing (Frances McDormand, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, John Hawkes, Abbie Cornish, Caleb Landry Jones, Peter Dinklage, and more), but this footage also includes multiple laugh-out-loud moments... and not all limited to McDormand kicking teenagers in the crotch.

Based on an original script by McDonagh, the movie picks up months after the death of a young girl named Angela Hayes. The case has gone cold and the police have all but completely stopped investigating, but Angela's mother, Mildred (McDormand), is not willing to stand by and do nothing. Her first act of rebellion is to purchase ad space on three local billboards, not only loudly asking why her daughter's murder hasn't been solved, but also directly calling out Sheriff Bill Willoughby (Woody Harrelson). Soon a full blown conflict erupts as Mildred does everything in her power to keep the cops' mind on finding her child's killer.

In addition to having some wonderful familiar faces from Martin McDonagh's past work (Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, and Zeljko Ivanek were all in Seven Psychopaths), what really makes this movie sing is just the writer/director's auteur voice. Few filmmakers use profanity quite so elegantly, and Frances McDormand's delivery is simply perfect. We may not get a better line this year than "This didn't put an end to shit, you fucking retard; this is just the fucking start. Why don't you put that on your Good Morning Missouri fucking wake up broadcast, bitch?"

Truly the only disappointing part of this Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri trailer is the fact that it doesn't feature the movie's release date - but that's mostly tied into the fact that Fox Searchlight hasn't announced one yet. We're likely seeing this trailer now because Woody Harrelson stars in Fox's Wilson, which is out this weekend, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the film is coming out soon. McDonagh's past features have been released in February and October, respectively, so there's no real pattern to grasp on to there. If there winds up being hope that the movie could bring home a few Academy Awards, it's possible that we may not get to see the dark comedy until some point in the fall.
