The beloved To All the Boys franchise is finally continuing with the second season of XO, Kitty on Netflix's 2025 schedule. Filled to the brim with subtle TATB Easter Eggs, the spinoff series takes fans back to the Korean Independent School of Seoul for Kitty’s second semester with plenty of drama, romance, and family history. This all means Anna Cathcart is taking the lead in the franchise again as Kitty Covey, and now, the OG film's leads, Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, are gushing about their on-screen sister and her show like proud parents.

Condor and Centineo were the faces of the beloved teen rom-com trilogy as Lara Jean Covey and Peter Kavinsky. Both of them are also coincidentally promoting new projects at the same time as XO, Kitty’s release -- Condor stars in the 2025 film release, Valiant One, while Centineo is about to premiere the second season of his own Netflix show, The Recruit. So, of course, To All the Boys and XO, Kitty have been brought up during their interviews, and they couldn’t stop saying great things about it.

What Lana Condor Said About Her On-Screen Sister And XO, Kitty

Condor and Cathcart just so happened to reunite while promoting their respective projects on New York Live, and it was quite the sight to see. The two actresses could not stop waving at each other and the Lara Jean actress had quite a lot of praise for her on-screen little sister. Basically, the TATB franchise is in good hands, and Condor couldn’t agree more:

Considering Cathcart was just about 14 years old while filming the first movie, it’s probably pretty crazy for Condor to see her at 21 carrying on the franchise with her own show. It’s also sweet hearing how supportive she is, proving that they are sisters not only on-screen but off, and the in-person reunion makes it even better.

What Noah Centineo Said About Reuniting With Anna Cathcart

Speaking of in-person reunions, Noah Centineo guest-starred on Season 2 of XO, Kitty, and fans were as excited as ever to have Peter Kavinsky gracing their screens once again.

While speaking with People, Centineo also couldn’t sing enough praises for Anna Cathcart and seeing her in her element while filming XO, Kitty. And just like that, it’s like I’ve fallen in love with him and Peter all over again:

Isn't that just the sweetest thing? It's so wonderful to see these two actors spotlighting Cathcart and praising the work she's doing in the franchise their characters' story started. Truthfully, their comments make them look like proud parents, and I frankly feel the exact same way.

It’s been six years since To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before hit Netflix, and nearly four years since To All the Boys: Always and Forever closed out the trilogy. Now, XO, Kitty is pushing the Covey's stories forward, and we all love to see it!

Of course, fans can always rewatch the films and XO, Kitty with a Netflix subscription to relive that magic, but seeing the love and support from the cast for Cathcart and XO, Kitty might be even better.

Spoilers Ahead for Season 2 of Netflix’s XO, Kitty

When XO, Kitty arrived on Netflix in 2023, it tried its best to distance itself from its predecessor, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, which was celebrating its fifth anniversary that same year. Despite its source material being one of the best romantic comedies of all time, it was important to the creative team that the young adult dramedy allow Kitty (Anna Cathcart) to be her own person away from the shadows of her older sister. It worked well for the first season, but now that the second has arrived on the 2025 TV schedule, it’s clear that they’re no longer afraid of peppering in easter eggs and callbacks to the original movie.

When it comes to references back to TATB, the most obvious one, of course, is the inclusion of fan-favorite Peter Kavinsky, whose cameo was revealed in the XO, Kitty's Season 2 trailer and set the internet into a tizzy. As exciting as it was to see Noah Centineo step back into the role of the internet’s boyfriend, it’s not the only callback in the eight-episode season.

In fact, there are a handful of “intentional and subtle” easter eggs that callback to the original film that diehard fans are going to love. As a fan myself, I definitely have a favorite.

I couldn’t stop kicking my feet like a blushing middle school girl when Kitty fainted on the track in the exact same position as Lara Jean (Lana Condor) did in the original movie when she spotted her love letter in Peter’s hand. Take a look:

The best part is the XO, Kitty crew didn’t phone in the parallel and instead made sure it was identical to the frame used in the OG flick.

In an interview with Deadline, Cathcart broke down how the iconic scene came to be:

I love it when a show is calculated with its easter eggs, and judging by the outpouring of support on social media, it’s a move that has totally paid off for XO, Kitty.

In addition to the fainting scene, TATB fans will also find a subtle callback to the iconic hot tub scene of the first movie, as well as letter writing, which started it all.

While not officially an easter egg, Cathcart also mentioned in her interview that some fans think Minho’s constant need to refer to Kitty by her last name is parallel to the way Peter called Lara Jean “Covey” for a large chunk of the first film. We’ll let the TATB fans be the judge on that one, while the rest of us look for other fun callbacks and easter eggs to these beloved films.

There are so many types of films and TV shows out there where one of the main focuses is romance, whether it's the best rom-com movie out there or it's a dramatic, neverending tale of love. But today, we'll be focusing on films and TV shows that focus on young love – teenagers and the like, obviously. Let's get into it.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before Trilogy (2018 – 2021)

This To All The Boys I've Loved Before trilogy defined a generation of young women like me who dream of having someone like Peter Kavinsky sweep them off their feet. We all agreed that Noah Centineo was the internet's boyfriend for years after this—indeed, a culture shift.

Teen Wolf (2011 – 2017)

While Teen Wolf certainly ranks high on our list of supernatural teen dramas because that is the basis of this show, a lot of people focus on love. And I mean a lot. The romances that happen are mainly what drives this series about a high schooler turning into a werewolf. You can't really get much better than that.

Grease (1978)

Okay, while literally, not a single person in the Grease cast was of high school age, the movie itself is about young romance. While I sometimes think Grease can be overrated, the movie musical does a good job of showing how young romance can affect a teenager – in an enjoyable musical form.

One Tree Hill (2003 – 2012)

When literally anyone thinks of teen romance, they think of One Tree Hill. Running for a total of nine seasons, the series tells the story of two half-brothers who compete for the same position on their school's basketball team, but of course, their love lives get entwined and tangled as well. This is drama to the max.

Easy A (2010)

When I think of Emma Stone's best movies, Easy A is always up there. While she's excellent in her dramatic roles, there is just something about seeing her in this comedic romance movie, which takes the cake every time. It takes young romance and makes it a joke, and honestly, it makes the relationship that her character forms with someone else even better.

Gilmore Girls (2000 – 2007)

Yes, I know I'll have some people say that Gilmore Girls isn't really based on young romance because it's more about the relationship between mother and daughter, but you tell me that you haven't spent time wondering who Rory was going to end up with in this series. Before there was Team Edward and Team Jacob, there was Team Dean and Team Jess (and Jess was the better option, BTW).

X.O. Kitty (2023 – Present)

A spinoff of To All The Boys I've Loved Before, this series, X.O. Kitty, is all about Lara Jean's younger sister, Kitty, and her adventures across the world in South Korea and honestly, I love it. While romance is a main aspect of the series, it's also a fun little coming-of-age comedy that anyone can get behind.

Dawson's Creek (1998 – 2003)

Running for six seasons, Dawson's Creek is another essential teen romance TV series that has been talked about for years. The series is like most teen romances out there, where it follows a close group of friends in high school and their lives together, as well as the relationships that follow, but man, it was huge and shot the stars to fame.

She's All That (1999)

Nah, we are not talking about He's All That. We are bringing up the original She's All That. The movie, starring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook, is all about a high schooler who says he can make any girl popular and takes a bet to turn a random woman into a prom queen in six weeks. Romance ensues, and it's just a fun teen rom-com from there on.

Twilight (2008)

They are about romance when you think about it. The Twilight films are primarily all about the romance between Bella and Edward. And Bella is a teenager – and Edward is trapped in a young person's body, so technically, it is a teen romance…even if he is hundreds of years old, but THAT'S BESIDES THE POINT, OKAY? It's a teen romance.

Glee (2009 – 2015)

When I was coming up with ideas for this article, Glee was one of the first I knew I had to include here. Sure, we all love the Glee covers, but man, we ate up these romances when the show was out. Blaine and Kurt, Santana and Brittany, Rachel and Finn – it was endless, y'all. This may be about a Glee club, but we are all here for the love.

Gossip Girl (2007 – 2012)

The Gossip Girl cast undoubtedly reached a point while filming this show when they were no longer teenagers, but we all loved this series for its romances—no matter how absolutely messy they got. And they got messsssssy.

My So-Called Life (1994 – 1995)

While My So-Called Life only ran for one season, it certainly cemented itself into pop history. It was very realistic in its portrayal of teenagers and took a natural examination of romance in young love. Sure, it wasn't as dramatic as the others, but it's still a great show – and now a cult classic.

She's The Man (2006)

For a time, it felt like Amanda Bynes was the queen of teen romance comedies, and She's The Man was undoubtedly her best. Telling the story of a female soccer player who goes undercover as a man to join the men's soccer team in order to play, the movie is hysterical and creates a comedic young romance that is just too good.

Never Have I Ever (2020 – 2023)

Running for four seasons, Never Have I Ever is a great teen romance show. It's reportedly loosely based on Mindy Kaling's (the co-creator) life and her life in Boston. It follows the story of a teenager in high school and how she deals with her personal and school life in the aftermath of her father's passing. The romance is just as great as everything else.

Ginny & Georgia (2021 – Present)

While you could make the same argument for Ginny & Georgia as you could with Gilmore Girls – where it's essentially about a mother and a daughter – the Netflix series takes a hard stance on romance and really makes it a primary part of the story. Sometimes, you'll love these relationships. Other times, you'll want to pull your hair out. But hey, it's a fun time.

The O.C. (2003 – 2007)

Taking place over four seasons, The O.C. is another excellent teen drama that puts romance at its front most of the time. The series follows the life of a teenager who is adopted into a wealthy home, how he deals with his new life, and the relationships around him. It's one of the best teen series out there, so you should check it out if you haven't.

Crush (2022)

Starring Rowan Blanchard, this Hulu original film is a fun one. Crush is all about a high schooler who joins the track team in order to get close to her crush – but, in a plot twist, she ends up falling for her crush's twin sister instead and causes a whole mess of problems.

The Vampire Diaries (2009 – 2017)

Don't even get me started on this show. The Vampire Diaries may be about mythical creatures, but the romance is the plot. The show is all about a normal girl falling for a vampire that she thinks is a human, but then his brother ends up falling for her too, and she does as well as it's this whole love triangle – god, it was everywhere at the time. It's a young romance show despite the vampires being hundreds of years old.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger, 10 Things I Hate About You is one of the best adaptations of a William Shakespeare piece because it is so fun. The movie is about a student who wants to date someone, so he enlists the help of the local bad boy to date the sister of the person he wishes to date—I mean, it's a recipe for success.

Dash & Lily (2020)

It's a shame because Dash & Lily came out during a time when it wasn't properly appreciated. The Netflix series stars Austin Abrams and Midori Francis and tells the story of two teenagers who fall in love while trading messages and dares in a notebook across various locations in NYC. I mean, that's adorable. Please watch it if you haven't.

Warm Bodies (2013)

I had to get one fun pick on here. Warm Bodies is one of Nicholas Hoult's best movies, and it's so funny. It's literally about a zombie teenager and a human teenager falling in love. Like, come on. That's freaking adorable.

The Secret Life Of The American Teenager (2008 – 2013)

With five seasons, The Secret Life of the American Teenager was a massive hit for ABC Family when it was released. The central premise of the first season is about a teenager who gets pregnant after her time at band camp and a one-night stand, but of course, the series takes plenty of twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time, especially with the romance.

The Summer I Turned Pretty (2022 – Present)

Now, this is a tremendous young romance pick. The Summer I Turned Pretty is based on the novels of the same name and tells the story of a teenager and the love triangle that she develops between two brothers. Yes, it is about as dramatic as you can expect it to be, and I eat it up each time.

Euphoria (2019 – Present)

Is Euphoria a lot more mature than any other picks on this list? You betcha, but that's what you get when you do a young romance show on HBO. The series mainly follows Rue and her time with drugs, but the romance aspect is a massive part of the show, mainly between other characters, but also between Rue and Jules.

Love, Victor (2020 – 2022)

A spinoff of the movie Love, Simon, this series is honestly a great one, and I wish it had more seasons. Love, Victor is all about the titular character, Victor, who comes to terms with his sexuality and learns to love himself and others over the course of its three seasons. It's a great LGBTQ+ TV show that I personally love.

The Kissing Booth (2018)

Okay, so The Kissing Booth in itself is a meme because there are so many moments that make you scratch your head and wonder how these relationships even work. But that doesn't change the fact that the first movie is entertaining as heck and certainly makes for a fun young romance.

A Cinderella Story (2004)

There are so many adaptations of Cinderella out there, but personally, A Cinderella Story is one of my favorites. It's about two teenagers who are online penpals who plan to meet up for the first time at a school's Halloween event. It's so sweet and adorable—ugh, I love it.

Sex Education (2019 – 2023)

I mean, this show is all about romance, love, and sex, thrown into a pretty bow. The series mainly follows a teenager and his experiences at school when everyone finds out that his mother is a sex therapist, but there are some excellent portrayals of young love on this show that really take the cake – ones I genuinely adore.

Love, Simon (2018)

This teen romance movie is one of the best out there. The film, starring Nick Robinson, follows the story of a closeted high schooler who is being blackmailed by someone at school while also trying to find out who the person is that he has fallen in love with online and dealing with his personal life as well. The movie does a great job of showing young love, and I love it.

Heartstopper (2022 – Present)

Based on the graphic novels of the same name, Heartstopper has three seasons and mainly follows the love story between Charlie and his feelings for Nick, a schoolboy with whom he shares a class. But as the series progresses, you get more and more relationships that make it so much more fun.

Literally, Any Romeo & Juliet Adaptation

Do I have to explain why? Whether you're talking about the one from the 1960s, Leonardo DiCaprio's Romeo + Juliet, or any of the others, it's all about teen romance and what it does to us.

These are just some of the great picks I can think of, but there are so many others. I think these will be perfect for a little date night or a long weekend binge.

After a successful first season, Netflix’s XO, Kitty, is finally returning as part of the 2025 TV schedule. A spin-off of one of the best romantic comedies of all time, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, the young-adult dramedy follows Kitty (Anna Cathcart) as she gets acclimated to her new life in South Korea and attempts to juggle school, love, and discovering more about her mom’s past. Now, with Season 2, all the characters will be back, and it was just announced that a fan-favorite from the OG movies will be there too!

The first season really focused on Kitty’s journey and kept guest appearances to a minimum, allowing fans to fall in love with her new friends. Most fans expected the same to be true about Season 2, but Netflix just released the official trailer, and with it came a shocking surprise appearance from fan-favorite Peter Kavinsky. Yep, Peter is back, and I have some theories about why.

Peter Kavinsky Is Headed To South Korea

The Season 2 trailer for XO, Kitty sets up what fans can expect nicely, including teasing a “friendly face from home” before showing a smiling Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), decked out in a Stanford sweatshirt, of course. For those who aren’t obsessed with the To All The Boys trilogy and don’t rewatch it every chance they get, Peter is Kitty’s older sister, Lara Jean’s (Lana Condor) boyfriend.

Kitty is a big part of the reason why Peter is in a relationship with her sister, having sent out Lara Jean’s love letters in the first film. Initially, Kitty was skeptical about Peter, but he quickly won her over by giving her rides to school and never making her feel like a third wheel when she tagged along with them. And even though she’s much younger, she often gave the best relationship advice to both Peter and Lara Jean to help make their relationship stronger.

Over the course of the three films, Peter quickly became the internet’s favorite fictional boyfriend, and judging by fan reactions to the news of his guest role, he still is.

I Have A Few Theories As To Why Peter Is Back

At the end of To All The Boys: Always and Forever, Peter headed off to Standford while Lara Jean went to NYU. Despite the long distance, they managed to stay together, which Kitty mentions in Season 2. The timeline between the final movie and XO, Kitty is a bit muddled, but considering Peter appears wearing his Stanford sweater, it’s safe to assume that he and LJ are still in college themselves.

Which begs the question, why is he in South Korea if he should be in California?

Admittedly, my first thought was that he was participating in a study abroad program that took him to South Korea in the hopes of understanding Lara Jean’s background more. However, that would give Centineo a major role in XO, Kitty and that doesn’t seem likely given the rest of the trailer.

After giving it some thought, the only explanation I could think of is that he’s purposely paying Kitty a visit for some more relationship advice. After all, Kitty is a pro on long-distance relationships, having been in one with Dae while still in middle school. Of course, he could have just called, but Peter is known for his grand gestures, and showing up in person for advice from his girlfriend's sister is about as grand as it gets.

Speaking of his relationship with Lara Jean, there’s also the possibility that he hopped on a plane to South Korea to ask for Kitty’s blessing to marry her. Sure, they’re still young, but it's clear from the trilogy that the two are meant to be together. Plus, Peter knows how important Kitty is to Lara Jean, so it makes sense that he’d want to ask for her opinion in person.

There’s also the possibility that Peter is there to help Kitty with something. It’s totally believable to think that she calls Lara Jean to vent about some relationship trouble, and she, in turn, tells Peter. Maybe Lara Jean can’t get time off her busy school schedule, but Peter’s is more flexible, so he decides to pay his favorite little sister a visit.

Whatever the case may be, Peter’s cameo is sure to be a highlight of what should be an exciting season full of drama and teenage hijinks.

It's a tale as old as time, one person's love for another goes unrequited by the other. Sometimes there are societal pressures, sometimes the time just isn't right for one person, and sometimes they just aren't that into the other person. Here is our list of heartbreaking examples of unrequited love in movies.  

Past Lives

2023's Past Lives was a gem. The Celine Song written and directed romance story tells the story of two kids living in South Korea who never seem to have the right time to let a romance bloom from their friendship. In the end, the audience is left wondering what could have been, right along with the characters. 

Love Actually

There is no better example of unrequited love on film than that scene between Andrew Lincoln and Kiera Knightly in Love Actually. You know the one. After realizing he is in love with Juliet (Knightly), Mark (Lincoln) goes to her door and lays his cards out, literally, in the form of posters with his feelings written out for her to read. She is briefly entranced, but both realize they'll always only be friends. 

Casablanca

It's just never the right time for Rick (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) in Casablanca. It's one of the greatest unrequited love stories ever told on film as these two seemingly soul mates are stuck remembering a magical time that they could never recapture. In the end, they do the right thing, make the correct decisions, and know that they will never be together. They will always have Paris. 

(500) Days Of Summer

(500) Days Of Summer is pretty much the classic version of the unrequited love story. Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel) start a casual relationship that Summer is completely honest about... at least at first. As Tom falls in love, Summer tries to keep it casual until it all comes to a head and Tom is left brokenhearted. 

Rushmore

Wes Anderson's 1998 classic Rushmore is one of the more uncomfortable examples on this list. High school student Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) becomes infatuated with a teacher (Olivia Williams) while his classmate Margaret (Sara Tanaka) falls in love with Max. Both are rebuffed by their crushes and it gets messier from there. 

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) is not a smart man. He is a loyal man, though. That loyalty means that from a young age, he is in love with Jenny (Robin Wright). At no point in the many incredible events of his life does he ever fall out of love with his childhood best friend. Jenny, on the other hand, while loyal to Forrest in a way, lives a very different life and rebuffs Forrest throughout it, at least until the very end of her tragic life. 

Brokeback Mountain

One of the greatest examples of societal pressures leaving two lovers unable to find the love they crave with each other is Brokeback Mountain. Ennis (Heath Ledger) and Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) are passionate about each other, but their community would never accept their love, so they are forced to deny it and it creates an absolutely heartbreaking scenario. 

The Royal Tenenbaums

We'll admit, that this is one of the weirder, and frankly, more disturbing examples of this list. Richie Tenenbaum (Luke Wilson), you see, is in love with his sister, Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow). It makes for some very uncomfortable moments, to be sure. It's obvious a love that is rightly forbidden. Sometimes you shouldn't root for the couple to get together. 

The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel The Great Gatsby is the ultimate example of how destructive unrequited love can be. Gatsby, played in the Baz Luhrmann movie by Leonardo DiCaprio, has long regretted asking Daisy (Carey Mulligan) to wait for him. Instead, she marries George (Jason Clarke) and things get very tragic as a result. 

Lost in Translation

Bob (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johannson) are two people stuck in happy marriages who meet in a Tokyo hotel. Though they quickly bond during a night out on the town with each other, things remain pretty awkward. Neither seems to know what to do and as a result, nothing romantic happens. At least until the very end of the movie when they finally share a kiss and leave the end open. So maybe this one works out?

Pretty In Pink

Another classic example of love unreturned is poor Duckie (Jon Cryer) in Pretty In Pink. Duckie will do anything for Andie (Molly Ringwald) and while she is forever grateful for Duckie's loyalty and friendship, she is in love with Blaine (Andrew Shue). Famously, she chooses Blaine at the end, leaving some fans of the movie upset. 

Doctor Zhivago

Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif) and Lara (Julie Christie) have one of the greatest love stories of all time in the classic Doctor Zhivago. Unfortunately, war and other romantic commitments mean they never have a chance for that "happily ever after). 

There's Something About Mary

The thing about Mary (Cameron Diaz) is that everyone is in love with her. It's hard to say whose love is the most unrequited here because there are seemingly dozens of men left in the dust by her in There's Something About Mary. Obviously it finally works out for one of them, Ted (Ben Stiller) but then what about the rest? What about Brett Farve? He did nothing wrong! 

Great Expectations (1998)

1998's Great Expectations retells the classic Charles Dickens novel set in modern-day New York City. Finn (Ethan Hawke) falls in love with Estella (Gwyneth Paltrow) but she is evasive and, frankly, mean, about it. She leads him on and uses him to make her fiancee jealous. He never forgets her and eventually, years later, his love is returned. 

La La Land

La La Land is a classic example of two people never quite syncing up romantically when they clearly have a passion for each other. For one reason or another throughout the movie, the time never quite works for Seb (Ryan Gosling) and Mia (Emma Stone). They were just destined to be apart. 

Les Misérables

Les Misérables includes one of the most famous examples of unrequited love in Western storytelling. Eponine, played by Samantha Barks in the 2012 adaption of the musical, is in love with Marius, but he doesn't return the feelings and as a result, she gives one of the most stirring performances of a song on film with "On My Own."

Roxanne

Steve Martin's underrated comedy Roxanne is loosely based on the famous play Cyrano de Bergerac. Like Cyrano, Martin's character, C.D., has everything going for him, but his unnaturally large nose holds him back from professing his true love for Roxanne (Daryl Hannah). 

My Best Friend's Wedding

The title says it all. My Best Friend's Wedding is another classic example of how things happen between two close friends who maybe want more, but never take the leap and realize it's too late when one or the other moves on. It's a hard moment for everyone involved. 

Chasing Amy

There are a lot of problematic things in Chasing Amy that we don't need to get into here. Despite those problems, the story is still, at its heart, a story about a man (Ben Affleck) in love with a woman (Joey Lauren Adams) who doesn't reciprocate that love. She has no obligation to, but that doesn't make it less heartbreaking in the end for Affleck's character, Holden. 

Once

Missed connections, or bad timing, is the tale told in Once. Two musicians with an obvious connection both artistically and romantically never connect on the latter for a myriad of reasons and though both seem to want it to happen, life and fate keep them apart. It's a sad, and actually somewhat heartwarming story. 

To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) is like almost every high school in some ways. We've all had crushes in high school that go unfulfilled, but Lara takes things to an extreme, writing letters to all the crushes she has, and it's a lot. The letters are never meant to be read by the intended recipient but kept only for her. When the letters get out, things get very messy with love triangles and lots of hurt feelings. 

The Remains of the Day

James Stevens and Sally Kenton (Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson, respectively) are servants in stately English country estates who have a very complicated relationship that seems like it should be more than it is. Sally is especially in love with James, but he refuses to let her in. There is regret on both sides in the end, though nothing ever comes of their love. 

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) just can't get over his ex, Sarah (Kristen Bell). When he finds himself stuck in the same Hawaiian resort as Sarah and her obnoxious new boyfriend, played by Russell Brand, things go from bad to worse. He obsesses over Sarah and is blind to the fact that Rachel (Mila Kunis) is the much better romantic option. Eventually, he realizes the choice is clear. 

Edward Scissorhands

Poor Edward (Johnny Depp) in Edward Scissorhands. He never really has a chance to find true love, despite his obvious attraction to Kim (Winona Ryder). She too, reveals her love to him, finally, but both realize it can never happen between them and they part forever. 

The Last Of The Mohicans

Like many classic stories of unfulfilled love The Last Of The Mohicans sees Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) and Cora (Madeleine Stowe) unable to truly be happy together because of the circumstances of their time and place in history. It's not that they don't try, it's that war and society won't allow them to live happily ever after. 

West Side Story

There is no more classic example of forbidden love than Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Many versions of Shakespeare's classics have been told on film, and West Side Story is one of the greatest of them all. Two people caught between their love for each other and their loyalty to their gangs find it impossible to be together in one of the most tragic stories ever told. 

An Affair to Remember

A tragic missed connection fouls up what could have been an amazing romance between Nickie (Cary Grant) and Terry (Deborah Kerr) in An Affair To Remember. For once, the stars align and it seems two lovers, caught in unhappy relationships, will ditch their partners to be together but fate intervenes tragically and it seems they will never end up happy. Or will they?

He's Just Not That Into You

So, do we really need to explain how this one works? The title alone tells you everything you need to know, right? He's Just Not That Into You is a movie with an all-star cast whose characters are in a lot of messy relationships and there are unrequited feelings all around. 

One Day

Dexter (Jim Sturgess) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) spent 20 years flirting with the obvious. They are great friends and at times, each one wants more, but it's never at the same time. 

Her

Well, this is one of the weirder ones here, for sure. Her is an unrequited love story about a man, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who is in love with a computer program with the voice of Scarlett Johansson. It's easy to see why things don't work out here, right?

Broadcast News

Broadcast News is an underrated classic from the '80s that despite a myriad of Oscar nominations, seems to be almost forgotten these days. That's too bad because it's a great movie. In the movie, there is a pretty messy love triangle between the three main characters, though none end up together. None of them seem particularly happy about it, either. 

Paper Towns

Unrequited high school love is something most people are familiar with and Paper Towns tells a fairly straight forward version of the classic tale of the socially awkward kid in love with the popular kid. Even though it's not the most original of stories, it's told in a great way and is a surprisingly sweet movie. 

Ah, young love; there’s nothing quite like it – especially in the movies. Among the best romantic comedies of all time, many of the best films from the genre have been about the sweet meet-cutes, awkward antics and the entertaining circumstances that can arise from falling head-over-heels before adulthood strikes. A Cinderella Story (2004) 

It seems like every few years, Hollywood tries to modernize another fairytale in a new and refreshing way, but in the case of 2004’s A Cinderella Story, they actually hit a home run. The movie stars Hilary Duff as Sam Montgomery, a high school student who has to juggle diner waitressing with her aspirations to attend Princeton, thanks to her evil stepmother (Jennifer Coolidge). When she finds out that her longtime online pal is the most popular guy in school, Austin Ames (Chad Michael Murray), a newly beloved version of the classic tale plays out.

Clueless (1995)

As if we would leave Clueless off the list!! Not only is it a great romantic comedy set in high school, it’s one of the best movies from the 1990s. The now-classic film follows Alicia Silverstone as Cher, a shallow and socially-astute high schooler living in Beverly Hills, who realizes she has her priorities all in shambles after taking in a new student named Tai (Brittany Murphy) as her pet project.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) 

One of the best teen romantic comedies to come out in the past decade is an adaptation of Jenny Han’s bestselling book, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. The movie stars Lana Condor as Lara Jean, who’s life gets turned upside down when her little sister, Kitty, decides to give secret letters she wrote about each of the crushes in her life to their subject. With those major crushes of hers now very much aware of her feelings toward them, Lara Jean ends up “fake dating” one of them, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), before more legitimate feelings surface.

She’s The Man (2006) 

A big part of the high school experience is the extracurricular activities, and in the instance of She’s The Man, Amanda Bynes’ Viola Hastings decides to crash her twin brother’s boarding school by pretending to be him in order to play on the boys’ soccer team. The 2006 comedy makes for some hilarious moments as Bynes’ tries to fit in as the opposite sex. It becomes a rather unique rom-com when she starts to develop feelings with her roommate/teammate, Duke (Channing Tatum).

13 Going On 30 (2004)

Sometimes being a teenager means wishing you were all grown up. That is the innermost wish of a 13-year-old Jenna Rink during her birthday party that comes true. When she wakes up as a full-grown adult (Jennifer Garner) who's a writer at a magazine, being “thirty, flirty and thriving” isn’t what she thought it would be, especially when she finds out her and her childhood best friend, Matty (Mark Ruffalo), are estranged as adults.

The Half Of It (2020) 

2020 surprised us with a lot of great romantic comedies, among them Netflix’s The Half Of It. The movie follows a shy teen named Ellie (Leah Lewis) who is approached to write love letters to the object of desire for her football playing-classmate, Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer). Little does he know that the woman he aims to woo, Aster, is also a crush of Ellie's as well. It’s a sweet and endearing romantic comedy that discusses bisexuality within its fun rom-com premise.

She’s All That (1999) 

Starring a classic cast full of ‘90s stars that are still famous today, She’s All That asks the question whether a high school jock and nerdy outcast can fall in love. The 1999 movie centers around the school’s most popular guy, Zach (Freddie Prinze Jr), making a bet that he can turn Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook) into the school’s next prom queen.

Love, Simon (2018) 

In 2018, 20th Century Fox gave us the first mainstream Hollywood film to centrally deliver a queer romantic-comedy with Love, Simon. The movie is based on the novel Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, and follows Simon (Nick Robinson), a closeted gay teen who begins to see sparks fly in an online romance when he starts corresponding with an unknown student only known as “Blue.” When another student finds his emails and blackmails him, Simon is forced to come to terms with his secret.

10 Things I Hate About You (1999) 

Often having a sibling you go to high school with means that one of them is on another rung of the social ladder than the other. That just seems to be how things tend to shake out! So, in 10 Things I Hate About You, when two boys want to date Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), but are blocked by the rule in her household that says she can only go out with a boy if her social outcast sister, Kat (Julia Stiles), gets a date too, and they take things in their own hands. How? They bribe Heath Ledger’s Patrick to romance Kat.

Easy A (2010) 

Emma Stone's breakthrough role was 2010’s Easy A, where she plays a high-schooler who becomes a victim of a white lie of hers getting blown up to crazy proportions. When Olive (Stone) decides to make up a story about losing her virginity, it snowballs into her being named the school’s harlot, even wearing an “A” around like in The Scarlet Letter.

Rye Lane (2023) 

One gem of a romantic comedy to come out in the past year is Rye Lane. Even though the movie technically takes place after high school and is rated-R, the more mature flick shouldn’t be missed for those who love these types of movies. It’s about two twenty-somethings, Yas (Vivian Oparah) and Dom (David Jonsson), who connect across a single day in South London following both of them dealing with some rough breakups.

High School Musical (2006) 

Last but not least, you can relive one of the most iconic modern romances by singing and dancing through High School Musical. The movie stars two high schoolers, Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens), who connect during a New Year’s Eve party when they sing karaoke together. Once school starts up again, Troy, who is also the school’s star basketball player, causes an uproar in the school when he nabs the lead in the high school play, which he auditions for to spend more time with his newfound crush.

There’s so many solid options if you’re looking to venture back to high school for a couple of hours for some young romance and laughs. Happy streaming! 

Mean Girls joined the rare club of movies that became musicals and then became musical movies. It’s a very small list that includes The Color Purple, Hairspray, Matilda, and Little Shop of Horrors. However, I want this list to grow. There is an abundance of entertaining movies that could become exciting musical movies. Specifically, many teen comedies could be amazing musicals.

The updated film performed well at the box office and, despite some mixed feelings, it generally had positive reviews. Hollywood needs to increase and capitalize on this momentum. Now is the perfect time to greenlight more movie musicals that started as teen comedies. 

The Breakfast Club 

It feels like every popular movie (or cult favorite) has done or will do a stage version. The Breakfast Club is no exception. There have been several unofficial versions in musical and play form. However, there hasn’t been an official musical of it. That is a shame because the premise is perfect for a musical. 

There could be so many angst-filled solo songs. Every main character could explain their high school story with one. Plus, so many beautiful duets could happen. There could be plenty of confrontational, romantic, or comedic musical numbers. Because The Breakfast Club is a comedy, a few characters could lean into that with their songs. Imagine Brian being the comedic relief with plenty of funny lines and lyrics. And, of course, the movie musical has to end with the entire cast singing “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds. The classic has all the elements needed for an exceptional musical movie.

Do Revenge

Do Revenge, or as I like to call it the perfect millennial Gen Z movie, is basically Mean Girls for psychos. Many of the best movie musicals have a little bit of camp to them. They’re fun because they lean into and appreciate the ridiculousness of their stories. The Netflix film could be quite inventive and funny in musical form. Imagine a song where Eleanor and Drea sing angelically at the beginning of it but switch back and forth between that and hard rock tones. This song could tell their stories and set up their devious plans. Do Revenge could be Sweeney Todd for the Gen Z crowd, but without the human meat pies. 

Can you imagine a “I don’t do cocaine” song? Let’s envision it sung in an operatic style with funny commentary from Erica’s friend. Please, someone write this musical today. I don’t just need it, the world needs it. Don’t let the fact that Do Revenge only came out a few years ago stop someone from winning a Tony and an Oscar.

10 Things I Hate About You 

I love ‘90s and early aught teen comedies but I don’t know if many of them would be enthralling as musicals. However, I think 10 Things I Hate About You is an exception to this belief. It would work very well in a musical format. The plot and characters’ complexities make adding music feel natural. Grease has many aspects that could help inspire the development of a 10 Things I Hate About You movie musical.

The perils of high school life work very well as a musical when the characters, songs, and plot harmoniously create something captivating. The 1999 hit already has all those parts, it just needs songs now. The “I Hate You” speech from Kat could easily start a very mesmerizing ballad and declaration of love. Cameron could have so many wooing songs to and about Bianca. Patrick could sing a song similar to “Creep” by Radiohead at some point in this musical. This is one of the best movies of the ‘90s for a reason. That’s because its material speaks to an audience, and it could speak even louder with some songs.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off 

Honestly, all the best John Hughes' movies could work as movie musicals, especially with their infamous jerk characters to add potentially comedic songs. But Ferris Bueller’s Day Off has such a fun premise that a movie musical version would thrill and entertain. Let’s have songs instead of Ferris’s fourth-wall-breaking monologues. The musical film could open with a song that explains his plans and introduces the key characters.

A Ferris Bueller’s Day Off movie musical could effortlessly blend big production numbers with small solo performances. It can work as a grand-scale production such as In The Heights and West Side Story. I want to see people dancing in the streets as Ferris walks down them.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before 

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before could be a cute romantic musical movie. The kind that transports viewers to the land of teenage dreams and fake dating schemes. I see it existing on the same scale of cuteness as Hairspray. We all need Lara Jean to panic and sing about all her letters going out. We also need A High School Musical-esque montage of Peter Kavinsky stressing about life.

Then add a Genevieve mean girl diddy about Lara Jean needing to stay away from her ex-man. Let’s also add a tear-inducing duet with the Covey sisters singing about the power of sisterhood. The film already perfectly captures the sweetness of first love without going too cheesy. A musical movie, in the right hands, could do the same.

Heathers  

Heathers has already gone from movie to musical, so it just needs to take a note from the Mean Girls playbook and become a musical movie. The musical part is already there, so the work is basically done. Some production company just needs to buy the rights. Then hire the director, writer, and other crew. Then start casting. Easy.  

I love the Heathers movie but have yet to see the musical. However, I imagine that it is just as fun as the original. Therefore, I’d love to see it play out on screen. Heathers the musical movie could be a real hit with the right cast. 

Bonus: The Perks Of Being A Wallflower  

The Perks of Being A Wallflower is not a teen comedy. However, I believe in its ability to transform into a great movie musical; it would fall into the Dear Evan Hansen realm. The type of musical with a dark story but that includes many comedic things and explores deep topics, such as mental health, profoundly.The Dear Evan Hansen movie may have received some backlash, but the musical itself is an outstanding modern musical that tackles some heavy topics entertainingly and touchingly.

The Perks of Being A Wallflower musical movie could do the same. The book and movie are already exceptional on their own, but if more teen films become movie musicals, this one definitely deserves some consideration.

Remakes and reboots happen all the time, whether we want them or not. Therefore, if some of my favorite teen comedies are going to be remade, let them take the musical movies route. It worked pretty well for Mean Girls.

When I think of modern-day stars that have slowly started to gain a fanbase over many years, plenty come to mind. I could think of maybe Noah Centineo from the young adult movie trilogy To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, or even go way back to the rise of Zendaya’s career on the Disney Channel – and there are plenty of great things out there to watch if you love Zendaya now. 

But today we’ll be talking about someone that I’ve followed for a decent amount of time: actress Joey King. Appearing in some of my favorite movies as a kid but only continuing to grow in her acting skills, King is a young but formidable actress and one who knows how to deliver both comedic performances and dramatic ones.

Ramona and Beezus (2010)

First up on this list has to be Ramona and Beezus. Starring King and Selena Gomez, the movie is based on the book series of the same name and follows Ramona’s adventures in her messy world while causing mayhem, especially to her older sister, Beatrice – otherwise known as Beezus. 

This movie was released when I wasn’t even a teenager, but I remember holding it dearly in my heart for a long time. I loved watching King’s performance because she reminded me of myself as a kid, and now, as an adult, I still find a lot of joy in this sweet, family movie.

The Act (2019)

I think this is where many people started to hear more about King. The Act was one of the best Hulu original shows and was based on the real-life case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a young woman who worked with her then-boyfriend to kill her mother, who was abusing her. 

The Act was one of the many times back in the late 2010s when I realized that King would act her butt off. She was terrific in this role, and she earned a nomination at the Primetime Emmy Awards for her performance as well. I don’t think anything King has done since then has surpassed this performance, but I know with time she’ll end up having another momentous role like this one.

The In Between (2022)

In 2022, Joey King starred in the Paramount Plus original film, The In Between. The film stars Joey King and Kyle Allen and is a sci-fi romance that details the story of two young adults, Tessa and Skylar, who fall in love, but tragedy strikes, and Skylar is killed in a car accident. Tessa believes that Skylar is reaching out to her from the afterworld, so she takes it upon herself to see what he is looking for. 

Because of Joey King starring in infamous The Kissing Booth series (especially the third, which just didn’t make sense), I didn’t know if I wanted to see her in another romance movie so soon, but she kills it here. Her and Allen’s chemistry is off the charts, and I appreciate how the story is unlike anything we see in a young adult romance. It’s a lovely film to watch on a chill Saturday afternoon and enjoy King’s performance.

The Conjuring (2013)

If you want to check out one of the best horror movies, then The Conjuring will do it. This movie is the first in The Conjuring universe. It is based on the real-life events of a family who moved into a house and started to experience supernatural occurrences. 

I recall when The Conjuring came out, people were calling it the scariest horror film in years, and even now, ten years later, I still believe it. Regardless, King’s performance was outstanding in this movie. There’s something about kids in a horror movie that truly brings out the terror in their eyes, and King rocked it in this role.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) 

The Dark Knight Rises is the thrilling conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, this time following the caped crusader as he looks to stop Bane, a terrorist of Gotham City who aims to destroy it with a nuclear blast. 

Honestly, you should watch the Batman films because they are so good, and I’ll be truthful and say King’s part here is small, but it’s impactful. She portrays young Talia al Ghul, and without giving away spoilers, she can convey an emotional performance without having to speak at all, and it carries so much depth for the older character. Be sure to check it out – plus, there are so many cool behind-the-scenes facts of The Dark Knight.

White House Down (2013)

Directed by Roland Emmerich, White House Down stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx and follows the story of how a Capitol policeman makes it his mission to rescue his daughter as well as the President of the United States when terrorists attack the White House. 

There are plenty of action films out there that are fun to watch, and I immensely enjoy White House Down. Personally, this was one of the first King movies where I loved seeing her in an action role, and her parts with Tatum (who played her father) were enjoyable to watch.

Fargo (2014 – 2015)

Fargo is an anthology black-comedy crime series – one of the best FX drama shows. Each season occurs in a new state and follows a new crime that not only turns people’s lives upside down but changes everything forever. 

King portrays Greta Grimly, the daughter of Gus, an officer in the series, and ugh, I wish I could go on for hours about how great she is, even in a recurring fashion, but I don’t want to spoil what happens in this show. I will say that the first season of Fargo is the best – and if you love Joey King, this is the show to watch besides The Act.

Bullet Train (2022)

Lastly, we must discuss Bullet Train, arguably King’s most significant role since The Kissing Booth franchise. This fast-paced, high-action movie follows the story of an operative who has to deliver a package somehow and survive a slew of killers on a bullet train in Asia.  

The Bullet Train cast itself is fantastic and full of incredible actors, but I ended up liking Joey King’s “The Prince.” While I don’t think she was the best assassin on the train at the end of the day, her scenes were funny and full of life, and I wanted to see more of her added to the story. I think action movies suit her well.

I know deep down you might be thinking, “Where are the movies from The Kissing Booth trilogy?” And to that, I say, no, those are not King’s best movies. Sure, they are pretty famous, but for all the wrong reasons, and while her acting is fine in them, I’ll give her the praise she deserves from these movies and shows because they’re better. 

That aside, there are plenty of great options here – and now, we can all check some of them while we wait for any update on her new movie, The Uglies – whenever that drops on the Netflix premiere schedule. 

If you haven’t seen Bottoms, the hilarious sex comedy that made its wide release debut last weekend, stop what you’re doing and go buy a movie ticket now. The queer, female-led comedy centers on two unpopular best friends who start a high school fight club to meet girls and hopefully lose their virginity. It’s zany, raunchy and encapsulates the highs and lows of growing up and exploring who you are as a Gen-Z teenager. 

After leaving the theater and catching my breath from laughing so hard, I immediately started wracking my brain, wondering what other movies I could watch that would evoke a similar sense of Gen-Z panic and belonging in me. Thankfully, I ended up with an impressive list of Gen-Z humor and angst-ridden, female-led movies that certainly pair well with Bottoms. So, without further ado, here are seven movies to watch after Bottoms that are available to stream from home. 

Do Revenge (2022)

Released almost a year ago on Netflix, Do Revenge is a teen black comedy loosely inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train. The movie centers on Drea (Camila Mendes), a popular student whose boyfriend leaks an intimate video of her to the entire school, and Eleanor (Maya Hawke), a transfer student who was falsely accused of forcibly kissing another girl at summer camp. The two outcast girls decide to team up and seek revenge on their assailants. 

Like Bottoms, Do Revenge is full of questionable choices and Gen-Z humor. Both movies also explore the intricacies of teenage female friendship and queer relationships, and they’re both directed and written by impressive women. Ironically though, Do Revenge has less death than Bottoms does.

Booksmart (2019)

When it comes to talking about quintessential Gen-Z coming-of-age movies, Booksmart is often at the top of the list. The movie, which served as Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut,  follows two straight-A overachievers who discover that their classmates have managed to get into top-tier colleges while also enjoying their high school experience. Realizing the error in their ways, Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) decide to cram four years worth of partying into the night before their high school graduation. 

Booksmart and Bottoms both share a love for raunchy comedy and foul mouth teenage girls, making it the perfect movie to check out after leaving the theater. They also both explore what it’s like for unpopular girls to suddenly get the attention of the more popular crowd. Additionally, Amy and Molly share much in common with Bottoms’ leads PJ (Rachel Sennott) and Josie (Aye Edebiri), as they struggle to understand each other despite being best friends for years.

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)

Despite being one of the earliest Gen-Z coming-of-age movies released, The Edge of Seventeen rarely gets the praise it deserves. Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) is already having a hard time navigating adolescence after the death of her beloved father, but it is made worse when her brother (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend (Haley Lu Richardson). After the two girls argue over the relationship, Nadine ends their friendship and turns to her favorite high school teacher for guidance. 

While The Edge of Seventeen is firmly in the coming-of-age genre, whereas Bottoms dives in and out of the genre, the two movies still have a lot of similarities to offer viewers. Aside from the obvious teen girl angst, they both also feature unlikely high school teacher mentors.

Unpregnant (2020)

Adapted from the book of the same name, Unpregnant follows two estranged best friends as they travel across the country to secure a safe and legal abortion. It all starts when Veronica (Haley Lu Richardson) gets caught taking a pregnancy test at school by her former best friend Bailey (Barbie Ferreira). After discovering that Missouri won’t let her get an abortion without parental consent, Veronica asks Bailey if she’ll drive her to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she doesn’t need parental permission to terminate her pregnancy. 

Though the stakes for the young girls in Unpregnant are tremendously higher than the ones Josie and PJ face in Bottoms, they are comparable. Not only do both movies explore the power of female friendship, but they also have rich subtexts that explore real-world problems girls are facing — like access to abortion and fighting the male patriarchy that runs rampant in high schools. Plus, like most Gen-Z coming-of-age stories, Unpregnant also dives into exploring and understanding one's sexuality.

Eighth Grade (2018) 

Popular YouTuber Bo Burnham made his debut as a writer and director with the release of the critically acclaimed coming-of-age movie Eighth Grade. Produced by A24, the movie follows Kayla (Elsie Fisher), a 13-year-old girl who is trying to end her middle school career on a high note after having a disastrous eighth-grade year. 

Though the characters in Eight Grade are much younger than those in Bottoms, a lot of the same themes are still relevant. Both movies explore teenage anxiety and uncertainty when it comes to dating. They are also sex-positive movies, with both showing that girls of all ages experience sexual tendencies just like their male counterparts, and that it’s not something that should be shameful.

You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah (2023)

One of the newest and best additions to the Gen-Z coming-of-age genre is the Sandler family-led You’re So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah. Stacy (Sunny Sandler) is on the precipice of adulthood as she and her best friend Lydia (Samantha Lorraine) begin planning their epic Bat Mitzvahs. However, the girls’ tight friendship is tested when Lydia begins dating Stacy’s longtime crush, causing her to call off their friendship and un-invite Lydia to her big day. 

You’re So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah is a quintessential pre-teen angsty movie that has the power to become a classic amongst Gen-Z viewers. Though not nearly as raunchy as Bottoms, the movies do speak to Gen-Z audiences in the way they portray womanhood and all its ups and downs as a positive thing instead of a negative thing that shouldn’t be talked about. Both movies also explore the dynamics of popularity and how romantic relationships can jeopardize important platonic relationships.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018)

Though To All The Boys I've Loved Before is largely considered a teen romantic comedy and credited for revitalizing the romantic comedy genre, the movie is also a ripe Gen-Z coming-of-age story that still resonates with viewers even five years after its release. Not only is Lara Jean (Lana Condor) navigating her first fake/real relationship with Peter (Noah Centineo), but she's also growing into her own and learning to navigate the world without her older sister (Janel Parrish) constantly watching out for her. 

To All The Boys I've Loved Before is nowhere near as raunchy as Bottoms, but it does offer another side to the Gen-Z romantic experience. One that is built more on anxiety and pressure than on wanting to dive right in like Josie and PJ. Though much like Josie in Bottoms, Lara Jean also goes to great lengths to secure her first romantic relationship, which is why these movies pair well together.

Bottoms might be breathing life into the coming-of-age genre as we speak, but these are just a few movies that came before it that have paved the way for an authentic Gen-Z coming-of-age experience. Who knows, maybe in 10 years, teenagers will be looking back at this era of movies the same way we look back at the '80s and '90s coming-of-age movies. It’s hard to believe that To All The Boy’s I’ve Loved Before was released five years ago, but it’s true. The romantic comedy helped usher in a resurgence of the genre, especially in the young adult space, and has since become one of the best romantic comedies of the 2010s. Not to mention, it spawned two sequels based on the best-selling novel series by Jenny Han, and even a spinoff Netflix series. 

To celebrate the milestone anniversary, I decided to rewatch the movie, which I have seen an embarrassing number of times. There’s something so special about Lara Jean and Peter’s love story that has me coming back to it so often. Part of it has to do with the phenomenal chemistry between actors Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, but there are also a handful of scenes that prove why To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is still the best. 

Lara Jean Nearly Hitting Peter With Her Car

Every great romantic comedy has a meet cute, and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is no exception. While it’s true that Lara Jean and Peter have known each other for years, their catalyst moment happens when Lara Jean nearly backs up into Peter while pulling out of the high school parking lot. 

To me, this is the scene that solidified Peter and Lara Jean’s chemistry. Even with a car door separating them, they manage to banter with each other in a way that’s not only entertaining but also swoon-y. I certainly can’t forget the way Peter jokingly asks if she’s going to be able to make it out of the parking lot with a grin on his face. It’s clear that these two characters are going to have fun with each other — especially if Lara Jean’s meddling sister, Kitty, has anything to do with it.

The Diner Scene Where Lara Jeans Talks About Love 

Romantic comedies are obviously all about love, but few ever address what that love looks and feels like, especially in real life. 

This is something Lara Jean addresses early on with Peter. After dragging her to a house party, Peter takes her to a diner to decompress. While there, he asks her why she’s never dated anyone, given the fact he knows someone asked her to a high school dance the year before. In a moment of vulnerability, Lara Jean responds by saying that love is fun to think about in theory, but the idea of letting someone in is scary because they could end up leaving forever. 

This is by far my favorite scene in the entire movie and franchise for a couple of reasons. One, it showcases the complexities of Lara Jean, a character who yearns for love, but is also terrified of it. It’s also one of the first scenes that hints that Peter is falling for her for real. I know I screamed when I saw how upset he was when she pointed out that it’s easy with Peter because it’s fake. Just wait, Lara Jean! 

Peter Defending Lara Jean

After the video of Lara Jean and Peter making out in the hot tub gets leaked, and their peers interpret it as something else, her locker is vandalized. Upon learning about what happened, Peter makes a scene in the hallway telling everyone that nothing happened between them, and to leave her alone unless they want to deal with him. 

Now, I firmly believe women don’t need men to come to their aid, but something about this scene had me rethinking my statement. Even though Peter should have nipped it in the bud on the bus, seeing him come to his senses and actually set the record straight is refreshing. It’s one of the first times I remember a male love interest actually setting a rumor straight instead of encouraging it. 

Lara Jean & Her Dad Bonding 

When it comes to teen movies, the parents are usually just background characters, but To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before makes it a point to include Lara Jean’s single father. Though the two share a handful of great scenes, the one that always has me rewinding is the scene where he takes Lara Jean to the diner to talk about love and relationships. 

Don’t get me wrong, talking about those types of things can be embarrassing for any child and parent, but the movie handled the scene so beautifully. It's such a beautiful father-daughter moment, including John opening up about his relationship with Lara Jean’s deceased mother to encourage her to keep exploring love. It definitely had me reaching for my phone to call my own dad. 

Peter’s Love Letters 

The entire premise of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before centers around Lara Jean’s love letters being sent out to her various crushes, so it’s only fitting that she receives her own love letters. Not only are Peter’s love notes/letters adorable, but they also bring them together again. It's the perfect full-circle moment! 

For me, this scene proves the movie is the best because it shows that Peter isn’t afraid to be vulnerable. It also proves to Lara Jean that she is worthy of the kind of love she reads, writes, and dreams about. Plus, who didn’t fantasize about receiving little love notes from their crush in high school?

I’ve already pointed out so many scenes that prove To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is still the best, and there are still so many more! I didn’t even talk about Peter’s hand in Lara Jean’s back pocket (swoon!), Peter and Lara Jean bonding about their complicated family life (cries!), Peter and Kitty’s adorable pillow fight (I love a significant other who includes siblings!) and, of course, the hot tub scene (because, duh!). But if I keep going I’ll just list the entire movie, and it’s way more fun to watch it than read about it!

On August 17, 2018, Netflix released one its most beloved original movies, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, and it became a phenomenon almost instantly. The coming-of-age movie based on Jenny Han’s bestselling novel of the same name was a huge hit that helped lead the recent comeback of the rom-com and became a trilogy. To celebrate the original movie’s five-year anniversary, the streaming service paid tribute to All The Boys with a Hollywood billboard. 

As Netflix shared on Twitter this morning, the studio decided to pronounce its continued love for the All The Boys franchise with a Sunset Boulevard billboard. It’s not only a sweet way to commemorate the anniversary, it also seems to confirm what’s going on with Lana Condor’s Lara Jean Covey and Noah Centineo’s Peter Kavinsky these days. Check it: 

The billboard reads “Five years later, Lara Jean & Peter, still going strong.” It sounds like Netflix wants the world to know that the movie couple are always and forever even though the movies concluded back in 2021! As you may recall, the end of the third All The Boys movie had Lara Jean and Peter graduating high school and going to college 3,000 miles away from one another. While the movie ended with some open-endedness about whether the couple would survive, Lara Jean was hopeful their regular letters to one another would assist their continued romance. 

Netflix’s bold proclamation seems to offer hope for fans of the couple staying together years following the end of To All the Boys: Always and Forever. It’s not a great day to be Team John Ambrose, but it’s definitely a sweet tribute to the romantic comedy couple for an exciting milestone for the first movie. It’s also a good reminder that the summer 2018 release is still right there for those with a Netflix subscription to stream, especially if the endless scrolling is getting you down. 

Since the end of All The Boys, the franchise’s author Jenny Han has been keeping busy on a couple of big series, between being the showrunner for The Summer I Turned Pretty and spinning off All The Boys with XO, Kitty, which arrived to Netflix back in May. XO, Kitty also confirmed the couple are still together in a scene in the third episode. 

While the trilogy may be over, the billboard ignited some interest from fans to see more of Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky after high school. They are definitely among the rom-com pairings we’d love to see in another movie together. I imagine the pair of Netflix stars coming together to continue the story for the high schoolers 10 or 15-year reunion. After both characters have had some time to grow up more and live life, it’d be so interesting to learn where they stand. Anyways, Happy Five Years to To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before! 

Lana Condor may have closed the chapter on Lara Jean back in 2021 when the final To All The Boys movie was released, but the actress continues to take her experiences from the trilogy with her. When we spoke to Condor for her leading role in Dreamworks’ Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, she opened up about how her famed rom-com role impacted her portrayal of the undersea warrior princess. 

While the characters look worlds apart from the outside, upon further investigation, one could draw a few comparisons between Lara Jean and Ruby Gillman. For one, both of them are attempting to navigate the rough waters of high school amidst having secret crushes and … other secrets. During our interview with Condor, she shared this about how the two roles collided for her: 

Per the actress, the To All The Boys movies were a lesson in creating likable characters that people want to root for at the end of the day. Teenage girls (or krakens) don’t often have the most foresight and could easily be written off. However, for Lana Condor, between the two roles, she’s felt that she’s really learned about playing heroines the audience can depend on to do the “good” thing. 

Lana Condor was thrust into mega fame at the age of 21 when 2018’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before hit Netflix. She’s previously opened up about it in retrospect, speaking to how the movie was received “better” than she had “ever imagined” in her “wildest dreams.” She sprung into more projects immediately after in an effort to “capitalize” on it, but she became burnt out by all the “stimulation” of stardom. 

It's been two years now since To All The Boys’ conclusion, and Lana Condor got to start from scratch with an animated high schooler who learns one day she has the ability to turn into an all-powerful kraken. The 2023 new movie release sees the nervous teen learning of her undersea origins, and she is warned about “evil mermaids,” which is obviously much different than the tales Disney tells of who’s the good and bad guys of the ocean. 

Following Ruby Gillman, Lana Condor is set to star alongside John Cena in a Looney Tunes movie called Coyote v. Acme, a The Bachelor-inspired thriller called The One and a rom-com called Worth The Wait. We have to wonder if Condor will continue to play “genuinely good people” or start to experiment with the other side throughout her career, as well. 

People love a good romance. Even if you’re not someone who reads the genre, if a popular story ends up becoming one of several book to screen adaptations, you might still be one of millions to check it out when it debuts, and with high hopes that it’ll become one of the best romantic comedies of all time. While fans have plenty of options in that regard, and do everything from watch great romantic movies with action and comedy to stream amazing rom-coms on Peacock, like any other type of movie, it can be hard to know whether or not you’ll enjoy what’s to come.

So, we thought we’d put together a list of amazing romantic comedies that have over 90% critical ratings on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, to help you make your streaming choices. The entries are likely to reveal options you may not even be aware of, as many of the incredibly popular rom-coms of the past 30 or so years simply aren’t rated high enough to be included. Fire Island (2022) - 94%

Inspired by Pride and Prejudice, this film starring Joel Kim Booster (who also wrote it) and SNL’s Bowen Yang focuses on a group of queer buddies who head to the titular legendary locale for their traditional vacation, but see their friendships tested while looking for love. Fire Island was praised for being “breezily entertaining,” and we can all use more of that, especially when it comes to characters that offer LGBTQ+ representation.

His Girl Friday (1940) - 99%

As a beloved film of the screwball rom-com genre, it’s no surprise that His Girl Friday makes the cut. Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant star as ex-spouses, and when his newspaper editor realizes that her investigative reporter will soon quit because she’s gotten engaged, he attempts to keep her in the fold by giving her a tempting assignment. This one is a classic for a reason, and it still holds up today.

Rye Lane (2023) - 98%

This is one of the few recently-released rom-coms to be rated this highly, so take note. Rye Lane follows recently heartbroken twenty-somethings, Dom (David Jonsson) and Yas (Vivian Oparah), who become acquainted over the course of an adventurous day in their South London neighborhood while figuring out how to move on. If you want a visually intriguing tale that’s also “smart, funny, and heartwarming,” you can’t go wrong here.

Shakespeare In Love (1998) - 92%

The popular late ‘90s film focuses on a (fictional) love story between the famed playwright, William Shakespeare (Joseph Fiennes), and a woman who’s disguised herself as a man to appear in one of his plays (Gwyneth Paltrow), who ends up inspiring Romeo and Juliet. While not historically accurate, the fun is in the look of the movie and the performances, and with Shakespeare In Love nabbing 13 Oscar nods (winning seven), it became one of the most celebrated rom-coms of the past few decades.

Broadcast News (1987) - 98%

Holly Hunter ‘s Type-A news producer is becoming attracted to the handsome but dim-witted reporter (William Hurt) who represents everything she hates about reporting, causing complications with her talented best friend (Albert Brooks), who’s been secretly in love with her for years. Broadcast News is another multiple Oscar nominee, and was added to the U.S. National Film Registry, so history is on your side if you choose to watch.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018) - 98%

Sometimes you just need a sweet teen rom-com, and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before fits the bill perfectly. While anyone who’s seen this type of movie before will easily figure out how Lana Condor and Noah Centineo’s characters will fall in love, the performances make it special. It’s also one of several hilarious romantic comedies with Asian-American leads.

When Harry Met Sally (1989) - 91%

Here’s one of the few modern films in the genre which is so beloved by all that it actually crossed 90% on RT, and When Harry Met Sally is such a classic that I barely have to say anything about it at all for you to understand why. Many would likely say that the fake orgasm scene alone is worth its rating.

The Philadelphia Story (1940) - 100%

Our first perfect score of this list! The story follows Katharine Hepburn’s socialite, her ex-husband (Cary Grant), and a tabloid reporter (Jimmy Stewart) prior to the woman’s remarriage to another man, and her realization that she’s attracted to all three. Another golden era classic (also starring Grant), which ranks high for its “wonderfully witty script,” among other virtues.

The Big Sick (2017) - 98%

Star Kumail Nanjiani co-wrote this “funny, heartfelt, and intelligent” tale with his wife, Emily V. Gordon, which is based on their real experiences of starting their culture clash-filled relationship right before health issues lead to her being in a coma. The duo aced the telling of their own story, as The Big Sick was beloved and nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Splash (1984) - 91%

This “warmly funny” story of man/mermaid love did big business and wowed critics as well, with the added benefit of “charming performances” from Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. Splash also nabbed an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Roman Holiday (1953) - 95%

It’s possible that there’s never been a more charming romantic comedy than Roman Holiday, which follows a swamped princess (Audrey Hepburn) who takes a night off from her duties and begins falling for an American reporter (Gregory Peck). It’s another classic, and for good reason.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018) - 91%

The idea of someone realizing they’re out of their depth with the well-to-do and somewhat disapproving family of their boyfriend/girlfriend has certainly been done before, but likely not with such a “surfeit of visual razzle dazzle” as was seen in the 2018 mega-hit, Crazy Rich Asians. And, we still want that sequel!

Set It Up (2018) - 92%

Set it Up delighted millions (critics included) with a Netflix subscription in 2018, as it focuses on a duo of overworked assistants who set their workaholic bosses up to date in order to free up their own personal time. 

The American President (1995) - 91%

What happens when a widowed president who’s up for reelection begins dating a lobbyist? Critics loved how The American President answered that question with “poignant observations” and “political bite.”

It Happened One Night (1934) - 98%

Another golden age screwball classic, It Happened One Night follows an impetuous heiress (Claudette Colbert) as she falls in with a reporter (Clark Gable) who agrees to reunite her with her husband for a scoop, but, of course, love complicates things. Definitely watch the movie said to be “unsurpassed” by the rom-coms it’s inspired.

Palm Springs (2020) - 94%

Who wouldn’t want to watch a “refreshingly original” movie where two wedding guests stuck in a time loop fall in love? Use your Hulu subscription to enjoy it.

Enough Said (2013) - 95%

A divorced, single mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is very happy with her new romance, until she realizes a new friend who keeps putting down her own ex is talking about said new beau (James Gandolfini). Not a lot of rom-coms follow a couple in their middle years, but Enough Said does it, and in a way that’s “wryly charming.”

Groundhog Day (1993) - 94%

Again with the time loop goodness, as Bill Murray’s weatherman is stuck repeating the same day and eventually falls for his new producer (Andie MacDowell) despite himself. Critics called it “smart, sweet, and inventive,” and, you know what? They’re right!

Sing Street (2016) - 95%

This ‘80s-set teen romance follows a boy who starts a band to impress a girl, but the simple story is set as a “feel-good musical” that will definitely lighten any load you might be feeling.

High Fidelity (2000) - 91%

This John Cusack starrer, which follows a record store owner as he talks a walk down memory lane with his own failed romances, became a near instant classic for its “entertaining story” and “rock-solid soundtrack.”

Say Anything (1989) - 98%

Possibly the first rom-com starring Cusack that people (especially ones of a certain age) think of, Say Anything helped break the teen rom-com mold with its “equally funny and heartfelt” story of an underachiever courting the smartest girl in school. It’s still a winner all these years later.

Four Weddings And A Funeral (1994) - 96%

One of the few modern classics that truly rank high, critically. The “winsome performances” of Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell are certainly part of that, but Four Weddings and a Funeral is also worth watching for its “irresistibly breezy humor.”

Moonstruck (1987) - 92%

As “one of the decade’s most appealing comedies,” just try watching this Oscar-winning film starring Cher (who won Best Actress) and Nicolas Cage without a smile on your face. It’s impossible!

Bull Durham (1988) - 97%

This story of two minor league baseball players (Kevin Costner and Tim Robbins) and the groupie (Susan Sarandon) who romances them both is said to show the Yellowstone cast member at “his funniest and most charismatic,” but I don’t think most who’ve seen it would object to that praise being heaped on all of the stars.

Pillow Talk (1959) - 94%

We’re heading back to the olden days now, for a delightful rom-com about a smart, independent interior designer (Doris Day) who finds herself falling for her playboy neighbor (Rock Hudson) when he courts her under false pretenses. Like many of these movies, Pillow Talk sparkles with great performances, and should leave viewers joyful.

The Shop Around The Corner (1940) - 99%

I’m guessing that many won’t know that this lesser-known Jimmy Stewart film (which was, itself, based on a play) actually inspired a modern classic that didn’t make this list: You’ve Got Mail. With the latter’s relatively paltry 70% Fresh rating compared to the former’s whopping 99%, you can’t go wrong watching the original.

L.A. Story (1991) - 93%

L.A. Story seems like another forgotten gem, as I never hear anyone talk about the rom-com that shows Only Murders in the Building cast member “Steve Martin at his silly, sweetly soulful best.” We follow his weatherman as he romances two very different women, all while (at least believing) he’s getting secret messages from an electronic billboard.

The Lady Eve (1941) - 99%

Once you watch this Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda-starring film about a female con artist who seeks to get back at the mark who dumped her after she was actually developing real feelings for him, you’ll know why it’s seen as a story that “inspired countless battle-of-the-sexes comedies.”

Top Hat (1935) - 100%

Our second (and last) film with a perfect RT critical score, Top Hat is legendary both for its many Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers dance scenes and for being a “glamourous and enthralling” treat.

Tootsie (1982) - 90%

This hit rom-com about a perfectionist actor (Dustin Hoffman) who poses as a woman to find work and ends up falling for his co-star (Jessica Lange) definitely rates for its laugh-out-loud funny dialogue, but the performances from the whole cast are not to be missed.

If nothing else, you now always have an incredibly fulfilling romantic comedy to watch when your movie-loving heart is in need of it.

The first thing you need in my opinion to make a great rom-com is a pair of actors with great chemistry. If the leads don’t vibe, the audience won’t jive. The common denominator among all the best rom-coms of all time is a couple of actors who have fantastic chemistry and complement each other beautifully. So, with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey’s iconic rom-com, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days celebrating its 20th anniversary, and with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, and lots of rom-coms on the 2023 movie schedule, we thought we’d look back at some legendary acting duos who really need to make another romantic comedy together. 

Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey 

Talk about a duo that just oozes charm and chemistry. Both Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are two of the most charismatic, charming and outgoing actors working right now, in my opinion, and it felt inevitable that they’d end up in a rom-com together. I think McConaughey said it best in a live stream on Hudson’s Instagram, when he described their personalities and chemistry in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days like this:

Hudson then said they are both “free” and “spontaneous” souls which allowed them to play on set back in 2003, and they really found their funny and electric chemistry. So, I’m so happy McConaughey took the role after an interaction with a psychic, because it’s hard to imagine anyone other than the two of them playing Ben and Andie.

Considering it’s been 20 whole years since How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, I think we’re due for two of the most charismatic characters in Hollywood to “play” together again as the actors put it.

Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell  

In my humble opinion, Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell are the Millenial versions of Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. They are both uber-charismatic, extremely funny, and have mad chemistry. Lightning really struck with their Netflix rom-com Set It Up as the two actors played assistants trying to, as the title implies, set their bosses up so they didn’t have to work so much. 

Seeing as the director of Set It Up already has a sequel in mind, Deutch and Powell have remained good friends, and both their careers have flourished because of movies like Not Okay and Top Gun: Maverick, respectively, I think it’s time we see them re-team for another rom-com. Maybe this time they could be the bosses.

Joel Kim Booster and Conrad Ricamora  

One of the best under-the-radar movies from 2022 was Fire Island, and Noah and Will quickly became one of my favorite rom-com couples. It’s the classic case of opposites attract. With Joel Kim Booster’s extroverted and sassy character and Conrad Ricamora’s quieter yet equally sarcastic love interest, they made for a great match on screen. 

Fire Island was a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, and Kim Booster and Ricamora played a great parallel to Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, and it would be amazing to see the two together again. Maybe it could be another modern adaptation of a classic work, a la 10 Things I Hate About You. Or maybe it could be an original story that capitalizes on their comedic timing and wholesome chemistry.

Anne Hathaway and Chris Pine 

Now, Anne Hathaway has some iconic rom-coms and some magnificent screen partners, but nothing comes close to the absolutely legendary pairing of her and Chris Pine in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Growing up with this movie, and watching these two actors go from enemies to lovers was incredible, and set a high bar for all other rom-com pairings moving forward. I mean nothing tops that fountain scene.

Luckily, there is a Princess Daires 3 in the works, however, it’s unclear who will be involved. Hopefully, we’ll get to see Hathaway and Pine together again, because it’s been almost 20 years since they've been on screen together. I think it's time for another Royal Engagement, if you will, from these two powerhouses.

Noah Centineo and Lana Condor 

I was a sophomore in college when To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before came out, and let me tell you, it was a mega-hit among us Zillenials, and remains one of my favorite recent rom-coms. The reason this movie is so good is mostly because of how fantastic Noah Centineo and Lana Condor are together. 

The two shined as Lara Jean and Peter, and led the To All The Boys cast fantastically. Now, the two have taken on other roles, and their stars have grown significantly. Now that it’s been a few years since this rom-com trilogy ended I think it’s time the adorable pair picked up another project together. They’re funny and have so much chemistry people actually thought they were dating, however, they decided to keep things platonic, and they seem to have a blast working with each other. So, bring on another rom-com!

Henry Golding and Constance Wu 

Crazy Rich Asians proved to be a crazy rich hit in 2018. And while the entire ensemble was incredible, Henry Golding and Constance Wu were at the heart of the story, and they were perfect together. While the two are set to reprise their roles in a sequel as Rachel and Nick, it’s unclear when that will happen, so it would be great to see them in another movie together. 

What was interesting about Crazy Rich Asians, is when we meet Golding and Wus’ characters they are already in a long-term relationship. They worked so well, that I didn’t doubt Nick and Rachels' relationship for a second. I think it’d be fun to see the two play out a new relationship in another movie, however, I’m also hoping they reunite for Crazy Rich Asians 2 sooner rather than later.

Jude Law And Cameron Diaz

There’s nothing cozier to me during the Christmas season than sitting down, putting on The Holiday, and watching Cameron Diaz and Jude Law fall in love. Kate Winslet and Jack Black’s relationship is oh, so wholesome. However, the big stars of the show are Diaz and Law, whose chemistry jumps off the screen, and their relationship feels like a warm hug.

While our dreams were dashed of ever seeing a sequel to The Holiday, when Kate Winslet turned the rumors down, a girl can dream. And I think it’s about time we see Diaz and Law in another comforting rom-com together.

These are just a few pairs of actors who I’d love to see together on screen again. From early aught classics, to more recent pairings that have already made their mark, there are so many couples I’d love to see together again. And hopefully, someday all my dreams will come true.

One of the first movies in this recent resurgence of the romantic comedy genre was Netflix’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, which adapted Jenny Han’s bestselling novel and effectively made its young stars, Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, massive names. Now that All The Boys has become a trilogy and its author has made an upcoming spinoff called XO, Kitty, Han is reflecting on her streaming adaptation journey thus far. 

Jenny Han just served as the showrunner of The Summer I Turned Pretty, which is an adaptation of her first YA novel before she wrote All The Boys. While speaking to CinemaBlend, the bestselling author shared how she feels about the conclusion of the All The Boys movie trilogy, saying this:   

The main All The Boys film series ended in February of 2021, giving Lana Condor’s Lara Jean Covey an ending to her high school love story with Peter Kavinski that began with personal letters getting to her crushes. The trilogy had Lara Jean and Peter deciding to stay together despite their distance in college. Following the success of those movies, Jenny Han has developed the spinoff series XO, Kitty, which revolves around Lara Jean’s scene-stealing younger sister, played by Anna Cathcart. Han spoke about XO, Kitty with these words: 

XO, Kitty will tell the first love story for Kitty Covey and mark the first time Jenny Han has made an onscreen project that wasn't pulled from a beloved novel released beforehand first. When CinemaBlend asked the author how that process was different and if we can expect an XO, Kitty novel, she said this:

When adapting The Summer I Turned Pretty, Jenny Han talked to CinemaBlend about changing some elements of her book she wrote over a decade before to be more diverse, like adding more of a focus on its main character being from an Asian-American family. The Summer I Turned Pretty centers on a teen girl going on her annual summer vacation to a family friend's home and finding herself in a love triangle between two brothers. The show, now streaming on Amazon, also features an incredible soundtrack full of Taylor Swift songs. 

Jenny Han has expanded her presence on streaming in the past four years of being part of it, and she seems to be poised to bring us even more 'coming of age' fun. 

When To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before hit Netflix in 2018, many believed the book adaptation launched a new rom-com era with more diversity. Following the trilogy coming to a close last year, All The Boys author Jenny Han is bringing us her first coming-of-age trilogy, called The Summer I Turned Pretty, to life through a streaming series, this time with a larger role as showrunner. As the series arrives, Han is sharing what she’s learning about working in Hollywood.

The bestselling author played the executive producer role in the All The Boys movies, but for The Summer I Turned Pretty, which was her first YA book series, she serves as a showrunner. While speaking to Han, she talked about how the Netflix movies affected her latest project. 

Just a few years ago, Han had never stepped on the set of a movie before; following her involvement in the Netflix trilogy starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, she received a hands-on education about what enriches a project. When working on The Summer I Turned Pretty, here’s how she felt that knowledge played into making the show: 

Jenny Han recently launched her own production company called Jenny Kissed Me, which The Summer I Turned Pretty is produced under. The series follows a teen named Belly (played by newcomer Lola Tung) who returns to her family friends’ beach house for her annual summer vacation, except this summer she finds herself in a love triangle she didn’t expect. 

It’s great to see Jenny Han taking control of her own words in TV form, especially considering that she is one of the few Asian-American female authors to get a popular book adapted into a major project. As Han shared with CinemaBlend, she really worked on all elements in getting the series right, over a decade after publishing the book initially in 2009. 

Ahead of the show’s release, Amazon Prime already renewed The Summer I Turned Pretty for a second season, which will give Han a chance to adapt her second of three books about Belly, It’s Not Summer Without You. Han has also been working on All The Boys spinoff XO, Kitty, which will tell the story of Lara Jean’s younger sister finding love.

Crazy Rich Asians made a lot of money during its initial 2018 release. Part of the film’s success lies in the best selling book series of the same name. Author Kevin Kwan already had a legion of loyal fans long before the movie hit the big screen, and his lavish world will continue in theaters with China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems — both set to be adapted next.

China Rich Girlfriend is also getting an additional spinoff, but if you loved the Crazy Rich Asians movie and are tired of waiting for the sequels, you can calm down, because there are plenty of romance books with Asian leads to read as you wait, including the last two Crazy Rich Asians books.

This book is packed with things that readers loved about the first one: a look at the glamorous and not-so glamorous lifestyle of the uber-rich, some melodrama, and our favorite Crazy Rich Asians characters.

Rich People Problems (Kevin Kwan)

Every good saga about a morally questionable rich family must end in a battle over who gets the estate. Rich People Problems allows Nick to take center stage as he tries to repair his relationship with his estranged grandmother before she dies. 

The absurdity continues, as some of Nick’s family wants to stop this reconciliation to increase their chances of getting her money. Rich People Problems is a must-read, because it brings the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy to an end. The soapy goodness and materialistic envy may make these books appealing to those who'd like a look at the world of the uber-rich.

Sex And Vanity (Kevin Kwan)

Sex and Vanity tells the story of Lucie, a young woman who finds herself unable to resist her attraction to a man from a past brief encounter. This is a problem, because her rich family disapproves and she’s already engaged.

Sex and Vanity strays slightly from the world of Crazy Rich Asians with new characters, but the novels share some of the same themes and satirical notes about the super wealthy. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Sony Pictures already bought the rights to a Sex and Vanity film adaptation.

Last Tang Standing (Lauren Ho)

In Last Tang Standing, 30-something Andrea Tang is successful in her career, but unsuccessful in love. She hasn’t fully recovered from her last breakup, but soon finds herself torn between two eligible men, one is a bachelor and the other is engaged.

Last Tang Standing takes place in Singapore, and that’s where the Crazy Rich Asians comparisons start. It’s not as focused on the life of the rich as Kevin Kwan’s series, but wealth is very much present. Like Nick Young, Andrea has to deal with family expectations, especially about who she should or shouldn’t marry. The Last Tang Standing has a lot of elements that make it easy to compare it to great romantic comedies that other movies were based on, such as Bridget Jones’s Diary and The Hating Game.

The Kiss Quotient (Helen Hoang)

The Kiss Quotient follows Stella, a woman in her 30s with Asperger’s Syndrome. Stella wants to not only become more comfortable with intimacy but wants to learn how to be good at sex, so she hires an escort.

The Kiss Quotient follows Stella and Michael as he teaches her how to enjoy sex. They also try not to fall in love with each other. The Kiss Quotient feels like a mixture of Pretty Woman and Emma Thompson’s upcoming movie, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, with a sprinkle of Crazy Rich Asians. The main way this may appeal to Crazy Rich Asians fans is that it deals with people of different levels of wealth falling in love. The Kiss Quotient is also part of a book trilogy, but has different leads in each novel.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (Jenny Han)

Before To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before became a hit Netflix movie series, and soon-to-be spinoff TV series, it was a hit YA trilogy.

The book series follows Lara Jean Song Covey as every love letter she’s ever written about a crush gets sent to them. This is mortifying in so many ways, but it brings her closer to one-time crush Peter Kavinsky — mainly because the letters inspire a fake couple scheme. Fans of Crazy Rich Asians may enjoy these novels because they’re less melodramatic but have plenty of teen drama. Also, they share the commonality of being books that have been adapted into movies.

There’s Something About Sweetie (Sandhya Menon)

There’s Something About Sweetie is the second book in the Dimpleverse book series. This one follows Sweetie, a curvy athletic girl, and Ashish, the hot star athlete and brother of the protagonist in the first book in the series, When Dimple Met Rishi. At first, Sweetie and Ashish go on a date to please their parents, but they are attracted instantly to each other and feel a connection.

Sweetie has a complicated relationship with her mother because of her size. Sweetie’s mom is not as bad as Eleanor Young from Crazy Rich Asians, but she’s definitely not winning any Mother of the Year awards — at least not at the beginning of the book.

There’s Something About Sweetie is a very cute book about young love with complicated family dynamics. It is a good read for fans of Crazy Rich Asians because it’s something more lighthearted, but with some of the same themes of culture and complex family relationships.

Set On You (Amy Lea)

Crystal is a fitness influencer who is also a curvy girl. She’s worked hard to love herself and make the gym her home away from home. So, when her routine gets a sudden disruption by a long-haired Chris Evans-look-alike, she doesn’t quite know what to do with herself.

For fans of enemies-to-lovers movies or books, Set on You may be worth reading. It also deals with Crystal’s life as a body-positive influencer and the importance of image with modern-day fame, which is what Crazy Rich Asians fans may enjoy about the book. It’s also full of pop culture references and sets a playful tone.

Ayesha At Last (Uzma Jalaluddin)

Ayesha at Last follows two Indian-Canadian Muslims, Khalid and Ayesha. Khalid follows the traditional ways of Muslim culture, but Ayesha is a bit more modern. This causes conflict but also an attraction.

Ayesha at Last creates a very vivid picture of this culture, in the same way Crazy Rich Asians built its world. It’s a really entertaining book about traditions, culture, family, and love, with a sprinkle of the wealthy life.

Crazy Rich Asians and XOXO both deal with the lead character being thrown into an unknown world of fame and excess. For Jenny, she decides to get out of her comfort zone by spending five months in Seoul with her mother and grandmother. She’s then surprised when she finds out the guy she met in L.A. happens to be a K-POP star.

XOXO and Crazy Rich Asians both created these sensational worlds and lifestyles that completely feel realistic, even if they seem hard to imagine for most of us commoners.

What To Expect: The Big Sick, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, is loosely based on the experiences Kumail Nanjiani had when his wife and screenwriting partner, Emily V. Gordon, was placed in a coma years earlier. In its two-hour runtime, the movie tackles differing cultures, love, loss, and so much more without making the audience feel lost or overwhelmed.

Set It Up (2018)

The Cast: Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Lucy Liu

What It’s About: Two overworked and unappreciated assistants come up with a plan to make their respective work lives a little easier: they pair up their bosses with one another in hopes they’ll hit it off and become happier people who are easier to work for.

What To Expect: Although much of the movie is focused on the budding relationship shared by Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell’s characters, the targets of their master plan to have a better work-life balance take things up a notch. Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs are both exceptional in their portrayals of career-driven people who are in need of a good time.

What To Expect: Plus One just works, plain and simple, and a lot of that has to do with the way in which the two leads play off one another. No matter if they’re acting like friends, lovers, or find themselves somewhere in between, they come off as real, genuine, and likable people.

What To Expect: Love Hard has a lot going for it. There’s the obvious catfish angle that pretty much sold the movie, the chemistry shared by leads Dobrev and Yang, and a surprisingly heartfelt story about unconventional love.

The Half Of It (2020)

What It’s About: When an introverted Chinese-American high school student is hired by a popular classmate to write a love letter to his crush Aster Flores, little does she know that she’s also about to go on a journey of self-discovery that could potentially change everything about her life.

What To Expect: The Half of It tackles a number of topics like sexuality, finding one’s place in the world, and being a support system for a grieving parent. With far more depth than the average romantic comedy and becoming one of several great LGBTQ rom-coms, the movie sets out to accomplish more and say something about the world.

The Lovebirds (2020)

What It’s About: On the way to a dinner party one night, a couple’s car is commandeered by a mysterious man who uses it to run over and kill a cyclist before fleeing, leaving the on-the-rocks couple as the prime suspects in a crime they didn’t commit.

What To Expect: With elements of romance, murder, and thriller films, The Lovebirds pieces together a hilarious and heartfelt story of an on-the-rocks couple trying to make sense of their relationship and a wild night they’ll never forget.

Each of these romantic comedies with Asian-American lead characters is hilarious in its own way, whether it be subtle and nuanced or explicitly in your face.

Back in 1961, classic movies like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and West Side Story would have white actors portray people of color. With more diversity coming into play on the big screen such as Latina representation in the West Side Story remake, we’ll be sure to see a wide variety of different representations in films going forward. To All the Boys star Lana Condor talks about bringing diversity to the rom-com genre and what it has meant to her.

During an interview with NBC News, Lana Condor talks about how colorful the world is and those romantic comedies should show how the world really looks. That there are more people of color out there looking to fall in love other than the “Kate Hudsons” of the world. 

Condor continues the interview by saying that she has a lot of joy and pride in what she does as an actress and that if she can impact one person with her representation, it is enough for her. While the rom-com actress acknowledges that she knows there are a lot of steps to take, Lana Condor would like the world to get to a point where representation in rom-coms and commercials is considered the new normal. 

There were some major steps forward in regards to inclusion in the MCU, as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings starred an Asian cast , was helmed by an Asian filmmaker, and became the ninth grossing film of 2021. The importance of Asian representation also impacted Jacob Batalon who played Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Ned as people started messaging him about what an inspiration he was to the community. Representation has proven to be very important in reaching millions of people who want to see a glimpse of themselves in the characters they see onscreen. With more Asian actors like Lana Condor making a name for themselves in Hollywood, this will give room for others from the Asian community. 

Lana Condor recently concluded Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy about a teenage girl who writes love letters to her crushes only for those letters to be accidentally sent out. She currently stars in the HBO Max film Moonshot, another romantic comedy with this one having a sci-fi twist. Co-starring with Riverdale’s Cole Sprouse, two college students sneak on a space shuttle to Mars to be reunited with their significant others. You can also keep your eyes open for Lana Condor in the upcoming Looney Tunes movie with John Cena. It doesn’t look like this up-and-coming actress or her Asian representation is going anywhere.

The films reminded young adult novel fans and romantic comedy enthusiasts why they love young love. It also made women and girls long for their past, present, or future Peter Kavinsky. Anna Cathcart Reprises Her Role As Kitty Covey In The To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Spinoff TV Show

Whether you adored or were very annoyed by the youngest Covey, Kitty (Anna Cathcart), there is no denying that she often stole the show. Kitty is just the right amount of sass, brutal honesty, and lovableness to make you want to watch her. Therefore, she was the most obvious choice for Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before spinoff TV show. Anna Cathcart returns as Kitty to get into more mischief and mayhem. 

The To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film series is one of Cathcart's biggest acting roles yet, but she has been acting for several years and appeared in other popular films and TV shows. Descendants fans may recognize Cathcart for playing Dizzy in Descendants 2 and Descendants 3. She also played Agent Olympia in the Odd Squad and Odd Squad: The Movie, and voiced Lop in the English version of the Star Wars: Visions short film series.

The Song-Covey girls love their romance, and now it’s Kitty’s turn for her own. Kitty spent the first two To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before films meddling in the romantic lives of her sisters, her neighbor, and her father. Luckily for Kitty, it worked out. Now she won’t just be meddling in romance, but having her own. To All the Boys: Always and Forever introduced Dae (Ho-Young Jeon), Kitty’s first boyfriend.

Fans met him at the beginning of the film during the Covey family trip to South Korea. Kitty and Dae then spent the rest of the movie navigating a long-distance romance. In the film, their biggest issue was him not being a Harry Potter fan. The logline for XO, Kitty reveals that Kitty will travel around the world to reunite with her long-distance boyfriend and then have to navigate the ups and downs of first love.

Now, we don’t know for sure if Dae is the boyfriend that Kitty is traveling for, but it seems likely, unless Kitty already dumped him and found another international boyfriend. We also aren’t sure if Kitty will be moving to another country to be with her boyfriend or just visiting, either way, this likely means that the show will introduce new Song family members.  It also may mean other actors could reprise their roles, such as John Corbett as Daniel Covey, and Sarayu Rao as Trina Rothschild.

XO, Kitty Has 10 Episodes In Season 1

XO, Kitty Season 1 will have 10 episodes. Each will run for about 30 minutes.  The To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before spinoff TV show is being advertised as a young adult series, putting it in the same realm as other popular Netflix shows like The Baby-Sitters Club and Julie and the Phantoms. Both of these series had nine or ten episodes in their first seasons that ran for about 30 minutes each.

XO, Kitty continues that pattern, and this may be the pattern going forward with Netflix’s young adult lineup. It works because it makes the seasons easy to binge, especially for a younger audience who may not want to spend all day watching hour-long episodes. 

Jenny Han Acts As An Executive Producer Of XO, Kitty 

Jenny Han, the author of the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before book series is once again taking an active role in the production of the franchise. She was an executive producer on all three of Netflix’s films, and she even had cameos in the movies, including in the final film, as Principal Cho. Han will take an even more active role behind the scenes in XO, Kitty. 

She will be an executive producer, co-showrunner, and she co-wrote the pilot. Han will share showrunner duties with Sascha Rothchild. Rothchild is an executive producer on The Baby-Sitters Club, and also held the same gig on GLOW and The Bold Type. Jenny Han wrote the pilot with Siobhan Vivian.

Netflix Hasn’t Announced The XO, Kitty Release Date

Since XO, Kitty is still in the early stages of development, and it hasn’t even begun filming yet, Netflix has not announced a release date. Because Netflix will likely want to release the TV show before everyone forgets about the Covey family, I suspect that the show will begin filming early 2022, with plans to release it in the summer or early fall of 2022. To me, releasing XO, Kitty in summer 2022 makes the most sense because who doesn’t love a summer romance?

At the latest, I would guess that Netflix releases XO, Kitty around Valentine’s Day in 2023. However, the only way I suspect there may be filming delays is if the cast has prior commitments or Jenny Han gets too busy with The Summer I Turned Pretty. I would be surprised if it isn’t released before the end of 2022. 

Netflix Released A Short Teaser Of XO, Kitty 

When Netflix announced that there would be a To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before spinoff TV show, they also released a short teaser video. The clip introducing XO, Kitty only really gives away the title and possible logo of the series. However, it being revealed through an email message may be a clue that Kitty’s versions of love letters include emails.

This makes sense, because Kitty isn’t as hopelessly romantic as Lara Jean, so physical letters may be too sappy for her. Kitty is also dating someone who lives in another country, so emails seem like a logical form of quick communication.

There is still a lot Netflix hasn’t told us about XO, Kitty, but from what we do know, I’m excited to see how the series plays out. Kitty is the perfect amount of spunky to carry a TV show. It’s one of the upcoming Netflix shows that we can’t wait to watch.  

Netflix’s popular To All the Boys trilogy came to an end earlier this year with the third movie. While it seemed like the beloved YA rom-coms based on the book series of the same name were going to be done, Netflix will be giving one of the trilogy’s characters, Kitty Song Covey, her own series. 

Anna Cathcart, who portrays Lara Jean’s younger sister Kitty in the To All the Boys trilogy, will be reprising her role in a new series offshoot, according to Deadline. Netflix has given the greenlight for the new YA series, called XO, Kitty, with a 10-episode order. The series will follow Kitty Song Covey as she moves halfway across the world for her long-distance boyfriend. Though just like her sister, she’ll figure out that relationships are not to be taken lightly. Netflix also uploaded a teaser on Twitter, previewing what's to come:

If it wasn’t for Kitty, the events of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before wouldn't have even happened. She was the one who mailed her sister’s letters that weren’t supposed to be seen in the first film. In the following two, she got close to her sister and was growing up. Now it seems like Kitty is doing her own thing. To All the Boys author Jenny Han and Sascha Rothchild of GLOW and The Baby-Sitters Club (also for Netflix) will serve as co-showrunners, and the two will executive produce XO, Kitty.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before stars Lana Condor as main character Lara Jean Covey, who wrote letters to her crushes as a girl only to have those letters mailed out by her sister by accident years later. Netflix heartthrob and The Fosters alum Noah Centineo plays one of Lara Jean’s crushes, Peter Kavinsky. The two fake a relationship, which soon turns into a real one. 

Fans watched as their relationship blossomed, but it wasn’t without some crumbling. With the third film this year, the two went their separate ways for college but still maintained their long-distance relationship. Now it looks like Kitty is following in her big sister’s footsteps. Kind of.

Besides To All the Boys, Anna Cathcart can be seen as Dizzy, the daughter of Cinderella’s stepsister Drizella in Disney Channel’s Descendants franchise. She is also the voice of Agent Olympia in PBS children’s series Odd Squad, appeared in Once Upon a Time as well as Disney Channel’s Spin and Fast Layne. She also contributed to the Disney+ animated anthology series Star Wars: Visions as a voice actress.

There is no news on when XO, Kitty is set to premiere on Netflix, nor who will be joining Anna Cathcart in the new series. Hopefully we’ll see appearances from To All the Boys characters, like Noah Centineo, Lana Condor and Janel Parish.

One of Netflix’s biggest runaway hits came in 2018 with To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. The adaptation of Jenny Han’s best selling YA novel ushered in a high-profile trilogy starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo as high school couple Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky, who are brought together by secret love letters. The story officially concluded earlier this year with LJ and Kavinsky getting ready to stay together long distance in college, but left open the question about whether they would truly be “always and forever”.

Fans of Netflix’s teen franchise who have lived through high school and college might be more skeptical of their fate. The high school sweetheart to staying together ratio does happen, but it's uncommon. Lana Condor shared her thoughts on if she thinks her iconic character would stay with Noah Centineo’s Kavinsky following the end of the trilogy. As she put it:

Long distance is not easy, especially when college opens a whole new world of opportunity outside one’s hometown, so Lana Condor is not betting on LJ and Peter to make it through another graduation as a couple. But of course, Always and Forever does leave things open ended, as she ultimately decides to go to school in New York. Meanwhile, her boyfriend stays on track with his plans to move to Northern California, where she had planned to join him before she changes her mind to benefit her own desires.

However, Lana Condor does still have hope for the couple from All The Boys. During her interview with Us Weekly, the 23-year-old actress spoke about what she imagines is next for them in more detail:

I know we’re talking about fictional characters here, but I think Lana Condor is dead on. It wouldn’t only be uncommon, but perhaps unfair to Lara Jean if her first and last boyfriend was Peter Kavinsky. We all grow through having different experiences, and college and one’s 20s are great times to understand what works best for us. Condor continued:

Wouldn’t that be perfect? I’d love to see Lana Condor’s vision come true, because the idea of this older and mature Lara Jean would be so much fun to see after following the character in high school. The actress wants to revisit the character years from now when she and Noah Centineo’s Peter have broken up, but somehow find each other again and fall in love again as adults once they’ve lived life apart. Okay, let’s be honest with ourselves – sometimes we like the cringe of teen movies.

Don’t get me wrong, some teen movies are classics and deserve the love they get, but others are just your typical teen movie – someone learning to grow up and accept themselves, or it’s them trying to find a relationship or even facing a bully in school.

Thankfully, these teen movies are some of the best that Netflix has to offer currently to their subscribers and trust me, there are plenty. From classics like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World to more recent hits like To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, these are some of the best teen movies on Netflix.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Trilogy

From 2018 through 2021, there was a trilogy which took over the internet – mainly, Noah Centineo did as the internet’s official boyfriend, and that was from To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Lara Jean once wrote five letters to the five loves of her life, but stored them away, never mailing them. However, her life changes when he sister mails them out accidentally, and all of her former crushes are revealed.

As someone who adores romantic comedies, this is hands down one of my favorite teen movies that Netflix has to offer, especially since there are three of them. Not only was the story fun to watch, the chemistry that Lana Condor and Noah Centineo had in all three movies really made their relationship believable, and when you have that, any movie can soar. Trust me, by the end, you’ll want your own Peter Kavinsky or John Ambrose.

Moxie (2021)

For one of the latest films, we take a look at Moxie. In this film, a teenage girl ends up starting a hardcore feminist movement at her high school when she stumbles upon riot grrrl memorabilia in her mother’s trunk.

Just from the premise, you can really tell this is a movie of the times, but it’s incredibly funny and tackles the politics of the film in a fun way. Moxie is actually directed by the legendary Amy Poehler (who also has a role in this film), so you just know that it’s going to be iconic in every way. Even so, the message behind this teen film really goes above and beyond and will make anyone watching want to stand up for what they believe in.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010)

I feel like when most people think of a teen film, this is one of the first ones which pops up. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, based on the graphic novel of the same name, follows the titular character, Scott Pilgrim, who is a musician and must win a competition in order to get a record deal and battle the seven evil exes of his newest girlfriend, Ramona Flowers.

This film has developed a strong cult following since its release, for many reasons. The comedy is top-notch, the story is a lot of fun, and the cast list is absolutely amazing, from actors like Michael Cera and Chris Evans to actresses like Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza, they are everywhere in Scott Pilgrim. It’s a real underdog teen movie that knocks the socks off of any normal high school film. Definitely one of the best.

The Prom (2020)

Musicals have sort of been my comfort genre for a long time, so when I heard that The Prom was going to become a new movie on Netflix, I was so excited. The Prom, adapted from the Broadway musical of the same name, tells the story of the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community when a young girl just wants to take her girlfriend to prom, but the school board won’t allow it.

If you want to talk about musical numbers, The Prom has everything you could dream of, from amazing colors to awesome dance numbers to beautiful voices. Ryan Murphy, who knows his way around a musical, considering he created Glee, does everything he can to truly make this a musical to remember. The Prom cast is amazing as well, with big-time actors like Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, and so many others signing on. If you love musicals, check this one out.

All The Bright Places (2020)

Oof. That’s all I’ll say about this film at first. All The Bright Places, based on the book of the same name and starring Elle Fanning and Justice Smith, tells the story of two young teenagers who are both dealing with their own issues, one with survivors' guilt and the other being obsessed with death. They dream of leaving their dreary Indiana town behind and want to explore the world.

The reason I say ‘oof’ is not because the film is bad, by any means. If anything, this is one of the most emotional teen films you will watch. While most of these are great comedies, sometimes we all need a good cry, and that’s what All The Bright Places provides for us – a good cry so we can move on with our day. The acting is amazing from these two young actors, and the story itself will touch anyone’s heart.

What A Girl Wants (2003)

Now, let us move back into something a bit older, and take a look at a movie that starred the one-time queen of teen comedies, Amanda Bynes. In What a Girl Wants, Bynes plays Daphne, whose mother once fell in love with an aristocratic Englishman in her youth, but couldn’t be with him due to family issues as well as social pressures, and because of this, it causes a whirlwind of lies and truths to be revealed.

Is the story life-changing? Of course not, as it's definitely something that you've seen before in so many other comedies. But, if you’re looking for that classic teen comedy that you remember from your childhood, there’s nowhere further to look than this. We have the 2000s-era outfits and plenty of teenage humor, along with a great cast. It’s certainly one of my nostalgic favorites.

Let It Snow (2019)

Who says you can’t watch a Christmas movie right now? Let It Snow, based on the popular young adult novel of the same name, goes over three separate storylines that all take place around the holidays, creating hijinks, romance, friendships, and drama all along the way.

While this does take place during the holidays, I believe that this is a movie you can really watch at any point during the year. The stories themselves are cute and full of life, while the acting is actually surprisingly good for a teen movie, with big stars like The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Kiernan Shipka and the famous Joan Cusack, along with so many others. Plus, one of the writers of the original book was John Green, who was known for amazing novels like The Fault in Our Stars and Looking for Alaska – you know it’s going to be a good story.

The Last Summer (2019)

For anyone who just recently graduated high school, this is definitely for you. The Last Summer talks about a group of friends from high school, trying to navigate their personal and social lives with all their issues and drama while also trying to enjoy their last summer before they all head off to college.

There’s just something about these movies that have multiple different storylines which always get me interested. I love that they somehow find a way to connect everything near the end, and it serves as a bittersweet moment when they all end up heading off to college, knowing that the world will forever be changed but they will always have their memories, even if they grow apart. Plus, the cast list is great, with Riverdale’s K.J. Apa taking the lead, Teen Beach Movie's Maia Mitchell, Detroit’s Jacob Latimore, and so many others.

Work It (2020)

I can’t have a teen list and not put a dance movie on there. Work It, a Netflix original film, tells the story of Quinn Ackerman, who lies about being on a dance team to get into the college of her dreams when her accolades aren’t enough, and must win a competition with said dance team to somehow get into her school.

First off, let me just say that Sabrina Carpenter and Jordan Fisher are fantastic in Work It. Their chemistry is amazing and what makes it even better is that they are actually seriously talented, with some awesome dance moves and singing voices. Liza Koshy is even great, as well, in one of her first big film roles since becoming a big YouTube star. The story itself is about as generic as you can expect from a teen movie, but that makes it all that more fun. Plus, who doesn’t adore some good dance sequences? They take it to another level in Work It.

Good Burger (1997)

“Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?”

When I tell you this was the anthem of '90s kids everywhere, I mean it. I can’t even recall how many times my brother and I have said this to each other. Good Burger is an iconic teen movie, starring a young Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, who are employees at said Good Burger restaurant, trying to somehow keep it alive when other burger joints start to open up nearby.

If you want to talk about awesome chemistry, this is it. Kenan and Kel were known for a good reason, and that’s because their comedic timing is perfect, and can make this teen movie enjoyable for both older kids, younger kids, and their parents so they can watch it at the same time. If you’re not craving some type of burger by the end of watching this film, you’re doing it wrong.

I think we can all collectively agree that teen movies, while sometimes cringy, can sometimes be awesome and ones that we all need to watch. I wonder if there will be any new teen films in the 2021 movies. And, if there are, let’s all hope they are as iconic as these.

So here’s the thing: Lana Condor and Noah Centineo were seriously adorable together in the To All the Boys movies. Their chemistry really shines through the Netflix franchise, from beginning right up to the end. What they experienced together with the rom-com phenomenon is prime breeding ground for a real life romance, but they intentionally decided to remain professional early on and decide not to date.

Lana Condor recently recalled that right before filming the first movie To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (which became an overnight hit for its young stars), she went to a hot yoga class and grabbed pizza with Noah Centineo when she realized sparks could seriously fly between them if she didn’t set boundaries. Then and there, she told the actor that it "was not going to happen" between them, and he agreed. Now that they’ve wrapped the trilogy, Condor stands by their no-dating pact. As she told ET:

When the two actors initially made the first film, they had no idea the To All The Boys movies would become as popular as they are. Their professional relationship has thrived four years since Lana Condor drew that line, and she believes the movie is better for it. The odds of them maintaining their relationship for all that time may have been difficult, and there would have been a lot more focus on their personal relationships than the movies. Condor continued:

When a couple of actors like Lana Condor and Noah Centineo get cast in a movie series like All The Boys, it seems as though it would be easy to fall in love. The two were already placed in romantic situations together, and they clearly have genuine chemistry off screen. Also, in terms of their lives, both of them were going through an insane change, during which they were both in the process of becoming major stars. It’s exactly what happened to Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, or High School Musical’s Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens and The Amazing Spider-Man’s Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

They’d also be spending time in interviews navigating relationship questions. But instead they get to make a case for not dating your co-stars. Sure, there’s a cute aspect to the idea from the outside looking in but, when it comes down to it, acting is a job and, when two actors get together in real life (especially under contract), it can cause a lot of heartache and drama. Noah Centineo echoed Condor’s perspective with these words:

Centineo and Condor sound like they have a really great friendship with one another, which will likely remain for years to come. And if they had dated in an alternate universe, as Condor called it, we may not have treasured the final chapter Always And Forever as deeply.

I Still Love You's Jordan Fisher. So, now that Netflix has closed the book (or, rather, sealed the letter) on this franchise, what's the To All The Boys I Loved Before cast doing next? Let's find out!

Lana Condor (Lara Jean Covey)

As Lara Jean Covey, the lovelorn high schooler who became Peter Kavinsky's fake girlfriend, then his real one, Lana Condor found her star-making role as the romantic protagonist in Netflix's To All the Boys trilogy. Away from starring in this streaming franchise, the young actress had notable supporting roles in X-Men: Apocalypse, Patriots Day, Lifetime's High School Lover, and Alita: Battle Angel. Additionally, Condor starred in Syfy's short-lived Deadly Class and the ensemble comedy, Summer Night. Furthermore, she did voice work in Rilakkuma and Kaoru and BoJack Horseman's final season. Outside of acting, Condor started a prominent YouTube channel last February.

Next, Lana Condor will star in Netflix's limited series, Boo Bitch. She'll also serve as an executive producer. Also, Condor is headlining Girls Night and HBO Max's Moonshot.

Noah Centineo (Peter Kavinsky)

In the role of Peter Kavinsky, a popular kid who forms a fake relationship with Lara Jean Covey, only to develop real feelings, Noah Centineo stole a lot of hearts with his lovey-dovey romantic lead in the To All The Boys trilogy. Outside of this film series, Centineo is known for his starring roles in two other Netflix movies, Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, and The Perfect Date. He also appeared in Disney Channel's How to Build a Better Boy, the final three seasons of Freeform's The Fosters, Disney Channel's Austin & Ally, and Hulu's T@gged. His other film credits include Charlie's Angels (2019), Can't Take It Back, Swiped, and SPF-18. Outside of acting, Centineo served as a writer and producer for #TheAssignment. He also directed ARTY's "Save Me Tonight" music video.

Next, Noah Centineo stars in Jackie Chan's The Diary. He's also slated to play He-Man in Masters of the Universe and Atom Smasher in DC's Black Adam. Additionally, it was recently announced that Centineo will appear in Netflix's still-untitled GameStop drama.

John Corbett (Dr. Daniel Covey)

Playing the part of Dr. Daniel Covey, the widowed father of Margot, Lara Jean, and Kitty, John Corbett provided a dutifully caring paternal figure. Outside of this film series, Corbett is known as the romantic lead in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and its 2016 sequel. Additionally, on TV, the actor starred in CBS's Northern Exposure and Showtime's The United States of Tara. Furthermore, Corbett had recurring roles in Sex and the City, Parenthood, and Undone, while also starring in FX's short-lived Lucky and Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll. His other film credits include Tombstone, Serendipity, Raising Helen, Street Kings, Ramona and Beezus, I Hate Valentine's Day, The Boy Next Door, and Sex and the City 2. Outside of acting, Corbett is also a musician and released two country albums, 2006's John Corbett and 2013's Leaving Nothin' Behind.

Next, John Corbett will co-star in ABC's Rebel, which is set to premiere on April 8th.

Madeleine Arthur (Christine Donati)

As Christine Donati, Lara Jean's best friend, Madeleine Arthur plays a supportive free spirit in the franchise. Outside of this series, Arthur is notably known for her roles in Color Out of Space, Big Eyes, and ABC's The Family. Additionally, she appears in The Killing, The Tomorrow People, Supernatural, Legends of Tomorrow, The X-Files, The Magicians, R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour, and TNT's Snowpiercer. Next, Arthur is expected to star in the indie drama, Tell Me Why I Don't Like Mondays.

Israel Broussard (Josh)

In the role of Josh Sanderson, Lara Jean's childhood friend and potential love interest, Israel Broussard played a prominent part in To All The Boys I Loved Before, but his character was missing from the sequels. Broussard is known for Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U. His other notable film credits include The Bling Ring, Flipped, Earth to Echo, and The Chaperone. Additionally, Broussard starred in Perfect High and guest-starred in Sons of Anarchy and Fear the Walking Dead. He also appeared in M83's "Claudia Lewis" music video. Following To All The Boys I Loved Before's Netflix debut, Broussard drew controversy when insensitive tweets resurfaced online. He apologized, though this media firestorm could be the reason for the actor's absence in the sequels.

Recently, Israel Broussard was seen in Hulu's Into the Dark and this month's Fear of Rain. His next project isn't known, though Happy Death Day 3 could be happening soon.

Jordan Fisher (John Ambrose McClaren)

Playing the part of John Ambrose McClaren, Lara Jean's childhood friend and potential love interest, Jordan Fisher had a starring role in To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. Most notably, from 2016-2017, Fisher appeared in Broadway's production of Hamilton. Starting in 2020, he played the title character in Dear Evan Hansen. Also, Fisher won Dancing with the Stars' 25th season and hosted 2018's Dancing with the Stars: Juniors. His other acting credits include The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Liv and Maddie, Teen Beach Movie 1 and 2, Grease Live, Teen Wolf, iCarly, and Rent Live.

Fisher appeared in Netflix's Work It and Quibi's Royalties. He also does voice work for She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and Archibald's Next Big Thing. Next, the actor stars in Hello, Goodbye, and Everything In Between, where he also serves as an executive producer.

Anna Cathcart (Kitty Covey)

As Kitty, the youngest Covey daughter who sent out all of Lara Jean's secretive letters, Anna Cathcart played a crucial part in establishing the core fake-then-serious relationship in the movies. Outside of this franchise, Cathcart starred in PBS Kids' Odd Squad Season 2, as well as Odd Squad: The Movie, OddTube, and Odd Squad: World Turned Odd. She also appeared in Disney Channel's Descendants 2 and 3. Additionally, Cathcart played the title role in Zoe Valentine. The child actress reprised this character for Spring Breakaway. Her other TV credits include Once Upon a Time, Fast Layne, and Dino Dana. Additionally, Cathcart hosted the web series, Letters To.

Janel Parrish (Margot Covey)

In the role of Margot, Lara Jean and Kitty's older sister, Janel Parrish played a key character in To All The Boys I Loved Before, and had a supporting part in the sequels. Sarayu Blue (Trina Rothschild)

Playing the part of Trina Rothschild, the next-door neighbor who begins a relationship with Dr. Covey, Sarayu Blue, also known as Sarayu Rao, adopted a key character. Most notably, Blue is known for her starring role in NBC's I Feel Bad. She was also in the main cast for The CW's short-lived No Tomorrow. Some of her other television credits include Sons of Tucson, Monday Mornings, NCIS: Los Angeles, Medical Police, The Unicorn, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Additionally, on the big screen, Blue is best known for her supporting turn in Blockers. The actress also makes appearances in Dealin' with Idiots, Lions for Lambs, and November's Happiest Season.

Ross Butler (Trevor Pike)

As Trevor Pike, Peter and Lara Jean's childhood friend, Ross Butler played a prominent supporting character in To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, andcan also briefly be seen in To All The Boys: Always and Forever. Most notably, Butler was known for his main role on Netflix's 13 Reasons Why. The film and television actor can also be seen in Disney Channel's K.C. Undercover, Teen Beach 2, Riverdale, Perfect High, The Internship, Chasing Life, Teen Wolf, and Shazam!, as well as the music videos for Steve Aoki's "Waste It On Me" and Juice Wild's "Graduation."

Butler was set to star in Quibi's Swimming with Sharks, though the short-form show's status is unknown after the company folded. Next, Butler will be heard in Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon, which arrives in theaters and on Disney+ on March 5th. Additionally, the actor will lend his voice to Netflix's Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.

Emilija Baranac (Genevieve Mitchell)

In the role of Genevieve Mitchell, Peter Kavinsky's popular ex-girlfriend, Emilija Baranac played a preppy personality in the trilogy. Most notably, Baranac is known for her prominent part in The CW's Riverdale Season 2. The actress/model can also be seen in Beyond, Supernatural, and Charmed. Additionally, Baranac starred in a pair of Lifetime movies, Tempting Fate and Deadly Second Chances.

Recently, Emilijia Baranac reprised her role as Heidi in The CW's Charmed. Following her performance in To All The Boys: Always and Forever, the actress will star in There's Someone Inside Your House. She's also expected to appear in the short film, Dead End.

Trezzo Mahoro (Lucas Krapf)

Playing the part of Lucas Krapf, Lara Jean's former crush-turned-close friend, Trezzo Mahoro was seen as a caring and supportive confidant in all three To All The Boys movies. Some of his other film credits include Dragged Across Concrete, 2016's Adventures in Babysitting, and A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish. Also, on television, Mahoro appeared in Van Helsing, The Magicians, The X-Files, Motive, and iZombie.

This weekend marked the end of an era for Netflix. Lana Condor and Noah Centineo have officially told Jenny Han’s trilogy of All The Boys books. By the end of the movies, LJ and Kavinsky are all packed up for college, which means they’ve leveled out of their young adult roots. There will certainly be more young romances to come after To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, but what should they be?

Luckily, we’ve browsed the section neighboring Han’s work and have some solid ideas of more YA books that we’d like to see Netflix adapt next for streaming given the hollow hole All The Boys left in our hearts. Check these out:

Words In Deep Blue (Cath Crowley)

To All The Boys all starts with love letters, and Cath Crowley’s Words in Deep Blue is too. The 2017 novel is a sweet story about Rachel Sweetie, who worked with her best friend and secret crush Henry Jones in his family’s bookshop until she had to move away. The day before she left, Rachel tucks a love letter into his favorite book hoping for him to reciprocate. Years later, Rachel has to return to town and her old job at the bookshop after facing a tragedy. Words in Deep Blue becomes an intense, but lovely romance that will make To All The Boys fans swoon.

Frankly In Love (David Yoon)

Another worthy follow-up would be an adaptation of David Yoon’s 2019 book, Frankly In Love. The YA novel follows Frank Li, a Korean-American high school senior who has parents who expect him to date Korean. This poses a conflict for Frank when he falls for a white teen named Brit Means. That’s when he turns to his family friend Joy Song, who is dealing with a similar situation. Frank and Joy create a dating scheme to throw their parents off their trail, but the situation proves confusing.

Fangirl (Rainbow Rowell)

One of the most adorable teen books to come within the past decade was Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl. The novel centers on twins Cath and Wren, who grew up obsessing over the Simon Snow series (which is kind of like Harry Potter). The character helped the twins cope with her mother leaving, but Wren has grown out of the Simon Snow fandom and does not want to be roommates with her twin. This leaves Cath alone with her Simon Snow fan fiction and without her sister by her side. Fangirl is a great coming-of-age story that would translate to a Netflix teen romance beautifully.

My So-Called Bollywood Life (Nisha Sharma)

Nisha Sharma’s My So-Called Bollywood Life could be another perfect follow-up for All The Boys. The 2018 novel is about a teen named Winnie who has dreams to meet the love of her life before her 18th birthday and she thinks she found him in her longtime boyfriend, Raj. However, when she comes back from her summer film camp, she finds out that he has been cheating on her and then he nabs her place on the chair of the student film festival. Winnie looks up to Bollywood movies when it comes to her love life, so when she meets someone off her intended script it changes everything for her.

A Pho Love Story (Loan Li)

A new YA title straight off the presses is Loan Le’s A Pho Love Story, about Bao Nguyen, a teen boy who works at his parent’s pho restaurant, and Linh Mai, a teen girl who works at her parent’s pho restaurant. Their families have been at odds for years since their places are in direct competition with each other. When Bao and Linh unexpectedly cross paths, they have instant chemistry and obviously a lot in common, but family politics get in the way. A Vietnamese-American love story about pho? Need I say more? Love & Gelato (Jenna Evans Welch)

Something we loved about All The Boys: Always and Forever was how the franchise decided to globetrot to Korea. In teen romances, we love to travel and Jenna Evans Welch’s Love & Gelato series allows its audience to do just that. The first book of three (No. 2 is called Love & Luck and No. 3 is Love & Olives) is about Lina, who is spending the summer in Tuscany, Italy to get to know her estranged father after losing her mother. It’s there where she finds unexpected love and inspiration.

You Have A Match (Emma Lord)

Oh hey, and Netflix... can we also interest you in another early 2021 bestseller, Emma Lord’s You Have A Match? The YA story is about Abby, who signs up for a DNA service in the interest of getting attention from her secret crush, but finds out that she actually has an older sister she never knew about. The long-lost sisters decide to meet each other at summer camp amidst her crush also being involved in the summer camp and some more secrets unraveling between her parents.

Red, White & Royal Blue (Casey McQuiston)

One recent favorite among the YA romance section is Red, White & Royal Blue, a novel about America’s first son, who falls in love with the Prince of Wales. Juicy, right? U.S. “royal” Alex has a secret beef with Prince Henry that they must cover up with a public friendship. The fake friends spark a secret and genuine romance that has built a swooning fanbase that would press play on a movie adaptation the second it came out. If.

Anyone else want to sit around and curl next to one of these books now? Obviously, we’ll be rewatching the entire All The Boys trilogy soon enough, but for the time being there’s a whole bunch of titles we’ll be looking to. Hopefully Netflix takes note and produces more sweet adaptations of our favorite YA novels.

This past week, All The Boys fans said goodbye to Lana Condor's Lara Jean after a sweet trilogy that followed the teen’s growth into first love and forging her path after high school. The ending to LJ’s story and her continued relationship with Noah Centineo’s Peter Kavinsky went the way of the hopeless romantic, having the couple pledging to send each other love letters as they packed their bags to colleges across the country from each other.

Although the pair had planned to attend the same college, Lara Jean did not get into Stanford like Kavinsky. This led to LJ initially choosing a neighboring Northern California school to her boyfriend, before ultimately deciding to go to NYU for herself after falling in love with what the campus had to offer. All The Boys star Lana Condor shared her thoughts on the franchise’s finale to EW:

Although it's easy (and fun) for us to get wrapped in the love story between Noah Centineo and Lana Condor’s characters, the last shot in the movie does make it all about Lara Jean and her personal journey. And that’s what it’s been about the whole time, hasn’t it? All The Boys: Always and Forever does place the focus on LJ’s college plan with Peter but, in the end, she chooses herself and paves her own future. And, she maintained her relationship with him. It goes to show that focusing on your own growth can turn into happily ever after. Condor also said this about Lara Jean:

There it is right there. That’s why the All The Boys: Always and Forever ending lands. It places Lara Jean’s development as a character over its romance, whilst leaving room for the two to coexist. The conclusion was already written in Jenny Han’s books and, now, audiences of the Netflix movies got to see it play out too! It’s not easy to ground a story about high school love over three movies, but the series’ focus on its central lead helped those final moments hit the right emotional notes.

The All The Boys movies completely changed the lives of Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, who are now major names in Hollywood following their breakout success. Centineo reached hearthrob status not long after All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’s release, recently recalling a time when he was followed home after some fans tracked his flight.

Can you believe it? The final page has now been written for Lara Jean in her high school years after a whirlwind of a romance trilogy originally penned in Jenny Han’s famed YA series of books. Lana Condor and Noah Centineo had a sweet sendoff for their breakout roles in All The Boys: Always and Forever ending and it’s time for us to talk it through. Three years following the first movie drawing cupid’s arrow, how did the high school romance leave things off for Lara Jean and Kavinsky?

The third installment revolved around the couple making college plans as graduation approached. Following P.S. I Still Love You’s shakeup in the form of Jordan Fisher’s charming John Ambrose, Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky are back together for the long haul and planning to go to Stanford together until LJ finds out she has been rejected from the Northern California university. The news forces her to explore other options including going to UC Berkeley to be an hour out from Kavinsky or moving to New York to attend NYU, which she unexpectedly falls in love with. Let’s get into the ending’s specifics:

What Happened At The End Of All The Boys: Always And Forever

After much internal turmoil, Lara Jean makes the right decision for her personal future and decides to go to NYU. It’s not an easy decision for Peter to stomach at first, because it means the couple will be doing long distance instead of attending college together as they had intended. LJ and Peter are stepping on eggshells on Prom night, but she still feels obligated to initiate their first time having sex, feeling insecure that the couple had yet to take that step. Peter stops things to have a conversation with Lara Jean, that turns into an argument between them that ends with the two contemplating breaking up.

Due to the couple’s turmoil, Peter skips out of being the wedding date on the special day of Lara Jean’s father. Later that night, LJ has a heart-to-heart with her sister, who shows her the first letter she ever wrote about Peter. The couple reconcile with a contract that calls back to the situation that started it all in 2018’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before when they decided to initiate a fake relationship so Peter can make his ex jealous. It serves as a reminder of the time they initially fell in love. The movie suggests that the couple do have sex together before going in different directions for college, with intentions to write love letters to one another during long distance.

Will Lara Jean And Peter Kavinsky Really Stay Together?

The ending of All The Boys is a hopeful one, but certainly leaves some questions unresolved, such as if the couple will actually stay together once they get settled into attending university and the college scene catches their eyes. During Lara Jean’s voiceover at the end of the film, she addresses the elephant in the room about whether they can survive four years of college physically without one another. She basically says she has no idea if it will last, but they are “not like those other couples,” and they have love letters on their side.

Considering the Jenny Han books end just about the same way, it's primarily up to the audience to decide for themselves if LJ and Kavinsky can navigate being in a long distance relationship. The All The Boys movies really relies on the audience’s capacity to hold onto the hopeless romantic aspect of its storyline. Thematically, the idea of their relationship starting with love letters and it needing to stay together with love letters is the poetic conclusion that is as perfect of a conclusion the story could tell to keep the couple together by the end.

What About All The Other Boys?

Although To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before begins with five private letters that LJ’s sister sends out to the boys she had crushes on at different points in her life, Always and Forever is only about one boy, and that’s Noah Centineo’s Peter. The only decision Lara Jean has to make has to do with which vicinity she will continue her relationship with him. But, what about all the other boys in All The Boys? Of course the main other boy fans grew attached to in the 2020 sequel P.S. I Love You was Jordan Fisher’s John Ambrose, who is completely absent in Always and Forever.

The piano-playing charmer was an option that LJ explored in the sequel, but ended to be a dead end when their kiss in the snow didn’t create the sparks they had hoped. What the movie does tell you that the book does shed light on is John Ambrose does get himself a girlfriend in Always and Forever – her name is Dipti and they meet each other in Model UN. With three boys left, we have Josh Sanderson, Lucas James and Kenny Donati. Josh was the boyfriend of her older sister in the first movie and he disappeared after the first movie, probably for the better because: awkward! Lucas James grew up to be LJ’s gay best friend and Kenny’s letter got lost in the mail.

Is All The Boys A Satisfying Love Story?

So just about every loose end has been tied except for one. Was the ending of the All The Boys movie worthwhile? That’ll be up to your own opinion on the series itself, but in order to answer that question, I think it’s best to go back to the beginning. At its core, Lara Jean’s story arc is about being an introverted, introspective type who writes letters about her crushes instead of telling them how she feels. When the letters get out, it allows Lara Jean to confront her feelings in the real world and get some experience with boys. Lara Jean ends up building a real relationship with someone dearly important to her by the end of the movies and truly branches out.

Always and Forever has LJ imagining getting married, buying a house and having kids with Peter, but looking on the side of probability Peter won’t likely be her first and last love. And that’s okay. The final movie has the young woman choosing for herself to go to the college of her choice. While Peter is devoted to her now, we don’t completely know what their fates will be. From this perspective, I’d say for what All The Boys is, it’s a satisfying conclusion to Lara Jean’s experience finding love for the first time. After years of movies, the final installment in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film series is here. To All the Boys: Always and Forever is the third film in the series, and features Lana Condor’s Lara Jean and Noah Centineo’s Peter as they get ready to head to college. After some complications arise, Lara Jean must figure out what she really wants for her future.

Lara Jean Covey and Peter Kavinsky’s romance fired up the YA fan in all of us with the first two films, which led to both actors becoming famous overnight (which apparently was a huge adjustment that neither of them could prepare for). After the release of the first film in 2018, Noah Centineo’s social media follower count went from 300,000 to 11 million in just one week (and he had a pretty terrifying fan encounter). Now we get to watch how it all ends for Lara Jean and Peter in To All the Boys: Always and Forever.

If you're trying to decide how to spend your Valentine’s weekend, To All the Boys: Always and Forever just debuted on Netflix today, and critics have already started to post their reviews for the film.

CinemaBlend’s own Sarah El-Mahmoud rated the film three out of five stars. She applauds the genuine chemistry between Lana Condor and Noah Centineo and the way Always and Forever ties up all of the narratives from the franchise. She says:

Kate Erbland from IndieWire remarks on the overstuffed nature of the film, saying that “There’s just too much here,” but admits that To All the Boys: Always and Forever still keeps the audience invested in the lead pair of actors. She comments on the franchise as a whole, saying:

Peter Debruge of Variety was impressed by the development of the supporting cast, such as Janel Parrish, Anna Cathcart, and Sarayu Blue, as well as the growth of the main couple. He also noted:

Mary Sollosi of Entertainment Weekly was not very impressed with To All The Boys: Always And Forever. She notes that the film doesn’t really know what to do with the main couple now that they are firmly, well, a couple. Mary comments that the film reduces each of the main actors to their quirks, “as if to remind its viewers that these are the characters they loved once before, rather than trying to make anyone love them at this moment in their lives.” They go on to say:

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before premiered on Netflix in 2018 and quickly became a hit with rom-com fans and fans of teen comedies. The sweet story of Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavinsky's (Noah Centineo) romance awoke the YA fan in all of us. Netflix, knowing a hit when it sees one, began working on the next two films in the series, To All The Boys: P.S I Still Love You and To All The Boys: Always and Forever.

To All The Boys: P.S I Still Love You premiered in 2020, and To All The Boys: Always and Forever premieres February 12, 2021. Always and Forever is slated to be the final To All The Boys movie for Netflix. Viewers will get to watch how it all ends for Lara Jean and Peter. Before Always and Forever premieres, let’s look at some key things to remember from the first two films.

Lara Jean Wrote Five Letters For Five Guys In To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

Lara Jean has a habit of writing a love letter every time that she falls in love. Over her sixteen years on earth, she’s written love letters to five guys, including Peter--her first kiss. However, the most important letter (at this time) was to Josh Sanderson (Israel Broussard), one of her best friends and older sister Margot's (Janel Parrish) boyfriend.

Lara Jean fell in love with Josh before he started dating Margot. Her love for him grew over the years, but once Josh started dating Margot, he became off-limits romantically. Lara Jean’s younger sister Kitty (Anna Cathcart) decides to send all the letters in hope of getting Lara Jean a boyfriend, but this causes some major issues between Josh and Lara Jean. Now that he knows her feelings for him, things are a bit awkward between them.

Peter And Lara Jean’s Romance Started Off Fake In To All The Boys I've Loved Before

Peter is the reason that Lara Jean first discovers that all her letters have been sent out. He confronts her about them, and then Josh shows up carrying his letter. Lara Jean kisses Peter so Josh will leave before they can discuss the letter. The kiss sparks an idea in Peter’s head. He wants to make his ex-girlfriend Gen (Emilija Baranac) jealous and Lara Jean needs to keep Josh away from her, so Peter suggests they fake a romance.

This new fake romance comes with a set of rules, including no kissing, a future ski-trip, and love letters from Peter.

Peter’s Relationship With Ex-Girlfriend Gen Caused Trouble In His Romance With Lara Jean

Despite being broken up, Gen still holds a special place in Peter’s heart. She was his first everything, except maybe kiss. This presents a constant issue for Lara Jean and Peter’s relationship. In To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, Peter starts his fake romance with Lara Jean with the intention of having it help him get Gen back. Therefore, Lara Jean is confused about Peter’s feelings for her. In the second movie, Peter continues to have a friendship with Gen, despite Lara Jean being his girlfriend.

He also doesn’t tell Lara Jean everything going on with Gen and him. This creates some distrust, insecurity, and miscommunication in Peter and Lara Jean’s relationship. To All The Boys: P.S I Still Love You seemed to offer some resolution to the Gen, Peter, and Lara Jean drama. Lara Jean admitted that she was the one being obsessed with Peter’s past with Gen, not him.

Gen and Lara Jean also seemed to have a moment of understanding and forgiveness towards the end of the film. This may mean the Gen, Lara Jean, and Peter drama is not an issue in To All the Boys: Always and Forever.

John Ambrose Tried To Sweep Lara Jean Off Her Feet In To All The Boys 2

Another problem in Lara Jean and Peter’s romance was other letter recipient John Ambrose (Jordan Fisher). In To All the Boys: P.S I Still Love You, John Ambrose and Lara Jean end up volunteering at the same senior residential home, Belleview. Being together, Lara Jean starts to remember why she liked John Ambrose so much when they were younger, and wonders if he may be the boy for her.

However, they share a kiss at the end of P.S I Still Love You and Lara Jean goes running back to Peter. Slight book spoiler coming up… John Ambrose is barely in Jenny Han’s third book in the To All the Boys series. He makes a brief appearance but nothing significant, except giving Team John fans hope that Lara Jean and he will end up at college together at some point in the next four years. So it’s unlikely that John Ambrose will be in the third film. He may only appear if Lara Jean is still volunteering at Belleview. In the book, he didn’t volunteer there. He was Stormy's (Holland Taylor) grandson and that was his connection to Belleview.

We’ll have to wait to see if To All the Boys: Always and Forever gives John Ambrose a cameo appearance, keeps him out of Always and Forever, or makes his part bigger in the final film. The second and third films were filmed together, so there is a chance that director Michael Fimognari utilized having Jordan Fisher already on set.

Lara Jean’s Dad Began A Relationship With Neighbor Trina Rothschild In To All The Boys 2

Lara Jean’s dad (John Corbett)’s crush on new neighbor Trina Rothschild (Sarayu Blue) was a brief point in To All the Boys: P.S I Still Love You but it became a main part in the third To All the Boys book. Their relationship became much more serious and Margot wasn’t happy about it. From the To All the Boys 3 trailer, we can see a slight spoiler in it that shows it keeps a major storyline about Trina and Dr. Covey from the Always and Forever book. This means their relationship should play a bigger role in the new movie.

Peter Discussed His Absent Father In To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

Peter discussed in the first To All the Boys film that his father decided to leave the family a few years ago. He now has a new family that he treats better. Peter’s father and his parent’s divorce was only briefly mentioned in P.S I Still Love You, but another slight book spoiler, Peter’s father’s absence is a big component of the third To All the Boys book. It should play a significant role in To All The Boys: Always and Forever too.

Peter And Lara Jean Were Still In The Early Stages Of Their Relationship By The End Of To All The Boys 2

The timeline between the first two films suggests that they happened anywhere from a few weeks to a few months apart. However, To All the Boys: Always and Forever takes place in Lara Jean and Peter’s senior year. The first film starts off at the beginning of junior year, which means Lara Jean and Peter have been dating about a year or longer in the third film. Their relationship is very much established. To All the Boys: P.S I Still Love You ended with Lara Jean saying that this was just the beginning of her story with Peter, and with them very much happy and in love.

To All the Boys: Always and Forever deals a lot with what post-high school life looks like for Peter and Lara Jean as a couple and as individuals.

Lana Condor became a household name at the age of 21 when the first All The Boys I’ve Loved Before hit the streaming service and turned into a massive hit. Ahead of the premiere of the third movie, Condor talked to Self about blowing up in Hollywood so fast and brightly:

Just following the making of the first To All The Boys movie, Condor went right into the action series Deadly Class and found a role in Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, but it was too much for her to deal with all at once. The actress suffered some mental health struggles right after becoming a hugely successful new star that she wasn’t expecting. She felt some pressure to take on multiple opportunities, and it became an unexpectedly dark time for her. Condor continued:

Lana Condor has since also had honest conversations with her parents, who suggested that she slow down after being “clearly unhappy” from taking on so much at once. She was living a completely different life than she ever had before, previously known only as Jubilee on X-Men: Apocalypse, which was her first film role ever. She said she had been hesitant to open up about her struggles before, believing that people would minimize it as “champagne problems” since she has found success. But it’s a reminder to anyone taking on a lot of responsibility at a time that we can only handle so much.

Lana Condor almost tried to take on more when she auditioned for Star Wars: The Last Jedi to play Rose Tico, a part that went to Kelly Marie Tran. Condor was down to the last couple people before the role went to Tran, but she may be saying good riddance to that. The Star Wars role dealt with an onslaught of online hate that led to her to quit social media. Either way, Condor has since gained some perspective on working in Hollywood, recently moving up to Seattle to get away from the Los Angeles hustle and bustle. She’ll be starring and executive producing a comedy series for Netflix next.

As Valentine’s Day begins to make its way around the corner quicker than anyone imagined (Wasn’t it literally just the beginning of 2021?!), that means romantic movies are coming back in full swing for viewing. From heart-breakers like Five Feet Apart and The Fault in Our Stars to cute recent ones like To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, the teen romance film is a different genre of its own, one that deserves to be appreciated. And, why not in this most lovely time of year? While we could go into films from the '90s and '80s, those movies deserve a list of their own, so these are the best teen romance films of the last twenty years.

The Fault In Our Stars (Rental)

Man, this movie had me and my mom sobbing, and she’s hard to make cry!

Arguably one of the saddest teen romance films of, possibly, all time, is the John Green classic. The Fault In Our Stars talks about the story of Hazel and Augustus, two teenagers who happen to fall for each other at a support group – oh, and who also have cancer. While Hazel isn’t that into the idea of finding someone, at first, due to her condition, they slowly begin to fall for one another, and then dive right into love.

I won’t talk about what happens in the end because my eyes are already watering, but I’d say this is one of the best teen romance films out there that really competes with the big boys like The Notebook or Love, Actually. It’s not just about two teenagers falling in love. It holds serious storylines and themes about life, living it to the fullest, and acceptance of the great beyond and what comes later. It’s a heavy film about teenagers falling in love – but that’s what makes it so good. Plus, the stars do a fantastic job.

Step Up (IMDB TV)

The movie that made Channing Tatum famous, Step Up is a great time, especially for dancers. The story follows Tyler as he tries to make up for the crimes of his friends by doing community service in a performing arts school, and there he meets Nora, a passionate dancer. The two end up working together and growing closer over the course of the movie, leading up to the big dance showcase.

Not only did this movie lead to an actual real-life romance between Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, but it’s also, overall, a lot of fun to watch. While not really a “musical,” the dance scenes are very well-choreographed and the love story believable. I mean, I would fall for Channing, too, if he were dancing with me. Come on!

Easy A (Netflix)

Emma Stone became a household name because of this movie, and while she’s been known to be in more dramas since then, her comedy chops cannot be forgotten. Easy A is about how one rumor can end up spreading into ten, and totally ruin the lives of people at a high school. But, Stone’s character, Olive, uses these rumors to her advantage and decides that she’s not about to let it get to her.

What makes Easy A worth the watch is that while there is a love story in it, it’s sort of in the background and blends in well with the timing of the film. It’s more focused around Olive and her quest to try and somehow make up for these audacious rumors that have spread about her, and that’s what makes it entertaining - plus, Emma Stone is amazing in it. Also, it is nice to see a pre-You Penn Badgley walk around in a really awful school uniform.

High School Musical (Disney+)

Come on, did you really think I wouldn’t put High School Musical on here? This iconic Disney Channel original movie is what put big names like Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens on the map of stardom. The story follows high school basketball star Troy and new-girl Gabriella fighting to get through the struggles of high school through song, and Troy’s impossible decision – basketball or musicals? Oh, the humanity!

I’m going to be honest and say this movie is a whole lot more fun when you don’t take it seriously. It’s not meant to be like that. When you genuinely sit down and watch the film for what it is, you’ll find that it’s filled with awesome dance scenes, actually great songs, and some decently performed characters. Troy and Gabriella are cute! There’s a reason why some of the stars from this became super popular afterward.

Love, Simon (Hulu)

The reason why Love, Simon is so important is that it really is a film that is made for this day. Love, Simon is about Simon, a closeted, gay high schooler who actually tries to go on the hunt to figure out who someone, by the name of Blue, is at their school, because he is gay as well. Many things happen along the way and make life a little harder for Simon, including sudden feelings that arise from one of his friends.

It’s most certainly a film of its time, considering this was the first teen film that was put out into the world that had a storyline that featured homosexual characters in high school having a romance, which was released by a major studio. But, it doesn’t feel forced, and it’s a genuine love story that takes time to develop, with the ending being worth all the trouble it takes to get there. And, Nick Robinson does an excellent job as Simon.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (Netflix)

Ah, 2018. The moment that this movie literally took over everything on social media. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before tells the story of Lara Jean. When she was younger, she wrote love letters to all her little crushes, but, at some point, her younger sister Kitty ends up finding those letters in her room and actually mails them out to the boys themselves – which creates a bit of a pickle for Lara Jean.

I’ll admit that at first, I didn’t want to watch this because of the hype it was given, but after finally sitting down and giving it a chance, I genuinely loved seeing it. It was simple and sweet, and both Lana Condor and Noah Centineo do an excellent job at their respected parts. The movie became so popular that it spawned a sequel, To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, with a third film coming out on February 12, 2021, To All The Boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean.

The Last Song (Disney+)

The Last Song is one of those films that have has plenty of flaws, but I can’t get over how this one film literally led to the whirlwind of a romance that both Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth had over the next decade. The Last Song is about Ronnie, a young woman traveling to a Georgia beach town for the summer to visit her estranged father. There, she meets Will, a local, and both begin to develop feelings for each other.

Again, this movie does have flaws, but for what it was, it’s most certainly a heart-pulling story. The real star of this film is the romance between Ronnie and Will and the chemistry that the two have. Both Cyrus and Hemsworth ended up dating, engaged, and married at one point or another after starring in this film together, so seeing how it all developed is really interesting. Not only that, but the song When I Look At You absolutely slaps and deserves a listen of its own.

Five Feet Apart (Showtime)

You didn’t expect another movie on here that covers illness and romance, but here we are. Five Feet Apart is all about two teenagers who are ill with cystic fibrosis, and over time begin to try and have a relationship with each other despite there being a rule in the hospital that they need to be at least five feet apart, to try and stop cross-infection.

When I first heard about the premise of this film, I did think of it as a rip-off of The Fault in Our Stars. After watching it, though, Five Feet Apart really is entirely different and shows a completely different take on the world of living with an illness and finding love. What makes these movies so interesting to view, however, is that people do actually face this on a daily basis. While the story is fictional, it’s based in reality, and really makes you thankful for the loves that you have now, and to learn to cherish them before they are gone.

The Edge of Seventeen (Rental)

We all knew that Hailee Steinfeld was an amazing actress, but this movie brought it over the top for me. The Edge of Seventeen isn’t just a romance film, but a coming-of-age film, following Nadine, who is struggling to find her own place in life despite not feeling like she fits in anywhere. That includes a romantic issue that involves her best friend and her brother.

The Edge of Seventeen really isn’t like any other teen romance film out there. The protagonist isn’t the one with the main love story, instead it's the side characters who have it. Nadine is the one who has to follow and learn how to deal with it as life begins to change, and her world starts to evolve as she grows into herself. For people who just need to somehow find their own place in life and learn to cope with what's thrown at you, this movie is for you. Hailee Steinfeld is incredible in the role she plays, and Woody Harrelson also shows off his acting chops.

A Cinderella Story (Rental) 

I don’t care what anyone says, I will defend this film and say it is better than any of the spinoffs until the day I die. A Cinderella Story is exactly what you think it is – a modern retelling of the classic story of Cinderella, only this time starring Sam, a young teenager who just tries to get through life after her father died while her step-mother is giving her hell. She meets Prince Charming along the way – who is named Austin here, a boy who shares her dreams and passions.

The story is about as predictable as it can be, because it is a retelling of Cinderella. But Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray have great chemistry, and the modern aspect of the story does make it watchable and fun to view.

Don't mind me, just going to watch To All The Boys I've Loved Before and set my dating standards unrealistically high. Which one of these classic teen romance films is your favorite?

Noah Centineo’s life changed the moment To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before debuted on Netflix back in summer 2018. In just a week, his social media follower count went from 300,000 to 11 million. The former Fosters actor became a huge star as the rom-com based on Jenny Han’s bestselling series dazzled streamers. The 24-year-old actor is getting ready to move up to the DC universe as Atom Smasher in Black Adam and play He-Man in Masters of the Universe, but first he’s reflecting on where it all started.

Noah Centineo’s breakout moment turned the actor into an instant Hollywood heartthrob, something he never expected when he signed on to play the Kovinsky to Lana Condor’s Lara Jean. That job description often comes with a crowd of screaming fans, which the actor apparently experienced early on. According to Centineo, shortly after To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before was released, he was located by five fans to JFK International Airport, where he landed and they had tracked him from.

While speaking to GQ, Noah Centineo recalled how the five fans (two guys and three girls) “scared the shit” out of him at the New York airport after he noticed their too-close-for-comfort presence while he was looking out for his luggage. When he decided to strike a conversation with one of the guys who was standing dangerously close to him and ask about his flight, he said something like this:

Welp, that’s super terrifying. It does get a tad worse too. After finding out the five All The Boys fans had tracked him to the airport somehow, they proceeded to try to follow him home too. Thankfully, Noah Centineo had a good driver to whisk him away when he turned out to be equipped to deal with the situation. As the actor remembered it:

The story does give us a peek into just how massive To All The Boys became right away. Being stalked and followed isn’t something one imagines will happen when signing up for a coming-of-age role, but it's a rare anomaly that Noah Centineo has been blessed and cursed with. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before has become one of the most celebrated rom-coms of the decade, and it will come to an end next month with Always and Forever. The Netflix trailer just dropped:

Always And Forever will officially wrap up Lara Jean and Peter Kovinsky’s love story as the pair gear up to head to college. We’ll have to wait and see if the couple’s plans for the future end up aligning when To All The Boys: Always and Forever premieres on Netflix on February 12. When a saga like Jenny Han’s To All the Boys trilogy begins, there’s no telling when it will end up wrapping when all is said and done. All anyone can know is that by time that final flick arrives, it’ll be the end of an era. Now with the final film To All the Boys: Always and Forever set to drop in this calendar year, it’s time to say goodbye to Lara Jean, Peter, and the rest of the gang, with one last hurrah, and now we've gotten a look at the first trailer.

As you can see in the trailer above, it’s quite a last hurrah too, as Lana Condor and Noah Centineo’s adorable high school sweethearts are going to prom, as well as on a senior trip to New York City, together. Yet there’s one pretty big question that hangs in the balance as the end of their senior year looms near: will Lara Jean and Peter’s relationship survive after one of them doesn’t go to Stanford? Admittedly, that last hook to the To All the Boys: Always and Forever trailer sucks the air out of the room, whether you’re a fan or a newbie.

The trailer for the final To All the Boys film couldn’t have come at a better time, as it was announced during Netflix’s big 2021 sneak peek that this series, as well as The Kissing Booth, would be delivering one final entry in their respective teen rom-com universes. Surely both of these franchises couldn’t go on forever, and there was always going to be an ending in sight. And in the case of To All the Boys: Always and Forever, it’s actually a really good idea for this movie to act as the end of this particular era.

In fact, if you've kept tabs on the books the Netflix movies are based around, you should know that author Jenny Han has only written three projects so far, so three movies would make perfect symmetrical sense as well. (Though it's worth noting the movies haven't strictly stuck to the timelines of the books as events and more have changed or shifted.) However, recently there was some talk about a fourth Netflix film after Han herself stoked the fires and seemed to indicate she was thinking of writing a fourth book.

Thus, I'm actually really happy that Netflix yesterday made super clear the direction the To All The Boys franchise was going in, though I suppose the subscription streaming service always reserves the right to change its mind, as happened with Lucifer and some other properties. For now, if you are a fan of Lara Jean, prepare to have some tissues handy as the movie is coming sooner rather than later.

Most viewers know Noah Centineo for his role as Peter Kavinsky in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film franchise. However, the rising star is also set to take on some major roles in a few upcoming blockbusters, including the long-awaited Masters of the Universe reboot. As you would expect, Centineo has been working hard to build muscle for his starring role as He-Man. Well, the actor has now given us a look at the result of his hard work and, needless to say, he’s ripped.

In an Instagram post, Noah Centineo revealed pictures of his physique, complete with abs. The post also came with a cheeky caption in which he asked followers if he should start training again. You can check out the post for yourself down below:

When moviegoers think of He-Man, they likely still envision Dolph Lundgren, who was physically imposing when he played the role back in the ‘80s. Noah Centineo may not be on his level just yet, but he’s definitely close. All in all, you have to applaud him for putting in the work to get that fit.

If we’re being honest, Noah Centineo already seemed to be in relatively good shape before he was cast in the role. Still, the actor reportedly put on 30 extra pounds of muscle in preparation for the part and stuck to a regimen that included eating as many as 11 eggs per day.

The Masters of the Universe reboot has been in development for some time, though Centineo was cast in the titular role just last year. It’s no surprise that he’s fully committed to the physical aspect of the role, as he’s previously referred to playing the character as a “really big responsibility.”

It’s likely that Noah Centineo will want to hold on to his physical and mental determination as he prepares to take on his first superhero role. The heartthrob is currently slated to play the hero Atom Smasher in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. As of right now, it’s unclear as to what the character’s role will be in the highly anticipated film, but chances are he’ll come to blows with Johnson’s titular antihero at some point. So it’s probably best that Centineo does keep that muscle as long as he can.

With Centineo moving into more blockbuster projects, it wouldn’t be surprising if he decides to maintain this particular body type. Actors like the newly ripped Kumail Nanjiani have even stated that it’s easier to keep the muscle than it is to gain it.

Regardless of what he decides to do off camera, it’s clear that Noah Centineo is doing everything he can to prepare for his immediate on camera projects.

The Masters of the Universe reboot doesn’t currently have a set release date, but Black Adam is set to hit theaters on December 22, 2021.

Set over the course of a bitter and emotionally exhausting divorce between playwright Charlie Barber (Adam Driver) and Nicole Barber (Scarlett Johansson), Noah Baumbach's 2019 Academy Award-winning Marriage Story goes into great detail about the emotions, realities, and struggles of a failed marriage. As the couple grows apart and their young son Henry (Azhy Robertson) is stretched across the country, the movie examines how quickly relationships can be upended when things no longer work. And while some sections of the movie are sometimes too real and raw to take in, the movie strangely offers one of the most hopeful conclusions in the genre. But still, the movie absolutely wrecks anyone with even the most closed-off hearts.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Hulu, Peacock)

Released in 2008, Nicholas Stoller's Forgetting Sarah Marshall, quickly became a must-watch in terms of breakup movies, but not because of a depressing and heart-wrenching telling of infidelity and heartbreak (though those are both featured here). Instead, the movie, which stars Jason Segel (who wrote the screenplay) as composer Peter Bretter, a guy who escapes to a Hawaiian resort to try to forget his actress ex-girlfriend Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell), is a series of hilarious jokes and vignettes that tell the story of rebirth and new love at someone's lowest point. And with a cast that includes Mila Kunis, Russell Brand, Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, and just about every celebrity in the early 21st Century, there's a lot to take in during this raunchy comedy.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (Netflix)

There are breakup movies and then there is Michel Gondry's 2004 intricate and cerebral masterpiece Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Starring Jim Carrey as Joel Barish and Kate Winslet as Clementine Kruczynski, the film centers around two former lovers who undergo an experimental treatment to wipe each other from their memories following a painful breakup. Over the course of the movie, we follow Joel as he comes to terms with his decision to forget the love of his life just as the memories are deconstructed like sets on a stage. Beautifully written, shot, and edited, this unorthodox breakup story is just as much about love and new beginnings as it is about anything else.

Manhattan (Amazon)

A lot of things can be said about Woody Allen's personal life, but nothing can take away from the fact that the writer-director gave the world some of the best breakup movies of all time. With films like Annie Hall and Hannah and Her Sisters, Allen is a master at deconstructing doomed relationships even when the participating parties have no idea of the fate that awaits them.

Besides the aforementioned Annie Hall, none of Allen's films tackle this idea better than the 1979 black-and-white affair Manhattan. With a total of three breakups for Allen's Isaac Davis (a divorce from Meryl Streep's Jill Davis and a breakup with Mariel Hemingway's Tracy), the main love story focuses on that with Diane Keaton's Mary Wilke as the two become friends then lovers then former lovers all with a backdrop of New York City bustling around them.

Casablanca (HBO Max)

When thinking about breakup movies, Michael Curtiz's 1942 Casablanca probably isn't one of the first to come to mind, but at the very center of this war drama is a brutal and heartbreaking story about a failed relationship that proved to be one of the biggest casualties of World War II.

Following Humphrey Bogart's Rick Blaine, a cynical American operating a nightclub of dubious legality in the city of Casablanca, the film picks up when the proprietor's old flame Ilsa Lunda (Ingrid Bergman) stumbles in with her famous husband Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). While trying to secure passage to freedom with Nazis hot on the tail of his former lover's new man, Rick finds himself recounting those good and not-so-good memories he shared with Ilsa in Paris. Try listening to "Time Goes By" without feeling a lump in your throat.

The First Wives Club (HBO Max)

There are a lot of breakup movies that are mopey, melodramatic pity parties and there are those like Hugh Wilson's 1996 revenge comedy The First Wives Club. When three middle-aged women (Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler) are left by their husbands for younger women, they don't lick their wounds… they get even. Inspired by the suicide of their college friend who took a plunge after being left by her millionaire husband, the three start a club of their own and set out for some old-fashioned payback for those who wronged them and others like them. The trio of scorned ex-wives will stop at nothing until they get back what was wrongfully taken from them by their no-good former husbands.

500 Days Of Summer (Starz)

On the surface, 500 Days of Summer looks like a quirky, hipster romantic comedy about a greeting-card writer named Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as he falls in love with Summer (Zooey Deschanel), but it's anything but a happy-go-lucky story of young love. Sure, there's some of that in Marc Webb's 2009 indie darling, but the real heart of this movie is the breakup that takes up a large portion of the runtime as Tom tries to figure out what went wrong. And then there's the party scene where Tom thinks that Summer is inviting him over to get back together but soon realizes what is actually going on in the great "expectations vs. reality" scene.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before (Netflix)

Marriage Story isn't the only great breakup movie to be released by Netflix in recent years as the surprise hit To All The Boys I've Loved Before swept its way into viewers' hearts in 2018. The film, which is directed by Susan Johnson, stars Lana Condor as Lara Jean Covey, a girl whose love letters to her crushes are sent out by her younger sister. Lara and one of the recipients, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), begin "dating" to throw off the other boys and Peter's ex-girlfriend Gen. But don't you know it, the two fall in love, before breaking up and then ultimately reuniting in something out of young adult fiction novel. Though a little hokey, the movie works and is ultimately a lot of fun.

La La Land (HBO Max)

Damien Chazelle's 2016 musical La La Land offers a look at a couple who are both connected and ultimately torn apart by their passion and drive to make their dreams come true. With the story of Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a talented musician with aspirations of owning his own jazz club, and Mia (Emma Stone), an actress looking for their big break in Hollywood, this delightful treat of a movie is just as brutal and heartbreaking as it is bubbly. Going into it, the viewer is fully aware that in order for these two to make their mark in the world they will need to rip themselves from one another, no matter how much they love each other.

He's Just Not That Into You (Netflix)

There are certain movies that were tailor-made to be watched on a Sunday afternoon when you feel like you just ned two hours to escape the outside world and Ken Kwapis' 2009 romantic comedy He's Just Not That into You is one of those movies. Centered around a large ensemble cast that includes the likes of Jennifer Anniston, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Bradley Cooper, and Ginnifer Goodwin, the movie is split into four main sections all dealing with love, loss, and breaking up. While you shouldn't expect the complexity of other movies on this list,there are definitely worse options out there.

The Holiday (Amazon)

You can't have a list of breakup movies without at least Nancy Meyers entry, and what better way of talking about the godmother of romantic comedies than with her 2006 drama The Holiday. While most of the movies listed here center around one breakup, The Holiday features two stories of failed relationships and new beginnings with Cameron Diaz' Amanda Woods and Kate Winslet's Iris Simpkins, who trade places to get away from the awful men in their lives. And who would have thought that they would fall in love (Jude Law's Graham Simpkins and Jack Black's Miles Dumont), but it does in fact happen. But honestly, everyone knows this movie is really about Eli Wallach's Arthur Abbot, who pretty much steals the show.

Kenneth Lonergan's 2016 drama Manchester by the Sea isn't really a breakup story, but more of a movie about the awful event that ultimately led the dissolution of a marriage. Starring Casey Affleck as Lee Chandler, a broken man who is destroyed by a tragic mistake, the movie touches on his failed marriage to Randi, played by an emotionally-gutted Michelle Williams. It isn't until later in the movie that the former spouses come to terms with the event that completely changed their lives and everyone around them, making this perhaps the most unorthodox breakup movie to come out in recent memory.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Series (2018, 2020)

In To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) finds herself getting a lot of attention first from a series of guys she once loved and wrote letters to, and then from the whole school when she fakes a relationship with Mr. Popular Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo). Like all good fictional teen romances, Lara Jean and Peter find their happy ending...until the second movie. Lara finds herself torn between Peter and another boy that she once loved, John Ambrose McClaren (Jordan Fisher).

Why It's A Good Option For The Kissing Booth Fans: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and The Kissing Booth films have very similar themes, love triangles, and are trilogy movies, but they’re not just copies of one another. They’re similar enough where they could exist in the same YA universe, but they have enough differences to allow viewers to enjoy some light teen romance without feeling like they’ve seen this story 6,000 times.

Alexa & Katie (2018-2020)

Alexa & Katie is Netflix’s family comedy about Alexa (Paris Berelc) and her best friend Katie (Isabel May). Alexa is in remission after undergoing treatment for cancer. Alexa & Katie isn’t as depressing as it sounds, especially because it’s a comedy, and the series’ main focus is on the girls dealing with typical high school drama, like boys, ambitions, school, and family. Alexa & Katie ran for three seasons.

Why It’s a Good Option for The Kissing Booth Fans: Both Alexa and Katie have love interests throughout the course of the show, but that aspect is very minor compared to the show’s main message about family and friendship. Katie and Alexa’s friendship is what makes the show endearing and interesting. The main conflict of The Kissing Booth’s first film, and the overall conflict, is Elle being torn between her best friend and boyfriend. In many ways, Alexa & Katie and The Kissing Booth movies are about the importance of friendship, and growing together and apart.

A Walk To Remember (2002)

Landon Carter (Shane West) and Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore) are two teens who seem like complete opposites. However, over the course of A Walk to Remember, they begin to understand each other and fall in love. They also discover the power that brings.

Why It's A Good Option For The Kissing Booth Fans: A Walk to Remember and The Kissing Booth kind of deal with two characters who don’t expect to fall in love, falling in love. Both movies give you all those warm nostalgic memories of first love. A Walk to Remember has a more bittersweet tone to it, but both overall are just wholesome movies about finding love and the obstacles you face to be together.

Never Have I Ever (2020-)

Mindy Kaling created Never Have I Ever, a series starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi, a 15-year old girl determined to make this year her best year ever. It’s about Devi’s series of adventures and misadventures.

Why It’s a Good Option For The Kissing Booth Fans: If you really enjoyed The Kissing Booth 2’s love triangle, then you’ll go crazy for Never Have I Ever’s triangle. This series gave me a rare love triangle where I like one romance slightly better than the other, but I would be fine with whomever she picks. Besides romance drama, The Kissing Booth 2 and Never Have I Ever both deal with the growing pains of maturing and having to make major life decisions.

Dumplin (2018)

Dumplin stars Danielle Macdonald and Jennifer Aniston, and also features music by Dolly Parton. The film follows Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald ) as she enters a beauty pageant run by her mother Rosie (Jennifer Aniston).

Why It’s a Good Option For Kissing Booth Fans: If you thought Noah was swoon-worthy, wait until you meet Bo (Luke Benward). Besides both heroines finding love, Dumplin and The Kissing Booth also both deal with the leads discovering themselves and not letting others dictate how they live their lives. The endearing nature of Willowdean and Elle is what helps make both movies successful.

What A Girl Wants (2003)

Amanda Bynes, Colin Firth, Kelly Preston, and Oliver James star in What a Girl Wants. The film revolves around Daphne (Amanda Bynes) discovering that her father is someone of nobility in England. She decides to travel there to meet him. Henry (Colin Firth) had no idea that he had a daughter. It’s a clash of cultures as Daphne must learn to fit in with British high society.

Why It's A Good Option For The Kissing Booth Fans: What A Girl Wants is a fun adventure movie about being true to oneself and identity. The Kissing Booth 2 is more about Elle deciding who she is and what she wants, which falls in line with the overall story of What A Girl Wants. Both films are also just fun teen comedies, and What A Girl Wants may appeal to The Kissing Booth fans who want to watch a teen comedy of the early 2000s.

Sierra Burgess Is A Loser (2018)

This modern Cyrano de Bergerac story has Sierra (Shannon Purser) asking the popular girl Veronica (Kristine Froseth) to pretend to be her, so she can win the popular boy from another school, played by Noah Centineo.

Why It’s A Good Option For The Kissing Booth Fans: Sierra Burgess Is A Loser at its core is a story about friendship. Through all the pretending and mistaken identity, Sierra and Veronica become great friends, and they learn what being good friends really means. The Kissing Booth’s main conflict usually revolves around Elle and Lee’s friendship. It’s important to them, so they’re willing to make some sacrifices to keep it strong. Both films highlight the importance of friendship and, wrong or right, what people are willing to sacrifice to keep it.

The Half Of It (2020)

The Half of It is a romantic drama about Ellie (Leah Lewis) who helps a popular jock Paul (Daniel Diemer) win the girl of his dreams, Aster (Alexxis Lemire). The bigger issue at hand is that Ellie is also in love with Aster.

Why It's A Good Option For The Kissing Booth Fans: The Half Of It is as much about teen romance as it is about true friendship. Paul and Ellie’s friendship story is just as strong as the Aster and Ellie romance one. The two movies also share in their exploration of coming to terms with teen girls growing up and what that means for accepting and embracing their sexuality.

Naomi And Ely’s No Kiss List (2015)

Victoria Justice and Pierson Fode starred in Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List, a film about best friends Naomi and Ely who have a list of men that are off-limits. The two are opposites in their exploration of their sexual identity. Naomi (Victoria Justice) is heterosexual, a virgin, and currently in a relationship, while Ely (Pierson Fode) is gay, promiscuous, and single.

Why It’s a Good Option For Kissing Booth Fans: In an alternative universe, Ely and Naomi are Lee and Elle.The Kissing Booth and Naomi and Ely’s No Kiss List are about that delicate balance between keeping your friends in your life, and growing up and finding love. You need both but sometimes it is hard to keep both without neglecting one.

After (2019)

After is a romantic drama starring Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Tess (Josephine Langford) and Hardin (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin) meet in college and then have a whirlwind, complicated romance.

Why It’s a Good Option For Kissing Booth Fans: After is a lot more dark and moody than The Kissing Booth, but the films have similar origin stories. After and The Kissing Booth started off on fanfiction forums. After and its upcoming sequel After We Collided was based on Harry Styles’ fanfiction. Among the many controversies that have kept the new Star Wars trilogy afloat in conversation is Kelly Marie Tran’s character of Rose Tico. She became a fan favorite to some and the target of hate to others following the release of Rian Johnson’s polarizing The Last Jedi. But 2018’s To All The Boys breakout star Lana Condor was close to being the one to deliver Rose's lines on the big screen.

Before nabbing her iconic role as Lara Jean Covey on the Netflix hit, Lana Condor was in the running for Rose Tico. So much so that she actually met with John Boyega for a chemistry read. Here’s what the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before star recently revealed:

Whoa! Before The Force Awakens hit theaters and John Boyega likely said goodbye to casually hanging out at sushi joints, Lana Condor met up with him as part of the casting process for The Last Jedi. Finn and Rose spent a good part of Episode VIII together, so one of the last passages into nabbing the part was making sure the two could click with audiences on screen.

Obviously Kelly Marie Tran got the role and Lana Condor didn’t, but the 22-year-old actress has a level head about the whole thing. In her words to StyleCaster:

Lana Condor got to lead her own romantic comedy that went on to become one of Netflix’s biggest hits ever. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before became a phenomenon that put her on the map, and her co-star, Noah Centineo, quickly became the internet’s boyfriend. She’s since made a recently-released sequel To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and has already filmed the end to the trilogy, Always and Forever, Lara Jean.

The actress is likely kind of happy she’s not in Kelly Marie Tran’s shoes either. The actress received so much online hate for her role as Rose Tico in The Last Jedi that she quit social media and went to therapy. It was her first theatrical movie, though. Lana Condor’s first big-screen role took place on 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse when she appeared as Jubilee. (By the way, she’s completely down to play the mutant again, Disney.)

Following the backlash toward Rose Tico, the Star Wars character was given just one minute and 16 seconds of screen time in The Rise of Skywalker. Lots of fans of the character protested her tiny presence in the movie, but Kelly Marie Tran explained being “really grateful” just to be a part of the franchise.

We’re well in the throes of Noah Centineo being a Hollywood heartthrob after the actor became a part of the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise as well as signing on for other Netflix rom-coms like The Perfect Date. In the time since, he’s appeared in Charlie’s Angels and is set to star in Masters of the Universe, but he’s now revealed his path to success, particularly through the streaming service, was not something he anticipated ahead of time.

In a recent profile, Noah Centineo talked about how his talent agency were really the one most excited for To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, noting,

Speaking to Variety, it seems as if Noah Centineo had some hopes his career might take off, but he had no idea it would all play out the way it did. By “the way it did” I mean To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before was a huge Netflix success. The streamer went so far as to greenlight two sequels to the movie, which filmed back to back. The most recent of those To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You just came out on Netflix this month.

It’s been a whirlwind time for the now 23-year-old actor. While Netflix didn’t officially launch his career (credit goes to Disney Channel originals or The Fosters), it was following his success in the series of Netflix movies that Noah Centineo has broken out as someone with a notable fanbase who is currently working to transition more to the big screen.

His first big role in that line was expected to be in Masters of the Universe, in which Noah Centineo is supposed to play He-Man. Unfortunately, just a few weeks ago, Sony delayed Masters of the Universe for a second time, this time pulling it from its March 5, 2021 slot and taking it off the schedule entirely. What is good news for Tom Holland’s Uncharted is not great news for Noah Centineo.

Allegedly, Noah Centineo had already put on 30 lbs of muscle for the role when it got delayed the first time. He’s lost the weight since then, but if these delays keep cropping up, I’d expect to see some yo-yoing.

Regardless of what happens with He-Man, Netflix is still a go-to place for Noah Centineo content and there is still a third movie in his go-to franchise to look forward to. Beyond this, the actor does not seem to be forgetting the boost that Netflix really gave him, also telling the outlet that if Jenny Han eventually writes a fourth book in the popular To All The Boys series, he hopes he’ll be back.

If you have already caught P.S. I Still Love You, you should already know about the new character competing for Lara Jean’s (Lana Condor) affections in the new movie. But Peter is still a popular character and we can't wait to see him back when Netflix eventually premieres Always And Forever, Lara Jean. It’s been just a few short days since Netflix released P.S. I Still Love You, the sequel to the streaming service’s 2018 original To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. If there’s one thing the two movies have in common, it’s no shortage of swoon-worthy young men. Last time around, we saw Lara Jean obsessing over Peter and Josh and in the new movie it’s Peter and John Ambrose, leading me to ask, ‘Wait, what happened to Josh?’

The good news is, the books hold some answers in regards to why Josh isn’t really present in To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. But first, we need to take a trip down memory lane and dive into the events of the first movie to really understand why the character isn't present this time around. If you can remember the first film, Lara Jean has strong feelings for Josh Sanderson, played by Israel Broussard.

Josh had previously been dating Lara Jean’s older sister Margot, who breaks up with him when she goes off to school. This does not help Lara Jean’s crush any and Josh becomes the catalyst for Lara Jean fake dating Peter in the first movie, which eventually leads to her starting a real relationship with Peter. At the end of the film Lara Jean and Josh make up and declare themselves friends.

High school is fleeting and Josh, from what I remember, is not even mentioned in P.S. I Still Love You the movie and he’s definitely absent as a character in the Netflix film. This is likely intentional. In Jenny Han’s book series, Josh begins dating another young woman after his break-up from Margot and sees Lara Jean and the family much less.

In fact, the day that Peter reveals the treehouse is coming down (which also happens in the P.S. I Still Love You) Lara Jean happens to reflect on where her and Gen’s relationship is and what happened with her and Josh, noting in the book:

So, though Josh appears in the second book, he's almost there to teach Lara Jean a lesson about how moments are fleeting rather than to be a romantic catalyst of any sort. Since movies strip away a lot of these side interactions and relationships, it makes sense Israel Broussard wasn't asked back for the second film.

To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You plays out a little differently than the book on the small screen, but the main component of the film is the love triangle playing out between Peter Kavinsky, Lara Jean Covey, and John Ambrose McLaren. Both men think Lara Jean is the bee’s knees. While Peter won her over in the first movie, unfortunately, their relationship faces some difficulties this time around, making John Ambrose an attractive prospect.

Basically, with all of this in mind, it’s no wonder the movie didn’t find any way to incorporate Josh in. Previously, Israel Broussard admitted to ET he wouldn't be in the next movie, at the time noting he thought he might be in the third movie.

Interestingly, Always and Forever, Lara Jean only really features mentions of the character, including the fact that Josh went away to school but still keeps in contact with Lara Jean's dad via email. The movies have played with the timelines in the books and have changed some things, so we'll have to wait and see what happens with the third movie.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before was the most memorable and viral romantic comedies of the 2010s, so it was no surprise when Netflix announced Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky’s romance story would become a trilogy just like Jenny Han’s books. A year and a half later, To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You has dropped on the streaming platform and wow, that ending!! There’s a lot to break down here.

We thought Lara Jean’s life was complicated in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before when she became embroiled in a series of love letter leaks all thanks to her younger sis, Kitty. When Lana Condor’s character was caught between having a difficult conversation with discussing her crush with her longtime bestie and her older sister’s recent ex Josh, she falls into the arms of Noah Centineo’s Peter Kavinsky in a staged relationship for their entire high school to feast on before real feelings settle in.

In P.S. I Love You, Lara Jean and Peter are together for real, but there’s one more love letter and this time it comes between the young couple. Unlike the others, John Ambrose McClaren (Jordan Fisher) was a major crush for Lara Jean and his return to her life messes with her head. Is Peter the right choice for her? All the doubts and insecurities creep in. Let’s get into Lara Jean’s decision at the end of the latest To All The Boys movie first:

What Happens At The End Of All The Boys: P.S. I Love You?

We spend much of P.S. I Still Love You starry-eyed with Lara Jean over a new possibility in John Ambrose. Jordan Fisher’s character presents a different kind of boo for Lara Jean – full of geeking out over Harry Potter in treehouses, having deep conversations and sitting on the sidelines of parties together. She starts to question her relationship with Peter because he’s into beer pong, being a social butterfly and she feels like she’s playing catch up over the whole “being a girlfriend” thing.

P.S. I Love You is all about Lara Jean realizing that being in a relationship has a lot more to it than getting the guy. Now that she has Peter, she’s faced with sorting out her own roadblocks that keep her from embracing her relationship with Kavinsky. One major problem flooding her brain is knowing Gen experienced being Peter’s girlfriend before she came along. It makes her feel second best and jealous.

When Chris shows LJ a picture of Peter and Gen standing close together at high school, she confronts him – going back to the first night they made out in the hot tub. She realizes that Gen was on her way to hang out with Peter there and the steamy moment could have easily happened between Peter and Gen. Feeling angered and insecure, she asks that they break up.

Towards the end of the movie, Lara Jean resolves things by having a heart-to-heart with Gen in the treehouse. She finds out that Gen’s parents are going through a divorce and she needed Peter (whose parents are also split up) to lean on – hence the picture. After a lot of toxicity between Lara Jean and Gen throughout the two movies, they clear things up between them and LJ accepts that Gen can still have a connection with Peter, and that she and Peter can have a solid relationship at the same time.

In the movie, Lara Jean is also reconnecting with John Ambrose and weighing her options with him and Peter. She is reliving her old feelings with him as kids as the pair spend time together volunteering at the senior center. They flirt and have fun but once John Ambrose goes for the kiss, she realizes it’s not what she wants. P.S. I Still Love You ends with LJ and Peter getting back together, finally happy and on a cloud.

Is This The Last Of John Ambrose In To All The Boys?

Sure, Lara Jean gets a happy ending with P.S. I Still Love You but there’s certainly a loose end here. What about John Ambrose? The pair have shared quite a connection since they volunteered together and he was just left rejected in the snow by his childhood crush. Do you think John Ambrose sees LJ and Peter make up outside the center? How heartbreaking would that be?

If we’re sticking to the All The Boys books, this is about as far as it goes with John Ambrose. Once Lara Jean makes her decision to go back to Peter, she never thinks back to John Ambrose again. So don’t expect this love triangle to play a massive part in the franchise after P.S. I Still Love You. In the next book, John Ambrose has a smaller part to play and even finds love elsewhere as well. Sorry, “Team John”!

What’s Next For Lara Jean In To All The Boys 3?

As you might have heard, this is not the end of the story for Lara Jean and Peter a.k.a “Covensky”. Jenny Han’s books are a trilogy and so will the Netflix rom-coms. All The Boys: Always And Forever, Lara Jean has already been filmed with the same director as P.S. I Love You, Michael Fimognari, but a release date has not been set for the movie just yet.

In Always And Forever, Lara Jean the couple is in their senior year of high school and the central conflict lies in their decisions about where they will go to college. LJ and Peter plan to go to the same college, but their acceptance letters do not match these hopes and it complicates things once again for the couple. Covensky deals with the possibility of either having a long distance relationship or breaking things off.

The production of Always And Forever, Lara Jean did go to Seoul, South Korea – so fans can expect to see the characters traveling abroad in the final Netflix film. The third movie may test the high schoolers’ relationship more than ever as they contemplate their personal futures, having sex and the longevity of their relationship.

This week, To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You became available to Netflix subscribers worldwide. The much-anticipated sequel to 2018's surprise hit, To All The Boys I Loved Before, based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Jenny Han, the romantic new comedy reunites viewers with high school sweethearts Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) as they face the next phase of their relationship, while one of the final recipients of Lara Jean's letters, John Ambrose McClaren (Jordan Fisher), returns into her life. While everyone will have different opinions on the movie, either good or bad, there are a few key ways — in this writer's humble opinion, at least — that the sequel exceeds the original, resulting in a richer film.

You may agree or disagree, notably with the movie now available at your viewing convenience on Netflix. When you have sequel this highly-anticipated, there are certainly going to be a variety of opinions floating around the internet the next few days. But there are some notable ways in which To All The Boys 2 improves upon or excels compared to the original 2018 hit. And we'll list them all below. It's More Emotionally Rewarding

Now that the characters have been established and the relationship between Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky is cemented, we get to spend more time with these two as an actual couple, away from the pretend public relationship they created in the original film. This notable change certainly goes a long way towards making them seem like more real, fully-realized characters, and it makes their relationship more sincere and believable, thus making the challenges they face in this movie more emotionally investing.

Similarly, the sequel takes careful strides to make John Ambrose an important figure in Lara Jean's life, not simply just another young man she wrote a letter to several years ago. It explores the conflicted feelings she faces as she realizes that John Ambrose is the first man she truly ever loved, and that she must reconcile with this surprising return into her life just as she's starting to go steady with her first-ever boyfriend. This ultimately makes the dramatic moments more punctuated, and the sappy sweet ending moments all-the-more rewarding.

It Offers A More Complex Romance Triangle

Now, this one might be up for debate. It depends on whether you were more taken by the fluttering adolescent feelings Lara Jean feels for both Peter Kavinsky and Josh Sanderson (Happy Death Day's Israel Broussard), or you were ultimately more entranced by the complications brought to Lara Jean and Peter's relationship once John Ambrose McClaren entered the frame. 

For me, I was ultimately in the latter category. In the first movie, it was only a matter of time before Peter and Lara Jean cemented their relationship status for real, notably since there wasn't any real danger of Lara Jean betraying her sister by forming a relationship with Josh. With P.S. I Still Love You, however, it becomes apparent that Lara Jean and John Ambrose's relationship has played a big factor into making these teens the people they are today, and this is all happening while Peter and Lara Jean must face the challenges that come with a maturing relationship. Add in the complex history between Peter and John Ambrose, and this a recipe for serious relationship drama.

There Are Better Character Dynamics

As established earlier, now that we know who Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky are as people, To All The Boys 2 (which should have been called 2 All The Boys, for the record), allows the characters to interact and communicate with each other in more sincere, believable ways. Additionally, whenever John Ambrose enters the scene, the ways in which they intertwine with their personal backstories is more investing than the romantic triangle between Lara Jean, Peter Kavinsky, and Josh Sanderson, where Lara Jean was the only real, honest connection between these three characters. This time around, it is apparent that these three characters have a history together, outside of their romantic relationships, and it makes the dynamics found between them more investing to watch. There are more stakes in place, and you believe that Lara would both want to stay with Peter AND get together with John too.

There's Better Korean Representation

One of the most rewarding aspects of To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You is allowing the main character's Korean heritage to have a greater presence in the narrative. While it wasn't necessarily ignored in the first movie, it gets ample time to flourish in this movie, particularly with a touching sequence where Lara Jean, her father (John Corbett), and Lara's younger sister, Kitty (Anna Cathcart) visit Lara and Kitty's grandmother for a holiday service. It's a moment where representation is able to be seen and it shows us a holiday sequence that rarely — if ever — gets seen in an American movie like this. It's a nice moment, and hopefully, the filmmakers at hand here are encouraged to include more moments like this one in the forthcoming third movie.

There's More Emotional Maturity

As a result of the characters being older, as well as the central relationship being more established at this point in the film, To All The Boys 2 helps to establish more emotional maturity between our two main characters, letting us see them grow as characters while also facing more nuanced troubles. It's not so much a matter of whether or not they'll get together, but if they can continue to stay together when difficulties are found in their paths. Most notably, when their personal histories factor into their relationship, it gives them pause and it causes them to elevate their romantic status — and there are undoubtedly problems along the way. It can get melodramatic. At its core, though, this central relationship is grounded and complex than before.

A Richer Understanding Of The Characters

Having already played these characters once before, it's apparent that the actors on hand have a better, richer understanding of their characters. This helps to bring more intuitive, authentic performances from the actors, while also making the emotional beats more resonant due to their greater sense of authenticity. Additionally, when it comes to the filmmakers on hand here, while there is a new person in the director's chair, there is a sense that the screenwriter and producers have a better understanding of these characters as well, and a better sense of patience and care for their cares and troubles, giving them more scenes where characters live and breathe, away from establishing over-heightened emotional beats (well, mostly, at least).

Couldn’t have one teen romance franchise without a love triangle moment, could you Netflix? Now To All The Boys fans have a discussion dividing them in half. Team Peter or Team John Ambrose? Back in 2018, when All The Boys I’ve Loved Before became a big hit, Noah Centineo was all the rage. His curly hair and Mark Ruffalo-esque likability really sparked a fling between the teens of today. But, now Jordan Fisher has debuted his John Ambrose McClaren on Lara Jean and we’re just confused.

John Ambrose was Lara Jean’s first love and they’re kind of perfect for each other when you think about it. They have a lot more in common than “Covensky” do, yet Lara Jean goes for Peter. And while she’s at it, she leaves poor John Ambrose in the snow, cold and rejected. Here’s Jordan Fisher’s take on the fate of his character in P.S. I Still Love You:

That’s right. John Ambrose is a victim here. He’s a gentleman throughout the whole flick. Things start off with Jordan Fisher’s character writing a kind response to Lara Jean’s mistakenly sent-out letter. The object of his affection is the one who is breaking hearts here. For much of the All The Boys sequel, she doesn’t tell him she’s already in a relationship and allows for a little flirt here and there to go on between them.

Jordan Fisher recently told ET that he thinks a lot of fans are going find themselves taking sides with John Ambrose. His conclusion just wasn’t fair and he had “pure intentions” with Lara Jean. And he’s right, a ton of fans are really unsatisfied with the ending for To All The Boys 2. It was written between the pages of Jenny Han’s 2015 book, so it’s a debate that’s gone on for almost five years.

It almost feels as if the sequel is trying to convince fans that John Ambrose is the better guy for Lara Jean too! But, in the end it’s all about soon-to-be He-Man, Noah Centineo. Now, P.S. I Still Love You isn’t the end of the road for Lara Jean. The story will continue in Always and Forever, Lara Jean.

As for Jordan Fisher’s John Ambrose perhaps getting a better ending after facing rejection in Netflix’s recent release, he is not spilling the candy hearts about anything. Here’s what he said:

In it, Nanjiani plays a fictionalized version of himself who falls for Emily (Zoe Kazan). Emily and Kumail date but eventually breakup. When she is placed in an induced coma because of a serious lung infection, Kumail grows close with her parents, Beth (Holly Hunter) and Terry (Ray Romano).

In The Big Sick, Kumail is torn between Pakistani tradition and his love for Emily. His parents want him to marry a Pakistani woman, and he wants to make them happy, but Emily’s illness makes him realize his strong feelings for her. 10 Things I Hate About You (Disney+)

In the mid-90s to early 2000s, creating modern versions of classic stories was a trendy thing. It happened with Clueless and Emma, O and Othello, Cruel Intentions and Dangerous Liaisons, and of course 10 Things I Hate About You and The Taming of the Shrew. In 10 Things I Hate About You, Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) wants to ask his crush Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) out on a date, but Bianca can’t date anyone until her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) dates. Cameron pays outsider, bad boy Patrick (Heath Ledger) to take out Kat.

In 10 Things I Hate About You, you have the ultra-sweet romance between Cameron and Bianca, and the hate-to-love one between Patrick and Kat. Both pairings are engaging, but Patrick and Kat’s intense romance stands out the most because of its allure. If Beale Street Could Talk (Hulu)

Barry Jenkins wrote and directedIf Beale Street Could Talk, a movie based on James Baldwin’s novel of the same name. It follows Tish (Kiki Layne) and Fonny (Stephan James)’s journey as he’s wrongly accused of rape, and she tries to clear his name before their child is born. Regina King has a small supporting role that won her an Academy Award.

If Beale Street Could Talk highlights the prejudices faced by African Americans in the early 70s. However, at the heart of this film is the unbreakable, enduring love story of Tish and Fonny. Despite all obstacles, they fight with everything to love without restrictions. If Beale Street Could Talk is available to stream on Hulu. Stream it HERE.

Always Be My Maybe (Netflix)

Randall Park and Ali Wong star in Always Be My Maybe. They play Sasha and Marcus, two lifelong friends who fall apart after an awkward encounter. After his mother died from an unexpected accident, Marcus stayed in San Francisco with his father. Sasha, on the other hand, has been living a successful life as a chef. She temporarily moves back to San Francisco to open a new restaurant and the old spark between Sasha and Marcus starts to reignite.

Ali Wong and Randall Park are hilarious comedians and in Always Be My Maybe, they show their talent for writing romantic comedies as well. They co-wrote it with Michael Golamco. Always Be My Maybe tells the story of how revisiting the past can help one look towards the future. The movie's a delightful romantic comedy with pleasant performances by Park and Wong. There's also a Keanu Reeves cameo, so can you really go wrong with a Keanu cameo? Always Be My Maybe is a Netflix original movie. Stream it HERE.

The Holiday (IMDb TV)

Written and directed by Nancy Meyers, The Holiday stars Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black, and Jude Law. Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet) have a house exchange that sends them to different countries, where they both find love. Amanda falls for Iris’s older brother, Graham (Jude Law), and Iris falls for Amanda’s music composer Miles (Jack Black).

Nancy Meyers is one of the queens of romantic comedies, and The Holiday is one of her best films. Everyone involved proves why they were a perfect choice for this movie. Even people you don’t naturally associate with romantic comedies, like Jack Black, really work well in this film and give great performances. Both pairings have fantastic chemistry. The Yellow Handkerchief (Hulu)

William Hurt, Kristen Stewart, and Eddie Redmayne star in The Yellow Handkerchief. Three strangers embark on a road trip to reunite Brett (William Hurt) with his ex-wife, May (Maria Bello), who he lost when he went to prison. The film has two main love stories, Brett and May’s, and Gordy (Eddie Redmayne) and Martine (Kristen Stewart)’s romance.

This is one of Stewart’s earlier acting roles and she gives a great performance as Martine. She really captures the teen-ness of being a teen. Eddie Redmayne gives the strongest performance of the cast with his very awkward Gordy portrayal. Despite their stark differences, Gordy and Martine are a good fit and you root for them. The same goes for Brett and May. You’re not sure if she’ll embrace him when they’re finally reunited, but you want them to have a second chance. Set It Up (Netflix)

In Set it Up, Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) try to set their difficult bosses, Kirsten (Lucy Liu) and Rick (Taye Diggs) up to make their work lives easier. In the course of trying to play matchmaker for their bosses, they start to fall for each other.

Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell have the natural enticing chemistry that could make them become this generation’s Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, Richard Gere and Julia Roberts, or Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Their onscreen chemistry makes them an ideal pairing for repeat movies. Set it Up is a Netflix original. Stream it HERE.

Untamed Heart (Prime Video)

Christian Slater and Marisa Tomei star in Untamed Heart, a movie about a shy man who falls for his co-worker. Caroline (Marisa Tomei) and Adam (Christian Slater) both work at a diner, but barely interact due to Adam’s quiet nature. One night after her shift, Adam saves Caroline from an attack by two men. The two become friends and then fall in love. Later Caroline learns that Adam has a heart defect that could cut their time together short.

Caroline and Adam have a sweet, almost teenage-like, romance. This makes it completely heartbreaking when viewers learn that their love story could end soon. Marisa Tomei and Christian Slater bring gentleness to Adam and Caroline’s love story, which makes Untamed Heart a very endearing romance movie. The movie is available on Amazon Prime. Beauty And The Beast (Disney+)

Beauty and the Beast is Disney’s animated classic about two stubborn people learning to look pass their differences to find love. Belle agrees to be the Beast’s prisoner in exchange for her father’s freedom. The Beast was once a vain prince who is now under a curse that turned him into a hideous beast. He only has a short time left to break the curse, or he’ll stay a beast forever. Belle is his last chance at love.

One of them goes to Josh (Israel Broussard), her older sister’s ex-boyfriend, and another to the most popular boy in school, Peter (Noah Centineo). Peter and Lara Jean decide to fake a relationship so that she can avoid talking to Josh about her feelings for him, and so Peter can make his ex-girlfriend jealous. The more time they spend together, the more the fake romance starts to feel real.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is a movie that feels nostalgic. It makes people miss their high school loves, and it makes those still in high school long for it. Cameron Crowe wrote and directed Say Anything, a movie starring John Cusack and Ione Skye about two high school seniors who fall for each other just as school has ended. Diane (Ione Skye) spent most of her high school days working hard and studying, so she barely socialized with other high school students. One day, she attends an after graduation party with Lloyd (John Cusack). The two fall head over heels in love.

Say Anything is about that reckless, all consuming nature of first love. Ione Skye captures the innocent do-gooder Diane well and John Cusack seems completely believable as Lloyd, the guy who falls madly in love with her. Say Anything is available on Hulu. Stream it HERE.

Moonlight (Netflix)

Barry Jenkins directs Moonlight, the Academy Award winning Best Picture. Moonlight follows Chiron (Trevante Rhodes) throughout his life, as he goes from abandoned, reserved child to reserved adult. Chiron experiences love in his life, first from his mother (Naomie Harris), then from his mentor Juan (Mahershala Ali), and from Kevin (Jharrel Jerome/Andre Holland). However, all these relationships end in him feeling even more abandoned.

The main romance of Moonlight is between Kevin and Chiron. They have an encounter as teens that ends badly, but as adults, it seems like they may have a second chance. Moonlight starts with Chiron finding hope and love through his relationship with Juan and ends with him maybe finally being able to experience real intimacy and love as an adult. It’s no secret that Netflix has been a game changer in the landscape of cinema for a number of years. And as the streaming giant expands, so has the pressure for other platforms to build their brand with their own original content for audiences to subscribe to. But To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before breakout star Lana Condor has a bit of a love letter to write about seeing the latest sequel with an audience in a theater.

Back in summer 2018, the book adaptation of Jenny Han’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before was a massive hit among Netflix subscribers. So much so that the site has made a real effort to keep pumping out rom-coms on their platform (many of which starring the film’s love interest, Noah Centineo). Since then, Netflix has produced two upcoming sequels to Lara Jean’s high-school endeavors, including To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, which comes out next week.

Lana Condor caught a screening of To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You at a special advanced screening of the film, and she especially loved the rare experience for the Netflix film. In her words:

Don’t you wonder sometimes why Netflix doesn’t just give its high-profile movies theatrical dates? It seems like P.S. I Still Love You would do so well. Lana Condor gushed to Variety about her experience seeing the romantic sequel, and it sounds like it was a great time. She actually sought out the movie theater experience herself, and the 22-year-old was pleasantly surprised to hear fans reacting to her own character.

On the surface, the To All The Boys movies may seem to be, well, all about the cute boys involved in Lara Jean’s personal love letter leak. And the audience undoubtedly adore them too. Lana Condor even teased that the theater she watched P.S. I Still Love You in actually swung her toward Lara Jean’s new-old love interest, John Ambrose McClaren, played by Jordan Fisher in the movie.

When it comes to seeking out the best romantic movies on Netflix, there are thankfully lots to choose from. From quirky comedies to intense dramas, the streaming giant has subscribers covered with an array of romances that would leave Cupid delighted.

Among them are familiar favorites like PS: I Love You and The Ugly Truth, and Netflix also currently has Rumor Has It…, starring a pre-Yellowstone Kevin Costner and post-Friends Jennifer Aniston. Always Be My Maybe

Comedian Ali Wong and Aquaman’s Randall Park co-wrote (with Michael Golamco) and star in the beyond charming romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe. In the Netflix original movie, Wong and Park respectively play Sasha and Marcus, a pair of long-time friends who abruptly grow apart. Reunited sixteen years later, all the sparks resurface, but can they make a romantic relationship work? I will not give that answer away!

Always Be My Maybe is one of the best romantic movies on Netflix due to its hearty blend of laughs and emotional highs and lows. That is not usually the easiest balance to strike, but it's Always the case here. Ali Wong and Randall Park’s dazzling natural chemistry readily makes viewers believe in Sasha and Marcus’ friendship and time-honored bond. Accordingly, their romantic chemistry registers in equal measure! There is no maybe about it, you need to watch Always Be My Maybe.

Something’s Gotta Give

Hollywood icons Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson spark things up in Something's Gotta Give, playing characters who aren't immediately so fond of each other. It is a hilarious journey to get to true romance in this 2003 rom-com written and directed by romance extraordinaire, Nancy Meyers.

Things start with Diane Keaton’s daughter having been in a relationship with Jack Nicholson’s Harry, a womanizer who never settles down for long. After a heart attack, everything in Harry’s world changes, and meets his match in a grand and humorous fashion in Keaton’s feisty Erica. (Also, starring is a post-Neo, pre-John Wick Keanu Reeves as Harry’s doctor!) It is tough to believe this film is sixteen years old! Something’s Gotta Give doesn't give an inch when it comes to its humor (though it has admittedly been a while since I saw it). If you are into couples starting off cold before turning things warm, then this 2003 rom-com should do the trick.

The Spectacular Now

Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley deliver career-making turns in this heartfelt coming-of-age teen romance, with Teller as the hard-partying Sutter Keely and Woodley as good girl Aimee Finecky. The Spectacular Now is a drama with an intense romance at its core, and everyone who wondered what had critics raving can stream the movie right now on Netflix.

The connection between Sutter and Aimee is definitely palatable, but it is at times prone to tragic consequences. What makes The Spectacular Now one of the best romantic movies on Netflix is that it makes you step back and consider if the core relationship is a good one to be embarked on. In that regard and many more, The Spectacular Now is a thought-provoking must-watch, and Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller’s chemistry will have you wondering when on earth they are planning to re-team again.

Sadece Sen

Another strong early entry, Sadece Sen centers on Ali, a former boxer with a dark past, who is befriended by Hazal, a lovely and effervescent blind woman. As their romance builds, so does the suspense and the surprises. And yes, the chemistry between leads Ibrahim Celikkol and Belçim Bilgin is downright mind-blowing. I do not know about you, but that is an absolute must when it comes to a great movie romance.

You will be hard-pressed to find a more purely romantic movie on Netflix than Sadece Sen. It is one of the best because it hits all of the buttons, and I do mean all of them. There is intrigue, excitement, and even an edge-of-your-seat tension surrounding the fate of its main characters.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Fans seeking out Netflix's more current romance titles will want to get in on the pop culture sensation To All the Boys I've Loved Before, directed by Susan Johnson. The film centers on the chaos that ensues when Lana Condor’s Laura Jean has her love letters leaked to the public by her little sister.

There is a reason that Netflix subscribers who love rom-coms have gone gaga for To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. It is a cute, sublime, and easily re-watchable romantic gem of a movie that possesses loads of breezy '90s-esque charm to anchor this lovely entry. Lara Jean and Noah Centineo’s Peter spark up a lovable romance that the two leads' chemistry sets the stage for. It is no wonder that the smash hit for Netflix is getting a sequel (that will possibly have David Spade feeling feisty) and Susan Johnson returning to executive produce.

Falling Inn Love

Christina Milian’s Gabriela Diaz is on top of the world when two bad things happen at the same time in the romantic Netflix original Falling Inn Love. The design firm that Gabriela works at folds, and she then breaks up with her long-time boyfriend. She is not giving up on happiness, though! After entering a contest in the dead of night, Gabriela wakes up to learn she won an inn! She heads to New Zealand, where friendly locals greet her, yet has a prickly first encounter with Adam Demos’ Jake.

Thankfully, as the title suggests, those feelings prove temporary, and the duo soon begins to fall “inn” love. Falling Inn Love has all of the hallmarks of a feel-good romance replete with loads of charm, laughs, and genuine chemistry between Christina Milian and Adam Demos. It might make you want to start making your own romantic puns after watching. Or not.

About Time

Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams star in this captivating romance that would be one of the best lovey-dovey Netflix offerings in any time period. Told with the complicated framework of a time-travel premise, About Time finds its way to cut into searing emotional territory. Directed by Notting Hill helmer, Richard Curtis, About Time is a tear-jerker for reasons you may not entirely expect, since it is as much about life as it is love and romance. Its central character’s questions about the human existence's various intricacies remain straightforward and relatable.

Worth noting is that this is the better of Rachel McAdams’ romantic time-travel ventures. The actress' other drama in this realm, (The Time Traveler’s Wife), is also available to stream on Netflix. If you have to make a choice, though, you will not want to miss About Time!

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

The global smash-hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon offers up lots of stellar sword fights on top of its powerful romance. The Ang Lee-directed masterpiece is now on Netflix, and it is among the best and most unique romantic movies on the service right now, with a star-studded cast that includes Yun-Fat Chow, Michelle Yeoh, and Ziyi Zhang.

At its core, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a love story on top of being a breathtaking epic. It centers on the theft of a sword amidst a backdrop of romantic intrigue between multiple characters in ancient China. This is one of those movies that never fades after watching, thanks to stellar performances and sweeping choreography. It is one of the most exciting romantic movies on Netflix, with high stakes that lead up to a truly unforgettable ending.

The Lighthouse of the Orcas

Are you looking for romance and a story of self-discovery and maturation? Then our last entry, The Lighthouse of the Orcas, is the romantic Netflix movie for you! The film centers on a mother, Maribel Verdú's Lola, who travels to Patagonia so that her autistic son can connect with wild orcas. Once there, they meet Beto (Joaquín Furriel), an unfriendly ranger who begrudgingly agrees to help.

The romance that ensues between Lola and Beto is sweet, tender, unexpected, and intense. It also plays very authentically, despite its potentially quirky logline. Nothing comes easy to them or for them. The Lighthouse of the Orcas possesses a lot of moving parts, emotional layers, and heavily relies on the unspoken dynamic between its leads to tell its story. Mission obviously accomplished, since it made the cut here.

Just Friends

Let’s head back to the get light-hearted side of romance again! Just Friends is a non-Deadpool-esque Ryan Reynolds vehicle that brings the romance and the laughs. Reynolds plays Chris Brander, a guy who was stuck in the friend zone back in high school by his crush, Jamie (Amy Smart). Many successful years later, a high-flying Chris gets stranded in his hometown, and he soon decides to try to win Jamie's love, once and for all!

Just Friends is sweet and, at times, hilarious to the point of laughing-crying. When it comes to romantic movies with a sense of humor, Just Friends is one of the best feel-good offerings on Netflix.

If you are in the mood for even more romantic movies, I would also suggest Our Lovers, We Need to Talk, Carrie Pilby (directed by To All the Boys I've Loved Before helmer Susan Johnson), and Like Water for Chocolate; a great romantic Netflix quadruple feature if I ever heard one, and something to keep in mind when searching for Netflix’s best romantic movie offerings.

Romance can be hard enough to find in life, so let finding the best romantic movies on Netflix be one less thing filling up your plate. There is a lot of upcoming content heading to Netflix before the end of the year. Hopefully, even more romantic movies will be among them, since everything mentioned above could certainly always use the company!

Netflix has announced that a third movie called To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean is currently in production, back-to-back with the filming of To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. The film franchise’s stars Lana Condor and Noah Centineo took to Instagram to announce the exciting news. Take a look:

That's exciting news for fans! The pair showed their relief at finally being able to share details about To All the Boys 2 & 3 while on the set for project. Along with announcing Always and Forever, Lara Jean, the official release date for P.S. I Still Love You was also disclosed. The first sequel will come to Netflix on February 12, 2020, just in time for Valentine’s Day. P.S. I Still Love You looks to be introducing one of Lara Jean’s past crushes, John Ambrose McClaren, played by Jordan Fisher.

John Ambrose will write Lara back after receiving the personal letter her younger sister sent out to all her crushes and they will become pen pals. Since To All The Boys is based on a book trilogy by Jenny Han, it makes sense for the movies to be three movies. The titles follow the names of the three books exactly as well.

Since the young actors are growing up past the ages of high school students, shooting the films back-to-back is a good call. Lana Condor is already 22 years old and Centineo 23. The main stars are also gaining massive popularity since their breakout roles. Centineo will have a supporting role in November’s Charlie’s Angels and playing He-Man in 2021’s Masters of the Universe. Condor recently starred in Alita: Battle Angel, the Deadly Class TV series and 2020’s Girls Night.

This could be from the third film, as Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, as well as Madeleine Arthur and Trezzo Mahoro from the original cast are onboard. Considering Condor’s longtime boyfriend and fellow actor Anthony De La Torre also joined in and most high school students don’t hang out on nice boats, it’s likely an off day for the cast between shooting two films one-after-one.

The upcoming Masters of the Universe film may enlist Noah Centineo to play He-Man in the planned Sony and Mattel Films movie. The heartthrob has already charmed Netflix users everywhere with his kind eyes and infectious smile, but what happens when he wields the Power Sword?

Noah Centineo is in talks to portray Prince Adam in an upcoming adaptation of the ‘80s toy icon previously played by Dolph Lundgren, per The Wrap. The character is known for his insanely-ripped physique and blond bob, and he's heir to the throne of Eternia. He-Man is being adapted for the big screen by directors Aaron and Adam Nee, and screenwriters of Iron Man Matt Holloway and Art Marcum.

The project has seen multiple script drafts and directors, and Twilight’s Kellan Lutz was also previously set to play He-Man at one point in time. The 22-year-old breakout To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before actor may now lead the project about the heir to the throne of planet Eternia who often fights off the evil wizard Skeletor and teams up with allies Teela, Man-at-Arms, Orko, and The Sorceress.

Since Noah Centineo doesn’t have the typical He-Man look, fans of the character have taken to Twitter to express their concerns for the Masters of the Universe choice. Check it out:

Looks like Noah Centineo is going to have to hit it pretty hard at the gym if he’s going to win the hearts of these fans, who have expressed the importance that He-Man be jacked in the upcoming adaptation of the character. It is true He-Man is largely known for his muscular body, and if Centineo approaches the character with his current look, he will not come off as believable to fans. Since he’s taking on the role, one would expect he’ll commit to looking the part and there certainly could be a massive transformation for the actor on the way.

Not all the online chatter is negative toward the recent casting news. @GeekVibesNation took to the platform to make a valid point about how while the casting of iconic roles in the past have initially angered fans, it doesn’t alway turn out as bad as they think it well. Take a look:

Good point! While many may have written off Michael Keaton as Batman and Heath Ledger as Joker, they’ve gone on to become iconic portrayals of the comic book roles. Actors are given parts for a reason, and Noah Centineo no doubt went through a cutthroat process before being named a frontrunner for the role. We also have no idea about the direction and vision the studios have for the toy line as of yet.

Mattel Films is following in the footsteps of Hasbro and working on numerous film projects based on their popular toys, such as a Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie. You can see Noah Centineo in his upcoming Netflix rom-com The Perfect Date in April and in the Charlie’s Angels reboot this fall.

Noah Centineo is expanding out in the next year, too, in various big screen projects. His future looks bright, as he’s expected to appear in the Charlie’s Angels reboot that has already filmed. This morning, it was also mentioned he’s in talks to play He-Man lead Prince Adam in a new movie project that is just getting off the ground. Plus, he has yet another Netflix rom-com, The Perfect Date, set to hit Netflix in April of 2019. That one will even take him out of high school and into college!

While the He-Man role is unconfirmed for now, if it happens it would be a big deal for Noah Centineo, as it would mark the actor branching out even further from his TV and streaming roots. Sierra Burgess Is A Loser

Sierra Burgess Is A Loser is one of Netflix’s many entries into the high school rom-com genre. This one is actually kind of also about catfishing and sisterhead, as its biggest plotline is arguably more about the relationship between Shannon Purser’s Sierra and Kristine Froseth’s Veronica than it is about boys.

Caught in the middle is Noah Centineo’s Jamey, who plays football and thinks he’s into Veronica when he’s really into Sierra. Or some hybrid of them both. I’ll leave you to figure out where the rest of that story goes.

Jumping into the world of TV, Noah Centineo actually joined T@gged in Season 2, appearing as Hawk Carter. The show has been a bit of a change of pace for the actor, as it’s a psychological thriller rather than a typical rom-com.

T@gged has had an interesting history. Originally, it appeared as a web series on go90, but the platform is now-defunct. Season 3 actually moved to Hulu, which means you can catch Noah Centineo on multiple streaming platforms these days.

The Fosters

While Noah Centineo has actually been acting since he was a kid, his actual big break was in The Fosters, a Freeform TV series that ran for five seasons before ultimately getting cancelled back in 2018 after a three-episode finale aired. On the show, Centineo played major character Jesus Adams Foster, but don’t fret if you start watching streaming the drama on Netflix and don’t see hide nor hair of the actor.

That’s because Noah Centineo actually joined The Fosters in Season 3, taking over for Jake T. Austin. The latter actor eventually revealed he left the Freeform drama due to how much screentime he was getting. Centineo didn’t have the same probably and ended up playing the character until the show’s conclusion. If you've been a fan of Centineo since his Freeform days, bravo, you were probably on to the actor's charm well ahead of most people reading this list.

Good Trouble

There's even better news, because The Fosters has a new spinoff called Good Trouble focusing on foster siblings Callie Adams Foster and Mariana Adams Foster after they relocate to Los Angeles. How does Noah Centineo factor in? Thanks to his film and Netflix work, he's not a lead in the Freeform spinoff. However, he is in Season 1 of the new 2019 series, and yes, he's shirtless once more in his Good Trouble debut, which happened back in February.  If you've wanted to know what Jesus has been up to since The Fosters wrapped, you should definitely check the new series out.

Good Trouble has already been renewed for Season 2, so hopefully we'll get the chance to catch up with Jesus some more--especially given Centineo is only credited for two Season 1 guest starring eps. Although, it should be noted that since Season 1 is still currently airing, it could be some time before we get the chance to see more from the actor on the cable channel series. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

If you are well aware of the Noah Centineo heartthrob, there’s a good chance you caught him first in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. This was the actor’s breakthrough role on Netflix and the one that has made Noah Centineo a household name--at least in some households. Plus, back in December the subscription streaming service announced the film will be getting a sequel, so this isn't the last we've heard from these characters.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before already used some of the story from Jenny Han’s popular book sequel P.S. I Still Love You. However, that’s not a half-cooked title and we’re hoping the sequel sticks with the name, and Noah Centineo as Peter, of course. All of Jenny Han's books in this particular series focus on Lara Jean and Peter's complex relationship as they keep pushing forward toward adulthood, so I would assume Centineo will be back for round 2.

Thanks to finding firm footing in the acting biz on streaming services, it’s likely we’ll be seeing much more of Noah Centineo whether or not his big screen ventures work out. Either way, you should have plenty of projects to indulge in for now and we'll keep you updated regarding any other projects the actor ultimately signs on for.

Once upon a time, romantic comedies were everywhere! Between Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan, Matthew McConaughey and Adam Sandler, actors could build their careers around the genre. In 2001, rom-coms were just as saturated as today’s superhero flicks, as The Princess Diaries, Legally Blonde, Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Wedding Planner, Kate and Leopold (and more) all debuted. It was a winning formula that continued to reach audiences and create timeless classics time after time.

Then the formula tired. Maybe audiences had seen just enough women working at fashion magazines and touching grand gestures her guy thinks up by the end? Fewer rom-coms graced the screen and more badass female heroines started dominating blockbuster franchises. But in 2019, Hollywood says “Why not both?” With What Men Want and Isn’t It Romantic coming to theaters within a week of each other and more upcoming rom-com projects soon on the way, the genre is making a comeback.

Why are more rom-coms standing in front of audiences asking us to love them… again? There’s a few reasons, let's break it down:

Netflix Took The Leap

Buzz over the return of the genre started brewing in summer 2018 when a string of Netflix rom-com originals hit the streaming service. People were watching and talking about films such as Set It Up and To All The Boys I Loved Before, and praising them for their fun and genuine takes on the genre. The streaming giant's accessibility had these rom-coms going viral at a time when the genre hadn’t been adored by the mainstream in a while.

Netflix didn’t seem to be taking a significant risk in producing these rom-coms either because it makes everything. Rom-coms were the releases that were sticking, and while users weren’t taking much of a risk either to sit on their couch and choose a lighthearted love story for movie night, the success of these titles – namely with To All The Boys, which is already getting a sequel – means an interest had clearly sparked.

Crazy Rich Asians Made A Cash Splash

Within the same week of the release of All The Boys Who Loved Before, Crazy Rich Asians opened in theaters to an impressive No. 1 opening weekend, later scoring over $238 million worldwide and becoming the first big hit for the genre since 2009’s The Proposal.

Yes, Crazy Rich Asians delivered on the first all-Asian cast in two decades but the movie was distinctly a romantic comedy style flick and it worked. It didn’t completely feel recycled or by-the-numbers because new faces were being showcased, it was exploring a culture the genre doesn’t typically go for and the “happily ever after” wasn’t the guy-gets-girl formula; it centered on the female protagonist’s own growth in her sense of self, amidst a few lovable clichés. Now, filmmakers will be looking at the success story of Crazy Rich Asians, especially considering how cheap for the studio to make ($30 million) and try to replicate it in new ways. Bok, bok, bitches! The rom-com is back and Crazy Rich Asians showcased that there is an audience for it in movie theaters.

They're Rewritten For A New Perspective

One reason the rom-com became irrelevant in recent years was because how overdone it started to feel. The same actors, writers and filmmakers kept cranking out entries for the genre, and after a while they tired the same storylines. What defines this new resurgence is how fresh and inclusive it feels. While audiences may be seeing some of the same clichés and tropes of the genre in these new films, they've never been told in the mainstream from these perspectives before, so moviegoers are more energized to check them out. Hollywood is selling a different kind of rom-com and the trend has kept moving forward. Since the industry is aware more then ever that audiences demand more from the stories being presented, they seem to be made with more thoughtfulness and relevance.

What Men Want is an interesting example because it actually borrows from the premise of the early 2000s romantic comedy What Women Want, starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. It flips the dialogue by making it a woman who hears thoughts of men instead of the other way around. It also attempts to act as commentary for the struggles of women in male-dominated industries. Both ideas have been used before in rom-coms, literally in another movie of similar title and since women in this genre are constantly faced with some sort of work-related struggle. It feels different because a black woman’s perspective is in the mix, it's generally more aware of itself and there’s new blood taking hold.

There's A Space To Let In Diversity

Coming down the pipeline are rom-coms coming from a range of new voices such as Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis starring as girlfriends in a holiday-set TriStar film Happiest Season and Billy Eichner’s recently announced gay rom-com to be produced by Judd Apatow under Universal. Insecure’s Issa Rae and Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani are also teaming up to star in Paramount’s Lovebirds, about a couple who are caught in a murder mystery. Fresh Off The Boat’s Randall Park and comedian Ali Wong will also star in Always Be My Maybe, and Grownish’s Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton will star in A Sun is Also a Star.

In an industry constantly criticized for being too white, rom-coms certainly used to be a top offender. With the demand for new voices and the fact that there are so many making their way into the mainstream, the rom-com is becoming a great place to start. As said before, the genre doesn’t typically cost too much to produce, and usually these movies will make their money back. When interest in supporting diversity is at an all-time high, there’s room for them to become blockbusters too, and for different voices to dominate a once weary genre.

There's A Desire For Escapism and Predictability

Audiences also aren’t taking a huge risk when they buy a ticket for a rom-com because the formula is still there nine times out of ten. It’s comforting to walk into a movie knowing full well there will probably be some feel-good happy ending and everything will wrap up nice and tightly in a bow.

In a time when something like Avengers: Infinity War shocked audiences, the horror genre is remerging, dramas are combatting the intense issues and emotions of the day, and keeping up with cinematic universes sometimes asks a lot from fans to follow along, the romantic comedy is a comfy place for moviegoers to go again. It’s a different type of escapism that is fun, potentially relatable and made for repeated viewings if done right.
