The superhero genre continues to be wildly popular, but things are still in flux on the DC side of things. Co-CEO James Gunn has been crafting the DC Universe, with the first slate of projects titled Gods and Monsters (and streaming with a HBO Max subscription). Fans have endless questions about which actors will play roles in upcoming DC movies, and Tom Cavanagh recently offered his two cents about either him or his Flash co-star Grant Gustin reprising their roles in the newly formed shared universe.

The Flash show (which is streaming with a Netflix subscription) ran for a whopping nine seasons on The CW. Plenty of fans who watched the DC movies in order had hoped the cast would be able to play those roles on the big screen, but it never happened in the DCEU. In CinemaBlend's interview with Cavanagh about the Acorn series You're Killing Me, he spoke about the idea of Grant Gustin playing Flash in the DCU, joking:

Points were made. Grant Gustin has expressed interest in reprising his role as Barry Allen/ The Flash in the DCU. And as Cavanagh pointed out, who wouldn't want to work James Gunn on a superhero project? The Ed actor counts himself, and is actively campaigning to play his role Reverse-Flash in the burgeoning shared universe. I mean, can you blame him?

It's currently unclear who will be playing The Flash in the DCU, as the new shared universe is still in its infancy. There are countless theories and suggestions coming from the fans, including Grant Gustin. During our same talk with Cavanagh, he explained why his co-star would be great in DC role. In his words:

James Gunn is similarly nerdy by nature, so it certainly sounds like he and Grant Gustin would get along. Whether or not the Glee alum is actually given a role in the DCU remains to be seen, but it's definitely fun to see just how well-versed he is in the source material. No wonder he made such a memorable Barry Allen.

Despite how long Grant Gustin played The Flash, he never got to go from the small to silver screen. Fans were especially bummed when he didn't even get a cameo in the Flash movie. Tom Cavanagh went on to share how much both he and his co-star would like to join the DCU in any capacity, offering:

He's certainly not playing hard to get. But with the possibilities of the new DCU fairly endless given its infancy, why try to put yourself into one slot? Both Gustin and Cavanagh have proven themselves with genre work, so perhaps they'll get their wish and be hired by James Gunn for a future role. Fingers crossed.

Murder mysteries are all the rage right now, with a bevy of options that cover all spectrums of tone, from dark and seedy procedurals to more light-hearted fare. Tom Cavanagh has done both, including his latest series You’re Killing Me, which premieres on the 2026 TV schedule May 18. It stars Brooke Shields as an author who teams up with an aspiring true crime podcaster (Amalia Williamson) to solve a murder. Cavanagh plays the lead detective, and he spoke to CinemaBlend about the use of humor in You’re Killing Me.

While Tom Cavanagh has some experience in the world of procedural dramas, series like Law & Order come with a much darker tone than Acorn TV’s upcoming cozy mystery series. Brooke Shields and the rest of the cast inject quite a bit of humor into the fatal plotlines, but for Cavanagh, that only adds to the series’ appeal. He told CinemaBlend:

Using the Robert Redford classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a great way to illustrate how You’re Killing Me can incorporate laughs into even the most dire situations. The comedic elements in his new show are prominent, but The Flash actor said those moments don’t take anything away from the seriousness of the plot. He continued:

The fact that You’re Killing Me isn’t as heavy as some series that Tom Cavanagh has been a part of isn’t all that surprising, given its lead actress. Sure, Brooke Shields can bring the drama, like in her emotional return to When Calls the Heart, but her comedic talents have been apparent from when she became a side character on Friends to her more recent projects like the Netflix rom-com Mother of the Bride.

The superhero genre has been dominating the entertainment world for years, and is showing no signs of slowing down. In addition to shared universes like the MCU and DCU (the latter of which is streaming with a HBO Max subscription), there's also been other titles set outside of them. Case in point: The CW's Arrowverse, including The Flash. Actor Tom Cavanagh famously played Reverse-Flash in that Speedster series, although it turns out that at one point he completely peed in his costume thanks to a design error. Ouch.

The Flash (which is streaming with a Netflix subscription) ran for a whopping nine seasons, so you would think that they would have made the design of superhero suits would have been a streamlined experience. But that wasn't the case, and Cavanagh shared at Fan Expo Denver (via ThePopVerse) that he ended up having an emergency situation while filming one of the Arrowverse crossovers. As he told it:

That definitely sounds like a design issue. But this bathroom-related issue is not exclusive to Tom Cavanagh's costume as Reverse-Flash. It's a common issue for actors lucky enough to take on superhero roles. Christian Bale's advice to fellow Batman Ben Affleck was to make sure he could still use the bathroom in costume, given the long and grueling hours on set. So this is an issue that's going back years and across various franchises.

Unfortunately, Cavanagh's story about being unable to use the bathroom resulted in a somewhat humiliating moment on set. As he went on to share with the convention audience:

Yikes. Despite how badass Cavanagh looked as Reverse-Flash, the reality of wearing his signature suit was far less glamorous... especially when he ended up going to the bathroom while still wearing it. I sure hope these costumes were easily washed because now I'm just picturing him having to wear a urine-soaked look while continuing to film as Eobard Thawne / Reverse-Flash.

As previously mentioned, this design flaw seems fairly common for actors wearing custom superhero suits. Recently Tessa Thompson and Jennifer Lawrence shared stories about being asked to pee into a funnel while suited up as Valkyrie and Mystique respectively. But at least they didn't have an accident in their costumes.

The Flash is streaming in its entirety over on Netflix. All new DC projects are landing on HBO Max nowadays, including Creature Commandos, Peacemaker Season 2, and Superman. Hopefully James Gunn and company are making sure actors can use the bathroom nowadays.

There once was a time when the Arrowverse was the best live-action franchise DC had going for it, but it's a long-gone era here in 2025, and everyone is looking ahead to James Gunn's vision for upcoming DCU projects. Even so, there's a big multiverse out there, and shows like The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow still have fans calling for more, so it's not too wild to foresee a day where fans with Max subscriptions could one day get an Arrowverse movie, and it seems like Grant Gustin and others are up for it.

Candice Patton, Tom Cavanagh, and Danielle Panabaker joined up with Gustin for Fan Expo Cleveland, and they had some encouraging takes on whether they'd appear in a hypothetical Arrowverse movie. CinemaBlend's Laura Hurley attended the convention and can confirm that the cast responded to the idea almost in unison with positive thoughts:

• Grant Gustin: "Yeah."
• Tom Cavanagh: "100%, absolutely."
• Danielle Panabaker: "I'm available!"
• Grant Gustin: "We are actors with families."
• Candice Patton: "We got bills to pay!"
• Tom Cavanagh: "We are all available! We are in, fully in!"

It's only been about two years since the series ended, but apparently, a good chunk of the stars are interested in making a comeback for an Arrowverse movie if that's a possibility. The Flash did leave the door open for future adventures in its finale, so it wouldn't be too hard to pull them back into the mix for a movie, at least speaking from a story standpoint. I would certainly love to see more with Barry's kids, as we only just scratched the surface of what they were capable of.

I don't think it's a question of whether fans want to see The Flash crew back in action, because YES. But I think it's fair to say we have to wonder if any current DC execs want that to happen. Let's not forget that Grant Gustin was snubbed from appearing in The Flash movie, despite DC having Ezra Miller appear in The CW series years prior. It felt like a big oversight, considering The Flash's popularity as a TV series had to play some role in the movie getting a feature film in the first place.

Beyond that, it seems everything in DC is shifting under James Gunn's vision, with his upcoming Superman movie primed to really get the new era underway. With so much focus on building up the movie side of DC and the Arrowverse completely dying out with the conclusion of Superman & Lois, I don't like the odds of any revival happening, but I would love to see it happen all the same.

While we have no idea if The Flash will ever return in any form, The CW's series is available to stream with a Netflix subscription. While the latter seasons are hit and miss, I still stand by it as one of the best superhero shows ever to grace television, and I would love to experience it for the first time all over again if I had the chance.

2023 was a momentous year for the DC Comics superhero The Flash. First, the same-named, Grant Gustin-led TV series ended after nine seasons, and then a month later, Ezra Miller finally got to take center stage as Barry Allen in the also-same-named movie following his appearances in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and both cuts of Justice League (you can stream those DC movies in order with a Max subscription). It’s now been a little over a year and a half since The Flash movie played in theaters, and Tom Cavanagh, who played Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. Reverse-Flash, on the TV series, shared what he thought was a “good call” for making Miller’s Barry stand out from Gustin’s.

During a Q&A and FAN Expo Portland (via MrHistorican), Cavanagh, who also played multiple versions of Harrison Wells over the course of nine seasons, shared that he’s seen The Flash movie, unlike his former co-star Danielle Panabaker, who was seated next to him. He had mostly positive things to say about the flick, particularly concerning Miller’s performance, starting with the following:

While saying that Ezra Miller’s Barry isn’t as intelligent as Grant Gustin’s Barry might sound like a criticism at first, Tom Cavanagh found it a refreshing creative choice. Although frankly, Gustin’s Barry wasn’t all that different when he started out as the Scarlet Speedster in the early Arrowverse days. While Miller’s Barry has also been fighting crime for a long time when The Flash movie begins, he’s not nearly as experienced as his TV counterpart. (Side note, let’s not forget that these two briefly spent some time with each other during the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover in early 2020.)

So ultimately, Cavanagh saw this characterization tweak as the right move for the DCEU’s Barry Allen. He continued to share his thoughts about The Flash movie thusly:

Although he didn’t outright state it, it sounds like he didn’t find the second half of The Flash nearly as strong as the first half. That includes his indirect mention of the climactic multiverse sequence packed with DC cameos, which was one of the reasons the movie’s CGI was criticized. Tom Cavanagh’s also correct that The Flash’s marketing leaned heavily on Michael Keaton’s Batman, which was surely a combination of Batman’s inherent popularity, how big a deal Keaton’s return to the cape and cowl was, and to draw attention away from the numerous controversies surrounding Miller, who didn’t participate in the movie’s press tour. In any case, Cavanagh largely enjoyed watching The Flash movie, though he’s obviously going to be biased when it comes to his all-time favorite adaptation of the Scarlet Speedster’s lore.

There are no plans for Ezra Miller to reprise The Flash in upcoming DC movies, but given how popular this character is, I find it hard to believe that another actor won’t be selected to inhabit the role in this new DC Universe franchise. As for Tom Cavanagh, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that he got to leave one final mark on the Arrowverse when he played Gordon Godfrey in Superman & Lois’ final season, which can now be streamed on Max.

I cannot count how many times Scrubs has come up when discussing the best TV sitcoms of all time. Over the course of nine seasons (and two networks), the Zach Braff-led medical comedy introduced audiences to some of the most iconic and endearing small-screen characters of the past 25 years, as well as some legendary celebrity guests. With Academy Award winners, Star Wars alumni, and on-the-rise comedians, Sacred Heart Hospital was a hopping place when these 32 actors popped up on Scrubs.

Brendan Fraser

Though Brendan Fraser is best known for roles in movies like The Mummy, The Whale, and Encino Man, the Oscar winner played a small yet pivotal role as Ben Sullivan on Scrubs. Dr. Cox’s (John C. McGinley) brother-in-law, Ben was at the center of several of the best episodes of Scrubs as well as one of the most emotional TV moments of all time. Seriously, Ben is one of the best characters to ever appear on the show, which is saying a lot.

Michael J. Fox

One of several Spin City cast members to show up on Scrubs, Michael J. Fox appeared in a pair of episodes during the show’s third season. Taking on the role of Dr. Kevin Casey, a confident and talented doctor and surgeon dealing with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Ryan Reynolds

Before he was leading some of the best Marvel movies and showing up in great romantic comedies, Ryan Reynolds had a one-off appearance on Scrubs. Showing up in the show’s second season, Reynolds played Spence, J.D. (Zach Braff) and Turk’s (Donald Faison) college friend who comes to visit while in town for a wedding.

Courteney Cox

A few years after Friends came to an end and a few months before Cougar Town premiered, Courteney Cox had a brief fun on Scrubs. During her handful of appearances in the show’s eighth season, Cox played Dr. Taylor Maddox, the new Sacred Heart chief of medicine following Dr. Kelso’s (Ken Jenkins) sudden departure.

Dick Van Dyke

Probably the Scrubs celebrity guest with the most prolific career, Dick Van Dyke showed up for a single episode partway through the show’s second season. The legendary actor/singer/dancer took on the role of Dr. Doug Townshend, a Sacred Heart doctor who no longer wanted to stick around and keep up with technology and decided to retire.

Elizabeth Banks

In terms of guest spots, few actors appeared in as many episodes as Elizabeth Banks. Between Seasons 5 and 8, Banks popped up in a total of 15 episodes as Dr. Kim Briggs, a urologist at another hospital who eventually became the mother of J.D.’s son before it was all said and done.

Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell was just about everywhere in the 2000s, including Scrubs. The In Bruges actor played Billy Callahan, an Irishman who was sticking around to watch over a man he knocked out in a bar fight, partway through Season 4. Though his arrival caused a stir at Sacred Heart, it all eventually worked out in the end.

Aziz Ansari

Before he became one of the biggest comedians on the planet thanks to Parks and Recreation and Master of None, Aziz Ansari had a supporting role on Scrubs. Ansari appeared throughout the show’s eighth season where he played Dr. Ed Dhandapani, one of J.D.’s young interns, and possibly the laziest person at Sacred Heart.

Heather Graham

A major player throughout Scrubs Season 4, Heather Graham took on the role of Dr. Molly Clock, a psychiatrist at Sacre Heart who kept referring to J.D. as “Johnny.” She appeared in nine episodes during her single-season run on the show.

Billy Dee Williams

Billy Dee Williams, of Star Wars and Brian’s Song fame, showed up in a single episode of Scrubs Season 5. But like other guest stars, Williams played himself, or at least a version that was Julie Quinn’s (Mandy Moore) godfather.

Matthew Perry

The late Matthew Perry (appearing alongside his real-life father, John Bennett Perry) showed up for an episode of Scrubs back in the show’s fourth season. In his one-off appearance, Perry played Murray Marks, a man who comes to Sacred Heart Hospital to donate a kidney to his ailing father.

Mandy Moore

Several years before she led another all-time great NBC series, This Is Us, Mandy Moore showed up on Scrubs as Julie Quinn. Though she only appeared on a pair of episodes during the show’s fifth season, Moore’s character made quite an impact on the staff at Sacred Heart, especially J.D. Their romance was short-lived, but one the hopeless romantic doctor wouldn’t forget.

Richard Kind

Harvey Corman is definitely one of the most iconic (and annoying) guest characters on Scrubs, and that’s all thanks to the brilliant work by Richard Kind. A hypochondriac like no other, Corman was in and out of Sacred Heart Hospital with all kinds of issues and medical emergencies throughout Seasons 2 through 4.

Masi Oka

Before having a massive breakout role on Heroes, Masi Oka appeared on Scrubs off and on between Seasons 1 and 4, in which he took on the role of a lab tech named Franklyn. Though he only appeared in a handful of episodes before leaving the show, Oka’s character showed up in some of the most memorable moments in Scrubs history.

Tom Cavanagh

In addition to leading the comedy series Ed, Tom Cavanagh also had a sizable guest spot on Scrubs. Every once in a while, Cavanagh would show up as J.D.’s older brother, Dan Dorian. There for a life, a shoulder to cry on, or an important life lesson, Dan was there for some of his brother’s most trying moments.

Tara Reid

Tara Reid was part of the Scrubs cast for 11 episodes, with all but one coming from the show’s third season. During her run, Reid took on the role of Danni Sullivan, Ben Sullivan’s younger sister, who became one of J.D.’s many girlfriends at one point.

Phill Lewis

Phill Lewis has appeared just about everywhere throughout his prolific TV career, including Sacred Heart Hospital for a stretch. During his run on Scrubs, Lewis portrayed Hooch, an orthopedic surgeon with a wild and dangerous side, to say the very least.

Jason Bateman

Jason Bateman popped up for a single episode of Scrubs during the show’s fifth season. During his one-off appearance, Bateman plays Mr. Sutton, a garbageman who refuses to thank J.D. after being treated.

John Ritter

The late John Ritter showed up in two episodes of Scrubs as Sam Dorian, J.D.’s dad. The cash-strapped and constantly unemployed character had his issues, but still cared deeply for his song.

Taran Killam

Before landing a steady gig on Saturday Night Live, Taran Killam had a recurring role on Scrubs during the show’s penultimate season. Killam took on the role of Jimmy, one of J.D.’s interns at Sacred Heart.

Jimmie Walker

Jimmie Walker, best known for his portrayal of J.J. Evans and his “Dynomite” catchphrase from Good Times, appeared in two episodes of Scrubs. During the show’s first season, Walker played himself as he appeared in two of the J.D.’s signature daydreams.

Sean Hayes

Best known for his roles as Jack McFarland on Will & Grace, Sean Hayes has made a ton of other appearances over the years. This includes Scrubs, where he played Nick Murdoch, an intern whose time at Sacred Heart was shortlived because he couldn’t handle the stress and emotional toll of watching a young patient’s slow demise under his care.

Ricky Schroder

Ricky Schroder’s career got off to a hot start as a child actor, including multiple appearances and a leading role on Silver Spoons, one of the most beloved sitcoms of the ‘80s. That career would continue well into adulthood for the former teenage star, including a four-episode turn on Scrubs. During the show’s second season, Schroder played Paul Flower, a male nurse Elliott Reid (Sarah Chalke) was embarrassed to admit she was dating.

Kelli Williams

If you look at the list of the best TV shows of all time, you’ll find multiple featuring the work of Kelli Williams. In addition to Law & Order, Quantum Leap, The Practice, and Ally McBeal, there’s also Scrubs. During her two episodes back in 2001, Williams played Kristen Murphy, a surgical student at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Cheryl Hines

In the middle of her run as Larry David’s wife on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Cheryl Hines made a brief appearance on Scrubs. During a single episode in the show’s fifth season, Hines played Paige Cox, Dr. Perry Cox’s very religious sister who shows up at Sacred Heart Hospital and forces the temperamental doctor to think about memories he long locked away in the deepest and most secure vaults of his mind.

Dave Foley

Dave Foley, best known for his time on The Kids in the Hall and movies like A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2, had a pair of appearances on Scrubs during the middle of the show’s nine-season run. Foley took on the role of Dr. Lester Hedrick, a Sacred Heart grief counselor who was like a softer, kinder, and more easy-going mentor for J.D. when compared to the easily angered and annoyed Dr. Cox.

Julianna Margulies

E.R. wasn’t the only NBC-based show set in a hospital to feature the work of Julianna Margulies, as she also popped up on Scrubs for a couple of episodes during the show’s fourth season. But instead of playing a doctor this time, Margulies took on the role of Jenna Broderick, a candidate for the scariest lawyer award. The malpractice attorney had a habit of showing up and causing trouble, especially with J.D. Not much is known about the character’s whereabouts about J.D. put an end to things.

Keri Russell

Keri Russell, best known for her work on shows like Felicity and The Americans, had a short run on Scrubs, appearing in two episodes. In the show’s sixth season, Russell took on the role of Melody O’Harra, Elliott’s sorority sister who shows up and brings her easy-go-lucky personality and philosophy on life to the core group of the cast, but mostly J.D.

Heather Locklear

Heather Locklear added Scrubs to her long list of TV credits when she appeared for a pair of episodes during the show’s second season. During her time on the show, Locklear played Julie Keaton, a pharmaceutical rep who showed up at Sacred Heart Hospital to sell her company’s latest and greatest product. But she got more than she could chew when she started a relationship with Dr. Perry Cox, which provided a short-lived reprieve for everyone who had grown tired of his anger and outbursts while making rounds.

Christopher Meloni

Christopher Meloni played one of the most sadistic prisoners in the Oz cast as well as a dedicated and complicated detective on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, but did you know he played a pediatrician on Scrubs? Well, that was the case for an episode during the show’s third season in which he played Dr. David Norris, Dr. Cox and Jordan Sullivan’s (Christa Miller) son’s pediatrician. Though a far stretch from his turn as Chris Keller on the landmark HBO series, Dr. Norris was still a wild card, to say the very least.

Amy Smart

Amy Smart showed up in movies like Varsity Blues, Road Trip, and The Butterfly Effect throughout the late ‘90s and early 2000s, but she also had quite a few TV appearances during that stretch of time. This included a spot on Scrubs as Jamie Moyer, aka “Tasty Coma Wife,” the wife of a car crash victim. This led to one of J.D.’s most ridiculous relationships on the series, which is saying something.

Nicole Sullivan

Mad TV star Nicole Sullivan appeared in a handful of episodes of Scrubs. Sullivan played Jill Tracy, a recurring troubled patient at Sacred Heart who made an impact on everyone she encountered, for better or worse. Her death, which ultimately led to one of the show’s most heartbreaking sequences (it features The Fray’s “How To Save a Life”), is one that had a massive impact on the medical staff for years to come.

Superman & Lois is soaring to the end of its run, as there are currently just two episodes left in the fourth and final season. Despite its time on the 2024 TV schedule winding down, the superhero series has still been delivering some excellent stories. And, this week, it finally ushered in the return of DC veteran Tom Cavanagh, who appeared in a brand-now role that was perfect. Yet, as cool as that was, I was a bit more concerned with a heartbreaking reveal involving Clark Kent.

Who Did Tom Cavanagh Play On Superman And Lois?

Those who’ve been plugged into the world of DCTV over the past several years surely know that Mr. Cavanagh is best known for his work on the Arrowverse show The Flash. It was there that he played the various iterations of Harrison Wells as well as Eobard Thawne a.k.a The Reverse Flash. When it was reported that Cavanagh would play a role during S&L Season 4, it was also confirmed that he wouldn’t be reprising his famous Big Bad. The producers later revealed, though, that he’d be playing an important and “fun” role.

Well, that definitely proved to be the case, as the Canadian actor took on the role of media pundit Gordon Godfrey. Comic book fans may recognize the character for historically being an ally of the Apokolips dictator Darkseid, who assumes the role of a human newscaster to besmirch superheroes. It’s unclear if this iteration of Godfrey has such ties, though he still proves to be antagonistic towards Lois Lane when moderating a debate between her and Lex Luthor. The character is also just as snarky and arrogant as you’d imagine.

It obviously makes sense that Tom Cavanagh – who’s also directed episodes of Superman & Lois – wouldn’t be playing Wells or Thawne here, especially since S&L was retconned out of the Arrowverse’s continuity back in Season 2. As delightful as he was in that role, Cavanagh really shines as Godfrey, who barely hides his biases when reporting. It’s a different kind of villainous role for Cavanagh, as it’s a bit more understated. Nevertheless, he shines and, hopefully, he still returns to the series finale as originally intended.

But, now that we’re done discussing this new journalistic opponent for the titular couple, it’s time to address something else. There’s the matter of that update regarding the Man of Steel’s mortality.

Clark Kent Received Some Bad News From John Henry Irons

Since Clark was revived with the help of late father-in-law Sam Lane’s heart, his body hasn’t been operating at 100%. He hasn’t been as strong, he’s not hearing as well and he’s even been developing gray hairs. John Henry Irons – who returned this week after being absent for the past few episodes – noticed that Clark seemed off after he slowly reacted when a brick was thrown through the window of the Smallville Gazette. So, he offered to run tests on Clark.

Irons ultimately discovered that Sam’s heart isn’t compatible with Clark’s extraterrestrial anatomy and that as a result, his powers are starting to fade. And, in time, the hero’s abilities will be gone for good, and his heart will stop working. It was sad to watch that reveal play out, especially considering that during the same episode, Lois learned that she was cancer free. Eventually, the two also told their sons, Jonathan and Jordan, about Clark’s medical issue, which resulted in an emotional scene involving the Kent family.

While I’ve been speculating that this might happen, it’s no less tragic to know that Clark received the official diagnosis. There’s a good chance that the show might end with the Kent patriarch’s powers going away completely, while Jonathan and Jordan take on the reigns as the super sons. (And, during this week’s episode, the two proved their merits as teammates when they joined forces to destroy Natalie Irons’ corrupted powersuit.) All in all, I’m very eager to see what lies ahead for Clark amid the final two episodes of the show. Of course, I’ll also be keeping an eye out for any further appearances from Tom Cavanagh’s appropriately smarmy Gordon Godfrey.

Superman & Lois airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW, and new episodes are also available to stream on the network’s website. Those who need to catch up on the series can stream the first three seasons using a Max subscription as well. Also, as the family drama series winds down, read up on upcoming DC shows.

Although the Arrowverse proper came to a close last year when The Flash ended after nine seasons, there’s still one DC TV show tangentially tied to that franchise left on The CW to finish out its run. Superman & Lois Season 4 is weeks away from premiering on the 2024 TV schedule, and among the things fans can look forward to is The Flash alum Tom Cavanagh appearing in the series finale. However, if you were hoping that this meant that Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. Reverse-Flash, would be stopping by Superman & Lois’ Earth, sorry to disappoint you, but that’s not happening.

Superman & Lois showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher informed EW that Cavanagh is not stopping by Season 4 to play another version of Barry Allen’s longtime arch-nemesis, nor will he play a new version of Harrison Wells. However, the new character he’s playing does hail from DC Comics lore, and it sounds like they’re a big deal. In Fletcher’s words:

Obviously he’s exaggerating when he says 18 seasons, although it is mentioned in the article that he and Helbing were hoping Superman & Lois would run for at least seven seasons. Still, it is nice that The CW renewed the series for a fourth and final season so that they could end it on their terms rather than leave a lot of lingering plot threads behind, which also meant getting to squeeze in Cavanagh before all was said and done. The actor previously directed Season 1’s “Last Sons of Krypton” and Season 3’s “Closer,” and he’ll also be balancing his performing duties with helming Superman & Lois’ series finale, which is titled “It Went By So Fast.”

While there’s no way we can predict whom Tom Cavanagh will play in Superman & Lois’ last episode, I am more intrigued about their identity following Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher’s tease, as they clearly wanted this character to stick around for a long time. Maybe if their dream of a seven-season run had been granted, we would have seen this person become a recurring player on Superman & Lois, or perhaps even join the main cast. Alas, that’s not the way the cards were dealt in the end, but at least this mystery DC character will get to shine on the small screen for a little bit in the near future.

As a result of budget cuts, Superman & Lois Season 4 is comprised of just 10 episodes, and only Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Alex Garfin, Michael Bishop and Michael Cudlitz, who debuted as Lex Luthor towards the end of Season 3, will be credited as main cast members. However, Dylan Walsh, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Erik Valdez, Inde Navarrette, Wolé Parks, Tayler Buck and Sofia Hasmik will all still appear in Season 4, just in fewer episodes. Along with Tom Cavanagh, other new faces stopping by Superman & Lois this season include Yvonne Chapman’s Amanda McCoy and Douglas Smith’s Jimmy Olsen.

As one of the many shows ending and canceled in 2024, Superman & Lois is going big for its final season. The final CW DC show is set to premiere its fourth season this fall on the 2024 TV schedule and will adapt the “Death of Superman” storyline. It will also bring in Tom Cavanagh for the series finale, and just like his role on The Flash, the possibilities are endless.

Cavanagh is best known for playing the many variations of Harrison Wells on The Flash, as well as Reverse-Flash, a.k.a. Eobard Thawne. While it’s already been established that Superman & Lois is not part of the main Arrowverse, his role in the series is still being kept under wraps. Whether it will be a new character or yet another Wells, executive producer Brent Fletcher told TVLine teased just what role Cavanagh’s final CW DC appearance will be:

It should be pointed out that Arrow’s David Ramsey guest starred on Superman & Lois as John Diggle, but a different John Diggle. Harrison Wells, however, was created for The Flash, though that doesn't necessarily mean this Earth doesn't have its own Wells. Also, Eobard Thawne and Reverse-Flash are from the comics, so that could be a possibility. At this point, Cavanagh could very likely play just about any DC character because of his range, and knowing that it is the most “Tom Cavanagh character of all-time” will make it that much more exciting.

Little is known about Superman & Lois' series finale, and details probably won’t be released until closer to the episode’s premiere. If Cavanagh’s character isn’t revealed prior to the finale, or at least until it gets close to the finale, it’s possible the show will be leading up to his appearance, depending on how big of a part he plays. The wait will definitely be worth it, though, because any character he plays is an immediate favorite for me.

Tom Cavanagh is not the only new addition for Superman & Lois’ final season. The series previously cast Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Yvonne Chapman to play Lex Luthor’s ally, Amanda McCoy. Meanwhile, one of the Man of Steel’s supporting characters, Jimmy Olsen, will finally come into play and be portrayed by Douglas Smith. Even though the main Superman & Lois cast was cut down, it seems like Smallville is still filled to the brim with returning and new fan-favorite characters.

Fans will just have to tune into Superman & Lois Season 4 to see Cavanagh make his final CW DC appearance and who his character will be. It sounds like it will be his best role yet, and it’s something you won’t want to miss. Superman & Lois returns on Thursday, October 17 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW with a special two-hour premiere event.

Superman & Lois will end with Season 4 on The CW, and while I expected to see some big names like Jimmy Olsen popping up, we were hit with a big curveball when it comes to final season casting recently. In fact, network mainstay Tom Cavanagh will appear, specifically in the series finale, and that news alone has me both so intrigued and confused at the same time. Let's talk it out.

So far, we know Cavanagh will appear in an episode titled "It Went By So Fast." The actor revealed at FanExpo Philadelphia he originally wanted to direct the finale, as he's helmed past Superman & Lois episodes before, but the series already had that role all squared away. Instead, he told FAN EXPO Philadelphia that showrunner Todd Helbing offered him a role in the finale (via TV Line), and now my mind is racing about what that will mean.

Why I'm Intrigued By Tom Cavanagh Joining Superman & Lois' Finale

Bringing Tom Cavanagh into an Arrowverse series would always cause a stir, especially when this is the last show remaining from a formerly robust slate. Cavanagh's performances as Harrison Wells (in various forms) and the villain Eobard Thawne are the best things about The Flash. Given the episode title is "It Went By So Fast," should we assume he'll play the iconic villain Reverse-Flash in the finale? Is that a Flash reference in general? I have questions that need answers.

Cavanagh was also in the finale for The Flash, and that made sense. It would be awesome to see him reprise his role as Reverse-Flash for Superman & Lois, but obviously there are some confusing bits that we have to talk about if that were the case.

Why I'm Confused By Tom Cavanagh Joining Superman & Lois' Finale

In the Superman & Lois Season 2 finale, which you can revisit with a Max subscription, we learned something very important about the show's story. In the episode, it was established that the series took place on a different Earth than the rest of the Arrowverse shows, despite Clark being connected to them pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths.

This is important because if there is a Harrison Wells in the Superman & Lois world, he's likely not connected at all to the one Arrowverse fans know and love. Sure, there are ways for the Eobard Thawne of the Arrowverse to make it to this Earth's Smallville, but setting up something like that for the finale of a show that has largely ignored that part of the universe for so long feels, well, odd.

Superman & Lois has been a remarkable show thus far, so ultimately I have faith that whatever Tom Cavanagh will do in the finale will make sense. At the same time, the Star Trek fan in me can't help but think back to the Enterprise finale and how it was soiled by creatives wishing to pay homage to the totality of what they believed to be the end of the franchise. I do have some slight worry this finale could be more of a goodbye to the Arrowverse than Superman & Lois, and casting someone like Cavanagh doesn't help that fear. We'll just have to wait and see how it all goes and hope that Season 4 is as good as the other seasons.

In 2023, The Flash finished its nine-season run on The CW, and with it came the official end of the main Arrowverse continuity. Now that his time as Barry Allen is over, Grant Gustin is currently keeping busy with his dream gig on Broadway, but he did recently say he’d be game to reprise the Scarlet Speedster if DC Studios co-head James Gunn asked him to do so for the DC Universe. Tom Cavanagh, who performed opposite Gustin in The Flash, knows fans want his co-star to don the red suit again in either an upcoming DC movie or upcoming DC TV show, but he has a better idea: bring him back as Reverse-Flash!

Along with playing multiple versions of Harrison Wells, Cavanagh memorably played Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. Reverse-Flash, across the entirety of The Flash, specifically the older Eobard who disguised himself as Earth-1’s Wells. Despite the TV show ending, Cavanagh isn’t ready to hang up his yellow suit just yet, as he said the following at Toronto Comic-Con (via TomCavanaghFans) when a fan asked him if he’d want to keep playing Reverse-Flash:

That job Tom Cavanagh’s referring to is, as indicated earlier, Gustin playing Jacob Jankowski in Water for Elephants, based on the same-named 2006 novel by Sara Gruen which was previously adapted into a 2011 movie starring Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon. The Broadway production has now opened following previews that began on February 24, so we can presumably expect Gustin to be sticking around the stage for a while. Taking that into account, Cavanagh thinks James Gunn’s energy would be better spent recruiting him back for another round as Reverse-Flash on the DC Universe Chapter One slate.

To be fair, although the DC Universe is a new shared continuity, there are a few familiar faces from the DCEU who are sticking around, including John Cena’s Peacemaker, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle. So it wouldn’t be entirely weird for James Gunn to have someone from the Arrowverse reprise their role in this franchise; why not have it be Tom Cavanagh? Now granted, he almost certainly wouldn’t play the same Reverse-Flash from the Arrowverse, as that Eobard Thawne met his permanent demise in the Season 8 finale, although he was seen one last time in the series finale when Blue Cobalt plucked him, along with Zoom, Savitar and Godspeed, from different points in history and brought them to the present day.

Still, as much as I’d like to see Tom Cavanagh back as Reverse-Flash, it’s likelier that a new actor will be cast in the role for the DC Universe. Having said that, there’s still no indication of when or even if The Flash will appear in this universe. Ezra Miller did reprise Barry Allen for The Flash movie last year, but there’s been no mention of him returning to the role for the DC Universe. I imagine there will eventually come a time when this hero races across the big screen again, and when that day comes, it’d be great to see him fighting Reverse-Flash, whether it’s Tom Cavanagh’s or someone else’s.

If you’d like to revisit Cavanagh’s time as the antagonistic speedster, all nine seasons of The Flash can be streamed with a Netflix subscription. Otherwise, remember that the DC Universe will get underway later this year when Creature Commandos premieres to Max subscribers, and the Superman reboot will follow on July 11, 2025.

While Matt Letscher played the original version of Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. Reverse-Flash, Tom Cavanagh had significantly more screen time as the character on The Flash thanks to the evil speedster stealing Harrison Wells’ likeness. Despite Cavanagh’s Thawne dying in the Season 8 finale, we’ll see him one last time in The Flash series finale, titled “A New World, Part Four”… but what if it wasn’t actually the last time? Cavanagh has come up with an idea for another Flash spinoff, and it’s clear he’s poured a lot of thought into this.

Just a few weeks after The Flash brought its Reverse-Flash storyline full circle, Cavanagh’s Eobard Thawne is back in the final episode to antagonize Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen, thanks to his descendant, Eddie Thawne, who’s become Cobalt Blue and also brought back Zoom, Savitar and Godspeed to help cause trouble. Ahead of the episode airing, Tom Cavanagh chatted about his time on The Flash with TV Insider, and while recollecting about Season 1, he shared the following Reverse-Flash centric spinoff idea:

For those who need a refresher, Eobard Thawne was stranded in the year 2000 immediately after he killed Barry Allen’s mom. As such, despite despising Barry with all his heart, he knew he’d need his nemesis’ super speed to get back home, so he killed Harrison Wells, took his likeness and accelerated the development of the S.T.A.R. Labs particle accelerator, which he then used in late 2013 to give Barry his powers and create Central City’s meta-humans. Per Cavanagh, sometime during The Flash Season 5, when Sherloque Wells was Team Flash’s resident Wells, he came up with this idea of Eobard falling in love with someone as he’s plotting and scheming how to escape his contemporary prison. It’s a storyline The Flash could have never delivered since it would take too much time away from focusing on Barry, hence why it would’ve been told in a spinoff.

Interviewer Damian Holbrook commended this idea, saying he liked it even more than “something set within the World of Wells,” i.e. centered on the numerous versions of Harrison Wells Tom Cavanagh played over The Flash’s first seven seasons. That led to the actor talking about how this spinoff would provide additional real estate to explore Eobard Thawne’s dark psyche, saying:

As someone whose appreciation of Reverse-Flash increased as I watched The Flash, I would certainly be down to watch a spinoff about him, whether it utilized Cavanagh’s idea or went with a different angle. Unfortunately, taking into account The CW’s programming being radically overhauled, plus the plans in motion for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe franchise, the chances of this spinoff ever happening are almost certainly zero. That said, DC Comics should seriously consider having Cavanagh write this as a limited comic book series. It would give Arrowverse fans a little more time to spend with his version of Eobard Thawne and obviously be a lot less expensive to put together compared to a full-blown TV project.

The Flash series finale airs tonight at 8 pm ET, but not to worry, because along with there being plenty of other shows on the 2023 TV schedule worth looking into afterwards, there are many upcoming DC TV shows CinemaBlend will be covering as they progress down the creative pipeline.

The Flash is just one episode away from closing out the series, and The CW show is going all-out. It looks like Grant Gustin's Barry Allen will go head-to-head with some of his worst enemies, as Eddie Thawne's transformation into Cobalt Blue will bring some other notable characters from the past to Central City. Tom Cavanagh will return as Reverse-Flash, and I'm absolutely psyched about who else we'll see in the series finale based on the trailer.

Reverse-Flash

After Reverse-Flash was killed off in Season 8, Eobard Thawne has once again found his way back to annoy The Flash. I couldn't be happier because the Harrison Wells iteration of Thawne has always been the definitive big bad of this series for me. It's good to see Tom Cavanagh back in his yellow suit, even if it somewhat diminishes Thawne's ultimate defeat in the previous season. 

Hunter Zolomon (Zoom/Black Flash)

The Flash revealed ahead of this trailer that actor Teddy Sears would return as Hunter Zolomon, also known as the villainous speedster Zoom. The villain appears in his classic speedster suit, although his face is seemingly restored after it was disfigured when he turned into Black Flash. Is this the more classic Zoom we saw ripped from the past, or does Zolomon still have some of his memories as Black Flash? I can't wait to find out!

Savitar

Savitar was a mystery villain throughout most of Season 3 of The Flash, but turned out to be a time remnant of a Barry Allen from a potential future. It's possible that's the case in this return, though the red eyes have me thinking this could be the negative Speed Force manifesting inside the shell of the Savitar suit. This might also be the actual Savitar from Season 3, seeing as we hear the timeline is breaking down. 

Jay Garrick

Jay Garrick (John Wesley Shipp) is back on The Flash, and it looks like he's one of Barry's few returning allies in this series finale. Here's hoping that more friends will join the fray because I'm not sure Barry can take down some of his greatest foes with just the help of Team Flash as it stands. Jay will at least be able to help aid against the various villainous speedsters appearing all at once and maybe save Nora from that attack we see from Savitar. 

The Flash will come to an end on The CW on Wednesday, May 24th, at 8:00 p.m. ET. Now would be a great time to reference the 2023 TV schedule to see what other shows are on the way, seeing as viewers will have a gap in their schedule with this great series ending. 

Warning: SPOILERS for The Flash episode “A New World, Part One” are ahead!

Last week’s episode of The Flash saw Matt Letscher returning as Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. Reverse-Flash, specifically at the point in his life when he killed Barry Allen’s mother, Nora. “A New World, Part One” brought the sinister speedster’s storyline full circle to where we found him in Season 1, and with The Flash Season 8 having ended with the older Thawne’s death, one wouldn’t be faulted for thinking we were done with the character. But not so, as it’s been confirmed that Tom Cavanagh will be back as his version of Reverse-Flash before the final season is over.

The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace informed EW that Cavanagh will reprise his version of Eobard Thawne for the series finale, “A New World, Part Four,” which airs on The CW on May 24. Although Letscher portrayed Thawne in his original form, Cavanagh has appeared more often as the character with his Harrison Wells visage. Wallace had this to say (prior to the writers strike unfolding) about the actor coming back before The Flash concludes its run:

Tom Cavanagh has been around The Flash for its entirety, serving as main cast members for the first six seasons, as well as the first few episodes of Season 7 before leaving the full-time gig. Along with the disguised Eobard Thawne, he brought various versions of Harrison Wells from across the multiverse, most notably Harry Wells from Earth-2, HR Wells from Earth-19, Sherloque Wells from Earth-221 and Nash Wells from a never-identified Earth. However, regarding his version of Thawne, the villain killed Earth-1’s Harrison Wells (though he was resurrected early into Season 7) and stole his appearance so he could accelerate the creation of Central City’s particle accelerator, which in turn led to Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen become The Flash years earlier. Despite the Scarlet Speedster being his arch-nemesis, Thawne did this because of his own reduced speed and needing Barry to help him get back to his own time period.

As indicated earlier, Tom Cavanagh’s Reverse-Flash was seen perishing in The Flash Season 8 finale, as he was wiped from the timeline, seemingly for good, while he was fighting Barry Allen as the avatar for the Negative Forces. So going into The Flash’s final episode, it’s unclear if the Eobard we’ll be seeing has been resurrected, or if it’s a younger version of the character who’s been plucked from the past. It’s also worth mentioning that “A New World, Part One” featured the return of Rick Cosnett’s Eddie Thawne, Eobard’s ancestor who sacrificed himself in the Season 1 finale to erase Reverse-Flash from existence, though that proved to be temporary. Although we’ve reunited with Eddie before in flashbacks, trips to the past and other strange occurrences, this appears to be Eddie fully alive again, and it seems like he’s on the path to becoming Cobalt Blue. So it’s not unreasonable to think he’ll be involved with, if not directly responsible for Eobard’s return.

All will be revealed when The Flash’s series finale airs in a few weeks at its usual time slot, 8 pm ET. Until then, keep track of what other programming is currently available to watch with our 2023 TV schedule.

Warning! The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 8 episode “Negative, Part 1.” Read at your own risk!

The Flash is just one episode away from closing out Season 8, and I’m not sure I’ve ever been more confused by this series than I was by "Negative, Part 1." The CW drama just delivered a most baffling WTF hour of television, complete with some major implications after...whatever happened...happened. And that’s saying something for a season that unceremoniously killed off Killer Frost and used a Robbie Amell guest spot to make it happen. Fortunately, star Tom Cavanagh has some comforting words for fans who are confused as hell after the penultimate installment, which essentially amounts to "anyone who watched."

WTF Part One: Iris Died

It was known going in that “Negative, Part 1” was the first episode of a two-part Season 8 finale. I expected a cliffhanger, but nothing prepared me for the unpredictable final moments that really turned this whole season on its head(s). As Barry was about to punish the opposing Still, Strength, and Sage Force avatars with some devastating lightning at the end of the episode, a time-traveling Iris suddenly appeared in front of the killer boltage and absorbed the full imapact. Barry rushed to her side, but he was apparently too late to do anything about it. Iris was dead (again, because the Arrowverse) and it doesn't look like she's coming back. That alone was enough to draw reactions from fans:

But then things went from traumatic to inscrutable not long after her death, with a move that basically only The Flash could pull off.

WTF Part 2: Iris Ghost-Particled Into Both Thawnes

As Iris burst into green particles, not unlike the ones seen when Deon is using the Still Force. Those particles then flew into Matt Letscher’s good version of Eobard Thawne, who willingly received negative Speed Force particles earlier in the episode to help aid Barry in the fight. All good, right? Of course not. 

It didn't seem at all like ghost-particle Iris helped to soothe Letscher’s Thawne, who let out a blood-curdling scream upon absorbing it all. He then began to tear away at his face, ultimately revealing Tom Cavanagh’s Eobard Thawne underneath, like a metahuman stacking doll. I was shocked, to say the least, and I was far from the only Flash fan feeling that way:

The Flash episode's ending was especially confusing because we literally saw Deon obliterate Tom Cavanagh’s Thawne into a disgusting corpse at the top of the episode. And unless I missed something, he didn't suddenly rip his face off to unveil a wholly different character. 

Tom Cavanagh Says Don't Worry About It

I have absolutely no idea what’s going on, but thankfully, all that confusion will come out in the wash, if Tom Cavanagh is to be believed. The actor spoke to TVLine, whose own confusion sparked a question about what the hell actually happened there, and while he obviously didn't dip into super-spoilers, he did put it out there that this will all make sense eventually. In his words:

Tom Cavanagh feels confident that arguably The Flash’s wildest twist yet will all make sense when the Season 8 finale arrives. I certainly hope so, because I would hate to have to wait another season to find out whether or not Iris will remain dead, how Cavanagh’s Thawne returned (even if we knew a return was inevitable), and what any of this ever had to do with time sickness all by the end of this final hour. 

Granted, I have no idea if we’ll actually learn answers about all or any of that, since this all comes down to what Cavanagh's perspective on things that make sense is. So perhaps it's just a matter of having a little faith in the show's creative team, which hasn't always been a surefire plan in the past, but so it goes.

The Flash Season 8 finale airs on The CW on Wednesday, June 29th at 8:00 p.m. ET, with the previous seven seasons available to stream with a Netflix subscription. I’m definitely looking forward to some answers that come and whether I need to mourn Iris West-Allen’s death for real this time.

Major spoilers below for anyone who hasn't yet watched The Flash's Season 7 finale!

Season 7 of The Flash came to an end following a two-part finale, and it was full of surprises. Not only did the episode include Barry and Iris’ future kids, with the return of Jessica Parker Kennedy's Nora and the introduction of Jordan Fisher as Bart, but it also included the return of Carlos Valdes' Cisco Ramone, as well as the Flash’s long-time enemy, Eobard Thawne, with Tom Cavanagh back in Reverse-Flash mode.

After having officially exited the series in a full-time capacity, Tom Cavanagh did indeed return to The Flash for the Season 7 finale, but not just as another thorn in Barry's side. In order to get help to defeat the many Godspeeds that were terrorizing Central City, Barry teamed up with his kids, Iris (who got help from the Speed Force), John Wesley Shipp's Jay Garrick, Michelle Harrison's Speed Force Nora, and yes, Eobard Thawne himself.

Instead of trying to help defeat The Flash, Barry’s greatest enemy returned to provide assistance with Godspeed and August, and while Nora and Bart didn’t understand why their father asked for Reverse-Flash’s help rather than theirs, Barry was more than understanding. Since Thawne's ideal future is such where HE'S the one who gets to defeat Barry, it was only normal for him to help with the Godspeed sitch so that he can go back to scheming and trying to eliminate The Flash once and for all on his own terms. Plus, this way, Nora and Bart were out of harm’s immediate path.

After Tom Cavanagh’s exit, it was hard to tell exactly when he would show up in later episodes, as well(s) as whether it would be as a different Wells or as Thawne himself. It’s been implied before that Thawne could return but as someone else without Cavanagh involved, so I was pleasantly surprised to see the actor back in fine form as Thawne/Reverse Flash in the season finale. The fact that it reversed expectations was a great touch as well, not to mention it being the icing on the "returning character" cake, with all those other actors reprising their roles.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace discussed the Season 7 finale and everything that went into it. Below, Wallace addressed how long he’d been planning Thawne’s return, which Tom Cavanagh was totally in on, and why he brought the villain back during the Godspeed war.

Eobard Thawne’s return was not expected - at least outside of general theories that he could return at any given moment - and the finale only makes me wonder whether or not Reverse-Flash's role in this series could shift moving forward. Perhaps this could be the beginning of Thawne turning good? Or at least some version of that. Though it's unlikely, given his mega-villainous nature, Tom Cavanagh’s roles in this show are ever-changing, so if there's ever going to be a different version of Thawne in the future, I'd imagine that would be the ideal way to make it happen.

While Season 7 is now in the books, The Flash fans can already look forward to Season 8 arriving on The CW on Tuesday, November 16.

Even though Tom Cavanagh said his goodbyes as Harrison Wells on The CW’s The Flash earlier this year, the actor isn’t ruling out a return just yet. Cavanagh teased what could possibly be in store once the superhero series comes to an end, and it’s enough to make any fan hopeful that they will see him, or at least something close to him, on their TV screens once again.

Tom Cavanagh has played many versions of Harrison Wells over the years, but perhaps the most formidable player is Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen’s archenemy, the Reverse-Flash. Just when Barry thinks that Eobard Thawne is no longer in the game, he comes back when he least expects it. The Reverse-Flash was last seen in Season 5, when he was helping Barry and Iris’ (Candice Patton) future daughter, Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy), defeat Cicada. Though it's been some time since fans saw Reverse-Flash, Cavanagh tells TVLine a hope he has for The Flash when it comes time for the show to finish its run:

The hope of seeing the Reverse-Flash confirms what was known in the Season 6 episode, “The Exorcism of Nash Wells” last year. While Eobard Thawne was expelled from Nash Wells’ body, Barry and Cisco confirmed that the act didn’t kill Reverse-Flash. The two mentioned that his negative tachyons would be in search of another body soon, indicating that he could be back but with another face. It’s hard to picture the Reverse-Flash played by someone other than Tom Cavanagh, given how long he's played the role. But even though he didn’t mention he’d reprise his role if the Reverse-Flash were to make another appearance, his return is still possible.

Both Tom Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes, who portrays Cisco Ramone, were announced to be leaving The Flash during the current season. Cisco’s exit, which will occur in this week's episode, will have him moving to San Francisco with girlfriend Kamila. With Cavanagh and Valdes’ exits seemingly being open-ended (while also completing their stories), fans will still be able to hold on to the hope that this won’t be the last time they’re seen on screens.

With The Flash already renewed for Season 8 and showing no signs of slowing down, as of yet, it’s hard to tell if or when the Reverse-Flash will make another appearance, and if Tom Cavanagh will be returning to the iconic role. Let's hope the fan-favorite actor does make a return before the series reaches the finish line.

After seven seasons and a variety of different Wellses from multiple universes, Tom Cavanagh will be exiting The Flash. Although it’ll be hard to imagine the CW superhero series without a variation of Harrison Wells, Cavanagh has revealed why he ultimately decided to leave the series after so long.

Since his debut on the show, Tom Cavanagh has portrayed renowned scientist Harrison Wells, or a version of him at least. These iterations have included the Flash’s biggest foe Eobard Thawne, Harry Wells, Sherloque and more recently, Nash Wells, along with others. With the many different characters and only so much an actor can do, it was only just a matter of time before Cavanagh decided to call it quits. He told Entertainment Weekly what the deciding factor was and how long he’d been planning it:

Perhaps Tom Cavanagh’s most memorable The Flash character is Barry's greatest enemy, Reverse Flash. And even though Cavanagh will no longer be on the series very soon, he believes the Reverse Flash will always be out there somewhere, waiting to strike:

While it’s unknown whether fans will be able to see Tom Cavanagh’s latest Wells iteration, Timeless Wells, again, let's hope this won’t be the last time Wells is seen in Central City, whatever capacity that may be. Meanwhile, Cavanagh is set to direct the Season 1 finale of Superman & Lois later this summer. The Flash also recently set up Carlos Valdes' exit, who will also be leaving during Season 7.

New episodes of The Flash air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.

The Flash is currently going strong in its seventh season, and catching up to Arrow as the Arrow-verse's current record-holder for the longest-running series. Now, unfortunately, Flash fans are going to have to say goodbye to not one but two original series stars who won't be around beyond the current Season 7. Both Tom Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes are bowing out of The Flash. That said, it's not all bad news.

But to start with the news that likely won't be welcomed by many Flash fans, Deadline reports that Carlos Valdes (whose departure has been rumored many times over the years) is set to conclude his run as a series regular as Cisco Ramon in the Season 7 finale. As for Tom Cavanagh, the actor who has played a wide variety of characters with the same Harrison Wells face over the years of The Flash actually already ended his series regular run in the third episode of Season 7.

This cuts The Flash's remaining original cast members from six down to four, with Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Danielle Panabaker, and Jesse L. Martin still attached to the series, although Gustin is the only one whose return for Season 8 has been confirmed at the time of writing.

All of this said, fans don't need to despair that the end of Season 7 will be the last time that they'll ever see Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon, or that the third episode of Season 7 was The Flash's final goodbye to Tom Cavanagh as one of his many characters. Flash showrunner Eric Wallace (who debunked rumors of Cisco's departure after the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover in Flash Season 6) had this to say in a statement:

Not only has The Flash boss not ruled out returns for Tom Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes, but his comment that the show is "happily keeping the door open for return appearances" indicates that the Season 7 finale won't be killing off Cisco, and at least one version of Wells must be out there somewhere, unless flashbacks or visions would be necessary for a return. It's also worth noting that Cavanagh will appear as a guest star in future episodes of Season 7, so fans haven't seen the last of him regardless of what happens in Season 8.

The Flash was renewed for Season 8 back in February, so there's no question of the Scarlet Speedster's journey ending with Cisco's departure in the Season 7 finale. For now, you can find Cisco and the rest in new episodes of The Flash on The CW Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET. Finale season is coming up fast, so be sure to keep current on your favorite shows before hiatuses begin all over again.

If you're hoping to see more versions of Wells on The Flash, Tom Cavanagh has some hopeful words for you. The actor has played Harry, H.R., Sherloque, and Nash Wells, among others, during his time on The Flash. Is Cavanagh ready to take on another persona, and is that even possible?

Tom Cavanagh weighed in on the Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald podcast, saying:

If the need (and interest) is there, it will happen. At least, that is my takeaway from what Tom Cavanagh is saying about his future as a new character on The Flash. It is sweet to see Cavanagh acknowledge other people’s in-depth understanding of The Flash and its mythos. While he is humble in what he says he knows, Cavanagh has shared on-point insight into STAR Labs’ horrible security issues. As for tackling another persona, Cavanagh is no stranger to questions about there being a new Wells.

Ahead of Season 4, Tom Cavanagh hinted at exploring the possibility of more Wells, and it happened. Time will tell if Season 7 sees more Wells join the heroes on The Flash. It is probably important to remember that the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” led to some vast changes. The Mirrorverse is still a thing, for one!

The storytelling of the superhero drama is set to get changed up yet again for Season 7.Last season saw production end three episodes shy of where it initially intended to conclude due to the coronavirus pandemic. The impact of that should be felt throughout the upcoming season. Speaking of which, The Flash and some of its fellow CW series are returning to production sooner than expected.

Whatever the situation is with Wells, fans can count on the arrival of a long-awaited villain in Season 7. Godspeed is coming! Fans saw him pop up in a one-off installment, but he will be returning down the road. Will Godspeed somehow meet up with another version of Wells? If there is a need for it, Tom Cavanagh thinks there could be more.

You can watch Tom Cavanagh play the various forms of Wells by streaming the series on Netflix. The superhero show is there along with lots of new 2020 content. The Flash is currently slated to return for Season 7 after this fall’s premieres in January 2021, so stay tuned.

Over the last six seasons of The Flash, Tom Cavanagh has worn a lot of different hats. He began the series playing Harrison Wells, disguised as Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. Reverse-Flash. He then went on to play several more iterations of the original Harrison Wells, all of whom hailed from different earths. Having played so many Wellses and the villainous Thawne, Cavanagh revealed which of the many characters has been his favorite to portray on The Flash.

If three different versions of Wells wasn’t enough already, The Flash introduced the Council of Wells in Season 4, which was made up of a variety of different Wellses who occasionally offered advice to Team Flash. There was even Wells the Grey, a clear parody of Gandalf the Grey from The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Somehow, Tom Cavanagh has made them all feel distinct from each other, while maintaining the believability that they were all just different versions of the same character. Speaking with Smallville alum Michael Rosenbaum on his Inside of You podcast, The Flash actor revealed which of the characters was his favorite, and there was a very clear winner. Here’s what Cavanagh said:

Is anyone surprised that Tom Cavanagh’s favorite character to play is Reverse-Flash? I’m certainly not. The actor does some great work bringing the petty and villainous Thawne to life on the show. That said, of all of Cavanagh’s characters on the show, my personal preference is definitely Harry Wells of Earth-2. Who doesn’t love a good “anti-social, heart of gold” type of character, am I right?

Interestingly enough, Tom Cavanagh wasn’t the only actor to have played Reverse-Flash on the superhero series — Matt Letscher played Thawne in several episodes of The Flash and was also a primary villain in Season 2 of Legends of Tomorrow. However, Cavanagh has made a memorable mark as the character regardless of who else has played him.

Tom Cavanagh last played Reverse-Flash in the latter half of Season 6. Team Flash worked to exorcise Thawne from the mind of Harrison “Nash” Wells, the archaeologist version of the character who harbored the many versions of Wells following the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. Where Reverse-Flash is now or what he’s up to is anyone’s guess. Here’s hoping that Season 7 will provide some answers.

With every new season of The Flash comes a new version of Harrison Wells. The character, who was the scientist behind the particle accelerator that gifted Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) his powers in Season 1, was later revealed as the villain Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash. Since Thawne’s (temporary) defeat, however, Tom Cavanagh has played a new version of Harrison Wells every season and Season 6 is no different.

Speaking with TV Guide, The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace teased what fans should expect from this new iteration of the character in the first and second halves of Season 6. And it wouldn’t be The Flash if someone wasn’t harboring a secret, so New Wells fits right in.

Eric Wallace is being impressively vague about Season 6 Wells, but I’m still intrigued. Additionally, Wallace has dubbed the new format as “graphic novel number one” and “graphic novel number two.”

During San Diego Comic-Con, Tom Cavanagh did tease that he’ll be playing a very Indiana Jones-esque Wells, which explains the adventurous part. In The Flash’s extended trailer, he arrives on the scene by swinging in on a rope. Wells is nothing if not a bit theatrical.

Tom Cavanagh will be pulling double duty once again this season, though, since he’ll also be portraying Pariah in the Arrow-verse crossover, “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. It hasn’t been confirmed if he’ll also return as Reverse-Flash, but considering the villain’s escape in the Season 5 finale, it’s a big possibility.

In seasons past of The Flash, Tom Cavanagh has played Earth-19’s H.R. Wells, Earth-2’s grumpy Harry Wells, and Season 5’s French-accented Sherloque Wells. Season 4 even introduced the “Council of Wells,” which included a host of Wells’ from across the multiverse. No matter what transpires on the show, fans can always expect there to be a replacement every season. It's become a bit of a comedy gag at this point. However, the trick is not to get too attached because he’ll be gone by the end of the season.

Elsewhere in Season 6, Barry will be contending with his looming death, Iris (Candice Patton) will be building Central City Citizen and hiring new staff members, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) will be working hard to have a normal life sans powers, Caitlin will let Killer Frost be in the driver’s seat for a while, and Ralph will make attempts to crack the case of the missing Sue Dearbon.

With all of the buildup towards “Crisis on Infinite Earths," the character developments, and the new Harrison Wells, The Flash is shaping up for a very exciting season.

Of all the joys that come with a new season of The Flash, the revolving door of Tom Cavanagh performances is at the top of the mountain. Which means Season 5 is going to be as wild a ride as any, since we're getting a brand new version of Harrison Wells on a full-time basis. (Still hoping for a Council of Wells spinoff.) Cavanagh spoke with CinemaBlend and other press during San Diego Comic-Con, and he explained how they will be handling his Season 5 character, who goes by the name Sherloque Wells.

No mention of any deerstalker caps or tobacco pipes, but one probably wouldn't be too far off-base in deducing that viewers will get to see several nods to the homonymic detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes. Though I guess Sesame Street's Sherlock Hemlock is up for contention here, since The Flash is angling things to be more comedic. But above all, we can certainly expect for Tom Cavanagh's next to be one fueled by unbridled genius. (And one who can probably waltz in and out of S.T.A.R. Labs willy nilly, given the awful security there.)

Similarly to how Harry's genius made him -- in Tom Cavanagh's words -- "a jackass," and how O.G. Harrison Wells's brilliance offered a leg up for Eobard Thawne's evil schemes, Sherloque Wells' intelligence will put him slightly at odds with the rest of Team Flash. In the sense that while everyone might be able to believe everything he's saying about certain inarguable facts of nature, his trustworthiness will leave something to be desired. Will it be tied to some under-the-table plot that he doesn't want Barry and the others to discover? Will he also be working with suspicious characters that the protagonists would not approve of, such as the new villain Cicada? What's in the box, Sherloque? What are you hiding?!?

As always, it'll be fun to watch all the Earth-1 normies meet the new Wells and try to get to know him through whatever means necessary. (With H.R., it presumably took hazy off-screen drum circles.) With Sherloque, it sounds like they'll have to figure out how to balance his book smarts with his street smarts to keep him from getting too far ahead of the game, and one would suspect that Cisco will be the key to making it happen. Though it would be fun to see some Thawne-ian flashes in Cavanagh's eyes as he pulls a fast one on his new acquaintances. I do like a slightly villainous Tom Cavanagh when one comes around.

Even if the character's conception didn't play out exactly like this, it's a fun thought to consider showrunner Todd Helbing going, "The characters need to solve Nora's problems," followed by Tom Cavanagh dropping in from the ceiling to say, "Solve? Let's make him a detective. I'm too old for Encyclopedia Brown, and too young for Columbo, so what about Sherlock Holmes?" Also, I just want to know where we sign up to get Harrison Watson to show up as well(s).

You won't learn anything about Sherloque Wells from the first Season 5 trailer, but you should watch it anyway. And then check out what to expect from Nora West-Allen's visit, how Cecile's pregnancy powers will be addressed, and where Caitlin's Killer Frost story is heading.

The Flash is going strong after four seasons on The CW, and Barry Allen is poised to speed his way into brand new territory when he returns for Season 5 in the fall. The show has won a loyal following of fans, but that doesn't mean fans don't have the occasional bone to pick with some of the ways the show works. Specifically, some fans have taken issue with how people -- villains and allies alike -- have managed to just wander into STAR Labs when there logically should have been some tight security. Tom Cavanagh, who plays the many versions of Harrison Wells to appear so far, explained why STAR Labs has such terrible security, and it was hilarious:

According to Tom Cavanagh at San Diego Comic-Con's Flash panel, Barry and Team Flash are not to blame for the terrible security at STAR Labs despite the fact that Barry technically owns the building. The team just doesn't have the same funds at their disposal as they did back in Season 1, when Original Recipe Wells (a.k.a. Eobard Thawne in disguise) was in charge, and Gunther the security guy is the best they can afford. Apparently, you get what you pay for in Central City, and when you can't pay for the best security, you don't get a very secure superhero headquarters.

Of course, Gunther can't be blamed for those acoustics that accommodate a surprising number of dramatic reveals and exposition drops in the hallways of STAR Labs. Maybe the architect who built STAR Labs in the first place simply didn't count on the facility someday being operated by a group that keeps a lot of secrets that tend to be outed at the most inconvenient times. Hey, at least that ought to mean that the brain squad that stays behind at STAR Labs during missions should be able to hear the intruders coming from quite a distance, right? Right?

In all seriousness, Tom Cavanagh's explanation about Gunther and suggestion that a real security guard named Todd join the show indicate that the security at STAR Labs is another one of those things we really shouldn't overthink about The Flash. If the show needs a climactic showdown or two to go down in STAR Labs each season, then we can just pretend that the security at the facility is just fine and the villains all just happen to have the same knack for breaking through.

It's not like this is a problem unique to The Flash. Team Arrow over in Star City has had its various secret lairs broken into on such a regular basis that Malcolm Merlyn even made a joke about it. Even the time-traveling Waverider over on Legends of Tomorrow is no stranger to intruders. Maybe the folks of Earth-1 need to take a trip to Earth-38 to get some security pointers from the D.E.O. If we can suspend our disbelief enough to watch a show about a guy who got superpowers after being struck by lightning, we can do our best to suspend disbelief about the STAR Labs security.

Team Flash may have larger concerns than STAR Labs security when the show returns in the fall, however, due to the arrival of Nora West-Allen, the developments on the Killer Frost front, and everything the trailer (which you can watch here) promises. Tom Cavanagh teased at SDCC that we would see more Wells in Season 4 of The Flash, and now we're learning exactly how. In an effort to figure out who DeVoe is, Team Flash will bring together a "Council Of Wells" that features doppelgangers of the brilliant mind all hailing from different parts of the multiverse. Tonight's episode "When Harry Met Harry" will feature a few new variations on Wells that should be a treat for fans to see, although actor Tom Cavanagh is disappointed a few versions didn't make the cut:

The fact that The Flash writers left a character like "Wells The Gray" out of the script in favor of other characters should indicate just how amazing the ones that made the cut should be. Tom Cavanagh told Extra that the list of Wells characters was knocked down from 10 to just a few, and the final Wells versions that made the cut include a pompous German and a bad ass Australian. Cavanagh also mentioned the episode will feature a nod to "the mansion" to reference Hugh Hefner, so hopefully, we see a Wells in a red smoking jacket.

As far as whether or not any of the Wells copies that were cut from the episode will appear in future episodes, Tom Cavanagh joked that his Gandalf Wells might appear in Season 17. For now, it appears the Wells versions that made the cut are good enough for Cisco actor Carlos Valdes, who thinks fans of The Flash will really enjoy the scene where they all come together:

The Flash is all new tonight at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. The Flash is set to return to the airwaves for Season 4 next week, and we'll get to see how the characters picked up after the destructive conclusion of the Season 3 finale. The end of Season 3 saw the death of yet another version of Harrison Wells when Savitar killed H.R. of Earth-19, but Tom Cavanagh is on board to return in Season 4. So, naturally, fans have been wondering which version of Wells would appear in the new season and how the show would handle him. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg has teased some of what we can expect out of Harrison Wells in Season 4, saying this:

We've known for a bit that Season 4 would feature Harry, a.k.a. the Harrison Wells of Earth-2. According to Andrew Kreisberg in his chat with EW, the crew at The Flash felt that there was a great deal of ground still to cover with the Earth-2 version of Harrison Wells. It sounds like the show will be able to tie his development to the actions of the new big bad of the year, and we'll get to see Harry get more emotional than we've seen in the past.

Given that Harry has been the quippiest and most caustic of the Wells that have been introduced on the show, an emotional journey -- perhaps not one connected to his daughter -- could be an awful lot of fun and show off a new side of Harrison Wells. That said, Andrew Kreisberg did tease the existence of at least one other Wells in the course of Season 4. The ability of speedsters to change time and cross between worlds mean that pretty much any version of Wells can theoretically pop up, including Earth-19 H.R. or perhaps even the dearly-departed Earth-1 Wells who had been replaced by Eobard Thawne.

Personally, I'm pretty excited to see more of Harry in Season 4. While there's a certain novelty in meeting different versions of Wells in different seasons, Harry's interactions with Team Flash were always entertaining, and he served a more direct purpose on the team than H.R. the novelist ever did. That said, it should be fun if we get to see versions of Harrison Wells from Earths other than -19 and -2. Tom Cavanagh has been able to tackle every version he's been asked to play so far.

We don't have too much longer to wait until he's back in action. Season 4 of The Flash will premiere on Tuesday, October 10 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. Perhaps more than any other DC show, The Flash has thrived because of the comic--embracing multiverse, and no single character on the hit series has become more immersed in wide-reaching sci-fi concept than Harrison Wells. Tom Cavanagh's potentially infinite pool of Wells has consistently stood out as a core, fan-favorite element, and The Flash won't soon try to end that hot streak. During San Diego Comic-Con, the actor spoke to CinemaBlend and other outlets about Season 4, and he admitted that we might see yet another Harrison Wells following some quality time with Harry, saying:

So, we won't get a brand new Harrison Wells right out of the gates -- and that's great for Harry fans -- but Tom Cavanagh's answer seems to indicate that we will eventually get some new take on the beloved sometimes-scientist. Harry Wells (a.k.a Earth-2 Wells) will return to his former status as our go-to man (in the wake of HR's tragic demise at the end of Season 3), and a new Wells will eventually enter the equation once the particular narrative direction of this season has been established.

The introduction of a new Harrison Wells could easily set the tone for the entire season.. Season 1 gave us the dastardly evil Eobard Thawne-in-disguise incarnation of the character, and he arguably remains the series' best villain to this day. Season 2 saw the introduction of the far more reliable and sympathetic Harry to help fight Zoom, and his rough edges smoothed out as the season went on. Season 3 then went into the show's darkest territory yet with the entrance of Savitar, and the arrival of HR effectively kept a consistent flow of comic relief. Each Wells serves a particular purpose, so we're dying to know how the character evolves as Barry finds himself in a battle against The Thinker, this year's new big bad. One thing is certain; Cavanagh confirmed it will NOT be Mime Wells.

On a more dour note, one thing worth acknowledging is the possibility that things may not look good for Harry if another Wells is on the horizon. The character's arc has come a long way since his days as an antisocial, gun-toting jerk, and Team Flash has gotten a bit more crowded than when he first came on the scene, which usually spells disaster for someone. With Jesse Quick now working well as an Earth-1 hero, it's difficult not to wonder whether or not Harry could bite the dust at some point in Season 4 to throw Jesse off of her game. After all, if we have learned anything from HR Wells' heroic sacrifice in Season 3, it's that anything can happen to any Wells at any given time.

Did you know the most recent episode of The Flash was directed by H.R. Wells himself? Going in, actor Tom Cavanagh had directed episodes for his past TV show Ed, but apparently working The Flash is a completely different beast. Here's what Cavanagh had to say regarding his latest directorial romp for "The Once and Future Flash."

I read that entire thing imagining H.R. twirling a drumstick and chugging coffee between sentences, and I'm not mad about it. Tom Cavanagh is not exaggerating when he speaks to the limiting challenges of directing The Flash. His episode alone featured Iris coping with death, some time travel, a villain takedown, and two versions of Barry Allen on screen at once. He did a fantastic job with it, but it's certainly a lot of plot to juggle. Perhaps Cavanagh is being a bit hyperbolic to E! Online when he says the show is an 8-day shoot that requires 10, but he's not the first to talk about the breakneck speed at which these CW hero shows are made. Can you imagine if these shows were given the opportunity to film in a more relaxed and open-ended schedule?

I'm sure there would be a sacrifice in the consistency of episodes every couple of weeks, but perhaps having more time to shoot would provide a brilliant man like Tom Cavanagh the opportunity to craft a sequence that doesn't feature 15 seconds of fast-running via CGI? As Cavanagh states, the spectacle is a big part of the comic book ethos, and we're all certainly not tuning in for a 20-minute talk between Barry and Iris as she cries about her potential death -- we want action! I don't by any means hate all the CGI sequences The Flash team creates, but I wonder how my future children will perceive the moments that even I think are less than stellar. Perhaps given the extra days for filming would allow for more time for effects wizards to add a really solid polish to those digital-heavy scenes. Or perhaps directors would be allowed to conceive big scenes in a way that limits the prolonged CGI use.

After seeing Tom Cavanagh's first shot at directing The Flash, I'm ready to see him tackle some more episodes! As stressful as it seemed to be, he really reigned in all the important aspects of the show and delivered what I thought was the best episode of Season 3 to date. The next episode will have the Savitar-revealing opportunity to prove me wrong, as The Flash is all new on May 2nd at 8 p.m. on The CW. Last week's episode of The Flash was a magical one for fans of actor Tom Cavanagh (and I assume everyone on the planet can be described as such). Viewers got to witness not just one new version of Harrison Wells popping up, but several, and Team Flash ultimately chose to bring in the fantastic Earth-19 Wells to aid in their quest to keep Central City safe. This latest version of the brilliant scientist is a total goofball, and the actor shared some thoughts about what makes this new iteration different from past versions.

What a guy, right? You bring in Tom Cavanagh to play a role, and instead of just reading the lines and hitting the blocking, he delves inside the purpose of the character to carve out his key performance angle. I mean, it's possible that executive producers like Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg gave him a ton of notes on how to play this new version, and Cavanagh is just ripping the credit from them, but that would actually be something that Season 1's Harrison Wells would do, and something that Season 2's Wells would chide him for.

Indeed, everything surrounding Tom Cavanagh's Reverse-Flash from Season 1 made the season explosive, and while the more subdued version in Season 2 didn't have the same kind of twists and turns, it was still fun to watch him awkwardly socialize his way through the season. But now we have a total wild card on our hands with Earth-19's Harrison Wells. The very first thing he did upon seeing everyone in person was pretend to be an alien, and even though that was just a silly little joke, it absolutely falls in with Cavanagh's description of him being a con man. And now we get to study his actions for use in speculating his "secret" plans.

Tom Cavanagh told ComicBook.com that the character was developed to bring some more comedic power to The Flash, but in a way that wouldn't completely overshadow the high-stakes arcs where laughter would feel out of place. However, just because he's got some wit doesn't mean he's completely on the level. The actor also said this.

The Flash will soon be busy with a lot of other serious firebombs that new Wells may not want to joke about, as we'll get to see Caitlin reaching out to her mom for help with those Killer Frost tendencies. As well, Wally is starting to get antsy about trying to reclaim his Kid Flash powers from Flashpoint, so that's gonna make things difficult. Not to mention all the new metahumans and Alchemy and the upcoming arrival of Savitar and...okay, now I could use a laugh. Can we get Earth-19 Wells and Mark Hamill's Trickster in a scene together?

While not the most problem-free method of telling stories, The Flash's potentially infinite timelines and other-Earths definitely offer the kind of in-show variety that most other shows can't pull off. For instance, the always excellent Tom Cavanagh has already played three different versions of Harrison Wells on The Flash, and "The New Rogues" surprisingly gave fans a brand new version of the brilliant scientist from Earth-19, and I dare say it's the best iteration yet!

Lookit! Lookit! Harrison Wells is smiling, everyone, and it's because there's genuine mirth behind it! Caitlin makes a joke about this new Wells having a sense of humor, and it's one that everyone can laugh along with, since the versions of the character we've met so far have been an evil villain, a somewhat asocial visitor from Earth-2 and a nice man whose personality was immediately vanquished. No one would mistake Harrison or Harry for stand-up comics, but this H.R. guy, as he prefers to be called, he's got something, and it's beyond fantastic.

And you can tell right away, too, as Earth-19's H.R. starts things off (in person) by acting as if he were a deep-voiced alien. ("Greetings, Earthlings.") He compliments Harry's looks, he tries to flirt with Caitlin and he really is just already the best character The Flash has introduced yet. His goofy hipster-lite ways probably irk some viewers as much as it irked Harry, but I am all about this guy completely taking over the show in Season 3. It should be considered a crime that we got such an extremely short exchange between Tom Cavanagh and himself, since this could easily go for an entire episode.

The reason Earth-19 Harrison Wells was brought to Earth-1 is due to Harry needing to return to Earth-2 with his daughter Jesse Quick, though I hardly expect those two to stay away forever. Indeed, upon making his breach-assisted exit tonight, Harry was in the middle of issuing a warning against...something. We didn't get to find out what it was, though H.R. earned another laugh in his reaction to the unfinished advice. Hopefully it wasn't something that will eventually kill off H.R. I just got emotionally invested in this goober!

And really, that wasn't even the only new version of Harrison Wells we got to meet, as the group ran an interview session with other Earths' takes on the character earlier in the episode. H.R. easily won out, though. That mustachioed version was a total downer, and while having a French Wells around would be interesting in theory, there would probably be too many baguette jokes.

Tonight's episode of The Flash also brought back another version of a different character - more on that here - which was pretty fitting for an episode featuring the reflection-based crimes of Mirror Master. But what we really want to know now is, does this mean we'll get to see at least 18 more versions of Trickster whenever Mark Hamill makes his perma-welcomed return later this season? It does, right?

The Flash airs Tuesday nights on The CW at 8:00 p.m. ET. Hopefully with a new version of Harrison Wells to go with every new episode.

The CW's The Flash is one of the funniest and most lighthearted superhero shows on television right now. Much of this comes from its well-written scripts, but it also has quite a bit to do with the natural charm and charisma of the series' principle cast. As it turns out: they're just as funny when they mess up as they are when they get their lines right -- if not funnier. An epic gag real from The Flash's second season has finally hit the web, and it's basically just a hilarious supercut of Tom Cavanagh berating the entire cast and crew. Check it out below and prepare to laugh.

That video proves one very important thing: I want to work on the set of The Flash. In less than twelve minutes, that gag reel makes us completely understand why we call these people "Team Flash." They genuinely feel like a tight knit family of crime fighters. Everyone gets a moment to showcase exactly how charming they truly are when not in character, but it's Tom Cavanagh who definitely steals the show. Whenever someone messes up on set, Cavanagh is there to jokingly poke fun at him or her, and just generally lighten the mood. He's not afraid to let the expletives fly at any and every opportunity, either, but everyone around him seems to love it.

The absolute best Tom Cavanagh moment in this entire gag reel? Cavanagh and Carlos Valdes doing improv as Harrison Wells and Cisco in which Wells screams at Team Flash's nerdy tech genius, and calls him "dumber than a bag of hammers." It's beautiful, and it reinforces the fact that Tom Cavanagh is nothing if not a bona fide charisma factory. Then, of course, there's the return of Tom Cavanagh's catchphrase, "fuck me with a spoon twice, daily," which actually appears on the gag reel for The Flash's first season as well, and will always make me laugh. If you ever need a reminder of why The CW cast such an affable guy to play a sociopath like Eobard Thawne, look no further than this gag reel.

Making superhero movies and TV shows has to be the most enjoyable job in all of Hollywood. It just feels like every week we see a new set of outtakes showcasing how much fun these actors and filmmakers have on set. Only recently a similar gag reel from this summer's Captain America: Civil War surfaced online, and it also showed a tightly knit group of superhero actors having fun with one another whenever they messed up a take or a shot. If there's a better job than that, I haven't heard about it.

This gag reel is absolutely hilarious, but it's still no substitute for the drama of the real thing. Luckily we won't have to wait too much longer to see Team Flash go on its next big adventure. The Flash will return for its third season on Tuesday, October 4 at 8 p.m. EST. Do you guys remember when The Flash finale ended on Tuesday and Barry jumped in bed and fell asleep peacefully until morning? Oh yeah, that’s not what happened. It ended with Barry heading back in time to the night his mom died and successfully stopping Reverse-Flash from killing her, which will have presumably huge reverberations in the timeline. Not just for Barry’s loved ones, either, but for his one-time idol Harrison Wells. Those afraid that the science whiz would be absent from Season 3 can breathe easier, as actor Tom Cavanagh has been confirmed as a series regular for the next batch of episodes. But the trick now is trying to figure out just who he will actually be playing.

The Flash can almost count as a sketch series, since just about all of the main cast members have played different roles by this point. Through the first two seasons, Tom Cavanagh played three different versions of Harrison Wells. There was his extended time as the secret baddie Reverse-Flash, the very short time when he was shown as his original self before having his body taken over by Eobard Thawne, and then in Earth-2 form for Season 2. So how is this going to happen?

If we assume that Barry’s decision to reboot his life sticks for at least a short amount of time in Season 3, that would mean Barry was never half-orphaned and wouldn’t necessarily head down the same path as before, meaning he might not become The Flash, meaning Reverse-Flash would have never gone back in time to destroy him. And no Future-Thawne means O.G. Harrison Wells never would have had his body and personality usurped, so we could potentially get to see the Harrison Wells that created The Flash in the first place. That’s something we haven’t really seen yet, since Thawne impatiently set up the accelerator explosion years ahead of the original time. I’d love to spend a good afternoon with the Earth-1 brainiac without his mind and impulses taken over by next-century supervillains.

Since Cavanagh is a regular, we don’t anticipate him entering the story for only a temporary basis, so perhaps another likely scenario will turn him into yet another Harrison Wells from a different Earth that we haven’t been to yet. Or maybe Supergirl’s world. Now that Barry and Cisco can get a fix on other worlds anytime they please, there are probably tons of other Harrys that can be found elsewhere in the universe and brought to this world to….do whatever. Or maybe Earth-2 Harry forgot his contacts and he comes back with Jesse.

Tom Cavanagh is such an integral part of this superheroic ensemble that the possibility of him stepping away for a season would probably be enough to get a number of viewers to stop tuning in. (Possibly just the actor’s family and friends, but still.) It’s good that the creative minds behind The Flash know and understand talent when they see it and when it steps out of its wheelchair and sticks a vibrating hand into their temporarily still-beating hearts.

News about Cavanagh’s definitely inclusion in Season 3 came from EWEW, where it’s pointed out just how secretive The CW is currently being about next season’s details. (Considering how many twists there were in Season 2, that’s totally understandable.) The finale paid off on mysteries we’d wondered about for months, as well as other twists that could pay off later on, and on other series, too. Here’s hoping the first steps into the next chapter are smooth and not as heartbreaking as those that ended Season 2.

DC’s planned, feature-length The Flash movie is standing at a strange crossroads. The film has a star (in Ezra Miller), and a release date of March 16, 2018. But the film recently lost its director when Seth Grahame-Smith walked away over creative differences. And people on the outside still can reconcile the fact that Grant Gustin, who’s crushing it as Barry Allen on The CW on a weekly basis, wasn’t considered for the big-screen role.

One such vocal defender of Grant Gustin’s talents is The Flash co-star Tom Cavanagh, who appeared on the Nerdist podcast Puck Soup and criticized Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder for his excuses as to why Gustin wasn’t considered for the Flash movie. Cavanagh defended his young co-star’s talents as an actor, and took a few delicious swipes at Snyder in the process:

"Worth you oats!" Let’s all make a concerted effort to use that spectacular dig in conversation at some point this weekend. But it’s impossible not to understand exactly what Tom Cavanagh is saying about Grant Gustin. Yes, his version of Barry Allen on The CW’s The Flash is a clean-cut do-gooder. But it’s because he’s being asked to play it that way for the benefit of the show, and because he’s a talented performer, he pulls it off. Could Gustin switch gears and play a slacker millennial Barry Allen, which is what we are hearing might be the focus of The Flash’s 2018 movie? Of course, and it does suck that he wasn’t really even given the chance to audition for a role that, in some way, he’s already playing.

At the same time, it’s true that Zack Snyder shouldn’t be obligated to use Gustin just because there is a successful take on The Flash happening on TV at the moment. It’s a complicated dichotomy that DC has to work out as they attempt to explore characters like Barry Allen or, eventually, Green Arrow. How do you do them differently, so that fans of the TV shows avoid comparisons that may end up damaging one project, or the other.

Tom Cavanagh goes on to say that, in the moment, he told Grant Gustin that the actor shouldn’t pigeonhole himself into playing The Flash. He says that he has the chops to appear in a Spielberg war movie, or any type of drama he so chooses. Why would he want to still be playing Barry Allen a few years? The debate rages on. When it comes to mysteries and secrets on TV shows, writers and producers often keep all the hush-hush info to themselves, only sharing it with people who are directly involved with the eventual reveal. Over on The Flash, arguably the biggest mystery behind Season 2 is the identity of big baddie Zoom, and it looks like actor Tom Cavanagh has already been entrusted with the secret, which he is perfectly happy to gloat about.

The most recent installment of the behind-the-scenes feature DC All Access dove into The Flash Season 2 to see what its stars had to offer by way of information, and after he goaded everyone else for not knowing, Cavanagh revealed the identity behind the show’s central antagonist is in his brain.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Of course he said it’s awesome, and of course he said it’s one of the best things the show has done.” And that’s basically how it goes when the stars of superhero shows are asked about upcoming events. But I happen to trust Tom Cavanagh more than the average actor – and it’s probably not just because he’s the opposite of both douchey versions of Harrison Wells – and if he says Zoom’s identity is a hallmark for the series so far, then I believe him.

After all, Cavanagh has been the guy with all the info for quite a while now. Having served as the face and body of Season 1 villain Reverse-Flash/Eobard Thawne, the actor is seemingly always in the know when it comes to the threats lurking around Central City (of either Earth). You’d think somebody would let Jesse L. Martin know, since he’s playing the cop whose job it is to know these things. Well, I guess it’s no one’s “job” to know the identity of the supervillain that can jump around from one parallel universe to the next, since that doesn’t come up much for today’s cops, but still.

During last week’s episode, fans got their first look at Earth 1’s version of Jay Garrick, who just so happens to have the name Hunter Zolomon, one of the characters who took up the Zoom mantle in the comics. But that was a little obvious and was probably just a diversion. Zoom could be anyone from Earth 2 Barry Allen to Jay Garrick himself to someone we haven’t seen before. But if the latter is the case, we need to meet the character soon to ensure that things are as awesome as Tom Cavanagh says they are.

Though it will presumably be several more weeks or months until audiences finally see who or what is under Zoom’s mask, there is still fun to be had tuning into The Flash every Tuesday night on on The CW.

So far actor Tom Cavanagh has died twice on The Flash. The first time was in the episode “Tricksters” when we saw the flashbacks of Eobard Thawne killed the original Harrison Wells and stole his identity. The second time was in the Season 1 finale when Eddie Thawne shot himself, thus erasing Eobard Thawne from existence. Despite these two events, Cavanagh will remain in the main cast for Season 2, leading fans to wonder how exactly he’ll be involved. Now we have an idea of what’s in store for Cavanagh next season, and it will involve the multiverse.

At San Diego Comic-Con, series star Grant Gustin mentioned that Wells and Barry won’t be interacting at all when the show kicks off, and his next statement hints that it’s because they may not even know each other. According to Gustin:

Time travel is a complicated concept both on The Flash and any piece of fiction, but presumably when Eobard Thawne was wiped away, this meant that he never killed the original Harrison Wells, a.k.a the guy who was putting together S.T.A.R. Labs in 2000 with his fiancé Tess Morgan. Thus, some speculated that Cavanagh would be playing a still-alive Wells in the present day. However, according to Gustin, we’re not getting a Wells from The Flash’s main world, which we’ll call Earth 1. Instead, next season’s Wells will be from an alternate universe; one where he was never killed and most likely hasn’t led as chaotic of a life. That would explain why he and Barry won’t have the same relationship: they haven’t even met each other! Take a look at Mirror Universe episodes of the various Star Trek shows if you want to get a better grasp on alternate universes.

It was teased shortly before the season finale that The Flash Season 2 would be exploring alternate timelines and parallel universes. This was verified when Masters of Sex’s Teddy Sears was cast as Jay Garrick. In the comics, Garrick debuted as the Flash 16 years before Barry Allen was created, and within DC continuity is the Flash on Earth 2. Fans saw his trademark winged helmet in the season finale, but so far little is known Garrick other viewers will see “his origin unfold” as a speedster from Earth 2. While the DC multiverse contains countless Earths, it’s possible that to keep things simple for the audience, the new Wells will also hail from Earth 2.

The Flash Season 2 will debut on Tuesday, October 6 in its normal timeslot on The CW.

Warning: spoilers for The Flash Season 1 finale are ahead!

After months of manipulating Barry Allen and causing terror as the Reverse-Flash (not to mention everything he did before he arrived in the present), Eobard Thawne, a.k.a. faux Harrison Wells, finally got what was coming to him on The Flash Season 1 finale. After his attempt to return his home time period was thwarted, Eobard nearly killed Barry Allen until Eddie Thawne killed himself, resulting in Eobard being wiped from existence. However, things are rarely as they seem to be on The Flash, and though Eobard might be gone forever (emphasis on the word ‘might’), this isn’t the last we’ve seen of actor Tom Cavanagh, as executive producer Andrew Kreisberg has revealed that Cavanagh will be returning for Season 2.

Unfortunately, Kreisberg didn’t elaborate to THR on what Cavanagh’s role on the series will be, which isn’t a clear-cut answer given what went down in the finale. Before we start speculating, let’s look back at what happened in “Fast Enough.” After Barry decided not to save his mother in the past, he returned the present and destroyed Eobard’s time machine so he couldn’t return to the future. Furious, Thawne nearly killed Barry until Eddie shot himself. With Eddie dead, the Thawne lineage doesn’t continue, meaning that Eobard is never born and thus can’t exist. This also resulted in Thawne reverting to his original appearance, as played by Matt Letscher (as seen below), before disappearing.

So where does that leave us on who Cavanagh is playing? Well, it could be that Eobard wasn’t truly wiped from existence, and will somehow return in Season 2 to antagonize Barry and the other members of Team Flash. On the other hand, perhaps the actor will be playing the real Harrison Wells. Eobard murdered the actual Wells in 2000 to take his identity and speed up the construction of the particle accelerator. If Eobard was never born, that means that Wells was never killed, and he could be living a normal life in the present.

Then of course, there’s all those alternate timelines and universes out there where another version of Reverse-Flash is running around, so during the show’s exploration of those other realities, this other yellow-garbed speedster may meet the main timeline’s Flash and begin feuding with him. There are so many options, and all of them involve complicated sci-fi tropes!

We’ll find out who Cavanagh will be playing when The Flash returns for Season 2 in the fall.

Tom Cavanagh has found a niche for himself in Hollywood over the last few years, regularly starring in multi-episode arcs of various TV shows, but with his addition to the cast of Flash he's hoping to once again achieve the status of "series regular." The Wrap reports that the Ed star has become the latest actor to sign on for the Arrow spin-off pilot, set to play a very important figure in the title character's life.

Arrow and DC Comics fans will remember that the Scarlet Speedster was created due to an accidental explosion at Central City’s S.T.A.R. Labs Particle Accelerator. Well, Cavanagh will be playing Harrison Wells, the "man and money" behind the decimated facility. The Wrap says that the character becomes an outcast following the devastating explosion of his business, but "redeems himself when he discovers that his failed experiment accidentally created the world’s fastest man."

Grant Gustin, who first played Flash's alter-ego Barry Allen on two episodes of Arrow, will be the pilot's star, while the supporting cast includes Jesse L. Martin, Rick Cosnett, Danielle Panabaker, Iris West and and Carlos Valdes. Production is scheduled to start up soon and if everything goes according to plan we will hopefully start seeing the Flash show air on the CW next fall. Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and David Nutter are all working as executive producing and with Berlanti and Kreisberg are writing the script with DC Comics' Geoff Johns.

While Cavanagh started acting all the way back in 1991, he didn't get his big break until 2000 when he landed the title role on the series Ed. The show, which had the actor starring as a big city lawyer who returns to his Midwest hometown to woo his high school sweetheart and buy a bowling alley, was cancelled after four seasons due to low ratings. His next big TV gig was starring on the eight-episode-long show Love Monkey, which he followed by the almost-as-short Trust Me. He also had recurring roles on Scrubs, Eli Stone, and Royal Pains. He most recently appeared in an episode of the series Blue Bloods. Those of you unfamiliar with Cavanagh can watch a sampling of his work below:

At this stage in the game we're not exactly sure what ground is going to be covered in the Flash pilot, but I'm willing to bet that it begins in a hospital bed. After all, it's going to take the eponymous hero a little while to recover from this:

Where it goes from there I don't know, but I'm excited.

A few weeks ago when it was announced here that Anna Faris had been cast as the non-animated lead in the new live-actionish movie version of Yogi Bear, I wondered what the hell happened to Ranger Smith. Well here he is! He’s being played by Tom Cavanagh, a guy who’s never been in anything that wasn’t utterly forgettable. If you know him at all, maybe it’s as the lead in the wholly awful Heather Graham movie Gray Matters in which she victimizes her brother by lezzing out with his wife behind his back.

Some Tom Cavanagh’s playing Ranger Smith and he has no particular qualifications other than that he does, rather strangely, actually sort of look like him (I think it’s the ears). Well this is the Yogi Bear movie, what the hell did you expect? Robert De Niro already did Rocky & Bullwinkle, he’s filled his cartoon movie quota.

In the film, Smith will be the romantic interest of Anna Faris’s documentary filmmaker. In the cartoons, he had no discernable libido and existed mainly to serve as a foil for Yogi’s picnic basket stealing antics (though sometimes he seemed to warm up to Yogi and become more of a willing cohor). At his most nefarious though, Smith is sort of like a kinder, gentler version of Jackie Gleason in Smokey and the Bandit, only without the car. Make that Smokey and the Bandit II.
