Fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order are currently gearing up for the release of the upcoming Marvel movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That blockbuster will star both Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal, but the two actors have shared a bond for years before their MCU project. And the Uncharted star recently shared a funny story about how a piece of lemon stopped Bernthal from a vow of silence he'd taken while filming another project.

It's a big summer for the two A-list actors, who are starring in both Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which is in theaters now. But they actually met while filming 2017's Pilgrimage, during which Bernthal went method and decided not to speak while playing a mute. During a recent appearance on Hot Ones, Holland shared a story about his co-star, offering:

Despite the age gap between the two stars, it's clear that they hit it off immediately. In addition to helping each other audition for their Marvel roles, it sounds like Tom Holland was all too happy to be Jon Bernthal's voice in the midst of shooting Pilgrimage. And as the 30-year-old actor recalled, his buddy Jon started off pretty well with his vow of silence. As he put it:

So what went wrong? After all, plenty of actors use method acting to help stay in character. It turns out that things went awry when Holland and Bernthal went out to get a meal together. The Spider-Man actor shared how the two went to a restaurant together, where he was the only one who could speak with the wait staff. He went on:

This went on for some time, but one particular interaction between Tom Holland and a server ended up being the final straw in Jon Bernthal's vow of silence for Pilgrimage. It all came down to the request for lemon, which ended the method acting in one fell swoop. The story concludes with:

And just like that, the Punisher actor returned to the land of speaking. It's unclear how far into shooting Jon Bernthal's lemon-based revelation happened, but regardless, he still offered a great performance in the 2017 movie. And his friendship with Tom Holland is one that's still going strong to this day.

Bernthal and Holland can both be seen in The Odyssey, in theaters now. And they'll have yet another title together when Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31st as part of the 2026 movie release list. Hopefully we get to see these two buddies on screen more in upcoming Marvel movies.

It’s uncomfortable saying anything negative about The Odyssey right now. In an age of mediocre sequels and uninspired live action adaptations, it feels necessary to exclusively put good vibes into the universe about a big budget event film with high art aspirations that’s doing its own thing. Most of us want more movies like it, and because of that desire, it’s more comfortable to just tell people, “The Odyssey is great! Go see it.”

The truth, however, is that The Odyssey is not great. It’s merely good, and the reason why it’s a step below great is because it has a major side character problem. More specifically, it’s filled with dozens of disposable side characters with one-note personalities who are merely there to advance the plot.

It’s Mostly A Problem Of Structure

I know The Odyssey is a long movie, but even for a long movie, a lot of stuff happens. We get the Trojan Horse and the destruction that comes afterwards. We get the bit with the cyclops, the bit with the sirens and the bit with Scylla and Charybids. There’s an extended sequence with Calypso and the Lotus Flowers. There’s the cattle of Helios and the entire fallout from that. There’s the stuff with Circe and Odysseus’ men and then the stuff with Circe and Odysseus himself. There’s the scene where he meets with the soldiers who have died, and the scene where they have to escape the man-eating giants.

And that’s just the stuff involving Odysseus while he’s on his extended adventure. We also get a parallel plot that runs throughout the movie that involves his wife Penelope and his son Telemachus. She has to fend off the suitors who want to marry her and take her place, and Telemachus goes on his own side quest to Sparta to meet with Menelaus and try to figure out if his father is really dead.

Altogether, it’s too much plot for a single movie. It would have been an impossible task to get through all of this in three hours without abridging and trying to move through everything with a brisk momentum.

But That Doesn’t Change The Fact That These Side Characters Are Not Good

Most of The Odyssey’s runtime follows Odysseus’ quest to get home alongside his men. Unfortunately, we spend almost no time with those actual men at all. There are a few scenes of plot-driven banter and minor character development between Matt Damon’s Odysseus and Himesh Patel’s Eurylochus, but there’s nothing particularly memorable or noteworthy about their relationship.

They don’t have a fun rapport or any distinct conversations. And we get almost nothing from anyone else, apart from occasional reaction shots and maybe the odd bit of dialogue here or there. They have no quirks, eccentricities or memorable facets to their personalities. They’re just around to move the plot along.

Unfortunately, that’s a recurring theme with most of the characters in the movie, even the ones that should stand out. Take Charlize Theron’s Calypso. Odysseus spends years eating the Lotus Flowers and living with her on the island, but for the sake of runtime, we’re really just told about it. We don’t see them spending any real time together, and she’s not even given a fully developed personality. Theron has been nominated for three Oscars and has a long track record of doing really weird and memorable things with many of her characters, and yet, she feels so subdued here.

You could go down the list and say the same thing for side character after side character. Zendaya's Athena, Jon Bernthal’s Menelaus, Lupita Nyong’o’s Helen Of Troy and Mia Goth’s maid servant, are all, in theory, key characters played by acclaimed actors who should have a memorable impact on the movie, and instead, they’re just kind of there. Sometimes they deliver really emotional and weighty dialogue, but since we’re not given time to get to know their characters, they just feel like words moving along the plot.

I can’t imagine anyone leaving The Odyssey and saying, ‘you know what side character I really loved?’ Even the ones who are in the movie for a substantial amount of time feel so shallow and without. Robert Pattinson is, I guess, trying to be a little quirky with his portrayal of Antinous, who is the stand-in for the suitors that we see the most, but he’s still ultimately a stock villain from the sleazy handbook.

Samantha Morton’s Circe and John Leguizamo’s Eumaeus are getting a bit of positive buzz, but in my opinion, they still feel semi-neutered or at least like unrealized potential. Morton is in the movie for like fifteen minutes, maybe, and chooses to go a bit more understated than the set buzz had me believe, and almost all of Leguizamo’s scenes are just an old man getting picked on and looking downtrodden (apart from that wild puppy scene).

It’s A Missed Opportunity

Once again, none of this is to say The Odyssey is a bad movie or not worth your time. It’s a good movie that is worth your time. You should go see it because it’s (for the most part) an achievement in what’s possible and has a ton of scenes that work really well. There’s so much about the film that’s worth praising, but none of it has to do with character development, which is mediocre at best for Damon's Odysseus, as well as the other two leads Anne Hathaway (who makes the most of her one-note widow) and Tom Holland (who is decent as the one-note meek son).

I don’t know how Nolan could have possibly developed all these characters in three hours, but ultimately, he picked this story and this format. Maybe it should have been two movies. Maybe it should have been a miniseries. I don’t know what the answer was, but I think we should be honest that the path he picked has obvious limitations.

It sucks that the sirens were a three minute afterthought because there wasn’t time to develop their characters. It sucks that we didn’t get more from Theron or Bernthal or Nyong’o. It sucks that Morton’s Circe was only around for like ninety seconds before she showed her true intentions. All of these characters could have been the centerpiece of entire movies or episodes or at least hour long chunks. Instead, they’re underdeveloped. Instead, they’re part of a side character problem that can’t be overlooked.

One of the biggest questions related to any upcoming Marvel movies revolves around Sadie Sink’s mysteriously unspecified new role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which the stars have been keen to troll fans over. The two biggest theories have her playing either Spidey’s comic love interest Gwen Stacey, which seems fitting, or the all-powerful Jean Grey. (With a third avenue being that she’s actually one of the film’s many villains.)

Now, it appears we can remove the mutant telepath from the rumor mill, as Spidey portrayer Tom Holland himself has shut down the notion that Jean Grey will be in Brand New Day at all. In an interview with Natalia Kreuser (via Instagram), the actor was asked point-blank about the X-Men heroine, and he didn’t even craftily attempt to beat around the bush with his answer. As he put it:

There you have it, sports fans. Tom Holland, one of the crown kings of MCU spoilers, has seemingly confirmed that Jean Grey will NOT show up during the runtime of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

I Hope Tom Holland Is Telling The Truth Here

As awesome as it would genuinely be for the MCU's revamped Jean Grey to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it seemingly doesn't make that much sense for these characters' timelines, given the all-around lack of confirmed mutants on this Earth. That will all change with Avengers: Doomsday, which Kevin Feige pretty much explained will wipe out the timeline for Fox's X-Men characters, and then a new lineup of character will rise up to take their places for Secret Wars and beyond.

As such, it would be bizarre for the first new mutant to show up in this movie, five months before Doomsday hits. theaters, right? I think so, unless her arrival plays directly into how the storyline flips things around to set-up Spidey's eventual return in an Avengers sequel. But that just seems too messy for a movie that already has a dozen supporting characters. (O.G. Jean Grey Famke Janssen reportedly isn't in Doomsday, but I'm not sure that necessarily means anything about

Another reason I think we can hopefully trust Tom Holland here is because he's become so known for blabbing about details that others may have kept closer to the vest. And him shutting down rumors about a character's appearance is a more forgivable spoiler than if he'd come out and said exactly who Sink is playing. It's like Marvel producers gave him an olive branch by allowing him to say this one thing.

But maybe he IS lying, or is being controlled by the real Jean Grey to tell fans what she wants us to hear. Check out the interview clip below and see whether or not you think Tom Holland could be fibbing it up for the sake of the mystery.

As we barrel towards the release of Avengers: Doomsday on the 2026 movie schedule, everyone was a little surprised when Doomsday's first trailer dropped just days before San Diego Comic Con kicks off. I think most fans thought it was more likely to drop there during the Marvel panel on Saturday. The great news for those of us not attending SDCC, we all got to see it Monday for the first time. We got a good look at many of the characters that we’ve long known are in the upcoming MCU movie, but I was really surprised that we didn’t get surprised by at least one of two characters who are heavily rumored to be in the movie, Spider-Man and Wolverine.

I Expected One Surprise From The Trailer

In the trailer, we saw a ton of characters, so it’s hardly shocking that there were some who we know are going to be in the movie, like Beast (Kelsey Grammer) and Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming), who didn’t make it into the short trailer. There are also a handful of major MCU actors who weren’t part of the big director’s chair reveal last year when the movie was officially announced, nor have they been announced since. I’m talking about actors like Elizabeth Olsen (The Scarlet Witch), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Strange), Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), Tom Holland (Spidey), and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine).

I really kind of expected at least one of those, most likely Wolverine, based on Jackman’s recent social media posts, or Spider-Man (since Brand New Day is hitting theaters at the end of the month) to be in Doomsday. We saw neither. I get the Russos and the powers that be want to save some surprises for the theaters, or even for future trailers, keeping the hype train going. They may also be holding some back for SDCC later this week, but I really did think we’d see either Spider-Man or Wolverine in the first trailer. Yes, I fully believe that both characters will appear in the movie (along with Dr, Strange and Deadpool).

There Is A Web Of Rumors Surrounding Spider-Man

Maybe it’s less surprising that Spidey wasn’t included, because there are a lot of theories out there that it might not be Tom Holland’s version of the webslinger, but Tobey Maguire’s, who could be in Doomsday. That is definitely a reveal that you’d want to keep for the movie, so if that rumor does end up being correct, I get it. Wolverine, on the other hand, would be the perfect character to surprise fans with in the first trailer.

Doomsday is going to mark the real introduction of the full complement of X-Men into the MCU films, after some flirting with the characters in WandaVision and, of course, Deadpool and Wolverine. Putting the most famous big-screen X-Man, Wolverine, in the trailer would have given us all a “whoa!” moment. It would save the potential reveal of Spider-Man for the movie, but still get people talking about the future of the MCU beyond Doomsday.

Then again, maybe all this is just wild speculation about all these unannounced characters and none of them will be in Doomsday. All I know is that I’ll be keeping a close lookout for any more clues and crumbs that get dropped over the next few days, weeks, and months.

After much uncertainty (and plenty of A.I-generated wedding photos), it’s finally been confirmed that Tom Holland and Zendaya are indeed man and wife. Holland confirmed that earlier this summer when he admitted that even his grandmother was confused by the A.I. pics. Even more recently, the leading man even joked about his marriage while promoting The Odyssey. While doing press for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Zendaya also had a cheeky comment on the union herself after receiving an impromptu proposal from a fan.

Zendaya recently appeared at a Brand New Day event in Mexico ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 movie schedule entry’s release. It was there that the A-lister walked the red carpet, where she was greeted by a host of photographers as well as admirers. When it came to the latter group of attendees, one person yelled “Will you marry me, please?” The situation was captured in a video shared to Instagram and, as seen in the clip, the MJ actress simply had a funny, three-word response:

I can see the Challengers star still hasn’t lost her impeccable comedic timing! On top of that, she’s also not wrong, given she’s definitely taken at this point. What I wonder, though, is whether or not that fan was aware that Zendaya and Holland had tied the knot or just went ahead and shot his shot anyways. I hope the guy didn’t take the star’s cheeky response too hard but, then again, he did perfectly set himself up for it.

As far as the marriage goes, it’s unclear as to exactly when Zendaya and Tom Holland actually tied the knot. Earlier this year, the actress’ stylist, Law Roach, let slip that the two had married in secret and, from that point on, rumors swirled around whether they actually jumped the broom. Of course, the Spider-Man stars themselves played coy for a while until Holland finally spilled the beans. (And the fact that he would reveal it tracks, given how often he drops Marvel spoilers).

That marriage proposal aside, the former Disney Channel star and her hubby have been busy as of late given their packed work schedules. Both have been jumping between Odyssey and Spider-Man press obligations, and I’m impressed with how they’ve handled it all. In the midst of all that, “Z” has also been sporting some sweet fits and further proving why she’s one of the fashion queens of Hollywood. And, by the looks of it, her hubby is enamored – not just by her threads but by her grace and charm as well.

I think that response to the marriage proposal also perfectly highlights Zendaya’s sense of humor, which manifests itself in a variety of ways. That even comes through when she frequently quotes a certain Spider-Man line to Holland when she sees fit. In short, this is a fun couple, and whenever that joy or humor spills into their public appearances, it’s a real treat.

Tom Holland’s Peter Parker had quite the adventure during the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Not only did he manage to undo multiverse-based damage, but he also teamed up with returning Spider-Men, played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Holland’s variant (or Peter 1) learned a lot from his web-slinging counterparts during their time together. However, it seems that by the time we get to Brand New Day, Parker will be “actively ignoring” some sage wisdom shared by Garfield’s Peter.

Even now, it’s hard to forget the sight of the three Peters swinging into action together, but it’s the more intimate moments between them that are truly memorable. There’s a lot of humor that comes as a result of the three Spideys chopping it up, and the older Peters also relate their own experiences to Holland’s Parker. Ahead of Brand New Day, Holland spoke at the film’s press conference – which CinemaBlend attended – and explained that his character’s dour circumstances cause him to neglect a key principle:

Garfield’s “amazing” Spider-Man (or Peter 3) did indeed tell Holland’s Parker not to be afraid to ask for help when needed. Well, based on the trailers for Brand New Day, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s wall-crawler has pretty much put the weight of the world on his own shoulders. For years, mental health has long been synonymous with Spidey, and that seems to be in full swing – no pun intended – in Destin Daniel Cretton’s new film. Holland also explained the difference between Peter’s situation and his alter ego’s:

Such a situation parallels “what young people are going through on a daily basis.” Those youngsters may not have spider-based powers and have other costumed vigilantes as mentors, but the sentiment still rings true. As for Brand New Day, Peter may not be heeding advice from his counterparts, but Holland certainly hasn’t forgotten them. The actor wanted Parker’s new costume to pay homage to Garfield and Maguire’s Spider-Men by taking elements of both of their suits.

Peter’s fresh duds won’t exactly hide his depression, of course, and it seems he’s going to have some internal struggles in his latest film. I’m curious to see how he wrestles with those inner demons while dealing with New York’s nastiest criminals. Let’s hope he does manage to eventually heed the advice from Andrew Garfield’s version of the friendly neighborhood hero.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31 amid the 2026 movie schedule. Prepare for the film by streaming the previous three films, including No Way Home, using a Disney+ subscription.

Tom Holland is a pro when it comes to stunt sequences. He’s been doing stunt choreography and fight scenes for a decade now, and I can’t think of anyone who has done more cinematic backflips in their movie career. However, apparently The Odyssey came with new challenges that the actor had never experienced before, and he recently explained what these sword fight sequences made things feel so much more dangerous.

In a recent interview with the cast of The Odyssey for Entertainment Weekly, the all-star group of actors talked about what made shooting this film so much more intense than their experiences in the past. All of the actors had experience with action sequences before, like the memorable fight sequences from the Jason Bourne movies with Matt Damon, or the stunt scenes with Anne Hathaway in the Dark Knight Rises.

However with three Spider-Man movies and three Avengers movies under his belt, Holland might take the cake as the most experienced. He joked that his Spidy-skills wouldn't have worked for this film though, saying:

The armor in The Odyssey scenes wasn’t the only thing that set the fight sequences in the film apart from Spider-Man, though. Holland explained that the sword battles in the buzzy 2026 movie release felt incredibly different than anything he’d experienced before, and a lot of this had to do with the way that director Christopher Nolan directs scenes like this, where he runs through it completely without cutting. Holland explained:

I can imagine how this could be incredibly daunting. When swords are being moved around everywhere in a stunt sequence without any cutting, it must feel very scary. Even though this is all movie magic, with intricate stunt choreography and safety precautions all being taken, it doesn’t take away from the fact that heavy, pointy movie props are moving around everywhere. The lack of cutting makes everything feel way more real and less clean than a Marvel movie. Nolan also admitted that the weapons used in a film like this makes things more dangerous, saying:

The danger behind the whole thing translates so well on screen, so the shooting style was definitely the right move for scenes like this. It brings a sense of grandiosity as well as danger, and Nolan’s insistence on actually using hordes of extras for his battles instead of CGI grounds the film even more. Comparing Marvel sequences with The Odyssey feels a bit unfair, but with a shared cast, it’s hard not to. There is something so gritty about these sequences that work so perfectly for The Odyssey, and allows the characters, like Holland's, to actually feel the stakes of the film.

SPOILERS ahead for The Odyssey. Go see it before reading ahead!

Zendaya continues her reign over the 2026 movie schedule with the release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. While the actress sadly has a small role in a film that’s nearly three hours long, I think she actually makes the biggest impact. I didn’t necessarily have set expectations for her role as the goddess Athena, but wow, did she steal one scene. That being said, there’s something about her character I’m not solid on.

I Think There’s Two Ways To Interpret Athena In The Odyssey

In Greek mythology, Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus sees Athena as a vision as she acts as a confidant and mentor to him. But there’s something interesting the Chris Nolan movie does with her character that really makes her presence in the rest of the movie matter more.

Close to the end of The Odyssey, Odysseus recalls his experience at Troy to his wife in more detail. He says he watched “rage” run rampant that night in a way that betrayed his own morals. As he tries to go home after the war, he finds himself emotionally fighting himself over something. Odysseus details how the use of the Trojan horse was a deceitful way to fight an opponent. And, when his soldiers invaded Troy, he’s disgusted by the way the entire city was slaughtered with little mercy, even for the likes of innocent civilians. That’s when we see the face of Zendaya as a woman Odysseus witnesses getting beheaded by his men. At the same time, a statue of Athena earns the same fate.

Since seeing The Odyssey, the sequence has had me thinking about what the moment means. Was Zendaya’s Athena showing herself to Odysseus as the woman he watched be slaughtered through Odysseus’s visions? Or was Athena disguised as a human who sent herself there in that moment to haunt him for his betrayal of the rules of war? It’s definitely a reveal I wasn’t expecting from the movie, and it's really the scene that sticks the most with me.

But, I Think It’s Left Open-Ended For A Reason?

As a longtime viewer of Christopher Nolan movies, I know that the filmmaker likes an ambiguous ending that can lead to multiple interpretations from viewers. I definitely think the whole thing with Athena falls into that camp. Is it Athena the entire movie, or does the goddess come to Odysseus as a symbol of the humanity he gave up during the Trojan War? Either way, the meaning did its job of being powerful and gut-punching. It’s also something that I want to ask more people about now after they watch it. Honestly, I’m not sure there’s one answer to the question. Maybe the fact that it feels enigmatic plays into this quote from earlier in the film:

• Odysseus: "Why can’t gods speak in ways we understand?"
• Athena: "Who doesn’t understand thunder? Or fire? A child’s smile? A good harvest?"

Early in the film, Odysseus is frustrated by the way the gods communicate. And the scene where Athena is beheaded kind of underlines both their points at the same time. While it’s not going to be talked about nearly as much as the spinning top at the end of Inception, I think it has a similar effect. I think the point is to get viewers talking about the scene because it’s kind of the big thesis moment of Nolan’s The Odyssey.

I felt that Odysseus’s epiphany about the ways in which he deviated from his own moral code was thrilling to watch in theaters. Zendaya’s Athena being part of the scene was very effective… even if I’m not totally sure if I can quite explain Athena's arc in the story completely.

Let’s get this out of the way: I loved The Odyssey. The new Christopher Nolan film, which finally hits the 2026 movie schedule this weekend, isn't perfect, but I thoroughly enjoyed the full three-hour runtime of the epic. I applaud the technical achievements made by Nolan and the crew. However, there was one thing that completely pulled me out of the movie, and that was the Automatic Dialogue Replacement (ADR) in some scenes. I noticed it multiple times in the movie, and I know why it was necessary, but I need to make note of it.

Penelope And Telemachus On The Balcony

I first noticed it early in the movie in a scene between Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and Telemachus (Tom Holland). They are standing on the balcony of their castle, overlooking Ithaca, and Hathaway’s dialogue is clearly overdubbed. It completely distracted me for the whole scene. If you’re not familiar with the term, ADR is when actors overdub their lines in post-production because the on-set microphones don’t pick up the dialogue clearly due to any number of circumstances.

There are probably a couple of things at work in this scene that required the ADR from Hathaway. IMAX cameras are notorious for being loud and can be problematic when trying to pick up sound. Nolan and company mitigated this problem somewhat with a custom-built soundproof box for their cameras when filming the movie, but that could still be part of the issue. The other is a simpler explanation: it was windy on the wall overlooking the island. My guess is that it was a combination of the two, and while ADR is very common in modern filmmaking, it doesn’t usually stand out as much as this did to me. The same was true a few other times in the movie.

Overall, The Sound Quality Surprised Me

I saw The Odyssey in IMAX, so theoretically, I was seeing and hearing the movie in the perfect format. However, I was a bit surprised by how all over the place the sound was in the movie. In addition to the dialogue issues, I was also taken aback by how loud some moments were. I’m a music fan, and I see a lot of concerts, so loud doesn’t usually bother me, but at least in my screening, the sound was louder than I’ve ever experienced in a movie. I’ve seen many movies in the same theater and never heard anything like this.

At one point, my friend sitting next to me actually covered his ears. I can’t say whether this is due to the sound mixing in the movie or due to the theater I was sitting in, but it was LOUD to the point of being uncomfortable at times. Christopher Nolan movies are often controversial, but generally perfect when it comes to sound, so hearing both the ADR issues and the general volume of some of the action sequences wasn’t something I expected.

Let me be clear: as I was in the beginning, I still love the movie, and I think everyone should experience it in an IMAX theater, or at least on the biggest screen they can find. It’s visually stunning, and sound aside, I don’t think it will be nearly the same on even a big TV at home. I hope Nolan goes big like this the next time he makes a movie.

The Odyssey is already shaping up to be the biggest movie on the 2026 movie schedule, and the huge press tour happening around the film has been a blast to watch. A lot of this can be attributed to the magnetic chemistry of The Odyssey cast, which includes stars like Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland and Zendaya. Despite being in the same film, Holland and Zendaya are keeping their private life private on the tour. Yet Holland recently made a reference to his marriage to Zendaya in a recent interview to promote the film, and I love this unexpected moment.

Holland, along with Damon, Hathaway and Robert Pattinson participated an interview for Wired, where they answered the internet’s most searched questions about The Odyssey. One particular question was asked about Damon’s character, Odysseus, and his relationship to Zendaya’s character, Athena. After reading the question, Holland made a cute comment that was just too perfect. He said:

Holland's comment is surprising, considering the fact that he and Zendaya have been incredibly quiet about their relationship. The general public didn’t even know they got married until Zendaya’s stylist, Law Roach, let this information slip during a red carpet interview. The pair subsequently dodged marriage questions, with Zendaya only coming out deny that AI photos of a wedding were real. However, it now seems Holland has no problem brazenly (but briefly) mentioning the marriage.

It's true that at this point, the marriage has been made public knowledge, and Holland has also confirmed the wedding in the past few months, hearing it said still feels strange, because of how strict they have been about their privacy. When they first started dating, Zendaya shared a birthday post dedicated to Holland, but that was posted years ago, at a point at which the two weren't even active as a couple on social media. Even on this press tour, they haven’t been paired up for interviews, making sure to shift the cultural conversation to the movie and not their relationship.

Still, I personally love when Holland or Zendaya make little comments about each other like this latest one. While they prefer privacy, little jokes remind fans that these two are very much a unit. Fans have been shipping them since even before they started dating in late 2020. Also, the fact that these two continue working together over and over again, and have two movies coming out together this year also shows that this is a firm professional pairing as well as a romantic one.

In short, I’m always rooting for these two, and I hope even more little nuggets like Holland's joke come out of this Odyssey tour or the Spider-Man one.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is one of the biggest releases on the 2026 movie calendar, and I can already tell that the movie is going to get review-bombed once the major review sites like Rotten Tomatoes open up. The movie, which hits IMAX screens this weekend, was immediately controversial for all kinds of reasons once the cast list was revealed and the first trailer dropped earlier this year. Well, I’ve seen the movie, and I think the controversies are way overblown.

People Want To Hate This Movie

A couple of weeks ago, when Universal dropped the final trailer for The Odyssey, it was immediately hit with hostility. Internet denizens immediately “ratioed” the YouTube video–meaning downvoting it with the hopes of burying it in the algorithm. As of this writing, the trailer video is sitting on more than 780,000 downvotes (to just 83,000 thumbs up). Some of that might just be a herd mentality to get in on the fun, but there is plenty of evidence out there in comment sections and editorials that people are not happy with the movie Nolan has made. At least, the movie they think Nolan has made.

If you haven’t read much into it, there are a few different buckets of complaints that have people fired up. The first is historically based. This is a group of people who are critical of the armor worn by Odysseus (Matt Damon) and his men being incorrect for the Bronze Age, and the style of ship they are using to travel home from the Trojan War.

There is another bucket of people who are upset that the casting didn’t include more Greek actors, and, more pointedly, people who are upset that actors like Elliot Page and Lupita Nyong’o are in the movie at all. There is a third bucket of critics who don’t like some of the casual nature of the dialogue Nolan has used in his screenplay (and I actually fall into this category).

Let me tell you, all of these are all overblown.

Some Criticisms Are Just Not Right

Even before I saw the movie, I wasn’t all that concerned that these criticisms would affect how much I would enjoy it. After seeing it, I feel the same, with a small caveat. For starters, I think some of the criticisms are totally fair to discuss, like the armor, boats, and the dialogue, which I’ll get into. The casting “controversies” are not fair. This is a myth told by a modern filmmaker for a modern audience; as far as I'm concerned, anyone can play anyone.

The race and ethnicity of the actors is of zero concern for me. Less than zero. It’s no different than Kenneth Branagh casting Denzel Washington in his 1993 Shakespearean masterpiece Much Ado About Nothing. Is it period-accurate casting for Elizabethan England? Of course not, but Washington is one of the best actors ever, so I’m happy to see him in anything, especially doing Shakespeare. The same goes for all of the actors in the stacked cast of The Odyssey.

Others' Criticisms Are Fair In The Right Context

When it comes to the historical nature of some complaints, I have more sympathy. I’m not a historian or a classicist, but I do really appreciate it when movies based on real history take that responsibility seriously. That said, the inaccuracy of the armor worn by the Greeks and the ships they traveled on really didn’t bother me in the slightest. I knew it wasn’t period-correct for what soldiers wore in Bronze Age Greece, but they looked cool, and a movie should look cool!

It looks great, and it honestly is more what I think of as “ancient” armor. Frankly, just look at an example of Bronze Age armor, the kind that would be period appropriate, and tell me it’s not hilarious looking. The armor looks ridiculous to a modern eye, and using it probably would have been way more distracting for most people in the audience (all due respect to the historians in the audience). In that regard, the ships match the armor.

Now, when it comes to the dialogue, well, honestly, I’m kind of with the complainers here. I didn’t like some of the overly casual nature of some of the lines. One thing that has been particularly focused on by some critics is Telemachus (Tom Holland) calling his parents “mom” and “dad.” I didn’t think that was going to bug me, but it did. It really took me out of the movie at times. Again, this is a modern filmmaker making a movie for a modern audience, so I’m not expecting Ancient Greek or anything, but there is a formality to the society in the story, and using words like “mom” and “dad” just felt out of step with that formality.

Nolan’s use of more casual modern language might not be my favorite creative decision here, but it hardly ruins the movie. It didn’t even factor in when I woke up this morning and wrote down my thoughts about the movie after sleeping on it. The Odyssey isn’t a perfect movie, by any means, but it is still one of the best of the year, and certainly one of my favorites. There are some choices I can nitpick, and a couple of places here or there where Nolan’s ambitious decision to film exclusively in IMAX may have actually hurt the overall product, but it’s so grand in scope and vision that those things are easily dismissed for the greater good.

This Is All Overblown

It's worth noting that the actors who seem to have upset a lot of people, namely Page and Nyong’o, and to a lesser extent Travis Scott and Zendaya, don’t really have huge parts. Their collective screentime is minimal compared to Damon, Holland, and Anne Hathaway. More importantly, though, is that they are all legitimately great in their roles. Travis Scott’s role is an addition to the story that I really loved.

While we don't all have to agree with the artistic choices in this book-to-screen adaptation, like the casting, the language, and the costumes, I do really appreciate that Nolan and company are taking a big swing here. So please, don’t listen to the peanut gallery chirping from the sidelines without having actually seen the movie.

The Odyssey has been one of my most anticipated 2026 movies. That being said, I rolled my eyes at the runtime of two hours and 52 minutes after I got my ticket. Christopher Nolan’s latest film isn’t his longest movie – that would be Best Picture winner Oppenheimer – but objectively, that’s too long to sit in a movie theater. That is, unless the movie earns it. Well, did The Odyssey? I have thoughts.

Is The Odyssey’s Long Runtime A Problem?

Don’t get me wrong, some of the best movies I’ve ever seen are around three hours. But, right before I go out and see one, I get kind of stressed out. I usually like to get concessions for a movie like The Odyssey. Ugh, but when the moment comes when I have to use the restroom, it’s a tough call. I then have to make the decision to sit there in pain or try to figure out the right time when I can step away.

I’ll never forget when I went to see Dune: Part One. I ended up leaving to use the facilities when a certain character dies. It kind of messed up my first viewing. And then on the other hand, buying a premium movie ticket for something that ends up being both bad and long just sucks. Or, what if I end up sitting close to someone smelly or with a severe phone addiction?

There’s an easy fix for this. I think long movies need to have intermissions like they used to in the old days. Since that doesn’t seem to be on the table, I wince at long movie runtimes. In the case of The Odyssey, I’m very happy to report that I took no issue with it. Personally, I didn’t look at my watch until two hours into it, and the last hour was awesome. (Sure, it also helps that in-movie bathroom decision gods smiled on me that evening).

Personally, I wouldn’t have cut a single scene. If anything, I would have even sat through more! I’m thinking about going to see it again, and let me tell you, that’s very much a rarity for me to say these days. Critics have also been kind to The Odyssey, with the movie currently holding a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

What My CinemaBlend Colleagues Thought About The Runtime

As I mentioned before, a three-hour movie only works for me if it earns it. And, there was definitely enough within the pages of Homer’s The Odyssey for Nolan to adapt. Plus, he had to make tweaks to the source material to fit into one movie as is. I was curious about what my co-workers thought about the runtime. Here’s what a few of them said:

• “I love long movies when they are well constructed like The Odyssey. Because of the nature of the source material, the movie flows really well from scene to scene, and I don't think it drags at all.” - Hugh Scott, Syndication Editor
• “The Odyssey kept my attention for the entire 3 hours with its fast-paced storytelling and stunning visuals. If I had my way, it would have been 5 or 6 hours and split into two movies in order to more fully develop the side characters.” - Mack Rawden, Editor-In-Chief
• “I get why it's not two movies so that Nolan could end on a high note, but I thought the runtime was too long. I would definitely have taken two movies.” - Jessica Rawden, Managing Editor
• “I'm always wary of long movies; however, I didn't check my watch once watching The Odyssey. Those three hours flew by, and I was left wishing there was more time to dive even deeper into the story.” - Riley Utley, Weekend Editor

Of course, there’s a range of opinions here regarding the specifics, but overall I think we have a consensus: The Odyssey’s runtime works! If you, too, found yourself unsure about venturing to see it because of its length, I hope this helps reassure you it’s worth it. I know I would have appreciated knowing this before heading into it.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will soon join other 2026 movie releases in theaters, and it will very likely still have a few secrets still intact, from the mysterious new villain to Sadie Sink’s under-wraps role. But while I thought the movie’s title was a total gimme in terms of its contextual meaning, Tom Holland’s recent comments about the “Brand New Day” of it all have upended such assumptions.

The most basic reading of the latest Spidey flick’s title it being an overarching description of what Peter Parker’s life has been in the aftermath of No Way Home, without anyone remembering who he is. But it’s been four years, so I guess the use of “day” would be a bit limiting. Regardless, Holland clarified that’s not what the title is about at all.

Tom Holland's Comments On The New Movie's Title

In the new behind-the-scenes documentary Generations: The Evolution of Spider-Man, which just started streaming via Disney+ subscription, the past 20 years of live-action webslingers are explored, with the newest Spider-Man adventure getting focus near the end of the special. In fact, the very last line of it is fittingly where the new movie’s title is addressed. Here’s how Tom Holland put it:

But...like...what?!? What do you even mean with that? Does this mean the events of the movie play out in such a way where Doctor Strange's spell is eradicated, and everyone remembers who Peter is again? Or would that just qualify as Return To The Old Days?

Could it mean that something as equally game-changing as Strange's spell will come into play, making it so that Holland's Peter Parker has a brand new life outside of being a friendly neighborhood superhero? Could he get — [gulp] — cured and turned back into a non-powered human?

How Director Destin Daniel Cretton Addressed The Title's Meaning

Just before Tom Holland dropped that knowledge in the Disney+ special, director Destin Daniel Cretton shared his own thoughts about the title, but his comments are far more in line with how I was considering them before, without it being tied so directly to the last shot of the movie. In his words:

To me, that just sounds like he's saying the title applies to Peter having to wake up every morning to face unpredictable dangers of all kinds, which is more or less what I was assuming to begin with. So is he just playing coy, or is Holland being too spoilery?

I think two key question need to be answered here. One: how long ago the footage for the special was recorded? And two: how realistic have the reports been about Spider-Man: Brand New Day's ending getting changed up after the original ending was reportedly viewed as too much of a downer by test audiences?

If the rumored changes to the ending are legit, one can assume that Holland's comments were made only after the alterations were made, and not before. Otherwise, fans might go into Brand New Day looking for some last-minute context that doesn't exist anymore.

Of course, there's still time for Tom Holland to just up and spoil the ending anyway, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all pans out, and whether it will directly set up Spidey's return for Avengers: Secret Wars or another unannounced sequel. I can't wait! Cue the trailer!

Tom Holland has already checked off the kind of career goals most actors spend decades chasing. He landed Spider-Man, led a billion-dollar movie and worked with great filmmakers, including Christopher Nolan on The Odyssey. Still, there is one trophy missing from the shelf, and Holland has not pretended to be indifferent if an Oscar eventually joins the collection. That puts him in similar territory to Timothée Chalamet, who has spoken openly about wanting to become one of the greats. Yet, when Holland discussed his own awards ambitions, he compared himself to Leonardo DiCaprio.

Holland took part in an Esquire UK profile ahead of his jam-packed 2026 movie schedule. During the chat, he looked beyond his contemporaries and pointed to DiCaprio as the career model who makes waiting feel worthwhile. According to the outlet’s feature, Holland set himself a 15-year goal of winning an Academy Award amid a 2017 interview. With six years remaining, the actor said he is still interested but is not choosing every project for its awards potential. He explained:

It is a far more relaxed approach than the one Chalamet has taken publicly. After winning the 2025 SAG Award for A Complete Unknown, the Dune: Part Three star said he was “really in pursuit of greatness,” a line that stood out because actors usually sand down that kind of ambition during awards season. Chalamet later admitted he was disappointed when Adrien Brody won the Oscar instead.

The pursuit continued with Marty Supreme. Chalamet earned another Best Actor nomination at the 2026 Academy Awards, but Michael B. Jordan took home the trophy for Sinners. Chalamet remains Oscarless, though he has already collected three acting nominations and another nomination as one of Marty Supreme’s producers. Holland has not entered that part of the race yet, but his willingness to say he wants the same prize carries some of Chalamet’s refreshing refusal to act above it.

Holland also has several projects that could move him closer. His role as Telemachus in Nolan’s The Odyssey, (which he initially thought he was doing terribly), gives him a major dramatic showcase. Also, the long-in-development Fred Astaire biopic looks like the clearest awards vehicle of his career. The Spider-Man: Brand New Day star began as a dancer in Billy Elliot the Musical, making Astaire a natural fit even before the usual biopic and Oscar calculations come into play.

DiCaprio offers the Uncharted star a useful "measuring stick" that a long wait does not mean a failed career. He received his first nomination for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1994, then spent more than two decades collecting acclaimed performances and near misses before finally winning for The Revenant in 2016.

Holland may admire that patience, but his closest present-day comparison is still Chalamet. Both became franchise stars at a young age and have pursued more demanding work, and neither is shy about seeking the industry’s top acting prize. The difference is that Chalamet is already deep into the campaign, while Holland sounds pretty content to let the right role find him before he starts writing that speech to his mum.

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey is sparking plenty of conversations, and that’s ironic, considering the film hasn’t even hit theaters yet. The past few months have seen some social media users dissect this take on the epic Greek poem. A portion of people have taken issue with some of the casting choices and have also been pointing out historical inaccuracies. When it comes to that latter section of discourse, there’s one particularly annoying question Nolan and co. have been getting, and he recently addressed it.

One of the main details audiences have been noticing in the Odyssey trailers has been the presence of contemporary language in this book-to-screen adaptation. The actors don’t speak in a pronounced dialect but in a way that’s similar to how modern people would speak. While that hasn’t really deterred the Nolan stans, others have been wondering why the characters talk as they do. The topic came up when Nolan and cast member Tom Holland appeared on Channel 4’s The Four Cast, and the director shared his rationale:

This makes a lot of sense, as Nolan’s goal was apparently to avoid cultural clichés while crafting the film. He’s certainly correct that there can be “cultural prejudice” and, in terms of movies and TV shows about ancient civilizations, that can result in depictions that feel inauthentic. Based on his comments, Nolan wasn’t aiming to overthink it and sought to go with something straightforward and relatable when it came to the language. That feels like a smart move to me though, even before hearing this take, I wasn’t annoyed by the dialogue.

Still, there seem to be those who still take issue with the way characters speak. While Christopher Nolan addressed this recent question in a classy way, it’s hard not to get the feeling that he’s somewhat tired of it. Tom Holland – who plays Telemachus – also seems to be slightly perturbed. During the chat, he was asked about his character saying “dad” instead of “father,” and Holland dropped a respectful, yet very cheeky, response:

The Spider-Man actor has a point there as well. Overall, the discourse surrounding The Odyssey’s dialogue feels unnecessary, and the same is true regarding other points of criticism. Nolan himself has taken it all in stride, though, and he previously mentioned Interstellar while explaining his approach to world-building in the period piece. More recently, the Oscar winner invoked his Dark Knight Trilogy to discuss the importance of blocking out external chatter and focusing on making the best possible adaptation.

So far, Christopher Nolan’s approach also seems to be speaking for itself, as early Odyssey reactions have been very positive. If you couldn’t tell, I’m looking forward to checking out the historical epic for myself and seeing what Nolan, Tom Holland and the cast and crew bring to this beloved story. And, if the film connects with general audiences, I’ll be eager to see whether the discussions revolving around the modern language persist.

There’s one very famous and serious quote associated with Spider-Man that always comes up (you know what I’m talking about). However, the Spider-Man movies are packed with very funny lines too that are also worth quoting. In fact, there’s one line from Spider-Man: Homecoming that Zendaya says to Tom Holland “a lot” that’s hilarious.

So, as Tom Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon promote Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s release on the 2026 movie schedule, they were asked about movie quotes they use in their everyday lives during an interview with BBC Radio 1. In response, the Challengers star recalled a funny line Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark says in the trio's first Spider-Man movie:

While The Drama star claimed Holland wouldn’t agree with her, he actually did, confirming that she does “say that a lot.”

I get why it’s stuck with them, too. Not only is it a memorable line in Spider-Man: Homecoming, it’s actually said multiple times by Tony Stark (which you can witness by watching the movie with a Disney+ subscription). He says it once right after the whole debacle with the Staten Island Ferry, telling Peter:

He also says it at the very end of the movie, after Peter defeated The Vulture. Both complimenting the boy’s actions and reprimanding him, Robert Downey Jr.’s character said:

While it’s considered one of Tony Stark’s funniest lines, and it’s easily one of the sillier MCU quotes, it is admittedly an odd statement. That’s something Zendaya, Holland and Jacob Batalon joked about too, as they spoke about how it doesn’t make much sense, but it totally works in the movie:

• Zendaya: I think that was just like—what?
• Jacob Batalon: I think that’s just a bad white guy thing to say.
• Tom Holland: Again, not written. I remember walking down the thing, and he said that. And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’
• Zendaya: [I don’t know] what that means, but it’s great.

I totally see what they’re saying; it is an odd thing to say. However, it’s also not that uncommon, and it’s used often when people mess up big time or embarrass themselves, which Peter did on a few occasions in Homecoming.

Now, if you’ve seen the Marvel movies in order, you know how quotable they are. And personally, Homecoming is one of my favorites to quote. It’s awesome that Zendaya does that too, and I love that the line she references most is this hilarious one that’s said by Robert Downey Jr.

Overall, this whole discussion made me want to rewatch Homecoming. However, it also made me even more excited for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, because I’m sure it will be full of great one-liners, just like the other three Holland-led Spidey films are. So, to see if that’s the case, you can see this trio's fourth Spider-Man movie in theaters on July 31.

Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is still a few days away from hitting the 2026 movie schedule, but for months it's been in the firing line for angry people on the internet. I know it’s best to stay out of the comment section, but sometimes I can’t help myself. It doesn’t take long when I do dip my toes in to see some of the major complaints that people have even before seeing the movie. I have to say, none of these are concerns of mine. I remain highly optimistic about this epic that is about to unfold for all of us seeing the movie next week.

The Casting Seems To Be The Focus Of Many Commenters’ Ire

There is no question that Nolan has assembled one heck of a cast. Matt Damon leads the movie as Odysseus. Anne Hathaway is playing his wife, Penelope. Tom Holland is playing Telemachus, his son. Joining them, we’ve got stars like Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton (who has apparently killed it with her performance), and Jon Bernthal, along with many others. It’s stacked. There are two or three cast members who have some people upset, and it makes no sense.

Lupita Nyong'o (Helen of Troy), John Leguizamo (Eumaeus), and Elliot Page (Sinon) have drawn the most wrath, and Travis Scott (playing a bard) has also taken some shots. Of course, it’s easy to see why these four have been in the firing line, and frankly, I think it’s all silly (and offensive, of course). The Odyssey is a myth. It’s not history. Historical accuracy should take a backseat to storytelling in this case. Helen of Troy wasn’t a real person, so why does it matter if the actress playing the character doesn’t look Greek or Spartan? Nyong'o certainly fits the description of being beautiful, and she is one of the most talented actresses in the world. That’s by far enough for me.

The Accents, Armor, And Ships Are Also Popular Complaints

The second most common whine is that the armor Odysseus and his men wear is not period-accurate. I’m all for historical accuracy in film; in fact, it’s often a deciding factor in whether I like a movie or not (I’m looking at you, Napoleon), but again, this is a myth. I don’t care that Damon and his cohorts are dressed in armor that doesn’t fit the age. That’s not the point of the story here. Let’s be honest, period-accurate armor looks rather ridiculous, and so making it look “cooler” is just fine by me. The same goes for the ships used by our hero and his men. Yeah, they look more like Viking ships than boats from ancient Greece, but again, this story is a myth, so why care?

Another popular refrain seems to be that all of the actors are using American accents in the movie, even the Brits. I have to say, again, why is this something people are mad about? They aren’t speaking ancient Greek in this modern telling of the myth, either. No one is upset about that, because everyone understands why the movie is in English, so what does it matter which accents are being used? Nolan apparently was looking for consistency, and so this decision makes total sense. This is seriously just complaining to complain.

Luckily for me, none of these creative decisions bother me in the slightest, and I can say that this is by far my most anticipated movie of the summer.

Celebrity couples have a habit of fascinating the public and making a ton of headlines in the process. We've seen this with pairs like Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, although recently all eyes have been on Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. The pair got married over the Fourth of July weekend at Madison Square Garden, and fans are eager for any photos of the event. They haven't been released just yet, but the newlyweds have been dealing with the same AI issues as Zendaya and Tom Holland did.

Zendaya and Tom Holland got married in private, and fake AI-generated images from their wedding have been trickling out since. The same thing has been happening to Kelce and Swift, to the dismay of fans who want to see the real thing. Director Joseph Kahn was an actual guest for the big day, and took to Twitter to poke holes in those AI images. In his words:

Kahn also shared an image of himself at the wedding on IG, although he was careful not to reveal too much about what things looked/felt like inside MSG. Security was seemingly tight, which is why no legit photos of Kelce and Swift's nuptials have leaked online. But that hasn't stopped folks from creating phony images using AI.

It's hard not to see the similarities between these fake wedding photos and the ones that hit the internet after Zendaya and Tom Holland got married. Zendaya's image architect Law Roach hilariously responded to those faux photos, saying:

Law Roach and Joseph Kahn's comments do share some similarities; namely, that AI couldn't create anything that actually lives up to the reality of these celebrity weddings. Hopefully the generations of curious fans out there will be treated to some real photos from these events. That is, whenever the two pairs are willing to share with the class.

Fans love to ship their favorite A-list couple, so these fake images from the recent weddings were likely inevitable. Zendaya and Tom Holland have always valued their privacy, and while Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's wedding had a massive guest list, it's clear that it was a phone-free event. Only time will tell if/when we get to see legitimate photos from these two nuptials, but it's clear that interest in seeing these celebrities on their happy day isn't going to die down anytime soon.

Unfortunately, it's unclear when this day might happen. For now, fans can enjoy the two couples' professional work, especially Holland and Zendaya who have two separate movies coming out this July: Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey.

Christopher Nolan is not exactly known for handing out praise like Halloween candy. Part of his public image is built on precision, intensity and the sense that getting a simple “good” from him on set might feel like winning a tiny acting Oscar. So when Zendaya apparently earned a “perfect” while making the forthcoming The Odyssey, Matt Damon and Tom Holland were in their feelings. What I did not see coming was Nolan trolling them this hard.

Damon has worked with the prestigious filmmaker multiple times, while Holland is joining the director’s orbit for the first time in the upcoming 2026 movie release. Apparently the director’s praise for Zendaya became a talking point on set. Rotten Tomatoes shared a clip from Fandango’s Big Ticket interview on Instagram, where Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Matt Damon and Nolan sat down to discuss the new movie. During the conversation, the cast brought up Nolan’s praise for Zendaya’s performance as Athena in The Odyssey. You can see the post below.

The setup here comes from Damon, who previously talked about what it was like to work with the Oppenheimer director and how rare that kind of praise apparently is. According to the writer and star of Good Will Hunting, Nolan is not a director who showers actors with excessive praise. A “good” from him means you did the job. A “great” sounds like it might require paperwork. So when Zendaya got “perfect,” Damon and Holland were basically left staring at each other like two kids who just found out someone else got extra recess.

The Rip performer summed up the jealousy pretty beautifully. He said:

That is such a specific actor complaint, and I love it. Damon is an Oscar-winning performer who has been in some of the biggest movies of the last few decades, and yet here he is, spiritually pacing the set because Zendaya unlocked the rare Nolan achievement badge. Holland apparently joined him in the grievance, which makes the whole thing even better. Imagine two major movie stars comparing report cards while the young Dune actress is off somewhere being Athena.

Then the Oscar-winning filmmaker was asked which scene of Zendaya’s had earned the “perfect,” and this is where the whole thing becomes glorious. He could have answered seriously. He could have named a specific scene, talked about the emotional weight of the moment or given some thoughtful director explanation. Instead, he delivered this:

For the Euphoria star, that is an enormous compliment. She is playing Athena, which is already a pretty intimidating assignment, and hearing Nolan speak about her performance that way is no small thing. The role puts her in the middle of one of literature’s biggest stories, surrounded by a massive cast that includes Damon, Holland and a whole fleet of major names.

Of course, this is not where the auteur filmmaker left things. He continued:

Okay, the Dark Knight director has jokes. Everyone is laughing, but it must be quietly devastating, because Nolan does not even have to raise his voice or wink at the camera. He just calmly says Zendaya was always perfect, which means Damon and Holland’s entire complaint gets launched into the sun.

For Damon and Holland, though, this is now part of the behind-the-scenes lore. They can keep chasing that “perfect,” but Zendaya already seems to have the crown, which makes me even more excited to catch her performance in the upcoming book-to-screen adaptation.

The British-American moviemaker has also emphasized that The Odyssey is the first feature film to be shot entirely in IMAX. So if that format is available near you, it may be worth grabbing a big ol’ Trojan horse popcorn bucket and seeing it on the largest screen possible.

David Ehrlich of IndieWire notes that The Odyssey is “less despairing” than the Academy Award Best Picture winner from 2023, and despite some druthers, it’s a ride worth going on. In Ehrlich’s words:

Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture wrote an epic reaction of his own on X, praising Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland’s performances. He also writes that this level of storytelling is rare and deserves to be honored. The post reads, in part:

Jeremy Mathai of SlashFilm gives his stamp of approval, and while calling The Odyssey’s cast list lengthy would be an understatement, Mathai casts his vote for the most impactful performance, writing:

Tom Holland's already done a lot of big movies throughout his career, but working with Christopher Nolan on an epic on the scale of The Odyssey is a whole different beast. It'd be intimidating for any young actor and, while he got an early boost of confidence, he also got rattled when shooting a scene. Holland thought he was disappointing Nolan during the shoot, but it turned out there was something else at play.

Holland spoke about his experience working on the upcoming 2026 movie release during an interview with Fandango. After recalling an early scene with his MCU co-star Jon Bernthal that gave him confidence, Holland remembered feeling uneasy when Nolan frequently cut his scenes mid-performance. He said:

I can imagine that Christopher Nolan shouting "cut" three minutes into a scene would devastate any actor, especially if they felt they were in the zone. Holland had amassed a lot of reverence for Nolan and the way he runs his sets, so it had to be devastating to think he was letting him down.

Fortunately, that wasn't the case. While they may create great images (and make for snazzy-looking popcorn buckets), IMAX cameras have one downside, and Tom Holland didn't know that. As the star recalled:

It seems like after the Spider-Man star was filled in, he had a wave of relief crash over him -- one that was harder than the ones that shipwrecked Odysseus during his journey in The Odyssey. Fortunately, Holland didn't let Christopher Nolan down, and he plays a sizable role in the R-rated historical epic.

In the movie, Holland plays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus (Matt Damon) and Queen Penelope (Anne Hathaway). Telemachus has grown into a man in his father's absence and is burdened with protecting his mother from suitors who seek to step in and take over the land.

It's likely that a portion of readers are vaguely familiar with The Odyssey, which is often required reading in high school in the United States. Admittedly, I only remember the part with the Sirens and the Cyclops, but I'm sure more of it will come back to me once I'm watching it on a big screen with my Trojan Horse popcorn bucket.

With an all-star cast lined up, The Odyssey is poised to be a cinematic spectacle, and it could draw people to cinemas. This production has "prestige film" written all over it, and I'm already wondering if it'll net some serious awards later this year and in 2026. It'll be interesting to see if it lives up to the hype.

After Spider-Man: No Way Home, Tom Holland’s web-slinger was left in one of the loneliest places the franchise has ever put him, with Doctor Strange’s spell wiping Peter Parker from the memories of everyone who knew him. As excitement continues building for the 2026 movie release, the Brand New Day cast members Jacob Batalon and Zendaya are out here trolling Peter Parker about everyone forgetting him, with Holland fully committing to the bit by making some of the best faces.

The official Spider-Man movie Instagram account shared a funny video featuring Holland, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, playing directly into the heartbreaking ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the clip, Batalon and Zendaya appear to act as if they do not know the Spidey actor, while he makes sad little Peter Parker faces at the camera. The post’s caption reads, “Peter, who?” which is rude, but honestly pretty funny.

The text on the video twists the knife perfectly: “when your besties forget that you’re also their bestie.” Brutal, but fair. By the end of No Way Home, Doctor Strange’s spell had erased Peter Parker from everyone’s memory. The world still remembers Spider-Man, but the person beneath the mask has been erased from the lives of the people who loved him most.

Holland has teased exactly one person still knowing who is behind the webbed mask, but Ned seemingly does not remember being his guy in the chair. MJ also does not remember their relationship. So yes, this is a cute Instagram bit, but it’s built on emotional wreckage. Very Spider-Man coded, honestly.

The timing is especially fun because Brand New Day feels like a title loaded with reset energy. Holland is back for his fourth solo movie, and the franchise seems positioned to move Peter into a new era. That is also why he can’t stop, won't stop dropping Miles Morales’ name when it comes to Spider-Man’s future. The Uncharted actor has made it clear he wants to help bring Miles into the MCU someday, and he has talked about paying it forward for the mentorship he received from Robert Downey Jr.

But before Peter can become a mentor to another wallcrawler the guy probably needs a life again. That is what makes the Ned and MJ question so compelling. Does Brand New Day restore those relationships? Does Peter try to stay away because he thinks they are safer without him? Does the movie actually make him sit in the loneliness that No Way Home left him with?

The filmmakers clearly know fans are asking those questions, which is probably why this little trolling video works so well. The post does not give away any plot details, but it taps directly into that emotional thread. It is a wink, a tease and a reminder that Peter’s situation is still pretty brutal, even when it is being played as a social media joke. Stop and think about it for even a minute, and the whole bit suddenly has a pretty melancholy undertone.

It helps that Holland, Zendaya and Batalon have such easy chemistry. Their dynamic has been one of the secret weapons of the modern Spider-Man movies, and fans spent years watching Peter, MJ and Ned grow into one of the MCU’s most charming little friend groups.

Peter Parker may be thinking about a brand new day, and Holland may be dreaming about Miles Morales in the future. But for now, the Spider-Man social team seems perfectly happy trolling fans with the saddest bestie problem in the MCU.

However, earlier this month, Holland subtly revealed he and his longtime partner had indeed exchanged vows. Ahead of that, though, AI-generated photos of the couple made the rounds and seemed to provide glimpses into their big day. Zendaya’s stylist, Law Roach, is now weighing in on the pics, and his take only makes me want to see the real dress more.

It was around this past March that insiders made allegations about Holland and Zendaya having gotten secretly married, with further details suggesting they married in Italy. So, when the AI pictures dropped, many were hyped by the supposed sight of the two Spider-Man stars celebrating their nuptials. Law Roach discussed that viral madness when he appeared as a guest on Good Morning America. Roach dropped an A+ response after being asked what he was thinking when he saw the wedding dress depicted in the faux photos:

First and foremost, I’m cracking up over Roach’s take on the fake dress, as the method-dressing master couldn’t have timed that quip any better. The humorous nature of the comments aside, though, they’re also sure to make fans wonder even more about what the real dress looks like. Something fashion devotees likely know about Roach is that he doesn’t play when it comes to his designs, and that’s especially true when it comes to the pieces he curates for longtime friend and colleague Zendaya.

Roach was actually one of the first people to allude to the fact that a wedding had occurred, as he mused back in March that fans had missed it. Despite that, the Project Runaway judge has remained tight-lipped on details regarding the ceremony and the bride’s dress. Even Christian Siriano claimed Roach was keeping dress secrets for the sake of his friend, Z. Whether the public will ever get to see that dress is unknown, but when asked if the real dress looked like the one in the photo, Roach said:

Some may scoff at the notion of AI photos fooling some people, but that’s apparently what happened. Zendaya previously revealed that the photos caught some of her loved ones off guard, and they apparently called her out for not scoring invites to the big day. Even when Holland confirmed the wedding had taken place, he only did so due to explaining that his own grandmother was confused by the pics that surfaced online.

What’s very evident, at this point, is that Zendaya and Tom Holland are very protective of their relationship and personal, meaning they want to keep aspects of it for themselves. That’s definitely admirable and respectable, though I know fans still would probably like to see that wedding dress. I’ll just say that we probably shouldn’t expect the couple or Law Roach to share any genuine photos.

Christopher Nolan assembled an all-star cast for The Odyssey and, as part of that, the filmmaker reunites with Tenet's Robert Pattinson. In turn, not only will Pattinson be reunited with his The Drama co-star, Zendaya, but he will also collaborate with frequent co-star Tom Holland. The two British actors seem to be very comfortable with each other at this point. At least, that's the feeling I get as I crack up about how Pattinson trolled Holland during the filming of their upcoming book-to-screen adaptation.

In The Odyssey, Robert Pattinson plays the role of Antinous, who has an antagonistic dynamic with Tom Holland’s Telemachus. Said animosity stems from Antinous conspiring to marry Telemachus' mother, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), amid the absence of his father, Odysseus (Matt Damon). As Pattinson explained to Empire, he had a lot of fun playing up his character's nastiness, and I wish I could've been a fly on the wall:

I can’t stop laughing at the idea of the Twilight star trailing behind the MCU actor and talking about wanting to be his “daddy!” That’s truly hysterical (and maybe a tad weird). However, if it helped the two build their dynamic accordingly, I'd say it's worth it.

Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland’s playful banter probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. After all, the co-stars worked together on The Lost City of Z as well as the terrifying Netflix movie, The Devil All the Time. With three joint ventures under the stars' belts, I'm loving that the pair get along so well.

Despite the playful teasing Pattinson did on the set of The Odyssey, Holland seemed to enjoy his time working with him on set. Holland also spoke to Empire, and shared some glowing thoughts about Pattinson:

It goes without saying that Pattinson firmly commits to his roles, and I'm very eager to see the kind of villainous energy he brings to his character in Christopher Nolan's latest historical drama.

On that note, when I see the film, I'll be paying close attention to the tense scenes between Telemachus and Antinous. While those moments are sure to be tense, I may actually start chuckling to myself due to the knowledge that Pattinson was having fun with his character's sliminess on set.

This year is a big one for Tom Holland and Zendaya. Firstly, after much speculation, it was finally confirmed that they did get married. There’s no doubt that Holland and Zendaya have undeniable chemistry playing love interests in the Spider-Man movies. Thankfully, Holland wants to see that too, as he explained to Vanity Fair France at Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s UGC Cine Cité Bercy fan event:

Well, this needs to happen immediately. That's because not only do I want to see these two in a rom-com, but they both have the musical background to pull off what Holland suggested in a magnificent way.

For instance, Zendaya started on Disney Channel, dancing and singing on Shake It Up! while also releasing two albums. Not to mention, she topped the music charts with songs from Euphoria, and she starred in the musical flick The Greatest Showman. So, you know singing and dancing won’t be a problem for the Emmy winner, as Tom Holland said. And because we haven’t seen the actress/singer in a light romance movie before, why not take that genre on with her real-life husband?

As for Tom Holland, he's got some moves of his own! In fact, he joined the cast of Billy Elliot on the West End when he was only 12 years old. Now, Holland is set to play Fred Astaire in the song-and-dance man’s biopic. He's actually started working on the film too, as he explained on Good Hang with Amy Poehler that he had his first dance rehearsal for the flick recently. So, we know he's got the moves; now, we just need to hear his vocal chops.

You have to admit that a Tom Holland-Zendaya rom-com is exactly what we need. While the pair share plenty of cute romance scenes in the Spider-Man movies, their characters still face the constant threat of enemies. So, I'd love to see them tell a story where their characters simply fall in love. Plus, The Drama actress looked very impressed watching her other half dancing ballet in front of her and doing a funny impression of his Billy Elliot singing. So, I can see them having a lot of fun singing and dancing together in a musical.

Villain situation is going to be, with the Russos’ Avengers: Doomsday as the ultra-epitome of that idea. Not so much with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, though, which tipped fans off to both Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, but without word on specific big bads. It’s really starting to make my Nicky Sense tingle. (Editor Note: destroy the phrase “Nicky Sense.”)

It’s obviously a known mystery amongst fans that major villain reveals have yet to surface, but Tom Holland himself spoke to that notion at one of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s red carpet premieres, as seen in a clip shared on X. He shared:

Certainly not the first time someone has used the "unlike anything we've seen before" boast to address a villain, and this is certainly an instance where we literally haven't seen the villain yet. So it tracks, logically speaking. But having Holland address it as a "mystery" without spoiling anything sparked a few theories in my head about why Marvel and the Spider-Man team are waffling on reveals. (Especially if the antagonist ends up being Tombstone, who first took over the rumor mill back in February, or others like Ramrod, Tarantula and Boomerang.

Theory 1: It's Connected To Doctor Doom, And Can't Be Revealed Until Doomsday's Trailer Is Out

The idea here is that whatever villain Spider-Man is dealing with in Brand New Day's reworked version of reality is directly related to Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, and that Kevin Feige & Co. won't want to show off the villain's iconography without first revealing RDJ's full Doom look in an Avengers: Doomsday trailer, which is rumored to be going public for San Diego Comic-Con.

It's not extremely likely, but it's possible that Spider-Man: BND's reshoots went down to incorporate things from Doomsday that hadn't yet been conceived when director Destin Daniel Cretton went through the initial production phase, and/or that already filmed scenes needed touch-ups to bring in new visuals. How cool and depressing would it be if Peter had to face off against a Tony Stark clone, or if Sadie Sink is playing a femme Doombot?

Theory 2: The Villain Reveal Will Be A Twist Involving A New Character

Also possible: Spider-Man: Brand New Day may already revealed its key villain by proxy of one of the new actors joining this corner of the MCU. Which pretty much limits this theory to Severance great Tramell Tillman's Bill Metzger or one of the as-yet-unidentified characters being played by Sadie Sink or Keith David. unidentified character.

Although it could technically end up being Eman Esfandi, who will be portraying a new love interest for Zendaya's MJ. Such a transparent placement might be a weak story move, but it's still feasible, all things considered.

Theory 3: The Villain Will Be A Variant Of An Already Existing Character

To flip the previous idea, it's possible the biggest foe trying to take Spider-Man down is someone who's already very familiar to MCU audiences, only under the guises of a more heroic role. What if, much like Robert Downey Jr. jumping from Iron Man to Doctor Doom, another beloved actor flips from playing a virtuous hero to playing a devious bad guy?

Could we see Chris Evans taking over the role of Green Goblin or something, or something even wilder, like Tobey Maguire and/or Andrew Garfield taking on new life as Brand New Day's antagonist(s)? That sounds way wilder than whatever will probably happen, but one can dream. I'm also not counting out the idea that the previously spoiled Savage Hulk could be the main villain.

Theory 4: It's Ned

To stretch the previous theory out a little more, maybe we're not talking about a variant of a superhero character, but rather an alternate version of someone from Peter Parker's personal life. Such as, oh I dunno, Jacob Batalon's Ned. The movie's twisted version of reality makes this theory seem easier to pull off than it would if Ned was still knowingly Peter's BFF.

But maybe the Ned we see in the trailers isn't just the same memory-lapsed dude that we're meant to think he is. Maybe this Ned is all-knowing and responsible for the dangers and terrors that come Peter's way in Brand New Day. Plus, I don't think it's a coincidence that an anagram for the movie's subtitle is: Brand Ned Way. That's pretty much all the evidence needed, amirite?

So, naturally, when Robert Downey Jr. privately told him he was returning to the MCU, he did what any noted spoiler might do: he told someone special right away.

In a recent Cinemania interview with Holland and Zendaya while the two were promoting their upcoming 2026 movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the couple talked about the moment Zendaya learned that Downey was returning to Marvel as Doctor Doom. The in-demand actor admitted the news reached her almost immediately after the phone call with his Marvel mentor. He recalled:

Honestly, as far as Tom Holland spoilers go, this one barely counts as a crime. Zendaya is part of the Spider-Man franchise, and the couple is obviously much more than co-stars, as they've been in a long-term relationship with marriage rumors. That is probably the safest possible setup for everyone involved. Holland can still be excited about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday release and whatever comes after, while Marvel keeps the really dangerous story beats locked in a vault somewhere.

It also makes sense that Downey would call the young MCU star himself. Their connection goes back to Captain America: Civil War, where Tony Stark introduced this version of Peter Parker to the larger Marvel universe. That mentor relationship became one of the emotional pillars of Holland’s run, especially through Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Off-screen, Holland has often credited Downey with helping him navigate the madness of joining Marvel at such a young age. So hearing that Downey gave him an early heads-up about his return feels genuinely sweet.

The twist, of course, is that the Oppenheimer star is not returning as Tony Stark. He is coming back as Doctor Doom, which raises approximately 9,000 questions about what that means for Peter Parker. However, I’m surprised at how much Tom Holland’s performance of Rihanna’s “Umbrella” has been coming up — and especially how the latest mention relates to his wife Zendaya.

It’s been nine years since Tom Holland donned the black wig, shorts and fishnet stockings on Lip Sync Battle, but he is still talking about what he’s called the “most stressful thing I’ve ever done in my life.” It sounds like something great came out of it, though, as a source allegedly close to Zendaya said the “Umbrella” moment was when she “fell hard” for Holland and “sealed the deal” for her in their relationship. The insider told the Daily Mail:

While the Spider-Man: Far From Home stars didn’t officially confirm their relationship until 2021, rumors about the two date back to 2017 — the same year of their Lip Sync Battle — so the timing actually works out. As seen in the video, Peter’s skin is also extremely hard to penetrate, and even a needle is unable to poke through. You know what I think? I think the NYC hero had to get some far tougher skin so that working alongside Jon Bernthal’s Punisher doesn’t crush his optimism and genial nature.

But let's focus more on the major webbing advancement that's revealed. Peter is now able to create his signature webbing not just through synthetics and dispensers, but biologically through his own body. It's a comic book detail that hasn't been utilized across all Spider-Man stories, but has definitely been a hook for certain takes on the character across the multiverse, such as the cloned Kaine Parker and Silk.

I love that Peter's so grossed out by it happening in the teaser, since that probably is a very strange feeling to experience out of the blue. Especially if it's coming out of the same place where the faux webbing came from. But I think those physical sensations will be the least of his problems when it comes to his new power.

Big picture-wise, it's possible that these mutations will inevitably turn Peter into the Man-Spider, although I don't really foresee that playing out in live-action. Instead, and not to be a total pessimist, but I have to assume that Peter's organic webbing will be the first of his newer powers to work against him.

How? By running out at the most inopportune moment imaginable. Arguably the biggest issue with Peter's previous forms of web-making is that there was only a finite amount of material for him to utilize. And one might think that making webs biologically would eradicate any supply and demand hiccups, but the human body isn't really designed to create any particular organic material ad infinitum. There's a limit to everything our bodies can do, presumably even when radioactive arachnids are the source.

So I'm now around 93% convinced that the second act of Spider-Man: Brand New Day will feature a scene where Peter makes a comment about his organic webs never running out, so that in the third act, just when he's about to take down any and all villainous entities for good, his new webbing holes will putter out and fail him. And just when he finally left his other canisters back at home. Tsk tsk, Spider-Man. Tsk tsk, indeed.

Or hey, maybe it won't be quite as dire, and his webbing will run out right when Mark Ruffalo's newly giant-again Hulk goes to smack the crap out of him.

It feels like the hunt for the next James Bond actor has been going on forever, and various names have been in the mix since Daniel Craig signed off as 007 with 2021's No Time to Die. Among the actors who's been mentioned as a potential successor is Tom Holland, who's obviously one of the industry's biggest stars right now. Holland was recently asked about the possibility of donning the tuxedo and playing Commander Bond and, while doesn't sound opposed to it, there's one aspect of the situation that's "difficult" for him.

Holland opened up about the idea of himself playing the next Bond while engaging in a wide-ranging chat with Esquire. He has been one of the primary names being discussed among the list of 007 hopefuls, yet he's notably remained quiet up to this point. So, given how keen Holland seems on the notion of playing the beloved super spy, it may be surprising that he hasn't offered himself for the role. He said:

I guess carrying on the Bond legacy is the dream of many young English actors, and Holland actually does fit the bill. He has a clean cut swagger of a classic 007, though he could also bring something new to the role, a sense of innocence. It's been rumored that the Bond producers are aiming to go for a younger candidate for the next installment as well, which is a departure from Daniel Craig's more seasoned portrayal.

However, Holland was also open about why he hasn’t openly campaigned for the role, and a lot of it has to do with maintaining his relationship with iconic movie producer Amy Pascal. As he explained:

For context, Pascal is not only the producer for the next run of upcoming James Bond films but also the producer behind the Spider-Man movies that Tom Holland has been a part of. This is a pretty tight business relationship spanning over 10 years, considering Holland was cast as Peter Parker in 2015. Not wanting to take advantage of that relationship makes sense, but also this is the link that could possibly make the next Bond film a hit. This partnership has already created something so special with Spider-Man, so why not see if lightning can strike twice?

Don't be mistaken, though. Because, despite his hesitancy, and wanting to be respectful of his business relationships, Holland is maintaining his interest in Bond:

I love that Holland is finally putting himself out there for this role. All in all, not only does he seem to be a great fit on the surface, but he obviously knows how to carry a multi-million dollar franchise on his back. He’s not the only contender, with some predicting the Bond team might go even younger and cast Louis Partridge. At the same time, many 007 fans have suggested names like Jacob Elordi and Callum Turner as interesting prospects. It’s a complex race for a role, and I personally can’t wait to see the new take on the character when Bond is finally cast.

Between the newest trailer, the mysterious plot details and Tom Holland and Zendaya making the rounds, every little detail is being picked apart. Apparently, that now includes Zendaya's wardrobe, which features a ton of black. Now, one fan theory about this color choice has me seriously nervous.

Over the last several appearances promoting Brand New Day, fans have noticed that the Euphoria actress has repeatedly worn black. Normally, I would write this off as someone simply having excellent taste. Still, one viral fan reaction on X made me pause and wonder if Marvel fans are accidentally manifesting something terrible:

As expected, Marvel fans immediately turned detective. Some viewers think the darker looks are teasing a death, which obviously worries me, but others also think it could be a tease for Spider-Man's black symbiote suit. Could Zendaya be quietly hinting at Venom's eventual arrival in the franchise? Maybe!

A few people have even suggested that the colors symbolize MJ's emotional state after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Peter Parker was erased from her memory. Some of the best responses included:

So she might be mourning their breakup, even if she’s not consciously aware of what she lost.

Could A Major Character Die In Brand New Day?

Here's the thing. The original post made me laugh, but the more I thought about it, the more nervous I became. Marvel loves visual storytelling, even in promotional tours. Actor interviews and promos have become extensions of marketing campaigns, even down to wardrobes. Stars frequently coordinate colors and themes with the projects they're promoting. We've already seen both Zendaya (a known method dresser) and Holland appear in combinations of black, white, blue and red during various events. But, beyond the fashion, there is a legitimate reason for fans to be worried.

Brand New Day picks up after the devastating ending of No Way Home, which left Peter Parker completely alone. MJ, Ned and the rest of the world no longer remember him. The trailer has already hinted at a darker, more isolated Peter, and rumors about villains like Sadie Sink’s mysterious character and the possible arrival of the symbiote have only fueled speculation.

Spider-Man stories are also notoriously painful. Uncle Ben died. Gwen Stacy died. Aunt May died. Peter Parker practically has tragedy written into his DNA. So, when fans joke, "Who is dying?" forgive me if my brain immediately starts creating worst-case scenarios.

To be clear, I have absolutely no evidence that Zendaya's wardrobe is secretly foreshadowing a funeral. For all I know, black simply looks fantastic on her, which, admittedly, it does. Still, comic books and the studios have trained me to look for clues everywhere when it comes to new upcoming Marvel movies.

Now, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day approaches on the 2026 movie schedule, the Odyssey actor is working overtime to not spoil the highly anticipated summer blockbuster, and fans can’t get enough of how adorably nervous he is.

Thunderbolts* actor Wyatt Russell jokingly compared Marvel media training to that of being held at knife point; one wrong move and you’re done. I can’t imagine how much media training the poor guy has gone through, and he’s probably gotten countless lectures from Marvel and his agents. If you’re like me, a lifelong Spider-Man fan, you’re probably more than pumped because not only did we get a brand-new trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but we are also inching closer to its release on the 2026 movie schedule. As someone raised on Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, I sometimes forget just how much “weight” comes with carrying the mantle of such a beloved character. Well, Tom Holland’s co-star and real-life partner Zendaya just reminded me by pointing out her favorite thing about him playing Spidey, and it has nothing to do with his onscreen persona.

In a chat with Fandango for the upcoming Spider-Man film, Zendaya explained that her favorite part of watching Holland be Spider-Man is not a stunt, a scene or even the way he plays Peter Parker. For her, it has everything to do with how he handles being Spidey off-screen. She explained:

We are finally nearing the 2026 movie calendar release of Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Spidey in the upcoming Marvel movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day. So it may seem a bit premature to fan-cast the next web-head. However, Holland is already thinking about what the character's future could look like after he eventually hangs up the mask.

Holland recently spoke with Esquire and talked about putting the finishing touches on Brand New Day, calling it the best Spider-Man movie he and the team have made. He also described the new film as more of a mystery, with Peter Parker feeling lost and trying to figure out who he is. But the most interesting bit may be what he said about his long-term relationship with the franchise and who could follow in his footsteps. Per the actor:

That is an intriguing choice. Cooper, the young star of Adolescence, has become one of the buzziest younger actors around, and Holland clearly sees the appeal of giving Spider-Man to someone with fresh energy and serious talent. I personally love Cooper’s performance as Heathcliff in the first half of the controversial Wuthering Heights so, yes, he has the chops.

Tom Holland Wants To Help The Next Spider-Man

Coming from the Crowded Room star, that endorsement carries weight. He knows what it feels like to be the young British actor suddenly stepping into one of the most recognizable superhero roles on the planet.

The bigger context is that the Avengers actor is clearly thinking about legacy. In the same interview, he said he wants to stay involved with future Spider-Man movies after his tenure ends. He said he would love to be a producer, though getting that credit on future films may be difficult. More importantly, he said he wants to be for the next Spider-Man what Robert Downey Jr. was for him. He told Esquire:

That tracks with Marvel's take on Peter Parker and the actor's origin story. Downey’s Tony Stark helped introduce this version of Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, and their on-screen mentor relationship became one of the emotional pillars of Holland’s early run. Off-screen, he has often credited Downey with helping guide him through joining Marvel.

Next Spidey Should Swing In A Different Direction

As much as Cooper could work, I’d personally rather see the next Spidey be someone a bit more diverse. We have had three major live-action Peter Parkers in Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Holland, and all three brought something different to the role. But the Spider-Verse is much bigger than Peter Parker.

Miles Morales feels like the obvious next step. The animated Spider-Verse movies have already proved audiences love him, and the character has become too important to stay animated forever. A live-action Miles would give Marvel and Sony a chance to expand the franchise without simply rebooting Peter.

There is also Spider-Gwen, or Ghost-Spider, who could bring a very different energy to the big screen. Emma Myers would be a particularly fun choice, and there have even been rumors that she could pop up in Brand New Day. She has the offbeat charm, sharp comedic timing and chaotic sincerity that could make Gwen Stacy feel fresh.

Depending on which Spider-person Marvel eventually chooses, plenty of young stars could fit the bill:

• Emma Myers as Spider-Gwen/Ghost-Spider.
• Iñaki Godoy as Miles Morales.
• Walker Scobell as a future Peter Parker or another Spider-variant.
• Mckenna Grace as a more science-minded Spider-Gwen.
• Owen Cooper, Holland’s own pick.
• Xochitl Gomez (who's already America Chavez in the main MCU) as Spider-Girl or a Spider-Verse wildcard.
• Ariana Greenblatt as Spider-Gwen or Mayday Parker.
• Dallas Liu as a grounded, scrappy Spider-variant.
• Priah Ferguson as a bold Spider-Verse pick.

The point is not that any of these castings need to happen. It is that Spider-Man’s future does not have to be another round of Peter Parker replacement math. The Spider-Verse is big enough for something new.

Brand New Day Still Belongs To Holland

Nobody should start packing Holland’s web-shooters away just yet. He admitted he had been on the fence about making a fourth movie after his original contract ended, but he came back and seems deeply invested in getting this one right. He even talked about listening to podcasts and watching fan videos to understand what audiences wanted from the suit and the story.

That feels fitting given where Brand New Day picks up emotionally. After No Way Home, Peter Parker is alone, erased from the memories of the people he loves and starting over. Holland's fourth solo movie appears to be exploring a more grown-up version of the character.

So, yes, the MCU veteran has a name in mind for the next actor to take on the mantle of Spidey. But, whenever the next person swings in, I hope Marvel thinks beyond another Peter Parker and hands the mask to someone new.

We can’t say for sure if they’re already officially calling each other “husband and wife,” but they certainly were couples goals at a recent Spider-Man: Brand New Day event.

Fans have been swooning over Tom Holland and Zendaya’s relationship for years now — from their comfortable interactions at a tennis tournament to the MCU actor saving his partner from a wardrobe malfunction. So it’s no surprise that as we swoon over how beautiful they looked together at Monday’s press event for the upcoming Spider-Man movie, what we’re really wondering about is that gold band on Zendaya’s ring finger.

Zendaya may be appearing in four movies this year, but even if she wore a prop wedding ring for The Drama, there’s no reason we’d see her at events — especially with Tom Holland — wearing a wedding band that wasn’t her own jewelry.

Not that it really matters. Tom Holland joked that studios love getting him and Zendaya as a “package deal,” but that’s not exclusive to studios. We love the cute (if rare) comments the Challengers star makes about Holland, we love their matching tattoos, we love that they got to bring their dogs to the Spider-Man set, and we love how he is Zendaya’s biggest fan. Hell, I even love that their relationship is so sacred and worth protecting that they don’t share every detail of it with us.

Whether or not they’re legally married isn’t what actually matters, but that’s not going to keep me or anybody else from clocking Zendaya’s ring finger at every press appearance this summer. Hopefully that will be a lot, because I can’t get enough of these two.

Tom Holland Wants To Pay That Forward

That lines up beautifully with Holland’s own recent comments about the future of Spider-Man. In a statement, Holland said that whenever Marvel brings in the next web-slinger, whether that is Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman or someone else, he would love to be part of setting up that next chapter.

His reasoning was simple and very full-circle. In recent viral comments, Holland said that if he could do for another actor what Downey did for him, he would be “so content swinging off into the sunset.”

That is the kind of comment that is both adorable and slightly alarming for fans. On the one hand, it is lovely to hear Holland thinking about mentorship rather than just franchise ownership. On the other hand, whenever an actor in new superhero movies starts talking about sunsets, Marvel fans start bracing for some emotional damage.

But it makes sense. Holland’s first MCU scenes worked partly because Peter Parker felt overwhelmed in the best possible way. He was a kid from Queens, suddenly standing across from Tony Stark/Iron Man, and the nervous energy did not feel fake. Downey could play confidence in his sleep, but he also knew how to make room for Holland’s jittery charm. Their dynamic became the backbone of the MCU’s Spider-Man story, from Homecoming through the heartbreak of Avengers: Endgame.

The Russo Brothers’ comments help explain why that introduction landed so well. Putting a new actor opposite Downey was not just a casting flex. It was a way of giving Holland a scene partner who could set the pace, keep the scene alive and help define the character’s place in the larger MCU.

That matters because Spider-Man was entering a universe that was already crowded with stars, lore and audience expectations. Holland had to feel new without feeling disconnected, and Downey’s presence gave him an immediate anchor. Tony Stark was the MCU’s biggest personality at the time, so if he took Peter seriously, audiences were invited to do the same.

That could mean Miles Morales. It could mean Spider-Gwen. It could mean another Spider-person entirely. Marvel has not laid out those plans yet, but the animated Spider-Verse movies and the television hit Spider-Noir have already proved there is a huge appetite for more than one web-slinger.

For now, Holland is still Peter Parker, and fans are waiting to see what Brand New Day does with him after the lonely ending of No Way Home. But between Holland’s comments and the Russos’ praise for Downey, one thing feels clear: RDJ’s influence on the MCU did not end with Tony Stark’s sacrifice.

And hey, we will get to see RDJ back in the MCU, albeit in a very different kind of mask, when he appears as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday on Dec. 18. Holland’s Spidey has not been confirmed for the movie, but with the Russo brothers back behind the camera, one can only hope for that kind of full-circle reunion.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe consistently puts out new content in theaters and streaming with a Disney+ subscription, certain franchises are fan favorites. The Spider-Man movies are definitely in that category, and Brand New Day is one of the most highly anticipated upcoming Marvel movies coming to theaters. It'll mark Tom Holland's fourth solo movie, although the 30 year-old actor revealed the ironic line he still struggles to say in an American accent.

Fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order saw as Holland's Peter Parker became a wildly popular character, starting with his debut in Captain America: Civil War. While appearing on the podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler, the actor revealed the ironic word he still struggles to say in Peter's accent. In his words:

I mean, how funny is that? Despite how long Holland has been playing Spider-Man, actually uttering his hero's name is still difficult. The Uncharted actor's American accent is really strong, but it sounds like that title is one that continues to be difficult as he films new Marvel projects.

During his conversation with the Parks & Recreation star, Tom Holland went on to share how he accidentally goes into a Southern accent when trying to say the word "Spider-Man". As he shared:

As if we couldn't love Holland any more. While he's an A-list star who is synonymous with his role as Spider-Man, he's still got a good sense of humor about filming those Marvel movies. Fans will have to listen closely to how Holland pronounces his superhero's name when Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31st as part of the 2026 TV schedule. There are countless questions about what the movie will contain, so hopefully we get more footage soon.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a well-oiled machine, but there was a time when various actors were still in the process of auditioning for the shared universe (which is streaming with a Disney+ subscription). Fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order know how Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal have been killing it as Spider-Man and Punisher respectively, but it turns out that the Peter Parker actor actually helped to get the latter into playing Frank Castle.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the next upcoming Marvel movie hitting theaters, and will feature both Holland and Bernthal. Anticipation for the project is high, and in an interview with Empire the Walking Dead alum revealed that Holland actually encouraged him to try and play The Punisher in the Netflix Marvel shows. As he put it:

These two actors met while filming 2017's Pilgrimage, hitting it off despite their 19-year age difference. They happened to both be auditioning for their Marvel roles, and even read for each other during that process. Ultimately both Holland and Bernthal got their roles, although the latter was kept on the small screen until Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Given how amazing and badass Jon Bernthal is as Frank Castle/ The Punisher, it's hard to imagine him not really knowing much about the character ahead of his audition. Luckily Tom Holland, ever the Marvel nerd, helped him catch up and nail the role. The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer showed them finally interacting within the MCU, and fans can't wait to see how Punisher factors into the story. Later in the same interview, he gushed about working with Holland on two different new movies, offering:

Nearly a decade has passed since Pilgrimage was released, and Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland were able to work with each other again on both Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It's a full circle moment, especially the latter thanks to them auditioning for the MCU at the same time. And I can't wait to see how their relationship comes through on the big screen.

The Odyssey will hit theaters on July 17th, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hit theaters on July 31st as part of the 2026 movie release list. Hopefully we see more of Punisher and Spider-Man together in the MCU more in future projects.

While horror has taken over the box office conversation over the last couple of weeks, it’s a big summer for tentpole movies, too. Fans have excitedly been calling it the summer of Tom Holland for a while now, as blockbuster movies like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey and Avengers: Doomsday head straight to theaters. It’s not just the Spidey actor having a big summer, though, I’d argue it’s a Spielberg summer, too.

Disclosure Day Is Coming (And Even The Cast Celebrated With Some Spielberg Classics)

Summer always features at least a few fun tentpole movies, but it’s been a long time since we’ve not only gotten a Spielberg summer movie, but one about aliens to boot. In fact, Spielberg’s last big budget adventure film was probably Ready Player One, which came out in March of 2018, and therefore wasn't even a big summer release. That means the last honest-to-goodness summer Spielberg release we probably got was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull way back in 2008.

Meanwhile, when it comes to Spielberg’s alien movies, it’s been a while, too. Close Encounters of the Third Kind came out way back in 1977. E.T. came out a few years later in 1982. War of the Worlds was 2005, and if we’re getting a little more granular Kingdom of the Crystal Skull also technically counts.

Disclosure Day hits the 2026 movie release schedule this weekend, on June 12, and it’s a pretty big deal. Such a big deal, in fact, that his cast came out and wore iconic tentpole movie shirts when they promoted the new release a few weeks ago. The enthusiasm is palpable, particularly when it comes to all those deer, and there’s another way you can celebrate that’s not even on the big screen.

Universal Orlando Set Up Its Own Spielberg Summer Tribute. It’s Worth Checking Out

If you need more evidence it's the summer of Spielberg, Universal Studios Florida actually has a whole exhibit set up in honor of the famed director. The man has always been a huge part of the Universal theme parks. The Jaws ride was iconic. Sadly, it's gone, but the beloved ride paved the way for the 1975 classic to appear in other parts of the park, including this summer’s Mega Movie Parade. There’s an entire section of Islands of Adventure based on Jurassic Park/World, and the E.T. Adventure has remained one of the park’s classic rides. The Spielberg footprint in the parks is dino-sized.

There’s an entirely new way to celebrate, however, called Spielberg’s Summer Blockbusters. The tribute exhibit has walls covered with cool factoids, original props and costumes, plus some interactive components to really fully immerse you in the Summer of Spielberg. You can see a signed script. You can see some dino eggs. You can even take a photo of yourself and create your own Disclosure Day poster.

Plus, it's included with your Universal Studios Florida ticket price, and is a fun way to cool off and get out of the heat. Last year was a big deal because of the Jaws 50 anniversary, but I'm so excited to see Steven Spielberg back in the summer blockbuster game in 2026, and that's especially true now I know how over-the-top the first reactions have been.
