It’s hard to believe that it's been 20 years since the first High School Musical arrived on Disney Channel and completely changed the world. Before the MCU and Star Wars, one of the biggest franchises Disney had was a teen-focused musical on basic cable. It was the sort of popularity that nobody saw coming, except possibly the director.

Kenny Ortega is one of the great choreographers and directors of musical films. He worked with major stars from Madonna to Elton John and handled choreography on films like Dirty Dancing and Pretty in Pink. He began his relationship with Disney in the early ‘90s directing Newsies and Hocus Pocus, so he was a natural choice when it came to finding somebody to helm High School Musical.

Speaking with People on the occasion of the first film’s anniversary, Ortega says that while filming the movie’s big musical finale in the gym, the song "We’re All in This Together,” he realized that the movie had the potential to be something special. In his words...

Needless to say, Disney marketing did its job, and a juggernaut is exactly what happened. Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens became overnight stars alongside the likes of Ashley Tisdale.

Nearly 8 million people tuned in to watch the original film. It would spawn two sequels and a global concert tour. The second movie would become the most-watched basic cable program in history at the time. This would lead the third film to actually get a theatrical release. The movie was a massive hit in theaters to, and due to its relatively minuscule budget, is arguably one of the more profitable studio films ever made.

High School Musical would also spawn a number of films inspired by its success. We’d get the Camp Rock films, which are set to get a third installment this summer. The modern Descendants and Zombies musicals are carrying on the tradition today that started with this film.

And the High School Musical franchise has never really gone away. Following the launch of Disney+, we got High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, a sort of spinoff/reboot of the franchise that once again created new stars, including Olivia Rodrigo.

I came to the High School Musical movies a little late (and a lot older) than most, but they won me over just the same. They’re incredibly fun movies, and that’s just as true today as it was 20 years ago.

Vanessa Hudgens is now a mother of two! The 36-year-old High School Musical actress just revealed that she had her second baby with her husband, Cole Tucker, but it wasn't without a snafu.

Along with Vanessa Hudgens' sweet update, she also shared a bit of a scary update. Apparently, in the process of giving birth, she somehow popped a blood vessel?? Check out what she posted on her Instagram story:

Pretty sure this is my nightmare. It's apparently not common at all to pop a blood vessel while giving birth, but it can happen due to all the pushing to get the little one out and into the world. Hopefully, she's resting and recovering well following the big day, and it's not causing her too much extra stress or pain postpartum.

Hudgens and Tucker announced they were having a second baby in July, with some adorable photos of the couple and the comment "Round two!!!!" The actress last gave birth in the summer of 2024. Upon the good news, she took to social media to share being "disappointed" that she and her family's privacy was "disrespected and exploited" by paparazzi taking photos of them leaving the hospital without their permission.

Previously, Hudgens called becoming a mother the "hardest, most exhausting" but also "incredibly fulfilling and joyous chapter" of her life.

Vanessa Hudgens and Cole Tucker are getting all the love today. From her High School Musical co-star Monique Coleman, who played Taylor in the trilogy with her, Ashley Tisdale, Zac Efron and more, to other big names like Christina Ricci, Mario Lopez, and another Disney alum, Aly Michalka (of Aly & AJ and Phil of the Future), it's sweet to see all their comments, I'm sure.

Outside of Vanessa Hudgens recently becoming a mother, the celeb co-owns a drink company called Caliwater and actually spent some of her first pregnancy on The Masked Singer (which she won as Goldfish) during Season 11. We know she's filmed a thriller called Quiet Storm, but it doesn't currently have a release date.

However, for now, we hope she's at home resting and healing with her family. Congrats to Vanessa Hudgens and Cole Tucker on their new addition to their family!

It feels like it was just yesterday we were watching the likes of Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and Zendaya sing and dance on our TVs as teen sensations. Then we blinked, and now they are getting engaged, married and having babies! Hudgens became a mother a year ago, and the actress must be digging motherhood, because she just announced her daughter is due to have a younger sibling! I love this news and how two fellow Disney Channel stars threw in their congratulations.

Vanessa Hudgens Is Having Another Baby!

Hudgens and her husband Cole Tucker started their Saturday morning by announcing that they are expecting their second child together. Check out their sweet announcement photos:

The actress simply wrote “Round two!!!!” on Instagram alongside a trio of photos of the couple in white standing happily outside with Hudgens’ pregnant belly showing. Their first baby should be around one year old right now, and now they can look forward to having two little bundles of joy at once. When she celebrated her first Mother’s Day a couple of months ago, she had this to say about becoming a parent:

Hudgens and Tucker have kept parent life rather private otherwise. We don’t know how far along Hudgens is, the gender of her baby or even the name of her firstborn, which she announced in March 2024. No matter what, they absolutely deserve their privacy, and we’re so excited for their continued journey as parents.

How sweet is this? Both Disney Channel actors are actually mothers themselves, and sound super happy for Vanessa Hudgens. Song has been with Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin for the past eight years, and they have two sons together, a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old. Aly Michalka, who is also in the band Aly & Aj and was with her sister in Cow Belles, just welcomed her first child last April.

Anyone else getting emotional over the fact that so many of the Disney Channel stars we grew up with are raising the next generation already! Selena Gomez (who Hudgens worked on Spring Breakers with) also just got engaged late last year, and Lizzie McGuire’s Hilary Duff straight up has a 13-year-old, among her four total kids.

Today, Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron have impressive careers to stand on outside of what put them on the map. However, I'm consistently thinking about their High School Musical days. So, when a special throwback comes up that includes the actors behind Tory and Gabriella, the Disney Channel kid in me can’t help but celebrate. So, that's exactly what I'm doing after seeing Hudgens' latest Instagram story.

The new mom shared a clip of her song "Say OK" on her Instagram stories, and it includes the Baywatch actor. While the only comment on the story refers to the now dated hairstyle, the two of them are featured prominently in the footage. The fun heart-fluttering flashback originally came from velvetcoke’s IG post that featured many other top pop girls of the time. However, Hudgens intentionally sharing her video with Efron is too good, take a look at the story below:

Yes, the side-bang is very of the time, and sadly, this relationship is too. However, it's impossible not to look back on it all fondly. I must admit, growing up watching Hudgens and Efron on screen and in real life was a major pop culture moment for me and likely anyone who grew up with Disney Channel, and it's so nostalgic to see it now.

Honestly, Hudgens' post about this video of her and Efron in 2007 makes me think of all the fun they must have had on the still watchable High School Musical movies alongside the rest of the cast.

The movies, which can still be watched with a Disney+ subscription, truly catapulted both of the actors into the start of their careers, and their real-life romance was the talk of the town. However, in the years since they broke up, they don't really say anything about or do anything with each other. Regardless, their run together remains a pillar of Disney Channel kid pop culture royalty to me and many others.

Now that it’s been about 15 years since their breakup, we’ve seen both go on to many exciting endeavors.

For Efron, he’s been a pretty regular face on the big screen for years now. Last year, he had lead roles in Ricky Stanicky and A Family Affair, and the year before, he garnered critical acclaim for The Iron Claw. This year, he popped up on the 2025 TV schedule thanks to his guest role in The Studio.

Meanwhile, Hudgens welcomed her first baby with husband Cole Tucker last year (although they weren’t happy with paparazzi at the hospital). In addition to becoming a family of three, the actress and singer will start working on The Black Kaiser, which is based on a Dark Horse graphic novel entitled “Polar” by Victor Santos.

Overall, I love all of this for them, and I can't wait to see what they do next. However, while it’s been a long while since my Disney Channel days, that kid in me will always perk up when one of them mentions their truly iconic run together in the 2000s and 2010s.

After Selena Gomez wrapped four seasons of Wizards of Waverly Place, the Disney Channel star memorably did the unexpected by starring in Harmony Korine’s R-rated romp and one of the first A24 movies, Spring Breakers alongside High School Musical actress Vanessa Hudgens. It was quite the pivot for both actresses, to say the least. Gomez, who was still quite young when filming the movie, recently recalled an exchange she had with Hudgens while making the film and now chalks it up to her "naive" nature at the time.

In the movie itself, Gomez plays Faith, the most pure amongst a group of college students. The character spends much of her after hours at a religious youth group while her friends indulge in drugs and hedonism. When Gomez discussed her career with THR, she remembered her mother encouraging her to work with Korine. She herself also told the filmmaker she really wanted “to do a cool project.” While she’s thankful for the experience in Spring Breakers, she looks back on it knowing she was perhaps ignorant in some respects. As she also said when asked if the decision sent shockwaves among her reps and Disney fans:

Vanessa Hudgens is four years older than Selena Gomez and, years ago, she'd been a few years removed from her Disney Channel days when she also signed on for Spring Breakers. Surely, both actresses wanted the same thing out of the project – to be seen as more than the stars of a House of Mouse property. Yet, as the Monte Carlo alum shared, she didn’t fully wrap her head around how the movie would reach her young fans, too. That is understandable, as ignorance does come with youth, right?

More recently, Selena Gomez referred to her turn in the film as a “crazy detour” for her career. It was from that experience that she realized she liked “filmmakers and really gritty, fun stuff that was a little too graphic.” That being said, that doesn’t mean Disney Channel wasn’t the right path for her either. As she continued:

Being a Disney Channel star has created some roadblocks for Selena Gomez to have the kind of career she wants over the years, particularly because she is so famous. As she’s said before, she has gone to auditions without using her real name in the hopes that casting directors will see her for her talent before writing her off.

In recent years, between becoming a billionaire, the 32-year-old actress and mogul has been able to really establish herself further as an actress who can do a number of projects, from The Only Murders In The Building and her upcoming role in the Linda Ronstadt biopic. All the while, she also went back to her Disney roots for the Wizards of Waverly Place revival. It's fair to say that she's seamlessly merged her sensibilities for roles and is now far from the "naive" young performer she believes she once was.

Becoming famous will often lead to a certain amount of privacy being lost. Paparazzi taking pictures of celebrities who are just trying to live their lives is something we see all the time. That’s to be expected and something that the celebrity has often accepted. Unfortunately, the children of celebrities didn’t sign up for the same exposure, yet they often have to deal with it. Vanessa Hudgens, who announced her pregnancy in March, just gave birth. And she’s already expressing her frustration with the paparazzi after images of the child were snapped without her permission.

Pictures of Vanessa Hudgens leaving the hospital with her new baby have already made their way online thanks to a photographer who took photos of the new family from a distance. Hudgens posted a message on Instagram expressing her frustration with the situation, saying…

One can imagine the shock that comes with seeing pictures of yourself online that you didn’t know had been taken. That’s something many celebrities have to deal with, but when those pictures are of you walking out of a hospital with a new baby, the invasion of privacy must feel particularly acute. 

The first photo of a celebrity baby can often be a very valuable thing, leading to situations like this where some photographers go to extreme lengths to get the shot. Some celebrities have been known to publish such photos themselves specifically to prevent paparazzi from cashing in on their family in this way.

George Clooney once asked a publication in writing not to take pictures of his kids because they have not agreed to be in the public eye the way he has. Billie Lourd has also had to deal with paparazzi shots of her child. Lourd posts pictures of her family herself but never shows the face of her child. 

Many celebrities do what they can to keep their children out of the public eye. The first picture that Suki Waterhouse posted of her child with Robert Pattinson didn’t actually show the child’s face. Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger's children have never had their faces shown despite many family photos still making it to social media.

While it’s certainly frustrating for Vanessa Hudgens to have somebody taking pictures of her baby without her permission, now that it’s been done, hopefully, that means the new family will be left alone. The fact that everybody is healthy is the only real news that anybody needs. If the parents want to show people their baby, they’ll decide how and when to do so, and if they don’t that’s fine too. It isn’t anybody else’s business. 

Accents are incredibly difficult and to be clear, this isn't knocking any of the people on this list's acting talents. Some of the best actors in the world often struggle with accents. In fact, everyone on this list should be praised for taking the risk and even attempting one. That said, this is still a list of actors with bad accents in a role. 

Dick Van Dyke – Mary Poppins

Quite possibly the most notorious of an actor messing up an accent is Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. The Midwest native's take on a London Cockney accent is... rough. The rest of his performance is legendary, of course, but boy, it's rough to hear him talk sometimes. 

Keanu Reeves – Bram Stoker's Dracula

Keanu Reeves is an icon, but let's be real, some of his acting performances in the past haven't been the best. The most glaring example is his performance in Bram Stoker's Dracula. It's a stilled example of an English accent that comes across as really unconfident. He's much better in the John Wick movies, to say the least. 

Don Cheadle – Ocean's Eleven

Don Cheadle is one of the best actors in Hollywood and is proof that even the best get it wrong sometimes. His cockney accent in Ocean's Eleven is brutal. In a way, it can be excused, as everyone in the movie is just chewing the scenery the whole time, but still, you expect more. Especially because we've all seen him do amazing accents like in Hotel Rwanda, a movie so good you never want to see it again. 

Daniel Craig - Knives Out

This one might get some pushback from fans – and I am a huge fan of Daniel Craig and Knives Out – but the accent is distracting. Cajun accents are tough, so for even attempting it, Craig gets credit, but he's been much better at other accents, like his straight southern accent in Lucky Logan. 

Kevin Costner – Thirteen Days

Thirteen Days is one of the best movies about the Cold War we've ever seen, but Kevin Costner's Boston accent isn't what makes it great. Costner's performance outshines the accent, but it's still pretty distracting, as it's way off. Boston accents are hard to do, so we'll forgive him. 

Tom Cruise – Far And Away

Another one of the most notorious accents in Hollywood history is Tom Cruise's attempt at an Irish accent in Far And Away. The movie itself is a lot better than its reputation would have you believe, but Cruise, one of the biggest movie stars of the last few decades, has a rough go of it. He's not alone in that, either. 

John Malkovich – Rounders

John Malkovich's career is filled with amazing, and often over-the-top performances. Maybe his most over-the-top is that of the Russian "KGB" in Rounders. His accent is presumably supposed to be Russian, but wow, who knows what it really is? It's wild, that's for sure. He even joked to co-star Matt Damon that he is a "terrible actor," which, of course, is false, even here. 

Brad Pitt – Meet Joe Black

This one is on the list because it's a popular choice as one of the worst ever, but I'm here to defend it...sort of. His Cajun patois is not great, that's true, but, for one, that's a really hard accent to nail, and some have defended it. It also could be argued that it fits his character to not quite understand how to speak normally, as he talks about in other parts of the film. Pitt gets a pass here. 

Mickey Rooney – Breakfast At Tiffany's

In one of the most indefensible roles in the history of Hollywood, Mickey Rooney's bad accent is actually the least offensive part. You can argue about 1961 being a different time, but it wasn't that different, and having Rooney play an offensive caricature of a Japanese man was called out even at the time for how offensive it was. 

Julia Roberts – Michael Collins

The beloved Julia Roberts has been in some of the best movies of the last 30 years. Michael Collins isn't a bad movie, but it's also not among Roberts' best films. While she can usually be counted on for great performances, her Irish accent here misses the mark. 

Anne Hathaway – One Day

Anne Hathaway is an Oscar winner for good reason. She's consistently great in her movies, and in roles that range from rom-coms to comic supervillains. In One Day, she adopts a British accent...sort of. It's not bad when she nails it, but it's wildly inconsistent. 

Brad Pitt - Seven Years in Tibet

Seven Years In Tibet is an underrated movie in my opinion. In all honesty, I don't know if Brad Pitt's accent is truly bad, or if it's just really annoying. I tend to think it's a combo of both. Her performance otherwise is great, and the movie's visuals are stunning, making it well worth suffering through the iffy accent. 

Jack Nicholson – The Departed

This is one that might get some pushback, but I think Jack Nicholson's Boston accent in The Departed is terrible. Given all the great accents in the movie, some by Boston natives, some not, this one really sticks out as not being all that great. Nicholson is awesome as the menacing Frank Costello, but he should have just played it straight. 

Angelina Jolie – Alexander

Okay, what in the ancient world is going on here? Angelina Jolie's accent in Alexander is just wild. It's sort of Greek, sure, but we're not even sure what the ancient Greeks sounded like, so why even go here with this acting choice? Jolie is a wonderful actor and director, but this is not her finest moment. 

Emma Watson – The Bling Ring

Emma Watson's biggest accent sin in The Bling Ring is how inconsistent it is. Maybe the hardest part for an actor is staying consistent, but this one still needs to be highlighted here. A Valley Girl, Watson is not. 

Ewan McGregor – Black Hawk Down

Black Hawk Down has an amazing cast, many of whom are not American, all playing American servicemen. To be honest, all the accents in the movie, from Orlando Bloom, Tom Hardy, and others are a little dicey. It probably isn't fair to only call out Ewan McGregor, but it's not his finest work, either. 

Kevin Costner – Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

What can be said here? It's the bad accent that beats them all. Kevin Costner's accent (or sometimes lack of) in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves has been knocked ad nauseam over the years and there isn't much more to say about it. It's not just poor, it's not even there sometimes. 

Cameron Diaz – Gangs Of New York

Let's be clear, Cameron Diaz is not alone with her poor accent in Gangs of New York. Leonardo DiCaprio isn't at his best, either. It's maybe a little more striking in Diaz's case though. It's hard though, when you are going up with Daniel Day-Lewis, who probably spent months and months perfecting his American accent for the role.  

Blake Lively – The Town

If you're not from Boston, it had be a deceptively difficult accent to master. It's not as simple as dropping the Rs, though that is hard to do consistently also. It's also the long vowels and other more nuanced parts of the accent that make it very tricky. Blake Lively is great in The Town, but her accent leaves a lot to be desired. 

Vanessa Hudgens – The Princess Switch

In one of the weirder choices on this list, Vanessa Hudgens decided to go with what is ostensively a British accent in The Princess Switch when she easily could have just gone with her regular accent. Sure, she needed to differentiate herself from...herself as she was also playing the other role in the movie in this Parent Trap-like movie, but still, she was a princess of a fictional country, the accent could have been anything 

Scarlett Johansson – Don Jon

Scarlett Johansson is from New York, and is an excellent actor. That's why it's such a surprise that she missed with a New Jersey accent in Don Jon. Once again, it's an example of a great performance losing a point or two because of the dodgy accent.

Jared Leto – House Of Gucci

Most of the actors in House Of Gucci struggle a little with the Italian accents. Jared Leto, however, sounds like a cartoon character. It's more like Mario than Paolo Gucci. I give him props for trying, heck I give them all props for trying, but it just doesn't work. 

Mel Gibson – Braveheart

I have a lot of problems with Braveheart. The history is notoriously poor, and the acting by Mel Gibson is so over the top, that it's comical, hence all the memes, right? Often lost in that is how sketchy Gibson's Scottish accent is in the movie. 

Quentin Tarantino – Django Unchained

Quentin Tarantino is arguably the best director of the last 30 years with nine (or ten, depending on how you count Kill Bill) great movies out of nine directed. Django Unchained is no exception, but you can't excuse the Australian accent Tarantino tries to pull off in his acting role in the movie. It's not good - and it's not like he's a bad actor, either. 

Harrison Ford - K-19: The Widowmaker

With all due respect to the Gods of the 1970s and '80s, I don't want to besmirch the great Harrison Ford. Sadly, I have to for his messy attempt at a Russian accent in K-19: The Widowmaker. We all love Ford's gruff voice, but it's better when he sticks with his natural accent. 

Nicole Kidman – Far And Away

Tom Cruise gets a lot of gruff for his Irish accent in Far and Away, but that shouldn't distract from Nicole Kidman's sketchy work. The Aussie struggles as much as the American in the film. 

Alan Rickman - The Butler

Alan Rickman, who is one of my favorite actors ever and responsible for some amazing performances, has one of his most uneven in The Butler as President Ronald Reagan. It's not just the accent, though that is part of it. He speaks weirdly softly and it feels like a shallow performance, which was unlike Rickman, most of the time.  

Michael Caine - On Deadly Ground

The great Michael Caine has but one accent – the Michael Caine Accent. It's so iconic, that it's as imitated as Christopher Walken's. When he gets away from it, it gets a little bizarre, as it does in On Deadly Ground. Now, the semi-retired Caine is co-starring in a Steven Seagal movie, so you can't blame him for really going over the top, even if he misses. 

Brad Pitt – The Devil's Own

In The Devil's Own, Brad Pitt makes a go at an Irish accent. I'll always applaud Pitt for going for tougher roles, but he really does struggle with accents, and here is no exception. It is distracting, but I appreciate that he goes for it. 

Jennifer Lawrence – Red Sparrow

As the winner of one Oscar and owner of three more nominations, Jennifer Lawrence is clearly one of the best actresses so far in the 21st Century. Red Sparrow is not her best work though. The movie is surprisingly boring, and her Russian accent, while far from the worst here, is in and out throughout the whole film. 

Ana De Armas – Blonde

Make no mistake, Ana De Armas made a bold decision to play not only an American actress but one whose voice is very familiar to movie fans everywhere, Marilyn Monroe. Blonde was a challenging choice for the Cuban actress and for that she should be celebrated, but when the brass tacks were down, her accent was not the best part of her performance. 

Charlie Hunnam – Green Street Hooligans

If you want to understand how hard accents can be, look no further than Englishman Charlie Hunnam's attempt at a cockney accent in Green Street Hooligans. While Hunnam is English, he's from Newcastle, not East London, and boy does it show. Hunnam was decent doing an American accent in Sons of Anarchy, but he doesn't kill the cockney accent here, in fact, he's so inconsistent it's distracting in an otherwise super fun cult classic.

The Masked Singer Season 11 has come to an end, and what a treat the finale was. The Goldfish and Gumball went head to head, and of course, only one could win. The fish came out on top, and after seeing Gumball unmasked and revealed as actor Scott Porter, Goldfish was unmasked and revealed to be actress Vanessa Hudgens. 

CinemaBlend had a chance to speak to Hudgens, who has had a busy start to 2024 between a beach wedding at the close of last year and her pregnancy announcement. I asked the Bad Boys: Ride or Die actress about her feelings before the winner was announced and if she felt victory was a sure thing or had doubts. The actress admitted that she wasn't thinking of either because she didn't get into The Masked Singer to compete: 

Hudgens joined The Masked Singer for the fans, so hopefully, they were watching The Goldfish's jaw-dropping performances. Her singing was a bright point of a season in which the talent was lacking, which had me worried that Season 11 had a major problem. Fortunately, contestants improved as the season went on, and I'd argue this finale was one of the best based on singing. 

So if Vanessa Hudgens wasn't in it to compete, and I can't imagine the small pay to do The Masked Singer was appetizing, so was there any positive to doing the show? The actress confirmed her feelings about playing The Goldfish, and what it meant to be seen as a fish and not the actress who used to be in High School Musical: 

I can certainly understand the appeal of the freedom to sing anonymously and not be judged based on who people may think you are or what you're about. Corey Feldman expressed the same feeling to CinemaBlend, stating that he felt the comments about his performances were kinder than the ones he'd generally receive when the audience knew who he was. 

Overall, Goldfish's win made for a satisfying ending to The Masked Singer Season 11, which did have some other high points outside of singing. Perhaps the biggest plus was adding Rita Ora to the panel in Nicole Scherzinger's absence, and I'd love to see her return in the future. We'll have to wait and see whether or not that will happen, as Scherzinger's status for Season 12 remains unconfirmed.

Fans learned of the fun friend date when Sarah Hyland posted an Instagram carousel of pictures showing off how much fun she was having with Vanessa Hudgens and the rest of the group. They took photos in front of the iconic Sleeping Beauty’s Castle and a fun shot in the evolving Mickey's ToonTown. However, it was Hudgens’ shoe choice that had fans in the comments going wild, as they wondered if it was a reference to one of the best Modern Family episodes. Take a look:

In almost all of the eight photos shared by the actress, the High School Musical star, who had a beach wedding last year, can be seen wearing Minnie Mouse-themed slippers that are sold in the park. Fans were so distracted by the interesting choice of footwear, that they didn’t even comment on how much fun the ladies seemed to be having. More specifically, they were pointing out the potential nod to the episode of the long-running ABC comedy titled "Disneyland," in which its fan-favorite family heads to the eponymous resort. During Season 3, the entire family heads to the Disneyland Resort for a day of bonding. Never one to be without heels, Gloria (Sofia Vergara) decides to wear her trademark stilettos to the park despite Jay (Ed O'Neill) trying to talk her out of it. 

As the day progresses, Gloria's feet start to hurt, but she's too stubborn to admit her mistake to Jay. The Academy Awards are upon us, which means all eyes will be on the many talented stars frequenting the Dolby Theatre this evening. Fan-favorite actress Vanessa Hudgens is already on tap to serve as co-host for ABC’s pre-show. And she’s already kicked off the evening with a massive surprise. Hudgens revealed that she’s pregnant with her first child, who she’s expecting with husband Cole Tucker. It’s a sweet piece of news, and the Internet is already loving this for her.

Various news outlets captured footage of the Bad Boys for Life cast member as she made her way down the red carpet. The 35-year-old actress wore a beautiful black gown and showed off her baby bump while in front of photographers. E! This is wonderful news, and I’m so happy for the star and her hubby. It was probably inevitable that fans would have plenty to say about the big news, and many did indeed flood X with reactions once they learned of it. In fact, the exciting recent events that have taken place in the power couple’s professional lives draw a striking comparison to a Troy and Gabriella plot in High School Musical, and Swifties aren’t the only ones who can see it. The similarities were pointed out to Zac Efron, and he shared his opinion on his character’s story seemingly come to life. 

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift have had a banner year so far in 2024, and February was particularly eventful, with the Grammy Awards, four concerts in Japan and the Super Bowl all taking place within one week. High School Musical fans immediately thought of Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) having a basketball game, academic decathlon and the high school musical on the same day. When Zac Efron, who played Troy on HSM, realized this, he told E! News: 

Swifties also likened the way that Gabriella supported Troy at basketball games to the way Taylor Swift cheered Travis Kelce on during the NFL season that ended a month ago with Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs winning the Super Bowl. Vanessa Hudgens also reacted to the comparisons, agreeing with fans that the similarities were “hilarious.”

While the High School Musical connection might increase the HSM alums’ emotional investment in the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce phenomenon, it turns out Zac Efron was already a big fan of his The Lorax co-star and her NFL boyfriend getting together. He said:

As Vanessa Hudgens celebrates turning 35 this week, the High School Musical star has a lot to be grateful for. For one, the actress just got married a couple of weeks ago to her partner of three years, Cole Tucker, in Tulum, Mexico. Hyland was previously part of Vanessa Hudgens’ spooky bachelorette party, which took Hudgens and her friends, including Shipp and Marcell, along with her sister Stella Hudgens and other gal pals, to Aspen, Colorado to celebrate the coming eternal death of her singledom. When Hyland got married to Well Adams in 2022, Hudgens was also featured in her wedding as a bridesmaid. 

Hudgens and Tucker met in a Zoom meditation group led by Jay Shetty in October 2020 before getting engaged by the Eiffel Tower in Paris in February 2023. The pair got married at the Azulik City of Arts in Tulum, Mexico on December 2. As she told Vogue, she flew out to the venue amidst filming the forthcoming Bad Boys 4 with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, which is set to be among upcoming 2024 movies. 

While the actress was initially worried about having her wedding “45 minutes into the jungle” after finding the venue, when she visited the location, she knew it was where she wanted to get married. Cyrus isn't new to adding a little naughtiness to the holiday season: back in 2020, she posed in a variety of saucy, topless Santa outfits that she posted them to her social media pages, and two years prior, she tested NBC censors with a revealing outfit during a Christmas-themed episode of Saturday Night Live. 

However, if you were wondering if Miley would be back on NBC this year for another edition of her star-studded Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party—which aired on the network in 2022 and 2023 with performances by the likes of Sia, Dolly Parton, Paris Hilton and Miley's younger sis Noah Cyrus—you will sadly be disappointed. So far, the holiday special isn't on the 2024 TV schedule for this season's New Year's celebrations.

She’s been dating Major League Baseball shortstop Cole Tucker for the past couple of years and just got engaged. But have the two tied the knot already? Rumors are circulating that the High School Musical star and her fiancé have gotten hitched after she was spotted wearing a gorgeous white dress on the beach.

When Vanessa Hudgens spoke on The Drew Barrymore Show about her engagement, she expressed that finding a venue was challenging for her and that she wished to just elope. However, did they go through with any elopement? People reported that a fan posted a photo on X of the actress/singer posing on the beach wearing a stunning white dress that could pass as a wedding dress. Her High School Musical co-star Monique Coleman also posted on her Instagram story footage of a tropical setting in Tulum, Mexico where the exchange of “I Dos” was believed to have happened. Coleman wrote in her caption, “Last morning in paradise.” As Hudgens’ rep hasn’t commented yet, I have a strong urge for some answers.

The Gimme Shelter star has had her love life public throughout her career. When it comes to beloved Disney Channel properties, High School Musical is arguably the crowned jewel. The trilogy of musical films not only major boosted the acting careers of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, they also had record-breaking premiere numbers on TV and remain popular source material for stage musicals. It’s a modern classic, so when news of a reunion of the original stars was revealed for the fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, fans of the original movies, like me, have been curious about whether it would stick the landing with this reunion. Now that the season has dropped, let’s talk about what went down for the Wildcats of the early ‘00s.

Ahead of the season dropping on Disney+, CinemaBlend spoke to the series’ creator, Tim Federle, and he hinted at the reunion of the original cast members being “more of grace note” rather than the focus on the final season as it seeks to wrap up the current Wildcats’ journeys putting on a stage production of High School Musical 3 amidst their upcoming graduations. Even so, there are some mentions and participation from the original High School Musical actors. What time is it? Time to break it down:  

What Is The High School Musical 4: The Reunion In HSMTMTS?

First off, here’s how HSMTMTS sets up this High School Musical reunion. The season starts with East High becoming the setting of Disney’s High School Musical 4: The Reunion and the current Wildcats being recruited as extras as the production is being filmed. It puts somewhat of a wrench in their plans to put on a production of High School Musical 3 ahead of many of the theatre club’s graduations. 

In Season 3, some of the current Wildcats met Corbin Bleu while at Camp Shallow Lake as he became the host of a documentary series taking place on the grounds following their production of Frozen. He played a heightened version of himself, and as he told CinemaBlend last year, he enjoyed playing “a bit of an ass” for the season. In Season 4, Corbin Bleu comes to East High to reprise his role as Chad, but he’s not the only original actor to return to his Disney Channel roots. 

Who Returns To East High For High School Musical 4?

Now that I’ve seen Season 4 of HSMTMTS in full, let’s talk about the original cast that came back and how the series handled their return. Sadly, not all the Wildcats came together. 

Corbin Bleu: As already mentioned, Corbin Bleu returned to Season 4 after previously guesting in Season 3. He’s barely in the season, but we do get to see Bleu and Monique Coleman together! 

Monique Coleman: The actress who played Taylor in all three High School Musical movies returns to play herself and Taylor for High School Musical 4: The Reunion. We learn that Taylor is the new principal of East High and is married to Chad in the fake movie. She also gives Courtney a sweet pep talk during the season finale as the high schooler wrestles with which university to go to. 

Lucas Grabeel: After the actor behind Ryan briefly returned to East High for a dream sequence musical number in Season 1, Lucas Grabeel additionally returned for Season 4 as himself and Ryan. Grabeel has a small role in the season as well, but one major revelation that occurs is confirmation that Ryan is gay, with a scene that has him kissing his partner and learning that they are expecting twins. The revelation is especially sweet considering Ryan and Sharpay were twins too. 

Kaycee Stroh: Kaycee Stroh, who played the role of Martha throughout the High School Musical movies, also returned to the halls of East High as herself and Martha for the fake fourth High School Musical movie. Stroh also has a small role in the season, but we learn that Martha is a “world-class” choreographer in the movie after memorably declaring “hip-hop is my passion!” during the "Stick To The Status Quo" number. 

Alyson Reed: High School Musical’s drama teacher Ms. Darbus also finds her way into the show’s High School Musical sequel. In one major scene for the character, Ms. Darbus announces her retirement, but like the other original actors, she gets very little screen time. 

Who Doesn’t Return, And Why

Now part of me thought that HSMTMTS was hiding a big surprise and not letting fans know of a surprise massive reunion between the entire cast, but that was not in the cards after all. Here’s who was notably missing and what we know about why they didn’t return. 

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens: Early in the final season, HSMTMTS does share a quick mention of the franchise’s star characters, sharing that Troy and Gabriella would be in couple’s therapy in the fourth movie. While many fans thought it was a clue when both Hudgens and Efron posed in front of East High late last year on separate occasions, it was simply coincidence. When speaking to EW about why Efron and Hudgens are not in the series, he said it was “definitely discussed” but Efron “has 20 movies going” and Hudgens is “super busy and so gracious.” 

Ashley Tisdale: Although Sharpay’s brother makes a brief appearance in the fourth season, Sharpay’s place in a fourth movie isn’t even mentioned. Federle did tell People that he believes the character is “now a full CEO” and a “Goop competitor,” along with saying she probably “consulted on Barbie and coached Margot Robbie” through her character. When it comes to why Tisdale couldn’t return, he shared that Tisdale is a new mom who is launching a very successful line of products and her own show on CBS. 

So a full reunion on HSMTMTS was not to be, but we at least appreciate the nostalgic cameos! The season ended up being very much about the new generation of cast members who have been the focus of the show all along. Perhaps in the future, the full cast can return for a full-fledged High School Musical 4 where they really get to explore where their characters are all these years later and sing some new songs together. For now, it was a sweet farewell to HSMTMTS! 

Mild High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 4 SPOILERS ahead. 

Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series has always found a way to balance the story of a new generation of theatre-loving Wildcats with the nostalgia of the original Disney Channel movies. In the final season of one of the best Disney+ original shows, this is kicked up a notch as more of the original cast is in play this time around as High School Musical 4 is in production at East High. However, after CinemaBlend talked to the series’ creator, one should manage their expectations on the High School Musical reunion front. 

As it was previously announced in the fall, a High School Musical original cast reunion is occurring in Season 4 of HSMTMTS notably with Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman and Lucas Grabeel from the core six returning to East High to play themselves as actors returning for High School Musical 4. Early in the season, there’s mention of what’s going on with Troy and Gabriella, but when I asked series creator Tim Federle if Sharpay will get her moment, or some explanation of her absence, he had this to say: 

There you have it. The final season isn’t as much about the original cast coming together as it is a final encore and send-off for the high schoolers audiences have been following for the past few years. Federle teased the use of the original actors as more of a “grace note” than anything else, so if you’re tuning in for the OG Wildcats alone, be warned, it doesn’t shuffle ball change into any massive reunion with the original actors. 

That being said, as a longtime fan of the original franchise and fan of this new series, it’s fun to see some of the original cast roam around and interact with the new Wildcats without the focus completely turning to them. Plus, during our conversation, Federle spoke to how the original cast who does return contributed to the storylines of playing themselves on screen and reprising their characters all at once. In his words: 

We can’t wait to see how the series handles the reunion and how it says goodbye to the current Wildcats! This is especially true when it comes to Lucas Grabeel, who has already been confirmed to be canonically gay, per a previously released clip of the upcoming season.

As one of the final movies to open before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down theaters for nearly a year, Bad Boys for Life made quite the box office splash in early 2020, making over $426 million worldwide off a reported $90 million budget. With a performance like that, it’s no wonder Sony greenlit Bad Boys 4, which will begin production in the coming months. Ahead of that, it’s been revealed that Bad Boys for Life alum Vanessa Hudgens will re-team with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence for this next installment.

Vanessa Hudgens starred in Bad Boys for Life as Kelly, the weapons expert for the Advanced Miami Metro Operations (A.M.M.O.), the team that Joe Panttoliano’s Captain Howard had working with Will Smith’s Mike Lowery and Martin Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett. Now Deadline reports Hudgens will be back in action for Bad Boys 4, making her the first actor to be confirmed besides the two leads. Alas, with plot details being kept under wraps, we have no idea yet the circumstances in which Mike and Marcus will reunite with Kelly, other than safely assuming it’ll revolve around taking down some bad guys.

Bad Boys 4 is now one of four movies that Vanessa Hudgens on the way, with the next one, a documentary that she co-executive produced called Dead Hot: Season of the Witch, arriving sometime later this year. Joining Bad Boys 4 as undated feature films are fellow Sony release Downtown Owl, which has already been shot, and French Girl, which began production last November. Hudgens also has a voice role in the upcoming animated series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, which Netflix subscribers will eventually be able to watch alongside Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves.

Speaking of Netflix, much of Vanessa Hudgens’ film appearances over the last several years hail from the streaming platform. In addition to leading the three Princess Switch movies, she also starred in Polar, The Knight Before Christmas and Tick, Tick… Boom!, the later of which Hudgens was proud of adapting with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Andrew Garfield. Hudgens’ notable projects from earlier in her career include the High School Musical movies (duh), Sucker Punch, Spring Breakers, Grease Live! and the short-lived Powerless.

Behind the scenes, Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will reprise their helming duties for Bad Boys 4, making this their first movie since working on Batgirl, which was scrapped last August. The duo also executive produced and directed two episodes of the Marvel show Ms. Marvel, which can be streamed with a Disney+ subscription. Chris Bremner, who co-wrote Bad Boys for Life with Peter Craig and Joe Carnahan, has returned to pen Bad Boys 4.

Bad Boys 4 hasn’t been slotted on the theatrical calendar, but once that information comes in, along with any other major updates on its progress, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, get acquainted with the 2023 new movie releases left to come out this year.

When the first trailer of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis came out, it had us all shocked, not only did Austin Butler sway those hips just like The King, he also perfectly portrayed Elvis’ voice. However, now it seems that Elvis’ voice never escaped the Golden Globe-winning actor. As the brouhaha of Austin Butler’s Elvis voice keeps going on, his ex-girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens tuned in with a spicy comment that caused mixed reactions from the internet.

Austin Butler went to great lengths to become The King including not seeing his family for years, seeing every piece of Elvis footage he could find on YouTube, and even falling asleep listening to Elvis’ voice. It would appear that in all of his time studying the King of Rock and Roll, it’s as if he developed a connection to him. On Instagram, commentsbycelebs posted a screenshot of a Page Six article with Butler’s voice coach defending his voice and saying it’s “genuine” and might remain “forever.” After Instagram user Ryan Scott joked that Butler “went to the Lady Gaga school of Oscar campaign acting,” Hudgens commented “crying.” Take a look at this spicy post below:

Normally when someone comments “crying,” that’s an embellishment of saying they’re laughing in tears. That Lady Gaga comment Scott made was in reference to when the House of Gucci star admitted she was stuck in that fake Italian accent for a year and a half of filming and then nine months after. When you spend a long time portraying another person’s voice or movements, it can be hard to shake that off once the cameras stop rolling. Instagram users don’t know what to make of Vanessa Hudgens’ comment with one user giving their theory on the actress’s particular comment.

Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler were together for over eight years. They met in 2011 at fellow High School Musical cast member Ashley Tisdale’s sister’s birthday party. In a 2019 appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan, the Tick, Tick…Boom! actress said after hearing Butler singing along to an Elvis Presley Christmas song in the car, she told him he should play Elvis at some point in his career. And then, wouldn’t you know it? The Nickelodeon star got a call from his agent about Baz Luhrmann’s movie. So during their time together before their breakup in 2019, she probably got a glimpse of his transformation.

This user wouldn’t be the only one confused about why people are talking about this post. Are people interpreting this post that Vanessa Hudgens is throwing shade at her ex-boyfriend for laughing at the Lady Gaga joke? It doesn’t seem like there’s any reason to believe there’s bad blood between them. Austin Butler has moved on, and has been with model Kaia Gerber since late 2021, while Hudgens has been with MLB star Cole Tucker since 2020. It could just be her simply finding that joke funny without it meaning anything major. An additional comment said the Bandslam actress is clearly on the outside looking in on the situation. 

We’ve all been watching as Austin Butler’s voice has evolved since filming for Elvis started. If you’ve watched videos of Butler as a teenager when he was on Nickelodeon and Disney guest spots, his voice was very baritone but it was no Elvis. Fans have been concerned about this actor keeping his new voice for years. In interviews, hosting SNL, and evening winning Best Actor in a Drama at the 2023 Golden Globes, Butler has kept that southern drawl of Elvis despite the fact that he is from California. Another Instagram reply came up with a rather hilarious observation about the former child star’s new voice.

Austin Butler played James, the boyfriend of Jamie Lynn Spears’ Zoey, in Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101 for the final season. With announcements of the Nickelodeon show getting a sequel movie coming to Paramount+, Butler’s name was not mentioned in the cast announcement. So, it’s safe to assume that this potential Oscar contender will not be a part of the new movie. Probably for the best, because if he were in it, James might have to say after he and Zoey broke up he developed an Elvis accent that never went away. One more popular comment had this user defending the 31-year-old about him sounding the way he feels best.

Vanessa Hudgens’ spicy comment may have hit the internet in different ways, but I don’t believe there’s anything to worry about. She may be aware of her ex-boyfriend’s vocal changes, but she has a life of her own now and so does he. I’d like to believe she’s proud of what he’s accomplished recently with no hard feelings. If you grew up in the early 2000s, like me, High School Musical was a formative film, and Zac Efron was likely one of your first celebrity crushes. The 2006 Disney Channel musical along with HSM 2 and 3 sent its stars to a new level of fame, and everyone was pining over Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and others in the cast. However, Ashley Tisdale, who played Sharpay, was not. However, there was a moment when she did realize her co-star was “hot.”

While on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast Tisdale talked about her experience on High School Musical, as well as the fan response to Sharpay. Then, when asked if she had a crush on Zac Efron back in the day, she said:

The issue of Rolling Stone Tisdale is referring to shows Efron barely wearing a white t-shirt, abs on full display, next to a headline that reads “The New American Heartthrob Zac Efron.”  So, yeah I would think if there was a moment to realize your co-star was hot, this would be the moment. Following the wildly popular High School Musical trilogy Efron has gone on to star in movies that made him even more of a heartthrob, including 17 Again, Neighbors, Dirty Grandpa and Baywatch. I’d even say to this day the actor is still an actor ladies love. 

However, I can see where Tisdale is coming from when she said she never really had a crush on him. The two actors are two years apart in age; Tisdale was around 21 when HSM was made, and Efron was around 19, which is a time when a two-year age gap does make a big difference. Also, when the movie came out on Disney Channel, Tisdale was already working on the popular series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, while Efron had not starred in anything big until High School Musical, making this big sister, little brother relationship clearer. 

The actress has also explained that because she sees Efron as a brother he never had a crush on him, and she said it was why her worst on-screen kiss was with the Troy Bolton actor. While I’d assume we’ll never see the two play love interests based on these comments, I do hope we’ll see them on a screen together again at some point. 

In the years since High School Musical the cast has gone on to star in bigger projects, however many fans are wondering if we’ll get Tisdale, Efron and Hudgens back for an HSM reunion. While we know many OG stars will return to East High by way of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Season 4, the actors behind Troy, Gabriella, and Sharpay were missing from that list. Tisdale and Hudgens are still in contact with each other, along with other cast members, so hopefully, they’ll at least come back to a small cameo as their iconic characters on HSMTMTS. 

I have hope we’ll get to see Tisdale, Efron, and company back together again sometime soon. However, while we wait to find out if they’re still “All In This Together” you can watch all three High School Musical movies and the spinoff series with a Disney+ subscription. 

Vanessa Hudgens could be considered the queen of many things; she rules Netflix Christmas movies, in the 2010s she was the queen of Coachella, and she was a princess of Disney Channel. But one thing she’s consistently been a queen of is Halloween. Every year she rocks spooky season with her elaborate costumes, and this year’s festivities began with a Natalie Portman-Inspired look.

The actress always goes hard for Halloween, and this year, she and her friend GG Magree took inspiration from Portman’s Academy Award-winning performance in Black Swan. The duo dressed up as Portman and Mila Kunis’ characters The Swan Queen and The Black Swan, respectively, check it out: 

These looks are iconic, and such a clever idea. Personally, I think this is such a unique, yet recognizable costume. Hudgens and Magree’s poses are so fun, and the costumes are impeccable. They for sure did one of Natalie Portman’s best movies justice. 

I also find this idea so genius, because it’s an unconventional scary costume. Black Swan is a psychological thriller that is honestly scary, and while it’s not what you’d likely consider for Halloween, it’s a fitting movie and costume idea for the spooky season. 

Hudgens has a history of iconic costumes, she always rocks multiple elaborate looks throughout Hallo-week, and posts lots of spooky content throughout the month of October. In the past she’s dressed up as the Black Widow (not the Avenger), a witchy version of the Bring it On cheerleaders, Catwoman in a full leather outfit, a gothic queen, and a cabaret-inspired look, and that’s not even scratching the surface of Hudgens’ history of epic costumes. 

She’s also written about how much she loves Halloween, captioning one post from 2020, with: 

You know when Hudgens’ Instagram goes black and white, we’re in for a treat, because she truly thrives during the haunted month. 

The High School Musical actress has also spoken about how she thinks she’s able to communicate with ghosts. She said she’s always seen things, and eventually came around to accepting it, calling it a “gift.” When you add this on to her love for Halloween, it totally makes sense why she is living her best life every October.

While this is Hudgens' month, she also rules December. The actress has starred in four-holiday movies for Netflix that are all extremely popular. From the Princess Switch movies to the stand-alone The Knight Before Christmas the actress has a plethora of festive films to check out after the spooky season is over. 

However, that’s me getting a bit ahead of myself. Hudgens’ Halloween is just getting started. The actress always has an epic lineup of costumes, and this Black Swan look is only the beginning.

Allow me to set the scene, it’s July, and the third season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is up next on the TV schedule. I’m scrolling through Instagram and nearly throw my phone out of excitement when I see Vanessa Hudgens has posted a video in front of East High. The internet blew up, and theories and speculation began to run around about the actress returning to the franchise that started her career. Now she's providing a bit of clarity as to why she was there, if she'll be on HSMTMTS, and her thoughts on Zac Efron's serendipitous post in front of the legendary school.

The actress did an interview with EW and  she was asked about her video at East High, Hudgens responded with: 

Hudgens' boyfriend, Cole Tucker is an outfielder for the Arizona Diamondbacks, and while his team was playing in Utah, the actress tagged along. Which is what led to this nostalgic video: 

Then a few weeks later, Troy Bolton himself, Zac Efron also posted a photo at East High, and Hudgens responded in the best way.

To add fuel to the already blazing fire of speculation, Zac Efron posted a Breakfast Club-inspired photo in front of the high school not too long after Hudgens. Check it out: 

These two posts led a lot of fans to believe the duo would return to the High School Musical franchise, however, it turned out to just be a coincidence. In response to the post, Hudgens said: 

She's right she is a trendsetter, now hopefully this means they'll both come back. Even though the stars haven’t shown up on HSMTMTS Efron has said he’d be down to come back if he has time. He adorably said his “heart’s still there” and that going back to East High would be “incredible.” With this new interview, Hudgens has also chimed in about if she’d return.

The Gabriella Actress Weighs In On Possibly Appearing On High School Musical: The Musical: The Series 

While we have seen the return of Corbin Bleu and other High School Musical alum to the spin-off Disney+ series, fans have been begging for the two leads to come back. With the announcement of many OG HSM cast members coming in for Season 4 of HSMTMTS one of the biggest questions after Season 3 has been if Efron, Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale would be back as well. 

While Efron has said he’d be down, he is a busy fella. Hudgens is in a similar boat, but when asked if she’d return, she said: 

Well, it's not a no. 

It would for sure be a blessing if she was able to come back, even if it was just a little cameo in the upcoming season. However, with these coincidental posts from Utah, and the return of basically everyone but them to the franchise, it seems highly likely both Efron and Hudgens will “Work This Out” and come back so that we're truly "all in this together" come Season 4 of HSMTMTS.

As a companion piece to his new album of the same name Kid Cudi, also known as Scott Mescudi dropped an animated movie called Entergalactic. It’s animated in a Spider-verse-esque style and uses Kid Cudi’s new tracks to supplement the story being told. 

The special is a unique addition to the 2022 movie schedule and stars a fun ensemble cast of musicians, actors and even Kid Cudi’s family. Big names like Timothée Chalamet are also involved.   

Scott "Kid Cudi" Mescudi 

Scott Mescudi (also known as Kid Cudi) plays Jabari, a graffiti and comic book artist who is trying to make a name for himself. While Kid Cudi is best known for his music -- like his album Man On the Moon: The End of Day, and being featured on tracks by Kanye West and Travis Scott -- he’s also acted in a few movies. He’s recently shown up in Ti West’s X, which just got a prequel, and last year’s Don’t Look Up. 

Jessica Williams 

 Jessica Williams plays Jabari’s love interest and neighbor Meadow. She’s a photographer who is working to put up her first exhibit. The actress has shown up in multiple comedies like The Incredible Jessica James and Booksmart. In 2021 she starred opposite William Jackson Harper in Love Life. She also plays Eulalie Hicks in the Fantastic Beasts movies.  

Laura Harrier 

Laura Harrier plays Jabari’s ex, Carmen. Let’s just say she makes things complicated. The actress is best known for her work as Liz, Peter Parker’s crush, in Spider-Man: Homecoming and was in Spike Lee’s movie BlaKkKlansman. 

Ty Dolla $ign 

Ty Dolla $ign is one-third of Jabari’s friend trio, his name is Ky. As a rapper, Ty Dolla $ign has worked on tons of movie soundtracks, including F9: The Fast Saga, Suicide Squad and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. He’s also done a few cameos, including two episodes of Insecure. 

Timothée Chalamet 

Jimmy is the other third of Jabari’s friend trio, and he is played by Timothée Chalamet. Likely the most well-known actor on this list, Chalamet is known for his work in Call Me By Your Name, Little Women and Dune. He will soon be back as Paul Atreides along with the rest of the Dune 2 cast. He also recently dropped the trailer for Bones and All, and will star in the upcoming movie Wonka. 

Vanessa Hudgens 

Meadow’s best friend Karina is played by Vanessa Hudgens. She is pregnant and she provides advice to Meadow and Jabari during their relationship. Hudgens recently appeared in Tick, Tick…Boom!, and she is a holiday staple with Netflix’s The Princess Switch movies. Back in the day, she made a name for herself by playing Gabriella in the Disney Channel classic High School Musical. 

Christopher Abbott 

Christopher Abbott plays Reed, an art dealer working with Meadow. The actor played Yossarian in the mini-series adaptation of Catch-22. He’s also appeared in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and the show Girls.  

Keith David 

Mr. Rager is Jabari’s smooth-talking character he is working to turn into the star of a comic book series. He’s played by Keith David, whose iconic voice has also appeared in Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, where he played Dr. Facilier. He’s also known for his roles in The Thing and Armageddon.  

Arturo Castro 

Arturo Castro plays Len, Jabari’s co-worker at Cosmic Comics. While Castro hasn’t appeared in much, he’s known for his role on Broad City, and he will be playing Pablo Escobar in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. He’s also had small roles on American Dad! and Terminal List.  

Jaden Smith 

 Jaden Smith plays Jordan, a BMX superstar, who talks with Jabari and Jimmy about their relationships. The actor-turned-musician is the son of Will Smith. Jaden is known as an actor for his work with his dad in the Pursuit of Happyness. He’s also a musician who has his own music and has been featured on tracks with Young Thug, Tyler, The Creator and A$AP Rocky.  

070 Shake 

070 Shake plays Nadia, an artist who is showing an exhibit in the same museum as Meadow. 070 Shake is know for her music, Entergalactic her first foray into acting. She has appeared on various movie soundtracks though, including the HBO series Industry and the movies Scream and Black Is King.  

 Macaulay Culkin 

Downtown Pat is a stoner man who the boys run into at the skate park. Voiced by Macaulay Culkin he tells the boys a story of a girl he met at the club. Though it’s just a cameo, Culkin is one of the better-known actors in this cast. Obviously, he’s best known for the Home Alone movies and My Girl which he starred in at a very young age. Recently he’s appeared on shows like American Horror Story and The Righteous Gemstones.  

 Maisha Mescudi 

Maisha Mescudi plays Ellie, Jabari’s older sister. Maisha is Kid Cudi’s older sister in real life too. Entergalactic is the only movie she’s appeared in and she’s not in the music business.  

 Francesca Reale 

Francesca Reale plays Sydnie, an artist and friend of Reed’s. The actress has appeared in supporting roles on a lot of Netflix’s popular projects. She played Heather Holloway in Season 3 of Stranger Things and recently had a supporting role in the movie Do Revenge.  

 Kenya Barris 

Kenya Burris makes a small appearance as a moderator. Burris also worked closely with Kid Cudi to create the Netflix special, as a writer and executive producer on Entergalactic. He mentioned that he learned a lot making it, and liked working on a “musically-driven project.” Along with this special, he created the hit TV shows Black-ish and Grown-ish and wrote the 2022 version of Cheaper by the Dozen.  

 Luis Guzmán 

In a quick cameo, Luis Guzmán shows up as a huge mover who helps Jabari move into his new apartment. Guzmán is best known for his roles in movies like Boogie Nights and Punch-Drunk Love. He’s also been on quite a few shows, he was a recurring character on Narcos, and he can soon be seen as Gomez Addams on Wednesday.  

 Teyana Taylor 

Teyana Taylor makes a cameo as a boxing instructor in the movie. She is known for her work in Coming 2 America and Kanya West: Fade. She’s best known as a musician and has quite a few albums including K.T.S.E. and The Album. 

There are lots of recognizable names and voices throughout Entergalactic. Barris has spoken about the possibility of continuing the story of these characters, which would be super fun, especially with such a great cast from the music and film industries. For now, though, you can check out Kid Cudi’s animated feature with a Netflix subscription. 

We already knew Vanessa Hudgens had moves since she got her start in the High School Musical movies on Disney Channel, but did you know Vanessa Hudgens knows her way around a pole too? Pole dancing has become a popular form of dance exercise as of late for many, including for Hudgens, who took up the hobby during lockdown with Zoom lessons. Recently she even showed them off with a Spider-Man-themed dance routine. 

Hudgens is a massive fan of all things Halloween and dressing up, she is often more active on her Instagram over spooky season to show her latest costumes. In a new post, she shared a fun video of her dancing to Michael Bublé's cover of the Spider-Man theme song, and she looks like she’s having the time of her life. 

The Princess Switch actress captioned the post with only “NERD” as other celebrities responded. Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland, who is a good friend of hers, said “I can’t take how cute this is,” whilst fellow former child star Keke Palmer responded with a ton of laughing-crying emojis, and Paris Hilton dropped some heart eyes. 

Hudgens previously revealed that when COVID-19 hit and we were all bored at home, she signed up for a pole dancing class online, which was “no joke” for the actress, via The Reporter. She said that she got “lots of bruises” while learning how to do routines on the pole. Vanessa Hudgens also met her boyfriend, baseball player Cole Tucker, in a Zoom meditation group. The actress' decision to branch out online certainly worked in her favor, as the couple is still together nearly two years after they were first spotted together. 

Funny enough, the actress, who was recently a voice in Kid Cudi’s Entergalactic Netflix special, shared that her first FaceTime with Cole Tucker was in a Spider-Woman costume, making the whole getup perhaps pretty important and memorable for the actress. I have no clue when the video was filmed, but the post seems to be part of Hudgens’ spooky batch of posts for the Halloween season. 

Around the same time as the video, it was announced that Hudgens will star in an unscripted spooky movie called Dead Hot: Season of the Witch, per Variety. The movie will document the actress’ journey to Salem, Massachusetts with her best friend GG Magree to learn about witches, ghost hunting, and the spirit world. It should also be noted Hudgens has said before that she believes she can communicate with ghosts. 

Along with Entergalactic recently being released, which can be watched with a Netflix subscription, Vanessa Hudgens has a host of recent movies on the streaming site, including the critically-acclaimed musical Tick, Tick Boom! which she made with Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield, and the three Princess Switch movies. While the actress is not in the High School Musical reunion lineup, here’s hoping she gets a cameo.

As a zillennial, I live for the nostalgic days of old Disney Channel like a millennial, and I love the new self-aware programming that's been released on Disney+ like a Gen Z. Which makes High School Musical: The Musical: The Series the perfect show for me. Now, with Season 3 over and Season 4 on its way, I’m left with lots of questions about what might happen next, and how Season 4 could call back to the original High School Musical. 

Season 3 took the students and viewers to Camp Shallow Lake, where the cast put on a production of Frozen while Corbin Bleu came back to HSM to make a documentary about the summer. Chaos ensued and left me with five big questions going into Season 4.  

How Will The Documentary Impact Things Moving Forward?

While all the kids were excited about the documentary, they soon found out it portrayed them as terrible, dramatic people. The love triangle between Ricky, Gina and EJ looked a lot more dramatic than it is. They made it look like Gina and Kourtney are rivals. And Jet professed his love for Kourtney. To quote Ashlyn: 

The episode promptly ends with everyone leaving the theater and not addressing their problems. Leaving the door open for lots, and lots, and lots of drama in Season 4.

Which Relationships Will Survive?

The season ended with the state of many romantic relationships up in the air. 

The big news was that Gina broke up with EJ and professed her love for Ricky at the end of the season. They kissed and now we’ll just have to wait and see if it works out. Both Ricky and Gina haven’t been able to make relationships last more than a season, so I’m not sure if they will work out in Season 4. 

There are two other couples I'm curious about. Ashlyn came out as bisexual in Season 3 and had a crush on one of the girls at camp. She wasn’t feeling so sure about her boyfriend Big Red, but at the end of the season we found out he’s bi too, and she seemed super happy about that. 

I have hope for these two for sure! As for Carlos and Seb, things might be a little murkier. Carlos was a major instigator of drama in Season 3 and after the documentary makes him look like he cheated on Seb, he immediately got out of his chair to call his boyfriend. Leaving things up in the air. 

How Much High School Musical Music Will Actually Be In Season 4?

The reason I love HSMTMTS is the music. It’s filled with fun original songs, some of which are written by actors on the show like Joshua Bassett, Olivia Rodrigo and Dara Reneé. The music also pulls at my nostalgic heartstrings by incorporating songs from High School Musical, HSM 2, Camp Rock, and Disney classics like Beauty and the Beast and Frozen. While all these originals and non-HSM songs are fine and dandy, I personally think there should be way more music from the Disney Channel movies that started it all. I’m feeling good about our odds to see this in Season 4 because the showrunner Tim Federle told People:

We haven’t heard any songs from High School Musical 3 yet, and some of the classics from the sequel of the HSM trilogy have not been used (I’m looking at you “I Don’t Dance” and “Work This Out”). So fingers crossed we get even more of the throwback hits come Season 4.

Will Olivia Rodrigo Ever Return?

At the end of Season 2, I felt certain Olivia Rodrigo would not return for Season 3 of HSMTMTS. As one of the biggest pop stars at the moment, I assumed she wouldn’t have the time. I was surprised when I saw her in the promo for the newest season. However, she only appeared in a few episodes in a very minor role. At the end of the season, it felt like her character Nini got a meaningful send-off as she left for LA to pursue a songwriter career. While this all feels confirmed, it’s not. Federle recently told EW:

So while it feels like she’s gone, I don’t think we can leave her out of the equation. Maybe Rodrigo will for Season 4, even if it’s just a 'lil cameo...

Will We See Troy, Gabriella And Sharpay Back At East High?

Lastly, and what I would consider most important, there have been rumors swirling around the two leads High School Musical, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, returning for Season 4. From what Federle told EW (in the article we linked to previously), while there is no solid answer as to if the duo will be back, there will be cameos in Season 4. 

Toward the beginning of the latest season original HSM cast members posted that they were at the real East High in Utah; Troy Bolton himself, Zac Efron posted on July 22 and our Gabriella, Vanessa Hudgens, posted a video on June 26. In August, Ashley Tisdale posted a fun video to the HSM 3 bop “I Want It All.” Efron has also said he would happily come back to the franchise, saying his “heart is still there.”

So all signs seem to point toward Tory, Gabriella and maybe Sharpay possibly returning for Season 4. Especially with the announcement that Season 4 is set to follow the students back at East High in the midst of the filming of High School Musical 4: The Reunion. However, nothing has been confirmed for an appearance by Efron, Hudgens or Tisdale. 

Disney+ announced that the season is confirmed to feature OG HSM cast members: Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed and Kaycee Stroh. They will be playing themselves, like how Bleu did in Season 3. 

As for, HSM4, the movie within the show, the actors will reprise their roles as Chad Danforth, Taylor McKessie, Ryan Evans, Coach Jack Bolton, Ms. Darbus and Martha Cox, respectively.  With the confirmed return of just about everyone except Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale, it seems inevitable that the three would join the cast somehow, even if it's a little cameo. 

In summary, there are a lot of question marks going into Season 4 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. But after Season 3 it seems like they have set the stage for something massive next season between the relationships, documentary fallout, and the possibility of a historic reunion. Season 4 is still a ways away but for now, you can check out the first three seasons of HSMTMTS with a Disney+ subscription.

During the D23 Expo early this month, the studio excited Disney Channel fans when it was announced that the fourth season of High School Musical: The Musical - The Series would include a storyline where High School Musical 4: The Reunion was being filmed at East High with the show’s high schooler going cast being extras in the meta movie. As production for Season 4 begins, the returning original cast has been revealed with some key stars missing. 

In a Disney+ press release, it was announced that HSMTMTS is currently filming in Salt Lake City, Utah with some memorable original cast members back at East High. Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed and Kaycee Stroh are returning to the franchise after starring in the original trilogy, but its biggest stars Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale are notably absent from the lineup. Corbin Bleu returns for his second season in the Disney+ series following Season 3, where he played “a bit of an ass” version of himself as the East High kids went to summer camp and he led a filmed production of Frozen. Lucas Grabeel also previously guest starred in the series’ first season. Monique Coleman and Bleu previously reunited for Lifetime’s A Christmas Dance Reunion last year after playing Chad and Taylor. 

Alyson Reed played East High’s theater teacher Ms. Darbus, Bart Johnson played the father of Zac Efron’s Troy Bolton and Kaycee Stroh was a supporting character named Martha Cox, who revealed “hip-hop is my passion!” in the “Stick To The Status Quo” number. While it’ll be exciting to see these High School Musical original cast members back at East High for the “filming” of the fourth movie in the franchise within the show, it really won’t be the same without the movies’ brightest stars and leads. 

Months back, on separate days, both Vanessa Hudgens (on Instagram on June 26) and Zac Efron (also on his Instagram on July 22) posted on social media their return to East High. It led fans to believe it was coinciding with their reunion moment, however HSMTMTS has reportedly only now begun filming. When the show’s creator Tim Federle was asked about it, he said this to TVLine: 

Previously, Zac Efron has shared his hopes to return to Troy Bolton someday, but for the time being, it seems like the High School Musical reunion is incomplete with the trio of Disney Channel stars not on set with their former costars. You know, when I married a Filipina, I didn’t just marry her. I married into her entire family. And while I can’t really marry into her culture, I have certainly adopted a great deal of it, not only for myself, but also for my two children, as I want them to embrace being both Black and Filipino. In that way, I’ve become very familiar with Filipino food, Filipino traditions, and of course, Filipino actors. 

Because you know what’s interesting? There are quite a few actors that you know and love who have Filipino roots. I would be remiss if I was talking about Filipinos and didn’t mention Jo Koy and his great comedy specials, because if you’re Filipino, then you’re likely familiar with Jo Koy. But, with him now mentioned, here are seven great Filipino actors, and where to watch them.  

Dave Bautista - Guardians of the Galaxy 

I've always believed that every great wrestler could make for a great actor, since they're pretty much maintaining a role and storyline every single week. Dwayne Johnson's best recognized for his movies now, but for a time, wrestling fans were on the edge of their seats for him every week when he portrayed The Rock. And, the same could be said for Dave Bautista, who simply went by Batista when he was still wrestling in the WWE. Bautista is the son of a Greek mother, and a Filipino father, making him biracial.   

As an actor, Bautisa has been in a lot of noteworthy films lately, such as his brief (but potent) role in Dune, which he considered “a blessing," the lead role in Army of the Dead, and many others. But he’s definitely best known as Drax the Destroyer, in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. The third film will be the last time we see Bautista play Drax, but you can still check him out in Volumes 1 and 2, if you ever start to miss him.

Lea Salonga - Mulan 

Any theater-junkie can tell you that Lea Salonga can act and sing her heart out. In fact, the quintessential version of Kim from Miss Saigon, belongs to Miss Salonga, who portrayed her in both the original West End production, as well as the eventual Broadway version, making her the first Asian actress to ever win a Tony Award. She was also the first Asian actress to portray the roles of Eponine and Fantine for Les Miserables, so her theater cred is well established.  

That said, most Disney fans will likely know her pipes from the singing voices of both the original Princess Jasmine as well as Fa Mulan from the animated versions of Aladdin and Mulan, respectively. Honestly, when I think of my favorite Disney songs, I usually hear them in Lea Salonga’s voice, and I know that I’m not alone.

Dante Basco - Avatar: The Last Airbender 

I, like many people of a certain age, was introduced to Dante Basco from the Steven Spielberg movie, Hook (though, his first movie role was actually as Romeo in Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, which is a movie that scarred me as a child). In Hook, though, he played the leader of the Lost Boys, Rufio, and (spoiler alert!) what happened to him in that movie also scarred me as a child.   

But, I think he’s probably most known now as the voice of Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Some of the best episodes of Avatar feature Zuko, and they wouldn’t be nearly as good if Basco didn’t infuse his voice with such a full range of emotions. In every way, Dante Basco brought the heart and soul to Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Vanessa Hudgens - Tick, Tick…BOOM! 

Like Lea Salonga, Vanessa Hudgens is a singer who can also act. Her late father was of Irish, French, and Native American descent, and her mother is a Filipina, making her biracial, much like Bautista. (And my own children!) Hudgens rose to fame with High School Musical as Gabriella Montez, but has also been in a number of other popular films like Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Spring Breakers, and was even in the DC sitcom, Powerless, so she’s got massive range.    

But, I wanted to focus on Vanessa Hudgens in tick, tick...BOOM!, as she did a marvelous job as the friend of Jonathan Larson (played by Andrew Garfield) and also a performer in his plays. Through her acting and singing, she proved yet again what a powerhouse force she can be.

Lou Diamond Phillips - Longmire 

Lou Diamond Phillips was born in the Philippines to a Filipina mother and an American father of Scotch-Irish Cherokee descent. He’s been around since the early '80s, but rose to superstardom when he played Ritchie Valens in La Bamba back in 1987. One year later, he played the troubled youth, Angel Guzman, in the classic school movie, Stand and Deliver. And he’s been acting pretty much nonstop ever since.   

I wanted to focus, though, on his work in the long-running show, Longmire. Phillips plays the sagacious Cheyenne, Henry Standing Bear, who runs a bar and is Longmire’s best friend. Phillips plays him with the kind of confidence that only an actor of several decades could acquire, making him feel both ancient and fresh as a character at the same time.

Tia Carrere - Lilo & Stitch

Tia Carrere was born in Hawaii, but her lineage is Filipino. I’ll always loved her for her work in the two Wayne’s World movies as Cassandra Wong, but she’s had a long career in both movies and television, with some of her credits including the soap opera General Hospital, the comedy High School High, and the James Cameron action movie, True Lies, with Arnold Schwarzenegger.  

That said, like Lea Salonga and Dante Basco, a lot of people, especially young people, might know Carrere best from her voice, as she voiced Lilo’s older sister, Nani, in the Disney movie, Lilo & Stitch. Tia Carrere plays Nani perfectly as a super stressed, older sister who is just trying to keep the little family they have together. Plus, it’s set in Hawaii, which plays into Carrere’s birth place. Just always remember, “Ohana means family.”

Jacob Batalon - Let It Snow 

And lastly, I wanted to highlight Jacob Batalon, who, when I asked my wife for potential actors to talk about for this article, she said, “Little Spider-Man.” When I pressed her on who she meant, she said, “You know, Little Spider-Man. His friend.” That’s when I realized she meant Ned Leeds from the recent Spider-Man trilogy, and yes, Jacob Batalon is Filipino, and he plays Ned Leeds in the Spider-Man movies. 

But, everybody knows that. So, I instead chose to focus on his role as Keon in the Netflix romantic comedy, Let It Snow, which is based on a YA novel. In it, Batalon plays a loveable employee named Keon at a diner called Waffle Town. It’s an ensemble cast, and it all leads to a big party that he throws, which brings all the characters together. It’s a fun little holiday film, and Jacob Batalon is a highlight.

As far as dark-haired beauties communicating with the dead, Jennifer Love-Hewitt has had the title of Ghost Whisperer locked down for quite some time. While her communications with ghosts have strictly been a work of fiction for TV, High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens is apparently taking up the reins in a very real way. The Princess Switch franchise star has now opened up about her alleged ability to talk to ghosts and explained the supernatural experiences she has had throughout her life.

During an interview won The Kelly Clarkson Show, Vanessa Hudgens spoke about her breakout role in High School Musical, which occurred 16 years ago, and how her life has shaped up since. When asked about her new passions, Hudgens speaks on accepting her paranormal “gift” that she had previously pushed aside due to fear. Here is what she says, exactly:

If you would have told me 16 years ago as I was watching Troy and Gabriella singing “Breaking Free” on that high school stage that the actress who plays Gabriella would be investigating ghosts today, I probably would have laughed in your face. Although, I probably wouldn’t have just been like “interesting” if an inanimate object started moving on its own accord next to me, either.

So while celebrities like Courtney Cox may have allegedly had bad run-ins with ghosts, it sounds like Vanessa Hudgens’ are a little more promising. And if that weren't enough, the star has even been using equipment to help with her endeavors. She further explained during the interview that she's been using a number of tools, with her favorite being a Spirit Box. According to the star, the object  scans radios frequencies and allows spirits to speak through it. This device has served her well, as she even recounted a situation at a cemetery, during which she and a friend talked with a ghost.

It's clear that the Bad Boys for Life star has had some very niche experiences in her life without even taking her singing and acting career into account. Whether you believe in the paranormal or not, there’s a certain amount of respect you’ve got to give to someone who overcomes their fear and embraces what the “unknown” has to offer instead. The mere thought of such a thing could lead some to a meltdown, like the Gabriella actress had when auditioning with Zac Efron.

Amid her chats with those in the afterlife, Vanessa Hudgens had an awesome year last year opposite Andrew Garfield in tick, tick…BOOM! , which she's incredibly proud of. She also returned for the third installment of her Netflix The Princess Switch franchise and may or may not return for a fourth installment. Now, 2022 will see her fighting off not ghosts, but zombies in Zack Snyder’s Army of The Dead: Lost Vegas series. As she continues to work though, I wouldn't mind getting occasional updates on her supernatural encounters.

There's a lot you can stream if you like Vanessa Hudgens though, if you're nostalgic for her High School Musical days, you can totally grab a Disney+ subscription and stream the the trilogy of films (which are all ghost-free).

Together, together! Together, everyone! You know this one? Come on, a lot of us memorized every dance move to the High School Musical movie when the Disney Channel hit first premiered over 15 years ago. The Academy Awards' after party was graced with some Wildcat energy with Vanessa Hudgens joining the festivities alongside one of her co-stars from the Disney trilogy.  

Hudgens reunited with Monique Coleman, who played Taylor McKessie to her Gabriella Montez in the classic musical movies. On Instagram, Vanessa Hudgens shared a boomerang of her alongside the fellow Wildcat while all dolled up at an Oscars after party together. Check it: 

When Gabriella first joined East High as a new student in the 2006 film, Coleman’s character Taylor helped her start to find her place in the school with the Scholastic Decathlon Team. However, she was also pulled in the direction of musical theatre and Zac Efron’s Troy Bolton as the star basketball player dealt with a similar push and pull. 

The actresses worked together in the 2007 sequel High School Musical 2 and 2008’s High School Musical 3: Senior Year as well before embarking on their own careers following the East High Wildcats graduating. Hudgens famously dated Efron while filming the Disney Channel films before moving on with other relationships. The actress is still close with Ashley Tisdale through the Sharpay actress starting a family of her own.   

Monique Coleman recently reunited with her High School Musical co-star Corbin Blue on the small screen by working together again for Lifetime movie A Christmas Dance Reunion. The actress has been open about what it was like behind the scenes of High School Musical in recent years, getting real about Taylor’s famed headbands being a product of hairstylists on set not knowing how to do her hair in a predominantly white cast. 

It’s great to see this pair of girls still making time to catch up with each other after all this time and having fun on Oscar night. Vanessa Hudgens had the honor of hosting the pre-show on ABC this year after finding a role in Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed musical Tick, Tick… Boom! alongside Andrew Garfield, who was nominated under the Best Actor category. 

The High School Musical series has lived on with the streaming series starring Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett. The show played tribute to the original movies and spawned young stars of their own. Hollywood is an industry that has become synonymous with the American Dream and what would the story of the American dream be without immigrants? The United States is built on generations of people coming in from all over the world to build a country that in many ways is a combination of many cultures from outside America. The immigrant experience is a nearly universal one many Americans can relate to, but one that cannot be defined in one way. In celebration of our immigrants, we’re highlighting some famous actors’ stories, including Shang Chi star Simu Liu. 

Breaking into the movie industry is not an easy safe to crack, but these actors not only pulled it off, they’ve also used their platforms to bring light to their personal experiences as immigrants or children of immigrants. Let’s take a look: 

Simu Liu 

Okay, so Simu Liu is Canadian, but the breakout Marvel star has taken a refreshingly candid approach to speaking to his roots having Canadian-Chinese parents. This spring he’s releasing a memoir called We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story to explore his roots ahead of starring in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Liu was born in China in 1989, at a time when his parents were given the opportunity to study in America. Liu was raised by his grandparents until the age of 5, when he was brought to Canada to live with them. 

As Liu recalled in a 2017 column in Maclean’s, he long had a difficult relationship with his parents as their wishes for him were to find a stable 9-to-5 and he got fired from his accounting firm eight months in. It was then that Liu decided to pursue work in the world of movies, beginning with a minimum wage job on a Guillermo del Toro movie. After years of odd jobs, Liu found a steady TV  gig on Kim’s Convinience before nabbing the Marvel hero role. As he’s shared, his relationship with his parents, being the child of immigrants being raised in a Western world, especially where anti-Asian rhetoric can be a concern, was not always easy, but as he grew older, he realized his upbringing helped pave his path, even if it’s much different than they envisioned. 

Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek grew up in Mexico as the daughter of immigrants as well, with a Spanish mother and Lebanese father. As a young woman, Hayek quit school to pursue acting and became a telenovela star in her native country, per Biography. However, Hayek was especially ambitious and decided to move to Los Angeles to make it in Hollywood. In a 2003 guest appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Hayek shared her experience: 

Hayek’s big break was in Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado alongside Antonio Banderas back in 1995 before becoming a massive Hollywood star, beginning her own production company and becoming the first Latin actress to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars. As Hayek recently reflected on The Drew Barrymore Show, when she was rejected early in her incredible career, she couldn’t help but be aware of the untapped market of Latinos Hollywood was ignoring at the time. Nowadays, Hayek is one of the most beloved actors of our time with a great immigrant story about going against the grain. 

Kumail Nanjiani

Another recent Marvel star and Salma Hayek’s fellow Eternals co-star Kumail Nanjiani hails originally from Karachi, Pakistan and was raised as a Muslim. After high school, Nanjiani moved to Iowa where he studied computer science and philosophy before he started doing stand-up comedy in Chicago. Being a young immigrant, Nanjiani’s comedy has often skewed toward his experience as a topic of conversation, such as this observation, per USA Today:  

Nanjiani got his big break with a role in Silicon Valley, but when he and his wife Emily Gordon adapted their love story into 2017’s critically-acclaimed The Big Sick, Nanjiani’s immigrant story was given a larger stage. Since then, Nanjiani has become an A-list star, but continues to make his roots part of his storytelling, such as with his Little America series, which can be viewed with an AppleTV+ subscription, and has become the first South Asian superhero in Eternals. 

Mila Kunis

That ‘70s Show actress Mila Kunis was born in Ukraine and then moved to United States when she was seven, in the ‘80s, after the fall of the Soviet Union. The actress once told Glamour about her family’s immigrant story: 

As Kunis shared, her parents ultimately found their way in the U.S, with her father owning cabs and her mother working her way up to be a manager at Rite-Aid. Even though they had treacherous immigration beginnings, Kunis felt like she “never missed out on anything” because they did such a “beautiful job” of not making her feel poor. These days, Kunis is an accomplished actress and wife to Ashton Kutcher, who she has two kids with. 

Diane Guerrero

Diane Guerrero was a breakout star in Netflix’s award-winning series Orange is the New Black for numerous seasons before also being part of Jane the Virgin, the DC universe for Doom Patrol and in Disney’s latest hit Encanto, as the voice of Isabela. Guerrero is a New Jersey-born American actress, but grew up as the only member in her immediate family with U.S. citizenship, her parents being immigrants from Colombia. As Guerrero shared to NPR, when she was 14 she experienced her parents getting deported. In her words: 

Diane Guerrero ended up being taken in by her friend’s family for the school year and visiting her parents in prison. She also recalls being “looked as less” as an American citizen with undocumented parents. Guerrero has used her platform to be a big advocate for immigration reform since her experience. 

Vanessa Hudgens 

Vanessa Hudgens is also an American-born actress, with her father being a native of the U.S. whereas her Filipina mother’s native country is Manila. Following the actress’ success in High School Musical, a number of Netflix holiday films and the recent Oscar-nominated movie Tick, Tick… Boom!, Hudgens has shared that she wants to make a movie about her mother’s immigration story. She said this: 

There are many forms of immigration stories and the millions of people living in America and other countries after making the difficult adjustment is an important thing for people with big platforms like these actors to continue to discuss. 

When it comes to relationships, these celebrity couples met on the sets of some of their most famous movies. From romantic films such as The Notebook to action movies like Daredevil, through the power of film, many of these couples were brought together. Here are 25 couples who met on the set of a movie but ended up dating in real life. 

Ryan Gosling And Rachel McAdams (The Notebook)

While you may know The Notebook as one of the best romance films out there, the two leading stars actually met on the set of the film, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. In an interview with GQ in 2007, Gosling confirmed he was thankful for the movie, as he met her through it despite the fact that their relationship ended.

While they did eventually break up in 2007, no one can quite forget this romance, both on and off screen.  

Emma Stone And Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man Series)

When Andrew Garfield was Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man series, he and his on-screen Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone, ended up dating for four years after meeting on the set of the first movie. While they split back in 2015, Garfield recently said that he’s still her biggest fan during an interview with Vanity Fair’s “Little Gold Men” podcast:

Angelina Jolie And Brad Pitt (Mr. And Mrs. Smith) 

On the set of the spy-movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith (which is getting a reboot), Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt met. In an interview with Vogue (via People) in 2006, Jolie confirmed that they developed feelings for each other while filming, but didn’t start thinking of getting together instantly. 

Jolie and Pitt married in 2014, but later filed for divorce.  

Robert Pattinson And Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Series)

The Twilight series was a huge hit for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who played Edward and Bella in the adaptation of the popular vampire series, and they began dating after the first Twilight film released in 2008, according to an interview Stewart did with The New Yorker. They did eventually break up. 

Freida Pinto And Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire)

In an interview with People, Natalie gushed about her husband and how much she loved working with him again on a new film, called Vox Lux in 2018.

Matthew Broderick And Jennifer Grey (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)

While they may have played siblings in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Matthew Broderick and Jennifer Grey were actually entangled in a relationship during their time on set. Jennifer Grey spoke about her relationship with the actor in her memoir, Out of the Corner, and how it was hard to keep it a secret from everyone else. 

Once filming ended, according to the memoir, they separated temporarily before getting back together, and dated in 1988. They were also briefly engaged but called it off not that long after. 

Johnny Depp And Winona Ryder (Edward Scissorhands)

While they originally met in the lobby of a New York theater in 1989, according to Rolling Stone (via Cheat Sheet), Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder’s relationship only grew more after co-starring in Edward Scissorhands in 1990, so much so that Depp proposed to Ryder only five months into dating. 

However, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 1993, Depp confirmed they had split up due to the privacy the media wouldn’t let them have.

Both Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy met on the set of Evening, according to an interview Dancy did with London Evening Standard in 2013, saying that marriage to the star, as well as fatherhood, is treating him “very well.”

Goldie Hawn And Kurt Russell (The One And Only, Genuine, Original Family Band)

This long-lasting partnership started way back when in 1966. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell originally met on the set of The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, but it wasn’t until Swing Shift in 1984 that they began dating. In an interview with People, Hawn admits that the two don’t see a point in marriage.  

The pair have been together for 40 years, and recently starred in The Christmas Chronicles 2 together in 2020.

While the two had actually first met at university together, both Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz were brought back together while filming Dream House. Weisz spoke with The Evening Standard in 2018 on her relationship, and how she never thought she would get married, until she started dating Craig.

The High School Musical series was a huge hit for the Disney Channel, and onscreen love interests, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, turned that love into a long relationship offscreen, according to Hudgens during an interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast (via People) in 2019.

The two were together for five years before breaking up.

While filming The Last Song together, Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus became very close, according to Seventeen (via MTV News) where Cyrus said he was her “best friend.” Their relationship was later confirmed after they walked the red carpet together. Tom Cruise And Nicole Kidman (Days Of Thunder)

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman met at her audition for Days of Thunder, according to an interview she did with Harper’s Bazaar in 2021. The two stars co-starred, fell in love, married in 1990, and then divorced in 2001. 

Zendaya And Tom Holland (Spider-Man Series)

Tom Holland and Zendaya met while filming Spider-Man: Homecoming together, but it wasn’t until closer to the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 that speculation about a romantic relationship between the two seemed to be confirmed. 

Since then, the two have been very public about their relationship, especially when Tom Holland shared a post on Instagram on her birthday, saying that Zendaya was “his MJ.”

There are so many celebrity couples out there - some that have stood the test of time and others that have not. And I’m sure over time, only more and more will start to pop up with even crazier romances. 

Vanessa Hudgens has found her first trilogy since High School Musical in Netflix’s Princess Switch series, which has seen the actress play three roles prone to switching places for various holiday antics. For the past three years the actress has returned to the role, but what’s next? Could a Princess Switch 4 movie be in the works? 

When CinemaBlend recently spoke to Vanessa Hudgens, she was candid about whether she’d return to the three roles for a fourth film. In her words: 

While it may look light and fun on screen, the Princess Switch movies have asked a lot of Vanessa Hudgens. The actress has played up to three different roles for three separate movies, and oftentimes the plot of them having her to play one character attempting to act like another one of their characters in order to fool people with their body-switching situations. 

The year prior to Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, Vanessa Hudgens broke down what it’s like to keep track of these roles on set. In her words to CinemaBlend: 

With that in mind, you certainly can’t blame Vanessa Hudgens for wanting to take a break or say goodbye to the Princess Switch franchise. The trilogy gave each of the doppelgängers a cute holiday love story, so what else is there to tell? As the actress shares, there is something about the third movie that leaves it open-ended about whether it’s over or not. The movies could peacefully end where it has or more storylines could potentially unfold as well. 

The latest Princess Switch movie centered on Fiona, the eccentric cousin of Queen Margaret, who looks just like her, except she’s blonde, and acts completely different than her. During our recent interview, Vanessa Hudgens shared that she actually only decided to make a third movie to further explore the character of Fiona and wanted to tell a story about finding “more empathy” toward people we don’t understand. 

Vanessa Hudgens did previously make another holiday movie with Netflix, 2019’s The Knight Before Christmas. Perhaps if she wants to keep the Christmas cheer going but relax from the intensity of Princess Switch, she could turn to a sequel for that. Also, the actress is currently filming a spinoff anime series for Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. It’s called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and is set to premiere sometime in 2022. And Hudgens also stars in a Netflix Oscar contender, Tick, Tick...Boom!, which is now streaming on Netflix alongside all three Princess Switch movies. 

Since Vanessa Hudgens’ beginnings in High School Musical at 18, the actress and singer feels that she’s lived “many lives” in the world of Hollywood. Having broken free of Disney Channel over a decade ago, she has found herself in many pockets of the industry, between continuing to flex her musical theatre roots in projects such as Rent and Grease Live!, Tick, Tick… Boom!, her role in the Princess Switch movies and so forth. As it turns out, as Hudgens gets older, she would like to get personal in the future by adapting her parents’ experiences to film. 

Vanessa Hudgens has hopes to tell her mother’s immigrant story, as she recently told Glamour Magazine. The actress may be a California native, but her mother, Gina, immigrated to the United States at the age of 25. As she shared:  

Vanessa Hudgens said that she hopes her mom will write a book about her experiences that she can then adapt to film. As the actress pointed out, there are not a lot of movies being made about her particular experience, yet it would be relatable to so many people. Hudgens continued: 

In the past few years, Vanessa Hudgens has started to produce more, nabbing behind-the-scenes credits on her recent Netflix holiday films The Knight Before Christmas and the last two Princess Switch movies. The actress’ pitch is a great idea, because it would offer more representation to the Filipino-American community, which is estimated to be represented by over four million people in the United States. 

Filipino-American movies are a rarity in Hollywood, and it would be an inspired decision on Vanessa Hudgens’ part to help bring one, especially considering she already has an established audience behind her. It’s also a great idea because Vanessa Hudgens’ mother is not a celebrity, she’s the mother of one. Her story of settling into the United States is likely quite relatable, as Hudgens stated, along with being grounded in this everyday American story. 

Hudgens’ father, Gregory Hudgens, sadly died of cancer in 2016 on the evening before Vanessa Hudgens performed Grease Live!. He was reportedly of Irish, French and Native American descent. It would be interesting to see how her parents met and navigated their lives raising Vanessa and her younger sister Stella as they grew up across California and Oregon. Hopefully, she can truly tell this story one day. Another beloved Broadway musical is set to get the live television treatment, as NBC's Annie Live! will be making its debut in a matter of days. The show will bring together a talented cast, which includes some big names. This falls in line with the star-studded ensembles that have been seen in the past. Vanessa Hudgens is among those who have appeared in the live performances, having had roles in Grease Live and Rent Live. With this, she's offered advice for this latest cast, as they prepare for the performance of a lifetime. 

Vanessa Hudgens received much praise for her role as Rizzo following Grease! Live's release on Fox in 2016.  The performance was particularly bittersweet for her, as her dad passed away from cancer the previous day. The former Disney star then appeared as Maureen in Rent Live (which was also on Fox) three years later. She has plenty of experience, so it makes sense that she would share her wisdom with the cast of Annie Live! during an interview with E! News:

At this point, the actress is fairly comfortable with musicals, as her experience with them goes back a ways. It’s hard to forget that years ago, she starred as Gabriella Montez in Disney's High School Musical trilogy. In the years since, she's also starred in stage productions like Gigi and In the Heights. And just recently, she starred alongside Andrew Garfield in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tick, Tick... Boom!. All in all, if anyone would know what it takes to be in a musical, it'd be her.

As mentioned, NBC and Fox have been doing live theater productions over the years with big names and newcomers. Annie Live!, for example, features Harry Connick Jr. as Daddy Warbucks, Taraji P. Henson as Miss Hannigan and Celina Smith as little orphan Annie. The cast already had a chance to perform in front of a live audience during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and it served as a solid preview of what's to come.

Annie Live! marks NBC’s first live musical since 2018's Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concer aired aired on the network for Easter. It will be interesting to see if it lives up to the hype. Of course, many actors have performed the play over the years, but I have no doubts the cast will do a great job. And hopefully, the show will perform well in the ratings and lead to even more live performances in the near future. I mean, let's be honest, it's been way too long since we last got to see a fun, toe-tapping production on the network.

If you’ve been seeing threefold Vanessa Hudgens over on Netflix, you may want to look again, because aside from the actress returning to her holiday franchise Princess Switch 3: Romancing The Star, her role in the critically-acclaimed musical, Tick, Tick… Boom! recently debuted on the streaming service as well. The triple-threat had a chance to return to her theatre roots for the Lin-Manuel Miranda film, and help tell a story near and dear to her heart. 

CinemaBlend spoke with Vanessa Hudgens about her experience on the project, she shared what she’s most proud about being a part of Tick, Tick… Boom! In her words: 

Tick, Tick… Boom! is an adaptation of a semi-autobiographical musical written by Jonathan Larson, who is best known for writing Rent. Prior to starring in the Netflix musical, Vanessa Hudgens has a longstanding history with Larson’s work, previously playing Mimi at a Hollywood Bowl production of Rent after wrapping the High School Musical films in 2010. And in 2019, Hudgens starred in Fox’s live version of the production as Maureen. In Tick, Tick… Boom! she plays a vocalist and colleague of Larson as he workshops one of his musicals. 

As she shared, many people know Rent but Jonathan Larson’s more intimate life and work is not nearly as quoted as “Seasons of Love.” Tick, Tick... Boom! allows a wider audience to become familar with the time between his successful Broadway hit. Sadly, Larson died just shy of seeing Rent become the sensation it was. Through, Tick, Tick… Boom!, Larson discusses the complexities that come with being an artist and also living in the world, where making money and earning a living is often more comfortable. 

Andrew Garfield portrays Jonathan Larson in the movie, and is already receiving early Oscar buzz for the role. Check out Vanessa Hudgens and Garfield sharing the mic for an especially memorable number in the movie called “Therapy”: 

Tick, Tick… Boom! is the directorial debut for Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda. Last year, shortly after wrapping the film, Hudgens told CinemaBlend that filming the project during the pandemic had its downsides, but Miranda was a ball of energy that set a great tone:

Vanessa Hudgens found an unlikely hit when her Netflix holiday film, 2018's The Princess Switch, went absolutely viral. For the rom-com, the actress embodied two lookalike characters: Stacy the up-and-coming baker and Lady Margaret, the Duchess of Montenaro. Following its success, Hudgens stepped into the roles again, plus one in life-of-the-party Fiona, for last year’s The Princess Switch: Switched Again. Now she’s back for three roles once more in the recent Netflix release: The Princess Switch: Romancing the Star. That’s a whole lot of Hudgens! 

While speaking to CinemaBlend, Vanessa Hudgens shared that there was a specific reason why she decided to star in a trilogy that very much hinges on her shoulders to play three distinct roles at once. In her words: 

The Princess Switch: Romancing The Star turns the focus on Fiona, who is dynamically different from the straight-laced qualities of Stacy and Lady Margaret. The blonde-haired cousin of Margaret is all about the drama, and that excited Vanessa Hudgens as an actor. As she shared in our interview, she would not have made a third Princess Switch movie if it wasn’t for Fiona’s spunk and layered character development the threequel has her go through. 

In fact, Vanessa Hudgens also shared that her favorite of the three romances in the Princess Switch movies is the one we see in Romancing The Star with Fiona. As she continued: 

While Stacy and Lady Margaret are more typical romantic comedy leads, it’s not every day that a movie of the genre explores a character like Fiona who is oftentimes ridiculous and over-the-top, perhaps annoying and off the beaten track in the way that Romancing the Star does, by making her the leading lady. The movie has Lady Margaret and Stacy recruiting Fiona out of her probation to help them track down the priceless “Star of Peace,” which has been mysteriously stolen. 

As the movie unfolds, we learn of a longtime connection between Fiona and Remy Hii’s Peter Maxwell, who is a disgraced former Interpol investigator who runs his own private security firm. As the two work together to get back the Star of Peace, a dynamic we’ve never seen in a Princess Switch movie goes on between them. 

It’s certainly understandable as to why Vanessa Hudgens might not have wanted to make more Princess Switch movies considering how much of the project relies on her and her multiple performances, but Romancing The Star gave her an exciting reason to get back into the holiday spirit for the Netflix film. 

There have been some awesome movie musicals that have popped up in the last couple of years, such as the filmed stage production of Hamilton, or even Ryan Murphy’s adaptation of The Prom on Netflix. However, a new musical has stepped into the spotlight, and that would be Tick, Tick...Boom!, the film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s auto-biographical musical, starring Andrew Garfield, and directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, which will most likely become one of the best movies on Netflix. 

But, with such a long cast, full of familiar faces both in Hollywood and from Broadway, one can only wonder where you might have seen these people before. If you’re wondering why those faces look so familiar, here is where the Tick, Tick...Boom! cast has popped up prior to their roles in the Netflix musical. 

Andrew Garfield (Jonathan Larson)

As the star of Tick, Tick...Boom!, Andrew Garfield plays the real-life Jonathan Larson, and he's appeared not only in a variety of movies but plays on Broadway as well. 

First off, with movies, Garfield has been in several big-time films, such as the Academy Award-winning The Social Network, the science fiction romance Never Let Me Go, the war drama Hacksaw Ridge, and the Martin Scorsese film, Silence. Garfield has also stepped into the superhero spotlight, playing the iconic superhero, Spider-Man, during the Amazing Spider-Man franchise from 2012-2014.

Garfield has also performed several times on Broadway. He played Arthur Miller in the 2012 Broadway revival of Death of a Salesman, which earned him a 2012 Tony Award nomination, and starred as Prior Walter in a production of Angels in America, a role he reprised on Broadway in 2018, which won him the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Play.

Alexandra Shipp (Susan)

In Tick, Tick...Boom!, Alexandra Shipp plays Susan, and Shipp has been around in the business of Hollywood for a while, in both television and movies. 

Her biggest role in television was playing Aaliyah Haughton in the television movie, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, a biographical film about the star of the same name. She also played KT Rush in the Nickelodeon show, House of Anubis, and has guest starred on several TV shows, like Ray Donovan, Awkward, Victorious, and more. 

In movies, Shipp is most known for playing Storm in the later X-Men films, X-Men Apocalypse and in Dark Phoenix. Other than that, she’s appeared in several films, such as Deadpool 2, the coming-of-age film Love, Simon, the biographical movie Straight Outta Compton, the Netflix original film All the Bright Places, and more.  

Robin de Jesus (Michael)

Moving on, Robin de Jesus plays Michael in Tick, Tick...Boom!. While de Jesus hasn’t been in as many films and television shows as some of his co-stars, he’s appeared in a multitude of Broadway shows. 

In movies, de Jesus has appeared in the musical drama Camp, the dramas 11:55 and The Boys in the Band, among others. With television, he appeared as Jose Silva in five episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. However, Robin de Jesus has offered his talents much more to the world of musicals. 

He was part of the original Broadway cast of In the Heights until 2010, but also appeared in a variety of musicals and plays such as Rent (created by Jonathan Larson), Aladdin, Wicked, and played Emory in the Broadway revival of The Boys in the Band. With someone as talented as him, on both stage and screen, it’s no surprise he ended up in a movie like Tick, Tick...Boom!. 

Joshua Henry (Roger)

Joshua Henry plays Roger in Tick, Tick...Boom!, and this Netflix musical movie is actually his first major film role. 

Henry has been very active on Broadway for some time. He was part of the ensemble of In the Heights from 2007-2008, played the Tin Man in The Wiz, Haywood Patterson in The Scottsboro Boys, and played Aaron Burr in Hamilton in the Chicago version of the show, as well as in the first U.S. National tour. He also played Billy Bigelow in Carousel and Dr. Pomatter in Waitress in 2021. 

Joshua Henry has had some film and TV experience, like a minor guest appearance on Ryan Murphy’s Nip/Tuck, as well as a small role in the first Sex and the City film. He also played Quincy in Army Wives, and Jerlamarel in the Apple TV+ series, See, but Tick, Tick...Boom! is hopefully going to give Henry the momentum he needs to step into the spotlight of movies. 

MJ Rodriguez (Carolyn)

Playing Carolyn in Tick, Tick...Boom! is MJ Rodriguez, a transgender actress who has been active on both stage and screen for a long time. She started off her career as a stage actress, playing Angel in Rent, and appearing in many other musicals like Runaways and Little Shop of Horrors. 

Later on, she began to show up in both television and film. She appeared in the comedy Adam, and the musical fantasy drama, Saturday Church. 

Rodriguez also had many guest appearances on shows like the Showtime series, Nurse Jackie, The Carrie Diaries, Netflix’s Luke Cage, but it wasn’t until 2018, when she took the role of Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista in the Ryan Murphy series, Pose that she broke out into mainstream and became well-known. Now, after Tick, Tick...Boom!, hopefully more people will see her and know just how much talent she has. 

 Bradley Whitford (Stephen Sondheim) 

Next up, we have Bradley Whitford, playing the real-life Stephen Sondheim in Tick, Tick...Boom! Whitford, who has been a popular actor in both movies and TV for a long time, has surely appeared in something you have seen. 

Whitford has been in several television shows. He played White House Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman in the critically acclaimed The West Wing, for which he won an Emmy. He also won a second Emmy in 2015 for his role as Marcy in the Amazon original series, Transparent. Other than that, Whitford has had roles as Danny Tripp in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Dan Stark on The Good Guys, Timothy Carter on The Mentalist, Roger Peralta in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Commander Joseph Lawrence in the Hulu original series, The Handmaid’s Tale, and so many others. 

Bradley Whitford has also had a prominent film career. Some of his biggest roles were playing Eric Gordon in Billy Madison, Arthur Parsons in The Post, Rick Stanton in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Dean Armitage in the horror movie Get Out. He’s also appeared in other movies, such as Saving Mr. Banks, The Cabin in the Woods, The Last Full Measure, and many more. 

Tariq Trotter (H.A.W.K. Smooth)

Tariq Trotter, otherwise known as Black Thought, is in Tick, Tick...Boom! as H.A.W.K. Smooth, and is primarily known for his music as a rapper and the lead MC of the Philadelphia-based hip hop group, The Roots. They have released a total of eleven albums, and have been the main band on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. 

Besides his musical ability, Trotter has appeared in a variety of movies and TV shows, such as the biographical film Get On Up, The Deuce, and the Netflix original series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. With someone as talented as him, it's no wonder that he's had such a prolific career in the music industry, and was a great addition to the cast of Tick, Tick...Boom!.

Judith Light (Rosa Stevens)

Judith Light, who plays Rosa Stevens in Tick, Tick...Boom!, has been very successful in both the movie and TV industry. 

She started out of her career on Broadway in A Doll’s House, and then began working on television in 1977, as Karen Wolek on the daytime soap opera, One Life to Live. She then starred in and had several roles on television shows, like Angela Bower in Who’s the Boss?, Elizabeth Donnelly in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Claire Meade in Ugly Betty, Judith Brown in Dallas, and Shelly Pfefferman in Transparent. 

Besides her bigger roles, she’s appeared in a variety of TV shows as a guest, like Spin City, Nurse Jackie, and more. Her latest series she’s been a part of is Impeachment: American Crime Story, where she played Susan Carpenter-Mcmillan.

Last up, we take a look at Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Karessa Johnson in Tick, Tick...Boom! For some time, Hudgens has been active in Hollywood, mainly in movies. Her breakout role was playing Gabriella Montez in the legendary Disney Channel-movie franchise, High School Musical. 

After that, she appeared in a variety of movies, including the romantic drama Beastly, the Zack Snyder-directed action movie Sucker Punch, the adventure film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Spring Breakers, the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence movie, Bad Boys for Life, and more. She’s also had quite a Netflix presence, having her own series of Christmas movies called The Princess Switch, in which she plays three - that’s right, three - different character, as well as starring in The Knight Before Christmas.

Hudgens has also had some time on the small screen as well. Besides her big-time role in the first two High School Musical movies, Hudgens played the role of Emily Locke in the NBC series, Powerless, and has appeared on many television shows as a guest. She also had some time on stage as well, including playing Rizzo in Grease: Live and Maureen Johnson in Rent: Live. 

With such a talented cast, it’s no surprise that you’ve probably seen a lot of the actors and actresses of Tick, Tick...Boom! in many other projects before. And I’m sure you’ll only continue to see them as time goes on.  

2021 is a year chock-full of movie musicals, a number of which coming from the brilliant mind of Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Hamilton multihyphenate has stepped behind the camera for the movie adaptation of Tick, Tick... Boom!, which will also mark his directorial debut. And the full trailer features Andrew Garfield belting out songs written by RENT's Jonathan Larson.

Late composer Jonathan Larson's name is synonymous with his work on the musical RENT, especially when he famously passed away ahead of its Broadway opening. But he also wrote an autobiographical song cycle titled Tick, Tick... Boom!, with Andrew Garfield tasked with playing Larson in Lin-Manuel Miranda's movie. And the first trailer (seen above) is pretty damn stunning. 

The above trailer opens by showing the two sides of Tick, Tick... Boom!'s protagonist. While Jonathan Larson is a talented songwriter, he's also got a survival job at a diner. The writing process is a difficult one, and is seemingly informed by Jonathan's relationships, turning 30, and the rise of the AIDS epidemic. 

While stage musical Tick, Tick...Boom! features a cast of just three people, Lin-Manuel Miranda assembled some killer talent to occupy the world of his directorial debut. The trailer features original In the Heights star Robin De Jesus (The Boys in the Band) playing Jonathan's best friend Michael. X-Men's Alexandra Shipp plays Jonathan's girlfriend Susan, while Vanessa Hudgens stars as an actress named Karessa who works with him. The cast list also includes other familiar names like Judith Light and Bradley Whitford, with the latter actor actually playing Stephen Sondheim. 

From these clips it really looks like Lin-Manuel Miranda captured New York City at the end of the millennium. And while it seems like Tick, Tick... Boom! will be rooted in realism, the trailer also features moments of movie magic that elevate the footage. Jonathan sees music staffs appear at the bottom of a pool, there's dancing on walls, and we watch as the walls of Jonathan's diner fade away in front of him. 

While Tick, Tick... Boom! marks a milestone in Lin-Manuel Miranda's career, he's a perfect choice to bring the lesser known Jonathan Larson musical to life on the screen. On top of his work on projects like In the Heights and Hamilton, he's also a massive fan of musical theater himself. And he knows this piece particularly well, as he starred as Jonathan in a 2014 production opposite Leslie Odom Jr. and Karen Olivo.

The generations of RENT fans out there will no doubt enjoy the musical numbers in Tick, Tick... Boom!, with a few briefly featured in this trailer. The emotional final "Louder than Words" is heard as we're introduced to the world Lin-Manuel Miranda is creating for the screen. And the introduction of the opening number "30/90" can be heard at the start of the trailer. Andrew Garfield's version of "30/90" was actually released in its entirety on streaming platforms, so you can hear him belt out the tune alongside Vanessa Hudgens.

Ah, Christmas time on Netflix. Where we get to see a combination of strange royal families, a knight comes back from the 1300s, and Vanessa Hudgens split into three versions of herself. The Princess Switch 3 Is Expected To Come Out Around Christmas 2021

While it did take some time for the sequel to the original The Princess Switch to release, I’m happy to say that we will not have to wait long to continue the crazy story of Vanessa Hudgens and all her mischief with her doppelgangers. The Princess Switch 3 is expected to drop during the holiday season of 2021, according to Entertainment Tonight.

I know, I can’t believe it’s that close either. Looks like we can finally add this movie to our 2021 Netflix movies list, because it won’t be long before we are seeing Margaret, Stacy, and Fiona back on our screens.

All Three Vanessa Hudgens Characters Will Be Back In The Princess Switch 3

I’m pretty sure all of us were surprised in The Princess Switch 2 when Vanessa Hudgens showed up as a third version of herself. I mean, let’s be honest, as ridiculous as the movies can get sometimes, you have to give props to Vanessa Hudgens. I could never imagine playing three different characters in the same story. 

Even so, it seems that that’s not the last time we will be seeing all three versions of those characters. While the first Princess Switch was dedicated solely to the love stories of Queen Margaret and Stacy, the second movie introduced Margaret’s identical cousin, Fiona, who will be back in The Princess Switch 3 as well. Although one has to wonder how she will fit in considering she was arrested at the end of the second film.

The Princess Switch 3 Will Have All Three Identical Characters Working Together To Retrieve A Stolen Relic

While the first and second movies usually focused a bit heavily on the love-lives of their main characters, it seems that the third Princess Switch film will be taking a different turn. In the official synopsis released by Netflix, an important relic will be the main driving point of the third entry into the series.

In The Princess Switch 3, this relic is stolen, and both Queen Margaret and Princess Stacy must receive the help of their cousin, Fiona, who strangely looks like the two of them as well. Together, the three of them team up with a mysterious man (who is also quite handsome) from Fiona’s past to find a way to retrieve it – but of course, this rekindles the sparks of a classic Christmas romance, creating another switch in the process.

From the sound of it, it looks like Fiona might be getting the love treatment in The Princess Switch 3. Or they could be going in a completely new direction. Regardless, the film still sounds like the fun Christmas adventures – with a hint of love on the side – that we all crave.

But There Won’t Be Any New Versions Of Vanessa Hudgens in The Princess Switch 3

When that first The Princess Switch: Switched Again trailer dropped, and we saw a third version of Vanessa Hudgens, I believe all of us were shook. Judging by the trend, most of us would expect possibly a fourth version, but that won't be happening. 

Vanessa Hudgens, in an interview that she did with The Wrap, talked about the possibility, and how it was definitely not in the works for the third The Princess Switch film.

While that is completely understandable, I’m going to miss the chance to hear Vanessa Hudgens attempt a Scottish accent. Maybe in another film some other time.

The Rest Of The Core Cast Is Expected To Return in The Princess Switch 3, Along With Some New Faces

It wouldn’t be The Princess Switch without Vanessa Hudgens, so obviously she will be back. However, according to Deadline, we can expect plenty of familiar faces – plus a few new ones as well.

The regular ensemble cast will return, featuring Sam Palladio as Prince Edward, Nick Sagar as Kevin Richards, Ricky Norwood as Reggie, Suanne Braun as Mrs. Donatelli, and Mark Fleishmann as Frank De Luca, faces that you’ve seen in previous The Princess Switch films. However, according to Deadline’s report, three new faces are set to premiere alongside the familiar ones.

Will Kemp, known for his roles in Reign and Slumber, will be joining the cast, alongside Amanda Donohue, known for parts in Emmerdale and Murder City, and Remy Hii, known for roles like Crazy Rich Asians as well as Spider-Man: Far From Home.

While it’s always fun to see the same characters we’ve all come to love, the addition of new characters is always a welcome change.

The Princess Switch 3 Has Wrapped Filming

Since The Princess Switch 3 is confirmed to premiere at the end of 2021 on Netflix during the holiday season, it’s not surprising to find out that the movie has officially wrapped filming. In an Instagram post uploaded on March 3, 2021, Vanessa Hudgens talked about how the film has wrapped on production, praising the cast and crew.

With this in mind, that 2021 release feels even closer now. I’m eager to add The Princess Switch 3 to the 2021 new movie releases because with every passing day, it seems we’re getting closer to see the adventures of the lookalikes once more.

While RENT remains a beloved part of musical theater history, Tick, Tick... Boom! was also written by late composer Jonathan Larson. The story is autobiographical, revolving around a struggling musical theater writer trying to make it in New York City in 1990. The solo musical was given a fully staged production in 2001, years after the writer died in 1996. And now we'll get a movie version with Lin-Manuel Miranda behind the camera and featuring some killer talent.

This first footage from Tick, Tick... Boom! is limited, but shows the larger than life vision Lin-Manuel Miranda is bringing to the upcoming movie musical. Originally we're introduced to Andrew Garfield's Jonathan Larson and his bohemian friends just trying to keep afloat in New York City at the end of the millennium. But eventually things start getting magical, with Garfield seeing visions of music staffs at the bottom of a pool.

Another particularly striking shot comes when Jonathan Larson is seemingly working a shift at his diner. Andrew Garfield raises his hands, as the entire front wall of the establishment fades away in front of him. While we don't have context for these shots, Lin-Manuel Miranda is clearly going to make Tick, Tick... Boom! into a visual treat. Plus, we haven't even gotten to the music.

Since this is just a teaser and not a full Tick, Tick... Boom! trailer, we don't get to hear much of Jonathan Larson's outstanding music. The generations of fans who love RENT will be treated to more of his signature pop/rock musical theater stylings, while also featuring lyrics that bounce between snark and poetry. The track the group sings along to in the opening scene of the teaser isn't normally in the stage musical, but is a cut titled called "Boho Days." But Lin-Manuel Miranda balances this out by giving us a taste of the show's most beloved song "Louder Than Words" in the final moments of the clip.

As previously mentioned, Lin-Manuel Miranda has assembled a strong cast of actors to bring Tick, Tick... Boom! to life in film for the very first time. Aside from Andrew Garfield, familiar faces include Vanessa Hudgens, X-Men's Alexandra Shipp, Judith Light, and original In the Heights star Robin de Jesús (The Boys in the Band). Bradley Whitford is also expected to appear as famous composer Stephen Sondheim.

Earlier this year, the Disney Channel classic High School Musical passed its 15th year anniversary. The made-for-TV movie surpassed expectations to become one of the most culturally defining franchises for the Disney network at the time. It jumpstarted the careers of still-famous actors Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens and became a memorable trilogy that concluded with a big-screen run for 2008’s High School Musical 3. Could we ever bet on a fourth film from the original cast?

While there are no High School Musical sequels in development with the original cast, fans are certainly interested in the idea. A fan-made trailer of High School Musical 4 recently went viral on TikTok. Take a look:

One TikTok user posted a snippet from a fake teaser trailer for High School Musical 4 that was uploaded on YouTube back in January to go along with the 15th anniversary and it got a lot of Disney fans excited for the idea. The TikTok has been viewed by over one million people since it was posted one day ago and tons of commenters agreed that it “needs” to happen. Here’s the full trailer:

The fan-made teaser uses clips from a number of different projects from the High School Musical cast’s careers to craft an emotional followup to their stories 15 years after the Wildcats first got together at East High School. Troy, Gabriella and the rest of the alumni would each be 31 these days and lead very different lives than they did in the Disney Channel trilogy.

The movie seems to imagine Zac Efron’s Troy and Vanessa Hudgens’ Gabriella reuniting after breaking up in the past. According to the trailer, Gabriella gets invited to her ex boyfriend’s wedding, but Troy can’t stop thinking about his high school sweetheart. It seems like the couple still has feelings for one another and contemplate risking it all for the start of something new.

Of course there are restraints with stitching together clips from Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens’ other projects, but the trailer does a decent job of giving us a taste of what a High School Musical 4 could look like and it definitely sold some fans on it. One commenter said “don’t play with my emotions like this,” whilst another one tagged a friend and stated “our lives would be complete if this was true.”

Disney has revitalized High School Musical, but in the form of a reboot Disney+ series starring Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett. The actors from the original movies have moved on with Vanessa Hudgens starring the Princess Switch movies, Zac Efron just moved down under and is going to star in a Stephen King adaptation and Ashley Tisdale is a new mom. Hey, maybe it'll happen someday.

Wouldn’t it be fun if Princess Switch went the Orphan Black route and unveiled that Hudgens’ characters were the result of some sort of Royal Family experiment to clone the Duchess of Montenaro for some nefarious reason? That’d shake things up big time! But alas, Princess Switch is a light and airy holiday treat to kick back with during the Christmas season, and a sci-fi scenario wouldn’t exactly go along with that tone.

Vanessa Hudgens just wrapped filming the third Princess Switch movie in Scotland this week. The actress posted this on Wednesday to celebrate finishing the project under COVID-19 safety precautions:

To keep her Instagram alive in the dead of winter, the actress also posted a photo of herself in a bathing suit there while it was snowing. When she returned home to the United States, the actress stopped by to see her High School Musical co-star and BFF Ashley Tisdale, who is very pregnant with her first child with husband Christopher French.

Along with Princess Switch, Vanessa Hudgens is set to star in a Netflix adaptation of the musical Tick, Tick… Boom! She made the movie last year in New York with first-time director Lin-Manuel Miranda and the movie’s star Andrew Garfield, who will portray Rent playwright Jonathan Larson in the movie. One of the least exciting things about growing older is falling out of touch with friends and loved ones from not being able to hang out with them as often and as easily as one would like. Naturally, the pandemic has only made such problems even more glaringly apparent, but it didn't stop BFFs and High School Musical franchise co-stars Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens from recently finding a way to reunite for a quick visit after a nine-month span away from one another.

Thankfully, fans weren't forced to merely imagine what it would be like for Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens to hang out again, as there is photographic evidence! Taking to Instagram, the very pregnant Tisdale shared a silly and sweet pic of herself and Hudgeons, masked up and clearly amused.

Ever since they first met each other as co-stars for Disney's High School Musical films, Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens have been as thick as thieves, and they're known for doing all kinds of things together, from getting fans hyped with social media shares like the one above to appearing on non-HSM TV projects together. (Such as the Disney Family Singalong special, even though their bit was specifically tied to High School Musical.) So even though the actresses technically aren't doing anything particularly noteworthy in the image, their happiness over seeing each other again is what truly counts.

While Tisdale doesn't specify exactly why they were apart for a nine-month gap, it can be assumed that their personal lives and careers had something to do with it. On her end, Tisdale spent part of 2020 filming the top-secret first season of The Masked Dancer, which just wrapped up airing those episodes in mid-February. After having unfortunately said goodbye to the short-lived CBS comedy Carol's Second Act in early 2020, she was also showcased for an installment of Disney's biographical series _Becoming. _

Of course, Ashley Tisdale is also pregnant for husband Christopher French, who only just recently watched High School Musical for the first time. She first announced the big news on social media in September 2020, not long after she made the choice to remove her breast implants, so this was (perhaps obviously) the first time that Vanessa Hudgens was able to hug her friend while the former was expecting.

On the flip side, Vanessa Hudgens spent recent months in Scotland filming the third entry in Netflix's The Princess Switch series, which only very recently finished production. She's also working with Netflix for a voice role in the upcoming horror anime Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, which is a spinoff of Zack Snyder's upcoming non-Justice League feature. (She's not in the live-action version.) Hudgeons also filmed tick, tick...Boom!, which is the directorial debut of fellow musical expert Lin Manuel Miranda.

Here's hoping the rest of Ashley Tisdale's pregnancy goes smoothly, and that whenever she's able to safely and confidently get back to work, she can give Vanessa Hudgens a call to see if she wants to team up. Vanessa Hudgens seemed to be venturing far beyond five miles in this nature. Outside of the essential angle, Vanessa Hudgens’ past remarks on COVID-19 came back to haunt her. The clip went viral in 2020 after the actor seemed to downplay the seriousness of the disease. And now they're reappeared.

But not everyone was trying to cancel Vanessa Hudgens. Some came to both the actor and the film’s defense given the year the country has gone through. As you can see,

It was pointed out that Vanessa Hudgens was in Scotland for work not for pleasure. They mentioned the actor wouldn’t be in the country if it was for Princess Switch 3.

Others were angrier with the media over their coverage of Vanessa Hudgens being in Scotland. An article painted the actor being in the country more for a vacation than working on the film. Although given how many character she plays in the franchise, she's obviously got a ton of work to do.

Given the year Scotland has gone through, some found Vanessa Hudgens’ Instagram posts to be a good thing. It was alluded to be the best thing to happen since Scotland went into lockdown. As one twitter user joked,

It’s now been 15 years since the modern classic became part of our lives, so it’s time to reflect on where it all began for Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens.

High School Musical turned its cast into major stars overnight and became the "start of something new," especially for Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, who continue to be highly sought-after actors in their thirties. The casting process for the Disney Channel original movie was apparently a grueling one – director Kenny Ortega said he treated auditions as if he was casting a Broadway musical.

And when it came to Troy and Gabriella, Efron and Hudgens had the “X” factor. According to the recollection of casting director Natalie Hart to Variety, a 17-year-old Vanessa Hudgens got seriously nervous around Zac Efron. In Hart’s words:

It really was in the stars, and the casting directors could see it from the moment they tested for the roles. The Disney Channel stars would, of course, pair up in real life and famously enjoy a romantic relationship for about five years, primarily in their High School Musical years. It’s a funny thing to hear again and again, but chemistry like theirs really did elevate the modern musical. When talking about casting Zac Efron specifically, Hart said this:

The casting directors saw the sparkle in Zac Efron’s eyes that would turn him into a generation’s heartthrob, slapped on posters on bedroom walls all over the world. As the years have passed, Efron has starred in more movie musicals such as Hairspray and The Greatest Showman, but he’s also branched out with his jaw-dropping role as Ted Bundy in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. There's also his recent reality travel show, Down to Earth with Zac Efron. But this is where it all began:

Vanessa Hudgens has also stayed close to her musical roots as of late, starring in Fox’s live production of Rent and soon starring in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut Tick, Tick… Boom!, which she recently finished up in New York during the pandemic.

Who could've predicted the star-making success of Disney Channel's coming-of-age teenage musical romantic comedy, High School Musical? Kenny Ortega's TV movie was once simply a Romeo & Juliet retelling where two separate high schoolers with two different personalities fell in love through their mutual appreciation and talents for theater. It had a quiet release amid the channel's other programming in early 2006. But soon enough, it became the most commercially successful Disney Channel Original Movie ever, generating a whopping 7.7 million viewers and a very devoted fanbase.

It wasn't long before a sequel was made, then one for theaters, and it elevated the careers of all its principal performers, particularly Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and Corbin Bleu. Now, the High School Musical legacy lives on with a spin-off show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which is streaming on Disney+.

As Troy Bolton, East High School's popular varsity basketball team captain who decides to take part in the school musical, Zac Efron found his star-making role in High School Musical. Additionally, Efron filmed another reality TV series, Killing Zac Efron, for Quibi, though its status is unknown since the short-lived company has folded. Vanessa Hudgens (Gabriella Montez)

In the role of Gabriella Montez, a transfer student who forms an attraction towards Troy Bolton after a fateful New Year's party sing-along, Vanessa Hudgens also rose to fame through her leading part in High School Musical. Prior to this performance, Hudgens provided supporting turns in Thirteen and Thunderbirds. This movie's success led to the actress appearing in Sucker Punch, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Beastly, Bandslam, The Princess Switch, Machete Kills, The Knight Before Christmas, Gimme Shelter, Polar, and Spring Breakers. She also starred in Grease Live! and Rent: Live.

Earlier this year, Vanessa Hudgens appeared in Bad Boys For Life. Most recently, she played a trio of roles in Netflix's The Princess Switch: Switched Again. Hudgens also appeared in ABC's The Disney Family Singalong. Also, the actress made controversial comments about COVID-19, for which she later apologized. Currently, she's filming a role in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Netflix adaptation of Tick, Tick ... Boom! Additionally, Hudgens signed on to Netflix's upcoming anime spin-off series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, based on Zack Snyder's forthcoming zombie movie.

Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay Evans)

Playing the part of Sharpay Evans, an energetic theater lover who's always vying for the center of attention, Ashley Tisdale played a splashy supporting character in High School Musical. As one of the main cast members on Disney Channel's The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, Tisdale was once the most famous performers in this TV movie. She also previously did voice work for Kim Possible. Her notable roles after High School Musical include Phineas & Ferb, Scary Movie 5, Aliens in the Attic, Hellcats, Sons of Anarchy, Clipped, Skylanders Academy, and Merry Happy Whatever. Also, in addition to High School Musical's sequels, Tisdale reprised the role as Sharpay in the HSM spin-off movie, Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure.

Recently, Ashley Tisdale starred in the CBS sitcom, Carol's Second Act, which ironically only received one season. The actress also reprised her role as Candance in Disney+'s Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candance Against the Universe. Currently, Tisdale is filming a part in the upcoming drama, Enslaved by Ducks. She also did voice work for the video game, The Dark Pictures: House of Ashes. Outside of acting, Tisdale released her third studio album, Symptoms, last year. It was her first album in a decade. Additionally, Tisdale is currently pregnant with her first child.

Corbin Bleu (Chad Danforth)

In the role of Chad Danforth, Troy's best friend who likes to stick to the status quo, Corbin Bleu was a prominent supporting character in High School Musical. Prior to this performance, Bleu was most well-known for his lead role in Catch That Kid, as well as his supporting performances in Soldier, Mystery Men, and Galaxy Quest. After High School Musical, Bleu starred in Disney Channel's Jump In! and he was seen in To Write Love On Her Arms, Free Style, Nurse 3D, Sugar (2013), The Monkey's Paw, Flight 29 Down, and Dancing with the Stars Season 17.

Most recently, Corbin Bleu guest-starred in Supergirl. He was also recently seen in Ovid and the Art of Love, Witches in the Woods, and Walk. Ride. Rodeo. On the stage, Bleu starred in Broadway's 2019 Kiss Me Kate revival. He's reportedly set to lend his voice to Disney+'s upcoming Cars series. Additionally, Bleu was set to star in a musical production of Catch Me If You Can around this time, though that production was delayed due to COVID-19.

Lucas Grabeel (Ryan Evans)

Playing the part of Ryan Evans, Sharpay's twin brother, Lucas Grabeel gave a standout supporting performance in Disney Channel's High School Musical. Prior to this performance, Grabeel was notably seen in Halloweentown High, Return to Halloweentown, Veronica Mars, and Smallville. After the first film's release, Grabeel could be seen in Alice Upside Down, College Road Trip, The Adventures of Food Boy, Milk, and 2018's Little Women. Additionally, he played a main role in Switched at Birth and he did voice work for Sheriff Callie's Wild West, Elena of Avalor, Spirit Riding Free, Robot Chicken, DreamWorks Dragons, The Cleveland Show, and Family Guy. In addition to appearing in the HSM sequels, Grabeel reprised his role as Ryan Evans in the spin-off movie, Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure.

Recently, Lucas Grabeel voiced the main character in Netflix's animated series, Pinky Malinky. The program was canceled this year after three seasons. Also, last year, the actor appeared as himself in Disney+'s spin-off series, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and earlier this year, he made an appearance in ABC's Disney Family Singalong.

Monique Coleman (Taylor McKessie)

As Taylor McKessie, Gabriella's best friend and Chad's love interest, Monique Coleman had a sizable supporting role in High School Musical. Coleman's other notable credits include The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, Malcolm in the Middle, Boston Public, Gilmore Girls, Guidance, Bones, The Reading Room, Free the Nipple, The Fourth Door, The Cleveland Show, Veronica Mars, and the third season of Dancing with the Stars. She also has her own online talk show, Gimme Mo'.

Most recently, Monique Coleman starred in Phobias and the TV movie, Steppin' Back to Love, earlier this year, as well as the short film, GraceLand. She also made an appearance during ABC's The Disney Family Singalong special. Next, Coleman stars in The F* Happened and Witness Infection.

Bart Johnson (Jack Bolton)

In the role of Jack Bolton, Troy's father and basketball coach who considers theater to be a waste of time, Bart Johnson played a critical adult character in High School Musical. Prior to this role, Johnson was seen in My Family, Sunset Beach, JAG, Hyperion Bay, CSI: Miami, Saved By The Bell: The New Class, and Walker, Texas Ranger. Following High School Musical, the actor made appearances in Daddy Day Camp, The Cell 2, The Client List, Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street, Simon Says, All American, and 2018's Little Women. Additionally, Johnson wrote, directed, and starred in 2008's short film, The Run.

Earlier this year, Bart Johnson starred in Held and the TV movie, Young, Stalked, and Pregnant. He also guest-starred in episodes of Hawaii Five-0 and The Rookie. Next, Johnson will be seen in Initiation. He's also rumored to star in American Paradise.

Alyson Reed (Ms. Darbus)

As Ms. Darbus, East High School's stern and, well, dramatic drama teacher, Alyson Reed played a prominent adult role in Disney Channel's High School Musical. A stage performer since childhood, Reed has performed in a number of Broadway productions, including Dancin', Dance a Little Closer, A Grand Night of Singing, Marilyn: An American Fable, and Cabaret, for which she was Tony-nominated. Her screen credits include A Chorus Line, Skin Deep, Modern Family, Chance, Bones, Mad Men, Numb3rs, Providence, The Agency, Murphy Brown, Norma Jean & Marilyn, Party of Five, Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, Grace and Frankie, Silicon Valley, Desperate Housewives, NYPD Blue, Frasier, Nip/Tuck, JAG, Murder She Wrote, Law & Order, L.A. Olesya Rulin (Kelsi Nielsen)

Playing the part of Kelsi Nielsen, a shy pianist and composer who's constantly bossed around by Sharpay, Olesya Rulin plays a mild-mannered personality in High School Musical. Prior to playing Kelsi, Rulin was seen in Touched by an Angel, Halloweentown High, Everwood, Mobsters and Mormons, and Urban Legends: Bloody Mary. After HSM's success, Rulin played a recurring part in Greek. She also had a main role in Powers, and she can be seen in Drop Dead Diva, CSI: Miami, The Mentalist, Underemployed, NCIS, The Night Shift, and heard in Family Guy. Additionally, Rulin's movie credits include American Pastime, Forever Strong, Flying By, Expecting Mary, Apart, and Family Weekend.

Most recently, Olesya Rulin was seen in episodes of SEAL Team and NCIS: Los Angeles.

Kaycee Stroh (Martha Cox)

As Martha Cox, a peppy brainiac who's friends with Gabriella and Taylor, Kaycee Stroh played a notable supporting character in High School Musical. Outside of this noteworthy role, Stroh was seen in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, Hannah Montana: The Movie, The League, Andi Mack, Shapetown, USA, where she served as an associate producer, and Celebrity Fit Club. Also, the actress made a cameo appearance in Lady Gaga's "Telephone" music video.

Recently, Kaycee Stroh guest-starred in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. She was also seen in this year's special, The Disney Family Singalong.

The High School Musical Trilogy - Disney+

The first High School Musical film starts with Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella (Hudgens) meeting for the first time, and it’s beautiful music from the start. Troy then finds himself torn between his love of basketball and singing. The first two High School Musical films were Disney Channel Original movies but the final one received a theatrical release.

These films are what started Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens’ careers. The movies helped propel them to superstardom and made them household names, especially among millennial and Generation Z Disney fans. High School Musical also allowed Hudgens to show off her singing talents, as well as her then developing acting abilities.

Grease Live - Crackle

Grease: Live is Fox’s live production of Grease. The cast includes Julianne Hough, Aaron Tveit, Vanessa Hudgens, and Keke Palmer. The 2016 television event is the tale of Sandy (Julianne Hough) and Danny (Aaron Tveit), who meet over the summer and have a magical encounter. But, when Sandy gets transferred to Danny’s school, things aren’t as smooth as they were during the break.

Hudgens plays Betty Rizzo. Rizzo is a different role from the actress’ usual good girl persona. The character is sexy, bold, a little jaded, and she seems like a fun character to play. In Grease: Live, Hudgens gives one of her best performances, especially because she had to do it all live. She’s sassy, believable, and gives that Rizzo attitude that Grease fans love.

Bad Boys For Life - Starz

Bad Boys for Life is the third installment in the Bad Boys franchise. This movie follows Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) as he tries to find the people trying to kill him. Meanwhile, Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) just wants to retire and enjoy the next, quiet chapter of his life. Bad Boys For Life does a good job of setting up the next generation of bad boys and bad girls.

Vanessa Hudgens plays one member of the next generation as Kelly, a weapons expert. This is a supporting role for Hudgens, but she gets enough material to show that she’s just as badass as the guys and can hold her own, both in kicking butt and by standing out on screen. Hopefully, in the next Bad Boys film, we get to learn more about Kelly and the other new characters.

Polar - Neflix

Polar is an action movie about a retired assassin who finds himself back in the game. He also finds himself as the target of his former employer and being chased by young assassins. Mads Mikkelsen plays the retired assassin, Duncan Vizla a.k.a. The Black Kaiser. Hudgens plays his neighbor Camille. She becomes a target because of her friendship with Duncan.

Hudgens has been building an impressive portfolio of action movies over the last few years, and this is another cool one that she has on her resume. Camille’s innocent persona pairs well with Duncan’s ruthless killing machine habits.

Second Act - Showtime

Jennifer Lopez stars in Second Act,a film about a woman who is a hard worker but finds her career opportunities limited because of her lack of higher education. She gets a chance of a lifetime when her friend’s son lies on her resume and creates fake social media profiles, also giving her more impressive work credentials.

Vanessa Hudgens plays Zoe Clarke, the daughter of Anderson (Treat Williams), the man that owns the company that Lopez’s character Maya comes to work for. At first, Zoe isn’t the friendliest, but she eventually forms a bond with Maya, and they learn their connection is stronger than either expected. Overall, Second Act is a feel-good movie about second chances, but it’s a more serious role for Hudgens because her character is ambitious and career oriented.

Gimme Shelter - Tubi

Gimme Shelter stars Vanessa Hudgens, James Earl Jones, Rosario Dawson, Brendan Fraser, Stephanie Szostak, and Ann Dowd. The film follows Apple (Hudgens), a young girl who is pregnant. She seeks out her wealthy father (Brendan Fraser) after running away from home.

She eventually leaves her father and moves into a shelter for pregnant girls. She bonds with the other girls and begins to build a family there. This is one of Hudgens’s strongest performances. It’s emotional, raw, and inspiring.

The Knight Before Christmas - Netflix

The Knight Before Christmas is another Netflix and Hudgens Christmas film. This time, Brooke (Hudgens) meets a handsome knight from the 14th century. Josh Whitehouse plays the knight, Sir Cole, who sweeps Brooke off her feet.

The Knight Before Christmas is an enjoyable twist on Christmas romance films. We have seen boy meets girl so many times, but we’ve rarely seen girl meets knight. Whitehouse and Hudgens have great chemistry, so you’re easily invested in their unusual love story.

Spring Breakers - Showtime

Three friends, Candy (Hudgens), Brit (Ashley Benson), and Cotty (Rachel Korine), rob a bank to get money for a spring break trip in Florida. They tell their friend Faith (Selena Gomez), and bring her along for the ride. The law catches up with them, but eccentric drug dealer Alien (James Franco) bails them out.

He soon brings Candy, Brit, and Cotty into his world of crime, but Faith doesn’t want to go down that path. Spring Breakers takes Hudgens far away from the world of Disney in this crime, sex, violence, and insanity filled film. This is a much more adult role for Hudgens that proves she’s not singing to Troy about going her own way anymore.

Frozen Ground - Netflix

Based on the real-life crimes of Alaskan serial killer Robert Hansen, Frozen Ground tells the story of state trooper Jack Halcombe (Nicolas Cage), a man investigating the rape and murder of several Alaskan girls. He seeks help from Cindy (Hudgens), a prostitute that escaped being kidnapped by Hansen (John Cusack).

Frozen Ground is a haunting true-crime thriller. The film is made even more powerful by the excellent performances of the main cast. Hudgens gives another strong performance which shows that she continues to grow and improve as an actress.

Bandslam - Showtime

Before Hudgens left the world of high schoolers singing in musicals, she appeared in Bandslam. The film follows Charlotte (Aly Michalka) and Will (Gaelan Connell) as they form a band. He also forms a bond with Hudgens’ character Sa5m (pronounced Sam). Sa5m and Will's friendship eventually turns into a romance.

Bandslam is a very adorkable teen romance movie. It’s another film that proves why Hudgens was one of the queens of teen comedies in the mid-2000s. She’s likable and has an ease when playing girl-next-door teen characters. Bandslam is a good Hudgens movie to watch if you want something lighthearted and sweet, with some music thrown in there.

Sucker Punch - Netflix

Back in 2011, Zack Snyder co-wrote and directed Sucker Punch. It’s about Babydoll (Emily Browning) being committed to a mental institution. She deals with her new situation by fantasizing and creating fantastic worlds. In these fantasy worlds, she befriends four girls: Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Hudgens), and Amber (Jamie Chung). Carla Gugino, Oscar Isaac, and Jon Hamm also appear in Sucker Punch.

If you like unique action and fantasy / adventure films, then Sucker Punch may be a good fit. It serves as a chance for Hudgens' fans to see her kick butt in highly stylized action sequences.

Netflix sees you, “it’s never too early to get into the Christmas spirit” people. The platform is putting in all the work to keep us fed with some delicious appetizers ahead of the holiday season really setting in next week. Princess Switch: Switched Again is already a hit on the streaming service a week into its release alongside the musical Jingle Jangle and Christmas Chronicles 2 is sure to crack the top ten soon too when it comes out this week. And thus, it’s time to talk about Netflix’s shared holiday universe again.

Did you know about this? The streaming site has been taking note from the MCU with its original holiday content since 2017. A number of movies Netflix has produced for Christmas time have small references to others, making for a conspiracy tree (literally a tree, y’all) that the studio confirmed last year. Except this year’s first movie universe easter egg takes the game to another level. Have you caught this:

In Princess Switch: Switched Again, there is a cameo involving the couple from the Christmas Prince movies. Rose McIver’s Amber and Ben Lamb’s Prince Richard show up to the coronation of Vanessa Hudgens’ Duchess Margaret. The kicker here is in the first Princess Switch movie, Hudgens’ other character Stacy sits down to watch A Christmas Prince. While in the previous movie, it was insinuated that A Christmas Prince was a movie that Hudgens could watch on Netflix just like we can, as it turns out, she was sitting down to watch a biopic of real royals she would later meet? What the heck? It’s clearly got some fans confuddled:

What kind of twisted Truman Show world is Netflix trying to pull here? If you’ve seen A Christmas Prince you know how un-biopic-y the romantic comedy is. I guess both films exist in this fantasy world away from reality and reason. I’d go with that. Fans have all the questions now though:

Now that I think about it, Switched Again probably course corrects the Netflix Holiday Movie Universe. In the beginning with the 2018 movie, let’s be honest here, the easter egg was purely a commercial within the film to remind Christmas movie bingers they’ll also like A Christmas Prince too. For the recent sequel, it’s perhaps making room for them to actually share each other’s universe and perhaps crossover in a larger way?

However, thus far most of the “shared holiday universe” moments have consisted of other holiday movies being on the TV of other movies. For example 2017’s Christmas Inheritance is also on TV in the first Princess Switch and in 2018’s The Holiday Calendar and A Christmas Prince is also on TV in The Holiday Calendar. Last year’s Holiday in the Wild is on the TV in The Knight Before Christmas, but in Knight the kingdom from A Christmas Prince (Aldovia) is mentioned. With that said Vanessa Hudgens is also the star of The Knight Before Christmas and therefore in the shared universe of Princess Switch. So, in conclusion the fourth Vanessa doppelgänger is The Knight Before Christmas’ Brooke? Is that where things are heading next?

Since Netflix is totally that neighbor who has its Christmas lights up a week after Halloween, the streaming service has already released a slew of holiday-themed treats, with much more to come. This past week marked the release of the The Princess Switch: Switched Again, the sequel to the 2018 film. Vanessa Hudgens stars this time as not two, but three lookalike characters, who cross paths during Duchess Margaret’s coronation week. But how many doppelgängers is too far?

Vanessa Hudgens' newest character, in this instance, is Margaret’s cousin -- a fierce blonde with a nefarious plot up her sleeves. A third film appears to be on the horizon, as Hudgens alluded to it the film in a cheeky way during a recent interview with ET. But the actress has also made one thing clear about The Princess Switch 3:

Vanessa Hudgens is drawing the line. Three characters is her limit so, no, there will not be any additional characters moving forward, per The Wrap. It’s fair, considering the actress has had to play off multiple versions of herself for two movies straight. When CinemaBlend spoke to the actress for The Princess Switch, she broke down what it was like to play three character in the same movie:

More doppelgängers or not, it’s exciting to hear that Princess Switch will be a trilogy after all. If you have checked out Switched Again on Netflix, you know where the third movie could be leading. At the end of the movie, Duchess Margaret gets married to Nick Sagar’s Kevin in an airport. This has to be followed by a more formal (and royal) ceremony, right? And will we see Fiona again? There's so much to consider, but I cannot wait to see how these storylines continue.

Aside from The Princess Switch, Hudgenes just wrapped her work on Tick, Tick… Boom, a semi-autobiographical musical about Rent writer Jonathan Larson. The film stars Andrew Garfield as the playwright and is helmed by Lin-Manuel Miranda in his directorial debut. Hudgens told us that the Hamilton creator is an "adorable" filmmaker, who's still doing step routines amidst pandemic restrictions on set. That movie will be coming to Netflix as soon as 2021.
